they're going to be staying at the cape codder and attend the conference during the day at the Hyannis Resort and Conference Center and um the school bus shuttles are provided between hotels for schools and they're playing to travel down in one hopefully with less oils to the student council as they have in the past the cost of the trip is approximately 350 to 375 per family but it finances are concern student council will happily cover the cost so that students can attend as finances should not need to train and then they did um list the whole very long run no Michael I love it how would this 12 students are the upper class representation to work with jackpot yeah sure okay yeah typically they're typically my favorite um all right motion passes you guys can think about it yeah uh motion to approve the request of scores of obso need to start those items off thank you uh any discussion questions [Music] motion Improvement and additional past FTE preschool teacher at BMS so um any questions now that's so awesome so moved oh sorry you want to talk oh my goodness it's fine yeah so um so Chip is on the program uh Durant so before anything I know we had to get this approved first and then we will any permits that need to be presented will go to us or to you to the facilities ninja sweater with six shots humbly suggest as the building principle and we're delighted yeah by the various town yeah by the various parties um yeah we should put an amendment in here so is it possible for the our facilities manager to coordinate those the permitting process could that be appropriate okay so because it's not District 90.

[Music] really I'm sure he'd be empty to like [Music] yeah Mr slow down all right all right so do we have a motion to amend this motion to who is the language that you link like Incorporated will boarding all necessary requirements improvements I think in the Berlin baseball slash basketball group actually I know they are take notes everyone requires a portion of the large portion of membership thing like I'm their partners um to make sure that the link Incorporated and their Partners yeah coordinate all necessary approvals and permits I'm going to second then Julie all right what about the amendment zero all in favor of the motion to accept the donations aye aye as amended right as amended all right motion passes okay that's it for business items three people die yes yeah that was the one that you said um all right so this next this next piece here is something that requested just a sort of open compliments if anybody wants to suggest anything for next time okay um this is the suggestion for consideration for future agendas if it fits often guaranteed just feel free to talk together um so the first one is Suki's ability to restart the coma dashboard for reported covet cases in each of the syllables um hopefully to have a specialist including the School nurses regarding the burden of tallying reported cases weekly and also the school committee to maintain the dashboard is not to just burden the central office staff for nurses the second one who's open is for School nurses to remind parents on how the protocols such as CDC recommendations for testing or return only after fever 3 24 hours and weekly emails no principles Etc um the CDC Updates this weekly data late Thursday so it's just a Time for practice letters three in feasibility of home and health shooting for students quarantining for covet or other long-term illnesses so as not to lose time on family made of high school that was happening and I didn't even know Christie thanks um and then four um that are South are attracting during the school committee meeting so it's really hard to listen and actually hear what people are saying during the meetings um so I know I've asked a little bit but if we could look into understanding for the meetings or the recordings that would be great I heard that somebody texted and said the audio was much better today so I I don't know because they were speaking they're standing next to the camp that probably The Voice reminder has an interesting thing it rotates and it's it traps speech it's really interesting um and then five is also for remote participation for school committee members or staff for admin for meetings um that are live given illnesses or other things within the the mafc there is words to allow remote participation more likely so it would be great to be able to look into that possibility of covet in the spring you know so I think we did look into that when I had covid because we had to literally cancel a Contracting contracts remember and there was they pretty much said no uh it's against the state uh it has to do with I could feel like face timed in but FaceTime isn't secure and had to be on Zoom that's because it was an executive session oh all right so I don't know about our negotiation is an executive session um that you can do it as long as you you say I am in a secure location by myself no one else can hear that or executive session I don't know yeah I don't know yeah well like I went to the open whatever so there is words in the mafc to allow that so we'll be friends I have one one thought um not not that we have you know want to extend the agenda but um you know just the the process of doing business as a committee like this sometimes my personal opinion can be a little robotic robotic to someone that's watching and I I think what I've heard from the community and personally feel is that I think the community and those watching would benefit from seeing humans talk to each other about subjects maybe a little bit more often in this forum and so you know I think if we try to do that to the best of our ability within the balance of the law because there are um some you know constraints there regarding open meeting a lot but um my suggestion would be to add a walk-in topics segment to our agenda because Matthew long but a short period of time where we allow open discussion about ideas hey should this go on next week's next month's agenda or not or tell us what we're doing now uh well I think you're you're asking for agenda items for next month yeah they correct me if I'm wrong with Christy but anything that would get deliberated you need to be noticed as opposed to me anything that's deliberated within a forum so that makes four of you must be done in public understood with notice right with 48 hours notice not including weekends so if if um it's like a walk-in topic to deliberate or make decisions yeah I don't think it would be appropriate for making decisions just just really trying to create an opportunity for for us to deliberate I guess more openly and less sometimes without as much Focus right I mean we always say deliberate more openly what's more discuss discuss things I mean you know discuss pros and cons you know way way things openly before both I think we we often come in you know having reviewed data um in advance and have our minds made up and so it's great for continuity of the meeting you know like this time do this bang bang bang we're pretty much aligned on most items come in but I think the community would benefit from hearing us the way pros and cons of different different ideas right I think we look to that voting record and they're pretty consistent among filters in the committee meeting our community after meeting after meeting which I think in class that could not a lot of um you know weighing the items so so beyond what we do now we're just ask questions go back what would we do because I think it's a good idea well I mean my suggestion was to create an opportunity on the agenda to talk about about items that have come up that maybe aren't ready to go and and it sounds like maybe that's that's not really feasible to just sort of pop up have an idea in our heads they can go on the agendas which is why we're having this session yeah it's not a criticism of how we run our meetings which one thing I want to say to John is actually how quickly you guys are changing the way they're teaching getting to that one District idea I like it but in a corpus I think you can move as quick as you want this is town government local government open meeting law we don't get to choose we don't get to you know the laws we have to follow so if we get on an agenda then we can deliberate it we can discuss it we can do whatever you want I totally get sorry I don't interrupting but I totally get where you and Bob and Jessica I get where you're coming from because when I started school committee last year I was so fired up about how the process was like oh you have to do it's like so rule-based and you come in thinking I'm gonna make such a big difference and I have all these great ideas and then you hear like wait a minute nope you're gonna break the law you do this and you shouldn't be talking about this so I totally get what you're saying you just want to like openly like solve problems and but like what Mike said and Christy pretty much can't put it like it has to be because we've had people play breaking open Banning law and I've seen I've done a ton of research because now I'm paranoid about it where people literally talk to an attorney get fined up to fifteen thousand dollars you have to like walk a very delicate line with it so I totally get what you're saying it's so hard when the public comes in and they make comments like I want to reply to them um multiple times I mean especially we were all sitting on it during covid with masking and it was so hard to sit in that Auditorium and listen to everyone probably like no you're wrong or yes you're right or whatever but it's like it is so I get what you're saying I wish there was a better way it probably isn't going to work but I would encourage us to think creative how we can breathe a little later between yeah no I totally agree and I think this this thing at the last 10 minutes of course not when it's 9 30 at night but you know because then we're all fried um and that's another thing I've talked about like maybe we have a two-hour limit and then we need another meeting I'd rather come back and have another meeting because honestly like after 8 30 I'm toast like I'm I'm out so and just let them know you all be there for 30 minutes and have them go on at the beginning because I think the other thing is people see the meetings are three hours and they're like I can't sit here so I think that's another thing is the length but I loved having 10 15 minutes at the end where we could kind of like so I know Jess you want to peel open the whole Kobe thing so you know and I have some thoughts on that but again tonight's not the time it's not on the agenda um you know you and I can talk one-on-one but we can't all talk as a group because that violates opening law outside of this meeting so I'm curious like if something is said in the public comments right it has to align to something on the agenda is is there a way to open that up because like this this is opening different topics that might not be related to anything else meeting so for the open promise in the beginning I mean is there a way to to open that up for like different topics well it is a public group anybody that's about a policy though that is the school committee policy that anything that's that's um sending public comments must be so that's something I'd have to look down on policy said yeah we can do that and also I think what it can contact us email us at any point in time and if it's an important enough topic then we can adjust together yeah well and because I was looking to Robert's Rules and you you kind of mend you know an unforeseen item can be the agenda can be offended an avid too um so I'm curious if that could happen after the open comments section yeah but I don't think that can be used just during any topic that something might want to add that's not at it you can't adjust an agenda after the community has been complicated so the way I read it is that you you can make a motion so would that have been before the Pledge of Allegiance before before may cause meaning to order is my understanding that once that is done that is the meeting is set foreign policy obviously yeah so opportunities at the end of each agenda I know like the timing of meetings not just something to be discussed at a future meeting here we're already here yeah as a public for the public to comment on YouTube you know like the public comments agreements if you have a school committee meeting is not omelets meaning they had an opportunity to come and become let's not just like explain their idea but I think if you have like one minute time for questions or clarification you know I don't know if it would really happen that much time we'll consider it in the future but we are Past Times of that emotion to adjourn hello um

uh everyone's a great holidays Allegiance of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands one nation under God the indivisible with liberty and justice for all um thank you we do not have any cards thank you item six is the elections um so this is something that you do every two or we have done every two years so that you'll need to make the decisions during a motion if it's for one year two year traditionally or historically it's always been for Tuesday and um there's just a discussion amongst you all and the emotions that is made for by one person to basically see if another person wants to pick on the role we do president first and then vice president and if I can just say something real quick learn there's you're just not going to talk about one year still just thinking after that so if I if I have any influence on that I would remember yes [Music] no [Music] um all right motion for a vice president um the way that I think it would work is foreign yes sir thank you all in favor [Music] now um I believe that the motion was for a two-year in you said in that motion that it was for two years the only other thing is and you can stay right where you're at but historically the president for the vice president on the right-hand side so if you want to stay where you're at you can't or you can move over to um cities right [Music] oh girls [Music] so you're you've got your picture taken today they'll be updated in the hallway so you know you'll be up in the hallway with your pictures and um office it was really good thank you thank you for having me next up is item 7A and we're going to be talking about our strategic planning process for the presentation no I do want to say Julie is a former board member first yes and then once she did her service with asba she became an employee of asbd so she has been in your gym so she knows where where you are coming from just so that yeah thank you I've always been out of your chair for 12 days um I like to refer to myself now as you recovering um thank you so much for having me um I am um Association and um foreign [Music] okay um so we'll go over a few things I don't want to take a ton of your time because I know that you have a meeting of a long meeting head but I wanted to kind of go through a whole what what the point of the Strategic plan is what the what the stages are um what the anatomy of it would look like um just to have a sense and you're discussing whether you're going to go into the barn audience um whether it's something um you have a baseline understanding about and um as we will look happy to facilitating that process [Music] this is where you want to go this is where you want to be it's your roadmap to the goals that you set for yourself so in the right Clarity what is important to you as a as a school board as a district and as a community um this is what brings us together what brings you together what are the forces that you might do or the issues that gives you Direction and it gives you focus and then it also allows you to have accountability for Student Success um achieving all that they can um so the next one um excuse me thank you um so one of the things that we would do right in the beginning is talk about your vision mission and your core values so if those are defined then and you want to stick with them then we would go ahead and do that if the immediate it we can talk about that if you want to redo it completely different talk about that as well um but those that's really the starting point of where we want to go then we'll then we'll go ahead and get some data that we can analyze um and look at sorry um and then if Dana will play a huge role in the way that you look at um what your areas of focus are so I'm going to give you a brief overview of kind of what the search engine plan you can look like the anatomy is plan so what we would do is we would use data that we would download it from Community from in-house equal to external stakeholders from your business Community from your faith communities everybody who's involved in the education of students um and we would do a few things one is we would find some areas of focus and these are just examples that are up there this does not have to be more areas of focused but you can focus in on climate culture academic success [Music] if you're going to write goals that have to be smart goals so they would have to be specific measurable maintainable relevant these are not Sparkles these are just meant to give you kind of a sense of what I'm talking about and then once you decide what your goals are you would look at okay we have to have some objectives or tactics of the way we're going to get there so if you're looking at the recruit entertaining effective teachers an objective might be create a new teacher dimensional program if you're looking at including student achievement you might Implement professional learnings so there's different ways that you can do it um then you would really get into the nitty-gritty what do we have to do to create this program or what do we have to do to implement this curriculum so there's lots of things that you'll look at the tasks are and we'll look at Google professors and then your your job will be to look after you set some goals use Divine your objectives if you've had some tasks where are you at and so the board's job is dedicated to come back around you know really frequently to say okay where are we at how are we progressing and what do we need to do from the board perspective to make this strategic plan successful so let's look at the next slide where we kind of have this board authority and superintendent Authority so the boards of authority is oversight you're at that you know 30 000 foot level you were doing um expectations you say parameters you can provide structure or um your employees or students superintendent's Authority is really that operational the implementation of things so we like this bracket because it kind of talks about a document goals your policies developing plans implementing them of marketing progressing results and you'll see that dotted line in there in the two arrows that's because there always should be a communication between the board and the superintendo board that's a two-day communication cycle so and that wouldn't change in a strategic plan that would be the same kind of you would want to have constant community so sometimes if what does the board do what does the administration do so I wanted to kind of go through that hopefully as well in terms of the anatomy so as far as the areas of focus the border wall is to identify those areas with so that would be your superintendent whatever cabinet level people you have whoever your leadership is the administration is what would be to provide that data and then assist you with identifying things and you don't want to have input from the people on the ground either your work so it won't just be your feedback it will be feedback from your community your staff students students are a good way to also get really good feedback about what the Strategic plan should look like we find that we have students involved in one that I didn't when I was at the court in Paradise Valley sometimes they would say something like oh my gosh that they really know what they're talking about um so I would encourage that as well what's your goals to the board role would be with Administration to assist with the development of goals and the administration would be with the board to help the goals so the goal development really does you would probably get a rough draft to put those goals might look like and then have some feedback in the conversations Administration on those goals and that is one that's one place and our division and Mission is so the objectives navigating to the point where you're kind of getting deeper right getting closer into the work that needs to be done so you would try to be back on objective so your Administration would go out to the employees ask for objectives given the goals that they have and then you would give feedback on that so um bring you those objectives and you might have some thoughts on that that they might take back and utilize the tasks that you have is really that's that's where the board's not really that now because this is operational okay this is what we're doing departments or um in the school district every day so you can provide feedback as needed and as is appropriate um but the administration's goal is to make sure those tasks get done and make sure that they're completed so whether that's superintendent or principal or a director or assistant [Music] and then for outcomes the board's job really is to review frequently the progress the results provided feedback and then also look at resources so if you have a goal and you need the feedback from your community as we don't have enough professional development in this particular area to make this goal reasonably the word could then say okay let's look at what can we do from a policy perspective from a budget perspective to give the resources that are needed for your employees to be able to achieve the outcomes that you want them to achieve and then the administration's votes for my data on the progress recommendations moving forward that's where some of those recommendations might come for what are you need to make this goal what do we need to be effective and so then on the next slide we kind of put up um some planning teams and throughout the process and you'll see in the next slide after this one I'm not ready for yet but um where these teams come in so the first team is a strategic oversight team um and that would be the board superintendent and whomever in the administration of the district so smaller group leadership people who have been influence the impact on policy um [Music] whether it's students whether it's your certified staff your classified staff it could be business members from the business Community your Bay Community as I said before parents so there's lots of people that you think um utilize in that stakeholder groups represent the um the group that they belong to so that would be for guidance and communication um and movement as you're going through the process and then finally the project teams and this is this could be one person it could be a small group it might be a department but their purpose would be to identify the tasks and complete them so whenever you decide you need to do to get to your stated goal these folks would be the ones who would help you figure out what that is [Music] and so the teacher would say okay here's what I think I need to do with this class this could be very very specific to what you're saying yes rather than a larger absolutely absolutely so this is when we're really taking damage um once that happens then you have that producer so how's it going what have we done able to a closer yeah um so this is kind of a framework that um we would follow to do the Strategic plan um pre-planning and phase one with the core team that's kind of that'll be similar um tasks in there but with different people kind of talking about lots of different things in there but we would look at we might do um you look at your vision your mission um look for beliefs you would do a SWOT analysis so unfortunately this is opportunity spreads with both the oversight team and the 14.

