[Music] Jesus Christ [Music] phone call Teresa present Rachel here Michelle here okay Pilates yeah Lauren here Bridget here Julie here Ralph president Albert Luisa here Spotlight your school Park Avenue I think we have a few uh thank you everybody for doing this uh it's so nice to be in person um one of the things that we're doing this year is we're having our big family meetings in the gym and it's so nice to be in person when we got the word that we were going to Spotlight our school maybe it was a few weeks ago we said oh it's a great idea I said here's how we're going to Spotlight our school we're going to have the students come up with how what Park Avenue means to them you know it's just basically it's a real simple presentation tonight just what does Park Avenue mean to them so with that on two first grade teachers went to the fifth grade and they filled out these little slips about in one word how would you describe Park Avenue School and that's where these posters were created from and their wine is pretty neat in there it says joyful organized chaos that's like that's like me that is just me right there I'm telling you you know what I'm saying which is which I'm laughing at you know not really sure if that the way a book was in there but I thought that was kind of cute we put that together on the hard uh uh there were some students who um many students who um submitted and wanted to you know come to the Board of Ed tonight to speak about their school and this is all about them we also have two other um we have two um staff members that are going to speak as well so you know with me if you give me a microphone I talk forever so I'm going to try to stay away from the microphone but what I would like is that our students could please come here which uh we'll come up and we'll get you one at a time we'll make sure that uh this microphone works they are a little nervous what do we have to do here lock s and oh that's good oh sorry oh this is pretty fun when they read this and we were just listening to them you can really see a theme in there and it emulates through the building and the reason why that happens is because the staff follows through we have an Incredibles out there who really care about children and also care about doing a lot of feedback there but they listen to the message and they give the message to the kids and we even hear messages from the kids as well and you can hear it anyway so of their speeches every one of you for doing it so let's go first so we're gonna have you we will have Natalie door you come up first and you can sit here and we'll set you up so we'll make sure and so anytime you're ready go ahead okay all right speak to the mic good afternoon my name is [Music] Fidelity means to me a second home oh out of five reasons why an animal isn't great one I kind of have super kind teachers to a grand funimus practical school that has a great has great principles for super fun learning honest five special and special teachers you need to thank all the teachers there for teaching each year all the students with kindness lovers pack and Harry Potter and again we love her cavities sincerely Sofia I'm standing including my name is the challenge and today I'm going to be reading what part happened have you ever been in a school that goes here if you like I am here to tell you that that program is the best school because teachers are working hard kids and teachers kindness and everyone one reason the Water Park Avenue is the best is because teachers are some examples how teachers are hard working our kids are having any time working teachers tell their students to try their best and second reason why Park Avenue is because people share kindness some examples how people share pieism in my Revenue are kids saying be my test thank you please also we have we can do small access and you will be so proud of yourself with just a small active times finally the last reason why my family is the best everyone is very supportive some reason has demands and staff Ord who are almost there this was far for families which we thank you and have a good night [Laughter] [Music] um good evening my name is Park Avenue the place where people come to learn although you might not think it this place is great do you mind your wife let me tell you there's so many great things that are so many things that are great about the school to the concerts the holidays the age countdown family meeting the friendships have fallen from future students to washroom there's always at least one thing that shows a shine teachers are in the school are amazing they are respectful to students and pretty fun for example sometimes we do want to be able to ask and we have lots of fun but it also Park Avenue is a great School in okay [Music] Park Avenue is special to me because it feels like one big family the teacher sounds really nice if you could also comfort you and it also feels like a big family because every day and sometimes your friends can act like this one sometimes your classmates can be annoying or caring and funny also in Park Avenue all those teachers are really caring our principal Mr Crawford everything to make this school great and this is why I love her family in school thank you for your time I told her to write that part well I love about Park Avenue School is that when I lose from New York and we went to the school I felt welcome it was really it was easy to make friends because everyone was really hot hot really hi the teachers and the principal are also really nice they do their best at making our resources fun and safe I love taking the bus because bus drivers so forth and that's what I love about my school about this stuff do your Valentine Grace while Park Avenue need to be um it would help me learn how to do math ESL house place and special my favorite official is German art because disneyworld.com or you learn how to draw just like Pokemon and the floor is here you might not know what you're supposed to do so you can talk in your heart like always and if you see me I will walk up to them and say what's happening and they say nothing to do if something um okay and then give them how that makes them feel good this is why I love my family's store each and one of them loves each other thank you [Music] she has no cards my name is Camila Perez and I'm gonna be representing what um fourth grade is in Park Avenue is fourth grade represents looking out for each of you know like being on ten percent the other salary tells the child sounds but we're all American Girl from those days if you have a you're going to think you never hear you but it's not like that your brain is telling you negative things can't believe are never going to do that we just kind of threw up in the world anymore but that doesn't stop you from people's heartbreaking the first period is awesome here now there's five reasons why Park Avenue [Music] because it's always certain point why because when people welcome you at school saying hi finally I would not know what I would do without this one reason why people are so good thankful for what they have it's because her lovely administrator 's Mr Patrick and Mrs Johnson their reason why is Park Avenue the third reason why is all of the teachers are very helpful funny kind of entering and for an example in this picture she's my teacher when we have wrong persons she always tries to make it fun if she did not travel and get fun so bored find the reason everybody has a good concert must be because nobody gives up and everybody crashes to the challenge which is good with pizza everyone is so supportive they care about what decision to make like the biggest hit it's small like whether you like something or not those were all the reasons why I do is special to me thank you for your time [Music] I'm here to escape and my name is Jason salsa I have only been at work now but also since the start of this group I have a great teacher of amazing classmates I've made friends Clipper and lovers that I would last year was kind of hard for food since not all kids wanted though if our government made a lot of time so I could relate to my family of course when I put some kids who have not really like me but not everyone's gonna like you it's also been my first year on a bus it has been really great the kids don't know the bus are Believe coming even though they have never met me Mr Lima has been my favorite teacher I thought it was all over when I was thought I was moving schools I thought I was gonna lose all my friends but Mr Randall showed me that not all teachers are going to sit there and tell you to remember this and that it was picked you don't remember and accomplished it on the next day if I was asked to describe foreign [Music] and getting ready but things have changed and stuff because sometimes I I must fall off my bed because of how excited I am to go on the bus and go to my class and see my teacher at my friends I already love our gathering my mother friend me this year so much hello my name is caring I've been going to Park Avenue since I was in kindergarten another of all my teachers all the teachers in Park Ave are like family to me and I love my family I stopped being scared on the first day and food grade because I knew there was nothing to worry about other people in this school also helped me people who took me doing lunch because people are wearing this blue and Misty is Miss blue has been with me since the first grade sadly she left to go to work at another school I hope she likes that job and has fun now has fun now this year I have this DS we are having a fun time this year like all the other years I'm going to tell you about my teachers in kindergarten I have a skunk in first grade I had mystery educational he's a fifth grade teacher in second grade I have Miss koi now she's teaching first grade in third grade I had this great well now she teaches simple fourth grade I have Krista she still teaches fourth grade now finally this year I have Mr Wonderful I love all my teachers the school makes me think apart like I have my friends and first grade teacher taught me how to add my second free teacher taught me how to spell huge words my third grade teacher taught me how to multiply my fourth grade teacher taught me um how to divide my fifth grade teacher taught me how to solve the duplicate she was standing algorithm taught me a lot in that in that Italian here this is where I think the park cab is home I've been here for six years now like five minutes I can't believe I'm already I have a lot of memory it's like my home when I leave there will be lots of Tears because that was my movie Set we did crazy experiments in fifth grade our first everyone was flying like dirt now it was Mountain signs again before this my teachers fishing up what happens if you boil they're in water I've never been answered before there was another experiment where we boiled water and sugar and and it smells like cereal it tasted it it tasted sweet that was my favorite I think I'm a science camera I love all my special teachers my favorite special is legit horses our gym teacher is Mr hot top our community basic features Mr Garmin our art teachers Miss patella in our media teacher of an extension room he was the second grade teacher all the adults at Park Ave are number one that we sing in our song every morning our Gap will always be my second book thank you for your time I really appreciate it hello my name is Katie or gentles today I'll be talking [Music] Chicago Avenue and your social basically it's kind and murdered and all of my years of being in