more academics that led you to go to Snow. Well, obviously the academics played a big part in it, but I know the team's solid team, so helped my process. It makes a big difference. Now, where where else uh were you looking into? If you can share um St. Angelo, I'm Keen State. I had interests from schools all over, but those were my kind of main focuses. And how does it feel to have the process done of knowing where you're going to go to school? It's very relieving to have it done, figured out. Talk a little bit about your time as an Indian. You know, any memories that stand out on the field? Um, my time as Indian was great. Started as a freshman playing splitting time with Sean Smileac who was real good influence growing up. He was a real great player. Um, I don't know.

Baldwin said we had our first meeting I believe November 26 and it was basically a bunch of representatives from all of the different conferences in the CIA see and we all got together and brainstorm different initiatives to encourage class-act behavior in our school and I actually showed our video that you just saw and basically we were kind of like the role model for like a lot of other schools I had people coming up to me and saying oh my gosh oh that's a great idea are like your school has so much spirit and so it was a lot of like it was kind of really like humbling for me because I had never seen other schools really and they all really appreciated our ideas so we kind of set a standard and I got a lot of new ideas to bring back to the school as well and yeah they loved our school and they're taking our advisory board idea mr.

I've tried to kind of take a leadership role in the team from when I was young cuz a lot a lot of those guys don't play club and it's it's tough being around people that don't know the game 100%. So I've been trying to step up and take control. Anything you're going to miss about your time tonight? Uh the locker room. Definitely the locker room. Thanks Tyler. Trevor, uh kind of same stuff. What went into the decision of going to Bryant? Um, I mean, I visited a few other schools and I did overnights at a few schools and I think that just meeting all the kids and stuff and spending time with them, it was just it was a lot of fun and I think that just made my decision pretty easy. And I mean, I got to practice with the team. I got to work out with a few of the kids and I mean, I just I liked it a lot.

Baldwin created with all the students and many of them are starting them at their own schools as well so he's very beneficial Jania first of all it's fabulous I'm so pleased with the entire program initiative you know I set it up you know I started the first few meetings and now the students leading it they do the surveys and they come back with positive change for us with a line I mean we're there for them I need to know what they want and they do a great job in the meeting think they're phenomenal we have great great kids thank you see for that I mean that when I 10 games the energy and the it's just so positive and it's great and for them to take ownership over it that's what matters what really counts right thank you Jamie and I are gonna run back off to the basketball game thank you very much thanks Jamie Thanks video yes so purchase purchase order for high school generator has been issued the lead time is 26 weeks and the transfer switch and additional equipment the lease times 14 weeks so but there's plenty of prep work to be done in anticipation for the delivery of the equipment we're still waiting on a final inspection of the press box at the high school possibly next week for the final sign-off by oil required town agencies Wi-Fi and communication is continuing and hopefully we've done that permit process soon the high school HVAC bidding is almost complete we're hoping to a word one project to one of the two bidders shortly our head custodian of high school resignation is effective as a Friday the position has been posted and internal and external candidates are currently interviewing for this position which will begin in early January we want to thank this has the current had custodian for all the hard work and dedication to Brookfield high school and wish them well in their future endeavors and a special thank you to Dan Kolb well and can post and our custodians and vendors who have made all this wonderful progress as sure possible alright moving on to France so the Finance Committee met on December 10th we have a pretty standard agenda Ken reported the November results were very similar to what we had seen in October no significantly different variances that we've seen and and to boil it down we have a significant have some over run in in special education transportation and under one in salary so those are the two big bearings as a rat there's a bunch of other small office appliances but those are the two were keeping our focus on as part of that we went through the special education transportation which was a follow-up from the prior month and we walked through the specific drivers of that and every one of them was kind of you know they were very situational and and and unavoidable of you Frank there wasn't much opportunity to offset dose so we're continuing to have to deal with that and we'll through the report here for an example you know and it without getting any type of specialist a difficult subject that way ace - who is going to a new school where they had bus ride shared in the past but couldn't ride share anymore so now all suddenly has a single one right that that costs us more money yes it's that sort of thing that we continue to look for right sharing opportunities but until it shows up that it's something we just have to deal with so we talked about the 2019-20 budgets we had as a board we had just received the books so there were a lot of questions we did talk a little bit about the status quo budget and a background on that well as our our deliberations in the next two meetings will spend fund on that so I'm not I'm not expecting to go into that detail we also did a preliminary review of the capital plan and we talked about the NAM laps in front of both of those are on the agenda that's that's moving on to the consent agenda recommend a motion that the board approve the items listed below on the consent agenda is recommended resignations and new hires okay all in favor aye thank you okay going on to new business before we start the new business going to make a motion to delete new business side of C and E from the agenda as the policy committee is not ready to bring this work yet second discussion all in favor aye all right so first on the list be happy a Key Club trip correct oh well sorry recommend motion that the board approve a trip for the VHS keiki Club to attend a district convention in Springfield Massachusetts from Friday April 5th 2018 to Sunday April 7 2000 19 as requested by BHS teacher Jennifer diamond and he chose principal mark Elana mr.

