Naggy, I guess. Like you know like when you're nagging someone. But um I know there's a better word for that. But for the most part, a visual schedule can kind of just help show them exactly what to expect and then they can kind of, you know, it's a it's a lighter version of like reminding them and then reviewing the visuals prior to the start of an activity. So, priming your kid um to like of what to expect next. So just saying like, hey, first we're going to do this and then we're going to do that. Like first it's sandbox time and then we're going to move on to um fingerpainting. Um and then providing token boards or having a token board to provide reinforcement for expected behaviors. Now, if your kid is not used to token boards, um that will be something to probably incorporate before trying to implement it um in in this kind of environment.

Um but if your kid already understands how to use a token board, I think this would be a really great time and opportunity to incorporate that into um summer camp. And then here you have like you know support schedules an example preparing for changes helps with transitions and moving to non-preferred activities. Um and then of course token boards um it's a set number of tokens required to earn a particular reinforcer. It can be used across all activities. Um it increases motivation by providing periodic reinforcement from a counselor. um starts with a small number of tokens required to earn a reinforcer. So, you start off small, so it's like three to five tokens and then they get a break or they get to play with their favorite toy or they get to go outside for a little bit, whatever it may be at that moment. Um and then tokens are given frequently and with a relatively small amount of effort to start.

So, we start off small and then we kind of start, you know, um putting in more effort into earning a token. So it's like completing one activity, they get a token. Then once we have that established, we then move on to completing two to three activities before they can earn a token. Um because again the token board is is very um minimal uh minimal reinforcement uh that we want to use at that moment. And then we want to kind of you know fade that token board to then hopefully with the activities within themselves in summer camp become more intrinsically motivating. And then here you kind of have examples of token boards um and how kids earn their reinforcers. And then we have choice boards. So these this specifically um provides visual choices of tasks. So you it's not in an order in any specific order.

Um, and it can be used to offer reinforcement choices, but it also helps them um have control over situations, which helps to increase cooperation. So, being able to provide that and be like, "Hey, we have all of the stuff that we can do right now, like what do you want to do?" And giving them options always helps increase um follow through on their end. And then like I said, using first then cards. So this is kind of breaking it down um a little bit more from a visual schedule and just showing two specific activities like first we're doing this one and then we're doing this one. And we usually use this for activities that are very non-preferred. Um, so we we want to make sure that if we're first doing something that's non-preferred, then we are um following along with something that is very preferred, highly preferred.

All right. So, uh, reinforcement strategies. So, we want to make sure that we're using descriptive phrases to provide reinforcement for specific behavior. So, if our kid is has trouble with um lining up with their peers and they do that, we want to be very specific on the praise. Great job lining up with your group. That was awesome. Um and then there's also non-contingent reinforcement, which provides ongoing brief reinforcement throughout the day. So, this would be more like if our kid is um an aloper, we want to make sure that we're incorporating non-contingent escape, which would be like maybe every 10 minutes they get to, you know, walk around away from the activities and then come back. So, what we're trying to do is technically satiate the need to escape by just providing it a little more often uh during their camp time. And then end of day reports.

So reviewing your kids camp day can help facilitate discussions at home about the day the day's activities. And learning about any challenging times can help make the next day more successful. So, if they had a really hard time towards the end of the day, being able to communicate that with your kid and being able to discuss it and find out like why um they had a really hard time at the end of the day can help um set set them up for success the next day. You know, maybe at the end of the day they need more frequent breaks or maybe they need a longer break at the beginning or maybe they just need easier tasks at the end of the day and not so difficult for them. um or just things like that as an example. So yeah, so that is um some you know other uh tips on um for summer camp specifically.

[Music] thank you I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands one nation under God indivisible with liberty and justice for all thank you so just a quick run through uh what we're going to do we are going to have a couple of speakers we're going to have some opening remarks a welcome some special Awards and then the team presentations and then at the end of the program our female and male athlete of the year so there's a lot to do we're also going to have a fantastic dinner and we are looking forward to a great night of celebrating our seniors all right so guys if you could just give me a second again just want to welcome everybody to uh our senior dinner I can't believe it's June uh I can't believe that that all of you are seniors it really has uh flown by these last four years um this senior class is is special for a lot of reasons but you know thinking about it on the uh on the car ride over here I was talking to my daughter Angelica about you know this class and and what event and you know she reminded me that this was the your freshman year was the coven Year and that March is when you know everything everything's shut down you lost a shot at your uh your first opportunity to play a Spring sport and that was rough and then the soccer uh your second year the sophomore year uh you come in and it was just so much unknown you know we didn't know if the team was gonna have to shut down for quarantine we didn't know if our opponent was going to shut down and quarantine there were days that we would have two different opponents you know we'd lose a game because of a shutdown and then we'd pick up you know team and maybe we were home maybe we were away maybe it was a far distance maybe it was a close distance maybe they came to us it was just so much uncertainty and you know the way that these athletes and these coaches handled themselves uh shown later on especially in their Junior and Senior year the resiliencies that you show um your hard work that you put in your perseverance your dedication to your sport in many cases your dedication to multiple Sports so it really says a lot about you and before we move on this is being live streamed so I do want to thank all of your parents and your family for the opportunities that they gave us to be a part of your life and and to watch you compete and you know the best part of my day is you know watching watching all of you athletes compete so I thank you for for that opportunity hopefully before we graduate in a couple weeks you're taking time to thank your coaches uh our athletic trainers uh our staff um you know we've got we've got we've got the best coaching staff I say this every year and I really do mean it we have the best coaching staff in the state you have the best athletic trainers in the state um and that's why we do so much um I'd like to acknowledge our our Board of Education I know our board president Jim Smith is going to speak later on and introduce everybody but I want to thank them for their support um you guys know what this looked like when you're a little kid growing up in Clifton and you looked at your Fields you know what it looked like two years ago and you look at our Fields now and and everything that we have and anytime we need something we get it which whether it's additional coaches uh because you know participation's been so high we get it whether whether we need uh supplies we get everything so we thank our board of education for that also like to thank our Central Administration Dr robitosi and and his administration for being just always extra supportive of us uh they're active in in on our lives they're at the president games they're always engaged we appreciate that uh Mr hamda and our and our vice principals want to thank them for everything that they do you know Mr Hobbs is always awesome when I ask them you know if we can do something we get out early for state tournament yeah absolutely you know those are good for kids yes and as long as the answer is yes to that question then he makes it happen so thank you Mr Honda with that uh Dr robitosi is running late so I am going to ask our next speaker Mr Hamden to come up and give a welcome foreign [Applause] hello everybody and welcome to our senior athletic awards dinner it's so great to see all of you here first off I want to congratulate all of our graduating seniors if everybody can just give give each other a round of applause you know I was thinking of what would be the the thing that connects all of you in this room what is it that makes you all special and I thought about this in terms of the students the trainers the coaches the Board of Ed our Administration and there's one word really that best describes what you all have and it's commitment you guys have commitment to one another and when I say that I'm talking about the students the commitment that you have to your team and to your coaches is something that is not seen very often the commitment that your coaches have to you there is no population there is no person that comes to me more often advocating for students more than a coach advocating for one of their players and I'm not just talking about something on the field I'm talking about things off the field too it's unlike anything I've seen and that's that commitment that the coaches have towards their kids the commitment that the trainers have the the endless hours that they put in and of course the commitment that our board of education has and the Relentless support that they have for our athletics department so essentially what I'm trying to say here is that's what sets you apart that's why everybody in this room is going to be successful and that's what's going to make you guys great so again I thank you guys for coming out tonight I truly do and keep being committed because that's what's going to get you guys places at this point at this time I'd like for you guys to give a round of applause to Mr Smith who's going to be coming up to speak and I thank you thank you yep tonight [Music] on behalf of the Board of Education we are so proud of each and every one of you for the dedication the devotion and the representation that we make as a Clinton athlete being a Mustang is definitely a privilege that you have and the baby you must say he doesn't leave when you graduate you are always a Mustang if you leave you'll be coming alumni you must say that is what makes Clifton different than many other towns we are united we are dedicated your devotion and your hard work surely comes through the board supports you in every way and with the board mat a few years ago we said you know some of our facilities are not up to far in fact foreign was probably one of the worst spaceful fields around the board got dedicated we looked at ways we could improve and now we have a state of New York baseball and softer field as Woodrow Wilson at the high school brand new tennis tennis courts fighting when we were told we needed because by now we can host tournaments so again the board went out brought the architects in see how we could get five Forts and amazingly they did that the band the band had their bag sealed it was full of dishes and couldn't get the grass to grow or whatever the board saw that and he said we have to put a new field up there as well to the coaches we are so proud of your representation and the work that you do for Clifton without you these kids would not be here without you many of you that are moving on and moving on into sports somewhere else that's the cause of your coaches that's the cause of the dedication that they made to you please make sure to thank your coaches but you know nobody else nowhere wants to be anywhere else on Friday nights when our football team takes the field or on Saturdays or other days when our soccer team takes the field or a lacrosse scene or our cheerleaders this year they've been brought it home wrestling basketball volleyball fields [Music] and oh sorry yes I can feel my gosh but anyhow there's a couple more seconds guys and I'll be done so what I think maybe split screen different than everybody else is your dedication and it reminds me of this story real quick that I'll tell you about a church that needed somebody every day to ring the bells and the bells were way up at the top of these staring room stairs so now we take people coming to apply to ring the bell every Sunday and they interviewed they see how they ring the bell and there's one guy that comes up and he has no arms but he's dedicated and he wants to have that job and they say to the guy how could you possibly bring this value out of the arms so he show up with him he let us down the stairs because I'm running up and boom hits the bell with his face he says wow this is pretty amazing you did a great job can you show us again so again dedication you go down boom hits it with his face he says this is great so every Sunday you go up run up those stairs hit the valley of his face now he's getting a little bit of space to get a little bit deformed okay so he's having a little struggle get up the stairs he gets up the ring the bells and falls down and all these people come around they're like the score man this poor man does anyone know who he is about [Music] his dedication don't give up don't let anything stop you from succeeding because you can and you will so now I'd like to introduce my fellow members of the board that are here okay uh we have Dr Lucy Danny Mrs food ambassador Mr Adam Paris Mr Anthony Santiago [Applause] and Mr Richie Maria [Applause] as I started this site saying how proud We Are we truly are proud to be aboard that supports your sports and always remember it's a great day to be a Mustang thank you all thank you for president trip uh before we move on with the appreciation Awards uh this is an exercise we carry out every year if you're a coach and you're and you're an uh alumni just stand up please thank you guys we won't ask what year you graduated but uh I just I just wanted to show the seniors and and the parents watching at home the families watching at home just how much Clifton Athletics means to people that you know the people who just stood up the men and women who decided to come back and teach here decided to come back and Coach here that Clifton really is a special place and I think more than half of our staff is is alumni so this one that means uh that means a lot okay our first appreciation award and I'm not going to ask her to come up because she did have a couple surgeries this year I'll deliver uh it goes to miss martial Miss marcione is hands down the most important foreign is hands down the most important uh person in this department um without her we're not sitting at this dinner um you know buses scheduling um communicating with officials communicating with coaches handling um the companies that we deal with our vendors handling pretty much any issue that that comes up so just want to thank Ms marcione and we really learned a valuable lesson this year when she was out with surgery so the coaches are certainly happy too because I was in a much better mood but then he came back so yeah oh yeah [Applause] I probably should have left the microphone standing all right our next appreciation award goes to someone who really never says no whenever whenever uh the department needs something hey we need a last-minute score key for at softball we need a site manager for hockey uh we had two coaches with Colvin and they needed somebody to fill in at a swim meet that was at 7 30 at night on a Wednesday I think it was um you know this guy does he does anything that we ask he's great with the kids I'm not gonna let him rap again like he did in the talent show when he comes up here but uh Mr sarzano come on up [Music] thank you Steve here we go all right now we're going to get into our MVPs we go season by season obviously fall winter than spring uh we'll stop somewhere in the middle to eat all the food is going to be in the Next Room there's there's two Buffet lines with two sets of cafes with two lines so we'll be able to move in and out when you come up uh coaches you may want to come over here there's a step uh MVPs will come up you may want to come over here there is a step there's no step on this side so just some housekeeping first up is uh cross country you're going to ask coach pop this to come on up [Applause] going rate hello everybody it's a pleasure to be here again I'd like to thank every senior member of our cross country team boys and girls and I'll be up later to talk about voice track but I also want you as everyone had spoken already has done to look around because in the last couple of weeks your high school students for the last time and some of you may never see each other again after graduation um but as was said earlier you're a Mustang for life but please make sure the right end of the Mustang for the rest of your life all right um thank you that's behind us now I I get to be up here for cross country so that's both boys and girls both the boys and girls who are League champions they work really hard to keep that the street they've got going kept the way it is boys also run won the county for the third year in a row and I get to honor both a girl MVP senior and a boy MVP senior our outstanding boy even though there were a great number of talented dedicated seniors really put together an outstanding season [Applause] thank you Sean well done much deserved okay interestingly enough the boys team had a lot of seniors the girls team had one senior so they have a lot of people coming back but the one girl senior we had is the best cross-country Runner in the history of Clifton High School all right that's a Remy Dubai [Applause] great job very proud thank you thank you [Applause] all right coach [Applause] good evening everybody um first and foremost this night is about you guys our senior athletes right so I uh I love this night it's all about you guys and uh we're here to celebrate you