giving away my entire update for tomorrow to you however we're also excited to announce that Shadow Ridge High School's architecture program once again won the National Championship with architecture the great things that they do for all of our high school kids we are winding down the Winter High School athletic season and playoffs have begun Valley Vista High School girls basketball team started their Championship defense on Tuesday night by winning their first round game in a brand new format this year an open division format between all conferences 4A through 6A they won their first round and they play again tonight and we have several of our athletic teams in competition tonight in the first round of the playoffs so we're proud of them and then the last thing that I have to share with you this evening which we're very excited about we have partnered with an organization that provides veterans of World War II to come into our schools and share experiences that they had throughout their life and experiences that they had in the military and so these um World War II veterans are vetted through this organization and all the information that they provided to our students is known ahead of time and we are starting the process of having them come in and speak to some of our schools and so we're very excited about this when I began teaching I had the opportunity in a school that I was in to hear one of the uh surviving members from the Holocaust speak and it was powerful and profound and uh eye-opening and I remember at the time there was a push to have as many Holocaust Survivors speak as possible because they were starting to get older and we had the same now with our World War II veterans and so we're so excited about this opportunity to have them and um and it's through just a partnership that uh that we found a gentleman that I met a couple of years ago who's a big developer in town and he called me and said hey Jim I think I've got something right up your alley and he put us in touch with his organization and so we are thrilled to death and excited for that to happen and I'll share more information as we kick that off for the board as well so and that is my update for this evening thank you Dr Dean we will move to governing board update I finished the the last of the a school rating celebrations and we ended up at freedom and Shadow Ridge High School so again congratulations to all the schools that got that a rating I participated in the friends of the library bookmark contest and there were lots of Dysart schools entered in that contest I'm anxious to see who won um I also attended a Showcase of a collective exhibit of K-12 student artists representing Dysart and the following students were recognized for their outstanding Works uh K-12 it's Casey Ponte from Riverview three through five a Tessa I'm gonna mess this up civil sybils at Sunset Hills sixth through 8th grade Caden Summers from West Point and 9-12 a Malia denim from Willow Canyon High School so the Arts are definitely alive in the district um thank you to all the school counselors for everything you do to help our students succeed and I know that next month or at our next meeting there's going to be a presentation about ctes but I just want to commend Mr grieshaber and his crew for all the programs that they provide to our students and it's just one more reason to choose Dysart next we will move on to consent agenda items I will entertain a motion on who we approved the consent of agenda items as presented second motion made by Joe Grant seconded by Don Densmore motion carries next we will move on to item G1 superintendent mid-year report of progress Dr Dean thank you madam president members of the governing board members of cabinet in our community this evening I am absolutely proud to present the work that our administrative team our school district our employees continue to Revel in and we've made great progress throughout the course of this year I know it's a mid-year report we're a little bit further than mid-year at this point in time and quickly headed towards State assessment actually we're quickly headed towards Spring break but then shortly thereafter the state assessment and before we know it it'll be graduation as a matter of fact yesterday I had the opportunity to chat for a few minutes with Shadow Ridge High School student council and I said or how many of you are seniors and you know 10 or 12 of them raise their hand and I said how many of you are ready for graduation and a girl looked at me and she said it's really coming I said it is it's really going to be here and so before we know it will be there but tonight we're going to talk about um where we are from a little bit more of a mid-year report piece as it relates to the goals that we've established um at this point in time so just a reminder that our goals are based upon the four District goals and the first of which is academics and so the first goal is to increase academic achievement throughout the district and we've been working through that with increased accountability additionally one approach that uh that we've taken that's a little different is that my goals are formally provided to the board in conjunction with the assistant superintendents that are responsible for that as well and so that ties our work together very closely and that's a positive for us because that keeps us on track and focused forward in One Direction and we don't want to we want to make sure that we don't get scattered that we continue everything in One Direction and so our first goal was at the end of the school year to increase the academic accountability for our schools and our principals participating in our data chats which we'll talk about in just a minute and those data chats are designed to make adjustments to our instructional practices our intervention pieces to increase academic achievement the second goal then is for us to create or to go through a comprehensive analysis of our title expenditures and program Effectiveness um so that we have all of that done to maximize our student achievement and so this evening a couple of pieces that we want to share with you that we're excited about the first pieces that we've had uh now including the summer data chat three data chats with our principals and we've had that throughout the summer which included going through our state assessment results from last year and their improv or their school instructional plans for this year we've held a data chat after each of Benchmark one and Benchmark two and then a third meeting is scheduled after Benchmark three those data chats consist of the principal myself the assistant superintendent in charge of that school and then Amy Horton who provides the data for us as well and in those data chats we talked very specifically about their progress as it relates to Benchmark results how students are progressing in each grade level what um what adjustments are being made to instructional practice or intervention or what have you at each School and their plans moving forward as we get closer to State assessment in terms of the other thing I want to mention about goal a or goal one with increased accountability is I've touched with touched on with the board in the past the fact that we are redesigning ischool for next school year and based upon the data that we collected from ischool in the past several years and looking at the best model possible for our students to be successful and to maximize our fiscal resources which is goal four we've redesigned high school for next year to place it back from a campus-based perspective rather than the the perspective that we have right now what we're finding is that we may have as many as 2 000 high school students register for ischool we staff high school for 2 000 students and within the first two weeks a thousand students drop the course and we don't ever change our staffing and then those students some of those students don't pick up other courses they get behind in credits and that can be a result of significant failure there and then additionally we are looking at making some additional changes which I'll share with the board at a later time specifically focused on what high school looks like from that school-based perspective and so we're excited about that and moving forward we're going to be limiting our high school high school opportunities for students either full-time or elective you know or taking a course or two to 800 students and that those students will be prioritized by seniors Juniors and then sophomores and we actually will be eliminating the opportunity for freshmen to take online courses based upon the data that we reviewed and their success rate and so we want to make sure that our students get a very firm footing in high school before we allow them to begin to venture off into some different learning Endeavors the second piece that I would like to highlight is the thorough evaluation that we are undertaking with our title grants and the allocations they're in the big piece that this year has allowed us um to focus upon is consistency in our title structures and so one of the things that we found is we began to look at our Title One programs is that our schools are working very hard but working in very different ways and in very different directions and so we've worked to bring intervention programs to be more specific we have taken many intervention opportunities and streamline those into those that we have seen success with and put time and resources within that and so one of the big pieces that we are using with our titles is a program called Achieve3000 and they are spending uh their time invested in that program as opposed to being scattered across five or six and so in that streamline we're starting to see a lot of success in that as we look forward into next year there are some redesign opportunities that we are bringing about with title to help us lower our class sizes in the primary grades specifically and so we're very excited about that additionally we've talked with the board and shared our plans as it relates to our summer PLC Institute with our principals and some of our directors and we are incredibly excited about summer workshop and the opportunity that our teachers are going to have all of our teachers are going to have in working in redesigning our curricular pieces as it relates to state standards and our pacing guides therein continuing on to goal B and I'll try to pick up the pace because there's four of those goals and I don't want to talk that long on each one of them but goal B has to do with culture and we want to increase our systems and procedures that help us to recruit and retain a highly qualified staff and our measurements of that are a couple pieces one um you know we are looking to increase and and you'll see that we have our attendance at recruiting fairs additionally we have an employee referral program that we wanted to see a large increase in um you know if our if our employees are helping recruit other employees to our district they should be rewarded for that and so we've started to really see an uptick in that as we move forward so with our first goal in 2122 we attended four career career fairs one of which was ours and certainly Career Fairs are starting to come back now um you know some of the out-of-state ones went away a little bit due to covid but they're starting to pop back in in 2223 we are scheduled to attend 10.

rigorous multi-year process please join me in congratulating Jill foreign [Applause] foreign okay next item on the board is item e board Communications yes Dr Lopez thank you Dr Streeter Dr Lopez vice president Holt and my fellow board members I want to thank Dr Streeter for attending the Arizona School Board Association bolts training on January 27th with me it was an informative day and I appreciate the opportunity to learn I also want to thank the Administration staff and students for the wonderful School site visits at MCAT and Quail Run I'm looking forward to visiting other campuses this year I also want to thank Butterfield and Coyote Trail Elementary schools for inviting me to their love of reading sessions on February 16th I truly believe the more you read the more you will know thank you go ahead Tom a couple things so we've had a whole bunch of people uh going up to the um building across the street can't think of the name right now to to look at the reading curriculum and I think that's awesome I think um the study session they said like 136 people had been there thus far and there's probably more uh since in the last couple of weeks but so there's been I don't know a dozen or more that people who I know who have gone through and looked at the materials um there's a couple issues with with you know individual texts that we're looking at but um by far the the The Impressions have been very favorable and I know that a lot of retired teachers have gone through and looked at everything and they're you know some of the more most frequent comments have have been gosh I wish I had something like this when I was a teacher so so I think that's really positive um also thankfully the AEL uh thing was was extended unfortunately just one more year they didn't they haven't solved it yet but um and I know representative Jones voted against it and she has her specific reasons however she she did uh call out Miranda as being the school district that is the exception you know to um to to why she voted against it so had other school districts in the state been like Marana she was she would have been as a board of it um but but um I think that's I think that speaks well for musd that you know lawmakers up there have have taken note of of the the fiscal responsibility that Miranda you know has has displayed over the years and and the um the regard that that the people up there hold us so that's kudos to everyone for that thank you all right next item is item F remarks from the public we do have one Miss York come on up yeah it'll turn okay good evening president Lopez members of the governing board Dr Streeter senior staff and community members my name is Rayna York I'm representing the Marana Education Association tonight first I want to take a second just to congratulate all of the Marana Educators being recognized this month for their outstanding contributions in education there have been a ton of them um I was especially thrilled to see recognitions for automotive teacher Mr citro from Marana High School and dance teacher Mrs Andrews from Mountain View because it highlights the needs to the need to invest in our electives and career education courses at all ages and we see such fantastic opportunities in those areas provided by professionals that make it meaningful um I also want to take a moment to thank the administration and specifically Mrs Reedy and for the thoroughness and transparency of the reading and writing curriculum adoption we appreciate the adopt that the adoption of a curriculum