[Applause] [Music] foreign [Music] [Applause] foreign [Music] [Applause] foreign [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] foreign [Music] foreign [Music] foreign [Music] good evening and let me be the first to welcome you to the graduation ceremony for the Allies Stevenson class of 2023. congratulations and parents and Guardians grandparents family friends if you would please rise and join us for the national anthem foreign [Music] foreign [Music] [Applause] I'm Steve Frost and I have the honor of speaking to you today on behalf of the Stevenson High School Board of Education I congratulate the parents grandparents and siblings of our graduates because without your support our graduates would not be here I also want to congratulate the class of you've accomplished much while madurian coven and witnessing significant events around you because of what you've endured and witnessed I want to take a few moments to speak with you about our portrait of the Stevenson graduate and its importance after you leave High School I was having lunch with friends earlier this year and they started discussing a bill that had passed one chamber of Congress one of my friends was strongly in favor of the bill and another friend was strongly opposed I found the discussion fascinating as a bystander I quickly realized that my friends are arguing about policy while each was making different assumptions about the facts underlying the legislation people can't rationally debate policy if they don't first agree on the underlying facts it should be easy to check and agree on facts right maybe not understanding and recognizing what our facts is important godfreed leaving it's a 17th century philosopher described it best when he said it's the knowledge of necessary and eternal truths which distinguishes us from your animals it gives us reason and the Sciences unfortunately we live in a world where facts are often obscured or even intentionally hidden we're bombarded daily with misinformation and commentary that's cloaked as news it's ubiquitous The Pursuit Of Truth is even more important in a democracy as Abraham Lincoln once said I'm a firm believer in the people if given the truth they can be dependent upon to meet any national crisis the great point is to bring them the real fans our portrait of estimates and graduate asks our students to commit to self to others into learning the commitment to learning as that you strive for continuous Improvement Foster and curious creative and Innovative mind sustain and growth mindset with facing challenges develop problem solving and reflective skills and collaborate with and learn from others what do these words mean in the context of my friend's discussion about a congressional bill I believe the portrait of a graduate leads into several conclusions conclusions we must stay informed to identify accurate information we must seek out incredible sources to be willing to listen to and learn from others even if we disagree we must be critical thinkers request from what we're told even it comes from sources We Trust and we must seek out multiple perspectives weigh evidence carefully and be willing to revise your beliefs when new evidence emerges finally we have to be honest we have to be truthful with ourselves and others and be willing to admit when we don't know something or when we've made a mistake is it that simple is she not the most difficult important conclusion is that you must be aware of the factors that influence our perceptions or put another way our biases from the truth there are many but some of the Common forms of eyes include confirmation bias which refers to the tendency to only pay attention to news stories to confirm your opinions [Music] describes learning a little about a topic and then assuming you know all there is to know about it which limits your curiosity and your ability to examine effect but they ultimately realized that he needed more fans before continuing their discussion but it takes a real effort to recognize your own biases the commitment to learning requires that you begin your analysis by evaluating your own thought process first [Music] thank you don't forget the ancient words there is foreign [Music] [Applause] [Music] this class you look beautiful out there dressed in green all of you So Fresh So ready to go out and attack the world we are excited now to hear from some of your fellow students and so it is my pleasure to introduce the first of our student speakers who will be giving the scripter address which looks back at our four years together our speaker today is Samuel Eton his parents Robert and Lisa come on up Sammy thank you Mr gobble fellow graduates faculty administrators parents and families Stevenson Patriots my name is Sammy and I'm honored to be up here today to reflect on our past four years you know it was a big day when your parents are taking pictures and by taking pictures every five seconds to take a picture with every person I have ever known [Music] congratulations my little saying grew up so fast and you know what those moms are right we have running fast you know just four years ago you walked into Stevenson for the very first time it was an unfamiliar environment we all stare at the table times read out one of the most crucial we have ever seen what goofball wrote that joke we were scared we experienced so many challenges worst of all was being spam with email saying your shs iPad is pretty low on available storage from someone we all know named Nancy Hudson but quickly we realized that Stevenson is a very special place where else can you find a random ice skating rink to celebrate advice Phoenix's birthday where else can you taste the most delicious of the police sauce then it's Sandy's in the back of the wood Commons where else can you walk into a classroom here in a friendly ambassador and then just when we got used to the place it was taken away from us we were all so excited for this so-called extended spring break then two months later listening to a chemistry lecture half of us wearing pants half of us yeah probably not yeah The Joy was gone and well in which Cove had never happened it did teach us to appreciate the connections with both our teachers and peers things you could otherwise take granted knowing you would eventually return to school in return we did our athletes excelled in every level