okay um and so what a nice win for them and and give them the best as they move forward I want to recognize uh Mr molaski's son Sheamus molaski I believe he said his school record for shot put and he beat it by like two foot or something crazy so um what a great moment for him and and he's just a great kid that we've had an opportunity to know through the years so really happy for him on the individual Accolade and then also I think the girls tennis one sectional so obviously you know not to uh nothing surprising there a lot of success we always have success but I want to recognize those teams if I missed anybody or didn't recognize anybody I'm sure Mr angel will know he knows about the underwater basket weaving team and he knows everything about all the school corporations so I'm sure he'll clean me up but uh wish everyone the best that's moving forward and advancing both individually as teams this uh the next few weeks thank you Mr Smith softball and baseball regionals do or sectionals to start this week to weekend technically so I have two this evening and Diana this isn't for you to do extra work but to our business leaders that actually have these individuals for the internship program I was at the luncheon this past week as well and those um business individuals open their doors to bring these students in and let them learn about everyday life which is as we know as adults as you get older isn't about getting on a phone and texting people so you learn so many more valuable lessons to help you in adulthood that I can't say nothing but thanks to all those individuals that help out our students and trying to learn those day-to-day skills that actually needed other than what they're learning in the classroom so thank you to all of them and then to all of our building leaders and staff that had to deal with these construction projects I've heard you know for lack of better term the the trouble that sometimes it causes changing classrooms moving things around and yet you're still expected to do a job so we understand that as a board and would like to say thanks for putting up with it you only got another week to go and then we can hopefully get a lot of these projects obviously completed that are due to be completed before the start of the school year next year but we know it's one of those things you just can't put a halt to and you have to move forward with it and do the best you can and we do thank you for all your patience in that process so with that I will look for a motion to adjourn motion by Mr Vassar seconded by Mr babjac all those in favor please signify by saying aye aye those opposed motion carries 5-0 thank you

buckle up for your science lesson for the evening on April 8th 2024 Lawrence Township will be in the path of totality for a total solar eclipse so if you look at the time frame for when that will be that'll be from 150 to 423 in the afternoon with the total eclipse occurring from approximately 306 to 309 we had one several years ago but Indianapolis Lawrence Township was not in the path of totality so that's the difference here we're going to cross right over us so obviously that is right in the middle of our dismissal times our elementary school is dismissed at approximately 235 and our secondary school is dismissed at approximately 3 45 so that was a concern that was brought to us so Dr Hoss Brown and I called back the District academic calendar committee as well as feedback and input from our Lea as you look at our neighbors our some of our neighbors have moved already we wanted to bring that information to you as well our neighbors to the no North have chosen to extend their Spring Break by one day to accommodate for the eclipse that's not really an option for us because we'll have already been back from spring break a whole week before the eclipse occurs our neighbors to the east have changed to a two-hour early release day that that day that was one option that was discussed but for logistical reasons as well as it wouldn't completely move us out of that window that was an option that was not looked at our neighbors to the South have already chosen an asynchronous e-learning day for that day in several other districts and townships are probably listening tonight maybe to see what Lawrence Township might be doing so the recommendations that we bring to you this evening are to move the already scheduled no school day that's currently scheduled for Tuesday February 20th 2024 to move that to Monday April 8th 2024 and make it a no school day on the day of the eclipse early that school day is on a four day weekend for presents Day weekend so it would still have Monday off for the holiday but we then would have school on Tuesday and then we would not have school on Monday April 8th and make that a three-day weekend as well we also recommend that working with the curriculum instruction division that we provide education leading up to that day prepare our students and staff to safely view the total solar eclipse present this to you as information at this time and happy to answer any questions thank you for that and I would like to thank the moon for managing this on a Monday yeah right yeah questions so I do have a question uh for the curriculum for um Mr noder have you been in contact at all with the Indiana historical or the Indiana State Museum I know that Bethany Thomas is doing some great work with schools and so I wasn't sure if you'd had a chance to connect with her I have not yet okay because they have got some great things planned so they could be a great resource for us absolutely mm-hmm good good good okay um that item having passed will move again to Mr miles and the results of the bids for the lease of the one-to-one devices thank you madam president members of the board Dr Smith it's my pleasure tonight to bring to you as an informational item a review uh going back to our April 24th board meeting when I came to you and asked for permission to advertise for leases to finance our one-to-one devices you will find uh on the slide the results of those those rfps that went out we had four bids that came back and got some competitive offers there that said since uh our time together on April 24th much has happened downtown at our state house which causes us to take pause in this area and we really want to wait um to find out more what's going to happen with our curricular resource fees our textbook rental fees and what we are going to be able to do and what the state is going to fund us for so we wanted to do this to be proactive and and do what we've done in years past as far as getting this out but we feel it's a prudent decision at this time to table this so I will bring that to you later tonight for a recommendation but this is for information at this time thank you and you're still you're still up with our financial update thank you madam president happy to still uh be up and share this information with you the board and Dr Smith uh it's again my pleasure to uh to share our month-end reports from April 30th for both our general fund and for the transportation fund starting first with the general fund um very encouraging numbers at the end of the month here um and and really on Pace and and kind of outpacing where we expected that we may be at this time so that's that's a good thing from the general fund standpoint and once again likewise from the Transportation fund um we have seen a little bit of an increase in costs as we've been kind of tracking those through the last few months keep noting our salary expenses are just a little high and also um our materials and supplies primarily because of fuel costs that we're still battling from from um as we compared to last year not of anything of concern but where you do see those uh the the lovely red x's and the green checks that's kind of giving giving you uh bringing your attention to that but nothing to be concerned at at this point and but happy to answer any questions that the board might have I did notice year to date our general fund we're down about two million dollars from the state funding the state support seems to be down to about two million dollars is that correct um Top Line the Top Line about um actually it's our projected was a 43 million just over 43 million and our actual year to date is is 42.7 almost so about a half million but that does happen from you know um on the revenue mine is not oh I'm sorry I'm looking at the the total there uh when you're just looking at the state support it is a little you're you're correct it is about two million dollars are they just behind on payments a little bit um no we probably just missed our projection on that a little bit some of as you can see the miscellaneous is far exceeding um what we thought there so there may have just been some funds shifted um you know from from our projections versus State support versus other other funding sources okay thank you questions I just had a quick one Mr miles and this relates to your old position too um but I've had questions from a couple constituents about how the cost of fuel has affected the district um can you explain in more detail about how they lock in we lock in prices so it doesn't fluctuate yeah absolutely so um we're a little bit of both hats on that one um we we are constantly looking at uh how we buy Fuel and when we buy Fuel and certainly we don't have a crystal ball to predict that and and moving some of the fleet over to propane has changed some of how how we purchase fuel as well but we do look to to lock in a percentage of our fuel in advance it does a couple things for us uh primarily what it is it fixes a piece of our budget so that it's not going to go out of control high granted if fuel were to drop we're not going to get that savings either but it at least allows us to to know what we've got we don't lock in or pre-purchase um all of our fuel because we do want to allow some flexibility and certainly um you know we have to kind of we have to determine a set amount of fuel that we're going to buy so we want to make sure we're going to use that as well so um that's kind of how we look at it sometimes we'll go a few months at a time sometimes we may go three or three to six months at a time it just depends on what the market looks like and and how we're working with our Consultants you're welcome Smith okay well we'll go on to our committee chair reports um Dr Smith you wanna uh we're going to go to our foundation report okay Ms Norman's ready thank you madam president this is from Miss Gibbs um just four points to cover tonight again stealing from the principals uh the first one is that I guess this year more than seventy one thousand dollars in scholarships were awarded to LT graduating seniors through the foundation that's exciting the next big event is for the kids golf outing it'll be June 1st at Old Oakland golf course thank you a big thank you to our corporate sponsors um and also there are a few spots left so you can go to the msdltf.org site to register finally LT mom's care has raised 8 000 of the 10 000 goal and then finally Lawrence Township School Foundation enjoyed having over 500 students coaches and family Runners from Lawrence Township this past Saturday so thank you to our community and Miss Puckett Parks and Recreation please don't have a whole lot to share as this month's meeting um was canceled so we are keeping with the flow of pickleball courts are still moving forward and we still have wonderful rental facilities that are available if you would like to check them out go to cityoflaurence.org here we go policy you may have an update I do Dr harshberger and I were able to connect and we are very excited this is an exciting season for policy we um are actually we Dr harshburger is going to be meeting with our noela rep on May the 31st then that follows a meeting that we will have on June the 5th so that he and I can sit together and he can share the revisions we have about 40 policies that need some type of revisions as he shared some of them are just very small revisions others might be rather lengthy one in particular that he named and please feel free to chime in um this is this is us not me um is about bullying so the idea is that we will come to you on June the 12th with the first reading for as many policies as we can and then be able to get that over the hump at the second reading on June 26th however some of those may take a little bit more time because we don't want to rush them across the Finish Line we want to be really thoughtful to make sure that they have the impact that they're intended to for our students staff families and community members thank you do you have an update for the Indiana School Board Association or are we all good we're all good we're all good okay thank you Miss Lawrence thank you okay so now we get to move on to our action items and I just want to let everyone know that some of our action items will include some discussion so uh Mr Mr Smith the approval of the purpose proposed board resolution in agreement approving the land transfer Madam president members aboard Dr Smith I recommend the board approved the resolution and agreement approving the transfer of land from the Fort Harrison reuse authority to MSD LT as presented so moved second properly moved and seconded is there any discussion about that Lancaster okay all in favor aye aye any opposed you guys have it we have approved the the agreement um so now um that Mr Maya Mr miles the approval of lunch fees thank you once again Madam president members of the board Dr Smith at this time I recommend that the board approved the lunch fees for the 