23 evan davis good for 30 yards and that's not what you wanted and that's why he's a fan you need to be into this game and making things tough and that was just a throw down there that they were hoping for the best yeah wetzel was there he's in the right spot davis just went up and made a great catch there gonna be a round out to the right side it's gonna be another deep ball and it's gonna be overthrown and bring up a second and ten [Applause] minute 35 here second and ten and that was just vaguely one-on-one coverage with mitchell i believe is number 11. nope that's oster hockey the running back who goes down for a 30-yard route second 10 ball at the eagles 47 yard line 135 remaining in the route 3 rivalry [Music] trips to the right side now tight end to the right they're going to look to the left side now they're going to try to come back across the eagles are going to force them to roll out and throw and it will be caught good for 11 yards number 11 with the catch kobe osterhagi good little drive here by waterloo to put up a little fight trying to get some points on the board here i'll definitely have to go for an onside kick if they score since they are out of timeouts and there's only by the time they score it'll probably be almost about a minute left on the clock so first down and 10 here for the bulldog gonna be another rollout to the right side this time mortals really trying to stretch the field he goes across the field it's vaguely on the defense great job falls incomplete good job mason getting himself in good position he put himself in a spot there where the wide receiver had to go through him to get that ball [Applause] great job just to be in the right spot as we've said almost all night with all these guys on defense still with zero points for waterloo bulldogs so columbia defense came getting ready to play tonight unlike last week where uh they mosquito kind of got to do anything they wanted [Music] second and ten now from the 41 yard no i'm sorry the 36 yard line three down linemen for the eagles [Music] they rolled everybody out and they threw underneath the davis it's going to be one missed tackle and finally brought down by number 33 landon brucker vagley had a chance of making the tackle in whiffed and brucker was able to come up and make the tackle [Applause] and it's going to be a spike now but a flag on the play illegal procedure [Applause] they must not have had everybody set when they got up to line of scrimmage and the quarterback tried to spike it there as quick as he could get everybody up but everybody was not set yet so that's a loss on the play so a loss of five now hey look over here with that illegal procedure eagle's still going to three down alignment now a little bit more movement going on as the eagles defense is having to shift around with the bulldog offense big play pick rolling out to the left side is morrow he's going to get grabbed in the back field by point six great play number two carter hicks that's huge there clock's gonna tick that's one thing as waterly you can't do is take a sack yeah big cutter hicks got you in the grips and you weren't getting out 40 seconds down the manny magara group scoreboard gonna be another pass down the middle of the field it's going to be intercepted by the eagles number 12 dominic bailey comes up with the big int and that's going to do it [Applause] yep i knew that was coming vaguely got that interception through the ball straight up in the air i mean it'll be half the distance to the goal i believe but you can still take a knee and that should do it he's he he had to do that i feel like he's he's been grinding all night both sides of the ball got two picks ran for probably 150 yards with i'd say 25 touches and i think he's gonna be my favorite game he's gonna have he's gotta be my player i'll agree with you there too offensive line though they gotta get a shout out yeah for real he played really well tonight giving him a lot of holes to work with and just finding him openings that don bailey can pretty much bounce out at any time so great job by don bailey and the whole offense tonight and we say carter hicks name a lot on the lead blocking tonight zach wetzel as always on the outside stock blocking um so offensive defense great overall win tonight and um that goose egg looks pretty good instead of that 40 what six points that got put on us last week so 49 points so great job by both sides of the ball tonight so that's going to do it with that knee the final 20 seconds are going to roll off and a great game by the eagles in this round three rivalry as the eagles are going to leave victorious nine to nothing in a great game all around and uh what we expected out of this game when they're out three rivalry yeah that was that was definitely a grinder there and props to waterloo for giving us a little push there at the end uh making a couple i'd say four or five passes their completions to get down the field and kind of get us on our heels a little bit but number 12 like we uh sit a lot tonight came up with a big play there so we're gonna head to a break as we watch the final handshakes taking place right now we're gonna head to a break and we will be back to break down the game in the post game show after this [Music] ah [Music] [Applause] all right [Music] at midfield right now [Music] the route 3 rivalry trophy is going to stay in colombia as eagles leave it victorious and jared what a game we had here tonight what we expected and uh just a great game by the eagles offensively and defensively yeah you know starting off whenever they uh started off with the ball in waterloo that first play kind of threw us off guard because like oh maybe they're going to come out slinging around a little bit in first play they gained about 20 yards and 23 was really really impressive tonight on the offensive side of the ball really good really good rusher and uh i think we shut them down pretty nice if uh that still says zero up on the scoreboard so i'll take that any any day great job on military appreciation night by the eagles like we said they got the trophy from a first class from the army you was donate or presenting the trophy and they got everyone going out joining around right now so you get that military appreciation feel from start to finish and it was a great job all the way around and a great game so whenever you come out we talk players of the game all the time when we talk vaguely tonight um i'm going to go offensive line i'm just going to give it to all of them last week was luke zach wetzel and this week i'm going to go offensive line you're saying you're going dom vaguely and i think anybody on that front and in the backfield could have it tonight yeah uh offensive line like i said earlier they just gave him room to work and having a quarterback that's as versatile as he is and he can do anything with his legs and he can throw it as well so it's nice to have o-line tonight to see them give him uh some options and give him a lot of space to work and that's really all you can ask for as a quarterback just keep keep me safe and give me some room to run and i'm gonna make some yardage out of it somebody we didn't say a lot of last week number two carter hicks the senior we talked after the game last week when we were on the ride home and we said you know it's kind of disappointing we didn't get to say his name he didn't get too much done this week and then this week lead back carter hicks lead back carter hicks catches a great fake punt and then that sack at the end at the end so great job by carter hicks he could even go up there as my surprising and my my player that i liked watching the most tonight yeah overall i mean we only had uh two cramps tonight so that's that's a good thing uh but now overall uh it was a great game to watch and pretty fun game to watch i mean it kept you on your toes the whole game you didn't know what was gonna what was gonna happen in the end but um great job by uh columbia and waterloo tonight and columbia is victorious columbia improves to one and one we have one more non-conference game that will be against the explorers of alton marquette next week that will be at alton marquette we will not have a broadcast just with never knowing what to expect when we go from place to place that is why on road games it will be audio only you will still be listening on kchs but um some of these press boxes and some of these towns we go to you never know if you're gonna have enough internet for a for a video broadcast um we go back heck prairie central back in the day we were there and we got to the last drive of the game and all of a sudden we lost internet and it's when we were outside too yeah it replayed from the start and jared was typing play-by-play what was going on so that is why we're not doing video on the road games we will bring you video from all home games though so once again thank you all of our great sponsors couldn't do it without you thank you tonight especially sons of the legion here in town giving dinner donating dinner for the team they had pulled chicken and they were selling brats and everything down there as well so and dusty ralph for that great halftime and third quarter uh announcing he was doing for us and he did a great job the rally tiles coming from freshly print creations good job by getting all those sales getting them all distributed make sure you bring those out week in and week out and keep them waving once again come back on the coach's corner presented by holton meets thursday nights on spotify and finally we'll see you in two weeks now for the aces wild pre-game show uh at 6 30 pm we will have it so that is it for this week two rivalry week route three rivalry whatever you want to call it columbia leaves victorious for mr nickerson for our high school students that helped video tonight jared germain and alex schlemmer signing off we'll see you in two weeks go eagles baby [Music] you

kind of interesting with this because back in our buildings we do have people gather in a room just like this watching a video and wondering what the heck is going on josh it's pretty okay i'm going to take that meaning we are off and running so good morning again everybody um hopefully you have that restful and relaxing weekend hello to everybody out in the buildings as we get ready for this third pd day for our school corporation just a reminder about these professional development days we put in the waiver with the state over a year ago actually the last summer of 2021 to see if they would allow us to use time a little bit differently and measure our school year in minutes instead of days they granted that waiver that's why last year's second semester we went ahead and started off with a couple of professional development days we had one in february another one in april and here we go this year we had to find that way over once again and we were granted that waiver once again so we have four pd days this year this one just following uh the monday of labor day we'll have one following the week of thanksgiving we have another lane in february another one in april uh for second semester so looking forward to using those days hopefully you find those valuable as we look at just trying to get our staff to the same place a similar place to move our vision our strategic plan forward is really difficult with the jobs that we have because when you report to work it's a very specific thing to do for us and as we try to do that every day we just don't have much time to get together talk learn and get better at our craft and taking care of our kids so hopefully a day like this we have the entire day uh parents have got to sacrifice some things a little bit at home because they're trying to find what to do with their kids at home today or take care of whatever that looks like we found a way to have them at home us here and hopefully have some valuable professional development for you so i'm going to jump right in talking about a couple of things so first of all if you are able to get to our website wondering what all is going on within the school corporation uh there is a link to this and takes you to a website that is um available to our staff just to look through see the various things that are happening today and various opportunities that might be there this is the schedule for the day so as we look at it it is pretty open in the sense that we're starting off with this little welcome to begin the day rick weinheimer will follow with the keynote i think most of you here rick back in april yes hands we had a chance to be here here rick awesome he will be here again today to get a little bit different spill on things i will take a quick break and then we're back to departments and buildings and and just a variety of things so for example an elementary school have their staff together talking about the building plan that ties back to our strategic plan various departments food service transportation whatever will have some things going on throughout the course of the day and on that note here's just a sample list of things going on around our school corporation today besides this activity and going back to the buildings and having those building meetings so just a long list we have um tech titans my name is by that i have nothing to do with that because i am not a tech titan but it's in our building and so we have a space reserve for them we have a new learning management system they're working on the math resource adoption for both elementary and secondary we have cpi training which is with our special education department 504 coordinators book buddies speech etc all those things happen at different times so if you're watching and you see your category or or job placement up there those are some of the times that a lot of people are taking off and doing variety things throughout the course of this day but before i turn things over to rick i do want to spend time a few minutes just talking about our strategic plan i introduced this back in february we'll just put it back in front of you again because everything we try to do as an organization is tied to this strategic plan so we reached out to our community we had over 1900 uh responses to this feedback survey that we gave out we met with 19 different focus groups to try to get information from them about what we should be about as a school corporation and from that information we've put this together and so you see that our core beliefs we all can rise with of high expectations we need to believe that that every child can rise to the challenge of high expectations but also everybody we work with can do the same learning is the most effective way of choice flexibility and see relevance we thrive in our physical social and psychological needs are met so think about that for a second in terms of trying to be the best you can be trying to be the best our kids can be helping them be the best they can be how can we can how can we do that if some of those basic needs are not that physical social and psychological i'll just throw up one thing here it's one of the reasons i know drivers you're going to probably cringe at this i hate to call off school because so many of our kids need to be here we obviously have to be very careful when the roads get bad and we can't drive and we can't drive we have to stay home if we can get our kids to school they are better off in many cases being with us getting fed we offer three meals a day we have we have breakfast lunch and if kids are staying with us after school they're getting a snack or something again after the day they're getting support we're able to put our eyes on and see them uh talk to them learn about and know how things are going when i think back to code and that time that we didn't have kids in our building a lot of stuff was going on we just didn't have any opportunity to see them lay our eyes on them again and help them out and help meet these needs that are so important for them to move on and be successful our community and school district are stronger we partner with one another those partnerships are just so critical we are lucky in this community to have so many great partners we flourish because of the diversity and variability in our community and our democracy and democratic institutions are strengthened by civic minded citizens we need to develop that have the students become maybe more civic minded as we work our vision bcsc is a choice to learn work and play we want people to look at our school corporation as not this place they have to go when i was growing up as a kid the public schools over the door that's just where my parents stood that's the school is available the doors are open go we want bcsc to be the choice regardless if that's the case or not there are a lot of other options for parents to send their kids for kids that choose to go to school they can take an online option that doesn't want us we have one now there are hundreds of online options available in the state of indiana there are private schools available for kids they're charter schools available for our kids there are public schools available to them outside our district that they know to without cost we want to be the choice for our kids and the parents to come here to to go to school here and then hopefully work and play here as well our mission we develop expert learners by partnering with our community to invest in people so just a quick slide there it summarizes what we believe we are all about as a school corporation and growing and developing our kids and their reminder in terms of the three focus areas that we have as a school corporation to try to accomplish those things excellence and high expectations a healthy safe and welcoming environment and then pathways to success we are fortunate as these school corporations have many different pathways available to our kids i mentioned the virtual one how many people do we have a virtual pathway that our kids can participate in and we have a few hundred kids in that that are only in a virtual school now they do come into that building we have a building where they come into that building with teachers and so forth but they are taking their schooling in a virtual way uh we have a spanish immersion pathway beginning in pre-k so we have four-year-olds spending about 80 of their days speaking learning spanish and then going through our right now in fourth grade to click to creek elementary school just a lot of different options we make available to our kids with excellence in high expectations they qualify for that bcsc prepares expert learners in an equitable system of high quality curriculum resources and educators that equitable system means we're trying to make sure that every person has the opportunity to access the programs he offers the opportunity that we have the school corporation the strategic objectives titled that students will have equitable access to learn bureau administration success and staff will be able to remove barriers and provide options for student learning through udl in terms of programs and methods already in place that we're working on to try to accomplish those two things we are working to improve equity and academic achievement making sure that across the board kids have access they're performing well we're trying to increase our capacity through our udl framework and we're implementing a systemic vehicle celebrations of student success i don't think we can celebrate kids often enough you look at the newspapers all the time there are opportunities for kids to sit down and sign that they're going off to school to play baseball a basketball or something like that and it's a celebration that's really cool what about kids that are going into other crafts you just got a welding certificate out in the world of work and make a few thousand dollars quite a few thousand dollars right after graduation because they just achieved that welding certificate maybe we need to have a signing ceremony for that student too in terms of attracting retaining high quality staff that's the second part of high expectations we have to have high quality staff and our positions again to take care of our students this is an example of the high quality staff we put together and we know there are so many pieces to that what will attract you to come here first and work for us and then what will convince you to stay so recruit and retain are two very important pieces for that and so students and community members will view your career as attainable and fulfilling staff will feel a sense of belonging among their colleagues they'll be engaged and have a sense of self-efficacy in their work in terms of what we're trying to do to figure that out and make sure it's working we're implementing an educator development and recruitment program right now we're paying people to go to school and become teachers who come back to work for us we're conducting annual research based employee engagement survey i think all of you had a chance to to fill that out before we did it once a year through copen twice last year we'll do it twice again this year and that time frame is coming up so you will have again an opportunity to provide us feedback what we're doing right hopefully a few things and what we're not doing so right and give us that feedback so we can continue to learn and grow as an and then we organization celebrations for students we also have to implement systemic celebrations of staff success and i've seen some examples of that from a certified and classified standpoint i know where we have some support staff awards and recognitions uh employees of other things going on as well as teachers of the year that we started put together and working with now in terms of second focus area healthy safe and welcoming environments it is one thing to talk about high expectations wanting everybody to achieve at their highest level and going back to how can we begin to do that if we don't provide a healthy safe and welcoming environment we don't meet the needs of our our people our staffers our kids when they come through our door and work or learn with us if we can't beat those needs we can't have anybody be high expectations so we're looking to provide that those environments in which every learner has positive relationships and access to resources needed to thrive positive relationships are key how do any of us go through the day go through a week without having some form of a positive relationship we don't we're struggling that the positive relationship whether it's with a spouse significant other are our kids the people that you work with the students you have in front of you those don't exist it's really hard again to be as successful as we want you to be from the meeting those needs the different strategic objectives that we're looking at are students and staff who have ethical access to necessary resources so we have resources out there we're making them available to you whatever that need might be is it equitable meaning everybody has similar access and opportunity to access those resources staffing you confident in their understanding of equity cultural responsiveness and sustainability i'm not going to get into a definition right now but the reason that's in there about confidence or understanding of that there is a heck of a debate that ranges on about equity versus equality equity versus equality and maybe you're involved in that debate yourself we have settled the word equity because we're looking at everyone having access to opportunity regardless of the circumstances they've done themselves how can we help renew barriers to make sure that access is truly there stat student staff of knowledge mindset and skills needed to foster trusting relationships going back to the need for positive relationships programs and methods we're going to increase staff capacity for implement pbis increase our capacity to provide comprehensive social emotional and counseling services across the board students and staff and develop a staff capacity to incorporate cultural responsiveness and cultural sustainability welcoming safe and inclusive facilities we're doing a lot of work on our facilities we've done a lot of things with the various equipment that we've had um but we'll work and learn in those kinds of environments student learning spaces reflect the diverse book for views of the community and community members will have access to our facilities as resources we would love to see our schools that are taxpayer funded become centers for the neighborhoods in which they serve that they are used more than just the hours they're already open those are expensive buildings a lot of taxpayer dollars our taxpayers dollars go into those and they're open whatever those number of hours are 24 hours a day how can we continue to expand access because that helps with that those provision net prevention resources um and then uh peter was one of that's the last one talking about programs about this implementing student health clinics that's a way to make sure that our our schools are open maybe a little bit more and provide health services to people those communities and upgrade our elementary schools right now an example of that is parkside elementary school going through a multi-million dollar renovation of that school to make sure that it is up to speed with meeting the needs of its learners and then we will take the learning from that and put it out for all the elementary schools in our district over the next several years the last one pathways to success we do again believe it we're very important to have a lot of athletes available to our kids we want to make sure those pathways are accessible so if we think about the pathways that exist for our kids do all students have ethical access to them can i get into that program can you give me that program can you give me that pathway what is the access truth that's available to it and so as we work on that we need to evaluate whether or not we have equal access and we want to make sure our students families and community understand the pathways that exist for us so i mentioned making sure we have a system to evaluate the existing pathways we have to develop that system we have that in place we'll be working on evaluating each pathway we have to make sure it's truly ethical and accessible and we're looking at developing a marketing campaign between four members of our pathways an example that hardening campaign with what we're doing at parkside right now we've put together a marketing campaign so the entire community knows exactly how we're spending the taxpayer dollars they've provided us to fulfill that motivation lastly the using partnerships to establish additional pathways we need to learn from our community what pathways are still needed so working with the community understand as we work with our kids we develop them for the world of work in this community what are those things that they're still looking for and needing and we would have to engage the community and identify those additional needs the last slide in the north substitution plan so i'm very quick the best my fans are rick there's a lot more entertaining than i am um but in regards to our strategic plan importantly just put it in front of you because it is so important to us continue to grow and move forward together we launched the tagway tag line that was established for um together we wanted to see that a lot in terms of social media hashtag together we learned we do believe that working together helping each other we're going to be a lot better in serving the needs of our kids so without further ado rick disappear like a long time ago so i'm really hoping to steal this building somewhere rick weinheimer has been a long time educator for ucsc a wonderful teacher and coach uh state champions across country coaches boys and girls had a chance to speak to us back in april and it was it was such a great presentation it was so engaging that we want to bring it back to the entire school corporation because what we're looking to do is have people that get engaged everybody we have 2 000 staff members and we all come in and do different jobs every day and so what might be interesting to me may or may not be interesting to somebody else we think rick can serve that need for us and provide us something and talk about your why what is it that that allows you to get up in the morning and start the day in a good way and get out here and do the things the best way possible what is your why we're going to jump into that rick weinheimer now please fellow plus good morning i think i think we're still sorting some things out um but i brought a snack so i'm good and if it goes 15 minutes i don't know how many are in one of these boxes but i suppose we can start passing it up and down or i could just throw them like convey does anybody uh look at this box and think of the movie theater okay that's how i am i love dots and and we went to movies i was little and you could get one box you look at that big glass container they've got all those candies there i always picked up but i've only seen them in movie theaters and now there's amazon and so everything can happen as we as we hope thank you oh good morning and i'm thankful that i love docs because what an incredible questions it is look at the title we're talking about dots but i want to start with this slide and those of you that were here with me in april you already know this but i'm going to say it again because we've got people all over watching this but i'm going to use the word educator often in this presentation and my definition of educator is every single person in this room and every single person that's watching this streaming this some way every person hired by bcsc is an educator it's all about how all these different pieces work together to educate kids and so those of you that are here in april heard me say that i mean that again i'm reminding you of that those of you that are watching at home on like netflix or hulu or whatever we're on now or mount healthy hbo or taylorsville tv or whatever however they access that just want to remind you that every single person that we're talking to and listening and sorting things out with today are educators and so let's move on with that and and back to the fact that i love dots but there are two at least two things that i love more than that and that's my granddaughters grace and cecilia and the other day we were at their house their home and uh one of them said to me hey pop let's play twister and i thought you know it might be as hard as it is to believe it might be a few years since i played a really competitive game of twister but i thought okay i got this i still got the moves i can make this happen i'm good with this this is going to happen and so i said absolutely i can play let's go and my wife amy was on the couch and i could hear her eye roll behind me but no i thought we can do this because what's it take playing twister just takes a little patience and a little flexibility and i have both those things or did when i made this decision and so that's how we started out and you know i got right foot red and left foot green and cece's got her set and grace has her hands down and notice that everybody's smiling because that's how twister is it just makes everybody happy all the time and then as we got started and got going and got playing i was thinking a lot about this presentation coming up and i thought you know for an educator all day every day is a game of twister and i hope your your brain's already processing that about what you do when you come to be an educator in bcsc all day every day is like a game of twister and i thought well isn't that nice that's i'm able to send you the message that your job is simple and easy all day every day and then we got we started spinning i'd kind of forgotten this existed we started spinning this contraption and it took those happy faces and kind of totally changed what the whole thing was like as we went and i started thinking about how important it is that we recognize that we connect the dots every day and by that i mean okay where do these dots of our work come from well to be kind to us some committees of politicians got together and put together and told us what all the dots are and where they are and told us to connect them and told us it would be simple and easy and so our lives really are about every day working with every single kid and helping to connect those dots while at the same time of course we're connecting the dots of our own lives and so our life is about connecting the dots and it's playing twister and it's happy and simple and i have a plan and every day i've got a plan so it's going to work out but unfortunately as we get on the on the board the plan gets complicated by this spinner thing and this spitter says left foot right foot left hand right hand but i kind of put together a list of the things that really pop up on our spinners every day so if one of these sounds familiar to you go ahead and raise your hand or wave at me or something like that as we go i will not call on you i'll just they'll just be goodly connected but this is what the spinner of twister does for educators you spin and it doesn't land a hand or a foot it says you're due at the car line at the exact same time as your case conference and all of a sudden you're a little more twisted than you were before and it spins again and it says when you just finish replying to a parent email that same parent sends a whole longer email and you spin again and it says your student leslie vomits in the middle of your classroom and you spin again and it says your student andy walks in it and you spin again and the copier jams and eats your original copy and you spin again and it says your student katie has a tantrum in the lunch line because her friend lori got one extra tater tot and all of a sudden which seemed simple and exact and direct all of a sudden we're bent and we're twisted and we're challenged and the feet made sense but now your hand is here this hand is here this one's terribly moving and that's what the game of twister is like for an educator it starts out simple and easy but before you know it it changes before you know it's more pushing and chopping and bumping involved in this whole game than he originally planned because when you spin again it says you bring soup for lunch but a fork instead of a spoon and you spin again and it says your student rick opens a bag of peanuts and the entire school goes on allergy alert and you spin again and it says oh today leslie vomits in the lunch line and you spin again and it says your elbow bumps your special grande latte frappuccino and it spills on rachel who's sitting in the front row and you spin again if you're a high school teacher and you realize that in this last class period seven students phones have rung during class and you spend one more time and your student kelly eats an eraser and that's what twister really looks like and now all of a sudden your arm is bent at an unattractive angle and your legs are crossed over and you're trying to hunch your back and what started out as a simple cane has kind of twisted and shaped and shaken us out of our comfort zone and and there we are what was a simple game becomes a competitively spirited king thank you for crazy you happened to fall on the couch after i shoved her but it spins again it spins one last time and you've got all these things and there's a little wesley again who vomited the bus on the way home and then your real life intrudes when your veterinarian calls and said your cat needs braces and then this is the day to mow the lawn and they happen to be mowing the path that's right outside your classroom window and it's nap time either for the students or for the teacher or both and it spins again and you realize man i'm really hungry but then you realize your lunch doesn't start to 1 45 and it spins again especially for the elementary people and it's halloween or worse is the day after halloween it spins again when the main office calls and this is your daily phone call you forgot to take attendance and it spins again when you have the perfect classroom lesson going everything's clicking and then fire drill and then of course it clicks on this last one when at that moment your supervisor comes in to do your evaluation and so that's what's happened to us and we think of you know we're ready to play twister we had planned any it's like what has happened to that and then all of a sudden we have to have plan b and plan c and plan d and that's just the way the life of the educator goes we start out with a plan twister starts out really simple we had the smiles and it's like okay how has it become that what has happened to make that turn out that way and so i thought a lot about that during this during this game of twister that happened and as you can see pop one i invoked the pop rule and it became very physical and so i had a chance to win that but i appreciate all that you go through on a daily basis we almost always start out with a plan and then things happen and things happen and things happen that really change that so all