yeah yeah absolutely absolutely thank you yeah and thank you for that invitation um just wondering from the folks who are on the call here is that a date that works for you to participate you don't mind yep so it's December 10th from uh 10 to 11 A.M yes I'm good so I'm gonna put it down that one's good excellent good and where did we say this was this is going to be at Rogers Park Middle School so put us down that sounds good great beautiful and the event around that will go till what time um we we open up probably about quarter of eight and we're done by one okay yeah so it's a full morning okay yeah it is a full morning parents will get to choose two out of the four choices on workshops um so there's a social emotional literacy Math and Science awesome Yep is there coffee there's Breakfast with coffee yes absolutely absolutely yeah it's really important for us to start off the morning with a family is all eating together and then the kids go off and do their activities while the families um spend time with our curriculum folks and um and each Workshop will be done in English Spanish and Portuguese and they'll leave with bags of goodies to take home and um work with their children at their house magnetic letters with a cookie sheet because many of our refrigerators now don't hold magnets anymore so we'll Supply a cookie sheet for them they'll leave with books they'll leave with other math manipulatives and other writing materials as well yeah that's awesome it's good it sounds like a great event yeah um I think you have agenda item number two as well Dr Mead and that was um discussion about the learning engagement opportunities around the upcoming budget [Music] back a couple weeks ago bang was able to provide you the 23 budget calendar and along with looking at the dates on that and speaking with cabinet Dr selig and of course our superintendent um we decided that we would go ahead and work with Erica Haynes who is from the state um it's a private organization or it's actually a non-profit organization the school and state finance project they have the most up-to-date information about the funding streams how funding works and they've taken a step further where they've really worked with what do families need to know to be active and really effective change agents around budgets in schools and so Erica and her folks will be coming down for a couple of different um events that we'll be having we do start off you know Kevin has already started to talk about budget I know in the board meeting the finance committee last night there was even a question and I think the timeline has been reviewed as well but um and then I know that Kevin was at Citywide PTO on uh Monday night and so that will be the first um what do families want from um the budget what are they what's important to them for their students to make sure that we include in the budget and that will start with uh Citywide PTO meaning we'll then go to the next week where we'll have kind of a dual purpose um Community listening Forum from the families that will invite everyone in the district it'll be via Zoom I think we may try to do it in person but I think via Zoom might be best um where we'll again ask that questions you know where do parents want to see money be spent in our schools and so we'll elicit that response from families also at that point Erica will be there and she will do a half an hour presentation for our families on exactly what is read my notes here because she's given me some good stuff to talk about um talking um about um what you really care about out loud telling your story telling your family's story about what's really important to you and then the state funding streams and so she'll give us kind of a budget 101 quickly and then really you know getting families to think about how do you tell your story um because this year's approach is going to be a little bit different with our budget we're really looking at a student-centered approach for how we design the budget and so it's going to be really really important for families to hear that and be able to articulate their needs for their students um and then uh you know the rest of December is kind of lost to the holidays and so we we know families are super super busy at that that point so we'll pick up again in January with more workshops uh keys to successful advocacy and more on telling your story and so I'm just outlining these dates now and confirming them with her but it will have different opportunities it'll be you know listening because we're in the December and early January we'll still be working on that putting that budget together and then um we really want to um get families or or have families have the tools that they need to be able to advocate for the budget be able to feel very comfortable about talking um at city council which will be very important about sharing this information with their neighbors and other elected officials and things like that so the more empowerment we can do the more families will be able to really be effective during this next year so that's a little bit about what's going on with that so are there any questions or thoughts or other opportunities yeah just quickly say those dates for the the first one which is what do the parents want and then the community do you have dates or are we yeah yeah so they um the very first day is actually at a Citywide PTO meeting on December 5th okay and then we go right back to the next week to December 12th or the following week and that will be the community Forum the listening Forum of what families want and that's where Erica will do that half an hour workshop for families about the estate and local funding streams and how to talk about what you're doing and then we'll move into more dates into into January and where are they being held we're not sure if they're going to be in person right now or Zoom we have found that we've had really good results with these Zoom meetings um I was really excited to say that in your board meeting last week you had 68 families watching and so that that's huge that's you know a larger number than we've seen um you know when we talk about you know arranging child care and the family's driving time to get there and rushing from work we're really finding that Zoom has become very very effective with getting our parents out and spending time so we may make this virtual or we may do a combination of both I know I won't be in town on the fifth I'll be out of it so people are aware um but yeah let me know what the 12th is at the time thank you yeah and can I just clarify Dr V that um Eric is going to be speaking at that Citywide PTO meeting is that right um no that city-wide PTO more meeting I I don't think she's coming down for that I believe that's Kevin and his um John Spang or Eddie Miranda actually doing that presentation okay I'll check on that but yeah I don't I don't have her down for coming down to um for that but she might okay yeah thank you I will check any other questions all right we are moving right along here um the last conversation we're have on the agenda here is ongoing Outreach forums to promote the Danbury Career Academy I think Dr selig this is yours yeah and this is more just to kind of open up to the group and I know you had some thoughts on it Kate you and I talked a little bit about some ideas that we had um so we'd originally thought about using one of the um parent University events on in November um to do this but the more we thought about it and talked through it it just it just really felt shoehorned in there um and like we were sort of forcing it into a place that didn't belong with the you know granted it would have been a sort of you know ready you know made audience but it just it just didn't feel right so we pulled back on that and we wanted to again just kind of come back to think about different forms and and you know you know Avenues to to introduce Brent Dean to the community whether it's parents or you know business folks or Chamber of Commerce people the education Community we just want to make sure he's you know people know his face and who he is and you know what he does and you know his his piece in the you know in establishing Partnerships with the Career Academy is just too important we just want to make sure he's not you know um you know flying under the radar so we really wanted to think a little bit more broadly with the whole group about different places we can you know kind of present him out and maybe do some you know panel mod or you know moderated panels or q and A's or um even just places he could get up and you know maybe talk for 10 minutes about about you know what we're trying to accomplish and um you know open up some some you know some networks for for him to to explore you know new training opportunities curriculum what have you so I'll leave it there and if anybody you know has any anything to start you know throw out there please please jump in Julie hi Julie hi I'm sorry that I'm late um but based on the same surgery that you were talking I would say the uh City centers has quite a few um activities during the month of um December and those are good for the found those are going to be um surrounded by family in general terms so you should reach out to uh Lazaro I believe he can help you out with that great and if I get to know anything else maybe I I I'll let you guys know okay I'll reach out to you offline for a few more details perfect thank you is there any way we can um we could speak to Brent to find out what Avenues he might be trying to develop and maybe we have you know what I mean maybe a personal connection to somebody in that industry or you know like I'm really sure I've seen him a lot but I've never really gotten down to the roots of what is it you're looking like which boxes are you looking to try to check so maybe if he could like jump on or just to speak with us to know like you know what I'm saying like who we might know to get those Avenues started because I really have no idea what he's looking for or or really what the need is that he wants to fill right away I don't know just a suggestion yeah some of that will dovetail right with um the curriculum work that Dr kazimero is doing is that right oh yeah definitely yeah it'll all it'll all ultimately funnel into the curriculum piece so it might be a good idea to have uh both of them are for that conversation because I I think you know Brent will certainly appreciate any help we can lend him um I just want to make sure also that we're we're talking about the idea of you know how to expand Community knowledge about what the Career Academy is because I think you know Brent is certainly an integral part of that and we want to do everything we can to assist you know the the work he's going to be doing connecting um business and industry to our schools but we also I think have some work to do as far as helping just keep the Community Danbury understand what it is that we're trying to do with when we say wall-to-wall academies what that means and what that looks like mm-hmm so I guess in in that way like Dr selig um we talked he talked we talked a little bit about um some kind of forum which I think is still um a good idea what do you guys think about that um but it's a great idea that we do need to kind of if we want to help push them along you're absolutely right curriculum and this relation community relations need to both be on that same page so I I think it's a great idea because we all know a lot of people we might be able to you know yeah start you know what I mean engaging in those conversations I know I'm not really sure what direction we're going in as far as that you know like what I need to how I can help yeah so I mean just a standalone event you know just a Tuesday night at uh you know one of the schools and we just get the word out okay is that something we'd want to we want what we want to try to do that before the holidays or maybe wait till January February yes that was going to be my question if we're trying to push uh how I mean if we're trying to push activities by the end of this year or up at the beginning of next one because everybody should be pretty much stuff in between the holidays and all this so we don't have much time between days and weeks I might suggest that we wait for this until January I think that's just a better time we can start to Market it at the beginning of December and then again through newsletters uh Kevin's newsletter or um chats with Kevin and just different things that we mail out and send out to our parents I know that in Kevin's uh letter that went out last week yes last week um there was more about the Career Academy in there I have a second page on that that I will go ahead and combine those two together and then work with Cara and Brent to do a really good one pager on what is the Career Academy and then we can build off of that and I know that Cara um and Brent will will be returning their their way right now at a conference but they'll be coming back with even more ideas on how to present this out to the public and then we'll work with them to make sure we get it out in all the different languages and that might be a opportune um night to have in person at you know one of the middle schools or at the high school right I rather concur with Anne I think between now until after the students come back from the Christmas holidays parents minds are elsewhere they have enough to think about and we this way that might be a little Lull in the activity file and we can engage them and hold their attention a little bit longer it also gives us some time to formulate the The Forum a little bit but you know more cohesively um I do think also it would be helpful to you know to your point earlier Dr Mead it would be great for us to do both an in-person forum and if that you know is successful then also doing perhaps a forum on Zoom um you know to give better access especially if we're looking at winter time and there's weather and they're not interested in them being out so great so I'm looking ahead at the calendar we have January 18th slated as our next committee meeting so for that one maybe we asked Dr casimiro and Brent to join us to talk through it and then we aim to do something within the week or two following I'm sorry say that again Mr Dr selig we have January 18th slated as our next committee meeting so we invite Dr casimiro and Brent to that meeting we can talk through some of just you know General issues but also to Michelle's point you know if there's any friction points that they're finding or you know places they're trying to get access to um and then we can have the you know the first of these in the in the couple weeks right after that sounds great okay they're ready you know Mike's on the board over there so I think you know as long as we kind of know or even if we put it on parent Square because you know there's a lot of parents that have a lot of these connections as well so somehow trying to incorporate that with what what you were saying about what is the Career Academy then how can you help you know how can you know because basically this is Grassroots right so maybe that's a great way to try to engage them as well you know or maybe you have like a team like this week we're going to be working on this Academy you know who do we know I don't know how we break it up but yeah yeah it's another tool yeah that'd be a fun way to use parent Square too just kind of like an alcohol you know anybody have friends that are you know dentists yeah all right okay good yeah any other questions or thoughts Lauren Rachel anything I think I'm good okay all right good as well thank you well this is a very quick meeting but I really appreciate everybody making a little bit of time and we'll let you go early could I just get a motion to adjourn please okay second okay all those in favor bye all right thank you so much everyone

significant chunk of your life and I wanted to thank you because I I know in this position sometimes there's decisions that sometimes we don't want to make and there's decisions particularly in the last several years that we've made the board has made excuse me and to that that took incredible courage and I congratulate you for that in addition to the board as well so congratulations to 21 years Christina Chris Madrid who's in the audience as well [Applause] and I did want to but before I asked my my colleague if she has anything to share I want to see if there was anyone else here that wanted to speak um and and share a comment uh this this evening foreign oh my God I am so proud of my lovely wife they don't increase Gonzalez um when I first met her and I had learned that she was uh elected a lot longer than I was I was like he's got more experience than I do probably smarter than I am where she is and so um It's been a it's been a wonderful Journey with you and um I've enjoyed um learning our school board both uh do your business I mean I've enjoyed also uh tagging along to some of your school board conferences and getting to know a lot of your colleagues and just growing art network of friends or circle of some of them become family and so I'm very proud of you love you and uh I'm enjoying to now I'm looking forward to having uh more time to spend with you so thank you for uh giving us back my wife good evening my name is Victor Gonzalez my one she's always my daughter I just want to share with you all right she had just come back but it might be hello in July president middle June it's been about two extra weeks in the first first week of July EPA president other s it's just bad I'm more call if I didn't run anything I understand and then on the Wednesday for the Friday to for the deadline she says Dad let's go on the I know sign up for what okay he took out her papers I'm home and on Friday let's go for two hours and she said to go turn them in no okay let's go return them in came back to the car I said I forgot one paper so I'm not really running for people with that statement I knew next morning for office he's ready she wanted to back out but she didn't run he'd come back and she won because he was lucky to back into the Union like she was part of a group of eight candidates eight candidates around that uh election and they all won here's one it seemed like yesterday now it looked 21 is later still the same I'm the same thank you very much [Applause] no I didn't plan on doing this uh so my first experience with Sheila mean was like many of you coming to these board members and and then following up with emails and driving you all crazy um and from seeing your Poise and the way you would represent represent the community I had a lot of respect for um then through the opportunity of our children being in class together I've had the honor of getting to know you and that you truly speak for children as if it was your own the way you advocate for your son for your child and those experiences and opportunities you want to give him is what you have worked so hard to give to the community and when I first got involved and somebody said you want to make change talk to Sheila Nini and it's been an honor witnessing that and to now call you a friend and to know that it doesn't end here because I know that you're constantly doing things for the community and I thank you for being a person with virtue and values that models it and walks your talk so thank you congratulations anyone else and I will turn to my colleague board member Rodriguez painted let me get my clinics on so you know um and and 2001 I do remember shilonin and her dad at La Flor de Mexico back in the days when she first ran for office and I'm like well that young girl you know she's running for school board wow you know how impressive I was that she had the guts and the nerve to do it because it's not easy when you want to run for office or you want to make a difference as young as she is was you know I've known her family for over 20 years but then she don't even comes you know and she has always given her heart to the students here of Azusa and also to the community that's how I know her but um and um the thing is in in 2011 she comes knocking on my door to what to recruit me and say Hey you know no there's a school board um you know seat open you want to run and I'm like okay come on I'll help you okay sure so I come in but you know shironin is being so young she has been my mentor she's been been my mentor since day one she took me to csda ACL SBA introduced you to a lot everyone knows her they go oh you're in she don't need sport I'm like like it was her board right because everyone knows her that way I'm like no it's this is the board but you know I'm like you know I could be so smart you know I'm here the first year and I'm she knows everything and I'm like but I have to realize Yolanda you've been there one year she's been there 10 years but I always looked up to her she came to my house and showed me how to do the agenda how to follow it properly and when you didn't help I know I can always turn on her she was one of the best board members that you can ask for I'm gonna miss her because her knowledge is incredible not only known a lot of people she knows a lot of programs she knows the right direction she knows the right thing to say I'm gonna miss her um sitting across the road this time it's like a marriage right we've been through thick and thin we've been screamed back we've been kicked up we've been yelled at we've been congratulated on and we also have to get we all stick together so I am going to Mr truly you know I'll miss you and I'll say I I think back yeah on just the the pleasure of being able to serve with you on this board over the cap of course these past four years and and just thinking the the roller coaster ride that was this past four years and recognizing that you have have been here and you have ridden those those highs and those lows here in this community continuing as so many have already said to advocate for to speak on behalf of to be a voice to to promote Elevate and platform the voices of others um you have have been a an inspiration to me as I as I Look to what it means to be a school board member and and and yeah it's incredible as everybody has shared the ways that you have not only been a mentor but but also just your your your Brilliance and and the ways that you bring that to to this board to this district and to this community and so we we wouldn't be who we are without you having been uh just such a strong part of this team for so many years and we are we we celebrate you as as you you head out but we also you know definitely recognize that the loss uh that we have uh with you not no longer sitting around this table but are so grateful for the times that we had or the votes that you've made for the tough decisions that you've needed to to weigh and consider um and I am just personally grateful uh to know you as a colleague to know you as a friend um and and to to share in this community um with you and so I just want to personally say congratulations to you foreign behalf of the Azusa Unified School District we have awarded to shielding Cruz Gonzalez and recognition and appreciation for your service as a member of the Board of Education of the Azusa Unified School District from 2001 to 2022.

um pardoned the um Interruption here I see that um Miss Goldstein has raised her digital hand and it might be helpful for somebody to establish a protocol how you would like to handle it if somebody has something to say thank you so much Cameron um I think for now if we can rely on your help I I don't have that on my end on Zoom if you could just let me know when that happens um is that the only hand raised um I think I would like to open the floor to my school team and go ahead thank you I would like to nominate Renee libato as the chair of this committee thank you so much on second denomination thank you all right and um until we uh established a secretary may I ask uh Ramona Lewis do you mind taking roll call for the vote um if I may jump in here uh I think I've heard from two folks if it's possible just to see what other uh folks might have to say about nominating I do think it makes sense to uh nominate chair first but it might be uh wise to just make sure that others who might not have found the raise hand function as quickly as others have a fair opportunity to find that if we could call upon the technical expertise and guidance of the staff here of course this is Cameron wise again and at this time I see no other digital hands raised if anybody is having trouble raising the digital hand and they wish to speak I would invite you to unmute yourselves and just speak up and I'm continuing to watch the list here and I don't see any other digital hands raised as of yet and there's still no digital hands raised media member Lovato because this is a vital and a first that uh this committee is embarking upon I wonder if it would be acceptable to the committee members as a whole to run through the membership list just to make sure that everyone is who has anything else to put forward in terms of the nomination or um any type of input yeah I um I think we can open it up for discussion or um I would say we just move on to do roll call and everyone vote is that okay with the rest of the committee or um or I could ask if we have any more thank you Terry yeah maybe that's a better appropriate word we have a motion to close the nominations do we have a second I second the motion thank you and then Miss Lewis do you mind reading um the real calls that you have it um apparently there's Anderson I vote for Renee Lovato Ms Boyce I superintendent chancho aye superintendent gazowski hi president Goldstein aye mayor Huseman hi president Lovato hi Mr Lucero hi Ms Molina aye Ms Ramos aye Ms Rivas uh thank you Ms van bolericom I Madam president that is um 12 eyes thank you so much um next I would like to open the floor for nominations for a vice chair um I would like to start and and um I would nominate um Miss Laurie Goldstein for vice president a second or right here sorry thank you are there any other nominations all right do you want to do the same and may I have a motion to close nominations thank you may I have a second hi second then notion uh Miss Lewis would you mind doing roll call once again Sanderson hi his voice aye superintendent chancho I'm superintendent gadowski aye president Goldstein aye mayor Huseman hi president Lovato I Mr Lucero hi Ms Molina hi Ms Ramos aye Ms Rivas hi Ms van blericom aye great thank you so much um I would like to open the floor for nomination for secretary and as Miss king um noted if you'd like to nominate yourself if you have an interest in serving as secretary so perhaps we could nominate somebody from either the Mapleton or 27j districts because I don't believe uh that the chair or vice chair from those two districts that's a great suggestion I'll nominate Terry Lucero to be the secretary thank you Mr Ethan um second that oh go ahead and nominate myself from 27js secretary I'll second that one I'll withdraw my nomination of Terry Lucero since uh Miss uh blaircon volunteered herself all right well um with we have a motion and a second uh Miss Lewis may ask you to read roll call one more time did we have a second in terms of uh Amanda serving as Secretary of her shaking her head no I think just for uh the commonality of procedure I think you had invited a motion to close nominations for the prior I moved to read closed nominations first secretary all right nominations are now closed um Ramona would you please yes Ms Anderson aye Ms Boyce I superintendent chancho aye superintendent gadowski aye president Goldstein aye mayor Huseman president Lovato hi Mr Lucero I'm sorry I didn't hear Mr Lucero hi thank you Ms Molina aye Ms Ramos aye Ms Rivas aye Ms van blericom aye great great job guys we have our our officers constituted step one um next on the agenda let me see sorry I'm chair could I interject for a moment of course uh the law is also requiring that the newly uh voted secretary is certified to the commissioner the board or sorry the committee members and the officers just voted in um if I can just note that and have the committee either discuss or approve I'm happy to help with that formality but it is required now that it's okay accomplished it is required to be written down and certified to the commissioner under the statute yes and so how would we do that electronically we just need to vote or direct someone to do that the secretary by Statute is the one who's responsible for that if the board would just acknowledge and authorize the secretary to take that action please I would like to make a motion to um uh authorize our secretary to um certify the vote of the committee positions appointees what's that okay yes and other proceedings according to the statute okay may I have a second I will second thank you and then roll call once again miss King Kim do we need to vote if you don't mind and no not at all just as we get into the habit of this thank you yes um and Miss Lewis um do you mind reading roll call until we can get the um list over to our secretary yes ma'am okay thank you sir Ms Anderson hi this Boyce hi superintendent chancho aye superintendent gadowski I president Goldstein um my internet wigged out for a minute what are we voting on to um authorize the secretary to certify certify their proceedings and the officers hi thank you um mayor Huseman hi president Lovato aye Mr Lucero aye Ms Molina aye Ramos hi Ms Rivas hi Ms van blerkom aye thank you all um we're running close to time here I think next on the agenda was to discuss um a facilitator for the group um I do um appreciate the guidance that we've received um from Miss Kim but I do think it's important that we have a facilitator to lead this process um I I would open the floor up to any discussion um as to how we go about that foreign I would recommend a third party thank you I agree um I think if you guys are okay with it um you can charge me or the committee chair or vice chair and secretary to bring forward some uh names to our next meeting if that's okay um I think there's a lot more that goes along with that um as far as uh procurement issues like I'm not sure if this is something Adam's 14 would have to pay for and get reimbursed from CDE or CDE would um outright help with securing a facilitator and then if so um do we follow those procurement procedures or the districts there there's just some questions around that which I think can be part of that um finding out process um and then finally I think really quick is uh Miss Kim if you don't mind helping with timelines like I'm not sure um if there are deadlines like I I know this was the big one was to bring forward the committee by uh within 30 days but I'm not sure um as to a future deadlines yes uh there are a number that will apply and it will be a multiple step process and I'm glad to report at this point that uh the chair can work on the next agenda for the next meeting the setting I think will have to be just sorted out in terms of how and who but I do recommend that a staff person and a non-board member do that because of some of the overlapping open meetings issues and stuff in the spirit of just making sure that we find the right place to have those uh functions filled for the time being that would be my recommendation and I'm happy to consult um in building that agenda but as you know from the public process this is function of government this committee is acting for a specific purpose and transparency and notice of its meetings are of very high importance as the committee goes about its business so um I do not believe that there is a set deadline for the next meeting and I think it would just be noticed and scheduled in due course timing being of course a little sensitive in the school area at various times of the year so yeah especially now with Thanksgiving break and um finals and Christmas break coming up um we have one digital hand up this is Cameron wise we have a digital hand up it is um superintendent gadowski thank you so much Mr mccrudowski Madam chair uh I would look to you to survey folks and see what dates and times might work uh obviously a large group I just want to express my interest in uh our next meeting being in person if it can be and ideally in Adam's 14 so that we're within the community uh when we have our next meeting great suggestion and I think um I had spoke with Miss Kim earlier and I think because um it is greatly impacting Adams 14 we would love to invite you all um to come to our schools and and meet in person there and provide dinner so um we have the lovely support of Miss Ramona Lewis and Cameron and our Communications team so I'm happy to um connect with Miss Kim and and work with our team to get the next meeting scheduled Madam president if I could just add one thing the legal part is nobody's favorite but it is part and parcel of the committee's charge um so I just note that again the purpose of the committee is still being formulated at this time or the the path through um that all discussions that would be committee business I'm sure has some overlap with other of the conversations you have but uh to please save discussion of committee business for this committee when all the members can be present or a quorum thereof but also for the public to be able to observe so that is what I request for for this point in time and I will be Consulting with the chair on how best to deliver that as a future agenda item okay great thank you um and I think one final um ask is um I know we did talk about uh 106 versus 129 as far as proceeding wise for this committee um and how we move forward so if um it would be okay to get that authorization from the committee for me to um get that information from Miss Kim and in her office uh just in preparation for our next meeting all right well two minutes over hopefully not too bad I apologize for the Fast and Furious nature of this um initial meeting um thank you all again for taking the time out to um meet with us and go through this process and um we'll be reaching out soon to um schedule next meeting and next steps all right May um and I don't know if we need to follow usual procedures but may I have a motion to adjourn so moved thank you I may have a second thank you um can we avoid roll call and just say all in favor aye okay awesome never know with with the roles thank you so much um hope you all have a great afternoon and um I look forward to working with you all okay thank you thank you and I'll note that time is 3 33 on November 15th 2022.

