great thank you stop commandering like uh Spanish supports were those evaluated separately or the same you you talked a little bit about it but I'm wondering what the um the summary evaluation of those thank you very much again president Lovato for that question yes so we um in the piloting process we did have teachers who are in our dual language and also just um speak Spanish right and serve our students in their native language also piloted it just in Spanish itself as well as the Dual language teachers so we were able to get a good read on the Spanish component of TCI and that was again one of the pieces that the teachers raved about that it not only supported them as a teacher and it's also in Spanish for the teacher guide as well but also our students and the students were actually able based upon some of the feedback to navigate it much more quickly than some of our teachers so they were specifically some second graders which is phenomenal so yes it's it was piloted effectively with our Spanish students and our teachers so thank you for asking great thank you so much if I may add Madame President obado we did it simultaneously so we did our english-only classrooms alongside our dual language for both our English only staff and our bilingual staff so it was embedded into the process we didn't hold a separate process or do it as a standalone it we did it in conjunction great great sorry hopefully move this over it's just myself sorry I'm sorry all right that's part of the problem about being too short right um so anyways I I guess um when I read this earlier one of um what stood out to me were the Deltas um uh and the different groups and knowing that um you know the from you know the lessons taking a long time to complete uh to online was hard for navigation it doesn't really correlate with some of the positives so I'm just curious as to is it adaptable is it something that you guys can can work with um tell me more about how they correlate with some of those positives because I I'm thinking about our especially our linguistically gifted students which you mentioned and if they are doing it in Spanish and they're having a hard time in Spanish I I get that a lot of our curriculums are translated from English to Spanish so not necessarily culturally relevant sometimes the relevance isn't in there so what are we doing to make sure that um the kids are are getting it I mean if it's if you already have all these Deltas that are already saying like lots of reading for example if you're linguistically gifted and you're trying to learn what it's you know especially um if it's not relevant to you I guess I'm just asking how flexible is it for you guys to adapt it to make it unique to our community so that the kids are and the staff Because by the looks of some of the Delta some of this came from staff not necessarily just the students right so Madam president Lovato board member Zubia thank you for the question any of our curricular resources that we have this one would be included are all adaptable in most cases curricular resources give you a whole bunch more than teachers actually need which is great and there's no perfect one so in there we would be able to customize the pieces that are specific to our district and that's where the scope and sequence and the pacing guides are going to come in and that's where alongside our teaching staff and the district support we would outline those for this curriculum and that's some of the work that we would map out for this summer so we're ready for August that's where we would identify which portions of the curriculum are we going to use how do we adapt it to be able to meet the needs of our students and then how do we train teachers to be able to utilize that resource and then train instructional coaches to be able to support teachers when they're out working and that's what our coordinator comes in with leading that Laura is there anyone on it thank you for the question um it's fairly adaptable and people transparency we use TCI as a secondary six through 12 for social studies and it's extremely adaptable so they both have those those components um so it's pretty flexible and around the time I know you had mentioned secretary Zubia that um around that it took a long time through the piloting process it was a short window of time but enough window of time to get a really good gauge and also a teacher is trying to internalize the curriculum internalize the units and so I think there was that could be a learning curve but that's where we come in as the district and we help and support and take some of that off the teacher as well thank you for your response because I know in the past that's anytime you switch curriculum from one to the other there's that transition period and that learning curve and I just want to make sure that you know we're not getting rid of everything that was working just to start something new I think because that's been um you know the issue in the past at least from a parent's perspective is the way you're switching again so I just want to make sure that that there is that transition period and and that that flexibility and I like the customization of it is actually working um in part as well during that transition period so it's not like we're cutting off immediately from the one that we had before and all of a sudden starting with a new one but that there is some flexibility there so that not only it's not overwhelming for the staff but more so for the students and the parents so thank you other questions comments I'll continue if that's okay I have a couple more um so in reading the comments around this um one really struck a chord with me and it said um we have to think about our students and their love of learning and this particular teacher went back to Mystery Science which I believe is our current curriculum for elementary um I I think I have some concerns partly with what you said is like this is another change it would be helpful for me to see the the rollout of new curriculum and when we're gonna need to be considering it again for approval because to me um I I read an article by Unbound Ed and it was actually a training and they talked about um how instruction needs to be grade level engaging affirming a meaningful and that basically comes down to it being culturally relevant I feel like there's such a missed opportunity here in our city because we hear about it all the time we're in between Refinery and Arsenal like I think there's so many Hands-On project-based um opportunities that we could take advantage to or advantage of for our students that will get them loving learning um and that's kind of missed about with me it it was I totally get that we have to play the game and we have to have it aligned to standards but I just worry about the timeline of accepting this getting all the materials in training our teachers with again another thing we're adding to their plates at the start of a new year where I personally would prefer that we take our time and do it right rely on our professional help with tntp and move this but I I don't want to derail all the work and all this is happening it just um it puts me in a tough position right now so it's not a really question more of a comment to the overall thing but I just I I really want to make sure we're intentional um especially when we have more leniency with with um disciplines such as science social studies I get math and English language arts is a little different but here I'd like to see us differentiate what we do in atoms 14.
so not just because she is a finalist correct for the Arizona to 2022 presidential awards for excellence in mathematics and science for teaching that's pretty huge Christy I know you love to talk in front of everybody but can you kind of tell me what this is about or can you explain this to the folks what this what this is yeah uh this is an award created by the National Science Foundation that each year each state gets to identify three up to three Math teachers and up to three science teachers as their top candidates based on an application process arduous application process and then it goes to the National level and they choose a recipient one from each state one for math one for science so that's a good question they they make a decision and send it to the White House and then the White House needs to make a final decision and the White House is stalling they have not announced for 2021 or 2022 yet so you know when I when I die I may find out that was the magic question well I'm going to tell you if they don't hurry up and get on it we'll just declare you the winner what do you think ladies and Gentlemen please give a hand again to Christy Peterson if you shake hands with the board one more time [Applause] next if I could have Mr Brandon Larson athletic director from Highland High School come up [Applause] so Brandon Larson Highland High Athletics they've had a good year just a little bit just a little bit we've got a state championship in football one in basketball and then some other areas is that correct yeah we have seven totals oh yeah we have seven total so far this year we have boys and girls cross country football basketball cheer five man palm and palm game day and then our boys volleyball is number one in the state right now and has a good shot of taking home state for boys volleyball so nice wow that's that's that's not that's that's not real usual and so but bran is here not just because Highland Athletics has done well so far this year he's here because he is the AIA central region athletic director of the year and that's pretty big please give him a hand and he is also the AIA AAA 6A conference athletic director of the Year congratulations Brandon thank you he was supposed to come last month but he couldn't and why couldn't you I was at an event at the school having to do Duty yeah working working we like it thank you Brandon congratulations to you and Highland High next [Applause] [Music] can I have Aspen is it C Buck is that right are you Aspen hi Aspen how are you good to see you I'm Shane McCord I'm the superintendent you all right it's all good let's watch oh oh I get those I haven't got those in a while let's look out here so Aspen you are a student at which school Sonoma Ranch Elementary and you're in what grade fifth fifth grade who's your teacher Miss Howard ah Miss Howard is she here tonight yeah where where is she she's over there stand up Miss Howard ah well let me tell you something you were nominated by another person did you know for something do you know who nominated you no who's the person sitting next to her Miss Erickson what grade does she teach second grade second grade how do you know her she was my kindergarten teacher and my second grade teacher you had her twice I've known her for a long time she's a phenomenal teacher well she said some things about you can I read them to you yes and everybody else all right oh we need about 33 000 more of you so Aspen gives her love of service learning and Sonoma Ranch back to Sonoma Ranch on a daily basis wholeheartedly she's involved in student council as an officer National Elementary Honor Society the podcast team and the student choir when she's participating in these clubs she participates to the fullest and is a leader academically she always gives her very best effort she's kind mature and the kind of stallion every student can aspire to be you're here tonight just because this was brought to our attention of what a great person you are not just a great student and we're always looking for people like you students like you who set the bar very high for all of our other students in our district and you at such a young age showing these leadership abilities and just the kindness that's in your heart really really is very important to our school district we really believe in ABCs and one two threes in addition and subtraction but there's another piece to that and you have it and it's right in your heart and we think you're worthy of being recognized here tonight so we appreciate you congratulations and thank you for being the person who you are please give her a hand thank you can we have your teachers come up too oh didn't know that was gonna happen uh-huh that's what happens when you nominate them well you guys shake hands with the board we'll take a picture with everyone how are you dear and we also have the principal Mr Colin Kelly give him a hand [Applause] go ahead and stand in there with him guys congratulations [Applause] and last but not least can I have Bonnie Hickman and master sergeant retired Darlene Tryon come up okay give me another one what's his name a little bit louder in here Chief Fire Control technician submarines Gardner oh wow wow well here's why we're here tonight and thank you guys for being here we're here to honor Somebody by the name of Joseph Jack and holder correct and what I have is he passed away in February at the age of 101 years old as part of his final wishes he had a list of people he wanted to receive shadow boxes in his memory Patterson Elementary teacher Bonnie Hickman was on the list and there's Bonnie Jackson state supreme surprise Mrs Hickman with the shadow box in her classroom on Wednesday April 5th now why is this person important here's why Jack was a World War II Pearl Harbor Survivor there are now only two Pearl Harbor Survivors remaining in Arizona he flew in more than 100 U.S Navy missions during World War II Jack would go to classrooms like Mrs Hickman's and share his story with the students he went to Patterson at least six times this is an individual that has served our country served it well lived a long life and I'm sorry he's not here to honor him in person but it's obvious that his legacy still lives on on all of you if you guys like to say a few words that'd be great when we were putting together Jack's service we did some number crunching he spoke to 80 000 school kids he loved going to the schools he was always talking to the kids and we made a challenge on the 14th of April at his service to every veteran there and there was close to 150 or more yeah to take up his gauntlet so any school that wants a veteran to come in and talk about our service I've got a really good PowerPoint about math where someone made a mistake in three days later we nearly hit an island yeah so but for his 100th birthday Sergeant Tyron Tyron started a campaign to try and get 100 birthday cards for him Bonnie's class stepped up and said they would open them and categorize them for them we got 14 705.
