and lastly to add to the special education to reserve funds at tejanto for our rising cost of our audit districts deposit a 10 000 annually effective in our invisible year 24 budget foreign one of the things I don't know about when I previously talked about stabilizing that that fund so that wouldn't so that we're not doing that I guess word I guess it is I'm deficit because one of mgm's budget that's actually perhaps the things so tomorrow at the legend and I agent saying that you use school choice funds to meet the flight to fulfill this budget so I guess I know historically yes [Music] is by reducing that then we're no longer going to hang out with those funds coming in between the students is that is [Music] nothing really referring to is what typically happened has been happening to all the schools we take and you know taken this we spend this enough because and the idea is to reduce that including and charge the access to the general fund and I think Ace's point was that because the general fund has been undefined by the town his Reliance on school choice was too high so it would be drain him off more than we took in so in that and you know school choice is usually an emergency fund s and not many things it is not there you have no cushion so um I think that's a relationship money the way I built the budget is I applied 25 000 less of an allocation from school choice in using more of the general budget funds so nothing's being cut um it's just it's coming from a different pocket okay I guess it's pretty much it was just 25 000 it's not coming from the school choice so I guess my concern is best seemed underfunded and so by reducing this that is not hurting okay it's just saving money later that's just what my mechanical decision we're looking to increase I think it's also something we wanted the other problem we have is our schools are our communities are growing we don't have a lot of space we have to stop rely on because we can't necessarily take them back but you've made a good point I understand yeah stopping that which I understand of building and stuff I just want to make sure that the others will come through somewhere so the next section is my favorite part um is the financial impact that this whole plan has so what I've done is I've broken this up four sections that we've gone over in my school so you can see the first funnels Berlin second to Boylston there it is Toronto so the first on the top left is Berlin Memorial and it's her Personnel so you can see I added all the Personnel that was just same with the forest and Elementary in Toronto I'm not going to go through them all because we already discussed them all but if anyone has any questions please jump out and let me know I did add in benefits for the Personnel because that's going to affect it as well for the teaching and learning everything we discussed is adding added in there obviously with the dollar figures um technology the same Finance the school choice we just discussed and then they're all totaled so the bottom line the total preferred land for the financial impact is 302 000. the total Corporal system is just about 1 million in Toronto is 1.2 if anyone has anything questions the total the total budget was around 20 million so this is always it's more than five percent I think so well I built the 24 budget so I have you know very rough numbers I didn't do a few perfectly for a minute I think I actually do have it deserves so I don't have the exact numbers because I did it for about a level service comparison but we have other items that I added into it that aren't part of this plan okay so I don't have it broken out just from this plan I can give it to you with the other items added so let's see maybe I've misreading this the headings didn't carry over so I read them again so when you're at like 2.5 so so I was thinking yeah so here's a good example and for Less last year the above level service was 16 960 .

just this plan itself you're at 300. in Boylston last year the above level service request was 59 585 dollars this is one million to Hanto the above level service request was 102 188 and this is about an idea we also have to consider practices this is in the plan right because the level service which kind of represent uh six percent so extra 20 seconds so Nancy are all of these the numbers you've added in here these are all for 24 only everything so all the stuff that's out you didn't add it in it looked like most of the stuff I know I know it was to be in the next fiscal year yeah because I I guess in the district so yeah so it would be a big ask for this year over last year over previous years and there's a big need at the time and and yes at the beginning yeah well last year for Bes I mean that's a huge difference you said we got 59 000 was what we budgeted for the above level services and this year we're breaking it because the budget's not final yet it hasn't been approved but we're looking at over a million dollars so it's just a huge swings everyone's behind about 1.2 million last year with 125.

and this doesn't even coverage all right this is just what's in the plan yeah Jeff's Point yep exactly okay now this was great yeah we're at you know for things like technology yeah that's the other sorry that's the other thing that you can to keep in mind some of these figures that are in here are in the capital budget or not they won't all be in the general budget right the page back and foreign [Music] orbit I like that we're putting this out there and just saying here's what we need and and not pull me back I think so I appreciate this this is really helpful and I appreciate the explanations as to why we need these other pieces it really tells a story thank you this is our team we put this together so thank you to everybody who contributed to this and I've concluded our presentation if you have any questions going forward if you have a chance to look at this further just contact us dancing with Jeff um can I ask one question will this go out to the community and then making your feedback it should absolutely we haven't talked about that next step um it's going to be part of certainly part of our budget conversations I would I did a meeting with the principals tomorrow I would like them to have this conversation and share this afternoon so that would be the next step to this and as far as the community thank you any other comments thanks Carol um you know the easy part is over um I know that came along with the first drafted tonight as well so thanks um one question I know you mentioned a lot about Athletics I didn't catch a lot on the Arts music about the language specifically but I know dude Jeremiah is already talking about putting a musical together yeah yeah they're already they're already thinking about these things so you know we're getting some things especially if we can offered that third of us to remember three days of the bus to begin for after school activities I will give more students I know Jeremiah and spoke about I'm doing some more package tool with different students and faculty and commented as well very excited too but yeah uh okay I guess moving on your business now uh of course I had a motion to approve the determination of our existing contract and compare law offices I said for any discussions all right these or no all right motions improve the termination of our existing contract from Pure law offices of passes if you have a motion to approve the equipment of the United law as a district councilman over here because my children love through the school district 24 years ago just graduate hours this year during my son came through the district through the agree um um I can't say enough good things about this school district she's still here like AP classes were very good for her to get the credits she was really well in college they do a wonderful job for family students here excellent job with my daughter I know math is like a Bugaboo but it's a Distillery so it's really nice to be able to be here capacity so thank you if you have questions since I started practicing in 1989 so it's been a long journey my undergraduate came across from Boston College Law School and one little interesting sort of diversion in my career after a few years of working in Boston exclusively officers so I was a lawyer from now on the tribe for five years very different Pharmacy so yeah so different that very very different capacity other than that a pretty traditional track of of working on management side so representing employers always Municipal clients have a sector clients from nonprofits um this is Amy had worked for a prior client of mine and while we didn't necessarily interact I mean I'm sure you knew I existed as well as I did you and we never heard anything bad so that was good here you know the less you hear the better agency in mind the best so um yeah and I I think what I like to do with my clients is I really I want to educate clients so that they know what they're doing they know why they're doing it and then they can do it now I'm not saying that I don't want to be involved I do but the more that you know about how your role operates here the better it is for you the better you can be I'd like to to save my life be the best they can the biggest compliment I get from any client is when they say you know what Kim you did a great job because you taught us how to do what and I was reading earlier that they were one of those I always feel good about it because I feel like they've learned something from me it's my responsibility is to help them understand how to do the best they can in you know what their responsibilities are with their electrical enforce their employees okay thank you thank you thank you all in favor well I want you to improve the equation of America called attorneys at law as Didier Council passes the population to approve changes to policy jic of the bullying intervention I'll second Laurie this question is prevention and intervention plan um foreign [Music] so I think that's something you'd like to see things like that so really quiet as well most recruit the changes the jscfd bullying prevention policy capacities IMD has been instructing the agenda after the world maps travel motion to accept donation in the amount of 2850 from the policy family I'm sorry if I said that wrong to be used for expenses or activities for the class of 2027.

Julie yes discussion thank you yeah uh all in favor aye aye as well motion to accept the donations of 2850 from the colossian family to be used for expenses activities for class of 2027 classes about motion to accept the donation of next robotics equipment from Ellie Lynn to the House of Engineering Department Theory yes special all in favor of the community Department do they use the passes about a motion to approve the creation of the chess club game group and game group and auto quality to Hunter Regional Middle High School so worries I heard thank you discussion um all right yeah so uh good evening reminders um so I'm here to seek the committee is available for funding for the automotive club uh Arizona um there are three aspects that I think that I think the tacos Community could be benefited from this book uh personally there's an immense academic component to the automotive industry including the science behind the car's work and the functionality of them to the science of how they interact with their environment um how the environment can in turn and interact with them um secondly I think there's a large social aspect to the automotive world and that can in the represented in debate form these debates to have offenders of this effective Club understand the benefits and downsides of vehicle characteristics to be better informed about topics within a larger community and then lastly there's also an opportunity for a community of at least a dozen students to come together and discuss how many interesting Automotive world I've been trying for at like almost a year at this point working with my co-president but my co-president when I would be working trying to come up with a plan for this club and really make sure that we got everything ready and uh I'm really hoping to see it guys awesome thank you so um our plans are we like probably weekly uh our clients will do it after school style meeting with a photo of an Appalachian being that way we can have our meetings extend a little bit longer I have a little bit more discussion time or we're working on a project we have more time for that um I was hoping to do what makes interesting before so after school you know the advisors this is something you guys came up with [Music] and I have friends of mine who were also super interested in uh we all kind of wanted the space to be able to really talk about that um formatted discussion and get a chance to work on cars and stuff um actually presented the idea of working with acidet and potentially getting reliability waivers so that way you can have an intake of community members cars that we could work on um and it would only be simple stuff like an oil change brake pads um but it it'd be a really good opportunity for us to uh you know get the hands-on experience because I mean I personally want to go without a field for a career there's the kind of colleges I'm applying to this year and I feel like that hands-on experience it's something that can be really fundamental and helpful for people who are engaged for students um creation of Chess book gang group and Auto Club of Toronto Regional Middle High School passes throughout the motion to add additional sites into Unity National Honor Society a second yeah all in favor hi hello is that it is a donation um foreign [Music] is all in favor aye um purchased additional instructional audio systems in relationship a discussion all in favor aye hello elementary school PTO purchase the instructional audio systems and budget passes the rest of the items here are the first three does anyone have any questions on the first week so Jessica maybe you have a question on jic student discipline and I believe you're asking your ask questioning the perfect portion that was taken out yeah so there was you know the updated Grace yep um but then there's a large challenge uh surrounding the circumstances regarding suspensions and expulsions so I think and perhaps I don't know if um I believe they're taking that out because the way it reads is that you would get an expulsion if you did these things and the way that they're doing it now from my understanding is that there's a meeting of parents um the red part that was added in is that there's going to be a determination you'll actually be kind of like a hearing rather than an automatic boom you're done so that was my understanding but that is a good question because we start going through the list you're like why would they want to get rid of those things yeah I just even go to a little rather Brave and yeah but that's and I had to go through it a couple times to remember why yeah the questions the only thing I want to make a note of is um policy jfb remember when I get our meeting it was jfpb and jfbi there's two of them one of them speaks we have to adopt um we have to decide a program.jfb or jfdbi one of them is more school choice one of them is again we currently do jfpb and that's why we put it in here yeah yeah the policy effect is that we do useful Choice correct yeah the other one the other option is leave by default do not use cultures okay um [Music] ACR is not on there and it's because R stands that's a good question it is in the list though like you probably saw it in the policy list um we discussed that at our policy meeting we were curious why we could find it in our actual policy manual just because the r stands for regulations um Christy has a book of regulations yeah we were confused about that as well okay but there's there is it um it's it's AC I believe it's AC he did it last time it's a different one it was a vote last minute it might be a cat or something like that it was worked on extensively oh yeah the attorney even made it home yeah um like in terms of like two Avenues to report like um so like I guess there's a question of if someone is the offended party and they're the reporting are there two athletes to report sexual harassment to avoid that situation I'm not sure dude yeah so so say a person is the person who reports sexual harassment to if that a person is the person who is the sexual harassment is there a b person thank you all right uh could I have a motion to enter executive session in words of conduct negotiations with non-using Personnel superintendent defending return to Golden session so sorry um Megan hi Jess thank you

people here so we're going to see everything there has been adequate notice of this meeting provided by the Board of Education June 20 22 notice in the co-star setting for the date time in place of this meeting similar notice has been posted in the town hall the Brielle School website and the borough clerk has been notified Mr Becker present president here Mr Melanson this is Reed here Mr Vitale Mr Waltman here and if we can all stand with the flag of the United States foreign meeting yes Mrs Jones yes Dr label yes yes the presentations thank you you know my prediction for tonight's meeting and I'm wrong was that we were going to have the girls soccer team and the boys soccer team with us here tonight so I was wrong girl power this year tonight I just want to tell you I'll tell you a little bit because some of them could be watching you right now from home you know the boys went two years undefeated undefeated unbelievable two years undefeated they went into the five semi-finals very confident because the next day after the loss I talked to almost every boy on the team and said tell me really what happened and they were very honest overconfident we thought we had this game because we beat this team we knew we were going to be in the championship we knew we were going to win the championship and the other team wanted it more and they beat us and they beat us fair and that's from the boys I was like you know I'm glad you're saying that learn your lesson because as you move forward eighth graders or even sixth and seventh graders learn your lesson because never be overconfident anytime the girl's story is different the girls are here tonight and I'm telling you when they run I got in my car and I cried for them because here's what happened to them they had a tough season they played their hearts out but they lost they lost to a really really good team same cabinets first time they lost that home it was so close the game was ours we lost they played their hearts out they said we got them next time we go to Orchard Park they didn't play their hearts out but they played strong we lost now we have to go into the finals and these girls are so determined we know we're good we are such a good team and I see this with them in the classrooms I see with them in the hallways they are leaders in our school and they went to that championship game after let me say we did a pep rally outside and I don't know if it was the pep rally I think it was the girls I know it's your coach but we did a pep rally outside we had old six seventh graders outside and we really thought come on Brielle bring full trophies home you heard the boy's Story the girls show up for a game and the whole time every minute of the game they played their hearts out they played their hearts out I what witness as your parents witness and all the fans that were there because I think every kid wrote their life to the game right it was hundreds of kids at the game and we've had banners and everything the girls just came playing their hearts out the game ends at a time I don't like that over time double overtime for those of you who know soccer you know what happens after double overtime the thing I hate the most because last year some of these young ladies had this happen to them at Spring Lake Heights double overtime you go into penalty kids and you know I don't like that part of soccer I'm sorry penalty kicks it comes down to penance of kids I don't want my daughter to be the goalie right I don't mind and I don't want my daughter to be the kicker because everybody's looking at you like everyone's waiting for you to do it for the team and Brielle did it for the team with penalty kicks last year they lost by one in penalty kicks this year they were so determined so strong so United as a team that they did it this year for our school so coach cardamom please come up here because I know [Applause] she always wants a debrief with me because if I miss a game she wants to tell me about it she loves you and you love her so much and you do a lot for your coach but she loves you and adores you but this win was so important for our school it taught everybody a lesson and you know what the boys most of them were all at that game our school was there and they were very proud that you put on this trophy for us so coach I know you want to say a few other things we have a certificate for everyone but so yes this was a very well deserved win I can't tell you how proud of this group of girls I am for not only their commitment to one another but also to the game of soccer um they gave it their all and as Mrs Carlson said we facing Catherine's in regular season twice uh losing to them both times which for some I might be a deterrent but not for this group of young ladies so they went in determined right to prove themselves on the field and that's exactly what they did and um after seven penalty case which is the game of soccer after five is a lot but then to go sudden death is uh it takes really mental toughness and that's exactly what they displayed each and every game so girls thank you for such a memorable and rewarding season and you should be so proud of what you did not only for this team but also for the school because I have to say the support that we received not only from teachers Administration parents but fellow students was remarkable and thank you [Applause] foreign [Music] to have students and parents here when we do great things and tonight that's what we're celebrating uh your greatness so we're going to ask you to come up we're going to have our players and we're also um do we have our great school campus here today I see her in her in her crutches racing in her crutches but when we call you up stay up here because I know your parents are going to want to take pictures uh Peyton Madness Eastman [Applause] I say that Cassidy was along that sealed it for us should I say that [Applause] Marie Gonzalez [Applause] gross healing we're in Holly Kelsey Columbus [Applause] foreign [Applause] foreign [Applause] there you have it the 22 class of 23 soccer champions for this year [Applause] and now girls your coach was telling me that you told them her today that you have a lot of homework and setting to do I told her the board meeting will only go about two hours that if you want to stay and learn about government you can stay but if Hallmark is more important to you and your parents have things to do you may leave but know that we're very proud of you okay congratulations effects so at this point we'll continue with visitors business visitors are permitted to comment on agenda Heights foreign [Music] so we'll move on to committee reports District Operations today discussed a couple of things we took a look at the tentative surpluses and um but um looks like we're making some Headway in in Saving enough money that our company reserved to ultimately this needs to be done for the next day five years just the status the status from the status of the media center okay still can't locate the cause of the week of the moisture the architecture is going to be pricing now it's a pretty expensive equipment to try and locate that I I forget the terminals um what's going on what's going to try and use some cameras to put the cameras down the train to see what's up cracks in the drain pipes us unfortunately don't have a resolution we don't necessarily know the timing customer medication as to when that question is start Ed putting out her face [Music] do you have a sense for how much that we are costs I thank you [Music] actually [Music] we have we have to find a source [Music] so we didn't discuss it in the ground hydrating radar aspect of this is supposed to be drill into your cameras when we initially talk about these projects you guys enter to begin with the question was could they investigate that nowhere right so the Brown Line attorney great argumentative the floor company that was there yeah no I know I understand but before we did that we're going to go to the Crown Country radar okay radar straight [Music] find your corner and today the secrets of the other things that's where the groundhog um do you have a question on item D2 which is the commercial disc operations so this is on the self-assessment it's going to come up in the community meet a year I just had a question [Applause] uh element five c letter c says that we only got two out of three the only two you only have this and that is that we're supposed to have this taking School climate team I mean at least two times per school year is there a reason why we didn't do that I'm sorry this is the self self full self-assessment for becoming grades under the anti-bullying Bill of Rights and this on the agenda inside the anti-bullying side to self-assessment is four elements of the five indicator C um could you repeat the question why did we not eat at least two times per school year Bruce can be scored two out of three there maybe we can get that as follows yes I see some person will just get involved so much um last night relatively short by Madison point standards parts of the meeting was a presentation of the of the referendum that's going to be voted on the 24th of January and if it's a 13.7 million dollar referendum um and 17 is the is the high school um what's included in the high school um then who was going to be renovated and operated boys and girls a lot the last time the boys and girls were like um the last time those rules have been updated 1961.

