almost a late hit there too after he went down to a knee somebody at buffalo wild wings through the trigger i'm still mad about that crack block earlier man it's a great block so the eagles cheerleaders go ahead and they do push-ups for every touchdown and every point the indians cheerleaders just clap and count i like archeologist tradition a little bit more trips to the right side gonna be a run right up the middle and good blocking downfield for the eagles and it's gonna be good for nine close to ten great job by the eagles lineman getting down field is that mason in now that quarterback it's not looks like i'm vaguely yeah it looks like the other vaguely out there so mason vaguely the sophomore the backup coming out dalton rainwater is now our running back second one from the yard line high snap gonna be a pass play to the left side gonna be caught great job there by hayden habermill to make the catch with contact coming right away job there by the eagles two positive plays right away and this will be good for mason because looking forward to the next couple years uh if he can get a couple varsity snaps under his belt just to kind of learn what it's about um just assuming maybe he could be in the mix for start in the next two years um so this is this is pretty good for him being under his brother as a as a senior and now he's uh mason's a sophomore gonna be a keep by the quarterback vaguely he's gonna keep his feet moving he's got 10 yards and it's going to be good for another columbia eagles first down as that forward motion gives him 12 and first and 10 for the eagles which vaguely was that i look like dom on that one 34 still dalton rainwater in the backfield receivers are all still the same i believe maddox stefan would be the only new receiver now to consistently see some playing time otherwise we are rotating in and out doubles to the right side sniffer back right running back right high snap once again but it's brought down and it's going to be a slew of indians for a loss of five i think the whole tribe came in to make that tackle i like that one how can they still be the indians with the cleveland indians at the change you got me and the redskins had to change i like football team better than the commanders i think i think they should have kept it at that too 7 10 remaining in this ball game trips to the right side three down lineman three linebackers gonna fake the handoff vagley's gonna keep it he's gonna try to get behind his line of scrimmage or his lineman to get to the line of scrimmage and he does for a gain of four now third and nine this this uh indian defensive front they're getting through real quick the later this game goes on beautiful night here for week one football in a beautiful complex that muscuta has here at moscow to high school that music's a nice little touch there throw a little chaos into the game trips to the left side sniffer back right i really can't tell who the head coach is over here for mosquitoes all of them or moving around you know i feel like different ones go out there and talk to them between each each time out so my cousin he coaches up at sterling they're a 5a school and we were talking he said that he would like to come down here and talk with coach horner and coach germaine and i said okay we'll set that up he goes i'll be bringing probably all 16 of my coaches i'm thinking we've got six yeah they got 14 assistant coaches listed on here plus you'll have your trainer which is then your manager 16 17 18 19.

and just a reminder this game was a 7-6 before a field goal at the end of the first half that field goal made it 10-6 at halftime so all columbus north this half will be what some quick math here uh uh is that 32 consecutive points for the uh it is unanswered unanswered points [Music] we got a new new kicker on the field my poor eyes are not going to make it out but since guests had a cramp there on that pat covered by easton they'll start their own 32-yard line 250 to go fourth quarter see if the score holds here dr roberts or not but if it does you'd have to go back to be the largest differential since 2013 when east beat north 48 to 13. nine nine years ago yeah before that oh gosh i don't know many many years back into the 80s yeah 35 to 3 game east winning in 2008 i believe some second stringers on the field now it appears for both sides zach foster is your new quarterback 510 140 sophomore 36 is the ball carrier james moss also a sophomore 5-7 218.

so you got about 20 people on the side not in pads down there on the sideline plus whatever hurt players you got so compared to our what five or six coaches well we've got our our coaching staff this year they're gonna come to you it's gonna be coach hoyner is your head coach assistant coaches scott germain on the defensive side matt kendall is your jv and special teams coach coach stump jv and defensive coach pat baker is your lineman coach travis amsden is going to be your assistant lineman your volunteer assistant and coach mike coach and zach daley are all your managers so we've got a pretty good crew over there of guys with a lot of experience and knowledge of the game as well can't forget about howie either you know howie and sharky the uh statisticians for us no more buddy this year gonna be a handoff fake handoff i think it was a wrong read there by vaguely look like the motion man nick jannik might have been able to take that and uh that ball is blown up right away and it's gonna be a punt formation now for the eagles with nothing going on that play mcclain sermon was actually in on that play and another injured indian on the play jared mentioned howie over on the sideline howie and sharky are at every game and howie if you have a question on any record that is the man to go to about high school football he and basketball and basketball yeah he started before he was around he just found all the articles from the post or whatever newspaper it was and uh he keeps track of all of them now so if i have any question this week right before i guess it was tuesday night i texted him and i said hey howie uh sorry for the short notice but we got a coach's corner presented by holton meets on uh wednesday night we're gonna do the recording i need some stats and he goes i'll have them to you tonight and at about 11 45 i my phone lights up and he said stats are in your email and everything you need to know everything probably plus 5 000 stats he's got it he's got it broken down to the percentages of the teams that were playing versus their opponents and he could tell me that colombia is going to face moscuta with 1100 students the next biggest matchup would be salem of 646 kids against centralia 878 kids so he's got it all right here he's got dom's all of his stats since he stepped in as a freshman like he's literally got it all he's got it all man so kudos the howie and sharky they've got it and uh i think it was two years ago at breeze central the coolest picture i think i have on my phone is uh well maybe not on my phone but a football is the entire stands everything it's a muddy night nobody's around anymore the game is over and you look across the field and there's one spec and if you zoom in really close it's how he's sitting there doing his stats so uh it's an awesome guy to have on the sideline and he loves what he does makes coach's jobs heck of a lot easier too i know coach warner's even said he goes i don't even know how to add stats on online because i know in in girls basketball like my coach jermaine is the girls basketball coach and he has to call in the stats like on his bus ride home they gotta have a flashlight out and he's gotta have a flashlight when it's bright outside yeah you're right but howie definitely uh makes everybody's job a lot easier around here and it's so nice to have him the injured indian coming off number 82 the junior jacob rumler holding on to his shoulder it looks like once again coming off under his own power so 5 53 remaining in the ball game 49-26 is your score indians are leading as they fourth and nine from the eagles 44 43 yard line here with vaguely back to punt dominic vegeta a very good spiral punt this time going to be caught overran by a couple eagles players and it's going to be brought down looked like number 34 and rain water there number 34 rainwater and number 14 jackson bilteman the two to make the tackle college football starts this week doesn't it this weekend college football starts tomorrow yeah tomorrow the uh the tigers my alma mater thursday night who you got this year who's your favorite who i think is going to win i think ohio state's got all the pieces ohio state by a hundred and now in years past i've said no betting on sports because it was illegal but now we can bet on sports yeah we can actually talk about it now man trips to the right side running back to the right gonna be a fake handoff gonna be a fumble on the play quarterback tried to pull it's gonna be a new quarterback now for the indians as their second string comes in number three the junior jacob fritz tried to pull it from the running back and the running back tried to pull it from him ends up on the carpet four yard loss second and 14 for the indians they're right back to the line of scrimmage same line or same formation this time they're going to keep it with the quarterback but slower of a play developing gain of eight gonna be third and six warm up the bus that's warm up the bus good student section good crowd here tonight for moscow and the eagles they traveled pretty well too they had the majority of their uh stands filled up and as always the fence line filled up trips to the right side it's gonna be another another fumble on the play and this time great job by the eagles getting to the backfield led by number five maddox stefan and number 52 tyler clark both guys that uh coach jermaine talked about in the coaches corner as guys that are gonna have to step up this year is this their first pun or second punt i think it's their first one i think it is two because i think they went forward on a fourth down a couple drives ago and didn't get it because i think they were three for three or four for four for on fourth down at that point but i think they only have nine guys on the field right now two four six eight nine nine guys were on the field and they called it timeout so their second time out of the half so now we start talking at about the end of this one here in the start of next week fear the eagles you had some some good moments here and i think tonight on i mean we'll talk a little bit more after the game but you got to keep your head up here tonight uh you had some good moments but you had some bad moments as well yeah it started off i mean just how it's looking right now we got the ball first and had two pretty good runs to bring up what it was like a third and four right off the bat and vaguely try it's taking a shot across the middle off wide receivers hands and first 30 seconds of the game were already down a touchdown so and when you're coming coming to play here you're basically walking in here down seven nothing if not 14 nothing with the environment that they bring and um just the fans being so loud and um coaches having to yell across the whole field call plays in so i think having this week uh we'll be we'll be better next week and i think against the waterloo team uh knowing how big that rivalry always is always um we'll have to be ready for that and uh first home game of the year so kids will be excited about that and you get those those jitters and that excitement of the first game of the year too so i mean just like they had the first game tonight at home we've got our first game so that'll be a good uh get back into our home turf and see what we can do as the muscular indians come back onto the field 340 remaining eagles down 49-26 the first punt is going to go from the 20 and gonna be fumbled and looks like gonna be a fight for the ball here there's two eagles and one indian ball just hopped off of our returners chest and scooter ball and recovered by the indians one of those things that when things start going south they go south in a hurry [Music] [Applause] so now the indians are going to start again on this drive from their own 49-yard line leading 49-26 331 remaining we're gonna have another new quarterback into the game now number 23 freshman kale miller doubles are the right side gonna be a handoff up the middle gonna be met at the line of scrimmage by number five once again maddox stefan and then it's a slew of eagles to make the tackle we've done pretty well i think at tackling the night we've had good hats on the football i guess i should say yeah whenever they have a couple athletes that are just faster and stronger than you uh they're gonna get to that spot a little quicker than you but um yeah tonight we've made some good tackles uh i think we got to work on getting to spots a little quicker and linebackers kind of kind of reading which guards and tackles are pulling um but i think overall on the defensive side we just we really got to focus in on stopping big plays um because we would get to that third and fourth down that we would always want and they would end up succeeding on that gonna be a run up the middle once again good job by the eagles linebackers this time stepping up making the tackle i'm gonna call it number 20 braxton bosh is in for the tackle good for a two yard gain now it's going to be third and seven third and six from the eagles 47 yard line with 210 remaining in the ball game three down linemen still for the eagles five linebackers three defensive backs low snap that's fumbled now they're gonna have to try to make something out of nothing good job by the eagles defense getting in the backfield and it looks like rainwater once again to make the tackle in the backfield loss of two on the play looks like mosquito better work on some of their snaps on the second string quarterback and third string every snap has been down at their ankles so i want to get a look at that practice this week next week it was freshman there at quarterback under 120 now remaining in the ball game for week one fans are starting to make their way to the exits good snap good punt that will go [Music] and give the eagles a bounce at first before being down at the 19-yard line with 101 remaining in this week one matchup with the eagles barring a huge miracle will fall to on1 eagles knew that they were in trouble here tonight they came in we knew that 22 returners coming for moscuta um a big offensive line a solid defensive line for moscow and whenever it boiled down to it they had some pretty good athletes on the side of the field too yeah having that number one and number five on your team got to be pretty nice and coming in this year they both had pretty good years last year if i remember i know middleton like i said earlier we had a really rough time um trying to stop him but uh yeah tonight it looked like they were ready to go and they're just a little bit better than we were tonight and i mean we played we played pretty well for i'd say i'd say two quarters out of the whole game we played really really well um some stuff that we need to fix but overall i think i think we'll be all right as the eagles take a knee on the first play they'll have to do it one more time as there is now 40 seconds remaining so this will be the last play of the game here we will run to a break and then we will be back with the coaches show or the i'm sorry the post game show as now the student sections are all waving their phones back at each other it's about 15 muscuda fans and colombia's won [Applause] so that's going to do it the eagles are going to take the final knee of the game and that's going to do it for week one as the muscuti indians are gonna leave victorious 49-26 over the eagles we're gonna run to a break and we will be back with the post-game show after this welcome back ladies and gentlemen to the post game show here live from the scooter the eagles are going to lose the week one matchup 26 to 49 and jared i'm going to still give my player the game to zach wetzel like we said he was in the right place at the right time and uh he made the plays when he needed to yeah it was definitely uh between uh him and don vagely uh we'll probably be saying don begley's name a lot this season so um but zach wetzel tonight he really impressed me with his route running uh his vision and the way he was just being like you said earlier being the right right spot at the right time um so zack wetzel yeah that's our player of the game good job zack wetzel and keep it up when hopefully you get some good things out of you this year and like we said in the recap you know boil down to it the better team i think won tonight you can't really hang your head too much yeah did we play great no but boiled down to it number one and number five are two great athletes quarterback was able to get it to him and uh moscuto was able to come out here victorious on the week one matchup so uh get back into it work this week and you know your season's not done after one game you still got eight weeks and uh conference you got one more non-conference game and then with waterloo and big rivalry you never know what's gonna happen then you know i think on the defensive side of the ball tonight the biggest thing you can take away um you stop the run pretty well on first and second down and you would get into some good third down stops that you could maybe get but we would have third and fourth third and five all night and they were able to get it to those athletes and pick up first downs and travel down the field and score touchdowns um i think we only made maybe two stops all night maybe got one fourth down stop and then made him punt one time all night so i know uh coach germain's not gonna be too happy about that but um it's week one you got eight weeks left to to fix that and try to make a push for the playoffs i agree so now we're gonna go into let's talk week two here uh you got waterloo like i said route to your rivalry it's gonna be military appreciation night we're gonna be honoring a family with songs for soldiers out on the field i believe that's gonna be either post game or pregame rather or between the first and second quarter we're going to have the mascot race the eagle versus the bulldog we're going to have rally tiles so next week is going to be fun home opener going to be a fun rivalry and it's going to be a night that we can raise some good money for songs for soldiers and everything that they do so with all of that being said before that happens we will be having our houlton meets coach's corner um we'll be talking coach germain coach horner we're going to try to get all five coaches back again um we'll have some jv games to talk about as well so make sure you look for the hulton meets coaches corner that'll be thursday i think it goes at 6 30.

yeah looking back through the scores here brett given that you threw that out as a little bit of a challenge as to how this differential compares but this may be about the largest differential for north in the series history they did win 38 to nothing in game one in 1972 so that was a 38 point differential right now it's at 33 points they had a 39-7 win columbus north in 1974 that would have been a 32-point differential trips formation now for east and again official's timeout and that's going to be yeah an attempted quarterback keep for zach foster and he's going to be swallowed up by the dogs yeah the punt team's gonna come back on the field let's keep scouring scores here dr bozeman it does look like uh north 1988 going back to your 80's to nothing that was the biggest difference differential um this would be the biggest difference differential for north since that time 1988.

east is going to punt this ball away and we're gonna have a penalty here because we weren't set oh time out for north time out for north north's going to put their number one punt return team on there just for a security measure i would assume here yeah looks like that is the case 40 seconds to go we're starting to see the bleachers empty a bit dr bozeman yeah they certainly are now but they weren't even a few minutes ago no people held on for a for a long time just trying to make sure and see what was going to occur but all columbus north this half maintain field position positive yardage basically every play turn field position into points there's gonna be a flag running into the punter here i don't know if it came out yes it did didn't it yeah okay if it's roughing it's a first down if it's running into it's a five yard penalty and they'll kick it again so yeah running into the kicker yep yeah the lesser of the two is going to decline that north will come out here and take a knee likely with their twos it does look like their subs are gonna yeah might be able to snap it once take a knee and that will take care of it it's a good chance for younger kids to be able to get on the field and yeah big game nice to see some additional kids on the field so 33 almost 34 seconds to go they're not going to take a name he's going to try to go down in bounds though and they're going to i'm sure he did keep the clock yeah he did he was able to do that clock is still running and that should do it whether he was out of bounds or not the officials are going to say they're going to say he was yeah and that's going to do it say okay so the final here is going to be 39 to 6.

