Yeah. [Applause] Uh, hi. My name is Riley Spears. I'm here with our head basketball coach, Mr. Simpson. Uh, I've just got a couple of questions to ask you about the upcoming season. Ask away. Uh, how do you feel about the upcoming basketball season? Uh, really excited about it. We've got a tremendous group this year. Got a lot of youth and inexperience, but it's inexperienced that's got talent. We they are a group that um shows up every day ready to work and get better. And it's a group that you can tell truly enjoys playing together, which I think is gonna play well into the success that we have this year because they all get along so well and that translates into success on the floor, too. All right. Um tell me about some of the uh returning players that we have this year. Okay. We start with uh a senior Sarah Stap and then junior Carly Adams.
And from there, we have uh I don't want to miss anybody. We've got four sophomores, uh Leah West, Kayla Tam, and Emma McQueen. And then a fourth sophomore, Miley Wilkinson will unfortunately miss most if not all of this season with a knee injury, but only being a sophomore. We hope that uh she's able to bounce back and continue with the success that she had her freshman year. Um looking at the schedule, what do you think will be some good games to watch this year? Well, all of them, of course, but I'm biased. But, um, uh, we we play an incredibly tough schedule for our area. We've got a bunch of 4A teams on our schedule. We know of at least three teams that have missed basketball candidates on their roster. Uh, one that's fairly close is Josie Treyel at East Central. She's a senior and um she will be playing division 1 basketball and she is going to be a candidate for miss basketball.
Just here in a couple of weeks we will travel to Jennings County. They have a junior Julian Woodard who will be an Indiana all-star Miss Basketball candidate. And then we play new PAL possibly twice this year and they have a senior point guard who will be uh in the conversation at least for Miss Basketball and multiple other 4A teams up and down the schedule. And then even some of the smaller schools we play year in and year out have a lot of returning people and they they've got a tradition of success. You know, we play Jacksonell to open the season this coming Friday and they've won a state title in the last 5 years. So, even though at they are at the 1A level, team that always is a great way for us to start. All right. Well, that's all we've got for you, coach.
Thank you for your time. Hey, anytime. Welcome to Greensburg High School for the girls basketball match up between the Lady Pirates versus the Lady Eagles. I'm Sam West here with Kai Dyer. Kai, what do you know about this team? How you guys doing tonight? Uh, Jacksonell looks like a solid team. Uh, Greensburg, we got one returning senior, U Sarah Stap. She's already proven that experience. Reigns superior as she's been very vocal in practice, showing underclass in the robes. Her leadership skills will probably help keep the Pirates poised. Sam, what else we got from the Lady Pirates? Uh, I think overall they're just a really young team. Uh, so we'll have to see how they gel here in this first game. I agree. What do you know about these Lady Eagles? Uh, honestly, not much. Um, I know that they have I think their best player is Reagan Hughes, number 24.
And although I think they lost a couple seniors last year, so I think also their team is pretty young, so should be a pretty match, pretty good matchup. Uh, we will step away here for the national anthem. We shall be back. [Applause] and your Greensburg Lady Pirates. In the spirit of sport, we ask that all fans act responsibly and courteously to those around you. Abusive language or disorderly conduct is unacceptable and unwelcomed at IHSAA events. Let's floor the student athletes, coaches, officials, and your fellow fans the respect they deserve. Your cooperation is appreciated. Now, if you would please rise and remove your hats as seniors Kylie Simpson and Macy Smith sing our national anthem. Can you see by the dawn early so proudly we held at the twilight stripes and bright stars through the [Music] fight or the [Music] Gently [Music] bursting in prole [Music] for the land of the home of the brave.
[Applause] Welcome back. Number 24. Currently meeting our Jacksonell Lady Eagles starters. Number 22, Julia Meyer. The Lady Eagles are coached by Scott Smith. Focus on the fundamentals. Most important winning behind my book, we're going to be winners. [Music] All right, congregation on your feet. It's the noise inside the starting line for your lady. Starting over 61 sophomore number 42 [Applause] junior number 44. Number 12 starting at car 5.6man Sixman number 14. Another part of fire number 202. [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] And we are underway here to get this game started. You guys heard the starters for both squads. Looks like Leo West is set to tip off for the Greensboro Pirates and number 32 Kayn Hers for for Jackson Dell. And like we said, Jacksonell is also a young team. They have one senior. That is it. Number 40. And the Lady Pirates will retrieve the ball.