um this Duncan eye Mr Hopkins hi Mr Cruiser all right this Robinson hi um indivisible [Music] Warriors Mr Mr Mr Hopkins and Ms Duncan Miss Robertson and Mr curtnerage is wanted to make a few quick announcements then I'll give an update I believe you all have a hard copy and uh correct me if I'm wrong Angelina we also put for the governing board to see on board docs uh yes before I give my 100 day Plan update I wanted to give a few other um uh I first spoke to Mr Hopkins the last Thursday about it and I wanted you to give an update to all the board um we have planned a December 3rd and ausd beautification volunteer project we have set 8 AM to 11 A.M um uh Coach Q a color coach coach and I have been uh popular in the last few weeks just how to get something started and so we did a little walk through today of of the uh the gym and the area just uh Easton again just trying to focus on what we can what we can hit what we can Target to get to get started and so we've also been planning and talking about um recruiting volunteers having a liability release forms available as well it's going to be on a Saturday focusing on on just volunteers just adults at this time it's the first time we're doing something like this um and we really wanted to just to try and get a good idea of doing by doing a walk through today of what areas we can Target some ideas in mind just wanted to share that with you uh we're both excited we also going to work on on uh on sharing this information with the community with the staff also how we can share this information and see if we can get some people from throughout the community here it's going to be Saturday uh December 3rd 8 A.M to 11 A.M so put that on your calendar after you have your cup of coffee in the morning you're welcome to come over and pick up a rake and a shovel and it's our first time doing it so we wanted to see a we're very excited about it and I think she uh you know if she if she really was taking ownership of wanted to just beautify the gym so we think that's great Dr shaboltz and I and so we're talking about some other news that's this business focus on an area so when people come over we start right here in this area and then we can just see how it goes but that's just happy information and also uh like Miss Duncan I had product a few the other day uh from your comments about how we can get out some of the information more and uh into today's copper news there's a real good write-up that really broke down pretty much when Mr Casey was talking about and it showed all the the areas for employment but also where we need to do better so it was really good it really went into detail off of his uh his great presentation um I really like how it highlighted uh the partnership with Beyond textbooks so we've got to create professional developments with Beyond textbooks you need to do three more so this is a plus but it also broke down the letter grade and where we need to get that at the high school and the KA level so that being said uh you have you have in front of you uh you have in front of you uh a breakdown of 100 day Plan update I'm not going to read the days and then the goals but I have them there for you just to reference so I'm going to highlight several key uh key areas I really want to highlight um we really turned our focus in quarter towards we had all of our staff once we finally had all of our staff with us we really focused our office schools leadership team Dr shabok's Masada Mr Casey and I we would have our our almost on a weekly basis our meetings here in the board of conference room and we would have them even before we got our letter grades just changing our completely going through a transformation whether professional development and the focus turning to data so we really started to just have really in-depth targeted strategic data driven decision-making conversation so I'm just gonna I'm gonna highlight the PDS on October 26th you can see it's a follow-up to our October October 11th author School leadership team meeting where we started talking more and more openly about division and mission statement for for aqua Unified the data analysis uh looking at the data we had the Arizona academic State assessment measures of academic progress also the azella assessments the Arizona English language learner assessment so I want to really highlight that with you because if you remember from the presentation on Monday our 9 to 12 our high school had 46 points and of the ell there's 10 points we had five so if everything else stays the same but if we can get three more points on ell proficiency and growth we go to the Sea right there so so that's why I wanted to highlight the Zella that's why we were talking about it more and more in our in our conversation in our professional developments we're being a little more strategic as well just with uh Dr chapels and Mr Casey myself for taking different grade levels just trying to differentiate we share with our staff to differentiate the instruction of the students we need to model the same as Leaders with our staff and so um that's what focus on October 26th I want to highlight characteristics of effective leadership we started to have those conversations with our all of our staff and our groups um Mr Casey and I with our Pre-K six teachers and some resource teachers Dr shabolta Mr case and Minnesota Cohen had seventh and 12th grade and resource teachers because research teachers play a critical role as well so we wanted to get feedback on the characteristics of effective leadership gave us that feedback we're going to have that set up in our offices we're going to get that set up put that in the frame for us to use as a guidance problem just as we go through this transformation and develop re-establishing our vision our mission statement and moving forward uh go to the to the next page page two uh one of the Highlight October 30th uh it was on a Sunday but it was very productive part of the superintendent collaborative Network that I that I belonged to we met in Tucson on Sunday October 30th and just going over our 100 game plans with other first year superintendent so just wait for me to see other first year superintendents we met with our mentors and so just getting that feedback of what we're doing well where we can get there you see on November 1st once again we had a long schools leadership team where we talked in depth about Korean intervention quarterly reading intervention screeners reading interventionists we do have one advertised at this time and then this gave us a very critical update on mulano and reading so we're having a our professional development with staff but also as a leadership team the focus has really turned into Data analysis more and more just to really dig deeper in the data of I also wanted before I go into the next PD that we planned for November 1st if you see on November 2nd and November 3rd we had back to that apparent meetings which is very we felt very positive and productive the first one was with uh parents and classroom parent group that is led by Miss Montana Wallace and we've got to hear from a number of parents just on what they what they their expectations are facilities facilities improvements how would you make things look real good outside at the school very uh and just very Salient points it really just gave us a good input and and so how they can also help us get the word out more the communication we shared with them that we previously on Facebook we sent email but they're talking about applications what kind of communication apps we can also try and get you know try and work with them on the same page so that was very productive in addition to the school safety meeting November 3rd we have some community members and attendance uh just to get some some input from different different throughout the community you see some of the people there that that that are listed there a few include Deputy Lozano and fire chief Tibbett so um just good conversations giving updates on some of the threat assessment training that we're receiving and also an additional security measures that we're taking want to highlight of November uh eighth and 9th as you can see the leadership team and the professional development we change it up a little bit as far as you know how we're still working with pre-k6 here and Dr shiples Middle School in high school but this time of this one this article was a great Mr Casey goes with him and we had to focus on on the areas with each with each level of where we can improve and his group focused on the English learner debt the proficiency levels targeting again the next five of ten points if we get those three or four we're already at a c in addition to if we show both in other areas of our group here we targeted as you can see of the data from a data analysis aasa the map the quotery assessment to Zella and the reading assessments but we really wanted to focus on was in our pre-k6 group was identifying 10 students in every class who came here to six also our research teachers coaches we also wanted our resource teachers to identify to go for mentally proficient to partially coefficient because on the gay side our strength was growth 30 out of 50.

cards from the kids that's I think it's board member appreciation day so this is the one day of the year that anybody appreciates us probably so so we thank them very much for that move right on to our agenda items the first is our consent agenda Mr great if you'd walk us through that please yeah um all of our reports as they normally are we've got some resignations namely a cook and a volleyball coach we still have vacancies for paraprofessionals and for a volleyball coach um and then we've got two non-certified class advancements so our drivers get paid after years of service and so they get to move to the higher rate so that's good for them um nothing of the only big importance there Personnel issues are down because of it being November so Administration recommends the board approved the consent agenda is presented perfect any questions discussions concerns they would like to make a motion to approve the consent agenda as presented I'll make that motion thank you Scott throw your second I'll second Ary seconds a roll call please yeah perfect thank you very much all right items seven is our Communications report and presentations uh enrollment report is in the packet will then go on to our Minister unless anybody any questions on those we've gone to our administrative reports and we'll start with our building report hi that's Tom Miller for all of the board members I believe this one wasn't here before so thank you very much for having us here we have had an exciting start to this school year we're rocking and rolling with bringing back fun and memories and projects and Hands-On activities and yeah first so in October we decided to do some fun pumpkin decorating contests and because we had a new Facebook page we wanted to encourage parents to make sure that they're going to the correct one and Miss land graphs out of this world pumpkin received the most likes on our Facebook page miss spivey's a hot air balloon pumpkin was the one that the staff had voted or staff members had voted for from central office and anybody that did not have an advisory and then on the bottom is Miss Haven's pumpkin that's followed the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory theme but the kids really love that they love being able to dress up this year they were super excited to do that and and there we are as office team as Hocus Pocus having some fun so the month of October was a memorable one and they really appreciated being able to do all those extra fun things they were very creative every single pumpkin so if you haven't been able to go back and look at our Facebook page there was 30 of them that were spectacular I don't know how I could have chose that but they did the next group on the left it was Miss atwell's class their Spanish B Class created sugar skulls and they invited Mr Elliott and myself to come and make one so we had a competition as to which which sugar school the kids liked more I won and then and then the Spanish a made flowers and they were really proud of those and then miss Alexander is going to talk about things that were happening in the fifth grade I'm Becky Alexander I do teach fifth grade you can see on the top some pictures of our chocolate party our first novel of the year is Charlie and the Chocolate party so our Chocolate Factory so we always have a party at the end and watch the movie and they get to go through a buffet line with a chocolate fountain and we you know enjoyed that we asked them all not to be like Augustus Gloop and make themselves sick but they um they do a really good job and they have a lot of fun I have notes for the bottom because at the bottom are science classes science is not my thing I taught it the first year I was at the middle school and moved to math and have been happy ever since but the science lab that they are doing in the bottom pictures is chemical changes and Metric measuring so they were measuring the distance a cap shot off of a film canister so they're using measuring tapes water and Alka-Seltzer so they love to go outside anytime they can make something explode like that they did some experiments at home similar to that with Alka-Seltzer and soda is that right and Mentos and soda Mentos and sodas so they love that kind of stuff and the fifth grade science teachers especially would like to thank and recognize that the PTA has given them the grant again this year for their fifth grade stargazing night so I think they've done it two years now this will be the third year so it's a really a big deal and the kids love it so they wanted to acknowledge and thank the PT is that what night is that what night is that I missed it last time yes we will make sure that you know the date there were a lot of pictures submitted from um teachers and we have so many at any day you can come into the classrooms and see all the great activities that all of the grades are doing Escape rooms and projects and it's a really great place to come visit so our next one the community really reached out and thanked us for bringing back the Veterans Day breakfast and ceremony our basketball girls helped clean up the tables and serve our community members we had over 125 veterans 236 students I mean total between the students and the veterans there that day on the entire staff pitched in to help from parking to serving to creating the missing man table it was just a really great day Kim Johnson's sister Kelly McCoy came in and was our guest speaker and yeah the the kids all were wonderful they dressed in red white and blue and the staff clapped as every veteran came in my dad came in hold my hand so we we had a great time and so it's nice to be able to get back to some normalcy and do things like that for the community thank you very much thank you a lot going on and the next Stars assistant superintendent's report um so just a couple shout outs I want to start with um I'm going to start with the top left picture um it's from Eagleview so Kristen and Aaron are both our speech language Pathologists and they um I believe started last year but with our younger students at Eagleview um they did I don't know if you've ever seen like the touch pads we have a larger one at the playground over there so that students that have are non-verbal can communicate with other students so they actually created um bracelets or they were on their trick-or-treat bags that was practicing trick-or-treating and so the kids could either say it or if they wanted to use their makeshift touchpad they could use that and they got too trick-or-treat and so um I've been lucky enough that they invited me the last two years to come over and do a table and it's just it's so cute to see them but it's really um a cool thing that they do to try and make sure that all of our kids are always feeling included and supported and having fun no matter better things that they excel in or things that they struggle with so give those two a shout out bottom right picture is Jan our school nurse here at Parkview I just want to give her a shout out so as you know last month you approved the hiring of our high school nurse which the high school office is ecstatic about Jill and Rachel are thrilled that as secretaries they no longer are playing school nurse um but Jan was huge in helping me come up with some interview questions but then also now since Jenny has been hired she's been meeting with her going over some things with her making sure that she's you know aware of how we do things in Colombia but being there to support her and answer any questions that she may have um the bottom picture is from the middle school so this year each grade level is divided up and taken a quarter in our eighth grade team had the first quarter assembly and it was amazing um to walk into the gym and see that many kids and there's all kinds of different games they had a relay game that they did um at the end of it I got turned into a mummy which was kind of fun but I was a little nervous about breaking out of all that toilet paper that had been wrapped around me um they had all kinds of games they um you know played a rock paper scissor game it was just very cool but to see the kids that engaged that excited and all together again I think is Don and Becky both pointed out it's just we're getting back to that normalcy that incorporating that fun that hard work in the classroom is paid off with some excitement and some fun um so in that gym when I walked in that day and saw how excited the kids were it really just gave me chills to see how exciting it was it was very cool and then the top picture is actually the new Gaga pit at the middle middle school and I want to give a shout out to actually our two new shop teachers art and Jaren who between them and the construction class at the high school they brought the materials over and they built the Gaga pit for the middle schoolers to play with it was something that was originally turned into the PTA about raising funds and people had donated and so instead of buying a pre-made one the the Middle School used the money that they received for that to purchase the materials and then got those two teachers quickly jumped on board said we will do it it was a little interesting all the materials though got dropped off at the shop at the high school and so the class also got a workout and They Carried all of the materials to the back of the Middle School um but I know it's I hear it's a hot commodity it's used quite often to the point that the grass inside of the Gaga pit has all been worn out and now needs to be turfed so when you start seeing that the ptas hopefully raising some money or the Middle School's doing some fundraisers to give themselves a master of turf but I said just wanted to thank those two give those two gentlemen a shout out that they found a way to get our high schoolers involved in something that called the kids will be able to benefit from so very excited about those um and then so just kind of some things we've been working on so um currently working on um defining our RTI plan you guys have heard a lot about PBIS and that's our RTI how we approach behavior in the district and our academic RTI plan we've had one um but it looks very different in each building and with turnover over the last several years with our students needs being different because of covid and because of just different levels where they've come in and having to reach that we're working right now on really kind of redefining and Firming up that plan for RTI um the bottom wanted to teach like a pirate we is our new book study we just started this week so um I know it seems a little odd when you read teach like a pirate but it's really about if you think about the characteristics of of a pirate that they're passionate that they're adventurous that they take risks um with their stuff that's really what it's all about and part of it is a hook to get you in which is what this teacher is all about how you hook kids in and then you almost trick them into learning so we have 39 teachers that are involved in the teach like a pirate book study this um this time um the growth map we're getting ready the first of December to do our next round of Benchmark testing and so I am excited that either at the December or the January board meeting I'll be able to bring data and kind of look at where our students growth is not only from the start of this year to now but from last year at this point to this year and really kind of see hopefully that growth that we're making in post covid kind of you know all the data kind of reset itself then and then the top one is our teacher evaluation system so every year we have a committee made up of a mixture of teachers and administrators that meet to kind of go over our teacher evaluation system um for the most part right we make some tweaks make some decisions on how it's been done I've approached this group and so we are going to explore the