I will model continuous learning and work to ensure good governance governance by taking advantage of board member development opportunities such as those sponsored by my state and National School Board associations and encourage my fellow board members to do the same thanks Joe anybody have any questions on the consent agenda can I please have a motion to prove the consent agenda motion Second Joe and Doug yes yes do we have any public comment all right do we have our people everyone here yeah I will uh I can hit a few superintendent report items and then uh that are the quick ones I'm gonna jump to B grading practices update um Mr Cuomo is sick tonight so he was going to share a little bit but um just in in your exhibits exhibit nine is a document that Dr hetovitz created and it has a q a for parents it has a series of two to three minute videos on questions around grading at the middle school this was created partially in response to some comments at our CAC meeting and I just wanted you to be aware of it so uh Dr is there anything else you would like to share on this I mean I think we've and if anyone has any questions who do they contact why are the summatives only allowed to be oh sure yeah okay so the question was why are summatives only allowed to be retaken within 10 days is that correct so generally the thought process is that if a student has gone through the learning progression in a unit and they get to the end and the summative is given if they don't retake it within 10 days then the thought processes that the learning usually they're on to another unit um I mean that's something that we can look at if there's an extended time that parents would like but that was what was in place actually for the last two years I I mean I guess I just wonder what so we have formatives receive grades one through three through five and then are there needs being addressed by the time they take the summative because looking from hearing what we hear from other parents is it's 333 and fail The Summit so how form it I get that formatives can't be take for grades change but are they retaking to the point where the kid then understands what they're supposed to be doing so the the teachers are expected to be reteaching content material that students did not um show Proficiency in or master so if they do poorly throughout the learning progression like they're doing the formatives and they're doing poorly obviously that's real-time information the teacher should be responding to but if there's an issue with the summative um two things so the teacher can re-teach and then the student can retake um but then also if they do poorly on the summative we're we're taking the the most recent learning with the formatives to into account so that it it kind of balances out the summative that's what should be happening but if that's not that might be a systemic thing that we need to address well I guess my just my concern is where as a parent where do you see the proof of your kid actually understanding it until you get to the summative because all right so say I get that I see a three on this and they need to get better X Y or Z and then the next formative there's we use two or three usually right yeah three to five is what we've told teachers okay three to five so how do you see as a parent how are you going to see that they understood what they screwed up in the first one I would highly recommend okay so checking Google Classroom I know that parents um we've talked about that before but I would highly recommend contacting the teacher and asking for their their actual proficiency scale that the teacher used so if it's not available in Google classroom the teacher should be able to articulate exactly where the student lost points or didn't perform um the standards on the proficiency scale are broken down by a learning Target so it's basically step by step they should be able to tell you which learning Target the student's struggling with okay and let us know if you want to see us on any of those emails we'll help support and provide answers as well but that's generally what should be happening is the summative retake retake um in our hand or in our little grading policy document that was created two years ago um it says that either can request it but it I think teachers are kind of encouraging students to come to them but that's a that's a whole other issue but teachers can actually talk to students about how they did and recommend a retake as well where let's say the formulas you're getting starting after like twos threes and by the time you get to the summative you get a four is the are we still going with the concept you now have you know exceeds expectation in the summit of those form of grades completely disappear so if they do poor not poorly but if they don't do as well on the format is what they do well on the summative that's that we take the most recent learning so they would get if they got a four on the summative that would be be their grade okay anything else thank you thanks Dr hedgevitz okay I'm gonna hit a couple other things now you can do the recognitions I see more people here for the recognition so that I'm gonna jump to uh we're gonna bounce around tonight so bear with it but sprinkler head project discussion the uh we all know that like at our Primary Elementary specifically we've had some issues the last few years uh sprinkler heads blowing uh I did call in the company uh that does our inspections and I said give me a solution in the packet you'll see his letter uh I wanted to know what are our options the first option is not very feasible it's a basically a complete redo of the system uh he did say that the issue we're having is related to the uh design of the system um he told me that it didn't make me feel very very much better but he did say that uh um there are a couple other schools that have the same design same Architects uh that are having a lot more issues I think one's over in Grays Lake they're on 120.

all right you good we're good all right good evening so thank you very very much for joining us this is a regular meeting of the Bartholomew Consolidated School Corporation Board of Trustees and we welcome all of you here with us we do start each of our meetings with Reflections from one of our board members and tonight I'll turn to Dr bills thank you all right good evening so um tonight I'd like to talk about John Dewey am I can you hear me okay John Dewey was a progressive and pragmatic learning theorist he was born in 1859 in Burlington Vermont which I had the pleasure of visiting this year he grew up in a family that was active in the social Community he's a firm believer in groups of people coming together to problem solve I talk about Dewey because we hear the word influencer today right so he was the influencer of his time and also of today he felt strongly that people have a responsibility to make the world better through education and social reform for schools this meant experiential learning involving the community the types of experiential learning would include social and an interactive processes where the student has the opportunity to take part in their own learning and students relate to the experiences through Pride their prior learning their prior experiences so some present-day examples would be things like project-based learning which we all know about here inquiry learning Cooperative learning problem-based learning all those types of questioning discussion dialogue experiential learning he also believed that learning is not just about the future it's about the present the processes through which students learn whether they're children or adults are just as important as the results of what they learn the processes of problem solving decision making asking questions respecting differing perspectives analyzing data creating Solutions are tools that help Learners contribute to the Democratic to a Democratic Society and this is why your math teacher wants you to show your work in math class why we hypothesize in science why we show cause and effect in history and compare and contrast in English classes in our results-oriented world we have a lot of pressure today not just K-12 but higher ed to prepare children for their careers and for their future even if education is preparation for future careers employers still want critical thinking skills such as decision making problem solving and people who can think on their own however I don't believe education is just preparation for the future I agree with John Dewey when he said education is not preparation for life it's life itself thank you Dr bills as you're able if you'd please stand and join us in the Pledge of Allegiance of the United States all right all seven of us are here so we indeed have a quorum so I'll call this meeting to order foreign if you'll notice on our screens and it is before each of us board members as we sit here the vision of our school corporation our mission and indeed our core beliefs those expectations objectives that we think about as we make the decision at each of our school board meetings we are very excited to start with celebrations so I will turn to Mr Clark and Mr Lewis to come forward and share with us all the great work here at Columbus North that's the quietest walk I know this isn't a wedding you never know thank you very much we appreciate your board taking the opportunity to recognize our students athletes our coaches and athletic director and the hard work that they put in you know you always hear that they work hard and they put in hours well by golly that's true each one of these groups have gone above and beyond and we're very fortunate at Columbus North to be blessed with the students that we have the athletes that we have and the efforts that they put in makes a huge difference I'm going to get out of the way turn time over to our athletic director who's really kind of run this uh Rodeo if you will and let him share some things about our athletes before we get going Brian all right thank you David I appreciate you guys allowing us to step in to um have our student athletes and our coaches acknowledge for the great work that they've done this year I've taken a lot of time to try to go out to a lot of our coaches practice just to see how they interact with our kids and I will say that we have phenomenal coaches in our community here at Columbus North our boys and girls put a lot of time and effort into their craft and it it clearly shows on and off the field um it's not only about the wins and losses but it's about the young men and women that they are becoming I'm proud to be the athletic director here I built a lot of great relationships with our coaches and our athletes and I hope we continue to be here after fall spring and winter sports um thank you thank you it's okay what's up I'm not for sure who's up first we'll take the cross country coaches so girls cross country thank you yes so this year our team was um worked hard and very fortunate again to to have a wonderful season first I want to thank our coaching staff uh coach Weaver has been on the girl staff for five years now with he uh coach Weinheimer was back this year helping both teams and Coach key Faber so we worked as a giant staff together so uh thank you to our three coaches uh in addition and then uh Mr Lewis and Mr Clark I like saying it that way because I'm a history guy so Lewis and Clark and so um so so thank you and in all seriousness both of these two give us such tremendous support we run a very big home Invitational here they give us tons of support for that and uh Mr Lewis anything I've asked he's tried to make happen so thank you to both of you two for for giving us a foundation and then um this year something that I'm really proud of um and it sets a tone for I think all of our kids to live up to our senior class is graduating this year with um some pretty outstanding accomplishments and um there's always been kind of this this stigma with with female Runners that they are better as they're younger and as they get older they're not as good and this group has been one of those groups across the state that has just busted that myth and so our senior class most of them have been on Varsity all four years they're going to leave here with four conference Indiana titles four sectional titles for regional titles four semi-state titles and at the state finals they finished fifth third first and second uh finishing runner-up this year so I just and as important to that are more important to that really is that all of our senior class they're going to school next year um they're all already accepting scholarship offers and different things for academics and Athletics so it's an amazing class and it sets a tone that I think Columbus North is and and should be proud of so um thank you for the school board for supporting us and putting us in that position so that's what we have all right congratulations [Music] [Applause] [Laughter] thank you all right so next we'll have coach Keith favor the boys Cross Country Coach thank you thank you school board for having us here tonight I would like all of the girls uh to stand up all the boys to stand up um right go ahead and stand up right now let's get them all around the Applause [Applause] so we the all of the kids boys and girls um both teams they train year round in the success that these men have up here and the girls that represented us at the state finals it was a whole team effort and the whole team trains through the state finals and the other thing that's important is the girls and boys workout together based on their their training levels so the success of one team built into the other so I thought it was important that we recognize all of them together you can all have a seat if you'd like yeah so congratulations to all the teams tonight the girls runner-up the boys soccer team runner-up boys tennis team doubles runners-up in the state champion golfer Ava um we as coaches are extremely proud of what these boys were able to accomplish as a team this year winning conference sectional Regional semi-state and overcoming adversity to achieve a fourth place finish at state in one of the most competitive fields ever each of the seven who competed at the state finals I'm going to have recognize each of those Mateo Mendez if you could just raise your hand Mateos he um he earned Allstate and was in had an excellent finish of 20th Clayton Guthrie um also earned Allstate at 24th he had a significant calf injury during the race and finished Neil White he greatly exceeded his expectations he was 53rd will Russell overcame severe food illness the morning of the race you finished 58th Adler Larson had a tremendous race he finished 78 78th as our fifth man he did not run the previous year so that was remarkable that he could do so well at the biggest stage and then okay and then we also had Draven Martinez and Kellen hoddle who are six and seventh Runners and Sam Hobe Hadar also competed during the state series he came in and ran at the regional and did a very good job this year he was always ready to go so finally I'd like to thank my fellow coaches um Rick sluder Leslie Weaver Rick Weinheimer it was an honor to coach with you they each had endless support and expertise also thank you to the administration uh Brian Lewis our athletic director also the secretary in the athletic department Bev Addis was amazing of course principal David Clark and our assistant principal Jen Hester who came to a lot of our meets most importantly congratulations to the whole community and the parents who support these young people as they go out every day they run their miles we can go to Parkside we can go out on the trails and we appreciate the whole community's support so thank you very much [Applause] congratulations hey good job okay the next thing we'll have is coach Glover the boys uh soccer team I'm Andy Glover I see a lot of familiar faces here I was born and raised in Columbus and I'm very familiar with the rich tradition of Columbus North Athletics I'd like to First congratulate the all the student athletes in the room what an accomplishment the dedication it takes to to delay your gratification in times like these where we have to frequently read things like wait for it well done and well done to the coaches too I know a lot of you have put in a lot of time to support your athletes so congratulations um thank you to Mr Lewis and Mr Clark and the school board to have the school board meeting as a platform to celebrate our student athletes um three years ago I reintroduced myself to the soccer team and it has been a delight and a wonderful experience four years ago the team had their first losing season and inside of three seasons they've gone from that to getting to the Pinnacle of our our level of competition and producing great results um which are which are very much worth celebrating so well done to you guys too um one thing that's notable and commendable I think is on the with this platform is to recognize and celebrate our win our mental attitude winner Flynn Keel who was recognized at the State final what an amazing job to complement the team I also think some notable recognitions for for the Indiana soccer coaches association and recognizing our student athletes our top team player was Eduardo Cordova a third team placement was Christian cardosa second team placement was Aiden Whitley and the first team placement was Mr Anthony Johnson however last night we had our banquet In This Very Room and what what stands out to me are the the academic achievements we have about 38 kids on the roster and the following were all recognized for their accomplishments in terms of meeting the all-academic standards which is over half of the team Max gruve Mr Michael Wolff Aiden Whitley Flynn Keel Anthony Johnson Nico Goto Noah Marsh Derek arau I'm so glad so glad you could be here tonight Derek um Sam lohide Connor gribbons Leo iorio Keegan Mullins Drew weed Leo peda Freddie Madero Macario Mendez Jonathan Garcia and Ben Stevens so not only are they getting it done on the athletic pitch but they're representing themselves with dignity in class in the classroom as well so well done to you guys and thank you all for allowing us to be here this evening thank you [Applause] shut up okay next up we'll have Coast Hammel with the boys tennis I want to thank the school board for giving us the opportunity tonight as well for this I apologize I did not know I was going to be talking so I do not have anything in mind specifically so if I forget anything I apologize now uh first off again as it's been said Time and Time congratulations to all the other teams that were involved this year well done for this team it's a great success for Columbus North and it's a good contribute to our assistant coach and principal for all the time and effort they have done for us I know Brian has really put a lot of time over at the tennis courts with us and done a lot for helping us with our program the other thing too is I've got to also thank my assistant coach for many many years Robin Kane he has done so much for this team he does all the extra things that sort of makes me look good I've done this for 20 some years and he's always been there and he does the extra work and gets in contacts with everybody and the team would not go as well as they are without his help a little bit about this team the Columbus North team in general we were ranked third through fifth through the entire season a great season a very young team we had a number one player who was undefeated all season long and we had a number one doubles team undefeated all season long Andre Atrium and Amrit Carr as the season progressed they went through the whole season without losing got into the state tournament played all the rounds and got all the way to the state finals where they did lose to the team in final round and finished up the season for 30 and one if I am correct these guys have been a rock for the boys tennis team their freshman year they played doubles together they did a great job last year they were split up a little bit this year they came back together I do not know what's going to happen next year but uh for what the effort that they had done for this team and our whole team in general you cannot thank them enough as well as others just like the other sports the time and effort that they put in it goes unknown for what what everyone thinks they do for that stuff so the selfishness the pride of what they do for that is great um can't think of anything else but again thank you to the administration thank you for the board for having us tonight congratulations to these guys who have done a lot of work and worked hard and we hope to be back here again next year as a team or individuals again as well okay thank you very much [Applause] talk for you so much and last but not East Coast Seavers wood girls golf stuff good evening thank you school board for your support thank you Mr Lewis Mr Clark appreciate all your help and support and encouragement I also as a teacher can stand here and Ava I'll tell you just a second here I can vouch for all those kids sitting back there I have 90 of them in my class and I can tell you what great students they are and all those things you you just talked about Dr bills with creative uh critical thinking and collaboration and all that I can vouch for them fabulous students but also fabulous fabulous athletes so I appreciate their their efforts in the classroom as well Ava bunker here Ava Ava is terrific she's she's a state champion here winning a state championship as a freshman from Ava is has been done only one other time in ihsa history for girls golf she won the state championship this year by nine Strokes and was the only golfer under par in some really really difficult conditions Ava's ultra competitive is committed to continuous Improvement it was really a special treat for me to spend three days with Ava at the state championship this year in preparation and two days at the actual tournament it's fun to watch and just fun to be be there with her watching her approach the golf and and me trying to help in any way possible but but let me tell you she earned the state championship she did I get a lot of messages and emails and texts and whatnot from people and I'm so thankful for that and a lot of people my friends always say Do you ever played with her and no are you kidding I don't like getting beat so this she's she's just fabulous fun to watch Ava's at her best when the pressure's on she just knows how to win I'm proud of her uh through this whole thing because not just because she wins but the way that she wins she wins with class and dignity she's a great teammate and a student even Ava is an excellent representative of Columbus and Columbus North High School High School Ava bunker [Applause] congratulations thank you Mr Clark and Mr Lewis the coaches athletes a wonderful fall season here at Columbus North so fitting we're used this room with the extra space we have to to recognize you great finishes there and Coach sluter I think that when I looked at times that our girls also had the fastest average time in the state is that not correct so I think we're state champions there as well congratulations again thank you thank you all very much it was wonderful to see each of you and to honor all the great work that you've done as athletes and great to hear as students as well so thank you for being with us in case you have like tons of homework you need to go working on you are welcome to leave that hard work yay check and make sure that clicker is working second yeah [Music] [Laughter] all right we wanted to be sure to give you your due smells better so we'll just very glad to see you miss strong and the entire team for Mount Healthy so we'll turn it to you it's great to follow all the athletes I was born and raised in Columbus but through all the schools too so that's exciting and we have exciting things going on at Mount Healthy as well so we're happy to be here this evening have a great team with us so I'm Amy strong principal at Mount Healthy and with me tonight I have Robin Anderson Kim Smith Emily Harris Courtney foreman and other teachers with us Pete law and Ashley shuffett and tonight we also brought to parents with us this is Lindsay and Steve heck so we wanted to talk with you tonight about parent engagement and what we are doing to bring parents and families back into Mount Healthy so first if you've not been to Mount Healthy visit us before then you wouldn't know it's really difficult to describe so in the initial initial literature that was published in 1972 when Mount Healthy opened it was called a bold architectural experiment and in a way it still is it went underwent renovation in 2013 and hasn't gone undergone any recent renovation but we are trying out new audio system in classrooms recently to help and we liked that so far um this year we have 26 certified staff 64 staff total and we are running around 423 students and our diversity is increasing slowly but increasing over the years this is one of our core beliefs as well I'm not healthy we really missed having parents and families in over the covid years and I think actually a positive coming out of those years was that we realized we missed them coming in we missed them being a part we miss conversation with them we miss that direct feedback from them so we knew that we wanted to focus on how do we get families back in the door and a part of our community in order to make that a clear Focus we listed parent engagement as one of our goals on our school Improvement plan simply put just to engage parents increase that parent engagement so we strategized at the beginning of the year of things that we could do events that we could hold and the first thing that we did of course was the typical traditional open house if it's been a while since you've been to an elementary open house um you're welcome to join us next year it's kind of like organized chaos it's so great to see the kids coming back but the hour flies by and there just really isn't time to connect with parents it's hello here's your classroom here's your teacher put your stuff down and we'll see you tomorrow so we were looking for a way to really connect with parents and give them some information about who we are how things run so what was consistent about to the eagle information nights was which were the nights we decided to host once the school year got underway was information around the schedule curriculum our PBIS system a little bit of information about the new report card and perhaps most importantly we wanted parents to understand what can you do at home to support learning so each of our grade levels are grade level bands hosted a an eagle information night this year and I'm first so I've been at Mount Healthy for 23 years and out of that I've taught kindergarten for 12.