is happening because the administration listened to the needs and concerns of our Educators for curriculum and we're responsive in addition Mrs Reedy made sure to include a wide variety of Educators in the vetting and selection of the curriculum to ensure that those impacted had a voice we believe that these collaborative efforts that respect the professional input of our Educators is one aspect that makes Marana a great District to work in it's been exciting to hear the very positive feedback from Educators and we appreciate the careful attention and thoughtfulness that this team has put into this thank you thank you next item is item G superintendent comments president Lopez governing board members members of the audience since our last meeting we've had several events in in some of our board members have mentioned these uh so I'm going to Echo some of those sentiments uh just this week we were very pleased to see that the aggregate expenditure limit was overridden allowing us to expend the funds that had already been appropriated to us unfortunately we know that we're going to be right back in this same situation a year from now unless we get a permanent fix I am hopeful that work will begin on a permanent fix so that we can continue to put our attention where it needs to be and not have sleepless nights wondering if we're going to be able to use the funds that continue to get appropriated to us I also want to Echo some of the sentiments that Mrs macronas shared on I really want to thank the Quail Run Elementary School team for opening their doors to Mrs mccrones and I on the second this was for another one of our superintendent governing board campus visits we were able to see a variety of activities on campus this included just differentiated instruction collaborative math lessons and I'm going to say many examples of guided reading it was many many examples of guided reading at Quail Run additionally we were able to meet with each employee group as well as their student council officers and really the common theme at Quail Run had to do with the strong Community feel and their appreciation for the support that everyone feels at Quail Run certainly the Quail Run team should be incredibly proud of the work that they put into place we had some great conversations we've got great feedback from teachers and students and staff we're very impressed with the level of support that this campus holds for each other and it's very clear that Quail Run is a special place with a community oriented culture in place also previous to that I want to thank the MCAT team that opened their doors to Mr Carlson uh Mrs macronus and myself back on January 20th for that superintendent uh board campus visit we had a great albeit very busy uh day with a well thought out agenda that allowed us to get into just about every Camp every classroom on that campus additionally we enjoyed meeting with every employee group as well as their student leadership team and these conversations were both engaging and presented a common theme around the community and family feel that's present at MCAT and I think that really speaks to the true commitment that that staff has to their students and this was felt and reflected back when we met with the students their comments included this is a community We are family I I'm seen as a person here I feel heard by my teachers everyone is here to help this is a community the MCAT team should be incredibly proud as they clearly have a dynamic culture in place on that campus also want to Echo Mrs mccrones comments on the bolts training back on January 27th this was really a part of the continued orientation awardsmanship that Mrs macronas has been engaged in I think one of the things that I think we both enjoyed was just the opportunity to share our table with a couple of board members from the Catalina Foothill school district and really what that did is allowed us to compare some of the best practices some of the things that they do in their District some of the things that we do in our district and I think that I can speak for both of us when I say that we look forward to sharing some of those insights with our entire board at a at a future date and of course I want to thank the members of the community that joined us on back on January 17th for the bond oversight committee if you're a Community member interested in the bond oversight committee keep an eye out for future announcements as that's a committee that will be ongoing as we move forward with some of the bond projects that we're a part of the November ballot initiative that was approved and this concludes my report for tonight okay thank you next item is item H consent agenda can I have a motion iMovie prove the consent agenda as presented uh the consent agenda has uh approval for voucher reports personal reports some gift and donations out of state travel and just some updated open enrollment capacity for school grades and programs all those in favor aye next item is item I and finish business we have none so we'll move to item J new business Mr contorno I was going to read that title but it's like a paragraph So you go for it thank you um in November of 2022 voters authorized the issuance of 90 million dollars of Class B School Improvement bonds for various District projects in order to obtain the dollars to complete these projects the district must issue the first series of 35 million dollars of this of of this authorization another in other words we need to sell the bonds to investors to gain that capital um due to statutory constraints ballot language dictated the use of these dollars proceeds from the sale must be used for the following categories campus Improvement and renovation to existing sites new school and facility construction technology and security upgrades and enhancements in student transportation what we're doing what I hope we're doing tonight is there's going to be two resolutions in front of you that allows us to move forward with with the help of our bond consultant and and to sell these issue these bonds so there's two resolutions the first resolution is the issuance of that 35 million dollars the second one is in light of the current Bond and investment rates the district is positioned to refinance several higher rated bonds for a savings to the taxpayers present value savings is currently estimated to be over 1.1 million dollars that's considering current Bond rates however this number can fluctuate daily depending on market conditions until the bonds are actually sold for the resolution we will not execute this um if the those numbers fall below 625 thousand dollars we would wait until an uh a different time when we issue different Bonds in order to see where that market is so we're right now anticipating it to be over a million dollars I have all the financed documents in the in the in this in my office um yep so that that's the agenda item there's you're voting on two different resolutions promotion I moved at the governing board adopt the resolution exhibit a authorizing the insurance of school Improvement bonds with the parameters set forth in the resolution providing for annual Levy of a tax for the payments of the bonds delegating the authority to approve certain matters relating to the bonds to Dan can Turner CFO and approve in approving the form of Finance documents including the preliminary official statement I further move that the governing board adopt the resolution exhibit B authorizing the insurance and resale of refunding bonds of the district foreign thank you are there any questions I just have a couple okay when do you think the sale will take place um probably it's anticipated we will get the proceeds in April but I don't remember if the sales actually is the week after the sales um late February early March the proceeds will actually come April 10th is what it says okay and for the interest rate okay so it says that I guess statute says that says that the interest rate can't exceed five and a half percent all right so um so it's just going to be the market conditions correct now if the market conditions want a higher interest rate then then what happens and then we'll discuss at a later date right now the the interest rate that they're seeing for issuances of similar Bond rating that we're we actually have a bond rating called Amaro but we'll buy insurance to get the double A I guess it is um similar size issues by similar districts in Arizona are seeing about 3.8 to 4.

you some good okay this is what's happening uh we're gonna share some amazing things that are and what I'm going to do is I'm kind of going to give you guys an update on the where we are on the stem certification process and then Courtney get up here kid Courtney's going to actually be the brains of the operation because she's going to kind of show you what what we have found and where we're going to go with it so where we are in the process I'm going to kind of give you a history lesson we're going to go back to April May of last school year and Grand Creek kind of decided at that time we were going to I don't know because Pioneer I guess paved the way and really just bite the bullet and see what we can do with this certification Lily and I know what we agreed to I mean it was the process started in August our staff came in and I don't think they were running I really think we had to Sprint to get to October in order to check off a lot of boxes show a lot of evidence give documentation on what we were doing looked at as a school that was teaching stem or being a leader in the stem area so in October we submitted our first proposal if you will and we had to wait until December 16th that the Friday before Christmas break and we got our notification and we just missed it three points Four Points we were so stinking close and I was what staff didn't know at the time is I know from my research on this that most schools it took them two years to even get to this point so what we had done and just from yeah basically August to October to get to that point in December was like blew me away so we then provided more evidence gave more documentation send it back in and then just this past Friday February 3rd we got our second notification that we made it we had earned at that point the next step and the next step is the big step and that is the site visit that will be on March the 14th where the idoe and her little teams are going to come in and they're going to interview kids staff custodians Cooks whoever and look everywhere to see if indeed Grand Creek is worthy if you will of this title of being stem certified so where are we now what we had learned is through this truly arduous process we learned where our staff was they grew oh my God it's amazing how far we have grown not only stem but just through the whole process how we've learned to trust each other but what we have found is we know we had rock stars in the building that were great at one area but then we also found thanks right you know the old saying you're only strong is the weakest thing so what Courtney has developed is the what now part of it you know what happens if you become certain you know a certified school we win the championship if you will now what you know what do you do then so what we have learned is we've got to keep improving because all on their weak points what's the the gain is in our students education you know we I truly believe we are providing we have parents they're giving me some money right I think we're providing a credible education in Kaminsky and this is just one part of it so Courtney kind of take him through your next Journey on where we want to go okay so um don't hate me I think it's the teacher in me but I'm giving you all homework that we're going to kind of do along with me um look Earl he's leaving I know so and the reason I want to give this to all of you is because this is the same piece of paper that we gave to our staff and we actually just gave it to them um earlier this week and we've been able to collect a lot of data and a lot of valuable information um just in a few days um maybe like um but so what we did is whenever we were going through this and feel free to read through it as I'm talking and if you want to Mark where you think you would be at um with these six different initiatives that we have going on kind of right now um feel free to kind of see where you would also be at with our teachers because as we were going through the stem certification process we were able to really really highlight what Grand Creek is doing well at and um I mean to just to say that our teachers are amazing absolutely it's true and you can see it on our kids faces when you walk in the door you can see it on our parents faces um so we know we have amazing teachers but whenever we were going through the the stem certification process we were able to really highlight it and really show the state of Indiana you know with evidence how amazing they really are um and so doing that we were able to highlight it but then we were also able to see um you know all the huge tasks that we are giving our staff and the tasks that we are giving our our teachers and putting that on their shoulders and so we kind of narrowed it down to six basic initiatives or six main initiatives that we are all kind of trying to funnel together and teach and you know make our kids successful and so we have those six you know it's the the first one is you know Tech with just computers and iPads and are you using those in your classroom um we have Google Suites so that's just you know your Google Sheets forms documents slides pbl training project-based learning we have our Sim in the classroom not necessarily just as a pull out in the stem lab but you know our our teachers confident in doing it in their classroom in their curriculum um udl that's the one that we are currently we have little pots in our our each schools that are receiving training to be able to bring it back to train teachers on and then computer science and for Graham Creek um right now our Focus from now until May is really going to kind of push more towards that computer science initiative but we kind of broke it down as we were gathering evidence for our Sim certification and we found that um a lot of our teachers we've all been trained in these these different initiatives but then whenever we would go back to our teachers and we would ask them you know what are we doing with them we didn't really have an end goal in mind a lot of our teachers were like well I'm trained in this I'm trained in this and I'm trying to do this I'm trying to do this but I have no idea what I'm actually doing with it and so Mr Hernan and I sat down and we were kind of like okay where's our point a where's our point B and then how do we get there and so we kind of decide our point a was just going to be back whenever the 2016 standards came out um that was kind of the easiest Baseline and then again when they they updated in that 2020.

