they're under opening hours there's a company we would like to pull the individual contracts up for principal contract Windows is there any motion for that we can do this individually to run out of the group together as one see any problems with them nope um we'll go ahead and move on to the consent agenda ocean different agendas presented second Ary Pierce very nice donations there for the Rotary Club very nice okay foreign very nice looking at those when we want to bes December report questions comments regardless Elementary School I I just like comment that apparently had some really great student teachers it gives me a lot of Hope for the future I was like okay to retire them I've already had jobs I figured that does not surprising because you can talk for real and almost wow that's very competitive but a very good inaugural class at Bes so we have three working three um this semester one walk two and two block three so that means two of them will be full and one like we had this time and then like Matt has to I'm not sure what his I think his are block twos and Darla and Matt and I took the group out to lunch Thursday we think there might be one or two applying for another opening or two that we have maybe three potentially so my fingers we'll see what happens like we had a really good conversation and in Lindsay and hi Lindsay and um a couple of more subbing this week so yeah okay I will say the compliments were were very I mean very very high yeah all of our friends since the sign up for Burlington because their schools well you know it's a drive for most of them yeah you know that's harmful but you know it was um it wouldn't we even said at our lunch like when I got really doing I was like I mean like and she was like I wasn't excited but she didn't like the things I saw like Facebook and stuff yeah I heard good things yeah yes very excited yeah foreign middle school and high school they are at the music concert tonight so Matt's Jody Taylor are there they are Trent they're going to plan on coming a little bit later once they're done so if you have some questions on either of their building reports okay whatever we can either answer when they get here or you can give me some feedback either way so I would comment about the band I've got the band did a really good job on the breaker back Alexander a month in the high school we've started getting those reports that's nice good good another Weekly Newsletter yeah very good okay we can when they get back here we can ask questions if we move on to a special editor board for Lindsay so I know that's the question that's always burning um from the time I submitted that within a week I think I had hired actually like three people um which was very awesome encouraging um but unfortunately in Lego Waverly they've had several resignations affected at the semester too so um it's just kind of shifted the problem but we did have the hiring prayer today it was not a very I wouldn't even call it a success we had one person fill out an application we did have someone who has worked for us before is currently studied come in when we visited and so I will just Screech back out to her that is encouraging um you know I think there's multiple reasons I think timing is not necessarily good um but I also I guess glass half full I also have like you know right the week or so before I hired several people and so was that because we had advertisements out there and those things I don't know you know so um you know we're we're better than we were um and we still have some things to fill um so we're going to keep going we I did have a really good meeting with Southeast Kansas Works after um the insert or the job fair about some other things and kind of visited with Craig a little bit today um Crystal ector and I met with them about Services they provide and things that we might be able to have in classrooms like to help just have somebody else besides us talking about the importance of resumes and those things but also some parent and adult training stuff they're having problems finding some locations but like honestly I have a letter and resume so they are wanting to come out into different communities and put on some of those things and so I said I felt like that that's something that we would probably be a um willing to do and are voting you know what if I volunteered to work that night and they posted it and they were in it so that might be something that we looked apart if somebody if we could administer it and somebody didn't overdose appropriate so anyway Lori so the state of Kansas allows for pharmacists to dispense this free of charge without a prescription anything like that to if you look on the regulation there's a list of people School nurses fall underneath that and bystanders do as well so I feel like that is what covers Us in the school for using this um you know the the symptoms of opioid overdose can also be the same symptoms for somebody going into cardiac arrest so if it were given to someone that was not experiencing an opioid overdose Narcan does not really do any harm in that situation so that's another benefit if someone were in crisis due to an opioid overdose time is critical and so having in the school district um you know vaping it seems to be increasing just with you guys agreeing to purchase The Vape detectors for the bathrooms you know it's just becoming more of an issue and who knows where the little cartridges are being purchased from it if they're laced with anything that the kids don't know is is in there so that's Mr Marshall and I kind of talked about this a few years ago and decided to table it at that point because we just didn't feel like it was close to home and it just seems to be kind of something that you know someone knows someone that this has happened to you know it hasn't necessarily happened here thankfully but it does just it's very real very real possibility so that's why we decided to go ahead and talk with Carl and Jared and their consensus was yes do this move forward with this if possible so and some school districts make it a policy others just make it again a practice if you will procedure it's no different than like you're using an AED if needed if you need so um we just felt like it's just part of our practice to assist as someone that's in we didn't feel like we needed to do a policy again some districts are doing policies somewhere so um I don't know whatever your guys's wishes I'm fine with that yeah I don't think the major policy doesn't take so much I think we need to I mean I just think we just I mean you're trans yes you're going to turn people to administer yeah it would be like a staff a staff training for like my thought is to have one in each building and it would I'm not sure how many we can get no I'm talking about people oh no no no okay one Narcan one Narcan for each building training would be probably the entire staff um my helper and the secretaries of course would be the ones most likely if it was on the prison into the office but if it's after you know yes and that means you know we kind of need to to think a little bit about where we're going to keep it my fear you know um just that would be that's something that we're just going to kind of have to look at is if it how how that's going to work out with after hours availability type of things so um but definitely under lock and key but available if needed in the moment's notice do this for resource officers carry it on their person and if someone be able to do it yeah yes and they actually like the Koreans that I will be applying for is where they get there at our Campground it's um the dcca or Deca CPA I don't know how many C's are in there some see yeah sometimes okay and then the last item we talked a bit about this at linkage last month as well as at the at the board meeting a little bit regarding substitute solution well first of all thank you Lori for coming tonight appreciate your thanks for your information uh substitute Solutions we come up with some I've shared with you in my writing notes administrators directors have had discussions um and so there's a few different things that again that we could do to help out with the substitute situation um again I I really believe that uh the items that uh and I have reached out to you so you know I have reached out to Matt Thompson about if he would be willing if if basically I would just create an email or saying if any of you are interested in substituting on Fridays since Southern Coffee County desire strong right we'd be happy happy to have you so uh he has not responded back to me yet but I'll touch base with him after this board meeting and just see if there's a willingness at least to send out an email whatever he would like to kind of okay with that but um of the options that are up here I will say this Administration directors were not necessarily in favor of the premium pay because uh quite honestly we feel like we're back to normal and we have a lot of our Sr funds now for academic type reasons so I would love to be able to give out money but it's really something that I feel like in my opinion it would be best to just go ahead and go with our plan that we put together the full-time sub option I really do believe that that's again that could be a really good idea our subs that they could be available every day for the second semester I think that could be very very beneficial to each building and they have the I would I would think that there would be interest in a a full-time Sub in each building um again it would be a cost to the district but not a great cost there's some Financial numbers that are I think I've attached maybe even trying to see if I've attached the difference is yes generally you feel like that's a good solution but I'm gonna do things no per se work that day then if somebody else has a greater meaning yeah yeah I talked to Craig after the last meeting saved a little bit and I said you know if you considered this I know it's you know money but I mean it's not that much more money more pain sets every day anyway you know we're less stress overall you know we can help plan some of that stuff a little bit better I mean I just I think in my mind it's worth a try right and it's one semester and if we it doesn't work then we are out nothing I mean we're not committing to them another no this is from my semester one semester only and again if you see the difference there's it's about 2500 approximately per building so we're only at about 7 500 to 8 000 to try this and we can afford this one and so um the item let's see the next item three again I've already done that and then the sub paid to starting pay um that would be so for example custodians and Cooks would go from 10 uh 50 an hour to 12 an hour substitute pay that's what we have currently happening so the base starting pay for our custodians and cooks for example would be 12 pairs would be 13.25 so if they're studying for that they get that starting pay now some people might say well why are you starting your substitutes at the same pay that employees are you are you paying in the same thing well is that the right thing to do well remember full-time employees get benefits they get they get leave and then any other perks of the job being full-time employment if we do a retention bonus or a premium pay option and things like that so really it's again they still have the option to say yes or no if they're studying and right now we are not getting really anybody to sub I'm going to say in the cooks and the custodians piece at all so maybe if we bump it up to that starting pay who knows maybe I feel like I'm good okay tease the other one I've had a few Christmas gifts like our student teachers we've got a few years in college comes back for a few weeks or things are starting to stop I mean they're not permanent so right we're gonna enjoy the good days when we got them but I mean I think it might turn to somebody who's a substitute and do a full-time person if they come on so that they may not want to come on for 10 or 10.50 if we can get people started who knows and then here in the next day or two or three before Friday we dismissed I'm doing the little 15 second uh why do I work for the elementary school middle school high school Darla Matt and Jody and Taylor gave me some names of some people too hopefully convince to do a little 15 second camera spot and then Craig's going to help me put that together for um for public distribution so again and I'll I'll end up the the uh the public service announcement web if you're interested please contact us we'd love to have you as part of our Burlington Public Schools team so anyway so now if I understand that you're saying sub Subway will be uh would you ever said that was starting a starting pay yes but we are putting a sub in each building for so the subjects of or for cafeteria or foreign correct yes the full-time person will we're gonna what we would look to do is potentially and come to say put their their their pay at a different rate versus a hundred dollars versus what we pay for Subs because they are guaranteed and they're going to be with us every day so let's say let's just say for example we say 125 a day for our full-time sub and so if we do that then what they're guaranteeing is that they are going to be here and we're going to pay them a little bit more person in there good no good good question very very good question and we think we can fill those positions and we talked about it in our administrative meeting and there were names so now that we've got people might be I mean okay yes that's the other thing yeah it seems like we have I mean yeah there could also be somebody that we don't know one of our student teachers is actually that we have this time this actually so the Florida state now allows them to do their last the four weeks and there's a lot of people out they can substitute the district so one of our interns says ask us to sponsor her to be her substitute district for the last four weeks and we can hear about it we're hoping and crossing our fingers we have to move on to border ports anything about um as far as the the fees for Resident students and not resident resident students they as is there will be that increase for drivers education teachers is coming here from current negotiations thirty dollars an hour for the driver education teachers um and so that's that's driver's education in a nutshell if you have any questions who's told our current driver's ed teachers [Music] yeah we're going to verify and hopefully we may be adding one based on that increase in the hourly rate hourly salary we hope any questions comments well how many non-resident students do we get very many I think I asked that question yes and motion to approve driver education fees for the summer of 2023 at 100 a student per resident student and 300 for non-resident student and the students in a second promotion second for second few uses last year we promote our computers foreign projects that Brad Griffin and I looked at so I'm going to just briefly kind of cover those those areas and um so project one is the area around and behind Wildcat Stadium the football stadium if you walk back there it's deteriorating pretty bad shift it's it's it's a safety hazard it's a trip Hazard so that's project number one and project number two is the high school parking lot that's another section of the high school parking lot that's really in the worst worst I guess worst uh situation if you will it's the part that's deteriorating Plus on top of that we're trying to connect it with a with a new piece so it's it's there's two pieces in there when you're talking on the concrete you got a bad section that you want to try to connect with a new section to make it as as solid as possible so there there's a piece of hype for the high school parking lot that's going to be replaced uh East Side BMS sidewalk door that's on M23 that's um kind of on I'm going to say the gym side of the building