heart failure I wouldn't ask to be anywhere else the teachers on Park Avenue are unpredictable nice and kind they make money easier and fun plus the projects they give you are super fun and creative in the morning we have a beautiful song that represents so many staff at work in Beloved we also announced kids birthdays over the loudspeaker and teachers make your birthday fun and special and our friends of holistic traffic is different money and super welcoming and kind thank you you must be enough to read tonight you know I'll get back thank you and you know what they wrote just warms my heart and it resonates family home caring kindness everything that we talk about and that the teachers do every single day it's amazing we just have two more people to present and I'm sorry if we went a little longer than we were supposed to but like I said if you give me the microphone it's gonna be long all right so if I could have uh Miss Lucia guardato come up here please Lucia was Park Avenue selection for uh teacher of the year so we've asked her to say a few words if she will so thank you hello I don't know if I can beat that but yeah um I have written talking about after that I just have to speak from the heart Avenue to me is an inspiration I came from and my dream was always to the Future I'm walking poverty like a lot of people go down there and my mom taught me the best that she could although that is on the alphabet and when I saw how much she had taught me I decided I wanted to be a teacher I worked really hard and became a foreign but it was hard I had a lot of heart and all that um because I had to learn the language and I had two sons eventually your time who attended Park had in his school one was not a teacher a family as well [Music] and being at Park Avenue as a parent walking down those hallways watching the teachers teach being the excitement or mark on the wall it brought back all that inspiration and that desire and with the desire I put myself back in school and I became a teacher I had my school teaching going to our family school so what does Park Avenue School mean to me inspiration a dream come true I get to work with excellent excellent teachers they're superheroes they inspire me every day to become another person and amazing children who also come to this country with the dream just like mine and I have the privilege of teaching them very much but I wasn't gonna cry tonight you know I haven't cried in a while you know but that's amazing I think I got emotional last night remember the movies and the popcorn and all that stuff all right I know all right so our last speaker tonight but before we introduce this person I just want to explain I apologize for not wearing a shirt and tie today's Argyle date every Wednesday is Argyle Wednesday so we have Argyle here Argyle there and it's kind of argyle here I got everywhere there are some kids who come to our school who don't know who um who don't haven't acquired the English language yet but they do know the word Argyle which is great it was started Years Ago by Ian and myself by accident and uh which at a family need you know we we call our meetings family meetings like a lot of people do and you can see how it resonates through the kids and it is their home away from home to take care of your home you know so and you can see that the teachers really do the work because it resonates when I read these I was just blown away by them so this other person that I'd like to highlight a little bit to um tonight just came to us last year and she's a godsend like she is just but exercise together so don't get emotions and everything about that so um the impact that this woman has made in our building in the short amount of times spectacular so I needed her to pick up the tough tonight so this is Diana ringles to use our current liaison and Hallelujah for the paliadisms let me tell you thank you board members I think we are can we do that one more time they're the reason why we get up and sometimes I got up and I turn around and I'm looking for my hip now I'm looking for something from how hard it is but I I'm I'm moved so much when I first came to the school I'm literally uh studying in New York and even when I was young the schools were not what they were today and it was literally an impossibility man I was just like oh you said that [Music] sorry so so basically it was very difficult to even see or stand same people like me or even get to the principle there were lies and lies and lies it was just very different back in the 70s and 80s okay um so when I come to school now when I first came through these doors and I'm going to make a quick short as I can I saw a big sign and I share this with Mr craft it's the kindness I was expecting to see it's elastic you know the Box there's no kindness and the first thing in my head was I want to know who the hell is everybody else in the but I want to know who the hell is because if your head is good your body is good you might have to you know move some receptions in and straighten out some stuff like if your head is good it's gonna wiggle down oh my gosh so when I sat with him and I laughed I said what's his kindness fast forward and the announcements in the morning that's what I hear I'm going to review this real quickly he's but this is what he says in the morning can I put this up a little bit so in the morning he says when he's with your announcements he says please be kind respectful and responsible and then he sort of goes into a little by little what that means what it what it means when he says that so I looked up kindness and it says kindness is just not being kind there's also movement in that so it says kindness is even done being done when you do something kind to someone you know doing something letting them go past you you know helping them with their books doing something is also an act what you do so every morning I hear him say that and here's the thing that I really believe in my girls have left the mess some of the members you know who my my daughter's my daughter is the other one is one they're all teachers but one is an accountant she's gone but one of the things that I saw in the school in consistency is that it's very consistent it's what he says and what I see it just goes on it you know I mean there isn't a resonance that he said but but it goes on there's no breaking it's just consistent which is good and what we need so the world is shouting out constantly to our kids with social media they're telling them tell you do it now go after it we're gonna meet you know we'll punch them we're gonna meet you outside let's get even we need to be consistent talking all the time saying the same thing fighting in a positive way kindness so I believe kindness and I just saw this not that I think but I do believe but I saw this kindness makes you the most beautiful person in the world no matter what you look like specifications and he says and they also what he says he talks about respect all the time he does to respect and your children can learn respect says respect to matter to Reverend to consider to admire to show regard consideration respect for one's differences and culture he also talks about responsibility teaches the children to be used to disorder to step and survival certain things in order to say no to set limits to set expectations these are all what he talks about in the morning it's simple I said oh my gosh I love it I've never heard that movie so I'm gonna leave you with this the pessimist who voting everything every opportunity for The Optimist sees opportunity in every difficulty and then Herman Munster Happy Days you don't have an answer says the lesson I want now he's talking to his son the lesson I want you to learn is this that it doesn't matter what you look like it doesn't matter how tall how short how fat how thin how ugly or handsome like your father says you are what you can be black or yellow or white it does not matter what matters starting to be hard and so we're hoping to build it too as we engage with the snacks generation we're running with the torch or the ones who are going to build and establish the missionaries that we also not only are working their Logistics to build a raise and to go and to become our next leaders who are also a camera to go home so you can see the impact she has in this room the impact she has with our families are just incredible the way she reaches out she holds people accountable she helps people she's incredibly kind and she's incredibly smart and we are lucky to have you so great job everybody so emotional I'm sorry if we took a little longer than we were supposed to but that was our presentation for tonight and uh please feel free to come by Park Avenue School anytime you want and we will let you in town thank you everybody I appreciate it thank you thank you great job all the family who came out today [Music] thank you [Music] I brought my own a second all in favor aye I'm motion carries four to zero eight point two discussion and consideration of approval of supplemental curriculum materials for the CMS careers and your future course okay as Mr scroggin to come up real quick and give a few words about that quick quick I'm just kidding all right so these are these are uh two different um platforms that are available to our uh career exploration students at the middle school um pigby is a free uh platform that students can um watch a video or it could either be live or it could be record a video of somebody from the industry um they're able to submit uh electronically some questions for follow-up and in the following week that that individual from industry will respond to many of the questions um so it's just a very simple platform that our teacher can use on a weekly basis and then um Define careers uh is a little bit more extensive it's a project-based learning platform so students can go in and explore careers each of the projects takes anywhere from three to five days to complete so they really dive in a little bit more deep into possible Pathways and there's a cost to that uh 1260 dollars in that we are using with our CT funds to to support career Recreation any questions for him sounds good all right take a motion I moved to approve the supplemental course materials for the Middle School careers in your future course as presented second all in favor hi I'm motion carries four to zero eight point three discussion consideration approval of the 2023 support staff salary schedule Madam president board members Dr Wyman as you know on November 2016 ballot there was initiative to raise the minimum wage in Arizona to 12 dollars per hour in 2020 and in addition the proposition required the minimum wage to increase on January 1st of each subsequent year by the cost of living increase the cost of living increase was determined by proposition 206 or the upcoming year and it is over 8.3 percent resulting in an increase in the minimum wage of uh from to 1280 to 1386 purpose of this agenda item is to recommend the required increase be applied for the hourly salaries of the district there are two possible methods for increasing the salary the first method is there listed for you to provide the same increase for all staff members this would result in a dollar raise for every classified staff member and this option would compress the salary schedule since the increase from the percentage basis would be greater than the individuals who make less money the anticipated cost of this increase of the Year budget is 258 951 31 cents and the cost for the full year is anticipated at 517 900261.

