well you don't say how much insulation you need to have you don't say what the windows should be you don't say it's got to be passive house if all you did was say hit a blower door test that's going to resonate with a developer because a developer is going to go I don't like leaky buildings I'll make my building tight well guess what that developer is going to realize very quickly your crappy double pane windows are actually leaky so they might actually look to a better quality window and so forth and so on it it will affect how and it will not cost them a lot but it will dramatically affect how they look at designing buildings and um you know the quality they will see it immediately they will see me immediately so anyway look for leverage points is what I would say great guidance um and by the way as far as paradigms you know I admit I have my own paradigms and by paradigms so um it is not to blame anybody this is just to Tim's point we need to find these leverage points to pry open these paradigms that we all that we all lives with or live um and affected by and just I would like to wrap up um Ken Garber has shared some of this with us before he called in earlier since the E20 plan was approved if we include the 320 Garden Apartments at the village 849 additional residential units are going in burning natural gas um so this is not just about passive houses it's just you know the all-electric portion of that um but you know sometimes people are using well we have to burn natural gas in order to make this affordable and we've sort of blown that out of the water so 849 new residential units four hundred and fifteen thousand additional square feet of Hotel space and an additional 130 000 square feet of industrial space all is burning natural gas and that combined is going to basically offset all of the solar in the solarized program that today all of the solar that's going to go on City buildings and half of the solar that is going to go on the city's landfill landfill project so that's that's the consequence so we're doing OSI is doing great things but we're we need to find these leverage points to not permit that kind of development going forward we really have to if we're going to meet our Net Zero Target in 2030 which is tough enough as it is so well but thank you thank you very very much we have an agenda item on here which is something maybe we don't have to talk a whole lot about because I think Tim gave us a lot of guidance and we have some thinking to do based on what Brett presented to us but we have an agenda item on here and so I'll open it up for discussion um and that is on potential resolution from the energy commissions and our recommendations regarding sustainable buildings so what we want to do is plant a seed that the energy Commission potentially on its own potentially in collaboration with the Planning Commission possibly with the endorsement of the environmental commission think about these lessons learned from Tim about other lessons learned that we can lean elsewhere and put these into a resolution and serve our function as a commission which is to advise City Council on policy that is our role and I think um a resolution that takes some of these points is something that would do uh a lot of good and being effective means of changing the conversation um across the city but particularly with decision makers in both the Planning Commission because they make they are they are afforded decision-making Authority in many cases and then finally with city council so I'd like to open that up Missy I don't know if you want to comment anymore on that because this was sort of your idea of wrapping this up with this discussion and then I'll open it up to everybody else and Tim and everybody else please feel free to chime in yeah thanks thanks so much Tim and thanks chair mersky right so you may remember at a previous commission meeting we took a stance as a body on a particular development and that is generally frowned upon uh in the process we gave the petitioner no time to respond or take our feedback and so instead of going on one-off uh you know recommendations on what we like and what we don't like we've been asked if if the commission has a stance as a whole that we should present that stance through a resolution for Council for the Planning Commission and for others to be able to point to and have consistency across all developments so this was something we talked about post that particular discussion and as an opportunity we certainly don't have to take but it seems like we have interest uh as at least some individuals to have that discussion and this is just the beginning of a potential resolution would either of our council member liaisans liked away in on this go ahead council member Briggs I mean I I think this is really important I think that especially um working in collaboration with um Planning Commission on this issue um it's having this uh a clear guidance to council about um would be would be very helpful and I think it's much more useful than going project by project comments from anyone else um council member Adina I I don't have much more to add to that other than what councilman Briggs said but just to concur um I think it I think it's obviously helpful I think it's the role of this body to provide that that policy guidance um and I certainly agree to the extent that it helps kind of weighing in an individual product projects and rather provides kind of a base level of of guidance I think that's all [Music] right other comments words wisdom questions councilmember Briggs again just one final thought um it's great for the commission to be developing it I assume that it would be most productive to be done in consultation very close consultation with staff in terms of um Implement you know recommendations that are easily implemented agreed completely and that staff includes not only OSI but includes the Planning Commission or planning department of course um Missy go ahead yeah I appreciate that last comment from customer brigson was thinking that the discussion would continue over potentially multiple meetings but getting a sense for the kinds of things you would want to see like encouraging self-facing Roots uh is one thing that christer cover brought up you know so I think we're in the very beginning of generating those kinds of ideas so thematically we can start putting them you know pen to paper and see what that actually looks like in practice so I would say um where I sort of saw the discussion tonight being was nothing that we have to stick to just be getting like what I heard this seems interesting and putting ideas forward in terms of process I recognize um we're going on two and a half hours here um so what I ask everybody do is um sleep over or before you go to sleep tonight um either way um jot down your ideas jot down some tonight jot down some tomorrow um share those with Missy and me or me you can actually share them with the whole Commission because that may um you know we have a group email address um so that oh we can't do that yup because good thank you thank you share them with me and Missy um and um um then we'll start to maybe um put some talking points together that we can then use to approach Planning Commission and staff and Leadership to start maybe thinking about whether or not um we can put a skeleton around a a resolution and then develop that over the coming weeks and possibly a couple of meetings how does that sound thank you for the shaking of heads council member Briggs and Missy Tim thank you very much we really really appreciate it um soon so um any presented once before so he's been a great resource for us here in Ann Arbor and we've learned a lot from him good luck with all of this we want to see an onion Flats building in Ann Arbor one of these oh that'd be great all right see y'all thanks okay so let's um ran down the meeting here we have reports first of all from OSI and then from Commissioners and council members uh yeah never never dull moment uh here at OSI I would be honest I didn't start with we're in the middle of the plant forward challenge so it's not too late to jump in uh there is an event if you just are Zoom hungry after this you can jump over and join a discussion but we're running a week-long challenge a few hundred Ann arborites that spans all kinds of things about plant-based diets who's providing them how you cook them and we even have a little cheeky idea of working with some of our residents to create an a20 recipe book that highlights some of the great things that people can make so uh please feel free to join in on that we are also actively planning green fair for the fall second annual or second time we're doing that and we have a lot of really fun ideas to engage the community pretty actively in that space so if you know of any organizations that want to come out it's really focused on acting and what you can do and getting residents Avenues to to take action in their lives or in their Community broadly around sustainability want to share that at last council meeting council did approve a contract with five lakes energy and their sub New Gen strategies and solutions to work on the energy options analysis which uh is many things uh there's a narrative right now that it's one thing it's many things uh looking at kind of all of the different Pathways that we could pursue to achieve our goal which is the council directive of 100 renewable energy power in our community so we're really excited to see how that analysis uh moves forward and we're interested in internal Contracting so that work will start shortly we are actively fundraising for Bryant we just submitted a grant yesterday another Grant goes in tomorrow and then working on a large geothermal Grant that's going in shortly still really focused on making that the first fully decarbonized neighborhood in America and we just continue to get so much interest in that project uh we need we need to land the dollars of the transition from planning which is where we've been and been successful in fundraising into actual implementation to see the full departmentalization happen in practice um there's a whole bunch of other things that I think lastly I'll just leave you with a reality that our office is down a third of our staff or will be shortly we had a retirement in the office and two team members have been poached by Private Industry dang it uh which is going to continue to happen as the team is successful uh people are going to get offers all the time and we've been very lucky in holding on to folks but I share that broadly to say please send folks that you know to the city's website we will have two openings uh available shortly we're one is already closed and also thank you for your patience uh right now our objective is not to let the glass fall drop but all the others are gonna have to bounce for a little while while we work on capacity thanks Missy uh council members yeah I can uh that really big one is that the last council meeting uh Council approved the uh disability study for the uh Municipal energy utility and sustainable energy utility um side by side um and so we are moving forward with that thanks to Missy and her team for all of the work that went into to to that process um uh because my mind has been wrapped up in renters commission recently our new renters commission has has uh taken off and gotten to work they I believe have had two spec or two regular meetings but actually have met uh four or five times already because of special sessions to get themselves up and running um I bring this up because they have a long list of items that are priorities for them but as as this body continues to think about ways to collaborate with other commissions and Boards if there are things in particular that you think uh rise to the level of interest for the renters commission um I am sure they would be happy to talk to you and add those things to their list of priorities ongoing priorities um and then this is also just kind of tangentially related but I I think I saw it today that the city is also looking for folks who use the city website for information on uh trash Recycling and compost to participate in an interview I don't have much more details other than that but I believe I saw it posted on the city's social media so if that if you fall into that category and would be willing to get some time um I think they are looking for folks uh commissioners any news or updates to share um I'll just say briefly as liaison to the environmental commission um the last meeting was dedicated to water quality issues particularly related to the Gelman one for dioxin plume and then most recently the release of hexavalent Chrome from tri-bar Industries Up in Wixom in previous releases that they have had of um pfas and pfos chemicals so not really directly related to anything that we're doing but it was an interesting meeting with some really good background information so you might want to listen to that if you're interested or take a look at the slides um anything else any work group updates cells that takes us back then to our last group of public comments and public input so this is an opportunity again for members of the public to provide up to three minutes of comments if you are watching on CTN please call 888-788 -0099 [Music] or 877-853-5247 and enter meeting ID 956-87-187876 this information is also on the agenda and video feed City staff we'll select callers that have raised their hand one by one using the last three digits of your phone number in order to electronically raise your hand to indicate your desire to speak please press star 9 on your phone you will hear an automated announcement that the host is allowing you to speak and when speaking please move to a quiet area and Mutiny television or background noise and then finally state your name and your address at the beginning of your comments just about 30 seconds next point on the agenda is items for a next agenda so start thinking about that we're going to wait Alex just a few more seconds see if we got calls coming in and then you'll be first up so there we go I see one hand raised yeah um caller ending in zero one zero thanks hi this is Wayne Appleyard former uh 26 year member of the Ann Arbor energy commission um I was involved with the 2012 climate action plan which was 10 years ago and uh have been following everything uh ever since I want to First congratulate Uh Kevin Garber on continuing to try and push things forward and uh Illuminating how poorly we actually are doing with getting off of uh fossil fuels and I'd also like to thank the McDonald's for all of his work and uh his excellent presentation he's doing wonderful things and we should be copying those there um somehow I don't think people are getting we have a climate emergency and in an emergency you have to do things that you wouldn't ordinarily do um Bob berkebile just got the he's an architect well-known who's involved with some of a lot of the early work with getting the AIA and energy work and he recently received their Kemper award which is the highest award you can receive the AIA and when he was interviewed he basically talked about how if you look at the ice sheets in Greenland and uh Antarctica we're not talking about 10 years ago 10 years to fix things we're not talking about a couple of years and so we really need to assume that this is an emergency and I'm going to suggest something really radical that um the city proposed no new gas hookups basically say we have to Electrify all new buildings and uh yeah it's going to mean that some developers go away it's going to mean that some developers may try and sue you but um you know health safety and Welfare is what the city is supposed to be all about and what's worse than climate change as far as that's concerned so uh realistically it would probably take them a couple of years to go through the courts to combat this in the meantime you've done something otherwise it's just going to continue as usual you know yeah you know Brett talked about it it being a challenge it's not a challenge it's an emergency so we really have to um think out of the box and say no to combustion and um look holistically at to do some not only the carbon footprint of new buildings as far as what they're going to consume after they're built but also um what they what they consume or what they produce in an embodied energy during their constructions that we should be looking pardon 30 seconds that's enough yeah thanks thanks thank you thank you for your comments explain okay very good so um moving on to agenda items for the next meeting Alex I think you raised your hand yeah thank you I'd like the topic of hydropower restoration at Gettys and Argo dams to be included in the next agenda it's like this kind of project could provide reliable and renewable energy for the proposed seu and recently the inflation reduction act also extended the renewable energy tax credits available for new and expanded Hydro power generation on existing dams for projects that began before 2025 and I know that in 2008 there was a study in the hydropower restoration and I think we could maybe use a new one to evaluate the current level of feasibility great suggestion I don't know if we'll do it in the next meeting but certainly it's important that we take it up and as you point out it would be a great base load for um the city of Ann Arbor so that's that's something anybody else have any other ideas that you'd like us to consider for future um agenda items sure can I ask a clarification um is it what we already have for hydro are you proposing we look at expanding that Hydro well we have go ahead Alex you want to comment or yeah Argos and Gettys dams don't have hydropower right now they used to and I'd like us to look into reintroducing major power and the feasibility so we have four games two of them have power and two don't There's an opportunity to upgrade um the capacity or the efficiency of the um generation that we currently have so um any any other ideas yes go ahead commissioner Macomber um did we queue up next steps for talking about um uh how we could do something like the passive house um planning uh that the presentation was about so that idea is um something that Missy and I are going to talk with Shannon and Brett about to see how we collaborate when we collaborate do we have a joint meeting um do we as I mentioned before work a little bit on the resolution and put together a skeleton of that where ideas from all of you would be appreciated or anybody else that's been listening in um so um yeah that will be definitely something that we will either addressing the next meeting or in a coming meeting as appropriate um based on what we um ascertain here and do in the next couple of weeks council member Briggs just uh knowing how difficult it is to join commissions for joint meetings and talk about kind of this and maybe obviously we've this is a recording I think hopefully um Brett can share that with all the planning Commissioners and encourage folks to watch that presentation and then maybe they can have it as a discussion item on their agenda um as something to you know how they would like to work with energy Commission on an idea like this I mean I think that might be if there's a and need to come to a joint commission meeting that's great but there may be opportunities to to move it forward more quickly if we just if we don't wait on that right anything else so um just before we adjourn I want to um recognize two things um I want to remind everyone that the climate millage is going to be on the ballot on November 8th and I would encourage all of us to do what we can to Advocate and support that there's a website um I don't have it off the top of my head missing maybe I mean we had a presentation I think um from Jason frensel if I'm not mistaken um but um I I want to encourage you to to get the word out and to encourage others to uh to hopefully vote for and support um the the millage so that we have the resources to be able to enact a plan a plan without resources is we know is really not going to be successful so it's really important and the other thing I want to do is acknowledge um Missy tonight and um she's we know she's great and she always multitasks but she's also a single parent tonight she's taken care of her child she's taking care of dinner she's um administering this meeting so thanks Missy for doing a great job again in so many different ways that we don't see it so with all that said um thanks for everybody's participation tonight it is 8 42 and um this meeting is now adjourned have a great rest of your evening thanks

it's the only morning meeting because that evening we have our meeting and policy will meet at six o'clock so that's why we need to have a finance meetings that's why we we're doing it in the morning Joe and that's all right missed the time once again so Donna and I have been working on the past several weeks to bring a proposal to you for an additional person in our central office um as we've talked as a leadership team you've encouraged me to take a look at central office and to bring to you uh what the request would be because as I'm um leaving a superintendent at the end of the year one of my main goals is to make sure that systematically we are as strong as possible um due to the recent events with our town at cotton leaving and some other Personnel issues that I will not go into publicly um I want to bring this uh position forward with now with more of a sense of urgency um so I just passed out um the job responsibilities of this proposed position which would be known as uh an administrative assistant accounting clerk to the Board of Education business manager so this would be a board of education employee alone not a shared position and this position would assist our business office in fulfilling the responsibilities that are listed here and if you want to briefly um briefly explain a little bit more about him or such a position from your perspective uh well first of all I think this person uh would be able to help not only me but all of us uh you know during our stressful times uh so I want to stress that it's not just for me it's all yeah running itself a lot right it's it's the office um but I think you know there's several things that um you know even though I managed to keep up with things over the last year you know you know uh I think there's things that um I could do more on you know help you know be superintendent me uh and uh and John as well uh in my capacity whereas you know I'm I'm sitting here doing some other littler things that really you know somebody else could really do and help out and uh just make the the process smoother I think um uh one of the things that shared services was supposed to do but has has not done was also uh cross-trained in payroll and accounts payable um and they just don't have the capacity to do that so this person would also be that person uh and maybe even stretch down the the road PSIs to back up because there's only one person that does each of these functions around and when that person uh you know whether they're sick or out with you know covet or getting married or whatever whatever the case may be if they are out there's no one to do that except for me of course but uh so you know I think that that would help in a lot of different capacities even when you know if body is out or lends out or whoever's out uh you know would also bring a presence in the Board of Education to help answer the phones and kind of organize things and uh you know have someone there uh to you know receive phone calls and customers and yeah but I don't want you to undercut the position because it's definitely needed the um shared position doesn't work it frees you up to be more the financial planner for the board that we're what we're looking for to be able to do forecasting for us to begin to to take a look out two years and three years from now as we go through a building project and the things that we're going to need there so we we need bench right and we don't have it and you know I've been I've been following this since the January before I was even elected and I I was wondering how it was all getting done uh and and really I've said to Kevin earlier on in June I said I want to get into forecasting and and Donna is just um just swamp so I love forecasting too I know so so I think that this this plays well for uh administrative staff it plays well for the accounting area and plays well for the Board of Education too it's something that's needed now I've already um I've already talked to support Finance members back in May saying that I wasn't convinced that these shared responsibilities are working to the advantage of the Board of Education they work well for the town but the board is two-thirds of the budget we employ the most people we touch the most households yet we're scraping and we shouldn't be scraping as a board of education so I think I think this is an important position and what I'd like to do is uh I know this is in for our first reading I'd like to take a soft vote on this too so that you know they have a job description I'd like to get them in process to begin looking for the person rather than wait two weeks approve it and then they start looking let's kind of get on it if we could so you know I'd be interested in each one of your comments to see if you can support the social Erica yeah thank you I'd like to see the job description if it's in the packet I didn't get it it is uh usually no I just asked about tonight [Music] this is just a soft soft okay uh that's a student oh sorry I passed the wrong one and here's a short one bill for you pollution I'll come back to Joe I'm in favor full support and we've had I've watched over the years a lot of reduced staff in the central office and like even I know they have a role but other Accounting Office duties there is I observed just even going down for things like they need the support so I I both support absolutely Ryan I know you don't have the job description because it was just passed out um and we'll we'll get that to you if you have any comment on it no it's it sounds I mean it's it sounds fine and reasonable I don't see you know unless something comes up between now and the final vote I don't see any reason not to go forward so the other thing you should thank you Ryan so the other thing you should know is that uh Kevin feels that uh there's a grant available for 50 of the position so if you take the hours times the the rate that Kevin's proposing here um we should be able to uh to be able to fund most about half of this uh via a grant so that would be an annual brand so there wouldn't be a clip foreign [Music] budget we go back to the board of Finance for the real oh about half of it I understand that but the other half so as we get closer to the repetitive comment from the board of finances run your budget do what you have to do and if you're coming up short give us a heads up in plenty of time you know based on and again we're going to have to look at special education but as we get closer to April and May we're going to have to give them a heads up on where we are we are the superintendent search we're making some Personnel changes um so we we could come up a little short and that'll be my job to sell them on it but um I mean I think central offices understand [Music] okay thank you okay so we have a softball we'll still take that hard vote on the 28th but I think you can move thank you thank you thank you you're welcome Donna John Claudia and I really appreciate your support thank you sure so that's what I have for now okay I think we're good until I report okay you can you can excuse yourself there's no problem there required we're gonna go for another 20 minutes 25 minutes so okay um so just two things from the board is uh we have a tripod board meeting on 10 17 at 6 PM that we have to be prepared for every board member should be there uh in attendance and the uh second thing is on committee changes so we've changed the committee meetings to meet right before the board at six o'clock um so uh on Alternate days so policy will meet in at the fourth meeting on the board Tuesday meeting and budget will meet on the first at six o'clock and curriculum is free to meet when they normally meet we um Cindy is looking to uh to move uh because you can't make the curriculum meeting so I'm going to move Cindy to policy so policy uh senior will joining policy um and we'll kind of go from there it was really it was just you and Peggy on uh who's on communication Cindy who's on Communications right soap and Peggy [Music] Jim and so we may we may move you to budget I'd like a technology Wellness command well there's there's going to be I've talked to uh actually I've talked to Erica about this and we're going to try to add technology to the curriculum so it's going to be a curriculum technology Community yeah and our meeting was September 21st at 9am and then we'll said the rest of our own sounds good yeah okay so that's it that's it from the chair okay Kevin did everybody get Kevin's goals did we pass hold down that quickly right now So based upon the board to written feedback on um goals for this year in the discussion that occurred on August 23rd what you see in front of you tonight are my proposed goals for this year that align with the Florida Board of Education goals in these discussed does everybody everybody [Music] um so I won't elaborate on each of these in the interest of time most of them are are self-explanatory um I try to be clear into the point so that um you know really no interpretation needed but with student achievement uh my most important job as the chief instructional leader of the district um and what I've already begun to do over the summer is to identify successes and achievement gaps across all student groups and subgroups and in working with collaboration collaboration with John and our administrators establish and Implement action plans to address them um also we're making sure that there will be a systematic consistent approach to the collection and Analysis of data into the presentation which I heard loudly and clearly with the principles and director of PPS present their reports we want to make sure it's done in a consistent manner with the same types of data so you can see Trends and trend lines and so forth the second major goal has to do with health and safety and it's where we're going to really work hard this year to continue to improve School culture and climate we're working in partnership with Amanda Pickett from the Connecticut State Department of Education to put together our safe schools climate plans we have a district plan we're putting together and school plans those will be on our newly updated website within the next few weeks and we're going to make sure that our systems are similar at each school for supporting the needs of students srbi strategic resource resource research-based intervention process that's been done a little bit differently in each School I want a more consistent format you'll be hearing more about that PBIS our positive behavioral intervention and support system which is which is one disciplinary approach that we have throughout our district restorative practices is another approach I'll be bringing these systematically and reporting to you throughout the year on each of these items and what's also important is that we continue to implement the board of education's equity and diversity policy this year um we're planning to conduct some feed from some focus groups to get feedback on how we're doing in that area and to continue with some Community conversations last year continuing the build off of what we talked about last year building infrastructure and grounds um I think that's self-explanatory so as you know we've done quite a bit of work at CIS and Cherry Brook Donna has pictures to prove it in the interest of time we're not going to share those with you tonight but we'll send