I'll second the amendment okay all in favor of approving the amendment please say aye aye aye all in favor of approving the subcommittee meeting schedule as amended please say aye aye okay done all right moving on so now we got policies got a lot of policies tonight so um the next um one two three four five six policies are all coming in for a first read and I'm gonna do what I normally do for the public the first read means we as a board are receiving the policy from the policy committee we'll get a brief overview from uh Mrs Brooks but then we have a month to digest it and provide input and the public can provide input so there's nothing being voted on on these six policies tonight we're just receiving them so we can get through the process real quick with a motion a quick description and and and then accept it and move on so first one is policy 6146.1 I will move that the board approve new required policy 6146.1 grading assessment systems weighted grade for a first reading as recommended by the policy and Communications subcommittee second okay it's been moved and seconded Debbie you want to do a brief overview on this one yep is required um and we don't currently have it so this is a straight adoption from Cabe it really just does what it says goes over um how grades are weighted um depending on the type of class that it is it goes through um you know the different levels of classes and the different types of level of rigor of the different classes and how the grades are weighted in that system um and we got an input I think by email today from a member of the public who said go take a look at the class class rank language in there make sure it's consistent with what we decided last January and I'm sure you've got that you'll just take that in correct and Miss we did get that we actually had an opportunity to talk Mr belanda Dr Amanda myself today actually on that and we're actually looking forward to the next policy committee meeting they already have enough they don't typically come to all the policy committee meetings uh Anna and Mark and there you have that on the calendar ready to go so get these introduced for First Street tonight and then I just wanted to write acknowledge the questions from the member of the public that wrote us so absolutely um okay and then additionally could you also just review um just for gender neutral right the comments in there students generally if you you know it's pretty easy and it would be to think about us as leaders in the in the state that's a good suggestion to pass on to cave right because brought up as a member of the public that we uh we thought that was a good idea but they could they could help us all by taking a look at their their Suite of uh policies okay all in favor of accepting it for a first read please say aye aye any opposed all right it's unanimous next one is policy 6141.52 I will move that the board approve new required policy 6141.52 challenging curriculum criteria for identification of eligible grade 8 and 9 students for a first reading as recommended by the policy and Communications subcommittee second thanks moved and seconded Debbie acquired however our practice is in alignment with this prop policy we just we follow everything that's outlined here but we didn't have a written policy so we're recommending a straight adoption from cave on this one and um this one really just looks to outline what how an advanced course or program is defined in terms of whether it's an honors class an advanced placement class Etc and um really how students will be prioritized and given placement in these different courses thank you questions all in favor of accepting it for a first read please say aye okay next one is policy 6141.51 I will move that the board approve new required policy 6141.51 Advanced courses or programs eligibility criteria for enrollment for our first reading is recommended by the policy and Communications subcommittee second it's moved and seconded um Debbie like a broken record tonight again I realize kids and probably don't know what no one record no you're probably right yeah you've got to feel old um this is another required policy that we don't currently have and we're recommending a straight adoption from Cabe this is um the advanced courses or programs and eligibility criteria for enrollment uh feels very similar to the last one that we just reviewed um but again really outlines the purpose of providing these types of advanced courses and programs to students and defines the different types and the procedures criteria and guiding principles of those programs okay any questions for demi on that one all in favor of moving this to first read please say aye aye okay next one is policy 6146 graduation I'll move that the board approved the deletion of brookfield's policy and regulation 6146 graduation and adopt caves version of policy 6146 graduation required as recommended by the policy and Communications subcommittee second second is having any uh any highlights on this one [Music] I have a policy but our policy is quite outdated it's from 2002 and it had um a short policy and then a very long set of regulations along with it so um since our policy is old and outdated and very cumbersome we thought it would be best to um adopt cabe's recommendation their policy is much more comprehensive and includes the regulations within the policy it's much more straightforward so that's what you have here okay we also got a note on this today as well from a member of the public who said part of your engagement with Mr belan no one yes okay any questions they all in favor of approving 6146 for first read hi okay um the fifth one is policy and regulation number 1120.

because is the bottom line and so um I'm not obligated to to feel any particular way about whether it's a charter school or it's Chico Unified Our obligation is to Chico Unified students first but I just wanted to address that some decisions made will be positive decisions for our students as they grow through the district um but I I think that their options are still um in need of more research it's actually you mentioned the agreement uh the prop 39 extension that we granted inspired this year and that November one we have to make another decision on that could we for example not that I'm proposing this it just could we offer the current Inspire site to inspire for as long as 10 years yes that's a possibility you I I can't think of any other scenario that you could offer at this point it would the only space that the district has available is at Chico high so that is the only offer that is on the could be on the table in in the in the options that are available and I have another question um once upon a time I was on the Inspire board I'm sorry one more clarification Proposition 39 agreement is a one-year term so right what they're at a time one year at a time that I I didn't know that thank you when I was on the Inspire board there were statistics about the number of students coming from outside of the district to attend Inspire does anybody have that figure off the top of their head in the past in the early years as much as 20 to 25 percent were out of District students so they they didn't live in the boundary of the district um but that number has uh has come closer to more students are from within the district than outside of the district but I'm glad you brought that up because a prop 39 offer is the district is only obligated to provide school facilities for in-district students not students that come from outside of the district I think that figure changed after campfire because a lot of paradise students had been attending inspire and that option you know went away so we can research that and and provide that information to the board I just want to clarify that the scenarios we're talking about with um Inspire hanging out on Chico High until 2029 or 2030.

essentially anyone that had a balance will owe another 20 dollars I think also Julie we had some last minute kids that decided to go that weren't growing I think Georgia there were so many moving Parts here and this is all like once once it's back running regularly this won't be we won't have the same challenges yeah it's just a little more because because I leave Tuesday so because time is of the essence getting that 1400 is not an issue because we're just gonna send it back out to parents and say everyone has to pay 24 hours no problem um but the issue is that they leave Tuesdays we have to cut the check and if so the parents send in checks for twenty dollars it won't process in time so what we have up at avenues we're exploring Memorial no I said I was out that's it I was told not that because though it takes us a while to process right if we were leaving a week from today parents would send me 20 and it's crazy no problem because we take it through process but because maybe Tuesday and we have to pay this massive amount at this point if anyone wants to donate write it up to Nature's Classroom and they'll get submitted with the final papers yes yes for cash [Music] I don't know that they exist yeah no but we could take it this moment because yes yeah all right I mean I think we're good anybody who wants to donate to Nature's Classroom yeah it's okay all right so the motion has been made and seconded so can we have a vote all in favor all right I guess all right the motion passes and uh may I have a motion to accept the fiscal year 22 audit so moved Megan second Julie any discussion on that questions all right then uh all in favor I guess all right 5-0 that motion passes I'm high as well uh that is the last business item so we've got a little bit of time does anybody have any future agenda item proposals I've already talked about the policies that will be updating um I know the last meeting we talked about the Fuller Foundation donation that you know who leads to success and Technology yeah because we have to talk to them is that right I saw in the choir with Joyce Russ Fuller growing up so I do them okay yeah so we'll get the success committee working on that maybe Todd will have a meeting next week maybe anybody else abandoned I think this is more okay if we don't have too much on our Journal agenda maybe when we forward we invite a student from each grade to come in and just talk about maybe highlight from the year yeah that's Caroline something like that that for class 100 yeah they're a little shy yeah yeah so you're like the little guys too I would love that no thank you yeah but seven o'clock oh this month actually yeah that's fine even as an elementary schools just come in and tell us what you're doing or what you're looking forward to doing or yeah anything so what are we gonna do have the principals try to rally that up yeah I've been working on it already what would happen he's going actually even think about it while he's one he's um chaperone Nature's Classroom yeah he's the administrator guy that's a really good idea and just say what they loved about school or like for the little kids you could just say what what do you wish I wish well like what's your favorite but then like I think that's a great idea because even the little kids like they have so much valuable knowledge like oh what you know what do you yeah what's your favorite what do you like and what do you not like so much what do you think might need to change yeah and then they know a school committee and well yeah it's actually a good idea to do as an annual thing because that and you've got a different kid coming in every year so yeah it kind of teaches them about yeah governance and Community involvement speaking of involvement um we do need to get conversations going with the ptos uh on just you know future plans just uh see if I know they're interested in working together more right this past few months was pretty good I think uh pretty good work by them and good relationship building so yeah maybe talk to them for something for next month or maybe or something a great idea too see that yeah yeah yeah yes thanks for that as well they're great um and then yeah yeah listen and I spoke with um a mom from BMS and she was really like trying to push for getting more of the Performing Arts like extreme instruments yeah for the younger kids and theater and things like that and I don't know if this is something that you know we would discuss or have anything to do with but she said I'll do anything to help you know I think she already sent like you know letters or emails to um staff and she said she would like manage a booster club you know to respond for it and everything and she's like all in and belong to do anything she can to make it happen yeah those are the types of things that I'm talking about the parent groups and things like yeah with the plan that we have the 3D plan that we have right I think you know more Performing Arts is part of the plan they didn't go to the budget situation this year but yeah for next year that's you know what do the parents want what are they going to support where the voters are going to support foreign [Music] is it like every week or just one day it's every month you'll think all sorts of things sprinkled throughout yeah so Boylston meets uh does that link run that in Berlin yeah for them but see that's the thing I think it takes yeah and she's a volunteer yeah this is the first time it's it's terrific yeah it's I mean the program in Boylston used to be like around for four weeks or something like that I suppose like every Monday or whatever say an hour we do those but she does day ones too she does one that runs like they do a theater one once a week and they'll do like a dream catcher make dream catchers one day on a different day of that month make wind chime was the person from Hudson or something the art studio oh for the um a couple different ones but I think that was one yeah like yeah that's how Boylston used to have last year Boylston had a Lego Club but the principal organized that in Boylston um with the Lego league but even like 2019-20 there was there's more stuff they're organized all that to us [Music] Elementary School too like there was like bead class yeah for like four weeks yeah a week that's a huge I think that's really important for kids that don't play sports especially I think kids need something after or like parents are like I don't want to do after school program because I don't you know whatever for whatever reason um enrichment is huge so I I agree if we can get that figure out a way to yeah we've got to work with the ptos and whether or not it's an employee that's already working at the school that takes it on as a project or if the PTO has a volunteer that they could assign tears Yeah well yeah that would be huge because then I mean but people they did pay historically so I mean oh yeah yeah small eventually get paid the vendor gets paid but you'd have to pay parents probably have to pay the PTO is that what works yeah and then the PTO is so yeah that's more a lot that's another thing for the PTO yeah thank you yeah they do a great job I really do yeah that's a lot of work for them yeah yeah we could do that but that's where PTO is linked together so maybe Jackie and Kyle already yeah yeah that's the thing right that's that's one district and they can recruit some more people right and then they can recruit some more like this huge incoming kindergarten class in Boylston hopefully they can recruit some more parents and you could also do you could use the same vendors yep you just need a parent that's going to organize so you get a new that's the other huge difference let us know yes if you put a call out you're like hey this is what we're thinking I think you get a lot of return email how they have their website how they have their setup it's is beautifully done I just need someone in Boylston that will work with so yeah I think you're right I don't know maybe meditation meditation I'll see if they're interested in coming to speak to us Jackie yeah in June that would be great to get something like that I've been running for September all right a lot of work yeah someone asked me on the way up to the beginning like oh why wouldn't you get four kindergarten teachers instead of an a for each three and I was like my grandma's surprise yeah I was like I don't know um but later after sleep like you know we don't have to eat or I just wanted I wasn't able to verbalize that thought or yeah all right everybody else um [Music] second unfair hi all right we are adjourned because that was record time yeah it was can you do this everywhere right I don't know how many

I'll move that the board approved the revisions to policy and regulation 1120 public participation as recommended by the policy and communication subcommittee second moved and seconded Debbie okay um this one we have this policy currently it's from 2003 so we thought that we should take a look at it just because it is quite old but there really were no substantial changes I think in one section it referred to bi-monthly meetings so we just changed that but other than that um there were no changes um this one has regulations attached to it so the only thing that we clarified on the regulation was where it said that any person speaking at public comment has to state their name address and group that they're representing we also added that they have to include the topic to be discussed but that was it um can I make a suggestion yep uh on the very first page of the actual policy that sort of Standalone sentence regarding the three minutes yep I would suggest changing shell to May okay but you can discuss committee I guess if I agree okay this is one we ought to pay specific very focused attention too because it's how we run our meetings the spirit of this is to make sure we're aligned with actual practice yep any other discussion or comments all in favor of moving uh 1120 to first read please say aye um so I noticed the uh words on the motion there didn't say to first read let's see neither does the next one all right [Music] yeah oh yeah can we as long as you actually say it I said it right we'll fix it and graduation as well right yeah okay so um just for clarity yep I'm gonna do this I'd like to move that all the Motions on the the policies we've already approved are for our first read just for clarity can I have a second on that second okay all in favor okay good just for clarity and just put for first reading your words on the upcoming one okay next one is bylaw number 9325.

that could involve inspires loss of this eight million dollars that they have for School Construction yes it would you're nodding your head and you you are a representative of the right so so she's here on behalf of what firm us Chico uniforms so this is our expert and she's affirming it's true Jacqueline Krueger also affirms if we think that way about Inspire hanging out on Chico High until 2029 or 2030 that money very very probably could be gone is there any reason not to think that it absolutely will be gone so we're basically if we think that way we're saying Inspire high school you can kiss your eight million dollars in new construction funding goodbye I just want to make that clear I'm sorry sir which spot would you propose all right I'm gonna put the stop to this please we'll have order do you have any other questions for Julie at this time we'll have a quick one regarding um hip hop 39 agreements because I just wanna clarify but I believe is true that while they can make a prop 39 uh request and we have to honor that for one year we could go outside of that and make a separate use agreement with them they would so they wouldn't have to keep coming back every year right we could say correct you've got five years or until you find a better site foreign [Applause] a long-term in lieu of prop 39 agreement and that's what we currently have that is expiring uh this June 30th with the allowable extension we have similar agreements at our properties at Forest Ranch Nord Chico Country Day for schools that operate on our campuses so yes I don't the second part of your question though is for when or whenever you find a other suitable place I don't think that that is possible it would have a definite term and then it could be renewed but it would have a definite end date not an open-ended agreement we couldn't craft them kind of a clause and know whatever contract we put in with it either party could could opt out under certain circumstances yes and they do include that yeah okay yes so you're suggesting it could end earlier if they found something yes yes that would be included in the language I thought you meant a maximum term gotcha yes thank you thank you and we did uh Tina worked her magic back there and Inspire has 18 of their students are 67 that come from outside of Chico Unified and their current total enrollment is minus the ones that don't go that don't live within the district meaning we currently have how many Chico Unified students enrolled at inspire fast math total enrollments 366.

I will move that the board approved the deletion of brookfield's bylaw 9325 meeting conduct and adopt cape's version of bylaw 9325 meeting conduct and bring it to the board for a first read as recommended by the policy and Communications subcommittee second moved and seconded Debbie um this one we're just recommending that we delete our old policy and honestly I can't remember exactly why um we decided to strike the whole thing and just go with the new updated cave policy again to align with practice and be cleaner and more up to date okay Council also um provided input okay any discussion okay all in favor of approving uh by law number 9325 for First read please say aye aye any opposed all right good uh next is the approval of a curricular tool illustrative map I will move that the board approved the recommended curricular tool titled illustrative math as the new K-8 curricular tool for math instruction being phased in beginning in the 2023-2024 school year as recommended by the cape subcommittee and Dr anaman second all right it's moved and seconded would you like to walk us through absolutely so thank you very much I'm excited to talk about this it's been one of the major focuses of uh my my work in terms of the curricular work this year has been to the K3 reading as Dr Mike already alluded to and then um the uh this what has resulted in illustrative math um in the very beginning of the year Tiffany Johnson and Jim Fitzpatrick and Mark DeWitt came to me to talk about the math curricular tool that is currently used which is my math which was approved in the um 2017 year and um felt that based on our SBA scores from last year and kind of you know over the last couple years as we've all talked about you know really moving out of covid and um and moving toward this recovery this learning laws recovery from learning loss um and feeling that they were a little bit stagnated in the approaches and dynamic with regard to math instruction particularly in the K-8 and also with an alignment to um to the high school curriculum and and courses and so we went through a comprehensive uh process as you I was as was outlined in the memo that you saw that I sent to Cape and essentially just to sum up we created a larger team of K-8 teachers and administrators as well as uh Andrew Hill who is the administrator the content leader for stem at the high school it was very important to have his involvement because he really not only provided that kind of nine nine through 12 art articulation component but also is a leader in the state with um these with standards and alignment and you know really making uh math be um accessible for all Learners he's done a variety of presentations at a variety of conferences and that kind of thing so his he almost served a little bit as consultant to this group and so his input was very helpful and the way we kind of organized it was a foreshadowing of what we're going to be doing a little bit next year with our professional development so it's kind of nice because it has taken us on this path to alignment and it was also coincided with our strategic plan development so our larger group of teachers and administrators broke up into three teams all kind of shepherded by the either the content or the instructional coach or the math tutor Tiffany Johnson and each one of those groups simultaneously reviewed all of the um five curricular tools that were and those were curated by by those three folks and Andrew to kind of find out the ones that are the most aligned to the Connecticut core standards and those are the ones that kind of rose to the top and then each one of the teams went and looked at curriculum tools and looked at or looked at the materials looked at various uh did some research on the different districts that have used these various tools looked at the the alignment excuse me to the standards and we narrowed it down we met a couple different times and kind of built our consensus over time with the larger group and followed that process until we finally got down to the two finalists which were his math and illustrative Bridges only goes to to fifth grade and illustrative goes K8 so we kind of had our decision made for at least six eight and then we really took some time from February to March to discern which of the two curricular tools would be the most appropriate and if there wasn't a lot of daylight between the two we kind of agreed that illustrative would make sense for that Continuum and that articulation and so that's when members of the various groups went out on field trips and visited different districts including Newtown and Monroe and a couple other districts and each of whom you know various ones that are being used and implemented and the feedback that came back was they were impressed with both programs both curricular tools but really illustrative was just kind of that that one step up because of as Dr Mike talked about um the the inquiry base that it that it uses just kind of as a foundational element of the approach but particularly the dialogue and and conversation and collaboration upon which it is really dependent so there's a lot of focus on students not just learning the material not just kind of you know like turn like Stand and Deliver with the information and then practice it is inquiry-based and exploratory so students really have to Grapple with the various skills and then do a lot of problem solving together and as I said it is aligned to the standards it also um you know is a model that has that has kind of it is research based and used in a variety of different places including throughout the world um so uh you know we we ended our conversation with Andrew Mr Hill giving a presentation a summation of a presentation that he had just given at the atomic conference the week before and it aligned directly to this type of approach which was awesome and actually the members of the team said can we have him do our next PD um and they because he just gave the summation of his uh presentation so they were really excited so it not only is a curricular tool upon which we can base these curriculum changes because we talked a lot in this process about how a tool is not your curriculum it is the it is a supplement to your curriculum and you really make those adjustments to make sure it works for our district um but also uh the idea of that ongoing professional development that's definitely going to be needed to make sure that our teachers are comfortable with this um not only the tool but really the style of teaching and the delivery of the instruction because it is a kind of a fundamental shift in the way we are uh delivering this instruction in addition it'll have ramifications to scheduling so we'll have to engage the principals and talk to them about that particularly at CLE s um but if it does it is I'm excited about it because it will have I anticipate particularly the instructional changes we'll have kind of a waterfall effect into other areas such as science and social studies it integrates a lot of different disciplines and it is that kind of inquiry base which definitely will bring in that idea of not only inquiry based and Science and you know kind of exploratory and really scrutinizing history and social studies but also completely aligns to the Strategic plan and the Brookfield sees so that's where we that's what we talked about first um Mr Jewett also uh and as you see you know it says notes compiled by Mr Jewett some of this is editorialized but a lot of this is taken from the materials of illustrative math from the um Representatives that the key and uh Mr Fitzpatrick are working with um so it kind of just outlines the different uh you know kind of a typical approach to a lesson and how you would use this curricular Tool uh and then also and there's some information about the alignment from the State Department of Education and then finally another thing that I think really kind of tipped the scales and Miss nygarde was here earlier but she was a part of the team she was one of the members of the of the group um was the the capacity to support multi-language learners because not only does it uh you know it allows for for students to really grapple with and work on their math skills but then it encourages that dialogue and that conversation and that was something that she was particularly nervous about in the very beginning and so she was one of the ones who went on these field trips and talked with teachers and they said how much how how helpful it has been for their ml students because it encourages that conversation not so much on I'm sitting here listening to you present to me and talk to me but let's work on this together so it takes the focus off of the interpersonal conversation and more on to the the actual exploration of the material and so the pressure's kind of off so um you know it was it was a we're they're very excited about it we then had a conversation as a group about Okay so we have a new school building we have K3 reading work that we've been working on we're readjusting the you know the whole kind of dynamic of our district and now we're also going to go how are we going to roll this out in a thoughtful and intentional way because telling K8 that we think we're gonna just put this new curricular tool into place and have all the curriculum work and have the professional development and all of that seemed a little bit overwhelming so we came up with a two to three year plan of phasing it in starting with the middle school and actually down to fourth grade and frankly we were going to go fifth to eight but the fourth grade teachers who were on the team wanted it so badly then we put fourth grade in there as well and so with the idea that you know next year we'll be doing um we'll be working toward our or a change a shift exploring for our reading at the at seles and we are hopefully going to be bringing to you next month a universal screener that we have come upon or that we've decided upon so that's the next Cape meeting um so they're going to be kind of working on that from the in the lower elementary group and then the um you know middle to Middle Elementary to our Upper Elementary to Middle School we'll be working on infusing this um new math curricular tool with some piloting happening in k-3 so it can kind of see the clouds for the following year when we'd be prepared to rule it out fully K-8 hopefully we want to give ourselves that extra year just in case we have um you know if there are any constraints budgeting scheduling whatever the case may be but we're really excited about this and getting this going starting in the Summer where we would have curriculum uh you know extended due to time to revised curriculum as well as some you know kind of professional development time to get folks on board and ready to go for the fall I have a question that I forgot to ask um actually I just thought of it recently but um because this kind of focuses a lot more on just sort of like like working with math right and just working with it actively in the classroom with in a dialogue sort of way and that was like a big Focus I remember using the word dialogue a lot but is there also space for really all Learners not just youngest ones but um for them to do like just regular the practice that you still just need in math just for fluency and you know just you know your basic math facts like is there room for that in in a program like this yep that's a good that's okay Debbie's not and Debbie was also a part of this uh process as well as was appropriate um but yes there is it's built in and actually the general lesson plan on that second page has that idea of that cooldown where students are working more independently and doing that kind of repetitive practice of the work that the explicit skill that they had just worked on so there is that piece it really takes the um I would say and Debbie can maybe chime in here but it takes the focus off of the teacher doing that didactic delivery of instruction and really allows the students to explore with the teacher being the guide on the side um and you know but a bit of being able to jump in when needed and help them facilitate there's a lot of manipulatives and a lot of exploration that's really what the material costs I have to do it all right so it answered some of the questions so um my math we've been using since 2017 right that's when it was my understanding so in our data to support this is the SBA scores learning loss from covid I think so that's definitely would be part of it and those are good questions about kind of where where it was the Genesis of this right um I I would say that it also has to do with um the lack of flexibility with the myMath curricular tool you know teachers kind of just turn the page a little bit and deliver that particular lesson and so there's not as much ability to personalize instruction and differentiate when students are in need of of remediation or support or going more deeply or extending um whereas the illustrative because it's more focused on what's directly to align to Connecticut standards and it's more focused on um you know students really really owning the skill and building on that skill it's less about a a pacing of lesson plans so what's happening now that's not working to make that shift to illustrative so you mean what's the problem with my math right so yeah so that's a that's a good question it's not working right now too if that warrants I think that what what is not working from from what I would got from the teachers and from what I've kind of seen in the curriculum and I would say with the SBA scores um is it doesn't seem that it's kind of sticking with kids they're not seeing that transference not only um with the skill building but also year to year as well as much as they would like um also uh one of the focuses of next year is really that curriculum Artic or kind of alignment and K-12 articulation and there's not a seamless uh alignment from the K-8 curriculum to the 912 math classes so it's not quite whereas illustrative because it is so aligned with the state standards it is much more seamless with going into algebra one geometry Algebra 2 pre-calc calc statistics because those are all so based on the Connecticut core standards and out of Newtown Monroe and Wilton who who uses illustrial I believe it was Monroe and Wilton who used illustrative and Newtown does Bridges K-5 and illustrative six eight do you know how long they've been using it for um I'm