Um, I think just the whole time, I mean, I just I enjoyed it a lot. We got along with all the kids and I think that was definitely what made me go there. And then in terms of the whole recruiting process and everything, were there other schools that you were considering looking into? Oh, yeah. There was a bunch of schools from around here. I mean, you get stuff schools from all over the country, but I mean, I wanted to stay close next to my family and my brothers and stuff, and I mean, I wanted to compete at the highest level, and I think this was the best way to do it. Now, you've obviously known for a little bit too that you were going to go to Bright.

I know, you know, I've interviewed you several times. You know, you're probably one of the biggest prodies in in the program. Could you talk a little bit about your legacy? You know, what you're going to be leaving behind here at Dermath High. Um, I mean, I think I did very well. I think hopefully I'll have one of the best records we've ever had here. And I think when I'm here, we this is the best we've ever done as a team, too. Last year was like the best record we ever have. The first time we won our conference. Graham like already provided you guys to some information about the conference itself and we go on every year to really go and learn about new leadership opportunities for the kids for district 4 opportunities as you know Key Club is an international organization as well as she really get more information on leadership opportunities of the kids themselves not take in terms of the district itself we go to Springfield Massachusetts from April 5th to 8th April 7th we usually leave around 11 o'clock on that Friday so we're only missing about three hours of school we stay at the Sheraton Hotel and Springfield Mass it's not 162 dollars per student they before for meals themselves it's two dinners and two breakfast meals and we actually work with Kiwanis very closely so they provide a cot they pay for the cost of the bus and we can keep the cost of the field trip down itself do you have any questions for myself work really for our student at harsh this is something to all Key Club students members or just those who are seeking to run for office so for this actual conference yes it is open to all Key Club members and it's mainly used for like we usually like show it as a conference to go ahead and well yeah it's a concert it was a conference mostly for people that are trying to beat on new officers or like attempting to run for another officer position because it gives you a lot of exposure about how the actual system works cuz actually at the actual conference the actual numbers that attend are able to vote for the higher levels of like positions within the actual Key Club organization known like as the district governor district secretary the other district positions so yeah it just gives good exposure to all the students and in case they want to go up and try to run for other decisions how many students from the high school normally go like last year I usually have anywhere between five and ten students at times okay any other questions all in favor hi hi great thanks good luck have a good time thanks for selling thanks adder before we move on on the agenda I brought this up a couple of times and I was like to ask again I really I always go badly I'd love to hear from the Clubman leaders both the advisor and students I always go badly that we're bringing them out to a meeting at night and I really would love to have the standard trips that the kids take we know that they are right in your walk forward in one else right that we can all just say here's a ten standard trip so that we have special agenda items only on the ones that are had to kind of come out of the pool and I really would love to do that we could do that in the summer months the or their boats will start it up because there there are no come on first time you deliver a little work to stuff just remember what are the ones that are on the agenda but I really believe we could be more very usable yeah I'm gonna make that requesting as much as I'd love to hear from the groups we can have that as our spotlights I think would be easier thank you I think there's like eight to ten standard you know we know there's always risk in air trap there's a couple key clauses robots there's you know there there's there there's often some couple of athletic related ones swimming team Florida held up every year so there's a standard set we might as well just have on a single page here's the list of basic information as ice questions once and then thank you thank you now we're talk about in a couple of oh yeah okay from there we have the capital projects discussion this is just a recommended action all right ken gave everybody dude much easier to read so so so clarify majors are just ten introduced this so the majority of folks here at the table through either the Finance Committee subcommittee or the facilities subcommittee had a chance to go through this the this capital this 10 year capital plan proposal for the board to discuss as an entire board tonight was a labor frank frankly a labor of love I mean we worked with tacked on as part of this and we all talk about tact on the ARCA at the architect group on the new school project but the other half of their charge was to build a condition study hall for our facilities and recommend a capital plan going forward for each of the buildings to really help us develop that so they've done that they work closely with Ken and Dan to make this happen right through the Facilities Committee and after finding somebody last Monday and so we've gone through it there's discussions to be had because we're talking about the new school project and if that works out and goes through we certainly won't need a lot of work tackleberry and we have to discuss what kind of work we would put in a center school while that works itself out over the next couple of years and then the town determines what they want to do so with that I actually like to turn it over to to the Bob or perhaps the joy or DEP you know from the committee's a conversation or kind of starters they want to go with and then or can you want to add that's what I just said can I just answer the question sure so we're looking at this as an approval of the 10 year capital plan but for year 1 is this the listing of capital projects that will be submitted budget wise so are you looking at this as a yes that's what the if the board agrees it meeting here one yes yes okay and the year to remind you the mean is a year one was in detect on column used to see her immediate the list of capital improvements for center school is amazing and I think points to the need yes for a new school if we look at you know every year what's what is needed so is all the Centers for money needed if we get a rule to proceed with this whole project I think that would depend on what the town plans on doing with the building so the first year estimate of 1.8 million dollars of improvements at center school is how much it let's assume they decide them all fall how much would that [Music] probably very little if anything therapy's gonna mock bugs you can see the items that they had on the list were paving replacing windows and doors security upgrades so I think if they were in mothballs the link it would just be maintaining and not the laser sight weld everyone actually do with it you're gonna have a different use of the building you might reconfigure the parking spaces and be a waste to everything as is although I would say if we're going to have students in there for another couple of years of the security upgrades and as we can see with huckleberry as well know that's what we have net probably is just a security upgrades because we know if part of our plan is pop wary the existing hot where it will be mala were able to build