option of drastically changing our evaluation system right we talked about the purpose of an evaluation is to get feedback on where you have areas of growth and so we're looking at possibly doing an action research type option that would allow teachers to grow right now when teachers get evaluated you get a anywhere basically from a one to a four one I is needs Improvement of four is that you're excellent what is I'm excellent yay it's a nice pad on the back right but that doesn't lead you anywhere to grow same with the proficient which is where um we kind of tell teachers according to the system is where you should land most of the time it's hard to live in excellent but proficient is where you know you kind of day-to-day live um but again what does that tell me how do I set growth how do I take chances how do I take risks and and push and improve things for our students um so that's something that is the committee we're going to look at and see if that's feasible for our district and then um if we decide to go that route we would implement it starting next year so those are the kind of four big things that I'm looking at and working on right now all right superintendent report we will have a closed session tonight um no action afterwards so nothing being done other than discussion um snow we had snow like last weekend and I was so thankful that I it's so nice as a superintendent to wake up and see snow and not be a school day you can actually appreciate it and enjoy it a little bit more snow days are never popular but it did put on my radar that I want to inform everyone we have five emergency dates built into our calendar we'll we'll use them if needed um and if we use all of them there's some people that are saying we're going to have a terrible terrible year of snow um woolly worms being extra furry and a lot of other people telling me the the Persimmons there are shovels all over the place and I don't know what any of that means other than if we run out of our emergency days we'll keep you posted uh remote learning is not something we want to go back to in-person instruction is key we also need to keep everybody safe and in school so just we have those five emergency days and um we use them silly season's also upon us uh the Halloween kind of starts It Off going around the buildings and watching the the little ones do the trick-or-treatings the older ones enjoying it it's fun it's exciting to see people excited and um that does carry over into the instruction as you saw with the labs and things of that age you know you do have to hook the kids it's hard to keep a bunch of people attention there when if there's a funny social media thing so you got to teach a math do they want to learn math now they don't want to learn math so you got to teach a man you know it goes through all the difficulties that teachers have in actually educating the kids and and the engagement and the life lessons are huge having the kids build and I say kids the young the young adults build stuff for the younger younger adults is just a wonderful opportunity for them to be able to later on say hey we built that Gaga pit you know and those opportunities are just so rich and so rewarding it's it's fun to see everybody having fun with the learning it's it's good to get you back to normal and so with that um everything else I'm going to talk about is an action item so okay awesome thank you very much we'll go right into action items then so the first is the letter A approval of the resolution authorizing the estimated aggregate tax level for the year 2022.

Allegiance please join me in the pledge one nation under God indivisible with liberty and justice for all okay we have all seven members of our board here uh Dr Burrell and Dr Mann are here and uh and many of the uh principals and administrative staff of the district are here as well so first on our agenda is a student Spotlight for whiskey near Middle School so it's been our custom Dr brawl I'll let you do some information sure so we're really excited about a social study Spotlight for whiskey near tonight Mr Renda will be introducing his social studies students along with 8th grade social studies teacher Miss Lane and our social studies instructional coach Mrs Bachelor so Mr Renda please take the floor [Music] good evening how are you tonight um I am very excited as always when I come up here I get very excited when we highlight uh some of the great things that are going on at Western Air middle school today you're going to see it's not up there yet um but we uh we I'm going to introduce um our instructional coach is Heather Batchelor one of our construction coaches at Whiskey near she's our social studies instructional coach and to to highlight and show all the great work that she's doing working with our teachers and how that's translating to the lessons that they are teaching oh that the lessons that they are teaching and engaging lessons that they are doing with our students um then we are going to have some of our students Miss Lane will talk our eighth grade social teacher and then our students will share some of the experiences that they had and I think that just to uh also say was the other night the other day I was thinking we were at the strategic planning committee we were talking about the four C's and being creative and collaborative and communicators you know these things that we're trying to make sure that our portrait of a graduate when they leave here that students are able to do I really think that you'll see that shine in this presentation that we have tonight so without further Ado Miss bachelor's up hi thank you so much for allowing us to be here tonight we're so excited and I'm so excited to highlight the work of the great social studies teachers at Whiskey near as well as the students so we really when I first arrived last year one of the things that we as a department identified is that especially coming out of covid we're really over relying on more traditional methods of teaching social studies and we wanted to come up with some things that would really help us get kids engaged in real world problems in solving things that were difficult challenges and one of the things in Megan and Kylie were the the eighth grade teachers were the first teachers who sort of jumped right in with me and said yep let's go ahead and we'll try to put together a simulation and then throughout the year we were lucky enough to put together a lot of simulations across the grade level so from starting in fifth grade we did an Aztec empire simulation so students could understand how and why this great empire fell we did Silk Road simulation in sixth grade where kids went on a three-week long adventure across the Silk Road we did a Boston Massacre crime scene investigation where the kids were detectives trying to solve the case of the Boston Massacre and in the eighth grade one of the simulations that we did was the California Gold Rush and that's what we want to talk a little bit about today we just finished it this year with the eighth grade we had a chance to revise it and the reasons that we think about why we want to do simulations in social studies is because they really bring out some of the core skills in the discipline so we really want students to be thinking critically we want them to make informed decisions come up with arguments that are based on fact and on Investigation we want them to really get engaged with perspective taking because it develops empathy and it also helps them see the world in a more complex way and then lastly we really want them to start solving real world problems and all three of these things I think are present in the Gold Rush simulation and you're going to see them as Miss lean describes a little bit more about the simulation so I'm going to turn it right over to her and she's going to tell you a little bit more about the California Gold Rush yes hi good evening so the California Gold Rush we start off with we assign each student a character that they'll experience the gold rush through and they'll get the identity of backstory most of them are real life people some of them are made up but like we've taken experiences and things we've researched and put them all together to make this like fictional character and so they get an amount of money depending on their lives that they started out with and and what they're leaving from home with to go out to California they're from different parts of the United States as well as South America and Asia as well and so once they get to California they have to make these budgetary decisions right they have to be able to pay for well one their trans the transportation over there whether by land or by sea they have to be able to then buy food right each month and housing and they have to get supplies right and so do they get the supplies before they leave out or once they get to California and the thing is once they get to California the prices are incredibly higher right and so there's there's a budgetary thing that going on once they're in California um they're tasked with then mining for gold and we brought a bucket and there's so there's rice and lentils and um there's like a spork right and um so they and then spray painted gold nuggets and they have to mine right the gold out and it's made to be like pretty difficult and so they have to figure out whether or not they can support themselves by just finding gold or what they'll do if there's any entrepreneurial activities or other business ventures that they can find ways to actually like support themselves out in the in California one of the things we did too is like a reflection on whether or not it's really working right like is their experience allowing them to um stay in California right so we do journal entries of reflection we wrote a letter home to where they kind of describing it to someone whether a family member or friend at home like what's going on and then at the final project which they're going to get introduced to tomorrow is a podcast that their viewers or listeners from will be back home and they'll be saying about their experience right and so there's a lot of tribulations that they have to maneuver through and they're going to speak to that tonight but it was it's set up really to to mirror that the Gold Rush was mostly putting people in debt right and that the the economic kind of environment was pretty harsh right and so if we can have Cameron Nicholas yuthka and AJ if you guys want to come up and speak to this and this what you're seeing on the screen is The Ledger um Jackie Whiting the technology instructional coach put together not only the slide deck that they used to to completely go through the project but she also put together sheets uh Google Sheets Ledger and so they entered in all of everything like you can guide yourself through their experience from their Ledger whether lost money earned money gold found monthly expenses loans from the bank anything and everything and it calculated it all for them and so like we all do when we make our personal budgets at home we're probably using exceller sheets like that they were doing the same thing and learning like the technology with that so without further or do you want to talk about this okay do you guys want to talk about why or how this is different it's like from something you did sorry so the the first question that we opened up to students is how was this experience different than other experiences that you had in social studies before now but in the past I feel like a lot of just standard you have your questions answer them like this was a lot more interactive and stuff people are a lot more fun doing it this is it was more Hands-On and creative you had more options it wasn't just option A you have to do this or option b you can do this you had the option to like go like kind of like think outside the box you had an option to like write your own story you were able to just maneuver the way you wanted to there were no like there were guidelines but they weren't strict you could easily like jump over them and it was like you were living through it it was like your life so it was more Interactive and why did you enjoy learning this way versus the way that you've described like Nick described as the in the original kind of thing it was a lot more fun we like enjoyed it a lot more it was kind of we did stuff like with the entire class not just say working with the partner on an assignment I feel like since we were kind of putting ourselves in someone else's shoes we were living through someone else's experiences but also making our own decisions through this I feel like I'm gonna remember it more learning it like this like sure I've learned things from my past experiences in social studies but um I feel like I'm going to remember more of it this way maybe remember it as more fun I thought this was way more entertaining and I feel like I learned a lot more through activities this way and can you can can you talk a little bit more about the real world and real life experiences in decision makings that you had to do and like guide yourselves as we threw out like you fell down the mountain right Nick you like you had entrepreneurial things you both have like different experiences right with um you guys your character was a Native American right you completely undercut the the store and sold your own food right so can you talk a little bit more about just real world things I think a lot of people like put way too much focus on the fact that they were making money each month with like the gold but it barely covered the expenses for like food and living there and a lot of people who started with say like a thousand dollars or five hundred dollars or even five thousand dollars ended up bankrupt and death because they thought like oh I'm mining for goldish I'll just keep making money not losing any gave you the option to show how good you are at something like if you had poor decision making skills it reflected your money like you would end up in the negatives if you had good decision making skills you would end up in the positive I was a farmer so I was able to come up with an idea where you had to pay like food taxes every month so you could like survive off of food I was a farmer and I didn't like that so I had a big debate with my teacher on it for maybe like 30 minutes before she invited another teacher to come and join her and I still won the debate yeah and I ended up selling my food and I made more money this way than gold as more people are coming gold gets scarce so it doesn't really cover anything for me gold barely could even cover like the cost for food I made most of my money by selling Insurance to my phone classroom yeah I also like had a talent for cooking biscuits which were like dum-dums so I could sell to other students in the classroom you we had talked about this today that that in in Nick's class there was two like their character's name was Lucina Wilson and so there were two people playing like having the character of Lucina right and so what happened what happened with prices like we would sell the Dum Dums to for 50 cents to a dollar and you would turn around and sell them for what but being that there was two of you well in the other classes people are selling them for five dollars ten dollars but we keep we kept having to lower our prices to be able to show them like they ended up for me I ended up selling them for a dollar each at one point because it's just a competition to sell them yeah AJ you want to talk about what we were do you want to talk about your experience who your character was uh so my character is a Native American and there was like at the time a lot of like racism so it was hard for someone like that wasn't like everybody else like in the mining like areas to like be able to pay the same amount and there's like uh like a tax that I had to pay double on because of my like like Native American culture [Music] and like I was also a Native American and because we had the ethnicity that we did we not only had to work just as hard as everyone else with other ethnicities we had to work even harder because we mined for gold and then we had to cash in our goal to get money to put in our Ledger um not only did we have to work just as hard as everyone else but we had to work even harder because the racism within uh California was so high and we had to work so hard to just get like 25 worth of gold and we had a lot in our buckets at least I did I had a lot of gold in my bucket and I was lucky enough to have that but when I cashed it in I ended up getting like 45 dollars for it and the person next to me who was say German ended up getting like a lot more money like 60 bucks for like tiny little pieces so I thought that was really unfair but yeah there were some people who made money just by selling other people's gold for them so I wouldn't have to pay the tax yeah it's quite the quite the game planning um we also introduced like so it's a foreign miners tax right and it was like historically accurate things that we would go the California governor he made an executive order for um like the treatment of Native Americans and coexistence of of different groups of people there and so providing like through the experiences and their decision making we were able to like allow them to to see and watch their peers right experience different things and so um I think we were talking today that this is something that like you're always going to remember right it's like I'll always remember the gold rush I think mostly you all said that today right and so is there any final thoughts anything even that like I saw everyone was really enjoying it people like paid a lot more attention and were a lot more engaged in the class and when we just like tried to find a like say we added just a sheet of questions on the gold rush but where people just answer it people did a lot more in the class and everyone was participating and like even like the mood in the classroom kind of seemed to shift as the gold rush went on like at the beginning everyone was excited to start Mining and stuff but then towards the end people were selling the like plots of land for almost nothing and trying to spend all their money on Candy because they were tired so we would sell vices of that would represent like the entertainment that would be available in California and we sold them Halloween candy for like 20 bucks for like a little KitKat right and so yeah they were trying to spend all their money but on a final thought um as an eighth grade social studies teacher and I can speak for my department as the social studies department at Whiskey near we wouldn't be doing any of this um we wouldn't be anywhere close to it we would be describing what they've been describing as like what we used to do without Heather and Bachelor and we wouldn't be incorporating the technology that we are without Jackie Whiting I can say that definitively so thank you very much right for allowing us to have such valuable resources at our disposal every day I really appreciate it job [Applause] Mike my question my question is did anybody make money or did everybody Nicholas did you made money did you guys did you did you end up being rich or just was a little it really well huh [Music] tripled the money wow okay so there was uh some people I always thought nobody came out of the Gold Rush with any money new entrepreneurs and we set up the conditions of it except the conditions of the game up so that it really beared that out so as you heard the mood changed because pretty much everyone just lost all their money so and that was by Design so is there any other questions Well we'd like to thank you all for coming this very very interesting thank you [Applause] so um why don't we take a brief break you guys are welcome to through the rest of our meeting if you want but if uh if you need to get up and go do school work or go home for other reasons we certainly understand so we'll take a break to let anybody who needs to leave uh you know head out and then we'll move on to the agenda [Music] yeah that was really cool that's awesome simulations are great [Music] all right why don't we go ahead and continue next up on our agenda is public comment um I'm going to read a statement for uh that I do at every meeting board of education really welcomes public comment um each speaker has up to three minutes to provide input to the board at the start of each meeting a maximum of 20 minutes is allotted for comment on any item that's included on the agenda for the meeting and at the end of each meeting times a lot of for comment on any other item that is under the board's purview um uh and we would also in that at the end of the meeting if we have overflow from the beginning of the meeting we will pick up people so everybody has a chance to talk but we do limit it to 20 minutes at the beginning of the meeting simply because we have an agenda we have to get on with and uh so we we limit it uh very purposely discussion of school Personnel uh any individualized student comments or any individual