thank you Dr McCord I actually I'm just going to call for a motion and then we can discuss it still moved thank you Mrs Humphries it's been moved as their second oh second thank you Mrs page it's been moved and seconded that we review and approve the rules of order as shared tonight are there any is there any discussion was there anything that anybody would like to talk about or bring up these are all by Statute basically so I'm not sure how much we could we'll change on him I think there was some that we could amend if we wanted probably a man yeah right I think you have to have a some sort of Rules of Order right in order to operate and I think you can um dictate some of those things all right seeing no further discussion then I will call for a vote all those in favor of approving the rules of order has been presented tonight please vote by saying aye aye and any opposed with me thank you all that will take us to 3.03 board appointments to various committees Dr McCord thank you madam president governing board members I will list the Committees that are currently board approved committees and um and then the individuals that sit on those committees um first one is policy committee that is a committee of the whole so all five board members reside on that enrollment management committee that is a committee of the whole as well then number three legislative representative and an alternative representative for that number four is town of Gilbert liaison number five city of Mesa liaison number six Gilbert Education Foundation liaison seven Insurance trust representative and eight audit committee representative in the past um and you guys helped me out if I mess this up because everybody has changed sometimes so legislative representative this year was that was myself yourself and then the alternate was at Dr Santa Cruz yes okay town of Gilbert liaison was Dr Santa Cruz I believe city of Mesa was Jill Humphries yes Gilbert Education Foundation this year was Lori wood Insurance trust representative uh Sheila eugetti and audit committee was Mr Bill Parker so and there you have it uh Dr McCord could you just for clarification give a little bit of a description of each yes so uh policy committee meeting obviously is a committee that reviews policy we uh utilize that committee uh to its fullest potential when it comes to all of our policies usually they preview a policy and then they look at it for a second read efforts come to the board for the first read and then they send it back for a second read enrollment management committee this is a committee that exists we haven't utilized it in a few years but they look at things such as enrollment at each of our schools as well as boundaries and make recommendations to the governing board if there's any changes that need to happen there legislative representative this representative updates the governing board and attends any meetings related to that area for legislative information that impacts K-12 education or in particular Gilbert Public Schools town of Gilbert liaison is the person that as well as city of Mace liaison they relay information that comes back or it's a two-way communication basically what's going on in the school district with those officials from town or city of Gilbert and Mesa Gilbert Education Foundation that is the foundation that helps out in a lot of different ways to our students and staff for Gilbert public schools and that liaison sits on that board and again helps with the communication back and forth Insurance trust representative this person sits on our insurance trust board and they help bring recommendations back to the governing board as relates to Insurance trust or plan document changes as well as insurance rates for our employees and then the audit committee that is basically an oversight committee made up of individuals from our business department Ms Bonnie Betts is myself and what they do is they essentially go through a lot of the information that is presented here in the evenings as it relates to our finances for Gilbert Public Schools there are two um community members yes thank you Dr McCord so board members this is just we can go through and just what we've done in the past is just maybe see what committee you would like to be on and see if we can work amongst each other to decide what the assignment is this year so is there any anybody who has a strong feeling of what they would like to serve on and where they would like to be I'd be interested in serving on the legislative rip uh the legislative committee was okay that's fine you just need to be sure to attend the law conference um well the delegate assembly is the Saturday after the law conference that's not the only thing that no no but uh because we could change that as well that's what that's the way that you've done it which is is also the um annual conference that's our vote for the executive team of asba so those are two important things that um you do that has been done in the past we can adjust it if needed to so well I I would hope we would want to have our voice on those votes that to me that's important okay so I mean there's other things you can't do yeah so Chad would like to be on Mr Thompson would like to be on the legislative committee is there anybody else who like served on the legislative as a legislative representative sorry it's just the legislative I was hoping to throw my hat in the ring on that one too oh I was helping also to um because I think that's really an important one okay so I am interested in that okay well let's let's move from that and just see if there's anything else that people would like to do is there anybody who is hoping to be the town of Gilbert liaison I'm I'm interested in the Gilbert Education Foundation and the town or the town of Gilbert both of those second ones that I've done in the past but have not done recently okay thank you any others for town of Gilbert Gilbert or Mesa over okay audit sounds so exciting okay excellent put you down for those well I I don't also don't mind the audit committee yeah I don't know okay uh in Gilbert Education Foundation you said you'd be willing to yeah and I'm I would be willing to do any of those as well too so um Insurance trust is there anybody I would like to continue especially with the changes that we we approved in December okay with the new committee the additional committee okay that I'm going to be on excellent is there anybody else okay and then the audit committee is there maybe we should change the name of that hook people in a little bit it's the popcorn and ice cream committee wants to take the audit committee I'd be happy to do that are you ready okay okay so would you be willing Miss Humphries to yield the legislative to Mr Thompson or Mrs page that's fine I just would um like to be an alternative in case someone doesn't get to the law the delegate assembly or the um annual conference because I think our vote there is very important would that be satisfactory to you guys okay um so Mr Thompson or Mrs page was there would you either of you be willing to serve on a different one rather than the legislative representative absolutely same okay well we'll definitely put down Miss hemphries as the alternate then if that's okay with everybody okay we'll come back to that um town of Gilbert I had Mrs page or Miss Humphries um and then city of Mesa Mrs page Miss Humphries you did that I did that this past year so we would prefer a change okay um let's see and then the audit committee um Mr Thompson you're not interested in that huh okay one question already expressed yourself one question is how often does the audit committee meet quarterly quarterly quarterly unless there's something that requires us to meet Mrs wood I can be a team player I just don't feel that I would be the best choice for audit right no I appreciate it and learn yeah and get up to speed on that that's good I guess we also we want that and we also want something that you're interested in so um I won't be offended okay let's have let me just suggest this and then let's discuss how about that what if we have um what if we have Mrs page as the legislative representative Miss Humphries as the alternate what if we have um town of Gilbert let's see if we have Mrs Humphries that's fine or actually Mr Thompson how about would you be willing to be the liaison with the town of Gilbert and then let's we're going to discuss this this is just I'm just throwing this out here okay um and then city of Mesa um maybe I'll do the city of Mesa since I haven't written one down for myself yet and then Gilbert Education Foundation Miss Humphries would you I would be happy to do that okay I have a meeting on Thursday that's great okay he's so doing school connect now and I've been working for that for a long time okay perfect um Insurance trusts miss you jetty and then audit committee representative I'd be happy to do that or Mrs page or Miss Humphrey said she would too so miss Humphries what do we have we have you on Gilbert education I'm on the Gilbert Education Foundation Center just the alternative alternate for the legislative okay Mrs wood may I ask a question Mrs bentz yes yes that's Scott bence sorry um Mrs Betts questions you miss bets good morning it's all right she called you Miss Benson you didn't catch it and I apologize for that pardon me I just have a question for you if it doesn't sound like the audit committee is the most popular one I know I'm so disappointed and no one wants to hurt your feelings my question to you is with with the restructuring of what we're doing with the insurance trust would it be a conflict for me to volunteer for the audit committee so the um the plan would be to totally remove the employee benefit trust oversight of the investments from the audit committee now and make it a true audit committee so under those circumstances I do not believe it would be a conflict I I'm willing to do that as much as I don't like numbers they usually meet immediately or an hour after a policy meeting not every policy meeting but if no one else wants to do it I'll be glad to do it okay but if this is what I'm more than happy to take on two roles I mean I'll do the audit committee Bonnie's so amazing that I mean yeah yeah I'm I'm happy to take on two roles okay if nobody else wants to do the audit okay um okay so at this point right now I have Mrs page as legislative representative alternate Miss Humphries I have town of Gilbert Mr Thompson I have city of Mesa Mrs wood Gilbert Education Foundation Miss Humphries Insurance trust miss you jetty and the audit committee I have that could be Mrs page or Mr Jetty or Miss Humphries what would you if you're Amy I'm happy to do it I think it would be exciting actually so if you don't really aren't that enthusiastic or I think I would enjoy it it's up to you your pick yay or nay you in yeah I'll let you decide Miss Humphries there you go I'll take it it's only four times a year okay okay so let's see if this is is this okay with everybody Mr Thompson what's your thoughts the only the only change I would suggest is since uh miss Page has expressed a willingness to be a team player and to be on multiple committee or any one of these committees yeah that she uh serve on the as the town of Gilbert liaison and I am the legislative rep okay Mrs page how do you feel about that I really want to be the legislative rep but um I know the two new board members we're duking it out here we're just discussing no I know yeah um Mrs wood where where do we go from here I think either way it doesn't pre preclude you from doing things as you know what that's fine I'll do the town in Gilbert and um for this year you could think of it okay yep absolutely okay thank you thank you so now I have Mr Thompson as a legislative representative I have town of Gilbert Mrs page and typically there's a the town has on the Town Council will have a liaison that they designate as well so you're not required to go to those meetings or anything either typically you meet with the Town Council the person who is the liaison with that you start there and then just see how you can communicate okay so I've got Mrs page I I would like to say that I think all of these committees are important and you know the the relationships that we have with the town of Gilbert and the City of Mesa are are particularly important um obviously the audit committee is uh legislative yep yeah we appreciate everyone serving and doing what they can that's great so let me just say one more time and then we'll take a motion and then we'll vote on this so I have legislative or legislative rep Mr Thompson the alternate Mrs Humphries I have the town of Gilbert Mrs page I have the city of Mesa Mrs wood Gilbert Education Foundation Mrs Humphries the insurance trust MSU Jetty and the audit committee representative Miss hubris is that what everybody else saw I thought okay if that is okay so this is a one-year assignment as as of now it's a one-year assignment and again you can act as an individual board member and we can talk to each other about it and usually we report back to each other on all of it as well so um if if this is okay with everyone I would ask for a motion I move that we accept the committee members as presented by Mrs wood thank you Mr Jetty is our second second thank you Mrs page it's been moved and seconded that we accept the appointments to the committees as we discussed and resolved all those in favor please vote by saying aye aye any opposed with me thank you all we appreciate your your willingness to serve and and then you're working together to figure that out we will now adjourn our special organizational meeting and I will call to order the brief board business meeting and I will ask again Miss Wilson for a real call Mr Chad Thompson here Miss Rhonda page here Michigan here Miss Laurie wood here miss Jill Humphries here Madam president all board members are present you have a quora great I'm glad we're all still here that is good good work good work yes excellent all right that will take us to our brief board business meeting and board members just so you know typically like we said that's our the first meeting of the month we have a work study typically not a special board business meeting but we'll have a work study where the staff will present in-depth things that we've asked them to to bring to us and then after that we usually have this a brief board business meeting consisting typically of just a consent agenda to keep business moving along so this is typical of our first board business meeting a first meeting of the month so um so I will ask for an approval of the consent agenda item 6.01 I will ask for a motion I move that we approve the consent agenda items as presented thank you Miss C Jetty it's been moved is our second second thank you Miss Humphreys it's been moved oh yes sorry to interrupt yes is there a change at all to any of those work calendars before we move forward Mr McIntosh good evening yes there is one change the dean of students work calendar and the Thai calendar we moved the workday in the fall break and the spring break there was one day each of those um two we call it or breaks that we moved to starting their work calendar from July 12th to July 10th I believe so they start two days earlier in exchange for giving those groups of employees the full two weeks off instead of having to work one day that's the change so that has been changed from what was posted on the original agenda so I moved to to um prove it with the change that that Mr McIntosh just told us about the word calendars okay thank you Mr Jetty it's been moved is there second second thank you Miss Humphries so with that denoted change it's been moved and seconded that we approved the consent agenda items all those in favor please vote by saying aye aye and any that oppose with nay thank you that will now take us to the adjournment of our brief board business meeting all those in favor of us a journey I don't mean to prolong the meaning but thank you would you mind um Dr McCord just explaining how something gets on the consent agenda as opposed to being a separate motion generally things that are on consent agenda are uh business items that um our everyday type business items hiring resignations those types of things um action items generally are there for if there's discussion that needs to be had on or if a board member would like to have a discussion on it sometimes we'll put things on consent that someone says Hey we'd rather pull that off and have a discussion about that and that happens sometimes um for the action items there might be a presentation related to that um things of that nature usually bigger items may be more important at the time for board members to discuss if need be our goal is to inform you as much as possible so there always isn't a lot of discussion but before board meeting but that's what those items are there for thank you I think that's important and I also think it's important that we let our board members know like Dr McCourt said so you look through you can look through the consent agenda ahead of time if you have questions you can call anybody any Dr McCord or any of the assistant superintendents that you need to and then if you would like to discuss something on that then it's as we make a motion like 6.01 the approval of consent agenda items you would say I would like to move that we approve the consent agenda items except number 6.04 I would remove that and then we will approve the consent vote on it and then we will take 6.04 and then we could discuss it since it's been noted on our agenda we can discuss it just it's typical and the consent that we don't spend a lot of time discussing so hopefully we maybe should have explained that before we did that I didn't think about it till the end so thank you Mrs wood but if you ever have any thoughts or questions especially as we're just starting you know working through this process we welcome it thank you yeah okay so if there's no further discussion that will take us to the adjournment of the brief board business meeting okay all right um is there a motion that we adjourn my moves that we adjourn thank you Miss Humphries it's been moved as their second thank you Mr Thompson it's been moved and seconded that we adjourn I will call for the vote all those in favor of a journeying are brief board business meeting tonight please vote by saying aye aye and any opposed with name thank you all for being here we appreciate it thank you

that has never happened not even be close yeah you know we get all that data together and one question to you Keith you said something about the gym pouring the gym floor that we're getting whether that's conducive than pouring concrete right right and if not we it's going to take six months to cure it's a response right so did we expect the poor concrete during this time of the year anyway I mean yeah yeah I mean you don't want to bank on it but for the past three years I think they've been pouring you know into January what they've been putting like calcium in there and yeah they certainly do and then they put down blankets you know to keep the heat in okay so we were going to go forward with it anyway right regardless on how the weather was though the one thing that would stop you was you know frosting the ground and we're having our you know we have Secor our our testing company make sure that the ground is right to put the concrete in before they do it and right now they've given the green flag okay and you're not waiting on any Edison equipment no Transformers no actually yeah with that we're not there yet [Music] so Mr Brown there are specific guidelines seekers in the bid documents for cold weather concrete pour yeah so those are in their specifically like Keith had said that it's in Europe with blankets down or something like that those are all in there again and so is the testing of the frost line and so all of that is in the bid documents and covered because we were planning on okay all righty so the chiller says you alluded to already that's not going to be a problem but we're looking to have those chillers whatever we need right in a timely manner somewhat well we hope so are we looking still to use our temporary Chiller rooms separate area won't come out until the chillers are in so correct okay great I'm good thank you can the only question I have is there any way in February when we come to the committee of the whole can you give us a list of what is left on the 2013 sure what's left when you think you have approximate dates of when we're going to satisfy that list yep and then when will the 2023 State Life Safety list uh I honestly don't know that I'll talk to the architect and I'll get an answer for you by the community home meeting in February because I'm assuming with all five uh buildings we're working on we should satisfy most of that yeah I think most students going to be satisfied you know I mean I'm sorry what was the question Bill Winston I want to just want to make sure I want a list of what we have left on 2013 so we can get that clean and then for Life For Life Safety yeah and then what's the time frame on the 2023 list is because after five buildings are done we should be really close and then you're gonna only have uh technically money Elementary the high school the junior high yeah but those are minimum those are some real minimums there's always something that they'll find because codes are changing all the time so and that's how what Lifesaver is all about it's about meeting certain codes of codes have changed and everything and does they'll find some things but they have a slave from the 2013 one by the end of this song and the only wild card is do do they know that we are uh decommissioning the old MEC when we're done so they know because we have life safety issues about 600 000 there right so so what will happen on that if the building is not decommissioned at that point when they do the survey they're going to have to do the live survey on it and so then when you once you've decommission it you don't have but again you know they they've got to do it on there if it's still considered a commission building correct and I understand that but I want to make sure that when we get through the list that should be the only building left that has yes it should be outstanding issues I definitely and when you say decommission we cannot we can save this conversation yeah I understand yeah I definitely don't want to put six hundred thousand dollars into that nor do I and we yeah I use it especially since we got other um I guess my question is maybe I've missed this but have is there any update on the metal detectors um Mr Tobias has been reviewing it he is looking at some alternatives to the metal detectors he's going to be presenting that I think in our district safety team meeting I think coming up in February um so nothing uh really substantive at this point they're looking at some Alternatives instead of the metal detectors from his cursory overview is visiting other buildings other buildings had issues with those and so we were looking at perhaps some other options I think we need to revisit that real quick just the fact that it all it was very newsworthy yes things like that and I received a few calls on that same topic sorry I think we owe it to ourselves to kind of reel it back in because I know we've lost our person that was experiating that project for the most part okay yes and like I said uh Mr Tobias it has been going out and working at all angles to to deter can you give us an update next week yes we have uh I think he's been giving some updates in his FYI but I will add that to my list okay thank you I just I I have something oh excuse me go ahead okay um you may recall last year um with the sex education curriculum we had voted to opt out of that and now you guys probably saw the iasb call to action because the house is trying to pass house bill 5188 which would mandate the sex education and so school districts would not be able to opt out individuals would be able to they'd be able to opt out their students but the districts wouldn't and in Illinois a vast majority of the like a huge majority of the districts opted out so it's just baffling why our legislation sure would think that they should go ahead now and mandate it so if it concerns you um as it does me you can you know just contact your legislators who would be for us mostly in Crete and Monet the state senators Napoleon Harris Thaddeus Jones is the representative and then I think for up and universe uh University Park and Park Forest it's representative Deluca and Patrick Patrick Joyce is the senator so um it's just concerning to me I just don't know why they feel like they have to mandate that and give us more mandates take away local control I'm sorry Dr Holland Luca doesn't have but a but a very small portion of BP now oh okay I forget her name she's just gonna redistricted yeah okay well find um find the representatives there is a way to look it up online if you don't know who your representatives are and then you can contact them just wanted to bring that to everyone's attention are there any more board updates I know we had talked about given an update for our conference if we had trip y so we can do that next week okay when everybody is here okay all right all right um can you remind us in here I think I think all of us has some good things to say um all right well then I had just in my bun I just had one um this was just to get some you know direction from the board as you know our board policy allows each of our board members an allocation of about forty five hundred dollars to attend professional development and Associated expenses um I wanted to find out if so if we had a board member that had gone over that allotment do I have your permission to just take um and uh adjust that with the bigger pool of money just give them her some of my money let's see I've spent 89 of that yeah so I just want to make sure that that was fine all right that was all I wanted to know and we'll go ahead and make those adjustments thank you just put that person in front of the firing squad nope not at all so that's all I had thank you I think then you're still up okay so let's see what we have I have invited a couple people with us today um I'm invited uh see here uh Mr Derek Watson and Mr Eric green I'd like you to come up real quickly I wanted to have them share some really exciting things that are going on in the district especially with this idea of community mentoring we had started this program I think really last spring to really address um and help support our young men and I know Sandy Walters really was the spearhead in talking a lot to us about this and so we kind of started this and it has built up quite a bit of momentum and of course we have uh that is now um part of the jobs of these two gentlemen for the district they help spearhead many of the programs that we have here that are going on but we have one that's coming up um this Monday for Martin Luther King's birthday that we are putting on so I'm going to let them share this and certainly any of our male board members certainly are females as well if you are available to stop in there you're going to see a really fabulous event planned so Mr Watson would you like to share a little bit good evening everyone good evening like Dr Kerry cognally said we're really excited and a little nervous about this upcoming Monday it's the first time uh that we can say that's ever happened in this District where we have created conference where all the different communities are involved at the table is Crete Park fours Bondi and University Park and this is this is very special us so uh on that day we're gonna the conference will run from about 10 to 2 o'clock uh we're gonna provide breakfast and lunch for the kids we've opened the group from 8th grade to 12th um the young men are going to come in we're going to have some uh performances from different different members of the community that'll be doing spoken word uh we have some alumni that could be doing uh some spoken word performance that are actually uh uh Grammy nominated performers so uh from Mr Brown's uh daughter's Year from 1999 and you might want to come Mr Brown I think so right so uh there'll be three uh three uh groups uh one group we're going to talk about interaction with uh with of course law enforcement as well as uh dealing with adults you know dealing uh understand how to communicate and accept Authority we're gonna have another one that we're calling Guilty By Association and speaking with the kids about the impact of peer influence and and making sure you're choosing the right people to be around uh the last one which we're which we're very proud of is the entrepreneurial one we figured that the goal is we're going to talk about problems we need to offer Solutions so with our entrepreneur program we're going to talk about we're going to talk with the kids about how to start businesses some of the challenges of starting a business and of course answering those questions uh one of the beautiful things are we're going to have um a uh in the that's going to be open throughout the whole time is a uh uh we call it a business showcase and so what that is is giving the students the opportunity that right now we're accepting applications but giving them enough opportunity if they have a pop-up shop or if they have a business for them to Showcase what that business is so what students will be able to as well as the different communities we have uh the different park districts and also local alumni what if maybe they're offering scholarship opportunities or work opportunities or even mentoring opportunities they're going to be there as well uh to Showcase those uh so throughout the day in each panel it's going to be at least pretty much two or one not correct it'll be at least two alumni in the in each panel so basically uh so each room will have panelists but us as well we'll be going from room to room building relationships with the kids and also participate in the conversation so I'm really excited about the day uh what also is uh special about we have opened up to the schools is that uh this was an alternative to discipline so if you've uh receive consequences one of the things is that we communicate with the schools that you can't use this in little suspension or in support of suspension just so we're given a solution so for them to go they can come we'll sign off on it to show that they've attended and you know send their account prior to their consequence um this is also also a great opportunity to lead into the program that we just recently started at the high school in Middle School we've been uh building relationships uh starting off with the mentoring programs but there as well so with us inside as well as I said there are some external programs that we'll be able to Showcase uh outside mentoring programs as well um we are still accepting applications for the vendors so I would like more vendors from the community because the goal is for these young men to realize what resources are out there we want them to realize that they're our business I mean there are work opportunities as well as activities that keep them engaged so if summer programs uh summer camps all those things we definitely want them to uh to be aware of those uh resources a little bit more night good evening everyone um just to piggyback on what Mr Watson was saying another beautiful thing about this event is that we have alumni from each town that this District serves to also um they went on to become First Responders and police officers as well as entrepreneurs and they are very eager to pour into our young men so we're really looking forward to that and they're excited just as well as we are so we appreciate the opportunity what did the enrollment numbers look like right now how what kind of response did you get um as of right now we have about 50 students that are enrolled uh we do know that there are some uh that's from the digital application we do know that uh we've asked we've also given an opportunity for uh for the schools to have paper applications so as of right now we're sitting around 50.