the second option is to provide a percentage increase based on the current salary schedule this salary schedule was built on three bands and you can see the numbers there we recommend the administration recommends option one last year the increase in inflation which almost doubled The increased school districts received for their budgets for the year resulted in the district making the change for support staff increases to run from January to December the increase last this year the highest increase since the initiative was implemented will result in the recommendation to continue this practice and so we're looking at the same as we've done in the year before the cost of the increase for the final six months of the current budget is 258 951.31 cents which includes the additional cost of the benefits this increase will result on the average increase of the supporting staff of 7.33 there are some subsequent documents there for you to review and we're looking that we our recommendation is that the administration from the administration's option did you say that it was going to compress the salary schedule yes yes not not tremendously we spent we spent uh the last three years so trying to decompose right right decompress it right right and so we we worked on decompressing but the issue that's at hand at an 8.3 increase is the cost of 1.2 million dollars on an annual basis is not sustainable and so your option is to put an unsustainable raise to not compress it or slightly compress it because that's all it can be afforded at this time in a normal year you would probably see an increase of two or three percent in which case you can distribute that across the salary schedule the way we have in the past with this kind of increase it is just too much therefore we had to go with this other option the other thing that we will talk about and I've talked about the last couple years is depending on any number of issues it will if you just always do it the other way then you're going to stretch the thing out too far so you'll you'll probably over the course of time some years do it this way and compress a little bit other years stretch out and and the the exciting Factor will probably be the total cost relative to what the anticipated increase I will tell you based on any number of factors um just as a heads up for next spring I would not anticipate uh that we will be meeting this same increase range for everybody else just based on where it looks like the the budget's going to go and so each year you have to address it as a new way or address it in the way that is reflective of what the dollars are one of the things with the support staff however is because it's state statute or the minimum wage we got to do what we got to do and it's 8.3 at one point this year it looked like the increase on inflation would be over 10 percent and so as it was last year we thought it was huge at five percent and we saw over three percent increase on that um so there's just no other options so I just but I wanted to make sure that everybody understood there will be a slight compression not nearly what happened before because you were you were taking off rows and you really compressed it but there will be a slight compression and that's just we have no other option to be you know from my opinion and from Julie's opinion financially we have no other option as a result this compression enough in the next budget year are we going to work to be compress and or how how's that going to work going forward well a lot it's it's hard to answer that question for next year because um you won't start to see what what the impact of inflation is uh they do their first analysis um in August and so if if you're coming back in an 8.3 percent increase again then my answer would be no if you come back with the more traditional I'll just say two percent give or take a little bit uh the answer will be maybe and that's only because until we figure out what the state budget is uh from the legislature so remember we're when we get our budget in the spring we're taking our certified staff our administrators and support exempt and we're trying to figure out their increase from July 1 to June 30th and then projecting without any numbers what might happen in January so we we try to anticipate that the reason we switched to January is we two three years ago we built in the extra money starting in July but these last two years have been so high and so it may be but maybe not and until we know what that inflation number is if it's normal last few years of two percent then I would think we could probably go back to the old way but if it stays up at five to eight percent uh they're not going to give us that much money at the state level I don't think maybe I'll be surprised but but I don't anticipate that so so we may have some other issues we have to deal with so that was going to be my next question in terms of the budget for this year we did not get 8.3 money in order to accommodate this I just want to be sure right no and and as we so we're fully aware that we had anticipated an increase but not not that um uh and then we are also taking a look and addressing the issue of of uh the loss of 200 students when we come to you in in December uh we will have answers to the concerns about the loss of students we've been working on it for the last two months and so I'm I'm okay with that issue I'm delaying and the reason we did not bring this to this month's meeting um the uh a revised budget is because we still have that AAL issue that's hanging on the aggregate expenditure limit um and now that the election's over we'll we'll just see what happens I would hope by um the 14th we would have an answer on that issue um good or bad we'll have an answer and that that creates a different issue and so we're just trying to address the financial issues in one Fell Swoop which we may or may not be able to do next December but I mean next month but we did push it out a month in hopes that we could do both but I can tell you from from the budgetary standpoint for the loss of students and the increase to support staff we will be able to handle that within the budget AEL different issue will tackle depending on what happened do you have any other questions I have one more question um do you how is this the last thing that we have to do for minimum wage or is there another bump I believe there's how many there's a bump every single year every single year till we don't know yeah right right now the way this remember when initiative is passed in the state of Arizona you cannot change the initiative unless it furthers the the intent of the initial initiative so if the initial initiative was to give an increase in minimum wage you will never be able to make a change unless you get a two-thirds vote at the legislature which isn't going to happen you go ahead and do anything less than continue to give raises I think at some point someone's going to say holy smokes the the minimum wage is thirty dollars an hour so they're going to have to come up with some solution but the way initiatives are written right now you cannot change the initiative unless it's a furtherance of what the initial intent was initial intent minimum wage increase minimum wage decrease so I'm not sure what they're going to do but for right how much does it have to increase every time by their definite there's there's multiple definitions of inflation out there I don't know the particulars of each of the definition but I will tell you that the definition of inflation that they use within the minimum wage is different than the definition that they use for our base support level increase in our budget the definition changes all the time right but but I will just tell you it's not it's they're using two different definitions so minimum wage is more than what they're using when they give us our money in in so it's not a set amount no it depends on what happens we hear something in August and then again they finalize it in in about September October uh they give you a little bit one Sometimes in April just depending um I imagine it's not going to be quite as high next year knock on wood but but it's it's going to exceed what we would normally get from the state and this has to be done by when by January 1st January 1st what we'll do so what will happen is first of all the increase will take place on December 29th just because the way the pay cycle works with Pinal County um but we're getting approval of this and the and the salary schedule and then on in December you will get a list of all the employees and what your increase is it'll be a dollar but but that's what we have to do per our legal counsel and so that will be an agenda item in December and then we will get the thing started on the 29th you have a question I do so why is there a difference between what we're okay like the two different increase no why aren't we given as much as we are supposed to oh good question Oh you mean I don't know that he can answer that yeah no it's it's just it's just because they use different different factors and and in statute what you're doing to give an increase to school districts it's been predetermined before that this is the factor when they ran the initiative for this they select you could select three different ways to do increase they selected the specific way years and years ago back in the 80s for what your increase is and 301 made a modification this was run separately and the people that ran the initiative chose this one because obviously it was higher um but I don't think anybody anticipated this situation where you're going to get a two percent increase on your budget for school districts and you're going to get an 8.3 percent increase to your support staff and the disconnect is is tremendous uh it's been two years in a row but I'm not sure anybody thought to what would be inflation 10 years down the road or whatever it was and and so nobody figured that piece out and so it creates a bit of a problem uh and it'll be hard-pressed to change the inflation number for school districts given the current structure down on Washington Street okay any other questions all right I'll take a motion I moved to approve the salary increases and changes to the support staff salary schedule beginning January 2023 as presented thank you all in favor aye aye aye motion carries four to zero eight point four discussion consideration approval of changes to the 22-23 extra Duty stipend salary schedule and extra Duty stipends schedule sanctioned Arizona interscholastic events AIA it's a it's great yeah along with that support salary uh staff schedule um that was just passed the increase to the minimum wage is based on the 2016 initiative and this impacts several other salary schedules so the purpose of this agenda item is to reflect an impact on the minimum wage increase of 2022-23 extra Duty stipend schedule and the extra Duty stipend schedule sanctioned a i a which is the Arizona inner Scholastic Association and the changes are reflected in the additional service portion of the salary schedule so you have that in front of you you have two salary schedules there that we've made some changes to and as well as the administration is also requesting the addition of a new extra Duty stipend at the high school CHS has an Esports team which competes through AIA and currently there's approximately 30 students on that team the number of students in the affiliation of AAA would warrant a new stipend in the state type in this place to three percent of the base pay or rate for a certified staff and this would be in the amount of one thousand five hundred and two dollars that is added on the second column under high school co-curricular sponsors for Esports any questions yeah I have a question um I'm looking at the up at the top The Heading percentage of amounts are based on certified placement at fifty thousand seventy is that what was raised by the 8.3 percent is that the new number yes no no no no no no that's the I'm sorry go ahead doctor that's that's the number that we took care of for the certified staff back in in the summer so so that's the starting base salary for teachers this document reflects most of those things and and so it's in there but we're not really changing anything other than the the the the minimum wage in the right hand corner and this esport so the percentages are all the same that in terms of we haven't changed any percentages any other question yeah and then for the um the extra the adopt the extra duty stipends is has anything changed there are those just again based upon changes in the cost of US based on custom living anyone okay I'll take a motion well I can't read oh no my glasses and everything yeah I don't have my glasses that's right uh I moved to approve the changes to the 2022-2023 extra Duty stipend schedule and extra Duty stipend schedule sanctioned Arizona interscholastic events as presented second all in favor aye aye aye motion carries four to zero eight point five discussion and consideration um of approval 22-23 JL comes performance-based a plan Administration yes if you remember when we did the uh uh budget back in the spring we talked about actually a pay plan for both administrators and support staff