a new school yeah when we met in Finance Committee we talked about recasting the center school plan to be the ones you would need to do any mountain and another section for you know what you might do or to keep right and we didn't I need to do that right yeah we I I think we agreed to bring it as is to this to the full board because this is what the Facilities Committee so on agreed to move forward but I agree that that would be a better way to present center school so centers for probably looking at tabling the not tabling for just putting on a different column per se about paving a concrete and exterior windows and doors yes security upgrades and enhancements that go forward how about that the film on glazing and so that's a discussion we had remember at the castle talked about safety film on on first of all we talked about that that's about their 166,000 and again with kids in it for another four years every three-and-a-half potentially depending on our schedule these are things we just should be discussing but I agree the window and or replacements unless it has to do with security and the paving if the schools going to ultimately either be mothballed or have a totally different use again can smite the parking lot may very well be reconfigured old they so why there's probably some areas it will need really needed within the next three years and sheriff do that what's the what's the breakdown in the the million and change in the control systems for the high school that's the the entire HVAC system pretty much has no controls right now this is a b2b baby okay so for example Collette the the ECAC work we're doing on the auditorium now that would be a standalone system until we approve funds to tie as all the additional sounds every building into one area where we can absolutely also remotely as well from smart fathers so do do each of these projects have a detailed boss not not it out cost estimate but here is the components here's my comp this thing costs a million dollars here's why this that cost $300,000 did you know that's it's we're gonna be doing these sub projects and each one of those has a bit of work to offer look I believe Tecton does have that I don't have that with me me but yeah so obviously we would have to I think we need to do that at one of our January so yes you know just have a session where we go through for a half an hour and go through how a presentation on I see two important things a prioritized list across all the schools you know what's the most important what's critical was the most very important what's a thing we do find as a matter of course and then secondly Dell in especially the higher cost ones you know go into the moment here's what that entails and why is it costs what it costs because we can't go this at 4 million all it was a performance for seventy four point four seven three is like ten times what's in the current budget so we need to have a much more disciplined and detailed analysis of long before it goes on before London of the world finance right because we don't have that we can't defend it so I think that would be thinking about all the things I've seen in the budget so far this is the one where Debbie tell you so angry that's just my view I mean I asked the board for some direction on center school would you like us to really focus in on immediate paving knees so we break down you know what could be postponed if you know with the scenario that let's assume we get the school project and all of that going forward to the building will not be used as a school but over the next three years we have to do X hating if there's safety issues sure and similarly the the doors and windows we can take a look at that if there's any obviously for security we need to take care of those if it's more for each and there's some hold off you know lessen the blow in year one basically yeah that's right I mean I would do our vote on the school is before the budget is completed correct actually lately Marsha the January 15 me at the referendum is March 5th so if it if we do the referendum March 5th that's just as the Board of Finance is starting their deliberation on budget they may see in the first yes so I think the analyzing a if it's approve and if it's not yep is very helpful to offsets helpful for fun yes so as they think that our wafer up should be yeah and focusing in on you year one by the way great piece of work on a ten-year plan yeah no this is there's a lot of depth here I want to say it's great to have a plan like this week you know until two years ago this is make any better and better each on you doing in large part thanks to technics expertise really it is right and well different facets of expertise you get into the pits of the schools literally underneath tools looks ready yeah I agree that's why we hired on the way unfortunately it's a big bill yeah so and it's not the hard part about the bill is you can't really borrow to do that because we're facing biggest borrowing history so the Board of Finance is not going to be interested in doing a lot of projects that require additional borrowing so this is going to be it's going to take a lot of in-depth discussion of the floor plans before they get through this budget or they'll just literally strike everything and I think this is a big piece of work and we made sure Marsha has this as well as she's thinking about scenarios scenarios and modeling things like that she's aware that so is mr. Dunn and the huckleberry is just the one item is that basically assuming it got it gets us right so it does and whereas Center assumes that it is well the Sun as soon as you have to redo it so we're you here we've made an assumption on the center what we have over but we haven't made an assumption on sir well with Kokomo has a this plan right here we've assumed that we would get the new schools that we would need to put anything in October and we're assuming that federal summers enemies purpose is not multiple yeah right yeah I gotcha so that's assuming that this whole plan is going to testify yes yes okay yes we would call that if approved option eight that's what even but even the if approved option a has two parts sure yes I think you would do to repurpose the building and things you would do sure any as increments I just wanted small thank the demolish the portables and it was in here be far out was eerie you're right you're right that's where we have that years yeah that would be here three know your four we're four because we have to wait till after the students are out and we'd be looking at before you got it thank you seen underneath everybody well I could need to have at this point a plan B in the event that the new school project doesn't pass by March 5th so that we're not crunching in eight weeks to come up with a new list of capital projects before the budget so similar plan for culinary circle you do that and we have the imagination from that's your plan a plan B yeah and this and that necessary forward enough combat we bring that to the January 2nd regular board meeting this yeah I just I'm kind of picturing the material we need to understand and the picture of the material refining Board of Selectmen need to understand in order to truly embrace a capital investment a single she's not gonna do it like us it's good start yes good sir any other questions before we move on to greater detail next meeting with this and I think in that plan B we should include you know not just like a very book center school as well if there's anything hello here right that would be your sister okay all right thank you girl we will revisit this January okay moving on to what was agenda item D the new policy 5140 44.1 recommend a motion that the board approve new policy number five one four four point one restraint and seclusion for a first reading as recommended by the policy so to me certain so I'll just invite dr.

