yeah I remember that because of the late the late registrations late registrations hurt us yeah there's a lot of houses judging how many buses we need in and it does change every year right every year generally we we don't always keep the same stops and that that tends to upset people but if there's just less students you know trying to build this establish fruits so kids aren't waiting as long yeah but I'm not saying we're changing yours but you know it's just a question of you know we wrap it based on what's there that's a very established neighborhood yes it's an established neighborhood we typically have the the reasonably large amount of kids yeah well I mean we're all do a little basically yeah but but even as a age out of there oh yeah that's that's so we have had it's a talent we've had actually a box come in a few years ago that came in off of um Higgins Higgins and came up and looped around it what's the lower Bellamy yeah look around Bellamy and that looked out there just to take that girl yeah that was when I first started maybe eight or nine years yeah that would make sense because those kids are in high school high school in college that would be like the whole season because there were so many kids up there yeah yeah so we just wanted to touch base because the email is just the pain yeah it's like just yeah you know so now we know what to do with the photos and where to go from there um when the C position comes out which I feel like so we asked for them by June June 15th okay July 23rd but what we do with them is we kind of put a check mark next to the names and they sit there until we get a um start getting an idea of the count of eligible students okay then we kind of start filtering them in and we do do them first come first serve okay so you get it in it goes on top okay which we have some already how do we have them it doesn't even have the data on it they're doing the same thing that you guys are doing no no you there's the there's an event the available seat you can get to oh you know why because they're redoing so the available seat now has blank space you can put in your own dates and except that's that's what it is that we're updating the other foreign um so this was obviously um for discussion you can review the policy and if we want to add it if there's anything you want to tweak I don't even Luther has seen some things that he's thought about so we'll review it again before the next meeting and you guys can take a look at it and if you want to add it you know I'll touch base with you about the agenda um I I think I would reading if we wanted to I mean I think I would uh because just because you know they're talking about you know if you've made a petition I know there have been several parents this year that have have had extensive petitions and to do it year over year because it sounded like some of the parents that have come back to us are current available seat right so you know we can't guarantee that you have an available seat and so we know next year's place it is these are people by policy who don't live you know in the busing area they live in the walking area right and so they ask if there's an available seat we you know if we decide I guess we could decide once you're granted an available seat you have it for the life of your entire time in the elementary school you know students move in and stuff that you know that's adding adding seats that's adding people to the bus which may ultimately impact costs right because you'd have to add pretty much in other routes and also to cover the kids and to be fair you know has been said we're almost able to meet every single available seat petition it takes a lot of doing but we try and jump through those hoops and make it happen so in the past we haven't added additional routes to make it happen is my point I I think we denied three this year now they were only denied in the AM to start we were able to accommodate the afternoon and ultimately with the bigger bus we were able to accommodate amn team I believe there were two other uh families that we had that then I completely one was in Doolittle one was Norton and that was it we're either at the one mile Mark they were over okay so here's my question for you if it's okay Adam yeah could you would this be difficult to look at the total potential impact of not changing the distance but just tweaking our rule for the point of measurement to what distance yeah like if you're changing the rule you're changing the distance why would you like to change the distance all right so let me try to think this through like to the driver I mean ultimately uh if we if it's easier for us frankly to tell you if we made it three quarters of a mile across the border it's expensive no I don't know I don't know it's gonna cost money if so it's hard to say at this stage of the game so let's just take next year it probably wouldn't have that much of an impact what is our elementary school population grows it could have a major impact but we just don't know sure no I get it we just don't know but every year is is a is a crap shooting until we know where every student until every student's registered and we know where they live and and let's tell in the future there is my point is you can't do that I mean one of the things that is prevented us from having to add bus routes is the god population we're able to shift Don buses to other second tier Local Schools such as Doolittle and Chapman because they're on the same schedule correct but as our as we know our population especially at the Doolittle Highland and Chapman locations are growing and as the kids that we have now shift into dot we won't have that luxury we will be adding buses so if you do begin to reduce the walking distances that could impact even more buses but we just don't know but those buses will be electric so yeah the serious question on a related note how many more buses can you put into the Depot right now no electric vehicles how many more buses can you put in there we really have no room so we have to expand the depot we it's so I've got an acre for right yeah oh yeah we got a lot so we have the space okay so you're good on that I've been here 12 years and it was discussed 10 years before I got here and there it's the room that it's the the land that runs from it runs uh east of the the bus depot there's a wooded area it almost doubles the size of the property okay um so that's going to be a capital Improvement at some point this year next year or something yeah okay okay can we get a secret for that I just remember remember 180 000.

um the project five years after uh the project was up and operating they did an analysis and they determined that teachers that had lived at this community were three times as likely to stay with the school district than teachers who of the same tenure that didn't live there so this had a number of impacts number one there was less turnover in the classroom number two um the recruiting and training costs decreased they figured that they saved four turnovers every year by through this project through those 40 units and um their estimate was that it saved them 60 to 75 000 per turnover and so the general fund benefited to the tune of uh quarter million to 300 000 a year um and ultimately they were also at the time where their test scores were improving so this program was so successful that they proceeded to increase the project by another 30 units and that project was completed in 2009 so now they have 70 units there's roughly 100 teachers plus or minus that will live there in any uh point in time there's obviously some roommate situations moving forward we've been retained more recently by the state of California and we're working with the Marin County Office of Education to build a 135 units of Workforce housing in Marin County we were retained for a surplus site that state controls that's part of San Quentin and the objective there is to create a again a Workforce housing community that will offer lower rents but high quality housing and attract more bypoc Educators as well as help District employees current District employees they're commuting across the county or across a bridge to get to Marin which has similar to Santa Clara County a very high cost of living moving forward project phases we're going to talk more about this but here's the project phases going from feasibility to entitlements permitting construction operations I give that as the big overview and we're going to talk more about feasibility specifically but the first thing is to meet with the district understand uh your objectives are you operating this strictly to offer the lowest rents possible to your employees or are you seeking to um generate uh cash flow the most important things for districts typically is that these be Revenue neutral at uh the worst and revenue positive if possible there are three prongs to um the stool or three likes to the school that we evaluate in our feasibility process one is political zoning the second is the physical due diligence and the third gets into the economics and the architectural design once we complete the feasibility report you will have a cookbook that will allow you to um you know whether you retain us or someone else to actually build a project and realize uh the community that is outlined in the feasibility report and with that I think my time is up thank you so I will start off with the first question uh given the complexities in local zoning and permitting uh could you please tell the board about how your firm has helped client districts navigate the zoning and permitting process to ensure a timely start to the commencement of the Project's construction sure um actually it's a more complicated question than just entitlement uh in titlemen and Zoning is one element of it the second element is SQL and frankly with the passage of ab2295 which I'm sure you're familiar with which basically provides the right to build housing on your sites I think the entitlement issue goes away however sequa is um and yeah I'm sure you're familiar with the SQL process SQL is the issue that I think needs to be addressed and that seems to be uh for opponents of a project um uh the easier leg to attack but relative to um the entitlement process as a whole and working with the community we do a lot of Outreach uh so that we're trying to bring a community together early on in the process I mentioned about the political uh analysis we meet with the city to understand what their process is going to be and then finally as we're going through uh the feasibility process we will outline what's involved with permitting what elements you need to prepare and um you'll have a very detailed uh you know cookbook as I say for actually uh going through that process but we historically have taken the lead on that for the school districts and you know in keeping School Board apprised or School District staff apprised we you know they will run that process and again having done this for 75 different projects on a market rate basis it really is uh somewhat second nature to us thank you so much Christy Chavez there are always pros and cons when dealing with issues what has been the most consistent issue in dealing with districts while working on a project the pros and cons and how the issues were handled result and executed sure um I think I understand the question of what are the biggest issues that school districts have I think the single biggest issue is financing and to the extent that they don't have financing then the project seemed to get back burner to the extent that a school district has issued a Geo Bond that's a lot of commitment and that issue or that hurdle is resolved the second thing is um as you know I mean there's always something that comes up at a school board uh or for a school district I mean if it's not a pandemic it's a budget crisis it's not a budget crisis it's something else and what we try and encourage the school districts do is to create a champion somebody that acts as our go-between and with staff they're typically on staff to see this project through we'll carry the majority of the water to get a project done but we you know school districts once again when there's a bigger issue and we fully understand that building housing isn't necessarily a core mandate for the school district but at the same time um it we can move forward with that project with that process uh provided we get the approvals that we need periodically from the school board so I think that the main thing is communication and working closely thank you uh have you been the subject of Investigation related to any of your projects Department uh no we have not do I get an extra two minutes of my presentation that's right okay vice president what is the average timeline to complete a feasibility report um and again it's outlined in our presentation our feasibility reports and we've uh worked now with two dozen different districts it will take 90 to 120 days for a specific site we can do multiple feasibility studies uh simultaneously uh but that's about the time frame uh for getting it and again they're very detailed uh our feasibility studies they will have everything uh from uh an outline of you know all zoning and title related matters to um designs uh budgets uh pre-development budgets that relate both to the construction as well as the soft costs uh and the timing of uh when those dollars will be spent um so again I think that um with our feasibility report you'll be very close to uh having the material you need for an application uh to the city and City these generally are the groups that approve these we don't work with DSA uh or haven't in the past and you'll also be able to process SQL so that you're getting either an exemption if you're an infill site or a mitigated negdac um and again there's a lot of technical reports that are also part of these feasibility studies but again between 90 and 120 days that would all be completed thank you I'm going to be reading the next question okay on behalf of my uh peer that's not here based on your organization's experience what are the key roles and responsibilities for the district and for the consultant in achieving a transparent process that gains buy-in um do you want me to read it again yeah based on your organization's experience what are the key roles and responsibilities for the district and for the consultant in achieving a transparent process that gains by me okay so um we work at the behest of the school district however the school district wants uh to work with us whatever reporting they want uh if they want us to attend uh regular board meetings to present um uh we're more than happy to do that typically uh actually every school district has been a little bit different on how they've uh wanted to work with us some school districts have been more hands off um some have been uh have assigned someone to uh again I'll say a champion that's been part of our team meetings and um you know reports back uh up the chain um we prepare regular minutes for each one of our design meetings we circulate those there's a lot of communication that we Avail ourselves up um trying to um I I think that's pretty much the key elements I would say that major decisions and we set this up also up front relative to milestones we would come back and make a presentation to the board and those are very formal events and um we have again a lot of detailed information we're always available for uh questions thank you all right thank you so much for your time thank you thank you that concludes the interview if you can wait in the weight room and we'll call you when we're ready foreign thank you who all right call me right thank you as a reminder you have 10 minutes for the presentation and then another 10 minutes for the um questions um and just remind there's a display of the time to remind you uh to get your child track thank you wonderful thank you so you may start whenever you're ready well thank you we're happy to be here please to be able to present to you our company dcg strategies this is going we're going into our 19th year um we specialize in education entities this is what we do our entire firm is built a service public school districts we're a proud public benefit Corporation means that we have a Social and environmental mission in relation to this work one thing that we're extremely we're proud of is we're California School Board Association csba's exclusive real estate partner for Workforce housing in particular a few years ago casba did an extensive research on different Consultants because they felt that they wanted their members to have access to information and services from their perspective that would protected the district's best interest their process and said dcg will you partner with us to be our Statewide partner to provide resources education and consulting services to school districts in partnership with us so we're very proud of that because why that's important is because in in the space of Workforce housing there are a lot of different entities summer Builders some say we'll do the feasibility and we'll build others are are just studying sites as a for-profit mission but no one's really looking out for the best interest of the school district so that's what we do our entire focus is what is in the best interest of the school district so we don't build because there needs to be a check to what's what is a feasible site what are the appropriate numbers what is the appropriate governance and all those other things that a school district needs to know before it starts spending money on construction so um we've been around we have over three billion dollars in um assets that we've helped manage and I'll hand it over to Lauren to introduce ourselves all right so we'll go to page three of the packet um good evening everyone my name is Lauren Jennings and my official title is chief operations officer of dcg strategies um and so I just um I'll actually pass the microphone over to our team to introduce himself and then we'll head on through the rest of the presentation sure okay thanks thanks for having us appreciate the opportunity to be here my name is Carl moribito I'm the vice president of development services for dcg and I have an extensive background in residential development both um all sorts of densities and product types um in in building homes and and condos and multi-family units throughout California over my 30-year career um on the on the development side of the business but happy to now be associated with this group and open districts do what they need to do for their housing needs and school school property needs thank you now you go next hi I'm Megan McIver and my title is Vice President of real estate strategy at dcg my background is from a very large commercial real estate organization called jll where I was a vice president for many years working with typically International Capital coming into the United States and helping them to to Really navigate those markets understand the subtleties and then look at properties on a portfolio basis so that's really where my expertise lies in complex real estate finance and really trying to take a holistic view of many properties at the same time and understanding their strengths and weaknesses and really helping clients work through all of the details and all of the subtleties that they need to consider in knowing how to move forward whether that's investing or developing yeah well good well thank you but we really wanted to make sure that we introduced our team and highlighted um our internal expertise because we really feel that that is what sets us apart from um other entities uh we are all in service of you as a school district we always say that our role as we obviously do not make any decisions that's what your job is for um but we also say that we also um do not provide a full-on recommendations we can if you'd like us to but our role really is to provide reliable real estate and development data for you as a school board so that you in turn can make a fully informed decision and so we have the best of real estate the best of brokerage the best of Consulting and the best development in-house and we all work as a team to be able to make sure that we provide you with that reliable data and so we'll go to the next page page four yeah and following on from what Lauren just said um this slide is a snapshot of the services that we offer um this is really a suite of services and this is what we offer to school district clients every day um you can see that we offer employee housing feasibility studies development Consulting and asset management consulting so again we're taking a look at all of the assets that you have and looking at it from your perspective and just making seeing how they all fit um together as as a whole so we also you know have a great amount of experience and stakeholder engagement as well which is of course an important part in getting anything done in a school district so again we can offer all of this in-house so thank you next page page five just shows you high level just some of our sample clients we work with public school districts throughout the state of California and so we are extremely experienced specifically obviously in the Bay Area which is where we're located but we also do work with Southern California School Districts as well and then so going on to page six the six this is really where we wanted to focus um so our team we do have experience providing um really exactly what you're looking for in terms of the feasibility study analysis I would say the most recent we're working with a handful of five or six school districts currently right now on the exact same scope that you're asking for specifically which I'll call out which is on the page six here San Rafael City Schools our team recently worked with the school district where we analyzed five of their underutilized sites that they have and we determined that one of those sites um I always have to be careful what's public what's not public but we have determined that one of those sites um is preliminary preliminarily feasibility for employee housing and so our team has been engaged to complete a further analysis and determining um to the extent of what is feasible um and so this is just a sample of the employee housing and feasibility studies that we have done another recent school district is Berlin Game School District we present it to their board and study session our findings in September of 2022 and it was at literally the exact same scope that you guys are asking for so our team was completely experienced and able to provide that the the page seven is really where I want to focus on this is what we deem in terms of a process flow of how do you get to employee housing right I do feel like employee housing is at the top of a lot of districts Minds rightfully so and so it's one thing to say we want to build employee housing but it's another thing of how do we get there what's our road map and we typically say that a a successful feasibility study should really help you as a school district answer three questions the first question is is it physically possible to be able to develop in within my District boundaries that could be either on a school district property that you already own so if you have any sites that would allow for the development of employee housing that could also be perhaps there's not a site that you own but perhaps there's a site that's located it within the district boundaries that's already developed and that you would might want to acquire we're working with another school district right now where they have to determine hey we don't have any property that we already own but we're open to acquiring some sites and so it's really determining is there a site within our district boundaries where we can see um development potential the second question is really assessing market demand is there demand in this case the market is your employees and and District staff and so that and the way that we do that is be an employee survey so you might have already have one but really being able to assess what is the demand what type of units so to speak would your employees be interested in and then really being able to get a gauge of what salary levels are obviously you know the salary levels of your employees but um really basing it off of the household income levels and then the last and final question that a successful survey excuse me analysis should really help you answer is the financial analysis portion I will say this is the part where um uh I but the most difficult if you have property is how do we pay for it one how much does is it going to cost to build we also we help you answer that and then the second part is okay well now that we know how much it's going to cost to build how do we fund it right what are what are the different avenues for uh for funding and we are aware obviously that the school district has passed a bond but there's um you know districts are using a variety of different opportunities to be able to fund the construction of development and then obviously once you answer those three questions and you do decide as a board that you would like to move forward with development of employee housing it's obviously doing the the deeper formal due diligence and then moving into construction and development and so our team is able to manage the entire process from beginning to end for you all Atlantis do you want to do final words I think I just want to re-emphasize where we provide the most value to districts as we operate as an extension of the District staff so we are here to protect the district's best interests as your owner representative so that as you are going forward and due diligence is being conducted Financial feasibility is being conducted you don't have to worry about is there some bigger play for us because we want the construction budget which is really where we want to make our money so maybe we will not short change but the data that's done in feasibility there could be some conflict so for us it's always the board is always able to know that whatever data is put before you is the the bare facts and there are no other um incentives for us to find findings that may benefit us a little bit more okay thank you so much so with that I'll start the first question uh given the complexities and local zoning and permitting could you please tell the board about how your firm has helped client districts navigate the zoning and permitting process to ensure a timely start to the commencement of the Project's Construction it's a great question so um I spent eight years as a planning commissioner so I'm very intimate with the entitlement process zoning and everything else but really it's part of the feasibility and so one thing that we do early and up front and before you get into permitting is making sure that if there is a site that is actually feasible for development that the land uses can be supported if the if the current land use doesn't match what you want to do in the future then our job becomes is there a path forward so that's Community stakeholders that's policy makers and it's really getting an understanding of is there a pathway for supportive land use or not and then bringing that answer back to you because sometimes land use just isn't compatible even if the district wants to build so knowing those things up front saves a lot of time and energy Carl did you want to add anything to zoning or land use I've done a lot of that throughout my career that really is the focus of what I'm doing here um and understanding that feasibility from that standpoint I think you know community outreach is a huge aspect of that I've actually developed a number of school sites kind of from the other side of the table and so I know how important that is in working with the community and ultimately getting you know the um support that we need for for these type of projects foreign there are always pros and cons when dealing with issues what has been the most consistent issue in dealing with districts while working on a project the pros and cons and how the issues were handled resolved and executed that's a very good question you know honestly and it's different for each district because different districts have different levels of trust with the community different type of neighborhoods so for us I would say was consistent is the district fighting the tension between spending resources unless just say Workforce housing and others that are internal stakeholders for instance or even Community stakeholders that want to see the district's resources be spent for different priorities so what we find across the board is making sure that there is a very supportive narrative from the day you start discussing like a Workforce housing project until you get to execution and so we find and we often will craft that message because it becomes a function of why are you doing it in the first place and then what is the appropriate messaging that needs to carry across every aspect of this project and we start there when we find District's not able to communicate frequently and in a manner that translates to what your ultimate outcomes are then we see a lot of tension because people are competing for different priorities and so for us it's always centering on what is that why getting out early and often setting up very very good stakeholder engagement there are a lot of different tools that we use and then anchoring the entire process to the outcomes that you want Montero uh have you been the subject of an investigation related to any of your projects to reverse no we um by volume we're the number one agency in the state that provides these services for Public School District we are a reputation business and so with entities like csba as our exclusive partner um we just really just always are there to support the district so it's not about what's in the business of our firm it's really about helping the districts meet their outcomes and then further we really make sure that we understand from from a District's perspective what are the different pressures of different stakeholders and so we are just all about making sure that we're accomplishing the district's goal so we've never been involved in anything that would be considered controversial um any type of litigation or anything like that we're just here to take care of you as a public benefit company we take that very seriously so it's not a for us we're not jumping into school districts Workforce housing space because it's a it's a a function where we can make money this is a service for us okay vice president Herrera loera thank you I have the last two questions what is the average timeline to complete a feasibility study yeah well I would say it really depends on how many sites are included so I can give you an example so uh as I said the most recent school district that we just finished is Burlingame School District um the school district identified in their request for proposal they had three sites that they wanted our team to study and so the way that we suggest is um you know I from your RFP it looked like it said all of the sites are potential options and opportunities and so we always say breaking breaking the feasibility analysis into two phases and essentially we say breaking it into two different phases um initially up front because we only want you to spend resources and time on feasible options and so we always say first we have to figure out if there's a there there and what that basically means is you know we don't want a complete deep dive feasibility analysis on sites that you know we can do a high level review and say that's not you know it's not feasible based off of the zoning based off of um you know just contextual influences or environmental issues potentially things like that and so the first phase we typically say um it's approximately 90 days um and that is again it really varies on the number of sites obviously one site is going to have a completely different timeline than if we're looking at five sites so to speak um and then the second phase is really where we do a deeper dive after we determine okay of the amount that if if you give us five sites of the five sites so to speak just pulling that out of thin air you know two of them are potentially feasible so we want to do a deeper analysis into those two it really depends on the specific site so for one school district there was some environmental issues where we had there was potential Wetlands on the property and so we had to dive deeper into that to make sure that is the entire property land developable so that has a different time period than you know something that doesn't have environmental issues but overall I would say budget approximately two to three months and it could go up or down from there thank you and the next question based on your organization's experience what are the key roles and responsibilities for the district and for the consultant in achieving a transparent process that gains buy-in I'll start we all may have something to chime in but I think it really starts with the board having alignment on what you're trying to accomplish I think that sets up a very transparent and in a process that should work kind of smoothly if the board is aligned and communicates that we also believe inviting stakeholders into the into the conversation once you start getting some initial data having a few study sessions because the public really wants to learn and we're conducting study sessions all the time and we really we were on with the district yesterday just preparing for study sessions next week and so I think for us it's a lot of communication to the public a lot of Education to the public them seeing the board is unifying behind a particular why and then preparing the board for things that we believe may come up as let's call it tension areas of tension and understanding how to navigate those areas of tension which is part of the general narrative so for us it's just it is a partnership with us so we're here to serve and so having very clear guidelines up front having very clear desired outcomes up front really helps us craft a particular plan did you want anything okay but I'll just say you know we've Endeavor to be an extension of staff and so that's kind of how we like to operate so we're not here to just to to just rush through an assignment we're here to really get you to your outcomes and so that really starts and ends with the board and the board's alignment and making sure that we're talking frequently and then transparent I'm just being redundant but I just want to emphasize it because that's where we see things break down okay well thank you so much for uh taking the time to interview go back to the waiting rooms we're going to tell your schools and invite you back to show you this course yeah can we have a discussion the benefit of each other I'd like to do this I mean this is an open yes um yes yes but I I'm very very glad that we got some good firms that seem to have a significant amount of experience um I see the HP um Johnson German company with local experience and so I'm I like that however I'm looking at the in terms of the the compensation and it looks pretty wild like the top of this you know 195 at the highest um we have one the first one at 116 but you know a bunch of stuff is to be determined and then dcg that comes in at the two phases they have a higher professional fees and so it kind of difficult to make a clear assessment so um were you able to look at that at the at the at the freeze the the pre-structure that they set up and do like a uh try to do a comparison yes um I did review The Proposal um and again um I mean it's really difficult to cost out the total feasibility part of it um yeah and especially since we didn't give them the like eight years two sides or here's three sites right right that makes it a little bit more difficult and probably that's going to be you know done through the contract negotiation once it's going to be selected um gotcha all right um and so we would potentially if you would have because uh this is my concern that uh some folks here are looking like it's a better deal but stuff might not be much might not be included um and so that's that's right that's my concern is there like a cap or something because like let's say that uh this one's at 116 but at the end winds up like being half a million bucks and that's not something that should be we should be coming back with correct it's not going to be that wild of a swinging yeah I mean again that can be still like the contract negotiator negotiation in terms of putting uh a not to exceed limit um and again that all depends kind of you know on the number of sites that were um considering gotcha all right well yeah for me I'm come the ehp it has a local advantage that they've done that working so I'm comfortable with that however I find that they've also done some local work um they happen to have a fellow from uh they used to be a vice president Northern California lion homes so they do have the Builder perspective and the expertise there that's a massive firm that was bought up by Taylor Morrison and so I think they got a good team the fact that they're connected to csb also gives them that credibility as well so that's my perspective um I'm torn between those and chamber okay trustee Chavez um I looked at BHP and um and all of them and the one who seems to be the strongest one is ehp and they've done this before so um I I'm gonna go with ehp vice president I'm in agreement I think um the fact that they've done so many uh different projects and um you know they they talk about them they outline them they're up they're running um shows their their experience um so I'm in agreement I think yeah yes and they did ask you know what do you want do you want to just like kind of break even or do you want to make this um a money maker as well so I like that they have those two perspectives in mind because we you know you can always offer it to the teachers um at a break even right now but later on you do want to make some profit because that's gonna go back into your general fund thank you oh I'd say you know to to tarot's point you know I like the fact that you know at least ehp may never to flesh out you know as specific as a timeline as possible as to this feasibility setting so I hope that that you know that in a sense gives us a sort of a uh a sense of where where the cost of this feasibility study is and I think at the end of the day uh given ehp's extensive experience you know they it could it could you know uh it looks to be a very good for them so with that is there any further comment by members of the board yes Montero yeah well I just I I find the concern that there's such a wild swing between the low and the high and so I just want to reiterate that um I am that is a concern and I I'd hope that we get that under control during the negotiations to really tighten that up and make sure that we don't wind up in the highest amounts um because what we're being quoted by dcg is seems a heck of a lot more reasonable um and if in fact these are the actual rates and we'd have a big difference between the two firms I also do respect and appreciate the fact that dcg has told districts no and um it really demonstrates that they're not out here just to tell the district what they want but that they seem to be challenged districts what they need to hear which is sometimes it doesn't pencil out for you and they've actually told West contra cost accounting that it just wasn't going to work after it's like I do appreciate that but yeah if we can get that stuff that Delta they're under control I'd be more comfortable um at this point like I said um the the fact that they've done that Santa Clara one makes me like yeah I want to lean forward and however the the big difference in the price is just concerned okay seeing no further comments by members of the board I guess at this time that uh if members of the board have not submitted their votes uh please do so [Music] foreign thank you yeah why don't you write it down and then they can sing with it for you and you have an environment does that work s you want the numbers thank you awesome a person foreign for the memory if you're okay with that you use the core person you know YouTube because they use the time I found because there are still practical problems yes that's what they were okay oh so you can tell the audience and for the sake of time wow okay that's fine for the sake of time while we are uh awaiting uh uh a resolution of technical problems uh with the tallying of the votes uh uh I will move through item 3.01 approving the consent calendar so approving the memorandums of understanding uh is that okay with the board yes the Board needs to approve the environment okay okay so I'll for the sake of it so I moved to to consider item 3.01 at this time while we're awaiting the resolution yeah go ahead so I'm amazing second one second by vice president Gerardo era I think he has to make the motion Chief circuits can the president he just made the motion it doesn't matter oh so we have them now there's a motion there's a second so um move to a vote I'll call you as I see you trustee Chavez hi uh vice president Herrera aye Quintero aye and myself building I the amendment is approved so with that will uh one second Maribel are you listening to what is happening in the meeting yesterday awesome very good okay so we'll go ahead and move to item 3.01 approved memorandums of understanding uh superintendent malware yeah this is a very uh uh an agreement so that we can accept the offer of an invitation to have a mariachi group coming and playing for our students next week motion to accept second okay motion motion by Percy Chavez second my vice president Herrera Ferrero era I'll open to public comment seeing no public comment I'll move to a vote Christy Chavez hi I'm vice president Herrera Louisa hi uh Quintero all right and myself voting I the the item passes four to zero what trusty Flores Shelton absent foreign will consider the transportation plan I believe Colbert had a minor presentation for you but if you go to your uh materials the plan is there for you so with that are they ready yeah they're ready um okay okay good okay so now we at this time we'll return to IM 2.01 as regularly scheduled thank you and uh welcome back again and thank you for your patience um if you can draw your attention to the screen we're going to help you build the scores um Brad can you put the score on the screen please as you can see H is h-e-hpmec the score 70h 78 dcg 74 and HED 45.