[Applause] Looks like uh the Eagles are in a half court pressure. Adams in the corner for three. It's off the mark. Leah West at the top and she travels. [Applause] We got to get her under control soon. So Pirates get offensive rebound and turn it over right away. It's not how you want to start a game. Emma McQueen up pressing as the Lady Eagles bring the ball up. Very good defense. Maybe a 5-second count. And it is turnover Lady Eagles. [Applause] Eagles are still in a half court press. Mary Harmon bringing up the ball. Adams in the corner. Back to Harmon at the top over to McQueen. Leah West working on the post. Puts it up and it's off the mark. Red Eagles pushing the ball and a good block. That's the freshman Alli Powers and the Eagles will take it out underneath their own basket.
[Music] close to not getting the ball in. Turning it over and McQueen still very good defense out of bounds. Lady Pirates ball. Mary Harmon set to bring the ball up. Eagles again with somewhat of a half court pressure. Leah West gets to the post. Euro step left hand. Basket by West. That's a good move by Leo West. Eagles pushing the ball up the floor. Almost throw it away. [Applause] Mary Hman forces a jump ball and the Eagles will inbound the ball underneath their own basket once again. They get it into the post [Applause] and Leah West and one. What a move by Leah West. That was a great pass great pass by I believe 14 Mary Harmon finished through contact West last year was a 45% or excuse me 52% free throw shooter. Eagles sub number 20 and Sophia Sophia Sullivan she's on the floor now.
Reagan Hughes bringing up the ball. Eagles working the ball around the three-point line. Very good pressure by the Lady Pir Pirates so far. [Applause] Lady Pirates now pushing the ball. Good pass, good kick out and off the mark for Mayor Harmon. [Applause] Some great hustle by Emily McQueen there. And it it is the Eagles ball. [Music] Looks like a 30 second timeout will be called by the Eagles. 4-0 Pirates have the lead so far. Sam, what do you think the Eagles need to do better? Um, I think probably just keep up the uh intensity. Uh, I think the way the Eagles will win is just in a sloppy game like it's been getting turnovers. I agree. And I'd say the opposite for the Pirates. They need to control the ball and have a clean offense. I agree too. Eagles uh if they keep pushing the ball like they are and back the Pirates up, they should be just fine.
But great defense so far by the Pirates. A lot of pressure and force some key turnovers here early in the game. Number 22, Julia Meyer set to take the ball out here. And then McQueen applying pressure. Eagles working the ball around. Still great pressure by the Pirates. Almost forced a jump ball there. Pull up three. Wet. [Applause] That's a nice three-point basket off the dribble there by the late Eagles. Harmon bringing the ball up. Kicks it to Powers and Carly Adams will take a three in the corner and off the mark. Leah West with the offensive rebound. And what a move. Good post move. I don't think Coach Simpson's going to be complaining about Carly Adams three-point shot. Her three-point shot was not terrible last year. Her field goal percentage was uh 46.7. So, not bad. And her three-point percentage is 33%. That's pretty good three-point.
Eagles set to take the ball out on the side. 14. Uh, would be an offensive illegal screen, I guess. Foul number 40, Olivia Neil. Her first team second. And the Eagles in a threequarter court press gets it to Leah. Kicks it out to McQueen in the corner. Great pass. Wide open three and shot. Great ball movement by the Pirates. That's exactly what they need to do. Get the ball middle of the floor and then kick opposite. Yeah, if they can do that off the mark from the Eagles. 14. Kelsey Bergman chucks up a layup. Pirates slowing it down a little bit. Well said. Kind of in a pickle here. They drive it to the corner. That's not what you want to do in a press like this. Eagles almost forced a turnover. Eagles, I believe, are in a half court kind of zone defense. Savannah Steel comes in for Olivia Neil.