of a sudden we're twisted in what we are planned and had to do as we go so i made this slide being an educator is not easy and i want to say clearly i've made a lot of presentations at a lot of slides i think this is the most obvious thing i've ever put on a slide i hope you know there was no reason to put that there we all know that being an educator is not easy i just wanted to be sure to say it out loud that we acknowledged that sometimes i had a little fear as dr roberts invited me to to do this that people listening were going to think i had some secret ways this job would be as hard as it is and this slide is for me to let you know that i don't but i want to talk about this difficult thing that we do and why we continue to do it in the face of being difficult i remember many times when i was a young teacher and i'd had a student one year that i was really struggling with or a parent one year i was really struggling with and i think okay can't wait till next year because they will have moved on and one of the biggest lessons i learned in the whole game of educator twister somebody else will come in and take their place next year there will be another student just like that or another parent just like that and so rather than waiting for it to be over i need to learn how to do my best in working with that situation and so as a reminder yes i wanted to say this that what you do is not easy and there's really no way for us to make it easy so let's do spend some time kind of thinking through what's its value what's the why behind what i do how do i connect the dots in the face of all these things that i had written down to change your your game of twister and so one of the things we wanted to do is to do our best in the situation where we're trying to make this work on seven streaming networks and two thousand people all over rochelle county is to give you a little bit of time to process some of the things we've talked about and and we're going to make this do it's a game of twister we don't know that it'll work exactly the way we play it we're going to do our best but what we'd like to do is take that beginning ideas the fact that um we've all been trained either before we got this job or once we got in this job but there have been a whole bunch of twister things that have happened since you've had that job that you weren't trained about that you had to learn from on the spot and i know there are probably some teachers out there listening who have been employed as teachers like five weeks but there are still some things they've already learned and there's some people here who have been working as an educator in all these different positions for 35 years and there are lots of things that that you could have learned and so as we i'm looking josh is back up there in the booth so as we look to this first short breakout session we thought we'd take about seven minutes now about seven minutes later on to kind of think through some of those ideas that we have from the beginning and uh and i will admit dr roberts dr hack mr jensen dr bozeman they said let's just play twister for seven minutes but i haven't been able to walk very well since i played that with my granddaughters and so i had to come up with a different idea so for seven minutes we're going to give you wherever you are dr bozeman has a plan for this group that i'm looking at in person they're facilitators at all the different places where we're streaming this to have a plan of some kind we're going to take about seven minutes and i'd like to just think about what are our first thoughts on this what is one valuable thing you've learned as an educator that you are not taught before taking this job this is valuable knowledge this is powerful stuff so i'm going to give you a chance to think that through as we talk about it but that's the question i'm sending out do you hear my friends in the auditorium but to everybody that's watching in some other venue what's one valuable thing that you've learned since you've been on this job as an educator that you weren't taught beforehand what's the practical knowledge that you have and so josh i don't know what you're doing with the other people around the world we here are going to see if i can make this work that was a lot we are not going to do that i'm going to look at my watch so we're going to take seven minutes dr bozeman has a plan am i right here never nobody answered that do this right there's okay we'll talk with their departments great great so we have people stationed josh if you're ready to kind of shut us down with the whole world we'll come back in seven minutes on my watch so thank you for however that worked and for the facilitators that are are making that happen there's so many different venues and so we you think that i had a good conversation with uh with the south side lunch line people because they've seen grace and cece come through there and that was just an awesome connection um and and they saw through this twister game we had because they've never seen grayson cece brown like that and i told him we had to stage it for the for the pictures they really had to run with that uh that process and then i'd like to go into this part of it because i'm back to the slide about how you know you work hard every day it's just it's hard work it's valuable work but it's hard work and sometimes you know you're being asked to connect the dots by a lot of different people and you're knowing that within your brain it's important to connect the dots for yourself you recognize that about taking ownership of your job but sometimes it's hard to see that that's connected and sometimes you think maybe the dots haven't connected at all so let's spend just a couple minutes talking about okay what do we do when we just don't see the the uh results of the dots connecting that we would like to have in what we do and so some thoughts about when the dots don't connect or when we don't see them connecting quick story in june of 1974 north central high school in indianapolis was having his graduation ceremony and i walked up to the microphone to speak to my classmates now we have to do a quick timeout because i need to show this slide for those of you that don't know me poop i was not the valedictorian and so i know the people who know me when i said i stepped up the microphone they never thought for a second oh it's because he's not victorian they thought it was some prank and that's the people know me so those of you that don't know me i want to clearly say when i tell this story that was not like a humble brag oh i was i was not the valedictorian i think some of them my teachers in the audience moved when i stepped up to the microphone but it was 1974 i was 18 years old it was the graduating class and they gave me a little bit of freedom to say whatever i wanted to to my classmates and so part of what i said was what's known as most places is the irish blessing so part of what i said was this may the road rise to meet you may the wind be always at your back may the sun shine warm upon your face the rains fall soft upon your fields and until we meet again may god hold you in the palm of his hand and i thought that was a beautiful bend and i still think it's beautiful but looking back the 18 year old of me was really excited to share with his classmates i hope the world works for us and toward us i hope we live life that's easy i hope that life makes things uh easy for us as we move ahead i hope everything comes together for us and that was the 18 year old me from that perspective looking ahead at what i thought life should be and the 66 year old me now looks back on that and realizes that is not really the wish that i had for me and my classmates because i've realized since then that it's not the easy moments in life that lead us to growth it's the difficult challenging moments in life that lead us to growth and if life were really all about soft winds and gentle sunshine we'd never grow because we grow from the challenges and so as i'm thinking about connecting that to twister i want to share that with you when the game is soft and easy at first there's nothing to it but when you get twisted out of shape in your job and when you get challenged and twisted out of shape in your life outside your job how do we put that in perspective well i'd like to offer that we put it in perspective because those are our moments facing challenges are our greatest opportunity for growth everything that was on the back of this spinner all those things that i read some we laughed at some we identified with some we shook our head especially those of you who know exactly what i'm talking about when a student gets sick in your building you got to make it better that's what you do and that's not why you signed up for this job you do it because that's what you do for the building so those of you that were thinking about those things as we went through you know we're thinking about can we think about the challenges to our day in terms of opportunities for growth as we're twisted and bent and challenges happen how do those become opportunities for growth one of the things that i've heard since i was 18 was that the qualities we really want are impossible to develop unless they're challenged outside of our comfort zone one that i continually work on is patience i just want to be a more patient person but if everything goes my way if the winds are always soft on my face and the sunshine it's warm up on my field i don't get any more patient for me to become more patient i've got to stand in long lines i've got to try to contact the cable company and be put on hold in situations like that those challenges that's the only way i can become patient because we can't become more patient unless we're put into situations where we're tempted to be impatient and similarly we can't become stronger unless we're put into situations where we're tempted to be weak and on the same lines we can't become braver unless we're put into situations where we're tempted to be fearful and because we need those challenging situations can we flip it around we'll never avoid them i've got a slide that says what you do is not easy we're not going to avoid them instead can we embrace them and what we become by and with those opportunities i had a great mentor his name was phil when i was a young teacher and coach and he always said you know what there's going to be a crisis every day and you've got two ways to face it you can spend all day trying to hide from that crisis or you can say bring it on it's gonna happen today anyway let's have it in the morning let me work through it and we'll go from there and you know over the decades i would say that there's going to be a crisis today is an understatement in all of your work and all of our work there are going to be multiple crises a day but those are our opportunities for growth we will never hide from them i face the fact that this job is difficult but it's valuable and i'm proud that i do it and so i'm going to take on those challenges so thinking about that in terms of as we move forward how do we look at the times we're all twisted out of shape sometimes we just have to take a deep breath and go okay this is my growth opportunity i'm doing what i need to do to the best of my ability and so let's get into our next little piece of conversation and see how this works the second time i'd love for you to think about what challenges do you anticipate knowing your job as you do what challenges do you anticipate and how can you use those challenges what can you get from each one to help yourself grow in your role as educated i'll say that again what challenges do we now anticipate in our jobs in our lives and our work with kids and how can we think ahead plan ahead to use those in a way that helps us continue to grow as educators we're going to try seven minutes again how we doing josh can we send it out to the real world dr bozeman's ready facilitators are getting ready in this setting that'd be great i don't know that our our seven minute kind of shows this time but i'm gonna do in my watch so let's try this second section for seven minutes i okay we can finish up that seven minutes again facilitators thank you and thank you for all of you that are taking ideas and putting them in the process thinking about how to use them um it's funny because we don't know how things are going at north high school or north side central you know schmidt smith all those places but i will brag on this place there was a lot of laughter and there was even clapping during that seven minute breakout session i don't know why but it doesn't matter and it mostly came from that rowdy section back there and i don't know why but it doesn't matter anytime you can have a session where there's laughter and some clapping and some talking and sharing it's worth it to me so hope it's going well in all those other places and thank you for what you're doing as educators i found a video clip of steve jobs when he gave the commencement speech at stanford university in 2005 and i've watched it probably 20 times because it's really inspiring to me and in that clip it's a longer speech but in that clip there's about a two and a half minute section where what he says just brilliantly attaches to exactly what we're talking about today and that's what steve jobs looked like when he gave the commencement speech i'm telling you that because it's really interesting how twister moments show up in our lives and this morning at about 5 45 when i was reviewing this slideshow one more time and i clicked on this brilliant thing that steve jobs is going to say to support what i've been saying i realized i had the wrong clip and i did that on purpose just to show you that the twister moments happened to all of us i tried to put a positive spin on that challenge i went out to amy who was drinking her coffee i said okay i got a twister moment i've got the wrong clip and it's too late for me to fix it and she's paused for a second she kind of worked her ear and she said i think you've got another twister moment coming i think i hear the dog throwing up in my closet this morning so there you go i caused those things on purpose let me just tell you what steve jobs would have said to you if i had the clip and they had done that uh the way i intended but steve jobs at this point was very very sick with cancer and he was talking about panicking the dots in life and this is what he said that i want to share with you he said in life you can't connect the dots looking forward you can only connect the dots of your life when you're looking back he said that's why you have to have faith in what you're doing and that you're doing the right thing his was a quick story about he dropped out of college because he wasn't doing well but he didn't leave the university because he loved to learn and so he slept on friends couches he wasn't allowed to be there he audited classes and one class that he audited was calligraphy you know the world's fanciest writing and he said in that calligraphy class he learned more about styles what became fonts serifs spacing between words and he said that class once he dropped out actually was a huge part of making computers so user-friendly in terms of what we looked at and he said if i never dropped out i never would have taken that course it wasn't in my major and it made a big effect so his point was we don't necessarily see those dots connecting looking forward but to see them what we see them looking back so thank you to steve jobs for for that and just a reminder that when you're not seeing them sometimes it's just about keeping the faith it's about searching in your head and your heart and your spirit that i'm doing the right thing for these kids every day and knowing trusting that those dots will connect as we all work together to make that process in every group i've ever spoken to there were always a few yawns in the morning because i think all of us no matter what we do we wake up sleepy we wake up tired but i will say that if we wake up sleepy but know what we're doing that day is valuable what we're doing that day is important it's just a little easier to get out of bed than if you don't and i know we think that know that i hope you know that i remember that as educators what we're doing every day is valuable and important and so i'd like to close with two stories about connecting the dots if you just bear with me on that and one is about a student that i had a number of years ago and his name was scott and i had him in sophomore english when he was a sophomore obviously but not so obviously i had him in sophomore english when he was a junior because he maybe hadn't passed it the first time that we were together but i liked him he was a great english student english wasn't his connection but he was easy going and he was funny and we'd laugh sometimes and we had a pretty good relationship i'm not sure if he passed it the second time either eventually he was out of high school again i don't know if he graduated or if he just moved on and i didn't see him for 20 10 or 12 years until one day i took my car in to have the oil changed and there was scott you know mr weiner how you doing he's working this oil change place that i went said scott doing great he said i i got you covered and so he started working on the engine and then he kind of came in quicker than i expected he said ooh mr weinheimer your serpentine belt here is shredded we're gonna have to we have to replace that and i was mad because a week earlier that belt had shredded and i just this was the replacement belt and i didn't know what was wrong they shouldn't be shredding in a week and so i was kind of growling about it he said i i'll take care of it i'll do that i'll do the oil and i'll get that belt fixed for you and he did that and he and he shut the hood and he came back and he said you wouldn't believe this but when i was changing the belt i noticed that just beside the belt was a screw and that screw was about a half a turn from being fully screwed in and he said that screw was catching on your belt that was what shredding these belts and so i just went ahead and i turned that screw all the way he goes you're good from now on and i thought man what an awesome moment i didn't teach him how to know that i didn't teach you how to notice that i didn't teach him how to pay attention to detail but some educators somewhere did and he saved me a lot of headache and heartache and those dots have all connected in what he's doing i was the benefit of it but wherever you are out there whoever worked with god thank you for connecting those dots and you may never see that you connected them with him but i got to see it and that was a neat moment i really really appreciated that and i'd like to share one more with you and this one is really fresh and so it's a little bit difficult for me to share but i think it's important i really want to share this with you a couple of months ago my mother died and um my father has passed away a number of years before that and so this was like the end of all the material possessions that people accumulate in other words when we cleaned her apartment this was it okay this stuff was going away and and that included some stuff that was really sentimental to me you know the dining room table that we've used ever since i was a little boy was going away uh the recliner that my dad used to sit in the coffee table they brought back from europe all these things were going away and so i was really nostalgic and sad as i sat in her apartment the day that the auction uh furniture people came and they came in the door they were real real good and polite three of them were probably in their 20s one of them a man was much closer to my age than he was to their age and they started working and they carried stuff out and there was a lot of it because my mom could accumulate stuff and uh and they took it out to the truck and come back in and carry in about the third time back in uh the older man that was working for them looked at my mom's apartment door where her name plate was and he just stopped for a minute he got kind of a perplexed look on his face and then he walked into where i was sitting and he said was gene weinheimer your mom i said yes he said gene weinheimer the social worker who works for work for children's bureau in indianapolis and i said yes and then there was this pause and he said she was my social worker she was my caseworker and for my sister your mom saved our lives and he went on to tell me that his home situation was unlivable and they've been assigned a children's bureau and my mom was their caseworker he said she found me a foster home she found my sister a foster home she would come pick me up at school once a week and we had this little routine where i'd get in the car and she would say hey you need anything and i'd say oh i'm sure i'm hungry and she takes me to get a big mac every week he said your mom drove me to michigan city and went in with me when i went to visit my father in prison and the rest of the day he told all his co-workers about this gene and he told the people that walked by the apartment my mom's friends about miss gene and what she meant in his life and at one point he said to me my sister and i have always wondered what happened to miss gene and now i know and they finished and everything was gone i was sitting in this empty place on a little you know like soccer chair little canvas chair because i had something to sit on and as they were leaving he stopped by and he had a little slip of paper and he got out his pencil and he wrote something down and he handed it to me and it was his name and his phone number and he said miss jean always made us feel like we were her favorite children to work with in the world he said i feel like you and i are family and he left but just outside the door he came back in and he had his phone and he said can i ask you a question could i ask you where your mom was buried he said my sister just sent me a text so you see his head yeah my sister just showed me a text she wants to put flowers on your mom's grave i thought about that for a long time you know that event had happened originally in the 1980s my mom has passed away now but you know what she connected some dots and those people's lives have changed he told me all about his current job he told me where his sister works he was so proud of what they've become he loved his foster family and all those docs connected and she'll i don't know never know that but man i know that and for me that was a real real special blessed moment to get that and so i wanted to kind of close with that to share with you there's a bunch of that that you do every day you are connecting dots every day because what you do every interaction you have with children is valuable and important and makes a difference it can be long lasting and i'm talking about 30 or 40 years from now and you may never you may never get a chance to see that you may never scott may not change your oil or you may not run into your you know your social worker from before but what you're doing is a valuable piece of all that and the most important thing i want to share with you this morning is that just a reminder that what you're doing is really valuable and even the days you don't see the dots connecting i want you to know they are connected do these things with your head and your heart and your spirit and do them in great faith because you connecting the dots is making a difference in people's lives every day i am really thankful to get to your time this morning thank you [Applause] [Music] rick thank you so much for being here with us today uh you are a gift to us have been for many years in our school corporation to continue to do that um [Applause] [Music] we have the screen up i have something on my computer but nothing else all right i'm just going to go from here um we're going to to wrap up a lot of things left for the rest of the pd day this is a break to about 9 35 i think dr bozeman will come up here in a second and help delegate tasks and responsibilities as we leave the auditorium around the district again you'll be staying in your buildings for the most part and getting to building specific things from 9 35 to 10 45 is building and program specific work uh that is tied to the strategic plan that i outlined earlier we then have a 10 45 to 12 30 and a prep lunch time period for much of the corporation and then from 12 30 or 3 as a continuation of that school building and specific needs again tied in to the strategic plan um additionally as we put up on the slide earlier there are many that have a variety of other tasks and responsibilities today things to go to sessions to go to so hopefully you know that scheduling but i'm going to bring dr bozeman up for this group and back in the buildings you should be able to work with your buildings and take your break and move on from there thank you [Applause] you

mic and do the budget presentation for 2023 what is on the screen is what is at what is at your station so if you would like to move you can if you want to stay you can do that as well okay thank you jeremy okay members of the board public thank you um so we're here to discuss the calendar year 2023 budget for the school corporation we're going to go over the budget calendar we're going to talk about our capital projects plan our bus replacement plan funds to be raised and give you a little historical comparison how these numbers replace compared to the history and then give my recommendation for the board so here we are on september 6th on after tonight's meeting we will publish on the gateways system the state gateway system the notice of our public hearing we will have a public hearing on the budget on our regular scheduled board meeting on september 19th and then the board will formally adopt the budget at our regular meeting on october 17th so just remind everybody the budget is a calendar year budget even though most of us in the room operate on a school year fiscal year but we received our 2022 budget on december 27th um our net assessed valuation which is the value of all the properties in our school district is just over 5 billion we've exceeded the 5 billion amount here for the first time and when you look at the gross av which also includes residents and areas that are in within a tif district those is about 5.6 billion dollars so our net av increased by about a quarter billion dollars 5.1 percent from 21 to 22 and that was same amount for the referendum funds as well so what does that mean when you have a higher assessed value it could mean less it means less a lower tax rate for our residents preliminary indications are that our assessed value is going to increase actually nine and a half percent from 22 to 23 which is a huge jump but it's all market driven it's all based on the values of homes values of commercial property and if we've seen anything in the last few years is the skyrocketing cost of homes and the value of homes and that's exactly what that is based on just want to give the board a quick review that about 15 months ago the state of indiana passed their bi-annual budget and they increased funding for k-12 tuition support by over a billion dollars which was the largest increase in state history it was a 4.6 percent increase for this year and another 4.3 percent in funding for next year the foundation amount which is the basis of how much each school district gets per kid um that also increased and that goes to all school districts and you can see where complexity money and special leg grants also increase so again i'll reiterate how grateful we were to the general assembly for pushing this money into the k-12 pie we will they will be doing the same thing again and starting in january and that will be the long budget session going through may hopeful i you know when i'm not necessarily expecting increases by this amount but hopefully we'll still be able to get more funding put into the pot this is just a quick illustration of how much the k-12 pie has been in the state budget just up to five six years ago was just over 7 billion now it's over it's up to 8.2 for this fiscal year and you can correspondingly see how much funding we get per student and this year we're just over 6 500 per kid it's all about your adm count and how many students you have and the more kids you have the more expenditures you're going to need and so forth so when we're preparing the budget for calendar year 23 everything is based on revenue just like your household your expenditures have to be based on what your income is and so when we're preparing the budget for what our expenditures are going to be not only for this year but for the beginning of next school year we're really trying to figure out what that revenue is going to be but that comes with some challenges because the revenue we get for this year from july through december is going to be based on our september adm count which hasn't even happened yet and that will be on september 16th and then the first half of 23 is going to be based on the february 23 count and a year from now when we're doing the fall count in september of 23 that determines our funding for july through june of 23.

this is not a hearing we typically do but is necessitated due to state statute related to us having to adopt our budget on preliminary forms um prior to the state releasing final forms because of the delays with the legislature this year um so with that i will turn it over to dina duba sorry throat locked up there dina dumoulin who is our director of finance to walk you through the revisions good morning i'm sorry i'm going to interrupt you real quick and if anybody needs spanish translation we have a spanish translation in the back espanola my apologies go ahead uh good evening madam president members of the board dr lewis and exec team for our budget we have made some assumptions as we do every year prior to presenting a budget one of those is that we we already recognize that our numbers are artificially high what we're trying to do is capture as much budget capacity as possible so this is based off of a report that was gathered on june 7th so that is prior to any 10-day drops so you need to be aware of that and then the carry forward also because of the high high number of vacancies across the district across schools and across the departments we have higher than normal carry forward as well which is reflected in this budget the next two slides that you see are showing you what was proposed earlier in june and then the second screen there is the revision that we're bringing forward tonight and then we have a summary page that kind of goes over the differences it's really the mmo that has changed a little bit based on those numbers that we captured earlier so you can see that just just shy of 200 000 we've picked that budget capacity up in hopes that we can maintain numbers we do however expect a significant decrease in the december revision once everything gets reconciled and the ten day drops are processed it does include all of the federal funds from the pandemic relief funds and the revenues that are associated with that in this budget as well the new base level is captured in this it was an estimate in the in the proposed budget the one number that is still proposed in this is the free and reduced and that's a that's a new funding source this year that was added that's based on 2019 numbers pre-covered because of course during covert the rules kind of changed so until we get this year's numbers we'll we'll use the 19 numbers to kind of guide this budget process and then as we discussed earlier the december revision is probably going to be a mandatory revision for us anytime you are over budget by more than one percent you're required to come in december and revise that budget um a lot of the future challenges are ones that we have already discussed in in quite length um the first bullet is really the driving force behind everything it's adm so as your adm continues to decline so will your budget capacity for school finance we've talked about tax revenues from the state because of tax cuts those are declining year after year that third bullet is an important one for us as we've discussed in the past new funding is capped for school districts at two percent inflation rate we all know it's much higher than that so we're feeling it pretty heavily in some of our big departments food costs for food service paper goods for physical plant services parts and repairs for buses things like that are all at a much higher cost way beyond the two percent that we're actually being funded for um the pandemic relief funds there's actually two sets that will be impacting us in the future one is some of the new positions and the new programs that we put in face using esser funds so somewhere down the line when those funds go away there will be discussions about well what do we do now with those programs or services or people absorbing them back into mno at the level they're in now unless we have a big increase just won't be possible without cuts or something like that and then the second part of the ester funds is remember we have significant amounts of mno expenses that were moved into esser funds the december revision you will probably start seeing some of those costs come back in we're already making plans to move some costs back into mmo that had been temporarily moved into esser so that december revision um you'll see a lot of movement there also just while we're on the topic when you see the afr come out this year and next year you're going to see some waves of up and down because of the moving of funds between esther and m o and then as we discussed we also have um carry forward that is inflated because of vacancy savings um i just looked it up before we came over and we already have another 1.7 vacancy savings just from the volume of people that we can't hire for the positions that we have funded so that's driving our carry forward as well and luckily we have that because we are expecting a cut in december 1.7 million yeah okay based on the positions we have open today so it's significant so if we if we would have filled all those positions we'd be in a much different situation but over the last few years because of the staffing issues um we've we've actually been able to bank some money in mno and those were the added positions yes and that's all the rest of our time we have left for questions does anyone have questions no okay we do not have any further questions thank you so much right that brings us to our board meeting and if there's anyone in the audience that has a question they would they can come up to the podium and ask a question regarding the budget does anybody in the audience have a question yes no oh sorry sorry no we don't okay thank you miss mcshuffrey um we move on to the regular board meeting now and we're going to start off with our land acknowledgement creighton school district understands that our community of schools is located on the ancestral land of the odom jude and akumal odam people who descended from the hohokam and have inhabited these lands since time immemorial the odom whose names translates literally to people are vibrant culture and communities spanning countless generations into the past continuing to thrive in the present and carrying a powerful legacy for generations into the future with this acknowledgement the creighton school district formally recognizes that the traditional care in keeping of these lands by indigenous people is an aspirational model of community stewardship that we are committed to honor with practices policy and human relations ms mcsharphree can you lead us in the pledge of allegiance two six all right it looks like we have messier's myself miss mccaleb and miss mcshaffry here with us um i already did our welcome statement statement so i'm not going to do it again um i move the governing board approve the agenda as presented a second all those in favor hi i all right and that brings us to item 3b adoption of revised number one 2022 2023 budgets i move the governing board adopt the revised number one total aggregate school district budget per ars 15905 and specifically 15 905 e1 and ars 15905q for fiscal year 2223 i second all those in favor hi i i i alright motion passes and that brings us to public comments and we will have vincent first three minutes hi vincent if you just want us tell us your name and you'll have three minutes okay all right go ahead hi my name is vincent i'm a student from that i just wanted to say that i don't think i'm being treated well over there because they're like um [Music] i've been being very mean you know and first day of school um i was in office for an hour i'm missing out on work and stuff and i don't know it's just that i don't think mackin is like being good to me and that's why i'm gonna be moving schools um [Music] on this thursday because of that and um yeah that's basically it it is that um the like people at my kids not very like treating me very well and being like rude yeah okay thank you vincent high school in 2005.