just for red light is on thank you um thank you for joining us for this meeting uh on august 29th 2022. uh before we begin guadalupe may we have the translation information for our spanish speaking audience absolutely [Music] thank you so much um i'd like to call this meeting to order um monica may you do roll call please mr amador here ms lovato here ms zubia here thank you next we have approval of the agenda can i amend it of course i'd like to move to amend the agenda and switch 1.5 with 1.4 so that 1.5 is first before 1.4 thank you may i have a second oh second thank you uh monaco roll call please mr amador aye mrs aye ms lovato aye ms lubia aye and i believe we need to have a motion to approve the amended agenda is that correct i move to approve the amended agenda oh second thank you monica roll call again sorry mr amador aye mr estrada aye ms lubaro aye ms rubio thank you so next we will take 1.5 first which is the election of board president pursuant to board policy bda with miss lewis's resignation the office of president of the board of education is also vacant for the remainder of her two-year term board policy bda requires the board to fill the vacant office nominations for president xiaomi shall be made from the floor and voting shall be by roll call unless you all prefer secret ballot is there a nomination for a member to serve as president of the board i have a nomination i nominate vice president lovato to continue in the role of president thank you is there a second a second thank you sir thank you all i humbly accept um i was going to say do you accept that i yeah not his plan but i i'm happy too monica roll call please mr amateur aye mrs bella thank you all i look forward to continue working with you um next we have the reopening of the application process to fill board vacancy of education with the resignation of president ramona lewis last month we previously declared a vacancy to date only one application has been received compared to previous vacancies over the last several years when numerous were received to that end i would like to entertain a motion to extend the application process or timeline so just to clarify um this is the uh uh this is the term the term will be ending um next year november right correct so november in a year to finish off ms lewis's term yes so and we have so many days to fill that correct yes we have a 60-day deadline which i believe is september 9th so we would need to extend the application deadline to include that date which i believe is a friday in hopes that we get more to apply um otherwise just to be um transparent here if we don't have um additional applicants um then we may consider appointing someone um but we still will have the community correct okay yes yes and we still it's my understanding we still have one applicant we just want to continue the process extend it a little longer so that in hopes we have more people yeah so we can have an interactive community forum and um so and i just wanted to make clear that um the reason i had asked to amend our agenda earlier was because i feel more confident having our board president in position before actually doing the other process so it just makes sense to have it that way first which is a step i think that we didn't take previously as well so um okay well then i motioned that madam president before you move forward just to be clear that um former president lewis's uh resignation came in on july the 17th effect of that date and so it's 60 days from then that you have to fulfill the or fill the uh vacancy which would then put us at september the 15th september 15th is that calendar days or work day it's it's calendar days and uh september the 15th would be a thursday september 15th okay do you recommend that we go that long or should we i think we allowed ourselves a little leeway last time if we do it like the friday before so the resolution um that you passed creating the vacancy or the process for the vacancy gave you the discretion to adjust the timelines however you need to okay and so i i would recommend that you just adjust the timelines uh taking into account that you have up until september 15th okay okay and we'll just announce the dates separately okay all right okay awesome i have a motion on the floor do i have a second oh second thank you uh monaco roll call please mr amador aye mr estrada aye ms lovato aye ms lubia aye awesome um very quickly before we adjourn i'd like to take a moment of privilege um we recently had a passing of mr travis he served for a number of years at lester arnold um i know at our last uh graduation ceremony uh several students acknowledged him publicly during the ceremony and um i would just like to take a moment and and wish our best to the family for this extraordinary loss yes thank you all um i would like to take a quick break as we welcome our guests coming in and you're welcome to gather food i believe we'll have a banner and and just turn the volume down for the next few minutes so we have a chance to all grab food and transition down there and then we'll begin our meeting with the city you thank you oh dude we need to i don't think we need to adjourn yeah we're continuing we're just taking a quick break so i got a whole piece thank you the red light is on thank you all for joining us i know you have to get out of here quite soon so um really quickly do we mind going around and doing some introductions and then we'll start with the video and some updates and we'll get you out of here on time um yeah i'm good evening sean ford uh city council at large good evening as well jason rogers deputy city manager for commerce city kathy blakeman i am the acting city manager at commerce city i'm richard myers i'm director of public safety for the next six months for commerce city i'm james amador i'm on the board uh janet estrada i am the board treasurer last but not least hi christy douglas commerce city council at large pleasure to be here thank you great thank you all for joining us on such a short notice uh dr lauria would you like to start with a video yes um thank you everyone for being here again we do have a short video just highlighting a few of the things that we're doing here at our district with our students so we brought up two of our rapids two defenders today omar gomez and blake malone they're uh with us at al sub elementary just reading to the kids and really just participating in our outreach community raise your hand if you have a favorite book okay we'll just start right here what's your favorite book how many you guys here like to read okay a lot of hands okay so your spirit you'll stay true never sorry to be you but change your strides and fail soon a couple weeks ago we received an email from the colorado office asking to partner with them and being with our children at school when people take the time out of their day to come and read with them and be able to experience new members of our community engaging with their education excites them a lot of our players are homegrown players which means they grew up in and around the denver metro area or surrounding cities in colorado this is definitely an experience that i wish i had as a kid um i think that it's it's a role model opportunity and i think it's something that the kids can look forward to can lean on and grow with and hopefully gives them something to believe in as they believe in themselves so i think that if you have dreams and goals that is always important to work as hard as you can and follow your heart to try to get your goals and dreams accomplished you know i think it's important to us as a friend to really establish ourselves as a part of the community and i hope that you know overall the kids just have fun our guys love interacting um with the community and and just seeing their faces and being able to say that they went home and met somebody that wears a jersey is a pretty great experience for a child your dreams are yours now go and get them i love their faces when they're like oh that kept me smiling the entire um video but um just some of the things that we're doing at our schools i think this video just exemplifies how we're really in our communication department and how we are really trying our best to showcase the great things that are happening around in our buildings um this board is extremely focused and um very cohesive and have the board has given me the direction to really reimage how we educate students and how we really tell a different story our story has been told by many you know for many years by many people who may not even know what's going on here so our charge is to ensure that we actually share the story because great things are happening in our schools and that is not you know told or at least not not you know as often as we need to so we are creating we have a phenomenal uh communications department that is actually led right now by dr mccanna and his team and uh just putting out everything that is happening the great thing so that it was just a small video we are very excited this is week three or maybe for week three for students and um we're working right now on leveling classrooms week four right i mean well you know when you're having fun you don't even know when time is passing so um because otherwise like is it month 10 yet but uh you know we're having a lot of fun actually um we are now leveling classrooms uh we do have uh like every other state district in the state except 11 districts is what the finance project shared a week ago at the school finance we are experiencing some teacher shortages that was exacerbated by the state board to junk our accreditation and to throw us into the process to dissolve the district uh so that actually made some teachers scared we had several teachers dozens a couple dozen teachers that actually um you know uh turning their resignation the week off saying that they you know some of them actually shared you know what you know what if mid-year we do not have a job which it doesn't work like that we know it's going to be a process a long process involving surrounding districts they have already made a very strong stand that they will not support that so we know it's not going anywhere but the public and in the community does not understand that so it's our job to make sure that we are sharing the great things that are happening so we're leveling classrooms we're making a lot of progress there we're also working with a an organization a non-profit organization called connect ed and they are working with us to for me to be able to fulfill the charge that i was given by the board to redesign how we are educating our students starting with our high school so you will probably recall that about a decade ago when the district passed a bond to build the high school the promise that was given to the community in the wanting of the community at the time and it's still today by the way was to have different academies in the high school i have been working in education for this is my 34th year i'm going to stop counting i'm going to say over 30 moving on but in all my years most of them in large urban school districts i know that when there are several high schools and they have different themes the students can choose where to go based on their interests when we are in small school districts that i have also worked in small districts urban settings most of them when we have one or two high schools is we organically cannot offer you know as many options to students so we need to be very strategic in creating those opportunities for students so we brought in connect ed they are a non-profit organization that have that has worked with many districts in high schools hundreds of high schools helping them go through the process involving the community the businesses in identifying what may be themes for these academies or for these small schools within one school so that students can come in saying i am interested in technology so they can gear you know or they can continue their studies in that area uh in some cases it is it is a belief that we are putting kids you know in a little box you know you you selected uh i don't know for example technology or you selected health professions and now you're stuck there and it is the contrary because the goal for these themes is for students to prepare we actually work with them since middle school to help them start understanding their learning styles and uh what they're interested in and when they come in and start working or going to academies they actually learn all the standards around a focus of interest or around a theme of interest and they learn actually that to be in the in the health profession for example is not only i'm gonna be a nurse or i'm gonna be a doctor no there are hundreds of opportunities within that field so actually opens their their um perspective of what are options for them as they grow so we started the work already we have had two meetings with well actually several meetings but the last two were a week ago with uh teachers and administrators and we are there were some board members actually present and we are looking and going back to what the community and the students have said we surveyed all students and they that the themes are coming to emerge there's still more work to do this next couple months we're going to be working on solidifying the themes and once we have those we're going to be also engaging with the community with our partners like you know individuals like you we're going to be reaching out to businesses community partners to start also narrowing down the profile of our students meaning if we have a graduate from adams 14 what profile what are those qualities in students what do you as employers as future employers as communities say you know if i can have a a young student coming out with these things you know i can take them from there because we can continue that that preparation regardless if it's a student choosing to go to college to to the university you know directly to employment we need to know that because we need to backwards map if if this is by graduation so what is a ninth grader supposed to be doing what does a sixth grader need to be doing in third grade what is a kindergarten student when we say kindergarten is on a great level what does that mean so we need to have clarity on that and for that we need our communities to be involved in our parents it's going to be an organic process especially now with technology when things change every six months you know a phone is considered old after a year and you know it's incredible to me but uh it's probably going to be old in you know in five years it's going to be old in in a month maybe so it's going to be organic it's going to be evolving with time but that's why we need to continue involving the community and the employers so that's with the high school we are expecting in foreseen between four and five academies within the high school including lester arnold so lester arnold will be if we have five there will be the fifth one each of the academies will have approximately 400 students and the goal is for students to be all four years with a group a smaller group uh when we are working in student or in communities that are impacted by poverty and and uh students may come with certain risks just because of language or etc considered to be a risk believe it or not it it really helps them when they are in in a smaller group because it creates that sense of belonging so we have less students falling through the cracks with the elementary also a quick update central elementary we propose to the state and innovation plan bringing a layer of extra support to the community following a model that is called community schools model and this is basically an extra layer of support that the community will receive the students the parents will receive based on what they say is their need so we started that process we actually have an area that is dedicated for community meetings and and we hired a coordinator that will be focused only in developing this layer of support for communities we're working with colorado educators association and the national educators association in in developing that and we are also working with tntp tntp is a national organization non-profit organization that is supporting us with developing strong structures for improvement because we know we need to improve in many areas and they will be supporting us with building those structures that will be sustained after after i leave and after my team leaves although my husband says i will never retire i say i will retire one day so when i retire they're gonna be systems that were actually born and supported at the community bottom up right from the parents not top down because that's when the leader leaves everything falls apart but if it's the other way if it's bottom up and we listen and involve our community members our partners you know individuals like you actually it doesn't matter who is at the top because it has a strong community foundation it will be sustained so that's that's the goal um in a very quick update because i know your time is limited but i don't know if you have any questions um or anything that any of my board members or madam president you would like to add really quickly before we go around for questions we are returning to pre-covered celebrations and so i would be remiss without starting that we're having our uh homecoming parade and festivities we're going to have a car show and the game and it's just nice to return to old traditions but our athletic director asked that i extend the invitation to you all there will be something more formal coming along the way but we would love for you to be in the parade and attend the events nope nope any questions yeah i just had a few questions are the resource officers going to eventually be back in the schools i can answer that yes thank you for the question madam president members of the board and miss helen thomas the resource officers we do have a contract with the police department commerce city police department the conversations that we've had with them is that they do not have enough staff to have all the resource officers that we that we assigned or we contracted or agreed to have so um we yes they can be back but i know we're working with the police department because it's a staffing issue last year we were expected to have five officers and we were able to get only two throughout the entire year so we're going to start to think differently on how to structure our security office because at the end of the day we want to make sure that we have that extra support at the schools but if we know that the police department is also having a staffing issue just like everywhere and exacerbated after kovit as we probably have experienced we need to structure differently so that we support the schools and also um you know working with the police department on you know how many officers we can get okay thank you because um i was just contacted by a lot of constituents and they were saying that's a main concern with the recent school shootings if you know the resource officers will be returning so yeah we're open for that we're actually having a meeting with them on wednesday and after that when we get a little bit more information we're going to be communicating an update to our community okay great thank you and then another question i'm just curious um how many applications did you receive for that open board seat and is that is the board planning to appoint that person um we just recently met about that right before um we started this meeting and we extended the application timeline in hopes that we get some additional applications mostly because we would like to engage our community and and in the past we've typically had many more applications so i believe we extended it through september 9th um but we'll we'll publish information um all right thanks and then i'm just curious from the time the other board member left does the board still have 30 days to point another one is that still how it works 60 60 oh yeah yeah i think yeah then i'm halfway there okay great okay thanks and then just another little update um i don't know if the board and everyone's aware but we just approved a 90 90 unit um affordable housing area complex to go up at 7001 south colorado boulevard and those are going to be two to three bedrooms like i said low affordable housing and the council and all hasn't discussed this but i was just curious what if the district put the adam city property up for sale today and just say the city or someone else bought it for 50 million i'm just you know making a scenario the best grant for approval doesn't come back until february or march but whoever purchased that land would give the money for the best grant because this is something i was just curious um if the board members have thought about because with those houses coming in i know back in there was a best grant for the alsup and adams city middle school and sheila burke was on that committee planning them for to get another adam city middle school and also but only all set pass i was just curious with that with those more homes coming in is there a thought or possibility how we can get a best grant for the new adam city middle school because actually we've met i met with finance today we were actually having a discussion about um not necessarily the property for sale but actually um another best grant and yes my recommendation as a superintendent is to con to apply for another best grant we will however look at the needs of the schools because i i know there's a lot of interest in having a particular school in this case you mentioned adam city middle school but what we would look at is based on the needs of all the district of all the buildings that we have we're going to go for the one that makes the most sense in 2021 there was a an analysis of the needs of the schools that was before i came but as it was not shared at that time but in january or march earlier this year we share that my team share that master facility master plan with them and definitely we'll need many many best grants to get where we need to be and we have more needs that funds at this