Please stand and join me in the pledge of allegiance. I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. And Miss Rof, would you please read our mission statement? Our mission is to empower each student to positively impact the world for a bright new future. Okay, Cheryl, do we have any public comment? Okay. Um, are there any board updates? Okay. My first is the weekly activity report we get. I'm just wondering if there's a way to give us a little synopsis because um they put things like family night on there and I'm guessing that means yeah I'm guessing that means the families are coming to meet the teacher whatever when in essence it's a fun event and I was actually asked why nobody from the board showed up.

appreciate their witness to help hop in and help lastly I wanted to pass along that we received numerous compliments for our tournament we were told by parents coaches and teams that this was by far the best tournament they had been to this this year they are looking forward to our tournament next year we actually ended our tournament 40 minutes early after starting three minutes late this canoami contributed to a wonderful volunteers we have one thing I wanted to mention that she didn't put in here was Amber bressman the teacher the coach for her endless hours she spent pulling that off because there was a lot going on after the basketball game on Friday night it spent pretty late even our Tech some of our tech people were there late into Friday night to be prepared and be there around I think 6 a.m Saturday morning to get everything prepared for all those teams so it was a lot of fun to see all the collaboration that happens with those and you know Mrs Lamborghinis too I think I have shared all those so I I appreciate the time to be able to share the recognitions thanks Mike give me a public comment on agenda items this evening in the public if not I'm going to group your approval of minutes both the board of Finance meetings and the regular meeting on the 24th of January together if I have a motion to approve someone all in favor all right first approval of a financial reports we'll first look at claims a lot of money for foreign so we've been in the process of replacing our overhead projectors with televisions and so this actually completes that process um which we had some rooms at both of our high schools that still were without TVs and so those are commercial TVs they're not like the TVs that you would buy at a store or anything like that so they have a little bit more lasting power than a normal TV does but it seemed to work well for us thank you we have a motion for approval claims general questions all in favor of that say aye aye payroll nothing out of the ordinary for payroll um we'll probably start seeing some uh ECA like coaches pay and that type of stuff start creeping in um these next few payrolls as winter seasons in the barrel motion on second all in favor Personnel HR I'm glad can I go over uh just one last step with financial assignments into the month balances so this will be the first uh in the month for 2023 so Mr Porter just so you can kind of be aware um it lists out all of our funds that that we have it gives us the beginning balance that First Column is the beginning balance for the year for 2023 so that will always stay the same and then the next column is the beginning balance for just that month period so this one represents January then it will give you the activity uh fiscal year to date uh plus or minus the paint on it there was gains or losses and then the next column is the monthly activity for just that specific month plus and minuses and then your ending balance at the end of that month um and so you will see some balances in there that are in the that have minuses or negatives those are typically Grant funds and so how Grant funds work is that we pay that money up front and then we have to claim reimbursement for that Grant and so that's why you'll see a lot of those numbers as you get lower on the list than the negatives because those are usually Grant funds but we'll take a look at that every month uh and then um the next board meeting we will uh take a little more specific look into cash flows for our education operation funds but that's all I wanted to present with that nothing out of the ordinary when it comes to our balances right now so yeah I personally kind of like to watch the expenditures out the Geo bonds and see how that's trending more of it all right 2016 was about finished those are all encumbered and so that that will probably that'll probably be off the book for the next board meeting as we get some invoices but yeah thanks Chris it looks good HR we have under resignation of Kelly Beaver bus driver on the North Tiffany riverholtz paraprofessional at southford elementary Carrie Hamel good wrestling coach at Southwood High School employment Ben nessler teacher of whites High School Randy Collins paraprofessional Salford Elementary David Keith Allen bus driver at the North Rock size love Varsity tennis coach Stafford High School Jared Brooks volunteer wrestling coach Northfield High School calendar Dawes Head Golf coach at Northfield High School Trey Cole assistant golf coach Northfield high school Under transfer would be Jay Wyatt transferring from whites high school as a teacher to the bridge program that's the fact that here at the beginning of this month I think that's all questions for Daniels how long has Mr Hamilton coaching uh oh my goodness um I would say a bit I saw for 11 years and I think he's gonna been there all 11 years we know that um okay that's some coaching at Northfield uh he worked at whites and then I think he also coached at whites also for a lot easier too so that's why I knew about at least 11 years so he retired as a teacher a couple years ago now and so we put it as a resignation but who knows I don't know if it's retirement resignation it's a little bit different when we talk about um you know coaches and things like that that we appreciate all the time that he's uh put in coaching a lot of different sports but you know most recently uh wrestling and I know when I was principal at whites there for a few years he was wrestling coach and doing different things in different schools so been involved with our students for a long long time yeah I was going to mention that thank you I moved to approve the HR department second everyone in favor say aye aye opposed Matt anything I do not uh if Mr if our meetings with uh if Mr Kiara speaking of something yeah we we talked a little bit uh I asked me if I would share a little bit about our meeting so the board of managers of course are the board members from each school district of the five member schools and then the five-member school superintendents are actually part of an Advisory board so we don't have any voting power but we have we advise and different things like that and the big thing is I know and I really appreciate Mr Driscoll if we have any conversations or if we need to discuss different things we will talk about those so he can ask me or I can ask Companions and things like that but the last meeting that we had it's been a week ago Friday in our Advisory Board we actually had actually a board member was there that was asking a new board member was asking her a lot of different questions but right now the big conversation is just about how we're going to do some different things with some of the things that are needed there at Heartland career center for example a new roof is needed probably within the next two or three years also some controls and also some of the HVAC system and one of the big items too is we really need more space and so we're looking at possibility of course the board will actually build on that if that's what they decide to do but maybe do an addition also but a lot of the questions are coming up now too is how it's going to be paid for it because partly career center for the many years that they've been there have not had any really major Renovations or major major things that we've had to do extra and so all of these things will cost an additional dollars that are different than what we typically they receive from the number of schools and so there are different ways of doing that number one some of uh the formula to do the do the student funding is based on our assessed valuation and since the MSD of Walbridge county has the largest assessed valuation we typically will pay but we would pay more than in a school district now I will say that North Miami they're looking at putting a huge solar field that will actually double their double their AV at some point so they'll be kind of Maybe not maybe not in the same category as us but you know closer to what we are right now so that's one way another way is to do what they call and which I don't know if MSD has ever done this before but a common school loan and common school loans are figured a little bit different number one you get those from the state and then the draw that we get from this day each month those monies are coming out directly from uh directly from the payment that we receive but the way those are figured is based on enrollment so if whoever whichever school district has the most kids and they would pay the most obviously and just down the line and so there's a lot of discussion about that but ultimately what's going to happen now is that there's going to be a facility study um I believe maybe sometime in March there'll be a facility study or a facility audit just to find out what really is needed in the building we know for sure that the roof needs to be replaced they know about the other things that I just mentioned but there might be some other things that they're looking at so those are some of the conversations that the board is going to have to to discuss and make some of those decisions about which direction to go but they really need to find out number one what is the cost of all those a little bit better estimate I mean there's some good estimates but even with the addition and then people are going to move forward with the funding um and every school district has a little bit you know different Financial situations and you just have to work to make sure that everybody can work on the same page to get that all done because Heartland is a great opportunity for our students and we need to make sure too that their facilities are in good shape and they get what they need so they just need a lot more space especially with Wabash Closing one of those where they have the IV Tech we've got some students there so that creates another shortage of places to put people in you know and it's kind of difficult working with different school districts wanting not to spend money different ways and it's pretty easy for us down there to say hell let's do it well then we have to come back and prepared and that's not as smooth the students that would be that did come in not very many present Outside The Cooperative how would they participate in pain for us you charge the students as they come up yeah are they get charged accordingly I don't know that they would be a part of this no no Capital project that's kind of my question yes how would you know okay and there aren't near as many you know students just because our number of students that are been uh applied for those different programs that they have filling up and so and Mike Huntington used to send quite a few but they're getting to the place where they have most of their own programs not all of them and of course we still get the Oak Hill students too they have actually asked us in the past and I think we are aware of that about how to join but doing it number one we don't have enough space or room anyway right now plus it would be really difficult to be able to join I think with the cost of what the value of Heartland in the ground comes there so it wouldn't be difficult I'm not saying that they better do it but I think the space issue would be the biggest situation where you have to build one even more but um so something we're going to have to tackle so I guess has there been many leaning one way or the other how the paperwork coming up to me it makes more sense the the Money Follows the kid but that's what we would prefer those districts that foreign because then they wouldn't have as much and right now the agreement says assessed value or the assess value the assessed value part is part of the agreement but when you're talking about going over and Beyond just the regular Capital project budget and that's when you have to have some of those discussions but really it only comes down to what the board of managers will agree upon so and if it is based off of all assessed values then we would be putting close to 40 percent of that bill so but we don't get 40 of the seats yeah that's the challenge yeah that's sort of important percentage well we have gone down so I'm just curious not to get too deep into this but the decision will be made by your cardboard but then it will has to come back to each individual Village yeah if it's just regular maintenance that's already in agreement but uh just like we tried to change the funding on the students a little like last year we did it once we started to change it well two of the boards proved it but three did not so we did not get to change that formula for that some didn't even take it to them because they wanted to look at some they want to look at the whole agreement and maybe look at maybe changes of the whole thing but here again you have different that it's it's it's not easy I got plenty of questions about this that's wonder who decides about the length of bonding and all that if you don't go to the common school well which is probably not likely to happen if they're taking money out of the tuition support or yeah well that's I can't see that being very critical to some corporations just for the superintendents there I mean there were a couple that said there were two that said common School two that said he'd be one that was undecided because they just didn't they knew enough to know what the series so it's kind of a up next that's the problem you know you sit around here and say well let's do that and it's hard to get everybody on the same page you know because I want superintendent's input because they know the financial stuff you know we're just gonna advisory and some board members don't think we need to pass them and just go ahead and do it I think that's very important as you pretend it's input and business managers and we appreciate you that our relationship that we can talk and do that and some of them though I appreciate them that's pretty continuous so my only other thing other than just the Heartland career center um just to say again we just appreciate the generosity of our school district and of our community in different situations that have happened you know we had um a house fire with one of our families on the south uh that people really came together with the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Department we also have a health situation with the students South and uh put something out there too for that so just really thank people for their generosity to help families out in difficult situations um so I just want to mention that and also just mentioned that there will be no school on Monday that's President's Day that's a no school day no e-learning just a regular day so just make sure people know that that's on the calendar but um you have comments here or any questions you have to make up that's last snow day that last Friday no because we don't have to make that now we have the flexibility of our 1003 flexibility waiver which allows us to use the extra minutes that we have so good question that's all I know I could say a lot more about it so Mr direct do you have something yeah I I don't know if you saw the um the social media posts that we're put together about robotics teams but I just wanted to stress to you we have now 17 robotics competition teams um it was it was fun to go work at Shark Creek because it's a it's an event I don't know if you guys have had a chance to go Kevin was there I think for grandchildren maybe for a very short time for it but he could test it there's just a ton of people there it has a very fun atmosphere 17 teens 92 students um that gets participated and I just am very proud that we get the chance to do that um and I'm here in rumbling from coaches that they want to expand even more teams so fortunately we've been having grant funding to help purchase the hardware um and we just always appreciate it really is the people having good coaches that are really put time in and get the make it fun for their kids and so um I just want to bring that up we are working with iuk we actually have a an mou that I think will be signing shortly and bring to you more officially later but we're going to partner with them to offer what is being called the Indiana College Court certificate basically what that means is these will be 30 credits that once you get them the legislature is deemed so you can transfer them anywhere in the state um and so uh we're proud to be able for that we piece together our own 30 credits without iuk but it's kind of nice having a college partner to to help us make sure we keep on top of that and so um so basically a student that makes that it's a good fit for them when they decide they want to chase those hours they can get 30 hours which is roughly a first year of college um again I think we pretty much offer it but it'll be nice to have a partner there with that and then we have annually and active in banquet and so for the new board member maybe uh you know introduction of that we invite the board members to join with us and I know most of the ball has sent you guys invitations um and we invite as speaker and to keep parity one year at Northfield the next year at Southwood so this is the Southwood year and so uh Zach Thompson who has climbed the ladder of athletic trainers pretty well uh Penn State University and done some things there he's going to come back and speak to our graduates this year and so I kind of gave a little bit of this biography there but we like to see boardrooms there if you guys can make it and finally then I went in with a science curriculum because of the snow that came on this textbook Caravan it kind of slowed down our chances to get a hold of material so we are chasing down as much as we can um and once I get some of that there I'll I'll keep you updated with that but we are in the process of getting science for our teachers curriculum stuff thank you you looked like you were running around working hard here Saturday too well there was a lot to do they I'll tell you Amber did a great job of organizing it and I don't know if you saw Mr key favor in there he got a job there he got to sit still and enjoy the camaraderie of things yeah as the program develops whether it keeps going or not and teaching needs to be paid to help the people you know really all in yes absolutely absolutely and we'll talk about that in the future yeah all right well we're going to new business this evening first items recommendation to approve 2023 2024 White's Junior Senior High School calendar which is subject to change yes something to change but there's probably won't change as much as maybe the other one just depends on legislation a lot of different things if we get the 1003 flexibility waiver or not for the next year but as you know that they do a typically a four day week so that means they're they'll start they do a non uh non-traditional in July a few days and then go ahead and start officially later on in July and then in August and they pretty much go all the way through the end of June one thing that we need to do though that the doe doesn't always recognize that but in the past we really use we went to the very maybe last day of June but they require a lot of the reports that we have to fill in um by like July 1 or the end of June so we had to back that off a little bit so there's a little deviation to some of the calendar but this is something that Michael David puts together a lot and then of course the new format that Laura langivaros does looks very very good and so I just recommend that this calendar be approved for 20 20 23 20 20 24.