Thanks, Char. Hannah, um, you've been going at this for a little while trying to figure out where you want to go. What went into the decision to St. Mike's? Um, I also did an overnight at a couple different other schools. And St. Michaels is just beautiful. The campus, I love the location. I love skiing, so up north is perfect. And the girls on the team just have a really nice vibe. they they're have a similar humor like I do. We just fit really well. And was that the thing that that helps your decision in picking them over the other programs that you looked into?

that come up here just quickly review the changes it's not really changes there's a new policy but she'll explain everyone so the previous restraint and seclusion policy I believe was from 2013 there have been a number of legislative updates since that time and and most importantly there was some legislation this summer that requires boards to adopt a policy that includes exclusionary time-out that is new to this policy so what that means is a temporary separation of a student from a classroom setting or environment some activity for the purposes of calming or deescalate so this policy includes exclusionary timeout there are a couple other important updates that just like to draw your attention to one is the fact that there is important legislation about school teams multidisciplinary teams meeting about a student if there are four restraints or seclusion or some combination within a 20-day period that's important to inform any kind of behavioral planning for the student and the case of a special education student would be furthermore there is information in here that is related to legislation about the training that needs to be provided by districts for staff members particularly the crisis intervention teams and that training includes a lot on the escalation but also safe methods for emergency situations and our requirements for reporting Ljuba the district and state do many questions about this policy can I just ask who's on a crisis intervention team is there one per building react each building maintains a crisis intervention scene this is a group of people the principals coordinate each team's they report who's on the team to me and I maintain those lists and these are people who have been trained and exactly what I said before the escalation safe methods for emergency intervention and the building's have generally their own procedures for calling when needed these scenes and how these games would respond when needed in an emergency situation they include teachers administrators mental health staff members paraprofessionals anyone who has been trained and identified how are they cold through really a fence on building procedures so in general this is a really general as a teacher would call for assistance or a staff member would called the office or assistance and the office would has a procedure for identifying those people and getting them to where they need to go so it is possible it is really building specific because it depends on the communication procedures thank you okay so this is up for a first read yes first rate thank you just for Changez or strength we found that hurt yeah okay all in favor aye all right so if there are any questions as usual you can get in the next week or so yes that would be great and because of the urgency this did we agree that we were going to yes that was that was the other thing so our next meeting is actually in 28 days so we would like to bring it again at that meeting for the final read so if we could I don't open you to motion to waive the 30-day period but we would need to do that policy that allows us to do that in rare occasions so we can look that up as we prepare for the January 16th meeting let's do that suspenders as our counsel says this protect us yeah yeah we can make the motion over this item right it doesn't need a medical policy or anything is just an assault mode okay I'd like to make a motion to board that the board approve a 28-day period instead of a normal 30 day period on policy number five one four four point one to accommodate the January schedule second discussion and why do you want the question five if you could buy the fourth all right all in favor aye okay now we have the non lapsing education fund recommend a motion that the board authorized the Board of Education chairman to represent to request the establishment of a non lapsing fund to the world of finance this one also falls under the Belton suspender policy that we have here and essentially as we've reported before that board ended up with an under map for the 2017 18 fiscal year approximately sixty five thousand dollars after we had the accrual for the supplement and okay would you like to explain exactly how we ended up with the under on and what in the mechanics of it sure because before the pretty cruel it was it was one of the larger ones we had primarily form of we were under budget in salaries for the making me had a lot more people retire than we anticipated okay and did it have to do as well with because we froze items for so long we did specialized textbooks library books from the freeze okay equipment okay and then and once we if I understood once we were able to take you know to go back to us spent some of those items it was so far into the school year that it didn't make sense to purchase the items or the conference's had already passed that we had frozen at the time we got to a point where we knew we had that mustn't undermine it was it was too late to do anything and we had we always try to go into the end of the year expecting a few negative surprises and we didn't get any of those this past year we got a few positives every year it said landing with a little cushion we waited with the much more cushion than I expected okay so sixty-five thousand is what percentage of our overall Russian it's like a tenth of a percent or so yeah yes I'm sure that's in context so what this request is for is we will put a request to the Board of Finance as we did last year but by the time the request went forward and the audit had closed and they were able to establish that I'm a certified so we want to get this started as quickly as we can in order to to make a Vincere any other discussion questions so you'll take it as a letter to the Board of Ed to the for finance or to their meeting in January or what will so no I will send it to the Board of Finance chair all right all in favor aye thank you that moves us into Oh business and policies correct my motion of the board approve the policies listed below for final reading as recommended by the policy subcommittee first reading was on the better 7 2008 I would list out the individual policies just in case people have issues so that okay Kate version number three two six zero sales and disposal of sleep books equipment and supplies Kate version number three two eight one school fundraisers Kate version number three four three five fraud prevention investigation Kate version number three two three two individuals with Disabilities Education Act fiscal compliance Kate version number three five one six point five sex offenders on school property Kate version number five one two two student assignment two classes second any questions or Rosa did you give any you know people I didn't I didn't know anything on these so yep just any questions here the way the policies are handed to us is great it's easy to understand that changes and it's communicate very well there are many discussions there questions good anything else I just like to thank policies subcommittee for all the work it's been a lot of free reading preparation as we matriculate through the 3000's and then of course have any other non three thousands that come up along the way the natural order of business so thank you it's a lot of work and to get this we get our budget series of all out to date there's a lot of policies thank you it's just I know it's a lot of work okay no discussion all in favor all right 2018 20 sweet calendar recommend a motion that the board approve that she thousand 19 2020 school calendar as recommended by superintendent dr.