there's a piece of the sidewalk there that's really it's it's it's kind of sunk it just sunk down and it's not very even it's it's a it's a safety trip Hazard not a very big piece but yet it's needed um let's see the Ford project that is there's an angled sidewalk on the main front entrance of the middle school that it's just uh like I say it's kind of sunk and then it's really flaky and the concrete has become flaky so that's a a sign that obviously is going to continue to get worse project five the West Side BMS sidewalk door so that would be on the west side of the building kind of on the library side the entrance side where it's between the middle and the high school there's just there's some concrete and steps there that have just sunk um and and shipped and just eroded there and it's not a huge section but it's something that does need to be be taken care of project six um there's just a piece a small piece you might notice between the Middle School and the high school it's kind of made with that usd244 sign is and the flagpole is that part of that curve is just almost deteriorated completely okay alternate one is the elementary front entrance um we could do this but we would like to hold off and wait just a little bit longer this could be an additional item depending upon how things maneuver and move and move forward with the elementary school and the potential options that may come up within the county and Flint Hills Technical College and the chip potential chip industry so we're going to hold off on that but that could be an item that could be added possibly alternate 2 is on the east side doors at BMS there's another section A small section there that just needs to be replaced um again very small section alternate three West VHS sidewalk that's the area where uh it would be the entrance into the I'm going to say the south east corner of the building there where Susie Becker's room would be Chris barbell Durk over that hallway that first Southeast corner there there's a piece of that sidewalker really needs to be replaced and then the large ticket item that we thought about doing at least we only get a at least a bid on this so the areas around the track at Wildcat stadium so think in terms of the grassy areas outside the track we thought about trying to concrete though so we wouldn't have to be mowing around our new Turf and our new track keep the grass in other words outside the fence line at 139 754.75 we're going to pass on that I'll go ahead and mow it yeah there's a lot I'll tell you if you go go walk the track you see there's a lot of grass outside and so we think that um we think that we can maybe mow that at least for another year or two I think do partial pieces of that plus one of our new mowers is actually a rear discharge motor instead of a side discharge mower so it's almost like a mulching mower drops the grass right now so we're going to see how that works uh so another thing I have a question on and it it may be a little late now but there's a lot of that Mud Jacking or phone jacking going on so have we looked at any of that on any of these projects available just because some of it just unlevel sidewalks on level concrete they're doing those and they're giving you lifetime here and he's on so right that uh certain amount is something potential to look at and I think it actually I have them looking at one of my deals right now but yeah that's like a good question that was brought up I think that well is right over Jeremy and Brad when they went through the process of going through each project none of these would qualify in that in that situation but it could very well be in the future we might be able to do this that Not only was the unlevel sidewalk piece there but it was also a deterioration piece so but I'm glad you brought that up and your knowledge with personal construction is helpful for anybody to bring in [Music] yeah so so with that being said um in talking with Brad Griffin we went through every item and carefully discussed and decided what needs to be done uh of note uh concrete now is 175 dollars a cubic yards so if you're doing projects you'll have that logged in your brain for I know it's expand it's expensive and uh Jeremy thinks it's going to continue to get higher at least for another year so um having said that we would look to do projects one through six and only alternates two and three for that total of 136 we had budgeted in this year 150 000 with the concrete there may be another item or two that may come up for example the elementary front entrance that is a possibility they could be you know come up they could be added on so we give ourselves a little wiggle room there if needed well I certainly think it's something that we are doing good at staying on top of this contrary about the elementary school but think in terms of when those two buildings were done not only return to elementary school but we're trying to piece together 150 to 200 000 at a time replacement for concrete that's 40 41 42 43 44 45 years old so uh it's yeah it's uh and again safety piece you don't want somebody to fall or you know drip over a pothole or whatever so some some grass areas some bushes I know people but I think when you're all concrete if it's too institutionalized and I like having some of those grassy Parts out there but in high school [Music] behind Elementary yeah I know and I don't know if there's some way in which it so Darkness unfortunately and you know and that's a good good comment and you're right you don't want to have a school be like an institutionalized piece and it looks so cold and concrete everything yes so anyway so having said that and you talked a little bit darling like this in briefing on the entrance in the elementary school if we were to conjugate how can we make it kind of like beautify it well potted plant seasonal plants benches you could make it almost like a courtyard a a an entryway where it's low maintenance if you're pulling seasonal plants out of a pot at the end of the the end of the summer or whatever then I mean so you can there's there's certain ways that that you could make that a little bit I guess a little bit better place that area too would be a protected area from a North Wind there was even a discussion we had could we put like four square spots and could maybe a classroom at a time if they needed to go out and it was really cold blocking the north wind potentially do you have maybe that little playground area possibly so there there we we've had that discussion I don't know exactly what the yeah good point no good point good good comments good questions anybody else anything normally would approve the concrete business amount of 136 776.35 cents for from Burlington's Construction Incorporated projects one through six and on the alternate projects two and three foreign [Music] operator error thank you go on the next section for personnel uh this is section's got superintendent principal contracts certified record contract and a couple retirements and then a some good news rescind retiring question there um there's a motion if we'd like to go into the session and talk about personnel I can I think we've had information on things been sent out if we have any questions you want to go back and talk thank you I'd like to move to go into the session for for 10 minutes and just for the words there Michael that we were talking there the percentage yes so we have motion for 10 minutes active session to discuss knowledge of personnel under a comma and return to this Open Session cut through the second foreign [Music] motion fails we'll move on to superintendent contract make a motion to approve contract with Craig Marshall super 4 and 24.

with respect and allow them to have their time that they signed up for um and so we will move straight into it with sir thank you good evening my name is Sarah dble and I'm a parent of current Wilson students and also CPA I have a few questions I would like to bring up to the board Financial condition of the district and need to reduce District expenses has been indicated as reason for closing among others as my profession would indicate I'd like to see the numbers that support the closing of Wilson will accomplish those goals and that indicate that the best Avenue for sustainability of the district is closing Wilson High School as far as I'm aware 600,000 has been verbally stated by Mr Lowry that the district would save by closing Wilson High School and this was a your only savings from my understanding and then from that point had not been figured however I've seen nothing to indicate what makes up that number I have seen the cost per pupil document that does show the cost per student at Wilson is higher however looking at the same document the cost to operate the central plan's high school facility is 500,000 higher in total cost if we move the central PLS high school students to the lower overall cost facility in Wilson suddenly the cost per student dropped significantly by my calculations running Apples to Apples comparison this would actually get us below the state and federal aid of $2,020 in all facilities the same cannot be said with the transfer of Wilson High School to Central PLS granted this is based on very limited numbers that have been given to the public has the board read similar scenarios having access to all the information that maybe the public does not was the same methodology used to compare if we were to close Central Plains High School and bust those students to Wilson versus the current option what's the savings comparison also if those scenarios were run what about longevity of the district if Wilson High School or Central Plains High School closes I know many from Wilson High School do not plan to transfer to Central planes I imagine a very similar scenario would take place if Central planes were required to transport to Wilson have scenarios been run for five years into the future if only say 40% of students come or if 10% of students come Etc can the district as a whole continue or will we be looking at closing yet another building in the next 2 to 5 years what are building Improvement costs into the future of each building I know the need for a bond has been mentioned in the past how much will we be asking of our taxpayers per location if all of these things have been done please share this information with the public we'd like to know I know some of this was looked at in the configuration study however the numbers there do not support the current proposition if these calculations have not been run I ask the board to please take a step back and get all of this information this is too important of a decision to have done without the proper due diligence regardless of where you're from in the district these should be questions everyone wants the answers to longevity of the district as a whole is at stake and is not something to be decided without much research calculation discussion and input I do plan to Emil this to the board as I really would like a response to know what has been looked into during this decision-mak process thank you for your time and consideration thank you and Kenny Kenny bened yes Kenny benett from Wilson Kansas my question to you guys have you run a survey how many kids from Wilson are going to CL next year and if not if your percentag is what they will be if there's a 90% loss of students what's your budget is really going to look like and that is my question to your board so if I can get a respon response sometime just let me thanks Brad thanks Kay here let me know if you cannot hear meou my name is Kayla Collins I live here in Wilson I've been living here for about 25 years um I did not graduate from Wilson but I do have one son that did and I have a daughter currently enrolled um I spent a lot of time looking over the documents that have been made available to me um again maybe there are some that I have not been but the documents that have been made available a couple questions come up um the first one is um how does the district distinguish between Wilson Elementary and Wilson High School in its accting system um I know just looking over the reports that are made available it does not distinguish between the two of them it counts it as a whole so on all of the numbers that were reported to the state how do you go about getting those individual breakouts um I would just kind of like to see that um and then again on why we've only looked at one years of data why don't we look at a fiveyear average to get a true look at whether it's Wilson or Clin you know whichever one is the better choice for us to um instead of just looking at one year I think it kind of SCS the numbers a little bit to give an accurate look um after all I believe it was uh Mr Rogers that stated that these words on your campaign Facebook page um this is direct take this quote will be directly taken from an answer that was posed to you about what is needed to avoid to avoid another closing and I quote I think that more time needs to be put into our thought processes considering what impact our proposed Solutions may have and what the next steps need to be additionally we need to seek the opinions and advice of the people in our communities to help make these future decisions in quote do you still feel the same way Mr worth at the February 2022 special meeting you made the comment and I quote Clin is the nicest facility with that being said I would like to share a few facts that in your opinion about the Nic school or School in our district fact number one the CL facility was built in 1964 and is the oldest structure in our district fact number two according to the building needs assessment that was recently accepted by this board the clom facility is in need of many upgrades fact number three this was shared with us during uh the configuration committee facility tours that the broiler as well as the floor tiles contain as festives fact number four the building is non ADA Compliant especially the bathroom which I do believe have been added to the capital alley projects at an estimated 240,000 does this include bringing the rest of the building up to adaa compliance to follow remarks made at the November meeting Miss do responded that the board of education has acted on items that the configur from the configuration report specifically citing the move of the district office like Miss c i to I too was on that configuration Comm and if my memory serves me right the of the district office was intended to be a location for space that the district already had not to incur new expenses by achieving a new space that contradicts purp sa money you also often speak to the fact of becoming one coming becoming United but isn't it true that this is only with the intention of w and because of Cal points you often contradict yourself and I personally have a hard time following many of the re for your decisions anymore case in point is last spring when you voted to co-op CL softball voice toste of Wilson and then at that very next meeting you sat there and gave a speech about how we needed to combine our Sports programs which is it also at the February 2022 meeting Miss C you made the remark about that the configuration committee was all for one high school until it was their own that was up on the chopping block speak and that it was the highest selected option was survey you might have miss one high school was not the most popular scenario in surveyed if we look at the report you will see that the choice that received the most Alle was two Casas or 12 facilities which would probably mean Hol Rood would lose their schools and see why it might have REM also I would like to point out the statement on page five of that report where it specifically said and I quote due to all these factors this scenario whether the Junior Senior High School was in CL or Wilson was not desirable by the group Mr Hurley you stated that one of the reasons you moved back was so your kids could come