members of the board are not considered appropriate and I would urge any public speaker not to address those and I'll repeat this at the end of the meeting so there are one two three four five people who signed up two only two of which are related to an agenda item on today's meeting the other three will be at the end of the meeting so first up is uh Mr rudenis and when you speak I need name and address if I could Ryan rodinas one dark Angelo Drive in Brookfield I want to thank the board for all the work that you do as volunteers it takes a lot and I want to sincerely thank you I don't like to speak publicly but this is the second time that I've noticed something and I don't feel it's right to stay silent I have three daughters two left two of school age my wife and I love our children's teachers and want to commend them on educating our kids my opinion here in no way reflects the amazing job each of them has been doing this year and most other great teachers in our district I was made aware of the attitudes and behavior study from first selectman cards public comment at the border selectman meeting I want to give I wanted to give the district a benefit of the doubt so I went and did my own diligence acquired the court acquired the correspondence from the district and took the survey myself and was completely shocked the email that the principal sent to parents no way prepared them for the questions that were asked in that survey there was an opt-out but the survey questions were not made available for parents in the district only allowed parents to view in school during school hours I'm very familiar with that practice in my profession we do that all the time when we don't want people seeing our proprietary information we tell them to come view the data in our offices and while we look over your shoulders at deterrents we're seeing that data I want to warn parents if there's anybody listening I'm going to mention the survey questions and anybody that has young kids might not want to hear these it appears this survey was given to children as young as 11 years old and had questions that asked if children if they were straight bisexual or gay if they had sexual intercourse gone all the way what type of contraceptive they used how many times have the children used heroin crack cocaine driven a car while drunk or used prescription pills that were not prescribed to them the fact that you're asking 11 year old if they drove drunk should have been a red flag to the administration that the survey was not age-appropriate for middle school I'm not naive sadly I understand some children at this age do engage in these behaviors but most 11 and 15 year old children do not and this survey has now alerted the student body there are available behaviors and some students may now deem them acceptable I asked the board to work on transparency and continuity around the district last month I was told my kindergartner could not wear her Halloween costume this year while my second grader could the reason was because Center School administration didn't feel costumes were inclusive for all students and could offend some well this survey is also not inclusive for all students and is very offensive for some it is also not age appropriate I firmly believe these types of questions should not be asked within our school for any age I encourage all students to opt out of every survey until Brookfield Public Schools can be more transparent with parents about the questions they ask of our children thank you thank you um the second on the same topic is Mr Carr thank you for that you put it very well um I have to I have to start off by saying that these are my comments as a name and address oh I'm sorry Tony Carr 54 Indian Trail uh these are my comments as a concerned parent and did not necessarily reflect the opinions or Viewpoint of my wife the first election in addition to what my my good friend there just said I just wanted to point out that Behavioral Studies research should be um should not be funded by town taxpayers as part of Education and for every minute spent on this laboratory research it's time that school is not spending on educating our youth to that end we should either reduce the board of education budget commensurate with the amount of time wasted yearly on these types of non-educational endeavors the state wants non-educational surveys the state should fund and participate participation participation should be an active Vice passive volunteering effort now this is important we should have a passive opt-out it should be an active opt-in for any survey that's being asked of students also according to school digger BHS ranks 32nd in the state of 125 schools and whiskey near 76 out of 250.

when you're alive I call the Chico Unified School board meeting to order we are going into closed session and we will come back to public open session at six o'clock see you then thank you foreign I am calling the Chico Unified excuse me School Board to session we were in closed session and we have nothing to report from closed session and with that we will go to the flag salute I pledge allegiance to the flowers of the United States of America it's to the Republic for which it stands one nation under God indivisible with liberty and justice for all right so with that we move to student reports well as you can tell we have a crowd here tonight and a very very quiet crowd at that our theme tonight is student wellness and we are going to start off highlighting an elementary program and then we're going to hear from all three of our Junior highs presenting on student wellness so I'd like to call up Kim Rogers principal of Sierra View Elementary and she's going to tell us get us kicked off on the elementary portion all righty I'll get us kicked off first of all I'd like to thank you for allowing us this opportunity to bring Sierra View to you and share something that we are very proud of and I've been told we have a limited amount of time and I know that my counselor Mandy Robinson Robertson wants to fit and squeeze in every little tiny piece because she's super passionate about what she does we all are at Sierra View and I think we've got a really good thing going to meet the needs of our our kids so Mandy come on up she's our school counselor at Sierra View thank you so much for having me and thank you so much for supporting student mental health we know that that is Paramount right now something that we absolutely must focus on and I am privileged to be in a position where I have met one of my professional goals which is to create a model Wellness Center at Sierra View I was hired by Sierra View last year I was in private practice before that and participated a lot in the recovery efforts following the campfire with vcoe and realize that what we really need is physical space to provide services in addition to the people to provide services so with that let's look at our Wellness Center what is a Wellness Center well the wellness center is a safe and nurturing space for all kids with a focus on social and emotional well-being this is a picture of the entry of our Wellness Center we Embrace I think as a as a district we are now embracing the whole child and I could not be more proud to work for a district that does that because we know that we cannot separate social and emotional health from academic success it is essential we have to look at the whole child and the well-being of each and every student comprehensive School counseling at every level including Wellness services are vital to addressing the current Mental Health crisis that our children are experiencing across across the U.S we take a trauma-informed approach as a campus as a whole team definitely in the wellness center we feel like it's absolutely necessary due to the success of traumas that our kids and our community have experienced uh especially over the past four years we have made a very necessary shift and accessibility to services for all of our kids by making the wellness center a space where all kids are welcome it is open and we're focusing on building relationships and maintaining relationships with all kids so that even though they might start coming into the Wellness Center because they're looking to make friends or come in out of the cold on a morning when they're dropped off early to school we're developing relationships with kids so that when something comes up for them when they are triggered for example I had two students extremely triggered today by a fire drill makes sense right our kids are triggered by that they know me call Miss Mandy can miss Mandy come and get me yes I can and I was able to bring them to their safe space in the wellness center with a safe person they already have a relationship with um our goal is to also just erase the stigma associated with addressing uh social and emotional well-being with the idea that we all have mental health we should all be taking care of ourselves and our mental health every day here's just a little vision for you we have some different calm spaces so self-regulating is very important for all of our kids so is co-regulation so we know that part of a trauma-informed approach is being able to be with a child and co-regulate with them as and mirror what they're doing provide your sense of calm so that they can emulate that and sit and be calm with you we use the Zen Zone there a lot for children who would like to self-regulate before maybe processing verbally and then there's my office where we do a lot of co-regulation you'll also see a lot of students start on my special blue chair in the back that's got fluffernutter the dog on it kids will sit in that chair and hold fluffernutter to start the day it's very common three three different kids were doing that this morning we also have whisper rooms which were provided by the district which are fantastic we have two we have the rainbow room where I do a lot more art and talk Focus Counseling the tiger room our younger kids enjoy being in there we're doing a lot of play-based relationship building and healing and and growth in there we're supporting healthy play every day we've got a group space there creativity and connection center is what I call it creativity art is very important to connection and being able to process non-verbally and then collaborative play Space you can see a lot of children are just spread out there that's what the wellness center looks like every morning kids in every nook and cranny uh maybe even the space is very important and I would like to advocate for that for all of our kids all of our kids in the district deserve a Wellness Center um it has been a game changer at Sierra View our climate and culture was awesome before it is even better now but we have to create the space for that in our schools as we're building new schools um let me step back and say I'm definitely a child advocate and so I'm not just up here to tell you how proud We Are of our Wellness Center but that we need the space for this all of our sites need this space for this the people are there there's Miss G she's our targeted case manager she works um part-time Miss Janine is our counseling assistant part-time and then there's me full-time having that Wellness Center not just for our kids is a safe space But as a collaborative space for me to work with my team and be in constant communication about the needs of different kids is essential on a lot of our elementary sites we have our targeted case manager on one side of the school our counselor on the other and a counseling assistant somewhere else I feel so fortunate that I'm in a place where I can constantly communicate it just results in the best of care for our kids who utilizes the wellness center all of our kids it's a tier one social emotional support we start our year out and our weekly SEL lessons with taking a tour of the wellness center so every year we know that by week three every single child has been inside of the wellness center they have touch base they have received a tour they know that it's there for them it's open daily from 8 to 8 30 for any drop-in we're averaging 37 kids a morning right now drop-ins this year so far so far we are just under 2 000 children have signed in to the drop-in book I think that that number probably says more than anything else currently 62 kids receive planned Wellness Services every week in the wellness center that's counseling one-on-one pop with my counseling assistant power of play one-on-one or my counseling assistant with two students and groups with myself and my counseling assistant we have eight different groups running right now on a typical day 55 to 65 kids are served in the wellness center by our team and this year one of the things I wanted to do was reach out to our community and start providing the space for therapists to come in and provide school-based services on site and we're doing that with North Valley Catholic Social Services youth for Change and Victor counseling services our kids already feel like it's a safe space if their counselors are coming from these outside organizations which I make referrals to and using our space as well that only makes the communication and collaboration better and kids continually feel like this is my place this is another home for me like to introduce you to seven of our Sierra View Eagles hi friends hi all right today we're going to share what is our favorite thing about the wellness center Melanie can you go first [Music] thank you Hadley I like the Women's Center because if someone gets mad or sad they can come and go into the quiet room and talk to a grown up about it Clover um I love the wellness center because miss me he's really nice and whenever the girls are having drama in my grade uh we we all come in here and she helps out I like the wellness center because when I was I don't feel good about having a day I can come in here and uh um Jasper I love about the world is when me and my best friend were having problems with our relationship um we talked about it in here and our relationship was repaired Barrick my favorite part about the wellness center is that if I'm sad um or something thank you thank you friends you're welcome bye guys can you wave goodbye so uh all of those kids were very eager to participate um I think I could probably randomly pull any student from our campus and ask them what they loved about the Wellness Center and they would have similar things to say I'm not going to go into detail about this because I know we have limited time but questions are well what's what is going on in the wellness center we have a lot going on in the wellness center everything on that list except the top thing which is sel which happens in the classroom is happening um daily and weekly in the wellness center group counseling from me individual counseling from me friendship group from my counseling assistant pop and Pals which is my counseling assistant with one or two children Lunch Bunch uh which is what the the last student was talking about check-ins which are 10 to 15 minute check-ins which might be in play sitting down or I do a lot of walk-in talks with our students one of the things we learned through the pandemic was how important it is to get kids outside and how useful that can be to process while moving in nature conflict mediation and restorative justice sometimes kids refer themselves for conflict mediations that's happening more and more like I just don't know what to do and they come talk to me and then we just have a group and we talk about it new student orientation every new student who comes to our school I receive a notification from our office manager that new student is pulled about a week after they get a tour of the wellness center and a check-in how are things going for you morning drop-in and then art adventure with Miss Mandy is a much coveted prize that kids work for on our PBIS expectations the social emotional learning is happening in the classroom this is critical to developing those relationships with each and every one of our students we provide about 35 lessons in each class throughout the year and those are focused on developing their emotional regulation skills empathy problem solving all of those things we know to be important life tools for kids to carry with them there are some kids engaging in Wellness in the wellness center we've got kids lining up to check in for the day we have a boys group there free play art Adventure a lot of art is created and very much needed needs to be displayed throughout the wellness center and more free play from morning time how is the wellness center accessed drop in kids can drop in students are frequently self-referring so they either let a teacher know that they want to come to the wellness center I have a form online a quick Google survey form that they can fill out parents call and let me know my kids having a rough day can you spend some time with my child absolutely we can do that I have time built into my schedule every day for those kinds of check-ins teachers let me know the janitor lets me know yard Duty lets me know we are all a community and we're all a village so any referral that comes through we're going to address that as uh with speed really planned services are are something that we decide as a team through our Wellness team which meets twice a month and we get referrals from all of those same places every stakeholder and then other services whenever we identify something a student needs or a student is in crisis or we need to do a de-escalation we also use the wellness center for that one final person to speak to you today this is Luke he has two children at Sierra View who have really benefited my name is Luke torvill and my kiddos are Hadley torvill and box tour bill can you tell us a little bit about the wellness Services they've received well my daughter Hadley was in group and my son and my daughter both they do the drop off and fox has really been benefiting from the transitioning from here to his class what are your thoughts on having the wellness center available to you and your kids um it's amazing Fox talks about coming here in the mornings when we're getting ready for school he said we gotta hurry because I want to go see Miss Mandy it's really I don't know how to describe it seeing my kids like unfold into seeing you know their own interests something that they are developing themselves they love it here and that's it if uh if anyone anyone would like a tour please give me a call or email me if you want more information happy to provide that all right oh Harley yes mm-hmm absolutely so we have three different SEL curriculums we use kimochis for Kinder first we use toolbox which has the 12 essential life Tools in it for second third and then we use a second step for a fourth fifth and we use zones of Regulation across all levels which is fantastic and you might even hear some from our middle schools tonight that some of them are also using zones of Regulation so we're using common language we have visuals in all of our classrooms as well as the wellness center we're doing zones check-ins and then we're asking kids you know what zone are you in what is the feeling associated with that because we want to increase emotional vocabulary what do you think the trigger was and what tool can you use to take care of yourself right now but we believe in starting at kindergarten yeah good thank you hey Madam Eileen I think your microphone might be off on at all thank you oh you texted me I have that off too it's a meeting Dr Kaiser I I don't have my phone on during the meeting uh I the question though the wellness Services classroom you were talking about how essential it is to have that space is that a regular classroom size space I think so it's a standard portable okay because that's one of the things that as we March into the facilities master plan and start looking at being able to continue to provide these types of services we need to know the square footage of what's working I really appreciate it and the other question I had is on the back and thank you for this by the way that really helped um under planned Services um stakeholders of the wellness team and arranged by one of the wellness center staff and communicated with teacher and family it says permission forms are required does that mean the parent needs to sign a permission form for this yes for Planned services so oh okay so not necessarily like if a child just needs to check in that's a tier one support that we're providing to all students if a child has a specific concern or something they're presenting or something they would like to work on that I need to develop a plan for that we're going to have a weekly schedule for we're going to make sure we have a guardian permission for that okay thank you yeah all right yes go ahead Tom thanks um first of all okay this is amazing I'm really excited to see this kind of thing coming to fruition on that note roughly how long did it take for you to get this set up from the from getting the okay to having it fully function on the way you want so um my family and