Emrick was a recipient of eight Emmy Awards for his play by play broadcasting on Friday January 6th Doc Emrick made up for surprise visit to Southwood and presented his 2014 Emmy to the school doc felt it fitting to give the 2014 Emmy because that marked the 50th anniversary of his graduation from Southland High School the Emmy will soon be displayed at Southwest High School thank you doc Emery So really really cool and I would imagine that our new Plain Dealer editor will do a great piece I interviewed him this morning oh you already did okay all right we've talked about that sounded like to congratulate the following athletes for being named to the out County team the performance of their recent Holiday Tournament in Manchester Lea sweet Hopper and coal weiner we're gonna go Knights South would like to recognize Aaron later 2020 Southwest graduate for making a dean's list for the fall semester at IU Bloomington Aaron is the daughter Annie and Brent laner way to go Aaron and that was Metro North and this is one I believe I'll go ahead and read it but um no this is more already though so thank you all right that's all I have for those and then we'll be doing the spotlight let me just go right into the spotlight well after uh kind of a long pause of our staff Spotlight uh we paused because of covet and so we are actually then starting up this second semester so this time it's a little bit different in the past we had anyone in the school district in other words other staff members in any any community members anyone could actually nominate a staff member but we kind of changed a little bit this time and it's only parents and not necessarily staff nominating other staff members and so I'm going to go ahead and let Mrs Moore sit down because she one time she talked about that but I'll let her stay there if that's all right if you still want to do that because unfortunately the two parents that nominated her and she's selected to be the spotlight they were unable to come one said that she was unable to come at the very beginning which is understandable the other one actually got ill and so she did not want to spread any germs to any of us and so I'm just going to share that Spotlight and first of all this is from parent Jamie crite and I'll read this Mrs Moore is always outside almost every morning rain snow and shine helping parents get their children to school I've seen her sitting on the sidewalk with an upset child comforting them and just gets down to their level literally I absolutely love it she shows so much compassion for the students as a parent of two one child graduated and I never witnessed this with my first child it was a different school system but I feel it makes a huge difference to me as a parent and to my youngest child currently at Metro North Elementary I am very grateful so Mrs Moore we know that you work hard on doing all those things and so she wanted to Spotlight you on that so congratulations and we have a number two though number two um Spotlight from Great Grandma Deborah Casey she's the one that was going to be here and unfortunately got ill so was not able to come she is so sweet not Deborah Mrs Moore yeah she drives me too I don't know her very well I just talked to her on the phone but Mr Moore she is so sweet and very helpful if you have a question she always has the answer or finds out she is a very caring person and loves all the students and I will tell you too and I know it's not comfortable for Mrs Moore to hear all those things in front of people and things like that that's just the way it is that we that we do do this and we love to do that but she also wrote a whole other piece and I'm not going to read it all but she wanted to share that you know she she said I hate to have to inform you that I will not be able to be here but she just talks about all the things that you've done with their with their little uh Norse that had a hard time maybe getting registered and getting all into the program you just really really worked it out um you know she was heartbroken at first thinking it wasn't going to happen but you did a lot of different things some of the things that you do as far as the different grants and all those different things actually help out and so um she was super nice in the whole process she stayed in touch to it all I greatly appreciate everything she's done for us she went beyond and above her duties thank you and God bless so I think that's great to hear that um from from her and so one thing that we do want to say is that um First Farmers National Bank or first First Farmers and Trust Bank they actually have been our sponsor for several years now and they continue to be our sponsor so we're doing something a little bit different we've done a lot of different things the last thing we did is a blanket which was kind of nice too but msdwc is going to start a store and that store it's going to be an online store there's going to be logos of all the schools and different things like that and basically the spotlight winner in this case Mrs Moore will be able we'll get a voucher in those vouchers each time will be forty dollars to go in the store and purchase anything from there so of course it won't suck and there's no shoes it won't officially open until the middle of February but you will be getting a voucher to be able to use it and I will let you know though there is an expiration date and I think we people put that I think it's what I told him July 1 or July 31st so probably the day after you get it so anyway um let's give Mrs more round of applause here's your voucher right here so we'll get that to you later don't let me forget it yeah I believe and so any of our guests that need to leave want to leave you can leave or you can stay for the whole meeting we'll be done by 10 guaranteed yourself foreign [Music] [Laughter] [Music] it's all in favor say hi um approval of financial reports uh let's begin with coins questions on claims Chris I noticed we had the big payoffs there on your bonds two bonds yeah those will be the completely paid off so then we just have to go one bottom Remain the rest of the this calendar year foreign payroll 11 and 12 since we have two of them here we'll take motion to prove both of those together yeah there's nothing special um that payroll 11 which is the December 15th pay the big difference there is the fact that that's when we paid out our teacher appreciation Grant dollars that we received from the state so that's why you see such a larger pay amount there and then uh the last payroll of the calendar year which would have been the payroll 12 for December 29th that one is more of your standard payroll I moved to accept payroll let's look at that all in favor of approving payrolls 11 and 12.

um those Camp presentations are pretty cool and we're all invited to those you want to give the board just a little background on Camp uh yeah so um really the aim of you know as a little senior certified to have you know as senior project um basically at the end we're tasked with you know tuning into or like having a lot of focus around what we want to do uh when we reach college level and Beyond so everyone kind of focuses in on either on the personal interests or possible career path or something of the source and they develop a product idea around it whether it be the way you want to help the community or is an actual intangible item you want to create um so you spend um basically the whole first semester developing your projects as well as you know doing in-class research and making an entertainment bibliography and you also have to reach out and find your inventors for the project to kind of help in like Aid your understanding around the area you're you know trying to pursue with the project um and then we have our in-class presentations soon to kind of you know develop them enough to then be presented to people on the 19th where you're going to be able to know do like a little walk around and get to see certain students for this you know a few little stops on the way and other ones are going to be like made presentations you can like sit down and listen into um but I definitely think it'll be very fun you know it's a very like wide variety like I'm personally doing an auditory poetry book and there's other people you know throwing out Trails or you know building a car or um starting clubs and whatnot so it's gonna be very cool to see like the broad like range of focuses people chose for women projects excellent that was a great over here and we'll be speaking with the curriculum committee too uh at our meeting next week to be able to talk a little bit more about what camp looks like why that's a part of of what we have within Canton and what how that's a requirement with the state but then also how we build that across our K-12 program too so great job really good okay and then just to finish up upcoming uh the prisons concert for the high school is going to be Saturday February 14th the theme is road trip it's just fun and I think it's the fourth right after correcting Saturday February 4th oh sorry uh yeah did I not say that 14th I think you said that was going to be my Valentine's Day I don't mean to cry I'm gonna have to think of something else yeah and then um the CHS Earth choral concert is going to be Wednesday March 1st um for ongoing we have that the winter sports have continued their games and needs and the CHS musical rehearsals have begun and the performances I know it says 17th 18th and 19th but it's 16 17 and 18.

his masters from some Houston State University in a doctorate from University of Houston he began his career in Education First as a substitute teacher just like me in Minnesota before moving to Texas where he taught middle school math he served in various roles in the Aldine School District a large Urban District in the Houston metropolitan area including director of Technology director of the director and Executive Director of Human Resources before joining Islands 14 actually he joined us in um in July as the Director of Human Resources so he is in-house um so before he joined um last summer he served three years as an assistant superintendent in the Cleveland Independent School District in in Texas one of the five fastest growing schools districts in that state Nathan is an avid traveler and cook in participating annual cook-offs based in scholarships funds for students um so Nathan is going to be replacing Dr McKenna but Dr McCann's last day here will be June 30th so he will complete his time here uh we went through a process where Chiefs we looked at all the candidates two candidates came up as finalists and we narrowed it down to uh Dr Bolton so uh the next this semester will be we're going to be overlapping to ensure that everything that is being put in place in HR uh has a strong Foundation to to be sustained and continued so I just wanted you to see your face and uh he's currently supporting not only as a director of HR and will continue but also as a director or um uh the the push for communications uh Communications you will recall we had an executive director uh before and right now is under um uh Dr McKenna uh Communications well the two of them are managing it so we are putting a director position it has been posted has been posted in um November and uh he's going to be open until it's filled we want to know and ensure there's the best person for communications and that position will continue being under HR because it's just working very well that way so um thank you Dr Bolton for accepting and we uh we're excited that you will continue with us [Applause] thank you for bringing forward that um Dr McKenna we're so sad to see you go but totally understand and I appreciate that we've hired from within because I've been able to witness the amazing work um I will say again and I I know I always say it but I've seen more movement in our HR departments and since you you've both been here then since I've been on the board so thank you so much for your great work and and I'm so happy that that's going to continue moving forward and I'm still going to have to you know say the first task I gave Dr poten although he's not the HR Chief yet is to figure out a positions to ensure that Dr McKenna stays so not of the nature person anymore because we now have one but she will stay thank you thank you so much I forgot I saw how to talk um next up is 7.1 business action items we're moving on sorry approval of the 2023-24 and 20 24 25 student calendar um I believe we have a presentation on this or okay yes ma'am Dr Lauria yes uh thank you madam president members of the board I will ask uh our um HR and uh Dr McKenna are you Sheila I'm sorry you're the next one yes and Sheila to come up here and this is a revised calendar or a proposed calendar that we were bringing to you uh for the next two years uh in the past um or let me backtrack a little bit the teacher negotiated contract allows us to have 160 176 days of student contact that that means you know instructional days for our students um about a year before I came on board those uh that um the the student contact days were reduced to 171 days and uh it is my belief as a superintendent and educator and we share this belief without labor as well it is important for our students to have the maximum amount of contact days as we can possibly provide so this contract is going to be doing two things I mean contract my apologies this calendar is going to be doing two things not only ensuring that we go back to 176 days so that we can continue offering them and maximizing the time that we can provide to of instruction for students but also we'll be addressing some of the um some of that roller coaster to uh with lack of a better term of um of teacher morale that we see in in research in the nation right so you're going to hear a little bit of that research and how this um this calendar is aiming to address that to ensure that our teachers feel supported and they feel um uh you know they they can keep up that need that we that we want them to have so it's burnt thing thank you so good evening Madam president Lovato distinguished members of the board superintendent lorian Beauty audience as as Dr Lydia mentioned my name is Sheila Burke and I'm honored to serve as the chief academic officer I'm here tonight just to be able to provide an overview of the work that our calendar committee completed for the 2023-24 and 2024-25 student calendars that are on the board agenda for tonight foreign the purpose of our calendar committee was to create a student calendar as Dr alert me and Dr Lydia mentioned that meets the needs of our students and both academically and supports our school-based staff as we go through the school year right it feels like a whirlwind especially for brand new teachers and so on the slide that's displayed now this kind of helps to describe the roller coaster ride that we go through specifically for staff that are entering right into our profession and so our calendar helps to be able to help mitigate some of those with strategically placed breaks and days off that I'll speak to later in a couple upcoming slides as our calendar committee began their work on the two proposed Calendars our Collective interests were to develop a calendar that one supports our District's transformation efforts and turnaround efforts specifically by leveraging our retention and recruitment efforts that you heard Dr Lydia mention as well as increasing the number of learning days and minutes for our students we wanted to be able to maximize those with increasing those for what we previously were to making sure that we were right at the um 176 school days that's allotted in addition we wanted to ensure that our calendar was predictable meaning that we're we recognized for many students that we are their constant for us and that we are Dependable both with the relationships and the check-in with our school-based staff but also with meal services Transportation Etc and so we wanted to be able to strategically place breaks that made it predictable for students and leveraging those times so it didn't feel like we had three days on two days off again a four day week followed by a five-day week and so you'll see that reflected in our calendar around where they're placed and the last thing that we wanted to be able to ensure was that we're supporting staff with their professional learning needs so you'll notice in our our calendar so that we have uh District professional days one per quarter that then again align with our academic Excellence Playbook our calendar committee began meeting in August of 2022 and it consisted of both parents from our school communities our doc our district accountability committee members are classified and certified staff both school and District administrators and Department leads specifically from business finance operations human resources and academics uh and then lastly our calendar committee viewed a variety of data sets one of those happens to be included on the slide that's displayed now and one of those was staff absences our committee strategically placed breaks again not only to be able to bring consistency to students but also to address the Peaks and the roller coaster ride from the slide that was displayed earlier and some of those Peaks you'll see around the October time frame and so we wanted to be able to bring some relief so that we're helping to support the Recruitment and Retention efforts of our staff and some of the burnout rates that that we know happen at that time of the year uh before I turn it back over to Dr lady I just want to be able to take a moment to publicly thank all of the calendar committee members that came in after hours to be able to work on this with the two proposed calendars that are in front of you today so I want to thank them again but Madam president Lovato Dr Lydia this concludes my update around the student calendar thank you so much for that great presentation uh board members questions comments I just appreciate the overall intentionality and thought that went into the planning of it um I like that stakeholders are involved not only from you know District administrators and school administrators but parents and DAC um just an intentionality being an educator I know that October is a really hard month and so um seeing that those intentional breaks are in there everything you said I think um just really speaks to the level of um commitment intentionality organization that we are really pushing forward I appreciate that there's um is this the format that it's going to go out to parents or no Madam president Lovato board members Zubia thank you for the question no this format was done internally for us to be able to look at and remove really the human error as you remember this year we had some issues with the dates and their holidays as we had humans counting out those pieces so we've put together a formula with the help of Dr Boughton from HR to be able to put those in and so you can see in front of you the actual dates counting down so the start and end dates didn't change we wanted to be able to make sure that was consistent for our students and maximize the days that we have why we're strategically placing dates so what you have in front of you is the version that shows the actual account dates for your reference in the top Corner the top right corner you'll see the number of minutes broken down by a grade span level so Elementary which includes preschool middle school high school the number of hours allocated to those and then the number of days the state department recognizes both the number of hours minutes and the number of days and so we can meet them in both areas to the far right you'll see the number of school days that each of those grades fans have making sure that we're not exceeding the 188 contact days that we have within the master agreement with our certified staff so your contract days or each of them are in here too so thank you yeah because I when I looked at this I'm like um talk about confusing for parents as a parent if I use my parent lens I'd be like I have no clue what's going on and the other thing too that was missing here is like all the phone numbers to the schools because I know I find those very helpful especially I don't know um if that has helped over the years to really help with the attendance issue of people not calling in to excuse their kids half the time is just finding that phone number and I knew always to look on the calendar because it was there so when I saw it wasn't I'm like oh that might not help again once um once the calendars have been approved we will put them into a format that is familiar to our district community members so that it's consistent for them this is for internal planning purposes so you can see the number of days and how we accounted for all of them I I also wanted to ask I know for a while there um the PD was one of the reasons so I I used to be on the calendar committee for many years and I know um one of the reasonings for the the way it was structured because of meeting the numbers was a lot had to do with the PD and making sure that there was enough PD for teachers and as we heard tonight it's very beneficial to them so I do appreciate that this is in there um and and like I said it's it's good that you've been working with them and asking them as well I know for a while they're even on the committee it didn't it feels interesting because you have a certain amount of people because you can't have everybody um obviously you would have you know thousands of versions of the calendar if you asked every employee what they thought but uh just having that representation like director Estrada said and making sure that everybody's voice was heard is important because I know every year is different and the years passed it's been focused on PD for principal um you know directed PD and then there's been focus on PD that's just for um you know like-minded teachers like all the science teachers all this so there's every year there was something so this actually clears it up a little bit better so thank you for them and um oh if I may add one important piece here that I would like to highlight um with having a break in October in another in February addressing that roller coaster that's research that has been out there for years right this is not the roller coaster in Adams 14 it's in the nation maybe in the world um we could we have the opportunity now to add 10 instructional days to targeted students because our plan is to be able to provide camps you know fall camp winter camps and uh and have targeted students to come in in that way we're going to be adding 10 or at least eight because if we do a four week Camp during those weeks and four-day Camp we're gonna be adding instructional days to targeted students so that is only possible if we have a number of days together where everybody's off rather than one day here and one day there because there's there's no traction that way so I just want to highlight that thank you that was going to be one of my questions was um since we're having additional breaks we'll still provide food service and be for camps I guess so during school practice or activities and coverage okay absolutely um my other question as director Zubia was speaking did we maintain the same number of PD days or increase or decrease that do you know Madam president Lovato thank you for the question we've maintained the same number of PD days that we currently have within this year's calendar so there are four District PD days one per quarter we still have our principal directed time that we utilized at the school base level but we felt like right now this was sufficient to be able to help us meet and execute our goals that we're both outlaying from the board and from the district great thank you so much um any other questions comments I think I mentioned was I love the intentionality around providing certain camps for groups of students I'm hoping that it's it's a wide range of supports and services for not only like struggling students but students who might need that extra acceleration um yeah yes that is correct um when we talk about any camps we're not only talking about scaffolding or supporting students who may need that extra push but also ensuring that our our teachers are planning for those that need to be accelerated we cannot forget any of the student groups or performance groups that we have I would like to see like the Arts embedded in there somewhere that is correct opportunities for those Hands-On activities that we feel we do not have time anymore because of the number of standards that are in our curriculum um I think another quick comment I know um the district has um gone Leaps and Bounds to um improve our relationship with the City of Commerce City specifically their rec center and I know there's usually some coordination there with our breaks so if I can just ask that we continue that collaboration because they also plan a lot of their activities around the district since they serve our population did we have a different schedule for calendar or for Central sorry yes um the the difference that we had for Central was the added instruction um PD days for teachers um so we'll continue offering that additional five days uh that it's uh that was negotiated with with labor as well for added PD for um for Central Elementary yes so they that those days will be the same breaks they will have the same breaks the days will be added at the beginning of the school year so uh they will come five days before every other teacher shows up so that they can have their um their own professional development thank you Miss Burke so we have been asked to um take action um may I have a motion to approve the 2023-24 and 24 25 calendars a second thank you any further discussion uh Ramona roll call please Mr Amador aye Ms Estrada Ms Lovato aye Ms Zubia all right that passes unanimously thank you um next on the agenda is 7.2 approval of Recruitment and Retention incentive uh Dr Lydia is there anything that you're you or your staff would like to share regarding this item um yes Madam president members of the board um thank you I will have Dr mechanic come up um and even um Jason this has been a collaborative work um I should say also the item before with um the calendars for the instructional days because these are things that we want to use as a strong recruitment tool to not only attract teachers but also to retain teachers last year we had a retention assigning bonus that will retention and sign-in bonus for teachers and this year we want to ensure that our teachers are early in the school year if you um of course if it's approved [Music] uh realize that how much we recognize their hard work and how much we want for them to stay so this would be an incentive that is um for all all employees not only um certified but also classified employees um and in collaboration with our early negotiations in the past you heard this sometimes in May sometimes in July or later but now we want to start doing that early so that can not only use of a retention recruitment tool but also for you to to not get information at the last minute Madam president Madam superintendent trustees beside me on both my right and left are two colleagues that I'm very blessed to work with that are completely in the work and we started talking early about the focus on two big ticket items here to allow us to continue our momentum one is recruitment but even more important than recruitment is retention and when we listened to Lynn Wayne and Jason we really wanted to focus more on retention than recruitment so if you look at those amounts it's saying to people early on if approved we want you to stay home in Adams 14 and continue the work and changing the narrative that we're working on right now and so we got together early talked about this often and wanted to make sure that the best teachers the best staff are here in Adams 14 we want to keep them in Adams 14.