of Education we've been working on this forever but we are at the start of the Town side of the deliberations process and so for those who are listening on TV uh this is uh it's become an annual event where uh we have the three boards together to hear the Board of Education uh budget presentation and have a chance to ask questions um when John and I sat down to figure out what we wanted to do tonight we actually put this into two components there's a lot going on in the schools right now and we don't have many opportunities as a board of education we spend a lot of time on them but to share with the other boards some of the important things going on so the first part of the presentation I'm going to turn over to Dr Burrell to talk about what's going on with the new cles school where are we on some of the other big initiatives that are going on and then we will turn it over back over to me and I will do the presentation on the budget itself the budget isn't actually a pretty straightforward budget this year it's all about inflation there's a couple of other small things going on that tend to offset each other but the storyline is the cost of doing business so my goal when we get to the budget is to take it down a layer right and because talking about uh budget budgetary drivers that are inflationary it is actually quite a pretty dry presentation it's like this is what's happening and this is what what's causing it but I think it's important to understand a couple of the layers down what are causing the drivers what's going on with our arpa grants what's going on with CLE s you know what are the what are the savings coming from so my goal would be to take it down one layer and I will say we've given everybody their budget books um and we have we'll have multiple opportunities to I think meet with these this group in different forms over the next month as we go through budget deliberation so we would anticipate you know expect questions and look forward to questions and we expect that more questions will come as time goes on so um so this is and I we have the entire board here and we have the key leaders of the administration are also here in case there's questions that are going on in any particular school so so with that I'd like to turn it over to Dr Burrell to give a uh you know some insights into some of the things that are going on thank you Bob so thank you everybody welcome it's great to see everyone and uh and like Bob said um it's very important to uh acknowledge uh everybody here uh and all their effort thank the board thank the finance committee for all their great work on this and certainly the team to my to my side and behind me here the incredible Cracker Jack team we have that's put a lot of time in us the Bob will get to it but the budget process in uh on the administrative side of things starts October one and so we're four months into working on this budget at this point so I'm going to bring you through some of the big initiatives they're not going to have budget numbers tied to them it's going to be a bit of a story we'll walk you through and uh from there I'll turn it over to Bob like you said so the the three big items I'm going to discuss at the beginning of our presentation is Candlewood Lake Elementary School in the transition I'm going to walk you through some of the completion timeline pieces which I think will be of significant interest not only to the public and we have this uh up on the website but for our boards here tonight the transition of the the two elementary schools and fifth grade to the building and with that right sizing of whiskey near remember whiskey air will become a different and new school it'll be a different culture there we're losing almost 200 students to Candlewood Lake from there so we're going to have a six through eight building and let's not forget when we right-size the Portables that have been there for many decades will not be will be demolished they will not be there any longer the other thing that's very important that affects not only the elementary and the Middle School school students but the high school students as well is our healthy school start times initiative we actually if everything went perfectly with the building and we didn't have the supply chain delays and all of that and we would have been in the new school this year and we would have started the new start time so I'm going to talk a little bit about that we're starting that next year and then there's a couple of other really big key initiatives that we're working on now that are going to carry us through over the next couple of years and especially into next year that I want to share with you so I just want to take my time and walk you through the timeline so everybody can get a sense of this um you could see many of the grade level classrooms will be complete by the end of this month on the interior of Candlewood Lake in March some more classrooms will be complete Terrazzo flooring on the second floor will be complete the administrative offices cafeteria multi-purpose room including flooring will be complete our media centers by the end of March should be complete and certainly some more bathrooms as we go through so over the next gosh seven weeks there is going to be a lot that gets done on the interior and I can tell you that with Dr pepsoski we walk the building every Friday and we're seeing it every week you can see the difference it's really really moving along nicely and by the way we just got internet there yesterday so things continue to move along in April you can see there that the cafeteria in the multi-purpose room uh wall finishes will be complete finishing up on the Pre-K and K side of the building will be done elevator inspections we have two elevators in the new building so if one is ever down we'll have that backup and then the main stairwell should be installed by the end of April that also includes Terrazzo materials in May the gym remaining bathrooms and various other spaces with Terrazzo flooring finish up in June the main hallway area of Terrazzo flooring that's kind of the entrance area and other wall finishes are finished we also anticipate that the entry Bridges and the brook exposing the Culvert into the open Brook will be complete and we start demolition once uh the staff and students are out of Huckleberry we start demolition right away on on huckleberry and then finally over the summer the really big stuff that's going to happen over the summer is the site work is going to go on which is the parking lot work and so forth the playgrounds and the playscapes and the driveways and all of that interestingly I want to just bring you to a map and this site plan just to orient you the right side of the diagram is Candlewood Lake Road the yellow portion is the north side of the building and the red is the actual current Huckleberry Hill school that's the footprint of school I'll explain everything in just a second to the left the hollowed out white area that is the new school right there so you just want to orient your your visual perspective to what we're looking at here so new school here Candlewood Lake here's current huckleberry and this and this is Candlewood Lake Road so you just see this coming down so what we're going to have to start this when we get working on everything and work over the summer is a finished building here and all the green is finished parking lot and driveway that will utilize in the fall because Huckleberry Hill while the demolition will start on the school here where the north parking lot needs to be built and the other entryway that will all be worked on over the summer but will not be complete at the start of the school year what's making it possible for us to move into the school is the south parking lot will be finished and something we've been asking for for a long time and Ong was able to make this work is the temporary parking lot because what many people don't look at is all the ancillary staff Beyond classroom teachers and we have 200 adults that'll be working in and around Huckleberry Hill okay there's a lot of people there in terms of our staff so we need that much parking so we add parking here and then there will be safe parking along the driveway to make that work for everyone and that will be the fall we'll have the temporary lot in this finish lot buses will come in there's turnaround opportunity in here we're working on with the fire marshal police bus company everyone we're having that all worked on and so we'll be working on those plans and how that all fits in what'll happen by November is the entire area will be finished the asphalt plants as we know when it gets colder they close they're able to get the parking lot in the driveway done and we are in really good shape by mid-november Thanksgiving and everything will be done and it'll be obviously much easier for driving and the more space you know to the optimal design this part here is a grassy area this will be finished in the spring of 24.

unmute your timer will begin there are two speakers speaking I am speaking to you all this evening as a form of communication since my request to meet with Dr Bauer has been put out until February 15th by her please allow me to share how I am feeling after being publicly humiliated at the superintendent's meeting Thursday January 26th at Adelante Academy I am still feeling utterly disappointed disregarded and humiliated I am still completely shocked two weeks later that superintendent Bauer Cesar Tarico Jesus would allow a member of the community to discredit a teacher in such a manner all of these individuals represent my employer the Alum Rock School District and they should have been there to support me I expect a superintendent Bauer to have rejected redirected those comments to a more appropriate time and place I expected to have been supported acknowledged and valued at the exact moment given the nature of this meeting it was an extension of my work environment and Mr tariko failed to ensure the city free of hostility I am reading this on behalf of maestro ideas this incident has left me feeling demoralized unvalued and not supported by the District administration these feelings are taking a toll on my health and on my moral unfortunately superintendent Bauer has not had the time to meet with me sooner to discuss my concerns from the meeting until then my work environment continues to feel hostile and unhealthy I am holding the arc District accountable for what occurred on January 26th and for enabling a hostile work environment if this happened to me directly in front of Alum Rock Administration it can happen to any of us teachers at any time this incident leaves me feeling devastated and helpless so this evening I ask all of you trustees and superintendent Bauer how do you plan on finding a resolution to this incident so that my colleagues and fellow teachers do not find themselves in this forsaken situation I currently find myself in remember actions speak louder than words thanks our next speaker is Ricardo Garcia Ricardo please unmute yourself the moment you begin speaking the timer will begin good evening thank you very much for taking my my call I'm Ricardo Garcia I'm a lifelong resident of Alum Rock I went to school in this District I've been necessary for 50 years I have two fourth grade students and my comments are specifically to the recent so not recent incidents regarding the removal of a teacher there at the school first of all I want to make a few important points I'm pro-teacher I'm a teacher myself I'm a high school teacher and and the teachers here in our district they're undervalued and they're getting attacked regarding this incident I really like to see that the district and Dr Bauer uh taking a more proactive stance to let them know how important uh an asset they are to our to our district and our community number two I want him for Dr Bauer and the school board to our next speaker is Veronica Talton Veronica please unmute yourself the timer will begin when you've been speaking good evening trustees superintendent Bauer and school Community my name is Veronica Talton I'm an African-American educator here in the district I speak tonight on behalf of black students and Educators who are experiencing racism discrimination and Prejudice in our schools and I'll be reading an excerpt from James Baldwin's 1963 speech a talk to teachers it is a the educational experience isn't about standardized testing and performance it's a place for students to become holistic individuals who are cared for and protected Educators must be leaders and advocates in this nation and support our students as they examine their society Educators must be proactive in dismantling white supremacy and anti-blackness in our educational institutions if education is just and seeks to inspire equity in the values of true democracy Educators and the students they teach will transform our country to hold liberty and justice for all and I end in honor of Tyree Nichols our next speaker is Jonathan almerido Jonathan please meet yourself the timer will begin the moment you start speaking good evening my name is Jonathan almarito and I'm a Filipino teacher here in Alum Rock I also stayed in solidarity with black community members in our district who experience that racism discrimination and Prejudice in schools that Veronica spoke of I do this because as a non-black person who's been in spaces where black community members have shared their pains and the Pains of other black people I believe them and I demand that the district work towards eradicating anti-blackness and in our schools and in our community um it's important for everybody to have a black person uh who's a mentor in their life because it enables them to have a sense of empathy towards people who are black as well as give some sort of mentorship opportunities to learn and grow and understand the world better I never had a black adult figure in my life and I know that my experiences as a kid would have been richer if I were able to learn from but above all black Educators in our district deserve a place in which they're loved and cared for and they deserve to be embraced by their places of work uh thank you for listening our next speaker is Toby Toby please unmute yourself the timer will begin the moment you begin speaking good evening my name is Toby Nielsen good evening board members and um superintendent Bauer and members of the Alum Rock Community I'm a teacher in this district and as a white identify a white person I'm also standing in solidarity with all black members of the Alum Rock Community um and I want to remind the board that on Jan on July 9th of 2020 the area um teachers brought a resolution with that asked that a-r-u-s-e-d commit to hiring and retaining additional black Educators and administrators district-wide instead of that we have lost black Educators due to racism and I am appalled I want to see the board step forward to this commitment thank you for listening to my comments our next speaker is Jose a Miranda Jose please unmute yourself the timer will begin the moment you begin speaking good evening my name is Jose Alejandro Miranda and I'm a current student at St Mary's College and former student and other Atlanta dual Language Academy I'd like to address this to Ms Diaz first of all I hope you are doing well about two weeks ago my parents told me in about about an incident that occurred at a meeting two weeks ago where I was told um words were directed towards you with negative connotations when I was told this I was infuriated that someone could have such bad words towards a teacher who has shaped my life I began to reflect and acknowledge the vast support and help Miss Diaz has granted me during my time in Atlanta and Beyond she is a teacher who truly cares for Student Success and pushes one of us to our limits you care for students more than just inside the classroom it is because of you that I am now a passionate dancer everybody for corico I'm a graduate of development College Prep I thank you for pushing you not pushing me not to reach my limit and take risk I thank you from the bottom of my heart for all that you have done for me as it has shaped me to be a great individual I am today I truly wish that this incident would not have happened and I want you to know that yes our next speaker is Raul Adelante Raul please unmute yourself the timer will begin when you begin speaking my concern is for our student School community and for our teachers we need a strong caring leader like Gutierrez was one who will complement support and carry out our hopes we need to feel that our superintendent on board is going to move forward and make up for the lack of respect and transparency we also need our superintendent to support and Empower our teachers with this said I was upset and I stand out one of our teachers that myself is to take a bashing from a former student who happens to be the daughter of a school board member especially when you stated that this meeting was not going to entertain any Personnel issues yet you allowed this on a personal note yes we didn't know that could get us back or someone who is going to embrace and facilitate a healthy successful School we don't need a merry-go-round of Administrators thank you our next speaker is Maya Gonzalez Maya please unmute yourself the timer will begin when you begin speaking hi my name is Maya Gonzalez I am speaking on behalf of Maestra Diaz I attended from kinder until I graduated eighth grade in 2016.