time to fix them some of the schools and in construction and i'm not an expert so but this is what i understand as a non-construction expert once you need more than 60 percent of the value of the building just to repair it we really need to consider and just tearing it down and build a new one adam city middle school is not in that position it's actually we have other schools a little bit worse so we will need to engage with our board engage with the direction and provide recommendations of what we would recommend for either tear down and up or or remodel based on the facility plan that we have okay thank you because i was just hoping to like i said maybe a new adam city middle school it would be nice if it could even possibly build up be built on the old high school site and you know because this is something i hope the board members think about and look because i think it would look favorable to the state board of education as well and you know i'm really rooting for the students of adams 14 to 16 and that's all i have thank you thank you councilwoman um i would like to add i know i follow the city council meetings pretty closely and i would love to involve the district and the discussions of the redevelopment of that area because i know with that housing it's going to bring changes we've already talked about the possible changes that are coming with the dog track development so we would love to join you in those discussions i'll just i'll just bring a couple of uh short updates for some of the things that that we've been working on um and it pertains to the mile high greyhound park um looks like all the infrastructure work is done now for that phase one and that's completed including the landscaping so we're you know moving on there and there's construction of the wood spring suites that's going to to begin later this year and that's 122 room suites basically that will be open for business in 2023 so that's well well on its way as well i'm really excited to hear some of the things that you guys are working on from the standpoint of your students and getting them into these academies he leaned over and made a comment about you know what about criminal justice getting these you know these students in early which i know we already have a good partnership with the students but to be able to to build upon that as well so many synergies you know us being not just an employer but also as we bring in new businesses looking at what some of those skill sets may be on that little segway there some of the business activities rather than going through this entire list we do have several um either new businesses or businesses that are expanding which equates to over like 150 new jobs just just for this short few that i'm going to read out to you which is which is pretty exciting one is the kamida park at the mile high flea market that's a company that's coming in and they plan to have 55 food trucks and operators out there which is pretty exciting and that's anticipated to open by the summer i know right food of 2023 so dollar tree is is coming in we have things like cabinetry companies that will be coming in so some of those those trades as well um what else do i want to mention here maybe a thresher foundation repair they're bringing in 63 new jobs by themselves with pretty high average wages for the for many of those positions so that's kind of an exciting thing for our young students to be watching and seeing what some of their futures might entail so that they can figure out what it is that they want to do with their you know their next level of their careers as well never forget about our police department we'd love to you know to see some of them apply there as well as they as they go through their education um let's see oh i think i'll just jump down to with the american rescue plan so the city's moving forward with a homeless navigation center and so we are in partnership with adams county on that it's not going to be a homeless day shelter it's more of a a transitional navigation sort of a center it's going to provide critical intervention support services some transitional housing mental health services addiction counseling and this partnership is also going to we're looking at doing a community of pallet shelters is in consideration at this time that will serve as that that high barrier to entry transitional housing getting people to move on and think about what it takes to be able to move from where they are to where it is that they would like to be so it's providing a safe secure temporary housing and then um staff will be finalizing some possible site options that we are preparing to bring to council for further guidance in q3 of 2022 and so with that i think that's just a few of the things that that we've got that we're working on he has a couple of things he'd like to mention as it pertains to a question that you had asked earlier good evening to update you on the school resource officer program it's true that we're challenged we're down out of something like 129 authorized sworn we're down 21 officers that's a hit and obviously it's a priority that we put people in patrol cars covering neighborhoods however in my past agencies i've had tremendous success with sro programs i believe one officer in every school saves five officers on the street in terms of proactivity intelligence gathering quick intervention you know if you can catch i my wife's a retired middle school and elementary teacher and we've long discussed you can ask any kindergarten teacher six months into the school year who are the three or four kids i'll be locking up when they're teenagers why wait let's get involved and find out what's going on in that kid's life and how can we intervene in a way catch them upstream and throw them back and then when they're the big fish downstream they're they're going the right course so that's what sro programs can do among many other things so we are prepared with some pain and some pushback from patrol to implement three sro officers starting september 12th we think we can move people around enough and how we have that planned is one full time for a high school up in 27j one full time at adams city high school and the third one will serve both districts they will go at is it kearney or kearney middle school up north and then down here at adam city middle school and with the promise that as soon as we get a couple academy graduations and we begin i've had four entry-level final interviews with candidates in the last week so we are aggressively pursuing new officers the issue with adams 14 is that the contract actually expired two years ago and you've had a lot of turnover as you've alluded to and our folks don't know who to call anymore and they're having a hard time so maybe when the meeting occurs wednesday we'll try and have the right people there you can have the right people there and then we may have to call on council to act on a quicker than normal ordinance process or approval of the contract because to me we're four weeks behind right school started you should have an officer in the schools so um that's the status of the sro program i also wanted to a little bit address concerns about school shootings because you know uvalde is fresh on all of our minds i will tell you overwhelmingly that law enforcement across the u.s were thoroughly disgusted by the incompetence shown by the agencies involved certainly here in colorado home of columbine were which changed everything on active shooter situations i'd put our officers up against any other state in the nation on their ability to quickly mobilize go to the scene of an active shooter and go to the source we train as an agency adams county sheriff has trained uh all the adjoining cities have trained and we all have similar response protocols and so i still want proactively an officer in the school but historically it's not always the sro that intervenes and is able to stop the active shooter i know about active shooters in my first year as chief in colorado springs we had the new life active shooter that first killed some kids up here i think in arvada and then came down to the springs so i've been there and you want to be prepared for that and you want the men and women on your agency prepared i feel we are prepared but we're not sitting on our laurels we constantly are looking at the training so that's a little update for sros and in the god forbidden event of an active shooter you can count that we'll be here we're not going to stand around if we're here trust me so i um i just had a comment to um one of your your comments of having a police officer in every school and starting when they're early that's an assumption being made that the kids are genuinely bad that there's like you said three out of the bunch to me once again that's a deficit mindset and for our kids who are initially already struggling with racism and structural racism that comes from not just law enforcement but other inequalities it just does not make sense to me to say that every school could benefit from having an officer on site to make sure that you know you get them early that's that to me just does not sit well with with my community because once again i've known a lot of these kids since they were born and i just don't think that um you know you could tell that early that they're going to be people that you're going to lock up later so i just wanted to put that out there because to me it's um it's an unfair statement of the community that i'm trying very desperately to bring up uh from that deficit mindset to saying these are let's look at it as an asset base and let's look at resource officers as an asset and how they can help benefit our kids as opposed to how they're going to help penalize them and as a parent i can tell you how my kids were penalized by the police officers when there was nothing being done i mean taking a shortcut across the quebec apartments did not mean a ticket for my kid because he's brown and my other kid because he wrote a word on the wall did not mean that he had a small word on bathroom wall that he needed to get a ticket that totally made him think that he was such a bad person that he was suicidal after three years i will not allow any other child to go through that ever again because my kids went through it and i don't think i think that there's a a plus and a minus and we have to find out what is the balance here and i know that there's a need for resource officers for certain reasons and certain purposes but i don't think that there's a need to have one in every school for these little kids especially my linguistically gifted kids that are in this well let me clarify because i think philosophically we're in the same place i wasn't inferring that the three or four identified kindergarten were bad kids they may have something going on like a learning disability or issues at home or sibling issues or something that is keeping them maybe they have adhd that's been undiagnosed who knows my point is let's focus on being proactive and working with mom and dad and working with the teachers and the counselors the earlier we can all collectively work on growing strong and healthy productive kids the fewer need up in high school for that i also am very much in agreement with all the research that shows diverting students from the criminal justice system results in much better outcomes than ticket ticket arrests frankly i've told sros before forget that you've got handcuffs because that's not why you're in the school and to be honest with you i've had school administrators that think they're there for school security no i don't think that's why they're there they're there to be counselors mentors to augment the great work that teachers are trying to do every day only they don't teach traditional math science english and so on they're there to provide yet one more stable adult in the life of children and all children need stable adults that they can trust and turn to so so we're really i think in the same place i probably misstated what what no we um just take a comment and a point of clarification uh we agree 100 of being proactive and that is actually the model that we're bringing to central elementary with community schools and the vision of the board is actually to expand it to all schools we do know that in urban settings and in areas that are impacted by poverty there may be some issues that um you know kids kids have quite frank sometimes you know what our kids have to deal with i would not be able to bear as an adult but uh the way that we are being proactive is to bring those additional resources with social workers with uh you know trauma experts who can actually help our students and our adults deal i think it is our kids are fine they're great is how we adults see them in how we work together and collaboratively to find uh proactive ways to support them that will actually build up the home um so so i think we're on the same page and we want to be proactive it's just a different approach or an extended approach that my board is taking on bringing community schools and we did have a contract with sros but it went through last year so last year we did have a contract and i went through the year the conversation back in the spring that i actually had with um the department as well was um how we're going to tweak it this year because we had funds that were expected to be i mean that we had allocated to be in the fund so we could not use them to buy you know ftes or individuals to come and support with security because we're waiting on the sro so we'll find a model that understanding we may have one and a half sros we're going to be using our our funding to support also community schools and other types of proactive supports for our students thank you for that discussion and i also if we could have jason rogers just speak with you shortly thank you all i think it is worth mentioning that there is an agreement in place that we obviously have of atoms 14 in and around my high ground park i think we've all have seen the success of maha greyhound park as the various residential starts to pop out of the ground what that starts to generate in my mindset is as we see how that starts to come to fruition was the impact on the school district and in part we have a two-part agreement that speaks to about the 330 000 uh 333 thousand dollar contribution from the developer to the school district as it relates to modular trailers you know the city remains uh at the willing and ready to have that conversation so that those funds can be better appropriated we had had some previous conversations with your staff that intimated possibly wanting to look at a different use that would be better i'll call it mobilized in for the school district we are supportive of that we want to be able to figure out how we can get with you all to advance that and we actually have a meeting tomorrow to kind of have those kickoff conversations with your staff so thank you for that in addition to that uh a much more global big picture you know i'll say near term and long you know long-term future for the school district in the city thing around the educational literacy and the improvement that and in support of that would be the multicultural building is what we have called it or have deemed it uh really looking at an advanced degree program that aligns really with the programs and the themes that you were speaking about earlier from academies uh at your high schools that provide opportunities i wouldn't call them at a vocational of a step above that you know from a culinary from an aviation once again tying back into different paths forward for your student body and your base that's in our agreement that's tied to our commitment to the school district and we want to start advancing those conversations which will also be a part of our conversation tomorrow so very excited about where we see our commitment and our relationship with the school district going with respect to these two matters uh and i thought it was worthwhile to bring it up to you all that um there's a there's a lot of great working opportunity with these two projects that hopefully will be able to deliver to the community councilmember noble thank you and um thank you so much mr myers for weighing in on that because we had talked about that before the meeting started and i said are you prepared to answer this question and he said yes i am so there we are um i just want to say that i'm so happy that we can be back because you've all been through so much and as i recall we had a meeting with you maybe just after dr lauria had started but i was so impressed with you that night i just had absolute faith that you were going to be able to um help the students of adam's 14 that you were a great choice by the school board and i am very happy for you president lovato you certainly deserve the title and the position so that's very good that you're there um jason can i ask you about um how many units there are next to the tower on colorado boulevard also that's a multi-family complex as well yes ma'am so the tower uh the property to the south of adams county or the adams tower building that's a 66 unit development it's called south platte crossing it's still working its way through the entitlement process it is their hope if all things go well with construction and financing which they have about 90 of that kind of tied up that they will be open for i think their first level of occupancy uh third quarter of next year and as i recall that was that went up to three bedrooms as well that is a mix of two and three bedrooms i don't know the complete breakout but you are correct ma'am okay and then and then the one across the street that the mayor pro tem referred to is around 90 some units that's correct okay all right thank you just giving you the full picture here what's coming alrighty so very exciting projects for for a city and we can get into details of specific more short-term supports that uh you may be able to offer but into the future and thinking on when we have this community these companies come in to develop not long ago maybe last week two not even two weeks ago there were some articles about the opportunity that our teachers have to afford housing in colorado and our teachers can afford 15 to 20 percent of the homes in colorado that makes it extremely difficult for us to recruit teachers not only us in commerce city as in colorado and i have worked in different states because i worked for a superintendent who was a specialist in turn around who traveled across the state and and i you know joined him and he invited me to go with him so i know all states are fighting for great teachers and i also know colorado is not paying well at all actually we are at the bottom of all the states in how much we pay our teachers so and that's a funding issue about education but we can partner by probably having when these companies come in having some kind of concessions that there will be a number of housing that they're gonna be offering great deals to the teachers uh you know if the teachers are gonna be renting uh they're not gonna have i don't know the deposit or we're just fighting for teachers and i know i had this conversation with amy probably eight months ago um about the new um that are being built now but for the future i think it will be very it will just enrich our community that we have a partnership with the city in that we can offer as part of the a compensation package these great deals in these new developments everybody will benefit from having teachers you know as neighbors because teachers are great people right it's like you want to have police officers you want to have neighbors you want to have some doctors or people in the medical field because that actually makes neighborhoods uh safe and in and a nice place to be so i just wanted to you know put that seat out there because there are a lot of uh you know ideas and in in in developments coming in and we need support for our teachers outside you can already hear me huh all right well thank you so you are um dr lorea you are talking about uh the ability to be for teachers to be able to purchase homes rather because these are all rentals and i uh thank you for for the question i actually think it's it's both right uh it's able to rent if if it's there are opportunities for them to rent that are close to those you know in homes that are close to the schools or to purchase um because you know teachers will will have different needs and preferences but it's just very difficult to find even a place to rent it's in colorado it's extremely expensive and our salaries for teachers are not going up as fast as the home and housing and renting is so um you know they choose to go elsewhere colorado it's as expensive as i don't know well it's a big city like right it's like going to the bahamas and try to live there but anyway i think it's all of the above for just options for teachers and i know these are income qualifying so i don't know if the teachers meet those guidelines that may be some of the concessions and believe me with what colorado pays teachers who may very well qualify and which is unfortunate because they go through a four-year college to be teachers but i think even when it's income if there's a percentage of homes that will not have to qualify for income but it's you know just if they are teachers or if they work for the school system you know they can they can be there without necessarily meeting those qualifications so some i don't know some kind of concessions that's maybe i'm not an amazing conversation that we should have with chaffa to set up some kind of program such as that and maybe work in collaboration with the city school districts and and uh chaffa to see if we can't tweak the guidelines so they they fit the parameters that a teacher would need yeah i i do not know the details i know there are smarter people out there that can figure it out this is just an idea that as a superintendent i know that's a need that we all have you have your area of expertise in housing and development i was wondering can you explain the academies at the high school a little bit more yes so the academies is basically a concept of a small