uh for police 2018 Community Services 2018. and frankly it's almost all self-promoting PR fluff instead of real analysis as taxpayers were entitled to the whole truth including when we fall short of our goals uh finally on the gas ban we don't need a transition period we just had one seven all-electric projects over two years along with about two dozen projects using gas 30 seconds anyway great yeah anyway gradual implementation makes perfect sense for other policy areas but for climate it's the wrong framing each time we approve a gas burning project we're putting CO2 into the atmosphere for 50 years where it remains for at least another 200 heating the planet so it's not like we delay for a year or two and we're good with every decision now we're screwing the next 10 Generations let's get an Ordnance done so we can move on to the really hard stuff that's time thank you any other callers that is it okay thank you callers for your comments so um next on the agenda is uh a reflection on 2022 energy commission work uh so when Joel uh and Carlene and I met we thought this was worthwhile and we'd like this to be a little bit different Focus than the work session that was held in December where we talked about comment or our our topics for 2023 and a little bit more about what went well in um what could have done better in using those lessons learned that hopefully we can capture tonight we can do a better job in um advising Council and providing a forum for discussions on energy and greenhouse gas emissions here in the city of Ann Arbor the commission is has a primary function uh the uh role of advising city council and in particular our city council Liaisons on energy and in greenhouse gas emissions related topics and so um I thought what I would do first is ask council member Briggs and council member redina to offer their Reflections on 2022 and then opened it up for the rest of the commission so either one of you if you'd be willing to go first uh that would be great all right well I'll kick it off I guess then um yeah I think um in terms of what I think was particularly helpful from kind of my role as liaison um and the council's work I think that obviously there were a number of different agenda items that got moved forward but the the times where energy commission really dug into a subject um for example and brought in some ex expert speakers um and um around the seu and municipalization um I think that was really valuable um both in terms of bringing me up to speed feeling like that we were really doing our due diligence um as a commission and putting forward a recommendation to council and then also being able to provide really strong resources to the community later on to be able to look at and dig into a subject um I thought the um the speakers that were brought in about Green Building from other areas that was really helpful so that's personally I think what when I kind of think quickly back to 2022 really pops out to me and what I would love to see uh Stewie Warren in 2023 and Beyond so in quick response to that and to also guide everyone else's comments um the discussion on the SCU and all the aspects of that actually all took place in 2021 ending with a resolution that we passed in December of 2021 but I think certainly the year flew by didn't it so um but I think the general comment and certainly the the one about buildings and our our external uh presenter on uh green construction to McDonald that was definitely something that was I think positive this year um anything else to add council member Riggs or I'll let you chime back in at an appropriate time later if you want um council member radina anything you'd like to share with us yeah I I started taking down a couple of notes with this item and [Music] um because the uh the seu conversation was in the in the municipal energy conversation was I think actually such a really good example of the commission diving in and bringing in experts from other communities and um and I think also because Council voted on that voted on the RFP Midway through this year it was still fresh on our minds this year um but I looked back a little bit and I think um I agree completely with Council breaks in in kind of the important role this body plays in educating me as a liaison and as a council member kind of the deeper dive that we get to take on some of the issues during the time in this meeting uh makes it a lot easier for me when when issues come before for Council itself and provide me with I think a better perspective to talk to some of my colleagues when they have questions as well and so I agree completely and kind of that bringing in issue area experts and doing some of the deeper dives into the issues facing the community I think that's really helpful um and I know that sometimes I think particularly for those of you who are often bringing your own levels of expertise to this body sometimes it can it can feel like these might be things that some of you already know or or you know you can chime in at times and add your own expertise as the expertise that we've brought in is speaking um but in your your role of advising Council I think that also demonstrates exactly why many of you are you know around the screen is because you do have benefici's um but you're helping to provide advice and guidance to us which I think is really helpful um I look back at just a few of the the resolutions also that that were passed this year and um I know that we we discussed Workforce housing solar installations um all electric appliances green rental housing um home energy rating disclosure and so I do think that there was some really substantial work that was happening over the last year um and so I I don't want to lose sight of that as well I think the education piece is important but this group is also moving recommendations through to council which I think are helpful as well um and and I think from that perspective you know encouraging weighing in on in areas where we can continue to advance climate-friendly policy and things like that is really helpful for my colleagues at the council table to hear as well and so I think when there are those opportunities to weigh in I think we've appreciated that um and then I would just say the one thing that I think you know this isn't necessarily uh specific to this group but uh because you are charged with you know energy and climate policy and other boards and commissions are charged with others one of the things that I find with a lot of my commissions that I serve on is trying to to also just keep in mind the bigger picture when we're doing some of this work and there are times that we want to charge forward with something but may also need to remember that you know it could have impact on housing policy or rental policy or environmental policy and and just kind of making sure that we keep that broader perspective so that we're not um there are times I think council member Briggs and I find this quite a bit in in our roles in different as different Liaisons to different groups that at times we have a lot of competing priorities in the city and sometimes it's really easy for us to move things together um in a really cohesive way and other times where there is tension and so trying to just keep in perspective that there are times that we may all feel really really passionately about something but have to acknowledge that that if we move something really quickly in One Direction it may slow something else down that's also been highlighted as a priority of the city and vice versa and so just keeping that broad perspective um and then the last thing I'll add is not necessarily a reflection of the work but just something that I continue I've noticed and I think we brought up once before and um as it's that time of year I think where we might uh have to renew our own bylaws and things like that um this is the only body where as council members uh that I serve on anyway that as a council member I do have a vote also which I just think is a an interesting I sometimes find it a bit challenging actually because because you guys are trying to provide advice to council but I'm also voting on it at this table and so it might be something to think about because it is um I it adds kind of a different perspective when when I have to vote on advising my colleagues um it's not often that I want to to shy away from being able to vote or say you should take some power away from me but there's kind of a different responsibility that I have on this body than I have on different commissions throughout the city so just something that I I reflect about thank you very much for both of those perspectives uh uh council member Regina your last point was interesting to hear I I serve as everybody knows as liaison to the environmental condition and the council Representatives have a vote there and as far as I know council member Dish as liaison to the Planning Commission also has a vote on that commission yes I do think it's pretty I think it's pretty inconsistent throughout the day yeah something that I thought I'd bring up it is the only one that I'm on three commission that I have about interesting and I think interesting for for everybody amongst us uh I'd like to open things up um Lessons Learned I'm good and bad uh how can we improve uh what are your reactions to last year and I recognize that we have a number of relatively new members so it's going to be harder for you to to comment but hopefully you followed the work of the commission a little bit and have some opinions even if they're relatively um new um based on your limited uh participation so open it up just for General comments and discussion much so seeing none I'll offer a few of my own and that might also spur some others thoughts on the matter um I I agree um with both council members about um the really positive things that have happened um I think we passed a number of resolutions uh that were I think spread a lot of conversation um certainly among this group um and also as mentioned by councilman Regina also were considered by Council and and passed the council and I think that's something that's really indicative of the kinds of things that we can do is to take on a subject as council member Briggs said discuss it in detail uh have that lead to a resolution and then hopefully have that result in in action um in that the city council level so I think that's that's really positive another thing that I found helpful um is the presentation that we had from Washington County and their climate action plan and I think we see a direct connection um between what we did in Ann Arbor and what the county is doing I think a lot of that is attributable to the work that this commission has done over the last couple of years and certainly also to the work that OSI did um it just so happens that some of the lead Consultants on the County's plan were Consultants that Missy engaged for the A200 plan and obviously that carried over and I think there's also some good Lessons Learned in that plan um one thing for me that was both a plus and maybe a minus is that we had presentations as mentioned earlier by those who called in for public comment about the herd ordinance and also the green rental housing program on proposed ordinance um on the one hand it was disappointing that those really still had yet to move forward I think on the other hand uh given the option of not having those presented to the commission and not having the opportunity to weigh in probably would have led to potentially even greater delays and bigger problems and I think the fact that they were presented relatively early on um at least certainly with green rental housing program herd had been in in process as most of you known for two and a half three years um but certainly with green rail housing program I think we raised um during the meeting and then in a subsequent separate meeting a lot of issues that were then able to be considered by staff so I think generally speaking Joe at least message for me is you know the earlier that things can be brought to the commission um and be considered with the expertise expert input of the commission the better outputs that we're going to have in in the long run and then just that also to reflect and I put these down independently before the meeting um I I'm hoping that we can see progress accelerated on uh our activities and that also accelerate activities on greenhouse gas emissions and I also see um legal as having been a historic bottleneck and if this is indeed a climate and energy is indeed a crisis for the city and for us um across you know the United States and the globe then I think we really need to think about how we can accelerate things through legal it's been an issue ever since I've been involved with the energy commission since 2016 and it might be something that we need to talk about when we talk about climate Village funding that more funding for climate goes specifically to Legal resources so those are my thoughts and I see that that uh or your own ruminations led to a couple of other ideas uh commissioner McCoy and then commissioner overpeck yeah similar to what others have said I think um I particularly appreciated the times that we've had presentations that are clearly linked to next steps um whether it be you know a draft of um a resolution to pass or clear plans for follow-up discussions um I think you know it's useful both to be able to get the information and use the space to do that but then also to feel like we're serving a purpose of like carrying that information through um and I feel like sometimes when we have presentations that it doesn't automatically lead to something like that it can feel it can get lost and hard to pick back up um and also feel like it's unsure what what the purpose of us having the presentation was so I I just wanted to emphasize that I I really have found those useful and particularly when it's clear what we can do with the information next um that yeah that was my main thing um I had another thing and I can't remember it so I'll raise my hand if I do commissioner Peck yeah I I like all the comments we've had and including those from the public at the beginning um I'd like to see us in 2023 really be more action-oriented and uh so by the end of this year we can really feel more tangible progress as a city and going carbon neutral and allocating resources as a way that really puts that number one on up first and foremost uh I don't think we should uh bury our concern for a just Solutions in doing that though so we have to be a little careful on that front and the other thing is over the holidays or since we last met I had a chance to get to know uh University of Michigan's new CFO Chief Financial Officer Jeff chattis he's the guy who's in charge of uh all our physical um processes on campus and going carbon neutral and he wants to speed up the University of Michigan's carbon neutrality um and he's really thinking big and outside the box uh and ways to do that um I mentioned it would be cool to see the university work better with the city and he's enthusiastic about that as well and if we wanted to have a session with him to hear his latest thoughts on what we're going to do what we're doing at Michigan University of and how we might collaborate you know where we would all have probably some input on you know what could this University of Michigan do better to in a collaborative Spirit to move the needle faster um I think we could talk him into it and uh just need a good enough warning I did follow up on methane leakage and that a whole uh debate is really got a lot of uncertainty uh but I would I will be on the record right already to say we got to get we got to ban natural gas I mean it's just that's the curse and it's going to be there for a long time as one of the early commenters made uh their comments focused on uh and I did follow up with Greg keolian too if we wanted to hear more uh about the nuts and bolts of the different ideas that are coming out of Michigan sort of state of the art Urban neutrality ideas mostly focused on campus but uh increasingly we're trying to focus more on how can we speed things up in society in Mission you know in Ann Arbor could be a great way to test some of these ideas um and the last thing that I still feel kind of like murky um and this might go to Embers point about let's get you know um see if we could ask for some really good presentation some research it's just I think we're still pretty um unsure about how the federal money that's in the bipartisan infrastructure bill and the even bigger pot of money in the inflation reduction act how that money might uh spark quicker change in Michigan and make sure that we are surfing those waves as well in a in a very uh thought out way well thought out way thanks thank you great great input um commissioner come Smith and then back to commission required yes thank you um so yeah I just wanted to kind of echo two points um first just wanted to Echo uh commissioner overpeck uh and commissioner McCoy's uh uh ideas on you know making um some of our discussions more actionable and so kind of building off of that if there's an opportunity similar to how we presented topics in our December working session of where you know we presented a kind of a clear objection objective excuse me for that topic and then if there's you know an opportunity to be a bit more intentional about at the conclusion of that topic discussion of next steps that lead to you know tangible actions um you know whether it be gathering more information you know to ultimately build to a resolution or a recommendation um again just to further support uh the council in making some tangible progress here uh and then my second point was uh building off of commissioner Howard um or excuse me council member renita's comments on you know uh ensuring that we're bringing in some broader context recognizing that environmental commission I understand we have a liaison position there but if there's an opportunity just to evaluate if there's other commissions of which we should have uh Stronger collaboration and connection with I think also in the December working session understanding that there's a lot of great discussion and progress being made on the transportation committee for instance and recognizing there's some strong synergies with some of the work that we're doing here um you know maybe not every meeting but think about what's that appropriate Cadence to bring in some updates to understand where there could be closer collaboration to take advantage of you know uh kind of identifying some synergistic opportunities to work together to make some stronger recommendations here great thanks thank good input and I would suggest to all of us myself included that as we hear about these kinds of uh let's say things that are happening in in other commissions or in the community at large where there may be conflicts where there may be synergies that we bring those up in topics for future agendas um and also even bring them up as commissioner uh updates or Council updates so um don't don't hesitate to use those opportunities in our in our regular reading agendas um commissioner McCoy and then commissioner 11.