and we need to do a roll call we just we just did one so uh I'll do the roll call uh Rachel choleski not here at the moment um let's see uh Teresa bizade not here Michelle Coello here here uh Kate Kanata here Richard gerton here uh Julie miliano here as well at least I don't see her on my screen okay okay so the policy committee meeting is starting and do you want us to review the required policies or are we waiting as you mentioned for Rachel to do so um I think why don't we get started um and because they will take a little bit of time did you all receive you all receive them ahead of time right so you've seen the links yes yes all right so I think we just start plowing through them um and hopefully they won't take too long and as Rachel comes in um you know when you all decide whether or not to push them out of this meeting we can respond to any questions she might have there okay okay so do we want to discuss uh required policy number one policy 3542.41 Food Service Personnel Professional Standards would anyone like to make a motion so that we could start the process I'll make a motion anybody want a second that we release technology I'll second that is this going for a first reading before the board yes yeah okay thank you yeah okay so so I think Kelly and I are playing a little bit of catch up with some of these um just to kind of give you a sense of where we are we've been looking at the list from Cabe of things we must have um and list of things that we need to edit and then the list of permissive things so we've kind of got a lot of weeds to come through um and we looked at the ones that are on the agenda for tonight as kind of the the simplest of that batch of ones we must have um and this is the first one right Kelly is that a good summary of Where we've been yeah so these first three that we're going to go over tonight are um cave required policies so they're ones that we should have um two of them we have nothing currently in place and one of them um the policy is old that's the third one you'll say um so they're pretty straightforward in alignment with State Statute things that were required to do and have been in place anyways such as this food services policy um but it is recommended that we have this policy on record um to document those foreign so the only thing I think Kelly and I have been talking a lot about this one um this policy gets super dense in the regulations um and so much of the running of our food service operations you know you've heard lots of people talk about it as kind of the Enterprise fund it stands alone and a lot of the functions that are described in the regulations which sit out there as as law that we need to follow um rest with Sodexo so you know they provide the dietitian it's their employee they provide the supervisor director it's their employees so much of what we were trying to do with this was to make it accessible for a district our size because it also vacillates depending on how large your district is make it appropriate for a district or size and also make reference to kind of the law out there so the laws the law is the law and part of the trick with you all in this committee is um you know you can write the current regulations as they're currently embodied and every time they change change you would need to go back in and change your regulations as opposed to kind of the way I would prefer it which is you make reference to those regulations and as those change this is kind of a living breathing interactive document so the policy is what you see first and then the regulations are really ones that we're going to follow the law you know whichever law applies to us we're going to follow always um so we did Pare this down to kind of reflect that tension with what's already out there is existing law and what changes frequently that we don't want to have to go back through and hold one of these meetings to revise and revise and revise to make the changes and if I could just ask him if you see here I scrolled the screen at the bottom under the superintendent is directed to develop Administration administrative regulations it lists the regulations that are in place relative to this food services policy which more specifically go into how we the nutrition program how we charge students for meals and so forth but this one essentially says that we are required um to have this program in place that we're required to meet certain dietary specifications that are also in place it notes um that the food services company which at the current time is Sodexo is going to be overseen by our Director of Finance which is John Spang and that has been the way it's operated for some time now and it details um the uh the program that's in place so um Kim and I have both reviewed this we've taken the policy and edited it for um Danbury to make sure that we reference the appropriate personnel there are also some exceptions in this policy for Cabe when a district is below 2500 students which does not apply to us so we've removed that and otherwise the policy is directly as recommended by cape thank you both can I make two comments one I'm happy to to turn the uh the chairing of the meeting back over to Rachel since she is now with us and two I'd like to make a motion that we adopt that we present to the Board of Trustees for adoption at the next regular meeting policy 3542.41 Food Service Personnel Professional Standards there's a motion on the floor is there a second a second seconded by Kate is that correct okay all those in favor I I motion passes oh Kelly that's one down and like 99 more to go yeah okay all right um bear with me as I get the next one up uh the next one is I think the most straightforward policy you'll ever see um this is on our minimum duty-free lunch period for teachers and it is very straightforward and simple and is already in our contractual language so I'll let you read the one-liner here and ask if there's any questions I'd like to make a motion that we adopt policy 4113.12 minimum duty-free lunch period for teachers and other certified staff and present uh to the Board of Trustees or the Board of Trustees the Board of Education of the next regular meeting second Ed by moved by Bridget segmented by Michelle all those in favor aye any opposed motion passes oh I love this committee okay uh this is your third one um this is on the Alcohol drugs and tobacco drug free workplace um and again this is um providing obviously for our school environment as being a drug-free workplace and lays out um just a standard policy again pretty straightforward foreign to uh present for first reading to the full board so moved seconded by Bridget all those in favor aye any opposed motion carries uh yeah this last one um is our pesticide application policy um this is one exception compared to the previous three policies we do have um a policy in place already for it but this is the recommended uh revision um and essentially um this policy um is really talking about when we do pesticide application um that we have to provide appropriate notice to students parents and Guardians in accordance with the law um that we make postings when those pesticide applications are are done and that we maintain written records for five years regarding all of our pesticide applications um and we have in references policy talked about um we do an initial notification currently at the beginning of the year but doing um uh more updated and more regular notification regarding uh the time at which schools are going to receive this um you'll notice here in I'm sorry which fan the school grounds are going to receive it but the notification going to families I should have specified that um and you'll notice here um that there is this option of an opt-out list or or an opt-in list I should say when parents want to be notified um and we had a conversation as a cabinet that we should just send general notification out through our school messenger um to all of our families regarding this um so that we don't need to um comply with that opt-in um All Families will be made aware of that if for some EX for some reason we decided to change this this would allow for a format to have that opt-in um but in kind of reflecting on this policy and some of the updated recommendations we thought it was important information for All Families to have so that summarizes this policy I don't know if there are any questions related to it I'd like to make a motion that we send this to the board for review and an approval hopefully sorry that's okay second Bridget moved Michelle seconded any just any questions I didn't no okay any discussion no all those in favor hi hi hi any opposed motion passes so what we have on on deck for you we we had two more on our list originally and Kelly and I have both decided we sort of decided and made a had a discussion with cabinet today or earlier this week about um there's two policies outstanding that we want to take a little bit more time with before we bring them to you um one of them is the Title IX policy and you know anybody that reads the newspaper knows that that has been wildly in flux depending on which Administration you're talking about what burdens there are in terms of um you know if you present any cases that allege harassment um and there's um as we grow as a district and the number of buildings continues to multiply um we need to do some heavy lifting on the Title IX coordinator and the process for resolving complaints under under the current law so cave has recommended some tweaking but we need to do some tweaking in terms of the size of our district for example um I am designated as the Title IX coordinator district-wide however um I do not conduct investigations at Rogers Park or at West Side because there are multiple and so those will generally run through our building administrators who are trained to conduct investigations who then will consult kind of through central office on resolution so our policy and the general policy really needs to to to straddle the fence between a one-size-fits all with one person and multiple sort of coordination and and then feeding it through central office so that's what we're looking at revising that policy again paying attention to the change the change in administration which changes the burden somewhat but also really um doing a good job at teeing up our Title IX policies in all of our buildings they are required to be posted in each building there needs to be forms available for people who want to file complaints and we have some lifting to do in that regard so what we're going to do is um we're gonna band be around a little bit more with Kevin kind of the idea deal scenario and then come back with you at your next meeting to talk about what we think that should look like because it does require some pretty good changes um and and those will be um I think in keeping with where we should be with our with our next our next iteration of this policy the other one um that we tabled for the moment and Kelly you want to talk about this one the evaluation of coaches the other one is um a requirement to evaluate our athletic coaches um so those fall under the direct supervision of our athletic director um and we do need to look at some of our systems and structures similar to those of you that have participated um in our teacher evaluation guidelines and guidance there have been some updates and recommendations for a similar level of evaluation of our athletic coaches um which has to do directly related to their employment and their rights under employment law um so we are working with Mr savastrini our athletic director to make sure that we have those procedures and structures in place and then we'll come to you with recommendations as far as the cave recommended policy of the law and the guidelines but how Danbury who's responsible in Danbury to do that how frequently we do that there is some choice that we can have in in some of the smaller systems instructors under that policy um so we just want to have the opportunity to flush that out a little bit further um and then bring that policy back to you um for for your uh you know review questions and and any feedback that you may have we have a lot of coaches a lot of coaches so it's a lot of um um a system that is Nimble enough to meet the requirements but not so overly burdensome that we're going to need more people to do it so that's what's on top three and and then after that and probably not the next meeting but then we would start to go through the series I think we had talked about at the last meeting as recommended um by cab um so one series at a time uh to just look at these are all of our policies in place there are some minor wording tweaks that they're recommending on some policies that haven't been updated in some time um so depending on the series it may be one possibly two meetings um but we can put together an agenda what Kim and I were thinking and certainly open to the group for feedback is put together an agenda for each series and then make the decision if it's a lengthier series um some of the ones that get more in the employment and HR department or the educational uh evaluation supervision those are a little bit more lengthy and we might want to devote more than one meeting but there are 10 different series that we'll need to review from the zero to the 9000 Series um and so that will be a process over the upcoming probably year or two to go through oh and does that include our bylaws um we just we just went through those yeah I think those were in the uh don't quote me what series but they were linked in one of the series so a lot of them that we've just recently updated we'll let you know you know this was updated in the last six months we might we don't necessarily need to make changes or even review everything but any one of the policies will be flagged um through our cave audit if they recommended that we look at it or reconsider it okay thank you those are our 9000 Series and we did just I feel like we just worked on them and we devised and yeah I mean the trick here is to make them broad enough that you don't have to go in to change them all the time but not so broad that they're gutted and meaningless and that's really the trick and then right before the pandemic when we originally had the audit done I want to say we added in um probably 15 plus policies at that time and majorly revamp some of them so um there was a lot of work done and then it was kind of solved and now we're back so I do think some of the series will go through relatively quickly um where other series we're going to have to look at a little bit warmed up yeah okay does that sound like a good game plan to everyone yes yes any questions when is I don't have the schedule in front of me what is the next policy meeting on the calendar give me one sec sure did we do one in December I think there's genuine I think it's January but I'm just checking December I'm pretty sure it's January look for anyone it's February yeah I'm showing February 15th yeah I see that one too six o'clock on the 15th okay yeah okay if there's a lot of work to be done do you want to you know add another meeting in just so that we can move the process along yeah we could do um you know we could stack a policy right before one of our regular meetings in January [Music] that might be a good idea it sounds like there's an awful lot to review and I don't think I'm looking at the 18th I know did we do tonight we're doing what policy at five and finance six yeah we have a community relations we could do a five or a six depending on which ones you guys go to if you want to go to both meetings we could do a five or if you want to do one meeting we could do a six are you thinking January 18th Camp yeah let's does that date work for everybody we can slide it right in that day I thought you're thinking five o'clock on that day okay sounds good and we'll keep so we'll keep the rest of the schedule the same but add this in as an additional Yes sounds good okay next one all right okay um motion to adjourn so moved moved by case second time Michelle all those in favor

the t41 lottery the teachers are like when are the teeth it's not the big incentive they got last year but maybe we could start doing that right and then the Showcase we want to talk about that a little bit oh yeah we just do it once a month showcase one coach one uh male athlete and one female athlete that stood out and the coaches nominate I choose who the coach is and then the coaches nominate who the kids are and as kids that are performing well not just like it's not a star football player the star volleyball player somebody who's doing something great on a team but also succeeding in the classroom and doing like for this month it was the two girls who organized the entire entire Powder Puff events the first one I guess we've had in a long time and it was a huge success and they put a lot of work into it kids got really excited about it and so it's just kids that do that are athletes but do a lot more off the court off the field off the mat whatever it is and don't necessarily always get recognized for it let's try to shout them out at the end of every month and let the coaches have a have a voice and who gets shouted out as well foreign group is going to be able to go to some competitions up in Washburn here coming up and so we're getting the information on that it's free somebody love that and the upcoming events I think that's what she was going to do is you know do a snapshot of that and put it on social media stuff but you get that it's just where people go maybe we want to be yeah on Facebook or not that's just where people go yeah you know like people all the time well what's the score what's the score I mean they just you know oh yeah we do have two girls right now at uh National forage comedian s and ironically right after I put this article out there was an accident and then Mr Wilson also had to do it it's a real shame thank you no one had any sympathy either they always said welcome to Kansas and it's not Mr Wilson hitting the deer the deer hit Mr Wilson I think that was the bigger as we know went to your accidents that's usually the way it works yeah girl one I love that was unbelievable I was there too crazy the greatest athletic feet so far this year winning the evening contest it is the hottest hot wings oh my gosh just one we did that I did the one on Mental Health we do have Kathleen Elliott is our work as a social worker for us and also the middle school students and academics and social work um her caseload is hitting um full I say full we are using the Sip team process to refer and that she works with our students on the campus as well and that's going really well kids are very comfortable and so we have that outrageous with our kids I say thank you and another family well as I got here and it is it has been kids are I know kids want to talk about it they want somebody to reach out to and it just gives them another Avenue so I I just appreciate that for our kids to have that opportunity so as an interventionist position that we created we're working with 245 and as far as with the special ed Cooperative half the salary is coming from Special A Cooperative the other half is coming from Professor funds in the next two years and Kathleen is doing a terrific just got it I say she's got a good number of kids and families she's working with so it's been a huge Plus okay any other questions or comments for the hiking room capable of launching superintendent's report oh technology report I'm sorry yeah come on no internet questions for Craig on his report do you need anybody else to did you already have the meeting with Sheriff Johnson and I'm sure Smith or is that coming up uh we we already had that meeting oh I'm sorry okay that's not for create coolness for me right okay um oh with my with my reporting I guess any other that's so wrong technology thank you okay okay American educational weekends this week again just cannot thank our our staff and them for everything that they do uh and you guys are also a part of that as well and we've got uh tumblers for the staff that are really nice with our branding or our traditional Wildcat on there so again thank you to our staff they just I say vent terrific and continue to do great things uh that's the best part of my day when I get to go into the buildings and see the teachers teaching and students learning it's one pictures I should as I said the most fun that I have so again thank you to everybody and we'll have a couple of other items this week for week you look at that document there's a lot of incredible things that we're doing here and and it's just not um by accident there's a lot of people involved with what's happening in in Burlington and the excellent things that are happening and like I said James and I went to the kasb conference you may mention that in the board items here later but you go to other you guys say you go to other places like you did for leadership for tomorrow and you also go to other you know like events like kasb and you talk to other people and you feel good about what you have here and then also when you see some things that they're trying to do at some of these sessions that you go to watch and you're like saying to yourself we're doing that already it makes you feel really good about yourself so again the keysa document I'm not going to go over everything you guys understand the accreditation piece it's a five-year cycle and then it starts back over next year will be to show that we are doing a really good job here in our district so um the star awards um I shared with you a a letter from Dr Watson so we received some star awards it's always nice to get some recognition from the state so academically prepared for graduation we have a copper award which means we're at the state average of 49.9 I think we'll be in even better shape as we move forward here with some of the things that are happening here at the high school with some of the pathways and so on and so forth we may even improve on that internships pathways um again just uh you know just to keep kids more interested and and keep that uh that piece going for for them you know as they move forward with their academic career graduation rate silver rate which means we're between 93 and 94.9 percent at Burlington High School and then the post-secondary affected Miss bronze that means we're between 50 and 59.9 of our students they are in the industry recognized certification while in high school or they earn a post-secondary certificate they could earn a post-secondary degree or students that are enrolled in post-secondary classes in the first are students our staff at all buildings elementary middle and high school everybody contributes to these awards that we receive and our families in the community and the emphasis that we all put on education so it's nice to have our culture of Excellence recognized by the state department so we'll get some information now to the Coffee County Republican for a promotion of that as well um and then the last item I just kind of came up with this site Council linkage if you could pull up that first at Coffee County Parking layout three document okay we had multiple meetings over what's going to happen when construction begins to happen so that for the Justice Center so to give you a quick rundown the area where you had the the old church that's been demolished and that's been leveled out there's going to be a parking lot that will go there and that's going to be coming sometime before construction can start at the Justice Center they're hoping that that's going to be done before March tentatively the the county is hoping that again they'll start breaking ground and going into construction mode sometime in March so with that being said that creates an issue with the elementary school and potential the construction right here close to the building and the parking lot so uh that we have the angle parking and then the circle uh hug and go drop off so we've had meetings again Sheriff Johnson under Sheriff Smith Mark Davidson at the from the city uh streets um our our group Darla uh Brad Griffin myself margarito Solano and so with that being said um kind of give you an idea of what this is going to look like so there were some pictures uh hopefully that can be increased Maybe thank you thank you there we go okay so so think in terms of I want to say um Eighth Street which would be the street west of the elementary school there's nothing going to change on 8th Street you know we'll shoot another picture up here in a little bit now off of Neosho Street to the north where our digital display is and the tree line is the sit and this is not going to be at our cost no cost to us at all the city should be the county you get that right and Darla please China something and the county is going to pay to put in about 30 parking spots where they're going to take out the grass area and that'll be from the street to the sidewalk and they're going to put in about 30 parking spots along Neo show they'll be angle parking spots it's not I mean we're not it's not we're not totally in love with this idea but it's it's the best option that we possibly have to add that parking that we're going to need when everything starts to happen and we'll talk about why here in just a minute so again parking will come up to that sidewalk then if you go to 7th Street there that 7th Street that's kind of the in between um like I say the Courthouse parking and and our building there and that's along where you come up and do the Circle Drive where the hug and go it shows on this picture that there's going to be some parking spots just right to the I'm going to say right to the west of the construction for the new Justice Center that's not going to happen there are no parking spots there maybe some angled parking spots and it will occur if if they if they move the building closer which they've just gotten permission to do move the the construction closer to the existing courthouse so there could be some angle spots there but it will not impact that street 7th Street not impact that street and our worry was that we were going to all of a sudden lose a main artery for drop off and pickup they are going to limit any type of work as far as construction goes they won't will not have any type of work on like for example big heavy dump trucks and things like that for might say seven in the morning to 8 15 in the morning no traffic on 7th street or from we're going to say 2 30 to 350 or to 3 30 during the pickup so we're going to actually that that turned out better than what we anticipated they will not that that will still be ours to access and to use now the one thing we probably won't have is that angled parking there here because when they start to work and construction starts to happen there's going to be dust flying it's going to be dirty around there they'll be heavy equipments going along 7th Street there and you just don't want cars to get damaged by heavy equipment so that's where that 30 parking spots on the o-show essentially we trade out for the 17 to 20 angle spots that are right there on 7th street I'm going to stop there do you have any questions up to this point so far yeah well it it is but um but it's it's bad I'll tell you what it's better than what it could be because it could be Niagara we could be parking on Niagara Street over I'm going to say south of the playground the Elementary playground or south or east I'm gonna say east east of the Elementary playground on 6th Street so it's it's not the not it's not perfect but it is the best like I said the best option that we have right now taking um grass area yeah like between the size already gone yeah because at one point they said maybe on that and there's also like two decorative plant posts and they'll build an island around that so initially it was going to be 35 spots but they're now saying like 30.