they've both been in Dr Dean's schools was Madeline okay but she knows you and they both know I mean they both come to know Mr Dean through Dr Dean sorry um sing and read which was one of the many wonderful things that Mr gosh Dr Dean has brought to the school district and I always call him Mr night I said we'll stipulate on Dr Mr Dean because he's always been the Principal to me and I can I can't even think I've ever really called you Jim it's just always Mr Dean um we can't we still sing alligator 23 and 20 we sing alligator and that was you and your um all that you've given the relationships you've built the academic and accountability pieces in such a short time that you made such a priority for the students of this District the staff you came in at a time that was probably the hardest um one of the most challenging hardest challenges that this district has had to endure in you because of you and how you navigated that we came out better than we could have ever anticipated and I think this is probably one of the best places this district has ever been in um thanks for having the bike especially during that moment and up until now and I just wish you all the best I hate to see you leave I appreciated working with you I know this isn't the end I know we'll see you in your other opportunity and have opportunity to have our paths cross and I know you'll still keep a close hand and dice art because I I do believe that this was at one time something that you just where you always thought you'd end up probably and um just want to thank you for all that you've done all you've contributed and I despite the fact that when you first told me you were leaving it was shock and I remember nodding and thinking okay okay and then you woke up the next morning to I've gone through all the five stages of grief and loss and I haven't been made it to acceptance and I need to talk to you again and we and you being patient with me as I went through a range of emotion with your leaving and it's just because you're so good if you weren't and you didn't bring value it wouldn't hurt as bad but again thank you so much for your dedication and your hard work and you definitely made an impact on this district and for that we'll be most grateful oh mine's not as emotional but that was emotional it got us all going but um I'm just sorry to see you leave like everybody else um I don't know you as well as or everybody else either but um just thank you for your service um thank you for your patience with me and good luck in your new adventure it's going to be a fun one um shall we start taking a collection for a gold-plated hairbrush yeah there you go I will move to accept the submitted resignation of the superintendent effective June 30th 2023.

the state gave us the property oh okay so yeah I think we're good there oh hello expansion I think when that was the we updated the trailer this year oh maybe that was it actually I think there is some money earmarked for the experience too because that trail that trailer uh it's actually that goes they own it um they took the old one out and put a new one and that's part of their contract right but I do believe that that was a cost to them of a hundred and that might have been in the contract oh so maybe that's okay yeah just got yeah well I mean yeah if you have any suggestions for improvements we certainly like to hear them for our next meeting yeah you know just since we're talking about walking areas the one so our policies are very old they haven't changed in years and one of the problems that our policies create is that this difference between kindergarten students and first grade and up and the policy was created when we had Darcy only as a kindergarten location so that walking distance was a half a mile now we now literally have issues where we have a kindergarten student going split house right same house who was eligible but their first grade sibling is not so they have to file an available civilization or whatever that that in that case comes to mind so yeah it does create some challenges at Vin and Luther have been trying to take a look at this and and uh understand the physical implications if we make adjustments so I'm thinking it'll probably be on the next agenda but right my understanding is that uh Ben always talks about that you have this special software that sounds making something magical magical software so we don't the software we presently use is 25 years old and is not as special as it may sound we have purchased new software that will give us a lot more um capabilities in the future with adding um GPS directional GPS on the bus for the drivers we have a lot of spare drivers that come into town they have no idea where they're going and this will allow parents to track the bus so they will know if it's delayed look the software needs to be implemented and worked it's not going as quickly as I would like it but it needs to be I'm hoping to have it fully operational by next September and get a year on it before the contract's up and then when the contract comes up we can add maybe somebody's bells and whistles that should help parents in the future because I think that um maybe you know if you disagree um an analysis of like what it looks like if you reduce the 0.75 it may be uh and then also an analysis since we're only a few years out when those schools shift over to Marion and and then you have a larger Norton like what what do those bus routes look like as far as uh especially in the Marion Area where it's going to be very good you know because you have the condo complexes and no sidewalks um what does that look like uh when that school opens three years yesterday when I said when that new school out on Marion and Jarvis is built make sure there's sidewalks in one mile in all directions that's that's the challenge if if walking considerations aren't taken into account when that school was built you'll be busting kids from courier Woods which is 300 yards away yeah you don't want kids walking on Jarvis the road sidewalks no issues they recently put those sidewalks in at the top of one of your going down to the bike path those should be connected right to that school so that that whole street going up to that neighborhood otherwise you'll have you'll need 10 buses just to accommodate that area never mind the rest of the district that is assigned to it it'll be amazing those that that whole area has why would you need additional buses not to get into the weeds but why would you need additional buses if they're all headed out towards uh wherever they go Highland now why would you need additional buses because of it because of the um uh developments that are going on up there if you go down bearing you've got developments going on yeah those sides those kids would all continue to be those kids will have to be bossed while we're still dealing with the rest of the district that's now going to you know we're we're just gonna go do a little so those are those are new kids but I think an Apples to Apples is Chapman shuts down all those Walkers become Busters right right so that's the Apples to Apples kids or buses right they should become widers because there aren't the sidewalks yeah yeah the Marion Road I agree 100 I want the sidewalks there and yeah the development is there I've heard there's some houses out there yeah some nice Redevelopment but but I mean if I was a parent I would not want to I would never let my kid walk on Marion right now that's probably where that the new development down on um right on Route 10 and 691 it's probably where those kids are going to go right new school it's what 75 kids so the um the new uh evaluation of redistricting we consulted with a you know the same firm that did the last demographic study and the uh the proposed redistricting and they said that that should be available in 2025.

thank you so much thank you okay uh so at the same question questions and comments by members of the board I just want to thank everybody I think it was a excellent group uh that uh were came and presented and the decision was obviously incredibly difficult because of excellent qualifications and so thank you for your attention uh trusty Chavez thank you for your time and vice president Herrero era thank you for your time and all that you're doing for our schools out in the state and wherever you're working and continuing to work thank you especially the woman thank you for being in this I mean serious you know I know it hasn't always been um you know a woman run or LED so it's also great to see the woman um involved so thank you yeah so I'll wrap up you know these are what is it volatile uh and interesting times in public education so I do want to thank all all your firms for taking your valuable time to interview with us and also to uh you know uh encourage you you know uh to stay in the business and hope you know and that uh you know who who knows you know uh Never Say Never so again thank you so much for for your presentations approve ehp and second by uh trustee Chavez uh I'll call you as I see you trustee Chavez hi uh vice president Herrera loera aye Quintero and myself building I the motion is approved for the Vera what trustee Flores Shelton absent thank you so much uh moving on to item 2.02 approved Transportation plans for fiscal year 20 2022 2023 this is I'll move approved okay second okay motion by uh Montero second by vice president Herrero era so uh uh call Vera the floor is yours I'm so prepared tonight he's gonna be very pretty [Music] thank you so um the goal of this presentation is just to provide a a little bit of information since it's a new requirement that's that the state is placing our school districts um starting with the school year um so with that um starting again starting with the school year um the governing board is required to adopt a transportation plan um that are receiving funding under the lcf uh performing funding formula um before on or before April 1st of each year um just a little bit of background about what the district is doing right now um we currently provide transportation services to uh 250 special ed students and two McKinney Bento which is our homeless population in terms of the funding last year um the districts actually spent approximately 2.8 million dollars for home to school in transportation costs um in terms of the funding that we receive since 2013 the state has provided us with about 1.4 million dollars and that 1.4 since 2013 hasn't changed this is the first year that the state is actually providing um some adjustments to that funding and what is that adjustment um and so starting this year the state will reimburse 60 60 of our total transportation cost and so what that does is that that adjusts the funding from 1.4 um to 1.7 so just going back to how much we're spending and how much we're actually receiving even with the additional funding um you can see that there's a huge deficit already um of a little over 1.1 million dollars in terms of what we spend in transportation costs and what actually this the state is giving us so in terms of the summary of the transportation plan um the plan itself needs to address three populations um the first one um is how we prioritize um transportation services for our tk86 grade students uh inclusives of the um up low income um the second one is how we make it accessible to people with disabilities and homeless children youth we're already doing that and then the third group is how we provide accessibility to unduplicated people um I just want to make a note that while um there's a requirement to adopt a plan there's no requirement there's no mandate to expand the services that we have right now it's really just to have a plan together in case there's additional fundings that the district would be able to consider um coming with this requirement is also some potential penalty um if a district doesn't have a adoptive plan by April 1st uh there will be an audit finding um and if there's an audit finding then the district will lose this the additional funding related to the 60 um so the base we will still get but the additional funds uh will have to go back to the to the state itself and that's about it I'll take any questions that you might have oh um before that before I have uh questions from the board uh open it up the public comment uh seeing no public comment I will move to questions and comments by members at the board so uh trustee Chavez you had a question uh yes how much do we get for each special ed student approximately so um her Ada special ed kids and regular ed kids receive similar funding they go through the lcff model it's about it changes from here to Europe right now it's about thirteen thousand dollars per Ada um assuming that one student goes to class every single day of the year thank you so that times 250.

motion made by Crystal Chaffin seconded by Joe Grant I guess I could have said June 30th 2030 in the motion motion carries thank you next we will move to H2 Dr Dean Madam president members of the governing board I'm sorry could we have a quick recess sir you can do whatever you want all right are you sure I'm very sure yes okay all right just checking we'll we'll take a a five ten minute recess we'll be back in five okay thank you convene the meeting oh thank you so much teacher voice yeah I didn't yell I spoke loudly thank you very much we will move on to item H2 Dr Dean thank you madam president members of the governing board cabinet in our community this evening we bring back to the board a recommendation for uh approval of a multi-year contract for our assessment and instructional Improvement system and we're asking for this to be approved for the 23-24 school year the reason we're bringing this back is that last year this was approved by the board with a condition that it would be evaluated over the course of the year and brought back for Renewal rather than just granted in a multi-year piece and I'm happy to report that the system is showing success from our perspective as part of our our evaluation process this was one of the components that was evaluated and it is uh shown to be beneficial in our aspects as it relates to instructional planning and instructional adjustments as a result of assessment so we would recommend approval for the 23-24 school year Dr assai can answer any further questions so it we would be adopting it approving it exactly how it was this year with the noted exceptions Madam president that is absolutely correct all of the exceptions that were placed last year um will be in place again for next year and any difficult questions that you have I ask that you wait until July 1st we'll say that again later I just had a quick question um in regard to the with the exclusion of scl components can you explain that a little bit more um within the components of the system there was there was a component called Fast bridge and fast Bridge would have screened for some things one of them being an SEL screener so that wasn't something we were interested in when the board researched it and looked into it they didn't feel it was consummate with what we were looking for either so we ended up proposing it in the academic sense that we need it for benchmarks for finals for end of unit testing without the SEL component or CRT okay so the SEL like you said is for the screener but since we've had board discussion on how what scl means in dicer versus what it's not and acknowledging that sometimes it's helping a child not flip their desk in front of their friends in their classroom that's not what we're talking about we're just talking about the screener yes okay Madam president member Pritchard we did not we still do not believe the screener to be an appropriate use of our resource right I'm good with that any other questions okay I will make the motion to approve multi-year contract renewal for contract number 22-1818-009 assessment and instructional Improvement system for the 23 24 fiscal year as presented motion made by Crystal Chapman seconded by Don Densmore motion carries next we will move on to H3 Dr Dean thank you madam president members of governing board cabinet in our community this evening we bring forward an item uh for a request to approve adoption of curriculum for fourth through sixth grade English language arts and that adoption would be awarded to Savas our processes have all been followed including the use of committees a 60-day review period for Community we have taken a community input and made appropriate adjustments as needed additionally we've held two study sessions on this topic and presented information therein also as a part of this recommendation we would all we would be approving the use of Spalding as a pilot at a district title school and we would start that next year in kindergarten in one of our title schools we're still having conversations as to exactly which one that is but believe it will be best in kindergarten and again Dr assai will be more than happy to answer any questions thank you Dr Dean and thank you Dr Sai thank you to your team for the study sessions that we have discussed at length different aspects of the curriculum different pieces that you take in different pieces that you've left out um I appreciate all of the time that you've spent trying to weed out some of the things that are not in line with our values at Dysart I do appreciate that um I know there was discussion at our last study session on online use versus textbook use have we made any decisions on that we have we believe that we can afford to do fourth grade the new thing is consumables so it's kind of like a workbook with all the readings in it that they take home we believe we can do consumable so they have it to read they have it to work in at fourth grade and at fifth grade with the digital copy being in sixth grade and then can you please remind me I know we talked about open court which is another curriculum set used at another school can you can you remind me as to why we decided that wouldn't work for our other schools uh there were a few reasons um one is the the price tag open court but besides that um open court doesn't um what I'm looking at the committee's notes Here open court was not the product that the committee recommended it lacks continuity Publishers each build on each other and the skills open court did not seem to do that it is used at freedom but Freedom does supplement a lot with other resources and you know and talking to administration at Freedom if when they go out to bed they would like to adopt something other than open court and Madam president I I would add or I would just piggyback on Dr sai's point in terms of continuity the recommendation for Savas would give us continuity of curriculum in English language arts from fourth grade through 12th grade um is there been discussion on how long that pilot program would be for it would be uh we would follow the kids member Grant I think it's important to follow them we're facing it in kindergarten after talking to Freedom's principal of where Spalding is used she talked about you know starting with Kinder moving it up Kinder one we could rely on Dibble statut first but really we're saying that Spalding increases reading scores and state labels that happens in third grade with the test so I believe we would phase it in with grades and then we would look at different indicators to see you know did in fact work I know that in our study session we also had some conversations about writing some of our own curriculum can you speak to that process how what that would look like just for the public I can and it's something that we could I I feel we would be successful with a given time uh we could write a curriculum but when you get published curriculums they come with a lot of differentiated materials as you saw in Amy's title Presentation we have a lot of el Learners in our district we have some of our ESS students are identified in reading and so when you get published materials they're able to provide differentiation for gifted Learners so the teachers don't have to go out and find it they can provide ESS and El accommodation so the teachers don't have to do that I don't think in the time span we have between now and the beginning of the year and maybe not even within the year I think we could write the first semester really good tier one within a year and then we would have to continue to write because it's three grade levels but it non-published publisher version it would take my team a while as good as they are and we're pretty good but it would take them a while to do that and really stretch our capacity to monitor other areas and oversee other areas would that would something like that be more feasible with a hired position to do something like that or in addition to your team I want to say that in the research that I reviewed uh when the team teams build it together and teachers when you're doing an in-house curriculum it really needs to be a team approach I would be hesitant to have one person write it and that's why it would take a while to alleviate some not not to take it on all just that one person but just and the model I'm talking it would be a team but it would take it would take a while just to write um when we did our own unit test I mean I would pull teachers out for probably a half day to a day three teachers to write a good unit test to talk about what are the readings we want on here are they at the right Lexile level do they how many pieces for Reading literature standards do we have how many for uh informational text are the questions hitting at the right level of difficulty are there enough at the dok2 are there enough dok3 it sounds really simple when you say let's write a test maybe it is for math easier cammy's not here so I can pick on her but with English finding the right the right pieces and then they would also have to to be something we either have licensed to already or open source materials you couldn't go in a in somebody else's text or Anthology and lift their piece without having the rights to do that okay so with with the adoption the potential adoption of Savas tonight because you know the you and your team and the board Maybe we've kind of dissected and pulled so much out of it that didn't necessarily align with our values are we just going to be in the same position that maybe freedom is with open court having to use so many supplementals and it maybe not adding as much value as it could I think that's a great question I actually discussed that with Danielle you know to the extent we're pulling what we are recommending is that the leveled readers are most of the things that people had issues with we're not doing leveled readers we already have materials in our school that kids can pick novels at their own level and I think novel studies are very important we talked about that I think in our first study session that in addition to this we need to get back to more novel studies where kids are doing literature circles you know where they're talking about reading whole novels really dissecting them and going through that so we do have that to supplement we are taking the Savas level readers out we are taking there's a student there's a story paper Sun that we would take out so that's one story in fifth grade and then unit 1 and 6 grade and in talking to Danielle Danielle Todd IB literature at Willow Canyon and she's taught everything 9 through 12.

