now one thing and the security side some things that we are trying to incorporate into this our dual Factor authentication so we can have more secure access to our Network and detection response so that's also included in this network infrastructure article we have a vehicle request so you don't know much about this yet I don't think unless you've heard rumors but we are in our budget proposal you'll learn that we are prepared to move forward a proposal for an 18 to 22 program here at the high school for students with special needs we I in an ideal setting we would have a vehicle to be able to transport students to volunteer opportunities work sites other activities in the community and this would hopefully uh get funding and we could we could utilize that that's fifty eight thousand dollars technology Hardware or Hardware request uh two hundred thousand dollars this is our traditional Town doesn't ask us any questions about this and gives it to us hopefully um 200 000 basically continuing to uh to support Hardware replacement throughout the district bathroom renovations several schools require work in the bathrooms one major project that we need to complete is to provide an ADA accessible bathroom at the Quinn school it would be in the nurse's office we've identified a location right now we can do it but we need the funding to be able to complete that all right we fire system upgrade so this has been on the plan for a while and I kept like moving it inching it down every year because there was a lot to manage and it is going to be a lot um so we've been working with the fire departments to um discussing what we should be doing and with the buildings with our fire systems they definitely need to be replaced this would probably only do one building um it might do some planning for the next building but basically it would be planning and then construction we've asked for 250 000 and we have to do this we can't do this all at once in all our buildings so you'll see in the plan that there are additional requests down the road in the next uh the following four years what would be your first priority we are going to work with the consultant to be sure that we can accomplish we have several buildings that we that we need to address so we want to make sure one of them is not this one already uh it's it's on the list it's on the list unfortunately remember that you know this building was built with you know it's was low bid it was you know there are a lot of things in this building that are going to need to be replaced and it is 21 years old so keep hearing that yeah yeah yeah unless we had if I can't but this if you remember we had to spend a lot of money with legal fees because of all the other that's right went on too and that came out of the bond for the school yeah came out of our pool I heard that we were supposed to get swimming pool yep yep um another item that I know that uh you know we've discussed before is the high school track reconstruction so the track out there isn't in great shape it's been deteriorating we get broken pieces that we've been trying to fix but it's not going to stop and we do need to take a look at that and attempt to um replace it for the providers with a long-term solution so we did receive an estimate and we so we've requested 540 thousand dollars to to accomplish that energy efficient lighting so we have quite a few projects that we have on our radar that could save us some money there's not a lot of unfortunately not a lot of utility rebates for lighting anymore those have kind of gone away for the most part but we would take advantage of whatever we can find working also with the town with green communities money if we can although most of that is going to be directed towards heating and HVAC related repairs so we've asked for a hundred and twenty thousand dollars to continue to work on projects like that Stadium Renovations so um we bid out the stadium I think I I think I presented that to the committee or at least gave information at one point earlier this year it was um you know six and a half million dollar price tag and we have about a million and a half so I included it in as as a five million dollar estimate for your consideration I didn't want it to go without thinking about it um it should be done the bathrooms have not gotten any less embarrassing um they're you know it's it's it's in rough shape still needs to be done great Mr chair that so I've had a conversation with Mr Crowley as well as we had a meeting uh with the turf field committee with um I think it was Dave and Stan from the select board who's on the turf field committee and Sean um and I'm not sure if there if there's anyone else there but essentially I guess from my perspective and from the perspective of the turf field committee you know what are I'd love to hear and I'm sure Mr colliewood to the thoughts of this committee as to you know what are we going to do because as we remember the the second round of town meeting fund and had came had come in they they voted to approve it I think that second round was two something three something three something and then the cost estimates for the new um maintenance not maintenance but storage facility came in higher than higher than what we thought so that leaves us right now in our that article that leaves us with how much about a million and a half so right now on file we have about a million and a half left to spend on The Stadium from town meeting unfortunately the last bit came in at six million dollars um all we have to show for the stadium right now is we have a beautiful turf field great lighting um and we we have a nice we're going to have a nice storage facility to put everything in but what that leaves us with are stands that certainly need to be repaired bathrooms that are um not adequate in the least as well as ADA Compliant we have a Press Box a ticket booth we have the whole front if you remember years ago it's been years ago now that the whole front was part of that design of redoing the brick wall putting nice fencing up a new entrance ticket booth there and essentially the bulk of this money is for these stands to renovate the concrete they determine the engine is determined that the concrete was sound or the engineers determined that the end the concrete was sound but certainly needed to be resurfaced and and renovated so we have a great feel while we have a great field you know I don't know I I don't have an answer when we're getting bids for six million dollars and we're concerned about us are going away and funds and I I don't know I I don't I don't have an answer so I'd love to hear yeah from anyone that wants to or maybe revisit this next week Shannon so I mean I guess my question is you know I get it's you know the concrete and it's nice and all that but do we need all that right can you go with just a I'm going to use maybe air quotes around simple because nothing simple or inexpensive in Public Instruction but um is there a way to scale back the design um to create perfectly usable stands like the stands in my high school were just metal that's it there's no concrete just metal and uh you know a box up at the top and that's it um you know maybe we do you know something a little bit more you know we do need bathrooms Ada bathrooms but um can we scale back the design to get us to a more manageable place because I do feel like six million dollars is a lot right um is there a way I mean we do need to improve that but I don't wonder if there's a more economical sort of design that might help us cut that down some Jim I can just say so we we did have the designer take a look at aluminum stands the part of it's it becomes quite complex in that when we take down the existing structures we then have a responsibility to be fully compliant with all regulations that requires a significant structure to house bathrooms that we would be putting inside the stands you know under if if we if we renovate we have to make an effort to become to become as compliant as possible certainly we'd have a full Ada access but we wouldn't have the number of fixtures or the size bathrooms that will be required with this separate building that we'll have to build when we put aluminum stands the the neighboring community not neighboring but another community in Southeastern Mass put aluminum stands home and away with bit with support buildings um and it was five million dollars so I I don't think that that is going to be the answer to our problem it's a million and a half dollars it is it is it might be something that we could consider but um it's yeah it's not necessarily going to get us there all set Shannon at the moment Kathleen what I would love to see for us and I was on the disability commission and part of you know approving some funding to help with those side stands but what I would love to see at a minimum short bathrooms and I appreciate Mr Kylie our family have you know have any time I've reached out and and I know the community is frustrated as well but um you have done what you can do to make sure that um yes embarrassing yes in need of a lot of work but what I would love to see us do is be a little bit more thoughtful and even if it's just shifting over our accessible seating to be part of the larger Community there's nothing more ah to come in and say there's there are there's our stands and there are friends with our community members in wheelchairs and over there in the corner blocked by the pole and with no access to true you know my family's not complaining really I'm here complaining but um yeah I understand and I know and I know the history of it but I would love at a minimum for at least us to be a little bit more thoughtful around you know Equity being more Equitable and just inclusive and one Dartmouth uh with the seating for for games two cents we certainly are in the new design for sure and and that's where we want to be I know that you know we bid this out at the worst possible time yeah but we needed to know so and we have the design done and we had waited long enough um so we bit it out and you know I don't know what the future holds in terms of construction prices whether there's any chance that it would be less in the future that's not normal in construction but this is not a normal situation so it's possible very well you know and again I'll just uh just from like talking with a friend of mine whose father also you know is had some difficulty navigating I think the uneven pavement was is there a challenge and so like you even thought like more than some of the other things so I don't know if there's like again this I guess picks back to Shannon's point to like are there some temporary fixes that we can do for those immediate and dramatic and decathlings like whether it's moving the stands you know and and dealing with those like I don't know if they're like heave points I mean I am like the last person to be talking about building construction but you know it does you know it seems like there's tripping hazards which you know and again I know with someone who has elderly parents one little fall is you know devastating so so again those I think and you know not to say like slapping a coat of paint on the bathrooms is going to make them better but it'll make them a little bit better for like until you know for um you know a year or so again it's not the best it doesn't deal with the Ada but I wonder if there's a way that we can again at least smooth out some of those like rougher patches so it's it's safer for folks who are you know elderly and walking or you know who have uh you know disabilities or you know just uh be more accommodating Chris so I'm just talking off the cuff here with the money that we have is it possible or feasible you know to chunk this out a little bit more and is it possible to work on the inside of the stands without touching the the actual stands exteriorly the the bleachers the aluminum bleachers that sit on top of the concrete is it possible to go in there at least God the bathrooms got the bathrooms make them ADA Compliant you know and then whether or not we can do something with a concession stand as a starting point but at least the is it possible to go in there and at least work on the bathrooms without me without messing around the exterior I'm just so though that's true the concrete repairs um that need to be made need to be made on the interior and exterior of the stance you're asking if it's possible it might be um just the interior we would have to leave it without like we can't cover up the inside of the stands in order to do the repairs that are ultimately going to have to be done to maintain those stance so whether you could leave everything exposed and still have new bathroom fixtures I don't know just thinking outside I could grow out there to the designers and ask you know what that would entail for sure Kathleen um so if we were to carve out uh you know if we were to just focus in on like a pathway a More Level pathway around um just going to the Middle School graduation and having to utilize the bathroom on our visitor's side could we do something now that we've got that space the storage space could we do something with that that room that is a bath that has a bathroom and and and make that our Universal ADA Compliant multi-gender you know just bathroom one person in or family bathroom type thing um in the mean is that is is has that been thought about there will be two bathrooms in that structure that will be fully ADA Compliant in the new design back to the so so the stands need to be repaired I I will ask but I'm pretty sure that they're going to say repair The Stance before you renovate the bathrooms it makes sense construction wise something drops down yeah I mean they need to basically the plan to do construction was to rip out everything inside of those structures so nothing left and then do all the repairs and then begin to rebuild and that's the way it makes the most sense construction wise but it's also a lot of money and we don't have it so I'll ask I'll ask about it Shannon so I'm in favor of asking town the capital planning committee and town meeting I mean we know we have to do it right and here we're like well could we includes this could we includes that can we spend a bunch of money without really fixing it let's ask first I mean we know we need to do it let's ask it's not it's not something that's frivolous we need it and it's not just the school department I say no then we'll have to think about you know them we'll have to think about other things but let's ask first um and and maybe we could see you know are there ways that we can cut some costs it it would be a big difference right we've got 5 million here we already have 1.5 asking for 3.5 versus 5. that's a big difference um so if there are ways that we can cut that ask I think we should ask there's not I mean we need to ask no yeah um and then let's just see figure out what to do afterwards if they say no go ahead I have one more item on my list yeah no I should have moved that one to the end okay I didn't uh I didn't mean to uh diss music here but uh the the music equipment article um The Proposal is for 65 000.

so it's been about five years since we've had a music equipment article on the capital Improvement plan um what um I mean a lot of our equipment um is in need of of replacement um we get a lot of use out of it as you would imagine here um we have been able to replace some targeted equipment with the operating budget through the years but we want to be able to make sure that we can sustain our programs long term they do an awesome job at repairing um and maintaining the equipment so it's for no fault of that it's just use and age of the equipment so that's sixty five thousand dollars would really like to see that um you know moved forward too hopefully the town meeting at some point so those are the items that we really felt were important to add to the list this year and attempt to accomplish and you know I know we can we can talk about it more at the next meeting but you know I'd appreciate your consideration it will be a little different that the town process this year I this is a little late for us to do this but they're not anywhere in their process either so I'm not sure what that's going to entail I don't to my knowledge they haven't begun that so they're just talking about the budget tonight at that meeting so right so so you know we'll go and we'll Advocate with the capital Improvement planning committee for whatever you folks decide to approve so um we're ready to ready to do that any other questions I just have one more thought I I know these uh requests you know are in uh considered through you know thoughtfully in each building and District as a whole um I just have one thought relative to the bathroom renovation at Quinn you mentioned that a space had been found and located in uh um in the nurse's office and I I just I kind of cringe when I hear that because um because and I I would uh you know 25 years ago students who had Medical Technology feeding tubes they were fed because it was a medical device in the nurse's office we all know that's inappropriate that student deserves to eat with their peers similarly I would hate for a child or or a staff or a Community member who might not have access if the nurse's office locked during some kind of parent night um to and and many students who you know I'm generally speaking I I think it's more likely that a student that's that is in a medical needing an ADA Compliant might have some medical complex needs some health health you know immunity issues and it just wonder if there would be a second space Maybe in the hallway that might be available for consideration so not to expose a student to extra germs if they don't have to just use the bathroom I don't know that's just my two cents on that we did give some thought to this and and the space that we identified working with Mr granfield it is in the nurse's office currently it's only accessed from the nurse's office right now um it is a resting space and a bathroom the resting space component of that would have to go away because we need the space in order to make um you know to make the accessible bathroom it is on the corridor um wall so it is possible and we've we had some discussion about whether we would be able to make the primary access to that space through the um through the corridor there um there's some structural stuff we're gonna figure out about that um as to whether or not we can actually pull that off but it is right there on that Corridor so the main Corridor when you come in the door you take a right yeah it's down there great right past the nurse's office essentially so thank you anybody else okay so this is coming back to us uh at our next meeting to have some more discussion on adjustments and discussions so thank you for all of that everyone okay uh update on related Services sure thank you so we did Supply as well Miss Townsend going to be here tonight she's in school and that but she did draft this document for you all I know Mr Olive had asked last time about an update on what's going on with the related services so I think the important sheet that lists of all of everyone the two years kind of just gives a snapshot of how sometimes the positions change as well within the different departments sometimes we might have like one year was a number of slpas but then we switched to full slps Etc so you can take a peek get that um I think the important one of the important documents is the one that shows how the Departments have increased in numbers since 2014 basically and normally Beth and Laurie Jones would meet with these groups obviously all the time and I haven't met with them a number of times myself throughout the years just when they have needs increasing Etc et cetera and then we try to make adjustments we either as you know we went trying to add slpas at one time to give that extra support Etc so for example the speech language department is up to you know eight full slps but plus one slpa for this year which was a model that actually the SLP Department recommended to us last year when we met with them so we did as you know we wanted to give you what's been happening most recently for example the PT we've had one full-time PT um and again keeping track of the needs that are happening the case loads in the service hours that are required we did find the need we had to add up a 0.2 which we've posted for which may be difficult to get but that's one of the things that's a contract so very often we post for these very difficult to fill positions can't get people and then have to contract out um fortunately we're usually able to find someone but it's been very very difficult sometimes um we we provided the specialized programs number of students as you know like the pals pass K5 we have five programs over there and then the high school and middle school um I don't know if there's anything else basically that you wanted to know but you can see I think that the district makes very good attempt to try to increase the department as much as possible whether it is through a contracted service to add those additional support or to put in place uh someone full time of note of course you heard the bcba speak tonight that's a relatively new phenomena as you know we went from zero and we've got six rbts rbts in the district now and um they're they're all work under the bcba who supervises them so I don't know if there's anything more specific as I said Miss Townsend couldn't be here tonight but if you had more questions you can and I don't know the answer it can certainly pass that on foreign sorry yeah I had the opportunity that's all right Chris I had the opportunity to speak with Miss Townsend and I appreciate her getting this uh out to us I especially appreciate the FTE equivalents um from 2014 to uh 2023.

