could take about 30 seconds and we have a new board member here and just for the audience what is a lease lease back yes so um this is a way of a delivery method and so basically we interviewed the contractor so anything over above a million dollars we have to pre-qualify them so we interview a pan of contractors and then from that we would select uh the con the contractor from that group so basically we have a choice basically you can take a look at there's I mean a whole bunch of different qualifications but we do um based on that and then we would go ahead and negotiate a prize from that and that's all part of a package that we would have at the rating for so this company um has been um been working at the Magnolia High School site uh we're adding the scope right now for the HVAC system that the Esther dollars are paying for okay so and what is the theory of lease leaseback versus other methods so you can pre-qualify the contractor so you know based on their background and their experience and so with the size of a project you can predetermine what level of um kind of work that they could possibly do okay anybody have any questions on at least Beck no okay no thank you so again it's something that we just need to make sure that we're marketing and pushing and reiterating over and over again that they are available to them um they are generic medications too so sometimes people may think oh they're not going to have what I need but it might just be under a different name it might be the same exact thing that they're taking right now and then appointment availability is most important which we do strive to have same day or next day appointments um we try very very hard for that sometimes with cold fluid sixth season it may get you know a little bit further out if you're coming in for your yearly physical but for the most part same thing our next day is our goal that we strive for and then this was just a little snapshots of some of the responses that we received and they feel like we're appropriate to go ahead and throw in there um overall like I said good good responses as a whole I was very happy with that any other questions comments I guess it's a question for children um breastfeeding me before we talked about prescription program that we were discussing how I know we were talking about medications there from this other place how would the two systems interact yeah they really would be independent shall be because a lot of them might be more generic again we're going to be focusing that program to be focusing on fully expensive medications uh which really is probably the way about maybe two to three percent of your popular but we would make sure we were working together to make sure they did not there's no overlapping of that type of implementation so maybe that solve some of the problems since those are made and one thing two to keep in mind when we're talking about any of those Pharmacy programs Junior Keeps Us in the loop too so the provider will be knowledgeable of what's available to be able to direct the patients um which is huge because a lot of times people are companies will Implement these plans that are wonderful but if they don't have anybody there to help support it doesn't get utilized so uh making sure that we have everything we have such a great working relationship with for activity they are we have other Clinic vendors too but uh proactive is just probably one of our favorites are just so easy to work with and are so willing to help us with other programs that we might be coming to our clients with uh I'll just take it one step further than Hitler's Regional program that's focusing on orthopedic surgery that's something again that we're working very closely uh with proactive because you know an employee May that may be their first stop to go talk to someone at the clinic about hey man I'm kind of this you know kind of this knee problem or you know what would you recommend she may recommend doing some exercises but it may come to a point where we want to make sure that our Clinic provider is aware of these programs so that they can recommend those type of preference to our abilities another question that was about the folks you described as high cost claims um is that I'm guessing that's people who have cancer heart surgery you know something yeah uh and you said four of the six um were engaging like where are the other two so good question we would love to see them right um that would be the ultimate goal I will say for a four out of six is a lot better than what most of my other health centers have um simply because a lot of times when people have those diagnosis they don't they forget about their Primary Care even though we're kind of the maker right so to know that four of your six are still anchored with us and still utilizing Us in some way shape or form uh is honestly the goal so yeah so you know they may have an unfortunate cancer diagnosis for example but um they're still seeing us too so again we have that support to be able to take you know any of if they have questions about which specialist should I be taking this one's telling me to take this and tell me take this just some guidance to you know understand have somebody there to help them understand what's going on Specialists don't take care and that's why we have to be seen right and we know most of the time not all the time but when we have a lot of high class claimants they usually have other combinities right so they've got other things going on whether it's high blood pressure the cancer specialist is not going to be treated so they need somebody there to support them in the emergency room care I guess you haven't mentioned that are they available to go to surrounding emergency rooms or urgent cares and weekends yeah we really want to educate again our member so you know when it's appropriate to use what facility enforcement trust any uh that's probably something you should go to an emergency room you'd want to try to be conscious of you know what Healthcare dollars that we're spending that's why having a clinic is so important because it does keep costs down for the employer and the employees too much again if you know urgent care I would I would say look to the clinic to see to see if they can solve whatever issue or whatever problem that you're having emergency room use it if you've broken a bone or you're having some chest pains there's just we'd have a great um flyer that I I can get out to everyone too that kind of that kind of gives you it's kind of like a road map like if this is going on I need to go here so it's again just I think the more that we can educate uh our members and let them know that it's appropriate to go where they need to go uh we'll definitely do all the kids and keep educating and then when you talk about marketing like I know that our retirement folks will quarterly have office hours people and do you ever do that where are you like you know somebody like you who's not necess of the primary care it's someone who can answer questions like go to the building hey you know some different proactive is going to be here we have not three musics but it's something we can definitely yeah because I think that you know people always have Healthcare Insurance questions or right that type of things yeah yeah my only experience is just make sure we're visible okay that would be the only thing is I don't you know don't put us in the closet because we want to be able to talk to me but yes no I think that would be a great idea yeah as an employee I've only got five minutes so you know right people who come chat with me for a minute and that's right right and you know you get overwhelmed with your first day you're getting all of this huge benefit details thrown at you so ours is often the one that's like oh I'll revisit that so it is nice to have some Refreshers or those people that don't feel comfortable asking their co-worker or their doctor Healthcare you know there's that fine line there too anything else thank you again for the opportunity all right um next on the agenda is discussion and there's nothing listed I suppose [Music] Vicky yes Stephanie yes and yes I actually needed items recommendation to approve the donation three thousand dollars from an anonymous donor to the bchs baseball program to introduced as needed is there a motion to uh and any discussion three thousands but a lot of uniforms snacks and equipment and you can move on with that so thank you yes no yes yes yes yes next is recommendation to approve the donation of 500 inside a to Alpha chapter which is the bchs theater Department to be used this is with the purchasing of new microphone wires and any discussion thank you and those the audio is so important when you have next airport good audio is so all right uh roll call Maybe yes Carol yes Vicky all right next is the recommendation to approve the donation of a hundred and thirteen dollars and 38 cents from Kroger to sprunica for the use of Staff supplies is there a motion so and any discussion yeah so that's the rewards program you can go on and just include choose a choose the school and a little bit of money comes in every time Maybe yes Carol yes Vicki yes yes field trip request to Brown County High School science Honor Society to the Newport Aquarium on March 3rd 2023 so emotions any discussion it's a great Aquarium number five is recommendation to approvia donation 200 from Scion is that eight hours a chapter from for the Brown County Middle School choir to be used as needed to approve foreign discussion uh I will let you know that I'm a member of his eye and I'm really glad to see them they do budget money for certain things and I'm glad that we're putting in the request so that they can use that money is using for its best purposes so um yes Carol thank you yes definitely yes yes and number six is a recommendation to approve the donation of 600 from science to the interact Club to be used as needed are there as a recommendation to improve that uh um we uh just as discussion uh this is going to go for books at the elementary schools and they'll be picking some books out and um years ago we used to give out third or fourth graders and now nobody uses dictionary so um they are going to be um Pam bond is uh I think she's still leads the internet club and she's going to be um using that money to pick out books with the teachers the kids will be able to take from hopefully after school great decided why do we also say that we need to keep the science in mind when they're doing their fundraising that we need to patronize spring flowers and I have before right here yes I would appreciate that so I know I'm interested in supporting the science and much of the money as you know those kind of back to our school speech hearing art music and literacy are their goals so we've certainly benefit all right welcome yes yes thank you yes Stephanie yes yes all right um moving on to our consent agenda uh we're gonna do all of those together starting the separation of Brown County High School varsity cheer coach Kirsten Taylor back in February 3rd 2023 uh along with five uh four appointments uh through Brown County High School Ela academic team coach Mallory Austin with a stipend as a replacement is there any discussion I want to welcome Mallory I don't think she's here tonight but I understand she has been something for Miss Frye for a while so we're excited to welcome her recipe um yes it is weird first yes Cheryl yes Vicky yes yes you and I switch places and it is all right um last we have superintendent support and since uh Miss Tracy is not here today at night um we were discussing what we might do and Carol can you have some notes that we can read there's the celebrations and things going on in the corporations competition s uh they would sponsored for Abigail engine the experience will be presenting their information the they're very robotics competition of Saturday and apparently we have Grandpa David volunteering in the first grade which I just took this new team adult education day was today at the steakhouse which doesn't have the manufacturers in my case I've seen all the cardboard and all the packing materials in that gym Road there so uh right now uh I was going to comment but I really loved the Democrat story about the fans that's awesome and uh lots of good stuff going on there and a donation by the way it sounds like from the story that the donation went to the van booster club rather than directly to us because I thought well why haven't you seen that on our agenda uh band booster is a separate 501c3 I'm excited for that um Mr Steele do you have anything to put you on the spot anything exciting going on we need to know um yeah the middle school students actually went to Purdue Polytech today uh that was our first corporate problem that our kids went and presented at um so we took six groups over to Purdue Polytech they all presented yep open Columbus so they presented to some professors and some students over there uh the corporate problem that they were given and then next week is our big Corporate Challenge week so we'll be sending kids out to Cummins to for Via to [Music] uh Columbus Regional Hospital no not Cooks crh picked up our Medical for us in lhp great so super excited about that those that's our eighth graders that are doing those corporate problems and they've been doing an amazing job so yeah so thank you Anne thanks for I was thinking it and by the way I can uh taught the cable out maybe you know less is more on the same thought so I made a note thank you uh up next is the calendar committee uh which did meet on February 1st Marlene or Dr Sony want to give an update what the committee sure discussed and what we decided to move forward with okay okay uh so each year the Board of Education adopts a calendar uh for the following school year in addition we adopt a draft calendar that is certainly subject to change uh one of the things that I know I talked about with some board members is the idea that even going out believe it or not you know as we get closer to schools opening we might adopt a draft calendar and see what happens with construction and have to make adjustments to that the school calendar to accommodate you know people moving into buildings and whatnot that's that's a good problem to have so uh the first proposal uh before you was uh unanimously agreed upon by the calendar committee which is comprised of some members of the Board of Education uh representatives from various uh Union bargaining groups teachers parents so it's a good Collective of stakeholders we review the calendar and what you'll see is that uh the proposal for 23 24 next school year has us starting um August 24th for staff they would attend two days of professional development that week they would come back on Monday the 28th the 29th would be the first day for students who would attend through the end of August like this year we had the Friday before Labor Day off that was a really popular uh adjustment is indicated by our parents and our staff and so the students would have the first in Monday Labor Day the fourth off ultimately uh as it shakes out we would have the last day for students barring no snow days would be the seventh uh the last day of Staff uh June Sabbath the last day for staff would be the 10th and that's still pretty early but there is uh room for snow days in there uh to you know I have a hard time believing will replicate this year but who knows uh so that's the 23-24 school year some of the highlights there uh the 24-25 proposal is a little bit unique in the sense that we're starting uh that last week of August with staff uh the 26th 7th and 8th students would begin on the 29th we didn't want students to come for a day and then you know have the next day off before Labor Day so they'll attend the 29th 30th a two-day week that week and then start in Earnest after Labor Day with a full rest of the month after Labor Day as a result of the way the calendar Falls that year the last day for students would be the 9th of June uh and again these things are interesting in how they fall uh they one of the things that we decided rather than having that Friday off before Labor Day weekend was to begin the winter break on the 23rd because typically that would be like a half day we made that a full day off uh made an adjustment there because it didn't make sense to if if people were traveling to see family or whatever to have a half day on that Monday and then have the Christmas you know the winter break off so um this this is the the proposed draft for uh both years uh one question that came up after so unfortunately it was right after the calendar committee was about potentially reinstating the uh February break to a full week I think that'd be something that we would want to get data from our staff and parents on before we were to reinstitute something like that maybe for the 24 25 school year I know that we made some adjustments this year to the professional development calendar with delayed opening professional development rather than exclusively early dismissal and we have committed to surveying our parents about that I think it's a good uh piece to add the is there an interest in a full week for February when we survey our Stu our staff and parents again about our calendar the spring so I think that's pretty comprehensive overview of the calendar yeah and I I want to apologize miss hearing and I meant to turn over to you was you were delivered report I was thinking I had Dr song so uh before and after the most there's anything you want to add or touch upon you certainly welcome to my dad I just I just wanted to um thank Dr Solon for um addressing that parents email to us um because there really isn't correct me if I'm wrong there really isn't a procedure for putting things forth but if you know they did exactly the right thing they just emailed the superintendent and said what about this and then that gives us the opportunity it takes a while right it doesn't happen immediately but um to put it out in a survey as as because we need a wider audience to take a look at that but thank you for um mentioning that sure is there a motion but we actually have uh wants to make it I moved at the Cheshire Board of Education approves that's not it sorry excuse me I move that the Cheshire Board of Education adopts the 20 24 25 proposed draft school calendar recommended by the calendar committee I reckon we start with uh no I no I'm going to start with the earlier one the one for next year uh I recommend that the Cheshire Board of Education adopts the 2023-24 school calendar as presented is there a second Mr White just wait seconds discussion on the motion Andrew could I just ask what is um so on this motion I guess on the 23 what is the methodology of going to school before Labor Day can I just I mean every year that's what everyone talks about it's like oh my gosh we have to go back to school before Labor Day what like why I just know as a kid we always went back to school after Labor Day so going to school for those two days does it help to get everyone acclimated and then go in for the full month of September is that right there's two two uh thoughts behind that uh indeed it is really helpful to have students in for a short week before we get to school in Earnest because schedules routines ironing out Kinks for the schedules for you know four thousand plus students it's beneficial to have a little bit of time to work that out before students go back but I would say that perhaps what was the bigger driver of the before Labor Day approach was you know I think we just celebrated the the 10-year anniversary of that massive snowstorm where things were closed and and I I remember we were very close to going into July and so there were adjustments made at the time I know around that February break reducing it to a couple of days when it used to be a full week and then also uh I can't guarantee but I I want to say there was an adjustment backing it up a little bit into August to ensure that you know if there were indeed more snow days again that because nobody wants their kids out of school at the end of June it's a real problem for high school seniors who are going to college transition programs it's an issue for kids that are going to camps it's so it's like how do we sneak it feather it right in the right spot and when you don't know what Mother Nature is going to throw at you so those are both considerations but I think this year if we can get some survey data we can certainly include that as a component how do you feel about before or after and then we have to balance those what might ultimately be competing uh desires yeah all right thanks building