uh that we should be doing that in 2025 you know it's if you read District now you could run into real issues um and we still have some flexibility with the new people who come online I mentioned the last board meeting that we're taking that group on off of dickerman and just moving that neighborhood to chat room to try and ease the overcrowding island before we get you know too much before next year and before people start moving in there um have any of those houses open yet no not not the ones off the dickerman okay when did they when do they start going on should be they're up there are a lot of them when do kids move in these are condos um like right at the beginning of the street as you pull out on the left they're just kind of putting a lot of finishing touches on that last time I was out two weeks ago it was an active construction area and they're not ready to move it but by the end of the summer no doubt so that we're probably not getting any new kids this school year no I bet before the school year ends they'll be in it I don't know about that I yeah I mean I think it's it's not going to be a big number of parents who are going to move their kids first and we were working with around that so it seems like that's more of an over the summer thing I mean next school year yeah yeah I don't think we'll see a lot at the beginning but I think by the end of this next school year we'll be filled yeah but then in August actually they're starting to move in so so two people so one more question on this the one mile the couple who are here before they said they're right at the one mile Mark I don't know exactly how precise that is but here's my question how is our policy written is it less than one mile or equal to or less than one mile it's just one mile one mile that's all it says they are 0.92 Miles driveway to 100 feet oh okay so they're 0.92 miles 0.92 miles and that's always becomes an issue for anybody that's right on the edge because depending on how you you measure it driving your car I understand what you're saying and this is just one way of looking at this they do not because it's a regular 100 80 60 foot Drive yeah it's not a big driveway okay okay we have um we use the gis map the town GIS map circuit we can actually draw a path and get the actual measurement yeah and the measurement from the edge of their driveway to approximately 100 feet to the closest door and Doolittle was 0.92 okay and so their route would be down sorghum a Long Mountain and then up Cornwall to Doolittle right no they're on wait it's perfect off a mountain uh Birds is off of sort of so it's garlic is awesome right because the pictures they showed was that that that corner they're showing foreign right and that's that yeah that forested area that and that's someone that's all going to be homeowners association because barclayage and sorghum Mill that's the same development homeowners association somebody's doing it contracted it's not usually it's not just somebody you're just gonna look it up hopefully yeah someone's responsible yeah okay yeah I mean if you want to if you want to discuss it further get more information yeah no yeah I would like to get more information I think the you know it if we just took these guys at face value and didn't expect or anything else in moving kindergarten to three quarters of a mile in first through six is three quarters a mile would be okay but looking long term you might want to make it all alone we're gonna yeah we're going to want to take a look at it that's what I think you and Ben should take a look at particularly as it relates to Marion and Jarvis you know because we're making a decision you know to implement let's say 23 24 um and 26 27 is dramatically different the one good thing is it looks like homework the farm was bought by bizuto so I don't see them developing in its neighborhoods God forbid if that was developed as a neighborhood that's all right I'm sorry I'm just looking at the map the gis map and it says open space there is a home on barclayage so at the corner of barclaysian Mountain that has a property but the stretch between barclayage and sorghum Mill probably two-thirds of it is open space right would be done by contractor which would be yeah homeowners association yeah yeah now there's two different so there's two different groups that two different people or entity that would be in control of that sidewalk there yeah two different homeowners associations no it looks like it's a homeowner as one property and then the homeowner's association is two-thirds of that stretchy sidewalk um actually no it's um it's even more than that it's that whole when you go up sort of Mill so you're driving down Mountain Road you turn up Silver Mill that big stretch of woods on both sides both sides are open space before you get up to the houses so the property start where you start to see the houses yeah so it could be two separate yes associations hmm when the school planning is doing the sidewalks they're going to need the hair for me [Laughter] thank you guys all right thank you because sidewalks you know they're always so well received here right yes yes yeah all right so this is really more or less something I just wanted to bring your to your attention because uh in years past that hasn't been much of an issue um but this year you'll likely hear people Express frustration um around this policy basically we established attendance areas which is zones for the elementary schools right and um people can ask the board you know mean they send me a letter and they say well I live in Norton you're familiar with the process oh yeah yeah yeah yeah right yeah but I I live in another neighborhood sometimes people move or sometimes whatever I I still I want my child to attend school in a different area than the one I live and historically I I don't even remember ever declining one it's the superintendent's prerogative based on Space to accommodate that we require those families to provide their own transportation however um because we just don't have the resources to there's depending on the school there could be like 25 kids that go to Highland or live in Highland but go to another Elementary School and the numbers oddly enough they balance out almost perfectly even um however we're in a position now where we have 852 students at Highland we're bursting at the seams doodle so for new requests that come in I'm probably going to have to decline a request to send my child to Highland this summer and what we've done is in the past we're because we've been understanding understandably more flexible we've kind of taken them on like a rolling basis you send it to us we generally send you an approval and you're good um this year I've told people we're going to hold all these things until after April break end of April then we're going to start to review them to look at the enrollment in each building and try and make the best decision you can um so you know sometimes for child care issues I want my kid to go here there or whatever um we may not necessarily be able to accommodate 30 additional students at Highland if you've already been enrolled there I'm not going to pull you out though so if if your child's been going to Highland for the last 40 years on one of these things I'm not going to pull them out to do the last two at another building you know it's just we want to try and maintain that continuity but adding new ones is going to be hard as many points so is this a policy question are you just informing us informing you just a discussion I I wanted you to be aware of it because you know it'll likely come up we're going to do our best to accommodate all the requests so what kind of accommodation is that then so it's not uh a student who lived in the area and then moved across town and still wants to stay at that school what sort of situation is this are these new new people yeah new people to the community or and they just heard that they that Highland has you know whatever they like all the time oh yeah our elementary schools have different two different things right right right so you know yeah this time is better than not nine o'clock or whatever it is a later start yeah you know I want my child to go to the chatting because that helps my work schedule or something right right you know those are the requests for new people that we get um if you moved across town I would still try and honor your child to attend the school they've been attending since kindergarten right um but if you're new it's a new request uh I may not be able to accommodate that and you know I just want you to be aware of that I have zero problem with that I mean it's unfortunate but yeah there's this seems to me it's driven in large part by increasing enrollment which is an issue we've had in front of us for several years now right and we're trying to solve it with school modernization so it's unfortunate but it's just the reality of the situation if this was three years ago or three years from now it might be a different answer right but at this moment in time that's why that's the and it kind of depends where if you're trying to get out of Highland you're pretty much guaranteed all right you're approved if you're trying to get into maybe not sure you know we're gonna have to sit down and evaluate the totality of the situation in front of us at May and April under the May and make decisions and when that happens you know I'll certainly update the board before that but yeah I take it the sixth grade population in Highland is not disproportionately large to the rest of the school because I think Norton and fourth and sixth grade are large yeah no that's I'm still gonna have a big number yeah no thank you sound like we're gonna have all this space when they leave yeah so I just want you to be aware of it thank you yep um the next one is a legal Edition this is very straightforward uh basically it's driven by title one which is federal law we receive federal funds to provide intervention supports not a lot this is actually very little uh back in the day we also only give it to Darcy to be honest with it because it was I mean it's not a lot of money if you're a title one IA you have to meet certain credentials per federal law we already need those credentials so this is just kind of a a moot point but it just isn't the additional training that that's the next one oh okay gotcha so this is just this just mirrors the yes the requirements for title one okay wait a second pair of Educators it says I'm just thinking that only the board May abolish a position that hit has created right we don't really I mean this is my perspective on it as a board we don't create any of these positions for teachers or teachers it's like you've come to us on some stuff I think more if it's a national current position uh-huh the board like so if I wanted to create a brand new position perfect example is Ryan Murphy's um you know Community coordinating position that we have and that was new we didn't ever have that position before God so I came to you the board approved that position a classroom teacher in third grade you know we already have that position that's just the number of third grade teachers we had or whatever so for example if um we saw a bump in enrollment at Norton third grade right over the summer and you know we have the discretion administratively to say oh my God we can't have 28 kids in class yeah yeah we um we add a third grade position that's not a new position it's not a new job okay so the way it's we have a lot of third grade teachers it's just you know modifying the numbers this is like a brand new role um if we were to abolish title one para Educators only the board could take that action if we so we're not yeah anymore yeah that's that's not gonna happen this is different from my role in the council because I mean if we were adding two new police officers it was not a new position right right the council vote on it yeah a new head count change yeah exactly but that's not what we do here no yeah okay because I we have questions when we had to hire we had a student woman who had substantial needs that required a one-to-one para educator we had to create a new we had to hire a new person for that you know that has to happen all the time and we reduce staff to all the time if that was yeah a board meeting every time we did it no no no yeah that would be all we'd be doing there's a lot of flux so the next one is Adam was mentioning uh this is that bigger there we go this is the one that uh references professional development time for para Educators and I hate to do this it's almost like what we did a couple of years ago at Adam when we were going through that um the graduation requirements for high schoolers the state kept changing it every seven minutes right there's already um legislation to change this so we'll adopt it and then in July we'll change it again but um the the uh teacher aids in Para educators it just kind of outlines the work of those individuals it outlines uh the requirements that they need to have so example two years of study uh in higher ed to secure and associates degree is that in a contract yes we have stuff outlined in contract about including like an associate's degree yeah okay I'll grab the contract no I'm just curious like if we wanted to change the policy would we even be able to change that part of the policies what I'm curious about if it's in the contracted the contract would supersede yeah yeah okay okay so again this is for the title one para professionals they have to meet those standards um and this is all you know been recently online so here's an example of things that could change exceptions to these requirements act as translators so I mean it's saying basically you could have a title one para educator who doesn't have an associate's degree for the purpose of translation services too in the state right now is going through you may have heard of the legislation around requiring school districts to provide translation services at all ppts and things as needed you know I would think that districts would really try and do that anyway what we use is an online service because you know finding a mandarin translator is not like on every street corner and so we we do this very cost effective and efficient way to do it this year was the first time we were able to successfully integrate that into our parent conferences in the fall and it's you know it's a real blessing because we have a lot of growth in our population of ell students but um ironically not a lot of growth in our ell Adult Ed yeah so off the top of your head do you know how how many parents Define it how you want parents households parent-teacher conference where the language is a barrier either a hundred percent or you're just using this as a tool like I know there's more than one oh yeah definitely but is it in the dozens or hundreds that have to be that information okay I'll ask Ryan no that's that's fine it's not I'm curiosity it's a quick question um Jeff do we have to change the title of this because if you're an educator yeah I mean um because they that teachers Aid is no longer used right it's not or I don't know if it's accepted term you know whatever but it seems like we're going to para educator yeah that's a good question I want to review that uh we had teacher aids but those are they work in the cafeteria with playground AIDS so that's a different race yeah so teachers Aid in this instance does not reference a teacher's aid in a cafeteria setting this references para Educators in a classroom setting right because it's specifically well it does talk about non-instructional duties in an education education so teachers aides also have to have an associate's degree and two years of education and additional training now our future aides cafeteria um AIDS they don't that's not required okay required so right we'll take a look at that and um so should we hold off or is should we not something okay moving forward and then um amend as needed in the next reading okay um because I mean you can talk about lunchroom duties here yeah seems to be mixing the two though and yeah and I think that's part of that is probably because of the federal language so I want to try and hash that out because the the reference the title one pair of professionals those a bit of a hybrid here so we'll we'll take a look at that and then the next part was what you were talking about out of the 18 hours of um professional development and you know we have permitted we have utilized most districts have there is a Litany of required professional development um or on online learning or however you want to look at it even I have to watch the bloodborne pathogen video every year um DCF is required every three years there's an extensive video of sexual harassment annually um there's there are a number of these PDS that were required to engage in that take many hours and um the state is now saying that that cannot be part of The Proposal that those mandated trainings can't be part of the 18 hours so we're looking to work through that process see what happens the latest mandated training for all people that work in the school is a two-hour in-person only um educational seminar on basically how to identify and intervene with sex trafficking um you know obviously all of us want to do everything we can to um we want to stop that we all care about children two hours for all of our employees every three years for the same session is a pretty substantial commitment I mean start starting to sound like you'll have to push the school year out a little more and add in like almost like a full day professional development yeah right I mean we've already done a lot in the sense that we dedicate several hours in the course of our first three days and we say here's what you can use this for mandated training or we release the videos in in August for the new year and say if you watch them in advance because you have to take tests online and you yeah you know files you away or whatever if you want to do it now those three hours are yours when you come in and then you know people do a lot of collaboration time because they don't want to sit there in a blazing hot school for three hours watching these videos so they try and knock them out at home and then come in and collaborate and do other things you know does that have to go through the contract no but this this wouldn't require a contract renegotiation or anything like that no we would have because I mean if you're adding a date of the school year or well effectively yeah effectively putting another eight hours 186 days 185 so 180 days five days or professional development three of those occur in August one occurs in November one occurs in March so it'd be a significant cost because then it wouldn't be it would be an additional day in the contract now right and so right what's our teacher salary budget line is that 40 million you got to take it's a lot I I was going to guess 40 million so it's actually 200 200 000 a year let's say um God conservatively 30 million right and divide that by 186 one hundredths one just divided by 185 that'll be the number of days you'd be adding yeah right and that would be the cost It's gotta be close to 200.

and she really feels that the prime time to really get kids embedded in those novels a little bit more at a higher level so because we're taking out unit 6 we would not be purchasing those textbooks correct no that's why sixth grade is online is because we don't want we don't say we're taking out a unit but here it's there right yeah I think that um with the writing writing our own curriculum as far as that option I just feel like in all other programs and um and interventions and things that we use in our schools we make sure that they're like evidence-based as being effective and so as great as we are at what we do as far as instruction and things and in your team we wouldn't really we really wouldn't have any data to show that it's where we need to be I guess you know we're not I mean I know that in the I know that we have people help with like curriculum writing and things like that but I mean to just do it all of it ourselves in-house I just think that's a huge Lee I just I think it's going to be very a burden to our teachers on top of everything else that they have to do as well as all of our other staff that still have their their jobs to do and then plus tackle writing curriculum for the entire District I just and then the time frame that you're talking about as well I just feel like that probably wouldn't be the best option at this point I did want to ask you though um in regard to the pilot um is there anything before we consider approving this is there anything in regard to the pilot that is going to be concerning getting it in place or you feel like there's not going to be any issues at this point and we just move forward as is or I feel I feel confident getting the pilot in place um you know it is a two-week training that the teachers who commit to doing it the principal the TLs and the AP I do have to commit to and summer is short however I think I found a school that's willing to do that which is exciting okay um so I think you know that that's an essential piece is that training for the Spalding as we talked a lot about tonight is that Fidelity to the program you know we saw El Mirage up here recognized as an A-Plus School Stephanie Davis is so good with knowing each and every one of her programs and making sure it's implemented with Fidelity we have to have PD we have to train people on our programs it's not fair to say here's a program have fun uh so I think that is even though it it makes it a hurdle to do the training it's also what's going to give us the best results uh and even you know even with a pilot we always want the best results for our students because we want to see them keep growing especially putting in a title school which I know the board is very concerned about making sure that our kids continue to grow so that's an element of hurdle but it's not insurmountable and definitely something that I think we can do okay thank you is that going to be a problem because yeah that summer program some are learning development programs with a summer workshop and the summer school it did make summer a little short and I was having some trouble finding volunteers but like I said I found one so I think that we are good to go on that but okay so you have the workshop and then some of those some teachers some they're teachers that teach summer school and now we're asking them to come in for two more weeks of training is that the hurdle of that's their summer yeah that that is the hurdle and I think that's why everybody I thought everybody would kind of jump when I said hey title principles would anyone be interested in this I was surprised I didn't get eight emails back uh and then I remembered those things member Grant but I did find a school that's willing to do that so I'm very optimistic that even though that's a hurdle it's something that we've been able to mitigate would that affect so that school says okay we're going to do it so maybe some of those teachers may not take on summer school um we're running about 40 or nine teachers at each site for summer school one at each grade level um so it's not like all the kindergarten teachers would teach summer school anyway so it would affect it for one teacher for sawvis did we ever get any statistics on how well their proficiencies are we have a ratings from Edge report that say they're uh you know that they meet the standards that they're an effective program I think it would be really hard to isolate and say it grows You by this much I'm sure they have them somewhere I'm going to be honest when I say I'm very leery of those uh because if I'm a publisher I'm picking where I did a good job um in talking to other districts that have it they're happy with it but it also doesn't mean that it's going to be the same here um you know it's how how do our teachers implement it how do how do we roll it out uh you heard Amy talk tonight about Achieve3000 and it's a really big deal how you roll it out we had it before but we didn't have a good system for our rollout or for our monitoring um so I would be hesitant to take someone else's data um I'm optimistic that it's good it's aligned to the standards better than almost anything we've seen uh you know so it's hitting those standards at a higher level in English one of our main problems is is we like to read part of the standards that says describe the characters but then the standard is really describe how the characters interactions Advance the plot and so we like to stop it describe the characters and that's our old standards too that that used to be a standard and so when you go back to looking at a materials published in you know 2010 2014 it doesn't get at that second part and they also don't have the literature to support that sometimes so I would say that we're probably in a pretty good spot to hit the standards and if we hit the standards it yields achievement and then on the literature part a lot of the stories we're taking out so we need to replace them with others the other stories right most of the ones we're taking out were the trade books the little books and we we don't need those we're happy without them we there's enough to do in there without the trade books um we are taking out uh two stories in fifth grade uh but two stories in fifth grade don't amount to that much with the with the amount of reading overall we are taking out the unit six so the unit six Danielle's team is really going to have to build around uh but like I said Danielle loves the literature circles so we do have we have a plethora of approved novels in our district uh they can give students some choice and voice in Reading we do know with as reading research is emerging when kids match with texts that they like they tend to be more interested I know it's amazing not every kid likes Huck Finn or To Kill a Mockingbird um you know and some things we read all together but when we have choice and we say here are five books you can choose from with you know and they're approved usually at sixth grade I used to have my parents also sign off even though they were approved if it's a novel I think it's it honors our parents and our community to have sign on that too because I know um since we're looking at Spalding I know Spalding has a really good Literature list on their website but something maybe we could substitute definitely would be an option and lots of those are open source the ones they have okay okay thank you just want to clarify the way that this motion is written first of all um you know it's stating that it's District y but this is not applying to Freedom correct no it does not apply to Frida and they were they write on their own Freedom World schedule of curriculum thank you and I I realize it's agenda is this way but is it possible to break this into two motions Madam president member Densmore you certainly could break this into two motions okay just a suggestion in case someone maybe feels differently about one versus the other maybe we could have the the Spalding separated absolutely okay any other questions comments and just just hypothetically if we waited and wanted to maybe request additional publishers if we utilize the same program that they're on right now could we I guess renew it for a year but they're on right now and then continue to look that's an option that we presented in the study session I will tell you we're using Florida virtual right now and some Journeys and it's a mixed match and our our reading scores is not are not as strong as we want them to be in third fourth and fifth our Benchmark data is not coming in so could we do that yeah do I feel it's the best choice to drive our achievement probably not okay doctors say I know that you and I talked offline but can you just um remind me if if we do decide to go with Savas moving forward what is the time commitment to that uh the time commitment I think would be um so we do have a curriculum adoption cycle right that's that's also approved by the board so if the board said in three years in two years three years hey we want to go out for a comprehensive what I heard in the study session is we would like to look at a comprehensive K-12 curriculum uh we could do that we would have to work with Mr Hicks and he would have to raise my budget probably some I see the smile on his face over there because adoption with materials always requires money so it would be it's kind of a combination of you know the funding if you know when the board wants to do that when we're looking at you know our our results you know what are what are we seeing are we seeing areas of concern are we seeing areas where we have stagnant growth things like that Madam president miss Densmore you could always direct the the district cabinet to um to open uh to vendors to present for curriculum materials at any time I I guess big picture here because we're using um the Federal grant money is there an expiration on this Federal grant money Madam president member Densmore the expiration on that grant money is next school year the money has to be spent by the end of next school year or it goes away school year yes however I would point out that it does take time to get materials to arrive we've spoken with the publisher um prior to the recommendation for adoption to assure that they would be able to meet timelines of getting those in place and I I should clarify that the federal funds the answer funds expire next year and any materials would need to be received within that fiscal year is that fair Mr Hicks I got one right only took 18 years sorry I keep hitting this thing can I ask like is there is there a concern I'm just just reflecting on the study session and then some of the questions now like are there concerns that maybe some board