I know that I know I don't know exactly with each one of them I know that Newtown uh started they made the transition I believe two years ago and um when I spoke with the former director of instruction from Newtown who brought that in and it could have been a couple years prior to that but he and I spoke a lot about it um you know he talked about uh that that he really loved Bridges but he thought that it was a little bit the connection between fifth and sixth was a big leap for kids because it was a shift in the way that they were approaching but he was he he really liked the bridges program um the Wilton I believe just adopted it last year and that is something who with with whom Mr Fitzpatrick has been speaking a lot because they've done a lot of work on you know they're kind of just fresh off making this move so um and I don't know how long Monroe was had it for so all three habits all three have one of those two yes yeah that's a again because Bridges is only K5 um you know there are a couple different some districts have a couple different ones but Newtown has a k r six eight right yes they roll it out some the same way or tomorrow without K8 or they stagger roll out I I haven't spoken to um the I believe Wilton it rolled it out over a phase-in I don't know about Newtown or Monroe that's a good questions though I can certainly find out yes but you know we have two things to consider right um whether to invest in this new curricular tool right and when to roll it out um hence and budget implications right not just the curricular tool but the extended Duty the PD a lot actually so that was one of the important that was absolutely that's a really good point um so that was one of the parameters that we all agreed upon in the very beginning um is that as we were because I knew we weren't going to be prepared to know what the curricular tool was going to be by the time I had to get my budget to Ken and so what we did is I said that was one of the expectations of the group is that we would not be able to pursue a curricular tool if it was going to far exceed the the currently budgeted items and so this illustrative with all of the changes and transitions will not be that should probably be a couple thousand dollars less than the mymf materials um certainly the materials will be a little bit though they're about I think two thousand or three thousand dollars less than um if we were to stay with my math but then we will have the extra cost of extended Duty and professional development however we have those budgeted for and we won't exceed what we haven't budgeted for they have workbooks like how is it similar to my math or that it's a totally different um I I there are I don't know exactly of all the details in terms of um the the materials that come for students um I don't know Debbie do you have any idea about the difference in terms of materials yeah that one made a gap um so I can I can certainly find out information about that a few times for you I don't believe there's the same kind of um uh same level of material that the students have in terms of going home but they have a lot more in-class manipulatives and then there are a lot of um there are a lot of online well a lot of worksheets that that teachers get through there uh through what they um their access and then they can kind of build their materials that they need to and send home based on the needs of the kids during that particular unit so is there an online component obviously for the teachers but is there for the there is not a technology component for the kids no it's all it's very Hands-On and manipulative oriented and I also remember you saying that this opens a lot of opportunity for our instructional coaches because of how explorative it is right that yeah that's a really good point um that this year actually a couple of the teachers who have been piloting it so at the middle school there are teachers who have we have hired over the last couple years who have who were using illustrative in their former districts and so again illustrative is a curricular tool but it's also kind of a little bit of an instructional approach and mindset um and so they were bringing that approach and that was actually one of the ways that Mr Jewett um kind of was turned on to the idea of illustrative math um and so he has two teachers in the seventh grade who have been using these approaches pretty regularly with the kind of the materials that we have approved for our district but bringing in some supplemental material so almost kind of an in built-in pilot um and so I think that that's you know one of the ways that we're going to be transitioning but so he's already been kind of in there and been able to use those teachers to give feedback to the rest of the department Mr Fitzpatrick has been as we've been looking at these different materials because two teachers with whom he's working in fourth grade and a teacher in third grade who that's really been his in to doing this coaching through the last couple months I would say um and it's one of the they're definitely going to be we're going to be leaning on them pretty strongly too be our professional development embedded but also um to be in into those classrooms questions the document s to do it compiled I could you know share those or I don't because I don't know if you can even answer them but yeah certainly if you want to I would be more than happy to get you answers to your questions if you want to send them to me or send them to us absolutely approving I'm just table this or does it are you okay I mean I would like to see like you know you know you know it's there was a lot of fluff in here you know it sounds like you know the steps to the lesson you know the warm-ups kind of sounds like a review like the classroom activities um it's more like your guide to practice or your modeling and a little lesson synthesis it's more like your independent practice and the cooldown's more like the exit ticket right it's um but like Rosa said you know that time for the fluency practice and much needed math facts and things like that that need to be you know kind of skilled skilled and drilled um it's it's hard to kind of weed through all this language to actually see the lesson and know the materials give me a better picture of you know what we're really investing in like I'm not you know second guessing the professionals that were on the committee but it's hard to really get a good picture of um you know what we're proposing yeah is there any um if we were to have a comeback for the board is there any time is there a timing implication uh with Summer coming and those kind of things and again we never want to make Rush decisions either right you know we want everybody to be comfortable Sports so can you talk a little bit about that absolutely so um yeah I mean I certainly want you to feel like you have a enough information that you can make a a good decision on this um and I I would definitely say that by the June meeting we would need to know because I need to be able to make sure that we have people on in line for setting up Summer work and professional development and that kind of thing and also it will there's a pretty big impact with our professional development plan for next year which um you know will be a K-12 alignment Focus for math but again you know certainly if there are questions I'm more than happy to come back it's like budget implications or what that kind of yeah can I just make a suggestion sure I think they're good questions and I think it'll be good to have the engagement um I think we're going to end up needing a short special meeting anyhow because of another topic which is small Wares on the new school need to be approved and sometime next week or the week after but we can't wait for the June meeting because I got to get them ordered um why don't I make it a two topic special meeting and get that would give you guys a chance to connect and then we could just uh I think everybody's had a chance well I've had a chance to think about if they had any further questions but that way we I don't think it'll have to be a long discussion it could just be an item we deal with is that okay with everyone yeah certainly okay um good so we'll table this item okay um for the timing I before I leave it though I had some very dry questions okay that we could maybe address um one is and just confirmed there I live through the world of new math that came in and it got a whole generation of kids confused on how to do real math they had lost the traditional method for long division and other things there's no crazy math techniques in here it's all pretty standard math right yes okay good I had to ask um I figured that's a good question right so yes no question it feels a little bit yeah sometimes absolutely second was uh Advanced middle schoolers especially up in eighth grade who were kind of ready to go to like an algebra one type of thing what are we doing with them and what would we do in the with this new set of tools so this these would not supplant um the the classes or the courses this is just the curricular tool so that's a good question is you know going to be you know illustrative math 7 and illustrative math 8th um it's not it's this is just going to be the curricular tool so there would still be that opportunity for algebra one of the joys of our district right now we have some really good math kids coming through with what we're doing in middle school and I don't I wouldn't want this to yeah this is not that's a good question this is not a change in scope and sequence at all and this is the curricular tool what is the total spend to do this yep so that's a good question um so for the uh materials um it would be thirty three thousand and eight hundred dollars roughly it's twenty seven dollars a student um and then so that would be and then there and it's um it's eighty dollars per teacher I believe um and so those together would when we have 20 teachers you have 80 teacher 20 teachers uh and so if we were to going to go full four eight plus some piloting materials for uh K3 and then professional development would cost anywhere from 2500 to 3 000 for a year and then roughly uh six to eight thousand dollars in curriculum writing possibly with extended Duty we have to kind of see what the availability is what the need is what the you know plan would be with that okay and all of that's built into the budget and right right now materials for um grades four through eight for that we have built into the budget uh for next year is three thirty seven thousand seven hundred and fifty three dollars um the uh there's there's also money built into the budget person technology which we don't need um and then the uh professional development um that that I have built in um is fifteen thousand dollars but that's you know that's inclusive of a lot of things so there is money already built into that and then our extended duty at the various class at the various schools as well I think we'll need a schedule when we meet the next time that says here's the next year and here's the total roll-on picture right and how does it compare to what we do tonight it's very simple can can you've done them a thousand times so um I just think there's a board if we're going to approve it we're approving a dollar amount that goes with it so I think that's just an important thing that we have and it's just it's a it's a it's a exhibit I'm not dwelling on it I heard what you said it sounds like it's it's similar to what we're using material wise and we have an investment in professional development curriculum writing if I got that right yes okay yeah which is but I'm happy to give up which is in the adopted budget which we've got some every year yeah we are we always have to just pick and choose what we're spending that money on so this is what you're choosing okay any further discussion on this all right so we're tabling this item I don't need a vote to table so we'll go ahead and table without objection um the next item on the agenda is substitute pay rates I'll move that the board approved the substitute pay rates as recommended by the finance subcommittee second okay it's moved and seconded it all right I'll just say something briefly about it but I think Ken well all right Ken's coming up so you can probably say it all it doesn't matter who does it no go ahead you're already up there well you have an exhibit in your packet showing the current uh pay rates with the proposed pay rates uh we met a couple of times with ESS and talked about our fill rates and what we could do to to make sure we get quality substitutes and potentially increase our fill rates and they did some research and they came back with these proposals the biggest possible biggest impact from my point of view would be the long long term substitute pay rates because at the rate that we were paying now they were having great difficulty in getting long-term substitutes which was then forcing us to go out and hire our own long-term substitutes where we pay them 301 a day so we asked them to do some research and find out at what level would they be able to entice people to to come on board this would actually get us lower cost than we have today yes yes so the the other side of this this as current based on our current fill rates would cost us about fifty thousand dollars more in a year so that would be something we'd have to deal with going forward in the new budget um potential savings if they are able to get us a couple of long-term Subs instead of us having to hire our own um if the fill rates increase that could be a cost to us but that would make things less disruptive because it would mean less we wouldn't have to pull as many paraprofessionals from assignments to cover for classes or pay other teachers to cover for classes so that's this is what we are recommending and as Rosa was going to start to talk this was discussed at the finance yeah exactly four times this isn't even all the pay rates that we still have to have to go through no but it's the one that would have the most immediate impact that we want to move on all right are there any questions on for Ken on this Ken when would this be implemented we talked about implementing it right away right after the tonight if it is approved and the yeah you did an estimate of the potential cost of this year was relatively small if I recall yes it was about eight or nine thousand dollars yeah how do these rates the proposed rates compare with the neighboring districts they make us much more competitive so roughly in line with them we're not at the top but a little better than in the middle yes yeah there are some districts you need to have higher rates to then their neighboring districts just to get people to go right the big the big cities are harder you actually they pay higher on substitutes because it's harder to get people into the big big schools like that so so Danbury is an interesting they're higher rates but the feedback was that these rates people would love to come to Brookfield so yes okay if there's any no questions all in favor of approving The Substitute daily rates for effective immediately we say aye thank you thank you all right that's it for new business you guys actually when we went to one meeting and once you said they were we're okay having one long meeting well this is it [Music] um we're into Old business um the three items under policy are all things that were first read over 30 days ago so we're back for a final approval and so item number one is policy regulation number five one two five I'll move that the board approved to replace brookfield's policy 5125 FERPA with cape's version and approve the edits to regulation 5125 FERPA for a final reading as recommended by the policy and Communications subcommittee the first reading was on March 15th second okay it's moved and seconded Debbie any feedback or changes that you received no there any input from anybody around the table on them I read them at length this afternoon um Debbie I I do when I was reading them I I was perfectly fine with the content on them I just so so you know but I did find a couple of editing things um would you would you if we approve these do you mind if I uh just work with Lisa to get the editing things done perfect um you know it's things like indents and things like that and Lisa I know you're over there I'll bring them in with me tomorrow when I come to see John and we could just go go through them if they're pretty simple it's like one or two or three things on each one perfect okay um in particular on this one there's yellow we corrected that and the version you got on Friday correct so it's been filled in since I think that was a leftover highlight okay that's corrected all right good all right then I don't have any further issues it's just a funny little indents yeah and fonts um all right with no further discussion all in favor of approving five one two five hi okay that's approved uh next up is policy 5131.911 I'll move that the board approved to replace brookfield's existing policy 5131.911 bullying with cape's version and approved edits to regulation 5131.911 bullying for a final reading is recommended by the policy and Communications subcommittee first reading was on March 15th second they moved and seconded Debbie anything on this one okay any comments from the board same comment on formatting so uh but all in favor of approving 5131.911 hi okay next one is uh next page policy 5144.1 I'll move that the board approved to delete current policy 5141.1 restraint and seclusion and accept an updated version based on language adopted by Wallingford Public Schools as well as the regulation based on Cave language for a final reading is recommended by the policy and Communications subcommittee first reading was on March 15th second moved in second and anything on this one Debbie answer questions okay and we get all the responses are satisfactory okay I remember seeing your note on that okay um on the policy I I I just will tell you the edit it's the social Wallings were down on the bottom okay so that kind of stuff is what I was catching yep and uh I just thought we wouldn't want to publish one of our own policies and said Wallingford on it but okay and then the policy approval date I circled on that too because they had already approved it on their schedule so yep so but that's the kind of things I was looking at okay any further discussion all in favor of approving 5144.1 please say hi hi okay it's approved okay that's uh next item is the budget estimate and it's just a standing item that to give updates on the uh budget and I think the only input I would have is uh the referendum date which is the 16th um so uh two weeks from yesterday and uh and it was approved at the town meeting we had we did a presentation uh tarakar did most of it I did the chart for the board of debt on our behalf and and uh got just a couple of questions from the audience and uh and they voted unanimously to move it to reprim so so I would just urge everybody who's watching still after almost three hours um that please get out to vote we need the support um uh that of everybody in the district to pass this budget okay next is an update on Candlewood Lake Elementary School or through a list [Music] um just some items that are completed things that they're working on so completed items all the terrazzo on the second floor is complete the art installation hangers those supports have gone in the cloud ceiling which you'll see in here in the tree ceiling is complete all of the exterior brick whiteboard installation wall panels in the multi-purpose room and the steel and the wood for the exterior canopies over in the entrances those are all complete what they're working on now is the channel bed that's in the front the servers Terrazzo on the first floor and they're starting their water and window testing um Bob I know you had a question about delay in terms of move-in time a lot of jargon flies around at those meetings and some other reports always say like delay delay delayed there are some things that are delayed but it's not going to impede on our move-in time um what's holding up the main stairwell is the Treads so the stairwell can go in but the Treads themselves are delayed but you can move in without those so they'll have something temporary in place um stairwell the stairwell week is planned to be complete as of July 15th so when we talk about meeting the deadline we're talking about meeting the deadline for teachers Administration secretaries custodians and our technology team moving into the building at the end of June when Huckleberry demolition begins on Huckleberry we're not talking about um August impacts at all right in any of this right it's all all about meeting the end of June deadline um and having uh moving boxes moved into teacher classrooms and elsewhere throughout the building are you sure that's all on time um what may need Board of Ed approval I think is maybe a playscape design is that true Bob was just alluding to that so I could just before we get into the the pictures the slideshow um there is similar to the technology package and um Furniture packages known as ffne and some other things the playscape and the small wears package need to be approved by the board and the MBC I know that uh arcadis was feverishly working to get that package prepared for tonight so we could add it to this very long meeting and approve it so we wouldn't have to meet again but as Bob alluded to it's likely uh uh before May 16th which is when the NBC meets again we would have a joint special meeting and Bob and Paul and I have been uncontact about about looking at some time next week to do that and we can get that done and ready to go so they could get onto ordering the playscape from game time and the uh the small Wares there's uh I'd invite Dave to come to that meeting as well because he had a really big part in the playscape design with the team at the school as well as meeting some budget restraints and constraints with small Wares and I think we did a great job when we exercised some real leadership and creativity to come in within the budget given inflation over the last couple of years that's one of the areas smallers and playscape where it caught us where we've been ahead of the curve on inflation with the school project having locked in these were two areas that caught us so we had a really sharpen uh the pencil the pencil as it were so we're really excited about that but we do have to meet to get moving on that and again as you said Bob maybe we parlay that into a meeting to further discuss the uh illustrative math as well after we break away from The Joint session or something like that yeah yeah um or Bob you've been on a number of Tours was there anything you wanted to add or go every Friday guys if any of you have a chance to join us on Fridays you're all welcome nine o'clock it's moving from a construction site to a beautiful school right and you walk down the halls and you just uh you're just smiling things the gift that this community is giving to the children is becoming more and more real it's it's absolutely amazing and one of the one of the greatest Joys I had on Monday afternoon and she doesn't even know she brought this joy into my life was uh our veteran kindergarten teacher Mrs Larson uh was finishing up a pdec meeting and we all know the legendary energy that Mrs Larson brings to any conversation and she was just so excited because she had toured on the Friday before and she was sharing I missed that tour I wasn't able to attend and she was just so excited to share with me how excited she was and she said John I went right right in back into the school and I told everybody oh my God it's the greatest thing ever we can't you know you can't wait to get in there and that is driving energy and enthusiasm from teachers to finish the year and get into the new school so um there's just a lot of excitement yeah I I'll say the Friday morning walk-throughs they give John and I a chance to see how progress is going and that's why I do it religiously now but it's also we bring in three to four teachers from Huckleberry and the two to three teachers into Center school and maybe from the fifth grade teachers months and the as time is getting closer going on and the rooms are getting finished we their excitement level is extraordinary they're seeing their own they're seeing their own club literally this last time they brought paint chips with them right because they were looking to figure out to make sure they could match the colors of what they wanted to bring in of their own stuff to their classroom and the excitement was you're across that's where you are and you know they they could see their own classrooms which was just a joy um and the when you walk in the fifth grade Wing you walk in it's been the rooms are closed up and locked it's done it's done done right I think there's a little carpet right along the expansion joint that has to be done once those come in there were a supply chain issue but other than that the whole Wing is done fourth grade the wing is done third grade I think the Wing's gonna be done this week in the in the upstairs Terrazzo is complete so there's just so much done on the is not just done they've actually put plywood over because they don't want us to damage it while they're still doing construction downstairs is still more in the construction we'll see right on the pictures but the the thing that uh Chris who was uh from uh Arcata so it gives us walks us through make sure we don't go into places we shouldn't um you know where they're working on polishing or grinding or something like that uh he's comment to the teachers was this is going to be the most beautiful school in the state of Connecticut and uh that the the people working on the school are proud of it but they are kind of fun and Chris is a uh a veteran project management around construction for probably 30 plus years and for him to say that he has no reason to try to sell the project or anything like that he is he is he is blown away and so full of Pride with where this project is going so I just will say if anybody wants to do it it's a fun walk through and you see the excitement of the teachers and you get a real sense of how close it's getting you know even if it's the night before just sitting the stairs no the stairs the stairs without the Treads are supposed to be going in uh this week I think so they were supposedly the last week but they were on the verge but if you do want to take take uh just get send me a note because we need to make sure we have a hard hat for you that's it that's a requirement yeah raise your shirt and then Eric um has a few pictures he wants to share as well after Rosa walks through the the traditional slideshow so there's the outside um so you can start you can see kind of like the the bed in the front is starting to have sort of the rough structure of the Landscaping which is which is nice it'll I don't think we're going to get to any planting that won't be done until next spring so that's right 24th yeah some Falls planting as I think will go in but um it'll still be kind of rough looking on the on the outside dirt wise um next one all right so that's where the playscape will be so hopefully we can start to see some changes there over the summer there's the main entrance main entrance hall um stairwell's still not in that's what we just talked about here where there'd be the landing stairwell for the Treads to go I mean the guys yep that is the multi-purpose room so the stage all the walls the lights all the panels for that are are in and actually looks exactly like the picture so it's really coming together this is the main cafeteria large cafeteria so the servery from that picture looks a lot more progressed than the last time I was there the terrazzo was actually just going in the day that we the day I was there so that looks really earlier today earlier today that was all being polished um when I was on site so it's this doesn't do a picture the picture's probably a week old yeah this doesn't do justice for what that cafeteria floor looked like today when I left oh yeah so great yeah awesome this is the just kind of a close-up I guess of the floor yeah which yep not polished but it'll look just like the picture which is nice the gym gym still looks um other than the basketball hoops the gym still looks like you know sort of the main storage area but um again I say this every time but not much is being done on on the walls in there the gym floor is like one of the last things to go in because the gym floor will be made of hardwood yeah and so that's they didn't want any damage to that floor Bill one of the last as they worked their way out of the building so that'll be one of the last installs the gross motor skills area um you can kind of see the wall panels going in there so that's adjacent to the gym and the cloud ceiling right this is the what they were they were labeling the tree canopy yeah so I think that looks really good small cap the entries entrance into the neighborhood you can't see the art installations because they're hung away from the you know all the way up on the second floor classroom totally done everything's protected another classroom I think all those smart boards are in now um almost they're um I think uh One Wing is depending on I think it's that third grade Wing uh Mr Penny and then some of the other non-traditional classroom spaces still made up we're almost there this is one of the breakout spaces in the at the uh the end of the neighborhood so the lighting is really impressive in there it looks really good you can see the uh different color on the wall that's actually it's tackboard material it's a foldable wall that opens up an entire classroom wall so the classroom and the breakout area at the end of the hallway could be one large learning space yep so it's just another another angle of it and this is what I was talking about this is this is actually this is getting a smart board so these are the areas where the boards aren't installed like the non-traditional classrooms so yeah um at the end of the majority of at the end of the majority of neighborhoods a reminder for everybody we have really an open classroom area and additional classroom space learning space the wheelchair lift wheelchair lifts installed yeah so the polished Terrazzo right looks really looks awesome incredible there's some more pictures about rainforest and I'm not sure where this is that Savannah that's a deer yeah [Music] the media center I don't know this is kind of what it looks like looked like when I was last there probably a month ago so I don't know if if this is a lot of the framing is going in they're really starting the um sheetrock yeah I would say this one feels the at least along of all the of all the rooms and then the terrazzo wall panels I showed this I showed this to my daughter and she thought it was very fancy looking okay the teacher prep room so that looks good the floors the floors weren't in the last uh last time I was in there so those look nice and the entry canopies I mentioned all the way around the school you think that was it that's right that's it and then Eric was over to work with the vendors down from Canada for the installation of the loose system in the gymnasium he also has a few other Tech updates he certainly could share um but you can talk a little bit about the loo system which is extremely exciting yeah I'll start there so if you remember one of the most exciting things in the technology package was the gymnasium um I should put it back right yeah yeah um was the gymnasium loose system that's the interactive wall projectors one on the north wall one on the south wall and the students will be able to interact um throw balls at the wall and and have it and I'll show a quick video we actually got to test it today sorry Dr few it was a different time than I planned on it but it wasn't a good it wasn't a good test we'll go back for a better test um um how about Friday morning yeah although they're giving me the controls for it so we could um but yeah this is a very very um impressive system and you'll kind of get a feel for it it doesn't do Justice in pictures um but like I said the professionals that do projector installations Smart Boards all of the stuff for us they had to bring in the loo professionals to do this from Canada and they've spent the last three days here um so it is it is a very very impressive system and so you'll see that there's three components there's actually four components to each one um this big thing right here in the middle uh is just lights uh lights up the uh the area the students are standing it kind of strobes and flashes those can be adjusted if needed um but here's a nice kind of close-up shot of what this looks like it's it's a massive just projector looking device on on the ceiling um and you can kind of see so what this is going to do is there's a projector standing right there um and that projector shines right onto the wall and it's going to shine right onto the padding which we found out is a nice light gray padding so it'll be a good color um to project onto and the students will be able to see the image and you can see that up here um so I'll show you a quick uh just a quick picture of what it'll look like it's a little tough because the wall is not done yet but you can kind of see the uh what it projects onto the screen uh and then we did take a quick video or two um [Music] so yeah so that was that was not the best video I won't take too much time but here we go and so you'll see that those are the kinds of things the students can do um and that's just simple mathematics and um we had that Lou gives you everything they give you the balls to throw at the wall they give you remotes they give you uh they give the teachers um a headset to tie into the audio system so the kids can hear them uh but we didn't inflate the ball so as you saw we flew deflated balls at the uh at the wall um like um specific to that system no we could go we could go to Target or Walmart and buy kickballs yeah it's just one of those nice little things but it's a little tough to see in this video but you can kind of see the lights the lights up here kind of dancing around flashing and doing an exercise program uh it's gonna be really exciting when the room is dark so um but uh yeah so that was a lot of fun to uh to see today and uh um while I wanted to show some exciting things of what it looks like I it it will be much much better when you can see it live with the walls in place and all of that stuff so it is exciting I think the kids are going to have a blast we've already included the PE teachers Dr pepsoski Dr rudel on the kickoff meeting with the company they're going to be doing uh training support all of that stuff so the teachers are gonna are gonna know how to use it better than any of us so is literally fresh install yesterday and today I mean it's just happened so we thought let's let's put this together quickly and again something we wanted to install before the gym floor to Dr Burrell's point so we're gonna uh put it in they're gonna bag the whole system up no dust no um for Friday Friday's walkthrough so that is correct we could get a little use on that that is correct okay thank you thank you thanks Eric I appreciate it anything else okay all right that's it for our Candlewood Lake