I think it really would have 80 tires on it or something so anyway so just to keep on so I have this time of year is reflective for me because I have to look back and see where we were last year this time even before that so so that's just mn11 Capital uh 691 fund that's on your cash balances that's our fund that we use Mr Schultz just mentioned the 25 prod projects that are approved by school facilities board we just applied for another one today thank you Chris Sheriff maintenance director brought in 103 000 quote for putting two new 25 ton chillers on top of the high school gym that are older than I mean at least 20 years old non-functioning so the AC units are about 15 years old and the resners heaters that are on top of the gym are about 30 years old I'm trying to eliminate both of them and go with a package unit two new package units so if that's that's funded that 103 that'll really help and then we just kind of stumbled into it Mr show brought it to me about two three weeks ago and I I couldn't find the way to apply but we found this extra photo of covet gold so to speak 187 million dollars and try to get our hands on 653 000 of it and if that would be 510 000 for curriculum that I put in for if that comes I'm going to start just kind of breathing again life will be good I won't need an oxygen supplied oxygen but things are just out of this world for prices uh and we mentioned the 100 or the 97 000 for the school lunch we have again really high hopes that at the end of the year if Pronghorn is finished with the featured the workforce housing units the 500 000 we spend them because we have to cash flow them when they have bills we have to pay them but then the county Grant if that's approved now which it is and that comes back in that's kind of a net zero for us if it's all done by the end of the year so we have 930 000 from Kansas State Bank a third party Finance lease purchased and 500 000 here uh from the county so if that's all done then we have it at zero but Capital cash is is getting tight too so and then we take a quick look at our at our uh overall cash and we see overall cash is hanging in there at 5.9 million at the end of March and again that's in several different places but we still don't know what next year's budget numbers are going to be yeah certain factors last year we're getting in the 21 year it's going to be the 22 year we were getting 4 400 for students the 23 year just ended we went from Forty Four Hundred to forty seven hundred three hundred and thirty dollars if they can maintain an eight percent increase again that'll be nice but we won't know that until at least Jim one year they didn't even tell us that until July so that's that's all I have any questions for the month of March have you heard anything from the state as far as which way they're leaning are we looking at possibly 88 we know that by Statute and they've honored that it's at least two percent per student which in this case if it's 47.70 it's 95.50 and 40 cents that's the minimum they're you know this will be an interesting budget cycle because it's the I you know since I think uh Governor Napolitano the last time we had um a um basically our governor and our legislature are opposite parties and so in order to get business done there needs to be some kind of compromise and so we'll see I you know I I met with our lobbyists last week uh there it's kind of been quiet on the budget side they both have their budget priorities and they've thrown out there but you know put out their budgets for people to see but it'll it's going to be interesting time to see what they actually come up with and um I know they want to go home they want to go on vacation eventually so we'll see what what that does all right we shall wait and see the really good news is that the state economy is so tremendously must be on steroids because the money that comes in from that six tenths of one percent that we give to teachers only the classroom has almost a million dollars in it right now 957 000. that's just based on a percent of sales tax that's tremendously better than it's been for the last several years our plan is to come up come up with a come to you in May with a plan on how to spend that um and 100 of that money goes to teachers and this year uh teachers got 11 000 and our proposal next year will be 13.
yeah well with the higher level definitely yes yes yes and the feedback has been positive um we're still even finding things within the resource um that teachers didn't realize there was before and now they're using and they love yeah um Big Ideas is also really great about if we're needing something they're really responsive about getting it to us okay this is just mental supported it's just Middle School yes yes there has to be always a downside to something um sometimes they're like the so what we found is it's great for that like basic knowledge like introducing lessons and even some of those higher level thinking questions they're in there but we have had to find some more higher level thinking questions elsewhere but along as a whole department or consensus has been it's easier to find those than to have to tailor a daily lesson like basically simplify it for all of our students and then build from there so we'd prefer to have something that has the foundations plus some of those extras and then if we need to find some other materials that are higher level for our high like more achieving students we can go ahead and find those easily thank you all right okay can I please have a motion to approve the adoption of Big Ideas Math as math curriculum resource with big Helen Middle School on first reading motion second Joe and Ash yes held smart Health curriculum needs to discuss the schedule for the superintendent evaluation for Mr Gold so the following timeline may be utilized for I just so I just threw this timeline in here for discussion and this is going to be done through that new program and I was what I would do is I was thinking by May 1st I'll get it my selfie valve submitted and then I'll send all of you login information so you can see everything and then you would have the month of May to uh you go in there and it'll all have directions for you on how to go in and just basically complete one yourself and then I just threw this out it's up to you I uh June 12th we have a board meeting um I think this process is going to be a lot easier with the new program we're using because it's all going to consolidate together I if you if you want you could just after June 12's meeting you could convene closed session and Hammer it out rather than schedule a special meeting but if you want to schedule a special meeting do that too I just threw it out here as a suggestion and at the end by the end of the month Kevin and I would just sit down and review it what do you guys think and we're good with meeting after a board meeting yes I'm fine yeah yeah is everybody good Doug yeah Gary 's good one Gary's good with it all right um so it'll be our timeline very good Melissa thank you you can answer for Gary the next Wrigley schedule and Doug congratulations yes congrats thank you and then can I please have a motion to adjourn okay all in favor aye any opposed
and obviously that's what it used I mean those buildings were built Sharp Creek North Hills at Sharp Creek Metro North was fountain in Southwood originally were all for K kindergarten through sixth grade so it's not any difference as far as the age range now I'm being Pre-K obviously I guess one more year because we have three girls too um yeah so along as long as if you put a wing on the Northfield let's say and tie into those facilities but again it's all contained in a wing so to speak is there a downside of that versus having everything just to be very open I think what we've heard before when we were talking about when we were looking at the referendum and building a new high school you know there were those concerns about pre-k through eighth grade for example and so I think it would be more of a a concern of parents Community possibility of even though they would be separated just like we did with the sixth grade itself development or Southwest Elementary to go to the Junior Senior High even though they would be separated even though there's schools out there that are pre-k through 12.
still moved by Dr Jenkins second second by Miss Amaral on the motion any discussion chair hearing then all in favor aye aye opposed abstentions abstention okay Miss Coughlin will abstain the executive session minutes of the same date March 27 2023.
[Music] here we go and right in to the stick it goes for Ally Thompson another draw control win [Music] all right from down low Addy Jordan cutting through opening up come on Mark [Music] s East Longmeadow picks up the draw moves it up the left-hand side Jordan was open why why little picked up can't tell who has that there there's Calabrese who has it sort of has it drops it here come the bombers coming up the left hand side trying to get in the way of this three people surrounding the Westfield bomber they're moving it from the left to the right they get it over there looks like they're going to get it into the offensive zone and they do sling back on defense [Music] another save Jenna Holly good look there by Westfield passes it out good solid safe pass there East Longmeadow in transition ball goes up to Hattie Jordan Addie Jordan has it she's gonna do a face Dodge and fire low save Westfield [Music] good pass there this is a fast action going on here great play on defense there to knock it out of bounds saw that pass coming intercepted it great play by test and all good anticipation of the pass and transition got in front of it ball goes out of bounds except not sure she did the right thing there she just forgot to bring the ball in bounds before she passed it stinks that happened she'll learn from that but she does she earned the right I mean she made the great play over there in order to get the turnover in the first place Nissan Meadow still applying the pressure number three Carolina casing here we go looking to dodge looking to dodge good slide there oh I don't know I think that was a good slide there by Kenna Marino not sure that one was a penalty but it's going to get called anyway and give it a free position to the bombers not the best of angles mourinho's fast I expect her to get in there and do something to interrupt this shot she does but she jumps through the middle a really good eight meter shot right there good deception the ball goes in the back of the net goal Westfield bombers five minutes and 45 seconds Remain the score is at 10.
uh we have a situation which there's no dedicated activity buses in this District so all your yellow buses on routes have to be in that shape to run activities when you run activities usually the better route buses come off and that spare buses go into the routes and so I don't know as a certain level of having at least enough of your Fleet that you don't get caught and I will tell you right now we're doing one route with two small vehicles through the bus drivers we could have a little bus driver to put her out but we have two small vehicles to do it now because we don't have another bus driver to run the proud and if we did that then put a little bit more pressure on our Fleet also so and I'll build any questions that you may have thought I might know I was asked my lease purchase down the road on this program it's not affected because we have to purchase it to get the 25 grant but I was asked about lease purchase on buses you know you have options on buses these purchases uh you pay three to five years you're paying depreciation fee and then in three years you give it up and start all over with another new bus it does keep you baby for repair costs uh but that is what people go three to five years on these purchases of buses also and there are some schools that actually have transportation companies provide all their blessing Duro it's in this area like first students in Wichita Area I'm not sure what Kansas City they don't they provide everything I will tell you that's go-cost sayings from around here I will tell you probably the most efficient if you own your own buses have good shape at the end of the day your cost per mile would probably be less when you own them and take care of them if you both Lisa and or have a company take care of them if you have your own it's good if you've never owned your own you're never going to own your own because it's going to take too much money to get started into a fleet you'll always do what you've been doing if you using a company or if you are at least also be asked about out of next year account while they really the cash balance at the end of this year will be represented uh purchase this year but in reality through the Council of purchase order the check won't be written until but we receive it if we if it's approved it probably won't come in now to like October for lucky that's when with the cash balance that did this year will be accurate because it'll be on a council to purchase order that question is the price of the party with the craft technology that's how much 25 right at uh 35 623 is what the a little over 35 000. 71 passenger bus two thousand dollars a city don't go buy one of those new white activity buses about 450 pounds the net cost is 106.
wow so um that will that should it's not going to drain it no it's not we want something that we can sustain over time and everything else but it's something that's um on the classroom site fun side that we can maintain and get money into teachers hands all right any other questions or comments on this financial report nope thank you um how about Student Activity report Mr Livingston Student Activity I'm going to say is working very well because we have many folks and Miss wolf let's hear a minute ago yeah if if it wasn't going well miss wolf would miss would be in our office so it would be I say going very well in the student council and someone asked me yesterday if I wanted to be an I thought of course um if I wanted to be the disc jockey that maybe was it the junior pro what's the dancer having the problem yeah and I thought I thought you would probably know all the singers and the songs that these kids would like but I didn't ask you so you know it's not Johnny Cash so so we don't have too many upset visits from Wolf so I think it's going very far D'Angelo might have a different story because she's very busy but student council dentist thank you I don't know I think he might make a really good DJ it's just a thought I'm happy I I do I think your thought might be misguided all right item seven a through K is our consent agenda we can make a motion for the approval of the consent agenda a second please all in favor I all right we have pulled item eight a the farm manager contract item 8B is to dissolve four pair professional positions and to add to teacher positions hello Dr Burdette hello so um every year we review what our caseloads are going to be what the programs are going to look like and after a very careful review some of our programs have grown and others have gotten smaller and so we've noticed that we need another teacher a territorial for resource and we need another we need to split our extended resource at Del Rio but in order to do that um I had to think of how to pay for it and so when I looked at all the programs there were it kind of worked out there were some that got quite a bit smaller so I could dissolve four parapro positions that were already gone anyway I'm not taking people's jobs away um they're actually going to the new autism program so those positions we would have had to hire for but now we don't have to if we can dissolve those four positions and then that pays for two teacher positions to help with the caseloads and the teaching and all of that so does that make sense yes okay so it would be a wash it wouldn't cost any extra money to do this and it wouldn't take anyone's jobs away that was my main concern yeah and so I would just like to propose that if we could please do that and to add a position at Del Rio for an extended resource and a position at territorial for a resource position for special ed any questions okay I'll make a motion to add an extended resource position at Del Rio and the resource positions at Tech to be paid for by dissolving for professional positions thanks so much item 8C is the certified employee stipend so um last month you all approved a plan to try to pay for coverage of of um preps for our secondary teachers um after and I appreciate the approval and and I it's on me that we probably shouldn't have taken it to you um we don't think well two things we don't think we can get the staff to fully staff it and the second thing is we don't know if it could be sustainable year after year and I don't want to do something and then have to take it back a year later but what I'd like to propose and this is something that we we and we being um Mr Livingston and um uh and Cindy and I have have wrangled for quite a while um that we think that we can afford a one-time stipend to go to teachers that are returning so this would be for existing staff to sign their contract and come back in the fall um four thousand dollars um that would just be promised for one year only would be an additional stipend to their contract so a separate's not on their base contract be a completely separate contract to make it clear that this is a one-time only um thing and that um we believe that that that is doable and really what they um we think that the net effect would be is that most of that would come from [Music] I call it very fluid um we're hoping that most of that comes from our Esser and by moving existing mnl into Esser it would free up mno to pay for these positions um we're talking 100 right now we're talking a hundred and I thought the number was in here 119 staff members um that would be likely going down as we get um you know we anticipate a few more resignations contracts aren't due until April 20th so that would go down a little bit as as people um don't fail to turn in their contracts um we only have a very few we don't have a ton ton left out so that would be pretty close and um in addition to that we also would have some other funds that we could tap into if we needed to to comfortably get to this number again the goal is to get money into teachers hands this is one way to do that and again it's only committing us for a year not committing us longer than that if we go next year at this time if we're if we can afford it we can do it but if not we choose not to the other concern is um and I know that that this is a lot of our calculations all over the place that all the calculations we do are based on our stable enrollment as we have now if enrollment goes down we'll have to adjust anyway no matter whether we do this or not we'd have to adjust um if our enrollment goes down I don't anticipate that our enrollment went up last year I really think that we're at a minimum will be a flat enrollment I have a question yes um is there some type of stipulation like what if they sign and then like like school starts and they're like oh baby so this is actually paid over four pays okay along with our classroom site fund so the first pay is kind of after the fact so the first pay they wouldn't get until the end of the first quarter okay second at Christmas the third at Spring break and the fourth at the end of the year and that's when our classroom site fund payments are made okay okay right um so when we you know we also have a we have a stipulation in their contract that says that we can and I can't remember I don't know if if how much is it seven fifty so we can pull get some money out of their contract I think it's more than 750.