23-24 school year as submitted so moved second properly moved and seconded is there any discussion all in favor aye aye are you opposed the eyes have it we have approved lunch fees which in a time of major food inflation are staying even for our students and we also must mention that though they are staying um on an even Keel for students which is we're very grateful for we have several schools that are eligible for all the children to get free lunches which is a gift as well okay um Mr miles again the approvals on the bids for the lease of the one-to-one devices thank you madam president members of the board Dr Smith as we discussed earlier um we did receive those bids for the lease for our one-to-one devices and due to the um actions of the state house we are working with the Department of Ed to finalize exactly how this will impact our budget and what we will and will not be able to do from a textbook rental standpoint for the upcoming school year noting that we don't have all those answers just yet we think it's prudent that the board would table this recommendation at this time are there any objections to tabling okay we'll table that um uh Mr acoustic and Dr Brown approval of the proposed adjustment to the schoolwood calendar Madam president Dr Smith members of the board as the school year calendars obviously a time sensitive issue we tonight recommend that the board approved the adjustments of the 23 24 school year calendar as submitted so moved second discussion properly moved and seconded all in favor hi hi any opposed okay that we have that approved we will have discussion on item 4.6 I'm sure but at this point um I will ask Mr kuznick and Dr Brown to present the um the the proposal for the school board goals and we'll go through as I know there are some updates that you would like to discuss Mr kuznick would you like to start tonight we bring to you the 23-24 proposed School Board goals and we'll start off with Mr notarer on equity and anti-racism so um we can ask I can ask for a motion to approve and a second and after that we can have a discussion and after the discussion we can choose a path forward so do I have a motion to approve so moved we have a second second okay properly moved and seconded I know that the board does have discussion points so um I'll start at this end this time uh Miss Puckett questions about the board goals I can pass you miss Norman same uh Miss Lawrence well I was hoping I'd have a little I was hoping I'd have a little time to grab my uh notes so I just passed right on right I'll pass to miss Don and but I do have some issues well we'll all have a chance to discuss to speak to these so um thank you very much for opening this up for discussion as I shared with members of the board I do have a number of questions um about the board goals and um first and foremost I want to Express gratitude uh to the superintendent in the cabinet for bringing these to us however I stand firm in my belief that these are board goals and that these are goals that we as a board should be setting based on the data that we have received one of the major platforms that I ran on was closing the achievement Gap and when I spent time over the last several days looking again at the data of our students it is extremely alarming to see the trends that we are seeing for our black and brown students everything from the strength of diploma where we know that we have 38.4 percent plus 10.8 percent of our white students who are getting academic as well as academic and Technical Honors um whereas that number dwindles drastically for our students of color with only 15.2 percent of black students receiving an academic honors diploma and so when I look at this it is over and over again um very evident that as a system we have work to do um while I appreciate the goals and understand that they need to be rigorous I think that we have got to take a very critical stance at looking specifically at the outcomes for our brown and black students when we look at I read data we are seeing similar outcomes when we look at iLearn data the lat the I learned data that I pulled shows that we have fewer than I believe it's 10 percent of our students who are students black students who are passing both Ela and math and if we are only incrementally incrementally improving that by a small percentage over a course of a year then we are going to continually be behind in failing our most vulnerable students I respectfully ask that we look at the data we specifically look at the outcomes for our brown and black students so that we can specifically target areas where we are seeing what is working in our district and we can potentially work to model and replicate that work that is happening because we do know that there are pockets in this District where brown and black children are performing close or near to their wet counterparts but that is not happening in all of our buildings I also would respectfully ask that there is alignment between the Strategic plan and our Equity one glaring area that I saw in our um our board goals is in that both our Equity goals as well as our strategic plan there are eight different indicators on students on the culture in climate and SEL after leaving a global pandemic I believe it is imperative that we have a goal that is centered around mental health that is centered around SEL and specifically centered around culture and climate we have far too many students who are black and brown that are being removed from classes and I would like to see that we have a goal surrounding how we are supporting those students share Ms Dunn's concerns that she raised but my expertise is not in education my expertise is in business which is one of the pieces that I ran on and so moving the academic achievement piece aside I do have one question that make make couch some of my additional questions related specifically to the Strategic plan goal that was um that was introduced in our board goals is the intention that the goals from the Strategic plan this strategic plan that those be specifically outlined in the that those are then what the board will achieve throughout the year it was a little bit of confusion on my part and this is just as a novice board member whether or not the equity work the Strategic plan work the board goals how all of those align because in my purview I would my preference would be to take all of the goals that we have for a specific given Academic Year and use that as our as an outline for our Board of goals with some additional things added as the board sees fit so that's the first question that I have how how are these different right and I would say 100 percent what's your strategic plan is for three years there are some obviously you're going to change those with industry Jesus point because your board goal is going to change or they should but can I give an example um Miss Lawrence of what I think that you're talking about and so when we look at for example in our strategic plan um it is stating that by June 2024 an average of 80 of all third grade students will have uh will be proficient on the I read three assessment however in our board goals it has been included to put been enrolled in LT for three years however that's not in the Strategic plan and so I think that that is a prime example of what Ms Lawrence is talking about that there is some misalignment between what we're seeing in our strategic plan and what are in our board goals because that language is not in our strategic plan but it's in the board goals that we're only looking at students for three years that have been enrolled so there seems to be some misalignment there in addition there are some things that are included in the Strategic plan but aren't specifically called out in the board goals for example culture as Ms Dunn referenced previously there was also technology um as as part of that um so those those two things were of concern I also wanted to call out the importance of attracting and retaining teachers um you know when I in this is very fresh in my mind because we just completed it at my company um we do every year uh twice annually uh an upward feedback mechanism similar to what the Panorama survey is for our students as well as our um as well as our community members I did note that the Panorama company also offers a teacher and classified staff survey through the exact same administrator for our our community surveys my preference would be that we also allow for our teachers to take part in those surveys so that we can have a keen understanding and a data-driven understanding for the um for the culture in each individual building in addition the Strategic plan also calls out exit interviews it's a lagging indicator for problems that's why I'd like to see the Panorama data so that we have a leading indicator the lagging indicator though I would still like to see codified and forward goals because exit interviews can create a real key learning point for any company who is seeking to make changes um and then as it relates to um the culture piece mental health and SEL and I don't mean to get ahead of you Crystal because I know this is something you're very passionate about as well but um but we did not specifically call out in our board goals anything around mental health specifically uh um around uh um encouraging our um our mental health to be part of the curriculum in addition attendance was also called out in the Strategic plan we have no mention of it in our board goals the Strategic plan calls for us by next year to have our attendance back to pre-pandemic levels these are all things that I would like to see in the plan moving forward great points thank you for bringing those up to see the the SEO components because that's like the foundation to anything like it's gonna I see within my household I see it in other areas so I think that's important to a lot of yeah no I I agree on the mental health seems to be the theme across the board but just contemplating what's measurable for us or what indicators to look at in this that's what it must in may I ask another um question because one of the other things that was of concern are some of these are not smart goals so when we're talking about people in particular um it doesn't look like we have Baseline data and one of the things that really Drew my attention in looking again at our Equity work is not just the retention um but B 0.2 speaks specifically to it is one matter to recruit diverse candidates it is another matter entirely to ensure the environment is conducive to retaining them and so I would really like to dive into the retention data and so what is that retention data how many bilingual staff do we have in each department how have they increased what is the retention too much to Marta's question what are the exit interviews telling us potentially if people are leaving why they're leaving are there Trends um because I think that'll tell us a lot about what we need to do as a district to make sure that we are not only recruiting but retaining the best and brightest because our students our staff our community deserves that I would also add the classified staff I feel very passionately about that they should also be included because unlike our teachers our classified staff do not have representation in the Lea for example and for us to be able to understand what um you know what their uh what their feelings are is critically important not just to make sure that we're doing right by them but also to understand what key differentiators our district can offer them to keep them and retain them in order to create stability within our district greater stability within our District one other thing that I wanted to mention is are operations in finance in our strategic plan we talk about how these goals they seem again to be misaligned because our strategic plan talks about meet or exceed board Finance goals but our board Finance goal is all taxing funds will maintain a positive balance what are we talking about with a positive balance especially as we're getting ready to negotiate what type of positive balance are we talking about are we talking about a dollar are we talking about a hundred thousand dollars I think it is very important again that our goals are very clear in their smart goals that we have a deadline that they're measurable that they're timely that we know exactly what we are talking about because just maintaining a positive balance is not really giving us a lot of information again one of the other things that I talked to you about this President Mustin is that I would really like us to see how we are aligning our board goals with how we are spending our money so that we can directly speak to our constituent that these are the goals that we hold true and dear to our hearts student performance being of the utmost importance and this is the money that we're putting towards this these are the areas in which we're putting towards student outcomes and student performance so that our constituents can very clearly see the alignment between our priorities and how we spend our money I thank you all for your great comments um I I think that it would be helpful if we want to amend the goals to be able to have an amendment in mind to amend the goals and I would say about the positive balance I think a positive balance means anything that keeps us in the black um that that's my understanding of a positive balance and forgive me if I'm mistaken but the positive balance is just not being in the red right is that how it reads okay and how would you like it to read I highly recommend I I hear our