Life takes us all down different paths. We must find our own way for our own life, no matter how similar they may be. Have faith in yourself. Even if you cannot see what lies ahead, it is there waiting for you. Last words of advice. True happiness does not depend on how much wealth you possess. Happiness is totally circumstantial. Surrounding yourselves with a supportive community is what helps you thrive. Money and material wealth are not fulfilling human needs, but social connections, safety, and education are. In the words of Nelson Mandela, education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world. Thank you all again for having me and I wish you all the best in your future endeavors. Congratulations to the new inductees of this year's National Honor Society. At this time, it gives me great pleasure to bring to the podium Maline Padija, the chapter president to preside over the candle lighting ceremony.

So we are on track for that and we'll have the exact numbers for you when the 2023 report comes out on act 158 in July. So um this is for financial literacy or computer science. Thank you Heidi. Another question. Sure. So Heidi, I know that there is a lot of push for early college and a lot of the kids um who feel pressured because the pressure is put on them at an early age to determine what they're going to major in or what is their life profession and so forth. Uh and many of them are not don't have the time to really enjoy high school. So, does that also affect the fact that if they're going to be doing early college, then all of these electives are that they're not able to take the electives or that if we're going to increase the the um graduation requirements, how does how does early college compete or work with with some of these requirements, right?

[Applause] The membership of the National, excuse me, the membership of the Greater Lawrence Technical School chapter of the National Honor Society has been earned by the effective demonstration of the four qualities held in high esteem by the society. Four of the members will receive these qualities for the candidates. Scholarship, leadership, character, and service. At this time, it gives me great pleasure to invite a Stephanie Mayorgga Pradomo to the podium to discuss the qualifications of scholarship and Adam and Kolingo to the light to light the scholarship ceremonial candle. Scholarship means a commitment to learning. Students are willing to spend hours in reading and study. Knowing the lasting benefits of cultivated mind, we should continue to learn even when formal education has ended. For education ends only only with the end of life. Knowledge is one great element in life which leads to the high success. It can be acquired in only one way through diligence and effort.

and and I I think there's value in all. We we don't force any student and we we want to be cognizant of that to take early college courses but there are some students who do want to take early college courses. So I think the array of offerings that we can provide to our students um the larger the array the best but we we don't want to um pigeonhold any student in one track nor do we um expect them to decide on their career. We want to expose them to a variety um all of the offerings that are out there and let them choose their own pathway. I I realize that this the DOE itself does not put the pressure but peer pressure, family pressure, and then we wonder why our kids get to college and they need psychologists and they need therapy. Um, and we're seeing more and more of that.

Learning furnishes the lamp by which we read the past and the light illuminates the future. Candidates have the charge to continually expand their world through the opportunities inherited in scholarship. At this time, it gives me pleasure to invite to the podium Lani Sanchez to discuss the qualifications for leadership in Alexander Shapiro to light the ceremonial candle. Leadership should exert wholesome influence on the school. In taking the initiative in class and school activities, the real leader tries to train and aid others to obtain the same objective. The price of leadership is the sacrifice, the willingness to yield one's personal interest for the interest of others. A leader has self-confidence and will go forward when others hesitate. No matter what power and resources may exist in a country, they're ineffectual without the guidance of a leader of a wise leader. I mean, leadership should I mean, excuse me, leadership is always needed thus a thus to lead a subtainive charge to each of the members.