oh and by the way as i mentioned they're going to change the formula for depending how much we get in 10 months from now so when we're trying to figure out the revenue for 23 we're really just using the best information we have now we're using what we see as the trend what we have as our enrollment graduation sizes incoming kindergartners we take that all consideration in order to try to estimate however we have no idea what's going to go on in indianapolis in the long session i don't see us being cut but it's hard to estimate how much additional funds we're going to get speaking of class sizes in adm one of the challenges that we have now is that we are our graduating classes are hovering around 800 students each and that's been that way for a while now and that is still the trend our high school classes are all around that size however we have approximately 600 kids coming in as kindergartners so our overall cohort population of students is decreasing as of now or excuse me as of last week we're looking to be down approximately 120 students compared to last year and that doesn't that doesn't mean that kids left and they moved we get an influx of kids in fact when you have 800 going out and 600 coming in you would think that our loss would be more but we are a destination of choice and we get a lot of move-ins from the parochial schools and from other people who want to come and bring their kids here and so that's why our loss is not 200 kids per year doing the math at 6 500 per kid that equates to about 780 000 less revenue for this fiscal year if we would have maintained um a steady amount of enrollment but we we know this and it's all based on facts and information that you have at the time so as much as we hate being down 120 we can see this coming and in fact it's probably going to be the trend for the next couple years because we know that the class sizes in all four of our grade levels that we have here at the high school are all still hovering those ninety 780 hundred kids so unless there's a big rash of influx of kindergarteners we're probably gonna we might be losing a hundred kids a year and we then base our expenditures accordingly based on that projected revenue so i want to take a quick moment and talk about circuit breaker you hear about units of government losing revenue to the circuit breaker caps that are in the constitution lake county and st joe county had an exemption for 10 years from 2010 through 2020 but since we have a higher av and low tax rates for our community our circuit breaker loss is not that much it is this past year or here in 20 2022 we're just a little over two hundred and five thousand dollars of lost revenue and two hundred and five thousand dollars is a lot of money and it seems like a lot of money but it's only about a half a percent of our total tax revenue here's a little comparison of the 16 school districts in lake county and how much money they are losing annually to the circuit breaker so the first column of the levy is this is how much tax dollars they need to raise in order to meet their operating costs and if you take gary for example almost 45 24 25 million dollars is coming off the top that is not even being billed to the constituents in the area so if you work your way down where you can see that our half a percent is very low compared to others hanover because of the growing population they have there a lot of construction their assessed value has gone up and therefore they do not have as much of a circuit breaker loss and this is just the same data in a nice colorful graph and you will see us at the very bottom toward the bottom there in blue any questions so far all right the next thing we want to talk about is our capital projects plan state law requires us that we come up with a capital plan for improvements or large dollar items that we plan to do over the next three years the key word here is plan is because things always pop up and you're always got a plan and then you just never know what's going to happen so i work with our director of facilities who works with his the heck custodians at each of the buildings and the school principals to determine you know what are things that we really need for our first priority is always health and safety issues bill uses that judgment and then him and i get together and we come up with a plan so here in 2023 we always put an allocation in our operating fund for asphalt and roof repairs this is not replacing a roof this is we've got a leak or we have to just do a patch same thing with asphalt we put an allocation in to replace desks and chairs because it's furniture and we've got a lot of kids the furniture gets worn over years we put some money in the budget for that for when it comes up the problem with that is it's difficult to get desks and chairs now from any supplier just because it's the world we live in for many products but hopefully that will turn around we're looking to replace the intercom system and do some painting at grimmer at holmen we're looking to paint the gym and continue carpet replacements at colling we the front of colleen was paved this year and we want to finish that off next year and i believe do the the back side and in on the round then we'll look to paint the gems at cole and get piper some more painting and replacing some doors at watson it's a little scaled down this year because of how much we did this year as you can recall seeing bill's four or six page list of all the summer projects we did we've spent a lot of money uh really getting our schools in some great shape so these some of these things besides the intercom system are more you know cosmetic some things that need to be done um at 24 some of the same things we're looking to maybe remodel the locker room at kaler some gym painting at bivich a new sign at holmen roof replacements at holmen and piper protzman has talked about putting in a concrete playground i'm in one of the coves and then that will painting the gym at watson would be then the last gym we would do three of them in 23 two of them at 24.

i'm currently a public defender for maricopa county i'm a former public educator and my husband was a former high school teacher as well i work full time representing indigent folks and that's why one of my top priorities is taking a greater look at inequities in the policies we have in the district and committing to equity within the district given i i'm very involved and very committed to ending the school the prison pipeline that's very personal to me additionally given my background i number one priority aside from that as it is retaining teachers and staff clearly there are shortages in the district and we really need to figure out what's behind that number one is actually listening to what teachers and staff have to say and trying our best to implement things according to their needs they're the experts in their field so we should hear what they have to say and actually listen and not just have it go in one ear and out the other and lastly i went to school at a time when public schools were being attacked but not in the way they are now you still had to attend your neighborhood school and our schools were the centers of our communities and i'd really love to see our district get back to that possibly by opening up after hours we only have one park in this district allowing families to utilize our facilities at other times these are things that i would love to bring up and discuss once i'm on the board um and so this is just kind of highlighting some of the things that are important to me and introducing myself to the board and to the community and i look forward to getting to work starting in january so thank you thank you um that brings us to our next superintendent report governing board member of our community it's so great to see so many familiar fun faces uh first of all i would like the community to know that a group of superintendents across the state have signed a request for the legislature to get together to re-engage in the aggregate expenditure limit hoping for a session to uh uplift that two percent uh we were able to successfully adjust it just for the year but it's and it needs to be fully revamped so we're hoping to be advocating for that as a larger group statewide um secondly i would like to say saturday was just wonderful i really enjoyed our time together reflecting on uh how we thought we were doing with our board expectations we i think changed the word to board agreements liking the idea of agreeing and agreement the self-evaluation conversation was phased around the expectations uh the feedback and the deep reflections of each of you was very thought provoking we also dug in deep with our facilitator on our work with equity and how we see ourselves as leaders of equity and i appreciated the strategic planning goal review and the update from the strategic planning goals it was just a marvelous day together i want to say that in our last equity training we did with elevate we um deepened our work again with dr nicole law and she's the author of a book called collective equity that i think would be a marvelous read for us across the district uh and the focus of collective equity in terms of its i really particularly found a couple of chapters compelling and i haven't read it all but culturally fortifying practices strengthening all the members in the learning community so that we can create a movement where we can all and her term is breed so it really mirrors the space we're trying to create with and for one another and i really appreciate where we're going with that so thank you to the elevate team and to dr nicole law uh i wanted to say that the maricopa county office's superintendent and office of elections team did indeed announce that we will have two new board members we have two seats open mr angel campos will not be returning and uh miss sophia creadal is up for election again and so she and miss katie gibson mclean who you just met were both appointed officially most recently so we want to give a round of applause to those two women and you just met katie we continue to work diligently on staffing thank you so much dr lugo and our principals and all the people who work diligently we have are we're waiting just at the for the finesse of our h1 visas for our teachers from mexico that we're bringing so thank you i know that's a lot of bureaucracy that we will work through to get these wonderful people here uh we have e-lit teachers stepping in and running classrooms and doing an amazing job and whole being on hold with their illiteracy programs that we had hoped to get started who are really helping our kids develop uh in their literacy in their regular classroom while we fill these handful of positions left that we have and the hard to fill positions a shout out to one of our teachers who is continuing to work on getting a special education degree that we're looking forward to her completion so maybe we can fill up one of those positions well uh i would like to say that the staff just received their sign their stay and signed stipend for a thousand dollars all staff members got it so that was what friday guys so if if everybody signed your your friday stipend should be coming paper performance for staff will be coming out in october from the 21 22 so we have another bump coming there and we're looking forward to bringing to the board a conversation that we're having to see what we can do to extend our vacancy savings so that vacancy savings can be put into the hands of our staff so we're we're looking at a third stipend we're hoping depending on the board vote um to bring to you maybe first of october we might be able to bring have some numbers ready for you to consider um i'd like to remind everybody we are under intensive heat advisory so if parents and staff will be mindful to stay hydrated and stay cool as much as we love recess and getting warm and we will get overheated and we've had some dangerous things on the hiking trails this past week so we've got to keep our kids and each other and ourselves hydrated the heat advisory is very real and and can be very dangerous and in fact deadly so we want to be mindful of that i would like to thank our artists our young artists the kennedy from loma linda students are our first uh debut of our artwork uh erica uh spiradudo is the art teacher from um uh kennedy at loma linda and the first through eighth graders that are highlighted over there tonight are focused on nature that was their theme um i would like to send out thoughts and prayers to those brothers and sisters we have in pakistan the flood and the displacement thousands upon thousands upon thousands of people there are experiencing is beyond my capacity to understand so just i know that you know we're still one one globe and together we care for one another thank you thank you miss mccheffery um board update yeah i actually um just spoke from a with a parent today um and it reminded me of the concerns mostly staff brought last year about principles not being on campus enough and i'm sure this varies from school to school but we did hear that a lot last year and a parent just experienced it um uh this parent's daughter was is not wanting to go to school um a little one and they're not finding a way to get parent-teacher conferences to figure out what's going on because there's no coverage for teachers um i think us being so understaffed at the moment principles it's really important that they're on campus and i mentioned this last year to dr lewis and i believe there's like a leadership council once a week and i twice a month okay they're still they i think they need to be on campus as much as possible and and not being pulled at district-wide meetings unless it's absolutely necessary just just my two cents is a customer service issue if we want to keep our families here and our staff here um they they need that that help from their leadership on campus thank you that's michaleb um just a second i'm excited to see student artwork here i'm also excited to see physically students here um saturday we had some really good discussions they were very student centered teacher centered and we talked a lot about how can we get more student voice more student presence throughout our district leadership as well as with the board so i'm excited to see where that goes and then the next three days actually four days i'll be attending the asba law conference and delegate assembly so i look forward to learning about all of the implications good or bad all of our new legislation from this year we'll have on our schools and be able to bring that back to the board and the cabinet as well as my own school district because we're always learning so i'm excited for that it's going to be a lot of brain numbing work i'm sure but um i know that the lineup that they have is looking really really good so thank you mrs thank you good evening i am also really happy to see the artwork um bright colors i love it i like that it's decorated in here um with student work i also enjoyed saturday um and just being open and honest and being able to move forward with the board and um i heard there's a get together tomorrow for the override um i wish i could make it i just like literally found out about it an hour before so maybe next time you can get invited to those things thanks all right um yes our board retreat was awesome and since we're in the subject of you know certain people bringing the school to prison pipeline and all these things one of the things that really stood out for me is that in part of our strategic plan we said access diversity equity inclusion what we define that as and what we're going to do as a district we said crane community advocates advocates for equity and justice and identifies and eliminates internal oppressive systems and ensures access to learning opportunity and success i can't continue this meeting without pretending i just didn't hear two kids come up here and said how they were felt by our school system until this institution realizes the harm that we're causing on our kids nothing is going to get better it's part of our strategic plan we have it everywhere adventurous thinkers collaborate learners kind-hearted leaders what kind of hearted leader makes a child feel that way and it's not just one person or two or three it's the institution and as a whole i'm not talking and pointing fingers at anybody specifically we need to do better for these kids i'm glad that our strategic plan is going in that route but we're really behind and we really get it together for these babies because we're failing them at the end of the day and we were put here and work here to do exactly just for them nothing else matters if these kids do not thrive some of them are surviving right now if you go out to these homes in these districts they literally are surviving they can't even live so this is unacceptable approval of consent i move the governing board approve consent items a through in accordance with policy b-e-d-b e i would like to pull item d from consent for discussion d if i move the governing board um approve consent items a through c and then e through j in accordance with policy b e d b e a second all those in favor aye aye aye that's mick jeffrey um hilda do you want to make a note that miss carrillo doll stepped out okay um so there's a very large so i'm just wondering why the school facilities board gym roof replacement for creighton academy is listed here under donations that just seems odd to me that is a great question so it was a situation of timing because of the monday holiday and the late notification of the availability of the funding we would have been unable to properly notice and technically the grant is a hearing or the the grant is a donation and so it you know was legitimate for us to put it there since the donation item existed it wouldn't require reposting the meeting which there really wasn't time to do um and the reason for the time sensitivity of it was we wanted to make certain that we claim the funds as soon as possible particularly with the delays with things like ripping materials anything that gets delayed seems like the price goes up and then we're having to fight with the school facilities board for a cost increase so mr wells worked diligently um as he has been to get a lot of these grants that are coming in and we just wanted to make sure we took advantage of them um i sincerely apologize for the oddity of how it looked because it wasn't the normal way we would do it we just wanted to make sure that we didn't lose the funds due to the oddities with the timing of the holiday and everything thank you very much um and then i just just for transparency's sake had a couple other questions as i was looking at it so do we have so when the vendor for this particular job is chosen the board wouldn't need to vote on it or not need to vote on it because it's under a million dollar threshold we probably don't right right it's a great question um it the dollar threshold is a component of it there's also some oddities with these what's now called school facilities oversight board projects because they drive how the procurement works for it so the selection process is tied into the school facilities oversight board's approval of the funding so it these come oddly like normally we go through a procurement we come to the board the board would approve the procurement with these we go through the procurement it goes to the school facilities oversight board they approve it and then it's kind of a yes or no do you want the money deal when it comes to the board for to approve the acceptance of the grant so um my personal opinion not that it's worth much is that that procurement should be separated from the sfob but um that is the way the system functions okay so they would actually ch choose who the vendor they actually work with the district in the selection so the district runs the process but we run it under the oversight of the school facilities oversight gotcha and according to those rules okay and do we have a um [Music] joc set up yeah job order contracting yeah we use the state's job order contracting okay through i believe it's adoa arizona department of administration okay um and that was um if you remember back in june and i apologize for my voice today um it doesn't hurt it just is hard for to get the sound out um but back in june um i think we brought a couple of items in one of them was the joc approvals for up to certain thresholds and that was part of that whole procurement for situations like not just like this but if we had to do a sudden repair or something okay and then that means also that there's three or four vendors on listed right correct um if i remember correctly and i wish i had mr wells here with me what i recall but i don't want to commit to this was even though there's multiples listed um there was we did have uh multiple bids submitted like so that was there was pricing that was submitted on okay so that's my understanding but like i said i i wasn't okay that closely uh tied to that but certainly something i could get clarification okay maybe just in our next board update that would be great and like who the vendors are that are on the joc that'd be great i would also like to compliment scott wells i was going to say that i was going to say i'm sorry awesome go for it yeah no i just um i we all know that funding is really tight and anytime we can get anything from the school facilities board amazing and it is a lengthy process and i know scott's not here but if you're listening um we just appreciate the work that scott's done for this district because it's a big deal it's 780 000 that our district isn't having to pull out of our pockets to repair a roof which is something that literally is needed to keep safe to keep over our kids heads so and it can be tricky to get those dollars and he is a master yep it is an arcane process that's the best phrase i can come up with and he has just gone at it with all f urbans and passion for supporting history yeah yeah thank you anything else do you want to make the motion yeah i move the governing board approve consent agenda item d in accordance with policy b-e-d-d-e second all those in favor hi hi oh and i'm i know i'm late to the party but mr wells is watching um about all the praise but he did say yes we received three quotes for the project and that was below quote okay thank you and that moves us to 7a child justice and advocacy update good evening governing board members dr lewis and members of executive team on right now and michael zepeda michael zepeda is our teacher who is currently teaching sixth grade at mackin and once his substit once his replacement is secured then he will be able to shift into the child justice and advocacy position at mackin go ahead and take a seat and as you can see we have some students with us tonight some were not able to attend for various reasons but many were invited so in terms of access diversity equity and inclusion through child justice advocacy there are many ways that we support the district's strategic plan i'm having a technical issue i'm sorry there we go so first of all as as our governing board president had noted earlier the creighton community is absolutely committed to advocating for equity equity injustice identifying and eliminating internal oppressive systems and ensuring access to learning opportunity and success for all students and that is part of our strategic plan goal equity and social emotional learning are interconnected and when students are regulated they're more likely to learn so when children are deregulated and not able to to manage their emotions they're not learning so by providing the supports that are needed so students can have coping strategies that can be used in the classroom and in other generalized situations that that makes a difference in terms of their learning and their ability to attend to the instruction and the learning episodes the sel task force had studied quite a bit of information in terms of the manner to move forward especially with social emotional learning and that was in response to covet 19 and yet we recognized that students often had struggled prior to covet 19 so this is sort of a wrap around opportunity for us and the investment in equity and social emotional learning was prioritized in using the pandemic relief funds which are commonly called the esser funds our district is a community creighton is a very small school community and yet the community has arms to wrap around all of us this is um this is a piece of writing from strum struck mull isquist and it speaks to community i am not self-made i'm community-made i'm land-made i'm ancestry-made i'm made up of everything and everything that made me exist outside of just myself and that is a beautiful way to think about our community and the impact that our children have and the impact that we have and the impact that we can continue to grow and develop to strengthen our school communities so there are six social emotional learning standards that you'll see that are projected currently we are in the first social emotional learning learning standard for this first quarter which is self-awareness the following quarter which will be our second quarter the end of the for the remainder of the semester is self-management followed by self-efficacy social awareness social management and social engagement so i'm going to drill down a little bit more into where we are right now so the sel task force reviewed a lot of different social emotional learning standards and landed on the washington state standards as those that closely align with with our community needs they are aligned with castle which is a collaborative for academic and social and emotional learning and the interesting thing about castle is castle's been around for some time and still interconnects the academic piece and the social emotional learning piece so if you take a look at the first standard that we have which is self-awareness it allows individual students to be able to identify their emotions their own personal assets areas for growth and potential external resources and supports and then we have a number of benchmarks that that drill down even further into into the detail as we move forward in terms of providing supports and instruction around social emotional learning benchmark one speaks to self-awareness and understanding of one's own emotions and our own emotions influence on behavior benchmark 1b uh demonstrates awareness of purpose personal and collective identity including encompassing strengths areas for growth aspirations and cultural and linguistic assets and benchmark c demonstrates self-awareness and understanding of external influences including culture family school community resources and supports so with social emotional learning engagement we have a few ways that we can approach the social emotional journey that our students take first of all our curriculum design studio got together this summer first time that i had an opportunity to meet with them and they did a phenomenal job so on the curriculum dashboard what we developed is we developed them and added them to the curriculum dashboard through unit guides our ela and sel integrated lessons using our existing curriculum so we're not purchasing another curriculum it's our existing curriculum with wonders and study sync so our hope is that our teachers have that access to to those lessons and we we hope that they're able to provide instruction on a minimum of one lesson and if they can two lessons we have two lessons per grade level created and it all depends upon the teacher teachers have autonomy to either teach a lesson a whole lesson or they can chunk it out as they choose to a second a second way to learn about social emotional learning is the boys town social skills so the boys town social skills are very simple social skills and they range from very simple to more complex as students are a bit older the social skills are available on our district website under uh under resources for staff there's a there's a small um instructional video that billy mayne prepared for us and there are a number of those those posters and lesson plans that you can teach in your own class so if you have for instance difficulty with students who are asking a question there's this particular social skill that you review your you teach the lesson you review the skill and then you post it in the room and when students struggle they can go back to that in order to follow through with that social skill not all students need those skills but it's it's good solid explanation and expectation of what we expect in the classroom and what we'd like to happen in the classroom but the teachers have the choice to choose what best meets the needs of their students and in addition to that with culturally responsive practices we have youth youth equity stewardship with students and staff and we know that those are coming up very soon depending upon the buildings that they will be rolling out very quickly and our deep equity workshops with leadership and site equity working group facilitation teams and as a matter of fact our child justice advocates are also a part of those working teams so at this time i'm going to ask haley to come forward good evening members of the board good evening members of the community um i've really enjoyed spending my first month at biltmore prep academy building relationships with students staff and families and i've worked especially one of the students providing check-ins working in small groups with students as well as popping into classrooms so pictured here i have two students that i've had the privilege of working with one-on-one the first student is a first grader who was feeling a little bit anxious about entering her classroom every day so as a team we developed a plan to support her and you know integrating into her classroom joining and building that community so part of this plan is that she would spend her first 10 minutes of the day really just helping her regulate so we've referred to this as her calm down time so we worked on various breathing exercises we were reading some books about emotions pictured here she's doing a modified yoga pose and again just to support her and feeling comfortable joining her classroom and the second photo is a second grade student who we also met as a team to develop a plan to support him and part of his plan is that he is given three 10-minute break passes so he has to you know communicate with his teachers that he needs a break and then he spends that time either with me or our school psychologist and pictured here he's um choosing his break to work with fidgets and then in addition to working with students one-on-one i've also had the privilege of working with our school psychologists to facilitate lunch bunch groups so these are every wednesday we invite students to join us for their lunch and recess time where we can just focus on you know building relationships as well as working on some social and emotional skills thank you all can i ask a question linda certainly um so it seems like and dr lewis and i talked today and i she wants to hear from the board if we're heading in the right direction and and get feedback and i thought i got the gist of this a little bit last year but it seems like we really are focusing on kids sel kids equity kids understanding controlling their emotions but it doesn't sound like there's any focus on teacher and culturally responsive teaching practices and how teachers recognize the importance of equity and how that impacts how kids are acting um and that and recognizing that if they're in trauma they may act out very badly potentially um and that you know changes the relationship between the teacher and the kid and and just basically can blow up right like that's that's one of the problems we face so is that something our advocates are able to do in the classroom in addition to the work they're doing with kids certainly so tonight we focused on on our student interactions so you would have an idea kind of a snapshot of of how we work with our students but in addition to that and it's only the first month of school so the first two weeks for those of you in education the first two weeks you are running running running running and so just now our groups are settling down as kaylie said that she and her psych are doing lunch batch and small group so we first of all we need to take care of the students at this point so as we do that work we we have conversations with teachers because typically when a meltdown occurs in a classroom it's not about the teacher it's about the student and so we are talking about restorative practices as well and and i know that um dr wells will talk a little bit about the empowerment room that he's going to share with you so there are lots of ways for us to work with staff as well in terms of recognizing that behavior is communication and ultimately it's identifying what is the communication and that's part of our responsibility is to identify what the situation is and i i understand you know what what you have shared about having damaged relationships with staff in this particular scenario we have supports not only for the the students for the family members but also for our staff so if if a teacher is struggling with a child's behavior immediately we have an opportunity to go have a conversation perhaps do observation of the student collect some data and then begin to have a conversation with the child and that's very helpful for us because unless the the teachers or the psychologist or someone else in the campus lets us know that there might be a struggle we wouldn't know and our cj's are everywhere they're they're duty they're doing a lot of different things but they also justify their time to one-on-one check-in check-outs small group support and then also collaborating with other teachers with instructional coaches with admin almost all of our our cj's are on a leadership team special ed team meetings mtss meetings and in that way we can we're we're bringing the message and and support for teachers as well because teaching has never been an easy profession but in times like these where we know that our students are struggling our families absolutely are struggling i echo everything that has been said so far our goal is to be able to support our students support our teachers but also support our families so there are a lot of ways that we can also support the families so when we're talking about um a child doing the yoga poses sometimes that's going to work at home when a child has anxiety they may need a stress ball things like that so there are those interventions that we can talk about as well i hope that did i answer your question yes okay thank you so much okay so monica will you come up i forgot my laptop um my name is monica uh i am the newest cga for the korean academy and the the crane virtual academy uh as you may have heard today has been my first day um like a full report it's been it's been very informative um the environment right when i stepped in i met with uh principal cartier and she's very welcoming um she really makes you feel like she's giving you your her most one-on-one attention um and i i i know i definitely have a lot of questions and she you know she sat there patiently she listened she she gave me some support um i also had my first meeting with the cga cj cj team and it was just amazing to be in a room where you know my teammates they're very supportive they're very um creative and you could just tell by all the conversations that they're having um all the different uh resources and skills and implementations that they're that they're using you can really see and hear the passion i'm really excited to be a part of a team that is really striving towards you know building social emotional skills um because you know social emotional skills are just as important as kids learning their their numbers their letters um it's really the building blocks the foundations of a strong adulthood so i appreciate it thank you good evening my name is lisa constine i am the child justice advocate at excellencia school at excellencia i work closely with students to address their social and emotional needs through our cares program we also work hard with restorative practices to make sure that when damage is done to a community everyone feels safe and empowered moving forward one program we are especially proud of is our excellencia ambassadors which is a leadership group made of mostly middle school students to help with conflict resolution welcoming new students and strengthening peer expectations and i brought two with me this evening hi my name is shayla bernal i'm in eighth grade and i've been in excellence here for nine years i'm representing excelencia ambassadors by being a part of the ambassadors my role is to make students students and visitors feel welcome and safe i help by informing them about our school rules and about what's happening around campus we also understand students emotions and all students are different and they are unique in their own way for example teachers and teachers and fast learners help students that have trouble learning the curriculum being taught hi um hi i'm mr guru i've been um where i represent uh excellency ambassadors is by helping new students making them feel welcome maybe at lunch letting them sit with me if you know if you don't know anybody yet you know yeah you