those out thank you very much Donna we know we have work to do at the high school right the high school grounds look pretty bare we need to improve the look there and we already have plans in place for that so this will remain a focus the cleanliness and maintenance and upkeep of internal and external building grounds school grounds throughout the year also important I'm going to work with you to establish facilities feasibility committee uh made up of various stakeholders to look at the infrastructure needs um for the future thanks to pound number one our curriculum needs how should our students be grouped together by building and secondly based upon our growing enrollment needs from our space study that we did last year so that will be coming up shortly I'll be working with the town because there are some legal requirements for how to go about doing that and then finally policy um of course I'll be working closely with Joe on the policy committee we decided to update all policies 15 years or older and to make sure we revise those policies in conjunction with current legislation which we will do okay I'll stop there for your feedback your questions anything I left out so because this is a first reading it's the first time you're seeing it let you digest this a little bit and then we can take it up further on the 28th unless there's something that's glaringly um needs some thought you know right oh you you can't see these either so sorry all right no I promise I'll get you things out ahead of time so this doesn't happen I'm sorry Ryan so the idea was to uh to get down to four goals it's a superintendent I mean within that there's some bullet points but for him to get down to some specifics for us and I think he did that and I think we'll we'll be able to ask you some questions all right okay thank you for considering these all right on consent agenda uh approval of the minutes can I have a motion for approval dominance thank you very much all those in favor um Family engagement coordinator presented at the last meeting this is a combined position [Music] um [Music] Choice position coming together right any other comment on that thank you along with the additional responsibility of money engaging our students and Families this position any questions on it [Music] second Felicia aim for the discussion on the position right I'm sorry you vote Yes on this yeah okay thank you thank you you know we've already had several people reach out to express okay final reading for you uh Orlando music trip that um we gave a soft okay to I think she started working on this one already and she's been doing some fundraising tonight is the uh final reading to approve that trip on the 13th through the 17th the uh the itinerary is in your packet um and she has to sign the contract and get this off off the floor so um any questions no you know uh can I have a motion Erica Felicia any further questions on it all those in favor I'm opposed okay goes okay we had the first reading we kind of gave Jeff a kind of a winking knot here but the first reading of the eighth grade middle school trip to Washington DC that'll come back on the 28th any any further questions on that from the superintendent all those in favor oh I need a motion sorry Tim you want to make a motion Kim and Joe any further discussion all those in favor aye okay all right we have two more things uh one is is the first meeting of the superintendent goals uh I need that as a first uh first reading I need a motion on that thank you Erica second Russell any further questions on the uh superintendent goals all those in favor I opposed okay and then um the first reading on the on the central office clerk it's item F it's not on your packing but we need that is a first reading motion Ryan you want to make a motion thanks Ryan on the first second we should thank you Felicia any any further conversation discussion all those in favor I opposed yeah Miss okay right board member comments does the board want to bring up anything that was not said tonight or would like to make a point of anything that needs to be made that we're missing okay we're dead can I have a motion to go into an executive session for the purpose of a Personnel matter and a superintendent and uh born superintendent search will invite the superintendent to stay memorable motion thank you Cindy him on the second all those in favor okay thank you Kara okay mr hopkins yeah mr kurzwich's president miss duncan yeah mr guthrie liz robertson uh dr soltero yes sir dr chabots is not here today uh miss man here all right okay you don't need the acting clerk so they have a motion to adopt the agenda also move on mr prisoner aye ms duncan aye mr hopkins aye ms robertson uh i am i'm going to say i but but i am going to ask later to pull that one policy out of the yeah okay will you stand and join me for the pledge of allegiance of the united states of america and to the republic for which it stands one nation okay i see that we do have public comments so i'll read the public comment notice visitors are welcome to speak on agenda and non-agenda items comments are limited to three minutes please state your name and address prior to prior to making your comments please note that members of the board may not discuss items that are not specifically identified on the agenda therefore action taken is limited to directing administration to look into the matter responding to criticism or scheduling the matter for future consideration and i see i have a request from mr jim davis to speak yeah yes sir my name is jim davis i reside here in all at three two one with sixth street uh i have um something i didn't prepare any notes something that that eats on me a lot and i when i retired from my job of 40 years i began driving activity buses i travel to very very many school districts around the state of arizona and western new mexico and into california a couple of times in those travels i went to a lot of schools and you know the the appearance of the school buildings the outbuildings the ball fields gymnasiums what not were always very well kept very well very nice to look at okay i spent 13 years driving activity buses 11 years emergency in two years you know and i hate to say it because i am i'm not a lifelong resident of all my wife was born and raised here but uh we moved over here three years ago on a permanent basis six years ago owned our home for six years and been part-time and now we're full-time residents but when i was traveling around the state and i seen the schools and i compare them to what i see here and all you know i it makes me feel very very very bad you know i do not have any children in school here but i do enjoy or i did enjoy when i was doing it being around the kids and you know i've heard on a consistent basis since i thought property here and spend some time over here that there is no pride here whether it be from the adults from the teachers from the school employees to the students and a lot of it i would say if that is the case comes from poor building maintenance ground meetings and you know i got to say i don't believe i found another school in the state of arizona that needs any i understand right now it's a bad time of year because we had a heavy monsoon so i understand that but you know the kids pull up the student parking lot is right here 10 15 cars sometimes in that parking lot the kids step out of their car first thing they see is a softball field weeds grass that tall the bleachers are right there weeds growing up from the ground up into the bleachers you know i is that gonna instill some pride into the kids of this school i don't think so you know not to demean the maintenance staff or anyone that works here and i understand the monetary issues it takes to maintain the buildings and the grounds um but you know i in you're in dr saltero's and his counterparts open interview i post a question as to what could be done to brighten this school up in the in the absence of maintenance workers we're hitting a three-minute limit oh thank you sir okay so on to informational items uh first one being governor board report of current events um i actually have something to say from that came from the law conference that's important because this is an election year it's just a reminder to myself and to everybody else on the board that we can encourage people to vote we cannot encourage people to vote in any particular way to endorse any particular party candidate or any other referendum that is up for a vote this time i just wanted to make that clear to everybody thank you very much does anybody else on the board have something to report okay and when i say that i mean we can do it out in your personal life you can endorse whoever you want to when we're in here acting as the board we're a non-partisan board so we can't from here endorse any candidate platform party or anything else yes okay if nobody else on the board has anything to report i'll turn it over to dr saltero for the superintendent's request that comes after this service um you have in front of you i gave you a superintendent requiring current events um you should have it right uh it just talks about just trying to highlight the what's been going on i wanted to uh share something with you that i don't think i have before uh what what you see on this report here is you have the data of seeking play what happened but i have at the at the end and i want to do this consistently throughout the year starting now i want to tie it and connect it to what goal it applies to that way it's just always uh my superintendent goals the evaluations in december but even after that continue to do it that way we're always on the same page of okay keeping track i'm sharing with you keeping track of my goals and how whether it's in the superintendent's report this month next month it's always connected to one of the goals so so that being said i have something there that i have not shared with you before and if i haven't is because i was so focused on taking a staff member or members just trying to build the relationships the camaraderie you know uh student achievement is critical and so is school safety but we have to have the relationships before we even get to step one and step two so what we started this year and something i wanted to start here at ho it's called fabulous friday shout outs with our ausd red raiders staff members and so every friday uh starting august 5th i've been selecting different staff members classified certified whoever it may be one two staff members one time three or four the next time we're going above and beyond really of with our red raider focus and vision of high expectations and making every decision based on on making a positive difference for the students so i just wanted to share that with you some of the people that have been recognized i mean i take the pictures myself i just ask them to go out of the classroom or they want in the classroom outside and so i'll send it out friday morning to the entire staff and i have a little write-up just why i'm recognizing them for just so that they can see why they're being recognized and so can their peers just really build the relationships to build our culture to where we're all working together we're all on the same team but also wanting them to know hey um i'm also taking note of what you're doing it makes a difference so some of the people that we have received there as you can see i have them there in front of you i first started off picking up picking a selecting team of people but then the last few times i've focused the last few fabulous friday shout outs i've been to some of our teachers uh some teachers have included uh mr rigadon mr moningo mrs sane is there for everyone to see their staff their peers and so and i put their go-to community partnerships really to establish relationships with internal uh stakeholders august 25th we had a emergency response plans review with our school district community there were internal internal stakeholders there that applies to goals we promote family engagement throughout ongoing opportunities with school safety family meetings i remember in the process in the spring the comments that i heard from some of the board members is just to have uh try and get more family engagement so we had a pretty good turnout you know if i compare it to my previous location we started out with 15 people which is a good start it's a good foundation we had a different people were there for different stakeholder groups we had a miss robertson administration and staff were there we had our fire department chief our sro is the coordinator and we also had a staff member from a helicopter news and so we just talked about the emergency response plans had some good good conversation august 30th i just want to stress this with you i i am taking serious our school safety as it's one of the strategies and one of the goals that my superintendent goals um i went to the pima county regional active shooter response committee with the pima county sheriff's office in tucson they had 11 um safety agencies 17 school districts and uh i signed up to be on these the student um the student threat assessment subcommittee and so the goal is to have a single assessment policy to be adopted by all of the districts and so i look forward to being a part of that subcommittee and it connects to go to community partnerships it's critical a lot of superintendents there is just building that those relationships that they have respect here back here at camaro september 18th arizona school board association law conference crisis communication they have some really good insight from the presenter the session um critical to follow the best practices monitor and be prepared to respond communicate regularly very critical to tell what you know when we know it it's so important to make sure before a message is sent out do we have the correct message that we're communicating with our stakeholders with the parents families and communities transparency is critical go to community partnerships and the final point i have there for my superintendent's report we had a property walk yesterday we had from the trust of emergency management services consultant jen corey and she's worked with a lot of school districts in the phoenix in the valley area uh uh gilbert gilbert higley chandler scottsdale so she came here and she was there for a few hours we did a property walk we walked the campus um i had our deputy losano with me and mr johan and we just started from uh the south part of the campus dikes auditorium coming this way we just walked the entire campus primary campus primary of a building the cafeteria and she really gave some good insight but what was really good to watch is she would just stand there next to me she would just stay stationary for 10 or 15 minutes she would just look at it and she was taking it in and she just had some really good uh insight to share with me and our team and i i gave our staff an in-person report today so they could hear that comments uh some of the comments just you know making sure everyone has their their badge top radio is critical that all of the the buildings that are around the perimeter district office school office primary building cafeteria that there's radios in every location that we can always have contact with one another very critical that the doors are always to be locked since we have an open campus she really liked how you can open them only from the inside she says this is very this is very important she's gone to other open campuses district setup setups to where she likes what she sees but she also knows that we have an open campus so that it's critical to have the communication which is why she really stressed the need to have talk radios and as many people on them strategically as possible and so we made that adjustment we always can get better and so that's what i wanted to share with you um she's been collaborating with us for a few months now and she's they're a very good resource from the trust with angelina and myself first met with her and the manager july 29th and then she also gave me some good input before our school safety meeting august 25th she came yesterday and she's going to continue to help out and i think it's a great resource she came from the outside with eyes from the outside and she saw things that maybe we didn't see because she went to the school office here primary building primary uh playground uh gates that lead from the primary playground to the football field um cafeteria cafeteria patio area the gate that leads back into the main campus area library everything she just gave some real good feedback so i just wanted to share that with you that that um and it's part it's critical and school safety is critical i was sharing that with our staff today that we've got to have school school safety and student achievement 101a and it's so critical but so are the relationships the relationship building and that's why uh that first item i wanted to share with you as well so that's for your information i also have um another document i'm going to share with you this is a 100-day plan update and i want to have us get one and pass elvis robertson here if you want to pass it down it's a bit an additional uh report for you but i i wanted to highlight i want to to have the the 100-day plan has the goals that are also my superintendent goals so i want to share with you just have everything aligned on the same page so you can see right now uh not you know not wait for me to share it with you at the evaluation or in 100 days over you see it right now okay okay he's aligning his his activity and strategies the goals are driving or driving that so it has to be consistent and i wanted to just make sure that that this is something that i want to share with you not just in the superintendent report but also the weekly updates so you can get weekly updates uh when there's the update that i provide an item that i put in there i want to make sure that i always okay show which goal this is related to so that they can always see how the 100-day plan is driving the superintendent's report and it's also driving the weekly updates and i'm giving you what goals are being focused on on a weekly basis so i just want to share that with you all right now i know the evaluations in december three months away but i think it's just good planning that you have this information right now and um the the two highlights i want to point out on the 100-day plan update pertain to a goal one academic achievement and i think it is one to the third point professional development august 31st measure of academic progress when we started the math and reading assessments from the northwest evaluation association that's very critical it gives everyone a baseline level and that's a strategy the goals that i shared with you recently i believe it was last month it's important for all the staff and now we have almost all our staff i wanted to share that with you i we are so excited we have eight of our nine classroom teachers and we have two of our three resource teachers that's huge and so this is a baseline level for the teachers to see where they are with reading math and and i also wanted to add i think the last point there on the on the back page today was a review of the results of the measure of academic progress and talking with mr casey he's been very helpful just sharing with me the insight of this assessment and they're also going to look at the move online reading so it's good planning it's it's it's right there and this is a critical part of of my goals you'll notice it's academic achievement and school safety that's where it's going to happen and then the very first point on my report was relationships you gotta have relationships to move forward to be successful and that's gonna lead to the academic achievement of school safety so that's those are my both of my reports thank you very much sir sir okay now i have a motion to adopt the consent agenda i'll move on second here mr pearson aye ms duncan aye mr hopkins aye ms robertson uh first i want to say thank you hi got it mr is the vacant classified position for custodian kelly portland mr president honorable members of the board uh kelly horton has abandoned his position as nighttime custodian his position is now deemed vacant um the administration is recommending kelly horton's position be declared back i'll make promotion i'll second it mr curtis riches mr hopkins aye mr guthrie aye ms robertson aye ms duncan aye motive passes five to zero and the next item is the certified resignation of teacher's aide helena vega mr president submitted her verbal resignation as of the state of 2022 as a teacher's aide i recommend the approval of the resignation of elena veda ahmed motion okay mr kurzwich's aye ms robertson aye mr guthrie aye mr hopkins aye ms duncan aye motion passes five to zero next item is certified employment of substitute teacher daniel power mr president daniel barra has been interviewed and reference checks completed for the position of substitute teacher for the 22-23 academic school year he will be able to start when his certification is complete uh my recommendation is the approval of the employment of daniel barbara as a substitute teacher that's our third substitute yes r's yes yes teach my tongue to do that again certified employment substitute teacher brenda montague uh mr president members of the board um brenda montague has been interviewed reference substitute teacher for the 2023 academic school year she will be able to start when her fingerprints and certification is complete i recommend the approval of the employment of brenda montague as a substitute teacher that's our court a second mr hopkins aye mr curtis which is also an eye mr guthrie aye ms robertson aye ms duncan aye motion passes five to item is the classified resignation of custodian michael fitz uh mr president mr pitts has submitted his resignation as a custodian mr hopkins mr guthrie ms robertson aye ms duncan motion is approved 5-0 next item the certified employment of custodian esther andrade campos mr president uh estranged campos has been interviewed in reference checks completed for the position of nighttime custodian i recommend the approval of the employment of esther andrade campos custodian i'll make the motion mr hopkins aye ms robertson aye mr guthrie aye ms duncan thank you mr kurzwich is also an eye it passes five to zero nice questions so when we hire custodial people and maintenance people are they required to get a fingerprint card also yes yes yes but we we allow them to come to work because the other day you said it was four weeks on that one i mean uh jason and kelly were here five minutes and you know there's no way they could have gone but uh they might have already had one i don't know well i know that we we do uh do require the fingerprint checks at the same time i believe it's a 15-5-12 statute where there's so many districts like ourselves in a very challenging position that if we don't get them we're going to lose them and stop to do the reference checks so uh that being said um this was uh they were not here very long and they i just wondered if what the requirement for that was if they had to have the fingerprint cards and we had previous conversations and more meetings sure about that before sure and so um i i get that i understand that um i'm not asking you to change practice no no it's it may take four five six weeks or longer however um if we do that before bringing some people on and the reference checks are good and we get good recommendations and lose them it's it's a very challenging thing because then what do you do but at the same time well you want to wait till that check comes back basically it's risk management it's challenging because we do have a hard time getting the right people and making sure that they stay that's right um but we're always looking at it i want to just when you guys don't mean like i'm violating open meeting laws we're getting kind of kind of pushing them um so we can understand like really precisely what well let's just let's discuss that at the end when we're talking about agenda so we don't really we actually we can do it now because well it's not really because we're talking about personnel issues right now we can discuss that at the end when we're gonna add agenda i think that'd be the more appropriate time yeah let's see you mr president i think i think with the conversation that's going on right now i don't believe that violated open meeting law but i think if we want to discuss it further it does need to be agendized okay any more on that okay then the next item is the classified employment of teacher's aide aaron donovan are you doing this correct oh we did table that one sorry about that okay next item then is the classified employment of teachers aide jennifer groves uh mr president i'm sorry we tablet we have to table it again okay okay the previous one okay mr hopkins aye mr ms robertson aye ms duncan aye five to zero enabled now we're on to the certified classified employment of teachers aide jennifer groves uh mr president jennifer golds has been interviewed and reference checks completed for the position of teachers eight for the 22-23 academic school year i recommend the approval of the employment of jennifer gross as a teacher's aide i'm a promotion curtis with his eye miss robertson mr guthrie mr hopkins aye ms duncan motion passes 5-0 okay next item is the classified employment of teachers aid has been interviewed and referenced checks completed for the position of teachers eight for the 22-23 academic school year i recommend the approval of the employment of yahaira elizalde as a teacher's okay mr hopkins mrs robertson aye mr guthrie aye ms duncan aye mr cruz which is also an eye motion passes back to zero [Applause] next item is the classified deployment of teacher's aid victoria trejo mr president victoria has been interviewed and reference checks completed for the position of teachers eight the 22-23 school year i recommend the approval of the employment of victoria as a teacher's aide i'll make a question mr curtis rich's eye mr hopkins aye mr guthrie aye robertson aye ms duncan aye motion passes by pressure next item is the classified employment of teachers aid leticia palominos cruz mr president leticia palominos has been interviewed reference checks completed teachers 8th position for the 22-23 academic school year i recommend the approval of the employment of ledicia palominos gross as a teacher's aide oh mr hopkins mr guthrie miss duncan aye mr cruz is also an eye motion passes 5-0 next item classified employment cafeteria aid tracy skinner mr president tracy skinner has been interviewed reference checks completed for the position of cafeteria aid for the 22-23 academic school year she will be working three hours per day in the cafeteria supervising students this is a very much needed position i recommend the approval of the employment of tracy skinner as a cafeteria aide i'll make mr hopkins miss duncan motion passes five to zero okay next item personnel extra pay positions mr president employees have expressed the desire to perform the designated extra paid positions for the 22-23 school year chad junior class sponsor susana leon sophomore class sponsor with danielle connolly previous previously approved it is recommended that the board approve the above employees for the corresponding position i'll second it mr hopkins aye ms robertson aye mr guthrie aye ms duncan aye motion passes five to zero okay next item personnel is pay for teaching preparation period mr president due to a change in the high school schedule it became necessary for doug sane and kevin wolfgram to teach an additional class during their current preparation period the administration is recommending that they be paid their hourly rate for the extra instructional hour they or teaching recommendation i recommend a per hour per hour payment of one hour per day for kevin wilkran and doug i'll make the motion second mr hopkins aye mr president aye ms robertson aye mr guthrie aye ms duncan aye motion passes five years okay final personnel item is the advertisement interview school security officer uh yes mr president i just wanted to um stated here a board member requested discussion action item regarding a school security officer possibly having off-duty deputies on campus during time when students are arriving for um for school departing lunch periods uh the board and administration can discuss creating a position for a school security officer to advertise an interview for um from monday to today ms smith and i did do some research this would be of course a new position we looked in some other districts and then i'll be honest i started to think about okay uh we wanted to see what what else is out there uh it seems to me from the research that we've done and she was very critical in helping me with that sunny side unified school district agua free union high school district they have campus security monitors and it makes a lot of sense because they're not just at the school through the entire campus their campus security and they monitor they have to constantly monitor the entire campus and so we have some information as far as you know that can help guide us putting the requirements together and then i also remembered i used to be a campus monitor and so making sure that that um there has to be we want to make sure we when we advertise we have the right stipulations the right requirements in place uh having a presence at the same time being able to work and and with other students work with staff and so we have a good foundation here to look at i'm looking at you know here it says the administration is recommending creating a school safety officer position from looking at what other districts do high school districts and unified districts i believe a campus security monitor would probably be more a more appropriate title just based on what a lot of other districts are doing versus what we have here because we were you know this this is new but i just want to stress and i want to share with you and and this smith and i were talking about i want to make sure that when we do it make sure we do everything right that we have the requirements there the qualifications and um it's going to be a very important position of sunnyside actually has a district pool so that might be something also we can be thinking about talking about as far as finding hopefully we can find some good qualified candidates and see you know if until that first person is here we're not going to know how they do so so working closely with dr chabots can see how what kind of work they do i mean it's going to be a very critical position and so that's just what i wanted to uh what i wanted to stress before um recommending creating a campus security monitor position i believe that's a good way to start because sunnyside has a school safety department so we can also talk with them and get feedback on how they got that started why reinvent the wheel and just get some some advice some feedback how did you guys get it started what did you do what kind of professional development because you want to have the right person who can combine yes the security component but also the relationship component the social emotional learning component all that's critical right now with uh with the post pandemic that in looking at other districts did you get an idea of how much the position pays the position can pay anywhere from right like 15 okay and that we have that so it's i think i think it's a good start because also just what i've been learning is we can get some people but we're having a challenging time keeping them so this is a position that the person that we get they want to make sure that that they're going to stay but we want to make sure that they can do the job yeah that the demands and expectations first say i got this job here and then what happens if in a few