our partners UC Irvine Cal State Fullerton Fullerton College Cypress College the city of Anaheim and really now over 90 corporate and non-profit partners who believe in your future we're so proud that we are probably the first district to teach Beyond test scores and we call this the five C's probably the most important life skills that you will ever have and we are committed to your not just your actually see let's just kind of gauge how many folks are actually here from some of the groups that we mentioned earlier so if you're a certificated member please stand up and if you're along the back walls just raise your hand let's kind of get a certificated member please stand up okay on any of our sites okay so we have counselors teachers social workers [Applause] um okay perfect awesome thank stand up or raise your hand awesome thank you and if you are a student please stand up awesome that's awesome well thank you again um and obviously everything we're doing today and everything we do on a day-to-day basis is for our students and our community um if we could go to our next slide please and just bear patience with us as we go from one side to another so we'd like to start all of our Gatherings and meetings at our sites and at the district level with a reflection on our mission and vision and our core values as you can see he here on the screens behind me our mission and our and our vision here the Anaheim Union High School District in partnership with the Greater Community will graduate socially aware civic-minded students who are life ready by cultivating the soft and hard skills as our superintendent referred to the five C's and our vision to create a better world through unlimited you our core values if you go to the next slide here are district core values that we believe in these values will help us achieve our vision and our mission and ensure that we are doing what is best for our students and families please take a moment to review our core values keeping in mind the importance of the lcap process and let's think of a core value that resonates with you and how it might align to the work we are about to engage in through this process give you a few seconds to review those core values and you also have them in your your spiral notebook that we had we gave you foreign with that core value in mind let's go ahead and go on to the next slide so as as our superintendent Mr matsuda mentioned earlier we've moved away from traditional ways of teaching and that's teaching to the test and we're focusing now and we've been focusing our instructional priorities on skill based education the 5c's voice purpose and the technical skills the our what we call our cpsf the career preparing assistance framework helps us make good on our promise to our students and our families and that you see on the screen again the promise to provide thoughtful relevant and engaging experiences that prepare students for Meaningful and purposeful lives next slide please so the lcap okay so here at our district we see the lcap development process as an opportunity to tell our story to highlight our accomplishments to gain comprehensive insights from you and our all of our educational partners that are here in the room this is year two of three in their in our alcat process so what's the purpose of the lcap right that's the question what's what's the purpose our purpose for the lcap this year is to assess and evaluate last year's priorities and based on our most current data that you will be exposed to and you'll get to to assess and review and reflect on we will con we will come to a consensus to maintain existing priorities and or make changes to them this is a time to dream big and make recommendations based on our needs during the focus groups we will be looking at different types of district-wide data both satellite and map data recommendations that come from these focus groups will then be considered and implemented as our budget allows us to now let's keep in mind that we are in declining enrollment and there are other factors like one-time monies attendance and Ada that can also impact our budget the lcap development organization and planning is a unifying process that involves significant and purposeful engagement with our educational partners if we go to the next slide please so when having our conversations around the data that we will be looking at and making recommendations let's keep in mind our important student groups that are that our alcop calls out our social socioeconomically disadvantaged students our English Learners our students with disabilities our homeless Youth and our foster youth when looking at these groups what auhsd core value comes to mind for you and why comes to mind to you and why so again thinking of that of the core values so we could go to the next slide back to the core values so the groups that we just talked about what core value comes to mind and why so we're going to do a think a quick think pair share activity so we're going to give you about 30 seconds to think about the core value that comes to mind when thinking of our students at the lcap the student groups at the lcap calls out and why does that come to mind and then with your partner you will have a conversation about which core value comes to mind and why okay 30 seconds to think and then we'll pair share okay with the partner to your right or to your left or in groups of three let's have a conversation foreign [Music] okay we're gonna take about 20 more seconds it starts finishing our thoughts up okay so we'd like to have just a couple of share outs so would anyone like to share out and just what core value came to mind and we could put the student groups back on on the slide and what what core value came to mind and why anyone that would like to show I will summarize what was said any volunteers yes we have a student right up here they can't really temples so thank you for that so you said number three acid-based instructional approach focused on our marketing strengths potential in particular you talked about our English language Learners thank you one more can we have one more show yes thank you another one of our students and number four and moving the needle towards equity and Justice and in particular you talked about our students who are Foster youth homeless students with disabilities right and making sure they have the same opportunities as everyone else so thank you for that thank you for sharing that okay we could go to the next slide please okay so here what we have what we have here in our our three um alcap our lcap goals these are the goals that we came up with through this process a few years back that are aligned to the eight State priorities our district vision our district Mission and core values every year we like to take a moment to revisit them and ensure that they continue to represent our district vision mission and core values so what we're going to ask is uh we'll read each one of them okay and then we'll do a thumbs up for consensus to maintain or a neutral thumb for anyone who has a recommendation any recommendations for any of the three lcap goals we will obviously document and then we will bring that back to our steering committee um and and and revisit the recommendations that were made tonight so lcap goal number one and just because of the mic and we and this is being live streamed I'm going to go ahead and read them out instead of having volunteers do it so all students will demonstrate college career and life Readiness and Success Through implementation of the five C's that's our cap goal number one so as we think about that goal are we going to give it a thumbs up and continue with the exact same goal or do we want to you know give it a neutral thumb and and make a recommendation for us to consider okay so on the count of three let's see a thumbs up or neutral thumbs one two three okay we could help scan the room for any neutral thumbs do we see any one that wants to give we do we see one somewhere okay yes we go ahead so the recommendation is for to revisit this goal and think about um in terms of the the work being done the workload and the Stress and Anxiety it may cause and if there's another way to incorporate that or at least address that through the goals okay all right thank you for that and I think that was the only one correct okay all right so moving on to lcap goal number two provide meaningful educational engagement opportunities for all parents and families to advocate for all students that is our cap goal number two as we think about number two is it are we going to uphold it with the thumbs up are we going to make a recommendation with the neutral thumb okay on the count three one two and three help us scan the room I think we're good one sideways yes correct outside of eight to five hours which I'm sure are difficult because right okay thank you so the recommendation is we have many working parents at each of our sites um typically working from you know hours like eight to five so providing more options more flexible options for parents to be involved and as we are planning these events and then we have another thank you is that correct that okay another neutral thumb okay so I'm sorry after hours so again on on the topic of after hours we have events that happen at our at our you know partner higher ed partner schools like Cal State Fullerton you know Fulton College Cypress College and UCI who are all part of the anion collaborative um and those typically take place during the day for our parents it's it's parent workshops so maybe bringing those to the campus instead and having um after working hours options okay so thank you for the recommendation okay was was there any other yes our principal principled meetings or the background also I'd like to see more Workshop in I know it might be tough right but we do only speaks back right so more flexible more virtual options right is what I'm hearing and then also considering um the uh for our Spanish-speaking folks or folks that speak uh language other than English and it's a it's a you know any site to have more options for them as well in their native language okay perfect thank you and then I think I saw one more over here okay foreign so the recommendation also considers Saturday academies as days to hold these some of these workshops and parent events okay thank you we will bring that all that back to the steering committee as well all right and then our our third lcap goal is provide and nurture a safe reflective responsive and positive School culture so that's our third El Cap goal again as we think about that goal are we going to give it a thumbs up maintain or a neutral thumb and have some some recommendations okay on the count of three one two and three okay I I think I see some neutral thumbs so we're going to start on this side one yep so if I heard so bring back the um set again so add culturally responsive to the goal thank you okay and then did I see another one over here yes okay so recommendations to revisit open enrollment to honors classes and classes like that and and consider uh students that may be um seem to be more a little more challenging for them and what can we do to better support those students and including the students that are in their um you know trying to be successful does that summarize it okay thank you we have one here so something that calls out their emotional well-being or social emotional well-being okay we got that down thank you okay um we have another one back here so yeah so that's that's the question is how how are we going to go about achieving this goal and that's what the next um three sessions are about right the focus group sessions that's where we'll dive deeper into how what does that look like okay and what previous recommendations have been made all right and we have one here foreign okay so recommendation is to you know focus more on on campus safety as a part of this goal okay and I'm pretty sure that's something we'll dive into in the in the sessions as well okay okay we have another one so recommend a recommendation to consider adding the word restorative somewhere in the restorative practices processes okay got that thank you anything else we have uh two here so we'll go here first and then we'll head over there yes so so again dealing with mental health which I know that was a recommendation and then that that will definitely we'll dive into that much deeper in the focus group areas but definitely the we hear the mental health piece so we'll see how we could have it more reflected in the goal and the last one right yes absolutely okay maintain we have uh facilities being maintained updated and then I see that we have one more from from a student foreign initiatives so the recommendation for more student driven initiatives to help keep our schools safe okay all right all right so thank you for that awesome okay so we're going to go ahead and move on to the next slide okay so some of the data so over the next um three sessions we will be diving into some data data that as you see on this slide here it's different types of data from satellite data to map data Street data is is is what you see here right this is Street data data that we call Street data our interviews Gatherings where we get we just collected some Street data some feedback from you folks right um so that will be an ongoing process but it's more formalized when we talk about more formalized data we're talking about looking at Satellite data and some map data so satellite data would be in the form of for example some of our traditional markers like our graduation rates our district graduation rates our district a through G rates and things like that attendance where map data might be more surveys right that we give district-wide now in terms of site specific data a lot of our sites have been doing that now we are we are we we had a parent lcap orientation for a parent that were new to the process a few weeks ago and we heard loud and clear that they want to see more of that at the sites so we did bring that up with our principals and we do have a plan to not only Implement that for this year where our principals during the month of March are going to be inviting parents to to look at more site-specific data right but also moving forward how we can do that consistently on a year-to-year basis um and and so you'll see more of that for our staff I know that all of our sites look at site-specific data already so this is some of the data that we we will be looking at and again you know the the the emphasis being that the data highlights obviously some of the things that we're doing well but also asking the questions what what's what's missing right or or what is it that we can do better right so when you look at this data from that let from that you know from an inquiry um lens what what asks those questions that we should be asking of the data okay um moving on to our next slide so our learner progress so again we're we're um we're look we're taking the opportunity here to tell our story going back to one of the previous slides highlight our accomplishments and gain comprehensive insights from you our educational Partners through the lcap process we want to identify our priorities based on more on on our most recent data so here's some recent data this is a time to dream big okay so we're talking now about when you go into these focus group sessions over the next three meetings this is a time to dream big and make recommendations based on our needs the needs of our district and in particular the groups that are outcap is is calling out right the the um you know the yells and the SP and our students with IEPs and our foster Youth and so the five groups that we talked about right during the focus groups we will be looking at different types of District wide data both satellite and map data recommendations that come from these focus groups will then be considered and implemented as our budget allows us to as we as we talked about before okay so again we have some satellite data here as we see we have data from five years ago and then our most recent data we see our graduation rates district-wide from five years ago and then five years later right this past year a3g completion rates so on and so forth so as you scan this data what comes to mind right what questions comes to mind what celebrations do we see what are the questions that we need to be asking okay so I'm sure a lot of and if we were to make this a session where we had tables and we're doing table talks we would give you time to have that discussion amongst you guys right which is what we do a lot at our a lot of our workshops and in the classroom and things like that right so questions that have come up in the past is well I want to see more site relevant data what about the school the community that I live in what does that look like for the community that I live in well and then you break that down even further right you disaggregate it even further well what about our El students how are they graduating are students with disabilities what are their rates their a through G rates right so you break that down even further right um some people might ask well how do we compare to other districts like that's that's great to see that we're moving in the right direction but how do we compare to other districts to just neighboring districts if we go to the next slide um here's some some other data in regards to from our our higher ed Partners so they also track our students through the Anaheim collaborative which a lot of you are aware of or or know know a lot about it we have a partnership with UCI Cal State Fullerton Fullerton College and Cypress College where they're tracking our Co our students that are coming to them so some recent data that they have shared with us is the average UCI student retention rate from students that don't belong to auhsd that are at UCI is 86 to 88 for our auhsd students it's 95 to 99 right so that's something to celebrate our students that go to UCI from our district are having more success than students that go to UCI from other districts and we're talking about one of the top UCS in not only in the state but in in our in our country right okay moving on to the next one so here's some more relevant data in terms of how do we compare to other districts so you see again five years ago our graduation I'm sorry our a through G rates right you see where the ones that are highlighted in yellow so you see Anaheim Union at the top and then the ones are the highlighted in yellow are the district that we're the districts that we are ahead of when it comes to a through G rates we weren't ahead of too many just a couple of districts five years later through the work that we've done um through the lcap process all the hard work that goes on at our sites with our teachers counselors you know sir uh classified staff everyone involved right our parents um through the Anaheim collaborative five years later we've surpassed so many districts when it comes to a through G data but again what questions can we ask of this data yes definitely something to celebrate okay but as we continue to push ourselves as we continue to you know put positive tension on our organization because at the end of the day we're happy with this data but we want to continue to do better for our students and our families and our community what questions can we ask of this data right how about we break it down further let's look at our students what students are we talking about that are succeeding are they succeeding at the same rates when you compare when you talk about you know a student that might be foster youth versus a student that isn't Foster youth right things like that if we go to the next slide our graduation rates very similar in 2017 we were ahead of just a couple of districts okay five years later through all the work that we just talked about all the hard work going on in our district you know thinking of our framework cpsf the instrument the focus on instruction in the classroom our community service model that we're well that we've been implementing in our district now we are ahead of many many districts that are our neighboring districts okay but again what questions can we ask of this data okay all right moving on to the next slide okay so now we are very fortunate and humbled to have Dr Jose Moreno as one of our educational Partners joining us this evening um to to help us through the next 20 minutes so Dr Moreno is an associate professor of Latino education and policy studies and past share of the Chicano Latina Latino studies department at California State University of Long Beach Dr Moreno recently served two terms as a city council member in Anaheim having served as mayor Pro tem in 2018.

