last two years and represented the student perspective with maturity honesty dignity passion and compassion thank you kit and RNA for your time and your commitment I appreciate you and know that your feedback and input make a difference so thank you again today is a big day after 13 years in school you are closing the first biggest chapter in your lives normally I would stand here and say I can only imagine how you must be feeling because let's face it it's been a few years since I graduated from high school however this year graduation ceremonies take on a whole new meaning for me I'm graduating with you after 33 years in education I too am graduating not from high school but I'm graduating from my career on June 30th I will officially retire after a fulfilling career with Academy District 20 so this year as I stand here before you making my final graduation speech I think we may share some similar feelings over the past week I've experienced a host of emotions I've been excited I've been anxious eager nervous exhausted and ready to turn off the alarm clock and sleep in maybe you have experienced one or two of these same feelings but when I'm not thinking about how great it will feel to sleep in I find myself doing a lot of reflecting reflecting on the past year and on the past 33 years graduation day is certainly a day of Celebration but I think it's also a natural day of reflection for us all including friends and family sitting in the audience when I reflect on the past 33 years of working in education I realized that in that time I've learned and experienced a lot and been impacted by thousands of people you too in your 13 years of school have learned and experienced a lot and been impacted and impacted many other folks our experiences could fill books or maybe these days gain a lot of likes or something while reflecting on all those experiences I find myself most thinking about gratitude and making sure those who have helped me know how thankful I am for their belief in me their trust their support and their encouragement I also find myself thinking about what is most important in our lives throughout my life and career I've been fortunate to be around some very special people they have helped me in so many ways but often I was so wrapped up in the moment or consumed Ed by how busy I was or thinking about what was coming next I didn't take the time to acknowledge impactful people and simply say thank you if I could go back I would say thank you to many people and say it more often but specifically I would like to take this opportunity to thank somebody that I've never thanked publicly or even in person before her name is Miss Flory Miss Flor is one of my High School Math teachers she not only made math interesting and fun by the way I'll just cont contextually I was not a very good math student very average at best but she made me feel confident in my mathematical knowledge and abilities she was passionate about math but delivered her instruction with compassion and care for students she taught me that math was important but it was not most important little did she or I know at the time that I would go on to pursue math as an undergraduate and finish with a degree in mathematics so today I say thank you to miss Flor Miss Flory is one person I wish I had thanked years ago I have so many more to thank for their impact on me but I'll spare you all of that you get the idea take time before 40 years pass to show gratitude to the special people in your lives so today I encourage you to move forward with gratitude thank all those who support you encourage you and lift you up not only will it make them feel great it will also make you feel great in fact research so gratitude has several benefits living with gratitude improves your overall health grateful people experience fewer aches and pains and Report feeling healthier than others grateful people sleep sleep better and feel more rested and maybe most importantly those who spread thanks and share gratitude report lower levels of stress higher levels of self-esteem and make and keep friends easier it is hard to argue with these benefits cultivating gratitude or what we may call developing an attitude of gratitude is one of the most overlooked Tools in our toolbox the simple Act of saying thank you is mutually beneficial it will lead you to a happier and more successful life in the future my Reflections in past weeks also reminded me to keep the most important things in life at the Forefront and not let the little things dominate your time time or treasure so I will close with a short story adapted from a college classroom that best summarizes this concept A teacher stood before her class and had some items in front of her she picked up a very large empty glass manise jar proceeded to fill that jar with golf balls filled it to the top she then asked the students if the jar was full full they agreed that it was the teacher then picked up a box of small Pebbles and poured them into the same jar she shook the jar lightly the Pebbles rolled in between the open spaces between the golf balls and she then asked the students again if the jar was full again they agreed it was full the teacher next picked up a box of sand and poured sand into the jar gave it a gentle shake and the sand filled up the remaining voids she asked once more if the jar was full and the students with a bit more frustration and vigor responded Yes the jar is full now said the teacher I want you to imagine that this jar represents your life the golf balls are the most important things your family your faith your health your friends your passions and if everything else was lost and only the golf balls remained your life would still be full the Pebbles are the other things that matter like School your home your job or your career and the sand is everything else the very small stuff now just think what would happen if you filled the jar with sand first there'd be no room for the Pebbles or the golf balls the same goes for life if you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff you'll never have room for the things that are most important pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness spend time with your siblings your parents your faith visit with friends take your grandparents to dinner play another 18 thank a special person for being special there will always be time for the small stuff take care of the golf balls first the things that really matter the things you will always be grateful for set your priorities because the rest is just sand congratulations graduates I thank you for allowing me to share in your celebration go forth and make your mark on this world keep what is most important a priority and live life with an attitude of gratitude thank you and congratulations to [Applause] all please help me welcome The One and Only Live car to the stage as she sings the song Breakaway [Applause] [Music] when the rain fall I just around my dreaming what could be and I up happy I would p trying to reach out when I to out like could hear me wanted to belong here but something so here so i' pray I could break away I'll spread my way and I'll learn how to fly I'll do what ites till I T and I'll Make A Wish take a chance make a change and break out of the darkness and into the Sun but I won't forget thees that I've loved and I'll make a risk and take a chance make a change and break [Music] away want to feel the warm breze sleep under a palm tree Feel the Rush of the and get on board a fast train travel on a j plane far Ro away and break away I'll SP my wings and I'll learn how to fly I'll do what it t till I touchy and I'll Make A Wish and take a chance make a change and I w't forget the place I come from I got to take a risk and take a chance make a change and break away break away break away [Music] amazing job Liv every year we have students audition to give a speech at graduation and we have two students um today that are going to to present to us and so right now I would like to um introduce our Suma Kum loud speaker Mr Lock faly Mr faly as many of you know is a brilliant student but seriously one of the funniest people I know so without any further Ado I would like to introduce the amazing lock [Applause] faly hello everyone my name is L faly and I am honored to be a senior speaker here at Air Academy as per tradition I'd like to start by giving a huge congratulations to the class of 2023 and a massive thank you to all the teachers parents and peers who helped us reach this point congrats everyone we did it great now that I have that cliche off the Bingo sheet I'd like to change course just a little bit I figure it might be good to try something a bit different since most graduation speeches sound about the same anyway when I came to this school as a freshman I didn't have any sort of plan I'll venture to say that most of you were just as intimidated as I was by the bigger School the larger group of people normally I continue this train of thought to talk about how much we've all changed as people since then but what if that's not the full picture maybe just maybe the things that the traits that have stayed the same are equally as important to us as those that have continued to evolve we all know that we've changed over our four years here now that can be physically through our height I'm looking at you grant or mentally through our changing interests or personality what I don't think many of us have considered recently are the parts of us that have stayed the same unwavering Through The Years some of us knew the moment we walked through air Academy's doors that a single class or Club interested us and we spent the time and effort to improve through that through the years for me band was my home and gave me a place to improve my musical skill and learn how to act as a leader those of us who didn't have a strong sense of direction however were still Guided by our incredible staff to search for the interest that best suited us you see we all have these simple values set in stone that Define us as students friends and peers well it is vital that we appreciate what has stayed the same and held firm it is equally important that we recognize how we've changed over the years taking a risk by trying a new hobby despite how strange it may be working to improve and advance in a new class no matter how difficult it is and developing new sides of yourself as a person are all important and even vital aspects to how we change through High School none of us would have predicted that Gustavo Lambert could be a face of school spirit in our freshman year but hey here we are huh at a time when we are all finding out what we want to achieve in life the act of trying new activities or methods is key to improving and connecting to our community and ourselves without Taking Chances none of us would truly push ourselves as people here at Air Academy we are surrounded by an incredibly talented and well-rounded student body when I look around this Arena I see hundreds of students who came into these doors with the willingness to achieve something in their time here Finn horsefall Caitlyn vill and Sam beer star through our basketball swim and football teams pushing the limits and breaking through boundaries on their path towards greatness Ben rathy and Jasmine ster are only two of countless performers transforming their ideas into music and our incredible music programs will Drew Colbert and livar Elevate our theater and other Visual Arts courses with their variety of creative expression on an academic level rethna uni Krishan has worked in her time at Air Academy in order to be on The Cutting Edge of data analytics when she's out of here and my own sister Lola faly has inspired me by committing to her engineering focus and striving to push herself in and out of school every day but none of those abilities came about overnight reaching our potential takes a mixture of unwavering focus and commitment from our core values and our willingness to break through those to improve and to advance five 10 20 years from now I look forward to seeing you all find your own path to success some of us may climb the ranks of the military innovate in the workforce strive towards a higher degree or even adventure around the world but that all starts right now with a single opportunity with our our high school careers nearing their end we all have the chance to change the future to make a world better suited for generations to come by taking those Dynamic and static values from our years here we have the capability to make a legitimate change for our future oh wait yeah that's a bingo this sort of chance may be daunting but after four years with y'all I know each and every one of you are ready to take on the task Cadet let's make the most of it congratulations once again to the class of 20 23 I wish each and every one of you the best of luck in creating your own future [Applause] scet please welcome our choir led by director Miss Austina Lee and accompanied by Mr West Sparks as they perform Omnia soul for [Music] I [Music] cross threshold to life we sing [Music] your and my [Music] heart stay your the journey May [Music] long heart [Music] soul [Music] streng the let courage be your let passion be your W and truth will guide your deep through [Music] all your soul and my [Music] heart stay your hand the Journey B Bel and when we [Music] androw heart [Music] my [Music] when we B and sorrow can [Music] be your heart [Music] [Applause] beautiful job congratulations choir our next speaker is our is our last student speaker of the of the morning morning and she is another incredible incredible young woman with a tremendous future smart funny kind all of the words describe Miss Cali rewald please give her a warm welcome thank you hi everyone my name is Callie rewald and I'm honored to be standing in front of you all today before I begin I'd like to say thank you to all the outstanding teachers and staff members at Air Academy for helping each and every one of us be the best we can be I can't count the number of times I went in early to get help on an assignment or needed support and every time the teachers and staff members were always there to help I would also like to say thank you to all my fellow Cadet for making these past four years so amazing every day was truly like a new adventure I'll be one of the many people to say to you today congratulations we made it well this cliche phrase is accurate and we should all rejoice in the joyous accomplishment it skims over the true nature of the achievement that we have accomplished this phrase is like enjoying the view at the top of the mountain when in reality we should be reflecting upon the tremendous climb that we have just completed the theme of my speech for today comes from one of the greatest people I know Miss Taylor Swift who wrote the outstanding lyrics shake it off which is what we have all done as we've encountered many struggles throughout our time in high school we have all had many ups and downs throughout our four years in high school we've been through online school where we all stay in bed in our pajamas and hope the teacher wouldn't call on us and we've had school with mass where true face-to-face contact seemed to be so long gone and we've also all had challenging and frustrating classes where we struggle to understand all the material wanting to punch the wall when we couldn't figure out the products of a decomposition reaction or when we couldn't understand what in the world Shakespeare was trying to tell us and we've all been on schooo submitting our assignments at 11:59 p.m.

okay okay okay [Music] thank you [Music] yes [Music] position [Music] s yes I will come back [Music] yes it was perfect yeah that's great [Music] perfect families and friends we are so excited to see all of you here welcome and this is our first Christmas um preschoolers are pretty unpredictable a lot of fun so just enjoy yourself and and know what we welcome you to stay on the first mission preschool graduations um JoJo sit down one to someone right there okay good morning I'm glad everyone made it good afternoon anyway second graduation I should be I should have the sample it's our first official year of having preschool graduation so this is new to us um this year we have what a group of fantastic kids that have learned procedures they work hard they play hard and we just have fun but man do we learn a lot you guys we do learn most of all we learn to have fun and learn and wake up in the morning because do we love school yeah so it's okay um I want to thank all of you Grandma's Grandpa's parents that raise the children without you teaching these children would be difficult because I can always call and let people show up bring stuff um most importantly you love your children they need that first thing they need loves and hugs and positive influence technical getting them to school getting these guys I know it's hard for them some days but man the minute they walk in that room they might be zombies that we get moving and they are smiling and having the best time and they love it they love learning and that's you know in my class I see it they push each other they go get writing tablets they're writing we have tables you can ride on and they are you know with each other like writing each other's names and making you know writing numbers and I'm like how do you know how to write three thousand or it started off with writing how old I was and then we decided how old am I Xavier 3 000 million years old I think is what he tells me 20 million hundred thousand years old so they actually push each other a lot to learn and it's it's just fun this group is fun and they pick up things so fast that you bringing them to school every day reading to them encouraging that and always I tell parents because they're amazed sometimes of the things that these guys can do and it's the expectations we have like you're in preschool you know you have to take care of your snack you're going to take you know your paper towel water it up with whatever's left dump it in the trash you get your milk you take it to the sink you dump out your milk you throw your trash away I know we don't do that at home because we find wrappers on them yeah so guess what they know where the trash can is and they also know how to move plates places but always hold those expectations don't ever think oh they're only three or four because they can do it and they they love that so keep that up keep getting them to school the learning is fun and the love of school is what will make them successful um we will start out by we're gonna ask them what they love about school so get ready for listening and I did not pay them I have several that are now saying they love this online I think yes okay Missy can I have all of my graduate stand up please let's stand up and follow me please you guys can work in front of this is Olivia please thank you oh very nice we all have a red spot I know that's hard don't look at people you love because we're going to make funny faces so grandpa say stop being naughty this is why Mr koi has to say stop it dad's not your grandpa Xavier points at you Danny that was exactly okay so we'll start off CeCe are you ready what do you Love About Preschool she loves Center centers is where we will have four or five different activities um I think she does like she'll have kids with her family has kids at her table um I know mine like we have a sensory sound we might have dramatic play we might be building things we might be doing some type of a craft but I do ABCs and find Motors Miss Joslin does math activities so it's where we rotate but everything we do we do it fun like in preschool we do lots of Hands-On um we do games when we count and do numbers and when we do letters we you know we look for the letters so everything's fun but they don't realize that we're learning so much that they have a great time so Center is um he just goes wherever um [Music] what happened [Music] okay good afternoon parents grandparents and family everyone wants to welcome you to our it's our first official preschool graduation so excuse us if we're because I'm kind of that way um but I think the kids are ready they're excited for summer I'm not sure um but they're fantastic kids um all of them have they've done an amazing job this year they've grown immensely and following procedures and they're learning they love learning and that's what