school within a large school so in in large larger districts for example um you know i was in clark county before i came here i had 127 schools in my region i was a regional superintendent i had 39 high schools that i supervised so i had one high school alone it was an ib school international baccalaureate i had another one that was a stem school or steam school that is science technology mathematics i had another one that was performing arts so every child that went there you know in the elem in the um middle school they knew they wanted to go that way and then they would go to a high school that the entire high school was around visual arts performing arts so when you are as a child in a city or in a community or a district that has a lot of options you know they they go to different high schools in in and that's the choices they have they can go to a comprehensive as well but in a small um setting like ours which there are great advantages to being a small school um the the opportunities for students to choose a theme are more limited so the the academies is in one high school you have different pathways or different themes the students go there um it's not that they're locked in for life we're not asking a 13 years old child to make a decision of what they want to be when they grow up you know some of us at 30 do not know that yet but uh but but it's a theme and there are surveys they work with counselors to start understanding what their learning style is what they are attracted to and they learn all the high school standards that any child you know needs to learn but around a theme so if they are doing mathematics and i decided to be in an academy around um performing arts uh then everything in in in the standards are taught around the theme of performing arts so for example i can be looking at the music or the uh the time of the show i don't know um no now i'm making stuff up um but you know around those films because i am definitely not in performing arts should have selected another one to give that that example but um it is around that if they're in the health professions then they learn math and they learn their sciences around relevant project-based activities around health professions so um the the child can switch academies if they go into ninth grade saying i wanted to be in academy a but then after like i don't think i like this one they have an opportunity to change what um that what we have seen in academies because i've been in districts that have had high schools with academies is that we have very few students that will change because as i said before uh is not to lock the students into one profession is to is actually opening their understanding on how much is in a profession you can be an accountant an accountant in the health profession and you can be you know any any role really any any job you can have in any of the professions so the teachers are trained on those they are experts in those fields they also like um you know the themes that they're going to be teaching in so it's a win-win because it's it's relevant and exciting for the teacher to teach in an area that they like uh and also exciting for the for the child um it is based on project learning so um it is not let's sit down and repeat the multiplication facts or you know whatever they need to memorize it is actually uh through projects that the students can choose within this area of interest they apply the standards so a lot of benefits to it each academy because they have 350 to 400 students it really becomes a community so there's a lot of peer support in in in peer encouragement uh for the students and um in in they go you know like a like a family but at the same time they experience the comprehensive large school because some kids like that i have two girls and one of them was all about comprehension the all the things that happened in large school the other one is like the smaller the better so they knowing that there are different personalities the the students do not have to give up the large comprehensive feeling and experience of a school because being in one building they can also experience the large activities we are expecting to have identified the themes probably in about six weeks uh there was a lot of work done throughout the summer and meetings happening with the individuals the students have been surveyed from seventh grade and up the goal is this year if if you will consider this year 0 or your planning year and once the academies are identified then we go into training of teachers so that the teachers can also start selecting which academy they will they will be selecting to or they want to be so this year ninth graders going into tenth grade uh and we are evaluating if it's appropriate to have an academy for tenth graders as well or if we're going to start just with ninth grade but next year today's 8th graders will be coming into an academy and then we're going to build up the academies that way we're going to go two ways so it's going to be 8th graders next year into ninth grade potentially tenth grade it all depends on um the work that that we do and if it's appropriate to have a tenth grade academy uh it's going to go up with the students but we also want to go to the lower grades in middle school to start helping our teachers do project-based learning with our students and to start helping students understand their learning styles you know as soon as they go into middle school and then we'll go down to fifth grade as well very good thank you and i would love to visit central and and see the community school model first hand so uh look for me to be asking for that invitation and then the meeting tomorrow who who always going to be included in that meeting with uh uh ma'am oh no no isn't there a meeting tomorrow okay thank you for that clarification it's going to be some of the uh i'll say more direct and technical staff pertaining to the modular trailer conversion into a more uh i'll say a highly more deployed use of those funds and then other technical staff in and around i think the concept making of the multicultural building of mr marquez myself and other staff that are not present today i'd also like to have a better understanding of what's going on there as well so with respect to your question ma'am uh not actually question but your statement with respect to affordable housing and attainment more affordable attainment of housing for uh for teachers obviously we welcome that conversation look forward to having that in trying to define a path forward that can make sure that you all could be successful with the recruitment and retainment and once again enrichment of your of your staff so thank you so i do have a question about the buildings because you're going right there on the right there by the end line right that property there is the 7001 colorado boulevard with 160 some units or 97 units and then in the one acre you're putting the one acre by one acre of the 66 right next to the where the community building is at right across by the dmv and all that stuff right right so the the private development there's a private developer for both properties that are putting those in i've been to both all the meetings for them so that's why because kind of looking at all that in the development when you pass that to get it build i guess the question is did you think about any kind of retail that should be going into that area i mean there's not there's no stores there's no anything there's i mean what how are you managing going to build and manage the property there when i mean we have one stop sign that's on the corner and there's no nothing else i mean the traffic that you're going through they don't stop there i mean it's that is i mean how are you going to develop that to handle the amount of almost 163 new units between those two so the development of themselves we don't have i would say a programmatic and what i mean programmatic we can't depict we can't out outside of our comp plan and our land use we cannot tell a developer you need to do x y or z we can encourage them we can try to help promote and by sharing them with various data where we have the ability to say you know this is what we're looking for in the development and we actually have some form of actual fee simple control or funding control behind that is when we're actually a partner through either our housing authority authority or a direct relationship in an agreement between the city and that and that developer so when you find those two projects and that's just a form and function because of our limitation as as a local government authority and also our land development code that guides our way forward with the comp plan that being said we have to be a little bit more i'll call it introspective of where our current comp plan is and and what our specific plan for that area which is the stationary and master plan it identifies what property should be residential identifies what property should be commercial what property should be a blending of those two at the end of the day the two properties that we have didn't necessarily meet the test as called out by those two documents for commercial that being said that one developer that will be placing a coffee shop and or a local grocery store or question mark to be determined on the 98 unit site met the call by our council of thinking about being the first through the door right as i like to call it that camel's nose underneath the tent you're going to be the first ones that will be building that will be serving as a catalyst that will be able to help meet a variety of different deserts for our residents in that area whether that's through grocery whether that's through retail whether it's restaurants or even just workforce employment opportunities for those that need it that can have it in its proximity to the rail station so that individual came back and and met that test and we'll be building a 2 000 square foot space for some type of commercial function you will also notice that some of the properties that are zoned and that are called out that we have a missing middle of our zoning to allow for commercial not necessarily to be the entirety but a small a small strategic focused component to help support the area so we're taking the necessary steps in our land development code to promote that as well which should also help to promote some of that commercial activity and or workforce activity for our populists in our residence within that area as well so there's things that we're doing that obviously we can't control how they put that shovel in the ground but we're trying to support and encourage it when they do come through our door which is where we do have the control to do yes ma'am thank you i would like to clarify at one of our recent council members for that property the city paid for a report to be conducted for those houses and it was a tap report and it's addressed a lot of issues for the development in that area such as there was no sidewalks there's no interest for emergency vehicles several other concerns were addressed you know the schools lack of school funding the safety and health and i just want you guys to be aware that two council members one being myself voted against this because the recommendations that were recommended in the report were not even complete such as even art being entered into that area because we do have the rtd train line so those are some of my concerns we didn't even address the issues in the report but yet we approved all of these homes and it's right next to a cement gravel plant as well so i was concerned how is that going to affect the health and safety of the residents living in those homes as well and then another thing that i just wanted to address because i know we're limited for time but i know it was a previous school board that he approved the trailers going up at central elementary school and i think it's very unfortunate because i lived here my entire life and i don't know how many of you guys have looked in these schools but some of the bathrooms don't even have doors etc etc and i think it's really unfortunate that we're building all these homes and we're throwing our students up in trailers instead of finding funding to get them some homes i mean to get them new schools and i think it's really unfortunate and just in closing i wanted to thank you guys um on one other thing i wanted to bring up at one time like i said i've been following city council for years been in commerce city all my life at one time they did offer an ordinance for any teacher police officer or firefighter that lived within the commerce city area and worked in commerce city they offered some type of down payment to offer assistance if they lived in the city so our city attorney is not here today but i will look into that further and then in closing on behalf of the mayor and other city council members we really want to thank you for allowing us to be here today and we'll do whatever we can to work with adam's city 14 school district thank you thank you so much i know i promised we'd get you out of here and we're late um really quickly i know um there's a lot going on in the news about the restructuring of the district and we really wanted to increase the frequency of our meetings with you just so we can um even conversations like this are super helpful around the development everything like that so because we're limited on time maybe we can follow up on this i just don't want so much time to go in between the next meeting with you all so i'm very open to feedback or thoughts or i have feedback but i do want to go on record that i had those same concerns james i mean to me this is very poor planning um not recognizing the issues of the community not looking at the community itself not looking at the needs of the community i sat in on those meetings i was on the original comp plan and that's not was what was planned to go in over there the promise of the light rail was that we were supposed to have some kind of services available for the community not to add more people in and to have those people then have to get on the light rail and take their money elsewhere outside the community so i want you to know that i i was not in support of any of this and i'm one voice but we have to start working together more this is this is uncalled for we should not be working in our separate silos where one does not know what the other is doing we have to start working as a community we have to so 100 i'm on your team this is a quick happy note for you last month the city council voted to give every school in adams 14 as well as 27 j 2 000 per school so i don't know if you've begun receiving that money yet but you will be getting two thousand dollars per school that is awesome thank you is it for anything specific or it's you know um reunion elementary does a golf tournament and they ask us to sponsor last year and this year so we were sponsoring at 2000 and the city council said well in that case let's give every skill school two thousand dollars so you don't even have to put on a golf tournament you will get the 2000.

the chair appreciate a motion to accept the cash balance report as presented supported discussion mrs fitzgerald yes once again i just want to commend the fact that we are able to transfer two million dollars in but um do we usually list any interest separately and have we received interest since our last meeting uh yes we have uh received interest so uh we'll make sure that we'll uh we get that on the following reports thank you and the and the interest as obviously with the rates going up um the the interest income earned on the mmdt account is much higher than it was you know recently that's why it'd be great to see it listed separately just so i can feel happy about it thank you anything further all those in favor anyone opposed okay there's a handout for the consolidated cash reconciliation report uh revolving fund report is in your packet and budget report are there any uh information yes mrs fitzgerald i just want to say a thank you for getting the um the accounts printed in their carryover balance from last year it was very nice to see all that money anything further okay communications donations i see none articles it's not listed here because i think it came in afterwards i don't know was it sunday's paper was the uh article on the uh after doc program i don't know if anybody got a chance to see it but if you if uh if you get a chance you really should pull it up on the eagle tribune and read it it was a very nice article about the young man from the end of her and also about glts it really really was nice so if you get a chance to read it you should uh public participation scene then superintendent evaluation timeline john put together a timeline for my evaluation so that it'll be easier for us to ensure that we meet these uh deadlines on the timeline and get clarity to the process for the evaluation um and so that by the end of the school year we have everything complete and able to submit the final results to the department of ed by july 1st it starts with the self-assessment which will be on september 27 analysis goal setting and plan development october 11 2022 plan implementation and collection of evidence throughout the school year formative assessment evaluation on march summative evaluation on may 9 2023 submit once we've done that all evaluations will be submitted to the chair or designee by may 21st 23rd 2023 and the district committee will vote on the final evaluation on june 6 2022 which is the second last meeting of the school year mr show yes other than um changing those last two dates the additional dates to 2023 um oh yeah i'm very comfortable with the timeline um i like the fact that um we're submitting it in may so that then we can do a final vote two weeks later i just think that it's a workable timeline and i'm happy to have it in front of me zoella did you have a question i'm sorry oh just point it she beat you she beats most people don't feel bad anybody else yes sir frank are we setting his goals uh within the next two in the next meeting uh i'm not setting his goals at all i don't like the steps he's going to give his goals right but the the um the standards which we are supposed to assign he is going to give us his goals and then we're going to approve them on if they're there's something we want if there's something we want to approve his goals are separate from the standards so uh um when i do the self-assessment i can review the standards that we'll be um working with for the school year before and then uh october 11th i can present um which standards and the goals that fall within the standard set will be part of my plan anything further i think it's and i think on step two frank is when when if the committee has specific goals that they want me to work on would be presented at that time as well anything further [Music] okay september calendar in the packet do you have any comments on that john or no just just that wanted to give you enough each month we'll give you an update on anything that's uh happening in the school on that particular month so this being the first one in september uh so you'll see that at the first meeting that we have in any particular month okay uh frank was that giving out the last of me i think you received at the end of last school year before the last meeting of the mighty either been the last or second last meeting well i can get a copy to everybody again next meeting or can uh email it to you if you want if you'd like tomorrow so just so in case anyone doesn't have it okay we'll do i'll do that we'll have i'll have sue send it to you tomorrow could we also ensure that the calendar is also functioning on the website it just doesn't seem to ever be updated or properly functioning yes uh so we i have cassandra actually as we speak is working on the web on our website um and you'll see a lot of updates and changes over the next couple of weeks that she'll make sure that we we're trying to get it back to up to date on each each area of the website and different staff members who have responsibilities for the information we'll be working closely with her to ensure that that information is put on the website in a timely way and then any of our social networks that we have any information that needs to align with that will also be done okay john uh update the committee on the district on the admissions please so you have a copy of our admissions uh numbers from each of our communities in each of the community schools as of august 24 2022 you'll notice some wherever there were discrepancies or changes from a particular school such if you look at we have a student coming from the mars grammar school but now lives in lawrence so uh if you see situations like that we i asked brenda if she put the address down so we know why somebody from methuen is listed under lawrence to help give us better clarity on that so you look at the very bottom you'll see all the different schools that are out of district where we have students coming from but they now live in lawrence and we have excuse me i'm sorry john excuse me mrs mrs fitzgerald yes um i guess i'd just rather see over in the far left column it says enrolled but then on the right column it says applicants and we know we had i believe 16 almost 1700 students apply so where it says applicants it probably should be changed to enrolled students and maybe then another column that would show us how many applicants from each of those schools sure we can we can update the applicant list so what you're looking at there really is the enrolled students yeah there was far more applicants so we can adjust the format in which we present it to you so we have as of august 24th we had 438 students i believe we have about 440 at this time we've taken in a couple more since then and are still looking at a few more reviews so we will probably be a little over 4 40 at the start of school we typically have some that may not show up on that first day or we may have some that may come in for a few days and leave so then we'll again uh there may be an opportunity where we may take a few more students again to fill those slots so we stay at about 440.