um I I guess in regards to the case loads I would just be curious as to I know um the bcba spoke about her case loads um we see the caseloads here but what are what are considered and maybe you could answer this for me or Dr Gifford um what are considered average or standard case loads for these service providers are are they is it over what is the recommended caseload or are we this average I guess that would be my only question I would have to ask that I honestly don't know the answer what I will say though is um don't forget that caseloads might be a very various times that the kids are being serviced so some students might have everyday ABA for example one might have one day or two so so that really plays into that idea too yeah not necessarily real I don't uh sort of like I jotted down some some notes when when the folks were speaking and I'm in and it's I mean it's tied to this but and you probably won't have an answer right now or and I'm just thinking to myself like I'm just wondering because historically Dartmouth I believe like other other districts as well like weren't necessarily um providing on a regular basis like ABI Services right um I think we ABA like and there was like questions around the I mean it's data driven it's I I you know my son is benefits greatly from the services in in its and but we previously I don't feel like we used some of the some of the um ABA like sort of Behavioral supports um previous to that and I would love to to hear and again it's it's it's related in a way but I would love to hear and although it's a bad time because I'm sure like covid and the increase of student needs and that sort of thing just what we're seeing I say covid but you know families not you know having access to comprehensive early intervention since you know during and since the pandemic all of those contributing factors to student needs I'm sure you just wonder though um the benefit that we're seeing in terms of students and then I think of like RTI and the students you know I wonder if I'm just curious I would love to hear it was recommended some tying up the RTI you know the the um the entry and the the discharge of and I just wonder how the the BCA supports and the rbts and and supporting student needs and how that all plays into how long a student is or which what percentage of those students are are put into special education more directly um because I'm also thinking of those parents that just don't understand that their child is delayed or presenting a certain way because of the lack of socialization during the last three years of covid and you know they don't realize that there they just haven't because I I recognize that families young families aren't necessarily reaching out to the degree that they would have previously in my professional life because they just aren't necessarily aware that their child is delayed or has has special education needs or I don't want to say issues but just just needs related to how they function I I would just be curious um now that we have the bcba and again it's not I'm just sorry yeah and as you know we have the child fine but the right yeah and right fed early intervention certainly students may not have been even there because of covet right or parents that don't recognize and so the school's like putting in the RTI interventions to see these things out and perhaps the family hasn't said hey I I'm noticing this at home you know like I would have but yeah but we do have I think our good um you know our assessment system that we have set up which will be starting to get information out about Pre-K and kindergarten that is really really good and I think we do are able to detect and help parents understand what's going on with their their kids through that so um that's certainly Our Hope but I you know I'm grateful to get the the data yeah it's important to know um I think it provides some clarity sometimes through some of the noise that the white noise and what actually is happening in the Departments so again if you have anything else you can certainly forward and touch base with Beth and find out more and I'll set Shannon thank you sound like Marilyn Monroe or something I know all right okay okay next pupils support service administrator and pending vacancy doc yeah we just we wanted to um knowledge the fact that this position aside from mine is also a very difficult position to fail possibly even more difficult we do know a number of districts are already out on the hunt I spoke to a colleague who had a search going on had an interview process and actually they're going back out again because the pool is small so we're just trying to support you on getting this posted because we never know what might happen again trying to get out ahead of it so I I wanted to ask Mr news to put it on the um we are ready to post we have a job description I don't know if we sent the job description forward but it's basically like we've done before for this position and if you would like us to we would post it and then you can all determine how you will go about the process once you know the app stop coming in but we were just trying to encourage that posting to get going yeah sure definitely um I yeah I I would love to see us move forward with this I do think it's important that that we have a thorough to your point um I see that in my world and and I also see some really frustrating things happening in other communities and and this is a very important position so I would love to see us get going on um and do like a full search and uh I've already indicated my interest but again it doesn't have you know I I feel I'd add value to the committee but also another fan a parent um you know back up my mind I had you in the back of my mind believe me so yeah I would love to see us move forward with I don't know if it's looking through the pat you know what's already kind of ready to go or um but this is I'm nervous about this one yeah nervous about both right all um but I would look forward to us kind of moving full force with a full search Chris yeah I'm 100 agreement that let's get this posted sooner rather than later um I'm okay with the with the makeup with the committee and my only recommendation would be I would like to see uh another teacher we have one two three four four administrators um it would be nice to see another whether it's special at a regular Ed I'd like to see another for what it's worth that's only um my opinion but I like to see another teacher as part of that and yeah no let's get this posted and you know I'm I'm sure that we potentially have some in-house candidates as well as um you know open it up to everyone in the field and let's see what we get and um you know at least this way you know we get to hear feedback from all the different stakeholders Chris just to uh to yours this has 11 members right now and you know no I get it odd number nope nope nope you know you you talk about adding one maybe if we added in I don't know we had two only so we have an odd number I don't know that type of Deal or some other massage just some other way to to you know another teacher and someone else that type of deal again keeping an odd number God forbid type of deal so that's that's just my thought as as you said that that's just my opinion I don't know like I mean I'm good either way Kathleen I just though too wanted to say like we've got the two school committee members my term ends so I don't know if we're up against what we were with the superintendent um in terms of my participation on it um and the timeline would it we want to have somebody probably run almost run parallel I'm pretty parallel pretty much going to run parallel so we'll be good okay attack Dr Jenkins so yeah I was I was just gonna say well maybe if we wanted to make it odd we could move down to one school Committee Member in part because we're running two searches at the same time and it's a lot but then if Kathleen's gonna be one of the two I do think we should have someone else just to ensure continuity so scratch that thought yeah that's so if you'd like we could get it posted we can uh do you go ahead I'm good do you want us to put out kind of the field to the TPS and say anyone that's interested and be on the committee to let us know and then you'll next meeting you can kind of discuss the committee more yep all right so then by that point hopefully we'll have some candidates coming in yeah can we also for for both of both the superintendent and the um the uh this position be sure to put that on social media um because not everyone watches these meetings and so really know about it you can also post it on the website yeah and I don't know if we want to do an email or you know a Mr galashaw can do his great Barry White voice I don't know um but just something to get the word out because um I think it's important to cast a broad net very good okay I know we've got a lot tonight yeah that's all well we knew that coming in uh use of school choice funds right so I won't yeah it's yeah it's it I had I have conversations with Mr perrotti where is Mr perrotti have him come on out he um I think I sent you the document so you've read through it we would like we're very much in support of this as you can see on his back of the he's been already looking at companies to give him the best deal ever where these cameras that he's looking for very professional cameras would be about 20 to 30 000 set up each he's feeling with a company that he's when we have to go to bed I already asked Mr Kylie buck anyway we would like to request that the school committee approve our use of up to twenty five thousand dollars to we thought at first we were just going to be purchasing one we may end up getting the whole kit and caboodle um foreign given the amount of work that this program has done for the district the town and all the work he's secured donor wise and Grant wise we felt that this would be a good use of some of the school choice funds so we were asking for that approval we thought up to 25 000 we could we could do that for him I'll make a motion to approve and then very we have moved on by uh Dr Jenkins the second uh by Miss White to approve up to twenty five thousand dollars of school choice funds for Mr perrotti to purchase what he needs for his media program any questions comments Chris I'll just say I uh you know I think it's going to a great cause and I have no reservations at all that it will be put this equipment will be put to good use yeah I'll also say I'm just very impressed with everything that our you know our media students and our teachers do they give our students real life skills and experience that is invaluable and so I think this is a you know a great investment yeah I I I will add that uh yeah to see the the passion um and and the leadership of Mr perotti and how he inspires his students and just so enthusiastically uh and doing so much and and all the projects I love watching all the Productions he's great yeah and I'll just also you know just to go and tag onto that that he really is like encouraging this sense of belonging that we're talking about in so many ways and and I think critically like doing these um this Outreach not just within the school Community but like into the community itself I mean he's you know I mean the amount of projects he's doing but you know including like the Dartmouth history project and you know reaching out into the community so it's just yeah so it's really uh you you know it's you know as we talk about again sense of belonging sense of belonging Community engagement like he's a linchpin for that so yeah yeah worth great investment yeah I mean if and if you look I mean also um what the students are doing with actual sporting events I mean they've been they've been doing the play-by-play and the color for sporting events type of deal uh Ben who we normally see here type of deal uh the Silver Lake game Tournament game type of deal in the net and he was up in a booth and with Jimmy Thompson and uh Paul Santos and he Ben was doing the play-by-play Jimmy was helping him along but Ben was doing a play-by-play and just had an a great time with a type of deal so it's awesome what us what these students are doing I mean and if you go in the back here you go downstairs and you see what they have for equipment it's you know you kind of think about when you watch The Today Show or an NFL game or something of that nature and they kind of very quickly show you the production room yeah it's a mini production room but we've got what they've got yeah it keeps getting better you know Kathleen I I was watching the dedication of the court from Mr Gaspar and I just was uh it was it was great Ben was correcting Paul Santos you know if he said somebody was six seven he said actually whatever it was it was funny he was he had his facts and he had he was ready and prepared for um that play-by-play it was great to see him so um uh you know confident enough to right to make the corrections on the spot to make sure that the what was being shared was was actually you know he's good on the Fly he really is so that's like all right so we have the motion and a second all in favor all right I suppose motion carries unanimously I don't know I don't know if I hear a whip [Laughter] I'm not seeing any fireworks coming out I'm a little disappointed I didn't hear the clapping okay uh next item the proposed school year 23 24 school calendar we all got a copy of that yep that's good oh like a person say always I appreciate the fact that we have the second off again I thought having January 2nd is always it really is nice to have I mean even if it isn't you know technically the national holiday because parents you know sometimes or kids recover parents get back if they're traveling so I think that's nice oh you can travel New Year's Day so um I just have a question about the the Wednesday before Thanksgiving um and just sort of looking at this and we have a half day but you know that that does make it pretty difficult for people who have to travel to go to their families and I don't wonder you know talking to my sister her District uses that the morning of the Wednesday before Thanksgiving as a parent-teacher conference morning so parents who have to go out of town can schedule their parent-teacher conference on the sixth like maybe we instead of doing the 13th we could do the 22nd and the sixth so they can do theirs not around Thanksgiving but people who have to who are in town can just do theirs in that morning it would give us the advantage of having a morning slot and an afternoon slot for parent-teacher conferences which might work better for some parent schedules I mean maybe some parents are unavailable in the afternoon but might be available in the morning I'm just sort of wondering whether we might consider that you know I have a family that's far away and when my kids were in school even a half day it basically meant that we couldn't travel for Thanksgiving sure um so I don't wonder whether we might play around with that half day and the Parent-Teacher conferences to give parents the option right if the you know to not we wouldn't be in school that day but maybe teachers would do a half day professional development or parent-teacher conferences I don't know just a thought yeah correct me if I'm wrong you've got to pick the half day up you're going to pick up the day yeah somewhere down the line so now you just yeah so but what I'm suggesting is we take the 6th or the 13th and make that not a half day we only do one half day in December it doesn't make it yes it does it would wash Mr Nunes if we did if we did the 22nd and the 16th as parent conference and professional development days and we did the 13th as a full day we would have the same number of school days we don't have to pick anything up yeah okay because we're not in school I'm not sure I'm again I'm going I'm going time on learning yeah as long as we have the half day the half day it's a full day okay really means full day no I I got to I got the half I got the half day counts as a full day don't get me wrong I've got that but if we're not having students in the building on the 22nd which is the day before Thanksgiving is it going to count as a school day it's almost like no it won't no it wouldn't count if you're not going to have students in the building right so what I'm then saying we have to make up a half day we still need to pick up a half day so now you're making you're gonna make for discussion purposes everybody would have to go to June 14th June 13th would be a full day June 14th would be a half day am I correct I think you're I think you're correct mom but I'm going to throw another Cog in the wheel here because my recommendation I'd like to see I see more and more school districts in the area considering it or doing it is that we eliminate School completely on the day before Thanksgiving on the 22nd and it's a day off for both staff and students first for travel um that that's my and yes we extend the school year um but but I think that it there's nothing let's face it yeah I mean there's nothing going on that day oh I mean and I got that we have the Howard Smith breakfast and then we have the you know the route you know and things of that nature and I got that but I don't know that's just that's just my thought I got you all right so that's another consideration but I also I I my understanding of Shannon's idea was that then in December instead of those two weeks where we have the sixth and the 13th as a half day yeah we eliminate one of them it's a half day counts as a full day the half day counts as a full day it counts as a full day that's where I was headed that's where I was headed before okay took me a minute that's all right I think like once in a while so I know it wasn't that long ago but uh Thanksgiving we get out like earlier too the kids get out a little earlier than they normally would on a half day that's another thing so you wouldn't want to keep our staff extra long and you know if we do the half day for our parent-teacher parents I would you know that would be my only yeah I mean not there I mean the students around here no school that's fine yeah we can do no school that day that's fine so if you go ahead Chris I got a lot to say tonight um in addition I I do think there's some Merit in what Dr Jenkins is saying because when we have I know that putting parent-teacher conferences smack dab in the middle of December also is a lot for both the parents trying to find time schedule time to come in and meet with the teachers as well as for the teachers so you know I I don't know if it's something that we we have continue I know this is just the first read of it um but I do understand and agree that maybe we should look at some other way of doing that but I am solid on making the 22nd a no school day I I just want the idea that we have our parent-teacher conferences on two Wednesdays and there's two Wednesday afternoons if you're a parent that has a commitment on Wednesday afternoons having two consecutive Wednesday afternoons does you no good in terms of being able to make a parent-teacher conference and so I don't know whether we want to think about do we do a Monday and a Wednesday do we do a Tuesday and Wednesday do we do a morning and an afternoon I don't know we need to try to figure out ways to meet our parents where they are and that having two similar days like I know if I was teaching a classes on Wednesday afternoon I can't go in either Wednesday afternoon it doesn't matter right um so I don't wonder whether we want to try to think about how to do that a little bit differently so that we can make it more accessible to our parents yep okay okay so Dr Gifford you'll and did you want to mention we we suggested that Friday and yeah if if you look for Friday before Labor Day September 1st that's a day there's no school that day we did that a number of years ago and that worked out well for people so anyway all right so will is that a happy dance it actually came from you Renee that's what I understand very good all right so we'll redraft um with the November 22nd possibly off yep and looking at what uh talk to Jenkins mentioned about switching some of those days and bring back um another draft yeah that's fine and then okay it goes there you'd have to correct me if I'm wrong uh because these also become like professional developments oh yeah we'll figure it all out you'll have to figure that all out with uh Katie Katie and Ross okay thank you all right all right Town Charter this note that I a note that I have in our pack it says the Town Administrator has sent notice that town departments must appoint a reappoint members from their respective departments slash committees to the Charter committee and that are not two current members are Ms Waite and Miss Brooks so are you interested in hanging in there yeah that's fine I mean I'm not running again so but um you know I'm happy to stay in as the appointee like I mean I certainly and we'll be finishing you know up our you know hopefully at a town meeting so yeah presentation and then you know of course Heidi I don't know if then you know she's our designee but of course she's on select board so I don't know if that means that we need to you know find a different and of course she's chairing it so we don't you know you know so I don't know if like so if we have to sift because she's got that position now or can you reach out to Mrs Brooks is she still in okay yeah I'm sure I was talking earlier in the weekend I'm sure she is yeah we'll we'll all yeah that's fine do you have to make a motion for sure yeah well yeah why don't we I make a motion that we reappoint um let's wait and miss pending um they're agreeable you know decision to participate but having done a deep dive and watched all of your videos I did I'm admitting it there was a lot of discussion around you know sometimes if some folks hadn't attended each year it's like Reinventing the wheel and repeating them so that consistency and moving forward makes the most sense yeah that's the key is what I'm thinking of too and I understand you know what she said but that's the you know and especially yeah they're saying that you're towards the end so yeah no we are together I mean it's longer than it should have been as it is just with coven and everything else and we have lost a few folks on the committee um for various reasons so we're you know we're we're a little short staffed on our committee if you will so hopefully this will help us add a few folks that just to kind of pull through the end yep all right so we have a motion by uh Mr Oliver to uh appoint to to reappoint Ms to Mary Waite and uh Heidi Brooks pending her you know her saying so BB would be fine to the uh townshire Review Committee all in favor say aye aye aye opposed motion Gary's unanimously thanks to both of them oh my God yeah I have watched some of the meetings but boy you know you change this word here what's it do down the line yeah yeah I can imagine how those words are are good cases for hour-long discussion oh yeah no doubt about it all right superintendent's update very very quick at Katie paveo already mentioned we got a speaking of half days this week so our strands will continue everything she talked about um I don't know if you were going to talk about we had the wonderful gas spot Court ceremony so that's that um you can mention anything else it was just a full house it was wonderful it was just wonderful um speaking of Mr perrotti last time he presented he said he had gotten a ten thousand dollar Grant award for the computer science program well through Jonas shoes he's now had that doubled so I don't know there's no stopping him and then the last thing I just wanted to say was Potter finally was able to have a Golden Ticket um child pulled the golden chicks they got a five thousand dollar award from the Feinstein oh good so he was so happy about that so every week I'd read his updates we didn't win again so that's it that's all I have fantastic all right yeah the only thing I have two good things that I have is number one on sports teams are doing fantastic I had the privilege of being here Saturday for uh the dedication of the basketball court for Steve Gasper and such uh very well deserved uh very done very Tastefully and very quickly so that type of deal you know got to watch that girls basketball team win and then the boys state for the boys game and that that was that was an exciting game and uh you know the as Dr Gifford said it was standing room only it was an excellent excellent game so and Steve was Steve was Steve I've know like I said I've known Steve since 1966 and Steve was Steve very very humble and you know how about some you know somebody else in that type of deal so that was good so that's all I have anybody else have anything Shannon so you know we heard a lot in public comment today and um sometimes I feel like it's a little bit like I know it's public comment is coming to us but by the time we get to sort of respond to some of that um our audience is thin quite a bit I appreciate Miss Mira as it has really