wondering okay call the meeting to order at six o'clock I will need to I'll need a motion to adopt the agenda I move to adopt the agenda as presented second on favor aye aye motion carries five to zero it's been a while um okay we're gonna go ahead and do the pledge and afterwards I'd like you to stay standing for our um Star Spangled Banner and to the Republic for which it stands one nation under God indivisible liberty and justice oh say can you see by the dawn's early lie was so proudly we held at the twilight's last gleaming whose brought stripes and bright stars [Music] we watched were so gallantly streaming and the rockets [Music] bursting in I gave proof through the night that our flag was still there oh say does the Star-Spangled Banner yeah or the land of the free and the hope of the bridge good job well that was an awesome job that's a hard song to sing good job guys and wait to it way to accompany her as well uh just so you can see we have a full board today yay and we'd like to welcome Mr Beach to the uh what is this called the governing board the dice that's right all right so we are going to go to uh meeting minutes do we have any questions on the minutes if not I will take a motion I move to approve the minutes from the last meeting as presented my second all in favor aye aye motion Derek can I vote what uh then you should assume hey I'm staying because I wasn't at that meeting okay so I have oh right you'll have to abstain too so I have three zero two motion carries three zero two all right um let's see here current events thank you madam president um just a couple things for the board legislative session has begun the the top officials Governor secretary of state attorney general superintendent Public Instruction and Treasurer we're actually sworn in a private ceremony on January 2nd and then a public ceremony last Thursday which I think would have been like the fifth uh Governor Hobbs gave her State of the State uh uh speech on Monday uh she also I was at the East Valley breakfast with the governor this morning and essentially she gave the same uh the same state of the state speech this morning she's she's doing a bit of a tour on the state with with that she has to by law release her tentative budget uh this Friday please understand that the way it works is the governor releases her budget uh or in this case uh she releases her Budget on Friday the first Friday after the State of the State and then the legislature House and Senate will release their own budgets that could be upwards of a month month and a half from now and then the negotiation begins between the governor and the house and the Senate as to what the budget looks like I will say that for public education the tenor and tone of the State of the State and the the the speech this morning was very very positive to public education um she used in both both cases probably the first after the initial introductions and and those kind of things uh probably the first 10 minutes uh with positive conversation about public education and supporting public education in the state of Arizona and has been noted in the in the papers and some other places that that is a change in in maybe the tenor and tone that that may have been exhibited before so it was a little bit uh a little bit different uh just in comparison to my career in some of the state of the states I've heard I have submitted uh in this report the governing board dates for this spring primarily just because Miss Tucker and Mr Beecher are new and that way I know we approve it in Jan in in July and I just want to make sure everybody had the dates you'll note that the March 1st uh board meeting is one week earlier uh than normal we normally have them on the second uh Wednesdays and that's just because of spring break and then you will note we also modified the June board meeting because we have a retreat and so we didn't go with with a meeting on Wednesday to come back with a meeting on Monday we we pushed it back a week earlier so there was a little bit of a gap between the board meeting and the um The Border treatment part of that would just be in case there's some items that come through uh depending on how long the the there's some people that would indicate the state budget could be done in 90 days there's other people that would indicate the state budget's not going to get done till uh July or August so there may be some things going on so that's why we stretch that one out enrollment we are down a little bit we lost a few more kids over the break um we are seeing a lot more we're starting to take a look at these numbers in a lot more detail we're starting to see a lot more of a transient nature within our district kids moving in and out on a fairly regular basis we track the kids coming in and then we see the kids going out the overall um Trend that is in the district's uh numbers whether you do it by by side or by grade level or by cohort isn't really changing percentage-wise the numbers are changing a little bit and we're continuing to have an evaluation of of why we think that's happening I will note that there's a agenda item on the agenda tonight that it appears I'll say in the next um six months that there'll be some significant uh uh projects that are going to take place in our district that would would suggest that the growth is finally coming we've had a couple stops and starts but I believe the growth has finally coming based on some meetings I had prior to Christmas with with different entities so no there are a lot of projects that are starting to take off and even some new projects that were projected to be pushed out a little bit in terms of housing developments and Commercial centers so we do anticipate that that starting next year we should we should see some different numbers um let's see in terms of Human Resources uh we are we do start right up with job fairson so we did have a job fair today uh we probably had more people that were in the support staff um so we continue to look at support staff it was not that we had a ton of people there but but again it's something that we have to do on an ongoing basis um uh with the increase in the minimum wage as of January 1st again it makes competition both for us against other uh entities and other Industries a little bit hard because everybody's moving up uh the starting minimum wage but we continue to do as many job fairs as possible as a matter of fact the district will be taking place at the Ade career Expo and job fair on the February 4th Dr duplicitous will be presenting to candidates as part of the career Expo piece so in the morning there'll be a career Expo and there'll be any number of things talking about jobs and and so we Dr duplicitous have been working with ad and as part of that so that will be beneficial for us to get our name out in front for all of the the all the individuals that are looking for jobs and then we will have the table for our typical meeting of any candidates and potentially offering jobs depending on on or at least pre-screening and asking them to come out and interview with our principals so so that's a positive uh Dr plessis will be doing his presentation on how to become an educator and alternative Pathways to teaching which is a critical a critical issue so we we will have other job fairs besides that and we'll continue to make you aware of them but suffice it to say job fairs and trying to hire people is a full-time job it's not like in the old days where you just did it at certain times during the year it's it's a constant uh if you remember for those board members that were here last spring we had uh brought to the board uh the emergency connectivity fund grant for 700 comb Brooks we were not sure that we would receive that Grant based on initial indications there were some indications that say we might not uh just based on a number of districts across the country that are applying whether we're applying for that this is a Federal grant so in July we came back with you and said we still need the computers so we'll go ahead and take it out of the federal dollars for for the American Rescue plan essers and you approve that well lo and behold and that was done because we were getting more indication that said we were not going to get the money from the federal government on the emergency connectivity fund and they'll all behold right around Christmas or right before Christmas guess what we got a little present under the tree and we did in fact get the dollars from the emergency connectivity fund for those so that just gives us more capacity in our esser's funds because we got this and so that was the intention all along was to was to at least go out after the the dollars for the Chromebooks these are replacement Chromebooks for our students um and uh we just like I say initial indication said we weren't going to get it and then we were shocked when we got it but it's it's a positive Arizona Department of Ed uh wanted to do their recognition of both the CMS and CHS choir for their holiday performance they were invited to and attended the the performance and were very very complimentary of the efforts of our students and especially the hard work of Mr Pennington and Mr Griffin at CHS and cams and again our continued commitment to the Fine Arts noticed by the students from Harmon this evening the Arts are not something that we don't take lightly in this District we continue to celebrate them on a regular basis and we have kids that are doing amazing things in the in the fine arts department we also had a student in student government Merrick Bowles was a freshman he we were just notified this week on Monday that he had successfully completed the requirements to be named a distinguished student leader within the national student council and the National Association of secondary school principal said it's a fairly prestigious award that Merrick was able to go to get we also had at the Middle School Miss Guzman received a grant from the Arizona Farm Bureau select the recipient of the grant for the Arizona Farm Bureau specialty crop and the classroom Grant 40 applicants and 20 were funded by the American excuse me Arizona Farm Bureau and so she was able to receive one of those grants for either using the the grants for teaching with specialty crops through cooking in the classroom or others were incorporating a school garden into taste testing in the classroom so it's a rail specific Grant but it continues to demonstrate whether it's our teachers or our students we continue to Excel on the state the local and the national level so we're very very thankful for those things they're a couple a couple upcoming dates I think there's some students in the classroom or excuse me in the room that'll probably disappointed that I have to tell you that on Monday you do not have to come to school but yes on Monday there is civil rights day so there'll be no school for Monday so that's the upcoming holiday that we have and now I would like to do a couple employee recognitions I'm going to flip this out of order I'm going to ask three people to come up and then I'm going to read something and so if we could have I don't know if they're all here but Miss Cindy Andrews so District content coach in Math Miss Jess Furman a math teacher at the high school and Miss Krista England a sixth grade teacher at um Simonton come up the reason we're recognizing them [Applause] people may not know that there's uh teachers across the country can get What's called the national board certification and in many ways it's like going for your for your Masters or your doctorate there's an intensive program that's uh a year or two years of work on there and outside of the normal classroom day that they received this award um or they get the certification districts across the country do provide additional stipends two individuals receive it because it's so prestigious Miss England is uh getting just received hers and so it's going on the agenda to tonight but we recognize that we haven't had our chance to say thank you to these individuals for the amount of work that they put in in making sure that their craft as teachers is professional and that they're willing to put in the time and effort and this is the stuff that people don't always see the after school work the weekend work the night work The Summer's work to go ahead and and move themselves to become better teachers and so again or the most prestige just National certification that occurs in this country is the national board certification and these three teachers teachers and Ms Sanders is now coach receive those and so we just wanted to congratulate you and thank you for everything you've done truly amazing job [Applause] I can attest to the fact that Ms Furman does a lot of after school work then we also want to know that that this month of January is School Board recognition month these individuals up here I know a couple are just joining us but you have school boards across the country that go ahead and run for office and at no pay this is not a paying job so we can give them a raise if we want because a raise of zero is still zero but they come out and what they do is actually out of the goodness of their heart to do what's best for our teachers to do what's best for our students to do what's best for our community and our parents and it's a thankless job most cases people don't understand what they do but then when the topic is very hot then everybody comes in to tell you what you're doing wrong and so for them to continually come in and devote the time as Mr Beech will find out Ms Tucker's finding out there is a lot of information about school districts it's a very complex organization it's not as easy as people think it's going to be it's not one classroom that you worry about uh we're talking about 600 000 square feet we're talking about 4 400 kids every single day if you add parents into that mix you add probably close to another 10 000 people that are involved in this situation we have our community we run our buses around the district we have kids going across the state across the country to different activities and so it becomes a very Monumental task and again they just quietly do their work and we just want to let them know how much we appreciate yes even you do Shelly quietly in your own quiet way but we do want to want to let them know we have a little gift for them to just say thank you for the job that you do to make sure that our kids and our staff receive the best possible education and have the resources to the job that they do and it reflects in our community so again thank you so very much and let's give you a little bit of a gift [Applause] ah all right thank you nice good sweets thank you very much and that's all for my report so now it's up to the uh staff recognition we will do uh Harmon first no but but all right so uh Madam president members of the governing board Dr Wyman members of the audience uh thank you so much for allowing me to have a minute to present uh Harman so a minute ago you just heard um a really nice musical performance by some of our students so if you guys want to come stand over here in front [Applause] so Mr lavarotta a couple months ago maybe sent a video of a couple of these guys playing The Star-Spangled Banner and so I thought it would be a really great idea to have them come perform for everybody here at the at the board meeting so Savannah is right there in front of Savannah horde and I just want to say thank you to The Horde family I see you guys all right there uh thank you guys for all that you do to support Harman and the district you guys uh Savannah's been in the district since she was a kindergartner and at Harmon so thank you for all that support and great job Savannah you're an awesome kid we also have Stephen Holm and I know Mr Holm is here somewhere he might be on the hallway there he is so again a student who's been in our district since Kinder and as a fantastic Kiddo he just got third place in the spelling bee actually today so yeah so and then Sienna Davis and I think Mrs Davis is in the hallway so another sixth grade student all three of them are sixth grade have been here since Kinder so just great students I really want to highlight respectful kind good kids so got a little treat for you and then Mr lover I just want to say thanks for bringing them and preparing them for the musical performance and I know they've been with you for a couple years so thank you for that so if you guys want to stand right there I just have a little little cookie for you [Applause] she had to guard those all before the meeting because there are a lot of people in the crowd that want to take those okay and now I'm going to recognize some staff members can I have Cheryl Pierce please come up she's Harmon's instructional coach [Applause] stand right here face everybody so um I sent out an email tell the staff members asking them to vote and give feedback on who we should recognize tonight and Cheryl's name popped up many times and so Cheryl came to Harman last year from Kansas Kansas I remember from Kansas and has really made a serious impact on the harman campus a lot of the teachers have about built really positive relationships with Cheryl as she goes in and she helps with the instruction she spends a lot of time in the evening planning with teachers she as part of our mtss team she supports PBIS there's a long list of things that Cheryl does on the harman campus but really is a go-to for teachers and so and it really showed by all the votes that came in and all the feedback that came in for her to be recognized tonight so her and I uh have a lot of meetings together every week and we talk about a lot of planning pieces for the for the school and so just wanted to take a minute to say thank you to Cheryl and all the hard work that she's put in [Applause] she also gets a cookie okay and then um thank you and then a lot of Staff members supported the rise team I had a lot of feedback from different staff members in the rise team and so instead of selecting one person I asked the rice team to come today so if I could please have you guys all come up to the podium [Applause] all right yeah okay so um I've known some of these ladies for quite a long time I was trying to think of how long so I'm going to start on the end I'm just going to say a quick thing about everyone here so miss Chelsea Mo on the end over there uh is also a Harman parent she started with us last spring I want to say last spring and has been a huge support in The Rise program she was very dedicated person worked a lot of time supporting all of our students especially in the three six so she's a rock star and we're really glad that you are still part of the rise team so thank you for being her Erica bajarano is next to her and Erica I'm trying to remember you and Becky you guys have been here for 13 years 13.

uh we talked with the over in Brookfield at St Joe's with the kindergarten for three years years is one year so that money is unallocated I'm sure we have the staff but we were going to have buses go up there every day for three years rent so what we'd like to do is move some of the requests that would have been in the budget into that sr2 plans that we didn't need that would require a state approval a state Ed department has to be an amendment but we think we can get some relief there we we also believe the new reading program might be able to come out of that the way the grant was written and what you're allowed to do that would be a financing source for that and then finally the third strategy is success or three um there are on things in there as well that we're not going to do because the pandemic changed we thought it would be and we think we can put some of the positions that we need so desperately three strategies bring down the answers because we'll we'll have more on that later but that's the plan uh just a couple more here we just um this slide just you know like anywhere else we have everything else we have to buy too just to keep things running you know for 12 000 students were much bigger than a lot of colleges so we have stuff we have to buy and well things running every day there's always new mandates unfunded there's one issue with personal hygiene that's on the list just the regular things the school buses to keep them running there's a little increase there and we can get I think we can get more into that when we do our line item review or if there's a special area we'd like to talk about we could um just a couple more the uh we're gonna budget again repairs on our buildings we went through this with sites and Facilities earlier tonight this does not conflict with what the city does the major capital projects and public buildings these are smaller things if you did that in this year's budget remember we had to cut it a little bit but we have some projects in one I won't go through each one of those given the time considerations Transportation things and things are changing there I'm going to have a better more detailed look at uh like you saw last year line by line of that we're doing more with transportation we have more early dismissals with parent conferences and the way we do that our special ed bid that every year these are the kids that placed in out of District placements you see them in white bands we've been caring school children those prices have gone up primarily because of fuel so that's just an example of look it's a you know it's a 13 million dollar item in our budget it's big it's almost 10 percent um so just something something you do and then finally just put in a word about Esser you know it's been said by some in some City school districts that the the Esser money is what's been keeping them afloat and we're not far off from that here either the money has been used for really to perform critical functions no doubt about whether it is to address the learning loss that everyone knows about or the social emotional needs and what's happened to children micro taxes that's been wrong so to worry about that I know that what was kind of long could answer any questions now or you'd like to proceed we've got a bunch of workshops coming up just a quick question a disadvantaged 48 percent or 68 which qualified three months right is this the student population of 48 or the citizen population these are students those numbers are New Jersey and their student accounts that's that's the 12 000.