I camped out in the wellness center for a few weeks last summer my CrossFit group donated two thousand dollars my husband and I put in two thousand dollars and we probably put in you know 80 to 100 man hours between my husband and I and put it together okay thank you very much yeah you know and I did not ask the district for anything I really wanted to hit the ground running I really felt like we were bringing our kids back from covid and we need to have this space up and ready to go so it was me and my tenacity which is sometimes a little overboard that just needed to make it happen so it wasn't as though I asked and was denied it was really just something that I needed to do thank you yes and Matt um I had the privilege of touring this facility uh about a month and a half ago and it is exactly as she has described it it's a very Serene environment and I could imagine a lot of kids enjoying going and being there so thank you for what you've done and what you continue to do absolutely thank you all right thank you very much thank you so much Kim and Mandy and all this year of you for putting this together and we're just going to keep this ball rolling here I'm going to invite up Dave McKay and we're going to start with the Middle School aspects of Wellness hi I'm Gwen Palmer and I'm Ben Don finally and we are 8th grade students at Little Junior High we have been attending here for all three years of middle school and have really got to know our school one thing that makes Bidwell a special place is the value we put on Youth Development Youth Development is the belief that every student has something important to contribute to our school we try to show this culture to our new sixth graders every year during web day and follow-up activities throughout the year web leaders which are chosen 8th grade students reach out to their sixth graders on a regular basis to make sure they're feeling connected to Bidwell and most importantly having fun some of our main Youth Development programs at Bidwell are Wellness ambassadors peer mediators social mentoring Club live and the student School climate advisory these all point to a source of school community and culture to start off Wellness ambassadors is a program we started at Bidwell that trains a hundred student Volunteers in age-appropriate mental health skills so that they can be more equipped to support themselves and their friends including how to lead them to an appropriate adult on campus for help we also have peer mediators where we do something called mediations where we take time to reconnect rebuild and reassure each other in our school culture students experiencing peer conflicts may choose to have a pure mediator help work out their problems and just kind of persevere to find ways to come to a solution to help them like kind of solve their problems we also as peer mediators we do monthly training to keep our skills sharp we all know that some students have a more difficult time making friends and connecting with their peers than others at Bidwell our social mentoring program matches up student volunteers and sometimes chosen students with these kids to provide a safe structured place for them to have fun and build their social confidence Club live meets weekly at lunch to plan and Implement projects to improve the school climate past lunchtime activities we've done our appreciation yarn where you get a piece of yarn and you tight around your peers wrist while you're saying something you appreciate about them so they can go throughout the day knowing they're appreciated it also helps put together a yearly event called World Cafe where around 70 students come together to talk and create these School climate projects these projects enhance Our Youth Development Culture by putting students to work and making our campus a more welcoming friendlier place for every student so to kind of wrap it up we also have something called the school climate student advisory it is a group of about 30 students representing all walks of life who meet monthly with our principal Mr McKay to discuss both negative and positive School climate Trends this group develops suggestions to take to maintain positive Trends and interrupt negative ones so to kind of wrap it up as you can see our youth development here is huge at our school and with close to if not a thousand kids at our school every single kid's actions and contributions really matter and make a difference here we value every single one because it makes up our school family and what we like to call the Bidwell way how we all treat each other in order to bring out the best in everyone right thank you very much very well spoken any questions for our Bidwell students if not I'm going to invite Pedro Caldera up and we're going to hear about Chico Jr all right Chico Junior in the house [Applause] yes thank you my name's Sonia Huss I'm a teacher at Chico Junior and I lead the web program and this is this is some of my web leaders and presenting tonight will be Zia Miller hi my name is Zia and this is Echo Cooper and Madeline and we are web leaders our mission at Chico Junior is to support sixth graders as they transition into Middle School as you can see on our t-shirts our motto this year is paint everywhere with kindness web is unique because we teach through fun activities and we'll demonstrate that today Madeline can you help me foreign let's work as a team to jump while holding the straws with our fingertips one two three jump that's okay reset reset one two three jump [Music] we did it this activity teaches us that when mistakes happen we should pick up where we left off and refocus it also teaches teamwork and valuing a job well done Webb is one more support system keeping our sixth graders afloat okay everybody get those sixth graders up we got your back we had a welcome Carnival we distribute messages of Joy with candy and we do targeted lessons in sixth grade classes we help school have success as hard thank you for supporting Webb all right thank you I love your enthusiasm it's wonderful okay are we ready for marsh and this is Camp all right great job Chico Junior [Applause] I was waiting for that [Laughter] well for having the junior highs here tonight to present some of the amazing things happening at our sites I am honored to share some of the culture building activities that are actually happening at Marsh junior high school and for this I want to First acknowledge our teachers without them we would not be able to do the activities that we're doing in this 25-minute advisory period so following the campfire which was exacerbated with covid we our staff saw a need to support students not only academically but socially emotionally as well as behaviorally and this was a challenge in the normal day schedule so they voted to it and approved a waiver which initiated an advisory homeroom period at Marsh through this we really were able to push in some interventions for academics as well as social emotional and behavioral interventions for our students and ultimately advisory became the vehicle that led our school in a positive culture tonight you're going to hear from some of our amazing Marsh Gators regarding some of the school cultural components that we've been able to incorporate in having this advisory period hi I'm Amalia Brown I'm an 8th grader at Marsh and I'm here tonight to talk about the Gateway and how it helps keep a positive School coach School culture our school motto is To Be safe responsible and respectful to encourage us on campus we have teachers and staff that reward positive behavior with gatorbacks students can then use those gatorbacks to buy cool prizes and treats at something we call the gator Shack at the beginning of each semester to encourage positive behavior students are shown videos on how on how to be the best skater you can which is our goal here at Marsh for students to be the best skater they can and follow the Gateway the best they can thank you for your time hi my name is Mudah Lee and I'm an 8th grader at Marsh Junior High School and I'm going to be talking about the social emotional learnings that we do at Marsh you watch videos from a series called the believing you where you hear personal stories that are inspirational and empowering for example I watched a video of a company called doing nice right where I learned that kindness is free and it can and it can be very helpful to others we also watched short videos that explain social emotional skills like kindness social awareness empathy perspective taking Etc other ways more students are supported or by being able to talk to counselors and Chico State interns and there's also a room called Gator getaway where people where students can calm down if they're having a rough day students also engage with with each other by participating in clubs activities and sports for example I'm a part of cgsf a club on campus that focuses on community service overall I think it's important for all students to learn about their own feelings how to express themselves and how to relate positively to others thank you good evening thank you for having us my name is Felicity and my name is Elsa and we're going to talk to you about some of the fun and creative things we do at march to improve School culture and climate Felicity is going to share with you some of the background information about how it all came to be in the spring of 2022 March staff voted on an advisement schedule for our campus this move allowed us to have essentially a 25 minute Home Room daily this extra period has allowed leadership to communicate with the campus about events and opportunities to be involved in our campus our vehicle for communication this year has been we video news announcements these videos include information about activities birthdays Sports teacher features and upcoming events Marsh has given the campus a week plan which includes outdoor games held by Marsh leadership each Friday on these Fridays Fridays grade levels and play and have fun on Mondays we send out a list of activities in the Google form we affectionately call it the fun Friday menu some of the top activities that the advisement classes Choose Or Capture the Flag dodgeball tug of war and tag games each advisement class votes for which game they would like to play all these games are very team oriented and these teams allow students to connect with their fellow classmates we've also used this time to create class competition class competitions and games some of those projects have included The Clash of the staff where teachers competed against each other in each of their subject while the students spectate and cheer their teachers along this is in addition to the scarecrow contest Spirit weeks and more which without the schedule would be nearly impossible we are ASB 2022 in 2000 2023 class have created to make Marsh a more exciting place for students and staff these classic Staples of any leadership program include grams pumpkin pie eating contest coloring contests cultural celebration activities and a fan favorite teacher baby photos last but not least our fun fridays at lunch yes we used that name for two activities each Friday at lunch we set a spike ball corn hole volleyball and have music to create fun energy and to communi community celebrate another great week in our in the books as you can see our leadership also gives away to gives away to enjoy School even more thank you for listening all right [Applause] hi I'm Jamie Boyd I'm an 8th grade web leader for marsh Junior High School our web Journey started at the beginning of the school year at sixth grade orientation since then we have prepped during our web advisement periods to give the sixth graders a lesson every three weeks so far our lessons have highlighted the importance of closed versus open-ended questions the importance of a positive attitude and other important lessons our goal is to shape School culture and give guidance and wisdom to our kids hi I'm Mason Harrison and in in the orientation before school we split kids up into groups and we do games with them to teach them uh to make friends with each other we taught their names and we did games to help them in school to make friends and just to belong oh and the our most recent uh visit with the sixth graders was the frogs um the frogs were like those we it was our first Hands-On project and what they learned they learned how to work together and they listened really really well and paid paid really much attention all right [Applause] any questions for marsh Eileen ah okay there we have a microphone I was invited out to Marsh at lunchtime in I believe April and um lunch time is always my favorite time to visit especially the middle school and high school campuses because you can observe the whole population at one time having done this a number of times not necessarily at Marsh but at the other middle schools too the first thing I noticed was body language of the students as they came and lined up to get into lunch there wasn't the kind of typical behavior that I had observed in past years they were respectful of each other's space the noise level was moderate it was amazing and by the time everybody had gotten through and gotten their food and we're settling in again the noise level didn't ever intensified to the point where you were wondering you know oh who's you know who's teaching these kids table manners what I noticed as everyone finished lunch was the um the groups that just gathered kind of outside of the um cafeteria and it wasn't two or three it was 15 and 20 that were gathering together and I heard about the uh the the play date game days and there was a lot of excitement with that and I had a number of the kids come and ask me what did I do as a school board member they had apparently been warned I had of time that there was going to be a visiting person on campus I found them just absolutely delightful they were they were engaging and um connecting and uh you know I just I spent another wonderful lunch at a Chico Unified School I appreciated all of the interaction from from everyone thank you all right students thank you so much for caring about your school and making it a positive place and it wouldn't happen without our amazing staff so thank you staff thank you all for being here tonight and we will take just a little tiny break for those of you that may want to sneak out and go home and do homework or anything like that um but we'd love to have you stay as well so thank you again [Applause] I love their energy oh very good okay I'm gonna go ahead and jump us right into the superintendent's report and we're going to start off the superintendent's Report with some recognition and I'd like to invite up Damon Whitaker foreign good evening and thank you for having us here tonight um I'm joined by two of our School nurses Julie scalette and Olivia Canfield and Olivia believes we're here tonight to discuss lvns but actually we're here tonight to celebrate the heroic efforts of Olivia on October 13th at Pleasant Valley high school and so I've asked Julie scalette to join me tonight to share the life-saving details of that day performed by Olivia hello good evening everyone my name is Julie Scott as Damon said and I'm a school nurse at Sierra View All Ed and PV so um the Chico Unified Healthcare team includes Health assistants lvns and School nurses this team Works to meet the complex needs of the students throughout the district tonight we are recognizing an exceptional nurse in Olivia Canfield who is an LVN for Chico Unified and an invaluable member of the team she delivers cares to the care to the students throughout the district working with students with type 1 diabetes an array of medical procedures such as G-tube feedings and catheterizations and she works one-on-one with medically fat Fragile Kids every day as an LVN in this District may look different when orienting new lvns I always say please be flexible our students needs vary from minute to minute day to day hour to hour I think I probably call Olivia more than I call my own husband Hey Olivia I need you to drop everything and go here or Hey Olivia I know this is going to be tight but can you squeeze another procedure in between your already tight schedule Olivia is always gracious and sweet and says no problem with a smile I count on her and I'm so grateful to work with her one instance that I am especially grateful to Olivia for occurred at PV it was what I call a perfect storm our health assistant was out sick I was at another site and a student came in in a medical emergency this student had a known severe nut allergy and had mistakenly eaten an item with the nuts in it luckily Olivia was there assisting The Substitute health assistant that day Olivia knew exactly what to do based on the severe symptoms the student was experiencing and administered a dose of epinephrine to the student while staff offered support and called 9-1-1 symptoms did not fully resolve and per protocol Olivia administered a second dose of this life-saving medication she then rode along with the student in the ambulance to Advocate on their behalf and tell the student's family could arrive at the hospital Olivia's reliable smart friendly and hard-working I've never once heard her complain she's an absolute asset to Chico Unified so that's thank you and I'm sorry for lying about why we were here but I really wanted it to be a surprise so all right Advocate and we have a water bottle for you and we're going to get a picture of this moment so come on over come on get in there congratulations and thank you [Applause] and I'm going to actually kick off this next one but it will be a little bit of a group effort uh we have a really important leader retiring Dr Kathy Kaiser has been on the board for 16 years and she has decided she decided not to run again so this will actually be her last meeting and with 16 years of service Dr Kaiser is the longest serving board member in Chico Unified history she has see you made history she's had a lot of leadership roles she's had three terms as president she's had six terms as vice president and she's had three terms as Clerk so uh tonight we'd like to present you with a special gavel for your leadership within the district and this gavel was made by Tory German who happens to be Eric German's brother so I'm gonna grab that real quick all right foreign during her 16 years on the board Dr Kaiser seen us through some challenges um and while I hate to go back to those challenges they include negative certification budget reductions layoffs bargaining stripes the campfire covid we've had a few challenges over those 16 years but more importantly Dr Kaiser has led us through the rebounds and many many wonderful accomplishments including the passage of three bonds not one but three um a facility master plan many new refurbished facilities across the district interest-based bargaining leading to positive relationships with our bargaining units enrollment growth many many many academic athletic Arts CTE successes the list goes on and on new stadiums increased student support with TCM and wellness counselors that we heard about tonight to name just a few Dr Kaiser is a huge part of Chico Unified history and will miss her active involvement so on behalf of Chico Unified staff district office staff got a little bit creative I'm going to use that word and Eric is going to bring up a gift that staff kind of put together and present that to you and we're just going to say please be sure to read the label before you drink anything holy smokes all right thank you Dr Kaiser has served on our facilities committee since it's an Inception so I'd like to invite Julie Kissel and following her will be John Carver to say just a couple words good evening oh what to say about Kathy um I brought some M M's for you all tonight I'll always be a symbol of Kathy to me um my appreciation it's a symbol of her fairness and care of all the students in Chico Unified she wanted to spread those M M's around every student gets some M M's every school gets M M's so everyone is treated the same way and that's kind of what she is we have something that we want to give Kathy tonight from the facilities department and one of the biggest projects the showcase project that we did early on in measure a was the Center for the Arts at Pleasant Valley high school and she played a huge role in that so tonight we wanted to provide seats for Dr Kaiser and for Cheryl so these plaques will go on their seats at the Center for the Arts from here on thank you very much and thank you so much for your service to the district thank you and with that I'd like to invite up John Carver well the cat's out of the bag so before you open that Miss Kathy I just wanted to make sure that you understood that I heard that tonight was your last board meeting and I could not let you go out without seeing this beautiful face one more time so with that said mno was so appreciative of you being one of the cornerstones on this board for the last 16 years just a skosh more than I've been at Chico Unified well half but I've been 30.