Elementary uh project update uh next on the agenda was public comment but we did that at the beginning so next is three main points well we have a lot that we covered tonight um so I think the first thing I'd I'd like to highlight the French Exchange program and the presentation that we heard about that I thought that was really fabulous um I had planned to write about the illustrative math curricular tool but I think because we have questions and didn't vote on it and we'll probably discuss it at a second meeting I think we'll hold off on that um I thought actually Joy recommended that we should talk about the new substitute rate structure that we approved there's a lot of people yeah about that so I think that's right so I think that's a good idea and then uh the update on Candlewood Lake Elementary School 67 students are from out of Chico Unified boundary area so the three say again three how what's the their current enrollment is 366. and of that 67 7 are out of Chico Unified boundary area and 299 are within Chico Unified so we're talking 299 students thank you so Julian immediate benefit the only the only prop possible immediate benefit of um don't boo me I'm just asking questions [Laughter] of relocating the Hooker Oak program um it would be to potentially use it for interim housing for the other three schools that we will be able to fully renovate over the next four years if we get a bomb measure because because we we oh okay because we wouldn't be I mean and Inspire wouldn't even need to be moved until I mean if we wanted to honor the 8 million Grant then 2627 I mean it just I'm it just feels like there's a lot of years ahead I mean in advance that we're talking here um for these two benefits that this recommendation has come from the benefit of using the Hooker Oak campus for interim housing during construction of our elementary projects um does a couple of positive things for those schools it lessens the impacts of multi-phased construction on their site and it also decreases the duration of construction on the site therefore bringing the cost down and it has a domino effect meaning you get to the next school faster because your construction period was decreased you're able to do more construction sooner but those schools could be done simultaneously I believe that three of them could be done simultaneously yes and without interim housing they can be done simultaneous without interim housing but each one's duration would be lengthened the duration and the impacts to the campuses that don't have interim housing or we have to provide interim housing on the site for instance let's let's use Chapman as an example so Chapman is a fully operational school and we want to build on their campus we would need to create a portable campus on site at a cost of roughly six million dollars to house those students in while we tear down and renovate their existing buildings or if you had a campus like Hooker Oak available you could relocate those students not spend six million dollars on creating a temporary campus for them tear down rebuild their buildings move them back in so that's the that's the benefit of having a campus that can be utilized for interim housing you're either you're going to pay for it somehow you're either going to pay for it um you know by putting a temporary campus on the campus or you're going to do it in very small multi-phases so you're you're building something new you're moving a certain amount of students in then you're tearing down old and rebuilding that moving students in so it's a leapfrog within the campus which is similar to what we have done and experienced at McManus and at Neil Dao and it was it was impactful to students and teachers and families to to do a multi-phase project and it did extend the timeline for construction substantially um I just want to again for clarification if we had a campus that we were using as interim housing for construction that would preclude it being used to house Inspire right it would until a later date okay so if we had such a campus roughly I mean do you have any idea how long we'd be looking at before Inspire moved I'm gonna let I'm gonna let Laura Nas come up because she's been helping with these and it and brainstorming on these options so I'm going to let her come up and help me with that by all mean thank you so with the assumption that a bond passed in November of 2024 and we had done some pre-work out of the current Bond allocation it was our expectation that the students could be in to the campuses before 2027 and the idea would be then that space could be available for inspire and they could leverage their eight million dollars on perhaps some upgrades and renovation at Hooker Oak the devil's in the details of course but that is the Assumption um that we're making now and as Julie said running several projects in parallel in order to um move those elementary schools a little more quickly thank you so there's a for doing that because of the temporary housing versus relocation but there's not a Time benefit like there's a Time benefit for actual construction but there's it doesn't mean that we're going to be able to finish our facilities master plan list faster like we'll get through the next three schools but we're still gonna have to wait several years before we con can do another um uh full renovation right so well I guess what I'm saying is it doesn't matter it doesn't matter to me I mean to me it doesn't seem to matter if we have the three schools that we will get to to do the full renovation on uh get done in 18 months versus 30 months because it there's no rush what are we rushing towards I said besides the cost savings the one-time cost savings I understand that and if you're talking six million dollars maybe per school or maybe it's 15 million per school you know so that's so there's a time I mean there's no there's no reason to rush through it except for there's a cost savings associated with that and I'm just not sure that I'm convinced by any of the research that's been done or presented so far that that cost that cost savings is worth making massive changes to school programs right now [Applause] finally I got some Applause so the only um the only comment that I would have um trustee Dolby is that you would have increased costs over what we're showing um here so these costs do not include the additional costs shown on this slide of 15 per school so my assumption and Laura you can correct me if I'm wrong is that these two scenarios where you can perform one large one mid size and one small assuming the 225 million dollar Bond you will not be able to do that because you will have increased costs for those projects so these scenarios would not work so what are the increased costs if so if we take option six effectively kicking the can down the road what are the increased costs at that point can you please enumerate them right so here it says both Rosedale and Parkview can be built on available land on their own site multi-phased implementation that we just talked about increases the cost by approximately 15 percent per school so what is that 15 percent increase to it's yeah increases a 50 million dollar project to a 57 million dollar project and how many 50 million dollar projects are we looking at yes I think we're going to go to this slide where at least I'm out for you if you exclude Hooker Oak from the conversation we have a 150 million dollar 267.5 million dollar campuses and won 84 million dollars so at 319 million dollars plus or minus times 15 there's probably somewhere between 30 and 40 million dollars of excess costs from the escalation costs of extended time the contract time General conditions and all of those things as well as the costs of interim housing again we are in the theoretical cost structure world right now so you know I I wouldn't want my feet held to the fire but we've seen something around 30 percent escalation over the last two years and so the costs are are pretty real and and staggering when you get up into those millions of dollars and then what's the 50 is it 50 million the savings uh hookah Rogue campus removed from facilities master plan implementation at a savings of 50 million dollars so um if Hooker Oak remains in the master plan the Assumption was that it would be brought up to the same level as your other campuses which would equate to a full replacement if we did as trustee dalby mentioned or maybe it was trustee Robinson the um light touch like we talked at Citrus that number I I could imagine would be less however both Citrus and Hooker Oak like the other campuses require some sort of interim housing especially on those sites because as single buildings are predominantly single buildings there we can't be hopscotching people around so we would probably have to build some sort of interim campus for either or both of those or spread it out again over tiny chunks over three to four summers in order to complete the work so [Applause] is that what you estimated at 50 million that is estimated and it includes the district's soft costs on top of raw construction costs and then the 35 million dollar that we just calculated a couple of minutes ago would that be included in the 50 million or would that be separate we calculated out 35 million dollars associated with a 15 increase that would be in addition that'd be in addition yeah so so by doing nothing right out of the shoot we're at least looking at it looks like about 85 million dollars if we choose option six that we know pretty concretely it's going to cost an extra 85 million dollars so if I got that correctly so 35 million we added 15 across the board to the projects and you're telling me there's a savings we would not benefit from a 50 million dollars so that's 85 million dollars I think we're missing um a key element is we would be able to do some work so we're adding the 15 on the total that doesn't we would likely be able to to take care of two schools at these model costs so the 15 would be on the other to maybe not not all four yeah yeah so instead of 35 million it's uh 17 and a half 18 million dollars correct so 70 million dollars is what it'll cost minimum if we do nothing tonight approximally potentially yes thank you that 70 million would include at some point uh the upgrade restoration of hooker Road yes yes okay which we don't need because we have excess capacity in the middle of town go ahead um Julie you mentioned if we were just to you mentioned Chapman as an example and needing to provide housing during construction at Chapman if you could temporarily house at the uh Hooker Oak campus could you still continue to use hookarok as its regular program and housing Portables on the Hooker Oak site for those Chapman kids you were going to house them in Portables it the cost would be the same no matter where you put it you could you could do it on another campus I don't know why you why you would but you could so you could do the complete temporary housing with Portables at the Chapman site without having to um do anything with the hook or Oak site other than the allowed modernization yes you could at a at a cost of about six million dollars and um I believe at the March meeting we had discussion about there is money left over in our last Bond and that we could use those dollars for both Citrus and Hooker Oak to the modernization that's allowed so the board decided at our last meeting at I don't have the language in front of me to allow the use of those remaining Bond dollars for potential light touch upgrade at Citrus Elementary School transitional kindergarten Safety and Security and possible restroom Renovations within the district we have not gotten to the point of allocating those funds within the master plan for me to answer whether hook or Oak could also be covered within those remaining bond funds this time yeah oh any way of putting that together while we're meeting the cost meaning meaning the last time we said see what you can do with the many doing the things you just mentioned if we added the Hooker Oak new paint for lack of a better term is there any way of knowing if we could do that I'd be very hesitant to throw out that information without preparing fully will you keep my checkbook for me I'm not good at planning ahead I'm going to actually switch attack for a second here because I know that we did some public Outreach together information about facilities Master Plan update and clearly we missed the mark somewhere because we surprised a lot of people so could you you or Miss daily refresh my memory about what the public input Gathering was like and yeah so I think about how what we can do in the future to have more concrete and long-term engagement from from parents at all the schools that's late for now what did we do to get public input sure I'd be happy to discuss that that um we had several Community engagement meetings we had a meeting scheduled for every school within the district that we performed in the late fall of this year we have presented all of the information gathered from those meetings to the board we've also performed multiple surveys to the public and to those School communities namely the the teachers and the other staff on each campus and we've also provided that data to the board it culminated in the presentation on March 8th if you recall lots of slides regarding what we learned from the school sites and what we learned from walks with their staff and principals feedback from parents and ptas I I do recall um and this is not on you this is on us the problem is that we ask for additional options and the ones that came back um once we even have an option on the table about something as momentous as either closing or moving a school somewhere else in the future we need to find a way to get lots of input from those parents because I suspect I really do that if we had a chance to talk this out with everybody um you guys we were talking about this all night I'm talking to the audience I'm not you I apologize um understand that we are in some straights here right we have some some facilities questions that have to get answered otherwise we end up with Elementary School students in 100 year old buildings and I suspect that if we had found a better way to actually engage our parents and our students in creating this solution that we wouldn't be facing um people who feel like you know we're pulling the rug out from under them which is definitely not our intention [Applause] and I apologize to you Mrs there's not much of a question in there I'm not trying to put you on Twitter again this is a planning issue that we need to address going forward in terms of how to gather that input so I apologize to you the public who here today because I if someone told me that my students school was considered for closure and I only had you know A month's notice I'd I'd be upset too for sure [Applause] but that doesn't negate the very real issue we have in terms of facilities upcoming costs and our and our aging infrastructure so It's Tricky and I hope everyone sees that it's we're in a quandary here for real Julie do you still have um your present deserve more to your presentation um no there isn't other than the slides that we we briefly touched on sorry I'm going the wrong direction at the end um the possible scenarios with the assumed Bond measure future Bond measure of 225.

so trying to provide the board with a possible scenarios for the next Bond construction where we laid out that you could do one large one mid-size one small school utilizing our model capacity schools that we're using for planning purposes and or to mid-size and one small it does show that the which schools would be deferred to Future Bond and then the slide that shows the the costs that the district incurs for not having interim housing available and and or for multi-phased project implementation at our elementary schools and that concludes my presentation thank you very much [Applause] are there any additional questions from the board I probably still have a whole bunch floating around in my head that haven't all come together yet but that's how it goes sometimes we also um I think just for the the crowd to hear this um we do at the very least see all of the emails that come in there was as of this afternoon more than 130 that have come in since Friday it's a very impressive turnout um and we ask questions to District staff frequently based on our our own internal monologue as well as questions that come from the public so those public comments from emails that were sent in were very valuable for us to get information even ahead of this presentation via email to have some of those really good questions that are being asked by the public um to have some more information coming into this conversation as well um I don't think I have any other questions from staff which would move us to the public comment um portion of our um uh order and we have uh let's see we have 42 speakers signed up our our typical rules are to allow each speaker three minutes to speak and limit it to 30 minutes of public comment per item which would be 10 speakers um I promise you all of you have been heard um and I would in no way want to discourage anybody from taking the microphone um so I uh feel like we can hear from a group and follow our rules and um and perhaps we suspend our rules at some point to hear more speakers or if there is a sense from the board that we're ready to take some kind of action we can move forward with taking action after our typical 30 minutes of public comment so I am going to um I'm going to uh start with some names and we'll just start going down the list from there and uh when the 30 minutes is up um we can revisit our rules and determine how we want to move forward from there I need some water sorry major dry mouth problems luckily it's your turn to talk and not mine um okay and so I'm going to uh call call names and I'm going to name who's going to be up after that person just so that you're ready to to speak and then um when you hear the Bell from Mr Hanlon that'll be your indication that you have 30 seconds left to wrap up your comments that'll be where you're at the two and a half minute Mark and so that's your indication that you're almost out of time we're not fancy and don't put up timers on the screen most folks bring up their phones so they can time themselves as well it's not scary even though it feels scary and I hope that you speak your truth and we want to hear from you so with that I will call up Lauren in I'm gonna say your last name wrong please please remind me on this is your name and after that will be Nancy Marie um all right my name is Lauren inaway and I have three current students at Rosedale Elementary School and please don't we have a very modest delegation from Rosedale tonight please don't take that as apathy on our part It's just literally the busiest week of our school calendar we've divided we've delegated um so reflecting back on the March 8th board meeting as a parent that was difficult to have to sit and see the stark contrast between the schools who came up and we're thanking you for the renovations that have already been done for their campuses and those of us who are still waiting our turn um if you put a bond measure on the 2024 ballot we've already heard you've got enough to do maybe three schools I am asking you to please prioritize Rosedale um you already are very well aware of the state of our campus it is comparable to the other five schools that are up and so I'm going to focus on three other reasons that I think Rosedale should be prioritized the first is that we currently have a school with the highest enrollment of the six under consideration and would allow you to impact the most students um with a single project the second is our student body represents an amazing cross-section of our Chico community on our most recent sarc report we have 74.7 of our students who are identified by their families as students of color and this would allow you to put a greater focus on Equity as you're dividing out those facilities dollars our school was bumped down in the 2019 revamp of the facilities plan and that was very frustrating for many in our community because it was felt that the district was prioritizing whether this was intended explicitly or not to prioritize the needs of non-minority more affluent students we provide an option also for students and families who might otherwise choose to enroll their students outside of the district and it can be difficult with the state of our current facilities to compete with other programs like core Butte or chico Country Day School who have managed their facilities funding in the last four to seven years to provide really nice see functional campuses for their students so again please consider Rosedale for this next rollout of Renovations we would greatly consider your consideration in that matter thank you all right next we have Nancy Marie followed by Laura Holman sorry hello dear Chico Unified School Board I am currently a teacher at Neil Dow school and I stand with Hooker Oak and ask that you choose option six tonight last Thursday Neil Dao found out there was a proposal to have the hook rope program moved to or take over our School site this came as a complete shock working in good faith our schools should have been contacted prior to these options being made or even discussed the pros and cons on the six options do not talk about the negative impact these changes were will have on our school culture the pros and cons listed are focused on facilities and money they failed to mention the negative impact these changes will have on staff families and most importantly students the impact options of one through five will be massive and it will disrupt the education path of many students our school Embraces all students and we've worked hard as a team to create a safe rigorous and positive learning environment there's documented evidence that our students have made extreme growth in the past through year three years there seems to be a major focus on a school needing housing during construction Neil down and Marigold did not have housing during our construction it was difficult but it is possible to stay on your site I would like to be assured the suggestion was not made because it will make things easier for construction workers or the facilities team the education and continuity of our students should really be the priority making the wrong decision hey folks please making the wrong decision tonight will mean that students will have to change schools or return to their neighborhood schools the students who will be the most impacted will be the ones who do not have Advocates the student the ones who are disadvantaged and the ones who have suffered the most trauma busing will have to be offered to all of these students and that's another cost that hasn't been talked about the real Financial loss will happen when most of these students will choose to go to a charter school rather than stay within Chico Unified that is a reality in closing sorry I'm retiring so I'm getting emotional I've been a teacher in this district for 37 years I love my job I love my students and I love my school please save our school and also the school cultures of Hooker Oak McManus and Chapman work together with the hook rope team they have many ideas that will put students first and still solve the problems at hand vote for option six to ease the minds of parents teachers and students let the end of the school year end on a positive note for all not with a cloud of uncertainty honor our District's model every student every day thank you foreign I don't want to discourage anybody from expressing their support ever I'm only concerned about when speakers have to pause it takes away seconds from their speaking time so just with the cheers I'm not discouraging cheering trust me but but just be mindful of how that might be taken away how long to explain her time's not even started yet sir thank you thank you for your concern okay thank you ready okay so um hello I'm the mtss title one teacher and DLC rep for her group Hooker Oak schools were on the Hidden Treasures of Chico charming and quaint it represents the very soul of Chico as a teacher candidate in 1997 one of my field trips was to visit the Nature Center of Hook Road the assignment was meant to instill how important it is to include real-life thematic-based instruction to awaken excite and expand the minds of our students Hooker Oak Embraces this important job every day of note hookero continues to partner with Chico State as an enriching training ground for future teachers the Nature Center is just one example of how our students are encouraged to embrace authentic learning experiences not only do our students enjoy learning in and caring for a thriving and Serene Nature Center with a bog and a small Creek they also attend a school garden with weekly lessons from a professional Gardener in addition numerous field trips at every grade level are frequently scheduled to authenticate and reinforce content taught in the classroom embracing the whole child approach Hooker Oak has established Wellness PBIS and learning center teams dedicated to ensuring our students are academically social emotionally and behaviorally the best they can be every single day when a student needs support is with a very caring and specialized team approach because of this our teachers and staff worked hard to earn our school the highest PBIS Award of Platinum Status in one year's time in addition our Learning Center paired with the special ed team and reading Specialists support academic intervention needs for reading and math foundational skills our children never walk alone and neither do our parents Hooker Oak is a school of Ingenuity and creativity as an example of this we recognize that an area of need is to build foundational skills in math therefore we piloted a research-based universal screener for a number since last year for all of our K-5 students to determine a baseline of skills established and needed to succeed in math we had a hundred percent buy-in from our teachers data reviewed from this screener has been critical to knowing where the areas of need are and where to apply intervention to build those skills before coming to Hooker Oak I worked at another school as a special ed teacher and in the private sector for 10 years never have I worked both outside of and within a school setting that has such a dedicated cohesive and professional team as a school in conclusion the attributes of our Mighty Oak School are endless and will be a huge loss to the chico Community to disband or disrupt this incredibly successful community of Learners and Educators this amazing school is a necessary and historic representative of our beloved Chico thank you [Applause] up next we have Beth Bradley followed by Elizabeth Thrasher Wheatley oh no that's not terrible okay thank you uh if you're here to support Rosedale raise again please there was a lot of you last time though yeah and the time before yeah yeah and your emails no thank you thanks for being here um okay so we'll move on to Elizabeth Thrasher Wheatley sorry oh a call we don't have the calling option anymore okay um then we'll move to Tracy did thank you tokowski thekowski [Applause] uh followed by Sarah van hoot hi my name is Tracy dikowski I have the pleasure of representing Hooker Oak staff tonight we would like to thank the board for not taking action last month we appreciate that you recognize the importance of giving extra time and research to this very important matter as a staff we would like to respectfully ask to stay at our site we understand that we would not be able to have a complete remodel of our site and would be open to having some sprucing up done at our site when the funds were available our students have been through so much in their little lifetime first the campfire then covid now our students may be asked to leave the comfort and security of their school to move to an unknown site while merging with another site please take the social and emotional well-being of our students into account and allow us to stay at our site the program at Hooker Oak exists is successful because we have the ability to utilize every inch of our site for our educational purposes our program would not be as successful at a shared campus if we had to plan lessons and activities around a program that has a different philosophy than ours from the Royal Dance Academy performance to scoop and Sarah made to an art show we enjoy Gathering as a community and celebrating together as the family we are sorry our site is so much more than just teachers and classrooms it includes office staff families and para professionals who understand what our program specifically provides for our students please choose option six thank you for your time and consideration [Applause] hi my name is Sarah van Hout I'm a Chico Unified parent I have two students at Hooker Oak Elementary School a second grader and a fifth grader I'm here to express my support for our school and concern for its future under the recommendations being presented by the facilities Department it is important that you understand our program and the choice you are being asked to make in either moving it off its existing campus or eliminating the program altogether Hooker Oak is the entire reason my students are at Chico Unified we did not take the decision lightly and we were thrilled to find the option of the program at Hooker Oak I think Chico Unified Prides itself on meeting the needs of every student in the district by offering a variety of alternative programs we have fantastic elementary schools in this district and this one fit our needs and best aligned with our educational philosophy the educational experience my children have had at hook Rook has been an integral part of their success as students my fifth graders test scores have qualified him for honors classes at Chico Junior in the fall I have been an active member of our parent-teacher organization throughout the course of my kids time Hooker Oak we host events throughout the year to bolster our school community and enrich our students curriculum just since the April 5th board meeting our students performed with the Royal Dance Academy after learning and rehearsing for two weeks we hosted a daytime performance on our campus it brought parents grandparents family friends to watch their students dance our blacktop was full of people and the energy on campus was electric on Friday April 21st we hosted our annual scoop and serenade an art show uh students practice with their music teacher for weeks and each grade performed a song over a hundred pieces of art created by our students were on display as well as group art pieces created by each classroom once again our black top was full we had scoops of ice cream for sale donated by a parent who owns a local ice cream shop and we sold over 750 scoops of ice cream our school Community is strong and thriving it is not dying on the vine and the further we get away from this disruption of the pandemic we are seeing that strength return I could go on and on about the benefits of the school and its program I trust that you know how valuable it is to our district please do not make cook an afterthought our campus needs work yes it has needed detention for a long time our program deserves its own campus as do all the other elementary schools in our district in my opinion displacing the over 300 students at Hooker Oak is not a viable option let alone the Myriad of other questions and potential problems that will arise in regards to disruption of students on other campuses we heard loud and clear at the board meeting on April 5th this board had no intention of closing our program I know that Hooker Oak is a valuable asset to Chico Unified and I hope that you will show that our district truly values our school by keeping us on our campus where our program can continue to thrive it is in the best interest of the entire Elementary School community in Chico Unified for hook rope to remain status quo thank you for your thoughtful and your thoughtful consideration for the future of Hooker Oak Elementary School [Applause] I'm going to call Reagan Lyon followed by Claire MossMan [Applause] hi um in my opinion I think that Neil die should say Neil Dao there's been a lot of memories in you though and I have a younger sister she's in third grade and I wanted to experience a full year at neodel I don't want her to share the school with um hooker elk or I have kneeldao completely replaced by it I think that you know that was a good school and I don't think my sister deserves to um but you moved to a different school and the um a lot of kids would have to get kicked out of no doubt and they would and they usually like sometimes they walk and because their parents can't drive them and going to a different school would be very stressful because parents wouldn't like some parents wouldn't be able to drive or they would have to take a bus and that's hard and um my I would want my sister to experience a full year at no doubt because it's an amazing school um it it's really nice and it's everyone there's an eye she has friends and I don't want her to get separated from her friends and I feel like everyone deserves I feel like neodad deserves to uh be a skull [Applause] uh Claire Mossman followed by Audrey Lyon hi my name is Claire Mossman as you discuss remodeling school facilities and maybe even building new ones I'm asking that you consider recognizing the rights of students to have a basic expectation of privacy possibly that means creating a neutral area for those who are uncomfortable or confused with their gender or maybe that means creating an adequate single-use restroom and changing areas for anyone that needs them I am a 16 year old sophomore at Pleasant Valley High School my friends and I are expected to use locker rooms bathrooms and even showers that are all open to boys we are exploited and violated for other people's agendas I really didn't want to be here and I really don't want to have to fight but I will the adults in charge are failing us when you went to school the girls room was just the girls room however today when we need to use the bathroom maybe just to pee or maybe to have to deal with painful feminine and hygiene issues we do so knowing that any moment a boy might walk in on us this is awful when changing in the locker rooms girls try to do so as fast as possible before the boys in the room walk past to find us naked come on please have some compassion during my years in junior high and high school I have seen the valley nearly flooded from Bad engineering when the lake Oroville Spillway failed I I saw forest fires destroyed thousands of homes and businesses due to bad Forest management we lost our beautiful paradise and our own home house in the campfire because of corporate greed and failure we then spend the most of two years being isolated from family and friends having those terrible Zoom meetings instead of school and force hide our faces behind masks because of government screw-ups and cover-ups now I have to fight to have to not have to expose myself to boys I still have two years left in high school and I can't even imagine what new Horrors are in store for store for me I'm so thankful for God's promise that I can do all things through Christ which strengthen strengtheneth me Philippians 4 13.