and this one has been a while and I to understand that better and I didn't want to know that for the school that it is because it is an alternative accelerating program and the way they set up the expectation and the way it was explained to me depending and depending what the student produces during the fall semester the expectation is that each student is going to have to demonstrate the same and then more so which means they expect it to grow 100 of what they grew in the Box they will be expected to grow also in the spring so given that all the students are working at different rates and if the student completed 10 activities during the during the fall in one class there are the exhibition is the demographic will pay that out of 10 or four so that's 100 growth in their expectation it was really completed one entire course the expectation is that for the spring semester they will box complete another course but something else so they their expectation is 100 plus for each one other students and in the area uh that's for the white goal and which is the very first one and as you go on to the next one and then it's called their expectation is going to be the students will show 15 growth um depending on where they're at before there are they expected to grow the percentage and depending on the the percentage of students that grow to take percentage from going around that's where the boys are going to that's what the points are going to be allocated for the teachers and determine their monies that they will be receiving the rules are exactly the same for me as well as so man that the expectation is based on what is what this article will grow um 10 a minimum of 10 from their starting point um the expectation is whatever the student completes in that first and that's there was a first degree then the expectation is the same amount plus go back to me that's a little bit I really like that foreign okay [Music] thank you that's not how long this meeting um present them with their members of the board um I also want to thank their inflatability to all of the teachers um in which they have been able to go back and be a review will change multiple times and that way we can align the goals to what we're beginning and I asked one of the things uh the board members for the patient and I know we were supporting all the way back in December but it is more time is giving us also a higher level verification on the goals and we recommend to continue to work and make changes um at the high school level and since the community level that where we can bring before you via data version so we look forward to that only by the rules but also supporters who did achievement foreign [Music] a minute disappointed we have one for every school sometimes one all right and I want to take responsibility without a whole lot more yeah normally they're here to present again I understand that you've been living on a Transit but kind of children yes [Music] I guess um I really appreciate the the details for getting together during this hour every single uh basic time for families and to work on this and to go back and to look at how they could um move forward and I guess what I what I really um is the um when we have our board retreat the goal that you know is there and we're going to be seen and stuff and how this plays into that so so you know that's that's what I'm I'm really looking forward to but I do appreciate all the work that was put into this and the time um I do understand but the concepts or the conflict that it isn't really um the second secondary foreign [Music] represents thank you [Music] I don't again [Music] take it back some of the key information that will be really helpful for us foreign [Music] you can actually also see up there or at least the presenters of the teachers I guess and it is 70 or higher and based on the changes that we we have met with our high school and provided guidance last week they gave it up the best shot um but there's still areas and we have a great opportunity to be there once again it brings out to the principal provided so much more additional support um and they're they are already working and playing all the time and then you have to be very aggressive between them this week to get a change together for when the teacher said leave it back to us my name is Wednesday so we can bring in before uh the government for like country and then before so then in particular I guess just to kind of hear it from them because they're here but overall internet um or primary talked about how um are off because if you go all the way to the bottom of the document classroom data that's always 40 points and then instructions the teacher evaluation we look at the points just on this totals 100 I've offered that guidance um some things are told to our staff that they could eliminate the teacher evaluations so I know like the primary the point s even though it's heavy like the 50 points is great but there's only 40 when it's allotted for this whole Creole for the classroom data which is just we have another evaluation out including their evaluation Within the point yeah I mean so this has to be revised but that would be my only thing and then to go back to my note you stated what percentage of growth I think the the thought process behind that was this is actually our first school year back in person so right now especially like our our third grade cohort that cohort was when we called the market with kids because that's when it hit us pretty strong so those cool they are unless you know about a year and a half so we stated they I know the process for them is let's see how they're growing whether you know we could have a ticket started at 0.50 they're not what they need to be but they're showing that correct and I think that's why they didn't attach ment but if you see that we definitely can go back I think that's fair consideration because obviously because it's across the board for every student right but I understand that it's the one I think that that was a fair inclusion in the previous clients because later it'll be an expectation Iraqi is still achieve yeah and that's not to say that we're not working on that because it's funny because it's still gross it's just not enough but again with I know we don't want to talk about Focus but it's a reality where these kids are still trying to make those games I agree thank you thank you thank you thank you Mr winning numbers no we I think we have a good clarification representative and I think the direction that Mr Diaz wants to wants to provide that Clarity so that information that you see that we haven't shared because it hasn't been performingly rolled out but that's something I'm doing Friday um um but when we landed out with our 301 representative I felt like some light bulbs kind of went off and it just gave her some direction because uh previously there was lots of different things being thrown out and I think they were trying to capture all of those things and try to put it in the 301 um just because there was a lot of inaccurate information that we've been put out and we are doing music this is what we're doing and they wanted a way to kind of show that but it's going to get reworked and maybe you know the weighting of the points was a concern but like it Mr Dia said I can't go in and say you need to change these points I can kind of like hey you might want to consider this okay feature device plan so we have an ielt tomorrow with our content needs and this is going to be the focus of our conversation um so that way they can have conversations with their events and then we'll reevaluate on Friday during the PPE to kind of narrow this and have a ready to go through [Music] um no I'm just I'm very proud of my team they did it all on their own so I trusted them and they I told them they needed guidance they can talk to Mr Diaz because I couldn't um so there they pretty much I I am pretty confident that they know what they're doing no just to add that I'm pretty confident with our 301 we are a little more unique to get you guys know um but I like the fact that with Mr B is his guidance to do it that we ensured that it was 100 and a couple of our kids because many of my kids are in different levels anyway so I think it's a SmartPhone I think it's very attainable it's realistic it's timely um I guess Automotive comment I really um thank you Mr Stevens for all your um work and helping the um the sites get the get this and showing them that there is expectations there is a goal and providing that information is helping them Reach that and so um let's go to sit down I really appreciate that you're you're taking your time to make sure that you're doing what you need to do to meet the goals that um the numbers there we didn't say that I didn't see it and so you know your input and that is really really helpful for you for your site and again having confidence this is your team you know that's getting Mr Fox everything that they're doing is to your cyclists and me because it's different from all the stuff I really appreciate it and then possibly um there's you know we want to get this done we want to get it set but because there's no um objections I guess on the goals that we see that we continue to move that way and then just waiting for the additional to pay for it and then um [Music] thank you all right thank you all so much we can go ahead in the journey [Music] all those in favor of the motion Anna Marie Stevens aye term I hope I'm here for the whole thing thank you okay um which back the last thing here is our board member [Applause] because um every year required by Arizona statute governing board members in the state of Arizona are required to fill out a conflict of interest interest form that um anything that can occur illegally that they are away from them like if um hypothetically if Miss greasewood's daughter was doing business with the district she would have to step away with that because she has personally related to that person doing business with the district so at any point what they're going to do now is fill out these conflict of interest forms stating that they may have somebody here doing business with the districts and they will write that annotate that on the document if not they will just State no and sign it and then they'll be good for the next year and signing up the once those are completed I can get them after the meeting and if you're ready to go yes if you have no 2023-01-11 Navajo County, AZ YouTube / Blue Ridge Unified School District #32 transcript source: youtube BRUSD Regular Governing Board Meeting - Tuesday, January 10,… · passage 3
Dr Wright do you want to explain that yes sir after listening to the public feedback and taking into account the administration's perspective the choosing the best way is the abstinence approach and we felt this better fit perhaps for our community and again this is an opt-in if parents don't want their children taking any of it they don't have to they have to opt in meaning they must have permission prior and those that do not want to opt in will have next fall when this is initiated they'll have an alternative activity so that's the uh that's the request of the of the administration is to choose that program and will you seek board approval just my own question for information this was a program supported by Navajo County no sir that was a comprehensive one that's one comprehensive and we did not want a comprehensive program the administration felt that the the choosing the best way was sort of a middle ground and it was based more in abstinence and a slight I guess that was slightly favorable in the eyes of the public and all things considered that's our recommendation any questions or comments board all right so we have a motion to accept item 3.1 a motion from Chuck second from Diana all in favor at B unanimous okay item 3.2 recommendation to approve the IGA intergovernmental agreement [Music] from transit for transition from school to work this is with the the Department of Economic Security yes sir this is led by Mr Schimmel we've had this in place for several years and we're finding very good we have good results with it um this is Greg chimore this is Greg schimel yep he runs a program help getting kids transfer our transition from high school to work it's within our exceptional needs student population and we've had pretty good success with it and so it's our hope that we can continue on with board approval for this program can you go over the funding for this oops sorry can you review the funding yes um there's a um Grant through transition to work from Department of Economic Security that's part of what this agreement is about um and they fund that program does this part of Mr schimmel's salary come from that yes okay any other questions we have a motion then to accept item 3.2 a motion from Diana second for Margaret all in favor that against unanimous okay item 3.3 we have a superintendent's report Dr righty yes sir ready to talk to us for the next two hours yes sir there are good things that are happening a couple of cod Hot Topics or all the water breaks that you have water breaks so a couple of as a matter of announcement and just just to remind the community we have had a lot a significant number of trees taken out throughout the property at the as part of the forests the fire department's attempt to reduce forest fires and so part of that program is a fire chief will come in with their crew and these are the folks that are expert in how to reduce the spread of fire in the in the event that they it occurs they also will remove trees that have Beetle bark beetles and so all of that has been done it wasn't just something we decided to do for Aesthetics it was to preserve the forest and to keep it healthy and to follow the fire department's Direction on how to how to keep us safe so that that's one the next is we had a main water line we've had two leaks in 30 days the second one was most recently at the high school here and that was repaired and restored fairly quickly we had a sprinkler on a riser that is part of the fire suppression system at the elementary school that had a significant leak so we had to send our elementary kids home early today thankful with the help of thankfully the help of Transportation Administration we got the word out we got the kids home safely we're working on getting that fixer has it been repaired already Roger it's done and ready to go okay you have this very quick and so the we're working to get both of those items well both of those have been fixed I will say the focus here at the high school we can anticipate because of the infrastructure is 55 60 years old brez was more of a surprise because that's only a 15 year old facility we don't anticipate any more of those but when they come our rationale as this is we we must do what the fire department asks us to do in terms of safety and we always try to give parents as much lead time as is possible and so we understand the need to have those youngsters supervised and I come in the administration and also Roger and his team and working so fast and to get that corrected are there any questions on the two leaks especially that we had or any concern to that it was that it was in the it manifests itself I think in the playground area but Mr Grace has the location of the Riser and can talk about that it was a subsurface leak it started leaking underneath the ground and started pushing water out into the playground and what it was it was the line that runs into the Riser room that feeds our fire suppression system and so we had to cut the water to the fire suppression system in order to dig it up and find the leak so as soon as we got everybody off campus we were able to cut a water to it they dug it up found the leak and were able to start the repair on it and it turned out to be corroded bolts that were holding down uh a flange so those have been replaced and we're good to go I have a question about uh funding for take care of the repairs can we ask the state for reimbursements in this in that regard and for the regard of the the uh well our our infrastructure for plumbing is probably the old galvanized pipe that's going to be splitting for the next until it's all replaced is there any way we can Lobby them to get Monies to do that we have part we have a large project the last time we had it bid was is a dated bit of probably four years was 2.3 so we probably have an excess of four or five million dollars of problems that we have with the river that comes in front of the high school when it floods during the monsoon there's a lot Mr Walters informed me of all the wiring and the hodgepodge of stuff that is underneath that parking lot in this case is there for the fire Riser is there a building emergency Grant basis do we get any support with that or is that just a straight m o repair Roger okay and if we had damage we do have insurance as far as an infrastructure thing we'd have to have a bond or some other funds in order to redo that type of instructure I don't I don't think the state would do that however I will say this I will add this caveat with the new governor governor Hobbs there has been talk of significantly increasing the grants received to maintain our facilities recognizing we're receiving a fraction of what's needed we have approximately 000 square feet and we have about eight hundred thousand dollars to do that to maintain all of that plus by buses books computers all of those things it's it's a it's about a tenth of what we need but hopefully we're going to see some of that restored back the capital renewal the capital lawsuit that was initiated by Glendale which Blue Ridge was a part of in terms of witnessing on behalf of the percentage is that the one you have to testify if it goes to court that was when I scheduled testify was canceled and so the governor stepped in and said we have a new attorney general a new governor because of new Administration the court agreed to cancel that trial and so now the the state's back with uh is going to negotiate with the plaintiffs essentially all of the districts are going to be will benefit from that Glendale led the charge on that so A Long Way of explaining I think we're going to see some of that Capital funding come back and I do believe the new governor will keep the uh State Facility boards feed on the fire to get things to get things done and also the legislature to fund it because it doesn't matter how hard you push the sfb if the funds are inadequate to make the changes you know it's meaningless so I think a combination of those two over the next year and a half I think we'll see some relief generally we were fortunate to have had our school buses purchased in 2017 and the downside was the 17 that we purchased are all in the same year we will need some new buses and frankly we'll have to look at is 2023 at some time something that the board would be wanting to and open to looking at and override and 23 of some amount and some percentage we'll need to look at it I guess my early advice would be let's see what the new Administration does try to understand our resources first and then take it from there the uh along any other questions on facilities before I move on to another topic the discipline and we've had some issues at the high school the last 60 days we've been working on and they'll be assembly this Friday addressing bullying and attention when there are fights that breaking out kids are videoing it and the students need to understand everybody around that fight contributing to it will be held accountable and we're working hard to also Implement those programs that are already in place to enforce what's in place to make sure that we have a safe environment for all students we continue to crack down on vaping and marijuana we've had three expulsions this month because of it and we'll continue to Monitor and manage that closely and we we don't have a tolerance for that and we'll continue to take the appropriate action when encountered when students are just using the vaping that's an ongoing issue with every school our Administration is working hard to try to manage that and we're certainly not looking the other way any questions on those issues the VR Hall of achievement and we're going to launch very shortly it may have already launched in social media I haven't looked at I need to talk to Paul I'll get him on the counter this week but Our intention is to look back until 1963 forward and start recognizing be our graduates that have made exceptional contributions to their Community the state and the country we have a lot of them to be our family his wide and Broad I went to Switzerland around somebody that's a blue Hertz graduate so it's kind of cool I've got went to Hawaii and ran into the guy eggy was the kid's name and kid to me he's probably 35 running the boat he graduated from here so our our reach is is wide and we have a lot of incredible stories to tell we're going to try to do a better job at doing that in the upcoming year we'll start with a certain number and we'll continue on every year we also are going to have a recognition for the substitutes and volunteers we're going to have a lunch in the spring to recognize them and bring him in and thank them for the hard work that they're doing volunteers and substitute keep us keep everything rolling and we want to make sure that they feel valued and that we understand their contributions are important I don't have any anything else to share with the board unless there are any questions I can answer in these areas okay just just to thank you I know you're running 28 000 miles an hour some days and appreciate that and I'll let you do appreciate everybody in what you do the entire staff here and administration it's uh we wouldn't function without you and you're the top of the line appreciate everything that you do it's great okay next thing is item 3.4 a call to the public we'd invite individuals that would like to address the board to do that right now we'd ask you to limit your comments to about three minutes we'd like you to come to the pulpit state your name and given your address to Mrs Ford and uh just note that you can't see see that to anybody else but I appreciate hearing from you let you just adopted one thing it can I get an idea of how many kids are in your District how many students are in the district about 1750.