that's right important so those are those major major questions for about an hour it was the administration myself Miss Jones Dr Dee Ambrosio and Miss Reese um I did not submit a formal report but as a summary we discussed any health uh curriculum in particular forms um Bridges walk to school day which was highly successful kogad and kindergarten professional learning communities came through eight foundational skills for seventh grade and special education needs as well as the Wilson Reading Program was a well-attended and well discussed meeting and for sure I will have a formal reports committed thank you we'll move on to Human Resources John not last night and pretty much went over there any questions so we'll move on to policy thank you darling Oh yeah we did meet you back on November 3rd at 4 pm Diane quickly represented the administration uh madella Jones myself as well as Miss Becker and Dr d'ambrosio attend the meeting it's relatively short due to many of the community members attending student conferences there's one major policy of 55 12 which is the third revision to this policy so far this year it has to do with the handling of harassment and intimidation and bullying and the anti-bullying Bill of Rights and has been revised to conform to the new 2022 Department of Education model policy um and in references new case law to provide additional guidance to schools and how to implement the anti-bullying Bill of Rights um a couple of the requirements we talked about previously is that there is now a standardized hit form which is on our website which is a requirement however we did discuss it as difficult to find do you search functionality has been restored to the website and they're down for a while um so you can find it but there are a couple of hidden Pages there that don't include it and so the recommendation from a committee is that all of our content should be Consolidated to at least one place either under Colin's page which does have a hip section or alongside the anti-bullying Bill of Rights but the form itself should also be quickly found under the parents menu drop down it's a resource a parent should be able to quickly find one of the changes um discusses uh codifying how the parents can submit a grievance or appeal a decision that a hip investigation involving their student was a GK not to be a hip or how it was communicated and so the policy says that that should go to standards grievance policy that exists in a school that policy is 57 10.

well let's try and build on our street even more I guess we have an increased proficiency but if we have a strength of try making this stronger so as you remember from Mr Casey's presentation is our highest proficiency available so we really want to decrease that and increase the next highest levels that's going to help us increase our later grade as well in case so those are some of the discussions that that we've been having we also have some really good uh in both groups We Had Each every teacher fill out their vision card we've had this done by our classified maintenance team our professional special ed department but here we have our certified teachers each one of them putting down writing down to us what their region is so we can get feedback from every staff member of what what their Vision you know is for ausd then I like Coach Q again she wasn't in my group and then and we had several staff share their vision and and the theme was around learning opportunities relationships school safety um improved academic achievement and when we had the October 7th training from from bail assistant superintendent Kevin Carney on Beyond textbooks showed a poster to our group right coach and the comments from our teachers who are similar to what a sample uh vision and mission statement that Mr Carney shared with us October 7th with our leadership team from John Teslas that's from that's from a middle school unveiled about 10 or 12 years ago I believe that was an a school and so it was really good to see that our staff the vision that we have aligned to what an a school the vision of an a school in another District a middle school years ago so you know Coach Q made a very good point that the arrows are starting to go in the same direction which is very which is critical to getting our vision down vision mission statement Beyond textbooks that is the PD that Mr Carney gave us as a leadership team and so we're really we're learning we're working other districts and to help our district and so it's been very beneficial this partnership with Beyond textbooks that being said um the final uh the final uh information there we talked about on Monday as far as the 301 District collaboration we really wanted to highlight just the collaboration and transparency would just be involvement of Dr chabot's leadership committee on the 301 plan this event excuse me we had some information last week we're going to dive a little bit deeper now thank you very much good evening President Taylor members of the board tonight I'm pleased to present to you our overall letter rates um employment scores for each of our schools additionally I'll be showing you some comparisons to our favorite charter schools and our East Valley school districts in their letter grants uh we have a lot to celebrate tonight and I should have a clicker sorry I'm a little nervous don't be scared we're really nice there we go oops oops there we go okay our Focus tonight is on strategic anchor one which is teaching and learning Student Success specifically we're focused on indicator 1.5 supporting a collaborative culture using data and research-based practices some of the highlights that you'll be seeing as we progress through our school's letter grades Bridges Elementary is one of only 20 K-8 schools within the state to have the maximum 30 points for proficiency uh Williams Field high school was the number 12th rated overall or number 12 overall in terms of the total percentage earned in the state for traditional high schools a hundred percent of our schools earned an A or B with eight of those uh eight of our 13 schools receiving an a while the remaining five received a b and you'll see that as we go through that that's rare for all of our schools to earn a or b most districts have but also see in the rated schools and then on AZ PSI the bonus points there we had five sites that received the full three bonus points for significantly exceeding the state average which is quite an accomplishment we're going to start with Bridges Elementary I'll be going through these alphabetically with our K-8 schools and then do our high schools at the end Bridges did not have the minimum in count of 10 azella fa students so they don't qualify for the full for the 10 points for El proficiency and growth so due to that their final score is determined by dividing their points by 90 rather than the 100 and then adding the bonus points onto this so looking at this Bridges earned 93.04 points which was an A and as I stated earlier Bridges earned the maximum points for proficiency but additionally their growth score was the highest for the district Centennial whoops did I skip it there we go Centennial is our next school they had the minimum in count for zelipe students so their final total is divided by 100 then the bonus is added onto that for Centennial they earned 89.01 points which was an a one of their celebrations along with their a is their Improvement of third grade minimally proficient on Ela which earned them five out of the maximum 10 points for the acceleration Readiness component they went from 32 percent minimally proficient in 21 to 28 and 22 which is a great accomplishment Chaparral earned 86.52 points which was an a one of the critical components for chaparral's success and a celebration was their El proficiency and growth for which they earned the maximum 10 points they had 22 of Zella based students which is the most for our district and reclassified seven of those students as English proficient which almost doubled the state average Cooley Middle School earned 79.59 points which was a b uh one of their celebrations was within the acceleration Readiness measure schools earned points for improving the percentage of students that are highly proficient on 8th grade math which is not an easy task and Cooley saw their percentage improved from 21 to 22 and earned uh the points for that Coronado our next school earned 81.43 points which was a b for one of celebrations for Coronado was was within their subgroup scores they had multiple subgroups that improved their passing proficiency from 21 to 22 and one of those improvements was in within special education where they saw their students improve their passing Proficiency in both Ela and math foreign Cortina earned 83.57 points which was a b uh a celebration for Cortina was decreasing as well for as well as our other site they had decreased the percentage of third grade students that were mentally proficient on Ela they went from 22 minimally proficient to 17 uh minimally proficient in 22.

2022-11-17 Monroe County, IL YouTube / KCHS transcript source: youtube Columbia CUSD4 Board of Education November Regular Meeting · passage 2
yeah and this is a two-stage process you'll approve hopefully the resolution as it's recommended um and then next month you'll actually approve the levy and that we will submit it to the County Board uh we are allowed to without a hearing to go up to and not to exceed five percent we're doing that again um does that mean we're raising taxes by five percent no as you saw last year when we raised it by five percent we actually dropped the tax rate 60 cents um it has to do with your eav uh the city had more to do with dropping the tax rate than we did it's the Tiff that comes on economic development happens the property becomes more valuable and then when the Tiff comes off that valued property can spread apart the tax rate and so that Tiff coming off dropped our tax rate the recommendation here is that we do what we have always done um which is extend for the five percent limit Administration recommends that you approve this resolution as presented I will address any questions concerns but we will not need a hearing no questions here questions all right will that be brave enough to make a motion to approve the aggregate tax levy as presented I'll make that motion thank you Scott the second perfect roll call please yes Andrew and Corey yes Greg Myers yes Scott Middle Camp aye Lisa Schumacher yes Tyson search yes okay our last item for Action is B it was approval of the years of service record this is another one of those yearly processes the faculty and staff had have had a chance to review the years of service record and the administrator recommends the board approves it um as presented questions maybe like to make a motion to approve the years of service record Tyson a second take me seconds all right uh everybody in favor hi any posts any pretensions all right motion carries all right on to our discussion items the first is our facility study um that's where a lot of work's been going on they've met with the faculty and staff I think we talked a little bit about that last month and that next month we're hoping to have a presentation of uh the projects um and and what's needed there I will tell you that we are also looking at a construction management where we have a request for qualifications that we're sending out Mr Hamilton and Mr Myers are on that subcommittee and um basically what we're doing is when you have a very large project that's going to possibly be multi-million dollars having a construction manager is a you can either pay the architect or you can hire another company having an outside company that's a flat fee um has some advantages to it it also brings in some other eyes onto the project and so the recommendation will be that we um put out this request for qualifications and review those Mr Hamilton and Mr Myers would do the initial vetting of those and then we would bring it for the whole board for approval do you two have anything you want to add to the process no not really other than just kind of reiterate what you were saying about bringing these folks in is is us taking the opportunity you know there needs to be oversight regardless um you know it's it's who's gonna who's gonna do that oversight is it going to be somebody internal which we don't really feel we have the resources staff or expertise to do is it going to be one of the Architects or the you know one of the companies you know that we already have and is that the right rate and is is there a separation of I guess interests um I mean it's not necessarily that you can't do it it's just is there a better representation of interest there and getting this you know I guess third party or independent service is what we want to look at whether you know doing the full evaluation as to whether that's in our best interest to have that neutral parties provide that role in a project that would be this you know that valuable as well as you know in time and money just the duration of it because it's going to be longer than any any one person can be able to volunteer to take as an additional duty so there's just you know there's some value in having somebody that doesn't have a financial interest doesn't have doesn't have any personal ownership as as far as the Architects to build it design it you know provide us a proposal if there's something that either needs to change or isn't isn't loved that gives another person with the expertise the ability to to give us advice and counsel so that's that's where we're kind of where we're going with this and and why we're looking at it and just as Mr Brody said going out and asking for people to submit their qualifications to us so we can finish that you know assessment as to whether that's a road we want to go down so when would they start would they start with the with the plans architectural plans and then are they on site every day so it would start they would start early in the process so they would help us with some of the review in the in the planning if you will based on them having years of Industry you know experiencing construction of large projects um and then how much they're on site would kind of depend on what we ask for um so just like any other service you can ask for the deluxe model or you can ask for the base level it's how much we ask for and then also I think in the different phases you would see different levels of on-site presence you know during it you know when you're initially kicking off a construction project you're going to want them on site more once you get into okay so maybe a Sheldon and and they've got three months worth of you know finish work to do maybe not in every day you know so it would it would vary as the project would go as far as my understanding so we would have um on the construction company or the GC would have their own project managers and this would be basically an owner's rep so that person would be would be um looking like you said attending those ocp meetings and those kinds of things to make sure things are on on track making sure our our concerns are addressed and those kinds of things so yeah right and as Adam said the traditional way is to hire a manager such as an architect which works off a fee so but it's kind of productive so the more they spend the more their fee is the more it costs us so like Adam said there is not necessarily aligned with our interests so this is a cost savings matter where they're involved at the very beginning they help us with the plan the proposals the bids and the oversight so it's it'll wind up I'm very confident it'll more than pay for itself so I really view it as a cost savings matter then more than an expense we're trying to save that taxpayer money and make go the farthest we can and make sure there's no waste any questions so quiet in here individual members comments yep we're down to individual board member comments and we have anything we'd like to say tonight I'd like to give a big shout out and a huge thank you to all the employees of cusd number four for all of your hard work that you do it daily and it shows by the amount of years of service that we just got done approving so thank you every day for what you do and the kiddos for making our little cards anyone else yeah I'd like to thank the the team Miss Miller and team the the veteran ceremony was was really um you know as she said there was a lot of community feedback it was it was pretty awesome you know I was fortunate enough to be able to take part in it so it was but it was great to see I mean it's not the in years past I know some of the covet had some impact on on how much they could do and couldn't do but bringing it back into the gym and having the actual you know event with a speaker and getting the kids engaged and excited and just all that and then seeing all the veterans walking in you know you know the proud parents and family members and friends or whatever their relationship was with the children that asked them to come in um you know it's just it's really in it exciting to see and it's it's encouraging because it's I mean that's the kind of sense of community that it really does build and and it gives the kids an opportunity to not only re see what the veterans do and have that Learning lesson but it gives you know you can see them just walking in just proud as as could be so if thank you for you and I know the team I mean there was I know I saw some of the high school staff and you know that was working with parking and I you know people from all over the district that were helping with it so I know it was a big production it took a lot of work so thank you guys for for all of that it was funny because I was at the faculty meeting when Miss Miller was addressing this the faculty and they were talking about and they started talking about this and people and I was sitting in the back kind of just taking notes and you were starting to hear of all the pieces and all the kids that were involved the coaches and everything like that and she just quickly went obviously we're going to need to have another meeting because this is not going to be the you know the faculty meeting needs to be so long and and we're going to have the student so yeah they ended up it was it was a bigger production than I think either of us were expecting and it was wonderful well it went very well and was very much appreciated by many of us that's awesome that's great my pleasure I like the excitement I just feel like the whole district has Smiles on their faces and it's just it's a good feeling so thank you all anyone else where prison is Progressive I don't have anything you guys heard me talk enough tonight so I'll spare you that and that concludes pretty much our agenda with the exception of our executive session as Mr Brody alluded we are going to Executive session however there's no action items as a result just a discussion and uh so you're all welcome to come back and watch us adjourn I know that's riveting so uh you wouldn't want to deny you that but uh that I will have to read it oh yes that's right so thank you please keep me straight that's awesome all right we're gonna go into the executive session for the purpose of appointment employment compensation discipline performance or dismissal of a specific employees of the public body or legal counsel for the public body including hearing testimony on a complaint lodged against an employee of the public body or against the legal counsel for the public body to determine its validity 5 LS ilcs 120-2c1 that I'd entertaining that motion to adjourn into executive session thank you Adam second oh second all in favor all right perfect thank you all for joining us again we'll be happy to welcome you back into okay we are back in Open session we uh conclude our executive session there's no action items as a result the only thing left to do is adjourn would anybody like to make a motion to adjourn all right [Music] curious thank you very much that concludes our meeting