board members our new board members are bringing some really critical points to the table that I think are going to require a little bit of time that we talk uh with the various Division and well as well as the superintendent because I hear what Miss Dunn is saying I think it's just a matter of understanding how that works because we don't really have a lot of flexibility in the taxing funds that's what you see with the overall budget that Matt is presenting so I think it's more of a conversation to better understand that um so I think we need to have some time to talk about that okay I don't think it's uncommon board members in particular new board members to see that districts strategic plan board goals matter of fact some of my colleagues don't even after the pennies they're not going to do a strategic plan we have always been driven by a plan uh this will be our second major strategic plan in the last decade uh so it's not uncommon to see that they do do some overlapping okay so I think we need a little bit of time to talk about those and what that really means uh Miss Dunn brought up you have a lot of you you data today you are data data and I see my academic team over there really have not had a chance to talk we need to be able to sit down and talk with you okay um if I'm hearing all that in the back of my mind I'm thinking run like when you like as as far as a leadership lens is like it's a lot I think we need time I thank you for being for putting that out there and I think our team also for like that has to be processed and really chewed on so so that needs to be processed so I think for the record I don't think there's ever been a time since I've been here for 10 years that we've not talked about student achievement as it relates to all students that we serve and I think Miss Dunn is coming and sharing a passion that I think is a passion of everybody in this room I think we're all in agreement that it's a passion for all of us so I've Madam president I'm not um you're the boss here you run it you run it you run your agenda and this is on the agenda it does not have to be point of clarification voted on tonight correct but again if emphasizing to the community this is our board goals for next school year so just so for the record we all know that we want to have these by July 1st right so we'll need to pass these in our June meeting um if at all possible so what I would like to do is just outline some of the changes that we're hoping for and if I so let forgive me but let me try to see if I got got some of these correct we want to make sure that what is stated in the Strategic plan matches what's stated in the board goals yes um so if it's about achievement and about um you know I I hear what you're saying about um about 80 percent for our three-year students but if the Strategic plan is looking at three years they might be saying 80 percent of all students in three years so just clarify this so so it has specifically states by 2024 but it does not have three years there's the exact same wording in the Strategic plan but in our board goals it says only inclusive of students who have been in the township for three years right I'm just saying that the I'm just saying that the Strategic plan I'm not talking about having been in the township for three years but the Strategic plan looks out to the end of to the end of the three-year period of time so at the end of the three-year period of time we may be looking at 80 of all students maybe I don't know so we need to clarify it no it States in the Strategic plan it very clearly goes over um the section on improved K-12 literacy achievement it says it has certain metrics and the uh uh third from the bottom states by June 2024 80 percent of third grade students will pass the I read assessments with accelerated growth okay so that's next year but in our in our board goals right it says those that have been with us and enrolled in LT schools for okay years okay so we need to make sure that there's alignment of what our strategic or whatever our strategic plan says and what our board goals okay can I have two do we have time is it possible like for our next session because I want to sit down and like really chew and dig into like can't we have like an extended session to where we're sitting down and actually biting through when chewing through this I would feel more comfortable because I hear everything that you're saying I'm a processor it's a lot I want to see it I want to chew on it I want to and take it all in I think it may be better and we can't do this in an executive session that's not possible because that would um be against the open door law so because it's an action item that we'll be taking the only thing we can do in executive session are Personnel matters that are we can't discuss in public and those times when we need training and so it's not we need to have this discussion in public so far so let's continue this discussion for a little while tonight until we know what we want to change or I think is there a way there because this is the first time it's being introduced to the cabinet members and the superintendent that we can take in Miss Dunn's points all of your points yes yes work on it and then we can come back for further discussion because we we need to we need to be able to absorb all that I don't know if we could schedule a work session in June well we've got work sessions already scheduled in June we do June 12th is a work session okay but I think from the perspective it's done bringing some very specific and then come back again episode of the month to pass to pass the board I'm happy to share in more of a detailed fashion literally yes yes because again I just touched on a little bit graduation rate is another when we look at our graduation rate while I appreciate the increase at least five percent of every racial subgroup we still have students um especially students of color who are graduating on waivers who are graduating on a general diploma um increasing five percent we are we are going to still have a ginormous achievement Gap if we do not increase what we are expecting of our students and I do believe that they can achieve yeah I agree I think just to give them time to process so that way we can see what's actually I think we can name those things that um two years of work we did on the equity work addresses those things um addresses them pretty specifically so we just have to make sure that our Equity work our strategic work and our board goals are in perfect alignment I think and and that everything is um attainable and everything is relevant yeah yeah and right yeah they need to have time to process they're on the front lines so to be able to hear this process it and so we're taking a little bit different approach because the cabinet members need to absorb so Marta brings questions about surveys which involve our teachers we have processes to go through with that so I think the people that are key at board if you would give me your specific areas that we can do a little bit of massaging of it and bring it back before the 12th so that we can have more open discuss because there's a lot of questions everyone's got it I think that would help us out because we need to gather all that so we are in agreement we will table this discussion and I do want just historically just that um we didn't even we didn't have a strategic plan when I came on the board we did not have board goals when I came on this board and we worked diligently to come up with this template of board goals to make sure they reflected um our hopes and dreams for our students and what we could do for them and that they were they would be smart goals they have evolved over time and maybe not with a careful enough alignment and maybe with not enough Focus um for for instance on waivers Etc and how how that works throughout our different populations our different demographic populations for instance and so I think that we can I think we can make our board goals a little more specific I do want you all to know as well historically speaking um I was uncomfortable with this in the beginning in those sitting here will remember I was a bit uncomfortable with this when we started this work because we asked the the administration to help us understand because this information comes up from our teachers our teachers know our students they do and Lawrence Township our teachers know our students and this information comes to our our building leaders and that information comes to our Administration so we know our students we know some of the capabilities we know some of the issues we certainly know the the problems and the issues with achievement and with retention Etc um but we asked that the administration create goals that were attainable and rigorous and that's a fine line rigorous and attainable yeah absolutely um and in relying on the administration to do this the process has seemed to me at the time and can I know seem to all of you to be Administration driven as opposed to board driven but I wanted you to know historically how we came to this process um and um I think that this is time a good time to just to just re-establish um how specific we want these board goals to be and to remember that we sit we sit at thirty thousand feet we and we're not trying to manage the district we're just trying to give Vision to the district so if we get too specific in our board goals that puts us in the chair of the manager and Dr Smith and his administration will manage the district um and our board goals will be what our board goals are regardless of budget and it is up to Dr Smith and the administration Mr Moz I'm looking right at you to find a way to fund our board goals to make our board goals a reality and in terms of budget we do know from the state that will our our budget will increase by about five percent next year and will increase an additional two percent the following year so we do have an idea and we expect our population our ADM to remain pretty stable so there are things we do know but we won't do our actual budgeting until the fall and I just want to clarify that I wasn't saying that we would not have the funds to be able to implement what I would like to see is what a lot of districts are moving to even the district that I serve is that our strategic priorities are aligned to we align every strategic priority with a budget item so that we can see and we can track return on investment so we as a district can show our fiscal responsibility to our constituents if we are spending X number of dollars on a program we can say that that's aligned to board goals that this these are the outcomes that we're that we're getting because especially as property taxes begin to increase I think it's incumbent upon us um as cons as we are elected by our constituents to be very very transparent about how our board goals are aligned with the monies that we are spending in our district so it's not that we don't have the money it's aligning budget items to our goals to our priorities to be able to say to our constituents we are spending 500 million dollars on X Y or Z and this is why can I ask really quick it's the bookmarks and I'll go to Dr Smith So based off of what Mrs Dunn is saying um can just for public knowledge do we have something that mirrors that now that just may look differently than what she's saying just so that we're all yeah I I was done I'd have to look at what others are doing um this is a culture issue we are deeply entrenched in you know how we do our budget uh that would be something new for my cabinet member should I that's what I want to that's so we we would have to spend some time with that okay we I currently don't we look at the bottom line the budget as a whole okay and so whatever you ask of me I have the responsibility of making it happen with our overall budget okay so we don't at this level allocate here how many dollars are being spent by each division that's done internally by myself and along with Mr miles and then we allocate that to each of the division so that we can function so it's a little bit different approach is what you're bringing to the table culture it's nothing we can talk about it I think it's just more of a really a behind the scenes conversation from the individual board members about that because that is a change and I would like to and I've been around for a while I've worked in a few other districts and so you know all districts are a little bit different yeah I want to ask too like is that something that is it something that's an issue to where people are complaining about because here's the thing if we are looking at all of the things that are mentioned um is this something that is an issue right now concerning how our budget is presented publicly is it NFS out of the board I mean Miss muscle was correct we didn't have this when I came on we didn't have a a goal setting our budget and how much money we want to maintain we were coming out of a very difficult time in which we were making budget reductions and close to school so if there is a change then the board you guys need to decide on if how you want to do that and let me be clear too like it's not like mine isn't like I'm not opposing what you're saying but like my Lane my thing is social justice and so cultures are big to me and so it's from that lens on is this something that is is it a culture just of how we are doing this or is this something so that's kind of My Lens too just just kind of bouncing back and forth because if it's not broken don't fix it or is it something that is of immediate urgency especially