I like this Museum because it's full of Wood Sculptures and the piece called El Salon Doro Dorado also known as the golden rim this room was not only an impressive and elegant Ram but also told the story of the barucha indigenous people in conclusion I'm really glad we got to visit these museums because I got to learn about um Costa Rica Anna made me appreciate Costa Rica's Beauty even more than I already did thank you good evening sorry um so in Costa Rica Costa Rica is like a very fun trip it was like a great experience and great life like like view you know so one of my favorite Parts was the beach in the pool the beach was so much fun um at the beach we played volleyball and you could like see right there um with our teachers and we also swam in the ocean with our teachers and friends and we also play volleyball in the beach in like the water and then the beach was like really clean and the water was really nice it wasn't like too cold it was like perfect temperature so yeah and then we went to the pool afterwards and we had lunch lunch was like really good and then after that we played in the pool the pool had like a water playground and there was a lot of slides so we slowly down the slides and then we played like water polo with um our teachers and our like host families and our friends as you can see um it was so much fun and I would love to go again yeah thank you so we were going to talk a little bit about West College um first I do appreciate the opportunity of getting to travel to Costa Rica summer um we spent the first two days at West College which was our host family you know they're the ones that um kind of did it all they helped us with the planning of the um trip sorry um but it was really nice we walked in and it was like a family everyone we met greeted us um they were excited some were excited to use their English with us and some not so much but it was really great to get to meet them our host person just he took us everywhere I can't even you know we didn't sleep so that was great we got to see and visit but it was really nice to get in to see their dual language classrooms the teachers were really open the minute we walked in they would stop the classes they had songs that they shared with us um the kids were some were excited to reuse their their English and so they would talk to us in English and the teachers every question we had and we had a lot they would they were gracious and open to allow us to find out what they did in Costa Rica how it was the same um the West College had preschool it started with the babies and so it was nice to get to see them and it was interesting because some kids knew a lot of English and some knew none and so it was great to also see that piece and then they go to 11th grade in Costa Rica 11th grade is their last year of high school and then for myself I think one one of the things that I really enjoyed was to get to see our students who are in dual language use their Spanish I was in awe because you know I speak English and so when they talk to me they're always speaking in English but to get to see them and talk to in Spanish to their host families they were part of the classroom it was really joy to get to see that piece um I too am thankful that I was able to go to Costa Rica with the students um I've been a part of Junior ambassadors for a very long time first as a parent and now as a teacher in a liaison so it's gone full circle for me um West College was so welcoming we got there they had an assembly for us to welcome us there the classes had special presentations during the assembly they even provided each of the students and US teachers with gift bags that had little trinkets from their school in their little hats pins and snacks um they immediately they would feed us breakfast they fed us lunch and they just really engulfed us in their culture of their school of a family and that was just amazing to see we were able to visit almost all of the classrooms from preschool all the way up to high school and it was really interesting and seeing their lessons we're like oh we do that we do that and then oh that's interesting I really like seeing that in the classroom and the teachers were very open and having us there it was nice to have all windows open very few lights turned on it was just very open air like and um the campus was just beautiful it was just really really nice to get a different perspective of the different kind of school and what they had to offer and how like Creighton is trying to make a family community within each of our schools and to see how that really works and another school that has um maintained that type of community for a very long time even though it is a private school so it was really nice and our students really did enjoy being in different classrooms they got to see it was their end of their quarter so they got to see some of their reviews for their projects their reviews for their exams and then also they got to be a part of their little fiestas for the end of the quarter so that was really nice and we even had Miss Sabah and I um one of their students took our heart and he was just so nervous for his exams and he came up to us and he was just like I leave it up to God that he helps me get through this exam and he was so nervous about it but it was really sweet that he trusted us enough as newcomers to share that with us and share his anxiety so West College is a great sister school um for this program they did very well with their hosting and very well in just planning the end the trip for us as you can tell there was lots of learning that transcends from books and from the classroom what a great experience for our students and for our teachers but now I want to also invite one of our parents so they can give their perspective as a parent Miss Broderick governing board president um superintendent Community member staff and students so as a parent I'd like to share my perspective on the experience that my daughter had the opportunity to go through I thought it was great from the application process we didn't even know what to expect but to have to collect two letters of reference from community members or people that are not your members of your family was really impressive and I honestly don't even remember when I completed my first application for anything I think is when I went for my first job so the fact that these kids got the opportunity to go through that process and interview that they were interviewed for the process which was great and then having to commit to something I remember it was a year-long process so having to join um through WebEx unfortunately a lot of their meetings were online through WebEx just because of the nature of what we were going through at the time they still learned and and remembering going through when I have that meeting that's right but it's that determination they had to persevered through it they had to learn they had to connect with their members from Costa Rica so they got to meet them online before they went they also did a little uh about me to get paired up and partnered with a host family that would be a good fit for them so that was a big part of the experience as well but just overall the experience that they're going to have for forever and and to be a global citizen to understand that there is the way that school operates in another country or in another place and to be able to meet kids from other places and communicate with them was just something that was amazing to see and I think it has helped them develop as leaders in their community and and what the term means a junior Ambassador being an ambassador not only for their school but the district I will say they also made friends with the students from other schools which brought the Creighton family even closer together one thing as a parent I would I would like to just share with you all and for you to consider um I've had the privilege of of working with districts Elementary School Districts across the State of Arizona and I haven't seen anything like it so I would like to consider or you to consider to continue this as long as possible and then also consider finding ways to fund it for students that maybe don't have that Financial the financial means to be able to to join even though there was a significant amount of fundraising that they did it didn't cover all costs and so any student in the Creighton School District that really wants to be a part of this program an opportunity I would love to to have them be a part of it and and there should be no barriers so thank you for letting me share my experience as a parent and I hope that other future parents get the same experience for their children thank you Miss Broderick I could have not say it uh better and so there were many things that um that we're using to expand our adventure into just like means products said to expand the opportunity for all the students that are interested so some of the things that we're doing we're using some of the federal pandemic relief funds that being the priority for beyond the school enrichment opportunities for the students so we are covering using answer funds salary for teachers providing the classes for Union Ambassador for Costa Rica we also are covering with the pandemic relief funds the salaries for the teachers providing classes and Adventures for novice and Nomads novice Nomads it's a second program that all of the students that are in second grade to fifth grade they can participate in they explore different cultures every quarterly they have a different different country and a different language that they learn about and they celebrate with either uh some handcrafts or something that they if that is traditional for black country and then also the materials Nomads we also collaborate with the creative foundation and other partners for fundraising and so anybody who is needing assistance we use those donations to pay for it there's always and we're never enough money to do this and so the more ways that we can find to find and to remove all of the barriers for all of our families to being able to participate and experience that we're all outside Arizona that's our major goal and at this time we would like to say thank you for your attention and if you have any questions for our ambassadors um the only question I have is like when you guys go get hosted by the families do you actually spend the night with the families and you're there how long were you guys with the families for nine nine okay nice okay cool you guys didn't miss your bed home just kidding that's scary any questions yeah I have a few questions how many um students participated in this trip in this in this trip there were six students participating um was is West College in San Jose yes okay and so which beach what West college did was they um got they with a travel company so the travel company had both a nurse that was with us the full time that we traveled with students there was the bus driver who was part of that team okay so it was like an Excursion to the beach kind of okay um hold on I have a couple of questions and comments um um um I because you guys did experience that outdoor school um I know what you're talking about like I would love somehow to have them connected with the design committee so that they can kind of share what that experience is when we have days like today I mean it's a little chilly today but I mean just to have windows open and have fresh air flowing through classrooms is just you know it's just so nice in Arizona to be able to do that when the weather is nice so I'd love for you guys to share that experience and and just share how how awesome that feeling was and just what it meant to you with our design committee who's building you know a new school so if we could make that happen somehow that would be really cool um and I I Echo Miss broderick's um request we always want to make this program Equitable to all students um Mr carbajal you mentioned Creighton Foundation is it Creighton Community Foundation correct okay yeah there so I know that um he really wants to be able to help with fundraising for junior ambassadors so there's lots of opportunity there and we have tax credits I really I 100 want this opportunity available to all of our students and I just always want to try to expand it as much as possible um so one of my questions is how are we doing anything different to get the word out because I think this is still like a little secret not everyone knows about it you know well so our coordinator who's actually traveling in Egypt right now that's uh which is with Ruth Allen she does a very good job of going to all of the schools finding the Liaisons and then through the liaisins uh each teacher uh expresses the middle school students and every student who is interested to recruit we hold different meetings to families and everybody who's interested and then many many families they have different um situations for some is an inability to get a passport and then they travel that so there's interest that is reality of getting a passport for some others they start the program and then in the middle something happens and then they say sorry we cannot go but we're always trying to do the tax credits we always do the fundraising with our partners the fundraisings that they do in collaboration with student council in PTO and then the current Community Foundation has been a great partner they're actually it's Jeff world if you're watching thank you because of all of the support that they do they have provided all of the materials and supplies for no business uh materials really fast great um and just thank you to the Liaisons and chaperones and students great presentation thank you very much thank you that brings us to the crane Academy update thank you madam president once again members of the board executive team welcome to uh actually to our students who are leading the presentation tonight they are going to allow Ms Cartier to be a part of it but this is a fully student facilitated student-led conversation this evening my chair watch your head good evening members of the board executive team and cabinet my name is Emerson and I'm Paisley we've brought our principal Miss carty and a great team to tell you what has been going on at the Creighton Academy after school this year we have four goals and tonight you'll hear about our progress on each one our first goals in the area of academics and it's the one you'll hear about the most tonight first I'd like to be talking about gifted and talented I enjoy going because it gives a challenge the first thing we do is a warm-up for example a picture times a picture equals a number or a picture times a number equals another picture right now we're working on ecosystems they pick an animal we research it all that stuff now I have mixed Kennedy our instructional coach here to share about our team leads when it comes to academics the first way we support students is by supporting our teachers that's why I'm so excited to be the instructional coach at the Creighton Academy however in order for them to get as much support as they need and deserve it's important for us to build capacity through our team leaders because of the strong commitment and ownership of our school this year we have four team leaders who are supporting our teachers they work in tandem with me hi I'm email I'm Imani Yang and I'm in the Cardinals cubby I love being at a multi-age school because I get to work with kids that are older and younger than me all the time I also really get what I need academically during our walk to what you need time so during math I walked to miss Lewis's class with about half of my class and half of them stay in the class and we learned fifth grade math even though that I'm actually a fourth grader it helps me push my brain because next year I'll have even harder stuff our teachers give us progress reports are our teachers give us progress reports every month just so we can see what we have to work on and what we are good at the science of reading has evolved from a wide spread of research design experimental method participants and statistical analysis this conclusive research provides us with the information we need to get a deeper understanding of how we learn to read and what skills are involved and how they work together and which parts of the brain are responsible for our reading here is a short clip of a person second grade class implementing the science reading cute people so it was a little bit quiet but um what's happening in there are the kids are coaching each other on that phonics based instruction okay so I'm going to talk a little bit about our dual language program um we're really in our infancy stages of the development of our dual language program and so we have two major goals this year the first one is that our teachers who are teaching in Spanish are remaining in their target language and not doing any translation or breaking of that Spanish throughout the duration of the teaching and then the second one is really implementing some strong verbal scaffolding techniques because our goal is to have kids talking for at least 50 percent of the time and teachers talking for at least 50 of the time and so they do that through things like repeating oral response something called total physical response where kids have actions that go with the movements and then think pair share so I'm going to show you a quick video of one of our kindergarten teachers Dr Valdez it's a little bit hello I am Marcus and I'm part of the Ravens coffee because we're a project-based learning school our each month we do a project about each month we do a project about a variety of topics during our first month of school we did a project about Bo is going to have to do with the state of matter and the Living Museum and I am really excited to learn about that our next goal is in the area of social emotion we want all kids to be strong self managers and have entertain high levels of autonomy this year we really added more after school programs including Playmakers soccer volleyball scan for school and YMCA Playmakers an after-school program that keeps you active throughout the rest of the day it has group activities such as ping pong pool basketball baseball football and and many more not only does it keep us moving but we learn leadership skills like Integrity which is doing the right thing when nobody's looking we also have skate after school which is I was part of last year I learned I learned skills like helping other people when they fell and standing back up each time I fell it was tricky but I finally mastered being able to ride a skateboard we also have lots of leadership opportunities during the school day we have principal advisory committee morning announcements crew Battle of the books and Kinder leaders I just started Bible books this year because card accounted forced me but I really liked the book I'm reading for Miss Mary I love being a part of t-shirt because it teaches affect us and you have great opportunities for the future next up Hayes will talk to you about family engagement circle is around family engagement we want 90 of our families to participate at RTC activities this year this year our parents volunteered and worked with the school to plan and participate in many events both my parents are very involved my mom was the second uh the treasurer of the PTO she's always making stuff at home for example she had another PTR members made bags full of goodies to give to Our Guest teachers to welcome them when they substitute at our school um my mom also attended a meeting called like aptt when she was there she learned all about my progress in Reading in that and she received activity she could do at home opening my dad attends Community Council which is a big meeting where they said need to talk about news that and events that involved the district they're busy I told you my parents were very involved because our fourth goal is around Health wellness and safety during fire drills we all go over to the grass area which is away from the building during lockdowns our teachers put us in rooms and we hide sometimes it's kind of scary but it's good that we practice it just in case it was in a real emergency we know exactly what to do and where to go now I'm going to let Miss Cartier finish out the presentation our kids are quick Round of Applause they did a fabulous job much better than I would talking about all of the great things about TCA and of course um in real life we're never without our challenges and so I would say that our top challenges this year um has been Staffing the Arizona teacher shortage absolutely hit us hard um and we just had three teachers we are now fully stuffed exciting um but we just had three teachers enter in the past month and so our instructional coaches uh coach has been working like crazy as well as our team leads to get everybody caught up to speed but it makes it difficult um the Second Challenge and also benefit is that we added a hundred kids to our rosters this year which is so exciting we're a growing school people want to come and see us um and it was it was a challenge because they all seem to come in like in mid Late July which then added Staffing and things like that however the benefit is that we were a little bit afraid adding that many kids to a small school might kind of rock culture but I remember being up here with you last year saying we focus so strongly on community and culture and it seemed to really pay off those kids were quickly embraced into into our community our kids who had been here for a while um taught them the Creighton Academy way and we're we're a good family now um and the third challenge is the new math adoption again huge positive we're so excited that we have materials that are in Spanish and that our teachers have materials that are at a rigorous level and with any time you do something the first time you're kind of fumbling through it and figuring it out for the first time and the teachers have to really get into it and get to know it and use it as it's written and now in second semester they're able to say oh you know what I can make this piece more Hands-On I can make this piece more engaging so those are kind of our top challenges and as we look to the Future um we we are committed to our goals we will hold tight to the goals that we've already set for ourselves the main one being academics this year so we want to continue to expand our collegial coaching with our team leads really having them model lessons take teachers into other rooms coach teachers on the spot um continue at those high levels of verbal Scaffolding in both our English and our Spanish classes and really add on that element of Hands-On Interactive Learning we know we can't do everything well all at once so we take these baby steps and we're ready for those next baby steps we'll continue our commitment to the social emotional Wellness of all of our kids and when we say all we always mean all of our kids we have a tracking system for our levels of autonomy to kind of see how our kiddos are progressing through those collaborative conversations with their teachers and then we are going to continue with our family engagement we have two more aptt meetings this year we had a great turnout at the first set we'll continue to track that data and we'll make sure we add on even more of those fun events that really bring the culture and Community together so that's all from me our kiddos are ready for your questions and so am I just uh wanted to just a comment I think um you know you had talked about the The Challenge and like we bring a lot of kids in um and I've heard nothing but good things I felt like everything I've heard from staff um from parents and students has been positive and that you've been able to take this school that was a concept and an idea and started in a pandemic and and still come so far the growth has just been huge and being able to see all of those Visions really come to life and being able to refine all of that has been really amazing to watch so and the kids were amazing you guys were awesome like Jeffrey yeah um what is your current enrollment our current enrollment is uh 3 40 that's without our preschool students so probably um 352 soon to become 354 right now and what is the highest grade level this year seventh grade okay um when I visited a couple years ago is right when we were coming out of the pandemic there was I know there were noise issues um has that been remedied is it um I'll let the I'll let Miss Kennedy Miss Kennedy is joining us from Biltmore Preparatory Academy from last year and so this was her first time with an open design what are your thoughts on them please yeah I mean at first I thought the same thing like how is the noise going to be with an open learning environment but every time I'm walking through the hallways it's very quiet the kids are working and it's also nice because I came from a traditional school with you know um a door and everything and the way that the open learning environment is presented it feels very open very like flowing kids can go and they can sit in different areas so I am very impressed with the way that it has turned out um so this is I hear this from not from different all schools I guess um but we talk a lot about project um based learning but still hearing from parents there's a lot of worksheets coming home for for homework so um how does that contribute towards um project-based learning um are we trying to get away from that um thoughts on that yes thank you madam president members of the board um great question we never you know worksheets are really not something that we want to be using um in lieu of that Hands-On learning um at our school we actually don't send home homework so hopefully no parents are saying they're seeing seeing that come home however um I I would say that there's definitely we we can do better we can expand more we can do less iPads we can do less paper and more things in their hand and that's really we have a principal advisory committee with parents who advise me um once a month and then our students and they're constantly giving me feedback I mean everybody's giving me feedback but um they specifically are in place to do that and um that actually was brought up just at the last meeting you know we feel like I want to see even more Hands-On and of course we do too because that is the huge Drive of the school and so that's why it's such a huge priority coming up in second quarter um we really you know I told you last year we were laying that culture and community and then we had to lay the basics of academics in this first quarter and now we're laying that okay now what what else can we teach you because the hard part is that some of our teachers are coming in without education degrees and so to say here here's everything about classroom management and running a class and basic instructional pedagogy and also Hands-On learning they're just their brains aren't quite ready and so we coach all of our teachers at different levels and you you that's what you'll see as you walk around there are some teachers who have fully embraced an inquiry-based teaching approach and they're playing card games with their kids yet they're reading and then there are other teachers who are brand new babies and we're learning the basics but second semester um that is our huge Focus and I know you have you do have a lot of brand new teachers um and I'm I'm concerned um about curriculum with the Dual language constructionists constructionism um multi-age do you have differentiated curriculum to address these this vision of your school um because I know in the past Biltmore was working for a while without um a Spanish curriculum specifically for the Spanish Immersion that was something that um we kind of missed I think for a few years so I want to make sure that we're addressing that and that you are empowered to have the curriculum that you need and want and and how can the Board District leadership helps support your teachers um because they do have so much to learn and we want to make sure that we're following the vision of the school being a president members of the board thank you so much for the question Miss McStuff free um so first we're very grateful to our sister School Bill Moore prep for being the Front Runners on the Dual language piece of things because we don't have to fight for any of that um they did the leg work for it so we have the Dual language piece and we're just because we're in our infancy stages we really use them as a model for that with that area um when it comes to our district adopted curriculum resources we are able to use them um this past summer we saw the same problem and my instructional coach who is still working on Consulting with us 10 hours a week Samantha wrote us we sat together and we said okay we have to make this work work for multi-age because we can't try and fit this square peg in the round hole so she worked like crazy and actually created Curriculum maps based on our district Curriculum maps so that we could use some of the district resources and still be making sure that we had our goals in mind so I do feel fortunate um could we always use more curriculum resources in the future yes and saying that kind of scares me because I'm like we just are getting used to this one right so right um adding is the plan for next year to add 8th grade it is the plan if we didn't MJ would be very upset Ms Harris do you have anything I just I loved your presentation it was very unique and I loved that the kids did most of the speaking thank you students and I also want to thank you for coming back and um being able to share with us this time so thank you for coming yes thank you um I do have one question and it's on the open design how are we working with the safety part of it I know that in an open design it's kind of scary if we were to have something happen in the school what safety Protocols are we doing since we can't shut doors and make a safe space how how is that being handled at Creighton Academy yes Madam president members of the board thank you so much for the question Miss Korea doll um that's actually something that's on our family's mind it's on my mind um it's on everyone's mind and we hate that it is but it is and so um we I have been working since our school open with uh Mr Mann and Mr Wells and are some detectives in the police department and the police department we have walked campus on a number of occasions and we look and we say okay what what if all the what if scenarios um which make us feel good because we were able to together construct some pretty solid plans as far as a lockdown situation typically um in our schools we have we have situations that we would refer to as almost lock out situations there might be something going on you know pretty far from us that is not a threat to us but we just make sure our exterior doors are locked and in in that aspect everything is is perfect at the Creighton Academy and then when it comes to a lockdown situation you know everyone says what what happens if you have no doors and I can't stand up here and tell you like every single in and out um of exactly what room everyone goes to but we do practice on a regular basis um and all of our kids are definitely behind closed doors during that time um so yes and we continue to refine it Mr man's right here next to me all the time and he is walking and working with me all the time on this situation okay I appreciate that and lastly um I'm a parent at the Creighton Academy and it's a wonderful experience there I love the PTO that we have I actually have the PTO president back here and