and we lived here within a month we figured out where the Mason-Dixon line was takes two sides to fight but there's a not a very Unified School here and uh it's never changed to my knowledge and I don't know what the problem is but this school board right now is helping us kind of a kind of good if I can use that term you're closing a school that's going to affect a bunch of kids a bunch of families community and I think it's a vendetta for some reason you yourself said that the reason that school was wanting to close was it was time for us to feel the pain of a Building closed so that's not have been dead I don't know what it is so don't shake your head because you said it so that's that's where I think it's all coming from I think there's some animosity for some reason now he's getting out of hand next to Adam on the agenda is the audit District have uh I went out of the brown principal with Adam's Brown and I'm going to go through this kind of quickly I think did you all get a copy online okay um hopefully you've had a chance to take a look at it and maybe have any questions at any time as I go through it I'll go through the letter first um a single letter this just lets you know if we had any difficulties encountered while we are performing the audit or if we had any disagreement management we didn't have any if we had any internal control issues or any recommendations with enteral controls we would also note that in here we didn't have any just general recommendations so you will not see anything in there for that so then I'll go ahead and flip on over to the audit report and on page one two three and four this is where we issue our opinion and on page at the very on page one at the very top we do give you an adverse opinion on Gap because you wave Gap and you follow canvas regulatory basis so the third paragraph down is where we're giving you an unmodified opinion on regulatory basis and that's the highest opinion you can receive um that's basically stating that we believe there are no material no statements then the letter goes on to tell you what responsibilities of management is versus what's responsibility of the auditor um it explains kind of fraud how fraud works and the financial statement we are auditing for fraud we are auditing the financial numbers themselves to make sure they are correct sometimes that's misconstrued so I do like to point that out we also had to do a single audit this year because you exceeded 750 000 in federal expenditure so you'll see that additional garbage there in the letter on page five is where we are uh this is a financial statement that we issue that opinion on and at the end of the year you had unenccovered crash and this is episode 6 30 of 1.1 million and that is a decrease of 173 000 in the private prior year and um 42 000 of that is from Esser expenses that had not yet been reimbursed so it's really a decrease of about 130 000 and most of that is in your Capital outlay fund and some of it is in your virtual education fund relatively the other funds state consistently the same the next several pages are the notes to the financial statement kmag did not have any large changes or significant changes that you're going to see or any new but notes that were required so I'm not going to go through each of those but on the very last page of the footnotes which is on page 13.

307. we're the number one employer in the Chino Valley are we absolutely I believe so yes um asba annual conference we right now we have Mike and Annie and Cindy attending the annual conference um Cindy Daniels will be doing a presentation on that Friday morning um and so pay attention to your program and um it's on you want to share the title or sure on creating Community Partnerships in rural communities yes Thanksgiving Community meals we've been soliciting donations to the foundation to help pay for uh 20 meals to be given out to meaty families in the in the district and um we have reached that we're going to do another solicitation for hams to give hands out in December during our food pantry distribution but we'll be we're actually not going to be delivering a whole lot we're only going to be delivering about four I talked to Lori Marley our um family resource specialist today and most of the people are coming to pick up so that that actually is better for for us um and so we only delivered about four and uh and I can tell you that the families are genuinely appreciative when they get this in the meals about 80 is what the cost of the meal is it's the Safeway meal with the turkey great turkey gravy stuffing vegetable and then um uh mashed potatoes rolls and then also we add on to that uh pie and whipped cream so it's about 80 and out the door is what it what it costs they are not they are actually safely prepared for this is the Safeway um makes it easy although we're buying the hams from Safeway I believe or from from Sodexo I believe um sourcing them from their vendor for us so yeah it's they're coming up it's they just come in a bag the whole meal comes in a bag and it's about prepped at Safeway I'll pick them up on that Wednesday morning and then we'll come here and sort because they get cases of mashed potatoes or cases of turkeys and that kind of thing so we sort here and then um moving to the Family Resource room and if you'll get delivered um we're talking a little bit earlier about Thanksgiving lunches this is the today was Heritage Middle School which I thought went really well I want to thank Sodexo for that the the the staff worked really hard in the kitchen to make sure that we didn't run out of food and serving the line and we all ate afterwards and that was nice and so I want to thank um the HMS Administration for for running it smoothly and and seduction on that tomorrow's the high school um and then on Wednesday is Territorial and then we finish up on Thursday at Del Rio school which Del Rio is probably the biggest territory the territorial has actually if you think about four grades um when you when you throw on preschool um and then Kinder through second so um but yeah uh they they rival pretty much each other they're pretty pretty close um as far as participation I just think that this is such a great deal I love this part of fear whenever he's all the parents and grandparents even if their kids don't want to talk I've talked to a few parents that want to embarrass our kids by showing up at the high school so seriously okay thank you um superintendent's evaluation the superintendent's evaluation is in December yeah there are actually three separate tools that you could use in the evaluation um I've included two in your book which are policy or exhibit cbi-e there is a um another tool that was a addendum to my contract that is in there as well and then you guys will be approving a new contract hopefully that's up for consideration later in the evening and there's an addendum to that also and that's actually attached to this so um the last page is that so um we'll have I imagine you'll have that discussion um during the the executive session for my evaluation but um I have to give you the the tools then you guys decide which tool you want to use so we did it in May yeah yeah we do it it's twice a year the formal evaluations in December and then submit even though it's end of the school year but it's a mid calendar year evaluation in the meantime foreign calendar we have the feedings coming up we have our governor governing board meeting on December 12th along with the swearing-in asba annual conference on the 14th through 16th and then during winter break we just close the district down uh the 12-month employees still come in and work but because of vacations and people being gone and Staffing we just close all the schools and the district office um to the public there's still people working but we just it the Staffing doesn't work out where we can keep people here so John can I ask one question that's not on your superintendent's report sure you haven't do you have an update on the school proposals private school housing proposals oh the teacher age teacher um we are working through we've we've got some the the right now we've extended the RFP um we're working through some issues with the town um and I have a meeting a week from tomorrow with uh the town uh I don't know what their their time what's the title do you know the department of development yeah developmental development services the development services staffed they they are um uh what we've been told in the past they they've come up with a new interpretation of of the rules um based on what um are different than what we've had um prior so we need to have that discussion um or have you extended the deadline we didn't tell the middle of December I think December I think it's the 17th oh okay this is the second extension right here we were hoping to get some vids in front of us by October 17th I asked the question and the the contractors have been very um good about making sure that they're you know what they're going to give us is something that we can actually build and that's now it's kind of on us to kind of do that negotiation with the town um to make sure that that the contractors have the leeway that we're hoping are they I don't want to extend this too much but are these changes that the town wants in their interpretation of the code going to have significant cost increases um yes it could be a deal killer okay that's what I'm concerned about so the rules can be like grandfathered yeah well I I don't know we just needed to go into that meeting and I you know I've spoken to our attorney they have I don't know if they've spoken to their attorney but we're you know we need to share some information that they may not know and things like that so I'm sorry to ask now yeah all right that's it as far as my report goes all right thank you um we're going to move right on to item 61 um Mr Livingston the financial reports great thank you Administration ladies and gentlemen staff of the district a quick look at the month and the October 31st of 2022.

so 38 000 votes yet to be counted but we would like to congratulate Mr President Mr Steven Austin and Mrs Ruth ahmadias within our audience who will be joining our board in January so we're not anticipating that the votes will change um that much to affect Mr Australia but again we do have to wait till the officially call the election um but I would also like to thank Mr price for her years of service to the Continental School Board her nosport meeting will be in next month in December and then our new board member will join us um ideas in January we will continue holding strong and again once it holds always a cult and we appreciate all of our community members that went out to vote so we really appreciate your continued support of Continental teaching enrollment update you will see we're still standing we have 652 students we are down by eight students from last year at this exact time we will be getting a letter out to our parents and this will be on our website but I wanted to inform everyone officially that our Netter grade is the fee and appeal has been filed for an error in the static file of how a student was coded correcting the error should change our Netter grade to an A so the appeal was submitted today and we will know on December 9th so we just have to hang tight for our major celebration but we are hopeful with the data and the information that we had the static file that Ade released October 21st was there was it was different than the final one that they released on December 31st so we were able to find the error one theme that I want to reiterate to our parents and our students is that this is one student that's going to make the difference that's going to be able to bump us up to and behave if it all works as planned so when we talk about every student counts and all students count it is true because one student an error in the file can make a difference right to our progress so I want to thank our staff for everybody's continued hard work and all our students who are progressing and all parents who are working so hard especially through coven we did see a lot of dips in the data nationally which I shared last month that we did not follow that trend of the dip in pla and math like the nation did so we know that we are working hard and we will continue to work hard and hopefully get our Aid December night continuous Improvement we continue to look at our NWA reports on our roadmap to Excellence we did discuss having to move 10 of our students from partially proficient or minimally proficient into proficiency so we've been working with our teachers we've had in the data we've had our first day to date today with fourth grade teachers and the leadership to identify students or are they how do they compared to the state assessment to our formative assessments that we have now in NWA and that's going to affect our we teach and enrich that we are doing weekly as well and uh January we will have a curriculum and assessment update on the agenda to review specific progress and inform our new board member of all the teaching and learning that's going on and where we are with curriculum and where we our businesses National letter writing day was today as we celebrated National thank you letter Day by posting the breakfast for many community members to show our appreciation so we are very appreciative and we had a great turnout as you can see the line for buying books and also um our parents and our students who helped find kindness pledges to be up around our school yarn advisory and student advisory and climate surveys so we are going strong with our parents and student advisory again we count on our parents and our students to be the eyes of the years for us as a leadership team in terms of what's working what do we need to improve on what's what's happening in classrooms so we need everyone to do their climate surveys so far um we have 217 students who have responded we need more so teachers will be doing those this week as well um staff we have 16 responses and we have 100 staff members 100 staff members but we need to make sure we get those numbers up by Friday we plan to close the window for the assessment on Friday but if we need to extend it through Thanksgiving we will because we really do want input and we only have 49 parent responses so please get into the website and the links are on the website for you to know of course hold time and data binders the whole time once a month the leadership team and support staff will check students data finders we'll listen to the students share their goals and academic progress at their portfolios so we're also hoping boys and girls that you share your data binders and your information with your parents K through five have actual binders and sixth through eighth grade have digital binders so we will be displayed and showcasing our advisors that are January board meeting as well so be ready to show your steps um but I said it still doesn't help we're still having this happen periodically so what uh I think option two in the uh pack in the on his letter is probably our best option and that's where they would go through the system and and make sure everything is pitched right so that uh that water is supposed to hit certain areas we are doing draining every two weeks once it gets cold to prevent which is quite a task for our for our group our guys but our crew but um we're committed to do that just so we can make sure that uh um do our best to prevent the problem from happening but he told me no matter what we do it could happen again so I just I'm just telling you that I'm going to do everything we can to make it not happen because it's not fun when it does but uh so I'm gonna probably uh talk to them about re-pitching doing that work sometime but in the meantime we'll be doing we'll be draining the system every couple weeks throughout the winter to make sure there's no water in the lines so yeah why didn't you like option three actually uh yeah I'm glad you brought that up he says in option three that the that the fire marshal approved him cutting those off and they did they did yeah I was gonna say if the fire marshal approved it then yeah that would be the best option that's that's that would be the best option those are the ones yeah yeah and those those are the ones we have the most problems with um the uh but the fire marshal told me specifically that we can't do that so I don't know where I was gonna ask him where which Fire Marshal he talked to because they told me like can't do it because I because we they have cut a few of them off already or we had problems and they never I guess we can't officially if I can get the approval that would be the best option okay I think I think we're waiting on one more person so let me uh see if I can hit item item D is an immunization updates uh we were in very good compliance this year item e is a staffing plan timeline this is something similar that I do every year just sharing it with you I will start meeting with administrators in January we talk about Staffing for next year I just want to outline that timeline for you item F Master board member status congratulations to Joe and Lauren I said it wrong earlier join Lauren we're done the highest level established and Vivian and Doug were distinguished so good job congratulations to that right and then we will save the rest of my items I believe for after we get the recognitions done so we'll go ahead and start with switch back to our recognitions so Kevin if you'd want to join me are you gonna be our photographer awesome is Isabella here Isabella come on up [Applause] so Isabella submitted some artwork and you you drew this right first I thought it was something that was printed it was so good so um and this was submitted to the Illinois art education Student Art Show so congratulations we wanted to recognize you and we're proud of you and uh and how you while you represent a Big Hollow we'll give her a little round of applause congratulations congrats and Nathan Kemp come on up Nathan Nathan is an IESA State qualifier in Cross Country so we want to congratulate you for that I know that's a big accomplishment and you ran in of meet with how many kids were running you think 238 230 in One race that's a pretty uh pretty crowded event wasn't it yeah a lot of fun a lot of people uh-huh uh Mr Walters coach Walters do you want to share anything I saw you here nice job nice work good job great great congratulations [Applause] congrats Nancy okay all right I'm gonna call up Carrick Hubbard Perry could not be here in September but Kerry was nominated and selected by the whole staff for the September employee of the month and uh I'm gonna let past you mind talking about Carrie or no come on up come on up Lucas shirt first uh don Lucas shared Carrie amazes me on CE while she does the job of Behavioral investors specialist day in and day out she has stepped up to the task and you can see the change in some of our toughest behavioral students who really need that extra support in learning the coping skills and expectations of being in the classroom and interacting with other students socially to be successful she is asked to help train teachers and other paraprofessionals in these buildings to help these students probably one of the hardest and most frustrating jobs right now sometimes it is people like Carrie who go unnoticed and come to school each day ready to change ready to make a change in the world so I'll piggyback on that um I nominated Carrie um always willing for her role this year so she uh she created by bass and by Dawn and voted on by the entire staff so congratulations Carrie and we'll take a quick picture here okay all right very well deserved thank you all right can I have Bridget Schuler back come on up Bridget [Applause] okay now I'm gonna read is anybody else here to speak on Bridget yes come on come on see Mrs Byrd is going to speak on Bridget's behalf and I know you see Bridget Jacob all right good to see you Jacob yeah Jacob's my guy every day all right I'm gonna let you speak I'm nominated Bridget because well she's amazing with Jacob and with all the kids in my class she's amazing with me she's just like we met at that Kagan strategy thing back in August and I was like please let it be mine please let it read my room but um she is so good she's so committed she so sincere and she truly loves the kids she loves everything about her job she's so good with Jacob um just think that Big Hollow is so lucky to have her we're so blessed to have her and someone who cares as much as she does and puts in the effort that she does every day when she comes to work couldn't be said better right there stay right here [Applause] yeah I think you have something to give I think you have something new oh that's awesome not me that is does that make it worth it Jacob stay up here Jacob stay up here Jacob let's get a picture messy all right Jacob okay awesome good job there you go thank you and that was uh that was great thank you fabulous [Applause] okay all right Nicole come on up foreign I gave the wrong plaques away just so if you have one as student a month I'm gonna ask I'm going to ask Mrs Lancaster to come on up Nicole was nominated by Mrs Lancaster or her teacher and uh I think Mrs Lancaster is going to share a pretty special story with us this is Nicole and I nominated Nicole [Music] Nicole um well I knew from the beginning of the year she was going to be awesome but we have from Ukraine and this girl not only speaks English she speaks Ukrainian and Russian talk about a brain in here and she was a little bit nervous um Dr Bianca Lana reached out to Mom and Dad and they said no she can do that because she was a little shy and this girl has stepped it up she has been a friend a mentor she's helped me she helps the other students and she she's helped our student make friends I think that if every new student was welcome to Big Hollow and even the United States like Nicole has welcomed and helped our friend annalina that this would be a pretty darn good country so I'm really proud of her and she's her confidence everything about her is just blossomed I love having her in my class I might keep her forever there you go and this is why we this is why we do this for things like this this is make this is pretty special so thank you for how you're uh being such a great friend okay awesome thank you everybody that came for the recognitions you can stay for the board meeting if you want but you don't have to some pretty cool recognitions tonight for the board I am trying to get academic spotlights but I'm not having luck that's where our staff comes and presents I just can't not having a lot of luck with that right now all right going back to item 11 superintendents report um I'm gonna go into uh exhibit eight which is the school report card presentation so Dr hezovitz and I are going to team up on this one if you've looked at your packet ahead of time you notice this is a lot uh we're not going to go through this page by Page um but please let me know if you have any questions so I I didn't I wanted to make sure you had the information um but I also don't want to overwhelm you tonight and just read off slides so I'm going to summarize points that I think are really important for us to talk about and then but please just let me know if there's something you saw that you have questions about um and this is going to be a little harder since I can't refer to a screen so uh but I'm on exhibit eight and I will have the rest of this for you too in case you don't have it okay okay um start off the exhibit or the the packets or this exhibit with our district mission and vision just to point you to that uh and the goals of specifically goal one is ensuring high levels of growth for all Learners and uh we specifically have three targets there develop a standards-based reporting system strengthen systems of support for all Learners and enhancing our professional Learning Community practices those are three very important things that we are doing it's uh it's a part of um uh our strategic action plan and we've got a lot of good work going on throughout the district on that I'm going to skip now down to the Illinois school report card summary um there's a there's a header page that that has the link to the Illinois school report card on it um but then I'm gonna go to the next page you should see a green border on the page at the top it says Big Hollow sd38 um if you I tomorrow I am going to send a link out to our community uh with with a little more information on the school report card I want to review it with the board first so that's why I'm doing that tonight uh this this document here what I did was uh I didn't print off the entire report card because it's it's uh it's pretty massive so what I what you'll see on these pages that have the green uh I think all of them have green yeah I have a green header on them are you're going to see a snapshot of some items that I pulled out of there and then we are going to share some of our student assessment data in a different way um it is all on the school report card though uh so I'm gonna flip through this a little bit and highlight so the uh there is a school level finances page I think you might find some things there that are uh somewhat interesting but uh it's nothing there that we haven't talked about before I'm gonna the uh the on the second page that says School level finances there is a I want to point to you there is a an area that breaks down by school what our expenses are and what you'll see is that we have prioritized our expenses at the primary school that's that's expenses per child per pupil expenses uh so you'll see our highest zip primary second is it Elementary third is at middle per pupil expenses um we purposely have devoted more resources to that building to try to front load our services and support for kids uh District environments page starts with District finances expenditures by fund I'll be honest with you I I've included these in here for your for you to look at but they they're always running behind on their financial data so the data I give you is going to be up to date this is a year or two behind depending on what what data they're looking at but you'll see that some of this is 2021 uh student enrollment um I'm going to there's there's a page that says student enrollment at the top what is it and there's some data on that page so I'm going to skip to the next page that says a five-year race ethnicity Trend I don't know if you can see it looks like this uh I think that there's some there's some you'll see if you look at that our demographics are changing from 2016 which is the far right follow it to the left and you'll see our demographics are changing in the different uh uh ethnicities race and ethnicity the next page is something that I think is that we need to be aware of too it's the five-year ell Trend so uh in 2016 our English language Learners uh were made up of was made up of 6.7 percent of our population is now 11.1 we've seen a significant increase in our El population over the last five years chronic truancy is chronic absenteeism is in there these numbers in my opinion are high I mean well not my opinion they are high compared to Prior years uh but with uh this is going off last year's data where we were it had kids being quarantined and so the absenteeism numbers were high they were still lower than the state averages which did surprise I mean that I guess it doesn't surprise me but uh we were significantly lower in state averages on that but I still think it's it's higher than typical for us chronically truant is absence that's absence without uh excused cause uh our numbers pretty low compared to the state uh you see teachers information on the next page which next page is uh um The Chronic attendance yeah uh that that is uh absence you mean The Chronic absenteeism or the teacher information it says their attendance rate is 59 compared to the state which is 66.