weeks we're like it's not working out we've got to just be very that's what i've learned in this time make sure we hire the right person well you know what let's partner with someone who's been doing this for a number of years and work with them and get some more feedback from them on how they made it work and what they did so do you recommend that we table this so we get maybe some a job description that's a little bit more i don't see why would table because if we sure if we approve it then he actually can go and put a job description together yeah i i i get the ball rolling i have some samples right here that once if you do approve it we can move forward with smith and i can work collaboratively on this and we can start getting this emotion so exactly what are we improving sounds like he wants to make this a position for approval position creation for a campus security monitor correct yes yes okay let's set up instead of calling a school safety officer this will be a campus security monitor position because that's what it seems like other districts are doing and we haven't done this before i just want to make sure that we do this right [Music] well i i'm just thinking you know from personal exploration from personal experience mr guthrie the monitor the campus monitor the safety monitor is more in their role as as a support to the school leadership team monitoring of walking around monitoring the restrooms checking the restrooms dismissal parent pickup drop off which which the sro has their role they're they're the officer on campus talking from someone who's been a campus security monitor and having worked in districts where you have that title it does kind of have that line of security modern district employees doing this the law enforcement officer on campus and there's a fight between two high school boys what what would this what would be the monetary can be traded i was trained as a monitor to break up a fight just trajectory okay so absolutely so the monitor would just he would be involved in oh absolutely and so if he observed somebody on the campus enacting vandalism what would be his or her role in that we're made to to to help administration as much as possible to making sure that uh whatever consequences come because discipline is a case-by-case basis whatever consequences happen they serve as the eyes and ears also for administration knowing what's going on around campus that's what they have to monitor on a regular basis i'm not against this i'm for it right sure but i watched mr kc deal with students that were physical with him right luckily he's a big guy but to me things that i've seen him have to to deal with i don't think he should if we have this position i don't think he should be dealing with that right i think that that safety that the whatever we call him or her should be the one that deals he can help absolutely in my previous school in nogales our our security monitor was healthy they're vigilant they're the eyes and ears for for administration they're at lunch duty they're in the passing periods they're checking the restrooms they're apparent dismissal they can see if the parents being or anyone is being difficult in the off their eyes and there's also the administration if they're a great resource if done correctly and with the appropriate training i would hope that they would be a protector do you know what i'm trying to say sure i i mean like if a problem comes up they can be called absolutely and that that's that's the role of my previous districts mr president campus security monitors that's what they perform and so they're they're involved as well they are they help with the school safety if we have one of those then what happens with the cameras i like that idea of cameras because no no no no i'm sorry go ahead um you can have something going wrong up here and the cameras will tell you that someone's sneaking in the back and the security officer isn't going to do any i mean he's not there mr president miss duncan you read my mind um jen cory from the trust came here she gave us some good input of where we can put our cameras at the entry and exit points we're having the rough renovation yes we have to be careful there but we can still have security cameras in addition to the security campus so just the layers of safety and and it's going to help mr casey's out there at lunchtime doctor myself we have our teachers also in the morning so it's it's a group effort i i would say mr president mr guthrie everyone is is help taking care of each other that's the look i saw today the staff members today it's it's everyone is in on this together this is a critical position who will be a strong support system for administration i'll make the emotions oh second can i just say so uh would it be okay with everyone if if this does get approved tonight um it's approved with the expectation that dr zoltar will return with a job description um and a just an explanation of how this fits into the the greater district safety plan sure yeah absolutely mr hopkins aye mr kurzwich is i miss robertson aye mr guthrie aye ms duncan aye motion pass is five to zero yes item before the board please decide on approval of the that that got tabled until table so we voted yeah no i'll make the move from the table miss duncan all right motion disabled or agenda items uh next business item is the appointment of a board of representative for the board representative for the pima county meeting um yes mr president um arizona school board association openness county means for the school board members pima county's meeting will be september 22nd at saudi unified school district the board could choose to eight out of ten and all representative is needed or b to attend and pick a representative my recommendation is this is a board decision i believe on based on monday's discussion there wasn't so much there wasn't anybody who was available to go and i kind of would like to reach out to pima county arizona school board association and let them know that when they schedule something that starts at 4 30 they're making it really inconvenient for somebody who's got a five hour round trip to get there and it doesn't seem it seems to me like something they could have also hooked a zoom link up for those of us that are more remote no man that's an option it is an option to do media that might work you know and so we've got to reach out to him and ask him if if you know one or all of us could possibly attend that meeting i think they'd only want one of us to be the representative of the board so it's a good question okay i um since i'm leaving town right after the meeting is over would not have time to reach out to the pima county asthma folks would you do that please man thank you very much so okay so we're gonna make motion that angelina's gonna contact asba about this on thursday the 22nd and then we find out if we can have somebody participate by zoom so um well we can't really table it though okay so this next week yeah it's next week can we approve based on that if somebody if somebody can say if somebody is available to do the zoom on it then we can vote on it that way if the zoom is an option is somebody available then i will i'll change the motion um angelina will reach out to school board association we're going to september 22nd meeting um it will be if they do have a zoom or other option available for representation at the meeting we will decide amongst ourselves and who's available that day to do it due to the short time constraint do we not have to decide and if not we won't have any representation there i think we have to pick who the person would be you don't necessarily have to pick but we can leave it open okay and if i think if we just left it so we're not breaking out meanwhile whoever is available contact don't you're gonna be gone contact angelina directly okay that'll work okay i'll second all of that okay uh mr perez nurtures the eye on that extremely long motion mr hopkins aye mr robertson aye mr guthrie aye ms duncan aye castor five to zero okay next item of business legendary teacher's day yes sir mr president members of the board dr nicholas comments at mr hopkins email invited aho schools to participate in engineering teachers day which will be on the 22nd of september the program was started by dr clement in 2014 to celebrate teachers the link for individuals to choose their legendary teacher will be placed on our website facebook and newspaper all teachers can be nominated currently working retired etc the website will do all the tabulations and inform the district of who was picked in their town district and so this is uh i recommend the participation of our whole school with legendary i'll make motion i'll second it but i will point out it's going to be tricky to get it to the newspaper based on what their printing schedule is and since this is going to happen in a week a little bit over a week okay next business item is discussion and vote on board box mr president ortox is an electronic board book used by the majority of boards in arizona a representative of ortox david presentation on monday study session about packages available and what works best for all the schools the decision is up to the board um how you want to proceed forward five 5-0 next item is the approval of governing board policies second reading yes uh mr president went through all the policy uh advisory on monday read through the summary so this second reading would be pretty much just me stating what i read monday's first reading the second reading superintendent's recommendation i recommend the acceptance of the attached policies upon the second reading we discussed that upon the adoption of these policies there are several of our policies that either need to be updated or need to be removed so assuming that these are are um that this is passed um i will request that regulation k-i-r-a be removed and replaced with ai-r which is the equivalent in here um k i rb be removed entirely um jica rb be removed entirely um and you all have these here um the bottom half of it from face covering down should be deleted um the that administration does as has the authority to change the regulation governing board and direct superintendent to change the regulation uh subject to a review also by the district legal council so basically what she's sharing i'm gonna make sure okay and there are a couple of these things that i'm just don't feel right voting about as a block with everything so there's a couple i'd like to pull out for individual votes kb jlcbe jlcc gbgcb [Music] jlcc gbgcb jjia and imbj i'd also like to pull out jj ibm yeah i was reading it wrong and had that one moved in with the one that i told so i guess based on that my assumption is we vote on the remaining ones as in mass first and then we vote on the individual ones after okay okay so so i'll commend my motion to approve initially with the exception right now kb jlcbe jlcc jjib jjia jj ibr and imb to be voted on separately after this initial vote ngbgcp gb gcb yes okay all right can you tell me why we should pull all that it's almost half of these um to me and every district is approving these we're just wasting the time to write it rewrite it which i presume is what you want to do i think they just want a standalone vote on each one am i correct they want to stand alone voter and everyone they're not i'm not the one that requested it so i couldn't tell you why would you like to vote each one separately if you're not going to change it i can tell you why i did because there are some that i feel are fundamentally flawed in the way that the legislature put them out i realize the district will have to follow them their laws but i feel it's also my obligation to put out that the way that they put these together is flawed so we might have we might have some that we would say yes to you would say i too some police would say no to okay so it's like basically a symbolic vote yeah it is that's that's okay you know i mean we're still going to vote on them i understand why people want to do this some people may not agree with some of these things that's okay so i don't think we have a lot of choice actually on these no but we don't but you know if some board members request that change so be it unless whoever has their voice want to be heard that's fine that's my opinion at the same time every time you vote you have a [Music] effect choice 24th the laws go into effect but that's just for your information yes i agree with this one that's good i think just did i understand why you want to do it i don't disagree with the way you want to do it but i just think that um if we have to we have no choice then i think you know just state your displeasure with those those policies which you have basically and we just vote as one and and get and get it done i mean you i know you don't agree with me running that's fine i don't care if you don't agree with them is um we all have our opinions about this obviously but any board member has the right to pull anything out of a consent agenda for any reason okay so it is what it is that's why we have you well you know you know the rules i just don't think it's necessary i mean it's it's i understand why you might want to pull something out that but it this this is the law it's going to be the law and you're not going to be able to change that you know about if i have a if i can make a recommendation on this i understand every point of view you guys all know me you know don't agree with something everybody has right to be heard i will offer a um middle ground here how about we just fold on all of them the ones we that board members have something to say on why don't we discuss those and let their feelings be known about it before we just vote on it in mass and just knock it out okay so we have already requested these pulled that pulled out for a individual vote not pulling out to not approve right okay just i just want to clarify so i understand you're offering up mm-hmm i'm trying to find a compromise here um but i would like mine pulled out so so what happens if if you pull one out and you won't know what happens at that point three people won't know what happens basically the district will be in violation of the law september 24th and that man right there they pull one of these out and it's voted no a that winds up with the law and the district the board says oh we don't want that one we're voting no on it then basically on september 24th the districts of violation law for not using that violation of the law yeah unless we violate that policy which the policy is unlocked up with the law yeah it will take effect so in essence the district would be in violation of state law set forth by the legislature and signed by the governor you see what i'm saying only if we actually break the law not having the policy in place isn't isn't freaking but that is dangerous ground and that just opens it up for trouble and i think it's gonna this is getting a lot deeper than it needs to be i understand why you guys are asking if things be pulled out that's fine but i like the idea of if there's if you guys have issues with certain policies i want something to say let's just get it out now or we should have gotten out monday but today is fine too you know we got two meetings but we've got to find some some ground we can't just beat me back and forth like this all the time but then it also leaves the only option to somebody who has a problem with a couple of these then the only option is to vote against the entire slate and if so be it that's it that's fine that's your prerogative if you if you guys want to vote no against something as a show of symbolism that's fine i understand that but i i am throwing out there i think we just pull around as a block if someone has issue with certain policies regarding the certain state laws they don't agree with let them have their time to talk about that and why that could be kept a new agenda individually so whether we like it don't like it or whatever that's just the way it is so let's just get it done let's do what we're going to do so then we'll vote on the block and assess address those individually yes i need i'm getting to that right now marshall you were the second do you want to agree to that segment or pull your second no i think you should so then the motion is on the floor i need a second i'm all second no wait marshall wait but oh i'm sorry you are you are saying you didn't want to second it that's why i asked her she wanted to pull her second port because of the chain after the champion i will not say i do want to second it but i want to vote for the whole block i know the motion on the floor as of right now is voting on as a block minus those that were brought up by all right wendy and rodney and those will be born individually after the initial vote of the remaining policies so you're the second do you want to continue a second okay i need a second also i miss interpreting okay so rodney that's fine okay so mr kurzner just i in the approval of the block excluding those mentioned by the two board members i'm an eye mr hopkins aye ms duncan no no miss robertson hi mr guthrie okay moving on to the next um round of voting we will dislodge your job you do that sorry i'm trying to keep very on track here kd was the first one to mention yes yeah just gotta find out that you don't want it in there that's what we're doing now they're gonna we have members that take issue with certain policies regarding how they're related to state laws and they have something they want to say about it get a knockout go to kb don't knock them out one or two stages [Music] okay we need a motion in a second before we can make a motion we approve policy kb kernel involvement education i need a second to approve we're voting to approve correct so we're not changing we should have been in no we can't have any discussion no discussion so i made the motion to approve it as is i just need a second part i'm so mixed up now i understand i understand so every one of these we have to have a motion and a second and then we have once we have the second then we can have the discussion tonight yes yes and then vote it shouldn't take too long and then we'll vote so i need a motion we always end up having a big discussion we always do and so i would rather state your piece and let's vote uh yeah my problem with this one it just adds more and more burden to our teachers without increasing their pay what any of their payback from some of this i know some of it is requiring them to have everything posted where a parent can come through and say oh i don't want my child learning this and this there's a value in the unification of public education and again i think it's mainly that this particular one is more burdensome on our staff and not supported by legislation not supported financially by legislation i i do i just have a administrative thing on that one there's a on page 24 there's optional language um i i want to be sure that we do that as we have in the past that's unchanged um but it says um it says optional language can be adopted in horror and heart is determined by the board um i propose that we repeat that optional language and in the event that this is this is approved any other discussion no no okay if i think for a wendy's thing to happen it would have to be one of those persons who made the motion and ended it so basically nothing's going to change with this is just where we're recognizing this right so no one's asked her to be taken out so i think we're fine not adding to it um so i'll go ahead and uh mr kurzner says i mr guthrie miss duncan no you don't want to accept the policy as it is but you said you were going to change you wanted no no no nothing's changing marcia she just why didn't i put it in my head okay i understand marcia you're upset i know i know i mean it's a waste of time eric i there's nothing we can do about that now we've already established so the policy is the policy we're not changing this policy we're voting to approve it as it is we should have it um the policy is approved four two one okay next jail cb e okay yeah that exhibit attaches to on uh no oh so yeah that's already that's already approved yeah okay got put in the block so then we're on to jlcc so where but i don't know diseases okay i will make the motion to approve jlcc for communicable effects diseases i just need a second for approval for discussion thank you mr guthrie and we should discuss one of the ones where i think the state is uh basically taking power away from the districts to make local decisions where again with things like this we have a better idea of what's going on in ajo than politicians in phoenix too but they're tying their hands with this legislation in my opinion any other discussion mr kurzwich's i mr guthrie miss duncan no you're voting no to not approve this policy yeah i i want to i want this policy you want what you said marcia let me explain what's going on he made the motion i made the motion to approve this policy i've voted because they wanted to have their statements heard on the record about why they disagree with it but we're still voting to approve it whether everybody okay so then why can't we go down and improve all of them well because we've already passed that point okay i'm sorry marcia so i mr mr robertson no mr hopkins motion passes three to two i'll make a motion to approve g gb gcb staff health and safety and there's a motion to approve i need a second thank you sir my problem with this one is the same as the one with the last one where it's taking power and control away from an autonomy away from local school boards making decisions far from the town that's being impacted by them okay anybody else okay mr kurznerjs has an eye for approval mr guthrie miss duncan aye mr hopkins no miss robertson no motion passes three to two next we're on to uh jjia jj is page 77 followed by jjigae right yes sir all right jjia intramural sports i will make the motion to approve i need a second second thank you sir discussion okay the reason i wanted this one pulled aside is because i understand why they why they are doing this but to me the way it's worded has a good chance of alienating any of our trans students from participating in any sports and that population of people are already alienated enough this is within the school where they even care what they see so um this is actually and this didn't come up i didn't i didn't notice this on monday but this is an optional policy that i don't think even applies to our school i think we all should be voting now on it it says jjia is an optional policy those districts that have intramural sports for those districts that have internal so it sounds like the legislators use the wrong word so this was basically just so we have two classrooms having a kickball game in between each other right or like florida said if we had two high schools that one high school could play the other high school yeah it's more formal than than a kickball game out on the grass but we don't have that and this is an optional policy yeah you see this more on a college note so you're saying it's one that we shouldn't even have a vote on because it's not even one that applies is since it's one that does not apply to our district we could just simply indefinitely table it i'll make the motion the table motion on there oh we do i'm trying to read this real quick so my question is then if we don't do this one then we need to worry about having to discuss on jj ibr oh well that's next so because if this one's tabled or not approved then r won't even no because that's this is intro jj ibr right but we're on jj okay well mentions it here right so jjib is the regulation that's associated with policy jjib which we'll do next okay so we have a motion in a second on the table are you still reading i'm still reading i'm sorry no problem i just don't want to miss nothing almost good i didn't notice that on monday it was a lot of problems 100 pages do you know so this one tonight would not even apply to us we don't have intramural sports am i wrong yes well i will see my motion yeah but i don't think your second heard you no well they're just again okay i'm gonna make my motion to the table this one for further review give me a second on there okay mr curtis is the eye for the table mr guthrie okay mr hopkins mrs robertson aye ms duncan duncan it is table with five to zero now we're on the jjib interest blasters quartz oh am i out here i got so much going on that's last imbs last oh i'm just i'm just going by mr hopkins oh yeah we're going to down the list jj ib in this fossil affect us voting on jj ibr so whatever we decide this one will affect jj ibr so i asked for jj ib to be cool um i understand the legal requirements right and i also appreciate the complexity of it an emotion i will make the motion to approve jjib internal glass exports which if we approve it we'll also approve incidentally jj ibr so i'll make the motion to prove tgib okay all right sorry wendy um and i also understand the complexity of it i'm a former student athlete i have daughters who are athletes i'm a beneficiary of title ix i get that but this legislation is extreme it's more extreme than the olympics requirements it's more extreme than most states and it targets our most vulnerable students our students that are most prone to mental health issues and suicidality and so of support for those students i am going to vote no we have a number of trans students um in our in our school and in our community we're going to say the exact same thing okay so we're doing over there okay so now we're going to vote to approve jjib which will also basically approve jj ibr um mr curtis says i vote for approval mr guthrie ms duncan aye mr hopkins no miss robertson no uh policies are approved three to two because you sensitivity uh page 99 of 99.

[Music] so [Music] [Laughter] [Music] he's got him you don't have to lean in no leaning in just project i call to order the workshop from bullet city elementary school board on wednesday september 14th at 5 30 p.m roll call corey burgess here amanda amen here charlene diaz here anna boyd here we are just missing ms sabrosky all right moving on to our workshop uh item 1.3 uh 2020 asb policy service advisory dr stewart mr president and board members each year asba gets their lawyers busy as soon as the legislature is done with all of its bills and submits and recommends new or revised policies so what you have here are with the exception of the policy that has to do with graduation high school graduation uh the ones that do apply to us so it's a chance for you all to go through them i did make available to you all as well the the kind of explanation notes but i thought i would touch on them a little bit for the for the public's benefit as we go through them so you know a little bit about how they might affect us as a school district and and then they i had cass put them on the agenda put the policies on the agenda for first reading tonight and then next month you would have the policies and the exhibits and the regulations and and and for consideration might be so anyway oh gosh i don't have them in the same order no no you're okay oh accounting system why are my notes not in the same order they're not in the same order that's okay the accounting system has to do i think as i recall primarily with school districts that are going to have either the county or the state do their accounting and those things so that does not affect us at all okay uh can we do can we do jrr please okay uh student surveys so uh the biggest change in this we do have this policy there is a new regulation but this has to do with times where in the past where we might have done surveys with students and had asked parents in advance for you know just blanket approval now we have to notify parents what the survey is going to be uh parents you know with a timeline and uh parents can have their children opt out okay so we have some legal advice it's not part of this but i went i was in a training uh superintendent's training that had to do with um what this could involve so there is some speculation that it could even involve situations where say the assistant principal or the principal is talking with a student about a disciplinary situation and having to be very careful about asking a question that's not directly related to that disciplinary situation so the example that we were given was you know i'm i'm doing whatever with the student students telling me some information and and then i might say you know so how are things at home can't ask that that's a survey now that's based on the legal advice that we had in that training that we should not ask that and i'm thinking oh that makes things a little difficult for counselors and in some cases maybe even for for you know principals and teachers and whatever that may be a little overkill but i will tell you that those attorneys are the same ones who help write these the policies that follow the law so it's just a procedure we'll make sure that we have the procedures in place for for student surveys official ones okay any questions about those okay uh k.i and i did include uh some little uh anecdotal notes to you in in the part that i sent you the separate part that had all of these little explanations so you would know this one has to do with visitors to schools and it essentially is saying that school boards and school districts must have procedures for allowing visitors we do have procedures they're just not as formal as this is going to require so we have procedures in all of our handbooks we'll just work on making sure that we have something that we've brought to you that is that will meet this qualification okay kb parental involvement in education and to quote from this the law requires school districts to create procedures enabling parents to request access to school district and employee electronic records that relate to their child and so there are and then there's a corresponding amendment to the parents bill of rights and and then a corresponding piece about access to library materials so they've made some significant changes in this in this policy we have already talked with our administrators for sure and will make sure the word gets down to our teachers and the rest of our staff but we've been reminding them that it is not good practice to communicate for teachers or administrators to communicate with parents on their cell phones and the reason for that is that if if we do that that is now a public record and if for anyone any reason somebody requests a parent or an attorney or somebody requests the information or what was the communication on that cell phone they can confiscate the phone and everything on the phone then is becomes public record so if if we're not doing anything wrong we probably wouldn't mind that but i don't think most of us would want to give up our cell phone for a period of time while such investigations so each of our sites in fact all of our site all of our elementary sites use dojo or synergy as the appropriate and approved way to communicate back and forth with parents and to avoid using their cell phones okay i-h-a-m-e yeah i don't think this one particularly applies to us because we don't do any family life education kinds of things but it doesn't hurt to have it in policy jlcb uh the main thing about this one is that school districts cannot require uh vaccination for um coved 19 and um and then it says an immunization must be prescribed by rule adopted pursuant to ars 36672a before it may be required for school attendance and that means for any immunization not just copin i don't think that's going to be an issue for us those usually have we already have those other things in policy and so i don't it's it's really not going to affect us much jlcc this one codifies the the fact that we cannot require masks without parent or guardian consent and um it applies also to other communicable diseases not just to copin 19.

