congratulations [Music] Teresa Michelle here okay here Gladys here Lauren here Jesse here Bridget here Julie here president Albert here Luisa here all right okay favorite part of the night so for recognition we have Dr Keisha Smith Davis principal of Great Plain Elementary School [Applause] thank you [Applause] thank you I didn't say what you want yet but that that's the kind of rule again so Dr Keisha Smith Davis principal Raceway Elementary School namely Connecticut Association of schools elementary principal of the year and we're going to open up with um Mr Mayor um say a couple things for his smell yes thank you Dr Keisha Smith Davis I want to present you with this Proclamation from the city of Danbury and this is from my hand and recognition from the city and the citizens of the city of Danbury a lot of the nice words that will be said tonight are in here but I just wanted to tell you from my heart thank you so much for everything you've done for the students in this city since 2004 right yes and you've been totally committed and I have to say the school in general Blue Ribbon School outstanding job and you know for what you do you bring education to our youth make it the best you can do and we all appreciate that and as the mayor of the city you bring recognition to the city of Denver and the quality of Education that's provided here by amongst your peers as well for everything you do congratulations [Applause] thank you [Applause] television so now I'm going to say a few words that might be an artist yeah [Music] all right I'm gonna seek here you're not getting off the hook anymore [Music] thank you all right so I'm going to say a couple of things I forewarned you throughout I won't do any embarrassing stories so um Dr Smith Davis and I go back a while with Great Plain so we moved we moved up here from New York 20 20 years ago and we didn't know anyone it's a local school we heard about great plan we heard good things about it so you know when you're a parent because mostly most you guys are um you care about a couple things and care about if your kid is gonna be safe in the school and be cared for so and Miss Smith won't tell you but the first couple of years you were there it wasn't too easy for you again and I'm glad that you suck [Applause] with it because you know we have a lot of parents and stuff that are here and if we actually put it out there I mean this place would be so we have we have to hold it at a huge auditory um and so when I when I have the honor of being asked to you know talk about Miss Smith when uh from the selection committee and what I told him was I'm never going to tell her what I really said but um I told the one thing about great plane was that um Keisha included everyone in everything all right so it was so you you didn't you didn't feel like you didn't have and someone else had something more than you did in that school you felt part of the school and we've made some of our our best friends there not knowing anyone to the bus stop so when you go to that school if you ever have the the um chance to even go there or talk to someone who had their kids go through there um that all comes from the person who's in charge and the culture there and the way she does things is just like nothing else I've ever seen and as a PTO president there we worked very closely together and then on to the board um it's just really about the kids and we've we've had some you know tough times there um over the years but to accomplish what you accomplished and you know school just the way it is I can't really print the words I'm never really if anybody knows me a loss for words um but it shifts I'm proud to be a part of that school and that's largely in part to what she's done there and and I just want to say I'm so proud to call you my friend and okay foreign [Applause] get a feel for the person any one of the school principals or have been principals know that it's the person in charge at that school dictates the culture okay so I'm just I'm just so proud because this is what it's all about because most people don't even know the Board of Ed does so stuff like this is great when we get to recognize uh a star in addition and thank you for staying here as long as you have and I hope you stay here you know for another 10 years I'm hoping the next couple of years anyway I just want to say thank you for everything you do good job foreign [Music] and I said to the panel the right selection is Dr Smith because when you walk into school that big beautiful smile the next person cannot help you cannot assist you with anybody and then you look at the educational things that she does for all the children not just one set of kids that's over here that need the help she put the energy animated student of all the children get what they'll need and that's my thank you it calls me for as long as I have been on board this is my 32nd year to have worked with you and the biggest thing that's coming and I can fill it in I hope that I'm around to see her so I want to say to you and I'm not talking congratulations many many many more happy things are going to come and much success [Applause] well I'm happy to hear that we have many many more years I've heard it from Miss Cooper 19 more years we will sign that contract right now I I too have a few words and I also want to provide some context for the audiences of the people also watching so the cast Connecticut Association of schools principal of the Year program recognizes outstanding principals who have succeeded in providing high quality learning opportunities for students and demonstrated exemplary contributions to the profession tonight our very own Dr