Uh I think the coach definitely set it them aside because he's fantastic. I love his coaching style and what he likes to focus on. We just really connected. And then what were the other schools that you were seriously considering? Um, there was a couple around like in New York and Pennsylvania and all that, but I just think St. Michaels was the place for me. And then I mean, you know, the same question that they gave the guys. How does it feel to have all this done knowing that you know where you're going to go to school, you know, next year? It's relieving. I'm glad it's over with. Yeah. More or less same question for me, too. You know, what sort of what do you think your legacy will be, you know, leaving behind Dartmouth High School? Um, just hopefully that high school sports are fun and it's worth playing all four years and you build friendships that will last a lifetime.

Tom roof okay we had this presented to us at the last week just and I promised you all the table the spreadsheets for this meeting as well thank you we had discussed when we had to modify the 1819 school calendar and spring - how made for graduation and the and sodas that we wanted to take a look at the school calendar to see if we could streamline the little bits to have more days where the kids go to school five days a week instead of so many days off and and as a consequence and a little earlier so we're not having to look at the probability that we did last time that the snow is and the macro burst so what I did is took a look at all of the surrounding districts both the Derby and some of the surrounding districts just take a look and see what they are doing in comparison not to say that we have to emulate that but this is what all the districts are doing with the table a couple of things to notice the first day I've noted both when the students have their first day in the staff this by the way is the 2018-19 school cuz the 1920 is not available for all of the dinners I think like us everyone is in the process of just finalizing them the staffs first day when it's different from the students first aid those are obviously professional days that the staff has prior to the students first day of classes the difference the dates noted in blue are those that those districts are in session and we are not the days noted in orange are the days that we have we are in session and the only districts are not but as you can see um we go to school a lot of days amid sir we have off a lot of days that other districts are in session in this school and as a consequence they tend to end up to a week before us some of them do as we instituted last year and fiddled in the exercise we have three snow days built into our session this time some of them build it up to five so if they're not used then there is that so clarify me on that one so for example on the calendar I brought forward two weeks ago with building in three snow days it shows your 19th is the last day of school should we have no snow days no emergencies at all we've actually had on 16th just for perspective when you're thinking about things that did you and that brings the 182 soon this do the other districts generally have the same amount of PD days yes yes most of them have five PD days many of the schools have an extra key day PD day prior to the start of the school year so they have that third which is where they give it as well as you see most most districts do go to school on Columbus Day yeah and do it like we have our Veterans Day where there is some sort of acknowledgement Wow while the school is in session versus having the day off the ones that see you in the lava if you look at New Milford the 14th of March I believe was just a teeny day in the middle there they must have been able to schedule something so that's why it's not nearly down below this normally ordinary days Saturday um this was last year so some start because yeah they don't have all of them in session right now but it's just this comparison because most of the Columbus Day that the Wednesday prior to the exclaiming they're all gonna be the same and I have a concern with December 20th because we have a lot of disruptions every month and typically before each break the students are either dismissed early or have a day off which is very you know it's quite a concern for parents especially working parents that they take off for certain days I don't see it as a necessity we're really trying to value instructional time you said five plc days that's been that was reduced those two years ago over this this past year down to four plc do sort of like that December 20th date on your current calendar proposal seven for vacation for weather the long holiday break and early dismissal there was no instructional or professional development reason for that yeah you brought that up Rosa because Christmas 23rd on a Monday if it was on that 1/3 I know traditionally if it was on a Friday or something then you have it early dismissal but since it since that really dismissal meatballs on Friday don't see why we need to they just be a full day angry so what does everyone's appetite for Gigi anything else in the store sugar calendar I had a question about early dismissal Davis for PLC and whether early dismissal I always get confused some of these on which days they have lunch in which days they don't have much early dismissal and I'm not looking for an answer for that year but but I was talking to somebody from another districts confusion who said no matter what the reason for dismissal whenever there's an early dismissal they still serve lunch for the kids who have careers it's something for us that we should start liking about that all the kids may not go home and have lunch it would also it would reduce confusion as well right hmm typically an early dismissal it doesn't go smoothly so the kids are arriving on later sometimes over an hour and early dismissal or a weather emergency early okay you're receiving on that and so you know that's for sure weather dismissal sign or talk because you just trying to it's that I registered on when I saw the first one was this second week in a second the beginning of the third week in October you know they're off on a Wednesday on a Thursday off on a Friday off on a Monday it just feels very disjointed to me and I do understand why one one of those is Columbus Day and one of them is yom kippur and then we stuck a PD day right in the middle of us yeah and part of the reason for the timing that just popped real quick the time just so everybody knows it's the timing of the PD is we have the they're in pink by the way we are the two in the late summer when teachers come back and then we want to build on each PD session so there's follow-up training that occurs or collaboration for example from late August to then mid October to early November and so there's just follow up there and we also track time the PLC days of cinema with either building on or around beginning middle or end of your assessment time so we that high-quality time where principals have their saps I just think you put parents and families at a big inconvenience if you off on Wednesday off on Friday disagree and we have to find a way to make it continuous or or I mean it's just it's too disjointed Sunday and I also don't think in that environment that we ought to be taking Columbus Day Off I mean not for nothing but you know you don't need a religious holiday followed by a holiday as well that you should hear most most districts don't fall right that's soon after so I just me it's just it's feels very awkward that was the one thing my calendar that jumped out at me and the half-day on and in summer which I didn't think we needed okay yeah I would agree coldest day another nation we held soon session doctor of the Wednesday of Thanksgiving this year because we had snow day early yes how is their attendance on that day oh gosh we didn't actually I haven't asked