to a small school and and you have to do what's best to ensure their future I think all the parents even wilon clapin everyone has that same thoughts but the difference is is you chose to run for this position that you have to ensure what's best for the entire dist our kids and doters at the February 2022 meeting the then superintendent Mr Clark stood before you and said and I quote one school one high school is not a viable option for this District right now he goes on to say you will lose money a lot of money end quote but you didn't listen as members of this board you were elected by your peers to represent and do what is right in entire District Miss Dodie said it best by a comment she left on Mr Rogers campaign Page by saying communication and transparency is the key can all of you sit there and confidently and honestly say that you have all the appropriate information needed to make an informed and have been 100% transparent I believe that everyone should take just a few steps back look at this situation there's so much discussion on becoming one US versus them but I think be separate and be United what is good for Central PLS is good for Wilson what's good for Wilson is good for Central PLS yes it'll take some budget cuts and more than likely some production staff it'll take compromise it'll take creativity by everyone involved the administration the teachers the parents and the students the decision is not only going to affect the future of this District it's going to affect families it's going to affect businesses and it will affect entire communities but it's not too late we may be several small towns we may be three separate schools but we are one district and we can be a great one if give them a chance thank you thank [Applause] you uh you're going to have to forgive me Laura maybe maybe no sorry wri either [Music] um Anderson maybe Olivia oh did I sign wrong one well okay here we go I can wing it okay well I'm Olivia Anderson a lot of people may know do fire extinguishers it's my daughter Grace I just moved up here three years ago um I just transferred my daughter over here this last year um just half year into the school district um I've known a lot of you guys through the American Legion things like that just today I sat here for 45 minutes talking about my daughter there's nowhere else I would like my daughter to go I know there's heart here there's love for our kids um I picked this school because of the people in this community there no reason for athletics for nothing more than the love that this community has shown me and my daughter as we have built our new life here three years ago and I appreciate it so though I wrote my name on the wrong roster I'm glad I did and I thank you guys for everything that you have you know brought my daughter in here and youve taken her part of your guys's community and myself and I thank you all and I would love to see Wilson School dist District St right where it's at and on our community and we want to be a part of it so thank you and Mery CHR and the last one I have is uh Roberta um I'm retired ased a Trader I'm not from this area but I've been watching what's going on and sometimes I shake my head this doesn't make sense I came from a small town in northeast Kansas moral actually we live five miles out of moral and my parents thought it was a long way to go to moral and there was six more miles when closed we went to saat so 11 miles my parents said that's a long way we're not driving that all the time we're not driving that every day and when I look at geographically this district and I see families that live over by dorance and if set 12 here they would be asked to drive eight plus 28 maybe miles farther and I think would I want my kids in now grown to do that um so looking at the situation I I tried to come up with something that would be very easy to share I had some Mike I had some uh sticks that I had there's a little aso's fa about sticks and I was a children's librarian so I kind of like having visual things but if if the school board members would take hum a little bit put your hand in front of your face where it almost do that now you don't see the individual P until you get always away from the problem and then Things become clear I don't think CL will survive without Wilson I don't think Wilson will do as well as they hope without class plan so like the person who spoke and I don't know your name Kayla Kayla said I think you're stronger together now it's going to take some effort and there's probably no love loss this is a traumatic thing not only for the adults but for the kids and parents what's going to happen the the S to 12 kids they're like am I going to graduate as a dragon or am I going to D be an oyer it's it's a trumatic thing and I think we're teaching our kids all right now and I hope we can teach teamwork rather than trauma so I would ask school board members to think about this a long long and hard before you make a decision to close your school this is a beautiful building it's the first time I've been in this building it's beautiful I don't know what cl's like I've been to the town of Cl I bought Brier from Millers I love to see small towns survive so I guess you've got your work cut out for you um but would you I guess looking at the southern part of the district and the northern part geographically you have extreme Challenge to try to solve those problems but how many of the kids like one suggestion was if you closed CL and Wilson had would those kids come to Wilson you're asking them that so turn the tables and say whatever you asked them to do would you do it if not try to find a way to work together to come up with a plan there's very creative people here in this community very creative and I'm enjoyed being retired down here Kenny saved our one day when the storm came up I mean he stepped up in our pontoon could have run into the dock and he he stepped up with his friend and sa this Mike know Mike he does a lot for this community I just know there's creative people all around this area so rather than shutting teach your kids to stand up and fight set up endowment fence I mean there are retirees um that love the WIS of community I mean there's a lot of people that come back here and retire I don't know what it takes to set up an endowment fund but I know USB 273 in booy where I taught has an endowment fund that's set up for the schools so if there's not enough money for the state they try to make things work by using that money and I won't say I have anything else to say it's going to be up to your board but make sure you're being fair and equable if you're asking kids to drive 30 some miles on a bus and I only have 11 and I and my parents did think that was a long ways and then those kids don't always what to drive ride the bus and they be Drive on a night like tonight or when it gets icy and cold so why not keep F fight till you have to stop fight till the they tell you you have to stop don't fight each [Applause] other thank you everyone appreciate your time and your words so we will move into uh the what used to be the agenda 10 resolution for building closure U as the board is where uh we had the hearing sched um and the legal notice for that hearing had a typo in the paper and so we needed to cancel that hearing so I open the floor for the board for discussion to continue that discussion I would like to start out uh first of all and express my uh apologies to the board and the Wilson Community for not being um attending that meeting I was out of town for work and regrettably couldn't be here so just an explanation and apology for that but second I continue to voice my disagreement with this closure um I know that it has been brought up in the past and brought up tonight about the fact that maybe the Wilson building isn't the right building that there's other buildings in the district that might be better to close um I do express my disagreement with that I don't think that we need to at this time any building uh it continues to be a concern of mine to have any student either from the south side of the district or from the Wilson side of the district uh to drive that road every day the bus is one thing but we all know that if a high schooler can drive they are going to drive and to have them drive that road I get nervous when it drives a block let alone over 20 miles so I I don't think that this district is in a geographical setup where it it makes sense to have one high school on one side of the district I I think that we as a district have things that we need to do to help the district financially I don't think closing and building is the answer to those issues other comments or thoughts from I agree with what some of the patrons have said tonight about would like to see some some numbers that uh showing the amount of loss if it's 600 500 whatever that is we've never we've just seen um very general numbers and of course I I can't agree more with what Brad said um you look to a town you look to see if there's grocery store and a school and church and some viable communities or businesses and uh this is going to create a real hardship just Clos the school to attract people it could be done I understand that it's done other places but the geography of our district really makes it difficult and a hardship and uh it also bothers me a little bit when I was I asked the question what are we going to do with the savings and we said well we're going to provide more maintenance and so on but we won't need the maintenance here if it's only half a building we're only using half we go to the other end so we're sacrificing you know 75 80 kids whatever it is to enhance buildings at the other end of the district and quite frankly I don't think that there will be too many of these 712 kids going there so that's going to create more of a hardship on the district this has created rips in our board obviously it would be nice if we could try to work through that and H towards building a better District together then aart any other comments your thoughts from so with the cancellation of the hearing right now we are back to where we were before the November meeting um do not have to take action we we're not obligated to take any action if we do not want to close the building uh if we want to try to figure out any different option or we need to take a step back and look at numbers more we are not obligated to take any action tonight all but to continue with that option we do have the dire to reschedule KSA [Music] 72431 at the end of 2022 and students attending attendance pram High F that noce hearing on the cling of the attad with KSA 72431 date of the hearing January 2023 at 6m the hearing being HMI at USC 112 wil Kansas located at 35 Avenue wil Kansas andas for given as condition of the District Two The District's need to reduce expenses three District's needes we have a motion on the table is there a second second by J any further discussion from the board hearing none we will vote by call yesos yes Cameron yes Brad no Alison yes Chad yes no motion passes 5 two so we will have the hearing here Wilson 4th at 6: p.m we will get it in the paper as required by the statute any open Agenda items next month's agenda that will be in January that is the meeting that we elect officers just just a second guys I I do appreciate the emotions right now but we do have this meeting and it would be really loud and really hard to get out of here and I would like to get out of here so if I could just have everybody just chill for about three minutes and we'll get out here as appreciate it uh there'll be election of officers in January uh there is also a resolution that we have to pass that you have to set the meeting date time and place for the year um so we will keep in touch with where we're going to have that first meeting in January because we had the meetings resolution in January to December so we'll have to figure out if we're gonna where we're going to have that January we'll just let everybody know and get that out there um that we'll have a board member we have to uh select for negotiations and then Mr Lowry will have a report on our eser3 funding from the federal government other than that right now that's all that I have okay thank you if there's nothing else I will entertain a motion to by Cameron second by Josh all in favor raise your hand motion pass thanks everybody

start this governing board meeting for public hearing regarding revisions for the current budget we'll turn the time over to you as Doug Meyer all right good evening Governor board members governing board president it's nice to see here in this weather it's crazy out there so we're gonna um go over the hearing for uh the revised budget which is a requirement through Arizona Department of Education um and they're going to pull my PowerPoint up I think here it comes okay oh there's the agenda there we go all right so if you go to oh I can do it uh so just this is just a slide talking about the requirements um for the revision of the budget so um we have to do it no later than December 15th um they uh it's revised to our latest student count which we'll go over and as you know our budgets based on current year funding so when we do our budget in June we have to just we have to pick a number for what we think our enrollment's going to be and then what happens in December is the state says here's what your actual enrollment is and then you have to change your budget to match that number so um when we adopted the budget we predicted that our enrollment would be 17.75 and we always have a point because we are on the FTE um full-time equivalency and kindergarten was only half we have high schoolers that are 0.75 that's why those decimals are in there we don't have half kids or anything uh but when we when our numbers came in our revised budget was um 1665 so we're about a hundred students down Dr Wright had mentioned that to you all that that might be a possibility with some of the changes that we made this year so that actually did happen we're down a little bit in our um Group B count that's our special needs count and our gifted count we're down slightly that's a correlation to actually being down in our enrollment as well so we had an increase of 960 um in our budget with um with the new legislation that happened last summer with the with the legislature and then we had a revised uh carry forward of 824 000 that is a result of moving mno expenses to sr2 so I just want to talk about that a little bit so we did move some we did move those expenses to sr2 so that we would have carryover so that would we would have some money in our m o moving forward but we do have small class sizes and we knew that going into our budget so we do have a deficit we will take care of that deficit with our sr3 Monies um for our unrestricted Capital um that's based on prior year um student count so that's based on our prior year student account so that number is solid when we do our budget because we know what our prior year is but we did have a little bit of carry forward in our unrestricted Capital with 164 thousand dollars one other account I want to bring to your attention is our classroom site fund that's where our student our students sorry our teachers prop one two three money or their bonuses come out of um we did have a slight carryover of ninety two thousand dollars in that account that was just um we had less expenses than we thought part of that account pays for their um prop and is part of base salary so estimating it is a little bit loose because we have to figure in their salary in in that that's about 1.5 million dollars a year so that's not a huge amount of carry forward for that account all right are there any questions those are the major changes to the budget I might just review a couple of key things that the review and if I could outline a few of these when we discontinued the buses to White River we anticipated a drop in students anywhere between 50 and 125.