as you recognize on a previous uh agenda item uh the cost of the increase uh made it for the support staff at 7.33 made it fiscally not responsible or able to go ahead and also do a performance pay plan a performance pay plan for support staff would have been 155 000 however we still as we deal with administrative issues are trying to make sure that we balance uh raises across the board for everybody in different ways and so I'm still recommending we move forward with the administrative performance pay plan performance pay plan is set up identical to the uh teacher performance pay plan there are some adjustments relative to what what validates uh professional Investments so teachers get points for doing certain things administrators would be slightly different administrators are still aligned with the letter grades like teachers are they're aligned with professional development and so everything else is essentially the same it's a cost of twenty five thousand dollars that is fact into all of the um all the budgetary issues that that you were talking about a second ago Mr Delaney so we went ahead and took a look at that just like the teachers this will allow for at a maximum uh all uh administrative staff to get 800 just like the teachers are getting 800 so it's here's the teachers and I just think it's a way for us to say we continue to Value the work that the administration does and are going to continue the best of our ability to continue to do those those increases is the best we can that amount here um for this Academic Year or this yeah this so it's through June the 30th yes okay and then if we proceed with this when we look about the budget for the next academic or fiscal year we'd be looking at building that into the budget at that time right right and I would anticipate just because of what unless there's a significant increase in the um uh in the 301 monies which we don't know until each March I would anticipate that what we would try to do is mirror teachers and administrators because the cost administrators is minimal I would anticipate that that there's not going to be significant increases there so we were probably going to anticipate it's staying around 800 or 900 bucks for both groups in in the future years any other questions all right I'll take a motion I move to approve the JL Combs Unified School District 2022-2023 the form and space paid plan for administration as presented a second all in favor aye aye motion carry support is zero 8.6 discussion consideration of approval or upgrades to District radio system I hope there's Granderson come on down first thank you for turning the air down I don't know if it was old lady hot flashes or if it was really hot flashes it's hot I was like oh thank you Mr Anderson as the EOC coordinator I appreciate that um Madam president members of the board and please present uh that recommendation to upgrade the radio system this will be the first phase that works towards uh more concert comprehensive communication system that will tie into our Emergency Management ready question no question just an observation on the uh voted invoice they still have our old District address says 301 homes instead of the new District address so they just need to be informed we have a new address new address yeah I want to make sure they deliver correct yeah get to the right place so you say this is the first phase how many phases will there be um the second phase uh would deal with buying the radio system to the buses so that way Administration and the bus drivers can communicate uh seamlessly throughout the district but this new radio system allows Administration to monitor activities at the site no matter where they are in the where right now the existing radio system they have to be physically at that site half the time it doesn't work so and then that's going to be available through the repeater system that we'll put throughout the district but I will and I just caution this for everybody I've said it a couple times but I'll say it again we will be reducing the number of rados that are in this District we are very radio happy however when you start to have uh events that create potential issues the last thing you need to do is have a bunch of individuals throughout the campus have a radio that's broadcasting information that maybe we don't want to be broadcasted so we will probably I don't know we won't probably we will definitely see a change in philosophy with respect to who has radios and their access to radios and these are a higher level quality of radios than we currently purchase so they will not be handed out probably or they will not be handed out to the degree that they currently are handed out so you're aware in case there's any squawk and that takes place walking like the radio not in the radio sense any other questions I moved to approve the purchase of new District radio system from USA radio rentals under Arizona State contract number ctr046825 as presented a second all in favor aye aye motion carries four to zero so now we're gonna my little change in here we're gonna go ahead and Skip down to 9.4 to the energy saving performance contract and I'm going to invite Mr Ben Matson from vergee if you remember a couple years ago we actually went in agreement with Mid-State they did a name change so they're now called Verity for an energy savings contract as part of that Energy savings contract they do a measurement verification on an annual basis to let us know whether we're meeting the projected uh requirements under State Statute you have to meet the requirements uh otherwise they they owe us money there's a guarantee and so this would be the annual report that will come back roughly this time each year and so I've asked Mr Matson to make a presentation so I'll turn it over to Mr Matson great thank you uh Madam could you just go very slow so we can go through all 55 Pages wait a minute no no that's why you moved me up at the agenda baby but uh yeah we're gonna go just through the executive summary but uh yeah and maybe my vacation photos or something but uh um Madam president members of the board uh superintendent Dr Wyman um good evening uh my name is Ben Matson uh I'm a principal executive with verigie and excited to talk to you a little bit about how uh how you're doing on your energy bills uh if you remember um some familiar faces here from when we originally did our original project as Dr Wyman mentioned we have to buy statute we have to do a performance review of your utility data and how we're performing around the energy measures that we installed I'm just gonna do the executive summary and so we'll be able to get through this here in just a few minutes um the biggest thing here is in section one just to give you some background these are the key parameters a baseline period is what the savings are all predicated off of so a baseline from here is before we installed it we take roughly about a two year look these were from 2018 to uh to 2020 of April and so that's what our savings are all predicated off of uh and also before of course of course the the pandemic and everything else uh our contract execution was in April the date of actually uh final completion of when the construction project was done was in early June of 01 uh our performance period uh which is what we're going to talk about today is from June to May um the overall term that we're looking at you're going to see me for the next uh 16 years uh by Statute I have to do this for the next the next 16 excuse me the next 15.

this is number one uh our mnv methodology measurement and verification methodology here's another acronym for you but the ipmvp which is the international protocol of measurement and verification the Arizona State Statute says that we have to follow the ipmvp rules and regulations of how we look at your data and then uh follow the performance of it um so moving ahead to the next page this is what the Baseline uh going back to 2018 and 2020 over those two years this is what the district was currently doing at that time at that moment in time roughly over 8 million kwh a baseline of electricity costs of over 930 000. um water costs of over 182 000 you can kind of see just the simple uh chart there of what the district was currently spending at that time I'm going to move to the next page here uh energy rates uh are skyrocketing as with inflation it's unfortunate um ABS which is not this District but is is going out for uh 12 increase uh SRP is uh is well above this Mark they're at 4.7 percent um a water eraser increasing as well um when we originally did this contract we're trying to look at how much rate utility uh would increase over a period of time uh we we marked this very low but we had no idea of what was going to happen with inflation and so we're well below the inflation Mark of 3.6 percent um so what did our what did we guarantee what did Verity guarantee with the installation measures which is on the next page the Evo kit which is really LED lighting that's the dynamic lighting packages that were in all the classrooms water efficiency upgrades toilet faucets urinals we did a lot of HVAC upgrades at Combs traditional Harmon and uh Simonton um orchestrate which is our building automation platform which ties in a lot of control systems kind of a smart building we also worked with a partner called fmx to do maintenance Management Systems uh and then the big part of this project was in the Solar that was installed throughout the district our total guaranteed savings uh over the course of all those things is a little over 719 000 is what we need to guarantee the ECM another acronym sorry our industry is happy with acronyms but that stands for energy conservation measures the ecms that we did for the jail Combs Unified School District are located there below uh in the chart we did LED lighting across the entire District uh same thing with water efficiency upgrades uh as I mentioned heavy mechanical at three sites uh orchestrate and then solar was installed everywhere um we also did the solar um a shade canopies rather than the roof mounts and that was located throughout the district all right let's talk about how you did um I don't know if anybody from Holmes high school or Combs middle school or uh Harmon but those were the biggest winners uh in terms of energy efficiencies those uh they crushed it so uh the blue line is our Baseline usage uh and then the the actual what what was actually then used is in the green you can see every school performed uh Combs High School homes Middle School Armin and then came close was Ellsworth uh all performed exceptionally um and so the that's just an overall chart view there in the total if you want to go through all the detail you can um the main thing that we look for in the next slide here is you know does the does the savings usually match the the is the usage match the Baseline we're trying to see if there's any major regular uh um does it follow a pattern uh with the weather and what you previously had as you can see here it does um we're trying to see if there's any major issues is the HVAC working is the lighting system working this chart really follows what your previous usage was uh perfectly uh except for that you're using a whole lot less so that's a good thing there uh the next one is is really on the solar side what did the solar produce versus what you purchased versus what the Baseline is so really we're looking at these gray lines the green lines and the blue lines the blue line is what you previously used at Combs High School or excuse me Jay Oklahoma school district the green is what the performance period usage is and then the the gray is what you actually purchased from SRP the difference between those two things is what the solar produced and so um it's a pretty pretty incredible to see uh the massive decline of what is actually coming from SRP and and how much resiliency that we're actually producing uh here ourselves on the solar side uh so what did we what does all this equate to our total verified electric uh cost savings is over 474 uh thousand dollars our solar savings is over 221 uh small amount of water savings at 35 which matched the guarantee um our total verified savings is over 000.

so uh all good news so that's great to hear um the final kind of project performance here uh basically uh is laid out here between the costing uh um and the program savings uh for year one and we're going to be tracking this for the next 15. um I guess really I just want to say congratulations to you um to think that we've gained a capital infrastructure of new HVAC equipment we've improved the learning space with new lighting um and uh you know create a better environment for students and staff and all without increasing the taxpayer uh it's it's it's a it's an incredible accomplishment um this isn't a sales pitch but you have a great staff here um you know from a facilities to Administration they really care and you guys are doing a lot of things right so congratulations to you thank you for doing this I I do have please a question yeah Shelley says of course Bob has a question yeah no problem um one thing that I'd like to see that I didn't see in these slides is in the uh the base period of 2018 to 2020.