off of that yeah Dr Solon would you say that the the staff has to come in for three days prior to the students as well and so there's yeah they made it's really more than two days it's it's really a week for the staff I mean it you know they may be starting before Labor day even if we move the students after Labor Day and you know Labor Day always falls on Monday obviously so that would be a four day week which isn't outrageous either um or we could start the Wednesday after Labor Day if we wanted to I mean but I I think you know getting feedback from the people that are most affected and are teaching and uh parents uh so that'll help us I think I earned some of these things up make more informed decision anyway absolutely uh any other questions on this promotional okay yeah just a comment I think I may be the only one in this boat Adam may still be in it summer camp getting it I mean the summer camps right now so my kids are in first and third grade and they're lined up the school schedule is lined up well with the summer camps around here that's just another factor that would have to be considered in I think in moving the dates around um also the I don't know how this would impact it necessarily but you were talking about with regard to graduating high school seniors who are going off to do you know for new adventures Connecticut in general is late for the country or the Northeast is so when you're talking about other I know like I have connections to Florida Texas and Arizona and they're all I think they start as early as like mid-july and run until mid-may so it's just another consideration um I do have one question on here I don't know if this is what we're voting on it but the calendar committee didn't touch the professional development part I see a professional development day of March 14th I I kind of like those three day weekends that's another issue that we debated um about you know staff attendance and uh student attendance and do we do uh middle of the week or uh Friday uh and what you'll see is a kind of a compromise in here so the 23 24 it falls in the middle of the week uh well Thursday and then uh on the 24 25 it falls on Friday so I think it was a bit of a compromise we'll see how it plays out we'll have data from this year um you know it pains me to say that PD Day is on March 17th which is a Friday but more prominently in my house the St Patrick's Day but we'll see how it goes anyway I vote for I vote for the three-day weekend over the Thursday PD day that was going back and forth yeah Stop Those there and so uh that's what was proposed for this coming school year um so we'll write I'm going to write down that Tim White prefers a three-day weekend so account committee next seriousness everyone's going back and forth that we try to do a long weekend so fans can plan better and try to weigh a balance against professional development it's just it's uh I'm finding that as we and certainly that's not the reason but we we're adding more professionals at on time because we have to and you know that's starting to really work into the weeks uh where it's more productive so we'll see what pans out in the next motion when the community this time next year finalizes that calendar we'll see what happens but uh all I want to say is that the Labor Day thing you know when I first got on the board uh used to hear more about why not start school after Labor Day weekend it gives families time to planner vacations and come back fresh and you know um and I think we were starting after Labor Day around back then or just thereabouts when I first got here as Dr Stone mentioned with the weather issues increasing professional development time and the fact that school year is going well into June we had to pull back and pull back February break So lately it's I haven't doesn't mean those out there we were here less about Labor Day weekend start but more about the February break so anyway this is going to come up again the calendar committee for 24.25 so stay tuned we'll see what we can do don't know say it obviously as we push more into June we're pushing more in June yes I we're willing to adjust but anyway the point is not as it's taken lightly so sure yeah right yeah I'm not sure if I'm not sure if I got mentioned when we're going through this uh the professional development days we were talking about the holidays but just so people out in TV Land know what we have I see five professional development days three are before school starts and then we've got one in the spring semester one in the fall semester I think the fall semester is very straightforward it's election day so we can't really have the parking lots full anyway with teacher cars it's just an easy thing to avoid and then the last professional development day one out of five is what I'm asking about basically but the others all make complete sense to me why they would fall in those places thank you good so unless there's a and yet scanner I'm sorry I forgot about that um I I just have one last question it's sort of I guess an out there question because it it's a statistic we we would may never even get there um but that uh has to do with Juneteenth uh June 19th um because um that's a state holiday starting this year I think and if we had lots of snow days we could get there uh does the school treat that as a day off or do so to extend the school year longer or how how is that treated so it's a little bit of a tricky question in the sense that uh it's a holiday in the same sense that uh Veterans Day is a holiday so we haven't made any decisions on that yet uh in the on the school side of the street and you know they're also collective bargaining implications for those days um so I guess if we were to be in school I think if if somebody were to ask me tomorrow if you you're you have school on Juneteenth what are you going to do I think we would recognize it uh with the same sort of um respect and reverence that we provide Veterans Day uh and acknowledge it in the school that way as of today but you know subject to change certainly as we go through collective bargaining and talk to the town about how they handle it and stuff like that I'm just do you happen to know like the last time we got to June 19th I believe that's Juneteenth I it is and I don't know off the top of my head the last time this has crossed my mind but I was like you know what we that's not a common thing in the least bit it wasn't at least I don't think so it wasn't recently I remember when we got to it but it was back when my kids 10 years ago and it was it was horrible going to school at the end of June oh it's about air conditioning it's not even it's just that it's just like this is summer now it's summer vacation it was bad great questions um so the current motion is that the Cheshire board education adopts the 2023-24 SKU uh yeah school calendar as presented um all those in favor please raise your hand and as unanimous thank you Miss Harrigan do you have another motion it's gonna look familiar because I already read it once I move that the Cheshire Board of Education adopts the 2024-25 proposed draft school calendar recommended by the calendar committee for a second I'll second it discussion now this is the proposed draft well I mean I'm sorry no I I'm sorry I just uh I I can't support going back to school on June 9th I think that that's crazy um well you're you're going the last day of school is June 9th right so you're going to leave school on Friday June 6th have the weekend and the last day of school is Monday after the weekend and you're going to school for one day and then it's summer vacation I mean keep in mind what a waste of time that would be if we have zero snow days okay and I have 20 years of Records it's uh incredibly rare that we would have zero snow days the other thing is you know based on the conversation we just had I think there are a lot of other considerations that we'll be making at next and our plan is to meet in November to give a little bit more uh lead time on the calendar uh the you know we'll probably make another adjustments I'd kind of be surprised if it shakes out on those adjustments that we're still on June 9th for this draft this is just okay all right I'm right okay all right the word draft was on I didn't hear that thank you Andrew yes yeah um if if February break was uh to be considered to be extended out would you be taking away uh time from April break are you to be tacking on days to the end of the year I would not be taking time away I wouldn't propose that um because in our experience there are more people who travel on April break than there are on February break in addition some of our spring athletic teams travel on April break to go play baseball lacrosse and softball or golf like in South Carolina or something so that would put a monkey wrench in our high school sports too so I think I I would keep that April break and adjust in some direction around if if there was a real commitment to February break but I think we have to be careful about how we ask questions in a survey do you want a full February break sure do you realize that we're either adding days in June or you know you're coming back earlier then maybe not so sure so I think we'd put that information out uh and share the implications of some of these adjustments to make sure people have a full picture of what they're actually you know selecting thank you sure okay thank you and then one other the one other thing I recall from year one of covid so March 2020 uh we had a discussion whether we were going to be in school in April or not and you said you wanted the kids to stay in school what exactly that meant you know sort of remote doing something versus not now part I think that was for structure um partly for mental health the kids just it's meltedness it's built into what they know so I don't think the I don't know that the February changing from a four and a half day weekend to a full week off really impacts that but I think taking that away would I imagine that would be not great for kids who are expecting that sure good point Tim thank you who new calendar committee was so interesting well I know right it's it's uh it's great and I think well you know I think a big part of this is now with all of us having or had kids go through you know we're you know we get to also see firsthand now um especially those are kids in the school system right now the pros and cons so all I want to say is this is a draft calendar if approved tonight it'll be published On The Board website where everybody can see it and as Dr Sullen mentioned starting sooner this year it would surprise me start getting comments after Clint's meeting we can start working on the final draft sometime between November and next February of 25 24.

CHS is providing instructional support for grade 11 students who did not meet meet benchmarks and CHS continues to engage in curriculum revisions as well as strong collaborative practices regarding instruction and data collection and Analysis to support continued student growth and achievement uh we had a couple of new textbook recommendations presented to us Lisa bernabe gave an overview of the recommendation for calculus at the high school calculus early transcendental eighth grade Edition textbook um eighth edition I'm sorry I knew it was High School we have probably probably have a couple of students doing eighth grade calculus but this is a high school textbook this recommendation is for a new addition to the to an AP and ECE course UConn requires this text on their Calculus BC syllabus and some hard copies will be available but students will have access to the digital text at all times a second textbook is was presented to us by Matthew Swanson he gave an overview of the recommendation for the comparative government stories of the World by Karen waffles the text will be used in the half year AP comparative government course this text is the only text available that is directly aligned with the college board's thematic structure and each theme has its own chapter the design makes it easy to read to use and to take notes by the students and the tasks mirror the rigor of the AP exam free response questions so those two textbooks were will be passed were voted to be passed along to the full board for approval and of course they will spend their two-week period on public review then we had some informational conversations uh the CHS scheduling committee update uh Dr Gad also gave us an update on the scheduling committee for students and staff surveys were administered and reviewed by the committee and we're looking at the benefits of block scheduling and also seeking ways to slightly increase the frequency of classes so the subcommittee is drafting questions for parents for additional input and feedback and then the committee anticipates making a recommendation by late February or early March we also talked about the grade six through eight math textbook review Uh Kevin Hanlon gave an update on the work of the grades six through eight math textbook textbook and ad hoc committee the committee has met several times since the fall including most recently earlier in the day of our meeting for this most recent meeting the group observed and debriefed a lesson from Illustrated math which is one of the texts being vetted so the goal of the group is to try to get the most accurate understanding of how a text would actually support learning with the students in the district before making any recommendations the committee will continue to be and possibly bring recommendations to the Boe curriculum committee in March or April other informational items um we got an update on the science of reading waiver um Ms Solano Mr Hanlon gave an update on the district's work to submit a waiver to the state to continue to use cheshire's current curriculum um for k-3 reading this waiver is part of the state right to read legislation as part of that legislation districts need to make one of three decisions and uh the first is to state approved reading programs thus by the 2023-24 school year which is coming right up upon us the second is to indicate the district intends to adopt a state approved reading program but delay until 2024-25 school year and the third which Cheshire has chosen is to submit a waiver to the state showing evidence that the current District curriculum has all of the components expressed through science of reading legislation the waiver is due to the state by February 28th and a small team is working I'm adding tirelessly to to draft The Narrative Report with artifacts and appendices directly from the curriculum to report on required student performance data in early reading indicators and grades k-3 and to submit an action plan for continued Improvement so all of that is being done and um I personally would like to thank our staff for all the work that goes into putting together that waiver finally we had some out-of-state overnight field trips presented to us by Maureen Reed Dr Reed and um Marlene Solano um I believe it was the cheer group going to Ocean City Maryland a CHS group going to Boston Massachusetts for model un thank you and um three of our sixth grades going to Nature's classrooms and uh that's the overview of the report that I have for tonight thank you Ann any questions on the quick report as soon as there are none we're going to move on to finance Mr grippo thank you Mr chair um hand over the report to Mr maciano thank you Mr Griffo good evening ladies and gentlemen the board members do have the finance report and I will provide a summary for January so we've completed seven months of the budget year and our budget is um still looking fine no significant changes from last month's report I did put a kind of a long-winded explanation of where we are with our electricity uh price locks but because it's been warm we benefited and that we're not locked our December to January electric rates came in at about 8.7 cents average and if you remember the price lock that expired was 7.8 cents per kilowatt hour or so looking pretty good also I was able to lock the remaining accounts that we have our larger Accounts at 7.9 cents per kilowatt hour through November so if you look at where we are Blended from February March through November we're set at about nine 0.16 cents per kilowatt hour this gives us time to continue to shop to find a better long-term rate the long-term rates are still kind relatively High you know we're a little over 10 cents per kilowatt hour it's come down from 15 cents where we were getting bid prices in December January but I don't think we're quite there yet you know we're still working with our consultant so hopefully between now and um early summer we can find an electricity lock that will take us for the next two to three years you know as far as the the rest of the budget we are still keeping that 50 cap on non-payroll expenditures through the month of February but based on where we are right now I think we'll be able to lift that probably to 70 percent to start getting ready for some of the summer projects and purchases we need to make and that's really the long and short of the finance piece of the report Mr grippo I can do medical benefits if you're ready are there any questions on this report or go ahead thank you also the board members have the medical benefits update which there is some good news you know for a change this month January's claims were 795 000 as we expected January Begins the new HSA plan year so employees are paying for their medical expenses through their um the deductibles first so the claims did come down we budget a million dollars per month so because claims were below the million dollars we were able to increase the Reserve balance by 204 000 this month and that brought the Reserve balance up above a million dollars again at a million eighty nine thousand so we have about 1.09 months of claims in reserve um our average claims for the year are in at about 1.18 million we're expecting about 1 million per month so if the trend continues for another couple of months we'll be closer to the budget that we had for medical claims so as always we hope that that continues with medical claims and that's the medical benefits report any questions on the medical benefits okay see we uh we had plenty of questions during our budget uh uh hearing so I think we're kind of questioned out for now because we I don't think we really found any satisfactory answers there either so I'm still recovering from all the questions so we'll just hold tight I guess um all right um Mr chair that concludes the finance thank you Adam thank you Mr massiana up next is uh personnel thank you Mr chair um tonight is really a special night for me uh professionally and personally because uh we have a very tight-knit administrative team filled with really uh competent and dedicated professionals and uh to know that one competent and dedicated professional in in Steve's your phone is retiring those are exceptionally big shoes to fill and I know that at some point down the road more about that um but this evening we have the opportunity to appoint his replacement and um it speaks volumes about the person that we're putting forward tonight that we certainly believe that he can step in and not be Steve to phone um but be the next generation of leadership for athletics at Cheshire high school and within our community I don't have to tell you that there is a deep passion for athletics in our community and the person we're pointing tonight is a product of that passion and shares that passion for uh all things Cheshire High School so without further Ado I'd like to invite Dr Gad to the podium to introduce our candidate good evening indeed my honor to speak on behalf of John pericino our hiring committee's recommendation to fill the position of athletic director as you know John has served as a physical education teacher at the secondary level a coach throughout his career in Cheshire and has spent the last six years serving as Dodd Middle School's assistant principal where he has distinguished himself as a trusted level-headed and deeply committed leader the committee was impressed by John's deep regard for Cheshire public schools and the Cheshire community John approached the interview process in the same thorough and comprehensive manner he has used in approaching his work in the Cheshire schools over the past 17 years he connects everything he does to further our district goals of developing our students as complex thinkers and developing students who are ethical poised and socially and emotionally skilled not only is he a professional in our district but he is a product of our school system graduating in the class of 2000.