she's amazing in everything that she does and Miss Cartier props to you too for being so open and allowing you know parents and for us to be so engaged um it's funny that you said that because in in with Grecia she brings a lot of worksheets home take to take take home Tuesdays is when she brings all the stuff and now at the Creighton Academy we have seesaw going on so when that paper instructional is not going home you can actually see everything through seesaw and what they're doing and I get their worksheets all the time so even though it's not being brought home parents have access to seeing what's actually being done on the iPads and seesaw is a great way because I get to see my daughter's work so I just want to thank you guys and thank you the teachers and everybody at that school because it's amazing so I'm president I'd like to add that we have International visitors coming to the school we've had State leaders coming to the school we have local neighboring districts spying on our school because they are so envious oh yeah and that's one other thing I wanted to point out that the Arizona School Board association's Maricopa County meeting actually happened at the Creighton Academy so anywhere in Maricopa County they could have gone to any of these schools and they chose the Creighton Academy maybe I had a little bit to do with that but it was one of the schools that the state organization recognized and went there and had the meeting so when people walk out inspired and the last group that came was from Japan Australia Spain Sweden Norway England and Uvalde Texas we're so lucky we have tours all the time and the great thing is actually with our open design our kids know that they're here and they answer questions and then they keep learning so they're very used to having visitors walk around yeah thank you guys to the kids you guys did an amazing job tonight I she has a follow-up question follow-up questions the homework thing not having homework when how recent is that it's been since our Inception okay um okay I love it yeah um do you get pushback from any church best practices on it and um you know we do some some families really want homework right and then some it's I mean it depends on who you ask because some are so grateful that they may have come from a school with homework and they love that they don't have to fight that at home and the kids can be at school at school and at home at home so and I assume if they want extra resources to work on Spanish or something you there's a way for them to find that yes okay yes and how are the gardens going like the outdoor well actually um I didn't realize our PTO precedent is here so hi Nicole we're so glad you're here um she's been a great front runner in helping to get the gardens off the ground um Justin Moody Who is the his title Garden supervisor District landscape manager and he's been amazing as well as Gary hunsaker and so but but I will tell you we our Gardens needed some work to actually start planting in the garden so PTO Nicole rounded up all the PTO members I think um Miss Korea doll was out there and they were like making sure I don't know much about Garden so please forgive me um but they had to raise some lines and add some soil so that it could be watered probably so anyway it's not going quite yet because but we have a plan and we have a date that it will be going right I mean if they take constant maintenance right so thank you very much everyone thank you guys so much that brings us to item C Papago School update continuing the theme of student-led conversations we have the ongoing work at Papago School to be shared by our students and supported by some of their teachers and staff all right good evening Madam president members of the board and executive team my name is Sylvia Earl and I'm the very proud Panther principal our students staff and Community have worked so to synthesize this presentation which showcases our school through the lens of our district and our school goals okay here we go I'd like to introduce our presenters tonight we have Miss uh we have a perspective of students and staff presenting tonight I'm Miss Casey and ask your assistant principal Arthur Gonzalez student Leila Rojas Marisol Figueroa Luna Chase Glenn Catherine Rodman Jaime Cortez there you go Mr Bowman he's going to be joining us through video Miss Carol Miss Willis and Willis and Sarah Greg and we have to leave but she is here thank you for being here was Greg and Mr Washington and those who are not presenting but we're in uh in very important members of our team who helped us put this together army games and Miss Lopez right back there as well so it was a big team effort so we like uh Dr Lewis mentioned are very proud but also be careful with our our understanding of our school letter grade that we have a letter b and we're very excited about um we are also mindful though that we have some areas of growth to um as well we'd like to highlight that our students made tremendous growth last year in our first full year in person and I'd like to highlight that we earned almost all possible points in the categories of growth we had 47.78 out of 50 possible and an El proficiency growth amend growth we had 9 out of 10 points we also qualified for the 16 points in the acceleration and Readiness and we earned the maximum points which was 10 points so we really are proud of our letter grade because we know that so much of it came from our growth and that coming back after the pandemic that it was a pretty big deal but I'd also like to show you that we're not unaware of our areas of need and our proficiency so I wanted to show you this as well this graph shows grade levels where we made significant growth last year in proficiency and also informs us to continue working toward moving more students to Proficiency in all grades especially in the Middle grades here fourth and fifth grade then in math High proficiency graph shows us that all grade levels made growth last year and some grades made significant growth in proficiency rate it also tells us that we need to continue this growth path in order to move again more students to proficiency so we have taken on this shared intention that we've been saying keep going keep growing that we're not giving up just because we got the letter grade of B that we are going to keep going our efforts aren't stopping towards all of our students grow and all of our students achieve so our goals this year were to focus on social emotional learning high expectations for Learning and access diversity equity and inclusion so I'd like to welcome Miss noskey to speak about our social emotional evening our team has grown dramatically over the past few years we've been able to add an SEL teacher an advocate and a child advocate support professional as this team has grown so has our ability to reach more students and support more staff and adults with social emotional learning we have several students here tonight to talk to you about our student leadership program overseen by our Advocate Isaiah Washington and SEL teacher Venus Lopez our first student speaker is Arthur Gonzalez to speak about the Panther Way leadership is a class that allows students to become an active leader in our school Community it also taught us to follow the panther way because some kids look up to us so we have to set a good example for them the other way is to be safe be kind be respectful and be responsible Mr Washington has shown me how to follow the panther way because sometimes I can I can get off track and he talks to me about it also we help kids in different activities helping them read helping them with math and helping them with things they need help with I like working with kids and helping them because I think it's good for them to learn more one day I made a choice to help a little kid that Mr Washington was helping and I asked the little kid if he wanted to make a paper pumpkin with me and that made me feel good because Mr Washington was so proud of me and I felt good after that next up is Leila Rojas to speak about behavior supports leadership has helped me change my behaviors I'm still in progress and treating my behavior one of my teachers that I used to give attitude to I am now able to listen and communicate with the teacher I have been able to participate in the classroom because I feel more comfortable now that my teachers take their time with me the way I have been able to change my behaviors is by Mr Washington helping me and guiding me Mr Washington gave me a strategy to think before I do something I think before I speak I think before I Horse Around I have kept myself in control when people have tried to get on my nerves and it could have started a fight but I control myself and I chose to go down to the office where I felt stuff where I felt safe to talk I am now able to communicate with my teachers instead of getting frustrated right now I'm working on my behavior around students I can get a little carried away but I haven't approved myself Luna will now talk about how leadership has helped to make positive changes leadership has changed me so much one reason that it has changed me is because I did not like working I did not like working with kids I did like little kids I used to never be patient with kids now that I've been working with kids I realize that kids aren't that bad they would listen to me when I asked him to I will explain things to them and they would listen Mr Washington made me realize that little kids aren't that bad this program has helped me by being patient with little kids at first I did like little kids but ever since Mr Washington gave me a chance on leadership I've been working with kids and I will continue working with them because it's amazing lastly we had we will have Chase Glenn share about our as yeah support um when I first started this new school a little scary because I didn't have anybody to talk to and my behavior wasn't the best as I tried to make new friends most of the time when I was about to do something disruptive or destructive in the halls or anywhere else besides classmates so Washington was there to guide me in the right direction working with Mr Washington is has also helped me in all sorts of ways helping me with my not so great actions and my academic goals and how I am going to reach them I'm now on a behavior contract to go on a trip in June to Costa Rica via the student ambassadors and Mr Washington and his assistant have helped me not just become a better student but a better person overall next I'm going to talk about some of our ways that we've had high expectations for learning which is our academic goal this year so one of the things that our special Area Teachers are doing is they are hosting thematic units for throughout all of the special area classes so that students get Interactive Learning focused on the countries that are participating in the World Cup this year the World Cup is generating a lot of excitement and so the teachers wanted to capitalize on that and teach them about the different countries through music art research and then have Spang some soccer tournaments during PE and here is a small video of our sixth graders playing a Korean folk song on the xylophones foreign in December all of our students will have an opportunity to showcase all of they that they've learned through this quarter with a week-long showcase um of all of their talents um the next way we've had high expectations is through our integration of thinking maps um and here to talk about thinking maps in math is Jaime Cortez a third grader to talk about how he uses them for scholarly discussion in math class I in math class we do a lot of partner talk collaboration I like it because it helps us teach each other when we are stuck I'd like to help my friends and teach them one strategy we use for where problems is a base map it makes word problems more doable um thinking maps provide our students a vertical language K8 so they can use them in all content areas so uh the brace map is one way they're using it in math um in Middle School particularly our history and science teachers are using them to break down complex Concepts and in reading and writing our teachers and students are using them to decode text and to create excellent writing projects we also have a lot of enrichment opportunities for students this year and all those marked with a star are ones that are new this year particularly added to support the Middle grades and give them more enrichment opportunities after school we have more than ever before and we're really excited with all of the different avenues that we've been able to enrich students um next I will show a video of Mr Tanner Bowman one of our third grade teachers who is participating in several of these enrichment opportunities all right before the students hi my name is Tanner Bowman I'm a third grade teacher at papa doe some of the ways that I have supported students this year is there are three field trips with a musical instrument museum providing after-school tutoring as well as bringing an animal preserve shows through campus for third to sixth grade students I've also helped run the yearbook club with new cameras that I've gotten some donuts to choose next I would like to introduce these apparel our effective students to talk about family learning thank you hi my name is Tanner Bowman we recently had our family learning night families were each given individual data sheets customized with their students data teachers were available to answer questions and provide supplemental resources and suggestions for families to improve student learning and growth at home next I would like to introduce Jen Willis to talk about our school's access diversity equity and inclusion goals um access diversity equity and inclusion have been a really big part of our year this year and I'd like to introduce one of our teachers Miss Sarah Greg who's going to share a little bit more about some of our initiatives hi I'm Sue Gregg and this is my 13th year teaching first grade at Papago um this year I asked to join the equity committee mostly because I'm interested in being part of the name exploration conversations we are determining if our current school name upholds our district values of equity and diversity we are in a stage of gathering input from all of our stakeholders last year we gained input from students in our Middle School grades currently we are working with our middle school students and student council to relay information to our Elementary School students introduce Mr Isaiah Washington uh in addition to the work that we're already doing next week we will have the youth Equity stewardship program for our fifth grade students students will have the opportunity to participate in workshops that will help support their identity self-confidence and learning and how to create a more positive cohesive School community at this time I will turn it back to principal Earl thank you so as you can see we're very proud of what we've have done last year and what we've already started this year and we're really excited to continue forward on this path and like to open up the floor rings for additional questions or comments you have for our staff and students who are very nice thank you for having us thank you any questions or comments Jeffrey what's your current enrollment um and I just want to make a comment excellent job um leadership students um first um I really appreciate the self-reflection that you've done that's a really adult thing to do um and just focusing on working to improve your behavior is admirable and I just kudos to you guys good job I'm I'm really you make me proud okay and Miss Earl just some questions since we're going to be talking about the naming policy um up next um can you just kind of talk about how the process has been for you it seems like it has been very thorough which can be a burden I I you know but um I also think getting Community voice especially for Papago is really important um how do you feel like the policy and the process has been has it been burdensome has it been helpful to get community voice absolutely I I think I consider myself a pretty inclusive leader and I really do want to hear additional voices and it's it's easier to make decisions but I know um and be a part of that process when I know what others are thinking and and to bring those points again I'm really happy to be leading this and to be a part of this I feel honored actually and I to have brought on this uh Willis and Mr Washington on the equity team now they're taking over that part of it and so it's just been really nice to kind of spread that leadership among our school and then also to bring the student voice in the younger student where we started with just middle school with really nice to expand and try to continue that on yes it was a little challenging in my first year as principal so this year um we're trying to do it a little bit differently and also dig a Little Deeper so that we can make sure we are making the right steps but yes it would be great if the policy had some other options in there as well so thank you for considering that as well thank you um just a huge thank you students you did wonderfully um I want to just expand on what Miss mcshuffrey said I really felt in your words that you guys are showing that you're empowered to really do that deep reflection and I know I'm sure this is just a small sampling of students Mr Washington to hear their words about you um I'm sure you are but be proud of yourself and and all of the staff at Papago um because that that takes a lot of work to get to a point where students can look that Inward and and really recognize their growth and their progress um and how it impacts not just the people around them but how it impacts them for the future so that's really really powerful um and I just really great job all of you I want to Mr Washington in my school [Laughter] you have friends [Laughter] thank you students kill you I'm a teacher little kids don't do it looks hilarious um I don't have anything other thank you so much and thank you so much for the students and the families that were here today we appreciate you sharing your babies with us that brings us to my computer just good so what's up okay that brings us over to 10A proposed revisions to governing board policy FF naming facilities second reading and possible adoption I think the only tweak that we heard from you last round was that we wanted the governing board piece fitted in there and I was reviewing it actually with Ms mcshephry earlier and Hilda reminded me why it wasn't underlined Ms mcsheffrey uh because it was in the original so it remains so I I was like oh yeah that needs to be underlined but indeed it's just remaining from before okay so that's the only tweak we've made from your feedback from first read and it would be our recommendation if you're satisfied to move forward with a motion to approve I would like for us to take one more meeting and the only reason why is because giving that the community input is very important I would like the policy to reflect that but also I did reach out to asba and I have not gotten back a response well I am going to have somebody was out um during sickness so I would at least like to feel comfortable enough to get their response and then by the next meeting we can um go through the revisions that they they have as well and somehow adding that the community be be part um I think this advisory committee must must publicize the requests and input from the school and Community I think that's kind of important especially with what um Mr Earl was saying so I just would hope that we table this that we can talk about it last time one week at asba feedback and maybe include a little bit making sure that the community is always or that we a notice is given to the community and somehow that way they have an opportunity to input their opinions as well some problem so we'll add a phrase about Community input and run it by you and then you'd like a third read after you get asba yes we'll bring it back then if that's the will of the board to just table it for now well yeah it'll be brought back for the third read so I was gonna say like we're still allowed to discuss it um I agree I think the the first like two chunks that are crossed out is fine crossed out but yeah something along the lines of the paragraph for the advisory committee like I think the language in that paragraph is good and gets at that Community piece my only other piece is the sentence we brought back about the governing board I like the second half of it like I think the governing board needs to approve the final name decision I'm not really a fan of the governing board has the authority to name or rename a school like that part by itself like I don't think it should ever come just from a board if that makes sense and maybe that's just my interpretation of the sentence but to me it makes more sense to say you know the governing word like you know and it kind of goes down into the advisory committee you know has the authority to accept the recommendation and writing to name a rename like we have the final Authority but I don't and I I would like input from my fellow board members I think it's strange to be like the governing board has the authority to name a school like no that goes against the community input yeah I see what you're saying now um I think if you add the community input being a required part of the policy then you're that it's not just the governing board that can come and say we're going to change the name but it just as a border and you're contradicting like so this is me being a grammar nerd so that sentence the governing board has the authority to name a rename the school or portion of the facility that is an independent clause before the next part of or to accept recommendation so I'm saying why do we need that first part because if you're going to have parts of the policy that require Community input the board would never just create the name does that yes um do this if you are able to send an email with that that way I can reflect that and send it to asba 2 with recommendations and if you guys have them so I can kind of send all those together and see what we can come up with the final read once that read comes through I can send it over to Hilda and I'll have her share with everybody else just in case anybody else has any questions or anything and I'll make sure that gets done by then before the next meeting so we'll have two weeks to kind of toss all around the emails and just from a historical three weeks that's right we'll do it okay okay we'll do and just from a historical perspective I was just wondering why we're changing it um but there was a reason why and I just it does the whole board know why that is done why this was changed to begin with no do you have this perspective and so he didn't have a quality of that way and so um okay so this precedes an asba policy yes okay all right yeah this is why I think it's like we want the input of what does asba have Wednesday you know like is keyboard yeah they require us showing agenda items okay statutorily yeah um okay and yeah I just I mean I like I do like the community input part and I like calling out Community member student you know I don't what is a member at large if you have a Community member already like parent no principal and then staff members you know so I like calling out so that we don't exclude student voice right or a Community member that's all okay yeah so I'll go ahead and do that and I'll be in touch with you Hilda um as it starts coming around any other um comments no okay that brings us to 11a Future agenda items um Miss Jeffrey do you have any future agenda items I would like for us to add the mobile home displacement um just for us to talk about that to see if there if we could submit a letter to Mayor Gallego or what would be a good thing for us to do so I think the city council's hearing on it tomorrow so it might be too late for us to do something by next meeting um but yeah uh a resolution would have been nice or I'm gonna go over there tomorrow and kind of I can give you guys a feedback to see what happens but I think it's too late which is unfortunate but on the off chance here on it tomorrow and I think we should because that's what he was saying so yeah I think if we get together and make sure we send something to city council members and um the mayor on how this displacement is affecting your families I think that would send you know some kind of message to them but yeah because he said it's happening to all the mobile parks and just having it as an agenda item for us to discuss like as this comes up what is in our power and what okay well we can specifically also talk about the McKinney Dental component though yeah that one that one doesn't kick in until they're actually displaced though right there's nothing yeah I figured so we're just trying to figure out how to keep them in our schools yeah but sorry I I she's like she's giving me the stop talking about it then okay it's not on the agenda but to add it thank you perfect um Miss McCaleb any other future agenda items okay no and none from me either so that brings us to our last I move the governing board adjourn not those in favor Miss Ayers myself I'm perfect thank you guys have a great night

thanks so much [Applause] and um on behalf of the board yeah well so the the board is well aware of how much I I mentioned cajole torture applaud or even talk about like all of the things that I see with the music program particular part of it as Riley said for about nine years now I have seen the kids kind of grow change mature I mean if you want to just look at it there's like a subset of kids and and Riley was a part of it where they get to start in eighth grade and that is uh near as I'm aware of a hundred percent unique that I'm aware of from any other marching program that I've talked to on many many other bands that we go and we talk to as we're all hanging out as parents um and and just watching kids that are kind of at that level of maturity step into a program where there's people that have been playing for four plus years potentially know how to March and this year in particular was a vast majority of brand new Marchers and so that begins not only to talk about the teacher leaders of just the three or four of them that are here plus all the other student leaders that were behind them that helped organize that group and bring them into really a culmination for not only them but for everybody else that was there so I I as a guest speaking for the board today applaud you guys and thank you for all your hard work and I know that it will serve you well for the rest of your years and so please keep doing what you love because as they say they say it's not work then so just keep at it thank you [Applause] okay uh the next item on our agenda is public comments or would like further to further engage with the district you can submit your questions using the link on the website and the appropriate staff member will communicate with you I'm going to turn it over to Holly beachman our Communications manager who's going to explain the procedures we use thank you president Dremel speakers will be called up in order of form submission the first form received is the first person invited to speak when your name is called please come to the podium so that you can be heard all individuals speaking will be limited to three minutes as we have a timer here that will start once you are settled at the podium at any time during this meeting written comments may be submitted to our recording secretary Cindy Rodriguez at my right speakers should conduct themselves with Civility and respect towards others hand our speaker is Amber dress up all right I thought it was getting five but I'm getting three so I'm going to cram it in amberjersa English teacher Community member this is month 19 of trying to get our district to truly prioritize equity and make it the foundation of the decisions we make so I want to talk about accountability in the summer of 2020 our senior leadership sent out an email discussing the need to make Dei a priority here's an excerpt as a leader in BPS 101 I have to do better we have been entrusted with educating our students about racism and all social injustices we need to figure out the education Lane and we need to do it now how will we educate ourselves and how will we educate our students differently how will we remove barriers from our system one of the ways I will learn is by listening I need to hear from you I need to hear from students and their parents I do not want to go back to school with a checklist of ways that we are addressing Equity like it is some State requirement we are better than that yet we'll end quote two and a half years later we are not fulfilling what our senior leadership said that they would do the email said to be courageous and share your Reflections I tried I was courageous to ask for help when traumatized by a racial incident at my work but I'm still waiting on racial resources two months later racial traumatic resources how is this removing the barriers that we said we would um as you may know my name was mentioned publicly at a board meeting a couple months back and I tried to be courageous and bring this up with senior leadership um I never received an apology for what happened because others felt that I did not deserve an apology no one has the right to speak for my feelings and determine if they're valid whether someone else thinks I was offended or not I deserve the respect and human decency of having my feelings acknowledged just like we all do in the 2020 email it said we would educate our students differently in terms of equity we have not done that the email in 2020 said our senior leadership wants to listen to students staff and the community I've emailed our board and explained my thoughts on our lack of Integrity with Equity work I've also mentioned how frustrating it is to be a teacher of color in this District where decisions are constantly made for you um unfortunately no response um or I must attend meeting after meeting where I'm giving email expectations and protocols that no other employees have to follow we also have an equity committee and we just uh figured out our purpose statement and we've been around for six months how is this helping our students as promised in our 2020 email we did not acknowledge Martin Luther King Jr Day hesperic Heritage Month Native American month none of that so how are we doing what the email said we would do by making slow so slow strides we're saying that we are status quo and I am not okay with that brene brown defines courage as showing up and letting yourself be seen despite the risk so I ask all of our leaders how have you been courageous for oppressed groups lately and if you cannot answer this maybe it's time to hold yourself accountable thank you all right next person I would like to invite is Todd Swanson good evening first off I would like to thank the members of the board and administration who came to our Bea trivia night our annual scholarship fundraiser raised three thousand dollars which will be awarded to uh two graduating seniors one going into the field of education and one going into a career in the technical trades it was a really fun night and again on behalf of the Bea thank you for those of you that came to be a part of our event and if you didn't come this year maybe you can come next year as I come before you tonight I thought it would be a great idea to check back one year ago and re-read what I had written as my comments to the board from November 16 2021.