and add 45 minutes to that they have extracurricular activities which they have missed um religious education I have already been written up once because I have been late three times in this trimester my husband does work from home some of the times but he is working from home Matt always able to grab our kids I am here with another fellow mom who we are trying to work with working to find a way to get our kids like carpooling in the you know to try to find a solution our boss is overcrowded there's 71 people if I understand correctly on a bus right now we have 68 my kids are getting bullied on the bus and not just my kids but other kids on the bus and the amount of time that they are I know you boss when they do get picked up or drop off is longer than usual I feel that it is okay I've been patient the first trimester is already under about we really need to do something about this I cannot be the only parent that has this issue and we have to figure out a way if there is no buses we have which there has to be transportation and as parents being asked to just wait till the bus gets there is no longer an option for us or the other parents that I have been speaking with my other option is to quit my job which I really love so I am asking the board to do something about it to help us out parents that work and to come up with a plan for the next trimester the sooner the better please I ask you thank you thank you thank you all right state report our data and Improvement efforts item 6.1 is an informational item on the school report card and what we're doing to improve academics here in SD 308 uh Mrs dalquist our associate superintendent for Educational Services is here to present to the board stalkowist it's all yours [Music] all right first starting off with some good news that I think the board is already aware of when the summative designations came out all of our schools are either at commendable or exemplary if you recall in the past we've had 10 schools that were for targeted assistance so we brought that list from 10 down to zero so we'll start off with a little bit of a celebration there and then get into some of the nitty-gritty I am not going through everything on the Illinois report card this evening I've chosen some highlights um from this we're going to look at the percentage of our students that are proficient in both Ela and in math we will look at some of the growth data and then we will spend a little bit of time on Science assessment and a few other things uh I think it's important as we go through to kind of compare ourselves to other neighboring districts it is important to note that every District in the state of Illinois is available with their data on the Illinois report card so I've chosen just a few um so I've uh throughout the presentation there's Naperville 204 Plainfield West Aurora Yorkville ourselves and then the state for comparison the next slide is just some more additional information from things about money salaries teacher ratios those types of things that may play into some of the questions that you may have then this next slide is really looking at what are the differences and how are we doing compared to where we were pre-covered and as you can see we've decreased a lot we had 43 percent of our students proficient in ela prior to covid now that's down at 32 and that is a Statewide Trend I've shown the state average there as well this next piece is by grade level of what it what it's like and you can see it's not always the same as we go through for reading iar fourth grade is the highest then this next piece I chose some of the demographic groups to look at and I wanted you to know that there are a lot more available than what I put on the charts I chose for the racial demographics white black Hispanic and Asian the other categories are available on the report card site as well then I'm not going to go through each of these slides on all of the data that is behind there what I have done is highlighted some of those in some narrative slides but I did want to provide the background information if people were wanting to look at the nitty-gritty on all of these things so this is just looking at our percentage of students that were proficient on the Illinois assessment of Readiness for ELA with all our low income our non-low income I spend quite a bit of time looking at the difference between boy and girl achievement looking at how we are doing with different learning styles that is something that we've been worried about in this district for a while and a few years so we continue to look at that and then of course looking at the different racial demographic groups as well this next piece is a little hard to explain but it is all of the growth pieces of data so the state looks at those students that had scores this year which was last spring and then what their growth was the time before that and Compares students from similar scaled scores to those interesting and really important that everybody knows if you're a third grader from last year you can't have growth data because that was your first year of taking iar it's also really important to note that if you weren't here during covid and you were in remote instruction you also don't have a score from some of those years so we anticipate as we go and look at growth data in years forward that we will have a significant change in the number of students that go into this piece so some of the key findings um SD 308 like many districts around the state is not at pre-covered levels yet I know people are saying how long will it take I'm not sure yet I'm around I have to keep track of that we are slightly above the state average for the all category we do have opportunity gaps with boys scoring lower than girls and Black and Hispanic students scoring lower than white students and Asian students our growth rates are lower than the state in every demographic group other than black students and then there is similar growth for each demographic so as you look at these there are celebrations but there are also great opportunities for improvement that we need to continue to address this next piece is the high school piece of the SAT reading data and again there are all the scores but it's important to note that we score better than all the comparison districts that I chose except for Indian Prairie in the demographic groups of all low-income girls and white students our boy girl opportunity Gap is larger than the comparison District so what we've seen with our own data through fast bridge and other pieces is that we are right to continue to address that in the instructional styles that would be needed to lower that opportunity Gap and then we do score better than the state in all demographic groups other than Asia this next piece is just a slide on how our English Learners are doing and also our children with disabilities which the state now calls CWD and those students that have IEPs what I really want to get into is what are the things that we're going to do to improve and it's important to note that we do not wait until the state comes back with the test scores this work starts way in the spring and continues into the fall we have a district Improvement team composed of District administrators principals and assistant principals from the different levels and we get together and look at not only state data but our own fast Bridge assessment data and also looking at our classroom walkthroughs on what we see our good instructional practices and not and then we build a plan and each of our schools has a school Improvement plan that is aligned to this as well so these are some of the things that we're doing for reading as you know we do have a K-8 literacy framework the school Improvement district-wide team now has six different design teams one is on reading at K-8 we also have a High School academic design team that is working on that and our framework now has has gone from K8 to being that to include high school with some different components of that as you know we've started a high school reading Intervention Program for our freshman students this year which we've put in place staff and data to collect on how we're doing in that area you already know that we do lots of classroom walkthroughs but each year we highlight different pieces that we have provided professional development on with the staff that we are then walking to see how well we are inspecting what we expect with those pieces then we have our own data that we use at fall winter and spring to look at how are we decreasing the opportunity Gap and how are we in doing increasing our reading achievement and then one of the big pieces of work that we're just really getting into is looking at our different reading interventions to have some Integrity checklists of how those are being implemented at each school and then how we keep data to know how effective those different reading interventions are this is our K-8 literacy framework and the areas that we're really working on are circled where we have independent reading time where students have choice that is one of the purposeful things we are doing to raise boy achievement so that there is some choice in what that looks like and also part of that is that diversity statement there at the bottom we've spent quite a bit of money to bring more diversity into Tech selections that are available for students so that when they do have independent reading they have things from their own interests or from authors that really they can see themselves in another big push is the small group instruction where we differentiate that and that arrow is pointing to those two statements at the bottom that I was reading all right math very similar data that I've prepared for us again looking at that pre-covered we were at 39 we're now at 31 the state and every other district is seeing that piece where there's not as high as student achievement yet this is the math iar by grade level and what I'm encouraged by this is you see our third grade is highest and then we see lowers if we can keep that third grade level and move them to the next grade level we are going to continue to see Improvement there the next piece is the percentage of students proficient on the Illinois assessment of Readiness by all those different demographic groups that I already explained in Reading this is the math growth and then here are some highlights again SD 308 like districts around the state were not where we were pre-covered yet we are above the state average in all demographic groups except for Asian we do have opportunity gaps with girls scoring lower lower than boys and Black and Hispanic students growing lower than white students as I said grade three is the highest and then our growth rates are higher than the state in every demographic group except for Asians so our math scores overall um we we shine a little brighter in math than we do in Reading at the moment this is the high school the math sat data similar types of things are low-income and Asian groups have a lower percentage proficiency than in the state but all other demographic groups are higher than state when you compare us to most of the districts with the exception of 204 and the demographic groups of all non-low-income boys girls and white students we score better and then this is the slide on our English Learners and our children with disabilities and students with an IEP and then getting to the most important part is what are we doing to improve upon this and one of the biggest things that we can do to raise scores especially for our low-income students but as you know we have low-income students that are also girls boys white black Hispanic Asian is to work on math vocabulary instruction and the more we spend on the time on precise math vocabulary instruction the more our scores will raise and it will really make a big difference when we get to Junior High and high school math instruction scores so that is something that we've been working on and then you knew we had a K8 math framework the high school team has now adopted that we are now K-12 with those pieces and the math department chairs are working uh with Dan arts and I on How to Train our high school staff around some of those good practices we also have the high school math Intervention Program for our freshman students with brand new Junior High resource this year and as you may or may not know when you adopt a new resource you do usually see a little bit of a dip as teachers are getting used to using all of that but we certainly are hearing about high levels of Engagement so we're encouraged on how that will work and help us with what we need to get done and then each of our schools do have a solid tier one math instruction program that they're working on with certain Improvement areas we monitor those we bring the principles together so that they can peer coach each other and share about what are some of the best practices with that uh and then just like I said for reading interventions we have to do that for Math and as a district we have a lot less math interventions uh and so especially at the elementary level we have some schools that are doing really well with that and we have other schools that need more resources in order to be able to do math interventions this is the math framework the Highlight now is it's not K8 it's K-12 as you can see and then our big push is collaborative structures with individual accountability for all and again that precise math vocabulary skipping over to Science assessment data this is just what it looks like from the district comparison to the state the state did not place a lot of emphasis on that this year in fact in the overall it was science participation but that will be changing so we need to keep track of how we are doing on this some other measures this is ninth grade on track from the district and the state comparisons the next piece is the graduation rate and I just chose the four year you can look at five year and six year graduation rates as well this is by the district and state and different demographic groups this next piece is new uh and yet old data so it's a new format that is now available on the Illinois report card around our Equity journey and the state puts it into student learning learning conditions and elevating Educators it is important to note that all the data that the state used to compile this is from 2019 so while the report is new the data is old and there are different pieces that go into each of those the student learning piece not only looks at State assessments at the upper grades but it also looks at how our students are doing when they enter our school at kindergarten and what Readiness they are and what are the different opportunities between all the different demographic groups learning conditions goes into suspension data those types of things and then elevating Educators goes into what different ratings we are having by the different subgroups and demographic groups of teachers and then just wanted to bring everybody back to that some of climate for learning can be measured by standardized tests and things that are on the Illinois report card but certainly not all of it and when you think about some of the forums that we've just had in the skills that our students need it's important to say yes student test scores are really important but there are other pieces and skills that we are developing for our teacher for our students and with our students that are not easily measured by this so then how have we supported this uh with all of the pieces that we need to do using covid relief funds we've hired 18 academic interventionists we hired five instructional coaches we've hired counselors social workers we've provided extended summer school and summer connections for elementary created a kindergarten step-up program and then I already mentioned the reading materials that we've purchased and then people especially administrators are listening at home will laugh I always talk about how do we inspect what we expect we will have done 2 000 classroom walkthroughs when we're done in March we're just have completed 960 of them and we go in to see how well we're doing it supporting teachers and getting where they need to be so that we can support our students we do have the principals report out what percentage of staff are doing some of our expectations so when the principals are doing their own walkthroughs then we can have a check pace and see if that kind of matches what we're seeing as well and I already talked about school Improvement plans and our student achievement data and then we do look at student and staff and Community surveys again this is just what the Forum came up with on all those different skills and then while I started with a celebration I also want to end with a caution right now we have everybody at commendable and exemplary and these are all the statistics that went into each of those designations and next year it changes not only will the growth rates that we see up there we will have more students be part of that that could help that also might hurt some of that but we also have got points this year for science participation and what percentage of students took the test we anticipate that that's going to change to actually how well did you do on that and then just like No Child Left Behind where the percentage of students that needed to be making adequate progress ratcheted it up each year that is part of this as well so each year you will have to get increasingly better to remain as a commendable and exemplary so even if we did exactly the same as we did this year that would not put us in place to necessarily be at commendable or exemplary now all right question I have one question um thank you for that that was awesome I always love to look at this data um and so you briefly spoke about the opportunity gap for low-income students uh but what have we identified and what are we doing in regards to the opportunity gaps and even I I didn't realize it till I just looked at the graduation rate for a Black and Hispanic students who have historically been low in the district especially for ELA and math so part of and I don't know which want me to identify First our reading and our math scores um when we work on providing Choice when we look at providing text from various uh backgrounds and information to make sure that we find something for everyone that will help with the literacy piece also a lot of the training that we're doing on bias and microaggressions and how staff is in doing at providing an inclusive safe learning environment with our climate for learning while that's not a directed at reading practice certainly in our district we're talking about climate for learning because if you don't have that overall piece to make sure that you see other staff members that look like you that can react with you that's a part of that that's also how when we talk about being responsive instruction it's how do you respond to all the students in your class not the Agri Target not the majority but how are you looking at different learning styles and different needs and that helps all of those students when we look at our low income pieces low income can if we do well with that will impact the overall white scores black scores Hispanic scores definitely low income we have some of our demographic racial groups that have a higher percentage of low income than others and that does play into those pieces the things that really need to boost up with low income when we talk about what we've done across the district to increase the amount of independent reading time that's one of the big differences not always but generally that our families from low income don't have a lot of books at home or aren't you know setting aside as much time for that so that's one of the research-based practices that we're doing to increase that for our low-income students and then I already talked about the math vocabulary with the graduation rate all of that feeds into that whether you're feeling you know do you have a trusted adult are there people coming alongside you is instruction being differentiated to be of interest to you and needs all of that feeds into that graduation rate okay um quick follow-up one sure I'm interested I I appreciate your research and even your focus on the boy versus girl um research that you're doing tell me a little bit more about what caused you to focus on that specific demographic so one of the things When I Was preparing for an interview to come to this district is I looked at past Trends and that's something that's always interested in me in my last two districts of being assistant superintendent because I think it goes on checked and I believe it's one of the best ways to help us all know our impact on beating the needs and being responsive to students there is no brain research out there that says that boys brains are better than at math or girl it's how we teach or how it has been brought about so when I see a big gap there and there is a larger Gap in this District than back then than there should be and we started way back then and then kovid came and there wasn't as much data to look at that but one of the things that happens with reading is in general and I'm speaking gross generalities not every girl not every boy we aren't even all binary but there are different types of styles of what learning styles you can address with that and in Reading we tend to have a conversation and we talk about the emotions with reading and we don't have specific goals or learning targets if we start having specific goals and learning targets our our boys will start doing better in literacy we also have to have informational text it can all be fiction then in math if we are not having time for collaborative structures and discourse and having some creativity our girls typically don't do as well so there are proven practices put into place but we've had Trend data now not only with our state assessment data but fast bridge and we're seeing those pieces but some of our schools don't have a difference between the gender you know there's no gender opportunity Gap you can have the same grade levels the second grade is whole there's a huge opportunity Gap third grade doesn't have it at all what's so fascinating is if I don't look at my data and I go and do classroom walkthroughs I start going I'm not seeing this you know I'm seeing what I think would be a an issue because it's more geared and then I look at the achievement data and it's that way now we have had some grade level teams that have already made progress in this so I'm hoping that we will get there and have that opportunity Gap shrink I know we'll get there it's just how much time it will take when you got me started Eugene I could spend hours talking about this I know and isn't it don't be sorry that's a big deal for students of color same conversations that you're having the same conversations and I have found that you first have to get people to know that they teach to their learning style usually or how they were taught and if we can show the differences between gender because every you know I have a husband I have a son I have those pieces then we know our impact and how our learning styles affect how we teach and then you have that responsive instruction to then open that up to different demographics in addition to gender but to look at Rays to look at low income and realize that one instructional style does not meet all of the students in your room so this instructional style that you speak of on slides 18 and 21 you talk about third grade and the importance of doing well here um are there demographics that are not doing well if when you disaggregate that data they and if so what are we doing about it because you know a lot oftentimes they say that you know the third grade is like a really important and you start to see the drop off in their learning like in from the third grade to the fourth grade and and do you do you see that as the same issues that you're talking about regarding gender um and and race yes all of those pieces um I I sometimes argue uh that we really really need to look at data is foundational even before third grade and looking at those pieces because if you start looking at third grade you've lost so much of the time and those fundamental key skills that really can be measured by some achievement tests and those things are early literacy early numeracy and by the time that you're a 10th 11th grade or later than that that's why we spend a lot of time with our Elementary staff looking at sight words letter sounds counting all of those pieces that do not aren't measured from the state because we don't start that assessment until third grade but it really has to have all of that all of those pieces and looking at responsive instruction the more we can get to that by second semester of kindergarten and on is really where it needs to focus so we understand that and we're doing that yes I it's not an overnight process but yes on that one sure so I was glad to hear you say historical data but I'd rather see that than the other District scores you know what I mean like I would rather see our scores over the years instead of what's some other District doing okay but as you know Trend data is hard the last few years right right right but we have data from we have historical data on a lot of these kids and then I was looking at your in Reading interventions and then third and fourth grade is really where they start taking all those sight words and putting them all together and that's where you find all these reading problems but I also again I didn't see any erlen screenings on there I noticed that you guys had freshman High School interventions for reading and again it's a missed opportunity if we have people trained for erlen screenings and we're not using it it's a huge missed opportunity and I don't think it belongs just in the grade school I think it belongs all across all of these levels with the notable exception of if we're pulling kids out for high school reading interventions they should be being tested in there too because they can't read it if they can't see it I know and I know and I you you keep bringing this up I do over and over and so maybe we need to like we just need to have a conversation about it at some point like right let's just because we we don't really know what you know and so I think in order for us to understand what you're so passionate about we maybe need to just bring it here so that we can understand it because you know I mean I've I've read things about it but um you know if you're if you think it's you know you're that passionate about it as the board we maybe need to understand it too because it's not a directive that the board is giving to say we should be using erlin right right but we did train a bunch of kids with some kids yeah we trained a bunch of teachers with us or funds to be able to do this we had a presentation at one point so we could call Pam Krasinski who's the leading erlin screener and I wanted to come in well I really want to hear from like our reading specialist through you know through faith I want to hear like what are we doing with it why are we doing it we're not doing anything with it right now well whatever we we're doing maybe we should all know about it so if I can jump in here we did have a presentation about it at one point that that was going to be ongoing as part of I believe Denise's presentation a few months ago but one of the things also Ellie to your point about the historical data in our thing I had thought about that also but one of the things that I also remembered was that we've had a few different tests standardized tests to go on so we don't really have historical data from this test we we had what was the one before this I know no something else in any event the name doesn't isn't matter it doesn't matter what it means is that we haven't actually had a fair shake to look at our own historical data with a consistent testing program and to be perfectly Frank some of these testing things don't actually speak to students real abilities so I kind of take some of this with a grain of salt although it's important and we got to know and you got to measure something somehow um but I would I would like us just to keep in mind as we're looking at our historical data that we can't necessarily that's just not maybe not an option because it's all different tests well and the student what was proficiency as I saw you know as I showed this full State average has gone down sort of look at Trend data you are we we did take a hit during covid yeah um Statewide so what I used to love looking at Trend data and looking at all of those pieces too but when you realize that instruction was diminished looking at that Trend data isn't as valuable as it is during a regular time with the same test didn't you also say that there was a huge drop in the number of students participating so if you did right so I don't I don't really know what we're going to really be able to compare to if we're not really comparing Apples to Apples at that point correct but are we well I don't know if I'd consider waste so much I mean this is important information to know I'm particularly interested in looking at our graduation rates particularly interested in looking at some of the data for our demographic groups and and there is something to be said for comparing against where the state average is compared to where our funding is for for some of these other areas too so and please don't think that what I'm saying is that this isn't valuable it is but it's not the only thing as I think Faith had mentioned I was just going to ask um we see any uh any information pulled from Fast Bridge um relevant or more relevant Trends you know within the district and we still have the opportunity gap between a gender but also between our racial demographic groups low income to not we see those similar pieces but we also then have early at the beginning of second grade that we can track and look at that and we are seeing that this year's scores are coming in much higher than last year's scores which would be we would predict because some students hadn't been in person instruction for quite some time but we saw a lot of gain and we saw even gain from Spring of last year to fall of this year where some of that recouped