thank you um let's all rise to the Pledge of Allegiance that the United States thank you all right let's go let's call the meeting to order thank you all for being here I feel like you've been gone for a long time but it's only been a month hiding to start a new school year um so are there any modifications to the agenda no and do we have anyone from the audience who wishes to speak apparently speaking tonight oh I didn't know if you were picking up the little piece of paper we just came oh okay yes if you want to speak yes okay and if there's anyone else who wants to speak if you'll just fill out the paper for us it helps us do it the same way everything all right Claire from the PTO we just wanted to say uh thank you for all your great work last school year and I think we've done a great accomplishment in a sense that we uh brought all the attention to the importance of referendum and also the awareness of local support the clarification and Confirmation local support through the PTO concert so at me of parents and teachers are trying really hard to take momentum and this momentum go so we just like to let you know that we are really ready to support another New Years and definitely uh uh we are supporting the Supreme Family Tracy uh we just uh read this article that she kind of like indicated that she's running for next May uh referendum so I think that is so we want to really want to know that that's what everyone is crucial to go next May election and also is any specific plan that you can be aware of and take it yes absolutely um thank you a person and foremost for the support and continued support um the Democrat did make it an error in the newspaper um the board has to officially approve on a rate um uh to put something on that ballot so up until that board approval vote we will be seeking support in informing the community and our parents and our staff um and getting some input on what that rate should be so I just want everybody to know that the board does have to officially and then we can officially say it will be on the ballot in May of 2010 um we will be our leadership team is meeting um in the next two weeks and that's that's the first bullet item on the list is um to start talking about where we at our app financially and how we're going to start to get to community meetings and um how we get people parents to come in and be a part of so and there are State deadlines that we do that on so it's all very regimented about you must do this by this date you must do this by this date which is why we we don't do it now we will do it as it's prescribed so it isn't that we're delaying on this um there's a calendar that you have to learn all right anyone else from the audience all right let's go into presentations we have one tonight from Chartwells and I know we have our Chartwells Representatives here for food service so I will turn the floor over to you great thank you absolutely so thank you very much so thank you uh my name is director for children's K-12 um Don Heimer is your food service director he's your onset food service director on the Paula Waterman who's the SFA food service director um so you know it was great I was very appreciative of of our superintendent Tracy for asking us to come and kind of give an overview of food service I think that a lot of times school boards don't really understand what we do except that you feed children right and we have a lot of quirky quirky rules and people don't understand it sometimes they think it's just us being you know difficult and so what I have always found is that it's really good to just be transparent and kind of help educate the board especially as transitions happen just to really understand that you know you're on the national school lunch program what does that mean what what is the meaning of all of these acronyms how is it Finance how does the finances work um because it works very differently in your school Food Service fund versus the rest of your funds and for budgeting purpose so on and so forth so we're going to give a basically a foundation you know an overview of food service we're going to talk about our achievements this year uh and then kind of what what's next what's to come so who's Charlotte's right I think that's a big thing people don't really understand um you know what our role is and kind of who we are so um we've we're now at 40 districts when I made this PowerPoint probably a month or two ago we were at 38 now we're at 40.

bases going in and we'll be ready for stone and asphalt LC pool continues on the base uh area for locker rooms and meeting rooms going in as well as a large portion of the building with the roof almost complete Ln site work here you'll see the softball field on the far right the soccer field in the middle and Dwight and the new baseball stadium going in on the left and then above the soccer is the new parking lot that will support that area Ellen bandlot has been paved and we continue to work around the southwest and Northwest side of the building along with the next line the new Plaza area going in that'll give us access to door six and seven new athletic area the bleachers we're in second floor where the wrestling room used to be and then the weight room new flooring and painting going on there Ellen pool continues a lot of tile work going on but they are progressing forward with that Belzer uh the auditorium Footers are going in also to the right there you'll see an underground retention Pond and that'll be covered up starting tomorrow and pavement prior to school starting those are Media Center continues on a lot of work in there classrooms and hallways we will uh what is it we will check those out this week and next and move those in in a week and a half ready for school to start main office likewise and Fall Creek the new Special Needs Bus drop-off area has Stone in it now so asphalt is just behind it they're finishing up the concrete this week in Fall Creek Valley classrooms and hallways they'll punch these classrooms this week and move in next likewise the media center continues on uh here at lecc the North lot that's a new parking lot above our north parking lot as being cut in and ready for Curbing and lights and LC side improvements continue on on our West Side as well as our north side Force Glenn we're almost finished there we will be moving in for them to set up their classrooms next week uh the ramps and stairways are going in this week pretty excited fields excuse me pardon me when we were given the land for the fields at Lawrence Central how many acres of trees were we able to save by being judicious about how we placed our fields we purchased 20 acres and we have cleared less than 10 acres for the three Fields it's a beautiful are we consciously doing anything to plant trees around the district to replace some of those trees we will and there are certain guidelines based off of the state requirements that we take down certain trees we have to replace certain trees so that is in the plan to plant other trees and that could be on other sites where we have Open Fields to do that so it can be throughout the district but we will we will have those lovely trees back um I I just I just look at this and I realize Lawrence Township doesn't mess around when it comes to construction boom boom boom boom summer looks Summer's looking good uh comments questions I have a question for the Forest Glen Portables what are the age or what are the Grays that will occupy those uh sixth grade thank you I had just a question from a couple of people in the public they were inquiring about when the outside would be completed at Lawrence North the three-story facade just people driving by curious we have had a little bit of delay on some of the exterior facade going up but it currently is is here so we'll put it up as quickly as weather allows thank you on the first one question from about plans for that because obviously the school underwent Renovations in order to adjust for capacity what are our plans for or do we have plans for moving students out of those at some point given the eventually we would like to add on to Forest Glen to allow them to have a permanent site there as you remember we added some programs there that increased the size of that building so therefore pushed us into portables for a temporary means thank you for your continued efforts it is incredible to see all the incredible work that is going on in our schools I have a couple of questions the first is related to sustainability and so um when we think about what our school board or what our schools are doing for sustainability in our buildings um are there any sort of sustainability plans as it pertains to reducing emissions and so forth we have upgraded from a technological standpoint our HVAC systems they're all electronic and we control them from a district level so that gives us optimization opportunities within our facilities also licensers oxygen sensors are also placed in so if no one's in a room the lights go out and as you walk in the lights go on so we put a lot of that technology in our buildings also all the light is LED lighting excellent I was floor hard surface versus carpet we moved to that especially in the hallways so sustainability and Longevity will help us with our flooring as well that's when I was recently at a convening for school board members across the country and Batesville School District in Arkansas implemented facility upgrades and installed solar energy products they use the resulting energy cost savings to increase teacher salaries by up to fifteen thousand dollars and so there's just some really amazing work that's being done across the country um with we know especially in these times with climate change and seeing these radically high temperatures it'd be interesting to see what other measures we might be able to take so thank you and then the other question was about the media centers are the media centers going to be up and running at the beginning of the school year at both Fall Creek and Bowser uh Belzer will not we usually find a place for them to temporary temporarily run their Media Center so as we renovate finish up we move them in and move to another section of the building so they'll still have access to the shared system yes okay and is there any type of through this process an opportunity for us to look at Collections and to call anything that might be outdated or is that something that's ongoing that does not fall under construction that's under curriculum that's an ongoing process okay thank you yes that's an ongoing process okay thank you so much thank you Mr Smith we appreciate uh everything you're doing for us uh now I am going to um stay with you Mr Smith um you have you have you you will request permission later to to bid on the Lawrence North roof can you present that to us please thank you madam president members board Dr Smith we're looking at risk sections two and three at Lawrence North that is over the Performing Arts and exceptional learning areas we've had a lot of traffic on that area because we've had to replace all the equipment in the mezzanine and now that we are complete with the mezzanine work we would like to replace those roofs so I'll be seeking permission to bid roofs sections two and three for Lawrence North board Smith about the roofs my question is was this an unexpected expense yes and no okay part of that was is we was hoping to get a couple more years out of the roof but knowing that traffic using that as a pathway for the renovation of the mezzanine uh we've been having some issues and we need to drive the building so we pushed that up a little bit to go ahead and replace those roofs so do we have in our funds from the referendum how are we funding this from the referendum yes we have some opportunities to transfer some monies short term and and work off of future future Bond projects okay thank you thank you very much any more questions about the we never get to see the roof you know we take tours of the buildings we never get to see the roof should we try the we'll do a drone shot did we try praying for Hail like I do for the Lawrence household roof um when we okay just just a little tiny marble tiny well now this this next on our agenda is very exciting um can you please tell us about our student achievement part two sure thank you madam president members of the board and Dr Smith I bring to you tonight an update uh to your board goal specific to iLearn assessments so the data was unembargoed last Wednesday after the presentation to the State Board of Education and so we are now able to discuss it publicly and just as a reminder your board goal is an ambitious board goal to increase by 10 percent the number of students that are designated as approaching at or above proficiency so this is really looking at Proficiency in every subgroup another way to look at it is decrease by 10 percent the number of students that are scoring in the lowest category which is below proficiency so specific to language arts 10 of our 13 schools had individual subgroups school-wide that met the 10 percent growth goal in ela and you can see the specific subgroups for those 10 schools we had three schools that school-wide for our black subgroup two for white one Hispanic three English learner two multiracial and one free and reduced when you go a layer lower and you don't look school-wide but you look at specific grade levels then we had 147 individual grade levels or grade level cohorts that met that 10 percent growth goal in ela and then you can see how that breaks out demographically and so what's particularly encouraging about this different than last year's data last year our White subgroup had the highest growth in terms of the 10 percent this year it's our Black and Hispanic subgroup so that is a really good into education for the progress that we're making at that individual grade level or cohort within a school it's also important to look at proficiency so this is students that have scored in that proficient range on iLearn and what I have for you is three years of data 21 22 23 so looking at our post pandemic data by subgroup you can see your total number tested and so this is an important number for us to continue to monitor as we're looking at demographic changes within our student population and then it also shows you the percent proficient in each of our subgroups and so that last column is the change from 21 to 23 and so you can see positive growth and this is a little different than you what you might have seen on the news for the entire state or even in Marion County for ELA Statewide the the growth was pretty stagnant in terms of proficiency we continue to see proficiency growth in La for each of our subgroups from 21 to 22 and then 22 to 23.