two twenty twenty two exactly so that we know that if the Freshman over there was performing at a 75 level and now let's say they're at a 68. what does OTL need to do okay to bring that up to where we were before the pandemic and our goal the seven of us is to make that number even better we all know that right graduation rates we want to be at as you asked 100 percent and we're at 91. so we always want the numbers we always wanted I think Mr Brown said it best before he leaves the board his idea is to make the achievement Gap and certain things better and I think that's all of our goals but we just can't figure out what tools we need to give OTL and the staff if we don't know where we stand if the ninth grader in 2019 is performing at this level what is today's ninth grader performing at that's the question so here is where that might not be the best measure because ninth grade compared to ninth grade to a ninth grader that that could vary so much but if you compare the growth of what would that have been a sixth grader to a ninth grader so in sixth grade were they on this trajectory and are did they meet that trajectory in ninth grade so that's what I would think you would want to see versus a ninth grader versus well I want to know that in 2019 if a ninth grader was reading and testing at a ninth grade level but today's freshman take what are they reading it and what are they testing it if it's two years behind then that's what we have to fix and I do want to I want to know if we lost a fifth grader did we get that fifth grader back and is on that is that fifth grader on the right trajectory that's exactly what I'm asking for is what happened to those kids that we kept saying we were losing did we get them back are they where they belong today what are we doing if they're not what do we need to do to help them get to that I mean we don't we just kept saying we're losing these kids and they're way behind and we're way behind hello where are we I understand I was just trying to want to understand what you wanted to compare but two trying to get you to see that maybe it's better to look at if we want to see that where where that we're behind because that same group of ninth graders today could have been above or behind either way I mean but if you look at where they came from to where they are and then we say okay this sixth grader was on a trajectory to be on Pace now they're in ninth grade and they're behind now what do we need to do versus taking this ninth grader compared to a ninth grader from 2019.

which was a ten thousand dollar Grant and we decide to up it okay all right okay sorry his last last minute last night Nancy because Dan just said after that yeah and maybe I'll let Dan talk but why don't you go ahead so yesterday uh I grew out in Rose gang to do an assessment with a thumbs up leagues for the multiplies that we just find the awesome interviews and questions which they'll meet with me on Friday morning to go over to the areas of questions and how to get those right so can I ask a question so I was in the building like a week or two ago and there was a week it was a good day all right so it was that was dashed or what is were they able to do something about that or okay well it's like it's consistently so they put a patch all right it's just you got the metal rules yeah it was very difficult materials it's very old you have to go out I don't know as fast as time but I did get the bush game you know so he's going to show me the report okay all right awesome thank you so I guess if the roof is being addressed now does that have been part of the facilities and study them well the students instead of coming to all types of yourself but you are actively working to get the leagues fixed and that's really important because this is day one I've got up to myself so moving forward if there's a leak the school should just notify you and you'll come and put it back yeah yeah because it's supposed to downpour again tomorrow it's that should be fun thank you Jeff uh District um I'm going to give you some history on this um it was when I came in in 2018 January 2018 first thing we did was put it in place a quality improvement and um based on significant progress on it and so last year we decided when we looked at that we looked at it every year it had become very fragmented but mostly because get done and then also with mine you know kind of my retirement at the end of this year and when it was a school committee we thought it would be a good idea to take the five-minute improvements and take some of the things that were left over that we really thought would worthwhile and then incorporate those into a three-year transitional District Improvement plans and that also can just becomes superintendent accounts but it's much in a way that the incoming super Talent is already here so um you know that was really done a great job of taking the lead on this so there's also the first district include that did happen on the last one that these School committees had some oh had a lot of it so so if you see some doesn't make sense they probably did yeah um no just kidding you know we asked them that our partners we ask them to take on the shipment also so um and they they certainly did the other thing I want to talk about here before I turn it over is the the biggest cost we always have in the district aside from a new movement like that this person salary is always the biggest item on a budget this plant is heavy and personality and then there really is a reason for this and so you often hear the shortage of teachers and there's a shortage of teachers it's true you have to ask yourself why is that happen and that shows you've Educators well the company the minor reason is that a lot of old goats like myself decided to retire and they'll teachers in the classroom or in in the classroom doing code we decided it's you know they're not going to do the extra heritage but the real reason is a shortage of teachers is because of early on in the pandemic the the most rewind the people believe the assessment companies believe that the way to dig our way out of this to get my students back was to bring them bring them when they came back to school to do do some assessments to see what they should do and then build the Gap but that was when we thought we'd be out for two months three months that's changed and they're thinking on how we're going to get our students back to where they should be nationally is changed the thought now isn't that we have to invest in Personnel especially support people to help our teachers to help our students and that's the real reason we're not producing less teachers we're producing just as many teachers as we produce before we've also seen a lot of movement teachers that you know I prefers before what was going on there what's in uh you know like this we're losing a lot of teachers I can remind you of that many of the teachers we hire the vast majority came from others they came from some place so everybody it's like you know it's like a musical chairs right now so there is a shortage teacher because everybody's trying to add additional steps um and they're all willing to make the investment so we hope we know this is heavy in personnel and so we hold a lot of times when we believe they will we'll um will accept that idea and be wanted to make the investment in love personnel so with that I'm going to turn this over to Cal who as I said had LED this whole Mission plan so Cal Berlin Boylston Regional School District we're celebrating our fourth year as one United school district four years that's relatively Young we've been around a long time but four years all together one District we have plenty of potential to change these very positive ways yet we still are experiencing some growing remains it isn't easy to blend three separate schools separate cultures and Two Towns together into one vision for the future however that's what you plan to do and the purpose of this District by working with a single vision in mind we create a stronger more responsive and more United school district collectively and constantly we ask ourselves these essential questions who are we what do we want for our future for our children and why is it important this work that we're doing our district Improvement plan outlines both the needs in all of our schools and at each of our levels from elementary to Middle High School we want to be able to give our students an educational experience that broadens their knowledge and prepares them for their future including college and careers and also including the trades we want to be able to create engaging learning environments open to exploration critical thinking and problem solving we want to ensure that our schools are physically emotionally and socially safe spaces to learn and grow as individuals and within this microcosm of the larger society and finally we want to welcome new families who have chosen to live in our two communities and carry on the roles and responsibilities of good citizenship and stewardship of our land as others who have lived here for generations and their families tonight we're going to be looking at four objectives major objectives and the first is personnel the second is teaching and learning technology and then finance and budget as we go through each of the sections I'll introduce that section by going further into the full objective of each of those areas foreign [Music] to keep an open mind as you listen to our principals directors and myself identify our goals and action steps I want to take moment to introduce the team here that we'll be presenting this evening you know Fitzpatrick Dan Ayala Nancy Kaminski Cara Ford Sally stuckles John Marie Ells Paul Mara of course over on the computer here helping me out with Jonathan each of these individuals is not just an administrator in our district but they have invested their time and their hearts into looking at this plan with me with Jeff and going over it and carefully thinking about what they want to tell you tonight about why each one of these these objectives and what's in them that content that important content is important to all of us I hope you will consider again as I said before keeping an open mind recognizing that what we're going to talk about tonight are not our wants there are needs in this District and to be thinking about how we're going to be going forward in the next three years to make a difference we're going to start now with our plan I think all of you have a chance to do together this weekend hopefully I'm going to start with the first one now in our personal objective appropriate Staffing in each of our three schools for the purpose of insurance student safety providing quality of instruction meaning social emotional needs and to advance the opportunities for students to participate in innovative coursework Dr John Wayne so I am here to think about personnel for Boylston and many of the items that we have listed in this school of the district Improvement plan are allocated to different variants that we feel that staff would be increased and decreased and helpful so the first area we talk about kindergarten classrooms and adding a paraprofessionals to kindergarten classes this is crucial for us at that early education level we need to be able to be in an engaging learning environment and Carol talked about that earlier in order to do that we have to have enough Staffing because those small children five-year-olds need more people to be able to manage them in those learning environments additionally there are uh classroom teachers that we have listed this is a little bit different for both um Berlin and for where we are in Williston and Boylston we are asking for two classroom teachers and I want to just speak to this for a moment that one of the things that we've had happen in Boylston is that fluctuating class size and our teachers move from one grade level to another and what that does is it provides some inconsistencies for educators to become experts on the subject area and the curriculum so one way that we can add rigor to what we do with students each day in the curriculum is to have their additional staff so that we can provide three grade level classrooms per grade three teachers per grade and that adds to consistency it adds us it adds to that ability to have rigor in the curriculum and teachers become experts at the grade level that they're teaching rather than having to flock back and which is really difficult to do additionally at Bes and BMS we have on here adjustment counselors we also heard Carol speak to the social emotional aspect of what we do every single day in the elementary school and so that additional person would be someone who can support those needs of our students and as you can would anticipate that has increased significantly through coven we also have health teacher at Bes and fems and that provides necessary education to our students regarding those social emotional needs but also physical needs and then just the overall health of our students and educating them so that when we move on to Contra they have all of those things a base for all the things that they've learned now the last part is an additional General aid for Bes Bes has seen an increased a 12 increase in students over the last year and in that comes more kids more kids equals some more more things to tackle and so we have on here a general recess and lunch Aid because we think that is very important to appropriately supervise all of the students in those environments bacteria and outside of recess and that would be able to be taken care of by that additional points succession are there any questions in each class or so that particular line that's a great question thank you the particular line there is to support special education students so we have special education students currently supportive we have 15 paraprofessionals at Bes right now and so that would be an additional thank you okay so as for tejanto um like to have additional teaching staff in the areas of mathematics PLA and science which comes from the fact that they can allow for small classifieds for more sections and levels of core courses offered and also more elective opportunities especially with our desire to expand our stem offerings and also for courses Associated personal clients and in reference to the goal 1.10 in regards thank you guys next time sure um yes uh one so 1.9 I'm sorry yes 1.9 um our plan is to expand the ell or the English language learner programming that's a Honda Accord that is a shared role of humanities have English language Learners and the English language learner population has been growing in the district it is programming um in the district it's about 27.

our president before uh we let Mr Lee and Cruz may say absolutely just want to say on behalf of uh cabinet um everything that has been uh said today but I I wanna I wanna I want to just make it loud and clear that um shieldoning Cruz Gonzalez's impact in Azusa goes beyond Azusa um it is uh her presence is felt across the state um not only in her decisions but her work uh her advocacy her uh Relentless um championing of what is right for students um obviously right she's here in our home Azusa but the Ripple effects are real uh and the Ripple effects uh go extremely Broad and so uh we just wanted to say thank you uh thank you for being um such an amazing board member such an amazing partner and just on behalf of the kids and the uh and and hear the district uh we just want to thank you and congratulate you and then of course you know you certainly would love to give you a moment chilling to share thank you um and I I didn't prepare anything because I really didn't want to speak for very long but um I do first want to just acknowledge and thank my family for being here I have my parents Victoria Victor my grandmother Caroline Cruz my my cousin's Adrian Joaquin and Roger are all here um uh she was just a grad or two as a unified grad um and my my aunt my Deandrea my sister um and then of course my family my husband Tony and I said who's back there with his friend um it's dual immersion friends yes um and so I I also want to just recognize you know I don't think I would have run for school board 26 if I didn't have the pathway um except for me with my grandfather because am I yeah sitting as the mayor at the time right I think when I thought about wanting to change um that I saw that I saw them I saw the mentors I saw the um the examples and that's where my mind went right so I think I have to really acknowledge the fact that that existed for me to be here I will also just say um my dad told the story about me running I actually that Friday after I pulled the papers I actually planned on not running but it's when the tribute announced on the Sunday newspaper wrote everyone who was wild and my cousin my cousin Roger called me up he's like you're running for school board I was like that's it I have to run now my name's not right so because I have fully intended I'm not doing it so it was sort of by accident that I ended up having that I ended up um but I you know I just want to say two things and one is um I never thought I would serve this long I thought oh yeah I'll get in there you know I'm always focused on my outcomes right so I was like 12 years I'll run a couple times and then I'll move on right schools change so slowly incredibly slowly um and so you know I I I still I can't I can't honestly say like oh yeah we are we are where I would want us to be right but I think I've done my part um um I think I've helped push this District um to be a better place um and more importantly there are so many strong things in place there's so much strong leadership on our board aboard you know we have a board who understands the importance of equity and the importance of ensuring that every single of our students has a has the ability to succeed and Thrive right not just educationally but as a whole child um and so I feel really good about stepping down and moving on and moving on to something local like Cub Scouts instead of school board um because I know I know that the district is in good hands with my fellow Boardman and with the leadership that we have in our schools and the and the teachers that we have in our class every every every teacher that my son has had so far has been excellent excellent and it's just amazing what they're learning and so um I you know I I feel good about that I feel good about where I'm leaving and I think what's important for leadership is not what you've done right but what happens after you leave but I really look forward to seeing what happened right throughout the years by the time my son graduates from gets into high school and is part of the IB Program um and uh graduates from high school to see where our schools are in in the next 10 years um someone asked if I'm going to watch board school board meetings I said no I am not going to watch the board meetings um so I but but I'm sure you guys are going to have fun with those board meetings and it makes some really great decisions um and so I I'll leave it at there and say just thank you so much I appreciate the support of the community I so appreciated um representing the community and really asking for more for Market from our agents from our school district from from the people that serve our community um and um it's just been I don't know know it's been very fulfilling and I and I um but I'm also happy to let it let somebody else take that first oh thank you yeah and so let's get a picture with my family so my family would come up and I also wanted to just recognize all my friends in the audience my my parent friends my my fellow elected officials who came I just really appreciate all of you coming and supporting me foreign and now this brings us to 4.2 recognition of Adrian Greer for service as education president of Azusa Unified School District this first so um I want to thank Adrian for taking this whole year as being where president he did such a fabulous job you know he he's he's very young you see that and you know we've become word president and he was willing to do a great job and I really appreciate his sentiment I appreciate the way he handled situations we went to some tough situations and he always stood his ground and that's what president is he ran meetings very not smoothly we just talked about you know our word readings are not until 10 30 at night he's really managed to work with the superintendent and have our board meetings run smoothly and that's his job and he did a fantastic job at that and I'm very proud of him it means such a nice young man and really doing a fine job I really appreciate it because I have been here 11 years and I've seen different there's people have different styles when they run when you become the word president and he has a smooth look at him slick Style I mean he may be yelling at you he may be mad and you didn't even know it but I know him so I look at him and I can't lift him because I wonder last and he looks at me and we're like okay Adrian but I'm very very proud of him um for for getting us through this very tough year that we all have to go through so I have a um I thought the gavel came off but it doesn't um a very nice clock here presented to Adrian Greer in appreciation for your dedication and Service as a board president as a zenified School District board uh December 14 2021 November 30th 2022.