I should be hanging out with my friends listening to music doing my homework or playing with my dogs instead I have to be here as a teenage girl fighting to keep my dignity and Faith because the school board wants to take them from me thank you Audrey Lyon followed by Katie Yancey Audrey's next hi my name is um Audrey Lyon and I've been at nail doll for almost five years and these five years are the best that I've ever had I I have friends that go here amazing friends too and I don't want to have to be put at a random school and be separated anyways I love Neil dots the best school I'd probably ever experience and I don't want something I love to be taken away neither would you look I love this place and I don't want to go to and I don't want anyone would want your favorite place to go but what I'm trying to say is I'm sure a lot of people like mailed out and we don't want it to be taken away because it's something we love and we appreciate because we are dragons and I know half of the people here are so please board don't take something away from people that many others love just because we are an option doesn't mean that we or any other school should have to worry about another school coming and taking this away that's not fair to anyone even Hooker Oak and board you might think that it's helping more people than harming but you're wrong it's actually harming more people than it is helping so please please don't take Neil doll away from me or anyone else so save Neil doll so we can be happy foreign up next is Katie Yancey followed by Nicole Phillips good evening my name is Katie Yancey I've gone by Miss Pendergrass Miss P sometimes mom um I am a teacher at ocroke and I just keep asking myself how did we get here how are we here um after the campfire and after these multiple years of covid and now we're like ready and we're back and we're ready to rebuild and at the end of the year at the very end of the year it's like you might not have school to come back to and then it's you know it feels like we're being we're being pitted against other schools when we're hearing that other schools are mad at us want to do what we do we are unique I drive all the way from Orland every day to be here to be at the Hook Road campus because it is what I love I could teach anywhere I could teach in my home my home City I choose to drive from Orland here every day because of my community because of my school and I am asking that you keep Hooker Oak we don't need 50 million dollars in renovations you don't need to level our school let us do what we do let us continue to rebuild let us grow our community and our program back because we are coming back and we are coming back better than ever I guarantee it thank you [Applause] hi Nicole Phillips um so my name is Nicole Phillips this is my daughter Avery um we have been at Hooker Oak since the beginning um I knew from the minute I toured that school that that would be our home um I've been involved every year since we have started there um I think I'm on that campus more than I'm at home just doing activities and PTO working in the classroom um my daughter's phasing out but there's a lot of my friends are sitting behind me tonight whose kids still want to be a part of that program and they still want to be a part of that school and they don't want to have to go to another campus well we have it hook heroic nobody else has in this District it's Unique my daughter wouldn't have thrived the way she's thrived in any other typical learning environment and I know that they've set her up for the best success that she can have going to Bidwell next year she's a student ambassador at Hooker Oak she's come to the board and spoke on hooker Oak's behalf two years in a row and she's involved in band um and she's even done the TK night where she gets to explain the uniqueness of our school so I am pleading along with all of these other families behind us do not take 300 families and displaces like Katie said after the campfire and after covid please please do not take this away from us you guys couldn't control those events that happen but you guys can control this tonight so please pick number six and leave her crochet status quo thank you [Applause] so that was our 10th speaker but we do still have four minutes left in our 30 minutes so I'm gonna call the next speaker on the list which is um Kevin Hudson sorry if I say your name wrong it's like my least favorite thing in the world just to mispronounce names uh good evening Chico Unified School Board my name is Kevin newts and I'm here alongside my wife Shelby our daughter Matilda is in the first grade with Nancy Marie and I think she said it perfectly our kids can't go through any more disruption whether it's the children of Hooker Oak or the children of Neil Dao Neil Dao is much more than an elementary school to many in our neighborhood in addition to providing best-in-class education Neil Dow provides stability support and improves the overall health of our children with their meal program and Social Services in addition Neil Dow provides a place for after-school care and extracurricular activities for example my wife Shelby is a Girl Scout Troop leader to nine Neil Dow students and used Neil Dow Elementary as their meeting space if option 2A or 2B are passed from the facility's master plan we fear these services will be discontinued in our neighborhood children we'll suffer extreme hardship for these reasons we stand with hooker up community and urge you to embrace option six thank you [Applause] all right um just for my information could you please raise your hand if you are here to uh because you submitted a speaker speaker card raise your hand and of you folks that are raising your hands uh can you stand up if you're here to support status quo for Hooker Oak [Applause] and then in addition to that if you're here to support that as well please also stand up if you're here to support status quo for hooker please stand up [Applause] [Music] [Applause] I just want you all to know that you're seen and heard um and so we are at the end of our 30 minutes for public comment um and I am compelled to ask if there is any motion from the board I'm going to move the board adopt option six Robinson I'll second that motion I have a substitute motion okay we have a substitute motion on the floor we're not on the floor yet sorry before I roll this out I'm gonna make some comments um I have always tried to cast a vote that I felt that I can be proud of I think that we are faced tonight with very limited Financial Resources we have honestly as we've been shown by staff for years and I've sat through many meetings where we've been briefed on this subject we have too many old dilapidated schools in the center of town where we actually need the schools is on the outskirts of town now I never like to be the unpopular person in the room but I've done it before and I'll probably do it again I see serious problems with the location of inspire High School of dilapidated Portable Buildings right in the middle of Chico High which is going to keep Chico high from being able to expand its career in technical education programs and across town PV high school has benefited tremendously from the expansion of careertech on that campus we have all applauded it and we've thought it's great that can't happen on Chico High because of the presence of those old dilapidated buildings that Inspire High School is stuck on there we all know every single one of us that Inspire brings value to the community and while and but but at the high school level we have a lopsided Community right now because PV is enjoying the freedom to develop its campus and offer spectacular you know CTE course offerings Chico high is limited across town because it's bound together with Inspire which is not a good situation and we all know that every single one of us so a lot of you aren't going to agree with this but I've thought a lot about this I have meditated on this topic so I again I hate to be the unpopular person in a room but I'm going to make a substitute motion and it goes as follows uh Point number one the Hands-On and thematic learning program will remain untouched at the Hooker Oak campus through the 2024 and 25 school year so that's over two years of status quo if you will this in my view would enable Inspire High School to hold on to the eight million dollars that they're going to lose if we do nothing tonight if we Embrace option six and what I'm proposing would enable them to hold on to that but it would enable hooker road to remain in place through the 2024-2025 school year Point number two Chico Unified will phase out the Hands-On and thematic learning program in its current form at the hookero campus at the completion of the 24-25 school year school year basically that's equivalent to option five Point number three the superintendent will form a working group to discuss and propose solutions to the board for the continuation of the Hands-On and thematic learning program at Chico Unified School District so that's my three-part motion question Matt yes before I consider a second um would you be open to the idea of not using hook or Oak as a um I guess what you're saying is leave it as as it is so it would not be used for any interim housing projects correct could there be a need for interim housing after the 2024-25 school year so there it could be utilized for a Durham housing after 2024 and 25.

but as of now in your motion it would stay status quo for the next two years two academic years two plus yeah two plus the rest of this year foreign so the scenario that was described and feared earlier of finding out that you're going to lose your school in a month no one's proposing motions on the table is there a second now okay so we have a motion by Mr tennis in a second by member konkin which opens uh this item up sorry this motion up for discussion as well excuse me and we'll have to vote on this one first before we could return to the first motion unless this motion were to pass very briefly I won't add to what I've already said but I'll say that I support school choice sometimes charter schools are a good option as many people believe no and so I'd like to keep the Inspire option available because I've heard from many families that it's a valuable valuable thing yeah um foreign talking about this from a dollars and sense point of view as well I do want to reiterate that um ultimately our general fund funding comes from attendance and there are programs that offer something comparable or in the same vein as hookarook at least and I do think there's a real threat of severely diminished funding if we move hook broke at all I think that if we're talking about it from just uh just a money point of view and I know there's a lot more than it to that I still think it's not a very wise idea because it'll probably push enrollment down over the next couple of years [Applause] and so I'm going to keep going just because I know everyone knows it but I want to put on the record one more time I agree with many of the speakers that the Hands-On thematic learning is one of the best programs super unified has the elementary level and one of the most effective [Applause] what would the committee look like that would study the future of like a thematic learning model at another site and I'm imagining that much time and would be given to trying to determine where the best site would be right um I'm actually going to jump on that uh so um if if there was a committee formed to discuss and explore the possibility of um real reallocating a campus um for for a different need and moving that program to a different school so effectively closing a school but without actually closing down the program um the California Department of Education wow I need more water um has uh guidelines when a district is facing decisions to potentially close a campus and that tends to include the recommendation strong recommendation and I've been through this with another District as a teacher by the way to form a district advisory committee um that would actually be subject to the brown act and so they would be open public meetings just like this one there would be posted agendas just like ours and that committee would be made up of ideally a very diverse number of stakeholders probably no more than 12 people that would include parents community members business business owners just the full array staff Consultants demographers Etc um that's that's generally when a decision as heavy as repurposing or closing a campus that the state recommends that would really improve you know the discussion about transparency and getting input and creative solution fact-finding and all of those things but it would have to be a a long-term process where everybody is involved in the discussion in an open forum can I add any Clarity to that [Music] um no not really I mean I I guess since we're in the mode of discussion I would I mean I I see extreme value in what Hooker Oak the Thematic learning I I fully support that and I I see opportunity for for growth and I see that we're faced with um uh all sorts of challenges and all sorts of groups being affected here so I'm trying to um weigh in with common sense and see what's the best option or what is the better option for most people and it's really hard I like the idea of a committee that's going to study this and not make a rash decision but really weigh in and with members from the community teachers um basically an Advisory board that would study this and I see it as an opportunity for potential growth and for Hooker Oak I see it I see it as an opportunity for for growing in our community do we have any further discussion on this one more thought oh yeah go ahead sorry um and I mean along those same lines of um using the analogy like the church isn't about the building it's about the people and it's about the beliefs that you possess and likewise I think Hooker Oak I mean it's clear that it's about the people and it's about the beliefs and their core values and I I don't believe it's about the building that they're in and I think that this is just an opportunity for them to be something bigger in our community thank you check my present me uh yeah sorry I'm gathering my thoughts they'll come eventually um I agree that ideally I would love to see the growth program get a bigger stage because I think it is something a lot of students in our community would benefit from however there is a lot of Merit to considering the amount of disruption that would occur not only for them but for the yieldow community as well and this I mean this is tough right because we're basically balancing students now against the potential of having great facilities down the road I do think we can find a way to get those great facilities without um this kind of a sudden shift but from what I understand it wouldn't be upsetting shift right we're talking about two maybe plus years but the way the decision has been arrived at I mean if we had a standing committee or a district advisory committee that was composed of all the analytic schools and we had come to them a year ago and said hey we see this facilities problem coming up we need you guys to go back to your school sites and get input and then it's up to you guys make a recommendation because then they have buy-in right like it's their idea and if all the school the elementary schools come to say okay you know most of us think that closing this campus has to happen and it hurts but here's why then they've already had a year to explain it right and to back it up and to absorb that and we Serve the People right we need to make sure that and I think the district has needed to work out for a while we need to find better ways to really engage with those in those conversations that's what I meant lesson um I had my hand up for next just to remind us that the timeline for upgrade for the the four schools that we have already identified is anywhere from seven to ten years out so having those discussions during that time that doesn't involve those four schools is kind of not the point we're here to talk about our facilities master plan and deciding which for schools and how that's going to look just just to get us back on track of where we are making a decision tonight so I would ask anyone up here who's bold enough to answer of my colleagues what is your plan for the future of Chico High the future of inspire high and their eight million dollars what is your plan for the eight million dollars that's going to go away from them if we do this I can tell you right now that that there are still ideas floating and there is still a lot of input together and frankly I don't have enough information to make an informed decision as heavy and as big as this for for the hooker up campus tonight and I've been in a lot of meetings in the last four months I just want to by not making a decision you are actually making a decision you're making a decision that inspires you to lose their 8 million that we don't have somewhere for them to go I think that I think that you you saying that is actually false I literally just told you that that there are more ideas and I believe that there are more Creative Solutions out there that you haven't actually thought about just yet so why don't you just hold on to your choice and what like what what are those moves I'm not prepared to share that here because there aren't any okay you can call me a liar if you want to but I'm telling you there are more things I don't think you're lying but I think that you're you're kidding yourself if you think that that somehow it's all going to be okay and and foreign so is there further discussion no one [Applause] nobody would want to close their school nobody would want to lose their school even if it's two years away you know uh but the point is I have been around to just about every one of our elementary schools okay and they are in bad shape we've got doors falling off the hinges we've got you know the glazing around the outside of the windows that's crumbling out all all across across town you know we need a bond yes but we also need to identify where our areas of greatest need are and population wise when it comes to the students they're not in the center of town they're on the outskirts of town where the development is and so that's why I'm saying what I'm saying I can I can honestly say that um I I do I I do recognize and I appreciate the thought of taking a much longer period of time having you know stakeholder meetings and and working groups to solve these these conundrums that we're facing um I I don't think that we have enough information to put any kind of firm timeline on that frankly and that that was going to have to come forward as a as a different agenda item possibly at a future meeting and it doesn't have to be about closing Hooker Oak in 2030 or 2025 but it does need to be about um how do we move forward to find solutions to some of these problems that we're facing um and so uh that's that's why I'm gonna vote no on this this second motion uh do you have a question like clarifying questions okay uh my name is Olivia Wilson and I have a student at Hooker Oak I'm also a CPA and I realize that there's a lot of financial implications of the decisions you're making and I find those incredibly important as well two questions I had were first of all you had mentioned that there was funding potentially available to the Charter School at the discretion of the district should a future bond be passed I am wondering if there would be a possibility of that money than being combined with 8 million currently available to inspire to then use to find a facility build a facility and so forth that is one question I have and then the second question I have is whether or not Inspire has voiced interest in hookero campus thank you it's great questions the same questions I've had which is why I don't feel prepared to make that kind of decision tonight like this they want no part of the debate because they don't want to be seen it's a bad place [Applause] that said I'd like to call the question um we have a motion to call the question uh we have a second um I'll also say yes which is uh majority of it so um we're gonna call the question the motion on the table is two um sorry I'm just gonna I'm almost out of water thank you I'm talking too much it's in water for me I'm just reiterating the motion that's currently on the table to be up for a vote first is Mr tennis's motion to keep the hook program status quo through the 24-25 school year phase out um phase off the program from the campus at the end of the 2025 school year and then simultaneously develop a working group or a committee of some sort to determine how we move forward with that program did I summarize that properly one two three I took notes I just I'm sorry I was I was uh not paying attention to you madam president I was reading the Inspire letter to us which said nothing like what you articulated that it said I'm sorry we've moved the vote so we are moving on Inspire has had no conversations with the district regarding Hooker Oak facilities and we feel it would not be appropriate for us to speak at a time when the Hooker Oak Community should have the floor okay [Applause] so Mr China since this was your motion we'll start with you I on the um what do you call this your it's your alternative motion I dalby no Robinson no konk and I donate all right it fails so um that brings us to the first motion [Applause] um the first motion is to uh go with option six um I would like to maybe get some clarification Mr Lido so um option six being status quo for Hooker Oak with this facilities Master Plan update yes so under my motion that I can summarize if I need to um hook rope would remain the home of the hands automatic learning program it would hook up campus yes a group campus it would remain in the facilities master plan at some point for renovation we do need to at some point create some kind of Community Committee like this to address the upcoming facilities problems but I think that's outside of the scope of this particular motion we bring it up later and president I just to remind and some of you may not have been around long enough to do we do update our facilities master plan every three years so basically that's when we would be doing what you're implying should be done again we do it in three years and the three years is by board prerogative we could we could address we could look at that more often if we felt the need to do so if we had a safe standing committee that reported to us yearly about you know what we were we could that's true all kinds of options okay but this motion is motion is just keep things as they are for now um going with my theme of starting with who made the motion um I'll start with you Mr Lindo oh unless there's a need for the discussion I'm sorry I just have a question and I don't know when I would ask this but when would we propose discussing um how we'll move forward with Inspire slash Chico hi that is certainly a separate emotion that could be made it could be made during board member um the opportunity to request an agenda item well we could have we could have more than one motion on this item if somebody's prepared to make such a motion tonight um I don't know personally that I'm prepared to make that particular motion for myself tonight but if somebody else has already formulated it and you know the board agrees with it then yeah but on any on this agenda item there could be multiple emotions yeah I guess I've not really prepared to make that motion but I I mean I just I we're leaving out a big group of people tonight and I want to acknowledge that I think that perhaps it would be useful as they said that um right now hook Rook should have the floor that wasn't their letter um that perhaps after we make this decision we could invite Inspire to a separate meeting to have that discussion [Applause] so just be clear that's not part of the motion it's a recommendation for us to consider for a future agenda item yeah right now we have emotional segment we're having discussion um and or even informally by staff to you know reach out and continue conversations with inspire and she died yeah thank you um okay are we prepared to do the vote thank you Mr Orlando Eye tennis Epstein Dolby I Robinson I konkanipstein okay well it passes [Applause] okay so we still have actually Madam president I'm just going to say I really object to a board member not going on the record [Applause] so we're not done with this item the case for hooker Hook is settled to maintain status quo which also gives us the next step which is to discuss our prioritization for the facilities master plan um we have been presented several times about prioritization um Julie do you want to summarize what type of decision we can or should be trying to make at this time for prioritization sorry to put you on the spot I just feel like there was so much focus on that particular item that we might need to regroup our our thoughts for prioritization and you know maybe we should do like a a like a take a break yeah let's do like a 10 minute uh recess thank you Instagram tomato all right I'm going to call us back into order we were at a recess and we are still on item 4.2 yes thank you so um thank you for taking action on the first item that will be very helpful for continuing with the master planning number two action that we're requesting under 4.2 is for the board to prioritize the order in which the elementary school campuses the remaining elementary school campuses will be improved and I have the list in front of you for prioritizing the order of which they will be addressed now we did talk about at the last board meeting the remaining Bond dollars addressing the needs at Citrus so I think that that could be taken out of the the mix uh for this discussion and the remaining schools are listed there on the slide will we be making a decision about the order priority order tonight yes that is exactly what we're asking for tonight given the allocation exactly given the allocation we made last time of the um you know the remaining Bond dollars from k um how much basically how far is that going to get it from cigarettes I know we've earmarked some of our Citrus some for other projects um yeah what's it just gonna look like in terms of like this this scale here um yeah so we we really have not had the time to investigate the um the costs involved with TK rollout at all elementary campuses so that's a significant cost Safety and Security projects potential restroom Renovations which what I would suggest would happen at the schools that are not prioritized early in this list so I I don't have and the allocation of the remaining Bond dollars that I could share with you I assume you're moving to a discussion about using them for Hooker Oak as well is that what you're considering okay instead of taking pictures out of this conversation completely I just want to know where we're at so we can see if we need to apply any you know future putative Bond dollars to it as well and put make sure to still I don't want to just go halfway with Citrus if it makes more sense to do something bigger later once we got the rest of the money assuming a bond happens so I might ask Laura to help with the conversation but the um the work that we could perform at Citrus would be limited to non-structural work so typically when we have been addressing Elementary School Renovations we've been taking those buildings on the interior down to the studs we've been moving walls we've been repurposing spaces for instance previous multi-purpose room is turned into a Media Center Library space so walls are moved and and uses are changed to other more modern uses that we're using these schools for now we would not be able to perform those types of Renovations at Citrus so it would include heating ventilation electrical possibly upgrades and then finishes with the classroom within the classroom flooring ceilings hopefully Windows I'm not sure if we would trigger a seismic upgrade for that so we are limited by 50 of replacement value as defined by the state before we trigger those and right now that's sitting at about 250 dollars which I could argue is about a third of replacement value not 50 percent I did some preliminary calculations uh 250 dollars a square foot so that will get the things that Julie mentioned roofs but once we start to replace exterior windows or HVAC it starts to trigger energy assessments that you know the dominoes start to fall and that 250 dollars a square foot goes very quickly do we have TK already at Parkview yes we do I mean I'm just you know I'm looking at capacity um or capacity alignment and then um thinking about rolling out TK because not every campus has TK yet right is everything correct not every campus STK thank you okay okay Parkview has one TK and as a medium-sized school they would end up with two TK classrooms that's right thank you yeah Rosedale has one TK right now but they would be slated for three with a renovation right thank you okay I'm making sure I'm remembering all of the all the Matrix the matrices thank you is a large so how I've thought about this a lot so should I just ask her what she thinks of my my proposed top three maybe I don't see why not if you're asking I mean we're not going to ask a more objective question not such a subjective question but actually I want to ask a soaring question that she's going to just be able to expound on if she's going to reiterate that it's not fair to ask Julie how she feels she can say I don't really have a lot of thoughts on that Mr tennis Maybe all right I propose um well I'm thinking that I I I've thought a lot about this and I feel that Chapman is a good one to have on the list because it has been passed up for renovations for many cycles um it is a place where there are a lot of lower income students in the neighborhood and um you know I think we want them to feel special and loved and they deserve to have As Nice a school as the one that we're meeting in right now um in a more affluent part of town and so I think that Chapman is a good one to have on my list um I think that Rosedale is a good one to have on the list because it's very uh very run down and it is extremely popular it is it is busting it's so popular and and his popularity is very long standing um and then finally I think that uh just looking at the numbers only I think that Parkview lends itself to a renovation and primarily because this is a school that a lot of people want to go to it's not in the red category like Hooker Oak and citrusar where they're um you know under uh I'm sorry there's excess capacity in that location they've got more space than they really are using uh Parkview is not in that situation so Parkview is using every little bit of classroom student space that there is and it is one of the schools that is most in need of renovation and so it stands out to me Sierra View is um uh has access capacity in it if I'm not mistaken there are not uh it's not full in other words um and uh little Chico Creek aligns you know so it's not needing it so again I'll come back to Chapman Rosedale and Parkview so Julie Kissel what do you think about that well these are very difficult decisions to make I I could support that recommendation for those very same reasons um Julie on the um looking at the uh the 200 million dollar there's a just under 200 million dollar cap on our next Bond um Chapman is considered a small right yes Rosedale is a large yes and Parkview is a medium yes so if I remember correctly from discussion you said that I'm what I'm trying to do is find the the dollars connected with Chapman Rosedale and Parkview now that we've made the other decision do we get those for just over 200 million those three Chapman Rosedale Parkview it was it was one of the options that you offered but I think those numbers were provided um with the thought that there would be interim housing available I can't hear you Laura so um what what they're saying is that the one large one mid-sized one small that was shown in the slides here would be a total of 201 and a half million it would require some utilization of other funding sources like State reimbursement dollars and developer fees in order to fund this I have to say that given the decision that was just made regarding the Surplus capacity and not not utilizing the Hooker Oak campus as interim housing or repurposing in any way we're still faced with the master plan is a long-range facilities master plan we prioritize the projects we develop what we want to do and as the funding becomes available we we tackle them in that order so um it's my job after you decide the prioritization of these schools to figure out how to fund them and get them completed as quickly as possible so you would have to trust that our department would work our way through this prioritization process sort of a road map where as funds become available that's our next project in line and we work in that order so I don't want you to be hung up on the potential future Bond and and how you could allocate those funds because clearly you you can't at this point so we will need to find more funding more funding sources we do apply for State funding on every single project it usually takes the state quite a long time to process those applications and the money to actually start to arrive back to the district but that's what we do is we juggle those funds and and we make the best use of them possible does that help yes and thank you so much I we all really appreciate your work in your apartment's work and I know it can be frustrating when five Yahoo's disagree with the experts and tell you that we're not going to close a school I'm sorry because I know it throws a wrenches plan I know you guys have worked really hard on this I do want to acknowledge and appreciate all of the work that you guys do in planning this um that said instead of ranking lists of schools again and again I think it might be useful for the board to decide what like values or properties where trying to address the most like do we want to address just the most number of students we can get in the next wave do we want to make sure we address the unduplicated students and the sites with the most unduplicated kids first what is it what are our priorities in terms of who we want to impact and then we can go and maybe see which schools match that I think my priority is uh at this point our schools with the biggest population so we can't get the most students affected per dollar and then after that uh getting the most unduplicated students affected but you know I just want to caution us from having discussion rather than asking questions of clarification since we don't have a motion on the floor I I do I think we could reframe that as um is there guidance that the staff might be able to provide for us for how we internally go through the decision I I have my criteria in mind about what of those characteristics I tend to prioritize internally not that that's a set list of prioritizations for the board and it may be different from other different from other board members so I think that the question you're asking is is would we be would it be beneficial for us to first to decide as a board if we want to standardize our prioritizations and then allow the um the numbers speak for themselves I guess frankly um the objective measures to then formulate the prioritization we have a guiding proposed guiding principles it's slide number one two right sizing which is one of the things we've talked about um keeping our commitments ensuring that our you know the equalization thing TK planning making sure that we've got special ed rooms and Facilities at all of our sites there was a slide that fell in kind of with Mr Lando's um I don't see it Julie the one that showed um our unduplicated count and that's the slide I was just on the the bar graph that lists all of the schools oh that had that had the I believe so I'll run back to it real quick sorry there's so many two go through here oh right well that doesn't have the unduplicated it's right there they're right there 21.