as we're talking about social emotional and different things is this something that we can kind of is it affecting the functions of our Township and if not is that something that we can possibly move to the side a little so that we are allowing for yep I'm gonna drop the mic so I think one of the reasons that I'm asking for that is having um first of all having the opportunity to engage with a number of school board members over the course of the last um several months from across the country and seeing what other folks do and also how it has helped one of the things that I just want to applaud you um superintendent Smith as well as members of the board is how you are consistently advocating for our students as especially as we just ended this budget season we know that we did not get the dollars that we really hoped for and so the reason that I'm asking this is I think it tells more of a story to not only our constituents but also to those individuals that are making decisions for us to be able to very clearly state that our district is spending X number of dollars on social emotional learning that we're spending X number of dollars so we can tell a story and tell them that it may not be sufficient enough right because we know that um that there are real needs and um and so that's where it's coming from not as a place of distrusting yeah I just want to make sure that's very clear is it's more of being able to really tell a tale of how we are just really because without a doubt we are doing amazing work in terms of our balanced budget but I also think that there's a lot of stories to be told um that maybe folks just need um a more direct like us connecting the dots for them so that was that's one of the reasons behind that let us spend some time talking about that and we've been very blessed was done and board board of board members because there are only three districts in Marion County that don't have operating referendums in rule one so we we've done something right over the years we just I think what Miss Dunn is talking is very much more detailed so we gotta we got to figure out if that's the direction you want to go how to do that okay uh because we've been very blessed and so I don't see it this year Mr miles and I come into the boarding requesting that we seek an operating referendum at least we could say that for this upcoming 23 and then for the 24 budget I don't think that's going to be on our agenda task for operating referendum and so that in itself will give you guys a gold star because that is not the case in our state right now we are very blessed financially in Lawrence Township very blessed a lot of discussion let me add that um I appreciate uh Miss Lawrence's request for some leading indicators or teacher surveys and I want to make clear that with any surveys for teachers and classified I don't want any specific knowledge of what building they're in I do not want to call out any building leader that's not what this is about it would be strictly a General survey of all of our teachers anonymize data completely anonymized data nonetheless yes yes so absolutely I don't want it building to building I don't want to know you know how how the teachers feel at this school compared to the I don't want to know any of that but some leading indicators for retention would be I think helpful um and I I would say that as for very specific I'm putting a monetary number on our goals um her dad's so much work to the administration that it would cost us more to do that and may cost us a couple teacher salaries because it may cost us um I may not it may not let's find out but it could cost us a couple teacher salaries in additional business office Personnel that was my concern that that that that would be the only thing that I would be concerned on not even just for that but with the list that we're giving somebody has to do it with us concerned about social emotional learning everything else somebody has to do it it's a Manpower absolutely I don't take that away but just those parallels it's a just a juxtaposition of the need for both of these on being cognizant too of what does this really look like in like Manpower what does it look like in time because time is a form of time is equity um so what does it look like with time what does it look like with money I'm not against it but I'm also I will always be that opposite side to what does this look like right so we would want to know what that's going to look like if we were going to implement it right okay yeah and um the other thing I would say is that if we have a board goal and we're not meeting that board goal um we need to tell the administration um we're not meeting that goal and we're serious about this goal and they will have to figure out how to allocate the funds to make it happen you know these are our board goals and we're not kidding um and so um the Administration has to make it happen and you know I we have been so fortunate in this Township to have a magnificent level of trust between the administration and the board both ways and trust that the administration will reallocate those funds as necessary to move these board goals so um I I'm not saying we can't do that but again let's find out what it would cost to do that um what's the cost of doing that and is as you said time is equity yeah I don't I don't want to lose leadership for so just make sure that's doable that it's in a like what does this look out all the questions asked what does it look like with time meant like actual attainable help yeah and we've had trouble with attaining all of our our board goals um in the last couple of years we've everybody has the pandemic kind of stepped in but I think we're on on our path to achieve those again so we'll connect Madam president I'll connect with each of the board members that have their points as well as other cabinet members to help me fully understand thank you guys everyone present um open your eyes get the toothpicks we um it was important for us to get through that I appreciate the time it took you know and and what it's going to cost in in manpower to work through this um okay so we'll agree board to table that till next meeting we'll have a discussion another discussion in our next work session and then we'll plan to approve them in our um June meeting does that sound acceptable just some time okay and you know my I know you we all we all have very strong goals and one of my goals is to make sure that those board goals get out before July 1st so thank you for that we're on to certain approvals of the board minutes the Personnel reports Etc Madam president I move that we treat action items 4.7 through 4.13 as consent agenda second okay um all in favor of treating Moses as a consent agenda I I any opposed okay we can treat them as a consent agenda we have a motion to pass the consent agenda I move approval of the consent agenda I mean Lord second so properly moved and seconded um all in favor of passing the consent agenda hi our past the consent agenda is passed so that takes us board and we have had a great meeting that takes us to comments so all right uh I will start in the middle Miss Norman all right I just wanted to wish everyone a a happy summer and for those who are serving in jumpstart thank you uh for making that happen and then Miss Brown is with us I wanted to remind the public about the summer servings I believe that information is on our website ltschools.org I just want to similarly wish everyone a Happy uh a happy summer vacation break however you plan to choose it or to use it may it be in a way that is restorative and uh ready for the new year at hand I think we're all ready to go home so I will just uh echo my fellow board members comments about the Summers Miss bucket and in Mental Health Awareness Month Devin crumpton our graduate from Lawrence Central 2019 has a brand called Mind Over Matter his quote is that he started this brand in January of 2022 as a reminder that he needed himself that it's not about the obstacles before you but the willpower to overcome them so as this month I just want to celebrate that as we celebrate academic Excellence I also want to acknowledge those kids that getting out of bed and making it to school admin that get up and go into the into the buildings um for those that are dealing with trauma um thank you we see you and I held space for you so during the summer I'm just prayers for just a peaceful mental awareness of Wellness awareness summer so there we go I'll just leave that there but Devin crumpton Mind Over Matter nice I would like to say that it was a joy to be with our retirees and um I think uh it was it was not a large room full of people but it represented years of service in that room outstanding um outstanding some of our you know our most beloved teachers are of the age to retire and we had to say goodbye to a few as we said said farewell for now to coach Gooden tonight so thank you for all of our retirees again Echo what our board has said about the summer and um just a personal point the Mustin family um um I will not be at our end of year celebration which saddens me greatly because it's such an important day and I hope all of you can attend because it's a lovely celebration um counting on you Amy you got this because our daughter is being married at the end of the at the end of the week and I will be attending wedding festivities and I would like to say that um both of our daughters um have or will be marrying outside of their culture and I think that speaks volumes to what they have learned and how they live in Lawrence Township and I want to thank Lawrence Township for making our family so open so thank you um Dr Smith very quickly Madam president members of the board reminding you Friday is our end of year celebration we will meet promptly at nine o'clock the program will start promptly at nine o'clock at Lawrence Central High School is that correct Carla Johnson will be there for that so big announcements will take place including our top uh leaders in each of our areas from administrator to teach of Performance for the Board of Education as you will be issuing diplomas to all of our graduates Mr kuznick where we inch and close to 1200 diplomas pretty close so it will be a full performance from all of us to make that happen so seventh and 8th graduation Fairgrounds thank you madam president thank you wonderful do I have a motion to adjourn so moved second second we are adjourned great world can be social media gaming platforms or even new inventive Technologies like AI and these might be great resources to accomplish goals however it cannot replace real people and real life events we would not want to be doing this virtually some of the relationships that you have you've created here with your classmates and you are supported by your family members and friends here that came to see you graduate and I'm hoping that even if things change in the next couple of months and years for you with the people that are in that continue to find real life connection points and Forge New relationships my second point is try something new even when you don't know the outcome tomorrow you might be stepping out into the workforce maybe you have plans to continue your education in college maybe you're going to continue a skill in the military or in the trades and getting Hands-On training in a specific field in each of your tomorrows push yourself something challenging that you found as a freshman would be very easy for you today and it would seem simple likewise after you start your next challenging Adventure you soon will find that you can conquer it and it won't be impossible faculty staff and the graduating class of 2023 for those of you that don't know me my name is Kalia Enriquez to my fellow graduates it has been an absolute privilege to serve as your student body president before I present my remarks let me say thank you for a long time I've looked forward to being able to thank you all adequately some of the most important people in our lives are in this building so on this special day and in an eloquent way I shall express my gratitude to my family this accomplishment has almost every do everything to do with them and nothing to do with me despite our difficulties I was always brought up by so much love they're the reason for my tough skin and my soft heart to the humans who continuously choose a profession that puts countless people before them you are so much more than the title of a teacher four months ago oop I skipped a sentence as many of you guys know I lost a parent this year four months ago my anxiety told me I would not be standing up on the stage four months ago I could barely make it to school I can say that without a doubt my teachers were the ones who helped save my life to miss [Applause] to miss Pavlick Miss Zions Miss Rogers Mr Peterson and Mr pushala thank you you deserve way more than to be talked about at a graduation and to the beautiful group of girls I have spent the last seven years surrounding myself with you have been one of my biggest blessings God knew I needed a village and you guys are the heart of it so so to all of you before me thank you to my fellow graduates I hope the fact that I am giving thanks first and foremost is an indication to you of the importance in the lives you could potentially change around you as cliche as it may sound you are ultimately defined not by what you do but how you do it as we're all reflecting on these past four years we come back to the idea that we do not have forever you may not even have next week or next month we often forget this timeline