members have about the curriculum now or the committee recommendation or just so we can process them together I feel like something's happening like there's thoughts that are just maybe new or no they're the same thoughts that were brought up in the study session um just the principle of it it's it's it's very difficult for for just speaking for myself it's difficult for me to say we're going to you know the approximate cost of the adoption of this is seven hundred thousand dollars that's a lot of money to be only buying a portion of the curriculum that we would normally get because we don't want a lot of it do you know what I mean oh I know but that was that that was talked about at the study session I think that was like a new idea right a new idea that was brought up at the study session the pilot idea oh I'm not talking about the pilot talk about God I'm sorry [Applause] today I'm talk you know I'm not talking about the pilot I'm talking about Savas sorry okay I do think with the consumables originally when we priced out it was the hardback text for fourth grade of when we found out they have consumables I think that brings the cost down significantly um so this is not necessarily accurate we we didn't know about the consumables uh we thought we were going to have to purchase hard tags they let us know that they do have the option for consumables recently uh so it would not be quite the same price tag Miss Noble believes it'll come out at about 3 50 for two years 350 000 for two years does that change how anyone feels when how would we I guess um get the results of of the proficiencies how soon would we know that it the the new curriculum's working I think that we could use and I'm going to look back to Amy but I think we could use it wouldn't be fair necessarily to use unit tests because the unit test would be different so I would be comparing with apples and oranges the benchmarks will remain relatively the same so I think we can look at Benchmark one how did third fourth and fifth graders do on Benchmark one this year compared to next year how do they do on Benchmark two we can break that down with sub-populations within that how did our title you know did it have an effect on title versus non-title and the part about the title of non-title I'll tell you is important because traditionally sometimes our title schools have been lower because of lower expectations um and that's just historically speaking not in Dysart necessarily that's just what the research will tell you um from there we would look at their double or their state testing data which we usually get back in May so I mean we would have results going along the way that we could kind of look at and see uh we could do there's a one-year option for the consumables as well uh you know so maybe it is something that we look at and say you know you know do we want to bring back and look at results in a year that's also an option I kind of like that option and then see because I know we also talked about a k through six two at the study session which would be good too we could always look into that I don't know how long that process takes but that's something to I feel like just my opinion as born board member obviously just to kind of have some more conversation around it or just my view of it is that we've had a couple study sessions on it and then we're talking about it now um we had the community the Community Committee get together they recommended Savas we asked Administration what they thought they recommend Savas sounds like we're getting it for 50 percent from the original cost so 350 000 with the option of maybe just doing one year so maybe that would be a little bit less hey I do want to say I believe that the numbers Dana gave me to be correct but she is not a mathematician right approximately um that we just move forward with what's recommended is my opinion I will make the motion to approve the pilot of Spalding reading at a district title School motion made by Crystal Chaffin seconded by Don Densmore so what are we doing with the curriculum adoption I don't know what we're doing with it but I I do have a question if we were to table this until we got maybe a little bit more concrete information about the cost and what that looks like are we putting the district you know in a bad position as far as ordering it because you said it does take some time to get in it's actually my team I I will tell you it's very concerned because we are planning for summer workshop already uh during summer workshop we look at the standards the materials are really important I know that Danielle already feels really behind and third from six so I do have concerns that if we were to to delay a decision it's going to impact the quality of what the summer workshop experience for third through fifth grade or I'm sorry fourth through sixth grade ELA teachers but also our ability to deliver our best our best resources to give our teachers resources with that said um to kind of go back to what Dr Dean was saying earlier we could always because we do make the decision on the you could call for call the vendors anytime you could you could say Shelly you know we we're not you know this isn't this isn't working our test scores are down or we've had so many parent complaints um you know I I do think I will compliment my team and my principals um my least and we really try to adhere to the values our Dysart values you know and making sure our teachers adhere to that and I do trust my team in making sure that those are adhered to occasionally does something pop up I'll tell you something pops up in history and science and English every year we work to mitigate that we work with parents to give them choice and assignments and Madam president and Dr so I apologize for interrupting but we need to stay on this vote at this time because the votes open so if we could stay on the topic of of Spalding and then and then we can continue the conversation once the vote is tallied just want to make sure that we stay in compliance with open media law I think they're good no they're good I voted uh motion carries see now I feel bad because I made you split that vote but it was a good learning experience um I'm going to make the motion for the for the second piece of this but I I just want to say I it's not that I dishonor the work of the committee or the community or this board or you know or or Administration and I know that you did a lot of work on this especially dissecting it um I don't think it's the perfect choice but I think it's the right choice for now just based on you know my questions your answers and I really appreciate you having this open dialogue with the board um I don't know however if anyone else wants to make any comments before I make the motion what do you mean they split it between it's a different item no I know I'm gonna make that second but we haven't entered that item yet yeah I thought we're on H3 okay we're on H4 are we okay okay anyway anyone wants to say anything no I have to agree with Don I did a lot of you know research with this and it definitely is not going to be my first choice but um if we can if we can um maybe utilize it for a year you know two at the most and see where our proficiencies are um yeah I I don't know I just I was not impressed with what I read and the stuff that I reviewed that just my own personal opinion but not interrupt but that stuff you weren't impressed with so it was removed though right the majority okay yeah does the price tag go up if you only do it a year versus two years versus three uh there's some cost savings at two years but it's not I mean it's not huge it's it's just difficult because I'm not quite sure what is out there I know it's hard to find anything really good yeah and Madam president member Densmore member Drake I would indicate that we understand that concern and I think that that's where you've seen the this um this team and our ed services team be willing to agree in that conversation and to make adjustments as needed um because the perfect piece may not exist I understand that and I truly appreciate that that it you know they've been wonderful all of our questions yeah everything options other options I mean just been very open so thank you and will you and your team be writing the scope and sequence we will and I was going to say we we're more than happy to bring that to the board before publishing it for you know we would definitely be willing to work with that and say here's what we have um so I move the board make I don't this is written kind of weird sorry oh here we go um I motion to approve the district-wide adoption of instructional materials and English textbook is this the same my view by Savas okay copyright by reading this entire thing my goodness copyright 2020 for grades four through five and then textbook and materials for grades four through six by hot and Mifflin Harcourt copyright 2014 from the textbook list additionally I'm not going to put the additional on there because that was in the other and suck it in by Joe Grant but you want to say something was this motion for just a year or was it for the actual term for one year and do you still want a second if I amend it motion made by Don Densmore seconded by Joe Grant I just want to make sure Madden president that procedurally were correct the second of the of the motion accepts the addition correct that's what I was asking okay thank you all right then we're good to vote motion carries next we will move on to H5 Dr Dean thank you madam president members of the governing board cabinet and our community this evening we bring second going twice so emotion made by Crystal Chapman seconded by Don Densmore good okay motion carries next we have a call for executive session pursuant to ARS section 38-431 I want to make sure we oh sorry I skipped no problem anybody want future agenda items I would just still uh request uh cips from our schools Madam president miss Pritchard we are working on that very process thank you if only that would have worked for the resignation Quest um maybe getting like an analysis on the the 95 percent phonics I would I would like to see that got it thank you thanks okay now we have a call for executive session pursuant to ARS section 38-431.03 A3 and A4 to receive legal advice regarding the topics listed below and to provide direction to The Eternity to the attorney for the public body at this time I will move that we establish executive session to be immediate to be held immediately during a recess in the regular meeting motion made by Crystal jacket chaff Finn seconded by Joe Grant motion carries we will have a short recess and then executive session days at this time we will reconvene the regular meeting are we good okay I will make the motion to authorize Miss McLennan 162 thousand dollars so that we could do mandated training behind a video I'm curious and and I I realize this is obviously a very sensitive topic but have you in your time here in Cheshire have you ever encountered anything that you would even remotely describe as sex trafficking in 18 years I have experienced one situation that was really almost unexplicable but not definitively anything like sex trafficking yeah okay the individual who's over 18 years old so okay I mean whether than that I'm not saying that it's not that this is not an issue that 80 years old but it's not that this is not an issue for Connecticut but it doesn't sound like and like that particular training is you know I um I mean that's this is not like it's a topic that's like people are unaware of yeah and we're all mandated reporters and we know to look out for those sort of sort of probably be precursors um but you know two hours in person every three years is a pretty substantial commitment what I'm also trying to get your child to be able to read or you know well adjusted socially and emotionally and everything else I can understand I can understand that the Mandate on the sexual harassment I mean to me in classic case is Andrew Cuomo you know he's his Governor he's like I'm just a touchy-feely guy okay but it depends on who the person is it's receiving it if that's appropriate or not so I understand the sexual harassment being something that people could learn more about and it is relevant this one just doesn't sound like it's relationship between the probability [Music] the cost to us to do this professional development is fairly significant yeah relative to the likelihood of engaging in an issue like that yeah it's like you know unfortunately in the aftermath of Nashville there are people who would want us to have an SRO with an AR-15 in the school there is an incredible financial and emotional cost of having of uniformed individual you know heavily armed capability the the well there is a potential risk involved you know it's not every day it's not of course I say that across Connecticut um it's it's too regular Across America once is too much but the emotional cost is more than I'm worried about than the fiscal cost of adding that sort of support and this this has a real fiscal cost to us running this PD um and the likelihood is to your point pretty slow yeah okay um anyway so for that I mean it really kind of feels like this one needs a rewrite because it seems like it needs to be divided into maybe two sections or to just yeah I mean it's already two sections I'm sorry it's already two sections but to differentiate because like again it says teachers aides but it doesn't really mean teachers AIDS needs needs to do this 13 hours right it's fair educators you know so I mean because because it sounds potential it could be a significant change after the first reading which I guess is yeah I kind of don't like the it's fine we can just review it as a first reading next time around honestly it probably isn't the worst idea because law may be codified by the time we get to the second reading and give us a chance to yeah so why don't we do that okay if you're comfortable we'll just when yeah when it's session end in May or I want to say it's June like 6th or something June 6th but if we don't do it right by the second meeting right yeah yeah so so we could just not make a motion to move this one forward right okay you know right okay the last item is homeschooling um there's a there's was an issue in another town a few months ago with a student who was attending in another School and wanted to play Middle School sports at their home school and the superintendent in my mind understandably so prohibited that the other kids in the school wanted to play and then the middle school stuff is not overseen by the ciac high school stuff is but they've got us thinking about you know homeschool requests for partial participation I think I've had that many times over the years and we've always rejected that whether I was a principal or a um a superintendent for a variety of reasons so if Sparky's homeschooled they have different or no vaccination requirements is one another is that the law says clearly you know you don't have to as a public school system entertain people coming and going another issue we have is around student discipline um you know so or grades uh if you're participating in one um one course let's say having you follow our schedule is a challenge um our position has always been you're homeschooled or you're not not the hybrid piece for some of the reasons I just mentioned so this it would be a revision to our policy to provide more clarity uh around that so we say that it may attend on a part-time basis only where a Tempe does not interfere directly or directly you know that sets up just a debating um that the partial seems contradictory anyway I mean to at least from people I know who homeschool their kids they don't really want any part of right that's the point right The Homeschool your kids but I think there's uh from my perspective I would prefer clarity that we don't do that right this leaves that well it provides a two-way street you're allowed to homeschool your kids right but you can't access the resources is that what this is saying what we would be saying is you're homeschooled or you're not right you're not coming part-time or you know doing the after school activities I couldn't see foresee a real issue with particularly around vaccination status which is God knows a hot button issue these days you don't you aren't required to have any vaccinations if you're homeschooled you are if you're Public School so now we're going to debate vaccinations that's what people will come in and the policy and they just would feel much more comfortable clearly stating you're homeschooled or you're not the part the other partners crossed out is participation in extracurricular activities is government you know by regulations the cic that I don't know that we need that in the policy and they only govern 9 through 12.

they don't have anything to do with middle school so you know if we're saying you're homeschooled and you're not what ciec does is irrelevant I mean all those Ci's at the high schooler ever said well I want to play the cic wouldn't let you So currently or in the past have let's say at the high school level have we had homeschooled kids participate in in high school sports we have not pocic doesn't like it oh they don't like not at the high school level right so but you know we've had requests not a lot you know let's not get crazy here maybe a couple one a year to do things with the the middle in high school typically not not really so much at the Elementary grades I just want clearer policy around it right now it's our discretion and we don't haven't done it for the 18 years I've worked here I think there's a lot of present there if we could just change the policy it makes life more black and white moving forward that's where I'm coming from with regard to the vaccination I'm curious about that um what is the state law on that right now because it was a big to do this is before coven there's nothing to do over 93 at Highland and there was a religious exemption right and so I mean are we supposed to be at 100 because I'm thinking we do have kids unless the law changed we do have kids on the schools we don't have vaccinations anyway um not really anymore okay is very limited because the state um I think they've grandfathered it I want to remember but they no longer permit the religious oh okay moral exemption stuff so the numbers of people that don't have full vaccination status will certainly dwindle over time there was a real flat start of this legislative process that people were alleging that we were going to require that we the state of Connecticut was going to require coveted vaccinations but that's not accurate there was no request from dph to do so okay so that so the first point you're saying makes sense to me I mean you want to take medical I guess I guess I would think that a medical exemption would still apply in that situation it does but you know I'm talking about in relation to this oh yeah you're saying vaccination but if you're at home if you're a homeschooled kid what I'm saying is you're homeschooled yeah you made that decision to homeschool so I'm just gonna I want to parse this a little bit sure um what what services what benefits funding is provided to St Bridget's buses we pay for books nursing um do we do some special ed services do we do any of that for homeschool homeschool wouldn't have any transportation books we do nothing nothing right because I kind of feel like I mean I understand where you're coming from and I I'm feeling like this is a non-issue but I kind of also feel like there's a little bit of a double standard there like what would be the difference between Saint Bridget's and homeschooled that's what the state um requires of us to provide that for parochial for parochial school the state does not require offer and private oh so Chester Academy will be the same thing but they don't they know that they've never made a request okay so the state requires it for those schools but not for homeschooling correct okay got it okay yeah so it's okay any other questions no um then I will move that um policy number 422 teachers AIDS slash paraprofessionals and um policy 6172.3 educational instruction under parental Direction homeschooling be moved to a first reading second any discussion no all in favor unanimous of those present thank you and um while you're out while you're outside of the room um we discussed that there's going to be some additional alterations to 61.59 yeah the uh so we're gonna we're gonna leave that one for now yeah okay thank you um the the other two are second readings that we've already you know taken a look at um if you recall this is the one that we were talking about where Asian um Pacific Islander studies uh was integrated we added that piece about because there was some question about what year that was going to kick in if you remember for my last conversation so that's 25 26 school year uh Native American studies is effective the upcoming school year I want to say the state I can't remember if the state released it or it's impending a model curriculum on that I could get for Black and Latino studies let's just say you have a very lone Roman on the Native American studies a very wide very low yeah yeah okay yeah can you I can't remember where this dance are we allowed to do video learning where you could team up with a couple other school districts and offer a course because that was prohibited I think at one point wasn't it because of covid it got outlawed and the prohibition is that you can't do dual instruction which means you can't have kids in front of you and kids online at the same time except under certain circumstances which the last this current uh legislative session is trying to modify again but um at Cheshire high school we have we go and have historically gone out of our way to accommodate student interest so when I was principal there we designed a protocol based off of policy we had that outlines these various circumstances by which we'll even pay for you to take an online class okay so let's say you know Sparky took calculus in fifth grade or something by the time they get to Cheshire High School they've tapped out all the math we will still provide one math class to you to take online and we've had kids take class at Stanford or whatever like we've um you know done all sorts of stuff we will also you know work with other districts we've worked with community colleges to to provide access to courses so absolutely we will if there is an interest a real dedication to do that we will accommodate that do we solve the ram phones or uh what were those things called the uh we have the entire classroom set where wasn't it the Amplified classroom Amplified classrooms do we still have those of course and do we still use them to share with other schools or how is that because you said that you couldn't teach a class and remote kids at the same time so yeah so but the rampla flag classrooms if you will they are microphone systems that Connect into the speakers like we have in the ceiling and the teacher will wear that and just broadcast in the room that has real benefits as well so he's using on the lecture halls or something or no regular classrooms really yeah yeah isn't that oh yeah good morning class yeah yeah now it's it's not up that high but it's it's high enough that kids throughout the room can all clearly hear um what's happening at the front of the room is that a is that again not to get into the weeds but if uh a student had like uh hearing aids or something could they like use Bluetooth that there's something to tap into the system like you could have phone or I don't know that's what I'm aware of so just being help them here right it would just make it clearer and more audible wherever they are so you know in the day if you will the student with a hearing impairment they'd be pinned to that front row right in a class in this classroom they have the same flexibility as every other challenge yeah yeah well hopefully you still use that you get that dual use back because if I recall when the remote learning was happening those classrooms were the best to have for remote they were incredible because the audio was great the presentation was great and the kids were better to follow the student was at home to hear them yeah like they were right next to you and some classes you know it's through this the you know teachers computer speaker at the front of the room and hard to hear these are crystal clear through the ceiling you could hear it it was tremendous that's really cool it's great technology hopefully yeah you know yeah definitely one of the coolest things we did during code Yeah question so there's Clarity around these now when do you um when do you do class sign up at the high school already in progress yeah already done actually so do you have a sense of how many students are taking those classes do you have a fight class I don't at this time I I could get that you know I know the they're they're finalizing that so here's my only question so we've got these new mandated classes sure we'd probably have until the enrollment happens we probably don't have a good idea of how many students will actually enroll they're mandated to be offered um okay you know if you don't have enough enrollment you don't run it but oh you know for the black oh really yeah oh so if only one if one kid signs up for Native American studies you don't actually have to offer it yeah we're not running it got it okay all right so so um items 10 and 11 African-American black studies and Puerto Rican Latino studies is combined to one full year class currently correct Native American studies is also supposed to be a full year class correct or not I think that was one of our questions and the and the Asian American or uh aapi um Asian American classic I the state is putting together a model curriculum models okay so you don't know yet if those are each gonna separately be see I I wouldn't think those would be two uh populations or two cultures to be combined into one class right like well I don't know why the other one is either technically but well this the state they don't really pay attention um to the the there's a disconnect between interest and reality and essentially you know to to use a visual if your hand represents how many classes you can take in the course of your high school education in every class is a great thing to add to your hand eventually you're going to start dropping grapes there's no there's a there's a limit to what you can do I got a pretty big hand the the classes that they keep adding the requirements so the latest one is um uh pers excuse me personal finance now I'm a huge proponent of that uh we began requiring that when I was high school principal so you offer at the middle school which is great we offer it yeah it's just a powerful when you think about the financial issues our country has and the skills that kids need to be successful it was just um I couldn't understand why we weren't making that a requirement at the high school it's a very popular class kids get a lot out of it um but the state is now going to require it which okay that's fine I think it was our prerogative to do it but how many things are you going to require and I mean that's going to be a requirement like we do these are required to be offered but you know the the number of requirements that they keep adding make it so that all you're going to be able to do is the requirements at some point because there's just not enough hours in the day so that's the great part about high school is you can have someone else you get a little exposure yeah right you take different courses of interesting the consistent you know this is a good idea we need to offer it we need all right it's one thing to offer it's not easy but it's one thing to offer the mandates on the courses is what's tough and then this is another additional mandate that's required I hope it Giants with what we're doing so as far as we know then aapi and Native American will remain separate correct from each other but possibly and unknown if it's full year currently right and again something's hitting me about the Native American studies but I don't think that they did Issue the model curriculum yet right in the model curriculum is what's going to create the syllabus right pretty much you know I can't remember ever signing up for a course where I didn't first see the syllabus it just makes no sense course description would be nice even okay the second is a follow-up to this one that require this is all the required oh yeah the ones and there's the language again Asian American specific calendar studies beginning 2025 um Puerto Rican Latino commencing 2021 Native American 2023 and then the other courses that are required to be offered we already have we already offer you know uh computer programming and American Sign Language so not the belabor the point but the policy is separating African-American and Puerto Rican Latino studies but the ma what was it the model the model curriculum combines the two they do okay so that's from this from the state department of Ed combines to two into one course right even though we separate them here and this is kind of taken right from language okay all right just I just wanted that point of clarification all right okay yeah fair question so that's just that's the only adjustment in here and now it's really all statutory yeah language okay so um any further questions on that um move uh to uh move for a second reading um policy number 6140 curriculum and 6142 basic instruction um is there a second second any discussion no uh all in favor unanimous of those present fantastic um okay well uh we're on to item six other um I have no other at this time Tim does not Sam is not here so we moved to a German on paper oh go ahead make the motion motion to return I will second all in favor all right we are adjourned at 7 58.