yeah or just rejected to him okay I I make a motion that we prioritize four of the schools for the next um several phases of funding and let let the department come back to us with a how that can happen being Chapman Parkview Rosedale and um Sierra View Sierra View Chapman Parkview Rosedale Sierra View yes those four and in what order well do we do we have to provide an order or is that part of what the department come back and says we can do those for with the funding that we can identify I don't I don't I think what Julie just said is is we want to take the concept of funding kind of out of this part of the discussion we we want to just focus on our our prioritization of the schools that we want to hit one two three four five six seven eight nine ten okay then I'd go Rosedale One Park View two um Chapman 3 CR review four that would be my motion I just wasn't really prepared for us to put a motion on the table yet I didn't call for it I know you didn't call okay so I jumped right in there with the motion so we could discuss gotcha I need to hear it again if we've moved on the motion is to have Park View one no I'm sorry Rosedale won Parkview two Chapman three Sierra View four see our view for a complete rebuild yes even though it has um it's under capacity they Sierra View is one of the four the quads point of order I'm sorry can we have a second for the motion before we begin debate thank you okay no um I have a friendly Amendment actually I have a question about it you can't amend there was no second it dies so you you would you have a second no with there was no second on my motion so now it's back open for somebody else to make a motion you can't amend no you can you can ask for a friendly Amendment on a motion that hasn't been second yes because it's a friendly Amendment is asking for a friendly where you don't have to go through the process of voting but the the person who puts the motion on the table would have to agree that it would be that it was friendly a friendly it's a friendly suggestion we'll just call let's call it that okay so Parkview no sorry Rosedale Chapman Parkview Sierra View yeah yeah and and then no that wasn't her list was yeah Rosedale Parkview Chapman's interview was probably yeah yeah I'm not going to second that um would you like to know why okay um okay so I want to go back to Tom's question first Tom are you you were asking about if there's uh value in prioritizing those categories rather than schools you know I will second your motion and the motion is Rosedale Parkview Chapman Sierra View it's close enough to my okay thoughts that I think I'd be hearing kind of the little Rumblings here I think I'd be dumb not to second that Rosedale I had this thank you Parkview Chapman Cru iser if you want to make a like a substitute motion you can definitely do that okay my substitute would be Rosedale Chapman and then Parkview are we listing a fourth as well see our view ERS just leaving Sierra View off is that is that um not necessarily I I mean not a strong opinion about that but um prioritizing uh Rosedale number one Chapman number two Park View number three I'll second that are we going to discuss now I'll consider that a friendly you would consider that friendly yeah I would okay one motion on the floor I definitely checked up just a little bit so what was the order again I'm sorry we it was Roselle Chapman Parkview series okay it was flipping Parkview and Chapman okay um okay uh do anybody who's made motions do you want to discuss your thought process or why you want to see it that way I kind of gave my rationale earlier but um Chapman is deserving of this um Rosedale because of its success and because of the just horrible conditions over there is also deserving um Park View not as horrible of conditions if I if I may say so as somebody who's pretty familiar with that campus having gone there as a child and then my own kids have gone there but um but it's very popular it's bursting at the seams it's in a location that is that is very very useful and so that puts it over the top it puts it on this list for me yeah um I I'm gonna just put it out there um I came into this and I this is my opinion about how I would if I was the sole decision maker um I would say my order is Chapman Rosedale Park View see a review sometime in there do the touch-ups on Citrus and Hooker Oak LCC then Fairview and CHS to my informed opinion from these discussions over the last five months and my personal preferences for the factors to consider yeah I know that we're looking at elementary schools here but I must say it seems a little strange that we're not considering Fairview also just because it is one of the old elementary campuses so it's in the same state it's because of TK mostly tkn special ed yeah yeah but if and Arts and Music actually so all of those require more facilities on the elementary campuses spec could find a lot of room for other programs to consolidate there if we did an update Fairview though Thinking Out Loud how do you mean sorry just thinking out loud um yeah I would I think it would be a remiss not to mention Fairview is is needing to be you know on the on the list and of course obviously eventually we'll prioritize the whole thing right but I know we're talking elementary schools and the more immediate needs um I my personal philosophy is to um is to focus on the the most um the most underprivileged students first and that's why I moved Chapman up and put Rosedale at a second but I think that if we pass a bond measure we will be able to address all three of those schools by 2028.

and get creative so I like your thinking I support the order okay so we're I guess I would call so would this be a second version am I making a second motion a friendly Amendment by or a substitute motion like by her to to rearrange the order from the from her original and then I seconded Rebecca conkins motion so we're at Chapman Roseville Rosedale Parkview Sears no no we're at Rosedale Chapman oh you were Rosedale I was I was weighing in the I'm looking at both the population and the unduplicated trying to kind of weigh both of them into the equation for my personal value system what was your list uh you were just telling us what year uh it was Chapman Rosedale Parkview for the top three and then Sarah View I don't uh I don't know mister no I had Sharpie last I had Rose I had Chapman Rosedale Parkview my original thought but so Rebecca what's your order hers is Rosedale Chapman Parkview motion which was the last substitute motion which means that it should be taken up first thanks for understanding is correct thanks for keeping track for me because I lost track of my notes yeah yeah no so we have a second motion on the floor which is um which is Miss conkins but also I believe that member Robinson said that she would actually accept as a friendly Amendment right okay so it's the main motion on the floor anyway so it Remains the most I think maybe you need her permission to let that be a friendly amendment I that was her permission you didn't make a but we didn't amend we didn't amend is it wasn't actually Amendment it was just a separate substitute right and then our first motion accepted it as friendly so we didn't need to yeah I think we should just uh recognize that member cronkan's motion is the one we are deboting on okay okay let's hope you got all that Erica so the motion on the floor is Roselle Chapman part of the museum we're on there at some future point or we could we could just expression yeah a large portion of the doing what we can without rebuilding okay um we could just vote on these top four first and then go through another round for the next handful or two or four how does that sound really okay I think it's easier to break it down a couple times start to get quicker at it okay um so let's unless there's any more discussion on these four so um I'm not going to repeat it because we've said it a lot of times um and we'll start uh we'll start the vote um with Miss konkin I Robbins and I uh Dolby I tennis eye Landor [Applause] I know that's she always does that when you start for some reason she goes instead of us keep going in our counterclockwise order throws me off every time huh yeah yeah she likes to do that okay all right so then the next group of schools would be um sorry LCC Citrus Hooker Oak the Citrus is set aside now correct um and so we would actually need to make the motion if we wanted to to give Citrus or hooker up the same treatment as citrus we would have to probably do that at some point in this discussion yes okay and then do we also need to give any kind of prioritization to additional schools like Fairview or CHS or are we getting too far down the line at that point in the 2019 master plan Fairview I believe was prioritized similarly it it is definitely the next priority um in the 2019 master plan behind the elementaries how does so um I think I might need a little bit of help understanding the pros and cons of um prioritizing Fairview above LCC or not so little Chico Creek master plan included editions of kindergarten classrooms prior to the TK coming on board so now the need at little Chico Creek would be kindergarten classrooms and TK you have directed us to handle TK needs with the remaining Bond dollars um so in a way little Chico Creek is going to come into play going to get an improvement with those Bond dollars okay so really um just acknowledging that Citrus is tackled with the remaining Bond dollars little Chico Creek K and TK as well um and then prioritizing where hook or Oak comes into play is what we would be needing from the board which it would seem like it would it would go Rosedale Chapman Parkview Sierra View Citrus and um Citrus and LCC handled with remaining Bond dollars so the hooker Oak would be the next prioritized Elementary School it would be the remaining prioritizing needed I have a question of Julie um would it be a benefit because what I'm wanting to do is put Hooker Oak in the same category of citrus where we do just enough to not trigger does that make sense Julie what I'm saying sure yeah that's the motion I'd like to make is that hooker will be placed in the same category as citrus and that we do upgrades I think you can classify them as upgrades without doing renovations is there a value to what term you use absolutely and I think we understand that that's the desire yeah that's my desire is to do we just need to know when when in the order does that occur yes at my desire is to put it in the category of doing upgrades without renovation and triggering that understood um and that it be after the little Chico Creek kindergarten TK I I too prioritize kindergarten TK so I'd like little Chico Creek to happen before Hooker Oak that's my motion are you saying that you want hook or Oak to be prioritized with the remaining Bond dollars not future Bond if we're prioritizing the future Bond IT projects right now if it what we're doing is we can't do all four elementaries that we just prioritized with the first Bond right correct that's so it would be the following one in the following one oh no because little Chico Creek we're going to try and pull um money out of developer fees and and other dollars to do the two kindergartens and the TK at little Chico Creek my head doesn't put enough money left over for that to do Hooker Oak correct you are correct so I'm so I think I think what you're saying is that Hooker Oak would be prioritized after little Chico Creek or actually Sierra View yes that's correct and it would be your desire that it be a light touch yes non-triggering seismic retrofit yes I think I understand that's my motion I'm sorry I have to clarify but I do because now I'm lost uh yeah me too that would be with the with future Bond money yes okay with the exception of little Chico Creek and what the Julie's Department was saying was they would like to look at pulling our other funding sources to get little Chico Creek done time wise so that we have kindergarten and TK accomplished there don't look on Julie's face right now well I think I think I just need to clarify what what I'm my understanding is and then you can all tell me if if I've got it right or not so the remaining Bond dollars you decided at the last board meeting would be spent on a light touch of citrus Safety and Security projects TK and Safety and Security yes is that correct so just to clarify on that I think I'm starting to finally kind of grasp what we're talking about here it sounds like truly Citrus and LCC would be very first which would be in the next year and a half with the remaining Bond dollars with the 50 million essentially right yes okay and then the and then the sorry I'm just trying to simplify enough to understand the timeline and then um should we obtain that new Bond then we would hit uh Rosedale Chapman Parkview Sierra View or and then hook her up and then hook her Oak yes that's my understanding of what you're requesting okay do you anticipate uh that the projects just mentioned for the remaining Bond dollars from K would be more or less used up in those projects we just we just mentioned yes okay thank you and then Fairview goes on the list after Hooker Oak yes um okay I second your motion after clarifying all of that the order is what Rosedale Chapman I'm sorry I think we're moving on what comes after that right what yeah what what right now what what how did the prioritize remaining schools okay so what confused me was that LCC doesn't end up being further down the list they're actually kind of moved to the top with the current remaining dollars so and that was something we pretty much already voted on last time because we said we wanted to prioritize increasing the capacity for kindergarten ntk and there's a need there for that we're not talking about renovating Little Chica Creek or demolishing and rebuilding or anything like that we're just talking about adding some some additional facilities to house those new grade levels okay thank you so then the motion on the floor from there is that um we would then after hitting Citrus and LCC then Rosedale Chapman Parkview Sierra View then it would go to Hooker Oak and Fairview yeah the motion on the floor is our next priorities afterwards of our realistic will be a broken Fairview I just I had to wrap my head around moving because I have LCC at number five and I had to wrap my head around just that what that means is actually somewhere else it's like two different categories well it is and so there's motion and a second any further discussion why hookah Baroque over Fairview Elementary because we have the needs to make improvements to our elementary schools for the things I rattled off with the TK and special education and we have an increased um uh I would mandate basically for um our Arts programs and I will also reiterate that we are going to be going through this process again before we even get to CR review yeah I'm probably going to vote no on that not that it really matters the hill beans for the reason that you just stated but but spending money on another old school in the middle of town that we don't need I'm going to vote no on that I mean there's only one Fairview but there's multiple grade schools yeah I mean if it was up to me I would move Fairview up higher in the list but because of our increased needs at the elementary school levels with all of these mandates that's not feasible my list would have gone Chapman Fairview Rosedale Parkview no offense to Rosedale it would still be in the top three all right I'd say we should call the question okay whatever well if there's no more discussion we can but but all right um we'll we'll you know you already voted so let's start with you Mr tennis a tennis name Dolby I Robinson I konk and I all right attention from the board at this time on this item thank you thank you thank you Julie thank you thank you everybody excuse me and Maria and Maria h [Applause] oh here they come are you guys the grading philosophers okay sorry that everything's always taking so long nope it's great stuff okay it's all important stuff it's really important thank you for preparing your presentation this evening absolutely well we're excited we have a couple of uh DLC folks with us tonight and I'm glad they stuck around because we have a lot of really important stuff to talk about so just want to make sure as we're going through this presentation that we remind ourselves that the topics for tonight are really the start or the continuance of previous conversations we realize that tonight because this is only an informational item we're not going to be taking any action with the idea though that soon we can have deeper conversations about these three items so as you can see here we appreciate member Robinson and member conken spending some time with us and uh ensuring that the direction we were taking is uh represented their Vision as well as you can see here Tim Carris and Ted Sylvan and I were putting this presentation together I think most importantly later on the presentation you're going to hear from a couple of Staff DLC members Morgan Darr and Gloria godinez so thank you for hanging in there with us they learned a lot tonight so just some background uh we heard it earlier our motto is every student every day and we're talking about all different levels of students so as you're hearing this presentation please keep all of them in mind in all their different backgrounds and ability levels again we're really focusing on every student every day both member Robinson and member conken wanted to be sure that we reminded people of how we were able to start implementing some ideas based on some some additional funding that we received and that's going to become important when we get into the um the different portions of this presentation because some of what we're doing is still funded by those dollars so we need to keep that in mind as we're focusing on learning recovery and then obviously unduplicated account I'd really appreciate the definition of that earlier and lower attendance based on what we've been experiencing both effect and are affected by these three elements that we're going to be talking about tonight so we're going to start with grading philosophy and practices what we wanted to do was not really as background but to frame each discussion and again we have three discussions tonight to frame them first with what documents What policies um provide kind of the bumpers for these conversations if we're in a bowling alley and so we want to just remind the board and the audience that obviously we want to be sure we're focusing on our teacher our teacher contract now when we're talking about grading what comes up all the time is timeliness of grading it's the old formative versus summative conversation right so we wanted to highlight this paragraph because the last line of that paragraph is really important that when we're talking about grading we're doing it so staff can reasonably track student progress that's the premise of our contract all right that's important to keep in mind we do have a board policy directly directly related to this that's supported by Ed code I'm not going to read this whole slide to you but it's important to remember that we have contract we have board policy which informs our philosophy Mr Shepard when I click on this item on my computer it brings up the facility's master plan over and over instead of going to our presentation and that wasn't the case earlier because I I was able to get this presentation on my computer you have a master right behind you The Wizard of Oz guy here he comes there he is laughs I'm right there is a glitch I'm just glad it wasn't my fault Eileen I just got a really really blunt because our experiences have not always been the same it was hiding all right the wizard hmm all right so when we're talking about we have the contract we have the Ed code and we still have to have a philosophy and so we've been working with DLC really closely not just our our English or math but also working with our counselors because they have a role in how those grades affect students right having conversations with them and so we developed this philosophy based on the parameters of the contract parameters of the Ed code and then having our practitioners work with us on some semantics here we wanted to talk a little bit tonight about the power of zero and again I'm not going to read this quote To You by Douglas Reeves but I would like Tyler to jump into the link that's provided there if you wouldn't mind under more information yeah thank you member Robinson so if you can scroll down Tyler I strongly encourage the board and anyone interested in this conversation of power of zero to dive into this document it describes very specific problems with using a numeric value of zero as a grading mechanism specifically if you go up just a little actually go down to four you can see here that oftentimes zeros don't represent learning they don't represent what a student might have learned when they're trying to progress through some curriculum they might represent their attitude about that assignment they might represent their inability to to have a home environment that can support them doing the work but it a zero will not demonstrate learning and so we've been having conversations at our school sites about the power of zero a story I like to tell is when I've asked people in some of the classes I've been in about if a student is is uh is failing a class right what's that percentage what what are we looking for there and they always say well it's it's zero well if they haven't turned anything in and there hasn't been any due dates so kid walks into a class and there hasn't been anything in the Gradebook yet they don't have a zero they have an average we don't know what they are yet we don't know what they've learned but if a zero goes in the gradebook now they're failing right out right out of the chute so we just want to be I want if you can click back Tyler to the presentation if you can jump into that that um article I think would be really beneficial so we also want to talk about current practices when we're looking at each of these elements we have collaboration time for course alike norming we are ensuring that we have waiting grades at grade levels in subject areas and that we're always focusing on the essential standards you might hear things moving forward like standards-based grading and that's what we're we're going to be relating to so it came up in our conversations with our with our board Liaisons about the different methods that our practitioners engage students which then relates to how things are represented in those lessons and then finally how does a student demonstrate their learning and these are commonly referred to right now as Universal Design for Learning and we've been spending quite a bit of professional development dollars on these three elements because we know now that kids Express their learning in different ways and we want to be sure that we provide them with those opportunities we also understand that kids are engaged in different ways and we're continuing to learn more about that all right this is always a Hot Topic just reporting to parents they want more and more information as we know now the different platforms so Elementary and Ted's here to answer any questions about that when we get to the end but obviously they we get those those grades out to parents through a report card and we'll show you some examples in just a second and then we have Aries parent portal which is we think and really integral tool for parents to engage with with the school with their students grades I know this is really small these are just some examples I think you have copies of those perfect I really want to focus on the second page because that's kind of the the what are they learning right what are we highlighting what's important to us so when you look at that K2 Benchmark assessment page you can see here what we're prioritizing and going back to two slides ago when we talk about standards this page is critical so when people ask us what do you teach and when do you do it we can turn to this page and the same thing when you look at the grade five Benchmark you can see the specific standards that we are attempting to uh to teach and for students to learn just an example of what a what it could look like if a parent were jumping into the Aries Parent Portal most folks have seen this before but we want to remind people that we're constantly updating this yeah just clarification that last slide shows the not the real time really right because the real-time Aries you can see every single assignment yeah sorry this is the report card thank you yeah not the um oh I see secondary report cards at the top okay now they're jumping in yeah so this isn't this is this one's not live no no this is the report card yeah I think I misspoke and then we have a cumulative transcript so this is what has kicked out and students are wrapping up I think this is what we were alluding you were alluding to before member dalby that when we start to get into some live data you can see okay how is my student doing right now all right what's going on with my student you can see the different courses here you can see um the uh the due dates as you can read here last year 91.7 percent of our students have an Associated Parent Portal account which I'm pretty proud of a little nervous about the remaining 8.3 you need to work on them too because that's still a lot of kids a lot of times sorry A lot of times um I I feel like that that Gap is as simple as a like a mis-entered email address and it doesn't get caught till the middle of the year contact information Yeah because sometimes they get handwritten or um or it's taken over the phone and the wrong key is hit and yeah sometimes it's it's just a matter of user error but then it eventually when it gets figured out that they haven't been getting communicated with it's like who where do we drop the ball on that yeah well and when that does happen we want to know right if we're if we're not getting information out parents that tells us they're engaged and they're not we need to be sure we're figuring that out what we're going to try to do with each of these three elements tonight is be really transparent about the challenges that we're going to face with each of them so for example we talked a little bit earlier about the the timeliness of Gradebook entries because of Gradebook or if grades are sincerely going to be formative and they're going to help students rather than punish them it needs to be Timely having we have a relatively large district and so having let's say for example all of our seventh grade math teachers having um very similar Department course level expectations intervention practices and acceleration practices and then ensuring that there isn't this hyper focus on GPA that there are other factors in there that can demonstrate learning just for this section questions that I can answer at least tempt you