any questions excuse me any questions for the superintendent i believe it's somewhere around thousand five hundred and fifty but i'll get to the exact number uh so that you know exactly but it's a little bit under sixteen hundred welcome frank are these just the freshmen these are just freshmen yes anything further yo yes john sorry i'll have um we'll send you the uh 10th graders because it's not on this report we did take in uh i think i'm not sure somewhere somewhere under 20 10th grade students so i'll get you that list as well i'll ask we'll email that to you also and i think we might have taken in two 11th graders anything further john along with that could you uh put these the size of each grade sure how many of each christmas okay uh john new higher demographics please um we had a request to provide the committee with the demographics of our new hires this year so what you have there is a report in front of you that lists uh the name of the applicant uh if they were a diverse candidate uh and what department they will be uh working in so on the second page it gives you a final analysis where we have we had 39 total new hires as of well as of the end of last week i believe and then so we had 39 new hires 20 total were diverse new hires which gave us a 51 of new hires are diverse um 18 out of the 39 hires were teachers eight out of the 18 teachers were diverse teachers 44 which is 44 percent of the new hires of teachers were diverse so we continue to try to implement strategies to continue to improve those numbers and i think they're significantly better than they were last year and we still have a i think a couple more positions where we're trying to fill we have two openings one in it the shop it uh informational technology and one in biotechnology we've done some strategies in order to open school with both those positioned open but we hope to fill them soon i think we have one applicant in it if someone told me the other day so we are still working in trying to find applicants for those positions [Music] anything further okay thank you in your packet organizational chat questions or comments mrs fitzgerald hold on one sec um i just had a general comment under our maintenance supervisor title does not match up with the position that's listed tonight so should that position be approved i would want it to reflect that way on the um organizational chart are you clear with that john yeah so it's funny you say that because just before the meeting i was meeting with susan and we noticed that that was the wrong title on there so we will change that title so that's director of facilities it should be director of facilities yep in my other life i was yeah we can't catch up we can't get anything by you mrs fitzgerald are you willing to make a uh a motion to accept oh no not that one i'm sorry we don't accept that pardon me moving on to the rfp for the phase four field so the uh state's four field which is that field far uh beyond this uh softball field that we had uh filled in the contractor who did all our work donated all that fill and we've filled all that it's been filled in pretty much all the way except for a small section can't be filled because we need a retaining wall and so um we were hoping to do it without a retaining wall but they didn't feel that one that we'd get the length we want on the field and two that we would get a lot of erosion on the field if we didn't put a retaining wall there so we need to put out an to have someone in constructing that retaining wall which is a large wall it's about 20 feet high and about 80 feet long and and then they can bring in the fill and bring in the loom and finish up the field but we need to put out an rfp in order to do that we have eight hundred thousand dollars or i think approximately eight hundred thousand the last time i looked in our field budget that we haven't spent yet and we also have over 500 000 in our [Music] budget for rentals but we expect this cost to be well we we have to also put the loom down and seed so we're probably looking between everything uh probably a little over a hundred thousand to finish all that up to make that field playable marilyn yes so you're saying that that retaining wall can be built plus the seating and everything for a hundred thousand the seating uh we expect that to be a little over a hundred thousand dollars to build the retaining wall um the material itself is about 40 000 and then we need to have uh the fill brought in and well the heat that that part of it's donated so then we need to pay for some loom and seating we're gonna uh the we can i asked them to give us a price also on uh if we were to irrigate it but if for some reason we thought it came in at a good price i'd bring it back to the committee vivian um i'm hoping as a committee that we come to an agreement um to ensure some consistency in order to approve any rfps going forward um out of curiosity i'm not seeing anything attached so regardless if it's only one bid that was submitted are we not is it not required to there's no no to approve an rfp to go out okay it's the beginning okay no but maybe i'm not trying to confuse you it's the beginning stages of it oh okay i'm thinking we're here to approve of an rfp okay no no it's just to allow to put one together well my question still stands so going forward when we're going to approve uh a bid regardless if it's just one bid or multiple bids are we going to see those bids attached regardless if it's just one that was submitted you'll get all the bids that are submitted okay yep just for clarification we would have you would have to come back where we could actually read the rfp to approve it so that would be step number two we're just approving um john and rob or whatever writing up what we're looking for in a bid so every step of the way would be able to am i correct in saying that john yes so i will meet with the engineer to determine what should be in the rfp so um right now i know that we in order for us to move forward to finish the field we have to have that retaining wall and uh i'm asking him also to put into that rfp uh uh fini bringing in some loom and the work that needs to be done to do this uh uh the seating and then also if he would uh give me a a kind of a idea of what it might cost if we were to put an irrigation system in it if it's too expensive then we would not i wouldn't put that in the rfp just unless i brought it to committee first mrs fisto yes my feeling is that we have spent millions on upgrading our fields and this would be the last step to make them even better and bigger so i certainly would want to go ahead with the rfp but is it possible to have an rfp looking for two different prices one that would be just the retaining wall and the loam and seating and everything and then a second one that would be the addition of the irrigation system so if it were workable you wouldn't have to come back to us or is that not allowed to have two different things in the same rfp i can have them do an rfp with everything in it and then we could um pull pull the uh not do certain portions of it if we decided we didn't want to do certain portions of it if it came in higher than what we could then eliminate aspects of the rfp hey uh frank um i'm kind of confused when because rfp is to look which is will be the cheaper one of the all the bits that come in so marilyn wants to separate one portion to have two separate rfp which is probably a good idea but it sounds like to me do we have somebody in mind that we're really looking to give this because then that's not an rfp that's awarding somebody or something already this this rfp um the contractor that donated the soil um he donated that so he'll put in the rest of the fill once the walls put up moving anything beyond that he would have to bid on if he was interested in doing the work as it would be open to anybody to bid on the part that he wouldn't be bidding on but he can't finish putting in the fill until the the wall is built so um but he's willing to if he doesn't get the if he doesn't get the bid then he has no problem with bringing in the rest of the fill he committed to that okay anything further okay she'll accept the motion on the rfp for the i'll move the recommendation of the superintendent for an rfp for stage four of our field project for a second discussion all those in favor say leo oh i'm sorry i didn't i didn't see you i'm sorry that's okay leo um actually i'm moving my hand late so we're voting on the rfp process now without the whole thing written before us yeah you'll see the rfp before you vote you know you're just voting for to allow to get it written to prove that i can go ahead and get it written and then you'll see it before it goes out to to approve the rfe rfp excel itself when you're fine and comfortable with what's going out there then we'll put it out later all those in favor anyone opposed okay thank you uh principles principles report principal zielinski yes good evening i just wanted to share a few things in terms of summer program programming some work that staff did over the summer to prepare for school year 2022-23 and just briefly talk about our opening professional development and our opening of school so this summer we had programming for 135 students we had 75 to depending on the day 75 to 90 freshman 101 students but we had 75 consistently attended these are rising 9th graders that came for four weeks for the summer we had an english learner program which was four weeks they focused on different language domains each week we had 20 students attend that and our special education services they had 15 students attend a four-week specialized they call it kind of like a specialized week they also focused on different things for the week and our reggie readiness or our credit recovery we had four stu 40 students this summer that um you know made up classes met competencies so they're ready for the next grade so it was busy but i wanted to share that for you we also had as you know we're implementing a new schedule part of our new schedule this year has the win block which is what i need and i'll go through that a little bit as well as the seminar courses so last year when we decided to do the schedule and develop these things we we realized that we needed to create all this material but we wanted to make sure that we had our teachers engaged in the work because they're going to be the ones that are implementing it so we posted positions for any staff member to apply to develop seminar courses and also collaborate in kind of be our early adopters for win so as a reminder win is what i need it is going to be fifth period on the academic side it's a shorter class it's 43 minutes we are really going to work on use of data to identify needs of students and place them appropriately students that may need different supports can also get opportunities for we want to expand this for opportunities for enrichment as well as just intervention we we know there's also going to be an opportunity for them to really become self-directed learners maybe they want to be in a um you know an online course also we want to get to some personalized learning placement is going to be once you're in a wind block you're not there for the whole year it's really going to be almost like weekly depending on what your schedule says what your needs are maybe you were absent you need to go make up a test maybe you need additional support in a class for mcas so it's a it's it's kind of overwhelming when you think about it but many many schools do it and we had um we have uh our instructional coaches working with the assistant principals to kind of develop this uh they're working with our information officer isabel we're using a platform called myflex learning and it's really come together i'm really excited tomorrow all of our staff will be trained on what it is and how they actually will be working as win t you know in teaching the first day for wynn we're calling it win advisory and that is the day where students are going to sit down and self reflect along with their teacher to decide where they need to go for the week so we're super excited about this we also know that this is going to be a great opportunity for our students with disabilities and our english learners to get more personalized learning so that is one we also mentioned a lot the seminar courses and the difference between seminar and when when is that strategic support class seminar is a class that we have developed and i say we really the teachers have done it all summer um they are contained they're content based courses so they're not intervention they're actually based on the standards and every quarter all students are going to rotate through english math history and science so they we what our hope is is that these classes will be expanded into future electives within the content area so i just wanted to share as i mentioned we had teams of teachers that did this work they had some training on universally designing the lessons and we had some specific requirements and each grade level has a seminar course and i just want to share some of the some of the courses that they came up with um you know it's things that are standards based but it really gives some students a little bit of choice you know a little bit of additional instruction that's targeted so we have some you know they're looking at history through film they're looking at world events spoken poetry um bioethics and facts and fictions of space so we're hoping that our students will really be engaged in these um they're almost like many courses and along the way we'll be collecting feedback not only from staff that have that are delivering them but also from students because we'd like to know from the students what courses they would be interested in kind of expanding into electives i'm so oh yeah go ahead yes so is the seminar which sounds really exciting flipping the page and seeing the descriptions there is that like a boost class is it happening once a week how is it scheduled yep it's a seminar is every day um but it's every like so for example um you may have quarter one you'll have the english quarter two you'll have math science and history so they they'll have it um all of the teachers will have all of their students but only a quarter at a time so it's almost like a mini course and um what this what the teachers are really excited about is um some of the the the topics that they that they chose are standards-based but they're also things that they haven't necessarily had a lot of time to really focus on so this really allows for the students to get that experience so i mean some of them i'm really excited for it i want to be a student yeah is this effective immediately um that we will be incorporating this or is there uh to be announced date that this will come into effect this is for this school year so all this work this summer was done by all of our all of our staff so we had teacher leaders that facilitated it along with administrators and many many teachers who to develop these courses tomorrow the teachers that developed them will actually be sharing them out through their departments so everyone will be prepared to teach so yes this is effective immediately this is our new schedule and are we reviewing um how successful it is in terms of potentially expanding to more courses that we can add to the seminars yeah that's our plan um we want to take it slow and steady we wanted to have this seminar which to me in the schedule is actually a placeholder for future electives it's a placeholder where we can have get back a world language it's a placeholder with maybe one of these classes like the one about bioethics maybe that becomes a science course that's a semester long but this year we're trying we're trying these topics out to see um the engagement and the um you know the rigor level and just to cap it off i just what what really is intriguing to me is the finance and budgeting um because i think it's so important to drill into our youth financial literacy and um i think i speak to many parents and just people in general who have been um trying to advocate for for us to get this into the schools um we don't teach this enough so i'm i'm looking forward to finding out more in depth as to each and every uh seminar course as to what it consists of that's great and i can share some additional details as well all of them are going to be unveiled tomorrow to the staff so uh just very quickly some of you were here this morning at our opening we had um it was great to welcome um all of the staff back into the building that's one step closer to welcoming the students back which we're super excited for on thursday and next tuesday the superintendent and i shared some remarks our leadership team also kind of set i just wanted to share this with the um school committee we have a road map uh for this year and our road map is really trying to establish purpose share purpose and also these are the steps on the roadmap again we're really trying to focus our work on our school improvement goals the ones we set last year this year they're just an expansion of it part of this work is the development of the schedule which includes the win block it includes the seminar courses um it is also our multi-tier system of support advancing that work our focus this year for sel is diversity belonging equity and inclusion and finally our last goal is assessment and so developing that so this roadmap is what we went over with the staff today is our new schedule we have a professional development plan this year which we're calling the seasons of learning we've chunked the um to prep pd into fall winter and spring and we're really trying to provide some additional choice for our staff and we kind of laid that out today and professional collaborate collaboration days are new this year we have seven of them and those seven will be to enhance the work have faculty meeting and we're really going to have a strategic focus on the use of data in the classroom and beyond we we ended our roadmap in sharing our purpose as a leadership team and we had an opportunity for staff to really connect and kind of share their purpose so you can see that this was just some of their thoughts today they did and you know they they actually do it and i thought um it's really just great to see it's great to have the teachers in and just to see we have teachers here that are extremely dedicated not only to vocational education um but to give things back and um it was really nice to see vivian sorry i should stop saying one last thing no it's okay um it just dawned on me so if us so our students required to rotate each quarter they have to choose a different um subject or let's just say they want to stick with science are they able to keep it within the science the subject the science all four quarters um that's a great question this year we um they don't need we're just rotating them through because there is only one set course per grade level so there's a grade 9 science course in the future depending on how these seminar courses go and the feedback we get from staff and students it could be that students would be able to say instead of taking the bioethics seminar they would take bioethics which we which would be developed as a course so it would be longer periods of time but for this year because it's a really it's a big transition for our staff it's a heavy lift it's exciting but it's new we wanted to go slow so we can really kind of make sure that what we are you know what we're planning is like we want to get the students reaction to it and also get some more feedback and we also had our it was very hot but we uh also shared we had our second annual staff photo um so i wanted to share that out of the football field it was hot but it was great frank once again i want to thank everybody that helped to work on this this is a great information and visuals to look at especially with the wind block being brought in in the seminars so i'm going to thank you miss zalinski superintendent and everybody that was involved in this i particularly loved your title roadmap with one saying the start foundation of our road trip this year i think we've been take going on a road trip since covid and we've just been moving forward and doing better than most other school districts so in today's having a conversation with some of the teachers it was good to hear some of their comments um some shop teachers wanted a loving day planning time are the teachers coming in brand new and loving the cohesiveness and the core and family feel and some are even loving the soon to be daycare it's great to hear thank you so i want to thank you and everybody that that was involved with them what's that mr fitzgerald i ditto exactly what frank said this last page and kudos to you for putting this together with all that you had to do today and obviously this was done after they had met but every one of these sayings except the fact that adam poros listed i wasn't sure about that but they're inspirational and you and john both this morning talked about your excitement in looking forward to this year as frank said hopefully covet is in the rearview mirror or at least all of the things that happen and it's like we not only can be back to what we're supposed to be doing but i feel like we're it's a whole new day this is really inspirational to read all these things thank you frank the only thing and then thank you marilyn the only thing missing from here is the regis thing you had earlier um reggie's and what each letter represented um because it hasn't been finalized yet that would be something that should have been included and i know you guys are still working on it but it would have been a great view thank you anything further sue are you done you're all set yes thank you okay no thank you okay uh reports uh from uh reported committees uh all business let's see just for committee priorities policies section b b d a school committee organizational meeting have a motion on that please i move that we approve section b as presented be dna um and i would ask sue was this reviewed with you and your cohort that has been doing all those thank you very much we have a motion to have a second discussion all those in favor anyone opposed new business table matters personnel considerations i see no resignations no leave of absence retirements or appointments superintendent job postings these will require a vote ladies and gentlemen [Music] two job postings this evening the first one is i brought both these the last meeting but i'm going to explain a little more the why it's so important for us to move forward with hiring a comptroller and which is a salary between 80 and 100 000 dollars this is a new position uh and let me when maria was working for him many times i had suggested to her that we hire a comptroller because it's very difficult to manage all the finances one director of finance to try to manage all the finance particularly when i started 13 years ago our budget was in the 20 million range we're now in the 40 million dollar range so management of our budget has gotten a lot greater with a lot more pieces and responsibilities not just in the day-to-day operation of the school but the work that we do with the department of education the department of revenue has become much more intense and more uh with more regulations and everything that is entailed in managing our our uh finances we have more grants than we ever had before so that's more funding to manage and more regulations to ensure that we adhere to right now a lot of the grant work and the managing of the grants and the finances and ensuring that we're doing everything in our grant that we said we would do plus meet all the regulations has been done with joanne overseeing that but has been a daunting task for her to keep up with the kinds of funds that we've been getting in we have more students than ever more programs more staff all of it which means more work for our fine or someone in charge of overseeing not even in terms of managing the finances and and overseeing our staff was working in the business office and we truly do need someone with more expert expertise in accounting is someone that has a lot of expertise in accounting works closely with department of revenue to ensure that we're in compliance with all of our financial regulations and policies and protocols and procedures manages all our cl our financial accounts closely uh as of right now um or coming into even as as of last year uh particularly we were one year we're one year behind our financial reports and trying to manage our finance with the department of ed and with our our auditors we've struggled a lot with our auditors last year and continued this year seems like it'll be better so you know trying to manage all our processes that are in place today is a much bigger job to expect one person to oversee that has become very difficult and uh so i would recommend to the committee that we consider uh hiring a comptroller um in order to make our business office not only more effective and efficient but safer and secure in terms of overseeing the finances and making sure