we've worked to increase in particular our high school open Choice seat availability for two reasons we have a little bit more flexibility as our enrollment has dropped a little bit at the high school over the last several years we knew that was coming but the other really important piece at the high school level is that in conversations with them our students from New Haven have to get up at an ungodly hour the one if they have one bus it traverses the whole city to pick students up one van and so we added additional students to split and make multiple runs which gave them another 20 minutes 25 minutes and and that's really powerful when you're a 14 year old trying to sleep and you're here circadian rhythms and all that so that's our Aces update there I want to just remind folks that we had a Middle School showcase scheduled for the first Thursday in March that has been canceled and rescheduled because we wanted to accommodate that evening there is the Cheshire Chamber of Commerce annual dinner at which point we recognized the Teacher of the Year is as well as the firemen the policeman of the year and the business of the year as well as some other recognitions at night it's a it's a great night for our business community and for the municipal services and Cheshire so we look forward to that evening uh as well I believe it's Arya does that sound right all right so um and then finally you know or not finally I guess but the uh Next Generation School building committee a I I can't believe the pace at which we're moving and the amount of work that we're doing uh I appreciate you know Mr chair are you sharing that you know Mr Asiana and I have invested a lot of time in that process reviewing rfps rfqs uh for the two different projects we're not allowed to do them one for both we have to do two independent ones which means reviewing and checking to 30 page rfqs if it will you know for whatever the you know position is so right now we are in a process where we're interviewing four architectural firms that's the most that you can invite back statutorily uh the 28th of February and first of March we'll be conducting those interviews hopefully to have a firm selected shortly thereafter and they will be appointed uh the contract will be approved by the council in mid-march at the same time we're soliciting uh requests for qualifications for owner's reps those are firms that will represent the town through the process and kind of coordinate the work between the construction manager the architect all the planning that has to happen I think that'll hopefully take some of the load off but uh I know we're still building two schools so it's a lot and then finally we'll be moving for a construct manager that's a position where they're in charge of really the day-to-day site work at each building and making sure that the plans are followed and the code is met and coordination with the town officials uh to make sure that the building is going up as it was intended to so those are some of the happenings uh you know other some crazy stuff like today is uh Weber Foss knocked I'm sure I'm just telling you what you already know of course but that's um an event that celebrates like the carnival if you will of Rhineland uh for Israeli women uh can go up and cut the ties off guys so uh there were some stunned teenage faces when I went into German class pretending not to know what was going on and getting my tie cut off today and Dan tartarelli I want to shout give him a shout out the assistant principal at the high school who did the same thing so sacrificing some ties for our kids entertainment is the least we could do anyway CHS math team third place this season I want to congratulate them for a great effort there were 18 students on the team and they've qualified to compete for the state championship in math uh April 4th so good luck to those guys I took the liberty of sharing with the board our Cape board recognitions Awards I'm really proud of the fact that uh through the board's work this past year we were recognized by Cabe for the first time at least that you know I've been in the district that's 18 years and um I just wanted to just pass along the criteria again if we were looking to continue that I know a number of people participated in the uh the cab annual capscape conference again and some other things but just if you know you see anything on here that jumps out to you uh there's still time throughout the remainder of this year where we could qualify for some of these recognitions again and it's really uh a bar it's a standard for high performing school boards in our state and I'm proud of the fact that we like I said meant that that standard last year and it just gives you another glimpse into what that is last and certainly not least I want to thank Mr Martelli for inviting me for the um Economic Development Council meeting that was held last month uh I had the benefit of kind of sharing some of the things that we do as a school system as it relates to trades in particular uh there was some really good conversation that took place and I can update Mr Martell I know you have a meeting on Tuesday that we are holding a a round table for Cheshire high school students on March 29th at 9 00 a.m in our library if anybody's interested in any of you are interested in attending in that round table we have trade schools but I also was able to connect with Jason Viennese who's one of the owners of Richard Chevrolet and I recall the conversation we had had basically pre-covered where he was in the process of building a substantial automotive center for mechanics and the the challenge he has in securing really good mechanics and I know that's that's a top dollar position I also spoke to Doug Johnson uh at Marion manufacturing who shared that same desire to have talented mechanically oriented students and I was talking to one of our 2018 graduates actually is as early as this evening before the meeting about him attending he works at Marion manufacturing and is thrilled to attend and he was sharing that you know I left CHS and went to Naugatuck community and I think he was surprised to hear that we have now brought Naugatuck Valley Community College classes credit bearing classes to CHS and so we're trying to work with our community and I'll be sharing more information about some more extraordinary efforts we're making to connect into manufacturing and things that we're doing to support our local businesses but also continue to provide multiple Pathways for our students to find success after Cheshire high school so that was that was really some cool work and I'm so grateful for Jason and Doug and Richard Chevrolet and Marion manufacturing are constantly supporting us and I hope that they find that to be a symbiotic relationship so I just wanted to pass that information along that's it right questions oh alternative Pathways post high school thank you for working on that that is incredibly important thank you yeah it's it's certainly not a Jeff swollen initiative I mean there's a team uh Marlene and you know Kevin is k through eight but certainly involved in everything that we're doing as it relates to extending things and then there are numerous other people like Sean McEwen mayor gadd and so it's definitely a team effort and we're sensitive to that I'm really glad that we're we're making progress there absolutely thank you yes um I just wanted to comment that um I remember when I first came on the board um I asked an unnamed staff member I'll say like that I I asked that person um well what if a student at the age of 16 16 is dabbling with the idea of of going into uh uh you know a technical field or a manufacturing field um what would they uh do at the high school and at that time would that was back into that made us 2018.

so congratulations thank you Andrew Tim yeah thank you for this congratulations I just want to make uh two small points one this is really a ceremonial vote superintendent hires and fires he's in charge of that for everybody superintendent reports to the board of ed so I appreciate having these votes as a show of confidence but I just want the voters to understand how the system is set up we're not we're not really hiring you as a board um or yeah selecting you um the superintendent does uh and the second point I had a separate conversation with the superintendent and just in general for people to know I was curious about it in terms of hiring externally versus promoting internally within the Cheshire Public Schools when you look at all administrative educational staff and what I'll call more administrative staff operational staff HR Finance over the past five to ten years it's been I think a little bit more than 50 percent have been internal promotions and then the balance being external hires I don't know what the Right Mix is but I am a firm believer that it's good to do both I really do believe in in promoting internally I think this is great I want people to believe that they can get promoted within the system but I also think there's there's a balance where you can bring in people with fresh eyes new ideas and I think that the superintendent is doing a really good job in balancing that um getting both groups of people uh into his into the Cheshire Public Schools so for that thank you as well thank you Tim anyone else otherwise I I did oh what what uh Andrew and Tim has stated and um again I think John's a great person for a role I know John since I've been on the board of ed and he's spoken very highly uh throughout the community in the school system uh isn't a lot of respect by his peers students and colleagues so I'm I'm happy that it was a lot of interest in the search like great candidates both internal next terminal and um you know I have confidence in the process at the end of the day you know the best candidate was chosen so I'll definitely support this and I thank you everyone being a search committee and Andrew for representing the board and community so mostly on the comments or questions um the motion is as follows that the Cheshire Board of Education appoints John pericino to the position of athletic director effective July 1st 2023 further that John parasino is compensated in accordance with a collective bargaining agreement between the board and the Cheshire administrative Personnel all those in favor please raise your hands it is unanimous motion passes thank you congratulations [Applause] I bought it completed a picture yeah thank you [Applause] up next is our planning committee update Mr Martelli and Mr Messi and I suppose all right so we met back on Monday evening February the 13th um just give me one second yeah cut back tough act to follow um so a couple things I'm gonna do my best going through this um

and Junior High honored Junior High and High School honor band and choir I also attended the seventh grade showcase for Sycamore Junior High School and 7th grade Extravaganza at Walker Junior High School is a great way to see what our our schools offer for our upcoming seventh graders I also attended College Signing Day for Western High School for the football team even though I'm a high school grad um and I want to congratulate the extremely wonderful five high school students that signed to their respective colleges and will be continuing their higher education and their high school and their football career I attended the Anaheim Black History Parade along with the auhsc black lives matters task force and the black student unions at Katella High School Savannah high school and Laura high school was a great event of diversity and celebration in the city of Anaheim and I attended the field dedication along with trustee Reynold Trejo at Katella High School honoring the legacy of Coach Mack who was a coach for over 20 years um I also attended along with Dr freed who is an alumni of Katella high school so it was great to have him there and support um I participated in the first lcap night with over 200 participants I want to thank everyone that came together to put that together the students parents staff and community members that joined us and a special shout out to Mr Saldivar and Dr Hernandez for kicking off the process and Dr Marino for his insightful presentation that he made to everyone there lcap and a plug the next day is March 9th for anyone that wants to participate in our process it's a great time we welcome your input and we welcome you to the district I also attended the lighter World International night at Magnolia High School along with trustee Piercy it was a great event with the cross culture of performances and then recently attended the Anaheim secondary Council of ptas their founder Day celebration which was yesterday so it was great that we passed a resolution honoring them um and then just some other um I got had a great meet and greet with the Education Services team so I was really grateful to me everyone on staff and learn what they do across the district and I have made site visits to Anaheim high school Sycamore Junior High School Ball Junior High School and Magnolia High School and at Ball Junior High School they um I got got to see the Joan career pathway and they let me practice flying the Drone which was really awesome it's a lot harder than it looks it's excellent career pathway for our students probably not my career pathway but it was a great experience um and then this morning attended the topping off ceremony at Magnolia High School for the new cyber security and administration building and that concludes my report thank you that's all you've done that's all I've done wow that's great she's got to start pacing herself it's been a lot of fun it's a great indoctrination and by the way even though you're a graduate from one of our high schools I know yeah you have to be 50 50 if you know yeah I represent them you have to be careful just just kidding conspiracy okay I didn't do half as much okay oh well I did go to Lexington sixth grade orientation and it was really interesting um a lot of kids a lot of kids uh there and they they did a good job you know moving them around campus and showing them all the different areas and they had them in the uh multi-purpose I mean the gymnasium and the choir and the band were performing and then they had drama things going in the multi-purpose room it was really cute um I love to see all these Junior High kids I still love them they're just they're funny so um I went to Western High School's feel Improvement for the for a community meeting to kind of inform the community and that was very uh very interesting unfortunately there weren't a lot of the community there I was hoping there would have been more but they're not worried except for a few so that was good to see I went to an insurance committee meeting and we had quite a bit of information at the insurance committee you know we're doing okay um for a District that's self-insured we're hanging in there and doing well I'm very I'm very proud of our insurance I I think we're doing great uh I then the next day I went to a graduation committee meeting uh we are changing uh thanks to uh Allison you know she's done a great job of getting this all worked together as far as new graduation coordinate coordinating for all the schools that not all the schools are doing it this year she's letting him phase in but we're going to medallions instead of cords or sashes so that they'll have a school collar or Sash and all these little medallions now so you know instead of you know I I used to go up to some of these kids and pull each chord and say huh which one is this which one is this so this way you can read and it says exactly what best to get Anna to stop pulling the cords on the kids that's how we're doing that but they're all look at all these chords so um and then uh I went to the Magnolia International light up the that was absolutely delightful they did such a great job really really well done and I really enjoyed it with the weather was good because we had it out in the you know in the what do you call that Amphitheater yeah it's an Amphitheater in the middle of the you know the big quad that is beautiful now um and it it The Sound was great the kids did great it was enjoyable and there were a lot of people and it was so much better than necessarily being inside in the gym or whatever very very well done uh and then I also went to the topping of the cyber security building now I didn't I never heard of topping this was a new thing for me um we've had other buildings built and in the time I've been on the board and I've never heard of a topping but it was excellent because they when they put the last beam up in the building they saved it first for everybody so we could put our signatures an inspirational words or whatever and it said Magnolia and I have to tell you this because there was a tree sitting on top of the beam on one side and the U.S flag on the other side and there was a story behind the tree I I didn't get it straight but it must be just a not a fable but a saying that you can't build a building higher than the tops of the trees so to make sure this building isn't higher than the top of the trees they put a tree on top of the beam and then they secured it on there and then they had the flag on the other end and a rope so it was really interesting to see this because then they the this huge crane picked up the beam because is that a three-story building um and they guided it over to where two men were up there to put it in place but this 30-foot cord a rope was hanging there but one guy was holding on until the crane lifted it too high and then they went over the building and then they had to get it somewhere where that rope finally got to the guy sitting up there and it was a little windy so it took a little bit of time but then he finally guided it in and then they put it in place with the tree still in place it was very cute it was very nice and I have to say this it was very nice of Erickson Hall they had Refreshments for all of us afterwards it was very very nice so that was an excellent I loved it I'm waiting for the next topping [Laughter] and I think that's about all that I've done this month well I would like to say that I attended via phone on the for the discipline committee and I'll be glad when that can be done in real life I think it's wonderful to be able to see people's expressions and hear face to face what they go through in teaching today and the insurance committee was wonderful and I I'd just like to thank you Dr nian it's a tremendous organization and a lot of work and thought goes into it and what we do for our employees is remarkable and I'm grateful and um I just wanted to say to you girls out here from ROP my very my very first board meeting I think was 25 26 years ago I signed on with ROP as with you all 14 years and the very first meeting was over on La Palma and Gilbert and they had something like a thirty thousand dollar item to replace the roof and here I am a new board member and a lot I was the baby on the group the other people were much older than I and I was thinking about this place because I had visited all the offices and met everybody and I thought it was remarkable because they were in a dump and it was really deplorable and nobody ever complained which shocked me so when it came for the motion to do the thirty thousand dollars for a roof as a new board member I slapped my hand down I said don't anybody huff and puff because this place is going to collapse and that was the beginning of change over there and I learned something very valuable and it brought where we are today and the years that I served on that board was a total wonderful totally wonderful learning experience I worked with wonderful people and how we opened new programs found new locations and it was such a breath of fresh air for me in education so I just want to thank you all because you're carrying on and the general public I don't think really has a clue what ROP does but you are so valued and I just want to thank you for that and when I came on the school board a number of years ago I asked Dr Billings if we could post the golden rule in every single classroom and today when I