I love about this group they push each other not you know competitively but when they have free moments they're getting the writing tablets and they're trying to write the biggest numbers or having you know I'm writing my name I'm writing my friend's name so their love of learning is great and hopefully they carry that through but I want to thank all of you parents grandparents whoever is home with these children you know keep keep encouraging their love of learning their reading my class for sure loves books so keep encouraging those things and always give them expectations you might not think these kiddos can um clean up their snack dump their milk in the in the sink put straws in the trash they do it every single day they clean up their messes they do it all they come back what may I do you know just so give them those expectations because they can do it your love is appreciated all of these kids they have you know I can't wait Dad's getting me just their love for each other they're like for teachers their love for family is great um but also just encouraging them and getting him here every day most of them love coming but I know what it's like sometimes like well but it's a lot as parents I get it especially if you have more than one child even sometimes just one child they kind of like I don't want to go but you get them here because that's that's the biggest part of it if they're not here regularly then they lose out but I haven't had very many many that have missed a lot and it's and they do once they walk in that door and they're first like don't go mom then it's like oh wait it's party time so yeah getting them here is part of the game and that's I appreciate all of you also to support I know my team or my parents and yours too have been if I need something you do it you know the contact on remind you know always always be that person that contacts teachers and asks you know do you need anything or how are they doing um that's that's huge too um we are going to start and I need my preschool graduates to stand up and I need you add on follow that when we're going to line up on this spot and we're gonna we're gonna see what our favorite thing about preschool was I've got about 50 different answers so we're going to see what the final answer is first of all it was Center Center Center Center Center centers you could be like okay let's think of something so let's we're gonna find out what the final answer is are you guys ready it's okay it's okay I'll stand with you okay I'll stay with you okay I'll let you tell me and I'll tell them okay it's okay you're beautiful there's no reason look at this girl all right Miss Adelaide we're gonna start with you can you tell us what was the very best thing about preschool tell them say going outside in our recess area we have a really great playground and that was fun wasn't it we usually got to play with both classes didn't we so we had sometimes 30 little children out there they love it they get to run and play and it's in the shade great good answer Maddie can you tell us what your favorite part of three pool was oh we have a centers centers are um basically like we'll have four or five stations like in my class I work with students on letters and Fine Motors we have a mass station at Paris working with them we have sensory where they get in all the fun stuff sometimes a dramatic play and a building center or a craft so they we do a center and when we rotate so they're fine but they're also learning funds so those are definitely a hit Miss Zoe what was your favorite thing about preschool oh you love me this is my mini me like I told him like it's time for Halloween because everything that I say is that's one right she's fantastic chance your turn what is your final answer yeah what is your favorite part about preschool you've had several you can say Mrs Hill Mr clary's idea I'm not sure which one so they'll have their name on it and then on the back it has every year kindergarten first so they can put their handprint on it and they're large so then maybe they'll be able to wear them when they're a senior so you can have them reenact don't call me because I'll be in the nursery okay um oh and then once they come and get their shirt and their certificate I'm gonna have them bring those to you parents so then we don't have to hold them and have drinks and the whole world right okay so here we go I am going to start with Miss adeline's poll Adeline was one of my all day kiddos and she's I would say the things I think about her she has the jumping ability of Spider-Man she climbs mountains we literally have a little mountain in the back um she's a jumper she loves learning and she is a great helper she's one of my older kids and so she's always the one that will come in and when I have a new suit or kids that kind of be a little more that about her she's very caring and she's very lovey she will go up to her friends and I love you and I love that about her because we all need a hug and know that someone loves us even embracing all right ready Zoey let's smile okay um hey and then we have Mr chance Hopkins t-shirt and just go ahead and go yeah yeah okay this is Mr chance thank you you guys have a seat right there back on your of this meeting for being provided by the Board of Education in the January 9 2023 and January 12 2023 notice in the Asbury Park Press and the co-star setting forth a date time and location of this meeting similar notice has been posted in the Borough Hall the Brielle School website and the girls clerk has been notified Mr Becker Dr d'ambrosio Mrs Jones president Mrs McDevitt Mr milanceowicz Mrs Reed Mr Vitale this is Walsh and Mr Walton here and if everyone can stand for the flexes one Nations [Music] and if someone can make a lotion to approve in the next make that motion about so okay [Music] I'll make a motion improvements I'll send you that brochure yes this is Jones yes [Music] is this week yes this is Walsh yes okay and now um presentations [Music] very nice to see everyone here this evening as you all know we are here to honor four very special people who have committed drum roll total of 88 years to the children in Brielle elementary school so just right there [Applause] little awkward for me because I don't know these four individuals as well as all of you do but I can say in my short time here when you look at the Special Sauce that makes a good educator one of the things that always kind of bubbles to the top is that they care about kids and I can say without question in my short time here that these four Educators truly truly care about the children they work with on a daily basis whether they're a speech teacher or in the classroom or working with them as an administrator the care that comes through on a daily basis is entirely evident and it's really a lot of fun to watch so I applaud all four of you on your service to Children over the years they're lucky to have you and the impact that you make will go on and on and on and that's one of the beautiful things about being an educator so I'm so so proud of all of you and so please not that you retired because you're going to enjoy your retirement I did ask Mr savior who knows you a little better to maybe say a word or two before each of you come up to be recognized so I appreciate it yeah yes won't be as long as Chris would have done so the meeting will be about half as long I guess we'll just go in order from the agenda with uh Mike tricano been here for 24 years and I think Mike come on [Applause] and it's from pretty much the start of the morning where he's coming in asking you know Ally if anybody needs coverage for lunch to be and things like that but he gets the eighth graders they get him and the biggest thing that I've noticed is that you really understand how to tell a story in history I think that the kids really do take the moment when you're sitting down and going over that and they can sense your site in that story when you're telling me so if that's one thing that I've noticed each and every time whether I'm in your classroom or walking down your hallway for that I thank you on behalf of our kids so congratulations a little something on behalf of the Board of Education and the community of three outline thank you so much thank you I I've loved it here and I'm not going to say much because I get choked up so it's my to my home for 24 years thank you [Applause] I guess I should ask someone's gonna get emotional because it started okay I guess next time we're going to go with Phyllis Pinkett Smith [Applause] I don't even think the night ended before I've got about four or five emails when we basically you know took your resignation from the board meeting is this true this can't be true as it was typed or you know what is going on how are we going to kind of replace you and the biggest thing for me Phyllis to you is you've never put your schedule and I know you put your schedule together for the kids you never put your schedule together with you in mind your schedule always reflected what this what the needs were for the students you really didn't look at the overall day when were you going to eat I think I could try to do that and things like that so I mean it's hasn't gone unless so I greatly appreciate all of the love that you've given to all of our students and again just the cheers that you're hearing when you kind of stood up it's reflected with every student that you've ever uh the precious you know time to be with them so again congratulations and best of luck on your time [Applause] thank you [Applause] [Music] okay uh more McGinnis [Applause] I think more really gets math and students that you work with understand that and I really appreciate I enjoy kind of the way that I was in the classroom that you do take the time during the day to forge those relationships with your peers I know that's going to be a big part of your day that you're going to miss you're probably going to be looking at that clock and seeing what time of day it is you're always welcome if you want to come in during that time and again I had some numerous parents also reach out you know about this is true even though it's just it's just really recent because it's on this agenda itself right so again congratulations best of luck thank you I'll be here at 1 30 for lunch [Applause] but not least is Jen love [Applause] yes I knew the previous life before coming here but again her dedication to the district for the last 24 years just in her new position I mean everyone in the building knows dated you are to the students here in Brielle and uh it's going to be a tough act to follow she was part of the process to try to find that person but again I believe being a part of the school prior to taking your position everyone knowing how hard you work in whatever position it's been in from kindergarten up to being you know coach to being a supervisor they know how hard you work so it made it a lot easier when you ask them to do something because they all know you wouldn't have asked them to do something that you wouldn't find yourself so again congratulations our loss is Virginia's game all right congratulations thank you [Applause] I usually do a presentation but I'm not going to not do that and usually like to have an organized thing to say so this is hard for me to even just pull out this crinkled piece of paper um but I want to thank everyone for coming tonight um for all four of us you know to support us and there's a few people I just wanted to thank and a couple uh things I want fewer that I wanted to share so I wanted to thank the Board of Education I know you all weren't here when I was hired the board hired me 24 years ago and at that time I was commuting an hour and a half each day three to four hours a day and I had a little one at home he was three which I know all of you know him now he's 28 hopefully watching from Tampa hi Mark and Jen for watching and so I'm always will be forever grateful for that um I wanted to thank my family who's all here today for supporting me my time in Brielle has been with like way too many memories to share from my teaching uh to coaching to now supervising for those of you who don't know my first nine years here I spent as a kindergarten teacher it was beyond me getting to see those students go all the way through eighth grade have them come back and visit they put a smile on my face every day and that's why I've decided to go back to be a kindergarten teacher when I retire to go to Virginia um and the most rewarding thing and I Morris is here I think he's the only one but three of my kindergarten teacher students are now my colleagues oh and he was here too yes with three of them I work with um so that so that's where I leave I'm going to make sure they all call into the store um on top of that the past 24 years I've been more than lucky to work with amazing colleagues um not only colleagues but people that I've developed friendships with that I know are going to last a lifetime um as their colleagues supervisor and friends we've developed and shared memories that I know are going to last a lifetime and will never be forgotten for me um in the past two years like Tom said we'd go back a really long time we're fellow Borough Panthers and the past two years we've worked really closely together and we've gone through a lot of challenges and I just wanted to thank you for always supporting me during those times and being a friend um our new addition Mr John Russo when we heard you were coming and especially since I was leaving I'm like oh you know what is this going to be like um but I never would have imagined how much I could have learned from someone in such a short amount of time and the four of us have made such a fabulous team so it makes it that much harder between the teachers and the students and the administrative team that we have on put together I will need three volunteers before I leave one to make the coffee two to bring an endless supply of coffee and most of all somebody to always answer Mr patosa's questions so just you can come by at any time and let me know if you want to be yours and as I start the next chapter of my life with Bob in Virginia I'm always going to remember my Brielle family and I'll never forget you and I'm always a phone hallway if anyone ever needs anything so thank you [Applause] thank you we're gonna take a two three five minute break to give you an opportunity for pictures and to mingle for a minute or two before we commence with the rest of our board meeting so enjoy each other's company for a few minutes and then you're welcome to leave if you'd like or you're also welcome to study so thank you everyone for coming congratulations to our retirees I'm not one thank you foreign thank you foreign thank you foreign

breakfast right over there all right thanks I don't know ladies and gentlemen we're gonna ask everybody to come out onto the field please come out onto the field closer to the pictures together like a family all right board members Board of Education members please could stay by uh By Me [Music] thank you we're gonna get started in just about a minute do you put this up on the school website then that's so great that is a substantial limit thank you please please okay ladies and gentlemen so close ladies and gentlemen good afternoon Board of Education commissioners distinguished guests members of the community students faculty staff administrators welcome to the ribbon cutting for the Woodrow Wilson Middle School Athletic Complex couldn't ask for a much better day than this to officially open this complex before we begin I would like to ask the Mad caps under the directions uh under the direction of Mr Weiss mantle to come up and sing the national anthem [Applause] all right [Music] sleeping [Music] we're so good let me screaming [Music] us [Music] foreign [Music] [Applause] [Music] at this time we have a special uh song presentation by one of our students who just happens to be on our baseball team here is Ariel spear with his rendition of God Bless America [Applause] through the mountains to the Prairie from the oceans [Music] God bless America my own sweet home [Music] oh God Bless America land that I love stand beside her and guide her through the night with the light from above through the mountains through the Prairie from the oceans what we thought yeah this America oh sweet [Music] great job ladies and gentlemen another round of applause please I've got to come up here and do that great job [Applause] ladies and gentlemen there are many distinguished guests uh here today our Board of Education president Mr Jim Smith will be speaking after me and is going to acknowledge um some of our dignitaries here but before he does that I would like to acknowledge some of the people who made this field there's a dream a reality when we passed a 168 million dollar referendum in April of 2021 it was the largest ever in the history of the state of New Jersey and we only did that through the help and the support of a variety of stakeholders in this community that cared about our school district and that wanted to see us improve in order to get this done we had a committee of stakeholders known as the referendum committee and if you were on that committee you made a difference and you were responsible for why we're here today so please if you were on our referendum committee could you please raise your hands and let's give them a round of applause these people work tirelessly on their own time to get the word out to get the vote out and that referendum passed with a two to one uh majority so it was amazing and the the funny thing is this beautiful was actually the smallest part of the referendum compared to all the other work that's going on our district this is really a very very small amount of that 168 million dollars but perhaps it's the most visible because if you remember what this field looked like and what our varsity baseball players the field that they had to play on and The Spectators that had no seats and there were no restrooms and our phys Ed classes at Woodrow Wilson Middle School couldn't come out and play and use the field for phys ed class and to look at what we have here today truly truly a remarkable achievement and I think that deserves another round of applause by yesterday and I saw students out on the field for phys Ed playing kickball smiling happy the Sun was shining uh not worrying about tripping in potholes and Goose feces and all the other things that came along with what we used to deal with but we don't have to deal with that anymore and there's another important thing that we promised when we asked this community to vote for the referendum we promised that this field would not just be for our students that it would be for the community so as you can see we have not only this beautiful baseball field but uh regulation size soccer field which will have removable bleachers and seating for spectators and that's going to be for the community's use or our Recreation Department who's a partner with us um all of the leagues that are are in are in Clifton our young children are going to be able to use this and and because it's turf it's going to be able to be used probably 11 to 12 almost almost 12 months out of the year we're going to be able to use it all year with the exception of of when there's snow on the ground so that is truly something great for this entire Community it truly is something for everyone so thank you again at this time uh I want to introduce our Board of Education president before I do today we have a commemorative baseball for most of you I think we have about a hundred at the end of the ceremony our Board of Education members are going to be giving out these baseballs which are stamped with our one Clifton logo that was our logo that we utilized during the referendum and it is still something we believe in here in Clifton that we are one Clifton and it also has a stamp with the date uh today's date uh the ribbon cutting ceremony for Woodrow Wilson Middle School Athletic Complex uh Clifton Public School District May 17 2023 so um you all going to get one of these to take home today we also my my favorite part about today is we also have a hot dog truck compliments of pomptonian Our Food Service Company I think we have some popcorn and maybe some Italian ices and some other treats so after the ceremony please grab a hot dog grab a snack stay for the game we got a game today at 4 30.