seconded in a second we just need to vote all in favor aye passes unanimously thank you and next um we have organization of the committee and I first want to say Mr Kiley is thankfully not here he's taken some time um off well deserved and I and so this is when we have to officially sort of uh appoint our new superintendent as Secretary of the school committee but of course it's not without thanking Mr Kiley who's not here but for just his graciousness his uh leadership his uh time and commitment and in all the ways um I don't know if I my fellow committee members wanted to also add to that no it's not I thank you mad I'm sure there's not much not much to add to to what you did he stepped into a fantastic job you know kept the district together and you know held it held it all and you know while wearing multiple hats and such and uh I'm not sure I know he's on vacation and you know I'm not sure if just for Grins and Giggles he's got his laptop and he's watching this but in all seriousness uh sincere thank you to uh to Jim for uh for what he did so with go ahead I'm sorry no I mean I I would agree right I hope he's not watching I hope he's not here I hope he's not reading emails right otherwise we have to teach him how to do vacation but I am uh very grateful to to all the work that he did during a a difficult budget year and um also you know having that additional load on top of that was a lot of work and um I appreciate it right yeah I'll just uh send lots of accolades his way for all his work um not only the budget but I'll also uh put in there as well contract negotiations um that were a long and draining um so thrilled that he was able to move that along and uh essentially give a fresh plate to uh like to save a McGuire for her incoming challenges so for to take on some other things so yeah no uh just a big thank you to Jim for all the work that he's done in stepping up denomination point Dr June Saban Maguire as the secretary oh second um any other additional discuss I'm excited we're excited to have you excited I have a few things to say great great um so do we just vote on that um [Music] wonderful thank you so I will turn it over to to you so wonderful I am incredibly excited to be here with you this evening in my role as your Dartmouth School Superintendent I do have to say the last few weeks and I even have to say a few months um since I've been appointed I've been incredibly fortunate to have an onboarding experience because the role was not open Mr Kylie was feeling it well um but I had a chance to move into my office thanks to the technology department set me up really well so I started I really would consider that I hit the ground running but I also want to say from Spring to the close of the school year I was connected to Dartmouth email right away part of a lot of the school groups including the Quinn school so I got to see a lot of the happenings that were going on really across the district at all of your schools and what I considered to be the celebratory nature of the closing of schools here in Dartmouth I got to visit the Special Olympics and again that's not just a community event but it's certainly an area Community event and it was well attended the students were so happy excited to be be part of that your staff was out there really working with your students and it was just you can tell again when I talk about the nature the celebratory nature of what was happening here in the district I also got to go to the Dartmouth graduation um as a spectator wonderful I have to say when I heard it was in the gym I was a little bit skeptical but walking into the gymnasium that day it was truly transformed and it was in fact a truly spectacular really event for the students who we were honoring so I want to take a minute to congratulate the Dartmouth students in the class of 2023 and we're certainly looking forward to the school district to hear about your successes so there are a couple of Staffing updates that I wanted to bring to your attention under teaching and learning one is that we've hired very few individuals there aren't um there aren't a lot of openings here in the Dartmouth public schools and you should be happy and proud about that because that means people want to stay so you've hired an occupational therapist at the district level an ell teacher for the Potter School two new point a new I'm sorry not two new 8.2 physical therapist position that will be split between Potter and Cushman and you've also hired a special education Pals teacher for Dartmouth middle school and so many of those folks that I'm talking about are a few anyway came right from within your own district and I think that that again is telling about what the school district has to offer that people want to return and work here and so at the last meeting there was mention of the summer academies and the summer programming the summer programs are up and running and in fact as um as as Miss paveo will come up and talk to you and and Mr um and Ross I'm sorry Ross they're going to talk to you I know you're I know your name Ross I just yeah so anyway we were awarded a 126 thousand dollar Grant and this is going to allow us to run some programming in August that you're going to hear more about but in addition you have school year programs that are up and running I was at the high school this morning kid lots of students coming in through the doors again looking happy to be here in the summer walking through the doors of the high school and your staff was welcoming and it sounds to me like they are going to have a really successful summer program but I am going to invite Katie and Ross to come up and give an overview of not only what's happening in the summer but also they talked about the the uh the summer curriculum Summit or the end of the year curriculum Summit that they had with with many of the faculty members here hello happy summer first um so uh we were asked to kind of provide an update on a couple of different things the first one being our summer school programming so at the high school level we have um uh credit recovery program going on where we're able to provide kind of a safety net for students who maybe did not do as well as they hoped they would have done during the school year and to recover credits so they don't uh fall behind we have 74 students currently in that program enrolled in 128 different courses we have four teachers and one coordinator so it is a very lean staff but they do a tremendous job of of helping us to meet our students academic needs as I said so that they don't become over age and unaccredited oh sorry one other thing prior to that we already also I had an enrichment program the robotics program was the last week of June first week of July and that served about 50 Elementary Middle School students who came learned a little bit about robotics had some fun uh building the robotics themselves and the nice thing about that program is that although we have Mr Brodsky and Mr Lauer who kind of over you know oversee the program it's really led by our high school robotics students they really take the lead they organize the camp they do the teaching and it's it's really a phenomenal experience and we're proud of them so I will talk a little bit about our extended year program in the special education office uh our new director of student services is at a special ed conference today so I am going to do my best to talk a little bit about that program um as well as the academic summer school program which is we brought back this year for the first time since pre-covid recognizing the need for our kids who you know really help prevent some of that summer slide we have um what was the number 264 students participating in both our esy and academic summer school program they are a combination of four day and five day programs our kids who are in Pals and past are here for an additional day for a 5D program the rest of our munchkins are here four days a week from 8 30 to 12 30.

um and then some of the staff members later saying like no I am not on Pace whereas where I was last year so um coming into the fall this year they're gonna they're gonna have a reference point where um there there will be more actionable comments that I get probably from this fall versus last fall because everyone was kind of going through it for the first time do you have any um tools that allow you to measure how students are utilizing the resource period say you want to increase the utilization by students the resource Group do we have any tools that track how students are actually utilizing resource period whether they're going to a counselor going to a teacher or involving themselves in these small group studies it would be nice if we had a way of measuring that to see a steady growth of utilization of the resource period by our students in those examples yeah I mean I think that they do track when someone goes into the counseling office there is some kind of kind of like a scanning kind of thing the SAT program is by sign up and so that one that will be easy to track um the res that the student sort of generated study groups that we plan on doing a survey for fresh and sophomores asking like if you were to join a study group like what what subject would you be most interested in who's your teacher for that subject you know give us a scale of one to ten about how confident you are with that subject would you be interested in being a leader of that and so I think teachers will be able to see who's in a study group um and as as that kind of gathers steam I think we'll know also from staff whether or not their students are so I would I would think that that would roll into the survey about you know how like how much of your students used study groups and also for students um but also I think that's also going to be anecdotally the difference of like walking around like our Juniors and seniors choosing [Music] study groups rather than late arrival or early dismissal during that resource time that that will also be a pretty good indicator of yes they're seeing value in that and value enough that instead of going home that they are staying here yeah I would just point out that um a lot of the way we're going to measure success is anecdotally and through surveys but if there's anything that can be done to provide data to suggest that this schedule is is improving the overall academic experience of our students I would strongly suggest that you do whatever you can to track that data and bring it back to the board so that we can see that and be assured that there is some actual data Beyond just survey and anecdotal but qualitative data is data I you're right here is it is but it's like that's legitimate educational research data it's what we use in our profession a great deal of programming I'm just saying um any hard data that's truly measurable what would you is it like what would you want to see measure your self-choice and get it like get a pass for to go here or pass to go there yeah that's what I'm that's what I'm suggesting I mean we'll have 17 students chose to go to you know Mr X's office hours or you know is does that program capture um so the flexible scheduling software right now we're just going to start off by using for student Choice which is you know runs during access um and partially it's because I don't want to overwhelm the staff within a another program to start the year um and so um I did choose to do sort of a slow roll into it I would say the intervention committee that we did have a longer conversation about do you we just pull the Band-Aid off and like we're going to use this for office hours we're going to use this for student choice we're going to use this for Student Success a support with the past all of that um and um based on sort of where the staff was when we left in the spring I don't think that's a good idea um to start the year although um I if if the staff feels like yeah no this is it's super easy to take attendance in which it is um and students are getting used to it um and it is it does show like I invited the student to office hour and I can mark the attendance about whether or not they showed up um and I can they showed I sent a pass to the student and yes they attended but they were attended and inactive that you can get that minute with the with the data on it so I do think that as students get used to it that will increase it and then we'll be able to look at those numbers that way because also um you know our plan is to open that on Sunday evening so that you know families are at home and they're like planning their week that they can that's something that they can do together or like choosing things also the staff have the opportunity to choose students before so like if they need to see them that they can choose them rather than students choosing for themselves which I think will also be a good data point of how many students were chosen by their teachers versus the students made a choice in that software so we do have passes that are in triplicate form and we do you know track that um and uh but I think sometimes the data is only good as good as it being inputted by the staff member and so we're one of the reasons that we talked about streamlining it into all of those other things is the staff would only have one spot for it and then all of the data could be collected from there so I think I foresee it being used in more facets in the spring but I don't want to start off with it in the fall until I can like Train everybody on it I know all the kids have the app all that kind of stuff fair enough I think we the qualitative data though the fact that we're going to have a very similar survey in the fall and the spring that we had this last spring based on what we learned in the fall we'll provide some quantitative look at qualitative experiences like are we seeing are we seeing the overall experience in these measures that we're using trending in the direction that we want to see them Trend yeah and well the well the the plan be that the the access teachers remain like stay with the same kids that's as much as possible I mean we might be able to get a little bit more from the teachers that have now you know gone over a year with the same group yeah they're not starting from scratch um so this the the teachers who had seniors now we'll start with freshmen um and so we did have a good perspective of a freshman access teacher at South who was going to his second year and he talked about how can we make sure that I can continue to build a relationships with these students or talked about at the end of the year like I wish there was a closure day because I tried to build relationships with the kids all year and then there were also teachers there that were leaving their senior access and starting over a freshman and so they were very invested in the schedule and the lesson formats and everything making sure that their freshmen were going to get off to a good start knowing that they were going to be with them for four years and so it was valuable to have the two perspectives on the same room for sure is there a flexibility in the program so mid-year from the first survey we see things that we could adjust or fine-tune to improve it do we have the flexibility to be able to do that yeah I mean like I so the program allows me to like run like three or four different alternate schedules so um the first time we ran student Choice it was um a mixture of academic and like you know open gym or like Puzzles and Games in the library um and so we do have the possibility of like uh having a schedule that specifically like teachers as we're wine as we're getting towards final exams what would you like listed on the student Choice schedule as we near that and that could be schedule one um this is I can have one that's only academics I can have one that has more student Choice like fun options or or a mixture of both um and so I think that you know as we do things during the year we we may be pulling from different schedules um last year I made uh sort of I sort of laid everything out for staff and I had Department chairs looked at it this year staff members are going to put you know for each different schedule what they would like listed and so I think that the staff will appreciate that as well I know that I know the students like the student Choice day and now that we'll get over the tech component I think it will take off and I sort of foresee this being more of the model for Access um than that cool I applaud you for forming the Committees and addressing the issues and I really like the idea of those committees staying on during the school year so that as you are walking the buildings and getting the feedback you can take those back to the Committees and continue to evolve and work on the schedule and find tuna thanks yeah and I think the part uh you know the in the the access or in the um the survey for staff they'll probably be an open-end question is there something that you would like any of the Committees to talk about you know as we're going into the year so that they have an opportunity if I mean they know who the committee members are because they'll be presenting to them in the fall and they know who I am but um sometimes