is completely out of our control so with that in this next chapter in our lives and for the rest of our lives I hope you truly take the time to figure out what moves you what encourages your soul what you deeply crave from life and I hope you have the courage to go and Chase that I hope seeing seasons of being misunderstood and unappreciated do not cause you to see yourself Through The Eyes of those who cannot see your value but rather let it encourage you surround yourself with people who are doing the work to heal and grow surround yourself with those who want to talk to you about ideas rather than other people if high school has taught us anything it's that time is in essence what you do with it will be your story this new chapter in our lives is no longer a distant memory we are here and we did it now give yourself permission to be all that you are congratulations class of 23 all glory to God I'll see you at the reunion [Applause] during the recessional we ask that all guests remain in their seats at the conclusion of the recessional guests should exit the facility using the north doors located at the end of the building all graduates must must be met outside of the okay okay thank you and now we have Mr Enos with our national anthem um [Music] foreign [Music] [Applause] [Music] won't you know [Music] birthday [Music] shares [Music] [Applause] good morning and welcome my name is Miss croskov I am one of the assistant principals here at Bob mckeevery secondary campus I'd like to welcome families students our governing our governing board and my esteemed colleagues and our superintendent Mr Diaz first of all I'd like to thank all of you for the opportunity that you have given us to work with your students and be a part of their life in their day-to-day life it is with great pleasure that we come together today to celebrate our eighth grade as they transition into high school with the celebration and promotion they will be embarking on a New Journey and we wish them the best thank you with that I would like to introduce our principal Miss Sudan [Applause] dyslexia Tanya Sudan and I am the bless I am blessed to serve as a principal here at BBQ Reese Middle School welcome to the class of 2020 class of 2027's eighth grade promotion I am so happy to see so many faces in the crowd as we celebrate yet another milestone in this class's educational Journey before I begin I would like to acknowledge our dignitaries that have joined us this morning our superintendent Ruben Diaz [Applause] our governing board for President Juan gundia and board members LMA Greasewood Sylvia Hendricks and Kathleen Vance and our guest our keynote speaker Miss Gabriela casadas Kelly and our administrators and teachers from the primary and intermediate campuses that joined us today [Applause] I'm going to turn this way to the class to the class of 2027 today we have all gathered here to celebrate you as you transition from middle to school to high school this is a significant transition in that you will have more choices in how you earn your high school diploma and how you will be able to dive deeper into the areas of Interest but most importantly every class counts in high school you will have to pass the class to earn the credit and you will need 22 credits in all the right areas to get to the next Milestone High School graduation it is also a time where you start to become serious about your plans after graduation because these next four years can help you prepare you for Success after you graduate as Walt Disney once said all their dreams can come true if we have the courage to pursue them dream big and work hard and I have no doubt that you will succeed in whatever you put your mind to Having the courage to pursue your dreams means that you cannot give up when it gets hard or when you feel discouraged or even because you do not like the work that you have to put in it means pushing through even when you don't want to because it is a part of the journey that will help you achieve your dream when those moments happen always always focus on the goals that you have for yourself Having the courage to pursue your dreams means taking risks trying new things and stepping out of your comfort zones you won't always know if something is for you or isn't for you unless you give it a shot you may surprise yourself and learn a new hobby skill or area of Interest use this time to explore every opportunity so you can begin to develop solid plans for your future and lastly Having the courage to pursue your dreams means that you must stand firm in the face of adversity when life gets tough and throws challenges and obstacles your way it means standing your ground in the face of naysayers who will discourage you put you down or stand in the way of your dreams always remember if you believe you can you will to achieve your goals you must believe in yourself first then you have to put in the work you will fail and you will make mistakes but those will only make you stronger and wiser so you'll have to get back up and keep moving forward this is how you get to where you want to go believe that you are capable enough worthy enough deserving enough to achieve everything you want to achieve in the life that you want to live those that love you and support you will encourage you to achieve those dreams they will push you to do better and be better even when you don't want to hear it and they will lift you up when times are hard because they too have endured and overcome challenges they will lend a helping hand to to help whenever they can because somewhere along the way they had help from one of their supporters surround yourself with those people thank those people when you have the chance but most importantly be that person to those closest to you so always remember it starts with you believe in your ability believe that you deserve love happiness and acceptance believe in your strength and believe that you can achieve great things and always believe in yourself I am so proud of all that you have accomplished thus far and I'm excited to see what you accomplish in the future of course I could not do this job alone so I'd like to thank Miss ansay Miss cross Cobb Mr Russell Miss Haley and Miss for Hernandez for their help and support and to our wonderful eighth grade teachers Miss Dalton Mr Lada Mr Jones Miss Aaron Martin and Miss covia Martin for guiding you to this moment and to all of our teachers and support staff here at the secondary campus that have contributed to your educational experience congratulations class of 2027.

Bright Stars [Applause] [Music] was still there oh say does [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] thank you [Applause] please be seated good morning students family members Dr Stewart Mrs Lott somewhere up there and board members I want to welcome you here today and thank you for being here to honor our amazing students students you're at the end of one voyage and getting ready to start another voyage I want to share with you three pieces of advice first leave all the drama behind you nothing is worth it second get involved do as many things as you can but not so many that it stresses you out third remember your years at Fox Creek remember your teachers remember all the other people who are there to help you once a falcon always a falcon we are all here to celebrate these young students um so I'm going to wrap up my speech and get on to what we're here for first let me welcome student council president Valeria Zambrano [Applause] good morning I'm Valeria Zambrano a student council president you've probably seen me around campus originally when I sat down to write this speech I was at a loss for words and if you know me that rarely happens I just kept on thinking why does Fox Creek even matter most of us are really excited for what's ahead in high school so it may seem pointless to look to the past when all you can think about is moving on but this year was an interesting one so I encourage you to look back at least for a little bit I'll be honest it wasn't all sunshines and rainbows there were arguments fights and drama but in the mix there were amazing Parts too and those moments of failure we have to thank all those who stuck by our sides long enough to see us succeed so thank you thank you to the family members who drove us to school every day to those who made sure our grades were on track those who are in the stands right now and those who couldn't be here thank you to the teachers for always answering our question questions making sure we understood the content and always pushing us forward even though sometimes we didn't like it without parents and teachers checking up on everything we did a lot of us wouldn't be sitting here today but the peak of this year was definitely the friends we spent it with and the relationships we made we've had some great moments basketball games when all hope was lost and we finally took the lead in the third quarter sitting outside for what felt like an eternity at basketball Science Olympiad and softball tournaments getting sunburned in the process and still placing in the top five they're no the nervous moments preparing before big concerts njhs ceremonies and even speeches those are the big themes of school pride and what it means to be a falcon but what I appreciated more than that was the small things that happened every day whether it was laughing so hard we started to cry calling each other up because man I don't know how to do this I excel sharing funny stories about the crazy things teachers say or just spending time in each other's company y'all did a great job at all of it and all of these huge moments good and bad there was always a sense of caring and compassion towards one another so I found the answer to the question why does Fox Creek matter it's not the answer that your teachers may have told you to get you to pay attention in class saying that y equals MX plus b is really important in life it's simpler the reason why Fox Creek matters is because without it we would have no stories to tell and recollect on we wouldn't have built such wonderful friendships and we wouldn't have learned the lessons that we did on Integrity kindness and character so as we leave today newly promoted think about the greatest moments this year and the takeaway if we are able to bring these ideas of compassion friendship and selflessness to high school I know the next four years will be extraordinary thank you and congratulations [Applause] now help me welcome recent Mojave grad and student body president Erica cabato [Applause] good morning students teachers and parents it is my honor to stand before you today to celebrate the incredible achievements of our eighth grade class as they prepare to move up to high school before anything else I would like to introduce myself I'm Eric cabato and I recently just graduated high school I've had my fair share of experiences in those four years you're all about to partake in you may be scared anxious excited or not even care at all but regardless today marks an important milestone in your academic Journey as you prepare to move up to high school as you stand here ready to take the next step forward it's important to reflect on all the hard work and dedication that has brought you here Middle School was an experience like no other those years have brought you up and became an integral part of your life you've grown up to people that you are today a little spoiler for your journey it will grow so much more than you already have the high school will be a new and exciting challenge filled with opportunities to learn grow and succeed there are plenty of new opportunities that are available and don't be afraid to take advantage of them club sports and your staff want to help you to become better try out something new and be active in school the only way to get in your way of becoming successful is the fear of failure I've met a lot of people through the four years and some of them are able to assist me in the careers that I want to go to some of them can answer the questions that are answered and some of them even became my lifelong friends you see school isn't about attending classes and including completing assignments it's also about exploring your interests discovering your passions and building relationship with others and to do that you need to take advantage of the resources and opportunities that are available to you you'll be exposed to new ideas new people and new experiences that will help you shape your future but this new challenge comes with responsibility you will need to work harder study longer and manage your time more efficiently you'll need to make important decisions about your academic and personal life and you will need to take ownership of your education and your future from my personal experience I've learned to take responsibility for myself no one else will be there for you as much as you well it is important to take this time and build new relationships it is necessary to build a better relationship with yourself learn what you're comfortable with push yourself harder and as well as knowing when to give up I've had my experience of being active around school I'm president of two of the major clubs on campus interact and student council and it is a lot to juggle and of course really mentally challenging as much as I would like to tell you to never give up on something sometimes there are more important things that you should focus on rather than becoming the best student or the most involved person in school it has told me to find advice like this but is true