of competition between this year and last year we won state championships in over a dozen athletic events no other school can boast of these accomplishments especially that team up north from Stevenson football 48 Libertyville 8 43 8 football oh sorry I don't know where that came from personally I accomplished by a long time ago it became that goofball who writes the utterly awful jokes in the technical times thank you [Music] in our success however would not have been possible without without the help of our adult role models so where are the parents the teachers in the crowd can I hear the parents the teachers makes noise [Applause] thank parents teachers for your Relentless support and now I'd like to conclude with the quote from a well-known and influential writing from the early 2000s SpongeBob SquarePants in a matter of hours for ourselves take a picture of the people who are there to celebrate that Milestone achievement with you use these pictures to always always remember that you are a part of a lifelong community of winners of leaders of Stevenson Patriots thank you very much everybody [Applause] what's here for Sammy what a great speech thank you I think Stanley did a fabulous job giving us the opportunity to reflect on the four years that we've had together we're going to uh if I could just have a choir come on up choir come on so we're going to call the choir up we're going to call the choir up and uh while we're in this space of looking back I want to take a minute and think about the relationships that have helped create who you all are for many of you those relationships have shaped you over time and really made you into the people that you are and I want to take a minute to recognize some special relationships I think it's important in moments like this to think about the family and friends that we have lost in our time together in high school and I would like for everyone to join together for a moment of silence for anyone that's impacted your life that you've lost in the last four years thank you very much so as we move forward we're going to hear next from our choir members perform the wonderful Stevenson alma mater but in order to do that I am going to need some help from a few of the folks in the audience so if you are a former Patriot if you are an alumni of Stevenson High School can you please stand up right now all of our alumni big round of applause for the alumni in the room thank you very much stay standing alumni stay standing look at that great group class of 2023 please stand up class of 2023 please stand up and now I am going to turn this over to Alice Newton uh our choir director and also a member of the graduating class of 2023 so that she can lead in the singing of the alma mater to [Music] is for your hearts we raise our songs [Music] [Applause] [Music] hello mama [Music] our voices [Music] [Applause] [Music] thank you very much choir one more round of applause for them all of our Senior Choir members and now we're going to hear the gubernator address which will look forward into our future today's speaker parents Ambush and prachi thank you Mr gobble good evening faculty staff families the Board of Education and of course the one and only class of 2023 with record-breaking athletic championships hallways filled with academic trophies and overall just being some of the most authentic and incredible people I have ever met this class has truly done it all so let's take a moment to celebrate ourselves with a big round of applause it is an honor to celebrate this Milestone with all of you both in pictures and in person it's a weird kind of interim like that Hidden World behind the waterfall you can't quite see it clearly but you know it's there sometimes it's inviting sometimes it's intimidating and the best part we're all going to be exploring it together in just a few moments our lives are going to pass through to the other side of that waterfall a jury that even Google Maps came to reroute back in elementary school my teacher once showed us a map of the world upside down theory was that the first Australian explorers would have knocked out the world relative to themselves a path forward with their perspective went to all of us today seems upside down graduates regardless of how similar our goals may be our maps are going to look different because inevitably we all see the world in different ways from research and AI to sustainable environment advocacy to protecting our country we are all walking on paths illuminated by so many diverse exciting Passions but just like modern world maps we all have elements in common as well especially today as we share this pivotal moment with the Thousand others in this Arena walking through the curtain of the waterfall and exploring this new world opens up a new stage for our generation of leaders to make the leaps we've been preparing for all this time the most challenging yet liberating fact is that we can't predict the future sure we'll have some badly timed ideas wrong decisions and multiple but they will all be matched with just as many if not more well-timed groundbreaking ideas excellent choices and meaningful milestones at each momentous step number of experiences you'll have in life it's the amount of life that you put into each experience it's a deep conversation you'll have with dorm mates and Mom car ride blasting music as a break between finals how immersed and dedicated you are in mastering that new skill to your satisfaction if there's anything that we've learned from years of forensic waving through it's that regardless of where we go how we get there that makes it so much more worthwhile each and every one of you is brimming with so many complexities and wonders it's not a good biograduate it's a homecoming that perfect feature is waiting for us right behind that waterfall class of 2023 it's been a pleasure your future is calling and I can't wait to see how you answered see you on the other side Ridley thank you [Applause] well I don't want to speak for Mr Frost or Mr gobble but I always feel that following our students is a tough act to follow so could we give one more round of applause to both of our students and I would like to Echo Mr Frost comments and congratulate all of our students and parents and family members who are here tonight at our advice Stevenson High School graduating class of 2020 23.