look around at the world and I listened to the news and I look at the world that you are facing I think the Golden Rule should be in every single room again maybe signage isn't that valuable I don't know but as a reminder that we treat others the way we would want to be treated it's very simplistic think before you act so I just want to say that I hope we can get those signs up because over the years when I go to classrooms I see they've been taken down and I just want to thank everyone for all the work you do education today is very very difficult the general public doesn't understand it and I hear all the criticisms in the news and I just feel so lucky be with good people that have high integrity are honest and really care about their jobs so I just want to say thank you thank you Miss Smith for acknowledging our our ROP partner I always say that ROP is auhsd's you know right right hand or right arm and we appreciate you and I appreciate serving on the board um and so I attended my ROP meeting where we celebrated our employees of the year and teacher of the year and it was a really nice fun celebration although there was a big flood we had to kind of adjust we didn't have to adjust we just showed up but all of you had to adjust to some flooding and I'm glad that's all sheared up and taken care of but we we just we just are flexible right and and they're wonderful so thank you for acknowledging them I attended my geselpa meeting just last night and I cheated a little bit but I went on the um and thank you whoever sent that to me the lcap invite so that I could watch the lcat meeting snug at home it was it was cold that night so I appreciated um Robert you did a fantastic job I think I heard there were over 300 people that's amazing amazing a wonderful start yes Rachel yes fantastic fantastic so I was there in in spirit and in the airwaves or whatever you call it um oh gosh I'm dating myself all right so um I also attended um as my colleague said the field dedication for um coach Tim Mack learned a lot more about him um and uh was was uh he was just an amazing um teacher and coach and you can tell that everyone really still misses him um in his presence and he was a special ed teacher and Incorporated the Athletics and the team along with the students and I loved hearing about that you don't always mirror special ed and Athletics together and so I was glad that he he did that and really probably influenced a lot of students in that way to give back and to maybe acknowledge uh see students in a different way as before uh so that was really um very very meaningful and I was privileged to to uh to do that and I was also um excited and privileged to attend um LA Opera with Gilbert High School students someone couldn't go and so I got invited Sunita Prasad she is a speech language pathologist and you never know who can has an opportunity for our students in auhsd and that's what I love about our school district she is a speech pathologist and she loves Opera she has an associate associate in the higher Epsilon of the of the organization and she happened to see an opportunity for our students to actually go to a rehearsal address your rehearsal and it's it's a you know a drawing and so she filled out all the paperwork um called um Dr Laura and said hey if we get this can we get a bus and he said for sure go for it and they were picked to um to go see an opera I can't remember the first opera but the one that I went to was the second Opera they got picked twice and that's never happened before but I happen to think our kids were absolutely fabulous in the audience and they behaved well and they listened and they were encouraged and enthusiastic about it so I think they got chosen twice but we got to see The Marriage of Figaro and they didn't stop so it was a full Opera and before the Opera they had an educational talk and so they got to meet the star of the of the show beforehand and she she was really in enchanting and so of course you know when she gets out there and then sings for the students they were just enchanted with her and then they also had someone that was involved with the media and marketing so they got to hear that that side of it so it was a really wonderful experience on the bus to LA but I think it was just very enchanting the students just really had a wonderful time and she's going to keep putting their name in the in the Hat and hoping that they get chosen the students that were chosen to go they they raised their hand they wanted to go so it was a great opportunity for them it's just something that you wouldn't think they would get a chance to do otherwise so the topper ceremony was amazing I got all the footage and I know John you got the footage too so hopefully we can get that on video somewhere to see that but yeah let's do more of that it was really fun and exciting exciting to see that and and thank you to everyone who put that together it was fun for us but I know all the workers there that um you know we're working on that project it was really uplifting for them to put that last beam in there so and that's all I have thank you thank you well Miss Guerrero and I attended the budget meeting oh that's right I had a budget meeting thank you yes thank you Dr Diane for your presentation had to give another brownie Point um and at the end the meeting we had a very uh it's towards the end had a really good discussion about attendance uh lack thereof uh how the tennis ratios have have dropped and how costly it is for Art District but all districts when the students are not sitting in their seats or they don't show up that it has become very costly which we all know where that goes when we don't have the the money to pay for things we have to make adjustments down the road so unfortunately so we're we're looking forward to some programs to be able to get the attendance up and I know the district is working uh expeditiously to do that to help mitigate our our futures lack of money I attended the district Honor Choir show and the honor band and our vafa program is doing great the kids do great it's amazing what what our band directors do and at the ROP meeting we recognized the employees of the year for ROP and a couple of them were from our our schools Mr McNulty from Anaheim high school and the construction and Miss uh Hernandez from the Gilbert and she's in the business department so uh it was and then Jose Lara was there who was there to support his student his employee and then we also re-recognized even though we were at the school to recognize him but the ROP nominee for 2024 uh Orange County department of education teacher of the year uh June Quinta Cuenca of the biotechnology pathway at Oxford so he was obviously very excited about being there and and having that recognition so with that said yes uh would you like to finish out 20 10 points oh yes absolutely thank you okay so uh there is a top eight we're allowed to submit for nine but there is a four-way tie for nine so if you'd like we can just submit eight I can let you know the names is that okay that's good yeah okay that's fine so it would be uh Jackie philbeck Bonnie castry Carrie Flanders Lauren klatzker Susie Swartz uh Michelle Bartow Leandra blades and rodia sheet very good now we have to vote on that yes yes do you have a motion in a second any more discussion all in favor say aye aye opposed five zero and what was the number again ten point 28.

um the answer was well then they would have to go to a technical school and I think that now the answer is uh that there are opportunities here to learn and get to know things before you had to make such a big decision if you wanted to to further your career in that so I think that's a great step forward thank you and certainly in the technical schools remain a option for our students so we're not we're not looking to remove that option but we are looking to force students who want to stay at Cheshire high school but still continue a mechanical and I know Andrew is very close to your heart you know personally and we want to be able to offer uh internships and this is where Partnerships with our local companies are so beneficial so I'm glad that we've evolved since that time the record is that I I a nice long conversation today with Lindsay DeAngelis over Rochester High School um and in my other role with the town at Economic Development um I'm just glad that we're able to I'm able to help you guys and get these people in there because we have a lot of really great and this isn't like some sort of self-promotion for the town of everybody um we have a lot of really great businesses here and I don't think a lot of them have been connecting to the community and so like I've taken that very seriously to get them to the high school and I think that it's paying off like I mean there's people here like just today um Creative Dimensions which is in the industrial park they make all the desks for all the sports programs and sets everything that you watch and it has everything from design all the way up through fabrication and he's towards Chester high school and he's ready to hopefully work to replace the ram TV desk something that came from a major sporting event so I mean there's these really great connections right here in our own backyard so I'll throw out another plug for Rebel marketing uh on April 1st April Fool's Day no accident we're holding our treasure Ed Foundation trivia contest I know Adam's done it he's religious about it and you know it's not don't just take it from me take it from one of our competitors it is an awesome time it is so much fun like I do a lot of goofy things like jumping in cold water or whatever dressing all sorts of crazy ways and making my friends do that too but this is so much fun if you please go to the cheshired foundation website check it out Rebel marketing is hosting this year um it's an adult only event you are allowed to bring your own Beverages and snacks and everything people have a great time so please check it out yeah is I'm not sure if you mentioned it is there uh could you give an idea of when we might expect to see ground break on the buildings just I mean should people expect to happen this spring next spring summer not like generally speaking definitely not this spring sure the design process itself when the architect is engaged is roughly 18 months so after 18 months we're then you know I'm sure at the end of that process securing contractors uh so I I don't know been 20 24 months Maybe so maybe that this spring but two Springs we're breaking ground okay so 25 with a uh opening in Fall of 26.

okay so if we're starting in let's say call it March April of 2025 we would then open schools in September 26th okay three and a half years from now yep okay roughly thank you it goes by fast foreign people are going to be wondering oh for sure yeah we voted for that where check out you know another plug check out our website school modernization there's a band at the bottom yeah you can always click on that link it's updated regularly it's got a link to all of our meeting minutes everything I uh does it have a link to upcoming meetings uh it well it has the agendas which shows you the dates of all the meetings gotcha and a meeting schedule yeah but they meet regularly on Tuesdays every Thursday basically tonight is a rare night that we don't have a meeting which worked out for Ben and I because I think I think I ended up going to the town website to get it because I came to one of the meetings a week or two ago I looked at the schools and I don't think it had upcoming meetings on it that was easy for me to find at least just as a side note well yeah we'll make that easier more accommodating I thank you I just want to say uh Noni is Adam a fierce competitor and trivia but to your right yes and is I was on her team I'm still kind of hurt to be honest with you I was on her team this is a a keep it brief I was on her team the next year I couldn't make it back we we finished his bottom dwellers the year I competed then I couldn't make it back the next year they got a ringer and they finished second place and uh for some reason I wasn't invited back after that no so a little hurt and uh just finished with uh since we're putting plugs in for uh alternative career paths uh I am so happy to see um Bridges more bridges being built to our business community and school system I think Andrew any other folks uh I would just say this since we're talking about starting the next phase of school modernization discussions perhaps the Board of Ed looks at it uh not just with an eye of enrollment in ancient buildings but perhaps an opportunity if I have my personal way to maybe start building around some expanded programming around manufacturing CNC not a full-fledged technical school but there's so anyway there's an opportunity to expand that uh and Garner more business input to that process so looking forward to it it's great that it's happening though um that concludes the returns report mine's really short um really the only item I have is I attended I think that was Sony were there too uh the state uh Legislative Office a week or two ago where the Appropriations Committee was this uh having public comment on the education cost sharing formula uh I I waited five hours to speak on behalf of Cabe um which was worth it and there was a lot of people a lot of board members superintendents Town managers uh every representation you could imagine from Connecticut uh supporting fully funding the cost sharing formula I think what that body's trying to do is make more money available the word Equitable is being used but overwhelmingly the the folks that spoke and myself were in favor of fully funding the formula you know uh do what you're supposed to do and also start looking at solving the special education cost uh disparity so it was awesome to see that we'll see what comes out of it I think if their proposal stays the course we won't be negatively impacted necessarily positively to the tune of about three hundred thousand dollars yeah and there's some interesting calculus going on in that formula because um some school districts I think South Windsor might have been one of them but don't quote me or what is field they'll lose Millions but they're okay with that I because while they're getting one of them is gonna get less Revenue but also based on the formula they're going to get hit with less expenses so it kind of Nets out so again I I didn't see the final version I know this will be in the beta but anyway I I think once we have some finalized version we'll know more about it in the impacts but it was just awesome to see folks speaking out um In fairness other than that I don't have any other updates um so keep it keep it short to that the only thing I would add is maybe in the future we can put on our board event meeting somewhere in here the upcoming best generation school doing committee meetings this year can never over promote that that being said uh we are not going to adjourn the executive session because uh information that's that the song was open to get uh the materialized today so there's literally nothing to talk about it may be on the next agenda so we're not going to be going to Executive session um so with that being said I asked for a motion to adjourn Tim seconded by Adam all those in favor it is unanimous thank you team this meeting is adjourned

that's it but then a training I don't expense thank you I'm just saying I hope it's gone it ain't happening all right so this appears that those of you are says I was with somebody the other day and remember they told me that they're good friends with her and now I'm blanking on who the heck I was talking to me all right thank you so much for to everybody for being here we're gonna go ahead and get started Creighton School District understands that our community of schools is located on the ancestral land of the Odom Jude and akumel hodam people who descended from the Hohokam and have inhibited these lands since time immemorial the Odom whose name translates literally to people our vibrant culture and Community spanning countless Generations into the past continuing to thrive in the present and carrying a powerful Legacy for Generations into the future with this acknowledgment the current School District formally recognizes that the traditional care and keeping of these lands by indigenous people is an aspirational model of community stewardship that we are committed to honor with practices policy and human relations um Yvonne would you like to lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance please all right it looks like we have everybody here we have Miss Gibson McLean Miss mcshuffree myself Miss McCaleb and Miss Ayers and we want to welcome everyone to tonight's meeting and remind the audience of the request to address board cards that must be completed and submitted to the board secretary if they wish to speak to an agenda item board policy provides for two cards White cards to be submitted in order to speak to an agenda item and blue cards to be submitted in order to speak during public comments due to the open meeting law board members are not allowed to address items that are not on the agenda this is for reference policy bedh I move the governing board approved the agenda as presented second all those in favor do we have any public comments today okay some and that brings us to our superintendent report well good evening everyone um I hope you had a marvelous Valentine's Day or galentine's day or Friendship Day or a day filled with love um I would like to say that a group of us uh celebrated uh Valentine's Day in San Antonio where we were learning at the National Education conference through the American Association of school administrators and while we were there I want to acknowledge that Michelle Berg is in an aspiring superintendent's cohort uh specially designed for future female superintendents and Andy Gutierrez is also in a state superintendent aspiring program designed specifically for Latino Latina and our very own Yvonne Carvajal graduated from the national aspiring superintendents program Academy for Latino Latina superintendent so congratulations Yvonne um we also received a copy of the uh aspa survey and the aspa group is the Arizona School Personnel administrators Association and they once again came out with the severe teachers shortage in Arizona but it was also all staff I do think it mirrors many Industries but specifically in education there was a story on it this morning on channel three uh fundamentally we are short across the state of 25 percent teachers and I will tell you Creighton is doing substantially better than the state average but there are 2 900 vacancies across the State of Arizona and have been all year uh we have a across the state a thousand bus driver unfilled vacancies and I have a breakdown of those which I'll include in a future board update or anybody else who's interested in the study I can get to you what the proportions and actual raw numbers are it's it's just disturbing across all work Industries but certainly among classroom teachers we we really need our physical presence to make the difference in the lives of children and the joy that we have in doing this job is just enriching and and filled with the difference that we get to make in the development of our future citizenry um I have great news Our Family Resource Center was renewed for four more years it's about an eight hundred thousand dollar Grant so yay to the renewal of Our Family Resource Center uh this is our partnership with first things first and this is a big we're just doing such an amazing job kudos to Leslie Owen who's not in the audience today but some she might be listening thank you Leslie for all your hard work and Yvonne for your leadership and Community uh relations uh I have on the agenda under superintendent's agenda to honor our and recognize our partnership with the chorus America and the Phoenix Boys Choir which was brought to me by Amy mccheffrey so Amy thank you for bringing us that partnership and it is beautiful tonight we intended to celebrate um the with the students actually singing for you