2022-11-16 Kane County, IL YouTube / BPS Communications transcript source: youtube Batavia Public School District 101 Board of Education Meetin… · passage 4
I wanted to get a sense of what our world and BPS was like 12 months ago and compare it to life today what I discovered is that many of the same topics from last year are still the same ones we're talking about this year Dei Equity teacher burnout and fatigue these were all key points of my address last year and are still at the Forefront of my comments this year as well 12 months later there is however a stark contrast from now to where we were a year ago regarding these topics last year when talking about all these things there was no real plan of how the district and staff would move forward together in addressing and resolving these issues there was almost a feeling of spinning our proverbial Wheels around the same topics over and over and getting no forward momentum that is where this year differs somewhat from last year over the last six weeks there has been a change there has not only been an acknowledgment of some of the struggles that have been and are still going on in our district there is a new piece to the story that didn't exist last year and that piece is a shared commitment by the board and Senior Management and the Bea to do the work that is necessary to begin to not only address the issues before Japan forward and trying to regain what we once had in terms of trust communication and collaboration as of now that forward motion has really only been seen by a few people mainly Senior Management the board President and Vice President and the Bea officers and I fully recognize that until there are concrete instances that prove what we are talking about and they begin to take shape it will really be hard for those not involved in those conversations to see any real tangible change or even think that there is anything happening to address these issues that will take time effort and most importantly results results that people can not only see but feel as well and just because it is a long and hard road to follow and that results may not be quickly seen that doesn't mean that the efforts are not already underway to work towards a more productive end I liken this to a seed a seed is planted underground from above no one would really see that anything is happening to that seed while it's underground however given the right resources like water nutrients and fertile soil to grow in that seed will Sprout roots those roots would become the anchor for the plant that will help it withstand storms drought and attacks from those that want to destroy the plant with a strong root system of support that emerging plant will bust through the ground and only then will it be visible to those who never saw any of those supports that were happening underground to make this new growth possible at this point the plant is merely a tiny small shoot in no way is it tall enough or sturdy enough to Bear any fruit or provide shade but no future benefits from this plant can happen without that tiny shoot appearing first right now we are at that seed stage of the underground development of this process so I completely understand if there are those who feel like nothing is being done or conditions aren't changing and for right now it still really does feel that way too many in our district however I stand before you tonight telling you we are working on getting the conditions and the resources right for this seed a seed will fail to grow in Weak soil or without the proper nutrients and we are now in the process of amending our soil so that any future seeds that we plant as a district will have a chance to not only grow but to flourish and for those plants that are already established in that soil that they will become healthier and more productive are things perfect now absolutely not are things getting better in some areas yes others maybe and yet others not at all but trust communication and collaboration have been thrust to the Forefront of the work that must be done to get our district back on track as a Thanksgiving holiday comes to us next week I decided to steal some lines that I said to you all last year as they still hold very true today to the board I thank you for your time outside of the regular roles you serve daily this job comes with the ability to be a sounding board to anyone that reaches out to you thank you for listening and seeking out answers and clarification and by the way I found out today is Happy School Board appreciation day so happy School appreciation today uh to BPS Administration I know what I go through to make my classroom function every day I cannot imagine everything that entails to make a building or a faction of our district function on a daily basis thank you for your time and efforts to The District staff Educators Perez secretaries nurses lunch supervisors campus monitors custodians those of you on the front lines every single day just thank you among the things I am most grateful for each year is a school family that supports me and lifts me up every day your work does not go unnoticed by me even though I don't always take the time to acknowledge the great things that you all do so again thank you all and with that I would normally close by wishing you all a Happy Thanksgiving and I do wish that however I am asking us all to remember that not everyone will be going home next week to a grand feast or be able to spend time with their family for some there is no Happy Thanksgiving I hope that we are all able to recognize that fact and with the resources that we have help to make somebody else's holiday a bit brighter and happier so with that I wish you all peace and time next week to reflect on the blessings that we all have thank you thanks Patrick and update on what they've been doing great um as far as updates go for the Batavia High School the high school football team had a great win last Saturday and are proceeding on to playoffs and 42nd 42nd Street did an amazing job with their show and they had some crazy tap dancing so it they had a really amazing show there um both 8th graders with uh seniors have the screen the screenshots websites to help them through their Transitions and we also have Batavia High School winter sports showing up such as wrestling girls and boys basketball swimming and dance and then we just wanted to say a big problem for all that you do and helping our school district become better every day so thank you and happy board appreciation day thank you blossom all right we'll start with committee updates we'll start with Aaron descent oh okay so um this past Saturday Big Met um and for those of you who don't know what Vic is a meeting of the minds for all of the different booster organizations within the Batavia um School District so you'll have ptos as well as the booster organizations like music Buffs and Stage for example and we usually have a district-wide topic to discuss and like I said before kind of a meeting of the minds and idea sharing so it's always one of my favorite meetings to attend and we meet um about quarterly so that was last Saturday we also continue on with our superintendent search we will be discussing as a group of knights and on November 3rd the equity team met as well um with our uh consultant Dr leeks we finalized our purpose um which was to evaluate and establish a framework to provide a safe inclusive anti-bigated environment and advocate for Equitable systems and policies in order to serve all stakeholders and the community students families and staff and then we decided that in December the team will finalize immediate action steps and reflect on the meeting schedule to ensure all of our actions can be completed that's all I have tonight awesome thanks Aaron RJ uh Stephanie did not meet this past month but we are going to meet in December so I'll report at the next meeting awesome thanks RJ Craig we have not met yet but we will be soon okay next month uh cacted me I've got the um official share out here uh the committee discussed and reviewed the focus of our work for the school year as the re-established subject to area leadership teams begin in the next month uh looking to continue creating systems of support for communication collaboration and feedback the committee reviewed the applications for membership for the salt teams developed a plan for additional recruitment plans and member notification as well as adjusting timelines for caca and salt meetings in the next few months and finally we reviewed needs related to the trimester Reflections at the elementary level and the alignment with portrait of a graduate and principals will deliver a cohesive message that gives permission to teachers to do the best they can with the current version of the uh tr's portrait of a graduate page example teachers can complete this whole group they can give guidance not get caught up in making sure every box is perfectly checked um and then we're um this is important they're seeking information about tax authority to create an elementary trimester reflection for salt so a lot of good work it seems um excitingly collaborative and um they seem to have a renewed focus and excitement about their work so it was a real joy to sit in on that committee Sue Insurance committee met uh November 10th I have three things to report back progress on the healthgram implementation and open enrollment is progressing well I will note that it's been identified that a couple local Health Providers are not network not in a network that is impacting a small percentage of employees but the committee in healthgram is taking this seriously and arrangements are being made to make sure that everything is covered uh also it should be known that the goal of the community is to continue to provide high quality benefits and low member costs the board should be aware that the current plan is going to save District employees approximately six hundred thousand dollars in The District 3 million annually due to plan improvements and incentives and finally for Next Step the committee is reviewing its performance from the past few years and will begin updating goals and objectives soon thanks young exciting work Chris um rack meets on Thursday so we did not meet this past month um other than that I did meet with Joanne earlier this month to let them know that I am the BHS board rep so if there's anything that I can do to help amplify voices at the high school let me know um with one vote all of the details on the consent agenda are in the board book and so Mr Pierce you can take us through that absolutely 5.1 and 5.2 are the approval of the October 25th 2022 meeting and closed session minutes 5.3 is our monthly Personnel report uh 5.4 is our monthly payroll and bills 5.5 is the destruction of our closed session recordings from May 25th 2021 5.6 is our donations and uh we're thankful the Batavia Walmart for donating 1600 for student school supplies 5.7 is our calendar for 20 uh 23 24 and 5 point is is to authorize the application for the school maintenance project Grant finally 5.9 is the approval of the consent agenda all right are there any items for removal or clarification all right then I would entertain a motion to approve the consent agenda as presented moved by Meister second by lock all in favor any opposed all right next item on our agenda is reports I'll hand that over to Dr Hitchens the first two are the foia requests that we're required to show you every month and the treasures report so nothing to vote on but I would entertain any questions about either of those but since they do appear every month you usually don't have a whole lot of questions and then the next report is for there we go I was like I was looking like where is the public hearing I'm apparently blind tonight all right we are required to have a public hearing tonight so at this time we will open our truth in taxation hearing regarding the 2022 tax levy we will begin the hearing with the brief presentation from Chief Financial Officer Tony and glacie about the levy and after his presentation we'll hear any public comment regarding the levy so we are not generally accustomed to holding this truth and Taxation hearing it's been quite some time since we've held the last one the reason being is that we haven't levied more than um five percent in the preceding year and so given that CPI has been seven percent in the prior year we expect to Levy more than five percent because to capture the full amount we're Limited in terms of the tax tax cap to that five percent um with the exception of new construction so we anticipate levying as a matter of fact um 78.4 million dollars which represents an increase of 5.9 percent over the preceding year although we don't anticipate collecting that amount we will probably collect something around 78.2 million which would be an increase of about 5.6 percent again this represents inflation so to put it in perspective for the average taxpayer if you're at the beginning of 2020 your your home was valued at 350 000 market value and it appreciated at the same rate as did eav in the district which was um uh 6.8 percent your home value would be about three hundred seventy three thousand dollars on the new market value and uh the tax increase would be about 308 dollars over the prior year or 4.6 percent more than the prior year and for the schools that would be just under seven thousand dollars at six thousand nine hundred fifty six dollars so um that or the mechanics of what is happening under the the levy the reason again why we have to do this truth in taxation hearing is because we're levying more than five percent which we typically do the reason why we are and this year is to capture the amount that we're entitled to under the tax cap plus new construction as I have already stated we also as one relatively new requirement for truth and Taxation hearings is Reserve balances that the district has on hand although the interpretation of what that means exactly in the law is a bit unclear and so in speaking with my colleagues we're simply stating what our cash balances are our fund balances are as of October 31st which for Batavia is some 77 million dollars so um that is available in the treasurer's record report I will state however that given the conversations that we've had in the community about the recent referendum folks think that 77 million dollars is a lot of money to have on hand and indeed it is in fact that's an increase of from 50 million dollars that fiscal year end of last year so at the beginning of this fiscal year we had about 55 million dollars in fund balances on hand um but I would remind the public and I know the board is well aware of this that we just recently have attained a fiscal Health reasonable enough where we do not have to issue what are called tax anticipation warrants so we get our infusions our Revenue since we're so heavily reliant on property taxes those come in June and September and in September of each year so we basically get paid twice a year to put it in kind of a homeowner's parlance you know in terms of like being paid by your by your employer and our bills carry out throughout the year and until about three years ago we used to have to borrow money through like a payday loan so that we can pay all of our bills and while 77 million dollars sounds like a heck of a lot of money we'll spend almost all of it by the time we get to March April and May and in years past we would literally have to borrow money so that we could pay our payrolls and bills before the next infusion of cash came and so when we get to the bottom of that cash flow cycle as we call it we'll probably be somewhere around 15 to 20 million dollars of cash on hand so that's 77 million dollars will largely have been spent but it will go back up rapidly and it will make an appearance that we'll have more cash on fiscal you're in so it's a it's a bit of an illusion so I just want to make sure that folks understand it's not like we're sitting on a ton of cash and can make things happen so um beyond that I'd be happy to entertain any questions that the board may have before we offer the community an opportunity to ask questions or address the board no question all right thanks Tony is there anyone here in the audience who'd like to comment on the 2022 lovey okay then that concludes Our Truth in taxation hearing regarding the 2022 Levy action on the levy will take place at the December board meeting all right all right the next agenda item is also a report no uh action but we wanted to as a board celebrating board member appreciation day you have been working really hard on your board agreements we last month changed them to protocols um a little bit more appropriate and you talked about sharing them publicly so we put some finishing touches on them last week but or last month but we know that this is an ongoing dialogue and so you asked me to keep putting it on the agenda so you can continue to have these conversations and there's no formal vote on the protocol so if you have anything you want to change we can continue to revise them to meet your needs so the protocols are they Encompass quite a bit but it talks about how you operate together how do you communicate with the public and how do you handle concerns from the community and staff and then I'll just turn it over to you guys but I one thing that you could tell me is where you would like this to be housed it is public this was in the meeting tonight but is there would you like me to also put it on your web page or yeah I would think so I don't know another one on the webpage please that's easy um let's talk about we continue to refine this so is there are there any refinements that you want to talk about today is can you kind of give a really brief summary of what you updated between last board meeting and now yes we've changed it to protocols from agreements because agreements really acknowledge it would mean that you voted on them and agreed to them but when new board members come on they haven't agreed to them so these are just our they're the word protocol is what we agreed to call them and then the other thing is we added a section at the bottom called accountability um so the document explains um you know how you work together how you speak with one voice how you handle concerns but then what happens if the board members aren't following these protocols there really isn't um you know any way to the board's job is to hold each other accountable so you don't have a boss your boss is the community and they chime in once every four years but um so in the meantime during those four years you would hold each other accountable to these protocols so somebody suggested that we add a section on accountability and that would be you all agree that this is how we operate and you should reflect on your own um job and then the next one is if a board member does violate a protocol then it's up to you to correct each other and then you know self-reflect and then the full board if if it happens repeatedly then the full board would say okay how can we correct this moving forward is it more training is it you know more discussions we call a special meeting so that would be that other piece of accountability so that's what you would consider maybe corrective action there's two things one that I had comments on one there's a statement in there that says that it's the responsibility of a for fellow board member that implies there's one specific I would just actually say the responsibility of fellow board members the responsibility is shared by all right but it can be raised by one right that's fine as opposed to implying that there is a kind of a watch person associated with that yeah yeah good point and then second of the uh the corrective action if a board member repeatedly violates the protocol I would like to just I'm not saying actually change other than that one thing I'm not saying change this I think that maybe we should bounce it off of our legal counsel or someone else just to so we understand what corrective actions we can potentially do and what are within our capabilities of doing associated with that if there is something very little besides training and conversation training conversation right and and and and maybe that maybe I'm interpreting the corrective board action being on the one member I think would you like like to say like above here we talk about communication for example if it's a classroom talk to the teacher would you want to add sort of like for example no further training or so that anybody reading it would understand what I would probably do is the thing on the bottom if I'm going to Wordsmith it one more time is the full board should consider corrective action if the protocol is repeatedly violated oh guys one or all it doesn't matter okay and then the corrective action if any is scalable to whatever that fraction may be full board should consider corrective action if the report if board Protocols are repeatedly violated that make sense I love the section I think it's great I think we need it yeah what was this called before board member agreements agreements right but we wanted to get rid of the word agreement because it implies that there's a vote but when new board members come out but then the First full point says board members agree goodbye at these protocols it just seems I don't know it feels like it's the same thing in a different area so just board member I could take out the word agree there no problem or it's expected that board members abide by the protocols I that'd be fine something along that way we're not agreeing to anything I'd be fine it was called agreements in the first place I would agree but I think there is some Merit that if there's a new election and someone has not had a chance to come in and voice their opinion right it's hard to assume they're agreeing to it these are protocols these are expectations but we have enough the protocol is that you agree to it pretty much yeah the agreements okay like any other protocol you don't you're not asked to be in agreement it's just your expectation and then if you don't like it you have an opportunity to go in and raise the point to discuss it with others fair enough to change it okay any other comments so something else that I wanted to bring up um when I was engaging in the self-reflection about this section um I was wondering how are board training ties into this and I think that we should give ourselves the reminder that we have received a lot of training on many different issues and sometimes if something comes up perhaps we need to acknowledge the fact that hey we've had training on this however we may not be actually utilizing that training in the decisions that we make and so in in regards of that self-reflection I think that we need to recognize that training we've received as part of that self-reflection so I don't know what that looks like but I think it would be important to give us the opportunity to re-engage in training that we've received in the past if that training is not necessarily um being exhibited in the decisions we make if I mean wouldn't that be part of uh when we're discussing you know corrective action or holding each other accountable that might be one of the tools we use to reinforce those more positive behaviors or absolutely what requirement is there to play RJ several that's an advocate for a minute what requirement is there for any board member to adhere to anything they've learned I mean like that's the reality of being a board member is that there's full autonomy to be whatever board member that you believe you should be given whatever I think what I think we've lived through that so I guess the question is if taking the training to heart and utilizing it in our everyday decision making is optional then is it necessary to even engage in the training in the first place training has the potential of amending one's processes and opinions and opening their eyes to other thoughts and opinions so I don't see it as you take a train you're suddenly corrected about your behavior right you're still an autonomous human being you still need to make your own decisions and and things are going to change over time the training we receive now may be different from the training we get in a year because people are going to find out things that are better to train us on and and help us understand so I think there's I think there's some Nuance in here that if we feel as a group or even at someone as an individual calls it out and says you're not doing some of these things because I think the training informed the protocols to a certain extent and therefore if you're not abiding by the protocols you're clearly not kind of taking out of the training what we have said is important to be to to live to I I'm having a hard time understanding where it would fit and its efficacy if it was there so I'm trying to think of how to phrase this in a way that is non-specific and strategic um if we receive training on a specific subject and then later that subject turns out to be Amplified in the community and it turns out that um community members are unhappy with the way that we are dealing things and we have received training on that topic I would say that it would be advantageous to revisit that training under those circumstances because of the pressure that we're receiving them from the community because they're not happy with with the way we're responding and so clearly we have some type of Disconnect that we need to address and if we receive training on that specific subject rather than just being self-reflective I think it makes sense to revisit what we've actually paid for and done as training as a group yeah I don't disagree with the non-specific and strategic example you're utilizing there um the the premise is that that's what the corrective action decision is would be is like we would need more training because the training we all agreed on that was important for us to take and didn't stick apparently is when we need to focus on because we all agreed that that was important for us to do when you throw a lump sum of training in there I'm concerned that it could over complicate the process or over limit future board decisions and actions if there was training back in the day that said you didn't you you shouldn't do this or act this way and or that it said it was okay and now it's not because people learn and they grow and they need to do that I don't have an I don't have a clear example and I think maybe I guess the question I guess I have to you is providing that maybe is a further discussion and we kind of evaluate Things based on that lens is this acceptable to kind of move forward with the understanding that we have at any point can we talk about this at a future board meeting as we kind of evaluate is there another issue or is there another concern that pops up that warrants that specific mention of training in there I mean I yeah I think that we can definitely proceed I think that we should keep that in mind as problems arise and use that as a lens that we may want to utilize when determining how we address a certain situation yeah I think that's an appropriate way to handle it I just wanted to bring up um under the third section the fourth bullet board members understand and follow the guidelines and how they interact with the community um are these guidelines can they be found somewhere are they going to be are they attached here um one more time where was that the um sorry the third section so no individual board member and then um fourth bullet point down so it used to have in their links um there's a board communication document and a social media decision tree that are um I they're more internal documents but I can write them that are more public-facing because it has like here's your sample email replies and I don't think everything needs to be but I can make a public version of that I think that would be decision media tree um is what Holly uses and she puts together a group when we're trying to decide whether or not we're confusing on social media and I don't know if that one is also public facing but we can rewrite it to make sure that the all the concepts are there but maybe they wouldn't need the exact like sample language and things like that that Holly uses I think that's great just for the sake of transparency and and for us easily for us yeah they used to be left here and I took them out when we made it perfect thank you and another on the bottom and do those guys just refresh my memory the guidelines understood what you're saying about making them more public-facing but do those have guidelines about you know what it looks like to meet with community members yeah okay that's what yeah we talked about it weekly update which I'd forgotten about so our version's there and then okay the public version will be but maybe we can talk about that next month just with the Edition okay yeah I think that'd be awesome I would agree though that that would be nice for the community and the public to know about that because I think people don't understand often how limited we can be because of some of the rules and guidelines that we have that we have to we are required to abide by and then some more just agreements as to how we do our work or trainings and that's always a great thing for people to understand also yeah I would agree and to your point I mean how could they understand you know so this is a great opportunity yeah I understand when we're new yeah well and that's a good point I mean as people are in the process of getting their signatures and potentially signing up to run for School Board they may not know about things they are a lot can and can't do and this would be a good spot for them to go research that so they can be effective in their role as they want to be by learning what they can and can't do make sense any other comments on the board governance document all right next to my item on the agenda is a board discussion of our referendum next steps um Lisa are you yep I'll do this um the referendum question that the board put on the ballot was supposed to be a reflection of what we heard and then we ask we asked about did we get the question so as of right now um 50.0 what was it 50 50.09 of the public said no and 49.91 of the public said yes there's 25 people there's a difference of different five votes between the yes and the no and the way that this works that um the mail-in ballots are accepted they had to be mailed prior to the election but they will count them all the way through next Tuesday the 22nd and this is the County elections and then they will get back to us and let us know how we did on November 20th second which is a week from today so we still have some time so referendum next steps isn't going to be a very robust discussion tonight because we don't know the outcome of the referendum yet um we did meet though yesterday uh yep yesterday afternoon some of us and talked about if it does turn out that there are more no's than yeses than um the board will have to have a discussion in December and we will be bringing you some feedback and probably a recommendation for you to consider just so you have a starting point for your discussion it is your decision but you need to start somewhere so we'll collect um we'll put we would put out a survey we would host focus groups we would do an analysis of the results we would look at our plan again and then come back to you so you have something to work with for your discussion in December if it it does appear that we could have done a better job communicating there was some confusion about the question which is we don't have a lot of leeway in writing that question but you know Tony and I did a road show and tried to explain to everyone that we could what that question meant because when you just read it on the ballot it it um it wasn't very obvious what we were asking for because we were asking for money to upgrade our facilities and there would be no increase to the bond and interest tax levy and that but that part wasn't in the question we're not allowed to put that in the question so it is possible that you might decide to put it back on the ballot in the spring and we could do a better job of explaining what that question means and what it means for you as an individual in the community and if you do that we would have to vote you would have to vote on that no later than January 17th so my next step is to bring you some data if the if it turns out we have more no then yes votes I'll bring you some data and we will continue the discussion on December 20th one thing I would like to throw out so that's a very compressed timeline to make a decision I would just like to we don't have the answer tonight but um I would think there might be a possibility that would you want to have another we'd have one meeting where we get the survey results and we're voting would there be a possibility people be open to having another meeting or a chance of a public forum where we could talk about it especially if we're talking about changing the question you we can put anything we want you know you can put anything you wanted yeah people said it was a bad question I don't know we didn't really talk about it but I think it might be prudent to um I don't know if you're going to be able to make that decision in one night that's right that's what I'm talking about so an early January the week of like the week of January 9th because um Tuesday January 17th is the day after MLK day so um we won't have school on that day so that's not a business day for you guys to to meet so we probably want to because Tony would have to go and file it at the county so we would need a little time so probably the week of January 9th we would need to call a special meeting to finish our discussion that would that would be my guess yeah that makes sense but we can do that we can't do that I just thought it might depending on what the survey says and what we hear at the next meeting it's a pretty big decision for us to make so I don't want to feel rushed for throwing it out there just put it on your radar that we might want to meet that week yes that makes sense yeah put on your Radars please could we also have when we're getting that information what the consequences are if we don't put it on the ballot yeah I think now we've been hearing that that people want to know what happens if like what's our plan if it's not on the ballot yeah okay any other questions on that all right next time on Autumn next item on our agenda is an action item