foreign okay I'm gonna um call the meeting to order at six o'clock I need a motion to adopt the agenda I moved to adopt the agenda a second all in favor hi hi motion carries four to zero need a pledge Allegiance hmm okay does anybody have any questions on the the meeting minutes from last time if not I'll take a motion I move to approve the meeting minutes from the last meeting second all in favor aye aye motion carries four to zero um so all of you notice that we have a new member we'd like to uh introduce Jennifer Tucker yay [Applause] you want to speak with her afterwards I'm sure she'd be so excited to talk does she do a speech do we have a speech like no I'm just using I'm just teasing okay um superintendent report thank you uh Madam president uh just a couple things on the Combs Education Foundation uh back on the 23rd of August we had our first business breakfast uh what a business breakfast is is to bring in many of our businesses for breakfast uh especially those that are associated with the foundation and it gives us a chance to kind of share the positives of what's taking place uh within the The District in this case the first breakfast uh we highlighted our annual report we were able to share the annual report with everybody and they were also able to share a a positive story of a relationship with Banner Health and the middle school where we did a camp scrubs for middle school students this summer where they uh they spent uh time understanding and learning all about uh what takes place in in hospitals and so that was our first one we'll do another one in March and highlight again a lot of what our what our kids are doing this past weekend we had a golf tournament that was very successful we had 19 teams overall because it's most people don't get a chance to play encantara which is where we had it they were very impressed by the facility uh we were very appreciative of of everything that then contara did to to make it successful and more than anything else because of the business partners I've said this a couple different times but but we're over eighty thousand dollars raised for the foundation this year that will go to student scholarships our staff excellence awards and we're in the process right now of putting together what will be many grants for teachers competitive mini grants we're looking at somewhere between 500 to a thousand dollars which would then probably be somewhere between 20 to 40 grants that we would give out to teachers uh probably come out towards the tail end of the semester and into the beginning of of next uh next semester so we're still working on some of the details and then the other piece that we're working on is starting a an endowment through the foundation so that we can put some money away and continue to grow the the endowment so that we'll always have money to give scholarships and and really the mini grants we do have as a reminder that Pinal County asba meeting will be held on the 19th of October from five to eight here in the district boardroom we'll be hosting that um I would also recommend unless um the board has other commitments we're going to have to move the October board meeting to Monday the 10th but because Mr Delaney is going to be out of town on the the 12th but with Miss Tucker on board we can move it back to Wednesday and I would ask that we do move it back to Wednesday the the 12th mainly because the 10th is uh the day after fall break um and so that makes it a little bit complicated if people are out on Friday for us to get an agenda out as it is so if it's possible we'd like to move that meeting back to uh the 12th which is what it was originally scheduled for uh prior to Mrs Tucker coming on on board and so if that's not a problem we'd like to do that mama okay Mr Ray Bob are you going to be offended if we do that you just don't want me here so I want to ask a lot of questions it's okay with Bob it's okay with me we're good in terms of enrollment uh it's pretty much the the same pattern we've had before in terms of high spots and low spots the numbers have dropped a little bit uh we're off about uh 210 kids 209 kids from last year at the start of the year that was about 40 higher so so we are bringing it down uh slowly but surely but I would anticipate uh as with pastures that the the pattern will hold unless something very unique occurs so we have it broken out by by site by grade level um a comparison of the cohort to see what happened if we lost kids coming from from one year from first as I moved on to Second type thing and again for the most part a couple of different areas that we lost them but in other areas that we gained them so it's just just the nature of the Beast and then we have it by the in uh by the elementary also I want to highlight a partnership with HR with Arizona at work Arizona it's a Statewide Workforce Development Network that helps employees for employers of all sizes and types to recruit develop and retain the best employees for their needs again I think we're highlighting this particular relationship because like everybody else right now we continually need to work for employees it's competitive whether it's a teacher level or Administration and quite frankly even at the support level especially given with the raises in the in the minimum wage we find it very very com very very difficult to find employees in all parts of our organization so we're working with the private partnership here private public partnership to go ahead and utilize everything we can to make sure we get uh get our name out and get the positions that we need filled out so just want to highlight that some Student Success we had three students Baylen Bean Hunter Claire and Raquel domerand who were recognized by the PSAT and msqt and or AP exams for excellence through the national Rural and small town award these are students that would have scored in top 10 percent of the PSAT test in order to be eligible they have uh score three higher on the AP exams and they have to maintain a 3.5 GPA the PSAT testing leads to um significant scholarship opportunities when they get to be seniors so lots of times people don't understand how important the PSATs in particular the AP exams obviously depending on how the kids do they can get credit at the Collegiate level and have classes waived so we have a lot of our students that take these tests but everybody doesn't always recognize or understand how positive that is uh Middle School baseball is doing great uh they're off four four and one start and they recently beat ala Queen Creek six to three so we always like that um superintendent Hoffman uh from the Arizona Department of Education had a second round of mini grants uh to teachers throughout the state there was a concentration on teachers outside of Maricopa and Pima County to kind of spread the wealth uh the grants were up to 600 if you remember the summer program that she had the grants were up to a thousand dollars so it was a little bit less than what she did before but our district received 80 grants for over 41 000.

i would just like to thank those that did donate i appreciate that school recognition mr key favor yes before we do that though i want to clarify one thing and that's typically what happens but on the october 2nd meeting not the october 2nd but the second meeting in october on the fourth tuesday um we just decided that we just have one in october that is not false that's just the week before so i just make sure if anybody's listening they say oh i thought fall break was the week before yeah it is the week before but that's when the club and we'll start with um mrs moore has a couple and then we'll move on to mr martin and then i have a couple other from another school so go ahead and share um on friday august 26th we had our annual metro north reading celebration on the last day of school we sent home a note and challenged the calendar and challenged the kids to read throughout the summer um this year we had 24 kids return their calendar that had read and kept up with that you know keeping track of their calendar um i know we had more kids than that read over the summer those are the ones that returned their paperwork and kept count and so we do two hours of just after after school fun activities there in the terminal and then we had i think 13 i should be able to remember that number without having to look at that 13 students that did the extra challenge activities which is about 15 different activities that they do throughout the summer reading or reading outside reading um in the car just making your own court and reading inside it we had 13 kids complete this extra challenge activity so they get to go to the ymca and go swimming we stopped for frosty's at wendy's and then spend so um [Music] then we have four stuff staff members that helped with that amy sturridge sterling nicole knox chloe plywood and abby watkins and myself and then our other item to share is our little horse preschool had their site visit for our licensing and it was all green light and a great visit um and our license is in the process of being renewed um [Music] it's a lot of just paperwork for our staff and always a little bit you know unnerving because we never we never know when the grader is coming to visit and so it just creates like a little bit of anticipation and they walk through the door um but just super proud that we pass that with flying colors and that makes us eligible for on my way pre-k funding as well as ccbi vouchers which help support our family so all right well thank you all right mr martin me [Music] hey sharp creek we wanted to recognize mrs morgan blocker who is our social worker and it's just amazing to me how well organized and planned she was coming into the school year with a with a very heavy focus on the emotional and social uh help that students and families need so just want to pat her on the back and tell her we appreciate everything she's doing and she does many other things but that is her focus and she's doing a good job and the other thing we do what we do after school for fun at star trek is we have kids running cross-country we have quite a few uh elementary kids who are running for the northfield junior high cross country team and here's all of them i think if i miss any i will get this corrected but uh we want to thank hudson hawker body soar hailey bucher sheila smith adam hawkins bentley sutterby and izzy c um those are the ones i'm confident if there's any others i'll give them to you but they're putting forth effort to be at practice to get to practice as well as their parents but as elementary students we appreciate that they're taking on that step up and level and competing so we're proud of them thank you mr martin i have a few from uh mr snyder uh northfield first of all norfolk football received an exemplary behavior report from official sam he's got a very unusual name i'm just gonna say sam for now from the game against tippy valley on friday august 26th valley had an injured player go out cold on the field a long delay and eli crow number 33 for northfield organized a prayer circle for both teams to pray at center field it was a great display of sportsmanship and i applaud that young man and team for showing grace and class and then also uh mr sn snyder said thanks to mr votel and the northfield national honor society for picking up trash and put it in the cans after the norfolk home football games honor society members strive to be examples of not only scholarship but also leadership service and character helping make the things easier on our custodial staff and keeping the school grounds looking nice are great examples of leadership and service thank you and then finally from mr snyder thanks to the northfield high school art department and mr adams weeble for refinishing our mailbox container out in front of the school is very much appreciated if you haven't seen that it's got the norseman logo on there prior to that it was still really pretty interesting because they had the broken pieces of glass all glued on there but they were starting to fall off and they're different problems like that so they redid all of the mailbox so it looks nice so that is all i have for tonight now at this point we have the public comment for agenda items only always give me a chance but we'll move on to the approval of the minute from our last meeting [Music] planes i was i had a question on one just because i on bids and stuff how do we get bids on work that would get done so these projects uh when it's over fifty thousand dollars we're required to get uh bids at least three bids and then over a hundred fifty thousand we have to do the formal bid process under that steve tries his best to get two or three quotes but a lot of times depending on the type of work you don't always have enough quotes to do that so i just i see one and i'm like i thought it was a little crazy that's why i was curious if we are strict in making sure we get close yeah steve does a good job of trying to get other clothes but there is certain things that there's just not enough vendors out there or they don't get back to them i'm going to approve those claims motion seconds to approve claims all in favor say hi all right hey payroll nothing out of ordinary this would be the first pay then of the 22 23 school year for new employees and returning employees i'm statement and that you guys always review just to kind of see where our uh beginning balances were at the year and at the month and then kind of what the ending balance is in that time still holding strong almost a 19 million dollar indian balance overall there aren't any questions the next thing we need to do then is the budget hearing and if it's like every year i actually have to open up a hearing so i declare our budget area officially open all right so we won't spend a lot of time on this because we've already done a lot of preliminary things at board meetings but this is just kind of to wrap it all up so this is our 2023 budget hearing it'll cover these funds or what we have to submit a budget for to the and get approved by the dlgf so just as a reminder two main funds out of those four are the education operation funds primary uses for education are instructional related operations are more overhead costs capital projects transportation bus replacement those type of type of overhead costs primary revenue source for education fund is state dollars provided by the state and operations then are dollars that come from our local property taxes funds can be transferred from education operation fund um no more than 15 percent is allowed we do transfer monies over from the education fund operation fund to cover some of those expenses because our operational fund revenues do not support all of our operational fund costs so this is the budget estimate that we broke down in those preliminary board meetings for a total of 26.9 million dollars and those just those four funds and you can see from the graph how that is broken down education fund like i mentioned is supported by state dollars state funding is the biggest source of all that we do receive some other state source funding from summer school transfer tuition those type of costs transfer tuition comes from other school corporations but again that's based off of state funding so when we look at our estimated revenue for education fund for 2023 you can see that we're estimating about 16.8 million dollars of revenue for our 2023 budget uh and we know that about 2.2 million dollars of that will be transferred over to operations fund so you can see our primary revenue source is state funding makes up almost of the dollars that that go into the education fund as far as expenses are concerned our biggest expense is salary and benefits when it comes to instructional needs we do have some transfer tuition payments that we do pay out to other school corporations the other big source is our payment or share payment to heartland career center and that means that makes up again primarily salary and benefits for heartworm staff as well so you can see estimate expenses then are at sitting close to 15 million dollars so we do feel pretty confident that our education fund revenues will be able to support our education fund dollars again remembering that we are anticipating transferring about 2.2 million of that into operations fund that's just a breakdown then graph wise of where those expenses are so when we look at our education fund and determining revenue we have to look at our adm and so we have to kind of do a prediction of what we think that abm will come out to be so we look at it historically uh which we kind of already did in one of our board meetings here so nothing new here that just kind of shows you where we've been historically to where we're at kind of now you hate to look at students with dollar signs above them but the fact is you get certain dollar amounts for different types of students so i showed in full any of those amounts that have changed from previous years so for the basic grant we will receive about 240 increase per student that's all determined by state legislation in their biennial process of the state budget this coming spring they will get together and and do another two-year budget which would determine any potential changes in that basic grant or complexity grant or any of those categories of students you can see we've received complexity dollars for students that qualify for snap tana for foster care uh honors grant dollars for students that graduate with honors diploma cte dollars for students that take cte courses whether that's in our high schools or at heartland career center and then we also receive special education dollars based off of the students eligibility there are two counts for adm um that is our first count is actually coming up this friday september 16th and then our second count is february and then there is only one special education account so looking at our tax support locally tax support funds we look at our debt service and operations so you look at what your net assessed valuation is any any potential uh tax cap or circuit break losses that losses that may occur uh when you're looking at your operation fund budget you go ahead and switch it so when we look at net assessed value you can see that it has gradually been increasing over the last year or two and we had policy analytics run kind of a future analysis of what our assessed valuation may look like in the future and if you go to the next slide you can kind of see the blue is where we're at and the red is kind of estimated going out into the future and so it does look to appear that our assessed valuation is going to continue to grow over that time which is a good thing because it has an impact then obviously a tax impact on tax rates that you can that just shows historically that's nothing we have to look at right now debt service this is just some of the bonds that we have borrowed over the last past years we've done those on short term leases so that we can finish those off fairly quickly we finish all payments of all of our bonds at the end of this year except for one and that's the 2021 bond geo bond which will have about 2 million remaining of that to be paid off in 2023 as far as revenue is concerned for our operational fund we're looking at revenue about 7.5 million dollars [Music] most of that coming from our local property tax which is about estimated to be about 4.6 million dollars and then the other majority of that is coming from our transfers from our education fund operations that just breaks it down when we look at expenses i didn't really break it up by salarying benefits broke it up more by categories salary benefits are part of many of these categories and you can see our you know maintenance custodial student transportation and any type of capital projects repairs replacements make up a majority of our budget and our estimate budget is to be 8.99 and so when you look at our revenues we're only estimated to have about 7.8 million dollars but to really support our budget of 8.3 million dollars that's not necessarily going to fulfill that so what typically happens is then we have to look at reducing where we spend our money uh and a lot of those reductions end up occurring in things can you keep in mind [Laughter] you know we look at cutting costs in the building land area the equipment purchase area the facility areas some of those types of things which then put on put projects on hold unless we do some type of bond or some type of debt project to fund that now you may switch it please rainy day fund an estimated budget of a million dollars really we don't even come close to spending that uh but we need to have appropriations there in case we ever need it a lot of times what we spend out of that are more related to stipends uh any transfers that we may need to make but we haven't had to do those things as much as what we did in the past when we had the issues with the self-insurance fund additional considerations we're in a good position right now but in the past some things that we have done if we run into cash flow issues is taking out uh tax anticipation warrants which are just uh small borrowings of monies just to help us get through cash flow issues don't really see that to be an issue and then going back we can always go back and ask for additional appropriations as long as we can show the dollars to support any extra costs that we may want to encounter or need to encounter throughout that budget so that really concludes the budget hearing our next board meeting then i will come to you and ask for some approvals of some resolutions and then obviously approval of the budget adoption which would then allow me to submit all of that information to the lgf chris just trying to learn some stuff back on their tuition's four dollars from the state and then you have the additional dollars that you can get just like for the cte title does the internship programs fall into extra funding do they they classify what type of internship then or is it just across the board there's all kinds of different rates as far as the funding is concerned depending on like if it's a high wage high domain job you might get more ctp dollars versus a low wage loan demand classification um so there's it's kind of all over the place yeah there's multiple groupings of that different yeah but if you're in an internship program then that's similar family some of our business classes uh those types of things we can all we also receive dollars for can you have it if you get computer science classes from that the last thing i asked during this time in our budget hearing is just a resolution for appropriation modification so when we do the budget adoption and i submit that the deadline for the dlgf to get us a budget back is december 31st and so you know depending on when they get that budget back it may we have 10 days to respond to that that may not always fall within a time that we have a board meeting and so what this resolution does is allows me to work with the dlgf representative to make adjustments to not only the 2023 budget but even the 2022 budget if we have to to help support that 2023 budget and so that's all this resolution does it just allows us to make those necessary modifications in appropriations it's never additional appropriations we've never asked for more appropriations but we can always reduce appropriations so todd that that's dated today do we need a motion resolution yes that's what i was asking for today so i'll make the motion to prove a resolution for appropriation modification okay we have a motion and a second to approve the resolution for appropriation modifications experimental and as far as the budget hearing is concerned i don't know i imagine we have opened it up for any comments about the budget hearing we would close it so it is if this time opens anybody has anything they want to say okay it is closed now so we'll move on under personnel we have under resignation stephanie fisher paraprofessional metro north elementary anti driscoll paraprofessional metro north elementary and amanda lyons library aid at northville high school under employment carla dietrich cook sharp creek elementary kim heiberger robotics coach at southwood elementary brittany hoy paraprofessional at metro north elementary and amanda evanston 5th grade volleyball coach at southwood elementary we have three leaves there you can see the beginning dates and the expected return dates for those employees and under transfer we have disabled shu we're transferring from paraprofessional to library aid effective september 19 2022 okay hi i wonder if that one person that's uh resigned it's going to be grain farming or livestock farming she's in charge of well she's she works over there yes she's going to go work with them um [Music] there you go there we go all right uh next up our reports hartley career center report matt do you have anything for us nothing tonight all right mr key favorite super attendance report yeah i just have a couple things first of all um you know we read a lot of different things and when we read those things sometimes it uh sparks an interest to look different things up and so uh for example it's interesting we talked about um walmart county and and different things with walrus county and niche is a company that actually looks at comparisons of a lot of different things whether it's schools whether it's counties whether it's governments and things like that but this is interesting i found this online and they they advertise a lot and they use a lot of different statistics from u.s census and expert insights about wall beach county rankings number one out of 92 best counties for retirees in indiana i thought that was interesting um they're actually nine out of 92 for the counties with the lowest cost of living in indiana 9 out of 92.

there we go okay i will make the motion to approve policy imb teaching about controversial and sensitive issues uh can you get a second okay discussion uh like i said monday this one is just so vaguely worded anything could be taken as a controversial topic they've left it wide open i think i know what they were aiming at with it but it's just a horribly worded put together legislation which is basically anybody can be offended about anything and you could get in trouble for it if somebody says what you just taught my kid was controversial i think i know it's been expressed that some of this was in relation to critical race theory and i think if you don't teach accurate history on race relations in america you're going to run the risk of defending somebody else and it becomes controversial the other way so i think this is one i know what they were trying to do just the way they worded it was horribly sloppy and way too gentle all right um i will vote i to approve i am b teaching about control sensitive subjects mr curtis versus i mr guthrie mrs duncan aye mr hopkins no miss robertson no a policy is approved three to two okay next item is the agenda item to add agenda items the next item is the uh agenda item to add agenda items i believe we have somebody who already had made mention of one uh yeah okay does anybody else on the board have a future agenda item they'd like to request okay may i have a motion to adjourn i'll make that motion to adjourn one second all right mr kurzwich is i'm mr hopkins uh mr robertson mr guthrie miss duncan we are adjourned five to zero at 7 52.

it's listed out I'm not going to read off all of them but you'll we'll note that for the district between those two donor choose campaigns we received 134 grants totaling 88 000 uh dollars and so I think that's uh what the superintendent was intending to do was get things out to teachers across the state and she was able to do that we were also highlighted recently in the transportation department back to the the shortages we have a driver shortage so Fox 10 News came out we did a barbecue uh event to highlight uh bus uh Transportation people that were interested in job were able to come out and in the back parking lot drive a bus to get a feel for what it was like but we had a reporter come out early in the morning and kind of go through the uh the routes and uh they uh there was a little uh it was live shots on Fox 10 News and I want to show it to you if you didn't get a chance to see it so we'll go ahead and show that first Dale comes Unified School District is looking for bus drivers and they're really looking they're doing a recruitment event oh and Anita is there live this morning with more in that event and how maybe you can take part if this is something you're interested in driving the bus if you showed up at the bus stop Anita it is the best day for those kids you ready it's been a few years it's been a few years since I've driven a bus Andy is here to help me number one we close the door we don't want any of the kids to find out that's right so what we're going to do is start start the vehicle yep we'll start it up right here you go yep put on the brake yep fire up remember the handle now they hit a button okay doors closing yep One's Gonna Get in the seat um I'm gonna hit Drive yep just like the car there you go okay here we go right well you do but today we won't do it um why won't it go oh yeah you gotta put your put your foot on the brake and then push that in see Andy I don't know me out okay I'm gonna go left right here and okay how long have you been riding a bus why'd you start uh just about six years now and I uh was looking for something in semi-retirement yeah let's do this and uh we'll just wait for him he's gonna zip out of here okay okay I'm nervous okay oh wait he's coming right at me I was on the road first okay so I was tired and you said I need a little something to do yeah and so I was gonna do it for a couple of years here I am going into my sixth year and you love it and I love it you get a pass to the kids yeah you know and and you're like the first person they see in the morning lots of times the last person at night and oh yeah big smile and a good morning you know and I've had great kids sure okay you guys here we go do it right through there um what does it means to be a bus driver can I can I handle it oh absolutely absolutely as long as you're 21 years old got a valid driver's license uh Dale Combs that takes care of all your training yeah and a fantastic training program it's fantastic the benefits you mentioned yes great benefits and it it's very hard to trying something different here and then we'll make a circle we'll come back around we'll cut through them cones again okay I love it for the hours and stuff I punch in there's variations in different routes and stuff that we have okay but uh I think it's in like a six o'clock okay you know and then I get done around nine and I usually leave the bus barn about 9 30 about 20 minutes from here so I drive home spend three hours I come back for the afternoon run it's done around five five fifteen I'm usually home by 5 30.

we hear a lot about different things in long beach county but they have compared that and then the healthiest counties in indiana ranking 24 1792. and i just thought that was interesting and i thought i would share that uh there are different uh data metrics that you can look at but that's just one and that's just an interesting one um another one i thought um i know that uh if i can get this to to show some different things so sometimes we look at um different things that are put out there in our community um this is an interesting statistic and data that is received and this is all data that you can get through the census and things like that so will one county school district increase population and so there's a lot of talk about that so there are 20 counties in indiana that have only one school district of course the one that's most closest to us is huntington um and of those 16 of those counties had a decrease in population over the past 10 years so that was a census from 2010 to 2020 and three of the counties though with increased population are next to large cities of course you can see those of employed next to louisville and vandenberg close to evansville and warwick next to evansville and the only one uh that may be encountered with a single school district that had an increase in population that does not necessarily have a large population base uh or next to large cities brown county but of course it is very close to bloomington so proximity to large cities is providing increased population not necessarily consolidated school districts and so this is just data that was run from 2010 to 2020.