but sadly the music director took ill this evening and we will reschedule that and we will do it at the next the next time she feels ready to bring the kids over to sing for us uh and then lastly and this is another big win for the district is we are so tickled to have had many wonderful Partnerships uh with foundations and other organizations that seek to help school districts uh in the last few years we've celebrated the Creighton Community Foundation which focuses on community and housing and social needs and especially food distribution with our families right now but in the last is it year and a half uh Barbara damiani upon her retirement has taken the lead of executive director and has worked with a variety of other business partners and marvelous governing board or board members that are on your 501c3 the journey you've been on to get this kicked off is mind-boggling and I want to thank you and introduce you to the governing board and our community officially tonight so come on up Barbara and share your story please welcome Barbara damiani executive director and Mac McDonald and welcome slower good evening I'm Barbara damiani I'm a retired Creighton School District employee um I have a I decided that before I left that the kids still were part of my life so I had to do something to support our kids so I talked to a few people and Donna and Jay and all of us we discussed about starting the Creighton Education Foundation our foundation so I ran with what I had and filled out all the paperwork for the 501c3 became a 501c3 person and got a board and took off running my board is Mac McDonald Patterson Donna Young Sergeant butcher they couldn't make it tonight uh Elizabeth placement Abraham James this be something I don't know how to say his last name and Suzanne schweiser neutral so that is my board and we meet once a month now and we're planning it we had we are here to talk about um the foundation itself it's to support students teachers and staff members of the Creighton Elementary School District live from by providing funds grants for supplies field trips sporting activities other school activities programs for um adventure learning that's what most of it's all about how the kids are going to Adventure in all their learning so we are we open it up yesterday on our part It's opened up for teachers to fill out applications and Emily will be sending it out as soon as I get her the last piece she needs for teachers to be able to have all the information they're missing one piece a code they need so the grants are open for teachers right now and students will follow in the next few weeks we're working on theirs all the children that are traveling abroad or wherever they will not field trip they can fill out applications we have it to where students that have left the district in the last few years that are still doing adventure learning we are willing to support them too so that is our plan but applications is opened up as on my end on creightoneducationfoundation.org how about the you've done some amazing fundraising oh yes we had a bowling tournament thing in November the beginning of November which was amazing we made a lot of money more money than I would ever think could ever think that you could make in a fundraiser for two hours we have a lot of support for a lot of vendors we have a lot of support from the community um a lot of people out of the Biltmore are supporting us that live in the Biltmore so we have community members everywhere that are just bringing in donations and we got a good start and we're ready to start giving out money to kids and teachers thank you it's okay thank you very much for this information um I sit on the Creighton Community Foundation board and um we've got a three million dollar operating budget this year and Jeff I don't Jeff Bowles I don't know if you know him um he would love um to offer support to you guys if if you want it I think you're doing similar things he's got um classroom grants and also supports Junior ambassadors but he's a great resource out there he's been in the community for over a decade doing similar types of things and um is very plugged in so you know that's just another resource for you guys thank you does anybody have any questions or comments thank you Partnerships like this are really important and it's always great to see people that were teachers and Educators in the district and then said you know what I I need to keep going so thank you for all of your hard work thank you that brings us to governing board reports and Miss Ayers would you like to start us off not have fun tonight thank you Miss McCaleb just a real brief I hope everyone tried to relax on the three-day weekend I know they're you know double-edged sword because today was the monday-est Tuesday ever um but I hope everyone was able to relax a little bit um I know everyone's super excited that the looming AEL threat is subsided but I also need to remind everyone that it is for a year so making sure that you know anyone out there who's been doing work at the Capitol talking to legislators um really just pushing that we get a final solution to this so that we're not back at this fear stage this time next year again so it's like celebration but also don't stop fighting that's thank you so much thank you Ms Gibson McLean I don't have a report today awesome thank you the only thing that I do have to say is a few weeks ago I had mentioned that I was at a school board partner's cohort and we recently had our they do a lot of anti-racist policy work for school board members and we recently went through our anti-racized racist superintendent search so I thought that was uh ironic that they went through a whole segment and they have like this policy framework already put out for school districts that are looking for superintendents and what a great timing so that was great and I also recently got accepted um three weeks ago to the Georgetown edu Comics um con or not conference classes it's basically a five-week deep dive into budgeting and how the budget should reflect the policies and the goals that the districts have so I'm really excited to take a deep dive into learning a little bit more of our budget and seeing how our policies or what we're saying we're doing actually reflects our budget so that's great too and then after I finish that you know month and a half I've gruesome wonderful numbers and budgeting I'll report back to see what you know changes that we're going to be making here at the district level that ends my report and then we move on to approval of consent I move the governing board approve consent agenda items a through F in accordance with policy bedb-e second all those in favor I thank you guys all right and that brings us to 6A which is Monte Vista School update all right at this time I'd be happy to invite the Monte Vista team forward it's been a very interesting year at Monte Vista school and so the team is here tonight lots of kids parents teachers and staff here to share the story of progress and the challenges that they've been working to overcome consistently throughout the year so with that I will welcome Dr Lauren and the Monte Vista team there are a lot of us but don't get nervous [Laughter] we have a they have a succinct time update on uh Madam president members of the governing board executive team thank you so much for this opportunity to update you on Monte Vista and how our community has been doing this year um we've had a lot of great things that have happened this year there are also a lot of challenges that have been holdovers from previous years and also things that we're recognizing are things that are coming up that are new for us and so we'd like to illuminate some of those for you this evening um I would like to note that in our presentation we have aligned our goals to the Strategic plan goals so if you're familiar with those strategic plan goals you'll probably see that they mirror in some way I tried to use creative titles so it's a little bit different uh goal number one we will focus mostly on academics one of the things that you'll see throughout the presentation as well is that we have marked each slide that it's appropriate to do so with an alignment to our integrated action plan so those of you who are familiar with the title program our integrated action plan is based on our comprehensive needs assessment that has completed the priority year and in that completion of that we identify several principles that we're going to focus on this year our focus is on principles 2.1 2.3 5.2 basically principle two is about instruction 2.1 I don't have to read it for you there it's right there for you to see basically academic behavioral social emotional expectations 2.3 is really about differentiating instruction and meeting the needs of all Learners with Universal Design for Learning we'll talk a little bit more about that in other slides and 5.2 is about environment so where are we how are we building a environment where our school leaders teachers students families feel respect and mutually understand each other so our first slide is really related to academics and what we're looking at is where are we right now comprehensively with our data those of you who've been with us for some time probably remember exact path you've also heard from other schools about the benchmarks so I'm not going to spend a lot of time talking about that specifically just to note that for Monta Vista we really are looking at especially for exact path where students gaps are in their learning based on the Diagnostics that are given in quarter one and Quarter Two If you recall from previous presentations the program does a learning path sets each individual student on a path based on the gaps that might be present from prior learning so for instance a fourth grade student may have gaps in math that are identified as standards from second grade so the learning path would start with those gaps and move students forward you can see from the chart on the slide that we're focused really in this look on skills mastered there are over the course of this time period this represents about 538 students in grades third through eighth that have mastered skills which means that they've completed tasks and completed assessments within the program to earn that skill this is positive because we hope it's going to translate into better performance on the metrics that aasb our state test is going to measure as well as helping us to kind of understand about where they are the program is best when it's adhered to with Fidelity from the students so there are sometimes students that will log 20 hours of work on the system and actually have been logged in for 60 hours so there's maybe some opening of the program and not really attending to the program so of course we have teachers work with students and trying to help them understand the importance of that tool um so just to kind of highlight a couple of areas uh if we look at math our eighth grade over quarter one they increase the number of skills Mastered by 81 percent uh we saw a slight decrease in language arts in third grade and we saw an increase in uh a significant number in fifth grade with reading another look that we are examining is our interim benchmarks these benchmarks were completed in January I think Gateway had just completed them before their their presentation last time so we're able to kind of dig into the data down to the student level by standard by question even looking at specific misconceptions and learning center problems that are part of each specific area of that test Ela and math are the two content areas that are assessed we have challenges we know that in this particular Benchmark both language arts and math are lagging behind our performance in last year's aasa we're going to address that a little bit later when we talked to you about how our action planning and how we're working toward meeting our students needs that is concerning we want our students to improve and do better year over year obviously so we think that the way that we've approached our action planning for this round helps to focus the question right so what is it that students need to do to be masters of that particular skill or that particular particular standard uh areas to note we have in let me back up our school has additional targeted support and intervention as a designation many of the schools in the district have certain subpopulations based on the ASA test our focus is on our students with special needs our English language Learners positive in this particular round of benchmarking is that two of the grade levels of students that would have special needs actually increase their scores over last year which is really wonderful to see um we also have cons a couple of concerns third grade reading seems to be down from last year's scores it's a different cohort so we're talking about a group of students that were in second grade last year now they're in third grade but it's really important for us to recognize that you know the teachers are the same the instruction is the same what is it that's changed what's different so we're looking at all those areas you know one of the things that we've talked about in our conversations around data is stamina so our students adhering to the test and really reading the questions completely you know we've talked about how some of these multiple choice questions they require you to answer too not just two some of them have three or some have an eliminate one out of four so it really takes some critical thinking and some processing to be able to kind of get there so um what I'd like to do is ask Maria Guyer to come up and talk about our early literacy program yeah Maria Guyer I'm the effective schools coach at Monte Vista and um we have some data for you about early literacy our screener for K3 is ice deep and there are some things that we'd like to note for you we have seen some really good progress with our kindergarten group in fact if we look at one of the tests rapid letter naming is part of a composite of four tests actually and on that Kinder composite we're seeing that sixty percent of our kindergartners were at or above Benchmark and 23 were approaching Benchmark so really big difference than what we were seeing in the fall so we're really excited about that progress with our with our little guys um first grade we've seen some progress in a couple of areas we've also noticed that there's a decrease from fall to winter on the ORF some of that can be attributed to the fact that the winter passage is more difficult and students just aren't there yet so again our teachers are looking at that and figuring out where they need to meet students what skills they need in order to get them to become more fluent readers second and third grade seems to be steady um there's been some increase with um The Maze testing which is just comprehension uh oral reading fluency though stays pretty flat in second and third grade so we know we have some places that we need to um work on and again meet those students with the skills that they still need they just really aren't there yet um that's it for me what is the um m-o-w-r oh so let's move on with reading okay so we know that all of these uh screeners that we give students K3 are all leading up to that really big third grade move on with reading um legislation and so we work really hard to make sure that kids are fluent readers by third grade um so that's that's what that is related to thank you are all these tests taken um on an iPad or any of these like hand paper no sorry I just thought of the question sorry um the only one that is taken uh on the iPad is The Maze and it's a one minute um like a completion where students have to find the right word okay everything else is administered by an adult okay um some of it but none of it is paper pencil it's called oral I think yeah good evening I'm Cheryl Green and I'm one of the instructional coaches at Monte Vista we are using two different programs and are attending a couple of trainings to help us grow in the area of language arts with our district focus on early literacy we have many k3s teachers participating in District training one of the trainings is called letters and it's to deepen the knowledge for teachers to be literacy and language expert in the science of reading it teaches the skills needed to master the foundational okay can't do it Foundation I can't breathe um Master the foundational and fundamentals of reading and writing instruction it is a two-year cohort and they are really enjoying it and they've been telling us how much it has helped their their literacy program in their classroom Ames is the second training and this course prepares today's Educators to use specific evidence-based approaches to improve struggling students language skills and academic outcomes in elementary through High School plus it gives a deep dive into what and how and the what and how of structured literacy instruction they also find practical strategies and guidelines on all aspects of language and literacy instruction we also are working with two programs one is Hagerty and one is sips Hagerty is a a program that it is a use of a book and Hagerty happens to be the name of the author um many of our K3 teachers are using this program to help with teaching phonemic awareness and phonics um it does state that phonemic awareness is one of the best early predictors for reading success and so it's really important that we have that program in in our hands and working with it so um the sips program the the Hagerty program um is one [Music] the sips program sorry a program that the district has put in place for reading interventionists so now I'd like to introduce one of our reading interventions to share about the sips program probably like sleep good evening I'm Kelly Blakeslee one of the reading interventionists over at Monte Vista um and we have implemented a new program this year which stands for systematic instruction in phonics and phonemic awareness I think I nailed it um my favorite thing about it is that we have received direct training from the sips people themselves so it works best when we can get the information directly from the vendor and so it's really nice that we have ongoing meetings that support us in implementing the program because it is systematic and it checks all the boxes that are required by the state a number of them are but we were really thoughtful in how we implemented it so that we could teach it with Fidelity and see if it's actually working and it is we found a lot of success so far um so I'm really excited about that a challenge that we still face is that we're still overcoming the challenges from the pandemic that already were existing and that are just exacerbated and so my colleague Tara monashkin and I are kind of having to intervention our way through a lot of of you know fall behind as a result of that and so we just can't do that we need we would need you know 10 interventionist so we really need to in my opinion strengthen our our tier one instruction using some similar things that we've done and found success with in the intervention model to be able to help the teachers to feel just as successful in implementing that tier one instruction so um there's a lot of challenges but I have found a lot of Success With Sips this year and I'm really grateful that we have implemented it in this first core cohort feels really strong moving forward and I'm excited to see the results at the end of the year for our students and one of my kiddos is here tonight thank you Kelly what do you mean by tier one instruction what's that oh I mean um like the the first first round of instructions so in a classroom so I do pull out groups I didn't know if it was like a sip specific term oh no just uh just an education term yeah so my my role is technically tier two which is students that need a little support and then tier three would be even more support beyond that television all right thank you I guess I do have a quick question sorry um given your relationship with sips are they able to help Provide support for classroom teachers or ways