she gets here with that if you will if you are able please stand for tonight one nation under God indivisible with liberty and justice for all right thank you item number four is the adoption of tonight's agenda we are going to make a couple of changes Madam president I would like to make that motion with one amendment to item number 4A and that is and that is to defer item number 6A until the arrival of the Yavapai County school superintendent foreign thank you now we have call to the public uh we have lots of public here but I think they're here for celebration I don't have any public comment cards however is there anyone else that would like to speak to anything this evening all righty then moving right along we are not going to swearing in a board members Yavapai County Education Foundation Grant update going forward thank you madam chair members of the discovering board and the finish all and vice superintendent Cindy I'm Mike ellagood I am the current president of the upper County Education Foundation um I guess I consider myself a friend of Chino Valley I'm up here all the time every time there's a presentation like this I don't think I need to share with you this time what we do because at this point you probably already know I would like to share with you though one one thing and that is um [Music] we were able to pick out three in the upside County three uh exceptional I think innovative teaching opportunities or teachers and one of them was your Josh Steinberg I wrote an article which I was sharing with this is a Publisher's proof so it's just uh photocopy called Innovative resourceful teachers spark Active Learning and I wrote the article I was heavily edited of course by the folks in Prescott Living magazine but basically it reflects the fact that in many of our curricula we've gotten away from Hands-On Hands-On learnings we we teach people when we lecture them and we this kind of stuff but we we don't they won't do anything and from everything I know about education which is not a whole lot I like Peter I'm a civil engineer of course we we're all PES which stands for perfectly accent we all know that but anyway um [Music] learning learning Hands-On is important and there's only a few schools that do it and Josh Steinberg and your Heritage Middle School has come up a very Innovative program and uh we're very very pleased that so Josh why don't you come up and explain what you're doing with all this money I'm going to give this with you madam chair also good to see you good to see you good evening uh so I'm Josh Steinberg I'm the CTE teacher at Heritage Middle School and this is my third grant that I've gotten with uh the the foundation and um last spring uh I used the Grant and I bought wood lathes with it and they they're so popular this year that this grant that I'm receiving now I'm going to try to get three more and add them to the to the program but we do a lot more stuff than just uh Wood Lane we use scroll Saws and and um well Mike's been there and got to see it I mean if if you if you haven't been to the wood shop there you should as Daniels came with with Mike and you would think that that Shop's been there for a long time and so as you know last year we we didn't get electricity until Christmas break and um uh I mean the kids just love it so I also brought some samples of what students are making that I wanted you guys to see like this is just a simple little design that's made on on the scroll saw as as is this and it's fun you know the kids really enjoy uh making this up we make cutting boards that's like super popular so um they make great Chris Christmas gifts and then this is a wood turning that a student did last week and that's six pieces of Walnut that's all glued together and then they they use that blank and turn that down to what you know whatever shape they want so um hopefully we can get three more lathes and um we're always always needing stuff like wood glue and safety glasses and stuff so whatever's left over I typically will purchase stuff like that so wonderful I think I say this anytime I hear about shop my dad was a shop teacher for 40 years so very dear to my heart thank you for all you do thank you any questions or comments well I I think it's spectacular because I I took shop in Middle School my middle school too which really first of all taught me to print because I couldn't read my own writing at that time but they also taught you how to sharpen a plane after every single session they don't use planes anymore do they uh we we use them for demonstration I'm sorry I couldn't I couldn't I know you don't I couldn't could not resist that but no those are spectacular really love to look more closely they're beautiful yeah thank you and congratulations on your Grant thank you good [Applause] all right item 6C is our annual Sodexo Food Service update Mr Ben Montgomery so thank you for the opportunity to speak here tonight and I was going to give everybody a 30 000 foot view of what we have done and what we're going to continue to do this year this year and this is the format I'll be presenting everything in so the first thing we're going to talk about is participation District wide um this is the key measurement or metric that we use on our end and as you can see we traditionally start low in August everybody's kind of getting used to everything and then we go up a little bit and then we just kind of plateau since everything's been free we've pretty much held this consistent participation for a while now and we did have a peak in November but I'm saying it has to do with Thanksgiving because we have everybody here for that time so we'll do the next so this is another snapshot uh snap shop of our financials and this is just to kind of go into what's going to be on my next slide but to discuss kind of where we have with provision two so on the left hand or the middle column you can see November and this is where we're at and it's just a breakdown of everything on the right side year to date at the bottom you can see the client access or deficit which is the 510 account for the district as you can see for the year to date we are in the positive about fifteen hundred dollars that may nickel down that may go up depending on a couple variables but the main one being Commodities that we're pulling in excuse me which is government money given from the USDA to the school district and then we take that and we credit it back on our invoice so we're anticipating that to to stay consistent like I said it may go below zero it may go up but we should be in a good position for the remainder of the year um and like I said to tie into that so we've been operating provision two which has been the biggest Focus I think this year what that is in simple terms is all kids eat for free and no cash sales meaning the program is completely sustained on reimbursements from the USDA reimbursements are based off the eligibility which is why we've had such a large push this year for these free and reduced applications they're incredibly imperative and we need them to continue this provision too as from my previous slide you could tell we were in a good spot um according to this one we're at 54.28 free reduced our goal is to hit 64.

want to do yeah yeah do you have the award recipient here we'll bring them up yeah yeah we apologize we kind of got the uh come on everybody so we apologize so we uh typically we start at 6 45 and when everybody showed up at six I think the coach had told him six uh that's why I told you 645 oh okay oh okay yeah okay so so it's my fault then our fault then but we uh and then we got out of our closed session early so we that's why we so we'll uh we'll do it right now we appreciate your hard work on this and we'll get a special picture here to all of us okay we got right here let's do this [Applause] all right we apologize all right so that's it for uh plus plus anybody have any questions the rest of them are very uh minor changes so then when I was reading this they basically now how do we verify if we is there any way to audit free and reduced applicants so there is and we're not allowed to choose because I've gotten written up for this before private state we uh we have people submit applications and even if we question the application we can't um we can't do our own audit every every fall we have to do a verification just like you're saying with that but we have to randomly select a set percentage given to us by the state and it ends up being a very small number like I'm going to say less than five uh that get audited and we uh that we have we call those families and they have to send us proof that they're what they submitted to us is accurate so that's the only very verification we're allowed to do I in the past I have done my own audit and we were in fact that was here this school district we were written out for it because of that I didn't you couldn't do that and uh um so the only verification is that if you chose to could you do all of them no five percent or all or it's just it's now um we're 25 to 25 between 25 and 30 percent qualify for free and reduced now there's a there's a some families automatically qualify through the States they're on the snap program those come right to us and they don't have to do anything but then families that want to file based on their income they they fill out the forms they go through the process where do we publish the fees is that published or that's just it comes up in a it is what it is so the fees are fines are they are they written somewhere is it in the student handbook oh as to how much they are yeah yeah for next year at least the board approves the fees for next year at a board meeting in like February I do that's just the registration fee though isn't it yeah that is the only fines we would have would be I can that I can think of um are Library fines Chromebook fees for repair but we don't we really haven't had that this year so it's become our library fees in issue at all I mean not really honestly they're not that much that one issue we're having trouble with and this is not related but this is another legislation that was passed is uh lunch uh we can't do anything about lunch fees until they hit over five hundred dollars if they so if their balance gets over 500 that's the first time we can try to start collecting uh we do send them it their balances all the time but I don't even know yet when they hit 500 what we're going to do we have some families doing that they're just not paying for their lunches not many but we have some that are doing it but there is yes they've been notified many times yeah we're trying to collect it's it's a handful unless I'd say we have maybe a dozen that are racking it up right now but um we can't do that can we post it online I don't know I'll have to look up that one can you restrict what the kids are buying what's that can you restrict the type of food the kids are buying I don't think so I think we've tried that and they've really tied our hands on this one in the last couple years the last two years they've given up it's all been free so then this year was an adjustment so we thought people just weren't used to it but we're really down to just a few families right now that are not paying for the lunches and uh now we do have the the issue in our uh if they want to participate in activities here they have to have their fees and fines paid so that's the one thing we do have over them correct that's why that's not related here yeah yeah that's that's families who don't qualify for free reduced lunch they're they're just choosing nuts we have a few that are choosing not to pay and do they carry that forward into the registration fee for the it stays on their balance yep I mean but can you restrict registration because of pests I don't think so it's not going to check but I don't I think the one thing we've been able we've figured out that we can restrict is their participation in activities that are optional because you can't deny them access kids on free and reduced lunch aside from the lunch food can they go back and get as many snacks as they want them or no no we don't let that give them we'll give them a lunch that's it I can give you if you want an explorer meeting I can give you a report that shows you how much money is owed right now for those kind of things that they can't go to optional activity instead eventually catch up with them for like eighth grade dance graduation we haven't held those things um we've held Sports in Fine Arts but we could you know I get I get torn on the graduation thing because I I don't want it to if you tell me to we will but I hate to have the kid be caught in the middle of uh of that yeah they're punishing the kid for the parent that's why I said if we could put all the parents names on the website that'd be great I would be all for that why should I just stop paying until my kid ranks up 499 yeah I mean there's no there's no enforcement and sometimes public shame is the best way to go I mean people people are having problems they can go ahead and apply for free and reduce yeah yeah they don't qualify they just don't want to pay their bill yeah I can do a little digging if I give you guys some numbers as to what we're looking at I mean it's not enormous I just worry they could be abused is my worry they don't pay it now I mean I mean if somebody posts that hey you don't have to pay then yeah it's definitely well it's now on our YouTube channel yeah you could get posted to our website too much all right I'm gonna 600 it's called order we're good yes Mike Davenport here Christopher Espinoza here I'm sure all Fuller so I'm sorry absolutely Jenny hagstrom here Craig pavisage here Joanna Vice coach Drexler here Nancy here and Caitlin Vincent here we have core let's stand for the pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands one nation under God indivisible with liberty and justice for all thank you okay all right I'm gonna enjoy the perspective by Arwen up that working there's more seats in here and we really don't bite and of course comes to worst we've got two seats up here good evening um Arwen lip principal at South High it is my honor tonight to introduce our December student perspectives we have a group of students who partnered with adults um and that's intentional because they planned our first ever intergenerational learning Workshop I'm not going to steal all their Thunder because they'll walk you through it but essentially um you're aware that on our block days our staff participate in professional development during that resource period and our students um own kind of their own experience during resource whether they want to take advantage of programming we offer or if they feel like that's time they need to use on their own but we