on an average how much did as a district did we spend for electricity did we spend for water back then and how much this past year did we spend for electricity and water so the actual numbers coming out of our budget what did we spend and then let's look at the difference I'd like to see those numbers not tonight because I obviously I'm putting on the spot no but I'd like to have those presented to us absolutely and we can that's an easy figure that we can get back to you um you know the main thing that we we're seeing is the costing is increasing substantially utility rates are increasing well above what we anticipated and so what that means is though is that it becomes avoided cost unfortunately it will not be reflected in the actual utility bill uh because it's like what you would have been paying if you didn't do these measures would be so much more you'd be paying you know 1.3 million a year uh and so that's that's the only thing that I'll caution the district on is that because inflation is going so high it becomes an avoided cost and so but I'm happy to get that information there were some assumptions in terms of cost increases that were built in so let's just use those assumptions sure and go forward and that way we're kind of comparing Apples to Apples yeah absolutely yeah that's easy to do thank you any other questions questions for him thank you yeah thank you for your time thank you Ben appreciate it so we'll go ahead and go jump back up to um 9.1 okay go ahead Madam president members of the board Dr William I appreciate this opportunity to talk today a little bit on uh our College and Career Readiness platform that we're currently using a graze 4 through 12 called major Clarity uh you probably have heard some mention of it through Dr Wyman with various events and awards that have been uh granted to our district you can do oh I have to do it we were going to be here a while guys absolutely nothing okay I'm glad this is a public record okay um so uh we adopted major Clarity it is it is our College and Career Readiness platform um it's uh designed to help teachers counselors parents uh students um combine efforts in a in a very user-friendly way to guide students in that that turning maybe a pathway for post-secondary um currently we haven't implemented at all of the schools grades four through twelve um at the elementary school grades four and five it's a career literacy piece that's aligned with the Ade career literacy standards at grades six through eight it's more of a career exploration platform and then at the high school both high schools it's a career Readiness and so the students are able to dive much deeper into the program and and really plan for post-secondary uh upcoming we hope to help students develop a four and a six year plan so it is as a seventh grader they would begin to develop a four-year excuse me a six-year plan that would basically they would choose classes that are aligned with a pathway that they may like to pursue and then when they get to high school they kind of refine that and so that they're not just graduating with their their credits but they actually have a plan in Hand of and hopefully some background some education that will guide them towards something that's uh in post-secondary um we currently do also have a work based learning database where students can tap in we'll show that to you in a little bit and then um the post-secondary plan for all students I did bring some help today so I'm going to ask them to come up if you would and then I'll I'll bring you to the microphone a little bit at a time so this is the student Journey they take an assessment we are now doing that as low as fourth grade but also in sixth grade and every other year uh that assessment aligns with what it creates what's called a fit score that fit score aligns them with a career pathway that based on their personality uh based on some of the career expression activities they do it kind of guides them to careers that they might be well designed for and then of course we do the academic planning so they're actually creating their four six and four year plan ahead of time and then we have opportunities for them to explore a workplace work based experiences post-secondary so they can research any college across the country and they can search out any scholarship both local and across the country that's available all using this platform so we started our history is back in the fall of 2020 we had an issue with trying to address the ecap at the high school and really being able to document the the what was necessary that's that's outlined by the State Board of Education and through that process we decided that we did need some kind of College and Career Readiness platform we did the research and uh obviously we chose major Clarity we did a soft launch this spring of 2020 at the high school with some English teachers and CT teachers um and then we did a full implementation in the fall of 2021 at Combs High School in a kind of a soft launch at the middle school and then as you can see in Fall of 2022 we are fully implemented at um at ccs and CMS along with high school of course and then we also um after fall break we were able to implement the elementary platform as well as a result from last year with our 7th through 12th graders we had 91 percent of our 7th through 12th graders activated their account so that means they had to go in log in and then they had to do some kind of activity typically on these type of platforms you see about 25 activation so hats off to the staffs at both the high school and the middle school for contributing to that and then the 83 percent represents the number of the percentage of students that actually went back at least one more time to the platform to do some type of explore career exploration activity uh research at college or whatever and so total we had um 1631 students with a high number of logins High numbers more than two okay yeah um as a result major Clarity awarded this uh the um Platinum power user award we were ranked fifth in Arizona um I'm sorry no fifth in the country out of 455 school districts as far as usage and we were ranked fifth in the state of Arizona um nope sorry second in the state of Arizona with total usage um so we were recognized uh nationally by Major Clarity for the efforts now I want to want to note here that this was possible because of the support that we had with our site administrators and our counselors and our teachers our approach was we didn't want to make this the responsibility of The English Department which has been that's been the practice in the past or upon the counselors as we know they have such a large caseload so we developed a plan that involves all the teachers at the high school they were all doing something with the students on the platform and that's why we had such a high usage and um and then at the middle school with Leslie weiberg and her team and Laura's support they were able to do some similar things at the middle school so hats off to to Administration and staff members um our implementation process we assembled a team of what we call Campus Champions and these were members from uh the wards they were teachers we had counselors we had administrators we kind of developed a plan and then we trained the site staff so that everybody on campus was familiar with the platform and could utilize it in the classroom and then of course we launched it to the students in a very systematic way so that it was understandable and was user friendly so I'm gonna I'm gonna allow some of my uh partners in crime to share with us what they're doing on campus so I've asked uh John Griffin who's at Ranch Elementary and he's going to share with you the the fourth and fifth grade platform thank you the fourth and fifth grade platform is very exciting because we're able to have children begin to explore different career interests there's 16 different career clusters as students get to visit and get passports in and so the students are able to start getting knowledge about the different career clusters and the different occupations that they could explore and fourth and fifth grade and then the sixth grade we're able to shift it up to similar to what the middle school is doing like the personality assessment and going much deeper into the different career clusters and career opportunities and I'm super excited about it but my excitement it's not really what's necessary um important I have a student Marianna who came here today and if you want to come up Mariana she's going to speak real briefly about some of her experiences on major Clarity she's on the sixth grade platform and so she's able to explore a lot and she's really been doing incredible with it she's probably going to get in front of me on the platform because I'm trying to keep up with the kids but I'll let her speak pull the microphone down um can you say video production is that something that you do at Ranch okay where did you find those courses oh okay all right awesome thank you hon [Applause] okay and then this is Leslie why we're glessy's our counselors that kind of describe what what happened so we give them the personality assessment and they it asks things like um study the structure of the human body and you say either yes I would like to do that no never or maybe um another example is check the inventory so they rate those and it will give them their personality type so like like you said that our artistic is created then eventually education so it gives you your personality type then we do the learning styles and this the the statements are like when I have to do an assignment I have to use my hands I'm able to remember better or I learn better if someone reads the directory so they take your personality type and your learning style which by the way the learning styles you create a spreadsheet share the information with speakers so they all know that you learn best this um so they mesh the two together and then we'll give you a Career Cluster within the career clusters there's hundreds of jobs that students can search um and I guess it gets these students like thinking about the future the High School courses are uploaded into the in there so they can start creating their plan in seventh grade like what they're gonna according to you know what they've decided to do for a living it's a great plan but part of that career exploration is the the students actually get to view um a video of the day of the life of somebody that's in that career um they get to really explore what the job outlook is what the salary is what the ability level what education background you need so that's really in depth as far as really understanding if I want to be a doctor lawyer or fireman this is what it's going to take or if I don't like school and I don't plan on doing anything past High School um then what do I qualify for and they can actually dial that down to see well what does it take what kind of credential would I need if I don't want to go to post-secondary and things like that so it really can go as deep and as far as you want to okay um and then we have from the high school we have two folks um Heidi you're gonna go first okay you need this okay with the interest okay so um um so it'll pull up a page and they can plug in and then like find out of your plan so much everybody foreign language but um it's not set in stone though that's great I'm gonna do this and I'm gonna do that that part is really cool from my counselor's perspective because that saves time on us very much already because honestly when we go in the classrooms kids are like it goes about that way but this they haven't already planned out no no and even with the correct time I kind of something else but it keeps telling me counselor counselor that's where I'm at I'm here um and then the financial resource I love that part because kids will come in especially seniors my parents want me to I live dollars where can I find this at and they're already familiar with hey go right here to finance reasons and it will um pull it up good eight Bob you want oh that's gay ACT score I mean it gives very but and I have to say so this is my first year like digging in just so cool everybody should love this um and so I love it though actually you can go to Major Clarity go to Financial Resources this then this then and I mean it pulls up thousands and thousands and only that we can do the local scholarship that we have a little button put them all up there and then even like Fellowship that gets sentenced to us just aren't Fellowship um milk without and we can upload them ourselves into that so that tons and tons of opportunities are really cool um and then the post-secondary thing is also a really good thing because the kids can if they have a college in mind that they want to go to they click on that and they can put the college name in there but let's be honest they don't even know what to do yet so they can put in