um Erica you do you have that on your spreadsheets it's one of them last week it's so long it's been right so it's Oh I thought these were things Cuts left it would have been amazing so I'm just I'm just reviewing for everyone okay how we got last week's budget okay so no additional Cuts yeah panicked me a little bit I can see why um so the uh the finance committee met tonight Russell do you want to just give a quick recap of where we stand um from the finance committee standpoint sorry to put you on the spot yeah no worries the um so basically Kevin we went over uh the budget with Mr Case again we talked about potential areas of that could be cut ahead of going to the board of finance and we decided to be a budget basically flat other than fixed cost to increase I'm not basically flat a budget is bad other than fixed costs so it's our recommendation that we would be going backwards if we made any further cuts at this point what he's already put together yeah and and we we're promoting the Thrive program is something that could be very very good for um for the Board of Ed and board of financial for the town generally so we are we're going to uh showcase that is really a separate investment um by the board of Finance to approve that 300 000 which includes um help me with that again too uh poor teachers and two news four special education teachers and three parents and three para Educators so we will we will present that to the board of Finance because in their their great wisdom and it was pretty good and again I give Mr schadner a lot of credit on this tomb for a long time we've been looking for a way to keep students in uh in Camp rather than outplace them and I think this is the uh this is a great project that Barbara's put together and so it will take a little bit of investment but there is there is the opportunity that it may be a break even in year one and it certainly will be a uh a uh a big savings if not a money producer for us down the road so thrilled to have that so we're going to keep that a little bit on the side and ask the board to find so we'll take that out of the budget so that's that really takes us down to maybe 6.9 and we'll ask them if they want to make that investment and I'm sure they will because of the uh the advantages and opportunities with it so did I get that right Russell okay Joe you want to make any comments on the finance fee no no I just some guy sucked it up very well okay so uh having said that is there anybody that would like to uh give the board of Board of Education input on the Finance on the finances in the budget and we'll open it up again to the outside foreign even my first go around on the board you had done a wonderful job and you are part of the glue that keeps this Machinery running so I want to thank you for all your hard work okay uh let's move into the agenda then so the students could not be here tonight the only thing I I looked at the report that's in your packet um maybe the thing that I would highlight is uh just to remind everybody that February 20th and February 21st next Monday and Tuesday school is closed for a uh for a short uh winter recess and um other than that I would say that uh to keep on the lookout for the Seussical um play that's going to be coming up any questions on the student report that we have no okay thank you uh the PTO did provide us uh some information and uh an update and we're very fortunate that each one of the pa uh each one of our ETO has provided some uh some information on what's going on with them and a couple things we'll point out is you may remember last year the months is chocolate fundraiser at Cherrywood Primary School by the PTO that is going to start again um I think it starts this Friday and will run through three three and then I also know the schools are doing their bus uh bus driver appreciation um which you know we are very fortunate uh when the Martell bus company and the folks that are running those buses I only hear uh good things about the drivers and the way they take care of our our children so that's great um so they asked me to mention that and then other than that you see a student basketball game and you see some community outreach things this all being the consent agenda next time but I want to thank the PTO president for all the work that they do on behalf of our schools and and they're just so creative and uh making things happen in the Canton School District so any questions on the PTO reports that are in your your your packages everybody's good okay moving right along we'll go uh right to the superintendent's report Mr Casey okay thank you very much so over the past couple of weeks um as you can imagine the majority of our time has been spent um was spent uh um putting together the budget proposal in preparation for uh the presentation last week I want to let you know that um we're very excited that tomorrow night will be a parent meeting where we will be giving an overview of our Student Assistance Program to meet the health and wellness needs of our grade 7 through 12 students this is the program you approved in December we've had several meetings with staff and now we're ready to roll this out to our family so tomorrow night will be a parent meeting that we will record and make sure we post on our website the communication was sent out to parents last week and another one will go out tomorrow morning and for those parents who are listening in tonight a reminder that the parent meeting will begin at seven o'clock through zoom and the zoom link will go out to the entire Community tomorrow morning and this is a student assistance program for all 7th through 12th graders that comes at no cost to families it is it is and has been supported financially by uh this board of education to benefit our students where we hear daily across the country uh this is a a Public Health crisis adolescence uh Wellness so this program is very timely and I hope as many parents as possible can tune in tomorrow night a reminder that only students whose parents give consent can participate in the program so a parent will need to sign a consent form we're sending out the consent forms tomorrow morning with the invitation so parents will have an opportunity to take a look at that and to develop questions prior to tomorrow night's meeting so we look forward to that and uh more information will be coming out as we implement this program we'll be getting some monthly reports so we know how many students are taking advantage of the program I don't know about the Asian Pacific Islander one because I think it reads July 1 21. it does here but I I'm not sure that that's accurate I want to double check that all right Sam go ahead I think you had your hand up no I that's what I was trying to point out is the 2021 just to my knowledge I believe the Asian American was supposed to be like 25 26 and on top of that it's supposed to cover K-12 not just secondary but again I could be just a API or are you the API yeah that's strange that uh but that one would but not the others yeah and well you know they all go through the legislative process and it's [Music] um it's it's you know there's not a consistency I think that's one of the frustrating you know experiences that we have within education and uh on Boards of education so I guess it passed through the 2022 session yep I'm trying to see real quick where it's PA 1912 is that a legislative reference uh yeah Public Act 1912.

[Music] foreign [Music] [Applause] okay um as always introducing myself my new Sequoia Ramon I am a senior at the barbecue high school and I uh I am also the senior class secretary and at this moment I will be asking several questions you are all free to answer um but if you will keep your answers under a minute due to time um first question being what changes would you hope to see at the high school I think one of the things that we we contemplate here is um is um attendance we would like to see uh the schools all schools we would like to see the schools all schools uh be 90 above and above and a hundred percent would be fantastic but you know anytime anywhere between 90 and 100 percent so that's one of the things that we are always contemplating on you know trying to get students to understand that you know their education is important and they do have to be there every day I love the question I think hope is a very very beautiful word um so I I think in general what I've seen thus far it's just that you guys maintain you know the current atmosphere or environment that I feel like is brewing and then grow from it I think that's a major thing that I hope to see um as far as changing it's it's definitely an experience to be able to see where especially in this position four years ago it was a little bit different to now um I think unless it's genuinely all the Hope and Dreams that I think we have as a governing board so just that will be what I would say so much thank you one minute [Laughter] one minute um what I would like to uh what I would like to see is is that you you all continue to motivate each other and support each other and help each other when you you see something um um isn't going right and you know you can help and jump in and help that for me is really something but also I would like to see um your school that you take charge of your school meaning there are so many of you that are creative the the murals look at the murals to say that your school how you guys made the um the little um areas to rest in I think that is so cool I mean you just I think for you guys for you to understand it's your school and you have the stucco you have the ability to make those changes and to motivate your peers so that's what I want to see is Ella [Music] I also I always I'm trying to um at our meeting that we talk about attendance all the time it's very important that you attend school every day um because you can use that when you go to work you need to be on time at work and you need to be there all the time school is very important and that um when you miss a day of school you lose a day of learning and I was instilled that in my kitchen and so that's where I'm coming from and and um I mean to me um their their changes going on now that um that you are students are very active I like to see that and see all that um interaction with your school your classmates and um so just like to have that um keep it up so thank you Miss Anna the question there 100 minute response for them um I just love the energy I when I went through the PowerPoint and seeing all the different things that you had in place I want to shout out to your teacher for helping you with some of those things also just moving forward and trying to implement more um activity to get students involved and bring up the school spirit uh I think that's Association but thank you for all your hard work okay next is our next slide give me high school if so what did Phil was lacking at the high school that is still needing them you can start us off uh I kind of attended off and on but um I would have to say more classes that are college prepared ready classes I think those are things that you could work on um some of the more courses as far as like um Hands-On experienced classes or courses that could be taken um opportunities to do like internships are working with their Community I think those are huge things that could be implemented Missouri did I attend BHS I definitely did and I actually this is going to tell you how old I am I graduated in 1973.

Um today I went to the high school for the 6:30 a.m. meeting and then they had some other stuff going on and again I wouldn't have known that that was an activity that maybe they wanted the board was welcoming the Lord. So, if there's a way then instead of just listing what they're sending, I mean, I know it's hard to get in, but even if we could just give Yes, because they come in and they're uh they give me weekly uh updates and so they'll put that on there. So, we can just add family night with, you know, because I think that many of us probably don't know exactly what's involved. I don't didn't have children in this district. So, I don't know that family night means it's more like a fun atmosphere where they're playing games and they have entertainment. You know, the kids are doing things and stuff.