3.3 is our Personnel report you'll notice there is a lot of hires on there I'm like to give a little shout out um to our all of our different interview teams our principals and a special shout out to our special ed Department we have seen significant challenges in hiring our special ed Personnel over the years and to be where we are in April is absolutely incredible I think that our uh our initiative to kind of get started on this early has been massive and we're we are in as good a shape with hiring as we've been in many many years so I'm really excited about that 3.4 is our payroll and bills 3.5 is our donations we have three sizable donations from the American Institute of Aeronautics and astronautics as well as beefy we appreciate that 3.6 is the classroom use agreement with Mid Valley 3.7 is a textbook that is on display 3.8 is the canvas of our votes or the votes in 3 0.9 is the award of copy paper and Elementary student school supplies bid lastly 3.10 is the approval of this consent agenda application or right then I would entertain a motion to approve the consent agenda as presented I might start a second by kilburg all in favor aye any opposed all right next item on our agenda is our standard reports I'll hand that over to Dr Hitchens um I will call up Josh bulac for the next two action items but while he's coming to the podium do you have any questions about those reports that you see every month all right then we'll move right into our action Josh if you take us through those two items all right so the first one is um a request to transfer on equipment to um Batavia specifically Rotolo from um Batavia youth football so back in um a committee Matt it was 80s I was one of the 80s at the time football coaches and we looked at the landscape of football in Batavia and the way it was structured we had an eighth grade team only and the decision was made to transition 8th grade football to Batavia youth football that way there were less stops along the path of playing football after three years of looking at that there's been some successes but there's also been some challenges and a group of ads and coaches Matt and talked about it and really one of the biggest pieces of it is who we play now um the local schools won't play Batavia youth football because they're not associated with the school so the recommendation here is to transfer the equipment back to Rotolo but not only the eighth grade program but to start a seventh grade program and that way we're in line with every school in this area so that we can play local school districts and the kids don't have to go on Long bus rides to uh to their competitions any questions about this I'll just make a comment my son played 8th grade football this year and um it was a overall a very positive experience but to Josh's point scheduling was very problematic and we ended up playing one school twice and so and then even just because the games would kind of pop on the schedule like the week of it would be challenging sometimes to get to the away game so the way I'm kind of looking at this is access like I'm sure there were some kids that had a hard time making some of those games and so I think this is going to be a positive move it's been like that for years yeah all right well then I would entertain a motion for the board to accept the transfer of ownership of 7th and 8th grade football equipment um from Batavia youth football moved by kilburg second by lock on favor aye any opposed all right next item Josh all right so the next item is the approval of a service con uh administrative service contract with Blue Cross Blue Shield now this typically doesn't happen at this time of year so in September the board approved all the health care packages for our employees one of the changes was to move from Blue Cross to healthgram and this committee did a lot of research and work to make sure that this was an appropriate move to better get quality care to our employees at quality costs and manage costs after several months of being with this company um there's been some hurdles and whenever you make a change there's difficulties but the difficulties here were literally if a staff member tried to go to Northwestern they wouldn't take the insurance even though it was registered under the insurance having that access denied or made more difficult is a stressor that the staff doesn't need so typically if there's an issue with Health Care we'll try to you know weather the storm if you will and at a natural time make that transition in January but what we were able to do was get out of our contract with healthgram if the board approves that and then re-up with Blue Cross for the remainder of the year so we're looking to re-establish our relationship with Blue Cross starting July 1st I mean I guess I'll speak to this one again because I'm on the insurance committee I feel like I was speaking to Weight Watchers tonight but I just want to commend Josh in the committee you know they made a decision to go to healthgram with the best intentions and at the time on paper it made a lot of sense and like Josh said there was going to be some anticipated hurdles but there were some unanticipated things and so I think a credit to Josh and the members of the committee they listened to the teachers and said this isn't working and when we found out there was an opportunity to go back without any penalty and I will say you know I had we had a meeting earlier we talked about a mental health program that we're implementing that's intact that's not changing so really we're just kind of going back to something that uh people wanted in hindsight and you know there's still challenges ahead on managing costs that's not going away but I think in the short term this is the right movement my understanding is it's been enthusiastically received by the teacher so that's always a good thing too all right I would entertain a motion that we approve an administrative Services only contract with Blue Cross Blue Shield Illinois effective July 1st seven second move by matter a second by Mike sir all in favor aye any opposed all right uh that passes the next item on our agenda is we're going to um celebrate our XP members and Mrs meitzer was going to um celebrate our um our student rep I sure am um so Madeline um view is exiting as a student ambassador with us and I had the pleasure of being one of the board members that helped um welcome Madeline on to our student ambassador position within the Board of Education and from the time that you interviewed I knew that you were special and we have hundreds and hundreds of students who are special thousands actually every one of our students is special but Marilyn you really stood out in the crowd and we could not be more thankful to you and more proud of the way you held this position and this is a special position within the Board of Education we only have two at a time and so you're really the student voice and that's why all of us are here that's why each one of us has a position and the board is for the students we're here for the students and so we're super thankful for the connection that you helped us make as a direct line to the students how you report it out each month about what was going on in the high school and Beyond helped us have a better purview to our our constituents as well as the students at the high school as well as the other schools and um I want to thank you very sincerely because you took time away from family from work from school clubs activities and more to do the service to the community and it is a service and when I think about student servant leadership I think about you so thank you so much for everything you've done the board has a little has a little present for you um I'll meet you around thank you so much to you [Applause] thanks Aaron I don't know who I'm guessing the doctor I do have a little presentation for today as well um so this is just um some current things that are going on in the school so all spring Sports have now started and are all going very well um prom spirit week is next week followed by prom on Saturday May 6th most seniors have been announcing their amazing plans for next year whether that be a four or two year university the workforce military Gap year or any other plans to have clubs are wrapping up for the year and already planning amazing events for next year and summer camp registration for sports are now open and accepting many student athletes to participate in the camps and students are finishing the school year strong and getting ready for summer break and then the student the other student ambassadors were not able to be here tonight but these are some of their plans for next year the student ambassadors will continue to be the voice for the student body and present current events in the district we plan to continue to work with other schools in the district to make the education as students better and to bring the different schools in the district together and then being the voice of the student body is very important to us and we will continue to represent the student body as a whole and then I prepared a little speech for the night too since it's my last night um so as my time as student ambassador comes to a close I wanted to mention a few things I've enjoyed over the past two years and to thank the board and my principal Dr Smith for the amazing opportunity over the past two years I've had the opportunity to learn about the Batavia School District the way things work and why they make the decisions they do in order for the district to function and to provide the best opportunities for all students I have been able to work alongside my principal to solve issues going on within the district and create solutions to set issues for the betterment of the student body I have also been able to work with the other student ambassadors and gain their perspectives on topics which has also helped me broaden my Horizon I have learned amazing leadership skills as being the person who represents their student body and speaking for the students as a whole I was able to be the voice for the students which helped the board understand our perspective on what occurs in the school as they continue my academic career at the University of Missouri I will always remember the knowledge and experiences I've gained from being the student ambassador thank you thank you Madeline I was going to ask you where you were going to school so thank you for answering that and I did just want to add one more thing I apologize um it takes a lot of courage to be in the position that you were in the last two years and it's not easy coming to these board meetings as as an adult but as a student I just really want to speak to that courage and I hope that you find your voice throughout college and throughout your adult life so thank you for being you and thank you for being authentic I feel it and I'm thankful thanks Manny all right tonight we have two board meet uh meetings actually in one tonight is two meetings in this meeting that is about to adjourn is this is the last time this board will be together so um some of the board members have prepared remarks for the exiting board members I'll start with Aaron all right um uh so I'm going to speak on behalf of Mr Lowe here so uh College staff Community thank you for this opportunity it is with appreciation and honor I have the opportunity to speak on behalf of my colleague and friend Mr chrislo as he prepares to leave public office as a member of the Batavia school board but before I begin speaking about Chris I would like to recognize the other two outgoing members Miss Aaron meitzler and Miss Kathy Dremel I just want to thank them for your service to our community and your mentorship and your friendship I know my children have benefited from your leadership and it's been a real privilege to serve with you so thank and I would also like to welcome the new board members who are in attendance in the audience Miss Daniel sliger Miss Raquel Gonzalez Thomas and Mr Rob aralandu and their families I see some of them in attendance as they prepare to be sworn in as new members and we're excited to work with you and face the challenges that are ahead so thank you for that um so Mr Chris Lowe he is a recovering architect you might have heard him say that before he was elected by our community twice in 2015 and 2019 and you might remember his campaign signs they had a very catchy slogan aim high and vote low for eight years Chris sister with passion dedication and unwavering commitment to our students I would like to recognize his wife Jill and his children Quentin and Addie for the sacrifices they've had to make to allow Chris to serve I know there's been a lot of nights we've had a board meeting and as soon as it's over he's checking the score of a basketball game a volleyball game the results of a track meet so he has definitely made sacrifices as well as they have during his tenure Mr Lowe has served on the capitol projects committee curriculum and assessment advisory committee resource responsibility advisory committee and has been an Illinois Association School Board delegate Chris has been involved with the student ambassador program he has been a liaison at six different schools and has worked as both a booster and Park District liaison to list just a few of the areas Chris has provided leadership however I believe Chris's greatest and I could see maybe two of his passions amplifying voices and equity Mr Lowe has been a champion for anyone who feels excluded or is interested in having a greater voice in our community Chris has been one of the driving forces in our District's evolving Equity Journey his passion for creating a safe and inclusive environment throughout BPS 101 Batavia and Beyond is undeniable and I have a feeling your work in this area has just begun Chris so I do have to say on a personal note as the person who has said to your right at every board meeting for the past 24 months we've discussed about every topic you could imagine could come before this body and there is a lot we've agreed on and we've also had our fair share of disagreements and sometimes they've been heated disagreements but we've always been respectful to each other we've always tried to listen and we've always tried to understand and because of that we've been able to find common ground and I know because of those conversations I've grown as a person so thank you for that I look forward to the conversations we're going to have in the future and so with that your time serving here in this chamber is almost complete so I just want to say thank you for your service and I want to wish you and your family health happiness and success in whatever endeavors you choose to pursue next godspeed and be well thanks appreciate it [Applause] well after all those prepared remarks I told Kathy I hadn't even written anything down because I've known Kathy for even before she was on the school board we went our kids both went to AGS together so I don't know 15 years since we moved to Batavia so 15 years um it's been a wonderful time serving on the board with you and it's been truly an honor I think you've served this District quite well in the last 12 years it's been a pleasure there's so many things that I would love to share but I don't know that I can as our text this afternoon mentioned the thing I'm most proud of what we've done together as a board is I think giving Chromebooks to all the students I think that was probably one of the best things that we've done as a board and I don't know if you're going to mention that later and I've stolen your thunder but I think under your tutelage we've done that and it's been great privilege for the students here I wish you so well in any future endeavors I know you've grown as a woman um from where you've come I I remember sitting on the back patio at AGS during the flower sale do you remember that oh yes that was the first time I met Sue and she told me I don't play nice with people with people yeah here I sit if you could imagine if you could add up the volunteer hours between the two of us plays a lot nicer than yes but all the volunteers things we have done and I know there's a lot of people out there it's all volunteers that make this possible and that's what we all do that's why we're here to help the students that's what yeah that's what this District runs on is people that just want to do best for the students and that's what Kathy has done so I wish you well and good luck in the future thank you thank you thank you thank you I can give you money I'm next I'm going to speak about I'm sorry is it okay Wallace yeah so I do have some things written down here about Aaron meitzler um I requested the opportunity to say goodbye to Aaron on behalf of the school board because of the impact that she's had on me she's the one who initially got me on track to join the school board she talked to me about the opportunity to impact the community and make the difference in lives of all the families so I'm always going to owe this rewarding part of my life to you so thank you for that Aaron and her family moved to Batavia around 10 years ago and she served the community ever since her list of volunteerism in the past years is more than I would imagine most people do in a lifetime I've heard from a lot of people that volunteering can be a thankless job so I'm going to thank you for some of the things that you've done so bear with me because this might take a minute so thank you Aaron for participating in the Batavia foundation for educational Excellence as a vice chair thank you for co-chairing the Batavia inter-school Council for being the VP of the music Buffs acting as the liaison for Road solo Middle School thank you for being a Committee Member for the BPS 101 hall of fame or Hall of Honor committee and for being a member of The 100 women who care in Fox Valley let me scroll down thank you for serving as part of the Bulldogs on lease auction committee co-chairing 100 kids who cared Fox Valley as well as being the coach of the 2018 Batavia October family day thank you for volunteering at h.c storm is a committee and chair member and then as PTO president for two years and for being the PTO executive on the executive board for four years and not to mention that you've served the community for four years as a school board member and as a VP for the past year thank you for representing the school board at various committees over the past years you've been represented as a plaque uh Beck that the equity commission and with the uh with the student council or student ambassador representative and I I think I just want to thank you for being a great representative of the school board in general and um basically what being a great active citizen could be in Batavia every time I speak with you you're positive and insightful you I know you put your family and your community before yourself um and I know that you've already volunteered to stay stick around with Bic as a co-chair member so I know you're not going anywhere Aaron's going to have children in elementary real middle and high school next year so I'm sure we will see you around I don't think you're stopping anytime soon so thank you for everything that you've done thank you um the three exiting board members are going to make comments tonight Chris we can start with you okay last time you have to listen to me do this um good evening wow what a journey this has been it's difficult to believe that I began volunteering in our schools 12 years ago I began as a volunteer at hooverwood school I joined the PTO worked my way up to PTO president while there I helped start the Watchdog program in our district in a program that continues today PTO opened doors for me to meet people across the community some of whom encouraged me to run for school board I looked into it and I was surprised to find out how easy it is to run for public office did you know that you can get on a ballot with as few as 25 signatures for some offices I believe the number is 50 for school board considering we have around 25 000 citizens in Batavia that's not a high bar for entry initially I was surprised the community decided I may be a good leader and elected me to serve on this board I have since learned imposter syndrome for those who don't feel like they're part of the mainstream is a very real thing I have been honored to not only be elected once but twice by this amazing City while times haven't always been easy and the pain non-existent I would not trade away the experiences I've had I've made a conscious effort to get to know as many community members parents staff and students as possible I have made my best effort to speak with anyone who has concerns about our city or our district I have done my best to answer questions and Lead folks in the right direction to get the best resolutions for those concerns I wanted to truly represent the people and do what's best for our