okay can you hear me okay just talking regularly okay so one request we are online so if we can just be in the proximity of this location that's remote that's cool cool I'm just going to start by saying hello good evening my name is Donald Lewis I'm the superintendent for Creighton School District eighth year and my final um I have uh 24 more school days that it's breaking my heart mostly because this is coming and it's been in my heart and head for 20 years when I was a second grade teacher I took 67 students up to patient to Kohl's Ranch and we dug through fossils and my seven-year-olds who stayed there for three nights some of whom were still bed wetters which I didn't get when I was in my 20s I was like what what do you mean and we did all sorts of things with Apostles and they learned and painted that Arizona was once in the ocean because the fossils were living examples of recipel every single one because they were true paleontologists and they understood life cycles of streams and we talked about ecosystems of outdoors and so by getting excited about that kind of learning and knowing the kids need to be outside when we live in a cement center-based hot City the fact that we can dream of a place where kids can simulate and mimic and become paleontologists or experts in ecology or gardeners or people who understand biology I the the ideas of the curriculum are so vast and of course we can plug the standards into it of course we can plug the high level community but the the relevance is so high and so I may apply to be the Principal I love the schools careful I'm not sure everybody would approve but but uh honestly I have people are saying what are you gonna do when you're retired I'm like well I might be a ranger you know I'm really so passionate about outdoors and a kid that the higher they get from the nature and Outdoors does that means thank you when they're outside when you ask kids what's your favorite school what do they say energy and so when we think about teaching ecosystems and interdependence of life cycles um I I just know we're going to build this amazing space and I think it's going to be a huge attraction for Phoenician kids who are in so many ways trapped by concrete that uh I wish my kids weren't 30 or I'd send them here but then I got told we'll have them teach like that might work so I um I hope to come back and just be in the audience and being with pride whenever the ribbon cutting ceremony is because I'm so in love with this is our new incoming superintendent fees with um Eric and the team on this development a lot of you are here in the world again thank you very much let's step over here because I think we're trying to capture some of this so I'll Stand closer to the mics and some so soft-spoken but um so I will talk louder see I told you I was soft-spoken um so you know I I made a statement a couple of weeks ago and in talking with teachers over the last couple of weeks I've heard reinforcement for the statement and that statement was we always talk about engagement in the classroom and I really don't think we have an engagement problem I think kids are 100 engaged all the time that engagement just might not be with the lesson or might not be with what's being learned in class because trust me if they're not focused on what's happening in class they will find something else to be engaged in and that's going to create some problems so one of the things that we're really excited about in relation to this campus is the concept of having a design that helps kids not only be engaged with some different aspects of learning that aren't always available to them but that also gets them grounded and centered from having this ability to get outside and get into the outdoors as part of their educational experience there's a bunch of research that says and this is going to sound really bizarre but if you look at a tree it lowers your heart rate almost your circadian rhythms and it actually just puts you into a better physical state of being which affects your emotional well-being and all of that so that is a lot of the the drive behind wanting to create an environment that helps students in that way but also in trying to build an instructional model that not only leverages the campus and the features of the campus but also helps kids be scientists and get exposure to project-based learning science scientific opportunities to be able to enhance their understanding of the world but also to be able to grow their skills and abilities so with that I just want to share a little bit about what's going to happen this evening so we have Phil Weddle from Wilmore and architects who have been doing the design on the campus um Phil is going to share some of the design components of the site and showcase the things that have been already integrated into the design and possibly even some of the challenges that we're still overcoming and then we have Martha Hernandez with us I think and she just told me too she has been our Muse of instructional elements for the campus and she's going to share some of the concepts behind that and that and trying to accomplish by building a school that's different that's out there and we also have with us this evening folks from Facilities Management Tammy Caraway is here with us they are the project managers that are helping us with the site design and we also have and also to thank for supporting us with Refreshments this evening and also in the reconstruction site and depending on what happens with GMP on Google what's the actual construction of the site we have folks from Chase Building team and we have Barry Chase himself has turned out this evening to be here as well thank you so in addition to that effort among you um are some of the folks who have been kind enough to served on our combination design Vision team and the reason we combine vision and design was when we built our last school this amazing school and then said yeah and then so we had sort of carton horse thing where we figured out the vision for the school after the facility had already been in the process of being built and this time we've been trying to interleave those things and leave them together so that way it performs a hole that's greater than the solar so with that I am going to turn it over to Mr I don't know um thanks for being here tonight just wanted to give you a brief overview of the uh design where we're at and give you a little bit of taste for what's coming uh next to the project um first just in terms of uh some of the stakeholder engagement process and I recognize many of you that have been involved in this process over the past year but we've had a lot of great feedback and input from a diverse group of stakeholders on this project um and have received a lot of comments and directions for thoughts about things that we should be considering out of all that process we've really tried to distill it down five what we call our five design aspirations these are the five two metrics of things that we're trying to accomplish this project to achieve the vision and they really center around the idea of adventurous learning and how we can develop a design concept to support the idea of health and wellness and developing designs and Landscapes this is working Wellness indoor outdoor connectivity which is really key to some of this Outdoor Learning opportunities that we've been talking about Community impact we think it's incredibly important for these neighborhood schools of community impact and support all right lastly the condition of stewardship and sustainability how can the school become a role model for sustainability our kids are learning in the education so this is behind we've been working on it 7th Street mine and then the new Soul here the intent is to develop a parent drop-off for parking along Osborne creating points on the corners for neighborhood entry into the site Focus is probably going to have to unfold in phases the initial really focused on what we call Zone a that's the area of Osborne up to about the mid sites includes and really critical site improvements that are connected to people and as grants and other funds I'm available called The Outdoor Learning lab and that's really the school preschool is designed around this Outdoor Learning lab and that includes a series of classroom lab spaces Gathering spaces different scales that really allow classrooms to be in or outdoor and to have students we all adjacent to the media East ER we're developing a what we call the wetlands Garden rainwater harvesting and other strategies to bring water in and creating a small island repairing area but again creates a small Wetland opportunity there that's really kind of a Gateway in the community there you know like comparison do we want but create a wedding so there's a very and we've done a number of wetlands and other facilities around the region we've done we designed the real Audubon Center and Liberty Wildlife Center called half Wetlands on that so there's a process you utilize for moving the water and recirculating and filtering it so it's an it's a natural process but it's also a process of keeping the water moving which allows you to kind of keep the kind of bacteria growth and other uh things out of the water so they're in the process and that's all um also adjacent uh to the new school we're developing an area that's uh that's all garden and Outdoor Company area immediately adjacent indoor diamonds uh so we have raised garden heads that be used by the kids um we have a rain water system that's capturing rain water off the roof that competed your vegetable garden and then covered outdoor dining that is just east of that mosquitoes are all kept down by the water movement that's part of the process of moving the water in the filtration process so that is a part of the health of the Wetland itself is the ability to do that there's also native uh aquatic species you can introduce the insects down uh um so you will have you will have some sort of makeup water that's interconnected into it um and that throughout the course of the year you have to have some sort of makeup water or you will not make it through the season particularly the season that we're in now where you can go for three months without rainfall the balance of the Year whenever you're getting more rainfall um and you're able to kind of deal with some rain water Harvest and it starts to balance some of that at in terms of the size of the Wetland this is actually pretty modest size uh fortified which which is relatively small compared to other weapons for example that we were talking about at the Audubon Center or Liberty Wildlife those were up to about 20 000 square feet this is about a quarter of that size it ranges in depth along the edges I mean it's uh a foot deep down to probably about 14 feet deep at the deepest foreign standpoint maybe if we go through the entire presentation and then we have a q a discussion at the end if that's okay because there's quite a bit of material to go through um so some of the other areas the landscape areas we're developing uh is a pollinator Garden that is located adjacent uh to the outdoor dining area as well uh that'll have a tractor plants that will attract butterflies and hummingbirds and other types of Wildlife species and then we're developing along the uh experience side area it's called a good nature Play Zone and that'll have a more native Spirit landscape Zone uh interpolated experiences and the types of the ability to integrate play equipment and natural play elements in other than being it's reference imagery showed some of those kinds of natural play areas we're also utilizing there are some very nice mature existing trees on the campus which we're protecting its place uh reducing one of the largest of those trees uh designing a treehouse structure that would work around them examples of types of tree houses that you can build platforms you can build around existing trees and then we do have a multi-use field Court field it would be sized to be able to accommodate soccer and softball and then to the far north part of the site working as developing a Community Gardens and Orchard area and then in terms of water harvesting strategies we've been looking at trying to look at this site full list and how we can reduce the overall water consumption on the site from an irrigation and Landscape so this diagram shows some of the strategies we're utilizing for rainwater harvesting the bio swells and Rain Gardens that feed into different landscape zones as well as the Wetland um and then reduces the amount of area where we're utilized flood irrigation is really being limited just to the multi-use sport field at this point and based on our calculations it's about 58 reduction in our annual water consumption landscape on the site okay eyeballs and then we're also looking at renewable energy and bringing that into the design we're actually shading outboard multi-sport Court they uh TV array shading that tone and producing renewable energy from school and then some of the floor plans for the new school ground level plan uh where we have the main entry this is facing towards Osborne the leadership area with the media center the Wetland garden and then we have Internet lab classrooms Courtyard and then on the north we have the indoor dining outdoor dining Sport Court um the pollinator Garden and on the second level we have additional learning Labs on three sides that open up to a view down into the uh outdoor party and sustainability and with that I'd like to take you on a quick slide through tour of the proposed design and this tour takes about seven to eight minutes Supply get a better sense of the project with this hopefully so that starting on the corner of 28th and Osborne is swinging around 27th and Osborne and then we'll come down to one of those neighborhood entry points uh and train it into the site so this is the corner North at east corner of Oxford and 27th uh trying to create a neighborhood entry into the school some of the BIOS Trails on sides of course it creates against the file spells and rainwater harvesting that we're using here then approaching the main entry into the school I'll swing around in the front doors reception area with the view out into the learning Courtyard to the north and then as we moved into some of the learning lab classroom areas we have a Zone here that's a collaboration Zone with a learning scare that connects between the different levels a small courtyard here on south side and then a the learning scare with the courtyard on the side that's the main learning Courtyard this learning scare can be used as an Amphitheater and we'll have video wall on the on the move up the stairs views out there with actually collaboration area along that with us there on the south actual daylighting coming in from the north so we can utilize as much natural daylight is possible in the space to really try and lighten that up that's correct yeah and they have both yes they do and then this is going to uh an outdoor covered area that's looking the learning Courtyard we do have an outdoor Courtyard that has used to the north so this is the roof Courtyard area immediately adjacent to the art lab reviews to classical Peak to the north we'll move down the stairs apologize it's a little dark with all these lights on in here this would be better if we turned off all the lights um and then moving down to the uh Courtyard level s of outdoor Gathering spaces within the courtyard to give you different different zones for students to be able to uh work there is multi-use sport court and that's immediately introducing to the indoor dining area and to the left we have the dining area as a canopy over it and the multi-use sport fields to the right and then these are the raised garden beds uh here in front with a rainwater systems and out onto the multi-use sports field view back the southeast TV array canopies were killed I'll swing around pollinator Garden has a pathway that goes through that as well as some different Gathering areas and then we come in one last time through the courtyard sport court and that's the indoor dining there uh straight across and it has a little updoors open up thanks for coming through here the learning Courtyard class for both levels and we have one last loop back out around the uh the entrance into the band room there sure in his head and this is the area between the new school and little big mines the media center that's directly in front of us and then the Wetland Courtyard to the uh east of that the Wetland Courtyard um it goes back up you know so that's kind of an overview of the design in terms of what to expect in terms of next steps um we have um as Jay was mentioning at the beginning coming up we're working with the Chase building team currently on Final pricing to present uh pricing for a guaranteed maximum price uh the governing board for review and approvals if that is approved and construction would begin this summer of 2023 and then over the coming year we'd be providing Community updates as well as updates to the governing board with the attempted school would be complete uh in summer of 24 ready for school to open in August of 2024.

two we have Dr me Dr ceiling Dr I mean Mr Wilson Kevin with us tonight working on it working on it Michelle community members I'm sorry um and I'm just gonna go right over and hand this over to Mike and start this agenda for the evening it looks like we've got four items starting with kindergarten transition right that's right so I'll just pull up the agenda here so everybody can see uh pretty straightforward uh we'll start talking a little bit about K transition and meet a little lead off with that um and then she'll segue right into our ongoing engagement and Outreach opportunities superintendent Wilson will jump in for that um and I'll talk a little bit about Collective impact and give an update on some upcoming dates we have and then last uh we'll talk a little bit about this was an ongoing uh item from our previous meeting uh the role in the charge of the community relations committee um I think it might be a good idea to just sort of get this conversation started and then um you know maybe give ourselves a little bit of homework to do uh over the summer and then this is probably a great way to start off in our August or September meeting of next year um so we can uh really just you know set set the course for for next year so um I'll throw to Anne for number one kindergarten transition great thanks hello how are you good to see everybody tonight so we are in the midst of planning a series of kindergarten transition workshops uh the first one is next week and this is with in-house or in-house with our School Readiness families that have requested more information about kindergarten we then what we'd like to do is build it out to a series of two or three over the summer where it's a two-part event um in on the evenings maybe we'll try to pull a Saturday one off a little bit longer if we can um but the first part would be with a kindergarten bilingual kindergarten teacher that can speak to the families we would um break it up by language spoken for them to ask their questions specifically about kindergarten what does kindergarten look like what what are the expectations of my children or my child um you know do they get snack who takes them to the bathroom all of those different types of things um the second part of what we're proposing is then a um abbreviated new promise program and I know we've spoken about the new promise program but we really are refocusing that program to really what kindergarten parents need they don't need to um here at this point in their child's schooling about Naviance and things at the high school and so in the work that we've done with over I think we're 1200 if not more right now uh new promised families or families who have gone through new promise they really want to age specific and so what I'm proposing from my office is that we offer two or three of these to either two evenings in um length one to cover with the bilingual kindergarten teachers and then uh continue to break them into groups by English Spanish and Portuguese to um hear about the new promise program um I think this will set families up well for understanding their responsibilities um but even more so it gives us a chance to be able to build a relationship with them right from the get-go we've started that already when they've come to Central registration whether it be the testers that are doing that the registrars or our Community Connector is connecting them to the welcome packet into our schools but it's another level that we're able to connect with parents on a small group or even you know one to Thirty group for parents to be able to um feel comfortable when their child starts um kindergarten so that that is what I'm looking at um you know what is your role in it or what would the committee's role in this be I would love to see that if we have them in person that board of ed members be there even on Zoom that um people from this committee and from the full board have an opportunity to be there I think it's really really important for families to get to know um the Board of Ed and their role because that is something we talk about a new promise and so um that would be your role as well as helping to advertise it and encourage families um to come out for it so that's what I have around uh kindergarten transition great question Al anybody Luisa okay please please Kate question Dr Mead thank you for the view um are we we're still doing the re-entry I know that this really falls under um Kelly's domain we're still doing that early entry for kindergarten where kids are coming in for that you know during that two or three day period prior to the start of school um to give them the concentrated one-on-one experience um so I just wanted to confirm that is that right I believe this is in addition to this yes um Mike or Kevin maybe you can address that a little bit further um Kate I just want to clarify your ask are you talking about the transition we started last year where we had they were kind of coming in slowly so that they're not all and at the same time as the rest of the school yes yes I just want to confirm we're still doing that so this would be like an additional sort of like welcoming families in embracing new families that are coming into the district to try to give them some of these tools absolutely this is over and above um similar to some of the some of Anne's other programming and it sounds like she's focusing it specifically on incoming families to the district uh to make sure that they understand how to navigate the district know who the board members are know who the administration is um and it's really about just understanding how to navigate the school system and how we can how we can support and and serve them really excellent okay thank you so much thank you and what we're proposing here is in addition to our monthly new promise program that's drawn between 20 and 40 families um every month that are new to the district um you know enrolling their children right now in our schools so we do that once a month and that's well attended as well is that through a grant that we would be doing this are we finding that we weren't you know uh reaching enough parents for that event um you know at the beginning of the year because I think we changed our calendar and stuff to kind of coordinate and accommodate that so are you saying that we're in need of like significant where you would have three or four right two or three four um 20 or 30 group sessions I'm going to call it um did you feel that that's needed for the kindergarten transition or the new promise program for the kindergarten transition I thought this new promised program was kind of going to try to work in conjunction yes yes what a session would be would be um the first part of it the first night because the length of these families you know lose interest or just it's too much information to absorb to take the kindergarten transition um workshop and put it with new promise it's it's over it's information overload and so our families have asked that we do a kindergarten transition workshop with a kindergarten teacher because then they get to see an actual classroom teacher talk about what happens during the day and then the new promise program um and this will be done um in evenings we'll probably run a daytime one perhaps a weekend one um to be able to accommodate all this um the funding Michelle that you bring up Lindy Corporation was the one that paid for all of the original um putting the new promise program together and working we still have some of that funding left but the new promise program we've really been able to just integrate into um our bigger picture of Family University and the offerings for our families without you know people just adjust their hours okay so in other words is this something that we've considered in our budget is this going to be you know some like in other words the funding for this program you're saying that we've been able to grab from other sources or what was remaining in this yeah I mean right now what happens is the people that are delivering it that are trained in the different languages they just come in later in the day and stay till it's over at 8 30.