I think there still are concerns about okay they're going to be with the high school and I'm not saying the education that changes anything but I think that's more of a public relations I mean that's one of those things that might be one of those things that could be a somewhat in that like even you know as much as we would want to say that they'd be separated all those things it's still those students would be in a building um with older students that would be I believe probably the biggest downside and it doesn't necessarily happen to me but I think it would be through fifth grade at Metro North I mean there should not be anything because that's what the building used to be I mean I know it's not Pre-K three-year-olds but it was K through six when it started just like Sharp Creek so and if you move sixth grade out there are some you know just like right now sixth grade for Southwood was a great for some different things for some of the Fine Arts and things like that so they actually have their own regular room now Norfolk is a little bit different because right now Shark Creek is right there so they can just walk across the parking lot but that wasn't true for Southwest Elementary so they did not do that so there are advantages that way too to have a sixth grade with them they must have an opinions I just I vote you know with Logistics and transportation all those type of things that's why I've always kind of leaned towards something staying there at Northfield instead of moving three grades back you know because you're already everything else always happens at the Northfield and so it just seems like there's a lot of just moving back and forth so but you know it's one of those things what's what's best what's best for the teachers this is more as your advantage to having older kids in with a little bit I think they're I think we could Pro and bond this way okay like they're definitely some advantages having older kids they serve as Role Models they can assist with I don't want to say with Transportation you know like bus buddies and things um endurance we can make little cons to go with that as well so this older kids fifth graders to read to the schools there's a lot of things you can do academically that's some of the things that we talked about too when we talked about the referendum when we were in that pre-k through eighth grade how that could have been really good too and I think people understood that and looking at other options of what other schools do too so but you're right I mean it's you have to wait both both situations understand the situation about that but also under you know as far as having them all right there but on the other situation what is that public perception of that because that certainly was one of the big things that we heard about when we were looking at the representation academically we put sixth grade a lot with seventh and eighth grade as far as a lot of our trainings a lot of curriculum resources and materials the flip side of that right the older the being the younger kids with the older kids has its perks too that's right because that's why I was wondering you know is there more opportunities with the fourth graders being in the same area of the sixth grade or the fifth you know what I'm saying is can they do we move up kids academically because they're because if not you put them with the you know K-5 well there's no you know fifth graders have no way to move up or can't do anything that's what I is your way you know are we gonna pull some of those kids back because we're not able to have those classes there I would say we need to do some some research in that conversation versus with the strikes where they do have this different configurations that are pre-k through five pre-k through the set more of a middle school works six seven eight Wabash is five through eight is it you know oh there's all the different configurations out there I mean there are schools that have only kindergarten too there's some schools have 600 kindergartners in this class I was like that's was we look at how it is now but we need to say how would we want to change 15 years from now and try looking at that that's a real difficult part and you can study what's around now but how do you project what you would like it what it needs to be adaptive I guess and just change it when the time comes we try to do that we try to project that next 60 years but I'm gonna work I always come back look he added on to Metro board you'd add another gym yeah you have to would that be completely separate from the other one or I mean deadly things to look at down around that would be part of there so yeah and part of that too is yeah yeah I don't think I think a Jim's in the picture no matter what facility yeah correct I mean it's Sharp Creek Metro Oregon Union to one of those three spots just because of the gyms that we have monkeys so just like Mrs Moore said you know pros and cons on each way but I think too some of it will come down to okay what's the study look like as far as you know all three of those different options and so how this is where I come back because just because of the gym because you know you've got we've talked about that so this is why I lean towards doing something at Northfield is because Southwind we're going to have to do something right in the gym space so if you have a gym you know a gym to Northfield were you going to do the same exact thing there and it's going to affect them the same way because of their Elementary situation is the same thing so in my eyes by pushing everything to that spot it kind of Keeps Us kind of the same when it comes from the functionality of you know the gym spaces and that kind of stuff but right right I mean South only has three gyms right and so you would still have three yeah it would be the same if what I'm saying is if you eliminated we added classrooms to Northfield yeah then it would be the be the same rate yeah but yes I think in the future I mean those are some things to talk about um right now though yeah so I'm just saying that the gym space is I guess for me thinking about it it's it's needed more at the high school at both high schools because of schedules for practices and all that kind of stuff rather than at the elementary because just in these cases you have kids coming from Shark Creek or even sometimes from Northfield going Metro you know the practice so we're bouncing around well it's really been an issue in my opinion down on the south south of Elementary gyms always been negative well it's basically the same as Metro yeah I mean it's the same size you know but in an ideal situation that would be improved it was is a disaster I've been through it it's but it's just one of those things that's why I'm in my eyes looking at it because you know you have to do it somewhere at the gym no matter which space well that's what I want to encourage us and I was just put ideas out there too I mean like for example I don't know what the I said the parking lots of both of those schools Saturday I guess like getting everything better yeah Frozen so The Vocational the actual increased program how do you realize would you agree in town yeah for sure so I'm not saying that we build there but in my Minds I sat there Scott and looked at the parking lots looked at everything that that would be a possibility of putting enough square footage here by removing that and putting the field houses there small field of houses to I mean if anybody's gonna have sports lately you know the necessity of something like that I'm not saying that we make all of our decisions around Sports either yeah I mean you still would have to have the classrooms for AG for some of those Tech head stuffs but you could actually have the regular classroom you know I would like this and you know I'm just present now I guess I would like to see the agriculture uh element really just done super well at the vocational school okay I mean things have changed if things have changed we'll put the bed on the shoulders that's nice exactly because as a sophomore Junior and senior you'd like to you know work your way through it especially when you consider the FFA portion of it yeah because Vocational School can't have that exactly because in all these schools yeah they'd have to be a separate chapter I haven't thought about that they don't make allowances The Vocational Equity chapter we work really hard to try to develop a community and so by not having somebody in the building it robs that Community right and so you hear about Heartland but you don't see it as a seventh or eighth grader you don't get to see that teacher and so that's why we work really hard for our AG teachers and our all of us to have sorry Christina to have to have Junior High classes right so I can meet those kids you develop the relationship and then you cultivate that stuff and it's kind of so for sure Heartland does have a lot of great offerings but that is definitely a con to taking that there because you lose kind of the culture of the community of that and mark the point of my bringing this up is just that settings that space yes as you look down the road well I'll tell you we uh we just had a Vex robotics meeting with 17 teams there's a real hope that in a if you're planning futuristic that'll be a great spot for those robotics teams those fields and stuff are huge both schools at the high school they can't fit them in the rooms we can't get them enough field space to do that and so um if we're dreaming that becomes an academic High School part where we are using that for engineering and it wouldn't necessarily need that whole space for sure but that's a pretty big footprint and Mr North you bought anything too anyway because the way the cafeteria this stuff works to get here is that recess and stuff yeah well or or a cafeteria yeah one way or the other one or the other that's why that's why I'm like okay okay you got the gym if it's left alone it was kind of match what we have in South Woods right you just need a cafeteria Southland does too really it's kind of one and all but it's just give me the elementary yeah yeah you're feeding little kids it's chaos yeah and I know maybe down the road but obviously we will need to address our athletic facilities at some point as well so when you talk about adding gym space on there's the possibility of going out further East on the East gym into the parking lot to add on gym space there yeah it's full court this way we're here or just add add extend it out and add another gym and so you can have more cores that a field house with and do that like he's talking well then I mean your field house would be a totally separate entity where the gyms would all be together if they were already attached to the Eastern part of my thought was just that square foot that that area is already sick yeah there was some parking space everywhere was that you could tie into locker room still I mean it is on that Corner that end of the area of the building I guess do a walk right between the two well again that's why it's here so that's why I you know in my eyes that's why I look at you know building classrooms I think you know just because it's easier and I think it would be better anything that would add just because those classrooms would be better utilized if it's at Shark Creek if we just renovate that or tear down sort of crazy we have the classrooms at Northfield yeah I know it's I think it's between the academics because of having able to move them up if you need to and then with Athletics you know third grade is where we start with Athletics actually um that's usually where we start is third grade school standpoint we only do fifth grade well I'm just saying I know that their volleyball and basketball those schools third fourth third and fourth is usually where the travel so that kind of stuff starts when we looked at renovation then went to Sugar Creek and now we'll put you on the record Steve your feelings on that are not real strong in that direction really correct there's a lot there to do yeah of needing to deal with and the tough part will be where do you put the students um during all that renovation because it's going to take a lot longer than just a few minutes in the summertime so so that's a consideration well when you we're briefly talking timeline here earlier and you're talking started summer of 2024 we can't have a long study no we're talking about neurons that have to be done so he got into the fall period to get business out to get started right and we were in and we did ask um so I think which meeting we have with them you know how if we work backwards if it would work and so with our timing that what we've been talking about and they said probably I mean we don't know for sure but we would have to make that decision as part of the length of the study will determine I mean be what information you want so if you want a simple design look that's going to take a little bit longer than just giving you a scope of work and saying okay we're going to add this many classrooms here or a gym here versus a drawing a simple schematic drawing that's going to take them time to lay that out Chris she has to take the chase too many direct different directions if you'd rather say okay as a boarding as a as a community we say this is the way we want to go and then go that way rather than but at the same time and be interesting oh I agree I feel like we need I for me personally that's what I would prefer to know is just kind of what an idea of the cost would be for those options um so I guess my question would be to Steve if you were making the decision you know the bill is better than we do which direction I go I wouldn't put the money for sure but uh I'm kind of torn between whether that on norfield I think the AG area is not being utilized I mean it's a big space out there where heating it or coolant and it's not being utilized for go in the shop some of those shop areas because nobody's in a lot of equipment's in there not being used so I'm alone Kevin about moving everything down an apartment would be a great and the most ahead of them um your building too you know more space there yeah that's the next conversation yeah I mean it's pulled up what coming acres is Northfield on Steve do you know stop your head see how I got it right here Northfield is on 37 Acres and that's pretty much what southbourne is too Southport high school is on 36.7 Metro North is on 24 Acres shark Creek's on 10.