even during the summer which we wouldn't see in a regular time so uh we are optimistic as we look at fast Bridge that's measured three times a year and not as lagging that we're starting to see bigger jumps than what we usually and we need to because it was lower last year than it had been pre-covered but we're seeing those types of pieces and we are seeing some schools that have really focused in on the gender opportunity Gap that have made a lot of progress great yeah I mean yeah especially if we can I could take learnings yeah and uh you know show proof in the pudding you know so uh one other statement is uh you mentioned uh when thinking about the criteria of this data or actually now I got two thoughts so thinking about the criteria of this data you said that there was this as Dominic was saying there's a subset of students that are not included so do we know the demographic of that of the students that were not and then are we doing something now to get ahead of the assessment when they are included because otherwise it could significantly right and I think you're referring to the students you know so everyone was here for the assessments for last year but the year before that some of our schools were as low as 50 55 of students in person and only those students took the test so that only those students would be able to have growth data to do those pieces and certainly I'm speaking in Broad generalities but our schools that have the highest percentage of low income had the lowest of in-person attendance and Nationwide sd30 being the same our low-income students are the students that we struggle the most to meet their needs and to bring them along so as they were the largest part of our students that were not here for in-person instruction I am very concerned about what that means when they rejoin all of those growth rates so all of the things that we would be doing to improve math instructions such as vocabulary instruction and reading really working on the independent reading piece we need to do but as I'm meeting with schools such as the school Improvement team at one of our elementary schools that is looking at their second grade data this year and our second grade scores especially from schools that have a high percentage of low income we're really worried about they were not here for phonics instruction yeah they were not here for those early literacy pieces so we are actually reallocating some of the interventions in the time and have made some difficult decisions such as we need to back off of social studies instruction during second grade for this chunk of students so that we can get more early literacy skills in because I can catch them up on social studies information later much easier than I can catch them up on learning to read yeah so we have reallocated as we look at students that we're really concerned about and we have a high percentage in second grade at some of our schools so I and I appreciate and understand that the tool that we're using as far as tests and even the historical um measurement associated with it is not the primary and the only way that we can determine if a student is going to be successful or their aptitude however what is consistent with all of the measurements and on every slide that we're looking at is that low-income black Hispanic students have always are are are consistently um at or below not even at below the you know every other student demographic and so I just want to make sure that we're um and I know you are and you're expressing it that we're continuing to figure out not just what are we doing because if we don't identify why it is then we may not be doing the right things and so that's the reason why I want to make sure that we're identifying why and continuing to make efforts to help right right yeah I actually talked to Dr baller Dr Waller today and we're hoping you know to to dig in and continue the work that's been done and trying to get actions um because it's not a small achievement kit you know say one more time it's not a small achievement guess so I mean it's if if we could if we could pull um if we can get everybody you know up and and get that achievement Gap lowered I mean this District I mean it would just look just awesome on paper you know um and and the kids and in reality is what I'm saying you know so um it would benefit everybody absolutely and so yeah let's make those efforts um just a couple things uh just a couple things um you know you had touched about difference and so you know one of the things that might not show up on a test but one of the concerns I have is some of our reviewing some of our systems and setting our students up for Success instead of failure and I'll talk about it again Junior High very concerned I noticed none of our secondary our exemplary they're all commendable um and if if I gotta be honest with you as someone who was a junior high uh boy um sitting in lunch for 42 minutes and not sitting with my friends and in this day and age telling me I can't have a phone 42 minutes and I'm not being active uh and as you rightfully point out I'm gonna have to have a set of goals on top of that uh and there probably aren't really a set of goals during lunch other than go eat probably in 42 minutes pretty sure I can get that done in less than 42 minutes I'm gonna I'm gonna tell you I've I've seen some Junior High boys put away some food and a lot less time than 42 minutes maybe 42 seconds um that that's a concern and that's just one example where I fear that some of the things that we've set some of our students up in but that can impact their entire day and can impact their entire instruction um but that's one piece the other thing I noticed the teacher salary piece I'm curious how much of that might be longevity do our teachers stay here is one question another question is does that factor in them subbing um because I'm I'm well aware of how that works in this district and a third follow-up question and you can answer all three and then I'll leave you alone um is does that also include them having to sub for our teacher assistants and is that happening happening with a tremendous amount of frequency because we are short on that as well because you can correct me if I'm wrong but I believe when they're subbing for our teacher assistance they're making their what they would make not what our teacher assistants are making and I'll let you answer to all of those because I did notice that stuck out to me sure look at uh and it is it's been looked at for a few years uh that would probably require some contract negotiations and pieces of what that looks like I know our director uh Dr Shannon looters has come to me several times as well as the principles about how they would like to change that so we'll continue to look to see how to make that happen but I think they agree yeah just follow up so continuing to look at it so they're just admiring the problem or because well looking as so we're getting ready to do oea negotiations again so that would be part of doing all of that but without some of the changes there uh guy we have not been able to figure out how to make that happen Okay so a little bit of both then you asked me a lot of questions about the teacher salary piece longevity as you know as teachers move up the steps and those kind of things that definitely plays into that if we had a huge retirement and had lots of new teachers that would bring down the average salary piece that is salary that isn't additional hours of subbing or teaching assistant pieces that are that play into that okay so and I was gonna say Jared obviously educational attainment by the teacher so there's a as you know as an educator there's a big difference between a teacher with a bachelor's degree or a teacher with a master's plus 47 so you know the educational attainment plus years of experience greatly influence the average salary that's listed for School District 308 so it's safe to say that our staff is experienced and has high level of Education yes we have I think it's 70 70 something percent of our teachers have Master masters degrees or Beyond to to that point though I you know I still I'm gonna ask this question because you know the stress level of our staff can still kind of affect you know education delivery and I am curious and and a little concerned how much um how much our teachers are having to sub in these cases do we know to what degree this is this is happening how much our teachers are internally setting yeah that'd be something we need to have HR HR look at to actually provide you any data on but that's also every District I sub twice today yeah I wouldn't say it's every District I didn't a lot yeah you wore yourself I don't think she answered the question about the Tas which what was the question about so so I'm yeah I mean I mean so I mean I understand the part about solving for other teachers and yeah I mean to your point Ali there is you know there's RSV and flu and and and and covid colliding at once so I do understand their their illnesses that we're all having to deal with right I get that point but are we in a situation where we have teachers who are subbing for TAS because we're short yes okay because I mean that it's one thing if I've got a color you know Ally's going to come down and cover my class because you know you know our whole Wing is out because we all have caught something right I mean that that's going to happen in waves but if it's because we can't we can't staff properly that is a continuous strain and and I get that last year is last year nobody wants to repeat last year but I do think some of these things have effect you know that was part of a conversation we were having at the open Forum with a couple of uh parents in regards to the TA positions and uh what you're you know if I I would love to be able to have the information in front of you but at that meeting I you know I texted a couple of my peers of the largest school districts in our area to ask them the numbers of ta positions what their starting salaries are so most of these school districts have the same issues that we're having in regards to Tas it's you know and when you compare salaries even even school districts that have higher salaries are still having the issue of filling the teacher assistant positions because it's I think it's a uh it's a it's a person it's a Manpower issue in regards to the number of people that are out there looking for these types of positions so that leads into what like Faith mentioned yes sometimes teachers do have to you know so sometimes we do are looking at Contracting teacher assistant positions because uh we're doing everything we can to fill the position so we have properly trained people working with our kids done that with one other question that I had it was on slide 30 [Music] um talked about hiring 18 academic interventionists we hired five instructional coaches counselors social workers um all of that was hired with Esser funds correct and Esser funds end this year so next year well so that's going to have an impact on negotiations as well I think if you're if our plan is to keep those positions without extra s or funds those funds have to come from somewhere which would be our budget we've allocated a certain amount of dollars to those uh but some of those positions would go away after next year cool um on slide 30 where you talked about the equity data Journey yeah is that data going to get caught up so I assume that as the state is collecting those those pieces of information that they will next year use more current data correct and that's data that the state pulls from every District that's not like we didn't choose to only give them 2018-19 data are there any other questions from Ms Douglas that was a lot of good information thank you so much for that presentation thank you thank you thank you thank you all right item 7.1 uh good evening board so I have a few things I want to share this evening but uh first off I'd like to just say a couple congratulations to a couple of our athletic teams because uh District 308 did uh set some history this this fall so we just finished our fall winners our fall Sports season and now we're moving on to our winter sports season but before we do I'd like to congratulate the OE and Ohs boys and girls cross country teams uh this year for the first time in District history both of the uh both of the boys and girls teams from both high schools qualified for the State final and uh I had the opportunity to go watch him run and it was really nice to see that many 308 kids in the in the finals um the OE girl OE girls finished 18th and the OHS girls finished 21st Audra satterwind I had a 19th uh voice as an individual which makes for All State and the OE oehs boys finished 15th and Parker Knowles finished eighth as an individual with OHS boys finishing 25th so very good year for both of them also our OE girls volleyball team had a record-setting seasoning as they set the school record for the most wins and won the program's first ever Regional Title and girls swim and dive Co-op Katie mom was the sectional champ and uh diving in advance to State the team finished fourth at the sectionals with uh the following swimmers who advanced this day Chloe Diner Katie grecik Caitlin Stoddard Maddie Liska and Juliana pignato so just a quick quick piece about the follow Athletics because we had a lot of good success this reminder this Wednesday we have our second Community advisory committee meeting here in Oswego East from 6 to 7 30.

so I have an idea of what they need to know than how to move on um what we ended up talking about was just the beginning of what to expect in kindergarten the end of year expectations that kindergartners do not have a long attention span if you're working with them at home it's their age plus two so likely six to seven minutes use it wisely so in kindergarten we move a lot and I talked to that about parents that when you're working with letters and sounds play games but use that attention span wisely give them a break and then let them come back a couple things I talked about with parents that I brought with me um is grasping the pencil and how important that is when forming letters and their posture having a quiet spot to um to work with less distractions and then I also talked about googly eyes tracking those words when they're reading or when they're reading to their child hi thanks for having us um so for me Eagle info night was really important to have the students in the classroom showing their parents a little glimpse into our day we showed them things like how to log on to it's learning some of the things that we would do there we also did hegarty with our parents I hadn't initially planned on doing that but then I had some of my students say you forgot to show you know their parents this so we did hegarty with them we talked a little bit about some things that we do in class like math talks fluency games and I was hoping that parents could then take that information home and use it with their kids at home hi I'm Emily Harris thank you for having us I teach third and fourth graders so I have both in my classroom my favorite part of our Eagle information night was teaching the parents about number talks which if you don't know it's a way to teach kids mental math strategies and verbal reasoning they support their answers and we actually did a lesson with the parents where the parents were able to participate in that and it was really fun seeing the kids get excited to see their families answer questions and when I would call on their parents and they would have to come up and write things on the board it was just exciting to see the kids kind of take ownership of that and teaching their parents something and I am Courtney Foreman I teach sixth grade we in addition to all of the information that was shared we didn't do as many primary things but um we talked about a lot of things that can be done at home we sent home lots of information about how to question your child when they stumble which is something that we do every day instead of just giving them an answer or giving up we also focused on IXL which is a program that we use at bcsc and um we taught parents how to get on to IXL and showed them the appropriate skill plans to follow we also had some connection activities or problem solving activities I'm sorry um so in addition to one of our goals being family engagement we also have a goal for highly effective staff and one of the strategies that we have been using to meet that goal is number talks so we're using number talks K through six and so we've had the opportunity to share those with families so we've shared our learning with families and we have also shared what we're doing with kids every day hi um I'm Lindsey heck this is my husband Steve heck and um we're invested in a five-year-old that goes to Mount Healthy this year um as a parent um you know you take your kid to school and you drop them off and you don't you don't know what to expect um we really appreciated having the opportunity to go and actually see the class specific like they said the the open house was was great but it was very general so some of the takeaways and we've not seen this presentation but they nailed it um they made us feel more comfortable with him being in class in school it gave us a familiarity to the the parents and and the layout of the classroom and just the general um idea of what he was going to be doing every day um also it gave us insight and more understanding into the expectations for us and for him for his kindergarten year it allowed us to see how much the teachers put in to these kids I'm a nurse practitioner I have no background in education whatsoever and I think what they do is phenomenal the decorations the assignments the preparation they made for the class Mrs Anderson on the end there is Kobe's teacher and she gave us a laminated thing to put on the refrigerator of all of his passwords and sign-ons which is just above and beyond um then last understanding as to what parents and Guardians and families can do to help so that engaged my husband and I to be active in the PTO be more active in the school activities so their goal of getting families more engaged 100 for Mount Healthy and to be fair when I called and was seeking parent feedback from parents and I had the conversation with Lindsay um we asked for constructive feedback as well and the constructive feedback was primarily do it earlier the sooner the better I think we started September 6 somewhere around there was I was Kindergarten so fairly early but we do understand that as a first-time parents the more information the student can have it makes you feel better so so that's something we'll take into consideration next year this video is just a one minute video showing you um number talks as demonstrated by Kim Smith and um Liz Sanchez so show me how you would show me if you have an answer yes show me that you're thinking show me that you agree with something that said into yeah and show me that you have another strategy or another answer okay what'd you get seven how did you solve um okay so not six seven is the best all right is everybody here to say I know that four plus four equals eight and uh I only have a few of you in here but what do you guys think like I think one of the things the math things that you notice I see that there's um three ones one two one three so there's three blocks that have a number one there's only three if anybody notice anything different okay those are really important not very good here there we go um so we also held a fifth and sixth grade math night and student-led conferences together um this past week I think um and our goal was to demonstrate engaging and connection-based activities that can be done at home and we also wanted to make sure that they were inexpensive ways to practice at home and then our student-led conferences we wanted to provide time for our celebration and really let the kids decide what they wanted to celebrate uh we had one room that played board games common board games that could be found at home uh we played working memory games in my classroom and even though it didn't look as flashy they were excited once they got there um we played guess the number in another room and that has become a quick favorite that deals with place value and lots of math vocab and then we also played card games and dice games which would be easy to play at home and then we jumped into student-led conferences we had a really great turnout and lots of positive feedback we plan to host a reading night in the spring and not to be left out our related arts teachers are also working hard to engage parents so last Friday we were able to have our first Veterans Day in person program in three years which was really exciting to see our gym filled with lots of guests and you know lots of veterans and active service members and part of that is everybody every grade level was assigned a song to sing or an activity so everybody was involved one of my rules in my classroom is the basic improv rule of yes and so uh they don't say no a lot so they are everybody was a part of it and that was able to bring a lot of people something that I'm working on right now with a group of students I will have about 40 students with cast and crew we're doing a Christmas Story the Musical and it will be a month from now Lord help me and um we'll get there uh but um we uh something that we um you know something I believe in is live performances I bring in lots of people it's a lot allows kids that normally don't have the things they don't have the sports they have lots of other out this is an outlet for them and something else that we're doing is a couple of our staff members are going to be the adults um I'm playing the dad and another Allison Hill fifth grade teachers playing the mom and uh Susan suits is playing the teacher and then we have cameos from other teachers and staff members in our building so I thought that would be a fun way to let the parents the students get to see us in a different light also Kathy Henderson our stem teacher will be offering a stem family night second semester um and um more information about that will come along as she you know asked him kind of builds their program and um I'm very excited to be able to have live in person audiences and letting kids be able to be an audience and know what that's like hi I'm Ashley sheff and I'm the art teacher and this year on the same night as the performance of A Christmas Story we're also going to have an art show so I'm really looking forward to Bringing whole families in and allowing students to show off all of the hard work that they've been going to this year so far in art and I think one of the best things about an art show is just seeing that pride and excitement that students have when they show their grandparents their parents and everyone what they've made and our PE teacher Jerome wood he will be hosting a Zumba night in the spring so that's something else that we're really looking forward to and last we are also working hard to revitalize PTO so as Lindsay said we've got a big strong group who's come back this year so that's exciting as well what questions do you have for us nice so I have a couple any questions I wonder if you could elaborate describe the student-led conferences how do they go do mine so we work on those during writing time and the week leading up to student-led conferences and they're taking a look at their report card data they're also taking a look at IXL which I mentioned earlier and nwea which is an assessment that we take three times a year and then they're also talking about goals that they have outside of academics so they can share with their families something that they would like to do or like to achieve and it doesn't always have to be related to academics those were super eye opening for me to look at before we approved them for um to be seen by families but and we made some changes in my classroom so that we can explore some of those passions as well nice so only sixth grade five and six okay awesome so just generally a percentage of your families that are involved in all these activities we for Eagle information night as I was keeping track um we ran a little over half um in total so really good turnout um and for the five six student-led conferences the cafeteria looked full great Criterion I did it standing I appreciated the conversation about number talks and I was curious is that a program we buy from a vendor or something that you created at Mount Healthy how do number talks come about um and they've been around for for years the concept our elementary conference this past summer brought in um Jennifer Bayer to speak about math and she talks about number talks quite a bit and so we invested in some resources and really it just came about organically honestly at the during summative conferences with teachers a lot of teachers on their own accord said that that was going to be a focus just based on our our data and knowing the needs of our students and so they were kind of taking that on on their own and when I realized so many were doing that as well combined with the Summer Conference it just seemed like this is where we need to go collectively as a group k6 and then as you track results in your continuous Improvement Council you'll be able to see what kind of an impact these number talks and some other efforts have had that's the plan yes yes hopefully awesome yes Miss Dale I just have a comment um mainly for our parents that uh You are not alone when it talks about you know when you mention about taking your kids to school um it is it is a different feeling but then as you go it gets exciting because it's like having two homes because your kids are safe and everything there and you become evolved into a part of that structure and my kids were in fourth grade and I Google my kids are in fourth well we're in fourth grade they graduated in 2019 but for the longest time um we were struggling in math and so it's interesting seeing this I really appreciate what they did what you guys are doing with having the parents come in and walking them through that because Jim Coleman Mr Coleman had Elizabeth and I was emailing him because I was in tears because I couldn't figure out how to do the math I had to do it that way my kids were very much when the teacher says this is the way you do it there's no other way and I could do old school but I wasn't allowed to so we had to do it that way he invited me in and I sat and they had math at the end of the day and I sat there and the kids loved it because Mrs Dwyer could not seem to get the man Mr nailing this is for you I told you about this math and numbers deal so um after we worked on it and worked on it I don't really think I got it I finally just gave up and the kids did not get homework that night so they told me since I didn't get it that day maybe tomorrow I should come back so it's one of those that I look at what we've done and how we were taught years ago and our kids have so much support now and everything that at some point I feel like it's hands off because as long as they have to teach us and that was always my thing with Mr Coleman I said you have to teach me because I can't teach at home and stuff and he figured out real quick that math was probably not my thing um so we just I don't know how we got through it but I appreciate your comments and um and I appreciate what you guys are doing at Mount Healthy because you know I know being at South Side and stuff the the schools do surround their arms around parents and the kids and it becomes it your second home you'll be spending more time there than you will be at home and it's a good place to be so thank you Miss Dale are there other questions um I just had maybe a comment I as a working parent who I don't have a lot of flexibility during the day to get away as much as I want to be involved and so I really appreciate all the activities that you do at different times to accommodate you know parents like me that maybe will struggle sometimes we still want to be there we still want to understand it's just sometimes so thanks for taking that into consideration and there's so many things you do I have to believe that has grown over time and so like what are your what are your growth prospects for for next year in terms of different ways of Engagement do you have anything in mind not yet the eagle information nights were hit so we foresee at this time continuing those um right now we are still just at most of our cic meetings still just kind of brainstorming what else or what else is there that we can do to bring parents in thanks I have a comment and a question first of all that's great that you're doing all these great activities with parent engagement and I'm just to the parents mister and Mrs heck right what I guess I want to ask you what um kind of was the Catalyst or the the what made you get involved I guess is what I'm going to ask like what was was there something that specific that you wanted to get involved or you said that you were earlier you said you just dropped you know somehow you just drop your kid off at school you don't know what's going on well yeah so so we're older parents um we didn't start having kids till we were in our 40s um so we're older but um which made it kind of weird you show up and some of the other parents could be my kids or our kids um so that was kind of different um but the first PTO meeting we were sitting down to have dinner and I mentioned to Steve I said you know the first PTO meetings tonight and he said oh yeah and I said yeah I said you know we can't complain if we're not involved and and not to be negative but you know I just I I feel like so many people complain about school they complain about the homework they complain about the teachers they complain about the buses and as a parent blessed to be a parent at my age um I just decided that I was going to be involved as involved as I could now I work 12-hour shifts so it makes it hard and then dad's home with three we've got two Littles that are two and then Kobe who's five and I just feel like you get one shot and that investment and your we feel like you get one shot and that investment in your kid includes the people who care about him and around him or her so if we're not involved we