took um two of those dates in November and had an intergenerational learning experience where our staff and our students learned right alongside each other so I'm going to introduce our group of adults and students who planned it they are our change makers so come on in you stand right here by the mic because I pulled it down for me and the floor is yours just tell me when you need me to advance slides for you I think we're ready I'll be your clicker I well um we're here at the Sarah bar intergenerational uh learning workshop and we actually have a short video to show uh I'm a senior um I'm Hannah rodak I'm also a senior I'm Catherine havalusa I'm also a senior I'm Julia arjayo and I'm a junior I'm not the Chavez and I'm also a junior and these are our lovely sponsors [Music] and I'm one of the Librarians at South in a change maker sponsor good evening I'm Val vettry school counselor at South and also a change maker sponsor now the video right the video no sound good sound very technical difficulty should be going on nope kind of reassuring to know other people have problems with this stuff too yeah I know it's not just me after all make sure it worked out Easier Said hey [Music] students had the opportunity to attend a change maker Workshop during this Workshop we learned that stories Inspire empathy and empathy drives change we had such a great experience and one of our favorite activities was something called a mini story exchange it was a powerful activity to exercise our empathy muscles and allowed us to connect with new friends to understand life from another perspective then in 2021 we partnered with another organization called narrative four and became trained facilitators of story exchange narrative 4 believes that if you share today you can change tomorrow today we want to invite you to participate in a story Exchange in order to build more connections between students and staff at dgs like we do at madash we encourage you to take a positive risk and get involved and today you get to do just that by sharing one of your stories outside of courage in an open mind the only thing you need to bring is a story from your life that you are willing to share we asked that before we began sharing that we all create this cherish your partner's story and live truth be ready to repeat your partner's story back to them in first person with a genuine heart here's how the mini story exchange is going to work today each student will be partnered up with a staff member partner one will tell their story while partner 2 listens intently we will pause take a breath and switch so that partner two can tell their story partner two will tell their story to partner one while partner one listens intently we will pause take a breath and think about how that felt next partner one will repeat partner two's story back to them in first person as accurately as possible with a genuine heart pause take a breath and think about how that felt think about how it felt to tell the other person's story and how it felt to hear your story now we will switch partner two or repeat partner one story back to them in first person as accurately as possible with a genuine heart while partner one listens intently think about how it felt to tell the other person's story and how it felt to hear your story now that you have heard the process we are going to share the story exchange prompt for today today our prompt is describe a memorable day you had as a student remember each of us is made up of countless stories but during our time together we would like for you to share just one story from your life just as a reminder The Prompt today is about a memorable day you had as a student before we get started sharing our own stories with each other today we just want to share with you a few of our positive perspectives from participating in story exchange with my name my story and narrative four understanding other people's stories helps to inspire empathy in our school community and helps us to be patient with one another I think the biggest takeaway I have from story exchange is that it's cherishable it lets me understand the different passions and identities that people go through in their life and I think it brings the school a more Equitable diverse and a place where we can make connections thank you one key takeaway I had from the story exchange was that you might not know what other people experience and sharing my story and listening to my partner's story helped me empathize with them and connect with them and the school as a whole learning about how they have come a long way as a person and how they have matured as one and two and now our first dgs student and staff story exchange begins with you [Music] foreign [Music] exchange that we did a few weeks ago um in front of the students and staff in the library but before that as we touched on in the video we had other story exchange experiences over the past few years specifically since our freshman year us three so Hannah and I just want to talk about our first change maker leadership day which was in 2019 with an organization called my name my story and that's when we were first introduced to the story exchange model which you saw demonstrated in the video where you share your story and then you get it repeated back to you by the person that you told it to in the first person so Hannah do you want to talk about your experience my experience with my name my story was very positive coming into school as a freshman I wasn't sure how I would fit into the school community and how I would be able to make those connections but being able to sit down with my peers people who were the same age as me freshmen people who were upperclassmen like Juniors or seniors and being able to share a story that was authentic to me and true to who I am and hearing it repeated back seeing that people could empathize with my story and empathize with who I am was a very like powerful experience for me especially as a freshman and it helped encourage me to just feel connected to the school Community as a whole that I wasn't just like one student in a sea of the 2000 some kids we have at school I was really connected to the Greater Community of dgs okay so um I was a freshman um in 2020 sorry I was a friend oh Jesus I'll just hold it um so I was a freshman in 2020 and this was when we had school on zoom and so going in the freshman year it was definitely very nerve-wracking for me because I didn't really know what to expect um and I felt like I was also kind of missing that connection piece that you would usually have when you're in person with your peers and your teachers so this experience on this exchange was definitely a very positive experience for me as well um I knew I know that um I came from a private school so I didn't really know many people but having this experience kind of allowed me to connect with other people and I also realized that you kind of have like that um going into like high school you have that vision of like all the other all the older students are gonna like Bully you and like all those things but going to this exchange it really helped me realize that everyone at dgs and like at school is always really nice and um having this exchange kind of helped me open my eyes to that and so 2021 we had um our story exchange certification and uh I was upperclassmen and change makers we actually just LED our own uh Star Exchange and it was really great being like a junior and just like opening up freshmen and you know getting more comfortable with the school uh hearing their stories and like you know hearing it from like the first uh person from like another person um it's just like you grow like a like a bond like really fast um and then seeing them in the hallways is just like amazing and it just kind of brings out all our barriers um for new students and also during our 2021 story change it was like I felt more confident after that like that exact story and change because it was like it was mostly like a two on two conversation and it was better because you could actually like talk to the person and it was more like I felt more confident with like with my partner because I knew that like that they were actually listening and like I knew that like that they would also understand like from what a person is coming from so yeah [Music] so that brings us to the storage days that we're here to talk about where we did during our resource periods as miss explained to you guys and it was a really awesome experience we weren't sure how many students we would get to come because obviously all the teachers were there but that was something we're kind of nervous about getting enough people but there were a lot and it was really a cool experience to be sitting in a circle with a group of other teachers I think it was eight in a group and my personal experience it was me and my friend and six other teachers and then we each kind of split up and took a few and then more people came and it was really cool I was in a group with my math teacher and the director of the play I was in at a time so it was a different experience being that I knew the people I was talking to but I also didn't so it was it awesome experience for me to share my stories with them and them to share stories with me and not just the usual level that I see them with and I'm definitely more comfortable in class talking to my teacher now I love seeing my play director in the hallway and other teachers that were my group I feel like normally faces that would just walk by me or people I know and I've got to share something with um yeah I agree um like just the connections that you build with people that like you normally you don't have to like uh look up to and like being put down on like a to like eye level and doing like a story from even like even though like I didn't know the teacher at the time uh like building like that strong connection um and like hearing like a deep personal story um really just broke down like a lot of walls and um it's just like it just feels like a lot more comfortable walking around the hallways and seeing like other members like the staff that you've never met before one thing that I really liked about this experience is that I got to connect with former teachers that I've had throughout my four years at dgs I feel like that's something that we don't really get to do that often unless you have that teacher again or you see them frequently before or after school so it was really nice for me to like sit in a circle with a lot of my former teachers and catch up with them they all asked how I'm part of the dance team they all asked how the dance team was doing this season and it was nice to know that they had like remembered individual things about me and remembered me as a student and I also remember things about them as a teacher and just getting to reconnect with them and like Forge those bonds again was really like meaningful for me um I also had a positive experience doing this um I was with a teacher that I didn't know at the time and it's really nice getting to know others other teachers because again like if you're not in their class you don't ever get to know them um so getting to know like the other people in our community is always a good it's always um good because I feel like it really builds that sense of community and like they all said I really feel like um we built like more of a sense of community and I feel a lot more comfortable I mean to be honest it was like I mean cookie was like a good thing right like like I would go like just you know but like to be honest like I I feel liked it because it was also a a 1v1 like a one-on-one conversation with the teacher that you probably didn't even know or talked to before and just just like talking to them and like it makes like your own like perspective different um people because I mean I something like I'm like oh like he looks mean like but but like to be honest like I would like actually I would enjoy talking to like every teacher to be honest because every single one have has a different like perspective yeah that's true so um you know Miss galon and I will speak together in this one um you know overall we had a very positive experience from staff uh we had one staff email us and that was the quote that we put on the slide here um for the most part it was really a meaningful activity for our staff to engage with students outside of instructional time that's really what this came down to we focused so much on instructional professional development which is absolutely important but the other aspect of social emotional development and having that time to connect having a human interaction that's meaningful and also vulnerable you know it puts our students not only in a very you know kind of uh not not precarious situation but being able to talk to an adult and just share a life experience I think is uh easy to relate to so hopefully we broke down some barriers and I think it was overall positive experience yes I think we had had the opportunity to observe the students at their original training we participated at the second training so we kind of knew like this is a powerful moment um and we had a great show in students I think at one moment one of the sessions we had more students and staff members I was like yes they can tell me it was great and we knew like it's going to be powerful we chose one quote but all the feedback teachers really valued like getting just to exchange their story and realize that maybe we are you know separate by a number of years the experiences are still the same and we connected as humans foreign first of all great presentation yeah yeah great and I love the acting so I'll think about it but did you have a theme to focus the conversation or could you talk about anything it was a like a positive memory you shared about school okay um so like for staff like when they were in school or even like now Mike did your phone yeah I was going to ask if uh there were any I imagine there were some sort of like aha moments right where it um seems to me uh there well especially with uh social media and the way things are these days uh people judge each other based on a few opinions or a few comments or a few actions and they really don't know the person right and and by getting to know each other better we at least maybe have a better perspective as to why somebody feels the way they do or acts the way they do or what have you I'm wondering were there any did you go into this with any preconceived notions about somebody else that after hearing their story it made you think of them or think of who they are and how they are a little differently than what you did before yeah um back when we were doing the um uh in 2020 oh my God the certification all right 2021.