yeah I'm not sure how to phrase the question yet but I'm working on it um what is the value of the participation rates in the elementary school like are we basically saying we don't expect you to learn anything except to be here and do it I think part of me just want to know if they're engaged with it so that's one way to communicate to parents that your child's present they're active they're participating in class discussions I mean they're really being present and kind of taking as much away as possible from the lessons going on like that I wish it was a way to indicate whether these students were actually learning anything in and for me at social studies in the first grade one even at first grade I those studies in science are worth you know learning even in first grade it turns out yeah we've not put letter grades on there so I mean I think at some point we would love to actually have some kind of information like if you look at the fifth grade one on the back it's got some of the standards and how they're doing what they're saying just for Math and English right yeah I think there's discussions of someday would be nice to have those four key areas like that to build a reference just for that parent knowledge level with it as well okay thank you all right so oh whoops I just picked this out when we're done oh okay Tyler's doing it so the next part we're talking about is just homework philosophy and policies and what's the value of homework what does it help in areas What are problems with homework also with it says John shared here's kind of the board policy that drives our homework kind of expectations or how we put it in there support policy kind of the philosophy behind homework signed when necessary to support classroom lessons and really it's a design the the best way is it's a way for a teacher to check and see if a student is understanding something something they can go home drive at home bring it back and see if they get it kind of that fine line of homework of if we're sending things home they've had not experiences with in the classroom it's not okay to expect they're going to do those things at home without support like that but it's a good little check-in to kind of see send home five math problems those kinds of things are they doing well with it if they don't that's a student I need to be checking with kind of during the school they also and see what's going on with them so clearly there's some variance depending on subject grade level with those things an AP class is certainly going to look different than a fourth grade class as far as what's with homework um clearly more at the higher it goes up the more outside work is expected soon becomes more independent Learners the amount of work outside the class increases in the elementary world we kind of do about a 10 minute per grade level expectation so if it's a third grader about 30 minutes of homework is about kind of that spot that we're thinking is reasonable to be sending home fifth grader about 50 minutes max those things what kind of research is that based off of I'm not sure I think it's just kind of been the standard protocol for a very long time and I will say several elementary schools pre-covered we're actually just having some really um kind of engaging conversations about the purpose of homework also and I would say even one or two of them have really moved away from it pretty significantly also I know LCC doesn't really use homework in any way shape or form like some other schools do with it so it's just kind of been what has been in place for for the dawn of time for lack of better word in Chico Unified here's some of the challenges too you know every student's got a different kind of home environment and their ability to take homework home and do it some kids just don't have that kind of space to do those things so how does that weave in for them parent expectations it's a big thing some of our schools is we're having right pre-covered having these conversations about homework some of the schools are very nervous to not have a strong homework policy because of Parental expectations of the kids are bringing homework home other schools are having a different conversation about how complex it is for kids to do it and how can we set things up at school so they can do it here before they go home so they have a nice kind of a quality place to be doing that homework at the school site um I think and one of the other things that happens too is just authentic authenticity of student work being done at home you know is it mom and dad that wrote the two-page essay or is it really the student did it never mind AI kind of weaving into the conversation now as far as what's actually happening with those things as well um and just as mentioned the bottom there are different family and work expectations at home some kids just have overwhelming expectations from a home support kind of structure so to have them doing an hour or two of homework each night is not going to be something that's happening for that student so any questions on homework I will turn it over to Mr Karis and our DLC people Mr Sullivan at some point no well no it'd have to be a request for a gender item but I just like to have some dialogue with little Chico Creek on how they think the no homework philosophy would you like me to have um Kristen Schrock and Stephanie knipp just give you a call at some point and talk about it I can do that easily I think I think they've been very happy with it yes I think they felt some of the battles that were happening they heard from parents some of those battles that were happening at home about it have home is a happier time they can do parents you know they have time with their parents to do things siblings Sports other activities with that so I think they've been pretty good I'll ask him touch base with you about it thank you sorry I mean I think that would be valuable information for all of us okay um it might actually be useful if we could ask them at some point to come in and very briefly I have to invite them and put them on there for a quick check-in about kind of what they're doing with their homework policy okay okay moving on to assessment and we're going to focus tonight on local assessment and that is District required assessments and at times created assessments at the very least District chosen assessments this is a different animal than our state assessments our standardized tests that we give in the spring every year so like the previous two topics we're starting off here with board policy and we can see our board policy around student uh student assessment specifically names District State and or national assessments um as a shall like we shall use those and we use those for a variety of reasons they're extremely important to us to give teachers knowledge on where their kids are to identify strengths and needs of into both individuals small groups and whole classes our DLC is right they're not they're not right in the middle they are the driving force behind our district assessments they make all the decisions they assist with implementation the timing and so I'm we're very very honored to have two DLC members here morgandar from Marsh Junior High she's on our English DLC for secondary and Gloria godinez she is from our from Parkview on Elementary DLC and just a little bit more about these two Morgan is an extremely active member of English DLC and has spearheaded the implementation of a completely new Junior High assessment plan for English this year which is a very very heavy lift and aside from the normal you know Growing Pains of teachers learning new systems and things like that that we expect with all new rollouts she and her colleague Halls uh and Sarah who you met at an earlier board member we have done a absolutely Stellar job with that roll out Gloria godinez um assisted at the elementary DLC and all of the elementary World last summer with working on a map pacing guide with other DLC members to address what we all saw in my February presentation the needs of Chico Unified to better their math our math instruction and results in math so these are two superstars of our DLC and I'm going to turn a lot of this over to them hi I'm very glad I stayed because IXL is actually very exciting um just want to talk a little bit about why assessments are so important they really give you that Foundation of where the needs and the strengths are of the students that you're using those assessments on having a common assessment can help provide information that can be used across the district and it really does support those instructional Focus needs for not only the students the small groups and the whole class but I would say that having this Common Assessment really does support the needs of your grade level and your campus it ensures that the most effective instructional strategies are being used and you're using that information that does allow for course placement the recommendations are based on those student performance levels I also am an education specialist which I work with students with IEPs this program and having a common assessment is instrumental in being able to appropriately Place students in their least restrict environment how do I go to the next slide I know I'm so short how do I go to the next one I got you oh thank you so I'm the DLC representative at Parkview every I just want to go over like what that looks like so every school has a DLC representative and we meet every two weeks on Fridays and we discuss a variety of topics curriculum things that are happening at school and assessments so we do review our assessments annually and an example of some common Assessments in first grade in our next slide we assess for a letter names and sounds phonic skills can students blend and segment and we use that data teachers use that data to drive their instruction for students who need more support or who get it and they can be challenged a little bit more I'm also the title one teacher so us title when teachers use this data to identify students who need a reading intervention so these are all common assessments that are happening at the trimester that really Drive our instruction and at DLC what we do is after we discuss some of these assessments and if we need changes we go back to our site and just give them all the information that we have and get their feedback from our teachers and we meet back again at DLC we hear from all other sites and teachers to see if this is a go or if these changes are not going to happen so we really give teachers a voice and we really are the middleman in these situations um similarly in math we have F iabs these are interim assessments that we use students in grades three four five administer these online and they do help with a just practice taking assessments on the computer like we will in State Testing and DLC members also have the opportunity to have extra assignments so Marisol Lopez the assistant principal at Rosedale and I created a math pulse tutoring program will you go to the next slide sorry thanks uh based off off of these fiebs so we created a tutoring program that after students take these fiebs we are able to pull that data and see what students need additional support and we invite them to an after-school tutoring program so all these assessments really help our school our teachers to plan for and challenge students who need that challenge so we are supporting all students every day so before I move on to the the secondary assessment plans I just wanted to clarify the fiebs that Gloria was referring to those are the focused interim assessment blocks and those are are part of the smarter balance assessment system so when the students are on there taking the test or having a very very similar experience it's just shorter a very similar experience to that that they have when they take the real test and actually this topic actually came up and I don't recall which board member when I was giving my presentation on achievement scores in February and these are the tests that we use to get kids um practice both with the standards um and with the with the testing environment that they'll see in smarter balanced a question that always comes up to my my head is um what's what's the balance of the amount of time time spent testing versus instructional time right in Maine I know that there's probably a best practices there that's that's always a consideration and and one of the reasons why DLC is so important is because they're living every day giving these assessments as teachers and they're able to um to help with that with that question because that's a huge question with assessment yeah I just I know in the past I'm not saying that this is the case now because I've been a few years removed now that there was a lot of Rumble about how much time students are spending taking tests and being assessed rather than um yeah and obviously there's a there's a value to assessment because that's you know the evidence it's a fine line and a perfect example our elementary DLC there's an elementary assessment called a bass it's like a reading 101 reading with some questions we we haggled for the better part of the Year this year whether to keep it in place just for those reasons you know is the time it takes to give this are the are the teachers getting value back enough to help Drive their instruction and literally after about six months of grinding on it we've decided they don't we just said that's not something they're right you know getting information from the drive instructions so we shouldn't get rid of it we get enough other information from those other assessments yeah I think that's a good example and kind of just reiterates the ability for a teacher to know their student well enough to recognize without some of the extraneous assessments that there's intervention that's needed and then there's the flip of that where there are some assessments that are necessary to be able to catch some of those needs for intervention okay right and another piece I'd like to add as a former first grade teacher um instructional time can be much better used with better information so you're giving up time up front to gain that information but you're gaining a lot of of instructional time because your instruction is so focused we call that going slow to go fast right yeah that's how you start the beginning of the year too yeah yeah so um one thing you might have noticed is there's more Assessments in first grade a little bit less in fourth grade um the the difference is because the the skills that need to be measured to ensure solid early primary reading instruction are much more discreet than when kids become readers and they're working on higher level literacy skills so moving up to Junior High and I mentioned the English assessment plan had been turned on its head this year with some great moves we have implemented for English the IXL assessment platform which was actually piloted by Math teachers in Chico you know they've they look look for stuff to help them during covid and found IXL and we got really good feedback and so when the time came to evaluate our our previous assess assessment system which was I ready in in place of that or start reading I'm sorry for for English we weren't getting that bang for our buck like uh missed dalby just said the information wasn't as useful compared to the amount of time spent given the assessment so we so we went back to the drawing board we implemented IXL after a pilot last year um and that's that's gone really well with the usual you know Growing Pains that you see with the new rollout um the ELA performance tasks that you may or may not be able to read because the print small those are um focused interim assessment blocks as well so students are writing um in the smarter balance platform with similar prompts and that they'll see on the state test one of the things that I'm very very thankful to Hollis and Sarah and Morgan for is leading our Junior High teachers through training in late October early November on grading those um which in in my mind is potentially one of the more consequential um PDS that we've had at the junior high level regarding raising student achievement on test scores um for math we also turned the assessment plan on its head this year with the implementation of IXL again um and we also added a assessments from out of the series called mdtp and I'm totally going blank on what that stands for but it's an assessment a series of Assessments created by the UC and CSU systems that are course specific so we can test student Readiness going into the next Math course and as you're well aware math is a is a big focus of ours and we I feel like we're able to do a better job now keeping an eye on student Readiness for the next Math course High School changed also to IXL this year however we're only giving IXL English through ninth grade and we are giving IXL to our math students up through im1 so on an on-grade level ninth grader takes im1 so we're really kind of up through um ninth grade with IXL and then you can see mdtp is administered in courses up through im3 so that would be junior level math and I asked Morgan to give us a walk through an example adoption process a quick question um so in junior high you were talking about the writing assessments are effectively graded the same way that the cast tests are what do you guys do what do we do in um say High School to make sure that all of your writing assessments are graded in a similar Way by different teachers is there a similar kind of key or very close scoring method the rubric was modeled after the smarter balance rubrics the the actual writing assessments are district created and administered in a way that's similar to what the kids see in smarter bounce but not exactly and those really are tied to at the high school level tied to books that the teachers are are reading through the normal course of their of their year I want to interject too and he says District created it's really DLC created we don't want to take credit for that yeah nobody wants me or John writing an 11th grade English test we have plenty of smart teachers that that we have on hand to help with that okay so back to the IXL example this is again just an example but it's very similar at both levels when we adopt a new assessment so I'm going to have Morgan take over thank you I first want to just say how instrumental the DLC process is and has been through adopting IXL the example is with IXL from the English lens but it's also important to note that as a DLC member we take our roles very seriously and even though I am the English representative I make sure I talk to all those departments and the stakeholders on our campus and other sites to represent a true feedback situation to go back and then have that conversation at DLC um an example of how I excel has been adopted and it is taken about a year and that need was identified by DLC we need a common assessment we need this we need to look at different areas of what assessments are available that's where DLC had those conversations went into the sites and had those very at length and in-depth conversations and That Was Then brought back to DLC one of the available assessments was IXL and that had been brought from Matt saying this is a great program you should look at it it was piloted through math but also Marsh English six piloted it last year and that feedback was taken from the students getting their data and their assessment from the assessments IXL is not just an assessment it gives you extensive comprehensive information that we'll go over in the next slide but that information was brought back to DLC and was saying not only can we use this assessment to look in and get these numbers we can then move forward into how can we use this in instructional practice and in that daily every day-to-day instruction and I know that's been a comment that we've heard from teachers forever what do we actually do with this information IXL is a wonderful beast and I say Beast because when you first get all the data you're being fire host and when we pilot when we piloted it we thought this is going to be a lot but it's something that we want to move forward and try and adopt so we can give this really useful tool for instruction and not just as a baseline assessment or a common assessment when it was piloted that information was then brought back to the DLC and I just want to emphasize that assessment really does drive your instruction and this program I excel we saw through piloting that you were able to determine that individual student need as well as your whole class your grade level and your site across all campuses if you're using this common assessment when we decided this was the program we wanted to go to that adoption process and those discussions like I said not only at the site level and at DLC it was taken back with this team and discussed at length with that feedback from all of those stakeholders we decided that it was going to be a great choice and discussed how we should roll this out with training I mentioned the fire hose because initially when you tell a bunch of teachers that you have a brand new assessment right before school starts it's not very it's not taken very well however people were excited to have something new they were just overwhelmed at how is this training going to look and in August we had that at the back to school training was just how to administer the assessment that was all just this is how we're going to administer the assessment and then let them get used to that and then in September we offered for all secondary in English and math half day training we had a lot of people come to that training it was also recorded and sent out to the members who didn't know or the teachers who didn't know if they were really wanting to give up a half day but they were presented with that video DLC also was receiving feedback what are you thinking about these assessments what do you need from IXL I went to every single department and said have you looked at this this data I printed out every single English language arts per class period And I went and I met with science I went and I met with Social Studies by of their each of their class period And I said these are your English language arts overall scores these is your overall reading level and if you want to dive deeper into that I'll break it down into the different subcategories of those areas and the response from those other departments and even PE wanting to know do I need a speech to text or a text-to-speech for these assessments that we're giving based on this IXL English data those are conversations that wouldn't happen if we didn't have DLC so I really want to stress the importance of how this position has given opportunity for those conversations about I Excel so we offered those half day trainings and got a lot of feedback we want more we just want to be able to look into how how do we use this so give us a little bit of time and then when we started getting emails and phone calls text messages hey can you show me this I want to learn more about that we reached out to the IXL rep and we cashed in on some of that training time that you get when you adopt something and so we had two additional trainings during those secondary plc's on Wednesdays that were highly attended and not only did we have English and math coming we had special ed coming I had a co-worker at Marsh that was there for the first part of the year and we I worked really closely with her because IXL gives you really in-depth information on each student that can be used for IEPs it also provides an opportunity for across sites to have that common IEP information and I excel has state standards that are directly connected to our adopted curriculum so English uses studiesync that's our adopted curriculum you can go and click the studysync tab and it shows you all the standards per grade level that relate to this information it's like I said a fire hose of information it's really exciting the the response from the teachers was we want more so which is not the case for when you are given an assessment how do we use this they want they wanted more the student or the co-worker then moved to Chico High she works in special education and she emailed me hey can Chico High come to these IXL trainings they're spreading the knowledge of how effective this information from these assessments and I mean that's coming from assessments so it's really really cool we gave a training Hollis and myself on IXL to the ELD teams that reached out saying if we're using this for redesignation we want to know more we want to know more for instruction a couple people from Oakbridge reached out and we had private trainings with them they wanted to know how to use it for small group instruction so there's been a lot of training opportunities even after we just did one two Wednesdays ago we have more people requesting more so where this has not been an unsuccessful rollout and I do want to say that it has been a really amazing thing to see it fires me up and it really connects those different departments on campus I'm going to go ahead and go to the next slide this kind of gives you a little bit of a better understanding how you can use this assessment data so you can see that we pulled it's an example of an eighth grade English student and you can see that there's an overview reading strategies and then it breaks it down into vocabulary writing strategies and grammar and mechanics you can also see all those lines are individual students and there's five different groupings showed now when you click on one of those groups it shows you the different areas that those specific students might need this is an eighth grade example this is a high need group and it's showing you that you have ranges from fourth third fourth and fifth grade on here and it breaks it down by skill and if you clicked on one of those little arrows it would give you examples and the opportunity to assign it to individual students a group or your whole class so like I said it's extremely con it's huge the it's a very detailed and monster of a wonderful Beast of information and this is directly being used and implemented and everyone wants more it also provides an opportunity in this program for live feedback and assessment results we have these snapshots which Tim showed you in the assessment calendar you can also go into the arena and take a mini assessment and it's recommended to to continually be doing that if you want accurate data in between those snapshots and the students want to know am I improving and they can do it in real time it's called the real-time Diagnostic and a lot of teachers are using it because it gives you that immediate feedback if I'm teaching compare and contrast points of view I know this is a high need I'm going to do a lesson I'm going to assign it I'm going to see how they do on it and it gives you a lot of information based on their student progress how much time they spent on a skill it breaks it down by how many questions they missed and which questions they missed I could talk about it for a very long time yes I'd love to listen I know I'm sorry no no question uh how did we fought this program well we went through the adoption process of DLC so that need was identified I believe right how did we it was identified as a need I don't know who paid for it Jay and Jack and Jacqueline and I are looking at each other going did you do it we think we believe it was Esser funding yeah it was just brought by DLC how do we continue funding this I think it's a five-year contract yes just five years well hopefully more with with the wonderful news we're getting yeah that's that was my thought was you know how do we make sure this doesn't go away if this is as good as it's turning out to be I can so just to go back to so IXL replaced I ready right and we had I ready for over five years before that prior to Esser so we're gonna we're gonna be able to sustain the funding figure out where it's going to come yeah we use Title One funding we also used lcap funding to pay for irated before we just had abundance investor funding so we wanted to use that money first for this program so which we were able for targeted learning group um so we used in that money then we'll go back to our title one and no cap funding after that and the El Cap yeah lcap would would be appropriate yeah oh I I it's very exciting it's not additional use funding it's it's replacing so that's all assuming that it works I know I love I love IXL it works well we don't know yes well it has their own data yes it says you know there's what a five point you know a 13 percentage of points I'm excited for the State Testing results to come back after using this and this is kind of addressed to um John and I'm so sorry I'm tired um do we have a solid plan for three four five years from now looking at the data and saying okay IXL is or is not where we want to keep going and do we have like basically a rubric for whether the adoption is successful absolutely um beginning it'll start here probably in a couple weeks we'll be looking at as Smarter Balance results come back that's really our measure for Success um and DLC has a prominent role in that data analysis very very early we're expecting to go back to normal results timelines and the data analysis begins in June are we going to make any knee-jerk reactions in June based on that no we need to give some a new program time before we evaluate I think you're right on the on the money we're looking at it like three years yeah um I used to use IXL but I've got the data pulled up here where they say there's a yeah 13 swing after three years and and I take like like you're getting at I take every every vendor's claims with a big grain of salt um but what we've seen like Morgan's describing in the classroom it allows for focused instruction which is what we want it allows for remediation um abilities um like this actually the previous slide um so it we believe we continue to believe um just like when we adopted it that it will meet our needs but it certainly it will be up for evaluation yeah and I'm again I'm not knocking IXL like today I worked extensively and it's a useful piece of software well really to make sure though is that um we're avoiding craft right we're not adding more and more programs every year is the new cool thing comes out and then not making sure to remove you know previous stuff so we're not overwhelming right and star reading was removed um this year from the English required assessments um and this is what replaced it when you do that analysis in a few years um there's going to be a several variables right to have to consider um how do you how do you reasonably assess how the assessment is working for the district based on Smarter Balance tests with the ver with the variable of it depends on what the teacher does with the information right it isn't the success of the program actually going to be what do you do with it correct like there's no magic assessment programs out there zero Med you can't buy a computer program and expect it to work miracles for you it's a hundred percent about what how teachers use it in class and one of the things that I've been very happy with that I'm ecstatic both that with our DLC members are taking the the lead on The Guiding the trainings but the the trainings from IXL themselves have been very well received and very well done Morgan how long have you been a teacher this is my 10th year okay so I guess my question in a in an anecdotal way is how