which is approving uh letters of intent for the summer of 2023 projects and I'm assuming Mark Anderson is there he is exactly thank you everybody um even though it's snowed today we are talking about summer of 2023 projects um as we have been for a while um it's upgrades to the entrances at both Alice gusterson and JB Nelson um Augustus entrance right now is with the Early Childhood so they're one entrance and we will be separating those and making two entrances so one for ECC and one for Alice Gustafson also there we'll be doing some site improvements um if you um drive by Alice Gustin at the start of the day and the end of the day I'm Carlisle's a little busy so we're trying to get traffic off of Carlisle and then at JB Nelson um doing enhancements to that entrance as well and moving that entrance actually back to the original entrance at JB Nelson and then the Third um well kind of project but it's all really one project is at Rotolo and the serving line so the serving line cafeteria serving line is original so if you went there in the fall of 92 it's pretty similar to right now um along with the equipment some of it so we're looking to upgrade that as well what's different this year is kind of how we're bringing this to you um it's obviously different for me and I think it's different from anybody on this board actually I know it is um it's instead of having one general contractor so basically I say there's one general contractor that's awarded this bid for x amount of dollars we split it up into trade packages part of the reason is is we really haven't had a project to this amount of money in a while which is really not that much amount of money but we really haven't had any big projects since really the last referendum this has nothing to do with referendum but um to further explain that in more detail I'm going to invite Chad Alexander from lamp and he's our construction manager he can do a much better job explaining it than I can good evening so as a typical process is we we break the construction up into trades and those all went out to bid about three weeks ago and the bids were received today so before you are the trades that we would like to have authorization to issue letters of intent to and we will bring back four actual contract approval in December however we would like to um give the trades the opportunity to go ahead and begin the material procurement process only because of the long lead times we're experiencing these days particularly with kitchen equipment and wood doors and HVAC equipment so we want to try and get ahead of that so we'll be conducting scope review meetings over the next few days and based on the outcomes of those we expect to be able to then look to issue letters of intent to those apparent little bitters questions what's the exposure to the district with them going because it sounds as if you're saying with the letter of intent they can go out and get materials procured start the shop drawing process and whatever else what's the exposure to the district if you decide that one of those contracts can't be let to them we would not be asking them to put any deposits down on on cost but basically getting our line our place in line to get those get those materials and get those those items but nothing would be there'd be no exposure um with the letters up in time I can speak I'm in my private life I'm in the plumbing and HVAC industry and I can speak to the importance of getting in line because uh the supply chain issues that industry have gotten worse lately and if you don't act soon by the timelines we need to have this material you could be in trouble so I can speak to the urgency there other questions um I would request as a part of the contract a list of the quantity of bidders in each straight package and numbers I'm not asking you to give that now but it's important for at least me to realize the coverage of that so I'm aware of what our how competitive the bid Market was for us at that time we can include that information with the documents we'll be providing it thank you don't we usually get that yeah yeah we just I know it just bid today I'm just so still figuring it's just confirming that we would get it you want to make sure we get it because this is a little different than normal yeah about six hours ago actually anyone else great then I would entertain a motion that the board authorized letters of intent to bid trade contractors as outlined blue summer move by mensler is that you yeah second by kilburg all in favor any opposed all right um that was all of the action items tonight but we are going to move to comments before we go to closed sessions so I'll start with Lisa um it is board member appreciation day and um I am pleased to take this opportunity to share how much I appreciate the work that you do you work tirelessly you have so much information that you need to go through you have people that are contacting you and they are entrusting you with their um their most precious gift their their children but also the whole Community is looking to you and you have made this a destination district for teachers and students I know that Cindy can attest that she continues to get families every day coming in to register this is a place where students and families want to be and also this year I want to say that you really have made such great strides in your teamwork and and really committing to continuing to train and to revise your protocols and those types of things because you want to be a great team because that's how great things happen um and so you're a good example to the rest of us in the organization I also say that that Vision that you've set and you're pretty clear does impact not just people with students but people throughout the community there's reaping the benefits of a strong education system and you guys have really made some great strides and from where I'm sitting I think that some some of your the things that you do best are listening and communicating it's really important to all of you to build relationships with those in the community and those on the staff and I think that is really helpful to our cause and you also make very informed Decisions by doing your due diligence and attending committee meetings as observers and reading everything and learning as much as you can about this district and our community so to Circle back to the metaphor that we had at the beginning of the year thank you for everything that you're doing to put our little astronauts on the moon so thank you thanks Lisa Chris um as a parent of a senior things look different and I just want to say thank you to the community specifically going through the state experience for cross-country was unbelievable that the outpouring of support from alumni from coaches from the team from just everybody who was there it was amazing how much we support our students and as a parent it was extremely emotional and I am extremely grateful to the community that is helping raise my children so thank you for everything that the coaches did for cross country I know the same thing happens for band the same thing happens for football cross country just happens to be where my focus is because that's where my child is um but I know that this happens everywhere I see it in the three sports that my daughter plays I am internally grateful thank you I want to start by thanking everybody who's in attendance tonight everyone who spoke our student ambassadors uh everyone who emails the board over the course between our last meeting we do listen and read everything and it does inform our decisions so thank you I want to thank everybody in the community who voted in the November 8th election I think last I looked about 65 percent of registered voters in Batavia participated which uh was beyond my expectation so that was great and like Lisa's mentioned we really won't know the results of that until next Tuesday so I know I'm refreshing the County website quite a bit these days so we'll be watching that closely but thank you for everyone who participated in voting and then I just want to share uh three examples of me witnessing our students in action um the first was on November 6th um a lot of Batavia students participated in the United Way day of caring leak Leaf raking event so this was a Sunday afternoon between one and three and a lot of our students participated in raking leaves and getting them to the curb they were helping assisting senior citizens veterans and those with physical limitations and helping getting that work done and it might seem like a small thing but those small things really add up and make our community a great place to live and as someone who will be eligible for his AARP card in three weeks on behalf of my fellow senior citizens I want to say thank you for doing that um I want to say you know the student ambassadors mentioned it but I attended the production of 42nd Street on the 5th and I want to say um I was just blown away by the singing the dancing the staging the lighting the direction the performances I mean everything was incredible I mean I'm not an official like you Steve a musical theater but from I see it was uh it was like a Broadway level production I mean I couldn't believe these kids and I've known a lot of them since they were This Tall so it was really amazing The Joy really coming off that stage was evident to everybody there and then I also want to thank the parents because I know nothing like that can happen without the support the fundraising that's a lot of long nights for those families so thank you if you have not been to a production you really should go this one I think you'll be blown away put on and then finally I just want to congratulate the football team I've been attending all the games and it's been a real fun ride to see what they've accomplished they have advanced the semifinals the 787 semifinals they're playing like Zurich on Saturday and you know I would encourage everybody in the community to drive up it's about an hour drive to get up there and support them they're a gritty and talented Bunch like Zurich is a formidable opponent we have a little history with so it should be a really competitive game so I really I'm proud of them and I hope that the community goes out to support them and I just also want to say that you know I think Saturday will be the last game the last Saturday was the last game at Bulldog Stadium and I think now more than ever I realize that the game is just one part of the event and you know that Saturday's nights or Friday nights and Saturday afternoons are really about the football team but it's also about the band the flag core the cheerleaders the dance team uh everyone working concessions and security and the announcers and um you know that Collective is what makes Bulldog Stadium a special place on those nights and so I'm just really proud of what we've accomplished and I just hope that I wish the team and everybody associated with the team luck and go Bulldogs and Happy Thanksgiving to everybody thanks sir I'm just gonna say Happy Thanksgiving because if I say what I want to say it'll bring everybody down from okay thank you sir Craig okay Happy Thanksgiving um I'm gonna start off with like congratulations to all the sporting events and I mean the the track um and cross country and everything else that was occurring with that that I've been following a little bit I congratulations to them and all the parents that helped those kids attain what they were able to attain I saw something recently about swimming as well so kudos to those guys and gals as well so it seems from a sports perspective at least a lot of everybody's hitting on all cylinders and doing the best they can and that's all anybody can ask for and a number of are receiving accolades for it I'm going to jump on the 42nd Street train a bit um I if we've had a number of interactions with people that went and they all kind of come to the realization about kind of the quality and the level the performances of the kids but one of the things I I hope people kind of realize that I try to do a little bit is not just about that thing or that moment it's to help everybody understands the input and the effort that goes in advance of that so Riley who was here before is everybody probably has realized this is my son you know I'm no longer here he played in the pit with a number of other kids and they were literally in a pit in the front and the show actually has a funny moment where they pick on them a little bit and that's a lot of fun um but they um they amongst all of them if I understand and I hope somebody corrects me but it's still a good story if it's even if it's not true is most of them that played and did the tap dancing did not know how to do tap dancing until last summer that's if you watch that show that is incredible that they can do what they did to the level of synchronization that they were able to do and pull that off four or five nights in a row without the other other people don't realize is if you're familiar with a term called Tech week that happens a week or two beforehand I haven't seen my son in about three months it feels like because he's going to marching band move from a number of those kids in marching band moved right into the pit and he was walked out of school went right over the beefac effectively more than a few times my wife and I brought him food so that he could go back into his little hole and just keep playing until nine o'clock at night these all these kids do this incessantly all the time and so I applaud them not only for achieving all the work achieving for what they did in the show that they did is and it is also applauding all the effort that they put into it to hone the craft and to do what they love with that I'm going to pass it on to RJ if you don't mind you feel free thank you um so congratulations again to the football team and uh good luck congrats to marching band I actually I don't know why I couldn't grasp it are they going to the finals or no it happens all in one day it already happened it already happened okay and it was third place is that what happened they placed third in their division so if you pardon me for a minute yeah that's what I'm asking you the way to be thinking about it is like the football plays in there you know seven hey am I right on that yeah seven yeah I bet you know what division marching band is it's the same effectively so they they placed third in seven a let's say Okay imagine if football took all of their divisions and then everybody played each other again to determine who's the best in the state so they placed third and seven a and then they competed against every other band that was either first second in most cases in the state in their area so and they do that on the same day that's why I never said we performed again that night all right thank you for the lesson you're welcome did you guys coordinates with Craig could you last speak then no no they did a great job just imagining that my daughter is gonna do the marching band so I need to start yeah yeah um uh thank you to Aaron for the update on the Dei committee um knowing that there's immediate actions that we're going to hear about next month was music to my ears I feel like I've been waiting to hear for that we've been asking for immediate action or lots of people have been asking for media action so I don't know if we can even call it immediate action since it's been like two years year and a half so actions that were going to be able to actually um compare ourselves to to see if we've had success would be great to hear um this is the time of year where people are going to be out signing or asking for signatures so good luck to everyone who's going to be running for the school board in April I've heard rumors that there's going to be a good amount of people so if if you're out there and you see someone with a clipboard please help them out and give them signature I was telling other people when I was doing it that it doesn't mean you have to vote for them you're just you're just helping them get in the ballot those those you know but I made it you know what that is my stance um and then finally I just want to bring up the the building our feature together the referendum there was I think we're at 14 000 votes so far with them still being counted and I was looking at the history of the YouTube Watchers for this meeting and I don't there was like one month where there was like over a thousand viewers so to our 500 fans out there that are watching this if you could ask your friends and family to watch or at least go to the website so that they know what they're voting on that's like the rudest thing I think I've ever said is if people didn't know what they're voting on but if there's 14 000 votes and there's less than a thousand people that are viewing our discussions I don't know if that translates at least in my head that people are voting Beyond just seeing the measure of 140 million dollars and they're thinking beyond that so I'm hopeful that if it doesn't pass this time I know that I'm going to be talking towards us trying to do it next um but uh that's it for me thanks Sarah Jay Aaron okay so I have a little bit tonight so it's not a piggyback on something that Chris said because it really resonated with me about take it takes a village it takes the village and the reason why that resonated with me is because Mr Owen was here talking about the wonderful fabulous marching band and right before that he was at a meeting with parents talking about a fantastic trip that the music program is taking over winter break and he said I'm going to be here for 25 minutes to answer questions and then you have to go to the board meeting and show off our program he didn't say show off her program I said show off her program but my point is is that there are so many people that are helping us raise these fabulous fantastic children the music program the stage program the athletic program the arts program I could keep going and going and going but these individuals are helping all these kids find their individual passion their connection and their happy place and I am just so so thankful for all of those people who touch each of these children's lives in such profound ways and that brings me right into our Thanksgiving season I am so thankful for this board I'm so thankful for our community I'm so thankful for all of the people who are helping us raise our children um and I I just want to express my appreciation to this board again each of you are true servant leaders and I am touched by all of you I know our children are individ indirectly affected by each of your work and thank you so much for taking on that role it's not easy but um thank you for your service leadership and that's all I have tonight thank you Aaron yeah the joy of going last means there's absolutely nothing I could say that it's half what any of you said so I will just move on to our closed session um so I would entertain a motion to move to closed session for the following reason the appointment employment compensation discipline performance or dismissal of specific employees specific individuals who serve as independent contractors in a park recreational or educational setting or specific volunteers of the public body or legal counsel for the public body including hearing testimony on a complaint Lodge against an employee a specific individual who serves as an independent contractor in a park recreational or educational setting or a volunteer of the public body or against legal counsel for the public body to determine its validity however a meaning to consider an increase in compensation to a specific employee of a public body that is subject to the local government wage increase transparency act may not be closed and shall be open to the public and posted and held in accordance with the open meetings Act yes thank you moved by myself second by Mathis all in favor all right there will be no action after our closed session meeting yeah that's fine and it's like are we supposed to take them did you um I couldn't tell Riley was your son or anything right oh my God that was just stupid

it's time for jumping that got on the last one but in reference to 1.10 that's in regards to the full-time higher of an athletic director currently our athletic director works part-time while also teaching three sections of math the responsibilities of the athletic director role are expansive ranging not only from organizing all aspects of sports teams and competitions overseeing coaches Transportation but I'll also walk you through last minute changes cancellations and rescheduling this requires immediate ability to communicate important information out quickly the newly formed full-time athletic role would also include a shared role of being a director of student enrollment which would potentially also have a monitoring role in the cafeteria hallways and overseeing and after school program for our student athletes to help them with homework prior to games and practices this also opens up the need for the new math position which would increase our offerings in the areas of mathematics and finance is the idea resource we've probably seen this it's a positive Special Olympics um people with disabilities on the same teams so Massachusetts has a chapter on history but it's being done at the local high schools and so we want to become part of that and you know one thing again I think Mr Carl um what we had next month to talk about that um and also talk about the possibility of some programs I think one of the programs he was talking about having Enterprise public policies most of the schools actually have this program going on um and they have almost 100 participation in this school so you know when we talk about being inclusive and getting everybody involved many times students with disabilities don't get those opportunities so we need to provide that stuff it's important kids are about Equity we can't talk about any of that stuff not just in the classroom but also you know athletes can have a full-time at life director we'll help with the building management we'll do all of that stuff we'll help with things like combustible because that's not going away and we had issues with bussing in sports and that that is not something that Nancy should be hands in sports possible that should be done at the school level but also expanding that program so we'll get uh you know presentation on that next month I'm going to ask you to pick a vote on sometimes um the bigger picture is this uh full-time event like you know so just so you know the direction thank you in terms of the job description it is um that's a really good question that I think we would have to make you some considerations on that because I think there are probably a lot of students as well the staff probably interested in something from that nature foreign [Music] um it also would help us with explanating you know hard it takes to investigate disciplinary issues and help us to reach resolutions faster and um between that new ad student culture director and an additional assistant principal that would also increase the monitoring of hallways bathrooms in the cafeteria to more effectively contribute to Greater safety I'm only going to speak twice but if I could just be friends but High School principal and you know they're very very different students and high school students and we haven't in my opinion well in the community being able to address that specifically I mean there's two ways of doing it if we could have gone with two principles one assistant Festival but we think the best way to do it the assistant principle of no knowledge traditional one is this building management operations and actually works so they need that expert to continue the middle school or high school and so that's what I wanted to achieve I mean again since I I got here that we're not addressing that and I don't disagree with it but um again it requires an investment interest so that's I think that's another that's another that's another big piece here okay I'm going to actually back up a little bit of this one 1.8 which is our our need and our plan to add an additional special education teacher come to mental staff um the student population is an individual special education teacher at this point to meet the significant social emotional um that we're seeing um foreign service for families that we contract with a valley collaborative War it is currently funded in June of this year we have I believe it's 10 years they refer to the slots for families and they help connect families in need with services in the community sometimes I think we can all probably relate things happen quickly in families I think would be difficult to um access and secure the resources that might be needed and so this is the service that connects with the family and wraps around and supports them with the velocity completed resources there's our plan to continue that so that we can continue those slots out of those 10 families are currently receiving those services and otherwise they would be discontinued in June um the next item is the district flow nurse in order to adequately meet the health and the safety needs of the children for two primary purposes the first into the stability of our nursing staff out of approximately eight out of the last 12 months we've actually been relying on the floaters to serve a long-term substitute for the schoolers because we've had difficulty included nurses in some of those spots and frankly the the landscape of the health offices has changed since covet the second primary purpose of adding the district vote North as a permanent position is really to ensure that we can that we have Equitable access to all of like the after-school programs the sports the field trips Etc um as our student Community becomes more medically complex I'm a nurse on staff is required for them to be able to access and attend those types of events I think I've been exercising as well [Music] um our plan is to add a second bcba to the district BCA stands for board and certified behavior and analysts we've had one bcba in the district for some time and up until about covet that was adequate to coming out of covid um the needs to support students teachers and families of children with unsafe and challenging Behavior has increased significantly bcdas provide a lot of training to not only do they provide direct service to students but they provide a lot of training to staff and families and at this point in order to support students appropriately and to remain compliant we do need to add an initialize um occupational therapist OT for short the district has a long history of having one OT in the district and the need for an additional OT has slowly increased over time coming out of code would that increase again in a bit um we've been up offsetting that with some contracts and services through Aspen Valley collaborative and we are at the point where we will need to add a second occupational therapist for our own staff to continue to meet the needs of our students in the district they work on a variety of skills with students ranging from academics to self-regulation on self-care work skills I believe that those were my kind of um the last one on page 11 1.129 is a request for an additional full-time technology technician currently we're covering four buildings with three people this would allow us to basically have the staff technology staff person on site and each building at least on on an average basis there are times when we still get pulled into having to work together on projects but um for the most part it would cut down the need for users to wait for someone to arrive on site and again it happens very often where um you know a problem is immediate when you're in the classroom and you have to wait 20 minutes or 30 minutes two hours for a tech to arrive it it disrupts through classroom so we're at the point now where the number one to one we're talking about supporting 1300 PMT and uh upwards of 4 000 devices um that that was reported and so the need for that that additional staff portion is definitely here and then our second objective teaching and learning to guarantee that each child in our district pre-k through 12 is provided with an equitable opportunity to access their education regardless of race culture disabilities gender or socioeconomic level we want to do this by ensuring the curriculum meets the needs of all learners ensure the teaching staff is supported by providing them with professional development opportunities resources and training to improve and enhance enhanced structural practices three by building Innovative programming that supports the needs of all of our learners before providing our families with ongoing communication five by reaching out to the community for additional resources that foreign ERS the first two here are similar established or writing curriculum committee to pilot with selection to establish a social emotional curriculum community to look at those materials as well there are two versions of the same goal over the past three years we've made significant progress in establishing a guaranteed and viable curriculum Elementary School students these two items to represent a continuations you've identified the quality of student writing is an area of need of attention and we'll be examine the writing writing the curriculum tools which align with our broader language arts curriculum our social emotional curriculum is also due for we may update purchase a new one or somewhere on page 13 and one I could just highlight a few of the areas that were focused on in Middle School we're looking at the um in 2.1.7 and 8 purchasing budgeting purchasing social emotional curriculum for the middle school I know that this was a topic of concern um through covet and certainly at the middle school desire to continue the work during the elementary school and have dedicated time to meet with students Greg picarello who is a middle school guidance counselor and that who actually employs the guidance department has been structured in that way so so right now Services just the middle school he and I have been meeting together working together to select a social emotional curriculum we were looking at someone just sent to several kids from here in school Community which is what we use at the elementary level um we're going to be leading the crisis team in December to also talk about the curriculum there and we also want to try to work and create the schedule we're going to get into the classrooms in a more frequent and consistent base so it's a combination of the resource and the time a four-year grade to get into those classrooms and have and have meaningful conversations because Hotel structured programs in 2.1 points and 2.1.10 Lisa said before brought this to my attention she and I have talked about this for quite some time the idea of bringing in environmental science is one of the chosen courses in our high school level higher education is increasing the number of programs available to students now at the very hot area for colleges and for careers Majors include sustainability environmental engineering natural resources and conservation ecology sustainable agriculture and Environmental Studies [Music] familiar knowledgeable about these already have a number time to graduate Wisconsin in local farms that they include purchased and are doing sustainable farming from that particular field so I'm very excited the possibility we're doing that portion to come onto um in 2.14 I want to focus for a moment on Professor we're always required by Destiny to review our curriculum and don't just purchase it and give it people can do pilots on the purchases or the potential purchases we usually spend a year on those Pilots one of the things that the teachers do during that time is go through the lens of considering if there are biases in any way in in the materials that we're looking at um they actually have problems charts that they fill out to ensure that we don't see that in the curriculum of the resources you're purchasing so in addition to that though we want to broaden our students awareness of other cultures countries languages and races across the world by bringing in more read-alouds and novels and making them grow forward we've become well-rounded individuals so we just want to expand their knowledge base about the world around them I also want to bring in and I keep getting harassed for this um thank you bye okay so I am going to speak to professional development opportunities 2.2.1 focuses on literacy and Math training early literacy cases two and three through five our new hmh program this is crucial to what we do as Educators we teach and we learn and so having something in place where we can continually run new things and ways to teach our students is extremely important 2.2.2 talks about tiered systems of support which is something that we are working on in terms of our IST process and talking about the ways that we can meet student needs where they are and all the different varieties of ways that we can do that encouraging teachers to use those in the classroom and then Circle back to see if it was effective Circle back out to see if we could try something different and circle so that process is really important and so there are all sorts of tears of that and that is crucial for us to be able to work with teachers outside of the classroom time to be able to have this discussions sure um and I will speak to two point um two three and two four which also addressed professionals development in the areas of supporting students and statistics of special education services as well as a paraprofessional um professional position and both of those really both of those areas as John Maurice spoke about really increased the expertise level of our staff working with all students understanding you know their depth of knowledge in terms of the disability learning styles instructional strategies and collaboration being able to increase positive behaviors and reducing behaviors that interfere with learning um 14.3 is to build innovative ideas the support and the chance to address our first few years um 2.3.1 area 2.32 providing additional support for supporting the universe and providing meaningful way after school because we seek to enhance and expand the learning opportunities for our elementary students we want to explore after hours we plan to continue to develop our summertime acceleration program in addition because we know that already doesn't end at 305.