hmm we're live we're live pretty exciting yeah can you tilt that down just a little bit no no just sorry the the camera itself to tilt it just a little bit that's good perfect hey everybody how are you doing we're so excited to to be here camera's up there right it's so hard try to read the comments yeah yeah we're so grateful we really love these these lives they're a lot of fun we hope to do them more but then we just ran into some uh struggles with uh uh schedules and stuff Travis was out of town and I had something going on so hopefully we'll be able to do this and do this more so and I am working on uh um I hate to call it merch but I'm working on a store I had a store where we sold these uh but it was just too much work and so uh because I was doing I was fulfilling them myself so if you got in on the early uh early stuff that was me packing it and sending it out but it just wasn't a good use of my time so uh anyway I'm working on a new store so we'll be able to do that so anyway that's cool one thing I always wanna I feel like I I need to clarify what's going on Travis I'm just reading okay you keep going okay clarify just want to clarify uh because I just feel like I I don't want to be telling a story that isn't uh true so I have had uh there's a meme that's been going around about me saying that my dad abandoned me I I choke on those words I was even on a podcast the other day and the guy said well your dad did abandon you then with the story that I was sharing it's like I just don't like the word abandon because uh my dad did choose to leave um but he set me up with Rick and so I went and moved in with Rick thankfully Rick took me in Rick and Karen I moved in with them so he when I think of the word abandon I think my dad left me on the street corner somewhere and he didn't it wasn't like that he did choose the you know the that he wanted to do other things and so just felt like I got to clarify that so I've clarified it a lot of times but I I also yeah just want to make sure make sure you understand the story so and if you need to know the story you can read my book so that would tell a lot more about it um also uh thank you for those that uh entered the contest really appreciate that and uh and for the people that actually emailed too that was very cool dad podcues at gmail.com gmail.com the the comments can get lost right there's a lot of comments but he reads every email so if you really want to get in contact say what's up give a little bit of uh maybe a testimony of what maybe the show's done for him or for you send it over he reads it yeah I do read it both of us read it and then we we uh answer those questions on our podcast so that's what the podcast was originally meant for so that we can actually ask specif or answer specific questions so because it's a little hard to do that on my channel right so all right so we have several drawings and so let's go ahead and start with one I already did the drawing and so we have the names already but Rick added Rick added a tape measure and have I showed you how the end of a tape measure I'm not so the end of a tape measure I had a faint idea yeah how'd you get that in so so in case you watched my last one of my last videos where I worked in the the wiggling of the tape measure yeah the original one with the wiggling of the tape but then in my uh allen wrench I worked that in yeah some people didn't get the joke this way you can study it for yourself you can look at it and see that this one actually Wiggles yeah so who won that Jackie velocillo Valencia I don't know oh yeah so you're correcting me I'm acting up but I'm giving it again so all right so there you go oh CEO yeah so that's that one oh we have a dad joke so I'll I'll start with the first dad joke because this was actually sent in uh by somebody I thought it was pretty funny it's by Maria ammerman and she says I was walking in the jungle and saw a lizard on his hind legs telling jokes I turned to a local tribesman and said that lizard's really funny the tribesman replied that's not a lizard he's a stand-up chameleon oh that's good that's good that's really good that is wearing it no no I the entire time at all okay then pretty fun yeah so uh so we did that let's see so um like we said if you wanna uh email us dadpodqs gmail.com and then uh for our podcast we've been trying this new format to try to make sure we stay so we're not just rambling because there has been times admittedly uh where where are we kind of rambling yeah but I think part of the rambling is the conversation it's the conversation yeah it's a conversation but it needs to be structured conversation so we came up with this acronym called pops for Dad right pops and the P was personally what's going on in your life uh in Travis of life and then in my life and then we talk about and then the O is for one thing because we do what what my hope is is that when you email me email us a question then we kind of focus the podcast around that question and kind of get into other different things so that's my hope we've kind of coming up with our own one things for for the time being but and then the p is a a parent story because like I said I mean I think my mom and dad started out great and I think my older siblings are a testimony to that um and so we try to bring in some memories of our parents stuff that meant something to us and Travis will do it Rick was on it and uh on the podcast a couple weeks ago for actually two podcasts and got into some of that yeah and then uh and then the S is the shout outs we'll probably weave stuff in there but we're thinking that the one thing will kind of take the majority of the time and then we'll do cover those other things so that's what we're hoping to do right so so we'll start with that for this kind of like a podcast uh the p is personal Rick what's going on in your life okay well the highlight of my life uh last week was going to a father-daughter dance with my granddaughter Jacqueline my kid yeah that was awesome and uh of course she loves to dance and what have you but uh just the fact that uh the Bible talks about as a blessing to see your children's children and not only do I see my children's children but I interact with them and have a good time so it's a been a blessing and I guess that's the Highlight for me for what's going on Personally Travis uh well you know my height or uh what am I going to do my rapid fire app April Fool's jokes I thought this would be a good rapid fire dad jokes dad jokes yeah uh that's coming up because I thought I could probably can you read yeah that's the one okay yeah yeah all right by the way yeah by the way Nico Nico said how funny is it that April fools is the anniversary I can't believe that it's ironic and so there's many comments that uh said I was joking yeah yeah and yeah it's not it is a little ironic and when if you saw my video that I put out yesterday uh it was uh yeah I took a screenshot of zero subscribers Dad how do I yeah and I thought that was kind of that was pretty good I didn't know what I was doing you know at the time and so here we are I thought you lost them all Maybe amazing last one the four million and you can see my original logo he must have said something wrong I got canceled but yeah so it says uh um yeah so zero subscribers I thought because I didn't know you know I oh let's just take a screenshot of this yeah it's pretty cool here we are today pretty fun right uh so yeah my dad jokes now sure you can if that's what's going on because there's like six there's like six of them oh that's a highlighted so so here's the thing here's the thing this guy over here texts and says hey Google you ever show I like making mine up you ever show up to a chef and say hey could you order me takeout you know you don't do that you go to the chef because you want the chef to prepare it himself but you want to make sure you get a good meal no you don't know what you're gonna get this is like Survivor you mean you could be pulling off the okay so were you ready there's a theme there's a thing I I don't know if I'm ever really ready okay here's okay so I'm gonna oh and now he's pulling out his phone well no because I put I put him in notes oh boy it's a handy little uh notepad on here okay all right so uh all right so what do you call a driver and you guys type them in too what do you call a driver whose wrists or and and hands hurt but wherever she goes she's making great time but what medical condition is that oh okay okay next time there's six of these yeah yeah I thought rapid fire okay carpool tunnel carpal tunnel okay all right this is what you're gonna get okay so hey what do you call a vehicle that has uh is made up entirely of uh a matrix of collagen and smooth and it's flexible what do you call that vehicle what is it made up of I don't know cartilage okay and car cartilage all right here's one your intellect is astounding there's a thing I don't know if you figured out the theme yet okay what engine part what engine part talks back to you really lectures you tell talks down to you thinks you know over and over and over what engine part does that exhaust oh that's good but no this is exhausting yeah no it's a carburetor yeah yeah nice yeah thank you thank you uh so uh what do you call uh what what is what is the car use to keep his pants up this is all Automotive Bell something Bell felt oh fan belt see oh but I like that too I like that one okay uh what do you uh what do you call a vehicle that carries a lot of people that's got a leaky roof after a rainstorm leaky Buffs [Music] is over here a van pool a van pool [Music] all right almost done almost oh almost done uh what happens what do you call it what a when a truck comes to a red light so much for Rapid Fire I know wait wait wait wait what do you what do you call a truck what do you call a truck when it comes to red light what do you tell what do you show a guy who is telling way too many car jokes Travis no let me show a guy what are you show them the door you guys nice good one all right thank you guys okay we've got drawing number two okay drawing number two it's for uh you got this t-shirt and it's heavy head slaps Shirley green Shirley green there you go all right Shirley yay somebody asked if it was too late for the drawing it is yeah yeah in order to get prepared we just give you some incentive for next time there you go we might do it might not give away as much stuff but since it's my three year anniversary we kind of went [Laughter] the rest of them were way out there okay so so one thing for me uh yeah so that's what's going on with you or not oh yeah that's why that's what's going on my personal life I was told Google them and I said you don't know now I took that personally Michael Jordan me I took that person drone button grown button grown button yeah uh okay reaction so uh personally um and the one thing this is uh about my three year anniversary of this channel amazing it is gone by fast yeah yeah it's a it is amazing and I'm so grateful for for all of you I I truly am um you guys have been so encouraging and I I you know it's it's beyond anything I ever imagined that it would be I'm grateful for the the sponsorships too I've got a lot of good sponsors and they want to continue to sponsor things too so because I know a lot of you have asked you know how you can help support me and so a big part of it is watching my videos yeah there's one thing but then also uh you know when I do get a uh a sponsor you know I am vetting those sponsorships I had one recently and I was like you know I'm sure my manager probably goes boy this guy I got him this and then but it's like I gotta make sure that it fits with uh my channel yeah I do and and I try to recommend things that I would recommend to my own kids and I can't in good conscience recommend something that I wouldn't feel good about recommending my own kids and so that's what what we got here so anyway uh so my channels I just broke 4.5 million subscribers The 4.5 I've got there uh just last night I was waiting for it so I can get a screenshot of and I just missed it because it hopped over it but anyway um so that's cool uh and then Facebook is over 350 000 uh Instagram is over 120 000 Tick Tock is over 240 000 so thank you for uh all your support with that it's uh it's amazing and you know still again trying to get my head around it and there's so many other opportunities that are in the works uh and so I'm running Every Which Way but Loose and so like this week I didn't get a wisdom Wednesday out I like to have try to do that every week but uh just got a lot of things going on I knew we had this live so hopefully you understand um anyway so I want to give a few shout outs to some of my sponsors um Emma sleep I'm going to be doing one on a mattress coming up Gift of Life Gift of Life fit perfect because you know uh if you know the story of Rick Rick had leukemia on about 10 years ago right right around 10 years ago and um and thankfully my brother Don was uh basically a perfect match for for the things that they look for yeah yeah he's an amazingly close man yeah and then they were able to do a stem cell um transplant to Rick and it saved Rick's life and so that's why gift of life was a a perfect match for for my channel but also great organization and if you look them up as far as Charity Navigator great organizations speaking real quick uh did we just learned this this week maybe a week and a half ago a friend of ours uh like me he had AML acute myeloid leukemia he beat it with uh chemo like I did at first and then it came back and I had to have transplant same thing has happened to this guy he only he's younger he's got young kids so his name's Dustin if you can remember him in your prayers uh that would be good so he's going through what I went through wow okay so is he looking for a no he's got apparently because they've already started the chemo so he must have a match or something and then uh so so I gotta get the life Firestone wants to continue to work with me so I've got some cool things planned for that might be traveling to for that uh and then easy fix too grateful for them and then krustees too uh krustees is a local but thinking about them because I think when you were doing I didn't work for them you did work Rick actually uh was a cabinet maker probably Continental Mills right I think is the parent company of Krusty something like that yeah yeah so anyway kind of cool when they reached out and you know I've known Krusty since I was a kid so thanks Shannon yeah sorry yeah so uh so what do we want to do do you want to find out where people are from that's always fun I do want to say this guy just said isn't it interesting your three year anniversary is on April fools yeah you already knew that of course yeah did you started actually starting on it well so my first year until late see what he puts up with I thought we even talked about it at the beginning yeah he's gonna say hey I saw that someone uh he's reading the comments oh wow uh so anyway yeah where are you from so Vegas North Dakota South Carolina there you go I like Vegas Ohio Iowa Columbia Colombia India Hungary Europe hungry Bay Area we got friends here from Miami Philippines South Africa Brazil Philippines nice my wife's Filipino uh Ukraine yeah Nebraska to Compton Morgana representing hey did you guys know it's April Jeremy on my three year anniversary yeah Austin Korean Washington the state that's where we're at Washington D.C my son's out near DC Boulder Boulder so Saudi Arabia wow wow so cool this could be also April Fool's jokes they're all in Washington they're actually nowhere near those let's say Russia wow yep so very cool uh yeah uh welcome that's amazing how the technology that I remember it is when Rick when Rick went into the military and he was stationed down in Georgia and we used to have to call he used to call home collect I think yeah and the phone bill was ridiculous yeah I'm here now you guys can see us yeah clear across the country or across the world and it's free it's amazing yeah so it's nuts it is amazing so a dad joke and then drawing of the next t-shirt uh our buddy what do you call a bear with no teeth a gummy bear [Music] that's good as you come up with that yourself I like that buddy I hope so what I know it's good no more from Travis what then cut off okay so the next one is be good to yourself shirt and it's for Ms underscore cats underscore life cats with a k yep cool so there you go I said if there's an MS underscore capture the C I don't want to get their hopes up yeah yeah because there's probably one of those two there might be yep so very cool uh my bad what my bad what that [Music] um I forgive yeah we do understand though I got another one the bookstore the other day yeah I went into the books for the other day I saw this book said how to solve 50 of your problems I bought two of them [Laughter] that's good I was trying to like like think about it that was good though way to go good delivery so we'll do the next one River spell probably loves it really got another you got this shirt and it's for Alana bobana eight Wow Let's Get the other way we've got dark lettering yeah it's cool land of Obama ready to go congratulations nice way to enter contest and win I like those and then the next one is Squiggy yeah okay you gotta go down buddy okay what do we got oh we got a gift card earthquake earthquake dogs bounce that around the camera oh it moves kind of pivot it that way a little bit yeah yeah the whole thing there we go a little bit more a little bit more yeah and then more and then just right here [Laughter] okay uh so 50 gift card Visa gift card for Maria ammerman lives yeah yeah congratulations okay yeah that's that oh somebody says is it just me or is the audio cutting off oh it could be when the dogs went flying into that thing maybe they still are can you guys hear us can you hear us have you guys heard of Hungary we have Travis kills me with like yeah okay I got it oh another dad joke another dad joke whoa who came why was the song son not allow a loud party with this with his seven friends at the saw hold on let me think about this and ruin your time I think the six-year-old can get this one why did this song because because he had too much teeth he was too late oh too late hey what do you think hey what do you call a saw with no teeth a gummy saw piece of sheet metal uh okay so this is something Rick came up with uh we weren't planning um I thought it'd be kind of fun so we're actually going to sign this saw all three of us you gave me an invisible Rick and I'll sign it yes it'll go down in value traffic um there's a little story The reason I came up with this real quick is my other son uh Adam uh it was a year ago he had gotten a Christmas tree and you know how you cut a couple inches off the bottom of the Christmas tree when you get it home because the sap is healed over the end of it so you want a fresh cut before it goes in the water and I think we went over that and probably in your Christmas day yeah yeah anyway he didn't have a saw so he used a bread knife and as he was using that bread knife you imagine how hard that would have to be to he was pushing so hard he had slipped and he sliced his thumb open really nasty I had to go to the clinic and get stitches and what have you so I bought him a sock so I thought you know a saw is uh and this one here is kind of should fit in your toolbox I I carry one in my toolbox and it's a kind of a uh just a handy song yeah yeah yeah yeah we thought it would be fun hopefully so Phil yeah feel free to scuff it up I like the name bless Ed less three less less l-e-s three I hope you're not less less but yeah anyway yeah maybe it's oh it's maybe your first name is Les and then you're blessed that's what I was thinking okay maybe less any reason there's three that's the third or the three of them I don't oh there's three of them oh there's three guys the whole family okay yeah laughs okay so do we have anything else I mean I got my I got my giveaway uh kind of the grand prize it's gonna be I'll personally sign a book and actually write it to you um and then I got the gift card got another gift card in there and I got a shirt and I was actually gonna give away a pair of my socks too do we want to go ahead and don't want you to peel those off they're dirty my dirty socks [Laughter] whoa you got some dead hot do I sucks I do that might be hazardous waste but I see again and that has the name on it that's really cool all right well we wanna you wanna you wanna do it an hour away till the end well it's gonna should we do another dad joke well you said to have April fools oh yeah you were going to tell a story about April fools yeah so or is it a joke okay I brought some ice cream for everyone to enjoy can I have a bite yeah oh yeah April fools it was a really nice no no they didn't see anything good joke okay all right that looks really real it's really good it feels me yeah these guys hey we'll do like this is ever uh redone in 3D [Laughter] so here's my here's my best one uh there was a friend of ours in high school um um she she pranked us pretty good so we us three guys wanted to get her back we made a copy of her uh car key I know it's very car themed and at lunch we we she didn't know we took out of her backpack at lunch we went to the hardware store made three copies put her original one back in her backpack after lunch and then for the next like two weeks we moved her car all over campus so we walk out there with her and first it was like a couple of spaces over where she wouldn't notice and then we just got random with it we and we'd walk her to her car she never caught on um a practical joke it's a prank right yeah practical joke so you had one oh yeah did you want to share that or I didn't want to go it was funny to me it's funny to us I it goes on a little bit so anyway when I first started working at the airport um we worked on conveyors and it was uh in the bag well where your luggage goes and it takes away so we're working on those and uh and we noticed this one guy at we were working at night this one guy as he would go home he'd walk the same route each time and he would look for uh aluminum cans and stuff in gar you look glance down on the garbage can pull out aluminum cans put them in his bag and walk off so this friend of mine said I got something for that guy tonight so yeah that's some some fishing fishing and so he drilled a hole in the bottom of the garbage can and he tied the fishing line down there when he brought it up and he put drill the holes to the bottom of the tin can tied a nut to it or something and inside that inside that camp and he left it down in there so another guy he took a can and he took put silicone on it and he's stuck into a little bull rail thing anyway I just think that the guy would walk by and I'm going to grab that too so um so anyway so it was like we're working away it's like hey he's coming he's coming so here we are a bunch of grown men hiding inside to conveyor looking and watching this guy waiting for him to come and then silly guy 's dinner you know what you want to pull it and it popped out his hand went back in the garbage so he grabs again does it again he grabs are getting credit banging it breaks down and then it goes all over there to the to the other one that was either silicone he grabs it and he just looked looked around [Laughter] so hard that's good oh man it's crazy it's a good practice I thought it was funny for us anyway oh that's pretty funny they got a lot of time on their hands at the airport at the airport yeah what how much are you getting paid yeah the money we made rigging that thing up that's pretty good the boss doesn't find out yeah so uh I we were talking before we joined and we were talking about April Fools and I've never been a big fan of April fools honestly but I I think it goes back to so I have uh I'm one of eight kids and I'm number seven and so the older kids I think they've they've kind of perfected their April Fool's pranks by the time I came around and figured yeah we got a new victim here so so I I got it all right yeah it wasn't fun yeah no probably never really liked it did you ever do anything no I didn't know did you ever do anything to your uh to your kids no no nothing no I wasn't gonna pass that on that uh twins here trauma of April Fool's jokes stop yeah yeah uh we're gonna we're gonna do the P oh yeah at some point yeah let's do that um because the last thing is the the main drawing okay so keep them waiting until there you go there you go so Rick was going to share we normally try to share yeah the parent story that's the heat so yeah well uh just my dad I don't know how many of you guys dad uh taught us older boys um uh mechanic in and stuff like that we'd have to you know help him and probably a lot of you guys there's always jokes about holding the light for your dad and keeping it out of his eyes because you're kind of brain fading on something else and so there's a lot of that um but we also didn't have a garage and I I inherited that too I still don't have a garage so I wait for good weather I say hey my garage is dry I got to go fix something work on the cars but I remember laying on our driveway you remember our driveway it actually banked back towards the house kind of crowned and went and so I remember being out there working underneath that car and and Dad too having to get it fixed and Rain would be just running right down our backs so anyway shout out to him for trying to take care of stuff and teach us a little something and Mom uh do you remember when she would make fried bread oh yeah it was the best stuff ever it could take regular old Welch's grape jelly and turn Welch's grape jelly into the most delicious stuff ever that would melt into that so if you uh if you have anybody that makes fried bread oh my goodness it's great I wanted to learn now actually so I'm going to try to learn and then show it on my channel if you could make it like Mom oh my gosh but so and I I distinctly remember so we live real close to Phantom Lake Elementary if you've listened to my podcast we live like right down the street from Channel Lake Elementary and but but I want secret ladies the secret Lake the secret to literally revealed five minutes later uh but but we actually went to St Louise and I used to walk to St Louise uh uphill both ways yeah yeah in the snow uh but no we it was it was good it was a good John always ever been a few quarters yeah so we'd have to walk there you know in our my little red uniform and walk there and a lot a lot of times I'll do that by myself but with my older siblings sometimes too but I I remember coming home by myself and walking all the way home and then when Mom would have fried bread it was like absolutely yeah for us if you have some of that and then go on the paper route yeah I wanted to say something real quick real quick real quick back when I was 12.

no uh there was a uh rapid fire we see a lot of your comments uh if they get missed and so you might be just jumping in right now for a few minutes uh dad podcues gmail.com gmail.com he reads them all yep so he if you have a good story I see so many good heartwarming comments about uh you know like what this channel means to you and how great it is and what it's meant to you those are fun and we even read those on the podcast as well give us permission to do that but uh uh we got a volcano representative dogs are barking uh but anyway just want to put that out there if you just are now joining yeah yeah and then I see so Dad how do I tie a tie um it might be hard on my channel to to see all the videos I have because I have people asking me about the different videos and it's on my channel you just might have to search for it and there's more than one page so sometimes navigating that but I I think I have like close to 150 videos now but it might not be as easy to find it but that was actually the first video that um that I put up and I actually when my book came out um somebody made a comment I really wish you would have shown how to tie a tie and kind of gave me a three-star thing I was like that's the first video I did if you just went to my channel you could get that for free rather than going to my book so yeah yeah so I didn't include it because I thought it could make sense so yeah um anyway so that was the the first one that I first video I did uh so what are we seeing here uh scania's bar grew up without a dad life hard without guidance but as always I'll figure it out yeah currently in the Army good on you yeah um thank you for your service I saw somebody else saying I'm I got the Gingy you got the bright but I think it's just this is like light blue it's a this is gray so the ink is gray and then this is white yeah so it isn't it isn't a detergent commercial of Rob's is better well but it's right mine mine faded completely off yeah Travis was gone I've been watching it a ton yeah so uh yeah so that's the story there this was the original one and then Rick has the original logo oh look at that wow this is the that's a relatively oh it is a little different isn't it changed that's the one that's now rice is the real one yeah okay yeah so uh okay we're gonna what are we sorry I just want to put that in out there before we got into the the we're gonna do uh your thing my last uh prize yeah yeah I have a dad joke too let me read let me go ahead and read these rapid fire all right [Music] try to keep up okay so what what does bad they're so cold they're yeah freezer but [Laughter] okay so I think that's it and then we do shout outs for the pops at the at the end so um yeah sorry Morgana that you didn't win but this should show you so she emails every time every podcast comments so it shows you we don't rig things here because if we did she probably would have won something probably right but we don't race right yeah yeah Morgan is awesome she's a regular John laugher is a regular we got Jackie Jackie didn't win actually so well that's true yeah Morgana and John uh Rob shared your emails about when I was on there I really appreciate your kind words thank you but being a part of this yeah and being a part of this is you know let's surprise enough right that's oh yeah absolutely it's your biggest one you can spend time with Travis once uh you can rewind those jokes and listen to them again [Laughter] somebody didn't say earlier on how do you how does right and so use those jokes make good friends oh yeah be a good friend yeah and don't say this yeah and we have talked about uh how do you make uh how do you make friends we did that on the podcast right before so if you tune into the podcast there are things that we're able to I asked the question I asked yeah Travis was it was really actually written by Travis yeah but he sent it into dad podcast my email is definitely not Travis gmail.com all right so I guess uh we're gonna kind of wrap it up wrap it up we've gone a little bit long we normally try to keep about a half hour and it's uh 9 40 but we had all those prizes to give out anybody have anything else they want to share or well who did say shout outs Rick had a shout out shout I got a couple yep uh having uh spent that time with my granddaughter Jaclyn like I said uh grandkids are a blessing uh think about your future if you're you know there's Temptations come Temptations go about in marriages and things think long term okay so shout out to all the dads and moms treasure your kids um uh Lord willing you have grandkids by them someday and it's a treasure so don't cheat yourself out of that okay um and also shout out to Jesus uh this week uh we've got Palm Sunday coming up and we got Easter a week from then of course uh so shout out to him Jesus for uh dying for me for Sinners Like Me and uh and rising from the dead um that's it Travis I mean you can't hard to follow that I was gonna make a joke I'm gonna be like shout out to me for thinking uh short term in a lot of ways and so that you can have the kids as well with just like you know how I don't think long term in a lot of my stuff and so you got kids out of that yeah that's true uh and then you've uh also shout out to me for think I offered it to him instead I said shout out to me for saying hey I could take my daughter yeah and it wasn't because Travis watching basketball who's watching basketball no I I thought of it because and here's a shout out to my mom and my dad four uh they really they kind of retired around the same same time uh and so and that's when Jaclyn was born again she's six gonna be seven in June um so she's going you know so so they kind of retire at the same time so they they really took care of her her first uh I'd say three four three to four years before she got into preschool uh and then into kindergarten because you know I'm working full time and and uh Jamie's working full-time my wife and so I thought that was a special moment because you guys were cool you guys were able to do all that yeah I really wasn't pawning it off on my dad no no no no no and plus I asked her I said I think if you want to go with yes yes because she said she always says this Dad I like I like you I love Mom but I