have nobody to blame but ourselves and then that also has a ripple effect with other parents because you kind of hey let's go hey let's go and that's kind of how the ptos worked because now we've got a lot of parents who are are involved in dads that are involved that we can make do all the heavy lifting and you know then moms can have fun so uh yeah all right thank you so much it was sorry I would like to know when the date and time is for the musical and the art show I won't come out see some rembrands or something it's December 16th um have you decided exactly when you're your musical is going on seven yeah we said seven and then the art show will be five or six it'll be probably at five we'll say we're nailing down the time seven o'clock as a union uh Union uh sag after remember it's exactly at seven it has to be at seven or the kids don't go on or I don't go on thank you for asking Mr Bryant thank you a lot I appreciate it very much [Applause] in case you have play practice it makes sense that you would go home all right next on our agenda are board Commendation so I'll turn to my colleagues I have a few oh good go for it they're General but I was I saw Dr Parsons this week they had a great Thanksgiving movie night we wanted to mention that and faudria created some letters and some pictures for the Veterans Day I know a lot of schools did this but these are the ones that I know Justin too so and then I saw this great article about Columbus East and the planetarium and um you know I just it takes me back kind of when we I went to Columbus East so I love the planetarium so I'm glad it's still there Commendation too I think it's Bob okay still kind of comes in there and volunteers so accommodation to him and I think that Lincoln is an espelable competition that right CSA Lincoln anybody knows okay sense okay so to say good luck to them I don't know what happened I'll just see here that's it go for it so obviously it's going to mention a spell Bowl but you go right ahead oh no go ahead no okay I was just going to give accommodations uh to Central Middle School because a student there arranged or partnered with some teachers set to give all the teachers and staff and that served in the military on Veterans Day gave them got them flowers and was able to recognize them and give them flowers and my daughter she was subbing that day and she came home and it really touched her and she thought it you know was a really cool thing for them to do because a lot of times we forget that our teachers and staff that work for us whether they drive a bus work in the cafeteria help keep things clean so we're healthy actually like Mr Phillips have served in the military and we certainly appreciate it because we would not have what we have today without them so thank you absolutely so just one and then it's all yours okay and that's a segue so I just wanted to share our Central Middle School spell Bowl we have two teams that competed at the regional levels they took first and second and they will be moving on they are two teams in the top ten and they will be moving on to the virtual State final competition on Wednesday all right so we've covered spelling and Central and now Mr Grimes yeah excuse me I feel like I've been kind of skimpy the last couple meetings on these so um I'm not going to do more than make up for it I'm going to leave several things out but I do have a pretty healthy list um so I was reminded just how of how much the sros do each day when looking through uh Sergeant quisenberry's first quarter report and so again thanks and commendations to the sros and work they do each day to keep our students safe um accommodations to those responsible for making producing The Parkside Elementary project overview and the transition videos very well done and informative this next one is perhaps a bit unconventional but I think it's very important I just wanted to Echo the sentiments um from a report from Mr Jensen our director of secondary education in commending both the Indiana Department of Education State Board of Education for expanding their efforts to consider more than just standardized test scores in regards to accountability metrics for high school performance it's certainly going to be a long process to collect accurate meaningful data in regards to how students are performing um after they graduate but again I just want to join with Mr Jensen in applauding their efforts and willingness to examine our graduates performance post high school as a part of school accountability moving forward um also and this one has gotten a little bit quite a bit of it well deserved attention from the Republic recently but Mr Steele English teacher and Ms Alexander social studies teacher at CSA new tech co-teach a course called American heritage and they collaborated on a project to interview veterans and put together the school's first ever Veterans Day program just this past Friday Mr Steele shared with me that he thinks that the program is the beginning of a new tradition at CSA new tech and he applauded the efforts of the Juniors as they were essentially put in charge of everything regarding the program and that they learned so much from interviewing veterans and seeing the pride and appreciation of all the veterans that attended so thanks again to Mr Steele and Miss Alexander and the Juniors at CSA new tech um and recently uh reached out to I recently reached out to all the principals and other program directors um asking them to share some good news and I got an overwhelming response and I promise I'll only share some of those tonight and save probably the other half for December's for December's meeting so I apologize to anybody listening any of those principals directors listening tonight if I if you're left out tonight I'll get to you sometime I promise um so I'll start with Mr Newell principal at East Mr Greg Lewis retired social studies department chair last year actually has just been named the Indiana academic Coach of the Year retired last year after many years as a department chair at East Central and was a long time academic coach and well-deserved honor for Mr Lewis congratulations to him from Mr bockmeyer at Southside Mr bockmeyer reports that it's great to have the elementary basketball league back in Action playing games at their home schools this winter he says the crowds have been really good the first few weeks and the elementary kids are all in joy uh really enjoying playing throughout bcsc a couple things from Jay Payne uh principal at Central this one's not school related but it's a it's a pretty remarkable achievement oh and Sullivan an eighth grader at Central I just recently won the grand national cross country championship for 250 CC four-wheelers in the age 13 to 15 categories so congrats to Owen and then in addition to what uh has already been said about the central spell Bowl um the the one team that had the highest score in the district competition that participated at Purdue this past weekend with the 29 highest scoring teams across the state they placed into that placing fourth overall so congrats again to Mrs Summers English teacher at Central coaches the the spell Bowl teams there um and then I will wrap up with this one this is lastly and I know this person was it was reluctant to share his good news as he certainly I think would prefer the spotlight on his staff and students but Dr Gene hack C4 director has been named the Indiana acte administrator of the year and the uh according to the iacte website the award recognizes significant contributions to Innovative unique and effective CTE programs and Dr hack let me know that the award was a total surprise and not surprising that he feels that others are more deserving than he but he was truly humbled by the recognition so you know I think bcsc has a lot to be um proud for in regards to the C4 forward program so congrats again to Dr hack and all the other staff and students of C4 for having such an impactful program for so many students here in bcsc thank you since Dr Roberts has that wonderful photo up there I'll uh send out commendations to the staff and especially the parents that have been involved with sound and spirit of Columbus which is the combined High School marching bands I've got a Mellophone player and one of the silly traditions that these bands have I guess it goes back to Mr Brown maybe before even Mr stulse but on senior night one of the seniors parents has to perform the entire marching band routine subbing for their students and I got to do that last Wednesday we have forgotten already yeah what the what the kids do is amazing and the parents and the staff that are there to support them I think the picture's probably up here because Saturday Thursday Friday Saturday bands of America had their annual competition up at Lucas Oil and our band represented itself very well among a hundred other bands from across the country so congratulations to everyone involved with sound and spirit of Columbus thank you thank you and you're good that would not be me all right we have had no one sign up for public comments so we'll move on to school board member reports Kali okay Miss day off dryer I just wanted to announce that on the 29th of November the education Hall of Fame committee will convene and we will start reviewing the nominations for this year's educator of the Year award awesome thank you Mr Grimes the school Foundation met last Tuesday just a few items to note German thanks to German American Bank for agreeing to find the third grade architecture tour for yet another year the major saver discount cards have been a major success for the school foundation and the nine participating schools so far this year several hundred more cards have been sold over last year's totals with the final numbers still to be tallied and then lastly I'll go ahead and promote this one because I think it happens before our next board meeting the school Foundation is going to sponsor a cookies with Santa event Saturday December 10th from 9 to 11 at the old Jeep dealership next to Kroger kids and families encouraged to show up free photos activities and obviously cookies for for kids and their families thank you are there others I'm looking all the way down this time Mr Brian I do want to report that the ccic met on Wednesday November 9th we talked about the professional development day that is coming up on Monday November 28th right so a nice long weekend for families our teachers will be hard at work on professional development day we also got an update on the facility construction and the the program for November 28th sounds very insightful and very meaningful so we I'm sure we will hear more reports about that effort it is time for our quarterly reports Mr Phillips good evening Dr shed members of the board what a great meeting so far it is I am going to ruin it by talking about finances for just about five minutes but since I have the microphone we're in the black so it's never that's bad not bad news not bad news at all but since I have the microphone just what a tremendous meeting so far great to see all these kids and hear that loud Applause in this great room see Mr Weinheimer back in the building and then it just got barely mentioned but I don't know many schools that have as many mental attitude Award winners the hsaa state championships then Columbus North High School it just seems like every year or two there's another student and proud parent back here Mrs keel's son was the the winner for the men's soccer this year so congratulations to all them and a reminder from some parents I know they left but we got the reminder why we all still come to work and we do this work every day from from those parents so what a uh what a great night so far and I will summarize very quickly because there are not um very many variances at all to point out to you from from budget or expected through the third quarter of 2022 um sometimes there's a delay don't worry helps if I turn it on there you go got it there we go so uh revenues are up exactly as expected through the third quarter of this year primarily due to an increase in state support and assessed value I'll also mention I apologize for anyone buying a house or a car right now but our interest earned is actually not a negligible amount through through the third quarter of this year which is which is nice on the expenditure side I will point out that we do remain just behind schedule and behind budget from a salaries and benefits perspective but again that's because that that second two I'm sorry the second three pay month is not until December this year and it's usually one of the first six months in one and the second six months so once that comes around we will be right where we would expect to be expenditures from all tax supported funds uh same thing on the operation side I'll just point out on the operation side for expenditures the average of 11 increase for all support staff went into place July 1 and so that large cash balance should start to draw down a little bit as we continue to uh to pay support staff significantly more with the increase in minimums and the the support staff study that we conducted operating referendum fund expenditures the same exactly as would be expected uh this one's the opposite an increase in the amount of salaries because of the increased number of teachers who qualified for the referendum increase or the next step in referendum increases from the 5 000 to the 10 000 to the fifteen thousand dollar mark so can I I noted that one so can I does that correlate in a positive way with our intent towards retention of our great teachers I would argue that in many cases yes um we still had a large number of new teachers this year it's one of those it's one of those efforts that it's hard to know what would happen had we not done it similar to some of the interventions we put in place for um you know for students if we weren't doing those things what would happen with test scores and other kinds of things attendance and other metrics metrics that we use for students but anecdotally I know that we have teachers that have stayed here or moved to come here from another District because of the referendum pay uh one slight anomaly there on the Safety and Security side we've had a slight delay in the delivery of this year's buses that will catch up on the safety security expenditures for this calendar year as soon as those buses buses are delivered and we pay the bill uh cash balances remain up across all funds with the exception of the Health Trust and again that is because every payroll is a few million dollars and we we have an extra payroll that we haven't hit we won't hit until December 30th and the health and dental trust is actually the opposite it's the one that goes up when we pay ourselves from a payroll so that will catch up eventually as well in the last slide these are cash balances without the tax anticipation warrants and so you can see that we are down just a yeah down just a a tad bit um no I apologize just again in the health and dental trust it was the last slide that we were down with tax anticipation warrants because we didn't borrow nearly as much this year we only borrowed the education fund and the operations fund didn't borrow against any of the debt funds or the operating referendum fund cash balances with once the tax anticipation warrants are paid back are up a little bit and should remain that way through the end of the year happy to answer any other questions you might have yes Mr Grimes I've got one question it's somewhat related to this and it might be more of a doctor complete question do you know about what percentage of teachers were new to the corporation this year I think our retention rate was around 89 90 for this year something like that so and the good news is when he was out talking about the referendum he captured it with saying we have teachers coming from other corporations for that and I would even think that Dr hack with C4 with teachers coming in to help the CTE courses the referendum has also helped us attract some great experienced teachers for our C4 program as well as others and would you all would you happen to know off the top of your head Dr palika ballpark number for how that compares to the year prior the retention rate it depends how it's figured each year that's why we're trying to get into a standard way of capturing the data each year so what we are the way we're figuring it is the number of teachers that taught on the first day of school compared to the number of teachers that taught the year before so we had I think around 91 92 percent a year prior we did not have as many retirements this year but we also had some people who are now their spouses could work remotely or so so some of them returned to like their home States and so we had some of that that was probably more out of the ordinary than typical thank you another question all right thank you good evening we're excited to be in front of you this is Kristen Beck director of Wellness next to me in her first year in this position in the first year for the position when we hired Kristen one of the first conversations I had with her is please help me find a comprehensive EAP program for our staff that they can utilize so a little bit about the employee assistant program we've had our current one I believe since 2006 it's pretty much hasn't changed since that time so we're looking at with our strategic plan with healthy safe and welcoming environments when we did our focus groups and we got a lot of information from staff as well as from our engagement surveys the thing that kept coming out is Teachers trying and employees trying to find work-life balance trying to help meet the needs of everyone and their families and home life as well as meet the demands of being in the classrooms or on buses or with our students each and every day and our strategic plan our Focus area healthy safe and welcoming environments ironic same one that male healthy chose to focus on this evening we wanted to make sure our staff have Equitable access to necessary resources and in our current EAP system it is typically about Counseling Services mental health and that is an issue and it is widely known and a lot of people need to have that available to them when needed but we want to look at more of a comprehensive impact of it's not only the mental health a lot of things cause the mental health issues at the point so can we be more proactive in helping people get different assistances I know she's going to talk more about it more but more of like Financial advice because that causes a lot of stress on life legal advice Wills health I want to not take all that from her but in charging that last spring I met with Heather down in our benefits specialist Kelly Thompson our director of Health Services anjanae Norman our employing Student Assistance coordinator and just said here are a few companies please check them out vet them for us listen to their presentations see what they have to offer but which company would have the most robust comprehensive accessible platform they came with strengths and weaknesses for all but hands down they were most excited about the Lifeworks proposal that we are bringing to you this evening and with our Lifeworks program in your packet there was a lot of information as far as the contract and the overwhelm the overall program with it but the one thing we are most excited about is something that Kristen continues to talk about is we have employees anywhere from the age of 18 years old into you know close to 80 years old and everybody uses different modalities to access resources some people want the phone calls some want to make the visit where they go in person but we're in a day and age where some people would prefer video chat in a day and age that some people would prefer texting so all of this is allowed with Lifeworks program is easily accessible to them um I don't want to go too far because I'm not about it but also if people do not want to reach out and actually meet with anybody for this there are self-guided programs so if I want to go on and look for an article about anxiety or how to loved and aged on you know when people are going through in medical emergencies if I want to get on a read articles that have been vetted by experts in the field rather than getting on Google and just Googling something and trusting The Source this is something that is allowed to us so it's very accessible very handy it's an app or an online version that our employees will be able to use with their you know single sign-on or if they do the app and all that but don't want to go too far because I know I'll get right into what she's talking about good evening thank you for allowing us to be here yes I'm very excited about the potential of the Lifeworks EAP here are some services that are included they have 24 assistants through a toll-free number individuals can also live chat or text via the mobile app 24 7 365 days a year they will do an assessment right then if that individual is in crisis they will connect them with the provider then not get off the phone to make sure that those needs are being addressed up to five in-person visits as Dr pleek mentioned these could also be done virtually if the individual prefers that or through a live chat but up to up to five in-person visits per presenting problem per year and that's for employees dependents or other household members they include a work Life Services component and this this includes information and referrals if necessary on Elder Care Child Care Financial Services legal services so it is very holistic as Dr pleek mentioned those kinds of things can create stress in one's life they also have 51 languages that are available through the platform they have an interactive website with access to articles self-assessments they even have some online legal tip templates that individuals can access they have self-guided modules through their self-care component and that feature they have self-guided digital components in areas such as communication anxiety depression divorce grief so it covers a wide range of topics that people might want to access on their own they also have an automated virtual Fitness Journeys that users access through their mobile device this includes a fitness assessment that can be done as well as digital Fitness training sessions that are available through the mobile app or through the website at any time for individuals there are over 460 counselors in Indiana there are several within our ZIP code and area neighboring counties zip codes we did ask about that we will receive quarterly reports it's all aggregate data we'll receive information on the utilization emerging issues and what has been most used through the work life services the cost is comparable to what we're paying now for our current EAP it's of with Lifeworks it would be 1.99 per employee per month and then the like I mentioned before those services are provided for all employees dependents household members if whether they're on bcse insurance or not any questions yes go ahead Mister I've got a couple questions how how much was the EAP program utilized under the old provider on the quarterly reports I looked at for the past year year and a half it was about two percent utilization so we would we are hoping having this um this approach and having multiple modalities as well as a more holistic approach we could increase that utilization I feel like the need is there so that's a goal when as a follow-up to that so I guess my question is moving forward how how do you plan to educate and inform employees about this new change and all these Services well we plan to take our show on the road and go to schools talk to everyone that we can I'd like to meet in person as much as possible they Lifeworks provides an implementation manager to help with the process and to help encourage a smooth transition so they do provide sample emails Flyers brochures so they they will help in that process as well thank you sure I was curious if there are other school corporations that have bought in yes there are Dr pleek spoke with a couple individuals I think at two or three at least all had positive information one school had just transitioned so it was relatively new but so far so good um someone one school corporation did comment that the implementation had been very smooth and that they do provide that guidance and assistance so that feedback was all positive I'm going to say this but then I don't remember so there were interesting add-ons you know and they they sound like really helpful so I was curious your assessment of them or you're just going to wait to see how the implementation goes and maybe add them don't ask me for an example because I forgot all five of them no that they sounded very cool yes they have a lot of options but you know I have had conversations with Mr Phillips so I know sort of our budget parameters do for right now but yes but quite a lot of the features are already embedded and we did work with them a bit to get the five person versus a four-person and and so we were happy to be able to have that change from four to five right yes they have a lot of wonderful features all right thank you yes um the vendor that does this for the hospital where I work you talk we talked a little bit about how to promote this and how to they had a one-to-many I think I think registration for the financial household budgeting class maybe it was 25 and I think they did it in a series of four meetings after the first 25 got through word of mouth about how productive it was I don't know if it's the same vendor or different vendor but it was Word of Mouth that really drove that program which then of course you know they log in through the website so they start to see some of the other tools and benefits that are available so once you have a couple of people that are willing to give testimonials I think that will go a long way toward making sure we get the 1.99 per member per month is that what it was yes yeah yeah I agree I think that is the the best way to spread the word is through personal testimonies and they did we did check with them as well they said on average when someone contacts them to set up uh counseling services typically that is all done within three to five days they can anyone else foreign thank you all very much I appreciate the information thank you thanks have a great night thank you thinking about future reports on the employee assistance program will that go to the Health Trust then and then come to us annual reports here as far as the reports or the information from the employee assistance program like like we do on the cafeteria services um just it's more less about metrics and regarding population health and those kinds of things could possibly integrate it into usually usually Mrs Thompson does an annual nursing report something like that or around maybe Wellness in gen to the board once a year great starting was a conversation at the Health Trust meetings a concern about the topic of mental health and service to our members but this is available to all of our staff and and their family members whereas the Health Trust is only those individuals participating in the insurance program that we offer to um we do have a district Wellness committee it's getting there right yes thank you yes I was Gary say the information will be shared at the wellness Council meetings as well to keep all informed and we can also do Friday notes um currently I think Janae shares a lot of Friday notes and things like that so we can our quarterly reports we can look at sharing Friday notes of the board that way as well thank you we're down to the how we are I have a number of items for requests for approval tonight starting with the minutes of our last school board meeting on October the 24th you have a list of supplemental contracts as well as field trips professional leads in in front of you tonight as a change just a change of dates for one of the trips so the accurate information is in front of you for field trips and we also have school fundraisers you got a list of those claims in payroll we have claims for November 14th dated today of about 1.6 million dollars pre-run covers the month of October so about 2.5 million dollars payroll just have one for you from the last meeting since the last meeting a little over three point one million dollars we also ask for approval of the employee assistance program that you just received information about you've had a contract in your packet also approval of the guaranteed maximum price for educational improvements another set of those from Dr Bozeman we have another recommendation from Dr Dr Boseman for an agreement to participate in the motor fuel budgeting program from the Indiana Bond Bank also approval to donate obsolete Chromebooks from our technology department to the transportation department and we have a resolution for the 2023 tax anticipation warrant as well as approval of the Health Trust broker slash consultant Services agreement and again that one is specific to the Health Trust and who they're using to help with decision making that is the list of items that I have up for your approval this evening all right thank you so I'll entertain a motion for approval of 3A through K as they are presented to us so move thank you Mr Bryant is there a second thank you Miss day hothwire are there questions about any of these items to ask the peoples whose name is in parentheses I've got one doctor yes Mr Phillips this is for you in reference to letter k for um self-funded plans like the one here is it typical to have the Health Trust broker consultant or we would do most self-funded plans have such a thing I guess it's what I'm asking it's every District that I know of on my colleagues I'll use a broker consultant to help them navigate decision making and bring things from the market to the trust to consider to implement programs that has been my experience too Mr Grimes even even consortiums that have maybe a number of Corporations tied to it will have a that broker other questions hearing none all those who approve items three a through K as they are presented to us if you'd signify by saying I I those opposed all right that's a pass for you Dr Roberts thank you Dr should Dr Peak I request approval the HR recommendations as presented this evening