and necessary don't be ashamed to seek help when you need it and there are a lot of people that are willing to help you as hard as it sounds so my so my message for you today is simple be confident be curious and be committed believe in yourself and your abilities ask questions and stay focused on your goals and remember success is not about what you achieve but also the person you become along the way as you prepare to leave middle school behind I want you to know that you have our support and encouragement we are proud of all of you that have accomplished and we look forward to see what you will achieve in the years to come As you move forward remember to stay true to yourself and your values remember to stay focused on your goals and even when the road ahead becomes long and challenging remember to lean on each other for support and encouragement it was an honor to stand before you today thank you and congratulations to you all [Applause] will the first row of students please rise and come to the stage Vance black Forest call this meeting of the board and of Education in order Sydney would you please call the roll here present black here present next I would invite Aaron to lead us in the pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands one nation under God indivisible with liberty and justice for all are there any items to be adjusted removed from the agenda I have two minor adjustments to the consent agenda the consent agenda is accurate but on it did change from Friday so since Friday we added one FMLA and we added a set of minutes because you had a board meeting on Friday and Cindy was able to get those meetings prepared for or the minutes prepared for you so those are in there um she got those in there yesterday and the rule is with minutes you're supposed to approve minutes this is just fun fact um when you have a meeting you write up the minutes and then you have to approve them at the next regular meeting and then they have to be posted on our website within 10 days of that but with board docs they're posted automatically it's just a little side note a little history lesson on open meetings Act anything else nope okay uh Holly any public comment no public comment all right well seeing as none we will move on to our BPS partners Todd I know you're not used to us moving this fast keep it going it's a new ship up here Todd pressure's on good evening members of the board tonight I would like to take just a brief moment of our meeting time and for Rob and Raquel and Danielle you may not be aware but the word brief and Communications used in conjunction with me don't usually go hand in hand but that will be the case tonight first off I want to give all of our district district retirees one last shout out which is three days left of the school year your dedication to the students of Batavia is what makes you all great and in turn will make you greatly missed next year let the adventure that is the next phase of your life begin to our staff I know that there are days that seem like they will never end but in spite of that here we are down to the last three days of the school year it just seems like last week it was spring break and now we are almost to Z in the letter countdown I know we're told this over and over but I want you all to take this to heart this summer take time for yourself take time for your family and take time to do something that brings you peace or brings you Joy indulge in The Simple Pleasures that life brings your way but also take a moment while you can to reflect on the successes of your year whether little or large we know your bucket is running pretty close to empty with all that you've given to your profession your colleagues and your students and their families now is the time to restock for the 23-24 school year have a great summer to all of our BPS staff and come back in August ready to rock another year finally I would like to recognize our students both those who will be returning next fall and especially those that will be crossing the stage at NIU tomorrow night your teachers thank you for your hard work your perseverance and your dedication to making sure that you are leaving here on Thursday with a little more knowledge than you had at the beginning of the year more compassion not only for your fellow students but for all the people in your life and more desire to see what the next steps hold for you and I mean that's Holly to bring up a picture for you all to take a look at so as this picture's coming up um I had the great honor of being invited by my fifth grade class that is graduating tomorrow night to come back to hooverwood as they reconnected with their Elementary School and those who are part of their Journey for some of those kids I have not seen them since their last day of school with me seven years ago others I see quite regularly but nevertheless I want to tell not only the seniors who are partified us that are part of this Photograph that I will cherish forever but to all the graduating seniors no matter what elementary school you went to or who your teachers there were and then to your teachers at Rotolo and finally the ones you spent the last four years with at BHS we are all so incredibly proud of you and the adults that you become please know that there will always be a little part of you written into the fabric of our lives and we hope that you'll take a little piece of us with you as well wherever that road leads you next be proud of your accomplishments be diligent in your Pursuits that you will undertake next in your life and for my kiddos in that picture and five us I hope you remember a poem I gave you on our last day of school together it talks about how some people measure success in terms of monetary gains or inanimate possessions but for you I hope that you measure success not by the money in your bank account or the car you may end up driving I want you to measure it by the friends you have the friends you will make and treating everyone you meet whether family or stranger with kindness and empathy being clean of heart and Broad of mind and to the stranger kind is how that poem ended when I gave it to you seven years ago I hope you all remember this as you walk across that stage tomorrow night and set forth into the world as a Batavia graduate so congratulations to all the graduating seniors go out and do great things send it over to Lisa first yeah yeah um we have so so many committees in this district and these are the this is an opportunity for all staff to come together make decisions have voice and what we do at this part of the meeting is we have each board member who is um one at a time um one board member gets assigned for committee as an observer and this is the time of the meeting that you would normally share out and part of the committee's charge when they finish a meeting jointly the Committees sometimes they run out of time but jointly they're supposed to write a statement that's the summary of that meeting and we do Post those for all the staff and um so that's usually what you would share at this part of the meeting Craig did contact you and give you as the president he assigns you to your committees so he's already contacted you and made those assignments for next year so at this point you probably don't have any updates to share because things ramp down real quick and and in May there are for five of the Committees they provided a mid-year update to the board in December or February that would be plaque rack student services and the equity team so there were five committee updates um mid-year and then there's the they have a year-end summary as well and you can find that we are on our website if you're a staff member or you have staff email which you do you go to the staff Tab and then you'll be able to see under groups nope under topics Holly just placed this year in summary there so you go to the intranets and then you look at the topics and you'll see committee um collaborative committees and that will if you wanted to review those summaries and I think they'll be really helpful As you move forward next year with or this summer with starting to think about a strategic plan because there's some really good recommendations for you as a board to focus on because you can't focus on everything and it's your job to pick some high level really high impact strategies and give the give the rest of the district Direction and say these are the three most important things so this will be a good source of data for you as you start to think about that and any other questions how will we know where to go or will they contact us or do we have to reach out to them you'll be added so every committee has an email group and then Brad I think manages all those email groups so he has the list of who's on what so he's going to add you to those committee groups and then you'll also get Google invites to the meetings you'll get a bunch of notifications that you've been added to Google Calendar in like July mid-july okay good question good question any other questions no okay seen that we'll move on to the cassette agenda according to our board policy I'm sorry yes sir I actually have a committee update oh my Lord did you go get her no go ahead may I provide one you may please so well we uh the stipend committee which Steve oversees uh we met and um I just wanted to bring it to everyone's attention that since I've been part of it for the past I think six months now there's been some really great strides the stipend committee oversees funds distributed to uh groups that um activities at all three levels of schools whether it's I don't know the right definition for it that any type of group activity that has been established and has a sponsor for over two years so they decide as a committee where these funds are going to be distributed if there's new groups that are coming if there's groups that need changes if there's new coaches if there's things like that and they've been doing a really good job the past couple months just reorganizing everything so that we know exactly who submitted what stipend at what time and they're kind of in a nice order and also they've been reaching out they've been making a lot of effort to make sure that the folks that want to have these groups and activities are actually apply lying appropriately one of the things that they ran into last year the feedback was they were missing the deadlines and people didn't know that they're missing it so really good job this year I think of making sure we hit the deadline on the flip side of that as we're going through negotiation there wasn't a lot of decisions that want to be made yet until that had all gone through so Steve sent out a really nice letter to let everybody know we've got your information we're going to be getting together early and right before school starts again to make some decisions which again a nice call out to that group because they're committing extra time to get together before school starts so um just want to commend the stipend committee because they're doing a really great job the other thing that I just learned about is a program called Summer melt have any of you guys heard of this so summer melt is and I need you to correct me from wrong Steve but it's the idea behind this is identifying students that are at risk for attending post-secondary schools so in the last year the school counselors identified 122 students that were at risk where they didn't think the student had planned to go to university and they were worried that they might not pull through with it maybe they are our first generation maybe they didn't know how to fill up the FAFSA maybe they didn't know exactly all the stuff to take to get to it so they actually work with those students over the summer to help them get into college so I thought that was just really great ones and I asked Steve at some point where I'm I'm hoping we can get some actual numbers he has he has a number oh do you actually have the numbers on yeah they work for the 54 students okay over last summer nice is that hit them in is that Junior to senior year so after they graduate the statistics around students who say yeah I'm going to college and then yeah over that summer period you see that melt on which is why they call that the summer melt and those kids who had intended and had the grades and sometimes scholarships don't end up registering going to you know those appointments so this is a little bit of a push and it's a lot of contact by a couple of our counselors at the high school that do that and work with those students and they've seen good results that's great and the other nice thing about this is they look like that's awesome yeah shout out to Belize who is one of our partners they are a big supporter of uh supporting this program really appreciate it that's it that is a very good report to interrupt me on fantastic thank you sir happy to do so better than me just saying beefy meets tomorrow can't wait till next month um all right so unless there is anything else from anyone else before I move on okay consent agenda according to our board policy we designate a portion of the agenda as a consent agenda for those items that usually do not require extensive discussion before board action these items generally are routine recurring Camp routine recurringing can be grouped together for efficiency Steve I hear you drew the Short Straw would you like to read I'm the all-time quarterback actually I know I know um just and before I jump into this real quick um there was a question about the meal price increase and if if you've uh done a deep