so I'm down to two or three years so we averaged it out we have about 14 years of experience with about four years average at bcms so Miss Cochran also had to fill out like a timeline and a checklist set up rooms for the interviews set up times with our paraprofessionals they did have us initially set up times with students but then they were like you know what we're just going to meet them at lunch and make it easy for them and kind of walked around and interviewed them at so then after all the pre-work they actually came on our campus and they really engrossed into our culture and who we were so the day the first day started with a leadership meeting at 6 30 in the morning bright and early um which it was okay for us we're used to six thirty six forty five they had just traveled the day before so they they were coming from all over so we had met Kevin and Ted that day that morning and they just wanted to kind of talk with the leadership team and get a feel and it was nice because they were they had some great probing questions that helped our leadership feel comfortable enough to really come open about some of the things happening on campus The Good the Bad and the Ugly so it was great to have that time with the leadership with Kevin and Ted then um Tech kind of stayed on campus she did a lot of the informal observations watching the systems watching our passing periods just kind of the laying low behind the scenes things while Kevin and Miss Cochrane went around and did rigger walks so they were going into classrooms random classrooms that Kevin chose and they did what was happening what instruction was happening what was the output that the students were doing um how much was teacher talk versus how much was student talk so really going digging in deep there so then um they like I said they both Kevin and Ted did a lot of informal conversations with staff members uh Ted went out to fifth grade recess and she was like find me some kids to chat with and so I was like okay let's get some kiddos over here and it was cute because she had said one of the groups really had a nice Insight of some things processes on campuses and then the other groups she talked to they focused solely on PE and and their their distaste for PE or their why don't we do this in PE so it was kind of interesting to see that um then on that first day Miss Cochran did sit down with Kevin one on one and they kind of talked about what they saw in classrooms um what her experiences as an instructional leader um what she knows about instruction and data-driven instruction and all of that first day um yeah I was with Miss Cochran because like I said we do everything together um and it kind of had some Revelations right then and there we kept saying what data do we use uh Galileo what else do we use um Galileo second quarter uh what else uh Galileo third quarter so we really started thinking like gosh our curriculum we're not using our assessment pieces as we should be or is there assessment pieces that are you know helpful for us so that was kind of you know it was really just an informal conversation he would ask questions and you didn't realize that he was like asking those questions because it was just part of a conversation so it was it was good it was a good comment and then I was also interviewed one-on-one regarding my job on campus my experience what my role is how often do I get pulled out of my role for different things and so she then was able to watch in action for the next two days what I do too so and even on that first day as I said they they did everything they went out to parent pick parent pick up they went out to buses they watched all of our systems in place day two um Kevin again met with Miss Patterson specifically for the discipline side yep that was just me and Kevin one thing I did Alone um but we did we discussed discipline I broke down 10 of our students as of January had been suspended at that point I believe it was 11 or 12 percent had been an in-school suspension for at least a day so those were some eye-opening numbers to to definitely see you know we have the new Progressive discipline plan we've been working on and so that was and then I started digging deeper and I was like okay well these kids are no longer on campus either they've gone to hearing or parents have chosen to take them out of school things of that nature so and and then again we just continued to talk well what do you think is causing these discipline issues what do you think are some solutions and he was like okay I have some ideas I'll get them to you okay cool so waiting for this it was a great it was a great opportunity to do a lot of that root cause they were seeing some Trends and we were like okay what do we have to do and they're like just hold on let's keep Gathering some data on us so um so Kevin and Miss Cochran then went around and did conditions walks so instead of looking for instruction rigor in the classroom they were looking at the classroom environment itself so what was the classroom welcoming was it conducive for student learning um where the were the students receiving feedback was it were this teachers using that feedback to then drive that instruction while they were doing that the third person of their party Tracy joined their team and She interviewed me regarding curriculum on the campus so asked about the implementation process the support process for returning teachers as well as new teachers the kind of she dug in deep what's what's the district's philosophy regarding the curriculum and Fidelity and all all those key words that that are used so that was interesting to sit down with her and like I said even with Kevin and tet and Tracy they were all just conversations it didn't feel like an interview it just felt like oh okay well tell me about this and how about this and so that was kind of me third day because Tracy joined us late she came back to do actual some observation of the curriculum being used in the classroom I was able to join her for a couple of those observations it was kind of interesting to see her take on she she had a lot of experience with our math and our reading curriculum she had great things to say about our reading and our math curriculum and so it was interesting to see her viewpoint and sit down and talk with her about how do we support our teachers our veteran teachers as well as our new teachers in using this curriculum but also finding the needs of our students and then she also observed two of our weekly PLC meetings she sat in on a fifth grade math and science planning meeting and then she also sat in our fifth grade ELA and social studies just happened to be the way this schedule fell so we got three days yes we did get three so after that um we waited for the initial report Kevin did send us the report before we sent it out to staff that way we could review it make sure that we understood what it what was in there um the initial read through was very reflective and it was reflective of things we already knew were happening but it's nice sometimes when someone else sees it and they kind of validate what we're seeing and what we're feeling so the report was broken down into several different observed sections so the classroom observations it was broken down as again like was said What was seen in the classrooms culture wise as well as rigor um they gave us their findings what they believe is happening and then a few recommendations were also provided for us to start looking up now um they did do a diagnostic diagnostic survey with our leadership team and so they had put the results in there of kind of what they had seen that was a little confusing to read I'm still kind of looking through it but and then they also broke down some of their visuals into graphs of what they saw in the classrooms and things like that next one so then at our January PD we met as an entire district for about 5-10 minutes then they broke us into different groups they did have us each individually in our own classrooms that way we were viewing it without any interruptions or any of that and they kind of just went over the they had a PowerPoint and they went over their observations with the staff and everything that we had already seen they were now showing the staff and letting them know okay these are what we saw these are some of our recommendations and I think that was very eye-opening and good for our staff to see again coming from a different perspective so after that meeting we had picked we were told to pick seven members three of which were Administration me Miss Cochran I consider Miss gelsinger admin um and then we had I know I know but she's part of our group she's part of your team we had Miss Justin 's grade math science teacher and then Renee maleckis who is our PTO president she is a parent on campus and her son is a fifth grader so she came and together we worked with Kevin to really break down some of our CNA and kind of go through some of the questions again that was another eye-opening part because we're going through some of the indicators and some of us were like oh yeah we always do that and others are like no we don't what are you talking about I don't think that I don't so that we only got through two of the six principles during that three hour time period so that's for a conversation we also had the instructional empowerment um report there so for when we'd get to an indicator and we wouldn't necessarily agree we would be like well it said in this that we're doing this that this is what they observed was that a one-time thing or is that a trend that we probably do have on campus so it was a great and then Kevin was a great asset to the team he was very quiet and let us talk until we would kind of say something and he'd be like or maybe you need to look at this direction so I think did we really see that and I'm like okay what's your data to prove that it was our deal breaker okay so that was helpful to have him there next one um as a cohort gosh I can't talk sorry we completed the CNA I put all the results in there and we chose I picked out all of our lowest scores so anything that was below a one so I think the highest is a three um I pulled all of that and I gave it brought it to our actual leadership meeting the next leadership meeting we had and we talked about it as a leadership team out of I believe there was like 10 that were below one out of these ten what are our top three what do we need to work on what do you guys see as something we need to work on and that's when we came up with these three indicators um I won't read them word for word but indicator 1.1 is basically vision statements what what's our expectation what's our vision for our school well we don't have a vision statement so how can we have a vision and a solid expectation for our students in our school when we don't have one so that was something that we had had good discussions about that's probably something we can work on next year is building our vision for what we want our school to be and to look like um indicator 2.3 instruction she beats herself up on this one and it's not you know just on her or any of that but we really want our teachers to intentionally be planning okay our students are not hitting these goals what do we need to be doing why are we not hitting them and I think we've started that this year with our Gap analysis and things like that but we definitely want to keep digging next year and make that a bigger part of our plan and the last one is technically one we've already been working on this year but we want to expand it even more creating those positive and collaborative relationships with our families we've been doing a pretty solid job this year but we want to expand that with our community and build in and bring in more families and more community members so that's another one that we're going to continue to work on for next year but expand foreign and our next steps um so next week we are going to be meeting or they're going to be coming on campus again and doing more rigger walks so we're going to be walking around with Kevin again so that he can see any changes that might have made maybe something different they didn't see the first time since it was just one day and then the next day we will be meeting at Desert Valley and working on our Fishbones so we're excited for that we already have staff looking at what's going on what do we need to be working they're already looking at the indicators we have about 20 staff that actually are coming and we're excited for that we're excited for Fishbones huh wow that's well that's exciting we were telling me and Cochran are like have like because they're like oh we need like five to seven members for each one and we're like you don't have that many staff like oh my gosh but the Elena majority of them volunteer that's awesome so a lot of our new teachers I think this will be eye-opening for them too so should be a good day Tammy would you explain for those who might not know what fish bones are would you explain Fishbones please in a nutshell um our fish bones are we are looking for our root cause what is the main cause to some of these problems that we're seeing on campus why are we scoring these things low so for example last year we looked at our families and collaborating with our families and we were doing family nights every once in a while you know trying to contact families you know we hear it a lot no one even answers no one even shows up no one does any of that well how do we change that and we were lucky enough last year with our 21st century money to um to do a cohort and forgetting his name but um it was like a family engagement Constantino yes and we did it for about five six months we read through a book we did a monthly virtual meetings with him and about a thousand other people but and we learned about family engagement yeah so that was a huge one for us and this year we do monthly family things and so basically the fish bone started going off topic our Fishbones is finding what's that root cause why are we not meeting where we need to meet and then from there figuring out how we can work with our sped how we can work with our El kids and better help them in our schools and it's shaped like a fish and it is shaped like a fish yeah so yeah okay yeah so that's where you would put in like you know School climate lack of what does that one say lack of connectedness health of student family changes academic issues and then why do these lead to that and then so we're trying to get to the root cause the root cause is chronic absenteeism so it's kind of a way to dig a little deeper and find the whys they look so easy but you know worse they're volunteering that's awesome we're automatically like no we're just the problem now we're not going straight to the you know why pretty tough because we're teachers and we automatically want to find Solutions but we have to focus on what are the problems and what's the why yes and that's the piece they'll be doing next Friday all of the teams will be at Desert Valley and uh have a group meeting at the beginning and then separating into their groups to do those Jen's been trying to figure out how to do how many fishbone charts 15 fishbone charts and so they'll work on them and then they'll bring them all back to the cafeteria and be able to see what you know whatever team has been working on so it's step two right and we get to do seven total because of our TSI oh yeah so that's kind of been our experience so far any other questions yeah if you communicated with any of the other schools do they have the same experience you did so we didn't talk about it a little bit in our leadership meeting and we kind of came to the same conclusions we all felt very validated in what we've already been seeing and sometimes as admin it's hard to be that person that's like Hey we're not doing this right we're not and it's like I'm just trying to do I don't have time and we're always the ones harping on them but sometimes it's good for other people to kind of see you know for our teachers like oh this is what's been noticed in classrooms and so that kind of has helped too but I think all of us principals and APS really felt like this was a good experience for our staff to really kind of start identifying some of those things that we need to work on and instructional empowerment came together for as a district and came and found some common Trends across all the sites and put a report together that Dr Stewart has shared with us as well as a notice it's on the agenda tonight um and so it to find those kind of Trends yes each site has their own areas of improvement but some common Trends amongst all right well thank you ladies thank you very much thank you very much thank you nice job thanks very nice job thank you very informative item 1.4 Title One Community input I think Mrs yeah Mr slot's going to do this and tag on a couple of other informational things for it too so yeah thank you a lot all at once okay so we are required by Title One to do an annual Title One meeting and usually that's to gain support from the community as you know on our action plan for the district traditionally unfortunately we don't really have a lot of community members that that come to these meetings even though we advertise them um the first year that I was in this position we had one family come and they I had begged them to come because they were my previous PTA parents um so and we did it together with Colorado River High School because geraline was still in the office and then the second year we were shut down so we ended up using our Esser meetings that we had to have Community meetings to decide what to do with us or money so we had that and then last year we advertised then I didn't have anybody come so so at least I have you so so our agenda for this is just kind of the overview of Title 1 and what the purpose is um I'll go over the process of improvement again I know Tammy went over it but um I'll review that a little bit um the family and Community engagement and then just a couple other things that were required to go over as well so for the overview and purpose um so being a title one school means that we have at least 40 percent of our students who qualify for free or reduced lunch so in our district all of our schools are at 98 except for Fox Creek and they're