so move Mr chair with the stipulation that the minutes be held into the matters under consideration are resolved motion by uh Dr Jenkins the second by Mr Oliver on the motion any discussion chair hearing that all in favor aye aye opposed motion carries unanimously great abstention abstention my fault four zero one close enough all right uh a student rep had an appointment out of school tonight so he's unable to uh to be here so we'll move on Dr Mr Kiley thank you Mr noon so we're going to welcome Mr christopholi up to the podium who's going to give us a presentation highlighting our phys Ed and health program I'm up here um discussing our Athletic program and I would be remiss if I did not mention I mean this there was quite a few of our members of our coaching staff that are standing behind me they are fantastic human beings they're great role models for our student athletes and they care more about our kids um than any than any staff members I mean they spend so much time with our student athletes uh during the season they spend so much time with them out of season they counsel them during the season out of season uh they are that that shoulder to lean on um those people that you know kids go to for advice um whether they are students here they graduate and many of them I've seen it with my own two eyes come back for for further counsel so I do like I said I want to take that opportunity to to thank what they bring to the table on a everyday basis and we're very very fortunate to have those individuals so I am here to talk about our phys Ed health and wellness program Pre-K to 12.
to two Westfield goals group number 15 Gabriella Ritter timeout call take a little break here and two I'm not anticipating a major comeback but I think both teams going to be working on some things here over the last six minutes of the game just wants to finish this game strong looks like they're gonna go farmers really feeling the loss of star flare Emma Metcalf from last year one of the top goal scorers in the League last year and Captain top goal scorer so what's the difference um is there's gotta be a good live music yeah [Music] for another year incredible Improvement year after year [Music] um and it looks like it's won again by East Longmeadow they grab it goes to Thompson Thompson to Jordan 's foreign [Music] the way to thunder and then he's like he gets there and he's like yeah we're actually going to Seattle oh my God and then they went to Seattle and they lived there down there wow number 10 Sabina mckech me in the game [Music] you're just really moving this ball around here comes mornos looking for a cutter the Cutters would look like he may have been there over to Sabina mckechney protect me moving the ball side or back to the Kasich Kasich it's another great save by the goalie that one was shot nice and hard and down low good save Westfield flying through the middle of the field Talia Weiss pushing the Westfield player out to the left looks like it's a two-on-one play good play there good play by Grace Howard doing the stick in the body making sure Westfield Claire doesn't get open good play ball rolling around rolling around picked up flipped maybe I'm not sure almost out of bounds great play there by Howard Howard swings it up the field just a little bit of a wayward pass with three minutes and 45 seconds remaining right idea just a tough pass went out of bounds thank you coach Moses running over getting another ball puts the ball back in play Westfield has it East Longmeadow three players surrounding the Westfield bomber swings it over to the right getting chased by Gabriella ellingsworth on defense causes the turnover flips it up to Anna Macarena Macarena is running down the sidelines so kind of sprinting not sure ill-advised past right there but was doing the right thing by looking for the cutter going to the goal [Music] once picked up by Ashley beak way to fight for it way to fight for it Ashley beat Grace Howard up the sidelines over to Mourinho heading down [Music] Wings it to McKechnie it kept me padded in her stick just dropped it she chases it down picks it up picks it up stays with it still staying with it out about a tough call right there I'm not sure about that one the Techni was really fighting hard for that ball Reno wax at it when Kasich all over it macarini chasing the goalie swings it over to the left here we go again that's the way to do it that's the way to take it that's the way got it back good for her way to fight for it Ally Thompson in a field full of people [Music] well it would only be fitting for Thompson to put this one in the back of the net tonight [Music] Otto up 10-2 Thompson on an eight meter a little bit off to the side looking for a left-handed shot as she speeds in she fires it and it hits the house it's picked up it's fired again in three saves back to back to back by the Westfield goalie spectacular saves Macarena wung it down not sure it was texting down there are you kidding me tough call fans weren't happy with it I think if the game were closer they would have erupted on that call there you go almost here we go getting chased Anna Marino firing through ball in the middle and here comes Westfield they're gonna Sprint it down the side Thompson pauses yeah another almost turnover Westfield picks it up swings it in twice chasing ball coming through oh and oh [Applause] he puts the stick up and says please put it in here and they do it makes a great sale Westfield has the ball 30 seconds left really trying to set up that one more shot and a nice good hard push there by Grace Howard from the outside no penalty called there play on The Ref say Westfield swings it to the right not a lot of time left 10 seconds they swing it up just throw it in the middle well Thompson picks it up off the ground swings it up the numbers let's go
868. but we would pay for it all and they give a check back and they'll be cancel that exactly they do that as always I got to make sure you spend yours yeah yeah that's just like yes sir it's all anytime you're working with a federal program or state program so it's always reimbursing your time that is can we get rid of any bus before the time is up oh yeah okay yeah you know and that's there's different ways I mean we talked about purple wave we talked about foreign we're getting rid of we have to destroy right that's a part of the grant we have to actually destroy that for us and we get the better price yeah it's what I'd like to kind of go somehow and destroy it I don't know how difficult that's going to be to get and you can say let's run it tell us why the motors out destroy the math one that's the reason they're making the destroy because there any other questions on the different there's an immersion second key Chad all those in favor say aye any opposed same time okay ASB membership so we have invoices for ksab membership next year and also the legal assistance but as you can tell uh there's an increase in both of those use the legal assistance quite a bit okay foreign [Music] yeah you have the letter the front of you that is Traders sick question thank you Mr Larry Wood so let's say a bridge repair going all out of replacement and the buses run between Wilson flat transporting what's that going to do in the route time and Etc but I talked to the head of Rhodes and bridges there in Ellsworth but I asked him what's the official DeTour for a bus route it had anything to say right in that right then they said well maybe we'll be done in August which I don't think that's going to come close because I don't think baby has a contractor yet so I told her I'd like to reach back out and in August see what the official recommended probably be I know there's a couple options I also know that we're talking crap several miles of gravel on some of those options so I won't tell you the way to the track meet we're going to go to I believe we're going to Ellsworth yeah to go to the track meet next week contract so please run across next year transports to the back and forth that may or may not be the right I don't know the exact I don't know all the routes yet I don't know that there's a paid uh solution whether you go One Direction or the other to cross the river I don't know all the categories that might be paint I would prefer paint we I mean we could run we've run gravel roads all the time uh electronic our activities here we've got them pre-loaded to stay on pavement going to like a track meet the route because we've run these buses on gravel titles there's a good Gravel Road and wide enough I wouldn't have a problem with it I don't know what kind of bridges we have on either side of that either so that well at a time yes I would assume considerable I'm probably yeah if it's a bus at all that time I don't know if it'd be more than 10 15.
I can't remember the exact amount yeah I thought it was so if they break their contract we they have to pay us two thousand dollars okay okay yeah and this is just for so it's actually for all certified staff so that would include our therapists okay instructional coaches our um trying to think uh counselors deans of students those that are working on the the teacher salary schedule okay now the the motion does say 5000 but that needs to make sure that that's four thousand yes please so so the the total amount is going to change or no that so that total amount is based on four thousand so number one if I oh I'm sorry if I made just real quick Mr Livingston thank you for changing it I had horrible thoughts at two o'clock in the morning for the past month so that's awesome um the 576 is that let me be very very clear I want to give our teachers absolutely as much as we can possibly give them I want to give them more than we can possibly give them is that 576 000 going to be a detriment to anything else that we're doing is it needed elsewhere it's 476.
five and then Southwest on 22 Acres or employee observation strategy was I was thankful for the people that sat here before us that had the vision to get as much ground as they did yeah I mean we have something to work with both of those sites foreign so our recommendation would be to go ahead and start talking with um Bart Co and why again just to start putting out some you know some drawings some different things and US starting to look at what it would look like at Northfield what it looked like at Metro North what it looked like even at Shark Creek yeah just to know how much you know are we going to be okay with you know what lunch is are we going to be okay with all the specials so yeah go ahead no I was just like saying I mean like yeah I guess the schedule out if you put the third through fifth there can we generalize or this our existing space or do we have to add a cafeteria you know and obvious you know are we going to put it are we going to have a principle for that area you know we have to have office space you have to have you know another Insurance you know I that's kind of stuff that would be nice to kind of that's why we need to have these people be able to be able to help us with that so strong I mean basically I envisioned I think if that building needs to be if it needs to be attached or or if it does you know I don't know you know if we can't support all of those extra three grades you know through the cafeteria through the gym through the bands require you know through those extras you know rooms and specials then you know it doesn't even need to be attached really it just needs to be standing alone a standalone building you're on Metro North or Northfield when you're talking about it's nice to have common food service it would and I and I would think that just because of what it used to handle you know when we were there versus what it's handling now it should be able to handle that but I mean you got the help that sort of that Sharp Creek that you can just move over to support that staff so the only issue might run into is scheduling because the high school kind of already has a schedule and so it might be hard to find you might have to have an extra lunch schedule or something like that which just that's just a timing thing yeah in all those schedules I mean all the schedules with all the specials the question and the interest if that were to happen or not there would be a totally separate entrance in my mind and separate small offices and everything it would just be that's what I would think I mean yeah you could link it to the building but the main functionality is by itself but you're still there you know of course some of those other services the advantage that why dance have to offers are more of a refined number yes okay and they'll be able to break down a lot more of those costs they're the specifics versus just saying okay like a lot of times we just get okay these this is how much these soft costs are but they don't tell you necessarily what each of those soft costs are that's the advantage have you you have talked to them and they've worked with barbacoa before we talk about this process with the CMC we talked a little bit about it when we were going through the referendum so why again it has the same thing so isn't that there's some people in our school district that work with equipment Hunter was a hunter and Barb there is one that you think I don't know that they've worked there anymore I think they both were okay that's that same spot because well Gary Leonard goes around to those he works for them and he goes to the high schools on recruits for that company but we would have to do it or if like if this proceeded then we would do an RFP for a CMC um process we would have to help with the construction so well what's Our obligation to why dance so if we start involving them then it's part of the facility cost oh I don't have a problem with Walgreens at all yeah I know it's just that's that's how embarco can help us with the RFP process too over there yeah what was the renovation figure that we had used at one time for Shark Creek 16 minutes per classroom because that principal office has a yeah thank you results Christian I'm just taking it all out and trying to way between the three or the yeah military Shark Creek and Northville um but I said you know I'll be curious you're gonna have demolition of that building Cults too and all I mean isn't there really you can't demo yeah but would you have to if you needed a space oh yeah if you needed the space would you have to have the Warriors right yeah it's too close especially if you got two Engineers there's rules but what I'm saying is you can eat it for parking space yeah intentionally yeah no no I I think oops you know I just think that relate to you that makes sense with what you guys are thinking we need to add it and if you got that much in that boat and Steve doesn't like it record we went through it and there's definitely problems there and those problems can be rectified it's just yeah again it's about costs too I'd like to sit like you're talking I want to see the calls I mean I think we've got to look at all three angles and then International I mean because I I guess if you're starting new classroom space I don't think I don't know it's going to be different from one space to the other oh right I mean because again I don't see Metro's cafeteria handling it handling that those kids as easy as Norfolk would you know so what I'm saying is I think that it doesn't matter I think if they give it a semestinal class classroom space the dollar amount it's going to be it's going to be compared up there or if they put it here it kind of depends on your main entrances and things like that too like if you have separate if you separate some of those things out that obviously going to add some costs compared to Metro north where I have some places where you could add on pretty easily and still have the same interests way so let me talk about parking I mean you're looking better over ordering almost important and stuff yeah I mean you're not going to force all the all the through that one maybe with that burden I mean drop off we have to well we have to yeah we have to put that other parts am I say anything like that so um it used to be like that though so I mean it's not it wouldn't be that much different necessarily that'd be really a number of students would be probably the same because when we were talking about three four-year-olds right those sections aren't as large and so it would still be like a k-6 building compared to pre-k there's a Pre-K in the that would be more like one class not quite but when did this change when the parents drop off kids everybody was the best yeah [Music] I just weren't curious when when that or why it changed maybe that's why we're still here we were high scores [Music] as a bus driver and I'd seen him open up the back back door rip a kit out throw him in the side ditch and say you stay here your parents will be captured and I'm like everybody else the rest of it one time it only took one time because the rest of the year because it wasn't a feat okay [Music] [Applause] oh yeah we need lots before I mean so do we need to give it any specific answers or wait for numbers we just kind of need to know what your thoughts were about like [Music] we can go ahead and proceed s you've got enough information I think so yeah and you know we'll just try to see if they can expedite as soon as possible so we can get some of those answers because you're going to have to think about a lot of different things before you make a decision because once we make a decision then remove with it and it's fine when when will we know about the uh expenditures whether we're doing the tennis courts absolutely sure so he is I bring that up Chris is Barton Cove has talked about moving those of course so Saturday you know I'm wondering why is that space there the tennis court was never built next to the baseball field in Northfield I wasn't removing the tennis courts at the time but I'm wondering I'm assuming just to stay away from foul Bubbles and stuff like that I don't know I just wondered if that was why they thought and they were pricing all that they were pricing that thank you I think we told them and it wasn't just to keep it where it was they're going to do some borings at some other spots but we said mostly it's going to be at the same area um would that impact the Northfield site in here I'm just making sure we're thinking all the different directions thank you so it's nice in the sense of practice there's soccer goals used to be privilege yeah I just wanted to thank you so they were saying here um originally they're getting they're working on getting the Southwood Elementary Roofing job out as soon as possible as well as the stefest job at both high schools likely mid-april Metro North tiller out to Bid mid-april And Tennis Courts helped a bit in July and locker rooms in October and uh maybe a little bit earlier on locker rooms that was the one we asked them to kind of expedite so that we can get some costs because because November if we want to get it on the 2023 or 2024 love you so there's my earlier questions anyway so when do you first see that started um uh if it goes out to bid in October September October like I mean usually so I would imagine I don't know how long it would take but imagine if they got started in November or December they'd have it done by the end of the summer possibly for the next school year well does that disrupt the winter sports a lot regardless it's going to hit the winter sports I would assume you know at some capacity I just didn't know if you started like right after winter sports and then you got all the way until this football obviously I don't know if you have volleyball then too and yeah I mean we'll run into the start of the winners just seems like those areas are used less yeah in the spring and the fall than the winter everybody it's I don't know how much it will affect the gym areas but the whole definitely in the locker rooms because a lot of that they can be working inside the locker room which is going to impact your school day anyway the one thing we have to consider well obviously though that they wouldn't do them all at one time so they do them in probably sections yeah push out preliminary drama so if you get feedback from the ads and the principles on them the locker rooms yeah and get to that point and that would probably happen before we put them out today yeah that's because we would like the their ability to refine them and change things anything else what you guys go get those planners going here this week are we good for this I got stuck today you guys