held out here and and hopefully she'd pass this along but um I don't wonder One whether we might want to have a little opportunity to talk um after public comment about some of this because I think what's been missing in these conversations is I don't think you'll find five stronger supporters of public higher education and our staff in this community there is not a person at this table who doesn't believe that our I mean there's none of us that believe our teachers are overpaid we're spending too much on schools we hear these things we're a little bit between a rock and a hard place and and what I was thinking about when I heard that is I got my tax bill the other day and I don't live in a fancy house or anything you know I live in an average house and my tax bill was about forty four hundred dollars so I did a little research right and the average tax bill in Massachusetts is about seventy four hundred dollars right and Longmeadow which has the highest tax bill my house the house is worth less than mine would pay nine thousand six hundred dollars and in this article that I found they talked about Saugus was had a similar home value to mine and they pay 6.1 and that was a low paying community and the Boston region and so I appreciate every single thing that people come and say to us in public comment I think we hear it we feel it we understand we're trying but the problem is right I I thought about that forty four hundred dollars I had two kids in school you know a couple of years ago which meant I was paying twenty two hundred dollars a year to educate my child that's ridiculous right I mean the lowest paid private school around here is many multiples of that so I don't wonder whether I mean maybe people are watching on TV and they hear this and they see this but I don't wonder whether we might set aside a little bit of time on the agenda next time I don't want to get a back and forth but I do think it's important for uh the people who work in that District to hear and understand that the five of us are committed to them we support them we believe in them and we're trying I mean we really are but the problem is not that we're five stingy people who don't appreciate teachers but that you can't get blood from a stone and we just are I know you've said it you've done the calculations too Mr Nunes there's we our tax rate is very very low right and I know we had heard some figures about you know spending on Administration versus spending on teachers teachers just teachers right as about Mr Mr Kylie would probably know this more than I did but my quick math was about 45 of our budget administration's about three percent right like we in edu in the education business whether it's K-12 or higher education the education business is a people business and you need money to pay people and we don't have it right now um and so I I think it may be important for us to be able to affirm our commitment to our teachers and to let them know that we hear them because it's a lot of coming at us and you know um I don't want to get into an exchange but I would like to for people to hear some affirmation of our commitment to them because by like you know eight o'clock it's all cleared out definitely I also I think adding um that and and like again not like you said not a back and forth well also Aid in sort of telling that story more town wide I mean it's out there but I do think that it I don't know it might it might create a a better sense of the people making the decisions and working together in a way that is not violating any bargaining type scenarios but but we'll tell that story the story that we're together we're not we're not together right we're unified we believe in our schools and yeah I think you're very right about that yes no and I and I was I've been thinking that same thing you know because I feel like you know it's easy to say like well the school Community is just sitting on money and they just don't want to give it out like which is how and again I think to your point we're very pro-teacher all of us and Pro Staff and it's and I think there's a big PR and the way it's layered in our meetings is that we're not able like you said we're not able to convey that as well and so I think that prps that the town has to hear that they need to commit and you know what that means and I that's the piece that's lost and I know it's and it's hard because that you know we're walking by the teachers and there many of them are you know they're children's like beloved you know friends really I mean there are you know we appreciate them and we're seeing their signs and maybe if they're being caught you know for a moment on you know a newspaper but there are not real like the people who need to hear it and to feel it and understand the consequences they aren't getting that message it's it's all it feels internal and it's and it's it's you know it's it's a disservice to everyone involved in this process so because again like I think it's easy to say like well the school committee just doesn't want to give them you know there's plenty of money and and again I think we've been pretty transparent about the budget but we know the budget is a very complex you know Beast which will you know one of the reasons we're coming in tomorrow but I think we have to explain that like yeah we're getting so much more than than we're paying for and we've been so lucky to slide on like with the staff that have committed to this District but you know we've lost a lot so we have Chris I'll get you Kevin no and just to Echo what some of my colleagues have said we you know just on um we were invited and we actually engaged um on um December 19th uh an executive session with the select board we had conversations with them around some of the topics that have been brought to us we we certainly all care I there's no doubt about that and I wish there was more my teacher membership here um but we certainly all care we understand the concerns around health insurance and we understand uh there's a lot of valid points it gets brought to the table um I'm aware of that and I think we're all sensitive sensitive to that um and we're we're we're trying but at the end of the day you you know our tax rate is a price is a problem it's a detriment while in some some people will say we we're living large and we have a great tax rate and that's why we came to Dartmouth it is a detriment to some extent and to a large extent we got we got hung out back in the 80s when two and a half came in we had just revalued and everything and 59-21 D came in and that took care of that so uh we've got that yeah I I'm good I'm good with that I mean again as you've all said and I wholeheartedly agree I'm not getting into it you know they will speak right and then we'll speak if we want to but there will be no follow-up there will be no dialogue there will be no and I don't mean it in a disrespectful way bantering back and forth oh yeah they're going to speak and then we're going to spend and we're going to move on okay I think that's fine that's fine okay all right that being said our next meeting is scheduled for January 23rd 2023 here enjoy Martin Luther King at the chair will entertain a motion to adjourn into executive session for an update on collective bargaining and not return to open session roll call I'm sorry so moved moved by Dr Jenkins second by Miss Amaral on the motion mini discussion chair hearing done roll call vote please John Nunes yes Mary Waite here yes Shannon Jenkins Chris Oliver yes go Pats thank you and have a good evening thank you foreign

2023-01-11 Pima County, AZ YouTube / Baboquivari Education transcript source: youtube Baboquivari Unified School District Board Meeting January 10… · passage 1
for all the initialists and that's an entire School District s right now Mr Cody is the only one president I'm waiting for the other one or the other Representatives all right um goals as well Mr Quick if you don't mind that's coming to the podium and give us a summary called you three one you know I will ask us to read if you could help us um which page would you like it's time yes Mr Cody is one of our sixth grade teachers and Mr Cody will want to giving us the plastic which is [Music] the goals and give us a summary of course uh so thank you for letting me be here um numbers so thank you for giving us the opportunity to adjust of our students so um the 301 goals right now is in 26 files which will be the cohort groups and we are kind of from here students who are proficient minimally proficient for the cities 26 and 47 percent um it will be reduced by 25 each year and looking at a three-year Trend and from there it does go down to a minimal partition which is 26.9 which will sense each year for ELA for example so um we have we came to a different proton list which is um I believe which will be more friendly for teachers and staff for academic group so I do have an entire point I I was it's kind of hard for me to explain it just looking at that but if I have my own how we came with these numbers but um briefly that that is our um questions regarding through one goals or um however okay but yeah is it possible gift s and I don't see my older Representatives but I'll be rather having to speak on on all the other Dearborn goals um and once again I have made with that little one community and I'm familiar with everyone knows that'll be happy to answer any questions regarding the three or four years hello I guess the question that I would have a single um [Music] where those students [Music] um did you begin to see the economy came up with those and how and I I guess I'm thinking overall the school is fun for the upcoming years [Music] in the past we mentioned the percentage on top where it's supposed the expectation of growth for our students um [Music] but the waves down here is kind of different you think [Music] just to explain that to me I want to see how much the world is going to be accomplished um and what you call here she can explain um and I'll be happy to jump out of piggyback if you're trying to move somewhere in classroom is over talk about you know it won't show up there I'm going to email it to them I have a little presentation because I have the representative at the immediate and I really think this was hard to explain so that's visual belief that I create a PowerPoint that I'm going to share with you guys that will break this down so um [Music] um documents we've got okay yeah this is a public hearing so there's no action being taken from this Farm and then if you posted on board Knox that I could download it download it I don't somebody send it to me please is there any way you can post it on the agenda just send it to me please yeah if you send it to tech support actually I'm working on it I'm almost there refresh you can't yeah so this is uh the second slides that growth party that's where I have the hot area so this is my presentation that I can step into my um intermediate groups so this was a new goal that we were I shared with them that in math and reading each grade level students in a mental 29 file will be reduced by 25 years so what does that mean so on slide two here we have our broken part so we are going to Target students who are in minimal proficient which is in the bread so we want to focus on them to push them up into partial coefficient which just you know so we can see a change we could have Target students in non-proficient but if we move them up they're still in threat so we want to see that change so our Target my whole family right here is that we want to Target a minimum so students who scored between 26 and 49 percentile we want to reduce that group by 25 each year over three years so what is that so right here on the next page here here's an example so those students right there in the red those are the students that scored in between 26 and 49 there's one two three four five six there's eight students there's eight students in that cohort so that's our Target students our goal is we want to reduce those that group by 25 so we want two students to get out of that we want two students to get out of that so this the students are fifth grade so right now we want to get two students out of it in sixth grade we want two more to get out so every year we're reducing that cruise to get smaller by seventh grade that would be like cut lessons by less than half so that's how this goal is so hopefully that kind of improves a little bit of explanation and if we go down to like four so that was the before and after so just the one in yellow is our new our new tools on how to try to push students out of the internet intervention um really really looking into I really believe or we have to constantly monitor your students and and try to push um motivate them is to get them out of it because I I do stresses with my kids in my class I didn't show them hey I didn't show them a group that are in real cool part and tried to catch him out of it so it is a motivated especially with the colors you want blue and green and so that this is a thank you for Express sharing this is a lot easier to explain so and I did present this with Michael and this is this is um our old um I think what this message was referring machine but it's crazy we're looking at [Music] um like the last plants reported at least okay and overall increase whatever it is but it was generally a demonstration what was demonstrated so and that's where our Target is you don't know [Music] and he said that's what that's the word is if we're saying 100 of students are not going to be interested in okay we're going to achievable I guess keeping towards it doesn't give it to show us that that's what happened so that doesn't understand that because they're here okay sorry um also there's more that it will be coming during the retreat you're looking at a slide too um we should have started by that first payment what is the goal that we want to achieve over over the next three years and the focus over the next few years if you look at it it says 80 Master percent because that was good as the world the other one for all of our students um but nevertheless okay what we're looking at is right now where the knee is facing the school um based on a particular School this year basically tested end up with a pre-assessment there's a number of students in the beginning of the profession so they are spending their energy by another moving forward but nevertheless the overall uh or arching all the real world promote and ensure that we continue to put all of our emphasis is that 80 Master for 70 of the school is that across the board that is how we worked starting with the more Victory if we get the support this will become part of the Azure digital so the target you just mentioned this time the go-to is covered by the arrow it says go to an electrician attendance the minimal of 10 is 10.

great experience by taking his classes and also coming away with college credits too so we're super grateful having mark on staff and in addition to what he does in the classroom he's also the sponsor for National Honor Society and he helps the kids with their it it really is a kid Mad program but they do depend on Mr best and what he does to help guide them but it's it's great having somebody who's willing to help out volunteer he's also at all of the dances extracurricular activities anytime there's a need for a chaperone Mr vest is there and that's true dedicated Asian when you're there all day with kids at the high school and then you come to the events and you don't leave until midnight so it's it's like an on time with Mark so we're truly he really is a be our star and we're grateful for what he does too for Blue Ridge [Applause] thank you Mark appreciate everything you do we should also add that Mr and Mrs vest have a high school student that is a semi-finalist for the road the Merit scholar so exceptional parenting is what we think he'll come on now teachers of the month that's right thank you Dave for the elementary school Mamie Jackson teacher of the month [Applause] so it's hard to find a few just a few things to say about Miami she is one of the uh our third grade teachers which as most of you know is one of the hardest jobs in elementary school is to teach third grade she's our third grade team lead she she does a phenomenal job keeping her team on track her classroom kids are up and learning and moving around it's full of Engagement she's everywhere she needs to be she's always helpful and she's a massive asset to our campus we wouldn't be where we're at in third grade without Mimi being there for our kids so uh congratulations [Applause] I think Miss Hoffmeyer did Miss Cortez is she now here okay let's recognize Miss Cortez come on up honey let's let's talk about all that good things now that you're here absolutely so I would love to introduce everybody to Evelyn Cortez she is our Junior High student of the month and so while you're here I just want to tell I'm going to we I'm going to tell everybody one more time all the great things about you okay so Evelyn is the sweetest and most unassuming young lady she keeps her head down and works hard she's kind to others she shows great attention to detail in her assignments she is so kind thoughtful and respectful she works hard and seeks to help wherever she can she is just a great example to every Junior High student and a super young lady so she was nominated by a couple different teachers so again congratulations to Evelyn [Applause] thank you our other teacher of the month is Dr Teresa dick I didn't see Teresa here so they're they're actually working on their next project is the footless production so the drama's already in the next phase of what we're doing here at the school and it's one of the reasons that we're recognizing Dr D is because she's so involved with in so many different aspects at the school so we're grateful for what she does with the orchestra class the choir classes the different groups that she works with there and then also our drama production those of you that were able to come and see chip and and Bell and the last production that they did was amazing and we were waiting for great things with this next production so we're super grateful for Dr D and all the talent that she brings the patience and the long long hours that she dedicates to Blue Ridge so she's well deserving as staff of the month foreign think she's special because she's a Buffalo Bills fan of avid Buffalo Bills fan you don't want to cross her on that okay the next item on the agenda is item 1.1 and this is to organize the board with the president vice president and a secretary um this is open for discussion open for a nomination or whatever you know I been doing this for the last couple years you nominate Dave is there not going to be any discussion is there no other nominations no that's okay we can get over tonight so we have a nomination by Diana and as second by Chuck all in favor looks like we're here yeah I think that's it they don't want me they just don't want to do it themselves okay I I am I'm I'm going to nominate Chuck walaldo for vice president any discussion on that he said don't leave it though I have a second from Jennifer all in favor all right then we have a secretary we need to uh nominate a secretary who would well we've we've always acted as Mary never mind she's she's a paid employee she's going to stay when we're gone so yeah we appreciate Mary Mary keeps things running and uh keeps me online and going in the right direction I appreciate her and everything she does and in her willingness you know I drive by here eight o'clock nine o'clock at night and her car is still here or I'll come in on set I'll drive by on Saturday or Sunday evening and her car is here and I'm thinking Mary you gotta get a life you can't work here all the time or you look at the time of Texas and you know yeah right and she yeah that's right 5 30 in the morning thanks all right next item on the agenda then would be um item 1.2 resolution authorizing the approval and execution of funding proposals grants special projects vouchers warrant salaries and other expenses be signed between board members Dr Wright or yes sir Kimberly would you like to this is a an annual request that the administration makes the timing of the business doesn't flow in in alignment with the calendar and there are times where we have to approve business then go back and have the board approve it and so this is the same thing we've been doing for years it's an annual requirement so we'd ask that you would enable us to continue to conduct business between board meetings essentially are there any questions or comments on that I move we accept item with 1.1 as presented a second 1.2 I'm sorry item 1.2 I have a second from Margaret all in favor that would be unanimous okay item 1.3 yes this is uh conflicts of interest Dr Wright yes if anyone that has a potential conflict of interest can just submit it in writing to Mary that's all that's required if you're not sure go ahead and note it and send it to Mary so that's that's all that's needed a paper inside yep Mary will send you a form complete the form just list any and all and any potential conflicts and then as you know and have done in the past if an issue arises in any of those areas you don't participate you recuse yourself and we're good so Mary we'll get those to you before the next board meeting right we'll say this week thank you Mary okay there's nothing to vote on that we just need to make sure we take care of that I had one point for you a directive to of annual investment reinvestment in all monies within the school district service funds uh who would like to explain that for everyone why don't you handle that there you go for his office they're essentially our bank and then the treasurer's office invests their money um as they invest all the county money and this is just a redo that it's an annual thing just say that they're that they're gonna um have our money yes and without that authorization we can't invest it so we need the authorization for Kimberly and I to be able to invest money that so can accrue interest so it's just a authorization for you specifically in Kimberly specifically yes sir okay okay we have a second Move Motion by Diana second by Margaret all in favor also unanimous okay 1.5 governing board delegation of purchasing Authority this would be an IGA this is a another annual requirement in order for us to move and do business according to board policy we're able to a certain limit purchase items for school use and so as required is by this code the board has to prove that every year and designate specifically for this purpose only Kimberly and myself uh would be able to to make those purchases what we seek annual board authorization do you have anything to add Kimberly to that no it's just an annual requirement January business so any questions or comments about that not can we have a motion for item 1.5 as as indicated in the agenda have a motion from Chuck I'll second that all in favor that also is unanimous okay item 1.6 establishing meeting dates for the next uh 12 months after looking these dates over are there any conflicts that we might need to move just the only one I had Mr President is uh October 10th the last last day of the fall break and so we would respectfully request the meeting be moved to October 17th what's up we need to do it before we're having some conversation from the junior senator from Wyoming she reminded me the AFR has to be done by the 15th by the 15th of October this would um we didn't move this up a week or we could do it even like the 11th 12th um Wednesday or Thursday of that week when we return okay we could do the administration do that if it's acceptable to the board October 12th thank you Kimberly good catch and that way we don't have to change it in September because I think we had to move it three times last year because of me [Music] the regular basis no ma'am we could do the management were open during the first week of October if it works for the board in this month we could do that if it helps you Margaret the closest to the 15th the better it doesn't work for Kimberly that's a nice way of saying it thank you okay do you want us to have the media on the paper no we can um we will keep that on the 12th I just noticed that the February meeting is scheduled on Valentine's Day I don't know if that's I was doing that to save me from having to take them away from dinner chick now our cat's out of the bag so February we need to move that what date should we move that too we could do it the Thursday if you'd like the 16th I mean look at that is that the same day no the town meetings are the first and the third right or they're the second floor anyone else have a conflict so what what day should we move February meeting to the 16th got a Thursday the 16th pull your mind down I can I can't even hear and I'm 16th 16th because we care about Dr Wright taking his wife out to dinner for the Valentine's Day just wait she'll have a concert or something you'll have to go too I'm okay I'm okay with that February 16th 15th 16.

