seconded all those in favor aye aye aye all those I oh I apologize all right motion carries four to zero and if if I may just make a point um so I I vote I with the hopes that over the next of a couple years that we can um be able to transition completely and save a lot of money for the district when you compare the annual cost thank you Mrs Schultz I'm sorry I just want to say that I agree with Miss Van Hook in that I voted I initially when we heard this and the cost last week I was leaning um towards leaving asba but I'm hoping with the four years and the fact that we can't just do a year or two um is difficult but hopefully we can move towards saving the district money and move towards the trust in the future as well thank you Mrs Schultz okay moving on to item 6.3 I move that the governing board approved the proposed expenditure budget for fiscal year 2023-2024 as presented seconded all those in favor aye all those that opposed I just I have a question I don't can I ask a question um so by voting either way um does that mean that we would be voting yes or no on the levy regardless we we have to have a proposed budget approved if the board we do have some time in which the proposed budget there's a drop dead date so I think I guess I would recommend that the board make you some notion that the board of like a pursue the tax levy on the adopted um and this vote if not I will remove it or yes or no and if there's an indication a majority that the board would like to pursue this I'll include it on the adopted presentation in June on June 28th if not then I will remove that um from the adopted budget I just think that that requires a separate vote because that's a that's a tax that we're putting on the community I mean it would similar to like a a bond or override that would require a separate vote um and I I don't know if I feel comfortable voting for the entire budget with that item on there well then I would just recommend then that the board vote either know just keep in mind we will have to have a special session to bring the budget back proposed but you're back with that change off so if you do not um want that under the vote no if uh if you do then vote yes that's my recommendation thank you for asking that question um assumption yes it was all included and it's good to know that it was I didn't think that through um Miss uh Mr Moore how will that information be publicized outside of just a posting on our website will that be something sent out to our community and informing them of the tax increase if it does pass this afternoon yeah so there's several rules that require us to to post that information so one it's already being posted in the generally circulated publication so the Arizona Republic meets that standard this will also be sent to the the two local papers within Gilbert as well as it's posted on our website so we meet the publication requirements set aside by the Arizona Department uh the Arizona General so that's where you can find that information and then my contact list information is listed on there as well so if there's any questions I can certainly be reached on the since this is an increase of tax to our community can I make the recommendation that it is sent out in some sort of news letter information or email I understand that there are some people that that don't appreciate a lot of over communication but I am and I think there are others that that do especially in this manner that would appreciate that information to go out there if it does pass this afternoon thank you all right I'm going to restate the motion um in lieu of the information that was given so thank you for your input all right item 6.3 I move that the governing board approved the proposed expenditure budget for fiscal year 2023-2024 as presented I still second that all right all those in favor aye was that an eye Miss Schultz did you understand that Ms Zimmerman can you state it once more please miss Schultz hi thank you I all those that oppose nay motion carries three to one moving on to item 6.4 I moved the governing board approve the fiscal year 2022 audit reports as presented second all those in favor I motion carries four to zero item 6.5 I move that the governing board approved the purchase of the firewall and the firewall and services in the amount of 665.82 cents from high tech start huh sorry a second all those all those in favor aye aye aye aye motion carries four to zero may I ask a question about that do you have any information on um this expense or would that require I.T yeah Mr Van Hook we did invite it here today perfect Mr Jim pasik and Robert trope um now um I had submitted um some questions in um maybe I did maybe I didn't um but what is the uh reason for this is for the firewall correct um yes yes ma'am it is the firewall and I know typically um a lot of companies like to replace them after five years but is there a reason for the replacement is there um I mean are we out of space or you know is there some things that it's just not capable of handling anymore what's the purpose so um thank you for the question the the purpose of the replacement is that it is in fact end of life so it is time to to replace it but furthermore we want to take the opportunity at this juncture since we are going to replace we hope to replace it um to change the configuration of our infrastructure to add some durability and redundancy to our internet and so what that will allow is is we we currently have a plan it's still in in flux but the current plan is to uh engage with a second internet provider so we'll have two internet providers uh splitting the district basically along our High School feeder teams one provider for the Williams Field team one provider for the Higley High team we'll have enough capacity in each of those in each of those pipes that if we were to experience an internet issue with within a few hours we would be able to cut over from one provider to the other and so changing the firewall to the new configuration at this time with it being end of life will allow us to go through that process um this fall and into the spring we intend to make those changes if at all feasible before testing in the spring and and our current one doesn't have that capability it does not okay thank you so much you're very welcome thank you for that information great question item 6.6 moving on I moved the governing board approved the memorandum of under memorandum of understanding between the homeless youth connection and Higley Unified School District seconded any questions or comments I do have a question who do I ask for this yeah great Melissa Garland she's here to assist you thank you so when I read this contract one concern that I had on there is it says that parental consent is required to participate in the program parental or Guardian but then after that um it's not required for them to provide resources to the student or be able to um send this you know any type of resources or recommendations to the child that parental consent is not required after that and I'm um I'm wondering if that is somehow impacts like our parental rights law that's in place board member Van Hook that contract when it um states that parental consent is needed for a child to participate that creates that working relationship between hyc and the district so for example when we identify a teen who is homeless and they sometimes they're unaccompanied we do get parental consent too for us to allow hyc to provide those Services it's not once they build that working relationship the youth coach that is assigned to that student is in contact with that parent throughout the process the purpose of this program is to supplement what we what we have to provide through the mckinney-vento ACT they are able to help these students not only finish High School successfully but help them into adulthood as well and so they're just there to help guide them and provide things that we as a district cannot through the mckinney-vento ACT thank you and is there when when they come on campus and meet with students is there typically somebody from the district that's also there or is it just their their representative with the child typically tip it's the counselor who is in charge of that caseload so in our district we have a contact person that myself and the homeless liaison Allison Clark that we communicate with and at the high schools it's one counselor who is um who kind of takes that lead so they're the ones that help set up those meetings and I know you've probably noticed in the mou that it states that they understand it's important for students to be in the class as much as possible they really try their hardest to make sure those quick meetings happen sometimes they could be before school or after school but it's always in conjunction with when it works for the student and some and the parent at times will attend I've attended some as well we just want to make sure that we're all working collectively to help that student the best we can and I just want to make sure that like the whole um parental or Guardian contact isn't um missed because obviously the homelessness would cause like lack of Internet um email access and things like that um so I just want to ensure that absolutely obviously we would we would you know assume that they're following within the Arizona you know parental Bill of Rights and and making sure that that parent is included or Guardian um if you know there's somebody that's in charge of this child whether homeless or not um and I want to ensure that that's being included in there absolutely it always is we would never we would never um introduce that partnership into the um the situation with the student without the parent or guarding no knowing what we were doing and they they agree and sometimes they decline if they decline that's fine it's up to them thank you and and do we um is it possible to get a number of like how many students within the district typically it's less than 10 that we refer to them in a school year so it's not very many but it's really important and it's a very good service that we can partner with I agree thank you so much thank you thank you um we have had this seconded so I will move on to all those in favor aye aye motion carries four to zero moving on to 6.7 I move that the governing board authorized the expenditure of one million 35 [Music] .
⚗ AI-reconstructed · cite from original above
I will move that the board approved the reduction of adjustments to the 2023-2024 budget in the amount of 126 275 dollars as recommended by the finance subcommittee and that the board adopt its budget in the amount of 50 million 384 287 a 3.53 increase over the current budget as voted on at the May 3rd 2023rd Town budget referendum second okay moved and seconded Mr post I'll turn it over to you to walk us through what the process has been and what the conclusions have been sure Dr Brill did you want to go through the the process first I think you did a good job explaining just give a little brief update Canada let you go through the details so thank you um so as we discussed with the um committee a special meeting earlier this week to review the 126 000 reduction when we initially had the first referendum that failed some of the talk in the community up through the rest of that week was that it could be as much as a half a million dollars so we immediately held two different meetings with our leadership team which includes our principals and really started to think about if way if we had this dramatic of a cut what would we do and so we started to come up with some uh a list which includes what's on here today in addition to some other more uh intense of something called Draconian type cuts that we might have to make share that with Mr Belden who talked with the uh Board of finance that that next Friday and shared some of that information when we found out that we were down to a 126 uh 26 000 reduction we had another couple of meetings with the leadership team and really sharpened the pencil and also got some updated uh information in terms of different estimates and different uh cost lines and so that's what the we ultimately recommended from the team strong consensus brought it to the finance committee who is recommending it uh for approval tonight as the specific reductions to the already adopted budget uh from the board uh Ken can walk us through those specific details okay I'll turn it over to you thank you Dr Brown so the first item on the list is professional development which came out of the assistant superintendents department and the uh what we call the epidippy which is the contractual obligation in the teacher's contract bringing that number down to um a number more in the range of what it really actually falls in every year after having a conversation with the teachers union president letting them know we were doing that as we did a few years ago when we had a very tight budget um we have a lot of Title II money available which is specifically for professional development so I know we talked a lot about that tonight so I think I'm very confident that we have enough funding to do whatever we need to do through that um instructional supplies some of the principles went went back through and identified some specific consumables and manipulatives that they would be able to do without for the year and to put that in context our total instructional Supply budget is usually in the neighborhood of 350 to 400 000 so this is a relatively small amount um you'll see a few items on here such as other supplies furniture and Equipment which is uh repurposing things that the middle school and high school principal found at Huckleberry they will be taking such as a laminator instead of buying a new one there's one working over there that we can take and move uh we are going to delay purchasing a couple of textbooks totaling about 9 7 56 dollars at uh Center School in wisconeer Professional Services from whiskey near a thousand dollars uh where the prince will be principal will be seeking uh grant money from either from the bef or the PTO extended Duty primarily at clas and some at BHS really related a lot of it related to the capacity to get all of the work done we're finding that and by capacity I mean you know people's willingness to put a lot of this work in over the Summers and there's just it seems to be less of it the last couple of years so we think we're bringing this down to a more realistic number technology Eric found additional grant funding that he's going to use for Chromebooks so he can take I'm sorry Smart Boards so he can take that out of the budget without without getting any less our LEP which is a liability in property insurance and workers comp insurance like on the final renewals which came in lower than we budgeted and then keeping the director of instruction at an 11 month as is in these existing contract saves us 12 946 and then the replacement savings from uh from my successor another 15 321 and that brings us to the 126 275 dollar total thank you Ken you're welcome [Music] um oh oh sorry yep it's on um so yeah the the finance subcommittee had a special meeting this past Monday uh we reviewed each one of these um line items and um we're actually very pleased with it and all in some it's just a very painless um you know most of it is sort of just kind of like John was saying sharpening the pencil you know kind of finding efficiencies repurposing um not a lot of drastic drastic Cuts so and certainly nothing Personnel related so that's always good any questions okay all in favor okay thank you Kim thank you that officially makes it um eight months of budgeting right that uh eight and a half eight and a half months of budgeting and yay all right um so the um next item is a Candlewood Lake Elementary School uh building project all right thanks Eric here all right so here's the main entrance um yeah there you go oh yeah sorry so yeah so here's the main entrance you can kind of see like that um I believe it's called is it the East East Brook East Brook has actually been is now Visual and it's a it's a whole landscape um design element of the of the property so it's really starting to look nice all the brick work is done you know you can see like on on the front as well this is coming around like the back side of the building all the brick work the wood the metal paneling is getting done the main stairwells are finally going in which is great um you can kind of see there's like a platform almost up here so from the second level it comes down a couple steps there's a nice big platform that looks into the multi-purpose space and then it comes down into the rest of the the main entryway there this is um that multi-purpose space so the stage is done all the wall panelings are done this is like that special acoustic type of wall paneling that's gonna really make musical performances sound really great in there um the terrazzo flooring in the cafeteria looks fantastic um this looks like it's polished up right yep kind of looks like it's covered now but yeah yeah so um so it's covered for protection now but it's kind of you'll see these sort of patterns just continue up into the designs on the wall and into the ceiling more of the terrazzo flooring um kind of in the first floor administrative area the gym kind of looks like a staging area still a little bit but looks like it's getting more organized so that's I think it's important for everybody to know by Design the gym um because of its ability to store kind of like you saw with a multi-purpose room although that's more finished the gym has always been planned as the last room to be completed so the gross motor area um this is adjacent to the gym so a lot of the wall elements are are installed and I think it's probably even progressed farther than this since these pictures were taken but the um you can see the the beautiful sort of cloud and lighting elements that are up in that area and the terrazzo flooring this is down in the the lower grade cafeteria so that's really starting to look really nice more of pictures of that cafeteria the entry into the neighborhoods those are those are starting to look really nice um there's going to be screens and projections up on the walls and um all the the ceiling paneling is in classrooms are done um most I mean all the classrooms on the on the top levels are are done the floors are protected and they look fantastic we even actually got to see some of the furniture in so that was nice yeah Rose if I made the upper uh level floors are done in terms of the classroom floors with the carpet tile the three lower grade Wings the second grade Wing is having the um grinding work and adhesive put down and then the tile will be finished in there they believe next week and they'll continue moving into to finish the flooring everything else is done the flooring in grade one and then in kindergarten and Pre-K some more of the terrazzo flooring some of the the patterns are just really beautiful and these are throughout all the hallways and they tie into obviously the theme of each neighborhood um I think the kids are going to absolutely love it um the media center um still looks like it's a little on the unfinished side but um there is glass work that you can't see in there so there's a lot of glass work that has gone in um some of the um the Amphitheater seating so there's so that whole area is being nicely landscaped there's lighting that's in that area it's really turning out to be a nice Gathering Place for performances and other types of learning activities more of the terrazzo designs because of the dragonflies this was a little out of water from the project but it's all right the main floor Terrazzo which looks amazing um there's this whole Like Water Theme where um you know it looks just like the stream that you see on the outside um there's this stream that kind of goes through the main the main hallway and while we embrace the Eastbrook that is um the model of the still River as well in the naval and it's not polished yet but yeah let's go so this was the unearthing of those pipes that were below the um the the fields essentially that were in the back of Huckleberry at one point um so that once the beautiful landscaping kind of comes in this is going to be a really nice um semi-flowing some of the year um little riverbed so it'll be really nice some more pictures of that Amphitheater some a lot of the furniture is in so the office furniture is in we saw a lot of the classroom Furniture so it looks really good and that's last picture so looks great thanks Rosa yeah every time we see it it's looking a little more finished a lot of progress so um John I'm getting requests from the Press if they could bring a photographer in could we was we're getting closer to finished I know that MBC has control of the building until it's ready but we ought to start talking to them about when would be an appropriate time so a couple couple updates on that so the before I go there Bob if I if I might I really want to give kudos to our administrative team our faculty and staff custodians the project managers we are full steam ahead on packing and preparing for moving so it's just all the extra work that's going into that um not only throughout the whole year but right now it's crunch time and so I just can't thank everyone enough for that and there is excitement for it as well um it's kind of Labor of Love at this point um the other piece uh just want to give everybody an update on small Wares uh talked with Rob tenza who's the original project manager is handling that part um everything looks like it's in order and it needs one more green light from the state and they'll be ordering from the smallwares playscape has that third party review that should take place next week we could then get the green light from the state and move forward on the playscapes so um on our end we've done everything we could we're just waiting on the uh the red tape at this point to get the approvals um and uh to answer your question Bob I actually had a conversation with Paul this week talking about getting in uh media opportunity uh also um Alan who does some of our homemade videos or Alan made videos to get in there and have an opportunity not only to capture students and staff with some of the packing and some of their anticipation but also opportunity to get in the building and see some of the different parts I think the NBC wants to have things a little bit more finished before they they let anybody in there and so uh Paul and I are working on that and right on in alignment we just need to answer the question of the press I told them I would probably be in August right then um when it's more finished and like we said we really on a number of occasions in uh communicating with parents we really cannot wait to get the kids and parents in there to tour the building and see so as soon as we have that certificate of occupancy whether that's mid or Late July or you know sometime in August as soon as we can we're going to move we've actually worked with policy Communications committee kind of brainstorming some fun ideas to bring everybody together and of course a ribbon cutting ceremony and all of that well related to that did you have something wrong definitely a quick question is it 100 that it's set to open September I don't think we have a choice and and yes the the debate and some of the angst uh right now and uh the back and forth between our Ong our construction company and the NBC and frankly Administration is we were waiting on that updated schedule from the last NBC meeting that we were all at and um there were some deadlines for third week and fourth week of June in terms of I think I alluded to it earlier getting our administrative team in Candlewood Lake and working from there and that's still up in the air right now I'm going to be completely honest um the alternative plan will be to work at whiskaneer and we'll obviously communicate with everybody when we're there that involves our administrative administrative summer administrator workers and our secretaries and of course technology team and custodians so those are the folks summer impacted uh parents and students wouldn't feel or see any of that uh struggle if you will that we'll be working through to make sure we're ready to go for uh opening for Labor Day after Labor Day but it's also important to note for parents like when you drop your kids off that first day it's not going to look like this beautifully finished site I mean remnants of the building are definitely still going to be there from Huckleberry it's all going to be dirt like driveways um there'll be sidewalks but a lot of the sight work still has to go into Landscaping her and into next spring the site work Dave