that we're complying to all the laws and regulations again some of the financing i don't know if you noticed but there has been a change in procurement laws which allows us to push from 50 000 to 100 000 without having to go to a bid process but uh being able to do it through a uh quote process uh so that in itself uh is going to require more closely oversight and i know that joanne has been talking about you know her future next year might be different than it is this year and it would be uh important to have someone uh in place to a lot of the work that uh or some of the work that a comptroller does is oversee some of the financial stuff that uh joanne does who's been really challenging having a difficult time managing all that on her own so for those reasons i believe we should consider uh posting for comptroller have a recommendation from the superintendent have a motion on that police do i have a second i'll put a second for the discussion used to hate them i like the point of this i know how much work we put on the girls in the office and the more we put on them the more they do but we definitely have a burnout factor we don't want to keep burning out our people i think this is a good uh a good thing for them yeah especially with joanne thinking about uh retiring or moving on or yeah but they're over burdened they're overworked the more we give them the more they do and i think enough's enough we're burning out people thank you yeah i think i think a key thing to really can understand also is that you know for the last few years we've been late with almost every report we sent to the department of revenue and department of uh dsc over the last few years and that's because it's been too much work and responsibility of the finance director to try to keep up with it all so it doesn't look great for us to have late reports all the time it would be awesome if we could get our reports in on time and it also prevents more likely that if you're overloaded and you're trying to keep up with everything it gets very difficult um and not making a mistake because you're always it takes very time consuming and it's um and the expertise and the knowledge of a of an accountant is much different than a finance director or many of the people we have in the office now they bring it next and for years and years we always had a controller up until i took this position is when we stopped having controller but before i came on board we always had a controller at the school if you remember um charlie fox had a controller comptroller and then uh his comptroller became the finance director and then he had leon uh and then maria was the first one not to have one felt she could do the job without one and did a good job but it was always a challenge to meet the deadlines and and put a lot of pressure and stress on everybody to do a little bit more frank i'm sorry mrs fitzgerald yes i had a couple questions the first one is is this a considered an administrative maps up position or 1707 neither okay we have 21 administrators on that chart and um most systems that have 17 16 1700 students do not have 21 administrators this would make 22 administrators and if those things get out there how do we answer why we need i know why we need the ones we have at least i hope i do but i just um i don't know it makes my stomach upset my brain upset to think of adding another administrator so that is question one and you answered it um question two how many of these 1816 excuse me 16 duties right now um a direct would be directly taken away from our finance director in other words how does her load get lightened and which of these are right now either duplications or being done solely by the finance director like i looked at the end-of-year report assisting in that that's kind of a thing that you have to help with the principal helps with everybody helps with and for obvious reasons we haven't had it in on time for the past few years so i just wanted to know what duplication of duties were listed in this job description and then should this pass i guess i would i for some reason i don't think the term at least is very professional i would rather have it say under the education um that it would be a minimum of rather than at least it just um doesn't sound as worthy or whatever that's it i think did you read the at least [Music] minimum qualifications it says um in the second or the first sentence um a close related field and at least five years of related experience i would wanted to say a minimum of five years of related experience just terminology frank yeah i should have let maryland go first um [Music] never happened but um and i'm gonna agree with marilyn on the amount of administrators we have but i want to hear from the director of finance actually maryland i don't think your question was answered of what was um what was being removed from the director of finance's um responsibilities over to the controller that's one i'm going to echo on that how many people we have in the finance department outside of the um director of finance and a couple of people i know that work there so right now i believe we have four staff members that report to melissa to in the payroll office two in the um joanne's office am i missing one one of them reports to hr yep social report yeah and i think that um i don't i don't necessarily think it's a matter of of taking responsibility certain responsibilities i think whether it be the director of finance or whether it be joann's position that or payroll or any of the positions supporting this person uh would take on some of those responsibilities that are that that's part of the part of the necessity of having some of the things taken off each of the members who work in the business office plate now because they have too much on their plate particularly if if we want to have not and there are other safeguards that we may not have in place now that we then can put in place to manage our day-to-day operations and our financial reports uh it's uh it's amazing um the reports that that do go in that it the amount of work that goes into it that would then be shared with the comptroller but this oversight and the final uh responsibility still follows on the director of finance but somebody that's going to assist and ensure you know that each and every piece of it is that particular controller may have direct contact with some of the people in the dsc or department of revenue who has the expertise and knowledge about accounting and can talk the language that's so critical when working with those particular departments i think is important it's not so much taking away responsibilities from anybody but supporting these peop other people we have in place now to do their job better and to provide the kind of oversight that's critical and making us more effective more efficient with regards to finance you know in terms of administrators we've grown from 12 about 1200 students to 1700 students in the last 13 years so we have more teachers more administrators in order to be effective we brought we have brought in more administrators and it's one of the reasons that has made us a more a better school i believe more success students are are performing at a higher level students are getting better jobs schools is the climate in the environment the facilities every aspect of the building is improved i think in the last few years because of those administrators uh have done a great job in providing the support that's needed for for teachers one of the things that i always say about administrators is when we have professional development and we're implementing new uh strategies and methods and all that it's our administrators need to have need to be able to have every every skill and knowledge that we expect of the teachers to improve and get better at i expect my administrators to have those skills and knowledge that they can support the changes and and the things that happen so it takes a strong team and a quality team to make that happen so um and some of these uh the responsibilities say they take on are making a difference in the lives of teachers in order that they can do their job better as well and as goes with a controller it's going to make us a better business department and a safer department in terms of making sure that we are overseeing a 40 almost 45 million dollar budget when you think we have three people overseeing it it's not a lot of people and it's an awful lot of money that we're trying to manage with ver and when you think about it you have your director of finance really responsible for 45 million dollars almost all by herself because she in the end as well as myself um has to make sure that uh no laws are broken and that we're you know doing it correctly uh that's a difficult job and an almost impossible job when we see how much we've grown in in over the last few and then particularly in the last two or three years i think we've up almost over 10 million dollars in our budget so there's been a all of a sudden a quick jump in finances because of the amount of students we've taken in more students does mean more work and more responsibilities across the board including our finances i will agree with you so are we looking at promoting somebody into this position are we looking to hire an extra body for this position we would be looking to hire a new staff member for this position it doesn't mean that someone in the in the school couldn't apply but if they did we'd have to fill their position okay thank you vivian um considering pretty much what you have mentioned superintendent um regarding how reports have been submitted late um i'm just curious as to where was this urgency when maria was in position um if this is something that has been an issue for quite some time um we as a school have been uh managing millions millions of dollars so um i'm just curious as to like why didn't we hire someone like what justification do we have in not hiring someone for this position years prior um and i'm not sure if it's a misunderstanding or i didn't get to hear what was what would be the changes in our current um director of finance essential functions like how what are the changes on her essential functions considering this new position so um well when marie since when murray was with us i uh particularly last couple of years went to her and told her i believed we needed comptroller that there was too much on her plate that we're always getting reports in late i didn't come running to the committee saying well we're always getting reports in late but if the fact of the matter is we were getting reports in late all the time rarely did we meet a deadline from the department of ed but one of the things you have to know with the department of the department of revenue they always extend the deadline they will say all right we'll give you another two weeks or we'll give you another month or you know they continue to try to accommodate us uh but it doesn't it still doesn't make it right it means i i personally feel it's important for us to get things in on time makes us more effective more efficient and ensures that that the department of vet and department of revenue have trust in us i think that's important particularly when you're going for grants or going for other finances that you want you know you want the people within the that are providing the funds to you to trust you and feel so and have confidence in your department and i think you know having that support will make a difference in that um you know when i when i talk to jay sullivan who is you know a head of finances for the department of education and uh i can often hear it in his voice when he's telling me well how come you're not you know how come you can't get it on time or you know um how much more time do you need he's frustrated uh and that's that's the truth of the matter um but at the end of the but at the end of the day you know what's most important that it was all honest it was all done you know the finances were done uh there was no uh you know improprieties there was everything was you know uh correctly done and well done it just couldn't get done on purpose on time many times and a lot of safeguards that we could put in place uh i think that would ensure that nothing inappropriate would happen could be put in place as well which we're always it's always important to be the safest we can when it comes to that so with with forgot what was your other question i don't think i answered that i didn't know if i misunderstood or i just didn't catch uh what was said and i believe marilyn was the first person to mention regarding what what was duplicated from the director of finance's essential functions considering this new position and their essential functions so basically what i'm trying to say is um does um does our director of finance func essential functions change is there any changes to her duties considering this new position that you would like to put out her duties and responsibilities don't change she just has someone to support and help her meet those responsibilities and in the case of an accountant have some expertise that she may not have um just because the nature of the position and the experience and background that a accountant brings to the table accountant would be able to communicate uh more closely with our uh auditors because auditors are all accountants for the most part so the kind of uh people that do your auditing are the kind of uh it's kind of what an accountant has some expertise in that to ensure that we're going to meet all the expectations that they would have looking there'd be another pair of eyes uh basically auditing day to day making sure our finances are correct and right uh so that when our auditors come in we're less likely to have any errors or when they bring back the report that we don't have any findings that we have to [Music] fix that trippy at the moment yeah i was just looking at the chart um trying to get some kind of clarity understanding as to where so they would be under the green the the blocks of green if that was a position to be approved they would be reporting directly to the director of finance which are yellow blocks yes what's that i don't even think director of finance yes oh my my apologies director finance okay so then the comptroller would be in yellow no right the comptroller would be in gray as well okay i was just looking at all the admin positions that's the reason why i'm asking i'm all set excuse me frank for one second uh john this wouldn't be a non-rep position being a controller i think this would be a non-rep position okay i'm i'm sorry sue okay so it wouldn't be it wouldn't be in the administrator's window okay no this would not be an administrator's union frank um john i think you went a long way around to say that this is just a person that's going to be assisting director finance which would have been just a lot easier to say than everything that you went on saying it which would have cut down the conversation a lot shorter um and then and that department is definitely the most needed department if we are adding another person there because like you said if we are reporting stuff late to the to the department of ed it it can affect our funding as well as the irs um so i have no problem approving the the voting for this but it should have just been a lot clearer this is another person that's going to help in that department and it's going to help the director of finance would have been a lot shorter and simpler um i did have one more question but i think um john just it just would have been simpler just saying we're getting another person to assist director of finance and we are aware there was a lot of some certain things that needed to be reported on time that wasn't but also we had what was it a year two years without a person in that position as a as a controller it's been longer than that mrs oh the director fine mrs fitzgerald yes um now that i have heard it is not an administrative position and i do not believe it should be i have no problem with it being non-rep i can support it however i know when jerry came in he was brought in for that other set of eyes and he's been a great set of eyes so um and i remember all the reasons why we had a treasurer come on so the only thing i would ask when this is posted that we hold true to what we're saying that we get the master's degree and it says shall have not might have but shall have and that we make sure that as many of these qualifications as have been listed with good reason are fulfilled and even if it takes us a little bit of time to find the right person i would like us to hold to what we've said here thank you mr hayden i agree with maryland except for the non-rep this person should be under some type of contract everybody in the past were under a contract yeah but a single contract no yes that person would be under a contract but it would be an individual contract not a union contract they wouldn't be in in the union given the nature of the work and uh and the confidentiality that's so critical in that position they would have to be a non-uh not a union represented represented person oh excuse me mrs fitzgerald yes are our payroll people non-rep or are they in the union because i can't think of a more confidential uh group of people than are in payroll if there is some way we can uh figure out how to have these people represented i mean this person excuse me that would be an even better situation but in terms of confidentiality of it i would beg to differ every single thing that happens in the finance department is public record and um versus in payroll which things are far more confidential so i just think there might be some way we could work that out hey did you have a question for you did you have a question yeah you're wrong yeah she says her light's off yeah sorry i have a couple of comments uh one is that i did write in my notes since the beginning of everybody's debate that this position is assisting of the director of finance that's what it's that's what it looks like so um to agree with mr cirillo that's what we're supposed to be talking about since the the beginning that um marilyn asked i mean asked the question um i do have a que so i'm going to make another comment before i have i asked a question um in terms of the inconsistency of the requirements um we have been talking about that all along so i would like to see that we have this under control i want us to have a plan to have the requirements of any position on the control in terms of terminology because we should not be every meeting that we are talking about by position talking about why does it set at least five years instead minimum of five years just to have that example and i have a question ncp po certification prefer but not required first what is that ncpp certification which i i don't know what it is if anybody knows it's a purchasing certification which i hold so it would be helpful if the comptroller had it but it's not needed because i already have it purchasing certification yes yeah okay but it's not required because an assistant doesn't require purchase and request okay thank you um that's what i have yes thanks anything further okay marilyn you oh i'm sorry uh jerry excuse me yeah just uh a few comments um on this so as the superintendent and uh leo mentioned back um several years ago we did have um a school business administrator in a comptroller so it was leon and gary so for many many years um that worked really well and it's for me it not having like a timely audit being done or being behind has reverberations it has consequences like on continuing disclosure and what we're trying to do with our bonds every year so i if you would have asked me and if i had a vote which i don't i understand but this is something that i to have a layer in this position uh in this in this structure makes all the sense in the world to me because i i'm i'm in you know another industry but we do have layers like this with certain subject matter experts that handle this kind of work so um and and so that where we want to ramp up and get back to where sort of where we were i think is is a prudent uh smart decision that the committee would make that's i think i do have to agree with the treasurer of being in business i know when i go for financing um right after they say hello they say you know we want all your reporting and they don't want to hear that it's uh you know under extension they want they want all your reporting and they want it now you know what i mean to help them make their decisions so i do have to agree with the treasurer anything further uh frank um so the mcppeo is the massachusetts certified public purchasing office official program and that's for anybody that's doing financial purchasing okay see if i can sort this out maryland made a motion but you did tommy made the motion oh i thought you made the motion on this no oh therefore comments uh right okay um mr thank you for the correction mr hayden uh you wish to amend your motion to include mrs fitzgerald's additions or not i like it as it stands but mrs fitzgerald does make some good points so i'd like to amend it to what maryland has okay maryland can you go over those points again so sue can get it into the record please yes that it is not a maps of position that um we hold true when posting the position for requiring a master's degree and changing the at least to minimum of five years okay uh frank you want to uh mend your uh second two uh seconds for um promotion mostly approved okay anything further all those in favor aye and you want to pull anyone opposed thank you john excuse me superintendent director of facilities and operation police position with rob retiring in a few days there's a need to post for his position director facilities and operations we redid the posting and made some changes and articulated some of the job responsibilities more clearly and in terms of the qualifications on the contractor's license we said professional license required or have the qualifications to obtain obtain the license so if they meet the qualifications for the license and haven't haven't applied for it we would consider them as well so that's i think the biggest ques one of the biggest questions that was uh concerns that we had in the last uh posting here we have a recommendation from this one second discussion discussion please yes mrs ficho somebody's got it sorry oops i'm sorry okay um fastadas i want to thank the superintendent for this is a totally different document and um it it it's phenomenal when you see the essential functions what is required of this person and we have spoken of rob shares forever on how he meets every one of these essential functions every single day and while i know that the next person will have to come up to speed if they ever can reach um his equal but i still feel adamant i'm i'm really happy with this but i still don't like the license i say that we don't hire somebody that does not have that contractor's license if we have in-house candidates and we can hold our breath until they get that certification i don't know but there are people out there that already have it and maybe somewhere there is another rob but i really am uncomfortable with the size of our building all if i read every single word in this and i was in awe of all that has to happen every single day to make this building the phenomenal place it is the immaculate place it is and i just feel that that the the fact that we have kind of backed down on having the education part every single s everything says preferred but when it comes to that contractor license they need to pull building permits they need to do all these things i say you know let's get someone who is licensed or get if we have people right here in front of us that just haven't become licensed let's help them get that way but um i i just feel it's really really important to have that above all else okay uh zoilo i cannot agree more with modeling actually exactly what i have um question on this whole thing the um have a qualification to obtain license why do we want to hire somebody that has the qualification and then what what entire somebody to have the qualification and why they haven't got the license it's just a little bit tricky there so i i agree with modeling 100 and i would like to hire somebody that already had the license because it makes sense if the person has the requirement the experience it should have the license as well thank you vivian so um i brought our previous agenda because i could have sworn we've this was a position that we previously discussed um and here in maryland i feel like it's deja vu so i'm looking at the previous posting that was presented to us and i'm seeing an education and experience section where i believe maryland wanted the word required as opposed to preferred and i see that it was completely taken out just because i see it completely removed so i feel like what marilyn is addressing once again if i'm wrong like i don't know if i'm wrong but i feel like what she's addressing is pretty much what we had mentioned in our last meeting i'm just confused so okay superintendent yeah so the contractor's