I said too many twenties 2023 2024. too many points motion for that I need to approve that schedule let's look at that yeah all right all in favor thank you second item recommendation to approve purchase of two yellow buses I want to explain a little bit of that career yeah right now or anything so back when we work on our budgets one of the things that we have to submit as part of that budget process is a bus replacement plan and so uh with that this is a little interesting on how things have worked out this past year because we last January of 2022 we had a recommendation and approval to purchase a couple buses our goal is to try to replace a couple buses a year uh as as we go through this so that we don't get caught up in having a year where we have to purchase eight buses or something like that which I think Mr Keith ever did in his first year because I inherited that but so with that we purchased them got the approval well because of um just everything with um supply and demand and supply chain issues we still haven't received those buses and so uh we haven't paid for them but we haven't received them yet either and so we are set they keep moving the date back but April is the next date that we've heard so we haven't received buses we purchased last year we're looking at purchasing more buses which are going to be another year away as well um but the one thing that has happened between that year or that last purchase in this purchase is that buses have went up but the cost of a bus has went up 20 percent and so we have um we go through we purchased through a co-op and so there are Co-op bids that change in the fall and the spring and so this Co-op bid is playing the change in the spring again here at the end of March and they told us that it's going to probably go up another 15 or 20 percent uh for a new bus and so we felt like it would be a good opportunity to still take advantage of a lower price even though we may be another year out but we have the buses coming from last year soon hopefully uh with that so anyway with that being said we currently have 40 buses in our Fleet uh 34 of those are yellow six of those are white uh 27 are active and we do keep spares on hand for subs and field trips and those types of things so we have 27 active and seven spares we like to keep at least six bears as a minimum and we like to replace at least 10 percent of our active Fleet so again like I mentioned we try to replace a couple buses a year with that so our recommendation would be to get those buses ordered um for um next year because that's how long it will take to get those and so we'd like to get two yellow buses for a total cost price of uh 233 940 and you can see the cost comparisons uh through the Cooperative purchase Thomas is the cheapest bus and actually Thomas is our favorite bus to work with as well so I know Kyle likes uh the mechanical side of those bosses so that would be our recommendation to approve a couple bus purchases even though we probably won't get those bus purchases until next year so that price is locked in this is your there's no yep yep we didn't have we've not had any issues with the buses we've purchased last year they said it's still going to be the same price we've we've heard rumblates from other places that have purchased buses or other things like that that you know they had to come back and pay more because it took so long classes but that those prices are locked in one of the bus replacement schedule that you gave us which I appreciate so you anticipate for blesses the year after that that's the anticipation so that doesn't mean it works out that way necessarily um so kind of so you are aware uh this reporter is that buses are kind of usually put on a 12-year cycle because after 12 years then we are required to have them inspected more frequently uh and so buses can last longer than 12 years buses can last less than 12 years just depends on the wear and tear of that bus and so the plan goes out to 12 years so when we buy a new bus then we plan to replace it in 12 years that may like I said that may be sped up for push back depending on our needs and the life of the bus to the left of it so do you guys have a depreciation in another three year depreciation five years what do you guys want to do or anything like that as far as depreciation you know you x amount of dollars per year for for those buses obviously you're paying for everything up front we pay for everything up front and we run them until they're no good yeah and especially about 99 yes I know some companies will take they'll put it on a five-year budget where they're paying x amount of dollars in five years back to themselves and there are other programs like Leasing and things like that but that would cost more longer because we've always been able to pay for us that way we run until you know if they died tell us an automatic transmissions Transmissions automatic yes they're all automatic yep how many questions do we have that are not I think we're all automatically yeah I think not this last round of buses we got rid of but it was a previous round I think that did away with our manual but our Armenian lenses [Music] and then we purchased these buses we quit uh like the first six rows with the harnesses for the preschool age kids and that type of stuff and so we all already equipped with cameras yeah and those are getting better all the time too you need a motion for it yeah we need to approval here absolutely sorry okay we have a motion a second to approve the purchase of the two buses that have been discussed all in favor all right folks all right third island new business is recommendation to approve the resolution to wave Indiana code 20-30-2-3 if you want to explain what that is yeah so maybe for Mr Porter too so let me go back two years ago two years ago our calendar would say that any day that we missed we would just go to e-learning so it'd be asynchronous learning which asynchronous just means that you can learn from any place but at any also at any time so the assignments can be pushed out uh kids didn't necessarily have to do it right then but they had a requirement to get things completed and so last year the legislator said that you can only have three asynchronous days and typically school districts would have e-learning asynchronous during PD days professional development days so there was going to be a situation so now what you do if you can only have three days and you missed maybe a total of five six seven days of school you make all those up at the end of school year what do you do well the doe then reminded that there's an Indiana code that said that you could actually waive some different Indiana codes and one of them would be this and that what that means is to waive the 180 day mandatory and you can actually use your minutes instead so last year we did this you did a very similar resolution and that's how we had our calendar this year and so originally they were saying that those waivers would last for three years but then they backed off and said it's only one year so it's applied each year so we would like to apply again for next year this waiver is very very similar except where it talks about some of the things that we're doing we added a little bit more to that within focusing on student literacy and we will have a job form which is pretty involved introdicted the majority of the work today I helped supervise in doing that work this morning but we put this together and we'll have we have a team of people that are looking at it too and we will actually apply for that if you approve the resolution because part of what the doe asks is that you approve the resolution so this is very similar to last year just a little bit of addition the dates are different um but we had asked that we do that and part of the reason why we would like to do this number one when we have our pddas if we can concentrate on having the professional development and not necessarily doing all the different things at one time so for example when teachers are trying to learn new professional development ideas instructional practices it is sometimes difficult to be able to answer all the students questions putting out the homework and doing all that at the same time plus when we have student parent-teacher conferences that is another good time that they can just concentrate on parent-teacher conferences instead of doing two things at once in the old days what happened too was that we would actually have instructional assistance paraprofessionals that actually covered classes why our teachers were doing that and that wasn't necessarily nothing against the paraprofessionals but just it was just a lot of confusion in our schools so there are a lot of schools that are doing this again if you approve this resolution then we will fill out the job form we will not know until May if it is approved or not so we'll just have to that's why the calendar may have to change or may not have to change so again if you have any questions and ask those now but I would ask that you appreciate this recommendation for this resolution all in favor thank you item of new items four five six seven and eight all deal with the approval field trips I'm going to group those all together but I'll try and read down through them recommendation to approve the out-of-state field trip from Northfield Advanced PE to Swiss Valley that's ski resort and that's February 21st recommendation approved out of country field trip for Southwood Junior Senior High School to England and you'll notice that is not until year 2025.

you know mmdt account on January 10 2023 he had nine million 466 9 10 Gene two 25. jail accept the motion discussion opposed thank you very much Gary our Consolidated cash reconciliation it was a handout given involving funds in your packet budget resources in the packet are there any questions on any of those uh documents okay Ms Martel about budget transfers please yep so the budget transfers are in your packet I broke them out by salaries and expenses so the salary journal entries are basically cleaning up all the accounts that have negative balances and I'm using [Music] some positions that were funded by Perkins reallocating to administrator positions to the correct budget line and then the rest of the revenue is coming from positions that weren't filled on the expense entries it's the same thing cleaning up all the negative balances and then fixing a couple of accounts on the credit side that when the budget was built I think the account numbers were used in error okay you have a motion please so moved second discussion yes um I understand totally why budget transfers happened I was just concerned that as much of it went into salaries as did versus program expenses or whatever so I was wondering um what that situation was that we either hadn't budgeted or we have new positions but um it seemed like a fair amount of that money was going into salaries so on the salary side so I I look at the budget I always look at it salaries and expenses so I kind of look at it as two budgets so to break it out this way is kind of just for me to keep it organized but on the salary side I like to see where the overages are and where I have savings so a lot of the savings came from two positions that were funded by a grant this year that were budgeted for but then we moved to a grant and then some of it is just reclassifying like positions that were originally on one line I've moved them to another and then there were some savings from positions that weren't filled or were filled mid-year so I'm just kind of like sweeping through those accounts and putting the money where it belongs if I'm reading this correctly on the first group of transfers into the credit side um the uh in discipline the professional salary had uh 142 000 put in that was one that caught it then same thing in the athletic department the uh was a large transfer again and so was that an additional so I reclassified um Miss Gillis when she was put into a different into an assistant principal role so I changed her account number okay so there was an overage there but a negative amount where I put her so this just corrects that and the same thing on Athletics thank you you're welcome I see here there's automotive equipment I'm imagining it's for the new part of the building but wasn't all that already budgeted there's twelve thousand dollars going into supplies which I can understand the supplies increase but automotive equipment for ten thousand six is that for the new portion of the building this little boy yeah we have I've had some requests from some of the Departments to buy some additional I can that might have been for a lift they asked to buy they asked to uh get a specific lift per to uh uh that they wanted to change one of the lifts to a different type of lift and because we had uh we felt as though we had excess money in our account this year that we couldn't move it into this year's budget so that's why you're seeing uh that added into this year's budget where you see it as a debt sort of uh transfer the money in to cover that that request anything further all those in favor aye you want to post okay Mrs Martel I believe you're still up I think it's to is it to reload the budget yeah the revoke yes okay I'm sorry yep that's fine um so with the completion of the fiscal year 22 end of the year report um I discovered that we didn't meet net School spending by about 1.6 million but we were under the five percent so um just remain compliant with Chapter 70 we need to reallocate that money to our budget this year so I'm asking to re-vote the budget at um the 39 million oh 53 523 which was our foundation budget plus an additional 1 million 616 887 which is the money that was unspent from fiscal year 22 that we need to move to fiscal year 23.

so I like to let you know as a board that uh the the series of meetings has begun for our entering kindergarten families and again for those listening at home if you've already registered your kindergartner at Cherry Brook Primary School you you have and will again be receiving this information but if you have a student who is eligible to attend kindergarten a child who will turn five years of age by December 31st 2023 please be sure to contact the school because we're really trying to um to get an accurate enrollment number uh in kindergarten for next year the students pointed out that on February 7th we had an early release professional development day and that was a a great day overall um I I can tell you that at Cherry Brook Primary School the staff spent time looking at their student intervention team process and as Mr Bishop talks about the multi-tiered system of support the acronym for that is mtss so as you hear Mr Bishop uh in his presentations this year when he talks about mtss multi-tiered systems of support we have three tiers of interventions that we do with students tier one is what the regular classroom teacher I say regular versus special education so what the general education feature does in the classroom with the strategies he or she uses to meet all needs of students that's tier one tier two intervention is when teachers pull students aside in small groups or one to one to individualize their instruction and tier three is when a student may be pulled out of the classroom for tutoring support or special education support so the staff spent time that day talking about what strategies they're using collaborating with their peers and Mr Bishop and Mrs McLean are director of people Personnel Services has been an outstanding presentation for the staff and really engage them in this discussion all in the efforts to to align with our primary goal of meeting the needs of each and every one of our students this past Thursday I had the um the opportunity and I don't know um if any of you participated also in a cave webinar webinar on effective communication practices we were fortunate that Kira joined that presentation as well and Mr Bishop was part of that as Mr Bishop in in Kira and I know Felicia work on our Communications plan for the district there were some helpful hints I thought coming out of that uh seminar that webinar and I know Kade records them so if you go to the cable website if you have an opportunity to listen it's an hour and 15 minutes I think you'll find it very meaningful one of the suggestions that the presenter made was to have Community conversations with the community about what's happening in each of the schools and I'm proud to say that's something that we've done every year those of you who have been on the board know that in the spring I like to do neighborhood coffees if um if parents are willing to invite me into their home I will go to parents homes and talk about the state of the schools before the pandemic we did that and then when the pandemic hit of course we had to do things virtually um this year I want to let everyone know that um I have a series of um of what I'm calling uh coffees with the superintendent and assistant superintendent so uh you can find these dates in my budget PowerPoint presentation but I want to go over them right now um for those of you that would be interested Tuesday February 28th from 6 30 to 7 30.