can see what means fine you know letting them know our rules like what you can't do or you could do you know like you know formulas then you know some new students maybe not know that like last week we had new students you know i showed them around campus and told them if you want you can see with me or you know they didn't know what classes to go to so they just followed you know like you know so um thank you okay i want to be a new student taken around by the ambassadors uh hi i am currently i'm working with the district office but i work currently uh housed at gateway so i am covering until we find that position um one thing that we're really working on at gateway is uh how we can find how we can use coping strategies as replacement behaviors and then how we can reinforce those coping strategies along the function that those kiddos are seeking so essentially if a kiddo if we're identifying it as attention or we're identifying as escape or those different things then when we reward them using their replacement behaviors their coping strategies we need to reward it along that same function so rewarding it with attention rewarding it with a break rewarding it um with the tangible items that you know maybe the pbis bucks and things like that can get you as you see in the picture i have a number of tools that i give to students and those are also tools that i give to the teachers so we have little coping strategies that i work on with the kiddos one on one in my classroom but then i take them back to the teacher and so they have a pack for themselves and then they have a pack that the teachers have and then i have a conversation with those teachers about how they can be reinforcing those kiddos using those strategies and then how they can fade those so they become more self-management type strategies um you also see a picture of me in one of the classrooms and this is where um i call them emotional dragons it's just because of a game that i happen to have that goes along with this but the different kind of dragons that can kind of take over and kind of choose your choices for you and then they kind of disappear when your consequences show up right and so that was me going into the classrooms and talking about the different emotional dragons but then also i provided seven example coping strategies just so that not only the kiddos had you know a sense of what we'd be working on but so that the teachers were really hearing about how those coping strategies can be implemented and how they can kind of start prompting kiddos in the classroom on those different strategies thank you good evening um my name is timothy wells and i'm the child justice advocate at kennedy at loma linda i've been tasked with running our school's empowerment room the apartment room is part of a larger effort towards a restorative approach restorative justice approach of um managing student behaviors um to shift away from thinking about misbehavior as simply an infraction or in violation but also but towards thinking about it as a rupture of a relationship so we have our empowerment room for um students that might have been referred uh to the office or misbehaved or had some sort of um difficulty with a peer or their teacher and they come to the empowerment room and we do projects so projects the idea of the project is that it's restorative centrally so it might be learning about a particular issue or it might be learning about apologies or making apologies and script and walking students through that process um and yeah so we think about that as part of just a broader school-wide initiative towards restorative um justice approach and um yeah that's essentially what i've been doing good evening madam president good evening all the board members of all the community thank you so much for having me i'm melissa anne fisher i am the child justice advocate for monte vista and it has been a real pleasure being here and being able to be in this community um a lot of my colleagues have already talked about we are there to infuse social emotional learning but at all levels in the beginning as we're there as dr um and dr mckeever said in the beginning it's it's a little crazy in the beginning of the year and so you're putting out a lot of fires and so it starts very individual in the beginning because we're trying to rebuild the community after a pandemic those sorts of things and still start there but ultimately the goal is to infuse the social emotional learning at all levels from the teacher down to the students and into the community as a whole because we could all use it especially in times like this and so for what i'm doing right there this is just a product of what we're doing for the first month and that was what i would call a schedule break this particular student has a lot of trouble adapting in the classroom especially in the mornings because he's got a lot going on he wants to talk about a lot of things and i'm sure that teacher wants to talk to about those things but she's got a classroom full of students and so that's where i step in is i take the work that he's learning on a schedule break let him talk to me a little bit in the beginning so we can get some of those things out and then we move right into the learning then i take him back to the class and reacclimate him back into the class restore him to the teacher i really enjoy getting to work with students in all types of capacities the different photos you see up here on the screen right now kind of touch on a lot of the different topics that we've discussed as well some of the concerns expressed by some of the board members here this evening as well so far up here on the screen in the bottom left you see a student working on an apology like dr wells had talked about earlier this is an apology that's not just a forced apology where a student is asked to write a letter in a punitive way it's a conversation it's a time taking process that really allows them to understand what has happened how it's affected them their relationships with themselves others and their teachers a group as a whole in the top right corner actually i'm going to skip that one for a moment because roy's going to touch on that one in the bottom right corner is a student who in the first few weeks of school was really having a tough time getting to class if there was more space on this slide you would see exactly how i found him in on our campus which was curled up in a ball crying because he was having a tough time transitioning into his classroom this year so what we did is we through conversation found that hey why don't we go and talk to some of the older grade students and when we got to the class they were really engaged so instead of talking with those older students we sat back and he observed these students doing student type behaviors he as a second grader was able to look at sixth graders in the classroom and note that hey this is a good student i'm going to go give them praise for x y and z and so he was going up to each and every student giving them stickers letting them know that he recognizes them as good students as well and what's great about that is now that student has somebody who he knows from the older grades and can look up to as well and vice versa they have somebody who they can look out for in the younger grades in the top right corner is a community circle tough to tell by the picture but a community circle nonetheless where we aim to build community amongst ourselves in a more proactive approach and that is what roy is going to speak to us about uh hello uh this community circle is about the sixth grade classroom which i was in uh we're talking about stuff we did in the cafeteria oh we did something bad by not picking up our mess so we had one we all felt guilty and after that day we picked up our mess and we had another one that we did a good job thank you for your time i'd like to just jump in on roy's behalf there roy's definitely talking about community circle done to restore the community relationship do you remember what this question was roy uh who inspires you who inspires you uh a lot of people were saying a lot of stuff but my question is who inspires me was my family they helped me a lot and my friends the they helped me a lot during like bad times during the test like you can do it then one of my friends just jumped in and say oh uh here's what you got to do on the map problem he helped me out on that and that's how i got a good grade on that math test so community circles are all about helping your environment and your friends build up courage to have friends knowledge and know what you're supposed to do thank you to mr mayne and mr zepeda because they showed me how to be a good kid you're better than a good kid you're an amazing kid can we have a round of applause for these students and jas you have any questions for us i'm wondering how our advocates work with assistant principals or or principals when it comes to discipline issues because they must have are they're building relationships um so how does that work so first of all first and foremost um through camp creighton those of uh those individuals who were able to participate in camp crate because i was still hiring up to that point they recognized that building relationships is the most important thing that we can do with our students with our staff with our administrators so when we have a child justice advocate at leadership team meetings at as at the leadership table there's opportunities to talk about what's happening with within the building and oftentimes it can be a one-off you get a call on the radio you go meet with your administrator they identify what the behavior was and sometimes it's a situation where the cja may take that child who's highly escalated help them de-escalate in a private spot in an office or in a place like the panther den for instance so that they can be able to be more regulated before they write their due process and we offer support in in helping them get to that point so ultimately that's an opportunity to support a kiddo because when i was a dean of students and when i was an assistant principal or principal i didn't have the i didn't have the staffing for that and so what that does is it provides a trusting ad adult that most kids have seen the teachers or the cjas but not all of them know them so once they start to learn about what we do and what we have to support them um and just the language that we use and the manner in which we talk with them everybody makes mistakes everybody does and it's a learn it's an opportunity to learn so we help them to take that opportunity to learn and not to be so hard on themselves in themselves simply because everything that's in our head doesn't mean it's true and so that allows for some calming more understanding as they're writing their due process statement adding the details that they need to and oftentimes that allows an apology or a restorative conversation to take place so there are lots of ways and in addition to that when you're looking at larger episodes of behavior there are many ways that that we're offering support for instance we have a student who is at gateway who had an incident last week that was a serious incident and a dcs was involved at the end of it and we weren't sure what was happening with the child so as soon as we got into the building um today i popped into the office found the student was there which was wonderful and so had a conversation with him and he is doing kind of an in-school suspension and so two of the days the the student will be in in the child justice advocacy space because that way we can not only help him with his learning because he needs to complete his missed work but we have conversations about what happened what are some who are people that you could turn to when you're upset like this what are some different ways to approach this and already between dr magnus and i we've had multiple conversations with this young man on the day that should have been i mean two hard hits two hard hits that day dcs and then a major infraction he came back to us on on on tuesday morning and he was calm he was doing his work we had conversations he explained a lot i jumped into his qm file was able to get more information so already we're starting to talk about what his assets are and he's not stuck in that deficit thinking piece he's now talking about and thinking about his assets and we're going to have him do a restorative project as well and um i assume you have access to um like southwest behavioral health and and solace yeah okay absolutely great thank you any other questions i have a couple questions sorry feature um so the cgas are they teaching lessons only in certain classrooms or are they like scheduled to come in to class so it's kind of up to the teachers so i know that some of the cjas have gone into their classrooms when teachers have the time because again the first month of school it's a little dodgy um and if we had if we had a rainy day schedule or we have a heat schedule it changes so teachers we will not go into a classroom until a teacher says this is a good time so i know that andrea had gone into classrooms done an introduction the kids know who she is they approach her in the hall etc so we have that piece and then when it comes down to teaching the lessons we have what's in the curriculum dashboard with the the um the unit guides and and the the social emotional and ela integrated units but if there's a need for support uh cja can co-teach one of those lessons they can also come in and co-teach if they need to and help run a community circle if there's if there's an issue that has happened in a classroom where everyone needs to kind of have a conversation and to be able to talk about what has happened and so you can do you can do it in a community circle or if there's a request for a lesson and sometimes it's nice because the teacher is going to want you is going to want to stay in the classroom to observe because sometimes we have a feeling i was a middle grades teacher i was a secondary person sometimes we believe that you know perhaps the message needs to come from someone else in order for me to understand how to take that forward so there are lots of ways to either co-teach model instruction there are lots of ways to provide that support all right so my second question kind of has to do with that okay so you were talking about the lessons that the teachers are giving based off the curriculum maps that you guys have um how are we ensuring that they're actually using and teaching the lessons with fidelity to this curriculum i will say that that that is a school level expectation because we so so i i'm training i'm hiring and i do a lot of the work but in terms of following through that's i would say that's more likely a building level administrator follow through and we could survey as well and it and it is a tough thing to begin with because you have a lot of curriculum we have a new math adoption that's why we basically gave a real gentle um release so please do one lesson don't expect to if you can do two do two but if not do your one and if you're not sure get a hold of your cja we can co-teach remodel it kind of building off of that um do you guys have plans on maybe working with teachers for professional development during the wednesday plc's absolutely there are a lot of ways that we can work with them one that i'm excited about is we do have a crisis prevention intervention training but the de-escalation piece is what teachers need so when you have when you have the time to do de-escalation training and it might take a few wednesdays you have the tools in your in your pocket and if if you're educators you recognize that because just the verbal de-escalation is usually enough and only when when we are in a situation where whether a child is a danger to himself or others would we go with forward with more of a hold or restraint i hope that makes sense perfect that's always how does helping and as we're as we're developing and as we're developing further as as the questions come forward we're absolutely happy to do professional development well i think it'll be good too kind of building off you know so we're making sure it's not one and done and so teachers i feel like at the beginning of the year everybody gets all this training and then it's like brain mush so having i'm just excited that you guys have representation at every site so that it can you know even if it's a 15 minute bite size at the staff meeting you know want to remind you know let's talk about the language things like that and we'll also be popping in and doing some observations we'll observe students and and identify what may be working for them and what they might need to help them be more regulated so there are a lot of ways for us to offer support and if teachers are open to be able to coach them to help them a bit in that way and and teachers are fairly open they are because ultimately um this is this is our responsibility we have academic interventions these are social emotional interventions that can support all of our students and again we'll be working with community ed as well to provide some some additional supports for um for adult ed as well further questions i have a comment i guess um i've just recently gotten feedback that there's a lot of kids um saying they identify as binary or they them recently and like even little kids who probably don't even understand what that means you know i don't know that we all have the same understanding of what that means but that some teachers are offended by using these pronouns um and i think this is low-hanging fruit but um i just think that can be a conversation too because it fits in equity and seal for the kids who want to do that and for my daughter you know she almost all of her friends identify would like to use the pronoun they and sometimes there's nothing behind it and most of the time it's none of our business what's behind it but they want to be a they to be supportive of their peers um and so my daughter convinced me to to use my pronoun yeah i said why do i need it on my email if i'm just a she her you know like obvious um she said it's supportive because someone who's out there who isn't quite ready to step out yet or do whatever you know do whatever they need to do to feel like they belong in this world you're sending a message that you're supportive of them you don't have to approve of whatever is going on behind closed doors it's not really anyone's business anyway but i think i think this is a trend that is not going away and the only thing i can think to compare it to is like the miz that i never i've always used miz i've never had to think about it and like why would i tell someone i'm mrs or miss that's that's none of your business mister who you have won you know you have one choice so i think you know the misses and miss could probably have gone away but i think the they thing is here to stay and it's for a variety of reasons and i think i'd like people to not be so offended by it because it's fairly harmless like my mom is offended because she's an english teacher and she's a grammar nerd and so we're still working on her and so am um so i just got that that feedback recently and thought again low hanging fruit that's a conversation should be an easy conversation to have and that will be probably around the equity piece um i've not heard anything yet but it doesn't mean that it hasn't already surfaced at any of our schools and if it has i trust my child justice advocates to most likely agree with with they as the pronoun it's not a when you refer to one person as they it's plural not singular so i understand your mother right yeah okay also just a quick minor thing yeah this is textural um we have a link on our presentation to see like the boys town social skills but we need access that's because the link is for um staff it's under staff resources but i'm sure that we can get that taken care of if you'd like to take a look governing board members we can get that to you in an update so you'll be able to see thank you thank you again for your time thank you and thank you for your thoughtful questions thank you all thank you team thank you linda we appreciate this work i just want to acknowledge that everybody just jumped right in to i think this is our fourth week of school jumped right into where the needs were the most evident there's lots of layers lots of opportunities with this work we're very excited we also have an eye towards sustainability so what we've accomplished in the last month we're thinking about when we get an opportunity once again to rewrite for school safety grants and how to reframe that toward the social work justice advocacy components that we've seen here so we're seeking those measurable pieces we want to show impact and really be able to carry this work forward past the end of the esser period so lots of opportunity very grateful thank you all thank you thank you that takes us to 11b discussion on a three-year calendar adoption for school year 23 to 25 session chavez observation i'm sorry i did totally miss it 11 8 discuss and consider proposed revisions to governing board policy hb board meet and come for agent first reading so good evening madam president members of the governing board uh we uh miss kelly blakesly uh president of cea is also available she's not available in person this evening but she is available on the webex should you have any questions we work collaboratively to look at the current meet and confer policy with a lens on flexibility for timelines clarification on the one team approach and then adding in some language on the final agreement for uh cea practices that were already in place but uh wanted to formalize that so we stand ready to answer any questions yes um okay um why the changes to the policy in the first place um what are we accomplishing that we couldn't before all right thank you uh madam mcshuffrey and uh governing board so the ms makeshift sorry [Music] i am showing my age uh so there was a question about reconfig reconvening the meet and confer team to look at some recommendations and when we reviewed the policy and because the timelines were set in the policy we felt like moving that to a regulation where it's more flexible would uh give the meet and confer team and the team in general because remember the team last year may not be the same team as this year to add the flexibility of bringing the team back together and then um last year some of the feedback we got was um some of like the budget advisory committee maybe said thumbs down on some of the stuff that came out of meet and confer which appeared as i was overruling meet and confer are we avoiding that scenario with this new policy so i i don't know that the policy addresses what we used to call the bouncing balls of the meet and confer process and the intent there was for inclusion of you know budget experts as well as the compensation committee with the benefits and uh salaries so i'm not sure that that addresses that uh okay issue but we want our experts to be able to to have a voice and include more voices at the table okay so i know that is something that we might want to address at some point maybe it doesn't belong in this policy but i know that it felt like the policy was watered down by kind of that practice of having obviously we can't do it if it's not sustainable but it seems like there was more going on than just that the sustainability became maybe subjective based on who you talk to so um i think that's still a concern and so i don't know if it's fixable in the policy but something we might want to fix in practice um something maybe just have a statement in regulation right yeah so that this policy isn't watered down yeah by other committees depending on who's sitting on the committee and how strong the voices are um that the idea is that this is the mean confer policy is a policy we have in place so a budget committee um i can't remember all the even the names of all the different committees but there were two through you know compensation somehow it felt that those at times had us a stronger and louder voice in the process i don't know if anyone else has thoughts on that on how no i think i don't have a magic solution but i think maybe it's some kind of statement in regulation just something about how does that communication intertwine like we want the experts on all the the micro work that all the committees are doing maybe something about how that communication like flows into the meet and confer process i don't have the magic words but i think i agree with you just some clarification so when we do our like meet and confer in our we don't have other committees like that um that's just wasn't our practice i'm not saying that shouldn't be here neither here nor there but usually what happens is like the president is the one that starts gleaning information from its members and well actually from everybody because we don't we don't leave out anybody um when we're doing meet and confer um but we do a lot of like surveys and things like that to gather information on like what budgets look like and and literally we do budgets very last in our meet and confer until we know like what kind of money is coming in and then we just and then we like have that conversation um i thought it was a little weird like that's just not my experience of doing that first because usually we don't have the legislation done by that time um so my recommendation would be to wait um until the end to discuss budget if there's a budget committee maybe have some of those members sit on that to maybe put their input in like maybe kelly wants to sit on that or maybe another member wants to sit on that to um you know to have that conversation with kelly or maybe she has a meet up with that person so they're kind of on the same page um i would have to take a look at like why do we have the budget committee and then what are they working on versus like what is meet and come for working on so i'm not gonna say we shouldn't have one um or we shouldn't have one i guess we need to look into that um but i definitely would recommend waiting until the end because i think it got a little ugly this year and then there was some more money that came out later so it was kind of weird i would wait um we always wait and have one last meeting about budget so um that might clear up some problems um as far as the policy i it looks a lot um i i think it's a lot more flexible um and i'm really glad that you two work together to um accomplish something together because that's kind of how it should be so i'm glad that kelly was able to work with you um and to get some change to become a little bit more flexible because that's what this committee should be it should be a flexible working committee so i appreciate that policy too like we don't yeah we know we're growing and this is a new policy but we also don't want to have to come and fully revise it all the time like right we want to have clear expectations for the process and but without like you said like what needs to be sustainable we don't have to go back and say well this didn't work with our policy let's revise the policy every time so i appreciate the collaboration as well well and i think it's if we need to update the policy once a year or so until we get it right if everyone's really happy with it then that's okay too um so maybe that's something everyone can just kind of keep in the back of their mind if if the budget committee is interfering i mean initially that was created to just have more voice when we're doing budgets and it not just be again behind closed doors so um you know it's not mandatory that we have a budget committee i i like it um i'd like to see more community members on it we did have more um kind of a few years ago um i think the more heads in that room the better you know because you do get some good ideas about things um so those are just my thoughts and it's getting like i said all that all the micro work all the little numbers all the this from here and this pocket and this this pocket and being able to come to me and confer and say here's what's available and from where and mean confer has you know brains thinking about what are the needs of our staff you know what do we have from our surveys and here's what we have to work with in you know here's our framework any other comments for questions okay all right and that brings us to 11b discussion of the three-year calendar adoption for school year 23 to 25 server so travis observation any takers yes madam president members mr denault do we have the apple tv in the meantime we'll be joined by mr gutierrez and mr diaz members of our calendar committee now what we're going to be discussing this evening actually seeking some guidance around the parameters that have been in place to get us to where we are in our existing calendar structure the considerations for a possible redesign redevelopment of the calendar structure to incorporate some of the ideas and feedback from from our board members could you use the code i did 744 what seven four four six six thank you okay momentarily so once again a bit of the background in terms of the parameters that created the calendar were in and considerations for moving for forward for possible redevelopment so diaz either um so uh i i don't know how far back it goes i want to say 2018 or 19 or so not exactly sure um when the committee first came together by dr peterson uh we went through the process and gathered input from a variety of different stakeholders and different places that went to community council uh dr peterson walked through a process at the tables and gathering feedback from people from the community we had surveys and so this is sort of a representation percentage-wise of what that uh what that how that came about and uh that background uh historical aspect of it and then the next slide we after getting that feedback and it's a fun fun process being on the calendar committee no matter what happens someone's always upset about something or happy about something else but we kind of willed it whittled it down to uh these uh bullet points that you see here um and having the uh considerations that we came up with for the actual uh calendar itself and then that's kind of the historical background for it so those surveys were done when i believe that's what i was trying to think of the date um the community council i want to say was the surveys i believe were done at the end of the year like around april may um and uh they were uh sent out uh uh through uh through the um to all staff and all community members to get feedback from that way too okay so we also got feedback from teachers from different sites as well at that time so our staff is turned over a lot and i think we have a much better ways of effectively effectively surveying families than we did back then so just a comment yeah that's true they're used to google forms at this point all right so next up are some possible additional considerations when we're looking at a redesign is we're in year two of the three year uh so any uh additional things that we want to look for would be for the 23 24 school year some of the things we can look at is applying culturally responsive practices to celebrate the progress and honor the diversity of cesar chavez day indigenous people day and any of the other sacred observance periods one of the big things that we want to look at is maintaining the budget neutral neutrality one of the pieces we've always looked at is if we add days uh it goes into memorial day and then we have to pay people for memorial day so that's definitely a cost that we as you saw with the budget that we can't handle right now we want to make sure that we are feasible with the alignment with the funding and the payroll and then we want to look at alternative models to help enrich our students and our families in la like ms mcshappy said make sure we're honoring the staff and students next is some a timeline that could be uh based off of the action that you will decide to take tonight is in september through november we could reconvene and expand the calendar committee because it's pretty much a small committee over the past few years mr d is about five of us but it's a smaller committee um and then you know research and develop other models for calendar structures uh we there's so many new ways that you mentioned that we can reach out to families we have new staff we want to engage students parents and staff through feedback you know continue to use community council looking at google forms various surveys through the creighton kids congress then in february discuss any recommendations with the governing board for possible action and then in march publish the updated calendar by spring breaks questions for us so in conclusion we have a we have a calendar that's in place when you're two of a three year so we have a calendar for next year however if it's the board's desire for the calendar team to come back together we can put together some options for changing that calendar up we're not stuck with the calendar that was adopted for the coming school year we could put back some recommendations off following on this timeline so when we voted on this um i didn't love the calendar but i was sort of in the minority i guess i mean no one like had super strong feelings like i did about the um extra day of spring break and fall break we've eliminated one of those but that's still a big inconvenience for parents having that extra uh day off it's like a teacher and service day and it doesn't align with phoenix union um uh that's always been an issue and i always thought i mean having the wednesday of um thanksgiving off would be nice for teachers because um you know yeah i have it obviously that was a very believe it or not a very controversial yeah um because some like i said any time with the calendar committee there's always real it's it's like yeah naming a school there's a lot of passion behind that and that was believe it or not a very controversial thing and the committee at the time supported the idea but when the surveys came rolling in it said a different thing yeah well then your parents very fascinating then parents have to have their kids at home and try and get ready for thanksgiving so but again we've had a lot of turnover um you know so i mean there may be different thoughts so i would like to see us uh and at that time i was told no big deal we can update the calendar next year and obviously we didn't we haven't done that so i think it's a great idea and a great time to reconvene and expand the calendar design team to take some of those things into consideration and obviously we can recognize days um and not make them a holiday but i do think that we're a little out of sync with our community and not having cesar chavez day um you know my kids school had a jewish holiday off instead of good friday you know it's to each your their own you know i mean um i think we're more in sync if we align with what phoenix union is doing that's my thoughts yeah i mean i think like you said some of this stuff gets far more controversial than you would think it would um but i know like there are other phoenix union district like i want to keep that alignment with phoenix union um but not just the high school but also our surrounding districts um so like i know in vaults we added cesar chavez day for this current year we're in um we have the wednesday before thanksgiving off so they masked it out it works um but again kind of going back like we're all going to have our own opinions about these days um but i'm interested like i definitely want to see us reach back out to the community and see what does the community want what do the staff members want um and make decisions from there so i'm excited to see work picking up on this again and i want to make sure we do recognize say there are some jewish holidays that we do not recognize and if there are kids that you know need to be home for those i i certainly hope that we are recognizing those holidays and also muslim holidays too you know um so i i would like to see an awareness of you know if we don't take the day off let's make sure it's on the calendar so so staff are aware if we have muslim kids fasting you know what they're dealing with you know yeah i think yeah building on that like having the observances listed on the calendar i think is huge um even not just for the students but i know like staff members where a major pd or required training is scheduled on a jewish holiday and you know and so it it's a little thing to put these observances on and it's not saying we're taking the day off but it does put it front and center for everybody to be considerate when we're planning things for our staff when we're recognizing that we have children and families and staff members who might be fasting so i think little things like that is really key one year we had veterans day on a sunday and we had school the next day and people thought no big deal and like three quarters of the school was absent because they thought well we weren't supposed to do that so those those types of calendaring conversations i think yeah and some of it like i said is literally just let's add the words of observance we're not taking it off or making sure that everybody's aware of everything that's been observed and everything that everyone's going through during those times i think the discussion needs to be had on how we deal with it moving because like in my district we don't necessarily take it on stage our chavez day because it does move it's not like a fixed day so that's something to also consider because i was looking up like next year it's on a sunday i think this year is probably on a saturday but then it moves this year it's on a friday a friday okay march 31st yeah march 31st you didn't say the day but did the the 20th well i'm sure we can see how they handle it phoenix union and other yeah i mean we move ours yeah it's not necessarily on that yeah yeah so the city of phoenix recognized that as march 31st so it should always be march 31st yeah and that's the problem that i have is if we're going to celebrate the day that we should take it on that day and not like a week later or a week earlier or something yeah march 31st is the phoenix no um holiday my mom are reading so such how this is the 31st so when we say such as such harvest day it would be march 31st so do city employees have the day off i'm just getting something okay so what i'm hearing just in terms of guidance for the committee when it reconvenes is cultural responsiveness to our community and their feedback as well as community representation to include the observances and perspectives that we know are here locally and then alignment with but i'm also hearing not limited to phoenix union and some of our feeders because we know that there's always going to be a little bit of variation and we'll need flexibility and i think the theaters have kind of started spring some of the feeders are more in alignment not necessarily with the high school so rather than let the high school drive like looking at all 15 districts there and being most in alignment if that makes sense and there's some neat opportunities potentially to explore you know what might intercessions look like what might you know adding a 200-day thing might that look like you know i'm not saying that's what would end up happening but these are opportunities to explore and play with the time that we have because the way we invest our time reflects our values we value learning we value community and we value um regular pounding over here yes did i say 300 days or two my heart fluttered it's like an extra twenty days there you didn't hear that from the board yeah yeah oh i'm sorry i would also like you to look into the wednesday because i think there's enough before thanksgiving i think there's enough districts that do that that you can look at their calendars definitely isaac does it so i mean i think it's quite feasible to look at that as well it's really helpful like if you if you ask your teachers um because i'm on the calendar committee in my district and we've asked our teachers and most of them do want it off because that's a travel day that they you know that they don't have to get a sub for otherwise they'll call out and travel on wednesday so it's it's been really it's it's kind of a religious holiday for us like we they always want to take it out like they want to say oh no wednesday it's like no you don't touch wednesday like that's just like yeah i think uh miss mcstuffrey is right we have a different staff now it's been like five years yeah um uh at the time the committee supported the idea but then the survey was like but it's five years later yeah well and i think you could also you know in the survey that you know this teachers would appreciate having wednesday off before thanksgiving period like what do you think you could leave that day a little bit bleeding pull there i mean but there's only 27 of parents that actually voted on that survey so i think we can do much better than i think we can yeah any other questions or comments no thank you right that brings us to future agenda items do we have any miss mcsheffrey um i don't but i do see the review of the title ix policy and regulations in here and dr lewis believes that's going to happen on the 20th so our next meeting says the 20th 20th my bad the 18th is prompt oh yeah um is michaela penny oh go ahead well just for sharing out after the law conference but can i do that during board report yes or it could be yeah it should be on the agenda ideal ideally it's a law conference yeah report or whatever yeah yeah yeah um no um i do have some future agenda items i'm gonna name all the ones but they all live under the same one so when i do it i'm gonna yeah but i'm gonna name the different ones um so i won on the feature agenda item all basically our dress code our student conduct or student discipline expulsion apology um policies they're basically all jic and i have some jk and jke and then i'll be more detailed in the email but they basically all intertwined together and we haven't revisit these policies and now with the what we the meeting that we had on saturday with the strategic plan pending and everything that's going on we really need to make sure that these policies are equitable and they're in line what we're doing in our strategic plan and they definitely need to be revisited so those are forthcoming all right and with that being said i'm motion we adjourn second all those in favor hi hi hi perfect thank you guys you