Keisha Smith Davis has been recognized by Cass as in 2023 they're seeing some increases in test scores and grades seeing better attendance so we're hoping that the assemblyman will help us out with some funding but they were very receptive and it was an excellent meeting so I thank them for that and then lastly to my fellow board members I have a list of committees in front of you and I know it's a little bit different than you're used to but I thought we could try streamlining some of the Committees because some obviously go together so I just looked for some broad terms so the operations committee and I was hoping that Mr capano would share that really encompasses the committee's formerly known as facilities finance and buildings and grounds since that all falls under the umbrella of the operations of the district but I thought for consistency purposes it would be better to have the same group of people really looking at the facilities the financing the buildings and grounds and then for the other committee the umbrella would be education but under education would fall academics Athletics and policy and then probably one of our most important committees would be Safety and Security and I would hope that Mr Russo would be our chair for that um and you would be working with obviously the police department and so forth on the Safety and Security of the district and Mississippi Brew if you would be chair of the education committee but I thought just for consistency purposes even though the conversations would center around several topics if we just look at the district twofold as operations and education and then the umbrella of everything that we do would be Safety and Security so if you wouldn't mind trying it out this way first operations obviously would work very closely with Mr alfano and education would work very closely with Mrs Calabrese so safety security obviously with the district the superintendent and the police department so if you wouldn't mind trying it out this way I think that you'll find that the Committees go together so well that they really are interrelated and it's hard to break them apart anyway and that concludes my report um are there any comments regarding committees even though they're newly formed and we really haven't had any meetings yet well in reference to operations Dr Pantheon we you know as you know the building and grounds and Facilities has a lot going on uh with summer projects that are going to get started uh Lou alfano and uh chiro our supervisor of the facilities that have been working closely with land Associates on some massive projects coming down the pike we're also working closely with the Pharaoh in reference to the synagogue property that is going to be adjacent to Borough Hall where we've made a decision to possibly make it a High School annex on uh on the second third of floors and we're working closely with some of our principals and getting recommendations for classrooms and what this Annex would be compromised of so that it's moving along well and Lou I know we had a pre-construction meeting uh that you sent some meeting minutes out to me and everything else is pretty much getting it in line for uh all these uh facility projects for the summer correct yeah we're like we're lined up pretty well like you said the rtu project we've awarded we awarded the masonry product and we had our pre-construction meeting for the masonry and we're going to have the pre-construction meeting for the rtu project next week so so things are moving along Lou right after uh the Memorial Day weekend if we can just have a quick meeting with the people on the expansion committee for the synagogue with the annex for the high school so we can just go over Mr iavino's uh he wants to start formalizing some things sure I have no further report thank you okay anyone else have any further comments questions not that I can answer questions on the agenda because Mr romanino isn't here but any comments or concerns all right so I'd like to move the consent agenda Mr alfano okay Dr ponciliano would you like to go through some of the items around if you want to I'm not okay I don't feel comfortable going through anything no problem at all I'll sift through it if anyone has any questions or the public again if you go to uh page two and we got a lot going on here is a fair amount of Personnel in this meeting here in May and also the meetings in June we'll be appointing uh much of our personnel we have a note here in regard to the board self-evaluation on page two resolution recommended so we're going to send them to schools to accept the board self eval from Mr Roman Gina and then as everyone knows Mr Roman Gino is retiring June 30th and the resolution below that is Mr Hayes it's going to be coming on as the interim superintendent effective July 1st other items on page three if you look on the bottom third one from the bottom Mr janushi at the high school will be the new vice principal effective July 1st 2023 as you know Mr Lombardo is going to be moving to school six in the 23-24 school year and directly below that we have Mr Miller who will continue to be our residency officer 23-24 school year page four is essentially we're using our after-school money summer school money with our Century 21 Grand and our federal funding and again if there's a point of note or op funding I expires September of 2024.

