eagles need another stop here trips to left side empty backfield Carter Hicks trying to force it back in it's going to go incomplete good job there Don vaguely good timing [Music] so now Central is going to have to punt I believe oh Breeze I promise Alex I will not get into it with anybody this year in the fourth quarter East Alton Woodward Wood River Trails Roxanna 2119 as we're watching that scoreboard who two good games going down to the wire fourth and eight from their 39 Central in punt formation and they will punt good Punk gonna be caught by vaguely no he's gonna let it bounce it checks up and it's gonna go out at the nine I think Dom wanted to pick that one up there and you don't really didn't want the ball inside the 10-yard line but a great punt two great punts back to back setting up great field position for the defensive sides of the ball and now if you're coach Horner you just want to have it put together a good drive here pick up four or five first downs to get downfield we haven't been able to do that much tonight first half I think we got the ball down I think we had like one good drive because I mean the first two times we touched it we scored but I think we had one one good drive where we got down to about the 30 or the 35 and I think we got a couple penalties that backed us up and then we went forward on fourth down and we're not able to get it empty backfield four vaguely he runs to the right puts foot in the ground gets back up field gain of four maybe five Eagles starting at the six yard line their own six 10-15 in the fourth quarter they are going to give him five second and five from the 11.

I'd like to see Columbia put a drive together here haven't done it tonight I haven't heard Mike's name a lot see if we can get him a little action catching the ball out of the backfield gonna be a handoff to Yannick look like he was supposed to go to the right side but he went left gonna be a gain of one third and four vaguely was looking to hand it off to the right Janik went left and was able to come back to the right third and four [Applause] tight end right Carter Hicks ball in the middle of the field Brendan wike your sniffer back to the right side doubles to the right side empty backfield with vaguely he's going to take the snap run it to the right he's gonna have cut back up field keeps his eyes down field he's got himself a first down he's going to turn on oh baby he's got to go baby keep the feet moving down he's got the 30.

he's gonna have one man he's got to beat 20 10 getting the endzone vaguely this morning Dominic vaguely good from 88 yards touchdown Dom vaguely have yourself a night young man [Music] [Applause] play that was running to the right side Dom kept his feet and his eyes moving down field and runs away from the rest folks welcome to the Dom vaguely show I enjoy when he gets up to the kicking block for the Pats he just kneels down next to it so an important play right here under 10 seconds to go on the play clock High snap gets it down good job Zach Wetzel gets it up and it is good that all starts right there with Zach Wetzel good job hitting it down as he had to stand up to get it so that takes the Mandy McGuire group Scoreboard on a third and four Dominic vaguely goes 88 yards me and McGuire reads 903 on the clock 28-21 Columbia leads it I only wanted to put a drive together we don't need to put a drive together if we can do that I stood up right when he reversed field Alex I I I knew he was gone right when he reversed field because there was one guy he had to beat Annie I ran him broke about two or three tackles and that's that's definitely the one we wish you guys could see that that play was that was beautiful we might have to see if we can put some highlights together from the nafhs website or something a lot of fun here tonight from Breeze Central he's got to be getting close to that thousand yard oh he's had over 230 yards rushing tonight is that 230 yards in touchdown runs I think what is that four rushing touchdowns tonight he's got all four of them does he yeah didn't we have a water up here thank you sir I still got my ski you're good and I'm taking all the time you can to walk out to the kicking block take a little breather he's pitching for the Red Scout team this summer and it was kind of neat last week one of the biggest tournaments in the country happened down in Florida and uh they the red scout team said he can do it all three shutout Innings I think it was in Florida comes home does a great game in the homecoming game I think he was homecoming queen last week he comes back and we're gonna set it up to kick now going left or right and it just died again here in brief Sanford it's quiet good kick gonna be caught at the eight yard line they're gonna run towards us they faked the reverse good job Mason vaguely make a tackle at the 10.

he comes up empty now it's gonna have to be number 11 for the Eagles no he keeps his feet moving Ben Scott's able to come make the tackle as Nick janick had a shot at a tackle but they get it all the way back to the 27-yard line and I have a feeling I don't know if they will I might be wrong here but I could see Central panic in here and wanting to throw throw the ball around a little more but if I were them I would keep it on the ground keep running the ball try to get downfield and then maybe you can take your shot inside the Red Zone but I would definitely keep running the ball now hand the ball off up the middle they're gonna bend it to the outside Carter Hicks is going to have to make a tackle and he does good job there by Carter he got sucked in a little bit but he was able to recover and he makes a tackle but it's good for about 20.

and first down Central they've had a couple plays like that where they get a big play on first down and then they'll throw the ball in this first down and then they'll throw it again and then they'll have a third and ten just like that with only five seconds off the clock so we'll see if they uh call something different here after picking up a big first down there I thought he stayed in bounds on the tackle but they marked him as out of bounds 8 41 remaining in the fourth quarter Eagles lead it 28-21 they're gonna run to the left side good job forcing it in Peyton Andrews we lose contain mace Mason Schnabel tackles but it's good for another 11 yards and a first down shouldn't that clock be running it should be started now because the balls move the chains are set he was tackled in bounds too still not there we go that's still 10 seconds though like so they're gonna send another wide receiver out trips to the right side ball on the left left hash approaching eight minutes to go empty backfield tight end left sniffer back right all at the Eagles 40-yard line quarterback right up the middle good job there Joe Fish nearly made the tackle in the backfield quarterback keeps his feet moving and gains five they're gonna give him six second and four 7 45 left now in this ball game and you're just asking for Coach Jermaine and his defense just to get one stop same formation same play right up the middle again this time Logan Hicks making the tackle in the backfield Joe kisses down he's giving you your defensive line to make a play right now this is it third down and three and they'll most likely go for it so you got two two big plays here as Stefan checks out looks like they're gonna bring another big boy in that's Mason Schnabel so they're gonna have that four-man front floor down lineman this is the one time you need that defensive line to do something special watch the ball good job hard count nothing going looks like they're going to bring wike on a blitz from the outside coming up to the line of scrimmage they're gonna hand it off right up the middle and that's where they're gonna go get the first down gain of five First and Ten under seven minutes to go now [Applause] kids on the tackle and the first down here First and Ten ball at the Eagles 38-year 28 yard line Central really controlling the clock here tonight and they've done it all night because we score in one or two plays a good point same formation doubles to the right side running back right up the middle he's going to try to bend to the outside he can't do it because Joe Kish grabs on and holds on to him right back to the line of scrimmage for rockers and nothing going 6 15 now no gain second and ten come on defense this is what you want now second and ten get it into it good third and seven third and eight here East Alton's taking the lead 27-21 over Roxanna doubles to the right side I'm sorry trips to the right side trips right ball on the left hash sniffer back right we're gonna have to burn one and Breeze is going to burden one and we will burn one too we are gonna head to a break and we will be back with the final 5 46 from Breeze Eagles lead it 28-21 welcome back to kchs Eagles and cougars in a tight one 28-21 546 I told Jared in the break I said you'll be standing up in no time he said you're right I will be trips to the right side quarterback's gonna tuck it he's gonna go up the middle Logan Hicks nearly gets a sack but forward momentum gain of six third and four down territory here for the Cougars Coach G and Coach Amazon you need two stops right here looks like they're checking in Schnabel again bring that four-man front back in see if we can get a push on that front line and have a linebacker come in on a blitz and make a big play here to make it a crucial fourth down this is a big play empty backfield doubles on the right side sniffer back left they're gonna run to the left they're gonna run into the arms of Joe Kish have yourself a night young man gain a one fourth down and two need one more stop out of the Eagles defensive line now I'll give you Central Credit they've done everything tonight on these shortyard gains they've thrown the ball they've ran the ball so coach G's gotta stop it all here when we thought they're gonna run they threw and we thought they were gonna throw they ran need one stop this could be your ball game here 4 30.

doubles trips to the right side empty backfield quarterback's gonna throw it gonna find a little snag route he's gonna be open he's going to get into the end zone touchdown cougars [Music] funny how they changed so quick all these fans [Applause] foreign we've seen one extra point block tonight no way they're going for two Take the Lead why not why not you got a field goal kickering down vaguely though so never over here so Central scores takes the score on the Mandy McGuire group scoreboard currently sits with 417 remaining 28-27. they're going for two doubles to the right side sniffer back right running back right rolling out to the right side number 17 tries to bend back in quarterback's got to tuck it he's going to keep his feet moving he's not going to get in good stop there Eagles defense good stop Eagles defense they maintain the lead 28-27 [Music] silences this sideline Eagles get at the stop 28-27 and it's not over yet I gotta call my nerves you have two timeouts if you're Central Columbia has all three now you start thinking do you go for an onside kick yes exactly so I think you kick it deep you show up two timeouts four minutes is a lot of time and I know we're probably gonna run the ball almost every time on this drive but you just gotta remember to tell Don Bagley and Janik and whoever's getting that ball you better cover that ball up do not fumble in this point of the game quick shout out to the Eagles soccer team as they beat jabot 2-1 Regional Championship game so the eagles with one big victory on the soccer field becoming Regional Champs 2-1 overage a bow Eagles football trying to do the same thing and they're going to overload this side looks like we are going to have an onside kick hope your hands teams out there Coach G white's moving up now as he notices it see what happens good kick there come on getting the big bounce Ben Scott high points the football great job Ben Scott Ben showing the UPS right there and he catches the ball at the 45 yards play there I love that for him man that's a crucial point and you know coach candle is going to tell them all about that over that's awesome wow I was a little nervous because he's he's not one of those wide receivers that's sure-handed but he he went up a high point of that ball he took a hit too great great job to hang on to it all right Eagles four minutes four minutes in a touchdown that's all we need doubles here Brennan wik's pretty far back he's gonna be your motion man if I had to guess he is they fake it to him quarterback Don Begley keeps it he goes up the middle puts on the brakes keeps the feet moving though he's gonna gain two about people give them three second and seven when you don't call your timeouts yet if you're pretty Central especially if they're getting four or five yards on first down you don't want to burn that time out you want to get maybe two yard two yard gain if you're on the defensive side bring up like a second and Eight Second and nine then you can burn your time out but that Dom got four yards Eagles Are Gonna Let the play clock go all the way down as far as they can 3 40 remaining they lead this one 28-27 empty backfield tight end left Hicks sniffer back left Brennan wike doubles the left side ball in the right hash vaguely with the empty backfield he runs it just quarterback keep to the left there you go he's gonna gain four third down and two and now Central is going to call a timeout 323 remaining in the ball game now like some sweating timeout Central we can go back outside if you want to coach Baker and Coach stump sitting right next to us and I don't think they've moved tonight except on that pass interference that was called knew we were in for a good one here and that's what we got thank you all for listening on kchs make sure you like And subscribe to all of our pages so you get the notifications the Holton meets Coaches Corner comes to you on Thursday nights on Spotify inside the nest if you search that we'll talk with all coaches every week as money as we can I guess you should say whoever's available a lot of them are doing dad duties so uh and Grandpa duties yeah and Grandpa dude he's yeah last week when we did the the show I could hear a uh a baby in the background and everyone's microphones were muted I couldn't figure it out and then I realized Coach G was the one talking he just called Jermaine yeah so the Eagles coming out third and two I think if I'm Bree Central I'm going to be blitzing and you got to be smart here if you're the Columbia uh lineman you got to know who you're gonna pick up who you're going to let go say we don't get it did we go for it do you do a hard count right here you know that breeze is going to be amped up yes let's see if coach Warner wants to do it we haven't done it tonight we're not going to Brendan weitzer lead back down baby gets the first down there for the Columbia Eagles he needed two he got two yards and one foot First and Ten for the Eagles that's huge clock is gonna tick yeah and I think let me only having what one time out left if you get one more first down you can run that clock down almost every play so you need one first down here Eagles are going to do doubles to the left side ball on the right hash tight end left sniffer back left oh yeah they do let the clock run down under 250 now fake it to the left side they run it to the right with vaguely he keeps his feet moving he's to the 40.

he's to the 35 nearly gets it more yardage he's got another first down though 237 remaining in the ball game ball up to Central 32. Columbia leads it 28-27 foreign Eagles doing a great job now and we need to manage the clock doing it now coach Warner said he wanted two and that Holton meets Coach's Corner now when you need to you got to get it done and they only got one time out left and you're already at this by the time yeah by the time this plays over it'll be under two minutes doubles to the left side same formation we're gonna call it this time we're going to run it to the left leg is going to have to stay in bounds as he takes it wide these are the 25 he goes down days and Bounds second down and maybe one we are under two minutes now second down and two let's hold on to that ball and all we've seen this drive is Don Bagley to the left down Bagel to the right and Dom vaguely hands on his hips he's worn out oh you wouldn't be you wouldn't be you almost got to think about handing the ball off now you don't want him being tired and making a mistake just from being worn out you only need two yards 127 second down and two come on Dom everyone I think I think you're going to him no you have to they're gonna go up the Middle with vaguely Central brings everyone he's gonna get another first down and that might be your ball game right there First and Ten for the Eagles from the 21 115 remaining and that's all she wrote I think here you can kneel this one out if you're coach Warner let's go Victory get up into Victory formation that's what the Eagles are going to do what a ball game here from Bree Central wow Eagles go to Victory formation 55 seconds let it run all the way down might have to do it one more time takes a snap takes the knee 40 seconds on the play clock we are gonna have to do one more knee what a game there by the Columbia Eagles wow what a game that was probably the most exciting game we've called this year for sure absolutely and that's the first one that the Eagles have really been tested and had to get it get it done and we do you think we can meet them in the playoffs I don't know I mean say we both go in at seven and two we got a shot what a game there by the Eagles as they take the final knee fantastic game Columbia now with a share of the Cahokia conference I believe Wood River held on in that so that means three-way time there's a three-way tie for the Cahokia conference all teams are four and one in conference play oh this game this win Colombia improves to six and two welcome into week 10 football coach Horner once again I think in his 22 years he's been in the playoffs 20 times so great job there by coach Warner and staff getting to the playoffs Central Falls to six and two they were looking to hopefully get two more wins and that would get them a home game at 8-1 they could still get one at seven and two Jared what do you got to say about this game uh Tom Bagley um I know we've said it all year um how great how great of a kid he is and how I mean how much much it is how fun it is to watch him but that might be uh one of the best games I think I've ever seen played by a quarterback at the high school level especially for the Columbia Eagles uh he uh he put the team on his back tonight I bet he had 30 carries altogether I mean that last drive he probably had six to seven by himself picking up first downs left and right um and then having those four long touchdown runs um those would be fun to to listen to when we go back and uh hear our broadcast from tonight but um defense did what they I mean what they were meant to do and late late in that game I know they scored but getting that stop on second or on the two-point conversion uh basically won you the game there and then all you had to do is get three or four first downs like we did and now we're walking out of here with a win and you look at coach Warner there he's trying to get the guys into huddle real quick as they show a little bit of emotion and coach Brian short him Coach winner and Coach Jermaine they have great a lot of respect and friendship with one another as they all hug each other out at Midfield here as they shake hands so what a game we knew it was going to be fun Eagles get a share of the Cahokia conference and I think that's gonna do it here tonight I mean that was just a great game we thank you all for listening we'll come to you with that Holton meets Coaches Corner this Thursday night on Spotify inside the nest um and then next week we will take it to the aces wild pregame show we will have senior night at home we will have a audio and video broadcast against the Jerseyville Panthers I believe it is yep so Jerseyville next week four week nine Colombian proves two six and two just got word Roxanna 28 East Alton Wood River 27.

they have also included uh their budgets and such Dr Dale is here and also miss career if you have any questions move approval second by Dr Jenkins second by Miss White on the motion any discussion chair hearing that all in favor aye aye opposed promotion carries unanimously next one is our Orchestra wants to go to our nation's capital in April leaving on April 26th and coming back on April 30th I think they're gone Sunday Saturday Friday Thursday when leaving Wednesday and coming back on Sunday all the information is included in your packet including my synopsis for curriculum standards and a mission statement sounds like they're going to have a busy tour they're busy that's great busy uh it looks like a nice tour almost a nice tour and I mean some good education you know as I look at this uh good uh edges beside a good educational events inside too I have no concerns I'll make motion no proof yeah Mr Oliver's second right Ms Amaral on a motion any discussion it looks great see a hearing none all in favor aye opposed motion carries unanimously all right yeah the just so our audience is aware uh we did have uh a couple of school Improvement plans that were on the agenda for tonight uh for uh the high school and the Middle School uh unfortunately due to circumstances Beyond everybody's control um those are not going to happen we're going to move those to November 17th so that that's where that was going to be I think it's going to be the weekend 21st right Church shuffling a lot of things yes a lot of do we have two meetings in November yes yes I think so yeah yeah okay I don't have the seventh on my calendar but I'll take you know that would be my story of my life too busy either that either that or I put it in and then deleted it so yep that's fine okay uh next item on the agenda is the superintendent's evaluations summative uh first and foremost uh thank you to everyone for uh sending in your comments to Kathleen we did we met with Dr Gifford last Friday and we forgot to send I forgot to send this to miss Gunther so that she could forward it to you guys so I'm going to kind of go kind of going to go through and read this a little bit I'm not going to go through a Verbatim and such uh what I do want to do and I did tell Dr Gifford and Kathleen when we were doing this is I was just going to uh there's four four performance uh standards that go through unsatisfactory needs Improvement slash developing proficient which equals a proficient practice is understood to be fully satisfactory and also exemplary uh unsatisfactory as of course a performance on a standard has not significantly improved following ratings of needs Improvement needs Improvement of developing is performance on a standard or overall is below the requirements of a standard or overall but is not considered to be Beyond satisfactory Improvement is necessary and expected that type of deal proficient this is the rigorous expected level of performance that we would expect an exemplary a reading of exemplary indicates that practice significantly exceeds proficient and could serve as a model of practice regionally or Statewide I just want everyone to understand and I'll let my committee members correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think so when we those of us that took this training a number of years ago the comment was you know not a lot of exemplaries only because no disrespect it almost makes them like they're walking on water and then if there happens to be an issue and they drop down a proficient now it's like well he went from exemplary to proficient versus keeping them at the proficient level so uh this is this is there so uh on assessing progress towards goal uh District improvements uh one and two uh the committee is an agreement that Dr Gifford met those goals for professional practice okay let me back up for a second the categories the the rating would be did not meet some progress significant progress met or exceeded so again for district one and two the committee said that Dr Gifford met those goals on the professional practice again the same set of goals and the committee said that Dr Gifford met those practices uh uh in student learning uh the committee stated that there was some progress and Dr Gifford is in agreement with those and there's no issues on my from what I understand okay on step two it says assess performance on standards uh again as I said earlier you have the unsatisfactory needs Improvement proficient exemplary under a standard one for uh instructional leadership the committee said she was proficient understand the two for management and operation she said we said that she was proficient under standard three for family and Community engagement we said she was proficient so then uh step three on the uh end of cycle summative evaluation it says rate overall summative Performance Based on step one and two ratings and again the same four as before and we said that Dr Gifford was proficient uh under step four it says add evaluators comments and what we did is we just took everybody's comments and we kind of made a synopsis of uh what was there and uh it says comments and it says add evaluator comments and comments and Analysis are recommended for any rating but are required for an overall summative rating of exemplary needs Improvement or unsatisfactory or impact on student learning rating of high or low so you have that so the comments that we have put into this evaluation are as follows overall there is a consensus that Dr giffett has done a good job leading the district through trying times specifically the tremendous added burden of covet also a theme that emerged relative to her strength with curriculum development and school safety and that she is constantly trying to improve Dartmouth Public Schools another theme is a desire for improved family engagement better communication between the committee and a more authentic process for reciprocal communication with parents and Guardians so that's what we have put in there and then uh all the performance goals the student learnings and such are all here they're all proficient we will get that uh to Kate tomorrow and she'll get it forwarded to the rest of the committee perfect so that's what we have Kathleen and I have compiled based on your information and input we thank you very much for that we appreciate it Dr Gifford yeah thank you do you have any comments no I think we've we've uh done a lot of commenting on this this few months so I think we're good okay my committee members any Mary um I just want to thank uh you know John and Kathleen for you know all your work putting this together and meeting with Dr Gifford thank you it certainly was a tremendous amount of work and we really appreciate you synthesizing all of that so thank you very much both of you I'll always you know get we we talked about it and with my wonderful computer skills thank you to Kathleen for uh putting it all together very gracious of um Mr noons uh it was my fault not that it wasn't complete we meant Friday but um I just dropped the ball on that side now yeah he fell on the swords that's what the chairman does so if everyone is good I will take a motion to uh approve this evaluation because this goes into Dr Gifford's file can I can we postpone just because I I'd like to actually see the document before voting on it so it I don't have any objections but I just I don't necessarily feel comfortable voting on something that I haven't actually physically seen so could we just postpone that until next week I don't want any changes or anything like that I'd just like to see it if that's okay that way I don't use it okay can you just put that on the agenda as a reminder please thank you all right that takes care of that uh new business school committee policy first reading JF school admissions Dr Gifford yes thank you so just a little history on this policy as you know we work really hard to maintain residency requirements in the district and I guess to our to our praise I suppose we come across many many many people that have given false information to attend Dartmouth public schools and thanks to our residency people Nelly Alfonso does a lot of work and Chris winterson our residency officer we and I don't want to use the word catch but I will um we are we become aware of many people that don't reside here and um so we work hard at making sure that they attend the school district where the town that they live in unfortunately there are many Avenues by which they can provide not so true documents and also appeal to Desi and then Desi doesn't know what's happening and then they go through this reporting system and all of this so one such issue that we had last year which we're still positive the parents live in another town and drop the child off it a relative's house and um continue to come so we asked them to leave the district they appealed to Desi and then through multiple conversations with Desi and providing our entire report and information they decided to actually have us do an action plan into corrective action because they said our policy was not conforming to the state law which of course it comes from mask so every other District in the Commonwealth I guess doesn't meet the obligation either and that um our procedure we have the procedure document which people have to give the three columns of information whether it's a lease whatever it might be um electric bill Etc et cetera and that we have to provide flexibility which I assure you we do we we are whether it's a student that might have been here for a while and then they've either moved or they were caught we allow them to stay finish the year et cetera et cetera we provide a lot of flexibility if parents are divorced and one parent is in town and owns property they're allowed to stay because that parent owns property in Dartmouth whether the child is half with the mother a father or wherever it is so there's a lot of flexibility um in the in the in the procedures that we undertake so anyway uh trying to conform to what I I filed a narrative with Desi they asked some questions and I filed the narrative with them but one of them was that we update our policy to conform with the the law so I I told them we were having the policy subcommittee meeting which I forgot to tell Mary the date my apologies and um we did that and this so what we're proposing is that we would then submit to deci that this comes exactly from the legislation as you see here it doesn't say anything different so I don't know really and I did tell them when I filed the narrative about this that this comes from mask so evidently all the other districts in the state are not following a complying but they are it's it's so I think um in reality it's a kind of a shell game to be honest and that we have to file this with them and um their response to us was just continue to watch the parent this year and see if we can catch them again so that's fine the child is here but um with that said if you want to read this over as a first read and then once it's voted on at the next meeting it's fine and I'll submit to them that it was updated according to really the same mgl that we had before but just the exact wording so that's where we are yeah just quickly I just just going back just out of you know just to clarify something when you mention if you have divorced parents the the parent has to own property just running also if you mean rent as well okay I just wanted to exactly exactly exactly but it's the ones and then we have a real hard time with that um they do not live here at all and they're using someone else's address we find families sometimes they're we have a really good office that really is aware of what's going on they'll be all of a sudden 10 families supposedly living in a two-bedroom house so it's it's but we're on it as you know as best as possible and then just with the high school and of course they can do school choice so that's to mitigate you know yeah anyway yeah exactly exactly and again if if a student even if a student moves say in their senior year they've been with us a long time I'd say 99 of the time they're allowed to con complete their years you know this is always we check on are they on track to graduate is it going to be two more years kind of there's a lot of flexibility but it's when they try to go around the system it we have to keep on top of it so anyway any other questions comment Dr Jenkins so I'll just ask one question and that's whether we I know this is taken directly from state law and they probably don't have a policy but whether we not we use gender neutral language in our policy either replacing he with he she or they or the child or the student I just think is perhaps good practice to use gender neutral language yeah that's fine it's a editorial comment more than anything yeah okay okay all right so next time we're already there yeah there we go okay superintendent's update all right a couple of updates for tonight um let's see I wrote on that was the that was Renee's comment so that's the wrong page okay as as we told you and I know I don't know if anybody else will have anything to say but we did get to tour um New Bedford vote today and it was a nice we had a nice meeting it was a lot of folks from town hall attended as well and actually it was really impressive to see the programs that they're running and um they're welcome welcome here anytime they're willing to come or continue those kinds of meetings so maybe you'll get a chance to go at some point um the cook Center we're continuing with our video of virtual sessions so on 10 18 today's the 16th 17th 17th so it's tomorrow um there'll be a an out we'll post it tomorrow folks should have received information about this virtual it's um how parents can help prevent suicide a really tough Pro um topic but again there for parents to view if they feel that that's something that can they can help with and also we'll be sending home in the backpacks from the cook Center a reminder for parents that they can sign up for that coaching that individual coaching with that group um also we do we have continued to work with the nurses and Katie paveo is helping with that and Lori joban as well as the again continuing that allergy awareness documents that uh folks are sharing in the schools that are providing information for parents to as we talked about before allergy awareness they can sit where they want um PTO providing food et cetera et cetera so we'll have those just finalizing some of those documents coming up we did have some questions on the student advisory I know I sent out that um not sure where we are with that we did receive it seems like a little bit of a different information but the from Tracy Novak who's one of the field reps from mask stated in response to someone else's question about this actually that when you all talked about like a representative that the whole committee should work with the student advisor so I I just want to put that out there that I don't quite know where we are with that um the process so you can you can talk about that um and you you heard me talk about the learn launch which is the group we've been working with through deci as along with working with Envision learning as well as we work towards our strategic plan but the learn launch piece is explicitly about fostering relationships and inclusiveness so we've done some work with them and they visited our school district this past week and had a little tour of some of the schools and we'll be waiting to hear from them about some of their observations and of course the home show which I know Mr Nunes we'll talk about and other than that I I do have an announcement to make and um I always talked to Mr Nunes about this but I will be retiring I'm announcing my retiring as of March one so I wanted you all to know um I've let my leadership team know so none of them are surprised but it's uh I said Mr news tonight I've never done this before so it's just time as as everyone comes to time that it's time to go and time to deal with some family issues and and some of the other I say direct my energies in another way so I know we'll have more chances to chat about that but obviously it's been an sorry no how many years Dr Gifford 32 for me but 32 years this was my eighth year here yeah in your eighth year so a lot to think about but anyway I'll stop for there thank you thank you thank you I gave Mr news my letter to myself yeah thank you uh I have a letter from Dr Gifford is October 17 2022 dear school committee members it is with mixed emotions I write to inform you that I have decided to retire on March 1st 2023.