and I'm looking through and as Sam said that's uh K-12 with the AAA uh Pi studies unfortunately the bill is 50 pages long so for me to be able to find it off the top of my head uh quickly looking through it's um 1912 is 50 50 pages long the the bill with the aapi is not in 1912 the Black and Latino studies was but the uh bill with the um Asian-American Pacific Islanders as public act 22-80 so that's why I I do want to make a reference check on that and make sure that's ironed out there's so many semicolons in that sentence or that paragraph It's hard to know what the references are what what things are referencing maybe that needs to be broken out a little bit perhaps yes you know yeah now whereas is uh is this thing there right so yeah we'll uh we'll clean this one up for our next meeting but I think at the end of the day you know I can verify that aapi black and Latino Puerto Rican uh studies are all new inclusions yeah I think I think we could agree on that yeah when they are I mean the state like I said still hasn't put out anything on uh Native American or Asian American studies so when it comes to fruition your guess is as good as mine but this is but yeah I think it'd be good to know when they begin and and uh what the the depth and breadth of the uh right yeah and that'll be reviewed obviously by our curriculum committee as well yeah okay I think something something to be proud of is I think we're the first state that's moving this stuff forward you know the definitely the aapi yeah that I know Tim you got uh your hand up yes uh thank you Adam so just to be clear so that the state is going to tell us the the term or the length of each course and when it starts by requirement yes and we don't have the aapi or Native American out there okay the only thing that struck struck me as something to consider do you happen to remember I don't know if we still offered do you happen to remember the class pegs do we have it still I'm sorry did you say eggs pegs Adam's got to remember pegs pegs no I'm not familiar with that politics it was sophomore it was sophomore year social studies basically it was uh politics economics government and sociology the I'm not sure if you offer any classes right now or any courses right now that are less than a half less than a semester but it was actually broken down by quarter it might be a starting point I don't know just a thought yeah we only offer quarter uh classes in health um okay so you do it yeah the the uh it's like putting a puzzle together though you know if you it's hard to take a quarter class unless you've got something else to balance off with and right now they're balanced off with PE um so what I so what I'm not sure about the health classes but the way pegs was designed it was a full credit class it was whatever we did at that point you know five days a week called four days a week now um but it would uh yeah it was it was it was a the full period every day of the week for the entire year for one quarter each but I'm just thinking something like the aapi and the Native American studies do it as a half semester do it as each of them one quarter um if there's a teacher who's interested and you can start building up a curriculum and building up some sort of interest in the course just a thought yeah you know I'll email you at bill that references the aapi it is uh slated to begin July 1 2025.

from Bobby Curie high school and that's when Bob recovery high school was over there and so um what I what do you feel was lacking at school that is still needed well you know I've seen a lot of evolve everything evolved because when I attended barbecue high school and graduated I went to a year of college actually then raised my family then I went back to college but in the meantime I also worked for a barbecue reunified school district for 26 years so I seen that everything that we have done here at barbecue at Bob at the whole school district and the changes that we've done and I think that where we're at now I am so happy and so excited that you all are are where you guys are at now and that you're you're looking to the Future and hoping to uh I hope I wish you the best in in your success in you in succeeding in whatever it is that you want to do and I think that we continue I would like to see like the um uh College you know that it was really exciting when it was College and Career Readiness and I think we still need to continue doing that so because you know both Anna and I work at at the SEC at the college level and we want to see you there and we want to see you about and go on to college you know I know at college is it for everybody but you know I think that there's other areas that that you could explore and other students can explore foreign I think that's been pretty public that I that I also dropped out of BHS I think that there was always a lack of things that I feel like we are seeing now that I'm really very proud of what you guys are doing stepping up into those roles of leadership because I think that there's always a need for a sense of belonging which we're trying to do now as a board um by you guys supporting the house the the bubble key system is is I think a very good step in the sense of trying to bridge those things that I feel like we're missing at the time um I had a group of friends but I didn't always have the best group of friends and that's the reason why I dropped out but don't ever let anyone actually try to belittle you for that I've been belittle as much as I as much as much as I've achieved I still got my GED it just didn't do it through high school but I loved my experiences I've learned from my life and you all will continue to do that as you as you move through leadership any kind of role that you take so continue to do that just to kind of piggyback off of what this event was stating about her response earlier I think that to be able to I think the emphasis just really needs to be in the sense of who we are as people and I love that we're taking that rap now um and really achieving as a community as opposed to this individualism that we've kind of see now so that's my response I really appreciate the question thank you events um I only attended um Bobby Cambridge High School for one semester um so I wasn't I'm not really sure what was offered but I know now that I would like to see uh a lot more dual enrollment from students at the high school so that you know going on to uh get those credits and um being a tocc is just right down the road and so you could graduate with your high school diploma and have a degree if you started the um the dual enrollment um like say your freshman year but that's something that you guys could do to um to help your peers uh those of you that are the upperclassmen to encourage the younger ones to already start looking at dual enrollment Miss Ellen uh I excuse me I didn't go to school here but um my I have two girls and gradually can you pull the mic up a little bit here in high school and and I have uh seven grandchildren that graduated from there and I have great grandchildren going to school so um um it really has grown up when I moved here this had the school over here at the elementary and later on this was built and uh but there was no High School the kids going through that and move up that's hard to finally became a high school so um that's um I am um trying to get in involved with a lot um I'm just now really getting started like visiting the classroom so um I hope um and um get more into it and I just encourage other students to to like their school thank you thank you uh Aaron I think there's another what are your thoughts on the RCA houses I love the idea it was a great opportunity for us when we went to RCA and learning about what to implement it you can definitely see progress and change that's happening with students because of going to RCA I had the opportunity to go visit the intermediate school and I was blown away by the interaction that they had and the excitement that teachers had and the love of learning that students shared and while they were there um and I I was telling the group when I went to go do the visit that you're gonna see all those students who are currently in middle school and primary move up and have that and move with them to the high school and they're going to have this enthusiasm of loving to learn so I I like it I really appreciate that we have the opportunity to attend and not only did we but also us students so that you can see um I think it's a great concept and I think it adds to your learning I think it it makes you want to learn it because you're having fun doing it um it it I I enjoy watching everybody jump or I can't like jump around and you know like I used to but it's exciting to see all the kids jumping around and Reuben jumping around and and uh dancing you know I love dancing I used to get dance pretty good but I don't think I can do it anymore but I love watching people dance and and I think that's exciting so I think it's a great um addition to our school district I kind of led into this but I really truly do appreciate that Mr Diaz is out in the community now advocating for this to be sort of a communal effort because it really does provide for a sense of leadership and resp and and um connectivity even belonging for some kids and some and some parents that actually probably need some some um motivation to get involved and I think we've always trying to look at different ways to get everyone involved in education telling you to be at school is one thing but if we don't get your parents to also agree that you should be at school then we're not going to succeed as much as everyone wants everybody to be at school reality is there's there's not much motivation for school and that's not fair to say that's your job your responsibility so I really really like that we're thinking outside of the box in the sense of trying to invite other entities outside of the school to participate in the bubble key or the RCA houses because it also lets you guys see someone out there cares and someone else wants to see you succeed so that's what my thoughts are so thank you um I guess my thoughts on the RCA houses are it helps you feel a belonging to those that are in your house your families or you know and um when you think about like the um like say my house is altruismo and that's the house of givers but you know it um it kind of gives you a sense of belonging and and and you look at those qualities and those individuals that come from the different houses like I know Reuben with the hearts all the time that's so cool so he's he's shouting out there that's his house um but I I what I really think and and I was really grateful for you guys to have the opportunity to go to RCA that's what I really really makes me inspired because now you guys see what could be at the school how you could make those changes and and and how uh motivating it is for teachers to be motivated to teach you so you guys see that too now not only us as board members but but you guys are students to see that there can be a difference in in learning um fun um so I really I really like the thoughts of the houses so I I too support um uh RCA and I think it's um it's motivating our children um in the classroom you know they love to go to school but because my granddaughter likes to likes to go and do things and exercise and and that I also saw that when we did a walk through and how the students are are really using it you know when um they um jump on the chair and when doing the question answer and I like that and um so I should I fully support this thank you Mr Beats what was your reason for joining the school board and do you feel that you have made a difference one minute [Laughter] Jon parent committee and we kept hearing concerns from teachers about the way schools um things are happening in the school district and then concerns from students and so I wanted I want to change and a lot of it was making changes thinking I can come in and change everything but reality is we do have rules and so it was a Learning lesson of coming in and understanding There are rules that are in place but I do feel that we've made a difference we have made some changes and have been my third year my third year and I'm still learning I feel like if I think that first year it was definitely a learning curve and understanding the process then also just that's off to what superintendent does and also the principals and anybody who's running the school and understanding those systems that are in place I think my reason for joining the school board is I I love education I've been in education put over 50 years now and so I just I mean from going to school to working for the school district to um working for another school district and then also um being on the school board I am I this is my 20th year on the school board and so when I got on the school board at that time there was a recall on some of the board members that the year that I I got on in 2002 I think and um so I was asked to run or to put my name in and I I did and plus that I had children and grandchildren also going to school for the school district and and all the students that are attending the school district and hoping because I know that they all can they all have they all the calf the capability of being successful in whatever it is that they want to do and I wanted them to have that opportunity to be able to Express and and learn like everybody else throughout the country throughout the state throughout the United States and throughout did the world so you all have that capability and I just want to make sure that we the school district were giving you that opportunity majority of the reasoning I know for me definitely was my experiences um and the experiences that I could see from the outside uh as Anna has stated there's there's a real difference when you get on this side of the table um it's a lot of a learning a learning a learning curve by what I really do appreciate is the ability to be able to work with these fine individuals at this table and everything that they bring to it um majority of what I feel like is important especially for when we're looking at how do we achieve or put together something irregardless of all of the statues and all the laws and everything else that we have to abide by that that's that's perfect for us as a people um the Don Autumn Nation deserves education for its own Autumn and that's that's genuinely been The Stance I believe of this board and and more souls now since we've been here so I feel like that difference has definitely been very evident pushing to change the names of the schools pushing to include um a lot of that culture Heritage and going to ask the nation for for service I mean for assistance with putting that stuff into place that takes a lot of effort on the side of our support but also the work of all of these people in here that are that do know they have our support so I really really do genuinely enjoy being able to sit here uh come from where I was into you know a position that actually does have an impact on not only the community but but on yourselves as you go through the school system I wish you know someone had had that same insight as I was moving through the entire system myself so we're not we're not 100 good at it obviously there's always going to be deficiencies or things that are that are not the best but I think that we are generally doing are putting our best foot forward respect um the reason why during the school board was because I was on the Johnson O'Malley picture at the same time Anna Marie was on and I was encouraged to run for the school board because um there was a sense of um just like Anna Marie mentioned there was things going on in the school that uh people were not understanding and and because uh I was I guess people saw me as um being able to talk um loud I guess [Laughter] and and not be shy about saying what I needed to or you know bringing up things that needed to be shared so that was one of the reasons was that encouragement but I also asked my own children if that's what they thought I should do and they all encouraged me um to join the school board um you know and I think that um I I feel that I've made a difference um and I know we've made mistakes as a school board we've um and we have to um for this is my first um second term so the first four years um it was that learning just like Anna Marie said learning that there are rules and we have to abide by those as a school board but also um the feeling um for me I wanted to make sure that our um our schools are giving the education to the students that they need to be successful when they leave the school that for me was really important um and I I had I have six children uh for our graduates and two are still in school um so that really is that really is for me something is to make sure that when our when our seniors graduate that they have the potential and the you know the the strategies you know everything to make sure that wherever they go whether it's in the workforce or higher education that they know that they're supposed to be there that they feel they've made it that for me is important so um I um it was funny because um last night we went and ate and I got this um little thing here from the uh fortune cookie and it said silence the critic within I'm like I don't think this is supposed to be mine I think it belongs to one of you but like that it's it's really difficult to be in this position but I'm so glad that I am um and I do feel that I've made a difference [Music] quickly I I work for the school district for 15 years and I saw a lot of things going on and um before that I worked for an appearance and then Affairs for 25 years and I retired from there and started working here at school and um well from the beginning I had a good it was a good superintendent I really I worked under him for several years and during that time you know that he did he did some fantastic things the uh he's the one that got that um the gym the two gym the two gym uh the two geminism uh there at the high school and then later on the Fine Arts building and the feel and um that and he would then he was going to work on the swimming pool but that that we go through and then the housing went some housing there at the high school but he but he went and got hurt and had to retire and um the reason why I wanted to run was the one of the superintendent wasn't treating our employees the way the employees should be treated so I know there were a lot of teachers um that were let go and some were good teachers and but now that was my reason for running for school board so and um and I've been on there since 2014 I think so um that's my reason for going and for being in the school board thank you there is one more question um but I'm gonna ask only one board member to represent to answer the last question so we can also celebrate you like us to take back to our student body Advanced I nominate you I guess what I would like for the student body to know is that you have everything that you need to be successful everything you need to be successful you carry that with you um tell all the students that you know take care of themselves take care of their families and take care of those that take care of them because they want to see you succeed too they and and a lot of those people that want to see you succeed are sitting in this room right now and your teachers and sometimes we forget to tell them thank you thank you for um pushing me that little bit thank you for helping me and and it gets easier all the time and one of the things that really um we have to really um work at is saying you're welcome you're welcome because a lot of times we don't we don't feel that we've done whatever and by saying that you're welcome it's just acknowledging that you know that you've done good so those are some of the things that are going to help you be successful remember where you came from remember all the work that you put into and you can you can also go back into your family um Traditions culture history about how they really worked hard to get somebody worked hard to get you here where you are today and I'm talking about Generations in your family they want it there because of their hard work you're here being successful so it's not just now it's because of years and years and generations of people that want to see you succeed and and to know that you are love that's one of the most important things is that your love and people care about you and people want to see you be successful and you have to put in that work to not only are your teachers there for you to give you instruction and to help you but you have to also put in that work and those two combinations is going to get you anywhere and read read read and laugh and have fun and love thank you [Applause] good evening audience and board members my name is Uriah Lewis and I am from barbecue redistrict I am part of the student council and I am the freshman class president one of the things that we are planning that is in the planning stages is to have at the end of the a celebration at the end of the year to celebrate the end of the school year is a basketball tournament between all the house colors against uh we are planning it it's still in the planning stages but we plan to have everybody to come out and attend it to support their house colors and support every support us there will also be house color activities there and it will also be available from the primary and the intermediate and into adults to play there would be also be a different category for the adults to play cool [Applause] and um board members we will like it that if a d you will come to lunch at our campus to EXP to examine our campus and to speak with the students and to have lunch with our our students challenge accepted [Laughter] [Applause] thank you executive board officers and then these the names on the board are our senior the senior class the senior student council the president of Cecilia and some vice president Alana squirrels secretary Jesse Garcia and the children is 101.