profsman doesn't need to be painted because it's less than 10 years old and then for 25 again the bigger projects there would be to replace the gym floor and the bleachers at kaler we've had some issues there in the past but they're working fine now and but it's something we want to keep on our radar and to potentially budget money for we're looking at potentially converting the playground to a parking lot at clark um but each year it seems how sometimes that's used more sometimes it's used less so there's no real hard need to do that at this point we always we for last couple years we've put money in the budget for the old special ed offices at home and um it is used now for in the special needs programs and they uh have a they take kids in there and do things but um we never know what's going to come up so we would have put some money aside just in case there's a need that comes up at holmen maybe a program moves there that we can renovate that area there are no immediate plans for what that would be done and that's why it's a few years down the road and then items um these would be items that cost 10 000 or more or estimated to cost 10 000 or more um everything costs more these days in the last year or two and so these are just based on the estimates that we have at this time in 2023 we're looking at a new maintenance trailer a new gator at clark a scrubber at bivich potentially a new delivery van and one of those snow removal tractors with the brushes at coleman to help clear snow and sidewalks in 24 potentially another a new maintenance van a new gator and a ride-along scrubbing machine and then a free 25 or uh additional riding lawnmower and a snow plow with a with a spreader i mean as you can imagine with the salt that our guys deal with each year those dump trucks go through a lot and the salt just eats it away so any questions on the capital plan as we've presented so far rob yes i have a very generalized question i'll admit it probably should be a question that bill ledger would answer but unfortunately he's not here i'm going to throw it out there and if you have any comment on it in terms of capital project plans they have cooling towers at a school like grimmer correct we do have cooling towers on i know on some of our buildings exactly how it works it might be all but i know on some okay and some of them i hear from time to time there's incidences of legionnaire disease found in similar facilities like in a veterans administration home and that do we have a monitoring process for these cooling towers that gives us advanced notice of any potential problem it just entered my mind i thought i'd ask i have no idea so that is a question for bill he is all mechanical and uh facilities we will relay that question to him and he will get an answer for you i thought since you might be paying the bill on such a i think okay i'll back off i know there is a little there is speaking of not to go off on a tangent but um those cooling towers sit on the roofs and they're subject to water evaporation right and so the towns work with not only us but all facile you know buildings in the towns that have those cooling towers to modify the water bills because what's going through the meter isn't necessarily because of evaporation and so forth but we work with them and it's it's all clean out there fair enough okay um next we're going to go over the bus replacement plan we are required to do a five-year plan this used to be 12 columns in 12 years but the law was changed just to make it a five-year plan now even though you'll see on the next few slides that we do list all of our 90-some buses on the list and so one of the things that has happened in the last year is this rise of bus prices 10 20 percent cost more for a bus now than what we even ordered a year ago at this time in fact most school districts across the state had to modify the order that they placed in september because of the rising cost that has come in from the manufacturers so we've increased the pricing here for 23 and 24 replacement costs because of just how crazy it is right now hoping that once the supply chains get back to normal and there we can get buses in a more timely fashion then the prices will decrease to the levels we've historically seen they go up every year um but instead of costing a hundred and twenty thousand dollars now we're looking like close to 135 140 per bus so um and we don't get any additional money for that you know so we have to make way and that's why we come up with a budget so um just scrolling through we have a list of all again 90-some buses i have it here at the end of 2023 [Music] to potentially add another mini white bus it wouldn't be replacing a curt one we i believe we currently have four but we're looking to potentially add an additional bus because one you don't need a cdl license to drive those and so maybe with the labor shortage and it being hard for us to find bus drivers and everybody to find bus drivers if maybe for some of those after school activities if a we can maybe ask the coach or if they're willing to to potentially drive a bus or someone in an office can drive that they get properly trained but you don't need to go get the full-fledged license so we're throwing out that idea that if we had another bus it might help open up some schedules or maybe there's even a small route that we can fit those kids on we'll see we also don't know what the time frame and the lead on that is for getting a mini white bus as compared to a regular full-fledged bus at this point so okay so now i'm going to get into the actual budget numbers so we have six funds that we establish a budget for our education fund operations fund our referendum operating fund and then we have three debt service funds and this is uh you see this every year uh this is what i call the 16 line statement because there's 16 lines and really that's the the basis for the the form on the dlgf site has been now changed but i do like this format better because it really shows you the computations so the first five lines you're estimating what your expenditures are going to be the following 12 month period of 2023 in this case how much you're going to need from july 1 through december 31st of this year and then on the lower half is okay well for example in our operations fund if we felt uh our need next year is 25 million we're going to have 13 million of expenditures for this six month period currently now so we have a need of 38 million so then it's like well how much cash did we have on hand at july one how much tax money are we going to get in december when everyone pays their taxes in november how much miscellaneous revenue is going to come in over the same time frame and then therefore well if we have 38 million in need and we have 25 million of what is already coming in then we need to raise how much money in order to have an operating balance and levy our taxpayers and in this case the operations fund would compete to a levy of 18 million dollars a little bit more than that our referendum phone would be 10.7 the education fund is zero because there is no tax levy formed our taxpayers for education fund that is fully funded let me phrase that not fully funded it is entirely funded by the state and uh we are at the mercy of the school funding form that we talked about earlier so our debt service funds those dollar amounts are very straightforward they're based on what is the debt that we have out there for common school loans that we do twice a year for technology it is based on geo bonds that we do it is the referendum capital fund is our referendum bonds that we sold in 2012 and what are our debt payments are there so these are all we make semi-annual debt payments and then these amounts here represent what our debt payment is going to be in calendar year 2023 and then just working the math down of how much money do we have now how much money do we need to raise as you know especially on these other funds we don't exactly know what is going to happen at the state for funding wise we don't exactly know what the assessed value is going to do so in order to protect ourselves we advertise high we don't expect to spend 66 million dollars based on what our current expenditures are however what if the state put eight percent more money in the fund formula um we don't know that but they may say hey there's eight percent inflation we want to put that money in well then that be an influx of money that we need that will have to us to be able to use and if i would put a lower number there then we wouldn't be able to spend more than that lower number so when it comes to the education fund and the operations fund and the referendum operating fund it is we advertise a little bit high just to protect ourselves to make sure that we capture all the dollars that can come to us so as a comparison um these were the advertised amounts in 2022 and these are the amounts i am seeking your approval for to advertise to advertise for 2023 we've slightly increased the education and the operations and the referendum operating fund as we do each year the debt service payments are higher here in for the debt service fund itself it went up 1.2 million dollars per year and that's because of the geo bonds we sold last year for the upcoming bivich project and so we said at that time that was going to cost approximately two cents on the tax roll and if you look down here it is almost exactly two cents higher as an advertised rate our pension debt fund is very close to what it was last year as is our referendum fund it's only a thousand dollars difference on this next slide shows just a little bit of historical um data for the past six years comparing what we advertised through this process and then once the dlgf actually certifies what the budget is based on the real av based on the actual revenue and what it is and you can see that this advertised rate even here last year when we advertised 92.33 the real rate came in at just under at 79 cents so here when we're advertising 94 the real rate will probably be somewhere in the low 80s but again we do it to protect ourselves and not leave any uh dollars on the table for that we can put them back into the classrooms um this is again just a similar data i'm showing the breakdown per fund historically and then the bottom chart shows how the assessed value of the properties in our district has increased over the last six years as shown by the red line on the bottom it is steadily increasing i'm expecting it to increase because there's actually like a two two-year lag on those assessed values it's based on home sales in 21 is what's going we are told now in 22 which will affect the av that we use for the budget in 23.

as we've seen home sales now even with rising interest rates are still booming and so we don't know what the trend is going to be but the says value has continued to increase which is good because as you can see on the bottom line our tax rate has stayed very steady and actually slightly gone down here in the last few years so so my recommendation is same that which appeared on the other forms is to have a budget estimate of 66 million for the education fund 25 million for the operations fund 12 and a half million for the referendum operating fund our debt service fund would be seven million seven hundred ninety four thousand four hundred sixty three the pension bond fund would be one million three hundred twenty seven thousand nine hundred thirty four dollars and the referendum debt fund 12 million 397 500.

again just a summary those budget estimates would then be posted into the gateway public access system we'll have a public hearing again at our next meeting on september 19th to go over the budget the cpep plan the bus plan and then we would adopt um formally at the board meeting on october 17th this is a little bit of a snapshot of what the state's gateway system looks like has those same numbers as listed below um it goes over the dates that we just talked about here here as well so um that's what i have so i will now turn it over to the board in case you have any questions about what was in your packet or what you saw on the screen at this time thank you rob before you sit down i just want to make a general comment i'm sure my fellow board members joined with me in complimenting you on putting together a wonderful bird's eye view and understandable with illustrations etc etc exactly where we're at well thank you and we do share the quarterly [Music] financial spreadsheet with you we want to be in the loop with with you all the time as we reported to you before we share that same spreadsheet with our cash flows we share that with our teachers using all the time because we are just open and transparent with them and with times are good we want to give as much money to them we'll go through that negotiating process here so um it's an open book for for the board and for the the teachers union as well and so i appreciate the compliment but i would also say that it is a complete team effort and it is getting input from you saw the facility side it's working with dr veraco mrs mucha and our curriculum directors because you know things have changed in the last few years we're adding this we're adding that we're addressing learning loss we're we're doing things and they'll come to me about hey can we find money for this we find money for this and yeah it's kids first and we need to we all work together so yeah i can put the spreadsheet together and i can put that but it's it's everybody so thank you again okay thank you so our buses the yellow ones they will continue to be anything that we order will still be the natural gas that were well we have been for we've been buying mainly propane propane excuse me um for the last many six eight six years or so we've been fortunate enough to get um grants to offset the cost it's it well who knows what it's gonna be now but it used to be about ten thousand dollars more for a propane bus than a traditional what used to be a diesel bus we were getting we got a state grant for two or three years that covered the cost of that and then we haven't gotten the state grant recently but instead we've been able to get money from the volkswagen v w environment settlement money pretty much serving the same purpose to put more energy efficient vehicles on the road and so we're getting grant money for that as well so talking with our mechanics i think last year i think it was seven propane and then the other three were traditional were gas buses we are moving away from diesel engines because they just harder for the mechanics to work on and there's just they're very time and you know not cost of cost effective where traditional gasoline wasn't available in buses until recently so we're always going to buy some gasoline buses because we got buses that are going pretty far distances and until you can pull up to any corner station and get a refueling a propane we need to have those buses that can go those longer distance that we know we can pull in and get so we still like that propane route our bus drivers really like them they're very safe they're quiet they start like that in the winter and so it's wonderful so is that the same for the white buses are they just gas the white buses we haven't bought white buses since i don't think we've bought a white bus since we started this propane program i don't know if that is an option for them or if those would be potential um just gasoline ones as well thank you sure and that's it any other questions all right so at this point i've just asked the board's permission to um allow me to advertise what was presented to you move that we um allow the advertisement of the 2023 budget we have a motion by dr medlin second motion second by mr marshall any other discussion questions hearing none all in favor aye aye motion passes thank you thank you 2022-09-08 Western Connecticut Planning Region, CT YouTube / BPS Video transcript source: youtube Board of Education Meeting · passage 1
good evening everybody um i'd like to call the regular meeting of the birthday board of education for september 7th 2022 to order uh as a first order of businesses justice for all [Applause] all right so we have five members of the board uh mrs greenstein and mr murphy had uh conflicts this evening joining us um so first on our agenda is introduction of the new certified staff members and see the wall in the audience but i can't wait to say hello but let me turn it over to you thank you mr belden uh this is absolutely uh has been a fantastic first week as you will hear later from the principles but we're really excited to get our new staff certified staff our faculty introduced tonight to all of you and each principal will come up to the podium and introduce the staff and allows the staff the faculty to come up give a little bit of a wave dr pepsoski is incorrect you don't have to give a full speech um but i did want to share because it's important for the public to be aware of the very rigorous hiring process that our faculty or the faculty goes through is from the posting of the job through the rigorous application itself that they must fill out through the resume review team that we have in-house the interview selection that goes on and then the three-step step interview process which is an initial interview and a second interview usually with a demonstration lesson or performance task and then a final interview which consists of two finalists that come to the assistant superintendent and i and then from there we actually have the right of refusal and so it is a very rigorous process um these folks have really demonstrated professionalism making a cut in brookfield we are always looking to hire the best most highly qualified teachers that are the best fit for workfield so we are very proud of them we're really excited about them no i don't want to forget significant reference checks and background checks as well i'm really proud of them i'd like to start with center school i think deb's over there if mrs ferriss could come up and introduce the team good evening i'm very excited to introduce three incredible new staff members to our amazing team over at center school so first i'd like to introduce our newly hired preschool teacher amanda andrade and i'd also like to introduce our remedial reading teacher sarah monaco and i'd like to also announce that we've had rebecca lyons joining as a social worker starting on september 19th and she's not able to join us this evening but a round of applause for her thanks dad dr pepsoski would you take photography so just echo dr brother a very rigorous process we had nearly 100 applicants so we had a great pool for mr jews and we are so thrilled to introduce the father of awesome people to yolini aries world language shailene baker shannon's coming from [Applause] casey bell second grade teacher an important collective fund to get her uh young friend our patriot jersey nicole dwell third grade teacher aaron einstein who gave me a glimpse sorry of my future who has three sons on three different teams playing in three different towns husbands away but she's still kevin mcnulty's our music teacher cannot be here tonight uh due to illness kayla o'sullivan the third grade teacher cindy phillips is a special educator who also couldn't make it uh she was very upset that she didn't have a conflict that you could know come as his needs okay i'm still going to keep him with recognition kelsey sullivan is our sro who was not able to be here tonight harry you will and i'm just taking the glimpse to make sure i didn't forget because dean renna gave me a very hard time all right dude i'm sorry are you feeling okay now with that feeling better it just said it's not a glimpse of your life it's a glimpse to your poor wife um i am very very excited many years we've i've had at least we've had five six seven eight nine stack through staff certified status said this year we only had a couple that we had to do interviews for we had more uh some of our non-certified staff but for our certified staff we have four teachers um i first like to introduce mary ellen powers as our occupational therapist [Applause] [Music] here that is a vhs alum right there very special we also have carol nielsen who is our school psychologist could not make it because she had a prior equipment tonight um but we wanted to make sure we recognize her we're very excited because last year we went a good part of the year without even being able to fill that position and we were able to fill it and we were stacked for that last person is we have one of our teachers out on lead for the year we hired jennifer o'connell who is brandon from sacred heart university and i told her she was a little nervous about this i told her about coming tonight and she couldn't because she lives in long island and she needs to get closer and she signed release tonight so i told her she had to do it because that was too far behind for her so she is our social studies for um [Applause] thank you dr barrel and get the sentiments of my colleagues and how excited we are with the process and the amazing number of applicants we have this year it was like it was quite refreshing um that we've had so many people interested but um didn't have to fill as many positions i felt the same way as dean i feel like i've been up here way too often uh in previous years but i am proud to introduce our new addition so i see over there bianca paolello she is our new school counselor i see kim rothen who's over there she's our new math and the red shirt cracker is josh de bella our new world language we have our new chemistry teacher sam varma and our new technology education teacher john new house owner joining us tom robbins but he is uh girl dad um [Applause] well on behalf of the board welcome to all of you it's i'm looking forward to a uh excellent year and uh only for a great night so congratulations on coming to brookfield and we'll meet my grandkids with you at central public especially so thank you all okay um but i do know everybody has a very busy life you can sit through the rest of our meeting if you'd like or you can get on and you know go do uh do whatever you need to do this evening so don't be shy take a second so okay let's move on with the agenda um the next up is i'm gonna switch so the next is our uh you bob uh why don't we start with i see mr belland why don't we start from the other side we're gonna left check the podium in there mark i'm sorry i want to start with first week reports uh from each of the principals it's a tradition here in brookfield and mr bolando will start with high schools thank you mark all right thank you dr grill it's a pleasure to go first which never happens seemingly in my role as high school principal so a great start to the school year just a couple updates in terms of enrollments since july we've had 16 withdrawals just so you know and 36 new registrations since the beginning of july uh that puts our numbers uh 12th grade 217 students that means we're down uh nine from the previous year from 11th grade moving to 12th grade we have 227 11th graders which is actually down three from when they were 10th graders uh we have 229 10th graders which is up to from when they were 9th graders and then only 199 9th graders so fewer than i expect it gives us to about 872 is what we're looking at right now uh special thanks to a bunch of people this is our opportunity and i know this is going to get redundant but thankfully there's not a ton of people sitting here but we really want to recognize the people that helped us as we got right into the school year so cindy wardman susan griffin and our school counselors jen julio deb birch bianca palello and caitlin mccabe for scheduling anybody who's ever done that work through the summer as a counselor and that's building a schedule knows how tough it is uh caroline angelo karen howard uc genovese reporting everything in the main office just going for the school year uh rosa hopkoff for handling to register our duties lisa zarya for staying on top of special ed services and ct said it's no small task um gladys cotto worked through the heat to rearrange the library uh this summer mary negri helping our athletic program get up and running uh cathy colavito uh seth greg and logan white certainly for everything technology not to mention eric but he gets his kudos other ways and uh our crystal deal maintenance staff did a great job with an aging building right um and they did a great job dave greg julio pedro leo ricardo brian and joe so kudos to them a few things about what's going on this year that i'm looking forward to we call it leveling up or raising the bar we certainly are bringing that to the table this year uh we have a new forensic science course two sections of that we're excited about we have the ilt our individualized learning time online scheduling system which will be coming online shortly uh three brand new bathrooms they look fantastic you know i've never been so excited about automatic flush here and all before we're getting back to psats and 9th 10th and 11th grade starting in october we have a fall ball coming um on october 1st to ease and allen excited that over the summer the board approved the civic social workers so we're excited to get that on board is that that's coming through nothing yet we have a school counseling intern for the first time in a long time so welcome to lily dickey we've also reclaimed some classroom space we rearranged the mail room much of the staff surprise and got some classroom space back which is great we're doing an adopt a bulletin board program [Music] updating attendance codes more accurate attendance tracking and we're bringing back midterms and final exams on certain levels which we thought was important from the staff and i'll give you my uh my my one funny anecdote i do have a show and tell here what you see is something that has been affectionately labeled as a lunchbox brought in by a student today this is actually the same student who also brought to lunch yesterday full-size watermelon in his backpack because he thought he might like it at lunch didn't have a knife for it but brought it and a spoon and didn't have the opportunity to eat it but you can imagine it was like carrying around a full-size watermelon for most the day um that came to us later on uh that same student then brought this today to school as you can see aptly labeled lunchbox um i took any identifying information off it so you wouldn't know who it was because the name was on there as well and inside the lunchbox is a um amazon you'll see like the amazon package right with cushioning and some tissues and [Music] an egg and i asked the student in my office you know they got sent to my office you can imagine a kid walking around the school with an egg what could possibly happen in a high school environment and the student said well i plan on giving to the cafeteria and they could cook it for me so that's interesting nowhere in your 11 year career after school have you ever imagined that you'd just hand over um and we got a conversation he admitted there was no ground beef or turkey or anything else in his bag he would you know or peppers to saute he was just planning and giving the egg and hoping that the cafeteria could cook him so we had we came to the agreement that tomorrow when he went to pack his lunch um that if it was too big to fit his bag like a watermelon don't bring it um it was something they could break and cause problems um don't bring it and if there's something that could end up in the assistant principal or principal's office to bring him to school don't bring it and he said he's going to bring peanut butter and jell-o so we're good for tomorrow thank you mr valencia much appreciated how about surrendering tell you a little bit um how who's gonna start the school year off again we will go through obviously uh so much work is done people don't realize the amount of work that's done in the background uh that has to be done to end the school year and then also to start the new school year as you know the amount of um ordering from materials scheduling state reports hiring of staff all these different things the amount of time it takes is really a lot so i want to make sure we thank our sec my secretaries we have mandy musco diane sierra solely lisa whalen is our new main office front office staff sandy reed and then also as you most of you know my special thanks to my secretary mary liz because she helps to keep me on track because i tend to see a squirrel and go in different directions so she always keeps me on track also special thanks to june and ed for all the work that they helped do this summer too i mean that crew of people right there um really put it all together so they were really awesome in doing that um to our staff that came in for interviews and and also very importantly the students that came in to do as uh dr brewer was talking about demo lessons um i did so we did the demo lessons and i told them when we get back to school i'm gonna give them the treat you know when they come back then ice cream so i asked another scene on the first day and then a couple kids go mr brenda she has to ask you something and i'm like she has a voice doesn't she and the student said mr randy where's the ice cream i'm like oh i totally forgot so i was at walmart at six o'clock this morning buying ice cream sheets which they absolutely loved and i didn't um custodians as always denis heil as a custodian but just all the work and time and effort they put in along with dan to get to get the building looking great and the amount of time that's put into that is will appreciate central office staff for helping us in the hiring process and trying to move it along as quick as possible i know we we sometimes try to push you to hurry up and get that person in for an interview because we want it is much appreciated to debbie jones from the bus company every year it happens we try not to happen that happens we had three that missed the bus this year um but debbie always is a trooper and she was able to get a bus to swing back around the kids so that was nice um before school started we we had some of our mandated training team level grade level meetings and just talking about what we're gonna do for the first day for students but i did want to speak to a little bit about something i was so excited about that this year dr bro put out an email his back swing on the staff around reset and relaunch one focus i know that we will have this year and it was in his email was talking about what sure why so we had some great conversations around what their why is and why they got into teaching and uh so we watched there was a video that we watched was called the calling if you ever ever met it it's on youtube uh to look at the calling it was about the importance of that one teacher that can make such an impact um it was a family that had dealt with their daughter having a lot of anxiety depression and that the girl had missed so many days of school and even had a hard time getting out of bed that was the gist of the person that was speaking um and i think the biggest thing that came from that was he talked about how important it really could be for you so he talked about the next year in fifth grade she missed zero days so that was in her fourth minute in fifth grade zero days he said because of her fifth grade teacher miss patton the dad said that miss patties single-handedly changed the game forever for his daughter and their family that we are all the miss patties of all the staff and everyone that works in schools we're all the miss patties that the work we do matters and our work goes further than our eyes will ever save it was a little bit emotional for some staff including and i think it really helped us to get uh to give a perspective that on our toughest day we can't forget or don't forget that we are still some consumption and there's a lot i think a lot of great conversations that came out of it so we welcomed 787 students through the doors the first day last year we had 790 students um we lost a class of over 200 we gained a class of about 185 right now we have two classes that are in the 200 still we also had 32 new students and we have two uh people that are filling out paperwork this week so we'll end up with 34.