[Music] cemetery is not here thanks to me okay so let's go on to the next so uh let's all stand for a pledge of allegiance more large thank you oh present arms I pledge allegiance and the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands one nation [Music] is wrong order arms because right Face Forward March all right so tomorrow Rachel here Michelle here okay here glasses here Lauren here Bridget here Julie here Ralph present Al president the recognition Spotlight your school South Street Elementary thank you foreign thank you good evening everyone happy chairman good evening board members and um came from Pennsylvania she can if you were unfortunately no because the clicker one isn't compatible foreign what can I tell you about South Street um do you know it's past bedtime so I will do my best that I can from South Street I started in South Street back in 2017 and I remember that building very well I'm still there today and it's an honor for me to present to you I am not feeling my best but I couldn't miss this opportunity to Spotlight our school and so there we are one of our greatest accomplishments is back in 2020 we were awarded a National Blue Ribbon School and we are very proud of that moment and as you can see very happy smiling faces in that picture laughs um if you the link we're not going to click it now but again you go to the Department of Education and you see our recognition there you also have as part of that 20 000 to 2020 recognition as a National Blue Blue Ribbon School I was also awarded at Darrell H Bell awarding for outstanding leadership out of the 365 schools that won national food Ribbon School I was one of 12 principals so that's a very proud moment for all of us we were also part of the I had the honor of having the Danbury delegation come and present to me a citation Mr Watson was there and it was a very exciting moment as well uh Ken if you click on number four we also have um if you scrolled up there is our Mrs Coelho who was awarded an alumni for the wswcsu Alumni Association we're very proud of that as well and if you go back to the presentation Ken we have been a school of Distinction for the past three years obviously we don't count the covert years in 2019 2020 and 2022 this year Southwest street was also named as a school of Distinction for both our accomplishments in English language arts and for also for math so we are very proud one of our strongest areas of growth you've seen this um Mrs wanzer was produced back but as you can see I remember when I started here south street was one of the lowest performing schools and now we are one of the top three schools in the Danbury public schools so we are very proud of that look at our fifth grade if you look at South Street kind of can you put the cursor it's the one in the green for last year's s back 2022 considering that we just came out of coven we had 62 percent of students that were able to be at or above in English and language arts actually aside from West Western academic AIS we were number two in the highest of the elementary schools here in Danbury that's a huge accomplishment and if I want to say we really are the best um when you look at Ken the map it's very similar you look at South Street there again last year we did 47 of our students went to the sixth grade at or above Proficiency in s-back and every year we have gotten better and better those numbers actually look better than when we want the National Blue Ribbon School you look at the next one that's our growth and again we have about 75 percent 65 70 of our students in South Street are Ells and as you can see to to be able to accomplish that is amazing because as you can see our growth continues to go up and that's what we need to do to close the achievement Gap what else is good in South Street our school time and culture these are just some examples of the things that we've been able to do this school year we are very creative very artistic and we are very proud of our school uh you have there that be kind we started that in September with a start with Hello uh all the kids took the pictures in that K in the in between the K in the end they were the I and we handed those to the parents we celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month uh at the bottom you see the kids in the green shirt for the um start with hello program and then of course the little characters from iready when we started taking our district Benchmark to get the kids excited uh to start the year already with Tesla and if you go to the next one we have an amazing family and Community engagement I am very blessed we are very blessed in South Street later on I'll show you some of our partners uh in the community but South Street has been able we have a strong PTA an amazing PTA um and these are some of the things again that they've done we have our mascot we've done dances we've done um picnics they've done movie Nights we had a wonderful start of the school year with a back to school for the families they handed out t-shirts they had little uh props but picture props we had a dance this winter some really good dancers in South Street we've had the hockey team the Danbury uh hats what is it called they came they talked to our students just a lot of activities and engaging our families and uh you know it takes a village it's a community and that's what we have in South Street and these are just some of the Community Partnerships that we have in uh in our schools that I can't take credit they come to us they're constantly coming um we have United Way we have unit Union Savings Bank we have Toys for Tots we have the cea holiday Fair this year we have the look and look and live life center Ministries h m as you can see gave us donations we have Jericho we have Knights of Columbus we have the Danbury Bethel Seventh-day Adventist Church we have Odyssey teams Incorporated and we have the most helping Concepts all those people don't contribute a little bit they contribute a lot to our schools for the past two years my students have gotten a blue water bottle every year every single one of them that's donated by the motel planning Concepts um The Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Danbury and the look and live Center minutes Industries donated our baskets we distributed 25 Thanksgiving baskets this year and they're not little baskets they're like a full meal and we had to tell them we didn't need anymore because they would have given us more Knights of Columbus donated this year 120 coats um Jericho donated uh they took cult as well we have Toys for Tots we gave we gave I think 120 baskets of toys this this December um it's just amazing the amount of support that we have the Partnerships and again like I said I wish I could take credit and tell you I go and knock on people's door no they come to us they know we're a great school and they come and donate things for us so if you look at the next slide Ken uh can we have audio there's no fun without audio so but these are the best people that can tell you a little bit about South Street this every year Dr zelita comes in uh carols for my kids in December and so the kids line up in the hallway while the students from Rogers Park Middle School along with the principal Dr Salita and the music teacher they come and they Carol uh various songs and the kids just sing along with them and hopefully you get to hear them foreign [Music] and these are my kindergartners they came and they sang to me how wonderful you are but they also sign language with it for me and I just thought it was so cute [Music] foreign [Music] so you can tell they love pajama day you can go to the next like Ken this is they're my biggest cheerleaders go ahead [Music] um and the next one here Kevin uh This I Gotta Give You can you pause it for a second can obviously I don't go around hearing my phone with me but he he's a kindergarten he came right because I I always go to lunch with all of the lunchrooms I sit with them I eat with them and that's very common for me so they just come up to me and we had conversations he is a kindergarten he came to me and he said but he's good you're gonna hear but I didn't have my camera and I I said wait I'm gonna go back get my phone you're gonna say that again so this is what your the second time he said it of course he forgot and I had to remember so [Music] um so he said to me I'm having an amazing day Mrs Guevara and I say oh why are you having an amazing he said because of the school so I just had to record that and the last one can Carol how was your day thank you all right so they all know that South Street is the best we have a wonderful Community we have a caring loving Community we have there's also a new DHS production in the works with a new director Mr scalfini um they have I believe they haven't decided what they're doing yet but a lot of people are excited to do this and there's that's what he did last year and I was just asking because I don't know what time they get back from a port but especially in this time of year when you first start baseball practice he's just argument this dark way 5 30. right and so I wasn't sure what time he was getting back so yeah I think Eddie's first practice early and then Jose gets there whenever he gets back we've had a motion okay is this whole thing I Miss Rodriguez next item is the approval of additional inflation stipend for nine administrative employees uh Mr Hopkins members of the board um online administrative employees will receive a payment of 200 to be paid from eminol this payment is in addition to the 1200 December stipend and will ensure the majority of staff's take will pay is Overland jobs so my recommendation is I recommend the approval of an additional inflation cycle of 200 to all non-administrative staff I'll make a motion hi Mr Hopkins Mr Rodriguez hi this is Olson hi Luke is approval of inflation which has been for administrative employees uh Mr Hopkins members of the board all the administrators will receive a payment of 1400 to be paid from mnl after payroll taxes take home will be approximately one thousand I recommend the approval of an inflation stipend fourteen hundred dollars to all administrative staff and just uh for clarification that would be Dr shabos and Ms Florissant and not you also why why is that I like um no well the reason being Mr Hopkins on Mr Guthrie is that you're going to discuss on the very next item uh annual performance-based compensation for me as superintendent so I just felt I showed Mr Hopkins I felt it would be appropriate that I would actually just fall under the approval of the 50 of the annual performance-based compensation not an additional Skype through this about those and margins right I mean it's apples and oranges one zero this is the stipend that we gave to everybody sure right why would you be left out of that right that was that was my decision I shared with Mr Hopkins as far as how how you guys are going to talk about a performance-based compensation for me and the next item I understand her yeah it wasn't my idea to say not for him so that we include him in this [Music] by now it's worded I guess we could because it does say all the ministry instead I I would like to see Dr so that'll be part of this why wouldn't we I mean okay and then like I said it's apples and oranges right this is something we're giving to all our employees and then the oranges is it's on in the evaluation right so then um make a friendly amendment to my motion specify that it was all administrative staff in the first or secondary increase um the next item is approval of 50 of the annual performance-based compensation for the solution okay Mr Hopkins members of the board uh this is the explanation approval of 50 of the annual performance-based compensation for the superintendent for achievement of performance goals in the first semester of the 22-20 preschool year the performance-based compensation that may be earned by the superintendent is up to 5 5 100 of the base salary that's how it's stated in the in the contract and so you have you have I believe um I believe you have attachments in here uh the performance goals I believe the first one is is an attachment on this year I believe the first time okay I believe okay it's uh superintendent's goals evaluations December 6th there are three goals there and what I what I did is you have it there in front of you in board docs but what I also did was was put out a hard copy so the Performance Based compensation is based on these three goals that I submitted to the governing board in July in August I'm sorry and so this is what was shared in December with the board I just wanted to just share with you again this is what the performance-based compensation is is on on the three goals um there's around five four to five items in each under each goal and they're providing different artifacts for each item to show that it was addressed that talked and that's what this performance-based compensation is based on and so that's what I wanted to share with you and um this is what the board of Charity of the December meeting that their belief was that the goals were achieved and they wanted to make it 50 percent of that total performance-based compensation for the accomplishment of the goals from July August to December and that being said I don't know if there's anything else Mr Hopkins about that but that's pretty much details for the site without getting in too much detail it was pretty much unanimous to the rewards that he accomplished all the goals that we that he promised us and more like we were all very very pleased and so at the the second attachment is just the goals for this coming year the five goals that after you know discussion and with the collaboration with the Lord the second attachment has the final goals for this 2023 year but just for clarification the performance-based compensation that is right here on this agenda item is based on the three goals in this sheet that I just gave directly hi Mr Hopkins Mr Rodriguez aye Mrs Olson I I'm happy with four to zero the next item is understood activities no way this could uh Mr President members of the board we have students from our senior class they have been hard at work to have this presentation for you Miss Victoria Munoz and Miss Rachel kasaka are here and they have a great presentation to share with you all right Victoria um [Music] to present this um put a permission to travel out of state and overnight to California to to stop in the race don't be nervous to Universal Studios on the background train is just like an overview of everything we're gonna be doing what everything's gonna cost so our first day of work we're we're gonna depart from a home from actually um on the morning of May 11th of 2023 and return on Saturday May 13 2023.