the live stream has started all right thank you good afternoon I'd like to call the Surplus property committee meeting to order roll call Richard Brown absent Steve Castro president absent Edward halwa here Vanessa Jones here Johnny Liu present Hector Miranda here Terry man Perez here Sam Perdomo absent Karen roughly absent Lori Ray here thank you and to move on to item 3.1 public comment do we have any public comment Lika do we have any public comments online we have no public comment online thank you we'll move on to um agenda item 4.1 which is approval of the minutes of the Surplus property committee held on April 12 2023 I make a motion okay um we had a motion by Steve Castro I'm Sorry by Ed halva first by Steve Castro decadent by you say your name or sir oh I'm sorry any discussion all in favor hi hi an emotion any opposed no motion carries on to agenda item 5.0 which is discussion and review 5.1 presentation of plotted site map and estimated visibility Improvement costs chart so before we get there I'm just going to go back to the first one for a minute um to item four we also need your signature on um so on the minutes that we just approved and then also on the minutes from the prior meeting that we approved so those the ones from the prior have already been approved by the committee but we didn't get a signature at the time oh okay um so if you can just sign there's there's a there's a line for the chairperson signature on page um four I think of the the last meetings minutes and then five of the prior um so feel free to do that and then we'll take a copy of those before the end of the meeting okay thank you and now we can move on to 5.1 presentation of plotted site map and estimated facility Improvement costs yes so um in your binders you will see that there is a map under um well kind of right after item five um when we had uh were in front of the committee several I think it was at the last meeting actually that you received the request there was a request for a plotted map that shows in color both the existing School sites and then the ones that are being considered by the committee um so that that map is there in your um in your materials uh feel free to reference it I believe it has the um the properties that are in front of the committee in red and then all the other school sites are in Black and then just a nuanced thing this map that you're looking at are the current sites so next year even though Foothill is in Black it's remaining open but not as Foothill remaining open as part of Azusa High School and then if you go all the way to down to the South glass on high school right now but next year it will remain open but as Gladstone Middle School I'm just gonna pause for a minute let everybody have a chance to to find that and take a look and I don't believe I have that I left my binder here and just to clarify for those that couldn't see um there's a there's an attachment there's a packet we put into all the binders that's just the agenda that was posted online and so that's that's what was delivered there thank you okay unless there are any thoughts comments questions about that that map I'll move on to the second thing that's also in your materials um so one of the other questions that we got at the last meeting was about uh you know can we see really rough like estimated costs of what it would take to uh to improve the existing facilities for use as a new as a new you know something right we don't know exactly what that could be um but uh staff and Latasha looked at some of the costs and these are really really rough you know estimated costs as of now by the time any of these improvements were made they would probably cost a bit more than what we see here but the idea is just to give you again you know some rough numbers to see what it would take to get some of these facilities up to par um and do some of the necessary improvements you know for example for it to be used as a community center or um you know some some alternative District use um so here um as we said these are rough estimates and this is based off of us today um but we are constantly working to reconcile um this worksheet and as more information comes together we're updated by case in point um we're realizing we're doing an audit of underground utilities and we have reason to believe that underground utilities was completed at Center but this was prior to the current leadership so we're going through old um documents to ensure that these posts are real our actual costs that we're going to have to realize okay so Natasha we will update the sheet and provide as as we get new information but right now we're pretty confident that Center Middle School did already have underground utilities that means that we would subtract 3.5 million dollars from that total that at the bottom correct question um are the cost figures based on in-house courses school districts yes and some like for technology for most of our sites um we were already doing an assessment of what our technology upgrade needs to be for networking so though some of the um estimates are from actual companies coming out to see and some are just based off of what we're currently work that we're currently doing at another site that's like size that we gave for rejections for you're welcome thank you um I do have a question I'm curious uh with these costs are there any um appraisals of our current sort of land value or property values yes so um we we did do some exploration of the value of the sites as a part of the development review however um because of the sensitivity of that information and the fact that that would be kind of a key negotiation point right with a potential buyer or even you know if we want to lease the site um that's not information that we we you know feel comfortable sharing in this this particular Forum it would certainly be available to board members right when they're making final decisions about you know which sites they want to use certain ways um so we do have access to that information but we just you know want to protect the interests of the district and not making it available uh to the general public yes that that actually makes sense thank you so much I have a question you wouldn't necessarily necessarily sell it for housing or something correct that's right that's right yeah we uh we probably wouldn't do improvements to those sites um I mean it depends on what we were doing with it right so you know for example if we were negotiating a lease right with a non-profit user maybe a part of that negotiation would be we do some upgrades they do some upgrades that that could be a part of a discussion if we were going to sell it though to a developer that was just going to build new homes they they're really seeing value in the land and not in the facility and so there wouldn't be any reason to yeah to do upgrades on those sites it looks like they're all pretty similar doesn't it an upgrade with the exception of center now that you took out that three and a half thank you speaking to Donny's Point um one I can't remember which one one of the schools started an American couple so that Ellington Mountain so um okay well that has wondering if there were there was noticeable difference uh a little different and just uh just to be clear it's Mountain View Elementary School and the Sierra adult education center uh that's also closed right now although we are currently leasing a portion of the old Sierra adult school property so we are in a short-term lease because we knew that we were going to start and begin this process and we didn't want to get into any long-term commitments thank you are there any additional thoughts or comments on the the map or the chart before we move forward okay hearing none I think we'll think we'll move forward and now we'll move on to 5.3 review of initial graph of midi report and discussion of structure content and Drug I think we're on 5.2 yeah uh 5.2 not quite there almost there sorry presentation uh 5.2 presentation of Board of Education feedback on potential site uses and District meet excellent thank you um so we we wanted to bring back to you all so you know we have said throughout this process that it's going to be a communication kind of a back and forth with the board right they're going to receive this information before the 7-Eleven um receives that same information and then um they the uh the board had expressed a desire to to you know have another opportunity to kind of provide additional feedback for the 7-Eleven about potential uses of the sites or just you know kind of in general their their thoughts and concerns about the Surplus process um for your consideration and so they have the opportunity to do that I'm at the board meeting on five nine um and I've taken some some notes about the general thoughts that were shared by each of the board members and I'd like to share those with you here as well just to kind of help and you can take them into consideration in your thoughts and and your development of recommendations um so generally there was some concern about you know wanting to make sure that the schools have enough parking and especially handicapped parking um I think this was a concern for uh particularly about Sierra High School you know the street is busy and sometimes it can be hard to find parking near there um that was a thought expressed by one of the board members and so just wanting to make sure that kind of the decisions made keep in mind you know some more uh like practical things like parking um also there was you know definitely interest from a number of the board members about a community center kind of a central center right for um services that could be shared by community members and District members lots of interest in potentially having that be you know partnership with the city or some other non-profit or you know other governmental entity um there were some additional thoughts about wanting that to be in an equitable place maybe a central location there weren't any specific ideas a lot of the board members said you know we don't want to speak to exact locations quite yet but just these you know bigger Concepts about equity and having them be having this spot be centrally located um some thoughts about you know whether it would make sense for it to be just off the 210 Freeway you know some proximity to that uh that Main you know travel way um there were some additional concerns about um having classrooms or weight rooms I think at Sierra that were crowded um and so again some idea there about potentially uh like breaking off that that program and having a new site that would be able to to you know house um that and you know provide additional room and additional parking um some additional ideas about uh potentially having a field for shared use for athletic activities like soccer or like little league um and this this kind of like emphasis on the district uh providing Green Space for those types of uses uh potentially again in partnership with the city if the city was interested in um you know being a part of that um one of the board members also asked that the committee kind of considers some creative options and and you know bring bring forward kind of a diverse set of ideas for the board so they could kind of dig deeper into some of those those ideas and figure out what's going to work for the district um again some more kind of like creative ideas about the centralized Services Center um uh the other the other item that was expressed is uh potential like hesitancy about sale uh they certainly were not opposed to a sale full out um but they wanted to consider um options like uh selling you know portions of a site if that was something that was desirable um but also this idea that a sale could be really helpful to help fund other projects that we want to do on other sites so kind of a balance right of those two ideas um also the idea that a lease option that could generate some Revenue um would would be a good thing that they also want to consider maybe a partnership with a um you know some other type of like service provider or a club um other other ideas came up like staff housing or property swaps or a Wellness Center um again the idea of the wellness center could be done in combination or in partnership with the healthcare organization so you know lots and lots of creative ideas about potential uses for these sites um some that would generate Revenue in order to help the construction or the uh the Improvement of some facilities and then you know some that would be more Community focused there was also the idea of potentially having a community garden space and then I think another board member mentioned that there may already be a community garden space somewhere that's relatively close so just trying to make sure we're not um you know redoing things that are already there for the community um one of the other items that was mentioned is um again this idea of trying to retain ownership of some of the sites and generate Revenue through a lease um again partnership with other organizations was emphasized again uh centralized spaces um there was one of the parcels uh Slauson which is large and square was just kind of mentioned as one that may have a lot of potential could be split potentially based on its size um and again they were they were really less concerned about kind of identifying a single site and more really just about kind of identifying potential uses that they could that then kind of dig into more you know with all of the information to figure out you know where where did those uses make sense think that pretty much covers the majority I mean there was a lot of you know repeat of some of those ideas by many of the members um the only other item that was mentioned I think is there was some concept of wanting to see kind of a site plan with sizes in Green Space and square footage so the board's definitely interested in you know kind of digging into the individual sites like we saw those individualized Maps when we did the presentation of the development report just to kind of um you know conceptualize what's around it and how big is the space and where are the athletic facilities and where is the where are the buildings um and then there was this final idea about maybe doing a survey of some some of the staff members potentially or just maybe some other way of trying to identify what what other needs are internally for those facilities I think that pretty much covers what we heard from the board on the night is there time for us to sort of collectively brainstorm some of these ideas you know is that now or sure well yeah so we could do that now we could also do it in the in the context of the initial draft of the report I'm certainly happy to entertain it in either location um so yeah you know certainly if you want to discuss some of those ideas and you know throw some things around I think I think now would be an appropriate place yeah for for me um I I love these ideas and I think I think all of us this is the fun part right where we get a chance to really see um what can we do for our city what can we do for Azusa unified to make sure that we are also in the long run you know holding on to properties making sure that we're making money off of them so that we can continue to invest back that those monies back into the deteriorating properties that will need to continue to be maintained you know for as long as the schools are here so I I I personally um would love to this sort of Community Center type thing um really resonates with me um in in looking at the map uh the the the uh the map with the red um overlay you know it it does seem like Sloss in middle school could be a great location for something like that the reason being is it's so close to Memorial Park and you know if we talk about collaborating also with the city on stuff like that I mean I I'm just thinking out of the box but 5th Street I believe oh no Fourth Street is the one that separates Memorial with Lawson I mean that that street might not even be needed anymore you know which I think Bridging the two especially with the way that the um topography goes it's it's intriguing because if if we're if we're talking about a Wellness Center I could imagine um since it starts sloping right from from the north to the South I could imagine and a half underground parking structure I could like oh imagine where Fourth Street is and almost this like raised soccer field idea up on top so where uh they have this at Biola University they have a soccer field on top of a parking structure so you're not paying for the development of this giant parking structure actually and then what you see is grass and I think that again I'm just I'm just thinking out loud that there could be a really great partnership right there you know Memorial Park Slawson um and and a great place to really do all of these you know creative ideas I know last meeting we had mentioned you know cooking type facilities making sure you know we could we could centralize so many of the the the the the necessary programs um right there but again I you know there was a lot of ideas out there but it I think this is the fun part for me at least I'm gonna add to that since you mentioned the game just verified I think what was said was that at spots in that kitchen had been developed or maybe redone recently or something like that can you remind me of what that was and if that is played into this Center Middle School you know the upgrades that you kind of just showed us um if that was something that what needs more information you know needs more upgrades to maintain or to however I think you understand the question I think so I'm going to try my best to answer and if not just let me know um so yes currently at Center um Slauson Middle School we have what's considered our Central Kitchen um it is not the size of a central kitchen but we treat it as our Central Kitchen where we currently cook the meals and disperse to most of our elementary and middle schools because they do not have um that type of kitchen setup um so that's the first um is it large enough no we will still like have a desire we have a dream of a real Central Kitchen but right now that's how we currently treat it as our Central Kitchen he's gonna know we're sorry really quick that we have another member that's joined us yeah that's okay you would just there you go bring it bring it bring it really close to you there okay thank you okay so and with that is that where the district thinks that it should stay or I just as a question should it stay there can it be moved and then so right now until a decision is made we will continue to utilize the kitchen the kitchen is off um is gated off the campus um so it's we still have access to it um we do not have to go on the camp we do not have to enter the campus um right now we the central kitchen is on the back and then in the front is in the middle line so that's how our students currently are receiving meals um until we make a decision on a property we will still utilize the Central Kitchen um but now that we're going to have all our middle schools um students on Gladstone Middle School campus that quick kitchen is equipped to cook so now the Central Kitchen will now only um prepare the meals for our elementary schools one of the one of the uh to use uh Mr Lew's uh phrase of Dreams one of the ideas that we dreamed up if if we could use one of the properties for Sierra High School and Sierra High School is smaller in scale compared to a high school um maybe that could be the location of a Central Kitchen which can then function a lot of different ways number one you're using the same property but number two maybe again in partnership with career Pathways maybe culinary or maybe a work based experience for for students you know those kinds of things um but that's an idea that we kind of throw around I also know last time I I love the idea of finding out that we could subdivide if we were to sell anything which I think is really intriguing right because let's say we take a larger property of the sixth and we're able to find you know a really great Corner subdivide out and sell that I'm I'm I'm wondering again because we have I and I I'm not sure if um if you said this to the whole committee because I think it was afterwards in passing or whatever but but that the school district has unique ability to be able to subdivide could you speak more into that sure yeah so I think we did address this during okay great uh the development um section but I'm I am more than happy to to describe it further so um yeah there there are rules um that will dictate kind of the procedure for how you subdivide land um it's called the subdivision map act but the school district as a public entity has certain um I would say like flexibilities where where the procedure used for them to subdivide a property just looks it looks a little bit different it's a little bit easier depending on your on the jurisdiction um so yes that is that is certainly one of the options the only other thing that I will mention um just practically is you know if we subdivide a site right that's going to impact value right so um so for example if a developer is looking at a site and they're going to build a certain number of units right if we're if we're selling them a smaller portion that that you know could substantially impact the uh the profitability for them right because maybe you know it's not worth it for them if they can only build 10 units it's worth it for them if they can build you know 30 40 and I I'm just pulling those numbers out right I have no idea which which side or you know where that where that like Tipping Point would be um but that's that's something to consider you you know you certainly can subdivide but if the thought is to you know for example like maximize value at one site to use that right to support the construction at another site um it it may not make sense to subdivide that in that same way um really really just depends on the circumstance um along those lines do we have to decide the fate of all six schools so really the I'm glad you asked this actually because it you know goes back to kind of the key goal and responsibilities of the committee right so um ideally yes right the board has said you know we we have given you these sites so that you can kind of help us identify what you don't need to do is identify specifically this site should be sold for this use this site is the community center this site you split it in half you sell this you know what I mean that's we don't need to get into that level of specificity and I would say it probably doesn't make sense to because we don't know land values here there are there are certain components that only the board right is going to know the full picture to be able to make those really specific decisions what the what the committee does need to do is make this kind of big picture determination about Surplus or not Surplus right so when we say it's Surplus to the educational needs of the district really that means you know do we needed to educate like do we need it to to host a a you know particular like K through 12 or you know one particular like educational program now if you set a site with Surplus that doesn't mean that you're saying it shouldn't be used for a community center or it couldn't be used you know for a for a for a central kitchen or even you know to separate out Sierra High School to give it some more space it's really saying you know based on that initial data that we looked at way back when right that based on enrollment and the capacity of these sites they're not absolutely like you may decide they're not absolutely necessary to be able to contain the enrollment that we have so to kind of to kind of summarize their really what the the the uh the committee is asked to do is decide Surplus or not Surplus um and I think when we look at the draft report that's in the next item it might help frame it frame it a little bit too right so you're seeing like like what what is this final document that we send the board going to look like and and what do we need to tell them about the individual sites um the other thing that I'll address about your question is you know technically you could you could not make a decision about a site you could say we you know we we don't feel that we can you know make a determination but I think I think the board's goal is like these came as a group right so that they could have some some flexibility and that you would give a recommendation for each of the sites they're just too for clarity purposes so the recommendation for the the for each site is is it Surplus or is it not Surplus but to your point even though technically you're legally that's not the function of of a 7-Eleven committee the board does want to hear from this group yep if there are specific yeah ideas ideas um like yes this group really recommends and I'm just saying it because this was brought up today a community center or this group really recommends because again I we brought it up Sierra High School to have its own school you know whatever those things may be even though that is and and please correct me if I'm wrong right that's that's above what technically our role is the board is eliciting ideas and dreams and visions of what what these properties might serve at yes I think that's right and I would say that um you know when we get to the next item where we look at the draft report you'll see there are two sections really there are two kind of major like meat sections one is a set of findings and that's really where we look at based on the data that we have and you know enrollment and capacity of sites are the sites um you know should they be considered surplus of educational needs of the district then we go to the recommendations and that's usually where you know you you have more freedom and flexibility even within this form to say here are some ideas of things we think you could do for example we think it would be great if you would use at least you know two of the sites for you know Community benefit purposes or we'd really like you to identify you know one site as a community center so you can build in those those you know kind of creative ideas um while still giving the board the flexibility to to consider all the factors that they have and kind of make final decisions um and we'll talk through some some of those too so that you can you can see kind of what that can look like then I have another question so in everything that you just said for example Mountain View and then here's my question has been empty for how long with no students nothing going on there I know it's been a few years but that's a great example of it hasn't