like on a business um College in Wyoming and then all the colleges in Wyoming that will that or they don't have to put on all the different colleges you click on that college they'll take that website this is accepted ACP score you need type of a private that women is I mean it is so cool um it really is a cool thing so those are the three kind of that we've gone um and it just makes it like streamlined they're already doing it for in the elementary I thought they just gonna go through for registration figure out what I want to do I'm sorry it's a really cool thing thank you thank you um you can see your excitement and and it's kind of that way the more you understand it the more exciting it becomes now um uh Diane was one of our our early I'm gonna I'll call you guinea pig just because you kind of were right um and Diane jumped in with both feet she was part of our kind of that that pilot program and immediately started using it with her students in her English class and she's been one of our biggest Advocates on campus so I asked her to kind of share some of the experience she's had with some of the assignments just realized looking I've got one of yours one of yours um so I have been very fortunate where um I have been able to really see the program from the beginning and uh we're now taking it a step further so this year I teach my ESL classes classes and I teach my senior classes so my seniors I want them to walk out to be able to answer the question what are you doing next and we spent a lot of time talking about um that functional text all of the things that they need to prepare like uh this quarter we're talking about portfolios so um and major Clarity has a section that goes along with that um but the the Deep dive that we're doing for uh major Clarity in the as far as the career exploration goes is uh taking a look at um they know what area or programs they have an idea of what they're interested in so they've done the interview watched the interview or they've answered or done an activity on there so then they go a step further into okay if I want if I'm really interested in this what is the next step so um we've created a document that goes along with major Clarity so that they can click on the schools that go along with their career choices and then they can click on and compare them in a comparison to so I I literally had like six different schools up at the same time you could see their graduation rates um their acceptance you can see how much a typical four-year program would be so not only are some of these kids even my even students that um you know they they think their certification is it they don't need anything else now they're going oh if I want more money that I need to get this so I need to you know find out more about the type of schooling that goes along with that so and some of my kids were actually balancing how much would it cost at a two-year College to the four-year universe so to get a chance to kind of dive in deeper and look at those schools as prospective places that they're going to go next I uh the kids really like it um it gives an opportunity for them if they engage into it they're going to produce better and work more effectively so of course Dr Goolsby from ccs at CCS we do it a little bit differently we use it during our advisory and so four times a week we get together with the kids and we goal set and two of the areas that I wanted to focus on was we've done resume major Clarity has a nice um part in it where the kids can put in the data and then it prints out a resume for them and they take that as the beginning step to the English class and then the English teacher works with them on the verbiage that they use and we're focused on what are you going to use the resume for is it for college applications is it for the world of work are you going into the military so what's your next step and how does this play the academic planning is a very neat tool because the kids can put in a career I brought in two of our data notebooks because we actually print out part of major Clarity and the kids put it in their data notebook and later on if any of you want to see them but like one student might put in I want to study Film Production and then right away it tells them what degree you need what careers you might have in that and then it even flips over to the next page where it shows you what classes you should be taking in high school and what electives might lead you to that so those are just two things we we do the personality assessment we go with it because every Tuesday the kids know that's major Clarity day for us and it's a useful tool for our students because it's an open door to the Future and it can be anything that you want college career going to the next step in pursuing a technical training and major Clarity opens those doors to the kids and like like everyone said you can pull up and compare one program to another so you might click on it and say okay I'm going to start at CAC and these are the classes I'm going to take and then I want to transfer to this school and this is the next step so it's been it's a part of our every week and it also lets the kids take it into the classroom whether it's the social studies classroom or the English classroom or the math classroom and continue to talk about what's in my future and where you know where do I start to get to where I want to go thank you so it's a lofty goal um would it be nice if we could you know there's the three E's if every student was either enlisted enrolled or employed upon graduation right um that's a lofty goal but at least we're providing those students an opportunity to kind of seek those opportunities or those options that are available to them right so anyway that's all I have any question yes ma'am would this be something that would be good for parent adversity like for them to figure out like as parents to come and go through that 100 yeah yeah okay so then we have um discussion information what are we still going we're still going oh I have I have some people to bring up and a report no I'm just I thought that we were done so I'm just gonna quickly review the high school benchmarks and um the school letter grade so the high school benchmarks took place at the end of October and what we were looking at for the middle of October what we were looking at is giving students current quarterly benchmarks in grades 9 through 11 for ELA and math they were based on what they were what they were covering at that moment in time and we worked with teams of teachers from the high school with our content and instructional coaches to come up with an assessment that they felt was aligned to what they were working on and the priority standards they were being taught at that time and then we held a data review meeting to understand that first quarter data and then what those learning opportunities need to be for students where we're going to go next is we'll continue to update instructional practices to address student needs and then we are working right now on that quarter two Benchmark to be given right before we go out on winter break so here is our quarter one Benchmark data from the high school so our ninth graders in ela and math uh 10th and 11th and then the associated Math course at that time what we're looking at is an improvement over the Benchmark data from last school year but we still see areas that we need to work on with our students and a lot of that has to do with application it's just taking what they're learning the foundational skills in both Ela and math and applying them to a higher level of rigor those types of questions that can get students thinking about what the information that they're learning any questions about benchmark okay so letter grades um Ade release letter grades at the beginning of the month and this is the first time that we've had a release of letter grades since the 1819 school year District letter grades will most likely be released for next school year for the current school year we're in during next school year so where we're at now is we know what our schools have received in terms of letter grades and we also know that we have to do something with that information and what we're going to do is we're going to do comprehensive data reviews we're going to discuss with schools and the community what the data looks like what the data means and how that data can be used to support not only in the classroom but at home there's going to be a professional learning supports and opportunities provided to everyone so that we know what teachers need to be successful in the classroom and focus that PLC time that's that professional learning communities inside the school day at each school to address what areas of need and then obviously provide additional support for our schools that need that extra bump so we will again be working with those schools we are right now we've identified the data we've identified students and we're rolling information out for Success when we get to the end of this school year the state assessment any questions about letter grade I have a question in terms of Simonton how close were they to the next cutoff for a c um they were in the middle of the range so what it had to what we're looking at is growth data which is what most Arizona schools saw a lot of achievement in Simonton had an exceptional amount of growth during the prior school year so it's maintaining that growth from year to year when we have turnover and staff so that that was what we'll be looking at to see for this next year so we can get that growth up another question thank you are we done with that one all right so 9.2 discussion and information on curriculum adoption and warehousing that would that's what that says all right now we put together a short video presentation we did not um this one will be really quick 30 seconds I just want to be really quick but we did um we did have an information request from the board come in through the CIA team um in terms of curriculum and curriculum usage in the classroom so just wanted to share with you a little bit about what that looks like and what uh which of those resources we support um so basically we look at three levels of curriculum The Core Curriculum the supplemental and then those ancillary materials uh Core Curriculum we generally Define as our adopted text and materials that follow our statute those are supported by our CIA team both financially as well as training supports throughout the school year and we have our supplemental curriculum materials that are also approved and supported by the CIA team again financial and training and are utilized district-wide the difference between those two being that those supplemental pieces don't go through that formal adoption cycle because they're usually smaller materials that we're using in some sort of an addition and then those ancillary materials being those teacher selected and site supported so kind of those teachable moments those things that come up uh related to that individual school or that individual lesson uh that might come up during that time uh so the question was asked about what's being utilized in the classrooms and and how do we keep that stuff collected so um our adopted curriculum and materials are taken through that formal adoption cycle as you all approved at the end of last year we had our science adoption last year that we are in the process of implementing right now um and we are currently working on a math adoption that we launched this this week so this includes working with the committee to determine the needs evaluate the effectiveness of those materials here to our statutory guidelines including that ever so fun public review period and submit to the jail Combs governing board for approval so you're familiar with that piece again we're working on the math adoption right now uh launched that on November 7th had a really great first meeting with that team um I laughed because I said you got to love Math teachers we had mapped out several several hours for work and they came in and like this is this is what we need this is what our kids need you know they were they were laying it out it was great so um what we did this first week was to create that rubric to evaluate those materials we will finalize that in our next meeting and then that goes out to the vendors to say hey here's what we're looking for here's our criteria if you can meet meet that criteria we'd like to look at your stuff so um it's a good process um in terms of our curriculum warehousing so the question being where do we keep our materials how do teachers know what to access and what has been approved by us and is supported by our team so we currently in our district utilize those materials through a shared folder so that's part of our Google Suite of applications um it is not the most modern and robust format for us to keep it but it is accessible via our teachers and it includes our approved