the principal's for attendance on that day to run and the student and his son Harry had not run that week I could certainly do that I was thinking right I was just curious it was something we you know we wanted to continue having offer if attendance was good and most people around and we're getting people in if that was also a data yeah it's it's about half and half in our area in our direct where I'd say about half take the Wednesday off in half have it as an early dismissal on stirs regularly scheduled school that consistent with what you found yeah it's a 21st of last year right we're looking at the 27th an extra calendar yes I'm a common thing talking about Columbus sake I know that in our collective bargaining agreements Columbus States specifically lists it as a holiday so look at language and the contracts at school that day whether we can just give people a floating holiday or if we have to bargain over how to change the contract okay so maybe you want to check that before you make any this and that's not in all the contracts right can there's some others some do not get all these but I just yeah so so thinking out loud do you need is there an importance between having the else professional development day a month apart in October or November could you do it two days in a row there in October what's the suggestion on the two days in Rome on November 5th the 5th is election that about elections so that's the one the house I'll stay so if we were going to move we made with yet we moved the 11th the October 11th could could be on the Monday for example you know that's something we can do yeah did we do that did we do that while you're here I thought we may have had two in a row here did you ever have but Monday off can to do them it was a breeze desert no no I was thinking October 11 it seems you're right because it's you're not going you're not gonna be often Wednesday on a Thursday often Friday yeah that makes sense well we could ask the administration to come back you know logic and also check what their contracts a lot of flexibility but I just thought that was too choppy that's all and I think it would drive your teachers to September less disruptions sometimes a tough month you know startup stuff and all that what's going on but I well I mean I'm hearing a couple things about if I may I'll just summarize so he sounds like there's an appetite for perhaps looking seriously at not having school off for Columbus Day so we'll review the contracts on that see if we were to if the board was to make a motion to as a day-off how we would address that in the contest how we have to go forward so we can that's a straightforward comeback also knocked over taking a look at the professional development day on the 11th and is there another place we can move that day to have some more continuity in our weeks but still get out of you know timing-wise what we need of the PD day moving on to November the 27th sounds like there might be some appetite to make to have that kind of the traditional religious missile rather than day off and then the 20th which is a Friday before I think everybody it sounds like there's no objection to the Monday the 23rd off which isn't a true holiday necessarily but school would be closed but on the 20th that Friday make that a full day rather than run really just in the meantime also taking a look to the point Debbie brought up about a little more consistency perhaps with an emergency early dismissals and planned early it's just as if it's possible there's something we do around lunch then those are all things we can come back on it then ask me interest rate or that would be great thank you and I just want everybody to know as well we'll come back I'll come back with a proposal on that we'll have some answers regarding the contracts the there has been I'd say probably over a half a dozen calls to totally send me about parents clamoring for the calendar what are you gonna do you know we need to plan a vacation what are you thinking when's the April break you know all those kind of things so it is definitely something we ate a lot that first meeting January we could it would be inconvenient for the for our stakeholders but if it takes till the second meeting January we want to do it right so we'll come back with us great thank you very much you got one sidebar if I could I've heard from a number of parents that on a really dismissal date whether it's a unplanned early dismissal or a scheduled religiousness all their biggest issue is not knowing what the bus is going to arrive so what they've been meilleur about is their buses at the end of the street so they sit in their car for a half an hour kind and they the bus and they all come up with the same suggestion which is there's going to be an app that tracks whether the buses are right and we ever explored that so can't actually we're coming up on the contracts opportunity times to talk with with all-star we have talks imagine that yes um while that is absolutely a technology as possible there may be a cost to that in terms of GPA there is one thing we do want to consider and this was the scary task force is we want to see how that plays with security and people knowing where these buses are all over the place so that's just something being happened understand it but that's got to be in the people who do the apps that got a thought through scenery things Chatsworth since and data and so the reason I'm sure there's some districts in Connecticut that happens so yes but I just you know I kind of keep going back with all about the students and the families if I we got people to send out there at the ends of streets and parse and cool on their jets right it's we're not consciously from John not just sitting there is a cost to it and they had upgraded their technology and he said we're coming up on our opportunity to meet her we negotiated a contract with them or what today I'm guessing if dambreuse knowing that they would know what the cost would be what did they record I mean did he gave a ballpark that's gonna cost so you don't know if it's negligible or significant right okay Theresa no sorry yes we're talking about the capital budget it's simple it's this wonderful Center okay so this little calendar we are going to table until week next week I think you need to so it's still alright so next we have the UH new school building project that is just an update project since our last board meeting we went in front of the Planning Commission for and it's a necessary step in the process as well and did receive unanimous favorable vote on the Planning Commission as well everyone is very much in favor of that I sent out the spreadsheet to everyone see if we can't get people who have contracts for each other contracts um January phobia or I danced heard of feeling really really cool which is a good thing which means a lot of people are eager to hear about it and we can do the presentations Debbie's often also offered to share some of the groups that they reached out to the library as well so have more groups that we can reach out to in that way we have the board's there are four sets of the board's ones currently displayed it's how all one is currently at the library we will be taking one with us to the presentation and the other one we're calling our rowing boards kind of like the concert they would be there for the concert maybe it'll spend a little time at parking wrecks and a little time at the historic museum you know just just kind of roll all over the place trying to reach as many people discussions questions I'd like to say thanks to Eric for helping us come up with a new streamlined web address you can find information easily ok if there's nothing else here we can go on to review the projects there are some people that put in questions those were responded to to our board members was there anyone else that had questions at this point [Music] and I'd like to thank dr.