Woo! What's that? Let's go. Woo! Good morning and welcome to the Orange Pit. I'm Principal Mark Noel and what a great day we have to celebrate our seniors in front of us. We're also celebrating the community and our staff back there because it's been a team effort to get all of our seniors across the stage today. I have the privilege of announcing our first speaker today. Anna is going to be our salutatorian followed by Caitlin our valedictorian. Anna, it's all yours. Oh, shoot. Sorry. Class of 2023, we made it. We finally made it. All those times wondering if fourth mod would ever end and stressing to finish a test, project, or assignment has finally paid off. We spent our lives waiting for this moment, or at least these past four years, waiting, hoping that we could someday be in these seats. And yes, we should be excited for the future.

represented yourselves your school and your family with pride I congratulate all of you for your accomplishments and I look forward to learning of your future successes it is my pleasure to introduce who will share his thoughts with the senior class Ethan [Applause] good evening family friends facilitators and fellow graduates I am honored to be speaking in front of you today being able to share this moment with you all means so much to me the class of 2023 has finally reached the finish line of high school but we didn't achieve this alone if it wasn't for the support from our parents and facils this journey would have been an even bigger challenge than it already was to our friends for going along this journey with us and making each day better and more memorable as the class of 2023 we are approaching the end but that only Sparks another beginning today is the first glance at that new beginning and I'm so glad we got to share this final moment together this year specifically we have shared and experienced so many lasts ranging from the last day of school the last time seeing our favorite basil our last performance our last game our last time seeing Mr Reed stand on the table and many more amazing memories all these lasts can be bittersweet but we can't forget all the hard work and dedication that we put forth to reach these last these experiences should not be something we try to forget or regret but something we cherish and remember instead we should look ahead to all the firsts we will experience although things have come to a close this year we still have so much more to explore and discover in terms of high school we've reached the top and the thought of starting fresh can be scary our first time living alone or with someone who isn't family our first day of college or at a career our first time paying bills celebrating our first promotion and many more we must realize and acknowledge that all people have a different path and future we are sharing this moment today and what we do after this is what gives us our individuality these things should not be should these things should be looked forward to and will shape Us in the next chapter of our life looking towards that next chapter can be daunting but I truly believe the past four years of being at new tech have prepared us all for the real world in terms of providing with providing us with skills that are applicable to our futures looking back to our freshman year with the genius Hour project we all took a deep dive into our passion or something we were interested in little did my freshman self know that my presentation about piano would translate to my intended career as a music educator we are prepared for the future and have been provided with the resources to find our passion that could ultimately influence our career choice CSA projects have also prepared us to end a significant part a significant significant part of our lives in a healthy way and then reset for what is to come next we have completed so many projects in the last four years and are accustomed to launching a project then when working through and setting benchmarks for ourselves only when the final product is complete we can celebrate our hard work this is an important tradition that we can continue to celebrate today we launched the four-year project of high school after eighth grade and now we have finished up that project we're gathered here to celebrate and end this project in a CSA fashion during this project that we call high school we developed our collaborative oral communication and written communication skills these are things that we practice every day whether it's a group project public speaking or an essay we can use these skills for the rest of our lives like practicing my public speaking right now this shift of last into first can be scary but is something we have all prepared for the last four years looking back at all the memories achievements and events that we have experienced in the last four years we can truly say that we have reached the end and that we are ready to spark our next beginning congratulations to the class of 2023 we made it thank you Ethan it's my pleasure to introduce to you well not to you but to introduce to everyone else CSA facilitator Pete Warren [Applause] graduates faculty staff of CSA new Tech High School administrators of bcsc family and friends of the graduates is my honor to speak to you this evening I've been at CSA new tech as a facilitator since 2019.