vendor website such as McGraw-Hill our recent science adoption so um we have started looking at some external vendors that would Warehouse that information in a different way we know we need to look at that and want to look at that in part because of that change in statutory requirement and the ability to have access to that from our community and so we can do that through the Google Suite it's just not the most user friendly so we started to take a look at that and and find some ways that we can provide those access to those materials so that our community can see the scope and sequence of what we're teaching and the materials that we're using in a little more user-friendly way so that's a piece that we're working on right now we've already done a couple of vendor presentations we're kind of vetting that out with our content coaches and our CIA so I apologize would be super fast questions related to the curriculum do you feel that your curriculum matches what you're benchmarking um yes and um quite nicely we'll we'll launch into our course guide piece in a minute here I think there's a significant piece with that and I included for you in this presentation I didn't pull it up on the slide but um one of the pieces that we're also working on within the CIA team is to develop and bring to you a curriculum adoption cycle um we're in a situation as a district where when the high school opened obviously we didn't have high school materials prior to that point in time so it was sort of this all at once um very easily time goes by now we are well-ish years later and we need to update some of that curriculum so to answer Mr Ray's question more directly mostly I think we have some gaps in there and we have some gaps in there that we're working to address through the science adoption the math adoption and the additional pieces moving forward one of the pieces that I've been working with Karen Finn on it is to look at the the statutory requirements in terms of curriculum adoption link um and so we may come back to you in the future to look at longer periods of time for those adoptions so that we have those materials staying current um I think one of the questions that's always asked is are we making sure that our teachers in the classroom are utilizing the adopted materials and that becomes a little more difficult as time progresses and if our materials that we've adopted are not staying up to date with the standards and the expectations for the teaching pedagogy then we start to get people bringing in extra resources so we've got to start to get a process in place to regularly update those elements so that we can make sure that what we have in the classroom we're able to support and it aligns with where our standards are at and with what our expected teaching practices are so um very long-winded answer to your question we've got some strong alignment there and we have some gaps that we need to fill and part of that is the updating of curriculum with those those more modern teaching elements and that's the process we're working I have a question in terms of the curriculum review we have the open period for people to come in right um as far as the science is concerned how much public review did we have on the materials it's the same standard process it's it's at least a 60-day period but that's I'm looking to see how many people actually I don't know because I was coming in at the time so I couldn't I don't know if I could answer that Dr Wyman might have some knowledge I would say my memory would be less than one hand I send one hand yeah I mean you may have had somebody if they were in a meeting here that we had along the back if they were in a meeting here for something they may have casually viewed some of the things that were there but I've had more in history I've had people sit down and go Page by Page by Page in the history um I'm booking another District we didn't get any of that so we would have had very casual review of it in the back of the room if they were in this room but no formal review that we're aware of we also made it online and we had minimal to no review line of the materials thank you we are taking reservations for a math adoption review I'm sure there will be a wait list if you want to get through those materials it'll be quite engaging and very controversial I'm sure so that we'll be working on that piece uh launching that in the spring semester so thank you and I get to stay standing here oh okay see one more another pretty short one here for you yes my first guide meet Madam president members of the board Dr Wyman and Mr Costa one more time as we wrap up the end of the evening so the 2324 course guide we're just bringing that to you tonight uh for your review um with the just really a few minor updates I'm going to tell you a little bit about our process and then assistant principle April kachinski we'll walk you through what the high school has done and some of the updates um but obviously we are are trying to make sure that we are aligning the coursework to the expectations we have for our students to be a high of high academic achievement um we've also started to do some work with John and the CTE team we've got some plans in place moving forward to make sure um kind of to Mr Ray's question before that we're starting to do an even better job of aligning the offerings to both student interest as well as what we know industry is calling for um so we're going to continue to adjust that as we move forward but here's the general process for our course guide review so the first piece obviously is to make sure that the course offerings are aligned to our state standards we review historical course enrollment take a look at the courses that we're offering and our students still interested in them are they still pieces that we're getting students to enroll in We Gather some teacher and counselor input so we brought together a committee at the high school to go through that and share with us some of their expectations the committee reviewed that gave some suggestive updates those updates came to a small group of folks principal assistant principal myself and the counselors looking over that information we made sure that those pieces aligned approve of those chain changes and then we're presenting them to you this evening for review I'm going to bring Miss Kaczynski up and let her share with you some of the changes in the course guide that we're proposing for next year and um so as we go through as we go through some of the course changes you'll notice that we have each content level an area listed we have courses in blue and then we have horses in Red the courses in blue are the ones that we have added and the ones in red are the ones we have deleted from the course catalog you'll also notice that under certain content areas we do not have editions or deletions but as I go forward through the presentation I'll go into detail with some of the changes we made in that area so for English the changes that we made were to the descriptions with these three courses so honors freshman English AP language and comp and AP Literature and comp and the reason that we change those course descriptions was to align more to the curriculum and what is being taught um it still aligns with the state for science we changed the description for Integrated Science the word biology was in the course description and we do not teach biology and Institute science um we did do a grade level change for our honors biology we made it 10th grade only rather than nine through ten and the reason behind that is because if they skipped Integrated Science they would miss a big portion to prepare them for the state Science assessment um we also added an honors Integrated Science it would be for nine for social studies we um changed the description for economics same reasoning we wanted to align it more to the curriculum and it still aligns with the state uh we added AP economics to the course catalog um it was offered but it just wasn't in the 2122 so nothing changed for math we changed the description under quantitative reasoning and one of the notes that we added was that it does count towards the graduation requirements but it does not prepare students for a rigorous Math course in college uh we did do a grade level change to honors geometry we went um 9th through 12th rather than ninth grade because we want to give all the students an opportunity to be on that accelerated path as well as honors Algebra 2 same reasoning behind that we also added an AP free calculus course I know the AP board just added that and so um for that we wanted to add that to our course catalog that will be offered for 90.

and then excuse me we do have a few changes to the electives you'll see that we have quite a few course description changes again it aligns with everything else we are changing it to align more with what is being taught in the curriculum and so we have it um under Sports PE we added more skills of what those students are going to be doing in that class acting one two Advanced theatrical production stagecraft one and two we also change that to align more with the curriculum sports med 3 we did add a note and that note explains that students can receive an emergency medical responder certificate sports medicine one and three we removed a note that it does not qualify for dual enrollment anymore and then we changed PE from an elective we changed it to an elective rather than a PE since a PE credit is not required and then we changed the yearbook elective to an elective rather English because it was listed as an English how come it's not dual credit anymore that's a great question um I know the department chair of CTE brought that to my attention that Sports Medicine 2 is the only one that allows it now are we doing that still through Chandler Gilbert oh and then we did a grade level change to our PE classes um currently they're split up 9th 10th and then 11th and 12th um so we are going to make our PE classes 9th through 12th it just gives more flexibility um within students and then we did a grade level change for AP Spanish language and culture um we're doing 9 through 12th rather than just allowing the 10th through 12th graders to take it we've added some courses for our electives Sports pe2 so right now we have sports pe1 and sports pe2 however we just um differentiated the difference of skills that they would be learning in the sports ee one versus two and we are also going to add a unified PE to be more inclusive to our specialized students who will be paired up with general education students in that class when we're adding a percussion Ensemble and a ceramics 3.

um the courses that we removed were concert band and the reason we removed concert band is because it consists of wind and symphonic we already have a wind and symphonic Force so instead of having concert band as well we just removed that and separated what they were doing uh and then we removed chamber winds because there was no um we didn't have a high knee and then just some additional information um we did add some Edge annuity requirements into the course catalog so that parents were aware of what those requirements looked like if their student was enrolled in an Edgenuity course um we updated the course registration form we're trying to work towards um students being on track before they get to their senior year and trying to catch up on all their credits so we did add that to the registration forms um we added the Combs High School vision the site values and we also added a great and complete portion which just explains that if a student has missed a final exam or has an incomplete grade they have 10 days going into the following order to make that and if not um it would go to an um and then we invade some modifications to the state assessments there was accuplacer on the course the course guide under assessments and we don't offer that anymore so we removed that from the forced catalog and then we removed the Combs High School motto because the site values is what took place for that and then I also changed the format of the course catalog just for it to be a little bit more sequential and organized any question well I don't have one yeah think of one real quick and thanks thanks to the uh behind the scenes wizard I will rewind to Mr Elena's previous question the answer to your question is 10 we had 10 people review um the science curriculum um so two hands not just one two hands well In fairness one of those two hands had the same person on it three times so we could say 10 or we could say seven we're in that ballpark thank you it's quick what can we say the name of course guide all right and they're waiting for your magical words oh we're not done yet okay um requests for future agenda items anybody have anything that they would like to put on no because then it'll be longer than eight o'clock that's right all right all right so I make a motion to adjourn at 807.