award portion of our ceremony followed by our senior speakers so each year the staff at McClellan has the opportunity to honor select students from the graduating class just as each staff member is unique each of our reasons for choosing the student we are honoring is unique it is all a part of what makes McClellan special I struggled this year to choose my recipient I feel strong connections with the students sitting in front of us the students I the student I chose to honor tonight showed me something about what it means to support family he walked into our school credit deficient like so many of our young adults due to distance learning once he walked onto our campus he never failed a class there might have been times when we were working with him up until the last minute to make sure he passed the class but he still followed through he even took summer school last year and completed 25 credits in 18 days by working hard at home to complete as many online courses as he was allowed to take all of this enabled him to graduate early if that isn't amazing enough he did all this while helping his mom support his family I am so proud to have been part of this student's Journey please let me introduce to you Freddie Isaac Horner Ramirez [Applause] thank you now I'd like to introduce Miss bence hi my name is Miss bence I am so honored to be presenting an award to this person tonight I chose him out of all of our amazing seniors for good reason he joined us a little later into the school year but he didn't let this hold him back the first class I had him in was government and he completely changed the dynamic in our class in the best way he was excited to learn as much as he could he was always engaged and positive even when he was tired or had a rough day he participated and took political discussions to a depth that many students wouldn't class after class the student proved his love of learning and he was consistent in the energy that he would bring into the room as a teacher this is the best thing you can ask for in a student that desire to always want to learn more I want to thank you for being you keeping class discussions interesting and always bringing your best I have loved getting to know you throughout this year and having you as a student has truly been a joy and with that being said I present this award to Cyrus Jackson Shelby [Applause] well hello there I uh I also have a a certain person that I've picked out um I teach science Health PE and uh coach 4 Sports and so it's rare that you're going to find somebody that's going to stand out in every single one of those areas but um this particular person stood out in class in every class I had with them um consistently just on it like never did I have to come and say hey can you do some of this so you could pass it was just never anything besides like are you getting a b or an A that was the whole thing and then when it came out to sports I mean this person just clearly always Rose to the top as a leader not just in in the way that he played but also in the way that he cared for his teammates and his coaches um I I just uh it's really hard to say too many great things about Alex tomasella but I'd like to bring him up here I'll tell you that he's an amazing young man you're amazing [Applause] [Music] [Applause] and next up Mr Graves welcome okay so it is said that everyone has the capacity to make people happy some when they arrive others when they leave this student is definitely the former seeing this person always brighten my day and I'm sure there was consensus on this usually smiling may be joking always as good an attitude as possible even during trying times this student like many had occasional struggles in math but push through with a positive can-do attitude continually trying and asking the questions needed and frequently asking for just one more example to help the understanding I never experienced anything resembling Defiance resistance or quitting I have absolutely no doubt that this is someone who will be able to handle whatever life throws at them and use those challenges to learn and to grow and at the end of the day isn't that what successful adulting is supposed to be about it also doesn't hurt that he's a fan of the greatest football team of all time the 49ers thank you so this award goes to someone known for his smile his laugh and of course most distinctly the Golden Tones of his Rich baritone voice my award goes to the man the myth the legend George Mitchell [Applause] [Music] [Applause] they should never put me at the end of these things I get too emotional okay I'm so proud to present my award this year to a student who like many of our graduates faced obstacles and barriers to their success in my role as academic coordinator I'm often working with students and teachers on making learning accessible ensuring that what we do in the classroom is working with our students and for our students and because of that I've had the opportunity to work with most of you one-on-one in a really close capacity sometimes nagging you a little but you liked it right um this year I got to make the shift back into the classroom so many of you I got to have in class and we got to experience each other on a whole different level this student in particular for the last two years has brought me such Joy his laughter his smile are infectious and over the last two years that I've been able to work with him I've watched him grow and mature in particular at our senior dinner I watched this young man Express appreciation for his family his teachers and his own hard work and determination which propels him into new opportunities for his own greatness Roger Crawford once said being challenged in life is inevitable being defeated is optional and this student has proven that he is choosing success I watched you encourage friends and teammates even when your own eligibility might have been in question you stayed and worked with teachers