been used the district hasn't used it the community doesn't really say much about it that might be a property to really think about letting go correct to answer your question I believe it's four years in addition for the committee um that is one of the higher upgrade costs on that there look at and just again for full detail Sierra High School the old Sierra High School Adult School would fit in that same timeline as uh Mountain View and that is being leased out though you said right I mean I know it was on a temporary to somebody a portion a portion of it is being leased out yes on a or at least and if there aren't any more questions move on are there any more questions on 5.2 I just wanted based on the plot map uh are we just maintaining one Middle School I think that is correct so um the elementary students will be housed by just one or it will Penn Station right away to high school uh no Elementary will go all the way to fifth grade then after fifth grade all the students will go to one Middle School which is Gladstone High School way at the bottom that'll turn into Gladstone middle school and they'll be there for sixth seventh and eighth grade and then when they finish at Glasgow Middle School for eighth grade then they'll go to Azusa High School for high school so we'll just have one middle that is correct any more discussion okay and we'll move on to 5.3 review of initial draft of committee report and discussion of structure content and drafting okay so um in your materials what I provided is just a really initial draft of kind of what the reports um for uh for the committee can generally look like and what I'll do is I'll just kind of walk through the structure of it to get everyone familiar with you know with what we generally have and then we can certainly open back up for conversation about you know do we do we want to tweak or or change any of the content here to you know better fit what the committee's thinking um so we start with a summary that just kind of explains you know the the dates um that apply to the committee and again the authorization that comes from the education code for all of the things that we do as a part of the committee each of the members is listed here and that the date that they were appointed by the board um we we do a little bit more on page one of describing um you know some of the requirements within the code and how each of you and your characteristics fit this diverse kind of set of of profiles that the code says is is you know very important that we we have a part of the committee then we list out the properties that have been provided for committee review um finally we do a summary on this page of kind of all of the meetings in which the committee has met so that it's really clear for anyone looking here you know as to when when those meetings happened um then we uh we also take a look at um there's there's one particular meeting where we we will have a public hearing we think that will likely be our next meeting and so you'll see that one's called out and the exhibit has the minutes from that meeting um because it is you know a very specific component of what the code requires that the committee do um we uh so then I have summarized in the next paragraph on that page um kind of some of the the pieces of information that were presented to the committee we talk about the presentation from dcg and the feasibility analysis um that there was feedback from The District staff and board about the needs and goals right so we've we've talked about that today and then a little bit before um I've heard from uh from prior committees that they sometimes like to really be thorough about this is the information that we were given to look at and that's what resulted in our recommendation so certainly you know if there are other pieces of um other you know specific references to information that you were given to look at that you want to mention here we can certainly do that um then we get into the meat of the of the report right so we start with the findings and this is where we usually have some discussion about you know whether or not the the all properties or individual properties are needed for the educational the ongoing educational needs of the district um and then we can describe a little bit um you know whether there are a certain number of them that you have you know certain creative uses that you would like to recommend um and then finally we have this this chart that just kind of you know puts into visual what we've said in the findings right so it lists each of the sites and then we kind of give a surplus or not Surplus label um this is uh this is important here um it's probably helpful to share because this report is used in a number of different ways after the committee is finished right so um you know for example if the district were to seek a waiver of the sale of surplus property procedures this is one of the documents that gets submitted with that um and they're they're going to want to see that the property's been you know that there was a recommendation and then that the board actually declared its Surplus um there's also a a process with the Department of Housing and Community Development um where we have certain flexibilities for those sites this this report is also one of the things that they want to see so um might help you to know that this will not just go somewhere and sit it will be looked at by lots of different government agencies over time um so then we move on uh to the committee's recommendations and this is really where I think you have you know great opportunity to again provide those kind of uh creative suggestions for the board um so you know I just kind of you know threw some ideas in here to get the conversation started but in in you know section two for example we talk about the community benefit uses such as a potential student services and meeting Center um other options for re um organization of existing student programs um so you know we can we can certainly throw in some more you know some more ideas there um in section three I made some mention again just to get the conversation started about you know the potential to sell or release some of the sites for Revenue purposes to put that money back into those uh potential Community uses um in in section four I say something about you know the it's the intent of the committee that we you know we'd like to create flexibility for the board we don't want to give them you know particular directives about particular sites it's more here's some good ideas that we'd like you to further explore when you decide you know what to do with the individual sites [Music] um five and six also also have uh like very uh particular reasons for being included um so in section five I talk about should the should the board uh decide to sell or release or otherwise convey um any of the sites that the 7-Eleven um wants them to have flexibility in the method of disposition um right so this goes back to again there's a really stringent process in the Education Code about how properties can be sold or at least or like otherwise conveyed and um the process really focuses on on price just on price and and lots of districts that I've worked with and you know lots of committees feel strongly that other factors should be considered other than just the price right so maybe you have you know various folks that are interested in in you know buying or leasing a property and you you know you want them to to be able to consider those factors outside of price um that's that would uh just this is kind of you know an indication from the committee that you all feel similarly or that you have other considerations in that way that you'd like to communicate to the board um and then finally six is that uh the reference to the waiver process so um when I mentioned before that if the district seeks a waiver um of the stringent process for sale of property um there's this whole application that goes into the state board and they like to see um feedback from the 7 11 about whether this the process of getting a waiver was discussed or contemplated by the committee and essentially like whether the committee thought it was a good idea or a recommended it for the board um so again these are really just very very preliminary ideas out there to kind of help with discussion but um this this part of the report is also a really great place for you to you know give some some creative ideas about the sites feel free to share if any if anyone has anything to to say about the report or you know particular requests I mean I can I can line words out I can add sentences in I am I am ready to go so you just you just let me know I just thought of something else right now um how much does it how much is the district does it cost the district to retain properties such as Mountain View and old Sierra what is the overhead for and and because it could take a year or two for sale or um least even if we decide to retain and lease um what is that price to just have it so um I wouldn't say there's a price but we do have a responsibility to our community to at least for the curb appeal um and we are finding um like for Mountain View for example that we're currently I'm working to um I'm not going to say Ad networking but have the ability to have surveillance so that we can also protect our property from vandalism and vice versa so those will be some costs it will have to but I think that's just given because we want to just we don't want it to just be ran down because that's when people we have reporters or people that start living in it and things like that so um we have a burden of a responsibility to at least do the curb appeal um but beyond that we typically cut the utilities off unless we just have um what do you call um security lights so the motion um um we'll keep if we know we're going to utilize it then we will keep the water going but we will We assess the need and then go from there okay so um I would love to suggest that if there was to be any sale of a property which I personally don't want to see any of our school both sides sold but I definitely want to make sure that we can improve the other sites so I know we have to have money from somewhere I think that's the hardest part right I'm curious about the the grant that we received and would that be able to be used um so for example number one says the property should be declared Surplus to the educational needs of the district so that means can we use the 1.5 towards any of these Surplus properties because they're no longer educational I'm going to assume that you mean the 15.9 okay yes 15.9 okay um although that Grant cannot be used for facility improvements um I'm and I don't know if you know Latasha but I'm sure it could be used for like stuff but not for facility improvements and so by stuff I mean like oh somebody needs a desk or whatever that's possible but I'm not 100 sure um what it can be used for but I definitely know it cannot be used for facility Improvement and I would just to chime in just a little bit to say um it's a strong possibility that it's a no because to apply for the grant we had to submit a budget with it and we had to identify what we were going to spend the funds on right so I'm sorry I was just going to add that I don't so if if what I'm hearing from a part of your question is if we declare a property Surplus does that limit what we can do as far as spending like educational dollars whether it's this particular Grant or maybe other educational dollars that are coming in in my experience um you know I can't speak to every form of money that's coming in and the particular requirements but if the ultimate use of the site is again for some type of a centralized kitchen or it's to re relocate Sierra High School those are still those are still educational uses right and so the the use of that money wouldn't necessarily be limited um the Declaration of surplus is is more saying we don't need it for you know key core like we don't need it to you know to house existing enrollments so um in short to summarize I think I I I wouldn't say don't feel like declaring a property Surplus is going to limit you know what you can do with it also just because the board declares a property Surplus doesn't mean it can't turn around and you know build a brand new school on it so it doesn't mean that like it's there's no point of no return at which they can't go back and say oh actually we really do need this to build a new school not that that's the case that we anticipate here but your your recommendation does not limit it to you know to to being used for those things yeah for me it's it's you can tell I I want to make sure that we have great ideas that we can pay for it so I think one of the things that troubles me the most not just about our school district but it's really there's a lot of surplus properties out there whether it's real estate or or you know commercial Etc that is just being unused and for us it it's it would be great if they were all income makers for us somehow that's what I would want to try to um suggest to the committee because without selling would be my hope because then we can raise funds to maintain our current facilities and also get maybe one great you know thing or two great things right like a community center and then relocate you know the high school that would be my hope but I'm not sure if we wanted to go around and say that I just know I the only thing that I underlined was sold for number three because I just really would hate to see any of the property sold at all that if we don't sell then I need to see or I don't need to see I would love to see how the school board is going to pay for all of these great improvements because you know we're not gonna like like you showed us enrollment is going down and so we're not getting more money from anywhere else usually so we have to generate our own I think the other thing to think about right is the various methods and kind of how the income comes in right so a sale you know for the most part you get one big lump sum right that could you know be that upstart cost for facility Improvement or getting something off the you know um off the ground whereas you know and again there you know there are there are varieties in all of these structures but with the lease it's normally small you know small payments over time right so that could be enough to kind of keep something going but may not be that big upstart that you would need to get something operational one question um where is the social unified as far as uh charter schools do we even have one in our statistics do we even support the idea or where do we stand for charter school we we currently do not have any authorized charters in Azusa oh I mean it's good to offer these facilities if we have at least some Charters but we don't have even one right we do not have I just want to speak to what John was saying about not selling properties I think the struggle that the district has had to even lease some of the old Sierra campus shows us that it might be very very difficult to find somebody or a group or an organization or even the district itself to to fund keeping those properties open um I'm I'm I teach at Ellington school which is way down at the bottom and it's this cozy little neighborhood um with people who don't move out of it and so if it if it were to be sold for single-family housing it would just fit right in with the current area a lot of parents have come to me and said we would love to have single-family housing or a park now I know they have Valleydale Park not too far up the street but um parents and those who live in the area are very concerned about what would happen to that and and they think the ones that have spoken to me that that single-family housing would be great so I can understand selling that property and if you look at the map I mean it's just way so far down south um from everything else related to The District so it was brought up in the initial meeting in public comment I was looking for the gentleman's name with the school from Glendora um is that something that the board talked about I know he spoke at that one of the the board meeting that I saw as well and repeated the same information um is that something that the board heard talked about like isn't that the leasing option in addition to that um upgrade cost would that if you lease out that property is that something the district has to then go is there like a minimum standard of okay but you have to put all these upgrade bins anyway even though it's going to generate income right so you could speak to that so there's no so there's no set standard as far as what we would have to do to lease it um that comes with the lease agreement um sometimes it's upgrades at least as is or we can have a shared lease agreement as far as who's going to do a pool um we could pull the cost for utilities or change the electrical panel and vice versa um as far as the lease request that was currently and presented to us um until we complete the 7-Eleven process we're not actually going to start any long-term lease or short-term lease until we make a decision so that way the board education could decide what they want to do with the properties and then give us Direction on how we're going to proceed the only other thing that I think I remember from that request is it was like a really short-term need it was like they needed in it within 60 days or like 90 days or something so I just don't know what their what their needs are still and and thank you for for answering that I just asked that because we don't know and I don't know if anybody's reached out and said hey is that still a thing or in six months are you still gonna need something in addition is that then a five year lease is that a 10-year as um you mentioned that the leasing can be kind of wish to watch right thanks I also love the idea of a community center since we're we've got that Grant that can do so much for our community um I wouldn't know where to house it though because it looks like our our school district was wide and now it it's getting long and narrow so to find you know if you put it up at Slauson school then what about all these people at Murray and things like that um so maybe we need to split that a little bit maybe have a northern and southern Center but with the community schools program that we're going to be implementing and it's something so new and exciting that uh I'd like to really um see that happening in a central location as well as a little bit we talked about having some things that individual site do but I think it's real important for our community to feel like they have somewhere where they can go and get the support that they need I want to add to that just because you mentioned stocking sausages now have their Youth and Family Center there in the north um rec room and so they have a full schedule already so through that that there is something there already um that is by Parks and Rec and it would be but I like that idea of putting it a little more Southern as um within our community um if we were to sell as well I just wanted to point out I know that from a real a real estate perspective let's say you know commercial use or whatever um the proximity to the freeway is oftentimes really you know attractive so you know again just without having any experience at all just this idea that maybe Mountain View or the old Sarah adult education you know um even again the ones right off of the main street right like Center Middle um those might be more attractive for commercial mixed-use units because it's so close to the freeway um or or Main Street and then and and to Echo you know I especially if the residents around Ellington want it to become you know you know a park or or houses then yeah that makes absolute sense because it it is kind of an island on its own right so so I'm just saying I'm not I I just don't want us to like go over property unless if we have to right so if we can generate funds any other way but clearly we've been trying to lease even Mountain View for four years or you know maybe you could speak into that but and it and there's been no bites so the worst is that we're holding on to these properties and then they're just dilapidated and then then eventually No One's Gonna want to lease it you know so I think time would be ticking in in that way the only other thing that I wanted to mention just to kind of get the wheels turning for you all too is there's so there is this option in the Education Code that allows for a property exchange where you can take you take an alternative property of like relatively similar value and there's this kind of uh it's literally like a swap idea where you essentially you know switch ownership of those properties um some districts have done that well I can't say that I have been a part of one that I've seen happen exactly yet but it's definitely being thought about where um they've considered for example uh like taking ownership of like a strip mall for lack of a better description and making kind of one of the locations their Central Kitchen and one of the locations some other District use um you also could exchange for a property that generates you know ongoing Revenue right so so depending and it's all going to depend on your on on making sure they're of comparable value um so yeah sorry go ahead no I was just saying interesting because you know how we learned that so many of these properties are in different cities and different jurisdictions I'm curious does Glendora want to swap with us I mean I I don't know glendora's map I don't know you know but I'm just saying it's interesting um that there are these opportunities to to really think through what would be and then in the end for me it would be making sure that we can make money for our school districts so that we preserve and increase our programs right I mean that's I think that what we all want I just know that once we sell it it just is gone right but we might need to which is so sad you know so yeah the other thing to think about right is the is the the ongoing costs and kind of Staff time of managing an investment property right so one of the things I hear a lot from districts is we we have enough on our plates to educate all these kids and provide all these you know additional community services for example um you know it takes a substantial amount of time for a staff member to you know make sure we're we're getting rent checks okay wait you know someone's in default okay we you know for landlords we have to evict on occasion right all of those things that um you know even even like larger public entities right like cities and Counties have staff members that are dealing with real estate you know there's no there's no like real estate director at the district right that's that's doing those functions so it doesn't mean it's impossible it's just you know another main responsibility that you know the district would take on have like the underscore that point you know with the Surplus properties they've taken back uh oftentimes they make a mistake kind of and it's not their benefit more management intensive cost intensive and it's more beneficial if it was sold um the other point is anyone identify what entities or who would be willing to lease these properties as they are I mean that one property has been on the market for a year sorry so just to clarify so we currently do not have any properties that have been up for at least meaning we've been advertising for leasing we've just had two properties vacant um for the last four years okay thank you sir you're welcome and I would just say in in in general right the the pool of organizations that are looking for you know Surplus School properties to to use the actual facilities is a is a relatively small group sometimes you know it's like churches or um you know like religious organizations other types of educational groups right that are providing services or like non-profits um other public entities often you know can can make those facilities work but um outside of that a majority of the transactions I've seen are you know um for-profit folks that are looking for the for the land value as opposed to the you know the value of the facilities themselves yeah and it may not generate that but brand to make it feasible delete and unfortunate yes that's that's what I was wondering too right because we have to make sure that we are staying above the cost to maintain the school is a million dollars and our lease is eight hundred thousand you know where that's not attractive so I think that's why I wanted to be specific to say I don't want to sell any property but are we gonna like stay ahead and it and having it vacant and staying there I mean that that's not helpful either so I think what's exciting is or I'm curious if we decided to lease them all I'm just saying but would we create a whole department that could help with the leases would that be jobs that would be created are we are we planning to go with this um dcg like would they would they advise us through that process like I'm just curious like who's our realtor like who who's the one that's going to be marketing our schools um because I would love to hear from them to be like oh actually if you want to leave like could you imagine if if they had oh yeah there's a list of you know here's the pool it's very selective there's only five um you know but if we could let's say lease to I have no idea I'm just you know Kaiser or something you know who just like I I want to lease this and make it into a hospital I'm just thinking uh you know totally out of the box that could be a huge Revenue generator that they could I mean I'm just saying potentially we're there they would build you know build these facilities we would still own it they would pay us you know Etc so I think in that way I I just want to make sure that we are able to know our full options because like again I mentioned Kaiser and again it might not even be a thing that could happen but suddenly it's like oh Kaiser Azusa wow and it's in one of our school properties and maybe that's something that can we recommend if we sell we would like you to sell it to you know this type of entity I don't know I'm just it's super nuanced I I we don't have to explore all those things but I'm just curious yeah I mean I can speak to a couple of those things I don't I don't want to necessarily speak to what the Staffing at the district would look like if we leased all those sites I I can say from um some past experience it's it's very rare for a district to add additional staff just to manage those things because of because of the cost of that right and and you know if you think about the again