you quotes of the months students to prepare for a picture I would also like to mention that it is governing board appreciation month so if you can help me also give our governing board a great big round of applause foreign our board members on our website every week so um Mr mcgibbons it's your most seasoned board member we will feature you first okay so stay tuned so you can read about Mr maybe I've been first on our website next week keep going okay one two three minutes you take a minute break so well everybody memories um all right with that we will move on to our Student Services report brought to you by the 101 Stephen Lane thank you [Music] secretary welcome governing board uh Miss Rico asked me for to give a report over first semester and also in there to kind of cover the things that I do prepared a six hour presentation for you so I hope thank you enjoy it right okay six minutes we can do that um some of the goals that we had at the beginning of the year a lot of this presentation some of the board members have seen before Miss Rico asked me to kind of go over some of the um Ruth for you specifically since you join us halfway through the school year our goal is to have students who are ready to learn students who are respectful to adults and each other students who are happy to be at school teachers who are excited to be teaching the curriculum and teachers who spend minimal time on behavioral issues next slide what is PBIS PBIS is positive behavior interventions and support um PBIS is really designed to be proactive rather than reactive so instead of focusing on the bad behavior or the discipline issues rewarding the positive behavior which entices everyone to behave that way within our school rules PBS teaches routines and procedures to reduce the possibility of student misbehavior Continental School has three school rules that we really focus on so every single interaction that I have with students through the classroom we really focus on being kind safe and responsible as well as Mr Square boss throughout the day but also all of our teachers and all of our staff no matter what setting that you are within the school we really focus on all of the rules so if I'm in the classroom their roles are designed around being kind safe and responsible so everything in their classroom falls back to those three school rules if I'm in a school-wide assembly be kind safe and responsible falls back to those same school rules so whatever the rules are for that setting always fall back to the three game bees and so teaching expected behaviors you're okay cover that um it really goes back to I do we do you do setting that example we do that at the beginning of the school year so we actually in the first three days of school have assemblies in each one of the settings that I kind of talked about so walking on the sidewalks walking in the hallways what does that look like um what does it look like in the classroom what does it look like in a school at assembly we also go to the playgrounds in the cafeteria and we have the kids travel around and we have one of our great staff members located in each area and they cover the be kind safe and responsible for each one of those settings and so if that just helps with being consistent school-wide so that's why PBIS isn't just designed for one classroom it's a school-wide theory that works great all across the board next slide please acknowledgments all staff should demonstrate more positive interactions and negative interactions so this is you know seeing the good in people what they're doing and recognizing that the recommended ratio is a five to one in favor of positive interactions positive interactions include praise for students exhibiting um expected behaviors credits for academic success catching students doing the right thing instead of catching them doing not the right thing which sometimes is easier to do it's actually harder for most of our staff and it does take training time and practice to focus on the positive behavior and so we really focus on that in our staff trainings as well as just throughout the school year in our formal practice um and then of course we have regular school-wide celebration of positive behavior as you do you just watched this exhibit today with our quote of the month here at Continental School we have what's called coldbox it's a monetary system where if a student's caught being good any of our staff members have the ability to give them a quote book in which later on at the end of the month they have the opportunity to exchange that for a prize Paul passes from the Middle School we were having a issue about four years ago just before covid with students wanting to constantly go to the bathroom go to the bathroom and so we came up with this incentive to keep them in the classroom and so for the month each of our middle schoolers at the first of the month receives a card there's 14 little horses down there the card itself is the 15th punch and so we encourage them to use no to be out of the class no more than 15 times in a month during a class to go to the bathroom so what we were seeing is there was certain kids that would go every single period would ask the teacher to go to the bathroom because they don't know that they just went to the bathroom 10 minutes ago in the previous class and so what this did is really limited down on that and then with middle schoolers we realize that the little toys of trinkets weren't incentivizing them at all and so we've gotten gift cards to like McDonald's and we've gotten talkies and those sorts of things which have really taken off the last couple of years and I saw kiddo today when we were passing out the new cards that had like six of these cards saved up from last year and they're saving for bigger prizes because they can and they had all their punches for all of those in there which means they have missed zero time academic time going to the bathroom and they're doing it in the five minute transition that they have from class to class and that's exactly what it was designed to do so it's great to see that um talked a little bit about that because I've only been given six minutes we're gonna move on past that one okay cool Buck rewards we talked about that as well we've actually it says up there on the fourth Friday we've changed that to the fourth Wednesday because it works a little bit better for our parent volunteers that come in and that's our early release day and we find that when we give elementary kids Trinkets and toys that make noise sending them back to class for their teacher for the rest of the day a full school day doesn't load well so we send it home on early release Wednesdays through their parents okay um discipline correction system uh we will we will respond to problem behavior only in ways that maintain the safety well-being and dignity of the child a primary focus of responses for problem behavior um is the instruction of the expected Behavior so if there's something negative we teach the positive and so that's all of our staff does that um Miss paws our school counselor I'm going to talk about her a lot throughout my presentation today in Little Bits but kids that are really having a hard time and you know the repeated Behavior her and I will work together and and work with those students to teach the expected Behavior because a lot of times that's what's missing is they just don't know how to behave or they're focused more on getting the negative attention than the positive attention once you help them realize how awesome positive attention is they'll seek that more often um this is something that we hand out at the beginning of the school year um to all of our staff it's the disappointed procedural flow chart it just kind of helps our staff know what should be managed in the classroom or on the playground versus what should be sent to the office and it helps with that mandatory reporting stuff that we have to there's some things that we have to report to law enforcement there's some stuff we have to report to the Department of Education and so this procedural flow chart helps greatly with that um consequences typical consequences are a loss of part of recess for elementary students much attention for middle school students natural consequences should be used as much as possible such as cleaning up messes written apology making up this class time and reteaching expected behaviors we use what's called check-in checkout here often times when we have students that are really struggling with those repeated behaviors that I talked about earlier this is where Mrs Falls myself Mrs kravos and sometimes some of our other staff will help and will put a child where they'll have receive a piece of paper but it really depends on the kiddo because some don't want to carry a paper so because we have Chromebooks we've made an online version that they can have that and their teacher at the end of each period or the end of each subject if they're in elementary school has the ability to give them real data right there about how they did and it encourages the student reminds them um but in the beginning of the morning they'll meet with the person that's put over the checking checkout system and receive a pep talk you've got this you can do this yeah I know you can you're going to have a great day and it's all positive it's really focused on it's not you know yesterday you had x amount of marks and you can't do this because the reverse of that is you can totally do this focus on this if you get frustrated ask your teacher for a little break those types of things to encourage the child and then at the end of the day they'll meet with that same adult and they'll ask how did you do how did today go and that's intended to only usually we see it's beneficial in about six weeks is we'll see that change in that student and most times we can wean them off of that program of something new that we started a couple years ago I think now miss Rico I think about two years ago I was right in the middle of coven um where I went to a conference and learned a lot about restorative practices and we were really really interested in that because the typical was called the traditional consequences such as in-school suspension out of school suspension it's not really beneficial because a lot of kids now would rather be at home because Mom and Dad are both working and so they can be at home and play video games and watch TV and kids would ask me hey can you just suspend me um and so that's not what we want to do and so we've looked at some alternative ways to make a difference in their life of positive change so they can be contributing members of society and so the purpose of restorative practice is to help the students recognize the impact of their actions have had on others and instill the desire to change for the better restorative practices are designed to have a minimal impact on the students educational outcomes so that's really something that we really focus on a lot of those things that we have in our tool belt are restorative conferences this is where often if I have two students with conflict we'll bring them in together I'll talk to them except really find their stories and I help them find that common ground and get them to talk about it and almost almost without fail 99 of the time the students at the end recognize the other person's feelings and apologies flow freely and their shaking hands are even sometimes hugging and walking out holding hands going back to class and so that's the objective of a restorative conference restorative PowerPoints is something that we also use this works really well with our older students where let's say if I plagiarize I would do a PowerPoint presentation on the effects my actions have been and plagiarizing plagiarism and what that can do for me long term in the negative effect or positive effect however that works um whatever the assignment was or whatever the offense was off and so we do that a lot with our specifically our middle schoolers but we do have done this down to fourth grade I mean we found that that really really with some of our middle schoolers has changed their lives whether doing that research sitting down with myself Mr Curtis Mrs cuevos um and if the occasion permits uh Ryan England or SRO sometimes if it's on that boundary of the legal issues he'll sit down and help the kids look up state laws and stuff and and so they can see the long-term effects of their actions that it could have on their lives so super super beneficial altered school day we found that if you suspend a kid very rarely do they come back with their work completed we find that when you do in-school suspension their work only gets completed if one of our staff gives them full attention all day long which isn't always manageable and able to do to sit there with them obviously they're supervised so there's a difference between supervising and sitting next to them doing work all day so we've on the alternate school day works like this the student would check into the front office meet with me or Mrs Cuevas in the morning we'd have a conversation kind of have talk you can do this the teachers know that they'll be coming to the class we'll escort them to the class and then instead of transitioning with the other students they'll leave five minutes prior to the Bell they'll go to their next class so they're not transitioning with their peers and so they're not missing out on the classroom instruction at all and their work is being completed like it always would be and then during the recess time lunch time and the enrichment classes they're up here working with Deputy England Mr Curtis myself and they're doing one of the restorative PowerPoints for whatever they did for that but for those actions I mean so we've kind of combined those two and we find that that's way way better and way way more beneficial than in-school suspension or after school suspension checked and checked out I talked about already um and then Behavior contracts are all of you familiar with what a behavior contract I know we've talked about that before in the Years probably have written many in your life as well um one-on-one small group meetings with the counselor so that again this is one with Miss Paws where she will do a lot of that stuff for us so she'll meet with the students one-on-one I will also do that depending on the situation as well so I've got a group of kiddos that I'm currently working on with an anti-bullying campaign lessons and so you know those are just different things that we'll do in small groups or one-on-one you can be next slide one of the big things that I've supported that's in our reflection room we have on the wall is that ABCDs of fixing a problem a student needs to admit that they've done something wrong be sorry crack the problem and then the fourth one D don't do it again and so that's something that doesn't just work with kids but us as adults too right so it's one of those things a life lesson for them and it's super beneficial and easy for them to understand first semester disciplinary reports we're going to talk about numbers a little bit here the Continental staff is using Synergy to report in fractions that's our our database that the school uses for our grading systems for just about everything we do here is ran through Synergy our odrs is office discipline referrals um and then we have minor referrals so remember that flow chart that I talked about earlier if it was in the teacher handled column that would be in your minor and then if it comes over here to the odr that would be an office discipline referrals um so we have 71 total infractions are reported for K8 um I want to just put my little caveat here 781 seems low but remember that's incidences there could have been six kids involved in one incident right so that's just to be clear on that because I want to say total with students were up to like 168 but there's only actually 71 incidences but more than one child can be involved um 51 minors um 20 majors and then we have eight students that receive 12 days of in school suspension okay two students received five days of out of school and that's combined that's not two students receive five there's five days total issue but we leave it very big so that we can't identify who's who in the numbers um six students received 14 altered school days and you'll see this as a switch right before we did restorative practices we didn't have that option so this option right here with altered school day would have been landed up in here somewhere but because we have this ability if it's kind of in that gray area we have the ability to keep them in class and learning but still have consequences for their actions um and then 48 restorative practices presentations this is huge um and I'll be honest it's way bigger than I ever imagined and it's because we had a little bit of a computer hacking situation um happened right before um Christmas break we were able to identify the students that violated their technology use agreement and so we talked about what that looks like when you hack a firewall or anything like that to get around security systems and why they're there for their safety and so we had Mr Ferguson left the room and I want to say um 28 students did a PowerPoint presentation on that and then presented that to each other so they presented to their peers as well as staff okay so that gives an approximately 90 of our students are being kind safe and responsible so I know these numbers don't always look great but when you look at that we have 700 students um it just shy of 700 students on our campus we're doing very very well overall uh Miss Rico asked me also to talk about disciplinary repeated concerns things that we're really worried about here as Administration is its parent right because a lot of us even in the administration we have kiddos here on campus and things that are reoccurring that we're always talking to our staff and our students about um obviously if you saw from the numbers the first one would be minor classroom disruptions right they just get in the way of their learning so talking to your friend while the teacher is presenting those types of things foul language is a big thing all throughout our society today and it's a challenge constantly especially in our Middle School not as much in elementary school it exists a little bit there but it's it's a big problem in middle school and on our school buses we took action once again in first semester and we didn't like what we were seeing and hearing even on our we'd watch the video cameras and we would hear language that was not suitable to be spoken around five-year-olds that are also right in the same class and so we took our eighth graders that generally have the privilege we explained an assembly that it's a right to ride in the back of the bus and they lost that privilege for a quarter and were moved to the middle section and we're told that if their language improved they'd get a move back and they did get a move back at the beginning of this semester because we did see an improvement on their language and so we've we're doing things like that constantly just trying to protect the innocence of our little ones and keep the foul language out of our schools um racial slurs goes right with that we treat those the same um minor acts of aggression violation of Technology use agreement is one of those ones like I said we had that big incident um with lots and then harassment and continued bullying as well so those are kind of um this Rico asked me what would be those main things that I battle every day and that would be my my list the other thing that I as a director of student services along with Mrs Abel who's in the room with us today that we cover the Ells the English language Learners we have attended two conferences so far this year the first one is the hell meeting in September this resulted in some changes happen with Ells and so quite drastic changes seem to be always happening it's really hard it's always a moving Target when it comes to our ell students as far as what the expectation and the requirements from the state are so we adjusted students schedules to accommodating state requirements which required Mrs Eva moving some things around to make this schedule work for Mrs Abel so thank you so much for your patience and your dedication to the students and we know from last year that was a huge deal because it helped us get the a that we have from all the hard work and the time that you put in with those kiddos so thank you for your continued support and work in that area um then recently just in December we attended the OLS conference um that was at Star Pass um and so I miss Abel always has to drag me there because I get stuck in all the administrative ones where they just talk Jada in numbers for the entire State and she gets to go learn how to have fun and do really awesome cool activities with their students but we went and did that and that was a three-day conference here in Tucson that we invented uh School Safety and Security um as you all know this is like my bread butter I love school safety I think if a kid can't feel safe and comfortable in school then they can't learn to the best of their ability and so we have to continue to create an environment that is both safe and friendly and that's challenging to do sometimes drive people like oh fast we can lock down fences and guard towers and kids won't feel comfortable in that and so it's finding that balance where we keep them safe but they don't notice all the things that we have around them to keep them safe so some of the things that we've been working on this year is a threat assessment team we have created that team I know at the beginning of the board we just presented that I did to you um so we do have that team and we're really glad to now have a school psychologist that is a part of that team because that's a huge component that we were missing that we didn't have so once again thank you school board for approving that position that we were able to add that person to our team as well as all of your other duties and assignments as far as threat assessment adoption we've been looking into lots of different things we were kind of set on an Ohio method which was really good and then Pima County heard what we were doing and they're actually looking for a Pima County adoption so we've kind of Pumped the brakes a little bit Mr Fergus and I are part of a task force created by the sheriff for Pima County and we are meeting again this month to continue to look they were looking at the mosaic model which is based out of California which is kind of a commercialized model but it has some good data sharing and just last week we received an email that that is now tabled again because the Pima County Sheriff's Department is going to be working with Dustin Williams to specifically look at creating one that is a shared database within Pima County similar questions would be on that threat assessment um Mr Ferguson can you remind me what the name of the college that they're still in that the one that they're looking at Pima County right now Virginia's Tech the Virginia Tech model so there's several different models out there they're all very similar in questions and just to remind you what that threat assessment it's the look at what is the threat as far as a student to a school safety of a school and also to themselves and so this is how we reduce things like suicide this is how we reduce cutting this is how we reduce school shooting stabbings those sorts of things throughout education and so that's something that law enforcement and educators are starting to work together finally over all these years to try to create so if you want to learn more about that you're in the audience feel free to make an appointment we can talk all day long about that kind of stuff so um we also continue to Target Harmony by training and doing drills for the staff and students such as bus evacuations fire drills and lockdown drills and so we we're super proud of our transportation director just completed our first semester worth of drills right before we went on break for our bus evacuation all right now to the fun stuff first quarter Sports we had volleyball 39 athletes per second flag football we had 32 athletes which is almost double of what we had last year for football so we're really excited to see that growth in our football program cross country had 18 Athletes with a total of 89 athletes participating in the first quarter next slide um our accomplishments flag football received the sportsmanship award and the third place trophy um I know I presented this before before but you would have thought they won the Super Bowl uh because it's been a long drought if you will as far as our football team goes um where in the past five years they have only won three games total so to go from only winning three games in five years to winning six games and making it into tournament and then going and vegan some teams that they thought were unbeatable was quite the accomplishment for those boys and they were going crazy trying to throw water on us coaches and it was a really really good time so and then um to be able to not only show that that Improvement but be nominated by all the other teams and coaches as being the Sportsmans of that season that's pretty impressive to to show that um competitive Spirit but yeah be recognized for meetings and then cross country Mrs cooler was our head coach there and you're just to her and her athletes also received the sportsmanship award second quarter Sports we had boys basketball with 29 athletes girls soccer with 26 athletes cheerleaders with a record high ever at Continental School of 35 athletes and what was awesome about that is they all stayed so sometimes we'll see a big influx and then after a week or two of realizing that sports are hard and challenging a lot of them dwindle they were able to keep those numbers up that entire quarter which was fantastic and they were able to participate in some trades and as you saw some of our assemblies it was really great to have that um back here you know after a couple years ago and not feeling that Continental Spirit to have that so and then we ended up with a total of 90 athletes per second second quarter accomplishments girls soccer plays fourth in the tournament so they didn't make it to tournament Unfortunately they went against some really tough teams with Emily Gray uh Sarita and Anza Trail um but we were able to present there and at least challenge the other teams that we went against um boys basketball also received a sportsmanship award so we're super proud of them for their account and that she's over there hitting enter over and over again um that means we hit the end of my presentation I just want to again thank you all for your time um I didn't go quite six hours but a little over six minutes so um I appreciate it and I just I feel very very privileged to be able to work here with the staff that we work with our admin team our teachers um my word for the year is plus and it's not necessarily a plus but I know that what we've put in place we um Mr mcgiven you talked about um the rigor and I honestly feel like we're just starting to hit our stride into the rigor category and our plans and our roadmap take as far past that we're just getting on the road and I know that with the work that our superintendent or principal have done and all of our Specialists that we're just getting started as far as that goes um I'm not worried at all I can say this confidently I'm not worried at all about keeping our age because we barely got it and we all know in our hearts and in our minds okay we're better than that and we're just going to keep going um uphill so that's why my word for the year is Plus for the month that we need to recognize that we failed to get her up here so she is coming okay so sorry if you'd love me to deviate from our agenda [Music] thank you okay all right Preschool teachers write Bernadette is always doing what she should be doing and helps remind her classmates as well congratulations Bernadette foreign agenda and uh just somewhere else this is kind of where there's a oh a dozen or so different little minor items that we have proven pretty much all at once so then we can do discussion after we have two options foreign discussion Mrs no yes you asked him I had questions yes Mrs Allen yes as well new business section number a curriculum update [Music] who made our new board member Mrs Amadeus up to speed and our meteor check on curriculum we wanted to provide a curriculum update so our admin team everybody has a part so they will all come up to the front please so that you can be ready to present your heart thank you can go by yourself or is your team going to be teams no int presented by administrative team and curriculum support team they are yeah all right so we're gonna go over we'll start with Ela in our new curriculum for English language arts Benchmark Advance year one rollout currently grades K through fifth are are instructing with Benchmark events curriculum this curriculum is composed to reading comprehension fluency and what's super exciting writing standards we're very excited about that in the past Ela program we didn't come with the component component of writing which would start the foundations of writing from kindergarten all the way through and we're excited because it has this in this curriculum so we thank you for approving that for us social studies and science components are also intertwined within the curriculum they're not to replace the standards but they support the standards that are being taught that we need by this date teachers have had two in-person curriculum trainings with a great response our trainer her name is Ashley and she is amazing and we hope that we are able to bring her back soon she really answered a lot of questions for us and clarifying A lot of stuff especially once the Year got started and the teachers were diving into the new curriculum students are also responding well to the curriculum and are able to articulate their learning as you're starting to see if you ever have the opportunity to come and do Cult of the cold time walks we'd love to have you here because you can start seeing especially the writing components a lot of them will be talking about writing and how they're showing evidence the rigor is there and it's building and it's exciting to see and they're excited to talk about it so the magazines that come with the curriculum have been amazing because the students are also learning their note-taking their highlighting skills not that they're highlighting the whole page what key Concepts and ideas and our sixth to 8th graders are using collections that is their curriculum through helping us and hardcore and we also had a training as well an online training at the start of the school year so that was a good training I got to be part of that and learn even more about our Middle School curriculum with our ELA teachers and for dual language we have through our same curriculum Benchmark Advance we have Benchmark Valley London it is so for dual language our teachers have met to discuss how they'll intertwined Benchmark Adelante curriculum materials such as the reading magazines there's award cards and storybooks this curriculum is going to um it's the actual curriculum that's all in Spanish so we're working to modify and adjust and utilize all of the it comes with big books the cards for the alphabet so we're going to be utilizing a lot intertwining we're going to be continuing collaborative meetings so we can discuss a continued rollout of this as well and I think that's where to work it out with this virtual language dyslexia screenings so our the State of Arizona has mandated that we have dyslexia screeners but it's a little different than what we would what many of us thought to start we were picturing as teachers and staff and parents as we're starting to meet with some of our parents we thought that the dyslexia screener would be something when you hear it that the students might be reading it might maybe put different colors that's what I was visualizing on the screen because it was going to actually tell us if there was characteristics of Dyslexia maybe reading letters of backwards or certain things with the colorations of the letters on the screens or on the pages that's not what dyslexia screeners necessarily mean in the state of Arizona if it's found out through referrals and through testing later on that a child has a learning disability that is what dyslexia what they're referring to also as dyslexia so if a student were to end up getting an individualized education plan it would be something that is tied to any type of reading disability that they're having and it falls under the term dyslexia not what many of us might think right away when we hear the word dyslexia so this screening screener in the beginning when the state was talking about it many of us thought that it was going to actually screen and flag and tell us so we could let parents know that they might have to see go out and see further um evaluations outside and such what this screener does is it testing the child and what their reading ability is and it just tells us that they're at Benchmark for reading so then we continue to Monitor and look at data so amplify is the program that our district is utilizing they gave us a few programs that were state approved that we did have to choose amplify if any of you are familiar with dimples throughout the years in our education world it was that company and it's part of Amplified so teachers screen the whole class each each um now each quarter with each Benchmark and students who are flagged as below Benchmark for the reading comprehension portion of it are then taken by the teachers and one-on-one and they're individually tested so from Benchmark testing to Benchmark testing we see are those students once interventions are employed are those students showing growth if they're not showing growth that's red flags for us and data that we continue to collect so we can monitor and keep letting our parents know keep them apprised of what's going on and coming up with further plans and maybe further referrals for testing this is for grades kindergarten first second and third so we're already doing really great data work and monitoring our students now with maps testing which we'll talk about a little later but before we put into test kit kindergarteners and now we're starting able to see K12 with our Benchmark tests ahead of time we can catch red flags so we're not ending up with students who are falling between the cracks and the older grades and this is this is a component that's helping us with that so putting those interventions into place and then being able to um turn stuff over to our mtss team which is our multi-tiered system supports team so we can discuss with our teachers tier two and two or three interventions and again parents will be kept in the loop the whole time and then we have to update Ade three times a year with how many students are at Benchmark and what the growth has been [Music] so I'll turn it over to Mrs polay our math book tonight um we have used to revealed Mafia documented two years ago through our second year um overall all the teachers like it students like it some of them teachers some they don't um it has a lot of components that are put together the whole learning for for the students reveal that help the students become thinkers which is one of the parts that I like about this program um the students applied the habit of my problem solving and they also communicate effectively about math there's a lot of talking in the classrooms about math so um there's two components that I want to show later on the next slide that the students they just have a conversation if there's no wrong or right answer in both the teachers and the students like that part of the program 100 of the students are using the online when they teach the lessons and um heated for second grade students while interviewing math occasionally they're too little to be on online all the time they do the Readiness Diagnostics um at the beginning of the unit and they also use the math games the online games to practice whatever they learn um the day of the week or depending on how the teacher decides to do it third grade through eighth grade they um have increased the usage of the online program more than last year is getting a lot better with some work in progress um fourth through eighth grade are online only we don't have our puppy books so they have to log in they do log in in the classroom some of the tissues give online homework some of the teachers print out the homework it's again it's not it's a work in progress but I were getting there we are continuing training the teachers and the students on how to use the online program especially on assessments that's the hardest part for the teachers today and for the students too it's it's it's we're trying to make ends with transition because it's kind of far without the book just make copies when they need to and they work with a card copy along with a computer to answer the questions and the computer um breaks everything for the teachers um has also um activities to do before during and after each of the lessons it also has different assessment approaches the teachers don't use all the assessments they use whatever they think it's appropriate for the lesson we have the radius diagnostic most of the teachers are I'm going to say 100 of distribution housing tissues to know if the students are ready for that unit for the listeners if the students have some gaps that's when they can touch enjoy the richest sessions so this diagnostic helps them a lot in a lot of all the students use it um the middle school they don't have that Readiness diagnostic per se they have a different tool that they use so they cannot um visualize if the students are ready for the unit um um they also have um the exit tickets that's very popular among the teachers and the students this one also houses teachers uh see if the student understood the lesson of the day way before the unit lesson so they can Target close Concepts from Green Beach that way the students are ready for the end of the unit okay there are a lot more components than these on trivial math but these are the favorite of the tissues in the students um the one that I was talking about before they'll be curious and the number of routines those are the routines that the students have conversations among themselves and with the teachers about 6 7 minutes um activity of both the teachers and the students like those two activities exploring development is the actual lesson review map offers two ways to give the list and one is Hands-On and the other one is using the computer so sometimes when I if you walk in in the teacher's classroom and you don't see the tissue using the computers because most likely she's given the lesson using manipulative or just a direct a lesson not so much online the online version it's um hands on in a way because the students yeah um the students are interactive the students can go and play with the smart boards so some teachers rather do that it also depends on the lessons some lessons are not appropriate to do that because it's just harder it's better to use a manipulative so that's that's a good about rebuilding math at Yahoo's both options to teach it um the math replay is the favorite from from both the teachers and the students those are videos that um for every single lesson and that's middle school again it's a little bit different they do have videos but it's not called math replay there are videos that the teachers can show the students um after the lesson the students can see them on their computers at home they forgot how to utilize them they have access to that at home too um world map sections are math games Hands-On math games I I work with those I print them on how to call um Baker nominate them and then put it together here to the t-shirts I am on United 11 I think there's most of the grades have up to 12 or 13 units so I'm almost done with those and I just started kindergarten so that's that should be my my goal for this year to finish the whole the whole um um games um in the online games how the the separate of the students they love playing with the math games on the build map take another look in extension thinking are the differentiated components of reveal map check out a look has videos has a lot of extra worksheets and teachers use those for the reteach section um every day um the hours 30 minutes right 30 minutes period and the extended thinking is for the um um enrichment sessions I usually I meet with third fourth fifth grade students and I'm in the charts to start meeting with first and second break once a week and I work with those group of students using those and extended thinking activities foreign so for science and social studies our curriculum commission we decided to hold off on submitting an RFP which is request for proposals from science curriculum companies until next year we have a preferred time to review existing resources and further develop the possibility of cost kits I don't know if any of you are familiar with science plus kids both for elementary school they are kids that we would be working with TUSD because they have a program of cost kits that we rent they can deliver and they are based off of our state standards they come supply for each teacher in bins some of them are have life like animals but like crayfish snails meal worms but it's from kinder all the way through fifth grade so we're looking into that I started talking to the TUSD Science Center in regards to that there's many schools that you use it so we're looking into that some more and um K5 teachers are also exploring how to fit science not just into their daily schedules as many of them already do but to do it even more because we have lots of time that are set for math and reading that we have to meet Beyond textbooks is currently being used to teach science and social studies and they're also looking at the scope and sequence map calendar for those standards that they're teaching Newsela also has leveled passages that they're able to use for science and social studies content for our students as well and we may consider middle school science adoption first next school year foreign reading teacher um in September we had 23 students second graders um that were that had a red score of 150.3 um that I was seeing um I averaged them up and we had 31 great third graders that averaged 169.3 and these uh students received Title One Services written scores are um uh we can look at them and very quickly see whether or not they're at uh grade level and at 150 um to a 160 usually is where we want our kindergartners to be at the end of the year and so we did that these kids I needed some uh some big intervention um in um so I was working with them in a program called the Wilson Reading system and it's very structured and um systematic and so by the end of third grade at the end of October I decided to reassess my third graders and they just felt like they were sufficiently had progressed and we had and they had raised their scores up to 174.8 which um uh and so many of them were already at grade level so I then exited quite a few of them and um I ended up with um I think let's see 24 third graders at that time um after that um and I didn't feel like the second readers were ready for that assessment at the end of October so I kind of waited another month until I felt like they really had a good handle on things and um and so when I retested them the 23 second graders had a 168.9 so they had gone up um as an average I would have put ways up um so I I then we did all my groups again and so during the month of December um I I was seeing 15 second graders and they were averaging about 61.6 as I said my 24th third graders were 172.3 that was their new average as a group um and so um I I was I have been waiting to assess them um and so our next Benchmark is in a couple is next week I guess and so I'll be reassessing what their scores are and making determinations whether or not they're going to be retained with to see me or um if they're gonna go back into the uh regular classroom and and just receive um support where I'm just going to be pushing him um so let's see the upgrades will take the district writing test um in January like I said and um and their scores will be used to determine their eligibility um the Wilson Reading system is a program that that is being used we it is a part of the foundations program it's is the same umbrella and so the foundations is what we did with a K2 or K3 a couple years ago I taught um in a kindergarten for several years and then I went up to first grade when I was a first grade teacher so when I did the Wilson Reading system it was um uh targeted for those kids that needed intervention by the same parent program and it was a really easy slide for me to go in and I was so taken with it that I came in that weekend after I was trained and I spent the whole weekend making packets and making a program that would fit with it and so I have never seen so many kids that are extremely low readers that have actually made progress with any system better than this program so I'm really really pleased with it um so this semester I'm going to continue the support to support the KA teachers through coaching techniques and strategies within the classroom as well as uh looking at those extremely low students um and uh that's kind of where I'm at right now so thank you okay teacher of the Middle School um Avid has had a lot of things going on this first semester we had uh some classes create Avid add-ins in which they Incorporated their Avid skills of correct collaboration to show what is needed to make the community successful and if any of you are familiar with the AVID program a lot is teaching the kids to um have self-advocacy and to be able to work with each other which is super important as they go on into their academic careers other classes um they did uh they researched U.S college and universities of their choice they gathered the information they did the research and then they put it all together in an ugly College sweater um they were adorable they were adorable I the kids were all on task it was nice they were on their devices and they were actually doing the research so it was nice and I had the kids nobody could pick the same College within that classroom and there's five sections of that um and it was nice to see them explore outside of Arizona and then finally we had another class um that we were working on reading strategies um we started to read a series of short stories called The Run and it was about to it was about zombies so they were totally into it um it gave me a chance to work on vocabulary with those students as well as predicting main idea um during the second semester we will stay the course and focus on our weaker components and tutorials will be implemented during the class time to give students um extra help that they may need without having to stay after school if for some reason they cannot stay more in the in-depth research of colleges and universities will be completed hopefully we will end the semester with a campus visit to one of our state universities foreign [Music] so right now special education support currently have a 91 preschool to eighth grade special education students as of January 9th this doesn't include students who are newly enrolled or are within that initial evaluation process by February 2023 is projected to be closer to 96 special education students three full-time teachers is what we currently have one full-time speech pathologist and board contract tracks for related services for otpt and asdb which is our Arizona school reports 11 programmatic assistance is what we currently have here on our campus and there will be one opening as of January 13th special education support team has worked diligently to incorporate the following data to support the determination of present levels of academic achievement and functional performance for all special education students NWA assessments Baseline data for fall progress monitoring for winter and spring the special education director has pulled the NWA data for special education students to mirror the individual grade level data digs that we have to support service coordinators with determining further supports for the student that they are serving and towards their individualized education plan goals I itself also being utilized as a baseline assessment in progress monitoring through analytics from there we are also utilizing curriculum-based measures reveal math and the special education materials through rivoma teacher observations and classroom more examples um I'm Lena Zabo and I am the ell teacher and so far this year um it's been exciting um to get to know my students and it's been exciting to work with Mr Lincoln a little more closely because there had been a lot of changes with the ell program there are still more to come but we take them in small strides to try to get the appropriate adjustments that we need to make as they're coming up and as we're able to also make sure that we roll them out um the program is committed to providing our English language Learners with high quality education for Success that includes high expectations for our El student achievement the district is currently implementing one of its research-based structured immersion SCI models which for us it is the pull out model so we were given a selection of different models that could be applied to the school and based on our school population and our conversations with our administrators it was determined that the pull out SCI model was the best model for us which means that we collaborate both with the teachers in the classroom as well as me going to the kids and pulling them out of their classroom and working with me so it's going into both sets of classrooms um Continental also provides instruction by highly qualified teachers using appropriate instructional materials and teaching strategies in the students individual Home Room our collaborative environment provides the ability to create the English language lessons that enhance the students English proficiency and skills needed um to access the grade level content so what we like about this model is that it gives us the opportunity to be able to work with teachers to collaborate come up with the activities come up with the lessons that are going to benefit the students and then I take what it is in conversations that we have with the teachers I take that back and then I try to accommodate that and also work on implementing materials that also complement their learning ability for example with Mrs romanelli and title we have students that we work with that are actually crossed that crossover and we work together to be able to address some of the learning maybe um the the learning gaps that might be there that we both team up we collaborate once again come up with lessons and Target the students with their reading with their writing so we focus in and hone in on that particular section also um with the little ones for example with Mrs tesso she is a classroom teacher where as I said before we push in so I'm with Mrs Tessa every day of the week I have small groups that I work with in her classroom we have about six kids and so I work individually with them and then I also pull them from their classroom and they come to work with me twice a day and so when I'm talking about pulling the students there are very specific and designated times that we do that so that I don't interrupt too much of the um the homeroom activities that they're working on whether it's the reading and or the math so we try to coordinate opportunities where we work with them in the classroom and if it's during reading and math I'm in the classroom with them but if it's not then they're pulled out and they work with me so um with the program there are different levels that the students achieve one of the big ones for us is once a student has um reached based on the sellout the level of proficiency the student is then exited from the program but that doesn't mean that the students are forgotten because then for two years in a row we have to monitor the students learning so what that means is that I still monitor the students I still work with the students and mainly the home of teachers to make sure that they're still gaining and they're still learning and they're still able to access the curriculum should there be a concern then we go back to the drawing board and we re-evaluate where the students are at what might be the deficit and then we go from there there are approximately 28 active students in our program right now um they range from grades K all the way through right this is the first year that I don't have um sixth graders but in kindergarten there are six um students and the uh if they're at basic and intermediate and so the proficiency levels for Rosella are either pre-emergent emergent basic or intermediate and the reason they say that they they flip back and forth because there could be a student that's a compilation of two but in Kinder like I said there are six students with basic and intermediate proficiency levels first grade two students at pre-emergent one student at basic six at intermediate second grade two students at basic three at intermediate third we have two at basic four we have one at pre-emergent fifth two students that basic uh seventh grade two at intermediate eighth grade one student at intermediate and when we're working with the teachers and looking at lessons or activities to be able to help the students I have to look at all of the grade levels and I have to look at each individual student and be able to come up with lessons activities that complement their learning ability to make sure that they're able to rise to the next level and make gains so the collaboration that I do with the teachers is highly important and that's one of the reasons that once again we chose the model that we have because it allows us to have more communication it's wonderful when the teachers are open to being able to work with me and check back in with me and communicate back and forth what it is that the students need because in the end this is for the kids it's not for me it is for the kids to make sure that they get what they need to get um in addition I have seven students that are currently being monitored so that just goes back to what I was saying um before that if they happen to get proficient status then I go back and I monitor those students and then once they graduate from the second year there's a whole new set that comes in um the emo curriculum is enhanced by centilla Spotlight wonders epic rape works but also with Mrs romanelli we also use um Wilson um the reassessment window for us is coming up which means at our end of the year testing is mid-year not at the end of the year as we would expect some of the other um test the state tests to happen so right here it says that a reassessment window actually is going to begin today what that means is there are certain classes and tests that I have to take to be able to qualify to give the students the tests that they need so that for me and my team will start on the 10th the 30th is the window where the azella testing starts and it goes all the way through the 17th but given the fact that we have holidays we have break we have to be very creative with our schedule to make sure that I get in and test all of the students that I have to test so overall if we look at the 28 students plus the seventh it gives us a number about 35 students that have something to do with the ell program but 28 active students that I see so in a nutshell that's E11 thank you thank you and so um if you're this is my own site let's make it is our um assessment database in our warehouses what what we what what we use it for is to kind of organize our data that's collected from State Testing from nwe a-testing um and now from the the testing that that we're developing through a an application remote conservative um that we can access it through pre-link as a test taker um that data will also be um kind of collected here but um using using linkage and that's that's really what this slide is about but like it's using Lincoln's test uh design tools we've created test banks for all great levels with the except ion eighth grade um uh the test Banks include tests that Target specific mass standards that are aligned with Beyond textbooks calendar um that's these are the standards for for the entire year um and the the individuals who've made these tests are standing up here so um we we only have two more grade levels to go and then we'll have um we'll have an assessment for every math standard for every grade level that's um standardized within our school district teachers will be able to use those tests to identify which students would Master the targeted standards at the end of each unit teachers will be able to use this information to help with the re-teach and enrichment process so if you think of the the data that's collected and stored within link it um the the Arizona state test is the um it is is the yearly assessment right the nwea think of those as uh they're done portable you have you have your um Baseline um but they're quarterly assessments so what what do you do in between how do you differentiate and how do you you build a group your students so that you can Target those students who really need um really need to be re-taught um and this uh this Tool uh within Lincoln's test taking design features is how we'll talk about it that's it and for NWA Maps assessment those are reportedly benchmarks the areas tested are reading and Mathematics those are grades k through eight then language usage is the conventions of writing but they're tested on that's week second through eight and this Benchmark we've added on to science so we'll get to start seeing where students are active science which will also be a big help for us moving forward with curriculum that we're also going to be looking for and that'll be third through eighth graders who are tested so we're excited to see what the data will the outcomes and data will look like once they're done with testing these next two weeks the growth data outcomes are studied and analyzed by our teachers and all of us here on our leadership team in data dick meetings we are still building our data room which we've started and in fact tomorrow we're going to be working with our Kinder first and second grade teachers to go over some data with them as well they're helping build the data room walls interventions and academic monitoring as well as the mtss referrals are made based on the outcomes that we see from our benchmarks when our testing window is January 16th through the 27th and then student reports of testing outcomes are placed into the student's data binders which you have to see in our um e-binder that our middle schoolers have they have been working with showing them how to access that so what we're going to be working on in the coming weeks is how all of our students have a little app on the bottom of their screen so parents this has been how you know we'll put that in our next weekly to home to our newsletter to our parents monthly newsletter is they click on it and it's a Lincoln app and it opens up all of their data for you to see where they're at and our students are excited to share with us when we do our walks what their goals are and how they're trying to beat them just real quick on IXL just wanted to share um how much learning is happening so you can see the report there where the skills on the right hand side where students have mastered and are proficient in and are practicing we do have we did find out from the report that 80 percent of IXL is happening at home and 82 percent is happening at school and so when I excel first came out a couple years ago we definitely and during covet we're really pushing IXL and it's showing that 77 of teacher engagement I excel we really have to work at maximizing the program because it is a diagnostic where it'll Place students at their level so that students are closing the achievement Gap at home while they're working on IXL and in school as well so we don't want IXL to replace what teachers are doing at school I know a lot of teachers are assigning homework work and additional practice but I know a lot of our students say oh we don't like it but you can practice all content reading math science social studies kids are in dual language have access to the Spanish I excel as well I know what our students what's also really pretty cool that we love is that when they take it links to the NWA Benchmark testing so wherever our students are falling with their benchmarks it ends up being their profile or dashboard is unique to the needs and the areas that that they need to work on and um reteaching Rich we talked a little bit about that or Elementary the focus is mathematics that occurs daily except for Wednesdays and that's them looking at the math standards and the Concerta formative assessments so that Mr Ferguson was talking about they are able to utilize those weeklies to see are they getting the standard that's being taught and rather than just moving on and not knowing so that's what the read teach and enriches and for Middle School it occurs the first and third Wednesday of the month and that's in all subject areas right now the teachers are working with their students having interventions in each subject area of the class gifted education elementary students are instructed by Mrs romanelli and are currently working on Steam academics and projects middle school students are instructed on Thursdays by myself during sixth period they're currently working on building a future city that revolves around climate change and they're really excited because we've started to work on a kind of action to bring back our Greenhouse cold time as we've discussed it occurs monthly and that's where they present their student growth and work that they're excited about to their peers to their teachers and site leadership foreign [Music] have to have laser focus that Mr Nathan is part of this curriculum team as well but since he already presented I figured I would spare him a slide and talking time but I mean these folks are truly dedicated to closing the achievement Gap and also have to elevate and up their game and I know sometimes they think I have crazy ideas but we all push each other to be better and so thank you all foreign conflict of interest disclosure which is due back to the county so the children out appropriately okay I duly noted District Financial reports all right so the district went afterwards about 95 Pages if you'd like we can go over it please please yes please tune in yeah I appreciate it um within the district Financial award um one of the things I kind of wanted to tap on is 1526 which is our tax credit accounts um we do have some extracurricular activities that have not had any activity within the last couple of years so those have been shown to miss Rico Ms Rico will be taking those from our site Council which is which is our parent art advisory committee and within that the parent advisory committee will help determine how those funds are going to be split up do they need to go evenly throughout the rest of the clubs do they go to the designated tax credit account so there will be some movement um your your Finance report is pretty high level you're not going to see that other than that I will open up to any questions y'all may have um how's your tax credit account making payments supposed to uh for these years um right now there's about 250 000 sitting in a minute tax credit account um that is not including the 60 tax credits I've received uh since we've gone on break um like times I came in during the break I put in roughly 40 tax credits and since we've come back on Monday and put in another 25.