foreign [Music] call please Mrs amarillas here Mrs Ellen here Mr mcgibbon Mr Osterville yeah okay with that we need to elect um we're governing Court officers [Music] we'll start with the president we nominate Steve osterley Mr President um okay real cool this is Mrs Ellen yes Mr mcgibbon yes and next week Andy clerk um is next my mom my name is it's okay people this is do you expect yes Mrs amarillas yes Mrs Allen yes Mr mcgiven yes Mr yes thank you Miss Ellen congratulations yes yeah right between us two hands and bells don't be playing with my Gap perfect so with that we're going to break into a study session just to give you guys a little background as to really why um Roxanna and I were at the asba conference back in December and we went to a couple really good session breakout sessions and it was really is well this book kind of sums it up this is one of the ones they recommended wasn't it um building great school board and superintendent teams so a lot of it is we're going to do start more lack of a better word leadership training but that's really isn't how to lead it's really is okay what is the school board really about right what is our function because I know when I came in I didn't have a clue you know and it's still you know people think we have different roles that well you know I'll just take care of that I'm a board member or I'm you know that's not really how it works um but I think some people will do that and a lot of it will talk also we'll talk Maybe not today but you know how to be a cohesive team and have you know a cohesive vote a message from the quote board instead of me or you know I'll pick on myself so um that's kind of the reason of it we got really psyched up it was really it was actually pretty cool oh it's one of those moments where we're thinking why don't we think of that because we had been talking all year in terms of wanting to have individual board meetings with individual board members um as the president's superintended just to say what you know what what's going well what would you like to see more of or less of or how are you feeling what are your big rocks and we just never were able to schedule those so I think this is a good way for us to start um we did order the books and of course they were supposed to be in before Christmas break and they didn't all come in they came in in separate orders so we received two and we're waiting for the others to come in um they're supposed to be in by the end of next week but nayani did send you an email that has the introduction in the first chapter um for you to kind of read and look at uh and and I like this because it was talking about a systemic approach to balancing roles abilities because a lot of times as board members you know what is our role what do we do with situations come up um in terms of what superintendents and and what boards can actually do so I'm excited about this and what we'll do is we'll do a little book study so for our study session in February so what we need to do today is kind of look at I wanted for Miss amarillas for her to look at the board goals that we've established they're new because we didn't establish them until the summer but to get back on track in February we're supposed to identify board goals that go to the board agenda in March and then that drives my superintendent goals so since they're fairly new I don't anticipate that they're going to change that much but with Mrs Amadeus coming on board and then with a new board member we have time to tweak our goals and have the discussions on what we want to do as a team so what I did um give and I'll give everybody a few minutes to review these are our three governing board goals that we established in the summer that our board approved you'll see on the back we have the Continental smart goals and these were the goals that were developed by the school based on governing board goals okay so I'll give you a chance to read those and then you have the Continental way roadmap to Excellence and this is the more detailed version that we shared with staff on how we meet our goals another game okay so we'll just take maybe five ten minutes for you to look at the to read the documents over and then we'll have a conversation because we do um want to hear from each of you board members as to what you see um they also talked about desired goals like what what is it that use that your what is your desire for Continental Nutri now and May at the end of the school interview that we're starting a new school year okay so we'll give you maybe um 10 minutes amazing kids but thank you and it's a copyright incredibly your job is to keep me in my decisions she needed to go back to our office and members of the audience this is a study session so you can ask questions and give input as well okay so anybody that's here can chime in this is foreign students both for instance its um system is primarily this is the staff that's the staff going to get requests so you'll see mainly like on the teaching practices on the roadmap to success on what we're expecting teachers to do in the classroom and then you get to weekly teacher expectations um four where it says have students track and reflect on their own learning growth that's where the data binders come into play that we initiated with this year did announce that since it is a study session you're welcome to give feedback or contribute or if you have any thoughts to share them as well and what you're reviewing is what's in our Google Docs that we've shared in the morning so while you're finishing how I read just something that I got from this book 10 questions every school board membership ask right and it it talks about um like in places like China Singapore it's a central government Authority that controls everything including education where in the United States it's decentralized um and it says simply stated the local locally elected School Board is a uniquely American institution whose roots are found in the early citizen sphere of powerful central control in a very real sense the local school board is an expression of the federalism concept on which this nation's government was built up to have my classes sorry the concept suggests that governing power is best leveraged in the hands of people we're a member of the community as community members they are held accountable to those they represent and you need to be positioned to understand the wants and needs of the local populace um so being elected and working for free still we have a lot of responsibility you know mainly to you know at the end of the day the kids here at the school that's when I boil it down that's pretty much sums it up you know it's you know we'll all disagree how we get to that but we can come into um you know so with that if you go to I want to start with this no no we can but you're not going to do well are we okay with you've had enough time to review the jobs okay yep so we're not going to do all 10 of these so I think we'll look at a couple and I'm able to throw them from time to time or once we dig into our assignment Mr Rico is going to get us so the purpose of a school board right we kind of talked about most countries don't govern education the way we do um so we need to understand you know why it was put there in the first place because you know like if we lived in Texas you've got to take a semester or two of Texas history and I remember that we I don't know yes okay but there are some states that don't happen yeah um so it's you know kind of I guess it's uh I didn't really realize that that it's such a unique position that we have across the country in our role um even at you know our petite school if you will so let's just start with you we'll just you got 30 seconds what's the purpose of the school board just a high level well obviously the board members are have the authority to hire a buyer the superintendent and that's primarily you know the who the boy can hire or fire is fully your superintendent I feel that it is also to ensure that we are budgeting appropriately spending money that board members are aware during board meetings we work hard to be transparent so that board members who are elected officials when you're out in the community and you hear people make a lot of assumptions that you have the knowledge and the background to say no I know for a fact that this is why we do what we do right you know we hold true to our mission and our vision statement and everything that we do um is in support of our mission statement and our vision statement and I think really just being able to listen and to bring back the feedback again referring parties to the superintendent or to the principal to to go through those channels one other thing is when I look at do you prioritize leadership development I think we're all lifelong Learners I think leadership training is critical to my role to the principal's role to the director's role even to the board role so that we can make sure that we are being true effective leaders and that we do acquire the skills the patience the knowledge to truly lead our students and our staff and our community in the right direction I think we'll just go down the line so yeah it really is is to just kind of focus on what our vision is right building for the future learning cooperating caring for all it's outside that scope then it's outside our job um you know you mentioned hiring and firing you know thank you drew for your history of doing doing that and let's hope we don't have to do that for a very long time did not have that on my resume I'd be okay with that um but as you guys know we did spend a lot of time on on well our roadmap and the our goals which then trickle down into the superintendent's roles and then it's the superintendent's job really is to do that implementation by using the dianas of the world Etc who you know like but um but you know and when we're out on the street you know you I'm just speaking from my experience you know I don't get caught on a lot saying well let's go there what education are you doing you guys aren't teaching that critical race to everything are you every once in a while the the biggest thing is just refer to Roxanna at the end of the day because you never know when they're going to call a press even here um so that's that's the last thing for one of somebody inappropriate to misinterpret what you might have said um Ruth just you know we don't have many parents that come up to us and say well you know why does Johnny have so much homework or why does this go on over there that's I guess in the past they did not anymore yeah yeah right right but um so we'll just kind of do that and then we'll walk through the continent away and are just to review our goals what is your desire for between now and me when you just think about one big rock or one desire that you have really is to keep improving in the academics and of course the character because a lot of these kids this is all they have three kids um I can go backwards a little bit um the big rock and I have it noted in here I think what just kind of can Encompass everything it was something Mr Lathan said for I heard him say several years ago that really stuck with me was we're just trying to produce good citizens and that means they know how to communicate with each other they know how to ask questions they know how to learn they know how to contribute to society um it stuck with me and it's something I've kind of Taken on as a parent I'm not raising my kids I'm raising citizens of this world they're going to have to survive out there they're going to have to contribute um so I I think that's the biggest rock that I can think of um I think good academic rigor falls under that um and just creating curious people so they do always learn for the rest of their life um fundamentally but I believe the purpose of the school board is is that to um you know the fundamentals of American government every pretty much every level of government um is built with checks and balances we're here to provide checks and balance to you um we're here to represent um people without high-level degrees in education kind of bring in a Layman's perspective at least that's what I tell myself to justify myself being here um and um a way that our our community can have some control and effect on what our kids are doing but most of their Waking Life good thank you and it's interesting and I was at a meeting this morning at the U of A and they had a gal from Virginia talking about social emotional learning and you know a whole conversation about what is social emotional learning and why do we use it form and talking about in the workforce in the real world you know what's lacking our people's ability to collaborate to cooperate to listen to each other to take somebody's idea and respect it and grow on that and that's truly um you know a lot of it talked about people who go and adopt social emotional learning curriculum well yes you can focus solely on that and that the academic piece go by the wayside but it has to be a balance and they're talking about how do you systemically keep teaching academic standards yet when you do project-based learning when you are motivating kids to work together and do Hands-On projects you are teaching all those skills cooperation listening taking turns being respectful so it's not something new you know we talked about when we did the Seven Pillars of character or building good character and there was a huge movement on character building 20 years ago and you had people saying well I don't want you to teach my kids character skills because we're going to do it at home on our own but we're building and modeling when you talk about that we're modeling professionalism we're modeling the exact skills that we want our kids to acquire we want them to be able to listen to collaborate to cooperate to respect each other's opinions to be able to respectfully agree to disagree when needed to um but to to have open minds right to be able to solve problems so I'm glad that you mentioned that piece of that academic rigor because it's all intertwined and it's something it's not something separate good thanks well I think the purpose of the school board I think logistically we talk about that was our superintendent and making sure that you're steering the ship in the correct direction that's it but I I want to focus a little bit on what you just said about the ringer because I think that's one of the reasons I wanted to be part of it is too many times in public education it seems to be in my personal opinion that there's there's not a lot of rigor and and it's extremely difficult in a public school because you've got different levels rigor for one student is completely different for you know something's tough for this student maybe a piece of cake for that one so it's incredibly difficult I get that but that's that's what make this makes this country great is that to push everybody I'd rather I'd rather push kids to to to do higher and better and have them maybe not reach that but at least they're stretching to reach that because I think in my opinion there's too much of just sort of being satisfied with them the status quo in in overall in public education um I think that's where the board can come in we can take strengths and that each one of us have from our different backgrounds whatever they may be whether whether it could be something with the grounds or the buses or the or hiring and firing or finances or whatever it may be we each kind of contribute a piece of the pie and that's what makes a board that should make us reward successful because you're each contributing something if you're all contributing the same thing then you're just going to sit there and fight all the time I mean if you all have the same strengths if we're all Financial Geniuses or whatever so I think that's what makes it more successful in my mind is that you have to you have to know what piece of that pie that you can help with and yeah and you're right it's not you don't have that's not your assignment you don't have to do just that but that kind of can be your focus and maybe that's where you can contribute the most because there's certainly things that I can't contribute in I should learn about it um but maybe these guys can you know that right where I can't they can't so that's why I think the benefit of report is and I've I've experienced education in other countries and yeah it's definitely different here um but I think we're very blessed as a society to have sort of input from a board rather than having some top-down approach where yeah it just fits for everybody and just make it work um I've been a part of that in other countries and it's it's not to me it seems completely counterproductive the media just sort of you kind of put people where you think they're going to fit and hope for the best and I think um you're right Mr attention in terms of when we talk about trusting each other I mean I'm thinking about physical when I came okay maybe we're identified as a school the school adequate progress in reading and math and the changes we had to make to get to where we are now out of school Improvement status with special education I couldn't have done it if you wouldn't have trusted me in terms of who we hired how we changed the model of how Pericles were working as students they were being pulled out they were in a classroom working at their own level and we needed to get our special ed kids integrated into the classrooms we needed to work with our teachers to give them the skills to better accommodate them and work with them and push them or we wouldn't be sitting here saying we're out of school improvement with our special needs students because they did not progress and it took time right but we have to trust the process too because we know some of these changes were painful and Mr Nathan remembers conversations that we had and with teachers and with psychologists and with Council counselors and even kids trying to build them up to say you're going to be okay in this classroom because we're going to take care of you and we're going to give you the help that you need to be able to understand content you can differentiate the way it's taught you can get the same content at a different reading level for kids to still receive the state standards that they need and as you know it was it's it's a tremendous success to achievement a rating but keeping it is even perfect so if you don't have rigor you're not going to keep it very long so you have to you have to sort of continually approve even if it's just that much you have to continually try to improve on what you've you did the day before or the semester before and that typed into again the motivation that we're talking about also and with um a lot of the kids today in my training was talking about how do we motivate kids because we do have kids but once they get to the top they kind of feel like they can slack off right and not give it their all right you don't understand what it means to do well like we're telling the kids now you have to do well on this Benchmark and show what you know because we will intervene so we don't want to intervene at the inappropriate level right if you're just um so it's pulling all that data together to say we know that either this was just a fluke in the test because we know this is your ability and this is what you need or truly let's identify what you need to give but we have to work at keeping kids motivated to want to do better so that they don't have that status quo you know I'm okay where I'm at mine is ditto to Whitney Center and you know academic rigor for me is is very important and also the um say the orderly learning environment the um I like that PBIS is being implemented here and um and I think that our purpose is to support you Roxanna and continuing um to um help our students succeed academically and that we continue with the a rating because it is harder to to maintain and um and you know and I think that our our role is also to be the voice of the students the parents teachers in the community well I think back with Andrew said too we have including Roxanna we all come from different places different backgrounds different job sets different everything which I think is really going to help us succeed and I do have to say that I like some of the stuff that Mr Layton has been doing here who maintain a safe and orderly environment yes and we're doing more than what other school districts are doing in the um in our regular board meeting we are going to be sharing a little bit more on um our climate surveys but we will do a thorough a more thorough conversation in February once we get a little bit more responses but I'll speak to that with the statement or the environment of how kids and staff are feeling it because it is definitely apparent that kids feel safe parents feel that their kids are safe and you know we take that very serious very students anything from the audience any thoughts excited with the roadmap and how things are going and the support that we've had the beliefs in it from our teachers and our staff our parents and from our students because they're slowly starting to hear all of the things that we're working towards with the goals that we're working towards we're very proud of them and you'll get a chance to see them a little bit some of the work that they're doing as well we've also talked about how covid you know really gave parents uh it was eye-opening for parents and grandparents that were having to support their children in regular coursework um because it is hard and the standards are difficult and it's you know teachers are trained for a reason to teach these typical Concepts because kid and parents you know we're we're not taught to teach our kids at that level and even teachers struggled to teach their kids I think even Mrs Cuevas that she was going through two different grade levels with her daughters and try being the principal but also being responsible for their learning online and um that gave her a good true perspective and ability to to understand our parents that had questions and were struggling and to also give teachers ideas on how to mainstream it and keep it simple right so that everybody could be successful and not be completely stressed out because we had parents who came in meltdowns and grandparents and we just reassured them it's okay you know I never came in I was too busy melting down it's not but you know you're not gonna ruin your child you know you're spending quality time understanding what they're doing and just stay the course with us and it's going to be going to be okay back to the aid rating when we were in parent advisory you were giving us the stats on what the percentage was that you had discussed with the teachers and I talked to a couple of the teachers I'm just out about the stuff they felt confident with the the goals you set for them to send for the students so I I'd like to hear that as teachers were like yeah we can do this that they had the confidence in your team that you you're going to help them make their goals so I mean that was comforting as a parent seeing what they were yeah they screenshot they could make that goal right you made it a goal that was in their mind something that they did reach right because when we State ten percent of the kids when you break it down and look at your classroom data you know two kids three kids and you know where they are academically can you help those to help those children not that you're going to ignore everybody else right these are so being very strategic and helping teachers understand their data and breaking it down and then you did a good job with that I mean from the couple that I had talked to that they I felt they felt confident that they understood what they needed to do to help get that 10 increase good yes that's good to know good to hear we like to hear the good things too yeah it's like the second bullet on goal number one right ensuring resources are available you know is to help all of everybody get those resources um you know like we don't know how to use them but we're not educated and trained to do that but um you know our you know like at my company you know we have certain people do certain things because that's what they're trained and that's what they're good at right so you know let's enable you know you to be the superintendent and help you enable the enemy the principle and then you know it rolls down from that and in terms of you know we didn't used to have a monitor you know so we had we hired Mr Curtis three years ago and um so that's another thing with the board on ensuring we have the resources they get here um it's important and it's we're grateful that when we say we need something for this reason and the rationale that you respect what we're saying and know that we do you know we are fiscally responsible and we do need this we're in a unique situation also with our playground monitors because I've never heard of a district or a school where playground monitors are willing to come in and just monitor the playground for two hours a day like we and and we have people who are willing to do that for us ourselves and teachers had to do that yeah teachers were having to do it or you had to have full-time Bearer Pros that were being pulled out and it's just I think it's it's so nice that you get fresh you know they come in they're excited they're willing to work two three hours a day um and and it's it's a nice model but it's something we have we're in a unique situation where we are still able to do things like this to meet the needs of the kids and the teachers yeah because teachers their planning time and like a lunch break yes In Peace So with this book building great School Board superintendent teams so when they come in we'll just read the first two chapters we'll have a study session in February so that we can look at our board goals and say do we want to tweak them do we want to change them um you know what do we want to do and then we can talk about the first two chapters in the book okay and it's it's a pretty easy read with bullets and so we're we're excited and I love book studies sure I'm sorry this is somebody else but you get to log into a book today [Music] yes yes we could even have book club outside off campus sometime maybe when we celebrate that we finish the book and our audience here our directors could see whether we're actually implementing what we're learning as we go along right so in a couple of minutes um some students are going to come in and show us their um so we'll take a break if you want to take a break into the restroom and our students will come in and get ready to show you their data finders and then they can start the regular meeting at so in the next couple weeks we'll get you guys to come in one by one since we don't want to have a violate the open meeting law it's just to come into the three of us for an hour or so yes are some of the students here already two two okay oh yeah that's an advantage of Atlanta right yeah probably to remember opportunity [Music] okay [Music] thank you so yeah under your skin foreign so those that are here for culture of the month please register over here at the table if you haven't already so with that we're we're in a study session so out of that we are going into agenda item number five approval of religion I'll move different the agenda's written [Music] Mrs Allen yes Mr Astrid yes and with that we'll go to six to approve the minutes from the last meeting on December 5th 2022.