you put in extra class time and these choices took away your ability to fail you remove your own barriers to success and I'm so proud of you Isaac would you please join me on stage for this award [Applause] okay so it's been my honor to watch the student grow into an amazing adult over the last two years this growth has often been the kind that looks like two steps forward and one step back but in that act of trying and succeeding or trying and occasionally not trying and failing there was growth always growth I could always count on this person to tell me or show me how they were feeling as they walked through my door with a I'm mad sup what or bra I will especially miss looking at my up at my office ceiling to see what they may have left stuck up there after a visit from the student what an amazing reminder to take a moment to look out from whatever you are doing or feeling to see a different perspective on things I am so proud you made the choice do all the things you needed to do to graduate because once you made that choice I watched you succeed with a glitter of determination in your eyes I know you're still trying to decide what your next step will be to that I will say don't sit at home waiting for the magical opportunity try something get a job go to college travel to places you've never been try something until you can do something else you'll find what you love along the way above all believe in yourself like I believe in you and you will be anything and accomplish anything you set your mind to Jose Angel Medina thank you for sharing [Applause] foreign all right I have an award to give also this student joined us as an 11th grader in the year 2021-22 and he had some ups and downs that year however something clicked for him and he began to excel in summer school following that year and he came back this year and earned a 4.0 Straight A's every grading period graduated early I look at this young man and I see someone who has overcome his own challenges changed his life for the better and developed an incredibly positive attitude toward himself and others I see a young man who has a great future ahead of him my award goes to Juan Gonzalez Ramirez [Applause] I also have the pleasure of introducing our student speakers we have two this year who volunteered we promised we didn't twist any arms to make this happen our first student speaker is lean gonsalves [Applause] good evening my name is Alina Gonzalez and here's the speech I Have to Give as of about as about three or four of you know I had a teacher here when I went to Center named Mr Huey and he was the theater teacher and probably one of my favorite on this stage right here he taught me to be myself even when I didn't like myself very much he taught me that even though I am unable to look at the crowd very long or speak all the words one after another that I always had the right thing to say he told me that I spoke words stronger than I could ever give myself credit for which is something I've also been told by my family my mom my dad uncles and many other I've been mature for my age a long time and so I have given the speech thing a chance to say a mature and hopefully meaningful speech this is the real reason I decided to give a speech today to my fellow graduates of the 2023 school year I have this to say even with the struggles we all have been through especially with covid and the effect it has had on all of us we are here graduating because we are strong we got through something that maybe some before us and some after us will never be able to and with that we are about to turn the page of our book to a new chapter that I'm not sure any of us are truly ready for from the moment we walk across the stage and out of the doors we will be saying goodbye to this chapter and building from it and its experiences turning the page to the chapter full of new things good or bad hopefully opportunities and growth to hardship and difficulties and possible disappointment we are about to start making our adult decisions we are about to have different circumstances than the last few years of Our Lives this will all be for the better as I am positive that we will all be doing great things so again congratulations to everyone graduating today and to the juniors in the room who may be here congratulations you're almost to the finish line thank you [Applause] our second student speaker is again Mr Juan Gonzalez Ramirez [Applause] okay all right um good evening on Juan Enrique Gonzalez Ramirez and I'm a I'm a student at McLean high school I'm a graduate now I'm very proud to be at the position that I am at currently although it was never part of my plan to be at this great school it turned out for the better and the reason I say that is because I've always gone by a quote in my life one or two there's a different one but we'll get to that the first one uh whatever life does at you it's just an obstacle in the way some people might have heard me say that and the reason I say that is because although I've attended Center high school and I had to get moved to this school and I thought that was a bad thing I took that as a good thing and that was a path that I had to move on to in my life that was an obstacle that you yourself have to move uh over and get through to proceed to that end goal that you want to have and for that reason I've kept going on in life and the next one the next uh sorry the next uh quote that I have has been told by my parents many times and they've always told me a pencil is always lighter than a shovel my parents have taught me to be a great man and I've always been that and I've been outside I've worked I've worked a hard job while