so uh thank you for for all that you've done for us over the last four years um I know I had our own dinner right so we celebrate our football players at our dinner however um I'll do all the guys that we are losing this year we have six six uh young men going on to play college sports of those six uh four are going to college for free so I think that's a really really big deal um our MVP um you know a three-year starter for the most part uh he played you did play as a freshman so we you know for you could say he's a four-year player for us there's nothing that he can do and he might have done things that he didn't want to do but he just did it anyway because that's the kind of guy that he is um there's there's nothing I wouldn't do for him that's why I'm here tonight my other my oldest son he's got a baseball game right now and I can't I'm dying waiting to go but I would never take this away from you Joseph Gable [Applause] s foreign [Applause] gymnastics [Music] [Applause] had a very successful season posting two very well-deserved wins after a very very long drive they also posted a pixie plate finish at the Championships uh first of all I'd like to just thank coach shackle for all of her help she's been my absolute backbone for the last two years I'm sorry I don't want to make a crap um from getting practices started before I get there to ride on a bus with the girls sometimes craziness um you know I'm I'd be lost without her so thank you so much the team would have been successful without the contributions and hard work from our two senior captains Amelia pachowsky and Anna Crespo these ladies are two of the hardest working athletes I've ever had the pleasure of coaching Anna joined the team her junior year and it was an instant fit and his personality has always been a fan favorite never failing to make any of us smile her hard work and dedication over the past two years earned her second team all-county honors on floor exercise this past season I'm so glad that she joined the team last year and I was able to work with such a great person and we'll be continuing her education at Eastwood college for ultrasound technology Amelia has been on the team since her freshman year she was in the starting lineup every meet eventually making her way up to the all-around Amelia has always been reliable dependable taking on a leadership role for sophomore year her condominator has always been a staple on the team and I can't thank her enough for that anytime I needed her she's always been there all of her card work over the last few years also earned her second Team all County honors on ball I've been fortunate to have been able to work with such a smart and talented individual the past four years she will be attending Rutgers Newark in the fall majoring in graphic design now they're my only two seniors and it is very hard to put a decision on who my MPP is because they both work so hard and given me everything that I've Ever Needed so this year's MVP for gymnastics is [Applause] thank you thanks coach thanks Dustin coach [Applause] [Music] soccer team but also to older seniors that we have over here for dinner our seniors this year were not on each which will be attending East Stroudsburg University can you get him out of the bus [Applause] cane University [Applause] see them all and our last senior is Leila Flores Saint Francis University this year mvpe will go to the player who met the team since freshman year with most goals she became a captain of sophomore year to her natural congratulations is okay item 7.1 is our monthly report of progress from our strategic plan in Vision 308 presenting this evening on English Learners is Renee Sartor I don't mind a little louder no good evening so tonight I'd like to talk briefly about the English learner department and how we've contributed to the envisioned 308 goals for this year so our goals for 2026 as we look forward to continuing with Envision 308 is to have a continuous cohesive services for English Learners from Early Childhood up to high school and a plan for continual Improvement and a way to monitor the effectiveness of the different programs for the English learners so for this year one of the indicators of success that we were looking at was to strengthen the Core Curriculum and instruction across the grade levels and monitor their effectiveness so this year core teams in dual language and English learner Services worked on bridging instruction and programming from lower to the upper levels there was extensive representation and input on the new language arts and social studies committees that includes the piloting of new materials by the Dual language and English learner teachers a second indicator was to develop common expectations and a way to monitor instruction of English Learners in the various program models so towards this goal kindergarten through 8th grade English learner teachers refined common expectations for instruction and piloted intervention programs at Junior High teachers piloted and they'll expand to other schools and El strategies course which is going to Target language specific goals for the students and dual language teams develop specific look fors for best practices and conducted walkthroughs another indicator of success was to implement a system of assessment that aligns with the goals of the El programs specifically monitoring both English and Spanish proficiency kindergarten through 8th grade English learner teachers piloted various assessments and provided feedback as we developed criteria for monitoring the progress of yells during the year and this work will continue over the summer dual language continues to refine the assessment practices looking at available resources taking into consideration the adaption of a new language arts curriculum at elementary and Junior High and students in fifth and 8th grade dual language participated in Spanish language proficiency testing this spring so this year also we continued professional development for administrators and staff of both special education and English learners preschool through 12th grade we looked at the problem solving for English Learners including how to differentiate instruction and provide interventions the English learner and special education departments have shared expertise with staff and administrators throughout the year to enhance the knowledge of best practices and problem solving for those duly identified students a final indicator we had for this year was to continue to tailor professional development of the district initiatives such as the literacy and math Frameworks and the new K-8 language arts on social studies curriculum for the teachers of dual language and English learners so during this school year for this during school Improvement days and teacher Institute days we held specific sessions for those teachers and we offered Choice Boards of professional development activities to English learner and dual language teachers looking towards next year are indicators of success that we want to look towards implementing would be to expand professional development on the intersection between English Learners and special education to include additional administrators and special education groups and English Learners staff from Early Childhood through High School we will refine and expand the systems to monitor instruction for English Learners and dual language Learners through the implementation of common instructional expectations assessments observations and walkthroughs will continue to provide professional development choices that are tailored to English Learners and dual language administrators and staff and lastly we'll monitor the growth in the Dual language program to determine if additional space or resources are needed our work in the district that we do in the English learner Department connects to the overall District work in the area of Finance we utilize title III Grant funds to provide supplemental materials programs and services to the students and families of English learners our contribution to Student Learning is that students improve their overall academic performance through developing their English language proficiency and some do this while also developing Spanish language proficiency additionally our work supports the language acquisition of students to make the academic content comprehensible to them within the framework set forth by the district and the other level departments we assist in Community Partnerships by Bridging the cultural linguistic and knowledge gaps that exist between our multilingual families and the Community Partners we also work with the district departments and schools in partnership with the bilingual parent advisory committee so those have been the contributions this year from the English learner Department thank you so much for that report Renee uh board do you have any questions in regards to the English learner's annual report okay you no you go first no I I I'll admit uh this was crazy um and I'm sorry I didn't get this in advance but it's not really too much of a question but I see that there's about 2200 English Learners coming in for 2023 um representing what about 13 of our population and then if you add former El students we're probably looking at a good quarter of our population for at some point English Learners so I mean it's something that we just Community should know and this is something that we need to keep an eye on and do better for our students okay um thank you for all all the information great information lots of great work happening um I have one question and then just one comment that is um for for everyone so my first question is I noticed in the report that there was a jump in students exiting the program year over year from four to eight percent uh is that where is that in the trend is that typical is it eight percent more usually the trend is four percent or kind of where is or is it somewhere else I would say eight percent is closer to the trend so that drop and that's been since I've been here were two years of covid where not every student even took the test or attended School regularly or were remote or not remote so that's why you see that that higher amount of students that have exited okay yeah that makes sense thank you my other comment or just this is mostly to my fellow board members is that I was reviewing the plan um or I was reviewing the updates in the presentations um prior to the board meeting and one thing that kept happening to me was I was like oh but did it work did it have an impact was it effective and so I don't know if there's this is something we can decide as a board kind so that we can have direction to our Administration but for example I was thinking um what is the way that you monitor you know what is the way that you monitor Effectiveness because you talk about monitoring Effectiveness what was the outcome of the piloted intervention I don't know exactly what what that was uh what was the result of the walkthroughs was the PD effective you know um and how do you know if that PD was effective so I think there's some direction we give to our Administration so that they might be able to give us some other more tangible kind of outcomes of what the impact of all the great work that is happening I think that would speak to that work and then also give us an opportunity to you know give you feedback on what um on current practices and what we might look to in the future certainly so thank you and I think one of the things that we're talking about potentially is making sure that directions are clear um as we're leaving the board meeting that there's no confusion so I I agree yeah I'm not asking for those yeah those those things I'm just speaking as a comment I'm sorry to interrupt no no but yeah okay so if we were asking for those things I would say I'm not asking for those things it's just a comment head go ahead I had three quick questions so um I noticed that the K through 12 or K-2 had larger numbers and I know that's because we're waiting for them to exit access so I'm not I'm not surprised they're larger numbers but um I noticed that they are larger numbers than they've they're very significant so my question is is this also a reflection of the increase in El students that we have moving into the district yeah definitely so right as students enter as kindergarten for second grade students at those younger grades it does take several years for them to exit out of the process so as students more and more are entering you'll see that cluster in the lower grade level so my second question is I get this question all the time so I apologize but I'm going to ask it just because we I filled it a lot do you have any kind of like minimum like hey we need to have this discussion about potentially another language in the district that could fit under dual language is there a minimum threshold where we would start to have that discussion yeah and to that I would say it's not so much a a number of students it's it's several factors first of all if we're looking at another language let's say Russian just to throw out a language um we would look at what are the trends of the students coming in are we seeing that that's a trend that's going to increase and and keep growing not that it's a one or two year influx let's say um also we would want to see that there's at least let's say 20 students at one particular grade level uh you know at those lower grade levels to begin thinking of uh actual dual language as opposed to just having a bilingual assistance for the students and I'm assuming that would be per school right 20 per like in a school in a school like you wouldn't want to like if I had wanted a homestead and three at Hunt Club in Fort Long Beach and again yeah I'm talking very minimum hopefully yeah we would look at where they clustered again if they're spread out thin and and there's you know not a lot of students at different buildings because that's a whole so there's a lot to consider besides just the actual numbers so last one I promise uh where are we at with DL Junior High when it comes to collaboration for staff and curriculum development we get a lot of those we get a lot of feedback when it comes to Junior High and where we're at a deal so uh this year we've had our eldl coordinator who works there and she's been working with the staff at the junior high as both a coach and a mentor and to also help them bridge and work with the curriculum that they have and bring those strategies to their classrooms we also work with our English learner tosa that assists with bringing the curriculum and helping it be developed at the junior high level as well as in the elementary also the Dual language English learner coordinator at the junior high has worked closely like with our dual language core team and is looking at the same set of of criteria to use as best practices that they're using at the elementary to be able to bridge those same practices to the junior high and working on those same criteria for walk-throughs and observations and and using how they can monitor the program at Junior High and I don't expect an answer to this question more of a comment but one thing that you know as we we talk about um inclusion uh I I hope and I'm sure we are but I hope that we're also checking in with with those teachers at the junior high to make sure that they're feeling like the culture is welcoming and they have they have staff and they're not isolated so and thank you for answering my questions appreciate it thank you I was just going to explain that tosa is teacher on special assignment we try not to just put acronyms out and not explain them I appreciate that yeah thank you that one I knew that's okay I didn't I didn't know exactly what I meant by new the essence okay we'll move on to 8.1 public comment so on behalf of the Board of Education I would like to thank the public for attending tonight's meeting we value the feedback we receive from our residents encourage everyone to take an active interest in their public school system residents interested in speaking to the Board of Education this evening are asked to have completed a comment card and presented it to the secretary to the board when the secretary calls your name I ask that you come to the microphone state your name for the public record and provide your feedback please note that comments are limited to five minutes per person and that no discussion of personnel matters or responses to questions are permitted the board does not participate in discussions during public comment follow up to your questions or concerns will be addressed by Administration through the contact information provided on the comment card thank you Lisa haranda I'm sure I set this name hi thank you and I'm Lisa Rhoda thank you very much for this opportunity to speak I'm this is in response to the presentation on January 23 2023 regarding the plans for social emotional learning for Community Unit School District 308 presented by Dr Paul and Dr Kincaid thank you for the time and effort put into this plan we especially appreciated how students voices were implemented it sounds like 308 is headed in a good direction it was asked how Eating Disorders was addressed in the nutrition curriculum at the high school level following that presentation the response given that the committee did not address eating disorders for this presentation but student services at the high schools will be contacted is what brings me here today to share why it is important and how it does impact the educational environment the honest answer was appreciated it shows where we are now and where we must be vigilant to achieve since some time had slaps between the presentation and today what were the findings when eating disorders was addressed with student services you may have found as evidence shows that contacting student services at the high school levels is a starting point but more must be done conversations and training must be had in all grade levels and among all staff they play a critical role in supporting the needs of individuals affected with eating disorders including the language we use in the information presented in order to truly address social emotional learning Health needs Health Nutrition and fitness we must work in collaboration with registered dietitians specializing in eating disorders to bring Eating Disorders awareness into the conversation at all levels and also have evidence-based body image curriculum to assure that we are helping kids this vicious disease is prevalent among all genders ability levels athletic abilities age socioeconomic status and rates over 28.8 people in America will experience an eating disorder which equals about one in nine individuals according to the National Alliance for eating disorders 70 percent of people living with eating disorders do not receive treatment despite the statistics hospitalizations for individuals living with eating disorders has more than doubled since the