they just need a spot to write that down in case they haven't attacked any of us so that's likely going to be a question in the survey for the fall cool and as the board will see in the OR is seen in the goals that are out there through our HR department with Rob we're doing a whole other staff feedback loop as well so between those two working independent of one another I imagine that they'll be crossover that comes up in those two opportunities for staff feedback we talked about the kids a lot but when you mentioned that in the fall last year some of the teachers felt like they were behind is there going to be like a way to for them to reach out or to say I don't I still don't feel like I'm oh yeah oh yeah no for sure yes I mean I think that that the you know the questions in the survey I I'll there I made adjustments to the spring survey based on hearing how things were going and what people were concerned about um and uh giving them the staff like sort of the checkbox list of like is this still a concern for you or is this not helped some staff members who didn't want to write a narrative um but also that they could do those of these are still strengths for me these are still weaknesses and um you know I think it was what one third of the staff who did the check boxes also did open response I think there were 90 um so adjustment for yes for everybody for sure yes I agree all right any other questions on those all right obviously there's a lot going on across the district a lot of facilities work a lot of getting buildings and stuff ready everybody in their individual uh aspects that are working all summer working on their branches of the organization but then across the whole administrative team I've shared this with the board but just to go through all we're all at the table together really we've spent June in the beginning of July drafting goals and tasks those are being presented to the board next tonight determining out of those goals and tasks what work do we have to do over the summer to be ready for everybody to come back tonight we'll together review those draft goals and tasks and see if there's if we've captured everything that the board thinks that we should be working on next year then tomorrow we come together is an administrative team to look at those based on your feedback tonight and continue our working for those first day back first days back the welcome back and and the three days that staff have to work before students show up um Wednesday the assistant superintendents principals and I uh will start mapping out the entire year of Team meetings uh what's going to happen and what our activities are with leadership and when we plan on bringing updates to the board on those goals and tasks throughout the rest of the year then August what is that second I keep messing up those August dates August 2nd the leadership team is coming together for half a day to just work on those three days back making sure that we have our schedules our presentations everything ready to go the 11th and 14th it's the Ryan mentioned DLT that's our district leadership team that's all the administrators and Department chairs will be working together on a variety of planning to come back preview of opening days we review some of the like staff discipline things for that the union leadership is coming in from both bargaining units to spend an afternoon with us to look at like just staff procedures and discipline and how all of that works so that we're all on the same page and then uh we we kick off the school year with opening days and then shortly after that students are back so yeah you know we're we're really progressing well we have this document that's our summer work document that we'll be revisiting with the team tomorrow which has been really nice to just so everybody can have an eye on what everybody is doing um uh there's been a lot of work over the the first kind of six weeks of the summer so we have I don't know about six weeks left we're about the Midway Point uh right now so I after we have our next conversation we'll have a better idea of where we're at uh we'll uh come back and get all of those goals and tasks approved by you in August but um we had a lot of work to do before everybody gets back so uh questions on on anything that was presented uh so far I just can't believe it's going so fast it always does it just seems like yesterday it was graduation all right um so the next piece as I mentioned is the Strategic road map which is the goals and tasks inside of this uh just as a reminder last year the board approved a new strategic plan with our mission and vision I bolded a few of the key Concepts in each of those for you but really you know the idea of preparing students for the future of their choosing and their ability to realize their potential and positively impact those around them is really the heart of what we're doing in District 99 inside of that we support this with the values that were established as part of the Strategic plan our opening day opening days for our staff are really going to be structured around those five values so everything that we present on those first couple of days we are tying that work back into that and then inside of all of that we have our strategic directions and strategic expectations so what I've done for the board here obviously you've all been provided this in advance I'm not planning on reading this all to you as I know you all know how to read what I've tried to do for you and for those that are reviewing this you know that might be tuning in or watching this later to get the overall gist of what's Happening inside of here is to list under on on each page here kind of grouped some key themes that are happening under those strategic Direction which is an equitable and supportive environment the Strategic expectation is that bolded first uh first row and to ensure a safe and sustainable opportunities for all students families including access to District resources the lines under that are all of the pieces that we've shared with the board that we're going to do and we've started to draft out what that actually means for each of those things the work we're doing inside of that as well so uh that's kind of the format that I've used to present it to you so in this first one really this is a lot of what Ryan talked about today with the access and resource pieces um this is the idea of our support student accountability you know the state accountability around Student Success making sure that we have safe environments inclusive environments that our Communications support that and that we're looking for feedback to determine if we're doing those well so I that's kind of what I'm going to give you on each slide if there's anything that a board member wants to pull out anything you want to Wordsmith in this this is your an opportunity here with everybody at the table obviously we'll continue to listen to feedback from now until when we come back at the workshop in August so you know you see something today and it's kind of gnawing at you and then you want to reach out and talk to me or Don or both of us about something we'll continue to listen uh for the next month and there will next what three weeks whatever it is and then we'll come back uh at the August workshop and ask you to approve these as our goals for the next year so questions and process or how this works is there anything on this under insure a safe and sustainable opportunities for all students families including access to District resources that any board member would like to has a question on or would like changed or for us to consider and I know I've just you know for those in the audience are watching at home board members have offered stuff you know asynchronously up until this point but this is our first opportunity for everybody at the table if there was something are we still going to sort of do that where we kind of want everyone to get involved into extracurricular activities of some sort absolutely yeah yeah the goal is that everybody's involved in two at some point during their High School career yeah all right uh the next couple uh really the themes on these in this uh slide in these two groups are attendance and discipline that we know have have not returned to pre-pandemic levels uh just making sure we have clear expectations the work around access and resource periods that Ryan was referencing earlier really connected to this is the idea of reaching out to families and sharing expectations with them and then the idea of those values of care trust and belonging and once again how our facilities can help support all of those things is there anything in here that anybody would like to pull out and discuss I think it's a great idea to try to recognize students who are having perfect attendance and making the choice to be at those when they could choose to leave I think recognizing the attendance you know as being an issue is a step in the right direction and I'm sure your administrative team will formalize ideas how to address that yep yeah attendance has been a interesting thing for a lot of years for a lot of things but uh that in particular you think you noticed an improvement as last year went on or not as much as you would have liked it's hard to say you know for some students yes for other students know as a whole we know that chronic absenteeism is up in District 99 it's up in other areas where better than some places worse than others I mean it's uh you know it's just it's a hard thing to wrap your arms around I think just year over year students getting back into the habit of we go to school every day will help us but we know that the whole like how people attend work and how they think about the workplace how families think about what how they value their time and what their children are doing has changed uh post pandemic and you know we do a lot to support students when they aren't here and some students as Ryan mentioned because of that can be successful and not be here but helping students understand their not and their families understand they're not getting the full Rich experience we offer when they aren't here like they might be able to get a grade that they're satisfied with but they're not getting the full experience of District 99 offers if they're not here with us are you finding that there's a lot of students that still want to remote learn not so much but I think the idea of missing a day or two or twelve is not as big of a risk families don't see that as big of a priority uh of being here every day is what we saw in the past hmm it's a shame it's a real shame we'll see if the if they changed forever or if this is a short-term well I think as you said though um I think the workforce is finding that same uh happy medium because some are requiring everyone to come to work again and they're not liking that so that's that's a very uh interesting call yep so I mean we're we are part of society so you know whatever's happening in society is happening within our walls so well if students see their parents having that same struggle they may have it too just because of the environment that they're in well I mean before I mean schools also have always served an aspect of child care and you know you send kids off to school so you can go to work but if you're working from home I mean it just all these Dynamics factor into what's going on you know so yeah we know that the best experience we can offer students is that when they're they're here with our teachers really important takeaway too as having like a soon to be college student like that's that's the message I want yeah showing up is important yeah yes best experience that you're gonna get is if you are physically but then a lot of a lot of the universities are offering um remote learning so it's I know it's difficult that's a fine line that you want we have to tread right yeah we're all gonna have to navigate this if you sit there in person yeah yeah this is all the the kind of new world we're in with different expectations and things are shifting and we got to keep a close eye on it but especially for a student where it is we can demonstrate that it's impacting them negatively those are going to be like our our top priority but we want to encourage kids to be here with us yeah not only that it's important for their socialization skills absolutely they're not going to get bad uh any other way than human interaction you mean they're not going to get it on this unfortunately not [Laughter] yeah all right anything else on this one um in the building Community section talk about reviewing and evaluating student and parent Outreach opportunities and I think we've talked about this um is potentially involving the board and ways of outreaching to the community as well and I'm just wondering if we should potentially maybe edit that first statement to include the board in participation with different Community opportunities I have that it's sitting down in one of the other ones but it it is it is in our activities yeah okay um I can't remember which one I have to go into the details but definitely increasing opportunities for the board to interact uh it's in our work okay thank you uh and I I shared a document with the board this last week if you have any yeah I had a chance to go at it of some of the things that the communications team and I are looking at to provide additional Outreach opportunities for board members and that was much appreciated uh let's see uh the next one uh really is the the keys around social emotional learning this is the work that comes in every setting but is supported greatly from our counseling department but social emotional learning should be present in every classroom every interaction that we have with students and staff some of this is just helping to continue to grow our own skills as Educators in those areas some of it's around our practices and processes and making sure that we are putting in practices that support students and families and making sure that we all have the skills as the adults to do that um the idea of you know when we look at discipline what is the appropriate level of discipline are we uh are we assigning that equitably fairly appropriately are we looking at discipline as a lens that it's a teaching opportunity that's what we are here to do is to teach if a student is deficient in math we help them get better at math if they are deficient in how they are behaving we should be working at getting their behavior better um you know it shouldn't just be about punishing students it needs to be about teaching students and making sure that they understand how their discipline impacts their outcomes those around them and how to make better decisions moving forward that's why we've invested greatly in the idea of our path program and those kinds of things moving forward so but that you know that's every interaction that we have with kids when they aren't you know very small behaviors not doing what we would hope that they would do all the way to the you know the largest levels of misbehavior how do we work through that to make that the most positive learning experience it can be while still maintaining a safe learning environment so that others can learn that how do we balance that so that's a lot of the work in that space and uh you know you can see a lot here around communication collaboration that's you know how do we continue to step that up those feedback loops that we've mentioned multiple times tonight how do we communicate to people our expectations how we're improving what we're doing to get better how will how those in our community students staff parents community members all can can help contribute to making this the most positive environment questions comments on any of these on the social and emotional learning aspect this may kind of dovetail into your staff section but um assessing whether or not we have adequate Staffing levels to provide the requisite amount of support for our students I remember being at a board meeting before the election hearing about how taxed some of those who are handling these issues are and I think it would be meaningful to have your administrative team assess whether or not we have adequate Staffing levels to meet our student needs absolutely you know and we do that on every year which is why we expanded two of our positions this year the path coordinator and the Student Success coordinators to make sure that you know at least that kind of tier two that second tier of support was there you know every year that I've been here we've increased resources in our C Triple S our counseling student Support Services area that's uh an area of the district that's grown because the needs have grown uh every year but yes I mean it's it's just that's a yearly task for it maybe something that's unsaid but no no it's maybe adding it would just be a point of emphasis I guess I guess uh okay yeah let's let's see if it shows up in the Staffing piece but I can't remember if it's there or not all right uh moving into the next uh strategic uh direction is growth of student ownership and agency on this one we have three different uh we got a lot more granular when the Strategic plan was built in this