dive into board docs which I don't recommend but the last six years you will always see this uh as a consent agenda item um whether you know this or not um the reason for this is the government sense like sets like a rate uh for the the prices and we're well below that rate and so our approach has been on an annual basis to bump it up that 10 cents uh to kind of get closer and closer to that rate and so you will continue to see this most likely on this consent agenda at this time of year um on an annual basis so just to give you a heads up on that for in the rationale for why we why we operate that way so let's jump into this 4.1 and 4.2 is the approval of the April 25th 2023 regular and special meeting minutes as Lisa spoke about 4.3 and 4.4.4 is the approval of the May 19 2023 special meeting in closed session minutes 4.5 is our monthly Personnel report 4.6 is the monthly payroll and bills 4.7 is the destruction of our closed session recordings from November 16 2021 uh 4.8 we had one donation a sizable donation from the Batavia wrestling club to support wrestling mats and kids going to wrestling camp at Batavia High School 4.9 is our textbook approval which is sitting right over here by Dr Newkirk 4.10 is the approval of the mentioned meal price increase 4.11 is the approval of our food service contract extension 4.12 is the appointment of our Auditors 4.13 is the approval of our stop-loss insurance contract 4.14 is the approval of our Google workspace for Education contract and 4.15 is the approval of this consent agenda anyone have any questions or anything I have one comment yeah uh meal price increase so I did reach out and had a couple questions about Josh responded very quickly and I just asked how does our what are we're asking families to pay compared to our colleagues Up and Down the River and I can just tell the community that we're very competitive in that regard so folks can know that we're giving a really good value on that so thank you for that appreciate it any other questions I have one yeah sure um so my question is for the textbook approval so that one is 11 we're going for 11 years out of date so say um what determines like what's out of date the high school sets up a cycle where they take a look at these because textbooks aren't something that we have for every content area but AP and dual credit require them as we get that outside curriculum so they say you have to use certain textbooks so we put all of those courses on a cycle of reviewing those and when it comes up in their rotation at the high school if the high school teachers are like yep that's up for Renewal we put in cni a small budget for renewals of textbooks each year and they kind of make the decisions about where they kind of rank in terms of the different needs sometimes the needs are based on we've had a large number of kids so we need more textbooks other times it's this textbook's out of date so we need to take a look at it and you said this is only for high school like I'm gonna say the elementary or middle schools they don't have I know they don't always have they don't have a cycle like that yeah come through the high school because of dual credit and AP they have a cycle of all those classes that we run that they take a look at those textbooks thank you Brad anyone else okay see no further comment or revisions I would entertain a motion to approve the consent agenda as presented so moved second can I call the favor yeah you would say move by oh yeah move by uh Aaron second by RJ and then Newton yeah all in favor aye emotions any opposed thank you hearing none motion carries thank you and reports I'll turn it back over to Elise every month you use the treasurer's reports and there's nothing unusual unusual or different this month on those reports nothing that stands out but this is your opportunity to review them we also have foia report every month but this month we didn't reply to any foyas so there was nothing there to show and then the next um but I would entertain any questions that you have about the treasures report and then um this part of the agenda is reports meaning there's no action um and I will turn it over to Tony for the next report the invite up the representatives from the city of Aurora to join us at the podium they are here to talk about an exciting development that is about to get underway which is in the city of Aurora but within the Batavia school district and it's adjacent to the outlet mall it would be uh the new Hollywood Casino to be constructed there very soon good evening my name is Alex alexandru I am the chief management officer for the city of Aurora we are pleased to be able to join you tonight thank you for welcoming us um while we physically may be quite a ways away from Bilter um and Farnsworth where the casino is going to be located it is in fact as you well know based on the very successful experience of our Chicago Premium Outlet Mall within the jurisdiction of school district 101.

[Applause] thank you Miss sudam now I'd like to introduce Mr Ruben Diaz our superintendent [Applause] excuse me come on we could do better than that all right I'll go with that for now but we can do a lot better than that it is an honor and a privilege to serve Autumn brothers and sisters as a superintendent um it's been a short six months as a superintendent four years wrapping up almost four years um as an assistant superintendent and superintendent but today I want to give you a couple of words not only to my students but also to our community um first I want the three I want you to walk away with three words happiness success and health happiness success and health the first one about happiness when life brings when we wish you what I want and I will pray is for you guys to be happy however life will bring a lot of sadness in your life embrace it welcome it because what he does it reminds you when you're happy not to take it for granted and at this point part of your happiness it also depends on where you come from from your past and those are happening around you so I want you to please do me a favor I want you to stand up stand up and I want you to please help me give a hand to the very first teachers in your life your parents they're the very first teachers that actually what's right what's wrong how to respect others how to Embrace Life how to embrace the universe the people in front of you behind you and around you please give your mind to your family and the people that have been in your past thank you bye thank you the second one about success happiness and success my second prayer for all of you is success and in the process you will fail in the process you will struggle and that's called life life will embrace you with challenges because you can you can Embrace those challenges because they already gave you the first teachers that the skills that you needed the strength that you needed they needed and the love that you need to overcome any obstacle that comes your way Embrace every failure Embrace every challenge because it will only make you stronger don't let anybody else Define you it is every step that I take A very wise person told me if you can be successful for five minutes you will be successful for the rest of your life do what it takes to be successful for five minutes and when you're done start all over start your next five the next five minutes when you're done do your next five minutes life is only five minutes intervals that will allow you to be successful take advantage of those five minutes you will hear voices those voices are the voices of your parents and the voices of your teachers telling you that's right or you're oh that's wrong watch out do not ignore that voice in your heart in your mind because they're the ones the only ones that will save us the last one my last prayer for you is health Health it's the greatest uh gift that we have in life when we have the when we have our health we'll be able to overcome whatever it comes not only for ourselves but also those people around us in the process you will get sick but remember every time you get sick your body does magic it will recover do the do what's right just like I say life it's about five minutes at a time it's also about the five people that you're gonna hang around in your life if you're gonna hang around with the happiest person the five happiest person that will help you to be happy if you're around the five people that are more successful you will be successful if you're around five people that take care of themselves in the hearts their mind and soul you will take care of yourself because eventually our Sunset is going to come and the sunrise for you will start I pray for you to be successful forever I pray for you for even many generations to have success to have health and to be happy having said that congratulations I am very proud of you parents I'm very proud of you thank you for your support enjoy the rest of the the program foreign thank you superintendent Diaz now I'd like to introduce our board president Mr buendia is governing board president for the barbecue unit of High School District it is 100 an honor to be here this morning I want to firstly recognize my fellow board members who are here as well as our governing board clerk Miss Anna Marie Stevens who couldn't be here today but she definitely sends her best it is I think a thousand percent with gratitude that I think the the eighth grade class as well as all of our Guardians all of our parents everyone else who helped these children to become who they are thus far and who will continue to help them as they continue through their educational uh time with us here at Barbecue University School District the school district has definitely taken on a lot of and a really difficult challenge but one of the things that I'm very very grateful for especially within these last couple of years when it comes to the trials and the tribulations that we face as a people nonetheless the people that were actually here with our students or at least try to engage with our students in educational um successes couldn't have done that without you you the community you the people who are who are home or who at least try to do your best especially when they came to giving the education that these children need not only in just teaching them to get up or or to be ready but also when we asked you to be a a teacher to a degree as well during the times that we know we have virtual learning um it is it is again an honor as a board member to be of this community to understand that this community is and will and has always been here and it will continue to be but to also be at the level that we are when it comes to all of our student achievements our state uh state requirements and all of those things that we can stand for as a people for our students for our nation um and for all of you who are here this morning so I'm going to turn a little bit just to kind of speak to the to the children but I don't want to be rude to just letting you know so um I just want to say if there's anything that you take away from today please take away this as much as everyone has shared understand that education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change this world I think above all your education is so important and that you've made it thus far with all of the things that we have to deal with as a people with all of the things that you have to deal with as a single person in this world understand that being present showing up showing love and respect for your neighbor will change not only this world but this nation it will change your community and we want you here with us we need you here with us so please understand that from us as the governing board we try to engage and encourage love support acknowledgment because it does matter and you do so thank you so much congratulations and I cannot wait to see you walk across the the the next stage in four years thank you [Applause] thank you Mr buendia foreign to welcome our in-house celebrity and a long time friend of mine The Honorable Miss Gabriela casares Kelly [Applause] your friends will always keep you humble distinguished guests thank you for having me here as your guest speaker um hi my name is Gabriela casidis Kelly I'm from the communities of business which are located of course right here in beautiful Pima County I am the first Native American to hold unelected county-wide seat in Pima County thank you [Music] and I'm actually the only the fourth in the whole state to hold a county-wide seat at this level [Applause] but before I was an elected official I I was right here in the school district um I was a teacher at the Alternative High School I taught here um taught here freshman English and I was also the College and Career Readiness counselor which is the last job that I had right before I left to run for office and it was actually through the conversations that I had with principal Sudan about whether or not I should try whether or not I should jump and to see if my community would catch me and you did oh I I think it's really easy uh to see people's successes um and it's really easy to forget about failures um and I think that every single speaker that's been up here so far has talked about failures um and I definitely like to talk about mine I do not want to ever forget um where I've come from um and so whenever I talk about my educational journey I actually talk about what happened after eighth grade so I went to school k through eight at San Simon Elementary School and my freshman year of high school I decided to move to town I decided I wanted