has this improved or streamlined your process of of assessing students and planning for your next set of lessons I mean does it it doesn't add or take away planning and Grading time or does it pretty much just stays the same but is more effective in your opinion I love that question because the way that I've been using it and kind of supporting some of the other teachers that I've been working with is this specific what you see right here and it's how do you use this information to differentiate your instruction and use those udl best practices as an education specialist working with co-teaching what we were doing was doing kind of those small group instruction um that's more of the elementary model that's really successful so we were doing in my sixth grade co-taught English we we directly used this us and we do we're doing six week rotations and reassessing seeing they would go into the live Arena seeing if they did make progress was this something that we were seeing progress from having these small groups and using these skill specific instruction or the data based on what are the specific needs so let's go over the main idea of a passage am I using IXL extensively to teach that no but am I teaching that concept yes and I think that kind of goes to what you were saying IXL is not the only thing we're using for instruction but it's definitely what we're using to then base our instruction how do you maneuver and pivot with this information yeah so um just to clarify my Baseline question do you feel like with this program you are planning and Grading more or less or about the same I would say planning less because this does a lot of your planning for you and if you're using it in the way that I would hope we all kind of reassess and take the information when you test or give kids quizzes you then change what you're doing based on that and that gives you this information and like I said if you have kind of that Foundation of what you're teaching in the class you just go to maybe a different level or push them in a different way yeah I I just know I've seen my English teaching friends who spend so many hours with greeting and lesson planning and planning their own lessons that I you know I always want to kind of protect that time definitely I think that from the feedback that I've gotten from the different sites and the people that I work with is they really like using IXL and they want to know more I also know that math is really into how to use the information in their instructional planning also Caitlin I just want to say that um we're visiting different sites and going to their staff meetings and Morgan will test that I was just there yesterday one of the things when I said how can the district support you moving forward next year one of the teachers I believe with in English teacher he um first time that's ever happened to me come in and said are you going to continue to support IXL on our campuses and I said yes I believe so I believe it's been a very popular announcement Morgan stepped up and said yes we have a five-year contract and that's the first thing they said to me was thank you for continuing that effort I don't know what's next Gloria so the um Elementary example that we have for you is the fiabs that Gloria mentioned earlier um this is an example of a report that that teachers get following the administration of the fiabs so they're easily able to identify students in in need of extra help on these very very focused assessments so um you know some of the challenges um with assessment have been discussed already one being finding a balance between over and under assessing that that time factor and how much uh how much bang are we getting for that upfront investment in um in time that it does take to give assessments other identified challenges is teacher training time particularly on data analysis IXL like Morgan mentioned there's formal trainings where teachers were released from their classroom it's hard for a teacher to leave their classroom I mean it's not a it's not a day off you know they have to make sub plans and they come back after sub and have to reorient we were fortunate enough to be in tap teachers volunteer their collaboration time on Wednesdays to take part in additional trainings but still time and and time for the analysis and time for training is always a challenge with assessment okay any questions all right well thank you very much for your time thank you both for being here appreciate it sorry um so our next item is uh number five uh this is our discussion action calendar Business Services McManus Elementary School new construction and modernization project bid and contract approval hi Julie hi can you please state your name for the proud sorry go ahead back in my wheelhouse tired now um tonight um we bring forward the bid results for the McManus Elementary School construction and modernization project there were four bidders I've listed them on the lead sheet modern Slater United building contractors and BCM Construction I want to note that the top two bidders were scarily close within two thousand dollars of each other on such a large scope of work is I've never seen anything like it before but we're very happy um that their numbers were were lower than we had expected so tonight we are asking for a total project approval of the 41 million dollars seventy thousand five hundred and the um direction from the board to execute Construction contract with the lower the lowest responsive bitter Modern Building Company do we how we work with both of those companies I know we have worked with modern I just um we have we have worked with all four of these firms on several occasions and we would have been happy for any of them to be the lowest bidder okay let me know I recall there being and probably not to their fault probably because of some of the earthquake upgrades and such um that there's been times when we've had to revise the the contract for a higher amount because things have kind of snowballed and so I just I just yeah I'm just curious about I mean I'm not curious enough to go into a lot of detail about it but with the two thousand dollar difference you know with either of those is there has there been a history of a higher risk of having to actually go back and increase that amount from their bid amount no I would say they're there are always things that occur once you're under construction that were unforeseen that require an increase in contact contract amount and that is the case with any one of these contractors okay thank you or it could be a district requested change as well that is more costly that changes that contract amount but those come back to the board for approval are you ready for a motion uh I move approval of um the lowest responsive bidder which is Modern Building Company and the there were two parts to your request really the total project uh approval the total project approval of 41 million seventy thousand five hundred awesome I'm in a second though Dolby second in case you didn't know my voice sorry I'm getting loopy um okay any discussion from the board or are we ready to vote I'll start I'll be I Rob Robinson I konk and I when do I thank you that's unanimous thank you what's next Charter Schools measure K Project's requests item 5.2 Julie thank you so the charter facility committee has met recently and brought forward their recommendations for two things that we're asking for your review and approval on this evening the first is a request for an allocation of uh twenty thousand dollars for core Butte to assist with their planning and cost estimating for their sport field and then the second portion is sort of a true up for previously approved projects at core Butte um where the projects were approved and the final accounting summary is is coming through so those are trueing up [Music] um they're available funds within their measure K allocation did you have any concerns or questions about any of these items no okay I'm of approval second okay uh we have approval a motion from Mr tennis and a second from Mr Lando our last vote was unanimous so all those in favor please signify by saying aye aye hearing no opposed it's also unanimous thank you all right next item six board member request to agendize an item Madam superintendent I had incred intended to ask you this earlier today um when we spoke but um I recently learned that there's some kind of five dollar limit to a gift that you can give a teacher does this sounding familiar like for PTO per are you referring to the district giving the teacher or or a parent giving the teacher this is like I think somebody giving something to through the PTO for for for teacher gifts some sort of five dollar limit are there any five dollar limits on gifts to teachers that you're aware of from any source no usually any kind of restrictions like that like on donations or things like that have to do with Ed code I've I've gotten plenty of 10 to 15 gift cards from Starbucks okay thank you and and that could be an individual site or it could be a restriction that PTO gives so that they could be Equitable but if you have more information I'm happy to research thank you thank you in that case I have no further items to discuss with regard to putting on a future agenda okay thank you are there others from other board members yes okay um I would like to agendaize discussion regarding the possibility of a district-wide facilities committee to get more input from our families regarding facilities master plan I have a question so this would be different from our current facilities we have a facilities master plan steering committee this would be kind of like what we mentioned earlier like an advisory committee something that's more robust something that's possibly you know is subject to Brown act I mean how are we I mean I have ideas about what I wanted to look like but for now my discussions about what it looks like what it could look like when they talk about it if we decide to okay do you want that to be a discussion action item yes okay okay thank you thank you I'll second with that um I guess we can't really discuss sorry is the system we have now broken what is the system we have now how do we get community feedback right now about our master plan so Julie shared that a little bit earlier there were several steps there were Community meetings some were well attended others were not um and then there also was a survey that went out we got information via survey and then in this particular case it was a very compressed timeline knowing that we wanted to go out for a bond in having to backtrack the timeline from that and so you know I think that that played into some of the communication issues on this particular one I will say with the schools that were directly impacted when we knew early on we made sure that we had site representation start attending the facility meetings um but I will also tell you nobody's going to stand up and say yeah take my school I mean those are difficult discussions and that's evidence when we went through and had discussions about closing schools when it was nored when it was Forest Ranch we went through the whole school closure process and you know we had packed meetings for four meetings in a in a row on those so it makes awareness for sure so that nobody's you know surprised they know it's coming but it doesn't decrease the sensitivity nor would you expect it to so oh God so my understanding is the goal of this item would be to get more information in exploring that that option for um addressing the clear uh challenges that are coming down the line maybe include a discussion of the current steering committee and whether it's meeting our needs and how to prevent the kind of surprised that we that we inadvertently hold on to the schools here today so not necessarily another committee but just kind of fine-tuning the committee we already have maybe I'm open to options I just want to talk about it okay um do are we ready for a vote okay Mr Lindo when do I attendance name Dolby I Robinson no konk and I right it passes three two thank you um I would like to agendize um I don't have a timeline on this so if a board member would like to amend this with a timeline I'd be happy for that um to explore the option of a no homework policy um and what that would look like at each elementary middle and high school so a discussion with potential action on implementing no homework policies with the understanding that is just for the purpose of having a conversation uh I will second that I'll be voting no because I don't think that even deserves a conversation I mean uh edu public education two teachers decorated in so many ways um is to explore it um and discuss data and evidence and how how homework um is is or is not effective and what we can do with policy based on that so we have a motion in a second um I will start Dolby I Robinson I can't now tennis nay it passes three two um I don't have a timeline on that so um we might have to discuss that and just see where it would fit best timeline wise um my second agenda is item is to um put on our May meeting to vote to consider not having a school board meeting in July and giving our staff July off you're taking a pay cut also that's a good question we don't have it yes the board yes could not get the site because that is an egg coat you would not get the money so we would be saving the district money Madam superintendent do you have an opinion about this idea we did do this last year um and it was fine I mean it was nice for people to be able to say take some time off in July and you can plan a vacation and not have to worry around and most importantly Erica for putting all of the agendas together yeah my I have reasons but that's why I want to put on the agenda to to discuss it we could always end up voting no a second thank you um you have not started yet Senate have you have you started yet tonight oh I would be happy to start except I haven't decided how I'm going to vote yet okay we'll go backwards Dolby I miss your tennis Robinson I all right it's unanimous um with that I move to adjourn yay seconded we're done thank you ah it's a closed session

the fact that the board takes so much dedication to ensure that each student is cared and understood for and it means a lot to know that you do so much to ensure that the well-being of every student no matter like who they are what they're going through um and where they're at in the current moment and I think it's something that's truly unique to the auhsd and to all of you executive cabinet and estimate board you're all simply incredible and I look up to you every day those are amazing role models and I know every student is honored to have you as their board thing thank you we had the board come up for a picture thank you [Applause] well I was going to okay you can stay there all right next 6.2 the 2223 auhsd student ambassadors the Board of Trustees will honor the district's student ambassadors for their service during the 22-23 year the ambassadors serve as official spokespersons for all the district students at special ceremonies events and functions the student leaders are also deeply embedded in the district's governance structure and actively provide the student voice wherever possible the following students will be recognized for their important contribution to the district and I'd like to have Mr Ron Hoshi Hilda Vasquez and I'm not sure I saw Jennifer Brown in the audience oh she is here okay can you three please come forward as you are the sort of the leaders of this group so come on forward [Applause] okay there you go are you going to say something about the Ambassador well on behalf of the students representing all of our schools including Cambridge and hope school I just really want to thank the board and the Ed Division and superintendent matsuda for really allowing the students like omkar said to have a voice the student voice is valued here and we just want to say thank you so much the kids have have taken on a lot more responsibilities with getting students with lcap um omkar and vinod led a district-wide mindfulness committee that did two mindfulness workshops this year and we were just so proud of their work and how they are continuing to get more students in involved and we are happy to be working with the ASB directors next year and with Mr shalinsky closer to get more student us working together as as leaders and to involve more students so thank you on behalf of Mrs Vasquez and Mrs Brown and the student ambassador team we'd like to thank you for trusting us because the answers really are in the room with these kids so thank you [Applause] yes yeah I'll try to keep this brief but again thank you so much for this opportunity through this entire experience I've learned so much about the district about so many people and how working together we can achieve so many things and working together and having common goals you can always do do things to better our community to better our schools and I really appreciate everything that you all do and everyone in the audience because I know that everyone just walking over here everyone said hi to me and I was like oh my gosh hi hi just thinking about how everyone here has that common vision of education is important and how can we help improve it and you know better serve our community and all the kids there so thank you everyone [Applause] of course yeah sorry I got excited um so yeah my name is Evelyn Alonso I am the student ambassador at Anaheim High School [Applause] and I will be attending Yale University next year Evelyn Evelyn okay Evelyn Evelyn all right hi everyone my name is Malia Balcom feekray and I've proudly represented Cambridge Virtual Academy as a student ambassador this year it has truly been an experience where I've learned a lot from helping out in the mindfulness in Black lives matter task forces to presenting about our career and preparedness systems framework to elementary schools I was able to get a glimpse of just how much time and effort is put into this District to for the better of our students throughout this program I've gained so much from soft and hard skills quite a few Blazers my individuality and so much more I'm grateful to have had this opportunity which has shapen me into the confident person standing before you thank you CVA mom Mr Hoshi Mrs Vasquez Miss Brown the Board of Trustees especially Miss Randall Trejo you're awesome and everyone who has made this experience possible I'll be bringing the lessons I've learned with me to UC Santa Cruz where I intend to pursue a degree in Psychology thank you thank you a little bit tall for this one so hello my name is vinod vivaraj and I was the Ambassador for Cypress High School this year and I think one of the main things I really want to get across to I guess everyone in this room was how powerful this was for me and I think the reason I say it was because I wasn't super involved in school at all I know Mr Hoshi knows a lot about this but before this I played basketball and I loved it a lot but that was it I wasn't really involved in school so for me becoming an ambassador the biggest thing that it really gave me was the opportunity to connect and I realized that our district our schools and everything around it there's so much opportunities and so many things to offer something like lcap I never would have known that was even a thing if it wasn't for this position and I think I'm just really grateful because since I was the Ambassador I was able to share that with other people other people dressed like me who really had no clue I can share that our new Ambassador he was in a similar position as me he wasn't super involved he played sports but he didn't get super involved in school outside of that but because of him being the new Ambassador he will have that opportunity too and he in turn can kind of inspire other people to take advantage of some of the things that our District offers so I really want to share it and just really am thankful that I had this opportunity because I think I can Inspire some other people to really get involved and really learn more about District so thank you oh I forgot uh my bag uh yeah so I'll be going to UC San Diego for college and I'm going to be majoring in computer science [Applause] hello my name is Adrian Barrios I'm a hope schools ambassador I would like to thank the father trash things for the chance to being the best of it I got I got to me new people to be more independent and have some fun and no way I like when Queenie I got to greet people I would like two things Mr Hoshi and the ambassadors and and Brianna thanks to the experience experience I I have learned a lot learn a lot I will be going the transition to be a good human [Applause] fantastic ambassador adorable thank you they all want to shake your hands oh yeah I just had to meet you okay hello everyone my name is Roland Hernandez and I proudly representatilla ice causes student ambassador first of all I'd like to give a strong thank you to my advisors Mr Hoshi Ms Brown and um Miss vastus for truly showing me what being a leader is um I would say that from the beginning of my junior year to my senior year I've made the most character development and overall development that I have in my entire life I would truly devote um like this development to the program and being an ambassador just because it's truly shown me what being a leader is um I never really truly had a definition of a leader until the end of my Ambassador term what I now think a leader is is being someone to to be um being someone that people could look up to being someone to guide people to a successful path and truly being someone that could Inspire others to pursue greater things that that they already are doing so if it wasn't for the ambassador program I truly don't know where I'd be but yeah I'm very grateful for this opportunity and throughout this entire year to not only be part of the Ambassador team but to also meet the councils of all the ambassadors so yeah um I I will be doing a nursing school at UCI so I'm very happy but yeah thank you everyone foreign everyone so I was told to be a bit brief or else I would be literally standing here forever but in in short words um my name is Monty for sure and I served I proudly served as a student ambassador at Magno High School for the 2022-2023 school year and let me tell you this right now being a student ambassador and being the representative to the student voice at my school I have learned a lot of things and one of those being a student lead obviously a student leader but also learned the the skill of being being in leadership being in servant leadership as in obviously serving my students and making sure that their voices are heard their concerns are are heard and also their assets are being looked at um next year I will be attending UC Riverside studying environmental science and yeah I'm excited to see where the new ambassadors what the new ambassadors do next year and I I want to thank you all for being a part of our journey thank you [Applause] thank you good evening everyone my name is Monica McHale and I'm proudly I'm really honored to be the student ambassador of Kennedy High School I want to thank the board and also Mr Dario and all my advisory for helping me to get through this year I'm being a leader in my school I was it was a dream for me to be a student ambassador I never imagined it I went in I always wanted to be there for students I came here I found a lot of people supporting me and I wanted to be that support for other students too I wanted to raise their voice I wanted to make them feel that we're always here for them and just being here just learning all about the district and our the Deep work that our board put in and our teachers and all staff here it gives you a lot of going in I know that they put a lot of work for our students and just meeting a lot of community leaders and all of the people that I was able to meet through this year and have a conversation with it really shaped who I am today and like it just made me who I am it was a big part of me and I'm really sad that I'll be leaving this part of this position but I'm sure that it's going to be for like forever it's gonna be there and it's gonna be always like keep going with all the work that Mr Ho sham is brown and Ms Vasquez born to this uh I'm really honored to be here and I really want to thank everyone and I will be going to UC Irvine and I'm majoring in biology next year [Applause] hello everyone my name is Michael Flores and I'm the Gilbert High School or alternative education student ambassador and when I first started being an ambassador the one thing I had in mind was to break the stigma of Gilbert because as a Gilbert student you really learned that what people say about it is not true at all and throughout the year we've earned many Towers such as model democracy oh my continuation school democracy school and now the most recent one being Civic learning what of Excellence at Gilbert this last month and I would like to say that I'm very proud to be representing Gilbert continuation school regular school it's still School in my opinion and honestly thanks to this program I was able to help others see that Gilbert isn't bad and I would like to also thank you all for the opportunity to be here including you Mr Hoshi Miss Brown and Miss Vasquez and I am actually not going to college I'm planning to go straight into U.S army after I finish High School [Applause] foreign my name is R Cardenas Laura student ambassador as a student ambassador when I got the title of student ambassador at first I was skeptical I thought I was in prepared I thought I was I wasn't a good leader but as I grew as the year went on I grew so so much I saw so many people um learn and so many people share their experiences with me I saw them participate I saw I was saying the only one with struggles and I got to have circles restored circles at my school and I'm really proud of it and I know that many other students feel they can connect with others and feel the opportunity they they have the opportunity to feel included in every conversation so and I'm going to Cal State Long Beach to pursue aerospace engineering all right uh hello everyone my name is Joseph Reyes Olivas and I am oh my apologies and I am Oxford Academy student ambassador um and years prior I've been active on campus but I don't think I've had a servant leadership experience as transformative as as this one with this program uh with this program I was able to develop my public speaking uh sharing the importance of the Pledge with families around Anaheim I've become a better collaborator leading Oxford Academy's RCP in coordinating Summits and I exercise my creativity working with our public information officer to publicize District events and highlight my community I truly was able to develop in all five of the Seas and I became a lot more civic-minded in the process and I think that has played a major role in influencing me choosing to study political science at UC Irvine at this upcoming school year um so thank you to the board Trustees for supporting such an excellent program and thank you Mr Hoshi Ms Brown and Miss Vasquez for being such excellent advisors thank you [Applause] all right good evening everyone my name is Jenna saday and I'm the proud student ambassador of Savannah High School [Applause] first and foremost thank you for having me here and I want to thank the board for giving us the ambassador program in my opinion being an ambassador has been the most significant aspect of my high school experience and it is not an easy leadership position it takes a lot of courage to bring up topics that maybe most students don't or generally talk about topics that most people don't like to bring up and of course advocate for changes that our student body wants to see but being the leader that I am I definitely want to thank Savannah high school for that I was raised into the leader that I am because of my teachers because of my counselors administrators and because of my peers and coming to school every day at Savannah High School I I every day I felt like I came in with a sense of purpose and my teachers showed me the value of education and above all ahsd showed me the value of Civic engagement and advocacy as a student ambassador I've had the privilege of having so many meaningful conversations with board members with administrators with other people in our district and it's allowed me to advocate for my peers you know the people that I love and it's my way of showing appreciation for Savannah high school and it has led to my success today and it has led me to the opportunities that I've taken advantage of that has allowed me to get into UCLA where I will be studying civil engineering [Applause] hello my name is Brianna Dawson and I proudly represented Western High School as their student ambassador this year I would like to thank you guys first the board for empowering students like me to use their voice to facilitate change within their school communities I'd also like to thank the Ambassador advisors Mr Hoshi Miss Brown Miss Vasquez for constantly pushing me outside of my comfort zone in order to help shape me into a leader I've developed a multitude of skills from this program but most notably I think I've improved upon my public speaking skills through presenting pledge presentations at Anaheim elementary school and sharing the amazing opportunities that our district has to offer I will be taking all the skills and lessons I've learned from this program to UCLA in the fall as a biology major foreign [Applause] cheese what camera to look at them no with that all right great thank you [Applause] um okay we're missing a couple okay okay I'm card did not share where he will be going next year so I want him to tell the audience where but his plans are so I'll be taking what I learned on the dice to Stanford University to learn political science what a great group of kids you are all to be congratulated for doing a good job it's been a good year and I am so proud to hear each one of you say that you have grown through this program this makes it even more worthwhile thank you all for your service yeah I can just add really quickly I've been a board member for five months and it's been incredible to get to know uh the student ambassadors and all my car specifically who sits to the left of me on the dice and I'm definitely gonna miss you all but you'll always be my first group of student ambassadors so thank you so much for everything that you do okay the feeling I get from each and every one of you is love and kindness and that kind of support will carry you through a joyous life and you bring nothing but good spirits to this school district and I just can't tell you how grateful we are for all of you and your parents because you've had wonderful support in your families and your loves thank you thank you I Echo all the sentiments that my colleagues said I just really am enamored with all of you there are a lot of Firsts in this group a lot of firsts and that you has start you started and I feel kind of sorry for your um for the next group because they really have some big shoes to fill we thank you so much gotten to know a lot of you this year because you really put in the work and as my colleague said that you've all said that you've grown are you kind of glad that you had some task Masters behind you uh Mr Hoshi he expected a lot from you and I know I know it was because he knew that you had it in you to grow he knew what you had maybe you didn't