having spent 32 years working in the field of Education it's now time to redirect my energies and spend more time with family seems like yesterday I began my teaching career in Westport and just like that 32 years have flown by I can only hope that my work has had a positive impact on the many students I had the privilege of teaching and the numerous colleagues Who provided support camaraderie and friendship along the way I am grateful for my time in Dartmouth leading such an exemplary district has been an honor and pleasure not not to mention no to mention possible because of the tremendous team of people who work here due to their dedication and talent our district has flourished and I am confident it will continue to do so in the years to come as I am back on new adventures I wish to them at the public school district much continued success sincerely Bonnie Gifford I don't think we're going to leave it there you've given six months for us to you know keep working on it a little more Kate if you put this on the November 7th we'll have a busy meeting though we don't have a busy meeting November 7th what type of deal but seriously what we have to do is we have to start two things we've got to do is number one start looking uh at trying to get an interim superintendent okay and number two getting the search committees in and interviewing them and putting uh a search out there for a superintendent to uh to start good Lord willing uh July for us we're a little bit behind the eight ball because normally no no don't please no no biggie no biggie uh I've seen it done I know I've seen it done from March type of deal I was just gonna say I would but I'll thank Dr Gifford for giving us the you know that much notice yeah I tossed and turned over it so it was it was funny at the show Saturday because she let me know Friday and uh he's the south of the group it was it you know she happened to mention Friday to to Kathleen and I you know that she was going to be doing that type of deal and you know she said you know she just said she's had some sleepless nights you know thinking about it and everything else and uh I said to her Saturday at the show just before rewards and that I said you sleeping better she did say yes so which which was good but uh thank you seriously uh thank you thank you you're welcome it's it's been an honor and a privilege well same here and uh it went so fast yeah you know and it's funny read your letter 30 to you that's my committee time I'm just thinking of that maybe it's your turn just look at two and a half years I always said I didn't think I'd be around this long but that's okay so that's okay so all right very good okay so that's what we have to that's what we have to look forward to don't take the type of deal uh couple of a couple of things yeah I'd like to give a did mention a thank you to um New Bedford vote for the hospitality this one I know Mr Oliver was there I'd like to give it uh Mr Kylie uh it was a real nice to see and going through the shops and you know that that type of deal and you know what what uh what they do and how they go about things and it was one of the of it was the cosmic the cosmetology cosmetology which was which was brand new type of do a brand new system brand new setup this year to you know see this give me an appointment for a haircut no they wouldn't no no they couldn't take mine they were going to try and braid I was trying to try to get them to braid mine but they didn't have enough time so you know that that that type of deal so but you know seriously you know in in very hospitable and willing to do whatever type of deal so that that was nice just want to take a moment uh next time we meet uh November 7th the sports teams will be into the tournament getting ready for the tournament so you know good luck to them as they go through that um thank you to miss Amaral and and Dr Gifford uh for the you know your help uh Saturday at our home show was much appreciated I know everybody's Here There and Everywhere so understood and much appreciated uh the band heads off to Cranston this week and then next weekend you know leaves Friday afternoon for uh Rutgers University for bands of America for two shows on Saturday and then get the kids up bright and early Sunday morning and head all the way back to reading for nesba finals so and then the following Saturday uh bought down to Giant stadium so that's a few couple of busy weeks coming up but that's all right they're young the student rep in Mr Smith and I have been playing phone tag but we'll I'll see Walter tonight to make an appointment to talk with him uh when we were having that discussion a couple of weeks ago I made the comment that I was going to try to get a hold of the attorney of the day to the Department of Division of local Services I got an email back from the gentleman who I happened also happen to know and he says they just handle local Municipal Finance issues I went you got to be kidding me you know but they suggested uh talking with Council which I'm you know again trying to do and when I asked about it you know did it have to be posted as an open meeting again pleaded the fifth and says call the Attorney General's office well I've called the attorney general's office three times you get this automated system and says they'll call you back they still haven't called back so I'm working on it just so everyone is you know I haven't you know forgotten about this or anything of that nature Dr Jenkins this may be a dumb question but could that just sort of be resolved by inviting them to to our meeting right they may not all be able to attend but I think given that a lot of us work right having a school day meeting with us is probably not going to happen and so then maybe we just set aside you know 10-15 minutes at the beginning of every other meeting every meeting whatever the law requires and whichever ones of them can come for that can come and if not but that allows us to comply with the law yeah I know you still have to talk about that maybe one potential solution is having them come to us as opposed to all of us trying to go to them yeah I want to ask Mr Martin if he knows did you have the election for the students you did okay okay good okay so good okay so that part of it that's fine very good so that's where all of that stands I just thank you for reminding me because I had a fleeting thought that's just what it did fleeted by uh that's all I have anybody have anything Ms Amaral I just have one engine the special education parent advisory council is holding our first in-person actual meeting since 2019.

um and so we are I think starting off on a good foot because a lot of a lot of our effort has been as with that hat on right now as a mom um has been to sort of legitimize ourselves in terms of like we're in the regulations you know that every district has to have a special education parent advisory Council and we kind of lead with that and yes we have our amazing resource Fair once a year that's now going to be in the spring may not May 7th I think um at the high school I hear again we often like don't talk about the other benefits that a CPAC can bring for both families and staff in the community which is you know resource sharing information aside from the resource fair and support so we're beginning our um our year at Cushman which is right you know 746 Dartmouth Street those of you don't know where it's located enter through the back of the school the meeting is going to be down in the in the cafeteria and so it's between 6 and 7 30 and I professionally I that's what I do I share resources I help engage families and educate them and about special education disability services and and whatnot and so I tried with well do I do that does Beth sort of lead the me how are we gonna and so I'm gonna do a little bit of everything and we've um I've invited a couple of resources so that they can take five ten minutes and share what benefit they'll bring to the community one is our greater New Bedford local Family Support Center a representative is going to come talk about how how to interact with them and what they provide and then parent Information Network which is funded through a more of a mental health non-profit Statewide our local representative is going to come talk about the parent support groups that they provide and that sort of thing and the rest will be just talking about the CPAC and how to get involved and and again how the CPAC can be that bridge is how I've worded it bridge to the school be a better partner feel more empowered feel more engaged and able to kind of participate in IEPs or 504 meetings so um tomorrow I'm excited six o'clock that Cushman good luck thank you um so I just wanted to you know just uh piggyback on Dr Gifford's introduction earlier about learn launch and I knew we were going to probably talk about that a bit tonight when we're originally going to have the school Improvement plans but I just wanted to you know I looked at that in preparation I did look ahead at that program just a bit and they do have two workshops coming up um I believe like one is for individual Educators who might want to jump on and get some you know additional professional development there is one on the 25th which is dealing with fostering a sense of belonging creating space for conversations about race and then there is an additional one that is supporting regulation strategies to Foster students sense of belonging which I know something we're talking about and that you know they're working towards next year and that is and each of those are two dates on Thursday this particular one both are in the afternoon so Thursday October 20th from three to five and then again Monday October 24th from two to four just because we won't be talking about that before right next meeting so just good opportunities from some professional development to and they're both free so yes just because if it's free it's good that's good good one thing I did forget uh to mention uh anybody going by the high school tomorrow night we'll probably see a lot of Casio town meeting tomorrow night uh seven o'clock so if you're a town meeting member hopefully we will see you all here take care of the town's business shouldn't be that bad Dr Jenkins so I missed the agenda setting meeting I apologize for that I had work commitments but I have a I have a request I don't know if we've um I have put this on the sort of the queue but there's just been a lot this fall about learning loss and how you know how much students have have lost and I know we get you know pictures from the schools and school Improvement plans but I know it's something that you all talk about a lot I'm sure and I'm just wondering if maybe we could have some sort of presentation doesn't have to be in November December you know it could be even January February but just something to sort of address and to let the public know and be reassured to make more visible all of the things we're doing to address those challenges it doesn't have to be sometimes we get presentations and like God love all our administrators but I want to say to them sometimes you don't have to spend that much time on your presentations right it could be short and concise but I think sometimes people don't really see all of the things we're doing and how we're directed to addressing those issues and so I think it might be helpful so maybe at some point you know in the next few months if you could share that I think it would be good for the community to know all the things that we're doing okay particularly bit all right anything else nope okay we're good all right our next meeting I think we beat it to death here November 7th 2022 6 30 here in the media center and at that this point in time the chair will entertain a motion to adjourn into executive session to provide an update with respective collective bargaining with Union personnel and not to return to open session move by Miss White second second by Mr Oliver on the motion any discussion we'll call vote please miss Gunther John Nunes yes Mary wheat yes Kathleen Amaral yeah yes yes thank you everyone happy trick-or-treating good night [Music]