license does say required uh but then it has after or the qualifications which is basically to give them time if the person's qualified and just needs time to take the test and get the license which usually the test is given every month they would have a short window in order to get that license so we i strongly believed that they have the qualifications and would be able to obtain that license the other way to resolve this i think you would like this but they can always they could always we could always use my license if we needed to pull a permit under my license i have the contractor's license for my own background experience it was that if it was a short-term thing that for a month or two when we needed to pull a permit for some purpose or some reason and the person didn't have his license yet or she didn't have their license yet we could utilize my license for any projects in the building as well which then i would be responsible to make sure it was done correctly you also pay for it okay i'm sorry vivian no i'm just noticing now with the whole education experience that was lumped into the qualifications now out of curiosity is the word at least which is maryland's favorite favorite word is that an issue in terms of the word at least or having it say minimum i'm not sure if our the person that was holding this position like what was what is actually required or what education he held that it would make it a requirement superintendent referring to the first bullet where it says must have at least five years experience in an educational or institution industrial environment change that from at least to a minimum of five years experience yeah we can i mean that's not a problem to change the terminology there change the term to a minimum of five years experience and we can make that change easily that's not a problem at all um anything anything further baby okay who made the motion of that right uh frank are you okay with vivian's corrections i'm sorry can you um tell me your corrections again it was just the under qualifications instead of at least you know five years are you all set with vivian thank you it's about having the qualification to obtain a license it should be a person that has a license so it should require a license okay marilyn you had your hand up for the same thing that i want contractor license or professional trade license required you you all right with them solo if the committee is uncomfortable with or have a qualification to obtain a license uh i will strike that in order to move this forward i know a lot of people also and frank excuse me one second and also john two to not just to strike it to that they need a license yeah that's what it says contract a license or professional trade license request sorry misunderstood i'm sorry frank i think people are looking to remove the word preferred it's yeah we won't put that in it's not in there we took it out it already says license a professional trade license required so to have the qualification to obtain or to have a qualification to attend the license that's what we want that removed because that means that somebody can be hired without having the license even though it says it's required but it is that sentence says or have the qualification to attain the license so we don't want a person to later have a license we want to be able to hire somebody that already have the license and it's there it says required so that part is good do you got it okay okay but i do know we got it i know a lot of people in that are directors of facilities that don't have it and have been doing a great job for over 15 to 20 years and have the required abilities to get it and have in its bigger school districts but i will concede to zoilers and marilyn's request to add that in okay are you all i'm sorry for you my question was is this a complicated license to obtain is it something lengthy um in terms of a lot of experience to obtain the license they don't have to go through some sort of protocol testing yeah just testing yeah they have to go through a written test in order to pass this it's a lengthy test requires a lot of knowledge and understanding and experience code in order to pass this test and get the license so yes it's not an easy license to get i don't know why i'm asking this but um had how do we maintain that sentence there obtaining obtaining it while they're on the job is that something that we would have been required to pay for or they would have paid it out of pocket they would they would be paid out of their own yeah they would be required to finance their own uh course if they had to take a course a prep course and then the test itself but someone that doesn't have experience and background uh in the uh in this area uh would not be able to pass the test it takes a lot of experience and knowledge and background in order to take this to take the test so qualifications you know looking at somebody's resume and looking at what they've done for the last 20 years i would be able to tell if they have the qualifications and the knowledge and experience in order to obtain that license but it still means they would have to study like any test they'd have to study and prepare for it and i would recommend anybody that's you know even been doing it for 30 years to do that before taking the test it's not that easy a test mrs fitzgerald yes i i'm kind of confused where vivian is reading from because under the new um thing that was in our packet i don't see are you reading from the last one can you tell me where you're reading about equivalency okay is that from last time or this time august 30th okay because i can't i don't see where you're telling saying that um that they can get it while they're on the job under qualifications right after the word required required it says or have the qualifications to obtain license so my question was if we were to maintain that sentence there would they have um would we be um obligated to pay for uh these courses and the license and certifications on behalf of uh the person that would take on this position or they would have to pay this out of pocket actually doesn't it doesn't say it it doesn't say it out of curiosity had we maintained that sentence there very easy to leave that do there if we were to leave them because the discussion is to remove it [Music] i have a different one so i'm not seeing anything i do not have what vivian august has no i don't have that let me see definition qualifications no i don't have it okay we have two different [Music] contract and things or professional trade license required or have the qualifications to obtain licenses that was changed it must not have got changed oh it was changed to what no no if that's what it is so i'm reading it off the here so there's two different things yeah i suggest we start with the pledge of the flag again okay uh all right now we do need to get this do we have right what everybody wants well there's two or three people who want one yes but i was reading from the screen oh okay so everyone has a package now maryland has both right i have both right in front of right correct so okay this is uh mrs fitzgerald yes um i still hold to what i said about the licensure i think we wouldn't hire an electrician who didn't have a license this person is overseeing everything from plumbing electrical and so on and while he doesn't need each of those licenses he needs the overriding one of the building contractors license and i feel that anybody even with 30 years experience needs to get that license if i first of all this is a maps of position with a very significant salary attached and i believe that i really don't care what other communities do i do care what we do and the standard that has been set and again by john by rob an expectation of excellence and certainly our present facilities director has delivered that and we'd be looking for the next person to keep us in that same level so i just feel this is one thing that is so important no matter how you know what the resume says someone comes in from the outside and they could say a million things we need to know and john needs to know that wow he has this certification he he or she has done this done this done this and if it's an in-house candidate all the better but they need that license in my opinion so frank we need to always care what all the communities do because it also plays in a hand in what we do and john is going to be interviewing the person so he's going to know what they've been are to have done and are capable of doing and if we if we're already removing the thing and we're adding that they need the license so but that also limits us from having a great candidate that can get the license within a short minute amount of time with that said no and and at the end of that day if it's a thing that we looking for they'd have to go get it i've had where their executive directors have come to me that this person hasn't been able to get the license within the time we've had to let them go so it's it's a point where we're already adding it so they're gonna get the license but we can't say forget about every other community we are of value to ourselves we're not a valley to ourselves because we serve four different communities um and john knows what he's gonna be looking for to replace and i don't think john is going to go from strollering steak to salisbury steak i mean as much as good as salsa berry steak is it's not going to top sirloin um with that i accept leo vivian's amendment zola's in in maryland's amendment okay uh sue are you all you also are hungry i hate to ask this question is everybody else all set yeah mr hayden i gotta say this we hire teachers we hire uh carpenters electricians you name it professional people from the trade excellent people from the trade and we give them three years to get their license we're talking about a couple months for somebody to obtain their license i'd hate to tie the superintendent's hands and have him pass up on a good candidate just because he does not at this time have a license i want the best candidate for the job i think the way it's written i like the way it's written i think as frank says the superintendent will be able to vet this out sorry it depends on which copy you're reading yeah vivian so i'm not opposed to um having this person obtain their license uh but at least make it clear as it's clear for teachers that it's within three years then what is the time frame can't wait three years oh no i know it's an example the same way that they have a threshold of when it's required for them then it should be mentioned here that way it's avoiding um it sounds like we're starting all over okay and vivian is uh solid and she wants it um as data day of higher in maryland you wanted it as a day of higher correct am i okay i got that ooh i caught catch on vivid [Music] that it's required um them to obtain it mrs fosho yes i know that there is somewhat of an urgency to do this however i also know because the superintendent has told us that mr charest has agreed to stay on until this person is hired and um i don't believe we are all of a sudden not going to have sidewalks shoveled and the ac stopped working um rob is sticking with us until that person is hired just like we need to fill the it position that position might not be filled for months this position might not be filled for months while we wait for a candidate that has their licensure and hopefully that's in the works so i you know if my vote doesn't hold so be it but i just feel that this is such an important part of what we do every person that walked in this building today without exception talked cleanliness the the way this building is kept and it's not an accident that that happened and it starts from the top with john superintendent yeah i think the motion is to post the position in terms of the job description i'm happy to put contractor license or professional trade license required and the story will move forward on that then we know everyone's comfortable getting a qualified person if for some reason someone if someone if tomorrow someone came and they were outstanding didn't have the license i would say okay rob's with us two months you got two months to get the license so we can delay the appointment until that person gets delayed if we found the right candidate we could do that and the superintendent can always come back to this committee and adjust this at a later time if he finds out a month from now three hopefully a month three weeks from now that it's he's getting no i mean contractor contractor's license is worth some money um you know if uh don't get any ideas john but um if they would uh you know if he finds out that he's not getting the candidates then we can always adjust it at that point you know what i'm saying so we're all set i think we've tied this out all those in favor anyone opposed okay all right uh future gender uh items uh mission policy update john uh m m cash strategies are we gonna take those at a different date september that's in september okay i don't have the date here i'm sorry okay there's no need for an executive session i understand john no just oh i just had up um just on the custodials we're gonna uh i have a meeting set for september i think 15th to meet with the custodians to start negotiating their contract i don't know uh usually it's a one meeting thing and it's done it's pretty easy it's usually basically salary and if they have any minor uh requests but usually it goes it's really pretty easy the one thing that i i am going to ask and and if anybody wants to be part of that negotiations that's fine but i one one of the things i'm looking for in this negotiations from that i would like to see happen is we have they have a position that beth evans had last year that was an uh non-rep position basically was rob's did clerical work but did several other things mostly oversaw inventory also oversaw purchasing also oversaw helping manage some of the [Music] heac systems so they did more other activities than they did clerical so i would like this position to move into the custodial's union and then we could have all those duties but slash custodial as well in order to fill in sometimes if we ever needed a custodian because sometimes when they're caught up with that doing peels and stuff they could chip in on a particular day if we have a shortage and help out with that so i'd like to put that position in there in their union so that's something i'd be asking for uh in order to give us more flexibility on who we hire and um and i think it would be beneficial to the school that in the next agenda is that what you're saying i would be asking them put that in the contract in their contract uh if the oh it's as far as to negotiate it yes negotiations that's the only other than that it's the only language i'd be looking for a change other than you know the finances already done really for the most part it's a position that exists now as a non-rep position i'd like yeah i'd like to move it into there i'd like to move it into there here one one particular position that's not in their union now i prefer to move it into their union to give us more flexibility and how we use a person that's uh giving the ability to allow them to do some custodial work and some other duties that might be beneficial if they were in that union anybody have a problem with the superintendent starting the negotiations off with that frank uh yeah we should have had that conversation in executive session because we were going to talk about strategies of what we would want in in a negotiation that's what we should add that conversation so yes uh mr that being said i'd like to be part of that negotiation committee okay we'll have mr hayden anybody else would like to join him no no that's not hand up right okay all right just want to be sure i just want to be just be sure that's all and it's the first time i see maryland staying down can't tell you okay um jill accepted mr who can i make a comment please for future okay i know he missed it i when you said new business you wouldn't buy it i didn't throw my bottle at you fast enough okay i'm sorry i didn't see it what do you think it's okay mr superintendent i'd just like to say i'm very happy with all the things that are going on in this building we have 17 or 18 different projects going at the same time we're spreading everybody too thin including yourself i would like the committee to think about holding off on any future projects including aviation and anything else that's coming down the pike until this building is put back together we've had two years worth of covert two years worth of our students that have unfinished lessons unfinished tasks competencies i think we need to slow down and address all our problems we have going right now i know the supply line is out of our control i know we've been working everybody to death and again i really like all the things that are happening i just want to get them complete okay so you want to put that in the next agenda please or you know even if we give it two weeks to give time to get things done no we have to put on here i'm going to move him to address it put it on the agenda to address it we'll adjust it to the next meeting okay consider it done okay uh vivian so how are we addressing this uh refraining from future projects yes yeah i don't okay i'm just gonna add a comment to that even though it's in the future agenda items um you had me there mr hatem in regards to potentially halting on future projects if it involved with renovating the school or any type of renovation within the school but the aviation program or any other project that deals with outside of the spectrum of the school i i don't see why we would need to halt on us moving forward in a future program um that's not um coming in between the the schedule of the teachers it's not invading the space of the students so um i would i'm open to discussion in terms of what types of project we're taught we're trying to halt and for how long um and this is the reason why we i believe we hire as many people in certain positions to assist and help in order for us to continue the work that we're doing okay yeah no i'm not going to discuss it any further this time we will put it on the next agenda and uh we'll beat it to death then okay like seems like everything that we do anything further i know what can i tell you and doing it well doing it well uh she i'll accept the motion to adjourn so move almost in favor anyone post that can i have the date of the next meeting please september 6 13 september 13th if you want to meet here with frank he'll be here on the 6th you

there are very few students that or parents that haven't verified their residency so our principals have notified parents who have students in those grade levels that in order to begin school on september 8th they must come up to the school office and verify their residency they have been making phone calls and hopefully we're pretty confident that by the time school starts we will have all of our residency checks for those three grades if that's the case then in the four we'll move on to three other grade levels and do the same thing that we did this past spring so if that's the case then i'm hoping that this coming school year we'll probably be able to do anywhere from six to nine more grade levels and try to finish everything up as quickly as possible but i do want to thank parents who have cooperated come up during the summer and so so far it's worked out very well i also want to mention that on our website or will be on our website and the parent portal there is a letter going out to parents about the new health standards uh as you know there has been some controversy about some of the topics that the state is mandating i do want to emphasize the fact that it's not a district decision it's a new jersey department of education decision as far as what the standards are we can decide how we teach it but the state determines what we have to teach so there is a letter going out to parents students in the elementary grades will be hand carrying the letter home students in the middle school in the high school will be posted to the website parents will have as part of that letter an opportunity to search uh sites namely cliffside parks curriculum and also some resource sites that parents can go to that will give them information about what the curriculum is going to be all about how we're going to be addressing it having said that there is if you look on the second side of the letter an opt-out form for parents so if there's a particular topic that parents do not want their child to be part of they can send the op out opt out form back to their school principal and they'll be opted out of that particular lesson they'll be given some other instructional opportunities during that time so this is all new to us as far as the new standards are concerned but i'm pretty confident that with our curriculum the way it is and some of the resources and the professional development for teachers i'm confident it'll work out but again if parents have questions they can contact my office or they can contact their principal's office to clarify any any questions that they may have but the letter will be going out next week it will be posted to our website uh probably tomorrow and also as part of the parent portal so when parents go into the paraportal and they log in the first thing they see is this letter so this way it's a way of getting as much information out as possible okay at that point i'll i'll stop if any board members have any questions i have a question about the parent portal posting if they do want to opt out and they're on their parent portal do they do it electronically or do they have to print it out and send it down good question i think they're going to have to download it yeah they're going to have to download the form which they can do on the website okay or they could get the form when their child brings it home and then they would have to actually send it into school and what would happen is the uh if the classroom teacher will collect it that that teacher will work with the principal to make sure that that student is is pulled out during that time thank you and as time goes on uh then we may make it available where either on the website or maybe on the portal it might be a pdf where you can actually enter the information and then it will be sent to the principals thank you okay uh in reference to the re-registration i know it's early in the game and uh have an assessment uh i know it's early but it has an assessment done with the grades that have completed so far that everybody that's re-registered in the grades that we're registering has verified that they live in kosovo but have we seen uh any problems well as far as as far as people moving we really don't know that sometimes till kids return now in september now some of these people that haven't re-registered yet right those may be people who have moved but usually people don't notify us that they move what will happen is when we start school next week there might be a child's name on the roster and if they're not there then the first thing the secretaries do is make calls to the home saying have you moved and so on but i would have to say right now based on the information that i received from our principals that the majority of parents have re-registered and have proved residency based on the criteria that we gave them okay okay and i'll and when we get into the second part of it um what i'll do then is i can share maybe more specific information with the board as far as have there been people that have come up and the information that they're providing wasn't sufficient so on and so forth so so we'll do that and i just want to uh congratulate the district again for the cusack because i'm not sure you mentioned it at this particular meeting but cliffside park was designated as high performing yes yes and i think that that's really waterborne everybody deserves congratulations right i agree because uh you know we are designated among the best and foreign yeah and that's this is the second time in a row we've gone through cusack that that's happened so yeah the staff like i said staff administration the supervisors uh all should be commended for their work in that okay so um i'll look at the consent agenda uh there are a number of items i'm gonna point out a lot of personnel changes but i'm on page let's skip it around here i'm sorry i'm on page two um i'm gonna skip the first resolution i'll come back to that because it's tied to another one but andrea carden who retired last december as a supervisor were appointing as an interim supervisor of instruction andrew will probably be working with us two days a week for a short period of time she's gonna help with the transition uh of a new supervisor of special ed that that we have in the district candace rowan uh andrea's gonna also help out with some of the observations and andrea's position was approved by the county superintendent and she will probably start with us september 12th to monday and work some mondays and wednesdays throughout the four next resolution gohan balaban