to kind of differentiate their what they have available to you as far as curriculum goes for it to be yeah that's a good question I think some districts do on a more tier one instruction which is like more in the Gen Ed classroom we're using it specifically with intervention groups and I think it works best for that I that's actually me in the photo celeb setting um so and I only see you can see I only see five to seven kids at a time and so it's a lot more effective when I can do that more one-on-one small group instruction um as far as what our you know packages or whatever we've purchased through them I don't know what that looks like um I would have to ask Sarah best she's the one who kind of coordinates all the reading interventionists but it's something we can definitely look into and you know me I'm not going to shut my mouth about anything so I um like I said really grateful for how we've implemented this and and looking forward to using that as a model for how we can make find success elsewhere as well thank you yeah thanks I'm going to go a little out of order so we can talk about math before going into action planning so we're going to skip one side and now I'd like to introduce Sarah Larkin to review slide eight hey my name is Sarah Larkin I'm the other instructional coach at Monte Vista um tonight I'd like to share with you a little bit about our mouth journey of the school year um our Math teachers have been consistently implementing uh into math throughout the whole year it has been a steep learning curve but there has been lots of positive feedback some of that includes um like the variety of math manipulatives and online resources like waggle our students are enjoying them um our teachers really appreciate the various resources that are available to support differentiating in the classroom um there's a K8 uh word problem strategy called three reads which I think is really cool that it starts as young as Kinder um it's a way to help students access the word problem uh they have academic conversation built into the program with like turn-in talks um and the growth mindset practices are also there so those are some of the the positive feedback um some challenges have been um adjusting to like the pacing guides and the pacing of the overall lessons it's very different from our past resource Engage New York which we used for a lot of years so teachers are struggling with like uh for example some units are in a different order than they might have been taught in the past and so they're like oh that's not how I would do it but we know it's going to um you know we're going to stay the course and eventually like see the results so let me think um what else um has been a struggle has been that our upper grades are seeing some gaps in what our students understandings about math are and like what the program's expecting them to already know and so um that's been really challenging and frustrating for them and it may be one of the reasons why our diagnosed our benchmark scores might not be as high as we would like uh to support this teachers are using there's are you ready diagnostic assessment that they give before each module and then along with task analysis like thinking about how to best meet their students and um needs and now I'd like to introduce one of our Kindred teachers Devon to talk to you about her math instructions hi my name is Devin del Castillo and I'm a kindergarten teacher over at Monte Vista for the past two years it's been my goal to make math more engaging and comprehensible for my students to support the new hmh curriculum I have taken ideas from the math Cadre and arts integration techniques at the beginning of the year my students really struggled with the amount of materials that came with hmh trying to sort through like flipping to pages in the books and sorting through all the manipulatives but as we started using it every day and they were able to you know get through it we were able to have more time and so I was able to incorporate more supportive things like um my number talks so we kind of do it as a warm-up um and through number talks I have seen a really big Improvement in mental math fluency math vocabulary and academic collaboration and this is in kindergarten so they're they're really trying their best um and then I Incorporated some Arts integration techniques like meet the shapes and through that it provides a fun and explorative way for students to learn the names and the attributes of the shapes and overall math is becoming one of their favorite subjects and they're excited to be able to talk about their strategies with their peers foreign slides and we're briefly going to talk about our action planning process that we use this last round um as Dr Lauren mentioned we are seeing many challenges with our data we decided to use a data analysis format shared by Cina that was supported features as they prepare their students for the upcoming state test we looked carefully at our data to determine which students we should focus on for our small group targeted instruction we were able to identify which students to include based on growth on prior tests looking at our bottom quartile and different sub subgroups such as our El students and special ed populations on this slide you will see the flow map we use to do our supported Target instruction we use the aasa blueprint to determine the most essential domain to focus on we identified the priority standards by looking at Benchmark II data through illuminate they were able to look at the standards and then drill all the way down to the questions then we created the learner-centered problems that helped us determine what intervention was needed I'd like to now introduce Jessica Guevara to talk to us about her small group targeted instruction hi everyone my name is Jessica Guevara I am a 7th grade math teacher at Monte Vista um and last week we looked at our ASA scores and kids you're not looking at them I was kind of bummed out um because I feel like the scores are not reflecting what my students are learning in the classroom um I think at the beginning of the year there was a huge gap between the last year before the pandemic versus where they're at right now um in terms of social emotional and academics as well you know they're still learning how to be students but they are also trying to catch up to seventh grade math so with this new curriculum it was a little too rigorous for our students it took a while to get used to um and the number talks and the Turning talks were very helpful when it came to having discussions about math um but looking at the pacing and the scope and sequence this is definitely something that I was worrying about and with the action planning I was able to identify what standards my students needed to focus on and I've Incorporated math centers that are reviewing all of the 7th grade standards that we have gone over and then also standards for the new units that are coming up um they've been very helpful because I've been able to spend time with every single student in my class it's China 20 minutes each day with each group and I get to track the progress of every student I've talked to my students about what they appreciate about these centers they've said that they've had more one-on-one work with their teacher than they ever have so um that's kind of what I'm doing in my classroom from this course thank you all right so uh in the interest of time we're not going to take too much time on professional development just to the remark if you look at the chart what we did with our professional development for teachers is we differentiated based on what the needs were from the comprehensive needs assessment it's aligned to the principles that we have that we're focusing on under engagement instruction checking for understanding our PBIS model which is positive interventions behavior intervention support and SEL so at a future date we can update you further on those two slides you're going to move forward into our next goal which is community Equity diversity inclusion I'd like to introduce Melissa Fisher our child Justice Advocate to share some of the work that she is leading on our campus good evening everybody I'm really honored to be here thank you so much for having me and just want to share a little bit with you so as Dr Dr Lauren said I am the child Justice Advocate on Monte vista's campus and I get the absolute privilege of being able to go in as support to the teachers and to the community to kind of add in those pieces of you know learning for the students that are non-academic and then getting to support the teachers to incorporate those things into their curriculum okay so first thing that I do I'm just going to go through the list very very briefly here is I do for example there's students that need daily check-ins like for example if they come to school they're unable to adjust to the classroom right away sometimes I go in and just spend a little time with them and they're able to enter right into the classroom and into right into the academics and it works very very well now another thing that I do is I assist the teachers in bringing social emotional learning into the classrooms because as we know it's no longer a time when it's just academics taught there's so much more that each of the students need and so I get to go bring that into the classrooms with them first I model it then I team teach with them and then they start to incorporate that into their classrooms and so I have Daniella here with us today and she's going to tell you a little bit about one of the lessons that I got to teach her when I'm doing social emotional learning in the classroom about emotion Daniella will you go ahead and come on all right Daniel go ahead my name is Anila from third grade Vista Elementary School in Miss Fisher's class I learned that you can have different feelings even if your feelings that you can go to a calm down corner I made a card for Isa and Miss Pennington that's because she wasn't feeling she wasn't feeling good and I was sad because she wasn't feeling good so I made her a car when she came back I gave it to her she was feeling a little okay but she had to left when we were at lunch because she wasn't feeling good I'm gonna do for her make her happy and so one of the things I did with Daniella is we talked to like she said a little bit about emotions and what I said is sometimes emotions can change depending on if someone makes you feel better so I had them all make cards for somebody that they thought about that wasn't feeling good and she chose a girl named Issa with a special education student and she made a card for her because she was feeling sick and when she gave her the car she said she got to witness an experience that it made her happy it changed her emotions so Daniella thank you so much do you want to say that's fine thank you Daniel and so another thing that I get to do in the classroom is community circles and that's where we the the teachers and the students actually get to know one another outside of academics because sometimes it can be you're in the room with the teacher all they're doing is teaching you and a lot of times they don't even know their fellow students so these Community circles give them the opportunity to sit down with one another and really get to know themselves as people and from what one of the edge of the students that I actually was going to bring here tonight wasn't able to be here he said it makes the classroom just work so much more smoothly because you're not in the space with a bunch of total strangers and they just get to know when they connect with each other a little bit more and so with Community circles I get to go in and model them and then the teachers get to take them on because they know their students more than I do and so I'm just there to model it for them and to make it something that it's accessible for them and so the next thing that I do is also called the student assistant program now that is a really awesome leadership type program for any student it's one of the electives but the students get to come in and I get to train them on how to assist the teachers and so I have Jonathan tequila who is here tonight and he's going to go ahead and he's going to talk a little bit about the student assistant program the student assistant program is an elective for six through eight the student assistant program is when I or other students help the teachers out I can help the teachers out by passing the papers or grading some of the other papers I pass out meanwhile some of the teachers teach the class while on the fellow students in need need I help them I assist them so that is what I do I foresee a teacher Courier in your near future that's awesome thank you so much for sharing that Jonathan and that's one of the things we hope to do is to inspire them to something like that so I've expanded the programs to things like making resumes for them getting letters of recommendations for them we've gotten them their first paid position where they actually get to fill out an application in an interview and so it's a really great segue for them to go into high school and so there's a lot of other things that I do but I think what's really important to bring out is I like to do restorative practices because if a student is struggling gets in trouble why just leave them there with a punishment of detention why can't we do a little bit better in helping them to understand it a little bit more like for example I did a restorative practice with one of the group of kids that called 9-1-1 as a prank call and I got to do a practice where I got to bring in an officer who was a friendly officer who got to tell them hey this is what happens when you call 9-1-1 and now these kids are a group and they're working together and a lot of them have just started to shift their behavior and so it was something that was very productive and actually was able to bring again restoration to them and to the community and with the teacher as well so that's something that we like to strive for with the scl and that's something that I get to do as child Justice Advocate and so in the essence of timeout is going to leave it at that but thank you so much for listening thank you um good evening my name is Adriana padaca I'm the assistant principal at our school today I'll be talking to you a little bit about our Equity initiative what we're trying to do this is an ongoing year-long process so our team is kind of planning on a one to three year plan last year before we had met with you our team spent time working on our Equity commitment so as you see on the screen those are the five commitments that we have centered all of our work around primarily this year we are focusing on the first one creating and sustaining a safe and inclusive environment thinking about the ways that we could do that for the many subgroups that we have on our campus um additionally just to give you some highlights of the equity work we've done so far we did have our youth Equity Summit and with our fifth graders it was great the fifth graders were highly enthusiastic so we really appreciated that um a big part of our long-term plan is ensuring that students are able to do restorative practices on their own and are also able to regulate themselves so as a result we've developed something called our rest and restore Corner in every classroom there's a corner and our goal is for students to be able to go and use that for their self-regulation and be able to Advocate and identify that for themselves and as we increase student ability to have their own restorative dialogues they can go and do those together in a private place that provides that inclusive safety and then lastly when we're thinking about our staff we've really focused on our personal identity and exploration I think everyone on our staff is really committed to fully understanding what our biases are and also what we're bringing to the table and then being able to determine how we can make change so we're creating an equitable environment so it's been a big focus of our all staff developments and continues to be in our small site so with that we're going to go ahead and move on to our house committee and Miss guy is going to come on up so this is our fifth year of implementing houses at Monta Vista and it's a big point of Pride for us um and if you're in infinitum anyway our staff our staff works really hard at um expanding the house system and including we sent five staff members to The Ron Clark Academy this summer so thank you for your support in that and by doing so they came back and are working on brought back ideas which then led us to work on how we could expand our student involvement more and give the students more opportunities that align to the Ron Clark Academy vision and yes is going to come up and talk to you about the house all right hello again um so I'm the house Council sponsor and basically what house counsel is is a mixture of what we learned from the Ron Clark um training versus student council so we match those things up we have leaders from each house who meet up on every other Monday and we plan Spirit weeks free events uh just little things here and there on school campus to kind of spread kindness on our campus and love um and our students are just learning the importance of really serving their Community one of the biggest things is service right and that's what leadership really is about is about your community and what you're doing for for them um and then they get to dress up professionally kind of you know Ponder on what it means to present yourself um as an example and model for other people so that's what we're doing with our house Council I really appreciate that and appreciate you even how you said that it's important to teach our kids about community and service so I'm it's really rare when you hear that kind of lingle so I appreciate that and that you guys are actually implementing it in the school so over the years that we've been uh coming into the board and presenting we've talked about inclusion and we haven't really focused on our self-contained special education classes as much so tonight we thought we would take a moment to illuminate what's happening wonderful things that are happening in our PACE program and our places program which are both cross Oracle programs the distinction really is the places program has students that are much more medically fragile and maybe even more significantly cognitively below their peers I will invite Ms Pennington our PACE program it's a tongue twister the PACE program teacher for intermediate students to share a little bit of her experience with how we include our students in the self-contained classrooms in our community as well as some feedback from one of our parents who unfortunately couldn't make it tonight so Miss Pennington and Miss Lee from third grade so thank you so much for having me here today um as Dr Lauren said I am the paces teacher over at Monte Vista for intermediate ages um so with inclusion I'm not gonna lie we originally were very simplistic we're with our thinking of what is inclusion and what does it look like we took our kids to lunch recess special area classes and that was it but us as a team we decided we wanted more exposure and our students needed more exposure so we came together and we decided that we wanted to have our students come into our general education classrooms so we are getting the exposure of the academics with our gender teachers and also more communication skills with our peers ever since we have been going into our general education classrooms we have seen an increase in all of our students with communication skills academic skills and overall they just been thriving altogether the reason why I have Miss Lee up here with me today is because for the first half of the school year for second quarter we have the honor of going to special area classes with her classroom and our kids in my class just grew a strong bond with her classroom Daniella is one of the classmates that has grown so fond of our kiddos and unfortunately this quarter we are not