so that you get a much broader Vision or view of what what people think your opportunities are and then we look at a lot of data in this position foreign [Music] this is what we want our students to look like the Navy our schools we want them here here are the skills you want them to have here's what we want them to be um so you have one from Mesa Public Schools and you have one from TV where Mississippi this is where you get a sense of what do you want to accomplish who is our student and what are they what do we want them to have skills with baby husks we would work on that um knowing who you'd want them to be that allows us to say how do we get there what are we going to do to get to that point um and so that would be part of the needs assessment and that would be both poor and project teams we were looking at um surveys you'd be looking at doing interviews you focus groups and there's lots of different ways that we can get information and that needs assessment to decide what and then we work on goal development we would identify objectives you would adopt the plan and in that Basics strategic plan and an implementation timelines appetite dates and controls and targets [Music] that would be the the Strategic team the soccer team the oversight I like oversight better I might change um the oversight scheme to be looking at okay where are we what are we doing how foreign the association so with that I'm on the next slide I want to thank you but I also want to see if you have any questions you tell me we're ready to go when you are um yeah so I think and I don't know what the plan is but I think you'll have to vote on this system but um we are open to students whoever lives I don't know I mean you know why it's going to take your baby or whatever should we get through all of the process but there'll be plenty to do along the way not necessarily for a few times but for the rest of the District administration and um after we're done you'll really have a good idea of where you're going I can tell you that lots of districts that I work with use a strategic plan almost every time they meet when they talk about things on their agenda and that we're doing this because it's kind of our plan and here's where it's part of your plan and we want to articulate with you the reason that we're spending this money or the reason that we're adopting this program whatever it may be or this position right you decide to make a position um so I think it really does give you a really good road map to be actually so in this little teachers also yes they're probably not going to be coming up again because it might give a little bit more work um yeah and I think it just gives them um an idea of where what the board's priorities are and what the district's goals are and really is clear on how very about that so I know my daughter teaches in the district that I was on when she saw our strategic now it's something for a year it's like oh no I think about it when I'm thinking about okay you know what are we looking at what is School sites which you didn't plan based on what the district is so I think it does give them um some data that helps them okay and the left side well you're right that's wonderful thank you so much and my card is in your folder um [Music] from State hello I am excited tonight to introduce you to our counselor um [Music] and so we are very pleased because yes um [Music] this is from the American school council Association and this is um what I follow and this is what they see their wallet excuse me interpersonal skills um the counselors plan for a secondary options higher education um Direction foreign like four to six times um generally a teacher has um referred a student to me or parents I'm looking at their meeting and if a student needs me more than that I would prefer them out for more kinds of types yes um I didn't want it so as a teacher I feel that the student needs to just come to the break um strategies in classrooms with entire classrooms maybe something to happen in the classroom of folks in the community and feel better about the situation that's happening to you Thanos and they also provide positive behavioral strategies for our teachers to um um if I provide advocacy for students at student center community so I'm frequently at IEP meetings or any other type of YouTubers I am also the final four coordinator um I also provide College our students I'll use my future easy which is um the Arizona um the Department of Education suggestions website that we use for students to kind of things about their pictures so we have those accounts college and career opportunities research different types of jobs things like that and in the Middle School level it's just at the very beginning they go to high school they sell deeper into that but at the beginning they're just sort of kind of looking at ideas and I also play the schedule assemblies to support healthy choices this year we've had three assemblies the last one is coming up next month but we've had a suicide prevention assembly we've done a vaginess presentation for parents parents and um they partnered with them and they come and they provide a community so next to slides your data because we all love data right so um this is my last year school data um I had um 255 block-ins and that includes students that just walked in or we requested to see me and then I called them out of class 283 individual accounting sessions and we did 10 new sort of circles and next slide shows uh just this year's first semester data um we've already had 169 markets semester um 130 individual accounting sessions and those are once a week like I said um and they rotate hit them out after you're four to six weeks um and if you see we have more restorative circles we've done 15 already this year because the board is out and the students enjoy it honestly they become an opportunity to speak their mind and mediate a situation that may have happened that could have turned into something on more and students now coming asking for singles sometimes teachers ask for them so that is so the next slide if you go ahead and click on the link that is um web page so this the first um a screen shows my request to be with Mrs dollar there's two Google forms one on the left is for students um the students have access to this in their classroom they can also come to the library they can fill that out it comes right to me in an email and then also um it helps me collect your data because it goes if you all know about um Google forms it creates a spreadsheet right away so I have all my data in here we're seeing that day [Music] also parent and Guardians can request to leave this week um obviously they can also call me my my email and my phone number is also on stage but if they can also fill this out I don't have as many parents to use this but they're always welcome to fill it out I'll get a email to me right away that they want to talk to me and I'll call them or email them they don't have to go through everything but the top at the top um I just have resources for families um I have advice for the activities for teachers to do with students advisory um there's lots of information yeah thank goodness foreign [Music] um providing that program which I think is fantastic which may be your greatest single Greatest Show man unfortunate that we have many carries that number at Heritage Middle School who also support and help students my office is in the library so I do get some help and support in there the behavior coaches and American Social librarian obviously and if I'm not there you know they provide a safe place for students like that but um I said in school counselor that American school counselor Association says that you should have one school counselor for 250 students it is um sometimes overwhelming but um you know other than that it's such a wonderful supportive staff and our kids are great for our families and our parents um you find the kids are struggling a little bit more maybe more emotional definitely been covered um depression things like that so for sure um I think just our world [Music] special we need more we need more support and need more healthy as well as we need more and out of the community it's just always for me for everyone um the answer is yes um that's where a lot of the circles come in um our policy is generally not to get involved if something was done at home and you know we could contact parents and say hey this is going on Instagram um you know you might need to you know check that out um but if it trickled into the school which it does um I do offer those circles where we can sit and talk about I do also um in a lot of my College and Career lessons like that we talk about social media and we appropriately said it and how you should be you know the best way is to talk to someone first before you treat it or Instagram or Facebook but you know we try our best um I don't do any of that because it is Middle School um so I haven't yet partnered with everyone students or just kind of touch on on those sorts of things um but it certainly is a possibility I think yeah yeah mostly I just go in and we talk um [Music] a little bit on the social media look your comments might be uh the effect of the development of our systems at that particular age it's it's um those students who have those um accounts uh it really does affect them they need to be monitored parents really need to know what their lives everything to know the supports that these social medias have a lot of them have ways to block ways to report um ways to uh you know help your child maneuver the world of the social media and I think that's so important for families to know because I think some students just there you go here's your phone Merry Christmas or you know whatever happy birthday and then they're just sort of you know set free and there are some at the middle school age they definitely need to have a boundaries set and um know that it's not the end of the world maybe something happens on social media that will pass but it also is there forever and you do need to you know be aware of the things that you put on there another sets too so I think it's really important to be you know it's really in the hands of regarding the parents and Guardians too at this age to monitor that pay close attention to what they're doing because if you're not what you have to be of their friends we love to know if you might not know that they're on that you know as a parent or Guardians you take that responsibility the tablet or whatever it is so do you think it has a negative effect on that energy I don't know I don't know that I can say that um what about the mental health yes definitely Mental Health social yes definitely social it can be a it could be a positive thing for academics you know use it the right way we teach students how to use um social media on the internet probably away you'll be a wonderful resource but definitely [Music] and you know my day we help on the phone we talked and talk face to face um there's a lot of kids who have relationships with other humans and that's something which is not going to go away right we have to help support them because or how much do you see I think we have a pretty great support at our school um in my experience is right home because I know that the parents are responsive and and will you know help their childhood like that so and I've had good experiences so far the ones that I you know had to encountered pretty good support I think there's just you know a lot of Education how they do it what do you mean so I think you just have to continue parents yeah absolutely you know the children can be assessed yeah those are definitely all things um thank you great items Seven Seas all right should be in there somewhere there we go um kicked off with enrollments we are up 38 ABM over last year there's a chart on the second of third page that kind of shows you where we're at compared for the last few years I anticipate we're going to kind of kick up again it seems like after the New Year we get changes in enrollment and at each remains and so I anticipate that same level or increasing a little bit it you can see that when I put it on there we're at age 76 so about three quarters to our 100th day which is the Benchmark for our ABM I want to give a little bit of time that they're in a corner of the board at the asba meeting so I just maybe a minute or two from each of you that plans and it was Mr Fogle and Miss Thomas and the snowboard that went through the ASB I don't know if there's anything that you wanted to share about what you saw or experienced or um sorry [Music] um one of the breakout sessions that I went to was presented by our own Cindy Daniels and it was about building Partnerships in rural communities we talked about the Education Foundation of allergies I knew everything she was talking about I'm going to tell you it was so engaging it was the best session I went to and I'm not just saying that it really was it was engaging it was thoughtful it was not provoking is fantastic thank you so much for representing our school as well as you can I do want to say she's been asked to do that same presentation that there's a whole rural schools Association conference as well I would just add this indeed if you were not just you were not a presenter you were an educator and that was with how you were different than most everyone else good teacher I'm a little risky I couldn't tell but yeah [Music] and our children living in it as they were even impressive you know they have more things available to our kids here is more [Music] accessible and depressive yes I think I go there to so the inspirational parts of the program the gentleman nonetheless in the past the United States did it for me they did that because it just did just that so it was good in that sense and then I think spending time to give you the support and then sort of building relationships with board members and other people in the profession I think that's how it's most useful to me I agree it was nice to be able to just talk to Mike and know that we're not really like struggling with that so we're not the only ones and yeah [Music] I think I learned a lot I can't remember everything I learned but um you know the different different workshops and different speakers [Music] um but sometimes I feel like oh really anyway so you know I know area but still um important [Music] yeah projects update so there's a list of 10 projects here I want to just pick out a few other teachers who are actually going to talk about later um the football field bathrooms are continuing and so we they started and they're starting to get you know we have Foundation I think gone in and I saw some Plumbing stubs out and all kinds of stuff going on with that so that's exciting I'll be with you this is a big deal like I want to go down there we need to have a bathroom yeah we travel all the way around yeah [Music] um we do have um the you actually Cindy will sign a terms and conditions for a East gym weatherization which is basically kind of seal up the East gym so that it doesn't leak there's also some addition work I think you guys are going to close up the windows or change out the glass block and some other stuff and then not on here but kind of related to The District AC project part of the AC project is to seal up the roofs and because of the fire that we had at the high school they had to separate out that building but there's a um a roofing project that you also will find for the weatherization which is filling up the roof at one of the buildings at the high school so you can get that back to a condition that can be occupied you know there's the other other projects on there uh aggregate expenditure limits um I met with Senator Bennett and representative peterelli who are the um the respective um Chambers uh chairs of their education committees and um I uh there was also an article in the Arizona Republic today that addressed this I think that the general consensus is that it will pass last minute So lately you know last year it was the last week in April or in February sorry has to be passed by March 1st that seems to be the general consensus will work to make sure that that happens hopefully sooner rather than later but again and I was talking to somebody today about this the aggregate expenditure Linux limits the amount of money that all districts not Charters the school districts can't spend even though the money's in the account it doesn't mean you don't get the money it means you can't spend the money that you have the account and so that's that's what's um unfortunate there's also I think a positive move to try to put something on the 2024 ballot that would change that that would be the earliest that it would it could happen um it has to go to the vote of the people it's a change in the Constitution this is a special question you know then um so the idea is hopefully to kind of maybe do a waiver and then at the same time do a fix it would go as a referendum but we're gonna have to go through this again next year just because it's um intelligence that won't happen until November is I've made it clear it's very stressful it's not good for kids it's not good for staff when staff are worried about their jobs they're not teaching to the the ability that's been made clear to them this is a political issue and there's the local Capital as part of their boat and that's kind of what I think is driving this um you know there was supposed to be a special session a bunch of other stuff got piled on to it the special session didn't take place last November I you know all I can say is it's gonna be my job to be other super tennis jobs um you know the asba is part of this the ASA this is the school administrators we're all going to be working towards trying to get this taken care of because it's not it's not good for kids it's not good for staff it's not good for communities you know we're the largest employers 300 over 300 paychecks go out on a bi-weekly basis imagine if you have to take three million dollars we're over a billion dollars out of all right Arizona that that would be the economy so um anyway that's had a little and the other questions on the senator Journey keep you updated as best I can um I can say that uh you know Governor Hobbs needed a party for her although she has no voting it's all that you know she I think somebody said she could use her only but that's the extent of her involvement in this this is strictly two-thirds majority vote in both the house thank you any other questions uh hiring teachers just want to kind of let you know we're getting into that hiring season uh and Cindy and I were supposed to go to the U of H doctor we are wait listed on that we have two administrators going to the NAU job fair we have two administrators went to the ADT job fair which is a phoenix had takes over for the I guess she doesn't have one at least I know other people to the Phoenix doctor um so we're working hard we have we have administrators that that uh do a really good job in recruiting and so that's already started we've got openings we anticipate openings we'll talk about a plan that may create a lot of other openings uh and so we're working on that um as we as we go uh Capital lawsuit um I've been emailing you all about the kind of the the some some activity there the lawsuit trial was supposed to start on Monday two months ago the plaintiffs which the district is a link building that lawsuit along with three other districts and some people call them alphabet boots and education groups um two months ago they filed that type of group filed a motion saying to delay the trial to allow the incoming Governor or Administration time to evaluate philosophy since they were a dependent that was the ninth so they were supposed to start Monday last week um attorney general uh Hayes good to see almost identical motion that was approved so now it's in the lane 35 days a status conference that takes place in March to kind of identify things likely going to be a year out before anything happens the idea is the the governor's office the Administration has said we may be able to take care of this job so that may happen we'll see what was going on the school facilities board which is one of the main kind of the the I don't want to say culpits but the main reasons why the lawsuit took place is under the auspices of the governor it's um in the executive branch of the Arizona government so she the governor can make changes as she sees fit as long as it's legal and so those changes may take place and we'll kind of wait to see what goes on but um we it's been on hold our attorneys feel that it's a good thing and so we're just kind of going as is and I don't have to testify with something uh next we have the calendar and a couple dates and we'll talk about this but please put on your calendar February 22nd and 23rd at 4 45 we will have the principal candidate dinners one of the high school will be in the uh Colonial Arts room the one at the middle school will be in the cafeteria yes that's a Wednesday and Thursday so if you want to meet the case or have you meet the candidates otherwise but this is an opportunity for you to come I know that um a couple of you a couple of you participated last year uh and got to sit down with the the real principal candidates and kind of just get to know them a little bit so I don't have a free dinner and you'll get three to the internet you can be dinners this time [Music] okay so just make sure you put that on your calendar and there will be a community meet and greet afterwards if you can't make dinner um there'll be an opportunity for you to uh participate in that from six to seven at the respective numbers that's all I have for my report item 71 my financial reports foreign a quick look at the month in for December 31st of 2022 the current fiscal year 50.4 of the year had gone or days ago 46 percent age our Capital One uh funded this one 23 spent that we've been bankrolling some money in our adjacent waste fund 620 for a couple projects we'll give you the teachers project and including the Del Rio parking Paving projects yeah a quick look at a couple of the funds any any comments or questions on the operating finder John what's the schedule at Del Rio Paving that's what it was supposed to be done before 100 so we did have a great great question you didn't have a slight window there back in October when the board awarded that and between say Mr chair of our facilities director is here between some miscommunications between our contractor in the city and other changes in the weather they decided to look at Spring break I guess right it's been architecturally resign it and that's what you don't want to pay for this kind of work yeah [Music] so uh is it under contract or still waiting for a date still it's under contract when uh basketball company and we also have a contract for uh architect design but it will happen right period yeah what what no one's willing to make a guarantee but yeah right now I know the planet has had its purchase order and his contract issued by the district and as a sub for the Paving contractor for about a month now and I have not got word that he's continued because there's quite a few little design issues how to use Russia District it's water issues yeah no it's just that a lot of that water as she flows off the property that's on the south side and goes over the road right and so they want us to they they want us to be able to direct it properly and away and so that that's where really the engineering is coming from back to the city since it hits our property we've got it [Music] did they continue but we'll definitely keep you updated contractors exactly the goal is here I think there's no questions I'd like to take a look at the cash fund balances which looks like cash funds it's a vertical page but from about six calls on it and all these are on the cash basis of fun 500 plus 515 our riders in October that it was to use 550 anymore we get almost three thousand dollars a month for the cell tower Revenue they want us to put all that in front of 500.

oh oh gosh okay so 12 and 16. okay so they have been in the Rise program for many many years uh since before I was at Harman and um so Erica has done a fantastic job she's very dedicated person has been her eyes she cares about the kids a whole lot she also really supported during the circle time in both classes when we were struggling with personnel and really having support in the classroom for all of those little little kiddos and so just wanted to say thank you for your dedication to the rice program um and then Becky right next door is 16 years so 16 years but maybe 13 in Rise yeah 13 rise so again super dedicated person her kids are now graduated they went through um this district and so um she is someone who's super reliable and as really cares for kids too so thank you for being a part of rise next we have Laura Brewer who's another parent at Harmon and so she was recruited I think by Chelsea so um so just wanted to say thank you to her as well she's been part of our K2 rise classroom we have two classrooms K2 and three six so I want to thank you for being there and putting in as much time as you're able to so um Avi I just wanted to say thank you she is our rise teacher she started with us in October yeah October and so she is overseeing both classes right now and so just want to thank her for putting in all the time and dedication that you have with supporting all of our kiddos in that program so thank you and then we have Melissa next to her Melissa Stevenson and so I actually recruited Melissa on the sidewalk during dismissal she was one of she's a parent Harmon too and I said hey we really need a crossing guard do you have a little bit of time before and after school and so then eventually she made her way into rise and was working part-time in rice and then now she's full-time as of January so I just want to thank her for her dedication too and she would come in as much time as she could just to support kids so I appreciate that and then Carol is right next to her so Carol's been with the program for a few months as well and has been a paraprofessional in there and supporting the program and shows up every day and so thank you Carol for being there as well and then we have Pat here on the end Pat arrives so Pat arrives prior to I'll pull into the parking lot and I see custodial Tony was there and I would see her because lunch staff and then I would see another car and at first I thought who's getting here this early I don't even know who this person is and it was Pat she was getting there early before way before seven she comes in and she does all the schedules she starts cleaning and organizing she is puts in a lot of time and dedication and so I hope that I am as active as you are when I'm your age I really do so I appreciate all the dedication so these ladies have put in tons and tons of time there's there's so many things I could say but uh we do have two blue apples so I thought we'd put one in each classroom and I also have a certificate and a cookie for you guys so thank you so much [Applause] laughs thank you so much for the opportunity Dr goosby with comb Center for success foreign president esteemed board members superintendent colleagues in our Combs community I stand before you a grateful and very proud principal of the comb Center for success this is our third year that we've been in existence and we are extremely grateful because as we've gone about building a new school in the district we are so grateful to every department and every division in this District who has reached out to us and helped us we are honored to be the district's alternative school and we continue to grow and evolve this year we're really excited this semester we have some Hands-On classes we're doing creative writing and we have an art class where we're doing a mural we also are expecting some chickens to come in so that we can do our life cycle in biology and have some other fun things so that our kids aren't just on computers learning but they're doing Hands-On learning as well and we love the challenges and rewards of being a small school where everybody knows your name and we do know the names of all of our kids but I could not do this without an incredible staff of Educators who are the right people for this work my teachers are creative compassionate Innovative and unselfish and focused always on what is best for our students and I'd like to just take a moment to be able to share with you one small program that we do at our school advisory and Mrs Gratz as it is often at our school Mrs Jody Gratz is our English teacher she's our social studies teacher she's our creative writing teacher and soon to be our Lifetime Fitness teacher so she's going to talk to you about advisory and her team team graph so stop thank you um actually it's a perfect job for me because I could turn my hand in a lot of different pots and and I like that there's no boring time um we're gonna I wanted to talk with you a little bit about what we're doing with advisory at at Combs Center for success and we take our advisory time with our students very seriously um a lot of the students that come to us have not had a lot of success in a traditional educational environment they've struggled and so we believe that it is important to empower our students by helping them to understand all their strengths and weaknesses so that they can work to fill in the gaps and really get down to brass tacks and let's get them across the stage and our advisory we we concentrate on goal setting for the for the students and it's not just Pie in the Sky you know oh well my goal is to graduate it's not just to graduate it's how you're going to do it and how you're going to be held accountable for that and I think that the reason that we're part of the reason that we're so successful right now is because our kids really have skin in the game they really are putting themselves out there and they know that we are too okay um we keep data notebooks for our students it's an evolving thing we we come up with new ideas and changes and that kind of thing for the for the students and we really utilize this program called major Clarity and it's this year is the first year I've ever had an experience with it and I'm like holy cow I could sell the crap out of that in the industry but um it's a really really good program and it really helps students to be able to track where they are where they want to be and really Empower them to take charge of their life thank you [Applause] so in our process at Combs Center for Success we run three different programs we have an in-person middle school and high school we also have an online program and we usually serve around 200 students it kind of fluctuates as students graduate first semester we had 12 students graduate and leave us so we're currently taking new students in and continuing to grow our program and I'm very honored to be able to honor two of my staff members tonight and we got together as a staff all eight of us and kind of talked about what happens at our school and who we are really truly grateful and I'd like to ask Mrs cambites if you'll come up here the prize [Applause] I know um Mrs Virginia cam bites has been with us for the past year and a half she came in because I tricked her into being our receptionist because I told her that that's what the job was but she's the only person in the office so she's everything she's the records Clerk she talks to the cafeteria people and orders the lunches and hands them out to our students she does all the filing she calls parents for attendance and attendance at our school is a bear because you have to put in the minutes and stuff and we're so grateful this year that our technology department helped us make it more streamlined and we're still working on that but Virginia is a breath of fresh air she has great professional customer service treats our families terrifically she knows the name of every kid when they walk in the door and when they're missing and she calls the kids and you know like when we have a student that goes home sick she calls and makes sure that they get there and that's what you need at every school and we are so blessed in this District to have employees who care that way about students and the blue Apple represents the blue of our district but it also represents that Apple for the teacher because it's a way of saying hey as Educators we really respect and appreciate you so for Miss Virginia cam bites our blue Apple for our staff and a small gift thank you [Applause] okay the fun part about doing this is [Music] um oh we get we get to surprise people and um all of us kind of trick them into coming to the board meeting and they don't know what to expect so I also get to recognize one of my teachers all of my teachers are rock stars but tonight I would like to have Mrs Mary Wyman come up she is our elective teacher [Applause] she's our electives teacher on our campus and she is also our supervisor for our online learning students and our connection to our students who are online um Mary is amazing at building relationships with students she is the student Whisperer she is also someone who reaches out to every staff member on campus whether they're from the cafeteria if they walk into our office she's like how can I help you what can I do for you she's the first person there in the morning if I don't beat her there but that's very rare along with Mr gourd and they're like the first they open the doors for our kids they open the gates they open the bathrooms because as a small staff like I said we do everything she is adaptable in her time at home center for Success she has been our first second and third grade teacher she's been our high school math teacher she's been our electives teacher she's currently teaching Spanish and working on a mural with the kids in art and she's our online Guru of Edgenuity she's a Visionary because she sees always what can happen and she's always saying to me Pat how about if we do this and and she'll tell you all the time what do I say Mary [Laughter] or maybe later you know but okay but I'll tell you two things and then um she makes peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for the kids every day who don't have a lunch and I'm not talking about one or two sandwiches I'm talking 12 to 15 sandwiches and the kids line up to get her peanut butter and jelly sandwich and if I don't if when she wasn't there and I volunteered the kids didn't want the sandwiches laughs and then the other thing which just really touched my heart was um she had this idea of gingerbread houses because some of our students had said that they never did that so the kids at in our advisory um with all the teachers had the option to come in and try to build gingerbread houses and I won't tell you all the stories about them but they had a blast and a lot of kids had never done that and honestly a lot of the staff members had never done that and we went ran out to the store and bought them and took them home to our own stop so for all those reasons Mary Wyman is our blue Apple teacher this year thank you and you know I don't like attention it's amazing now I'll cry to work there she's a phenomenal leader I'm very blessed to work there our team is great we all work together really well and it's those kids are amazing so I appreciate it thank you very much [Applause] doctor will do student of the month you're on Jen Madam president board members attentively congratulations Kyler and could I have Leighton Richards from Simonton come up thank you at this time a great opportunity for parents to take pictures of their students we'll take a quick break and then we'll continue on with the board meeting thank you thank you very much hello thank you okay we're gonna go ahead and move um on to well I need I guess I need governing board members have anything to um report for us or no no okay um I do you do oh I um went to a little bit of the teacher development last week and they did such a good job at um doing that they provided lunch for the teachers which I think is really great I think it shows appreciation to the teachers and I think you know they'll enjoy that too and so I think they did a really good job with with that all right awesome good job team CSI right so I want you to be CSI though Maybe CSI San Tan Valley I don't know okay c c i a which is even yeah whatever okay so we're going to move on to public comments do we have any no no public comment none often oh awesome all right um now we have um action item well we have consent agenda are there any questions on such agenda I do have one question clarification right uh under 7.8 the bid requests and proposal is that for audit Services is that to replace or I don't know replace I guess what happens uh Clayton Larson and Allen that we currently have or Clifton I'm sorry is it possible that should they enter into the bidding process they could be selected again they could not okay all right thank you that that's just State Statute as applies to school districts that you have to rotate through your your auditor every five years oh okay foreign that's all I had all right so any other questions if not I will take a motion I moved to approve the consent engine in full second all in favor hi hi hi I'm motion carries five to zero all right so we're gonna go to uh 8.1 discussion consideration approval of the 2122 uh J O Combs Unified School District revised annual uh financial report good evening Madam president members of the board Dr Wyman community members remaining staff our physical year as you know ends on June 30th however some of our federal and state grants we participate in do extend until September 30th their reporting is due by December 31st after our AFR upon preparing the title 10 the homeless education grant completion report we found that expenditure Corrections were required so we re-reconciled with the Pinal County school office and we need to obtain your approval to submit a revised budget to or revised annual financial report to Ade so we ensure correct compliance in our reporting the completion report actually only impacted three funds two of them are federal projects that's our title 10 and our migrant Ed East Valley Consortium sub Grant and then our indirect cost attached to the agenda I provided you with a detailed listing of each cell that was changed on the annual financial report that is a requirement for Ade to summarize we moved 10 422 dollars in extended and expenditures from our title 10 Grant to the migrant Ed subgrant both Federal projects the changes were reflected on page five of the annual financial report when we made that change it reduced our allowable indirect cost by 484.94 we reversed that entry and that impact was reflected on page six of the annual financial report these are then rolled up into the summary report page and you'll notice that since title 10 and the migrant Ed are both Federal projects the expenditure change for the actual entry was a zero impact however we do see a change in lines 27 and 45 for the indirect cost now with that being said Mr Delena and I both hate all the rounding however you'll notice that online 45 the amount Changed by 483 dollars line 27 Changed by 484 dollars that is because the page is a forced rounding and it depends on the additional items that were within that category it is just the same entry though when we were doing this we also found that there was a 270 dollar duplicate entry in our auxiliary operations fund so we took the time to make sure that we were in compliance accurately reported that and you'll notice that that change only appears on the summary page and that is on line 36.