covid-19 pandemic and good treatment is expensive and often comes with a distance but it does not compare what can happen without treatment according to the National Alliance for eating disorders Eating Disorders has the second highest mortality rate second only to opiate use disorder every 52 minutes in the United States someone will lose their life due to an eating disorder Studies have shown that Eating Disorders are prevalent among adolescents and kids starting as young as five to six years old given the severity of the disease we must be careful in displaying stereotypical images of thin celebrities to portray what Eating Disorders look like in fact displaying these images for some challenges people who have eaten disorders or who are susceptible to having one to use that image as a Target and even strive for a Slimmer figure having students use BMI calculators having to enter their weight and track their cleric intake daily often produce inaccurate calculations aboard a growing adolescent actually needs and do not take into account activity levels and information that is indirectly entered additionally lessons focusing on calorie counting suggesting to lose one to two pounds a week if weight loss is desired labeling food good or bad only leads to rigid rules around food instead of teaching students to respect their bodies and to learn to have a healthy relationship around food exercise and to learn balance for life this is where it's critical for registered dietitians to be involved in how schools teach nutrition and weight management although the intent is good the current practices have significant data to prove that they are ineffective and even harmful so yes please do continue to speak with student services at the high school level to say that they are an incredible team incredible team is an understatement please continue the conversation at all grade levels and within the community please ensure that they are equipped with the tools and training needed although schools may not have the magic cure we can have important conversations with individuals trained in the field to ensure that we are providing the most accurate evidence-based information for all to be healthy no one should ever have to go through an eating disorder those who are affected by an eating disorder need to know that they are not alone and they deserve the right information and support if you or someone you know are experiencing easy disorders please reach out until someone helps you there is help and hope and you are worth it thank you thank you thank you Lindsey Robertson foreign my name is Lindsay Robertson thank you so much for having me here um I was previously a dedicated substitute for Fox Chase in 21 22 and then a TA for Fox Chase in 22-23 my daughter Charlie is seven and currently attends Churchill in the cross cap program and 22 the district made the decision to come behind LSP and ISP programs moving the children at Fox Chase to Churchill and vice versa the plan was to have K through third at Fox Chase and fourth through fifth at Churchill the plan was allegedly not discussed with board members it wasn't discussed with parents or teachers prior to a decision being made and was made based on data pre-covered the children like my daughter who had already formed friend groups with general education children were ripped from those friendships and forced to start over those children were forced to meet new friends with new teachers and staff and will then be forced to start all over again my daughter alone will move three times in her Elementary career if the plan stays it's hard enough for typical general education children to transition school to make friends let alone special education kids please think about how hard that transition is on a special education child please think about the message you're sending to that child it says the district doesn't care about my needs or my feelings of belonging and a sense of inclusion the district does not care how this affects me as a person and student per the idea location and placement are different special education children should be included in the general education or general enrollment numbers they should not have to move schools around the general population because they are part of the general population simply put this is discrimination now those same district officials have made the decision again allegedly without the board's input or the input with from parents staff or teachers in the schools affected to involuntarily reallocate teachers assistance many of whom have had to resign because it's not financially feasible or because they apply to work at certain schools based on the application descriptions which conveniently leave out the information about possibility of having to move this involuntary reallocation which is in breach of the Union contract section that states a voluntary transfers must be asked first before involuntary transfers are notified leaves the district short staffed especially the special special education department where there are usually multiple Tas per classroom there will now be less my daughter had a choking incident this year and had there not been the amount of support there was in her classroom it could have been fatal while certain District officials have been trying to make special education students more independent this is actually unhealthy and damaging what happens when District officials are focused on Fading supports denying more one-on-ones and not employing enough Tas this often leads to bad outcomes for students it pre-determines what is going to happen prior to the support being put in place the adults are too focused on Fading those supports rather than helping the child we are so focused on an arbitrary timeline created by officials instead of letting what the child needs dictate the program there's too much focus on Independence rather than on building a child's sense of autonomy these decisions say that our special education children are thought of last and aren't a priority to the district which is disheartening why is our motto together we Empower support and motivate our students to thrive along with their unique educational Journey when we're not practicing it I'm imploring the district to think about our special education kids there is currently a petition for change along with several cases where districts who tried similar plans lost one here in Chicago was ruled in favor of the parents by the seventh circuit because they knew the importance of adequately including our special education kids behind every child with a diagnosis who got what they needed despite the system working against them is a parent who spent countless hours researching advocating and finding other options when the system fails us we have to become the system currently the parents are that system and we shouldn't have to be thank you for allowing me to seek and thank you Jared for sincerely responding to my email I really appreciate the time you took to listen to a parent and former employee of the district it's what the community needs more of from our board members and District officials thank you thank you Jennifer Snyder thank you hello board members thank you for giving me the opportunity to formally address you my name is Jennifer and up until May 26th I was the lead lunch lady at Old Post I was removed from the school as a result of getting involved in school matters I'm not ashamed to tell you that I called 9-1-1 because of a student having a violent outburst my son's class had been dealing with these violent outbursts all year and I only had enough upon evacuating the teacher sent my son to me and his friends followed they showed up crying visibly upset and one of them had been injured these outbursts were always violent and the students were always a witness to this and often injured before the class could be evacuated I watched my son become a very angry resentful and fearful child we put him in therapy to help him cope he has been traumatized that may seem like an exaggeration but I promise it is not when that student comes up in conversation my son becomes angry and chokes back Tears by Nature my kid rarely cries that's what these outbursts have done to him prior to this incident we spoke to Mike mitchenson and Michael Swanson they insisted they were working on it they promised us that the well-being of their students was their top priority we asked that our sun be moved to another class that was ignored we asked that the student be monitored at all times that was ignored Mike mitchenson offered to build a relationship with our son as a way to help him cope would you like to know how many times Mike met up with our son to engage in creating that Bond zero in January the same student experiencing these challenges walked away from recess and the school didn't notice the student walked to Fruitful Yield where he asked someone to call his mom when his mom called the school to ask where her son was she was told that they were just about to call her read between those lines they had no idea where her child was they were frantically doing what they needed to do to cover their own butts and they were definitely not just about to call her nobody in my son's class thrived this year not the students struggling not their classmates and not their teacher who took time off in order to protect her own mental health their class finished the year behind the other classes as a result of losing so much instruction time Old Post completely failed them I've done my research I know that little can be done because the children experiencing these struggles are protected by idea until policies change schools across the U.S are stuck experiencing the same however other districts are trying the administration is being supportive and proactive the students at Old Post do not have that regardless of what you're being told districts have enacted policies that require the schools to document every evacuation and loss of instruction time for all students further the schools require the principal to communicate evacuations to the parents within 24 hours these are steps forward and the minimum that parents deserve I urge the board to come together to work on this issue and consider requiring the same documentation and communication I loved my job I prided myself on building strong bonds with the students I am devastated that I will be there next year as a group recruited care about them greatly I would have jumped to help any of them without hesitation I cannot fathom an administrator not doing the same students saw me as a safe space and someone that was there to protect them they did not see this in Mike mitchenson or Michael Swanson I was sternly told by them that I scared the students that fateful morning I asked my son if he felt scared when he saw the cops show up he said no I felt relieved that someone was finally going to protect us granted there were many other students at the school that may have felt differently but to the students that were already scared and had been scared so many times before they saw safety I hope that you begin to discuss doing more to help all students cope with these incidents as they are becoming common all students deserve to be safe in school we have to acknowledge that there is a problem and that we must make changes in order to do right by our students I want you to know that I loved my stop my job and those kids so much it was the best damn lunch lady and those kids would agree I've cried a lot but my kids safety comes first thank you for listening thank you so I have one last public comment from a student Sophie it's a car it's her name she states the state of the bathrooms and locker rooms is an issue for many students including myself and she's she says they're worried about it we are saying that the locker rooms are very messy in both the boys in the girls rooms a lot of students have previously said that the lockers and the stall doors can't fully close due to not being well maintained due to this many feel uncomfortable due to the lack of privacy people who change in the Coach's Locker Room complain that it is very dirty even even saying there is an unhealthy amount of bugs mainly ants in fact many of the bathrooms are unhygienic there is an issue because of how unhygienic the bathrooms and locker rooms are it can result in the spreading of diseases and viruses such as E coli influenza the common cold Etc there is also a problem with people smoking vaping in the bathrooms people going to the bathrooms to smoke and or vape is also an issue because it can release harmful Vapors which can make the bathrooms difficult to breathe in also if students seeing other students smoking and vaping they may start to vape as well unfortunately there isn't much we can do about the smoking vaping issue other than trying to discourage smoking and vaping and maybe implementing smoke alarms however there are many ways to take care of the other issues with the school bathrooms for example we can use some of the school's budget to fix the doors and lockers as well as implementing more things to improve the cleanliness of the bathrooms and locker rooms one thing we can do is to have exterminators come in to get rid of the bugs we could also have the bathrooms cleaned by janitors on a daily basis we should also try to fix or get new lockers and bathroom stalls thank you for your time Sophia ithacar okay we'll move on to 9.1 superintendent report well good evening board it's good to see you everyone uh tonight is my final board meeting as your superintendent and the the phrase is the phrase that uh the older we get time seems to move faster or um time goes by fast when you're having fun I have certainly found to be true I've had the opportunity to say our see you laters at the uh when I was honored at the retirement dinner on May 27th I appreciate all the kind words that everyone said about me it was something that was very appreciated appreciated and something I know all of our retirees will truly cherish so I've said I've sincerely enjoyed the past 11 years and 308 I will carry the memories and those friendships with me forever I look forward to meeting at my successor and I wish you all the very best and Mrs Hamilton that is my final report [Applause] I was here when you were you're hired on for the first time and here I am again and so and so thank you for all your dedication to um and greatly appreciated I've appreciate all the conversations and my learning thank you Jared I appreciate it it has been a wonderful Journey okay 9.2 student ambassador reports so I'll also echoing that thanks thank you Dr sparlin for everything you've done for us so in the last few weeks of school the ssac met a few times to disaggregate data we focused mostly on staff student interactions in student student interactions we all agreed that us as students additionally need to take accountability for our successes but also our failures and we recognize that there is a generational gap between us as students and teachers and other Administration we talked about respect and how we can go about receiving help and asking for that help one of the big things that we also talked about was implicit bias and where we can see that in our schools and I'd like to share with you just a few of the like major ones we found those were favoritism uh a lot of people witnessed that it happened but couldn't like name specific ones microaggressions genders treated differently not understanding cultural backgrounds and dis and teachers discouraging students from challenging class work and other courses so those were like some of the big pieces of data that we found in next school year we hope to look into them more yeah um and just building off of these staff student interaction piece the ssac also looked a lot into um why there's uh the relationship gaps as well between students and teachers a lot of that comes with confidence that students help with their teachers um and that can come from a variety of things whether that be a cultural how they're raised maybe just their own environmental factors or their own self-image but it's also a big problem because it talks a little bit about how students feel these relationships impact their academics several students know that there are things like tone the way teachers talk to you the effort they put in to talk to you the way they look at you or where you're seated in the classroom those are the things that determine if a teacher likes you and oftentimes those things can determine if you'll do well in a class or not because oftentimes those implicit bias factors come in and suddenly you're not being treated the same as another student this can impair one's learning in the classroom the f effort they put into the classroom or their learning in general a couple of things that we wanted to focus on next year action wise because we spent a lot of this school year doing a lot of research and pushing out surveys is doing one-on-one dialogues with teachers and students we've done our fair share of surveys and we want to get some more personal feedback as of now we want to use evaluation tools early in the year probably two to three weeks in the first semester on how students feel the course is going for them the ssac and several students outside of it noted that we do get course evaluations at the end of the year and by the time that happens no improvements can be made to your own learning and you can't verify if it's being implemented in the next year because you would have already passed out of the course by putting in or mandating evaluations throughout the year these improvements are seen by the students and change has to be made getting to know students learning cycles and having consistency about things like late policies homework these are the things that can build a structured environment the action for the fall that we want to take the most important one is building a survey for the teachers and this gets a little bit tricky but the big biggest reason we wanted to do this is because we've gotten a lot of insight from students about how they feel they have to build these relationships relationships in order to succeed they feel forced to try to get on the good side of the teacher in order to get an A in the class and this shouldn't be required you're receiving education and the effort you put in should be how well you engage in the classroom not getting on a teacher's good side but at the same time we've never gotten the teacher's perspective on how they feel about the students how their judgment about a student is impaired by what other teachers say about a student in particular and we wanted to look into that a couple of the questions we wanted to ask is how do you build a supportive environment for all of your students not why or if they do because they'll all say like of course we do and then we'll never know how they do it what prevents you from being vulnerable with students communication but