at 80 percent so the higher the percentage the more money we get even though we do have free and lunch and breakfast for all of our students we are still required to do the lunch forms it's a much simpler lunch form than than you would have to do otherwise and so we do have to document that and then it's pulled out of synergy to the state and that's how they determine our money every year um let's see we are required by title one I mean the purpose of title one is to help our struggling students especially those that are at risk and being a lower income for your reduced lunch is considered at risk um Title One requires us to purchase what we need to support those students whether it's salaries materials professional developments we're required to have family engagement meetings and at least twice a year so usually we have literacy nights and we have math nights sometimes we have science nights but we have to have two academic type nights every year at each School and um and also inform our families about their rights under Essa so that's part of what tonight's about but our schools also do that on back to school night when they do their presentations and at the first sight council meeting every year so our schools also take take care of that piece for us so our Title One money is we have um 1 million five hundred eighty three thousand five hundred dollars and some change in our Title One we pay for staff salaries and benefits that that's the biggest chunk of title one we have five peras at all of our elementary schools we have a title one reading and math teacher at our blind middle and Fox Creek plus we have our instructional coaches our family liaison and part of my salary is also also paid all the title and so that's a big chunk of change um for all of those salaries our parent homeless liaison um she has two kind of two titles we pay out a title one she is our homeless liaison who helps all of our families find home homes um clothing school supplies mental health dental health shot records birth certificates anything that they need to maintain their enrollment in school and she also was just as our parent liaison so like today she went to the schools and helped translate because she does speak Spanish so that's part of her job as well is to help all of our other families um professional development um a big part of our professional development is our instructional coaches because they're at the school's job embedded they can coach in the moment and help support our teachers our after school programs and flex Fridays we do provide some funding for that at every school but more funding for Diamondback and sunrise because they don't have the 21st century Grant so it allows us to have equitability because for what one year or two years we did not have Flex Fridays for those two schools that didn't that wasn't really Equitable for the students at that school those schools so we added that into title um supplementally supplementary resources it pays for some of the bells and whistles on some of our programs like aramira which helps students read um let's see BrainPOP IXL some of those programs that we have are paid on the title and then a lot of we do spend a lot of money on Chromebook Chromebooks Promethean boards and those things are the title as well I think we're almost to the point where we have um Promethean boards in every classroom and we're almost one to one um with Chromebooks although the Chromebooks are starting to phase out and we can't update them anymore so um we're probably still gonna have to use some of that funding for Chromebooks all right so what is our process all right so every year we have to do a comprehensive needs assessment they have me spoke about that um it's it's huge um there's six different principles and lots of little indicators inside each one you have to use data you have to list which data you use to determine where your highs and your lows are at your school after that you develop or look for what your greatest needs are so that's what all the schools did on January 20th is they figured out what their three greatest needs were at their school where they would make the most impact sometimes it's not your lowest score sometimes it's the area that you could make the most impact to the most students then on the 17th we're going to have instructional empowerment back and they are going to just help us find the whys the Y's are hard and it's the part that we really do need the support in because we haven't done real well with that in the past so it's not just saying oh well we're just going to make sure all of our classrooms do small groups that's something we see very often in all of our plans if we look back and it is a good strategy but why do you need that strategy and what are you going to do in those small groups so it can't be just as simple as we're going to do small groups what are you doing how are you doing it who's going to be in those groups so it's really breaking down to the little nitty-gritties um on the 17th um instructional empowerment will have all of us in the room there's about 15 to 20 teachers per school plus the administrators and instructional coaches that schools have divided those people into three different committees so each committee is assigned to one of those three areas that the school identified as a need so then after our original our beginning session whether they're going to teach us what the protocol is that we're going to follow for the day each committee will break out into their own classroom and they'll go through looking at all the indicators that for their principal and figuring out what is the root cause why why are we not seeing Improvement in these areas they'll create that fishbone and then a little bit before lunch we'll bring them back into the cafeteria they'll walk around and look at everyone's because every school has chosen at least two similar areas to work on so it might be one school decides to do a strategy or you know about a class and if someone else has picked the same thing it might get their wheels turning a little bit too so we'll go to lunch then we'll come back and they'll further discuss is there anything we want to change um or anything we need to do and then um the three committees from each school will get together and share with each other for more feedback and things and then we'll finally come back into the cafeteria at the end of the day where Meg who is one of the leaders from instructional Parliament and I will get up and we'll talk to the the all of the teachers who are there about what trends that we're seeing across all of our schools so that's what we will be doing on the 17th and then after that um the the instructional Parliament will be will be having virtual meetings with all the leadership teams at the schools so then they'll take those fish bones and they'll start developing what their strategies and their action steps are for next year so they'll have some time just in their leadership team to develop those with instructional empowerment and then starting the beginning of the school year next year is when we Implement those plans and then we have to monitor them at least once a quarter we have to monitor those all right so then so what do we do as a district so as a district we do not have to fill out all that rubric we have to figure out what the trends and the patterns are across our schools feel that like spreadsheet so these are what we have currently um go to view resume nope Zoom well yeah you could do full but Zoom might be go to like 150 and see what that does oops The Sims and this okay it slips there you go okay so I took all of the different indicators in the schools and what their scores were and you can see we have a lot of low scores so the blue highlighted are those that were either below one so the rubric goes up to three so as an average what was below one or if they didn't have any that were below one their lowest and then you'll see on the right hand side the average is for the average for the district and I did the same thing I highlighted those that were either below one or those that were just the lowest in that area you can just kind of scroll it's a lot um so I don't expect you to read it all right now but just so you can kind of see what the process is so on the 16th so all the schools are getting together on the 17th on the 16th besides the teams that are going to be on the schools doing additional rigor walks I will have Meg here who will be helping our districts so we'll be looking at that spreadsheet some of the data that they saw as they walk through all of our schools in January with Kate as our sped director Dr Stewart Chuck for our el director I will be talking about the trends and what kind of things the districts can District can do to support our schools we also have discussions with our leadership team um like last year we just put up these are our low areas you know and I noticed that you have these action steps put in your school plan what can we do to support you as a district those are the things that will go in the district's plan for at strategies and action steps Community discussion and feedback um that is tonight that is also looking at um looking to see um what kind of input we could get as a district we're low in community involvement and we need to figure out what the disconnect is there's something that either the community needs that we're not giving or so or maybe not in the right format there's some there's some disconnect there and we need to figure that out um and then like I said we create our strategies and action steps then the reason why all of this is due on March 17th or March 24th is that not only do the schools after they have their plan done the district has to have our plan done but all of our strategies and action steps have to align to anything that we're paying for out of any of our title grants so that's Title One title two title three title four and Rural and low income so anything we're paying for from a grant has to be indicated on on either the school or the district action plan all right so I gave everyone Hobbies um this is the rubric for principle six which is the family and Community engagement piece as I said the district does not have to go through this rubric however um they're good kind of communication stop-offs you know to see if anyone has any input as to what we can do as a district to help you know the community feel more welcome at our schools or be more involved in our schools um so some of the indicators are like are the families welcome when they come in the front door do you um are you greeted do you feel like you can go to your classrooms do you feel like your voice is heard um do you have input um maybe I mean one thing we learned from covid was that a lot of our families will attend things if they're virtual so are we providing those opportunities for you so that even if you can't get here in person you can still participate from home so does a school offer um or districts offer opportunities for you to come and learn about our state standards learn about how to support your children at home those kind of things so the first step is feedback so um on what we can do to help bring our community into our schools mm-hmm and to be honest with you because that particular School is so transient the students are very transient and trying to get them when they're living in a car or they're living in a hotel or is there uh in a pay by the day and we don't have a number that to me is a huge problem do I know how to solve it um it seems to be a major problem at this point in time because these kids already been choya the parents certainly aren't there they call members to do this they're no longer um they just pick up and move and we don't even know where they don't have the time right I get the problem like you I honestly how do you how do you involve a community that it's only transient I don't know I wish I did you know because everything it was Francine also is a you know that's a growing concern we have had 17 new new identified homeless students since we came back from winter break so I mean there's possibilities there's more out there that we just don't haven't identified yet so we do know that that's the thing a big problem you know board have any ideas maybe I know most of you have worked in schools most of us have exhausted the same things that you've tried I mean you know I mean and this is a problem that's been going on for years and years I mean we've always had problems trying to get parents to come out to things and it doesn't seem I mean like you said you've tried so many different things and nothing really ever seems to to click and unfortunately you and I both food that I mean you know our our Fall Festival we would have you know the different events like that and there was always the concession stand open you know and they could get a slice of pizza you know things like that um when that kind of stuff is offered we we would get a lot of turnout the families they don't want to come though and listen to us talk about title one and all of those things right they're experiencing those fun moments with their kids which is almost just as important um in today's society you know so I think maybe if we do and if we do District a district-wide which I know would take a lot of planning I'm not volunteering but like a district-wide event so every school every parent ever came to one centralized location and we had a community school event um where we could have multiple people you know giving information at just different boobs and things like that having a game at the booth so the parents come they get to listen we give the kid a prize you know but make it like a whole thing because then we're getting our students that are related to the students at Fox Creek in a bullhead middle and so they can come to one event and not five different ones good idea well I mean that's even similar like with parent-teacher conferences going on right now you know and and you know you split time I mean I I snuck in a few minutes late because I was up at Mojave doing parent teacher conferences and and trying to get around to campus and if you've got students at multiple different campuses and or even if you have two at the same location you know that's 14 different teachers you're going to see at the high school between two kids and you know I know that when we did like Mojave palooza with the freshmen coming up you would get a good group of kids that want to come and their parents because they want to see the campus they want to see what's to offer but we I mean ROTC had cornhole out there uh FCCLA had their little something going on to promote their programs but also to entice them to come through and then after they hit all of those locations I'm overcooking food over there and just wrapping them up and giving away food as long as they have their ticket and so it was a way to because that's one of the biggest things too is food well it's dinner time yeah and do you want to take away eat later or eat junk or drive through whatever the case is or where you could go do this and then have a meal with your family like you might do at home or maybe you don't but it's guaranteed it's there it's a it's available but you know even tonight you know going to do that from 4 to 5 30 and then come to a board meeting like you know my family's eating without me so at least if we were at an event like that we could eat you know and it's just an opportunity to do something else as a family and you know and have the fun like you said so we did have one event this year at Desert Valley um I think I think Elena were you there for that anyway so um they had different Community groups from Bullhead or from the area there that helped them find different resources um you know they had Chartwells they're offering nutrition information things like that and then snacks yeah was it well attended because I think I think I drove by the parking lot and it was slammed yeah and I want to say that even like FCC like the high school came and volunteered in certain years so I think that I remember that and it was because I think I never drop my daughter off it was slammed so that's what I mean by we need to find the need because clearly that was a need like that was something that our families needed and they were interested and interested them and it was you th are healthy students then they're going to perform better um I'm just wondering that if we can't get the people to come to us why don't we go to the people let's Identify some neighborhoods and go to that neighborhood you know put a tent up or and serve some food and do some talking you know we could at least go to the people instead of having them come to us it's just another idea instead of you know because obviously having them come to us is not not not very good well and sometimes I know families have bad experiences and so the parents themselves don't always want to come back into the school for those events like something like Rotary Park or you know big Ramada and stuff have a night down there and have stuff set up because that's a good area you know for the schools the three schools that we've got right here in this area and stuff and that okay yes okay and is this even something we could put a survey out on our you know social media and say hey parents what would bring you in you know yeah what was that sorry oh I just said is it something that we could put out in our social media and just be like hey parents what would bring you to the school like you know besides the I mean I'm not talking about like you know but like hey what would be interesting for you to come and spend some time at the school with your family you know and also learn about it yes and we will do that again we every year in the in the spring we are required to do parent surveys and we stopped doing the old-fashioned surveys that we've done for years and we started having a team put together what do we need to promote what do we need to know about our families um so we kind of got rid of those old ones and did new questions but honestly we had probably 49 to 50 parents at each School answer so when you're considering basically 400 500 kids 10 and you get 50 answers per school it's kind of hard but it's it is it is Data so I mean it's that's the better than 10.