we will now move to the internal organizational items beginning with 3.01 times of meetings Dr McCord thank you madam president governing board members uh it's been this past year we've held our meetings and and I would like to say first and third Tuesdays of the month but because of calendar and all that that's what we try to stick to but we also move them around based on what's going on uh whether it's a holiday or something's going on in a district that's pretty important but generally we stick to those uh days and those weeks that those will occurred in the month at 6 PM we have once a month we have our policy meetings usually that's in the second or third week just depends on where that falls and that usually happens at 11 30 a.m to 1 P.M and those two meetings one of the meetings for the governing board in the evenings the first one is usually a work study with the brief board business meeting and the second meeting of that month is a general governing board business meeting and so uh I I think those times are workable I think we had a discussion but we also have two new board members this year that if there needs to be more discussion on that I would leave that to you foreign is this something I should have asked before that we need to take emotion on or is this just an internal thing no right I don't I think you vote on it yeah vote on it yeah okay um well then let's just discuss okay I I think that this has worked out really well for us in terms of the you know the six o'clock time and and the 11 30 and I you know like this is a perfect example of a week that would last week was when the first Tuesday was but we're still on on a winter break correct so you know I think that that given circumstances that you know that this is all worked out well it um Dr McCord does Tuesday give you enough time Tuesday's work I mean I I think historically we're used to it and so um I'm totally okay with Tuesdays Saturdays you guys want something I'm just kidding is there any further discussion other board members is Tuesday at 6 PM for the evening meetings is that satisfactory for you yes okay then it looks like that will be where we keep the evening meetings and then will Tuesday the Tuesdays that we have the policy meetings is 11 30 to 1 is that okay for everyone we can you can make that work with around your schedules okay and all of these meetings are listed right now on the website we have them and they're already they're always published correct um and then we also post it the night before within 24 hours to make sure that everybody knows but I think it's important to keep it consistent I think Tuesday nights at six has been a successful time that allows people to come if they need to finish their duties and then come attend but also keeps it early enough that we can finish our meetings in a timely manner so correct okay I would be in favor of that as well so I will ask then for a vote all those are going to make a motion oh we do I'll make a motion okay it's okay I move that we continue with our Tuesdays most of the time the first and third unless the calendar there's a calendar reason at six o'clock and then our our more our day meeting which is a policy meeting from 11 30 to 1 and that they all would be on Tuesdays first and third and then usually what is it the second usually it's the second but with the with the option that there are times we might have to change thank you Mr Jetty it's been moved is there second my second thank you Mr Thompson it's been moved and seconded that we have our meetings stained have they've been the first and third Tuesday nights 6 p.m with calendar changes as needed and then the second Tuesday at 11 30 to 1 for a policy meeting with calendar change if needed so all those in favor oh wait let me ask if there's any further discussion just since we've done that no okay all those in favor please vote by saying aye aye and any opposed with me okay thank you that will take us now to the review and approval of Rules of Order Dr McCord thank you madam president governing board members policy b e d dictates what our Rules of Order and I'll read through them for everybody it states the governing board prescribes rules for its meetings as follows a it shall hold a regular meeting at least once each month during the regular school Year and may hold other that his father gets a room tonight and gets better so with that being said can we please call this meeting to order roll call please Brown is here Dr Hall Mr swallis here this is Walters here Mrs Galbraith president Albrecht vice president here all right thank you let's stand for the pledge I pledge allegiance one nation under God indivisible between liberty and justice for all Walters can you please read the mission statement to empower bright new future all right um Cheryl do we have any public comment s none all right great moving right along um board updates do we have any board updates the only one question I have is Ken do you have an update on the construction of not the high school but everything else that we did last summer where they're at with RL Soho and then maybe with CC Holdings uh I think we're good yeah I'm sorry um I think we're about probably about 95 I was actually Keith can you would you come up to Mike kind of give an update let's see uh I haven't talked to Keith in a couple days so let's see if we can get kind of an update and then uh Keith bolzon you know collaboratively on the summer projects from last year where we're at with everything I think the big piece of equipment we're still waiting for is the chiller for here I heard that it was supposed to be delivered in February it's been pushed back again I heard yeah it got moved back to late February now but I'm not holding my breath on that either because and that one was actually supposed to be delivered at the same time as the uh Chiller for talalo so you know ordered at the same time same Chiller basically and and for some reason that one's just they can't get it here uh all in all over the past couple weeks you know with the uh the break they did they tied up a lot of the Loose Ends um things you know we were they're actually uh Architects are in the district right now uh doing punch items especially areas that haven't been looked at so that'll be good to hear uh the outcome of that um I don't know I think Ken's probably got that 95 is a good good number um we find Loose Ends you know we hear about them certainly they did a lot of door Replacements over the break and that was a big one of the big holdups I don't know if you remember we had to buy a bunch of uh temporary doors and things like that so those were down to half an hour doors in and there's the doors on the uh exterior Balmoral for that the pump room so uh yeah that's all coming along good we'll have some painting to do that we can't do right now of course on the exterior stuff but all in all things are looking pretty good and we you know we really find out a lot uh once these walkthroughs are finished so you're thinking in February everything will be done except the chiller for here I'm pretty confident on that I I think the big projects that we had left uh one is the East Wing accrete that now is occupied tomorrow we actually have the elevator inspection so that'll be coming online then the actual uh facility itself they were able to move in back in December right before break so that's been done occupied we've gotten uh substantial completion on that they're just doing a little bit of punch list items that you know are really minor um the other one is Keith had mentioned over break uh they finished up the PPS area so that whole area has been done they're actually moving back into there starting tomorrow so that's been all done and then over break they were doing a lot of the demo of a lot of the old rooftop units that were left up there why we put the new ones in I will tell you that when we did our specialist abatement which is now which we finished on time everything was done over break we did run into some additional asbestos over in this gym here when they took down the rooftop unit uh uh I happened to find some asbestos come down so luckily and the good news was we had the contractor here at the time so they were able to contain everything take care of that so all of that was taken care of over break and everything is is good so on that so the all the abatements done that we needed over break and everybody's gonna be back in their building yes yep everything was done on time and everything yes and now with CC Holdings how was our schedule for the Edition uh I as far I I haven't heard yet as far as I know I mean they're running into some good weather now so Keith was just telling me they're planning on pouring the flooring over there in the gymnasium hopefully they pour the gym floor tomorrow which is huge because that's kind of the center of the whole project uh without that you know because that's got a um cure for over six months before they can put the gym floor in you know things like that so uh to pour tomorrow or this week is is a great thing you know because they were held up by weather um they started out good but couldn't get the rebar and then then they got the rebar and then we got weather and uh yeah so right now this will put us I think that'll put us back on track good good track um So the plan is on that is if you remember originally we had talked about August 3rd for substantial completion that was then pushed to the 20th so we're still stick with August 20th for substantial completion and occupancy for that facility right now okay and a lot of that's that's lead time issues still with rooftop units things like that right the other thing is that we have started the process I think as the board knows we did award the board did award the contracts for next Summer's projects already uh on everything it's at DLC Talala that one will be coming soon that'll be going out to bid real soon uh and the equipment has begun to be ordered for that stuff already too so we've done that process all right sounds good thanks uh just a quick question this kind of leading into not a Segway uh just Bill Bill asked that question we have about 2023 Life Safety survey coming up and are we going to have a life safety survey performed by our architect as well as a physical assessment well the physical assessment is already done so great so that was already done so they because they're licensed to do that so that's correct safety okay we're right now the architect actually right now is going through projects making sure that all the life safety items have been completed that was the last question that was my last question to make sure that if it hasn't we're able to catch that up next summer in our in in all of the bid documents and all this stuff let me take a step back sure you're saying that if we had not completed our 2013 life safety items right we're looking to catch up and there's a couple into the next year there's there's a couple small items I'll give you an example one of them is like a grease trap in one of the buildings that we had to had to replace that we did not get into like I forget it was either a creative Balmoral and we didn't get it into last year's projects which is the first year so they'll be getting it to this year so then it'll be completed now so by the end of this summer all of those will be completed okay and then you know we'll start the new process of having a new survey okay we've got a new Regional superintendent yes and the past Regional superintendents superintendent gave us an extension of some manner and obviously we're not looking to Embark upon any Life Safety surveys extension no no okay at this point at all I mean you know our plan is to make sure we have everything wrapped up by the end of this I would love to see us clean slate 2013.

2023-01-11 Johnson County, IN YouTube / Center Grove Schools transcript source: youtube Center Grove Schools Board Pre-Ratification - December 2022 · passage 1
of course really advertised based on all the guidelines we have around gratification hearing I now open this free gratification meeting I would like to call and tell them to provide information about the terms of the tentative agreement of the collective bargaining agreement that's correct Mr Alexander we did post the tentative agreement Monday evening before after the association that ratified on their side this is a requirement of Senate act 390. it's been around for about three or about five years I guess now actually that we posted 72 hours in advance and we'll discuss it um So today we're just going to share the details of the summary agreement the board is I think planned to meet and take action on this on Tuesday morning and so that'll be the actual official action there'll be no vote taken this evening I'm going to run through the bullet points that Miss uh Howard has up on the screen for us the standard of agreement equates to a little over eight percent for the uh of an increase for the entire collective bargaining agreement individual teachers though will see a total base salary increase that averages out to 5.65 and there's a couple ways that we get to that number the first one is just a base increase to the salary schedule so we take everyone's current rate and we add 4.18 to it and that's the increase the second step of that increase is a row advancement for teachers who are returning from last year and met the evaluation criteria and for them individually it's a 2.15 percent increase to their compensation from the prior year however overall when we factor in all teachers it's about 1.47 so we take those two numbers the 4.18 and the 1.4 seven and that's what gets us to that average of 5.65 I've noted there the two differences in compensation again a returning and qualifying teacher based off Effectiveness would get a 6.33 base salary increase from last year and a new teacher to Center Grove or someone who didn't meet the evaluation requirement would would receive the the 4.18 that's not entirely true a new teacher would receive the 4.18 if you don't make the evaluation criteria you don't get those raises this is one of those years where I think everyone's going to get it so that's why I'm using some of that language a column advancement we do this for teachers who receive more degrees credits they move on to a Masters or Masters and Beyond they get a lane change it's a slightly higher percentage it moves them over in the in the salary scale and we granted those this year and then the final compensation increase for for all up top is a one-time retention bonus will be paid out on December 30th to all currently employed teachers at that time that's in the amount of 500 and you'll see the boards using cash balance and roughly the amount of 3.12 or 312 thousand dollars for that equates to a 0.88 increase for the entire bargaining unit um that that number that I'm presenting there also includes some social security contributions that we make public teacher employee teacher retirement funds and others so what's that get our scale then um our new opening salary our starting base salary will be 46 000 on 15 and our top base salary will be 88 863 dollars and then I wanted to point out just a couple things as we've talked about individual salary increases a lot through this process the lowest base salary increase this would be a newly hired teacher without a b or with a ba that does not receive that road advancement would receive another eight it would receive a base increase of eighteen hundred dollars from last year to this year that's not inclusive of that 500 retention bonus just wanted to point that out um and the highest would be a teacher actually on the second highest row that's row 27 they would move to row 28 they would have a masters plus 32 in their degree and they would receive a base salary increase of 5300 from last year so then we get in some of the other items that are outside of Base compensation and these items provide an additional 1.54 to the entire borrowing unit and you'll see there in the amount of about 546 thousand dollars we will increase the ECA schedule by 4.18 percent so the entire scale will move up there and then we're going to add some new ECA positions or some coordinator positions in the handbook some assistant golf coaches some event managers to help with the events and then the biomed coordinator we've done this in our science department for chemistry and physics and some other specialty sciences and that's what that relates to um we then have changes to the healthcare plan we've had a positive year in health plan in the health care plan fortunately we don't have to repeat a large increase like last year but the committee did meet back in August discussed and agreed at the time to to present a a recommendation of a two percent increase for employees but to offset that with the holiday and so what you'll see that two percent increase for the highest plan on a family member would be a seven dollar per pay increase all others would be at six dollars or less per pay the district's going to actually increase their share by over five percent to try to keep that impact on the employee as low as possible and then as I mentioned a one-time holiday that actually equates to a four percent reduction we have roughly 24 we have 24 pays in a year so that's where that we get that number so the net increase will be down for 2023 for our health plan members but we will continue to get monthly Revenue coming in to the Health Plan fund to keep that moving forward and keep us back trying to get to where we want to be with our Reserve level and no change the age HSA at this time the agreement also includes a match increase to 850 for the 403 b we did have an herb compliance finding last spring that we removed that language it was something we'd add in the prior year and that's no longer needed so we struck that we'll strike that from the agreement we have moved sick leave usage language out of the contract and into the handbook just to give us more flexibility and a sick leave is fluctuating on us as we all know after the pandemic we can make changes to that as we need to just with some discussion and then finally we're going to renumber the salary scale I've talked to the the association leadership on this we're going to renumber get rid of those two rows that were zero across the board and we're going to add a note so folks when they look in Skyward so teachers when they look in Skyward will know I might have been on row row five in the old salary scale but now I'm two rows lower why is that we're going to put a little note on there to say prior to this this was row five so they can kind of track that through Skyward and have some some knowledge of themselves that we didn't just move them down two rows but it by label it might look like that so but the amounts would stay the same I believe that's the end of the the summary document Mr Alexander all I need to share for today thank you Mr chairman the appropriate time for members of the public to comment on the attendant of the agreement are there members of the public president who would like to comment cut the microphone did this can be really awkward if I have to lay on this table got it got it okay we appreciate the opportunity to say if you were this morning um we were asked by our membership uh to report on our ratification meeting and share some observations that we hope will take us into better bargaining next year despite our membership ratifying the board's offer we likely don't need to say that teachers were disappointed in what they ratified the vote was close and we have never seen teachers more dismayed dejected and resentful many ballots offered commentary that we cannot share at a microphone but none of it was snarky or funny all of it was angry our members believe the board adherence to the idea of parity and compensation is something that serves administrators more than it does teachers a detail obvious to anyone who has seen and shared the public information we have highlighted these last months the disparity it creates is also something that has been acknowledged by District leaders and board members in past discussions of compensation the board is a governing body and the board can choose to change it yet it was the adherence to the practice that led to our members rejecting the offer and then to mediation and our members believe that adherence to parity is selective for example there is no parity whatsoever in the way retirement benefits are allocated and since 2014 with the inclusion of contributions to the 401a the disparities grown exponentially there's also no parity in the way that teachers compete with frivolous spending that adds up to what is likely hundreds of thousands of dollars every year cell phones Landscaping redecorating updating buildings and Technologies teachers are forced to use and the continual Reliance of siphoning off over 9 million a year from the education fund we bargain to retain teachers since we requested the bread documents in September we've lost seven our own Anonymous surveying of teachers revealed that 125 Center Grove teachers say they are actively exploring other employment the same survey revealed that 13 Center Grove teachers are currently interviewing for jobs outside the district and 16 have already decided not to return next year our plan is to survey them again in the spring the board has shared public statements in which they assert their value for Center Grove Educators the events of this year's bargaining are not convincing perhaps disappointing the people you say you value is a necessary result of difficult decision making whatever your reasons if you do value teachers and if you want to retain them you need to find a way to regain their trust and show them you do value them because simply put very few of them believe you thanks for the time seeing none may not close this meeting or I now close this public hearing one of the members of the board who have any comments or questions okay there is no board action required at this time we'll take action on Tuesday Morning um is the second piece of the meeting in the process that's governed by IC Code