children and our community as things have been winding down these last few weeks on the board I spent some time reviewing documents and emails I created during the last eight years in 2018 I created the idea to start a group to empower batavians a few of us gathered and talked about the ways that we can make Batavia a better place following the murder of George Floyd in 2020 that concept merged with the ideas of other community members and evolved into the Batavia Community diversity initiative we have spent the past three years educating ourselves and the community and making our town more accessible Equitable and welcoming I began encouraging community members staff and students to use their voices to speak to speak regarding Equity concerns over the past few years I have seen more folks reach out to our Administration and board I have seen an increase in emails and we all have witnessed the stream of students parents and teachers who poured their hearts out about experiences they had in our district while it was may have been heartbreaking to listen to some of the stories and I know it was difficult to share your pain I want you to know you have made a difference local efforts have forced the district to acknowledge that we do have biases that prevent some students and groups from receiving the same opportunities without barriers that many of our students benefit from we have used this information to try to do better and the fact that we're even talking about it is evidence of that while these efforts may not have been as successful as some would like and we may not be seeing the bet these benefits in all classrooms we have made tangible strides to do better we adopted an equity statement and created a space on our website for people to follow our Equity Journey we provided training opportunities for staff we created an equity committee and hired a consultant to help guide that committee Equity concerns were a driving factor in the characteristics our communities said they wanted in a new superintendent as a result we have hired Mr Kim who is inspired to continue our work the voters have elected three diverse newcomers to the board in what I believe may be the first women of a latinx descent and the first man of Asian descent to represent our town we are having conversations regarding inequity and bias that weren't even on the radar when I got on the board as I said several years ago when we began this journey this is a marathon not a Sprint while progress may not be where some people would like to see it it is plain to see we're in a better place now than we were just a few short years ago last week I was asked what I'm most proud of having served on the board of education while we may have accomplished a lot of us aboard I take special pride in knowing I have empowered others to give their voice power knowing I have incurred encourage others to follow the chain of command to make themselves vulnerable at board meetings to volunteer for committees and even run for office is all the Legacy I could ever hope for knowing there are community members who are motivated to pick up where I'm leaving off and continue this journey is allowing me to step away knowing our district and Community are in good hands even if there is still a lot of work to do I've made a few observations lately that give me tremendous hope for the future I learned that Millennials have recently overtaken Baby Boomers as the largest generation over the past few weeks I've watched students lead protest and disrupt the traditional ways of legislating in Tennessee to push for gun reform so that they can feel safe in schools and in society and I was shocked to learn that canelan has elected a 19 year old college student with only 291 votes as a writing candidate to sit on their newly elected School Board just a few weeks ago I'm sharing this with you because I want young folks out there those in our schools now and those who have graduated to know that they can change the way things are done just because things have always been done one way doesn't mean we have to continue on the same path you are the ones who have to live with the decisions made by our elected officials your local government controls a lot of things that contribute to your daily experience from streets and sanitation to how well your neighbors are educated to what to what amenities we offer in our community and who has access to them are mostly determined by your city council School Board Park District board and Library board this past election only the school board and Park District had contested races as I mentioned earlier it's surprisingly easy to get on a ballot and often you don't have competition okay I'm almost done in conclusion I want to leave you with this plan step one educate yourself on how our elected bodies run attend meetings or watch them online make an effort to introduce yourself to elected officials and administrators get to know them if you can watch and learn about what what they discuss and how they make decisions step two use your voice to let them know if you have suggestions or concerns learn how to follow the chain of command don't be afraid to escalate your concerns if you don't receive the resolution you're speaking send emails speak at public comments request meetings with the public officials to speak with them one-on-one they're your neighbors and Most Wanted do want to serve you the best way that they can they're just waiting for your feedback step three volunteer to help ask if you can be on a committee offer solutions to problems you see fill out the surveys participate in the focus groups see if there are ways you can use your voice to influence our future step four run for office the best way to make a difference is to be in the room where the decisions are made take what you've learned in steps one through three and help us create a welcoming Community for all where more opportunities make a better life for everyone be the change you want to see in the world with your leadership I am optimistic our community will only get better thank you for tolerating me for the past eight years I'm not going anywhere but the next time you see me I'll be speaking from the other side of this desk perhaps I will see you in the audience here or at one of our other governing bodies together we can build a better Batavia thank you Chris yeah well I just want to take a few moments to thank a laundry list of people um Lisa Brad Steve Cindy Tony Hawley Todd it's been a pleasure I've enjoyed every moment of working with each and every one of you and it's been a journey and um like Chris said it's not a Sprint it's a marathon and the destination is constantly changing and so the one destination that remains constant though is the students and I'm really really proud that this board and um our leadership is so student focused because that's why we're all here um I want to thank my peers here Chris RJ Craig Sue and Aaron specifically and first for serving alongside me it's it's been the honor of a lifetime truly it has and all of the things that I um did and accomplished before I came here brought me here all of those steps um enabled me the opportunity to serve in this way and I am forever thankful for that truly truly I am and I just want to say a few words specifically about Kathy um Kathy you know many of you know in this room actually that one of the biggest reasons I ran is because I felt strongly very very strongly that the the elementary schools needed a voice on the board I was not shy about that and it was not quiet about that and it was not very popular on the board at that time and I wouldn't let it go I would say things like we have sex other schools we need to think about the elementary schools and Kathy said I'll never forget it she's right we do and I will ever be forever thankful for that because it really was a turning point and we did a lot of really really great things that I think focused on elementary schools because at the end of the day if we don't get it right at those six schools it makes it much much harder later to get it right at the middle school and the high school and so I just want to thank you Kathy for helping elevate my voice because although my voice frequently shakes I am very very um deliberate and what I say I don't often speak but when I speak I feel people listen because they know that I'm thoughtful in my Approach and I've taken a long journey to get here and I want to thank you for supporting that because I really do think our elementary schools are better for it and ultimately our high schools are high school and middle school is better for it so um thank you for that and thank you for always always listening to me say but what about Mental Health but how are the kids doing emotionally how are the kids feeling because that to me is the most important thing and I also know that that's not always the most popular thing to say but it's true because if our kids aren't healthy here they cannot learn they cannot function they cannot be socially healthy and I want to thank this board for always um supporting me bringing that up so thank you and thank you for everyone that believed in me and enabled me the opportunity to serve in this way um I like Chris would encourage anyone and everyone to find the courage to run for Library Park District or School Board city council um PTO PTA anything because that's what makes a community great is all the different personalities all the different viewpoints um that's what makes us stronger so thank you and that's it thanks yeah [Applause] who are a school board meeting junkies probably are aware that I actually rarely speak at the end of a meeting um but tonight I'm going to uh I have been on the school board for 12 years and for 10 of those years I have sat in this chair as president and I did as Sue alluded to talk to some of our former board members about the things that over that history of time they were most proud of and I'm going to start with the fact that um almost the first thing I did as a school board president was get to welcome Dr Lisa Hitchens as our new superintendent and so um one of the most meaningful things for me personally is the fact that Lisa and I had almost the exact same tenure the time she was superintendent I was president and that was probably one of the most meaningful opportunities for me to grow in my life those of you who know my story know that I have been so passionate and so in love with work as a school board member that it led me to going back to school 10 years ago and getting a math degree and six years ago I started teaching high school math apparently I've told I've heard from the Illinois Association of school boards they've heard a lot of teachers becoming school board members and the first one they know that has done it the other way some other things that that other school board members have mentioned and some of my own experiences uh hiring Lisa as Sue mentioned we brought Chromebooks to all students in the district and we were actually uh better prepared than a lot of our neighbors when it when we were hit with the unexpected um difficulties of covid uh we created this amazing partnership with the boosters and put in a turf field and for a landlocked school this tiny patch of land went from being used a handful of times a year to being used literally constantly we have probably the best dual credit programs anywhere and many of us on this board have had children that have gone to college my own daughter is going to graduate her undergraduate in three years thanks to her dual credits um we are one of the first schools to focus on social emotional learning and um spearheaded a lot of that focus and that just ties right into what Aaron was talking about with mental health we had a huge growth in AP class offerings we've had all of these authentic learning experiences including our partnership with wabanzi Community College for their manufacturing program um we were we got kids back in the building during covid despite some very strong objections from from some of our stakeholders because we recognize that kids needed to be in our buildings we've repeatedly been named one of the top 25 excuse me one of the top music education schools in the state and we were recently named one of the top 25 schools in the state for athletics um those are all amazing things we've done one of the things that as a person who originally had a business background that I am most proud of that I think is some of the most important work we did and sadly Tony iglesi is not here to um to to hear this tonight but we owe him a debt of gratitude our finances have taken a return to the Titanic people we went from a form of financial warning to now we are a school district with financial recognition we don't have to issue tax anticipation warrants any longer in the spring we have changed our insurance program so that we are actually um uh incentivizing the behavior that is good for our employees that gives them the opportunity to make good health decisions have great coverage but also do it in a way that saves all of us money we created a new salary schedule that I know is often confusing to our employees but truly when you dig into the numbers and if you want to dig into the numbers Tony can help you shows that we are paying people more money less money out of pocket to have that professional development that gets you raises and that's something else I'm really proud of and the reason why these things are important is for is twofold we are Financial stewards for our community how we spend our money is extraordinarily important even more important than that is all of those things have allowed us to offer so many of these opportunities to kids we have Community Preschool we have elementary school supplies at no cost appearance we have electives that we've been able to offer we have a full day kindergarten experience the list of things that we have done in the in the past 10 years once I started getting input from other people was amazing so I'm incredibly proud of the work that we did and one last comment I want to make and I think this is a huge tribute to Dr Hitchens there has been one one constant for the 10 years that I've been on the board people come and people go our four senior managers have been the exact same four managers all 10 years that is unheard of I had the incredible privilege of working with Steve Pierce Dr Newkirk our newly minted Dr and glacie and Dr Lisa Hitchens for 10 years they are probably 10 of the best years of my life the best work that I ever had a chance to do so thank you guys um those are my comments I would entertain a motion for us to adjourn scene Ada thank you all right now I have an entertain motion so move root by lock second bite loud all in favor all right all right all right we will adjourn we'll have just a momentary recess as we move people around and people say goodbye and then well then we'll take your gamble I don't know where you're gonna use Paul to order the special meeting for the reorganization of the board education at 7 51 pm and so our very first order of business before we call roll is to swear in the new members board so I'm going to turn that over to Craig Meadows who didn't get to speak at the last minute we're going to let him speak at this meeting so okay go ahead and square them in all right so as I mentioned everybody I'm going to kind of read just each bold you guys just respond back all of you will read together yeah go ahead all of you guys too okay I do solemnly swear that I will Faithfully discharge the duties of the office of member of the school board of Board of Education of Batavia School District in accordance with the Constitution of the United States the Constitution of the state of Illinois and the laws of the state of Illinois to the best of my ability School District in accordance with the Constitution of the United States the Constitution of the state of Illinois and the laws of the state of Illinois I further swear that I shall respect taxpayers created fostering Excellence for every student in areas of academic skills knowledge citizenship and personal development to work together with the district superintendent to lead to leaving the vision of the board created Wall Street Excellence academic skills knowledge citizenship and personal development thank you [Applause] Cindy will you call the role of the new board please here Gonzalez Thomas here Harry Gilbert here here R.T Mathis here present Danielle sligar here right um the role of the board president is normally to run in the meetings we are currently without a board president this is the reorganization meeting so to launch this meeting someone has to be selected to serve as the temporary president and temporary secretary and so I would recommend I would actually entertain a motion to appoint Lisa Hitchens that's me as president pro tem and Cindy Rodriguez as secretary Pro Tem so do I have emotions oh that is so exciting move by math this second second second um all in favor all right any opposed the motion passes so just temporarily I am the board president so the our very first order of our business is the favorite thing that we do as a board of education and that is to celebrate our students so thank you for your patience um I'll call up uh Miss Kathleen terryton right now to celebrate our graphic students hello I'm Kathleen tierriton graphic Communications teacher here at BHS we have recently updated the program offerings for graphic Communications which is part of both the Fine Arts and Career and Technical education departments in order to better reflect the career possibilities and design we continue to refine our classes and curriculum the new courses that ran this year included gay Martin design which you can imagine has been a blast um students have been learning about storytelling and Design Within an ever-growing industry while advancing their design and communication skills we took a field trip thanks to funding provided by the CTE grants to an independent arcade in downtown Aurora not only did they get to play a range of classic and modern arcade video games how cool and yes you can all come next year but they got to learn about how they work and even see the inside of a pinball machine while talking to the arcade technician emerging Technologies also ran for the first time this year which included units of study on user interface design Motion Graphics product design and augmented reality each of these projects offered students a chance to learn more about possible career Pathways related to design the future creative professionals club which I sponsor recently took a trip to learn more about creative professions through local Partnerships in the area 15 students visited Wilson Street Mercantile and Water Street Studios here in town and Rule 29 in Geneva it is so powerful to have these collaborations and Partnerships one of our best supporters is valleys which is an organization based out of waubonsie Community College and helps support the area CTE programs each year values organizes a team-based challenge in design where each school is partnered with professional mentors while they work on a design prompt that culminates in competition the competition itself includes two components A Team Challenge and a portfolio one you guys can come up here now this year our seniors Lucas Rojan and Eric Perkins teamed up to create branding for a fictional record store they were partnered with Gail gaboda the Batavia Park District's graphic designer and Jesse skirty an area freelance graphic designer and college instructor as their mentors are you pulling up some some gorgeousness all right um Lucas and Eric worked on this for about a month you say a month as part of their Graphics internship class which is another one of the classes that has emerged from our kind of re reconstruction um because they were doing independent studies and we want they're they're doing real stuff and so I really wanted on their transcript for it to say internship because that's what they're doing they're working for for people in the world so that was one of our cool course uh changes see I went off script um so uh they worked on this for about a month as part of their Graphics internship during term three and then presented their work along with their individual portfolios to a team of Industry professionals the judges were impressed with their design work the consistency of their brand the connection to historical and contemporary design Trends and their attention to detail competing against teams from four other schools Lucas and Eric were selected as the winners for this year's graphic Communications Team of the Year so much to celebrate as Lucas and Eric continue their education next year in the design field after being part of the graphics program for these past four years and what a four years it was to to study design that was interesting semester in Spring of 2020.