pretty sure Friday September 23rd you're welcome thank you very much thank you for coming okay um for now how large would you speak promotion for action item a I make a motion that the Board of Education approved the safe return to in-person instruction and continuity of services plan in accordance with 22-9 -19 on the floor seconded by Ralph any discussion putting none all those in favor please signify everything aye aye any opposed any update saying non-motion very unanimously action items B great I'll make a motion at the Board of Education approve the 22 2022 2023 Head Start food service agreement in accordance with exhibit 22-95 bridges any discussion all those favor all right and your toes successions being done motion Theory genetically um I would like to ask for a motion to amend the agenda for a brief presentation uh on the Danbury Career Academy phase one motion tournament thank you there's a second bye now all those in favor opposed motion Gary so while we waiting for him um just to update the board Lisa and I this afternoon attended a city building committee at which we've received an update as to what this first phase involves um it's essentially uh demolition the interior demolition site prep work repurchase a long lead items and that's essentially it I will uh I mean we can make many approve the phase so now it comes to the Cold War and from in the cohorts approval is needed for the final stake review um created in plenty of time oh my God you could correct first of all I want to thank you thank you from this to your agenda um I realize you uh conversation right at the last minute I hope to spend some time uh taking any questions you may have had so you guys are comfortable uh is it four fairly large faces by the first faces to face an actress is in front of you tonight and it is strictly predominantly a demolition case it is uh what we're trying to do is get our get this building so we can do all the hard construction work uh which would be the next phase and there's no delay so our goal is to do all the interior demolition that's remove ceilings uh remove anything that needs to be removed flooring interior walls ceilings eliminate electrical HVAC systems so they're prepped for new installations and we're also looking to we locate some psychotologies that there is going to be a gymnasium that is going to be built on the back side of this building unfortunately there's a considerable amount of utilities where that building is going so in order to again try to get a jump on this project we're going to relocate them into space so as soon as we're ready to actually do the next phase there's nothing in our way to build a building gets constructed we do the excavation work we put the footings in the foundation so that's part of the space we are also going to be doing a roof replacement as part of this space the reason for the roof replacement at this stage is because there's some significant long long lead items for roofing material they're talking anywhere between four to five months some people are saying six to eight months so we want to procure that now put our order in with the factories and get those products so we can hit the road Ryan when they connect um and then the last item which follows along with cement thought processes we're going to pre-purchase a generator a lot of the electrical items that have tremendous uh lead item I mean we heard 50 weeks for some equipment that we need first building we want to pre-purchase it now go out to bed get it and have it ready for us so when we need to install and we can install it um the second phase of the project is really the harder to project that's the one where we're doing all of the Interior Renovations we're doing the building editions we're going to be doing the greenhouse uh very strong when I did my last presentation to you when that phase is ready to go would you be in a few months we're going to actually go to your um site facilities we'll do a big presentation with them we'll have the architect there uh and then after they're comfortable working more comfortable board and we'll do a secondary presentation uh the third phase is basically fixed furniture and Equipment um that's the third phase and the fourth month which would conclude the practice business technology we always buy the technology at the very end because technology gets integrated so quick that it's like the last thing we want to buy so those are the four phases again tonight part of you is the I would say non-glamorous phase it's a demolition phase and I respect that you have in front of you will cover such things as you got to shut the breaker off before you cut the wires it's that type of work that's that's actually scoped out in the document that we sent to you so I know that's a very quick uh review of the Danbury Career Academy phases and what you have in front of you tonight we had an opportunity to go to the state on the 27th and we said you know what another another municipality canceled we're going to take the appointment which drove us to kind of be a little more expeditiously that we probably would like to be able to give you guys some knowledge but if you do need to take some time as long as we can get back up to the state before the 27th that'll be great I do need your approval before I go to the state I do need your approval before I actually get my local officials to sign off on the project so I would like to say there is some urgency in us trying to get it again and like I said when I heard an opportunity to go to go to school earlier than I anticipated I just I just wrapped it so but I'll take any questions can you give us a cost breakdown this is your first game so the first phase we just got the estimates in uh last week it's somewhere around 14.6 million dollars that does cover all the different definition works since I purchased it we spoke about it's all inclusive it covers all the other additional fees but yeah we're right around 14.6 million and examples of long lead items you said Roofing switch here and uh generator generator is outrageously long so yeah we're trying to put those orders in with the fact so it kind of meets in with our final Construction and given the um the year the building was built it's not that old you anticipate any risk around hazardous materials or usts we really don't the building we can mid to late 70s obviously a specialist products or somewhere outlined it but what we did is we actually not only had a phase one done we brought our environmental consultants in this past week he went in and just did another hard look did some sampling here again my shortest there's probably nothing that's going to come about we really kind of paid a lot of close attention to that prices any questions from board members a ult no we're still negotiating in the final purchase of the building I looked at several reiterations of the actual uh purchase agreement but but we're right at the tail end of community um well um so we do a competitive bit obviously we use a local company and we like to see that he has product there ultimately he has to provide the cheapest price most responsible person we just the most responsible price and if he does yeah it'll be great I have a feeling that material is actually for another job that uh he's probably not over now yeah Antonio the 14.6 million does that include any unanticipated costs to renovation so there we always carry an owner's contingency it is a very small one because all we're doing is demolition here um so we're really not anticipating finding a lot of them I'm seeing issues but there is a small contingency in here dealing with or something that we may want to build an advance or phase to incorporated into this phase does it make sense you're relocating all the utilities on just a utility Center in the direct location any other questions Michelle uh timeline Milestone schedules the remaining budget allocated for phases two three three four things like that to exist in the HVAC system today you you grab my dog today Insurance 750 million basically a milestone schedule as to when the lead time you're talking about what is an example there were several pieces especially when you're dealing with um this size Transformers Furniture so that's an example of a long way um generators we're looking at one to one and a half Mega megawatt generator that's not something that anyways something that is custom built um switch gear items like that are all specialty items that should be able to get them all because the plants are up and running with the order would come in just execute the order now there seems to be a back so you have to get in line it's entitled I I will cover some of the other questions so um as phase two gets further developed as I mentioned to you in the next few months we will be finalizing uh that design piece of it we're actually working with the Board of Education staff our colleagues on your side of the table at driver's drawings got some great feedback at going redesign some items as soon as that face comes to an end will actually secure an estimate and we do our presentation to you they'll actually have that estimate with us and updating one so far the phase one phase is actually trending to be right we figured no I'm saying when is that expected to be completed So based on demolition is about a three to four month space obviously we're moving comes in we'll actually start to move things work so that will actually probably carry it a little farther than to you and then the long lead item is as they store them some were safe [Music] what was the original meaning for the state well we didn't we didn't have an original meeting Ashley when we could get up there and he said well interesting enough we've had a cancellation if you guys need to be ready come up so very very quick yeah I just acknowledge that you I also do monetize it is a demolition phase the next page uh you guys should take a lot of time we spent a lot of time with your staff coming up with a new layoffs officer building the ministry uh development in all of the site work that goes with it this space here is more of a utilitarian phase while doing Demolition and purchasing equipment okay uh Antonio thanks for coming down to talk with us this evening um I think everybody around the table here is really excited to see papers with the start of these plan so thank you guys for bring that to us and putting that together um I guess so there's two things um and with I didn't realize the roof had to be replaced have we done any kind of evaluation for the possibility of solar so um let me just say that that school that it's a lot of the requirements for the state we have to be able to show my screen uh the existing moves there's one move that's fairly new but their wealth within they're well into that your same thing with the HVAC equipment HVAC equipment doesn't meet the standards for high performance the equipment looks great it just doesn't really meet the requirement therefore it does have to generally move so um you know those are the drivers if you will or some of the replacement items that we're looking at but I guess I'm wondering you know given that the roof is being replaced anyways that would be an ideal time if we were going to consider something like solar and I just don't know if that's part of this equation no we we definitely did not introduce solar into this project we do have some examples of for engineering and for educational purposes where we have these very well developed solar installations yeah that can be used for educational purposes and you can actually see electricity being made where it's used how much is being used so we did it we did introduce that into the project s thanks um and then the other question I had um forgive me if I'm walking up in a direction that doesn't make sense here um but you're talking about um Telecom like location of like electrical outlets and that kind of thing at this stage um I'm wondering if there's going to be an opportunity you know if we could do like a special meeting to have a conversation about it because part of I understand we're just in the demo phase right now but if we're choosing where um you know electrical electrical connections are going to be uh where you know maybe um internet or Telephone Connections are going to be um it would help for me to be able to see like could get sort of a visual way of things and I can understand we're not in that field yet but to be able to see that and we just can be able to evaluate it and be very helpful we typically will rely and understand to kind of help us with uh with that as they understand pretty much how they're going to use a classroom we also rely on our architect to understand the academic programs to make sure that they can actually use a room and where the outlets are to facilitate the educational but we can get into that uh you know when we make it'll take us a long time to get through those uh so with that in mind I understand you know you're planning for the 27th and you have other protocols to go through the city level with officials there um if we if we were um is there any possibility that we can give you a vote that look if you guys need more time I'm glad we can spot it's not a problem honestly maybe this is my uh my misjudgment in my in my assumption here but uh because this was such a utilitarian phase of the project the system of dental I thought it was a good opportunity I know the timelines were tight that's a good opportunity for us to Grant this meeting yeah I don't think anybody wants to cancel the meeting but we're at the 14th today so you know there's 13 in between trying to get a sense from you if like you need that full 13 I used to go through whatever you have to go through to City officials so one week prior to the meeting I would have to have my local fish officials review the plan the place I am lost they typically like to know that as you have endorsed the project because if they start reviewing them and then you guys don't like the project or you decide you want to go in a different direction and then they just spent all that staff time doing that I could beg them to start the review process just to make sure that it's done so we can submit their approval or whatever review comments that they may have to the state on the 27th so um so if you work backwards uh that would probably be the limit of uh pushing everybody to accommodate us being up at the state on the point okay thank you well thank you Antonio or bringing the information to us and if we would and you might understand it tonight that we are to Excel actually which includes phase one to get them started so we won't be one and we don't know what could come up that he might need extra time to do what you need and to add another meeting on the deck I'm comfortable with voting for this let him get started to get started to get this moving and dance maybe the end of phase one that you'll come back if there was some more additional information because as I try to get a hold on foreign everything so you know I take your word and I feel comfortable if there's anything that comes up you need extra time I agree and I'm going to ask the question that which Delbert asked uh meeting so how are we time-wise we're opening in the fall of 2024.

similar to a law from a year ago for sandra day o'connor citizenship or civic stay civics i think it's civic stakes jlda simply has to do with a change in the requirements for school psychologists their licensure or certification and that doesn't particularly pertain to us we've not had those issues j i c f a hazing and this is now a class 1 misdemeanor unless the victim dies and then it is a class 4 felony and then there's a change in the definition now links directly to the statute okay ikf is graduation requirements i don't think we even included it because it doesn't apply j j i a intra mural sports and then there's j j i b and j g a i b r which you don't need to go to which are interscholastic so those latter two really don't apply to us the intramural one does and it just simply says that when we announce to students and families that we have intramural sports we must designate that they are uh girl sports boy sports or mixed um and then but then it's kind of confusing because it's kind of um it it states that it's an optional policy for those districts that have intramural sports which this law applies so that's a little ambiguous to me and we'll want some um better legal advice on that excuse me policy ee transportation services and this enables school districts to contract for vehicles and other transportation services including electric vehicles i'm not quite sure how the first part is different because there are plenty of school districts and in fact we have neighboring school districts that contract for transportation services but i think it's it's aimed at the urban areas where they can contract say with city transit as for transportation as well doesn't affect us it also expands the type of vehicle permissible to transport school children and and in this case to vans use of vans to transport students has not been legal in the past for for school day kinds of things we have one situation where we use one of our small vans we have some students who live up the mountain from catherine's landing and it's quite a ways up there it's four miles and uh so last year and this year we are using a small van because taking a bus extends that bus route not just the mileage but the time dramatically to go up there and come back so i think it's three students that we transport that way otherwise i certainly wouldn't recommend that we would be transporting students to and from school in vans because they they're not constructed the way they should be for you know transport of students so so we will avoid it as much as possible okay and then eea bus driver requirements training and responsibilities so for the the van for instance which is not a school bus a person with doesn't have to have a cdl to drive a van and um so that that allows us to have one of our transportation employees who doesn't have a cdl to drive that kind of thing and this just kind of formalizes that process jf student admissions there's an application process a certificate for educational convenience and this allows students to apply to attend a district outside their home district if they are precluded from attending the home district because of distance lack of adequate transportation facilities or a parent or guardian's employment so essentially this adds some other stipulations or allowable conditions for open enrollment requests even though it's not in the policy that has to do with open enrollment ijl library materials and selection and this makes much more specific how parents can request looking at library materials and and anything that we are looking at purchasing for our libraries must be on display very much like our curriculum materials must be on display in advance of purchase and that starts in january it does not apply to any books or materials in the library that we we are replacing due to damage or loss those kinds of things it only applies to new things new materials we would add to the libraries ijnc again resource centers media center school libraries and this this comes from the law that says that we need to adopt procedures that provide parents access to school library collections and a list of the books or materials their children may have checked out and it provides that parents seeking access to the school library collection or a list of their child's borrowed books or materials may utilize a request form and so essentially they're saying we need to develop a request form so that it's you know so that it's not just somebody coming in on monday morning and saying i want to see all of this right now because you and i know that that's not necessarily going to happen in the next 10 minutes you know to round all that stuff up imd school ceremonies and observances i personally found this one interesting because the current policy says that we set aside a time for for silence a moment of silence but this makes it a very specific amount of time and and then very very much specifies that teachers may not tell the children what to meditate on or think about and they must encourage parents to discuss with their children how to use the moment of silence but in the law itself it also uh indicates the kinds of things that can and cannot be done during that moment of silence and that was part of that training session that i that i attended before relative to the impact of these laws and so we shared that with our principals before school started and had them convey that to teachers what can and cannot be done but it must be at least one minute in the past it said you know a moment of silence so you know that could be 10 seconds it could be 30 seconds and you all probably know that one minute 60 seconds is a pretty long time for a five-year-old so but this does you know this says it must be so we we make sure that we're doing that uh imb teaching about controversial or sensitive issues and this was amended to reflect that teachers have a great responsibility to educate students that but that parents ultimately direct the upbringing education health care and mental health of their students and so it has you know some some change in the verbs and other descriptors and that is this list for this year shorter than some years all right any questions on those no okay okay with that uh we just need a motion to adjourn the workshop i'll move that we had during the workshop i'll second that motion and avoid all in favor aye corey burgess aye amanda ayman aye charlene diaz hi anna boyd we are adjourned [Music] so [Music] [Laughter] [Music] [Laughter] [Music] do [Music] so [Music] so [Music] [Laughter] [Music] [Laughter] thank you i call to order the regular meeting of bullhead city elementary school board on wednesday september 14th at 6 00 pm action on matters that have not been noticed in advance as part of the agenda do we have any calls the public today all right item 2.6 adoption agenda we get a motion to adopt the agenda as presented i'll make a motion to adopt the agenda as presented second that motion all in favor aye corey burgess aye amanda ayman aye charlene diaz hi anna boyd so moved out of 2.7 donations we received several donations from the community which are always greatly appreciated we had donors cho choose donated 16 classroom projects to sunrise elementary for nine thousand four hundred and eighty five dollars and fifty four cents uh incredible opportunity thank you very much for that item 2.8 superintendent reports dr stewart mr president and board members you have the written reports financial building discipline our student count our attendance enrollment which is staying pretty stable which is very nice because it's up from last year and for miscellaneous updates i have a couple first i'd like to introduce to you uh elena hildreth who is the new our new director for chartwells and a lot of times astella is the one who comes to our board meetings but i was i'm happy to see that she's here and you would know who she is secondly i had the first meeting of the year this week with the superintendent's employees advisory council and we talked about some background on insurance so we can get started on that process early this year and have time to really consider a lot of things we talked about [Music] the issue of the district paying for health health club membership we learned in the audit this year that that is a taxable benefit and so i wanted the employees to have to weigh in on whether we should continue that kind of thing or not and so they're going back to talk with their the people they represent about that and then we had an initial conversation about the calendar it's my understanding that the high school has high school district has adopted a calendar or has proposed one at least and so we don't want to be too far behind in that discussion so they're going to be discussing with the people they represent calendar options and those things and then finally this letter came today that i'd like to share with you dear dr stewart i want to express my deepest gratitude to the bullhead city school district especially sunrise elementary principal chris roy after one of the worst wind storms to ever hit bullhead city which took out power to all residents the city knew that an emergency cooling center would be needed for hours and possibly days days ahead the plan for more than a decade has always been to use sunrise elementary school as a potential emergency shelter in the worst case scenario this was the first time the system was ever needed within moments city emergency crews sprang into action mr roy responded and gave full access to the school facility so we could get the generator started and welcome residents without power shortly thereafter a gentleman who needed his oxygen tank charged was the first to arrive at the shelter hundreds of people came to the sunrise shelter over the next 24 hours the city would like to commend principal roy and the entire bullhead city school district for its unwavering partnership for the betterment of the community we hope we don't have to use the generator again in the future but if we do we know we have the community partner putting others above themselves to help those in need signed by tom brady city mayor awesome thank you thank you yes yeah we can do that all right do we have any other questions for dr stewart no okay 2.9 board member updates uh did board members have any updates for us at this time sir okay item 3.1 right three the consent agenda we need a motion for the consent agenda we have a motion to adopt the consent agenda as submitted i'll make a motion that we adopt the consent agenda as presented i'll second that all in favor aye corey burgess aye amanda aymond aye charlene diaz aye anna boyd so moved item 4.1 service agreement with avm industry group llc dr stewart mr president and board members last meeting we discussed some issues that had to do with the service being provided by abm for maintenance landscaping and custodial services at your direction i sent a letter to abm indicating correction of deficiencies and failing that an intent to terminate the contract they have not substantially met the requirements set forth in the letter that i sent to them in the 30-day notice of deficiencies and therefore i'm recommending that we terminate their contract on 11 october do we have any questions for dr stewart we did our due diligence gave them their time frame yes okay all right then i would like to move that we terminate the service agreement with abm industries i'll second that all in favor aye corey burgess hi amanda amen i'm charlene diaz hi anna boyd so moved item 5.1 uh revised governing board policy ebaa and regulation ebaar first reading mr president and board members this was a policy and a regulation that we reviewed in the workshop last month where we did not have matching numbers for the number of hours for notification for um uh pest control or application of pest control so these now match uh to be 72 hours and uh so it's first reading of the policy it was the policy that did not match the regulation so to make that change you'll need to have this back on the agenda next month any questions it's just a first reading so no action needed item 5.2 regulation ebcr emergencies first aid in reference to policy ebv mr president and board members as we went through those policies last month there was for this particular one as i recall uh this is i think this is the one where we where it had a referral to another policy and there was nothing there and so we did not have a regulation um so this is uh the regulation that we gave to you last month as a sample from other districts and you all liked it so i'm submitting it to you this time for approval to add to our policy book any questions uh then i will make a motion that we approve regulation ebcr emergency first aid in reference to policy evb i'll second that motion all in favor aye corey burgess i'm amanda ayman aye charlene diaz hi anna boyd item 5.3 the 2022 aspa policy service advisory first meet first reading mr president and board members these are the policies that we just reviewed in uh in the workshop and so we put them on here as a first reading to give you an opportunity and the public an opportunity to review them prior to you considering adoption of them at the next meeting any questions no all right moving on to 5.4 new position maintenance custodial transportation dr stewart um mr president and board members having terminated the contract with abm then i'm recommending that we bring these services back in-house as district employees and so i'm recommending that we have these positions so a director of maintenance and operations and then at that person would be in charge of all the rest of these people directly an hvac technician a plumbing technician an electrical technician and a construction laborer and those four positions would be district level positions for maintenance of all of our facilities in the district that does not mean that they will necessarily be able to do all of the work because there will be some some tasks or some some situations where we'll still need to outsource those and that's been the case even with abm and then i'm recommending two landscapers for the district again those are that would be a district-wide positions and then for each site a lead custodian for the day and two custodians for the evening and that includes the lead custodian for coyote and then two night custodians that would do coyote this facility and transportation so so we're still getting the coverage that we need without having to have another lead custodian so i'm recommending that we create these positions questions my only concern by going in-house i just want to make sure that we get everything in a row um i don't want to see us get in a situation where we need certain parts and now we have to wait and get those bids in that we get all of that stuff ahead of time we will get it all lined up um there are some things absolutely there are some there are some issues there are some situations where we have to pay attention to procurement if we're over ten thousand 000 a year but for things like um i'm just going to say plumbing repair things for toilets for instance where we need the ball and the whatever those things are you know though we're not gonna we're not going to need ten thousand dollars worth of those things a year and so we can set up uh just like we do in transportation where we set up um an unopened po for uh parts for cars or buses up to some amount of money we can do that relative to this and so we would get those set up as quickly as we can and as we start to approach that we get ahead of that we'll get ahead of it the other thing the other thing we're learning this week because i've sent mark out to really really start looking at what we have in our custodial closets in the district and that kind of thing and we're finding an amazing number of parts that are just sitting on shelves in various custodial closets that we are then planning to relocate and set up our own shop if you will a warehouse a maintenance warehouse and we would do that at the facility at mountain view that's still our property and and we would do that with pieces of equipment that for instance a plumbing snake we might have two of those in the district well okay it's much better for our plumber to know it's always down there as opposed to oh which school has it today and that kind of thing so we've already got in in the works some things to streamline and make more efficient what it is we're doing with with this process carolyn how soon do you think you have all these people hired well with your approval we'll post positions tomorrow and they must be posted at least five days i suspect that some of the current abm employees may apply for some of them and of course we would give consideration to some of those folks if they've been doing a good job you know we would we would certainly like to keep them um and then it's just going to depend on what's out there on the in the information that i gave you about the costs um where because i wanted to be very transparent about this this move is not going to save the district money what it's going to do though will allow us to break even we should be able to do all the things we need to do and not spend more than we've been spending but if you notice and get our stuff taken care of and the advantage of that is if somebody's not doing their job we can terminate them and and we've not been in a position to do that you know if they're and obviously there are a lot of things that have not been done and we're going to be bringing to you a plan for how to start addressing those things because of course we can't do them all in the next month you know even if we had employees but we want to have a very definite plan on how we're going to address these many things that have not been addressed and still address any emergencies you know because things happen things happen um and and have that if you notice charlene in the uh the paperwork that i gave you for the first month um because we really want to take some time looking for a plumber a plumbing technician and an electrical technician the electrical technician particularly has some definite qualifications that have to do with safety for that person and for everybody around so at for at least a month we we can we can do with a director and an hvac we can't we've got to have an hvac person as soon as we can find that person because every single day we have an hvac breaking down literally every single day so um uh and then you know hire these other folks as quickly as we can and get them on board i like the statement that you made is this is not about saving money but we're not according to the our projected numbers we're not spending more so this isn't going to cost us more money um according to our projected numbers it is a savings but that's not we might need more people we might we might need more people and that we would be able to work that into this two landscapers was a concern four days a week i'm like we have more campuses than that so well but we have when when we get to the next item where you're looking at job job descriptions um had the lead custodian in the daytime can also help with that you know so and there's some cross cross duties going on and i and i did increase it i mean historically this district had one landscaper one well those of us who've worked here knew know that that wasn't adequate we might have to think about a third one we don't know we're making our best judgments here i do want to note to you that the expense of rolling over to this program is being helped immensely by the fact that mrs lot has has some funding in our grants in our esser grants to help us with with some supplies that we might you know we might find that there are not enough supplies in certain things not enough hand paper towels to get through the rest of the year but helping us with that but also with some of those expensive pieces of equipment if we need them one of the other things that marcus found walking around and taking photos of those custodial closets is that there is equipment sitting in those closets unused and so we may not even have to replace some things or purchase some things new now we'll make sure those things are working because if they're not they don't do us any good and then we really do need to look at vehicles we've got to have a way for these district level people to get around to do their jobs and and so each one of those needs a vehicle so we're looking at our current inventory of vehicles out in transportation to see if we have anything that's not being regularly used that we can either repair or put into service uh i did get some information back from dennis circu who's the director of the lead mechanic and those items are all in pretty bad shape uh and and maybe only one of them would be worth repairing to use but if that's the case i don't want to use car lot back here let's sell them and then that money can you know that money has to go back into that same account and that would help us purchase um some vehicles so um a lot of people a lot of moving parts to this whole this whole thing any other questions all right then we need a motion to approve item 5.4 i'll make a motion that we approve item 5.4 new positions for our maintenance custodial and transportation i'll second that motion all in favor aye corey burgess aye amanda ayman aye charlene diaz i anna boyd so moved out of 5.5 job descriptions dr stewart mr president and board members we went back to the historical record of job descriptions for some of these positions and started with those and then revised them to bring them up to what we think needs to happen so these are the job descriptions for the positions that you just approved any questions on the job descriptions then can we get a motion to approve the job descriptions am i missing what vehicle attendant is um we have a vehicle yeah and that's the one thing that is transportation and i'm sorry i had it on the other one the vehicle attendant is the one who is the person who keeps all of the particularly the white fleet functioning um you know when we check out cars and we've been checking them out a lot lately to go pick up our filipino teachers at the airport and take them down to social security and whatever so this person makes sure the car is clean fueled has few you know has fluids um uh and keeps the records for them being checked out and checked in uh so you know it's it's very much a part-time job that's what i had assumed it was it just wasn't on yeah so yeah and it's and it's uh and the hours are it was kind of hard to bury put that it's varied you know we may need the person on monday and not need them until thursday so you know it might be that instead of two actually two hours a day they might work four hours on monday and six hours on thursday and nothing in between so um it's a it's a floating kind of hourly thing any other questions all right we get a motion to approve the job descriptions i move to approve the job descriptions amanda ayman oh it's like for that motion charlene diaz all in favor aye corey burgess i'm amanda ehman aye charlene diaz hi anna boyd and mr president sorry to back up on this but this is not a new position this is a position we've had it's just that we never had a job description and so to post this for uh for the public you know for people to see if they want to apply we better be telling them what the job is so it's not a new position item 5.6 bid for new fire panel at bullhead city middle school fox creek and diamondback mr president and board members if you recall and you may not but uh we had originally built into sr3 replacement of fire panels at every site that needed them we woefully underestimated because all of the fire panels are obsolete so there's no way to replace just a fire panel it means replacing the entire system at the school so that means pulling wires putting in new pulse stations putting in new uh lighted horns and all of those kinds of things so much more expensive than we expected you may also recall that about six weeks ago the fire panel at coyote went off on a friday when i was not here and they couldn't shut it off and when and the only way to shut it off was to totally disconnect it so we filed with sfb and sfb is replacing is replacing the fire panel at coyote we put out bids for the three other sites that need immediate attention and and you can see the prices that they came in we managed to jen managed to rearrange funding in essers so that we could do two of the sites and then we have submitted the other one to sfb and it has been approved so we will be replacing these systems just as soon as they can get all of the parts and pieces if you approve these and we couldn't get the other two through sfb we could have but we well we might have been able to but we already had built it into esser and and felt like we really needed to follow through uh with you know with what we had originally started so i think it would just take a little bit longer if we were going through sfb and we have been hitting them hard for air conditioners yes we have been uh jenny beck has done a marvelous job of of applying and um i think we're already in this fiscal year i think we're already into sfb for over half a million dollars okay so any other questions and i move we approve the bid for the fire panels for bullhead middle school fox creek and diamondback i'll second that motion charlie diaz you all in favor aye corey burgess i'm amanda eamon aye charlene diaz hi anna boyd phil moved item 5.7 revised cobit 19 return to school plan and protocols mr president and board members we needed to do this anyway we're in a new school year and about a month ago cdc actually too late to get on last month's agenda cdc came out with some new recommendations relative to how we handle these so um i'm submitting to you the revised return to school plan and it we need to continue to call it that even though we've been in school all of this time because that that title is connected to the approval of some of the grants that we have we have to verify for esser grants that we have up-to-date return to school plans and and then we needed the protocols for students and for employees relative to covid19 and these do comply with the the policies that we reviewed during the workshop do we have any questions do we have a motion for item 5.7 i'll move to approve the return to school plan for 22 23.