There's an entire world of possibilities out there for us to take and make a difference. However, while it's important for us to look forward, we also have to value the memories and lessons we have learned along the way. As the great Dr. Taylor Swift says, "Hold on to the memories and they will hold on to you." No matter how much we enjoyed high school, or didn't enjoy it, we have all learned lessons to take with us into the future. For example, I remember my first ever day of high school. I'd gone to lunch and was walking back to my table. I tripped over a backpack and fell, spilling my lunch tray and food onto me and everyone around me. Being the new freshman that I was, I immediately burst into tears. Cut to today, I can now joke about the situation. My last day of senior year, I even had a full circle moment and tripped while walking up the stairs.

I've been teaching for 17 years I've been part of the lives of thousands of students and it's been my joy and privilege to be part of their lives I'll remember you guys as I begin my new adventure I wasn't going to do this it's your fault really which begins at the close of this address and that Adventures retirement six years ago I felt a restlessness in my life but couldn't quite put my finger on why I needed to shake my life up a little bit and think through some things and set some new goals I've always been a fan of the actor Martin Sheen and saw that he was in a kind of an obscure movie called The Way my wife Carla and I decided to watch it and I knew when the movie ended that my adventure was calling me I was going to hike the Camino de Santiago the following summer in fact five years to the day from today I did that and after much planning my dream became a reality the word Camino is Spanish for path Journey or way the Camino de Santiago would take me on a journey from Pamplona Spain to Santiago de Compostela in Galicia Spain it was going to be a difficult 35-day hike over more than 500 miles of terrain I'd be joining more than 325 000 people that summer who made the same pilgrimage I'd never done anything like that before so I was apprehensive and excited all at the same time just like you as graduates are apprehensive and excited countless others have done this before and we we are here to help you on your journey your years here at CSA new tech were a very important part of your life's path so far the pillars of trust respect and responsibility you've learned here are the same values that sustain me on my journey on the first day when I was walking out of Pamplona it was raining it was 45 degrees and it was just absolutely miserable I'd gone about seven miles halfway up a mountain in the Pyrenees and when I stopped I had to change my socks they were soaked as I was drying my feet off a couple from England stopped and I looked really pitiful at the time just check and see if I was okay I told them what I was doing the man took pity on me and gave me his trekking poles I was going to buy some in Pamplona but there were no stores open at 6 30 A.M he knew that I would need them especially on the way down the mountain because the trail for about a mile and a half was nothing but mud and softball sized rocks I learned that day how the motto the Camino provides was true that I could trust that on my journey there would be support and help for me in my time of need as I hiked I met 30 or people from 31 Nations spanning the six continents around the world I found that the pilgrims the pilgrims approached each other with mutual respect we found ways to connect though we were coming from many different perspectives and backgrounds oftentimes we spoke different languages but we learn to Value each individual sometimes walking together when we were lonely sometimes letting each other have space when we needed to Journey alone for a little while and as much as possible we tried not to storm not to snore and disturb each other at night in the large sleeping rooms that we shared I had to take a lot of responsibility in other ways that I wasn't accustomed to as I made my pilgrimage no matter how I tried and how blistered I was I was responsible for getting myself back on the trail every morning it was up to me to find meals and a place to sleep each night to keep my valuables secure I learned a lot about agency and found ways to meet every challenge along the way in the end I found great personal satisfaction in getting to my goal I got to visit a magnificent cathedral in my final day words cannot describe the the awe in that place it was worth all the days of just putting one front one foot in front of the other making progress slowly but surely my journey across Spain was later in life but your journey is just now beginning you will have hard times when you get blisters and it will be hard to walk you'll have days like the day when I walk no almost crawled up a hill that was a 30 incline thinking I was about to die and there was a cafe at the top of that Hill where I got the best tasting Coca-Cola I've ever had in my life you're starting a Camino a path a journey an adventure here's what I hope for you I hope you will be inspired that a passion and a goal will light you up on the inside and you'll be excited to wake up in the morning and pursue that path with all your heart I hope that you will be bold you won't see the entire path laid out before you there will be some sharp turns and some steep hills to climb but you guys are ready be bold enough to take that first step I hope that other pilgrims are there to walk alongside you on your journey they'll be there to pick you up when you fall hold your hands when you're scared and give you what you need to make it to your destination your facilitators your parents your friends and all who love you wish you well we hope you'll send us a postcard along the way in Camino [Applause] [Music] [Applause] CSA senior Abby shoot would like to share a farewell message with her class [Applause] do you remember right before graduating eighth grade wondering what even high school was like well I can tell you my four years here were not a little eighth grade Abby had in mind I can remember waking up on my first day of school at CSA on the first morning to a week spending extra time on my outfit it was a blast for my first fika it's my first halftime performance it's my first marching band Invitational to my first band concert and my first house games high school was awesome we were ending the third quarter and getting ready to go into the break when we were told we'd have an extra two weeks of online school after the break everyone was so excited to have an extra two weeks of break two weeks turned into one month and then into the fourth quarter being fully online it went from sitting in a classroom to sitting at home on a zoom call this was not what any of us were expecting it was different to say the least online school was new for the most of us including the facils switching teaching styles to recording lessons instead of lecturing them and having to communicate on zoom and other online resources