At this time, it gives me pleasure to invite Lisa Seedo to the podium to discuss the qualification of character and Christine Seder to light the ceremonial candle. Character. Character is the force within each individual which distinguishes that person from others. It gives each of us our individuality. It is without that no one can respect oneself nor hope to attain the respect of others. It is this force of character that guides one through life and when once develop grows steadily. Characters is achieved and not received. It is a product of constant action striving daily to make the right choice. The problem of character is the problem of self-control. We must be in reality what we wish to appear to others. By demonstrating such qualities such as respect, responsibility, trustworthiness, fairness, caring, and citizenship, we may hope to prove by example that we value character. about amending the agenda since we had a request to add a resolution um another one that I think the commission hasn't seen yet do I do we approve the agenda first and then motion to amend it I always forget um we'll move and second to approve the agenda and then we'll move in second to do an amendment and then you'll vote on the amendment and then at the end you'll vote on the amended agenda are you is there a different Amendment than you had emailed about with the carbon monoxide or is that the one that's the one okay perfect thank you yes so is there a motion to approve the agenda so I moved uh motion my Jeff okay uh do we have a second second by Lucy so I will motion to amend the agenda to add on a resolution that is endorsing um a version of the carbon monoxide detector requirement proposed by council member Cornell who presented at our last meeting foreign do we have a second for that motion okay I think I heard Nick first um great so all those in favor of amending the agenda to include that resolution um say I I okay all those opposed say okay with that the resolution uh is included in our in our agenda and the agenda's uh amended I will present that and we can go through the language it's uh you know before we start discussing it um okay so now we have to approve the amended agenda uh so all those in favor of approving the amended agenda say I I am all those opposed say nay okay with that the amended agenda is adopted Christian did I do that right um really good job um one thing I would like to clarify where on the agenda you'd like to have this item you want to have it um yes we have several business items tonight um maybe um with the other resolution so they're kind of like the two action items are together in case anyone's calling in the speak don't have to sure yeah so that would be six step we would add this on a 6-c a d excuse me D after that one and then push DNE to enf right yeah so added after the um sorry I'm pulling up my agenda yes right after 8C um then at the Natural Gas not eight six sorry oh I'm sorry did I mess that up so let's put it on the agenda between um the resolution and support of the ordinance to ban natural gas and the um discussion apartment wait list so it'll be um the new 6D the rest will move down yeah thank you awesome perfect okay I'll try to remember that when we get to that part agenda great all right um just go back to the agenda now so now we need to approve our previous meetings minutes so we have the minutes from our February 16th meeting 2023.

containers to drop an egg if anyone survived they got to go on I can't think of it the stretcher up Mr Kendall dropped him we had a lot of people that created great designs to have their egg survive so there wasn't One winner but everyone won with just the tremendous design to keep those eggs safe and we all know eggs are like 50 each and it really helps out uh I also had a picture of the sixth grade doing the peppered moth lab this is to investigate how camouflage affects the survival chances of an organism the adaption and natural selection basically we they had to put on these glasses and then they had to use tweezers on their nose and they couldn't really see what they were picking up and how they're picking it up and then some of the colors were the same as the colors that were on the paper so it was very challenging they seemed to really enjoy themselves it was very interactive and Biz loved it uh my second slide is of the 8th graders at Eagle View we send them over once a month they're creating children's books they're developing great relationships you see all the Acres go in and they have this I'm so cool mentality then when they see these young kids they're like oh my gosh and their heart melts and they're just so sweet and lovely and the Eagle View will be coming over on March 31st we're going to be adopting bunnies they'll get a little uh stuff rabbit and then we're gonna see about possibly bringing in real rabbits we're deciding about that my third lovely slide is our um projects our service projects that our schools our grades did our fifth grade did treats for troops our sixth grade worked with the human support services for canned food drive our seventh grade worked with Berea Nursing Home in our eighth grade collected items for helping strays presentations were lovely it was great to have an assembly where students were paying attention listening and I think they were really moved by everything that was said otherwise I believe that's good anything from the Salem stargazing night is next week Friday the 24th at 7 30 p.m at the Salt Lick Trailhead if you're interested there's a big parking lot there and then a field right across from the parking lot and the Riverbend astronomy club is going to be coming with their giant telescopes and we're just working on finalizing the goodie bags contents so it'll be a fun night what time did you say that was 7 30 just to get in and get settled while we have a little light left and we'll go from there perfect also we're doing iir testing next week so if you see any students remind them to charge their Chromebook get a lot of sleep and bring a extra book oh and headphones and headphones yes please bring your headphones perfect thank you all right we're on to our assistant superintendent report like Jake said on my lovely slide you would see that um so a couple of shout outs I just want to give I'm starting at the high school our new nurse um Jenny Rao she has just stepped in and done a phenomenal job she not only you know jumped in to help get all of the paperwork that