uh the structure of our presentation there's three components to it we're going to talk about the curriculum and the activities in which we offer in the in the subjects or the topics that we cover we're going to talk about the strengths of our program and what we do well and we'll also talk about the next steps in a reflective piece areas of growth moving forward so our teacher Representatives are Rachel Lassie who is from our Middle School Mark Gaffney who was from our high school and our Lead Teacher I will be discussing the elementary school and also our unified program so this would be a little combo so overarching goals for our Pre-K to 12 program is focus on students mental physical and emotional health and well-being consistently reflect among individuals and uh teaching teams on best practices and improvements to better student learning and experience and provide a safe environment where Educators connect with kids and encourage and challenge students to take academic risks which Fosters growth as individuals so our elementary health and physical education will be first our staff is Katie Schmidt Jody Donahue Robin Mayo Peter Lavin Paul paveo Mary Beth Richardson Megan Phillips who I believe is in the back here who's been a fantastic addition to our staff and Mike Capello so the activities that we address in physical education they are not limited to but we talk about skills and lead up games for the following basketball dance lacrosse racquet games volleyball soccer football floor hockey softball track and field backyard games and then teacher created Cooperative games our health education topics which are addressed and they're from our healthy lifestyle choices curriculum our life skills which is decision making self-image communication goal setting conflict resolution and anger management nutrition substance abuse safety and Fitness our program strengths and this was a great exercise for us to really reflect on our practice is we demonstrate an appropriate behaviors which exemplify personal character traits such as confidence cooperation honesty loyalty respect and self-control we modify activities to Foster success we focus on quality not quantity and we go for a personal best approach so again not every single one of our students is tremendously athletically skilled but we do ask for them to bring their best every single day to the classroom in the class activity the next steps that we're going to explore is continue to revisit and revise the current instructional curriculum to meet the needs of our students and Society we want to update our wellness policy and build community awareness of the importance of physical and health education in our students growth and development so we really want to bang the drum on that point so for our middle school health and fiscal education I'll turn over to miss Lassie one thing that I forgot at the very beginning if we could hold questions to the very end when we conclude our presentation that would be appreciated thank you all right I am back all right uh middle school and uh health and physical education myself Rachel Lassie Christopher Nelson uh Jeff Coker Tyler Tavares Michael Cabello and Peter Lavin Mr Capello and Mr Levin uh focus more with the adopted phys ed students as we have as you know a very heavy amount of students that need those services so they share those services at the middle school for health education these are the topics that we cover we have a variety of topics the way we do things that the middle school is a little different we have trimesters so the first trimester while the weather is nice we keep everybody in phys Ed so um for that first one we are seeing students every other day which is a lot of physical activity compared to a lot of other school systems and then within the winter which really Falls during that second trimester they're about 50 phys Ed and 50 health so they get a little less physical activity with more focus in the classroom on the health education piece and then with the third trimester they come back to us for full-time phys Ed every other day which gives them a nice variety throughout throughout our curriculum electronic cigarettes Jewels which is a big one marijuana alcohol opiates and heroin healthy relationships communication skills cyber safety digital footprint body image and self-image Eating Disorders personal hygienes six dimensions of health and the three C's of decision making then the phys Ed piece where we have a variety of activities I like to think of it as we do some individual things where they can focus on their own personal fitness some small group and then also some large group activities so we have a variety of things that we do throughout the entire school year some strengths that we really take pride in is our inclusion piece we introduce what conclusion is on day one we go through that and then we implement it and we expect students to practice those strategies we had an awesome opportunity this year at a staff meeting to talk about inclusion and how we do that within our teaching space and it is actually promoted even more so inclusion throughout the entire school so some of the things that we are practicing in phys Ed we have our classroom teachers practicing um within their setting as well and we are a unified school where we have a unified basketball and unified Bocce and it's been an awesome thing that has created a really positive culture within our environment we do also do the student choice and voice a lot of the times Middle School is a very awkward stage as we all know because we've been there done that and we like to give students that option to choose what they want to do so that they can have a comfort and also be very successful and then another strong piece in health we like to empower our students we don't want to instill fear with the topics that we discuss we want to empower them with the education we want to give our students everything that they need to be well-rounded and overall healthy and if they do choose the unhealth healthy decision that they already are educated on what those potential consequences are so the hopes is that when they go out into the real world um that they they make those healthy decisions because they are choosing themselves um so we really take pride in a lot of that our next steps moving forward um is we would like to update our health curriculum to new generational challenges as post coven has created a lot of obstacles for us and technology is a huge stressor for our students and that mental and emotional health piece which can also tie in to technology stressors that is adding to the pressures that our students are facing we want to continue to bring new games and activities to the physical education curriculum that support inclusion we're going to carry that on until the end of time I like to think and then we want to provide students with a little bit more opportunity for their own physical fitness we have a great Fitness area and we just need to kind of get it a little bit more up to date with the times to be able to offer kids the proper strategies to be able to not just be able to go out and play a game but to be able to go into a gym and know what they can do Fitness wise to take care of themselves whether it's at a gym or within the comfort of their own home so we're looking to embody the whole child so that's we are actually like researching some grants for that as well to get the funds to be able to make that space a little bit more up to date and moving on to high school thank you Rachel my name is Mark Gaffney and I'm the Lead Teacher and instructional coach for the wellness Department I'm kind of Andy's associate head coach so um at the high school we have a variety of things that our students take so I'm going to just take you through what one student would do so for example um in the first year well we have um why go through my staff first do I have to hit this or I would think so okay perfect um so I introduced myself the staff consists of Scott Richards who's been here for over 20 years and Dartmouth Public School Maria Kelly who's been here 10 plus years Mike freits who's been here 20 plus years and he's also a coach in the district Nicole Simas um has been at the high school for three years she also was a student and an athlete year and Mike Capello does the Adaptive physical education piece for the school district so as I was mentioning I'm going to take you through what a student would go through in their High School Wellness education here at Dartmouth High School so the first year students all go into a wellness green class and that Wellness green class is a semester course which meets about 60 to 63 classes so we break down those 60 to 63 classes with 20 to 22 classes of Health curriculum and that Health curriculum for the wellness green students which are first-year students is first aid and CPR mental and emotional health which deals with anxiety and stress stress management techniques suicide Suicide Prevention nutrition personal safety and injury bullying bullying prevention and bystander education so that's a lot for 20 days but we try to do our best to get through that curriculum then they shift to either the team activities portion of the class which is 20 to 22 classes and that's just a traditional physical education class with Team activities and group activities and then when that part of the curriculum is done they shift to the fitness curriculum where we have a great Fitness room that was updated about six or seven years ago with free weights dumbbells cardio machines so basically we introduce them to all of that equipment safety being the top priority and just kind of educate them on different ways they can utilize that room so then in year two they have a different Health curriculum for the first 20 days of that class and in that year we talk about healthy relationships dating relationships family relationships peer relationships uh domestic violence resolving conflicts we go into the risks associated with tobacco use alcohol use illegal drug use we introduce and get into sexual education um sexually transmitted diseases and um that's what we cover for the health peace and wellness white we also have a fitness piece to the wellness white which is similar to the green but the team games and team activities is different they won't do the same activities in white as they did in green so we try to change that up so after the first two years where they're plugged into that they have a menu of activities where they can choose from in their junior year so Maria is a former dance teacher so she teaches all the dance classes here we have a class called Fitness activities and weight training exercise which is based in the fitness room and that gets more in depth than the wellness screen and the wellness weight we have a sports and games class which is kind of your traditional phys ed class and then I introduced a Class A couple of years ago called intramurals games and activities which goes more in depth than Sports and games it's almost like activities you would see at a college or a university um about five years ago I went to the Cooper Institute in Texas and I took a walking class I'm a certified walking coach so we have a population and segment in our schools that really don't like to do a lot of the traditional activities or go in the weight room so we have a class that is designed for them so if they just want to walk there's five different ways you can walk we teach them the different types of walking Styles so that's an option for them we have a basketball class we have a racket Sports class so junior year and Senior year they get to pick what they want to do so that kind of sums up what we do over the four years strengths of our high school programs when I came here 13 years ago they had two choices you either went downstairs or you stayed upstairs so we've come a long way we've given them a lot of options we've sequenced it pretty well kind of like any other class here at the high school uh we use our common planning time and professional developed professional development time to adjust modify and implement the health curriculum and maybe change what we might want to do in terms of offerings for our students and then our third strength is we try to provide a safe open inclusive classroom and make positive connections with all the students we come in contact with some next steps a few years ago I applied for a U.S lacrosse Grant it was free it was just a matter of doing the paperwork and we got soft stick lacrosse we got lacrosse balls lacrosse is Big here in town so I introduced that a few years ago and Nicole and Rachel have been talking about getting that back in to the curriculum in the middle school and into our Wellness green and I can be like a feta system for future athletes um Maria Kelly just got trained and Catch My Breath which is a vague being curriculum that we started this semester with our high school students everyone in the wellness department is going to get trained with that catch my breath and then one thing that we're looking on to do in the future is uh Dr Laurie Santos out of Yale she has a happiness um podcast and she also teaches a free free class online which is called the science of well-being so you can take that class for free as a teacher and there's also a class for teens so we're looking at maybe implementing that into in the curriculum so that's kind of what we do at the high school thank you thank you Mark and Rachel and I will I will finish so our adaptive physical education we're very proud of the program that we currently have in place and we're really excited at what the future will bring uh Mike Capello Megan Phillips Peter Lavin and Mike Frazer our our uh adaptive physical physical education staff um I would be remiss if I didn't mention Chris Tolson who's a middle school phys ed teacher is also here um and I appreciate his support and everything that he does okay I program strengths as we support students who need modifications and specialized instruction to access the phys Ed curriculum it's a team effort and collaboration with the phys Ed staff along with special special education classroom teachers and related service providers across all levels and existing initiatives that celebrate inclusion are our school day games which is for elementary school we actually have that at Dartmouth Memorial Stadium in May our unified fiscal education class which is brand new to this year it is taught by Mike freits and Mike Capello the team teacher here at the high school it's a very popular class and it's it's it's done wonders as getting more and more interest in our unified athletic programs and it also really builds those relationships between our unified athletes and the individuals that help them during competition and then we have our young athletes that's a program at Cushman our next steps is to repeat the commitment to inclusion by meeting the 10 standards of excellence to receive our national Banner recognition which were one of a dozen in the state to be recognized and have continue exploration and networking of extracurricular activities for our students and families and finally composing more functional IEP goals through weekly collaboration with staff so just a few common themes that I think in the last 15 minutes uh that you've you've seen is reflective professional Educators