Elizabeth very close to putting that in the ball goes back to Sarah solo she is just going to try to power this thing in she's gonna come all the way around to the right [Music] number 11 a great soccer player big left footer definitely a a next level herself [Music] Jenna always so hard doing a very doing a very good job getting that first pass out to spend a little bit of a challenge for East Longmeadow at times throughout the season this is a good play here got number eight I believe that's illingsworth coming up the right hand side and bringing it into possession getting passed there Eddie Jordan looking for the cut just wasn't open over to Bridget Jordan he's going to try a Dodge move here she's double teamed she gets inside ball comes out of the stick of the stick Sheriff that was a that was up here we go They're gonna bring it up minneton racing down [Music] I won't say though Dylan I agree with you Sarah looks like she's going a little bit slower down the field than what we saw Alaskan past their ball out of bounds should be doing here try to turn the bus [Music] Apostles a little push right there referee right on top of it calls it not sure that you're going the right way for us but uh really good Dodge move there a little face Dodge getting up a little high they keep it going good pass almost snags it stops IT great play there by Kenna Marino picks it up although she passes it into Lily King's thick and then Chuck keeps the ball hustling back Sarah sulo setting up the offense [Music] number 10 karolina Gagnon another really good soccer player do at least a minimum a very high level from the cross gets it again here we go this has been the problem area let's see what can happen here she does bodies picks it up firing down the left-hand side keep on rolling she keeps on trucking don't stop actually actually I think if she had not stopped and turned around I'm not sure what the call was there [Music] oh yeah uh I don't know what the call was there what do you think Dylan she may have stuck out of bounds back oh maybe maybe that's a very good point they really just needed macarini right there to come on over and they would have had her triple teams in the Box miniature against possession let's see if they can do they've actually had a couple of good opportunities because they just missed it or alternatively because Paulie's made a really good save on the doorstep I mean just like the opportunity there we go and that was another good opportunity right there if that catches that block turns and fires it's going to be a really it's going to be a challenge yeah another very long pass right there great grabs right there keeping the stick close now you gotta restart yeah [Music] number nine Nana Calabrese having a a very good sophomore season right there [Music] this is a lot of whistles on the start there it is to uh number three Carolina taking it down the right hand side she's looking for a Dodge over to morno like to see this by Islam Meadow giving everybody a chance to have a touch yeah I could have fired it there there's a good pass to Macaroni and then right and then that really good play more gold one Dylan that's a great passerini Cuts in there for nothing Spartans [Music] foreign [Music] on the right hand side behind to Kennedy Mourinho looking for a cutter out to Addie Jordan moving around to the right gets a little double team ball goes into the stick minute shot grabs it they're chasing it down it's a battle morno picks it up Mourinho hits the ground she's got it she's looking for a Dodge move she's getting double teams she jumps she shoots she passes the ball is going somewhat out of bounds picked up over there by number two Anna mcarini out to number four Angelina trulio Moreno she fires the ball good save [Music] I'm not a bad shot there was open but you gotta you're gonna do that I think you gotta power it in there and you gotta power it down low I'm sure she will flying down the right hand side this is it we got a little opportunity good defense there and a good save normal six and backups and they're going to set up their transition game again I love that pass didn't love that pass right there is what happens and then it just fires in that's yeah that's just the one right there where really that's the one that's going to struggle through so long first pass out from um very very powerful you just can't give her those kind of one-on-one opportunities because with her speed and with her strength she's a threat at any time really no chance for the goalie there four one seven minutes and 41 seconds remaining in the first half time has been flying by here for some unknown reason it seems like the half has gone a lot quicker than some others anybody have any thoughts on that [Music] I pick up there by Moreno she switches over to her left hand passes it up to Bridget Jordan picks it up again going to send it over there to Kasich who's really looking for some to do a Dodge she's got a good hop in her step right now that was a good pass right there morno needed to grab that one from number two macaroni morno was there and had it really needed to catch that one and dump it in now on the offense they're coming down the ball's missed and kicked up back to Holly again safe pass there I really like that good aggressive play by number nine Laura O'Brien but she's gonna go behind on a little penalty given the four yards right there back to number 28 test and all she's been having a great season I I just got a good pass there that's the dangerous one that we've been seeing all season now a little just over the stick good pass there up the number 22 Grace Howard in transition [Music] over to number 23 .
um but it's very interesting you said that it was a particular item here that never went above which was um question 21 um is there any data supporting why it's never moved up is there data as to why yeah [Music] this is the highlighted data but behind each one of these uh uh data points that were canceling the feedback from The Faculty on what they believed or some of the issues that had been working on so they were comment regarding these particular questions that went along with each one of these questions each year and so the work that we continue to continue throughout each year to look at feedback was in trying to put in strategies for the group to make changes and this is the actual data so you can see right here this show s May 11th right here and if I were to scroll through you are right here this car right here where my arrow is if I were to scroll through every single again that's what you'll see that the highest we ever went with this may 2020 139 responses we get 54 .
as our only science teacher Mr callison's lessons are well thought out and meaningful students are actively engaged using Cooperative conversations this year many of his lessons were Hands-On and students were excited about what they were learning it seems like almost every day as a week when I walk down the hallway he steps out of his room and says hey we're going to be doing an activity you may want to come by and get some pictures today so there I am taking pictures when I go in though I'm always really impressed to hear the students using academic language including scientific words that sometimes I don't even understand it feels like I've walked into a Big Bang Theory episode if you ever watch that Charlie has been a positive role model for for all of our students he treats the students with respect kindness and patience the students feel supported and are eager to learn when they're in his class at lunch time he opens his classroom for a as a place for students to just hang out and have lunch the room is often very full our nominations for Teacher of the Year came in and it was no surprise that Mr Callison was voted our teacher of the year one student on the nomination said Mr Callison is a sweet teacher and always greets me with a smile and helps me when I don't understand something his class is also very enjoyable staff and students are very proud that huge oh just to build off of that I think something that we've seen in previous presentations is like an alignment to the board goals and not necessarily just policies but thinking about what our Board of goals are um and what The Graduate profile is and backwards planning from there I think would really help when we're thinking about curriculum and curriculum adoption um they're not necessarily just focusing on the policies I think that would also help I agree all right any other questions comments thank you all right thank you both thank you so much uh next on the agenda is financial Administration monitoring report for April and budgeting monetary monitoring report for May um Dr Lydia back to you thank you madam president members of the board um last business meeting um second Tuesday of last month we brought in or I brought in the second el16 trying to do two things at the same time find that item here that I can share the el16 that based on the calendar that we adopted that you adopted on in on February 14th with policy governance this was scheduled to be presented to you as part of the monitoring reporting for the board and um and you see here two items the next one is el15 which is the budget monitoring report so we are based on the feedback that we received we from the board and even including this item of the K5 science curriculum and adoption what I would like to propose for the board to consider is every item that it's going to be brought for approval on a given month the month before during the study session if there's a presentation or if it's a monitoring report that we need to discuss to bring to be brought here for discussion so that you can actually you know even think of additional questions that you may have after the meeting that you can be sent in my way so that we can respond in that export meeting um so you know I just say that including the science curriculum um we will move the dates on that so that it can be done sooner so that you can have more time to um to to look at it and think about uh implications for the district uh but this financial Administration monitoring reports for April um is as a result of that feedback um we're I am bringing also El 15 for a way to discuss that is not um scheduled to be approved until next month based on the calendar that you approve but I will actually after we discuss it I would actually I would actually like to propose something different from a different date for both as we move forward so I have Doug Moss here and we will start with el16 the financial report for April and um if I may ask a dog to walk us a little bit through this monitoring report and it will open into any questions that you may have about what is in front of you thank you um so el16 we have basically you have the report in front of you and it basically breaks down each of the uh questions that's asked and then our response to that question is on this report here so you know basically we are in compliance our quarterly reports have to be given uh it's state law and so we are in compliance and uh you know we this is something new to all of us so we're all still trying to learn this policy stuff but uh you know we put together our budget last year and uh so in number one it's just basically saying what we appropriated for this coming school year and and the total budget um when you go down to number two you know all all Financial activities are are done from July July to now through March and so that is showing that all Financial transactions to date have been taken care of and everything's paid and revenues have been received to date except for maybe some requests for funds from the Colorado Department Ed you know they're always a month or two behind when we send in our requests so we're always waiting and waiting and waiting for the federal dollars to come in um we then go down and you know it says uh we're following all the all the rules and regs on in debtness you know our cop funds we're paying those uh our bonds our risk fund which is a sub-category of the general fund all of that's uh included in in the indebtedness of the district we settle all of our payroll uh monthly so payroll's done uh the last weekend the month and then all liabilities are paid within five to ten days some are due earlier than that like uh IRS payments uh all the taxes things like that they have to be paid right away so we have no problems there um we we do uh we make sure that we follow all of our reports timely so like our quarterlies as soon as we get everything wrapped up for a month sometimes it it's not a hundred percent accurate as of uh say through this month because some things are still posting and P card payments are being posted back so next month when you get a financial report it'll be all caught up through that month of March okay um we do have to arrange for an audit every year so that's that's a given so I don't even worry about that one we do have to post it and uh we we send it to the Colorado Department of Ed State auditor's office Moody's our bond company uh the municipal Exchange Commission we have to send all the Audits and stuff so we just shoot a file directly to them of the audit and that suffices them and we're in compliance um we're always going after receivables so um like the state we're constantly as the month ends we're shooting them a requests for funds and then we're at their Mercy as to when we receive them so um we we have to maintain uh records that are uh recognized as governmental accounting principles and so everything within our system has to be prepared and ready like our quarterlies or when we do the audit we prepare all that all the financials for the Auditors we give them the documentation they go through it all um we do have all the uh all the financials on the transparency page and so we have to show that within 60 days after after they're done we have to have that posted to our page and and CDE does check that every now and then they'll come back and say uh you're missing something and it's like oh okay so you go back and shoot it in there and be done um uh the we don't fail to publish or uh post or financial condition so that's our audit so we do Post our audit on the transparency page as well um you know we're working on the cost benefit analysis stuff now with the new package that we're waiting to receive they're working on it now so once we get that that'll be that much easier for us to predict and forecast in the future so I'm really looking forward to getting that thing done and here and we're always constantly trying to find new grants um I think you guys probably get bombarded at times by all the requests for this grant that Grant this grant but I I do have to commend this district for doing that because a lot of districts you know they just get the real simple ones and they don't apply for the competitive and I come into the district for that and then you know any loan that we would have to do short-term loan with the state um of course we would have to come to you and do a resolution and all that so and maybe this year we may have to do it because of the the amount of funds that we get late is in April May June and sometimes this this year we were cut real close and finally we got a three million dollar Federal payment I was like thank you so and that that's pretty much all I have on El 16 and so if you have any questions I'd sure be willing to answer if I can okay thank you Mr Moss board members questions comments thank you I really um I'm starting to like part of this policy governance um things like this yeah um especially it makes it very clear the the questions we're asking and how you respond um I do have a couple of wonderings and and questions if you don't mind um one of them was going down um the list here on number two where it says um talking about uh expenditures and um timing I I think it would be helpful and and kind of a learning experience because we all know uh School Finance is a beast but I think it would be helpful for us as a board to know um upcoming deadlines like you you know them but I think it's it's not only adding to our knowledge base but it helps um with transparency because then we know you know next year at this time okay we should be looking for XYZ we should make sure we're asking you or you know making sure that it's on a report like this um let's see the other question I had was around um it well that that also includes number five where we're talking about what needs to be filed um unless we're in school Finance we don't know about all this like I didn't know about Moody's and all of this and so I got on the board I totally understand you know annual things like the kafir and things like that but I think it would be again a learning experience for all of us if we if you were in this reports to say hey um this date this was due we filed it on this date this was due we filed it sure um I did have a question around number seven around um the receivables um totally love and and I will say there has been a huge Mark difference because I know if I don't cash my check for my internet I get an email right away um do you have an aging AR report that you um that your staff has like how how do you um monitor things like that I think is what I'm trying to get through like like if we knew understood the process of how the financial department is monitoring things like this um like on number seven how we track that is we keep a spreadsheet of all of our requests for funds so each month we know exactly how much in expense we did for say July we know in July we need to request funds for that amount and then once we've received the funds we show the date when they were received and that gives us a tracking and then we can track all the other ones by Grant actually so awesome so we we do it by each Grant account number per se and that that's how we track it within our own computer system Excel sorry that's helpful to know um I'll lead a little into that or elaborate a little more my wondering is um I love how these are all tied it goes to number 12 about the ground so I completely appreciate how much work it takes and how many um more grants we've secured as a district because that wasn't happening um I think what would be helpful to me is to know what those are for example we had a huge disappointment um when the 21st century Grant went away we as a board did not know about that until um a week or so and this was before anybody's time here a week or so before that happened but we I think we we don't have that knowledge of what grants are out there and when they're going to end so we don't know when to be asking questions like that um and then it also to me builds upon our first goal of ensuring we have a good Financial standing because we we need to be monitoring all of these programs and contracts that we have and maybe not every single one but big ones I think that has a huge financial tie um but other than that completely loves the reports and I'm like in this policy governance reporting model what I'll do uh yeah yeah what I'll do is I'll get get a report generated for you that'll show every grant that we have the amount when they started and when they end because like we have a ton of like easy grants and I mean it's just like boom boom boom boom I mean there's