basically this actually started in 1994 so the board had donated part of their salary for that so they're going to be actually those scholarships and then the guidance counselors go ahead and put that out to the seniors they complete them and then the board actually gets together and they will choose the recipient of those applications and we'll take that out of your check like the last couple of months or the last month or the last couple of days I should say that this year so your pages cut cut everyone in favor continuing that so yes sorry everyone in favor thank you number seven employment donation from Box Tops for education for students at Southwood Elementary we'll need a motion to approve of those donations sure all in favor students spotlight Micah and Caitlin it does he's a little disappointed that's not what I mean it's not okay I just noticed that right now you know I thought that's yeah yeah we'll get that changed I just went with it the bear will just put it up here now you only see it are you sure you won don't tell us yeah foreign so we wanted to uh it was a great honor um for uh the students and actually the parents too and everyone involved to for two of these recognitions and so really thought it would be great for them to come in um spelling incorrectly different things like that but uh there was a couple things I wanted to ask of them so they can share a little bit about their journey and can they see that can they see them or not okay so sorry Malachi if you could come up here it almost almost a seated right there but just so we can see you on the on the video for Facebook live um just stand right next to the doctor the mailing is what Millions well one thing that I talked to you about and I mentioned in my email just to share a little bit about um you know your journey as far as what do the schools or other experience really help you to be able to find out and actually be able to get this scholarship the Ford family community scholarship uh yeah for for the schools um just the a teacher's willingness to always be there like when I'm there and I don't not have a great day there you couldn't I could never tell when teachers maybe we're having a great day they're always really supportive um encourage me to want to learn and other experiences my parents I feel like if all a lot of the kids have the same support system that my parents did and still the discipline and stuff that I have a lot of people would be a successful and if they were in the same position I am also wanted to say something about my youth program I think it's helped me grow as a person in general okay very good it's always good to hear from students we don't get to hear it a lot so that's great um and then just tell us a little bit about uh your future plans I know some things might be still up in the air but um your ultimate goal well I'm still waiting to hear back from Purdue that's supposed to be this Friday and but I haven't decided between Purdue or Rose Homeland I'm wanting to study mechanical engineering at either one of the schools okay that's all right any questions from the board I didn't tell them about there might be other questions but did I read where you developed interest in the engineering from the stem yeah Junior High the fourth through sixth grade stem class that was what really blossomed great and this is a four-year tuition 30 paid correct so that's fantastic so I'll make your brother every scholarship wearing this new cars all right let's get him around [Applause] thank you all right and then also the little endowment Community scholarship Caitlin rank you want to go ahead and um it was really great uh that we have two of our MSD students that have accomplished this goal um so Caitlin just tell us a little bit too about those experiences whether School outside of school that really helped you uh that you can believe that helped you receive the Lily oh well since I was little my parents pushed me to do really well in school whether I hated it or not yeah I really didn't like it then but now I'm really I'm really happy that they did and of them doing poorly that reflects that on them and on me so I'm glad they always pushed me and now it reflects well in our schools and as I swallow my church or it's like well my family um we had some people at our church that actually helped me women Lily and I know they were really proud um and they were a huge help just everybody in our community would treat me and helped me to get back my school's different different teachers have always helped me when I'm having a bad day I have an American stuff okay so yeah it's a whole Community effort to get one person a forward scholarship and it reflects on all of them tell us a little bit though right before the meeting we were talking to you a little bit but you said you actually thought about the Lily how long ago that awesome it's fourth grade what is the scholarships in fourth grade you could ask Mom some of my friends they're like oh wow yeah all right uh tell us a little bit about your future plans then um I want to go to Iowa but like I said I'm waiting on an answer from Purdue just to see what happens but I'd like to go to Indiana Wesleyan for nursing well again congratulations and we will continue to talk to both of you you still have another semester of regular high school so make sure you keep working hard so let's give her a ride because I do believe that you have to have a diploma to be able to go to college so yeah so it's not over with yeah keep working hard I might mentioned that those scholarships I don't know so much about the Ford that about the Lily it's a lot of service goes into that if you've contributed to it continue all the stuff like that so thank you guys it's interesting they're going to keep track of her on the lily not necessarily the four but on the Lily we keep track cover for the next 10 years just to see what her progress is what she's a team so not just your parents other people too A lot of people keep an eyes on you well we have a couple other recognitions if you guys could stay for that just to hear some other things and I know that you guys are you still need to need to leave against Micah is covering Millie's Transportation okay all right okay but you can leave at any time we're gonna do some other recognitions at this time please all right and I will go ahead and have let's go ahead and have Mr Stauffer go ahead and share a little bit about some of the Southwood Elementary so I share with you guys usually on every Friday we have a nice uh newsletter for the elementary called the Knight's Tale and we highlight um all kinds of information throughout the week coming up but we also highlight um one boy and one girl from each grade level uh called nights of the week so this week's the teachers select those students uh each grade level gets together and they select their students that they want and then the reason why in the newsletter and I I put that on the spreadsheet I think they have access to it where they could see the reason why is but the students of the week for the nights um this week were Max stance my Shoemaker Raymond sessoms and Melina Wilson Callan Reed Avery Cordell Andrew werling Mary Smith writer Shannon Cali Ellis Nick O'Brien and Natalie heilman Dominic Kane and our last fifth grader was destined Banks so those students uh been doing this not saying things with the school and there's all different kinds of reasons they get selected by their teachers um like I said you can go by anyone still read out read off everybody's thing we did want to recognize one staff member at the elementary uh we'd like to recognize Mrs Megan Wright for her excellent work at SCS I don't know if you guys ever or not right foreign consistently goes above and beyond to create a supportive and nursing environment for students her dedication to our special education program and commitment for helping students succeed is unmatched and is very inspiring she she is there all the time and she works with our staff um I mean I can't even tell you how hard she works she puts in the hours and she's and she means it and she wants to see her students succeed so we just want to give her some recognition for all that she does because we do appreciate her hard work and her dedication to our students and our staff because she helps understand with those students quite a bit thank you all right Mrs Moore you have some things to share sure I do um I know if you've heard that um all kinds of variations um I'm just gonna go with ickiness um but we have some amazing Subs that we can get a hold of first thing in the morning and we say you know I've got a staff member that can't come today because they're sick I'll be there and it's just amazing that we have you know people in our community that want to come in to be successfulness and I hope I'm not forgetting anyone but Kim truska Kathy Lowry Nancy Joe Hamel Angie bear James Ely Jennifer nestler Katie Johnson and Marty Walker um are just amazing individuals that will get right in there and don't hesitate when they're available to say yes um we also are welcoming two student teachers this semester to Metro Moore James Ely so we're losing him as a sub but gaining him as a teacher he is completing his masters of Art in teaching through WGU and we'll work with Amy Sterling and we also have um Miss Renee soul and she's working on her bachelor's degree in elementary education and special education and she is working through Huntington University and she's working alongside Mary Donaldson and Bailey strong so we're excited to have them join us and welcome them into our amazing people just as a side note for the district or registration is now open and live and we're just getting kids after kids for our minds in action programming as of tonight we have 72 K to eight students registered for those three different experiences so um there's laureline Bartle has put together on our website just a wealth of information to make that process easy for parents to get their kids signed up and we are extending that invitation to kids in our community as well so um you very much and I will go ahead and share what the other principals have shared on our spreadsheet and actually Mr Stauffer just to let you know that the board does not have necessarily that because we typically just read them and then we actually keep it anyway so I just want to make sure I clarify that so I will start I will stop with Mr McDaniel the boys basketball team receive an exemplary behavior report from referee Scott Geist after the performance of the basketball game versus Manchester on Friday just on December 16th the report reads the game was fun referee as both coaches were a professional on a sideline of teams although Rivals were competitors throughout but not overly physical opposing players would help athletes up after a fall and captains were respectful when asking for clarification on calls they did not understand all of the referee Team all of the referee teams appreciative um also the Southwood Community would like to recognize the momentous accomplishment of Caitlin Rank and I'll read this um even though we've already done that uh this year's recipient of the Lily endowment scholarship Miss rank is an excellent student athlete and athlete and represents South Loop very well we have no doubt that she will continue to Excel and be successful in whatever path she chooses in her future foreign [Music] um in order to read these recommendations to allow Staffing parents to make an educated decision regarding their home health for their children okay are there any public comments [Music] all right any public comments no public comments all right anybody have any Communications all right uh the consent agenda may have a motion to approve the consent agenda you all have the executive session unions there you want to read this first foreign [Music] anyone like to discuss anything there we go right off David aye um [Music] okay uh it's a report so uh the first thing uh I know Carolina Student representative has prepared something for us tonight so let's go first hello everybody um there hasn't been much going on since we had winter break after our last meeting but there are some interesting things happening in the next few weeks at the hotel I would like to share um one thing I'm super excited about is our first musical in as far as I know at least six years um so they have their auditions today and I think they went really well um I decided to finally see the stage our amazing tiles be put to use um another thing is that there's going to be a winter ball for high school on February 4th and I'm glad to see more dances make up for the ones that had to be canceled due to covid um then the last thing is there's a club called Ace club which as far as the advisor of and they are doing this exciting thing where they're having open tutoring sessions for middle schoolers and some underclassmen high school subjects and I think this is a great opportunity for students to get some help from a more relaxed environment and get other people's perspectives on how to help them succeed in their studies and I've also heard some people say that they appreciate the email superintendent Costello has been putting out about snow days so I just want to say thank you and I'm excited about all these new opportunities um it's Charlie Brown you're a good man Charlie Brown um yeah and I went pretty well it's a lot of middle schoolers auditioning mostly um but there's a pretty good turnout I think there was like 20 30 people there for auditions today so pretty good that's amazing is it I think it's it's over Easter break so I think it's April 7th May or I think it's a Friday and Saturday before Easter um yeah anybody else have anything all right thank you very much so we have a we have an item to vote on for a overnight field trip um is there any is anyone here to discuss that from the students [Music] no they're not they're not here they're not here no I I do have I have a little thing yeah well we can send it to the Lord right here um we'll see all right uh cool all right so the next item is what we talked about in December changing the meeting date uh when we left in December I said I talked with Carol about just the possibility of doing that right now so the thing with that is there's five months left in this category after tonight there's the six committee members there's I think I counted 11 or 12 additional people who are required to meet these names from time to time it will be Christy including Sebastian right all right who all made you know plan their their weeks and their months to change it for the next five months right now is going to be tough It's Gonna it's gonna impact a lot of people not just the people that come to the meetings but everything those people have set up in their schedules to help support them to get to meetings on Tuesday like I know for me personally I'm here on Tuesdays so anything that happens with the kids or life has a work thing or anything like that that can't happen on Tuesday so she has to work on that I'm sure everybody has something like that going on it would just be incredibly tough to change it right now but that doesn't mean that when we wrote on the next calendar which I believe we will be doing in March we'll be working on that probably sometime around that the spring for next year no reason we can't talk about changing the data then changing the time I wouldn't be against starting earlier because of what is the school business hours the days sometime between three and four hey I'm not opposed to having an earlier start time just to accommodate you folks who are actually employees waiting around three to four hours after your work day ends to then attend another two three four hour meeting that makes for a pretty long work day I get it so I'm not opposed to doing that when we come one of the time comes to scanning that personally I think and talk with Carol and uh I talk with words in that issues so this at the beginning but Lori's not here in time she had some things going on some deaths and personal issues in her family so uh if you guys could remember her tonight whatever it is that you choose to do in those situations if you if you want to do that there that's why Laura's not here but I did talk to her earlier the other days available in the week right now basically Wednesday or Thursday which is absolutely impossible for her so to vote to change a day to fix one issue I think it's just gonna create too many more issues so that being said no reason it can't be changed for next year that gives everybody a whole year in advance to the plan to rearrange the next year's schedules around that so if you guys have anything to say you know feel free to say something foreign for a very specific reason that cannot be changed my schedule yes I everybody has something like I was telling I didn't when we started here I had to come up today that made it pretty tough to get here there's a couple dozen people directly involved in being I mean how many people are at the table right now and we don't have uh we want all we don't have right so there's a couple of factors beyond that you know a couple dozen probably somewhere around 50 people that would be directly impacted Oz mentioned the meetings with other groups in town other committees especially the budget work that's going on I know next week There's a Wednesday and Thursday meetings for you know the budget and stuff but next year you know I'm not committed to Tuesdays upon the fact that my calendar right now is currently scheduled that's it so the only thing I would say is I get February we've already got a budget with seven Stone and that's a pretty we've got a robot schedule in February but I I'm kind of like Julie and again I think we're both very fortunate in that our lifestyles afford US the ability to do that and so I would be fine with the changing date mid-year but again I can't speak for all these people and I don't want to attempt to so I can see both sides of the situation and it's just a tough situation so yeah I mean it is tough while we've done stuff out of at least three people on the Canadian market and other ways to sort of help you out so if you want to take advantage of that please do um so it could be poll everybody for next year for the next year's calendar I guess like for this year I know in March I've got a few things scheduled for work around these days um April my wife has a few things scheduled well I guess travel you're right yeah yeah I do traffic work quite a bit yeah uh that's just me that those are the other couple dozen people and we've got 14 15 people just in the room now it's tough again things come up like I said I had to open them up today I don't know what to say yeah I think the other huge point of contention which I since last week was Laurie said Thursday no way and Jeff said Wednesday no way so that would be zero important not impossible but I certainly wouldn't be able to do this yeah yeah and then it's just too yeah so understandable I think when we get to Mexico and we can project it out for you absolutely you know I don't know how many people have too many things Beyond a year I mean [Music] sorry when's our last meeting do we know what so we've got I know we got the two in February blunt April we probably only have one and then I think May yeah this year but we have the evaluation the evaluation yeah uh the dates around the town meetings are always flexible because we really need to do something right when the budget this year we'll probably pull that yeah the town meeting will be on Monday so we'll probably need yeah so things like that so it'll probably be like it's probably like six more right two three four five six or seven tops so I know that this is good six scheduled right February is two week two in February we've got one every other month yeah but like last year we negotiated great for the summer [Music] so she's I think we did some Zoom Zoom here uh yeah so that's what happened appreciate you talking to everyone um just add that you know when it came up in August the thinking was similar like we talked to change this next month before so if the school Community does intend to make a shift to try to make accommodations for more people um let's not wait till spring to start talking about it because we're going to be the same position as we are now yeah well I mean wait till next year Christy when is that meeting is going to take place for the set the calendars um the school calendar is March calendar isn't usually on Sunday a little early you can change at any point yeah all right uh yeah I mean you know February is a lot going on the budget s uh okay uh some Community reports Megan um so I don't want to step on Nancy's toes because I know she's going to be going into uh but we've been working on two things at our subcommitting meetings and number one is the upcoming budget so this past meeting we just looked at the timeline and again I'm sure she's going to discuss it because it was in the drive and pretty much the gist of it is when we plan to reach with the different town groups um one thing I wanted to bring up to the school committee is we talked about how important it is to have spoken Presence at these meetings so Julie and I are you know trying to tackle oils in Berlin but obviously like you know and Jess and Bob and I know like um it's tough but Carol had a great idea of you know trying to get out in front of the community as much as possible coffee talks um you know just try and get in front of different groups and it would be really beneficial if School community members could attend so I am happy to take on a good chunk of oils and stuff because I'm older thick and plus the schedule that's where Laurie is going to feel the same way Jess I know you're working but I think the big thing is getting the schedule out in front of the school committee members and seeing just we want to educate the population on the budget and the second thing that we have been working on slowly is cell service for this building so right now we're trying to reach out to somebody that had tried to do it in the past and get an update on that but I just want to let the public know if anyone listening is on our radar and is being discussed and we're we're trying to see what we can do but as of right now I think this was mentioned before the best way to get cell reception in this building without violating any laws would be against a cell power in the nearby vicinity the safety of cell towers has been brought up uh not with our committee but that would obviously be something that we would have to look into and it essentially is going to come down to the town's decision is what I think or whoever owns the land at the end of the day it's not going to be so I think that happening should be explored yes and that is absolutely something I just didn't want to yeah yep look me into it definitely I think it'll be good I don't think so right I know I just wanted to add on to what you're saying means we were working on that schedule for the days of communities pto's CPAC student accounts both school counselors and so on we'll have that calendar too probably at the end of this week to Coffee chats out for that we also um foreign [Music] amazing yeah Thursday you have they have Berlin on Thursday Nancy you're gonna go over the schedule yeah I'll go I have it all right um cool all right so that's good for Megan um Lori's not here so we're not gonna do uh number two we haven't had babies yet but at the top call and uh Carol about their availability three people please all right yeah excuse me um all right uh Caroline I wanted to let everybody know about the interview process we saw the newsletter this week we're launching at those interviews were starting with surveys we'll have a survey coming out for the Tomato principle was coming Friday and we'll soon be collecting we put out information about um we wanted to serve our new treatment communities trying to seek representatives from all different facets of the community and we'll be asking soon for for volunteers for that we want to make sure Folks at the dates ahead of time that there's really need that commitment of all of those things that we've been volunteered to do this year we want to make this very comprehensive um John Campbell is really working with me she'll be having possibly coordinating the interviews themselves which primarily will be taking place here and so to keep an eye out to this group reports describing to do the survey for Wilson so you have to be scheduled everything happening as far as we interviews we'll be bringing those final candidates so that staff who are not serving on the Committees will have a transparents also will have a chance to meet the candidates to talk candidates and students as well because we'd