and I are actually we're pending a letter right now to next week as kind of a closure to the year getting excited and ready and one of the things we mentioned is right away like I said earlier tonight you're not going to see just massive quick demolition of Huckleberry that's not how the process works the south parking lot will be finished to start the year as well as a temporary parking lot Paving that's on the schedule it has to be done um whether something changes if that has to be done and so then the temporary parking lot will probably be gravel right yeah and so that's to make sure we have enough space and we might not have all of the driveways we have to have enough room for buses um there may be um logistical things we need to do with parent drop-off um and the first couple of months of the school year and we will be in the building but to your point there will be some muddy or dirty areas and the building will not necessarily be fully down uh if it is fully down depending on how they work their schedule the work will be going on to build the north parking lot the north parking lot is scheduled to be complete before the asphalt plants close prior to Thanksgiving time so the parking lot will be done but then in the spring of 24 Finish Landscaping plantings things like that in the spring of 24 will have still have to occur so I'm glad you brought that up that we're going to allude to that in the letter we're drafting okay all right thank you um that related to that there's uh something that we have to talk about on the Board of Education meeting location so we have a motion for that and then I'll explain it I will move that the board authorized the superintendent to move the location of the regular Board of Education meetings to Candlewood Lake Elementary School starting with July 2023 depending on facility availability just this background we have we have all talked about having some of our board meetings over there we approved our board meeting list for the dates at our last meeting but we inadvertently put that they're always in this room so what this motion does is gives Dr Burrell depending on when that uh that multi-purpose room is available to us the ability to move the meeting over to that facility and we'll try it out and if we like it we can continue to meet over there right or get or we could come back a meeting here so but this that's what the motion is just gives some flexibility against something that was hardwired to always do it in this room so so that's the background maybe Eric give us a demonstration of that thing in the gym yeah yeah and yeah Mike I'm glad you're saying it the whole point of trying to have the meetings there is we want to showcase the new facility and have opportunity before and maybe even after if it's an earlier uh ending meeting uh to have people tour the facility and have some of our student leaders bring bring parents and citizens through so we're really all walking around with a phone like this and saying okay I'm going down this hall now it's gonna be great um so uh so all in favor of that flexibility for Dr Brill to change it okay public comment this is our second round of public comment and uh we have two people who had signed up for the second round and Mr Korea you were first I think you're still here foreign so during the correct this is mostly about the correct presentation I was able to um pretty much fast scan the whole report while she was presenting and some things stood out to me and then also listening to the representative overall I think it was an awful presentation um primarily because uh you had a lot of the um her script and what she said really hid the truth right she had to bend over backwards to to say things in a non-negative way right and it's kind of this thing in education where you know you don't fire somebody they resign on their own right anything negative gets kind of polished up a little bit um you know she sugarcoat stuff so there was one key thing statement that she made is Steph wants a relationship with the the um the leadership administrator of the special education department right and that's you know I think we're kidding ourselves you know if we look at it that way I mean I think we really know what happened right and when you go through some of the data a lot of it's you know sort of everything in what she and also what she said a lot of stuff turned around literally in one year right so this was really a lot about personnel and Leadership there are also specific data data in there that stands out if you look on page 36 you'll see some aspect data and Brookfield s back results are half for students with disability of pretty much all the other comparative towns for the 20 2021 school year and it's less than half of Brookfield the year before right so there was a huge crash in 2021 that didn't occur elsewhere so there's something going on there and that's that's you know that wasn't in bright flashing lights up here I didn't see that right that's something that she should have come in here and said um you know 50 she said 50 of parents are okay with the services right and that's also listed on page 17 and 19 or with their child's progress I mean also sorry 17 19 their parents are okay 50 of parents are okay with the services provided on the page 37 parents are okay with their child's progress but 50 is low right and our experience with uh parents of special education students particularly what I've talked with kids in Brook my parents in Brookfield it's they came here for the schools and they trusted the schools it doesn't really mean that the progress is okay it just takes some time to figure it out right and a lot of the failures come by pushing off services in the elementary schools and then they get worse in middle school and that's when you find out and I don't I didn't feel that that was highlighted you had to dig for it right I think the board should bring her back and have her speak plainly because of a parent if a parent or a person in the community to go to watch this video and they they really didn't know how to look on you know behind the scenes of what was being said they would think everything's pretty good right I mean there was a lot of there was a lot of focus on what's going well and there's um page 27 is the special director said there's no predetermination going on in the district that's just patently false right so I will write up the rest of my um concerns and send it over to you but thank you I don't think that this presentation was representative of what was in that report and I think it was sugarcoated and I don't think a lot of people are going to think 46 Pages thank you okay Mr Montero [Applause] all right awesome Ontario 17 Dairy Farm Drive that's way past my bedtime so uh bear with me here but um two things really tonight one I want to talk about and Mr belanda brought it up just the overall process with the request for reconsideration of books in my experience how it's been I submitted my form on April 21. we did have a meeting over the phone on May 1st with Mr belanda and the two Librarians which I believe breaks policy already um at that point nobody has had read the book I've personally read the book five times I reached out again May 17 just to get an update of where we are at at that point they're still forming committee and according to our emails again the book had not been read at that point so now we're pushing a month without even opening this book up on May 31st I emailed Mr belanda again to get a status update and he gave that today which was that they were meeting on Monday June 5 two days ago and I would have an update by the end of the week so that's 47 days from my form submission no reply yet 37 days from my meeting with Mr belanda and the Librarians no answer yet so at this point it's hard to see how that's not in some way shape or form just dragging your feet and slung the process down purposely the book takes two hours to read it's an easy read after 10 minutes I believe we can make a decision and move forward here in some way shape or form and I'm fully open to making whether it's yes no or some sort of compromise in the middle I think people are open to to that idea um and just a second point I just want to make a comment publicly about the whole book ban crisis here that's going on in Connecticut um to me I see it more is a fear-mongering approach a more realistic description is all classic literature is still available what we have is some disagreements over a small small number of explicit obscene works that are in libraries throughout the state that I fear will be will go into the curriculum down the road as was mentioned at the Newtown Board of Ed meeting last week and what we're basically looking for is you know especially after covid parents are just unwilling to defer to a unilateral Authority an expert especially who was not read said books and for them to decide what children should have access to without Democratic oversight or any parental oversight I feel is wrong and we shouldn't be open to public discourse on that topic without getting any hate any negativity any of that so again I hope this process moves along quicker I hope we can get this to a board of ed meeting and see where we can go from there and again I've talked to other people and we'll say this side of the coin there is opening I think to a negotiation of maybe there's an opt-in version an opt-out version of Parental Advisory sticker something along those lines so appreciate your time and uh thank you all right that's it for tonight uh three main points what do you guys think crap crack for sure I think and I think we have to talk about the no the kids the record all the records yeah recognition in general I mean should it be the budget I mean that's how we communicate yeah yeah I think that's right let's just do the budget as the third budget we work with uh Damiana or just make get that word WWE and I already communicated this way she's gonna get the video of the meeting and she'll still work the three main points okay so it's going to be the recognitions correct and budget yep um okay uh upcoming events we're getting into the quiet season the last day of school for all schools is next Wednesday June 14th and it's an early release um Center School has a summer reading whole school assembly kickoff this Friday June 9th Huckleberry has the grade four end of year party at the YMCA on June 9th um whiskey deer has the eighth grade dinner dance this Saturday June 10th and the high school has the grad walk on June 13th and of course graduation on June 17th that is all I have okay thank you um all right so we are going to enter into an executive session so for those you listening we will be uh slopping the broadcast at this point in time we'll we will adjourn the meeting after our executive session yep so could I have the motion for the executive session that the board enter into executive session for the purpose of finalizing the assistant superintendent's contract Director of Business operations contract unaffiliated salaries and foreign [Music] microphones to be foreign test one two test one two test test test test one two test test test test test test one two wow foreign ly go Your go-to solution for getting quality work done quickly yo mode most boosters that are just streaming games or whatever probably never click the studio mode button but let's let's see what that studio mode button does you like this video please subscribe and click that little bell for notifications when we release a new video welcome to pull my focus adventures in the world of digital filmmaking where we bring you the inside tips on making great digital video Studio mode uh Studio mode allows you to change your scenes in the background without your viewers being able to see you making those changes okay so for example if I am here and if I click Studio mode now right we said before this is kind of the preview program monitor it's the same monitor all monitors you know one to rule them all is what I said if I click on so that when I click on scene one I'm changing not only my preview what my work area but also what the people see what people actually see okay if I switch to Studio mode with a click of a button I get these two windows one called program the other one called preview program is what the viewers will see preview is what I am preparing for the viewers to see and notice you also have transition here and then you have access to some quick Transitions and what's called a t-bar okay this is kind of a digital t-bar so this is the uh it's the digital equivalent of the actual transition bar that's on a live a full Studio setup okay now right now program and preview are exactly the same because when I came out of preview mode it just split it into two but if I switch to scene two okay notice that my preview is now scene two but my program is still going out to my viewers this is still going out to my viewers now remember this this wipe here what I said was the General wipe the Luma wipe is going to be triggered if I click this transition button that Luma wipe just happened actually let's make it a second so you can see it happen again and what happened was it swapped now what was from the program is now in the preview what was in the preview is now in the program if I do that please hit this button again Boom the transition happens for the viewer and it transitions to what's in the preview so this allows me to do things like you know change my scene let's see let's change to this lower third and then hit transition using this wipe transition boom now I can say all right now I want them to look at the the girl drinking the coffee and I'm going to change the wipe to a fade over one second boom fade over one second okay why is this important well this becomes really important when your actual broadcast using an actual broadcast because the operator needs to see what they're working on another thing you'll notice in studio mode is you have access to Quick transitions right so you have predefined areas to just do instead of using the default transition which is a fade I could simply click the cut button and do a cut okay or I can have this set to say Luma wipe but still do a 300 millisecond fade by clicking that button and of course there's always under Luma wipe right of course there's always the t-bar which allows you to do some cool stuff with the t-bar once it's fully over it switches projector what's a projector projector is terrific four I'm going to switch this over a projector is terrific for displaying either your preview or your program in a window in a separate monitor completely if you're in a kind of more of a professional broadcast setup you it would be great if you have I have three screens here it would be great if I could put you know my preview stuff on one screen my program stuff on another screen and my OBS interface on a third screen if you are in basic mode in preview mode and you right click you can say full screen projector or windowed projector notice how it says full print full screen projector preview and which monitor you want to go to since I have four monitors I'm going to just go to the model number one boom and it shows a full screen non-interactive really um unless you have certain plugins not interactive display that's how you can display it to another screen I'm hit Escape I can set this to go to any of my screens and I will have a full screen of my preview that I can look at nice and clean and that's great because that'll allow you to see things like nice and big close up you can also say windowed which brings up a nice window that you can size around right and put wherever you want really if you want to see the program projector you need to be in studio mode so I'm going to click Studio mode okay and then let's switch this scene back to here so when I click the right right when I right clicked on preview I got full screen projector preview or windowed projector preview if I click on the right click the only thing I have options here is there's obviously obviously a screenshot but full screen projector program and windows projector program now if I did say full screen protected program on this screen it's hard to believe mint's new family plan is just 15 a month per person so I've asked my wife I see that if I do a windowed projector I see that okay and this allows you to watch this I'm going to have my program and imagine these are separate screens my preview up at the same time and this effectively is you know this is one monitor this is not a monitor it's my main Monitor and when I transition between the two it does exactly what my program and preview in my interface do all right so that's how you get that's how you use projectors and that's what they're useful for multi-view multi-view is another thing that uh most non kind of professional uh setup OBS streamers probably will never look at multi-view is a great way to allow the operator the the t-bar operator to see everything on one screen every camera well not everything but the first say top number of scenes you have so if I come up to let's say we're in studio mode now I don't need to be in studio mode I can actually not be in studio mode but if you come up to view and go multi-view okay I'm going to do a windowed multi-view boom this window multi-view now shows me the top eight scenes in a in all in one window this is terrific because this allows you to do certain things right number one you can monitor if say where these are all different cameras like this one here is this one here is a camera foreign so scene Seven over here scene Seven is my camera and my socks um Scene Three is something else right so if we go back to this multi-view right here now I get access to all of these since I'm in preview mode since I'm in preview mode I can click each of these windows and not only does it change the preview but it also changed the program okay so one click will do my Automatic Transition all right if we get if we go to Studio mode okay once again and I set this to scene two we'll transition over to it I set this to scene Seven or scene six okay and now we go View multi-view windowed okay here's my multi-view I know it's a little confusing because I'm all on one screen but now when I click I'm changing the preview I'm not affecting what's coming out in the program over here I'm only changing the preview which comes in handy too if this was a separate screen on a separate window instead of me having to hit the scenes here just just the top eight scenes just the top eight scenes because if I had a thousand scenes here there's no real estate for all those scenes but this allows me to click around you know and and it's so it might be a little bit of better interface for some people but multi-view basically is that it's a multiple view on one screen or window of the top eight or I think there's a setting for 24 uh scenes thanks for watching make sure to check out all of our other obs

welcome everybody to East Longmeadow Massachusetts for tonight's girls lacrosse matchup of the East Longmeadow Spartans Hometown versus the Holliston Panthers round of 16 state playoffs I'm Jeff Morneau I'm here with my co-host Josh Weiss Josh what do you think of the matchup tonight should be a great one Holliston had a terrific upset in the first round of the tournament and uh had a chance to watch a little bit of their game and I think this really comes down to the speed and quickness of East Longmeadow against the the sort of the height and and perhaps a little physical prowess of uh Hollister and and we'll see where that plays out yeah looking forward to a great match East Longmeadow having a great season coached by uh coach by Katie Moses to me an assistant coach Liz Mazza doing a great job tonight's production put on by lcat Don Mackey and Jamie Rook here again tonight on the video and uh the announcer for tonight's game as he has been all season Mark macarini looking forward to a great matchup East Longmeadow is in the white hollison is in the red a little bit interesting it's the same colors for both teams so East Longmeadow for those of you watching on the live stream each East Longmeadow is going to be in the home field white and Holliston is going to be the away team in the red looks like we're about to get started Anna macarini on the draw for East Longmeadow on the circle number six Megan morno and number one Kenna Marino looks like we're about to get started two great referees looking forward to a good fun fair match attracted Ally Thompson's on the draw with still mourno and Mourinho on number 24 Martha Walker on the circle looks like number 19 Anderson Hastings will be taking the draw other player in the circles a little too far away for me to see to see who's actually on this circle there for Holliston that looks like number three for Holliston uh Caitlyn quilly the umpire's refs are having a little bit of a conversation here [Music] not quite sure what's going on looks like there's already a question about the legality of the draw coach Moses who is intimately familiar with all of the rules I would call her you know one of the she's clearly knows all the rules of the game um could be a stick issue they're talking about already coaches on the field coming out to talk about it to referees are there looks like coach Moses I think what we have here is um East Longmeadow uses a draw stick one of those special draw sticks by gate um and so I think that these we have in the state tournament they're not the local officials so they're not familiar with East Longmeadow and so I think they're going over the actual rules of the draw stick and the referees are probably not used to that not many high school teams use that procedure and so they're just going to familiarize themselves with that actual with that particular rule um to make sure that they get it right before the game starts so I'm sure once they look this up or make a call they'll understand that you know Eastlawn Meadow has been doing this all season long yeah I'm a little surprised though it's not it's not uniform across the state well the rule is uniform across the state but not all teams use a draw stick where they replace it as the game's going on and so I think that they just made that aware that the officials are probably not familiar with that and the rule and so they're checking it now it looks like they're texting somebody maybe just confirming what coach Moses says the rule is um letting letting them know I'm sure they'll get it right you know we've got a nice night here Josh we've got a I call it a mostly cloudy night as it has been here not not hazy and Smoky like other places in New England it's it's been pretty good here for the last day day and a half couple days ago I think the smoke was pretty bad but we've got a not a drop of wind either which is nice for the players it'll keep it from getting away from a little bit yeah absolutely they don't see anybody out there in a long sleeve shirt underneath apart from you know the fans I know when you look at this from lcat you're looking across and you see seeing no fans that's because all of the fans for both sides are on this side of the stadium sitting underneath we've got a relatively it wouldn't say it a packed house but a relatively packed house getting a little a view there of the eager crowd to get started yeah people still coming in in this round of the state tournament you pay uh admission so there's a little bit of a line a little bit of a delay over there and uh we're good and here here we are Jeff Morneau here along with Josh Weiss hi everybody happy to be here on this great night looks like they're still confirming this and yeah trainer out there Diane she's ready to go and event that anything happens she's been a trainer for Eastlawn Meadow games like this for a quite a long time yeah La Crosse in 2023 different than 20 years ago yeah the rules huh yeah absolutely they're just checking on it and you can't blame the officials for checking on it and making sure that they get it right before the game starts yeah I'm sure you wouldn't want the situation where something comes up after and they don't they didn't get it right they would be you know they would be in I wouldn't say they'd be in trouble but they they would have to they'd have a lot of questions to answer so yeah I can appreciate you know what they're what they're doing foreign you know we can talk a little bit about a little bit about you know Holliston and their season right they've had uh they've had a great season played a bunch of teams from division one and from division two they had a a bit of a barn burner in the first round you know a quasi-up set it wasn't you know it's not like a huge upset it was a 13 I think versus a 20.