was a challenge in itself facils and students struggled to reach each other and connect when not everyone had a reliable internet to ask access even with online school being new and foreign we still pushed through as a CSA family to fight expectations and made it to the end of our first school year summer break felt somewhat normal some of us had socially distant picnics or Gatherings with small groups of friends we wanted to have a normal summer we then reached sophomore year with everyone being able to return to school everyone was glad to be back and learning with everyone else Thanksgiving break rolled around and suddenly we were back to online school although this time we were better prepared we defied expectations last time and we're going to keep on defying them Christmas and New Year's came and went and we moved to a hybrid schedule half of the school was there on Monday and Tuesday everyone was online Wednesday and the other half was at school on Thursday and Friday the hybrid schedule was the best and the worst of both kinds of learning during the past two years we finally ended the fourth quarter in person that year and our class was able to have our first end of your house games ever boom We Justified expectations once again junior year was by far our most difficult year most of us were in physics and constructed cardboard boats to test in the north side pool everything is starting to finally feel normal again some of us were in advanced biology and paddled a kayak or canoe around the lagoons doing reports on the properties around the lake junior year was the pre-game to the end of the mountain climb senior year even though we felt up to our eyes and homework we still defied expectations and we are more than ready than ever to the last push to the end senior year senior year the final Mountain climb to reach the top of our high school careers all the learning and preparation from the past 13 years of education has prepared us for this semester one consisted of applications to multiple colleges sending in job applications lining up internships and getting the boxes checked off to cross the finish line many of us applied for multiple scholarships and applications for living learning communities as well as other opportunities at our colleges of choice or future jobs the college credits that we have been earning over the years are being applied to something for our future semester two was completing our classes and checking off the final boxes to earn our diplomas this Monumental checkpoint in our lives is just the start of the next chapter we're going to write our class is the definition of defining expectations whether it be College straight into work going into the military joining a trade school or something else we have defied the expectations of high school graduation and life beyond graduation our class is the definition of defining expectations and we don't plan on stopping anytime soon [Applause] at this time is with great pride that I introduce to our superintendent Dr Roberts the CSA new tech class of 2023 Dr Roberts [Applause] thank you Mr Reed before I start I'd be remiss on this Memorial Day weekend if I didn't acknowledge the veterans that we might have in the gymnasium if I could ask our veterans to please stand so we could recognize you foreign thank you so much for your service good evening everybody family members friends and staff members thank you for all you have done to support our graduates as they worked through the seemingly endless number of barriers placed in front of them to land in this place tonight as graduates of CSA new Tech High School graduates congratulations to you for the abilities you have displayed during your entire School career but especially during your high school years as you maneuvered past those barriers placed in front of you and demonstrated you have completed the ascent of an important mountain of opportunity the earning of a high school diploma your hard work gives you the title of graduate CSA new Tech High School I referenced your high school years and those years probably deserve an extra mention or two your freshman year was blindsided by a global pandemic and you still felt its impact over your next two years it is my hope that this senior year this senior year felt relatively normal to you but I realized that over the course of your four years many typical high school experiences may have been missed or at least were adversely affected but you were resilient you persevered you overcame and you are here tonight you're going to walk up to the stage to arrive at the top of a mountain that represents at least 12 years of school you will then walk off this stage to begin another ascent an Ascent up the mountain of life what is on top of this mountain will be different for each of you the way you measure happiness will be different the way you determine success will be different the path you take toward achievement will be different but there are a few things that I ask for all of you keep to keep the same and I will quote from the wonderful philosopher Tim McGraw from his song humble and kind hold the door say please and thank you don't steal don't cheat don't lie I know you've got mountains to climb but always stay humble and kind everybody is climbing a mountain and we can't always be sure what that mountain is my mountain is not your Mountain but you're being nice and polite doing the right things helps both of us with our climbs and contributes to the success of our ascent always stay humble and kind when the dreams you're dreaming come to you when the work you put in is realized let yourself feel the pride but always stay humble and kind when you are able to climb your Mountain to get to its peak accomplish your dream do take time to celebrate feel good about yourself you have earned that using tonight as an example you reach the top of this mountain called School celebrate it be proud but not at the expense of others that is detrimental to their client always stay humble and kind don't expect a free ride from no one don't hold a grudge or a chip and here's why bitterness keeps you from flying always stay humble and kind it is much better to earn your way to the top of the mountain versus being given a free pass determine the most appropriate method to get there then put your head down and start to climb remembering to always stay humble and kind members of the CSA new class of 2023 by the power of vested made by the state of Indiana and our Bartholomew Consolidated School Corporation Board of Trustees I hereby certify you as graduates of our school system congratulations thank you Dr Roberts as we prepare for the distribution of diplomas Please be aware that we have provided a photographer to take a picture of each graduate as they cross the stage also so that every graduate's name can be heard please hold your individual Applause until the last graduate crosses the stage and then we'll celebrate our entire class together Mr Schroeder will now lead us in recognizing each member of the new tech class of 2023.