obviously and changing your schedule to pick up your child from spellball practice is not always easy either Ellen and Michelle have coached the bibbage spellball team this year in many years prior while we are proud of them for placing third in the state of Indiana we are very proud of the Priceless skills our students learned from these ladies during the season these include learning effective study strategies working as a team showing support to our teammates and competitors and setting goals congratulations to our Vivid spillball team thank you um I can announce them so we'll call your name if you can come and shake the board members hands and then we'll line you up for a picture Harper Clemens Micah dennert Audrey Johnson [Applause] Charles komarowski congratulations Will Lewis Ben Lopez Michael McNeil [Applause] Brooklyn Moore Juniper Paul Michael Rodriguez Dylan Chenault Chris wendelin there you go congratulations Jason West and Sloane wojnow [Applause] great job proud of you [Music] okay ready yeah get a big smile some rabbit ears [Applause] and I think it's and parents thank you for all your work and did you know that Miss Snow was the spell Bowl coach of the year for the state of Indiana [Applause] [Music] right here and then there was us which is good I hope not oh my gosh I just yeah all right the place feels empty now laughs my third agenda item is just to update the board on some of the things that Cindy Mrs Susan I heard on Friday down in Indianapolis at the legal seminar I had intended to talk about attorney Sheamus Boyce who's now a lobbyist who did a presentation on minimizing reporting requirements and state mandates which were all very interested in because there are many redundancies in what we have to report to the state in fact some of the things that they want reported regarding data they give us the data so then we can give it back to them in a different form so it feels like there should be some ways to extract that stuff so the interesting part about the presentation it was part talking about the things that they've heard from school districts about what can be eliminated or reduced but at the same time there were a lot of of the surveys that you do on your cell phone so that they can prioritize what they think we least want to be burdened with and so the the the final story to that will come during the session that starts in January so instead I'm going to Pivot and talk a little bit about Michelle Cooper her presentation on the pros and cons of Corporation Police Department it was it was good to know that the way we are conducting business is what the vast majority of people are doing in terms of engaging with the local towns and police departments to hire experienced officers who are already trained get them their special SRO certification and then we try to continue to work with the police Chiefs and the town councils to have these officers support our students and again It's tricky because many of these officers if they're working evening shifts doing supervision or providing security they were different type of hat than when they're in the school and so it's important for our administrators to get to know the officers build relationships and have those officers serve our students as a resource and so that's what we've been successfully doing um the other pieces that make it complicated is for the districts that engage with their own and hire their own Police Department all of those rules regarding police certifications from the Indiana Law Enforcement Agency are still required and so it would be a pretty big burden on individual School corporations to monitor that stuff that's why most of the schools and there are only a few that have their own Police Department actually have one of the people as a police chief so that person is responsible for making sure all the certifications are updated all trainings are in place in including the kinds of trainings you wouldn't do with a school so one of the things that the speaker was talking about was special training with vehicle Pursuit now I guess our police could be needing to do that if somebody created a problem at the school and then they were chasing them but it's not nearly as likely as what you know our our police unfortunately are forced to do on a Sunday or Saturday night at 2 A.M but the challenge again is to moderate the role of the sros when they're in our building we're pretty comfortable with what uh we we currently have going on and while we don't have total control of the officers we believe that our regular scheduled tri-town safety meetings as well as individual conversations with police Chiefs and Town Council Members allows us to have enough influence over the officers when they're in our schools and I give a lot of credit to our principals and assistant principals for building the kind of relationships with our officers so that they know how they can best support kids and it doesn't mean that they never have to wear their Police hat and possibly take somebody to the station because there's criminal activity it just means that in most cases they're able to be that officer friendly and support our students and so we are comfortable that our our model is is working for us and just for the boards refresher we did present on this at the Indiana School Board Association and got pretty decent reviews from them as well so the people who have not yet expanded their police presence in schools they attended they were interested in how we had different memos of understanding or contracts if you will with the different towns and they are a little bit different but they're pretty standardized and it's really helped us to have that presence in the school that we want any questions from anybody gosh that was good um my next thing is to talk a little bit about the legal ramifications of camera recordings this was another presentation we heard we continue to have situations where we may have an altercation and I want to remind everybody that our cameras are not monitored by somebody as you might see in like in the movies at a high-rise apartment building so what our cameras do is they archive events and we're able to watch the footage then the recording and go back and unravel at least one angle or one side of the story about what happened what we typically what we typically experience is when we have it on on a recording device and we don't have a good eyewitness testimony or the story between two people if we're using a fight as an example and the witnesses there's gray area we watch the the footage to try to piece it together what we current what we currently experience oftentimes is the parents want to see the video and It's Tricky when there's more than one person in that scene an informal survey in the room indicated that none of the people in the room had the technology the ability to blur out every face other than the person who you want to focus on but a couple interesting pieces came out of it one is that if if it is an incident with two combatants and if both parties agree that the other party can see the entire scene then you get the permission of the parent or an eligible student meaning an 18 year old high school student yeah that's okay if the other parent sees what happened then you're free to show that video to people the important thing that he emphasized is that while you you may have the inclination to show that video that recording to the parties no recording of the recording should take place in other words you should maintain the record and not give that record to somebody else who then can push it out elsewhere and so avoid that at all costs um and so that that was a little bit of a new thing for us because we do often want to show the video especially when somebody thinks that they played a very minor role when in fact they may have been an equal combatant or even the aggressor and so we'll continue to monitor what happens in this area but um our cameras help us to unravel incidents but I just want to say one more time for the record we don't monitor them so that we're not usually able to interject and stop things from happening just because we have a fair number of cameras across the district so that was from Friday any questions about that piece all right now the exciting part where we get uh Mrs Peterson to come and swear in Mrs Kelly and Mr Marshall you may know that in the past oftentimes we've done this at our reorganization meeting in January but the law does allow us to do it early and we just as soon knock this piece out so we can hit the ground running on January 3rd take it away Mrs Peterson I will do give me a moment no problem if you're please repeat after me I and state your name hi Howard Marshall do solemnly swear solemnly swear that I will support the Constitution of the United States of America and the Constitution of the state of Indiana and the laws of the United States and the state of Indiana I will Faithfully execute I will Faithfully execute the duties of my office as a member of the governing body of the Lake Central School Corporation so help me God by the authority vested in me I declare Howard Marshall and Nicole Kelly a member to be duly elected please join me in a round of applause and congratulations on your re-elections it didn't hurt a bit did it Howard all right my final item this evening is to go over the schedule of board meeting dates for next year as we discussed at our work session we are going to add back a second meeting in January that'll be January the 3rd it will be for us to conduct our basic reorganization business and we'll we'll also pile some claims in there for Mr James's request so it'll be a short meeting because the rest of the business of the board will take care of it the regular January 23rd meeting we inadvertently didn't look where we have to have the reorganization meeting done by January 15th of each calendar year so that meeting will be a 6 p.m meeting on January the 3rd the rest of the meeting dates on your schedule will be 7 P.M we have not confirmed yet with the board on next January we typically put that first meeting on this list so I'm going to declare that if you approve this those two meetings in January of 24 will be tentative we can still talk about those later in the school year when we get closer to it because the holidays get tricky for people so that's what we're going to do Tuesday January 3rd 6 p.m the rest of those dates 7 PM seek board approval for those meeting dates at this time do we have a motion I moved to approve the meeting stationed by Dr Medlin and I will second that any discussion hearing none all in favor aye motion passes thank you so we'll move right along to our director of Human Resources Personnel Mrs mucho thank you very much we are recommending the following Personnel items be approved move to approve motion by Mr Marshall second by Dr Malco any discussion questions hearing none all in favor aye motion passes thank you thank you move right along director of primary education Dr Bracy good evening I am seeking approval for the professional League requesting your packets we have a motion by Mrs Kelly second second by Dr Medlin any discussion questions hearing none all in favor aye aye motion passes thank you thank you in September the idoe notified all districts of the need to compare their current High ability program plan to a newly implemented rubric the wording had changed in many of the descriptions I notified our broad-based planning committee and we began to dissect the plan we had in place a broad place a a broad-based planning committee or a bbpc is required for any District that has a high ability program the purpose of the committee is to create plans and goals for the highability program our committee is made up of 15 members including teachers counselors social workers parents and administrators we had visuals and tables we've added them to our parameter I'm sorry in our plan we added visuals and tables to explain the parameters used to identify students for the high ability Services there are certain areas that had to be covered to meet the needs of the rubric you will see those in bold print at the top of each section we added the names and titles of all the BBC plant BBC to the plan Enlisted the steps needed for a student to be exited from the program our plan is also located on the website foreign did you say are there any questions are there any questions oh I don't always I don't always hear down here so so then basically what you were doing you were aligning our rubric with our document following the guidance from the state correct all right and I noticed she read off that you have parents on the broad brace planning committee correct and how often do you meet we meet three times each year three times in each year okay all right thank you for sharing that you're welcome I'm glad you're following the guidance of our state department thank you any other questions thank you our director of secondary education Mrs Castaneda thank you for my first item I am seeking your approval for the professional leave requests move to approve motion by Mr Marshall second second by Dr Malco any discussion all in favor aye aye motion passes thank you and for my second item I'm seeking your approval for the field trip requests move to approve those motion by Mrs Kelly and I will second that any other discussions questions hearing none all in favor aye aye motion passes thank you thank you our director of Stu student services Mrs gramalla thank you I am going to turn it over to Liz DeVries who is our El coordinator for the district and she's going to present just an update on our programming for English language learners it's going to be on the screen if you want to move down to see it foreign okay hi thanks for being here I know it's late but here we go this is just an update on our ell program so this is just an overview of Who's involved we go from a director all the way down to paraprofessionals um how do I identify our students every student in the state of Indiana has to fill out a home language survey once that survey is filled out if they have another language listed that student is screened if the student qualifies then we have a committee that gets together and comes up with a plan for them which is known as their ILP and there is annual testing every year so in 2014 um Indiana decided to join Wida we used to do last links now we're part of Wida and it's a very large Consortium these are all the states that are involved and then this is just a better view of all the states so it's nice when students come from a state that is what we call a weed estate because we already have their scores we have everything together this is the Wida access test and what what's involved the grade levels are kindergarten takes their own tests and then grades one two three through five six through eight and then 9 through 12.

except the return request and Page through the VHS math and science teacher effective other at the end at the end 2022 preschool year hey um oh there it starts to go yeah motion passes six zero and we'll miss Dave and Suzanne wish them the best in her future welcome back and welcome back John and yes that is the best days move on to your results look forward to for math okay I'm going to take a little responsibility for this because I really wanted to go back to this style of Report with the PowerPoint and I didn't get that information after the administrators and directors they will do this for the January results report we've showed you the edge of climber information in the past like last year for example and I don't think that that you see how we're using Edge of climber we've shared that with you with individual student progress as well as with grade level progress the problem with that is you don't necessarily get all of that information on a Wednesday or a Thursday when we make the board information public to you guys so we'll go back to this for the January results reports and the reports in the in the future you know we have this program called Edge a climber it's a One-Stop Shop with a data warehouse of State assessments map assessments uh student grades uh ACT scores and so on and so forth so having said that we'll go back and we'll put that results report to from the internet the PowerPoint format moving forward so I apologize that I said that was my fault not getting the information to the administrator so with that being said okay this is darling I can kind of try to tackle this with Matt and Dodie and Taylor potentially coming a little bit later so anyway so for our whole district is still taking a nap test so that's one of our pieces of data then we all took the Kansas assessment at degree levels as required by the state and the elementary we are we use um aimsweb for benchmarking and then we also use we also have star math that we do I'm not sure but I think the middle school does that at some of the grade levels as well so we have some different charts on that in the high school of course one of the big tests for them is the act which is on the PowerPoint um so we might look at that well Christy has that open I think we have a slide Judy shared some data just to show like how we're stacking up there it's probably waiting for that tomorrow there you go so this is just the five-year Trend it actually is for all subject areas you can see in 2022 our school average for math is 19.9 which is a half point above the state average there at 19.4 well there's a little bit of a drop you know when you're here I can't explain that to you but they did have almost all the kids that graduated last year 72 yes a 74 students that take that test which is in part that the you know the state helps pay for that test for I already take it one time so that's a high percentage of participation um I really can't speak anymore there was on there is kind of what Judy shared about that as well and then the next graph that's on there just shows um the five year Trend as well or the person who uh what they consider running for college level coursework in terms of a percentage so 36 percent of our kids show that they are ready for college local coursework in the math versus the state at 31 so um you know anytime that we are doing hydrogen averages anything for growth um but it's still I mean we're seeing lots of Articles come out right now in education that are saying like the scores across many different kind of students are taking a dip which is probably to be expected of the fact that you know there's some awesome instruction for you know a period of time well in person that was I was kind of a stuff that was coming out and they're talking about math and science scores are you know really dropping some academics so it appears that we have kind of maintained at least a state average there my my big question is is on the five year averages and all of these we've seen those went from of course not with the first year and then we've seen it abrupt down you know or either but the based on the numbers of the