honestly we know but like I said I'm going to emphasize again we are still accepting applications well I'm excited to hear the uh outcome after all this too to hear the feedback so thank you yeah I I just want to say great job great job and great job by you Sandy board member help driving this initiative and I always want to you always in my eyes going to be called officer green okay okay I can't get away from that great job and I do want to engage myself as much as possible I know you guys have the mentoring program a lot of meetings during the day which is hard and difficult for me to attend but I definitely want to engage myself both on the business side and as well as some type of board mentoring a mentor in some capacity and just a spectator looking at it from a high level the balcony too so you may get tired of seeing me so you better better be careful what you ask for you just may get it so thank you thank you superintendent and all other board members has been involved with this I know Janine probably had a little part of it too as well so thank you appreciate it yeah we're really looking forward to this and don't forget we'll be doing the ladies next so this is our first one yes okay I hope you all do us a good job with the ladies as you're doing better better no no seriously thank you all for all you do I'm looking forward to being there I know you're going to do great things another coach over here had my son his arms crying his shoulder popped out [Laughter] I still wanted to wrestle excellent It's just posted everywhere so the kids can't see uh at the middle school and at the high school so and as well as in the community so recently we were just we just had a meeting actually this afternoon uh so different uh representatives from the communities they're also going to post them in the uh communities just to make sure that everyone's aware but yes and also the Administration has been sending out School reach opportunities and uh making sure that the work is getting out as well same day right registered no but we are the deadline says on the flyer Wednesday but we are gonna still accept we're just really trying to get you know Wednesday like tomorrow but we do have Flyers we've got them at the office Mr Franklin will be Distributing them as well but we have extra Flyers at our office if anyone would like to know some people to share with anyway thanks gentlemen for coming out tonight I appreciate it thank you I'll be the first to clap [Applause] it's on their agenda more exciting you news here uh Mr kaneki you want to come on up our athletic director he's going to be sharing with us again this momentum to continue to unify our district very focused one message and we've got a lot of talented people here as you see that are really helping to accomplish the work so I'm going to let Mr kanicki talk a little bit about the projects that they have been working on or at the middle school yeah absolutely uh thank you very much for having me out appreciate it because it's very nice to see everyone um here to speak tonight specifically about changing the mascot name at the middle school um and we went about and we we asked these students there sixth seventh and 8th graders if they would be interested in changing uh the mascot from the Comets to the Warriors and an overwhelming majority uh 66 percent of the students Set uh 100 that they would like to change the mascot from the Comets at the middle school to the to the Warriors and this wasn't done um you know without input from students and this wasn't done with a lot of forethought and one of the larger things was from the messaging standpoint we wanted to get the six seven eight nine through 12 Continuum under the same sorry Banner as far as our you know our our mask I was concerned but furthermore uh from a from a fiscal standpoint we have things at the high school that we no longer use uh old basketball chairs that have warriors on them or we've already since uh sent a scores table over from the high school to the middle school that says warriors on it and it was just for me it was one of those things where it just made sense for me from a you know fiscal standpoint where we can just then continue to hand those things down and they can continue to be used throughout the life cycle um if anybody's ever been in charge of a program uh you know I buy a set of jerseys and my thought process is I'm gonna get nine years out of those jerseys so they'll get three years in Varsity three years with their JV the same thought process came through when it came to our our branding as far as our mask I was concerned at the middle school so uh we did ask our students and again they they responded and they've overwhelmingly uh asked that we've changed that mask out or in favor of change that mascot to the Warriors wow how was the admin and teachers and stuff were they so yeah the the admin is uh aware of it and I think it was more of they wanted to ensure that you know all you know parties especially the kids were involved in the process uh so we're not gonna you know obviously it's not going to be a tomorrow change it was our thought process means we're gonna have to roll this out slowly um so we're currently uh with my you know counterpart at the middle school working on you know working to get the Middle School teachers some Warrior gear um so that they we can you know for those and you can't you don't have to get rid of the comic gear you can continue to wear that but it would be a slow progression uh to you know moving to you know throughout this year and then ultimately you know switched in the 23 24 calendar year coach is that a common thing for the Middle School to line up with the high school when it comes to sports and naming and logos and mascots and all of that when other school districts have similar well where are you you're in a district right so when you look at similar unit districts and I can speak to you know some very large districts and you know just right across the border wherever you go everybody knows that they're going to be you know going to this particular school all the way to come down to their their logos and mascots that are found with that within the uh the school Community uh our thought process was again that we would we would move that we were all all Warriors and that way we're moving to uh the Continuum that everybody was under the same auspice as far as you know the logo or mascot was concerned okay and you're going to find out a little bit later from a recruiter is how this Warriors messaging is going to uh permeate our messaging out for Recruitment and Retention so I won't give that away but uh there is a connection with all of us and then and ultimately you know in the position that I'm in you know we want to continue to make sure that we're in addition to this there's a lot of other fantastic things to work on including adding more offerings for students at the middle school making sure that our coaches are working from the high school with the students in the middle school so that we can continue to uh recruit and attract you know you know our students from the Middle School into the high school and continue to ensure that we're we're keeping our students in our school district has there been any type of issues with the name Warriors given the fact that that has been a negative connotation with people of different ethnicity like you know you've got the Illini you get the Redskins the Warriors in and of itself has not been a problem you see it I'm not sure okay and honestly when it becomes a very nondescript uh sort of idea of a warrior and you know so I know that you know there hasn't been any issues it hasn't okay I just don't one you know if there's anything been told to you guys the board I'm sure would like to know not saying it it is a problem maybe I'm talking apples and oranges here or whatever but I thought at one time there was some relevancy with this with our mascot being a warrior Indian is okay yeah but it's indicative of Indian right I wouldn't go it to strength and courage right okay yeah School me here that's what I'm just I just those are all again I'm being very neutral here I'm not sure you know I just don't want we invest and make sure we just cover it here yeah no so we obviously we you know everybody wants to be as sensitive as possible sure when it comes to The Branding as far as your mascots are concerned at this particular point in time um you'll feel very confident to say that you know the messaging that we've went forward with is extremely neutral and as no uh connection to anything except for a generic Warrior that you know might have at some point in time participated in any number of things throughout the history of the universe okay great the consistency is good because you're right going from eighth grade to high school we are losing kids one way or some you know to Brother Rice or to Montini or to Providence or to wherever so it is good to meet kid consistency and he and sharp bringing them together if they're going to come together in sixth grade bring them all the way through the high school right it helps us as coaches at the high school level and and throughout the state it's nice to be part of of that you know that you're part of the the entire School community and you're you're you're you're a warrior as opposed to being you know which is a fantastic mascot logo but now you're a warrior at starting the middle school and you're working your way all through the all the way through the high school yeah they have a goal like they you know they'll set themselves a goal I want to do this when I get to high school and thanks yeah yeah I'd heard teachers that were all for it too um prior to this discussion even happening a while back and I think it's great for the kids I think since we are getting into the middle school and and really being inclusive with them with the sports so that they are feeding into the high school probably gives them an excitement to be called a warrior so I I think it's a great idea I'm happy to see it done so thanks well thank you very much thanks Mr kaneki for sharing that tonight go Warriors yeah there you go so now enough of the fun stuff we're going to go right into business before pleasure so I don't know uh Mr surma Sure good evening board um Dr Cara um first item on the agenda is discussion of purchasing the property at 690 West Exchange in Crete I think as everyone knows this is the property where we have moved our administrative offices uh temporarily due to the asbestos of pavement and uh remodeling that we're doing in our offices here so we're over there so there has been some discussion about the possibility of purchasing that building I have attached into the documents for the board the recent appraisal that was done for that building that appraisal is at 750 000 it came in there so in conversations that I have had with the president of the bank you know he said he cannot take a loss he's not looking to make any more on it but he can't take the loss of that he's got a uh get what it's been appraised for so uh but we were looking at at one point about 680 000 somewhere about that that was based on an estimate that or an appraisal that was done in 2018.

all right look Financial summaries if you want to work it through that Chris and tell us yeah did you get anything on there with Mike with those okay so that's payroll all right so end of the month of December balances which actually equates to our end of the year balances just kind of outlines uh where we're at with that a couple things to focus on obviously we focus on our education and operation funds at the end of the calendar year of our education fund balance sits at 9.3 million and our operation fund balance it's at 7 million and so um that's good those things are obviously in a trending in the right direction and our healthy for the end of the year and so you can see all of that said and done total amount of cash at the end of 2022 sits roughly at 20 million dollars and obviously those come from all kinds of different funds and you know every fund has its own special rules and regulations uh because some of them are State funds some of them are federal funds some of them are local funds so they just all have their different like said set of rules and things that you can totally buy out of and and so forth so that's where we sit uh right now at the end of 2022.