congratulations Adrian do you have anything to say to him middle name do you have anything to say to Mr Greer um well two things one um just so appreciate your leadership this past year over some really difficult decisions um and some really difficult meetings um and two I'm really I'm really excited that you decided to apply for that appointment and it will be here four more years so I I think I think the district would miss you if you weren't here so I really appreciate that can we take a picture over here Mr Speaker do you want to say a few words Mr Greer uh president I'm sorry for a couple more hours um no just just just thank you thank you for for your words thank you for uh taking the time to share uh your thoughts and and appreciation I appreciate it this is not easy work uh but it's important for uh so it's an honor to have been on uh this dice to continue to be on the the dice board member rodrig Espana and to have been on with you board member thank you Adrian well now we will move to uh 5.0 consent calendar and specifically 5.1 and 5.2 that we see here on our consent calendar and so is there a motion to approve um our consent calendar I'll make a motion to approve second and there will be no discussion and so we will go ahead and vote and the motion passes three yes to two absent which brings us to 6.0 our study session where we will use the remainder of our time and 6.1 specifically which is presentation of Azusa Unified School District Pre-K to three coherence collaboration it's the boring part no I'm kidding you're all welcome to stay but this is gonna be it yes we're transitioning to like to a meeting yeah you're welcome you're welcome to go as well all right we'd love for you to all stay you're free to go particularly we could take a picture yeah Gojo my God all right the floor is yours thank you good evening board president Greer Board of Education superintendent Ortega and cabinet tonight we are excited to share the work and journey of our p3cc Pre-K to uh third grade coherence collaboration um I am pleased to be a part of this amazing team and to be included in the amazing work that this team has done thus far in early mathematics through their partnership with the California Ed partners and um Improvement team we will be presenting with some of the members of this team this evening I'd like to introduce uh Jenny Lee our director of early childhood education program Adriana Garcia Medina our director of Educational Services Jeanette Flores principal of Victor Hodge Elementary School Alicia Vargas Smith the resource teacher at Longfellow School and last but certainly not least Julie mcgow our elementary math Tulsa this is our third year um of a collaboration with California Ed Partners uh to build coherence between our early childhood and Elementary programs because as we know great childhood Pro Early Childhood programs are not enough for students research shows that the positive effects of early education programs were often not sustained after children enter kindergarten and Elementary School often the results often this results in a lack of articulation and coherence between preschool programs and Elementary programs the pace pk3 alignment report barely calls out the need for PK through third grade alignment in the areas of high quality learning experiences adult Collaborative Learning and assessment of learning work in these Key Systems supports our ausd success drivers high quality learning experiences for students include collaborative practices academic rigor and academic discourse this is a theme that you will see throughout this presentation tonight when we create opportunities for adult Collaborative Learning principals teachers and support staff have opportunities to collaborate and have academic discourse which deepens our understanding of quality rigorous instruction the assessment of learning provides feedback or Effectiveness in applying success drivers as well as insight as to how we can deepen our teaching practices in 2020 ausd was selected to participate in the California education Partners p3cc Grant California education Partners brought together districts from across California and expert by Partners from the Stanford Development and research in early math education the Dream Network to work on a three-year process of aligning District systems and resources to provide coherent in preschool to third grade learning systems together we have developed a lens for high quality early mathematic reading teaching and learning grow burst at robot bus Surf and thoughtful assessment practices and coherent learning across preschool to third grade after we started this work the state of California identified the native or preschool to third grade alignment and the work of the district in p3cc is serving as model for house district can align their learning systems this mean we have been and are ahead of other states in this world as well as in the implementations of upk at the beginning of this collaboration we defined our team aspiration at the end of three years ausd will have a well-established cohesive instrumental math math plan from preschool to third grade in which adults collaboratively and systematically understand the system use data to drive instruction decisions and Implement continuous Improvement plans to meet the needs of all students specifically bilingual learners student with disabilities and social economically disadvantage it was very important for a team to examine all of our system with the land of providing Equity access and inclusion for all members of The ausd Learning Community throughout this process we have remained too to our aspiration and have also been focusing on how we can best meet the diverse needs of our multilingual Learners students with disabilities and students who are socially academically disadvantaged foreign we analyzed assessment data provided by our district assessment system we also looked at what kinds of data were available and discovered that most of our assessments did not lend themselves to Cross grade level conversations and student about student growth we adjusted to the new realities of online instruction not sure if you have to click I think what we shared uh learning opportunities with teachers which shifted to an online platform we also uh participated in book clubs and had training with Megan Frankie and her team from UCLA as a result of these learning opportunities teachers wanted to apply what they had learned about counting collections so we learned to do counting collections online and you click I think it's not coming in here doing your three this slide shows you uh how families shared their uh collections uh during distance learning and online uh opportunities students had the opportunity to count objects from everyday life such as their dolls and their Hot Wheels and it was exciting to see our students learning uh together at home next slide one back foot and you're okay in year two uh we piloted counting collections um and we also looked at a new problem solving assessment item uh we also in this year we um ensured that teachers were doing counting collections weekly as we explored uh using a high leverage uh teaching practice um and we were also piloting our new PK through second grade um assessment uh based on feedback uh from our classroom teachers our third through fifth grade uh grade levels are piloting a new problem-solving item for uh the assessment this school year and I just add something to this can I speak now yes so I noticed on the counting collection I really enjoyed seeing it when it was online because parents were participating with their child at home and they were learning together and I think it's really important that um you know the parent cannot come to school with them obviously but I think at this point they did work with them on this Kanye collection and they were having fun with their child and I think that was great to see absolutely it did give them a window into this the strategy that we were that we're implementing now as they were able to implement it at home with teacher support so one of the first focuses um as a team um was to implement County Collections accounting collections is an opportunity for the children to work together with a partner um to count a collection of objects students use their own strategies to organize their own personal collection some of the high quality learning experiences that children benefit from during the county collection is that students are able to count together with a partner teachers allow students to select their own collection from specific debts for example a beginner beginning counter might select um from bags which might have five ten objects uh in the in the bag whereas Advanced snotters can collect a bag that might have under 200 objects during the county collection the teacher interacts with students asking questions and Reporting the strategies that the children use and another benefit is that the students also learn from the insights of their so we want to give you a chance today to actually try to bring a county clerk so we're going to ask you to find a partner um you are going to work together to select we have quite a variety of items so we'll bring them by for you you need to decide together how you're going to organize your collection um and if you decide you need tools such as a 10 frame or 100 grid we have those available as well so we'll be bringing them by for you to come and count some collections okay foreign we need everything foreign oh yeah foreign at first foreign [Music] [Laughter] thank you so you guys chose to use the large time frames which are a favorite of mine um so it gave you a visual I like it the way we said that it up this way because it's easier to count and it's more I'm on hand low learner so visually it's spaced out and it's easier for me to count them and you guys chose to count by twos and also by five you tried it both ways but you had a preference yes or two why was because it's easier to count them they're more familiar more familiar but you guys I saw you counted several different ways yeah originally we started uh just putting one in each bucket until we realized that we were definitely gonna need to put a lot more than one in each each bucket uh we ended up with 10 in each bucket so therefore we knew that we had 60 but five left over so we had 65 and then uh were asked over and over to think about other ways to rearrange it and so we think we found a pretty efficient way of arranging that uh where now we have five slots uh with 13 Penny both still at 65.

we want to support efforts for children to expand on and further explore your foreign pto's in both elementary schools have been very supportive of these efforts of the past we hope to harness that cooperation to make an integrator impact of our students 2.3.304 this is my favorite part of this whole meeting establish the social emotional curriculum and purchase a pilot program you might look you might notice some similarity there two point 3.3 102.344 are great examples of how organizational systems can still lead you wanting more these duplicate goals 2.1.1 and 2.1 32.1.4 the earlier goes are much more clearly fleshed out and these two are supposed to be deleted so take out your big red patterns [Music] oh in 2.3.5 is that page 16 developing a financial literacy workshop and assembly on the Savings Bank this is going to show up again in the high school level let me say to explain is a partner of ours they have a banking program already here at tohonto we work with them all the time they come to our parent camps um video banking programs and in schools um I'd love to share with you already have a meeting and Savings Bank on Friday we've been playing uh okay communicating with each other with the emails to sit down and start that Financial Services plan and that program so we're going to be working on putting that in Facebook assemblies and workshops for the younger students they just have some online game opportunities where you can create your own business kind of like a Minecraft format um but also just coming in and working with those children explaining are you banking on basic levels to them working with them and introducing responsibility and then going up to the high school where we'll develop again a partnership Savings Bank coursework that will make mandatory for all students to take that course applying to graduation so they said the Lord the next one That Matters to the equation and I've been talking about this since I came here 15 years ago this one involves 2.3.7 bringing World Language to the elementary schools doing it as a special so that it could go opposite Health classes exposing our students other languages cultures travel and the broader world our children travel because they know that there are other language languages they get people coming to our country I struggle to understand why we don't offer some form of World Language it does not have to be so that the children are fluid although there are programs out there in elementary schools where there are we're very small and it's hard to we would have to get somebody to teach every single year before I have a teacher who speaks fluent Spanish or French or whatever we choose let's at least try to get some kind of teaching going there's some kind of instruction from this area um so there's Endless Possibilities from that I do want to consider strongly for engineering program Sally was in Middle School so in regards to 2.311 and 2.312 it's in regards to the shadowing and internship experience for students we're really hopeful over the next two years that we can really enrich a student's experience to learning seeing observing and interacting the jobs after them take place postgraduate we're hopeful that this would make them have more informed career choices and educational choices and page 19 2.3.17 and that will impact teaching and learning the ways from K to 12.

oh we already cleaned up I didn't know um so we um that's all right usually we ask you to leave it out so we can see for show and tell but that's all right yeah so we we um we counted by 10. well first we first we had fun just dividing it by the what kind of by the kind of rock it was as much as we could and then we counted by 10. that is something that we see a lot is that many of our students and we as adults really enjoy the Sorting part and that we tend to bite it and kind of sort it out first and then we start now so there's a reason that we're doing this this besides that it's fun and I'm going to go back so when we think about doing counting collections for me it's like having a window into student thinking it gives me an opportunity to see if they have cardinality if they have number order uh one-to-one correspondence how they group um it's also a chance for us to see our high leverage practices in action we can actually see our students doing those things there in our classroom it also matches what we've been talking about with our teachers this year these six High leverage mathematical pedagogical practices let's take a look at these did we effectively elicit your mathematical ideas in doing some Counting had an opportunity for that did you get to use tools and representations of your own truth you notice each group did this a different way that's really important that it's not the teacher saying this is how I want it done this is a chance for students to develop their mapping you know I liked about it Miss nogal is that you know each every student has the opportunity of participating and it's not only just certain students it's all the students working together I really like that it's really exciting and something I love about you as well as the kids love it but it's also if we're able to differentiate so each of you selected a set that you were comfortable with you selected a different size and teachers help students select the size that's the right stretch level for them did we ask you follow-up questions absolutely were we able to use let's say this was a lesson but I used what I saw in your mathematical thinking to then spread to the next fact yeah I gained a lot of information there how about having Mass conversations this is actually a district Focus for us this year that we've selected having conversations in math class where students share their ideas with each other is that what you were doing and then I hope that this one was true because this is very important to me did you feel that you were positioned as a capable method and the question was you asked why did we do it that way so we had an have an answer why we felt it was best doing it by 10s or 20s or by the bucket or whatever you know and that's also great too it gives you a chance to be able to express your thinking and so that you are confident as you do this so as you know um we see our students doing this and you can see some of our students here in action this is my favorite thing to be in classrooms to see because really what we see when we see these students doing this is that there is 100 of our students who are engaged it's one of those times where I can walk in and see every single student doing something that that their just right level that's meeting their needs getting them ready laying that strong foundation for all that number sense make them successful as they move forward so accounting collections is really a favorite activity as we one of the clear goals that we have for all of our students is for them to become problem solvers last year we set a goal that 50 of our multilingual Learners would be able to apply a valid strategy to solve a word problem as part of our goal um we did this work with County Collections and it led us to wonder um if we were to start using planning collections on a weekly basis would it help our multilingual Learners and students with disabilities develop cardinality specifically cardinality referring to this idea that the last number that you said when you're counting describes the size of the set so for example I'm counting five one two three four five and then Arturo asked Julie how many did you count if I understand that that last number describes the set I have cardinality I would say I counted five if I have not developed that yet what you'll see students do is ask them and they would say one two three four five and they would begin again because they don't actually understand how to describe that set so what we did was we recruited um teachers who would pilot for us doing the counting collections weekly um for six to eight weeks they would collect data on cardinality specifically um for six students and we wanted them to two students who were struggling with math so we had English Learners with disabilities and students who Associated we also had enough conversation so Mrs Vargas Smith and I would meet with the teachers and look at their data and say let's put our heads together what could we do next to help build the math understands if you take a look you can see after just this six to eight week Pilots we saw some significant results with many of our students who had not made growth in this idea of cardinality throughout the school year all of a sudden make a lot of we also saw that this was true with one of our Target groups which is our English learner you can see in the next slide that specifically we saw some good growth in that and as you know the term emergent bilingual is also used for our English learners you can see that they are growing but the Gap still exists and so we want to begin to address that we also saw the Gap continued with our students with disabilities we want to continue to address that so this year we have achievement data from the state testing which we haven't had for a few years so these are um our third grade students socioeconomically disadvantaged students with some comparison data to Los Angeles County and the state of California we know that across the state students in California were adversely affected by the pandemic but we are looking forward to the work of the team and continuing to support that growth in mathematics this slide shows some data that compares Azusa unified socioeconomically disadvantaged students with other districts that are part of the p3cc collaborative and now we have um some voices from teachers um and their experience with this work and with counting collections understand [Music] strangers the community I think this is my point because yeah yeah it sounds like it's the mic here [Music] okay it's very helpful so just myself it seems like that's where we're getting the feedback the time and effort to prep it because it pays off in the classroom I was following um about six kids and um I've seen so much growth uh with their numbers um Learning Place Value um especially foreign you had an opportunity to hear all right so you had an opportunity to hear teacher voices regarding their experience with counting Collections and you also had an experience with counting collections here tonight um and you see here the the results of our pilot showed that counting collections is an effective practice for all our students and as a result we've selected it as a signature practice for PK through second grade elementary math programs and by signature practice we mean that you can expect to see accounting collections implemented across all all Elementary classrooms we launched it as a weekly signature practice in the fall and we can't wait to see the continued growth that our students will show in fact based on the data that was collected from accounting collections our math leadership team replaced the old District assessments with accounting collections data peace in order to focus on problem solving for our students I'm gonna ask a question so when you say across all grade levels so you're talking about preschool or TK to fifth to sixth grade or what what grades you were talking about it would have to third grade it would be up to PK through second grade and they're all doing it it should it's a signature practice so they're doing it at least once a week um and because it's a signature practice and so how how does it look different than as let's say a kid that I could see like this year you have kids doing it new right but what about a kid that started in TK and now they've been doing it PK Kinder for a sec so so how does it how will it look different in a couple years when these kids have done been doing this same thing for four years so in in every class you're gonna have varied abilities right and so your little ones might start with the smaller collections so they might be working on zero to five uh objects they might be make make their way up to 10 objects but if you're thinking about maybe a second grade class you're going to have those larger collections or maybe they're counting 50 objects or 60 objects and they may be grouping uh by fives they may be grouping by twos so it just depends on what's what a grade level you are seeing and then based on what collection they're they're using uh teacher would differentiate by asking questions right and so those questions will lead them to organizing some of the questions that you may have heard as you were working on your own collection was can you show me a different way to organize or what might be another way that you count so it's those questions and prompt the students to take their skills to a higher level as as they grow and work on the larger collections the kinds of questions that we ask will change so we might be asking is their younger questions about if we add one more or we take away one but we were asking your group about really division questions and being able to think about if we divided this into these groups um and you had these any left over could be divided a different way and have fewer left or if we divide it again so that they're really integrating some multiplication and division as they do that they can also begin to work with much larger bets even sets like boxes that would say I have thousand Staples in this box we only have 500 in this box and a thousand here how would you group those together so there's a lot of different ways that we can change that as they grow so then how are teachers being prepared to have those kind of ask those kind of questions that are really appropriate maybe for the where the level of the child is a great question I'm asking yes um we have been working on this actually for many years even before we started our p3cc where we had begun training for teachers um and now we're really shifting into saying we all know how to get this started we're doing a lot of coaching so that gives me an opportunity to be in classrooms a lot um Alicia vargasmith is also in classrooms coaching many of our preschool and TK teachers and we're having opportunities for teachers to collaborate and it's one of the things we are dreaming about is having more opportunities to say Wow Let's sit down and talk about this student work what do you recommend that I do next and making that really part of our PLC conversation so it's going to be an opportunity for us to coach so that we continue to keep in that work and don't just talk about um so that they will continue to grow so when we Implement something new we want the teachers um to have the support that they need um we have provided book clubs um build parties where we purchased interesting items than the teachers uh were able to come and build their classroom collections um this for instance is the picture of the Longfellow cafeteria where it was filled with materials for counting Collections and the teachers were able to come in and pick up and choose what they needed for their collections um we have also set up some launch dates um to go into teachers classrooms and get their students started with their accounting Collections and we are also providing Next Step um conversations um with teachers so that they could have a thought partner and consider the next step for learning with their students as we deepened our work we realized that we needed a vision statement for our elementary math program as well as descriptors of what we wanted to see across our Elementary classroom would anyone like to volunteer to read our vision statement sure all Aus students are problem solvers who make sense of rigorous real world mathematical tasks and communicate their strategies and reasoning in a variety of ways and inclusive learning communities because all students are able to learn mathematics thank you president Greer and special attention to all students we want to make sure that all students have this opportunity to live through this Vision in our classroom as part of the process of developing a vision statement our team described the qualities that we should see evident in all our classrooms just please take a minute to look at these statements that our team came up with that we would like to see across our classrooms at the same time we engaged in learning with our principals our teachers our instructional leaders as we looked at these six High leverage mathematical practices this fall our teachers uh selected two of these uh from the vision statement that resonated most with them they identified with high leverage that pedagogical practices they would bring would help them bring these statements to life in their classrooms we also identified as a district that we would be having conversations in math classes where students share ideas with each other and hopefully you were able to have that experience today we also were able to tie these high level math practices to Our Success hey so as I was beginning to say earlier uh we were one of the goals that we had was that all of our multilingual learner students would have a problem a strategy to be able to problem solve and we were shooting for 50 50 of our multilingual Learners would be able to apply a valid strategy to solve a word problem and we piloted a program solving solving idle with our K3 students to provide us with the data about our effectiveness we collected data for Kinder and first grades in the fall and the spring and collected data for second and third grades in fall and winter and that is our data so assessment a and we have assessment B our data shows that 82.4 percent of our students had a strategy to solve and add to results unknown problem and 75.9 percent of our multilingual Learners had a strategy to solve and add to result unknown problem so we see uh in assessment B that there is growth in in the spring and the fall for all of our students sorry about that we are proud to share um a new goal that has been established by the team um would somebody like to volunteer to read the new Poll for us by June of 2023 100 of PK through third grade multilingual Learners will be able to apply a valid strategy to solve a word problem as measured by district and early childhood assessment P3 PK through three multilingual Learners will increase by 30 and all students will increase 25 in operations in algebraic thinking as measured by our district assessment so we um as a team established a lofty goal for ourselves that all of our um pk3 through third grade multilingual Learners will be utilizing a strategy to apply to a soluble word problem so that's what we're shooting for and as we wrap up our collaboration with California Ed Partners we look to sustaining and scaling this work with the district Improvement plan adult Collaborative Learning using student work samples from our new assessments to Anchor our PLC conversations we are also developing accounting collections oh sorry we're also developing opportunities for teachers to collaborate across grade levels in looking at that work through their PLC um team time we're also looking at the high quality learning experiences to deepen our lens for high quality instruction through the six High leverage practices and supporting teachers and coming alongside them with coaching and opportunities for professional learning um we also looking to the assessment of learning PK through second grade will utilize our revised assessments next year and we are piloting some new items for third through fifth grade on this year's assessment and we are planning to utilize what the team has learned through this process to refine our learning systems and to focus on coherence in the Upper Grade as well and now we open it up to questions so um I appreciate that this is um that you've taken a strategy and really had people go deep and and really have um adoption you know it is one strategy it's not a complete program I so I guess the analogy that I'll make is that I feel like this feels very similar to where we were when we when we started doing like think parashare and we went deep and then we had everyone do that right or we had a different strategy um and now that we're bringing in still and some of the schools are like oh my God we're putting it all together right now it all makes sense I know why we were doing these different pieces and so I just wonder about that coherence right and how we make sure that yes we're giving people deep opportunities to put into practice a really strong strategy