who are committed to providing students with a safe and engaging learning environment Educators devoted to positive relationship building with students focused on inclusion motivated to explore currents and future topics concerning physical mental and emotional well-being encourage student voice and choice and finally provide students with the life skills to combat the ever-changing environment in which they live with that questions thank you Mr christopholi Chris sure I'll start thank you for the presentation as for to you as well as your staff it's great to see you know the wide-ranging activities in curriculum that's being taught across all grade levels um you know you certainly spoke earlier about your exceptional staff we have here and with our coaches and our PE department so I couldn't agree with you more and it's just it's it's just nice to see this you know we hear a lot we um we see a lot but it's nice to hear exactly what's taking place in the curriculum so I'm happy to see the last I heard or the last I knew I thought we only had two adapt to PE teachers but it sounds like we have a few more so it's nice to see that we're able to um allow our students access to curriculum that way so uh no thank you thank you presentation Dr Jenkins yeah so I agree I thank you for this presentation and all the work that you're doing you know I think I think it's a it's a sort of a popular culture Trope now to to say that PE is you know the class that a certain type of student really dislikes so I very much appreciate that focus on inclusion and choice and giving all of our students a place to be physically active and participate in ways that work for them so I really appreciate that thank you thank you Coughlin um thank you for the presentation um yeah it never would have occurred to me in high school that there was a walking class but I know that there are a lot of people who would have wanted to take it so yes the inclusion of having classes for everyone of every interest and level is wonderful yeah thank you um Mike capella was emailing me earlier he um you know reaching out about a upcoming event that we're doing that he is part of and and um and you know so grateful to have his help and his ability to volunte some students but they do volunteer to help out as well and and I'm excited about what that uh what's to come for that in his participation and it yeah what my colleagues said just that Universal accessibility um really promoting that that sense of belonging through again that yeah that walking Club as best mentioned I would have been part of that you know it's sort of No Stress not really necessarily having to interact in a way or just a comfort level of how you how you're able to you know converse with your peers it's really wonderful to see that inclusion in that way just that um you know that student voice and choice and and the accessibility and and it's really wonderful remarkable really all of the things that the thoughtfulness um you know in planning for PE for our students so thank you one one quick point also I'd be remiss not to say our phys Ed a unified physical education at the high school level uh Plymouth South High School was actually here touring and really looking and asking a lot of questions about that program them wanting to take the idea and bring it back with them so yeah it's fantastic and just like it's just like mutually beneficial right you've got kiddos learning and growing on on either end and really that you know that's the way we're going to help you know build that sense of belonging and and and people understanding how we are more alike and different in how we can uh you know Foster friendships through that I think that's beautiful so thank you oh thank you Mr christopholi and your staff uh yeah this was my idea when we had a brainstorming session in September you know as I said with music we all know what the high school band does what's going on with the rest of the program we all know what our athletic teams are doing and the Fantastic work that they do what else goes behind the scenes with the phys Ed and and the health and it's greatly appreciated one question I have three C's what are the three C's uh clarify consider choose we have them address what what is the problem that's how we clarify when we um consider we weigh out the pros and cons um and then we make a choice I and I think it's really important to write it down and to be able to see the pros and cons especially with life-changing decisions like what high school what college what career do I want to stay in this relationship do I want to get out uh those types of things and I think if they can actually do that whether it's just in their head on the spot or on paper it's a real like this is something we review all throughout the grades and it's an awesome tool even as an adult been there done that still do it so um three C's keep it going love it thank you Miss less such a great part in leadership is to surround yourself with very very smart people fall Prevail is also here for representative thank you sir thank you appreciate your time thank you and your staff yeah okay uh next item of business is uh organization of the committee and I will turn it over to our secretary Mr Kiley thank you Mr noon so um we'll we'll start this by seeking a nomination for chairperson of the Dartmouth school committee I'd like to make a motion that the Dartmouth school committee appoint Kathleen Amaral as its next chair of the committee I'll second that okay motion by Mr Oliver second by Mr Nunes do we have to do a roll call I think no it's all you just no I'm not a roll call okay a vote the discussion we'll shoot I think you're supposed to ask if there's any other nominations no that's right but that was sort of implied that was implied to nominate Chris back then we got to go to a boat you know come on no is there any discussion no okay thank you we have to formally vote so yeah all in favor aye aye okay opposed okay abstention ego ma'am you can put that in yours thank you all right all right now it's all you what's unanimous congratulations congratulations laughs I certainly wasn't running for the the uh the the seat but I will rise to the occasion I guess right okay so um now it's up to you for uh feisty I'm thinking of Vice chair okay so now I will um I will open it up for uh nominations for Vice chair uh Madam chair I'd like to nominate Mr Oliver to serve as Vice chair and I'd like to Second That Could I second that you can okay yeah I'll third it does Chris accept great okay and uh yeah so uh close the nominations and con nominations um any discussion on that no chair hearing none I'll pass that down so we officially all in favor now you can unanimous now you can get your graduation speeches ready yeah laughs excellent all right Madam chair make a motion that we appoint uh interim superintendent and assistant superintendent of finance and operation uh James Kiley is our secretary second um yeah so um officially we all in favor you'll get used to the Rhythm it'll come it'll come thank you congratulations guess what okay that's a revote in July yeah we have to remember to undo that right yeah secretary yeah we'll redo that in July all right you want to move here yeah I guess you want to walk down I'll go down there that's up to you sure doesn't bother me one way or the other sure I'll just stay for the rest of the science meeting yeah yeah that's fine okay do me a favor just coordinate one two uh want the best and want to uh Shannon now where are we where are we so next on the let me get my agenda here that's committee assignments so next on the yeah the um is the school committee assignments and so um oh chairperson comments I just you know thank thank you it's a it's a you know it's my pleasure to serve as a chair for sure um thank you I don't know so we all have in our packet list of assignments for the different committees um Dartmouth Education Foundation the collaborative Southeastern Massachusetts collaborative the association for school committees negotiation for superintendent um and then we have had on here School assignments although we at this point the last few years have not necessarily assigned folks and we can discuss that if you want to change that to specific schools in the past we've been assigned to specific schools policy technology fields and Facilities budget um John Charter and Dei and open space and Recreation for the steering committee so obviously yes one to add okay Dartmouth curriculum Council oh great pass that down and so we have another one we're going to add um and so how do we want to move forward with this we see on our list obviously Mary is no longer with us and so there's a vacancy there and of course folks might not want to continue serving do you what is the pleasure of the committee should we go down um as they are listed why don't we go just go run down the list okay so we have the Dartmouth Education Foundation was the assignment was Mary Waite this past year do I is anyone interested in serving on in that capacity I um I don't know if if it meets monthly or it meets a couple of times a year it depends a few a few meetings in the run-up to spelling bee a few meetings to deliver grants and then usually one of the key roles of the the school committee member on that is to meet with the administration because sometimes there's a conversation about the schools can fund this but they can't fund that and so that's so maybe five or six meetings a year I might recommend I'm I I've sort of done my turn on this one and for other reasons I think I need to decline but best might you be willing to do I would be willing to do that okay great awesome def okay next on the list we have um Southeastern Massachusetts educational collaborative Chris Oliver you have been serving in that capacity do you want to continue I'm happy to serve probably one more year okay currently the chair and before I step down I think I should turn over the chair personally yes okay sounds good um so the masc committee Mr noons you have been serving and you'll stay on negotiations representative superintendent John Nunes would you continue yeah yeah okay and then we have a backup Mary White is is not here so is somebody willing to serve as a backup to remind me this committee is this the person that sits in on negotiations okay all right that one I can't do because you meet during the day so yeah four o'clock you know three four o'clock so but you generally speaking make those Mr Dan yeah I make yeah I'm happy to be a backup okay um but again I may or may not be available but you you know been able to if that's okay with the we'll see and if the if the timing of the meetings changes I'd be happy to attend or be a backup okay okay thank you so down to school assignments um again previously years past we've each had an assignment to report to a specific school um and the last few years we've I think um operated in that we would stay in touch and you know a pulse on what's going on more globally do you want to continue that way or do you think we should Retreat back to um I mean I think it works fine the way it has been working type of deal versus having one person assigned I mean yeah I think if I hope that if there's a building administrator you know a director that needs to talk to one of us they will email pick up the phone and reach out to us type of deal so I'm fine that's my two cents I would be agreeable to that yeah okay so we'll keep it as is and um admittedly I I have to get better about that I think since covid I really haven't been as in touch as I would like to be but um and so then we have the policy sub policy committee uh with the assisted superintendent it myself and Miss Waite were on that committee I would happily give up my spot or keep it it's um it's not a committee that that meets on a very regular basis but it does meet when when need be so could if I could add we will have some meetings upcoming we are in the process of um of looking at the wellness policy okay we'll have some revisions on that um upcoming rather soon hopefully before the start of the school year um next school year so uh so they'll be they'll be a little bit of better work today and I also believe that uh there's been a number of policy updates from masks that mask have put out that we should probably be looking at a time absolutely uh question I have is you know it was previous it was uh Ms Roy was our assistant superintendent right so we just you know we've got to make a change in there too that probably should just you know for discussion purposes should be the superintendent at this point yeah superintendent or design yeah now would that change need to be voted on or is that just a incidental okay no all right so does any is anyone itching to be part of the policy committee I'm I'm happy to do it if nobody else wants to that was my first committee assignment and you learned some stuff about policies by being on the committee and how that works yep that would be fine if you'd like to do it it would be good for me to learn the policy and be part of it okay okay anyone else or shall I stay on anyone else itch into to join you do a good job okay so Beth and myself will be on that committee technology committee Mr Oliver yes I'll be happy to stay on yeah [Laughter] so feels okay fields and Facilities committee uh superintendent is the contact there Mr Nunes and myself have been on that committee Mr Nunes are you happy to stay okay does any is anyone else hoping to jump over to this committee I'm not looking at it or I keep it I'm fine with keeping it but I do want to put it out if anyone has an interest of being on that committee hearing none I guess it's it's us again um so this committee representatives to the town Charter committee I think we had it I'm so sorry oh very important one so budget committee um I'm fine with continuing to do that if anyone else wants to do it they're welcome to replace me Chris how are you feeling I'm happy to stay on okay Mr Nunes how are you happy to stay on okay I've been fortunate they've taken care of I've been lifting right great committee Representatives Town Charter committee so we have Miss Waite and Miss Brooks I think previously discussed and I was reminded I think it was the committee's pleasure to leave as is since the work is already we would pray that they would both continue in that way well Heidi confirmed but did Mary confirm I believe she did in our discussion when it kind of came up but I we yeah we could reach out to her right now I think that's the best yeah that'd be the best because that should be wrapping up soon that's what I'm that's that's my thought because they supposed you know they're supposed to be close to ready report right you know so I mean I'm yeah I'm just I'm assuming that that will probably be a fall town meeting yeah just a thought I don't know yeah and so next on our list um is diversity equity and inclusion committee that is sort of so yeah I would say like we should maybe skip that and come back to it and just leave that open now because I mean as we've talked about it if we do this we have to recharge it yeah um and so I think when we recharge it we can revisit who's appointed because I think we also have to look at the membership and you know the charge we talked about from the Desi report they had some specific tasks for that committee so I think it just makes sense to maybe leave that open until we have a discussion about what the charge is and what the what the makeup of that bitty that makes sense we have to re-sort of establish that I think hopefully our our new superintendent pending yeah what once we yeah get her on board with our Urban experience yeah yeah that'd be fun sure yeah that makes sense be good great okay and then um next on our list but not last because we we have been passed out a an additional but committee representatives to the town open spaces and Recreation planned steering committee Mr noons um you have been on that do you want to continue yeah I'll stick with that yeah we do and so we have Mary White as an alternate um does is anyone else interested in being an alternate On This Town open space and Recreation plan steering committee I could be okay we'll put you best as an alternate great excellent and so um we were handed this Dartmouth curriculum Council DCC um committee would I could I pass that over to you Mr Kiley to to talk about this a little bit sure thank you Mrs Amaral so um so really the the charge of the Dartmouth curriculum council is to align the curriculum and the professional development uh with our strategic goals and vision for the district so really looking at student achievement and making sure our professional development and activities as it relates to curriculum align with those goals um we have a the makeup of the committee um includes a school Committee Member so obviously we want your input um in that group administrators and other staff instructional staff from each building an administrative representatives from each level also serving on that committee and really trying to get a broad representation of of folks so we've had this in place Dr karafotus was the last person who served on this committee so okay it's been a little while um but we want to make sure we're actively trying to you know address and improve in this area so so we certainly would hope one of you would uh volunteer time it's about three to five meetings uh a year about hour-long meetings four o'clock ish um meetings so I would be happy to do this I do one of the things that I do and my job is curriculum and so for me just professionally it would be interesting to look at how curriculum decisions are made in a different system and levels and how that aligns with some of the things that we're doing with our curriculum so I'd be happy to volunteer but if someone else wants to do it I'm also happy to defer I'll just say that I'm happy to see this in front of the committee just because it's important