and this is to give an overview of our fiscal year 24th budget and this will be over soon the last is a meeting with the Berlin finance committee that's on Wednesday February 8th at 7 30 and this is to review the school year 24 budget I'm waiting for confirmation but I'm I believe this is an in-person meeting those are the changes to the budget timeline so I quickly wanted to go over the fiscal year 23 budget so in your packet you'll find the fiscal year 23 year-to-date update it is at the top of it you'll see that it's shown for the entire school district and then it's broken out by school so in a brief overview I just want to let you know we're in a good financial position for the school year at this point in time as you are reviewing these figures in mind that we have several line items that are not in Congress so therefore the budget balance is always a changing number some items that we don't cover are repairs supplies conferences memberships professional development I.T substitutes and there's more much of the savings that we currently have are from our fixed charges which is our health care and our benefits typically these savings are from new hires who did not elect their benefits these amounts can fluctuate throughout the year with new hires and unexpected costs with unemployment we are also forecasted to have savings with special education transportation this line item is budgeted a year in advance and at times it can be difficult as movement and education is very common also the prior Director of Finance prepaid Transportation line items last year which freed up some of these funds lastly we have savings and positions where we haven't been able to find anyone to fill these positions or we have had new hires come in at a lower salary level than budget overall these savings most likely will not close the budget of substantial savings as these funds will help line items that are forecasted to be going over such as our increasing electricity rates repairs and repair store buildings does anyone have any questions on that part of the update oh no I also wanted the committee to be aware that I am still holding the November and December invoices for nrt so they did send me a revision um but I actually sent it back to them that I didn't feel that they gave us a adequate discount for the amount of buses that we have insured I have been keeping track of the days so I sent it back to them so we've been going back and forth but I just wanted to let you know that it's kind of been the worst and it still hasn't been it isn't humbered in the figures the full amount in what you might have seen and just a quick update on Transportation in general before parade in our last meeting I was hopeful that we were going to have a driver for Berlin bus three and unfortunately that didn't happen um nrt is still feeling hopeful hopeful that will the driver will have his or his license by the end of the month um I released the where is my kids app this past Friday I don't think the app is perfect but I think it will help families will need our district code and their student ID to sign up the district code was sent out in our newsletter and by a different email that was sent out yesterday a parent can receive the child's student ID from the school directly and then the Middle School in high school the student ID is the same as the lunch idea so that's something to keep in mind but that's not the case in elementary schools and somebody have any questions on that I'm curious to do the prior app you've had to have student ID as well with that number be the same if you were here I'm I'm quite certain that the student ID stays with you throughout your enrollment in school right yeah okay one of the other things that I wanted to briefly mention is in athletics I believe most of us are aware as to what has recently occurred in the professional football World this past couple of weeks it has proven what we already know which is that aeds are extremely important and they save lives I just want the school committee to know that I spoke to our athletic director and I confirmed that our school district has five portable aeds the aeds are brought to all of our home games in there and if there's an off-site game it's provided by the off-site school and if they aren't able to provide one we have one to put all of our coaches are CPR certified in their trained using aeds at this point in time we only have an athletic trainer at playoff games as this is what is required this is how I heard a discussion of the possibility of having us have to hire a full-time athletic trainer I'll keep you update is that discussion continues throughout the MIAA yes there was some discussion of the athletic director also being trained as well trainer yeah oh okay I don't know I mentioned that previously I wasn't sure there was talk within the school or talked with no in a previous meeting when we were okay you know or maybe not yes no I'm saying is there any discussion of like maybe including it within when their training or providing money to support veterans great um I just wanted to say on behalf of the athletic Community which I'm very much a part of thank you for checking into that um because I know that the parents on the sidelines especially with you know with cell service it is kind of nervous emergency um getting the medical personnel out there is Speedy time [Music] thank you very much curious her after school sports I assume the office gets a lot at some point like it would back in the day there'd be a public phone that you could run up and dial 9-1-1 I wonder if it's a similar something could be put by you know by the front entrance in all schools that you could physically guideline with one without access to really read my mind yeah I think something says that probably should be put outside of the school building because you need a key to enter the school building so if there is an emergency like a Paramore to run up I think it'd be more helpful if it was outside of building but the field is so far at that baseball field isn't it and there was an accident there like last it was last spring I think we talked about this and I thank God there was like a doctor and a nurse there right two kids collided to have concussion and somebody ran to the road to die online right um but there were like First Responders or whatever on site thank God but I mean like if you're gonna do it outside of school I mean that field it's pretty far right yeah right the telephone lines that run along the road so I wonder if the Public's public phones or anything of the past I know I I just think we got to get cell service for this school I just think I think huge I mean another thing we talked about too I I know it was like last year when we talked about you know active Shooters and we had that presentation by the police departments it's just so scary to think you know if something happened and you know you can't dial from your phone so um have repeaters but I mentioned but however Peter's been about to be looked into yeah there's a whole thing if they do that then they're out of a violation code for allowing kids to access it's a whole break yeah Paul's not here he's yes repeaters we did that was the very first thing we brought up like last year and like bring us out to the schools and creating that cellular networks we'd have to pay a fine because we're out of some code yes the school will be creating a network it would be an open network it wouldn't be blocked so the kids could access anything they could be on their phones all day versus if we just have a cell tower the liability Falls outside of the school so we could do it but I think that the fee it was like 40 it was like 40 Grand was expensive it comes like thousands of dollars Paul said just opened up it opens up liabilities too like if something happened versus if there's a cell tower I don't know not on the cells not on cellular service I think they have it on the internet are they available then it's right there yeah I mean it's just great Nancy that you know I've been in the district for a long time football player right um but still it is great thank you I had one more time so I just wanted to update everyone in the Boylston facility assessment so recently the office of Inspector General changed the requirements under 30p for school districts so it now says that we can school us that write you quotes for supplies and services estimated between ten thousand and a hundred thousand so it was previously fifty thousand so due to this change we don't have to go back up for bid um I spoke to Dan our facility director and he is working on getting us three quotes for this project so hopefully this will speed around a little bit faster that's to do the facility assessment now I am done well no I'm not a preschool teacher to discuss um so Janelle and I want to talk about bringing on um 0.5 an additional 0.50 preschool teacher for Berlin um do you want to sure take it from here okay yeah so we submitted a report um and we are requesting um to increase the current Berlin Memorial preschool teacher is currently of 45 halftime position our request is to increase that to a full-time position um we started off this school year with our preschool team with our halftime preschool teacher um on a on a leave um and then we learned later that she wasn't going to return so we've had a long-term substitute in position in that position all school year we've had the position posted is 0.5 we have not had any success in attracting 1.5 or halftime in person feedback that we've received is that um well it's a lovely School District left work here there are opportunities that are full-time and that's what folks are looking for so we feel like if we had the position at full time and be able to post it for that um we would be able to draw a more and more experiencing qualified candidates in addition because this is a very busy time for preschool um our referrals and evaluations for special education services at the preschool level um we are now projecting that we are actually going to need that additional preschool program in the afternoon and a full-time teacher would provide us so both of these things have sort of come up within the same two-week period so that is those are sort of two reasons um why we would like that and we would like to be able to open up and we may very well need to open up that afternoon the reasonable program in Berlin um this school year whether it's late winter or early spring I don't quite have that timeline there's a lot of moving Parts across with special education but we know it takes time to host the position find a qualified candidate and come into place Etc um and then open up that afternoon Peru school program for for students and families that they're interested in signing up for part of the current hours of the preschool now so um I believe the morning preschool runs about and I'm looking at John 2.

Thursday Friday and Saturday yeah because originally we didn't know if we would be able to do Thursday um also for ongoing and Sean to point out that uh we had a meeting with Mr Daniels Mr Case Dr karbal Mr pimpo Bella and I and we're talking about like the clubs we just mentioned uh speaker yeah we think that for the next three meetings we might have one speaker from each individual Club just so you all can like learn more about what we're doing in this school because when we were telling Mr Daniels about all the clubs he was really excited and like he didn't realize how many clubs there were so we might start talking about like all the different activities and like community service things we do at the school so really impressive and that's what the board wants to hear because we've got so many impressive students and clubs that you guys are are doing or just so um so so wonderful we want to hear more about it thank you is that the report yes you read the poor Bella small thank you so um the board knows you guys are starting to get moving on the um on your mascot right or The Branding it's one of the other so anything I I know we just met on it but anything to report on that yet no I think it's just well yeah now I think as of right now this really um is lying on Mr hippo you know scheduling the assembly for the school sometime in January I think the 27th is the date they're thinking of like you know just like laying out all the information everyone of how you know suggestions for the mascot will work and you know guidelines and whatnot so I think that's the plan between him and well yeah and we definitely I think is like a student body you have like from what we've heard of like uh realized that a mascot is really important to our community so when students have something to connect with or like represent at sporting events and other things so I think people are really excited to try to figure out something that we can have okay okay so I know you guys have to get to rehearsal or something like that right so thank you for joining us tonight good luck okay Mr case I just want to congratulate um Bella before you leave for being one of the uh musicians that will be singing in the choir this weekend yeah right so um all of you have a sheet in your package um we want to congrat congratulate the following musicians who will be playing in the Connecticut music educators Association Northern Regional Music Festival this upcoming weekend so in two days they're going to practice and perform a fabulous concert this weekend so the names of the students are listed Grace Asmar Nicholas markinen Lauren marzey Kaylee trainer and Bella so thank you so much so this is this weekend you know um you have the sheet in your packet everybody the rehearse Friday afternoon and Saturday and perform a concert in two days so that's this weekend the 13th and 14th congratulations and let's see this is going to be is it at um it's at New Britain High School oh okay I know it was independent I didn't know about Central Connecticut yeah that'll be I think at three o'clock it is and I think to get tickets if you wanted you would buy those on the cmea website that would be like a part of a visit page I think for it if you were interested in putting out the tickets for that but yeah so if any board members interested let Claudia know and we'll work on getting you tickets for that well thank you thanks Bill thanks thank you both so much okay so uh good evening everybody it's great to see all of you I know it's January 10th but I think we can still say Happy New Year I like to say happy new year throughout the month of January uh but some people will tell me heaven it's a 10th day it's not the New Year anymore but Happy New Year it's always great um for me not to make resolutions per se but just to remind myself of what my intentions are for this new year when I met with the staff at Cherry Brook primary school yesterday we talked about what is your intent personal intention and a professional intention and the staff wrote a letter to themselves that I told them I will mail them that letter in eight weeks just to remind them what they stated their intentions were again to refocus in eight weeks if they're like me to finish the school year strong so it's a good time for us to think about what are our intentions this year um a few things to report on tonight um first of all I want to thank Peg because before the holidays Peggy went around to every school and dropped off four engines for the staff I know you don't want to be recognized from it probably but Peggy that was so right that was so greatly appreciated and every you know you affected every staff member in the district by your generosity so thank you so much um as you know um it's been a a sad couple of weeks with the tragic accident that occurred or the passing of uh Raheem and his mother Faye and I really want to thank uh Canton High School's principal Drew dipo assistant principal Dr Ruth Kidwell coach Bill Phelps who really came together along with the staff to plan what was a wonderful Memorial tribute last Thursday night I also want to thank the Canton Community for turning out for the the Wake On Friday night and for the funeral service on Saturday which was very very very moving um and the family in the Hartford Community certainly thanked the Canton Public Schools for all of their support and all of the love that they continue to share with me that they feel throughout this uh this tragic time and so our sympathies continue in our compassion continues to go out to the family and our own uh Khalil Thomas this was uh Raheem was his first cousin so he's affected greatly by this so I know we'll all be there to support him in any way possible I also really want to thank the executive leadership team at crack members of the leadership team attended the memorial service Thursday night which was really really touching that they took time to come out to Canton and be with us so I can't thank them enough either um I want to also let you know that the majority of my time um lately uh and needless to say of Donna's time has been spent on putting together the budget presentations uh I should say the budget budget presentation that I will give you on February 7th um while we were putting together the board calendar you know we know there were a lot of meetings in February regarding the budget so we are not going to need to meet next Tuesday in in reflection on the budget process and in being mindful about your time in the administrator's time we had scheduled a meeting next Tuesday just to talk about budget we won't need to uh I'll be able to share all the information in my February 7th presentation so you have one less meeting for budget so I hope I hope you're good with that that's great um but again my presentation to you will be on February 7th related to the budget all of the administrators have presented their budget proposals to Donna John and to me and now we're refining those and I'm looking at putting together a budget that will meet our goals and objectives for next year while also being as fiscally responsible as possible so that process is on your way tonight the finance committee heard um the draft of the capital Improvement plan that um we're looking to put together as part of our budget and you have a one-pager um in your packet tonight that lists all of the projects that we are planning on doing again the finance committee heard about that for the first time tonight and the finance committee will meet again on the 24th at 5 30 to refine the list that list will come to you at our next meeting as well for your approval so we can move the plan forward to the town officials the reason we need to move the capital Improvement project plan ahead so early is because it's part of the board of selectman's budget so what we present to the board of Select and they will include in their budget proposals back are there any questions about that we are currently determining a parent informational meeting regarding the mental health and wellness program that you approved at the last meeting I'm spending time with the administrators and we'll be setting up a meeting with our mental health and counseling staff to answer questions that they have about the program and then we'll be meeting with parents so if you wonder why that hasn't been scheduled yet I want to make sure our staff is well aware of the program and have all of their questions answered so we're moving forward with that program I also want to remind all of you and especially for the public and maybe tuning in today um that next Wednesday night will be our first diversity equity and inclusion Community Gathering of this school year we're continuing with our community Gatherings we'll be focused on equity and as part of our strategic plan we are conducting focus groups to gather information from individuals on their thoughts on diversity equity and inclusion in Canton so this first meeting will be set up as focus groups with our various stakeholders so parents will have a focus group together staff members administrators students and we have trained professionals through crack that will be the facilitators so we're asking people to sign up in advance if you haven't signed up it's not too late the link is on our website we just need to let the correct staff know how many people will be attended next Wednesday night January 18th from 7 to 8 30 through Zoom that's because there is these uh breakout sessions and they need to prior to the meeting have that all set up so if you can register sooner than later I'd appreciate it and so that that's part of our one of our goals for this year as a reminder we have Justine Ginsburg coming back for another parent presentation I believe the focus is on social media social media in the minds of our children on February 1st Wednesday yeah Wednesday February 1st that's at seven o'clock and that'll be in the Canton High school media center but we'll also be streaming it live uh did the last um one get posted was that live or sent out the video of it is on the school website okay let me check and we're we're building our our camp Public Schools YouTube channel to be able to have access to those types of recordings as well and I'm really grateful to care for her her Savvy with that as she builds our uh social media branding there too so thank you an email goes out about the upcoming one is there a way to send a link on the past the past it's a great idea it's a great idea thank you Kim we'll do that um the students mentioned the camp project um Camp if they didn't say this they might have stands for Canton Mastery project and as they describe it's really a culminating project where we expect all of our high school seniors to apply the 21st century skills that we want them to have in a project so that's our vision of a graduate right there to be creative uh excellent communicators collaborators critical thinkers and compassionate citizens and to show those skills through this project so for the first time there's going to be an evening uh where um any of us can go into the high school and listen to students projects and to do a gallery gallery walk Mr depipo's here today I think Mr depipo and Dr Kimwell for their leadership in these projects uh when me ask came to do the accreditation visit that was one of the greatest takeaways they walked away with how effective this program is how creative our administrators have been in scheduling time for our students to participate in the can project and so I put a flyer in your packet uh the Dr Kidwell sent out just letting you know that on the evening of Thursday January 19th you can have the opportunity to come into Canton High School to hear more about these projects and I believe that is from six to eight o'clock but again the time is on your wire so please take advantage of that I know you'll be very impressed with our students work so we've got a couple things going on next week we've got the diversity equity and inclusion Community gathering on the 18th and then we have the camp projects on the 19th which is another reason why I thought you'd appreciate having Tuesday night so thank you everyone that's my report for tonight excellent report any questions from superintendent okay hearing on if you move along so the chair report tonight is uh you're going to see in your packet we're going to vote on the approval to move forward with the submittal of the zoning regulation Amendment for the purposes of putting electronic side uh in the by the uh High School it'll be in the driveway as you move into the driveway it'll be on the left-hand side now electronic side signs are not approved in the town again so we're seeking a municipal exception the reason why we like that sign is well first of all our our students are very well electronic Savvy and we think um we'll be able to flash the messaging there that will be important also the town is going to share in that so you know we're voting is going to be held sometimes it's confusing is it in high school is it going to be Community Center so that sign will be able to communicate things of importance like that things of importance about the Board of Education and so on and so forth other towns have to sign like Burlington uh I understand why the town does not want everybody on 44 to have an electronic sign and I agree with that however um I think for the for these purposes uh Municipal exception makes sense so I'm going to ask you to uh to approve us of being able to it for that later any questions on sure what's the cost of this room so it's in the CIP at ten thousand dollars but I think it's going to be closer to fifteen or twenty thousand dollars it's in the CIP um I thought as maybe we'll do some fundraising for it too or maybe maybe stick with the 10 and maybe fundraise for the additional amount any kind of services that kind of thing but uh yes thank you just find again so just as you go into the driveway immediately to the left if you know to the right is the long sign that says came in high school we didn't want to take away anything from there right so to the left there's there's a nice opening of space uh and it'll be it'll be on timer so we won't affect the neighbors you know something you don't need to flash that sign past maybe eight o'clock at night maybe it goes on early in the morning morning can you visualize it to the left is it going to be flashing no it will just you know scroll information yeah you scared me there no I I don't need to be flashing no no it's the sign B how big is it we don't I don't have a drawing yet of it first of all I want to see if we can do it then we'll begin to go out and bid for it yeah everybody okay well I will get into that you can gather your questions we'll have more of a conversation uh as we go into the boat and you were saying there's going to be Town information on there as well the talk to Cloud vessel will share Town information on your tour it's probably controlled at the high school probably from Mr dipepo's cell phone something like that another thing for him to do all right um I do want to tell you that I talked to our uh for selectment there's no movement on the pfas situation at Sharon Brook School uh they don't have a plan yet I'm disappointed that we uh we um kind of ice that that field for no reason at all uh because it could have been used and you know there's soccer in the fall for the younger the younger children that was a great place for it so um they don't have a plan yet he doesn't think he'll have a plan this spring and I don't want to carry that through you know into the fall again because first of all the fence looks terrible and there's no no activity the problem with pfas is that the uh the state hasn't come up with any relief uh our insurance company will pay a million dollars mitigations two million dollars so they're having issues they're hoping with the budget surplus the governor might step up but that's that's the selections issue but I just want to let you know the Vets is off there and I don't see any relief and I don't see them needing it up there in the spring so maybe we'll see if we can get some relief uh to take that down and then um that's all really I have Kevin Went Over the uh the finance uh issue so that's all I have at this point Lou are the barrels gone yes okay the Barrel's in the uh and the uh trailers are gone uh they were stocking and I'm working with Donna to get those out of there at CIS it's empty it's empty and we're just figuring out if we can exchange the that one that we own or one that we rent that is spilled to the hill at the high school so so we don't have to empty that one you know I mean the good news is it'll be out of CIS that'll create more parking we don't have that eyesore of that big long trailer there uh the next thing is in the beautification I'd like to see us to uh somehow put some screening where our garbage barrels are both in CIS and Cherry Brooks we're getting better we're looking better okay any further questions for me um Ryder Russell okay so let let's move in to uh public forum and we'll first open it up online and then we'll go to Teresa so thank you so care anybody online that would like to speak to public forum to the board of Selectmen we're opening up right now so if you're joining us online you can go ahead and go ahead if you don't have any reasons okay great hearing none will uh we'll now move to the books here and uh Teresa bargers here and uh thank you for coming and uh you want to give us an overview sure please do just state your name for the record get your address please oh my name is Teresa Sullivan Barger and I live at eight Pond Road and I'm here as the co-chair of the Canton greater together Community advisory committee and we are a group of citizens who represent all walks of life in Canton theoretically the Hartford foundation for public giving has set aside funds for every town in Hartford County we're one of 29 towns who gets the funding and I'm coming to you to ask you as since you're on the board of ed I'm not just asking you this in your role as a board of ed member but also because you're probably a volunteer in other organizations as well so I'm reaching out to you as individuals as well as representatives of the schools to ask you to help get the word out to the the community we want to reach every facet of the community and we want to get as many people or organizations applying for Grants as possible we have this year we're setting aside up to thirty thousand dollars to give in Grants and last year we gave uh um twenty five thousand five hundred I think to seven organizations so I we we just wish we had more interest and we also need more members to serve on our committee Teresa what's an example of a request okay the Main Street committee last year they asked for funding for seating in downtown Collinsville for some of it was wheelchair accessible um so that people who were um it was some of it was benches and some of it was like picnic tables they had money for some but they didn't have enough money for how many they wanted so they got that was prior to coming to us and so we gave them funding for more tables the Collinsville Historical Society needed money for some um some upgrades to its electrical system and it normally might may have funded that kind of work through admissions but because of covid they didn't have people coming in so they kind of needed to make up for that um so Land Trust had um a project they had a new property and they needed some help with funding to make it more accessible like parking and stuff like that so this and there's there are there's also the library is doing something to make it um have internet service outside and then the Cherry Brook Garden Club is putting up a native plant garden near the river and then there was some the soccer Canton soccer did something for kids with disabilities so kids with disabilities could play soccer so it was it was a nice cross-section but still not as much as not as broad a cross-section as we would have liked can teachers apply for example absolutely can apply and you know you were you mentioned something about wanting to cover up the trash um bins I mean you could theoretically that each school when my kids were in school there was some kind of a group of gardening people you could apply for funds to buy plants to planted the schools to cover up the you know so there's a yeah there's really that we would love for teachers to apply I know the Canton Education Foundation always had a hard time getting teachers to apply and one of the things we're having an information session on February 9th if anyone feels it's too difficult it's really not we're happy to help people explain how it works for you know answering questions show them a you know a prior Grant application that someone else filled out so they can model it their application after a successful Grant application from another entity are the grants rolling or is there a time frame so you you need to apply by April 1st can you award once a year yes the award once a year the deadline is March 15th the decision will be announced in early June so the funds would be spent June 1st through um of 2023 and through the following year that's so it's a one-year Grant and it can't be for funds that have already been spent it doesn't have to start being spent on in June but it can't be spent before June and the grants are from 500 up to 10 000.