the the amount of money that's coming in to cover that cost and all of the other things like usually I've seen it it you know falls on existing staff to make that a part of you know what they're responsible for so that's that's again you know part of the challenge is adding additional responsibilities to folks that already have you know lots to do um with regard to who who would the broker be or how would we you know Market or solicit these sites um we we certainly have the option to go with dcg the board would would really be kind of making a decision about you know who the broker would be for the site um it's very common for districts to work with Brokers to help solicit you know interest there I would say they're one of their main functions right is to help you know generate those ideas and potential uses on the um the offers right they you know they have all the um all the connections with those types of groups that you know would would potentially have interest having said that you know they they it's almost a little bit too preliminary right for them to start going out to solicit information even for example like when I talk to developers on occasion About Properties they're so hesitant to do you know underwriting or provide numbers or or even express particular interest in a property until they know that it's at least been declared Surplus right like we're I mean we're so early on in this whole process with these properties that many are are very hesitant to even you know even spend you know time and money showing interest or exploring potential uses which is why you know we kind of get over this hurdle and then we you know we think about really really you know soliciting interest and figuring out what the what the precise uses are um you know I will say and this is a different community that I'm you know that I'm that I'm speaking to at this example but you know there are it's not uncommon to see you know committees say or or the board even to say you know we we want a community garden we want a non-profit use you know bring bring the interest and then we have that board meeting and there's there's there's there's no one you know that can bring the the funds or the the structure to make that great you know Community benefit happen so sadly you know all the ideas are there but you have to have that person that's willing to step forward and have the money and the time and the organization to do it um I know there were so many points that you that you touched on but if there's anything else I can speak to no that it's great and again I think you know I I don't I don't want to keep putting out ideas because I know that we're just giving a general sort of recommendation but if there were to be um more sort of nuanced things for the board to sort of I think consider I I would love to hear from other people as well but just these are some of those ideas generally that you know I've been feeling but also hearing from from the community and I think the last one is I um alpali Pomona does a really cool um it's like the Cal Poly faculty and staff Foundation or something where they do their own um housing specifically available for faculty and staff to purchase and then so when they sell that house um it has to be sold to another faculty and staff it's it's something like that and then and then and then the monies is then so anyway somehow cop you know Cal Poly does a really cool program in which if you are a faculty staff there you can have homeownership and again but it somehow benefits still the school Etc so I would love you know for us to maybe explore to see what is what are they doing at Cal Poly Pomona and what is this Foundation that they've started um because again getting our teachers to be able to live in Azusa would be really neat and again somehow they made it so when you sell and you're ready to let's say upgrade to a house off you know not part of Cal Poly um they somehow still get like it's win-win all around where the the owners still get some Equity to go on to their next home they were able to get their first home purchased and then and then now the next faculty and staff were able to then buy into that property so I think something really exciting like that could be cool but I also don't yeah I'm glad to hear Cal Poly is successful because I think Stanford is has the same type of program and um I'd have to go back and research but there are a lot of issues with that um who rents the housing and what what rate and new benefit and I believe it and been in the news recently also to address your idea about these things to some entities such as Pfizer well sure giving a giving someone a ground leak are you retain the ownership will probably be the most expeditious or straightforward and efficient and probably the least costly uh but then again you're you're saying you're gonna lease them the land and they're gonna have the right to rape it and redevelop so then you have to go and go through the the idea the process of okay do I we want this is it going to be beneficial and is advisor for example going to pay Market rent for your land and is the land still the rent for the for some of these sites may not be overly sufficient or anything um and just on an anecdotal note uh one thing that pushed me out of teaching full-time back in 1979 uh locking out I was teaching third grade at La Canada um and they offered early retirement and other other inducements for people uh believe as they were suffering the same thing in the late 70s enrollment went down they they sold one of the elementary schools the JPL uh as far as I know they didn't entertain leasing it in the last time I buy that area I think JPL kept structure oh and JPL right there it was the oh I don't know one by Oak Park I know where it is I can visualize it but [Music] um that has worked out well for locking on but again that's anecdotal and that actually so I think just to just to kind of summarize right because my goal will be to to make edits to the content of the report so that when I bring it back to you next meeting it you know kind of reflects what I'm hearing tonight um so what I'm hearing is that there's there's there's definitely some some interest in the board using at least a few of the sites for um for a community benefit purpose right we like the community center idea is what I'm hearing um also that you know we're we're still open even though there's some you know potential hesitant hesitancy about a sale there's some uncertainty about whether a lease would be you know it would be profitable or would have a good like Revenue stream for the district there's still some interest in using some of the of the parcels to help to generate money that we can put back into the uses on other Parcels right so even just a recommendation that broad right is still you know providing direction for the board um so I can certainly kind of help to tweak some of the of the language that's here to express that um you know we can even be more specific and say that you know there's there's a concern by the by the by the committee or there's um kind of a like emphasis on ongoing like ownership of valuable assets right so to the extent that it makes sense to continue to own land because they're going to continue to increase in value right that goes to the hesitancy about sale um but you know doesn't doesn't you know it is is not so restrictive that we say we don't want you to sell any of the properties we just say you know we'd like you to think you know a lot about the value of of maintaining land as an asset we'd like you to think about you know what are the options for producing revenue from some of these sites that we can put back into Community uses um we I guess you know I heard some really creative options about um you know other I guess wanting to consider I mean we could even say right because of what I'm hearing is we we want to look at sites that are approximate to existing you know Park and City uses to the extent that those may be good locations for for these you know Community uses um we could we could certainly mention that to give them some direction as to which sites you know we're kind of indicating maybe maybe good ones for you know for the community benefit use um any other kind of broad topics that I'm not pulling out you know feel free to you know to kind of chime in and I'll help draft language that that really kind of addresses those I would like also to consider not just from the school district perspective but as a resident living down the street from Mountain View having that be empty considering the neighborhood it is right off the Vernon exit a little dangerous um but it is now empty and sounds like maybe needs some security things like that that if that has been empty vacant um what do the surrounding people that who live there what are they seeing um and and remembering that if we do try to sell it or anything it could still be there for a while empty um and even though you may want to retain that would it be better to sell that property and make residential because they would be better for that actual neighborhood um and not just with Mountain View but um I would imagine well the old Sears right across from from a park so I'm also thinking none of these locations from what I remember can be anything other than residential in the grand scheme of things so there isn't the potential to put a mini mart up or anything like that it's either stay as it is or become residential if I remember correctly I think Mountain View has the potential for industrial on the easterly side of I think it was all kind of dependent on you know what the jurisdictions would approve right so when we go to the concept of like rezoning and like General plan amendments um it sounded like the feedback really from from those jurisdictions was again you know really pushing housing because of that that like needs allocation right that they uh the arena allocation that they're really really pushing to meet um so it's not to say that it would be completely impossible it's just you would have to have all of the right uh like political pieces in place for the jurisdiction to say yeah we're going to go completely outside of what we've said that you know that our our plan is for these sites and allow this alternative use um another thing to think about is just you know right now generally uh commercial and Industrial uses are are not super popular right because of the changing of the world after covid you know some of those some of that real estate is not as valuable or as in not being looked at in the same way that it that it was um in other years before Sarah to uh chairperson's uh point and to what you said that is not incumbent on the district correct so the district cannot say we're going to sell this property but only to to an entity that's going to build a museum because that that although we can say all we can say that all we want the the power really lies on the jurisdiction to say well thank you but no the zoning is for residential and I think I heard I don't know if it was here in the board meeting that it would be incumbent on the on on the the developer who has the interest and they're they're not going to show an interest in the property until they know pretty close that that the zoning is going to fit what they what they are are going for and so it's not it's not I mean although the district can say that um again we don't have any power or control over that is that correct yeah that's right so um to kind of hit on a couple of those things I think I think we talked about the information from dcg and I I forget if it was in this forum or in front of the board but um usually what we see when we're doing a developer transaction is that they have super super long escrow periods because they need to have certainty about the zoning and the entitlements related to the site before they're they're willing to pay for it and so they're you know during that 18 to like 24 month um you know time they they're they're getting the property rezoned essentially so that they they know with certainty that they're going to have that um that done before they take full ownership of the site and and that in fact um having that process be completed as a condition to them having to buy the property so if it doesn't happen they don't have to buy it um the other piece is I mean yes you know you can certainly we can put all types of restrictions into into a into a report into even a purchase and sale agreement but ultimately unless there's a restrictive covenant that's recorded against the property that you know it makes it even more restrictive um what could happen is if you put way too many restrictions on it you I mean you end up having a site that's that's not usable right because because the city says okay well this um we can't or won't you know Zone it for that use and so you you know you kind of like come up against this this where you may have a site just sit right because you said Well it has to be used for this and we you know want it to be zoned for this the the city says there's no way we're going to let you do that and then you know there's not much that can be do you're at a stalemate at that point um so I've even seen for example you know we've had boards that feel really strongly about well sell it for development but it has to have a certain number of of like Acres of green space or I mean even those types of restrictions they they so limit what a potential buyer is is willing to offer right so even if they they still want the property it's at a three million dollar discount because of the Restriction um or you know I the other thing that I that I often talk to to you know staff or boards about is does the district or the committee really want to take take the position of the city planning agency right like that's really their role in all of this is is deciding what cities look like and how things are are you know zoned and organized and so to kind of put ourselves in that place you know sometimes create more conflict than it does really benefit but I think to summarize what I heard from you in really really general terms that I can put into the report is um you know we we want the board to consider input from the communities that are surrounding these schools when they're deciding what the potential uses of them would be and even how to and um kind of what what way they may seek to get you know like revenue from those sites I'm also hearing an emphasis on may not be great to just let them sit like this for a long period of time let's find some way that they can be productive so that that has a benefit for the surrounding communities those are definitely Concepts we can you know we can incorporate in the report I would also consider location for the Community Center idea right off Mountain View just as an example there's nothing there's there's not a gas station there's not a restaurant there's nothing there that would draw people in like if you wanted meetings and things like so to consider something more like Powell that is across from a view in that little Center there there's in and out there's all those restaurants even pretty walking distance thinking as a business perspective because a community center needs to be kind of central to a lot of things right versus Ellington on an island right where there's it's just a bunch of homes so um if the committee would consider those those um those ideas as well I know that it was and it was brought up location to the freeway with Ellington pretty far um is it possible to provide potential estimates on what leases would be if we were to lease them out versus cost of maintenance I guess I wouldn't understand how to provide that not knowing who's going to lease right um we there is a standard square footage that um but that would always be negotiable right between each person so so even a range I'm just curious I I don't know if we but in my mind if we see the numbers next meeting and clearly the leases are not going to carry any of these costs to maintain you know at that point maybe the committee would then wrongly suggest selling you know um it's like if you have a house for rent and you know it's not even going to make the mortgage right so if it's not even going to make the mortgage then we need to think of ways to either we're going to increase rent or we're going to sell and it just feels like if we if I saw those numbers at least it would it would feel at least better like hey we wanted to keep it but we just couldn't we're losing money every you know so we're only suggesting selling because we that was like the last you know option it it just is good data to have in my mind that data is very difficult to obtain based on my carrying the 42 years of raising commercial crop especially for a special year you're considering keeping the structures the improvements and releasing an improved prop that's a very specific and that's going to be a very small market for buyer pool less equal and if we can't get the projected then maybe at least we have the current property for lease or that's being leased love to know kind of how much they're paying and you know what that looked like so I can say I'm poor Ro police um it was agreed to give a discount can we receive um services from the ROP so I I'm I can give those rates but it's not equip us um I'm gonna say a fair assessment um because we um there was an agreement to give them a discounted rate because we are part of the ROP JP as well so we benefited from their services but then what would have been the rate if we didn't give them the discount uh give me one second I could pull that up yeah and and again I'm just I just wanted to see this frame of reference I understand like for example commercial properties they're like oh it's two dollars a square foot I mean we know that it's there's a range right but I'm just curious what that range is because what if it's I don't know five dollars I have no idea what the the the price per square footage is I've never tried to lease a school before so I I think also what are again from a real estate perspective you look at the comps and you see well Glendora just leased out their used facility for four dollars a square foot you know so I'm curious like what what has that been in the last year if or two or however far we have to go because if you're like to be honest there's like six schools near us that are all vacant I mean not our sick schools but you know uh six schools that are vacant and none of them are being leased then we kind of know that we're oh great six more schools are up for lease that's not really helpful you know so I think that data would be really good to have in suggesting whether or not we hold on to them or or we sell them so currently the ROP lease is at 75 cents per square foot what terms are all right well net modified routes poster um no so um they provide their own maintenance and then we provide any Services we build them back for the services that we have to provide but we keep it maintain the ground in my experience with with transaction funding transactions uh you don't put a value on them based on please right basically missed by sale you're looking to use the facilities lease facility uh it's going to be difficult to get up a really good accurate idea of what the fair market rent would be it doesn't preclude you from trying but that's going to be an obstacle again they're most they're the transactions for schools are for sale they're not really I guess the other thing I'm thinking about kind of how we would find this information what I'm what I'm fearful of is that the you know the comps are going to be all over the state right so what happens in you know San Francisco Bay area is totally different ball game or what's in San Diego what's in La um and you know I I think it would be unlikely that we're going to find you know really really truly comparable situations that are you know within enough proximity that they would be considered you know really really true comps for that purpose but I it's definitely definitely something we can explore we could even talk to DC deep dcg potentially and see what method they would recommend or you know if there's some number we can bring forward with the understanding that it's going to have all kinds of limitations on it and and if it's too much then please don't you know I mean I I just want to gauge and let the community know that we are we considered all of these things right I mean I don't think anyone really wants to see any of these properties sold off and and whatever but you know I mean this is the trend this is what's happening that way we can feel confident moving forward like yeah well you know again the maintenance costs we know let's say we're already spending a hundred thousand a year or something maintaining the school 75 cents a square foot is not going to cut it you know I I'm just saying you know like that's just really good data to know um versus I think it'd be great if we you know this is one thing to have a great idea it's another again if we can't pay for it if we can't sustain it if we're losing money I mean my goodness you know we we don't have the luxury to do that you know just one other point of consideration is that in valuing schools and universities uh oftentimes it's based on land Value Plus uh replacement cost that would be an easy metric to use to value just at the schools that it wouldn't help so much rent really value uh is there a reason why we're not advertising uh this they can spoke especially the Mountain View considering it's been awakened for the last four years so um the decision was to make um pause until we ensure we understand what we what the Board of Education wanted to do with the properties could have been an easy Amazon warehouse Prime I have um more of a procedural question here as we Talk Amongst the committee in your writing note and you're writing the report which I'm thankful because I somehow in my head thought I'd be writing something um that at some point we have to go school by school as a committee correct um when do we do that I know it's getting past it's getting a little late we've talked a lot we have a lot of ideas um is it the next meeting where just so I know what I'm doing we begin to go school by school what we need remembering we we like the idea of a community center we like the idea of maybe retaining one property for a a lease um and then we like you know Sloss in for the kitchen and the way I'm looking in the way we've been talking I'm just gonna put out there that it sounds about 50 50 on properties that we have six of right um and so procedural question is there voting that happens is there when we're writing these these this report it does this is like a really simple report I'm like this is not a lot of information um but it's going to be longer and it is going to be step by step and do the reasoning to the board needs to be in there we think we should attempt to sell Mountain View because it's been vacant for four years there's nobody it hasn't been up for at least I'm just asking is that what the report's going to look like yeah so let me start um lots of things to address there and I'm glad you asked no it's these are good questions so um the board or the the report doesn't need to be any more detail than it is currently so don't feel like it needs to be this long you know like dissertation of all of the things that were discussed it certainly can have more detail if that's that is the desire of the committee um I would say I would tend to to recommend that it not be we want you to do this that's lost and we want you to break this in half this is a site we want you to sell because again right there's information that we don't know that the board has access to that's really going to impact you know which site is the for example if the recommendation from the committee is let's really maximize value and sell one site just one you know potentially the board's gonna see well we have some some estimates right that this is the highest value site if we're going to sell one let's get you know let's let's maximize value on that right and so um again my recommendation would just be give them enough enough leeway to use all the information that they have to properly execute what you are recommending right um so as far as the the the the process we can we can go site by site now and say Surplus or not Surplus we can we can also and and then I can you know take all of these big broad ideas that we have and kind of put them back into the report um kind of what we're looking at is is the next big step here is to have a public hearing and usually there's a final version or an almost final version of the report where the committee feels really comfortable that that's kind of what what we're asking the community to come speak to so um that can happen at the next meeting it can we can have one one more meeting in the interim you know between to really flesh out additional you know Concepts here um it really just depends on your your level of comfort with where we are with the report with the understanding that I will make changes but we will have to go site by site and say you know Surplus not Surplus we don't vote um individually on those sites there's kind of a like a final approval of the report as a whole it's really more of kind of a um organic discussion about you know we there seems to be a consensus that there this site is Surplus um so hopefully that that helps to address I mean it's it's sounding to me like we're not feeling like we're going to be able to get this in as final of the form as we need for the hearing by the end of tonight because things are getting late so maybe that's really what we focus on is that that's kind of our Central focus at the next meeting is continue drafting of the report um as well as review of some additional data that we've that we've heard that you're you know that you're asking to see um so that's that's where I'm hearing things going because maybe you know we um on the 21st which is which is the proposed date here that we'll vote on in a minute um but that we focus on you know additional drafting I will bring a revised version of this that kind of incorporates what I've heard so far and then we can we can you know help to finalize before the hearing at the following meeting thank you and just to answer um so I was able to find the average um going price um when we first started the lease was a dollar Thirty per square foot and then we gave the discount rate of 75 per square foot and how many square feet are they running oh great question they're currently Leasing a total of 970 square feet the monthly was seven thousand dollars you mean 9 700 square feet okay sorry I heard 970.