is a new esl teacher that'll be starting with us on or around october 25th the reason for that is right now he's employed in paterson and he has resigned but as of right now they'll they're going to hold them to 60 days as per their contract uh alexander ebron is a new high school english teacher who will also be working in some of our special ed program he'll be uh we're pending his certification so he'll be starting as a permanent sub and the reason why we're waiting for the certification is he's certified in new york and it has to be transferred over to new jersey and that will take uh probably a couple of weeks uh ashley gonzalez who's been a part-time title one teacher with us is going to be a full-time teacher from september to december uh filling in for a maternity leave in school four once january comes and the teacher returns ashley gonzalez will go back to part-time title one so she's actually helping us out and we appreciate that carolina alejo uh will is appointed as a 12-month secretary assigned to the middle school carolyn was previously a teacher aide with us at school four uh flipping over to school page three the second resolution gabriel depena who works with us as a coach also with a permanent sub with us last night is filling in for a leave replacement at school six in the social studies department and gabriella is also very close to receiving her certification in social studies right now we're just appointing her as a permanent sub i'm going to skip right over to page four marianna elias who's a teacher aide but also a certified sub is going to be filling in at school three as the media specialist from september through december uh iman uh teacher rated school four is going to be filling in also as a permanent substitute in one of our resource room classes from september through december and again the reason for some of our substitutes serving as permanent subs is because it's been very very challenging to get teachers to fill those positions especially in the special education area extremely challenging uh and we it's not for a lack of effort on our part it's just been difficult and a lot of districts are experienced the same challenges we have been facing as far as hiring staff jason hiles who worked with us last year will be a permanent sub assigned to the high school jet meyer who worked with us last year as a permanent sub in our title one position uh jeremiah's also very close to reconciling her certification she's gonna work as a title one part-time teacher at school number three these are all temporary until the positions are filled um page five uh we haven't we haven't appointed all the spring coaches yet uh we will do that in our september meeting but we are temporarily appointing some of the head coaches so they can work with the program but before i we get to that third resolution down we're rescinding uh carly cerrone who worked with us for a number of years did a great job but she decided to resign as head girls basketball coach kathleen johnson uh has resigned this cross country middle school girls coach and brandy ludora has resigned as assistant basketball coach but we will we are appointing brandy as uh the head basketball coach for girls so if you look at the next resolution we are approving the following uh kids and this is good for the program so i appreciate that well aren't we just agreeing yes steve yes yes he says can you hear me it should be popping up on that screen i don't know why it went away it's okay we have four out of the five the brown county high school custodian katie underwood 12.25 per hour part-time no benefits effective september 1st 2022 this is a new position do you have a motion to accept the incentive item for high school custodian katie underwood to start tomorrow part-time i'll second any discussion welcome carol yes amy yes vicky yes stephanie yes yes next is uh recognition of visitors and comments from the audience uh this is your opportunity to comment or share information or anything not already on the agenda you know and with that nexus correct presentation all right are you saying or if i said or it's like okay um a little bit tonight uh briefly and then i gave each of you some forms to kind of follow along and i'll let you know get to those uh i'm gonna talk a little bit about stem education and a goal that we have um and really statewide is that all schools will be stem certified by 2025 okay and so i just want to you know talk about what the process looks like where we're at in the process and really i think i can speak for uh shane and kelly a little bit too and where they're at excuse me so anyhow uh andy i think you were part of the stem certification junior high so um i did not actually get participate in the very beginning stages of certification i came in in the middle of that so when i showed up we were and i'll kind of guide you through where i came in uh so i have a little bit of experience with this um and you know what and let's be honest it's gonna take some work it's gonna take some things it's gonna take some time uh it's gonna take some uh um some more teachers time to get this done but you know that's okay you know this is the best interest for our students at our school in our community um first foremost um i introduced uh the rubric to our uh to my team uh actually yesterday so we met in iot i told him that was coming last week said hey this is something that's going to be on the docket i'm just we're just going to start familiarizing ourselves with what we have and where we're at um sarah conker and i have a few conversations this past summer about what it's going to take uh to be stem certified some of the things that we have in place uh already and you know the good news is you know we're already doing a lot of things i'm going to give you some really brief examples of some of the things that we're doing so um to get started here says uh step number one the school leadership team conducts self-evaluation basically what we're doing is and that's kind of what we started doing uh yesterday is uh just looking at what we have like where we're starting from okay evaluation tool it's on a website called learning lab through the division of education state vision education basically what it is is you're gonna look at what you have and what you're doing and determine whether you're uh in progress you're fully invested or you're not ready yet okay so i'm gonna be honest it's very very very basic right now okay so just basically you're trying to decide what the attitude of the school is towards them okay um describing your step culture is the best way to do that so we're not actually into the rubric that you have a copy of yet we're just going through and just saying hey you know i think we're really good here we're good here we just need to do a little better necessary here but the domains are the same okay so we're just going to remember i think four domains four five domains but those are movies okay do you want to talk about what sten is okay step is so essentially what we're looking at stem is the best way like uh the acronym of it is but science technology engineering yeah and if we do steam with s-t-e-a-m and that has art right so and i remember with uh ryan i came on yes i don't know always but it's important to know that and to be honest with you when they come and do a walkthrough and a site visit they're going to ask the kids they're going to talk to you i'm going to get to that so but yeah so like i said the first thing is just kind of identifying what our culture is in our building and i think uh as you go through our school corporation in general and we have a really good steam sorry stem culture um but anyhow so the first thing to do is identify that culture okay and then we're gonna fill out the form we're gonna send okay and at the state level what we're going to do is we're going to look at our i guess our brief starter application and they're going to say all right you know you're ready okay you're ready to start looking at the application itself so what we're going to do is we're going to take that application you have in front of you okay it's going to look like this right here certification evaluation rubric like this and what you're going to do is go through we're going to look at the evidence that we have to prove that our cultures were at least perspective and they're going to rate us okay and the rating system is out of 75 points and the goal is to get 57 points or more okay so that's that's the goal um now like i said at the junior high level when we started stem certification i was not here for that initial evaluation when i came into play we are just a little task not much pass out we were a little past and like i said what we're going to do is we're going to go through this and you're going to start going and saying all right we're going to assign you one point because of what you're using for your your evidence is one this two is straightening the now going through this you know just with my team yesterday there's some things that we do really really well there are some things that we're not gonna have to do make a lot of changes too uh i'm a good example that would be for domain one common work time common wartime is provided with uh with your interdisciplinary teams okay we offer that now that's something we do we do plus we have cluster every week okay that's not going to be hard okay all right um our second domain curriculum assessments okay teachers use a variety of methods to demonstrate stem learning okay we'll do that anyhow we use a variety of assessments to do that that's not something we're going to have to change that's something to do and how that would be a three okay the next domain instruction student's instructional work groups two times four weeks students working groups folks we do that daily in our business okay so like i said these are all things that we're doing through niet a lot of it's gonna transition into being seven certified and finally the last domain partnerships now i will say this um when it comes to partnerships or schools we have tons of partners here we just do is finding the right partners that are going to help us through the step process matter of fact i want to see my first day at baron buren uh in the official principal pass i had a phone call from one of my parents who is a engineer of commons hey i want to come help out i know that we have a standard for coming how can i help obviously cummins is going to be somebody that we're going to want to partner with okay and i know there's a ton of themselves building those relationships building those partnerships with with not just you know cummins but you know ex junior high we had five people at 4c lhp columbus regional uh ukraine naval station we've had tons of partnerships and you know i would like to build something similar to that at the elementary level that might not be as robust but i would like to do something similar to getting those type of companies corporations involved one of my fondest memories actually of stem at the junior high or sorry stem certification the process we had students that want to cook and i don't know if you are aware of what they do and cook but they do everything by hand and so when you're placing your catheters you have rooms because you want the tour to cook they have rooms upon rooms and people just running catheters through these plastic tubes and i mean hundreds of people doing this and so their big problem that they had was that the a lot of their workers stayed perfectly fine because that's all i had all the way along every day and so the problem that our students were trying to help them solve through this partnership was how do we have these people continue to do their job but not use their hands like they're using them how do we save them from getting carbon film so our students came up with all these different ideas and and actually created uh prototypes of devices that they could use pursuits in their hands they're still looking at it as they do it but are saving their fares and they got to present to the president of cook and so not that that's not neat enough but some of the work was actually happening okay so there are patent sponsors these are eighth graders okay some of them seventh graders so just you know like i said some fantastic opportunities um through the partnerships that we've had now so once we do that and once we once we um are identified as a school that has at least 57 points um then we move on to the next part of the the application process and essentially what you're going to do is you're going to get a and so someone from the state level is going to come to come to the school and they're going to sit down with myself and in our team our stem team and they're going to start asking us questions they go into each classroom they say they did at junior high um they talk to the kids to make sure the kids are using stem verbage uh it's actually a very thorough uh investigation it comes down certified i mean it really was expensive i won't say spent all morning with us it wasn't just a quick visit hey how are you doing let's still visit a classroom and we're going to be on the way no they went to every classroom they talk to kids in the hallway passing period we're talking with kids so like i said it's it's it's not just a hey thanks for for doing this then at the end they give you some really really good feedback as to hey you want to hear some areas that we need to improve okay you're doing this you're rocking this area and then once you take that feedback and you fix anything that needs to fix then you step for uh stem certification um i remember i said i remember this very very well uh they came back uh they talked with mr darwin um and it went really really well i i mean we were really uh really rocking it to be honest with you there was a whole lot of that we had to change um and then they simply submitted our application for step certification and uh it's my thing okay there are quite a few things that we have to do um basically you submit your school information uh but most importantly you're looking at your domains okay you have to submit what your evidence is and uh to be honest with you um you just want to be as detailed as possible they give you an opportunity so if you turn something in that's not really what you're wanting or wanting a little bit more to make changes to certification so and that's pretty much the the process for doing this now like i said we're at the beginning of this and you know i'm actually really excited about it because i do know that at iat what we've been doing especially with the rubric it carries over and so you don't see you know at least on my stack oh my gosh we're gonna do this it's more of that's what we're gonna do okay so just like i said a few tweets here and there so you know i'm really excited about it i said it's a part of uh something that i've done before so and it looks kind of daunting when you look at it on paper but it's definitely something that i think has a lot of value especially with the way the world is moving so um the way i look at it we're giving our students a leg up on what the world is asking for this is going to ask of them sorry so um are there any questions i know it's a lot in a little bit of time but you know feel free to yeah so when you think you will could sleep this process like with that equation okay so i said the first stage is seeing where we're at um if when talking with sarah like i said this was this past summer this this year we're going to put it all together and hopefully when the next so i think this coming school year piecing all this together getting everything lined up ready to go and this coming school year application and go from there yeah it is 22 23 school 23 that's what that's yeah so the goal for the district is to have all three elementary stem certified by 2025.

charlene right now is working in asbury park she'll be submitting her resignation tomorrow after we appoint her and hopefully uh if they don't hold it to her 60 days so she'll be coming to us sooner and as you know i did email the board at resol an email this week with her resume and i think we're very fortunate to find someone who has the experience she has and i'm very confident that she'll work out in that position it will work out uh top of page a yes christine scrima who's been a special ed teacher has resigned to take a position in another district as has chris ventura who's been a social studies teacher resigned to take a position in another district cynthia mourinho who's been a secretary with us has resigned to take a position elsewhere kelly lisa who's been a secretary with us who's has resigned to take a position elsewhere uh melanie brooks who's been a high school esl teacher has resigned to take a position elsewhere and shantae glover who's been a speech teacher with us speech pathologist has resigned to take a position elsewhere i believe all of those positions that i just read to you have been filled and those people will start those new people will start september first if i skip over to page nine uh as per contract with the cpa uh anybody any uh a staff member can submit prior to august 31st a change in their classification so this is based on graduate classes that they put in for that i approved and that they've successfully completed so they're moving from one salary class classification to another and that's on page nine and it continues on page ten and eleven also on page eleven uh you'll see we have a listing of staff members and there's the south either all of their salary or part of their salary that's been appropriated to title one or title two funds and basically what that means is that the local funds are not paying those salaries those salaries are coming out of federal funds that we receive referred to as nclb funding which was broken down into title 1 title ii and also pre-k salaries at the bottom of page 11 all of that all of the salaries or a good portion of those salaries are paid by uh pre-k funding that we receive so that's a savings for the district as far as our local budget is concerned and it's well spent uh can i continue the type of page of 12 is also some changing in the salaries and then on pages 12 13 we're appointing lunch aids in the district based on uh minimum minimum hourly wage that the governor has set and we are also approving aids on page and 14.

yes um so that's the goal and that's the goal of each of the elementaries that is attached to that three to five year objective being sent certified by 2025 that is um also connected to our student outcome are there any other questions it's it's really a fun process to be honest with you and you know it it just when especially when you see what the students are doing and you see some of the products that come out of this it's really really awesome to watch you know like i said it's going to look a little different obviously than what they did at the junior high level but some of the things that the students got to do and i get an example i'm talking about um you know we had some students that you know just difficult in the classroom you know every every school's got them but when we introduce these stem projects they have to pick something that they love to do among students you know helping work trying to to figure out how to add sound to a motor okay so making a motor louder so i remember a particular student on the top left like i'm in and the problem that we have i never thought this would be a problem but cars are just too buying today yes they are so purchasing what they call buyer satisfaction it's like way low okay so the students had to come up the way to make the car sound louder to make the road sound louder in the car it's just what we're used to you know what we grew up with well now you have these what we call smart part which occurs they're not those are people eyes so um that was one of the problems that they had so the student was all over the yeah and some of the other students in the past um actually found other things for example in the kitchen you know how do we make a stove louder so that way when you walk away you watch so any other questions are we intending to be doing the a as art as part of our stem i know that's not part of the doe part of this but i know that it's something that we've talked about as an arts community you know i think that i look at okay so i look at stem holistically mobility so it's not just going to be one group of students so we're gonna find a way to make every class testicle that's my so yeah yes he says really fun process this i invite all of you out especially when you start going with this um please come to us and uh come out visit anytime you want but especially when you get to office i have a ball watching kids do it and i know that when damn it dawn sorry that's all right oh i had the d you had the d and the end just had a little extra second all right mine's not gonna be as fun as maybe part of the cloud or anything and i don't have money so uh so what i've got tonight is i've got the presentation up on the screen there were copies that were on the back table if anybody needed one to grab and kind of follow along so what i'm going to talk about is our budget so our finances every year we have to uh submit items to the state of indiana the name of the group is the dlgf department of local government finance they deal with every type of entity all the way from a county city school town townships all the way down to solid waste they deal with any entity that charges property taxes and uses property tax or any other government funding so what we're going to do is we're going to talk about what we're looking at for next year right now is the time that we start gearing up and getting all of these things scheduled up for the next year so we have i've got three babies up on here and that cup right down the middle so tonight we're gonna do our budget workshop basic overview i'm gonna feed a lot of information out this is basically when i'm just going to give you all of the information this is uh just informational for the board for the public the next time that we will have a meeting on this will be on october 5th it's on the united report meeting we'll have a public hearing at that point is when the public can come in and ask any questions that they would like um about that so that is exactly what the public hearing is for and then on october 20th that is the night that the u.s board will adopt our budget with all of our figures for the next year after that i will submit it to the stage to the dog and they will go through their processes of finalizing the information and we will receive it back around january so we have five funds that we deal with that have money going into that our first one is our education we've talked a lot about that one coming up recently because that is the money that receives state dollars those dollars are figured based on how many students we have from kindergarten to 12th grade that does not include our pre-k that does not include our adult ed kindergarten through 12th grade debt service this is the fund where we only charge the amount of money that it takes to number one pay our debt services so all of our our bonds anything where we've taken out debt this is where we gather the money to pay those debts and uh it's mandatory for the taxpayers to do that the operating referendum fund this is what we've been talking about a lot lately so we have a referendum fund that we're going to have on the ballot this fall that we're going to ask for an increase increase from 8 cents to 12 cents this money will go specifically in this fund and the reason it's called operating referendum you can only use it for salaries and benefits that's exactly what the money goes into that fund and it's spent out of that fund for dollars and benefits for um for employees or school the next one is operations it's kind of like how its title is the operation the day to day there's a lot of stuff that gets paid out of it we can't just pay people to come we've got to pay for the lights and the air and the and the cleaning and all of that stuff so all that fun stuff is coming out and then we have our rainy day fund it is specifically just kind of what it says rainy day so we have to keep money back for the just in case this is where we store those moneys okay yes can i clarify one thing absolutely the operating referendum fund um is whatever the proposed spending plan is so our current proposed spending plan is the one penny for the career resource center the one penny for the early childhood the one penny for the operations and then the nine pennies for wages and benefits for staff so i just want to make sure that that was clear and all 12 wasn't going to wake us up i appreciate that thank you all right average daily membership this is what we call our adm these are the numbers of how many students kindergarten through 12th way grade are enrolled and attend school here at brown county so i've got just just some comparison numbers from the 0.506 school year the number of belly buttons that we had was 2421. this last school year 2021 2022 we had 1601.