I'm like what make sure there we go okay all right [Applause] please please join us to the flag of the United States yes Frost no here then Joseph here so here gorson moons and tire here do we have any correspondence no we didn't have anything and any visitor statements you have a segment okay we just asked to keep it to three minutes and um we don't usually take questions but if you do have a question or something that you want answered then we can arrange for a meeting later on to do that typically we don't we don't uh it's not a two-way conversation you make your statement and then either we'll address it later if it's on our agenda or if you would like an answer we will arrange for the right person to sit down well let's just how about make the statement and then we'll we'll um talk about it after but it's in the form the question the policy is I don't want to make a statement that I don't know whether it's true or not so that's why I want to ask your guys yeah well we'll follow up let's go ahead and ask it and then we will follow up with you you know I I want to be respectful that I don't know what you're okay yeah I appreciate that could you please state your name in the village Daniel vishni b-i-s-a-h-ny uh Buffalo Bill okay um uh one know does this uh School Board support uh teachers sharing uh their personal views on politics in the classroom um do you do you want to meet with Dr twadel or Mr gobble about that or both of them and um if you guys would be available and we made an appointment I don't know if that I don't know what your procedure is yeah absolutely that would be the procedure so we would welcome that is that something after the meeting that we can yeah and if you didn't want to stay you could just shoot one of us an email okay that was my only question okay great thank you thank you for the time of course um our Student Activities report Alex welcome all right hi everybody so today I'm just gonna be presenting on everything that went down since I last saw you guys and then up to this point so starting off with that academics recently the Juniors took the piece out I know this is a really stressful time for a lot of people you put myself in their shoes last year I was stressed out over this but it was really just a practice for them or a chance to earn the national scholarship or be qualified for it um which is kind of cool to see because my friends that took it last year along with myself um some of them were named a semifinalist within that qualifying test so that's just awesome to see that progress and that dedication towards trying to achieve the best academic level as possible and then in addition a lot of college stuff has been going down as all of you know that early decision early action deadline is coming up November 1st scary scary day but it's all gonna be okay because Stevenson has a lot of different resources and Personnel to help us through that process such as the info sessions held by the CCC just to CC staff in general helping us through that process by editing our essays looking over everything so it's just been really helpful through this journey and then also freshmen participating in scope meetings with their counselors just get a general gist of how high school is going to be laid out for them and to address any concerns that are maybe face it and then for more Club specific academic related activities Stevenson debate team competed at the icd-a-1 and a lot of them took home some top finishers so there's a lot of top three places a lot of Champions within that competition so that's just great to see people utilizing their passion in a competitive setting along with political action Club exploring um assimilation where they could either serve as trustees or military staffers within this specific event in Buffalo Grove Civics Forum uh so that's just a way to further explore their career Passions with different communities and different schools and then math team as well we are currently ranked first in the Liang which is awesome we have a lot of smart people at our school um but they also took a home of victory at the North Suburban Math League which was the first of the year so that's just awesome and then along with math team they also come participated and some service related activities as well utilizing that math so recently they held a really successful Carnival uh to support uh to assist kids with math so they had math associated with carnival games so you see darts not Corner uh some beanie boo thing in the right corner I I wasn't there I don't really know what that is but it is all math related and it was very successful a huge turnover so uh just great to see it's external Community getting involved estimate how many beats are in the Unicorn a thousands I still have like a million of those stored in my basement somewhere in a box but yeah I'm moving on to Athletics so the homecoming game was reset and a lot of people showed up if you haven't gone to a game before this was the chance to go it's a huge turnout you can see that a lot of people are on the fence right there just supporting our team we did take home a victory which is awesome to see on our homecoming day 14-0 against like Forest and we just had a lot of cheer and the last year is great to come together as a community as a school and unified with our friends with people we don't even know next to us just having fun and um senior night was also a very big thing to Federate those seniors participating in athletics over the past four years three years however long they participated in their sport we had boys soccer we had girls volleyball golf tennis swim and dive field hockey they all just got together and you know it's right there last year since then it's kind of sad but you know moving forward on a new chapter of her life so it's exciting as well then within the Arts we had a lot of fall Productions already take place so clue Alice Adventures in Wonderland was actually this past weekend I had a friend who played Queen of Hearts and was really excited to just you know scream off with your head just the entire performance yeah but they're really great performances um again great ways for students and students to just participate in their passion and showcase it for the rest of us to see and then there's a oh sorry for musical purposes there was the fall band and choir concert so again just to bring light to the community um while doing what they love and then homecoming itself so the dance was crazy I think we have the highest turnout we've ever had before 3 000 kids Mr gobble was saying we could have had made it a school day maybe a school day on a Saturday it was a great turnout we had a lot of fun everyone's just mashing away we're very close-knit community in that setting uh but just a great way to you know celebrate with your friends that's me and a group of my friends before when we took pictures and just got ready um so that was just a really fun experience and you know it's kind of it's kind of sad because it's our last homecoming for seniors so we really just got the opportunity to celebrate that and you know spend time together before we all move on but addition uh the homecoming dance there was a bunch of spirit activities to just promote that school spirit so we had a roller rink outside of the pool patio and then addition to different dress-up days so holiday day not right hand corner someone's dressed as Santa and funny sweater ah just go there uh just color Wars day um so yeah that was just a great way to bring all of us together and a special thank you to the PPA provided the roller oh yes and all that stuff kids had so much fun on roller skates so yes thank you to the PPA crowd for sure and then the NHS blood drive so that was also pretty recent too on October 7th um but it was in honor of Jake kinging he's a wrestler here at Stevenson with pediatric cancer and recently he had a surgery where he needed 28 units of blood and unfortunately today there's a blood shortage um so just having these having this Blood access is especially essential right now um so we were able to save approximately 200 lives 250 plus lives so that's just awesome um each student got to you know besides saving three lives they got to learn their blood type they got some snacks too to just stay awake not pass out um but yeah it was a really good service experience for those students along with having a meaningful impact to those people who need blood there's a shortage I was helping soldiers so I recently assisted bikers during the 500 gold star 500 Bike Race So providing them with water unloading trailers food Etc and they collaborated at the veterans of foreign war for the winter coat and Hoodie drive just collecting goods for veterans in need so that's the picture on the right at the bike race um you know just another example of our amazing students and community and the ways they what they do to help the community around them and then Isa so this past month has been diversity month I know the Freshman recently received a presentation about fire and the importance of um using certain language and stopping certain language when it comes to that and celebrating everyone's diversity um so Isa the Indian Student Association recently had their Garba so that's just to celebrate their Traditions as well come together and perform a special dance at school so that was just a great way um to you know participate in Traditions and come together as a community experiences so I asked four different people in four different clubs about a specific Club they participate in or lead and what they got out of that and some highlights from that as well so first person things are going really well we increased our membership from 30 people for my freshman year to 200 people a new record we're planning a lot of different activities such as shs hacks while also finding ways to utilize their passion to give back to the community um so just seeing a number shoot up from 30 to 200 is rewarding and shows that student like how much they have done to make that club grow and their impact on other people and spreading their passion to other people and then just for something fun every Thursday I bring friends to the club where we play table tennis for fun and take a break from school stressors it's a great outlet for me to relax for an hour while doing something I enjoy so again not everything is just about academics academics you have to find that balance as well and for the student it's table Thomas and that's an outlet for him to just de-stress and like many other students and students they have their own Outlet to de-stress so that's something you need to see they might not they might just be there to de-stress and I can't beat any of them they're very good yeah some of them compete as well so and then recently Taiwanese Culture Club opened up they've they had their first meeting ever these students worked really hard throughout sophomore year and Junior you're going to make this a reality um just to make sure that their culture um their culture was represented so this student said Taiwanese Culture Club has something we have been trying to establish since sophomore year and I'm really happy that the idea we had is finally becoming a reality so again just that work ethic that passion to work hard on something and like you said make it become a reality and it did and it was really successful they had a good meeting and then finally FTC is my favorite Club because I get to participate in a lot of specific service trips while being a part of a technic Community again that just emphasizes how close we are um as esteems the community and also our individual communities within yeah so yeah we're good thank you thank you I love the quotes ah thank you any questions if you wanted to cheer as your fan because I remember [Applause] thank you thank you she's gonna be right back I'll be back okay yep okay well um we are excited to uh have everybody here tonight I am assuming uh not Sean for your Pepsi contract but instead for the Ambassador Awards um and for those who um may or may not know we um Reserve Stevenson's highest award uh for student the ambassador award for students who um either win a state championship or score um you know a perfect score on the ECT or sat so kind of the highest levels of of achievement that students can um can be awarded either academically or co-curricularly so tonight we're very excited to recognize students in our HOSA uh club and uh our student in our AP program so Mr gobble yep take it away so uh we have a lot of people to recognize tonight and we're going to call them up one at a time and then we'll give you plenty of time for pictures so moms and dads if you're in the room when we're handing over we'll give you a moment to take that individual shot and then we're also going to bring everybody up and you'll get a chance to get some great group photos at the end I do want to recognize right off the bat we have someone who couldn't attend today but their their award is just so amazing that I think we need to spend some time to get in the public record we had a student who achieved a perfect score on an AP exam and some of you might be thinking like Fox kid gets five on their AP exam I don't mean she got five I mean she didn't miss any questions she got every single question right and that only happens to like 40 people in the entire country for all of the exams right this is incredibly rare she couldn't make it tonight uh the test was the two-dimensional art um a two-dimensional art class which is just incredible to imagine she had to create art and answer questions and that award would be for Abigail Zhang so we are we are thrilled she'll get her plaque and I wish she could be here tonight to celebrate but that one I think is absolutely amazing the second group that we're here to recognize we got like half the room filled out there host uh hosta is a club um that we have at school here that's I think the members 300 right I think there's like 300 folks that are involved in this club yeah that's uh yeah that's a high school in some cases right so uh that's pretty amazing we're gonna call you in one at a time you'll get the chance to get your award and we're going to start uh with reshma but a goal come on forward [Applause] stay right and then if you just want to move over to the edge we'll just start lining people up here yep so uh we have vika Eiffel okay uh Reedy Bank what [Applause] scene congratulations Emerald Dash Shar you Darrow [Applause] all right Joy Faye Abigail uh fresh setter akshaya ganji foreign [Applause] [Music] thank you foreign [Applause] thank you congratulations [Applause] hmm Christina Moe Tricia mondal kashmi nagpal [Applause] arjunaire thank you so much Sarah narula foreign [Music] [Applause] something young [Applause] I love it when it gets so full that there's no space up here we're getting to a ward uh ratania subramanian Annie Thomas and Thomas [Applause] Murphy [Applause] chili [Applause] and last but not least the glue that holds this whole group together Coach Jill Littman [Applause] all right so in just a minute we're gonna have the board ask you guys a couple questions about what you've done but first we want you to squish in here we're gonna need some tall folks in the back we're gonna have to do a couple of rows to get you in we want to get a picture of everybody so just spread out yep we're gonna go that way first yep we're gonna so tall folks in the back give me like three rows here if we can pull that off okay big smiles make sure you can see everybody's faces parents if you need to move around this is your chance get a good one [Applause] foreign [Music] [Laughter] if you have any questions you'd like to know about their experience well first of all could you tell us what HOSA stands for help occupation students in America oh okay so you're doing presentations on careers in Health Sciences or what types of projects mental is in line with that um specifically what I did I did a team organization where I chose the target audience so we using features and presented on a health issue that would relate to them so I did skin cancer awareness with my team and then we created a portfolio on that process including some pictures methods research and then created a final presentation it's relating to that portfolio so my question will be what makes you choose HOSA as your after school you know help me to join them awesome because there's so many clubs out there right so why you chose I think just like Alex mentioned there is so much Variety in the number of events and things that you can explore so even for me as someone who's not necessarily considering a career as a doctor it's just the ability to explore so many different Avenues in biology and Healthcare is really intriguing okay so can I go oh my gosh actually I'm looking for shopping like she's the best sponsor okay what were some of the other events that people did yeah we did an EMT it was also a partner event so the two of us are together there was the test portion of the event and then we had a skills portion where we had to actually do like some of the things that EMT used to do like splinting cast doing CPR stuff and we're given like a simulation so it was very Hands-On experiential which is one part that I like about hotel yeah you can also do like solo events if you want to like I did one where I studied like a biotechnology textbook and then there was like like how they had there was like a multiple choice test and then we Advanced like laboratory skills so I got to do real skills like streaking and Agri play and like blood typing and stuff like that so do you guys practice this is this what your meetings are like you're practicing all those types of things like the skills that's more interesting that's more independent I think in the music because there's over 50 events it's kind of hard to cover that yeah so the meeting is really tailored to what the member needs um and what's specific about their so I'm just doing math here if there's 50 events and there's 30 of you we won more than half of the events that's what I like to hear well congratulations thank you great job all right great job guys [Applause] we also want to thank the parents for being here and uh although we have the rest of our meeting to go if you wanted to make in somewhat awkward exit out and that would be the perfect time to do that thank you all for being here very much for coming everyone congratulations congratulations because [Laughter] no one put Stevie in the corner just so he can knock his head as many times all right well he's always fun to recognize our students however we also thoroughly enjoy um hearing the great work that our curriculum teams are doing and so as the board knows each month uh throughout the year we we have the opportunity to hear from some of our amazing faculty members about work that they're doing with respect to our social emotional learning initiative which is one of our district goals obviously and tonight we have members of our science division here who are to present and so Steve Uh Wood our director of science is here as well let's see if I'll let you introduce your team and yeah like Eric said it's hard to follow the kids always yeah [Music] Mormons hit these kids too along with their parents so I'm really excited to have the earth science team uh these three wonderful women have worked with Laurie this year but the cool thing is they've been doing this for years there's a culmination of a lot of the work that they've done and I know that their first slide is going to introduce themselves and some of their experience I'm going to turn it over to them and let them tell their story so I'm listed first there I am Jill Lucius and this is my 21st year teaching my 18th at Stevenson and currently I teach College Prep earth science and AP environmental science and hi I'm Molly sponseller it's my 10th year teaching here and in general and I this year am teaching all levels of earth science so collaborative earth science college prep for Science and Earth Science Matters my name is Deanna Wilkins this is my 21st year at Stevenson High School I'm also an Alum so you can tell that I just graduated from high school four years ago and um I teach College Prep earth science as well as collaborative earth science and accelerated chemistry thank you so we're going to start by telling giving you a little bit of like background on our students this year um so this we had um them are we at our students fill out a survey at the beginning of the year with just some like background information what class did you take before coming into our classroom um what they're involved in outside of school what if they have a job or not just like some different things and we're going to walk you through that this is the first um piece of information that we wanted to share with you because our class is sophomores Juniors and seniors and so what they are coming into our classroom the previous science knowledge that they have is really um varied um if you look the college prep physics is it makes up about 30 percent of our population those are our seniors that took College Prep physics as a junior um College Prep bio that's another 30 those are our sophomores that took biology as a freshman and then you'll kind of see the other it's a 40 in silos quick math okay a variety of different subjects at different levels the one thing that I wanted to um kind of highlight is that we have representation from collaborative biology so that's a co-taught class as a freshman that are now coming into our classroom typically as a sophomore or a junior so they've made their way into a mainstream class so this for some students is a really as a reach class and it's a time to um try science in a mainstream room so that's that ground we have a really diverse group of students with their student and life balance I know that some of the representation we saw a lot of students that were in HOSA but many of our students not only are they involved at Stevenson but they're also involved with work and they are also involved with care of other siblings at home so over the years we've noticed that many of our students have other things that they're doing at home besides Just Sports or activities that are affiliated with Stevenson and that has changed quite a bit in the past few years so now instead of going you know home and just taking care of themselves and their needs many students are working and we see that some of our students are even working 10 plus hours a week which is a lot in trying to maintain like they said we still have sophomores Juniors and seniors in our course so we have quite a diverse background even in where they they are at in their learning of science that we accommodate for in our class as well and something else that we just wanted to point out is the demographics of Stevenson are on the right in this image and the demographics of our class are on the left so we talked about this diversity and experiences this diversity and coursework prior to our class this diversity in just what level and knowledge the students are coming into our classes with we're also seeing some differences in demographics from our overall population so that just kind of lays the groundwork for what does our classroom look like so why then are we taking on this SEL test so for our first um work that we've done with some of our SEL we want to make sure that we're focusing on the sense of belonging because we want our students to see themselves as a successful scientist um throughout many of their careers at Stevenson some of them haven't taken the pathway that would lead them to maybe wanting to major or work in science and so they do not see themselves as scientists but in our classroom they are a scientist and they're doing all of the same work that other classes are doing where those students automatically Envision themselves as someone who takes science who is good at science and who will be successful in a science classroom so we build that academic confidence by making sure that we don't assign homework especially for all those reasons that we said before they are doing more outside the classroom than just school activities we make sure that they do sell self-assessments so they're aware of where they are at we do those with Google forms we also are one of the science courses that has an engineering project both semesters and what's really interesting is some of the students never saw themselves able to build things or fix things and um they will be someone who's going to watch a YouTube video and need to fix something and so just being able to say hey I can do that is going to save them a lot of money in the future there's also numerous pieces of evidence throughout our semester to show growth so we really work on you know what this unit or this task didn't go so well but you have many more opportunities in order to learn from those mistakes we do daily themes throughout our course so each day has a different SEL test like um on our Mondays we do brain puzzles we do thankful Thursdays we do group challenges on Fridays to really make sure that they're aware that SEO is important to us we also are very intentional with the way that we group students we often talk about what we should do with different challenges that we face with certain students we are also working on building emotional confidence because like I said some of the students do not see themselves as being successful in science so when they have self-reflection we will read that feedback some of the students we will individually talk to we make sure that we note to them the times that they have grown when we have seen that growth so that they realize that that's something that they are doing because some of them can't even recognize how much they have changed over time with the work that they're doing we make sure that we give sentence starters to begin discussions anytime we have a question how would you answer this who would go first because many of them are afraid to share some of their ideas and so by having a way to start they jump in a lot easier and then making sure that we connect the content to the real world which is easier because it's for science and then okay so we give the student voice survey like every class does this year we were able to be part of the pilot group so we were able to gain access to our data a little bit earlier so we reviewed the data and this is the one question we wanted to make sure to share with you because it kind of has guided our work for the year and what will come and the changes that we've made so the question is how much do you feel like you belong in this class um and so we had a 69 favorable response there are really two things on this slide that we wanted to point out one zero students reported that they do not belong at all so we like first of all say like yeah that's a win like good and then we look at those um two results that are highlighted and read like they belong a little bit they belong somewhat and those are really like our Target students of who we want to focus our work on we want them all of our students are belonging at somewhat like a little bit but we want them to be belonging quite a bit or completely belong and so we're trying to move from a little bit to a lot and why did we choose that and how did we get here uh we've kind of heard our students in this course over time have some negative self-talk about you know I can't do this or you know I didn't finish it because I didn't know how to do it and so how do we get them past that belonging gets them to a point that they're a lot more comfortable asking us those things um just in general this engineering project that we were talking about when they are initially approaching that there's some apprehension about how to set it up and we really break it down and show them step by step how to go about doing that and then they get to create this um build and we often find that's really a self-esteem Builder because we give them a challenge that they have to hold five pounds and they're all thinking I'm not going to be able to do it and most of them find that they are successful at it it sounds like a lot at first um so then it's more of can I hold 20 pounds after that uh overall we find that they have lower reading levels so how can we help them be comfortable in our class especially with these varied grade levels and these varied reading levels that's another thing that we often address that idea of we see them hesitate when they're starting challenges or different projects and activities in class and then there is some uncertainty when we ask them about what they want to do next or where they're planning on going to college some of them you know have a set uh plan some of them just really aren't sure or say oh I'm gonna do this for a few years but I'm not really sure so just building up their confidence through that sense of belonging is something that we value um thanks to these women they offered me a moment just because since I am new in this role and I know some of you are new at this table we thought we would take an opportunity with this presentation um just to do a little bit of review I know many of you have seen this numerous times but this is the framework that all of our Academic Teams use as we use our student voice data and so we will give the student voice survey both in the fall and then again in the spring and we use that as our grounding framework along with all of the self-report assessments Google forms Etc that they've already discussed that they are giving um and so just to go into this conversation of how do we come up with our errors of focus what is our conversation where what direction do we want to go and then I'll come back in a moment and sort of lay out the path way that we go through so for our students we've really focused on self-awareness like who are you what how do you contribute to the class and then relationship skills within the group members many of our challenges other than the ones that are for an actual assigned grade those are going to be in a group setting and so how do they manage problem solving and getting through a challenge all of our challenges are attainable for every group to meet that goal it is not a competition we set a goal a bar and then they work too um meet that and so for the action steps that we are currently not all the way through this like Lori said we just started um and we just got our data back so phase one for us um that would be just the prediction what do we think is going to happen and overall we would like to see growth throughout the year and overall see the students sense of belonging increase um we're really visualizing that we have seen an increase in data over time and we're hoping that our efforts will continue that Trend as we've been working on it for a couple of years um and right now we're in the observation phase um we're just looking at the data we're also collecting data in our classrooms through some of the forms that are more meaningful to our students so as I mentioned just a moment ago this is just the idea of Bridging the work that has been going on for years and then us continuing to build on what has taken place in the six plus years since we've started this SEL initiative um and so as you can see this team has been doing unbelievable work far before I got into this role and then now we will just continue that process with the current framework that we're working which is what you're seeing underneath here and so we'll continue to look at the feedback we'll continue to meet throughout the course of this year obviously and into the future so that we can see where the growth is taking place where the trends are happening continue to ask questions Etc and again just coming back to that balance of why we think student voice is so important and I know that this conversation came up at our last board meeting but just the idea of you know how do we know how do we know what we're actually doing and the answer is because we keep asking them and we will continue to keep asking them and hear it directly from the source so that we can use of their voice because their reality is their perspective and that can help us continue guide our work and this is really important to us like our students we really want them to see themselves in a more positive light and how they feel to us as teachers is just as important as their academic success so we do a lot of different things to check in so not only is it the Mastery of the content and how they how they do but also how they belong how they identify themselves as a scientist and really putting all of this together so the action steps that we're taking right now is our engineering practices and our challenges we are adding the sdl competencies in there so they can really see um what we are working on so instead of us just knowing about it we've really decided that we want to share that with the students so they get used to seeing some of the stuff that they are improving on and then we use self-assessment a lot with guiding questions especially in our team meetings we calibrate and we see where students are at what we can do differently with some of our practices to make sure that the students are in a place where they acknowledge their growth in SEL as as well we do that with go formative which is live as the students are responding we can see their answers we also use go for um we also use Google forms and then later on in the year this is not right now but we work on goal setting we don't set goals with them initially because we want them to see what level they're at and then see where they need to go to set a goal and so this is an example from last Friday the Friday before Friday Friday before thank you um we start with we have theme days and so on Fridays we always we call it fun Friday but it's a mini engineering task to prepare us for our end of semester engineering project which is obviously a bigger undertaking um and so this uh their fun Friday projects are always done in groups and so we just wanted to show you an example this is the step that we have one of the steps we've taken this year so we added that SEL competency component so again like Deanna said we're really just trying to increase awareness we were doing these activities anyway we have data from past years to show that like yes their belonging increases over the years which we'll show you in just a second um but we think that this will perhaps maybe move that even further into like more students completely belonging or um just have like more conversations throughout the year about it and increasing like our discussion of SEL and what that looks like in our classroom so this is just one of those examples and this then looks at that classroom belonging so this is that data again from the Panorama survey over time you can see starting from Spring of 2016 and then going through that time of covid and then um that 63 on the far right that is this fall and that's already up from last fall um and we are hoping you know our goal would be to kind of beat that 76 that we had in the spring of last year so we know that this is something that we are already building into our classes it's just we want to be that much more purposeful again we're looking at those students who were in the um feel a little or you know just um a bit uh comfortable or belonging to our classrooms those are the students that we're really looking to boost it's kind of where we go from here um we will really focus on like the data discussions moving forward so Deanna mentioned using Google forms and the date feedback we get from directly from the students we in our team meetings look at those Google Form results and so that can conversation will continue we'll also be meeting with Floria as the year continues to check in are these action steps appropriate like should we be adding more things taking those away making adjustments as we go um but we really think that highlighting the SEL standards to our students like showing it on the board verbally like explaining them um we are hoping to see a positive impact and when they get to the engineering challenge at the end of the semester it won't necessarily be like quantifiable data but we are hoping that they approach those challenges with even more confidence than we've seen in the past any questions I'm super interested in uh this this idea of belonging and I know when I talk with my children and I ask them questions like that I get varied different when you guys talk to kids about this data and specifically that question do you get a wide variety of responses about what it means to them to belong in a class I think absolutely yes yes um so belonging means something very different for different students and so I think that that's part of like we try to give ourselves a little bit of Grace when we look at that student voice survey because for some students it's appropriate to feel like they somewhat belong in a classroom like they are choosing that response as a positive response um so I think that we we try to remember that in our conversations because for some students it's like I feel like I belong because I know the person I'm sitting next to right versus I feel like I belong because the teacher respects me as a human being right like those are two wildly different things but I guess we just try to and something else that we've talked about is that culturally the way that we feel belonging is very different too so one student might feel by belonging because I ask them about their weekend where another student that might be I'm the teacher and I'm not supposed to be asking that sort of question of them because their view is you're the teacher you are not my friend in the same way so I think balancing that and helping them get a sense of belonging with their classmates is really what we feel is important too do you find that do you find that they're willing to engage in that kind of discussion or about sense of belonging yeah I mean I mean are they are they coming in with or are they kind of or do you have to tease it out we use those words you don't say like do you feel like you belong so at the at the end of maybe because we change well use CH we change every unit we change their seating and so some of the questions would be like especially after a lab-based unit what was something that your partner did really well and so they will write something down and so then automatically that person's like oh I did something great like and now all of a sudden they were like I was a part of that group like they really needed me and so those are the types of things that we do to bring up that self-confidence and then things like knowing each other's names so names are a big thing for students to feel a sense of belonging so those are different things that we do or even some of the um when we do when we hit November each day has a different theme about being thankful and they talk about it and then there'll be different experiences that students have so it's not always the science that brings it out it's making them establish relationships and in those relationships will make the student feel like they belong and if I'm not mistaken Lori just that sense of belonging score is actually made up of like four or five different questions six different questions yeah we can forward those to your Creations it's fascinating to see it but it's all nationally normed also so that the data is Fairly reliable correct that's at that I was going to add the same piece just that that was the question we chose just for the sake of Simplicity but that the questions the students answer targets it from multiple areas of belonging so that that percentage really becomes a summative value not just an individual question value not a single yeah can you see it throughout you know you you there's clearly a big jump from Fall to Spring do you sort of see it happening as it's good as the semester goes on that yeah go ahead sorry I think the cohesiveness of the class yeah exactly what Deanna was talking about that's a you know we want that sense of belonging where they're comfortable with each other and yeah I think the the frequent changing of seats creates that just because then they get to know more people in class faster I think it's also the idea that like our team is our room not our team is our table and so as they get to change and work with everyone like oh we're all in this together it's not just like me and this other person I'm sitting with well thank you team that was really amazing great job [Applause] we appreciate you thank you and yet government is still sticking around yeah those are amazing [Laughter] all right uh next item is uh approval of our curriculum change proposals and as we had shared uh previously tonight we're bringing forward a recommendation for curriculum change proposals for the 23-24 school year uh you may recall that in the spring uh we presented all of these to you as letters of intent and then over the summer uh Mark and Troy lead out conversations at the admin Team level and we bring back to you final curriculum change proposals uh for 23 24 school year which generally we typically bring to you in September we brought them forward to you in October we were running just a couple days behind and couldn't quite squeeze it in so tonight we're bringing them forward to your review and approval oh can I have a motion to approve the sorry I have a motion to approve the course the curriculum proposal so moved second oh I can't switch it and then Troy do you wanna you or Mark want to just give a quick uh maybe overview of kind of where we're at and then if the board has any questions uh with the applied Arts uh division um we're looking at replacing a course that's presently being offered Child Development and pitching it as human growth and development to expand um developmental stages from prenatal to all the way through adolescence whereas before it was created with six years old we're dropping media Art and Design due to under enrollment and we're incorporating a new class in computer science engineering and Technology thanks to Wendy and her team and now Jackie King to focus in on virtual reality and augmented reality which is going to be pretty exciting already in a lot of our courses we're using some virtual reality but this is the actual like understanding of a draw of reality and moving forward that's pretty cool um due to some resequencing in our math program and a number of you weren't here I think middle last year we switched the mathseek lens from Algebra 1 then now to Geometry then Algebra 2 and that's going to lead to a Cascade of changes as students grow up throughout the curriculum the name changes in prerequisites and that's pretty much Maps out there and then an interesting you might actually remember from a couple of years ago that we did that work with the theater schools and so some of the fewer schools they teach algebra one now they will teach geometry they used to teach algebra two um but we think getting Algebra 2 later in a kid's career closer to the SAT is a smarter idea so all the feeder schools they've already made these changes a couple of years ago but now those kids are moving up to us and so we're slowly working through the changes really in a way to rethink like our freshman year experience like how do we make sure that the kids are having that great positive experience when they first show up so just to be clear the changes that the board is seeing and right now in front of us these are changes that for the most part we've already discussed last year um that we're bringing for actually two years two years ago we're bringing forward now because it's going to have an impact on next year's course book as the kids move up to the middle school I also know that we we shared that we were considering some other changes to math and science but we're not quite ready to bring those forward yet so we're gonna we put those on pause um and none of those are reflected in this document yet maybe in the future but well that's a whole nother conversation so Mark and then and then with World languages we are changing the division name from World languages to multilingual learning division um if this is aligned to the Illinois State Board of Education so we want to stay alignment with that and that's been there's a lot of discussion at the state level but we do want to align ourselves to that and then we were able to work with our French through accelerating credit with Loyola University and offer participate with credit which is pretty exciting so most all of our world languages now will have some form of dual credit um late in the students experience and then there is a title change just to a American literature to World contemporary literature in the El classes so that's the last uh any other questions but and then just as a reminder um as soon as the board approves the course proposal is essentially what happens is they get um filtered through um Jamie's Division and communicate in Communications we print out course books and within the next couple days um parents of incoming freshmen are going to start talking about um or actually freshman parents are going to start talking about you know your future and it's course selection starts essentially yeah essentially we start rolling so there's there's a two second plug on Wednesday is a no homework and on that night we're hoping to get families to have conversations about what courses are next uh as they move forward so we built you lots of conversations for the dinner table for Wednesday so to math are part of a longer process and longer conversation I'm wondering if you anticipate anything like that across other divisions just with regards to either where students are coming in from our feeders or changes to the field that you might see reflected at the curricular level yeah people are having a lot of conversations right now in science which is an interesting place to consider um and it's really trying to think that through like what's best for students um as they're coming in freshman year and then throughout and then really considering students skills as they're entering even into our English program you know um where they're at as a freshman what it means to be 14 taking freshmen or what does it mean to be skillfully developed and where we might be able to bring students along and meet them where they're at to find the supports necessary to offer any interventions for students so we're balancing off a lot of those conversations right now and thinking about that in the future those are all really good considerations but require a lot of thought yeah it's important our our Peter districts do a fabulous job of preparing kids and as the are the courses that we've built over time are they still the right courses and we move past that a little bit the kids are you know in like in math for instance many kids are taking two years of high school level math in middle school right so what does what does that mean for the other divisions and it's just a it's a really interesting question and it's really because of the great work that happens in the feeder districts they've already with just the different ways our Center districts prepare students in Spanish for instance you know and that requiring a different way again being from where they're at then facility of their experience moving forward [Music] yes no I am Joseph hi so hi gorson hi entire hi motion carries okay and then you'll see a number of personnel items that are part of the human resources report and um that brings us to the approval of student fees Mr Carney yep um sorry uh every you'll have to forgive my voice I'm going a little hoarse um every year we bring before the board um the uh suggested fees for various um uh really events that go on our campus normally just the the basic School fee but one of the other school fees or ancillary fees that we need to review um kind of by itself because it always comes earlier than expected is the summer school fee and so um tonight what we are presenting to you is the look at the student fees that were project acting for next year it's not finalized but the one fee that we are looking for action on tonight is the summer school fee um and that would be the for the summer of 2023.