so okay I don't I don't feel that will be an issue right and and the ones that we're going to retire yes what is what's the rate on those those I um Brian I talked to Brian from Stiefel this morning those are about 4.86 on average and when we refinance them because they're going to be a shorter term we're looking at the low three threes so it's a different it's a different part right different part so yeah the what we're we're replacing he said mid High fours he said 4.86 actually and um he anticipates low threes okay and the 35 million that's a 20-year maturity most of them are 30 or 30 years or 20 year however some of them um if you buy furniture and equipment needs to be paid off within the first five years so some of that that I think it's eight million it's I think it's eight million dollars of it is going to be paid off in the first five okay thank you foreign next item is J2 discussion approval of 2024 2025 Academic School calendar Dr Dunlop yes thank you president Lopez vice president Holt board members Dr Streeter members of the community and bringing forward from the calendar committee uh the attached calendar for the 2024-2025 school year this calendar maintains some of the highlights that our community voted on the last time that we did a survey kind of those highlights would be keeping the two semesters as equal in length as possible same number of days beginning the fall break on the Monday on which Columbus Day is celebrated scheduling winter break to include two full weeks and three weekends people don't like the broken up weeks ensuring that the school year is completed prior to Memorial Day and including the Wednesday of Thanksgiving week as part of the Thanksgiving break and of course approving the calendar at this time allows families and employees to plan far ahead for vacations and special events by this time we are already getting calls about the calendar a year from now I'm happy to answer any questions that you might have I moved to the governing board to prove that 2024-2025 school calendar I have a quick question so looking at this your October fall break changed right it went a week later yes originally okay well not necessarily then originally it always it always moves to the to the week that starts with Columbus Day so it just happens that Columbus Day is the second Monday in this particular year that falls as late as it possibly can yeah okay thank you you're welcome does anybody else have questions yeah so so with the publication of a calendar once again we we you know raise the Specter from the 2019 survey right and the uh two half days in October and March so um I kind of thought that we were gonna address that with this calendar the 24th you know the 24 25 but we can't we're not so can we I don't know get a committee together we can't we can't change that the way that we had voted on because when covet hit Governor Ducey did executive orders that we couldn't ever go lower than the number of calendar days that we had the year before right let me go ahead yes yeah there's yeah there's more to it but so if I if I'm hearing you're asking for us to convene I mean role proof 24 25 being a committee right to re-survey uh parents because the last survey is done in 2019 so you know 2023 years have passed it's time to to go back out to the community and see if those priorities are so I think there was what I'm hearing is the request and probably I think that Ford would agree the direction you know board would be to reconvene a calendar committee next fall to set maybe a three-year calendar cycle right is that accurate it is yeah well it's like Dr Delmer said I mean is that the way it was still in effect yes so the only way to fix that would be to go back and and like play with when you start the beginning of the year I had more days at the beginning that then might mean adding more work days for teachers and then that would be a an issue so because half days count as a regular school day so what we would have what we would have been doing that spring when we adopted that calendar when we put that on the survey we would have been going to 176 calendar days right and we're no longer allowed to go lower than 178.

so that's kind of our starting point so we wanted our staff to look at you know where are you at thinking back to 2020 and then we gave them the end goal and our end goal is and what Jennings County's end goal is is to you know have teachers fully integrating all six of these things into their curriculum simultaneously toward whenever you walk into a classroom you can't tell if it's math science reading right they're all just connected together and so whenever we looked at this Continuum because you know the end goal is always an end goal because there's always going to be more there's always going to be other things that we're going to be doing to strive to get there and so we took this to our teachers and we wanted to know because they weren't for sure where what direction we were going in well then we kind of took a step back and we're like okay do you where are you at just in general you know not even really looking at this end goal but where are you at with these things in your classroom because you know we've all had the training on them but we found that a lot of these things or some of these things weren't making it to the classroom the best way that the teacher wanted it to happen so over the the course of the week the the teachers filled this out and if you would like to fill it out I would encourage you to do so and so that way you can kind of see what the teachers were going through and it's really just kind of putting yourself on these sunshine rays because our goal is to get to the sunshine and we try to have symbolism in sixth grade that's one of our standards that we teach is you know symbolic meaning and so um you know we want our teachers to reach that sun we want them to get there and so we put all these different six initiatives on a ray of sunshine and how do we get there and so the data that we found um if you we kind of thought of it as like um like a grade so like if you were at a four out of four you know you're 100 confident in the training in what you're doing you're good to go and of course the four isn't quite at the sun because there's always room for improvement um you know that three is that you know 75 C kind of average two would be a fifty percent one would be that 25 so whenever we actually receive the data back this is what we found and each Ray has 16 um a total of 16 votes and what we did is we put everybody that where everybody's Mark was I I tallied them up and put them there so on the technology with iPads and computers and that number one spot there was one person that had a vote there and then on the number two spot there were four people who were at like a two so that's kind of how we got those numbers so and whenever I was looking at this it kind of surprised me to be completely honest with you because as I was looking I noticed that the majority of our staff ranked themselves at a three or lower and each of these six categories which surprised me because we've all had training in all of them other than udl and so me that was kind of a red flag that was kind of wait a minute something seems off to me because I would think that you know I would rate myself higher than a 75 percent if I've had this training so then that led me to dig a little bit further so as I was digging and as I was talking to our staff and trying to understand where these why they felt this way as I've realized it's not the training you know central office is doing a great job in providing us training and providing us you know these opportunities to have people come in house and you know train us on these things what we're lacking is that implementation piece you know we get the training but then how do we apply it to our students you know I know I'm trained in project-based learning but how do I apply that and differentiate it to 17 different kids this year and then and so that's what I found and that's what we're lacking and so Mr Hunt and I we we've actually we met this morning and we're going to meet again next week to figure out okay now how do we differentiate you know for those people who are at ones and twos you know how do I differentiate from one teacher to another teacher I differentiate my classroom every single day you know I'm required to and that's that's the way kids are going to learn the best and teachers aren't any different and so our goal is to you know we differentiate for our students we also need to differentiate for our staff so our next step is to figure out on our ones and where our ones and twos and things like that are and then go directly to them and have that private conversation or just that open conversation of how can I assist you what resources do you need what supports do you need and so we already have since computer science is our Focus we already have some things in motion that we're going to be working on between now and May and then that way come August we are going to be able to hit the ground running with every single classroom in our school going at the same pace and the same differentiation for each class to where by the time they've started this this computer science and code.org and in kindergarten by the time they get to me in sixth grade they will have all the necessary um background work and background knowledge done to where we're all working together we're all working at the same pace and on the same page but we have to do that through differentiation and so our goal this year in the summer is to be able to provide that to our staff to make sure that we have confident teachers and so what what you'll see just very quickly I'll end this up what I see as an administrator with this is a couple of things one I was so proud that our our staff was vulnerable you know we made sure we introduced this I made sure this is not an evaluative thing I in fact I really want to know your weaknesses why because that's where we got to improve I mean I I'm tired of always assuming route and we're not going to assume let's see where we are let's truly look at data and not make it mean what we want it to be but really what is it showing us and then let's do something with it so when Courtney came with me with this no right here this is going to make me look really good no it's going to make our staff really good and they trust each other enough that we I think take that as it's so cliche from good to great and this is our way I really want to get us to not just a stem certified school but a true grade school because the next goal that is coming out of Courtney's only one who knows is we're going to start looking at the you know the Blue Ribbon the bullets are we want to go and take this thing another step so Feathering your guys's cap too when I was when I was trying to figure out because I try to be you know somewhat prepared and and I I couldn't figure out how I wanted to when it's so in every presentation the only thing I could think of was this past week I had a student because even though we have these holes and we have this lack of Confidence from some of our teachers there was a sixth grade student she had been absent so she sent an email it was you know wanted her work and so sent the work to her didn't really tell her anything about it but just sent it to her so she could see it I email back and the only question she had was is this stem and I I sent back to her why do you ask if it's stem and she said well there's a science assignment there's a reading assignment and there's a writing assignment and they all connect and I just assumed that there was going to be a stem project at the end of it and so it's working the things that we're doing from the ground up from kindergarten up are working we're getting away from that departmentalization where everything is separate and we're finally getting to where it's it's combined and you're not going to see that on a test score you're not going to see that on an assessment but just that email let me know that our staff is doing it and they're doing it really really well and I'm very proud of them and I hope that you hope that you well thank you guys both of you for coming to the board meeting tonight presenting to us congratulations on advancing to a site visit that is super exciting one of the things you know in healthcare when we have people coming into our home um one of the things that we always like to do is hear what they have to say because you're growing and you're improving any information or little tidbits of you know things here you're doing well you're maybe need to improve it always gives you an opportunity to grow so that's fantastic so congratulations on them absolutely does anyone else have anything to add okay we'll move on to down under support staff it will not you know it'll it'll it'll be flattened and smooth where the temporary lot was but it won't be pretty necessarily this particular spot so I wanted to walk you through the timeline and the site work the leadership is very important to take a look at the leadership structure of how we're going to have Candlewood Lake set up there was talk of one principle there was Taco could we have two principles in the upper and the lower house how are we going to do this uh quite a long time ago we made a decision um as an administrative team and as a board that we're going to have a one principal model DR pepsoski is going to be our principal and you will see that our assistant principals will be Dr rudel and Mrs Gordon and that would be Dr rudel in the upper house and in the lower house would be Mrs Gordon our special education supervisor Mrs ricitelli would be in housed at the elementary school because she's the special education supervisor for elementary and as you can see oops excuse me Bob fast on my clicker there yeah over here our director of instruction Mrs Furious is actually returning to the director of instruction next year and will be housed at the elementary school and we're really looking forward to her leadership there Mrs Ferry has stepped in for us this year as the principal of Center school and it's important to note that when we transition to the elementary school the new elementary school and the consolidation the Center School principal position is eliminated there's that so that's a savings in next year's budget and with Mrs ferries acting as the principal this year we've realized the savings from the existing director of instruction position we didn't backfill that this year with a substitute or anything like that which leads us into right-sizing the middle school at the middle school the leadership structure is changing as I said Mrs Gordon who's our current assistant principal at the middle school she works with fifth and sixth graders total of 400 students she'll be moving on to the elementary school and that um that vacates an administrative uh role at the middle school and like I said she works with 400 students but will only be 200 students less at the middle school so there's still going to be 600 kids at Whiskey near Mr uh Brenda and Mr bedner will still be there as Administration and one of the things we're doing is a budget neutral um change where we're going to bring in a teacher leader position a dean of students not only for safe and orderly environment work but also student engagement family engagement and the like in terms of having enough adults to properly supervise and keep a safe learning environment so we're really excited about that as well so that's Candlewood Lake is high level with a little bit of detail for you to work you through the other major thing we have going on that affects all of our students is the healthy school start times initiative when we really embarked I think it was about three years ago now and we put the committee together we really wanted to look at this from a healthy perspective not just a uh either trying to figure out how we do something different with buses and times it was really looking at adolescence and health that was the most important thing to us and the thing we we all found and actually through surveys of students and families and uh High School teachers really the consensus was the kids are really tired at the start of school our high school starts at 7 15 now so the kids have to get up quite quite early and and staff has to get here quite early to have a start time sharp at 7 15.