So, um then when this happened at the high school today, I thought, oh, maybe we could figure out a way to just put a little Okay. something each activity so that if somebody's interested, they might understand them that the board might want to go. You know, somebody might want to go. That was all. Yes. My other thing is I have to put my glasses on. After the meeting, um, Mr. Hollyfield stopped me in the hall and asked me if I was going to stay for a while and I said, "Well, I usually stay say hi to people and I eat biscuit and go on my way." And then he explained to me that they were having grade level honor ropal honor roll ceremonies. And what they did was they took each level or class, senior, junior, sophomore, and fresh and they all this honoral um certificate.

recommendation to approve an overnight extended field trip for Northfield High School band High School acapella and travel requires to explore the Arts tour in Chicago that'll be in May recommendation to prove the out-of-state field trip for Northfield AP Physics chemistry and calculus classes to Cedar Point math and physics day that's also in May and finally recommendation to approve the overnight extended field trip for Northfield Key Club to District leadership convention in Indianapolis and that's at the end of this month questions on any of those let me fix that did you say let's go I am curious why the England trip why so far out well just a lot of planning um also raising funds to do that there's a lot of things so it's for the whole High School just the uh Visual and uh times uh it's it's the art program music and choir and uh there's some grades 12 7-12 I like them just shoot them on yeah and part of this is they wanted to put that out early too just to find out what the interest would be um because there's a possibility if there's no interest it won't happen but uh they wouldn't have put it out early enough to be able to get that because there's a lot to do when you have that larger organization report membership room is that what's your volunteering tonight uh no unfinished business we have board policy to be the second reading of policy number 4085 about attendance yeah and basically when we look at the review some of our handbooks and those Elementary and high school or secondary and then look at our policy board policy they did not match up and we actually had some changes in in the code so this basically just matches that up for everything so at the last meeting yeah attendance procedures yeah that should have been changed it is huh it's not we changed it if a pattern of excessive attendance develops I said they're with her and changed it she tests the wrong couple no no right there it is it's here attendance procedures the pattern of excessive attendance develops out as it was either there were two options either to phrase it as a regular attendance or excessive absence okay so it needs to say excessive absences right yeah I mean if you're going with excessive then it should be absences actually we did this just to see if you read it it worked I'm gonna take my time here to write this out so I can bring it back to you or you can express it okay I'm putting big ass break here okay so we got one out of two that's fifty percent okay if everybody understands the change there that was made to kind of take a motion absolutely exactly it was so confident about that too [Music] all in favor of approval say aye opposed we also have now the first reading of board policy 6170 so it seems like we end up receiving all kinds of policies at the Indiana Department of Education wants us to approve and so in this particular case in the last two years we have been required to do verification of student residents and a lot of that was because of our border counties having students that came over from other states and different things like that and so we have been doing this practice with our registration that you have so if you have students now I don't know if you you do the registration for your children or not or you do um Scott but uh basically that is on there right now that you we have to have some kind of proof of residency and so but one thing that we did not have in the requirement was an actual policy so we were doing this in practice but we did not have an actual policy so this policy comes directly when I talked to Indiana school boards Association they gave us a recommendation of a policy and this was not changed other than us putting it in our queue as far as a 61 170 student resident verification so again this is just the first reading I think I did put one little typo in there so you can find that right now I'm just kidding but if you find something that was on purpose really today it really was just taken from the policies that were given convenient school boards Association so if there are any questions or if you see anything between now and the next meeting just let me know and we can look at that all right any public comment online or you never have anything in common we're just admiring the ties you think they should do that every year it looks professional sorry I like to take a boat I was teasing Christmas songs [Music] items from board members if not we're adjourning

so so it's a ways off yeah and I still I think we still have to hold off on whether it should be a half year or a full year course based on the state yeah yeah that we won't know but usually in here we don't identify the lengths of the course or the number of credits there is a different policy that indicates the number of credits that students need for each course so yeah my only point was it could be offered before it's mandatory anyway for something that does not meet the requirements but just to try to get it the ball rolling on it that's all I think the the benefit of waiting that we we've seen is you get a lot of resources that were curated um so is a starting point as opposed to building the the plane and then trying to find you know fly it then yeah no first movers can be tough you can win and you can lose too yeah and then you build you spend all this time money and energy creating a curriculum that you think is great and then the state put something else out says you have to teach X Y or Z and it's like oh as well thank you sure um so should we excuse me move this to a first reading or do we want to wait until uh we have that paragraph cleared up or I guess we can kind of do it at the same time I suppose let's take a seat yeah I see if there's something that like is substantive to clear up we just do it at the second reading yeah okay yeah it's a relatively minor adjustment plus if we don't do it now we're going to be right up against the end of the year anyway yeah I think my preference would be to just move it forward and then if you guys don't mind and then we can make that those relatively minor adjustments uh you know we pull from the cave so I'm a little surprised that they didn't have that updated but we'll uh we'll double check it and go from there yeah I mean I'm comfortable with this I prefer to just move it forward and keep it going all right um then I will uh make a motion uh to move UH 60 61 for let me get that correct names here um oh these are those are the actual names this is just curriculum and basic instruction yes okay I'm not too jazzy yeah I was like oh okay um so uh move uh policy number 6140 curriculum and 6142 basic instruction uh to a first reading is there a second do I see a hand uh Tim second um any discussion on the motion Sam so we'll just do modifications at the second read then I just want Clarity in well I don't know this well this wasn't the first reading though it wasn't on the agenda as the first reading so technically the okay the next one be the first reading officially this is really discussion impossible first reading so this would be a first reading okay all right which gives us the flexibility of yeah we still have two more to make adjustments okay thank you okay I think you know Thursday when we give the curriculum report he'd say that you know we're in the process of updating some dates but just you know this is what is evolving stay tuned for final yeah okay um any other discussion or questions um all right seeing none um all in favor it is unanimous all right thank you and um we will move on to two policies for a third reading Dr Solon thank you if you recall I mean this one was the the ultimate formality that the board had adopted our goals in the fall but it's this is a unique situation where the board adopts our goals and then we have to put them into the policy manual so uh if you recall our focus is on complex thinking and social emotional learning that that really hasn't changed uh and these are the The Guiding principles the vision of The Graduate I know this will obviously all look familiar and then we're taking out the old goals that we have the the 16 goals that you know as I've often pointed out even working in the district for a long time nobody could tell you what the 16 goals were uh but you know now certainly people are really familiar with complex thinking and social emotional learning and then our performance standards were updated uh because I'm sure you'll remember Adam through the uh personalized learning task force several years ago we had many meetings with a really dedicated crew who spent a lot of time updating that and taking feedback from the community is we did this last time around as well uh including the business Community your community that parents and staff and students so that's why you know I feel really strongly about these because it really is reflective of the the thoughts of our our community any comments or questions okay great I don't have any either so the next one uh again you know by the time we get to a third reading I feel it I don't wanna bore you but uh we have the third reading around uh nepotism and it reflects some updates within the law you'll see you know again we took out civil unions because they no longer live exist in Connecticut uh and then the big one is for purpose of this policy of formant shall be considered a supervisor because there's a specific carve out that Foreman are not considered supervisors and and when we further press that we learned that you could build that into your specific policy and so we ultimately made that change any questions or comments no okay um well then that being said uh make a motion to move uh policy zero zero two five strategic goals uh performance standards and four one one two dot eight slash four two one two dot eight nepotism employment of relatives um to a third and final reading and for a consideration by the full board is there a second 10 seconds um any discussion or comment seeing none all in favor it's unanimous great um let's see uh Dr Solon do we have anything under other I know I don't have anything we do not okay um I'll let someone else entertain a motion for a German for our all entertain a motion for a German Sam seconds okay oh oh wait wait wait hold on let's not get ahead of ourselves Sam go ahead I just for uh is there any way that I've sewn Just for future meetings we can and kind of visit the equity policy I don't believe we have one we do not yeah yeah typically I mean if you talk to the chair and the uh of the committee we could add that to the agenda do we have um what would the equity policy be referencing something from Cabe there are drafts there are certainly draft Equity um I would point out while we're considering that I mean this is I know this is a different policy altogether but there's also a civility policy that we had talked about at one point that's the only reason I bring it up again is not to just really overdo it but to indicate uh if you recall earlier this year we were cited by cave as being a board with exemplary practices and uh one of those things is I'm always trying to see if we can do a little bit better one of the things that would Elevate us to the next tier of that recognition is a civility policy as well so certainly you know Mr grippo and you know Miss Rosenberg if you guys want to talk about adding anything potentially certainly not to lead you out to because Sam brought it up you know there's uh there's room there we could certainly add that to the agenda as far as civility policy is that something we've looked up before um we did and I think this this group uh at the time felt it was worth review and then uh I think just because of what we were going through at the time there was a concern that and I know it wasn't the intent of this group that it might be perceived as us trying to stifle public comment I think right now we're we're operating in a different environment than we were uh two years ago when we were you know initially looking at that it was a you know when we were in the throes of uh mask again and all that other stuff uh and so you know maybe now we're in a different place to consider that uh and it might be interpreted differently perhaps you know food for thought Food For Thought yes I need to share those with you guys um ASAP and that way it'll give you an idea of what we're talking about to determine whether or not you feel it should be added to the agenda I think it I think it'd be good especially with all the work that Tony's doing on the cave side to promote you know the civility practices and so forth I think we're in position now to try to move that forward you know yet again I think this group thought that before it was just a sensitivity that it not be and I'll certainly send those to the you guys and you can take a look at those drafts and then determine if you want to add that to the agenda or not yeah on the on the civility thing I'll just mention that I mean my recollection was there were kind of two pieces to it there was staff and then elected officials and the staff is the bigger concern for me for me personally as one of seven board members I kind of feel like as much as I don't like what happened a year ago and I think this is our anniversary right now this Thursday's meeting um you know if someone wants to come to a meeting and point the finger at me and be very very direct about what I'm doing wrong in their opinion I think that's I think that's appropriate it depends exactly where it goes and that's that's what's difficult for me defining that but I definitely have a lower tolerance for um staff being mistreated than myself personally sure anyway that that was part of where I was coming from on it that's it for me yeah so um you know we'll uh we'll pull up some drafts and we'll see what we have and you know kind of go from there so um there we go nice move I'm gonna go I'm gonna watch this video back just to see if the thumb pops up on the screen during the video playback uh anyhow um all right well that being said um I will now officially uh entertain a motion to adjourn is there a second 10 seconds um all right all in favor we are adjourned thank you good night everybody Happy Valentine's Day

them uh through this basis we're able to do a more smoother transition from students coming in from Bobby Curie High School to Indian Oasis High School and through those processes we're able to Their names were called. It was by class. The the juniors all were together and they came up on the stage and shook hands with Marquetta and Lamont. Well, Lamont asked me to be up there also and they the kids were so excited that they were being recognized. I guess they've never done this and um they were so excited and it was such a nice event and again would have never known. I saw it on the activity and it just said something of certificates or something and they would have really loved to have had some more administrators board whatever there didn't realize that we don't get an explanation of what it is. So that being said the board I I know that people would have wanted to be there. I mean it was a really really good ceremony. Every child got their name announced, walked across the stage, got the congratulations.