you can that's how many of the 12 000 already I just thought it was a higher percentage maybe Kelly is here right sorry can you repeat the question again I was out of the impression this is from our economically disadvantaged students was a population approximately 65 to 68 and I see on this study it says 40 48 right now and uh just am I mistaken on that 60 because I've got that higher number qualified as for student lunch is basically for our kids because what's the percentage of Freedom reduced Dodge however I can tell you the city of Danbury is prepared once again to actively advocate for a bill to be right now behalf of Danbury to support the acceleration of the East on the ECS funding helps to address and mitigate some of those challenges that you're talking about and so I was in a meeting earlier this afternoon where I was sharing we have the highest percentage of English Learners in the state of Connecticut into further underscore that point we have the second most number in English Learners in the state of Connecticut and as with New Haven it's Waterbury Hartford in all these big districts that's how many students we have meanwhile we don't have any additional funding to support those students and so the acceleration of the funding will serve as a major resource for us at this time and if the bill is supported we would instead of waiting I think the year of the increase in for the ECS fund is 25-26 in acceleration would mean the world to our budget right now because it would be able to get either 17 million dollar bond which would help to offset a lot of these challenges that we're going to talk about thank you good questions so there are several puzzles right now to accelerate the education while sharing formula I propose one but I know I know others have proposed similar I'm hopeful this year you know however however it's done I'm actively advocating for our school district I'm in Hartford so you all know and I hope you know you'll reach out to me as a resource for anything as well we will also that lady at the city boy she mentioned that they were also you can't hear you sorry I'm sorry sorry uh at the Citywide PTO there was a lady from uh Windham or even and her organization was petitioning to accelerate as well the um strategy hurricanes yeah just a couple of points um okay I multiply level agree um I am a little less infused tonight than I was on Monday so thank you for going over this again and in a little bit more detail and also for providing the food book I really appreciate that um I think what um got us stuck last year were the two different numbers you know of our spending plan um where we proactively looked at savings and efficiencies and came up with this puzzle um so I think just when we're out presenting to the public um focus more on just our overall bottom line ass so that there's no confusion as to as soon as before and then also in when we're presenting to the community and the city Side this presentation isn't to have the one Monday night was very heavy on uh Talent acquisition I thought it was just like it's great for us but just maybe too much for for um in my opinion to share your own and I was also glad to see a breakdown of the energy percentage because looking at just a one line of the 38 was weird for me they're all very different so I appreciate that in any more detail you can and we're there is pictures um Monday night you were talking about putting the monies from the vacant positions in the Brookfield money I think was it sr3 to spend it this spring for fall did I hear that right there are two potatoes professional scenario that you're talking about in this general fund budget just to make sure we close down together all right the general fund budget the school budget that's where the unfilled positions are primarily power Educators and their benefits that money that won't be spent would like to come to you and ask for a transfer into the applying for computers and computers over in the Esser brand off budget is a field plans were and that's where the monies are undesignated and that's what we'd like to use for the reading program maybe for some so quick quick thing so the next sort of important Workshop when are we going to get the bottom line ask Ed if I said because that after me well not well uh right now we're suggesting it'll be 150 million you may want to add or subtract over the next month and then we we have your vote on February 8th I think it's a regular your first meeting in the month two at City Hall at the 14.

it was actually going towards the benefit of itself called service it's not it's not quite like the pth steel renting a building there's a little bit closed down between 5-15 and we've moved all that cash flows in there over to you'll see that uh 527 pasta one with our preschool program yes they've got a little sister Grant I would call it at La Casa it's it's I think the first is 67 000. over a month so this year is going to go we've got the first payment and then Wisconsin um so you know is our Tino after school Advantage which is our um after school one year foreign designing those because they've got to have triple approvals that significant contract terms of conditions that they pay if we receive them report s just so you know that we don't have an activity by the count or which is what would you do next month I moved to um [Music] item nine a is our K5 literacy endorsement support and this is recently Arizona Department of Education and State Board of Education determined that all K5 teachers should have a literacy endorsement attitude certificate a way to obtain that is through two separate three credit courses um ones about the science of reading and work about literacy assessment construction and things like that so some of the teachers had that in the course of their preparation program we have a few teachers So reading endorsed already and new students graduated from University to all kinds of course so we do have staff going there with very kind of there's a highball on it if everybody needed the two courses um because it's something that is required for them and it benefits us we're making a recommendation that if they take it through Yavapai College of course when we have a passing grade we'll reimburse them we'll have so many materials and we see it as a way to support them encourage them we advertise rolling out the first course online and they're doing a big twice in the semester that they've compresses so we wanted to thank you and ask for your approvement without we see it as a way to support teachers because it seems like a very wise investment in a professional adults [Music] treatment yeah what we're looking at is we're thinking not the most you know for tuition costs but we're thinking like that's going to cost about 24 times this is an action item get a motion to approve I will make that motion for educational books for the two of my employers thank you item 9B um our hiring processary so um you know we had a had a good conversation at Eric did this afternoon going over the same information we do have two principles that are one's transferring and one is retired maybe transferred a little bit deeper in several but as a nurse but um you know that that's it's a I told the staff this is the most important job that me as a superintendent has is the higher principles and so we take it very seriously uh last year we did we got very lucky we're able to hire Dr Moody and we're using the uh very similar or exact same process to go through the the principal searches for for the high school at Middle School and what that will involve is uh we'll have a and I'll let um Cindy describe what the committee looks like but we'll have an interview committee it will do an interview process uh I will be with the committee at the beginning of the process like next week but when they actually do the interviews I will not be there um I do it one-on-one interview with the candidates and typically that is in my truck I drive around the community so that they understand what the community looks like uh from through the windshield it will also do a school tour so they'll be able to see the campus there's kids around they'll get it kind of hopefully at least a cursory feel of what the the atmosphere of the campus is like and then um they will go and they will have a after school they're all the candidates will be in the library to do a staffing degree we collect comment cards so the staff have input on that that time that they spend with them hopefully you guys will be able to have dinner with them after that once dinner's over and we'll go back to the library and do a community and that will all be publicized so that the community can come I need potential candidates so that's what the day looks like I'm going to pass it off the sentience you can share a little bit about the the committee work yeah the boardroom all day on Wednesday and on Thursday so what I did was during break I emailed Mrs Bryce and this wolf and asked them to support some potential recommendations for the committee and the committee's comprise the people who build certain roles in their school environment so it could be a perfect parents we have parents on the committee it could be classified employees the principles administrative assistants is that someone who works very closely with them an assistant principal if business in principal intends not to apply for either job um classified employees that someone who has the perspective of our classified employees certified employees someone from special education so in the high school's case we have an additional role which is someone to represent CTE since that's such an important part of our campus um the school will be sitting in on the Heritage process so she sees some of the ways that we've done things she begins to transition into her role as in HR but anyway that's the makeup of the community why they were designed that way on purpose to all participate I facilitate what the committee does so what we do is we start our day by talking about the good things at their campuses so it gives everybody a chance and even though they all know each other really well gives people a chance to you know break the ice and really start thinking about why they're probably like where they work and then we move into where would we like to see that particular School in four years and so and then I have that broken down in this is very specific categories for them like academics both culture facilities things like that so you have some very specific things that we look at so it's not just sort of a free fall on you know where we want to be in four years but that's really a guided process then the next thing that we do is we talk about we review different leadership qualities and you look at keywords and teachables the scriptures for those qualities to determine what vegetables qualities will help the next administrator be able to realize those goals so we're not just when we meet on interview today we don't go wow that guy had a really cute bow tie you know and um you know so we have certain things that we're looking for so it's a it's a precise process in order to help the people on the committee look for qualities in a candidate that will help them Envision where the school is going to go the next thing that we have lunch there you'll know that the next thing that we do go in the afternoon is work on refining interview questions that will help us Baron out those characteristics so we don't you know well it's nice to ask people what their hobbies are their hobby may or may not help us reach our goal as a campus so that's the process that we undertake as the selection committee one of the other things that I explain to folk and help them really absorb is that they're not making the decision because I want that weight off their shoulders as when you go back to campus as a peer you don't like if we hire a dud you know and everything like gosh I can't believe that's going to be picked you know or whatever or you don't want dissension if all the committee couldn't agree and because it's a sizable enough to me you know later on a lot people saying well I supported this person or I really wanted this other person so we've made it clear for the culture and the positivity on the campus that they're making observations they're making recommendations so on the interview date we'll take turns you know around Robin uh round robin and Matt whatever it is and asking the questions and then what we'll do is um after each interview we have a chance to kind of process what we've heard and if they they have their questions but they also have a guiding sheet for them as interviewers that list those characteristics so when they're listening to responses they're recording this response with this characteristic so at the end of the day they have a sheet with the names of the candidates they can write their comments There's an opportunity for them to rank order them and then all the notes that they made along with that sheet will be handed off to Mr Shull now it was interesting because they also have an opportunity to provide additional feedback based on the staff maintenance rate and the community meet and greet and I could tell you from experience not just with Mr Beauty's interview process but with lots of interviewing processes that I've read in the past they learn different things about the people in that scenario and we would encourage them to write on Parts um maybe that their Impressions have changed a little bit because some people interview exceptionally well but don't necessarily interact with the staff very well or there seems to be not much chemistry or they lose the enthusiasm after the sales pitch you know or whatever it may be and so we also give them opportunity at the end of the assassinate degree and at the end of the community meet and greet we all get together again for a few minutes and say is there anything more you would like to say is there anything you would like Mr Sheldon or is there anything that you would like to report differently for us at this point I've had people ask me may I have my rank order sheet back so I can change my range order for sure if that's important to you and you feel strongly about that absolute that's why the process so that is a physical on January 17th which is a week from two skills uh like most of the week now right Tuesday the high school committee will continue on Wednesday the middle school committee will Human Bean and then at the end of February so the 22nd we will interview for a high school on the 23rd for another year for Heritage so we're compressing it and I when I talked at Heritage today I talked about why are we like let's get this going right part of it is if everybody thinks it's hard to find teachers it's much much harder to find administrators I think if the you know the climate in our country hasn't convinced people that nobody wants this job over the last three or four years nothing's ever going to convince them of that right um it's been hard times for administrators and governing board members and hard decisions and difficult things and people think you know and I didn't share this at Heritage but I'll share it with you one of the things that we have noted is as teacher pay has increased it's close the gap significantly between what administrators make and teachers need teachers work 148 days a year the administrators were 33 more days some teachers have higher daily rates for the teachers and administrators they just make less annual salary because they work fewer days and and we have had people tell us that internally who we think would be extremely viable candidates for our administrative jobs you know what with all the raises that we've had I'm comfortable where I am financially and my family life and my time it is more important to me than pay and so it's been one of the story of unintended consequences of improved teacher pay but that that Gap closing between administrator teacher pay has driven far fewer candidates to administrate roles so if that's a curiosity and something for you as individual board members to knock around in their heads forward with things like strategic planning but the other part of that is that as we um you know look at this the timeline is suppressed as well because we want an opportunity to kind of first jump on the very best people right um and we want to make those decisions and be a law for contracts prior at the March board meeting because we intend to offer as Mr Schultz said staff contracts or teaching contracts at that same meeting and people like to know who they're going to work for and so as a purpose of the staff those things are all done settled and all that business so um to bring you up to speed currently we've had three applicants um one the Standalone algorithm for the high school one applicant who applied for each campus and another applicant who was a standalone for the Middle School it's been posted for about a week and a half um but I would also tell you that people start feeling that out during Christmas break um and I anticipate that after a long weekend you know people have time to put some time into applications over a long weekend so I anticipate that we'll see some more application traffic you know that's next week where it's on so that's kind of overview of the process the planning data a day that those two days that will happen next week when the high school home with Heritage those are really really fun yes because you get an opportunity to talk about all about campus but the popular recommended if you committed to the process are also people who tend to have their pulse on you know what's going on and there are people who believe that we will have longevity so they'll be here over the course of the administration or their people who have been here for a while and sort of have that longitudinal view of their campus so those are some of the things and they get a strong caution and admonishment from me try to use my best mom face and um that while they'll know who the candidates are ahead of time they are not to research them in any way shape or form that's the purpose of the interview that's the purpose of the materials the person submits related to Mr Shoal with cyber stock with people and learn more about them because a lot of times what people might find in their attempt to research vote isn't a balanced perspective of who the person is you also want to add that I gave this warning to the Heritage staff today okay I you know I take I look at the recommendation of the committee I look at the the comment cards from the staff I look at the comment cards from the um meet and greet uh that the public meet and greet I know at when we were interviewing for the Del Rio principal ship the administrators at the meet and greet were kind of huddled and we were having a discussion on what their payments were and so I take that into consideration but just because I didn't pick what they wanted doesn't mean I didn't hear them I'm very careful about taking everyone's input into consideration along with my own I'm going to spend an hour with the person one-on-one and you know I have to decide what's best for the school district especially the school and what's best for the students and the staff and so it may or may not agree with what a particular person wants but I lead to caution them that they have been hurt I look I've made sure to consider every medical prediction we're not just we're doing two and so it's it's uh we're just trying to maybe when I say combine like I said we have one candidate that's gonna have to interview two full days they're gonna have that same process twice right if they're if they're on the if they're they can make the cut they'll be going through that process two years ago two different groups the other groups that will be interviewed um I would um it's not hard um when you get to search for Del Rio to win over the pool to corresponding Technologies and then one except for another position prior to the interview process so we lost one we believe look at that you're welcome itemized all right so if you recall the state legislature did not establish the budget that didn't give us a whole lot of time to plan for the new school year we did we were able to give some raises and we were very conservative in the amount of races that we gave um again not knowing how we were going to be impacted so we've had some time to evaluate and we believe that there's about 1.2 million dollars right now that um it's outside of the reports that are in here but encumbered for this plan and so um what the what I want to do is present this plan to you I also want to take it in the end of the month and take a see I can get some appointment and then come back in February for you to approve either this plan or something similar on how to best allocate that definitely okay so um if you turn to the there's a Sprint it's a spreadsheet it's just money you've already allocated um you've already hired a maintenance one and a maintenance due and that was for us to complete our own construction projects like the bathroom right also you know a lot of those projects on that list are 10 projects of you know half of them were projects that would be completed by by this stuff uh you did four permanent sub positions already by the way that is Kudos from the principles could not say enough about the those positions so you know you you know we've that has had an immediate impact which is uh I'm glad it did and that's the whole purpose for them um you uh there's going to be a couple positions of actually four positions but two groups of positions that we'll talk about next and then that you may or choose to approve or not to approve them so that's that's on there as well which is uh security guards which we discussed at our October meeting about the need for security guards and we'll also share with you the need for uh English language admin support um and why we think we need that so so three of these groups you've already approved two more you will that would be for the remainder of the school year what what would what would happen there that's about two hundred and forty thousand dollars okay what we're proposing for next year is to maintain those those positions you've already approved an HR position an HR director position so that's also would be part of that so it's the maintenance one two HR permanent Subs continue with the security continue with the EL support along with 17 teachers okay that comes out to be about 1.7 million um I put some minimum raises that we would include in there and that's 2.