section so you'll see like back here in these just the way that the Strategic plan was written these are very you know more 30 000 foot uh kind of statements that we're working inside of when we move into this uh strategic Direction the expectations got a lot more granular so we moved from like in that first strategic Direction the expectations very large overarching this one we moved from like 30 000 foot view to more like 5 000 foot view so you're going to see less kind of actual goals and tasks under there because a single goal or task gets us that more granular outcome so the in this one really focused on academic progress and tracking that and making sure we're communicating it that we're focusing on how students use their time once again you heard some of that summer work that's being done around that leading into next school year really making sure that we're doing a good job of gathering the student perspective and their voice obviously as you heard today the more students that we have as leaders the easier it is to then gather their voice so creating more leadership opportunities for students as part of that obviously student engagement is inside of that and then you'll start to see this idea it's all through the Strategic plan of what comes next for our students so the idea of post-secondary planning and the connections to what students do after they leave us is threaded throughout the Strategic plan and you can see that in some of the goals and tasks that are in here as well questions on on any of these or clarifications all right and then I this one just has a couple more really this comes back to that activities Athletics data one of our key uh key things we're focusing on that we realized last year's we started to try to track this was uh the way that we are tracking student involvement in these and attendance enact act not Athletics so much but activities is an area where the data isn't great for us so we really need to Define what it means for a student to be involved in a club you know is it signing up and you know being on the mailing list so you see what's going on is it you have to attend once does it you have to attend regularly what is regularly because some clubs meet twice a week while other ones meet once a month like so you know when you get into the activities world it's very different as you move from one activity to another one club to another so as we look at it and say is a kid actively engaging in these extracurricular well Sports is kind of easy right but activities is as much muddier and then also it's you know we need to start looking at how do we offer Credence to students that are active outside of school but maybe it's not in one of the things that we are offering you know we have students that are very active in scouting or their church group or we have you know students that are going to be Olympians and like that's they're active they're involved they're managing things outside of school as well as school but it's not one of our things it's a very important thing to them but it's not ours but that doesn't mean that they're not doing something outside of school so there's all of these things that we need to like learn how to better measure and evaluate if a student truly is involved Beyond this the academic school day thing give any self-reporting like can a kid right that's what we have to figure out is how do we do that right how do we and then record that accurately so that that we know it's there so this is kind of a new data set that we like we we've thought for years like being active at school being active outside of school was important to student health and and students being successful but there's been a wealth of data over the last couple of decades about it's a real predictor of post-secondary success there's just not been a lot of work on like what should that data look like as it goes in to track it which is last year we started to look at that um and we hope well not hope we will make progress on on that this next school year but it's it's a messy data problem out there but one with a ton of potential to really improve upon the overall experience of our students absolutely well I'm excited to see what you guys are able to do with that and that student Outreach piece like if a student isn't involved in something why is that is it their home life doesn't allow them to or we have nothing that interests them or you know or or what are those things that are stopping a student from being involved is Administration working on anything to measure post-graduation success as as like a with all of these things in place and so you see you have a student the past couple years you've been in these extracurriculars and has been a very academically successful student are we taking any measures to follow up with them after they've been in college or afterwards to measure how actually successful all these things are yeah that data is really the answer is yes but so yes we are actively working and trying to get better data of what happens post High School one of the things we started doing last year was gathering student contact information like their personal email addresses so that we could start reaching out to students one year five year five years after they leave us of course that's self-reporting and that they they have to join in and do that we also worked this year legislatively um to try to get better data from our community college Partners in Illinois so in real time and then after uh they continue at a community college we know the largest number of our students post-secondary for college where they go is College of DuPage so that's another data set we're looking at bringing in if students are being successful once they leave us there and then we we're left to tools that aren't really accurate out there that we can Garner some information from like the [Music] just like went in and went out uh there's a college Clearinghouse data that we can get from our from colleges out there but it's hit or miss and it's not it's not uh accurate data just kind of gives us a glimpse but post-secondary data is really hard to come by hmm do we have the um alumni page or anything for the graduates college graduates of District 99 what would describe what would be on that alumni page because I mean get back to us they can put feedback on you know like a web page and it says your graduating class is uh 2002 and we're actually that's why we started Gathering last year not this year's graduates the year before graduates uh all of their email addresses so that we could reach out years afterwards to request that kind of feedback year we recognize certain graduates oh the the distinction yeah yeah and how are you oh people there's a whole process for that people are nominated yeah yeah but what we're looking at is I mean just the general experience yeah absolutely like we do an exit survey as students leave us but now we're developing like one year out how did it go five years out how did it go knowing that that like you're not going to hear from every student right is just and the students that tend to respond to those surveys are students that either had a really good experience or a terrible one right yeah um and as the years go by the pool that's responding will get smaller and smaller well it could be like most at the universities and stuff you just go onto their website and you can type in you know hey I graduated this year and this is what I'm doing I'm you know president of XYZ and you know I am you know involved in this and just like an open-ended thing that you don't have to send out to anyone you just can respond I think that may be what that's right database that we we just did one last year uh 2022 where we use that third party company to gather that that information in but yeah it's you know once again it's whoever volunteers to to send it in yeah but yes Chris that is an area where we would like to learn more but you know it's more National surveys and those kinds of things that give you the data where you can lean on best practices okay when they're looking at just large data sets across the country our small data set is much harder together well we're trying trying to get a better better set of Dad all right uh the next uh strategic direction is increased student engagement post-secondary planning so we have a whole section on post-secondary planning around here uh real you can see some of the things that tie into this is the idea of executive functioning knowing how to manage your time we know that that is a as we started our strategic planning process was a lot of feedback we got from former students that they were leaving us and were not being successful in managing their time um so that's part of the keys of one inside of our new schedule right is that it offers students that opportunity to practice managing their time one day a week with us and then we're helping them do that with some of the sports that Ryan offered up today but also in the lessons that we're teaching them and strategies we're giving them to be more successful during that time you know uh I didn't want to interrupt Ryan as he was rolling over there but we do know and it was brought up the research definitively shows that forming groups of people to help you be successful as adults like study groups at college is huge hugely essential to to being successful finding a group to be with in the workplace finding a group to be with in college finding a group to be within your personal life finding those groups and fostering them and learning to be successful inside of them is hugely helpful when you become when you move into college or you become an adult so the idea of how can we Foster that here within our walls is a huge piece moving forward um so you can see how those fit inside of here and then once again like I said before leadership opportunities so we can have students lead other students in those settings anything in here the next two sections really continuing under post-secondary success knowing that families are important in developing this as well providing equal access for all students to a post-secondary planning and to what we're offering here within schools especially traditionally marginalized students and families that might not have had a legacy of a family to help share with them how to navigate some of these complex post-secondary systems that we're reaching out to that I mean like Abbott is something that's built in our curriculum that helps with that but how do we just make sure that that's available to all students in some shape or fashion and obviously the focus on Career Pathways post-secondary planning things like internships tcd all of those those opportunities that we offer in our schools one of the things that is in here that will continue to work for work towards is helping students understand the courses that they're taking now what careers those are preparing them for down the line so that they can see a connection between what they're doing now and what they might want to do in the future anything in here that I you'd like for me to pull out post-secondary planning just mean college or that's okay you know whole secondary planning is anything that comes yeah yeah it's the however many years follow the four years with us so I I always I always kind of boil it down to the bucket of they're going to continue to learn they're going to work they're going to need to fill their time like and they're going to have relationships with people in all of those settings to me those are kind of the big buckets of whatever happens after us entails so what are you going to do at some point you're going to have to learn more things whether it's formally or informally you're probably going to have to work uh to sustain yourself you're hopefully going to have some free time that you're going to fill with something that you enjoy and you're going to have relationships in a variety of these settings that you're going to have to support So to me it's how are we helping students prepare themselves to fill those buckets then we move into uh the last strategic Direction that's really focused on our staff uh the first section really looks at uh student relationships uh connections how do we recruit staff how do we keep them here how do we develop staff that are with us how do we make sure that we all as professionals are using best practices in the settings that we're in and how do we provide time and opportunity for all of that to happen any questions on these two and the inside of this would be Don you asked earlier like staffing needs and development around social emotional learning this would happen kind of in that first one we're increasing a caring trusting belonging environmental Stone you know through an equity lens do uh do staff and teachers are they able to utilize the counselors no uh counselors here for students so we have a employee assistance program for outside counseling for adults that would would see you know seek it out that way yeah really like uh counselors psychologists social workers nurses all of that piece of C Triple S that's all student facing our staff utilizing the resources that are available to them it's not something we because of confidentiality we don't gather data on it we just provide those opportunities for staff we educate them on what's available but then it's up to the staff member to engage in that okay um so anything else on this one then I think called out specifically in this next one is social emotional learning in our intervention programs and monitoring the data around that so that's another spot where it shows up with our staff here and then your question earlier sharing staff roles and responsibilities match the current needs of our students is that second one okay so really this is how we use the data that we're Gathering about where students are interrogating what we talked about what kind of data are we Gathering see if students are getting interventions if they're appropriate and then making sure we have the appropriate staff that when we bring in staff we onboard them appropriately so they're up and ready to go that we're working constantly on our culture within our staff and staff morale and feedback that's going to be a big piece you're going to hear a lot about this year as we enter into a whole project around staff morale and a feedback loop and a team of staff that are helping us shape the decisions we're making to make sure that we're meeting their needs as an organization moving forward so Rob will be leading that project and Reporting out with that team of Staff as it forms and everything else throughout the year any questions on these obviously the board has been provided a wealth of like internal granular details to how we'll be doing some of these I invite the board to peruse through that information as well reach out with any questions you have around these big overarching ideas or the more granular detail inside of it this information has been shared with the district leadership team so administrators and chairs it's been shared with both uh bargaining groups the union leadership in both of those groups so that and I've followed up with any questions that have come in and offered to meet with them if they have further questions and then all of this uh will be what we're parsing out and determining what we need to share with staff in those opening days how do we plan to nurture a culture of support and collaboration among our staff so that is this whole project that Rob will be coming later to share all of that with you yeah we're partnering with a third party called EAB that's the name of the company that has a pretty well defined process that's been used in many other school districts some locally and across the country that's really designed around a it's a predefined survey that goes out to your staff that it's around if I remember correctly seven different domains of a a workplace experience that information comes back and then it is a team of Staff members led by that'll be led by Rob but a cross-section of our staff that look at that feedback kind of isolate what are the top priorities of things that need to be addressed and then start determining how we should appropriately address those concerns cool so and then I'd say you know it's it's a constant it just keeps going yeah in this Loop so that you can determine like is this thing that was a top thing has it been addressed and now it's kind of fallen down on the list because we owe we know that like no matter where we work there's always things that we would like to see different or improve or those kinds of things that it's it's never like oh we fixed it right so uh this will create an opportunity for that constant dialogue feedback and then evaluating if like this team is going to look at it prioritize something make some kind of change in the workplace environment what we should see is that concern fall down in the list and something fall up in its place and then now it's move on to the next thing but we also know like you can't do everything all at once right so it really it's like what is most critical let's focus our resources on what's most critical hopefully resolve that and then open up resources to