[Applause] all right um we're going to get started reading names in just a few minutes but we have a few more announcements before we get going first of all uh how embarrassing I ran up there to say hello early and I didn't say who I was I it's my honor to be the principal of Stevenson High School my name is Troy gobble great to see you all many of you probably remember me from such wonderful zooms as how do I get on to see my class tomorrow or when are we coming back next week right so you you probably had a lot of that over the time you're with me I think our namesake Ally Stevenson was a fabulous speaker and whenever we have an event like this I think it's always important to put his voice in the room and uh Stevenson spoke to a graduating class at Princeton University and shared this important bit of wisdom students don't be afraid to learn don't be afraid to read to study to work to try to know because at the very best you can know very little and don't Above All Things be afraid to think for yourself nothing has been in my judgment more disheartening about the Contemporary scene the last several years in America than the growth of the popularity of unreasoned to my way of thinking it is not the years in your life but the life in your years that count in the long run you'll have more fun you'll do more and you'll get more you'll give more satisfaction the more you know the more you have worked and the more you have lived for yours is a great adventure in a stirring time in the annals of men tonight I do want to announce uh on uh we have 14 of your fellow Luckily, this time I didn't burst into tears, but was able to laugh it off. It made me realize these past four years at East, I've learned that in the end, it's not that serious. You have to learn to be able to laugh at yourself, or else you'll be too worried about embarrassment to get anything accomplished. In life, it's important to be able to embrace the stumbles go through and use it to help you get further ahead. And let's face it, these past four years, there's been a lot of stumbles. We were just learning the ropes of high school when we were forced into lockdown and had to learn to adapt to learning through a computer. We went through sophomore year grappling with block scheduling and hybrid learning. And sure, in the moment it felt really annoying, tedious, and frustrating, but I can now confidently say we're all very comfortable in using resources like Quizlet and SparkNotes to help us out.