from students to teachers and vice versa has been a really big aspect of this year how do how does your narrative impact your ability to have relationships with students who have a different narrative than you whether that be ethnic racial cultural religious or otherwise we definitely wanted to touch into these things in order to bridge some of those gaps that seem a little bit spread apart right now that was a lot of talking but I guess those are a couple of the things that we wanted to work on for next year action based with all the research that we've accumulated over the past year thank you very much just I love the evolution yeah beautiful but a Capstone yeah appreciate it so 9.3 board committee reports we have a policy report and a legislative report and those reports have been posted to board docs so what does our board do our board members have any questions for those two committees I mean I do have a policy question but I think I'll wait until we make the motion to talk okay um we'll move on then to 9.4 board member comments and um our vice president has going to speak on behalf of the board for comments for Dr sparlin so as Dr sparlin just mentioned this is his last meeting and I know we had a chance to express our gratitude at the retirement celebration but I thought it was apropos for us to appreciate you publicly and so uh Dr Sparling you really spent decades serving the students and staff with compassion your love for students and your commitment to staff is evident in every single interaction you have led SD 308 through times during times of uncertainty and it was your passion for people they gave so many the reassurance of what was possible your tireless efforts your long days and nights and your thoughtful gestures of appreciation let others know just how much you cared not just about their success but their well-being your support for students expanded beyond the classroom especially due to your love for sports you have serve SD 308 in a variety of roles and with many hats all with the purpose of empowering supporting motivating all students to thrive along their unique educational Journeys Dr sparlin thank you for your Decades of servant leadership and on behalf of the entire Community Union School District 308 we wish you well in your next chapter thank you [Applause] um thank you so much for that Mr Gaywood thank you anyone else with bored comments for tonight all right we'll move on to 10.1 the consent agenda are there any questions on the consent agenda not can I have a motion to approve the consent agenda please uh make a motion to prove all items under consent including 8.1 minutes from the May 8 2023 Board of Education meeting open and closed session minutes from the May 22nd 2023 special closed Board of Education meeting 8.2 Board of Education meeting open and closed session minutes from the May 22nd 2023 special closed Board of Education meeting 10.2 to acknowledge the foia requests received by the district and 10.3 to acknowledge the gifts and or donations received by the district second um real quick I do have a comment on the 10.3 since it's been motion has been seconded I just want to take a moment to say thank you to the businesses in the community that support our schools in the ways that are highlighted in 10.3 I hope people look at the list and I hope they support our partners who help our schools Mr Gatewood aye Ms Johnson aye Mr Plover aye motion passes 7-0 item 11.1 is information on financial statements does the board have any questions on what we've presented this evening item 11.2 is information from conversations held with the school Day committee Mrs dalquist will present what the committee came up with thank you uh School Day committee has done an incredible amount of work and it is not finished most of the work will be still continuing when we meet back in fact we felt it was so important that we already have a date on the books for September 12th but this uh highly committed group of people met frequently uh this year some of this work was actually had been going on three four years ago as we attempted to do some of these things for quite some time there has been interest uh in trying to find out a way to have our elementary school day end earlier especially in the winter months our students go home in the dark and our teachers report that the end of the day is very tiring for a lot of our students so that was something that we looked at we also tried to address the long lunch periods at Junior High those of you who have ever supervised a junior high lunchroom you know that a lot of additional downtime is sometimes not a great thing so that is something that we tried to look at and then we also tried to look at how a later start might affect high school students and looked at some of the brain research there I wish I could tell you that we were super successful um but it was a very difficult job for those of you who don't know most of our buses run three routes they do a high school route and a junior high and an elementary and because we use the same bus drivers to do that you have to have enough time to drop off students go back out into the community pick up kids come back to the next level of school those pieces and really takes about 40 to 50 minutes of time in between arrival and 40 minutes at dismissal it's a little bit faster at that time so we redid no exaggeration probably close to 50 different iterations of schedule changes if all levels could go at eight o'clock we would be done that is the prime time that every single level would like but as I said you've got to have a level before that and a level after that and there wasn't easily found a way to meet all of those pieces so as we went through and talked about all the different ways that we might do this we only came up with one acceptable piece which is a very very slight small schedule change for the proposal for next year so right now as it stands and we went back and forth we did staff surveys to everyone our Union leadership was really helpful in all of this is to leave High School alone with student and staff day being the same shorten the Junior High student Day by five minutes and that's to decrease all passing periods and you might say well faith we have more than five passing periods why wouldn't it be shorter than that we are going to then give those other three minutes back to student support time which our administrators are really excited about that and then that leaves that we have a five minute shorter day to then be able to shorten Elementary Day by five minutes but I want to point out to everyone that the teacher day would not be changing at all so our elementaries right now there's no one to supervise students right away so students come in but you can imagine in kindergarten in November when they come in with their snow suits and their mittens and they're all those things it takes a while to get instruction going so by having our teachers available earlier than that we'll actually be letting in students and be able to start instruction a few minutes earlier again a whole lot of work for not a whole lot of change but we would be then coming back to the board for this proposal in July but then continuing the work on what we need to do next year there's still a great interest in shortening Junior High lunch and figuring out how to do that and with the current contractual supervisions the administration did not see how to do that right away we do have a junior high that's going to be piloting some things so hopefully we'll have some more ideas on what to do with that and then we would still really love to be able to figure out a way to have Elementary start we looked at flipping different levels but could not come to consensus on that a lot of studies out there that show that high school should start later so obviously with that there wasn't a lot of give on uh there is a high school I think would be overjoyed it's starting at the 7 45 or 8 o'clock time then you would need to have Elementary start that much earlier or have Junior High start that much earlier and looking at whether we want elementary to start at 7 15 or 7 10 in the morning and what those pieces look like we also thought when we looked at whether we could change high school there are some things that if we started that work early in the fall that would impact Athletics would impact other of those things that by February and March some of that motion for the next school year for some of those after school competitions was already in motion so that's why we're starting earlier weren't a regular as a Committee Member but I was on the phone a lot with Mike de Armand and we wrote different schedules and looked at different ways to do that so he was on consult a lot I think it's incredibly important to have all the people that are that the changes affect in the room and make sure that everybody's represented there and I just want to put an exclamation point on what Mrs similton said there's so much research out there for both high school students and elementary students and I the sports thing is a whole nother animal in and of itself but I you know I do hope that we dig into that because it affects outcomes and achievement so um I look forward to the next iteration of what this looks like do we have supports in mind for junior high or or or some I know you said there's a pilot but is there just something to give them because 41 minutes for I don't even 41 minutes to eat lunch and I mean I've seen my my two boys when they were in junior high it does not take them 41 minutes to eat I don't care how much food I put in front of them I think I take them 41 minutes to eat that food so I'm just curious like is there something and that is one of the things that Shannon looters and I have been looking through as we look at contractual language in those pieces what are some of our supervisions and how we can support and have more staff there and we're optimistic that with what we're planning in the fall we'd be able to make more permanent changes well I appreciate that you know the one thing that I would say to that is um yeah and I think it was to your point right that it's it's idle time and so listen I'm happy that there's more staff there to help commiserate if you will for nothing else but the the real problem is it's idle time uh and so I don't I'm not saying I have a solution but I mean to me that's that's the piece here is you bring you're bringing in huge amount of students and right here you go right so I I appreciate the work I don't want to sound non-appreciative and we agree with you that it needs to be addressed um so this is me personally but I don't know if anybody else would agree but if if we were to have ideal brain research based start times um I would be interested to know what would the financial considerations be because it seems like we're going off of zero Financial considerations so if we were to run multiple um buses or not have a bus driver do three routes and only have them do two I would I mean I don't know how that control actually works um but I I would like to know um so we can determine if that's something that needs to bring pre-prioritized we did entertain and have our director of Transportation price out on what that would look like to try to have only two um each of our bus drivers I have approximately two routes the price was quite sizable but really why we rejected that is you would need that many more bus drivers to to you know to do some of those pieces and then they wouldn't have as much work to do because their hours would be even less than that I I I totally get that um so yeah I could see how feasibility and you know Financial restraints but uh yeah it's just something they would I wouldn't mind just knowing more about the numbers uh because we did look at that at um how costly or how um practical it would be to entertain an idea like that do do we know and any large unit district that's pulled this off and if if so do we do we know how they did it to combine bus routes by levels I believe to figure to figure out how to do yeah to figure out how to send our students to school at the optimal times so I don't know yeah that's the only way to do it sure but I mean you know I mean I mean so obviously districts that are K-8 or just high school it's a lot easier to do that but I believe and I don't know if it's still this year but I know in the past uh Naperville 203 did decide to spend the money to have less routes and have like Elementary and Junior High at the same time so that it would just have that many more pieces to do that that was quite a sizable amount back when I was in the know on how much that was costing there aren't a whole lot of K-12 districts that have done the flip of having Elementary you know start at those early pieces we weren't aware of anybody locally that had done that switch that's K-12 but then we've worked the schedules it's doable it's just how palatable is it for the change and what the impact of either junior high or High School athletics is to be that much later I tend to agree with Dominic I would at least like to see what it looks like I think it's a great Point Dominic and equally I would like us for to to help with the education process of all of this which is hey if what do those districts look like that have been able to do it to your point um you know this is how Illinois is the Unicorn right the K-8 the 9 through 12 and the unit district so what does that look like sure you wanted to see samples of the schedules that we made or just to see what other districts well I'm not going to speak Dominic's going to be able to articulate what he wants more but for me a Mayan to add to what he wants I just want to know which large unit districts have pulled this off because I think also understanding listen let's look at their their ebf rating right I mean if they're funded above 100 that tells us something right away if that's who's pulling it off I have a feeling it's a it's a large number because you probably have minimum hours right you know in the OTA and then they're not working those holidays there's it's going to be sizable but I still would I would I'd be interested okay okay but isn't there also an element of we used to run less routes and we did this before so I understand there's a bus driver shortage on many levels I understand it but you know do we see our contract that was ratified does that help are we going to see a trend in you know having more bus drivers I I think we need to be prepared to do what is best for student outcomes so that it might take us a year to do an exercise like this so having that information in our pocket and able to understand what those implications are you know is there are there grants we can go for are there I mean I know that seems to be what we always say is there a grant you know that requires time and you know and then with time to write those I I understand all that but I think um being able to be equipped with that information and understanding the different levers of the budget and how they can be changed is very helpful for the board to be able to make and help with those decisions no I go ahead I I didn't I didn't pose this but um I'm maybe making having you take a um you know a trip down memory lane was there there I'm pretty sure there was a time when one of the big savings was to kind of go to the scheduling with the transportation where it was is that something during your time or I I remember three tier rods the whole time I've been here three tour routes all the time right I just remember there was something with the consolidation but maybe it wasn't that okay so is the board asking for a presentation on or what are we asking for because I want her to be clear when she walks away what it is that we want from her well can I ask one other question in between I I assume you've looked at these already but have you looked at doing something in between like maybe flip high school and Junior High we've looked at you know starting with Junior High and then going Elementary and all the different orders all the different iterations we went through and went uh took surveys back to all staff all of those pieces I wouldn't mind just a just a report from the you know from the committee in our Wednesday updates or whatever um you know after their third meeting or second meeting or whatever just you know a financial implications yeah yeah something to answer your question you can help me out here Dr Sparrow and I think what he's referring to and I could be wrong but I think what you're referring to the point was I think there was a time where we had students who were being bussed who actually were within a certain amount and we we drew that back if I remember correctly right like we had students who were within that within that walking threshold and I think we we kind of Drew that back a bit if I remember correctly sometimes the reason for the transportation being provided within that 1.5 miles is due to certain construction and then when that construction goes away the transportation goes away as well right yeah so I think I think that might be what you're referring to because there were some reductions due to due to a long time ago yeah agreed yeah and the one what I read you're probably right though there was a time where we had we had more bus stops and we reduced the distance so we reduce the number of stops kids walk to the near another bus stop not a good one but you know what I mean exactly exercise it would be helpful to have some data-based research behind if if these were if this was the scenario if we were to flip High School in elementary here's the financial implication here's the data behind that being driven towards what is best for student outcomes and then the reality comes into play we can't afford that but I think it's incredibly important to know what that looks like yeah so as Faith said she had like 50 iterations of what they went through so I'm sure most of what you're asking for she already has so I'm sure she can put something together it wasn't data driven it wasn't data driven based on optimal up start times and end times for we did look into brain research around the high school piece especially of what time of day definitely Brain Research in your adolescent 10 o'clock would be a wonderful time to start school as far as brain health but if you go that late into the day that also affects students ability to work be part of Athletics you know do all of those but like 7 15 to 10 there's like a week ahead towards the other way but then Elementary too like you know as an elementary parent well no longer but kids being in school until almost four o'clock is there's not near as much extensive research on what the optimal time to end for elementary is but definitely that peak time eight o'clock in the morning again is a really great start time as far as brain health for the elementary age child and obviously there's a wide difference between a kindergartner and a