to avoid these in the future the business services department and the grant management team are meeting on a regular basis so we can review each of the reimbursements and ensure that we won't have to worry about this next year are there any questions about the change okay well with your approval we will submit to Ade that just takes us contacting them they'll take down our current annual financial report I'll load the signed one that you signed tonight up tomorrow as soon as they take that down no question yeah okay I'll take a motion I moved to approve the 2021-2022 revised annual fund financial report as presented thank you all in favor aye aye motion carries five to zero faculty a youth agreement lot north of ranch January 15 2020 through 23 through August 15 2024 Hayden building Corps yes Hayden building Corp came to us uh they have received a contract for the widening of the roads uh specifically the road Germain from Kenworthy to Meridian add the extension of uh Kenworthy north of Germain so there's going to be a new road that goes north of Germain up to where it will line up with Pecos uh and then it'll go Pecos will go from Kenworthy over to Ironwood they'll also be increasing widening parts of Ironwood for turn Lanes into Germain and into Pecos and they will be adding some utilities both sewer and water and so that contract there looking for a drop yard and since we have that yard uh to the north of that land to the north of ranch that's already fenced off they approached us to see if they could rent that from us as a facility agreement we looked around for what the the cost was for that by looking what other contractors put out and then work with them on agreement and this is the agreement I'm bringing to you the gist of the agreement is during that time they will pay us 1650 bucks a month for the use of the land but then they'll also we reduce the price a little bit because they also were willing to do a donation for the 23-24 and the 24-25 year with our foundation in the amount of 7 500 each year which would be the highest amount that we have and so we felt this was a win-win for us where we could go ahead and build some scholarship dollars for our kids but also at the same time would get Revenue which because it is property we would we would want to rent it out so I would recommend a approval of this agreement with the Hayden building Corp I have a question okay um the income from that the 1650 where does that go uh correct me if I'm wrong but I believe that would go into rooftop into uh donations it would be part of our rooftop fees uh and it has uh it can be the well let me back up the 1650 would be for that and it could be used for any number of different uh uh areas that we wanted to use in the future we have a significant amount of money in that right now because of other donations uh for the buildings uh as as homes are built so it'll just be put into that same bucket of money okay and I I just would like to compliment whoever did the negotiations on getting money into the uh into the foundation I think that's pretty amazing a little bit of a tag team approach but I do want to thank Mr Anderson he he did the initial discussion with Hayden and then I'm looking at the attachment that has the map of the um of the property that's going to be leased I assume it's the one in the yellow outline that's the gray shaded that says 1.5 AC I'm assuming that means Acres yes that's that's so it's not right up to the corner it's a little bit south of the corner right they they went ahead they're going to fence off some area they will put some millings down to knock the dust down because they're under dust control uh if we don't want the millings after the project is over then they'll remove them we wanted to make sure that the entrance was still available because we do have special events like graduation where we need to have some parking uh and then there are if we look at the FFA area there is some access that's needed for the FFA that's why they're fencing it off because we may have some kids that need to get into the FFA area on a weekend to go ahead and take care of the animals so they were very amenable to work with us and they had originally come out with one big lot but worked with us to split it in half what you will see if people are driving is you will start to see initially some some pipe that's being dropped that would be the water and sewer that they'll be storing until they're ready to they're ready to put it in we will meet with them on a regular basis uh We I Wouldn't anticipate any impact to Jermaine and anything with our buses or Transportation probably into the next school year because I believe they're going to be doing some other road work to create an alternative pathway for people to leave the area and so you're probably going to see some work that's that's related to Kenworthy and the new Pecos so that if they have to do anything on Germain well as they widen it then people have access routes out so we will work with them to make sure our buses are not impacted so they're going to I think one of the things you said is extend Kenworthy North to Pecos he's in that state land currently is is there some issue with that no that's that that land has been um that land has been annexed by the town of Queen Creek so if you look at the town of Queen Creek the town of Queen Creek takes everything from Pima so across the street from Iowa Crossing goes all the way up to our boundary which is just short of the um 24 at Meridian and it goes all the way across past the canal in past schnepp Road and then curves back down and stops right about where Ranch is because the land after Ranch becomes BLM land and so the majority of that up to the canal up to snap has been designated by the town of Queen Creek as urban employment which means it's no homes it's all commercial development and so that they are then within that plan for the LG plant they had also put in this road system and so Hayden is the one that's going to start to do the road system that's aligned with the work the LG plant there's been no official announcement on the LGA plant but I'm assuming that that's probably going to start to to pick back up because you wouldn't be putting this road if if you weren't bringing in some other industry thank you any other questions no okay I'll take I'll take I moved to approve the facility agreement for Hayden building Corp to use a lot north of Ranch Elementary from January 15 of 2023 August 15 of 2024 as presented okay all in favor aye aye aye motion carries five to zero okay 8.3 discussion and possible consideration of action to approve the board organization this is like the funnest part ever not so now so um I have to ask this though whoever becomes president next are they going to take over right now or take over at the next meeting they can take over right now or we can move to the next meeting either way it just depends on how the motion is how do you guys figure what are we going to do take over now or take over the next meeting depends on who's the president [Laughter] it may be a moot point there's a train I can hear and and so yeah and so everybody understands the way it works under the law the law requires that this organizational meeting be taken that take place directly after an election so next January we technically don't have to do that we do do that most districts do but legally you only have to do it off of an election year Okay so so the next president will take over at the next meeting okay all right I will uh take let me see here I I I'm gonna take motions to nominate for a board president I would like to nominate Shelly Hargis for boy president I second any other any other motions I would like to close nominations for president [Laughter] can we vote yeah all in favor aye do you have to use some type of acceptance speech or something like that it does not matter if we have the president take over right now or at the next time so we have we have okay um motion so that uh all right motion to nominate for uh position of clerk so I'm just gonna motion to nominate Bob for the clerk second all right all in favor oh no any other motions any other motions okay Let's uh okay all in favor aye aye motion carries four four to zero to one he's going to abstain all right so that's it I think we've taken care of all right okay okay let's go congratulations okay so now we're gonna go to um information and discussion items we have 9.1 discussion information on student achievement the January report from our CIA slash CSI Santan Valley that's right I'm gonna do this bring your briefcases well good evening Madam president members of the board Dr Wyman guests colleagues everyone out there in the Multiverse I am going to discuss with you some of our assessment results from Quarter Two so as you know we are following our um our instructional path for hashtag forward and so in assessment we have done the evidence collection and we have reviewed our data and so now we're going to talk a little bit about what that data looked like and then what our plan is for moving into the third quarter so our third to eighth grade students took the aasa mimic and the mimic as its name suggests it's a sampling of the year's worth of Standards so students will be exposed to that whole Year's worth of Standards to see where they lie every time they take this as a predictive test for what's coming at the end of the school year so this is great for our students because it gives us areas of focus standards that are showing that we need to strengthen some instruction it also works in some ways as a pre-assessment for those standards that have yet to be covered but will be covered before we take aasa the proficiency bands are very unique because proficiency is obviously based on the previous years aasa performance and the previous year's worth of mimic data as it's taken throughout the State of Arizona by the illuminate the districts that participate with illuminate so what we're seeing is we're seeing a lot of growth and Improvement and that's exactly what we want to see as a predictor every time we take the assessment we see a little bit of a jump we have chosen to set our predictive measurement at end of the year guidelines so we didn't change it every time you know so at this point of the Year we'd see one and another we decided just to set it for end of the year so we could get an idea of where we're heading and the growth that we're looking for so our proficiency bands are a little bit different than they were last year because last year we set them more on a traditional grading scale which would be 90 to 100 80 to 89.