you know so it makes for a great a great day you can kind of plan around your time off and have a little something to do you know to clean whether you're a hot job or something and yeah the district needs at least nine bus drivers that's the goal yeah right right okay yeah but we've had some retirements and stuff going on right now and so that has caused us to be short right now we've had some drivers over here for a long time okay just like I'm saying I'm I'm here six years and I'm one of the newer ones actually yet a lot of the guys in 7 10 12 15 years you know well you get you get State retirement okay because you're working with the state oh you can stay retirement okay and like I mentioned the benefits are fantastic and their training program is great oh I don't cover your home but don't tell anybody okay um and how people can come out what they need to bring yeah just have them come out you know just bring your driver's license be 21 years old and we're going to meet and greet you when you come in and then you're going to be able to sit down and sign up to drive the bus until they take you out you can put you in the bus drive the bus if you want to you don't have to oh yeah we're gonna have a barbecue this afternoon burgers and hot dogs and I would say come on out bring the family there'll be some bean bags going on and it's going to be a fun little afternoon it gives everybody an opportunity to see what it's like to get in the Big Bus like this my best advice first because it's very nerve-wracking you don't want to like lose any hot dogs or anything I'm stressed Anita get it sideways how fast does that thing go I lay some rubber yeah I would like yeah release you guys come on should I try parking this bad boy yeah try parking there's that you know a lot of people think they're intimidated but once you get in it's very it's very easy to drive you know if there's some blind spots here and there but you get like during your training you get to know where they are so I mean it just becomes yeah come on drive a bus today all right look at any great Ambassador I'll say he's like excited about it and you know you remember the bus drivers when you hopped on at the bus stop sure good job for our kids we'll be right back and that was uh that was a little piece but it is interesting we ended up having we ended up having 10 people come in in the afternoon uh to apply and uh we're working on I think it's six or seven new drivers uh there's some steps that they have to go through but so it was a good way to get some publicity but it also helped out because we had several people even a couple that are getting ready to move into the area that are looking at a job so again trying to be as creative as possible to get uh people in to apply for for positions uh upcoming events here in a couple weeks I know some of the students in the audience will be disappointed and the teachers will be disappointed on that but we're going to give you a full week off with no school you know so the set the third through the seventh will have fall break uh and then our next board meeting again will be on the 12th yes there was a tent that goes to the 12th oh because I just typed it I I didn't the 12th is right but the Monday's wrong um employee what we like to do for employee recognition is uh legendary teacher day and so we've done this the last couple years so I'll read a little something and explain uh what we're looking to do uh Educators do not always know about the positive impact they they have on the students they teach at the same time there isn't anybody in this room or anywhere that cannot remember the special teacher in your own life and the positive impact that that teacher made on their life this is the idea that's led to the last Thursday in September being selected as National legendary teacher day in the state of Arizona NAU has created a program to recognize legendary teachers it's actually uh part of the job of Nick Clement who's a former uh superintendent down in the Tucson area and what what Nick has asked in any use asked that is that governing boards uh pass a resolution recognizing the positive impact of teachers uh the board resolution uh establishes uh the Dayton in September as the legendary teacher day and the jail Combs Unified School District and it's a day that we would hope everybody would be uh able to take some time and remember the legendary teacher in your life and if possible contact and thank that teacher for the impact they they had on uh in in your life uh that resolution will go tonight but in addition to that we'd like to take about 20 teachers give or take from all over uh the district they represent the various grade levels and disciplines uh they could be new to the profession veterans what we try to do is say all of these teachers will have an impact on the life of a child and we just want them to be representatives of all of our teachers in this district and we just want to take a moment to call them up and and thank them for the job that they do but when they come up there's a little book that Nick actually wrote which is how to catch a swamp frog and what it really is is just a short little book about those legendary teachers in his life and the impact they had on him when he was growing up in in the community that that he lived in uh I think was back in the midwest there will also be a campaign that's run during September that allows students staff in the community an opportunity to recognize the legendary teacher in their life there's a short form that they can fill out and again it's just a it's just a way for uh someone to say thank you to that that special person that was in in their life uh it's just a small way to recognize uh if if you do fill out the form uh it's always nice if the person's still around to to go ahead and share that little uh that little thank you with them so what we'd like to do is I will call up the teacher we will hand them a book Mr Ray will hand them a book and we'll have them wait up here because then we'll take a group picture and those you at the beginning will have to stand for a while but that's okay that's right so representing kindergarten teachers in the district Rebecca Hardy from Simington her legendary teacher is Mrs shipiti a fifth grade teacher from Fremont Older Elementary School in Cupertino California for the first grade area from CTA Shaylin Rosenbaum her legendary teachers Linda copitz High School anatomy and physiology teacher and tennis coach at Terry High School in legendary teacher for this little guy [Laughter] for Fine Arts uh at the high school Matthew Berry his legendary teachers Mr Dave Coons who taught band in Deer Valley over in the Glendale area for PE Mr Steve Larsen from the high school and I'm not sure if he could be here today um his was uh Ron schoenwetter a junior high physical education his mentor teacher at Greenfield Junior High in World Language from the high school Jenna trank her legendary teachers Mrs wallati geometry and calculus at Dakota High School in Dakota Illinois or CT from the Middle School Craig Palm his legendary Stacy Sheriff her legendary teacher was Mrs Thomas of fifth grade at shimway Elementary in Chandler counselor at the high school Jolene Peterson legendary teacher was choir teacher Mr Scott Gentry up at Show Low high school and our social worker Angela Albers from Simington and her legendary teacher was Kelly Gundrum from Cincinnati Ohio again the whole idea of this is is just a way to recognize all of our teachers through these representatives of our teachers they do an unbelievable job every single day as do all of our teachers it is a calling it is a special profession I know at times people hear things about education but for most of you you don't realize what we get to do which every single day we get to work with your kids we get that chance to make a difference in their lives and it truly is uh a job that is of love and does create a difference in the lives of our students so to these teachers who represent all of our teachers from the bottom of our hearts thank you for the job you do you are an amazing group of people so thank you very much [Applause] thank you foreign oh staff recognition for CTA oh he did look at Craig good evening Madam president members of the board Dr Wyman and this amazing audience my name is Shanna schoffner and I'm the principal at the Combs Traditional Academy and tonight we are going to be discussing um a program that Mrs Battaglia our technology teacher partnered with one of our parents Mr Friday to you can call it a club but I call it more of an enrichment program that kids get an opportunity to come in and really look at the things they like dig into things that are interesting to them versus things that we present and say are interesting so I'm going to ask Mrs Battaglia to come on up and then she will bring Mr Friday with her and they will talk a little bit about the program that they're going to be offering our kids this year foreign I currently teach technology specials at Ellsworth and at CTA and in my classroom we cover keyboarding Internet safety the Google suite and a lot of different apps and things we do some coding and this year I have purchased some robots that will um hopefully the kids will teach me how to use and that's the way I learn a lot is through them which brings me to Dan Friday he came to me a couple years ago and he said he wanted to create a club and I said well what would this club look like and he told me whatever the kids were curious about learning and so he wanted to call it the Curiosity club and so I'm going to go ahead and turn this time over to Dan and he'll tell you about our club uh well thank you um Michelle Hagley for asking me up here and um so yeah my name is Dan Friday I'm I have three kids that go to jail Combs I have two in CTA third and sixth grade and I have one at uh Coleman's middle who's in eighth grade so 2019 um my two boys were uh well all three of my kids actually were in CTA but I had a um two of them a sixth grader and a and a fourth grader so we just we wanted to put a club together and really I asked them and some of the other kids what'd you guys want to do so we started the club really just starting with Rubik's Cubes learning how to do speed cubing we did chess we did the kids wanted to do origami so we did origami we did balloon sculptures which was really loud but also exciting um so yeah this year um well we did it in 2019 and then of course it's kind of been on Hiatus for the last couple years so we're excited to bring it back and we're looking forward to seeing what the kids want to do um they're whatever they're interested in that we can feasibly do in the classroom and Technology I'm happy to do it I also now that I have an eighth grader in in Combs middle started a chess club with him and in that chess club I have three kids that were also in my curiosity Club so um you know Dr Wyman when you're talking about how you get to interact with kids I don't I don't get that in my profession I'm a healthcare administrator I work for my brother who's a psychiatrist and we run for outpatient psychiatric clinics um so I take one day a week on Thursday I work from home and then after that I go and do clubs and that to me it's it's enriching and I I agree it is an enriching program not just for the kids but also for me so I'm happy to do it um and hopefully we'll be able to keep doing it so thank you for letting us do it at uh do the club I appreciate it Oh Come Back Susanna yeah I am so it's also my privilege um as the proud principal of CTA um to honor individuals at our campus that are doing amazing things so um forgive me tomorrow um Susanna works at two campuses um at Ellsworth with Santa and at our campus at CTA so when I started thinking about some of the things about her besides the two campuses you always come in you're always excited she's always happy um even when we're stressed out about things um you wouldn't see it on Susanna's face she tries to find the positive in things and make sure that she can affect the kids positively and not let the stress kind of get to them she's organized she thinks about creative ways outside of what we can do and try to figure out ways that we can help the kids and do additional things in the classroom and Technology that's both with Gen ed kids and even kids that we have that have disabilities and how can we incorporate them into the classroom and give them the opportunity to be able to do some technology things so for me you were chosen to get a blue Apple award tonight [Applause] very delicate she said they did this to her once before where she was trying to take off and they go no come back come back and I was like um content I got you a little something as well so that you continue to grow and catch a little something inside the cards thank you so much they do we appreciate it thank you you're welcome look we even got bill here we even brought bill so he could join you today I might have snuck some husbands in um at this time I'd like to ask Sherry Wells to come on up don't even just just come on up yes ma'am come on up that's a face I see every day I love her she's amazing Sherry is our nurse on our campus she does a CTA and she also oversees the students at CCS which is our Alternative Program next door to us we share a campus so I always say if you don't have the information or the shots or the stuff you need to be registered Sherry will help you get that she does not joke about getting us in compliance she's kind with the kids she makes sure that they feel comforted comforted when their parents aren't there because they're scared they're nervous they think they broke their foot and they're addicted to ice packs and you know sharing make sure to take care of that and give them the ice packs you could stop at any point um she's always thinking about the safety on our campus and different ways that we could do things um as a new principal to their campus she came to me to talk to me about this is some things we used to do before she was open to some change um when it comes to lunch she makes sure that if I say no she gets me lunch or she gets me a drink at Starbucks she just tries to do everything she can to keep the front office together and happy and make sure the teachers have everything they need and the students have everything they need so um vix here too in case you didn't notice your husband's here you don't see him you don't know who he is you don't know who he is plant people that can keep things alive that I never thought I could um so there's a little something for you um I'll let you know what I want for lunch tomorrow you're very welcome right Sherry who is she here to help and Michaela if you haven't figured it out could you come on up I don't know if I'm the only one but we try to do a lot of tricks and jokes and we need you to come here for this and we're talking about frogs so can you come uh Michaela here she works in our kitchen and our food service and she helps out our kitchen manager I have never met somebody that comes to work happy smiling every day loves to see the kids loves to say hello to him like there's just nothing about her that I can't think of that doesn't make her smile she does love gardening she's trying to go to school as well while she's working um she just has this positive attitude that just oozes out of her that like this like you I just I don't even know what else to say except for I appreciate she helps at CCS as well at our other campus when we help with some food service so that she can make sure that they're getting breakfast um in the morning and help facilitate putting together the lunches for them so it's just an honor to make sure that you get honored tonight and you can go home and do your homework [Applause] confident you have all the gardening stuff you need but you know thank you for everything you do thank you for letting us talk about our campus a little bit so just interesting uh information that that has been uh provided and by looking at all the data sources that we have so that's kind of interesting um looking looking at another i just want to share this also um we have put this out with the project proposal i'm not going to read through all this uh but with our project proposal the next thing i'll talk about is our informational needs that we started to have and will continue to have interesting note as far as the whole overview and i can read all this but it talks about in the quote there to bring up our buildings today's standards and district needs to cost as much as 70 million plus and that does not include over the several years it would take to do this one thing that you have to also remember here um is that we did not come up with that figure that's the architects that come up with the figure that actually had done the studies that go along with the estimate of the actual building of a new high school and also repurposing and renovating more from the south florida like i said i'm not going to read all this to you interesting to note though again you know this but maybe some of the people that are watching online don't know all this but they have we have a location there in the yellow and the top image some other pictures about the facilities and the learning commons the electives the classroom uh core classrooms and labs that are available or that would be available some other things about the estimated cost the 93 or the 73.92 acres of land also the repurposing of both norfolk and southwood and you can see those complete project costs and then uh what your vote means and that that's just a thing that we put out there and so the project timeline again we've talked about that referendum passes in november 8th then in march uh through that year there would be ground i'm sorry i'll start over from december through august it would be the architect designs the bidding and all that and then not groundbreaking until 2024 and then also going to 2027 2028 would be the opening so just uh just want to remind everybody that you can get on the msdwc.org website to be able to find all that information there's a lot of information on there and we just asked the people before they go to the polls to vote on november 8th that they actually go and be informed about what is actually going to take place and not just listen to all the other chatter that's out there but be informed by the information that is given so anyway i just want to share that and also just a reminder last night we did have our first meeting the informational meeting and that was at northfield a very good meeting about 30 about i mean i'm sorry about 60 minutes of presentations about 30 minutes of questions and answers and so it was a very good meeting of positive meeting uh a lot of good questions too and so coming up um the next two weeks before the next war meeting just a reminder that we are having the board of zoning appeals meeting on on the 15th that's this coming thursday our own school attorney will be presenting and helping with that along with other people that might be sharing information we're going to the norfolk football game on friday night on saturday uh we'll be in the parade uh they actually changed the name a little bit it's called wabash parts the founders festival um and we're considering using the booth too but we don't know if we're gonna do that and then for the following week um monday evening the 19th we will be at the la fountain learning community building to also have another meeting there for those people that want to come and that is at 6 30 p.m uh then we get to go to the uh on the 20th we will be at the northfield southwood volleyball game which will be held at south florida it'll be exciting to have both schools together and be able to have our display set up and people ask questions and then we'll also go on the 22nd to another volleyball game at northfield and then we'll have another new high school project informational meeting on the 24th at southwood at 9 00 a.m and then that same day that is a saturday so it's not a school day that same day then we'll be going to the little girl community building for anyone who wants to join us there so just want to keep everybody informed of that those things have been in the paper uh they're on our we've been on facebook um on our website so there are a lot of different places so we just encourage people to come uh listen to the presentations and ask questions after that so i believe mr daisy that's all of him all right thank you i see mr greg with us yeah i would just say that mr drake was here um he would mention that we have dr adam drummond here for our first ever full day professional development day that did not include e-learning we've never had that before and so uh dr drummond gave us a lot of uh information that we can actually take back even on monday to be able to do some different things one thing we've been focusing on is a book called focus and on that focus is getting back to some of the basics sometimes we like to look at all the new things and and just look at those and see how that can help but yet we know that there are a lot of things that some of us like even me that learn back in the dark ages that are really very applicable to what we should be doing as far as instructional practices and different things like that checks for understanding the relationship building just the the little things that you can do to help situations out and so i don't know if any of the principals want to share any of that or not but um that's just a short little snippet but they actually also had their own meetings with their teachers and different things that went on but uh there was a two-hour session for both elementary and then for uh junior senior high school because i'm sharing that or you'll have to all right we're going to move on to new business we have the presentations of the school improvement plans for southpaw elementary metro north and sharp creek and i think you guys do straws or something i think they separate these assertives so our plan year-to-year metroid doesn't change um that much the milton that symbol it's our veda updates we're going to continue focusing on building student achievement and reading writing math as well as our attendance and our last one is just continuous improvement that's okay through looking at our polar products and see how we are sharing that information with students mr billman you've been patiently awaiting i think looking at how um our little morsel you guys need us every year maybe not you every time but um looking at our little norse data so i have some information for that the other big thing i think that's new this year with our school improvement team is a joint professional development that our kindergarten and first grade teachers have voluntarily elected to participate in it's a very intensive professional development that um focuses on the science of reading it's not necessarily a program to go back and implement but it's to help us understand the reading brain and how we can better support our our students in those early learning years so um both kindergarten and first grade teachers at those schools participating in that and i elected to do that training with them as well and i would say it is more intensive than any college course i have ever been through just in the demands of our reading and our videos and our assignments so it's intensive that will also greatly impact student reading so a little bit of preschool data i will preface this with saying um it's looking at our kiddos that were in little norse from the very beginning and i just have their i read scores i also think we need to think about what happened during their elementary career and that was clothing so they lost nine months of instruction when they were in first grade at what i would say as a former first grade teacher their prime time and growth as a reader that the last nine weeks of school is just imperative um and then smatterings of what could have happened to them you know covered in school that they may have missed but in looking at their data like school-wide i read data for last year those third graders that are now fourth graders um we had a past percentage of 83 that includes our kiddos that took the summer recess so that is our freshest data um when we look at the 27 students that were in little norse that took ryrie with us of those 27 students passed i believe four of them did not and so that i passed for our littles was 85 um i don't want to dilute that data at all but i also think it's important to mention that four of those two students that didn't pass qualified for a good cause exemption which means that they had an iep and their case conference team determined that they either didn't need to take iv or that they were going to be promoted to fourth grade based on what we know about that student um so anywhere between however you want to look at that data 85 of our little marks or um for student achievement i don't have all of the data for months but i would assume well i know theirs will be higher because their overall id passwords were a little bit higher than each side so comparable but probably a little bit more this is the first time i've had to do one of these um pretty interesting to find out where our school's been and where we kind of want to go just throw out a couple numbers though our school tenants rate our goal is 97 we're 95 um three last last year so that's pretty close to our goal um our i read we were at 93 percent with the other seven percent being good cause exemptions so basically everybody that didn't have an iep pass that software elementary irony last year so that's pretty good um math numbers were as good as what we hoped uh but i think with this new um eureka square curriculum that we just implemented this that we're implementing this year we're hoping that will help i know the teachers um are still learning this new curriculum so um they're learning it with the students as well so it'll be interesting to see how that helps our scores moving on um one of the things that we looked at this fall that we noticed throughout the school as our benchmarking was kind of inconsistent throughout the grade levels and teachers so when we did our professional development day we actually did a uh in the afternoon at southern elementary we had our grades k through 12 or k-32 our k-3 i'm sorry to do some uh benchmark training uh to try to get a little more consistent so we can see where our students are and where our students actually need to be um because like i said one one grade level was here one teacher was here so we want to make sure everything's on the same page there um so i think we got that kind of fixed and we're hoping to see some more consistent basis there um here the winner um right now we're doing um k through second grade is uh finish up the pal screening which identifies uh reading difficulties um students might have uh so that will help us to figure out where our interventions need to be so that's what our tyler1 crew is working on right now is helping those students get lady at b and then um we got together a school improvement team they haven't really met in a couple years so we started implementing that again and we meet once a month and just to get figure out where we need to make some growth in our school one of those is community involvement we want to get the community a little more involved at southwood elementary so good than that uh i've tried to i've implemented a usual weekly newsletter that's one thing i'm trying to improve on just getting our community aware of what's going on in our school and recognizing those kids that was another thing that we want to do a little better job supplementaries is recognizing our kids um you guys saw the big screen in the lobby here we just put one of those up in southwest as well uh just because we want to get those kids up there and uh get them recognized for their accomplishments and a good job they're doing we have a pretty we have a really good staff we have awesome kids too just going to get get that recognition out there off to a good start so far um i've been really really impressed with the school with the staff and kids and the transition for me has been fairly easy uh elections are easy but it's been uh it's it's been a good transition so i couldn't ask for a better start for the year so i guess that leaves you mr martin yes thank you the school improvement plan as as jeanette already said you know it tends to not change a lot from year to year and that that makes sense if your staff's not changing a lot but we are trying to have sharp strength just clean up the actual document a little bit make sure everything's still accurate do away with some of the older um site citations of what we're doing or what we put into action and has been in action for years so looking at the document pretty closely and as casey said trying to make that a routine part of our school year um it meets requirements that's why it exists that school recruitment plan exists to meet requirements that are mandated but it does a good thing for us it helps us all in that building think together and have something to continue to look at think as far as our improvement goals mandated ilearn there's english language arts and math goals we also have an ire degree goal and then attendance is another mandate uh 97 is the the ongoing attendance and we were real darn close a little bit under that 96 something and then in the i learn realm we actually