fifth grader yes um on you know where that piece is but the committee did look into those pieces as well I think you hinted at this but the other piece that I probably would want to see in there is the re the the reality or the realistic ability to recruit the staff that would be needed in order to do that feasibility even yeah labor markets type this is a great committee though yeah I'd like to reiterate all the work that you and the committee did because a lot of time and effort went into like Faith said a lot of time and effort went into this very small change but I think it's weighing in some real really really great foundational work for when it comes next okay so just I want to check in on the timing of that report because the proposal right now is to come back you know to our July board meeting to see about the five-minute change are you wanting to see all of those pieces in a report no I think we can okay yeah I just wanted to clarify thank you you got a lot going on is the five so we had all of the administrators uh and the significant um piece of the all of the almost all the committee members are oea members uh any new membership and we debated about that because certainly our Elementary staff that really were asking for this are like five minutes really that wasn't you know the piece of that and we debated that quite a bit and decided that yes that our Elementary staff was asking for this so much and that we wanted to have less downtime at transition for junior high in between periods and can build some that we decided that it was worth it because we did talk about really we're going to go to a board report and to do all of these things for a five-minute change but that's where we landed so yeah so it was worth it for me yeah thank you all right item 11.3 is an update in regards to the Montgomery request for a partial tax abatement and Dr petsky's going to lead us through his presentation I brought a guest with me today so I've got Brittany thies from whitlaw Brittany there's a lot of property work so a lot of tax work works with me on the levy and a lot of financial projections so I appreciate all the time and effort that she puts in working in the business office and so now we have uh we have our village of Montgomery development abatement update as you recall I presented something back on April 11th I just wanted to follow up with the board on where we are in that process also if I could point out we have an audience member so Kate coxsworth she's an industrial broker with jll so she's been working very closely with the developers people interested in the uh the property as well as the village Montgomery and putting some of these land incentives together so nice to have you all right um just for a little bit of project background because it's been a little while so especially for Amy and Mary Jo so the village of Montgomery's economic development office has been working on a series of projects that include Parcels of currently undeveloped land I'll show you where that is in just a minute so taxing by bodies that have been invited to consider this abatement are the village of Montgomery the wabanzi Community College Kendall County and the school district and I'll Define I'll talk about real quickly what an abatement is here in a few minutes and basically there's companies and developers who are seeking incentives to choose specific sites and property for their developments so the property that we're talking about is if you take Route 30 out to Orchard Road and down by Galena road kind of where the old Caterpillar plant was there is some vacant land that you can see here and there's a proposal to put some facilities in there this is an industrial property development which we haven't seen for a while usually we're looking at residential so drive down Route 30 and you'll see a lot of houses and homes and residential so this is industrial property proposals so real quick just uh let you know again what a property tax abatement is property tax abatement is just a way to support and promote the expansion of existing businesses to a new location and the incentive is if they pay a property tax bill we give them a portion of that property tax bill so they can use it to invest in the property development so anything to add onto that one good I did a really terrible job explaining that one last time so uh property of a abatement what I did want to show is that current property we called the county office and got the parcel numbers that are looking at being developed so here you can see the property acreage you can see what their current assess values are and based on those eavs or the assessed values the district received tax receipts on each one of those Parcels it comes out to about 6443 thousand dollars per year is what we get in tax revenue so I'll come back to that number in just a minute as we look at the investment and the property development all right so since April 11th the village of Montgomery has provided an estimated property tax analysis so I'll share that with you tonight and just reiterate that that's an estimate what the village has at this time Kendall County has provided some comparable abatement agreements that were significantly shorter in time as well as lower percentages if you recall for this abatement they were asking for about a 10-year abatement and wanted to entertain the idea of a 75 percent abatement for five years and a 50 abatement for the last five years so um and one of the things I think is important to point out here too the agreements that we had they're not only significantly shorter and lower percentages but they were also a lower investment so this is a much higher investment uh 40 million dollars versus 400 million dollars so um also uh those agreements included some limitations on property tax challenges what they call or refer to as a clawback Kendall County Board voted to send their request to the committee to hold that was back in March about March 17th they took action at the board level gave it to the committee as a whole and there's been no further public action on that um the village of Montgomery did take action they voted to negotiate an incentive agreement for 10 years with a property tax abatement of 75 for the first five years and then a 50 abatement for the second five years so again if we collect a hundred dollars the first the first year they're asking for 75 dollars back to invest in the property in the business or the last five years they're asking for half of that back as well and I'll point out I do have a summary slide that Brittany and I were working on um that will highlight what what that abatement could look like um so that was the village of Montgomery also waubonsie Community College held a meeting on May 17th with uh with no further public comment they did have some questions they had some questions answered but there was no other discussion after that so this is a very tiny slide that basically shows this is the assessment uh data that the village of Montgomery provided for us and what it illustrates is across the top is every taxing body and I think one of the reason you're not seeing we're not seeing a lot of action from the other taxing bodies is their their taxing rates are so much lower than ours so for example um I can't even read it myself you know we've got the county at point six percent where the school district's at 6.3 percent oh hey thank you technology people look at there I can I can see so um much better so across the top you see all of the uh all of the taxing bodies so say the school district there 6.3 percent Oswego fire 0.6 the county point six the junior college 4.4 um Fox Valley Park District 0.4 so one of the reasons we're not seeing a lot of action is because people are waiting to see um the the person who values the most from the property taxes what are they going to do or what are they willing to do so scroll over to the left side again and going down horizontally then what we see are the two Big Blocks there's a phase one at the top and then below the line at the bottom lot two is kind of the northern site or a second phase so at the top there what you'll see is uh the land in question and what the eav is on that um and then you see the building so building a phase one building B phase two and the additional building and I think it's important to point out here that the assessments we see the value is only on the buildings it doesn't include the value of the property and other things like that so you can now see um the average value per square foot that data again was provided by the village of Montgomery using some comparable comparable development uh back from like 1994 1998 when they saw those happening so one of the questions the district has is is that a current assessment or are those values accurate but based on what we've got here you can see the average value per square foot you can then see the estimated eav and then the years that those developments would be taking place and then you can see based on our tax rate and the new eavs how much tax dollars the district would receive and the yellow line below that then is kind of showing so that uh the one 504 thousand dollars if we were to Abate 50 of that it would be 252 thousand dollars or if we do about 75 percent of that you can kind of see what those figures calculate at the bottom so um I think what I'll do is I'll flip to the summary page to kind of give you some highlights but this is kind of the data that that we use to make those calculations yeah go ahead on a couple of the assumptions that went into Brittany could you use the microphone please thank you Dr petsky hit on a couple of the assumptions that went into these calculations he took data from the village and took it to the next level just for comparisons there are a couple of assumptions that you need to be aware of not because we would suggest other assumptions you have to have some factors to use to work from you acknowledge the fact that the assessed value that's being used to calculate the abatement amount is based on averages in the property tax Arena when we're looking at the assessed value of a property it's supposed to be set at one third of the fair market value when Township assessors and the board of review property tax appeal board are setting the assessed value they're looking at the cost approach the income approach and the sales comparison approach so they would be adjusting for factors like age size location like you alluded to at the age through this process the district and the other taxing bodies are in a unique position to have more information about the cost of this particular project in a way that you wouldn't necessarily have access to that when you are at the property tax appeal or complaint stage I caution when looking at these numbers not because of any of the preparers of the spreadsheet but just because there have been a number of transitions over the last couple of months that mean we've had different pieces coming from different parties and I think we're still looking to narrow down what the district's estimates would be these calculations assume the district continues to have a flat tax rate so that's one of the factors when you're using a spreadsheet you have to have inputs to use we didn't artificially come up with something different and like Dr pesky mentioned the abatement is calculated on the building The Improv Improvement alone as opposed to the land value you'll see in this spreadsheet that I believe it was upper 3 million 3.1 million assessed value for the land that is different than what you saw in that prior spreadsheet where the taxes were calculated for this property we've also seen information that the land acquisition was in the 16 million dollar range so we're seeing it move in the right direction in these calculations but there's still a lot of movement that could happen and we just want to caution the board when looking at these numbers that is for purposes of you having some numbers in front of you but with those factors in mind so are there any additional I'm sorry I don't ask premature questions but any So based on this spreadsheet are you saying that the numbers based on these assumptions can change but are there are all of the assumptions listed within this spreadsheet and we just understand that the percentages or anything else or it may shift based on this but there's nothing missing on here for us to not consider the request from The Village at this point and from the developer is for a 10-year abatement by the first five years at 75 the second set of five years at 50 there's some discussion of whether though that 10 years is going to be a flat 10 years or whether it's going to be staggered that is the certain component of what the request is and for the board Dr Patsy will get into it but whether you're prepared to State a position tonight whether you need more information the spreadsheet is one set of calculations of what that could mean for the district so kind of like Britney said it depends on the appraisal are they using the cost method are they using the income method the sales method how are they looking at that and that would change some of the numbers here so this is based on the uh this is based on the cost um method Brittany and I worked a long time to take all that spreadsheet data and kind of come up with an easy potential summary what this could look like so this is probably the most important slide here that I want you to kind of see So currently the district's annual tax receipts as I said earlier was six thousand four hundred forty four dollars in undeveloped land so over a 10-year period we would be looking at getting sixty four thousand dollars well the proposed tax receipts based on the village Montgomery estimates that they provided over 10 years would increase that to 20 million dollars or an average of about two million dollars a year so at a proposed 10-year abatement five years at 75 percent in five years at 50 percent the district would collect that 20 million we would give back 12 million that would be the abatement to the developer and the district would realize 7.9 million dollars in improved Revenue to the district over 10 years so the note at the bottom there just those calculations uh presume a maximum of 10 years of abatement and not separate 10-year timelines for each one of those phases any questions on that one staggered over 10 years versus being they're doing like a 2024 development and then a 2029 so it would be a 10-year developer but this is a 10 10 years from 2024 and not in that 2029 and adding extra years onto the abatement somebody don't know what they're asking for um well right now what they're asking for is they're asking for us to consider a 10-year abatement as well at oh go find out okay hi there hi hello hello I'm Kate nice to meet you guys um a couple things to talk about so this is um I deal with Industrial in the entire Chicago Market I would not consider Montgomery Illinois um what we call kind of a central node or something that people are jumping at to go to develop um for that reason we are focused mostly on what's called a bill to suit so these are sites that we know the maximum far meaning the maximum building size that we can build on a 200 Acre Site we are going to the market to try to attract the best companies to come relocate to Montgomery Illinois and why I think that's important is that everyone knows that the economy is kind of dipping a little bit um it's critical in our opinion to be able to have some incentives in place to attract the best companies to relocate here and we're competing with a lot of other sites across both the state of Illinois and also Indiana and Wisconsin that might have some better tax incentives than we have here in Illinois that's our primary focus and I just want everybody the other part is that the abatement doesn't go to the developer we have nothing to do with it this is going to be passed directly onto the tenant so we're we're aligned in trying to get the goal of getting you know a Fortune 100 a fortune 200 to get some sort of replacement for a caterpillar that went away that's what we're trying to do here the other piece of it is that we the southern Hundred Acres we are pretty confident we know who that's going to be and then there's a couple other buildings that we're still talking through right now some of them could have a higher dollar amount as far as the build goal goes one of the which is a cold storage facility which is a much higher dollar per square foot development transaction so that's something that's going to impact you guys as well so this is not like we're not building strip malls basically right like we're looking for like warehouses and so forth where where have you got it kind of the benefit right and the benefit is that doesn't add a lot of load to the school district it doesn't add a lot of seats to the classroom it adds a huge diversification of your tax basis right these are not residential homes this is you know Industrial yeah and the reason I ask is you know I'd be very leery to say okay I'm going to put a strip mall here and give I don't know a pizza place now an upper Edge on pizza places that's just an example nothing against pizza places um you know a disadvantage so that would be my problem with this but if you're telling me this is distribution warehouse type thing then that that puts it different look on things for me and the build a suit aspect I think is important too there's you know two main kind of abatement or incentive packages is more beneficial to the developer and you can do abatement which is more beneficial to the actual company that you guys are going to have in your in your community part of your activities and kind of build you know we've talked to the Community College a lot about some sort of program to help students and and interact with the community more than just a traditional kind of speculative industrial building where you we don't know who's going to go in there we have we're asking for a little bit of time so that we can go out and find the best for you guys and for us um so that's why we kind of wanted that phased approach as well because if we kick it off you know we're planning to start moving dirt this summer so this is not 10 years in the future this is like we want it we're ready to go and we would like we would like to do that well I don't I don't know if um latonya's question was answered the staggered on the on the abatement part had some talks with the village of Montgomery and as they mentioned they are the ones that have really they've drafted an ordinance and and we're reviewing it with their attorneys um the southern Hundred Acres had a three a three very distinct phase build and so we had asked originally that that abatement starts by phase so that they can capture the most of the 10 years because if they build a 500 000 square foot building in July that's done by 2024 and they don't start their second phase until 2027.