what you just did can you translate it yes what's the subject matter okay the songs you mean or okay the first song was for Bigfoot and there is a story of Bigfoot lives in the mountains in the Navajo it's the correct way to say Navajo they gave me this he says there is this this thing that comes very hairy and I feed him he does not hurt me what's he talking about so that song talks about Bigfoot how he hides in the mountains and he's afraid of of sub-humans okay the second was the yahi Yoho it's the tribes of California and it talks about the water it talks about the stars because we are the star people if you look into the Tango or gabilino or quiche or um uh Shoshone they have songs of the Dolphins in Huntington Beach Newport Beach all the way to Seal Beach Newport Beach Laguna Beach and how we're related to the Dolphins and a lot of that has a lot of meaning to us and out of respect that's what they taught me because I am a sheikah I'm a native from Oaxaca I want him when he speaks Jeremy to talk more about that okay thank you yes thank you next is Jeremy Gonzalez my name is Jeremy Gonzalez um I'm the great great grandson of Jenny Acuna she's the last living matriarch of our tribe I run a non-profit organization in Los Angeles that helps the homeless I work with uh the mayor of Glendora councilman and Santa Monica on a number of issues regarding my tribe and the homelessness issue um one thing that I'm here for is the name the colonist uh that's hurtful to me you know right now I'm fighting a mural in in Santa Monica they covered it two years ago it depicts my ancestors kneeling down on our knees looking up to Spanish soldiers and father Sarah my ancestors were displaced this land was stolen from us I can trace my ancestry back to the Spanish missions over 5 000 years ago where we were enslaved we have the genealogy there's a lot of people that come in here and claim to be thongva claimed to be Gabrielino I'm sure you guys have heard it but have they showed you something that solidifies that their paperwork from the Bureau of Indian Affairs that recognizes them as Gabrielino or tongva I have that proof I also have the proof of my mother's death certificate that says she is Gabrielino and Shoshone my cousin Nick Rocha is the chairman and the chief of the Gabrielino Shoshone and he just sat down in New York at the United Nations they wanted to hear our voice and I think these board members you should hear my voice my kids go to school here in Anaheim my son Jaden is a football player at Katella High School my daughter Liesel is on her eighth grade trip right now in New York from South Junior High and uh every month I had to save and I had to put away money so she can go on this trip and do without as a father I suffer from something called Crohn's disease that's why I'm so thin I've been dealing with crohn's disease since I was 35 years old I also suffer with a rare genetic disease called AIP and I've had a service animal for the last 11 years because of these conditions when I go into Cedar Sinai my animal comes with me everywhere I go out of respect for this meeting I didn't bring my service dogs in here because I didn't know what the crowd would be so I wanted to be respectful and I didn't know what the space would be but with that being said I'm never going to stop fighting for my ancestry it's not about me it's about my children it's about Jaden it's about Liesel it's about the Seven Generations that are coming we always talk about this as indigenous people because we've lost everything and in my language I would call him NEPA NEPA that means brother just like my dog Washi that that means dog in my language there's a lot of words from our language that are lost I'm one of the few people that I've written out over 800 words in our dialect and I work with Chicano Educators to teach these things and I know when we talk about ethnic studies and different things in these type of settings it gets testy you know we just seen what happened in the valley when people were talking about rights of people that may be gay or trans you know and have children attending these schools these are all things that everybody has different views and opinions on but one thing is that we're all people and like sitting in this circle here our people believe in a circle of life and we believe in equality and that's all we want I just want to be recognized and I want to be respected I don't care what you change the name to but colonizer is not a good name Jaguar is a great name you know you can come up with a a name that may be respects the people in this area that were indigenous you know besides the Gabrielino there are plenty of people that came here from Mexico from Central America there are plenty of people that reside in this area that are indigenous that work live in their kids go to school and they participate and they pay taxes so just respect us you know we do have a voice even though there's only two percent of us left I'm still here and I'm working with the Anthropologist named Dr Gary stickle you can Google him we work very closely to monitor these things to make sure the narrative is going to be in our favor thank you for listening to me I know I've taken my time thank you so much for respecting me I appreciate you next speaker is Art Castile good evenings my name is Art Castile third generation Anaheim and I got a great uncle and a grandmother right there buried at the Holy Cross Cemetery and we go we're sixth generation now here in Orange County and um came from these schools went to Betsy Ross and went to ball and went to lawera and uh but I'll go back to the Betsy Ross time in sixth grade our teacher was reading a paperback book of uh How the West Was Won and he said opened up to chapter five and we did and we're all sitting on our on the floor and he's on the podium just like this and um as we were looking at the picture it had a horse with this mouth really angry looking and a soldier looked about 21 with the sword and reaching out and then they had a little boy about 16 year old uh Indian boy moccasins running with his facial expression of fear and our teacher started crying we I didn't really get it while he was crying but we were all looking at him like what's going on he shut the book and he couldn't finish it so it was something that kind of resonated with me that what we were just young kids being that we went to Betsy Ross and then we a lot of people went to Fremont and then went to Anaheim so I'm going to give you some history about how those who didn't know that those were called the Mexican schools to us and back in the days we know the history of Pearson Park we used to go swimming and it was called uh you know when we went there we ended up swimming on a Tuesday and when they had to drain the pool you know it's just to clean the water because the other people didn't want to be in the same water as us and when we used to go to if anybody remembers the Fox Theater I don't know if anybody lived here that long time but it was on Lincoln it was a fox theater and it said Mexicans upstairs and we had to go upstairs as kids and so these are the things that we kind of went through and I had fellow students at ball would say we bought this from you and I go about what we bought this from you and I go we bought California from you and I said well don't matter and uh but we were subject to being and that discrimination of of of Mexican Hispanic would you want to call us and they would say you guys are in gangs and I'd go well you guys are my gang German Irish and and Jewish all together and when we saw the Holocaust back in that time they showed us the video in junior high uh my Jewish friends and my German friends actually departed for a moment there just to see the separation of the Holocaust it really made and some of the Italians were being discriminated and Irish they were uh so many different discriminations and and different cultures but you know we kind of still as young kids we weren't brought you know we're not born that way but we ended up getting to understand each other and we became good friends and the it took a long time but in the 70s late in the mid 70s the Hispanic people came from Mexico and I noticed our boards and our school didn't really uh like that at all because they didn't speak English and I didn't speak Spanish or understand it and um so I was like I had to go home and tell my Dad what's a Mexican and he says you're Mexican too and I go wow I mean why because everybody's really not liking what they're seeing so then they were put into these apartment complexes and so I worked for the city at 13 got a work permit and I was working and so part of that I got to see how the community changed in culture to sectoral areas and that's when things started happening with crime got bigger and So based on that was um I was in there trying to help the kids I was out there helping families and uh I used to come here and actually advocate for some kids that were being expelled and the board would actually uh at certain high schools and Junior highs would uh because I was coming there for their defense giving them example why do we want to put a kid out in the street and not give them an education and they decided to keep them and those kids graduated have families serving our country so I used to hear all of them but expels thems every night like I used to come here for like almost 25 years I gave my dedication to both the school board the city school board and the school board and some of you probably remember back in the days that we were here under circumstances of things that were happening at um inappropriate things at high school levels and we fought for to get the things straightened out so again just letting you know that I haven't been here in a long time and uh but you know we have a some board members here probably that you probably don't know or know about these things I just wanted to kind of give you that as a heads up of you know I hope I haven't like I said I don't know you guys so just coming here to give a little tidbit of a history thank you very much art I'd like to ask you when you were at Betsy Ross and the teacher was reading you that story and was so emotional do you know what grade you were in at that time sixth grade you were sixth grade and you're on the floor fifth grader fifth graders and sixth graders sat in the auditorium remember it was a big Auditorium but you weren't sitting on the floor you were in a chair I thought we were on the floor sitting powwow style okay yeah and I think what he did is he was looking at a lot of kind of a longer hair we had darker skin and I think that really got to him and uh until I got that I understood what he was uh later on in my life I said oh he was looking at us we were the original very long time here so that was something that history was kind of given to us through a different paperback book and uh but thank you very much and good evening I just want to thank you I think these kind of stories are really helpful right right thank you for being here tonight I think we need that and um again I'm glad I hope this all um I can get back to going what I used to do there were 10 years differences here where I'm 10 years older than Jerry yeah there you go thank you very much guys thank you thank you thank you one and all okay thank you you too next is uh presentations 6.1 local control and accountability plan normally called the lcap and annual update California school dashboard and local indicators Dr Fried take it away thank you so much Paulina just to make sure I'm hitting the return button to go forward all right just making sure all right well thank you board president O'Neill good evening members of our board uh superintendent on Cedar cabinet of course members uh families friends colleagues staff here and watching online tonight uh gives me a great pleasure to be here tonight to share the great work that we've done with our dashboard specifically our local indicators and our local control accountability plans so tonight we're going to be going over a little bit more in depth about the process we went through the one thing I'd ask uh before we begin just like we've always done because it is a lengthier presentation than what we normally do uh that we if we can hold questions till the end but of course there's something that comes up that you want to ask by all means go ahead and do so but if we can't hold them to the end that'll be a little easier we do have our Ed staff our business and our HR folks in the room so we can answer whatever questions that you might have at the end as well all right and I am honored just you know to be presenting tonight with both Mrs Amanda Bean our director of career preparedness systems framework and Dr Roxanna Hernandez who is our coordinator of learning development we're going to share in this presentation tonight so real quickly the purpose of this presentation as the board may recall this is a requirement of the California Department of Education that we really report on the progress of our local indicators at a board meeting we're doing that tonight and you'll learn later that this process that we go through with the local indicators also feeds and impacts the work that we do with our local control accountability plan we are required to go through a reflective process the state gives us reflective tools that we utilize to go through and assess where we are in along along the Continuum of implementing our local indicators the nice thing is there's not a metric connected to it so we don't have to meet a certain score or whatnot it's just really showing that our Lea our local Education Agency is going through a reflective process to progress monitor where we are on the Continuum and how we're continuing to make strides to grow our practices and as you may all recall our accountability system in California has changed over the last several years we used to have a single score that our schools in our district was judged upon now we have more than just a single number we have a series of measures that allow us to really better gauge how we're doing as an agency it's really focused on continuous Improvement so it's not necessarily stagnant like a single score might reflect it's really monitoring also our growth as an agency in our along our schools we love that it does focus on the equity of all student groups and it's again integral to the lcap development and our local decision making decision making and as you'll learn a little bit later we have our state priorities the local indicators in this process also allows us to go deeper with those State priorities good evening so I'm going to share with you a little bit about the dashboard and the different indicators that's on lend two um to the progress of auhsd so the dashboard is a tool that displays the performance of school districts schools and student groups and it includes a set of State data and local measures that assist in identifying our strengths and our areas that are in need of improvement the six State indicators are based on data that is commonly reported from all districts across the state and it includes measures such as academic for performance which is The s-back Chronic absenteeism English learner progress graduation rate suspension rates and the College and Career indicator which includes things such as a through G completion CT pathway completion Coby literacy and so on the local indicators that we're going to talk about tonight are based on data collected at the local level and so while we're going to focus on the local indicators I do just want to share with you very quickly an overview of the entire dashboard and the calculations so in Prior years the calculations were based on the the growth between or the growth or decline over two years of performance and we would be used to seeing the colors the blue the green the yellow the red and the orange however because of covid and some of the challenges associated with reporting and student engagement and so on the state has modified the reporting over the last couple of years and so for this year for 20 to 22 we're only we're for last school year 2022 we were only reporting this current school year the current year of data and so you saw that reported in five measurements from very low to very high one thing to note that the status levels are reversed for chronic absenteeism and suspension rate uh in comparison to the other measures so the goal is to have a low rate of student absence and suspension whereas we would want to see a high rate of performance in the other measures when we're looking at our dashboard the results are represented for our entire district for each individual school and also for the defined student groups such as racial and ethnic groups low-income English Learners homeless Foster Youth and students with disabilities for the Europe 2022 the College and Career Readiness indicator or the measure was not reported but will resume for this year in 2023.

they pulled it out right in a one goal game so I'm sure they're excited to be here they're probably looking to expand upon their most recent Victory and uh keep the ball rolling in the right direction for them and pull off another uh you know this would be a this would be a decent size upset for them to take out East Longmeadow on their home turf today I think so and it sounds like um they came back as well they were down a few goals with a couple minutes left and they were able to pull it out so that's you know obviously Sports is very much about momentum and you want to build on that and if you start to believe in yourself then that can take you a long way right yeah I mean it can certainly boost their confidence they've played Holliston has played a lot of really good good division one teams and when they did that you know they lost and they got beat up but that just I think that just makes you better throughout the year and it makes you prepared for the state tournament in division two you know when you're playing you know the better teams or top seeded teams it's not like they haven't seen this type of talent before right this type of speed this type of stick skills these types of goalies so yeah and I definitely think it helped East Longmeadow to play Chelmsford and Lexington this year in eastern Mass and and those were great games great wins for the girls uh and and this you know different level of competition that definitely helped them to gel and get better as the season was going on absolutely it does look now like we are going to get things started I don't see coach Moses protesting in any major way so that tells me that um not that she got her way but that her interpretation of the rule with regard to the draw stick ended up being correct and we're about to get this game started and I'm not unsurprised by that at all no no no she knows your stuff now she makes sure that she has the rules going it's 608 25 minutes in the first half and the ball is dropped and draw control one right away by Ali Thompson and here she comes over to switch or stick Kenna Marino has the ball she flips it down to the left-hand side to East longmeadow's top goal scorer uh actually that was not it was Anna macarini Bridget Jordan senior tough pass there but it's flicked out of bounds by Holliston so it's going to remain East Longmeadow ball yeah I tried to force that one just a bit Yeah tough pass right there really wasn't open um there it is great pass oh picked up picked up kind of picked up now Holliston has it tough pass right there good ride here by Kenna Marino East Longmeadow setting it up great anticipation right there by Talia Weiss but she just missed it by a millimeter I mean really good anticipation and play right there East Longmeadow is pressing hard that's for sure yeah they're resetting here on the ride number two Anna macarini going up and challenging balls on the ground here it's getting chased and it's getting pushed along it's out of bounds great ride there by East Longmeadow causes the turnover here picked up by Allie Thompson back to the goalie almost looked like a shot you heard one person in the stands Go whoo like what was that but I think it was fine it was a little behind the goal and nobody around maybe a little early Jitters here yeah here comes Thompson she's not even being challenged here at Holliston ride so that's you know that's that's kind of a telling sign that Holliston is really just going to set up set up it's set up its defense yep looks like they're playing a little bit of a zone no good pass good pass there to trulio she just needed to take maybe another half second or so she was open great catch great pass take a second and then you know turn and fire but in any event he saw Meadows back on its ride again Kenna Marino really putting really applying some pressure here on the ride hammers away at it very nicely done picked up goes out of bounds that's going to be East Longmeadow ball no looks like a little surprised by that not sure what happened there looks like uh some pressure here is going to help East Longmeadow yeah defense looks a little uncertain well it looks yeah they're just gonna try to give it to a Speedster and this is she's gonna get [Music] come on Bridget up close Bridget right there almost had it number 24 picks it up eventually and is now running through the middle Hollister Walker has quite a bit uh you know when watching her last time she's there sort of their go-to player to bring the ball up yeah East Longmeadow in its defense Holliston with its first possession they're really going to move the ball around here it looks like you're going to take their time I would imagine giving you know they won 12 to 11 in the first round that idea of being patient and using clock is going to be important for them against the high-powered offense like East Longmeadow oh and that's way out that one just yeah just a little bit of a tough release there went a little bit long looks like East Longmeadow ball yeah she's gonna bring it in yeah Ava Lombardi and Martha Walker clearly seem to be the two strongest players for Palestine and then we got the Speedster Kenna Marino coming up passes it up to more now looks like she's going to take advantage here she gets it right in the middle there and it's all off the post tough opportunity this is good this could be a problem here on the on this one here but what a great ride here by Bridget Jordan and morno picking up oh almost good try there good ride slowed it down gave islametto an opportunity to go back and set up its offense but good job by Holliston getting through the ride and into the offensive zone [Music] all over there you go can I kind of picks it up and yeah I mean this is I just keep here we go it's going here we got it over to Bridget Jordan she's going it's even [Music] there it is and it's put in yeah that transition game looks like it's going to be something that holliston's gonna have to figure out here because as long as Meadows getting some very good shots um and and you know they're not getting back as quickly as these as as our girls are moving things along yeah I mean so far east longmeadows had three really good shots you haven't seen you know two offensive possessions so far by Holliston they really haven't gotten off a good shot one turn you know basically two turnovers at the end of the day uh just being forced by the intimidating defensive pressure uh on the sticks of the uh of the Holliston Panthers and on that last possession they really collapsed out on on Walker so she just couldn't get a shot off so let's see what we got here with the draw [Music] Well Done by Hollister Meadow picks it up number 19 has it that's that's it no that's okay oh very nice save by Jenna Hawley and then she gets it out right away which is great and this is the transition piece if they well testing all very tenacious gets rid of it quickly yeah good play there just gets it up to Bridget Jordan Bridget's got it she's this looks like the exact same play we had about a minute ago this yeah good play right there was the same play she was going to get it back over to you know one of our top goal scorers actually the top goal scorer for islametto Addie Jordan but Bridget's got it she's a senior here she's her assist this year have been phenomenal she's yeah this one's kind of interesting this is actually set up for a pass to Megan morno but it looks like she drove it in herself that was good very nicely done she used uh you know I think she took the goalie a little bit and bounced it a little earlier than the goalie thought yeah that's a really good shot there by Bridget Jordan not didn't have a great angle wasn't on a great hash but she got that one right into the corner and past the Holliston goalie to put East Longmeadow up 2-0 with 1922 remaining in the first half um you know it's interesting on that either that we usually see girls collapsing in a lot quicker it was almost as if they were sort of slow to get in there and I don't know maybe it looked like that to me I guess I'm so used to seeing so many other girls just going right in and cutting down the angle yeah they kind of ran with her almost on some level here we go it's flipped up again Ally Thompson almost has it oh on his flick this one's gonna actually get over the line yeah so we'll see what happens here in terms of where this one's gonna go I think that's going to be eastbound metal ball um what's that call they're gonna do it again I think so I think they're unclear what to call there I guess we're gonna get a redraw I don't see that too much do you I haven't seen it before I'm I'm can't say I'm a a rules a rules official or know enough about it to call that a