this year have established i don't know if you got a chance to look at it but we have incremental goals set up for the next three years uh just attempting to be very realistic with our goal for this year improving over last year and then the next year and we'll have the opportunity to tweak those and adjust those each year before the fall we have also one of our big pushes is for reading we're certainly not satisfied with 86 percent uh ivory 3 success and a lot of that coming through a very good summer school program and what was accomplished there kids are all different obviously some grade levels come through some dealt with covet and key parts of their education not all have but we feel like we've done some things this year with our paraprofessionals a little better training for them scheduling them a little better to actually spend time with kids in a reading situation where they they know a little more to be successful in the nuts and bolts of teaching kids to read and improving kids reading by progress monitoring them uh on a level that is uh is appropriate for a paraprofessional um and we will continue to look at the strategies and interventions which is a big part of the document here's what we're doing in the area of reading to help kids uh you know maybe that's we guarantee their master schedule will will have x number of minutes of reading time in it those kinds of things what we've got in place we keep looking at those and we keep seeing if there's something we can do better as mr key favor mentioned but we're always trying to focus too we're always trying to what really has the biggest impact what research says is really going to make the biggest difference and sometimes there's a lot out there to consider and so it is a continual process of trying to focus on what can actually be done with the time we're given every day to help kids to improve them and then we the document also includes then professional development that's happened uh recently and planned and we have a staff that's very willing to uh take a day away from the classroom which is not a vacation it's just more work to prepare for a sub and go take the day and professionally develop it we've got staff very willing to approve themselves so that's tracked in our document we track things that make us parent and and community family friendly what are we doing to communicate with people in the homes of our students that's all listed and tracked in there our pbis good citizen program this is more reference to theirs you know how are we rewarding students for good behavior and good choices and therefore is it impacting the poor choices that cause us to have to deal with consequences and things um so that's we got technology in there how we provide a safe and disciplined learning environment those are some of the big keys but if you just look at the table of contents you get a real good idea of what is expected and what's contained in that document really appreciate that that we have monica is our parent representative appreciate that we're going to hold 10 we're back next year so monica but we do we do appreciate that we have a parent who's willing we've got staff members who are identified as the school improvement plan committee but then all of our staff are really involved in all right thank you mrs moore mr stalker mr martin um for your work on that and as you can see um a lot of great things happening and they'll continue to look at ways to improve because it is called school improvement plans so uh i would ask that you would approve these because afterwards then they will get on a doe online and submit those to the department of education i'll make the motion to approve plans this evening okay so motion in a second to approve the to approve the school improvement plan all next we have a recommendation to improve the 2022-2023 school fundraisers so state board accounts requires school board to know and approve what fundraisers are happening in our buildings and so the principals gave me a list of what fundraisers they are planning on holding this coming school year so it just gives you an idea of what the fundraiser is and what it's for 23 school fundraisers second motion in a second to approve the school fundraisers for this year all the favor say hi next we have a recommendation to approve the extended field trip for norfolk ffa to attend the ffa national convention in indianapolis indiana on october 28th so the spirit motion and second to approve the extended field trip for norfolk ffa all over right next is a recommendation to approve the camping trip for southwood fourth grade to camp tecumseh and brookston indiana let's fourth graders in november all careful say hi and finally a recommendation to approve the camping trip for sharp creek fourth grade to camp to counts i should probably just mount those together i need a motion for that so much of the to approve the camping trip for sharp creek to go to camp to come so all if ever say hi okay all right we have no unfinished business or board policy open it back up for public comment on anything okay any items from board members it was 20 23 that's correct i'm just curious it's 20.22 22.

so we're still shooting for that date um every day we're kind of a job I think today you gave you a perfect example Electronics okay so uh three months ago uh four months ago it was impossible to buy wood well that's not much better so we have to consistently keep an eye on where the industry is going and actually foreign taking advantage we're not so uh yeah that that's where we are if for some reason doesn't look like we're going to be able to hit that date I'm going to update you when we come back in a few months for phase two anyway I'm like like you'll be the first uh my my personal feeling um scoopers um just would like to take an informal kind of goal to see where we are if we want to vote tonight or table is there anyone okay and um I know how Louisa is feeling about this she and I can go around the earlier today and we were both aligned as well I want to speak you're feeling very comfortable after that meeting we have Mr chair to really feel you need to use I want you to be comfortable um grabbing it and uh it also shows the state that we're wishing ourselves to meet deadlines so but if you need some extra time please I work with you guys since I started here you've always trusted me whenever we do not want this is a very utilitarian phase of the project I apologize for kind of spreading it on you at the last time man I'm sure just a comment find a job today Antonio or Mr Hughes and the whole staff did in school and excellent reputation so you have your work as City engineering a host of other things that you have so I am totally comfortable taking the boat tonight okay would you like to make a motion I'd like to make that motion for uh action item to sing Board of Education authorizes the chair chairman of the board of education the superintendent of schools to approve the final plan specifications cost us it's for phase one from the Danbury Career Academy project and signed the scg-042 forms for submission to the state of Connecticut office of school Construction Grants review for approval in accordance with exhibit 22-96 Teresa Rachel yes Michelle hey lettuce yes Lauren yes Bridget Julie upstairs Albert yes thank you so much we'll see you in a few months our security thank you thank you so I'd like to start off with this introducing new director of Academy partnership District we do happen here this evening start off with Jamberry with a background in Education and Leadership most recent Globe Services and Maplewood high school in Nashville Tennessee for five years in his role as Academy coaching work closely with the academies of national team about happening and develop local Partnerships that helps prepare and expose students to real-world opportunities and it's those real world opportunities that we are most excited about here in bandana in Canada to talk a little bit more about exciting opportunity to frankly a whole bunch of Staff members through the excited about second I just want to kind of talk to the unique nature of okay thank you so I'd like to talk a little bit about about um itself has been an idea Academy needed for several years so um it's going to help us realize the first Brett thought he was going to move up here from Tennessee to escape the heat a little bit and that if that is not the case um but early on in the development of this project as part of the five-year strategic plan on how to launch an academy and move to a transformation model the idea of having strategic Partners in the business Community was one of the most essential components aside from the educational piece is how do we build those relationships and how do we actually partner with industry uh industry experts to to build and to be responsive to the community needs but also to prepare students for college career Beyond and so when we went down to uh Nashville has been you know this is sort of the Genesis of the project was started with that visit um down there and some research work that we had done and uh we were obviously Blown Away we came back and got to work right away um but we were very impressed with the amazing Community uh development and Liaisons that they had developed over the course of several several years with an organization called pencil um and then how that lays with all of the high schools down there in terms of sponsorships internships externships um resources for the schools jobs summer work you name it um it was just it was just prevalent throughout and so we came back we knew that that hiring a director of Academy Partnerships is going to be a key part of the process and some folks said you know why somebody's now okay they're not open yet what's going on well you can't open an academy and have fully developed Partnerships and internships and things ready to go unless someone's actually working on them we were very fortunate when we posted that job that um someone from the academies of industrial applied for it uh we almost fell over so um within a very short period of time Brent has made a tremendous impact on everybody he meets he's an unbelief Builder it's one of my new favorite people ever uh in the in the last couple of months since we've gotten to know him and he's fired a lot of ground since he's been here so I'd like to introduce to you Christy hey everybody I'm really humbled by that thank you I appreciate it um I've been enjoying my time since I've been here uh in Danbury the energy has been great from the surrounding businesses and organizations um I will say that uh what I've been tasked to do is to secure uh maintain and nurture Partnerships and so that comes in the form of going out to different businesses you know I've chatted within about the academy model and the potential behind it even post-secondary institutions as well and so so far I've been getting really good feedback from them just to give you just a few highlights of the businesses that I've been able to attain it's been over 15.

reconvene to our regular session second amanda amen all in favor aye rory burgess hi amanda amen aye charlene diaz hi anna boyd um there's no need for a motion at this time so moving on to item 6.2 discussion and consideration for kindergarten request um actually mr president this would be 7.2 yeah and uh the family of the student has requested that this hearing be in public so you could offer them the opportunity to um share their appeal to you hi good evening everybody my name is latina white i am petitioning for my son to go to kindergarten he's three days off of the cut-off date i inquired about preschool and there's no spots available and i really feel that for his development his emotional and mental well-being that he would really thrive being in a structured school environment right now he's just going to day care which is not the same so i i really think that would be in his best interest also i'm a single mother so um so my ability to maintain my employment and stability and security is really important for the success of my family so i really hope that you guys can see that perspective of things and help me out did he attend preschool beforehand um he has in the past we came here from colorado and he was in preschool in a montessori school with kovid he was out of school for a while and then somehow he did get enrolled into kindergarten and phoenix when he was with with with others but i don't know how they allowed that because the cutoff is the same throughout the state but he did start in a kindergarten classroom for this school year and then he had to go back into daycare so just to so you understand where i'm at with situations like this oh sorry just so yeah they're under my mic wasn't on i apologize where i'm at with these situations um i'm a pretty firm believer that that's there for a reason um and kids need to be ready for for that early education because that sets the pace for their entire educational years is those first three years um we had your your son tested and he's not ready can i comment on that i just want to say that i think that the lag in education due to covid caused a lot of that i don't think it's an incapability um i think it's simply the fact that he's been out of school and i think had he been in school he would have showcased that he was knowledgeable in school-related information and and i understand what you're saying and and the problem being is that right now we put him in a kindergarten classroom he is going to be very frustrated because he he academically lacks those skills that he needs for kindergarten he really should be in a preschool right now um i worry about i i'm like mr bridges i am a firm believer in kind of sticking to those those time frames for a reason i worry about even if he was academically great right now five years down the road he's going to hit a wall and maturity wise he's going to hit a wall and so it's in my opinion just my opinion that it's very difficult and very not always wise to push a child into an a in a grade that he is not mature maturity wise ready for if that makes any sense but um yeah academically though you're right he's probably that may be part of it pandemic but he's not ready for kindergarten right now i think that's an opinion and i think i understand that you're looking at like five years from now but what we're talking about is right now and i think he just needs the opportunity to catch back up and i think that he if placed in a kindergarten classroom he would do well he has a first grade sister i mean he has a sister who's in first grade so he's not [Music] it's not like he's not used to being you know around school-aged children or in that environment he he does well with other kids he does well in a structured environment but with him not having that not only is he combating the loss of school from from covid and other things and a lot of trauma that we've had in the last year but then he's going to go a whole nother year without getting that introduction and exposure to not just the academic side of things but being around other kids his age i mean there's like a baby right now in his daycare because every it's a small town there's minimum options and um i would like to point out that i did apply for a preschool position i mean a preschool uh slot um when i signed my daughter up for preschool and i was told that there weren't any and then i got a letter saying that there was one and of course when i went in there it's gone so i feel like i did my due diligence to get him into kindergarten and i was not given that same information because i was flat out told we don't have any spots that was going to be my question because and i filed a complaint regarding that so now that's why i'm in this position so i was i was going to be my next follow-up was did we try to do a pre-k route because yep we've got some awesome preschool programs that i yeah benefit him because it you're right it's his age group it would be within his his age yeah i agree so i did and i was not given that information um i don't know why i i came came in i i think multiple people can attest to that and i filed a complaint about that because i there was a spot at diamondback that nobody told me about and when i went to come in the monday after i received the letter friday it was taken already and he probably could have got that spot so because nobody gave me that information when i came into coyote canyon for it then that put me in this position yeah those spots fill up fast right but i asked while the spot was not taken i asked when it was august 17th i got a letter that friday and then i went in monday because nobody told me they told when i went in on the 17th i was told there was no spots but there was one at diamondback so i filed a complaint regarding that so i feel like i've done everything that i could do and now this is my option otherwise i'm going to be faced with a financial hardship among other things i do did anybody else have no i do understand your situation we do have a waiting list for the preschool and i'm not saying that's the decisions being made i'm just giving information that i know of um and i do sympathize with your situation but my where i'm at with this situation personally is he's not ready and we're asking to move him into a class that he by age group shouldn't be in any ways if he was there and and honestly i i think in all my years i've done it once or twice once i've ever moved a child into in up a grade because i that's my feeling now the other board might be another way but that child was ready and i personally really have a hard time with that because those first years are so important educationally and to me that that that's kind of where i'm at they have to be ready to be there and by that deadline age-wise he's not supposed to be in kindergarten so we're we're asking for an exemption to a rule so if that exemption there has to be extraordinary circumstances to do that in my opinion thank you for your opinion i would just like to say i think it is extraordinary circumstances um i'm a single mom i have no support i am paying 600 a month for him to go to daycare which i really cannot afford to do um also i would like to say that in my opinion was an error on your guys's part i know you said something about a wait list but um the person who filled the spot probably wasn't on the wait list they were coming in off the street just just like i was and had i been informed about that one spot being available my son would most likely be in that spot i mean in your letter to me caroline you said he would likely qualify for the title one or whatever spot but i wasn't afforded that opportunity unfortunately um okay so i can 100 sympathize with what you're going through um my husband is disabled he was bedridden for two years and during that time i was going to college nonstop i could not afford daycare and i had a baby like he became bedridden two days after our third child was born and he was bedridden for two years so i can completely sympathize because not only did i not have a job i was doing full-time college but now my husband i had to take care of him and he couldn't get out of bed i discovered that there were grants that most a lot of preschools and daycares actually have you can ask them about them that will pay for a year of them to go to preschool um the one that we went to i think was it was the one that's no longer there like a stepping stones or something i don't know what it was but near walmart area it's not there anymore but i've heard of other people who've gotten this grant even tiny t-birds has this grant available so i'm just going to let you know that i'm 100 sympathetic to what you're going through but at the same time we have to keep in mind the child and i do believe that those cut off days are there for a reason but there is help there out there if you can't get into this preschool if you or and you need to get him into a daycare and you cannot afford it i do know that there are grants out there you can ask about those um you know if that if you if you know he can't get into the preschool right away or something like that but the thing is is is there's a lot of people in this community that are there's a reason we're title one schools and there's a lot of people who have children who can't afford to put their kids in daycare and who are going through situations like yours i've been through that situation and i would not have been able to survive and finish college if it wasn't for the grants that are out there and the help that i was able to get um but as an educator i look at these things and and i go you know there's there is a reason that cutoff is there and i know that sometimes it's desperate you get desperate and i understand that i very much do thank you for your opinion um i would just like to add that um he's three days shy of the cutoff um i just want to point that out is he's not like super far off he's three days from the cutoff secondly i would like to point out that while there are a lot of people dealing with the same rough circumstances single parenting whatever it may be this is i'm here right now trying to come to you guys and appeal you guys with my case just like anybody else has the ability to do um the biggest thing that is upsetting to me is i love that you guys have those grants like title one title one um what's upsetting to me is i could have had a spot for my son but i was withheld information about an available spot so i'm just curious how my community is going to support me now that they made an error where i lost out on a spot that i needed for my son so you're okay with him being in a pre-k classroom at this point it's it's not necessarily the fight for kindergarten but it's it's a fight for the education so when i first signed my daughter up at sunrise i asked them first do you have any pre-k spots they said you'll have to go to coyote canyon like immediately after doing being at sunrise i went to coyote canyon i talked to tammy alvarez and i talked to jamie cottrell i said are there any pre-k spots anywhere available they told me no meanwhile there's one at diamondback which i found out when i got my letter on friday this was wednesday that i went into coyote canyon so when i went in i'm not even kidding when i went in monday to go apply for the spot that that was literally i walk in and somebody else is taking the spot so had i known about it wednesday my son probably would be in that spot so now i'm having to petition for him to go to kindergarten because i feel like i was jaded out of that spot do you feel that he's ready for kindergarten i feel like absolutely absolutely absolutely i understand that you guys did a little test but i just feel like it's not accurate because he's been out of school give him some like me maybe even a month with me working at home on on school work which i've already been doing or with some extra supports in the community or you know whatever that looks like he'll be he'll be at the level he needs to be he's a smart boy he's a smart boy so i'm not i'm not worried about the academic side of things i i think that he's more than ready honestly and once he gets into school then he'll be trying to slow him down um but i think that he's ready to be in school whether that's a preschool setting or kindergarten i think he can handle either one any other questions and just to confirm we are full in all pre-k uh and the last time i checked um kate we are full yeah yeah so kate works very closely with uh with mrs alvarez and uh on this program partly because she's our sped director so a lot of the kids you know that we that we have to place are special needs kids and that's that's not your child so um uh you know so she they work very closely together and every spot is full and miss white so you know um the the day the day between when you were there and the day i sent you the notice somebody had withdrawn so that created that vacancy and then as you're and you're right then it immediately filled so um that that is a piece of knowledge well i i just wanted to point out i'm not offered a preschool slot that day i was not and i also want to point out that i asked jamie monday when i followed up about the spot i asked her how long that spot had been open at diamondback and she told me a while so i don't know if that's misinformation but that's what she told me so that's that's my perspective is according to my experience and what people said to me that spotted diamondback was open for a while do we normally have people drop like that for pre-k like is that a normal expectation that you know one here one there that no usually we have them lined up waiting i mean and and um yeah and one of the reasons one of the reasons we do that we are full right now is that one of our preschool classrooms that is funded with a grant excuse me we don't have a teacher so if we can find a teacher we have 15 new slots okay any additional questions do we have a motion to consider a kindergarten request i apologize but with no motion what is the process to appeal there is no appeal what do i do next because i don't feel like this is just i i apologize that you feel you were wronged but this is the final step the board we are elected by the community we make that final decision um at this point i would recommend that you see i didn't even know about the grants yeah but those are those are for daycares i want my son either in preschool or kindergarten she did mention tiny t-bird has one and tiny t-vert is a preschool it's a it's a it's an infant through preschool um it's located at mojave high school's campus um and it has infant one twos threes and preschools so you know how you said your son is in a classroom with an infant right now it wouldn't be the case there i know that one for sure um i can't speak to others i think new day also has a preschool don't they and just scooters and all of them do have grants that i am aware of because i know people scooters want to accept my son but i will look into the other ones i just want to clarify so if i am not happy with this decision or if i want to explore because there's i filed a complaint where do i where do i go with that okay the decision to enroll your child as a final decision is here i understand that but i want to make sure that my voice is heard on the injustice of not being offered a spot and i handled that already because i investigated and i was told by several of the people who work in the coyote office that the day that you brought him in for testing um you were told he did not do well on that and that he was into that preschool classroom and that you declined that at this point what i would suggest is that you get on the waiting list because we hope to find a teacher for that other classroom that's a lie you just said you just said they said i was offered a spot i was never offered a spot well and so what's the story and i'm listening to multiple employees at that campus who are telling me the other way so you know right listening to both sides and um and i go with you know i'm i i chose at the time to go with what they told me that you had been offered a preschool slot and that you said i want to appeal to the i want to appeal to somebody because at the time i'm sure you didn't know you needed to appeal to the board but no i didn't appeal to somebody i did kindergarten when i went to sunrise i knew that if if they didn't take him i would have to appeal and i was in and this makes me further upset because they're lying now i was never offered a spot which is why you gave me a letter when somebody withdrew apparently but i was never offered a spot so i'm just confused by now you're saying that they said i was offered a spot when they told me there was none available because that's what i learned when i followed up on your complaint and with that complaint if you filed that you did do the proper procedures okay i will i'll i'll i'll handle it on my own thank you thank you item 7.3 future topics do we have any future topics okay 7.4 upcoming board events uh september 14th is this well that's today we have to set a future meeting october 13th so far second uh all in favor hi hi motion carries four to zero so now we have some discussion information and discussion items 9.1 discussion information on student achievement Benchmark testing footsteps to Brilliance and paper [Music] right now I don't have to say it because you just did that's perfect uh so those are our updates tonight we have a few items to share with you some updates on uh we're going to start with the footsteps to Brilliance um Miss El fetus is going to come up and share with you a little bit of updates with that and then we'll move on to our other items good evening I I'm presenting on footsteps of Brilliance um in case you haven't seen the information that has been presented online for parents it's a It's a Wonderful application for early literacy it um there's three apps that that the um that it it that entails uh the first part is a it's called clever kids it's for your early readers from ages three to five or the pre-readers the second app is um I can read up and it's an application where families can or children can log on and it's for your Advanced readers and then the final app is a footsteps to Brilliance app and that one is the engaging part of the the application it has a over a thousand a thousand books and songs and um games that the children can play um I feel like parents our children's