Birol and mr. folks for their quick responses yes very some detailed questions and they were very thorough responses be very welcome and I'm sure that I'm sure there will be I do have to thank the team principals HRR missus various doctors holiday they were great in Eric as well in helping responses I was really so the St Mac was discussed I'm assuming that he last night just less okay and then will we be hearing about that at the next war because we'll be able to make a group informed decision on this [Music] and other questions this week how do we want to do this I mean usually we give it one more meeting to digest over the holidays kind of reviewers come back in January and really start to their meeting discussion mile of every single regulation if everyone's ready we can do that now if everyone would like to again do some holiday reading and their budget again we can start that when everyone's here as well we would hopefully you know be seeing the full board at that time as well I think that's probably a marker just to have them included yes okay so we have in the next board meeting which is what is that second so basically I thought the next or me topically on the agenda we won't have on that agenda okay he also program studies information is organized and public will probably not have that capital thing we talked about pulled together by that oh that'd be the meeting after both the other night series because many people are going obligation no I understand that smart awkward timing we like them all even have it ready to go I would hope we would like to have it ready to go I mean we're gonna get the college try I'm thinking the more we can get the top up all things first meeting better off won't be a sunset to be and secondly and I think we can start this some discussion that we know sauce me yeah I would I would like to stop the or just try to avoid some of the special meetings that we had to do to you know pull it to come together as much as we can so if we can really start having some good detailed discussion at the next meeting I think that would be very helpful and then just finish another such as again and I think it's to the point you may can collect while we could always find fine time for special meeting if we needed of course with such an important decision the dance starts getting full with new school project presentations that's what's starting to happen so so those those opportunities will lessen and we still have to get the budget by the last day of January ordered mr.

das office saw that okay all right if there is no other discussion for the budget frequents last meeting of this heart can fight you know they have fun it's not a lot to say about yeah but we could say we received it and we asked for a very really the first year next year capital projects and absolutely people one word about yeah the option a option being kind of behind that would be helpful and I say we just need to be we're continuing because we really don't even talk about this irregular on our three points but it's such an important part of what we do that we're continuing the revision work on our policy serious policies I mean ever represents a lot of hard work and is a key key task that we as a board have you know I'm thinking to that idea Rosa you know I don't know that as maybe we've articulate in writing for the public you know the effort and you know we're using the Cape model that might be something yeah we can even just say at that point that we've already done the revisions on this series that we've done this is what we're doing and we're working towards these six new ones and we received another couple right along the agenda but but even the work we've done pass them to this point we've done a two thousand euros so that's we do a little summary all right upcoming events not a whole lot but for all the schools there's going to be an early dismissal this Friday December 21st and all schools are closed from Monday December 24th through Tuesday January 1st school resumed on Wednesday January 2nd that's it I had the pleasure of going to the weekend also last night I was so impressed with the talent of the kids performing in both of those concerts really was I didn't even have a child performing last night and I went and thoroughly enjoyed it but it just I think it really speaks volumes about the dedication and the commitment of our music teachers and I just wanted to give a big shout out to all of them it was so apparent how much work goes into bringing music education to our kids and how much the kids get out of it then I really think I couldn't let the evening go by thank you yes that objection he's a jerk thank you everybody we're gonna ignore this season [Music]

[Music] [Applause] [Music] good evening this is Wednesday January 2nd Happy New Year everybody I would like to call the regular meeting of the Brookfield Board of Education to order if we could all rise for the Pledge of Allegiance pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands one nation under God indivisible with liberty and justice for all okay we have our full board in attendance this evening and so the first thing on the agenda is public comment we do have two people signed up first is a chris d'elia excuse me one minute Chris now can you hear me now okay my name is Chris D'Elia I live at 16 Val Road and the reason I'm here today is because we have a we have a problem in the school system and that is with once again we have money going missing from the schools you know I'm here speaking probably by myself today but be rest assured that within the community there is there is a growing distrust of the school with management of our money and if any of you have been talking to your neighbors you'll know that that's true I don't know what we're going to do I don't know what we're gonna do about it would its hidden from the community time and time again another thirteen thousand dollars almost missing this is there's other issues going on like that within the school you could talk to any parent and they'll tell you stories of donated money missing and there's no oversight and there's nothing there's nothing from the Board of Education everybody on this board knows that your job is to represent the people and represent this town and to let us know what's going on and I can't believe that the board would know about this going on and not send out something to the parents after the investigation was over after search warrants were done and and keep us informed you know we're tired of being bled to death in this town we have to pay for our kids to park their cars have to pay for our kids to watch our kids play sports we have to send our kids out to raise hundreds of dollars just to play a sport in this town only to find out that the money had gone missing this is worse than what happened with art all right this woman stole money from from the kids in the school from the parents in the school and I know you guys are not going to respond I know you thought not to respond to the public but I'm