reed draw but maybe maybe that's yeah man assuming it's the right caller you probably would hear the coaches saying something as well yeah so flips it up and there it is that one's to Ali Thompson and then you're gonna then the ride's just gonna be it's just gonna be a Sprint here by Mourinho Mourinho de morno morno is going to try to really get oh just she she tried to there was a stick in the way she was looking for that one she's got it now though and she hits the post again oh that wasn't in no that hit the post again you could hear it up here you know it looked like it was going to go in but it didn't and now the ball's on the ground again great play there great ground ball control there by Bridget Jordan Bridget Jordan to Thompson she's covered she flips it over back to looks like macarini macaroni's getting like double or triple team she's out to more now more now had that I'm not sure how that wasn't a shooting space but it wasn't let's try Diana macarini there and kind of knock the ball free yeah I think morno needed to like just she just put her stick up for a shot on that one it probably would have been up probably would have been a free position shot but here we go again on the ride right I mean this one's out of the box it's picked up it's being batted around and and it gets picked up by marino marino to Bridget Jordan Bridget Jordan on the doorstep but it gets saved oh there it is picked up safe picked up save Jordan stayed with it her tenacity senior Captain tenacity was able to pick that one off the ground and put it in what'd you think of that Josh that was great persistence you know one two three stayed with it a lot of times it's easy to sort of Let It Go and think that the play is over but she didn't you know that that absolutely didn't happen there and a great feed was that from Megan Morna I'm not sure at the end of the day I can't remember I think it was more now to Jordan but then it kind of flipped around it was saved it was picked up at the end of the day that was really just a lot of individual effort at the end there by Bridget Jordan I do think we're seeing that notion of East longmeadow's quickness and their speed that's creating all kinds of problems for Hollister especially on defense right we're there [Music] um you know they're getting back but but the cuts and everything are wide open good recovery from defense there they were looking a little bit uh vulnerable at the moment yeah it looks like they're really just gonna I mean anytime twenty nice pass good save by Holly great save right on the doorstep too it was saved I had a girl wide open in the middle there oh good defense there again somebody got a stick on a stick there to knock it out very good hassle but Hustle by test and all there to to get the possession as well yeah goalie Jenna Hawley has it but she's gonna need a little bit of help here if she gets it she gets it from Denault Denault Speedy she moves it up it's right here to Addie Jordan Addie Jordan's gonna fly through the middle yeah Brigid there it's going to come over to Megan Megan's going to come right through she's gonna pass it to Mac macarini there it is great fake by Megan uh you know get the defender thinking a shot's coming and and a time out by Holliston I believe yeah good play right there but I you know I I think again it's you know for now four nothing we've got nine minutes gone almost in the game eight and a half minutes and I think Josh you know you think you called it early and I think you've called it often is that the speed and the transition game here has really um been to the advantage of the East Longmeadow Spartans and they've taken advantage of most of their opportunities in that tradition game yeah I think so and and you know it's interesting it really seems like where the separation is happening is in the middle of the field right where they're getting they're getting the breakout and and they are blowing past their midfielders and so they're having no chance to set up on defense um and and it's just leading to good shot after good shot yeah so you know it's an interesting question about what do you do if you're Hollis in here and how do you try to counteract some of this uh because you're not they're you know it's interesting they're getting some penetration offensively but they're not really getting great shots I mean Jenna's General Holly's had some good saves but but they're you know when you think about how do you make an adjustment here uh because it's whatever they're doing isn't working very well for them yeah I think of it seems to me like on the offensive end holliston's been mildly successful I mean they've had some good shots that have been saved they've had they've definitely had some turnovers for sure yeah um but the the game is being won and lost you're right at this point in in the mid in the Midfield um and in that transition game and there's they just don't seem to have an answer yet on defense um I think they've got to find a way once the ball is saved or there is a turnover they need to slow down that transition game you know one way fortunately or unfortunately I think that they need to do that is they need to start following Whoever has the ball or following off ball all or even just just to slow it down and even the ref Blows the Whistle it slows things down it's going to give islametto a chance to set back up yeah um but that I mean that's one way to do it another is just to be better on defense but I think it's a speed issue yeah well and you get and the interesting thing is you get behind right and so the tendency is to say defensively we're struggling should we drop people back but you're behind by four goals because that's not really gonna work either right yeah I think you know I think a really experienced coach over there for Hollis and he's going to pull the pull his team together which he did before things you know spiraled out of control pulled them together gave them a little pep talk and I'm sure come up with they've come up with some type of plan as a coaching staff as to what they're going to do you can see the Holliston Defenders are huddling up here so you know the coaches come up with something we'll see we'll see if it works um you know and to your point about the fouls I think in unlike other sports I think in La Crosse there are some good fouls where it makes sense to take them to give you an opportunity to set up right whereas it's not so clear-cut in other other sports like that no absolutely you know you follow in basketball and somebody's going to the free-throw line it's not like you commit a foul in the Midfield and someone's going up to the eight meter to get a shot so it's just really you know it's going to slow them down and if it's not a penalty where you're going to get a delay a game or a red card it's um you know it's incredibly effective and this has been you know the draw control so far has also been very effective Ali Thompson has done just a spectacular job so far you know she hasn't won them all but even the one she's lost oh great feeling oh really good position and we got ourselves a Twizzler behind the back Twizzler they were playing Addie Jordan for sure for her right hand she's got a patented right-handed shot she's hammered a couple goals home and hit two posts and she turns to the left and sweeps one in there with a sweeper beautifully done I mean I don't even think the goalie was prepared or even saw it coming no that one's definitely gonna go that one's definitely going to be added to the highlight reel for the summer recruiting video I can already see that coming you know parents on the sideline were cheering the fan crawl All Amazed by it just a great shot incredibly talented player and what was amazing about it was how quick you know it was catch and and go quick like without even thinking about it so oh all right here we go it was a there was there were they did I mean it was it was a small penalty but there was a penalty there on that they did kind of Slam there's a there's a good move right there by I'd like to see that by Kenna Marino with those dodging skills to use those skills she hasn't used them enough this year I think she's going to be using a more she's one of the best Dodgers on the team and one of the fastest players and yeah great save good shot got it low it's still on the ground goes in Bridget Jordan picks it up again shoots it back into the circle now you know the the other piece to this is East Longmeadow is getting every they are out hustling Holliston for every ball I can remember at least four or five where they've oh that one just slipped out it was a shot it slipped out of the stick nice nice job back to morno back to Moreno and then a home run slam into the back left corner of the net by Kenna Marino de Merino beautifully done and you know they look like a pretty well-oiled machine right now clicking on all cylinders so obviously in a tournament like this when you're one and done you keep the foot on the gas and you keep going uh but but you know it just looks like hollison doesn't have a whole lot of answers it's obviously quite early but you know they've got to have to make some kind of dramatic shift here otherwise you're seeing a little switch up here on the draw control morno coming into the center circle moving Ally Thompson back to the defensive end moving Addie Jordan now on the circle still with Kenna Marino looks like Mourinho is calling this one out to Addie Jordan we'll see what happens here it goes forward it's flipped looks like it's going to make it it's picked up by Jordan what a great pickup there by Bridget Jordan here's morno she's moving she's moving she's still moving oh beautiful underhanded laser wow that was like a one two three really good play there by Bridget Jordan not to not come over the line just reach your stick over to get it if the foot crossed the line there by Bridget Jordan when the draw control goes that far it would have been a penalty right and so Bridget did a great job used her her length and her reach and was able to pick it up moved it in got it to morno she did a one two three Dodge underhanded shot and put it in the back of the net East Longmeadow takes the lead 7-0 with 10 minutes gone 15 minutes remaining so far Josh what do you think I I mean right now it looks like East Longmeadow is pretty much doing whatever they want and there's an interesting question of you know for Holliston about I mean you have to find a way to break the momentum here and it's pretty unclear from what I'm watching what that looks like I also think to bridge you know we were talking about Bridget she also used her body a little bit there to kind of keep the defender a bit at Bay you know sort of kept herself between the ball um so clever Play All Around again morno on the draw control Addie Jordan on the circle a little early start morno's just going to take this get it into the Zone she's moving she's grooving she's looking she's got her there's Addie Jordan she's gonna fire shooting space number 27 in shooting space Addie Jordan gonna get an eight meter not sure how many goals she has so far but it's probably a hat trick already she could be going up going in for her fourth she gets it to morno oh that was fired and wide uh looks like he's smelling that out keeps possession at a macarini with a smart play behind the net ow yeah sneaks in and and in for an easy goal yeah there's nothing that goalie can do on that you're you're literally standing right in front of her really just a great move by trulio as well to kind of move the defender out to carry with her macarini sneaks behind and then it was basically one-on-one with the goalie which is you know maybe a 20 chance at best for uh for the goalie great play there by macarini this reminds me a little bit of uh when the patriots who are playing the Jets and the rookie quarterback and he said he was seeing ghosts I have a feeling Holliston might be seeing ghost right now yeah I mean I think I think the only thing that saved the ball from going in the back of the net so far is the post so that's true this is an absolutely dominant start by East Longmeadow so we'll see if they can keep it up but at the moment it looks as if all signs are suggesting they can but you know again a lot of Lacrosse to play here 14 14-14 left in the first half well housed in getting getting an offensive opportunity here with 14 minutes remaining at least we'll see what they see what they can do [Music] I don't think there's any question that psychologically they need a goal pretty soon otherwise you know it just becomes a something where you're really defeated uh and it's just frustrating and that's some solid defense from Megan Morneau right there just staying with the player not you know she had a spin move on her uh and you know she was temporarily beaten but stayed with it and oh and very nicely done there an opportunity here for Halloween yeah there's the opportunity there's their best player on the field in a you know a one-on-one situation she's going to take that opportunity every single time and a really good shot [Music] nicely done and they needed that I mean they had you know they really had to slow this down a little bit on some level an interesting time out here I think yeah from Katie Moses coach Moses yeah he's gonna pull things together I'm a fan of timeouts especially you know I think when you've got younger teams there's no point in leaving them on the sidelines you know I think it's important to to slow it down a little bit when things aren't going well or even when you get something like this you're up 8-1 you've been dominant you don't want to let up uh and I think it's a good idea to sort of say to them hey okay like we're playing well let's keep playing the way we're playing and you know and and make sure that they're not getting overconfident as well as you know hey let's not give them you know so it kind of changes the momentum a little bit right yeah just gonna re refocus them you know not that they you know doesn't look like it was a re a complete refocus is necessary but just kind of remind them that you know this team came back last time let's not get ahead of ourselves here and make you know I wouldn't say that was a silly error I mean the ball slipped out of her stick but still that happens when that slips out of the stick one player from the other side shouldn't be able to you know come all the way on down the field and I'm sure that's what coach Moses and Coach Mazza are just talking about let's not let up here let's you know chase people down let's back check let's you know continue the same type of pressure that we've had for the first you know 16 whatever it is 12 and a half minutes of this game so yeah I think that's right fans Not restless but they're lined up along the fences they're lined up in the uh in the stands got parents here parents here uh grandparents we got brothers and sisters who are home from college watching their siblings play they really didn't get a chance to do that all year I see some East Longmeadow lacrosse alumni here it's really uh it's a good night to be here watching a game and supporting supporting their kids yeah and and you know um festive atmosphere it's not quite um it's it's uh it's not quite a typical June evening it's a little chilly but uh but it's a great night for field for field like for lacrosse obviously and you know low 60s is terrific you're not getting overheated and and Etc so absolutely absolutely you know you do see a couple people bundled up I mean especially from Holliston you still see I mean it's June it's June right we're still seeing it's not too late we're still seeing uh you know blankets out we got people with hoodies on up there because it's still a little bit cold winter jet winter jackets I mean I see my father-in-law down there he looks like he's bundled up going you know came in from Alaska I mean he lives in Florida most of the year but um he's from Madison Connecticut I mean he should be used to this New England weather but um body getting acclimated to the colder nights than what otherwise used to and that was a nice little run for Walker again you know she clearly is is there uh you know their go-to player to get the ball through Midfield and um and to get them set up um so they're gonna you know he's talking about is gonna have to watch that and and stay you know stay on her have maybe even have somebody shadowing her yeah and this this number 17 too she's got a very good left hand so you got to be very careful of that she's got a really good left-handed shot you can tell just by the way that she's holding the stick there Ava Ava Lombardi so it looks to me like they're gonna there's a almost could if they could have got a skip pass in there another another pass to 24.

of lifting up our black and African-American African ancestry students is a testament to the true belief in our um in that and that we need to live it out every day um so I'm very um I'm just proud to see that this that Alan Rock has been a leader in this for a long time and we need to continue to persist and work and lift um not just all of our students of color but specifically we need to be especially as a as a white um Latina I need to speak out and be sure that we are lifting up our black African ancestry and African American students and be very very explicit um that they are not on if you want to go home now thank you okay 14 minutes please thank you foreign okay so we move on to uh IM 3.06 Pull It Forward okay very good very good there we go so we move on to item 3.06 recognition of members of the racial Equity committee uh Joseph uh Danny Sanchez Michael Tay Kimberly Ivy Kenneth Williams Crystal Weber Catalina Rodriguez Dr Amy Amazon Dr Anya Ortigas Miss Veronica Talton and Miss history Basu um I was wondering excuse me for president if we had the members of the committee to please come forward the work that you have done in Alum Rock is truly trailblazing and I want to acknowledge and so that the audience can see you all who has met in in the leader there's um Miss Basu excuse herself because she was involved in an accident this morning she's fine but she's shaken up as you can imagine she had her accident and went back to came back to school you know but I I told her you need to go home uh Miss Dalton would you do us the the favor of explaining to the audience what this important committee is all about absolutely thank you Dr Bauer um those who are with me this evening are part of the racial Equity committee which the district formed in 2020 it was after uh the murder of George Floyd that myself and some area leaders uh requested a black lives matter in school resolution with the passing of that resolution we also ask that there be a racial Justice task force and that area would serve as part of that I was fortunate to be chosen as one of the co-leads for that committee and I served alongside Anna Nguyen who was principal at that time of Renaissance at Madison she passed on passed on to a different District she went on to a different district and I also um worked with her story Basu who is the principal at Lindale Elementary School the members of the committee who were on the agenda that I would like to recognize are Joseph manluca and Alum Rock administrator Danny Sanchez a community-based Organization leader Michael Tay who is an Alum Rock educator Kimberly Ivy Alum Rock educator Kenneth Williams Alum Rock parents Crystal River Alum Rock parents Catalina Rodriguez Community member Dr Aimee Amazon of Alum Rock committee liaison and Dr Anya artillis Alum Rock committee liaison our district chose this committee to work with the three-year implementation plan we were to measure and manage the following observation and Analysis of the Panorama survey which looks at sense of belonging the culture and climate in our schools and communities and we also managed any um accusations or allegations of racial Justice incidents we are pleased to have served the community served in our schools and this work will conclude as of June 9th tomorrow right June 9th yes so we wanted the members who served and gave them their time to be acknowledged today those who could be a part and those who are watching on zoom and again I'm very pleased to have been chosen on behalf of area to lead this committee uh the racial Equity committee first ever for Alum Rock and we are pleased that you would acknowledge our hard work thank you so much okay superintendent Bauer yes so before this the committee sits down I just want when Miss Dalton is talking about the end of the committee is the end of the committee but not the end of the work I think that the what I wanted to thank the committee is that your contribution has been historical in the development of a uh multiple initiatives in Alum Rock one it is interwoven the values the ideas the goals of the committee are interwoven into our strategic plan so you're going to see when we talk about the goals overall goals you're going to see a lot of the committee work around that Miss Dalton also talked about using the Panorama survey very um deliberate in around the sense of belonging because surveys can be used in many different ways and they show many kinds of different data and people can truly manipulate the data as whatever the the goal is but because of the work of the committee they have taught us as a district to be very specific about looking for specific Trends in our classrooms as a result of that we had the socio-emotional learning Department working with us trying to figure out as we came out of the pandemic looking for why are our students our staff uh in in that specifically parents I'm very uh grateful because usually the parent survey is very positive but the student survey and the staff survey has a lot to work and and we don't take that as something small I think this is a huge challenge that we as a district need to take on and need to put up the mirror right look at the mirror and say how are we going to really develop the kinds of classrooms where our students feel welcome where they feel safe where our staff feels appreciated and that they can work in a collaborative environment so thank you so much for the a great contribution that you have done to our district thank you for president all right thank you uh vice president thank you before you sit down I just want to thank you so much as a board member who uh championed the resolution um and push for this work I I just think back in such little time how much you've all done so I want to thank you Veronica for being there from the very get-go remember the first presentation you did to now and you know there's no accidents or coincidence as to why people come together Pastor Danny I know we've been a part of this community for many years and I know the work that you do Amazon I mean I can go on and on but um the fact that you're all gathered right there's no coincidence because I know what you represent I know the hard work that you do and I know that uh you not only represent yourselves but you represent all of our children and families in Alum Rock and I truly am honored to work and be here as just [Music] so thank you again and I look forward to continuing to support this work uh trust people or Shelton thank you um what a great group of people that I know in different ways and Crystal Weber um I I work with her at the city of San Jose um so um I am I am grateful that this started I'm very very delighted that it is in the Strategic plan and I'll be looking to see how we are dismantling institutional racism right that is what we need to be focused on um you know whether it's the classroom policies and practices and um I I was trying to go to the last racial Equity committee I think it was canceled but um so I'm sorry to have missed it but I look forward to being a part of um ensuring that we are again sort of laser focused on these things because I think this is this is our this is our job to ensure that our policies and practices in our classrooms and elsewhere um work to dismantle uh race racial Injustice but thank you so much for I mean really the 2020 2020 it's just been um so you know historic traumas the traumas of the last three years have only highlighted the work that needs to be done um but you have my commitment to keep that um going so thank you so much I'll wrap up I want to thank thank the racial Equity committee uh or uh your hard work all you have done uh you know it's a kind of like an uh it came down in a you know important time in history right you know events have ways of shaping us and uh you know why uh I think that your work has made us all in in many cases aware of uh uh our blind spots are you know things that I would say you know we needed to take a second look at me even the third law and you know and in fact sometimes a challenge my own uh uh perceptions of uh you know how how how we react in the classroom and how we deliver Educational Services and a special note and this tall no one works harder than you on this so I appreciate your your persistence uh you know and your tenacity and bringing this together and uh you know and we are all the Richer for this so thank you again so much for you know and all members of the committee for their work oh so with public comment uh public members who wish to address the board on matters not on the agenda request to address the board provides members of the board oh okay uh provides members of the public an opportunity to speak about any matter under the jurisdiction of the district but not on this agenda yet the subject you wish to discuss is already on this agenda please provide your comment when that item is called during the meeting those who wish to