take on them the next most important concern cool cool so it's a pretty well defined process from an external group has good real real solid research behind it great and then are we being asked to approve this either is it the August 21st or August 7th August 7th which is will be a workshop with action these will be on there because I'd like for the board to approve them before we present them to the staff the staff will be back before we meet at our normal August meeting okay so I'd like to be able to get up in front of the staff with the administrative team and say the these are the board approved goals for the year okay as I said uh please you know take another walk through them all of the background information has been provided as well if there's something that is nagging at you or you know I didn't give you the opportunity to comment on it today please reach out just copy Don and I on that so that we can discuss it and then bring it back to the we'll bring it back on the 7th thank you foreign Jeff up for our new board members this is Jeff Burgos is our HR Director um one of the things that uh came out of a recent memo to the board was a question about how we our hiring process and then ultimately how we announce our hirings and approve our hirings at board meetings since we have three new board members and some questions came up we thought it'd just be a good opportunity to review just give you like the 30 000 foot view of our hiring practices we have I'll share with the board at some point we have an internal document that outlines I might have already I can't remember but we have an internal document that that Jeff works on that documents all of our practices for hiring internally that I'll share with the board at a different point you can take a look at it all right all right over to you Jeff thank you Hank um so yeah so hiring practices here in District 99 the I've got a handful of slides we're kind of walking through the main kind of themes and steps within that and then you know I've got some bullet points obviously and as Hank mentioned there's a much more detailed document that's an internal document that he can share with you that is also shared with our district leadership team and anybody who's in a hiring capacity um so initial coordination so that comes from you know finding out there's a need and there are several ways that happens uh particular to our teaching staff that's usually with our staffing meetings that happen in late winter early spring as we're preparing for the next year and so it typically happens there is a principal then we'll coordinate with their staff in the building around the building perspective so what does that include that includes things like all right what position do we need to fill in particular to let's say it's a science position are we looking for somebody who's more physics more chemistry more biology we're talking associated with somebody who's more you know us history more geography so there's lots of considerations that need to be put into that as well as checking with the principal from across town and saying okay have the DC's talk and and see what kind of overlap and coordination we need to do to make sure that we're meeting the needs of our students uh you know as well as possible because one of the things they keep in mind is that when we hire people a lot of people think oh I got hired downers North I got hired down or South but they're actually being hired by District 99 and so there's you know we have to keep that perspective all the time that we might have pieces that move from year to year we got to be ready for that um so the next step is then the principals figure out what is what we need and as I said for Staffing it's a bigger group conversation as well and then that's when positions get posted on our website which leads to experience for candidates which is they're able ability to get on there and see those and and type in or I should say click on and then type in a lot of things for the written application then that also to be submitted also requires a video interview so we have a video interview that besides uploading their resume and other documents like reference letters and all the demographic stuff you normally would do experience they also do uh a brief video interview so it's usually about four questions they have about uh you know two minutes to respond to those and then those are used as sort of our first screening tool for our hiring so that um even before they look at the written applications we always encourage our uh hire managers our department chairs in particular and the assistant principles who work with them to look at those video interviews to make sure that we are you know not just looking at people on paper and that we are looking at people in person as well it's nice because it kind of counts then we can say everybody who applies to District 99 at least gets an interview of some kind so we have that to look at I got you thank you thank you um so then next we have uh the interviewing itself so I talked a little bit about this uh primarily when you know most of the hiring we're talking about is certified staff or teaching staff and so uh the first people involved at our department chairs and then the designated administrator so designated administrator as I mentioned is another admin as administrator one of our assistant principals could be our principal um uh one of our building level directors who work with the department chair and partner with them in this hiring process so as I mentioned candidates will submit their application with the video interview all their materials and then the designated administration department chair review those applicants so they're looking at those videos and they're saying wow here are some candidates that really stood on those videos now let's look at their applications make sure things like do they have the background that is ideal for what we're looking at after that sort of coordination piece I first mentioned and trying to find out who are the Slate of candidates that are going to be our best group of people to bring in for an in-person interview and then that can vary in terms of numbers depending on how many qualify candidates we have then what happens is the department chair and designated administrator they also put together an interview advisory team and so that is the folks I've already mentioned then that will also include teachers from the building as well from the Department that is the positions posted in to allow them to have a voice in the process to meet the candidates to give perspective because obviously we've heard about a lot about our goals today and collaboration how it's important and teamwork and things like that so we also want to get a sense and feedback from our current staff on any new staff that are coming in so we want them to be part of that process um the inner advisory team also has some things that go along with that there's again a kind of a a link to the larger document as a separate document just for this team where they are coached up and reminded about good hiring practices in particular things like uh being aware of biases and interviews and so there's like kind of you know definitions what types of biases are what they are how to avoid them we have a few videos that people are on these advisory teams view to remind them about being cognizant when you're sitting in an interview about saying you know oh the first person was great and then letting them be the standard you judge earn else by but you know trying to put those things out of your mind as much as you can and being fair and taking each candidate at their worth as they come in and being specific about the you know things that are pauses for them one of the things that we might need to do to support them if we were to add them to our team and as an ongoing goal in our district is to try and increase the diversity of our staff to more better uh reflect the growing diversity of our students and so if there our qualified candidates so they have their certification they have you know particular sometimes specific certifications in the areas we're looking at like I said we're looking for somebody who's a physics-based teacher we need somebody who has a physics background we want to make sure that we bring those candidates in and give them the opportunity to come in and interview with us so that we are again purposely trying to avoid some of those biases that might exist so after that process then we get to our finalists um you know not the finalists but sort of the final group narrow it down usually gets narrowed down to two or three candidates um and that will involve a couple of things that's going to involve a performance assessment and so the department chair and the designated administrator will work together to determine what that's going to be and it can be a plethora of things that there's an opportunity to go observe that teacher teach in their classroom or review some materials that they have in terms of lesson planning they've done maybe there's some other uh you know a question and scenario types of things so again that is varies in a lot of ways the document that is more detailed has some samples and examples of the things that can be used for those performance assessments but again the idea there is to try and tease out as much you can in a practical sense what this person can bring to the table as a candidate for us and again as I said those are varied and customizable because depending on the need in the department and the position we might want somebody to pursue a different type of performance assessment to try and fill where we feel like we have a need based on that opening or somewhere we want to get stronger and get better um at that time then also the department chair will start their reference check so they're making those phone calls sending out those forms to make sure that we are getting some check on the references that always includes a phone call to a direct supervisor um which is sometimes some people list that person then the references sometimes they don't but that's something we always seek to do because we want to have that perspective of the employee potential employee then there's a second admin interview which is usually involves the building principle obviously and also then Gina comes into play at this point as well as our leader in curriculum side of things to make sure that person meets the muster in terms of what we're doing curricularly for our students so she'll meet usually two candidates out of that group and then kind of be part of that process as well so again once that happens and Gina's had a chance then to meet with those candidates all the data is reviewed so we're reviewing the video interview reviewing the notes from the first in-person interview we're reviewing um the application the references all these things and taking the notes you know feedback from those people who involve were involved on that interview advisory committee and then the designated administrator department chair are reviewing all of that and then they talk to the principal and say Here's the finalist here's who we would like to recommend to hire principal then double checks with Gina to verify hey any red flags about hiring jury that she seemed like she's good and Gina says thumbs up or go with your e and then the department chair has the clearance to then reach out to our candidate and make uh sort of that initial offer saying you are a finalist you're who we would like to go with pending board approval and you're you know discussion with HR about everything else so once they do that they send over information to me so I know the candidate is and then my role in that process at that point then is to review all the information I double check on their certifications their endorsements do they have what they need to legally teach you know I do my due diligence to make sure there isn't any other things we need to worry about I review the information that comes back from the background check they also do which is the fingerprinting criminal background check to make sure that they are also fine there and then I will contact the candidate and I discuss you know what they're say whether we're looking to place them on our salary schedule based on their experience as well as their educational background which is how our salary schedule works and then if they are amenable that then we send out our contract to them which then is what will come to the board then for approval and that's what shows up in the Personnel report like what you'll see this evening so one of the things that came up in the last week or last month not last week last month was that we had an administrator come on board prior to being approved by the board and over the last several years working with a variety of boards we've approached this in different ways but many times we need to announce internally sometimes externally that somebody is starting with us prior to the board approving that person being employed with us and this is where the board superintendent relationship gets a little weird as we discussed in our starting right workshop and the fact that the board hires one employee technically me and then the superintendent's responsible for hiring all of the other employees however there is an oversight of the superintendent hiring all of the other employees by coming to the board for board approval so there's always almost always this window of time in between where administratively we've worked through this whole process that Jeff has outlined we've made an offer to somebody they've accepted that offer administratively we've signed off on that process yet the board has not yet approved that person sometimes it's while the school year is running right like a teacher has to leave for some reason we hire somebody to come in it's we need that a teacher in front of our kids right away we're administratively approving this person but it might be weeks before it comes to the board for approval so we're still communicating to that teacher's students and their families that you know Mrs Smith has come in to replace you know Mr Jones and uh you know pending board approval they will be the full-time teacher in this position boards in the past have uh and board presidents in the past have encouraged us to lead with that statement that this person is coming on board pending board approval to make it clear that the board has a role in the approval process however the board's role in the approval process is very restricted by law right there would have to be something a glaring problem in that recommendation to the board for the board to not approve that and have it move forward right so uh we don't want to give the impression that it's a rubber stamp by the board right that the board has no involvement but the board has limited involvement in a hiring of anything other than a superintendent right um so I I guess at this point I kind of like this board's take there's kind of two we talked with the board's attorneys on kind of how different districts do this some districts take the tack that we do we kind of open with it you know Travis McGuire will be hired by District 99 pending board approval that's kind of the opening line of our announcements right other districts talk about hiring Travis bringing them in everything else and then at the end of the announcement you know and Dr McGuire's contract will be on the next board agenda for approval all right and indicate a softer uh direction that the board has authority over it either way it shows up it's just how would this board like for us to indicate that when we make those announcements and it's not for every hiring we do but like a head coach or you know a very public teacher like a band director or an administrator or principal those are the types of positions where there's usually some kind of an announcement that goes along with that that could be going out in that in between time um I can summarize the concern that was raised by Cara who is not here tonight um so her her point of bringing this up was as a board uh as Hank suggested we have limited roles in approving the hiring of personnel right as Hank suggested unless there's some exigent circumstance that would present itself were pretty much approving those hires so to say that we're hiring somebody subject to board approval sort of gives off an impression that we're sort of going to be evaluating the hiring and determining whether or not that person should be hired as a board and I think that's probably not that true and accurate representation of the process but Hank explained to me that the former board under Dr cupka's leadership wanted that language in there because they wanted the public to understand that it's not simply a rubber stamp um it's ironic because Kara was arguing that it is a it is kind of a rubber stamp um so I think Hank is just looking for direction from us as to what language to utilize as we go forward do we want that language that it's subject to board approval or the alternative is to like yeah the other thing would like we have led with it in the past to indicate that the board has a process as a part of the hiring