know that you had inside of you so I want to especially thank our advisors Mr Hoshi Miss Vasquez Miss Brown for all the work that they put in as well Bravo to YouTube I can say I can say ditto to what my colleagues here said but I'll first start with thanking the the leaders of the ambassadors Mr Hoshi Miss Vasquez Miss Brown uh we've seen over the years the the growth of the ambassadors and this year you you embarrassed to have done such a wonderful job uh just hearing you stand here at the podium and and talk to us and the audience about what has happened through your Ambassador term and where you're going you have you projected yourself so well and it nominations are submitted by past and present students of auhsd as well as families staff members and community members the selection committee then had the very difficult challenge of reviewing at the nominations and selecting three District councilors of the year who exemplified the best of the best so first Candace Dion from South Junior High come on down you get to go into the middle congratulations so a little bit about Candace 23 years in auhsd the special contributions Canada shows genuine care and support for her students she is an active listener and creates a safe place safe space for students to express themselves and as and their needs she is approachable and available for her students Candace makes it a priority to check in on students and their flat families past students have reported that they remember her presence and encouragement which motivated them to focus on their own success congratulations Candace foreign [Applause] next is Penny has this Savannah High School okay see I told you I said it right actually they wanted me to say penny Iota so but the Penny's fine okay 17 years in auhsd special contributions penny is creative and persistent with the support of the with that she provides to students one example is a rebel relaxation room which is a space where students can participate in a variety of calming and re-centering activities she is aware of the unique needs of individual students and provide supports that scaffold them towards a positive goal while acknowledging their challenges they need leads by example and cultivates resiliency and persistence in students so they can continue their personal growth congratulations [Applause] and last but not least is Elizabeth grothy yes Western High School incubator lab 25 years their diploma she has also dropped off and picked up student work when students are not able to attend school regularly Elizabeth has also been named one of the five Orange County Department of Education school counselors of the Year congratulations [Applause] thank you all right 7.1 student Representatives report it's Europe your turn go for it we'll do um so before I begin the report I had a sort of small thing to talk about um I remember before during like my first or second um board meeting I talked about this which was the preferred vote for the student representative and I was sorry I'm not close enough and I was speaking about it with Mr masouda I think Mrs Piercy and a couple of the student oh God sorry a couple of the the board members and it was essentially that I know that the student representative isn't like elected in a conventional matter and it's more like assignment and I was hoping that for the upcoming student representative it could if it could be considered to have a preferred vote for the student representative which was basically just before any motion just to give a small little uh like share Soul Insight on how it would affect students which I think I know you guys you all gave us the opportunity to do and like questions and such like that but um and it was like a small little place that they created in the csba for the student representative to share insight for student impact and I know um once again it's not election based but I'm hoping it's something can be considered by the board for the next representative which is Daniella who I think is amazing and was very like capable to uh share student voice in a reaction that's been taken by the board but once again thank you so much for um allowing me to share student insight and giving uh like propelling student voice forward I really appreciate you all so on to the student report um so up first we have Anaheim So Adam High School spring dance concert or 2023 was titled diverse cultural voices so from April 13th to 15th Anaheim students performed at the Kennedy Performing Arts Center through interpretive and cultural dances uh CVA cva's ASV organized an event where students had the opportunity to meet up at the CIA building and create appreciation cards for their favorite teachers and staff members Cyprus held the every 15 minutes program which directly addressed the issue of drunk driving so they have this whole setup where they uh simulated how it would feel like if we lost one of our own students who drunk driving and it was very elaborate and it really gave us like a pain in our hearts to think about if one of our fellow peers was lost the next day Gilbert High School hosted the breathe breathe healthy live mindfully tube event and it was hosted on November on April 5th so students from across the district who participate in the Anaheim Eve program helped Host this amazing event and then special guests the music knows performing Katella high school held Katella talks which is an event inspired by TED talks and allows students to express and discuss topics they're passionate about so things they're going for career and issues around the world that they're passionate about and creating change Kennedy's Color Guard had their championships and their varsity are in sixth place in Scholastic a division at the Long Beach pyramid and their JV earned sticks and Scholastic AAA division at Marina High School so we had to go fighting Irish loera held a battle of the Saxons which was a time where during the week-long each of the classes had little battles and basically the seniors won which is obvious because the senior class is amazing um I'm a little bit biased but so that happened at the lower high school Magnolia held the senior luau which where graduating senior is going to celebrate the culmination of their academic Journey they had a beautiful traditional dance while they enjoyed a meal there was a hula dancer and it was complete with vibrant traditional wear and live music Oxford Academy's FBLA chapter recently took to Sacramento to compete in the FBLA State leadership conference there they had over 70 members compete in different business categories and they placed second in the state for um how great they were so they're looking forward to bring even more medals home especially at Nationals Savannah held there since the first time since the pandemic The Clash of the classes so very similar to lower high school where they had all classes participate in a dance competition to win the class trophy so once again the senior class one because uh go class of 2023 and they got to hold on to the trophy until the next Clash of the classes which will be next year and finally Western so four Western students joined together to begin painting a colorful mural and a College and Career Center so it's vibrant it spells out Western and each letter contains a different symbol to showcase the program available to students so once again an Ode to the auhsd and finally thank you so much each of the ambassadors or most of them are a little thank you in their report as well so once again thank you so much for everything thank you [Applause] [Music] okay next we have student speakers uh n a Anaheim Union High School District student in the audience who wishes to speak and I have uh one to I believe it's three two I have two speak forms Forum students so the first one will be Lexi Roca well actually you want to come to the microphone uh good evening um my name is Lexi Rocha um I'm the president of Gilbert High School's GSA also known as rainbow Gladiators I would like to share an important message and a very special invitation with you tonight but first let me introduce my classmates and support staff um my secretary Liz Vargas our classmate Rochelle Ibarra which is my cousin um our classmate and Gilbert High School student ambassador Michael Flores is here somewhere and our GSA advisor Miss freeze and our community partner from the OC lgbtq Center Stephanie kimbacho Van Dyke um throughout this school year GSA has been very active and civically engaged a student organization at Gilbert High School our club members have participated in many Civic action events on our campus like Auntie debacle and mindfulness events democracy school and Civic learning projects and we have presented at staff professional development meetings um our club took early action during back to school night last fall to organize a community service project to help homeless Foster youth by supporting a local non-profit called Foster friends in Anaheim there we set up volunteer Service Learning opportunities to help in the store by helping our local community and participating in campus-wide activities GSA has been able to create a more welcoming and affirming environment for all students particularly lgbtq students as you know students who feel welcome and appreciated tend to do better in school we're proud to announce that all of our GSA seniors are graduating this year on May 23rd at the first graduation ceremony for all the District class of 2023.

the first week of May with the spirit week and activities to bring awareness to mental health scl and mental health needs for Granite Hills High School students have increased 314 percent compared to before the pandemic and 26 increase since last year so the needs to bring awareness to mental health and available resources is needed now more than ever we are grateful for our counselors and therapists on our campus and all of our teachers and staff that support us on a daily basis and value our Mental Health next week we will have a Community Mental Health Partners on campus for our of the every 15 minutes program was success successful moving and impactful we're extremely thankful for all our Community Partners that made it happen and a big thank you to Mrs Nelson for being a part of our event and being there to support our national Signing Day event was today where seniors can go to take pictures and celebrate as they go off to onto bigger and better things senior awards are going to be hosted next Wednesday on May 10th and I personally got two invitations to go so I'm excited to see what type of award I receive although whatever it is I'm extremely grateful and excited as for athletics all of our sports teams are doing well and even on two playoffs for softball there was a lot more I wanted to share with you this meeting but I will try to save it for the next and I will say that I hope this month brings us lots of great things and more memories to hold on to and cherish for the rest of our lives thank you for your time today and always remember maroon and gray lead the way have a great night time good evening to the members of the board and attendees my name is Cheyenne Valentine and I'm the ASB line president at Apple Valley High School before we get started I want to recognize the administration and the other people in the district that are retiring and we appreciate your dedication to our community this is the last time I'll be presenting all of the things that abhs has accomplished this year in a few weeks I'll be presenting the new line president Sophia Brandt so on that note let's get started last month some of our programs like camp and ASB concluded their applications for next school year parts of these applications teach real life skills to students that can be applied to their lives outside of school for example most of these pro programs require students to write an essay and attend an interview with other students in administration administrators on campus also something new to not just Apple Valley High School students but all the high schools across the districts was a state Civic seal of Engagement this allowed students to prove their knowledge of constitutional documents and how our government functions as well as tie that into their everyday lives students had to get a proficient score on a test that proved their academic knowledge of the United States government and if they pass they had the opportunity to present how they apply these principles to not just their personal lives but also the local state and National Community if they met all of these requirements they got this deal this is the first year that this was offered for this district and I got it as well and I'm so grateful for this opportunity thank you and going into that I was able to present on every 15 minutes which Granite Hills also presented on and both schools did such an amazing job on it it focuses on the devastating effects that drinking while driving can have on not only personal safety but also the safety of others that suffer the consequences of actions that are not their own the every 15 minutes project has a goal to impact high school students especially Juniors and seniors and show the impact of their choices on their families friends and community this project has long-term effects on every participating community and the video allows for others to still be included we had an extremely successful turnout and plenty involvement at each event and hopefully we're able to leave a lasting impact on each student staff member and person in our community also the video is on YouTube if you guys want to go watch it the final major event that was held during the month of April was prom this year it was at the House of Blues in Anaheim and it was so much fun students had the chance to let loose dance little get their Fortune told into plenty of other activities and most importantly have fun with their friends we had about 480 students in attendance coming up this month we have a variety of activities going on like AP testing which started this week and we wish all of our students best of luck now to the parents of students who take these tests we just ask that you take it easy on us and give us a big hug after school because we need it to reward all of our students hard work we're holding a Renaissance field day next Friday and students who meet the requirements are able to attend they'll be able to visit food trucks plant some Inflatables and do multiple other activities with their friends many classes are also holding end of your field trips inner pathways are holding their end of your Banquets our sun double football program also held the annual Youth Football Camp which got younger students in our community involved and excited to be involved now on to exciting senior activities that we've been waiting for and heads up there's a lot so on the 10th is senior Awards senior Sunset is on the 17th senior dinner on the 21st senior checkout on the 22nd and 23rd grad night on the 25th and finally graduation on the 24th we're so excited to have these activities that we will look forward to for the last four years finally happening and even though we all have major cases of senioritis we're working hard for last month here once again avhs is extremely grateful for your support and I'm excited to see what next year brings to our community thank you for your time and constant interest in our community and we'll and I will see you all in two weeks to welcome the next group of people that have the same opportunity that I did and as always remember that Sun Devil pride is contagious thank you report Apple Valley Unified Teachers Association Karen sabers it's not here comments from the superintendent Renee Nelson [Music] I always love to watch the students get up Ashley Angelique and Cheyenne to do their presentations because what you see is real um actually stopping to pick up papers on her way to the podium um there's always a compliment from Cheyenne to whether it's other students or the audience for um their retirement tonight and Angelique you always just make us laugh because you bring it real you bring it real we're going to miss you and we hope that you each will come back in two weeks for us to recognize you I'll cry too Ashley so don't worry about it it's all good you've done an excellent job representing so next week two weeks from now be here on Thursday night to watch these ladies pass the the torch it was mentioned school lunch hero day is tomorrow May 5th teachers and classified staff will be recognized teachers the week of May 8th classified staff of the week of the 22nd with our ice cream social sandwich right in between we will be scooping come by have ice cream staff we we want to at least serve our ice cream like we used to and we're super excited about this year Mr par and I just returned from DC for a coordinated joint event with the California school boards Association in AXA the association of California school administrators it was an advocacy trip that is done this was the second annual trip we were able to meet with representative the representative obernal t with the goal of the trip to represent California school districts and the need for federal funding and or Express concerns about proposed changes that will impact our students here in Apple Valley topics were Broadband accessibility for students cyber security teacher shortages and special education needs for funding nutritional Services changes to many people are hearing about the current changes to the nutrition services what we can serve how we can serve it salt content it's open currently on the federal website and it's for public comment time so if you're interested please go in and look at this uh the other things that they wanted us to Advocate on behalf of were mental health support alternative school accountability this is a time for us to advocate for specifically Apple Valley by sharing our stories so um our district is different than others and we like to share specifics about it and we were able to do that although I shared the stats with the board I wanted to publicly share how well our Career Technical education programs are doing as evidenced by the 26 gold skillsusa winners at the state level most of these students will be moving on to Nationals there are a few that received gold in the area like Creed and Creed's top winner is at the state level so they will not be moving on to Nationals but the rest of the students will and they'll be competing at the end of June in Atlanta Georgia so we're excited to start the school year off with some information about who our winners are at the national level this was an lcap goal that was developed on the very first lcap in this district and we are seeing the fruits of the labor behind it we will be while we were in DC the district was well represented at the Mountain Desert career Pathways Consortium Gala staff were honored and five of the nine Oregon Foundation scholarships were from Apple Valley four thousand dollars a piece and I don't say that to just say you know we got five of the nine but when you think of all the districts that are represented by the Mountain Desert career Pathways for us to take five of those scholarships of nine is pretty amazing I was sad to miss the county distinguished Service Awards because of DC but I was able to see the presentation and appreciate Dustin recording Dr Powell's acceptance so that I could feel like I was actually there the county did send the official trailer it I believe is on the County website of the award winners and we were thrilled to have one of our nominees selected I was able to attend the multilingual recognition Awards on Friday Night Last Friday several of our parents were recognized for their volunteer time on our district advisory committee also at this event they provide three scholarships I've been attending this for years since it first since its Inception and time here in this District um three scholarships we have done really well in the scholarship Area 3 in 31 districts Apple Valley took two when I got up to take the picture with the two Award winners who received twenty seven hundred dollars I won from Granite one from Apple the young lady who was the third recipient was from Colton Unified School District and I told her I would welcome her into the picture because I was sure that when she became a biliterate attorney we might use her Services she was very sweet and she said she would stand aside but she would take me up on the offer in the future um this time of year is super busy many celebrations and activities with our students afternoons and evenings are filled with student events and performances and I just want to leave um with each one of The Proud students that the staff and the parents that help them to accomplish their goals and refine their talents this is the best time of year it's a sad night for us as we see retirees go but we also want to just recognize that next board meeting will be celebrating our students as well so thank you thank you all right board comments Rick sure thank you Dennis May 2nd so that was just Tuesday so that's the second Tuesday and the full week of May which is National Teachers Appreciation Day and that uh I wanted to say a few words I downloaded or something off the web here about uh this here teachers play a critical role in educating and shaping our children into the Future Leaders of the country these kind patient hard-working dedicated and understanding professionals help mold our children and guide them in a positive direction in Positive Directions we entrust our children with teachers during the school year and they play a pivotal role in their lives daily and I don't think that there's a person in this room that does not remember or have a teacher that impacted their life in a positive positive way you know teachers are right up there with parents with me I can remember back over over 50 years ago a couple of my teachers that were played a very pivotal role in my life and helped mold me into the person I am today so with that I just want to thank all the teachers at Apple Valley because we they do go unappreciated and it's more critical today in our society that we have role models for the children and as as teachers you are a role model and as the only non-teacher sitting up here as board members because most of the board members and have been teachers I I was not but I appreciate the job that is done and the dedication and and to society that teachers play so I just want to thank the teachers so thank you very much all right Amanda thanks Rick that's good yeah that was very well said thank you um so April was a very busy month and I feel like April was just warming up for May um I did have the pleasure of attending several events around the district um for me one highlight was at Apple Valley High School for the Arts Festival um the artwork was just incredible that the kids had out on display as well as drama and choir performances um just to kind of entertain the audience as well um and then uh I know I'm not supposed to have favorites but my favorite this month I have to say was the International Children's Day celebration um I don't know if you guys got a chance to go check that out but it was just phenomenal with all of the district and community volunteers that were there to support it and then I had the privilege of pulling the winning tickets for Mr Javier to read out and the Joy on the kids faces when they would like come running up with their ticket um it was just fantastic so I do want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to all the district and community volunteers who work tirelessly to celebrate diversity and make all of this possible within the district your efforts are truly appreciated and demonstrate the power of community here in Apple Valley and then finally as the school year does come to a close I want to congratulate all the retirees you guys are like graduates in your own right as well as the senior graduates and any of the students at our other campuses that will be promoting up to a new school so just congratulations and definitely ditto to what Mr Raleigh said very good thank you Gary as a school year is winding down I just want to make a note to about our athletic programs and I want to congratulate all the students the coaches the parents the volunteers for the tremendous success that all of our athletic programs have had this year and as we all know Athletics teaches such such important life skills that that aren't just in that sport but but to overflow into all aspects of our life things like teamwork self-sacrifice discipline perseverance satisfaction of doing one best and as we look across the Spectrum at all of our schools and all of our athletic programs you know starting back in the fall with uh football and soccer wrestling tennis basketball baseball volleyball golf swimming track all of the sports have enjoyed such tremendous success and so I know all of all the other board members join me in just congratulating the students the coaches the volunteers the parents especially carting the kids to the to the events and then picking them up you know when it's dark and cold and windy I mean it could do it without the parents so I just wanted to make a special note of a congratulations for all of our athletic programs had the uh the the honor of uh visiting one of our swim meets uh it was actually the last meet of the of the year uh spent a minute with Coach Garcia and he was sharing with me that they have an extremely successful year this year uh he shared with me that that if I remember the number right 10 of their athletes had CIF qualifying times which is the the most we've ever had that as long as far back as I can remember so I mean and that's that's just a microcosm of everything that's going on throughout throughout all the schools and so on so tremendous success there also went to the seventh and 8th grade track meet at Mariana and in contrast to today it was actually hot last week and and yet here's all these it was over a hundred uh seventh and 8th graders out there running you know out by uh testing Rants and the railroad tracks doing their best out there when it was hot and just just you know just giving it their all and so again it's it's just a microcosm just a little snapshot of what goes on every day a in our Athletic program so coaches parents students we appreciate you and we congratulate you on the tremendous success that you've had this year I also had a chance to visit the food pantry a little bit and and just um be excited about what goes on at our family center every single day but especially on Fridays uh thank you to Aurora to showing me around and showing me a little bit of the ropes and it is it is unbelievably impressive what what the staff here does every single week to minister to so many households in the community not just necessarily student households but just households in the community making a tremendous effect and it just it just shows how how much uh the the staff and the volunteers here in the Apple Valley District are really um such an asset to the community and and really putting putting representing us so well so so thank you to Marianne Torres and everybody involved in the food pantry it was a tremendous learning experience for me as trena mentioned about the Mountain Desert career pathways Awards you know so many students were awarded there for the for the hard work that they do for the skill that they have and and I was expect especially excited to see a Stephanie Arredondo and Gretchen Pratt getting Awards there for their outstanding effort so uh thank you very much and thank you for everyone who's involved in that and then finally us a number of us were able to go to the to the shock graduation I held just a couple of weeks ago in case you don't know what that means shock stands for self-discipline honor obedience character and knowledge and of 15 students went through that very rigorous program in cooperation not just with the district but with uh representatives from the sheriff's department from the United States military and uh these were students that had a difficult time in in the classroom environment but yet they they uh you know with the cooperation of the district and uh of these other entities were able to complete this this very rigorous and demanding program and really build some really positive life skills so just just a fantastic program very impressed with it so thank you very much to everyone here in the district Who's involved in that so that's all very good Maria [Applause] well I'm going to start by congratulating all the teachers who are my colleagues I see you all as my colleagues uh Frank I see you back there um um and we I would say we all grew up together as teachers and I must say that you you assume that rule that is written in Latin loco parentis you arrived here and you take the kids and you have no questions asked and you mold them to become that student that returns to you after the fact after many of you who are elementary teachers you never see the results of your work until they go to high school or middle school and they are writing about the best teacher that has touched them um and they do that in high school when I was teacher I had my students write my daughter who was a teacher a student here wrote about her kindergarten teacher when she was in college um and so I have to say that I am exceedingly proud to call myself a fellow teacher and I congratulate you um in this month of May um and also the first teachers that those children have are their parents I thank you as well because you have done a marvelous job to send us your your pride and joy and we do our best with it um I yes I did go to the shock program yes I did follow the superintendent to Washington DC um and yes if you thought I was going to get arrested but I I managed uh but I managed I managed to um behave myself because I know that I I am still representing a school district I'm not there for myself um I was able to go to Mariana um Academy to participate in their finished strong activity um I thought it was interesting because I didn't think the principal would notice that I was there I just wanted to be part of it to actually absorb what the students were going through and I thought it was a fabulous experience I also went to the high school musical at Granite Hills High School and I also snuck in and it was during the recess or whatever they call it intermission that they realized that I was there I always like to go to these things just to absorb the experience to see the experience of those students and really watch how especially in finals week the students were still memorizing their lines I was beyond impressed I went to sleep Academy and we saw Shrek and I thought it was interesting of all days the the the electricity had an issue um but I don't know how to fix electricity but the superintendent was there so she found a way to make it happen um so and then of course I went to um Phoenix Academy and we went to all of the classrooms some of the classrooms and such fabulous things that the teachers were doing but you know to complete my my my uh thing I I just want to talk about the kitchen um the the food pantry um because we we talk about this food pantry and we don't really give it enough enough um skin over it um I was looking at the data that we we just we just received in March as of March 31st this food pantry has served 655 families and it's not families from Apple Valley it's families from the high desert in April as of April 7th they served 654.