speak on a you know uh those who wish to speak on a topic within the jurisdiction of the board but not on this agenda however the board May refer to staff or follow up for any formal written requests that are brought before the board at this time there is a limit of two minutes for each speaker the board has the right to limit total public comment on any agenda item to no more than 20 minutes written members may be referred for a future meeting agenda my name is Martha Lopez I'm from aptitude smoke uh my my point is that they want to take away sixth seventh and eighth grade from the schools I'm here representing several parents who disagree with that um I would like to request if you could place this item in the next board meeting thank you gracias thank you thank you right thank you everyone my name is Veronica I'm a parent leader and I have two children here in ellenbrock I'm also with the blue heads almost Mayfair and I'm here also representing parents um because uh the need to have access via Zoom to be able to provide common public comment is essential I am coming out of work I haven't seen my children all day and um I was one of the parents that benefited from it so yes I'm advocating for myself but I know many other parents are going through the same thing um and not only that there's no Spanish translation anymore so it's such an important topic today that we're talking about El Cap and how all cap funds are going to be distributed parents are not even able to listen in on their language specifically Spanish they have to be present to receive that the agenda the El Cap is not in Spanish either translated um we did go over with some parents and try to translate it but that was not ready as well um I want to continue to collaborate on this please I asked you an employer too allow us to give public learning via zoom and as well as to provide translations via Zoom as essential as Community engagement that we you know moving both it's a privilege for many of us like myself to know the system language and be able to be here today so again I ask you that you over much in representation of parents um and that we continue to work this collabing and forward thank you good evening my name is Veronica Charlton I'm a performing arts teacher at Lindale Elementary School and at George middle tonight I want to bring up information about prop 28 for those who don't know it Champions art and music funding for schools and I just want to speak as an individual but I do believe that the other Visual and Performing Arts teachers would agree that prop 28 asked that 80 percent of funds are to be used to hire teachers schools can hire existing credential staff CTE credential holders teaching credential candidates or teaching artists for single subject credential holders like myself a lesser known morale is to do a specific supplementary authorization which requires that you only have 20 semester units in the content area that you're interested in no classes or exams are needed and the application goes directly to the commission on teacher credentialing also classified staff could be hired as arch teachers that will evapor consultants and they will be District employees who travel from class to class and teach while the credential teacher remains in the classroom we do have some of those examples in our district already if you already have a credential you could add a second Prudential which shows subject matter competency by taking a semester teaching methods course in the credentialed area we know that our credentials programs required and bachelor's degree and that there are a few scholarships for Arts teaching this is ongoing funding for the districts there are strict accountability measures for school districts but I'm standing tonight to ask that you would please work with the vapor coordinator which I believe is to be announced this evening and the rapper teachers to make sure that all of our students are served in art and music with this funding from the state thank you so much foreign [Music] School fund that made me actually want to come to Adelante or counterfeit money to buy items there at the end of this train station and I met her very much like this we're not High School this year because he didn't want to listen to the teachers we need teachers to be happy with you become my son's friend you will find him kind insightful and witty but if you're a teacher at Adelante asking him to answer in complete sentences you will find him independent inflexible and unwilling he will ignore what you ask and begin to daydream about space and time in fourth grade he was diagnosed by a doctor with three neurodivergent conditions but before that in third grade he would lift up his desk and bring it down when he would get an assignment he did not like so Monastery Gonzalez assembled all the fun alternative students to try so colorful stools around the classroom a bouncy ball a textured mat a comfy Corner cushion finally she searched the whole school and found the heaviest desk with the chair attached and solved the issue another time she found the most patient understanding girl and sat her next to my son to help in turn in his assignments when he was not interested enough to do it himself Master Gonzalez did this all without a 504 plan and at the same time she would tell him his mind was so creative he would grow up to do great things but patients and extra attention from other lante teachers is common when I expressed regret at my son's Behavior a different teacher and Meister Perez reassured me I have no problem with his behavior I would just like to know how to get him interested these hard-working teachers listen to their students they listen to us parents you need to listen to them then act so they can be confident that we value their hard work thank you good evening board members my name is Stephanie Ibanez from Adelante School I'm here because I have a few questions about one of the parent Squad message from the superintendent that was sent on April 14th regarding updates um to avalanche's leadership um the message says and I'm quoting we include two Adelante staff members and two parents in the interview process I'm closing quotations my questions are what are the wings of the parents and staff members who are included in the interview process how will these parents selected if parents were allowed to be present during the interview process why one other or all parents given the same opportunity to participate does that mean that parents will be allowed to be present during the interview process for a school principal because we don't have one yet on the same note we have substitute principles that help with the administrative everyday tasks and I am not discrediting their efforts however they're not present at the school long enough to ensure that required committees under Title 1 such as elac comply with the mandated number of meetings was the principal she took the initiative to meet with the parents and set a plan into motion to form and nominate committee members we were supposed to have at least three meetings per year so far we only had one most recently there was no leadership from the school with the planning of the promotions of the Kinder and the eighth grade this was entirely the parents running the show from Logistics to setting up to cleaning up it was all with hands we had one meeting set up by the um now vice principal one week prior to the promotion when we had already met two to three weeks prior to this um so but we launched we executed and we prevailed we need a principal that has a leadership Charisma and initiative has more specifically we need her back I am requesting the response in writing via Planet Square addressing the questions as I have as I'm sure other parents at our school have the same questions thank you very much if I read something on behalf of somebody else and then read my own bye Mr President oh okay yes yes you know okay I will treat that as two yes two messages thank you um I was asked by a parent who couldn't be here to read this I am Stacy King although I cannot be here I have another opportunity for my child I have something to share I like I have someone to share my message I'm not a parent of I am not only a parent of curriculum but also a coach at Atlantic previous PGA board member and Pat current site rather than avalante as this school year ends I would like to share my experience in the beginning of this school year with Miss continues always Clarity a plan transparency and Trust for our school she respected each individual and she listened to us she was always working hard and doing her she was fair and honest many we're excited to work with her and we're the prospect of knowing their time and effort would be valued after all we are all working working towards the same goal of blessing the lives of of all of our children in our community in her absence the school literally fell apart we had numerous substitute emissaries but no one no one clear person who could take responsibility there was no one trusted leader who could provide oversight to the other staff members I don't doubt or devalue the work in time to put forward by all the many subsidy administers we had but that's a recipe for chaos my name is Gutierrez back to lead our school when she did not know the answer to something she would find out and follow through a true leader is not one who knows or pretends to know everything but rather leads with humility passion and allowed for the whole school who loves for who he or she uh conserving and that is what Ms Gutierrez always did and will continue to do thank you for your time my name is and um I've had my children at Atlanta for nine years I've served as a 2000 for four years uh treasure and vice president I mean I'm a Treasurer and president site counsel 6 out of the eight years and have put a minimum of 400 volunteer hours they're here around 100 years like myself as a principal right clearly at the region on vehicles that our school we conclusion and follow through those group level between staff parents administrators we didn't all those away but we went towards Khan [Music] jobs instead of one job Miss Martinez Garcia are amazing leaders but if but I when I'm open asked I can't do half work that I'm supposed to do and they were you know they're in the situation as a result we got a lot of excuses um our administrators like communication incomplete communication lots of last minute firefighting but it only starts at the top I have the time you're constantly one meters the last time the worse [Music] what we did so dark I was working by yourself thank you very much appreciate your patience greetings I am Dr Joel Herrera and I'm a retired school superintendent um Gutierrez former principal at arbolante I have a role that most others do not as I am her mentor and in fact I was honored to help Mrs Gutierrez with her resume I learned a lot about her through this process and I came to a healthy and deep respect for her expertise and her passion for dual immersion programs I am deeply saddened by what Miss Gutierrez is experiencing I am deeply saddened by the impact of all the students and staff and the parents at Adelante I am deeply saddened by the extremely negative effects of the district's actions on the career of such a devoted dual immersion teacher and administrator I strongly believe that Mrs Gutierrez that Miss Gutierrez is a caring and competent School administrator and I not knows who value is doing the right thing always I reviewed her entire educational history as we work together on her resume and we had many deep discussions about her love and knowledge of dual immersion programs and how to recognize a high performing program including how to build one is an expert I also coordinated mock interviews which helped me know her even better with total confidence let me say that Miss Gutierrez is being treated unjustly the desperate cannot speak about it however Ms Gutierrez is allowed to speak about her situation and as her Mentor we have spoken many times from the very beginning of this situation I say again it is unjust for Miss Gutierrez to be removed from Adelante nor does she deserve any negative consequences she's a competent and caring administrator and she's an expert in dual immersion with all due respect and I do respect you I request the district to reconsider and to reinstate Musketeers to her position as Adelante principle I'm also a former 12-year HR administrator the time is always right to do what is right said Dr Martin Luther King and I asked the district to do what is right it kind of hard for me to be up here because I know some of you personally and I respect who came to my mother's home to give her condolences when my brother passed he was here and retired from this District his whole career here and she came by the house to give as we say in Spanish her must and you know best of it to my mother I appreciate that Dr Robert thank you and I have copies I have not finished my statement I'm sorry for going over time I'm gonna have a puppy for Dr Bauer and all the board members thank you some of you might know me already but for those who don't my name is [Music] communities of the inside in public he was brought to my attention that the independent studies program is going to be cut off from next at school here the information given to the parents is that the board of trust is decided to cut off the program and it's not going to be continue my question is what is going to happen with those skills in the independent studies program the kids that are being are there because they will abuse bully jump and traumatize and in the regular schools and they don't uh sorry I'm emotional and they have anxiety to convert to those schools because they don't feel safe to come back some of you already some of you are also telling parents is a lack of interest to continue the eye independent studies program how to get to that conclusion without asking parents if they want to continue the program this is an arbitrary decision done behind closed doors without input from the parents you do not continue with the independent storage program you are forcing parents to change the keys to another schools after the district like San Jose Unified for example um for so many years I've been work I've been working with the Alum Rock district and I hope we can have a positive outcome to this issue so I'm requesting to have this issue to bring back to bring to put it back on the agenda for next month thank you uh seeing no further public comment I will move to IM 3.04 strategic plan annual update thank you so board members um this is Aaron rice and he has been helping us putting together um the Strategic plan for the next it's ethanol and evolving we this is as part of the committee we heard that you know say in three years or five years or ten years it's a little bit artificial so it's it is the kinds of things that we're going to be focusing but at the same time as we move forward they're going to be retooled as we learn more um about our own District so Aaron thank you so much for joining us tonight thank you good evening everyone um and we had some slides I'm not sure if they're queued up at this time if not I'm happy to uh to just speak to them okay I'll I'll speak to them and and we can certainly make them them available uh thank you for making some time on the agenda today I know it's a busy meeting and really wanted to share just a little bit of an update on the Strategic plan the work that's been done since the board adopted the Strategic plan last June um provide a little bit of re-grounding reminder of some of the core components of of the Strategic plan so to provide a little bit of a refresher on on that process uh going back to uh late 2021 we did some Discovery work some interviews including interviews with uh trustees we did some uh listening to to existing groups stack dlac spark among others to gain perspectives on what was going really well in the district where there were opportunities or needs to uh to develop some plans in response to those needs uh following that work in early 2022 there was a formation of a core planning team with representation from uh district office and Leadership School administrators Teachers Community Partners uh parents and and more and this team came together for a series of meetings to really put together a strategic plan to to learn from the work of that initial Discovery effort initial interviews um and and build a plan based on what what we were hearing uh we also had opportunity on drafts coming out of that core planning team for feedback from the board as well as feedback from uh from some key District staff who had just knowledge of ongoing efforts and key content knowledge that we wanted to make sure to incorporate into the Strategic plan and then ultimately uh the plan was adopted by the board in June of 2022.

the dashboard also includes a set of the local indicators that are founded on the local control funding formula the lcff priorities and those priorities are are the ones that there is no state level data collected and so we those are the ones that we do our self-reflection on and those who include basic services and conditions and those would be things such as teacher assignments safe and clean buildings instructional materials for all students also it would include the implementation of State academic standards School climate parent and family engagement and access to a broad course of study to assess progress the district uses the provided self-reflection tools that is given to us by the State Board of Education and that's what we use to report our progress to the dashboard so when we enter our information into the dashboard the dashboard automatically calculates whether or not we met the the performance level if the District of a district does not meet the performance standards the dashboard will automatically assign a performance level of not met or sometimes not met for two or more years luckily that hasn't happened to us though so um and sometimes when or when entering a performance level of not met for two or more years that can also be a factor in identifying a district for differentiated assistance so I'm going to hand it back to Dr freed who's going to share with us about basic Services state standards and parent engagement thank you so our first indicator that we're going to go into is our basic services and as Amanda said this is uh making sure that our state Priority One that teachers are appropriately assigned students have access to curriculum aligned instructional materials in the campuses and our schools are safe clean and functional you can see the standard that as you all know we work closely with the Williams Act and we have visits that take place at school so that's part of the process we go through when we use our school accountability report card in the way that we assess and reflect on these areas I'm proud to say as you know we have this past year we had close to 1300 teachers when you look at the data for 2122 there were 19 Miss assignments and 14 Miss assignments by setting ELD reported and just as a reminder for the board when we talk about a Miss assignment these are teachers who may be the marching band teacher who's teaching a section of PE or it could be the teacher who has a section of a CTE class but doesn't have the CTE the Cal the Career Technical education credential so you often will see that in some of those elective courses and again 19 District wide is is really uh pretty impressive Mark when you look at the 14 Miss assignments by setting the ELD English language development reported those are teachers who maybe do not have their English learner authorization completed so HR Works closely with those teachers to go through the process to get their work completed and again given the number of teachers that we have and who are working with students who are in the El program it's a it's a pretty impressive Mark as well and this is traditional every time we present we usually have a handful of Miss assignments as a result of those examples I just shared in terms of access to curriculum aligned instruction materials 100 of our students how to access their own copies of the standards line materials whether it was textbooks the consumables or the materials that teachers have generated as a part of their course of study and then clean and functional school facilities all of our schools have met The Mark with the Williams visits there that we meet the good repair standard this isn't to say that we don't have facility needs of course we have needs on all of our campuses where things can be updated and improved but in terms of the bar that's been set for this review we have met the repair standards that have been set for us in terms of the second local and here that I want to focus on is the implementation of State Standards which is a state priority number two we annually measure our progress in putting these standards through a number of means we obviously use the reflective tool that they have given us but there's a lot of work that we do as a system to constantly gauge and progress monitor how we're doing with the way we approach instruction and the implementation of our standards one of the things that we're really proud of is the way that we show our areas of strength in this area we provide a ton of professional learning to our staff in the way that we approach teaching and learning and have really done a lot of work intentionally to align our standards with the Frameworks and the way that we create systems to support its implementation in our district as you may see when you look at this next slide these are images that I know you're well familiar with I'll start with the image on the right our career preparedness systems framework where you see those three circles this really beautifully connects our approach to teaching and learning this is connected also to our community schools approach but it really looks at this 21st century skills our five C's it's connected to the technical skills which is a cross between the traditional content standards or the state standards we just talked about but we've also expanded our technical skills where it looks at the hard skills that may come out of a pathway that's very specific to a pathway it could be our dual enrollment classes that we offer with our partners at Fullerton and Cypress College and it's also the Google certificates that we're proud being the first Public School District in the country to offer these experiences to our students during the school day so that makes up the Tactical Circle technical skills to circle on the framework and then the last least last but certainly not least is the youth voice and purpose this is where we've done a lot of intentional work around Civic engagement and really finding ways to elevate our students voice so they find their voice within their content but also find how they fit and the identity around who they are as they're learning their content in the different courses then you see the the older first best instruction placement mat which also connects to the work that we've done to approach our standards and of course you see a specific image that connects to the five C's this slide just really references the intentional work our district has done in creating systems of support for professional learning the way that we Implement our standards it's intentional that you see these different circles not in a vertical format you know that we believe very much in shared governance and flat governance so it's done intentionally through a through a horizontal lens where we work together in a flow back and forth and these aren't all of the systems that we have just to give you an example of some of the structures and teams that we have in place to really support our teachers in this case with professional learning when it comes to the implementation of our standards in terms of areas of growth as we do our reflection not only do we look at the assets and the things that we're proud of but we do have some areas of growth as it comes to the implementation of our state standards we've identified the need for our professional learning to be differentiated to meet the needs of individual teachers just like we would expect our teachers to differentiate their instruction to better meet the needs of their students based on their various levels of performance we as an ed Division and as a district also need to be looking at how we can support our teachers in that same regard how can we differentiate the way that we approach cpsf as an example so the teacher who may be further along has a support he or she may need versus the teacher who's struggling to understand what this might look like in a classroom so that differentiation is important and of course the next step for us we also want to continue to refine and grow our performance task assessments and the Capstone program I think all of you uh participated in our Capstone programs this year which was really the inaugural year of doing this district-wide and we are so proud and blessed with the admin the teachers the classified staff and just the the community's work in making the cap zones real on our campuses it's a tremendous opportunity really to have our students showcase the great work they're doing and the way that we Implement our standards but the way that it's been personalized and made relevant to them but like anything we have ways to grow and ways to go this was our first year so we're going to take the lessons learned from this this year and next year be more intentional with how we continue to grow our Capstone programs and