here Nancy kapka here Luca plauskas here and Caitlin Vincent here we have Quorum with stand for the pledge thank you to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands one nation under God indivisible with liberty and justice for all okay student perspectives all right uh first we're gonna invite Jerry Ford here I figured that was my time to stand up uh so hello everyone on July 22nd Downers Grove South hosted the first ever District 99 jazz Camp over 40 student musicians from both North and South High School as well as neighboring District 58 came together for a week of celebrating the history culture and discipline of jazz America's classical music world we're not Educators and performers including the great Ron Carter took part in this special week-long experience for our d-99 student musicians and it culminated in a community performance at the official Park Band Shell so here to present on that topic are Becca snowfer and Annie White welcome I'm Annie white um and I'm Becca snoffer the first time it happened I had a year or so I'm super sad that it was my last year but I'm also so glad that I got to experience it I um tell me when to advance I'm the clicker so um my favorite part about jazz Camp was that it was both North and South students um we've had jazz concerts together and like in the same spaces but we've never really gotten to work side by side with them so I think that was really important to kind of bring together The District 99 family so uh throughout the week we had a big emphasis on learning the history and culture of jazz we started out each day by dancing and kind of grooving together so that we could like Feel the beat and it just it sort of held my understanding of jazz as a whole and it was just really great to know uh different stepping stones that are in jazz pieces and learn about how Jazz today came to be yeah um and then another really cool thing that was all Mr Lowry's doing is he has some really great connections in the Jazz world including um Kevin schoenbach who is a teacher around the area and then Professor Ron Carter who is an NIU professor of jazz and we've worked with him before in clinics for concerts and such and it's just a really valuable experience to talk to um other experienced performers in the area uh someone else we got the pleasure to meet was Leonard Simpson he is actually one of the top five alto saxophone players in the world which as an alto saxophone player was crazy to kind of be in his presence and learn about him um so we actually got to spend a lunch with him and just ask him questions and he told us about his journeys and um what it's taken him to get to where he is and it just it was like it was crazy it was an amazing experience that I truly will never forget um but like throughout this Jazz camp like Becca was saying we got to meet so many great people which I think made it so cool to see different people that aren't just within our district and then our final performance was really cool it was outside and it was a beautiful day with a bit of rain that overpassed once we start started playing and it was really cool to play at the official Park show because it's downtown downers so it's kind of like common ground in public so a ton of people came and just got to sit on the grass and it wasn't as formal we all got to hang out and talk and it was just a really cool experience to play like that and yeah that's it [Applause] will you play alto sax what do you play um I play tenor sax in clarinet very cool and our our both are either of you going to continue on with your music or over excellent or the other any other questions well thank you thank you great presentation [Applause] foreign on Friday September 16th the Mustangs hosted our homecoming football game versus Willowbrook High School it was the most attended football game of the year and 11 student leaders chose to stay after the game ended and they helped our CMG staff clean up the entire Stadium we'd like to recognize them for demonstrating the Mustang way and ask them to share why they chose to help our CMG staff so as presenting will be Lindsey Bourne and Nick Koch hi I'm Lindsay Bourne I'm Nick uh so yeah like Mr Lawry said we had our big homecoming football game against any uh sporting event after the game there's a lot a lot of stuff left behind I'm sure some of us in this room I know I'm guilty of it myself but maybe just leaving something somewhere not thinking about it so what we decided is we were going to help our CMG staff like clean that up after the game so that they didn't have as much to worry about so like he said I think we did it the first week again so Glenmark West and it was only a couple of us and then we just kept doing it we did it against Willowbrook and we did it against uh Addison Trail and every time people more and more people started to join in so I think that's just like a big example of how being a positive role model can help like lead others by example yeah and we're both members of the ggs super fans club and also student section leaders and it's our job to kind of create a positive game day experience for everyone involved so we're going to continue to do this like even after football season I think we only have one more home game but also with like basketball season and volleyball season just by helping to clean up because when all of us do it it's really not that big of a deal um compared to having only a few staff up out thank you thank you thanks for setting a great example you've done this uh three weeks in a row I think yeah so did um did you notice any sort of decrease in the amount of stuff you had to pick up not yet okay yeah yeah well hopefully I mean people's you know other students see you working at this and and you know you're less likely to leave something behind when you you know you're conscious of it and it's yours it's your space right I mean it's you know so taking ownership of it is really cool so thank you yeah right keeping good care of them right so well done yeah did you guys organize it or did people just like organically come down to help you um I think it just started off by some people seeing trash and picking it up and then as the games went on more people decided to stay back so I think it's become like a more normalized thing just for everyone to pick up their own trash after they cool yeah well thank you for saying thank you [Applause] student board members nope nope uh first Grove Express sorry I'm sorry I looked I went down the line by Don and Nicole Ford sorry for the Slate good evening members of the board other District Personnel that are here tonight it is with pleasure that I present to you the inaugural Grove Express Foundation Junior board I'm going to tell you something that you probably already know which is that District 99 students are the best of the best it is with this in mind that we wanted to create an opportunity for students who are direct recipients of some of the funds raised at the Grove Express Foundation Thanksgiving Day race give them the opportunity to be in a leadership position and continue to hone in on their leadership skills and also gain experiences with our organization that they can carry on post High School the group that you see before me were six of 13 applicants who had to go through an application and interview process we did not intend for this board to be girl power but here we are they are an amazing group of young women and it has been such a pleasure to work with them and beside them I'm going to let them introduce themselves to you and then tell you a little bit about what they have been doing with our organization thus far I'd first like to thank for being here today and taking time out of your night my name is Sarah Ryan my name is we are members of the sponsorship committee for the Grove Express um so far we've been working on filling out a master spreadsheet to ensure that our organization's data is top-notch additionally we are hoping to gather many sponsors from past races as well as gain new sponsors for this year's race to ensure that we have enough Revenue to provide for any race Day activities that we have we know that as a donors Grove committee Community sorry as a Downers Grove Community we are very strong together and just being involved in activities such as the Grove Express 5K really brings us together as a community um along with the sponsorship committee I'm also a part of the merchandise committee so on behalf of the merchandise committee our goal is to be able to run an online storefront where um people can purchase a wide range of Grove Express branded apparel all merchandise sold from the web store would add to our overall profits which then is given back to the community um and touching back on the sponsorship committee we have to have as many people and local businesses involved as possible we encourage those able to support us and our mission by sponsoring to understand why not everyone has that same ability so um other ways to help raise awareness for our race are but not limited to placing suppliers around your place of work or just around the Downers Grove and also putting a yard sign in your yard we deeply appreciate any act or support that the assistant to Dental Group had to offer thank you all for your time and we I will see you all at the race all right hi my name is Madea kuzminskas I'm here at DJs and I'm part of the race Day committee um I have a friend that's not with me today that's also part of the race Day committee and that's the celebrities for us um basically Race Day committee is pretty straightforward we're in charge of anything involved with the actual race day of course it's in a future date so right now there's not really a definite thing that we can be like presenting and doing right now but we know that as race day comes we have multiple things that we're going to be working on like organizing volunteers and also communication between volunteers and other people along with that it's also make sure that the area that the race day is going to be happening is all safe and patrolled we're also going to be in charge of setting up and also closing down and also just clean up in general um any other things like we're not using papers and just answering any of the participants questions is also one of our priorities and of course just handling all the communications within race day and also just making sure that it all like goes smoothly and we're taking care of signage and everything like that so yeah all right hello my name is Addie Potter I'm Gina Lou and uh we are both on the pr and marketing committee for the Grove Express Foundation um in the in these committees we are marketing through social media uh through the high schools and through Downers Grove itself through the community Through small businesses Etc we will be on many social media sites such as Facebook and Instagram as well as on video announcements and other types of announcements throughout the high schools because marketing to the high school is not only not only just the community but marketing to the high schools is a great way to get volunteers and participants because high schoolers love to participate um we will also be sharing posters signs Etc and other ways to let students know to get involved as well as other members of the community and going on with the social media aspect we will be using things like hashtags or giveaways to kind of create a community for the Grove Express online um and another idea we have to incorporate through the high schools is having some sort of competition or um like events for students to get involved and encourage more participation such as having the schools sports teams compete with how many can get more participation in their members or having clubs volunteer on race day cool so as Addie touched on just then um as Junior board members for the Grove Express Foundation part of our responsibility is to raise awareness and involvement in our school community so Addie Gina and I are all students at Downers Grove North and we've come up with several ideas of how we will take action to encourage our peers to sign up for the race and volunteer opportunities to start we plan to advertise the Grove Express on our daily morning announcements as you all probably know these announcements are broadcasted daily every morning across the entire school and we also had an idea to have a feature in the weekly Brain Break videos these videos are pre-recorded and share with students and staff via classroom monitors on block schedule days and we intend to direct and film a skit which will then be featured in the video uh we also plan to put up posters around dgn and online possibly through various DJ accounts from different sports clubs Etc or just the dgn account itself um the posters will have information for both volunteer and participants as well as information and how to sign up uh they will be posted around the school and be advertised throughout different act activities at dgn I also wanted a physical if it's volunteer so we're going to set up a very easily accessible area for students to find more information and how to sign up all right since I'm a part of dgs and so is Sarah we have the DHS side of things and since the school are the schools are both under District 99 we're pretty much having the similar ideas right over here some of the differences we might have is that um we can contact Miss Martinez so we can ask her about any other options for advertising R we have TVs within the commons and everywhere else that we can always advertise slides on the um about the Grove Express race and we also just have more like School related social media and also social medias connecting to our sports teams we also thought that even getting sports teams to maybe be volunteering for the race might also help like cross country and stuff like that we obviously like probably dgn we also have volunteer clubs like Key Club Ace and other clubs like that so we'll definitely be contacting them as well um I myself am a part of the blueprint for South so I'll also be able to write an article and feature the race too so that'll help boost a little bit of publicity um also just like the social media page and just like stuff like that we think that as like a junior myself going to high school we have the added benefit of knowing our audience and so I feel like using social media as a Target and just announcing and advertising within the school would probably be the best and most effective way we can get either volunteers or participants we were also thinking now this is a very loose idea of course but we were thinking of maybe either doing a raffle or something like that for people who either sign up to volunteer or participate and that'll definitely boost people that want to sign up additionally some further ideas we have are to make a little friendly rivalry between our friends at dgn and dgs just to get participation going and as always we love a good competition between the schools thanks any questions I don't have a question but I can tell you that at North the girls swim team is already coming together as a group to participate that day so maybe you wanna look at them thank you yeah so I wonder if there's a way to create a friendly rivalry between O'Neill and Herrick in a similar sort of fashion get some of those students involved as well right that's a great idea we actually haven't thought about that yet but that's definitely a Target like age group that we want involved in the race so we'll definitely work on that too thank you absolutely because they're going to be together that's right don't forget Jefferson as well any questions if somebody if somebody in the community wanted to put up a sign or make a contribution would they just go through the bond field site or I'm sorry yeah The Grove Express excuse me I stand corrected twice now it's only we've only been here to 15 minutes website or Is there going to be one on our website or does it be on the growth it'll be on the growth Express okay um so yes through the website there are volunteer opportunities and there's a way of communicating with us and asking for yard signs we'll be doing social media campaign as well uh to get individuals signed up for those who want to provide yard signs throughout the community and if I can just provide a Shameless plug uh hi I'm Don Runner I'm president of the Grove Express Foundation we took over the bond field last year um and this year we formed a 501c3 organization it was originally the organization that came together from rotary from the 58 foundation and Roadrunner soccer club in Downers Grove which I'm a part of but it was so successful last year and we all got along really well that we decided to form a new 501c3 and last year think about it one day one race we raised almost a hundred and twenty thousand dollars wow that's it's like 45 minutes [Applause] uh rotary gave uh close to forty thousand dollars in scholarships to d99 students and roadrunners gave another thirteen thousand dollars to t99 and I worked with Scott Lou Geiser closely to get specific needs addressed at t99 so we're really proud of what we did last year we're going to blow them out of the water this year performance wise so we're really happy I'm going to leave a couple of these posters here behind with Hank um and uh go ahead and visit groveexpress.com you'll sign up and register and uh that's my Shameless plug but hopefully we'll see all of you out on race day on Thanksgiving day thanks for having us a quick question well you mentioned that did I get it right that you brought all the groups together to form the 501c3 okay yes that's right okay that's awesome all right pretty great all right thank you thank you for your support last year [Applause] all right now rock paper scissors okay so I'll start off so the last meeting um I gave a report on was homecoming week so I just wanted to touch a little bit about how homecoming week went we had a really awesome week with lots of activities we had Joe Diamond during like one of our resource which he was really cool to watch we had a really good um homecoming assembly just watching different performances from our cheer team and dance team as well as like individual students who got the opportunity to perform in front of the in the in front of the school which was a really like unifying moment just celebrating being a Mustang our homecoming dance was really fun it was again out on the turf so it provided students a lot of space they didn't necessarily want to be in the middle of the mosh pit they could also there was also arcade games and a photo booth so a lot of different things for students and it was a really fun night um looking forward we've kind of again just settled into a Groove with access and resource periods we now know where we're supposed to be when we're supposed to be we just had our first week of student autonomy day so we could go anywhere that we wanted in the school and that was really nice just to have that individual freedom to use the time however you want personally I was in the comments with my friends but I know a lot of people went to the library and got some studying or homework done so it was just nice to have that time to yourself and do whatever you uh thought it would be best for you to do in that time resource also changed so that there are programs available during it but you're not necessarily forced to attend them so it's nice to know that if you do need these programs that you have access to them during a specific time but if you don't need to listen to the presentations then you can just do other work which is nice again to have that choice of how you're going to spend your time um our principal student advisory Council they I'm not personally on it but my brother is and so he was telling me about it and they noticed that trash in the Commons was a big issue in our school but they um fixed that by putting Little posters on the table like clean up your space and adding additional garbage cans and they said that the trash has gone down a lot so just having student involvement and fixing an issue and keeping good care of our our Commons because they're great and we also kept the cannon we versed our Rivals Hinsdale South and we won and kept the cannon which was a really good school spirit moment for South that's a big game and uh just one thing that that students and teachers have kind of had problems with lately is just our Wi-Fi issues I know that this last week we had it shut down for a few days to try and fix the issue so we appreciate the effort in going into fixing it it just sometimes is a little aggravating for teachers and students when our Chromebooks aren't working or smart board problems so just looking forward figuring out that problem would make learning and teaching I'm sure a lot easier so we're excited we have Red Ribbon Week coming up uh with drug and alcohol-free lifestyle presentations so we're excited for that and looking forward to our last home game this week which is pink out so it'll be it'll be a good time um so there were definitely a lot of positives in the last three or so weeks and once again starting off like Caitlyn with homecoming because that's what was the whole gist of the last report we had given um there was a large amount of students that came out this year I know that after covet it was difficult for students to believe that it would be okay to be in a crowd um so big and maybe with the heat and everything going around but this year it was amazing because once again we were outside on the turf and it was a great it was a great area and the amazing students and staff helped us decorate for our theme under the stars and it was definitely it was definitely a sight to see Not only was it beautiful but the weather was perfect up until the end when it started to drizzle but up until then it was amazing because the fireworks show worked out and overall it was amazing and the school also provided LED sticks for every student in the um school who was there so it was also a great way to get all the students involved during the dance and just be able to enjoy themselves and be able to hang out with their friends and then also with another activity last Friday was our last home game for football and that's sad because obviously I'm a senior but the weather was not so great it was pouring and it was very cold but we still had a great win against oprf and there was a large amount of students who came even with the weather which shows just how much school spirit we all have and how much we all want to support our team and come out and cheer no matter the circumstances and we had the band the cheerleaders in Athena's we had all the performances it was amazing we all came together and we were able to shout and it was just a wonderful sight also and then what's going on in the school is that we continue to spread our school spirit because that's what we're all about and we keep wearing our all-in shirts which is what we keep showing to the community as to who we are and what we believe in and also last week following Red Ribbon Week we do an annual no one walks alone so different groups different clubs clubs from Sports came out and walked just to show their support for Red Ribbon Week and then also Degen is very into embodying the sense of leadership into students and taking action in the school and by doing greater cause we're able to show what each student is able to achieve during our school year and also by school school spirit we've also done a daily happy birthday slide so on the announcements we're able to recognize every student no matter if they like their birthday or not but we say happy birthday to them and so teachers and their peers are able to say happy birthday and make them cheer up in a sense so in all Downers Grove North is developing a positive environment and is trying to include all their students it's going to be amazing to see the growth that we have in a few months thank you thank you any questions for student board members those Wi-Fi problems getting better yeah oh yeah yeah we had a whole team of experts in and then it was a couple of access uh like two weeks ago at the access periods where things got really rough and then we brought in a whole bunch of consultants and then we had another access with the same type of activity and it seems to have been corrected good yeah thank you that's it for the fun stuff yeah yeah and on that note we need a motion for the Board of Education to approve the minutes of the September 19 2022 business meeting and the September 19th 2022 closed meeting second Terry and Mike thank you thank you Terry pavisage aye aye Mike Davenport aye Christopher Espinoza aye Terrell Fuller aye Jenny hagstrom aye Joanna Vazquez extracurricular expenditures that you received in your packets last week I moved to prove that minutes and the claims payroll and extracurricular expenditures so we have a motion by Dr Medlin and the second by Mr Marshall any discussion all in favor aye motion passes thank you there are no public comments regarding action items so we'll move right into our official School Board business topics regular agenda agenda Dr Rocco okay our first item is to recognize some outstanding academics from the high school and Mr Stanish from the high school administration is here to talk us through that celebration Joe foreign all right thank you School Board um I'm here to present uh these three students that qualified as National Merit semi-finalists by scoring in the top half of one percent of all Juniors nationally who took the PSAT nms QT Lake Central is extremely proud of these individuals who have earned that National recognition and we wish them well as they move forward into the National Merit Scholarship program they are Kevin Ara [Applause] Maria gorgievsky [Applause] and Braden Whitney good job congratulations to all of our students thank you guys [Applause] foreign next up we have Mr delater from pifer elementary he's going to talk to us about an outstanding award the corporation received for supporting Riley's Children Hospital [Applause] thank you for allowing me to be here this evening members of the board and esteemed colleagues of its central office here on behalf of the Indiana Association of school principals and Riley Hospital I have some really heartwarming news for us this evening regarding all of our Lake Central Schools each year the iasp organization asks all of Indiana schools to join with them and combine fundraising forces to raise a minimum of one dollar per student to help with children that are have are getting help from Riley Hospital and in raising one dollar per student each school can earn a distinction of being a red wagon school and if each School within a corporation earns that status then the school corporation itself becomes a red racket red that's hard to say Red Wagon Corporation and I don't know if you're familiar with Riley Hospital at all the symbol that's on license plates and things like that the red wagon is very prominent as a symbol at Riley Hospital because those take the place of gurneys for Pediatric patients and they have wagons that they pull through the hallways and have the ivy poles on the back of them and it's just heartwarming and heartbreaking all at the same time and for the 2021-2022 school year there were only eight Red Wagon corporations throughout the entire state uh there were four in the northern region and four in the central region I didn't say anything in this southern region region for purpose and I'm not going to knock anybody down in South but um but I want to let you know that Lake Central alone stands in Lake and all of our surrounding counties as a red wagon Corporation for the state so Dr barato Dr Morocco if you'd like to come down and accept this on behalf of Indiana Association of school principals and Riley Hospital and kids caring and sharing you can hang this prominently in central office here [Applause] and I will add for the record this will be our sixth plaque on the wall so thank you Lake Central [Music] [Applause] and I I do want to add a couple other statistics just I know Lake County sometimes gets a bad rap for things but based on uh 20 2020 2021 data numbers Lake County unique visits which means that every time a patient goes to Riley Hospital it doesn't matter how many times they go afterwards but they count them as a unique visit that's them as an entity um the numbers for Lake County visits to Riley Hospital equal 4 320 patients that are seen from just Lake County in Riley Hospital and it is the highest number of unique patient visits to Riley in all of the northern region whether it's Northwest North you know up in central or whatever but we're the highest number of we have the highest number of patients that go and visit Riley Hospital so keep those dollars coming when your schools have their fundraisers and we'll make sure that money gets approved and delivered appropriately so thank you again thank you friends oh okay next on our agenda is another update from Mr Stanish and that is regarding the Veterans Day celebration coming up soon all right thank you Dr Morocco and our Lake Central School Board for this opportunity to share with you uh everyone today here in attendance also about our Veterans Day ceremony that will be that will be taking place on Thursday November 10th Mrs Skyler and the history Club Mr Pruitt in the interact club and our veterans day planning committee have been working since early September on this incredible event and our goal is to show appreciation to our veterans both past and present I have Mr Tom Clark here with me today recent recently retired social studies teacher here from Lake Central High School a veteran himself he is also part of our planning committee we take a lot of pride in what we do here this ceremony is a huge part of what makes Lake Central in the Lake Central School Corporation an incredible place to be we'd like to share a few things with the school board and everyone in attendance about what is going to be going on during our assembly I brought a few copies of the invitations for you guys to kind of take a look at if you like to pass those around as well thank you Mr Pruitt actually made that with the interact Club so he gets all the credit with that he did a fantastic job um we'll be providing a hot breakfast for all our veterans who are in attendance and their families from 7 30 in the morning until 8 45.