invite Shasta principal Bruce baynard to the podium there you go good evening uh thanks for having Shasta Elementary enthusiasts here tonight um at the beginning of the school year I got a message from two of our teachers Paige Bush and Karen Armstrong saying hey there's this conference that we'd like to go to AG in the classroom and I thought well that seems awfully silly but as I thought about it and realized that if you walk out the front door of Shasta you are less in a football field away from walking into Orchards and so I said yes let's do it and so what started as a dream of two teachers has become a full-blown movement at Shasta we've currently raised over forty five thousand dollars for our Enthusiast program and we are looking to make a few drastic changes to what our school looks like and how we approach agriculture in as far as our social studies and our science curriculum so I'm very happy to introduce the one of the leaders of our Enthusiast program fifth grade teacher Paige Bush and some of her students friends good evening everyone thank you board members and district office staff members for having us here tonight we're excited to share a small glimpse of what we've been learning about throughout this year and how we've Incorporated again to the classroom as someone who grew up in a farming family studied it in college and am still actively involved in our Butte County Agricultural Community I know just how essential it is for students to have an understanding of where their food comes from and we are lucky to come from such a rich agricultural state that serves the world so with me tonight are a few of my fifth grade students to share what we've been up to I have with me Kelby wood Dane Lapp Maisie Brian Laney lap Max houdegi oh I think I agriculture industry careers in ag are much more than chasing cows and picking strawberries we've explored many career options in various Industries such as Aviation farming ranching food production meat processing AG mechanics and more in the fall we built scarecrows representing five different AG careers pumpkin farmer Gardener almond farmer beekeeper animal Rancher and AG mechanic and shared Butte County Agriculture information board members can you name one of the top four Commodities in Butte County that is one of the top four Commodities any anyone else nuts almonds Ammons let me tell you what all the top four Commodities Commodities in Butte County are walnuts almonds prunes and rice at our annual Farmer's dinner we are able to create an act easiest corner where students and families could plant seeds with the help of Chico FFA students we got to have a taste of Butte County featuring rice walnuts almonds and prunes and students got to meet kiss the Cow Dairy calf thanks to Chico State Dairy unit we've also begun to buy planter boxes that are housed outside of classrooms [Applause] so many things related to agriculture as someone who is not from a family of farmers or Ranchers it has been eye-opening to learn about where our food comes from one of my favorite things is our try Tuesdays where we learn about a commodity and they get to taste test it and keep a Journal Record of likes and dislikes we've tried many different things this year like passion fruit kumquats blood oranges prunes guavas and much more we teamed up with three other classes to attend a virtual field trip hosted by the dairy Council of California visiting a dairy and I made ice cream in a bag afterwards we adopted an almond tree and got to have live exams with the farmer herself and tried blanched roasted natural almonds in the fall around Halloween time we dissected Pig eyeballs learning about the different parts um a local ophthalmologist and then getting hands-on experience dissecting them with a partner earlier this month we went for an in-depth field trip to the Chico State Farm learning All About Meat Processing organic vegetable projects including vermiculture which is composting with worms aquaculture which is growing plants with soil and using fish to put nutrients in the water milking cows at the dairy and learning about their nutrition plants and visiting the greenhouse and propagating succulent succulents last week we attended the virtual California Farm day with ag in the classroom and 22 000 students across the state which focused on how weather affects agriculture foreign at the end of April Miss Bush and Mrs Armstrong organized an on-campus AG day we worked with eight different Community Partners each who gave a quick presentation or demonstration to students in all grades by the end of the day it was as if we had gone on eight field trips at once our class got to act act as AG ambassadors and help classes at each station students got bite-sized information of AG from Chico fa Horticulture students who taught us about what plants need to grow and we did a possible life cycle activity Chico FFA AG welding students who showed us why welders are important what is used for as well as letting us try on their welding leathers and helmets parsley Farms explained that Harvest process of walnuts and showed us off two pieces of a harvest equipment and left us with a walnut tasting Chico State beef unit students explained why cattle brands are important for ranchers taught us how to read different prints then we got to create our own ranch name and brand on an ear tag statista 4-H was there to talk about her animal projects and the responsibilities that go into having farm animals we also had an aunt also had animals that students could pet including a rabbit chickens and a baby doll sheep Chico State Dairy students were there to talk about why dairy cows are important what types of products we get from them it ended with a cheese tasting honeybee Discovery Center ladies explained all about honey and how it is made and how to tell the difference between the queen bee and the other bees they brought a glass observation Hive so that we could try and find the queen Butte County Farm Bureau was there to talk about agriculture in our County and give taste tests of rice black olives and olive oil overall we had a great day and we can't wait to host again next year with new Community Partners [Applause] we started the Euro harvesting the summer crop in the fall we replanted and harvested the winter crops like lettuce and chard recently in April we planted the garden so that it will be able available for our summer school program to harvest and make salsa our favorite part is trying new food straight out of the garden or bringing them back to class and creating snacks like zucchini pizza we also love to play with bugs pull weeds see what works and doesn't grow well and get our hands dirty we Harvest and share the produce in our farm stand outside our classroom where Shasta families can take home fresh fruits and veggies and students have access to new foods students like students take turn take turns daily being the bunny babysitter and make sure she has hate pellets and clean fresh water being fresh bedding and we love to take her out in the garden and share her with other classes we've learned about hatching chicks while candling them to see movement inside the egg hatching two last week and many more today we not only have the set in our classroom but a set hatching in the corner of the cafeteria for the whole school to be involved in the process check adoption papers have gone out to families and students will be taking them home foreign we have done two school-wide taste testing this year almonds donated by Anderson and Sons shelling company and honey sticks donated by honeybee Discovery Center teachers are provided with a slideshow of information particular to that commodity with pictures and videos then students taste and fill out worksheets to take home and share with their family teachers share share information that can be used for math practice problems [Applause] all right so as you can see this is just a little bit of what we've been doing as Mr B mentioned this has been a school-wide movement other teachers have jumped on board with doing try it Tuesdays or going on field trips that are AG specific it's been something very exciting and something that we hope to grow as a school-wide in general are there any questions from the board members for my students yes what's the bunny's name I didn't see it on the screen I was looking can you tell me just one more thing about Darla what does she like to eat uh what were you just speaking of the lettuce carrots right lettuce tell them about carrots um Darla does not like carrots it hurt they hurt her tummy any other questions yes um did you give Darla some kind of sedative before bringing her here wow this is 50 little kids chasing you all the time can we pass Darla around the board in the audience no just kidding thank you for coming in and you guys all did a great job talking and um as somebody who's also a farmer I I'm really happy that we have this going on in our schools and thank you Ms Bush for your leadership in this area I love it as well and miss fish I just want to come into you and your students for your excellent presentation communication and speech skills you guys were fabulous thank you [Applause] I also can say that I learned that prunes are the other commodity for Butte County I had no idea so thank you for teaching me something today um all right uh do we still have more student reports or are we moving on to superintendents we can move on to the superintendent's report uh while I typically don't need to give him a microphone I'm going to go ahead and ask Jay Marshall to step up to the mic all right I'm gonna I'm gonna ask a couple people to come up if I could get Austin Keane King and Ryan Willard to come up as you're coming up I'm we're acknowledging these two teachers from Marsh junior high on April 20th we had our community Youth Fair it was our second year in a row that we had our community Youth Fair and both of these gentlemen were very helpful on that Community Youth Fair Ryan is our leadership teacher at Marsh junior high school and Austin King is our band teacher at Marsh Junior High School Ryan's and his leadership students I'm set up music before the the fair started so when people were coming up and setting up they had music his leadership students also sold food and we're a big part of the cleanup afterwards so I wanted to thank Ryan for his help on that and Austin had I believe 15 band students come and they actually played four songs at the beginning of the community Youth Fair to start it off so I wanted to appreciate them coming out on us on a weekend a week I mean a weeknight to come out and help us out for that community Fair [Applause] come on over here thank you guys for doing that thank you thank you for coming in I have one more that um that I'm going to have come up tonight um I had to actually FIB right to her face and she actually made me look into her eye and I fibbed anyway I told her that I needed her just in case we were going to go over the 19 vendors that we had at the community fair but this young lady if I can have her come up it's Kim Hernandez where are you Kim there she is she is not going to be happy with me tomorrow all right come on are we up again this is our second year doing the community Youth Fair and Kim has done an amazing work she had 19 vendors to come this year in 26 last year she contacts all the vendors and we and sends out notices about what time and gets everything ready gets set up make sure everything is set up for them along with Phil Morgan thank you for your help with facilities they do a great job it's something that Mr tennis brought to us a couple years ago to see if we could bring out different things that are happening in our community that parents can get involved with so I just wanted to thank Kim Hernandez for all her hard work for the last two years of getting this fare going so thank you Kim I appreciate it sorry I look great thank you and then in closing I'd just like to point out that Diane Olson is attending her last school board meeting she is retiring as director of special education so a huge thank you to Diane for all the work that she's done and that concludes my report all right um number six is announcements uh this is a time when the board uh board members can make announcements regarding upcoming student events student awards School side accomplishments Etc do we have any announcements from board members this evening all right seeing none we will move on to items from the floor Adam's from the floor are for speakers who wish to address the board regarding a topic that is not currently agendized on this evening's agenda at this time we will take public comment from speakers who wish to address the board for topics not agendized for this meeting as a reminder speakers have three minutes to address the board a bell will ring when 30 seconds of speaking time remains so just be listening for that Bell that means you have 30 seconds to wrap up your comments and then we will say thank you for your time the board can listen to public comment but cannot respond to speakers under items from the floor because it is not an agendaized item um so we did have several speakers sign up for items from the floor this evening and I will just start at the top of the list I will read the name of the person who is up and then also who will be on deck so that you can be prepared if your name gets called next um if time remains um actually there won't be time I don't think what will remain we'll see how far we get with this list so up first we will hear from Sarah I'm going to name Sarah valum and up after that will be Sean Liston hi bored so nice to see you I should have brought my three minute hi I'm Sarah I've met some of you I am a teacher here at Chico Unified and I also happen to be a parent of a very floppy-haired Inspire student um I want to open with thanking this board because I don't think the job you do is very easy and you're doing it for our community plug now I'll talk about as you sit next to someone on the board that you may have differences with and sometimes that can be uncomfortable but differences actually help solidify and clarify our thinking right so you might think that inspires school there's somebody else they're different but actually they help us learn and grow and they're part of our neighborhood community um I loved seeing PV and Chico High I think about a block schedule because I could tell from my son's experience at Inspire that it was absolutely a wonderful way to to learn you have to go deeper into the subject because you have longer time frames I would love for Chico high and Inspire to consider some of the things that Chico high and PV to consider some of the things Inspire does like um advisory The Advisory system follows a student they get input in that class with those peers and they follow all the way through and I think we know after kovid that social emotional is really important for our teenagers so even though they're sort of different and they don't always feel like part of that Chico Unified Community I highly highly encourage you to go ahead and work with the facilities this group of people over here has some pretty amazing creative Innovative people Innovative has gotten money they have a grant and if your neighbor said can you hold my 8 million dollars and don't let me lose it uh you would feel bad if you dropped that eight million dollars you would go back to Safeway and say have you seen an 8 million dollar check so I really highly encourage you to encourage the leadership to look at facilities and working to make Inspire have a long-term campus and get Chico High their CTE goals thank you Phil [Applause] sorry I have a technical question really quick for for my guy here okay thanks for bearing with us are we ready to check it out okay um before you start the the person after you will be Carrie Jamison thank you all right thanks uh ironically I was one of the ophthalmologists that helped the fifth graders at Shasta dissect a cow's eye so glad to glad to hear that made an impact um I'm here tonight because Inspire needs and deserves a permanent home the current location was built on the blacktop at Chico high in 30 year old Portables that are falling apart the decision about where to house Inspire has been pushed off for far too long and it's time to stop avoiding the duty to provide them with a permanent campus inspires success is personal for my family the reality is that our son who is now a sophomore will never walk on a permanent campus but his experience with Inspire and what this school will mean to children like him in our community is why I'm here today he was supposed to be performing tonight and he asked that I not attend his performance and actually speak here because he felt this was more important our son attended a local Junior High and never felt like he fit in he was bullied by his peers for being different and those experiences left him with low self-esteem anxiety and thoughts of suicide he was sent home regularly with complaints of stomach aches and sought opportunities to stay home sick from school because of how he was treated by his peers in eighth grade he was granted special permission to stop participating in PE because of constant torment from his peers which was having a significant impact on his mental health the idea of a fresh start in high school was appealing to every one of us Inspire has changed everything for our son he started his freshman year with the same insecurities and self-doubt he still battles anxiety but thanks to extraordinary teachers and staff who build meaningful connections a smaller School environment with kids who share his love for the Arts and appreciate him for the person he is things have totally changed he no longer has regular panic attacks and he enjoys going to school he has been given opportunities to perform and his confidence and self-esteem have steadily improved he participates in several of their choir and theater programs and even joined and competed in their mock trial team I guess law is a different kind of theater this summer he will begin taking coursework through the Butte College concurrent enrollment program so we can free up time on his schedule to take on even more electives and he is enrolled in AP classes offered on campus we don't think this would have been possible if he attended any of the other high schools in Chico and that's not a slight on them it's what he needs he needed Inspire he needed a smaller School we're asking for Chico Unified to re-engage in discussions on a permanent campus and make this a priority on their facilities plan thank you thank you with Carrie Jamison and then Julie threet [Applause] hi my name is Carrie Jamison and I will be leaving at 6 45 to see my son at Inspire his last performance I'm a proud speech language pathologist serving Chico Unified School District I'm also a volunteer coach at the intermediate and high school level and a parent of children in both traditional and Charter Schools I have always loved Chico and have been very proud and grateful to the board for initially authorizing the blue Oak Charter and Inspire as well as providing thematic Hands-On learning such as Hooker Oak and schools of choice such as Rosedale those are just a few of the many choices we have in Chico and what an amazing place that we live we should all be very proud I wanted to come to the board tonight to reiterate aboard a few board initiatives and Chico Unified directives that I take very seriously in my job first of all aboard initiative to provide academic instruction and interventions to ensure student learning and high achievements for each and every student and I do believe that we mean every student that lives within the Chico Unified School District boundaries whether or not they attend a Chico Unified School a measure K endorsement by Tom Lando in 2016 who said students and teachers perform better in safe high quality schools whether you have children in school or not good schools are the backbone of a strong community and protect our property values and a chica unified fight expectation for all staff number one remember that the most fundamental and important relationship in the teaching learning process is that between the teacher and the student and I think we've seen that a lot with a lot of you know Shasta coming here Hooker Oak Inspire and a board directive District Mission demonstrate that all students are our students and they take that very seriously I think that all students in Chico are our students whether or not they attend a specific Chico Unified School a charter school a school of choice or Alternative Learning I just would really encourage us as a community to kind of change our dialogue it's not us against them I mean look at Marigold Loma Vista Pleasant Valley we have special education we have general education we have public Head Start we have Private Preschool it's all coming together to create something really wonderful same with just with Shasta I mean out tonight and talking about the Agriculture and then Chico High coming in with FFA so I just really would encourage all of us to look at this as a dialogue of supporting all of our students as a community and looking for creative ways that we can all support one another and I thank you very much thank you we have Julie three and then Eric Nelson uh Julie three um I'm here to advocate for the vaccine injured it's a little different topic here for tonight um I stand before you I took two modern shots January February 2021 I got brain fog I got tinnitus and I'm sitting here with five eye surgeries emergency eye surgeries later there's actually an article I'm glad there's an ophthalmologist here coveted vaccines linked to untreatable eyeball clots reveals massive study um here's my Bears report it's what they look like here's my mother's report she was a sudden cardiac event four shots of moderna and she dropped down suddenly on vacation last year so two of us are in Bears I implore you I will be available to any of your staff you've got a lot of students here tachycardia I'm hearing all day long I worked at the those Mass vaccination clinics at Marion Park and at the fairgrounds 200 shots an hour the first injury I saw was a Chico State track athlete sat in a chair shot an arm kids on the floor with a seizure Dr Andy Miller was there and we had to take care of the man I heard these menstrual disruptions all day long by the community college students that I worked with those nursing students we need to help this community heal the good news is there's detox strategies there's a way to get through the brain fog there's a way to address some of these eyeball clots I've talked to the um the uh the folks over at the um when I had two cataract surgeries and three retinal detachments I do also have the I got from the county every single one of the batches that we administered into this County so if your staff if your students if anybody's interested again I'm available look we can look up the batch numbers off your vaccine card and you can actually see how many people have died how many actual Bears reports have been entered so I've got this information we need to heal this community doesn't matter if you're black yellow red green purple what side you're on left red if you're senior if you're young this stuff is poison it's now being exposed and we need to get behind that we need to make sure we stop these injections and then we need to start healing your school district so thank you for your time hi we have Eric Nelson and then Sasha Anya good evening as inspires first principal superintendent I thought it would be helpful to review the for the board a brief history of inspires in partnership with cusd pursuit of their own facility in 2009 cusd approached a team of Educators led by Ron Pope to explore the possibilities of opening a Charter High School in Chico the idea was under cusd guidance to develop a charter with Educators from the district rather than deal with the possibility of a group outside of our community doing the same Inspire received a 450 000 planning Grant and they were on their way at that same time the district was improving facilities at CHS to include a two-story classroom building along Sacramento Avenue this opened up the Portables at CHS as a solution to a site for the school inspires current site this was intended to be a temporary housing and in the first two years cusd and Inspire explored a variety of possibilities for a fat facility a site was chosen adjacent to Chapman Elementary an architect was hired by cusd to design the site and the initial estimate for the project was four million dollars however the final cost of the project came in at 9 million putting the project to 225 percent over the original estimate while Inspire collaborated on the design for the school Inspire had no control over the management of the development of the project as a result in 2012 the district agreed to follow to allow Inspire to continue occupying the facilities on the chico High campus and signed a 10-year facilities use agreement outlining the terms occupancy through 2022.