the performance task assessments or projects that our students engaged in to really connect the content to the their their own life we want to continue with ethnic studies implementation and course development as you heard from our public speakers ethnic studies is something we've been doing for quite some time but you know it's a graduation requirement it's coming quickly and we want to make sure that we're continuing to work in not only the course development but the way that we do professional learning with our teachers who are going to be engaged engaging in those courses to do in a way that's very sensitive very loving but also that's done in a way where we're really celebrating our differences in celebrating the perspectives of other cultures racial groups as well this is not about teaching hate or dividing cultures it's really about bringing people together and that belonging so that's going to be essential to our Focus as we continue our ethnic studies implementation and then lastly and this isn't all but the highlighted areas of areas of growth for us is to expand our math demonstration labs to include High School teachers we've done a lot of work the last several years intentionally around our Junior highs and we're going to continue to support math at our Junior Highs but one of the things that we've learned is now we have the time and the need to expand to our high schools so this for this upcoming year the math demonstration lab will go to our high schools as well and that's going to include I believe it's Savannah Magnolia and Cyprus so those are the three schools and I can explain if you'd like a little bit with the math demo Labs look like but that those opportunities are going to be expanded to our high schools and then lastly for me before I turn it back over to miss Bean is the parent engagement piece and uh I know Mr Hernandez and our team we have a conference right now that they're at but we want to talk about parent engagement and what we're doing to to have met that local indicator so you can see we seek input from parents and decision making process that's the standard that we are expected to uphold and also promoting parent participation in a variety of programs we also use the reflective tools they've given us to gauge how we're doing in this area for us one of the things that we've learned as we continue to reflect and we've shared at previous meetings is the strengths that we have as it connects to parent and family engagement we have our 13 Community Schools and we're proud to say the work that we've done to really build those Family Resource Centers at those schools while supporting the schools that haven't been designated as a community school to continue to build a space where parents and families can come in and feel connected and get the support and resources that they need as well the services and programming that's implemented at the based on the individual site needs and assets assessments so we've been doing surveys to really collect the unique data for each School Community knowing that what Cypress High School may need may look very different than what a catala high school may need and making sure that we really take the time to learn about our communities the assets they bring but also the needs they have so we can intentionally then provide the right supports that they're asking for as we collect that data we want to make sure that when we do this work with our families we've been really proud that we have an asset base approach with our work so we're really starting from the place of what's working in our community we absolutely know that there are challenges that we see in our face within every one of our communities but we really are trying intentionally to begin our approach that acid-base approached starting with what's working and how do we leverage that to grow and expand and support the areas that are identified as gaps or needs and then we're really proud of the work that we've built around our parent reflective learning walks our parent leadership academies our family education series that have created this cultural responsive approach to teaching and learning is creating that environment where we want our families and our communities to feel welcomed in a sense of belonging and again create that Focus where everything that we're doing still connects back to the classroom and then lastly the strength that we want to share are the opportunities that we've created for parents to actively participate in decision making bodies with at the site level and at the district level this is an example you might see at our district dlac our district English learner advisory Council or the site level elac same same concept you'll see this at our school site councils at the site we also have our district steering committee we have parents who serve on our district attorney and are at the table helping to make decisions as well in terms of how we not only look to spend the money as to support our community school approach but looking at the data that we're collecting to basically help us make informed decisions on on what each respective community may need so we can make sure that we're addressing those needs and celebrating and promoting those assets areas of growth next steps within uh the focus of parent and family engagement we recently just came back from Canada where we got to work with a district in Surrey and one of the reasons we went up there one of a few reasons was to learn more about the way that they use data to inform their next steps they have a research and evaluation team and we went up there to look about how we can more effectively analyze and then publicly share out the various data points that we collect you know we know that many districts ourselves included can have tons of data at our fingerprints but being able to use it in a way that really does inform next steps and communicate in a way that makes sense to all of our community members is essential sometimes as you know we can get caught up in Edge you speak we're using the educational jargon that may overwhelm people who are not from the educational Arena so we want to make sure that we're really intentional with how we collect this data and then use it to really improve outcomes for both our students and in this case our families our parents we also want to look at leadership capacity and engagement as you know even though we've done a lot of work to improve and expand upon our parent numbers in terms of Engagement we still have students and Families who may be disengaged how can we be more intentional to connect with a disengage that is a priority that we're really going to go deeper with this next year and I can share as well at the end if you'd like some specific strategies that we have in place to try to really Reach Out intentionally to grow our parent engagement opportunities and to reach out to those families who are often not at the table when we're trying to connect with them to help them with with the decisions that we're making and the work that we're trying to engage in and now I'm going to shift it back to this Bean who's going to talk about school climate so School climate is related to the perceptions of school safety and connectedness the tool that the district uses is the lcap student survey and the California healthy kids survey that's administered in 7th 9th and 11th grade the district met the standard for this social or sorry the school climate indicator last year the students took about 50 percent of students in auhsd took the lcaps survey and the results showed that 71.4 percent of all students reported that their school provides them the races resources needed to learn while in school 73 percent felt they had access to a school counselor 73.7 percent share that their teachers include activities and lessons which incorporate the five C's and 72.3 percent of students feel their school has made a significant effort to keep them informed about important issues and events they participate in some of the things that we've done over the years and will continue to do to improve School climate are implementing resources that resources such as capturing kids hearts and working with OC human relations to provide restorative justice Specialists to support our schools these programs help promote skill development self-managing classrooms decrease discipline issues focus on building community and fostering respect resolving conflict and pursuing equality additionally students are encouraged to have voice and discover their purpose classroom instruction focuses on the five C's and the career preparedness systems framework to improve academics increase student engagement and decrease unwanted behaviors to also improve upon students building a positive connection to their school each high school has a student ambassador that leads their respective schools raising student voices and participation or RSVP program rsbc students work alongside the administration of their school to learn more about their campus and how they can make an impact at their site students develop self-advocacy and Leadership skills and learn the process of how changes can be made at their site and District level and therefore contributing and informing the lcap they are encouraged to be civically engaged and participate in service opportunities RSVP is student-led and plays a vital role in empowering student voices to make lasting district-wide change and the last priority I'm going to talk about is course access and this ensures that students have access to and and are enrolled in a broad course of study are areas of strength here in auhsd is our a through G completion rate we are at a 55.9 percent a through G completion rate and out we are outperforming other Orange County school districts and almost every student group we have 25 unique CTE Pathways offered across 12 officially recognized Industries in 2022 16 percent of our graduates completed a two to three year sequence of a CTE pathway auhsd offers eight World languages in the areas of Spanish French Korean Japanese Arabic Mandarin American Sign Language and Vietnamese in 2022 21.3 percent of our graduating class earned estate sale by literacy and that is actually a leading number in the states of California we offer Arts programs at every school with a broad range of options in both Visual and Performing Arts and lastly we have a broad set of dual enrollment coursers courses offered both during the school day and after school and currently every single high school has dual enrollment offered during the school day in 2022 we had 1565 individual students take a dual enrollment course and many kids take more than one class and so for a total of 2 530 classes were taken and recorded on high school transcripts are areas of growth are really to still strengthen the connection between the students interests and their strengths to their six-year plan which then feeds our master schedule process and ensures that we have access to students to all of these wonderful programs on building a strategic system will increase the student's ability to take a through G coursework while also wanting to complete a pathway or in the syllabi literacy be in their visual performing arts arts courses or being a dual enrollment course or sometimes all of those things I'm so we're really working still on the implementation of a district-wide six-year plan through Aries and e-cadence that ties the strengths and the assess their strengths assessments that the students take in thrively and we are always working on leveraging the master schedule process to ensure access for all student groups into these opportunities so as we transition on to the lcat presentation I just wanted to tie together how the work around the local indicators in the dashboard informs the development of the lcap so so the data that was provided on the dashboard identifies our areas of strength in our areas of need and those local indicators provide us with additional data to inform the decision making and planning or during the lcap process so now I'm going to invite Dr Roxanna Hernandez to share with us about our lcat profit or Dr free just kidding sorry I'm going to come up real quick before I bring up Dr Hernandez because as we transition to our lcap portion of the presentation I want to first begin by just acknowledging not only Dr Hernandez but also I know Robert solivar is not here he's at a conference but just their leadership and the great work that they did in leading our community through this process it's it's it's a big undertaking to put six sessions or five sessions together collect the data do things in a timely manner to create not only the booklet but then organize the groups communicate the findings in each focus group back to the group coordinate the efforts with our steering committee who looks at the work collectively to navigate and make some decisions they have done just a tremendous job in leading them through our community through this process I want to First to acknowledge Dr Hernandez Mr Salter for their leadership I also want to thank I know Joe Carmona's in the room he and Manuel Colones you know have led this process the last several years and with this transition with both Robert and Roxanna be new he's been a tremendous sport I know to Roxanna and our team in helping with that transition through just through that lens of coherence so Joe I know we really appreciate you and your support you're always going to be an ed staff member at heart right so we know that and then lastly I want to thank our coordinators and directors who are in the room uh who who not only participate in the lcap process but they also facilitate so when we break our families and our community up into different rooms and this year as you'll learn we were so large we had to go to two completely different facilities we couldn't host them all here it is our directors our coordinators and our basically our district leaders that really step up to help facilitate and Lead our parents our students our colleagues across the district through this process so I want to thank them for their leadership because we know it's not an easy process when you're sometimes it feels like you're hurting cats they all come with their own agendas but to facilitate that conversation in a way that's meaningful people that's respectful and that ultimately leads to outcomes that's going to better support our students it's with a lot of gratitude that I I think our Ed staff HR business team for their leadership so now with that it gives me great pleasure to bring up Dr Hernandez who will lead us to our lcap journey foreign thank you Dr freed um it is my pleasure to provide an overview of this year's local control and accountability plan as well as our education partner engagement process but before I do that I know that Dr Frieda already thanked folks that have laid the foundation but I also want to take a moment and acknowledge the work of our board and cabinet for laying the foundation to a robust and inclusive process I want to start with a quick review of the local control funding formula and how it works the local control funding formula is the way the state provides funding to school districts under lcff school districts receive a uniform base grant for every student which is adjusted by grade level school districts such as ours receives additional supplemental grants for students with greater needs defined as our unduplicated pupils low-income English Learners and Foster youth we also receive additional concentration funding when the number of unduplicated students enrolled in the district make up more than 55 percent of our District's total enrollment the state has identified eight priority areas to help students succeed the eight priorities can be categorized into three domains conditions for learning engagement and student outcomes under conditions for learning we have the following priorities basic conditions implementation of state standards and access to a broad course of study under student outcomes we have student achievement and other people outcomes also under their priority engagement we have parent family engagement student engagement and school climate at auhsd we see the lcap development process as an opportunity to tell our story to highlight our accomplishments and gain comprehensive Insight from our educational partners we are in year two of a three-year plan this year the focus was to assess and evaluate last year's actions and based on our most current data come to a consensus to maintain and or enhance our actions through recommended priorities the recommendations are also based on the state priorities and our needs and assets in auhsd the development of the lcap has been a unifying process that involves significant and purposeful engagement with our educational partners and we're very proud of that we have developed a three lcap goals these goals are aligned to the eight State priorities our district vision mission and core values every year we'd like to take a moment to revisit these goals and ensure that they continue to represent our district values and drivers and these goals continue to do just that When developing the lcap we closely looked at data specific to our unduplicated students again these are our low-income English Learners and Foster youth we also reviewed the needs of unduplicated students that may also be students with disabilities and or homeless youth during the engagement process we asked our educational Partners to keep these important student groups at the Forefront of their decision making and their recommendations as you can see here um this is an image of the lcap process which was a true convening and a Hands-On collaborative experiences for our stakeholders here is our 2023 lcap timeline we began the process back in January with our d-lac lcat presentation followed by the steering committee and lcap meetings we then submitted the lcap to the Orange County Department of Ed in May and we will end the lcap process this year with the board of trustee l-cap approval on June 15th our educational Partners were provided with an lcap booklet that contains our lcap meeting dates lcap goals our auhsd mission vision and core values it also contains information on our educational drivers and the 2223 lcat planning tool the booklet was made available in English Korean Spanish and Vietnamese a copy was made available for our board to peruse at your leisure as part of our engagement process this year we had an esteemed guest and educational partner Dr Jose Moreno speak at our parent orientation and he launched our first whole lcap meeting he supported us in contextualizing our data pushing our thinking and encouraging dialogue and inquiry that helped guide our conversations through the lcat process this year we saw an increase in student participation and we want to thank our student ambassadors for their Outreach efforts in encouraging their fellow peers to participate in the lcap we also want to thank our transportation department for providing busing that allowed for more student engagement additionally this year in an effort to keep sites students and parents informed and updated regarding the lcap activities taking place during the focus group meetings our student ambassadors once again Rose to the occasion and created the lcap meeting highlights the highlights included presentations and videos summarizing the lcap focus group meetings and our site principles shared the lcap highlights during their weekly communication or use the presentations in videos to further discuss the lcat process during their site level coffee chance the lcap highlights were also made available on the district's web page special thanks to Mrs Hilda Vazquez for supporting our ambassadors with this effort also new this year are principals held site level lcap data chats these data chats provided parents and families with a more in-depth review of their site-specific data and metrics special thanks to aracely Chavez for working with their faces to support these efforts lastly we want to thank Brookhurst principal Mr amancio and his maintenance and operation crew for opening their doors and allowing us to expand our focus groups to the school site here you see our educational partner engagement process so our meetings started from February to April three of the meetings were conducted in focus groups and the other two meetings were held at large and included staff families students and partner agencies additionally five steering committee meetings were held to oversee the lcap process plan engagement meetings consult with necessary partners and debrief the findings from state from the stakeholder engagement meetings the lcap education partner input process began with surveys completed by parents students and staff the district received a total of nineteen thousand eight hundred and eighty nine responses 340 of these responses came from students 3764 responses from parents and 1785 responses from staff these surveys were completed in February and they identified areas of focus that were incorporated into the partner engagement process Additionally the district had over 550 in-person participants attend one or more lcap focus group meeting our students were the second highest majority in attendance as part of the process we had four focus groups structured around the eight priorities focus group members concentrated on draft recommendations that were related to the state priorities assigned to their focus group and each focus group consisted of Partners from all groups focus group members examined and refined lcap recommendations through the lens of the state priority to which they were assigned [Applause] here's a glimpse of our focus groups at work as you can see they were very well attended and engaging the focus groups developed recommended priorities that were considered by all partners in the final lcap whole group meeting educational Partners were able to submit electronically their top three recommended priorities here's a synopsis of the highest agreed upon recommendations Priority One and Two was to lower class size hire and retain teachers and increase the ability to build deeper and more authentic connections between teachers and students recommended priority number three to retain or hire more counselors social workers psychologists and keep smaller caseloads to provide quality academic and social support for all students especially mckinney-vento Foster youth plural lingual students low income and students with disabilities recommended priority 4 is to research and Implement flexible learning opportunities and course offerings for all students for example Bill schedules block scheduling hybrid classes or programming and expand e-learning here are additional priorities that were recommended all of the priorities are listed in the lcap By Priority order as established by our educational Partners these recommendations haven't have enhanced our existing lcap action items as you can see in the image we had a full house on our final day we were very proud of our student representatives from each focus group who came up to the podium to present their group's recommendations an additional highlight that night was an auhsd talk presented by Susana quesada a student at Katella high school we were very proud of the outpouring of educational Partners but especially proud of our ambassadors and student representation throughout the lcap process here are some additional pictures of the last l-cap where our superintendent Mr matsuda emphasized that the lcap process is proof that democracy is alive in well in auhsd where students parents and staff have a voice in the lcap process and of course you can't forget the time we spent celebrating the culmination of the process with the taco dinner so at this point I would like to invite Dr free to make the final remarks on our lcap process and share some highlights thank you sir Hernandez all right as we come to a conclusion conclusion of our presentation just a reminder that this process really looks deeply at the things that we can do to improve outcomes for our students and as we're doing this sorry usually really loud uh as we're doing this work we're reminded that front and center is the work that we do instructionally what happens in the classroom and we're reminded about our framework our career preparedness systems framework and the work that we've been doing and engaging with our students and our families to ensure they get a whole child approach to education as we celebrated our time together we were reminded of of accomplishments that we as a district have have really been fortunate and blessed to celebrate over the years because of the work that we've done still recognizing there's work to be done but we want to take a Time the time to celebrate our work that the lcap has brought these kinds of accomplishments so as an example you can see when you look at our a3g completion rate you know in 2122 we're at a 55.9 percent well the state average was a 43.6 percent our graduation rates at 92.4 whereas the state average is 87 percent in Civic engagement you all know that we have all of our schools all 20 schools have been recognized and designated as California democracy schools we have proportionally the largest number of Community Schools where this past year we had 13 schools receive funding to begin their work intentional work to really serve as a community school as a hub for their community and I'm proud to say that we just received two additional schools in this upcoming Grant where that I'll be joining our 13 previous schools hope and Polaris bringing us to a total of 15.