process which you do you are asked to approve everything and nobody's when Jeff makes the offer it's always pending board approval right like if if it wasn't approved at a board meaning that person would be terminated immediately right um the other option is being kind of just less leading and front forward with that and just including that the process ends with border like the recommendation for you put a kind of lower in the announcement towards the end where you say you know Mr Espinoza will come to the board for contractual approval you know at whatever date um uh she was just questioning whether or not that language was necessary because we're not really um you know integrally involved in making individual decisions on hiring processes yes it does it does transaction yeah correct my my perspective after hearing all of this is as long as it's not interfering or interrupting your process Jeff by making that representation that's subject to the approval of the board and I think we should just continue on that path um because what if there is a circumstance that there is something that was missed and the board has an opportunity not here it doesn't have to happen not here if you remiss if we if we change the policy tonight and then something did happen and we'd have to sort of then take action potentially to terminate that employee even though we never really want to prove that in the first place so I'm of the mindset that we just maintained the process that was uh directed from the prior board yeah I agree I would agree I agree okay that makes it easy we have a template that we generally use that indicates that the final process is board approval you mentioned that the video is that video for everyone who wants a role here at okay yeah we do we video we use the video interviewing for every position we post how is that going for us because that's an extensive process for those who probably aren't Educators so who may be looking for a role that may be in a um floor salary band I mean because that's a extensive process based on where and I don't know well yeah there's still people are still looking for employees so how do we compete if we need an employee who is not going to be an educator but we need someone in the facilities or something like that that's a lot of steps for the role and we have to compete with other or they don't have to do as much so I I know I question question that in the past about that's a that's a lot to ask in a competitive um employee environment I think there should be based on the role we look at the steps that the person would have to take basically rule because having someone you know on a video that may be looking for a role in our facilities or a lunchroom or something like that that may not even have access to um video and all that stuff I yeah I I think I have said before I think it's a lot based on the what the level of the position may be well I know I don't think so the first question is impacting us something that effect and I don't think that it is we do occasionally get people who have questions about the process and uh we're able to answer those I know for some of our uh hiring managers who do hiring facilities or some of the other areas beyond our certified staff they actually appreciate the video interviews because it allows them sometimes the opportunity to streamline their hiring process a little bit because they sort of get that first interview screening is done on the computer um I would say when we look at I don't have a hard uh percentage number but when I look at the number of applicants we have just in any position versus the number of people who reach out with problems it's pretty minimal um and half the time it's you know they need to update their phone because a lot of people are doing these on their phone or on an iPad or something and and they're and it seems to be working out well I know a lot and there's a decent number of other districts who also do use the hiring videos as well there's two different Services out there but they're all pretty similar in terms of candidate experience oh okay I'm just curious of what the other board members think I actually think it's a stressful process um and it depends on what role you're looking for I've talked to some community members and kind of talked about oh yeah they're like you have any roles check it out and then I hear oh my God I just you know just the idea of going through all that are the you know they may not have completed it for those reasons I think it's a great idea but I just think in a competitive employee Market is that a competitive approach depending on the role that's all yeah well I mean the area that uh we maybe have the biggest need right now is with substitute teachers and paraprofessionals in the district those are the positions we have most difficulty filling and in order to address just the need in general and also maybe taking consideration what you mentioned that maybe some people may not be comfortable um that's why we did the hiring career fair in June and we're going to be looking to do another one in August where we are here at we did it South last time probably we'll be doing it again I think it was about four hours of time where myself and the rest of my staff were there Scott was there to help out a little bit our last one and we had Chromebooks we brought in some of our current staff members who are paraprofessionals and substitute teachers um and all those people were there were to meet these people and answer questions we had Chromebooks available so we told them hey here's what this application process involves if you'd like to do that here here's Chromebooks so if you have any questions people are here to help and assist you so um yeah we're always like we understand that there might be some people from time to time who that's a bit you know maybe intimidating or they have a technology glitch or something and so we do we I think we really do do our best to go on our way to try to help support people to get those applications in yeah technology in itself could be the hinder is like I am not technically savvy so I could be the best candidate but now I can't even go for the role to the NFL for depending on what the role is so I I just think about all that stuff especially [Music] in the code just being conscious of that today in the climate of people age was right that that may not be from that perspective the other question I wanted to ask about the diversity piece so we talk about there is a video so we're already exposing I know you know the diversity if there is a video I remember Pete talked about at one point we had it where you did not we were doing maybe extracting the knee we're doing something to kind of ensure that there is no unconscious bias in the process in the in the interview process but the video actually you know that kind of well and that's part of the reason for the video interview again as well is that you know you're not looking at names on a paper you're looking at the video which you don't know what somebody's background is based just on their name necessarily so we want to encourage our staff to look at those videos so they are bringing in diverse candidates make sure they're getting every Fair advantage to be reviewed and considered for our positions the the video interview serves as the first face to face interview for every candidate right so everybody who takes the time to fill to to complete which is I mean each video is 30 seconds yeah there's average time to complete is maybe 10 minutes yeah so every single person that goes through the effort to apply and to complete the video interview is going to be few they're going to get a first round interview um okay okay you know where in other places where people are screening using paper there could be implicit bias based on where they went to school or where they worked before this or what they look like or any of those things that could be there that we work with our implicit bias training to make sure that those aren't there but more so we get to hear their words not what we interpret of their words on on a page right so it'd be the same as if anybody wanted a job here came in sat down in front of us asked answered four screening questions face to face and we had the opportunity to to review that with everybody who wanted a job here so yes it can be a barrier maybe for some people but we believe it opens more doors for candidates than it closes and we we haven't had issues with custodian staff or support staff or I mean it very few individuals that have a tech issue and most the time it's um they want to re-record some like they made a mistake as they were recording yeah something happened yeah or a lot you know they're at home and the dog knocked over their computer so they want to reset we can we can do that yeah I I guess we can imagine measure who how many people don't do it because they don't have technology we can only you know what I mean I've only had one person reach out to me in the eight years that we've been doing it uh that was concerned that they needed to complete a video interview but um because we can't ask uh in the application process you know what race or ethnicity someone is the video interview allows us to fulfill our policy which is to bring in a diverse candidate then provide them with an interview that would be the only way unless we're going to interview every single candidate well I said and that's kind of the proactive advantage to it so somebody's name is Bob Smith I mean they could be biracial they could be any one of uh different backgrounds um and so this gives a chance to look at that person say okay here's somebody I wouldn't expect there was a diverse candidate just looking at them on paper but they are and I'm going to be bringing them in or you know hopefully we don't have this because we we're cognizant about this but there's also you know there's research out there that'll say that if you have a more ethnic sounding name from a less anglo-sounding name you might be less likely to have your application looked at where we purposely are saying no you must look at these videos you must make sure you're giving these candidates Fair appraisal and fair review just like you would with anybody else if you're looking just on paper it's I think that helps hopefully is leveling uh the playing field in that regard just to make it where we are you know instead of meeting our goal to try and you know have our staff more more accurately reflect our students which is always going to be an ongoing goal so if we got rid of the video interviews we might miss out on some potential diverse candidates that we don't otherwise bring in foreign I think I'm Google is concerned about this video two for certain roles that's all but okay all right um then once they're uh somewhere in here there's an onboarding process depending on the timeline and everything else they could be before the announcement before board approval or it could be after but generally Jeff what do we do with onboarding to get somebody started up with absolutely so onboarding I think that you know I view it as starting with and I make that call to the candidate to make an offer to them and then for all of our candidates regardless of what type of position they're interviewing for then the next step is pretty similar um I review with them here's you know what you're going to need to consider Insurance options you know uh some of the disclosures things we need you know being a school district of DCFS Etc and then they are reached out to by my office and uh usually it's it's Chris Blum who's our ad assistant in the office you'll meet with them when they have their paperwork ready sits down with them make sure that they have all their ducks in a row and T's crossed eyes dotted all that paperwork's done it's no chance for him to reinforce some of the things I've discussed with them on the phone another chance for those candidates to ask questions while they're coming on board um so that's that paperwork side of things and then again specific to our certified staff obviously the bulk of those come in at the start of the school year and so then they have the new teacher orientation program which is in August which is an annual thing run by the associate principles for instruction at each building so I always make sure they know about that but then that gets them started with on the right foot with everything they need to know about d99 to be successful right off the bat get some chance to get you know meet their Mentor teacher hopefully so they have that piece going on with our mentorship program moving on so that onboarding process starts with my phone call and continues on uh into the future of their employment with us at least a couple years formally but then informally you know hopefully they're building relationships that allow them to be successful in the long term as well so any questions overall Jeff do you do you see District 99 still being competitive in the marketplace and attracting the highest and best candidates I I do um and it's you know it's a great question because I'm reminded about when we uh we had a job for several job fairs I went to in the spring and uh you know one of them was with other a group of high school districts that I you know collaborate with the other people in my similar positions at those districts and we kind of as a group put on a job fair and you know it was for you know let's say it was 10 to 2 o'clock and I was there for another half hour because there were still people lined up who just wanted to say hello get their resumes in to District 99 because of our reputation and when I go to like ISU or which is a you know one of I think the fifth largest producer of teachers in the country um there's always lines of people who want to come in and and and introduce themselves to me because they are familiar with District 99 and our reputation so um you know as you hear about the teacher shortages and while that you know is real for us in the sense that some pools for those higher harder to find positions I should say get a little shallower because there's fewer candidates we still have been very fortunate because of our reputation and the great things that we're doing now um to still attract a good pool candidates to have be a place where people you know I refer to as a destination District and how would you characterize our compensation packages I mean is it competitive I would say our compensation package is competitive um we do get candidates sometimes with several years experience coming from other districts uh because a they want to come to District 99 because of the great reputation and the things that we're able to do for students here and be oftentimes they're going to get see a little bump in their paycheck versus where what they would get where they stay so we are very that's one of the reasons why I think that you know the teacher shortage hasn't hit us as hard is because we are not only competing or attracting I should say the new teachers coming out of college but we're also able to recruit from existing uh staff and other other districts how often have you found that where we've identified a candidate we've selected that candidate and then you have a conversation with them about salary and benefits and then they reject the position has that happened in your experience that has happened yeah it's it's happened this I'm going my fourth year in this role so it's happened a handful of times I would say once or twice a year that really is a sticking point um but and what happens in that regard I mean is there Talk Amongst the administrative team about potentially countering and increasing the offer or is it this is our package this is our pay grade and that's it and if you don't like it yeah and unfortunately it's more the latter uh because what I will do as it comes up I'll you know go back and probably usually it's Gene I talk to and say hey am I missing anything here you know that we should give just to or throb as well just to make sure that you know when I've reviewed all the information I have you know do I have everything I need to have given them the correct offer because that offer is going to be based on the year's experience and then it's also going to be based on their education that is applicable to our district so where we do have have run into the problem a couple times is where you know districts will do their own PD in-house and then they'll sometimes get teachers credit for that but that the way our contract is written that doesn't transfer over here necessarily because we have with a few uh specific exceptions you have to be taking coursework and advanced degree program that is par sorry coursework that's part of an advanced degree program so you have to be taking courses that are part of a master's or doctoral program and not in-house sort of like uh PD stuff that other districts who let you pile up uh those credits I mean we have some options like that here in District 99 but not as many as other districts do so that will kind of inflate and you know some places will do that I think as a way to help keep their people because then they're going to price them out of moving somewhere like District 99.