like you and then and so then for one week for three days she at one point I made her laugh and she was Dad I love you I I do love you and then three days later I annoyed her and she said you're back to like and so I got demoted and at that point I wanted to go to the dance store so I said one with me with Papa and she chose Papa oh wow my timing was right it's great it's perfect okay so and then I'll give shout outs uh thank you for everybody thank you for my wife too and helping helping put all this stuff on and putting up with me so there's a lot of stuff to work around here with with everything that's going on because this wasn't again something that was planned and so we're getting our feet under us now that it's three years in and kind of know what to expect but we're grateful for all of you because without all of you yeah this would be nothing I would just be some introvert in a in Washington so uh the question gets asked a lot how can they support you how can we support him uh yeah check on that again I know you spoke about it earlier but yeah you know by watching my videos that's important I know a lot of people subscribe and I do appreciate the subscriptions those are those are good but uh yeah I get paid if I get views and then also you know understanding that when I do put out sponsorships I'm doing it to help support my family right support the support the channel um there is going to be like I said a merch or where you can buy stuff but you can also even make donations there you know people have told me I need to get a patreon need to get a patreon need to get a patreon tonight I just haven't because I just trying to figure that out but I do know that there's people that want to support me so I appreciate the fact that you're you're well willing and wanting to support me I'm working on that so um yeah just trying to make sure that I do it right because it's not it's not a money grab thing just trying to be able to support and I want to be able to do more um it's come to light about foster care my heart is to want to help our foster care system if I can uh on a pretty big scale I'm going to start traveling a little bit more for things and then hopefully get get to meet some of you right and that would be amazing I'd love to meet meet you individually uh you know because but I have people all over the world which makes it a little bit difficult that follow me so you know who knows what what ends up happening there but so I am grateful for all of you thank you thank you for everything I really appreciate your support and your continued support too and uh trying to just do the best that I can to help you know when I first started the channel I was just trying to get some nuggets out of my head to try to give some guidance to a handful of people and here we are you know uh and still I still want to do that I want to put relevant stuff out there for you that'll help you be the best that best person that you can and then I do share the story of my dad um just because I I want to encourage forgiveness I think forgiveness is powerful and I share that on my book too and Rick helped me a lot with that with helped me talk through it and and I talk about coughing up hairballs to get them out and you know so you can get on with your life and and be the best you that you can be right that's what we want we want to be the best you that you can be and you might be uh you know I was on a local TV show and I remember sharing with the host about forgiveness and victimhood and and all that and she kind of I get it because I was there you know she kind of choked on that a little bit about forgiveness but I think you know if you can forgive and I've shared this in my in a lot of podcasts that I've been on if you can forgive there's freedom in it for you because you and I and I would just be completely transparent I didn't anticipate that I thought that I had something against my dad and somehow uh by me holding on to that that was uh something that would let him off the hook or something like that right but once I did finally forgive him it was freedom for me you know on the other side of that there was Freedom that I didn't anticipate and so I want you to think about that if there's something that you're holding on to from the past that you you can't do anything about the past you can't um and so uh you know you can learn from the past but it's it's um it's amazing that the freedom that you have when you can let go of that and I've also shared you know maybe you've done something that you can't seem to forgive yourself for you've got to learn to be able to let go because you can't do anything about the past you just can't and so you can learn from it and if you have done something that you shouldn't have done and you need to go and ask for forgiveness to somebody you know so anyway I think that's such a powerful thing and that's why I share it that's why I share the story of what I went through I'm sure people have been through way more than I've been through you know I'm not going to see some other people in their comments Yeah Yeah from the past right it's like what some of you guys are going through it breaks my heart to read some of them uh but like Robert's saying you know just keep moving forward you do what's right you know don't worry about what other people are doing you do what's right start with yourself and try to do your best yeah and if we can make this kind of a a pact with us and we I think we can make a difference in the world that you know try to encourage people and you know to to be able to forgive I think unfortunately we're going over here but I feel like this is on my heart kind of sharing my heart here but I I think that um in the world we're you know when we were younger we didn't have all these distractions of social media and phones and all that and so you really have to be disciplined to put it down and have dinner together right sit around with your family and have dinner together and no phones and connect I think that's so powerful you gotta carve that time out and so if we can you know do our little part and then have this thing grow to where we have an impact on the world right this this channel is worldwide and so I'm still trying to get my head around that but and I you know I do understand that there's different cultures and all that that I can't speak to because but I but I do when I married my wife being Filipino it opened up a whole new world to me of her culture and what that looks like and so I do try to try to understand that you know there's people in the world's a crazy Place yeah we're an amazing place I should say it's just you know it's so so massive but anyway I just want to share my heart with you with that because I think uh you know if we can each do our own little part yeah make such a huge difference uh you know might not you might not see it for a while but if we can grow this thing and continue to support each other and encourage each other to try new things and be the best you that you can be right you might not feel like I can ah there's so many problems in the world you can't do you know I'm getting huge things but you can make a difference in your little area right in your and start spreading kindness too we've talked about kindness and I think uh people um get confused with being nice and being kind I I struggle with that and I talked about that on the podcast with nice it's good to be nice but you also don't want to be a doormat and be walked on right I look at kindness as more of a choice whether that person deserves it or not or whether you feel like they deserve it or not you can still show kindness to them right they think of meekness and weakness a lot of people get confused with meekness because Jesus was meek and so it wasn't weak and so because the words are so close together I think people look at meekness as a as a weakness and really I think meeknesses strength under control where you're you know maybe you have a right to lash out but you choose not to you choose to be kind and have compassion on that person uh so anyway I just I think we could do some amazing things uh and so I wanted to wanted to share that with you yeah and it made me think we're going over quick um also if you've been hurt by uh someone uh when I you know um don't carry that on if your parent wasn't didn't well then I had a quick temper or whatever don't allow that continue to the Next Generation stop it if you know it's wrong and don't use that as an excuse you know my dad or whatever no stop that stuff you do what's right and don't use other people's uh mistakes uh to justify your own right um yeah break the cycle break the cycle because you don't make the cycle it's your life right you you get to be who uh who you get to be right this is your life now and the past unfortunately again and it might take you a while it might have to go to therapy you might have to get you know some help to talk through it but um to keep carrying that into the future is just not it's just not helpful because and I shared this again on another podcast this last week I was on and it's like it's energy that's being spent spin in that plate keeping that plate spinning while I'm meanwhile I'm trying to do my life oh that's right but I got to keep that plate spinning over here while I'm still navigating my own life and it just takes energy from you that you could be spending on better things or new things or what what have you yeah you kind of it's yeah where's that so and that saying and then we'll wrap this up that saying of uh um unforgiveness is like drinking poison and hoping it somehow hurts the other person it's very true you know as I can speak to that for myself I've I I did that for the longest time where I was not forgiving my dad and and I I think um if you wait for that other person to ask you forgive for forgiveness before you feel like then you can you can forgive may never happen and again in your own best interest it's good to forgive so that you can you can move on and then mate and then in my book I share the story of my dad uh finally at the end near the end of his life he actually asked for forgiveness it was anticlimactic for me and I had people say I thought there was going to be you know well you know I'd already forgiven him um 10 years earlier what or whatever it was but anyway I just want to encourage you with those words because I think that um you know with my channel not only trying to show you how to tie a tie or you know do some uh basic things but I want to also encourage you uh in your life to be uh the kind of person that you know you can look back on and I'm so glad I did that you know that I did I made these choices that are different than maybe what the hand I was dealt you know and then now I'm doing the best that I can so I thank you all right be thankful that you did that because it's in your own best interests okay um we need to dispel this myth that I saw somebody that we're all bald well no these are bald caps yeah also I noticed that we look like someone said hey uh the the the guy was a blue shirt glasses and a hat and then we all got in a lineup together I feel like we we looked like a lineup put the hat back on yeah or a little Guess Who action for the board game will the real Travis Kenny please stand up and yes River spell asked the questions River spell said hey can I in the emails can I ask questions absolutely whatever you want to put in there absolutely that's what we want literally you don't want you don't have to do a story you just say what's up and whatever yeah yeah uh you guys are awesome we've gone way over thanks for putting up with us yeah I thought I was gonna end at 9 45 but um here we go so appreciate you guys Travis do you do birthday parties [Laughter] thank you guys really appreciate you it's always uh Bittersweet when this thing comes to an end because we really do enjoy it and we'll probably do more of them uh but yeah we wanted to make sure to do this since it was my uh three year anniversary on April Fool's Day April Fools thank you everybody [Music] appreciate you love you and thank you take care and God bless go your car and stream

March 22nd what is Monday April 3rd 10th April 10th [Music] wouldn't it be Wednesday at five o'clock today oh okay so if you could be perfect Michelle this is amazing and YouTube live stream event will include the three o'clock agenda for the committee on education and Public Safety unlikely event that we must have properly end this hearing due to Major technical the committee will reconvene to discuss any outstanding business on Monday March 22nd at five o'clock P.M in this room 229 and a public notice will be posted I would have to do it today okay sorry should have read it and corrected it earlier to discuss we will reconvene to discuss any outstanding business on Monday April 3rd 2023 at five o'clock P.M in room 229 and a public notice will be posted on the legislature's website I'd like to take this time to remind our testifiers that due to time restrictions on our hearings we will be limiting testimony to one minute per testifier for bill for for people participating remotely please remain muted and video disabled until shortly before it is your turn to testify when I call your name unmute yourself and your time will begin after your minute is completed staff will mute you so that we can move this hearing along in an orgy and efficient manner we hope that's the hardest thing I have to do okay first up on our joint agenda for the committee on education and Committee on Public Safety and intergovernmental and Military Affairs is Senate concurrent resolution for the internet resolution 34 requesting the Department of Education in collaboration with the Honolulu Police Department to establish and operate a junior Police pilot program at Barrington High School and first to testify is superintendent Kita yashi good afternoon cheers Vice chairs members of the committee Raymond fujino on behalf of the superintendent and the Department of Education we stand in our written testimony offering comments thank you for this opportunity and individual and support Kendrick Farm is she here oh he sorry I'm chair Mr chair members of the committee um I stand in support of this resolution and I'm here for any questions thank you help me testifiers I have are there any questions of our testifiers Doe okay so I'm reading your testimony can you share it with the public so they know what your testimony entails okay okay [Music] sorry I just have the talking points I didn't tell me okay on the pilot program we feel difficult for uh to initiate and sustain without the expertise and support of the whole Honolulu police department so I think that'll be key and as well as appropriated funding for the program um I don't think this is a normal kind of curriculum that you know one of our teachers can can take over so I think if we have the proper partnership and appropriate funding I think we could do it but that'll be integral part of it okay so is there have you ever had an interaction with um no we haven't no and is that something that you think that um folks would want to do I'm not yeah I was trying to connect with um principal carbonella if this was you know a program that he initiated but I could not uh neighborhood board board would there be space on the campus for such yeah I'm not sure I'm not sure like how detailed this kind of training because I when the title came out junior Police it was assigned to us because our driver traffic safety education program especially you know our RT John Meeker does the jpo field day and does uh pedestrian safety but when reading the resolution it seems that like a kind of like a police yeah a training program for potential police candidates and yes that's something um you know I think would have to be done at a higher level than myself that could be done at the community yeah I think um because the is it the age of a police officer you can't go straight from high school right you need to have oh okay thank you very much okay hold this again oh sorry okay sounds like um the only reason why um it's interesting I just was talking to Senator cadani because I remember Farrington and Campbell had um I don't think it was called the police it was called what what was being said here junior Police or police cadet at the time and they had programs and the police I don't know if they still do it now but they used to wear all very very late blue clothes and they used to have the patch and they did that and the reason was that but not only for service but some of these Cadets good goal and After High School um interim league with college or whatever interning to the time to reach 21 to go into the academy and that was a pathway to the academy because you kind of carry one gun um registry to 21 but you could go to the academy and start learning channeling the police to have ongoing recruitment so I mean even if this resolution saying that there's no pathway um probably there's a way of of changing it around us so that these guys can have the training and if they want to continue the field because when I went Campbell uh you know 80s um they did it with the program before I came at Grandma High School my freshman year and I was looking forward into doing that but I mean if I did that I wouldn't be here and I'll be our chief the police but if you don't say it had programs so you weren't you were to find Canada for HPD back then yeah can you go look um maybe you know okay I don't know if you can I like this yes I know I recall there was a program yeah can you look I'm not sure where from where yeah okay how it was structured okay because I know Farrington had it and I know Campbell hair because my family went to fairy I think kanuki had some what year was that I mean early mid 70s and then they put away with it in 1983-84 they did away with it before I went to Campbell I'm sorry I mean it should have something right yeah I mean um assistant chief before he used to leave that before okay yeah John McCartney ask him because I remember we're talking about that I thought it was I thought Fairington still had the program so I thought I said I didn't know they did away with it okay okay thank you for the questions for anything on to accentures the next two resolutions are Senate concurrent resolution 70 and Sr 63 both the encouraging Congress to look at lending practices for online libraries for our testifiers list we have Stacy Aldrich from the State Library hi good afternoon chairs Vice chairs members of the committee on behalf of State librarian Stacy Aldridge we stand on our written testimony so thank you thank you that's all I have as indication of intent to testifiers measure anyone else online or in person that would like to testify on these two resolutions yes Amanda um Aloha members of the chamber chair Vice chairman and all that are present my name is Amanda Ibanez I'm a neighborhood board member for more than a decade Vice chair for Khalid Paloma District number 15.

[Music] [Laughter] [Music] every time foreign [Music] thank you [Laughter] yeah [Music] what's going on is everything else [Music] it's great [Music] yes oh [Music] it's great to see you [Music] um what did they all said I see a couple of them coach what do you think thank you [Music] how many days [Music] thank you [Music] all right he's here oh my gosh this is amazing how are you busy yeah thank you all right guys ladies and gentlemen we're going to get started if everybody could uh gather uh gather around good afternoon ladies and gentlemen my name is Danny robertosie I'm the proud superintendent of the Clifton Public School District and even prouder to be here today at such a momentous occasion we have a very brief program today I'm going to say a few words our athletic director Mr melayhee will say a few words and our board president Mr Smith will say a few words and also recognize many of the dignitaries we have with us today so thank you to our Board of Education members who are here our city council Representatives who are here um you will be recognized formally by our board president but the most important people that are here today is this group of young people here um it's four years ago that I became the superintendent and the first thing that I did in the first two months here in Clifton was toured the facilities and I remember seeing the the old tennis courts for the first time and thinking that they were probably original to to the building and probably outdated and probably maybe not even safe and I asked a few questions and I remember speaking to coach at the time and making a promise to the coach that I would do everything in my power to try to upgrade the facilities for our students I hope that what you see today with only with the support of the Board of Education I hope that what you see today you are very proud of and I hope that it gives you Pride knowing that you get to play for a district that cares about you that wanted to provide you with excellent facilities so that you could represent our community really well I think it's important to note that this entire project was funded through capital reserve funds but not to get too technical but what that means is there was no additional taxpayer money utilized for this for these grounds as you may or may not know we have many facility projects going on through the district new uh heating ventilation and air conditioning systems paid for through our referendum new security vestibules paid for through our referendum but this particular project was something that I'm proud to say was was done without any additional burden uh to the taxpayer so I think that's something that should be applauded [Applause] gives me a great pleasure to introduce our athletic director Mr Tom mullehy who's going to share a few words Tom thank you Dr robitosi uh thank you everybody for for being here on behalf of our tennis program our tennis coaches coach Cole long time coach he's the head girls coach whitwer is the head boys coach who's been there for a couple years coach Parisi and Coach Giordano our assistants and we also have a long time assistant coach Ann Tate who wasn't able to attend today but I know she's very excited for this project just want to thank quickly the administration Dr robitosi and uh the central Administration as well as our board for their commitment to Athletics the amount of facility upgrades that we've had over the last few years has really been impressive I can't think of another uh districts that that's done as much in such a short time so thank you very much uh just a quick story 10 years ago when I got to Clifton High School one of the first projects that I wanted to do was the tennis courts and I called the resurfacing company in Montclair and he said no offense but um I've been called about six or seven times over the past couple years and no one's ever done anything so for for this board and this Administration to um give us this beautiful product that we have here we're very excited and um no pressure guys but you have to win a lot of matches here all right our boys and girls that's definitely going to do a lot of winning here and make a lot of memories so that's all I've got and I'm going to give it back to Dr robitosi so thank you Mr melaye at this time it's my honor to introduce our Board of Education president uh Mr Jim Smith to say a few words thank you thank you to everyone that has come out today uh we're so glad that we had some good weather uh so we're wearing our short sleeves and our shirts and uh the microphones falling here um so I before I say a few words I'd just like to introduce some dignitaries that are here today uh from our uh friends across the street uh at City Hall we have our city manager Mr Nick Villano here councilwoman Rosemary Pino [Applause] and councilman Tony Latona I think that's everyone from the city right okay and um the Board of Education who was determined and dedicated to making sure that this project took place uh it was very important for the boy for the board to come forward and let the tennis team the tennis coaches and the tennis program know that they are just as important as any other uh sport in in Clifton High School so this is the product of um the board's faith and dedication into the uh to the program and the board was asked to uh go out and find a way that we could add the fifth tennis court so that we could have a tournament style tennis matches here that you needed that fifth tennis court and uh we turned to our ever faithful Architects Rodney's here representing our Architects and we thought in no way would it possibly be able to be done but as you see it it was done and it's a tremendous tremendous facility now for tennis and this board worked very hard to to make that happen for you guys so I'd just like to introduce the people that were involved in this and continue to be involved in every aspect of your education and extracurricular life here at Clifton High School so from our Board of Education um we have I'll just start over here with commissioner Fahim abdrabo [Applause] we have commissioner Richie uh over here we have a commissioner Judy basford [Applause] and we're uh Mr Alan Paris Mr farasawad and Mr Tony Santiago so from our Central Administration we have our assistant superintendents we have Mr Martin Caro and Mrs Janina kusilevich and someone very important to the projects that are happening around Clifton right now we have our our top uh project uh manager um and Mr Al marcione [Applause] um I always forget his title because he does so so much in our district but um a director of student uh Mike help me out there you go director of operations Mr mic doctor [Applause] um and then obviously from um our high school administration [Music] um we have your ever faithful um principal here Mr Ahmad shahada no I'm Ahmed sorry our assistant business administrator Mr Ahmed shahada and with our building principles um let me start over where are we Mr Waka [Applause] Mr Keegan and our director of uh security who we're so glad to have back um Miss Megan it's not Conti it's Conti Still Miss Megan Conti foreign a former Board of Education member who was part of this project and uh was dedicated into making sure this happened uh former board member Mr Jim Daly [Applause] so again we are continued dedicated to the extracurricular programs here at Clifton High School to the sporting programs to our wonderful um trainers trainer Tom and trainer Nicole for all the work that you do for our athletes we're very appreciative of that and I hope that you all will enjoy taking a look around and seeing the great tennis courts um the great job that we put in that retaining wall over there and then hopefully in the next coming weeks you'll also see um the dedication to the great uh Banfield uh that is up at the top so again students players tennis players we wish you all the very best in your season here and in any Endeavors you take on from Clifton High School and we hope that these courts will bring you much luck and success in all that you do thank you all very much thank you so much Mr Smith before we take a couple pictures and cut the ribbons uh I think it's important to note that because the the previous facilities were um in such bad shape and not really regulation we haven't had a home match here in Clifton in three years and even then we only had one so for the first time ever you will have at least as many home matches as you have uh you know going away you know home court advantage is a big deal and the fact that you couldn't represent Clifton High School on your own turf is something that has now been corrected so I think that's an important thing to note um without any further Ado what I'd like to do is I'd like to have the Board of Education Members First to come up we'll take a picture uh and then I'd like the students and the dignitary the rest of our dignitaries to join us in a group picture uh and then we'll we'll cut the ribbon and then you can wander around pick up a tennis racket but don't hurt yourself okay and as Mr Smith mentioned sometime in the near future we will do another brief ceremony for the opening of our of our new Banfield which is also stunning if you get a chance if you haven't seen it take a walk up there and take a look at it so if I could have the Board of Education members come up please who's got the scissors Jim you go in the Middle with the scissors if I can have our friends from city council and then Mr Villano join us for a picture please Mr Honda um thank you yeah if we could have uh the team come together coaches coaches in the team come on up right in the middle and we're going to go around you but you know what let's do a picture of the coaches and the teams today [Music] you're gonna have to three two one thank you okay stay there guys I'll take the cherries please Administration dignitaries and then after this picture Mr Smith you got the scissors you will do the honors I'm right here [Music] girls come in come on I'm not going to be able to see you guys go upstairs excellent all right yeah good luck all right I just this gentleman in the green back there just refuses to be photographed there we go three two one and one more for insurance sorry three two one great thank you [Applause] Patrick [Applause] yeah the lady from the girls [Applause] thank you [Applause] that will conclude the ceremonies you're free to walk around and take a look and uh as always we thank our staff um Mr Rose Mr makani and Mr Mecca thank you all for your help and assistance with this and with everything all year long thank you all for coming today [Music]

um when this is about the junior Police program at Farrington I'm born and raised and live in kaliki Library over on the library oh um sorry I thought this was still the other one okay I'm sorry we'll confirm with the education chair she says that we will allow you to testify the two previous resolutions oh okay thank you thank you John um so going back to um I'm born and raised in Kalihi and um I've also worked in the doe and currently I work at DHS and I do a lot of Outreach in the community and I do share the same sentiment with Senator Kirk Favela that these programs that once were Upon a Time did a lot of Justice to the community a lot of good community service came out of it and for some reason through the decades such great programs have been done away with for whatever natural attrition or things that have happened but for the community that I currently live in I have seen it um become kind of derelict and it's more like a US versus them a lot of the youngsters feel like HPD is the enemy or we fight them or we don't cooperate when we need to and um I want to change that rhetoric that we are one Oahu and men and women in blue are also our community leaders and they're family members too and we're not separate so I want to create I don't know that's why I came up with this idea of that pilot program that we take care of each other and we're not separated and that also helps for my community for the youngsters to have great jobs and um to have that mentorship program to stay out of trouble to be healthy to have good practices and to also be Community leaders in their own home so that's what I wanted to share thank you so much thank you we're going to move back to study concurrent resolution 70 and scr63 is there anyone else to testify on these two Library resumes yes hi Amanda um I was wondering if I could request the same um can you keep it to one minute though okay yeah okay so um I'm gonna be testifying in support of the junior Police pilot program um you know while we do support the intent of the measure um it is kind of lacking into planning um and the presenting of the policies for the pilot program the resolution is vague and ambiguous um is it the intention of the pilot program to train students to be then dispatched as officers is it the intention to provide vocational training and Workforce Development to prepare them for After High School to replace senior officers um is the intention to replicate an existing pilot program you know before taking action on this resolution it employers for further consideration for other pilot programs there are three Junior pilot programs um and exists to our cares uh research knowledge we research these three one the GPA program two the law enforcement explorers program and three the Guam Junior police cadet pilot program the jpo program is implemented through hpd's Junior police officer program and it started in 1921 and gpos are trained in leadership civic responsibility and help ensure the safety of fellow students as they arrive at and to preference School the law enforcement explorers program also from HPD trains students to use excessive force to break open doors and to use firearms the Guam pilot program um curriculum conceptualizes friendship Harmony and understanding so therefore um you know it's very vague and ambiguous but we are in support um you know because we really want to elevate this resolution um and the intention for safety in our communities thank you thank you for the opportunity to testify is there anyone else we should testify on setting resolution 70 and Sr 63.