it is amazing to feel the intensity of different emotions filling this gymnasium this evening as we close this chapter of our live story and begin to look towards what lies ahead family members you're probably wondering where the years have gone as you Marvel at your graduates accomplishments it doesn't seem that long ago when these young adults we honor today were off to their first day of kindergarten of course living through those years between kindergarten and graduation may have seemed like an eternity for the students and likely for some of you as well nonetheless there's great news it's safe to say we've made it this goal has been accomplished and tonight we graduate as a class of 2023. you may applaud us now [Applause] when I found out that I was going to speak tonight I was quickly given some do's and don'ts for those that know me my sense of humor tends to be well a dry sarcastic sense of humor and I quickly found out it would be in my best interest to shy away from too much joke telling or funny stories about Mr Baker [Music] so I thought it best to take a more serious route and talk about an important word accomplishment I'd like to tell you about a Spanish conquistador Hernan Cortez and talk about how he found his accomplishment history states that when he and his crew first reach land Cortez quickly told the crew they were going to burn down their ships in order to sink them now I wasn't there but I'm guessing his crew may have had a few arguments about whether this was a good idea or not it was said that they didn't actually burn the ships and sink them but instead dismantled the ships and used the parts as resources Cortez's point in doing this was to force a crew to see a couple of things clearly one they weren't going back to where they came from and two there was only more to learn and accomplish going Inland instead of looking back hopefully you're all still with me here's a point in the story Cortez's idea in fact parallels what we are doing right here right now this evening to be clear we have no intention of burning down the school or Sinking anything however we have no reason to return to what we have been or what we have done here in this place Lafitte finishing high school has been accomplished in addition there's only more to learn and accomplish by going forward to wherever life is taking us next our pass will split from this day forward and that may be part of the challenge but unlike Cortez and his crew we have multiple resources that can continue to grow us as people as young adults facing new circumstances whether they be beginning College joining the military or entering the workforce the definition of accomplishment is simply achieving something successfully I hope all of you find yourself seeing your accomplishments clearly here tonight Mahatma Gandhi once said this about accomplishments every worthwhile accomplishment big or little has its stages of drudgery and Triumph a beginning a struggle and a victory maybe you sit here thinking back on some of those struggles and victories now My Hope for all of us as a 2023 graduating class of Bluffton High School is that we can forever remember that the end result of all of our hard work and efforts was the diploma placed in our hands here tonight here before our families friends teachers we can proudly accept these diplomas to Mark our many accomplishments and confidently look toward our future congratulations once again to the class of 2023 thank you [Music] good evening graduating class of 2023 I have a question for you this evening actually I have several questions for you maybe the same questions you have been asking yourself lately as you are about to begin the next part of your journey questions like what am I going to do now where am I supposed to go from here who am I and who am I meant to be you'll have many decisions to make very soon and those decisions will set the course for your journey here's an interesting little fact did you know that an adult makes on average 35 000 decisions a day no wonder making decisions can make us anxious and stressed out as you chart your course there'll be many decisions and choices you will have to make who you will become depends on those decisions legendary basketball coach John Wooden summed it up well he says there's a choice in there is a choice you have to make in everything you do so keep in mind the choice you make you he is saying that we not only make decisions we are also made by those decisions every one of us is where we are today is that the result of decisions we have made up to this point decisions powerfully shapes Our Lives Vince Lombardi further this point when he says truth is knowing that your character is shaped by your everyday choices when you know who you are you will have the courage to live fully who you are made to be an interesting way to think about this is to make decisions that your 80 year old self and your 10 year old self will be proud of your 80 year old self cares about the long-term compounding of the decisions of today and your 10 year old self remind you to have some fun along the way satisfied both for growth and fulfillment since we're talking about choices and how they Define us I thought it'd be good and appropriate to share choices for The Graduate from Todd gong work here are just three of them first he says choose your friends wisely spend your time with people who encourage you to be your best character influences character both good and bad second he says choose to lead things better than they were when you found them this applies to any job and your interactions with people as well and lastly he says choose to be great but not at the expense of people relationships are the foundation to your purpose in this life value every single one of them graduates I think the overall theme Here is that every choice matters Lou Holtz says it best life is a matter of choices God gave us the power to think love create plan imagine and choose I believe the greatest power we have is the power to choose every day you have a choice how you see the world determines the world you see look for the good you see I believe that we are not given a good life and we're not given a bad life we're given a life it is up to us to make it good or bad to help you remember the power of your choices a gift for you has been placed under your seat go ahead take a look some of that might be taped a little stronger than normal graduates if you forget everything else tonight just remember what's written on your keychain graduating class of 2023 make it a great life or not the choice is truly yours the good news is you are graduating from one of the best high schools in the state of Indiana every year the U.S news and World Report generates a list of the top high schools in the entire nation Bluffton High School was ranked number one in all of Wells County number five in the entire Fort Wayne metropolitan area top 25 percent in the state of Indiana and the top 19 percent in the entire nation along with that achievement our school has been a four-star School five times since 2010.

And while we might think that through graduating, it's all behind us, the truth is there's going to be a lot more stumbles. We're about to enter a whole new era of our life, one where there's not going to be parents and teachers every step of the way behind us. And that is incredibly scary. There's going to be times when you trip and fall back and times when you try to move too fast and even fall up. But it's important to use the experiences we've had at East, the good and the bad, to help guide us through the trips and falls. Use those lessons to not only get past the stumbles, but to surpass them. One last lesson I've learned though is that you can't create a game plan for your life. Going into my time here at East, I had a whole vision of what my four years were going to look like.