I've been graduated and I would tell you guys unless that's what you want I would say take your chances take a risk and go to the goal that you want go to college and do your best and for my advice for any high schoolers and if you don't know what to do if you don't want to if you want to know if you want to take that risk I would say go for it that is my advice because then you won't know you won't know if that risk will turn out for the better so I would say do do what you want take that risk it'll turn out for the better and I want to thank the staff here I mean they were they've been wonderful the time I've been here and thanks to the students who are graduating here today and the amazing people who came here to watch their fan their family their friend whoever they are to you graduate and be there for them and I want to thank you guys and I mean congratulations to the graduates thank you [Applause] all right one of the things that we believe in very firmly at McClellan is gratitude we always want to thank those who have helped us we don't want to lose an opportunity to tell people what they mean to us to that end we conduct our Rose ceremony at graduation each year during the ceremony our graduates will take a rose from either Miss Dodson or Miss Jones we will play the song because you love me during that time graduates you will present that Rose to someone you feel has been instrumental in helping you get to the stage tonight graduates do not miss this chance to let someone know how much of an impact they have made in your life we will start the song you have till the end of the song to present your rose go ahead and take your roses graduates thank you just roll this on forever [Music] I'll be with the land s [Music] when I couldn't speak [Music] it wasn't me Lifting me [Music] understand [Music] I'm grateful for each day [Music] all right thank you all that always brings a little Miss to the eyes to say the least graduates families and friends I have a last lesson from McClellan for our seniors and for all of us and I want to start with a quote from Booker T Washington he said success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has overcome graduates you are all receiving High School diplomas tonight and that is a wonderful accomplishment that is a symbol that you have successfully completed the program of Education outlined by the state of California you have spent 13 years of your lives in school and you have passed all the required courses your parents and family have helped you your teachers and School staff have helped you your friends have helped you but most important you have put in the time and done the work yourselves now you are joining the thousands and thousands of students across the country who at this time of year are also receiving their diplomas you have succeeded however as I look out at you I see successes even greater than diplomas I see young men and women who have overcome their own obstacles I see people who rose up out of depression who fought against anxiety who won out over distraction who pushed themselves past lack of motivation who knocked aside frustrations and fears who beat bad habits and who found a way to win out over difficult circumstances I see people who have changed their lives for the better those are truly exciting successes your diplomas are indeed a great achievement you will go on to more milestones in life but succeeding against your own barriers is a life-changing victory graduating high school will stand as proof that you can achieve despite challenges you are able to stop saying I can't and shift to asking yes I can how can I that is truly a powerful Victory and with that how can I mindset you can look forward to more and greater achievements in your futures at our senior dinner last week several students stood up and encouraged their classmates to find what they love follow their dreams and live their best lives those things are only possible when we overcome our own obstacles graduates your success tonight is the result of getting past roadblocks in your lives the ability to do that is the same ability that will lead you to Future successes and greater achievements it's my hope one day you'll be able to step back from your lives and see not just the joys and the victories you have but also the barriers you've broken through to reach them your diploma is again a symbol of your current achievement but it is also a predictor of your future successes with that recognition of success I would like to begin calling our graduates to cross the stage into this next phase of their lives as they receive their diplomas Mr Collins will be reading the life statement each graduate wrote earlier this year so I have a huge favor to ask of our audience and I know we have a very enthusiastic audience tonight I'm very happy about that but we want to hear what each graduate wrote so if you will be so kind as to hold your applause and cheers until everyone has cross-staged so we can hear we'll give a huge monster cheer at the end of the audience at the end of the all graduates passing can we all do that please thank you so much you're wonderful I appreciate it all right let's have our first row graduate stand all right Alina Gonzalez what are you [Applause] thank you Raul at this time I would like to introduce our very own Western High School choir under the direction of Mrs Narrows performing for good [Music] thank you [Music] [Applause] [Music] bringing something we must love to those who help us [Music] but I know I'm who I am today because I knew you like [Music] a stream that means [Music] it will make foreign [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] because