okay Canada here Gladys Cooper here Lauren Daly you think she told me she could not be here Bridget gurton is here Julie here Ralph not here Albert is here and Louisa here okay great um I did not see an updated agenda item um I mean an updated agenda uh can someone confirm there was that was there was just a change of items There's No Agenda itself it's just okay um a suggestion to take the executive session discussion of the contract you're going to ratify and putting it at the end of the meeting along with the vote so that any public won't have to wait while you do that okay sounds good so with that I will give the floor to uh Mr Walston thank you thank you um and good evening everyone and thank you for taking the time to join us this evening um I understand I know number one we just had a subcommittee meeting finance committee meeting Mr Russo thank you but I also understand we we had board members in a working in a different capacity the Miss trucia so I just want to thank everyone uh for their work this thing um so we are when I say we talk about the cabinet I think also I think you're going to learn quickly uh there was significant Community feedback and involvement in our survey that we push out to the community so I'm excited to kind of share those results as well um for the board members who have been on serving for a couple of years now um they will tell you that we started this work these discussions uh prior to the pandemic and with the pandemic approaching this certainly was no longer a priority uh certainly the action steps and the priorities are still important to us um but the the activity of walking you through um the plan uh was not as important given the um given given the realities of the pandemic uh with all of that said uh we have um our strategic plan um our roadmap roadmap to achieve it uh that we want to review with review with you this evening as part of the presentation um I'm asking I think it will be most efficient if we save the questions for the end um I believe Mike has set up a Google doc um and Mike if you can also take that document and put it in the chat for the board members so they don't have to go fishing for it and then the team and I and the team and I we're all represented on this call can Circle back at the end and answer any questions that you might have uh previously I also want to state that the plan that we will be sharing with you this evening are the same goals that were that was shared previously it's just in a different format this evening different colors and you'll you'll you'll see that momentarily just wanted to make it consistent with some of the recruitment materials and some of the colors that you may have seen displayed at our kickoff to to begin the Year this year so it's just kind of more colorful more engaging and frankly just kind of more consistent uh what we're trying to do um so what I would like to do is re revisit the vision and Mission with the board with the community and excerpt from the equity and diversity policy and a reminder of our portrait of The Graduate just in terms of its our Focus as a district and then walk in and then take an opportunity to kind of walk you through the survey results feedback um and I think you're going to be pleasantly surprised at feedback from our community um in in terms of Engagement that we got from them I've endeavored to to to make sure that we've had a community plan um and so regardless of how the seats change how the faces change in the cabinet or and or the board um it was important to me that we have a plan that the community is going to embrace and I think we have some evidence between the last number processes now given the feedback for our vision and Mission giving it feedback and work from the board on the equity statement and the the community engagement on the parts of the graduate I think you're going to find um in many ways that this plan is can consistent with all of that work to help realize the vision and mission of the school district so without any further delay Mike I'm going to ask if you can share your screen yep one second [Music] foreign there we go oh great thank you I'll just give everyone a minute to adjust their screens but again um our strategic plan five year plan with um the way the plan will be laid out you will see our six um goals as a district with strategies to help realize those goals and then action steps to help realize those strategies as a as a process throughout the plan um the microwave to the next page and so the vision and Mission um through our work with getting feedback from Community parents students staff during the 18 during the 1920s school year we revised our vision statement to read Danbury public schools aspires to advance all Learners to The Highest Potential and we do that in partnership with families in a community and provide while providing transformation learning experiences designed to nurture thoughtful and prepared graduates Mike at the end of 2019 we approved a policy this board also Revisited this policy I began I believe that um at the beginning of this year or sometime before the end of last year reviewed the policy um and this board also felt comfortable with the language uh in the in in the policy this is uh simply an excerpt from that policy but we feel strongly this helps us realize our vision and Mission as well like and then here are the six priorities of our district Vision teaching and learning staff development Talent acquisition to school climate meaningful collaboration and resource allocation and I think teaching and learning is obvious just in terms of what that means staff development is about investing in trying to support the growth and development of our teachers administrators and staff Talent acquisition is another title for human resources and and recruitment of Staff School climate is about a number of things but it's about making sure kids feel good about coming to school families feel welcome when they come to school and students also feel that they're safe in our buildings meaningful collaboration for us and again I just want to the quick definition of these terms it's important that you you know these things as we move forward is really about family community engagement for us those are the the big areas that we'll be covering but it's also about uh means meaning making sure that we engage our staff in meaningful ways to make sure they continue to be connected to the district while we also look to do that with students and families as well but our big investment certainly has been families um and and staff last but not least a resource allocation um we critical for us not only resources allocation about how we support schools in differentiate resources to schools that need the most but with that also there are strategies in there around working with our city to to try to leverage um resources for the school district while also trying to seek additional funds whether that's through Federal funding State funding or local funding Mike and so Community survey and we had I believe we had this survey available for two weeks we asked for feedback on every individual every individual strategy that I had just reviewed with you and so you will see feedback from every area and as we go through the next couple of slides I'm ready Mike okay so in total we had 683 respondents um this is uh pretty typical of the type of respondents uh we received previously when we had um our uh initial kind of approvement of the direction of the Strategic plan A couple of years ago so three percent of the responders identified as community members 83 percent over 83 identified as parents of family members uh close to seven percent for students and close to seven percent for DPS staff Mike so teaching and learning and so the way um the scale was broken down it was strongly agree or agree neither agree or disagree disagree or strongly disagree and the blue represents a gray um the kind of yellow light yellow uh represents agree or disagree neither disagree or disagree the lighter yellow um I guess we call that beige almost is disagree and strongly disagree is the kind of can you point to the strongly disagree Mike the color thank you and so in the blue you'll see um of our three um three strategies to help help us Implement our goals it's Implement and sustain pre-k through 12 instructional programs that realize the characteristics of the pog strengthen and make curriculum accessible for all students and include enrichment interventions increased opportunities improve the quality of service for all students and overwhelmingly we have families of staff and students are proven in the affirmative Mike and then you'll see similar numbers although a little less open staff development but we across the board we are getting feedback in the 70s and I think you're going to see something consistent throughout when looking at the responders Mike similarly with Talent acquisition and this one is a little lower so I'll make sure I take an opportunity to reach read this one enhance teaching administrative recruitment to promote a broader pool of culturally responsive and diverse applicants and so you'll see we had close to 70 percent of our responders there agreed um deep in the sense of community in which Staff feel valued and respected a little over 80 percent and then enhanced structures that celebrate widely to deep and diverse contributions of our staff and inspire a rich School climate and this is a little over 75 percent at 76.7 Mike and then School climate and this is again just going back to addressing those social emotional goals um that you've heard us talk about often uh promote social emotional learning opportunities for all students throughout the day um 80 agreed promote and enhance programs that create safe schools over 80 percent and further develop our infrastructure to support resources and promote positive School culture and restorative practices throughout all schools and again we are close to 80 percent meaningful collaboration again one of those Investments that we have made in these last couple of years I work collaboratively with schools businesses and Community to strengthen meaningful engagement through joint decision making this is very important work uh certainly for Danbury Career Academy work a little over 70 percent build and enhance the capacity of families and Educators to support student learning a lot of these things have started through our Parent Academy parent University programming at 82 percent and develop effective methods of communication with parents staff and students and certainly um I I think the board probably calls some of the strategies we have taken and you're going to see some of those things reflected on in our plan uh with parent square and our website last but not least resource allocation continue needs and now continue needs analysis with the purpose of finding efficiencies that will improve the quality of services um and develop advocacy and partnership to leverage the voice of school leadership elected officials and Community stakeholders and this begins to specifically talk about some of those strategies that we're hoping will will yield some positive results for us and then last but not least deep in Partnerships with City officials to plan for program facility expansion in the face of expiry relief funding um and of course we are finding ourselves right there right now with the financial cliff right ahead of us and so getting back to the PowerPoint itself um just kind of want to walk you through some of the folks who will be speaking this evening and then again all of us will be available at the end of the presentation I might also encourage you if you have any questions please feel free to go to the link maybe add your questions in there it'll be a nice way for us to capture all of the questions at the end and make sure we answer everyone fully um and so uh Dr Cass I'm sorry go back Mike and so Dr casimiro is going to take us to the first two slides teaching and learning and staff development Kim Thompson is going to take us through Talent acquisition given her her portfolio and um Human Resources um Kelly tricious also she has a major responsibility in teaching and learning and staff development but for this evening she's going to cover uh School climate for us meaningful collaboration will be handled by Dr selig and resource allocation will be handled by uh John Stang um so Mike we're ready for the next one [Music] good evening everyone I apologize in advance if I have a little bit of a coughing fit uh it comes it comes and goes so I'm gonna do my best I have my cup of hot tea ready here uh in Waiting um so um most of you have already seen the the slides in the Strategic plan in the form of the um the broader goals um and so really some of the the things I'll outline tonight is what's kind of happening in the action steps so how do you take a strategic plan and break it down into uh chunks uh in order to achieve its intended outcomes and so as you know the first um the teaching and learning slide is a pretty weighty one how do we provide Equitable learning environments and experiences that are rigorous inclusive and culturally responsive that prepare learners for post-secondary Success um maybe a little bit later on we'll go through and talk a little bit about what that inclusive and culturally responsive actually means in the context of of academic settings and in the context of learning um because I think that um you know maybe identifying some definitions and clearing some misconceptions about that will be helpful for appreciating um how those terms are used throughout the entire presentation as well as in our own Equity policy that we've already adopted um so we can certainly Circle back to that and answer some questions but hopefully uh through the course of the presentation we'll be able to address some of that um so one of the biggest responsibilities in the school district is to make sure that we have a robust teaching and learning uh program and that our teachers are ready to teach that program so obviously our main goals and these are pretty common goals that we will Implement and sustain a rigorous program that realizes the portrait of The Graduate obviously the portion of the graduate is something that we've Incorporated that has been new um teachers in profession in our administrators are working diligently to understand our rubrics and to make sure that we're learning how to effectively weave in our portrait of The Graduate practices into our curriculum and into our lessons so that we're giving students practice practice and access with the things that we expect of them upon graduation um strengthening and make our curriculum accessible for all and basically that means making sure that all of our students have the same level of access and we do that in the form of creating supports in the Universal Design of what we do and increasing um interventions and improving academic outcomes there's no secret that we have a long way to go uh some of the setbacks of the academically with the as a result of the pandemic um something we'll be focusing on uh with this group in particular right now but for probably the next 10 years as we support um our students as they move through our school system so working on building up our resources for that which in years past we haven't had many the uh silver lining of the pandemic is that we were able to utilize a lot of the funding to purchase resources that we've never had before in the district so we're spending a lot of time rolling that out and teaching our teachers how to use those and then the last one is increasing opportunities to improve the quality of services for all students to be College and Career ready I think the academy is a testament in the development and action plan behind that work is a testament to the commitment that we're making in the College and Career area and so the action steps around these these areas are how to execute on these and so as you know this is a multi-year plan uh this is not a one and done there's a lot of work involved in some of that work May shift over time and will adjust over time but generally um in terms of the action steps and accessing the curriculum we are redesigning services to support our English language Learners so um our second language Learners uh their instruction their tier one instruction their core instruction is really about building um building language acquisition skills and so we've implemented some programs there we're going to continue to roll that out and Report out on that over the course of the next couple of years Implement and a comprehensive assessment system this is extremely important for us in order to get pinpoint where our students needs are it was important for us to build and robot and invest in a robust assessment system so we're learning about that new assessment system and we're working with our teachers and administrators to get them to understand how to utilize that and we'll be reporting out on that and the same is true the pattern will fall through with all of these we'll be reporting out on the various stages of implementation and rollout over time we'll be working on our curriculum and resources to support implementation that are both inclusive and culturally relevant Danbury is one of the most diverse cities in the state both socioeconomically and linguistically and we have an obligation to support all of our Learners not always does that include just it's not just about language per se but it's really about understanding our students as students who they are where they come from and understanding how to leverage those experiences to increase engagement one of the the Hallmarks of culturally relevant teaching is really about um having being going Beyond teachers just knowing their content but they know their content they know their learner and they know how to teach that content to the learner it's good teaching practice to understand your students experiences and to make connections with them to build relationships there's a tremendous amount of research and Neuroscience research on the brain that when you build trusting relationships with your t with your students and they feel that they are understood and they're making connections based on their life experiences that achievement increases um and and their their engagement also increases as well so that's something that's time tested research based um and is in uh vast amounts of literature uh which is why you'll see those terms throughout our presentation here not just in our school district but just about every school district in the state so um very important for us to be working on our craft in those areas okay um Monitor and provide uh feedback for teacher and admin training we're continually working with our teachers as we've been rolling out our our phonics program at the elementary level so we'll be working on that we'll be creating uh more district and school-based teaming to engage instruction around and feedback Cycles so how are we doing with the work that we're that we're rolling out um what does it look like in a classroom and how can we improve our craft so we partner together to do that work um identify coordinate and Implement research-based interventions as you know just in the last couple of years we were able to add student support Specialists to our budget which is very important that helps with our tiered intervention and they are critical uh critical staff member in in our buildings to help students who are falling behind and are more than a few grade levels below their academic peers so we'll be looking to continue to support that create systems to evaluate current before and after school systems and and and make sure that we incorporate the feedback from our state holders and we'll be partnering with Ann Mead and her Center to make sure that what we're offering after school is relevant um and supportive of our students and our families and let's see here make sure I didn't skip one oh evaluating outcomes so one of the things that is going to be really important for us to do is as we shift into uh moving shifting literacy programs we could speak a little bit more about that in the curriculum committee is that it'll be important for us to assess how is this going is this working and what adjustments do we need to make so establishing a system to evaluate our own work and to push ourselves for a continual Improvement and then the last one is to develop support systems to ensure students graduate college and career ready with either a four or six year high school cohort and so um lots of things go in into improving a graduation rate um attacking things on the side of absenteeism making sure that our students know that we want them in school and that it's important that we're communicating that with our parents and the students themselves making sure that we students are on track for graduation and that we're able to provide the courses that they need and the time that they need them in order to do that and to make sure that if a student is a second language learner or student who's coming in who's perhaps maybe overaged and a bit undercredited that we find a way to help accelerate their learning so that we can get them in our six year cohort to make sure that we all of our Learners are graduating and are successful for post-secondary opportunities and I'm not sure do you want to do questions on a slide or do you want to come back at the end Mike do you want to go through the whole presentation the whole presentation camera oh okay I will do that okay I'm finding it very difficult to um go through this it's like on speed um the information being provided is it's such a fast rate that it's um I'm not finding it productive I just thought I would make that comment okay would you like me to slow down on the action steps or or honestly I the second slide that Kevin presented with the mention statement that was not read out loud and was approved you know I guess that's the first place that was some time ago and the information being provided now is like so fast that um it's it's it's a problem for me I don't know if anybody else is having the same issue I did want to make that comment right Michelle I don't know what you mean about the vision it's mission statement you didn't hear the vision and mission statement that I read uh I didn't hear you read the the second slide I believe it was I think you ran right past it and then went right to the breakout of of the different uh you know action steps or whatever it was that the graph it's just very fast there's no time to absorb the information it's it's it's almost at the speed that I'm speaking right now if y'all slowed down a little bit and to wait till the end which is what we've been doing all this time for many sessions um and then waiting after an hour of a presentation does not allow the individual to actually literally dig in and ask questions or remember what the content was I just needed to make that comment okay so I Rachel I don't know if you had something to say but I I can just sorry I I think that I'm pretty sure you read the vision and mission statement am I did I miss I I definitely read it uh okay well maybe later at the end we could go back and read it because I'm trying to listen Maybe you know I'm not feeling the best but right now the the speed in which we are going it's a lot of information um and you know I just I need to make that comment sure thanks thanks Michelle if if we could just I know Cara you're very passionate you know this in an inside and out but if you could just slow it down just a hair not a problem um we're having the presentation the the um the document is my internet okay my do you hear me okay okay the document you can type in questions as we are as the as the presentation is going on um it's in the chat yeah I get that okay the presentation is so fast that by the time I'm finishing writing the question we're on to a different section so if we can just slow everything down then I might be able to maybe just me do both and absorb the information thank you I could definitely do that and you know the trick with these is always being respectful to not read at folks um something that's already written uh and to find ways to you know help make the connections between those two things um and spend more times in areas where folks had questions which is um I think Dr selick sent the questions out in advance so I happy to slow down I definitely talk a little bit um fast when I get going with these things so um I I appreciate the feedback and I will slow down for the next slide okay thank you okay thank you okay so we'll go to the next next slide Mike thank you so this one uh centers on staff development um as you know it's extremely important uh in order for our students to be learning our teachers need to be um at the top of their game and that requires a tremendous amount of attention to how our teachers are developing uh as professionals and how we're supporting them as people in many cases um and so the overarching statement is and goals that we're going to develop and enhance the skills of our Educators and the competencies of all District staff so it's really not just teaching staff but how are our paraprofessionals supporting the teachers in the classroom are their skills up to date um how how how are secretary staff uh greets the families when you walk in the door and makes them feel welcome so part of that is are all part of what makes School culture and climate and are very important that we're constantly paying attention to those and we're making sure that our skills are up to speed in those areas again the idea of cultural responsiveness and reaching all Learners you'll see that it's a common theme throughout and again all that means is that we get to know our families really really well and we leverage uh what we know about them to help them grow and to help their children grow and that means that we're very thoughtful in our approach and that we're constantly working on building those relationships to understand um you know the diverse the diverse nature of of the needs of our families and our students um so the the three bulleted areas to the left um in there's a tremendous amount of research on the role of the principal in a school and so when we talk about um some high leverage strategies and efficacy of how things play out in a school we know that the role of the principal has one of the highest highest rates of of supporting student achievement in school and so in in turn we are focusing our energy on our principles this year uh in in a ways that maybe we haven't been able to to do that before part of the commitment with that is to be able to have uh our two new uh chief of schools to be working directly with principals to provide ongoing job and vetted support um and to work on data data Cycles with principles to help them dig into their data help them understand the Learners in their building and help them uh work together both on one-on-one but also as peers to develop strategies to move their schools to the next level and we've had some great successes in this area we've had some Blue Ribbon Schools and I can tell you um you know some of our PLC work that that had begun over the last couple of years has been instrumental in principles having light bulb moments um that that led to um strategies and methodologies to implement action plans to take their buildings to the next level so um improving the the the skill sets of our principles is extremely important um we strive to provide um very robust professional learning so we don't have a ton of days that's always seems to be an issue that there's never enough time to implement all the things that we want to implement here in Danbury in terms of being able to support with additional professional development where we want to do that but we do our best to balance out the needs of the system uh with the time that we have uh in in the form of professional development time and also after school meeting times so those are that's very important so we're constantly looking to provide that learning so we could build the capacity of our of our staff members um for continual Improvement and then the last one is about increasing collaboration with teachers and administrators uh through practice uh through the lens of equity and high expectations and so that goes again centering on who are Learners in the classrooms in front of us and what are their needs and is in our what is what we are teaching um is are they ready for that how do we raise expectations around our academics and how do we drive Improvement through really really deliberate practices so this is a really important one and so making sure that there's an open relationship between the teacher and the administrator and that they have time through data teams after school time and through PLC were

Julie Michael Kevin Michelle Coelho Kim Thompson and myself you know right uh our our quick meeting we're gonna quickly discuss our our current financial report what we've spent and what's from July until current July through September John is that correct yes Eddie uh John Eddie uh John who's gonna um I'll begin um Al good evening everyone I'm going to share this screen right now the agenda can everyone see that yes I have dual screen so I want to make sure it's on the right screen can you see it or no thumbs up yes yes yes okay so the first part of the agenda will be as Al mentioned July through September Financial reports and then the second piece um I'll turn it over to John to talk about the uh Danbury Career Academy school and Academy Staffing um is that good do I need to zoom in or is that perfectly fine let me zoom in that that's good thank you that's good thank you you're welcome um so we began the school year uh well underway we're about 33 34 days of uh School teaching as right as of right now um and enrollment has gone up as we all are aware um I have about 12 300 students across this District um and it's bringing a very uh even more tighter um budget than we expected especially at the high school um the staff at the high school enrollment would continue in program and course offering some existing staff are teaching additional courses which as you remember last year we used the word overloads these are teacher overloads um so this is basically a teacher like myself I have a prep period And you know I'm called into uh teach a courser to sub in either the teaching overloads right now um for the year we have uh We've budgeted about 272 thousand dollars that we think will um happen in teacher overloads the next piece is the transportation cost for the current high school program will also be higher than plan at eighty four thousand dollars um also more safety Advocates were being are being deployed or have been deployed across the district an additional eight safety Advocate positions were identified for which are a four of which including two at uh DHS so we were eight were requested um we have four that we put in the budget that we have in the budget and tour at the high school currently which is in a uh an additional unexpected expense of 220 dollars and the next line item is a really um during the summer there was a flooding here in Beaver Brook um so we had to uh deploy two departments here our HR department and Our IT department into temporary office space up the street at 43 Beaver Brook um while the repairs are being done here at uh 63 Beaver Brook um and then I'll jump into the following Pages um but are there any other questions as of right now I ask you have overloads what is the threshold what is uh Teresa what do you mean by the threshold when you say like how many days um uh why uh course so many students can be in a classroom you can be in a classroom we need more teachers more teachers is that what that means is that what that means no these are um overloads when uh correct you're you're right you're right um and um Kim if I could just chime in I know you're on there I think it's per Union contracts is it 26 or 28 students per class yeah it depends [Music] there is an awful Reverb s you guys can all mute um so what happens Teresa is as classes hit a particular size um and and you know at the high school it does it's it's in the 20s um and it varies by content and that kind of thing but as classes become so big that they cannot be staffed within teacher we create additional sections the problem is that um every teacher teaches five sections of something and so if we only need one new section or two new sections we don't need to hire a whole new teacher so what will happen is we will often run it as an overload and the teachers contract provides that um that overload can go to a volunteer um who volunteers to teach a sixth class and if there are no volunteers then we take the least Junior person in the department to go ahead and teach that overloaded class um it's hard because you're teaching a sixth class and the compensation for it is one seventh of your regular pay so um we often will get in situations where um you know if we have trouble finding stuff Staffing or if we just need one or two additional sections we get into an overload situation well that number 12 3 was we we had that at the beginning of the year what is the actual number now um the number is much higher I don't I'm that doesn't come out of my group but I'm wondering if somebody else on the call has seen the most recent student numbers I thought it was closer to fifth I thought it was closer this is but again I don't that comes out of it again that comes out of the the uh the enrollment number overall for the district or for this high school well uh I guess it's the district I guess it's the district the 12-3 is the district the amount of students we have in the district currently right so the high school I think the Temptation is to to divide that by the number of students and you get the ft's the problem is that at the high school you know you might need one Spanish class you might need one English class and you're not going to be able to use one FTE for that one full person um because that person teaches five sections so that's how we end up with an extra Spanish class and extra English class something like that and then there are occasions in the hard to fill areas like in Spanish where we may have to distribute five overloads because we can't find a one full Spanish teacher so it depends but it doesn't divide equally into the number of students because of the different content areas that you're talking about okay so how many more uh Danbury High School students that we got as of October 1st Teresa that's a number we can get um that comes from our uh data um department but um I can get that number for you for the committee thank you so any other questions I'm going to keep moving forward I know we're in a really tight schedule tonight um the next piece of next few um pages are basically the you know last year that this time we did a very similar um it was requested that we added the grant piece which was great so I added the grant piece into the uh grants and general fund summary report so up top if you can see uh it's the general funds report broken down by salaries benefits you know every other online item and very similar the same thing at the bottom for the grants um you know I'll touch base on the red because those are the questions that will come up um right now we have our um our numbers that are in a negatives in general funds which will we need a few months to change those in the salary there are some individuals that should be paid in Grants and some individuals in the grants that should be paid in the general fund so those are things that we will be transferring um throughout the next month or two and then the next line the purchase purchase Property Services that 58 000 is very similar just to transfers throughout the budget that we're doing on that need to be transferred and we'll you know John and myself and the team look at those um we really want to leave them there so we know where those numbers are coming from they're very similar to Prior years I know in the prior years they were left there and then that undesignated um line right there that 1.499 those were um the fiscal year 23 budget cuts that we had done those are for basically um the K through nine the nine uh I'm sorry the K through five nine sections um that we had to cut um before the school began and also it was the additional 945 000 which is we call it breakage so when someone leaves and we hire someone at a lesser rate that was that Savings of 945 000 so that's why that line is there that 1.4 uh nine nine line there's just showing that that cut from the budget which we know it's going into um one of our other grants second piece of the grants fund summary report at the bottom you're seeing the salaries at 6.7 million in the whole don't worry um that is because when we receive our letters from state and federal our award letters will um import them and then we'll add the the budget so right now we're seeing the expenditures in the encumbrance because people are getting paid things are being bought but once we receive the award letters from the state and the federal government we upload those budgets so those should be uploaded by uh our next report in November for October reporting any questions so far the next four to five pages is more detail of line by line of the in um of those numbers of the line item numbers both for general fund and for Grants you can is it blurry or is it me is it blurriers to me as I'm scrolling down the blurs but I'm sorry so here's your totals for your grants what we have in Grants will be year-to-date our encumbrance and then the balance so um if you guys do have any questions and I know we're short on time um just please email me or call me and I and I'll get back to you with those answer are there any questions as of right now okay well I think I'm gonna turn it over now to John he's going to uh discuss about our Danbury Career Academy um Staffing 101 .