to live with my sister which was great except that I failed my entire freshman year of high school the entire thing except for PE I walked away with only PE credits I don't know how um when I was at Desert View High School I ditched a lot I didn't like being there I thought it was too many people it was too noisy it was every hallway looked the same it was too big and I hated being there so I chose not to be and because of that I failed the freshman year of high school uh the next year I moved to be with my brother and his family and there was a little more structure there I had to have a bedtime and I ended up cramming four years of high school into three um and I almost was successful at that except I needed one last math class in order to pass so they allowed me to walk in my high school graduation and I walked across that stage and I was the only one that had an empty diploma holder so that summer I took a class at Pima Community College and it was the only time that I was taking a math class and that was the only thing that I was taking and I was actually really good at it and I had an A in the class and it was amazing because it was the only thing that I had to focus on until I found out I was pregnant and my a went to a b and then I found out I was pregnant with twins and my B went to a c and I like to tell people I'm really glad there wasn't one more baby in there because one more surprise and I would have failed that semester and that's how I started my college career my college career started at Pima and I remember very vividly one semester in particular there was a day where I was bouncing one baby on my knee I had the other one in their little case and I was rocking my foot and then I was typing my essay that was due later that day with one hand and I was waiting for my boyfriend who's now my husband to just come get the baby that was my college experience and it was full of a lot of struggle it was full of cars breaking down on the side of the road it was full of electricity shut off notices coming in the mail it was having to go get a food box because the food stamps didn't make it the whole month and we were having to count change for a bag of rice that was a lot of struggle but I just kept showing up I just kept showing up to Pima and I I felt embarrassed being there um I didn't really know what I wanted to do when I grew up and at the same time I had just had babies so I was a grown-up and I didn't know what I wanted to do with my whole life and I was scared to talk to people about it I was scared and embarrassed and I thought that people would tell me that I needed to just stay home wait till my babies got a little older that's not what would have happened I know that now if I had told anybody they would have helped me but I didn't know that that was normal I didn't know that people struggled when they were going to school I thought everybody just did it and it was easy for them and I had no idea so I took classes at Pima until I ran out of classes to take at Pima there was literally like oh I took that I took that I took that and I needed to take other classes and so I had to transfer to the University of Arizona which I did and in order to register for classes at U of A you have to go through a special transfer orientation which I did and they put us in a computer lab and they said okay now you guys can go ahead and register and this whole classroom full of students everybody starts taking out sheets of paper they start clicking and they're typing away and everybody knows what to do except for me and I'm looking around in the room and I'm like did I miss something in the orientation I how does everybody know what to take and so I had a SpongeBob SquarePants moment where I'm like [Music] to raise my hand excuse me lady comes over and she says what do you need and I said I I don't know what classes to register for and she goes oh anything in your major minor and I'm like I don't I don't know what my major minor is and she kind of did one of these neck things just kind of with the Sass she goes honey you need to know you're a junior and I was so surprised because I had been so focused on my cars breaking down on the shutoff electricity notices about trying to find cheap diapers about getting food boxes that I had no idea that I had actually made progress on my degree and I was a junior at the University of Arizona I had no idea I continued to go to school and I continued to struggle there wasn't some magic thing that happened where I suddenly wasn't struggling I struggled the entire time and actually principal sudam and I were in some of those classes and she watched some of she watched my kids during one particular uh final where I couldn't get a babysitter and needed to do a presentation I was struggling and I graduated and my GPA wasn't great but I finished I had to petition to graduate and so I never really felt really great about it I didn't feel really accomplished I'm like yeah they probably just let me graduate so that I would get off campus like they were probably just tired of me so I after a few years and it wasn't really a good fit and then I found myself at Thon off of Community College at Von altham Community College I worked as a student support specialist and I helped students get registered for classes and I told them my story all the time about how you just keep showing up to classes and we will help you figure it out um and around five years in an administrator came and they said we have this money to send you to school if you want to get your master's degree we can fund you for your master's degree and I was like me do they know that I'm not smart do they know that I'm a bad student I'm not a good student I'm not going to be good at that I barely made it through high school I barely made it through Pima I barely graduated from the U of A and you want me to go for a master's degree that's ridiculous and so I turned down the money I turned down free money so maybe I wasn't that smart but a friend talked me into trying anyway and I was they asked me three different times my friends were pressuring me they were saying like no you're so smart you would be so good at this you are a great employee here you absolutely need to try for this and finally I got really annoyed and I'm like you know what bye I will show you how bad of a student I am go ahead fine so I applied to grad school and the very first semester I got all A's and I was like what I don't Ace me and then the next semester I got all A's and the next semester and I started to wonder about why like why am I suddenly doing so great at school and it was because I was working and I had a paycheck and my cars weren't falling apart every day and I didn't have electricity shut off notices anymore and I had food on the table and my kids were a little bit older and they were in school um and my husband would come into the bedroom when I was doing um homework and he would just like hand me a plate of food and walk out I had the support of my my supervisors at work they would let me take half a Friday off so that I could go work on my papers um and they would let me leave for class at a certain time um on the days when I had to go and be in person and be in class and so I had all of this support and I had all of my basic needs being met and so I was allowed to just focus on the work and so that's not always going to happen sometimes you're gonna have to be worrying about those electricity notices or your car breaking down in the middle of a final sometimes that's going to happen and you find ways to just keep showing up I finished at NAU I graduated in 2012 with a master's in educational leadership for Community College and higher education 4.0 GPA I graduated with honors I tell that story not to be chumskug even though you're probably thinking I'm stuck I tell that story because it's important for you to know that every single person is going to fail every single person is going to struggle every single person is going to feel overwhelmed and and need to cry it out and sometimes you're going to show up to things and you're going to be like I don't even know if I belong in this space or I've had so many absences I don't even know what's going on but the most important thing is to just continue to show up showing up like you did today for your eighth grade promotion and look at your family showing up for you to celebrate this day with you it makes it so special um I want my advice for you all is number one to not make a decision about whether or not you're going to be good at something before you even started do not take yourself out of the game without trying the other thing it's okay to fail everybody fails I have failed pick up you try again and the most important thing is continue to show up continue to show up even if you don't know what you're doing even if you don't know where you're going even if you're thinking do I really need to be here continue to show up it makes all the difference without those without showing up to Pima and to the U of A and to the into NAU I would not be able to have the position that I have now running for office it wasn't a position that was required but because I'm awesome and many people had so many issues qualified to run for office yes yes I am but they wanted to know well what what experience does she have what what does she bring to the table and I was able to talk about yes I can manage 42 staff members I manage whole classrooms yes I can manage a Workforce of this big because I've taken 60 students to California overnight yes um and and look and here's this piece of paper these degrees that show you that I have these qualifications and that was absolutely a factor in some people's decisions about whether or not to vote for me um and I also just want to remind you all I took a leap and I let my community catch me and my community caught me I am giving you the advice jump because your community is here and we will catch you [Applause] thank you Miss casadas Kelly now we'd like to introduce the class officers oh president zinico Joaquin [Applause] vice president Rosario Francisco [Applause] secretary Elisa Norris [Applause] representative Malia Donahue [Applause] and the historian Amani niece [Applause] now we're going to hear from our students Dan carella [Applause] foreign Shirley Harvey first off the class and I would like to thank our parents Guardians teachers and staff for their support to us throughout the school year you encourage us to stay determined towards our goal of starting and finishing the school year strongly the beginning of the school year was very slow very rough for me other than it's academically driven as I am now I chose to put myself around people that would distract me in my classes at what cause me to get grades I was not satisfied with this continued on for the rest of the first quarter around the last week of the first quarter a teacher would remind us how much time we had before the grades are due me being an extreme procrastinator I would wait until the last weeks of the quarter to decide to get my grades by the time the deadline for the grades came it was too late and I didn't do enough to get my grades to a place I was satisfied with I remember vaguely getting a letter for retention and being disappointed with my grades after this I decided to set myself a goal for the second quarter the goal wasn't very specific and was just to get good grades at the beginning of the second quarter I tried to separate myself from the group of people that had been distracting me the entire first quarter unfortunately I didn't get the progress I was looking for I again decided to surround myself with the same group of people that would hold me back academically I made little to no progress towards my goal until the School's football season started I did decide I decided to set myself a new goal get good enough grades since I knew I was a student first then an athlete I knew my academics would play a huge part in my Athletics this knowledge caused me to set the goal I set myself ultimately the football season itself had no effect on me but the effect the season had on my grades had satisfied me and at the quarter with grades that were good enough therefore I had achieved my goal and ended the quarter with good grades during our winter break I made myself a new year's resolution the resolution was to have better time management and to become less of a procrastinator I stayed committed to this goal as much as I could I stayed on top of my schoolwork by doing it the moment it was assigned I also realized there was a three hour gap after school a free time ahead I decided to stop being unproductive and decided that I would use this time to get assignments done and over with this time go this time Gap helped me massively every time I checked my grades I realized my grades had improved and I was satisfied and proud now I would like to encourage my classmates to take their academics more seriously now that we're moving on to high school the academic standards are much more challenging I would also like to encourage them to not be a huge procrastinator like myself as it can cause huge huge amounts of stress and I would like to end my speech with the quote stated by an anonymous individual we are braver than we believe smarter than we think and stronger than we seem this quote means that if we set our minds to something and have determination to a goal we can achieve it thank you [Applause] um now we'll have Miss sudam come up for presentation of certificates because she said these words oh she didn't tell me that all