love to hear from you so I will be involved on that level with communities how many candidates do you expect to make it to that that point now typically two or three yeah I'm hoping to put the rules we're starting early enough I think that we'll be able to get this is usually the time of the year when folks start thinking about applying for different positions so I think we're going to be right in the prime of that time so what you doing I also okay student selected for that you know humans parents will get involved primarily through the boards for example representatives from the future [Music] so we also have um teachers participate [Music] I'm not sure about that um [Music] I do want to also mention to you that the job description should be voting out tonight but a few changes in that probably would be the most significant one is the principles um job description the change in it is that removing those positions to the full-time whole year they typically in chapter 20 or 24 25 days we felt that since the principles are here quite a bit during the summer want to have that and they'll take the same vacation times of you know what you have available the same number of days will be increased slightly um traditional days but we feel that we need to have principles here whether with someone as much as possible for the rest of the news so that's that's probably the biggest change followed by John Campbell's position when we're having this type of piece available to you so his is the same principal position for validation foreign [Music] sorry I just have a question so for like the interviewing committee you were planning on having a student representative student council at the parent and then volunteers from this Council or what exactly exactly would be on this committee are you looking for the Tejano principle or specifically um it doesn't matter I'm just wondering like for the interview process who's going to be on each committee like sure well we have a whole list of those Representatives I can tell you that it's a hunter principle we have the condo PTO rep school council rep CPAC rep school committee members special education specialist rep and middle school team leaders high school department chair athletic department Graphics okay thank you and then when the the final candidates for representative for example students thank you we'd love to have everyone who wants to get involved with us that's pretty big already it's a lot of us we were trying to automatically bring it down but also offer other hospitals [Music] you need to be available for the dates though I think that's an important thing so that will definitely meet up the people literally well I have one employee I want boys versus I really am invested in this because it's it's like four I know it's like four to six two hour sessions within a couple weeks fans and that's what we want to do with that yeah [Music] resumes for the individuals and just planning for the process that's how deep okay good uh next up is director finance and operations Nancy budget issues hey so the first thing I'd like to start with is our Surplus disposal request so in the school committee folder you'll find a surplus disposal request form for math books and math you know the textbooks for grades six seven and eight and they come to a value of 993 three dollars these materials are no longer needed by the school since these textbooks have worked with books range from 6 to 19 years old so we would like to have permission from the committee to dispose of them through waste removal yeah you may be seeing more of this um just a couple years ago we would like the opportunity to share them with their school districts but due to that number you want them too old so just for the old school books are you planning on selling them or recycled these would be recycled they're just so we wouldn't get the 9 000 dollars back that is correct okay yes that's correct yeah the worthless because there's no thing we did some research around here we did that's a research oh that's fair market value yeah true you know I'm on a list serve with the other District Director of Finance in they're all trying to get rid of it so no one wants to buy it nobody wants to buy it all right other countries you know so it's funny you say that I have a friend who actually works with a school in a different country but then the shipping because remember um so you said there's a lot more items around that would free up space for teaching classes um you know would there be a website of maybe a simple page we're going to throw this away you know and just keeping all this stuff on there as you clean out the closet cleaning out a closet page on our pbrsd website more worth it more than it's worth I I we discussed this I just listened to the principles and this is also came up with an idea that they've done in another District that she had been in and I I liked this too and if knowing how much we have to get rid of um I just wanted if you want to share that yeah no I don't mind um it's just the idea that um in the winter we pay our custodians to be in the building on Saturdays um and so if we could maximize that by having um going through and having the Surplus items out on cap for Bes I would say out on cafeteria tables um and we just have the items that we said from um nine to 11 or whatever these hours you can come in and go through but by the ends we're going to recycle the items I think part of our hesitation is that some of the items are no longer valid in their research and how we teach kids and so that is something that we need to consider but certainly that is a way for us to maximize a dollar we have we're paying somebody already to be there because I know we're trying to remove best intentions aside we don't want to add more burden to the process right before any more happy to look into something for this and some of this may be more relevant to some materials may be more relevant to have a small you know that their new work I have seen it prior plays dying where you just post it on the website or books if you want to come on the room it could be good workbooks for the kids to work over the summer give the parents a week to come in and have an open table I've seen it done a lot more during the summer time um but that's and then if that doesn't work I mean after going through the tour and not I don't think Berlin was as bad but I do some of those classes were crazy in Maryland Bes was like there is so much stuff almost like overwhelming I mean there's a science lab that's just full of stuff so um yeah I I think it's a need and I don't think we should put too much effort into like if you want to do a web page or I like that idea I think get rid of it you've got it because as we grow we're going to need that space and if it's not cleaned out like oh we can't accommodate each other class or you know then that's going to create more so I like that you guys are taking the initiative on that I say I'm a big Urban I know yeah I wish there was a cheaper way to recycle um but okay so in your packet you'll find an updated physical gear timeline these changes that have been made are highlighted there are three of them the first is the meeting that we are having Capital committee that is on Thursday January 12th to be able to be reviewing the fiscal year 24 capital budget request this is an in-person meeting at the Town Hall at 5 PM in route room 226.

uh okay all right uh welcome to tonight's meeting and call daughter for um January 10 2023. so I want to let everybody know my voice is a little bit worse because I had a basketball game like yeah so I'm not sick at all if I was I'd wear a mask but I just want to learn but I feel great anyways okay so tonight uh Simone and Bell are here and you'll lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance thank you foreign was nice enough to um postpone the election of officers from the last meeting so that's what we're going to do now so I'll open this up to the board so what we learned at Cave was paper ballots we can have paper ballots but you need to sign them and then we have to read them into the into the minutes anyway uh we have to do that um locally so we can do that and that has been the tradition um but we I don't think we've ever read them out loud or reading them into the record we did avoid that step if you'd like without writing the paper ballots and just nominate and uh and handbook all votes have to be in public that's why there's no such thing as a secret battle or a secret book so we're just correcting that I'm not um trying to change the process and we just learned that it came so and by the way the executive session we can have we always can never have a vote so every vote has to be in public so how would you like to proceed we have paper ballots if you'd like to do it you can sign your name to it and then it can be read into the uh the record or we could just uh we can just um kind of cut to cut it quick cut to the chase if you will and just go to nominations for a second and vote how would you like to proceed does not matter to me yeah I mean quite frankly it has to be so what we would do is you would sign a piece of paper and then Claudia would read out the vote with the name anyway so there's no anonymity if you would in the vote foreign I would recommend we just go to nominations and hand votes but that's why I wanted to ask you what you wanted to do online they can vote it's legal they would have to do it by handbook yeah and state who they voted yeah they would they would certainly avoid the paper any any preference if not I'm going to suggest that we just vote okay all right then I would pass the gavel to boost your case who will um we'll start a song thank you very much um chair Daniels um this is the only meeting of the Year where I get the gavel for a couple minutes um just to remind everybody that uh by law number 9110 of the Canton Public Schools uh Board of Education indicates that all officers of the board shall hold an office for a term of one year and until their successes are elected elected and have qualified um section 9120 indicates that the officers of the board shall be the chair the vice chair and the secretary who shall be elected annually by the board at its regular meeting in December at our regular meeting in December uh the board voted to um to dispense with that bylaw until or I should say through January 31st which brings us to tonight which allows us to have the election of officers tonight uh my job is to call for nominations for the chair and once a chair is elected the gavel will be turned over to that person so um are there any questions before I open nominations for a chair any questions about the election process okay so I'd like to um have a motion to open nominations for chair if someone could support that motion okay Cindy thank you well thank you for your second okay so the floor is now open for nominations for chair Felicia thank you very much Felicia we know we um abalu uh Daniels being nominated Cindy I am Natalie Davis thank you are there any other nominations before we vote on of the one nomination we have I just want to say I think Liz has been doing a great job thank you so I nominated too if I can okay last call for any other nominations okay then we will now um have a vote all those in favor of Lou Daniels being chair nope things raise your hand s if I believe I don't see Russell I believe it's your name okay there we go Claudia you all set with that bro congratulations Lou thank you thank you thank you thank you you guys I I appreciate it I hope to make it better I know last year maybe there was some rugs and trip ups but uh I'm committed to making it better my my goal is always to make it better for the kids so thank you thank you guys online well Lou you're just so damn handsome you know what do you want to say today it's a great hair right Silver Fox silver fox okay if I could have uh so now we'll go to a vice chair I'll open up the floor for nominations for vice chair um so I just want to say something about you sure absolutely um I okay listen to me real quick I came to the board to you know work together and be Collective and I just wanted to say I feel like we can do a better job together being more cohesive and more Collective not as divided and with that being said I would like to nominate Joe scheiber for the vice chairman thank you do I have a second Joe three seconds but thank you we'll take care thank you any discussion any further discussion and all those in favor of Joe shoulder be your Vice chair raise your hand thank you thank you Vince and I hope now I know thank you very much thank you Felicia and thank you Joe okay Joe thank you for voting for yourself congratulations to tell my wife um Felicia I just want to thank you because um right after being newly elected to the board you were willing to take on the vice chair position and it really has been a pleasure for me to work with you in that role and to be able to bounce ideas off of you well thank you for your year of service yeah thank you I mean as Vice and I'm glad you're continuing um and I really appreciated you stepping in when Lou was not here on December you did a fabulous job so okay um so I look forward to our continued work together and we'll miss you in our leadership welcome to Joe to be part anyway so thank you thank you okay and now uh the final uh the final position is board secretary and uh came in by May nominate you again um you've been so great to do that and keeping all the executive session everything came out the notes and things so I'd like to nominate you again if we could yes thank you okay the easiest of the uh officers can I have a second please really a good hearing none all those in favor hi to Brian thank you Joe nine nothing okay thank you Kim so Kim is now elected as our uh secretary so I I really feel that 2023 is going to be great and this is a great board and we have some uh some wonderful things ahead so okay all right let's get to the business of the board and um student report please okay so good evening today oh oh sorry this is pass I'm sorry yeah senior Pope good evening Madam president Dr lareya and fellow board members happy board appreciation month to start out my name is Anne Hart and I am one of the instructional coaches at Adams City Middle School tonight I'm here to talk about the professional development day that teachers and staff engaged in last Tuesday and highlight some of the things that we have seen both in classrooms and in this school to highlight the learning that teachers engaged in the morning session of the PD for teachers focused on monitoring in the classroom and creating Pathways during instruction to ensure that our teachers are actively up looking and assessing both how students are doing and what they are doing in the classrooms so far in classes we have been able to see teachers begin to develop their monitoring tools for example a seventh grade teacher is using a plus checked and minus key to quickly identify students who are understanding those who might need a little bit more help and those who are not understanding the content yet one of our science teachers is pulling the icann statement and the ican levels from the curriculum and using it to identify the level his students are currently performing at and forming intentional small groups from that data that they are pulling we have also seen more teachers up and around in their classrooms taking a more intentional active approach to monitoring what their students are truly understanding in that afternoon session at Adams City Middle School we focused on backwards planning and intentional questioning during lessons we LED teachers through thinking about pulling out High leverage activities and questions that will help students become proficient on exit tickets and unit assessments so far as a coach I have seen teachers become more thoughtful in their planning working to plan backwards from the assessment or that exit ticket and picking questions and activities that truly help students Master their content I want to conclude with some thoughts from a couple of our teachers personally our sixth grade math teacher states that the professional development helped me be more intentional in my planning I've been able to really look into the curriculum to pull out problems that get kids to practice and collaborate as a result I've already seen Improvement in my students scores on the exit tickets in that active monitoring has also made me better at adjusting my teachings in the moment rather than after my students have left my classroom a seventh grade teacher stated that he appreciated the monitoring PD because no matter the content we teach the grade we teach or the level of experience we have every teacher could walk out of PD with a couple strategies that we could immediately Implement to help our students so to conclude I want to thank you for continuing to support the learning of our Adams 14 staff as it is critical to our Student Success thank you so much for that great update um do you board members do you have any comments or questions I know it's kind of odd because it's public comment but um okay I think it was very helpful to hear the update um I've I think it would be great if we hear a more formal um update on the learnings um because from what I've heard from teachers this last round was very different than previous and then I think it speaks towards our partnership with tntp and just the impact that the changes that you were implementing are making oh we have one more okay thank you um Kristen Gilmore Kearney Middle School teacher hi welcome hi hi um good evening board members glad to be here and Dr earlier good good evening um I'm Kristen Gilmore I'm a proud teacher at Kearney Middle School I've been there for 11 years um yeah love to make it a career here our full career in Kearney um I also want to mention that in regards to professional development I have also served as a physical education department lead for about nine maybe 10 years and within since the pandemic um basically for the past two years this has been the first time where the content leaders for for physical education music art the specials and electives I would say for these two years it's been the first time where we actually feel like we're a part of the planning within the district because I could say that prior to the pandemic um the the specials and electives were kind of off to the side sadly and so it's nice that we're now collaborating collaboratively part of the discussion and the planning as a whole and something I do want to say is we as specials teachers I've I've heard from others um not just physical education but art music tech it is really nice to get with our content peers on these professional development days because if you think about it Elementary School specials teachers they don't have another content partner within their school they are the only art teacher the only music teacher PE teacher within their school so the only time they ever get to talk to their content peers is on a professional development day so it's been really beneficial to actually get together and talk about our content not just about best practices but how is it how do we take what Dr Lauria and the district is pushing down on us we then figure out how does it authentically fit into all of our our contents so I just want to I hope moving forward that the district and our our management organization continues to see value in electives and content electives and specials having that time together that's all I wanted to say to represent the specials and electives teachers thank you thank you so much [Applause] go right ahead uh Christy Douglas thank you so much yes thank you Maria and honorable board members my name is Christy Douglas and I serve Commerce City as a council person and uh I am here tonight in my own behalf and I wasn't going to speak tonight but because the board is being recognized I myself really recognize the phenomenal work that you have done and just how hard you have fought for the students in this community to recognize how valuable they are and to to to give them hope and purpose and and uh that needs to be recognized I also wanted to recognize board member Molina's absence she was asked to speak at as a panelist for a group of scientists that have come in from worldwide and to have her be asked to do that that's the only reason that she's missing tonight but she's doing the good work on the environmental level for this community and for her to have been asked to do that needs to be recognized so I wanted everybody to know why she was gone tonight but again thank you for all the hard work that you have done and your commitment and dedication to this community is um is very special and we appreciate it thank you thank you so much it's it's very um validating and and I think this is the best board we've ever had so thank you um next on the agenda is superintendent luria's updates um Dr Lydia just um like that one working yes it's working uh Madam president members of the board community members I have a few updates um today first of all I want to share that um we are very excited when I say we is not only me as a superintendent but also our cabinet our teachers our Educators um we have been analyzing data student data and now we have the beginning of the school year data student assessment data and middle of the school year student assessment data and we are seeing phenomenal growth in every grade level or most great levels we do have in kindergarten I mean in mathematics we have seen growth in the star from kindergarten through 12 in every grade level as a district and in language arts we saw growth in every great level except first grade we didn't see the growth we wanted to see 9th and 12th grade so we have been digging deep into deeper into the data meeting with principals on Monday we had principals coming here we spent about three hours looking at the data and we are creating alongside with the 90-day plans a very specific 12-week plans on how we're going to be addressing data how we're going to be monitoring the students just like it was mentioned you know from our speakers the monitoring and the expectation that we're going to be monitoring student is is is in each one of our roles right not only me as a superintendent but my my team tntp administrators and teachers our Focus us Educators is really looking at how students are responding to instruction and not so much on you know what the teacher may be saying or not this is this is about how the students respond and I just want to say how proud I am of our teachers and of our principals they have really um you know they they have committed to to that vision and um it's the evidence is showing that we are moving the needle by no means this is uh something that we feel satisfied of where we are we have a long way to go but the results from beginning to middle of the year are extremely extremely promising as an example this for kindergarten the acadians we had a huge growth in every single School Central Elementary in particular because I know that is one that is near to our heart and we're watching extremely closely um we had a growth from the fall proficiency level in acadians of our students of 40 14 percent three and a half months later in December we saw a growth in proficiency to 73 percent so we went from 14 to 73 percent and that is the result of hard work of our teachers of our administrators of a great