so I can give that to all of you okay is that a deal breaker refranka I mean I'm going to move forward with it or what I mean you're still going to get you the information but let me just say delete oh you have it here okay can we move forward with it or do you want to table it I know we have to but it's not the end of the year yet so I don't think it's a make or break thing but okay anything further on it all those in favor anyone opposed thank you for Communications donations 2007 Toyota Tundra valued at six thousand four hundred and seventy five dollars donated by Mr Vernon Stevens from Andover in a 2007 Volvo valued at three thousand four hundred dollars donated by Miss Jillian gray also from Andover I see no articles here and uh don't believe any public participation uh John your report please update on the new program approvals please so um we got a final approval of the department we got a final approval from the Department of uh DSE on Aviation child care and programming were all approved and uh we're now working on Part B which is due on March 3rd so between the part B approval to getting ready for part I mean part A approval getting ready for Part B approval very short window with a lot of work to do so we feel good about getting that work done but particularly in the aviation program there's an enormous amount of work that we have to do to prepare for Part B once Part B is approved then the next aspect will be for the Department of Ed to come in in May to do an inspection of the space that that the programs will be located as well as looking at curriculum and doing a safety inspection of the space meeting with our advisory committee for those programs as well that'll all happen in May and then once that's completed we'll get a final okay to start the program in September so we're on target we are meeting just every day our CTE team is meeting um for a good part of the day to work on the project of getting part be completed and ready to go so there are some action steps that we have to take in order to be ready and prepared in which I will be requesting a vote from the committee a little further into the meeting around Aviation for the most part Child Care space is looking pretty good in programming um determining where that program will be located uh looks pretty good at this point as well so I think we're in good shape for those three programs looking good to open them next year at this point anyways but still lots of work to do to to finalize everything questions uh concerning them anything okay John the uh the purchase of a a hanger for Aviation please so um one of the one of the main requirements for us the probably the biggest challenge we have is aviation in having finding a home for them out at the airport we have to in order to get that program approved we do have to have a hangar we are also building some space here a hanger space here at glts which will take you know a year and a half to two years to complete but there is a hanger for sale out at Lawrence airport it's on the market for 320 thousand dollars I've been in contact with the owner and a representative who is doing the work to sell the hanger for them um and um I at this point what I would need from the committee is a vote to continue negotiating the purchase of of that Hangar um in order to have that space ready for uh to put in our report for Part B that we do have uh in fact a space that we're going to deliver that program instruction for that program so um I would entertain a vote from the committee to move forward on on that there's recommendations recommendation on the table about purchasing a hanger for our new uh Aviation programs have a motion on that please have a motion so move have a second Zoila you have a question oh sorry I didn't hear hanger they basically like a big garage where you keep their airplanes in yep y'all set Joe my Mr Hannah Mr Lavoy you said we're going to building space here where we would be building the space here would be connected to one of the buildings or is it out back yeah so if you remember we put in for a a grant uh we put in for five million dollars next to the pool yes which we were approved for four million so that's where we're going to build this the uh space uh here at the school for the hangar it'll include a space to uh to do teach the students how to repair airplanes but also have some classroom space as well as part of that plan also we did some we got some preliminary drawings done for the back of the school for two smaller additions to add more classroom space because in increasing student population to for these three new programs means also a need to increase space for classrooms as well so that uh we had preliminary drawings which were sent as part of this grant proposal when we got the grant the drawings for the aviation program and the two spaces were submitted as part of this grant for approval so uh utilizing the funds for those three projects have been approved by the state to utilize that money and then we also anticipated using some of our Esser dollars that are being which we'll have to put some amendments in so we looked at that as well and we're also looking at possibly going to our cities and towns which uh we may be an option uh we're working we're waiting for the Architects to get back to us on some more concrete numbers on the costs they gave us some preliminary numbers but um more concrete numbers that now that we have approval to move forward from the state on these programs we're working on those numbers now to come up with more concrete to see if we need to maybe ask for a little more Capital Improvement money in this year's budget we may be okay we may need an extra 500 000 we may need an extra million but we're trying to figure that out now the new classroom space will be dedicated to the aviation program uh no the English maths what academic programming as well as some related Theory program for the aviation program and some of the other programs but also includes space for academic programming what's up excuse me yeah this is the show it's kind of related to the motion that's on the floor in terms of deciding what to do but you said that you have uh are working with the Architects for classroom space for academics correct yes and so my overall question is how many additional students freshman students are we looking to take in with our three new programs yeah so we're looking to somewhere around 40 to 45 additional students this year in freshman class and are you anticipating we'd need one new English teacher two new English teachers new science teachers math and so on how many of each subject are you anticipating to be able to handle that and then in terms of the classrooms that we're looking at um is I'm assuming that there isn't a single inch of space right within our own confines have we ever thought of using what was affectionately once known as the dog track the um space outside of the shipping receiving area uh it used to be with the business office Courtyard thank you not the dog track that caught you um so like I'm thinking modular classrooms gambling addiction yeah so so we have we're looking to just increase by one academic uh staff member moving into next year right now that's our anticipation each of the academic areas discipline yeah yeah one of each each of the academic area each of the four core subjects English math science and social studies um one more question absolutely okay related to this Hangar have has the discussion gone so far as perhaps the owner would be looking to make a healthy tax deduction um as a officers and says a Goodwill gesture whatever has that been discussed at all so interesting you should ask that because I told Frank this morning when I was talking to him about it that my first attempt will be uh trying to have it see if you would be interested in donating person who owns it is my understanding is very wealthy owns hangers all over this all over the country and this one happens to just be one that he hasn't had a lot of interest in and so I was looking to uh to get it off his hands so that will be my first attempt uh is to uh so I've got the person that's overseeing this sale for him I've asked for a meeting with the owner because he's the owners has put it in his hand but I've asked for a meeting with the owner so I can approach him and put together a little presentation why how it would benefit students and benefit kids in our area if he would consider that so that'll be my first attempt and then if that doesn't work then how can I reduce the cost this is a toe one follow-up to that is this person that owns the hangar a local businessman or he just happens to have a hanger here for when he comes to do business yeah uh my understanding is not a local businessman I think he lives in Connecticut I believe and uh so my first before I sit down and talk with him I I want to learn more about who he is and where his interests lies so I know what are the right conversations to have with them that might have an impact on them in terms of wanting to help us so I think I need to know more about him and so I can educate him about who we are as well and and so that is something I'm working on right now and I've asked the gentleman who's overseeing the sale of the hangar for him uh to get back to me after he spoke to his the owner to have a meeting with me it seems like the owner's not really that much interested in doing anything but getting rid of it so anything further John as far as oh yes to hate him John just a follow-up on that how are we going to publicize these programs I know we talked the day after the meeting I had asked you if we can get in touch with the pr firm that handles us and find out what they're doing for us and how they're doing it I know Cassandra's in the building and she does a fine job I know our numbers are up and that's fine but I think we should start thinking now about keeping them up can we get in touch with the pr firm and and tell them what yeah we're paying these people we don't know what they're doing yeah we we will be contacting the pr firm I was trying to see and get a little more to know that we had this um hang around in the air at the airport as well as a little bit more of what preparation here at the school so I could report on what our preparation is at this point in terms of uh opening the programs but we will be putting something out there very soon publicly out to the community what the plans are in terms of uh glts growth with programming and some of the other major changes with inside the building so there was also the upgrades to the space in the shop and some of the chat I want to do a article that encompasses it all you know everything from upgrading a lot of our programs that exist now as well as new programming and as well as looking towards the future increasing enrollment and the impact it has on the community so more of a very comprehensive uh article out there so and we'll do that sometime in March through the pr firm am I correct yes with the fpr form and some of their expertise Mr Joe yes looking I'm trying to think as big as possible here going back when our Renovations and building were happening and we had 20-something modular classrooms down back but we also had a satellite campus over Off Broadway and I think we had three shops in that satellite and each day of the week the students would be bussed there and an administrator went we took turns doing it going over there and being the administrator of the day in this satellite campus so when our students are basically going to be off campus over there have we thought through the ramifications of the busing that would be included at some point added on to this already amazing document and then what personnel would be required over there would we have to have a nurse there um so I I don't want to I don't want to say I don't want to jump the gun but has every last detail whatever been thought about on having an entire program off campus and and what personnel it would be necessary to do it safely yeah so we have lots of experience on running programs off campus so we have our house building program we have nursing programs Dental Programs we have a lot of programs that are offered so the the closest thing I could say that we have um where we take kids out to build a house that are on stagings on a lot of real serious uh environments in terms of ensuring student safety and and so the aviation program would be similar it would be an off-site where the instructor would be the lead person with regards to the only one that would be out at the uh at the classroom environment which would be the aviation and the number of students that would be there at any one given time plus the inside would have to meet all the state regulations in terms of the environment of a classroom so we have to you know once we own it then we have to do some work in designing the inside and making sure their bathroom facilities safety facilities all of that um training for the all of our instructors have uh first aid training and CPR training and all that so all of those things will have been thought about and I think we have also been in communication we have a consultant from uh Westfield Academy who's working for us who they also have the same situation where they have a Aviation Hangar out at the airport and looking at we've looked at their space we've had conversations with them he's helping us design the space he's also helping us with equipment helping us with curriculum so just yesterday the team that's working on developing the part B for the final approval has been in communication with him we pay him a consulting fee he helped us with part A is helping us with Part B uh very knowledgeable very excited to help us through this process and so we'll be Westfield Academy which is they have they're the only other Aviation program in the state they're the only Aviation program in the state at us at a secondary level uh and they have quite an extensive program there where they have um they have 21 or 17 airplanes and one Jet and two helicopters in their program um so they but and they haven't been in uh existence about four years I think the program hasn't been around all that long but they were the first and um seemed to be very successful and Fe FAA we have to have not only state meet State curriculum Frameworks but we also have to meet faa's curriculum Frameworks and safety regulations there so the FAA has assigned a consultant to us to help us develop our program and get it off the ground so there's a is a year and a half process just to get approval from you can't open a program without FAA approval and so they uh they're on our advisory and we have a person that I've already had Communications with um close Communications with and we'll be meeting with him on a regular basis to help guide us to make sure that we're meeting their standards as well thank you okay superintendent when you talk about purchasing a hanger you mean just a hanger right because it's on lease land right yeah so the land belongs to the city nobody owns no one can own the land out at the airport it's owned by the city all you're doing is Lisa we're leasing the land um but we'll own the building yeah right and have the rights to leasing that land so and it has to be a also the purchase of the hangar also has to be approved by the air airport commission out at in Lawrence and also has to be approved by the state so there's a long process once we've decided that we would move forward in purchasing it you know just getting an agreement on the purchase of it then we have to go through that process of having it approved and they have to accept us as a as a tenant on at the airport the airport commission so we'll have to meet with their board and have conversations with them regarding uh the value that it brings to the airport into the community as well as to the states so there's still a lot of work even on that to accomplish once we've actually decided we want to move forward and we don't know the cost of the lease right we don't have anything