kids being tested we're testing everyone's Services back to like 2018 that was like Kaylee graduated in 2019 and that was not when like when she was a junior everybody was not taking that because they wasn't paying for that yet so you're having I mean the number of the kids tested in the state is uh some I think that's important I think that you're having more participation in this school so it's taking probably a broader look at all kids versus before you know maybe how often those are getting paid and I think the kids that were kind of calling writer wanted to be always ready we're taking that act early on where other people that weren't quite as ready they're taking that anyways I just kind of want to be able to explain that why that why all of a sudden the draws is that one thing I don't know if this factors into it sorry um having a senior but like some colleges now are getting away from like there for a while I was the big thing the ACT goes to how you got your scholarship I mean that's also a trend that's kind of um that's not as I mentioned how it's kind of either entitled with Matt I think those were only students that were needing to be assessed if they were struggling they didn't assess all students because if students were like I say above grade level doing just fine there was really no need if I remember correctly there's no need to assess we don't want to assessment Overkill if you will so that's why those two dots might be quite a bit lower if he ends up showing off I'll verify that they're with him here but if not so there's still going he texted me okay and then okay um we're doing well and we compare ourselves to the National Norms um you know we can look at that and kind of see when we look at some different reports that we don't get pulled into edgy climber like how many kids we have on the low how many kids we have the average how many kids we have an average of or above and so like when I looked at mine we had over 60 percent in the grades two through four above average or above so it was still performing strong I you know I can't speak to the other buildings really don't have access to their data in there but I think you know overall our kids continue to do well and keep working with those who are struggling the next couple of graphs are specific to my building because we're the only one that does things it's working so this kind of shows us um where kids in the fall place on their benchmarks I read are tier three and those are the kids that we look at providing additional instructional supports to the yellow is tier two and then green and blue there were that figures out a little bit different for our kindergarten first graders so they're not sure on there if it was you would see a large red bar for kindergarten we have a lot of needs at that grade level this year so we are really doubling down on our energy was there and then the next graph where am's web is on Concepts and applications which is more word-based problems applications of math so same thing so this this test one of the things we kind of called the temperature taker it kind of tells us we need to take a little closer look at in these term who gets those intervention supports and so we just use that kind of triangulated approach for determining those needs in our building and again thinking in terms of you want to see more blue and green less red that's the ideal scenario so one thing whenever we look at our aims like when you look at it something a little bit too hard because we always do try to see if we're getting that red down as the air goes on and historically we do I don't know if that you know this year because you're just finished your sparkle last week but um that's one of the ways that we kind of monitor our growth here and then the last graph we have is um our state assessments from the spring and math same thing the red is showing kids that are at level one which is the lowest level level two three and four we consider on on grade level or at Benchmark so level two is a good score level three is at grade level level four is at grade level with that rigor attached to it so the smaller red is better and I know that the middle school and high school are looking at those red areas there that they have and uh having discussions and addressing area addressing those areas one thing that I know for example by high school has put in place starting the second semester is a math uh I must say a map intervention piece and I don't know if Mrs Roper put that in her report or not but a math intervention piece as part of a a student's I'm going to say a student's class schedule because we have the ability to do that based on a schedule issue or schedule I guess it's a positive and like I said Jody can explain if we can talk about that a little bit more if she ends up itching her believer but they are looking at those two red areas because if we had heard Taylor and Jody and I have had a conversation about those areas and even Matt and I about a couple of those red areas that we want to we really want to focus on again reminder as Darla said three and four is Advanced knowledge if you will for the state assessments two is is its grade level appropriate again you want to try to you want to try to move kids from ones to twos that's that's a big thing and and twos to threes at possible and threes divorce if we you're not going to move a kid from one to four in a year it's just probably not going to happen unless there were some sort of dramatic issues that were dealing with when they had the test you know State assessment list that so again trying to move kids one level is very very important and progress kind of like what darling had mentioned so anyway one thing this doesn't show in this graph but I did pull every district report um for Math and so like comparing ourselves to the state again this doesn't show on that graph but at grade three we were 14 points above the state average at grade four we were 13 points Above This Day average grade five was below the state average by nine points grade six was one point below grade 7 was 13 points above grade eight was three points below and grade 10 was at the state average so the you know the trails if you're comparing this to other districts in the state you know were you know we're at the at or above the state averaging almost every grade level um so it doesn't mean there's not room for improvement and just you know if you see a big red bar I'm thinking you know it could just be you know you'd also have to consider under the test and you know how everybody else is doing on it again we've had some awesome instruction so it takes time to fill some of those gaps right so when I read that in job he's real good Interventional are those kids going to be required to take that are they just going to put them in a class or if I remember right yes that they are big yes or trouble yeah they are struggling it's going to be a requirement okay other questions that you have one thing that's interesting Darla did mention is that you could because math is the first results Report with math so you can see what's their growth because that's what you uh that's what you guys want to see is what you want to make sure that there's growth inquiring our staff is addressing the students I can I can assure you they are harder addressing and using Edge acquire effectively especially especially to make sure the students are progressing and developing and growing other questions just let us know because I'm sure we can get it although you'd accept the math results are very important as a reasonable interpretation of the board of education's results policy okay motion pass to six zero move on closing items debriefing again I'd like to thank the rotary and he appreci shield for the donations from the purchase program it's awesome and for coming up with ideas for ourselves every idea is as you were talking about the brainstorm okay thank you for coming I really appreciate it unfortunately right

we didn't experience that right away I think parents were dropping kids off the first part of the semester as the time wore on we saw more and more students drop and so in aggregate in total just raw numbers on students were down about 118 on an average daily membership where we count kindergarteners as 0.5 we're down 101 on that a vast majority of those are White River students not all of them but a majority are and so I think it didn't hit right away but it started to impact us the last couple of months more we also have a group of students numbering 20 or 30 that go back and forth when it gets cold they leave when it warms up they come back and so that's that's part of been part of the dynamic for last year eight years we've been here so this uh we began the year with sr3 with about 2.5 million dollars and Our intention was to use that for learning lost makeup we did that by keeping class sizes artificially slow meaning or lower meaning we knew we couldn't sustain it but we agreed we need to try to keep these class sizes small we didn't anticipate some of the cohorts being so small we're down 34 in kindergarten I didn't anticipate that I guess we'd be closer to you know 105 110 students we're 90 students we're down in a couple of grade levels a little lower and then we're up in a couple to offset it we're lower at the junior high and I think a lot of that uh loss on the White River Side I think we're down 34 at the elementary on the White River Side maybe as many as 40 and we're down about 35 or 40.

we need yes that has been our goal from the beginning um and principals have been super supportive everybody in the district's been super supportive and we want to continue this messaging to the community and try to get in as many as these free and reduce applications as possible um the good news is though is we've worked out an agreement and have an mou with the districts at Exodus that if for whatever reason this program doesn't work out and we go below and if we go into the red and the 510 Sodexo will cover the difference and push us back up to zero so no matter what happens it's not gonna you know the everybody the district won't have to supplement the 510 account so it's a great thing and we get to continue feeding all the the students for free and can you discuss a little bit why this percentage is important this year yes that's a good point so this is what we're doing uh we're operating what's called our base year and how this is really set up is our base year is based off of the eligibility that we're getting for these applications and then that number is consistent for the next three years meaning that if we don't get the numbers that we're looking for this year it's it's going to be kind of a rough three years that we may not be able to do everything that we want we wanted so like I said it's just I'll hit it again we really want to get these applications in and get us to around above 60 at least our goal I believe was 64 is what we originally uh discussed um this is something fun we've been doing I just kind of wanted to share and this is really targeted at the high school students but it's a program called my detex which helps us really focus um on a student-centric menu and we're really trying to leverage technology with these guys because that's the language that they're speaking at this point so what we have is uh it's a number so it's 82257 and all of you are probably familiar with this at one point or another but you text a keyword and we have bought a bunch of different keywords right and if the student texts that keyword to this number which is owned by my D text which we have a contract with it will generate a survey that we have created on our end and what we're doing is we're using that to get the students feedback and I have an example here um so last week we decided to do a survey and say Hey you know kids we have specialty pizzas right we have your basic uh your basic pizzas but we do a specialty one it's like what do you guys want here's some really fun options give us your feedback I want you to decide what's going to be on the mid and this is the back end and this is what I'm seeing and as you can see I think that's 60 was that 62 ish uh but it was about I think 12 and a half percent of all the students are eating are participating in this program so they have a say what's actually being on the menu um that's what we're doing with this we have one actually going right now is we have a potential line that has 15 different rotations there and we're letting the students decide I mean we know which ones they kind of typically like the top five the other ones that I really want to touch but the top five are their favorites so we put that on there and be like hey what do you want to do for the next two weeks type adventure and you could do this right now I type adventure to 822-56 or five seven well I have it on the next slide um and then we can actually get the data from these kids and get the feedback there's no direct communication texting it's all automated and messaging and message messenger um if we go to the next slide so the question then becomes okay and this is another really good tool so we have a way to gather feedback from these students how do we get that information to them right how do we communicate to them one of the great ways we do this is through another program that we have called up show so we actually purchased two TVs for the high school and then one for the middle school and the one for the middle schools we don't have a lot of feedback with those kids they don't have cell phones and they're kind of younger so what we do is we just kind of give it as an opportunity to drive home our branding with our Middle School theme which is foodie and then so it has an entire slideshow dedicated to foodie that our marketing environment to put together lots lots of colors lots of fun stuff that kind of entertains them while they're in the line and drives home our message but for the high school we're actually able we're actually able to display on here any kind of information we want whether so so we've really been using it for at this point is you can kind of think of as a PowerPoint but it's digital so I can sit at my computer and create a digital slide and advertise to these kids and tell them exactly you know what we're looking for so as you can see on this right side um this is from last week some of the stuff's old it's just text cougars to 82257 and you can go ahead and get your vote in right now it's adventure as I said it's been updated this I had to submit this last week and on the left you can kind of see our display and how everything's set up in the line so it's right in front of the kids and while they're waiting to get something to eat the messaging is popping up in the screens in front foreign up is we do a 500 uh scholarship with Chef Bernie over in culinary this this is really a fun partnership that we we do every single year typically do it come you know later but she incorporates it into her curriculum on any kind of you know whatever she's doing at that point in time um this one was baking and they decorated the cakes and for those of you who don't see it this is Toy Story themed um but we actually did this there was five girls who did a cook-off and this young lady in the top right one last year but we'll be doing this again uh here in the spring and if you go to the next slide it's it's kind of busy but you can see all of our contestants and some close-ups of them doing you know making this stuff and it's the end product which is fun we'll go to the next one and this is another really fun thing we have coming up here in the spring and it's future chefs it's been kind of weird uh the past two years just because of covet like everything else but now we're finally getting back into the norm so we'll be hosting this um just like we did for you covered which was a lot of fun so basically we have a theme and then the students will go ahead and submit recipes based on this theme we'll pick the top five and then we'll have judges go ahead and judge a live competition like a cook-off with these kids this is a national competition done throughout the entire country with Sodexo accounts and then it goes up from there so it starts at the district level which is us and then it goes region and then it goes country so that's kind of fun so we'll actually meet judges so and if you want to get out and have some fun that's a great one come with empty stomachs on the next one and I have some these are again these are kind of busy slides but I wanted to get all this stuff in because I think it's a lot of fun we again we partner um with Chef Bernie who's fantastic and she brings kids over that actually help us and the young students love this um we don't want them sitting there just Dyson away so we actually and we can't watch them all at the same time so we have these students come and assist these young kids and the kids love it you can see the bottom right surprise table so there is something you know we create some competition and there's actually some stuff to win there and then the other slides are just everybody just engaged fun and then the final piece of this is I also just want to put out a reminder that we do have a head start contract which is like another eight to nine thousand meals roughly depending on what kind of goes on there if there's a closure obviously it's going to be um but it's fun because we're actually feeding all the pre-kid students at Territorial and then all the other ones at hit start and with that thank you for your time quick question yes so applications can still be received even though school has started yeah we want to keep getting them in Non-Stop until the end yeah and we just want to make that point to anyone that's watching online your application in all right and in particular if they haven't submitted an application turn it in whether they think they think they're going to make it or not you just never know and because we're Chase we do try to chase down those that have it turned in um let us decide it the information doesn't go anywhere except for the school because it's it's uh income information that we need um and so that doesn't go off to the state it doesn't go off to anybody it just stays at the school so I want to make sure that that's that's clear it's not yeah and and so if whether they think they're gonna be eligible or not please do the application and let us decide that do preschoolers count also anybody that's enrolled it's an industry all right thank you so much all right so you have the superintendent report in front of you um let's start with enrollment there is a on the second page there is a kind of a summary of enrollment um we have 2451 students currently enrolled that includes our preschool which are not included most of our preschool kids are not included in ADM or about half aren't and so um that's that includes those tuition in kits for our preschool along with everyone else K-12 um our projected ADM is at 22.64.