i call this meeting to order for the board of chico unified and with that we'll do a flag salute i pledge allegiance to the flag of the united states of america and to the republic for which it stands one nation under god indivisible with liberty and justice for all thank you so i also want to read the civility statement that in response to what the governor has also passed the governing board recognizes the role that civility plays in creating a safe and positive school climate and enabling a focus on student well-being learning and achievement civil behavior is polite courteous and reasonable behavior which is respectful to others and includes integrity honesty acceptance dependability observance of laws and rules in effective communication the board expects civil behavior in the use of district electronic digital systems and platforms on district grounds and facilities as well as district events including school board meetings students staff parents guardians and community members shall participate in district activities including school board meetings in a civil manner so thank you for listening all right with that um anyone have an announcement okay excuse me i just want to announce to the community or remind we've already heard about it that the 35th annual uh bidwell park and chico creeks clean up is on september 17th the whole community is invited to volunteer we have over 350 people already signed up to participate that day in celebration of world cleanup day so pre-registration actually closes tonight at midnight and same day registration is available at hooker oak park starting at 8 30 a.m that morning it goes till 2 p.m and then a volunteer appreciation event follows until 4 o'clock so it should be a really fun day of cleaning up tons of waste out of our parks and streams did you repeat the date yeah it's saturday september 17th okay thank you anybody else all right so i also have an announcement the bidwell park nature center is going to host this saturday i think they said from noon to three an ice cream social for the community so if your kids like ice cream like mine do yeah you want to be there and it's free is to get everybody exposed to what the nature center offers and i'm pretty sure it's noon to three okay thank you for that all right with that we'll move to the consent calendar is there anyone who wants to pull an item from the consent calendar and president i have a question on the consent calendar is business services considered part of the consent calendar okay then i'd i'd like to pull the contract approvals okay all right anything else would someone want to pull all right so may i have a motion then i will move adoption of the consent calendar i'll second that minus the um yeah yeah okay so we have a motion by tom and a second by matt to pull i mean to move forward with the consent calendar and we'll take a roll call vote robinson aye landau-eye kaiser i dolby i tennessee i do want to complement the boosters for both high school cross-country teams they are contributing a great deal of financial support for them to go and have these very positive preparatory meets so that's really really really positive you know what i lied i have another announcement yesterday the men and women's national soccer teams did the first global ever agreement to share equally men and women salaries facilities and travel arrangements so let's hope the rest of the world pays attention and follows an array for you as soccer yeah all right okay so with that we'll turn to eileen on business contracts um yes thank you madam president um in reviewing this item i came across some information where where did where did our maintenance and operations oh they're hiding um i don't really need any comments i i just wanted one of the things that i found out because i asked whether or not this was a planned replacement rotation or whether or not and whether or not we had the money to continue it if it was a planned rotation for replacement and i was informed that the reason why there's a delay in this and where this money is coming from is the the covered monies but because of the amount of money i believe the cost that we have to have it approved by the point of information yeah i want to make sure we're talking about the hvac systems right yes the hvac system yeah but you didn't say you mentioned that part i'm sorry i want to make sure we're on same page okay thanks that we have to wait for approval from the state department of education um but once we get done spending the covered money and we go back to our three percent maintenance money we don't have to wait anymore so if anybody's wondering why we don't already have these it's because by law you know by ed code i believe it's by law basically because of the nature of the coveted relief dollars any single item over five thousand dollars has to have uh department of education pre-approval prior to us um purchasing or procuring those items the smallest of these were three tons yeah and the biggest was 10 tons so not your household ac as i i know it's this issue of our air conditioning units has been an issue of late i wanted to let everyone know why these weren't available a month ago so thank you and now i'm ready to to motion to approve those guys that contract you're moving all the contracts correct yes that's true there's what nine of them okay so we have a motion by eileen to move business services approval of contracts i'll second that tom seconds and then just as a query so jacqueline do we have any idea about the date that the state will approve the state's already actually pre-approved these so we have gotten confirmation but we had to have that prior to bringing it to the board because of the dollar value so okay we are go if it's approved tonight we will be issuing pos tomorrow okay i'm sure no one has enjoyed the heat levels that we have been having so all right so with that we can um just have a voice vote all those in favor of approving business services contracts please say aye hi all right thank you okay with that i think ted you are on so thank you we're excited to talk a little bit about um upk tonight for you also and just looking for feedback from the board about what to share tonight we heard we kind of you guys are looking for kind of a mile-high view and not getting down into the weeds too much about some of the things so we've got a little bit of a in just information to share with you tonight and we're actually excited this is really a huge shift kind of an education if you think of it we're really adding a whole other grade level over the course of the year here over the course of multiple years and it's it's fabulous for families but it also comes with some complications to do those things as well so let's see so the areas we're going to talk a little bit about is just what is universal pre-k i mean it's kind of a focus with tk but it's also woven into the pre-k experience also kind of what does it look like in chico unified currently issues we're looking at kind of moving ahead with it because it is expanding significantly over the next couple years here and also next steps for us with it and certainly if you guys have questions at any point ask so kind of to think of it's hard to talk about tk without talking about upk and of course they love their acronyms like that so upk is universal pre-kindergarten so the state is really looking for every child in the state over time here to have a year of a pre-kindergarten experience before they actually go into kindergarten and the state has kind of said there's several ways to get that to happen part of it is through experiences like what we have to identify the tk transitional kindergarten experience part of it is through our state funded preschools like what kathleen runs and part of it is our other opportunities in the community as well could be a head start it could be just private preschools so there's a whole bunch of ways that they would like to see students getting a year a pre-kindergarten year under their belt with those things so the term they use for that is upk and of course everything centers around tkpk with those things i have i have a question ted if the goal is to to get all of these students involved is there a like a a tracking system or something that lets us know how many kids are still out there that aren't in um how many kids are not participating yes it's it is almost impossible because they don't have to register with us so that's one of the complications for us mandatory correct so we're not ever quite sure what's what what may or may not be happening with it so there's a little bit of guesswork as far as what our expansion and capacity needs will be [Music] kathleen has a pretty steady stream of people interested with her program also and we have a typical 100 person waiting list with some of those things but we really don't know and we'll talk about a little bit further in here eileen too you know families have options and even once they're that age as well they can go to tk they can go to preschools so there's a lot of options for families which makes it harder for us to zero in on like how many are actually coming to our tk programs also so just a touch of history this is you know we're talking like nine years ago the state started talking what do we want to do with those students that were missing being kindergarten age and starting with their peers so for for quite a while we had those september october november students that weren't old enough to start kindergarten so the state came back and said we're going to start this thing called universal trend or excuse me transitional kindergarten and i'd say when they started it it was really um kind of there there was not a ton of fourth order planning they just kind of told us let these students start school basically for chico unified we had them kind of mixed in with k classes because of space and kind of some of those kinds of issues with it so it was really kind of a slow start with it i would say especially from the state perspective so we've had students in tkk classes for about eight or nine years now with it since the state made it okay uh everybody has to be providing kindergarten excuse me if we have kindergarten we have to be offering tk also that's part of the expectation from the state to do those things we have four hours of tk we do six hours and actually expanding soon more and i'll talk about that a little bit later in the in the presentation also really curriculum wise the state was not real specific about that they wanted some kind of a developed curriculum that wasn't quite k but not quite preschool also so they said kind of create some opportunities put some things together one of our recently retired tk teachers laura manning has been part of a lot of the state discussions it's just been really helpful with us putting together kind of curriculum options and what we should order and put in place for those kinds of things facility requirements really kind of the same as kntk they would like bathrooms in all those rooms as the new ones are being built and that's a big issue with it also our push for those things to be happening so this is what it looks like as far as what the state calls like a full implementation so they've started rolling out about two months every year and that's kind of an odd term for it but it used to be students could not start if they were born in september october november in decay and those were the tk students so this year they've added on two more months so it's september october november december january so all those kids are turning at that age until that point they're now eligible so they're going to be expanding two years out until 25-26 and basically at that point we will have just added on a whole other grade level on to what's happening in chico unified caitlin this is a really silly question but um this is what i was mentioning i think a few months ago when looking at the progression or the timeline gets confusing it's so simple and i think that i should be able to interpret it right but there are no years on those months so september 2nd of 22 to february 2nd 23 is that my interpretation right yes okay and september 2nd of 23 to april 2nd of 24 okay that's that's where it got confusing was what just looking at like it wasn't even when you would look it up from the state level and it was you know a spreadsheet or whatever just so we could even clarify this a bit more okay point taken uh we we can enroll kids if they're missing that age a little bit one of the things that's happened in chicago historically we've not had space to do those things so if students are turning you know the age appropriate after that cut off we've had very few spaces it's not that we're opposed to it the other thing is we don't get ada for those students until they turn that age as well so it's possible that it could happen just over the many years we've had very few spaces available our tk's have been very full for quite a while with just the the enrolled age of students who want to participate with it family choice this is what i was talking about your question eileen about knowing transitional kindergarten it's not compulsory so if they choose to come that's great if they don't we have to offer it though and have a space for them there if they would like to come parents have a choice too so they can be in a pre-k program i.e a state-funded preschool program or they could be in our tk program also it's really up to those parents and that's been one of the things i think tina's done a really good job we have some elap funding coming that's going to start expanding the school day for some of our tk kids we're actually kind of piloting at a couple schools right now what's happened a lot of parents are able to stay in a state-funded preschool for eight plus hours and our tk's are only going about six hours now but we're working on expanding that so that's not a barrier for them to be in a tk program in our sites also so i'm going to let kathleen who if you don't know kathleen very well she's done it oh i'm sorry eileen sorry about being slow on the uptake but as you were talking about the expanding to the additional hours are we are we going to be covered if we do we get we get the ada for the tk once the t's are qualified yes are we going to be able to afford to expand it those hours that's what the elop funding is for is to kind of create additional opportunities outside the school day so outside the school day would be expanding that traditional tk day and that's what they're giving us money to do those kinds of things and it can be a mix of different ways to to provide that additional up to nine hours a day with it but that that's one of the ways we're doing it we've got a lot of feedback that our tk families would like the opportunity kind of like a fourth grader that's in the blast program they would like that for their students also or children okay thank you elop stands for expanded learning opportunity program chris yes okay mr marchand he's on it so i'm going to let kathleen if you don't know we have been i'll let kathleen talk all about our preschools but she's done a bang-up job um just to kind of share with you i'm over at mcmanus quite a bit just doing with different meetings over there and i try to get there early and i'll almost lurk outside the preschool program and we'll just casually ask parents you know and they don't know me i say i work for chico and i just ask them all the time you know are you happy with it is going well and just 100 of them are like we love it it's been great kind of things like that so kathleen does a great job with it i'm going to let her talk about the state funded preschool part in this upk thing also for us hello so chico unified opened our first two preschools full day full year cspp california state preschool program classrooms in january of 2017.

uh from as far as washington to florida uh and in the area around here we had 14 students from danbury a couple from the milford and come from bethel in the area so and then uh i think with six magnus school students um exciting i tell you one of the excited when marketers talk about what's exciting at school i tell you what one of the exciting things for our students is getting back when you talk to that normalcy is getting back into being in the lunchroom and sitting at the table it's the little things that matter as you might know last year we had to sit every other one and we had half the time uh really not half the time but partial time to eat and go out to recess but they are so excited i mean we had to like literally i was ready to put seat belts out a couple of kids they were so excited um my funny story of course it's around food um i sat down with a couple fifth graders at lunch and you know every year i do this and ask them you know what what do you like the most about the whiskey here some kids said that they you know they're really excited about getting some classes having different teachers and talking about their lockers all the home complaining they're skinny the lockers but my favorite was when i went to one table when i asked guys what's one of the things you really like here kid yelled at me and he said definitely the chicken nuggets i never had chicken nuggets this good another student looked at he said you've never been to chick-fil-a so of course that's a middle school humor but i thought that was a fun thing to share with us thank you very much thanks dean dr peter okay so it really was an amazing start to learn uh along the lines of mark and dean i really have to say thank you thank you to christian ramos and cosmic tennis soccer our custodians who are short-handed so you know mark listed a group of nine custodians at the high school we had just these two men and i'll tell you those fours look like glass like that they're like when they start some ice skates uh classroom sparklers so they really did an awesome job so huge shout out my hiring committee parents teachers interventionists and bless them the students that we brought in uh especially for the special ed we thought how wonderful i i had twins who were seven and their brother was five so what better way than impacted learning capabilities in a special demo lesson at one point i had a look at the teacher who was giving a lesson and say did you need to send a woman into the principal office because you can do that you know my mother's been outside just for such an event and she said he's mine i thought wow and we did enough uh thank you to the center school teachers they did an amazing job very thoughtful placements for our grade two students uh huckleberry teachers did thoughtful placements for our third and fourth graders i can't wait to work in blue lake i invited myself to probably three tours um and maybe i know you're laughing because i'm so excited with shoelock i actually walked upstairs in the stairwell and those we were all enough to remember dancing in the streets with david bowie and january and i'll be in those because that was dancing up and down stairwells as far as opening day enrollment numbers second grade we had 174 students across eight classrooms class sizes were 21-22 third grade we have 186 students across nine classrooms class sizes of 20 and 21 and in fourth grade we have 172 students across 8 classrooms class sizes of 21 and 22.