thank you everyone uh we're going to um uh take as it's on the agenda we're going to begin I'm going to turn it over to um Mr Kylie to introduce our first uh presentation thank you Mrs Amaral so we're pleased tonight to have Mrs Enid Silva president of the DHS alumni association with us who is going to report on the um on the scholarship essay winners [Laughter] thank you very much for having me this evening I wear the hat of Dartmouth High School alumni association tomorrow will be another hat just as important I've come here this evening because I have been with the Alumni Association since I graduated from Dartmouth High School 65 years ago and in all those 65 years I think that Dartmouth High School has always been an inspiration for all of us that come back and work through our alumni association to make sure that we can make a better future for some of our graduates this year we were able to give out twenty one thousand dollars to the class of 2023 and wish we had more and wish that we could follow them all through their college Years because some of the essays were so so heart moving this year a member of our group uh graduated in 1993 Tara Thomas she is a music teacher in middle school she came to one of her first meetings and said do we ever ask the kids if they could tell us about their favorite teacher or teacher that inspired them and we all went no we've never thought to do that of all the years I've been doing this I guess we thought every teacher was respected every teacher was loved there's no need the times have changed I think this happened this year because of the times we didn't plan for it we didn't expect it but here it came so we chained we voted and we changed our application so that it would include an essay about a teacher that you admired that inspired you that liked you that you will never forget application started coming in and some of the applications were from the old school that didn't have the question so not all of them were able to give us their favorite teacher but we got at least 12 that did and they celebrated their teachers in essays that were very very personal and deep for some of them and we're all listening to national news talking about the children in America how they have reacted to covid and as adults we know how we have acted with covet and we have probably pride ourselves in thinking that we did pretty well we got survivors The Children of America have suffered more because these were their growing years these are the years they were trying to understand themselves and then covet said you can't go there you can't go to friends you can't go anywhere stay home stay out of our way and be invisible teenagers Are Not Invisible especially American teenagers they have opinions and they have feelings and when they're deprived of spitting that out and saying it in a crowded room hostility probably comes through so I guess this was the year to do it and because they were so um so open to tell us their background I have stack about that thick of essays so I tried to make sure that I got only took about a paragraph of everyone's essay so I could read them to you reading them to you out of context probably is a disservice to each and every one of them but here's some of them there are many DPS teachers who influenced me I used DPS because I was typing and I have a broken arm who influenced me but I would have to say that my fifth grade teacher Miss Liz vosse was one of the ones who influenced me the most she gave me self-confidence to apply myself and in the best grades possible she's always inspired me because of how dedicated she was to her students in her classroom she wanted her students to have all the tools necessary so she held fundraises to get equipment so that she could make her room an active classroom at the same time she made School fun and I remember how much I looked forward to going to school to be with her she had a real impact on me wanting to not only be a good student but to remember to be kind to others along the way as she demonstrated firsthand every day the teacher who has been most influential in my years at DHS is Mrs Melissa lamba she was my Spanish teacher for sophomore and Junior years she was very impactful to me throughout high school because she's caring always gave me extra understanding during difficult moments that high schools present and most importantly she always treated me with respect Mrs lomba is a teacher who is patient and easily relates to her students she is a teacher I know I can trust and has continued her support of me this year even though I am no longer one of her students I know I will always remember her kindness and her guidance the DPS teacher who has influenced me the most has been my seventh grade science teacher Rebecca Keenan Mrs Keenan was unlike any teacher from the staff Not only was she my teacher but she became a leader and a parent figure in my life if I was struggling at all or if I just needed a good laugh I could always go to Mrs Keenan I helped her with anything she needed and she did the same for me I was inspired by her kindness and spirit whenever I make a decision regarding school or students I always ask myself what would Mrs Keenan say I thank her for her dedication to her students and her craft I think teachers would like to be happy to know they have a craft and I'm happy to say that even after five years we still keep in touch excuse me microphone's not making me drives when you get old everything's dry this one's a little special I'm a Dartmouth student in an external student placement I was able to meet all of dartmouth's requirements passing MCAS and various courses to earn my Dartmouth diploma this June my sixth grade teacher Miss Lisa K Katz turgeon inspired me and drove me to want to educate students with respect patience and compassion that she showed me every each and every day being a student with global learning disabilities I required my work to be scaffold and taught in a way that I could connect Mrs turgeon did this remarkably well in a manner that allowed me not only to learn but not to feel embarrassed because I needed her help she was that special education teacher that offered helped to all students opened her room for anyone who needed another explanation or a review of the material taught she truly cared and each one of us saw and felt this it's been six years since I sat in her class but I still vividly remember the way she gave me instructions instilled confidence and advocated for our needs she will forever hold a special place in my heart as a fond memory of being a diamond student I have been admitted to several colleges to study special education and I now aspire to be that teacher whose students want to walk through the door and is there for them to teach them every day and guide them to Greatness when I moved in with my dad he immediately enrolled me in Dartmouth High School the first person I met was my social worker Mrs Catherine Thomas who noticed I was panicking and gave me a stress ball as she told me to find each color of the rainbow all around the room looking back I now realize she was just doing her job but everyone in Dartmouth High School has been so helpful from being there for me to hearing my struggles and helping me achieve educationally I am skipping some of it and I hate it this child came from Fall River didn't do well there but got to Dartmouth middle school and started to have a better understanding of things it took some time for me to catch up with the other kids in my class but now I have a 3.6 GPA and I'm currently going to graduate from Bristol Community College in June this shows that because of the Dartmouth community and because of how much the teachers friends and family care about me I was able to thrive going to Bryant University in the fall when coming to Dartmouth High School I was nervous I didn't know what I wanted to do as I walked through the doors to my classroom I saw Mr Robert parody TV media teacher he helped to show me the ropes as aspects of media in all aspects of media including field trips showcasing what Dartmouth had to offer a welcoming classroom Friends TV media clubs and opportunities to learn and grow Mr peroti has made me the thriving young individual that I am today and from that four years ago when that little girl came walking through his doors he knew I was going to be something special still seem to all be awake I think I'll continue the DPS teacher that influence influenced me the most was Mr Eric Bosworth he was my computer science teacher at DHS we still continue to be friends even though he is no longer my teacher I attend an after-school group that he organized I am inspired by him because he makes me feel normal he listens to me as a person he believes in me as a student and he pushes me to do the things out of my comfort zone he asked me to present coding to Rising 8th graders in DM Dartmouth middle school and at Dartmouth High School open house to the families who attended Mr Bosworth is a true inspiration especially to the students that feel less than and are always left out due to their popularity status at school I've been a dance student for 14 years I always found myself unable to imagine a world where I would be able to pursue my dance and academic goals until I met Dr Peter bangs in my senior year of AP biology staying after school with Mr bangs and learning of his incredible academic history and then hearing him tell me that it does not have to be one or the other but it can be both dreams really helped me realize that I can pursue dance now and an academic experience in the future the DPS teacher who has been a great influence in my life is John Mr John Bro Not only was he my sophomore year English teacher he was also my academic support advisor and my coach for unified track and basketball he always believed in me and what great things I could accomplish he believed that I was capable of doing more and pushed me to do the to be the best of my ability and make me accountable during my IEP meetings he always showed compassion for myself and my family understanding my personal life and showing perspectives and showed interest in my welfare even though he is an adult figure in my life he knows how to be cool with us young kids he has definitely been a positive Mentor in my life I am truly grateful for having Mr bro as part of my academic team and I hope I can make him proud as I attend college and four years from now walk across the stage to accept my degree the teacher who inspired me the most during my time at DHS has been Mr Matthew Tweedy I took his Marine Science class in my junior year and quickly realized that we both share the same love and passion for the ocean learning about coral reefs the Marine ecosystem and how waves our farm created a good learning environment for me I spent most of my time learning about things I had yeah I think I lost my place I spent my time learning about things I most was most passionate about I felt a sense of Engagement and motivation that I never felt in any other class before growing up my life has resolved around the ocean Mr Tweedy helped me grow as a person while also expanding my knowledge of the sea he made me want to come to class every day and saw my value and worth He is someone who understands my hobbies and interests someone who actually values my skills and passions he made an effort to show he cared he would always ask things like how's the boat running pretty fun swiftly this weekend huh the ocean keeps me balanced and will allow me to do my best work thank you Mr Tweedy for always inspiring me to be myself and Chase what I love I have been fortunate to have several teachers who have impacted and shaped shake me into the person I am today the teacher who I look back on is having the business best yeah biggest impact on me did so at a young age so young that I didn't notice him several years later that was my first grade teacher Miss list nimi as a first-born grandchild I spent a great deal of my time with my great-grandparents my great-grandmother who I call Gigi was a retired Dartmouth Elementary School teacher Gail Frost I think she deserves to be said who cared for me prior to starting school my parents worked on by Gigi and papa Library visits museums boat rides and Adventures Mike Gigi was diagnosed with cancer and passed away while I was in first grade with Mrs nimi my parents and Grandparents were devastated over Gigi's passing and I don't and I don't know that I completely understood but I knew tears and crying and new hugs were comforting but once the out-of-town relatives left we were talking about going back to school Mrs Silva has forgot the page that ends this but this family is very near to me too Mrs nimi welcomed her with a gigantic hug as she walked into her first grade classroom and told her she was part of the meaning family which is what she calls her classroom it's a child that was inspired by the welcoming uh attitude of her first grade class character all the way through High School enough so she's often to her college Years with the love of her family her Gigi and everyone at Dartmouth High School alumni association as we sat in not knowing who that child was we always now talking about as adults many years out of school who is the favorite teacher and we all found a favorite teacher and some of us had a problem because we had too many favorite teachers and I'm so proud of Dartmouth the town the school committee for keeping up the image that we love here in our community these children were not all a plus students not were they all going to be left in the dust but somehow through the years at Dartmouth Public Schools they were able to come to the top of the pile I tell my grandchildren that all of our children are an apple like an apple tree and the best apples are always at the top the apples would fall to the ground anybody can pick them up but the apples they are at the top of that tree and you should be one of those are the ones that are hardest to pick because they have high standards and morals and they wish to be spoken to in a specific way um you were not able to be with us on Sunday when we did our ceremonies the fifth year because of covid I think we're going to do it this way a lot more because now we get we're getting the feel of how much the children enjoy being talked to one-on-one some of you were with us on Sunday and I hope you had a good time we send out a newsletter once a year so over two thousand three thousand people that graduated from Dartmouth High School which is just a small number and uh we asked them if you'd like to join us for ten dollars for life and they join and they send us money for scholarship and because we have been trusted by the alumni of Dartmouth High School there are graduates who have sent us large donations for scholarship that's all we do although we did buy a brand new Podium for this High School when it opened I guess we call it the scholarship podium as a gift to the new High School we do not give out loans as we started to do in the 50s because then we figured out we figured out they gave out a hundred dollars as a loan no one paid it back and then they were angry so we decided maybe we should do scholarships we're just starting it I guess at Public School level and so we started giving out scholarships instead our first scholarships were fifty dollars then a hundred then three then five and now we give out scholarships with a larger number to a larger number of children because of our donations from alumni members and uh I just wanted to touch base with you guys I know it's not easy for school uh school committee people to get into the classroom during the day as it wasn't easy for a person on the select board to get to the police department and the highway department and all other departments to make sure they were doing their job but I just wanted you to know your teachers are respected and they respected their students and they're doing a good job and we need to support them everyone wants to make the government a business if business brand like government businesses would be out of business a government is a service to the community having a black line at the bottom and not a red line is important but it's not it's not everything is cracked up to be we got to make sure that the humans are taken care of and the humans in your case are children I have one young lady who at the ceremony I said if you want to come please come you can read your essay I think several said yes but this one young lady is a bright and shining star in our community and she's going to read her full essay to heal liar [Applause] hello school committee here's my essay that I submitted for the Dartmouth High School alumni association scholarship as a student that immensely struggled emotionally during the first semester of her freshman year I felt nothing but joy when the pandemic first hit two weeks off school is there anything better than that I first remarked on Friday March 13th of 2020 but it soon hit me that this pandemic would soon take its course and alter the high school experience for students Nationwide in the class of 2023.