but each and every one of us has got persevered through it all and has grown from every difficulty that we have encountered we just shake it off and these are the skills that we will carry with us for the rest of our lives while many of us may find ourselves questioning when we will ever use the second derivative of x squ or when we'll need to know all the elements on the periodic table the great Albert Einstein said it best education if that is that which remains if one has forgotten everything you learned in school it's the skills we have acquired throughout our time in high school that will last a lifetime every mistake we have made every test we've gotten back and cringed at the score all the lessons that we have learned these are the true things that will stay with us forever so as we all go out into the world I am confident that each and every one of us will achieve a great feat as long as we apply all the lessons that we have learned and as long as we dream big as Elanor Roosevelt said the future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams the future will not fall in the hands of those who stand idly by we all must dream big and keep pushing towards our goals each and every every day we'll while we'll all face many challenges in the future as we have throughout our time in high school as Taylor Swift says the hater is going to hate hate hate hate but we'll continue to take each of these challenges as a chance to grow we're going to shake shake shake shake shake shake it off and as we keep persisting through the hard times and dreaming big we'll be able to enjoy the beautiful view as we can today so next time you hear year congratulations we made it make sure to enjoy the moment but never forget to enjoy the journey that you have taken to get there so once again congratulations class of 2023 I cannot wait to see all the great things that everyone will accomplish in the future great job seniors please [Applause] rise and now it is with thank you very much our board president Mr Jim Smith thank you everyone for being here today um I'm overwhelmed and so thankful to see so many people from Clifton Community here today as Dr robitosi said we started this idea back a few years ago the field that our baseball team was playing on here deplorable didn't even describe it unplayable teams would come here and laugh at us we were thankful moving it from there to Nash Park where the city helped us out and Nash had some difficulties as well so here we are at the new not named yet complex at Woodrow Wilson Middle School for our baseball team and our girls soccer when we met with the Architects we asked them and our architect is here somewhere Rodney raise your hand so everyone can thank you for the work that you did [Applause] uh we asked our Architects is there any way we can put a soccer field on this field and initially we were told no and through ingenious Minds we now have a soccer field that's going to be utilized here as well but it was so important to this board and previous boards that are kids have a respectable baseball Soccer Complex and for the gym classes here at Woodrow our principal of Woodrow Mr Andy Yeager where's Andy say hi to everybody Andy is beyond thrilled to be able to have this field for his gym classes and they have been on it just about every day I pass by here and they're on it they love it and that's what it's all about so when we went out to the public and we needed the public support as Dr robitosi said it was important to get the public involved in this because this is a public facility it's a focal point for the city maybe the city council will take some lessons from us and they'll put Turf over at Nash that'd be a nice nice idea council members our kids deserve this our kids are important to us and it was very important to our construction crew that this field be ready for our current seniors to be able to utilize it and Kyle Rogers gave me numerous phone calls that said when is that field going to be ready can we get on it I want to play on it while I'm a senior here at Clifton High School and Kyle this board made your dreams come true so um that this is going to be a field that's going to be used obviously by our high school but obviously we'll be opening it up to some community events um and such so I cannot begin to thank all those that were involved in the referendum committee without your help without your support without you going and selling this to the public this would not have happened as Dr robitosi said at the time we were the largest referendum in the state of New Jersey some rich town just beat us by uh another 170 million but in any event it was a great commitment by the taxpayers of Clifton that they felt what we're doing here in town was important so I'm so grateful and thankful to the entire referendum committee for all their hard work someone who is very influential and helpful to us in in Clifton um and was influential in helping us um get this referendum project done and if you know uh her she uh her mouth alone can do wonders um in getting the message out and yeah that's Jen algeri Jen thank you for all your hard work [Applause] so this is probably the uh the most difficult part of my job here so I'm going to try and uh introduce uh the dignitaries that are here today and please if I mispronounce or somehow you're not on my list it does not mean that you're not important to this there's so many people here that were so influential so I thank you tremendously so I'd just like to start with our Board of Education Commissioners so now so everyone understands we had previous board members that were here that worked on getting this project put together they voted to approve it and they've come back today to be uh to be part of the ceremony so we thank them as well but I'll introduce our current board to you um my vice president Lucy Danny Mrs Judith basford Mr Alan Paris Mr Mark brunsiak Mr faheem abadrabo Mr Tony Santiago and arriving late is uh our baby commissioner Mr commissioner Richie Mejia former board members that are here and we thank them for being here we have Mr Joe Canova Mr Frank Casper and Mr Jim Daly [Applause] administrative wise I can't tell you the Catalyst hours that Administration was putting all this together so from Dr robitosi's office we have probably the the two great secretaries in not only in our district but throughout the state we have Teresa and Alice say hi to them over at the uh at the fence from the uh from the business office uh we have um our business administrator I think here Mike OC we have the assistant business administrator imagine sorry [Applause] um and I think I saw Mike Burns Mike Burns is the guy who's going to make the permits happen three years so uh you want to make friends with Mike Burns uh from our city council we have our our mayor mayor Greg Greg Grabowski thank you we have councilman Tony Latona [Applause] our health director and many other titles Mr John beagle [Applause] Recreation we have Debbie Oliver representing us from uh Little League Baseball we have our district administrator Mike Phillips president of Little League baseball in Clifton we have Lisa Valentine and part of Little League Baseball is Elizabeth Orlando um I'm gonna try and cut this short but not take any anyone away um our high school administration that is here I know we have our principal Mr humda [Applause] um I know Miss Rogers is here Mr Keegan Mr Dozier and um I can't remember her married name but I still call her um May Conti from the security end uh later on you're going to be getting a um a um we hope everyone's going to get that you may have to you may have to there's no scalping these balls afterwards uh for money here uh it's very limited edition you might want to hold on to them but um without the hard work dedication so many hours doing this by hand uh we have our PR director Miss Samantha durose thank you so much for the work that you put into this I can't not thank for their tremendous support throughout everything that happens in Clifton but we have uh Sergeant jordina here and my good friend Mr Colucci I saw him somewhere there he is thank you guys uh for being here from our maintenance department um somebody that has been put into this project to oversee all the projects and the special projects Mr Al marcion thank you for all the work that you've done on this uh Eddie Maldonado foreign Smith and I can never remember moves last name but come on um also this event is being um live streamed by the help of our tremendous teacher and a live stream coordinator and uh just recently won a very prestigious award as the I can't remember the title but basically it was the live streamer of the year um Mr Mark Mecca him it is counterpart uh Vinnie who's a graduate attending Montclair State he's out here all the time for us Vinnie I don't know where you are though but without these people invite in this I know I saw Rob algeri's here from our from our maintenance as well um we're so grateful and so thankful to all of you um I know our assistant superintendents um marching Garrow had to be uh held back for for an emergency but we do have um Miss Janita kusilevich here [Applause] um Andy's uh I know Andy's right hand um right hand um Vice principals in our are here Mr menkin is here [Applause] okay so everyone kept coming into my ear and saying you know you can't forget County Commissioner Bruce James you know he's from Clifton and thank you Bruce for being here and I kind of kept Bruce to the lot to to near last not because of Any importance but this board might be coming to the county to maybe helping us enhance this project a little bit and maybe we could put some lights up here maybe with the County's help we might be able to achieve that but anyhow uh Bruce we truly thank you for being here that was just a that was just a side note that's not has nothing to do with why you're here we thank Mr mccunney for all the work that he does in filming and the cast program and getting this and um I thank Mike from the uh from the cable TV channel Mike thank you for being here as well we have many of our faculty here supervisors um all those we're so grateful and thankful to you and of course I'll be introducing him next to our our athletic director who's done such a wonderful job um Mr Tom malehi yeah and our human resources um director Mr Luis Ross [Applause] and coach Rivera where's coach this was a dream of coaches um I don't think coach ever thought it would become a reality and a few years back I promised him that this board in the previous board would get behind this and get it done and here it is so folks just so you know and uh Danny where's Danny Rogers the uh the uh booster club president Danny thank you thank you this is such a collaborative effort and I thank everybody for your hard work and dedication in making this happen so I don't want to keep everyone uh too much longer I just want to feel everyone in a little bit so the project is not 100 complete uh we're waiting for a major component which is public service to get here and give us our electric so if any of you have any connection at PSENG please call them up and tell them we need the electric tomorrow because our bathrooms can't be opened up because you won't see where you're going our concession stand our scoreboard so they're holding us up on many aspects of this project and there are still some other things that have to be done um like our flagpole didn't get put in yet so there's a amazing other things that are going to happen at this complex so again I thank everybody that has been involved in this for your dedication your devotion and I I'm not gonna say this um I shouldn't say it out loud but I will hey unless it's a coincidence and we know the potential and we knew that they had the talent to put it together but our baseball team seemed to have taken a turn to the win column once this field was put in play so I think guys it's brought you some good luck as well and thank you uh Mr Stan Stan Lemberg the soccer coach uh could not be here there was a death and a good friend of his and he couldn't be here and uh looking out in the center there I see our longtime trainer trainer Tom is here okay so they're giving me the um the ax the Rope whatever it is um so we're going to end with oh no Mr Malay he is coming first and then we're gonna end with some great music and then we ask that you all stay around we have some great uh treats for you over at the clubhouse area so again thank you all so very much for this this is a great day Clifton thank you foreign [Applause] thank you thank you president Smith and I'll I'll be quick I see everybody eyeing down the hot dog cart and uh teams are both really ready to get it in today so we're excited uh for today's game this is always a fun game it's a big rivalry for us um I want to thank the team for for their patience uh the coaching staff for their professionalism um you know we're going week by week uh you know maybe we'll play this week maybe we won't um the job moves along really quickly we got about 98 of the way done and that last two percent just seemed to take forever so we appreciate everything that everyone's done we appreciate the administration uh Dr robitosi and his team and uh the board they've done a tremendous amount of projects uh for the athletic department and just a quick story when uh Dr robitosi first got here um three four years ago uh on one of his first days he asked me to take him for a tour of our facilities and when this was one of the first one that we came to and he said you have to be kidding me and he said you have nothing to worry about we got this and true to his word he did he did the board did uh the taxpayers and the referendum crew did a tremendous job so again thank you everyone um looking forward to a great game today and hopefully you come back for more thank you Mr melaye now the moment I know you've all been anxious for we're gonna cut this ribbon we're gonna sing a song and we're gonna play turn it over to Martha and we can come back to any questions that you all have extra portion louder um but it's amazing what um all the ideas and all the work that have come and that we go back to like two three years ago where the community um we brought the community in and we got ideas and um we surveyed our family because the parents were like we want our kids out outside back to project Baseline philosophically and I know this information are crucial Learners Visual and fictionalists most of our students working again hi the more that I work one of the things that we've discovered is not discovered but with time to get centered on our website inform our teachers that are parents one of the things that I've learned is when they are invested in equivalented when they are investigating especially observations so as we go through this um I wanted to give you a little bit of research when we did all these measures in the business one of the things we wanted to do and we planned was to take our leaders so they can have first hand experience of what an investment is right of how you're going to expand your curiosity about why did the leads look somebody does what is the pattern to tell you a belief why is the first hand um doing an investigation and working with our colleagues as we gave them questions and and and they sparkly authorized they had the opportunity to wonder and ask questions about nature and connect Back To Nature and so with that we brought it back and as the committee came back together and we brought back the research the experiences you know we were like what you know it's so important one of the things we learned you know about a design and one of the things that I'm really really I want to say proud of the committee is that we have been planning the design and the instructional program apparently right together because yes you can have this beautiful class but then the destruction is such an important aspect to what so as we haven't done this plan and this is I can't wait for this Vision my my son and my husband and we live in the community too so we need to go back one more so one of the things that we just got are the five days yeah one of the things that as we were thinking inquiry was was was the theme of all this investigation of all this research and under inquiry so think about inquiry as being your umbrella right and under your umbrella you'll have your different raindrops there are methods and so one of the methods very popular right now so we especially some people met right but something that our teachers so um it is and when we think about the five is this method was discovered by the scientific um curriculum of study of the study of science so it's not new but it takes the kids through faces and they're not linear they're not necessarily have to be linear but when we think about the fighting then the first e is they're engaging so if you're sparking the Curiosity of a wetland s um no no no I'm not and I'm not I'm talking in general like a lot of our teachers because it is an instructional shift when I was introduced I was like oh I don't know that is hard that's hard to plan you know and you're right there's there needs to be more tools and more resources um and then we get to the evaluation so as you think about the 5vs what it looks like when you're outdoor and not only outdoor or bringing them back to indoor right so we can use the space as our third teacher which is a really important part of it um yeah I think about what was our next I talked about that the field trip and so when we think about Outdoor Learning stuff is you know how can and and through our design it was very obvious that some of our not obvious but it was saving of our goals of sustainability the the ecosystem how can we have our kids connect to the Natural light how can they um learn that it doesn't take only one person to sustain the excitement it has to go from the admin each other to the community just really learn how to collaborate so they have sustainability into English um we'll talk about the third the third the the same in the certain future um here you know worship is a big goal that as we were planning the design and planning the instructional program of them really empowering their students to be advocates for their environment so as the committee got throughout the years we've been collecting all this information would be collecting the input of the community the input of the teacher's input of Advent you know together we created this vision and what is this Mission going to look like so today we are very grateful that you guys are here um we really we didn't visit Awakening seat this is the school that is very limited of resources but the learning.com through we have their own garden they um they have an environment where the teacher lets the students really learn um with just very limited materials because it's it's a private school um and they have very limited resources the teacher but for me it's a big I've been to a teacher for twice and when I went to private schools that have projects in the vision and the way they use their indoor and then doors but it was like wow my vision in my head hurt if you imagine school but like we need x y and D we need we need all the different things to make this happen when we really don't it's the imagination what do you have at home that you can bring in to make this project the community so I we wanted to share that and we took a lot of pictures about a lot of ideas of like Hey we're gonna need some cabinets to really put our gardening stuff so it's accessible for kids and our kids don't have bringing all their way so we're still black as much we can we'll be reaching out for more as we continue to progress with the project but this is a first step for us in getting some feedback on whatever development all that that they pulled in helped bring us to here and now we want more feedback to help continue with the project as we thank you so much for being here tonight and we're here to answer any questions you might have I love everything um as a physical education guy um oh Jim it's 117 degrees in Arizona you have no multi it is these spaces and that is to being involved with nature because good news in what nature is given you at every certain time genetic one of the things I I haven't even had a chance to share this yet but one of the things I want the vision team to get some time with is there's a concept out there I had never seen before an accidentally came across it recently but it's called Junk Parts has anyone ever heard of junk parts so yeah right so so then are in the you know you have to have what you consider an acceptable level of risk so that way kids are able to develop that you work your way up yeah yeah so I think somewhere between Awakening seeing starting with from home so that they're not just beautiful trees that were putting money into the watering but we actually are getting something that hot so that was one thing the other thing is just wait it's kind of problem so um so we had this unique opportunity with this property even though we're going to bring a lot of new trees and Greenery into the campus to at least preserve some of the mature trees so we give some differentiation in size and Heights uh I think there is definitely a push and we're actually working to find some partners that can help us bring in more some other things just to give kids a variety of experience with trees but definitely but then also um is Arizona Everett you know start rationing water and then we also have drought period IC so I'm very excited about about it the whole vision of doctor is awesome I've already been doing that though so like a Creator lab like a technology space because I really I don't really like this so we can have maybe teaches and um into consideration three or four months of the year it feels like the things that you're going to hire teachers to want to learn fluidly in the city and that's a huge consideration because they quoted videos and made PSA conservation everybody and it is a 10 degrees cooler than other parts of the city at all times and I looked to the Amazon and I I know that it has been actually meant that we're planning out whatever the plans were doesn't change to allow them to utilize the space and to get grounded before they ended classroom instead of just taking them off the bus and shoving projects and the States you know working together but you also need to think about how Native sincere how it is God intended to be proved in the balls to shaping into things it's meant to be left to go down more or less so it's not a hundred percent and it is certain that more maintenance but we are trying to use a plant palette that is allowed to go native and not intended to be pedicures you might see in a lot of other types yeah I think a lot of people when they hear outdoor school they go uh it's hot here I think this should be a perfect presentation to families that there is consideration above the Heat and things put in place so that it is not for the kids is tonight [Music] good Ness um