I knew you because I knew you I have been changed before [Music] [Applause] but then I guess we know there's blame to share [Applause] [Music] price [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] foreign [Music] [Applause] what a beautiful performance I would like now to introduce our next senior speaker Madison Spencer [Music] good morning um So within the past four years we've been through a pandemic resulting in distance learning losing loved ones due to covid a mental health crisis unemployment Financial struggles and loneliness in the end look where we are sitting in chairs with anticipation waiting for them to call our names so we can realize our goal of graduating be who and what we want to truly be however we cannot be where we are now without high school itself for me it was during the year and a half long pandemic when I realized what I wanted to do with my life I made an action in September of 2020 that could have stopped me from living my true potential and I regret it for years to come yet this same action made me decide what I wanted to do with my life to help people in medical emergencies I aspire to be a paramedic and then become a forensic nurse I want to do this not just for me but for society itself to help others in times of need and protect the community from medical mishaps it's a passion for me to go forth and protect and save those that I can high school prepared me to know times will be tough and it will get hard this would all be impossible without being pushed to my limits it was when my mom Ginny taught me how to read Because all my teachers had given up on teaching me yet she saw my potential and taught me it was when Senora Ruiz told me if I wanted to learn Spanish that I could do it because he knew I had the potential it was when my dad kept pushing me past my limits because he knew I was capable of better things it was when I got a three on my AP English Language exam it was when Miss Chavez nominated for the Mary E Moore Foundation inspirational scholarship award and I actually got it it was those times when I realized I can do it because I have the potential for every student that sits here today thank you thank you for not giving up on yourselves because there is potential in every single one of you no matter how many people tell you you cannot do it I remain resilient because I wanted to one day see a smile on my parents face and say I could you know I did it and which I could do today cheers to the class of 2023.

second second I'm sure any discussion uh quick question since we are adopting this financial report at this point um there's a board all our speakers are in mind that we're not in the changes am I correct as to what we're doing okay and um there has been some back and forth and I know John did a couple of more Millions ago that are trying to see that is complete without a portion of a single believer are we still waiting for some information concerned about what I think I think the information has been received by the finance committee um you know Mr Russo might be able to comment to Food Store we had a gathering and I had a chance to overlook take a look at our healthy financial report I had a finance committee meeting all line items had been adjusted to their proper balance uh any changes that need to be made to be shipped to One account another hit had already been done prior to the April report actually that the March report we got clarification so when we finally got to hang on again everything was in order as far as as far as the city's uh bought it to my knowledge and limited knowledge it is that they're about forensic plug it still has been it's completed excuse me so so the question is because it's going back and forth so I'm trying to clarify where we are if the board has said their part as far as giving the information um I have to whoever it is the state or whoever it is for the order then we are all clear that's my only question as far as the audit have we done everything on our end at this point it's one of the audience I want to interject and just clarify a couple of things as I understand them a couple of weeks ago about three weeks ago now we received the requests from the city of Danbury uh to submit additional information as a result of an audit of the city of Denver of course given that we're 141 million dollars part of that order and of course there is information we have to submit on in the city staff and so John's office received this request a couple weeks ago information was submitted a couple days later they asked for additional information not the same information but additional information we submit that couple of days later they have City for more information and then he came back and access for more information and so it's not as if it's the same information and we didn't submit it it's additional information that you continue to ask for and so I I don't know what we left off I Know Dan Garrett from the city of Danbury requested that the audit has actually come in that that might actually be more beneficial it's a strategy that John used last year and it seemed to be beneficially to stay here for a couple of days I'm not sure where we are with that I have not seen any additional requests in the last week I'm John I'm not sure if you have but I know him in his office I mean with with the entire year I was trying to close out this year open up next year my office is in the middle of an audit right now in the middle of all of our chaos right now and so John I'll just ask you just kind of speak to this question and uh you know what we're talking about is for the year that ended June 30th 2021.