so that's 25 and 31 if graded using our education standard of grading scale we'd have a c for high school and a d Plus for our Middle School I submit that our Board of Education and taxpayer-funded Educators should focus on teaching the kids reading writing in arithmetic the math skills they need to compete for University Vocational School opportunities along with the science Arts geography etc those courses that lend to a well-rounded pre-college academic education our children should not be Behavioral Science Lab Rats for the state or for our educators so let's collectively work on a goal of bettering our state school ranking so that when budget formulation time rolls around we as the taxpayers are more likely to look favorably on budget proposals and requests for funds that show a clear road map for achieving academic success for a high school and middle school students thank you thank you so for those of you others who've signed up on different topics we'll have we'll come back to you at the uh at this at the session on public comment at the end of the meeting um I will before I move on to the agenda I do will note that we purposely have put a couple of topics on this evening's Agenda One is a uh um is a discussion on the survey itself right and we will have a guest speaker Mrs Sturm from the Brookfield cares organization the second is we actually and it's it's a what interests them um next uh This was oh this was all thanks to the organization and implementation of Mr Davila and the Brookfield youth Commission next college and career counselor Nicole Usher for a lot of my colleges so I have only one left Dukes to submit but my first um admissions decision comes back December 1st very very exciting so we're we will be sitting with baited where you end up going so thank you okay thank you um all right so next up is written correspondence okay Monique Matthews Korea wrote regarding a FERPA violation Denise Wright rice wrote regarding special education Staffing and concerns and an foi request Mark Ferry wrote regarding the Candlewood school delays Jason Eddy wrote regarding the safe School climate committee and the budget Roundtable Sherry styronovsky wrote regarding special education concerns Joe Carolla and other swc coaches wrote a letter of recommendation tarakar and Elena Lopez wrote regarding the attitude and behavior survey and Ryan rodanus wrote regarding public comment okay thank you um approval aboard minutes I'll move that the board approved the minutes from the regular meeting on October 19th second it's been moved in second does anybody have any comments on the on the minutes okay hearing none all in favor okay so unanimous um so now we're going to turn to the superintendent's update and Dr Brill this is I think the longest list I've ever seen from you it's been a month a lot of interesting and exciting things that are going on so thank thank you uh Mr Belden and I'm going to Echo uh one item I think from uh from Caitlyn so I'll make that one fast uh this won't be a brief report they're usually brief but I will not uh take an exorbitant amount of time either the first thing I want to say is echoing on Veterans Day all four schools had events for Veterans Day it was incredibly moving um and um as we always say words are not enough for our veterans and uh it was just very special uh to be in a couple of the schools I didn't make it to all of them for the for the various ceremonies that were going on we have lots of PowerPoint presentations pictures and video we're actually going to put those together into a montage and hopefully in the next two weeks get that out to the communities to kind of see all four schools and how that's going in addition to that we have uh we were working uh video to Archive the college and career day so that's another nice piece of transparency and piece of History we'll have that we can showcase for everyone so we'll have that going out I did want to read from Robin Montgomery some of you know Robin's name he's a two police Chiefs ago he's involved with the VFW and he sent each of the principals and uh and me a thank you letter I think it just says it all um on behalf of our uh commandant of the VFW please accept with deep appreciation the events that took place at your schools and the inclusion of our VFW members the comments were very positive from our members about the different programs they had attended thank you all for your thoughtfulness including the VFW in honoring our veterans on Veterans Day so we're more appreciative of him but it was nice to get that acknowledgment and I know the many of the principals commented back and it's just a great relationship we have with them I certainly work with Mr Beale quite a bit uh with the VFW and the things we do here in District so really really proud and excited and thankful um one thing about Veterans Day it's important for people to remember probably about 10 years ago in Connecticut there was a big fall storm uh prior to Halloween and Halloween actually got pushed off in some of the towns and one of the strategies in trying to make up an early snow day or two that that different school systems had to take off was looking at where we could gain back some days and I know in the district I was in at the time I wasn't here in Brookfield but a similar decision was made which was rather than take Veterans Day off as a holiday where kids might not be getting the appreciation and learning about Veterans Day if you have school during Veterans Day and schedule and plan for celebrations and memorials for for our veterans they could learn more about it and we've been doing that and so um I guess it's been about nine or ten years that that's been going on in many school districts and brookfield's no different we're really proud of what we we do for our veterans and recognize them and bringing their families into in some of the schools so anyway I wanted to put a little bit of History out on that it's also American Education week and in the spirit of being appreciative today is actually educator support Professionals Day which applies to our pair of professionals so we send some notes out for a pair of Educators and just really thanking them for all the hard work they do with our most vulnerable students so we're really excited about that continuing on I'm not going to get too deep into best buddies Caitlyn talked about that already but at the high school best buddy celebration was yesterday and the joy camaraderie and the fellowship for an after-school program with that many students attending and faculty attending and Anna you got to be there a number of the principals were there Amy and the Gang were there we just just wonderful to see all the kids and some of the seniors who when I got here um I can't believe it's almost eight full years ago joy we had good meetings back then um the uh some of the the seniors remember being fifth graders going into middle school and we were laughing about the time zone reminiscing about how nervous we all were coming in with a new job and going to the big middle school and that kind of stuff and talking just like we did with Caitlyn about going to college and uh getting ready for all of that so a lot of good good spirits going on there cave Communications award I'm going to continue to move on once again Board of Education and school district have been mentions as winners uh either honorable mention or for actually winning the categories in the Bonnie B Carney award for excellent as an educational communication the four specific awards that the Brookfield Board of Ed is being recognized for in excellence in communication is in the going green project to thank Mrs gramling for the big going green poster project uh the district newsletter the district calendar and the Brookfield Public Schools um covid-19 opening plan a lot of you had input into that plan and all the work that went into that and of course the calendar and so forth so I thank everybody and just it's a big recognition that we need to stop and realize there's a lot of good that goes on and make sure we acknowledge those people who contribute the next one I wanted to talk about was actually if I can understand I went on to the cave website to look at how many people win these awards every year we seem to get three or four Awards and there's only about 16 awards given out it's not like there's lots of awards and we're pulling in three or four per year so it's uh it's a it's a tribute to some of the good Communications credit to the team you know and and everybody everybody contributing we're really um again there's just so so much good that goes on and I couldn't be more grateful um I did want to move on to another topic about 10 days ago there was an article in the paper regarding some uh FERPA eras that had occurred and we had some parents that wrote in and um those concerned me just as much as it concerns them we're listening to our parents um and there were mistakes that were made and we acknowledged that in the article and I thought the coverage was balanced um and so there are concerns we're going to address internally I have a six point plan that I put together on that in addition to some training that's already occurred that we've worked on with our staff and will continue to work on going forward I did invite our special services legal counsel attorney Cheney here tonight uh in attorney if you could come up to the podium and gents if you could put up the the one slide there Eric just to share very briefly a little bit about what FERPA is people hear that you know it's an acronym and how mistakes might happen and what we do when they happen how we disclose and how we work to have corrective action and make sure these things don't happen again so I'd like to turn it over to a attorney Cheney first and I promised her she could be brave and we would be brave it's not a long evening at all um and then I'll share with you the plan going forward so attorney chinny uh good evening everyone I think I've met some of you before but it's been a long time since I've seen a full Board of Education in person so it's it's actually a nice evening so what is purpose of federal law that's about uh it's about student records and it has sort of two components a lot of a lot of sections and subsections but basically two concepts the parents right to see their child's records and the confidentiality of those records um two other two others um the records are records are the only items retained but only retained by the district so it's not about what we have to retain it's about what we have to do with what we do retain so it's important distinction it also does not include directory information just the information that the government considers fairly generic such as names classless except in very limited circumstances so that's just a very very brief outline of what it stands for the family education rights privacy act so the next time you hear that acronym you know now you know what it means um I also want to talk to you a little bit about FERPA violations and the process that that's good practice to follow with the FERPA violations first of all most of you know that I've been an education lawyer for about 30 years and in my experience virtually all FERPA violations are inadvertent I can't in fact think of a situation I've been involved with in my entire years of practice where there was a deliberate FERPA violation I just want to give you a couple of examples of the most common firm violations one is suppose a student's document is incorrectly filed in another student's folder and then that student's parents request copies of their students record and that erroneously placed document is erroneously provided to that requesting parent and that happens probably more frequently that it should not just here in Brookfield but all the cases that I've been involved with another very common request is if a particularly a parent of an older student who may have a quite voluminous record makes a requests for the full record obviously a lot of redacting tends to be involved with that because some of the documents mentioned more than one student I have seen in one of these very large cases redactions being missed accidentally not redacting a name here or there not rejecting a piece of information here or there and that also is so those are in my experience the two most common types of FERPA errors and generally speaking they are inadvertent rather than intentional uh what's the best process for handling these kinds of FERPA mistakes FERPA errors first you want to inform any affected family as soon as as soon as it comes to life as soon as you learn we learn of it we let the family know this information about your child was inadvertently disclosed to someone who didn't wasn't entitled to have it we're very sorry um we're going to try to get those documents back and we apologize for the error one thing I did want to also clarify since you may not be aware of this sometimes there are certain types of things that happen in school district there's a mandate mandated report that has to go to somebody so for example if a student gets restrained there's a report that we have to file with the state there is no reporting requirement like that for a FERPA violation and no agency to whom it must be reported so it's really more reporting it to the family and again and then looking at our practices seeing where we went wrong seeing what we can improve I know Dr Burrell has been working hard with his team to look at FERPA and to look at how we can make our practice in the district better he has shared that plan with me I understand he's going to share it with you tonight um I can tell you that wholeheartedly support that plan is your special education lawyer I think they're all good steps to take I think we can all always look at how we can be better and so I commend the district for that so that's really all I had just wanted to give you a very down one let me give you a very brief overview what the law is what it covers and and so forth attorney Cheney we turn it back to John okay thank you thank you very much thank you so if I may I'll continue about the um so I put together a six-point plan and I'll be very brief brief on this that we're working on so the first thing is reviewing and revising internal process with Council so that was the first thing the second thing is looking at what faculty and staff training we need um Amy is already conducted for training and will continue to do so throughout the year um we've conducted foi training which involves records as well uh in addition to that working through training for the state special education manual and then the document repository work with CT sets which is the new technology platform for IEPs that you know is an enormous uh Initiative for the entire state every district is going through that transition um uh and and so those are some of the trainings we've already had we already conduct a end of year and beginning of the year training uh kind of a warm-up and warm down training at the each book end of the year we'll continue to look at mid-year checks some other things we're going to be looking into is IEP file training email records training and cumulative file training as well and we haven't conducted those yet but we'll be working on those throughout the year so faculty and staff training is point two point three is utilizing technology for complete redaction Eric our technology director has helped us with that it's a it's a very inexpensive software that we're working through so when we redact names or identifiers are completely blacked out and can't be seen through like a marker or something like that when you hand redact also looking at other efficient forms of technology that may help us with record records and responding to requests one of the other Concepts we talked about as a budget priority was a dedicated part-time clerk that could help us with FERPA and foia requests this person could also be utilized with we're talking about the principals just yesterday as a central registrar to help us with that that's another need in the district and kind of uh clerk secretarial type of work to give us some back back office support that would help with timely consistent and accurate uh you know responses to records and then the last one is auditing random files to see how we're doing with our processes so really at the end of the day these are attorney Cheney said these would be best practices to engage in and be consistent with so we want to move forward and we're working on it and we want to assure our parents we're working really hard and we don't want to make even one mistake um with any of this as attorney Cheney talked about of course they're inadvertent no one does it on purpose but we can't afford to have those mistakes it's confidential information so that's that's fur but I don't know if anybody has any requests for my update tonight we've spoken to other districts to kind of determine how they go through this process I actually talked with a number of superintendent colleagues and these are some of the steps they've taken when they've had a number of instances where they've had some concerns or even one and say you know let's stop records are important and they need to be kept confidential so how could we improve and these are some of the steps do they have someone assigned to that role or many districts especially larger ones but not exclusively larger districts have a dedicated Clerk or office that handles foi and ferpro requests because it is it's the the sensitive documents but the requests are many times voluminous and they're very complicated in terms of what the request is and how to put things together right now our administrators uh handle that and technology department uh mainly Eric help us put those together so it is uh kind of back office work that if we can get someone trained properly to help us with responding to requests at the times when it's request heavy it would be very helpful I think is there a way we can look at an attorney Cheney said there's some documents that go into the files that might attention to multiple students is there a way we can go up for the root cause and make sure that the only documents that the only documents um he's good at reminding me that the only documents that are going into a student's file only list that in that student's information and they're not like a schedule of all students that's going to make everything easy that's one of the pieces of this is working on exactly that well not just in hard copy but also in PowerSchool and how we log in PowerSchool because usually if there's conflicts between students it involves multiple students you know Johnny and Susie had a conflict and so how do we log that information have a record of it but when we go back to retrieve it for the purposes of a FERPA response we're not including another student exactly that exactly because just observing the ones that have come up more often than not it was those situations it was a schedule or multiple kids mentioned in a you know in a classroom or something like that where the inadvertent strikeout wasn't done sure and man if we could go after the root cause right it would it would help minimize the human error that might happen in football but it was it was I wanted to share that that with the board share for the public that we are taking it very seriously and that's just an important piece let everybody know would you be planning to periodically give us an update on projects I think we would I think we would given it's been a notable issue enough to be a front page article in the newspaper absolutely I would think as a board we would like to hear your ongoing report on progress would you all agree okay everybody agrees all right we can do that okay all right thank you um I guess item number six on my agenda here um Staffing update really important we're about 30 of the way through the through the uh through the year and um actually if you look at July 1 we're getting close to halfway through the year at this point being in mid-november at this point um I wanted to give an update just on Staffing so everybody knows um kind of where we stand generally speaking we have over 420 total employees and then if you add in athletic coaches and all of that we really have a lot of people who work for the school district we are really fortunate in Brookfield we started the year fully staffed we continue to be fully staffed that doesn't mean that turnover doesn't happen during the year leaves of absence retirements resignations and we have to replace uh folks um but there is a it's important for people to truly understand in some of what I say will ring true from what we've talked about uh in Recruitment and Retention conversations Human Resources conversations over the years the teacher shortage in uh America is 350 000.