okay the 38 was was reduced to 27. yeah so we've been adding classroom teachers to reduce class sizes over the last couple of years um Chad uh you've been a secondary teacher and a secondary administrator as well and I think had a chance to research this model is this a model that you support in your position of a person who is helping with our money situation absolutely yes although we're asking for an additional appropriation is this money that should be available to us yes during the course of this year for with the revenues that we're expecting to have both through revenues and existing cash balance if revenues for some reason were flat okay okay um what what fun would the money come from with this resolution this would be education fund knowledge education anytime we have ongoing it's an ongoing every year cost particularly for personnel that's where it belongs okay okay so the education fund would be made up of dollars from the state level so my income taxes my sales tax I pay all the different things that go into the state right they come back to us from a tuition funding that's correct so if I so it doesn't impact my local property taxes that's correct education fund is not funded by local property taxes at all okay so besides the education fund what was the what's the name of another fund that might be thought of that the money's coming from the only other places where we currently play we pay some salaries out of Grant funds but the only other significant portion where we pay teacher salaries from is the referendum fund that operating referendum okay now that fun maybe in confusion just making sure that Community is aware that fund does come from property taxes that's correct right so the F taking from the education fund just making sure that it is clear that there's not an increase to people's taxes with this request for an appropriation that's correct okay what was the increase with the referendum 5.3 million dollars per year for eight years towards teacher salaries alone and then an additional separate amount for added support staff classified staff salary increases so someone would demonstrate that we're using that money well we come back in eight years well less than that now 2028 and have to ask for it again okay um are there any administrators salaries in the spend of those referendum dollars zero so the tax okay um so given that and as we look at the modeling is the education fund the only fun we can use if we choose to increase administrators it's the it's not the only phone we can use but it's the only fund we currently use for administrators that aren't Grant funded um I'll give you the couple of examples of exceptions to that that come from the operations fund um Nick Williams and Brett Bozeman because they are the operation side of things they come from the operations fund okay okay all right but these positions being building level administrators all building level administrators are funded from the education fund currently okay thank you Chad uh Charles Gina Chad anything in terms of other questions that we've heard um as as people have considered this this possibility that you would you would want to comment on that I didn't didn't ask you a question about okay all right any questions from the board before Nikki we would open it up for Public public comment saying that I am absolutely positively behind the team approach and the relationship building approach that this model um would hopefully produce my question is this how how much consideration was given to being able to shift to such a model either with a reshifting of current staff members or with just or with a significantly more it's significantly minimal increase to adding staff members thank you I'll take a shot of that question I think the best answer from where I sit is we are doing it with as few people as we can in terms of implementing a system or a model um similar to the one that we saw and similar to the one that we we benchmarked so I think I think we are doing it with as few folks as we possibly can in order to implement a similar model I'll just I'll just add to that I I agree um you well you know this all right I'm going to point out something that's obvious public schools are not every public school is staffed tightly as tightly as they could possibly be to serve the the needs of students we can't just increase revenues um you know by increasing profits by selling more widgets and so the revenues we come in we staff with the people we can afford primarily as much of that going towards the classroom as possible so it's not as though in a maybe in a private setting a private sector setting where you can reduce one sector of your business and then redirect those resources towards another sector here you know we basically we basically are staffed incredibly tightly yeah and then when researching the model Mr Grimes we we started with a review of the current staff we had and how those positions could fit into uh this model and and then took it from there in in terms of trying to create a number that would get the best and and most immediate results um and even in in some conversations we're advised that maybe an additional administrator was going to be necessary example Columbus's to be able to make the model work where we started off with two there was asked to to increase that to three um and as you know administrative cost is can be significant any other questions yep so I want to Echo Mr Grimes the statement that I'm 100 behind and supportive of the team's approach um I did have some concerns after reviewing um Miss London did send us the list of all the teachers and surveys feedback and many teachers identified this as rushed and needs to be in conjunction with other things and other items so I want to make sure that those themes are covered and whatever approach is brought out and the themes that I saw was how are we going to handle advisory period which I believe is after when I was there so that's one theme truancy limiting the number of resource periods disciplinary action and increased communication I think when we get to that final structure we need to make sure those themes are accounted for to make sure that we have Frontline buy-in of this approach because I was concerned I think out of the 50 or 70 responses Miss London uh sent to us I think one or two from the high schools was in support of the timing and the pro approach most of them were go with the approach but did feel that it was rushed so it's more of a statement on making sure that those themes are included in whatever Final Approach comes here appreciate that maybe just echoing that but um but to emphasize there was there were quite a few comments from teachers about um the the implementation of advisory if it was consistent across the board and I think that's really really important actually it fits in here with this new model well because I think this is true at both schools that advisory advisories are by grade level um and and they're also the purpose of advisory one of the main purposes was to have a relationship building time with students so I I would hope that part of this process is to revitalize the consistent implementation of advisories yeah so just so uh everybody has a perspective on where Brownsburg High School stands within the state of Indiana it's the it's pretty highly ranked they have a 99 graduation rate they have 78 reading proficiency 57 math proficiency so there are some things that they're doing right but just this there's two pages front and back to the surveys you can see it's yellow I didn't print it yellow so I actually read this uh I tried to understand it as best as I could and it's been mentioned by two or three other people now that in-class support is one thing I would add it sounds like teachers wish to have more help in the classroom they'd like to have smaller class sizes review of advisories on the list there were comments about discipline in the classroom attendance tardy hallway passes all these things that kind of tie together advice advisory is hard to advise kids that don't show up to the classroom they don't get a grade for it so what's the advantage for them to be there so we collectively have to look at that now and understand from you the teachers and parents that are out there that are involved with this every day what what doesn't doesn't work I think one thing that I saw more than anything was the restructuring is happening way too fast and I don't think I would disagree too much with that I think there's one of the suggestions I had requested was can we do one school instead of both just to make sure we have processes procedures in place that work rather than going out and trying to do it a little too fast in two schools and get overwhelmed last thing we want to do is have teachers pulling their hair out because they can't manage because it's so much different happening so fast and the kids will not benefit from that so so I think there's some things there I think this is looks like for the people that are at home watching playing at home there's a lot of people out here in the crowd and I would imagine that there's a decent number of you that are wanting to talk about this so it'd be really interesting to hear what you have to say and it's probably consistent with this and I think we've had several people talk to it so I'll be quiet now thank you Mr major any other questions or comments from the board before we turn it over to the public no okay I think we do have a couple of people who wish to speak on this topic so and a reminder they did not have to sign I think a couple of them started signing in yeah but that's not necessary for the public here so so I think the process is you can just come on up state your name um do we give three minutes three minutes um open open mic night okay if I like to comment ask questions comments on the appropriation yes sir yes okay you get I think that was coming sorry why not thank you if you just wouldn't mind stating your name to get us started I'm a homeowner in Columbus and Bartholomew County I also um several rental properties here locally so I pay my taxes I'm a teacher at Columbus North High School and a member of cea I've lived in Columbus for most of my adult life I felt compelled to speak tonight in regards to the proposed restructuring of the high schools at a cost of 1.2 million per year I'm concerned about the lack of data regarding the major change the lack of input from stakeholders and a proposed amount of money to be spent these concerns have prompted feelings of bewilderment and Grave concern in me and although it's difficult to do so I'd like to separate my teacher response from my homeowner taxpayer response as much as possible because I'm wearing two different hats so first of bewilderment and that is largely connected to my role as an educator in the community the Administration has developed many initiatives over the years for the high schools they include that are not limited to PBIS udl advisory block schedule have it to mind social and emotional learning senior projects the three R's gross mindset I grad and so on I may be missing a few some teachers are feeling the effects of initiative fatigue at this point it's less than two years ago we've restructured our school day for Block scheduling and advisory during the pandemic the rationale behind that was not graduation rates by the way but relationships with students unfortunately the advisories are staffed only by the teachers the department chairs counselors principals themes Etc do not staff the advisories so that relationship building has continued to be between teachers and students and not administrators and the students that would be a very easy change to us I think and it would cost absolutely nothing these initiatives were all supposed to advance student academic and social success all the initiatives have required time training and resources from teachers and administrators and now the administration is asking for another initiative to restructure the administration of eastern North again over the course of the last few weeks cea asked for evidence of whether the established initiatives are working or not we did not get a definitive answer that included statistics and data just an anecdotal answer perhaps the administrators might share their data with the school board but they have not shared it with us I think administrators have an obligation to provide statistical data to the board members about their initiatives and the success or failure of them as some of them are not working or actually producing results counter to Student Success in regards to factors such as attendance and graduation rates then we need to eliminate them before trying new initiatives in addition the restructuring is taking place very quickly with virtually no input from stakeholders such as the community at large parents students who have really good input when you ask them or teachers the only survey that was done to my knowledge was done by cea members we shared this with the administrators the teachers Deans counselors and principals are bewildered and uncertain about the future parents and students are largely in the dark about these proposed changes am I cut off or may I finish one more minute to allow you to finish okay I come from a lower middle class family where I had to pay my way through college and I'm a single parent so I like to think I'm able to budget I would like to suggest that you require the administration to supply data in print of the success or failure of their initiative consider asking the administration to go back to the drawing board and try to find a way to do the restructuring without spending any money and if you must move forward with the initiative would you please consider a faith implant starting with the seniors if the data suggests that we're moving the needle on graduation rates and a statistically significant way then consider adding classes but one at a time in a fiscally conservative way um I appreciate your listening as the school board members you represent the voices of the 52 000 Plus members of the community and I hope that you will consider that thank you thank you Miss hand is there anyone else who would like to speak on the appropriation topic hello if you just wouldn't mind sharing your name before you get started you probably yes ma'am please thank you I didn't mention that before I'm sorry I didn't see him I could hear her my name is Carla Craig I am a homeowner and also I am the library assistant at Mount Healthy Elementary and I guess my question would be what impact on the amount of teachers that we get to have will having more administrators cause so that's that's my question um my comment would be that we know that children get their basic personalities by like about the age of three um and it to me and I I haven't heard a lot about this so um it doesn't sound like a bad idea but I would think that starting at a younger age would make more sense um we need to make sure that our elementary school children are able to read and do math and social studies whatever before they get to high school so that would be my comment I don't quite understand why the focus is after they've already missed so much school and they've already got habits um it just seems like it would make more sense to start at a younger age is there anybody who'd like to respond to the questions some of those were kind of phrased as questions I'm just asking my response to that I don't disagree that we need to provide supports all the way from pre-k through 12 if we would invest dollars specifically and only at let's say ages K through two at this time and it's successful for the purpose that we were working on which is graduation rates we won't know that for 10 years so the investment that we are looking at at this moment in time are is very specifically at the high school recognizing that there there are efforts that have to be worked on and done throughout the entire school system thank you Dr Roberts anyone else like to speak good evening my name is Laura Daly I am head of the business department at Columbus North High School and a resident of Bartholomew County homeowner to as Barbara mentioned and just wanted to offer some comment this evening not to reiterate to many of the things that have been well said before my opportunity to speak but we have many things in place uh all with the hope of we want students to graduate we do all have that as the same goal um so but how do we go about that work and so many of the things that we have in place that have been mentioned I don't know if igrad was mentioned but adding igrad years ago and uh all the things that were to come of that our block schedulings and advisory were some of our most recent changes that we went through to help support social emotional learning but also building collaboration with students and relationships those are things why do kids come to school relationships okay and the things that they enjoy but how do we get them there and we are concerned as well as teachers that the graduation rate is declining but how do we go about it I would really like to challenge in this process to one slow down and really look at are we going to get the results that we're hoping to get we aren't Brownsburg but our what kind of projections can we do to see what results we might could reasonably expect some actual numbers some statistical analysis and some data there to support that uh would be one thing so I'm not completely opposed to the idea but being more methodical and how we go about it and implementing it we have rushed to implement things in the past Bridge and we learned a lot from that and I hope that as we are certainly wanting to urgently address the declining graduation rate but be thoughtful in how we go about the work so that it's meaningful and builds credibility with students and builds collaboration and credibility across our building to support the initiatives um and I think that's all I wanted to say thank you thank you Miss daily okay no go go ahead you had time left keep going there was something else that was coming to my mind in that because here's what I wanted to say and it kind of dovetailed from the last comment but I hope that in this process of evaluating things I hope that we would um really take some courage to look at our entire district and how we're doing some things and maybe there are some things that we need to combine resources how can we better utilize some of the places where we're already diverting Monies to and that takes courage to make those kinds of changes but really looking at what are some systemic changes that we can make to help pay for some of the things we want to do of these other initiatives but just combining those resources and using them most effectively so taking that systems approach to things and really Having the courage to flip that and see what is it that we can do differently to achieve that better graduation rate thanks for giving me the opportunity to say that thank you okay anyone else who would like to speak on the preparation topic okay thank you we will vote on this item a little bit later in the agenda okay oh I'm sorry sir go ahead hi my name is Tony London and I promised myself I wouldn't say anything tonight but being a politician myself I find myself incapable by the way I'm a Republican I don't know if that matters or not but as a general rule I have a problem with additional Appropriations particularly a additional appropriations of this size and it's just a general uh issue I have with them I think such a wholesale change should be done at budget time I do feel like I try to stay as informed on what the school's doing because I have have a daughter in bcsc and had a son in bcsc and and I uh this is a big big leap it's a big change and um everybody in this room wants graduation rates to be a hundred percent and it sounds like a fantastic project but I would ask that the board table this request at this time so as more information can be gathered and uh and that the it wouldn't require an additional appropriation but would be done at budget time thank you thank you Mr London Miss London you don't need a introduction but if you wouldn't mind saying your name just to be formal about it it's nice of you to say it's normally my husband Mr London that doesn't need the introduction and people know me as Tony London's wife how does Amy London a school teacher her parent or now I have Kate's mom or Charlie's mom um I just first of all I want to say thank you to everybody who's taken time to look at this especially Mr Edwards everybody who went to Brownsburg I I really appreciate that on Thursday all of the employees from bcic have the opportunity to hear Dr Mark Brackett speak and um as the title of his book is permission to feel the subject has given us a lot of permission to feel there's a lot of emotions around it for lots of people whether it be money whether it be duties jobs information they got from a survey I'm asking you to look at the data I'm asking you to as a board to ask for the data my point is that if your car breaks you're not going to just decide well I'm going to get a new car and I'm going to go spend I think I heard some of my husband say this morning it's forty eight thousand dollars now for a new car is the average you're not just going to go buy a new car you're going to take it to the mechanic and say how can I fix what I've got going on and that's what I'm asking you to do as a representative as the president of the Columbus Educators Association our members as the exclusive representatives of teachers in bcsc our members are asking you to look at what we're currently doing and see how it is impacting our graduation rate and then from there how can we take those awesome folks that we have those udl folks those folks working on PBIS there's classroom folks how can we take them and make our graduation rates better see what happens let's see what information we get maybe we'll get the information that says no we need to implement what's going on at Brownsburg high school and do something similar here I don't know because we don't have that yet so as president of CA I'm asking you on behalf of our members table this vote take some time to look at the data look at the current practices that we have in bcsc and decide where to go from there thank you very much I appreciate your time thank you Miss London well hi I'm Amy Menefee just as a parent I have a daughter at East so I'm really not sure what the discussion is about it sounds like it's a huge change for what's going on so I don't know how many parents even know what this changes or how it will affect our children um I think that we I want to thank we've been having some school board meetings public engagement meetings about transparency I think has been a great thing with the school board I want to thank everyone that's been doing that and this is part of that discussion with the public engagement transparency is a big issue especially for parents to know what's going on so I'm concerned as a parent knowing that there's a lot of teachers wanting there to be a pause on this big change so I just wanted to speak for parents who may not even know what the change is and what the plan is it may be a great one but I don't think a lot of parents know what the actual change is okay I might just respond real quick Mr Wilson Amy um the the March board meeting I don't know if you were here at that particular okay okay so we did have a presentation on it then and then they we had a strategic planning session on Friday March 24th that was open to the public too and also reviewed the information of the board and then I see Janna sitting in the front row here she did an article on it just the last couple of days so we do we do have a couple of situations or have had some opportunities to take a look at it but in short the the concept of the model is to create teaming um at 9th 10th at 11th and 12th grade so as an example The Freshman Class nothing would change in the classrooms for them but the support structures outside of that the model would indicate they would have an assistant principal for that class an academic or instructional coach for that class A guidance counselor for that class Administrative Assistant for that class and then those individuals would follow that class through graduation so when you hear the comments about developing relationships and so forth the job of those individuals assigned to that class is those kids and their families and getting them across getting through our school corporation and having them success so in a very basic way that's that's the model that we're that we're talking about so in order to implement that model um and in the way that we would like with the number of people I just syndicated that's where the additional Staffing would come in outside of the classroom you're welcome I think the big concern though is if someone doesn't come to a board meeting or you know happen to watch it online that there's no information going out to parents um people you know to know what's actually happening here which we've been talking about like at that meeting I know that there you guys are trying to address that kind of stuff to find more ways for people to know what is going on especially when there's big changes like this that are take you know costing a lot of money so thank you for your your time thanks Miss man interrupt ion Dr Robertson we communicated to the parents at all through parent Square about this change I don't believe it was in the okay this past yeah so yes okay any other the other folks that would like to speak on this topic okay thank you very much for the engagement much appreciated okay next all those folks standing at the back of the room it's your it's your moment okay Columbus North High School State Gymnastics finalists yes we'd like to invite the Columbus North athletic director coaches up Mr Lewis will turn over to you or however you wish to to start things coaches otherwise but first of all I just want to thank the board for allowing us to get recognized tonight um our girls did a great job of kafina at a very high level this year we're actually able to reach the podium as a team and individual which we have a name which we haven't been able to do in the last couple of years so I'll pass the mic to Kayla so that way she can give you some stats on how our season went thank you for having us all tonight and for recognizing this wonderful team they did awesome this season and they worked together as a team and we couldn't have accomplished everything that we did so I kind of wanted to give some looks at what our season was so during our regular season we only had one loss we were conference Indiana Champions we had two all-conference gymnasts Rhys Euler and Lindsay Mullis we finished second place at sectionals and regionals fourth place finish at state and then at state resuler was first team All-State she finished fifth on the Vault second on the uneven bars fourth on the balance beam and then fourth in the all-round so we had a very successful season I just want to kind of go into our state meet we knew that we had to work as a team together and we knew that it took all individuals to make us able to finish in Podium and going into the last event we were neck and neck with another team another couple teams and it took everybody just fighting for it putting their utmost effort to accomplish it and we are super excited for everything that we were able to accomplish yeah you're gonna introduce the girls okay well anyway I'm Bob Arthur um and uh good evening everybody good to be up here again I'm glad uh as Caitlyn said to have the entire team early in the season we were on the floor getting stretching and and I said you know it'd sure be nice for you guys to be immortalized uh with the picture in the Hall of Fame with a fourth place or better finish and they pulled together and did that um you know the excitement for me at that meet was like playing the championship game although I knew we weren't going to be in the top three just but we did Duke it out with four other teams for fourth place and and it just so happened we were the last team up on vault and uh Lake Central and Columbus North are pretty much tied at the end of three events and Lake Central is up on vault first and they scored a 27.1 or 27-2 we at that point had to have a 27-1 to win the meet and um alley down where's Ellie Ellie right there was uh got up there and did an eight nine which was uh her the second best season Vault so I couldn't have expected any more out of her uh Lindsay was the next competitor and scored a 9.2 which I think was probably maybe your third best Vault score so we couldn't expect it anymore out of her now at that point now we've had an eight nine and a 9-2 so we had a nine point average we needed 27 so we needed Reese to go up and score at least a nine nine one and uh she knocked it out of the park it's just if you would have put in a bat since we got the championship game going on uh it was two seconds left in the game she shot the three-pointer to win to get us up there so it was very exciting for me it's probably one of the more exciting um I want to say hello where's Barb I want to say hello to Barb yeah Barb is actually one of my former gymnast it goes back a number of years for her project see in mind I'm not going to tell you how long ago but but I will tell you that I also coached her daughter so that gives you a little bit of an idea uh anyway I'm just so happy and thrilled to be here tonight and have the entire team here because that um it's it's nice to be up here and have an individual recognized but it is absolutely fantastic to have our team and it was a team effort the girls didn't get to compete were the ones that were pushing the ones we had a very tight grouped on where the scores were it made the coaches decisions a very tough to decide who was going to be put in for those meets and we actually even you know made adjustments right up to the end to play the odds but anyway I've talked enough I'll let Caitlyn do the introductions all right so I'll go ahead and introduce each person on our team Miriam niang Reese Euler Laney Acton Lindsay Mullis Braden Bostic Ellie mcinteer Evie Richards r1tn Jaden Greenlee and Hannah Perry and we have two seniors with us tonight as well which are Lindsay and Miriam who this was a great accomplishment for them to have for their senior year [Applause] I'd be remiss if I didn't also introduce one of our other I we she's an assistant by name only she's a very productive member of the coaching staff she's been here for I'm not gonna divulge her privacy either she's been there she's been at it as long as I have so um uh anyway Sandy was here with us at least two nights every week and when we got closer to the end of the season she was in there with us pumping these girls up every night and her expertise and experience was a great value thanks Andy [Applause] [Laughter] situations [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] thank you that was fun okay next on the list we are full of recognitions tonight it's nice to be able to recognize people Mrs Wilden so we have Sid Jane Maverick challenge State finalists so get Laura back up here with uh Sid different hat yes how lucky I get to speak twice right um good evening and and thank you my name is Laura Daly I'm head of the business department at Columbus North High School and um and also a sponsor of the business planning competition Maverick challenge Maverick challenge has been sponsored for many years by our Columbus Area Chamber of Commerce so I would like to thank them for the many years that they have done that and and recognize that Maverick challenge is being embedded now with another business planning competition at the state level called innovate within but since 2008 Columbus North can be proud because every year we've had a Maverick challenge winner from our high school how many years that is to do that math but anyway so that's a good history that we have had we're really proud of that and that continued our students have collected thousands of dollars in their winnings from the competition and they've used that money to seed it into their education maybe personal development I heard there might have been a cruise for someone but also maybe they've seated those things into entrepreneurial endeavors so as that is being merged into the innovate within competition uh we'll we hope to be taking part in that as well but for Maverick challenge I want to talk this evening about Sid Sid created a business plan and his business was called Sid's Studios a digital media marketing business which delivers original and professional and it is professional social media content to customers at an affordable price the mission of Sid Studios is to empower businesses and individuals to build their brand and showcase themselves to the World by growing their online presence so sent presented his business plan at our local round of Maverick Challenge and he was first place there so check number one fifteen hundred dollars right he then also earned a spot to go on to the regional competition competing with the other counties and I'm really proud to say I think this was the first time we had someone placed first at the regional so he collected another fifteen hundred dollars I believe for that um and and while at the same time uh preparing for Maverick challenge he also was preparing to present his plan for innovate within and has made it through the first round there and is planning to present his plan in April so we'll see if there's more checks and accolades to come I feel pretty confident there are I'd like to also say that Sid is participating in Deca and uh just returned from a State Convention where he was elected a state officers vice president of marketing and that is another first for Columbus North to have a state office holder with Deca so we're really proud of that um and did I mention he's a junior so we still have him for another year he maintains an a average uh even among his AP courses took a look at that today he actually runs his business Sid studios and is making someone he's done some great work for businesses and organizations like Tipton Lakes athletic clubs Club k-pops if you've heard of k-pops create for a cause I think he even did something for bcsc right yeah so anyway I'm honored and proud to introduce him to you this evening for this recognition and thank you for this opportunity Sid Jane [Applause] thank you [Applause] your time to shine Sid hello hey guys my name's Sid like Mrs Daley introduced me I really want to thank the community because my business would be nothing without all of you um I especially want to thank Josh as well as he provided me the opportunity to pair with bcsc I have some great Visions for my business and overall growing the community of Columbus who various Endeavors that I want to explore and I want I'm just glad to be a part of the community in Columbus because you guys Empower me every day so thank you so much he definitely has that entrepreneurial mindset so I'm excited to see about what he's going to do in the future okay Dr pleet I'm glad to be part of the amazing recognitions this evening at this time we are going to turn our Focus to recognize the 2023 NF Soldier teacher Award winner and to introduce this great accomplishment and recognition I asked Marcia van neymen to please come up here she's the assistant director for iupuc Center for teaching and learning thank you that's just a tough act to follow with all these student accomplishments but we're up to the challenge thanks for sharing time this evening to recognize an exceptional educator in our community as a reminder the fulture award was designed receive this award to be but to be on the list of Edna Folger recipients who were my own former teachers and having spent my entire teaching career at Rock Creek with some of the most amazing Educators in bcsc I'm also thrilled to now have Rock Creek on that list as well so thank you so much [Applause] thank you now it is time to recognize more teachers that are in room tonight with many family friends and colleagues