I am currently a junior at Sacramento State majoring in child development Maestra Diaz was my sixth and 8th grade teacher but I had her a couple times before when she was substituted Maestra Diaz was the person who inspired the young woman I am today she was the reason I decided I wanted to become a teacher when I was in sixth grade I was assigned to write an essay and my EST ideas used it to submit it to a writing competition where I was chosen as one of the finalists maested ideas is truly the reason I am who I am today I would reach out to her in high school so that she would read my assignments because I valued her feedback a couple years later I made my confirmation and chose my it's ideas to be my godmother I can confidently say that I would not be where I am today without her courage love and continuous support my stud ideas if you're hearing this I love you and I support you a hundred percent our next speaker is Ximena Rocha Ximena please unmute yourself the timer will begin when you begin speaking good evening Alum Rock distinguished board members and superintendent Bauer my name is Ximena Rocha and I am here to speak on my experience as an alumni of Adelante dual Language Academy I speak to you all today as a third year college student in the process of attaining my certification for teaching and I owe a large part of my achievements to the teachers at Adelante teachers like maestradias who provide their students with the tools to succeed in all their future endeavors and who have provided me with an outstanding example of what great teaching actually looks like I firmly believe that Adelante teachers deserve to be treated with the utmost respect not only by their students but by the entire District board because a lack of support for teachers directly translates into a disservice to the students I proudly stand with Adelante teachers and I can only hope that when I officially join the profession I am allotted the same respect for my superiors as I hold towards the amazing Educators that help shape the person I am today thank you our next speaker is Danielle Banderas Danielle please unmute yourself the timer will begin when you begin speaking hi my name is Danielle um and I am a teacher at Lindale Elementary for 22 years and from what I'm hearing board members and Dr Bauer that teachers in this District are undervalued and underappreciated and I just would like to say that moving into bargaining which starts Monday it's all about attracting and retaining teachers we need to start there first there is a sub shortage and we can't be having teachers during their preps filling those spots also board members and Dr Bauer it's not right that we are still in the bottom third in the county as far as salary goes and just to throw out a couple numbers our starting salary in Alum Rock is around 64 000 which is you know common knowledge and the county average is around 67 000.

he also served two terms on the board of education for the for the Anaheim City School District at the time Anaheim City now Anaheim elementary Dr Moreno currently serves as president of Los Amigos of Orange County a 44 year old Grassroots group that meets weekly to help people through the most difficult of situations Los Amigos is also one of auhsd auhsd's educational partners that sits on the Community Schools steering committee Dr Moreno is also a father of four beautiful intelligent young women with the with the three older girls haven't attended all actually all of his girls haven't attended Sycamore Junior High in Anaheim high school three of them currently um in college and one currently attending Anaheim High School Dr Moreno is here to support us in contextualizing our data he will push our thinking and encourage dialogue and inquiry that will help guide our conversations ask the right questions and sometimes ask difficult questions of our data as we go through the lcap process so a warm welcome to Dr Jose Moreno thank you all right when I noticed I don't think I've ever been this nervous for reals too many familiar people that know what what did you just say what'd you say how are you I have almost how many of you are feeling stressed how many of you feel stressed at this point wherever your life is you're feeling stressed so I asked this a student to Cal State Long Beach and I'll tell you it's a trip the first day of classes I asked students that and all hands go up and I asked them what are you stressed about school first day of school what are you stressed about what's going to happen okay but you don't know what's going to happen yet what are you stressed about what happened last time what happened last time so the the the the learning that is really difficult for us is an education systems is how to remember to be human how to remember to reclaim and sustain our Humanity which is why I'm proud to be an auhsd dad because that's what we're talking about we're talking about how do we work best together to sustain one another as people as youth in our roles as parents in our roles as teachers who are also parents in our roles classified who are also residents and parents and our roles as Leaders presumably to share voices and express concerns and hope to others I'd be remiss however if I didn't just start this conversation for me with you with a land acknowledgment that Anaheim is built on the ancestral land of the Gabrielino and the tongva people the indigenous people of the region and we are appreciative of their stewardship and their caretaking of this land to whom we owe much to and too much to whom we must restore the ethics by which they took care of this land and its people [Applause] um yeah let's let's go let's go um all right there is it a presentation remote is it on presentation mode all right well uh is it PDF ah ah okay who is that right who doesn't know who doesn't speak Spanish and knows who he is all right here's what I'm curious about those of you who stand up if you don't speak Spanish [Applause] all right I need I need one volunteer I need I need one volunteer somebody tell me how do you say his name no really San Benito so is it bad bunny is it bad bunny is it about boonie right or as we've come to know him and love him in my household right the Bad Bunny uh if we could go to the next slide so we're all VIPs right and so I have a question for you all and actually that's what I was hoping with some of the slides is the Grammys here's the most controversial question happening at Cal State Long Beach Chicago Studies classes this week was Bad Bunny robbed should it have been Beyonce raise your hand it should have been Beyonce Queen B raise your hand if it should have been Bad Bunny raise your hand if you're like yeah Harry Styles I feel you all right all right uh go to the next slide so so the thing that I've been asked to share with you and talk with you a little about through the multiple experiences and hats that I've had a chance to wear continue to try to wear uh is is a Perpetual idea that we push at the University that you're pushing that we're pushing one another here at auhsd that the elementary districts are pushing if we're doing good education and that is critical inquiry is how do you know how do you know what you know how do we know what we know so if you believe that Beyonce should have got the Grammy and deserved it based on what how do you know she was the top person Harry Styles how do we know Bad Bunny how do we know how do we know how to say his name how do we say his name who's correct right and how do we decide that so how do we decide and that's the critical element of what the lcap means and I just want to remind you all well I love the district and for those of you who reap Paulo Freddy those of you who've taken some good courses at education he talks about the idea of false generosity and what happens in systems that have been built unfortunately on waves of marginality that is for a few that what happens is when those systems are then asked to turn around and serve those who didn't serve it often does so in a very select and Marginal Way where if you don't become like them then you don't get served prove yourself that you're like us and that we serve you it's an assimilation this policy not simply cultural racial but assimilation is to integrating to us and auhsd is now saying we're here to serve you you're not here to serve us powerful powerful sentiment to change but how do we know that that's true and that's why the lcap is so important and while the district is saying come join us and we'll give you tacos we'll give you Tacos No Other District does that I think they serve like packaged food right if they serve at all and they tell you they invite you and follow Freddy reminds us and cautions us be careful system leaders that you don't turn into false generosity that you're only inviting people to share with you what they think when you've already decided what you want to do so the beauty of what the state of California has done for us our legislators is they said and this lcap we're going to recognize that some districts because of your context of your cities and your region and your history have more struggle with certain systems we're going to provide more resources but for you to get those resources we need to know how you're going to use them and you're going to use a community process and you're required to involve parents you're required to involve teachers so by law you're here by law I say that again not because auhsd doesn't want to do it but there's one thing to do it because it's by law as other districts do it we often call it malicious compliance they just do it because they have to and then there's districts like ours who are embracing it saying come challenge us do you be you let us know what we need to be doing and that's our task and our responsibility to do as people because then later when things don't play out the way we like it we didn't participate what can we do there's a process for this work so if we go to the next slide so I'm going to share with you something happened in another District some of you have uh that are in our schools have taken your students to Cal State Long Beach with me to visit me in classrooms at Cal State Long Beach it's pretty cool how many of you have done that any teachers in here counselors have done that a few a few of you it's pretty cool they come and they sit in class so another District came they brought over 100 students and over 50 staff members and asked me to go and walk them into the campus and say look Latinos can do it too and they smile right and be a role model so I started to talk with these students in these communities and I started showing them data which was not expected because in that we were doing some research on that District so you won't really be able to see it from where you are but what I decided to do is what we call intersectional data and some people will try to scare you about that term intersectionality is we looked at they knew they had racial ethnic gaps on a through G completions they knew that the question was was it because there's some racial stuff happening in the district or as most people said it's because of class it's because we have so many poor students and poor families in this area that it's class so we disaggregated the data in this intersectional way and I showed it to that community of folks from that District 100 students 50 staff members counselors principals a couple of Trustees and I showed them look I'll just show you really quick all students at the very left 24 of students who have free reduced lunch in that District completed a through G 37 percent of kids who are not on free reduced lunch so neither is doing well but there's a gap and then by race we look at African-American students 22 percent of students completed a through G who were not free and reduced lunch and about 16 15 percent who were so I showed them this data and I asked them why do you think this is why do we see these gaps across racial groups and then within racial groups class it's not just race it's not just class there's a mix because when you look African-American students 22 percent who are not on pre-induced lunch completing a through G that is actually lower than white students who are poor and are free reduced lunch why would that be if poor white students are doing better on a through G than African-American students why would that be it was an accusatory it's an inquiry why would we see that because if we don't ask why we can't attack it we can't discuss it and dialogue in it so I shared this and immediately what do you think happens when you share data with District people and teachers and others in the room what do you think the students did this is a hard space to ask questions um somebody just yell it out what do you think the students did they're like sitting there they're just like yeah that's what they were doing I said they were doing until I said hey man why is it black kids are like this all of a sudden they're like what hey how come white kids are like this all of a sudden they start waking up you start naming it they start waking up oh what's going on it's going to get crazy in here it's gonna get crazy they want to see something and when I would do that the teachers the principals and the councils would get a little nervous like we don't talk about Bruno here we don't talk about Bruto you know what I mean so so I said well the the teachers get up the counselors get up a few of them and the administrators they say well that's because in our city we're highly segregated our school system is highly segregated so what you're seeing in this data is the impact of segregation in our city so it's not that the school district is doing this or doesn't care it's that certain schools are in a more difficult part of town in other districts other schools in a different part of town so we're a segregated District that's that's the problem here oh so I showed them the next slide which was an actual school that actually had a critical mass of all these different racial groups we saw the same thing in fact it was worse it was worse 70 percent 69 percent of white students not a free register lunch complete the a through G 39 percent of Latino students not on free reduced lunch complete a3g a 40 Gap at the same school to say how do we explain that that teachers encounters just kind of were like oh um then we're just did I just snore I'm sorry so right so they just kind of like um yeah I think it's time to go we're supposed to have a tour right now we got to go the kids wake up and they're like oh Mister we could tell you why oh do tell why is this because there's a program at that school and it's a program that's specifically targets honors and AP students and they get all of the curriculum that they need for college they get all the counts they need for college really and then this Filipino kid jumps up and says and they're all white really yeah well you know sometimes you see two white folks you've seen 10.