thank you so much and one more scholarship out of order I'm going to go ahead and call to this stage for the Joshua Scott Citizenship Award Mrs Scott [Applause] good evening I am the proud parent of the child graduated from here in high school in 1997. it was a long time resident of Ewing and I've been presenting this award for 32 years so the thing that amazes me year after year is something that doesn't amaze me because I'm used to it Ewing Township is like a well-kept Hidden Gem Secret and the year after year I sit in the audience and I see students that just blow me away and I know that that's because they come from wonderful families and they're supported by an amazing staff and I've gone through a bunch of principles and Boards of educations and things in 32 years and yet the standard is always just beautifully high and so I'm going to be quite proud of so congratulations to all of you who have achieved something wonderful don't know exactly what it is yet but it's early in the program so I come on stage in the midst of all of this achievement and recognition and we turn the tables a little bit because this is not an Award presented for GPA or scholarship in a certain subject or athletic achievement this is an award that is presented annually in memory of my son Joshua Scott who was would have been a Ewing high school graduate taken way too early when he was 14 years old and out of the sorrow and shock of that event what we learned was many many people coaches and teachers and neighbors and church members came to us to express the things that they loved about Joshua and I have to say I'm sure I'm very prejudiced but he was an extraordinarily good kind person and that has nothing to do with academics or sports or anything that gets recognized on a night like tonight but they also said was that they wished that they had told him what they thought of him and they regretted that they had not so out of that we thought well you know what we can at least find one student every year and tell them how amazing we think they are just as a person not as an academic person but just as a just a person and tell them that we see it so that's why I am here to present the Joshua Scott Memorial award an excuse me I had to put my glasses on if I'm going to read this this is presented in memory of Joshua Wisconsin [Music] a loving son friends too many and person to be trusted this award is presented to a ninth grade student who shares these qualities and this year it is my pleasure to present this to Samuel Leibowitz never know the students before I get here so I couldn't tell you whether they were here or not apparently not well thank you very much and just let me say one thing to all of you please go tell someone young or old how special you think they are thank you [Applause] the coordinator of the Ralph Dover Memorial Scholarship was unable to join us tonight but I'm happy to share the following words on his behalf his scholarship was standing on the outside looking in never quite fully comfortable in his own skin and never receiving the appreciation his talents truly deserved Ralph also showed us how sad it was when a life is lost too soon and potential is left unrealized since the Inception the raft Dover Memorial Scholarship has provided over one million dollars in scholarships rap scholarship Works to help support those individuals that we feel have the potential to truly make a difference to let them know they are appreciated and that we believe in them and what they can accomplish to let them know that we have faith and that they in turn will one day carry the spirit forward is our utmost pleasure to award the raft over Memorial Scholarship recipients five thousand dollars each to help them start their team he displayed his leadership skills by helping to recruit long-distance Runners for the eighth track season Matthew is set to study biology at Columbia University in the fall our next recipient is yeah I'm gonna get a penalty there yeah they're they're they're working their way they've got a little something going here 24 is gonna be uh number 24 Martha Walker gonna get a first eight meter opportunity we'll see here if Eastlawn metal can get a body in front oh great great save by Jenna great save here picked up and then we're off to the race going down and we've got uh alley time Natalia Weiss running down there and keep up with her oh wow and then we're all popcorning all over the place let's see who gets there again you know this is this is where East Longmeadow is this is taking advantage of of you know these loose balls they're getting most of them and that's huge what a great good idea from bridge good idea tough pass though it was just a little right idea lucasic was open in the middle pass was a little bit low and it just couldn't couldn't get picked up but again I mean you're looking at you know the East Longmeadow ride it's going to be very challenging I mean especially here I mean if if Weiss gets up there on number 24 right now I mean they're just going to cover her they just they're not going to let her you know touch it very easily I mean and that's a fine penalty free slot metal because you know 24 is gonna you know they're gonna have three people on her they're gonna have to find somebody else to get the ball too and then you know you're just gonna sit on her was that just a little too much body there this just to stick up too close to the you know wall that she had it in a protected space and you're kind of banging the stick you can't can't really do that so it looks like Weiss is now shadowing Walker and I think that's oh she still got it through though but barely I mean yeah and this is you know this is uh this looks like their best strategy here and a very nice play by Ali Thompson there to to disrupt the passion almost picked up there was a bang on the stick before I'm surprised the penalty wasn't called but it looked to me like the ref was just gonna let that one play through and if Holliston got it they got it but they're at the 12.

and I'll go pretty briefly over some of the the core plan components and especially because I know this is all all verbal here yeah we're still trying to find out what happened to the slides as I mentioned and I apologize we're having a little bit of a challenge on having our computers connecting with the screen I know that we have our question yeah okay great that's good to know so um so uh one thing that the core planning team really popular was this this North Star statement what are we ultimately trying to uh to achieve and there's a few different components of that so one is really about supporting the potential uh the unique and full potential of every student supporting students in core academic areas and on their path to College and Career uh multilingualism which is a kind of a theme throughout the Strategic plan that was one piece of this to provide opportunities for all students to learn multiple languages for families to be meaningfully engaged in their children's education for the school system and the surrounding Community to have a a relationship of mutual support for the education Workforce to thrive and have ongoing opportunities to grow and to be United as students as families community and Educators in supporting each other and advancing our children to Bright Futures there's also a brief set of guiding principles and the idea behind the guiding principles is that these are things that are our core beliefs core tenets that we bring to all decisions to all parts of our our work and uh just briefly those are service Student Success diversity collaboration and transparency there's a lot of this came together around a visual which I know is it's a bad time to have a visual right now but there's uh I'll try to describe it in in the meantime yeah thank you very much so those there's a triangle in the center which has the vision uh and there's three sides to the triangle and each side represents one of the um uh key priority areas and then all of this is kind of in service of a circle around the edge so you'll you'll see it and can tell me how good a job I've done describing it um uh it's uh on six it's coming there it is no slide number six keep scrolling up right there so in the in the center is this blue triangle and in the middle is the vision statement all Alum Rock students will be ready for the future in a diverse and competitive world the vision we're working toward then the three sides of the triangle each represent a priority area one of the ways that we're going to help make progress toward that vision the the bottom uh part of the triangle is whole child and whole family development on the left side we have Multicultural and multilingual education and on the right side uh early and expanded learning and we'll share a little bit about or review a little bit rather about the specific goals in each of those priority areas and all of this is surrounded by uh in support of this in a yellow circle with two items on it academic growth and Improvement in College and Career Readiness so that's kind of the the framing for this uh this vision and these priority areas as in service of of those results foreign if we go to the the next slide I'll briefly recap some of the specific goals here um so first we're going to go across or around the triangle I suppose starting with this first priority area whole child and whole family development and the first goal there is to foster a shared understanding of what that means uh among families among staff among Community Partners second is to ensure there are uh services and supports across the various domains of whole Child Development academic cognitive behavioral social emotional third we reference the the multi-tiered system of support the mtss as a framework to help deliver and make available these Services across those different domains and fourth is uh fostering a love of learning which is something that came up very prominently in the in the planning process and ensuring that students have opportunities to be creative and in control of their own learning experience on on the next slide uh we get into Multicultural and multilingual education just a few shorter goals here um but powerful all Alum Rock students have the opportunity to learn multiple languages uh is the first goal in this in this area we want to ensure that that schools celebrate cultures and focus on cultural education incorporate cultural education and that school professionals are culturally proficient and provided with opportunities themselves to learn multiple languages and the third uh side of the triangle the third priority here is around early and expanded learning um we can scroll down to the next slide please and these are two two um related but distinct things and so there are elements of this that are more related to Early Learning pre-kindergarten and there are elements of this that are more related to expanded learning before school after school summer intercession programs um so students and families having access to free high quality Early Learning Preschool before and after school and summer programs that support this whole Child Development that we talked about in in the first priority uh that there's a shared understanding of how the school day and expanded learning are working together and uh aligned with each other and then a third goal here final goal around uh expanded and early learning engaging families as well as children and engaging older students to work with and support younger students so that's a bit of a rapid tour through the Strategic plan the three priority areas and the the goals that we have within them and as as the Strategic plan was adopted last June one of the major next steps that was identified was to do some more detailed uh action planning or implementation planning these goals are still at a fairly high level what is this going to look like what is the specific work moving forward uh and if we go to the the next slide please we have um just a few notes on the process that has has uh taken place since that adoption of the Strategic plan so right after it uh we had a oh can we scroll to the next slide please okay sorry just a little delay thank you um so there were a couple of management Retreats that uh included sessions focused on uh building out actions ideas for for what needs to happen What work is already ongoing that we need to build on in relation to these goals so that was really a focus on in June getting familiar with the goals in the plan and thinking about where is their ongoing work and what else is needed uh in August continued that looked at some some draft uh a draft implementation plan and had a session to look at each goal and see you know what are the what are the uh initiatives that need to happen who should be responsible for driving those uh what are indicators of success and what's our timeline and we continued that uh work later in the fall with some some targeted meetings and then in in Spring to uh refine that work into the the draft or rather the implementation plan that you all have uh today and that we'll talk a little bit mostly about the structure uh and if we go to the the next actually we can skip down two slides here so uh as as mentioned earlier the the Strategic plan sits at this pretty high level uh there's a vision there's three priority areas and there's goals within each the implementation plan takes the next step in terms of level of detail specific initiatives for each goal uh for each of those initiatives who's responsible for moving it Forward what are some measures of success and what is the timeline uh at kind of an annual timeline that we're anticipating moving the work forward on uh one just kind of uh footnote on the timeline is it is pretty high level just annual uh or by year but there are some um reference to or recognition that a lot of this work will take planning time itself uh and that some years will will be planning years leading into implementation year so maybe a little small to see but there's in the tables we'll look at in a second uh there's peas in some of the columns to indicate a planning a year and then eyes to indicate implementation uh so if we go to the next slide here I'm not going to walk through all of the the language on the slides but just wanted to share a couple of examples of what this looks like uh this is the uh the implementation plan table for the goal around implementing a multi-tiered system of support um and I don't think if that's legible to people you have much better eyesight than I do uh and and I'll just call out a couple of uh of notes Here so there's in the in the earlier years some planning to establish some documentation some consistent structures to standardize what the tier one uh instruction and support across district schools looks like and then there's some some reference uh as as well to specific training that will need to accompany implementation of the the mtss to allow all sites to provide those tier one Services as well as higher tier services to to students and families uh who need them and can benefit from them uh and then the next slide just gives us a second example to call out it looks pretty similar uh and and this one is really about schools celebrating cultures and focusing on cultural education and one piece uh there's a few places in the implementation plan where we call out the need to uh get clear about our definitions and get on the same page about definitions and so this is one example of starting with defining multiculturalism supplementing curricula uh with materials that reflect cultural experiences and identities of students hosting cultural celebrations and implementing the ethnic studies curriculum and some of this is ongoing work clearly but work that felt important to to lift up in relation to this goal of celebrating cultures and focusing on cultural education in the next slide as I mentioned those are just two examples across the um 10 goals that are in the in the plan and so this just calls out a few other areas uh that are notable a notable action areas that come up in the in the implementation plan expanding and enriching dual language programs and language instruction Early Learning Communications campaign and program expansion making uh increasing the availability of uh of those types of programs but also increasing the awareness of the availability of those types of programs Community Schools which there is is a an ongoing planning process around I mentioned a moment ago implementation of ethnic studies curriculum culturally responsive teaching uh professional development in in that area the district-wide multi-tiered system of support which we just went over briefly and enrichment opportunities for students so those are some of the things that are included in the full details of the uh of the implementation plan uh in the next slide there's got a couple more as we are looking ahead uh we want to continue to use this implementation plan as a guide for the work in 2324 and Beyond and as I noted earlier one of the key next steps from adopting the Strategic plan was development of this higher level of detail uh in implementation planning uh also looking ahead there's going to be a need to revisit this regularly things shifts opportunities emerge uh uh things get implemented on a different timeline than initially anticipal would and so there's a need to come back to this fairly uh regularly annually to see what needs to change particularly looking at the next year uh and then reporting annually to the Board of Trustees on progress made and this was something that was included as part of the resolution adopting the Strategic plan so this is something that was requested effectively um by by the board along with adoption of the Strategic plan and then finally um people are cold later on hey that's important we want to be comfortable while we're talking about an implementation plan famous everybody left so now um this is just I kind of wanted to end on this visual which is very similar to what we looked at earlier but it's kind of filled in to show the connection between the vision and you know academic growth and and College and Career Readiness uh it it lists out in it and we could see in a blown up version or a zoomed in version that that it's got all of the 10 goals kind of nested uh within that space between the vision and those those desired outcomes um so ultimately wanted to to just uh share with you all a refresher on on the Strategic plan and to share the updates on on the work that has been done on implementation planning uh since last June okay thank you so much Aaron so uh with that I'll open it up the public comment okay seeing no public comment I will open it to questions and comments by members of the board vice president Herrera loera thank you and thank you so much for your presentation um I have a couple questions uh actually I'll I um I'll bring it down to one question I think we'll answer my second question on the goal of three a um I appreciate how we got the breakdown even further in our report here um and I have a question regarding the last um initiative that's listed there and I don't know if you have that in front of you I'll read it yeah you got it okay so that one um highlights The Early Learning um intervention um and referring obviously the students that are identified um for services and I'm wondering if I'm missing anywhere uh where we do the intervention for the K-8 students um I I see that missing here um as a mother of an eighth grader or now now ninth going on tonight um who you know struggled in certain areas um I for me it's very important that we also have that intervention um and that we highlighted somewhere so maybe I'm missing it or if you can help me find where the interventions would be yeah thank you for the question and and call out uh I I I do think this is where it is in 3A is focused on early intervention I don't I don't believe there's an equivalent um for older grades in the Strategic plan um you know I imagine there's ongoing work there so that's a good flag to see where we might incorporate that in some of the other goals great yeah I would love to see that thank you so much okay across the Explorer Shelton thank you um again I think I've been starting a lot of my comments off last meeting with like great job guys you've been true you know I'm new to this I'm looking at your strategic plan our strategic plan and think um what a it feels like the community is is um being heard the initiatives that you we've been knocking out a lot of these things and so it feels bold it feels representative of priorities um and it's you know someone who's written strategic plans and also I'm on the implementation side I know there's a lot of work under each of these so I Look to Administration and staff and understand this is a big lift but it really hopefully are the things that we've all identified would move the needle for our kids for our teachers um so I just want to compliment um everybody on this these are these are really great priorities so couple questions and comments um I do think measures of success you know help us understand um better are we moving the needle and so I'd like us to kind of reflect on such as like expand the availability of evidence-based Family Programs that's the the initiative the measure of success is calendar of offerings participation records like it feels like will we will we have a Baseline and will we like do we have a number so we can say three years from now we did that by X percentage so just trying to like when we get to the end line how will we know um versus oh I looked at the calendar and I don't know point in time like is this more or less so just things like that to help us measure our success really clearly um on the Community Schools uh work you know that is I think kind of at a Statewide level right really um it's exciting and just wanting to make sure that we bring that back on a regular basis to understand where we're at you know we've got a planning I know I think we have the planning Grant we've done some Community engagement in that um I think it feels like this this coming year is a big year for understanding what the next steps are for Community Schools so kind of like a short-term um priority for the Strategic plan um so I want to understand that more in the coming months and I had um so more from like what is a strategic plan right it's an aspirational document right it's and I think that some of the work that you've all done and the things we talked about tonight about really being explicit about being an anti-racist organization um I feel like we could challenge ourselves around diversity more right diversity we have to celebrate it we do celebrate it um but there's more there we should be leaning past diversity um we say inclusion a lot from like uh you know from our different abilities um but I feel like we could be centering um anti-racism more you know go be going Beyond diversity so it's just again um our guiding principle around diversity I get it right what could we do more how can we be more aspirational around some of the other pieces that we um are talking about and I think ethnic studies is is a huge it's a huge lift in Milestone um so what else right and so strategically I just would like us to keep pushing ourselves and um great great start and I look forward to sort of at an annual basis how are we looking at the measurements to see where our accomplishments on our challenges and where we have barriers that we need to either bring resources or policies Institute so thank you thank you uh if I may yes uh more precedent because I see Dr Alamos I'm here and Community Schools is kind of embedded right Aaron Aaron and Dr al-man have been working if I may give the board a brief update Dr almasan about what we have been able to do up for now regarding that a little bit about the definition could it is part of the Strategic plan it is part of what we're going to be doing we I well I'm going to let Dr almasan kind of give the board a brief very brief update around that I will try to do my best and I apologize for my congestion here so um the Community Schools planning year has been an amazing year where we engaged um members of our bargaining units with area with Coca with our Community Partners from different organizations such as scoey verse 5 um fidango Catholic Charities as well as parents and students and so and of course members of our Administration right and within the last 10 months nine to ten months we have used our planning year to basically align the vision of community schools with our strategic plan because we see that Community Schools really intersect with all the three goals that you have heard of tonight as well as the overarching academic growth and college readiness Vision as well because really Community Schools really expand the learning of all of our students in K through 8 and trustee Herrera who asked about where do you see the interventions right and I see the interventions for example in the ntss structure that we are going to implement because this year we really are we really tried to ready the system first before we implement and so when we value the system we have to look at all of our areas where what are we doing well and what are we still missing and that work is really going to come from even more from a deeper level and into intentionality when we do the planning with the schools because that's the second level of our year with the Community Schools so that we continue to ready the system with parent input Community input teacher staff input as well as the student voice right because that is one of the most important uh pieces because our consumers our our students are our consumers of the services that we give and so we cannot forget about them as well and I know from work with state and federal we are also ready the system to bring in that student advisory committee as well so we would like to also bring back that thought um to your attention as well and so really another aspect of the Community Schools is really intentionally aligning the services that we have already impressed and strengthening um and knowing the needs of the of the community through a asset mapping and strengths analysis that will be coming and being part of that work that's coming up and we're also and we're also in the I think final stages of asset and wrapping your needs assessment as well so more to come on that and I know I've said a lot I know I talked about it you had said very briefly but but I get excited about this type of limit I got really excited so yeah for the implementation Grant okay right uh in March of 2024 because we have two years of planning yes so that will be coming soon president Pam can I follow up yes thank you so much thank you Dr Amazon um I wanted to I was in a meeting today with the San Jose Youth Empowerment Alliance it's the former San Jose mayor's game prevention task force interagency committee and it was I uh was brought to my attention that the county will be putting out the wellness center RFP uh shortly um and so it felt like a lot of this planning and your asset mapping and all this good stuff and right this is I think we probably have a good footprint in alamook but have we saturated right and what right um I don't know if we've saturated so no so those according to what I heard today would be um I think that uh it'll be released soon or released in September or due in September I'll I'm hoping you have a connection but I can help make that connection we appreciate that okay that's through the county exec's office and then the the other piece is just about um you know interventions in general you know the Panorama data that we do have I think is just you know critical to sort of understanding and lifting up to to get all these resources to the table because that question about belonging seems to be with all the partners um are are at like the the children of the agenda for kids in common their next year is going to be all focused on do kids have a sense of purpose right this this whole post pandemic um you know we're hearing you know their board or anxious or depressed and you know yeah self-medicating with whatever that is right so um so I think you have the rich data you've got sort of the structure and the planning in place so how can we leverage and bring the dollars to make all this happen so awesome okay thanks thank you so much further questions and comments by members of the board seeing them thank you so much Aaron and thank you so much Dr Amazon for providing that that additional primer to the board uh with that we move on to comments and Communications uh item 4.1 Teamsters Teamster Center regards oh no I don't know if anybody's here from Teamsters Alan was here earlier on and since his regards to divorce I believe they um ratified this afternoon [Music] okay uh with that when we want yeah 4.02 California School Employees Association okay we have Robin I forgot your last name Robin I apologize yes that's okay hello uh members of the board superintendent power uh some of you already know me for those who may not my name is Robin James udegard the Labor Relations representative from California School Employees Association representing csca's uh Alum Rock chapter number 305.