um I was with a student or a period that like I knew and they were like they're a pretty shy person um but like you know like you don't know why and um after that they told me their story um about coming out and joining like theater and stuff uh like then you know like I learned like why they were like so they had like so many laws of them were so cautious when talking to me um originally like because I've had them like in class before but um now I know and now like it's like it's really cool for the Show excellent yeah yeah very cool I have another testimony to share from this year's cookies and conversation I was paired with a teacher who's very outgoing and very energetic and like one of the reasons that she shared with me is that she had this amazing teacher when she was in high school that had like the same energy and that is what inspired her to become a teacher and bring that energy so it was really it was a nice story for her to share and really interesting to like hear why she wanted to teach and why she went into the profession awesome and then what did you have to do to get the certification we just uh like participate like we we led the experience uh we had um like two other like underclassmen and a group of four uh we were actually meeting our group four together we it was awesome um we had like a great sign our energy of the group was just great um so we just had to like lead that and um yeah if I could add on to that so uh we did this about a year ago it was a full day training we did bring in uh narrative four which is this International Organization I think at the time we were probably the largest and longest training they've done for a school and they've worked with some schools in the area with students people yeah so we were really fortunate um and the interactions were far longer than the cookies and conversation interactions so it was a very lengthy activity a lot of practice with empathy so yeah I think Kai's downplaying kind of the intensity of the training but yeah a lot of work our world needs a lot more of this so congrats to all of you training we had a different modules and then actually going through the experience we all walked away with a certificate and I got to bring staff to be pretty cool it'll survey all your life yeah being able to facilitate yeah yeah it's an art well being able to listen is is really an important skill in being able to tell your story to understand why it's important for you to tell your story too right absolutely So yeah thank you thank you because I just wanted to say thank you to them too and one of the things that struck me about this um not to mention all the powerful people we talked about but and our five district values specifically about caring and belonging and it's a nice like Cadence and Segway for tonight we have you know our department chairs are here to present new courses and it's a nice reminder of that balance we strike between that caring and belonging along with providing that rigorous curriculum for our students so I just think they're helping all of us remember that Baseline of caring and belonging always has to come first at the heart of everything we do so I just want to say congratulations to all of you on YouTube Miss Martinez nice job thank you thank you okay student board member questions and comments who's up first okay um so to start off during the holiday season students at Downers Grove North have been starting to help the community in many different ways and to start off I'm not sure if everyone knows the organization called Toys for Tots and so we had a basketball game for the boys last Friday to help bring more people together and then bring unwrapped gifts and then also we have a basketball game for the girls tomorrow to help with the same organization and just make it a greater community and just getting people to join in and also with that there are several clubs at school who are also trying to help with donations during the holidays because we know it's a tough season for those people who can't afford it and so we have an organ we have a club called I will um which is collecting like holiday lights that people aren't going to use after the holidays and they're doing that up until January 13th which is giving some time after the holidays even then to collect lights that maybe aren't working anymore and then also we have um an empowerment club which is um doing this type of Drive where students are able to buy their own stockings and stuff them for children and then they donate it to children who are nearby in the community which is also really nice to see um for festivities in school I know we do a lot of activities during the holidays to support the students who got through the semester so we're doing our second annual gingerbread house competition and then throughout the week we have several days days where we have different things going on such as tomorrow we have gift cards being handed out for our coffee shop Wednesday we have hot chocolate being passed out to all the students and then Thursday I know we're setting up there's this very big inflatable snow globe where students are able to go inside and take pictures so that's definitely something great um two other things I want to say is that Downers Grove North does the mod Pizza on Ogden which is also a nice way to get students involved in the community and just raising more money and so that is going to be um December 13th which is tomorrow and then also we had the Mosaic which is a very big performance for our school for the holidays once again bringing everyone together I know I wasn't able to go because of track and I had other things to do but I saw tons of people going in there were elderly very young children and it was just a great thing to see over at South we also are in the holiday spirit we had our holiday plane I think it was last weekend and I didn't get to go to it but I have some friends who were in it and they said that every night was packed and sold out so that was just a fun thing to offer the community to start getting in the Christmas spirit um we had our cocoa in the Commons last Friday that was the last Friday that we had school so we had that again which is again was just staff and students connecting getting some free hot chocolate on your way to class best way to start the morning uh with finals coming up students are just like in their groove studying everyone's looking forward to Christmas break it's kind of been like a long semester but we've all made it through and I think uh we're all just looking forward to Christmas break a little no homework hopefully um and we've been uh our winter sports have been starting up so we had a few boys basketball games and this weekend for the girls basketball team is a big weekend we play North on Saturday so if you're looking for something to do this weekend South's hosting north um and just Athletics have been ramping up our teams have been pretty successful and we're just looking forward to continuing to making progress with um making changes to our new schedule and just adding new activities and resource like we've been doing in the second semester But ultimately it's been a good semester and we're looking forward to a break Luca where can we bring our um our lights that are no longer working I've got a few strings to bring here I'm sure they're going to be I know I know that of boxes and like little stations that say so or there's like a certain room that you can go to um for that club um but usually we do collect a lot I know that that's definitely been going on since I started in 2019 and um it's just great being able to see that people are willing to actually bring them in instead of just throwing them out and they're putting it to good to use mm-hmm and um will there be a reminder going to out to the staff that we don't want to see a lot of homework over Christmas break they're always because that was that was the uh that was the content yeah that goes out every year all right it'll be in tomorrow's message very good okay thank you ladies moving on um we need a motion for the Board of Education to approve the minutes of the November 21st 2022 business meeting and the December 5th 2022 closed meeting so moved second Terry and shrill I think aye aye Mr Espinoza all right and Nancy cup aye the minutes are approved okay um we would usually move on to the reception of visitors right now yeah we are we are but we have no slippers we have to do it before okay because it would be any comments about action items but we have no slips so okay we'll move right on to we're gonna move on to the consent agenda but yes um does any we're going to talk specifically though first about to the donations does any other member have anything else they want to talk about no well we've had two very lovely donations to our district and um one um glenberg who's a South High Alum is here with us today and he's representing the family of Carol Berg whose family made a generous donation to the Fine Arts Department of so I don't know if you want to do no I just wanted to thank the Berg family for their generous donation I know that our fine arts department will put all of these materials to work and I appreciate you being here tonight and supporting our students all right thanks sure yes please so that's very wonderful I know my mom you know Buster would appreciate it a little about who we are and why there's this connection it was the District 99 our family the bird family was one of the first 200 families in Woodridge and the house was built in 1959 in early 1960 went to school of Woodridge Edgewood Goodrich eventually at South I feel very old tonight listen I feel you I went to South 71 to 75.

next is Mark Newell Mark has been my principal almost my entire career at Columbus East and he is truly a great leader that leads by example and then the next and again very special night for for him and myself is Charles Edwards I spent a lot of time with Charles in the Dean's office at Columbus East and because of his creativity splitting the Deans and assisted athletic director job put me in the position I'm in today so I'm truly grateful for those three gentlemen I'm excited I'm excited to take over the role and truly serve the coaches and student athletes at Columbus East High School for many years to come so thank you thank you excited too congratulations foreign [Laughter] [Applause] okay well good evening besides that awesome few minutes there to bring in two new leaders into our school corporation at least Elevate them into new positions we have some additional recognitions this evening students in the back we're going to recognize you here in just a little bit I thought for a moment a moment with having these great spellers in the room that before Charles and David were approved we were going to ask them to spell some words but I decided that we wouldn't do that so Charles and David you have to you owe me later that we pulled back on on doing that but we have three board members here to recognize tonight it's been a wonderful evening thus far we talked about at Columbus North High School the last board meeting with all the students that we were recognizing from Columbus North just the the Joyful Noise that was in the room that evening it's been very similar here this evening with again recommending these two individuals into their new positions as well as celebrating three outgoing board members and so those who are able to be here for the reception that start at six o'clock thank you for doing that I need to give a credit to like sector cleaning up but our food service department which is the biggest restaurant in Bartholomew County they serve about 8 000 people per day they cater these kind of events and just did an outstanding job so if you had a chance to get some food and drink that is our food service department from bcsc so thanks to them again thanks to all of you for being here and then thanks to the three outgoing board members that we have here this evening so these three individuals have a combined a total of 35 years of experience serving this board Dr Jill has been on the board for 16 and a half years Kathy day off Dwyer for 14 and a half years and Doctor builds for four years so 35 years between the three of them and serving this community and the kids of our community and that's what I'd like to thank them the most about is this is a position that is a heck of a lot difficult than maybe what it looks like although with covet maybe it did show how difficult position can be with all of that that came about over the last few years they didn't necessarily sign up for that particular situation but they had to make tough decisions through that as they have to make tough decisions all the time and my experience with each of the three ladies that we were recognizing tonight is it's all it's all been about kids they've challenged me with recommendations that I'm bringing forward in terms of how does that recommendation fit the best needs of our kids in our school corporation so as I work on recommendations and if you're not familiar with how a board works the school board reacts to the recommendation the superintendent so I don't want to bring bad recommendations forward because it's not going to work and allow us to move forward so I have to work through a process to make sure that when I make a recommendation I believe that we're going to be able to move forward with that and so as we're talking through those we take time to develop those again I appreciate your challenges to me to make sure that the best interests of kids were always in sight and then the next thing is that and related to the best interest of kids I see the heart of an educator in all three of these individuals Kathy during her Reflections talked about special needs and special education in her love and passion for that department in our school corporation which I believe is is an excellent one and maybe one of the best in the state and then Dr biltz has been a classroom teacher and has been involved with preparing kids college students for the workforce and Dr shed has spent much of her career at Indiana University I think IUPUI and then IU Bloomington in the school of education preparing our educator leaders for for the state of Indiana and elsewhere so they have that heart they've demonstrated that I just want to thank them for their time here serving the board so I'm just going to call each of you up to get your plaque and if you wish would like to say something you have the microphone to do that if not that is totally up to you and you also have Reflections later and I know sometimes that's when the words all of a sudden start start flowing so Dr bilts if you come forward to me that's very good job [Laughter] next is Dr Jill shed I'm downsized doctor should ask what does it say so that's a good idea doctor said I will read what the plaque says on behalf of the students faculty and the community Bartholomew Consolidated School Corporation would like to recognize and then name years of devoted service and valuable leadership to the bcsc board of school trustees this particular black goes to Kathy day off Dwyer foreign yeah so it's all about focusing on Learners so I'm excited to ask Mr Payne and Miss Mindy Summers to come up that we can celebrate our state champions from Central Middle School so I'd like to thank you for the opportunity to recognize some of these amazing students at Central Middle School just to give you a little background since Mrs Summers has taken over our spell Bowl team they were state finalists in 2015 16 and 17.