just telling you if if you want more money to be raised for these schools and you want your your school increases with with taxes and all I sincerely hope that you guys get a handle on what's going on because this is this is pitiful so I have to say thank you Chris we generally don't respond and I don't want to get into a back-and-forth but I just will say this was not money disappearing from the Board of Education this was purely a PTO issue which is a separate 501 C 3 independent of the Board of Education with its own treasures its own accounting this was not money missing from the Board of Ed we are not losing money so we just need to state that right here perhaps you should also address these concerns with the PTO that they have done very well trying to address that with a few people I'm just saying there's there's other areas that you think you could address I appreciate that you know it wasn't taken out of my left hand pocket was taken out of my right hand thank you yes so Chris just let me just add and you can go said if you'd like the it's important to remember that the administration and the Board of Education don't provide oversight to that organization had we we haven't we've actually been instituting a lot of accounting controls and a lot of oversight reviews we do not involve ourselves in any way in the financial management of that organization so that said you mentioned there are other items if you're aware of other items come talk to me afterwards I'd like to understand more specifically you're here but I'd be HAP more than happy to discuss with you my issue is that we need more oversight we need an open checkbook system we need to know where the money is going this is but I've lived in this town for 15 years and for 15 years we've been asking where the money's going for 15 years we've had different people come in to the border bed or in the town and we're asking where is the money going and all we keep finding out is that the money is going into somebody else's pocket whether it's from the PTO this time what school the last time I'm just saying we need I understand your point but you cannot go combing hole to different organizations that actually are not operationally connected and saved because they happen to have something that were related to the school and in assuming that the one organization is going to be providing oversight to the other organization it just doesn't happen that way well I mean I understand the I don't that does make me feel any better that like I said that there's someone else I would suggest you go talk to the PTO yeah thank you and Chris just to to clarify because you have you referred to the entire Board of Ed I found out when the public found out I had no idea this was going on I did not know it was going on it's not a board matter and there's difference of opinions but personally I found out when the public found out I was aware of the concern that the PTO had raised but I was turned over to the police and the police were handling it I knew nothing other than that and I'm not alone in that there the the PTO had spoken as I understand to various people thank you next we have rich Saluda rich so Lucca 32 great hair and lean um I guess I just want to say to Chris you're not the only one who's upset and coming here to talk about this I was disappointed to see that it wasn't even part of the agenda perhaps it might be part of the superintendent's update since he was quoted in a newspaper and I fully understand the difference between the PTO and the Board of Ed but like the previous Speaker I was involved four years ago with asking questions of the Board of Ed regarding questionable expenses and not only were we dismissed myself and several other residents who are raising those questions one of the board members actually mocked a group of the residents who were raising those questions refer to them as Rooney's gang Rooney being Glenn Mooney who's now on the board of Finance the board of education did nothing about it and yet when mr.

Collier was finally arrested everybody was shocked how could this happen and this is what I'm reading now about the PTO everybody's shocked how could this happen and the reason I'm raising the issue is the question is why aren't people asking questions how does somebody do this for two years just like the finance finance director of the Board of Ed who got arrested did it for several years it's because nobody asks questions everybody just accepts what somebody tells you and nobody looks at anything there will be checks a check the Finance Manager was the only one writing checks could write his own he could write a check to himself nobody would over you know as the previous speaker mentioned who's overseeing this so the question I would have I mean yes you guys are separate from the PTO but the PTO meets in the schools and you're responsible for the schools so this is an organization and again I'm not saying that you have to check everything they do but to just hide your put your head in the sand and say well it's not us you know let's make that clear yeah but the PTO is part of the Brookfield school and where is that where is the rest of the Brookfield PTL how come they didn't know about it just a treasurer is is that person the only person who deals with money and expenditures nobody oversees that you know and I agree with the previous speaker this is outrageous and as a taxpayer you start thinking eh what's going on here in Brookfield you know I would have thought people would have learned after the previous situation I thought people would have had a little more of a conscience and maybe a little bit more perspective on looking at things but apparently that hasn't happened because here we are four years later and we have a similar situation with PTO so thank you rich I will once again underline and emphasize that the PTO is not part of the school finances they're completely separate and different it's its own 501 C 3 non-profit group okay that is all we have that are signed up is there anyone else here that would like to speak okay moving on we have student representative hi everyone hope you all had a great holiday in new year all the students at BHS are adjusting after the long break and still trying to get back into the swing of things at school most of our clubs are focusing on coming up with new ideas for fundraisers and ways to get the students involved with the town also our winter sports teams are in full swing and performing extremely well and students are also beginning to prepare for their midterm exams which will be happening in the next two weeks thank you thank you very okay written correspondence okay there's one written correspondence from Marie Williams regarding the new school project thank you approval of forty minutes recommend a motion that the board approve the minutes listed below as recommended the regular meeting on December 19 2000 18 second any questions or discussion soon okay all in favor all right all right brings us to the superintendent's update dr.