and because of the great work that we've been doing we are serving as a leader for the state as one of three districts that serve as a demonstration district for our community school approach which is grounded in instruction so with that I thank you for the time this this uh this evening and we now will take any questions that you might have as it connects to our process or the lcap plan so thank you School thank you staff for your presentation and Miss Guerrero you have any questions yes I did I had a few thank you so much uh two three of you for presenting um I think my first question I think you spoke about the math lab can you elaborate a little more on that and how that's been working in the junior highs yeah so the math lab is a professional learning experience and what it what we found is that our teachers needed support and how they continue to grow their mathematical practices uh and and pedagogies around math uh when when I know when I grew up and for many of us that when we were in math classes it was very much about math calculations teaching students to memorize formulas and equations and a lot of repetition whereas the standards that were now expected to implement are really more about the conceptualization of math and really thinking about the logic behind Math and how we really approach problems so it's a different way of teaching math essentially and the math Labs serve as we have in the junior high we've had I think four schools the high schools are gonna have the three where we have really it's an East Center and West approach but we have we've identified teachers and math who have really been the models for bringing these kinds of instructional practices in the classroom and there have been a couple of periods of release and what happens is just like a reflective teacher learning walk Katie Childers our math curriculum specialist previously Julie Spider-Man I know Amy Kwan is in the room who at one point was overseeing mathematics we would get Math teachers from across the district on any on various days where they'd be pulled out to go visit these math demonstration teachers where they would begin their morning observing the teacher and watching him or her teach their content with some reflection that would take place afterwards when the visits were over and observing the instruction they would then have time with the teacher to really reflect and dialogue with them in terms of the why behind the lesson design why I did this why I did that where they would build capacity in lesson design and the approach to mathematical practices and then there was time built today where those teachers who went on the visit had time to engage in lesson design themselves integrating what they've learned throughout that morning into their own practices so we were starting to see movement in the way that teachers were shifting their approach to teaching learning is it connected to math so that's why we wanted to expand it to the high schools we started with the junior highs because that's where we felt the need was the greatest in the beginning because there were transition elementary junior high and we really needed to focus on the professional learning there that's where we began our integrated approach as well and now it's maturating up to the high school level right and how are those sites selected to participate it was really selected based on the teachers that were on their campus who had the capacity and have demonstrated the skill set to teach to do that shift there also had to be a willingness on the teacher right we could say hey we want you teacher a to do this but they had to be willing to yeah I'm willing to take two periods or three periods of release to be a leader for the district and have people come to my classroom regularly and for me to then walk them through my lesson design so at the junior high and this is off the cuff I think it's Mr Watson who's at Orange view Miss Reed who is at um South then there is Miss hose who's at ball and then there's a new teacher at Dale Jessica Kim who's at Dale in the high schools because it's going to be new this next year I know Miss fault I think is at Cyprus and I I can't remember the other teachers they're they're gonna be starting this next year but they were selected because they've demonstrated over and over again their uh Innovation the classroom in the way that they approach teaching learning is really more connected to our cpsf framework it's really a whole child approach to education and math than it is about just teaching facts formulas and equations are those just for that campus or do other campuses come to them those are district level programs so teachers from across the district can go now of course the teachers on that campus have the benefit of them being there but we schedule intentional math demo Labs every month where we bring teachers from across our sites to go visit and sometimes we'll do it where it may be a pocket of teachers from the same school and sometimes it's intentional we're bringing teachers from other schools so they can collaborate with teachers at other schools and sometimes that's really helpful because you know you get stuck in your relationships in your own ways and when you see other people who you don't normally get to work with they sometimes come with a different approach a different mindset and that's really healthy in really growing instructional practices so it's both can I ask a follow-up yes of course of course uh how are we ensuring that it's working so that's a great question so part of the work that we do is is our curriculum specialist has a lens of who is all going and we work we actually had our principles at a principal meeting uh in lieu of a principally we had them break up into groups where they went to go observe these math demo Labs as well so they got to see firsthand what this instruction looks like so we expect that when they're doing their classroom visitations especially in a math class they're looking for these kinds of shifts especially for those teachers who have participated in these these demo labs and of course as you know our evaluation process I know Brad and his team's done a marvelous job in building capacity the way that we evaluate staff but we've never looked at our evaluation process as a gotcha it's always intended to grow and improve practice so through that lens when our administrators walk in classrooms they're also looking through that lens of how do I grow how do I improve pedagogy and then we also try to leverage our professional learning late start time our plcs to grow those practices well and as teachers go they're then also expected to help grow and support their colleagues as they do that work and these if anything be a model to their colleagues when they're doing their work because they have their own site level reflective learning watch which isn't necessarily content specific it's more instructional connected but as people go into the classrooms they should be seeing the cpsf and that whole child approach even in a math class so that's where we're seeing that stuff improve thank you can I ask a question okay and I've got a question how many years have we been doing this is this the first year or no math has been several isn't it yeah so when we got the there's a block grant we got Joe I can't remember the official name of it but that was it's been probably about three or four years I know when the pandemic hit obviously we took a couple pause years but I think prior to the pandemic was probably two years maybe prior to the pandemic that we started this that's when we take the pause and then we'll continue it now we want to expand to the high schools okay so we pretty much got most of our Junior High Math teachers then that have been have we or I think because of Subs truthfully we probably haven't had all of our Math teachers no I know but we've had a decent amount because if we do them every single month sometimes twice a month you're getting between six and eight teachers each time to go okay to those walks so it does start to add up especially even though we may have 1300 teachers when you break it down by math we could have 200 Math teachers in the district so right our goal ultimately is to get more and more teachers to participate and see what could be and then have the support to make that shift themselves I think that's a great question though because right now it has been voluntary and um there are teachers that don't want could benefit from this you know so I think we are tracking that by sites this is based on a very successful model developed through uh correct Kelly Gallagher in the on the English language arts side so um you know it's uh it's voluntary I could tell you though the teachers who do participate have really appreciated the uh reflective learning that's going on in math absolutely okay and these just as another point of contacts is these are math demo teachers at the junior high especially this year given the work around the ptas or the performance task Assessments in our Capstone math has been one of those subject matters that has struggled more so than the other content areas with what a performance task looks like in math so I know they have been working on Mentor performance task assessments that they can use to share with other Math teachers and departments as they begin to build out their own ptas as well so they're serving as a as a leader and as a model in that regard as well okay okay um I had a question on goal one on the English learner reclassification rates um can you speak to how we're supporting uh that work on the site level yeah absolutely I'm gonna actually bring up Dr Renee Bryant she oversees our director of plural lingual Services multilingual Services she's going to speak because she's been leading a lot of the work with our site level El task force along which has worked in supporting our sites in that area so she's gonna go ahead and speak to that awesome well thank you for that important question um I think reclassification it is confusing a little bit when you just look at the numbers so if you allow me I first want to talk about the data a little bit so and the context of the assessment so um about 2015 we had the salt exam we moved to the lpac during that time they allowed us to choose our own criteria so if you look at the data we had about a thousand students we were able to reclassify because we were able to choose how we were going to reclassify them in the uh the test area of elpac if that makes sense because it wasn't fully operational they hadn't had the bands yet of the scores so now we are reclassifying I'm really proud that we were classified about 548 students this year last year was only 300 and something before that even less and so there's been this time of moving um you know they had the same saying of a moving Target so once they had the bands done they said you could reclassify any English learner at a level three or a level four that met the five criteria so there are the lpac scores there is the cast scores then there is parent input and teacher input and so um once they said three and four still great numbers and then there were some advocacy to change that to a four and they became even more difficult to reclassify the scholars so at this point if you're just looking at our data from 2017 to 2023 you see it goes from about a thousand students being reclassified to 500 it looks bad if you don't really understand the context right there's a story behind everything so that's a story in the context behind reclassification around the state not just for Anaheim Union and so how we are supporting our sites to be able to reclassify our Scholars is one we have our El task force that meets twice a year with every single site uh we also have our El admin El coordinator ELD chair meetings that we have once a month and so um as you know two years ago we rewrote uh the El PL master plan and So within there is all of the contacts it's kind of like our our El go-to book for any questions they have but we regularly have our teams come in for professional learning once a month we keep them up on the changing targets because that's what it is we had we had fpm last year I don't know if you remember that but we had our federal program monitoring and they also asked us to change things about our requirements there was a time where we allowed rationale and so we are not allowed to allow for rationale for reclassification anymore and so every year basically we do have to kind of re-teach people have to unlearn habits and then learn new ways of reclassification and so we support our teams again twice a year we go to the sites for pluralingual task force meetings we have our monthly El admin El coordinator meetings and then in the last two years because of the process of fpm and needing to have all of our data housed in one place we did thanks to you all adopt elevation as a data warehouse for ourselves a platform where it's very easy for all of our staff to be able to find information on our plural lingual Scholars and be able to reclassify them instead of lots of Google docs everywhere I know it was a lot of information but hopefully it makes sense yeah no that was helpful it's layered and it's a little complex yes well you're here remind me when we started the ELD certification and that process um in that process tell me a little bit more about that okay so on the on uh what slide is that where basic so at it but um 2021 21 22 there were the Miss assignments and it was the ELD reporting on that do you remember this is uh coming from HR so this is the El learner authorization so that's something that's been in place from what Scott Jensen had indicated to me because we hadn't shared this information at previous board means but I guess that report has always been there and this year when they gave us the data that was there too so even in SF we talked about like have you seen this before that's a processor's census window and it's a very short window and when they get the reports of whichever teachers need to complete or have not completed their authorization there's this very small window to get that done which often isn't enough time so we have to report it as a misassignment but then HR works with those teachers to get themselves cleared kind of like we did back in the day with the the cloud or the bcloud we had teachers who had to go through a process to get certified it's the same thing and it's nothing I haven't seen recently until this year when they gave us the data and we had to engage with HR to learn more about it but it's something we've been doing for quite some time thank you that's what we talk about that's effort thank you okay and just thank you for allowing me some Grace to be here late our curriculum specialist isn't hospitalized so I went to Fountain Valley to visit her so thank you for your grace thank you and then keep going okay and then uh one final question on goal two for engagement opportunities for all parents and families can you speak to how we are utilizing our existing spaces with our community schools and PTA meetings to get parents involved with the healthcare process with the lcat process yes so with the lcap process there's been a number of things that we've done to try to really increase just parent engagement as a whole and then I know at our coffee chats with the principals I know our ambassadors have gone out to Coffee chats uh as well there's a lot of talk around and a lot of information being given to our sites and our parents around the opportunity to engage in our lcap process I know that there's a number of things that our our parent engagement our family engagement team has been doing to try to increase access to parents you may recall for a lot of our parents to volunteer they have to be fingerprinted we're moving to the Raptor piece where they don't that will sometimes serves as a barrier for some families now with the Raptor they're going to be able to engage and be on campus more so some families don't come because they feel like they're not welcome because they they can't do the fingerprinting process the Raptor is going to eliminate that process so that's something we're moving towards also we have our parent leadership academy modules the the scope and sequence that's been developed by our faces our family community engagement Specialists and all of our campus that those modules have elements where there's more inclusivity and it's based upon the data that the faces have been collecting around their site so those modules have been really targeted to better meet the needs of the specific Community Based on the things they're asking for uh and then through that they inter they weave in the lcap process that this is the opportunity that if you see things you want or there are things in pla that are not in place that you want to place this is the opportunity to really engage in in and ask for these kinds of things so there's a lot of things that the site's been doing we've obviously done a lot to also improve access in terms of the I know with with Dr Bryant in the the translation Department making sure they have access to things in their home language so there's a lot of work that we've been doing to try to engage and really get families more connected to the work and the lcap process we yeah so for the survey it was sent out to all of our families in different languages and put into like our community schools and making sure they're sending that out as well yes and matter of fact and I know Maritza Bermudez is here because Mr Hernandez and her team are at a conference but I know the survey it's it's interesting the survey went out to our parents across the district with the community school approach but I know the community schools had a much higher rate of return than our non-community schools that didn't receive distinction that's obviously there's a huge staff implication for those schools that got the money they have a community school coordinator Community School teacher lead so there was way more intentional effort because of the staff dedicated that work in helping to promote the survey and get that response back got it thank you Miss Percy nope not Miss Smith I have just an observation it's just so interesting to see the history of education and how Trends occur and they become popular and then they go down and then some other Trend comes up and something else is lowered and I've seen this historically and just the example of at memorizing numbers for math and then calculators came in and now colleges are teaching young students to come out and teach math by the standards of what they're teaching so it's just interesting I think for the general public to understand it's like medicine it just has ups and downs and plateaus and Trends and this is a wonderful example that you all got tonight thank you um I really appreciated hearing about um taking steps with professional learning humbling and taking that reflective look and how we're engaging our teachers and teaching our teachers I appreciate hearing about that um on the Capstone program you have it in as areas of growth what were some of the challenges and what were some of the triumphs okay great question uh so I would I'm going to start with the the triumphs because we want to start with acid-based so you know we have been trying I think for a number of years to to really take the scale our Capstone program that we learned about at Savannah and then Western and where have begun I think a Triumph is that all of our schools participated in capsules this year this year was the year we all did the work and did and I participated in you know multiple multiple Capstone program interviews and showcases and to see our students sharing how education worked for them how the content they were engaging in classrooms became more relevant and meaningful and connected to their own lives you know seeing students ask less and less why do I have to learn this I don't want to be they're not asking because they see the connection with the skills and how they're transferable no matter what path they choose I think it was fascinating and it was is a definite Triumph is I know our Ed staff team knows that every year we engage with our site leadership teams twice a year formally through what's called our spsa reviews our single plan for student achievement reviews and often at those meetings and there are great meetings and there's protocols that we run and we engage with their team but often we're faced with or we're encountering barriers right their perceived barriers why kids can't do certain things and this year I'm just so proud that when we're engaging with our sites at our reviews you never heard students can't do or this won't work they were working intelligently and intentionally to make this real and there was a belief that our students can do this and we saw firsthand that our students did do it and even though it was year one and we clearly have rooms for growth there was a lot to celebrate and the quality of what we saw was fantastic Mr matsuda yeah I'd like to add too I think a major Triumph was to have so many parents involved in the process and so many parents affirming their children and their children's voice and I think that's really really a Triumph affirming the the work of the teachers too absolutely now the other Triumph I want to share which also will lead to the next part of your question that the challenges is our performance task assessments uh one of our asks this year was for every single teacher to have a minimum of two performance task assessments maybe one first semester one second semester but at least two and the goal was and even though we gave them professional learning and we gave them documents on the guidelines of a performance task what should be and should be in a PTA the goal was just do it right just get it done right because the challenge this year is there were some performance task assessments that were fantastic they were incredibly engaging they were aligned to I'm pointing like the screen they were lying to our cpsf circles right you saw aspects where students voice were being elevated it was connected to their own their own passions and own interests you saw the skills coming out in the instruction where students were growing in their collaborative skills and their critical thinking skills and their ability to think out of the box being be creative as an example and you also saw it connected to content right the the standards and the things that we would be expected to do otherwise so a lot to celebrate in the work that was done with our ptas but likewise there's a lot of work to do to grow and improve upon our ptas right connected to applied learning right we really want to say like like Miss Smith just said all the content is here now right how do we teach our students to apply and use it and that's part of what a PTA which is a performance task asks our students to do to apply their learning so that's also a growth area for us as well yeah so I just want to make it clear the ptas are really really important because that's for all teachers throughout all content all six years right twice at least twice a year the Capstone is eighth and 12th grade and the students are selecting their best ptas over the course of two years or four years so that's why the the ptas are so important because that forms the grounding for for the Capstone absolutely and the goal I mean just to do simple math if a student for example is in high school and they're getting a minimum of two ptas a year per class and they have six classes well that's 12 performance task assessments are getting their freshman year and that's another 12 their sophomore year by the time they're a senior they will have had 48 at a minimum performance task if they started with us in junior high add now seven times two for two years so you can see by the time they leave us the skills that we're trying to really integrate make sure education works for them plus their voice and passion and purpose they're going to leave with agency they're going to leave knowing who they are how they fit and how they can create a better world through the unlimited you so that's the goal and the tension is these ptas although there may be only two a year how are these performance tasks and the lesson design connected to that improving instruction each and every day so it's not just these ptas it's all things are getting in between so I want to make another thing clear too the form performance tasks are the Gateway into the community in terms of Applied problem solving from food deserts to mental health to issues of branding regarding Anaheim high school that was a performance task and students were bringing that teachers were bringing that into the classroom so so where students were engaging on these really controversial issues and forming their own opinions and and Views based on the research so that's really an important thing right because over time you're going to have more and more students aware of these issues connecting the dots and holding us accountable what whatever their issue is so that's that's what we're trying to do is build a new way of Applied learning and problem solving so does that answer question challenges and triumphs yeah we still have work to do for sure but we're proud of where we begin yeah I have a couple questions on the California School uh dashboard there were there were two areas there were the six uh State indicators and the 505 local indicators the state indicators are obviously that's Statewide State priorities how are the five local indicators chosen is that the same for every or do we decide that or those are consistent across the districts but then we have to localize it to like our district and our needs okay so yeah the implementation of State Standards is an example every school district across the state is expected to talk and reflect on how they're implementing state standards as a local indicator good thank you um going back to our our goal number one if I'm reading correctly it says the a through G completion the desired outcome is lower than um past why are we looking at lower standards on page 23 of this book I'm looking at it says the district goal is 55 percent and the year two outcome was 55.9 so we dropped uh 0.9 percent as as our goal I would think we'd be wanting to increase our a through G completion rate that's not a goal isn't that the outcome that's that's I'm trying to trying to understand this okay is page 23 said yeah page 23 that wasn't that the outcome and not the goal so we met this is desired outcome for 23 24 district is 55 for AG completion rate and then it says in year two it says that the desired outcome was 55.9 so am I interpreting it correctly is showing that we're we're Desiring a lesser outcome than previous year oh I see what you're saying yeah are you looking at like I'm looking at Baseline 52.8 and 52.