foreign [Music] foreign [Music] and to the Republic for which it stands one nation under God indivisible with liberty and justice thank you everyone I hope everyone is enjoying their lunch so what you have today what you are eating today this is what our students in the High School District enjoy on a regular basis uh the newest item that you're tasting if you've got it is the shake Ramen which is actually one of my personal favorites uh what we did not serve today is actually my personal favorite which is the Smucker's uncrustable peanut butter and grape jelly sandwich that's actually my favorite lunch so my staff knows that uh I do want to take a moment to uh to recognize a few people in the room before we get started into the formal part of our session uh which is State superintendent Thurman thank you for coming sir uh representative perea thank you for coming we appreciate it Mr Massey from the csba thank you for coming and Victoria Victoria Torres from the Sam Wally Foundation thank you [Applause] we also want to recognize our board super our board president uh al-jabbar thank you for coming [Applause] thank you for coming and trustee Piercy thank you very much for coming we appreciate your support thank you so much uh we're going to go ahead and get started with our superintendent um who is going to deliver a few remarks oh here we go thank you you know first of all I want to put a shout out to Orlando and his wonderful staff you know it's uh and I want to really double down on Banking and our friends from the California Department of food and agriculture as well as our friends from as well as our friends from all the way from Washington DC who came with the Appropriations Committee as well we were getting a for superintendent Thurman and Congressman Korea we got a little education about Appropriations how how they're the most popular people here I know so thank you you know I wanted to uh just start with a quote from Bob Moses the late civil rights leader who founded the algebra project and he put it this way the questions that we think face the country are questions which in one sense are much deeper than civil rights there are questions which go very much to the bottom of mankind and people there are questions which have repercussions in terms of a whole International Affairs and human relations their questions which go to the very root of our society what kind of society will we be and ladies and gentlemen I'm so proud folks assembled here who are doubling down with our students in the audience to Amanda Gilmore our student trustee who represent the future not only of Greater Anaheim but through this wonderful State and Country we have so as we know there's a lot of divisiveness out there there's no question that food insecurity can bring people together you know I was talking to our friends over here with the Cal California Reef cow fresh right which is the old kind of food stamps program what and um is it Maribel yeah she was explaining how I mean she was grateful to be here as all of you are because what we're doing is we're connecting the need for healthy food healthy nutrition right with the with you know once you get the food stamps and what you purchase that's a huge missing piece and we also spoke about the importance of showing the world that government does work right because there's so much of a narrative out there that somehow things are broken and uh again the folks in this room representing all the institutions are showing that we can make it work and I think that's that deserves a round of applause I want to um I think also talk a little bit about the importance of the universal meal program and uh thanks to our governor and uh certainly Mr Thurman and those of The Advocates of the state to ensure that our families and young people have an opportunity for meals in the state of California and I think that definitely deserves a round of applause that's quite an accomplishment [Applause] and I do want to say this about our Community Schools what you're seeing is um teacher-led reform there's a lot we've been hearing a lot about school reform but this is a public school where teachers are leading reform in terms of positioning our kids to solve some of the most complex problems including food deserts in America is this the clicker here so we're you know I wanted to uh share the um the location of Magnolia High School this is in the middle of the food desert talking about Orange County we have some of the highest rates of food deprivation homelessness McKinney ventil numbers are among the highest in the district those are students who live in motels who sleep on the floor every day but yet come to school you know this is a huge problem in America especially in urban spaces covet exposed us they exposed the gaps of inequity in our society and again thank you to all of the stakeholders here for coming together in terms of resources and funding and ensuring that we can help solve this problem I want to give a quick numbers of uh and this is thanks to the Orange County Equity task force that looks at census data and data across Orange County there's about 580 census tracts in Orange County in terms of what they call the Social Progress Index Magnolia is ranked 559th out of 580.