able to go to special area classes with Miss Lee's class but we decided we wanted to continue on that relationship with her classroom so now we are doing reading buddies with her class um ever since we have done reading buddies with our classes together I have seen a growth in one of my students particularly he was very shy and did not want to read at all when it was just one-on-one with me and now he is thriving and is wanting to read he goes home every day with a book and he reads to his grandpa every day um I would like to have Miss Lee share how it's impacted her classroom and impacted her having our kids come together even so blessed with this opportunity I've been dying for this for years to have the page program in part of my classroom and the children just took to it like water oh my goodness and so they are excited to go find them at lunchtime can I go sit with them you know it's extended to strong friendship and in the classroom with the reading buddies they just love being with them and they are learning how to ask her children questions about what they are reading with the books and making sure that the child holds the book not just them and just being tunnel together and talking things over and so it's just the bond oh my goodness it's so strong and these children just absolutely love it and they were devastated when they didn't have specials together but this is a great way for it to continue with the Friendship so and in addition to that not only have we been reading together but her class in particular has been really wanting to learn more of how they could communicate better with the students in our pace and places program and so they're like can we learn sign language so we did one half of the class doing reading buddies and in the second half we all together learned the 25 basic signs so that was pretty cool to watch as Dr Lauren said we did have a parent in my classroom her name is Cindy Garcia mancha unfortunately she was not able to make it tonight however she did send me something on behalf that she would like for me to read um when RJ was two months of age he was diagnosed with epilepsy his neurologist had given us the news that RJ would not be able to speak show emotions or even have an imagination as any parent would be we were in denial but would do anything to help RJ achieve these milestones we have seen improvements as the school years came and gone and we were afraid he may have lost what he learned when covet hit but he didn't when he got to miss Pennington's he progressed from what he learned in Ms A's class and more RJ has been more vocal he picked up sign language from Mom because I am hard of hearing but he is using both words and sign to communicate more RJ had begun to be more independent and always saying don't worry I got it RJ has been excited to show us the books that Ms Pennington sends us and has been improving enunciating with each book we Are Beyond grateful for what Monta Vista has done for RJ but truly blessed that he has had the opportunity to be one of Miss Pennington's students and show the neurologist don't worry I can do it so thank you so much for letting me share inclusion with you today I have a couple questions yeah um so how long have you been combining the classrooms um we've been combining the classroom since the very beginning of third quarter of this year of this year okay yes okay I guess I was under the impression oh sorry I should reiterate with the competition with me and Ms Lee's class has been since third quarter but inclusion as a whole we have been working as a pieces and places team to continue to increase since the beginning of the school year okay so okay I guess I was under the impression we've been doing this for longer like for many years so I'm it's great that you're doing it um and what's preventing um The Specialist classes from happening um so the the inclusion we've been doing has been always focused on the um gen like the special areas in their lunch because of the cognitive needs of our students so that has been happening for years um coincidentally for this team um there are Behavior challenges in every class and when we realize the balance between creating doubles classes in PE and then the class the classes that we had their Dynamics um there was a bit of a struggle so it made more sense to split up that group which caused just a change in the schedule so nothing to do with the programming of it all but just the logistics of the many personalities we have in third grade thank you yes yes still with the third grade peers just a different third grade classroom so in turn more relationships are being built thank you so much for sharing I really appreciate it um my brother was in self-contained classroom at Monte Vista in the 90s and it's miles different I mean eons different from what it was I can't even imagine him being around other peers so it's really great to see this happening thank you I just want to build on that but being more intentional like you said we've done the specials and the lunch and the recess but at the end of the day they're still and then they go back to their classroom so I just really love hearing that we're increasing that interaction that's huge just to editorialize for myself the houses are a big part of that too so all of our students all of our students and all of our staff are separated into houses and they get to celebrate when unfortunately infinita wins something um that they get to participate everyone gets to participate in those celebrations so um thank you for that so we're going to jump and what I'm going to do in the interest of time thank you so much for being gracious um we're going to just have the people that we invited to speak come up and share because we want to honor their commitment to our presentation um so I'm going to ask Miss Dana deniger Smith she is a second grade teacher and she has been a part of our Arts integration program since we started six years ago when I arrived in Monte Vista so she's going to share a little bit of her experience good evening I'm Dana deniger Smith and I am very happy to be with Monte Vista blessed um it's been an amazing to see the importance of how we are integrating the Arts and creating using a creative literacy in the curriculum this has been huge for our school the changes within the last six years that we've been starting and incorporating um not only is it fun it has opened up the minds to have greater understanding that reinforces all the concepts the students are trying to learn for example one that um I have had a lot of fun with once I've learned how to do this particular art integration um it's called a character interview and character interview you pretend you're on a talk show and a lot of the kids didn't know it's it's second grade what a talk show really was so first we had to kind of go over that and give them examples and they just you know ate that up and so we do a talk show and of course um I have to be the host and I invite up the characters that we have just read about in a book of literature and they um are that character so they come up in character not just dressed in character but they are completely in character with how they've what they've learned about that character so they're showing the character traits um some of the students that are doing this uh have great difficulty with writing and expressing themselves and once they are given this opportunity it's quite amazing to see these students what they can do and um not only am I asking the questions up as a host the audience the students are asking questions about showing their comprehension they're asking the characters that are up questions as well and um we could take it in so many different levels so it just it's just been quite amazing um with learning this concept of character interview in arts integration I was able to model to a few to a few teachers and help them use it in their classrooms and um so that has been quite it's been remarkable that we're spreading what we're learning now to other teachers there's um another one that I've tried just this year that I learned so we're still learning and it's called movement with music and this has been fantastic for science the students are able to you to show us what they've learned for example this year we did the life cycle of a butterfly the bee and with music and movement they're able to show us the different parts of the life cycle so Arts integration has been fantastic yeah that's awesome that you did that um I recently two weeks ago read an article on the facts that psychologically has on it was mostly like high school students but it was a like a thesis part or a statement report whatever you call those on arts and how it really enhances the brain development so the fact that you guys are already doing it it's it's awesome especially what it does in in children so that's great to hear well weren't you going to do something with the board with science and movement maybe next time thank you thank you thank you Dr Lauren I think the best example of this sorry about my my uh voice um is seeing it in action in one of your classrooms I don't know that any of the new board members have had the opportunity to see that because it's I saw it pre-covet I think so um when we come and visit um that would be a nice thing too is that yes really when I understood exactly kind of what it was yeah we invite you to come and we'll make sure that we have some experiences for you to to participate in and you don't have to be a butterfly you could be okay water cycle is another uh I'm going to skip ahead and ask Miss um Holly Hancock to come forward she is our technology Mentor teacher and has a student with her Carlos so we're gonna have Carlos come up as well unfortunately uh good evening my name is Holly Hancock and I'm a fifth grade teacher and our school is technology Mentor teacher and I'm going to speak to you briefly about technology at our school um so Monte Vista is an apple distinguished School meaning that teachers at our school have demonstrated their proficiency with iPad and Mac applications and shown that they can integrate these tools in their instruction in a way that has proven to be highly effective um as Monte vista's technology Mentor teacher I have the privilege of getting to work and collaborate with teachers to advance their understanding and usage of technology in their classrooms so we often discussed using technology to collect and you know collect and analyze student data increase student engagement provide greater opportunities for student choice and especially as an Arts integration School how we can use technology to enhance student creativity through our lessons um so overall um it's incredible to see the ways that technology is um used across our campus and how it's made learning more accessible to all of our students from a student in second grade I'm using it to broaden their understanding of place value to our self-contained and special education students I'm using it to um excuse me support their communication needs and find their voice technology at Monte Vista has used to promote creativity um and increase accessibility and promote Equity each day um so I have Carlos here who wants to tell you a little bit about his experience using technology in the classroom good evening my name is Clarence but good evening my name is Carlos and I am a fifth grade student at Monte Vista I would like to tell you a little bit about how I use technology at school using technology in my classes has allowed me to be more creative and better learn my subjects for an example I often use keynote in my classes to make presentations about different topics or use freeform to draw visual models to represent my math problems overall I think that using technology at school is very important for students to be successful in school thank you for your time thank you thank you thank you so much all right I'm going to ask Elizabeth otania she is our Community Education Outreach specialist and uh one of our parents Olivia Hermann and she's our PTO treasurer so we want to talk a little bit about our environment good evening my name is Elizabeth and I am the Community Education and Outreach specialist at Monte Vista I collaborate and I support PTO with a lot of their events most of the credit goes to Mr Moses salceda he is the kindergarten teacher that is in charge of the PTO this year of 2022-2023.

somebody I'd like to call to order a regular meeting of the Board of Education February 21st 2023 at seven o'clock P.M uh Cindy could you please call the roll here present meitzler here uh since our last meeting we lost a student at rotello Middle School silence so that we could um reflect on that loss before we said the pledge I'm Mrs meitzler would you lead us in the pledge now please I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands one nation under God indivisible with liberty and justice for all uh Dr Hitchens are there any changes or items removed from or added to the agenda I would say we're going to start with some celebrations so let's add that to the agenda oh yes we are going to start um with celebrations because we've had a number of teachers that have been honored um for different things and so we have various board members who are going to do a shout out for those teachers um on behalf of the whole board so um I honestly don't know who all's got a shout out Aaron Aaron sure do um I would like to congratulate um Christy Geeson from RMS um who is nominated by her colleague Jeff Thomas who's in the audience today um she recently earned the isbe award of meritorious service so we are very very pleased to acknowledge that accomplishment well deserved [Applause] um I have the honor of speaking a little bit about Chad Clary who's a teacher over at Grace McWane they took he kind of led a group of first grade students over to Markland which is out by the grace McLean area Mill Creek area which is a center for um adults and children with kind of profound special needs and health special Healthcare needs so they went out there and heard about kind of goods and services but while they were there they were surprised a bit because Mr Clary was presented with a volunteer of the Year award from the marklin staff he often comes out there to volunteer we'll bring some of the older kids that he works with over at caneland so we congratulate him on that and our very thrilled with the good work that he and is doing out there and how he's breaking that awareness bringing that awareness and that effort to the kids at Grace McQueen foreign and we're super excited to announce that Lisa Hatfield is honored as one of the 2023 Yamaha 40 under 40 excellence in music music education winners she's our fifth grade band and Orchestra teacher for all of our elementary schools and I love it because her main goal is to have students really love playing their instruments um here I think was the most amazing thing I read her program has a retention rate that is well over 90 percent and she's an amazing educator she creates a collaborative and engaging program she involves other music teachers she brings older students back to support what the fifth graders are doing and I love this she's really creative enthusiastic I know her because my children have all been in the music program and she will do different things like she'll use a basketball to help kids understand beat she will let them build Legos so that students understand how rhythms build together um and I thought this was fun she um I had students learning to play an active from a tick tock song so she's incorporating all sorts of different um different and creative ideas she shares her knowledge by teaching courses on integrating Tech into school music courses so she's just an amazing educator and we are incredibly excited and proud to celebrate this honor with Mrs Hatfield [Applause] my turn Okay so uh I'll be reading a statement on behalf of Chris Lowe my colleague who is not here this evening so it starts fellow batavians let me Begin by apologizing for my absence as you may know our high school girls basketball team won regionals last week today is the first game of the sectional tournament versus Saint Charles North as much as I enjoy board meetings it is a priority for our family to support one another and I need to be there for my daughter and her team I hope you understand however even though I can't be here and want to take a moment to recognize some amazing teachers deserving of our appreciation over the past weeks we have seen some incredible accolades bestowed upon our staff as the board representative for the high school I want to highlight too who Define what it means to be a bulldog both teachers are members of batavia's high school's English Department and I have been fortunate enough to have my children taught by both the first I would like to highlight is Kim Pearlman she is currently my daughter's teacher for two blacks teaching her both public speaking and AP language my daughter says she really knows what she's talking about and that's High Praise from a child who doesn't talk about her classes or teachers very often my son also had her when I told him she had been nominated he said she deserves it as parents my wife and I see the time and care that goes into Kim's teaching and the consistent email update she sends to parents and the engagement of our children with her assignments it is evident she goes above and beyond what we typically expect that is why I wasn't surprised to hear that she has been nominated by her peers to be the Kane County educator of the year it is a well-deserved honor in fact our staff is putting together a scrapbook to support her if your family has been impacted by Kim and you'd like to write a letter of support you can send them to Marnie harm at marnie.heim bps101.net I apologize for the late notice but those letters of support need to be in need to be received by the end of February congratulations Kim and good luck we also have another teacher to celebrate Amber Jersey this one is a bit more personal I met her a few years ago when she was my son's teacher our nation was struggling with racial Justice and our district began to focus on Dei work I have watched this teacher work and grow tremendously over the past few years I have seen her struggle with the stress tears and self-doubt this work can bring with it she has grown from an amazing classroom teacher into an amazing advocate for all of our students and she has become a community leader from the beginning I saw her willingness to invest her own time and money to educate herself on diversity Equity inclusion and Justice taking any training she could so she can better serve our kids I've seen her efforts Inspire students staff and the community after all of her struggles it is amazing to see her recognized by a local state by local state and National organizations and rewarded for her leadership efforts I have no doubt she is the biggest Advocate and local expert when it comes to making everyone feel welcome in our schools and Community I cannot think of a better teacher deserving of the honor of North Suburban teacher of the year congratulations [Applause] so and congratulations on being one of the 12 finalists for Illinois teacher of the year thank you for inviting me Chris Lowe to represent our district and sharing your amazing moment at the Teacher of the Year banquet this weekend I was excited to be there and I'm hoping our town will be home to the Illinois teacher of the year no matter how things turn out please know our town is incredibly proud of you and everything you give to make Batavia a better place I am honored to serve as a board member in a district with such amazing teachers and staff I hope we as a community and a district recognize excellence in our staff when we find it and do everything we can to elevate these folks and learn from them when it comes to classroom success they are examples we should promote and encourage we are extremely fortunate to have such teachers who are willing to sacrifice so much of themselves for our children in today's environment teachers are in short supply and