we are a growing program and we currently have four state preschool classrooms and we're working on opening the fifth at loma vista our wait list continues to grow every day just when you think more families aren't coming every day i'm getting more even more emails just inquiring about the program families have to meet income guidelines and the income guidelines have increased this year to 100 of the state median income when um last year it was at 85 percent so just to get an idea a family of four can have a monthly gross income of up to 9 and for the full day program families have to have a need such as working looking for work or going to school our programs serve children the age is 2.9 up to five years old and our classrooms are funded by cde the department of education and we are also licensed through community care licensing caitlin i was looking for the updated um income guidelines and i honestly couldn't find them for like anywhere in the state i even another school to you i believe um it was on the weekend though so you may not have received right but that's just not information that's on the website somewhere oh okay okay so we could it's not right now okay i was yeah i was there a lot of times it's very possible that i just don't find that when i go to look for it so i was just asking if it was available somewhere for something okay right we i do share it with families when i'm working on the enrollment and a lot of people will just ask for a family of four you know what's the income threshold um we will happily share that information with erica and see if she can find a spot on the website for it too we'll find a spot thank you question sorry before you move on um the new site at loma vista will it have a focus on early identification for special needs or sped students yes all of our classrooms do but we will definitely be offering more inclusion at loma and you want to share like kind of the composition like our kids or all of the classes right and the state is requiring us it's kind of like the other um age thing look like every couple years like right now they're requiring five percent next year they're going to require seven percent seven point five percent of the children um enrolled in our program to have an iep and then the following year it's ten percent so they're they're requiring it but we've been offering it in all of our classes for sure but yeah but the sped site won't the longer business site won't be a site specifically sorry i didn't hear you but the loma vista site won't be a sped site specifically no it will be a state preschool classroom offering a little bit extra inclusion because we have those resources available there okay well but kids can have in-home services from two to three right so the early intervention it's zero to three years old typically or even speech kiddos we'll get oh yeah i'm speech out the school district too yeah i have a question now thank you tom for mentioning that why do we only have one group that's targeted for specific look at screening for ieps and special needs all of the children are screened with an asq the ages and stages questionnaire for their age group so all of our programs whether it's the one at loma vista okay absolutely some of the children that were enrolling at loma vista already have an iep so i worked with the special education department for that and i would say elaine i think if you look at all the programs that kathleen every kid and every one of not every kid every one of those programs has kids in there that have ieps as well so it's not kids with ieps are going lowers they're actually sprinkled into all of our state funded preschool programs oh thank you that was the answer i was looking for thank you yeah that that's been one of the beauties of our partnership with the innovative preschool was that program and the fact that we now have it you know sprinkled through all of it it is such an enormous benefit to all of the kids absolutely thank you and i would say kathleen and her staff have done a great job just integrating those kids and welcoming me and we actually had meetings two days ago with diane and her staff about next year spaces for integration what she feels we're going to need with our preschool kids coming in etc etc so they're actively planning working together to make sure their space is in there and that we're kind of taking them in part of the program also so here's where we are in chico unified right now we have 10 classes and i'm really talking more about the gen ed side of things i think diane's going to talk a little bit more about the sped end of it when she talks kind of a sped update with you guys in a month or two with things so we have ten classes right now in our district eight of them are more focused on just gen ed two of them are very blended those two classes over at marigold and they are kind of the composition roughly about forty percent of the kids in there have ieps and about sixty 60 roughly speaking are kids without ieps as well so a lot of support we intentionally try to keep those couple classes a little bit smaller just there's a lot of adult bodies in there providing support via the iep with some of those things but we've got about 240 slots and i would say we've got about 30 slots open right now so all of our classes are around 20 21 ish kind of in the district sprinkle in there uh count eight let's see two additional birthday months i was talking about rolling it out like that so this is the year for december and january and this year we added a one additional new tea cake excuse me i can't talk we had an additional tk class over at rosedale with kind of a dual bilingual focus with it also and we had the two additional over at marigold this year also so kind of trying to figure out like what those additional months mean as far as enrollment for us is a little bit of a guess as well so we're we actually are in a good spot right now as far as not being twofold but having enough space to accommodate a few more enrollments as they're happening as well man yeah so um in preschool our um iep students our special needs students are basically spread out evenly and then in tk they're they're equally spread out also i would say they're just more a focused level of support over the two classes at marigold if that makes any sense but but you just said that there were more in the two groups so they're not equally spread out correct i'm sorry but all of the stu if students with an iep are welcome to go into any of the tk classes just kind of as any student would be the level of support over at marigold is a little bit higher with more adults so kind of depending on the level of need in the iep there's more support there so if students have a need for more support that's where they're attending so both of those classes are gold thank you here's where we start having some awareness issues for you guys to start kind of thinking about one of the things that's happening is hiring staff for teaching positions for tks of course the state has made it a touch more complex to hire tk teachers than just a regular teacher if that makes any sense so they have to get their teaching credential and have additional early childhood education units to be a teacher in that role for us so statewide you're here in nc and also it's already hard to hire teachers as it is so they've thrown this additional criteria on there with those kinds of things also we've been fortunate we have some dollars we've kind of started working with people that are interested whether it be classified personnel or certificate of personnel to help pay for those units if they're interested and encourage them to go that direction and kind of we're just a perpetual recruiting option trying to encourage people and see if they're interested in doing those kinds of things i think everybody i meet that even expresses an interest i start talking about like we've got money we'll help with you know units and get you there with those things so um that that is one of the issues that is a statewide issue just getting people that want to work in that role the other one and i think julie's actually here to answer questions and is on the agenda to speak about it later is facilities um for chico unified we have i think we are comfortable for another year going out not this year but next year as far as our space that we'll need for tk classes i think we started having some problems out about two or three years though as far as having enough classrooms to house us in um julie's done a great job and she's been very pre uh with the right word be preemptive talking about it starting to put plans in place i think mcmanus is a good example of like hey we've got to do something sooner than later there so coming back and changing some of those kinds of planning to build additional space in there for it but we are going to have to have for you guys and we are going to have to have a pretty lengthy discussion at the facility committee about how are we going to make sure we create space for all these incoming kids because we're probably going to be adding another you know from three to 400 kids over the next few years and um we can fit for a year or two we can't fit for three or four more years with three or four hundred more students at that point so that'll be a big issue that you guys can talk about and like i said julie's on the agenda to talk about master plan coming up that will address those things uh and just like i said every district is having these problems with it you know the state great idea let's we love upk happening they didn't give a lot of dollars for it so that's certainly part of the problem with the facility end of it with those things so everybody's having those issues did you want to make a statement oh i just wanted to say that you'll be hearing from me later when we talk about updating our master plan back in 2016 the board decided to move our sixth graders up to the junior high level because we're increasing in enrollment and we were attempting to accommodate you know higher enrollment at the elementary level i think that very next year we went to full day kindergarten so we needed double the amount of kindergartens at every site immediately so we scooped up those spaces that we created by the movement of the sixth graders to the junior highs so every school needs to be looked at and consider where tk is going to be housed on each elementary campus and that's what we're going to talk about later all right good thank you next steps for us um one of the things we started talking julie about is we don't have a tk class on every campus right now and and part of our like how they've ended up on campuses has really just been space available and we've been kind of like hodge podging along so julie's really i'm starting to work on making a very comprehensive plan on how do we intentionally put a tk class or two on every campus going forward from here so that right now you know kids kids not attending their current neighborhood school it's kind of a form 10 process to change schools we're kind of somewhere in the middle with tk kids because we don't have a one at every site so we're just trying to match up parent requests with space available and kind of going from there but it'll be very nice if and when we get to that point of having at least one if not two tk's on every campus like that so it would be part of just a neighborhood school kind of enrollment process for families so does that mean we can't do the sibling thing that we usually what we've done or dr kaiser with um with tk enrollment if they've got siblings at that school they've been a priority to get them in there and had a tk at that school also okay we definitely want to keep families together it's hard for them uh caitlyn excuse me i'm still trying to kind of wrap my head around or compartmentalize state preschool and tk because they are different um and it's my understanding and please correct me if i'm wrong that our the state preschool goes up to age five tk starts at age four when it's all said and done and fully rolled out and we're looking at having 12 tk classrooms with the next steps having one at each elementary site at least yeah at least and then so that's and it's about 24 students in each of those rooms and so i'm trying to like figure out the numbers here and then for state preschool can you help me understand um kind of the demographic of age for those because there's going to be overlap of those four to five-year-olds i was just thinking that's where the parent choice comes into play at least right now it is still a choice um and i'm not even sure i'm sorry parents are eligible for both because they do have that overlap katelyn what you're talking about so kind of depending on their family need what the program is they're looking for etc etc they really can opt in to either one at that point so we actually have families that are you know talking tk and they find out kind of the program with state funded preschools they're interested in that so there is an overlap and they can kind of pick and choose which one will work best for their family and one of the major differences is that tk follows the normal school day whereas sorry state preschool can be up to a full day yes okay it's 246 days a year for the full day program also so we're open during summer and all of the different breaks that the school district takes okay and we are open 7 45 to 5 every day so some of that is reasons that the parents decide to stay with the state preschool for work cool thank you so the last couple things up here uh just one of them like i mentioned earlier is elap funding to start expanding that school length of the school day for those families because it is hard to leave work do things like that pick up your child at 2 30 and do things like that so there's definitely been a lot of interest in parent interest in having that extended school day and kind of moving up to the nine hour a day opportunity like a lot of our kids are in the blast program have that length of day opportunity one other one we're looking at we're looking at potentially adding a sixth state funded preschool over at pleasant valley high school they have a great cte pathway child development lab over there i would say it was almost comical my first conversation with the administrative vice principal over there i think they're starting to have uh interest in it and kind of see we think would be a great option if you think of you've been around chico for a long time chico state used to have child development lab so kind of looking at something in that mode to kind of have experiences for students there the high school students but also be running a high quality state funded preschool because the facility if you've not visited fp is fabulous i mean it's like a cadillac kind of facility over there to run a preschool in so that's one other option we're talking about with it also and kind of moving ahead and it's also an opportunity to grow our own employees exactly high school lineup the other thing i blew through really quickly and i was talking fast and i apologize uh right now in the tks the state has said you have to have a 12 to 1 student-to-staff ratio so from our end all of our ks and tks up until this year have had two and a half hours of aid time that's just what we put in place with cuta parter agreement say yes they definitely need some extra help in there so the state has said when they're in school you've got to have two adults and that's like hiring an aide or somebody else to be that second set of hands in that class for this year it's 12 to 1.

commission okay could we move on to item seven then which are the public hearings for the next business meeting uh we can one moment all right public hearing scheduled for the next business meeting we'll have a proposed special exception use for a designated consumption facility at 3860 research park drive this is a location with an existing provisioning center and is proposing to add a designated consumption facility to the same location we have a site plan with a landscape modification for 529 detroit for redeemer church this is a proposed redevelopment of the um uh jeff the old treasure march thank you treasure treasure mart site um and then we also have uh proposed new development uh north maple apartments this is a proposed site plan and zoning at the southwest intersection of m14 and maple a proposed apartment development with surface parking and a sort of a accessory amenity building proposing of some affordable units solar installations for consideration all on that agenda great thank you alrighty we will move on then to unfinished business and i to item 8a which is the village of ann arbor site planning rezoning to r4a multiple family dwelling zoning for city council approval the petitioner proposes to construct 561 dwelling units on approximately 65 acres at 1680 duvarn roads road units include owner occupied and rental units access is proposed from pontiac trail duvarn road and leslie park stormwater detention is proposed on site the project includes a wetland use permit for a 0.03 acre of wetland impact construction is currently proposed to take place in two phases staff recommendation we are still kind of i think we are going to be getting some so additional information on that yeah if i could jump in so first of all my apologies to the commission and to members of the public um over the weekend we had um quite a bit of back and forth you'll recall that this item was postponed from the july meeting we were hoping that all issues would be resolved in time for this postponed date which we specified at that time many of those issues were resolved we originally published your packet um um optimistically that all those issues would end up being verified we were trying to balance getting the image information materials out to the commission and to the public while also giving about a week for our team to be able to review revised documents in short we learned that our engineering department and traffic review department had not was not in a position to recommend approval we modified our recommendation to you over the weekend reflecting that subsequently we've worked hard with those teams those teams have worked really hard the engineering department and transportation department and the petitioners provided a lot of additional information as well in short we are recommending approval of this petition it we have added some conditions however one of those conditions is that the public services engineering review is approves all of the outstanding comments um prior to us scheduling this for consideration at the city council there's also a recommendation for a variance condition for a variance as well just to be clear we did have some conversation about the brownfield aspect of this petition at a previous at the previous discussion i want to be clear that the engineering department is their biggest concern is to make sure that the utilities are going to be installed in an appropriate way in the context of the contaminants that are on site they haven't been able to conclude that we hope that they will be able to conclude that and will not have impacts to the site plan if for some reason it does that site plan may have to come back to the planning commission if it is refined so again i apologize for the back and forth that's a little bit of explanation of how we're trying to troubleshoot some of those issues over the past few days alrighty i think we're moving on then to a petitioner presentation for up to 10 minutes so go ahead hello bloomfield if darien newbecker quickly moved up to the panel so he could share the slides i would appreciate that i'm just going to interrupt for a second too i'm just noticing that the camera seems to be staring at everybody's chests instead of at their faces and i'm wondering if there's i apologize for that ctn has been working on that the feed to the public is is adequate you can see from the televisions there's something with the podium feed so the image that you are seeing is not ideal but the public is seeing that um i i indicated that we could probably live with that since we're in the room this is a much better view totally fine thank you um so again it's great uh great to be back in front of you we got really good feedback really great feedback from you last time we were here um you know we had a really good discussion as you know and we took a lot of the feedback to heart and we've made a lot of improvements to the plan so a number of improvements not the least of which is our promise to go all electric and the for sale section of the development which listen that's very important to you which means it's very important to us we've done a lot of research on this um you've gotten us out of our comfort level a little bit um but uh you know we've really researched it and i think we're comfortable with what we're proposing at this point so again we're proposing all electric for the for sale section which is basically the northern half north of the east west road for the most part there's some apartments on the north of that on the east side but all of the for sale would be all electric so we're excited about that we've provided further definition of the traffic conditions and specifically at our pontiac trail entrance so we've worked with traffic on that we've provided for a covered bus stop with covered bicycle parking we've worked with the ata on that so that would be what we'd be providing on pontiac trail at our entrance we did provide a pedestrian connection to northside glen it actually the road actually did go on to our property so we're just simply connecting to that existing road so we were able to work that out with the grades which is great i think that's a fantastic addition we'll be providing con contrast lights and we'll providing a signs for the crosswalk that's existing right now on pontiac trail that was put in with the polti development north sky we have resolved our issues with solid waste we've added some information on the site plan which i think they're amenable to i know they're amenable to if things aren't working in the future there's an alternate plan but we feel based on our experience with many other projects that we've built there will be no issues with solid waste so we believe we have a resolution to that we've offered off-site road improvements which i've outlined in my letter to you hopefully you all got our memorandum we have reduced parking i know that that was certainly something that came up so we've reduced parking in both the for sale and the four rent area so that covers um a lot of what we talked about last time i'd like to go through the slides but quickly office this time i cut out a bunch of them since you've seen them i just want to make sure that uh you know if there's new people watching that there they know what the project is if that's okay with you okay so darren if you can move to the next slide darian i don't know if he can hear me does do you know if the public can hear yes he should be able to okay darian can you he's talking he says yeah it says he's talking it's not presenting jeff did you receive the powerpoint maybe we could try to pull it out oh here we go okay great you got it perfect um so just quickly on the the summary it is uh 58 acres that is net of um uh the right-of-way uh for the la and landfill or 67 gross acres total and as we talked about last time we do have some additional acreage we'll be bringing forth in a future development plan the master designation is 7 to 10 units per acre we're we're within that total 484 total homes 164 of those are for sale those are the ones i mentioned would be all electric and the 324 lease um essentially single family tax single family uh homes and town homes and then a highly amenitized apartment community you know 684 up to 1800 square feet one to four bedrooms so that is the village concept that we see a lot of different um you know um opportunities and options um for people looking to live in this community so that that really has been our goal from the start darien if you can move to the next one please project highlights again multiple entry points that's what's really important about this a lot of different options a lot of open space 65 open space plus and new neighborhood connections so one of the things we talked about last time is there's a direct connection to leslie park from olson park which we think is just fantastic right now anybody knows that area knows that it's really difficult to get to leslie park and we think that this really will open up a really great amenity that the city already has mix of residential land uses obviously we're reclaiming a former landfill property which is a very important part of this component this is why there's 60 plus acres of land sitting in the middle of ann arbor so we're working very hard to be able to build this in a safe manner and we've got a very good consultant that's done a lot of work on this he's actually available on sme if there's any questions regarding any of our environmentals again we're going all electric and the for sale and we're using all energy efficient appliances very family-oriented plans like i said up to four bedrooms so that's something that's surely lacking high quality owner occupied and amenitized apartment and i won't talk about the development team this time so moving on to the next one so this is the context plan which i showed you last time i think what's important about this is we've got basically pud and r4a all around us so we certainly are fitting in of course we fit in with the master plan this has been long planned for something very similar to what we're what we're proposing so next librarian and this is the overall site plan so uh to the left um just for those who are seeing this for the first time pontiac trail is on the west which is the left that's that entrance it's a long entrance in to the property it's a lot of wetlands there we're only impacting .03 acres of wetland but you can see there's a lot of wetlands at that location so we've stayed away from it obviously not developing in that area i think it'll be pretty serene entrance into the development to be honest and then you come in you'll see a clubhouse to the right for the rentals and that actually will be open for the for sale owners as well as part of their hoa dues on the north side which is toward the top that would be the for sale section those are town homes and attached single family that kind of green area to the right middle right that is the landfill area we're not proposing to touch that that would be tens of millions up to 100 million dollars to fix that and nobody is going to be able to do that so right now it's a beautiful trade area we're proposing to leave it that way we may have some paths in the next version you see of this as we're working with eagle on how to mitigate any potential issues there and i think i think we'll be able to do it dairy next slide please and again this is really just i think signaling all of the advantages to the property this is not a pud so we're not required to have a public benefit um but we know that this is a very large property there's there's a lot of stakeholders involved we wanted to do the best we could on this property so i'm not going to go through all of these but um it's important to us to point out that uh you know we're providing these connections we're providing all electric and a portion of it for providing the bus stop we're gonna have you know many hundreds of ev chargers in the units and also um for guest parking so we're gonna have over a mile of bike and pedestrian paths this is i think a very special project and you know this is one that we're very excited about next slide please and i won't go through all of these i know this i showed you this last time but we took your um your policies very seriously um and we've gone through this and we've made a lot of changes to ar our buildings themselves the site development how we're developing it the types of sustainable items that we're adding such as solar panels on the clubhouse solar street lights as i mentioned all electric on the northern portion all of these i think are very important to the successful development at this location so these are all the things that that we see in your policies that we're happy to provide on the project and the next slide i think there's some product so just quickly these are the attached single family these really are single family homes about 1850 square feet up to four bedroom three bedroom loft or four bedrooms um and i don't know i think there's about a hundred of these if i'm not mistaken 90 to 100 of these and that's really kind of your northern central corridor there two story obviously and they are attached they're in next slide please these would be the townhomes so these would also be for sales in that northern section as well would be two car townhomes and one car townhomes ranging from 1300 to 1600 square feet and darian next slide please and these would be the the apartments dtn we're very excited to have them as a partner if you don't know anything about dtn they're very well regarded i'm not sure we'd want to do this with anybody else so we're very happy to have them on board and they're a partner on the apartment section to the south i'm not sure if there's one more slide and really that's it so i'd love to speak to you again about the improvements we've made any other questions you have since you've last uh seen me and i'm happy to have the conversation thank you great thank you mr khan do you have anything to add in terms of the staff report one thing i do want to add is that we did receive an email this evening from our transportation group that indicated that they're inclined to ask for a contribution for the construction of a new roundabout at pontiac trail in duvarn as well as a contribution for potential pedestrian crossings of pineapple trail and possibly dubarra i i do want to add that as as brett indicated we are prepared to recommend approval with the two conditions that are within the motion so i'd like to read that staff recommendation staff recommends approval of the proposed r4a zoning because it is consistent with the recommendations of the comprehensive plan land use element and is compatible with zoning in the surrounding area staff recommends approval of the site plan and wetland use permit because the project complies with all applicable local state and federal ordinances standards and regulations will not cause a public or private nuisance and will not have a detrimental effect on public health safety and welfare lastly i also want to make a commitment to ensuring that our public services group meets quickly with the petitioner to address any of the um outstanding issues that um that that exists so hopefully those items can be addressed and we'll be able to take it on to city council thank you could you clarify a little bit from me anyway um i know in the report they were contributing to a roundabout is this with the email that you have is that in addition to that or is that just kind of fortifying what was already in there right so the staff report indicates is a willingness on the part of the development team to um contribute to the roundabout as part of the non-environmental brownfield costs which which means the developer has listed a number of items that they're willing to put into the non-environmental brownfield which needs city council approval and those are dollars that in essence the developer would be providing up front but would be reimbursed over a 10 or 15 year period by the city for those for those items the petitioner can certainly summarize what those items are but they include contributing to a portion of the cost of the roundabout as well as potential electrification items but um i think the petitioner would be able to summarize those better better than i can okay thank you um we'll get into i think go through the public hearing thing and when when we're really in the of course the mode of talking about it then we'll we'll get into things like that i think so all righty so let's have the public hearing for this this is an opportunity for persons to speak up to three minutes um about the village of ann arbor site plan and rezoning uh we'll first call on individuals that are present and then remote participants to speak during the public hearing remotely press star nine if listening by phone or use the raise the hand feature viewing through the web link for phone access call raised their hand and 877-853-5247-6634 the last three digits your phone number you'll hear an automated announcement that the host is allowing you to speak when speaking please move to a quiet area mute any television or background signs so that we may hear you clearly for either method of participation please state your name and address at the beginning of your comments is there anybody present that would like to speak on this petition i'll go first hello my name is ken clark i live at 497 larkspur street i'm only about a thousand feet south of the development on pontiac trail i bike mostly to get around um i bike to work today and i bike to this meeting so some of my concerns is specifically about biking with regards to this development and city plans and adopted proposals however i'm going to start with something different i really do like this proposal overall but having looked through the material today and yesterday that's been updated recently i'm a little confused about why the developer is talking about air based heat pumps when most recommendations for somewhere like ann arbor would be for ground loop heat pumps which work fabulously in in our area i have a friend who actually has one of those we have solar we don't have the heat pump yet we're working on that dt is planning to make their electricity zero emission seemingly before the furnaces in these units would fail so it seems odd that they would be talking about air-based heat pumps and furnaces when they could be talking about ground-looped heat pumps that would work fabulously and then it would be much closer to zero emission all the way through tt cleaning up their act while they're looking at the ground loop heat pumps which they should because drilling the ground loop is best done early in the development process i don't understand why they're not putting solar on a lot more of these roofs me and my neighbor both have solar on our roofs and it's been terrific we really like it my bigger concerns however about transportation emissions and safety uh transportation missions the biggest source of greenhouse gas emissions in ann arbor um our two adopted ways to deal with those greenhouse gas emissions in ann arbor are vmt reduction 50 reduction vmt and moving to 25 of in-town trips by bicycle um certainly all of those efforts shouldn't fall in one development but um it doesn't seem like they're discussing that at all uh it would be nice to have some discussion and some other documents about the vmt from this development other thing that bugged me is these two are two diagrams from the traffic study you can all see those okay that is not pontiac trail that is not duvarin neither pontiac trail nor duvarn have continuous leptorlings both of them have bike lanes i don't know what they're studying i mean these are examples but um this is pontiac trail it has no left turn lanes and it has bike lanes there's a lot of danger that we have right now with very aggressive driving in this area i would like to see their traffic study deal with that to some extent if there's anything they could do to solve those problems and in part to solve those problems our lowertown mobility study recommended i'm reading it here two locations along this corner that would benefit from the construction of roundabouts as at the new residential development village of ann arbor i saw no discussion of that either thank you for your time thank you anybody else present would like to address the planning commission on this you to give randall on ken garber 28 hammer hill court air source heat pumps are perfectly fine by the way i'm sure the petitioner will explain why geothermal is less of a consideration here um my concern is the 320 apartments that will be using gas furnaces um yeah all electric for the for sale portion thank you um but the petitioner has said in the past that high utility bills preclude heat pumps air source heat pumps for the 320 apartments the larger narrative is that affordability and sustainability are not compatible in new construction this is a false narrative i call your attention to exhibits f and g in mr lawford's august 29 letter two different consultants compared the operating cost of gas and electric appliances i do not question the computational accuracy since both since both use the rem rate model which is a standard model but a model is only as good as its assumptions exhibit f assumes heat pump efficiency of 8.5 hspf and cr14 no one doing high quality new construction uses such low efficiency heat pumps here's a catalog from bryant a major supplier in this catalog you can't find a heat pump system air source heat pump system below sear 18 or hspf 10.