uh it's I think it was 50 cents per square foot yeah per square foot uh to lease it minimal amount of money I promised almost the last one um have we had that conversation I would think that would be step one are we even going to be welcome there so that conversation has already happened okay yeah yeah we've already we've been at the airport several times and met with some of the people from the commission uh and as well as the airport managers very much in favor of supporting and helping the process and the commission's pretty excited to have us come on board so we feel good about that anything further all those in favor all those opposed well she carries okay John update on the school projects if you haven't covered them already so um uh first project Let's uh we'll talk about the Reggie cafes now open been open I think a couple of weeks the one piece that's still not in yet is the refrigeration for the pastry set that's the only thing that's not in yet uh my understanding is coming in Thursday but I've heard it 15 times now it's coming in on Thursday so hopefully this Thursday it really shows up but they feel pretty good about it so that's the only thing left to put in there and that's totally done the Four Winds and it looks really great and the Four Winds um the only thing left in the Four Winds to do really is um finish the tables which we're going to finish next week so we've taken the old tables we're taking the tops off and we're putting uh we've built new mahogany tops for the tables and the mahogany we got last year from the church in all the pews from a church in Methuen last year we took all the pews apart we playing down so we have some really beautiful mahogany that will match our uh our glass door that's in there our they'll match the tables that's all the tables are all glued together they need to be planed and sanded and completed which we're going to complete over vacation uh February vacation and we're looking to we've already looked at a few different model chairs to purchase if they're not in we're looking to open it uh the second week of March if the chairs aren't in then we'll utilize what's there until they do come in but two of the places we've looked at for chairs it's about a four-week lead time on the chairs so um we had looked at keep taking the library chairs but we're going to use them for another purpose uh the equipment that's in the library we have another use for all that uh Furniture so um that won't go to waste and it'll actually be utilized uh for some educational purposes and for some meeting purposes and other things so uh that'll be good the furniture for the library is coming in next week and so that project will be done as well next week on the Four Winds will be done be ready to open the second week of March Child Care Center we have a designated date of opening March 13th taking children in on March 13th the space is pretty much done they're going to do a big cleanup on it tomorrow the custodians or was it tonight I think some of the custodians were coming in early today to clean the space the child care space because it's construction is pretty much done for the most part a few little uh things to get done on it but for the most part done all the inspections that are necessary are happening next week Electrical Plumbing um alarm systems the occupancy and we hope to get the occupancy permit next week and then on the 28th the state is coming to do a State uh is coming to do a final inspection and if that passes we'll get our license and we'll be ready to open for March 13th we would we were going to Target March 6 but just in case there's a blip and they want us to do something let that I let staff know yesterday our targeted date was March 13th to open so and it looks really good I mean I think space looks great can you hold that thought Mr savello uh Jenna we're going to have a grand opening for the um Child Care Program we are we are we're going to what we're going to try to do is uh have an opening once I know we got the state approval on the 28th uh the following week one night that week we're going to try to put in have an opening for the staff after school to view it and then after that once it's open we'll do an opening what I'd like to do is uh an opening for all three spaces on the same night have uh maybe we could do it on our next school committee meeting at five o'clock to let do a grand opening for the community from five to seven or something like that we can have services but we are going to have an opening a grand opening for that as well for those uh cosmetology Four Winds Reggie in the child care center um and um we won't be we're hoping to have the windows in by then if the windows were in we could do also Automotive but we're not quite sure if that's going to be the case yet further John uh I think that's it that's it okay moving on uh out of state travel for Ms Jacqueline Hunter instructional technology specialist to travel to Pennsylvania Convention Center for the professional development and Leadership exchange at the iste conference on June 24th through June 28th the cost is 3180.76 have a motion on that police discussion all those in favor aye that he would opposed okay John Transportation bid please there was excuse me there was a handout also it was given to us okay so um we put out a uh a invitation to bid for a new bus contract um the uh RFP that went out Melissa put it together she did a really an exceptional outstanding job and putting it together was very well very comprehensive uh I think went far and above Clarity and touched upon everything that's critical and important touched upon many of the things that we had challenged with over the last few years to try to get a contract that would put us in a better position to hold the bus company accountable so I do want to commend uh Melissa for the well done work that she did on that and we got so it went out we got the bids were opened I should say the bid was open we only got one bid and it was the same company that we have service from now North Reading uh busing company and I'll let Melissa go through the the numbers with you on what they came in at and what the increase is over what our existing contract is so the numbers are a little bit um shocking I thought they came in for the first year it's a 25 increase over what we're currently paying for regular transportation um but it is we do need to note that the bus company didn't increase our prices for the last two years so we were to do kind of a big increase I was actually projecting an 18 increase so this was even higher than what I thought um you guys all have the numbers in front of you do you have any questions I don't have a question but I would be totally remiss this is the most comprehensive document I've been looking at these things for a lot of years and the work that went into this the detail is outstanding and I really have to compliment you and thank you for a job really well done even though you couldn't control the price coming in it it is so accurate thank you Mr Cirillo did you have a question we didn't didn't charge us more but we will pay more than any other school district in the area during covid so this difference to me is an insult from the bus company especially winning their services to us has been more than lackluster so the unfortunate part of it I guess they're the only game in town right now um but we have to really look at something moving forward okay uh on the bus conference so your recommendation superintendent is oh I'm sorry Zola sorry so this is the new the new the bit like the total what's the old what is the um well the prices that it used to be it's not here right [Music] I don't think I have the exact number in front of me but we're currently at 1.4 I want to say it's like 1.47 million and this is now 1.7 the new the new number so yeah that's Year One yeah 1.7 okay anything further John your recommendation is I would recommend we go with the with the better that their proposal for the contract because we don't have any other options actually we have a recommendation for the superintendent do I have a motion please have a second discussion Frank this is for how many years three years three three years with uh two until desire to do it's a two-year option if we at that time decide decide that we want to extend it for those two years we're about to we find about something better can we get out of this contract not if we sign a three-year contract well there there are mechanisms in the in the contract in the bid that if they're not providing the service as stated in the contract that we do have an out but I mean the problem is we'd have to go out to bid again and the reality is would probably just be stuck with the same company yes I know that John was going to meet with the people at Whittier to see how viable their program is I know it's been in place forever but at the total price of this I guess we have three years to figure out if we can afford or be able to run our own Fleet of buses so if we pass this tonight it gives us some time if the committee wanted to go that route to really delve into whether it was a viable option or not uh thank you Leo um I'm gonna agree with you Marilyn and I was out there with John so I know that um we would have to it's going to take time to build what we need and the unfortunate part right now we could do it today I would jump all over that but we it's going to take time and looking at finances and what work we can actually do in the purchasing of the buses so are these three years will give us time to really look at something anything further it all loans in favor all those opposed motion carries okay uh oh I'm sorry just just a quick comment yeah you know albeit we don't have any control now that we have a new bus this new bus contract the one thing we can look at is late runs and Athletics and all that if we can provide any of that service it would save us some money so we have you know many buses and other options and we've tried to utilize even our mini buses we have here but the challenge is getting bus drivers so we've offered now we've offered the custodians of five percent increase in their contract if they're willing to get a 7D license so then we could utilize them and really save some money but and I've spoken to almost each one of them individually I've had no takers so it's really hard to get people that are interested in driving buses so but if if down the road we came up you know uh continue to try to pursue that we could save a little bit of money not a substantial but we could save some money uh by doing some of that uh that work ourselves okay uh moving on um uh Frank uh sorry um so we were to get people to to drive some of the Vans and buses would it be just the evening oh yeah it would yes it would only be um two of two uh different events we uh you need a CDL license to bring students back and forth home but to do the other kinds of activities you can do it with a 7D license so those are the kinds of things we could do where we could do you know take the kids to the different track events or athletic events and bring them home I mean bring them back to the school what we can't do is drive them home unless you have a CDL license anything for them certainly okay John admission report is in the packet student Achievement Award for high need students in the packet we have any questions or calling you have any comments on those documents John uh just a quick comment on uh the award the new award uh that the commissioner is putting out the new award program that the commissioner is putting out so basically what he's doing is he is putting out an award for I need students who perform uh well in the uh MCAS so he's going to send out certificates to the school and some kind of gift certificate to award to the students that's supposed to start this year we I haven't seen any names we have to provide them with the names and everything but I haven't seen I just we just received a communication from him he will also provide a letter to those students who are recognized so this is a new award program that he's starting but I did put a new package just so you're aware of it that he's starting this new program okay um John you update the committee on The Advisory Board of recommendations of safety on The Advisory Board recommendations um I've met with each of the individual uh Millicent myself actually um and the CT director I've met with the supervisors of different programs to review all the advisory recommendations for not only safety but all the recommendations and Melissa and I will be moving uh meeting this week we were talking about it today to look at what we could fund this year but we will definitely Target all this ensure that we're meeting all any of the safety concerns or areas of safety that need to be addressed we will definitely address those this year and quickly to get those resolved and then some of the other recommendations but I believe almost all the recommendations I think we could probably figure out some way of for the most part funding those recommendations before the even before the end of this year so we will update you on those exact projects or activity will be doing to address those recommendations at our next meeting okay excuse me superintendent update the committee on the legislative breakfast coming on Friday March 24th please so we will be um having our yearly or annual I don't think we've had for a couple years because of covid but we'll be doing our annual legislative breakfast this year March 24th which gives us time to talk about uh special funding with them that we might be targeting before the April when they start putting their getting their bills organized at the house and in the Senate we do know that uh representative uh Moran Frank Moran has already moving a six a three billion dollar bill through this uh house and in the Senate there's also a bill to try to provide more funding for putting additions on and expanding access for vocational uh education uh and some uh some of that funding can go for new schools but a big amount of it is to expand existing Pro schools programming and so we'll be doing uh work with mava to ensure support for that I will also be giving you some communication on that bill as well to ask you to submit a letter to our legislators maybe we could do it as a as a committee as a whole I'll put a letter together to have the committee sign off on to support his bill and I'll give you some more detail both on that bill and a few other vocational bills that are going to be submitted in this legislative year at our next meeting and but that particular legislative breakfast we'll be talking and looking for support for that also some of our own such as if we decide that we want to expand and we need more funding for any of our existing projects or expansion of the school for adding on once we have our final numbers there's a couple other special programs we're looking at to try to provide more access here at glts for some of our high school students that do not have access now that we may be looking for a bill but at our next meeting I will give you more comprehensive report on long-term ranges I'm going to do give you a preliminary report on my five-year strategic plan next meeting where an update on on the work that's being done on that which will include some of the long-range plans for expansion of the school programs student enrollment all of that so that it will be outlined more clearly for you before the legislative breakfast so you will be educated and understand also have the opportunity to weigh in on what you'd like to see and whether you like the vision or the ideas before anything is presented at the legislative breakfast I would like to get your input on all of that so I'll present that to you at our next school committee meeting Craig did you have a question no okay okay moving on uh we've got activities seen on all businesses uh District committee priorities policies this is this is for Joe what was exercise or what time okay we're not we're not uh we're