start streaming start recording and we're good to go all right thank you Mrs Jeffy it's a round of applause [Applause] to fix that little technical difficulty I don't think the other two people will stand up we'll see if we can get them to do it but I also want to thank Mrs negri and Mrs hopcroft who are here to stand up please so it's these these three women that have put together this event I'm just here to read off the cue cards uh so they do all the hard work to be honest um the next slide will outline our program for the evening but before we do that I'm going to explain the process of how we're going to recognize our students this evening so first thing that will happen after we get through the agenda is that I will put up a slide with the title you'll see the title of the award being given out if someone is presenting the award let's say someone from the Girl Scouts or the Women's Club Society I can't remember which one it was uh they already talked to me earlier uh you're going to come up right to this table if you're presenting to this table over here on my left students when you hear your name you're going to come up this left side you're going to walk across center stage lights on you I'll shake your hand you'll head down this set of stairs and over the table where you will receive your award and once you're off the stage for this and getting your award I will pull up the next one it's pretty straightforward no pressure on the first person we'll see how well you do I am going to read a lot of names tonight I have done my best to get the pronunciations as close as possible I appreciate that several students said that's okay it's as close as you can get I am going to try to get as close as I possibly can it is your name and it is important so I apologize ahead of time if I'm a little off but we'll get better Bella and Chaz are looking at me waiting to see how I knew their last name I do appreciate also uh this is the second year we've done this where we're actually combining several different Awards ceremonies instead of having parents come out night after night we decided to combine everything all in one we're glad to have our Juniors our undergraduates here as well so welcome to the Juniors that are getting Awards tonight we'll also share some athletic uh Awards as well and then we'll move on to the seniors so first she's really nervous so give her a chance we're gonna have the Pledge of Allegiance led by Russia [Applause] the director attention the flag over here well Trisha comes up and does the Pledge I pledge allegiance to the flag s [Applause] producer [Applause] a little bit of a public speaking hint for anybody that ever has to get it before the large crowd with a pledge all you have to really do is say I pledge allegiance and then step so I gave that tip to Trisha she did a great job she remembered it it's amazing when you say something so many times over however many years you start overthinking it in your head so what we're going to start with is the undergraduate Awards we're Boston Juniors and some other undergraduates up then we'll move on to the athletic awards then the senior Awards and scholarships followed by the senior Department Scholars and then finally I will call up our salutatorian and valedictorian this number I'm about to tell you is not a lie I'm serious we only have 98 more slides to go so if we follow the directions I gave earlier that's why I was a bit you know OCD about making sure people come up and we got a lot of slides to go but a lot of great names a lot of kept it together girls and boys uh basketball we're giving the sportsmanship award by the officials Association so that tells a lot about the way they conducted themselves and none of that would be possible without the leadership of Natalie Lee foreign basketball [Applause] I first want to thank our admin and the board of ed for the tremendous support the boys basketball program gets we were very lucky this year to have a great group of seniors [Music] a very tight-knit group of guys and one of the most enjoyable species that we that I've had as coach uh we won 17 games we won a state tournament game this year we also won a game last year with these guys as Juniors and they've really helped grow in the program and continue to take the program to new heights um I just want to give him a shout out we have Justin Blackman who's going to continue playing basketball Community College we have DJ Burrell Aidan pachado 80 separagic Elijah Vaz and Lou Vega who will have a chance to play at Felicia College next year um I also want to shout out for tremendous managers that we had senior managers uh Jason Urena and Natasha Roche and our team MVP is Louis Vega [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] thank you coach up next to talk about the restaurant [Applause] [Music] congratulations teams uh first of all our team went 21-4 this year we equal the record with the most wins ever I'll be worth 2023 North Jersey dual teams champions uh 2023 Passaic County Champions first time in 50 years which [Applause] which team was led with Ronnie Devin Andrew Salman and of course Joe England all right Joe Abel is our MVP this year if you ever got a chance to actually come down to the matches you would see this bull stepping out of mat and most of the guys who did not survive more than 10 seconds I think he's got about 15 or 20 pins under 10 seconds which is almost impossible right uh Joe it was probably one of the best 21st century Clifton Mustang got ever Investments with uh if he wasn't for covet he would probably break more forehand's record with the most wins he was fourth in two thousand twenty one fifth 2022 third 2023 with a record of 41-1 the only loss he got was in quarterfinals which he Avenged later on in the tournament Joe also three times first demo cam four times First Team all League first team North Jersey Captain for two years and had over 100 wins he's career record was 125 and 18 losses I mean one of the greatest questions and one more thing that sadly I got to tell to the seniors of one of our assistance is retiring Freddie hamsey so Freddie you're going to be greatly missed thank you [Applause] yeah so unfortunately chance he couldn't be here he does when when he consistently does and works he's got another job and uh that's where he is and he's the only retiring as a wrestling coach thankfully he's still for the teenage and site managed to do all of that so you know they'll be around all right coach and ice hockey [Applause] like to thank our board event for all their support um yeah our seniors this year LED our team to a 12 10-2 record uh we played a silver cup championship game for the league we earned a state bid for the first time in maybe eight years a lot of this was due to the leadership of our senior group uh our senior MVP ended up the first team all-county first team Aldi uh he's a player but I got to watch from freshman year to senior Year my first year was his freshman year so it's been an absolute pleasure watching this athlete grow not only as a hockey player but also as a as a person our senior MVP is James strong [Applause] thank you congratulations [Music] all right thank you George all right coach boys winter track no coach West I'm sorry [Applause] I have um that's all good first off I want to thank uh all of the the coaches for winch's track boys and girls together so we have a coach post with rose coach give her a nice hand goes down here against coach uh coach chassis YouTube who's new to uh coaching for us his pole vault coach and I remiss if I did not mention the uh the architecture the architect I should say of the track program synonymous with track and Collective going up on 50 years of coaching one of the most successful coaches [Applause] [Music] athletes even fewer seniors um our indoor track athlete senior athlete of the year first team wall County and indoor first team Long County and cross country and state champion ready to do that [Applause] for boys also First Team all County I asked this is another individual when he was back in middle school to do a track and field and uh it is proven to be his greatest achievement so far Christian Gray [Applause] oh yeah thank you coach West [Applause] all right last but certainly not least [Applause] thank you good afternoon well both sides of the swim team gave it to her all this year we are losing 11 great swimmers this year and I want to wish them the best in their future endeavors inside and outside the pool I also want to recognize all the athletes who push through two of their four years being an athlete during a pandemic and getting back to a normal way of playing sports the challenges that you have overcome do not go unnoticed I have the pleasure of speaking about two great student athletes these swimmers are a true example of what hard work and dedication mean to the sport of swimming it has been a pleasure coaching these two athletes over the past four years having a front row seat to watching them grow as an athlete and as a person has been a joy it is my pleasure to introduce our 2023 swimming MVPs francoasti and Abigail shakey congratulations guys corporations congratulations [Music] all right I'm going to take a dinner break I do have a set of tables so please don't all go rushing up at once uh tables one two and three tables 16 15 and five [Music] oh my God [Music] um welcome everyone [Applause] [Music] table 17 and 14.

does that cut is it the same 10-year clock because they haven't actually built that building so that's why we asked for a little bit of leeway there um but I believe that how the village kind of took this they gave us until 2026 to start so anything from now until 2026 we get a little flexibility the time clock the time starts when the building is complete but outside of 2026 because if you guys are counting on revenue and you're asking us to help you get more Revenue we want to make sure that we do that now instead of 10 years from now so who makes the final decision on the on the abatement agreement is is that basically one by the village is it run by whoever's moving into the location or so you've got you've got two different proposals out here of abatement agreements yes yes I would assume that overall there ends up just being one abatement agreement that everybody abides by I so you can do it two ways I think Kendall County typically from my experience wants to do one ordinance that is similar because from Simply from an administrative perspective it's a lot to try to do different levels at different taxing bodies I'm sure you guys have a lot of taxing bodies so um that's the first piece and the second piece is we do have the ability and that is totally within jurisdiction I'll let you answer that but that you can have different agreements with different taxing budgets no thanks so in my estimation all abatement regardless of when they start will be done by 2036.

2023-06-06 Bristol County, MA YouTube / DHSTVmedia transcript source: youtube Dartmouth School Committee Meeting, June 5, 2023 · passage 2
as a student trying to figure herself out the isolation of quarantine offered me nothing but time to think to think and think and then think endlessly some more I would ask myself the questions every day who do I want to become who do I want to be known as and what do I want to stand for day by day and month by month the answer is slowly pieced together I finally realized that I wanted to utilize my education and to give back to give back to the community that shaped my childhood my aspirations and who I am inside Dartmouth High School has given me the support mentorship and guidance and opportunities to become a successful and ambitious student I cannot think of a more valuable place I could have received my secondary education I walked in here as a student with little to no direction and numerous emotional struggles on June 4th of 2023 I will walk out or now have walked out with the lessons I've learned from my friends peers teachers and administrators as well as the diverse and well-rounded education I spent the last four years obtaining but most importantly the ability and confidence to venture out into the real world and make a difference in my community and communities Beyond DHS gave me the ability to meet a teacher who has influenced my want to give back to the community my life would not be the same had I not met Mrs Chamberlain I still remember the day I met Miss Chamberlain I went up to her to strike a conversation because she was my brother's teacher one random morning we immediately clicked and even though I was a freshman and she wasn't one of my teachers we would often find each other having a conversation once I got my schedule back for my junior year and I read the name Mrs Chamberlain Spanish for honors a joy searched over me as I had been wanting to take a class of hers for two years now I always admired her drive to give back to her community she began a free program at Quinn Elementary School to teach students in grades one through three the basics of the Spanish language when she was asking for volunteers for the program I was the first to jump at the opportunity I began to see the joy within children was simply unmatched by their adult counterparts a joy so infectious that it spread to even teachers of the program each day Mrs Chamberlain's love and gratitude towards her community inspired me to want to give back to I wanted to start giving back to my community Through volunteering after becoming the president of the Dartmouth High School robotics team my teammates and I organized a free and accessible robotic summer class for students in grades five through eight we've traveled to local schools in the Dartmouth public school system and taught engineering lessons to students while also recruiting four hour summer program we wanted to ensure that every single student in the area regardless of income level or gender had access to resources so that they can become a successful and young engineer in two summers we've been able to reach and teach a total of 720 students in the Dartmouth Public School System a number we are immensely proud of this project insulated my love for working with children after getting to teach young students in this area I began to understand how children are the most genuine people on this planet they do not like to sugarcoat anything and truly could not be more honest seeing children be deprived of their natural Joy is something I simply cannot witness I now aspire to be a pediatric surgeon so I can rekindle the spark and fire once extinguished in ill children through the Dartmouth High School alumni association scholarship I can be one step closer to my dreams of re-sparking this fire so that's my essay but while I'm up here I would like to take this time to say thank you so much to the Dartmouth High School alumni association and especially president Enid and the other officers especially you guys know how the cost of college is rising every year and the fact that you guys are really able to give back um and really ease this financial burden for so many of students in this area truly just means so much to me in this community so thank you all so much for that thank you that's wonderful I don't know if my colleagues have any any comments or Mr news I was I was here on the Sunday for the afternoon and the teachers had correct me from the teachers had no idea why they were here type of deal so it was a total shock to them when you know the teachers were here and the students and and the they were blown away so it was really a nice a nice time we had the big numbers out for him and everything that was perfect that's fantastic Shea was here and he part took of it also so it was nice wonderful we don't tell the children let's not tell the teachers nice so they said can you tell me who it is so I can give them a graduation card make it female we're not telling so when they came and they saw the student it was a revelation to them sure because sometimes they expect it to be that particular student because they've kept in touch and other times they were a surprise yeah that's wonderful anyone else have any that's just fantastic fantastic and I hope all the alums stay in touch very important yeah so thank you for your work that's all we do we keep our record straight had to get uh information now because everything is so HIPAA involved but we try to keep all the class records so if they want to have a reunion they come to us they get more updated information than they had the last day they met in high school graduation great thank you so much Enid for bringing this to us it was so nice to hear that yeah and I don't know if if Dr Jenkins has any comments your name in the newsletter yeah it was great thank you Enid Dr Jenkins thanks you as well thank you yeah no this is fantastic and thank you for reading your essay it was wonderful to hear and appreciate it and thank you for this I I know my uh my daughter's invitation she was a 2020 grad we received in the mail recently so I just happen to see it on the envelope so excellent thank you so um now we're going to move on I think we have uh now we'll hear our public comments so we've allotted 10 minutes for public comment and so please please feel free to come up to the podium and just State your uh your name and and be mindful of the the 10 minutes got it total well I think I think we're good okay so my name is Maureen Sullivan Boyle I'm a teacher in the district and a parent and a resident I'm a long time listener first time caller kind of thing I've been sitting in the crowd for almost every meeting for the last 18 months I'm a building DEA representative from the Middle School I've sat through several rounds of negotiations in my time here but I wanted to thank Mr Kiley uh for working with the DEA and for educating the select board and the finance committee for a very important one-line item in the budget I want to thank the school committee for listening to our many members speak about what was being discussed at the negotiating table and responding with movement on that on those on those issues when you could um I wanted to I know she's not here but I want to thank Jasmine Jasmine Olene our new our negotiations chair who facilitated our negotiations process for the first time and she did a fabulous job I want to thank Renee and Jody our co-presidents for their unwavering support when it comes to fighting for the members and trying to get what is rightfully deserved by all members of our units it's a thankless job many many hours it's many uh not nice conversations uh but they don't hear it enough so I just want to say thank you so as you are aware after uh working for without a contract uh this school year it seems like we've ratified the next three-year contract but I want to be clear it's not really a win for anyone movement was made yes on both sides but due to inflation rates and the six percent range and a hefty increase in health insurance this was not a win it was barely it's not even a break even we've attended many school committee meetings select board meetings finance committee meetings met with our State Rep our state senator and even representatives from Blue Cross Blue Shield over the past 18 months we've brought our children with us or left them at home and have missed special time we've we've juggled our health as well as the health of loved ones to get to these meetings I'm the one that sits in the audience with my sign that says make Dartmouth competitive again and I always wondered what you all thought that meant um that statement meant to you I've been here for 20 years I can tell you what I think it means it means make it possible for make it a place that people want to come to work again want to come and can afford to come work at want to put those applications in for those openings the stacks that we used to get that we're now getting not even a handful of I realized a portion of this is out of your hands however if we've learned anything in the past year and a half of negotiations is that together we can move this town forward we must follow up with suggestions of the select board and the finance committee and work together to inform our community of the short and long-term needs of the school district because making Dartmouth competitive again cannot rest on the shoulders of the Dartmouth educator Association we need you the school committee to work is hard for us as we are working for this District so as we look forward to the next round of budget discussions which are coming so so soon I implore you to work together with the select board and the finance committee to help push the town to do whatever it takes to make Dartmouth competitive again thank you [Applause] thank you anyone else great hearing none okay I'm going to move on to the next item on our agenda which is the approval of minutes I have um I'll ask for a motion separately one for the regular session and one for the executive of May 15th so move for the regular session minutes of May 15 2023 all right a second fall for for a vote Kathleen Emerald yes Chris Oliver yes Elizabeth Coughlin yes Shannon Jenkins yes John Nunes yes thank you and for the executive for the same evening so move Madam chair with the stipulation today be held until the matter for which they were intended is complete I'll second that right any discussion roll call Emerald yes Chris Oliver yes Elizabeth Coughlin yes Shannon Jenkins yes John news yes thank you for that and um next on the agenda I'm going to turn it over to Mr Kylie for two uh consent items thank you Mrs Amber also the first item on the consent agenda is the DHS marching band and color guard can working uh on concessions at the stadium for our uh for our events there so each year those groups do an incredible job providing concessions for our events and those funds go to support their programs um so we'd like to continue that and we'll do so with a with a approval vote from you folks tonight motion to approve Madam chair Second Great any anyone have a discussion on the matter no they do a great job um roll call vote Kathleen Amaral yes Chris Oliver yes Elizabeth Coughlin yes Shannon Jenkins yes John Nunes yes great and so next is related to another consent item right so the next item up is the related is the smec lease of classroom space so the um smec collaborative leases two classroom spaces one at Dartmouth High School and one at the Quinn school they also this year have added a small office space at Dartmouth High School they've actually utilized that in the past but have um had not included that as something in their lease so it was good news to see that they are prepared to compensate us for that space and have added it in so we have the room uh it's great to have them in the building and we work very closely with them while it with these classrooms but overall for programs that they provide so um would like to continue that and would do so with the vote tonight all right all right does anyone have anything to ask about whether at the end happen to answer anything as well Dr Jenkins honey questions none all right with that I will um motion to approve the uh memorandum of agreement between the diamond school committee and the Southeastern Massachusetts educational collaborative for fiscal year 24.