that Monday so it's whatever we decide and then the mayor there could take a look at it right so this is the proposed difference [Music] and it becomes uh after in a month from now becomes the Board of Education yeah whatever you'd like to ask a quick question please sure okay thanks um I I don't know if this is a question as much as it is um just a quick comment um I I think I see exactly what you guys are doing I think that this is a much better outline of this on Monday um so I appreciate that thank you um what I'm looking at and where I'm a little concerned is the lack of mental health care support decreases um there's that's something that's come to the table a number of times from different sources in the last year it seems very clear to me that that's going to continue to be a struggle as you know we try to act on the kids back to school and also deal with some of the overcrowding and the conflicts that come out of that over the crowding so I just wanted to make a statement that you know if it's possible for us to you know add to this request I think that we ought to consider doing that to try to build a bolster our mental health supports thank you yeah if I could just for a moment I do just want to highlight that in the high school budget request the three School counseling requests are um you know working on both the long journey Academy as well as supporting the students social emotional needs we are also fortunate um in in Kate I appreciate your comments I couldn't agree with you more as far as the name there so I want to be sure we certainly could use extra Folks at any point in time in that area um but there there has been a specific request um you know particularly for the secondary there's also been conversation about those Middle School level positions being off people Services support staff to support at that level so there has been consideration there we've also been the recipients of the leap Grant this year so that's the um learner engagement and attendance program regarding chronic absenteeism and re-engaging students and families in school we've been fortunate to be able to onboard staff through that um so I think the combination between General budget and our funding to address those areas but I certainly would support engaging in further conversation as it's no secret that that's a neat across [Music] it thank you very much you're welcome any questions just correct me if I'm wrong I asked your budget was 137 million 2.4 was from our Reserve fund uh well now this is one I say two years ago that was the 21-22 year correct okay and 2223 is 141 million that right now there is no Reserve funds in that house no no um I did have a conversation with the finance director this week about the reserve because in 21 2021 we added another 2.8 million to the reserve and he's looking at a little differently than his predecessor but when it went to the city council there's a letter I'll share with everybody they earmarked it for unplanned expenditures it's a little different than one-time expenditure before so I said when I was uh can enrollment be unplanned for it and I didn't say no to that we didn't say no to some other things so I think um you know there's room to talk for sure thank you yeah any questions would you this is really good is it worthwhile inviting the council to our Workshop talk about that at one of your meetings I mean we have a 100 understanding of the budget and what we're asking for if that's what people want to do [Music] I mean if I think what happened we couldn't invite them I mean if it makes much of a difference I don't think it does it hasn't before but I mean if that's what the rest of the board wants for the administration I think it's a good idea I would say engagement I mean I'm okay thank you everybody's just going to make a difference I mean I'm okay with that I think Kevin's okay next next there is a um as of now that he is involved so helping you participation if you keep your remote okay so chair and chairs next year of the finances up to um but the closer we come through I think we would be better off in person so I would like to change the experience [Music] so yeah you're talking about the work the workshop is in person correct yes Workshop right now we scheduled to be home it's scheduled Zoo correct some schedule yeah I think if we do the workshops in person and maybe the media so councilman I'm I'm a fan of in person yeah obviously me me personally but I'm showing Finance community on the 17th thank you the Workshop is Wednesday [Music] like I said I'm a fan of in person because that's but it's not it's up to the chair in the fight on the 17th I would like to be here it seems we have a lot more questions for John a new person we do that yeah I'm sorry I'm in the building anyway so that's a wonderful thing English my workshop I'm not I'm I'm taking what I Rachel um I only brought about anybody who did that city council um um in my opinion I think we should keep policy committee Zoom oh yeah and do the workshop in person that's what the rest of the members want um policy is 18 yeah thanks Zoom yeah all right let's act like okay let's backtrack a couple things on the table I'm having a bad night already so it's money let's not keep going so yes to inviting the city council to the workshop correct Thursday Thursday okay Workshop in person in person finance committee on the 17th yes okay we will make each other we got it if you want all right I like dealing I like dealing with giant person at all right could I just say uh make the comment ever since I generally bored and we started workshops for the budget we've always remember what always going to the common Council now whether they show up or not it used to be one two or three but communication always we always and the superintendent secretary can go back and find out that we have so obviously it's a big deal with this stuff [Music] yep [Music] so as a finance committee on the 17th I think what I'll say is good is it different than what we saw tonight because it and we're going to get down to the nitty-gritty on the workshop that's what though well I thought um like we did earlier tonight where the sites and Facilities look at some of their buildings and grounds things we were thinking maybe the finance committee could hold its own on one of the finance things such as utilities really transportations some chunks Workshop [Music] Mr Russo are you asking about the agenda from the 17th is that what I'm here I'm sorry sorry are you inquiring about the agenda for the 17th yes so I I think John's intention is to have a regular Finance meeting on Tuesday will you review your monthly your monthlies certainly another item would be to review provide a deeper dive into some of the line items that you saw here tonight under energy because those things come out of John's office just to provide the committee an opportunity to dig a little bit deeper specifically into the areas that John area and then and then I believe that's it unless the committee had something different we were not planning to review this again in committee because on Thursday night of course we will be reviewing the same presentation no numbers will be changed the same presentation uh but with an opportunity for a deeper dive and then the second agenda item is the line by line book that you see tonight uh the idea was you have to book this evening give you some time going into next Thursday to develop any questions you might have um in John will be prepared to go live by life thank you so if you could ask Karen to reach out to the council please well yeah because we can get that book okay yes absolutely thank you okay [Music] thank you John appreciate it okay temperatures we have two as part of the superintendent update we have two areas we want to focus on retention and Recruitment and then also teacher kind of recognition if you will Kim Thompson um it was a PowerPoint that's in front of you we'll speak to the Recruitment and Retention piece so we'll start there kind of an update on our teacher recognition work that we've been doing great thank you yes all right so um every year right around this time is when I come to you to bring you kind of a recap of where we've been in our season of hiring in this last year and so I um I did put this PowerPoint presentation in the packet so you can have a chance to read in Greater detail at your leisure but I just wanted to focus on some of the hybrids today just to give you an idea of where we are and how that fits in our strategic goal of diversifying hiring across the district so here we go and I'm technologically whether it's unemployment sorry if not I pregnant all right um so just to note kind of of where the larger landscape is out there in the world um everybody's reading at the same things we're all reading the same um popular articles about how there are labor shortages Nationwide and there's a couple of good articles I link to it in there and you can see in the materials you'd be critical and read it I just wrote another one today actually what we're seeing is depressed levels of available hiring pools across the country across automatic arrays of jobs in our district we're seeing it particularly around teachers in shortage areas para Educators for sure nurses and substitutes and one of the notes that I just put in here that I thought was trying to use it what we're seeing is since the pandemic that teachers now are considering leaving the teaching profession after five years at a rate that is now up to 30 percent so the most frequent reasons for that we're seeing are stress changes that they're seeing in the classroom and to some extent wages next time um Nationwide when we look at demographics of teachers and this is old data but believe it or not most currently available from some of our national sources the numbers are not all that different over time but you can see that predominantly the workforce among certified staff is white not Hispanic and then you can see the next number there 6.7 black or African American and 9.3 percent of Hispanic um so I don't know the performance is really focusing on it a little bit but there you can see okay next slide is um General observations are um and this is something that you've heard me say for the last couple of years is that while we're seeing an itching up of the pool of teachers of color that we are seeing dramatic increases and changes in the demographics of students um so that the changes in the teacher pool are not really keeping track of the changes in the student rule so here you see 47 students are white 27 Hispanic 15 black five percent Asian and these numbers are coming out of recent peer research and again I link the study that we want to take a look at it so what we're seeing Nationwide is a trend where while numbers of teachers of color are increasing slowly that the student population is changing more dramatically next slide please so um let's just take a brief walk through the state of Connecticut data I will say the state has put on edsite much better data so it's a lot easier to do this work now but what you can see from this chart is from 2017 to 18 through last year 2122 that there's been fairly static growth um if you look at black African-American teachers 3.7 3.84 4.1 4.3 study book smog growth same among Hispanic teachers steady above small growth and the numbers in terms of percentage of that Workforce are still really under five percent per group in some cases even smaller than that slope and steady increase but not the kind of numbers that are tracking the changes in student demographics next slide please so how do we step up in this and and I really need to use the term post pandemic we've seen a lot of changes in how you're in pre-pandemic and post-pandemic um so how do we stack up so um you'll remember those of you have seen this presentation before I like to break this out by both the hiring cohort meaning the number of teachers we hired this year and then we'll look we'll zoom out and look at how they fed into the larger pool now remember you have 1100 teachers here so it's going to take a long time to change any of the demographics of your largest teacher group it's going to come in very small increments hear what I find interesting about this this chart is different this year because the number of teachers coming from New York is up to about 15 that's high for us we drew a lot of teachers across the border quite a few from New York City area that's helping our demographics obviously it's where we're bringing in a more diverse Workforce that is new for us the other number I like here is 25 23 Danbury residents the reason why I say I like that is of course we like to have people living in the district that are teaching here but also what it's saying to me is there are certain things about working in a priority School District that are an advantage there is a discounted student loan rate for example for people who are teaching in a priority School District there is provincial mortgage rates that are offered to teachers in this District so what that says to me is that we may be attracting some folks who live and work in Danbury because of some of these other perks that come from the primary school district next slide the one thing that we saw this year is we saw fewer teachers coming to us with their master's degree already in place um that's a drop of about six or seven percent over last year um I don't know that there's a super amount to take from that just kind of a point of interest that teachers are coming more frequently with the bachelor's and work towards the Masters when they get here slide please uh gender this is again no surprise and I'm hard to budge what we're seeing is a heavily female cohort a heavily female applicant group and um particularly in the areas of special education and Elementary education so here you see Elementary applicants and special applicants um this data just so you know if we pull this from Apple track which is where we take all of our applications from they do a really interesting they have lots of different reports and things you can run but it's really interesting because we can look at entire pools we can look at buildings so we can really drill down and see who we're seeing in terms of applicants and that who we're seeing in terms of higher hired applicants so again happily female applicant pool Okay so what we saw this year is not horribly different from what we've seen in years past you were at about just shy of 25 of your new teachers hired or teachers of color that's a great number for you um in the big scheme of things it's fairly steady for where we've been um it is um oh not quite two to one but more Hispanic Latino teachers than black African American teachers and again a heavily outnumbering Asian teachers but the teacher of caller number is is I think for us it's a keeping with the trend the upward Trend we've seen over the last few years um in here I kind of charted it out for you so this purple line shows where we've been since 2014 um since we really started tracking these numbers and you've seen kind of a steady increase overall um and again um some kind of ups and downs our scale is by five percent here at a time so um this looks like a dramatic drop it is you know a few percentage points but we're seeing generally things going in in the correct direction the interaction we'd like to go in in keeping with our goals okay so remember a minute ago we looked at the Connecticut Trends and we saw nobody really inching above five percent um in any category and this is your Danbury School District Trends over again this last five years excluding again the current cohort because the last year that the state has our numbers here 21-22 but again you'll see kind of a steady increase 3.9 percent four percent four percent uh for black teachers um you're seeing six and a half percent six and a half percent going the size of 8.2 um last year 9.2 so you're seeing that steady increase in numbers that are outstripping actually the State numbers um so again trajectory in the correct direction um and in generally the same proportions we've seen in the last five years or so okay so what I did for you in this Grid or this graph is I try to depict for you um in charts because I'm a visual learner I like to see visions and graphs and pie charts but what you can see is this year over last year in terms of your existing teachers and again same story you can see this blue sliver right here is fitting features 10 last year was at nine percent um black teachers again this year at five percent last year at four percent we're seeing this increase again remembering that removing a pool of 1100 teachers so when we had 25 teachers of color we're seeing very incremental changes to our overall demographic of teachers and um so this is kind of the big comparison slide so the two bars here the blue bar and the other are green bar our state of Connecticut numbers and the red bar and purple bar are Danbury numbers so you can see again um certainly here in this first depiction we are well almost doubling the numbers in terms of percentage from the state and we're hovering about study with the state here in black African American and we're outstripping pretty well in the in the category of Asian teachers um what I like about this slide is it's kind of it's certainly showing our progression in the two years over time but it's also showing in comparison to the district it really resonates on something that we talked about earlier about what are we doing at the state to increase funding for some of our great groups that really need additional funding like ESL what you're seeing here is you're seeing us drawing in a lot of Hispanic teachers those are many of them are native Spanish and Portuguese speakers coming into you bilingual teaching roles ESL tesol teaching roles and that's why we're seeing I think a bump up in terms of the hiring in an outsized percentage to some of our other groups uh one more way to look at this um so if you agree with this theory that it would be um a perfect world to have our teachers in the same demographic relationship as we have our students so if we have 50 Hispanic students it would be nice to have 50 of our teachers needs better if if we if that's our sort of holy Grails that's what we're trying to get to or that's what we're always working towards you can see we're inching very slowly in that direction um this pie chart on the left is the percentage of students of color that we have on October one of I should say 2022.

second second by Rachel questions all those in favor interceptions seeing none motion cares remove presentation that sounds like fun will that be uh [Music] shut up [Music] thanks yeah I'll just check it out okay um so thank you very much um before uh I go through the presentation um what what do you have in front of you uh from Monday night we talked about uh having more detail to understand what we're presenting and you have a blue spirally bound uh document it's called the line item budget but it's inside that are really there are three different sorts um the first one is a uh is what you see every month one of the pages on your monthly summer it just takes the make what we call the major objects salaries benefits so on the second sort combines the line items from different locations you also see that every month that's in the same format as you can see for example all the textbooks for all the principles and things like that that's the second one so those two you're familiar with but the third one you haven't seen before and that's what we call a bi-location by line that's as granular as we get that's in some cases what each individual principle put into their budgets when they built them last month line by line so that's uh everything and what I what I'd like to recommend is that at one of our workshops coming up so we're our next one where we have the finance committee next week but then we have a budget workshop for all of us on the 19th and what I recommend is we put a time aside called the line item review of the budget and what I'd like to do is walk you through them because there's a couple new things in there meaning new ways of showing things we haven't done before I like to explain those to you and then uh with any questions you have and please time to look through it maybe there's some particular lines you'd like to know about and we could do it all in a special part of the project it's your you know your budget you can do it in every way you want that would be my uh okay so and then uh before we start um I was speaking with the school administrators about what I do and I described it this way because I I think we we are in a unique situation compared to other schools or neighbors and so on and the reason I think we're unique is because while the pandemic is the pandemic money running out and it's going to run out for us it's come in a time when our enrollment is growing and it it's hard to find another place that has those two things going on everyone's losing their money but not with uh not seeing enrollment grow and and of course our student needs are different we went through a lot of that last year if you remember I won't go through that now but when we try to compare ourselves to what we think are similar communities we're really not so um and then the other thing uh the point I want to make and hopefully you'll see it here is it um no surprise our high school is overcrowded it's it's over it's not going to be overcrowded it's crowded right now and we have some uh Appropriations we're proposing that will deal with that in the budget as well and at the same time though um we need to be realistic you know there's only salt you can't expect everything so what we've what we're recommending to you is something like we did last year in June if you remember when we had to deal with the reduction from the city council compared to what we asked for we did a couple things there were some ways we could reduce our budget you know we had some salary savings we were expecting I think we called breakage where we said you know we know some people are going to retire we'll uh you know we'll hire it less salaries so we've built that into the project we also thought we could reduce a couple sections but the main part of what we did is we looked at the Esso grains those are the covet grants uh to put some of the expected expenditures into those grants because it was running there the end menu so we're gonna suggest another uh approach not those exactly those same things but as a way to keep the budget increase down so I'll show you those in a second so why don't um want to you want to click to the next one so that's the first page I I was smiling when the girl was talking about the pictures I think that they'd be much better than these but maybe we'll use her to take a photo um and uh you know we always were Guided by our vision and our mission and um it's very appropriate to restate that in a budget document because that guides all around the next one okay um about our strategic plan really does I should say filter down into the budget or budget filters up into it it these are animal coincidence but they they really do outline the things we do the things that you're about to see uh whether it's a talent acquisition or staff development of course teaching and learning both the things that are in the strategies that you look at show up not only in the in the summer year but in the line I'd we can talk about some adults but to you know to meet those goals you know strategic plan we need the plans to go away this just connects and of course the portrait of The Graduate underlines instructions okay so um I think this is important this important page it's important because of the number right here is 12 000.

yes well the 15 was our estimate after the students the house right now we only have a 10 and students that are coming okay you feel better with three um I agree and it would be I guess depending on the number of students we would then know which bus should take one of the smaller houses that doesn't need a CDL driver or if they use a big one seduction pattern um so my only concern that I'm sure you'll be taken care of is that the bus drivers have enough rest to be able to safely driving you there and back that's my biggest concerned I went back home safe right yes and so I'm sure that that will be taken care of but it scares me to death when you guys run up there and run back yeah the bus driver was being too fatigued right that's Trevor will have um his own room so he can fully get all the rest um and again the power schedule according to do that yeah so out of curiosity is our flash driver not included in going to the park okay okay that was my other thing okay um we certainly want you guys have a single trip with yourself one we wanted to be safe right we will chaperoned it and give you their new vaccine and we've already had parental control yeah coming once a week because the two chaperones will be you know for 15 students if the students grow are chaperone too and I think it's one adult person children I think that's the letter of the law when it comes to that I think I know that's the way it is the child care yeah one to six is for elementary but then usually when you get up to high school it's usually ten to one okay we see any more expressions okay so uh Mr Guthrie hi Mr Hopkins aye Mr Rodriguez foreign foreign Mr President members of the board the board is expected to adopt a budget meeting calendar at the beginning of each fiscal year additional board meetings may be scheduled with a 24-hour notice scheduled meeting dates may be changed within a 24-hour notice below are the proposed study and regular session meetings for 20 23 the administration is recommending the above these and scheduled board meeting dates for 2023.

about 2.4 million dollars between what we have what we would carry over and what we anticipate we would get for next year that is sustainable so that's not something that I'm concerned about um okay this is on top of the eight teachers that we currently have at Esser we've already accounted for them that's outside of these positions yes so we have one more year investors we have one more year of sr3 we have to have sr2 spent but sr3 which was the largest of the three pots we can continue through September of 24. I've kind of directed staff that we want to be done by June of 24 so that we kind of clean things up and have it done by itself yeah yeah so what are we going to do with 17 teachers if you flip the page kind of tells you a little bit about what I'd like to propose um at our elementary schools what I'd like to propose is a PE teaching school no okay we have had PE teachers but it's been many many years uh prior to the recession that was one of the cuts that we made at the recession okay one of the things that we did as a result of the recession was we cut Preps at the middle school and high school our Middle School and High School teachers teach six classes which is 20 more than what is the industry standard these 12 teachers fight it at Heritage and seven at the high school would be bring back those preps for those teachers now um and this is something that we we discussed uh we've been discussing for a while are we going to be able to find 12 teachers that's that's another question uh we want to throw out there to existing staff if you want to teach this experience and that's your choice to do that you're not going to force it to do that but if you choose to teach sixth grade we'll give you a 20 bump on your contract 20 more work but the the key to that is it has to be in multiples of five correct one one teacher is five periods so you gotta fill up those five periods in order for that to be most effective so it could be a combination it could for the high school I'm just throwing things out it could be 12 uh or it would be 15 sections and for teachers so 15 uh 15 overloads and four teachers would make up your seven teachers or it could be five overloads and six teachers I don't care what that this is really left at this site for the sites to determine and because if they don't get the overloads they're gonna have to find the teacher sense for kind of what what it is also and they have the their most they have the most intimate knowledge of what their school needs and how to you know although we never want to be experts in schedules we become experts and schedules and how to schedule that as well okay so that uh would bring back now the PE teachers would also bring back a prep at the elementary school and they also have library and computers so those are already in place so those that's 12 plus a 2pt PE teachers is 14.