not there yet so just so you can new business there's three items on table matters position title change part time or full-time positions and dental assistants is there any need to pull any of those off to speak about them this evening nope okay well John I think I think we may have in posting dental assistant do we put that in this this one Susan we are looking to uh uh post for a dental assistant to re for a replacement for next year but also I got to pull this off of need a motion to take the position of dental assistant instructor off of the table have a second discussion all those in favor anyone of those continue John I'm sorry okay so we're looking uh I believe we're going to have it on postings tonight uh looking to hire someone for dental assistant um uh to replace a dental assistant teacher that's going to be retiring uh in September but in order to start because there's only three instructors in that program we're looking to bring on somebody early to get trained and to get familiar with the curriculum for next year and fill some of the voids of particularly clinical work that that we need another person to help work through some of the clinical that we do outside of the school so we'd like to bring in that person at this time and be better prepared for next school year as well as meet some of the needs of this completing this year's clinical work that's going on outside the school any questions or comments Mr Hayden John didn't we have the director of it's position posted uh yes we do have that posted and um we we have a community we have a subcommittee working on that they're actually meeting tomorrow to make final decision on the three candidates are going to start interviewing uh so they're going through that and also are putting together the questions they're meeting tomorrow morning on two of those uh aspects of it so they can start interviewing uh soon one other question I asked this before you said you were going to get the answer did we get all our computers back from the Lost IT director we did get everything back yes getting off track here a little bit okay uh can I this time then can I instruct it to take the dental assistant instructor out of the table matters at this point no take it out totally it won't list it won't be listed again right so we're all I don't need a vote on that I just went on a consensus that everybody's happy with the superintendent's explanation okay Personnel consideration report resignations we have a special ed instructor effective jet alongside oh HR business yes um with the part-time and full time you want to discuss that yeah yeah I have a motion to uh a recommendation from the superintendent to take part time to full-time position uh out of table matters some motion do you have a second all those a favor anyone opposed go ahead John so now that that contract is completed uh we would like to uh have the HR business office Specialists that helps with the H helps the HR Director also does some work in the finance office from part-time to a full-time position uh I think uh the time that the added time would take a lot of the pressure and support the HR Director in keeping up with a lot of what's uh been on her plate would make a huge difference in staying on top of that as well as supporting the work that happens I think it also what I think might help us I believe in uh I think we're looking for someone to also learn some of the responsibilities of payroll and that that we don't have now that that person might be able to learn in in case something were to happen so we would like to move that person the full time okay we have a recommendation from the superintendent do you have a motion please some of one of his little second okay discussion questions comments yes Zoila wasn't that part of the negotiation the full time to the part-time to full time no no it wasn't no no okay John was bringing this after we started negotiations so we tabled it until after the negotiations were completed so you're saying the negotiations completed yes that's colorful clerical okay that was done last week right now okay John is this a union position is this a represented position or human resources is usually a contract position because of the delicacy yeah this is not a new position okay and what would the impact be for us to go for her full time money um well to the end it would be minimal money for this year it's only the difference between um I'm not sure what her salary is or what the amount of money but it's it it's not going to cost us all that much money we can well afford it um given the vote that you made tonight also but I would say that um does it have minimal uh impact on our budget even for next year all anything further all those in favor then you want to pose we can remove that also from the table matters moving on to Personnel consideration resignations uh special ed instructor uh effective uh January 24th 2023 leave of absence assistant principle effective January 11 2023 culinary arts instructor effective January 19th 2023 El instructor effective February 27 2023 history instructor effective February 27th 2023 I'm sorry oh and uh School adjustment counselor effective February 28 2023 did I say something wrong oh okay yeah uh okay retirements I see none appointments we get a John uh well yeah I just had a question on the leaves of absence in my mind or recollection I thought a leave of absent had a start and an end date uh these just I don't know John do you ever most of these leaves have end dates but just not listed here approximately they have approximate and they some of them are firm some of them are not totally firm because they're somewhere for maternally paternity leave different various reasons but um but most of them do have end dates might be a good idea superintendent without mentioning the people's names to to put the uh like I said without mentioning their names or even you know their position other than what's here you know I mean calling the acts instructor there's three or four of them uh you know maybe so that the committee would have an idea you know in the future yeah we can give you the end dates if we for the ones we do know in the future absolutely okay every time it's done uh appointments uh Ms Sheen Davis electrical instructor January 23 2023 John uh job postings the following would have to be voted on ladies and gentlemen dental assistant instructor for teacher contract replacement position uh Aviation instructor for teacher contract that's a new position so you're seeing here some positions that we would like to post for the new some of the new programs uh we're projecting that may be difficult to find instructors in these areas so we do want to get a posting out as soon as we can but these are all for the next school year so the aviation instructor could teach a contract Child Care instructor a teacher contract programming instructor for teacher contract uh uh in evening or do you want to vote on those well we vote on that those four right there have a motion on those please that's presented by the superintendent discussion yes Mr Hayden um John the retirement positions why are those coming before us can't you just replace the teacher who's being retired we're not adding a position where are you very much school counselor position it says uh replacement posted yes but they don't have to come before us for a vote do they well no but we've always had to practice we've always made that we've always had that practice in the past that's the only reason I'm bringing it forward okay uh we have do we have a motion in a second yeah just this discussion all those in favor anyone opposed continue John please um evening adult auto collision repair instructor two for sixty five dollar not 65 an hour for 280 hours of instruction fifty dollars an hour for prep Time March to June 2023 Monday through Thursday from 4 P.M to 8 P.M to be supported through a contract with the Commonwealth Corporation for a Career Technical initiative Grant awarded for an occupational skills training program for adults this is an annual position that we've posted and continue this particular program to support adults who are unemployed or underemployed school counselor guidance counselor that's been taken off let's just do this one here John okay okay evening adult Auto Collision of a second of any discussion John what it says um supported through the contract does that mean the Commonwealth Corporation for Career Technical initiative Grant they're paying the whole they're paying the whole thing yes okay anything further all those in favor is what opposed okay strategic plan uh uh the last one is a strategic Plan Focus committee we're looking for eight staff members to work 20 hours each of them to be conducted after school hours 2022-23 contract uh agreement for their salaries these are new positions that um I think you have a post a uh description of their duties they will perform as a Committee Member another second discussion all those in favor anyone opposed future agenda items the March District committee meeting John so in um on March the committee meeting for March 14th I think 14 14th I won't be here I'm going to be off on vacation that week taking the week that week particular week off um so I'm looking to move I'd like to see if the committee would be uh minimal to moving that meeting from the 14th to what did we decide now 28th okay a little confusing give me one second yeah I had Sue [Music] before we came in here there was a discussion about the budget um the vote um in the 28th of March maybe a little bit too late so I think right Melissa we were thinking of canceling the February 28th and having a March 7th in a March 28th okay this is oops I know okay so that that's what we discussed but Melissa can you explain a little bit more please would like to present the fiscal year 24 budget but we're waiting for the numbers from the governor which are supposed to be out the beginning of March maybe the end of February but um we don't want to wait too long to present that to you because we do want to get those numbers to the towns so but if they're not out by March 7th there's no need to meet then the governor's numbers should be I should have them by the third so John and I could present the budget to school committee I think it's on the 7th okay if they're not out there's no need to meet then that's my just my own I'm not saying they're not going to be yeah but I think stranger things have happened in life that's true you know what I'm saying that's all so want to make a preliminary uh I mean for the uh the seventh if uh if if needed if and then we will skip the 14th still yeah and then meet on the 28th okay is that agreeable to uh to everybody yeah I'm going to Puerto Rico so I'll be happy to take you you guys can help me with the language uh in any case uh so what that would mean is we would still have our February 28th meeting then if we need a budget we would provisionally right now or determine that we will have a meeting on March 7th and then we'll have a meeting on March 28th just so that everybody's clear so it'd be the 28th of February the 7th of March and the 28th of March right now oh yeah we're not going to have the 28th we'll cancel that one okay so we'll move the 28th to the 7th and then the 20th about even so we will meet again until the 7th of March our next meeting will be March 7th and then the meeting after that will be March 28th I'm pretty sure we're going to get the numbers for March 7th I have uh there's been a lot of communication with different people who have the governor's ear people like the executive director for Mars has been in communication with her office there's a pretty uh there's a commitment to have it ready for the end of her she has a commitment to have it ready for the 28th somewhere around the 28th of February last word is she's really working hard to try to meet that commitment very good I hope she's successful um anything further okay does everybody understand the record the motion on the table oh go ahead I'm sorry Frank can you repeat the motion okay the motion is um that we are going to um eliminate the March 28th meeting we're going to meet Fabby February 28th meaning excuse me February 28th meeting meet on March 7th and March 28th for the 14th is another description I have a motion on that discussion all those in favor anyone opposed Mrs Fitzgerald yes I had another agenda item looking towards the meeting on March 28th if the superintendent could report or give us a report of the actual plans for classroom spacing for our three new um projects and the actual spaces that they will have so the programming the child care is pretty obvious and then um will there be a place in the building should we not have the hangar immediately where would we be putting them so a report because I'm really nervous that we have just bitten off so much all at one time that in order to take these students in knowing that it's greatly expanding you know the other parts of the building so from cafeteria space and so on that we could see at least a preliminary plan of what's Happening that would be like six weeks from now so I'd be happy to do that I'll give you a complete comprehensive plan on how many staff members will be new for next year and where this where they'll be situated in terms of classroom space and shop space and then moving forward over the next three years as these three programs become fully enrolled what the spaces we need and how we're going to meet those needs I'll have that all for you in on that 28th March 28th right under superintendent's uh the superintendent public portion yes Mr Hayden one more please we're not expecting to lose any existing disciplines to make room for these people we're not losing any of the shops uh there's no plans to close any shops at this time anything further yes uh Frank uh I want to touch on something that Tom had mentioned we were supposed to have an update a report on the marketing piece for this meeting because we have that for the next meeting oh sure yes put that under the superintendent's uh report also please okay anything further the executive session yes contract negotiations yes okay chill except the motion to go into executive session for them all those in favor aye any word opposed you called the roll Miss Fitzgerald yes Miss disler Mr Hayden Mr Cirillo yes Mr LaMontagne yes we'll be coming back I had um foreign okay meetings back in uh regular regular session superintendent you have a uh recommendation or a request excuse me your microphone John please I would ask the committee to consider uh allowing me to sell back uh enough vacation days to bring me down to 30 vacation days which is somewhere between 20 and 25 vacation days to get me down to 30 vacation days on the books because I recommendation the request for the superintendent have a motion for a second discussion did you your hand up no okay her daughter was yes sir yes I just have a comment I just want to make it public that I believe he should take those vacations instead of selling them that's all okay hey big brother all those in favor all those opposed could you call Off the Wall please when you have a moment Mr Fitzgerald yes Miss disler Mr Hayden yes Mr cirilla Mr LaMontagne yes no further business scene this evening the chair will accept the monster to adjourn all in favor we were opposed to remember we are meeting March remember we're meeting March 7th correct [Music] ly tomorrow the Mayors come at 11 30 years actually thank you is this something special there's a special award being given award ceremony yeah touring lunch I'm lunch not being Wise Guys but you can all leave now [Laughter] [Music] time to believe no they're just shocked they were open for 17 is it before 7 30. thank you make me a hero with my wife uh Mr Hayden thank you thank you very much thank you oh you gave me the hot oh no oh this no this is from Maryland Maryland thank you very much oh thanks Marilyn thanks tell Debbie I doubled down oh okay don't eat them on the way home oh okay cool don't eat them on the way home