like five or six and we're tracking them all so I can get that for you that would be awesome thank you to probably just be a separate thing that I can prepare and give to you and remind me on the calendar are these quarterly will we get these quarterly okay yes yeah we have to report quarterly to you so I'll probably like the next well that's the audit but I can still do something like this report just to give it to you as a quarterly update in June even though the quarter's not done maybe in the June meeting I can give you something on that some of it I'm president some of the things and as we go through seeing what works for us in this report um we will add in here I think it's going to be important as we move forward the interpretation of what I think as a superintendent you are asking so that we can get yes that's exactly what we're asking because it may be something different so I want to be able to to provide exactly what you're looking for um so adding that interpretation here will be important but when we talk and I think perfect segue to your question because as um as we think you you receive this quarterly reports that is not necessarily in this format that is going to come as a monitoring report this is the year long report quarterly you will continue getting those as you are um right now and uh but this is a one-time year that says every quarter you received it so we have been in compliance or I as a superintendent have been in compliance with what is expected of me as far as reporting and keeping you informed of the financial reports um that is how I'm interpreting this one but if we if you're interpreting that you're going to receive this format every quarter so every basically two or three months in a board meeting you're gonna receive these documents that is different to um to my thinking so I think this is a good moment to talk about this to see are you going to be expecting this because you received the reports but on your Friday updates on a quarterly basis this document is is me certifying you know last year we have been um compliant or I have been compliant with what you are asking so I want to clarify that and see what would you like to see yeah for me that's helpful because if this is annual I'm curious as to why cute quarter three is where we do this is that under the assumption that quarter four will be more in-depth and it's an annual thing yeah uh perfect question we spoke about this because and this is why we said we I might I will recommend for us to look at this at a different time okay uh for two reasons um so because your question had two two parts to it so my recommendation you'll find is to move it at least one month because that way we can include three full quarters if we do it um in the April meaning the quarter is not quite completed the documents and the reports are not quite finished so it's basically including two quarters plus the two of the previous year uh right which it makes it a little um funny I guess so if we move it at least one month forward meaning rather than bringing it to you in April we bring it at least in May that will include three full quarters the fourth quarter is included in the audience which also happens and it's part of this reporting we've completed an audit so that fourth you get the quarterly as well via the updates that you get um normally and the full report is included in the audit so to your um question is making me think of my proposal do we move it just one month or do we include it until after the audit is completed um because the audit the report we got it in December it's really going to be almost looking at the year before so my recommendation will be two three quarters knowing that the fourth quarter although you get it again in the quarterly updates it will be included in the audience does that make sense yeah I I guess um and this is probably a question directed to our CFO because I think within that reporting we also have to include budget planning for the upcoming year and then the audit typically happens way after I I'm looking for like a year-end versus like like what we're getting three-fourths of the the pitcher and the three-fourths of the pictures of how we have spent the money yeah the planning which is the next one EO 50 uh el15 that is the budgeted in in the planning of it which is scheduled to be in May but it doesn't make make sense yeah correct correct so how would it work best for sure so we're looking at probably doing the budget part of it uh proved in August because the budget will be done we'll actually have you the book I mean what we'll do back exactly what we're going to do like we did last year we'll do a presentation on the preliminary and we'll and we'll get that approved then we'll do the whole budget book and give that to you as number 15 for the budget let me just clarify it's not that you will be approving the budget in August you still approve it in in you know by June 30th right as you know if it's expected by law you will go through that same process the reporting in this document will be accepted by you in August after this that way it will include and the only reason it's in August because it's in July we do not have a meeting right but in the first meeting in August you will receive then this document noting the planning and the budget process that took place though the previous year I I like that better personally and I would love my board members to to fill in only because to me a report is after the fact it's this is what we did and that would give us the full picture for the whole year um because I'm glad you clarified because to me I was reading that this was we would be coming to us quarterly right yeah board members if you have degree or have comments you know I agree because the fiscal year is very different than the annual year and I think that that's where it becomes confusing for a lot of us that are used to looking at things annually as opposed to looking at it from the fiscal perspective so of course it makes sense that whatever you spent the previous school year is very different than what you spent the previous calendar year and so because the school year is more of the it's part of the fiscal year as opposed to the actual calendar year so it's good to actually call that out because I think a lot of people especially are viewing audience probably will be very confused as to why we're asking these questions when it comes to the budget just to clarify it's our fiscal year goes from July right August July 1st through June 30th yes there you go yep so yeah it's very weird I'm not the numbers person so thank you for catching all of that and Mr musk do you think that's um workable or feasible because I know end of year is busy time for all all accountants so we're including like budgeting for the next year uh reporting yeah like are you does that work in your world okay that works okay but then I clarify yeah to hear to see if I I understood in my interpretation so el15 which is the budgeting and the planning right which is supposed to come um in May based on the calendar it's going to be moved to August because that will be in it it's actually posted up here what is the budgeted here that will come in August rather than in May that is correct because that's going to be El er15 is going to be the budget correct so you approve the budget by June the report you get it in August correct correct yes so that is one el16 which is the quarterly updates that you just heard that do you want how do you want to ask you how do you want it quarterly broken up first though okay so then you're gonna look at then we'll be looking at April June in May in May right so we're going to get it like that so the physical one you want in August which is the l16 and El 15 will do quarterly like we have been May until April right correct so we'll push it yes a month but that will not include the last quarter because we are not completed but you're going to give us the whole order at on in August the whole quarter for the physical year which will go from June 1st to the the whole physical year of the budget and the planning on August 7th that we've already approved correct we'll see that then and uh the the other one right and then the last quarter one will be done in probably December November whenever we get the audit that would be our foreign yeah things because we just we just did that yeah 15 is what you have here on the on the screen here can you make that a little bigger maybe um Ramona please um this is the budget to end the planning and that is you know you go through the process approve the budget by June 30th as it's required by law and then we prepare the report for you to accept my monitoring reporting to you to accept it in August and that monitoring report will basically said this is what we followed for you to complete for the planning and for the approval of the budget and I am in compliance based on what you're expecting that is el15 the budgeting in the planning of it that's why and this is based on this calendar that you approved in February it's it's coming next month but we're not even we're not even ready because the process has not been completed until you approve it in June right so so this is what we're asking to push in August year 15.
this is the list one of the students that helped put that together is Joaquin he's back there in the back [Applause] so any of your schools that want a veteran to come in and talk about their lives and what we did and what how it what you're learning in school relates to the real world call us Master Sergeant Darlene Tryon I have five combat tours and I have three veterans that I've raised on my own one is currently now in the air no maybe in the Navy I have to remember he was actually in the Air Force first and then he went got out and got his um commission and went back in and now as an officer in the Navy so I want each of you parents to realize that what you do today has a direct influence on every student's lives that you touch each and every day and what Jack would say is to the students is to stay in school learn as much as you can because our country is the greatest country of all right or wrong she's still our country so Jack was my my person [Applause] um I met Jack by accident one of my friends was supposed to take him to the VA in 2017 and she wasn't able to go and said do you want to take him and I said sure and and it was I mean I basically adopted a grandfather at that point and he was such an incredible man he actually spoke I think it was about 800 kids at Highland high before they went to the band went to Pearl Harbor and then he came again and talked to my class but um yeah well let's just say speaking of math I'm really bad at estimating okay because I saw the boxes up I'm like that's not that many there were a lot so basically the kids worked on opening these they used spreadsheets and so they learned how to do spreadsheets they recorded what the in what the information was like who it was from who it was sent from but then they also recorded um any like information or personal information like if they had if someone said like my dad was in World War II or whatever they wrote all that stuff down so that Jack didn't have to look at all the cards he could at least go through it and um they did this while we when they had free time or they did it while I was reading a book out loud and they're over there ripping envelopes open and you know putting things in and like I said Joaquin is one of my kids that was in my class last year it took us two class sessions like last year and this year to get it finished and we finished just before Jack's birthday he was born um December 13th um just six days after Pearl Harbor he He Turned 20 over in Pearl Harbor he was there when it was attacked and just an incredible story um I kind of thought he was going to live forever and um but just such a legacy and such a way of touching lives um and it's just it was an honor to be part of that and um and for my students to see it they would get so excited when kids like hey somebody sent him some sand for me with Jima and somebody else was like are we supposed to you know what what is this you know and they were holding up flag like the stars from flags that were cut out and sent in or just it was just really exciting for the kids to see I mean they would get we got things from president Trump we got something from President Biden we've got the kids got things from every one of the national and St and State representatives and senators and and the kids are like oh look at this one you know and so we had a pile of these are the really important ones and and then if it came with a gift card or money that went in the important pile because I needed to make sure to get it to Jack and the kids were just so amazing and so if we could I would love to give a round of applause oh and guess what one of my other kids just tippy-toed into the back probably because he wants ice cream afterwards but let's not go there and this is Julian so this was my class this year and that was my class from last year so if we can give a hand to the boys I would really appreciate that too foreign come on up let's get a picture with the Ally Thompson Senior Captain Bridget Jordan here it comes they've got it that's the play right there seven to two to five seven to two to four actually it looks like that was number four Angelina Trulia with the goal number two macarini on the assist and really Bridget Jordan if you could give out two assists Bridget Jordan would have got one Defender had a slide to cover as soon as she slid past it down below beneath the goal and trulio had an open net not really much the goal he could do their great play buddy last time had to leave the half East Longmeadow came out really flat looks like coach really got onto room and they've come out ready to play and firing in almost also control the game right control there draw taken by Kennedy Mourinho pickled by Ollie Thompson Megan morno running down the field Fields dipping not jumping Jordan opened back to porno setting this up not sure what they're doing here setting up a Dodge she re-dodges she goes through she's going around this is going to be a shot pulse Sidewinder picks it up again a good shot there from a low angle good save to the top to senior Bridget Jordan over to number three with Kasich really I think one of the best Dodgers on the team touch there by morno she's coming around there's three people there she does the right thing pulls it back out looking for a cutter still moving there dude that was fired pretty hard as well but it goes wide open a lot of traffic cam opens this up there we're going to get a penalty on minitron and it looks like Julio is going to get another opportunity on an 18 shot four minutes and 55 seconds the clock is still running 52-51 [Music] moving along I think we're gonna see a run-in here referee getting people set and it is and she runs and it goes over the top as it goes Julio having a night eight meter goal he's one Meadow in the league by Angelina trulio [Music] [Applause] [Music] yeah I don't think much has to change out yeah I think I think you're you know you're right Dylan I mean obviously went down four five one or something maybe maybe more you've got to score goals and see if they can kind of work it around and find an opening because early on they had some goals and just weren't catching it when they were the open space so I think those opportunities will present themselves if they can actually get into the offensive zone but it all starts with a draw control win and they are not going to get it number three in case it fights to get that control for each one oh that's a great dish right there I mean what what a fast Target from Bridget Jordan to Caroline lukasik who drives it into the back of the neck great goal seven to one Bridget to Carolina By Carolyn mccase assisted by Bridget Jordan I mean I'm not gonna right there was one of the most accurate Carolina cutting down the right hand side Pastor Defender with her back to her in Jordan Bridget Jordan has seen right on her great pass redraw right there yeah great Point Dylan you're really you're really seeing you know from up here you're really seeing the field and seeing what you're seeing and really sensitive opinion what's happening out there Kennedy Marino taking a draw here casing and Thompson won by minitra number six great job there boxing out at least one little gets it a little bit of a short pass there but Addie Jordan picks it up she's gonna fire down sprinting a little Dodge loses it not sure if that was a penalty but we'll take the call right there Jordan gonna pick it up again and set the East Longmeadow offense up but it looks like a pretty good shelf and not in made a little of the post but it didn't too far down and go in it did bar down and stayed out with a good look there by Jordan they left her alone and she took it got it here it looks like we're gonna restart minor penalty there this is like they're firing away number 10.
it was 36 developing 31 percent were providing 2300 but that 36 percent development that was one of the highest we'd ever been and by the way that was in the year that we went out so this was May 2020. this survey May 2020 this was taken while we were out of the position so this was taken two months after we went out okay and that so there are some things you probably could look at and say what why would what would essentially cause that to strike higher a little bit higher in that year you know there's a lot of anecdotal that we could probably say but there was a lot of communication and transparency with respect to that's not as well while we were out however when we look from 2020 to 2021 we dropped significantly 50 but then in 2022 we came back up to 47 percent so this is the number again what we would really like is we'd like to see that one get higher than that you know 54 55 would like to like to and and you know it's just not just I'm not talking about just you enjoy it jumps about us as a staff so these These are surveys that's done to the staff or the community so is um right what's the question 25 you asked you asked is the strategic plan actually have done a lot of focus around questions and that was supervision evaluation are tied to results and promote the growth and development of all staff ing the principal so as I scroll across this you'll see that went from red to Yellow to Green came back down for a couple of years however in 2022 he had come back up to so we felt that we are now in a position with that one but now we really wanted to focus out like we had ever gone to that next time and so that's why we chose to focus okay that does is the total percentage of providers at all so in the same on the same survey we get a more response on certain questions than we do in other questions is that more accurate to say can you get more response yeah on different questions are answering all questions each year correct so from year to year the number of responses okay so in May of 2022 130 people um 20 21 121 respond so it depends you know these numbers may change up top as to how many responses Vivian can I just briefly see on question 21 um because I'm seeing on the data we're going um remind me again um the data for 2021 and 2022.