had been piling up since we didn't have a nurse to start the year off with but she has been instrumental in helping us as a district help come up with some different policies and procedures for next year as far as making sure that we can serve our students and our staff in the best way so she has just been a a blessing and a great addition to our our staff here at the middle school I wanted to give a shout out to one of our custodians Tom writerski the administration at the middle school has actually received several comments a couple from parents and staff but also a couple from students who have reached out and just said how much they appreciate Mr Tom that he goes above and beyond and helping it is no there's no time that you won't see him somewhere doing something that you wouldn't think of he was in the cafeteria the other day helping with condiments and opening ketchup packets and cleaning up things but he also is right there when we at the fifth grade band concert the other day helping set up and making sure that we can accommodate what we need to so it's just he is a a true blessing to have at the middle school and and helps out with whatever he can whenever at Eagleview I want to give a shout out to Robin Seiler our secretary um I'm sorry at Parkview they always talk about um write your you know Administration likes to think that they're really the ones calling the shots when really it's the secretaries that we know run the buildings um and I would say Mr Dugan has said over and over again that he would be lost without um Robin in the office she does a phenomenal job and again she is another one that is not only doing everything that you would think of in the office but is all over the place filling in taking pictures doing whatever she can so she is phenomenal and then last at Eagleview I want to give a shout out to one of our kindergarten teachers Michelle erkey so we last month as part of our professional development did we talked about inclusion and not just students with IEPs but all students and really talked about getting rid of those labels that there's right they're all students and they're all our students there's no yours or mine they're all our students and in Michelle's room she has partnered up with Tiffany dill and she brings in The Kindergartners out of Tiffany's class in the morning to do morning meeting and when you go in there you really do have no idea which students are from which classroom they all participate they all are asked the same questions but she also is doing a lot of teaching them life skills and you know introducing yourselves to people and talking to them and asking questions and they give a lot of would you rather if they play would you rather every day so the other day I was in there and it was would you rather be a pirate or go on a treasure hunt but they not only answer that but they had to give their reasons why and again those kids are so used to being in there and sharing their experiences that um every kid was raising their hand to participate and it was just awesome to see something that we had been talking about in our PD blend into it's already being done in a lot of our classrooms and she's not an isolated incident but I just happened to be in her room during morning meeting and it jumped out at me so um other than that the only other thing I was really going to share is we do start like Mr Elliott said we start State Testing next week for our second through eighth graders so they'll do the iar with math and reading tests so we're just getting ready making sure the kids have Chromebooks charged you know like he said get a good night's sleep get a good breakfast um but we're really looking to see and have another data point to be able to compare how much further our students are overcoming what the struggles that they went through during covid so we're excited to see them do their best on those tests that is all I have for tonight what hello all right um I'm gonna kind of follow suit with a shout out and say how important administrative assistants are Kimberly Johnson um I want to thank her for relentlessly attacking the recycle company if you haven't seen the recycle bins around our buildings they've been full no one knows how they've ever gotten there they were there when I was hired they were they've just always been there and they've always been full and every once in a while they might get emptied but no one knew like who was in control of them literally Kimberly called I think every other day for a few weeks until they finally gave up and we are now getting it emptied on a regular basis so our recycle bins are now open for the public to start putting things back into them I also want to thank Kurt Steve and his guys because while they were full and we had wind they would open up and so he finally just took Saran Wrap and wrapped the build wrapped them because they were blowing everywhere and we were trying to figure out who it's the little things in life are sometimes the hardest to get done but uh it's Relentless and it's just you just keep going until it happens and right now I'm glad to say that our recycling bins are being emptied on a regular schedule um also Foundation we have a foundation I will tell you I have started a foundation in other districts and you never want your foundation to lapse it takes a lot of work and so I am currently looking for um some individuals who would like to serve on a maybe a quarterly board or where we would be working on Foundation stuff um I certainly welcome those that are stepping down from the school board leadership to um maybe have a less frequent board meeting with this Foundation but I will take anyone if you're interested call the district office um those are the really the two things I've got I volunteer Scott and Tammy perfect all right move on to items for Action the first one is the approval of the 2023-2024 student fees yeah um we're not making any changes to the student fees again um I wish I could tell you that covid hadn't caused revenues and expenditures to be all crazy but we are doing fine there's no reason to raise the fees at this point in time the recommendation is to keep them as presented with no changes perfect any questions comments concerns maybe like to make a motion to approve the student fees I'll make the motion Thank you Lisa sorry second I'll second I'll actually beat you out for 30 seconds roll call please yes Craig Meyer that middle camp aye Mr Schumacher