when you know we're we have a hot 250 000 or 300 000 line in our budget for new curriculum it's good to hear or good to see that we have a representative there just so we can under maybe they can share the explanation of why uh what was chosen over or something else a little bit deeper so I'm happy to see this back great so Shannon you're sure we've got it awesome thank you congrats excellent thank you all okay thank you um and so now we're going to move on to Old business and I would like to turn that over to you Mr Kylie for discussion on the FY budget thank you Mrs Amber also um I guess the first thing I just wanted to do was report back um that we did at the last school committee meeting on the 27th we had the finance committee meeting that Thursday coming up they asked a lot of questions some of the school committee members were able to attend that meeting I appreciate your support um they asked a lot of questions I was up at the podium for quite some time it is available on Dartmouth Community media if anybody wants to watch it I thought it I thought it really was an opportunity for us to express the the excellent return on investment that we provide for the community and hopefully help them understand that money invested in the Dartmouth Public Schools is used wisely and produces results so you know I think we got that point across we we the I have I you know a set of motions before you to address the current uh FY 24 budget and this would pass that budget as we discussed before the town has us about 588 thousand dollars less than this budget I hope that you'll consider continuing to support this budget I I do have a meeting with Mr McGinnis and Mr Carrero the Town Administrator and and town finance director scheduled for tomorrow and I'm hoping to this is our number one topic for sure so hopefully we can work on it and try and find a way to make this happen so but I would appreciate your support with this budget process we did lower the budget by 361 thousand dollars at the last meeting and lowered it down to a 4.4 percent increase from a 5.1 so we've made efforts reductions Beyond this though are more drastic not to say that the reductions we've made thus far are without impact they definitely have an impact we tried to focus on attrition and and class size numbers that we felt we could adjust without having a major impact on students but there is an impact and Beyond this it is where it really starts to hurt more so hopefully you'll consider the budget as as I presented it with this series of motions we do have two numbers that you need to vote on and that is related to a conflict of one of our members so great Mr Nunes yeah thank you madam chair I'd like to make a motion to approve the FY 24 budget appropriation for bought us school classroom teaches in the amount of one million eight hundred and sixty two thousand eight hundred and forty seven dollars second okay I have a motion I have a second any discussion okay does this this is just a regular vote okay so um All In all in favor aye aye aye I will abstain one abstention thank you I apologize my phone is noisy even though it's off um okay thank you Mr Nunes for that Madam chair would like to make a motion to approve the FY 24 budget appropriation for the total budget excluding the item just voted individually in a previous Motion in the amount of 49 million six hundred and eighty nine thousand three hundred and thirty six dollars second okay any discussion yes sir I just have one question Mr Kylie can you walk me through we're going to send this to the fincom right as is what's the process if in the well like do we will we have to re-vote this if they don't if they don't approve that no if they don't approve it so how does that work out if we vote it and they don't they don't vote it there's a number of options obviously you could always reconsider right the budget and we could provide recommendations if necessary to do that um the fincom is a recommending body and can issue a recommendation on our budget as it currently stands or something different than that um there you don't have to change your budget based on their recommendation the the select board also issues a recommendation again you can decide to do what what you need to do um what you think is best as we move forward with this I depending on what happens tomorrow when I go discuss it at Town Hall and what happens with the finance committee and the select board we can have some more discussion about you know what this would mean and how we could approach it so can I just follow up on one other question given that what comes from the school committee the finance committee and the select board is but a recommendation to the ultimate decider which is town meeting what gets presented at town meeting if the three of those bodies are making different recommendations select board's recommendation okay which always could be changed at town meeting can it always be changed to town meaning I just was hoping to understand what the process is thank you that helps two things number one can I make a suggestion that uh in light of what is going on with this budget as fluid as it appears to be we have this on the agenda from here to from now to June so that we can at least keep it in the Forefront and know it you know keep updated on it type of deal absolutely and then number two we've got a and a new business we've got a discussion of Select board fincom request type of deal and I will have more comments to say about the budget at that point in time yes I'm going to rant [Laughter] great anyone else no we just need to vote we need to vote so because we've got a motion in a second on the 49 million so so um all in favor of the motion hi unanimous thank you thank you I will let the folks know that need to know that and uh we'll report back after because I get some more feedback thank you for your work on this Mr Kylie thank you thank you huge yeah so we're going to move on now uh right on basically right on time to new business and I'm going to start with uh smack quarterly report and turn it over to my vice chair Mr Oliver for an update thank you madam chair so as everyone is aware and for us uh Dartmouth is a member district of Southeastern Massachusetts educational collaborative we're also a member district of I believe a South Coast collaborative and I have the opportunity to represent Dartmouth on that board so just a quick little quarterly update of what's taken place since uh January is actually a number of things besides going through actually at our last meeting we approved our our rate scales for the FY 24 school year for all our teaching staff our teaching assistant staff as well as all of other related providers big news that I have to share is that in I believe in March the committee voted to approve and authorize the executive director Catherine Cooper to sign a purchase and sales agreement for a new building real estate building property it's actually a New Bedford industrial park located on the Dartmouth side of the um of the line so really excited we're currently going back and forth at the last meeting we authorized it I believe the bank's appraisal just came in and then some there we might be able to get it for a little bit less than what the RFP was for so but this is for a program that is desperately needed in this area this program this real estate would be it's actually a farmer daycare so it's a good sized building has a commercial kitchen and it would house a behavior program I would start off with with a one age span I'm not sure which age spam we're looking at but the ultimate goal would be to grow the program for a separate Behavior Day program which is certainly needed and we already have the with the wait list that we have it would be able to get as long as time goes by and we get things smoothly done we should be able to open it up for the first of the year so certainly exciting news for smack as well as all of its member districts so just to keep you updated once I have some more information on when the sale will go through I will let everyone know and other than that we just had just some really a lot of housekeeping things we did get a hundred thousand dollar Grant from Desi to upgrade HVAC in our in the buildings that we own so that's good news and other than that it's just your our typical um you know housekeeping items with um at the monthly meetings that's all I have thank you thank you Chris thank you anybody have any questions hi Mr Oliver thank you for um sharing that next under new business is discussion of Select board and finance committee's request for a joint session on April 24th 2023 which that date is actually one of our scheduled school committee meetings to be held at the Town Hall okay Mr Kiley could you talk a little bit about that thank you Mrs Emerald so uh last week we had the town department head meeting Mr McGinnis Town Administrator asked if the school committee would be available for a joint meeting it would be a town hall we could reserve a if you intend to be a part of that meeting we could reserve another space for our meeting try and coordinate around around that and certainly any special requests you might have in terms of when the Joint part of the agenda would be we could bring to their attention so thank you does anyone have any comments or questions Mr Nunes thank you a couple of things I don't want to go there and waste my time okay let me be perfectly honest uh when we've had a lot of these meetings before it's been finance committee and board of selectment talking about town fiscal policies and this item and that item and with all due respect not much to do with the school committee so it's you know as the old saying goes It's an hour of my life I'll never see again type of type type of veal so I don't want to go there and and have that's you know that that type of a scenario number two we're coming up on school vacation week next week and you know I for one uh am not going to be around and you know that means if they want us there and we decide we want to go it would be nice to have all everything in hand by this Friday afternoon which means I know it's tough for them but you know if they're going to be giving us Financial projections and things of that nature uh then it would be nice to have them ahead of time and you know I'm not going to get home over the weekend or early next in time for this meeting and not have a chance to look at anything so that that type of deal uh number three I will go I will go okay and I will look at the five members of the board in the finance committee and say I want the 361 thousand dollars back and I'm going to find it in the budget if I've got a Banshee budgets and I'll make the motion on town meeting Florida give us that 361 thousand dollars or the million dollars that they want to cut from us okay I'm not going to have them destroy our school system okay it's out there just find it it's there and let's work at it that way so plus the fact is as Mr Kiley says I mean we need a room ahead of time to probably do some housekeeping in in general stuff type of deal and then probably some place to have an executive session after I would think just to be on the safe side so that's my two cents Jenkins and then Mr Oliver so you know I I will say I've been chastised for expressing similar uh positions but I agree um you know I think part of the problem is that there are things that fincom and the select board need to discuss but that we have no say our role in so I it's not that I don't want to meet with them but to Mr noon's point is when we meet and we discuss things that are not relevant to us we have no stake we have no interest we have no say it it's somewhat disrespectful to us so if they can set up the meeting such that the items that we have a say and a stake in are discussed up front while we're there and then we can be dismissed for the meeting and they can discuss those other things I'm fine with that but I think we need to arrange the meeting so that when we're all together we're discussing things that we all are involved in and that we don't have to be there for the things that we're not involved in and the other thing I will 100 percent agree with we said this last time but I will say this if I don't get those documents in a timely manner I'm not going back because I have a job right and I also have a personal life and so I need more than my lunch break to read the financial information that's being sent to us in the last few meetings we've gotten it the day of and for those of us who work it's very difficult to digest the information when you're going to a meeting that same day so I'm not going to continue to do it if we can't get information in a timely fashion that allows us to be informed and engage participants in those meetings Mr Oliver so I guess I'll take a little bit of a softer tone I uh than my colleagues however I will say that yes you know it's certainly frustrating get at the documents the backup documentation uh right on the spot or the day of so the sooner the better for me I think these could be helpful these meetings if they're a little more collaborative and we if we're being invited we need to be talking about the school budget right we need to be talking about what what is affecting the schools and we also need to be looking at long term because we keep this came up at the finance committee meeting with uh with Mr Kai where Mr Kiley presented uh the other night and we we do have to talk about long-term strategy as to how we're grossly underfunded uh our per pupil and what we're going to do is a town to fix that so that's certainly something that I I think is worthwhile and it's also worthwhile to have a conversation about what are we going to do about this year's budget um I'm a very collaborative person I'm you know I'm willing to work with anyone but you know let's let's get down to it let's have an open honest conversation and let's you know at the finance committee meeting I I spoke and um I believe it was the the finance chair that spoke about Outreach uh the school committee doing Outreach and I kind of expressed my displeasure that you know there's only so much that we can do um this committee we all have you know we all are are putting in especially the past couple months 20 hours a week we have a number of other obligations um we're on TV people can certainly watch these meetings they can come to the meetings they can ask us questions I don't believe at our public budget hearing we had one question that came up so that tells me that there's there's really not that many people that are genuinely interested in in the school Department's budget I wish we could change that I'm happy to go to the meeting let's have a conversation let's see what we can do collaboratively this isn't just the school department issue this is a town-wide issue and it affects everyone in this town bottom line it affects school systems directly tied to property values end of story thank you Mr Oliver anyone else um so yeah I mean I'm agreeable to to that as well I mean I I really would love to have our um our time you know specific so that then we could depending upon that time meet before or after to do our business again to Mr noon's Point most likely executive session space and meeting space um do you have any more details as to the time that they're proposing or having it's a 6 30 meeting okay so I don't know if the committee would be available before we could do some housekeeping stuff and then go meet with them and then afterwards go into executive session or whether you have something else that you know that fits your needs better that's fine with me I will also just note though often said often at these meetings we spend the first 15 20 minutes when they're doing public hearing they're having people coming in again we don't all need to be present for that so if they do have that that's easier for us some of us who have to commute from longer distances right to just say look we're going to put you on the agenda for 6 45. if they've got 15 minutes of business up front let us know that that that makes it easier for us to not have to move our meeting back so I that's all I would ask like I mean every meeting we go to there's a hearing about a liquor license or this or that it's like right I know they have to do that and I know it's respectful of the outside people but if they could just you know if we're not at 6 30 if there's other business let us know that gives us more time to do what we need to do I can certainly work with with them to address your concerns so really making sure that the agenda and the materials are in advance and that obviously we have a place to meet before a place after a defined time to be there and really uh keep the discussion focused on what's important for you folks to represent sounds good one lesson that but has to do with the finance committee and the budget and everything else uh have you gotten the paperwork from the finance committee so for that reserve on transfer I have not yet okay that's fine no biggie that's fine I have it right in front of my computer screen like standing up so yeah that's fine look at it yeah I'm kind of done yet no biggie great thank you for that so we'll we'll look we'll look forward to the update as to the exact time and and keep you informed as we learn more about it okay I am meeting you know with Mr McGinnis tomorrow so hopefully we can begin to to really fine-tune that great thank you and so next actually we have the superintendent's update so I'll also turn that over to you Mr Kylie all so more MCAS this week we have some news on the high school niask visit it's been postponed so niask is I think my understanding is having some struggles in terms of meeting all the timelines post pandemic trying to stay on track so they reached out to us and we have postponed that to 2027 so the actual [Music] accreditation will take will be take place in 2027 there's work that starts in September of 24.