with her tonight is her mother Rina student teachers her bestie Cecilia her assistant principal Mr Rob Velasco and a room full of good friends that she's worked with over the years as a fellow Bruin I take pride in her accomplishments this year seeing the benefit of encouragement and support shown to her being passed on to student teachers she has worked with her colleagues and her students has been a blessing Esther has exhibited the Pinnacle of Excellence competitive greatness when the times have been tough she has brought her a game to Azusa and inspired her colleagues and students she has gone above and beyond to develop her curriculum and pedagogy to ensure student engagement the example she is setting this year is a path for many to follow in the midst of this transition and difficult return from the pandemic Miss compost ball has demonstrated competitive greatness and developing a new course called race and gender in U.S history with her peers from Azusa and Gladstone not only is she reimagining U.S history content but she is also in the midst of reimagining teaching strategies that put student voice and choice front and center in the classroom her commitment to equity is noticeable and makes a difference for kids in addition to her professional learning and leading in the ethnic studies area Esther is also a part of azusa's pilot group of teachers working with High-Tech high in San Diego to develop project-based learning experiences and teaching practices we are headed there in two days and Esther is ready with student work samples and a joy for learning to share with our peers from around the state Beyond curriculum development Miss compostball exhibits the competitive spirit in the example that she sets for her student teachers who she has mentored this year Lego has recognized the quality of her work developing new talent in the social science teachers at Azusa this year she has shown me the evaluations from professors who have observed her student teachers and they are exemplary not goes to the quality of work that Esther has done this year her Protege are learning the right way to engage students with the right pedagogy in the service of our students at Azusa High School the future is bright thanks to Esther's work with these members of the next generation of teachers in California above all Esther's greatness is found in the manner in which she seeks to listen and nurture student agency in her classroom she understands the importance of connections and community she cares deeply about her students and and keeps up with their lives After High School she frequently has alumni in a room encouraging her students to persist and make it to college these types of experiences do not show up in the pacing guide but she makes time so that all students are motivated to reach their potential ultimately this year has been a test for all of us on all of her fellow teachers of the year in Azusa unified life has not been easy for students teachers families anywhere but Esther has not been discouraged by hardship she has demonstrated resilience and determination and the future is bright next to Esther Campos ball and evening board uh president Beau board members superintendent Ortega cabinet members members of the audience and a big congrats congratulations to my fellow teachers of the year for their respective School sites after listening to all the speeches made by our um principles on behalf of their teachers on this you know at their sites I am truly humbled this recognition I'd like to begin by sharing a story of an international student who was brought to this country at the age of eight and entered School in California as a third grader due to age prior to this move the student was a model student whose parents were told was a Bright Child as the student continued their education in this country the student began to display a learning deficit it is important to note that this learning deficit was a result of only having attended three months of second grade in their native country and their English language skills were non-existent when they started school here as the student progressed through our education system the learning Gap continued to grow it wasn't because a student wasn't able to learn it was because the older they got the more learning they were having to make up the students struggled to catch up in K-8 but in high school this student became English fluent or fluent English proficient and learning became easier for them however it wasn't without years of struggle and ridicule that often made them feel dumb once in high school the student's self-confidence grew and it was in part to some teachers who took and invested interest in the students education thanks to these teachers the teacher that you recognize tonight as ausd teacher of the year can share her experiences with all her students having gone through these experiences has made me more aware of my students with learning gaps in my classroom I use teaching methods and strategies to help close that Gap I am a firm believer in project-based learning as I have witnessed students of all learning levels have those aha moments and understand the content in summer of 2021 ausd offered High School teachers the opportunity to begin ethnic studies training and course development for classes to be taught at Azusa in Gladstone High Schools one of the greatest accomplishments in my career is ethnic studies U.S history course that I have co-written with my social science colleagues this course offers students U.S history knowledge taught through the ethnic studies lens and gives teachers the ability to implement Community circles and establish in the establishment of the community of community in our classrooms students in my class in my classes have a safe space where they feel love connection to community empowerment and have a voice I have learned through my ethnic studies training that Community is the heart of all learning Community will be essential next year as school mergers will be in place and more than ever we will need to we we will need that feeling of acceptance and inclusion within our school sites and Beyond in closing I would be remiss if I didn't acknowledge a few people that have made a difference in my career Scott Magnuson Corey James inside of Valdez for taking a chance on me Sam Perdomo where are you Sam Perdomo for your assistance in helping me pass my dreaded math cset Chris Medina my ausd bits of Mentor for helping me make the transition into teaching as smooth as possible and being an excellent role model in this profession make Savella where are you where is she oh there you are okay um for guiding me on how to be a teacher Avid kid to all my colleagues and admin teams who have supported me all these years I couldn't have done it without you say you know I couldn't have done it without you lastly to my family especially my parents for teaching me that hard work pays off in the end mommy gracias and to my sons who gave up many nights with moms so I could further my education but most of all thank you to my students past present and future and my student teachers My Hope Is that I have taught you or will teach you not only the lessons from the textbooks but lessons of life and the importance of community you my students matter you my students have a voice you my students don't let anyone tell you that you can't because you can see SE puede thank you one more big round of applause for Esther Campbell's have any input and we're like yeah we want to congratulate you we want to you know yeah yeah go forward yes okay 7.0 okay welcome back everyone thank you so much for joining us for our lovely celebration of excellence and dedication we're going to continue our regular meeting with item 7.1 public comment on agenda or non-agenda items and hope do we have any blue cards we'll begin public comment with Lori Ray not on the red light needs to be on good evening Dr Bo on board and cabinet my name is Lori Ray and I am the chapter president of csca Azusa chapter 299 I am here tonight to follow up on an email that I had sent all of you asking to rescind the layoff notices and retain the two athletic peas for Gladstone Middle School as stated in the email the need for these positions is especially strong during this time of transition when staff and students are consolidating into a single Middle School as always student safety is our main concern athletic PE AIDS are essential as they are as a monitor and secure locker rooms to protect against safety hazards they also help prevent property damage equipment loss student fights in bullying my first vice president Patricia Patricia Sanchez and I visited all three of the current middle schools the locker rooms and the surrounding areas we also visited Gladstone High School campus at the current Middle School's site the locker rooms are small and close in proximity to the basketball courts and Fields allowing for monitoring by a PE teacher and that's in the graphic that my gave you however the layout of Gladstone Middle School is much different first Gladstone locker rooms are considerably larger and have many areas that cannot be easily viewed such as the enclosed shower stalls and the restroom areas and some other areas in there without proper monitoring of these areas there is potential for bullying fights loss of property graffiti and other damage to the school facilities although we have been told there will be a teacher president in the locker room PE teachers will be busy getting their students out to the fields and to the gym for a class they will not be able to adequately monitor all the areas on their own further the position of the locker rooms and the fields at Gladstone middle schools is much different than that of the current middle schools at Gladstone the locker rooms cannot be viewed from the fields if a class is in the gym there's no way for a teacher that that a teacher can keep track of who goes in and or in and out of the locker rooms again this creates student safety issue as it allows for situations where students can access the locker rooms unattended among the many duties of the athletic peas is helping students cleaning up after class dust them off the gym floor and wet mop it before games and events maintaining sports equipment issuing lockers and combinations issuing and selling PE uniforms washing sports uniforms setting up sports equipment for events and providing areas access excuse me to visiting teams I would like again to emphasize the importance of retaining our athletic PE AIDS above all the other reasons described these employees are invaluable in supporting the safety of our students I ask that you please reconsider laying off such vital members we only have one chance to get this right let's be sure we do thank you very much thank you Miss Ray Jenny armas good evening Dr Beau school board members and District dignitaries my name is Jenny armas I am the ASB High School ASB Clerk and I am here tonight to discuss agenda item class of Azusa High School will have a spectacular fireworks display at their commencement thank you foreign Ratcliffe good evening superintendent Ortega board president Dr Bowl board vice president Yolanda Pena board member Sandra Benavides and board member uh Adrian Greer and board clerk Gabriella arianes and cabinet my name is trimo Ratcliffe and I am a field representative for just us for meeting um so that you guys can learn more about our services as well and before I conclude as well I would like to thank you guys as well for tonight um seeing all the amazing teachers of the year uh being recognized and this is uh very Monumental because I wouldn't be here today if it wasn't for my teachers in my school district I'm from Pomona Unified School District um you know I was born in Pomona and raised in Pomona and if it wasn't for my teachers I would not number one I've graduated and have been successful where I'm at today uh to this day I still go back to visit a lot of my my teachers at their school sites to provide mentoring to students that many of the teachers may not give the enough love and care to because they have a classroom full of students of 30 to 40.