thank you I'll entertain a motion for yes entertain a motion for the presentation of the human resources recommendations that we have them so moved thank you very much Miss wielton is there a second second thank you Mr Grimes any questions for Dr pleek okie dokie then those who approve the human resource recommendations as presented if you'll signify by saying I I those opposed there you go thank you Dr pleek lastly the opportunity for us to share our thoughts input and review from this meeting Mr Bryant I just want to say congratulations to all the Columbus North athletes who came here tonight it was great to see them and imagined some of them going off to college next year because they looked like they were about six thank you to Amy strong and her Mount Healthy team for their presentation on parent engagement and I did owe Mr Bryant's congratulations to the athletic teams also senior projects are coming up kind of midterm Columbus North so I wish the best to all bless you um wish the best all those students who are presenting and I get to to ring on one other Bryant we're getting old that's what that is Sir I appreciated having the parents come tonight that's really a nice touch and way and way to kind of bring that home for me so I thought Mount Healthy did a great job tonight I appreciated hearing from Mr misick awesome thank you Mr Grimes um yeah thanks to Mr Clark I believe he's still in the back there and all the others involved in putting together the meeting for here tonight at North it's nice to have a little change of scenery it's very good uh congratulations to again to the many North athletes recognizes this evening thank you to Dr bills for her thought provoking reflection on John Dewey is insightful contributions to education uh thanks to Mr strong and the healthy staff and parents and their presentation on their intentional efforts to include parents and families and then I would also say congrats to um three newly elected and one recently re-elected board members look forward to working with you at the beginning of next year and then I want to close with something I got from a principal this is from Mrs Detmer The Rock Creek principal she said she has a celebration from the end of October that she's been wanting to share for a long time and she says and I quote this this experience truly reminded me of the of the why behind the work I do each day and and she shared a story about a group of rock Creeks Rock Creek students who recently went to the Columbus Rock Gym and several of the students were interested in trying the most difficult climbing wall but we're nervous about it and Mrs Detmer reported that the cheering and encouragement that she heard from all the students made her principal heart happy and at the end of the day all who wanted to try the most challenging wall tried it and even if they weren't successful getting to the top the encouragement she heard from the students was great great job for trying and then lastly this is a quote from Mrs Detmer it was one of those moments where you smile look back and think how great watching kids grow and mature is so thanks to Mrs Detmer for that thank you yeah thank you Mr certainly Mr Grimes is always hard to follow and I think we need to uh change the accommodations to Todd's accommodations so I appreciate him for always sharing things that's going on within our district I too also would like to thank Mr Clark for hosting us at North and all the athletes and Dr hack for his uh award and it's just truly a good night to be back at my high school my kids high school um and um but anyway it's uh it was it's good to be here thank you yes sir Stenner yeah I'm sure everyone on the board we all appreciate everybody that was involved in putting the meeting together tonight thanks to you all right I just want to remind her and I appreciate this about this particular meeting that um I the coaches referred to all of our athletes as student athletes and the fact that so many of them are also Excel academically speaks to our commitment to the whole student and our approach to learning here in bcsc this meeting had just covered all the stuff that school boards do which I appreciated so honoring our student athletes the coaches learning the status of our finances it's wonderful that we retain a very proactive healthy approach here and then the work for our staff that we are equally committed to doing well for all of the staff that are part of bcsc so I appreciate the effort that we have a robust EAP program so this modeled what our work is and it's great where it's it's just so cool to do it for bcsc this is a great place our next meeting is December 12th oh just to add Dr it's hard to add anything to the summaries you all have provided but it does take a lot to put together a meeting that's not in our building and so to want to commend those individuals who are involved in doing that during the course of the day from Sherry to Nick to Brett John Green the custodians here others I'll miss somebody as I as I keep trying to give names but also to Dustin who came in and pinned for us to make sure that we could also continue our streaming work as we change locations that's one of the extra variables becomes a little bit more difficult so thanks Dustin for also putting together the streaming for this evening thank you awesome sure sure so calendars December 12th 6 30 we will be in the Terrace room of our administration building that is our next meeting so thank you all this meeting is adjourned foreign

um very few uh exceptions you know the overages at the high school um unexpected uh expenses of 250 000 in the overloads um is what we're projecting for this uh year as the as the overloads continue um three months into the school year we are seeing negative in positive numbers in different line items as you mentioned Al uh the reason for that is um we are in the transition as we mentioned a few months ago of uh transferring line items to line items to balance certain um account lines and that will continue uh we should have that all cleared up for the next report um and that's between General funding and Grant funds you know there's um individuals that were being paid in one uh bucket versus another bucket whether that's a general fund or one of the other grants so um we've had we have in the last two weeks this report is as of October 31st but as of the last two weeks we have moved um a great amount of individuals and millions of dollars from one budget to the next budget or one account line to the next line and that will show in the next um report in December or January when we meet again but like I mentioned before the last paragraph we're on track very similar to October 31st of 2021 we uh had spent about 20 percent of our budget we've spent 19 of our budget so right now we expended 26.25 million there's encumbers of 93 million and then the balance we're seeing of 21 million dollars it's not really a balance it's unencumber balances that will be projected throughout the year um so health insurance will encumber the rest of the health insurance for the year Dental um you know any transportation any other lines that that will continue to happen it usually happens right after you know we've opened schools we started already now we get into the nitty-gritty of each lion see which lines weren't budgeted uh the right way or come over when we did the budget back in December of 2021 so um the bottom line is you know we have 141 million we plan on spending 141 million um and we monitor those lines um so if you go through the detail sheets I'll bring these up a little this is your summary of your general fund and your Grant funds so if you're seeing the salary line is in a negative 1.6 million that's because there's a individuals that will be coming that have come out since you know October 31st of today November 15th out of the general fund into the grant fund and entered in their buckets for example if they're paid out of Esser or priority School we've moved those individuals it is a it is a tedious process and it takes time it can take up to five minutes to 10 minutes per individual making sure we grab their history from say July 1 to today and make sure all that comes over correctly so that's something you'll see that will go away the next report um very similar to the other lines as well Eddie Excuse me yes before you um again undesignated the term undesignated cuts to uh the physical year 2023 budget of a million and a half in a red that you're saying that's going to go away those are the cuts that we made um when our budget was cut from the 150 155 well 152 155 million um we had we had 11 million dollars we had it cut and those were we created a line in there so that it would balance out is this is that correct how um explaining it John right um and Elle's right too though that red figure will go up into the salary line it's it's made up of two components uh one was uh something that's different names we've called it salary savings we've called it breakage it's uh about 900 000 if I remember right uh a difference between um staff members who were leaving and what we expected the replacement staff to be hired at uh which were lower steps we we have this uh every year just from normal attrition so in June uh we didn't know who those people all would be or um although we know mo we knew most of people were leaving we hadn't done all the hiring yet so we didn't know exactly what lines uh that savings would come on so we parked it down there to make the budget balance and the other um part of that was uh I think it was five elementary sections that our enrollment forecasts at the time said uh we did not we probably didn't need to uh fill or have even then we didn't quite know whether they would be first grade or second grade or where they'd fall uh so as the summer progressed of course we found that out but until we when we knew when we put this budget together we didn't know so that's down on that line but now that we know all those things uh those cuts will go back up onto the lines where they uh the savings occurred and uh that would be in the salary the Top Line sorry you're sorry for the long explanation that's not a negative number that 1.499 670.

so it'll basically disturbing better up to that sidewalk okay there we go we're going to show you one more picture here that one yes that one please so this one kind of this will be a little better picture of what uh uh what we're just talking about here that and I think you have an idea of it that sometimes it's best to have that picture is there any talk about so Niagara Street South of the school is one way forever and I don't understand why it's going to talk about making that a two-way street and increasing control since they're kind of Taken ours it's uh it was brought up at our meeting and I mean may not have been happening yeah you were actually training I think you were you were at the conference we did discuss it briefly and and it's something that that could come up again yeah I was just instead of like the what we're going to lose in that diagonal parking so I have to walk all the way across the playground in New York if there's more parking on Niagara Street where there's sidewalks and grass between the road there that could easily legal parking too so I will tell you this and this I I learned a lot from this process originally I was told that the angle parking on the Sixth Street East of the Elementary playground I've told I was told that that was ours but it's not it's the cities I was told that the parking off of Niagara south of the Elementary playground was ours it's not it's the cities and honestly it's the people across the street that use it they use it for parking they use it more than probably well I shouldn't say more than we do but they use it just as much as we do so that those parking areas are not technically ours so the circled areas where that's gonna you're gonna basically that that grassy area between the Street Neosho Street and the the sidewalk they're tearing that out they're going to build 30 spots of proximately angle spots angle parking spots I think that they keep it in one way for safety issues I mean to keep them the flow traffic yeah flow of traffic is a little bit slower because it's by an elementary and for safety yeah there's a lot of drop off from pickup on Beyond in my industry so that one-way traffic at least you know you don't have to try to get across two lanes play frog or so to speak and try to get safely process well and I think we'll do that because it's a small Street I didn't know if there was improvements in the city could do to it maybe the larger street that would be careful too but yeah yeah right so it would be improved we're getting our access to the daycare effective at all diet it will not be because again drop off some pickups uh uh would be well I guess it could have been in the middle of a day possibly they may not have the access to the west side of the daycare they may have to park on the long stretch of parking there it's along the fence line right but they'll still be able to access and get into the daycare is that our parking yes that is our parking and another thing I was told too and I I didn't I was told that the county owned 7th Street in between the Courthouse and the elementary school I just found out recently from the city that that technically is ours yeah it should be it to me it should be the city and then Seventh Street between or excuse me Des Moines Des Moines Des Moines between the Courthouse and the daycare I was told that that was the counties it's not so anyway so we're learning a lot from this process uh information I will say this Tom Johnson and Aaron Smith have been terrific to work with Mark Davidson terrific to work with we all put our heads together tried to come up with the greatest situation this is this is as good as we can come up with right now so I don't know if you have any other questions or if you have other thoughts later on please share them because it's not set in stone Tom Isaac Tom and Eric Mark have been terrific to work with and we're willing to listen to anybody friends okay I don't have but I think that's it that's it for me except two quick things we will have um we will have a groundbreaking ceremony for the the turf project on November 29th I'll get you a specific time for that I want to try to do something uh you know for that that project uh on a positive note too I just inform you again things are happening Fast and Furious and busy as can be I shared with you in Friday notes that the board the rec center board is contributing three hundred thousand dollars towards our project which is incredible absolutely incredible I'll be 30 000 a year for ten years where they'll look to pay it off sooner and so Scott Jeffers and his board should be commended and thanked for for that they want to see the project just as much as we do they see a lot of benefit for this so again November 29th I'll share a specific time if you can make it there'll be a chance to do if I say a PR photo op for that with with the rec center people being involved as well they're bored and then I'm gonna throw this way out in advance November 10th through 12th next year that's the kasb conference November 10th through 12K SE conference I'll send that to you if you can make it it's a really good experience guys it really is and um yeah so I'll stop there huh we're moving that up a month yeah it used to be in December now they've moved it yes they've moved it to November it was almost 600 people so yeah finally it was terrific and we'll share maybe I don't know if James wants to show anything now but we'll share some information later in Friday notes as well okay that's all I've got thank you one thing I had to kind of a question called on the Kansas Star recognition for toast that they're Effectiveness that doesn't include our students that didn't go to the military right like correct so I thought they should be obviously committed for doing that but that is something that if someone chooses to go to the military they're not counted for this public segmentary yeah absolutely the state is working on a formula it's kind of that the military can come and get the names but then they won't share anything with it you know and share anything um so we bought that ever since this came out so when I was working with KSD and going around with them um same thing like we talked about the farmers and the kids who go back on the work online how do we how do we do that we have can do that so they're working on something so that in a report someone we would report that that it would reflect them as a successful student right right and that's kind of what I was going to say that that's a bronze yeah but we have so many more kids coming out of things that don't correct right and I can think of one local graduate just two years ago then that's running his own business that we're not necessarily account for a quote unquote post-secondary you know Effectiveness but they're they're yeah there's other things that need to be included in there in the military is one zone together good good thoughts any other questions comments versus nintendent Report with the parking and the uh move on to the another report card review oh yes building report card I'm not going to spend a lot of time on this just simply because um the the principals do this during the results monitoring report ing that so anyway having said that the information is there if you pull up that website you'll look and you'll see if you just dig in you can dive in a lot of different areas the building principles have done this and then and they're doing continuing to do this I'm always looking for assessments whether it's mappers and map results or state assessment results or act data or whatever graduation you know you know as far as graduation numbers and so on and so forth our state assessment again we don't again we don't live in the world where we're just focusing on state assessments and data assessments only as you know but you can look and see our data lines up very similarly to the states if you go on that website and you see some numbers that are again very similar as far as for math English language arts you can change that uh that uh that subject and a little drop down menu there to the right but but our data our our numbers line up uh let me say very similar to the states and they're constantly evaluating information in the building um you know with the students and a reminder that on a two on state assessment some people want to say that two is a failing number when you have a five point a five-point rubric it's a little bit easier abcdf sometimes people think that way with a four-point rubric some people want to say two and one are failing no that's not the case two is is is a very strong it's an understanding of the concepts three and four are strong understandings and you can set an understanding of the concepts and skills and things and as far as that subject area goes two is not a failing grade so to speak it's not it is not and what you're trying to do is you're trying to move ones to twos they're not going to probably go from one's divorce but you move ones to twos twos to threes threes to Fours keep the force as is that's what the goal is but again reminder we we are not solely focused and especially this the list goes on and on and on as far as a successful student so I don't know if you have any questions on the on the report card information we're lining up very similarly to the state and the building principles are constantly evaluating and looking at individual students in grade levels and there'll be more specific information coming out the results reported starting December is when our first I think our first results report is December okay any questions regarding the Builder report card review look forward to hear the portion of the upcoming months looks like move on to the Border ports that's great said I I went to the um maybe illegal every year to the state tour uh I I really highly recommend everybody trying to attend that as much as they can they have a lot of attendance and board members this year that they haven't had in the past uh but there's so much to learn I mean some of these reports Etc and how you read them and just whole assessments and just hearing other people what problems they're having and I gotta say I'm extremely proud to be immersed in here and see if there's still things we have and really though we have our issues I mean golly with staff and students it's it's actually it's a great place to be so uh I can't compliment the staff well enough or the administration it's it's really good so it's it's nice to hear do that when you go places I did have uh just one comment this is kind of a observation I noticed that the EPA did about a grant that paid for electric buses Nationwide the close district Southern Line County received I think 1.4 million dollars to buy Ford electric school buses I don't know what the plan is I just saw a newspaper that was interesting that Grant is available year after year however there are preferred school districts and we do not fall River School Districts Lane but as time moves forward and enables everything involves I thought I was kind of hoping we would be one of those preferred districts so we just look at something like an in-town bus plus that really wouldn't leave the city district or the city limits nacho Gaffigan's Corners where we said they're helping diesel fumes all day but it was just kind of an idea something I observed from one of the other locals yeah I think I think I'll be interested to see how Sutherland County is their succession so I didn't know if it came with the infrastructure for moving those like terms into medical schools or whatever I didn't know but I might reach out to them through the future see how that works actually yeah sure any other questions or comments before reports we move on to Capital outlay review okay this is yearly let me look at this uh and then we'll look at it a little bit later in the school year so I I shared with you some information that should look familiar from past years uh there's a few different items in there that we look at as far as the you know the different projects that we're working on again a reminder that we did you know again reduce from quietness back to four Mills on our Capital outlay because again that was something that we said we would do and get much appreciated from the community to support that you as well as a board to support that one mill for five years and we've got a lot out of that one bill for five years guys timing was excellent for us otherwise it could have been very very expensive for us if we didn't do it when we did that so you know those projects at elementary middle in high school um again I'm starting to expand from five to seven years now with the capital outlay Pro Plan just simply because there are a few things like the project for example the exterior exterior work that we looked at with a Restoration company they slotted out some work that could be done exterior wise in seven years so I'm going to throw that in so we're going to start not only five but year six and year seven as some projects come up I will say this the work that we've done to keep things you know taken care of here in the district especially with the exterior of our buildings uh the gentleman who came to just give me an oversight of how how and when we were you know what we're going to have to do you know what it's going to look like here in the next five to seven years was very very complimentary that our buildings look great we are going to have our most pressing need I will say this at the football stadium and that's in the capital outlay plan the football stadium is not in good shape as far as the the the the the the exterior caulking ceiling um oh gosh tough pointing and so on and so forth that's that's a project that's going to have to have to occur if not you're going to start to see some crumbling and deterioration out there that's not going to be good it's going to cost even more um you know to take care of it if you don't take care of the restoration piece then it becomes Construction and restoration that's going to be somewhere haven't gotten a final quote because the quote I got was last year for that somewhere that 83 000 range so if you look at the capital outlay documents down below I think there's five there's one from last year one currently and then three years out and we've got the the others again just extending out to even further into seven years as well and they're um like I say that they are again they're they're they're being being constructed as time goes on and we're adding to those documents so uh anyway so having said that that that's going to be something that I say that that's that's an important thing the exterior piece again we have some leaking in the water that's getting down to the underneath the football stadium and it's not it's kind of puddling up we're going to hopefully keep the water out from underneath the base the base of our stadium that way we won't have you know deterioration or Foundation issues down there so uh I again I'm sharing with you what those documents look like I've shared with you uh like I say information in the past about this again projects a number of projects are on them and and we may move them bump them we may not do them I mean there's I think there's one for baseball softball parking when we do that or if we ever do that it's at least on the plan so again the plan doesn't mean 100 we're doing it or 100 we're doing it that year so I don't know if you have any questions specifically about any of the information Berkeley or size we'll just say everybody's in because there's nowhere near we we um the school districts all over are eight Mills because they can I mean I shouldn't say all or there's a lot of school districts that are at eight Mills because they need it one of our league schools for example I can tell you so just again one meal for us will generate in the neighborhood of about 490 dollars give or take a few dollars our 57 590 thousand dollars one meal for us there's one school district in our league that eight Mills generates about five hundred thousand that's why they're doing that that's a bad district has that bond has had a bond issue recently of over 35 million dollars so again they're not only paying the local taxes but they're also paying that Bond 15 20 25 years however long they do that fine people here in this community have got to realize how lucky We Are we almost do like many Bond issues every year to keep our facilities up so that we don't have to do a major bond issue and tax the taxpayers even more so so that yeah we're we're the Envy of everybody matter of fact there was one of the sets of aesb we talked about budget and finance and they brought up Burlington it was like I don't say our name but are Mill lebbies one of the lowest if not the lowest it was the kasb last year when we started the kasb leadership for tomorrow um and we reduced our bill Levy again this year not just by the one meal that we dropped off but even more that's unheard of in a lot of places it's also a good thing because because we can go out go out and brag but we've got to promote what we have and what we've done with it so it's uh you know it's it's actually been good also so if there is law school are very interesting so again remembering too again with four Mills whether it brings in approximately again it varies from year to year so it's based on assessed valuation so four Mills brings in about 2.3 to 2.4 million dollars for us in Capital outlay alone when you start to look at the last couple of years on the capital outlay documents you'll notice they start to decrease amounts start to decrease 23 24 goes down again approximately what we've got spent there you know again things will change and things will move but that's going to be under that two point uh 2.3 to 2.4 million when you go to 24.25 you get an amount spent again there'll be some things that will be added on there and so on and so forth that that amount is going to be less than that 2 3 to 2.4 we start then saving some money back for we'll have the elementary school roof at some point in time they'll have to be done and we're monitoring that that's still currently under warranty now the elementary school is rough but at some point in time there's going to be a roof project there or if depending upon January we may not have a roof to deal with there and then that's that pulls off of our Capital outlay you know plan like some of the things again for the elementary he may pull off of the capital outlay plan depending upon the future so it's it's a moving constant adjusting document that we work on questions on a capital Ally document s anybody else anything are you still there yeah I'm here okay and if you again like Lucas mentioned if you hear some things in the community this is not just Craig Marshall doing this to Capital out by document this is we meet with the building principals to meet with margarito Brad and Amy Nelson uh food service maintenance as well as transportation and grass everybody's involved in this tomorrow we'll start to we'll actually look at the concrete bit that's what we're doing tomorrow to get prepared for a December concrete bid so just uh just kind of FY it's not just Craig Marshall if you guys have board members if you hear Community if we're not taking care of certain things imagine bringing them up to us because we have money to do things okay let's move on to the I've heard approvals of appointments the truck bed this would be Margaritas I'll try they'll work truck uh we had a unique situation where we had three people bid on this and we had a tie we had same amount I called kasb attorneys I called the ksde finance what do you do well they they both simply drawing the amount of a header you can flip a coin and go from there with flip to point so and again this is for our old service truck that's been in the district for we did have one compliance signing we also have to look at Kansas statutes there's a lot of Campus statues school districts are required to follow up one of those is any contract that is over 20 000 has to be bid out and one of the bids for the bus router that was for the ECF Grant um it was right over 20 000.