that miners have been misdiagnosed leading them to be prescribed quote life-changing and irreversible effects in July 2022 the English national health system announced it would close the Tavistock gender Clinic because of safety concerns please change course be courageous and stand in the way of harming other people's children thank you so much and and you guys smile at me and touch me on the shoulder thank you I appreciate it uh next we have Moises hi so thank you for giving me the opportunity to speak here in front of you I don't speak in front of everybody very often so please be patient with me we sometimes probably I can make mistakes or things like that but be patient so yeah I am here in order to try to protect uh to protect my kids so because this agenda like the lady was saying LG TV agenda is I think it's a serious thing that is going to be affecting our kids so it's a different Doctrine that our faith and our training is in our house so this is a many of the of the things this agenda is having is against of our faith our customs and our Traditions so I want to make sure that my kids are going to be non-indoctrinated to follow up this There's No Agenda and I am concerned about their safety like like you were mentioning about this um hormones blockers and all those kind of medicines or surgeries that are going to be the kids are going to be pushing the kids are like uh like a little like a little dog you can you can meet you can form form them so that's why this agenda is taken advantage of that of our kids because they know that at that age they are forming still they are in the process of forming if I know that something is going to be dangerous for my kids I won't allow them to do it because this is something that can affect your Healthy their lives in my my kid wants to eat chocolate all day I won't eat chocolate all day just because he wants or because he thinks he's gonna be healthy for him for him so I'm gonna let him know that there are other things like vegetables like meat which are needed for the body to grow healthy so that's why I am very concerned and I would like to I know that the governor and everything has signed bills to don't block any topic or dumb block any book but I'm very concerned about those kind of topics or books be promoted on the school because in the National education I don't remember the name of the of the National Education System but I was reading that one a little bit and it is promoting to challenge the kids to change different to change their mind to challenge themselves to try a different to be a different person to be a different what they are is what they are promoting so the one of the of the major things of the human beings is to know who they are and where they are coming from if we if we make more confusion in our kids about who they are and who they are coming from so everybody is going to be doing whatever they want with them because they are going to be destroying whatever they have like a basis or solid and it's gonna be like easy to to move like uh if if somebody already made them to to change what is what is a fact what is a biology biological fact selecting anything is going to be possible for them to to tell them to tell them and they are going to be obeying because they think that because of that and see their their little kids they don't have the conscience to be to be thinking whether it's going to be good for them in the future and what is going to be bad so that's why I am very concerned about my little kids and my young kids so I would like to know if there is a path or a way to avoid this kind of things in my my kids even if I like like the lady was saying if there is a way to to block or challenge this plan for this agenda could be great but I I uh but I need to know how to protect my kids because so that's why I'm here I am a father and I am and I am taken the decisions to for them because I according to my to my to my faith I am giving them the the best I can to choose the correct path on life what I think is going to be the more healthy for them to grow once they are adults they can make decisions but when they are when they are kids so I think as a parent I I have the responsibility to show them what is the the what is going to be the correct for them because nobody is going to be loving them more than their parents I don't I don't think that the state or the government is going to be loving more than the parents our kids so that's why and that's all thank you thank you I already had a motion I said consent agenda but it should have been agenda first so she wanted to consented in again perfect uh a motion and second are required to discuss and approve the consent agenda so move second so in your board packet you have your revenue and expenditure reports um revenues are currently at 100.1.101.90 compared to 100.3 um 07 a year ago expenditures are at 99.99 compared to 96.92 a year ago um these are still pre-audited numbers so they are going to change because there's always a couple journal entries that we do and then um over the next week and two I will kind of scrub the counts just one more time before we do the audit to make sure that everything is in the right buckets before it gets to the audit um level but just so you know that these aren't the actual June that will be on the audit in Northern Keynes report their expenditures exceeded the revenues by 91 576 dollars for the year which reduces their fund balance down to 428 177 last year they had um 500 and then we reduced it down to that it's mostly timing of the bills being paid from the prior year and just kind of is always going to have this little ebb and flow when we first took over a couple years ago that was closer to almost 800 000 so we've knocked that down and trying to spend it when it when the money comes in so we're doing a much better job with that this month no impact fees or transition fees were received since the last board meeting so the total impact fees for this year are going to come under budget for three 312 000 and then transition fees are going to come under about forty thousand dollars um in your packet you also have bills payable reports for the final June so every year we do one more big payout for any last June stuff that we get from the June 20th board meeting to the end of June we try to get our insurance bills and stuff like that they come at the very end of the month so or at the end of June so we try to squeeze all of that in for the June so you have June and then you'll have July's bills Northern Kane we were able to get everything in for June for the year because it belonged to that year so there were actually no bills for July and then we're going to start our audit on August 7th so we're going to start working on that too along with the budget my phone call was uneventful on Friday oh I had mine so it was done okay just so you know um a motion a second required to discuss and approve the cross-country overnight trip that will be held September 8th and 9th 23.

so if you were to take a ballpark like if it's 160 I think it was up roughly 160 per student if I recall yes like what's the actual cost per student just in my head just so I can north of 200 or um it's really hard for me to nail down all of them I can follow up with some more detail but um yeah it varies so much from a student who's taking High School classes that might have some AP courses in there compared to to an elementary an elementary student the 150 160 might have been okay for the elementary by itself perfect that's what I thought I wasn't sure so I appreciate it you're welcome dollar amount the Health Trust is is growing and what you mentioned which is good and does does the Health Trust committee do you do they entertain bids from various providers each year no we look at um there are certain things that we do on a schedule um we evaluate the third party administrator which is generally as a self-funded Health Trust we basically you have a handful of options it's Anthem United or a local option and we have been with Scio for a couple of decades now we evaluated often I can't tell you how many conversations we've had over the last five years about whether or not we should take it to bid and we usually ask our advisor to go out and Market test it and they come back to us and say you're probably gonna get the same or similar experience to what you are now thank you the experience we had last year with 12 pays and one half of the year and 14 pays in the other half I know that there are organizations that are impacted by the 27 pay a year issue maybe once every 10 or 15 years and I can't remember is that something that impacts us or if we got a way around it it is but it's way down the line before we have to revisit it again it caused all kinds of problems a few years ago when we addressed it last time but I think we have until 2027 I think before it rolls back around again for us thank you okay okay we have another round of policy updates do you care if I take a second just for this audience please talk through our Public Work session that happened just before this in case there are different people in attendance so um some people have seen we did post that we held a public work session from five to six today this is just in reaction to us as a new board figuring out how we work together and provide input and understand each other's perspectives on policies as they're ever changing so we don't make decisions there we don't vote there we just get an opportunity to talk about our perspectives as new policies come up Dr Roberts provides a list of the policies that we have niola revisions for we provide input on those that we have questions or comments on and then we prioritize those tonight and I think we made it through four so Dr Pleak was nice enough to take notes for us that input will be discussed by the end Administration and then a few of us will work with Dr Roberts on her visions that would then be provided to the board before our vote on on that grouping which I think will be on August 7th so for people who wanted to know what that meeting was that's what it is public is welcome to attend we don't necessarily have a portion of the time set aside for a public comment that can still happen here in the business meeting but it was our first go-around I think it was pretty successful was really helpful to get input from the team so just a little context there now Dr Robert thank you Mrs Wilden so we have a few different things happening here the first two bullets are in regards to First reading on some policies that just from a timing standpoint we needed to try to adjust but again just a first reading tonight no no vote revision to policy 6320 is there is will be a recommendation that policy is called purchasing and then revision to policy 32 20.01 which is teacher appreciation grants relatively small majors in each of those there was a dollar amount change in regards to purchasing agents syncing out price quotations and giving a range and in terms of where those dollars were in terms of when that need it would occur Dr Phillips you might want to take just a second to indicate we moved recommending we'll be recommending 150 000 moving to three hundred thousand dollars in terms of falling within that window of dollar amounts sure we we made a special request to add this one to this agenda Dr Bozeman and I the legislature changed this threshold only for schools um to have to go competitively bid projects increasing that threshold to 300 000 for us incredibly advantageous and they recognize the the dramatic increases in prices for for several items over the last handful of years I'll just give you one example you all approved I believe it was a a chiller for Northside uh just in the last handful of months if this threshold had been in place we could have just gone and purchased that Chiller had it installed with the specs that we use there's only basically one or two vendors that could have done it anyway but instead because we've had to competitively bid it we had to incur the cost of an architect and engineer go out and do the bids run them in the paper so it actually cost us more in that case this will allow us to if more efficiently meet our facility needs without having to unnecessarily competitively bid projects up to that three hundred thousand dollar Mark as opposed to 150 000.

so we serve 40 districts in the state um when I started 50 I've been with the company 15 years all in Indiana I started out as an assistant director and then a food service director and so on and so forth when I started we only had two Partnerships in the state of Indiana and now we're at 40.