to help celebrate them for the Teacher of the Year this is our third annual teacher of the year recognition and just to let you know a little bit about it there were nominations open that opened up in the middle of January through the middle of February and they were open for one month and nominations could be made from staff members students parents and community members and sometimes they're family members wanting to celebrate them because they know the work they provide to qualify for this award they must have at least three years of teaching experience in bcsc and the nominations once they're all gathered I provide them to the principals and the department leaders and there is a committee that is formed within the school or the department they review all nominations and the part they don't like is making the determination of who it is they want to celebrate a person but they like to acknowledge everyone that's been nominated as well so we are going to watch a video of the winners from each of the buildings and then we'll talk a little bit more and then have them come up and recognize them foreign [Music] [Applause] [Music] thank you [Music] [Applause] [Music] foreign [Music] thank you [Music] [Applause] [Music] thank you [Music] so of those winners we can say that we had 519 nominations that exceeds the previous two years of the amount of nominations we received we will be recognizing 19 teachers this evening if we count this year as a year of service for all the teachers being recognized collectively the teachers have 300 and 306 and a half years of experience serving our students in the bcsc community that is only their bcsc experience may not account for experience prior to bcsc um the next thing after this is that they want to be considered as bcsc's teacher of the year the one that will be announced in August they have a to complete an application that's been shared with them by May 19th a little bit of good thing I'm not handing out certificates or anything because we're going to buy them some little bcsc swag for being their building winner so that they'll get to select and this summer a bcsc committee will meet to review all the applications submitted to determine the bcsc teacher of the year that will be recognized during an August meeting and the teacher that does win the ultimate award for bcsc has nine months to prepare their application for the Indiana Department teacher of the year recognition so at this time I'm going to introduce the teachers and they will come up line up and at the end Elementary here to present a best practice tonight this is good evening thank you board for taking a few moments tonight to allow us to present what we think is the best practice at Parkside Elementary School as you can see on the screen we want to talk tonight a little bit about reading foundational skills and something we're doing at Parkside that we think is working anytime we think about uh instruction and learning at school we always take a look at it through the udl lens first and we think that what we're presenting tonight fits very well in that model in that framework of udl as far as multiple means of representation and multiple means of Engagement so as you watch a couple of videos that we have in here what our teachers have to say think about that while we're going along also we also like to spend a little time with our uh the Strategic plan because we try to base everything as Dr Roberts knows around the Strategic plan and we also feel like what we present tonight to you will also fit very well with equal Equitable access to all as far as they're learning a little bit of History before we get started the bcsc elementary curriculum team did a book study last spring I believe and it was around the science of reading and the book was called Shifting the balance Dr hack Jeannie long and the rest of the curriculum team has since then started a leadership Series where they brought in teachers and my two teachers here attended that and they did the science or reading at one of those that day we also at Parkside Mrs bodart my two teachers and so forth took two of our PD days this year and worked with our K-2 teachers on the science of reading the book study they did we did a book study with them as well I'm sorry K through three teachers actually and all the classified staff that worked with instructionally with those students as well to improve what we're doing with reading Foundation skills so I'll let Dana this mod art talk to you a little bit more about the history of that and where we're going hello everyone my name is Dana bodard I am the assistant principal at Parkside and just to give you a little bit more background so several years ago we started implementing um a reading strategy of multi-sensory so that's seeing hearing saying sounds words manipulating Hands-On engagement with kiddos we have practiced that through K through two implementing that so that we can be consistent across the school across our building and we immediately started to see results with our kiddos an example is our I read scores last year went from 77 passing to retakes a month later at 87 passing so we see a lot of the things that we're doing supporting the data so that's a little bit about how they're doing it but the science of reading the Shifting the balance really gets into the the what what are what is it that they are working on so during the very first book study that we did the very first PD day that we had we had we're having some discussion around the science of reading and Ashley Christ Johns and Allison Beckner were both very in just passionate you could see the passion in them behind this and so I'm like okay we got to pull them on board with us like I need you to help lead this so I quickly not too quickly but I quickly turned it over to them and wanted them to leave because I know um as well as many people you know if if the teachers are the ones that are doing it and saying it then it must be good right so I'm going to go ahead and turn that information over to them so they can share with you exactly what it is that we're talking about so let me start here with Ashley hi everyone thank you for having us um the first thing that is important information when we look at our best practice we're talking about this evening is the fry sight word list this is a bcsc adopted tool that we use it was developed by Dr Edward Frye of the first 1000 words well not first 1000 words broke into groups of 100 based on the frequency of use um together they make up 90 of the words that we see in children's literature and spoken words so bcsc like I said uses this as our common tool of a word list to gauge um where our students are at so what we have done is kind of shifted our thinking from sight words um from being sight words would be something that you can just read when you see it and for us adults that's lots of words but when we're looking at kindergartners through second graders it's really not that many words until they get some more practice so what we have done this year is broken then into smaller groups based on a phonological or phonics based pattern um so this way students are more successful at decoding the words and learning to read them rather than just memorizing them from rope memorization um we have seen this with South Side as well and they went ahead and did all 300 words rather than just right now we just did kindergarten's first 100 they did all um sorry all 300 words and um have seen great success with that so we look forward to doing that next year just to reintroduce myself I'm Allison Beckner and like Dana said Ashley and I were just super excited when this started because we're both very science people this works but why does it work and that's really how my brain works and I know that we're not the only ones um so the next part that we're going to talk about just a really big buzzword right now that you're going to hear is phonological awareness um so what we're going to start with is this graphic to the side this is Scarborough's reading rope so it is a rope that is entwined with many many different threads so basically it explains that skilled reading takes a complex combination of many skills which fall under either language comprehension on the top or word recognition on the bottom so to have successful language comprehension we have to have our students have to have an understanding of background knowledge vocabulary language structure verbal reasoning and literacy knowledge really complex but it breaks down every single part and then the second part of that is the word recognition and that also has its own skill set that includes the phonological awareness the decoding of words and sight word recognition so um as you'll see the arrows to the side as readers become more highly skilled with lots and lots of explicit instruction and practice the comprehension becomes increasingly strategic and their word recognition becomes increasingly automatic so we're stepping away from the flash card what is this word into let's teach the code and as you're more exposed to it it will become automatic so as we said as readers become more highly skilled those two will increase and that's where you're getting that more tightly wound rope um phonological awareness like I said that buzzword that you're going to hear a lot um it's a big piece of that word recognition that bottom piece you'll see there Shifting the balance that book study that we did um it defines phonological awareness as the umbrella term for any work helping students learn to notice and or manipulate sounds in speech this has no there's no words in involved in this this is just sounds and this is that huge Foundation um so that might be how many words are in this sentence how many syllables are in this word let's produce rhyming words let's break apart this word and change change individual sounds so you're going to see up next an example of intentional phonological awareness practice in Mrs krystron's classroom whereas she is doing a hegerty lesson and hegarty is a research-based 35-week curriculum of daily phonemic and phonological awareness lesson plans so you'll see that next oh [Music] compound words we have two parts of the word and you're gonna blend them together for me are you ready foot ball football baseball so that was just a little snapshot of that um and like going back to the Rope it is very complex with as you see a lot of different parts this is just one tiny little piece but it's an important piece nonetheless so now you're going to ask does it work so what we have so far is thirty percent um growth and phonological awareness from August to December is what we're measuring and that's measured by an oral blending assessment something similar to what you just saw her do those with kids typically we do that with our whole class but we can also do it in small group for re for remediation purposes or for attention span purposes and even more exciting on the bottom 67 percent of kindergarten students are proficient in phonological Awareness as measured by our winter nwea map assessment reading assessment and that's what we use across the district to test our reading so we're really excited where we're at and we're going to keep working okay the next piece that we look at when we think about our foundational skills is guided reading and in the past guided reading has been based on leveled readers um which involves a lot of guessing words unless they know the sight words um so what Alice and I have done is looked at how can we make it sequential how can we make it decodable and how can we make it multi-sensory and a um sorry I lost my spot and a lot of this is still practicing those high frequency words but in the how can we decode um we've been we work with students on segmenting sounds you saw a little bit of that in the video with my students and then thinking about what letter identifies to this sound and then how can we blend sounds together to breed and so that is where we are able to pull in text and kind of get phonics and phonological awareness during our guided reading time we're about to watch a quick video of Miss Beckner teaching guided reading and her students will go through their high frequency words and it's amazing to see them decode them and then they will show you how they can decode a word to encode it which is writing it down foreign so these are our high frequency words words that we see all the times in our disposable okay what's this word damn let's check it um yep the next one is that's the heart word is it a couple more see this one this is the Heart part that e e e c two more dad and this one it's it's good reading so now we are going to do some tacking mapping spelling okay I'm gonna give you a marker put your lid on your marker and get ready to listen here we go all right the first word that we're gonna tap don't start writing yet the first word that we're going to tap is the word Bud say it but let's tap it uh how many fans three three so draw three lines but a d three lines now we're gonna spell it right say Bud again what letter spells buff excellent Bud oh that's a d can you flip it around for me okay what's the next sound in Bud say it again bud but uh uh what letter says uh you you that is correct that is correct and then we have one sound left Bud uh d d [Music] exactly so this is what you should have I know those B's and D's can get tricky those B's and B's can get tricky can they Max can you turn around that b after we thought our job is to check it so we're gonna say the sounds we're gonna Point watch me we're gonna go one two three and then blend it back together okay ready say the sound touch your first letter go boom uh but did we get it kiss your brain kiss your brains all right can you stop it I just turned around and told Dana like I'm so proud of these kids and it's like these aren't even my kids that are my best readers these are my we call them our bubble kids where they have really great really great foundations but you could see how proud they are of themselves and then the next piece is we're reading we're reading we're putting those words in those skills into books and it's just we're at that point of the Year where we're like it's working it's paying off and it's better than ever before so with that um we can kind of see our data here um as of December nope this would be sorry um quarter 30 and a quarter three we have 72 growth in Reading CBC words as measured by your CVC list which is our words like cat Rod where you have a consonant vowel consonant and we also have um as of December in our NWA map Reading assessment 60 of kindergarten students were proficient in word recognition which is a big deal as we were only halfway through the year our next steps as I said previously would be looking towards how can we align K2 to make the phonological pattern fluent from what they know in kindergarten all the way up to second grade and how can we merge those with our multi-century approach and with our current reading series hmh um we are exploring more phonics sequentially aligned text to use during guided reading some more books that kind of match those patterns it's hard to find them as this is a big shift everyone seems to be undergoing right now but we're confident we will find more resources and if that's any the best way to fit high frequency words into the scope and sequence of just making sure we're putting words in front of students that they can read and that we are not just expecting them to memorize thank you questions I noticed they gave the mic back to you for the questions I'm not sure how to take that they have the answers but hey I have a silly one you did you did this like kissing sound and it goes from here to here what what was that kissing a brain because they did such a good job they were kissing their brains yeah it was a little something okay thank you okay no problem no problem it's a feel-good I'm interested in I think you mentioned that you had focused a little bit on particular best practice in a professional development day maybe one two three professional development days in a row or we took a couple I'm sorry how far back does it go so this year in two of our professional development days that we had through bcsc in our afternoon breakout sessions we we took the kindergarten through third grade teachers and and their uh other staff members that are instructionally involved and we worked with them on that and we took the fourth fifth and sixth grade teachers down to another breakout session and actually worked on uh vocabulary and building background and things like that so we've got another professional development day coming up what what will be the focuses this time we'll be at North High School oh okay a little bit different social emotion okay thank you different take this time yeah I appreciate the attention to measures that you put into the presentation I heard uh tracking I read scores um and then I think there were two different measures where we saw significant Improvement um 30 percent increase for this and a 72 percent increase yeah thank you phonological awareness and then scores on the nwea What Would We compare those two what what would these measures have been like two years ago before we started this initiative well we we met with our grade levels today in data meetings and we were looking at some of that not necessarily that but some of that and I believe if I'm not mistaken they were better than last year I can't remember two years back but they were better than last year and and as it shows up here they were improved from August or September to December and then the third quarter as well but they were better than last year you want to say something well and prior to nwea we did have Dibbles as one of our measures that is measures our phonemic awareness and our phonics piece as well so sorry aren't you going to help me here um so that was one of our measures that we would use along with other measures within the reading adopted series but the nwea gives a much better I think idea of how they are doing as far as the phonological awareness and the phonics pieces and then I'm sorry one last Sorry Miss Wilson one last question I'm guessing that your continuous Improvement Council focuses on this in a little bit in each of their meetings or are they helping you track this at this point they are not we we have a school guiding team that is a different group of teachers that we meet with and talk with that we put together and of course our continuous Improvement Council hears about things but but they're not always involved in different things that go on this was actually rsgt that was working on this it's one representative from each grade level that's involved in that similar to the cic but but not the same group say the name of that one again I'm less familiar with that the school guiding team thank you they work they work a lot with instruction and learning and curriculum and learning Sergeant um one thing you were talking about the PD days and stuff and what we've done in the past and what we're doing going forward as far as I am aware we do get Although our next PD is going to be at North around social emotional Wellness we are going to have the afternoons where kindergarten teachers from across the district are going to be grouped together first grade teachers from across the district are going to be grouped together and that is something that we are so excited about because it hardly ever happens and we're not the only people doing this so we're just really excited to say um thanks for your help on this what's happening with this so we're really looking forward to that to continue as well I do have to back up and say though Mr Center answer to your question before the PDS took place we did speak with the cic and would they helped develop what we would do with each breakout session in the afternoon so yes they were aware and they did decide on that so there thank you I appreciate the answers thank you real quick if I can piggyback off that because what I like what you just said first off thank you for doing the positive reinforcement I don't think I give my team cookies at work I don't know that the kiss the brain would I think I'll get laughed out of the building but it's it's every kid responds to something different it looks like you've got them to respond positively to that so great job with that the last piece that you just said is what I like to hear the cross-pollination of ideas and not just ideas but good ideas so I'm a little curious as to you your team uses this tool I would assume there might be differences in tools at different schools so I'd be really curious to see what historical data shows for performance at schools the different elementary schools along with how your performance has improved by using this tool and if this tool is superior to others may not work at every school but which schools would it work at and how you might be considered experts for the use of this and train your peers in some way so I guess I'll look over here in the back if there's a way Dr hack that we could maybe look at performance of this I know we're looking at a lot of math material coming up as well but in this case if we've got something that really works thank you I have a small question is it any way that you can send this home where parents can also help with their kids do you do that Reach Out and ask how can I help my student with their sight words and I said well first we need to know our letters and sounds so we can read and then we can work on those CVC words and what I did was I copied off some of our hegarty which is the phonological awareness pieces and decodable books and said you know this book only uses the letters a m I guess S2 because it's like I am Sam and just practicing like that in a sequential way and I set those home and that parent has relayed back that it was super helpful rather than sitting there with flashcard she actually has two boys in kindergarten so rather than doing flash cards being able to sit down and have the same lesson going on at home and reinforcing them how to do things and not just um memorizing it thank you I give more down there sure Dale um but first of all to follow up on that I know sometimes with new curriculum there's parent nights where parents come in and actually get to maybe do what the kids do or see it have you done any of that or is that something you might do to to re-teach parents how to help their kids I guess again we were just having those same conversations in our data meetings today so I I can't say as a school as a whole we have not done that but I believe some of our grade levels are thinking about doing some of those things and we may as well as a school and I got two other quick questions so phonological awareness is a new word for me tonight I'm going to try to use it in in conversation over the next week we'll see if it fits but remember is is it a I'm assuming it's a sub score from the nwea okay um and you might have said this but so you're doing this in kindergarten or first and second doing at the same time or is it kindergarten first year this year first grade next year currently we work on phonological awareness phonics all that in kindergarten first and second grade what they are doing being more intentional and and working with a certain skill or a certain Blend or whatever is just kindergarten right now we would like to be K one two we've made a little bit of background work these ladies ladies have um working with their first grade peers and second grade peers on realigning those hundred words that they were talking about so they have done that with kindergarten first grade has done that with with first grade and second grade has to but that work came kind of a little bit towards the middle of the year so they're waiting to start to implement that next year where they can be more intentional with the words that they're introducing along with the score stories and and things like that so we're we're moving in the right direction fairly appreciate the videos that really helped to see it in action we wish we could bring kids with us tonight but we figured since you know the this is the next best but I love the idea of sharing those videos with parents too many other questions before you step away just a one question not related to the presentation but thank you for the presentation ladies um also nicely did you just move into some new classrooms so how was that we were in the gym for those of those that don't know Parks I just went under our kindergarten we just moved into our new classrooms the whole building is being renovated and we were in the gymnasium for an undisclosed amount of days um we made it work because we knew that there was a wonderful um end result and our first Monday in our new rooms I had writing time with music on and my kids are all focused and I almost my dramatic self almost had tears because I was like this is how it's supposed to be but it's incredible like it it allows all of us to collaborate and work as a team and to use our support staff and to be able to pull kids into our small group rooms and be able to see them through the glass and have our common spaces and I'll let you see students reported back two we did like my new classroom and there was a lot of feedback of my new classroom was quiet my new classroom was beautiful my new classroom helps me so it was really exciting and I agree that the students are really excited about our common space where we can actually fit all of our about 100 kindergartners in there at a time and they really enjoyed that either academically or through play they love the new space thank you again for the presentation thank you for your patience in the gymnasium that had to be a little challenging we're glad you're in a new space now thank you for the time sorry if we took a little long great topic thanks [Applause] hello everyone my name is Laura usley I'm the udl facilitator at Central Northside and McDowell my teammates will introduce themselves when it's their turns to speak I'm here to present to you tonight about the secondary math adoption so for our committee members Corey Williams is my counterpart at the high schools and at McDowell and she and I work closely with Brittany Coomer our coordinator for instructional technology because we know that we want to ensure that whatever we even look at would be something that would fit with our current techno or current infrastructure that Brady can help us like muddle through the I'm sorry I'm stuttering I'm a little bit nervous that the infrastructure for technology that we currently have so right away we included the department chair so we have Mr Branham and Mr Vogel from Columbus North and Columbus East and then we talked to them and we we know we knew that we wanted to make sure that we included a variety of Math teachers all grade levels both required classes and classes that are maybe accelerated High ability teachers and not so we just really wanted to make sure that we were selective about our committee we wanted a special ed representative we just really wanted as many eyes looking at the potential materials as possible so our goals for this year so we started out we wanted to reflect on what we currently use so we took a look at the resources we're currently using and we wanted to prioritize what we considered our significant areas of need um we wanted to make sure that when we selected resources we were being sure to be intentional about including resources that implement the eight highly effective teaching practices from the National Council of teachers of math we wanted to make sure that we evaluated a wide range of resources not just looking at a few or not just looking at maybe just the most popular we wanted to look at a wide range and finally we wanted to make sure that we selected resources that really fit our non-negotiables and that will truly enable our our students to achieve success in mathematics courses I almost said our children because all of us on the committee also have students who are currently in bcsc from elementary through High School in math classes so we really wanted to make sure that we were intentional about selecting the best possible resources and I'm going to hand it off to Corey um and like Laura said I'm Corey Williams I'm the udl facilitator for Northeast and then we split McDowell um so our timeline this started last May pretty much when we wrapped up social studies about a year ago we hit the round running again and got going with math and so Laura and I met with our department chairs um and Mr Jensen to kind of begin planning this process throughout the fall we had our vendor presentations we utilized a lot of the time on PD days so we didn't have to pull teachers and have subs for that which was the first time we were able to use those days for this process so that was pretty fantastic and we had vendor presentations and there is a rubric they are linked for you if you want to see how we evaluated it but it is a rubric we've been using for the last several years and then we tweak it and make it subject area specific each year and then January and February we had our kind of one two some subjects three top choices and we worked with for our second year in a row spin bridge and our representative there Charles did a fantastic job with our vendor negotiations and got our quotes back to us we were able to have our course feed calculations and final decisions made right before we left for spring break so kind of nice to have that that done before we left these were the vendors that we looked at and these came from where a year behind with the rest of the state in terms of adopting and so the math Caravans were last year so we were able to get a good list from those math Caravans last year um from Ed reports which you'll hear about later from nctm and from teacher requests so we asked the teachers what vendors you want to see what have you heard great things about and this was the list they came up with so these were all of the vendors that we then reached out to requested materials from and then had presentations from and before we kind of then get into our selections we just wanted to say the state standards are our curriculum for all of our our courses and so what we're seeking approval for is new resources that will help us support the implementation of these standards so first up with our choices I'm presenting for new tech tonight they don't have a department chairs Zach Schroeder their teacher did a fantastic job representing their choices on our committee um but isn't here with us tonight so these are the CSA new tech selections so for algebra geometry and Algebra 2 which you'll hear later kind of the core high school math classes they selected hmh into math and you're going to hear later that this aligns with Central's selections um so the CSA Central students will then use the same series when they get into high school so there is that vertical alignment for those students for their pre-calculus and calculus it's also hmh um and then they don't currently offer probability and statistics or finite but they do plan to offer those courses so they wanted to go ahead and include those Selections in this for approval and so those are their selections a couple of notes that Zach did pass along um part of the kind of justification for why they picked hmh especially for those core math classes is with their problem-based approach they don't necessarily teach the standards in order they're going to teach them within their their projects the problems that they're currently solving and this gives them that flexibility to be able to pull in where they need things when they need it and so they really felt that this series gave them that ability to have that flexibility that they need that's kind of unique to their pathway so those are the new tech choices and I will now pass it over to our other department chairs to share their choices good evening my name is Brad Branham I had the privilege of serving bcsc as a math department chair at Columbus North High School and also North Side Middle School um I want to start by just a huge thank you to Corey and Laura as well as the rest of our adoption committee for all their fantastic work in this process thank you to the board for giving us the opportunity to present tonight and a huge thank you to Eddie about a year ago I went to nctm Regional Conference in Indianapolis and immediately came back to Eddie we met together and we made a commitment to try to be as unified as possible in our selections tonight so without further Ado starting with North College Prep AP and dual credit we are essentially re-adopting the same curriculum materials from the previous adoption you'll see that there's increases in price for both pre-calculus and AP stats I believe that to be mostly due to the new additions as well as inflation surprisingly we have a slight decrease in AP Calculus and finite math I could only attribute that to Charles with Sprint Bridge as with some good negotiation techniques we have our largest class ever of calculus 3 this next year of 24 students and their resources come from Ball State and are paid for through the bcsc gifted and talented Grant and then our eight our standard statistics and trigonometry have opted to use current resources along with a website called stats medic which provides free effl lessons for every standard of those courses and so there will be no student fee for those two courses hi I'm Ed Vogel I'm the math department chair at East and uh at Central Middle School again I want to thank our committee they did a fantastic job I want to thank the board for taking time and I'll have to say that Mr Nowlin it's a little weird being up here with you being on that side of the desk we've done a couple of these done a couple of these together it's weird to me too it's weird to you too um like like North we're adopting really a lot of the same materials that we've really used the last six years with really two exceptions one being a different pre-calculus book by the same vendor our teachers just felt like a change was needed it's structured a little bit different but really has a lot of the same Concepts and and it uses the same type of teaching strategies and then we're also switching our AP Statistics book to Bedford Freeman and worth the practice of statistics and the reason for that is our teacher is very problem based and uses stats medic quite a bit and that book really aligns well with the use of status medic as well as being the most popular AP book for statistics um and so you can see again a lot of the fees that we have there are really in line with with uh with what North has a lot of those are actually decreases and so you know one of the things that we did is we chose books is we also wanted to be as Frugal as possible and so um you know like North we're going to continue to use the same problem stats book that we have for our semester course to try to save our students and parents money a rationale with our AP dual credit courses we feel like since we've used them they're excellent resources they have a lot of they they develop concepts with procedural fluency over time and the student engagement in those classes has been very high can you go go back one next second quite frankly the the biggest reason of us continuing to use the the resources from last adoption is the amazing amount of success that we've experienced in our AP and dual credit classes we currently have 401 students enrolled in AP or dual credit math classes with very high passing rates our cnhs Indiana Math League team placed second in the state of Indiana for the past two years second only to Penn High School and above very high performing schools such as Hamilton Southeastern Fishers Cathedral West Lafayette right next to Purdue Bloomington South and many others uh moving forward for our course classes for both East and North we are excited to announce that we will be going with imagine learning from illustrative math even though this is a new curriculum you can see that there's modest increases in price for both Algebra 1 and geometry and even a slight decrease in price for algebra 2.