Chaney I'm the president for the Tucson our Tucson Unified School District that is incorrect the Tucson Education Association um and as president I'm really really happy to be here it is an honor I am so so thrilled uh to be given this opportunity and also to just gaze upon what a beautiful facility this is I have uh looked at looked at uh the the environment tonight and I think what a privilege it would be for every District to have such a beautiful place and to have so many people who care so deeply about their district and about their Community I come here as your neighbor um in a neighboring School District with many employees who may live in Marana but work into USD and I am a bit taken aback by some advertising that took place recently and I just wanted to remind everyone that as neighbors we are working hard to to remind everyone of all the things that we have in common because oftentimes we have much more in common than we do apart public education has been through some very very difficult times in the last 20 years and no more so true today and as a result it is so vital that we communicate with one another that we talk to one another when we have struggles when we have Solutions and when we have problems because together we can really work on public education as one as it was meant to be as it was when I was a little girl growing up in Chicago when schools were fully funded so that we can remind everyone how important that is and how how very vital it is to remain friendly neighbors and to to stay a community thank you thank you next item is item G superintendent Commons Dr Streeter governing board president Lopez governing board members senior staff members of the audience uh it's it's been a while since our last regular uh governing board meeting because fall break pushed us up a week so we've had this larger than usual Gap nonetheless I think like I say every month it was it's been a busy time uh share just a couple of of highlights one I want to just commend Sarah Clem and her team for holding the first ESS parent night as part of the exceptional student services we had a nice turnout uh really for what is step one of really trying to reach out to our ESS parents and and ensure that they see themselves as partners uh with the district as we as we work uh move forward and work together for the betterment of our students I want to thank Mr Lewandowski who joined us for that event as well also today I have the opportunity to uh host the student Forum this is members of students from Mountain View MCAT and Marana High School we met at Marana High School today I had a great conversation kind of kicking off the year with regards to how the student Forum works but it's an opportunity for me to meet with students and give them a direct line of of communication the superintendent we talked a little bit about things that they would like to see differently on their campuses they had some great questions that I was able to share some great information with them with regards to attendance policies uh there was questions about a third High School uh there was questions about uh some of the the state of some of their facilities uh it's kind of a nice opportunity to educate them on what prop 491 is hoping to accomplish uh also ask the students if you could weigh the magic wand what would you change about your high school experience and that's really the impetus of what our future conversations are is really making sure that our high schools and our high school experiences are centered around what our students have identified as as needs and wants for those experiences so our future conversations will be based off of that and then also we finished with some highlights of you know what was the highlights of their schools and as you can imagine we have some very proud students uh proud of the close community and family feel that they experience at MCAT uh proud of the the school spirit and the support that they're feeling from the administration at Mountain View and proud of the uh wide array of opportunities and and really close Community Field that has experienced at Marana High School we're looking forward to Future student forums I also want to just touch base on a Mountain View visit I want to thank Mountain View High School for opening their doors to Mr Carlson and myself back on October 21st for our superintendent board campus visit we had a very busy day well thought out agenda we're able to visit several classrooms across the campus we met with ever at least representatives from every employee group on campus met with members from an outstanding student council group they were really a great group of kids and during their classroom visits we were able to see a variety of learning opportunities taking place including Hands-On science labs personalized learning student collaboration math lessons it was a Friday so we got to see some testing I don't know if we'd call that the Highlight I don't know if the kids would call that the Highlight we observed some of that and during our employee group meetings we had some incredible conversations with our staff members we I'll say a common theme that emerged from those uh was just that there's a strong Community feel and family atmosphere that's in place amongst the staff at Mountain View specific comments that we heard there was a sense of community here where one big family uh we're all here for each other we have a really good team here what I would say and I think Mr Carlson would Echo these sentiments That Mountain View Community should be incredibly proud of the work that they put in very clear that Mountain View has a dynamic Community oriented culture in place so thank you to our our Mountain View folks also want to just touch on on November 1st the Arizona Department of Education released the 2021-2022 a through F School letter grades for all public schools across Arizona these letter grades provide information about student achievement College and Career Readiness student growth and other key areas of interest to families in the general public this data is important it's informative for us really this was our first comprehensive look at school accountability scores since 2019 at least at the state level and there's much to be proud of in musd including keep in mind we have 17 schools one of those schools is Dove Mountain that was not part of the 2019 score so when I tell you that 14 of 16 schools maintain or improve their letter grades from 2019.

2022-11-11 Jennings County, IN YouTube / JCSC Stream transcript source: youtube Jennings County School Corporation Board Meeting - 11/10/22 · passage 1
there's foreign [Music] amen I just want to remind everybody that this board meeting is being live streamed so welcome those who are joining or catching us on the recorded version so the first item on the agenda is to ask if anybody is present who would need to speak on any item on the agenda or any other topic hearing none will move to new business programs I think we have an inclement weather planning yes so the state uh passed okay agenda agenda oh I'm sorry I'm so sorry [Laughter] okay so let's pull back a little bit we're not ahead of myself um so first we'll take a motion um to approve consent agenda items motion by Earl do I have a second second by Travis any discussion all those in favor six up now we'll go on to help it last spring the state passed House Bill 1093 and it limits School districts to three asynchronous learning days a year and what that means are three days where the kids are online at home working at their own pace so the options available to schools are to do traditional makeup days to use those three days you're limited to where the kids work at their own pace which is how we've traditionally done snow days the last few years or you have to do virtual live instruction meaning your student has to be in front of a camera that's live the teachers on the other side in their home on the camera live for at least half of the day um so our e-learning committee was tasked with coming up with how do we make that work within Jennings County and so there are a couple of things that we really studied the first thing we had to do was find the number of students who needed hot spots to be able to be online if we needed that so we've been working to get the word out to families and to staff and if they need a hot spot to be virtual if we were to have a snow day to get those distributed then the first thing that we reviewed after talking to different uh staff members talking to community members are the preference that the virtual learning days become the last option for us just because when students are at a babysitter or a different location than home for a snow day those are the most challenging for both teachers and students so built into a plan that we would like to be able to share with families ahead of time ahead of inclement weather so they can be able to plan ahead and know what they will need to do if we have a snow day for school so they came up with a option that has five days at the front that are not that live teacher live student on the camera and then after the sixth snow day we would need to move to the virtual live teacher live camera so just walking through these if we were to have a snow day the first snow day that we were to be called would be a traditional makeup school day so on President's Day it would be like we used to do in the past a traditional school makeup day students would attend on President's Day um the second day that we would cancel for snow and the third day and the fourth day if we were to need them would be the e-learning days and that's what we've done in the past for snow days where the kids are at home they work through their lessons at their own pace the teachers available to them but they do not have to log into live lessons if we were to need a fifth snow day this year which nature signs are saying it might be a rough winter um we would use another traditional makeup day and that would be Thursday May 25th that would allow us to still finish the school year in the week that we planned um teacher day would be the Friday of that week nothing would impact graduation or it would be done also still Before Memorial Day then day six and Beyond if we have that kind of winter that gets us to day six or Beyond that's when we would start doing virtual live learning with students at home and teachers at home and they would be on the camera so what we are going to do is begin preparing our students with practices on what this looks like so they're well versed share this information with our parents and of course when we make that auto call if that event of a snow day we'll also say on the call what type of day it is um and we'll have a longer to prepare for the virtual learning days because we will only resort to that if we get six snow days in a year and at that point we really don't want our students to lose any more live instruction which is why we would prioritize making sure we have that so that is um our plan for inclement weather for the year we'll start communicating it out with families so they're well aware as well and I have to thank the e-learning committee that put hours of work into getting this together so that we're prepared we have a plan in place and we're using the multiple options available to us to make it best for our kids and our families any questions for Nikki so this requires a vote no it's just an inform perfect um okay you're hearing no questions we'll go down under professional staff recommendations yeah have some information Ali Bertram for the jcec career and college coach Monique Christensen for a high school teacher Roxanne Norton will be doing the night school instructor position her first Sister Christine White will be a high school teacher and we have some elementary basketball coaches for fifth and sixth grade Katie Caitlyn castetter Aaron Colette Aaron green Eric 11th month in the aftermath of the war to end all wars World War one was given this moniker because of the evolution of heinous tactics involved it was the first war to feature things like modern chemical warfare and weapons like flamethrowers the original bill passed through the United States Congress in 1926 which read in part therefore be it resolved by the Senate the House of Representatives concurring that the president of the United States is requested to issue a proclamation calling upon the officials to display the flag of the United States on all government buildings on November 11 and inviting the people of the United States to observe the day in schools and churches or other suitable places with appropriate ceremonies of friendly relations with all other peoples in the aftermath of World War II President Eisenhower initiated the shift to recognize widespread of observance of this anniversary with all veterans all veterans organizations and the entire citizenry joining hands in a common purpose today at Cheshire High School we're proud to recognize and honor our veterans in schools as America originally intended it is an opportunity to both acknowledge those who served and simultaneously educate our next Generation about this power of sacrifice and service to our country on behalf of everyone in the Cheshire Public Schools I thank all of our veterans for their service and I wish everyone a peaceful Veterans Day thank you [Applause] thank you Dr Gad and Dr Solon I would now like to introduce Andrew Elliott a member of Brave who will share with you all how the observance of Veterans Day came to be [Applause] good morning everyone and thank you for joining us on this very special day Veterans Day is a time to honor all men and women who served in the military and put their lives on the line for our freedom yet you may not know how it all started this morning I would like to share the history behind this holiday and why we celebrate Veterans Day at this time of year as referenced by Dr Solon originally this holiday began as Armistice Day which was established to commemorate the truths that brought a conclusion to the Great War or World War one as it became known November 11th was chosen because the Armistice was signed on the 11th Hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918.