yes Tyson search yes yes very unanimous our next Item B is the approval for the non-tenured teachers yes and I want to note that you have a new list at your place there was a name that was taken off um one of the most important things is to um to make sure that we allow tenure to happen it's a very serious decision and so I took one name off we are looking into that a situation and I will bring it back to the board later for consideration but at this time uh the new list that is presented to the board I recommend that you approve with that slight adjustment any questions would anybody like to make a motion to approve the revised non-tenured list thank you you got one in there and a second a second seconds uh roll call please Lisa Schumacher yes Tyson search yes yes Andrea Corey yes Greg Meyer yes Batman okay all right the last item for Action this evening is the approval of the ihsa membership for 23.24 yes and we are a member of ihsa it allows our athletes to participate there is um they are back to not charging any fees and so um at that price I recommend strongly that we continue our membership with the ihsa also in the communications that went around for for the public that Mr Horner received a nice letter from ihsa graduated is on the second place finish of the cheerleading squad so well done very nice letter yes nice good little recognition for hard work so thank you what any questions would it be like to make a motion to approve our membership for this year I'll make the motion sorry a second it's got seconds a roll call please search yes yes Tammy Hein yes Andrea Corey yes Brad Meyer yes Scott Middle Camp hi Lisa Schumacher yes perfect for unanimous again that concludes our irons for Action we'll go on to discussion items for start with our facility study uh yeah we had a meeting today with Cobalt Mr Myers and Mr Hamilton we're both participating in that we are moving along we've now engaged them um and we're looking at starting the scope of work um do you gentlemen have anything to say about the meetings we've had so far I'm not I'm stuck though okay I can barely talk other than the contract being no I tell you what we idolized you know we met with Cobalt and uh our board's attorney today and and it's it's funds watching the reaction of our board's attorney how excited he is about the process that we're doing we're kind of stepping outside the box and doing stuff that no one really has done before having an owner's rep and you know in my experience when you're prepared for something is so much the project just goes so much better start to finish and Cobalt has really performed um they're they're very impressive they're reminding us a lot of things that we would have never thought about and incorporated into the contract and and uh just it's gonna it's gonna be a huge Money Saver overall but uh it's it's nice to be really kind of on The Cutting Edge of something in the head of the game for a change so I was very pleased with them and it's really moving along very smoothly so they also did a cost analysis and you know we kind of did our own in our Architects as well as building a new school versus renovating the high school and so we had them do some backup numbers independently of ours and the conclusion was was the same even more so that the decision we made was was a good one and it's much more cost effective to redo the high school than it is to build build news so it's uh it's always good to have checks and balances though and and viewpoints that we don't necessarily see so I think it's working out really well that was a question at the town hall right Scott what's that if the home rule was going to be supporting the construction of our high school yeah I mean we just yeah it was like no that's too good day so taxes are two totally separate things and we have facility sales tax right it was just interesting that somebody brought that up for the um uh for the county so yeah it's getting people to understand what how it works is far where they go what goes on pretty hard complex yeah so the facility study right onto our individual board member comments and we have anything they'd like to say I have two things awesome um real quick uh we've kind of gotten away from inviting the new hirees to attending the school board meeting so we can put a face with the name if we could kind of get back to doing that we haven't done that for the last several months what we were thinking was we'd have a big event in August and have everyone come and have maybe some cake and so that you'd not be able to just see a name but you'd be able to meet them and and have some discussion beforehand and so that's kind of what we were thinking and I did not communicate that with you all and I apologize thank you second thing is um we got I got a phone call and we received kind of a good new shout out for the Columbia School District as far as Waterloo lost a young teacher to cancer and we were gave having substitutes that day or whatever so that Waterloo could have all the substitutes therefore they could attend the funeral so they've really been praising the Columbia School District that and I don't know where that came down from if if you said something if Alyssa said something or I I think everybody said something and and it's I mean I'm glad that they're praising us it's sad that our society's gotten to the point where those kind of normal actions are surprised but thank you for bringing that up though yeah anyone else all right prison prerogative you guys heard me talk way too much tonight so I'll spare you of any more of that we do have executive sessions so we're going to go into the executive session for the purposes of the appointment employment compensation discipline performance or dismissal of a specific employee of the public body or legal counsel for the public body including hearing testimony on a complaint Lodge against the employee of the public body or against the legal counsel for the public body to determine this validity this five ilcs 120-2c1 that would anybody like to adjourn it to Executive session in a motion I'll make the motion Thank you Lisa to wait a second oh second every seconds and roll call please yes Corey in the bar lights off Craig Meyer yes yes perfect we're going to adjourn it to Executive session which means that we do have to ask our visitors to departos we do have two items for Action as a result so you're all welcome to rejoin when we come back in Open Session