first the teachers and this is an excellent app does it helps families that help the children reach their goals and um where where we're at right now is um what we're doing now is we have presented the application to Community Partners um first things first art we have given Flyers with them and I've made a connection with them sharing our program Chicanos for La causa is a presented at parent meetings there as well and um they're sharing their program and hopefully in the future we can get in and present the program so they could use in their Head Start program and then also um we are in our preschools of course we had over 200 children log on last school year and moving forward our children will be logged on for our preschool application and then also um we had over almost 300 students of register for the program and hopefully this year we'll move on with Kindergarten Roundup and enroll our our future kindergartners and also I want to make um last year it I don't like to use covet as an excuse but I feel like it hindered us a lot as far as I'm being able to share the share the application the way I wanted but this year we'll we're open to more clinics and and parent meetings we were able to share it with um our migrant students and our um our El students at parent meetings as well and just looking forward to getting it out there some more and then just sharing the information with people online and then also on teachers newsletters School newsletters any question um I do what kind of ongoing support is there for a parent who may be having a little trouble with the new program because the parent needs to learn it so they can help the kid with it so what kind of support do they get there's a couple of avenues that you can take I'm always available so you can reach out to me um and then also there's a technical support line with the program itself and so they're pretty helpful but I'd be more than willing to help out families or and in terms of our five elementary schools do we know how many students are currently using it in those five schools we had about 280 students register for for this year this summer for the summer yes we don't we don't quite know in terms of how many are continuing to use it during the school year I don't have that information okay right all right we can get you that updated usage report we'll make sure we include that on the next board meeting um also looking at doing a couple of things to push this in more as a supplemental resource in our K1 classroom so there's some things we're looking at there just to increase that usage what we found when we pushed it out into the community is that some of our our local preschools and daycare centers and whatnot um shall we say have proprietary programs that they prefer to use because it's more associated with them so looking at some other ways to use this program um in the future I'm gonna go a little bit out of order because we have assessment next but we invited some folks to join us tonight to talk a little bit about paper so if you'll forgive me I'm going to go out of order and we'll do the paper stuff so we can get our our guests Moving on but um if you're not familiar with paper you know we have a new board member tonight so if you're not familiar with paper it's an educational support system which provides students with 24 7 Live help essay reviews and teachers with real-time feedback the primary ways that we see it used in our classrooms are a lot of time with math support as well as with essay writing and some of those elements um so where we're at right now with with paper we've seen a significant increase from the initial launch so if you look back at when we launched paper mid-year last year our usage from that till today um about doubled as you would expect with any new initiative after paper launched middle of the year last year we saw a little bit of a of a Wane in that if you will and we're actually about triple the usage from where we were at the end of last year so it's getting utilized a lot more in the classroom um and helping to support that just in time peace some elements in terms of where we're headed with paper a couple of our schools have already taken on an opportunity to do what they call a paper pep rally so it's supported by the the program that's kind of a rah-rah if you will um and kind of supports that usage um principal Ridge can share with you some some stuff that they did at the middle school that's pretty fun um and then some targeted use for paper when a teacher is not available to ensure student comprehension and Mastery of Concepts so really trying to build in that opportunity to use it in the classroom setting uh when we know that we have that issue to address where we have one teacher and 25 30 students this gives them access right away not not having to wait for the teacher to support them in those moments a little bit of usage data you can see on this slide a couple of items that I think are interesting to note right now we're still still seeing primarily usage during the school day so you can see that the Monday through Friday usage Peaks kind of midweek and happens a lot during the school day heavy usage at our middle school and we're looking to increase that in some other areas but about 3217 tutoring sessions I was at the middle school the other day and it was kind of an interesting example of how it was used middle school math classroom teacher had the students working on their independent work time and Miss Ridge reminded the students because we were actually in the room together that hey we got this resource don't forget you can use paper so the kids are like oh I don't have to wait for my teacher and they hopped on and they were getting you know chatting back and forth with a tutor and I was fun because I got to observe over a shoulder as the tutor walked him through like well what are you going to do first and and why would you do that and what would that look like and so it's kind of cool to see them walk through that process so right now just a couple of statistical pieces our top user right now is Combs Middle School they've had about a little over 3 000 activities awesome tier two usage some other strong usage from Ranch Elementary Ellsworth and Combs High School and the main subjects that's being used in right now are basic arithmetic essay writing and basic geometry all those stats are fun but it's more fun I think to hear the voice of those who are using it so we have a couple of guests tonight to join us I'll start with Combs middle school and we have a teacher Jenna Brophy here tonight as well as one of our students uh Trayvon lip tip lip I knew I was going to mess that up trayvon's here as well I was working so hard to make sure I said Trayvon right that I'm going to mess up the last name so I'm gonna invite them up and just to share a little bit about what it looks like in the classroom setting and how they utilize it and then we have a couple teachers from the high school that we'll also share with you how they're using as well perfect Trayvon your wife fast forwarded ahead so we can get you up here and home absolutely laughs so did he get the Apple watch then because he closes nice all right but but miss Ridge just so you know that the CEO of paper contacted me he was one of the first uh to use it in the entire nation to complete it and so he sent me an email when it happened just to let him know well what are they sending him foreign I find paper as an effective and useful app I also enjoy the fact that it's convenient that I get to use it when I'm like like last minute studying like a test so I'm like asking them questions real fast and I mainly use it after school and some during school when I'm like afraid to ask a question so when I use paper I feel like I feel like I'm not judged when I use that and like I'm not scared to ask any questions and yeah that yeah I have no cons for it because I enjoy cons all Pros yeah that's what we like to hear yeah questions no but I think we need to follow up on this paper thing that he's the first one in the nation like I'm thinking he needs like you need to be the spokesperson or something yeah right yeah I think so the face of paper you want to sign a six-figure contract heck yeah endorsement deals he's working on an endorsement right do you need help we'll help you like we're all over we get the marketing right thank you thank you so much Trayvon [Applause] to turn off the microphone when I move it this time and invite Miss Brophy up to share with the classroom A Little Too Short middle schooler size um okay so so far this year um paper has been a really valuable resource in our math classroom specifically um and campus-wide I teach 7th and 8th grade math so I have the opportunity to see students of both grade levels using it um at the beginning of the year we were more using it um we would have it as like a bellwork question so give the students a couple choices and say you know hop onto paper ask them this question just to get them used to um the process of how it works how they're actually interacting with the human and they have to be polite it can't be like they're texting their friends um and just to have them used to paper doesn't just give them the answer so the students can't type in what's two plus two and the tutor's gonna say four have a nice day yeah um what we really like about it at the middle school is that it guides them through it and like makes them use their critical thinking skills um instead of just giving them the answer and moving them along um as the year goes on we've been using it more in our small groups so when we're the teachers working in small groups with students that's a way for students on their own to if they're not able to access this right away to answer a question or maybe if they're you know nervous don't want to get up in front of the class they can just hop onto paper it's automatically right on their screen in Google Classroom so it serves as like a reminder for them that they're able to just pop on you'll see a lot of them we'll have half their screens as the paper tutor and half the screen as their assignment um so they are using it um to be more independent and find clarification on their own um I really like it because it kind of helps them feel more confident and like they're doing it on their own without having to rely on a teacher for help all the time um I've even actually had a couple of parents reach out to me and saying you know I know there's that online tutoring program how can they use it for their homework um so it's definitely making its way around and I think our favorite part like I said is that it encourages them to Think Through the problems it'll tell them you know do you have any notes on this what do you remember about that vocab word that you just brought up um instead of just spitting out the answer um just like how we would and it has a bunch of cool features so that you know one of my concerns was well we have all these like crazy math problems how are they how are the tutors gonna know what they're talking about I mean they can draw on it they can sort of draw anything they need the tutor can send them a little picture back um so it's very interactive and the tutors are really good about explaining things without giving kids the answer straight off the bat um so it just helps them to use more of their critical thinking skills and it helps us as the teachers in our larger class sizes to reach every kid thank you so much [Applause] all right we're also fortunate to have a couple of our high school teachers um solet and this pile here tonight and they'll share with you how they use it in their classroom as well good evening um I think it's pretty um easy to assume that paper.co is going to be really really important for English teachers so um it absolutely is for my students it has helped them get a lot of feedback where and this is how it benefits the teachers it saves Us hours of of you know the Deep feedback that um that paper can give them that um you know we would do and it would take time to do to get through that so we had the the first round where that's immediately what they do with their paper it it automatically goes to paper.co before it comes to us then we use that as they sit down with their Corrections or their feedback paper and their paper and then we have that conversation of okay so what does that look like when you have to change those things to make them better or what do you think they mean by that um so new things that we're doing also this year is um with the portrait of a graduate we really want them to know how to write scholarships and do things in the career process that um you know they haven't really done in the past but getting them ready they can turn in their portfolio their resume their cover letters so all of that can be turned in and getting feedback for that too so it's good for the English teachers for sure all right I'm up here as a social studies teacher who is helping support Ela and I found that as one of the most beneficial things is especially with my AP students being able to have them turn in one of their dbqs have those easy a lot easy obviously have those little specific things that I might not be grading content-wise that they're still getting in our social studies room as well as Ela so they're getting a double dose of this paper and this feedback of hey maybe my grammar is a little wrong my content's fantastic but putting a comma in the sentence is going to mean a whole world of difference of this thesis um it's also been really beneficial especially with those AP students for quick feedback on a thesis I always had oh I had a fantastic coach tell me you needed to be able to tell someone to do something three different ways to make sure it's stuck and with my AP students I find this is pile I don't agree with how you said my thesis is wrong I'm like okay totally let's toss it into paper and see what happens paper comes back and they're like oh maybe adjust that or turn it into one sentence I'm like huh imagine that but it's been great to have that instant feedback of another professional guiding these students towards better writing both for ELA and for social study thank you [Applause] all right thanks again to our guests for coming out and if you sneak out the back door we won't we won't notice um so I'm going to go back a little bit now because we want to start with papers so those folks could go about the evening if they needed to and go ahead and bring up Miss Denise Dunwoody who's going to talk to you a little bit about some of our assessment data specifically our screener and Benchmark data so far this year good evening Madam president members of the board Dr Wyman um I can't believe I have to follow that so all righty then how can I pep this up what kind of assessment pep rally can I present so I am going to talk a little bit about where we're what we've done and where we want to go with the data that we've collected so far so first thing to talk about is our screeners so we use fast bridge and we did our screeners in reading and math and those are going to tell us the skill set that students have as they begin that Journey Through the curricular resources through what we're doing in class and the content that they're exploring so you can look at risk factors for students what do we need to support them in what small groups did we pull right now we've completed the K-12 reading and math screeners and we are working on the K-12 Sabers which is our social emotional work that teachers do and they they look at students and so we're completing those right now and those will be done by the 16th um where we're headed well we're going to take this data and most most schools are already doing this and look at areas of support what do students need to access content and then we prepare for our next screening cycle so that we can compare that data so looking first here at our k6 reading so all of these words up at the top are great you know we have to remember what all of these different things mean at different grade levels so I'll just give you the Snippets so our early reading for our Kinder in first grade those are things like phonemic awareness letter sounds can they identify upper and lower case words the a reading is our adaptive it's like the broad reading skills the CBM or the curricular based measurement reading that's looking at your fluency words per minute and then our Auto Reading which is the the heavy duty that's decoding uh words similarities and differences in word meanings and recognizing letter sounds and spelling and things like that so as you look through this and you think about where we're at at the beginning of the year when you look at this what it says is that we have students coming in with a skill set that we can work towards and build upon and if you go into the lower right hand corner you see that our fourth fifth and sixth graders are really ready to access content and ready to move forward and ready to progress through the curriculum same thing with our 7th through 12th graders we have as you as as you can predict our a reading is more of that adaptive test what students are doing with those skills and then our Auto Reading is the foundational skills they have so it does make sense that our that our Auto reading scores are a little bit higher and then the next time when we report out we'll hope that the the small group work those uh skills that we're teaching in the classroom the interventions that are put into place will help build that a reading score how many times you guys do this a year this is three times a year okay so you've done it once already this is the first one yeah all right so math very similar um the early math is that number recognition uh number quantity relationships the a math is the adaptive math skills and then that curricular based measurement for math is the math facts operations and so again when we're looking at this we see that our students are coming to us with the skill set to begin processing standards at their grade level and here's our 7th through 12th grade there are some areas where we need to work on pulling small groups and that's what we do with this data we make those decisions and the teachers in the classroom work diligently to find what what needs to be done to support students so they can access the curriculum at their grade level so the next piece of the puzzle is benchmark assessments and so benchmarks for our third to eighth grade students are in the form of a mimic so we're doing a prediction of how well they were they will perform on the aasa if it were taken today and then when we do it in the middle of the year we say now at the middle of the Year what's the prediction so we have completed the third through eighth grade aasa mimics in ela and math and the high school is doing something a little bit different they're doing benchmarks based on the quarter's worth of work and so they don't have the aasa they have the act and so we're looking at just filling in the material that high school students need and they're doing that right now so we don't have that data yet but October's right around the corner so we will have that data to present next so in this we're looking to refine standards-based learning guide PLC conversation find those resources that teachers need and then the next Benchmark for the third to eighth grade will be in November so you can see here this is our proficiency or if prediction if students were to take aasa today this is the percentage of students who would be proficient so it's it's obvious that just like with our our screener that math is our area of focus it is something we need to work on and look at and see what we need to do to pull that up so with that in mind come with Solutions right that's what we want to do we want to have a plan moving forward so what's great about the program we use is what you can see on the screen right now this will break down for teachers for building leaders for anyone who wants to see it at the district level what standards are being covered who's mastering that standard and this is just an overall fourth grade district Ela what's great about the program we have is you can take it down to the level of school grade level teachers classroom and teachers can then click within this and pull out those rosters of students so they know who to support now in some cases these standards may not have been discussed or touched on yet at this point in the year but again you can see it for math as well so we have a plan in place we have the tools and we know where we need to put that Focus or our benchmark assessments and then utilizing that screener data so any questions for me the only thing I noticed is that there was something in the paper and on the news the last couple of days about test scores in Arizona going up but not being where they need to be and I think this is reflective of that as well absolutely right and we we did receive the updated scores and I can report to you that our scores only either stayed the same or went up our averages across the grade level bans so none of our scores went down based on the refined oddly none of the state scores change but that's that's you know I'm not I'm not doing their math work for them so but the state scores did not change per grade level but ours went up so it shows that they took that time to review the data but all right well thank you guys very much thank you I think Tim has a follow-up nothing like being the closer right um so just a one final update here um we did paper already let's get through that sorry um just some updates in terms of the hashtag forward and and those components that we've been working towards ties in really nicely with that data piece that's why I wanted to put this after that um what I really really want you to have is your take away from that data that was done Woody shared is that our evidence shows us that our students are actually coming into us uh the beginning of the year with a solid skill set um so those screener diagnostic numbers show us that they have the skills necessary to learn what our Benchmark data is telling us is that we have some work to do in terms of upping the rigor in the classroom um because where our student struggles with those more complex problems and our data shows that out so if you look at the work that we've done with hashtag forward that breaks down into multiple goal cycles and we we started with Goal cycle one and we're really doing a big push to um and I always say close out and then people wins because it's really never finished but to move forward with Goal cycle one which is really those foundations of the modern learning environment and really those procedural pieces in the classroom we really want to get ourselves moved more with a more of a focus on goal cycle too because that's the rigor component in what we've worked on with hashtag forward so that's really our big push um this year is to take a look at that and and move ourselves forward um so these are some of the action steps that we have in place right now um the first one is our literacy goal which simply means that everyone within our organization all of our certified staff our goal is to have a hundred percent have that literacy knowledge so they know what we're talking about when we talk about a modern learning environment and those elements of transparency um step two then is our fluency goal which means those are those are folks putting it into application getting into usage our system has goals of 10 30 and 60 percent we met with our steering committee back on the 31st and kind of put together a timeline and a plan to move these pieces forward that included some work with instructional rounds that we've been completing over the last week we finished those up next week so our principals have partnered up and gone out to Sister School sites to walk in classrooms and utilize our walk-through form to really evaluate where we're at in that goal cycle one again trying to move us to having fluency in that goal um some step four of course is our ongoing professional development a big focus of course comes up on October 10th so I know that our team is very grateful we'll say thank you for moving it back to the 12th for the board meeting because the 10th is a doozy of a day for our team and all of that professional learning and what you'll see then with that professional learning and uh Miss middaugh will share with that on the October 12th meeting but a lot of our focus on the October 10th is finishing up those goal Cycle One pieces and really moving that shift to the focus on rigor in the classroom and what that looks like and then step five of course being our purposeful assessment piece is really guiding our teachers on using that data which Miss Dunn Woody shared tonight so those are some of the pieces that we are working on in relation to hashtag forward and and some of those initiatives going on questions I don't have any questions I really do appreciate you guys bringing in the students and the teachers and letting us know like exactly like it's nice to see how they're saying instead of you guys just telling us that they're doing it it's nice to hear it right from them that was exactly the goal you don't need to hear it from me hear it from them so any other questions anything that uh you want to see at the next board meeting that we can prepare for you beautiful thank you thank you okay we'll move on to 9.2 discussion and consideration of approval of changes to policy recommendations from the asab asba policy advisory 716 and policy advisory 717-736 the first reading does anybody have any questions on this first reading and Dr Wyman do you have anything that you want to highlight now there's not really anything to highlight again you'll see a bunch between 717 and 736 and that's just because those are all the laws that were passed this past legislative session uh obviously the way asba breaks them out you can you can take a look at the three big areas that they're talking about which is the parental rights and transparency uh Health through covid-19 and then the school business and operations and curricular stuff I would anticipate that that we will continue to see significant numbers of changes in legislative uh stuff so you will end up getting something very similar in future years because I think there's going to be lots of changes to the law relative to any number of these issues but just take a look at them and then if there is a specific question about one of them or several of them please feel to reach please feel free to reach out but again for the most part they're just uh what the law states and so they just have that information in them so it's it's not I mean we can have a philosophical debate but at the end of the day it's just what the new laws say and and then we'll bring them back next uh uh meeting and it'll be just in bulk approval it's not going to go through each one of them individually it'll just be a bulk approval okay any questions I like the one that was seven pages I didn't like the one that was 99 pages too much to go through and there was no questions that was just like nightly reading yeah put me to sleep I'm sure it did okay so um for the next agenda future agenda items I have a couple um one I'd like an update on campus security and what's going what's happening um at the campuses just because I know it's a Hot Topic right now so um I'd like that to be you will be having the emergency response plan will be brought to you for approval okay plus we'll do some additional information on other stuff but we're changing the emergency response plan that's probably going to be much more detailed just a reminder to you however that emergency response plan is an executive content only so the only people that will see it will be you guys not even the administration can see it they have their own copies that they get but but the public doesn't get to see it uh it's because against the law given the nature of the information but that'll be coming forward I do know that that was radios new radios at the high school right how'd that work out okay do we need at other campuses we are working on that as we speak how do we expand them and what's the cost and how do we purchase them and and and and and we'll talk about that but what we're trying to do with that system and repeaters so that that all all radios throughout the entire District can be connected together oh that's that's good okay um also um October board meeting um apparently is going to be fairly long so um within that board meeting we are supposed to do superintendent goals so I wanted to know if you guys would be willing to do a special board meeting just for superintendent goals like and kind of break that one up I don't want to be here after eight I cry because I'm tired so that's fine when you want to do it um well I was when are you gonna be out of town the 11th through the but will you be here on September 28th I get back on the 26th yes that's a Friday no I thought she was very talk in October no September oh September September because I want it because the next weekend wait a minute so then then it would be two weeks before we do right yeah it would be two weeks and then we do the regular board meeting is that good or no order me it's open so we good everybody on board okay I just don't want to be here for four hours like so what time you want to start it what time's good for you guys six again or can we do 5 30.