and do it well which is important right but at the same time not making people feel like oh this is the answer because now our kids know cardinality and ordinality can can now count up to a certain amount right because math is so much more complex than that so I just I'm curious about you know where is that in your thinking in terms of like yes we have a strong strategy where is the risk and what happens the other four days when the kids do this one day a week you know what's happening so in looking at the articulation plan you know the the focus of of this work is to establish some strong foundation and to really maximize and benefit that work and early learning that students are getting in preschool and how do we sustain that as students move from preschool through the grade levels and in looking at how we are weaving these counting collection when we look at those High leverage math practices how do how are we lifting those up throughout the learning that the students are doing on the other four days outside of County Collections so what you saw from the responses from the teachers was an understanding of of seeing how students are responding to these opportunities for collaborating around the counting collection but the power and the collaboration and the questioning of teachers has really shifted the instruction that we see in classrooms so for example when we've gone in on site visits we've seen and almost every classroom that I've been in this year during math time I've not seen a teacher standing up in front of the room teaching at the Whiteboard during that I see students in collaborative groups they have manipulatives they might have their math books they might have their math boxes but it's really the the Strat the Highlight leverage strategies that the teachers are experiencing through the work with counting collections were seen come alive through other aspects of mathematics and so the team is really looking to how do we continue to focus on those High leverage strategies to continue to lift that up through the other mathematics work that we're doing so oh how are we are are we then how are we exposing teachers like let's say okay this happens once a week right um and those other four days maybe they have shapes and they want to start trying to do like 10 grams right you know how are how are we giving teachers opportunities to expand right what that kind of instruction looks like right because that in my mind that is quality that that is the best instruction we want to see right Hands-On making connections between my brain and my hands and what am I and what's happening in my mouth right so so how are we doing Julie do you want to speak a little bit at night [Music] as as Verma stated that it's been really exciting to use this and I agree completely that this is a jumping off point for us to deepen our practice and then we continue to build and it's just like when you have a group of students all of our teachers are in a different place with this so some of them have been doing counting collections for four or five years and they're ready to move on to the next piece so we have them doing choral counting we have them supporting students with Hands-On work with each of the different problem types um we're looking at all of the routines that are called out in the proposed new framework because there are a lot of those that are really used to develop number sense and we also still have our very strong number sense based math curriculum from Everyday Math so we're really integrating this within that fortunately Everyday Math was written with one day a week available for students to be able to do these kinds of activities and to differentiate instruction so we're not having to take that away instead we're adding to that so that they they can deepen that practice but it's going to be an exciting thing as we build simultaneously um a lot of different practices as we can continue to deepen that thanks and then my other question is really around um I'm just going to say the kind of framing I'm hearing around English Learners or multilingual Learners about like oh this is going to help them right um they they don't have mathematical problems right the problem is maybe how the teacher's delivering language and how they're understanding right and so I worry about that connection thinking about oh we're going to group special ed and El students because they're so far behind they're they're behind probably because what's happening in the classroom and how the teacher is either differentiating or scaffolding right making it accessible to those students and so I just wonder about that and how you're framing that so that your teachers understand you know how to decide the kind of support students need right I think this is intimately tied to this idea of we have dual language Learners how are we supporting them in early years and supporting their primary language right but I'm just wondering about that as well because I I I'm kind of hearing that undertone about like oh we have the El and the feds and we're going to be focusing on those two groups so in terms of identifying those groups to look up or to lift up is really to really focus on the achievement of those groups and to ensure that those groups of students aren't left behind but particularly um through the work that we see um posted here with the high leverage practices and the tied to success drivers we have been very intentional about how we are looking at language for all students how we are tying the work that we are doing during our instructional um leaders meetings um and our coaching um and support of principals and their instructional leadership um we had an opportunity to to weave um I believe it was in our last IL um with our Ela toastas and with Julie how do we lift up a language function through a small group of mathematics lesson and when we think about the counting collection it really lends itself to that opportunity for all students to engage um through the multiple modalities that you described you got to you know you said you were a Hands-On learner having you know the various tools and students are able to express all of those things but we really lift up those groups of students because we want to ensure that the work and the instruction that is being provided in the classroom is giving them that access that entry point so that they are successful yes my question was you know I like how you have set goals where you're going to be at in June 2023 so um how can you tell if these students understand I mean do they take like a test or is it by their test taking how do we get to know if they're getting it right so we developed some assessment that I that are correlated directly to this work um be able to pull that data to to know whether or not we have met those and plus the teachers walk around the classroom to listen like Mr Gold did and you know just let us listen to what the rationale behind why we wanted where we got where we're at right so you ask these questions of the students so you know they understand right because we have the Third no that's really good I I really like this um yeah when teachers are walking wake up questioning they're able to differentiate their questions for students um based on where they are and and moving them to the next level so if teachers are doing like they're like a lot of data about students and student learning and what am I doing that well it's like the teachers asking the question not telling them because you know this was asks a question and um Natasha and I will look at each other like you know who's going to answer but you know I I think it's good because you answer what you see or why you got where you're at and that's problem solving and I think that's really great to start the kids so young in math because I know math is one of the hardest for myself even in um grade school going on and to start so young and and to it's more about understanding it not just doing the problem but problem solving is understanding why you got where you're at so I really like this whole method here for student learning yeah and the questioning is key because the teacher isn't telling the student the information they are asking the students the question drawing that learning from no I want to thank you all for the great presentation it was really good and just a couple comments yeah great great presentation thank you for sharing uh this with us and giving us not only a descriptive Glimpse but even giving us the opportunity to experience it ourselves Hands-On kind of along those lines I know I personally for one would even love an opportunity to even get in a classroom and see some of this in action so if something like that could be arranged I know I would love to please on that up we are planning some learning walks very soon so we will absolutely okay I love it I love it thank you any other questions are coming thank you all very much well that then brings us to the next item on our agenda which is 7.0 and specifically excuse me 7.1 adjournment is there a motion to adjourn I'll make a motion to adjourn just for you Adrian a second and just the comments uh just want to again wanna say thank you philanine as we are are signing off here um this again grateful it's been an honor to serve and sit here on the support service but I'm coming to Adrian welcome back all right then we will go ahead and are you all signed in we'll do a vote yeah we'll go online yes so uh Boardman Rodriguez Pena is a yes foreign yes and I ordered Mercury I'm also a yes and so therefore the motion to adjourn passes three yes to two absent and we are formally adorned at 7 10 p.m thank you so much everyone

on the consent agenda at this point statement for clarification on seven see Charlie teaching and learning number one to approve overnight application for the test team to attend the State final have they already do they know they go into the final or what's this it seems to be a long way off I haven't looked into that but I think if we if I remember last winter someone they turned it in late so I think they're they're probably trying to get approved so if they do make it and it's already okay so they probably have an idea that they might get that far so they're thinking ahead okay so this is no guarantee this is not we've just been proactive and doing this and submit the submission of it yeah are we just doing this particular item or are we looking to do that for every sport event or any overnights we submit to you but I'm saying proactive here because there's no guarantee what I'm saying there's no guarantee right right there's no guarantee that the track team is going to make it the state and come May of next year but do we approve that in advance because you know it could be between the board you know what I'm saying if the coach submits it so like if coach Nike would have said hey we think we have a shot going down and it was an overnight thing he might have submitted it a couple weeks ago beginning in the playoffs saying hey the next board meeting might surpass that okay so we can look for similar items to come to the board like this for different sports events or whatever okay all right so but it's no certainty and they might do it differently though it depends on who's submitting right correct okay all right because I'm like wow the test team is really good they already made it to the finals it's just a matter of attending the plans all right well we're going to wish them well all right that's all I have can I got one for you on the financial report there's a about a two million dollar budget variance for purchase services and I couldn't your variance analysis just had some kind of general ledger descriptions of what that was is that like a one-time no that's that's pretty normal because what what happens with that and in fact uh Brian and I said we compared last year's financials to this year's and you can see that same variance because there's a lot of uh purchase service I'll give you an example our liability insurance we pay that in one lump sum and that's kind of what I wanted to know so it's it's kind of a it's a timing issue that we use it's a timing issue you got to play itself out through the years okay you answered my question okay any other questions or comments on the consent agenda okay roll call Brown is an i Dr Hall aye Mrs Galbraith aye Mr sawales aye Mrs Walters aye vice president aye president Albert aye motion call please Mr sawales aye Mrs Walters aye Mrs Galbraith aye Dr Hall aye browners and I vice president aye president Albrecht aye okay next up is old business anyone have any old business I have a couple okay um can somebody where are we standing with the numbering and lettering of our windows and doors in all our schools I'm not going to stop asking this so now we're in trouble with the cold with the windows [Music] we are we're moving forward with the you know renumbering some areas we're uh with numbering areas that weren't numbered like the Interiors are the best build so so both sides of the doors are numbered things like that what about the classroom Windows where are we at when when will be what is our Target take to get them on the classroom windows [Music] okay because they actually go on the inside so I mean we did a lot of them on the outside are numbering yeah because I was told that they're going to fall off the outside okay I I would like to that that this project has been going since Rochelle was here I really like a Target date on this if we can get a generalization please thank you the other thing I have is um when I was visiting the high school last week this one's for you Ken did we hit a snag in in the beginning of the um Edition already the only thing that I know about is there was a delay in getting the rebar that is supposed to be on site here however in place of getting the rebar they started doing the sewer work so they just flip some time frame so the the timing is still on schedule to be done by August okay because there is a betting pool going on over there if it's going to be open that's why I was asking because they're all already talking about it yeah I you know again uh I know they ran into some rebar issues nobody had rebar I'm hearing that there are some concrete issues too that everyone is having difficulty that's real there is an allotment of concrete I do know that that's a real problem so we're we're waiting to see we meet on a weekly basis with the contractor to see where we're at so they they let us know ahead of time about the rebar but then they just went ahead and flipped did some sewer work out there that was scheduled for a little bit later to make up the time so do you think this will affect anything down the road I mean yes we asked the contractor that specifically and it did not now when it comes to concrete it I'll I'll get an answer for that but I will let the board know that if there is going to be any type of delay with this because that's definitely weather related kind of it is it is so you know we haven't hit a hard freeze yet um so we're still okay but again if there's you know a couple week delay in concrete that may delay the project the concrete delay is not the weather pardon me the concrete delay is not the dollar it's probably oh I know that they're saying if there's a hard freeze they may have a difficulty yeah right now it's going to be the weather will be one of the aspects but they're short of right cereals and all that that's right we're good and all of that yes today and he's confident that he'll have his country I mean that's yeah I mean that's him but that's a good sign okay the only old business I had again we had talked before do you have an update on where we're at percentage-wise on the 2022 summer projects I know the delays in the in the equipment and materials but how far along are we I think I think you know if I had a person in general probably about 85 percent right now um we are in the process of doing some testing and balancing at both ELC and Talala I know we had some issues over at talalo with some of the units so I was on site yesterday over there uh and had a little uh meeting with the contractor to solve some things so they're on top of that and they're taking care of that testing they're doing the same thing here at ELC we've got a couple rooms that are issues I do know that the chiller for this building the delivery has been pushed back now until January of course we don't need it now but it's been pushed back till January so that's where we're at with that with this building that's probably the big piece of equipment here I think Keith we have all the rooftop yard to use they're all in I mean we have them on site yeah we have all the rtus on site here so things like to give you you know like the one over in Special Ed is going to be replaced we haven't taken the old one out yet but that's going to be replaced soon so they'll be moving out they're going to be going into 37 we're just moving some people around so to get that done over at Balmoral I know the tanks have been it was those two big tanks had to be relocated that's been done they're doing the piping there I think we're switching out some door over there too and some locks so those type of things I'm just thinking Crete the delivery on the elevator should be in December I'm looking at Keith just to make sure I'm telling given the right information so I'm sure you said yeah and then that will be installed the rest of that area is pretty well done it's just really the uh elevator we've made a decision in all honesty not to occupy that area until the elevator is in just because that's a big piece of equipment um and elevator guys you know if they're listening they get a little finicky uh so I just want to make sure that's clear so that they can get their work done in that um and then uh who am I missing in their Creek CSK is in pretty good shape um and I think uh they just gotta I think I think maybe one rooftop unit or something like that but they're in pretty good shape until I was done talale is done except for testing and balancing right now so so our Chiller is on site there too so so now that we approve these three contracts tonight are they going to order all the equipment now there's part of the deal uh with them that they had a good shot draws in um so we just met with them last week actually already prior to the approval um and that has been they've already contacted their contractors and begun ordering things uh I said them I was pretty sure the board was going to approve this so go and so they did okay yes good thanks any other old business um yeah I guess oh dog just uh can this is for you okay how do you you don't have to have the answer here for this but the board I know specifically I did requested that the general contractor seek minority contractors female minority contractors or local contractors to be part of this project I don't know if you can share it to something tonight or next I'll put in FYI or our next meeting just kind of see where we are with that sure I can ensure that these are the next meeting or the FYI either way Mr Brown sure I don't try to put you up on the gun gun to see exactly but if you could yeah just so you know as I think I've stated this before there is in our bid documents a recommendation that 30 of the work is by local and or minority contractors so uh they do have to submit minority what I call minority reports sure okay so we have those and so I can share some of those things in the FYI with you too excellent sure okay and kudos for the Marquis out there at the various schools thumbs up on that okay but that was a good turnaround good uh you made things happen I really appreciate it I just it just does well to my heart to drive past the schools and I can't read everything unless 1.2 miles per hour but nonetheless is up there and obis is going to Lyle about do you know where we are as far as obtaining any minority teachers this school year I know you was kind of waiting to see what things happened you know we'll have that data for you probably in the next week or so okay yeah I appreciate it that is all I have for all business um mine is are we do we have and I know we've kind of talked I just want the public to hear because the updates from last week with the possible projects with the middle school and the stadium and things of that nature so uh where we're at we're hoping to have uh an update at the committee of the home for December uh what we're looking to do is go out to the middle school with our Architects to see what other kinds of classroom spaces that we can secure we're going to be talking with teachers that are on carts taking a look looking at a classroom situation talking with staff out there so we are going to be doing that in the next right probably after uh next week and we'll have something a little bit more definitive coming back in December I know it's important to the board to get some answers to decide where we're going with this and we understand that so we'll be working on that are you going to be looking at the programming at the middle school to make sure that that's exactly what they need you know what I'm saying whatever you guys find are you going to look at that to see if do they need two four six eight like whatever the number of classrooms I mean we should allow make sure that the programming dictates that right I would I would assume correct that whatever the needs are over there and I I I I agree because I mean just from knowing scheduling myself I mean I don't want a classroom with 10 kids when just because we're trying to save somebody um since it's been open now let's see what are we efficiently using the space that we have do we have the the space within to uh to current keep going with what we have because I mean at the end of the day we do have like she said 100 less kids than when we were going to build the first four but when they were talking about building four classrooms than it went from you know four to six eight possibly 12 classrooms yeah we'll be looking at enrollment for classroom sizes as well okay yeah because I think at the one presentation Ken had brought up was that they if they added 10 they netted eight for 9.9 million dollars now we're talking about adding 4 for 3.6 I think is the programming will tell us what do they actually need there do they need four classrooms five six eight something like that and then we'll just look to make sure scheduling wise we're not having classes that Could Happen could still have more students correct uh can I take any other old business yeah I would like to just uh again this is all business and forgive me for not bringing it up and this is a compliment to you again and your staff Dr coughliness the grading out there where they've done was in the old Sixth Grade Center was you get you guys did at least from street level seeing you guys did a good job and you got the seats in and all of that you hydroseed it yes it was hydroseeded that so thank you Mr Brown yeah I I do anything so okay because you made a Believer out of it well the contractor did a really good job because I think the mayor the mayor kind of had a complaint on it he had a concern tonight and I actually drove past I said you guys are not going to get this in this year but you made it happen it looks well and overall to me Keith you're doing a good job with the just with the schools The Cutting trimming and all of that really I'm really proud to go past these schools and look at again from the street level looks good okay all right old business metal detectors do we have any updates on that did you put in our FYI it was okay that's on me I'll go back and look at it no I have to repeat that thanks thanks BP any other old business any new business okay we do have a need for closed session tonight can I get a motion to go into closed session for the purpose of the appointment employment compensation discipline performance or dismissal of specific employees moved second roll call Brown is an eye Mrs Galbraith Dr Hall aye Mr sawales aye Mrs Walters aye vice president aye president Albrecht aye we are in closed session and call it 7 59. and uh we'll have no other business once we come out a closed session the only thing we'll have is adjournment so we'll cut off the video feed

met so whether it's engaging in academic activities prior to games and practices they can still find like they're having balance in their life and we can sort of promote time management to for our students right now 1.99 foreign dietary prescription allergy specific food preferences foreign menu selections and plans to send out a survey to all students during the school year to kind of get their opinion on what they like offered for more variety 2.4.1 talks about studying our preschool programs to Communications thriving and that is well underway with um studying our musical programs our enrollments our members our location is well underway and we'd be fun to keep the school for going to be a prize for the winter and those are a larger update there foreign drawing in new families and getting them involved in some of our organizations and committees and some of their volunteer workers thinking about ways that we can make a phone call send a letter to them invite them to come to a meeting for an event knowing who those members are in the community and not leaving them being isolated do not feel welcome to come in so we're looking for a way to to get those people involved to make them feel welcome to part of the community maybe as soon as I'm a brochures something something and I think working with pto's in particular is a wonderful way to do that keeping an eye on who of course um 2.6 is around the growing number of Corporations and businesses in our area can you do for us since you're here [Music] lots of funding but we don't ask they're not going to say here you go there's a hundred thousand dollars to do something I think we have to get there talk to them supporting us financially or even being part of our internships and shadowing programs in the coming years one of our community members and is his company employees as a member of our students and also right after school so we're grateful [Music] Ness thank you our next area is technology and our technology objectives to advance technology in our schools for the safety functionality and effectiveness of all systems to continuously add maintain and replace tools and platforms and using ever-changing technological advancements in education and Beyond to ensure that all of our students have access to the necessary devices and connectivity to effectively perform tasks requiring technological support um 3.1 the goal is to hand maintain replace tools and Platforms in each of our schools so that online programming are effectively for instructional practices assessment and student responses 3.1.1 and 12.2 is the budgeting for purchasing and a subscription to typing.com for our elementary schools prior to covid we spent a lot of time training analyzed by Elementary School students it's so poorly the essay proportion above empty gas test long time viewers of this fabulous people Republicans about especially their inability to do the conventions um it was perplexing to me how they could do so poorly because I've seen them right during a meeting earlier this year we were looking at the actual stamp samples of students test Whiting responses and one teacher pointed out what should have probably been an obvious to everybody which is an elementary school students don't have a keyboarding experience to know how to make capital letters right it was like a dog so we are going to teach them how to effectively use the keyboard with more than one because they're holding this is Sally you think okay the 3.13 um forms these are platforms used in um science classes on a regular basis chemistry physics and AP biology they are used on a regular basis they simulate real life science applications foreign [Music] students interested in majoring in Sciences or working in the science field would be working with such platforms eventually so this exposure um And in regards to items 3.15 and 3.16 we currently only have one 3D printer which is considered insufficient for course use two additional printers would allow integration of the 3D printing device available for multiple Technology and Engineering courses in the middle and high school levels Meridian printing provides a way to incorporate career World technology into the classroom which is vital as we're working towards ensuring our students have hard skills in the curriculum that can be applied outside the classroom additionally 3D printing enhances the understanding of the Technology and Engineering Process through prototyping and development of work or workflows which allows students to actively engage in real world problems solving and currently courses that use 3D printers is 8th grade technology CAD robotics 3D design and Engineering in the future I'm also looking for budgeting and purchasing a three-year subscription to gizmos which is a vital lab platform that develops real life study cases at different grade levels and helps students make real world connections and then for items 3.11 and 3.112 a computer numerical control device would allow communication between computers and the tools we use in our graphic design and 3D courses so right now Tools in our workshop and 3D classes would be able to communicate to one another to the classroom computers I want to go back just a moment to 3.19 this is of course it doesn't often get a lot of attention okay the initial investment is given to them over five years ago the equipment for this program is of course is application I spoke with Jeremiah Gallant he's a department chair he has one segment of middle school music statements of high school music technology these funds would allow them to upgrade all all 18 workstations in this room which would give the music for the maximum amount of possibly 54 students in every year um this also has been started in 2015 and since then 88 7th graders and 92 high school students have taken this course 14 high schoolers took this course from covert because I found amazing and of that group that took people this particular course nine to Hunter graduates thus far have gone on to study the field of audio production at college so um goal 3.2 just to ensure that all of our students are performed on devices at home by creating an initial three-year technology replacement plan in the subsequent five-year replacement plan what it says so as you see the items in 3.2 I mean it's a long list of items three-point 221 but the bottom line is to replace devices but also infrastructure the networking infrastructure to support those devices eventually have um this year um yeah uh so I also um have 3.3 um goal 3.3 technology can start to create open lines of communication between District staff students and families most of 3.3 evolves around again Communications with families and the detecting any of our forms these upgrades will hopefully um easier as well as making it more efficient thank you page 29.