we should be thankful when such amazing teachers choose to stay here from the bottom of my heart thank you for all the hard work you do and the amazing positive influence you have on our children staff and Community thank you for personally teaching my children and making them better human beings these awards are well deserved thank you for sharing your skills with our community thank you I know we've got a number within the audience who were honored could you guys stand up just so everyone can see who you are [Applause] all right that was amazing we'd love to start with celebrations uh the next item on our agenda is public comment I do believe we have someone here who let's call tonight's meeting to order a thief yeah bulk present yes Nolan yep Henner yes Rave here Gorman here I need a motion second to approve tonight's agenda so moved second yes Falk yes Hemphill yes Nolan yes henr yes Ray yes Garmin yes all right please join us in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance to the pride of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands one nation under God individual with liberty and justice for all thank everyone for coming out um everybody at home watching our YouTube channel um Dr CERN what recognitions that'll follow um our public comments so welcome uh everyone who came out tonight to join us so camera all right we have one public comment my man I'm kind of interested in and so in fiscal I see a Treasures reporter we are we gonna be in here for that when you guys are given that are we leaving for that yeah well I'm kind of hoping that if you talking about that I'd like to know where the money goes that you didn't have to spend during covet for one thing you know where those expenditures are and who's on that um I'm kind of concerned as a taxpayer here that we're paying a lot of money to the schools and we can see private schools with less money doing a better education so um I'd like to see some more fiscal responsibility here and a more accountability and a board that's going to hold School leaders accountable all right and we've got an election coming up and I know there's a writing candidate I want to talk to but um that's kind of the main thing I want to discuss and again if you have information on what you've you know didn't spend during the covet and where that money went to we'd like to see that okay thank you is here to recognize our some athletes don't be shy Grace it's okay coaches all right just gonna have to circle around Circle right look at this place all right good evening everybody I am getting to fill in for athletic director Jeske so I get to steal a little bit of his Thunder uh we've had quite a bit of success in the area of Athletics and activities recently and so I want to start I'm going to go a little bit out of order here I want to start with our cheer program so up with me I have our Varsity uh cheerleading program accompanied by our two assistant coaches uh Meredith and Emily Herring uh coach Marciniak was not able to make it uh this evening due to a prior commitment a little bit of uh highlight for cheer is they want they were sectional champs this year and that qualified them for the state finals for the sixth straight year so uh qualifying for the state finals for six to eight years is is crazy I've been at the high school for eight years and just to let you know what a great job all of our our athletes and our coaches have done uh about seven years ago we struggled to even uh you know have a sideline cheer for basketball which uh all of a sudden we get to the point where it's difficult to even feel the cheer team to the point where six straight years uh in this year um they made day two and um they've done that four out of the six years so the way that cheerleading competition Works downstate is you have to qualify I believe top ten to make day two so they not only if they qualified for six years they've made day two uh four of those six years and uh this year uh they had the highest finish in school history which I believe was fifth place downstate so congratulations and if you ever get a chance to visit the field house while they practice it is actually just something else I would really put them up with a lot of college cheer programs so congratulations you told them they've got to stick around for the whole meeting yes I did we're going to quiz them on the on the uh thank you yeah so in addition to cheer we had a very successful Dance season and so this is um only the second year a dance program had to compete in the higher division downstate and they placed 15th so just like cheer top 10 make day two again uh you know you know coach Jensen and even coach Rupert before her you know I'd like to kind of paint a picture for you my first year at the high school the dance team failed that four dancers and so we go from that to some incredible dance coaches some incredible athletes uh making some pretty routine appearances downstate and now they are up a division so the competition is a little bit greater so to uh Place 15th uh they're right there on the precipice of making day two and again that dance program has grown Leaps and Bounds and I would put that right up there with any of the the large schools around so I don't know if we have any dancers here I don't think they were able to make it this evening but uh I wanted to congratulate our dance program for an amazing season [Applause] it's not just a with our sports that we're seeing success next I'd like to highlight out of our fine arts department the i-i-l-m-e-a students who were able to audition for a prestigious program downstate so these students needed to submit an audition online which is then scored and the top kids from each district we are district nine get to perform at the All-Star at the All-State performance in Peoria students submit auditions from all over Illinois to be in this our Central students who placed for District 9 were chaitan greywall who went for the choir and Jacob brayla who went for the honors band the kids were surrounded by other talented musicians and were able to learn different techniques while they were there if we have any members of IML e-i-l-m-e-a here I don't know if they're here they're probably practicing because they have a big musical event coming up and I think they both participate there as well uh so I'd like to congratulate them and also talk about what an amazing job our Fine Arts crew does with our music program uh I will tell you it's pretty renowned around in the Fox Valley principles are are really amazed with the talent that we have so congratulations [Applause] so I have some more acronyms here uh the next recognition we have is for ihstf the Illinois High School theater Festival which is held at UIC these students were sponsored by Miss Heckman it is the largest non-competitive theater Fest in the country while they're while they're while there our students rehearsed and performed for other students from all over the state our students perform seven shows of Shrek in three days so seven shows in three days is crazy uh but they they had a blast and um 300 kids auditioned for this and only 60 made it to the cast wow so you're talking about some of the top performers in the state so of the top 360 60 qualified uh students also had the show portfolios from CHS Productions that they had uh created to be chosen there were only a total of 127 company members from cast and crew Jack Jack Winkle hockey was in the cast Jenna demell was in props and run crew and Rachel Burton was in costume design so we got three in the Productions uh do I have any of those students here I know Mr strike was also very busy Planet they're planning on our musical as well but I wanted to just really highlight what an incredible feat that was so you have some of the top of the top attending Central High School in the world of uh music and theater so congratulations [Applause] thank you Dr testone thank you good job ladies all right about the action reports we need a motion in second to discuss and approve the consent agenda some moved second reports revenues are currently at 41.89 compared to 39.22 a year ago expenditures are a little bit up from last year they're at 46.40 compared to 44.57 percent since last board meeting we received impact fees for 68 000 98.46 for 10 home starts no transition fees this month the bills payable for both Northern Kane and Central for the month of February are they're actually a little heavier than I think I think usually February is my lightest month and there was a sizable amount in there The Early Childhood grant that we apply for back in the fall to try to get some playground extensions on our three elementaries we were denied but they said that if there was another round that opens up if more funding comes through or people don't end up using the ones that did get awarded that will we can try to still apply for it again so there's no feedback on that it's just try again pretty much okay yep and then the school maintenance project Grant I think I had said that we were already approved for but we actually did get the fifty thousand dollars so we do have that sitting in our accounts and that is for the hbt generator and then another exciting piece of news um all the buses that we bid last fall spring we finally got them all so we got rid of all of the old ones got all our new ones all right folk yes yes Nolan yes NR yes Rabe yes yes Lexington motion second to discuss and approve the resolution for dismissal of part-time teachers some of you good evening everyone here we go good evening uh so you should have in your board packet a resolution for the dismissal of part-time teachers this is an annual process that we go through each year in the district it's presented for your signature your approval and your signature questions two questions hemp film yes Nolan yes enter yes rape yes Effie yes folk yes Gorman yes all right next we need a motion a second to discuss and approve the resolution for dismissal of first second third year teachers and again in your board packet uh again oh sorry so moved second sorry okay now um another annual process that we go through in the district um again presented for your approval and then your signature questions Nolan yes Henner yes Rabe yes Effie yes folk yes and Phil yes Gorman yes all right next Motion in second support discuss and approve the donation from the National FFA to Central's FFA chapter second I thought you're just assuming I did not well in that case yeah go there you go come on Dr Nolan keep up with it so in your board packet you also um have a memo for National FFA gave us 500 um they offer assistance to um other chapters through some scoring rubric and then we are awarded this 500 and it'll be used to help offset student expenses at the hotels for state and their chapter Leadership Retreat all right Penner yes Rabe yes a thief yes bulk yes and Phil yes Nolan yep Gorman yes our next emotion and second it required to discuss and approve the i-l-m-e-a overnight trip that occurred January 25th to the 27th she'll move second that was um that was one of the trips that Dr tostoni was discussing and highlighting with our students rape yes a thief yes bulk yes Hemphill yes Nolan yes Penner yes Gorman yes next emotion and secular needed to discuss and approve the dance overnight trip that occurred January 26th through the 29th still moved second again this goes along with what we highlighted the same with the next action both letters g and letter h okay a thief yes bulk yes Enfield yes Nolan yep Henner yes rape yes Gorman yes and then next is the motion and second is required to prove the cheer overnight trip that occurred February 2nd through the fourth it's almost second yeah we'll just go right into it man folk yes and Phil Henner yes Rabe yes a thief yes Gorman yes another motion second are needed to discuss and approve the wrestling overnight trip that occurred February 10th till May 11th sacking yes Nolan yes Penner yes rape yes a thief yes folk yes Gorman yes next we need a motion second to discuss and approve the new veterinarian affiliation agreement it's almost second all right Nolan yes NR yes rape yes a thief yes bulk yes and Phil yes Gorman yes practice emotion second or need to discuss and approve the sixth grade social studies textbook that was presented last month okay so moved second so the book has been on display for public viewing for the required amount of time we are replacing the 2004 version of the TCL a different curriculum we did the research on finding that this book aligns better with our curriculum also comes with our standard electronic version and provides supplementary material to provide some different activities that could increase our engagement within that social studies curriculum for sixth grade classroom sets will be purchased for inside the building and all of our students have will access via their Chromebooks online so the licenses are separate or they're all together it's all together with the purchase it's together with one purchase so the the agreed upon purchase is going to cover not only the the necessary books for each classroom but then the electronic licenses for the years moving forward yeah because they're issued to each student okay all right thank you all right it's penar yes rape yes a thief yes folk yes and Phil yes Nolan yes Gorman yes or move on to information items uh first the district enrollment report something of notice that we had 42 uh early grants so we had 42 early grads uh this year which um is even higher than last year last year we had a large number I think it was around 38 early grads so these are students who completed all their uh required coursework and can go on either you know begin college or technical school or early or going to the workforce as well I forgot when we voted to decrease the credits was that for this current graduating class was it immediate okay even with our 42 early grads we're still from this point a year ago we're still up 140 146 students so I'm still fairly significant talks about the growth that continues to come our way um as Dana mentioned earlier with the home starts permits continue to be issued so all right thank you Dr Stern so we're going to Smart procure to quarterly requests and uh Dana probably was able to respond sorry I went on before sorry yeah uh King County Institute day so uh March 3rd and March 4th are two big dates coming up First Central District 301 March 3rd is our Kane County Institute day and as a district we've determined that staff will stay in-house working on diversity equality and inclusion we have four different presenters that are presenting um that day we have our student population who have come forth have been a committee that we've been working with every Wednesday morning for the voices within they'll be doing a presentation talking about their experiences as well as they've done some videotaping of students just to get a take on how their experienced within our district has been we have Kim paulus and Mike Doyle will be presenting some visible learning strategies relevant to instruction as well as removing labels a book that's out there talking about best practices for instructional practices to make sure that we're engaging for all youth we have Dr Nolan as well as one of his associates coming in to talk uh for the lgbtq plus community and then we have Dr Moulton who is an individual coming to talk about kind of resiliency how to work with the differences coming out of covert social emotional learning as well as the differences within student populations and we are looking at having him come back next year to work with our entire faculty as part of our PD for next year as we continue to expand that's March 3rd we are kind of combining March 3rd and fourth in that we are developing different hallways to really promote different backgrounds races ethnicities those types of elements so people can experience different countries students are working on putting those things together in terms of the hallway so staff can walk through those hallways but they'll be kept up for the March 4th Saturday event as well we have four different food groups coming in to kind of taste small plates for our faculty to experience different ethnic foods from the countries that we're speaking about as well on March 3rd which is Friday as well as breakfast which would be served as more of an ethnic background as well so staying away from General American culture and trying to give exposure to those types of elements as well as we'll have candies from across your snacks from across these different communities so in fact they can experience those teas coffees Etc so that's kind of March 3rd March 4th we're still working with the student population every Wednesday morning we keep teasing this like a big wedding trying to pull on this together with a lot of students we have about 125 to 140 plus volunteers coming together to help pull this event off we have a lot of performances that will be happening during that day from different different groups as well as with Expo expositions and we have culture booths that are coming up we have some pop-up shops so a lot of things happening within the the day for March Forest warming people can come out and enjoy the day but we're very excited about that if you have anything to add from the community work you've got it yeah what time does it start and where do you enter oh boy uh it starts at 11 to 4.

order roll call please Brown is here Mrs galbert here I'll let it go a little Dr Hall here Mr sawales here Mrs Walters vice president Rue here president Albert here please stand and join me in the Pledge of Allegiance I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands one nation under God indivisible liberty and justice for all and Mr would you please read our mission statement sure if we want to empower each student to positively impact the world for a bright new future okay next up is public comment we have one Ezekiel Israel and the topic is the acknowledgment of our creator you you have three minutes thank you thank you peace be with you all and I grew up uh grew up here um went to Balmoral Elementary when I was a child and I'm concerned about our society and you know when a society fails to acknowledge God its creator It ultimately comes to its end right we see we've seen this happen with Egypt with Babylon with me to Persia with Greece and with Rome and in the very core of our Declaration of Independence it states we hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal that they are endowed by their creator the very acknowledgment of the Creator is in embedded in our Declaration of Independence and while we've started with these foundational truths of acknowledging our creator I'm very concerned because you know we're seeing a lot of crime and a lot of problems uh a lot of gun violence growing growing um mass shootings in our schools right and I believe these things are happening because we're becoming more distant from our creator when we teach our children to acknowledge God and that God sees all things and that he will judge everyone at some point in time according to their deeds it can help brittle the lusts of evil actions in our children okay but when our children are taught not to acknowledge God taught that they come from monkeys okay well well then why do you expect that how do you expect the child not to act like a wild monkey right so uh we need to get back to the acknowledgment of our creator and and acknowledging him in our our schools and I know that that may not be a practice but it's it's got to become one it's got to become one because if we don't our society which is the greatest greatest country on the Earth right now okay is going to fall into depravity like these other historical societies that fail to acknowledge their creator and how we do that how we Implement that that can be open for discussion but we have to get back to the drawing board and we need to get back to working how we can can acknowledge God be thankful to him for all that he's done for us and and and getting that in instilled in our in our children okay 30 seconds okay 15 15.