yo 16 is the quarters and how we're spending our money and use in our money which is right now but even if we push it in May it's only going to have three quarters of this year because we have not completed the last quarter of the year El 16 will be presented quarter one quarter two quarter three and then quarter four will be the annual it will be divided with the audit in December okay right so in December you're going to be looking at the last quarter of the month in the report but you will still continue receiving the quarterly updates in the Friday updates the documentation in the Friday updates when when are we looking at getting the annual the um because the audit comes much after the the school year so what are we getting near the school and so you want to see the fourth quarter of the year of last year so that then I could put something together on a fourth quarter after accruals and and payables are done it won't be audited but it'll be close to what it would look like yeah I think that would be helpful or at the very least for if we adjust the Q3 policy El 16 report to include year per year-end projections and then I hate to add another report but something that would shorten this so it's not well what we could do is make both reports that's what I'm thinking for budget and for quarterlies and make that both of them in August and that'll give me time to do something with July it'll be close because we're still doing payables and things like that that's why it's unaudited but at least it'll give us a pretty good idea where we stood throughout the year I think that totally helpful yeah and then we'll get the audit in November December time frame and that'll be the true up yeah okay perfect so we will move both that's exactly what I was thinking the only way for us to include the last quarter quite not completed yet but you know pretty close will be if we push both el16 and EO 15 to August it would probably be helpful too to do it as the work session not a actual business meeting yes because that'll give me another couple weeks to get right wrapped up so we presented in the session as we are doing now and then you will accept it um August in September that first meeting in September yeah that makes more sense okay okay and it's going to be once a year the quarters you continue receiving it as you are right now but it's one monitoring including all four yeah okay okay I'm good with that all right perfect so we're gonna summarize that and add the interpretation piece in here uh so that we are clear on that and we'll see if that works for you and if not we'll you know bring it back and say let's tweak it wherever let's take it wherever we need to tweak it the one in August I just don't want to have like 100 questions for them when we know it's not final yet even if it's off a little bit because that's like I said that's the whole thing is is the final like you can give us the best numbers you can but in finance something can always change and I just don't want to be like oh my god well what about this and then we see the final that wasn't on this one you have to understand until it's audited until it's a final you can show it to us 100 times it will change I just want to make sure you'll have something that's the biggest thing like in finance like until we get those paid until we get that stuff done it's not going to be the final I just want to make sure if we're having to see it then because you want to see that understand that it it possible it may change right I just want to make sure those final numbers yeah I completely understand I think for me um it allows closer budget monitoring because we all know in zero-based budgeting everybody does this end of the year I have a bucket of money let me spend it and I just I think it would it would behooves us to understand what are our needs are we allocating the resources and we're not just willingly spending money because we have it um and and I just I think it gives us closer Financial oversight even though we don't know the exact numbers we should have a pretty good idea um and to be fair in into Mr amador's Point what you're receiving here is not audited either because this is still within the year right so it's just it's not going to be too different then but because it's the last one there might be yeah it's a good clarification thing oh yeah sorry I know you guys hate numbers but this is where this is where I get ribbed up [Laughter] okay I think there's another one still right with more numbers yeah well no actually that was um el15 that although is is due now but we do not have anything to report because this is about the budget so it was it really was not you know this no the beautiful thing that this is what we're going to be doing with this monitoring reports is it working at this time is it working thank you madam president thank you um and so that confused me a little next up is the quarterly Financial update we're going to walk through this or what we can either walk through it or you guys take a look at it uh if you have questions this is a different version because CDE sent out a new template and I wanted to test it out so this is something new it uh take a look at it I don't want to bore you to death but take a look it'll show you exactly what was spent third quarter on the left side and then it shows you year to date what is spent year to date to budget or revenues received and then it shows third quarter last year where we were at as a district as well so it's kind of different than what you've been seeing but I just wanted to to give you this one and say give me some feedback if you like it great if you don't it's not good enough we can go back to some of the other ones so whatever you guys think um I personally love the consolidation like I hate I always used to hate having multiple Excel sheets because you had to report one way to one person and Report another so to me if if this fits your needs and and you like it I love it um I going through there the the red numbers really throw me off but Red's like a No-No color and accounting so I'm wondering since this is quarterly is it are you able to speak towards those or do you prefer that we submit questions like how how do we what what is shown is they actually spent more this quarter compared to what the actual budget shows they're still in compliance if you look over on on the right side there's a couple of them that they've overspent but those were um like three million dollars that we've paid for Subs this year um that who knew that was going to happen uh just things that come up that throw things out of whack elpa we didn't receive as much help of funds this year compared to previous years so we're out of whack a little bit in Elba my biggest thing is I look at what the totals are at the bottom okay we're at 76 percent right where we should be I'm happy with that okay that's super helpful yeah because there there were some where I was going to ask you if it's the line items or do we just it's one bulk fund and that's what we worry about and you work your magic okay yeah one place that we may have been budgeted that it was not used as much to cover for this so I I think I'm more worried about the bottom line because I know there's going to be areas that will go over it just happens so as long as we stay under budget at the end I'm happy if not I'm gonna have to come to you and say well we need to do a supplemental budget which we will have to come to you in June for a supplemental for the capital reserve fund okay glad you touched on that because that's where my question lied was Capital because they know we're doing a lot of that work my second question was around um how it was the Student Activity fund so that one um that one I guess I'm just wondering um if you can help me understand this fund because we have Student Activity Revenue um is that fees because in third quarter we had zero activity for quarter three um this is Page correct so so there was no money deposited in that quarter yet so and is that because are those the fees that are that are charged oh the activity fund is basically it's not even our responsibility that is each of the schools have their own accounts okay and they track their own fund stuff through that now it does hit our books and we monitor have to monitor that okay and so yeah to me I hate fund 23 because it's not our money it's the students who went out and raised the money or you know sold candy bars or whatever so it's the kid to me it's the kids money it's not it's not District money and does each school's students have a say in where PTO yeah ptos do a lot of it they do a lot of the raising uh some of the some of them have different accounts broken out within their activity funds so maybe it's for a reading club or something like that so they'll raise their own funds and then I don't know if the kids have a say how the funds are spent but it's that sponsor or the principal would take care of that fund so fund 23 is at a school is your stuff from them and you can find the student body cam for things for it like to pay for a field trip stuff like that so it's a fun that is on here that we look at but it's not a fund that we control it's not a fun that we have that's everything that comes in through the schools it's a it's a fun that we have to have but the schools control that fund because it's a fundraising fund so it's it's going to be all your stuff that PTO has so like when we were decided Temple camp and they had that money in there they get to choose what they want to do with it and it's the families or the people there I don't think the students have a say unless the parents are like oh well my student wants this so I want to do this or I want to run this but it's all the stuff that they raise at the schools that's their fun and their money to spend how they kind of want the that said are set forth by their ppos so it's not yeah it wouldn't be a fun like we can see it on here and if there's money in here usually you'll see those funds that'll come in mostly in the fourth quarter because that's after a c Mass so that's when we have all of our field trips scheduled all of our events for continuation then buying cakes then buying this so that's easier four quarters where we see a lot of that money spent are deposited because that's when they use it because around that time where my question was I guess because I know um Dr Lydia has been working really hard about field trip things like that I want to make sure it works I mean what we should be funding for our students and not we need the pto's importance for everything and I'm thinking things like and that would be part of the part that's part of the school budget and the principle to allocate those funds so we give the school a budget that does have those built in but a lot of those other phones they are the ones that's the thing right we need to look at them and right and allocate right you would have to book it would be perfect so all that those funds are allocated to the principal to this side whether they go on this or what they're doing so that's them to say oh Kindergarten is going to have a field trip first grade everyone should have a field trip at least one a year that's budgeted into their budget at the school budget level that's good but I think that's definitely need to know like I'll give an example I was surprised and I appreciate their generosity but they gave um a grant to one of our schools so for a field trip yeah I just want to her which we are ensuring that we're allocating the resources where they're needed for each role without having to build mine items by buying items like I just wanted to understand that yeah that fund is not a fun that we would have to be controlled by PTO or whoever controls that one correct it's multiple accounts yes and if I may add to your question uh because academics and we're working with um now in the planning for title one so ensuring that that Equitable offering is provided to all children so ensuring that there's a minimum field trips either by a semester or a year for each grade level These funds can be used above and beyond that which is perfectly fine but we do not want for the schools to think that they have to use this for those minimum um field trips let's um in expectation so we're working with our schools because yes it is based on um as it is right now a principal um uh what is the word that I'm looking at uh decision right the autonomy for that but what we're setting up is that basic expectations of what is the minimum above and beyond um that's perfect but every every child should have access to as a minimum one field trip a year as a minimum in uh the title one and title two fun the title one obviously into Title One arms yeah are videos for that any further questions than anybody else so for clarification this is the quarterly update that there will be moving forward receiving rather than the other formatting so this is the quarterly update that you that you get in in the Friday updates that's right all right all right all right thank you well if there's no further questions or comments agenda is honor president thank you members of the board and we do have some individuals here from our staff um uh we you did see this presentation before so I'm not going to go over it um but it is here just for your easy reference in the public but when we had this ref this uh presentation where we had this presentation um then you wanted to hear a little bit more of the initiatives and the objectives or maybe some of the strategies that we worked on so we have here Sarah from tntp who has actually helped us tntb has helped us facilitate and instructor the process that started in November so it's actually you know within the six months even today actually we start a little early than that but uh the first meeting happened in November and we also have here Mr silac he is one of the secondary the secondary principal that attended every single session um principal Luciana also attend that she was not able to come here today and we also have Jason malmberg from um representing not only labor but also you know one of the teachers who attended so um when you the feedback was rather than go going in in chunks of let's talk about one each one of the priorities and objectives at once we want to hear them all and talk about them all so it's so much that the format that I would like to propose if you're okay with that because we could barely uh very easy to tweak it so I'm gonna get your feedback on how you prefer it prefer for a super Senate uh we can very quickly move the tables and have three stations in each one of the stations um we're gonna we can take turns if we finish you know 15-20 minutes each there will be a little um about an hour for this process and we can be looking at the three main priorities one of them is the instructional programming that our students receive or that we're proposing for them the second area will be human um Human Resources how we are recruiting retaining supporting high quality professionals and the other one will be um the academics portion of it so one is um the programs but a different one is the delivery of the instructions so I we have a choice given the time we have we can do three sessions where we you know you will split and spend about 20 minutes uh in each with a facilitator looking at under each one what would be the objectives and initiatives which is what you wanted the feedback you wanted to hear last time or we can do one session everybody during 20 minutes we look at it and then we open it for even less than 20 minutes I would say um share the documents um you can look at the initiatives and the objectives that we have and then we can we can have a group discussion at least in one of the areas and then we bring one area each time so it's up for you to decide because we can do both but I know it's it's much later than what we expected so you tell me you tell me how how would you like to um go over this thank you Dr Lydia um I'll let my board members chime in I think for me um it's always hard to receive information to look at and then to meet with somebody and have them tell me it and then to be able to provide any good feedback so I would prefer the latter that we we review it and then ask questions um or any other format I'm I'm open to suggestions um I will say also really quickly this might change a lot of things um to me I've I've been on the outside of all of the strategic planning which it's it's taken so long so thank you to everyone that's participated and contributed I I think for me um I I'm missing the student voice in this I'm missing the community voice I would I would love if we took a more deliberate approach to getting feedback on this and I don't know what that would look like like maybe it starts with us doing this this first iteration and then providing our feedback and then move on to others but I just I I think the the best plans are put forth when they're done in a collaborative way and while we've had collaboration in the group that's participated in it other than the um feedback about the goals I don't know that we have solicited feedback from the the broader Community we yeah we have so so and I don't know Sarah if you want to jump in and share a little bit of how that was done um we did uh there were about as you know the eight sessions of the Cadre which was about 36 individuals but that included members of every of the groups that you mentioned and in between um students the feedback was gathered differently because since this was during the day we didn't pull students during the day um yeah but um other than than during that but in between the sessions and I know um director Zubia was part of this in between the sessions it was basically homework for lack of a better term from each member to go in and share that with their peers so principal to principal um you know there were all members of all owners of the community and it was brought back the following the following meetings so the collaboration it is not collaboration only in within this 36.
those bets good evening Dr McCord president wood governing board members um as soon as it comes up I will begin sharing the presentation I wanted to mention that there are three separate files attached to tonight's monthly report so we've very much streamlined the quarterly financial report and are just sharing uh two of the grids with you this evening just to facilitate understanding and avoid any confusion however the entire quarterly report that we have provided to you each quarter has been posted to the agenda item so just for your information okay so I'm not are you gonna help me thank you that was the problem they had to verify my security we have to do that every day it failed okay so it's not even giving me a sorry foreign my security before I come in it was short and sweet today too I'm sorry yeah that's true come on Sheila not you too great thank you Robert finned out directly connect thanks where do I where do I point no it's not gonna work [Laughter] there we go okay so as as usual these are the grids that we are sharing this evening District operating funds the Federal grant funds other funds both bond funds that are available we are completing the 2015 Bond spend and then the 2019 Authority and then just a couple of slides regarding the third quarter financial report if you can just go ahead and drive for me um Robert that would be helpful thank you so this is the district operating funds grid just wanted to point out that next week you will be approving the final budget revision for the current fiscal year so you can see that we've added a column that's the pending budget revision so we are comparing or subtracting the year-to-date expended encumbered from that new pending budget we're going through the process right now of verifying all the new revenues updating many of our revenues are impacted by our current year student counts so we are updating all those figures and accounting for all of our cash balances as well to ensure that we have an accurate budget for the final budget revision that you will be approving next week note that there have been very limited changes to the maintenance and operations ending fund balance as well as the unrestricted Capital outlay ending fund balance from last month and note that that 12.5 million dollars of available resources in the maintenance and operations fund represents about that four percent fund balance Target that we've been working on over the last couple of years so um and go ahead to the next one uh Robert thank you this is the Federal grant fund's uh opted to keep the two Grant funds that are that have been called back so to speak uh based on technical issues at the governor's office however just a reminder that we have applied for a replacement Grant to be able to recoup the dollars lost in these two funds hoping to hear soon about whether our application has been accepted or not we're hoping to use that that new Grant to fund the final retention stipend that's due to be paid on the 6th of June so any questions on that okay great go to the next two slides then then other funds the only reason that we're including this grid is because of the employee benefit trust please note that at the bottom as an action item later today you are being asked to approve the recommendation from the employee benefit trust committee as well as the employee benefit trust board to award two premium holidays for fiscal 2024 again as a compensation increase to all of our employees foreign and then the next grid and then the bond fund fun fund 630 so just for clarity uh fund 6 30 is the 2019 Authority so the approval by the electorate in November of 2019.