okay so how did you by any chance work on and it might not be an abatement so I need correction on that first but in D300 with the Sears campus did you work on that yeah okay so there were some issues with that and I'm not totally sure and it was abatement if you know but with the payout to the district what does that look like and then such as Sears when they then left Illinois and they are now not around what does that look like let's say that happens in year eight of the 10 years what how do we rely on this income I guess is what I'm asking just if you're okay with it that Dr pesky moved on to a side where I think that it's built okay thank you and if it turns out that we don't he I do want to briefly note that I had an opportunity to speak with Kate outside and that was the first that we knew that that I knew that there was an ordinance even being drafted yet so I think there's some communication that we are trying to adjust through through some of the transitions at the county and at the village we have seen a number of recent abatement agreements from the county and that's what Dr petsky spoke to earlier those had these claw back protections yeah that you'll get to and that we think are important so that you're not encouraging investment in properties that are significantly larger than anything else that you have which also makes them more challenging to repurpose later yes so I'll let you move on to the next part and all right so just wanted to point out again just real quickly the community and District benefits you know based on the estimates that were shared by the village of Montgomery the proposed projection projects show promising indicators of development related investments in the community um increase in eav investments in infrastructure and utilities there's a large capital outlay for the the facilities there's some anticipated job creation and potential future site development that's that build the suit area that we were talking about and uh for us that additional industrial eav resulting in tax revenue for the school district and the other taxing bodies that's not dependent on the residential building that we see a lot of so I I'm assuming um a lot of work has been done in the consideration for the 75 and 50.

second that okay any discussion no roll call okay Kathleen Emerald yes Chris Oliver yes Elizabeth Coughlin yes Shannon Jenkins yes John Nunes yes great so moving on next we have our a nice presentation we do thank you Mrs Emerald so we have uh we'll invite Mr galshaw up to the podium for a presentation on technology in the district I'm going to take away my duties as floor director to take over here I just wanted to give you a very brief but riveting summation about technology to as the end of the year here we have a lot of things going on educational technology our technology in schools we have a very um a very nice situation by being able to work in the summertime because we can get a lot of things done usually during the year getting things done it's like it's like changing a flat tire of a car moving 60 miles an hour it doesn't always work but the Summer's a nice pause allowing us to do things so I wanted to give you an idea of where we've been and where we're going so thank you school committee for having me thank you for the people here join here tonight and the hundreds or thousands that are on online right now watching uh Mr perotti said that the numbers just bumped up as I was approaching the podium so that's nice thank you so um this is a current state or uh but I promise uh some people I'd be very brief so I will be brief all right I have five items like to talk about first being Hardware of course we have Chromebooks multitudes of Chromebooks laptops and servers that run things throughout the district in the summertime we'll be doing updates moving to about to maximize their use as well as integrating a few new ones for new employees that are coming on board also refurbishing the ones we have we can clean them up and get them running again so we can use them for other purposes and doing a massive inventory to find out where we are and what we what we've gone through and what we have in the district second item is software we have instructional software technical software administrative software we do a full review of educational software we've been doing that over the past few months of what we use in the classroom I'm sorry I heard my I heard someone was calling but not me uh my reaction um as well as with the instructional technology people we look at all of the software and make sure that they we produce usage data to make sure we're using it and maximizing our our software use and we've discontinued some products that aren't being used because it's not worth the money to keep them if they're not being used uh one of the ones that I'll talk about later is we're consolidating our communication software to a product called parent square and we're consolidating a few products into one so we're saving thousands of dollars by doing this and it's a much better product as well as multilingual and a lot of different aspects of it and there'll be more about that coming to the people watching at home and to the the staff we look at continuous training of software both for students and for teachers and the development of curriculum based on that software that we use we're also redoing the budget software budget sense to a new server and we'll be doing that and transferring that information and all that uh info of that budget information uh the third thing is instructional um products that we we do we the instruction we do for for um technology uh we talk to the students and the staff about uh Computer Care and usage uh taking care of it as well as a big Hot Topic which is cyber security uh both for students and teachers and Internet safety in regards to where to go and what the use of data privacy we're big on data privacy in the in the given of information for the people um we also will do a lot of training so we Master the software that we have to making the most out of the software that we've invested in number four is new technologies we will be revamping the website a lot of people have said wow that's really bad the the website has discontinued the company was bought out by another company so we're letting it ride to the summer and letting people get really tired of it really really look at it ugly so the drama and the Showmanship of unveiling the new website which we started doing for September with our new superintendent orientation will be super exciting I think the staff will be overwhelmed by it but uh a final site so it's the evolution of Blackboard into final site and I mentioned about the new communication tool again trying to gather everybody together on one system so it's good communication and these types of systems allow teachers and students to parent and parents all to talk by keeping it safe and private so uh it's all within the system so it's not like you have to give out your cell phone number or whatever you can control that on apps it'll add to the communication so it'll be doing a lot of trading trading for parents that are parent nights open house nights as well as for staff along the way very easy to use but we'll be there all the steps of the way and just talk about some of the projects we're working on this summer as I mentioned the summer is a great time to get things done because you can take things apart one of the things we're doing a massive replacement for Wi-Fi all right above us here replacing about 330 units that have become they've extended their full life so we've made full maximum life out of it and we got that through um we also got that 50 funded with a grant from the government for a program called e-rate uh we also are continuing our phone Replacements getting all of our phones on IP so that we can ultimately go on to an IP phone system called zip which will allow for 9-1-1 direct dialing something the state's requiring us to do so what it is is that if someone were to call 9-1-1 from a classroom they can pinpoint police and fire can pinpoint exactly where it came from so it's a very important thing the state is requiring it they've they eased regulations during Covey because they actually was instituted right before covid but they didn't want to do that to us during covet because we were already having a lot of things going on they've rekindled that thing and we'll be adhering to that we're adding intercom speakers and in certain places as well as security cameras doing walk throughs to make sure that we've maximized the sound of announcements in all buildings as well as coverage of security cameras in all buildings we're also rekindling that relationship with the police department who also have access to our intercoms and to our security cameras in the event of of something that might happen uh they have the ability to view cameras and it might be a very uh good advantage to the police to have the view of schools as well as the ability to speak on the intercom over the speaking system from the police department um we do a massive Chrome update we take all the Chromebooks and we clean them and update them and make sure they're all ready good to go and re relabel them if you will get them back in their carts or redistribute them in the fall to the kids and as I mentioned before the financial server we have budget sense we have a server that we've done budget since on we've pretty much given the life of the server I think it's about seven years old and we're going to be transferring it to a new server modern copy of an operating system it's protected now with antivirus and such but we will put it onto a new server do that same protection do a disaster recovery from there we wanted to um Mr Oliver very expensive very expensive and I think we have this server available and we can make that transfer and keep it a little low right now but I will keep tabs on that I'm talking to the company about it was just a really big jump and during this time I just it's Tyler right Tyler's technology we can still handle it but ultimately it would be better in the cloud but we do a full disaster recovery on the system we have internally so that's what it does is every 20 minutes it takes all the data puts it into the cloud and keeps it so but ultimately I would love to put the server all services to the cloud I imagine the server cluster that we have that manages the district when that age is out it'll probably go to the cloud file serving and stuff like that any questions and that was brief was that not right thank you oh good yes Mr Oliver I expected too thank you thank you Mr galashaw uh the the Wi-Fi the Wi-Fi upgrade the telephone upgrade I know we're talking about hundreds of thousands of dollars there fifty percent of your rate reimbursement on that is this typically what we would um see from you utilize some of the two hundred thousand dollars that we would be receiving from the town on this um so that's that's we're kind of scrimping and saving down to the penny to make it happen because it's really important that it happens I agree I don't have the flexibility and I'm concerned that when I went back to the first item we will be refurbishing a lot of equipment because in the luxury what we had we used to be able to hand a computer to a teacher a new computer we might be really going digging deep and trying to repair the one we have to give to the teacher so in other words you had to shift it's something that's just ultimately important it's only one piece of the project Mr Oliver it's the first part with the Wi-Fi units which expire June of 23 right now so we've the the end of life is the end of this month so it's something we have to do for the fall they'll work they just won't get updates correct and that's always concerning correct now as far as the um the Chromebooks go and obviously a ECF emergency connectivity funding has ended with the federal government how are we looking uh with supporting our one-to-one program across the yeah same thing we kind of scrapped the idea of buying new Chromebooks usually for the the fifth graders and the ninth graders we're going to shuffle a few to make to accommodate the fifth graders and and just we're scrounging what we've done is we've taken Chromebooks that were older and out of uh update ability would therefore not be able to be used by MCAS and we're going to push them down to the first and second grades still very usable Chromebooks but they will not be able to do MCAS which is okay because we don't need to do MCAS integrates one and two so their their Auto expiration date has already come but they work and again scrimping and saving so I've always appreciated the generosity of the the town and the school committee yeah but this is one of the years I'm going to get tight you know it's just because there it is one last question what does your department consist of who how many staff yeah how many staff immediate staff resurfacing technology yeah means staff we have a technician a server person a network person a data person and a secretary and myself so that's that's what we have in the immediate group um we also have instructional technology people one was not uh replaced but we have them in each of the schools and we have a district-wide technology person that was doing the data privacy which is we have another year of that through Esser funds so somehow we're going to do a little bit of supporting the high school during that time with that extra person but it's something I'll have to come back to you and address in the future yeah I just I've always been a proponent for for Staffing and I know Staffing's always tight but technology runs everything without technology it would be very difficult to have school each day yeah and they're and they're the um the threats are there as you know uh it is a continuous job monitoring that Network trying to do the antivirus for the servers um and special projects and also the repairs uh for the Chromebooks their Chromebooks are great machines but they're they're they're very economically built so they they do break and especially in the hands of children that um you know are are rugged and they and they just they're not expensive machines so we do what we can to uh kind of Frankenstein them a little bit put borrow keyboards from one to build another one so call me Dr Frankenstein thank you thank you very much yeah thank you for those questions anyone else have anything we'll just say you know I've talked about my lack of computer knowledge and it is what it is type of deal and I appreciate I appreciate this and I appreciate everything that you do for the for the district and such and you know keeping you know everything put together with uh you know bailing chewing gum and bailing wires sometimes you know with as you kind of mentioned here type of deal so anything that we can do we'll do the best we can and I think that's a tribute to it and I'm not just sucking up but the staff I have is incredible um it's them it really is uh just they're dedicated beyond words weekends nights they just love what they do they're first class nerds oh I said that out loud um no they really are and they love what they do and the district is very fortunate to have all of them they're dedicated yeah you know them all I'm sure you've intertwined with all of them somewhere thank you Dr Jenkins do you have anything to ask or ADD I'll just say thank you to Mr galashaw he does a lot of great work including helping Mr perrotti get me all set up on Zoom tonight so thank you for everything you do for the district thank you Dr Jenkins and and I yeah I don't really have any um thoughtful questions to ask Mr rely on my colleague over here for his uh technology and yours so um I don't know technology yeah I don't either so it works out yeah and I guess I just would say that I just appreciate your uh your candor and uh and and in this really difficult time and your ability to be flexible in your staff and and um you know it's it's a shame that we're here but um yeah we'll get there we'll get there and so we're really lucky to have you and and Mr Kylie you know at the helm uh to really work through some of these things where and together the public that doesn't is watching doesn't know me that well I am the voice that speaks to you but that besides that um I I joke and I bring levity because you know it's if you technology can be very uh overwhelming and disappointing at times so I think I try to bring levity but when it comes to doing technology I'm dead serious because I just I really it's a passion I know I joke and stuff like that but it's only to make life just to ease the moment because it's very um teachers are up there in front of kids it has to work yeah it must be unnerving to to lose something in technology while you have 25 you know sets of eyes in front of you so yeah and if we can't really get our town out you're appreciative we're appreciative but if we can't get them we have to maintain it it's a forever the value of a public education I don't know if we're going to get them to understand the technology piece is really a critical part of that so um but we'll work on it and technology has become a utility it's just something you have to pay like the electric bill and the water bill it's just like I say to my husband when he asks something really silly it's not 1986.