we've had 35 new students come in and only nine we've got some pretty healthy numbers there popularity given our return to what the adults know is normal uh with a concerted focus on academics and rigor we have a math interventionist we're excited about we have a bilingual program focusing on our spanish multilingual learners and to support all of our students as their academic group will be called upon we have our school psychology and social worker and their extending ruler into what we're calling eq workshops so they're visiting all of our classrooms for a series of emotional coaching workshops so we're very excited to have that opening day we had dr burrell dr mann joined us i love touring with dr grill because the students always you know they're guessing who he is and someone said well he's the president and he says oh no he's the governor which everyone's like he's a superintendent you're the guy who does snow days and then all of a sudden you've got this little second grade kid who's like oh my birthday is march 7th but i couldn't put a snow down that day dr brooke was the hero uh dr man came around meeting faculty staff uh huge first impressions great first impression uh students and staff thank you i think so welcome as i walk into my personal favorite story i actually got a phone call about it today um we talked about normal in the cafeteria and the little boy went home because we have second graders and we're going to leave cafeteria so he described the food he's like yeah you know it's on a tray and they they kind of give it to us through a small hole and we take the tray so of course the mother's picturing stops where i can find them and i said no i assure you it's not like a snack bar size opening and you don't know me but you could fit 12 of me through this opening where they're getting traced and normally picking up so she started laughing just ah that makes sense makes me feel so much better and just the the last of the camaraderie even the table is just awesome uh one classroom doctor uh dr rubel got there provided so we talked you know i introduced myself what does the principal do and then you know we already know what consistency does and they kind of highlighted it one little boy said so really her big job is making you look good yeah i said yes that's that's accurate and then bless them and i'll never forget this child she must work a lot of overtime which i guess so either way we're very excited to be back and it's gonna be a great year january 2nd third here we come candlelit lake elementary so we're very excited thank you thanks david this is center school you know going on the trend of thanking people there are really so many dedicated staff members to thank for one of the most successful and joyful openings of school as reported not just by myself by so many members of the center school school community uh lisa dennis savage susan i just said lisa goggles and clarendon savage the secretary of the school did an amazing job in the excuse me of registering over 200 students and i cannot tell you how time consuming that really is because they touch base with each and every family of those 200 students and work with them on getting all the people work that's entailed to improve residency etc etc so really thank you thank you um to beth o'connor uh the school nurse who also was getting involved with the registration seth and technology uh our custodial staff barbara frank steve who um helped out for mr um brendan who was a newly hired a night custodian dan caldwell with brian and joe coming and helping out for maintenance also getting the school shining ready after a very busy summer with summer school etc leaving maybe two weeks to get school ready after summer school teacher teams who contributed greatly over the summer on curriculum work interview teams and other planning teams such as our meet and greets and also i would be remiss if i didn't also express my gratitude for all of the support that i received from my tso family and my fellow administrative um building leader colleagues as well very supportive so thank you um i'm very appreciative of all these amazing teams and all of the support that they've given to our school community so thank you to all our first week of school was exhilarating and i'm not going to lie slightly exhausting at the same time as i shared in our center school the weekly school newsletter campaigns it was so refreshing and exciting to have hallways and classrooms and playgrounds and cafeteria come back to life buzzing with big smiles excitement and social interaction our learners are back to having jobs such as bringing the class folders to the office and lunch counts to the cafeteria in the mornings and they're adorable skipping smiling over to uh to do their jobs and it's fantastic to see we welcomed a total of 366 students 34 preschool students 157 kindergartners and 181 first graders our class sizes in kindergarten or about 18ish across nine sections each with the support of a halftime para which has been wonderful we have about 20 to 21 students in each of our first grade classrooms of course sections as well so after a two-year hiatus i've got to say it was awesome to welcome over 100 parents and guardians to an in-person pre-k kindergarten open house yesterday evening at center school this year in collaboration with our grades two through four huckleberry colleagues and leadership team in alignment with the district theme of reset relaunch and the skills that are articulated undergraduate we are relaunching our curriculum development work with marie hilcock in conjunction with our huckleberry uh colleagues to move forward with the inclusion of relevant authentic context in our units of study in terms of curriculum and talk about you know getting back to you know rigorous academics uh we're also excited to welcome heather batchelor and rachel cohen to the elementary grades as instructional coaches in both science and social studies and our teacher teams are excited about engaging in this curriculum work around all of these content areas as well so we are future focused and ready to go at center school and beyond excited about creating an amazing experience for all of our learners this school year for both adults and students alike and while i don't have all these funny little anecdotes i do have more of a sweet story and that is on the first day of school you know welcoming students into the school one of our new to brookfield first graders who i met that's at first grade screening over the summer and you know gave him the book the kissing hand and on the very first day of school he ran in he saw me coming off the bus he ran over he gave me a big hug and he said i my mommy read that book to me last night that you gave me and i loved it you were right and he was so so excited um and then another little little boy that i spoke to after this was during dismissal um also a first grader and i said so how was your day of school it was the best day ever so not funny stories more endearing and sweet stories because that's really what um well exciting looking forward to a great year absolutely there you go well thank you all um all right so moving on with our agenda next up is our student representative report what the welcome katelyn says our new student [Applause] okay representative everyone my name is katelyn zessa and i'm a senior at brookfield high school i'm beyond excited to be this year's student board of ed representative for my school i enjoy being fully immersed in our community as a member of the national honor society co-captain of the varsity cheer team co-president of the vhs international human rights club and a certified lifeguard i'm looking forward to giving you all updates on our student government sports clubs upcoming our current events and more there will be more information to share as the school year is underway thank you so much why don't you take promise anonymous reporting system wrote regarding health curriculum the cohen's wrote regarding grants jessica jessica wrote raising the first week at hufflebury rachel alagna wrote with a brookfield high school policy question linda jaquette nick schmidt arya youngjae and sarah emerald regarding school bathrooms and the nick schmidt and sarah anderle also regarding gender identity process okay thank you next up is board moments i will let the board approve the minutes from the board retreat on august 16th the regular meeting on august 17th and the special board meeting on september 1st next up is subcommittee reports and uh joy but there's only two facilities of the reports i'm sorry did i skip the superintendent oh man you tell me you have good stories so good to see everybody principals again thank you for the introductions and the the great uh summaries of the first week really appreciate it um and welcome so a couple of four four big ideas that i want to talk about this evening and um part of recently launched you heard that that theme i know joy and bob joined us for the convocation and heard from our complication keynote speaker smashed a little um dean alluded to a little bit of getting back to our why uh why we got into this and uh like lightwork personal life balance and a whole host of other issues that we're all contending with as we um hopefully at some point permanently exit and then so the relaunch concept is really kind of getting back to normal but knowing there's no snap back what has happened happened and we've learned a lot and we could do what we're doing here at brookville which is take everything we've learned from that turn it into a positive and move forward in an excited grateful direction and so to that end i really appreciate the principles and their leadership and all of our teachers and the great work that's going on in the board support that we've had that end there's some key priorities i just want to mention to everybody so not only the community but certainly our teachers and our staff members our administration the board is aware of this but it's important to remind everyone in the community that we have some focus areas for the year one is strategic planning we have kicked off strategic planning in mid-august right before the start of school our next meeting is on september 29th um with strategic planning we will be tying the portrait of the graduate to the strategic plan also the priorities that i'm talking about here a big push over the summer is obviously enhancing security at our schools and moving forward with security the sros as we've discussed are in place the asso will be hired by the police department they're working on selecting folks to be interviewed for that position and our some of our administration will be invited to be part of that in addition to that principles this week we'll be interviewing the applicants for the five various uh security monitor positions so they're already on top of that hopefully by mid october we would have folks in place so we're really excited about sharing our security in addition to that um mrs dean cola hickman will be heading up ct says that's the special education data system that is a entire state move from a platform called idp direct to the special education data system and so that is an enormous transition and all the districts in the state are going through this and we're taking the opportunity to look at it from a very positive perspective that we want to share up the quality of our iep development our ppt process and use it as an opportunity for special for professional learning uh you heard dr pepsosky quite excited about camden wood lake elementary we are really working hard on that um dr rudel dr pepsock and myself were able to take a tour on friday morning last week it's really the spaces are getting quite defined it's looking great we're waiting on the uh uh what i'd like to call a short term schedule from omg we don't have like yet i'm going the other focus area is communication making sure that we are staying very supportive warm and accurate in our communication and we're working on that matter of fact i'll be sending out a communication later in the week about the coherence of communications protocols that we all can agree to follow that really are helpful in terms of our district communication plan the other piece is talking to the staff with an internal email regarding email communication and some other pieces of etiquette that'll be very helpful i think for everyone and then finally and most importantly in a lot of ways is the academic work that we do and focused on tying to our four c's in the portion of the graduate and so school improvement planning is ongoing and you've heard the term rigor and ramping up um and uh stepping up the level up mark i think is your term so we're really everybody's looking uh excited about that refocus and re-prioritization and in the continuation of course of the hard work we need to be doing in our academic work and so to that end i'd like to turn it over to anna for a second before i do the other parts of my um uh update to talk a little bit about school improvement planning to set the table for the fall and some of the work with the principles and we'll be sharing in the next couple of workbooks thank you very much hello everyone it's nice to be here at my first official at the table meeting so i just want to reiterate back to the new teachers and we still have one more person to introduce a little bit later on we'll get to that but i was able to work with all the new teachers and i it was a help and actually each one of the principals presented to them which they really appreciated and there was a palpable energy in the room and they got along immediately and very authentically so it was really nice to to have that be kind of the first kickoff that we did even prior to the opening of school so thank you for that and it was really exciting for me to be a part of that um i wanted to be able to give you and i appreciate the opportunity a little preview of the october 19th meeting where you will be we'll be giving a joint presentation the principles and i um going over the student data from last spring and as we all know we were talking about the leveling up and i actually shared with mr glenda the other day an article about academic developing academic identity and our students and really using the social emotional that social emotional focus we have kind of honed over the last couple years to help develop an academic identity for ourselves and our students and so the goal of this presentation will certainly be to inform everybody including the board of the results from last year's data from our state standardized testing but also really to focus as deb said a really forward thinking approach and so the idea of how the school improvement plans will align with the strategic planning that we are going through and how we can really kind of bring all of these pieces to the puzzle over the last six weeks since i arrived i've really been able to kind of begin to assess all of the resources that brookfield that you have graciously provided for this district in support of all the work we do and um now i think the way forward we'll be talking about bringing those pieces of the puzzle together and so the instructional coaches be a part of that certainly the principles and the strategic are the school improvement plans um as well as that intersectionality of the school improvement planning process and the strategic plan based on our first season work that we have already established and so i'm really excited to begin this work and to share with you the work that we've that we are envisioning um and a preview to that will be next week at the cape meeting where we have our first cape meeting um and where we will talk about the review of the summer curriculum work specifically in health in the health workshop that our health teachers went to strategic planning instruction coaching instructional coaching model and the impending changes from the state department of education that will affect some reading assessments at the k-3 level and so i'm really excited about this and i can't wait to get to work and show you all what we're doing back to you guys thank you dr mannion welcome to the table so they have two more items um one is transportation it's important for the public to know and the investment the agreement the board entered into we have a new bus contract and with that came random buses so some features of the new buses which is exciting for people to know about are one just a generally smoother ride than newer buses but more cameras and in addition to that four emergency exits instead of two and the last one was more cameras more scary cameras so um we're looking for a smoother safer ride clearly that's what we want to do with our transportation um into dean's point we talked about three students who missed the bus on uh i guess that was the first day of school dean and david jones is so responsive from all-star she's she's great um really a smooth start there's always an issue apparently quality bus stop or something like that but really in general of students we um around with a number of buses around town a very safe and smooth start regarding transportation and then finally it's really important to remind our families and our staff and everyone in the public here in town that we are in in-person meeting mode when we talk about normalcy and relaunching we started once we got into the point halfway through the year last year where we were able to not follow the mass mandate anymore a mandatory executive order we started moving toward in-person meetings because we finished the year strong with them we are fully continuing in-person meetings with conferences ppt's other kinds of meetings open houses that just mentioned center school's open house last night which was in person so the first offer the first invitation the first choice is always in person um we will absolutely accommodate zoom meetings or if a parent has to phone in because they don't have access to zoom or google needs or anything like that and so that's also offered to parents if they would like that but in person is all of our first trucks of course to have those interactions and build bridges and build those relationships i'm really excited about that um anecdotally i was told a number of parents probably the majority of us are in the quick meetings have wanted to do virtual meetings which is actually i didn't think it would be that many but more have asked for hey can we just have a virtual meeting you know i've got got a break at work but i don't have time to drive all the way you know back back into town those kind of things so um anyway really excited about in-person meetings as well um and really relaunching with a lot of energy looking forward thank you all i took one question on buses are we observing that more kids are taking the bus than last year because we had a lot of kids being driven last year we're seeing a lot of nods it's good okay thank you dr brooke are there any questions okay so now we can do subcommittee reports uh joy isn't here to do the facility subcommittee so i'll pinch it we had two meetings just recently on the 23rd of august and the first of september as a board we have a special meeting to go through that stuff so i don't need to repeat it but i will do a brief update for the public um and for the board on one item so for the public we've had we have two big projects the vhs locker room project and the whiskey near wall project both of those have had bidding challenges right the bids came in higher than we had budgeted so we've been working through those bids making the decisions we've had to scale back the scope a little bit on the boys locker room project and we've uh we really discussed discussed what to do on the whisker wall but in the end we needed to go ask the board of selectmen for 117 000 more for the uh for the locker room project and uh 164 000 more for the uh wall projects so for the board we had the board selectmen meeting last night and joy presented with paul checkout and uh horoscope is approved both of them for the additional funding so the next step is that we'll go to the board uh finance next point instead from today and i think paul and joy will represent us as well in that presentation and then hopefully i'm not sure if that's the end of it if that's a first selection whether anything has to go back to a town meeting because he's voted referendum in the past but i don't think so but we just need to confirm the funding will go interestingly enough the funding for the whiskey near wall additional funding is actually coming from an underrun we had on one of our other school projects the control system that was here so they were able to just reallocate within a single bonding project so just project money that they reallocated so so neither of them is net additional money for the town which is good so so that's the only update i will say that dan caldwell so any questions okay all right uh consent agenda i will move up the border for the items on the consent agenda which are new hires resignations and degree changes second all right if i may i always want to congratulate our teachers uh and others with degree changes um and so they're on the consent agenda we can take a look at that there's a number of them this year so we're really proud of everybody who's had degree changes we're excited for them and then i'm going to be turning over the reins in a second to dr man to formally introduce our new world language and multilingual lingual learner curriculum coordinator that's rodrigo who will be coming to us from new town she's here tonight so can you say a few words about it absolutely i would like to um introduce catherine abraco who is here a little bit prior to her start date so um as you can see she's going to be joining us as the newest member of the administrative team um and before i get into catherine i just want to also as everyone has already done so thank everybody um for participating particularly um sharon and mr belanda mark um there we were able to have a rigorous process as we usually do and um we were lucky enough to be able to invite catherine to join us here so catherine has served for the last couple years last seven or eight years at newtown high school as a spanish teacher and recently a dean of students she also has experience serving on many school and district committees and brings with her kind of vast knowledge both personally and professionally for not only on world language but also for our multi-language learners and a k-12 perspective so we're excited to welcome catherine she will begin officially on the 30th of september but we're excited to have her with us so welcome [Applause] okay thank you welcome any uh questions on the consent agenda okay it's been moved and seconded by mrs fernandez all in favor all right it's kind of improved it's okay so now we'll get into the uh regular the core part of the agenda we have four agenda items this evening the first one is a technology update from the college of director all right good evening everyone i always look forward to giving this report at the start of the year i like to get to have the opportunity to go after the principles tell about the start of their year it's an exciting time um i'll share a couple of updates and things we did over the summer um most of this work um could obviously not be done and uh all who had a part in this seth craig who's sitting right here with us tonight cathy calavito our high school technician uh rich squires over at huckleberry uh barbara mccarthy at wisconsin and for a short period of time we actually have rejoining us for a little while susan schmidt who we brought out of retirement to help us start the school year um as we needed her so thanks to her for joining us for a little while um one person i don't always get to thank and i want to take the opportunity to do as well is denise walsh our information systems manager she handles everything power school we work very collaboratively together because a lot of what she does drives a lot of our other systems to give our accounts and roster our students and get our chromebook logins going and all of that good stuff along with everybody else who supports and helps us too the one-to-one project is a uh um it's a true team effort and so with the high school we also do have glad clatus kato help us out um and at wisconsin um steps in and help us out when we are able to and we are grateful because like i said the one-to-one program um in managing all those chromebooks and making sure that students all set is is a true team effort um so uh i decided to also go with the theme of re reset and relaunch so technology decided to also look at a way to reset and relaunch this involved redistributing our chromebooks back to the schools where they need to go if you remember during the start of the pandemic and during the pandemic we needed chromebooks at home we needed students to have them and now we have revitalized and reformatted our one-to-one program to be able to offer devices all the way through k-12 for the entire district devices stay home at center school and huckleberry we have a new program at wisconia that allows students to participate in the one-to-one program grades 5-8 and our high school program remains unchanged and students all have the option to bring their own device as well so we're very excited to be able for the first year to offer a full k-12 one-to-one slash byod program with that also we we looked to re-engage with some of our vendors um we had a little bit of a break from our data privacy law during uh coven in which we were able to work with vendors and so now we have to kind of reset our agreements with our vendors and we continue to work on that making sure that we're entering into our agreements and offering quality services to our students while protecting their data and information as well if you remember i gave a report back in the spring i talked about a cohort we were joining with the state of connecticut to develop a technology strategic plan the timing worked out perfectly this was a state cohort developed by the commission of educational technology with the state we are doing the district strategic planning right now through the fall and so we had an opportunity along with 14 other school districts to join this cohort we have a small group that participated here in district over the summer they volunteered their time to join the cohort meetings and it is appreciated the technology committee we had some people volunteer their time as well this summer to work through a district readiness survey that we're getting ready to submit ahead of the september meeting i will say they tried to get a cohort going some progress in the summer but with a lot of vacations throughout the state and time off it was slow and steady but we have a meeting next week with the state and we're looking forward to a november finish of the technology strategic plan as of now and so that's very exciting technology committee's excited folks that are on it very excited and we're looking forward to bringing that to the board this winter the other thing we focused on this summer i've been talking about it a lot cyber security i mentioned it during our security demonstration and meeting we implemented securely which is our student filtering and monitoring solution for chromebooks using student google accounts whether they're here in the district or at home provides better safety and security of not only our devices but also student activity online tomorrow's the big day we get to turn on for the staff multi-factor authentication we've been working since the spring to do that it is a requirement now of cyber security insurance uh it is very very important as we have the obligation to protect our data our systems and all of our operations um quickly multi-factor authentication for those who don't know requires a secondary device to acknowledge who you are and allow you to log into a machine device google anything like that staff i got to work with each school staff during our first couple days back um very very positive everybody certainly understands um it's an extra step to log in once a day to do this but we all understand how important it is um and so tomorrow's our big day to turn that on um throughout the fall we'll continue to look at cyber security protecting our environment looking at um new um endpoint protection on our staff devices and then you know more encryption within our network as we work through that ever-changing field and then finally the biggest thing we worked on this summer and i do have an update on it is i know the board is aware from um our meeting back on july 11th is our canada lake technology package um a very big undertaking by many people um especially i will have to give him credit um rob tenzen from arcadis um helped us out um very very very helpful um in helping get that technology package through um you also was in the package the bids actually went out on friday afternoon and so we've been sharing those outlet vendors they're public we have a mandatory walkthrough with vendors tomorrow at three o'clock where they'll get to see the school ask their questions we'll find out who's bidding on the projects um we're going to close all those on september 22nd and hopefully quick turn around make some quick decisions and then start scheduling and planning everybody to come in for the big opening on january 3rd so it was a big undertaking a lot of people to thank there um and frankly at this point now i'm just excited to see it all get installed and turn on and so that's all i have for tonight it was a great very busy uh but great start to the school year and we look forward to the fall and january third awesome thank you and i'm looking forward to that technology in fact if it was fun hearing all that fun stuff that's going to be broken into the school so yeah i think we'll have to find a way to uh to do some testing in december when uh we get to turn it on especially that blue system all right thank you um and just so the board knows and for the public area just don't step down for a second um another person with a degree changed recently he's getting embarrassed right now eric hoffman um earned his master's degree this summer in educational technology so congratulations [Applause] all right so next up is a facilities update and i'd like to invite dan caldwell up to the podium to give us an update on all the different facilities projects i just want to start off by saying that typically on wednesdays tara and i will call each other and decide what we're going to wear i want to start off by saying this is a busy summer around the district we have a number of projects going on i have 10 to 12 that i'm going to touch on this evening i'd like to start off by saying with the comments from the principals on startup school that they mention our custodial and meet the staff because throughout the course of the summer they do a tremendous job at rehabilitating rejuvenating our 461 000 square feet of schools and we'll just convert that that's about 10 and a half people for school that our teams take care of and dress up and get prepared for them thank you for thank you all for acknowledging the hard work that they put in for us so we have a number of projects probably a little help perhaps but give it a second it'll come there it goes um [Music] and that work included demolition of existing walls and floor finishes new fixtures and going back into restoration including insulation uh ceramic tile floors new wall finishes uh some painting masonry other forward placement screen like tile only plumbing fixtures with hands-free chambers bathroom partitions led lighting uh we've eliminated paper towels by installing electric hand grinders so it is a very nice addition to our bathrooms that have not reached aspirationally as we would like but they look terrific if you have an opportunity in their way or at night and take a look that project is complete with the exception of a couple of new pencils trim pieces that supply from supply chain issues that have held up the next project is also a high school project which is our hvac control project that is by far the largest and most far-reaching project that we have going on this is a project that's designed to give us control of our system and allow us to monitor what's working at better diagnostics and so that as we move forward we can give a better comfort a healthier environment for our students and staff um at the moment the contractor started working on that project as soon as school led up last year they've been working all summer now that students have returned we're shifting gears and putting a second shift on installation so we're not interfering with classroom work and disturbing the students as we proceed we're already starting to take over the control with the new allergen system which will run the controls we expect that we'll have full control of the heating system by first or second week in october which is when next on my list was the boys locker room bob had touched based on the status of that looking for proper funding and getting ready to continue to move forward with that much needed project we also here at the school uh did a roof repair over the main office it's a long time problematic area about a thousand square feet of roof was replaced it's taken down to the deck it has been restored that project wrapped up at the end of august uh it included new roofing um new flashing on the parapet walls and uh new installation and so forth and that will fill up was to take place also contributed to failed insulation which had created some cleaning situations winter we also have a guidance wing roof replacement project this project was uh was an alternate on a previous roofing project that incorporated the athletic area of the school it's moving forward now we have recently gone out to bid and as of today the architect is reviewing the bids and we'll be looking at the middles and getting ready to move forward with that a lot of concerns about supply chain issues with roofing projects um but in speaking with contractors we feel that there's a very strong possibility that we can move forward with this before uh before winter from the control of how close this closeness there's also a media sensor air conditioning project the air conditioning in the high school media center has been failed for a little over a year and currently it is with the design team getting specifications put together to go out to bid problematic on that is the availability of equipment we understand there's as much as a 14 time on getting air conditioning in the good news is that the heating end of the system is still functioning so as we move forward and when it cools off we'll be able to provide a little better level of comfort and we have been in the first first couple weeks of startup gymnasium floors here at the high school both a large and small gym or a brief order finish this was an in-house project completed by our maintenance and custodials they finished it looks like a mirror they did a fantastic job and that will make our athletes look better when they're on at the middle school it was mentioned earlier that there is an electric surface replacement project and our update project that project contract has been rewarded there is a almost a 12-month wait time on the switch here that we're looking for so a project that we hope will be done this summer looks like it would be a project for next summer however the contract was awarded so we could take advantage of some some savings before there were really large price increases so that project moves forward another electric related project that took place at wilson middle school is back in august there was a lightning strike an underground electric service between the street and the back of the building every source came in it is a primary airline so every source came in and replaced the underground service from the street all the way around buildings the good news for the schools is that that project was not never sourced the same storm also also also got a water pump at the middle school and that was replaced by our water system operator interruption to service based on that and the last thing on my list is the gymnasium veneer restoration project or the audio mass wall as we've all come come to know about and i mentioned earlier that that continues to be in the works we've been waiting for an engineer's report on some some existing conditions that we did not become aware of until they was completed so that report came in like this afternoon and i had time moving forward um we reviewed several sample uh rfps for public condition studies and we're taking peninsula right now taking pieces from several of them he's working on that and dan's going to be providing him with the floor plans for the high school and the school we're trying to get that issue within the next couple of weeks the way mandatory walk through the buildings and then he responds about two or three weeks after that so once awarded we probably wouldn't even start the actual inspection like deep inspection which so this is deeper than what techton did maybe five years ago yes yes and are there any questions for dan thank you for the very thorough update appreciate that all right next up kevin let me stay up there next two topics are yours except this food service food service contract for the 2022-2023 school year as recommended by director of business and operations so uh ken why don't i turn it over sure so the rfp template is actually provided by the state and we are not really allowed to deviate from it uh we have to fill in a lot of data on it we are about to make addendums to it afterwards this conference approved but it has to be all approved by the state the rfp uh basically the rfp response from the food center service management company becomes the contract so the rp was sent directly to eight different food service management companies and posted online it was viewed by five other companies besides those eight two companies attended our mandatory pre-bid walkthrough the uh whitson was the only company to actually submit a proposal um the term of the contract is for the the 22-23 school year with four possible one-year menus and then we would the contract has a break-even guarantee so there's no impact on the operating budget and we have been happy with what's in the service over the years and we're glad the prices of food in terms of what students are charged or grants are charged as the case may be uh did they go off at all in this contract or not we have not raised our food prices to our students in the time they've been here six years and that's more continuing correct great and the program has actually been doing quite well and the contract document's been reviewed by jewels um that's why and and more importantly by the state they say have the final say on the contract any questions any post so next up is the transportation hunt i believe that the board approved the five-year all-star transportation contract beginning in the 2022-2023 school year as recommended by director of business and operations ken post by mrs fernandez so in this case jules working with our old contract developed the rfp uh sent it out to six transportation companies uh four companies sent in questions in writing which and typically when companies send in questions we send the responses back to everybody who we invited to bid so that was done and those responses were shared with all six companies uh two companies submitted proposals uh all-star transportation our current provider was the lowest trader and we did go over those results with the finance committee back in the spring the contract is for five years uh as dr girl mentioned before with the fleeting new buses the increase in cost for the first year was six percent and then roughly four percent in each of the next four years so the contract we have is consistent with what the finance committee reviewed yes [Music] okay that's the end of our new business uh we have no old business uh there is no public comment um so right we're up to the kenwood lake elementary school building project and um okay um so in terms of construction all of the stairwells and some of this was repeating but uh all the stairwells except for that main one in the hallway um space is taking shape and it's important to note in case you guys haven't already saved the date the 20th of this month is when we will get to tour the facility with board of finance and border selection um in terms of technology also kind of repeating over here eric but the technology package has been approved by the state the bids already went out and then and the mapping of room numbers and the keying system for them are also currently being worked on uh in terms of furniture and equipment all of those items were ordered back in april so we are awaiting delivery for items that were procured during that ff phase and in terms of moving we are waiting on a schedule um but the moving contractor has been chosen and so we're just waiting on an updated timeline from omg very exciting questions i think the last time was around six o'clock because the nbc meets at seven usually at huckleberry um and dr p is well aware of that so we're making sure that is all worked out with that we're already talking about that and um by grade level i think it's something's working out so there should be a way to park down the elected officials to park down by the trailer okay okay thank you um daddy what uh i was thinking i would try to summarize the back to school updates from all the principals and dr grill and maybe really highlight that everything is really back to normal and in-person meetings and kids eating in the cafeterias and getting all their jobs back at center school and huckleberry so that was very exciting next i thought it would be helpful to recap dan's facility update because there was a lot in there and i think most people probably don't follow that when we go through our budget updates and everything so that was a lot of great detail and then third i would recap the cles update and the progress on construction because i think people are always looking to see that update that facilities kind of standing out just because there's so many like big projects that people are aware of so it'll be good to kind of maybe highlight that this week oh yeah okay thank you um the upcoming events okay at center school first grade open house is wednesday september 14th at 6 30.