that's what you know 20 minutes yeah but I'm going another way and taking some gravel rotors I don't stay there yeah that was the old way but still going to have that's about 390 degree terms and I think a bunch of dirt line of big fine dark maybe that's good the only reason I bring that up is for that might be anything in consideration words here conversation you know if we're going to use a bus yet a great Community Suburban what's happening are we going to use a bus for sure uh no we that hasn't been determined yet uh you know tell people until we enroll in August so I really won't have the exact number if you've had open houses okay we've had some kids down at open houses so at this point in some of our high school kids that probably gonna cry so so I can't tell you that right now and so I said we have a bus a lot to figure out Bridge closure yes it's a five ton eleven until they start hooking into the to the road to the road completely the five times used have you given a thought or written down any numbers for release arrangement with the Catholic school that we had I you know initially we talked about splitting utilities which I believe that threaded Cloud speed it would take those six feet sixty count all utilities water yes all that I will tell you I checked it at a couple of things if we share teachers they will have to be paid by the diocese and not us I cannot and I don't get any credit for unless we give them a credit and we wouldn't be given the credit because they're not our students so they would actually shared so they were six ten Stars we pay 60 percent 40 or 50 50.
is it 476 did you include the 21 ere typing now so that's that's what the extra is is the ER which is another 20 and the reason why I ask and maybe maybe I missed this somewhere and I have slept a few times when when do we have to start paying the 18 teachers teachers that we we have one more year okay we have one year one more year do we know where that money's coming from you right now we've been transferring this year was 570. last year we did 700 000 from mno to Capital and we plan on doing that again this year we could I mean you wanted all the marbles on the table so a lot of what we transfer last year if you want to look at it that way did go to curriculum this year I mean it's it would have been nice if we would like just anyway we have to keep our doors open we have to have curriculum no questions so yeah another 570s on the schedule for the mayor revision we did it at the March 10th revision to transfer that capacity from mno over there so saving up and that's my bottom line I want to make sure we can afford this in any future that we want to give our teachers and we're able to so we do have we do have more than just teachers in Esser and you know we there's a couple things um those there's eight main teachers I think I think it's eight two from each campus that that money is supposed to cover when they come back in okay we have other positions that when Esther goes away those positions may have to go away as well and we've anticipated that in the district every you can see like that if we had to let the positions go in order to roll it back in and we just we make adjustments and then it will also Flex based on enrollment as well so would we not be considering filling the 18 positions we are but let's say in a year from now we have the eight rolling back in um like two of them are intervention us um at a level where a lot of school districts don't necessarily provide academic intervention teachers um maybe those are positions that we offer the people who are in them right now a different assignment and decide to dissolve the position so I want to make clear because I don't know if it's it's clear the way I wrote it those 18 positions are from our current staff that have resigned and those are going to be filled by new teachers who would not be eligible for this because they're new to the district this is only for those we're rewarding those that are staying with the district and this is for this year for 23-24 correct correct and then the following year we can read really wait and see absolutely yeah like last week for example like Thursday randomly we could apply for money that we hadn't been expecting that covers more than the price of all the textbooks which could allow us to save more money more money on our basically on our savings so we we're doing a lot of really looking at things that are like one-time expenses that we can pay from funding that will also be going away so they're not expenses that we're trying to carry forward but that are one time so in May I'll start revising all of those stimulus money funds and really calling that for okay what do we have coming up between now when those funds expire that we can do one time and maybe roll some ongoing back into mno at that point and flip one times into it so we we've seen some a little bit of relaxing on what initially they had required in those as it's getting like as deadlines are looming they're kind of doing okay spend the money you know that sort of a thing and so I guess we we've sat on quite a bit of funding um just to watch in anticipation of maybe that wolf like we initially had to set aside 20 of that money for learning a lot we set it aside our students haven't had those profound learning losses as a board you guys decide let's not tie all that up into positions we might need to let go so we run summer programs or things like that that we don't know like maybe then we just won't run them anymore or as a robust tutoring programs or things like that and again I want to make it perfectly clear I want to give them all I don't want to take anything away you're doing you're doing your your job by asking the questions and and one last thing is you know we have like a backstop you know we plan on transferring money about the same about 570 000 from Eminem the capital again next year to reserve that money for the staff coming back if all else fails we don't move that money we spend it for this and then it's a one-time expense and that money becomes available the next year for staff Now by moving money back and forth what does that do to our um Carry forward the reduces what's there in operating fund but if we're shifting expenses to Grants then it's adding money to our carry forward so we're in the process of trying to figure out what all can we shift to try to make our carry forward more robust and like the grant that we did you know the John John like race like maniacs and had like 87 minutes and I shot you have 11 more minutes no pressure was awesome for once the shoes on the other hand but they got it turned in and there's no reason to believe it won't be funded so all of a sudden now money we spent on textbooks allows us to you know build that carry forward a little bit more in a more robust manner so it's been it's been interesting as we've had access to a whole different type of federal funds we've had to really think differently about long-term short-term um you know and it feels you know I mean this will totally date me but um on Johnny Carson remember the plate spinner guy on The Tonight Show and he's probably too young the um and uh you know the guy have like 27 flights to spending to be like running up and down trying to keep them spinning and that has what stimulus money has felt like yeah right and so that's what we're doing and we're kind of looking forward to the day when we're not spending as but by the same token we're trying to be super smart like you know we bought some buses and things we're trying to be super smart about what we can do to help the district be financially successful and that's my big thing sustainability we have to be able to sustain everything that we're giving them I'm much more comfortable knowing that and I I did know this but I'd like to hear it once again that we're looking at this year only and we will evaluate year after year after year um would there be some way Mr Shull if we could get Maybe and not not for this in particular but maybe this goes along with our strategic planning even just some forecasts of what budgets and grant money and uh oh he's pointing at me well one of one of the things everything else that we could possibly look at one of the things that we had talked about in our and I don't want to say negotiations but in our conversations was um was it we need to we need to and and you know we do it but not necessarily as formal maybe that come September um that uh end of September we need to kind of do an analysis to see where we are and if we need to at that time adjust things what those things could be well plus side of the time but if we're to the point where um the forecasts don't look as rosy as we'd hope that we would need to make we can make adjustments at that time so it's a it's something that we do you know you guys see the the budgets and things like that on a monthly basis so it's something we do monthly but we do it more on more of a formal basis um and it's something that we can share with you we've talked about one day agreements that we've made among ourselves was that we would let first quarter come and go and then after fall break because October 1 counts are important counts in this business especially for Group B weights and things like that and so one of the things that we decided was after fall break the three of us will really reconvene with a different kind of microscope right and say okay enrollment's usually stable by the end of first quarter we have a pretty good idea who's coming who's going who's here how much they cost us how we get for them our budget numbers are fairly stable at that point and then we'll start making all the adjustments because we still have opportunities until June 30th of 2024 will be the last Amendment on any of the Esser so we still are over a year out from tightening up all of the budgets and those to match exactly how we want um yeah if you have something you can either pass it along email it to us whatever the interesting thing and I I think superintendent just said it Cindy kind of added to it and this is where I'm coming from on this issue um that we have other costs that we haven't talked about even costs that have nothing to do with salaries and benefits are also skyrocketing and if we add those costs to this year and then we take a look at next year and we do some projecting to kind of quote Cindy here to put into my words if we waited on on this expense even until we knew where we were in October I mean I I would not want to come in front of you and say well you know we went down 50 students for every 100 students in our district there's 780 000 attached so for me to be super conservative which I hope you think I am because I think I am if we if we knew what our accounts were and our expenses were this year and we could jettison that 576 000 teachers I think that would be a much safer time then you know exactly what the budget's gonna well again we don't even know our budget for this year I hate to say it our 100th day count hasn't been calculated by Ade that's why we get our under stake out so so that's what I'm saying we think it's about 18 million but there's other calculations that based on student account that's how bad this current year funding is it's April 10th that we still don't know our budget for the year not completely we know a pretty good estimate I'm just saying from my angle uh it would certainly I I just wonder what are we going to gain if we approve it tonight we we may not be able to approve it later that's the other issue is once we start school we just can't change contracts we can't just add money for a job that somebody's argued um does it have to be in contract form to give a stipend um what other form I mean I I think of other organizations that just give you a stipend give you free money right our issue is again you have to public funds so we can't just give money for somebody to do the same job they're doing now so that's that's a concern and you know I understand I understand where Mr Linens is coming from his focus is Eminem this is well beyond them at home and as I mentioned we have the backstop of utilizing that carry forward if we have to um there's some others as well but um you know I I if we but if if we don't if we don't do it now I would I I don't know if it's gonna happen we do it now we can't carry it through but I think there's plans that we can carry it through okay yeah I'm confident in that we can't that's what I'm just concerned right now for some reason an expense comes up and everything is so expensive anymore well I think that expenses are you know that could happen with with anything it really could um you know we have that we don't move the money back we utilize we utilize capital and we had talked about that was one possibility is tightening up capital and if we have to we utilize that so and if we get that grant that could be for very comfortable comfortable I truly truly am aware or two or I wouldn't be here right I still am just super concerned about the financial climate so how many chains in that backstop um so there's really two that really two that I'm looking at one is we don't move the money from m o into Capital that would cover almost this entire amount five hundred and seventy thousand dollars that's a one-time right now we're moving it in there to kind of reserve it for our so we don't spend it in mnl because we don't want to put continuing expenses in there that we're just going to have to and then we won't have those that's capacity to put the teachers into that's the first thing second thing is if we have to dip into mnl we don't that's the last thing we want to do but that's available as well um we have other funds that we can dip into before that um we have um you know we're looking at doing uh and this is not a sure thing but we're looking at doing mips which is Medicare uh cost recovery um that that could cover some of that not probably not all of it but if we cover some of that that's something that we're working towards so there are contingency plans on how to pay for this that are well beyond this 576 thousand dollars fair enough fair enough um which brings us to just one more Plateau yes which we know for the last 12 years our student account hasn't changed from 22.50 not even one percent my concern is if we add the positions we already added this year which were 10.