I've got three parts to my report and any questions at the end would certainly be the uh acceptable and advised and welcome if we look at our operating fund we look at the 18.1 million that we approved for the new Budget on the Homer meeting October 11th at home after that said and done there's still 4.43 of that uh 10 of 18 million 180 000 over 700 000 not really in Play It's just unencumbered and unspent so that's a good sign our Capital fund 17.29 percent again not encumbered or spent in our 620 fund if we can use that on uh we've got a couple of projects in mind we'll have to get back to you because they're both they're both pending or one of them is of course the Del Rio project Paving of the gravel parking lot and we wanted to have that done by this time a state contract behind it a bidding on that and they ran into again some complications with the develop to do with access and funding and just some of their expectations I guess so I believe our it would be correct to say that our contractor could have done a better job getting exact numbers and data from Planning and Development before they put the bid together but at this point I think we can still Salvage that and move forward and hopefully have that in before the end of the year they can work on again removing some of the area there where there's such a problem with water retention and then the entire gravel parking lot remove and replace with some Aggregate and then put a surface on as long as they stay within their amendments and you've seen cement covered with heavy tarps I think these guys have done it before to kind of negate the effects of freezing temperatures they think they can get it done still this year otherwise you wait till next spring this would be a con concrete sidewalks are on a whole concrete surface well the parking lot will be mainly asphalt but aggregate underneath it so there's no I don't understand that but you talk about concrete well then that's going to be the catchment basis okay from the front of the building and then there's slope and drainage issues and then there's utility line issues and then there's the distances you're coming on I believe it's is it uh ooh two West where you're coming into the intersection from us from the North and the contractor wanted to just get real close to that intersection of to to East and then turn in and they want more more clearance more distance yeah so so this is hopefully going to be done by Christmas but and then we can use these adjacent ways about 620 cash balances for some of that and that's where we are with that page with the cash budget summary if we look at the cash balances page and you look at fund 691 that's our school facilities board fund a month ago that was about 25 million now it's 26.6 million that's encumbered the school facilities board has just approved three sets of bleachers for our district one at Heritage Middle School and two at the high school and those total 377 000 of those three sets of bleachers as well as doing a separate well it's all going to be done eventually all the buildings in the district weatherized eventually because we had the fire and then we had the flood here back in September at the I call it the high school aplex is there a better name of Miss wolf than the eight classrooms that adjoined I just call it the high school eight collections I call it the 10 bill okay yeah okay so that's where it is straight behind us here about 400 feet and we've got a contractor lined up to just weatherize that bill you know what you may know when we had the flood in September after the fire in June the contractors came in and cleaned out the two main rooms 14 and 50 that had that fire so they were straight clean new sheetrock then here came the rain in September so that company rigged off the site until we could get the roof from leaking down onto their new sheetrock so that's kind of where we're at and sfbrth has improved 100 000 at least for that building and it's the 10 the 10 building aplex would be weatherized and not have water as well as the South gym that's on the schedule too where the windows of the South our facilities director tells me when the water comes in from the south it just comes right through not just the glass deal but right through the wall through the parking so that's that's on the agenda to be replaced and repaired as well so that's why it's up to 26.6 million and all funded by the school facility support and uh I do track on the uh cash flow analysis I do track year-to-date revenues district-wide September year-to-date revenues were 3.7 million expenses 5.7 so you say well there's a two million dollar Advantage I guess you could say if it's like two horses going to the finish line here expenses were greater than the revenues in the month of September by 2 million but in October revenues took a nice jump now year-to-date revenues the end of October or 8.5 and you're the expense is 7.4 so we had tremendous property tax revenue there in state equal is coming in and we're getting a really decent payment 165 000 a month for a classroom site fund that's a good certified teacher funding so so I think again overall the district's in pretty sound shape any questions we'll read along then to item 6c2 best of an activity report great yeah great so there's really there's two here uh we have the September report for your review as well as October the big difference is if you look at September the top page there the 5820 it's about three quarters of the way down uh High School boys soccer Rings came in and that was encumbered well now that's been spent in those dollars and then you see we've also got increased encumbrances for student council and I think the best word for student council activities is endless is that right Miss wolf just endless they've been covered in other eight hundred dollars Council but endless activities other than I know they've got a place looked for is it is it prompt and if they do um I believe they're back at Prescott vibes last time that's just every every club and activity that we have these four is just if there are any questions thank you that's unusual for you down here what can I say yeah item seven a through n the consent agenda we may have any questions entertain a motion then to approve the consent agenda as presented I'll make a motion to present the approval of the can say all in favor aye thank you item 8A edition of skilled maintenance worker um Mr Schultz I'm actually going to ask um Chris to come up Mr Sheriff just in case there's any questions but we are planning to do some projects and um one thing that uh Chris has done Chris is our facilities director um is really trying to do things in-house because it can be done um we think um better and and um at a lower cost than if we go out to a contractor if we could even find a contractor that's part of the issue um but one of the issues that we have is we can load up the facilities Department in other areas can can get neglected because we're putting a bunch of people on this project so um an example that we want to move forward with is the bathrooms at the football field we think we can do those in-house another is a wall at territorial in the um in the playground so that we can stop Lake territorial from forming when it rains if you've been over there and they're doing work now to install some uh playground equipment I believe and so um that's what we're asking for is two maintenance workers that are actually going to relieve more experienced guys that can go work on these construction projects project these have been maintenance level rather than you know more Construction level we have the construction level guys already on staff and I'll let Chris talk about that my staff is well-rounded in multiple areas you know I've got framers I've got plumbers I've got electricians I've got AC tax so there's really not much we can't do right now the problem is what happens is I pull them out to do these projects and on the maintenance side is getting neglected so I'm trying to give you these projects done if I could have two more bodies brought in to help take care of that then we can do a lot better and for those that know Bruce Nesbitt he's his um second his his assistant director and Bruce built buildings in California and built buildings here he has he has a lot of expertise to kind of leave those construction projects so we we have the expertise it's just a matter of backfilling those guys so those other projects don't don't go by the wayside with Bruce we'll be having him basically run the run the construction side between me and him he'll be asking who like we'll be scheduling out which guys is he going to take next week that way I keep the other guys for maintenance he'll take two guys each week and we just do a rotation depending on where we're at in the project do you guys do side work [Laughter] you already have people in mind for the positions there's a lot of guys actually are in in staff right now that would like to promote up oh okay um and like I said we're already well well staffed so if I just get more men on the ground to be able to go and handle the easy onesie choose the work orders that are out there and I can promote more guys upward it'd be great and I actually have three of our guys right now that come and see me today about these positions we have had a anticipated opening on our website and I think you've gotten at least one application from one application interviewed uh uh last Thursday yeah and they have to be licensed and bonded is that how that works with maintenance I'm not sure no we don't since it's uh our own entity we can we can do it within there are some things we'll need to pull permits on and that kind of stuff but it's not uh we'll work with the city and hopefully they're not as sticklers about some of the things that we're trying to get done but for the most part I've always had a pretty good dealing with Dan travel any questions just part of a long-term plan is permanent yes um we would keep this going until the projects are done and we have at least probably two years of projects in line right now and and on the budget side the there's money that has been encumbered already to um so it wouldn't have to come out of that eight hundred thousand dollars it's already it's available in the budget it's been encumbered already in anticipation just the bathrooms alone at the high school would with the annual salary of the two guys coming in and the parts of material it takes to build that bathroom would cover having it hiring a contractor to install that and then you still got and that's going to take us maybe two months and you've still got another 10 months out of the year to use those guys for whatever we need to do any other questions action items so I entertain a motion please I would love position of a school maintenance worker and a skilled maintenance worker two positions so one and two okay and we have a second um all in any questions all in favor aye thank you thank you item 8B um employee economic survey results Mr Schultz so um at the request of Mr Fogle and I'm probably going to hand it over to him because I know he's he's looked at this pretty closely um the orb requested or can work we worked with see act we worked with the board came up with the the survey that was put out for um after fall break and these are the results that was done through SurveyMonkey we had 159 respondents which I think is pretty good because we probably have about 230 or so regular employees that would have access to this and so um you know we've got a fairly good response rate and um just it's open for discussion I just wanted to kind of hand it off to Mr Fogel first so one of the things that I'm interested in uh do you shared this with the faculty and staff at a seaac meeting right I haven't shared the results yet because I thought that was um I don't think we had them yet oh okay yes okay I thought that was uh well I think your first question we did share that with it yeah right yeah and so I'm sort of curious as to what kind of reaction and response there's been um throughout the district about the survey and then sharing the results and I suspect there were maybe some comments uh at the last seaac reading about this not not a lot um and this has not been shared with the staff as a whole I wanted to kind of throw give it to you guys first and then we would make it available to the to the staff but haven't received a whole lot of comments there's what I'm glad to see is there's a lot of you know comments as part of the comments section which you know is a it provides kind of an anonymous um way to do those comments so that people don't feel like you know it can be open more open than anything else um but there wasn't a whole lot of discussion at CX so one of my reactions to the data was that there seems to be perceived and expressed um uh economic difficulties with about 73 or so of uh those that responded to this um which I thought was significant and um I'm not entirely sure what it is ultimately that we do with this other than I think that informs us and if we are going to continue to move forward with a strategic plan John planning process that in anticipation of that I think this is good data to bring to that and becomes part of that artist that that discussion um and that I think that it is been the philosophy of the administration for a long time to um move as many dollars as we can into workers pockets um I trust that um we may want to ask some really hard questions in the strategic planning process or maybe even right now I mean I I guess I'm bringing it up to the rest of the board um hard questions with regards to the budget where you might be able to find ways to continue to move money into our employees Pockets um part of the discussion at siac which I thought was interesting is there's been a lot of discussion about um kind of I'll say I'll call them working conditions right and um that that I think there needs to be a balance with that you know you and I had talked about maybe hiring some staff and um lowering class sizes and things like that and bringing back preps and things like that that I think needs to be balanced with um the providing more money um because you know changing the working conditions May May make it more appealing to stay um you know I think we have some natural uh you know the four day week is huge for us um that is a significant uh that's something that that keeps our staff here um and bring staff in is that four day week um but I think that's that's that's one of one of the things that concerned me was and it wasn't like a lot but there's people in here talking about not getting raises and we you know if you think about what's happened over the past five years with the minimum wage going from you know we're 1380 right now and um and that's that's gone up from eight you know that's kind of significantly and we've given some significant reasons on the class on the certified side as well and so that's just it's it's interesting to me that that that perception is out there that we're not giving raises um now it may not be keeping up with with inflation and I I don't want to argue that because that's that I'm I'm losing but we have been giving raises and in many cases significant races and this last year was twice we gave two races and that there's that perception out there that we're not and that that's a little bit interesting to me so yeah it's not satisfying the economic stress they're feeling that's fundamentally I think what's going on right so I had a question so you said earlier that there were 307 people that are paid out of the district but we only surveyed 230 so who's expecting we gave it out to everybody but um it went out on all accounts and are all accounts typically go to our regular employees so they don't include like substitutes they don't include coaches things like that so these would be our our people that you know our bus drivers our aides um maintenance uh you know our custodians administrative staff teachers uh counselors things like that so what I call our regular staff which are the ones that are not um on typically on a timesheet or on an ace type and contract so I think this is so like I'm reading the comments and I think this is so sad like some people like more than one are living in a RV or a camper or with family I mean these are the people that are teaching their children that's just really sad one of the things that and we had this discussion today you know we pay pretty well as far as um above the minimum wage we we need to just to remain competitive but one of the things that that people um that hurts is 12 12 and a half percent of your salaries taken out for retirement so um if you're living paycheck to paycheck that retirement is not as important to you as having that money in your in your salary and so that that makes it but we don't have a choice it's not something that we can opt out of and so that's that is you know a disadvantage that we have um there's people that want that retirement and and rely on it and you know I'm pretty close you know I appreciate it after working for 25 years but um you know if you're again if you're paycheck to paycheck that 12 and a half percent is Meaningful it's significant and and unfortunately we don't have anything that we can do to offset that and you know I can't remember I think I started in 97 uh 1997.

[Music] um all right but now we will move on to item number nine percentage there are not as many as usual in here we have a motion to approve this energy let's make a motion to improve the consensus any discussion on the consent agenda I'm really happy that Ashley montelia is coming back so permanent stuff for the rest of the year she's going to cover of maternity leave for those of you that don't know team and also a young man stand

ah let me look here you know what Kevin I might have to do I can't remember I don't want to tell you wrong but I think that would be uh percent of teachers that missed less a certain number of days and I don't remember how many days that is though um yeah but it is it is uh the state had the same issue so it is lower uh it is we do have a worse attendance rate than the state somebody else was gonna think 10. okay fewer than 10. and how many sick days are they allowed in contract 13 is the minimum that's interesting they don't track it until after they wouldn't start the tracking after that point oh because it does seem like it looks like 59 seems like it's an outrageous number but if yeah so 59 have less than 10 days absence is what that means or being penalized because the teachers are taking their allowed absences yeah I mean honestly there's uh it's just uh they're not they're just putting a number there they're not holding us accountable to anything but yeah it doesn't look good yeah that's why it was yeah I didn't know if it was the lower number was that like golf or a little yeah yeah in this case a higher number yeah in this case higher number would be better I don't remember I have to look back I mean I can look at prior years Data before the covid uh to see too how we compared but um yeah some of this is does that mean does that mean we only have 40 of teachers that use less than 10 sick days a year no the 60 no the 59 percent represents the percent of teachers that use less than ten they use less than ten yeah so 40 use more than 10.

this is a reminder that the committee meeting is open to the public to listen to and watch the conversation and dialogue and we do have public comment at those meetings um I wanted to touch a little bit about safe and inclusive schools tonight earlier this year we had a presentation from Mr Bell and Mr frieders and what we're doing to increase safety in our schools this is something that we're always looking at and how to ensure the safest environment for our students and staff in conversations with them last week I asked for an update and asked for some items we talked about earlier this year with the board as well as items I've asked them to look into presents them they shared that they've been working uh extremely hard with the other District departments to monitor installation of our camera system and overall live stream video infrastructure for the elementary buildings uh Mr frieders has taken an active road our life safety walks with Roe and to upgrade our district radios which is a big project here in 308 we're currently looking at additional safety mitigation measure measures at our initial point of entries for all of our school buildings uh in the form of updated call boxes and protective window film and we are in the process of updating our intergovernmental agreements with our law enforcement Partners on body worn cameras and live stream camera access in the event of an active threat situation about any more cameras legislation passed and is going into effect on January 1st of this of 2023.