now we're just doing it based on what all of the student population looks like in Arizona as they made their way towards aasa unfortunately when we do that we do understand that every year it's a different group of students who are taking the test and so the predictive the predictability of those numbers will change every year so that is for our third to eighth grade so that's our mimic we also have our Quarter Two High School benchmarks and these are a little bit different because we've worked with the high school on a quarter by quarter Benchmark so many of the standards Loop so students are exposed to the same standards we're just upping the rigor and the application process so what we're looking at here is percent passing so we're looking at it more as a grade scale than a proficiency band so when we do that we see that there is work to be done in application and rigor so when we started these benchmarks we see that students have access to those foundational level skills and they have access to the learning what we're seeing is how we translate that into application and rigor so we're looking at three areas of focus essentially after we look at this data so our first area is curriculum and instruction so we want to make sure that all of our teachers have access to the aligned materials and resources so once we know I'm sorry go ahead could I just slow you down for a second absolutely back up to the previous Slide the three eight yeah three to eight so um if if I'm understanding you correctly if I look at third grade ELA quarter 113 Ela Quarter Two twenty percent so we're looking for quarter three and quarter four for continued Improvement yes what percentage would we like to see at the end of quarter four we would like to see above 50 percent Above So above 50 is where the state had set the aasa Benchmark for last school year again like we say it's a changing number right because we're using previous year data but we'd like to be above 50 so if we look at sixth grade for ELA they're at 54 already so they're doing pretty well look at it from that point of view yes absolutely if we look now at the math numbers yes those math numbers don't look so hot yes so that tells us we've got some work to do yes absolutely and that's kind of what we're talking about when we look at a math adoption and making sure that we have the appropriate curricular materials aligned to what we're teaching in the classrooms and it also goes to those instructional strategies are we utilizing the appropriate instructional strategies to get students to use the information and and to be able to apply it to those tasks instead of just being able to you know tell us wrote what's happening instead be able to apply it to something else and then it also looks at how we work with teacher plcs and how we get them to work together identify areas of strengths in one classroom compared to appear across the hall who may have shrinks in another area and they're able to compare that data and that's something that we're working through and also we're working on this through our professional learning and I know that Dorsey is going to come up and speak a little bit about where that path is going but that's what we started with our January 4th DL is giving teachers this information and the the um and the education around how to bring it into the classroom to do that application and rigorous tasks and then if you look at the next slide which we were on the uh High School benchmarks so if I understand you're right this is a little bit different in terms of how to interpret it so could you go over how to interpret these numbers absolutely so what we're looking at here is percent passing so high school standards tend to Loop so we see the same standards pop up each quarter it's how we apply a task to that standard so in the first quarter for example if we look at 10th grade ELA we see that the students had that skill to use that standard on foundational or beginning level tasks what we need to see Improvement is is taking that same standard and now applying it to a more rigorous text or an application that asks you to cite references to compare and contrast to infer those are the things that we're working towards and so that's what's coming up next so instead of just maybe feedback what you've had or do a simple calculation and you're looking for something more complex right and multi-step that's another that's another area that we're focusing on for our teachers is that idea of translating one skill then that skill moves to a Next Level because many of the questions that we see in standardized tests aren't just asking for an answer they're asking for throughout the process explain where you were in that process are we still looking for the 50 at the end the high school benchmarks are actually on a on a grade scale so this is on the graded scale so we'd like to see 60 and above for our high school students yeah but unfortunately we don't have a mimic that's aligned to act and that's the state test so we don't have that same so we're looking at providing information on standards and being able to use those standards thank you any other questions all right well then I'm going to pass this over to Dorsey okay um as Denise said I'm going to talk about some of the things that we do in response to the data in helping our teachers get the skills knowledge and strategies they need to respond to students to make sure that we are supplying everything that we can for our student population so one of the missions of our professional development crew is to support that responsiveness and help plan for instructional Improvement in the classroom and so today basically what I want to do is not just describe that but also give a bit of an overview and a bit of a debrief of what we did for our January peel day and give you a sneak peek on how we have grown in the district and what we're doing in professional learning and how we're taking that data analyzing that data and then responding to it with our adjustments and what we're doing with our forward movement so um here is our professional learning day timeline we started off with a little bit of breakfast and then we went into the sea backpack for celebrations and we started with a message from Dr Wyman and we celebrated our pioneers and um their application and fluency of forward and that transparency of learning peace and then we also kind of gave our um our participants a little sneak peek that their classes were going to look and feel a little bit different for that session then people broke out into their learning sessions and then we had lunch as was mentioned earlier and that was awesome I'd like to thank core for our as our sponsor and then also our cooks that are in the room we had some amazing cooks and I'm really disappointed that no one was wearing hats also a really big thank you to miss Acosta for helping us set up all of those things and making sure that we had the food and all of the tools to make that happen after that we launched into learning sessions again and then we closed the day with our student services department presenting our mtss framework and and that is also what we do to make sure that we're responding to all students for all of their needs in the classroom so our next piece kind of Dives a little bit deeper into what we were thinking about when we were planning so as you know student ownership is key to providing students that voice and choice and it really is the pathway to student engagement and then empowerment so as we develop our classes we don't just look at the standards and our assessment results but we actually take the the assessment and the items and we break those down to see where we are with student performance so initially when we start looking at some of that data we can notice that the data will say like a student an item is on our assessment could be a dok-1 which is really a knowledge level feature but then we're starting to look at some of those DK2 and dok3 pieces those are the higher thinking levels that are asked and demanded of students so when we are putting together a professional learning day we're really looking at where is our student performance in any of those areas when we're looking at that blooms in that thinking demand so what did we do we actually focused ourselves on what are we doing for our students we want to prepare them for workplaces we want to make sure that our 21st century Learners have the soft skills the thinking the habits and the learning that they need to be successful in the workplace so one of the things that we also did was make sure that our teachers had that connection in their sessions because we want to imp we want to employ or implement or embed all of that learning within our teachers learning so that they can mimic and mirror that into the classroom so we have a roadmap what I've done is taken our instructional model pieces and kind of broke them out into the boxes that we have here so for a while we've been focusing on nurturing cultures and that really is developing that safe place in the classroom where students have voice they start having that pathway of choice and then we started to launch in taking that nurturing culture and transitioning and embedding that into our purpose of our learning well our purposeful learning piece is all about rigor rigor is that higher level thinking taking some of those knowledge pieces and escalating them into analyzing and evaluating and our most difficult standards really ask students to do those pieces when you put those goal one and goal 2 features together it asks our teachers to foundational take that standard and deconstruct it identify the floor of that standard and the ceiling of this standard as far as thinking is concerned and then our classes really help our teachers design a scaffolded approach to all of that learning and what the learning in the classroom would be designed for so it's taking that scaffolded approach that's really important for students because that in standard that end goal doesn't change but where students start is different for every student what they bring into the classroom and where but where they need to go is the same where they start is different so those are the first places that we begin so what did we do we took our sessions and we divided them into two types our teachers have been asking for an opportunity to work and have some guidance with that so we had some Workshop sessions and then we also had some class sessions each one of our sessions were collaborative they continued to support our pedagogy our instructional application and understand where students are and in their behavior there was a group of people that really put this PD day together and I want to recognize and show that we worked in collaboration with bringing that so we had our departments on the CIA or the CSI departments were um were working together we had our coordinators our director and our coaches putting teaching and providing support we also had our student services department the director coordinator and Specialists working providing classes and instruction as well and then we also partnered with our technology group and our integrated technology Specialists worked with our new teachers that started the day of PD and offered sessions on how to use Synergy in Google and some of the other features that we have in the district so we had 282 participants we had 21 classes that stretched over 47 sessions we tried to differentiate for our teachers just like we asked them to differentiate for our students okay um just as before I just kind of wanted to keep that structure in place with looking at how we divide or really categorize the learning so we have some programs and tools you can see the classes that are listed there in support of our teachers and and using those tools to meet students needs we also have a backstage craft which I described before and I want to kind of reiterate that is really growing our teacher skills knowledge and toolbox so that they can move that into the classroom so those are the sessions that we had there some of those are directly related to our forward goals and we have those classes listed there and then we also want to make sure that we are attending to our instructional and learning environment that is student-centered we had a session led by Dr fountain for our instructional leadership group and then um we have some of the other pieces there listed from our Student Services Group we asked our teachers what did you like most out of the sessions that you had and so out of almost a thousand lines of feedback that we had from our teachers we just selected some of these that are coming out so I have one from the workshop model that you can see there our teachers appreciated being able to work through the standards on their own and at their own pace and receive help when needed because they had a guide in there uh identifying the differences between the different question types to increase thinking levels in the classroom for students is one of the people one of the feedback pieces that we had and then our last piece which I find extremely meaningful was learning how to provide meaningful intervention and what to do with the data so we have next steps we can't just learn and then not do anything with it implementation and then supporting that implementation is key and it's most important to success of our teachers and students so we have him we'll be supporting plc's and then we'll also be collecting and analyzing the data from our teachers not just from the feedback but from the implementation process through qualitative discussions as well and then designing the next session in March March 20th so with that we have future topics with the CIA that I'd like to go over but before I do do any of you have any questions okay yes I have a question yes so just uh would data suggest that there is there might be a misalignment between the current curriculum and the current test being given the curriculum in the tests so current data suggests that our students are working on elevating those higher thinking level pieces the multi-step processes and the the items and the texts that are of higher rigor so we do have curriculum and instructional materials that support that what we need to do is offer opportunity for our students to experience what those are get guidance and and um practice within those and then also one of our classes was about productive struggle allowing that opportunity for students to struggle and learn through inquiry okay thank you thank you any other questions well if I know how to ask my so as a teacher I find that when the district comes in to bring new and I'm familiar with with hashtag forward yes um I find that the district ends up putting such a load on the teachers that it's hard to have the energy or the ability to enforce the rigor and maybe enforce is the right word what is the district doing to maybe lighten the load so they can focus a little more on the student if that even makes sense so let me see if I can clarify what you're thinking I just know the rigor or the the load that teachers feel whenever the district comes with a program because that's usually what happens the district has a program and it ends up putting more load on a teacher right and so I think what's really important for us and what we've really tried to do is make sure we're not going to do an exception the reason we're moving forward with hashtag Ford is so that we have a consistent program across the board for all teachers and we're not uh jumping from from Panacea to Panacea to Panacea and so I do like that the gym is right it's been a few years now yes and then it's been since 16 17 around 20 when we turned it over to the whole staff and so I think that becomes the biggest key is is you have to take a diff a direction what I use the analogy all the time uh you know we're a team and this is the offense we run if you want to if you want to run the offense we're running then you come work for us if you want a different offense then go work for somebody else and so I think that becomes critical because it is very easy for districts to keep finding the next Silver Bullet that's not out there we hope based on that we will get people that are more cons become more ingrained into what we're doing and so therefore it becomes uh part of what they're used to doing and therefore there is less taken off their plate by the fact that we are not introducing new things all the time the exception of that is it's a little bit to Mr Ray's question is when we bring in new curriculum and update new curriculum then we do obviously have to to have to bring in the new curriculum and make sure the staff understands that so so it's it's charting a Direction staying in that direction a lot of times with uh new superintendents I use myself I come in and we just Chuck everything we did before we're going to start on the next PATH the way I want it to go um and we're trying not to do that we've said there's a commitment to hashtag Ford and we want to move move and use that framework for everything we do and that's what that's what we're working on I don't know not looking for it I'm not I'm not thinking detailed plan but I think it's something to be thoughtful about because the teachers receive the shovels to do the work where as The Visionaries were like we have this great idea and I know that your hearts are into it just I don't just in the back your mind think are we helping the teachers still have the energy to help the students that we care so deeply about to have the energy to do that and I just wonder if that's a respect level that teachers need to have for that with districts have this for the teachers I wonder if it's something that helps teachers want to stay with with all the stuff about teachers leaving education is this something that we can do are we looking at are we overloading our teachers unnecessarily or have we found ways that we can light load and still accomplish the goals that we have are you referring directly to forward and the items with forward just all teacher work it's all of it it's all of it and I I think you're asking a great question in um this Tucker got to be there for our instructional leadership conversation but this was a piece that we were talking about with our building level leaders um and that's always one of the topics of conversation like what are we taking away anytime we put something new in place and um I always call it the Sesame Street mentality you know what is this brought to you by the letter a and the number four and that's it like that's what we're doing you know and so that consistency piece is certainly an element of it um and then the scaffolded support for that um I think the hard part that we're always faced with in education um and I'm an educator married to an educator who's child of Educators so like I've lived and breathed this my whole life um you know sometimes we're at the crossroads of um which educators are we holding on to and and where is that commitment and dedication level um and I think what we're finding is the folks who really do have the foresight to do what's best for kids um are grabbing on to these pieces and really developing and we're trying to scaffold that I would love to answer a couple of previous questions as well I'll be direct to my answer to Mr Ray's question and that is uh yes I I think that curriculum is one of the components that we're looking at you can see it in the math data it's pretty clear there we have some updates to do in that math is an area where the standards have changed significantly over recent years in terms of the depth and complexity of what we're asking students to be able to do and it's one of the beautiful pieces in the modern teacher framework which is to have that modern curriculum we have to make sure that our curriculum is up to date with the what the standards are asking students to do so the teachers can do that the other piece of that equation and Mr beaches mentioned that now is the teacher piece and what are we doing to help our teachers develop the skills to teach that it's one of the hard pieces about education that what we're asking teachers to do today is not what we were asking them to do 10 years ago so teachers who are not new to our system who have been with us for a number of years are being asked to continually learn and grow and that's why the pl the pdps is such an important component and why we have to keep a narrow focus on helping them develop those skills so that it's not just an Ask without the support we spend a lot of time thinking about how we're supporting them and their learning in growth so your point is very valid in always thinking about you know making sure we're not asking for too much we have that conversation amongst leadership on a regular basis so but I'd also point out the one thing that we've done and this you may Mr Ray and and Mr Beech may have different experiences I'll just use my experiences the one thing that is different in this District in order to help combat some of the discussion about uh what what teachers learn is that there are six identified days of PD above and beyond so the three days that we put in before the school year starts is using Esther's dollars and it's designed to make sure that we can help them grow as teachers with this uh and that's is it's it may or may not go beyond essers uh depends on what the funding is at the state whether we choose to to continue to pay for that but then the a lot of places would come back after the two-week break and they would just start school right away we give the kid the kids one more extra day three times a year so that our teachers can get continued professional development so I do think that's another way that the district's looking to say okay how do we make sure that teachers are feeling comfortable with what they're teaching and we're going to dedicate six days throughout the year that are full days to allow for that some they may do work on their own others I mean we buried it as Dorsey was saying but that's something that's a little bit unique at least in my experience with other districts I've been in there was not the three days the three extra days before school nor is there time built into the school year some places or maybe but but in the five or six districts I've been in That's Unique to hear that's another way to try to make sure that we're giving them the training that they need questions I'm just kidding I'm just kidding bring them on well I'd like I just want to say one thing is that I know that we've been sitting I've I've been here for 14 years and we've been looking at data and it's it's not where we want to be so at one point or another I know as a board we look to you guys to figure out what you're going to do about it so I know that you guys are diving in and trying to figure this out and I think that it has been coming up so I think what you guys are doing is working so we just need to get it back up to get it to the next level thank you doing our best we're doing our best we're also trying to make sure that we are preparing our students for an ever-changing unpredictable world that they're going to be in and that starts with some of those soft skills and also analyzing those standards and hitting that rigor I also have been into your when you go to the new teacher and stuff like those things um I've sat through those and they're they're pretty intense so I mean I think that you you do give some great information I think that you do also give some uh support and with our uh curriculum with our what are their coaches yeah yeah our coaches and induction yeah okay thank you I appreciate that thank you so upcoming events uh from hosted by the CIA uh on for the next board meeting we'll give you some information around our spelling bee it will be at the CPAC on January 24th um we will get some more information on major Clarity um updates on the usage of the major Clarity platform we'll be looking at our K-12 screener data provided by fast Bridge um and brought to you by probably miss Dunwoody yes and then also we'll be giving a little bit of an update on the math adoption oh wonderful thank you okay so we have a 9.2 discussion consideration and approval the changes to the policy recommendations from the asba policy advisor this is our first read so is there anything Dr Wyman that you would like us to that you'd like to point out so that we uh make sure we pay closer attention to no this is just an update based on U.S Department of Education guidance and so therefore it's something we have to do and so unless somebody has a real concern it's just based on foster care and it's just updating the policy so I don't think there's anything major in there you will see after you after this some regulations and Exhibits that will be shared that are also part of this I pulled it out because it was just one policy but there is some additional stuff aligned that they're tied to this that you will see after you guys approve it in February any questions on that one not yet okay all right so I'm going to um go ahead and motion to go into executive session yeah if we could just as we motion to go in I know that uh Miss Cook needs to be have some signatures and stuff so so we may just do a little delay and we'll go into the back room because of the nature of the executive session but there may be a little bit of stuff so because I'm going to excuse everybody because those two people but yeah I'll excuse everybody else and so I know Miss Cook has some signatures so let's get the signatures before we go into executive session but you can call for it now okay but then we'll sign I'll call a motion for executive session a second um all in favor aye all right motion carries five to zero make sure you sign before you go in thank you yeah I know it would have been nothing I would have had to do it because foreign