so just wanted to let you know that um spring Sports Mr Christopher Lee mentioned is is well underway I think a reflection of the good work that our coaches do I think we have I think 370-ish students participating in Spring sports right now so great great group of kids participating we have the math team Mr Shea filled me in that they were the Southeastern Mass conference mathematics League champions they also finished fifth place at the Massachusetts Association of mathematics League state championship in the medium schools division so proud of them and the work that they're doing chess team first place in their league so we've got some good things going on in the schools I'll leave music to Mr now yeah I know thank you and next on the agenda is report of the chair I am grossly unprepared for having a report you've shared some wonderful stuff I am going to leave the music to Mr Nunes but I will add that tomorrow Dartmouth CPAC will be hosting um a meeting here at the high school in this room in the library media center and we're going to have a um a guest speaker talking about the new Massachusetts Behavioral Health hotline and how you know the ins and outs of how that resource can be helpful to the Greater Community as sort of a One-Stop instant kind of connection handoff to a a an important resource um on the line so we'll have somebody there to talk more about that and that's really all that I have how about my committee Miss Jenkins so I have two items one uh just a reminder for everyone one that the spelling bee is on Wednesday night here from seven to nine in the auditorium so I encourage people to come cheer on teachers teams and whatnot and then my second item is you know hearing Mr Oliver's report about smack that we now get quarterly from him I'm reminded that we had said we'd like to have the VOC our VOC Representatives come and give a regular report I'd also like to if they ask because I know in the past sometimes I've asked Miss Gunther what do we want to talk about and I want to talk about the minutes um you know we recently had to address an issue with our minutes and becoming familiar with Mass General law and that right Mass General Law requires a summary of the discussions on each subject we've seen the minutes from folk they do not include a summary of discussions on each subject it's very difficult to understand what they're discussing our minutes are excellent thank you very much Miss Gunther if someone isn't here they can understand quite clearly what happened and what was discussed at our meeting I'd like to have our vote Representatives come have just talk to us about the things that are going on what they're deciding the way Mr Oliver did with smec but I'd also like to have a conversation about the minutes because I do not believe that they are complying with Mass General law right now and it's very difficult for us to understand what's happening and I think maybe they've approved the sound you occasionally watch on TV Mr news the sound is better you have to watch in order to see you can't read the minutes after to understand what happened and just to to follow up Dr Jenkins I happen to see uh Mr Shea at a spec meeting a couple of weeks ago and that and I happened to mention to them we haven't seen any minutes in a while I mean I didn't get into how they were because I did say to them when they were here and they talked about you know they they approve policies ABCD and I went but I don't know what ABCD is you know that type so I did chirp at them about that but I also did say to him and he was going to make a phone call to find out okay now I haven't seen him so yeah I'd love to just have them back and you know again get on a rotation with them having coming in and giving a report to us and I think also maybe Bristol Aggie too do we have a represent who who appoints the representative to Bristol Aggie that comes out of the selectman's office on the slack board okay so we'll just do voke then that's fine thank you I would also just like to add um that I think it's important that we also and you know not so much now but uh when our new superintendent comes on board it has the liaison to South Coast collaborative I would like to start hearing what's happening at South Coast it's not something that has not taken place in the past agree with that I will have a new sped director too so we can pop all of that into there that's it okay sounds good okay I'm going to turn over to you uh I'm assuming you have some updates yeah I do one with the music yeah last Sunday not much good but Palm Sunday uh we had nesma finals here in uh at the high school and our uh both our percussion winds uh took first place and their uh their individual classes uh the day before up in Reading with color God uh the jv's the JV color guy which is you know the Middle School uh they took uh first place in near class and uh Varsity was in second place this coming week with the percussion uh and by the way if I know what people are watching but there is also a friends and family night at quarter past eight for the color guide as they get ready to leave uh uh but the percussion of winds are down in Stanford uh Connecticut this coming Saturday from a MAC Conference it'll be a long day for them uh the color guide leaves uh Wednesday flies out Wednesday to Dayton Ohio for uh their WGI competition that stats on Thursday and then next week on Wednesday the 19th uh the percussion will leave and they'll start their competitions on Friday in Dayton Ohio and the winds leave the next morning the 20th and they start their competition out in Dayton on Saturday so it'll be percussion will be Friday and Saturday and the winds will be Saturday and Sunday and if you go to wgi.org you can get into you can sign up for flow matching and you know there's a fee I will be honest with you I don't know what it is but you can sign up and you can watch the performances online it'll give you their times and you can watch them online so very cool hopefully they'll bring back some more medals thank you like I said anyone else thank you great so um our next meeting is scheduled for as we were talking about April 24th it will be at Town Hall and more to come as to you know what part of the six o'clock hour or so or earlier that will will convene um and so at this point I will entertain a motion to adjourn into executive session for an update on Union and non-union negotiations not to return to public sector so moved second any discussion roll call Miss kenther John Nunes yes Kathleen Amaral yes Elizabeth Coughlin yes Shannon Jenkins yes Chris Oliver yes thank you everyone nervous [Music] thank you
we pay for whatever time if we shared staff so how does that work with benefits uh well you know that's up to whatever they give benefit we would you have to work 30 hours to get our health insurance so don't yeah if you work 1200 hours a year and you get the full benefit and then it's prorated down like a half time get fifty percent so you're splitting the teacher 50 50. the benefit would be 50 50 if diocese agrees to pay to happen I don't think just from my perspective that seems perfectly reasonable yeah and who's ever planned I don't know whose plan they'd be on like if they'd be on the school's plan and the dynasty rights as a check or you know that there's a lot of stuff to Etc beyond their plan and we write them a check for what they were for us could that be permanent reduction as well it's based on salary so that's the reason I say that we could pay the full salary here reimbursed we'd have to actually split it a teacher like okay we're paying 60 you pay 40 by the way it probably won't be the same one dollar I don't know like like I think I heard him say try to get to 75 80 percent of what most schools are paying on the salary area so if you're looking probably looking a little bit less for that time that our Capers and the FICA that's all based on one we pay so really well there will be some benefit to concealed ill staff so if we share that the same thing goes with part-time for the USB part-time private which you have to be paid by two that it needs same thing goes the benefits and papers I did talk to him about if they were going to do Sports there'd probably be at least on equipment for depreciation and stuff same way with football field should be easy abuse they know what they do shop use another cost per employment depreciation on a shop equipment so there's a few items in there if they tell me you know if there's not going to be a shot or anything like that offered to put a couple three about it there's so many variables that I don't know yet but there's always you know once you have specifics but I would expect appreciation on a program that they're using are equipment because they're going to appreciate right I mean if they use it a year you're going to have equipment to appreciate you're going to have uniforms appreciate all those things we'll appreciate and there's they're all set on depreciation value anyway so but no I have not keep things like I did give him that number about what I thought utilities give or take I'd have to look again about what I'd like utilities were and I continue to be concerned about how as a district we're going to be able to provide a gym and art and things to our elementary students in Wilson business at this a good solution for that at this point there is no uh right up the art specifically it might be music and physical education would be available for the classroom teacher to utilize that not only is it hard to find an art teacher or types I think I mean I think there's a big benefit not excluding the fact that we wouldn't have happened it might also increase the likelihood that you guys would only have to bring Suburbans over or something in terms of fussing um we've been surveying people and as far as we can tell the majority of people plan to bring their 73 qualificators have been a better business to happen um and I'm assuming the local parish is thoughtful word now they we still need to get the official though it's I mean largely behind it but we had like officially foreign [Music] transfer to be not out I'm kind of all eggs were placed in the basket of silver Lucas and then that didn't work out and so I felt like everybody was left scrambling on the land transfers haven't worked out and now I feel like always are going to be placed in the basket of the the Catholic School and so I have a hard time giving another year and extending things and now it's not just extending things that would really be going back on the motion that has been made and everything else is bought through and the plans that are in place for next year in the future to add to that I have concern about the quality of academics at this point because we have a lot of teachers we already had some positions that were not certified and that's a growing list to fill those positions that's just that's concerning to me to be that for another year I don't I think it's a disservice to the students academically so everybody's thoughts on them moving forward on that negotiations do we give them give the diocese the building what's that we give the guys to use that building put in this report is that an option that option do that you'd have to close the elementary portion from our perspective USD 112 that there have to be no attention centers there is the diocese interested in the entire building Roger um whatever yeah I think something that's hard about that is uh it's going to be difficult already to get in the junior high school like in all the staff and stuff and so to do this don't do that also for elementary if he would be a tall order so not in the media transition potentially yes not immediately interested in having the whole building I guess do not perspective on it those I think we'd be in the same situation like you said but could we sell the building to the city and the city could rent it lease it to the captain diocese but I think we'd be in the same position there couldn't be any Elementary there yeah that's correct the Oregon you know because deployed tennis centers there's no building numbers whatever they wanted to there's got two numbers right we can't give them just the 7 through 12 number yes now because it's an approved tennis center for the state by state statute to tell kids that they can't attend at the USD 112.
and we bring more in and this is the same thing we've been seeing in our little meetings I guess that now we've taken our demo account from 235 to 255 without one new student behind I know it's one year it's just these other these other costs we have them going up 600 000 again next year I want to I want to just stop talking about it I mean I'll support everything you want to do I guess that actually kind of answers my my next question or comment in the grand scheme of things what is 576 000 no out of uh you know when you throw in Eminem you throw in title you throw in um uh Esser you're talking you know in capital 23 24 million is this something that we have to make a decision on tonight or is it something that we could table and come back to next month I don't think that I don't think the information is going to change by next month so either we either need to take the leap and do it knowing that there may be some risks or we don't take the risk at all and that's the way I see it and honestly I think I'm willing to take that leap knowing that we can put the the brakes on if need be that way I can see this work it's not that I'm not that I've missed or you know Insight but if we take all the sites all the schools all the Departments and say Here's your budget 83 whatever it is of this year and and try to restrict and really maintain that and then because what I show for next year if we do this extra 576 we could be on a budget of 18.2 we could be spending 19.3 with all these other new costs 1 million 1.2 million over budget we transfer that money from Capital back to m o as long as we can make it work with that with everything in place and we just but that's that's what I see I see some budgets really being tightened up and managed and like we did with the buses I guess as long as you trust this to do what we did with the buses which is not four of them right off the purchase list and then we're going to get through and we're going to be careful with our buses we're going to make it well I don't think there's anything wrong with people being a little bit more fiscally responsible responsibility more than just you know tighten our tightening our belts in certain areas to try to get money into teachers pockets that's kind of what what the the I guess my goal is here so and it's John cool I have a question for you like we get so much for each child in the program do you think that'll get what the cost of living and everything do you think of the get race next year or well I'll answer that in two ways we we alluded to it just a little bit earlier but from the 22-year when we were getting 4 400 per student to the 23 or the current year where we went to 47.70 338 increase I would have to say that was only done by the legislature that for people finding because the floor is two percent I would say it was only done because they had the money to do it they only fund it when they had the money basically in hand so if they do that again this year at four percent or five percent and now that that 47.70 jumps to 48 or 49 or 5 000.