the second part of that is if approved tonight we could let people know if you want to come to Adams 14 knowing in January 10th that there is an incentive for teachers to come of thirty five hundred dollars we can get the best and brightest early and we're not behind Abel there is not an abundance of teachers and so this the sooner that we can put this out there and leverage it and hire them in advance and get them to be home in Adams 14 it will mean a lot to us people say when they're valued appreciated and grow and we appreciate your work in helping us value that and again I just can't say enough about Jason and Wayne and Lynn I'm blessed to work with them not only do they represent of their organizations but they represent and fight for the kiddos that we have in Adams 14.

yeah the the other thing that I was going to say is that um uh I think Queen Apple art yard mentioned how we had this year a handful of things pass through Council that we had been working on for a long time which is pretty exciting um and and on the flip side of that we're still working on a handful of things that we have been for a long time like the things you mentioned chair mursky um like around the rental ordinance and the housing ordinance and some of these concierge and you know even the natural gas ban we've now talked about for several meetings and so it's not clear to me exactly where the bottlenecks are like if they're um you know there's not enough staff at OSI to work on some of these things if there are things with the city lawyers or if you know there could be places where um you know people those of us as commission members you know just need to help writing some of these resolutions out and so um you know similar to what others have said I'm I'm interested in you know not only working on new topics in this coming year but also finding ways to push the things that we have been working on you know throughout this last year or even the year prior finally across some to get to City Council mission 11.

so it totals the 5300 okay are there any other questions [Music] it will be sure sign page yeah it should be page do you want the first one it's just super tiny yeah let me just download it and save it before the district um December's numbers MMO reflects a budget balance and it's very tidy on there of um two million one hundred and thirty nine thousand three hundred Seventeen and nine cents we're six months into the fiscal year and everything's looking good our Grants Department is currently moving expenditure funds from sr2 to sr3 um that's why there's a negative balance in there but um once we adjust those purchase orders into sr3 then we'll fix that negative in there teacher housing expenditures are moved into impact Aid as payments are made depending on our fund balance in teacher housing that's a normal thing that we do every year because we don't get in enough revenue from teacher housing um to cover the cost of Maintenance so the extra we pay out of impact Aid and then um we are still waiting to hear back from Arizona legislator about the aggregated expenditure limit um so depending on that when that gets in we'll have a clear picture of um what monies will have and um at this time we don't need a budget revision overall we currently have 72.07 percent left in the budget for spending or 28 million 881 873.30 and that's excluding in encumbrances we received 9 million 431 and 48 cents so far in revenues for this fiscal year if you have any questions on the budget questions forward to the budget okay thank you [Music] welcome to number four a barbecue into my school district principle of wolves president um before we begin our principal rewards I won and once again I know objective principles in a time when we need disability we need um uh what you need to show the division and Leadership especially during any decision I cannot thank the principles in love do especially the month of December in which you not only they have to finish all the feature about week evaluations in the middle of the Year classroom visit and also organize any event that's happening in the month of December um and you will see during the report everything that able to manage but I want to personally thank them to be able to bring that instability to the schools and continue to move forward especially during a busy one and at this point um a principal from the honest at high school please go forward okay good evening president governing board members um I have submitted my principal principal's report in writing um I hope you've had the opportunity to review it um I do want to thank Mr Diaz for giving that shout out but I couldn't do it without the team that I have um it's not just me it's a class of the team so um here's our video [Music] foreign [Music] you can't do it anymore [Music] foreign [Music] thank you foreign [Music] foreign [Music] I'm still [Music] here [Applause] at the field day we made a house competition and so we were giving out points on all the games that the students were playing and they really learned how to work as a team versus you know I guess for this there was no price given that the other disappoint um we added the points by the end of the day on the sub one but they had such an amazing time working together and even like just respecting one another telling each other when we announced that we heard here but they really had a good time [Applause] [Music] laughs again what you see what is what everyone sees but what's what's behind the scene once again what frequent we're doing to deal with um responsibilities my heart goes thank you [Applause] knowledge across the board especially because I appreciate them included the best but nonetheless so much I I'm sorry yeah they have been practicing for it they were excited we haven't done it in three years so they were really excited to participate in it and you know we made up whatever they wanted and a lot of our cultures need to accept that to support with that so and the kids are enjoying it if you notice in the classroom [Music] class whether it's picture class or not but they enjoy but actually the ukulele program wasn't going to perform but they asked so that they can show you know what they've been learning you know we all have our dance program so they perform later we couldn't put the whole thing on there but um that was a little now yesterday we sent out permission slips for after school program we received a stack back so yeah it was funding it so that we know yeah very good thank you so much good evening for president Wendy and board member and Mr Diaz so I have submitted my principal for a report so I hope you had a chance to read it certificate foreign [Music] sorry please your teeth [Music] [Laughter] Heroes [Music] [Applause] foreign [Music] foreign [Music] thank you unfortunately students are getting hot chocolate we're having perfect attention [Music] foreign [Music] please [Music] okay as you can tell that was not made by me [Applause] [Music] just like um Miss Enriquez said we would not be able to do it without our team that we have on our campus via the last starting last year it was that admin team that came up with all the crazy ideas and now it's the teachers coming up with the crazy ideas and so it's rubbing off on them so we're getting there [Applause] foreign [Music] [Applause] [Music] supposed to go away hi good evening for president Beverly board member assistant is uh submitted my report I'm ready [Music] well [Music] all right foreign [Music] um [Music] [Applause] [Music] um near the end of the semester and so um Monday so it was yesterday yesterday we were able to disperse those along with their student schedule so they now all have their house shirts so it was cool to see some students put them all there was a young lady workers today so I'm excited to to get that ball rolling uh for us for conception so [Applause] [Music] but I know I really wanted to go to Thursday it's just going to be really bad for you because we're going to introduce um Mr Diaz as our interim superintendent and he's going to speak a little bit about Direction Network and have and how they're lining Cycles with the district goal so we can all be consistent so I think that was the perfect opportunity to get in front of some parents and students to to see where um where we're headed so if you can please be there yeah it's great yeah I'm gonna try to do some games thank you so much for always inviting us and we do that every time so appreciate it I don't know if that's a good thing all right saying the name of the school three times I know I'm going to practice that uh Miss Larson is already guaranteed me a Wednesday morning just to myself I'll have it for you guys next time I promise so good evening everybody president Wendy yet board members superintendent Mr Diaz and all of you guys I too have turned in my court reports uh back to our video feel free to ask me any questions I will do the best I can to answer them foreign [Music] I didn't crocheted that that whole one piece oh yes all that artwork that was by one of our young ladies in this kind of popular shoe she makes hats uh hand uh gloves she made me a cap for I went to New York City that was a honest New York City picture right there uh the Christmas tree but she may be ready to go with some gloves um and we've got a new young lady who's wasn't online on me but we encouraged her to come on in and we found out that she is incredible artist incredible artist um so yeah if you've got an artistic Bunch there I really like to express themselves through all kinds of different Avenues when it comes to the arts and crafts it's awesome I don't have any questions and I really appreciate that's the um the videos um even though the holidays are over it kind of just takes us back to appreciating the holiday with family friends you know people and all the hard work that we went into making sure that our kids enjoyed so I really really appreciate it we're very grateful to the community tocc youth by their own we we and our young lady get a laptop a really nice laptop you saw those two bicycles given out um so it's amazing I think the sharing that that happens for us specifically and does [Music] children thank you okay so thank you thank you [Music] [Applause] um [Music] leadership governing board reports [Music] summarize I'm okay okay I'm not thinking because I think um [Music] appreciate it um it was a really great experience actually I think for um going to the conference and kind of walking in trying to figure out what we're doing for the presentation I think it was like what are we doing here um but overall I think it was great I was grateful that Wynonna and Mr Casio came out because I think that they share um they have good experience and that's great from England students so it was really great to do that I think we the next time we do it I think it'll be a different film um to get our um getting our feet but overall it was great it was great getting the Bell award um see the video and it was exciting to see that happen and then also just hearing the keynote address speaker on the second day he was super inspiring I me and Kathy had a picture with him so he really had a formative energy captivated the audience and I want the way leaving you feeling really inspired and I was like here and I went and said it was all his stuff intercepting a lot of free books um and I ordered some online from him so it was a great um conference but also just learning about the processes in relation to like how we vote um for the Native American caucus and that's something that um I think that's the second time experience I ever lived for a while I probably would have missed it and thought and I made the most in here I'm like oh okay so I'm sharing that information and congratulations to Juan for becoming um the chair of the caucus [Applause] workshops that we attended um it was done by um hold on I want to say inside Louise and they are working with fifth graders to get them into the stem field and a lot of it is they work with John Hopkins Center um and they send them to a training there but a lot of it is centered on that and they're working with fifth graders to get them through calculus trigonometry and how I think I had to at least halfway because I could go to the election that's happening with me she did share that say later on said that like it took them a couple years to get to get it going but it's a really great opportunity and I think that we should go visit there just to learn more information about that program because it's been going on first I want to say he said 15 years 13 years um but these data so they highlight all these things that I've been working with since fifth grade and that they have gone to college and like they've gone to like Ivy League schools and that a really great job and so that was one of the highlights for me to attend that information especially because I work at higher ed and some of those things are really and I think early out which is really important for our students and the exposure that's it thank you thank you Stevens anything that's awesome yeah I'm excited but um it was a it was a fantastic I've gone to many many men um all the Arizona State um before [Music] being recognized I think it sells a lot of the work that you do to support here at the school district but also um congratulations to Juan and I also want to just say that I think it took a lot before you didn't run for the board of directors uh traditions Arizona student participation well again you will teach you and um foreign situation the other thing is that I really appreciated the tour and you know it was really um fantastic to see all the work that has been done I'm talking about what films and understanding you know the followers that we needed to um we need to apply for in order and basically at this point from the what you call it the uh maintaining to before we start building right now we're going from repairing to maintaining and then we all did something yeah that you're right here I can't remember anything um you know what I I noticed about how you work very well with your staff and how much your staff is very well known in public schools and they're very refreshold with them they care about what the work that they do in regards and you can share that to them please you know so I'm hoping that we will continue doing that and everybody knows all the facilities in each school and who they are and what they do and I think that has a lot to do with having [Applause] fun and we're here for another four years and all work together in the future and yeah thank you oh awesome thank you Miss Hendricks so just to kind of round out our reports I do definitely want to thank uh everyone for your indulging with us in the long and mistaking process that we had throughout the year of December trying to navigate our way to much of what we have to do as a governing board in addressing our superintendent and then of course acknowledging our intern superintendent so thank you all so much who participated in a lot of the efforts that we tried to take future we were making smart strong decisions on behalf of our students in the community I feel very very confident that we are going to see some very much needed successes and the ability for us to really become elaborate as much as we have and as much as we will with the community and all of our parents and everyone that participation of bringing up our students so thank you so much first of all for again indulging with us and the [Music] tours it was definitely something to take in and actually be able to see and look at and hear the information that was provided um very grateful and honored to be able to see as much as we have done and really look forward to achieving much more as we as we continue to look at different families the school's so much better so I think we'll have to take a half against me Mr Roloff team in the middle and I've got this we're working on um and any other contractors and so on and so forth that are just going to come out of our class um running out again I am part of the areas in the School Board Association board of directors that just had a retreat this past weekend which was also looking at much of the Strategic plans for the overall Association and then um kind of just getting to know the rest of the board members it's a really long board I think everyone on that floor right now is not even been with the association for more than two to three years most of them are very new so they were really impressive there's only like two or three of them that have been on the board for at least six years so it is interesting and I think that we're going to see a lot of really good system out of the association on behalf of not only all the students in Arizona but specifically for Native American students which I know we emphasize which then leads into the presentation that we did at ESPN um how much of that was in light of just trying to highlight some other things that we've been able to see that you already able to achieve I'm so very grateful that we had those that were with us to be able to give us some of the first really quick for you as how it happens inside of the questions um blasting uh no I just thank you all so much and um looking forward to touring the sites again I want to look at the academics type of tour throughout the campuses I'm looking forward to that one um [Music] number six which is our Barbecue University School District superintendent support [Music] congratulations um [Laughter] all of all the directors [Music] culture uh coordinatory I want to give a shout out also to the production of the first one is for director Martinez he has worked on the next year enrollment online enrollment is smoother so he will be presenting during the war between both them and also show you we are pretty much are ready to get started but he will go in there during the retreat in the presentation that you put together to get us going we are or have to schedule on that one so I want to announce it foreign [Music] as well speaker [Music] during the month of December among the history while still focusing on the comfortable standards bottom discussion discussion it was priority the moving forward our lessons [Music] number three call children relevant lessons and number four ensure that eighty percent massive or attending some of the spirits are better December is an extension of August of November during the month the school's value but to use to Showcase and really strategies they implemented in the month of November in cultural strategies in a video here's an example foreign [Music] teams to provide valuable feedback for teachers foreign during the month of December students either through Century they've been taking their pain for assessment we are shooting homework in January special thanks to all of our students owners and coordinators at the insert our students by taking advantage of our artists who deliveries as well as winter credit recovery program thanks to everyone support our students get third grade through eighth grade I demonstrated almost a month and a half birthday meeting and over a month if not also special thanks to this nothing Mr Colton what is successful with their credit recovery foreign [Music] thank you [Music] I don't know what it is how could you guys thought [Music] laughs did you work out no [Applause] any questions excellent question no no thank you [Music] all of us all of us and you guys have said it before [Music] everyone that's working at their sites to accomplish this whole goal and the gold and now award um the sunrise house I know that'd be really appreciated us stopping by when we get our visit [Music] where is compliance and we're ahead of the game and we're you know looking forward to it for us for everything that they're doing with the buildings we didn't we never had seen that we didn't have a plan and everyone was satanical and wherever and and there was really no plan for bosd and and looking forward in and the upcoming year so I really appreciate everything that you and the city is that you're going to try to make sure that everybody's coming together and you have such a um calling her and the way that you're doing it is is going to benefit all of us and especially our children so right but for me that's what really stands out is that there's a plan that we're looking forward to this there's a goal that we have and that everybody's coming together to reach that goals thank you and then and then again being there um being at the the conference circus to make sure that our video was going the way it was supposed to be going to I would not know how to do that I don't know this is so that that for me was really really interesting [Music] I think he resigns that once again it's not my plan it's a representation of where we're going to go as a team um I've brought on my team and I look forward that my voice is going to be very voice and and that goal is going to be the calls um that we're replacing was as soon as the survey what a community deserves um she also was able to based on her um connections um get over twelve thousand dollars worth of reading glasses that you see on the relations but I don't want I want to take these opportunity as well to celebrate so shout out to me before [Applause] on the basis there is just digitalizing the enrollment process and making it so much easier for pushing for so I really am proud of all of you guys [Music] thank you this one has no audio okay [Music] [Laughter] [Music] decision Young music [Applause] I didn't think music would be necessary but um [Applause] [Music] I need somebody [Music] um so go ahead and just play the video yes please [Music] these other people in the administration building that donated to the five quality boxes that went out to five families in our district each box included either hand or a turkey second box six cans of vegetables pumpkin pie rolls pears potatoes a Christmas towel washcloth along with Will donated to work or famous everyone who donated I would also like to give a big shout out to my son about a Euro price Turner who helped him shop put the food boxes together and help me deliver thank you music a voiceover [Applause] those are all the reports of the videos I know we spent some time going over the videos on the briefings but any specific question comments at this point do you think from the board thank you so much Mr DS appreciate it number seven uh go to the club sponsors um we'll go ahead and read them off the floor at least just edit the advisors [Music] Club sponsors um Matthias for the equator there we go Ronaldo and shortly for science barbarinis foreign number one discussion or possible approval on the performance page [Music] okay thank you for the second events follows in favor of the motion one more deer that's all Anna Marie Stevens Sylvia Hendricks LMA Greasewood aye Kathleen Vance motion carries thank you number two discussion Arts leadership 2020 foreign [Music] District administrators classified staff to be able to put together a calendar um and that it could be also cultural culturally responsive and as well as give it as a vs 100 million days for your review and I have reviewed the the calendar myself and I have been with a board members individualism to review the calendar and in this point we'll bring you the calendar forward for your approval upon your approval they will then determine when are going to be the fall and spring uh future conferences any action or discussion yeah a motion to approve the calendar for tomorrow all those in favor of the motion Anna Marie Stevens aye Sylvie Hendricks Ella Mae gracewood um Kathleen Vance motion carries yes [Music] 12 months um we do believe that it is more financial responsible to have the wealth administrators that we think about not only um plan and execute the responsibilities of the regular school year summer school but also plan for the incoming school year it is my support and as well as bringing it before the government board for support to extend this calendar for our principal administrators uh it's full administrators as well as some of the district and administrators will be able to support moving forward and carry it all I've carried all the three-year extended goals that we have uh that will be presented to you foreign motion by Sylvia Hendricks second by Anna Marie Stevens correct all those in favor Juan bundier Anna Marie Stevens aye Sylvia Hendricks Ella Mae gracewood aye Kathleen Vance motion carries number four discussion and possible accrual of reading Innovations positions oh Lord um our individual School uh the highest received an award in front of you to be able uh to school to join the school around me that she's receiving from this grant she the principal with uhm is asking for support in hiring a reading specialist to be able to support other students uh to pull up a toy review program and I'm also lead to board and I believe that this is a a good investment all the funding not basically what it's known as R based on Witnesses we need to go uh we need to thank the students and I do believe that having this tier 2 intervention in that school will be able to help us move the students forward in the area of really this person is going to be really important directly to uh Lewis and the funding is now for the district once again it is based on the grant that the school has received at the soil program right um I had a certain discussion I just want to make sure that today that I voice it I I know that we definitely want to be able to support encourage and engage um and in order to have some discussions conversation Mr Diaz was on at the retreat I think ultimately what I do want to do is from all of the sites of demanding these interventions the community seats that we're putting because continue to still remain with me through we are what would happen backwards I understand hold it in places and making sure of why it is utilizing everything that we have to the degree that we need to some form of action that we're going to see results from it I think I've had that conversation in general um multiple times with mischievous just just just depending on that we or what are we missing because the stupid um I'm resolving a little bit but you don't hate that that's just from looking at it from our point of view that's what we did but I know it's a different uh site line a site for looking [Music] have so many interventionists and so many different types of levels of support and I don't really be able to see so much of the retreat that you know about me to look at that from a different viewpoint Miss sex yeah um I agree on one but I also wanted to find out um so this position will open up immediately and so it'll be four doesn't remember yeah it's only for loans currently only for this year but if we get approved for the CSI Grant again we will keep it going but we don't know for sure if uh it will still be under CSI record [Music] one of the leaders that we need to either is if it's working why is it working and when it's not working what are we going to do about it for this position if we don't get the money from a school Improvement that's a good thing in the right direction but once we have um tier one and two two in place then we can decide which other programs we don't need one position we don't need a weekend then refurnish uh repurpose in all the areas that we need but nevertheless um this position is complete into the grass but not having those money it's everything [Music] also buyers so we haven't accepted by the center of the Season all those in favor of the motion one would you um yes Anna Marie Stevens aye Sylvie Hendricks Ella Mae graciously aye Kathleen Vance motion carries [Music] Sylvie Hendricks Ella Mae grieswood aye Kathleen Vance motion carries [Music] um [Music] or have that information where we are and what we're going to do and how we're going to get there um so that'll be my only requests for the future because it for sure it's just to have that granted you know layout whatever it is you need to um be transferred yeah I think that that's going to be a good way for us to to see why do we use a little bit of holders we are we are providing a lot of support [Music] anything else for future than that um first things first the Winter retreat uh I sent you your reservations we're all set for 120 check in check out 122.

[Music] and at the high school level it's roughly 700. what about the junior eye junior high is about roughly 300 280 300. okay okay short this week I know he's a very valuable I am very disappointed that you guys did go ahead and um sign into and approve and vote on the curriculum and the reason is is because you're talking almost a thousand students with Junior High in high school because this is the the grades it would be 6th through 12th grade again I went to almost every single one of those meetings that you had for families and stakeholders so about 50 to maybe 100 people kind of participated in those meetings and hearings and stuff and it's just sad because it's a thousand students but with only 50 people of feedback you guys went ahead and decided to go ahead and vote in it so that to me makes it very disappointing because the one thing is again I know it's an opt-in I get that but the whole thing is I think Maury should empower the parents and had a workshop for parents because if the parents are the ones that want their kids to have a sex education then they should be here to go ahead and learn a little bit more about it instead of teaching the kids to teach the parent so thank you you guys have a good night thanks thank you um [Music] next item on the agenda is uh it's an item that probably is best discussed in an executive session we have a motion to go into executive motion from Chuck second from Diana all in favor all right we will adjourn now and go into an executive session which is private to discuss this matter and we'll be meeting in that room right back there when that is over we'll vote to leave executive session we'll come back in here to make the rest