present you all to the board tonight in celebration and recognition of your upcoming retirement we wish you all the best and whatever this next chapter brings for you we also know there happens to be another retirement in the room and that is someone from our Jack as well but we do have a few more meetings with Dr Hitchens so our message to her will be forthcoming in the months ahead so at this time I'd like to thank the retirees for um coming tonight and congratulations on your retirement and [Applause] but a change for them in our district as well and our next celebratory and congratulatory moment is with our past board members um who have either stayed like Chris or for Aaron and Kathy as well uh so oh Aaron's here yay thanks Aaron so Aaron Chris and Kathy uh both the Bea investment would like to thank you for your service and to the community the staff of BPS 101 but most importantly to the students of BPS the role in time commitment of a board member is at times demanding overwhelming and frustrating but at the same time can be rewarding and lightning and gratifying in year 10 you're on the board you've celebrated District district and student successes you've mourned the loss of staff and students alike and you two had to find it within yourselves and how best to navigate a worldwide pandemic as members of our Board of Education a thank you is nowhere near enough to acknowledge the time and dedication that you all put into your role as board members but please know we all truly do thank you for your time and service to BPS and we wish you well in whatever and wherever the road of Life takes you next ly to our newly elected board members Raquel Rob and Danielle congratulations your heart and drive paired with the experience and Leadership of RJ Craig Sue and Aaron will help you become a cohesive and transformative voice in working with all district stakeholders for our ultimate goal the ultimate and absolute best educational experiences and opportunities for the children of Batavia combine this with the arrival of Tom Kim as our next superintendent there truly is a New Day Dawning in BPS and just as this portion of the board meeting is called BPS Partners working together we have the collective responsibility to help build back trust through transparency and collaboration change is never easy but more often than not the results of those changes turn out better than we even anticipated we anticipate a great working relationship with this new board and our new superintendent as BPS moves forward into this next new chapter again to our retirees enjoy your retirement you've dedicated your lives to your students their families your colleagues and your District now it's time for yourselves once again congratulations to all of those making a life change in the very near future thank you [Applause] okay we have some action items and that would be to elect we have four officers on the board and three of them are elected positions so we'll be doing that right now and um the first position that we need to fill is the role of the president the most obvious role would be the per the their most obvious thing that you would see the president do would be to run the board meetings they look over the agenda and there is a whole host of responsibilities that are listed in the board policy so at this time I would like to open nominations for the office of presidents so if you would like to nominate someone you can nominate yourself or someone else I'll take those names I would like to nominate Craig Meadows for president a second pet so I will take any nominations for the office of President is there are there any other nominations okay the nomination window has closed and seeing that Craig Meadows is the only candidate nominated for the office of President um I declare Craig Meadows as the president of the Board of Education you want to swap out your name wait there well but Rob can stay there one of your rules is to um we'll talk tomorrow but you have to figure out where everybody sets up here so that's one of your jobs open to suggestions all right I'm gonna sit here all right we also have the position the next position that we will elect is vice president and um vice president steps in should the president be absent and at a few other roles in the policy as well so I will open up the window for nominations um for vice presidents so if anyone would like to nominate themselves or someone else I would like to hear their names I would like to nominate Mr Aaron kilburg for vice president I'll suck with that are there any other nominations all right we will close that nomination window s um seeing that Aaron kilburg is the only candidate that um was nominated for office of Vice President I declare Aaron kilburg as the vice president of the Board of Education and then we have one more um position and that is the board secretary again the responsibilities are listed in board policy make sure that all the documents are prepared uh is the official signer of the board decisions that are made so I would Now open up nominations for the office of secretary would anybody like to nominate anyone or themselves for the office of secretary I would like to nominate Sue lock board secretary are there any other nominations all right the window has closed so seeing that sulak is the only candidate nominated for the office of secretary I declare sulak as the secretary of the Board of Education Joy all right there's one more officer in Mr President is it okay if I keep going or I have that okay um because I wasn't sure who it is so I do have uh notes oh no no the treasure is is a nomination not a um no I was saying for the president I do have notes if you want to take off in a meeting at this point um so the position of the Treasure of the board is an official officer but it has some very specific qualifications they have to have the ability to compile monthly reports and they have to be properly bonded and the treasure um the the board can appoint a non-board member for the office of treasure and this board has always appointed the CFO as the treasurer so I would entertain a motion to appoint Dr Tony iglesi as treasurer of the Board of Education second this is hard moved by kilburg second by luck all in favor any opposed motion passes all right so then our next order of business we have um one more agenda item do you want me to just keep going let me take over with the notes I can't I don't wanna no no these are the last agenda items so why don't you look those over but I will um I'll at least start the next one so the next the last vote that this Board needs to take tonight is to set the dates and times for the regular meetings of the Board of Education and um it's you're required in your policy to set those um dates in the spring for the following year so that in full transparency everybody knows when your meetings are happening and the way that we put together this um calendar is just by tradition we pick a Tuesday every month and for payroll purposes because you approve of the payroll they need a little time to prepare that and so um we picked the date that is on or after the 19th of the month and there might be an exception for holidays but for the most part the media things are all on a Tuesday that's the 19th or after that's tradition and so those dates have been in the board book previously and is there any discussion about that was there an issue wasn't there an issue with like a November December date I had asked about it but was convinced that we can't move it because it impacts the other dates too much but there was an issue with payroll or something um well they said they can do that um they would be prepared yeah it's okay and then RJ's concern is that there would be too short of a time between the two meetings but we're gonna there's gonna be a short turnaround either in either direction I was just more concerned with payroll the payroll said they can do it that's like a one-time okay then it's any other questions I'll throw one thing out there for a discussion but I know transparency has been an issue with the board and it came to my attention during my tenure that like for example for this evening every governing body in Batavia is currently having a meeting right now I'm not sure if they're still going but they're having a meeting and I know the city council meets four times a month um and they kind of rotate between a Monday and A Tuesday meeting and the library board I know meets on a Monday and a Tuesday so I thought we might not have enough time to discuss it now but I thought it might be open to discussion to perhaps moving our meeting to a Monday instead of a Tuesday now I know what the payroll that might I don't want to put any more undue pressure on the team to put the reports together but theoretically I guess if somebody in the community wanted to attend all these meetings it might be still impossible but you know like tonight they wouldn't have to pick from 104.
for minute jog heading up the field kaylina gagne really Speedy right here catch the Sarasota that's going to be a fire yeah I didn't see a penalty but she did take a little bit of a tumble there which because oh I don't know if she's not really sure here she's one of the toughest players one of the toughest athletes athlete sure everybody's hoping that this is not anything major that is just all fall down and she's just gonna recoup and be back in the game because the fans on both sides they know that she's just a phenomenal after that and they're hoping that this is nothing nothing major and that should just take a little break get a little water there's 2 minutes and 59 seconds left in the first half so she's going to get a nice little break here we're going to keep her on the game fill in some water some rest they get back in there that was an incredibly strong move yeah great move and she put up a good shot really I mean she hadn't she had it oh there's not a good pass right there that's a tough one there went to the left hand really fantastic right to East Longmeadow minnetonk taking it and driving down the field little small penalty there a little bit of a late start played by Weiss and saw a metal setting good wool Dodge there swing it back out to the top two minutes remaining goes over to Gagnon gagnon's got a Merino chasing her above the 12.
yeah so okay so let me clarify that the clarification of that is that may 2020 was the 54 that was the highest that was the highest so on that side where I wrote 54 and in parentheses it says 20 20 from this number that's why I wanted you to know that that 54 came from the 2020 response that was the highest percentage okay yeah so you said that was around Colvin so 2021 and 2022 I'm assuming it dropped then if that was the low the highest 2021 13 percent right here and 2022 it dropped to 47 percent so 2021 it dropped significantly to 13 percent again that's the combination of providing and in 2022 in providing and sustaining that came back up the combination of 47 percent but we still again we still felt this was the same and as it's never and we seem to be moving in the right direction now let's let's see where we continue foreign thank you very much John there were some questions about a document which will help guide you to engage in some of those questions around it's not just school committee but as you say it's broken to leadership staff you know parents so it's a an ongoing school-wide stakeholder as we as we called it we work in progress to become better at that and just feeling that trust and it will help build a stronger climate and culture within the school if we can get there and so that's why we think it's so important and just as Kate said these are recommended objectives that our committee came up with if you feel there's another objective or two that you want to include um feel free like I said this is a partnership we really want to work together to make sure that we are being transparent throughout the building um and with each other really so um feel free to reach out before Tuesday if you have any questions or you think of something after you go home and reread through it or anything like that we are here to the meeting's at three o'clock yep so we meet um on Tuesdays in 10 64.
so I come in a lot of my free time to really provide that um you know quality mentoring and support to students and and just really uh guiding and motivating them to um get to where they want to be at and really encouraging them because I know a lot of them uh grow up fatherless and motherless as well and I uh I stand in the Gap as a surrogate for many of my students that I serve and I just want to end off by just mentioning that as well and thank you guys again for the teachers of the Year tonight have a great evening thank you Mr Radcliffe and you can leave your contact information with our superintendent Steve Scott good evening and uh my name is Steve Scott I'm a counselor at Foothill Middle School and I'm proud to say this is my 33rd year working in Azusa Unified School District in the past excuse me in the past I've given presentations to the board about the early college program or the bilingual program when I was at Azusa High School tonight I come to you with a sense of urgency about something different um I want to talk to you about the case load the caseloads for counselors that we are that we currently have even though we're not wearing masks we don't have to wear masks or we're not social distancing we still feel the effects of covid we came back in person in August of 21 and I remember when I came back a student came to me a couple months in and said I'm really angry and I'm disappointed in myself last night I went through a house and I took every pill that I could find in the house and you know this morning I woke up but today when I go home I'm not going to make that same mistake since coming back in August of 21 at Foothill Middle School I have done 26 risk assessments for suicidal ideation some of those students have been hospitalized other students deal with stress through self-mutilation one girl came to me and said mister I'm really sorry about what she pulled up her sleeves and showed me her arms it was like a butcher shop I promised you and I promised my mom I would never do this again but this is how I deal with the stress I feel a parent sent me an email called me I'm going through a divorce right now my daughter was a cutter before I did what you recommended I checked not just her arms I saw cuts on her belly and on her upper thighs one boy came to me suffering from anxiety explained it really well he said it's like I'm in a pool and I see the top I see the surface I just can't get up there so some of these students will come into the office and they kind of have to recalibrate some of them stay for five minutes ten minutes some a little bit longer every one of those students that described we come up with a safety plan okay now is not the time in my opinion to increase the caseload of our counselors okay because it's just going to make it a lot more difficult to get through and talk to each one of these students it's really really difficult we have to understand that the social emotional and the academics are interlocked they cannot be separated they're absolutely um running out of time we need to keep the case at a reasonable level and if I could just go over a little bit right 15 seconds Mr Scott 15 seconds thank you right now at the middle school the case loads would be about 450 to 1.
um it was yeah it was beyond so Sarah if you may in if Jason and Tom if you do not mind joining here in case you want to add something because they were in there every single time in taking information back and forth for their groups and then back to to the team yeah we collected feedback from students teachers School leaders community members throughout the process after each session I personally attended DAC and spoke with the students there to receive feedback both in the vision and the priorities as we were setting them forth I think our goal is actually to move this forward um and and actually start to socialize it with the with the community to make sure that we can launch uh in time for next school year so I'm going to pass it to my my peers who are in our group with us uh similar yes we did bring it to Kearney middle school and we did get input from our staff and students at different checkpoints throughout the process um I think there is still uh potential need to get more student voice involved as well I would agree with that and I think um well I think we've made some progress in terms of some direction and getting the feedback from the entire community just second everything everybody else said yeah and I I probably I don't know what's do you want me to pass them okay so if you take one of each yeah because those two go together if we want to review now and into groups or yeah I would rather review foreign and then we could probably then if we're going to do them all together I would recommend to select one maybe the one that is going around which I don't know which one it is because I just put them together and pass it on but that's okay um the students experience a higher quality so the end um the in this remember this is aligned to your four goals right that you um worked on so this is around student achievement um and then um the work that you know happens from that goal to the priority how were that priority selected uh the objectives that came in key indicators uh the page almost continues to the smaller one of the initiatives what if if you look at this first one I would like to focus the attention on um on two things from the boarding for feedback in my my team can help hear the Catherine that was part of it um uh first of all uh look at look specifically at the at the objectives right now note these are objectives that if we're talking about a five-year five to six year strategic plan actually the facilities is even beyond the five years but if we're looking at this particular piece on students um in academics if you look at the objectives um that we have set for the first year because this will um will be more it's a moving Target the academics always and from there to look at the initiatives the initiatives is basically which is in the in the shorter page how are we planning or the initial thinking from the group on how we will be achieving this so if you give some feedback on this too and I want before I pass it on to Sarah I want to know one thing that I want to bring to this group because we talked about students being proficient uh but we're we're talking about cmass but we also know that the C mass as it is right now it is not reflective of not only our needs but um is not reflected either of the um personal um characteristics of our students so one of the things that I would like to recommend for you to consider is not having our objectives based on C Mass because we know we've made a case out of the females they put us their winners or losers but then consider us looking at the Spanish assessments the star assessments that is used everywhere and to look at the growth of the students that does not mean I want to make sure that you know it's not perceived as we're not going to care about the C Mass we will continue working on that but as you know for you as a board to determine has there been real growth where are our students performing understanding their own um uh their own identities are we making that progress so that is one of the things that I would like for us to and for you as a board to give feedback and have a discussion on and um and also when we look at the initiatives are this appropriate is there any other initiative that you think you know you need to consider this one so that we can get to this whole goal so I would like for us to to frame our conversation because we can go and rabbit holes for each one of this um so that's the first uh thing Sarah yeah I would just want to double down on on something that Dr Maria named this is a five year these are five year goals so when you look at the goals listed under the objectives the metrics this is what we would expect or we're we're working towards in 2028 the next step for the Cadre the drivers of the work is actually to Benchmark it for the next five years so our our objective for next year wouldn't be sixty percent proficiency it would be something much more reasonable compared to where we are right now and then just to name uh trying to figure out like how do we measure proficiency without needing to use CMS once a year assessments like what other assessments are there particularly that are given Spanish to measure proficiency of students here and Adam's 14.
so uh that bond fund is the most recent one so you can see in that Top Line the cost of issuance is a negative a hundred and thirty seven thousand dollars that's associated with the fact that we had to open up a bunch of purchase orders related to our final Bond sale so note that a hundred million dollars is what the authority the max Authority was provided and we have sold 82 million dollars to date so the sale is to occur around the um the 10th of May where we expect to get the proceeds by the end of May allowing us to complete many of the summer projects that you are also being asked to approve this evening and if there are any specific questions about any of those projects director Albert dutchover is here to answer any of those of you if you have any um and so then the next the next Bond Fund this is the 2015 Authority note there's very small amounts left in this Authority um but all of these monies are expected to be spent by the uh by June 30.