huge collaboration between tntp and our team this is one group working for the students this for kindergarten ideal in Spanish 51 percent are at or above proficiency and just to mention again Central Elementary because I know you know we're paying close attention everybody's paying close attention to Central the ATL proficiency was eight percent in this um at the beginning of the school year and uh by December three and a half months later it was 40 percent um so incredible growth disregardly star literacy in Spanish 68 of our students um demonstrated a growth at or above typical so we are growing our students we are moving the needle and again it's all because of the hard work of our teachers um this year and you've heard from a teacher today and I am excited to um you know actually use her comment when she said that teachers are being part of planning uh one of the things that we experienced this this year in the in by the middle of the year was the the the smallest turnover of teachers that we have had in many years and that in my opinion is a result of acknowledging that our teachers are the Professionals in that we want to hear from them we are putting the expectations out very clearly and then we say how can we make it happen and what do you need and then quite frankly I move out of the way so we have areas of growth and our data we have clear instructional steps that we are taking um in in continue moving forward one of them was meeting with the principles and then to ensure that we continue monitoring closely to students so very excited about that data and um and another thing that I wanted to give you an update on well I don't know if there's any questions about that actually I I would just like to commend our our teachers um that's tremendous growth um I think my question would be um are we going to have a formal update on the big middle of the Earth assessment data okay great yes ma'am um any other okay um and then another update I wanted to provide to you is just you will recall in November and December I share with you the need to bring an emergency agenda item at some point to you um Adam City Middle School we started the school year with a a large number of vacancies teacher vacancies um and we working with labor and with the teachers there were doubling up of classrooms teachers were giving up their planning time incredible commitment from the staff in there to ensure that the students were having a certified teacher but that resulted also in large number of students sometimes in in the classrooms and as you will recall we started looking into Elevate K-12 which is a company that provides virtual learning or virtual instruction by highly qualified certified instructors that may not be here in Colorado but these are you know teachers in the United States that are highly qualified and certified and we have started in this um second semester with opportunities for students to go back to smaller classrooms a commitment that we had with the teachers in icr coach from acms you know not in one of the commitments was we we're not going to have large numbers of students the entire year we knew was something to ensure that our students were getting that instruction but we also know that that we could not sustain you know or expect teachers to sustain their level of energy in high high lesson delivery you know for for too long in under those conditions um so we have started with instructors we have coaches in every classroom that have been trained on how to facilitate and support the virtual instructor I have myself been there several times of starting classrooms the team is uh there on on a daily basis ensuring that it's going and it's happening and and one of the things that I want to say is um you know it or one of the challenges it is change for our students and and something that stuns me quite quite Frank because it's it's it has been a a difficult year for our students and that is what we do not want to have so we are already working hard in planning for next year to ensure that um this this or any other school will start the school year with the amount of vacancies that we that that we experienced this year so that is going well and I'm looking at the instructor also shaking our head we have I tell them give me uh you know daily updates of uh of how it's going so um you know I I want to acknowledge once again all the teachers and all the staff at Adam City Middle School and of course the students and for the resiliency and and the parents supporting because uh it's it's been it's not been an Easter Road for sure um in the last one about PD um or let me back off a little bit um any questions of course I do I feel like I'm always the one asking I'm sorry um I I um commend the staff and the teachers because I can't imagine the lift that this has been um I think one of my questions is have we looked into or offered any incentive pay um during this time and then my other question is have we looked at some type of um reward system for those students since this is such a different year um maybe if that's something that the board could support or especially like the board liaison Mr Amador um I just I know this has been out of the ordinary for everybody um so that that would be my only questions so I could answer that I know that they have a reward program for the kids that they're giving um like Adam City bucks um when they get to like affirmations at lunch that they do for the students um I know that they did we did do incentives for the teachers that were we bought all their time back for when they were working that to do the incentives for them they do have stuff for the kids the incentives for them I'm getting points to be able to do things they have a school dance next for this Friday uh this Friday I think from like 4 30 to something and all the kids it's free to go but it's for all the kids that if they haven't got any like in trouble or stuff like that I believe they all get to go um so they are incentivizing those kids and the classrooms um are smaller and they're more focused on the learning level of the kids in the classroom are all the same so you don't have those big gaps so most of the kids are on the same learning level of all the other kids in the classroom I know that from having the students there and then talking to some of the staff as well so yes and Not only was purchase time if they were giving up their planning time but also stipend for taking the added number of students um yeah I just wanted to get clarification on um how communication has gone to parents if there has been um concerns around that on how that's been handled um just overall yes um thank you for the question from Madam president um director strata members of the board there has been communication one of the things that I requested from the staff is to ensure that there is um there are different ways in which we can communicate with us with uh parents so uh several emails I um at some point I share that with um with the board if several emails where it was communicated uh feedback that we received and then I passed on to the staff is when there's a lot of information we need to chunk you know the information so so it's it's we cannot expect parents to sit down and read long emails right or or flyers or stuff like that so we receive that feedback um and I it was passed to to the staffs to the staff there was also there were also sessions with the students and the teachers had talking points and uh there were explanations in discussions with the students about you know the changes in in why so um so there were some concerns that were brought up by uh parents and I directly connected with those parents because I know this is as I said something that that is close to my heart it's it's um something that that we want to see in you know we're putting those structures in place that we do not you know go through something like this again but uh um yes and and also communication has been uh um or is scheduled to be sent on a weekly basis or at least the first few weeks to to give updates on how things are going I know I'm gonna look at the stuff to see if it has been sent yes sir thank you thank you any other questions or comments okay thank you Dr Lydia you had another yes the last one uh professional development um so Miss Sheila Burke if uh he's gonna come up here to share uh my apologies to share a little bit of the um data points of the professional developments um one of the things that I do want to um to share is last time when we had professional development we always survey teachers at the end right to give us their feedback in what we heard loud and clear is that they wanted more differentiation so we work on that piece um and there was differentiation we also heard from principles that they would like to have also some time with the teacher so um the morning was as a whole group including differentiation and then they were released to the schools to do their own their own work as well because all schools were different so miss Park thank you president Lovato distinguished members of the board superintendent Maria viewing audience thank you for your time tonight we have a district professional development day each quarter which is aligned to our academic Excellence playbook in that we have a scope and sequence across the district that we put together to be able to help align our work across through that there are specific areas that we focus on on February 3rd um excuse me January 3rd we focused on aggressively monitoring students which goes along around our Focus around professional learning communities or plcs so in that we're looking at as we're providing instruction around high quality tier one how are students responding to that how am I as an educator building in checks for understanding and how am I circulating the room to be able to check for individual student progress so I know how to respond to students whether they may have misconceptions whether they may have an opportunity to further their learning because they're understanding the concepts that are being taught which is where the differentiation for our students comes in in that we're aggressively monitoring for ambassadors which is one of the strategies that we're leveraging here in the district that you've often heard superintendent Lauria speaks to So within that we tied all of those pieces together and so from now until February when we come back for our next District PD day this is the area that we're going to look at specifically that ties into the professional learning communities and builds upon the high quality tier one lesson internalization that we've already been training our staff on in there at the end of each of our sessions we provide a survey to all of our session participants that includes both of our certified staff our classified staff and any of our one-off physicians whether it's electives RCT instructors Etc and in there we look at those data and the survey results to be able to help inform our upcoming professional development sessions which again is aligned with in our scope and sequence one of the comments that we had is that they felt like the time was useful some of the comments that we heard was that they could take the information within the sessions and implement it the very next day so they appreciated that there was time for staff to be able to plan in their sessions time for them to work with their principal and their school-based team and take the information that they were learning and apply it the very next day one of the areas that we still are continuing to work on that we often hear is differentiating for the vast Learners that we have in each of the session groups and so that's something as we move into February 13th District PD day that will continue to work on and then tailoring our needs to be able to meet our paraprofessional classified staff specifically both our instructional parents and our special education pairs are the two areas that we're working on we did have um 675 responses from our last survey which is a good sampling size and so we look through every one of those comments to be able to see what are we doing well that we want to replicate for the next and upcoming sessions and what are areas and opportunities that we want to grow in and get better that our staff said that just didn't resonate with them thank you any questions thank you so much for the update um I I think I heard you mention that they were differentiating between the staff and and asking um or seeking their input for the planning of the PD is that extend to I know we had heard from our um Liaisons our parent Liaisons are zero color ending and oh no okay you're good hello good evening uh this is Wayne at the yard a former member and chair of the energy commission for many years and a long time uh green architect uh who's been doing uh solar stuff for 45 years I want to First congratulate the city and the Senate its citizens for approving the climate millage having been pushing for more funding since well before we wrote the 2012 climate action plan it's great to see more adequate funding for this uh our most existential problem I totally endorse the proposed reduction a resolution on transparency which although always important becomes more so with the new Village funds and the ever increasing urgency of climate disruption especially with rapid growth often comes chaos that allows money to not be spent well transparent currency involves communication with the community I do not think that there is currently enough if you look at the city's web site many pages have information that is several several years old and out of state I'm also a bit concerned that the pros allotment of the first year funding spends too much on items that do little to reduce our emissions time is running out funding should go where it's going to re create the largest reductions enthusiastically endorse the proposed ban on the use of natural gas new construction as Ken Garber has shown any new hookups commit us to building commit buildings to Decades of increased emissions natural gas is a health hazard and the city should immediately Institute at least a temporary ban a new new natural gas installations until the items that cause the postponement of the ordinance be are flushed out I hate to say negative things about climate work at the city because it's probably the best in the state of and high up in the country however we are in a crisis and things have to move fast after reading the January OSI newsletter I find that it appears that little Improvement has literal little movement has happened on heard the energy home energy rating disclosure the green rental housing and uh the web portion of the energy concierge concierge program um when I was a member on the commission and for some time afterwards we had subcommittee 32nd Street projects um so um we need to move faster um I some of these appear to be stuck in in legal and I would uh suggest that Council needs to ask legal to move more quickly on these items um it's you're not we're not moving fast enough uh we need to do more thank you thank you um caller ending in one three four thank you Mr Lang and chair mursky it's Ken Garber 28 hammerhill Court um yeah I'm looking forward to tonight's discussions of the climate millage budget the transparency and accountability resolution and gas and new construction um a few comments on each uh like Mr Apple Yard I'm excited about the possibilities raised by the climate millage funding um however the slides show a large sum that could go to vppas or virtual power purchase agreements we should invest in new Renewables as soon as we can I'm very wary of vppas with these deals there is no physical transfer of electrons from generator to buyer rather the buyer in this case the city and its residents guarantees a price to the generator over a period of time in exchange for renewable energy certificates or wrecks so vpbas our electricity Futures swaps a kind of financial derivatives and almost all of them are done by for-profit companies I can only find one Municipal municipality that's executed one Arlington County Virginia um besides the complexity and Financial Risk with vppas we still pay for dirty DTE electricity and support its fossil fuel generation better to use those funds to finance local generation and Energy Efficiency reducing demand for DTE power um with the DTE landfill solar deal apparently dead at least for now let's instead gradually build it out under City ownership taking advantage of the Ira's 30 direct payment to cities um we can put in limited transmission to City facilities starting with a line to the wastewater treatment plant which uses almost 13 million kilowatt hours a year I think this is at least worth discussing um regarding the performance transparency resolution this is badly needed I just looked at the city's performance measures web page ask Mr Apple Yard just mentioned the most recent data for public services are from 2019.

oh that um lives or without all these particular one you know we have now some um actually made us a retreat and discuss what the needs are and what we want to establish the goals of the district and then the 80 Mastery and the 90 will become at this Regional identification [Music] starting to make changes and the leadership level through level and advanced level to try to promote results so it is trying to wait to roll this out so we want to begin working on anywhere and explanations yes [Music] foreign [Music] I guess that's what I'm trying I'm trying to say the 301 goals are specifically because you have to be made [Music] defines because if it is then I don't I don't want to see this way you kind of get left those energy show and grow because we're focusing on love opportunities is that the um the statue allowance of governing board to see that criteria and we will see the criteria of once again doing number three but nevertheless is um right now based on the scores that they have and I need his school to begin moving to the students forward and as they move forward um I can commit and guarantee that we'll move money to Liberty to ensure the work of all our students we can achieve over our team a little set so [Music] I feel like yeah I get it you know I was former student myself when we were ahead all you had to do was directly overall I think you're so far I feel like that's something else [Music] kind of achieving it's not just saying so that's where my that's something okay [Music] um I was just going to ask if um this um chart you have here at other schools uh going by that too yes um right now um back in December the principles uh assistant we met and we have we started the direction that we went ahead in the next few years and this is what we will be rolling out and we'll be rolling out if you hear more about this as well but this is this is what we could say president and that's all in the direction of anything yeah I like this because you thought the kids were here we want to go here you know and daily you know [Music] thank you goals and that's it and um [Music] sorry um everything several times I'll be more than happy to be here and if you don't mind uh on the plan posted I will direct you to page number five for the primary um first of all uh I want us to remember that in the primary election McDonald's and depending on the reason I was the way the points will be allocated it's going to be based on the professional as for the ELA goal um 90 to 100 of this show growth um they're going to be the teacher then are going to be taking the in depending on the growth is going to be the lesson um it is not only effectively if we hit um similarly when you go down for a preschool once again what I'm going to see is how they're located that we can go is and also demonstrate it based on the percentage of students the more students uh showing growth which is definitely 200 and the teachers will be operating 40 points for that particular goal regarding Kinder in third classroom teachers once again for ELA as you can see the the points the maximum board is going to be based on the maximum percentage growth um this is more um the general hair classroom and for the specialist on Intervention um the specializing diversity of teachers based on the the logs completed and submitted by the Specialists and internationalists that will also be getting the most points um based on the instruction that they provide and the standards and the educational to ensure that students are participating in engaging in the classrooms and it will be demonstrated also they attended based on their attendance and opportunity to participate in adolescence that's how they're going to get adults foreign [Music] and the last one is keeping parents informed all the growth what I like about these particular goal is not only that they're going to be meeting with the parents and also uh communicating with the growth for the students but they're also going to be documenting that deserve those conversations in our student integration program in our in in the program that we have for our students to collect all the information so that's part of the goal and at this point I'm going to start to see if I can answer any questions regarding their two white goals or individual classroom goals as well as the specialist and information come on I like unless the Titanic sorry I like that there's a school wide percentage films that the school-wide should say for instance of the Year legal goal that 90 to 100 percent was full will show growth in the reading fluency score so I like that [Music] um but how much has been a percentage [Music] so um those are so many things that stand up for me but I like that their expectations of the whole story is good but then again there's no personage on how much food taking his medicine that would that would be also Clarity if we go back to the other presentation page two um if you don't mind uh Mr Bates can you show once again uh slide number two from Mr polish presentation yeah as you can see not not only do we have um every single level but some of the clarity that you're going to be able to see that depending on what the students are now what we can establish what is the minimal expectation you're going to want to see moving forward um but that's going to be also called uh more the theory number three I'm sorry that I continued well go back to the retreat but I believe that there is going to bring a lot of clergy and as to what is expected what is expected and as in the next couple of years maybe you know where the students are and where do we want to get and if we don't mind these events we've been over to the 301 document and any other questions before we move on into our ID let's go okay I also I also wanted this uh point out that the um whereas that the primary campus teachers will have their uh who will enter the PRP content logs so let's not just there's actually going to be the communication then on those you know there's expectations and that communicating with your parents thank you I'm connecting with the famous it is going to be an important fact of the next few years in communicating the student from our side effect and we did not support and I say it is important to note we're still working with um with a secondary campus and the vote will be provided at another a little time that way we can talk about the one of those set for the I must look at school all right um the at this point I would like to bring everybody to be to the page um page 12.