foreign [Music] my goodness I feel like I never left okay we're gonna start we're going to get here in a second uh but just a friendly reminder that uh today we are live and so we are live now on zoom and on YouTube um that is a microphone right there and so it picks up our conversation so whatever yep so we don't have to pass out the microphony thing so even if I turn around and say hey like that it's still it's gonna pick up that conversation so there's a brand new reminder uh that we are not even under your breath saying anything okay um hi everyone good to see you all uh we're gonna go again go ahead and get started since there are people virtually joining us maybe perhaps we have no idea um but uh we wanted to start out as usual with a little bit of an icebreaker just the opportunity for us to kind of connect get to know each other a little bit more now this I trigger is rather controversial so I want you guys to be aware of it um so what we'd like to hear from you is for the sake of folks who are live streaming in tell us your name tell us your affiliation and then tell us what is the worst animated Disney film in your personal opinion and why all right everyone got that name affiliation worst animated Disney film in your personal opinion like you could say you're a student yeah yeah whenever people are ready yeah and if you want to I mean this is what I do with my students um about your ideas and we'll bring it back yeah one more time worst animated this is the film worse worse worse but not the best worst yeah I'll start okay yeah you'll look it up all right I am the superintendent uh here in Azusa and I just I don't know why but I think I remember not really liking Hercules very much yeah you got to give us a reason I just I don't know I just thought I remember like seeing it it wasn't that uh impressive but I was young but that's probably probably that's what I would do probably okay okay my name is soya Ford and I think the worst animated Disney film that I ever saw was Sinbad it was years ago and I was young and I was like I can't stand this thing I I like movies where they sing but I just couldn't get into the movie so I never watched it again okay and I'm a Disney fan through and through so what was it about it that like you couldn't get into the whole movie just the whole like theme of the whole movie I just couldn't understand it okay okay I like ten commandments the the long version when I was a kid I used to watch it so watching Sinbad I was like I can get it yeah like you are the diamond no no no none of that interested okay okay worst Disney movie ever anyone else got one okay so hi my name is high school I represent them I'm a senior uh I guess the worst animated movie from Disney in my opinion would have to be sleeping beauty and here's why I just don't see any reason why you know like the like the point to it and the meaning behind it all I see is just somebody kind of like a man trying to save a girl with ambulance dress [Music] but I don't think it gives off the right meaning or at least the way they intended it to but there was no music so there's that too okay is there I'm kind of the same opinion so I'm Jess that's Wong um I'm a consultant um and I had the same thought I watched Cinderella a lot when I was growing up but the only part that really stuck with me with the mice which I really liked um at the very end where her dress changes colors you guys remember this part it's like conflicting of that school but the rest of it was pretty other facts yeah I'm Diana Benavides and um I agree same movie Cinderella um for the same exact reasons but you will be shared yeah I'm Patricia Sanchez I uh represent CSEA and I don't care for the rescue groups whoa those are fighting words I'm sorry the animation drawing illustration was not appealing to me and um yeah I didn't like the actors in it either so I was I was bored it was like I mean sorry it was that okay okay the first one or the second one the first one the original was Ava Gabor and Bob Newhart yeah okay okay what else so I guess I'll go um so it was name and affiliation affiliation so my name is Jacqueline Hernandez I am a ghs alumni and uh I know some people might disagree but The Emperor's New Groove I did like some parts of it but not really the funky settled apart like makes them seem like the good guys that was weird um so yeah that's kind of the part that I don't like about it I can't read the people-heartedly on that I was gonna mention that mainly because I know it was referencing Peru my family's Peruvian yeah so just seeing that my parents had didn't feel resonated with it they didn't feel like you know it was historically or culturally adapted so that was frustrating and to see that they just didn't see the point to it as well yeah all right who's next I'll go so I'm Nathan Nunez um gabrielano also known as tongva and I would have to say that Frozen would be his favorite movie because of the song in particular in times I've heard that song we've stopped him forever I appreciate it I appreciate that movie thank you all right she's next yes um I'm very Santos I'm a junior at senior high school and from like my family's at Disney family so we enjoy watching the movies but one that I don't think necessarily at the worst but one that I had to like sit down and fully watches um Robin Hood I think yeah every time I like they charge again it's probably a good movie but I just can't sit down and watch it because it just doesn't catch my attention so I have something embarrassing to admit when I was really young I had a crush on Robin Hood no big deal are you jealous of me Marion um all right next uh Sierra High School and my worst Disney film would be Bambi because Among Us what about um Dumbo how do you feel my number Dumbo similar feelings I'm not gonna lie I really don't like Disney that much I'm in the same boat you're only having two daughters Frozen long car rides okay so my name is Carolina Dominguez and I'm going to stay here at Watson high school I'm gonna be honest I don't really watch like TV so I don't really know a lot of Disney shows or movies but I would say the one with the Dalmatian dogs um 101 Dalmatians yeah I don't just that's like what keeps playing I'm like trying to think of other things that I can't because that one's just like right there and I'm just like okay what is it that you don't like about that movie I think it's just boring I can't like just sit and watch it and I I remember I like tried watching it but it just I could never sit and watch it but yeah okay okay thank you I can go next my name is Violetta Ramirez I am an Azusa High alumni um and I have never actually sat down and watched it um but I would say Aristocrats Aristocats um just because I have this irrational fear of cats like make myself sit down and watch it but yeah where does your fear of pets come from do you know I don't know I just have a very like early memory of like just being just suddenly being this like terrified of cat so yeah okay uh my name is Sarah Serrano Luna I'm uh alumni and I think my least favorite Disney you're not really big on Disney but I don't like Wreck-It Ralph uh my nephew went through very big I hate that face so now we're on Luca and I don't mind it foreign ER at Sierra um I have to say I don't really I don't really dislike any Disney movie like it's gonna grow up to them so I mean I did go in and out you know I had a kid so that's what entertained them so if I was going in and out I'm like I don't care they like it I'm good you know so I can't really complain the singing is always good because then they sing along so I don't have a one that I don't like okay so they like it that means you like it yeah there you go you got some time to do your thing yeah appreciate that other folks I don't know what about you my name is Kevin Nunez and um Gabrielle uh Tribal member um I don't think really any of Disney movies I would say maybe one being native I guess Pocahontas that was a gross exaggeration of true representation I mean really uh talking facility movie didn't resemble at all the real Pocahontas and you know it's played up as a this journey of uh Discovery but that falls into manifest Dennis Stephanie in Westward Expansion he plays into the stereotypes representations that people think natives are from the truth the song was good there's that all right uh stop my name is Maria merito and um I'm a Glaston parent and it's not that I don't like it it's just that I got tired of seeing it like I used to take care of my knees and they always watch um pinocho so it's not that I don't like to show that they repeat that again again I guess actually that isn't that everything all right uh all right well thank you so much for uh engaging in that um just a piece of housekeeping before we get started um just a reminder to all of us about what we said in terms of how we want to be together as a committee we know that we want to be vulnerable respect for one another have an encourage to speak having and cultivating humility uh creating room for us to make mistakes it's okay to make mistakes um the imagination creativity to create something new and open-mindedness and then I knew it at the end uh when we are in disagreement to start with questions to help us to try to understand one another all right um so at this point we'd like to invite one of our committee members Nathan to go ahead and read a statement that was drafted by a subject sure okay good evening parents students and the community accompany us today is our third meeting for the mascot committee our first two meetings were not live streamed because we were introducing ourselves determining Community Values and establishing a plan going forward this committee is composed of a diverse group of community Representatives including students parents teachers alumni and Indigenous Community the indigenous members within our own City tonight we'll begin the mascot-related discussions and start the process of identifying an appropriate mascot the committee has voiced the intention to identify and make a decision related to the mascot in four to six weeks this decision will be within the parameters established by the Board of Education those parameters include the authority grants in the committee to decide on a new mascot or no mascot the board of education has determined this is a high school name the word Aztec and the colors will remain but that the current Aztec mascot would need to be addressed the committee has agreed on core values to guide conversations and decisions on the future mascot representation additionally we will provide a timeline of events and cultural awareness and topics related to indigenous cultures we hope the community can join us in the sharing these core values as conversations are held and decisions are made these core values include transparency with the community timeliness on a mascot decision Foster encouraged a sense of unity between the high schools a mascot that is culturally appropriate unifying and empowering and the importance of indigenous education for the committee and students timeline of events to increase transparency and accuracy a timeline and no worthy events will be shared the Board of Education decided Azusa High School will be the one Comprehensive High School in our district with Gladstone to close as a high school on January 18 2022 the Board of Education voted some merge merged schools and have a new name new colors a new mascot for merger the board of education then decided to reverse the decision and maintain this is a high school name and colors but change the mascot the merger will happen in 2023 the board of education then grants the committee authority to decide on a new mascot or no mascot for the high school or redesigning of the mascot next section cultural awareness understanding our history is of utmost importance when tasked with decisions on cultural identification and representation therefore it is necessary to understand the general verb is associated within the context of this discussion the term indigenous for first those people with pre-existing sovereignty who are living together as a community prior to contact contact with cellular populations in the context of this discussion those who are indigenous to the concept of America include the pre-settler indigenous peoples of the north South Central and South America the term Native American commonly refers to people's living within what is now the United States prior to settler contact American Indian is an art term used similar to Native Americans and is often used in the legal sense by tribal governments and the United States however in the context of identity and visibility those of American indigenous descent will prefer to use the name of the individual's particular indigenous Community or nation of people for example the gabrieleno also called the tongva or Kish are the indigenous peoples of the Los Angeles area and they are also known as American Indian Native American and indigenous it is important to remember acknowledge indigenous people have experienced displacement cultural racial identity loss generational trauma and the hiding of culture from the different waves of colonization across Americas given these reasons names and identifiers related to indigenous culture must be observed through a historical cultural and modern day lens resetler arrival and to the present-day the constant of America's home to thousands of tribes each having their own Traditions rituals protocols and ways of life items such as musical instruments including the drum are considered sacred and only played by those who have undergone cultural trial protocol and in specific cultural settings with spiritual intentionality specific dress such as regalia are the closed headdress you see indigenous people wear are considered sacred and earned over years of ritual tradition Rank and cultural immersion due to the inaccurate portrayal of the American indigenous person in movies and books and the lack of education on business history there are many stereotypes of how an American indigenous person looks behaves speaks lives and demonstrates culture therefore approaching conversation centered on business culture involves an understanding of the significance and medium cultural items persons objects and the historical historical portrayal of the American indigenous person the topic of mascot representation has been an ongoing conversation for many years now examples of recent changes include the Washington Redskins commanders the Cleveland Indians Guardians and the San Diego State Aztecs logo mascot change conversations about the cultural accuracy of this of the Aztec mascot at Azusa High School started in the 1990s these concerns are again voiced to the board of education on January 18 2022 by multiple indigenous peoples groups from primarily mashika Aztec dancer groups and Families please know that we are not taking this decision lightly this can be an emotional divisive issue for many people the committee's hope is to make a choice on a mascot that might bring a sense of unity and belonging to not only our students but to the whole community thank you for joining us through this process as we move forward just thank you Nathan just to uh to reiterate uh what was uh said in the statement um and to create reiterate here and I know that we heard this already multiple times but uh just for purposes of the audience and those that may be listening and watching I'm going to one more one more time State uh what our Authority and what our work here is um the board of education has already decided that Azusa High School will remain Azusa High School uh we're not changing the name of the high school they have also decided that the colors that they currently have right now will remain the colors of Azusa High School so again we don't have authority to change the colors blend the colors those kinds of things they have also decided that Azusa High School will continue to be known as the Aztecs um so again we cannot change that reverse that drop that modify that uh so those three decisions have already been made uh to what Nathan read the decision that has been rendered upon this committee though is that we must not might not consider not think about but we must change the current mascot that we have at Azusa High School for reasons stated in our statement right um and so that is artwork our work is to is to to think about again like it says in our statement what are we going to do about the mascot knowing that we're still as was a high school knowing that we're still the blue black white colors and knowing that we're still uh the Aztecs so just wanted to uh point that out and I forgot to say this is um so just wanted to again bring us back and ground Us in that conversation get one yes all right so um we are going to move and Jessica and I are gonna do this together uh we're going to move to uh some ideas that this group has proposed for possibilities for the mascot of Azusa High School um and what we're going to be asking is that the person who put out the idea give us a little bit of their points their case their why this is why I think this should be considered uh to be in consideration uh for the mascot this is why I think it's a good it's a good one once they State their case anybody in the committee may have a clarifying question for the person like oh you said this can you can you tell me more about that this is not like he's not idea is not good why did you think of that not those kinds of questions right these are questions to try to get a better understanding inside the head uh of the why of the person um once we have kind of also any any kind of questions that we have and some of those questions might not the person who presents might not be able to answer it themselves that's okay right and so this is an opportunity if we have communal knowledge that we can contribute and great and if not we can make a note that we need to do more research about this particular question right so any question that you might have around the image suggested thank you once questions are out there and they have been out there um if there is a need or a want we can further discuss that idea that's currently on the table um and then once we have discussed it talked about it heard about it we're going to move to a boat now it's very very important to note I'm going to wrap right now that the vote okay um it's important to note that we are not voting to say oh yes this this should be the mascot what we're going to do is we're going to say hey this mascot right here doesn't meet the criteria that we have laid out for the mascot if the Mesa criteria whether I love it or hate it is doesn't matter all we're trying to say is does it meet the criteria if it meets the criteria then it goes in a maybe pile and we can worry about what happens to that next if it doesn't meet the criteria we can be very specific about that and then we say okay well that one cannot move forward for consideration so again we will be and we'll talk ad nauseum about this but again we're not going to be voting to say oh my gosh yes that's the one where there's going to be voting doesn't mean the criteria cool we'll leave it for consideration uh in the near future yeah and the criteria that we laid out before together was the mascot image has to be culturally appropriate that helps bring about Unity that offers a sense of belonging and representation and that it's an image assumed to be proud of right those are the criteria that we laid out before everyone good with all that anything that we need to discuss before we get started any questions or concerns all right now some of the ideas that were sent in were sent in just in words so there's not an image per se uh and some did come in with the image when we get to the ones that have an image for those of you watching us or hearing us on Zoom or YouTube we will post that image if there's no image then please note that the reason there's no posting is because I'm not an image Associated uh with that yeah all right with that being said um I believe that this was uh the first one is from Diana if I'm not mistaken yeah um so take it away okay well I thought I thought about this for a long time even before being on the committee that the Jaguar would be a good idea for a mascot because um as we know and as Nathan read in the statement it's so important to honor our ancestors the indigenous um and native people of this region particularly and of the Aztecs since we hold the Aztec high school name the Jaguar is um a very symbolic power animal spirit animal teaching animal um honored animals that fits all regions so it goes It goes way back um from the incense um the Mayans and the Aztecs held this animal in very high regard and um even here um um I don't know if it's a it's it's related to the mountain lion um and so in this region of zusa we've heard of mountain lions even being caught here in canyons in the last few years two of them and so I felt that the Jaguar would be very appropriate um for student staff and City members to feel really proud of I wrote some things down here about what the Jaguar actually symbolizes could I read it out loud yeah so um here just some research that I did and I've been doing for years because this is actually an I don't know but I highly highly respect um and have personally learned a lot from its characteristics but it says here for my research Jaguars are an animal and symbol from the North to South America from the Mayans Aztecs engines the Jaguar represents the power to face one's fears or to confront one's enemies however they are also associated with vision which means both their ability to see during the night and to look into the dark parts of even the human heart the Jaguar often wears warrants sorry of disaster he it does not offer any reassurance along with physical Vision Jaguars are also associated with prescience and the foreknowledge of these come cats have monocular vision meaning each eye can work on its own which provides them with better depth perception this gives more evidence to their connection with vision and foresight some jaguar cats they have no Predators they rule the wild that they inhabit due to their strength their speed their agility and fear fearlessness they are the largest cat on this side of the planet symbolical North Central South America the Jaguar teaches us courage in the face of fear instinct to be and to do our best at all times to aim higher to have confidence to take leadership and to help others the Jaguar is an integral part of the Aztec and Mayan of the Mayan civilism representing leadership wisdom and clever use of innate skills medicine people trusted the Jaguar as a spirit animal or a guardian against ill evil Jaguar had motherly aspects graceful and nurturing and a fire in the belly that's not extinguishable the tribe's respected Jaguar's planning and use of intention in getting What It Wants here Jaguar Spirit may change the human connection with all the four elements water air fire and Earth and provides a burn Foundation it is fertile balanced and saturates every corner of creation so that is um my first um it's respected in many cultures and and many parts of the world so yeah any clarifying questions for Diana regarding the Jaguar or comments any any questions in general so I'm going to play the devil's advocate here and say as if there's any opposition as to why this would not be a good you know logo because from what I'm from what I'm seeing it's like learning something that could be symbolic to everybody but I wonder if there's something that could you know not potentially be convenient for everybody and if there is whether it be something that consider when considering the Jaguar so let's open it up are there is there anything we can come up with or think of that might like cause an issue we were to choose this as an image well how does this relate to something indigenous to our region I wanted to ask Kevin and Nathan put their thoughts on if that's okay well as far as a direct connection no it wouldn't help um though the respect and admiration of the big cat is in our tribal beliefs important or even in horticulture but um there's not a direct connection I mean as the Jaguar was native to this area so we don't have anything within our cultural teachings or history that would connect this amount shots or anything you want to follow up on yep so if it meets our criteria that's not a human so it wouldn't be gonna be too much of a stretch outside of our the culture of our region to I mean it still goes back to the Mind against in the assets but I know that that connection is going to exist simply because for me actually yeah that that's it does have relation to the meshika people so um and that respect yeah would be an accurate connection but um again since the retainment of the name Aztec it would be difficult to connect culturally our people to their people and our guests more than 1500 miles separates us we're entirely different cultures thank you foreign things we want to explore a little bit more question would there be anything on this Jaguar that we would include or why not anything on it is it just an animal correct just the animal yeah that's it maybe a quick side note uh because as you can as you can see here there is no visual representation um I think with whatever we land whether it's a jaguar or a chair a brick whatever that is uh part two of this and not not here and now um and we can think about how to involve a lot of people will be um design feedback um right because probably to your point there's a million different ways that we can be the Jaguars if this is where you were gonna go but making sure that it still fits the criteria that we established number one and then number two again maybe getting like a broader uh voice of people saying like oh I like number one or I like number three years you know contacts that kind of thing that we design what those possibilities may be um can we do it backwards can send like voting yes or no for you to say should anybody in here think that this does not fit our criteria yeah either way okay all right all right so does anybody in the room object the Jaguar not because you don't like it but because it doesn't fit what we have been talking about and again if we move it forward it's only to be considered in the future there's not this does not mean that we're going to become the Jaguars anybody have an objection let's go and do our EA books that's a lot of pressure for that one person like all right let's do it yeah okay all right uh so everyone in favor of moving the Jaguar forward into consideration pile not a yes pal but just we're considering it are we raising hands yeah [Music] I'm not opposed but I'm not against it okay that's fair that's right all right so I think uh all right Diana it's you again yeah I have one more because the Jaguar's been used before and I also thought about being unique you know to this region um also for the students and Community to feel proud the only um symbol on the Mayan calendar but also um sorry Aztec uh calendar but um also a very important symbol for the F6 in general is this a symbol of movement you know and so um this is actually used now um this concept in different educational Frameworks in ethnic and social uh justice studies and it alludes to four perceiving ages or sons in history so I'll read a little bit about this symbol so the Dale leans regarded by the mesoamericans as an auspicious State speaking action not for being passive it also signifies a kind of disorder to find order again to undo to redo transformation and seismic changes the day sign only is the symbol of naviolin concept of Aztec cosmology it features two differently colored interlaced lines each with two Central ends the symbol also features an i in the center so the way this works is there's four sites four lines that come around it each line represents one of the four directions North East Southwest it also represents the four elements water fire earth and air um and it's also the movement that we see when we look up at the skies so um when we line or trace the lines of the Big Dipper and the small Dipper and you connect them at the four different seasons on the exact dates of um like um The Equinox um and Solstice of every year for each of the four seasons um it marks exactly if you were to trace on that day um a line that eventually creates a cross if this makes sense um and so this is the cross so it's a representation of what's happening in the sky um as an imprint of what's Happening Here on earth and the eye in the center is like the center of this the the Earth as the center of this space um the Universe um and so this symbol would represent the center um being the center of the whole Space here in our community um and one more thing I'll read here at the bottom the concept of a lean has been popularly used as an education oh I've heard that already that's it that's all I have so there's that oh and you can also see there's an arrow going through the eye between um the four ends thank you Anna questions uh about um this particular uh idea or any questions in general about this one or comments so it's a it's a literal real symbol that the Aztecs use and it's actually represented on their calendar so it's actually in the middle of the Aztec calendar so if you look at the middle the whole Aztec calendar right in the center is this very exact symbol but in the Aztec calendar it's a base with the tongue sticking out so here instead of the face with the tongue sticking out it's the eye okay um that and um it's also um you can see it so in on the Aztec calendar they have 20 days instead of 30 31 days and it represents one the energy or the symbol for one of the 20 days because each of the 20 days has its own a symbol that represents it one of them is also the Jaguar but there's the eagle there's um the element of water in the other of the 20 days and this movement so this is one of the 20 days Fox questions I have a question how do you imagine or maybe it's a question for all of us with a symbol like this how do we imagine you know at the current moment we have students who dress up right as a mascot how do we imagine this like what might that look like well maybe this wouldn't be a Mascot Lane okay got it yeah so what was on a uniform or something what would follow that If This Were the logo how could you represent that without being offensive you mean like as a mascot like yeah it is right I think that when we get to something like this that we don't have a physical mascot mascot that goes to events and I don't want to in any way shape or form make any assumptions so I'm going to ask so like for instance the Jaguars like it it we could still be the as a high we could still be as was a high school assets and leave it like that but we could also videos there's a high-stick Aztec Jaguars this one I'm going to assume that we would be the high school Aztecs and again this becomes again like a logo a logo that we can use but or or would you say no we could still be because it was a High School Aztec Marines I haven't thought about it that far okay yeah that would be for everyone to decide but that would be like saying the Aztec movements because what it literally means is movement so I don't think it would be appropriate to say all the means but we could make it work I could be wrong you know I would have to we'd have to look into that and see if that can work and we brought up right we brought up that there's a lot of places that have logos and don't have a mascot like my unfortunate doctors this weekend there is like there is nothing that goes out during the game and dances around isn't there like a guy with a big baseball head yeah he's like a baseball hat no those are bobbleheads but that's not we have to stay at least correct but that's what I'm saying we don't have a master we don't have somebody dressing up as you know something where other teams do right they have the pirate the pirate or they have the Philly whatever that guy is Natalie had something um this kind of coincides of whatever logo we decide but what would become of the warrior and where you're at I think she's a high school because those are Aesthetics right and they're trying to get the tree off space so when it comes to making a logo I think we all kind of you know are reading more towards for now the logo and not a natural mascot so when it comes to representing that logo and the name Aztec what would become of the warrior so that's those are yeah those will be conversations afterwards depending on where we land but again I'm going to keep falling back on and I'm not saying I agree or disagree uh but there are schools that do not have mascots and so the people that run out there are people who are dressed in a and Azusa and come on cheering people on and you know those kinds of things um so again I don't think that there's anywhere that we have to say that there has to be somebody dressed as something right to do school spirit or to run around or whatever and again I'm not saying I'm opposed I'm not saying I'm four I'm just saying there is that reality but those conversations will happen after this group decides you know what it is we're going to be I do just want to oh go ahead I do want to just bring a concern that I saw from the last game associated okay every students were wearing like a headband with a you know with a feather and that's kind of a problem you know what I mean like when we associate it with the assets as soon as I feel like that is okay and it's kind of it's really not it's not okay here it's not okay anywhere else so it's just kind of like to show students to not understanding that degree and I'll say Jacqueline inside the students I think it's adults too yeah a lot a lot of them so you know that's the only concern that I saw that I'm like I thought about it when I saw the pictures I'm like and we still associate something with the ethic it's still going to fall into something like that and also the signs like I don't know even like not indigenous people think it's a spirit animal or something it's just weird like it's inappropriate so it's just some of the signs too it just didn't feel appropriate so that's just what I wanted to to voice yeah that's a that's a great point right that's the work that has to come as we as we continue to to think about these types of things um that that is work that now that we have to do okay so uh two comments um first one is you know we've already established that the name Aztec we'll we'll stay and seeing someone who's Gabrielino how do we convey this movement idea without erasing the people who were here before first question second question is how does Gladstone students feel Unity from this image when it's very different from their current reputation so questions that could be for the whole committee does that speak for Dan Ethan can I ask you just to um to start out so your first question was uh around how do we um can you can you read it sure so regarding movement related to the symbol how business not overshadow the symbol that logo overshadow the Gabrielino people who are still here invisible got it got it got it so that's the first question did you I mean do you have ideas like are you thinking like this isn't possible or or do you have ideas of how that might happen I think if this is put forward then it's inevitable that there will be that overshadowing there will be that that continued invisibility so that's my concerned and is it because it's so clearly connected with the past like Aztec imagery correct okay got it it's helpful what are other folks now I have a question for make them so because gabrielinos are native to the area do you want gabrielino's to be more represented as opposed to the Aztec is that that's a that's a loaded question so again like I said in the beginning Aztec is chosen the words in a state right so we understand and we all understand that it's not going to be a representation of gabriellinos right because it can't be connected so that's what I'm saying representatives of the Native Community we have two rules really one is tribally speaking in the interests of our drive and preservation of our own culture and the prevention of racial um that's in addition to what we have here that's something that has just been a personal um perspective that we can bring as well as our um tribal chairman asking us to be here in that role in addition to that it's our as members of the indigenous native Community we keep a finger on the pulse of the community to understand what the community is thinking so in that case if I were to put our tribal thoughts aside because my son I think did a good job speaking on that and to look at movement um this complex um representation and any culturally complex representation requires a deep amount of understanding of their spiritual cosmology religious beliefs this goes beyond my ability to speak on behalf of the mishika people because they would have to speak on that this is representation how do I make that more clear well I wouldn't be one to speak on representations for the Catholic faith or the Islamic faith this is not something in a history book that's in the past nor is there culture in the past it's alive now and there are people whose the machine could have their their religion their beliefs and it's alive and well it's not something that we're just looking at as a side note so as to what their thoughts would be that's you know that's that's something that they would have to chime in with but again it is um a very strong cultural representation to which I don't know the entire history of it so I couldn't elaborate further but I would say that I would defer to them if it were to be decisions like this should involve the tribal group most effectively represented by it so maybe we can put asterisk here and say if this image moves forward that we do need to be checking in right and and ask folks that are part of that Community right and in addition to that one in having um spoken to the elders about the decision that was made at Gabriel little high school um again there was a discussion of what is religion and separation of uh church and state and public education so um murals that can be painted represent religious acts and again that's something that has to be considered yeah of course too bad too so in an Ideal World what would be a presentation for gambling well for us yeah that's that that's I know that's all about it's not a not a sense we're not actively evolved tribally in deciding representation of our tribe in a high school I don't think that that would fit in this because the name is text not we're not looking at consideration as we want to build a new high school we're taking the high school we've come to you as a tribe and we're asking you what that's going to work we're not in this conversation because this isn't about our credit um yeah um but our school is working at making sure that we are going to offer classes for our students correct that they'll be able to understand our history so I'll say it a different way I think that one of the things that not only here uh but in other circles and in other outlets um I think that there has been a request or a thirst that um education be part of what uh has transpired what is transpiring and so yes we do have plans to think about how that gets done yes anything else before we take a vote on this one um I have a question about the voting yes is it a simple majority what if people feel that this is not culturally appropriate but only three people say that is is one note that we considered that what does a group think um because this one might just based on the conversation might have uh yes but like yeah I mean that we can move it forward if we speak to people who have some background and some skin in this and they say yeah that would be perfectly okay or we can say if they say I don't know that's that's a little dicey or look like that's that doesn't really serve us well then then we say no but I guess the question is I mean the question right now yeah yeah so we're we're creating that caveat right if you say like if this is going if we vote Yes on it right now that there needs to be additional research done and people that we contact right to get to to see whether or not this is actually appropriate right but recognizing that would that caveat do we want a simple majority or do we want to say like if there are certain people on the video you aren't aren't okay with it then you know it doesn't go into our movie path um it's more of a comment I think it's a little hard to make a I'm just looking at it right we have already only seem to kind of hard to decide what even to consider just because I mean we're already I'm I'm sitting here and I'm looking at it and I'm kind of thinking ahead I'm like okay if we consider Jaguar what we'll go with that how do students feel not just how we feel here how do the students feel knowing that it's a Jaguar representing it and it's okay right or let's say we go with this how are the students going to feel knowing that this is going to be the representation not just us I mean I'm just a parent and I look at it like what are you gonna do with that even a Jaguar what are you gonna do with the Jaguar you know anything else so I feel like maybe we can see what they are first and then kind of go based on each one and see how we feel how we can add so that maybe I don't know it just builds a little kind of like we're already making a decision um even if we're putting it to the side and it's being considered that's kind of how it feels so it almost feels like okay if we don't make that choice then it's not going to be on the list but then it might be something good somebody might like it I just feel like I don't I'm not really knowing how it's gonna set like I think I'm thinking ahead that's all I'm just thinking of how the loved oneself is going to represent it so that's why I said I'm not opposed to it but I'm not against it so I don't know I don't know if anybody else was this way kind of deciding on those people like how do you feel like we should get through the um what we have and then decide yeah how we want to vote for it yeah okay you can do that um can I make a suggestion for calling the board with the second one I wanted to get out you know because um because of what Kevin said this is a Aztec chica representation and we really need someone from that Community to educate and I am learning I mean I'm here as an alumni I feel like I'm a student and I'm listening and I'm learning and so to me these ideas when I did the research seemed great and all encompassing but when I hear from other perspectives I realize there's more learning to be done and more consideration to be taken before really looking at this as a serious option so I would like to um yeah we drive yeah and I appreciate that I think the truth that we are all learning right this is the learning process that we're as we go through this we are learning more and more right so you're you're definitely not alone in that so yeah I think so I mean we're going to move forward and I agree with that too because we should look at them first but um I think off the end when we do look at them we can kind of maybe you look up a checklist of like what's really appropriate I could recycle through appropriate but what does that mean right I think a lot of folks might wonder like what does that mean so maybe having a checklist of like businesses and check that so that way we can look at them once we're done and then have like a little like checkbox so we can feel a little more comfortable too what a culturally appropriate means James I I agree with her um I think that after kind of going through this to kind of do a little bit more research based on what we kind of okay we're gonna put this aside and get a little more in depth to what we're kind of choosing if it's not a symbol yeah um just to make sure that we're not offending anybody um and I agree with Diana that we're taking this out because to me we're only representing one group and it can be offensive to some other people who are not of that descent um so I just I think doing you know kind of okay we're gonna put this aside we're gonna put this aside but then to kind of look into it a little further and do a little more homework to make sure that we're not going to offend somebody else sure and but also what I heard you also say was the issue of uh Unity right like it represents one group but it doesn't it doesn't represent everybody yeah other folks okay yeah I think I think it needs to be more more about unity and not representing the Aztecs okay um the next one uh the reason there's two is very subtle I don't know if you see the A and one and not the A and the other one um but this one has the mountains uh stars of Canyon City um that mountain range right there does show up in a lot of beams uh the a because obviously that a lot of mountain represents Azusa and then the hands showing the three high schools coming together um again let's pretend that this was the one yeah that we found it uh we would uh again uh go through a process of designers and all that good stuff and different representations uh of that um so questions or comments about this one I think this picture just looking at it brings Unity yeah bringing everybody together um because that's what we want that's the the I think that's the what we're trying to portray for everybody is bring everybody together I know that um you know some kids and adults spoke at December board meetings and January board meetings and things like that asking for Unity and changing things to represent everybody um because of the fact that that Gladstone is merging with the Souza and you know giving them kind of a new identity and I think this is a good representation of that yeah I think it can be worked on um but it's really good like I like the mountains I mean it is um you know we see we are we all see him when like when you get out of your house and you go to school like you see that and I think that's pretty cool yeah when I was getting just through these images this one caught my eye because uh it's a powerful powerful image and what it suggests and what it brings about and um it's it's a very created in the now and represents those that are in the community now and their feelings