I think the key for the Pirates here is get the ball to the middle of the floor. Draw the double team in the middle and kick it out for a wide open three. Again, number four, who just came in for the Eagles, also a sophomore, so also the bench is young. And that'll be a travel by Leah West. Travel. Got the ball to the middle floor. Leah just can't travel. McQueen with the one-on-one pressure once again. And number 24 Reagan Hughes with a move to drop McQueen and get to the basket for a foul. She will shoot two free throws. 42 West her first team. That was a good move. Got to the basket, drew a foul. First free throw is up and it is good. Hughes 58 Jr. seems to be kind of the leader of this team indeed. Number 22 Alif Powers bringing the ball up.
Almost forces a turnover. working the ball around. Eagles still in the press. Kicks at the corner. Mary Hardman. Oh, another good pass. Carly Adams. Good shot. That's exactly what the Pirates need to do. Get the ball the middle four and kick it out. Nope. Move the ball like that. Leg close out. Drive to the middle and kick. Perfect. Ev McQueen still applying pressure here. [Music] Oh, and that'll be a travel by number four for the Eagles. Number 32, Kayn back in the Eagles. 32 Kayn Hunters in for the game. Subs in for number 14, Kelsey Borgman. Also a sophomore. She will sit. Hearts working the ball around early. Get it to the middle of the floor and Leah West gets fouled. Leo will get fouled on the floor. She's driving the ball to the basket. And that'll be on the floor though. Julia, her second team's third.
Maned to Lee in the post. Also another good move and an easy bucket. Basket by West. Eagles pushing the ball up straight out of the giggle. Another spin move by number 24 Hughes. chucks up a layup and gets blocked. [Music] Leo West another bucket and forces a Jackson Bell timeout. That'll be a timeout by the Eagles. That is another 30 second timeout. And I think you can't leave Leah one open one-on-one in the post. Yeah, Eagles need to get back on defense. They're forcing turnovers on the offensive side and then just not spring back and it's an easy bucket for the Lady Pirates. I think the the Pirates are doing a really good job of kind of defeating that that zone defense and uh kind of seems like they're just the Eagles on offense are doing just a lot of one-on-one. Yeah, I think the pressure by the Lady Pirates is getting them to do that which is exactly where they want them.
So, great job by the Pirates. Yeah, the Pirates in a man man offense or man defense. [Music] And McQueen set to apply more pressure here as the Lady Eagles take out the basketball. 1650 with about 3 minutes left in the first quarter. Jacksonville with three fouls. Lady Pirates with two fouls. So we got fouls to give. And a great help defense by Alli Powers. She's going to take it and push the floor out. Pirates are going to slow down kind of here. Cars another three. Yeah. Off the mark and that'll be off the Eagles Pirates basketball. Great job by Leah getting the tip in there and then forcing the Eagles to hit it out of bounds. We got number 10 Carmen in for your Pirates in for um Emma McQueen. Inbound to Ali Pir. She misses it. Leah West, great board, jump ball. It'll be Pirates basketball.
I think it's kind of clear that the Pirates have a size advantage here. Kind of dominating the post right now. Mary Harmon off the marks from three. Another offensive rebound for the Pirates and a foul. I believe Carmen Thcker will shoot three [Applause] number Sophia Sullivan for first team. Jacksonell fourth foul Carmen Zachary a freshman and hits the first one. And Carmen drains a second. She'll have one more. [Applause] Sarah Stap will come in for Leah West. Leah West has had a great start to her this basketball game. Yeah, she'll take a seat and I'm sure she'll be uh right back into the game. Just a quick breather. And Carmen attacker hits the third free throw. Eagles doing a great job pushing the ball, but Pirates defense oh points per game last year as a freshman. So she led all the Pirates in scoring and she was also voted as an all EIAC uh player freshman.
So that was definitely a big loss. She's very athletic, very quick, very aggressive. But as of now, the Pirates seem seem to not have a problem without her. I think they're doing a great job. So again, great pressure by the Pirates. And another steal. Carly Adams knocks it away. And Mary Harmon will take the ball up the floor. Kick it to Adams. Back out to West. Fast kick. Almost knocked away. And the Pirates will slow down. Get in his own offense. Kick out to a three. Carmen Zachary off the mark. Leo West with the offensive rebound. Mary Harmon three. No good. I think that is her second three of the night as she misses it again. I think she just need to keep shooting. See one falls. I mean that's not a bad shot off an offensive rebound. Wide open shot. Oh yeah. Just couldn't come up with it that time.