in this just as a reminder for Center High School when you're looking at those scores it's not all students at Center High School we did take some of the students out of that such as our AP students so on and so forth because the purpose of i-Ready at the high school level is for to do interventions uh both in English and math so if a student was already in like an AP Calculus for example we knew there wasn't any uh necessarily uh and I already wasn't going to show that this is our completion rates you can see again exclude the high school because not all students at the high school are taking it we're in the 95 or 90 and above at least 92 percent so we had a very good uh completion rate uh going in at all grade levels and I'm going to just give you a kind of an overview of the district and then I'm going to have the principal of Oak Hill come up and show you what we've actually done with the scores at the site level so we have What's called the data culture meeting that's where all of our sites get together all of our admin academic accordion or so on and so forth and we look at first these are the district level scores and you have copies in your packet I'm just using one example from that you have a broken down as low as you want to go if you want uh even further the disaggregation let me know and I can go into the system and disaggregate even more so we look at the district level scores and this in this case we're looking in two ways one through the I ready system curriculum Associates and one through what we call forecast five which is just another way of breaking it down then we have the sites get their site specific information and that's where the action plans are built uh that's where the true work comes in that's where these scores then are used to inform instruction in what we do in the classroom again this is our math scores excuse me completion rates 90 and above is fantastic and again just a sampling of what it looks like at the district level and again you have that in your packet and again just a sampling of our math scores uh at the at the big District level View all right so what do we do each site looks at their site just as I said looked at their site level data and we want to use the majority of our our presentation tonight to show you specifically drilling down at one School site and in this case the principal of Oak Hill Elementary has graciously volunteered to come up and help us out we appreciate it so is this on Mike I've sat there enough where this is okay so I've learned my lessons um so good evening superintendent Lair board president and board members my name is Parveen Sainz and I serve as a principal at Oak Hill Elementary thank you for inviting me to share what happens once we get these fresh batches of data from iready so the cycle of inquiry this figure illustrates our approach in the nutshell in how we use data to ground our discussion in creating school-wide and grade level goals student groupings based on the identified areas of need and also a focus on their instructional practices the foundation of this work started with a book study focused on how to transform schools into professional learning communities the main gist of plc's it consists of having a process in which Educators work collaboratively in recurring cycles of inquiry um an action to achieve better results for students it's an ongoing continuous never-ending process which focuses on four essential questions it's basically what do we expect our students to learn how will we know that they've learned it how will we extend the learning for those who have learned it already and have mastered the skills and how will we respond for those students who haven't learned it this slide shows you the district-wide data protocol that we use during our PLC collaboration so this structured approach of a protocol has cleared norms and expectations for conversations so that we have a safe space for all participants this port this protocol supports Equity of voice allowing all members to describe the data make inferences and implications for future work I'm a huge fan of protocols and so if you go to the National schools reform faculty website there are multiple protocols to use for multiple courageous conversations that could be used with parents students staff so the next few slides will show you data from the iready diagnostic number one that's specific to Oak Hill this is the work that we focus on um which Mr Jordan just shared during our data collaboration culture collaboration meetings with our admin team Becky Lawson does an exceptional job of facilitating this data protocol with our teams at the district office admin level this work allows us as administrators to take the work back to our grade level leads whole staff School site Council elac so that we could create and refine School level goals with metrics that are aligned with the lcap for our sip says so I'm not going to go into details of the data in this presentation but would like to share some highlights which focus on our glows which are areas of strength along with our grows areas that we need to refine this slide show is a snapshot of diagnostic one this one focuses on English language arts the graph on the top left includes all students the graph on the bottom right includes data for our English language learners the percentage is in the red are students who are performing two or more grade levels below the percentages in yellow are students who are performing one grade level below and the green are students who are performing at or above grade level the next slide focuses on math in order for our teachers to make strategic instructional decisions additional information is needed Beyond this balcony view snapshot think of this as your initial call to Kaiser to tell the advice nurse that you're sick there's going to be additional questions the nurse asks in order to triage to make sure you are sent to the appropriate Department so the additional questions could be specifically like in for English language arts the i-Ready data provides information based on specific domains so for English language arts the data is broken into phonological awareness phonics high frequency words vocabulary comprehension literature and expository text in the areas of math the information is broken down into numbering operations algebra and algebraic thinking measurement and data and then geometry so this information allows us to see which area specifically are students doing well in which areas do we need to continue to refine and that's the work that guides our instructional practices if you take a look at this slide our team concluded that phonological awareness and high frequency words those two particular domains are our areas of strengths the glows while phonics and vocabulary are areas of growth the team concluded that phonics and vocabulary are the barriers for comprehension in literature and expository text and so right now we're talking the team identified here the areas that we want to specifically start focusing on next slide shows the same information but for math so our team concluded that we have a large percentage of students who are sitting at that one grade level below that yellow band area the important thing about all of this data is that the goal is for our teachers to be able to make strategic instructional decisions so that we could Implement tier one classroom strategies along with additional interventions as needed based on the needs of our students a part of the data protocol that we go through consists of reflecting on the implications of this data what are the implications if we don't address the observations that we're making what are the prereqs quail skills that our students need what additional information do we need to make better choices better instructional decisions so after diagnostic number one our team concluded that phonics and vocabulary are the Gateway skills necessary for comprehension areas we need to address for math the data suggested that student needs students needed time to develop their mathematical mindset and see math in the world around them therefore we provided tier one instructional strategies to be implemented in grades TK through six along with interventions but now what portion of the data protocol consists of creating goals which we've done as a site so as a whole school site along with grade level teams it's important to note that iready is one data point it's one piece to the puzzle when we're identifying the needs of the students that we serve there's multiple factors that need to be taken into consideration when making instructional instructional decisions and multiple data points multiple data points can consist of the oral reading fluencies that our teachers administer i-Ready is a computer oral reading fluencies are with that expert teacher a real human attendance data comes into play behavioral social emotional and then at the end of the day some kids are just not good test takers and so the expert teachers would be the ones who know that and so when we're looking at these goals and creating a very specific plans for students that information is critical we're working with real humans not robots and real humans are complex so I'm hoping that your takeaway from this presentation is that the work that's being led by Mike Jordan and Becky Lawson at the district level during our data culture of plc's is helping build leadership capacity to help Define and narrow our focus at the site level it's important to note that investing in our teachers is it is an investment in our children the professional learning opportunities being provided are helping our teachers to refine their craft it's critical for instruction to be purposeful and intentional based on the needs of the students the other important component to all of this work is our district-wide multi-tiered systems of support the mtss framework for in that work that framework helps us helps us develop Implement and evaluate a multi-tiered approach for students who are not meeting the grade level expectations and that whole thing could be a presentation on its own um the iready data points are a piece of the puzzle and information we use to help Drive our instructions so that we could be intentional and strategic in changing the predictable outcomes for our children and so and if you want to see the data protocol in place we'll be running our plc's in January you're more than welcome to come join us thank you thank you very much [Music] [Applause] so we wanted to do is is give you an idea when we you see the i-Ready that we're doing that the window is open every School site is going through this this protocol and this is a protocol we we got from the Sacramento County Office of Education who's been working with us we're spending countless hours at the district level and at the site level to look at the data analyze the data and come up with that now what part which is what are we going to do as a result of this data those countless hours it's hard to give Justice in an eight-minute presentation of all the work and what happens and so on but I would encourage you as Parveen said please come out to a school site and see them go through the process and see what the results are it's one thing to really look at just the data points but to see what comes of that i-Ready data it's impressive it teaches the administrators of the school so I put my hats off to them they're they're doing tremendous work I I have a comment um I did tour Oak Hill and spoke in depth with Miss Oliver who broke down this inner this information when we toured the intervention classrooms so they took this data and went down to individual students and they could take that student and know exactly what they need help then and so they take the intervention class and work on that I mean she explained it in detail it was just amazing and same thing with um Dudley we did the same thing with Mr Lamont she had this awesome spreadsheet and she could point at students in classrooms and this is where they need you know work on this certain individual needs needs help in this area it's quite aggressive quite impressive to the student no yes thank you yeah they're working tremendously hard yeah they are and sometimes you know we get these test scores and it feels like nothing's happening it is truly movement and instruction and movement in what we're doing with students once we get these and we go through that whole process and I agree if you can go to the school sites and talk to the administrators go see for yourself it's it's amazing these were the actual slides off of the data culture meeting when they come together so and thank you yeah thank you and I have a question about um how often do the plc's meet it's great to hear that they're happening how often do these groups get together so the idea is every Monday when we have the early out day to meet now sometimes things come up you can't do a PLC every Monday but they are meeting all the time I love PLC work so this is yeah totally my gig we do we just had a attendance PLC this morning and so it the goal is the fresher the data is that's when you want to meet as close as possible to it so that you could go through this process come up with plans and have some actions along with goals so that you can start monitoring progress and implementing awesome awesome thank you Miss Denise could you please share your slides with the board oh absolutely I would appreciate that not a problem thank you ma'am any other questions you guys I have a question for Mr Jordan um you did mention that um these results don't include uh students in the AP and honors courses and I'm just curious um what percentage of our students are enrolled in there and what are the demographics in that student population I can bring you those results back most of those are Juniors and seniors many of them are seniors and that's why we don't have them test because the intervention it's I mean they're seniors they're graduating yes these kids thank you that's awesome the demographics of the AV and how many students awesome so I think this is great um to hear about because um it concerns me greatly that when we look at the ELA scores for example 80 percent of the students are checking in at below grade level in our district and then I was looking at their low-income students and it was some concerns there with the disparity between disparities between non-low-income and low-income students and again with English language Learners and not English language Learners there's a lot of questions that I have about English and math I mean with 62 percent of our black students being you know more than two grade levels behind same with our American Indian students I just hope to see more about the plcs and what is being done even in the plans to Target those those groups and support the students who are clearly struggling at large numbers in our district and happen for some time so our last data culture meeting we were looking through data our emphasis was on our English language learner population that's what we're really focusing on what are we going to do really narrowing it down great that's wonderful and I can I can go on AP Central is the name of the website I can find out the exact demographics I just don't have them memorized for AP yes thank you I know right you know as I as I'm looking at the data not just in the i-Ready but some of the other data like in the spsas and such it does concern me when I see something like you know 11 of the population is a cheaper achieving at or above level um that's a that's a startling number but it's very important to remember that this is post covered times and there are a lot of things happening that are affecting that and I love that Parveen I'm sorry Ms sane said you know the i-Ready is one data point it's it's not everything it's just one point I personally know I have a son-in-law who cannot test for the life of him and so I know that that is also a real thing so I just I don't know anybody out there in the community is listening and worried about those numbers just keep in mind that they're like having said there's a lot of things going into those numbers and they're doing everything and anything they can to address themselves and it's just not a concern no no no and it's just not a concern within Center this is Nationwide yeah all this it's just not a center issue so yeah just to make that clear we have an opportunity all the comments that we're hearing and I I have to Echo and thank Miss Haynes for her her description because it's happening at all of our school sites it's not just her or Oak Hill that's doing it and and Mr Jordan and Miss Lawson's leadership around this has been fantastic it is it's hard work it's a lot of work but we're seeing some results and we're not settling until we can keep pushing forward so we appreciate the board support on that too and not just oh we're good we're not good we we owe it to our community to keep pushing and pushing and pushing that's what we're doing the work is never finished because we're we're not no District's going to be at 100 and it's going to keep pushing to try and get me going yeah well and it's going to change every year the bush is there we're constantly going through this process trying to figure out how can we get that what can we do what can we do thank you any other questions before we move on to the other topic okay so the Panorama family survey results are you're gonna charge me rent if I'm up here much longer so we have a couple of different surveys that went out we're going to go through a very similar process uh with our school sites with this data as well because it is broken down uh to the the School site level as well we've just been working on pan on uh that's what this is on i-Ready and those other things we just haven't had a chance to get to there yet uh so I can come back at a later time and show you the break down there but I wanted to give you some of the uh the survey information that we have so far so this just came out last week we we're with a consulting firm uh called The Sound sounding board it's a marketing Communications and we're really analyzing what are we doing Communications wise within the district and how can we improve so this is the data we got back uh so far and you I don't know that you have the full report of this yet because literally it just came out in the last couple weeks uh you want to be at least in the blue red or that yellow or whatever color is that gold okay uh and and so you can see on the first one overall satisfaction with communication from school district so this was a survey that went out to parents um you want to be at least in those top three average very good or excellent blue is the excellent category uh overall rating for my perception to the school district based on the communication I received and again positive results that doesn't discount there are some where that is in Blue uh you know we want to reach out to those families and find out what can we do to make things better um before you move on I see the legend up top for uh everything except the light blue what does that represent but still if you have no opinion I kind of think that is you know obviously immigration wasn't great what can we do okay thank you how many um respondents did we have to the survey 78 the next one I'm going to show had 50.

and we're just adding a sentence to say that if it's hip it's hip then you can directly submit that appeal of ingredients to the to the Board of Education you don't have to go back through the um through the chain command because that wouldn't make sense that the decisions coming from the superintendent and then you naturally go to the board for appeal um finally following the adoption of that policy we have to submit it within 30 days to the executive County Superintendent the state wants the county to have each District's policy on record with we also received an update from Diane on the board Doc's progress for Doc's being where we're going to host our searchable policy information you currently do not have any surgical policies published Diane has loaded some uh of the converted PDF documents but they use these are essentially images so you can't search against text in them um and so Diane has worked with Jess uh to estimate approximately 50 hours of her work uh would be required to load searchable docx um at a regular rate and we're recommending that the board approves this request as we continue to sort of need to have our policies and accessible in search of the format that's all Sean any questions we'll see yeah on the 55-12 I know I'm starting on page 27.