what really what this is a should be yeah and I like it with the a yeah I would also like to make a good comment because when I was trying to like make you know some ideas regarding the logo all I could think about were the mountains and this was mainly because somebody from New York had visited Us in Azusa and they were so wowed and fascinated by mountains and I'm like oh yeah they're there like every day you know you see them when you wake up I see it when I go to school I see VA and I see you know in a way like how that Representatives as a whole especially to the residents here and to the people who've lived here for you know centuries and I find that the mountains is a way that could apply to everybody without it being something that can appealed to only one because in general it is really just you know an equilibrium it can resonate with people and it can be subjective but it can't be the solely one like it's not biased because it's an inanimate object from what you can see and it can just be based on the interpretations of other people so that's why um I'm not sure if I mentioned this if we we mentioned this but a student board Representatives we asked a bunch of students their thoughts on the Aztec logo and you should be represented and I believe a few of them although wealthy a lot of them actually did say that they would like mountains to be on there simply because it is something that they see every day and they strongly resonate with me all right the same as you when we left that room I thought about the Manchester I was like how I don't know but I was thinking like even making the a little bigger but however the designer can you know like I said it can work on there can be many designs that we look at and pick out so I I it's funny because I thought about that too so I think it's a common thought that we're all having just I think I'm obviously not a designer but I mean there's lots of A's in here there's the a the obvious one but that middle Mountain looks like an a yeah the three halves coming together it also looks like an a yeah and like you said a designer would do much better than that I mean there's some some place but but and again this would be like a logo right this would be our our representation yeah our questions is this I really like this I like what everyone has said I agree with them to bring more Unity with the other two high schools is it possible to add an accent color like red to it like say this one could you just accent of it to the logo so yeah they feel more included in it yeah anything's possible right and again once we get to the the design phase um they'll have a transcript of this video and they'll hear what people said and you know and again right now we're not deciding right like that that's at a later part but if if we were to land here then again some of comments or suggestions or ideas and how do we interpret that then in a graphic design of that any up uh um what do we say we want to do yays that's what you want to do okay yeah raise your hand if this is okay to keep moving on again we are not just this doesn't mean yes I want this logo it just means yes it can move forward thank you all right moving on to uh number four uh sorry about the copyrighted up there um so this is actually something that we currently use already right now so this is not anything new I believe that the idea here the person that submitted was we're using this it has the pyramids as you can see right now in the center there uh pyramids and Aztecs are connected why not move with this questions or comments about this one quite honestly to me it looks more like Chichen it it's like a little bit higher so Mike can't pick you up okay I think like I'm not opposed for like a poster if I'm not like against it but I feel like if we want our community and like we want our students like from Gladstone to feel United I feel like this doesn't really like touch on that because it's just like how you said earlier it looks like kind of the same as the old um logo or like the logo they have now but it's like there's no correlation to making the Gladstone kids that are going over there feel United like it's just it's just the a the college still there but it's like um if we want like a master like a logo we want to make sure that our Gladstone could feel represented and that they feel heard because overall we don't want our community and we don't want like our students and our like kids to feel like they're not welcome and I feel like this having like the same like idea and the same logo as the previous one it doesn't represent that and it's not like it's not there's no difference honestly when my son came home with his sweatshirt with it on it I didn't know it was stairs until weeks later I thought it was a misprint so then I realized like oh those are stairs oh but it hit me a few weeks later a few days later what about changing the color of the a to the red candles in the blue color aren't we we're keeping the blue color that's for sure it was cool I mean you can add like an outline or like an accent an accent yeah a red accent but it's really just the same it is that's what that is currently in use right now to Catalina's point and I agree with that yep I'm completely opposed to this just because we're trying to build Unity this isn't building Unity this is a slap in the face for those kids this is the high school yeah smaller version yeah nothing has changed but you know you're starting out some places yeah yeah that violates one of our one of our [Music] um criteria criteria a sense of belonging and representation as well I mean all right any other thoughts before we take a vote on it all right uh all in favor of moving the sword raise your hand all right and thank you forever to everyone who submitted these ideas I know it's hard like someone put your ID out there and have people like take it apart and think about it um please know that I mean I hope that you feel like we're we're doing that as as a community right it's not um this isn't a communal process like Anna said we're all learning in the process of you know what what works and what doesn't work and why and all the kind of nuances of it all right okay moving on to uh the next one uh The Feathered Serpent uh do you want to speak about it a little bit or do you want me to speak about it on your behalf okay um so um the text is there uh we know well I shouldn't make assumptions but the feather service serpent is definitely uh a famous symbol that's connected quite often uh to the Aztecs and lots of different uh ways um foreign typically the name of this um again when we think about four years and um Power and strength this is definitely something that you see quite a bit uh whether appropriate or not appropriate I'm not going to speak to that but this is another idea that uh has been performed I have a comment um I think this being a symbol I mean not that it's a bad symbol but this being a symbol only represents an Aztec culture like the other movement symbol that we took out a few minutes ago in that same category I would think it would fall in the same category because it only represents one group of people and not everybody and that's what we're trying to strive for is to bring everybody together and not just focus on one foreign even just the first few words one of the most famous Divine symbols I think then we're going into the religious aspect that we don't understand the power and the significance behind it and this would require more than just someone from the Michigan coming and telling us about it we would actually kind of like what you can't really know high school did when they got permission from the elders I feel like we would need to do much more steps than just understanding what it means any thoughts comments questions things we wanna follow up on but I want to I want to Second what you said because I didn't come with an idea I didn't put myself out here like this so I want to thank everybody I did this work for us it gave us the opportunity to have these possibilities yes absolutely yes Rito do you wanna add anything or say anything or make any changes no yes I I do um I love this I mean it's a symbol but it's a very real um it's a very real symbol to Aztecs and I I know this personally um I thought about this symbol I actually asked my students if they could choose a mascot would it be most of them really liked hits on but I didn't request it because for the reasons that have been mentioned I felt that it was too powerful and we don't have enough of the background or even though to use it and so I thought it was very just not correct to use it was like I wanted to put it but I thought it wasn't I was it was too strong we don't have that um back forward and we would have to have like we would have to really be careful the way we talked this at our high school and um we just we hope that you know we're getting ethnic studies if it's going to happen and then we need to look at that curriculum to ensure that when we do ethnic studies that the students are learning the history and the culture of this whole area and then the Aztecs too so I mean that's so much work and so this would be so much work yeah thank you for bringing this one this is actually my favorite [Music] I disagree with Cecilia I it's a very which like you said a very powerful symbol and it's a great symbol to representing the Aztecs but again that doesn't bring new music for the other sports you know it would require so much respect right just it will require so much respect and yeah [Music] the things that people want to share questions that you have would it be fair to say that we should take this one out as well because of the representation of it you see some nods in the room I would say according to the criteria we used before voter symbol then I would agree yes I think that's where the vote comes in because this was her submit she submitted it so it would be her choice to retract if not we vote to move forward very close do you want to go forward with the vote shall we proceed what are you thinking you can remove it rivet you sure all right thank you for submitting yourself I appreciate it all right number six is identical to number one although there is a an idea here uh put forth um I don't again I don't want to speak for uh Miss madiko but uh I'm assuming this is just an idea um and we can look at others but I'll let her you want to speak on again it's the same one as the first one so steal the idea of a jaguar and why you know the idea behind why do you think because we already voted the other one forward the concept should should move right yeah do we need to re-litigate this that's true okay [Music] each you have one final in your packet but we do have one that came in today that we didn't get to um trips so the last one is armadillo is the art padillo and I was given the suggestion by talking with um some community members also and parents that gave me the suggestion um and they didn't really give me a reason as to why they came up with maybe the armadillos but I did a little bit of digging and you know it's Unique looking like all of our students like all of our people in our community um there's different species and we all come from different walks of life and it's difficult to trap our kids are you can't hold them in one place they're all over the place and I see that because I'm the boots on the ground so it's you know it's just something fun that's got a hard shell you know it's just unique looking I think it's just something different something to to just kind of represent our uniqueness in our area [Music] this is like a stretch question but is it possible to have like a logo and then a different mascot like say armadillos I have the mascot that have like a different mode so uh tell me more like um for example if he was supposed to go like share with the mountain logo and then have like a mascot with armadillos like is that like possible to have anything's possible um at the high school we do have something called logo sets right so it's not like one thing so um there'll be the mascot that another one that says that will say like Azusa then another one that's just the a so there's different things for different uses um so we do have sets here I think we're crossing the line a little bit to say like um I don't know I don't know how the group feels but maybe maybe it's too much I don't know I I that would be up to the up to the to the convenience that if if if yes or no I don't know yeah so it would be this is a High School Aztec armadillos or the milk with the mountain logo what if you Incorporated this you know putting out there you know um mountains in with armadillos somehow the designer Incorporated that scale so it would be like Aztec armadillos but then the symbol would have like mountains as well correct yeah something like that yeah um eventually because they would have no Warrior where you're at what if they were to come up with like the girl dressed as red you know maybe like a skirt a shirt something I don't know I I'm still thinking about it right and the guy dressed in blue pigs as not Warrior Warrior but they could come together instead of like being chosen they would walk in the middle of the field and kind of come together and shake hands and so that would represent the whole logo of the the one holding hands I don't know right I'm thinking ahead for the kids I'm also thinking like what would look nice out there that would look like it's been we're being united you know and that would literally show for Gladstone but also Azusa and then also represent our city and kind of like representing the hands like Gladstone energy together as well as a community yeah I think that's that's helpful I think as we kind of narrow down the images more and more I think these kind of race Romantics are going to be super helpful right to think about how these things I like what you said I'll the emblem of the canyon with the a but in the background even though the sun doesn't rise or set on that side but have something of a red hue that comes up so in the front it's blue it's kind of like how it is out here in our mountains we have we have different colors we have pinks Reds Blues purples all that but we can set forth something where they are the Aztecs we have the a we have the canyon the mountains and we have the Hue of the blue and the red coming forth so then it is a symbol of two coming into one I don't know just something to think about okay um any other questions about the armadillo and again we're just voting do we continue to consider it that's all we're doing any other questions on that okay raise your hand if you're okay holding the marmadillos for further consideration and it meets our criteria okay we have so that's right okay do you want to talk about you want to discussing it the objections are due which he's just saying if it's not unanimous okay so that's a no just to be very clear okay and then we did have one uh come in uh way at the end so I apologize and not everybody has a uh copy um yeah there's there's one right here if you want to hear so this is our last one um okay so I just want to preface a little bit um and just say that I'm not claiming to be an expert on anything or even saying that I have like a great amount of knowledge I did do my research just some time I try to find the most trustworthy sources I could um but I'm fully aware even that doesn't mean that I'm advanced in this knowledge and I just want to apologize in advance and let you guys know that um I'm here to learn too so yeah um I already saw like a spelling mistake I did and um also I'm not a graphic designer it was just um something to put together secondly I just want to um preface with that like a big ideal to me is representation um I'm a Latina in the film industry and on the Rarity actually which might be surprising to you there's very few Latinos in the film industry and were um as a whole um extremely under represented and that's to me a very harmful issue um because I think diversity is needed represents representation is needed and I think moving forward it could be great to have a symbol with meaning um that being said my suggestion is the agias which is um Eagles in English um I picked this I did a little research again I don't know everything um but it is I decided to connect um to the Aztec image because again I think representation is very much needed I think it involves the environment as a high school um I think that uh yeah I as much as I like the armadillos I think that um we should have a symbol that we can connect to and has meaning that people hear about us there's like a history and depth and a respectful one I agree upon that it needs to be respectful and with a lot of knowledge um but I would just hate for like us to not have something super in-depth and meaningful Glendora High School comes to visit us and they're like I don't care about the armadillos but maybe they do get interested by the ideas and the Aztecs and want to learn some history um because we don't know if they have um like indigenous things at their school um but yeah so that's my suggestion um it is connected to the Aztec history um because um just to do like a little brief meaning of the Aztecs Saw an Eagle perched on a cactus eating a snake um and that ended up becoming um that's how they founded the end of Japan um but this symbol also has stayed throughout um Mexican history and culture identity it is on the Mexican flag um it is um statues on different important though beans in Mexico um it's even on the soccer logo um but yeah I just think that it's used um I don't know it doesn't that doesn't mean that it's okay just because it's used but it is um so there is like some history that we can look into of that and um I think that equals and yes they're Brave fearless and daring and that is all things that I see at the Gladstone High School kids coming to Azusa um it's a big change something they didn't want to do um but it's just inevitable at this point and I think that really shows their strength in coming here um we can also connect it to American history I guess because we do have the bald eagle um then yeah I just think that we should be supporting diversity um and representation so I have a couple questions uh okay I know this is a pronoun these are just ideas but my first question is is this um is this uh an agila in general or are you saying specifically like it has to be this Aguila or the Aguila that's on the flag I'm I think that's like a further question but I this is just me like playing Graphics designer tonight um but I do like um the one that is used in Mexico but that doesn't have to be the exact same one I don't think it should be a bald eagle though because um yeah I'm open to different historically accurate yeah and then my second question okay and again I I don't see if I don't want to make assumptions so in this particular case this is a conscious decision that we would be known as the Aztec Aguilas versus the Eagles right exactly like it in Spanish again I don't want to make assumptions so so the idea here is that we'll be Aguilas which again means Eagles um and so the eagle would be our our mascot but in this case and instead of the Aztec Eagles it'll be the Asic Aguilas so to use the the Spanish name uh for the bird thoughts comments questions I personally like it we've been again I'm a Latina so I like it I like what it stands for and I like the fact that you know since they're gonna combine again I'm a Latina so the fact that it's coming together it's like we're just assuming right it's a majority of Mexican Americans and you don't think that maybe other people might be offended by it like because that's what they're going to represent right let's say they're incoming ninth graders and they're gonna be like I can't even say it you know what I mean we can it's easy for us but then other people are gonna be like Angela and what is Angela you know it's like and then we're gonna get offended because we're like it's just it's like when they say um I don't know if you've heard a lot of people they'll say in Duarte and I'll be like why don't you just say I'm gonna sound it out in Spanish first before I say it in English so you don't think people will get a little offended um I mean as far as using it in Spanish or in general no in general no um I again um maybe just I don't know if this completely answers but um so I am working in the film industry I went to a Latina um media fest last week that was working there and um we were talking about representation and having to support other groups so just like as an example in the Heights came out and that was mainly Puerto Ricans in the movie um I'm not Puerto Rican but I'm a Latina and I understand that Puerto Ricans are very underrepresented so I watched it they had my support did I like it maybe not but you know what I mean they have my support um same with different movies um there's a really famous actress right now as bobner said she's Peruvian I'm not Peruvian but she has no support and I don't want to tear down their win so I'm assuming that's just in something um people who don't resonate with Mexican culture but are Latin or even not Latino don't want to or when you know um in a sense especially like I said in media like um there's shows like hentified that people don't really resonate with but we got a show with Latinos on TV and that's like a big win so I guess it's always like catch tradition I also like saying the name um I think we also need to like as a society who will need a push back um I have a nephew who's named Sebastian I think people are going to say Sebastian that's all that but he's my sister already said you know we're gonna say Disney Sebastian he's gonna have to tell us teachers nope so same thing with I guess I guess you know just correct them help them in a nice way to teach them yeah people have we could say Timothy Charlemagne okay other thoughts questions is this like a brainstormed idea yeah that's just like I was having fun on canva but not we don't have to stick with it we don't have to keep all of it um I understand what she said in the ass today it looks like she changed up we could take that out um but yeah just the main idea here it's an eagle and that and again when we get to design and all that make sure and heard very clear it's not the bald eagle uh but but the idea that it's illegal can we combine I mean I like an ideal writing exactly that have the symbol of the mountains with the hands so instead of maybe like the Sundial or you incorporate both yeah being part of the background or the scenery of the mountains of somehow or I don't know so my suggestion my suggestion and you guys can tell me what you think um if you have an alternative idea right that might be a combination of something that we talk about today um if you could submit those and that we can vote on those next time yeah and I think I think if we can do that earlier than later for the benefit of everybody to kind of see those things in advance um you know so when we get to to voting and I think that's when those ideas start to creep up right so again just because we're on this one right now so okay everyone agree on the Aguilas now is there any input um well you know what if we've added a hint of red or is there a way to be flying over the mountains yeah those kinds of things again would help in the design part of it um once we land on something then we can definitely put that input and that and that would be super helpful again as we're starting to think about and give uh the designer some input I think that that would be helpful I mean I'm going to be honest it reminds me of Las Vegas and I'm a little like I don't know because at the same time let's say Gabrielino student also comes in like how would he feel represented and that Erasure of of like I really know people you know what I mean so that's the only thing like I totally feel you like I'm Latina and I see that in my career too but at the same time I want to take that in mind for the indigenous population of the of the land we occupy so I want to think about the way I feel how indigenous votes to you you know what I mean so I just want to be conscious that we're not erasing the folks from here just the way I don't want to be erased as a Mexican you know in the big spectrum of of the U.S so that's just my thought I'm not saying I don't like it because I you know I like Mexico I have the t-shirt and everything but it's I'm just considering uh like I really know people too so yeah please I have a comment um I just want to share a little story you know when I went through school here in ausd and this is not reflection today it's just a reflection of the climate you know and and educational recommendations and so forth I never learned about the Gabrielino people and from someone being from this city being born raised here went to all my schools here even went to Apu here I coach Our Youth and so forth I had to do the education and the classroom setting in elementary school for the teachers because the teachers weren't weren't taught that so I was the third fourth fifth grader in class having to share the history which I was still learning that I didn't really know with those teachers and having to I even dressed up in my traditional regalia and um people didn't understand but I still did it because I knew it was important and and that's the same issue we have here right how does this not erase us Gabriella knows who are here from Valley County and lower four Islands how does that not erase Us and how does this contribute to the visibility of a gabrielano person and then also too not everyone here in this community of Azusa is from the shika Aztec descent so again how does that represent them but keeping in mind that this community is predominantly Latino so that's that's something that we really do have to weigh and then you know just like you said as a governmental person I was never taught about my my identity here it happened because I had to teach it too yeah I would like to to follow up also um and you asked the question how would some specific image or representation affect us uh the actual um existence of the eagle is here and it's well celebrated that the eagle has returned to the mountains of Azusa and that eagle is a bald eagle and the bald eagle plays a very very important prevalent role in our uh tribal religion and ceremony we got evil dances is very important now the representations of the mountains I do like that because they're referred to by us as uh hisakupa is a name for the mountains but these mountains are called the mountains of Azusa so when you said proper pronunciation of the name people have been misper representing as you know first the story of us is a and the pronunciation of is it for more than 100 years it's a suksa so if we're going to get into specific pronunciations and names we'd have to start with that Asuka does mean in place of his grandmother so you do understand from a tribal perspective for us you've added Aztec to one of our most sacred names to add an eagle that is not representative an evil here is a continuation of a culture that you have to understand from California Indian perspective and that of tribes in the southwest we fought against Mexico they had an eradication um policy on us they just they wanted to extinct us so that's uh that's pretty heavy so what we're trying to do is we're trying to work here with this future mask of it at the same time when it how do we put ourselves aside you asked me a really heavy question and you said how do we fit into this well it's not about us it's about us as a high school you know we didn't begin this conversation in the 90s I took part in the 90s I was asked into it but we're trying to find that fine line where we're not erased in this conversation because while it's great to celebrate your history and your culture you have to understand how that arrived here okay so if you're asking from a trial perspective this one's difficult it is can I ask a question clarifying questions it's difficult because of this eagle or it's difficult for an eagle period three things one it's very uh Centric number two it is another eagle number three the names in spanish so for those that you aren't aware Spanish is a language predominantly spoken okay in Mexico right the main language but there's more than 50 languages spoken there um indigenous people natives don't cling to that language no more than English because these are languages that were forced Upon Us in order to eradicate California Union culture I'll just stay with California and not the other tribes our people were forced to speak Spanish that's how they were culturally castrating us we couldn't speak our language that's what they did in the mission when our people were slaves so that's introducing something else now well that the use of words in Spanish you do exist within the Danza communities and those that are holding their cultures again they're trying to do language restoration recapturing so people have to understand that Mexico only has the Spanish language because the Conquistadors came from Spain and brought that European language to North and South America it's not indigenous Spanish is the language of Spain so yeah there's a lot to it but you're asking me now to give a Gabrielle perspective I am and that's how we would view this it's it's got a lot of parts so maybe we should when we put it up for our vote we should vote on two separate things one is the name and the other as the name is equals perhaps and just to kind of give a finer point on I don't understand really quickly excuse me first you've been you've been away for a long time thank you so I'm a little confused because um I've heard different things tonight we like the unity with the hands but we don't want to lose our Our Heritage our background our our blood our culture everything who we are in identity so the unity one is difficult to accept because I'm going back because it doesn't represent gabolinos and it doesn't represent Aztecs but we want to not lose what the gabolinos are to the city and the Aztecs are to the Mexican heritage that's here so I'm having a difficult time moving forward at this point because even though we we were like oh yeah yeah we're right back where we started um so say more about that yeah so what I'm we can't lose either or but how do we bring it together that's the thing without it getting lost so because no matter what um we we've all expressed when we introduced ourselves that a lot of us here do have um indigenous backgrounds and we have Mexican backgrounds if you know and it is very important neither one is greater than the other it is very important we our parents teach us that by telling us the stories of our past by bringing it in the food that we eat and the lives that we lead and the beliefs that we have multiple beliefs one belief whatever it may be and it is ours to entrust for our future but I'm listening and it's like again there's one here that doesn't represent any of that but then if we show one that does represent it's not it it's it'll it'll it'll not it's not uh what some are looking for and then we have others that is you know I get a religious beliefs in it the faith or whatever but that was what they believed in at that time so I've just right now I'm kind of like oh my gosh I um if we vote by by if one or two people say no all of them should actually be no then because we've not been 100 in all our votes I thought the other ones were 100 but yeah um was all yeses and one abstention it wasn't a no but you know the hand was all yet yeah okay so those two right I'm kind of I don't know I've just kind of like in it it just seems to continuously get lost but who is any you know I don't know I'm just I just I just want to clarify um it's not a rebuttal it's just more so along the lines that the word Aztec name has been kept that's decided we know that and we now know that there can never be no gabrieleno connection to the name or the school itself so we're in that understanding so this isn't a debate of including gabrieleno culture symbols images objects people in the logo but it's just making sure it's culturally appropriate we're not advocating for gabrieleno inclusion in the logo or the mascot that's a completely separate theme that would have that's not on the table right now so I just wanted to clarify that so the whole committee and so everyone who's listening into YouTube right here yeah and to my knowledge um at no time during these discussions of some 23 years as any member of My Tribe or tribal representative any Clan known Clan asked for Gabrielino Congo inclusion and anytime in any part of Azusa High School's representation and it has been proposed in the past if that would be interesting to us to have that to which we said no we were not interested in any part of the mascot tribal leader and that that was not a a consideration that we had and I am providing historical cultural perspective on a living culture I am not suggesting you should or should not use but you have suggested I am giving you what I was asked to do provide my cultural response to what's being presented I'm not telling you how to vote I'm telling you sharing with you our perspective and how we think because we're not extinct and our religion is alive I have to correct on that one thing these beliefs and religions are not in the past okay so I'm providing as a Gabrielino your views thoughts of our people and then you take that knowledge and then you use that or not use that to make your decisions wow thank you um and one thing and then I know you want to see it um one thing to note is voting on this it doesn't like yes we have images that were given to us but um I think that they're still we're voting on an idea right we're not voting on set images so you know it is possible to have two different equals right the look that are two different varieties right so so perhaps more inclusive than we might imagine like even even more inclusive than than what we're matching right now right so there are possibilities so I want us to vote on the idea and not necessarily the specific images because that people can work out later yeah and to that point I think I think you answered it uh in that way that's why I specifically asked are you saying that it has to be this eagle and she said no right and so I think to your point the idea is the Eagles um but again when we're talking about design and all those kinds of things um all of that would have to be checked just like the jaguar and I think that's why you asked it because a Jaguar is represented in a lot of different ways with a lot of different regalia and jewels and things like that that may not be appropriate and so all of that before we even put the designs out we'll have to be checked and considered uh before we even say okay cool here are the options that's good so good Dana yeah and then let's go I just had a realization while I was listening to um you speak about the Aztec Aguilas and I really felt your sense of um urgency and importance in having this inclusion of the Latin Community this community in biagila the eagle itself but in Spanish um because of the underrepresentation in the whole area and in the industry that you work in I've also seen it so when I hear you I'm like yeah I get it like I totally feel that and I can feel what you're saying and I agree and I loved it in Spanish because my family is from Mexico from first generation a year and then I'm listening to Kevin and I'm listening to Nathan and I'm thinking first when you're speaking we are underrepresented and this com in the community in in the state whatever in education in different Industries and then I hear them and I think they are majorly underrepresented and so if I feel this what you're saying I can only imagine what it feels like you know for the natives so it just clicked you know I was just like oh my conditioning is so deep you know and my feelings of my community and my upbringing and my culture of course I want to be inclusive of everyone all coaches of course that's what we're here to do that's why we're here but even then I still miss like I'm hearing them and I'm still missing something and I feel like I'm now getting it and I hear what you're saying Kevin you're saying Nathan I mean you know indigenous people's day was last week I did a lot of research I was a teacher I really got to represent this it's my responsibility I went pretty deep and I've gone and I have a look for Native American indigenous um roots wisdom um history um and so I realizing how important it is this um real inclusion and respect and it's not just because oh it's you know the talk about San Gabrielino representing Representatives that are here that we're learning so much from but it's a real thing like this is this is this is real these are real lives this is just real history real generational trauma real exclusion um in our own community and I know what it feels like so um I just want to say that um I'm really glad that we have this representation here and that we are all representing and that we're all listening to each other and that we're all really trying to find something that fits everyone even outside of the community and the groups godstone Azusa High School um and so I thought what if it was like what is the the tonganing for for eagle you know maybe something like that um where we can really be exclusive just an idea we said the Aztec Eagles what would it be in the native language I don't I just I feel like there's a there's a gap that I'm really feeling is coming together and me and listening to everyone tonight so I just wanted to share that I really appreciate that too and that was my original pop and then I realized it will be the Aztec followed by a ton of a word and that is jarring to me I can't even imagine right okay uh yeah as great as that that kind of sounds the way you present it wouldn't it be a contradiction thank you I think it's just difficult but I think the difficult part is that the accent word is kept into this so that makes it a little more tricky not a little too challenging um and I wanted to share too like when we talk about Mexican tribes and Indigenous people like I feel like I mean I'm not gonna speak for them or anything like that but I just want to remind people there are a lot of different tribes in Mexico and even the my own language is not just the Maya language there's so many different types of my language so when we talk about Mexican uh tribes or indigenous identity there's so many so how can we just pinpoint to the assets and be like oh this is Mexican second um you know they also like to be called by their own indigenous name like when the whole thing um happened with LA City Hall and ojacquenos came out they're like so they have that pride of bringing in there so if something someone from Oaxaca would be coming here this would not be representative of them you know what I mean so they have their own social support you know like there's so many different people that also are Mexican or Latinos and have their own indigenous identity and acid does not represent them unfortunately you know so that's another thing that we have to take in mind that if we are going to say Mexican like it's not just African lion and so how can someone because it's uh so many so many like that 60 you said right so I'm saying as assets or representative Mexicans because that's not true so I think we suggested this point I think there's a two-part number one do we move the eagle not this Eagle but the culturally appropriate representation of an eagle which we could get into questions and then if it moves forward then the Azusa High School asset with the Eagles or this was a high school Azusa High School Aztecs with the Aguilas and so that would be the second vote so the first one has nothing to do with the agila it's just the eagle just like we did with the Jaguar just like we did with the hands just the eagle and just as a reminder everyone this is not about whether you like it or not right this is just about based on our criteria do we feel like it of the criteria enough yeah all right so those are you in favor of moving forward and Eagle uh to be considered again that Misa Craig's here this is not I like it or don't like it that has nothing to do with it but what you think about it is just doesn't meet the criteria and those who uh have not that are you obstaining or are you saying no I'm still thinking about it I'm just saying it doesn't meet our criteria I think so I think we would have to let we're gonna go back to square one again what can you say more what do we have to find out I think just because like like they said it's the eagle itself thinking about the ego they're talking about the feather there's gonna have to be feathers in there so are we representing them wrong by saying if we put letters and we decide on obviously it's just an idea but eventually when it's put in there and somebody wants to represent it again it's not to you know to hurt you guys or say hey we just threw it up and we didn't even consider it again you know what I mean that's um that's my I feel like there's so many things to it that'll be we might not see it but it still could be a little offense and again we have to put rail guards on that yeah right sorry no no I'm saying there have to be real guards on that and go ahead and I I mean I think it's important I mean I appreciate that you're being had I think that's fantastic um I think it's important that we vote just on the idea though not on like what might happen if X Y and Z because I I do think we can create parameters right as we think through these things and they are important think they're you're totally right about that um but my same as with the gender yes for all these things we're going to have to think through you know parameters and how they can be implemented in a way that doesn't lead to that unintentional yeah all right so will this committee then litigate at like the next meeting is what those parameters and what that specifically could look like in terms of the logo or what we have looked at today and will be put forward would that happen is that what the committee is going to look at is the committee going to make that decision I think and again we're just brainstorming here this is live uh as we go through I think that um the first part again let's pretend we like the idea of an eagle I I think there's opportunity for either this company this this community or others what we do know for sure is that whether it's the Jaguars the hands the Eagles or whatever we decide it doesn't matter um there's gonna have to be some level of saying okay well this is where we landed um here's some here's some ideas and again have guardrails against that I don't think that that's part of our first job I think I think that's part of the second piece and I think we have to be committed to that because I'm going to assume and these are just massive assumptions that whoever the designer was of the mascot right now right I thought that that was okay um and so we don't want to make assumptions of what's okay or what's not okay we want to make sure that where we land whether that's again legal Jaguar whatever that is uh that it's going to fit and then furthermore some of the things that we have been talking about here now the ceremonies and all that that comes with it uh as well and that education and knowing uh how we're doing those things so I think this group said that if one person said no then it wasn't enough is that where we're at one person says you're coming I'm just one person okay uh raise your half you'd like to move the ego forward for consideration I think he's voting up the question of majority of tools oh this is you name this is that right I'm sorry no no I'm just saying asking if we can reboot again that's all I'm asking okay go to move forward okay so raise your hand if we're okay moving the ego forward for consideration okay all right so just a quick recap and I so apologize that we are way beyond our time um right now we have two ideas moving forward so first idea is a jaguar and the second idea is the mountains slash the uh hands so those are the two that are moving forward right now um we're going to flee that if you have ideas to please please please submit them way before Monday so that we all find ourselves on Monday to have us to restart you know where we left off right now if there are no other ideas and that's fine we're going to deal with these two moving forward and that's perfectly okay three that was three am I wrong no oh no no no just the eight the hand the Mountain's hand yeah right yeah okay I'm just confused and not like in a angry but how um the Jaguar was on hold off the equal because of the feathers well no no I mean you're the one who said no to it meaning criteria because I kind of sent to the Jaguar I wasn't against it but I wasn't opposed to it so that that was my yeah because I'm like I can't see it you know I don't I I get what it stands for I just don't see it so that's why I didn't have anything else attached to it the only one the only thing was the eagle yeah for me it was just just to be able to represent it right and not sort of come back to the same thing like what about this what about that's offensive that's my reason okay um so the idea again is again don't feel you have to right oh my gosh I have to come up submission but if you do again we'll follow up with the summary email uh to please have that in like as soon as possible so everybody can see it and understand it so when we come on Monday there's already some some thought behind that uh because ideally on Monday if these are the two um or 2.3 or 2.5 yeah no no that's that's fine to some kind of process to then decide okay which one and then we can have a conversation about what we want to see so if it's the Jaguar as an example like what we would want to see through the Jaguar if it's the hands what we would want to see through the hat and so that way again that gives us a lot of good powerful information to then try to synthesize all of that in something graphic that that captures that that would be the most ideal um so thank you again we kept you longer than we should so we apologize for that uh what did I miss you got it off all right thank you everyone really appreciate your in your time have a good evening because