the one couple cells that I want you to pay particular close attention to in the total tested to look at our fastest growing subgroup our Hispanic subgroup and then to go down and look at free and reduced and Els so we increased our El population by 180 students from 21 to 23 and we also increase their Proficiency in ela still very very low in terms of where we want to be proficiency wise but we know we at least are moving in the right direction our one red cell that we're concerned about is our special education subgroup while there has been one percent growth from 21 to 23 there was actually a decline from 22 to 23 in the LA and so that's a particular subgroup that you'll see when we get to a future slide that we're beginning to develop some specific support for our schools around as we switch to the the next slide this is the below proficiency and so are we moving students out of that lowest below proficiency category and you can see some some green there for our Black and Hispanic students free and reduced yells again multiracial is a group that we actually have more students in the below category now than what we did in 21.

they are spread out all around the high school if you look in the library we have two kindergarten classes that meet in here so let me look down in the Alcove and around you'll see some some great kindergarten stuff happening and then as Dr saber Maguire alluded to we wrote and on Friday found out that we were awarded 126 000 acceleration Academy Grant so we will be able to run an additional week of Summer programming and again this is a Desi funded program designed to really tackle learning loss from covet again so between now and then we will work at targeting students looking at student data to really really Target our students that we would like to invite this program will have our Rising kindergartners so we'll have our brand new Dartmouth Public Schools kiddos invited to this all the way through our eighth grade students and then our 10th grade students as well so we have an early literacy Academy for K one and two and then we have a regular Ela Academy for grades three through eight and grade 10 and a math academy grades three through eight and ten and so we look forward to we have 32 classrooms on that Academy it's a wonderful week it's a quick week but the kids get in and we focus a lot on Hands-On learning really getting in and doing some deep skill diving and it's a nice sort of transition for some of our kids to start thinking about school again and get back shake off some of that rust really Paul she was positive and drafted the job ad we are ready to put it out in that very day the state came out and approved the grant for Dartmouth so it was her pop it was her positive thinking about the grant money our way so um the other kind of exciting thing that we worked on was the week immediately the first two days right after school got out that Thursday and Friday a month ago I know which is crazy to think that it was already a month ago we held a curriculum Summit here at the high school we had 65 teachers from all levels who really paused their summer vacation by two additional days to come and do some professional development around understanding by Design some curriculum professional development around really looking at essential questions and all the things that really make a good unit and then I'll let Mr TiVo talk about some of the uh I'm gonna put you around the spot and talk about the shared drive and all the other great things sure so um one of the one of the things one of the initiatives we have that we planned for in our first year was to kind of move away from Rubicon Atlas which is a very expensive uh repository for our curriculum it's not all all that user friendly Katie and I attended a atlas workshop last fall and there was probably 20 schools and every school district was in the same place where they had invested you know funds in using this tool but the tool never really um you know made good on the promise I guess so with shared Google Drive we can do a lot of the same things but at a much more cost effective uh in a much more cost effective way and so with Mr galashaw's help where in the middle of transitioning from Atlas Rubicon over to Shared Google Drives and really we're able to kick that work off in Earnest at the curriculum Summit and um I think Kate was telling me earlier that we had a number of people apply for the summer acceleration program so we're excited about the response very much like order and logic and consistency so k through eight ten what's what's going on with nine there so I'm sure there's some reason I'm just curious and we might have some parents of you know students going into ninth grade wondering about that so could you explain that it really has to do with the the way that the state has um created the grant it's really around targeting uh many of the MCAS grades I mean it's not exclusively to that obviously with k-3 involved but that's the primary reason yeah I think the K to two there's a there's a huge focus at the state level on early literacy and early literacy skills and the data that's coming out of the pandemic is around literacy in our kids coming in behind in literacy and I think that's the sort of emphasis around the K-2 and you know unfortunately what Ross said is right the the parameters of the grant are three to eight and ten it's not lost on us that those are the years we do MCAS and so I would imagine that that is somewhat of the uh creation and motivation around the Grant and the other reason too just in case I know Katie mentioned um students that we'd be inviting and the reason for that is again the state has emphasized really targeting students who we know were most impacted by the effects of the pandemic um and we are limited to 10 of a grade level so it's for it's designed for a limited uh number of students so it's completely understood it just seems like a weird design for the state like why not include ninth graders because then they've got two years to prepare for the MCAS but what do I know State works in mysterious it sure does yes I mean the grant was posted very late too right so yeah fine and when is the program running in about three weeks so yep we're gonna wrap up summer school on Friday August 4th and then we will start the academy on Monday the 7th and hope we can just keep the momentum going and then also get out of the high school so the custodians can clean up before we reopen yeah wow anyone else have any comments or questions that's great thank you fantastic thank you thank you thank you Katie and Ross speaking of Katie and Ross additionally I just want to mention under teaching and learning in August we are going to be facility facilitating a two-day retreat with our Dartmouth leaders and a lot of the focus on that and although it's under teaching and learning it is going to really be focused on building climate and culture throughout the leadership team and so that's what I'd like to update you on next in those past few weeks I've had an opportunity to work with our central office leadership team to begin to build upon and strengthen the relationships amongst us because we're the ones who are going to be modeling those relationships for the entire school district and as I hope I expressed in the interview process that relationships are critically important and the way that we work together is not is not to be underestimated in the positive relationships are really going to help us to move the work going forward and it really relationships really are at the heart of any successful organization so we had a little mini retreat it was just our leadership team that and at central office we call it the cult team central office leadership team so I'm getting used to some of the acronyms here in Dartmouth I like that one that one's easy for me rolls right off the tongue but what we did was really worked on establishing norms for the way that we're going to work together and it really gave us an opportunity to get to know each other better and so I'm looking forward to having putting some of these processes and and things in place for our August meeting with our DLT team and Katie Ross and I were meeting on that today and we have practically a full day planned on I'm tomorrow planned on focusing on that work and as I told you in Fright when I emailed you on Friday I attended the new superintendent induction program in the Mas conference this past week both really rewarding hard to be out of a district when you're brand new in a district but at the same time I think really well worth it at the new superintendent's induction program I was able to meet with all the new superintendents across the state there are 35 of them so that's a pretty I think large number compared to what they usually have but I thought it was rewarding in that I got to connect with so many of them and a few are local so that's going to be truly helpful I was also able to spend time with my new superintendent coach her name is Maureen Lacroix Dr Maureen Lacroix who was a superintendent in Bedford and she will be joining us at our next school committee meeting to introduce herself to you I think that for me I I've said the stars of a lion mind because she is going to be just the perfect coach for me based on the initial interactions I've had with her a few highlights from the rest of the conference Katie Pavel was able paveo I'm practicing Katie's name too Katie paveo was able to join me and I'm appreciative of her time it's like having a Learning Partner with you and that's really important when you go to conferences to have somebody partner with you so that you can think about some of the presentations and some of the content that you're learning and be able to have conversations about how it can connect to the work back in your own district there were some incredibly inspirational speakers that really lifted us and then there was other work that we felt oh my goodness we have so much work to do in this area so it's a nice balance of pick you up and then bring you back down to earth which is really nice but at the same time it was practical Hands-On information that I think is important for the district and what's going on in both at the state level and nationally in education and how we need to bring that back to our school district and interpret it with our school committee and with our school community um finally I I want to say Mr Kylie can't be replaced um he you talked about him earlier he has been amazing he has truly supported me through this process through onboarding and and I've just been incredibly impressed by his professionalism his integrity and his commitment to the students and the faculty and the community of Dartmouth he is really a gem so I am happy to share that with him and I I'm sure I've said that to him many times and I know you know this he's the best of the best and when I say that I say that and all With all sincerity he's the assistant superintendent of operations and finance and has a focus on what's best for kids that is really a rare combination you know sometimes you hear people say that that's the unicorn and it truly is it's been I've had very little experience with Finance people who get what's right for kids too so I'm excited about that and at the same time he has some large projects going on I was with John I met John at the Demello School John's last name Bernard and he's wonderful he took me around the Demello to show me some of the little projects big projects because they're not little that are going on and I looked at one project and I said oh my goodness this is a mess he said no it's not this is going to be fine so I appreciated his calm demeanor because he had the vision to see through what that project is going to look like when it's done and it's things that I'm really interested in like grease traps which are incredibly important I learned today very so this is this is my learning curve but he did explain it in a way that I could understand what he meant so I walked away with some new knowledge today but other things that are going on there pain I mean they're out there painting you have a very small crew doing a whole lot of work some of what Mr Kylie left for me to share with you is the flooring replacement and Beth at the middle school in the Quinn School the freezer replacement at the Demello which is what I saw which is quite a project if you want to see something that looks like a mess that's but someday is going to look wonderful go and take a stop by there before they fix it there and the grease trap replacement so I got to see that in person and and I don't regret that experience because now I can speak to what a grease trap is and why it's incredibly important again the kitchen and cafeteria improvements and several of your buildings I mentioned the painting and you know about I've heard you talk in the past about the renovations that are happening at the for the atlas program space I'm getting my always also wanted to mention that the fiscal year end I mean he really did wrap it up in the last few days and he felt I think some relief as he went off for his two-week vacation and I can promise you he is not watching he made that very clear he has his out of office reply on and I don't even know if he'll go back and watch um but he wanted you to know that we were able to prepay some special education tuition which was a first priority for him and for the current budget going into the current budget but he did in these are his words about important for me to repeat following that we will have very little or no funds remaining but we'll be reporting back to the committee at Future school committee meetings and so I think that just about wraps up what I have to say other than I do have a couple of things that I'm hoping to add to our agenda on some of the items that are going on across the state with mass around legislation in particular related to some of our special education costs because I got a few emails right before I left for this meeting from Mary bork who is the co-president of MSS Mass Association for school superintendents and they're really hard at work to address some of the the fiscal issues facing communities like Dartmouth around the rising special education costs so thank you thank you for that I testified on another bill the other day and there's uh the the joint committee was quite receptive to understanding the depth and breadth of the the need for that so thank you for bringing that up any comments before we move on with thank you for all of that that was wonderful thank you for your report thank you it was great of course my screen goes black just as I wow that's that is a really informative thank you um and so um so for old business what we have on here it brought back to us is the um the memo regarding the um updated charge for the town's indigenous people in history and culture committee and so in your packet is that memorandum I guess it was it's well it has been updated and it's showing the strike strikes where where the changes were made and the edits were made um and uh I don't know if anyone has any comments I I quickly read through but I am trying to remember our where we were when we sent it back in May Dr Jenkins so I had raised some issues related to this on the charge and I think you know in particularly about a committee of non-school committee members or appointments providing any sort of input on instruction right that's the purview of the schools and I was not comfortable with it that's been changed so I'm I'm pretty good with that um I still have concerns about membership and I feel like we're trying to squish a square peg into a round hole here um and this may some people in this community may die of shock but I have had several really nice conversations with Jacob Ventura about this and he and I share concerns about the structure of this committee I understand that the town Charter requires voting members to be Town members at the same point in time we are creating a committee about indigenous people and we are saying that our indigenous neighbors are going to be non-voting members of that committee and I have a real problem with that that's not a partnership right and so the work here that's being proposed is good in my opinion but I feel like we should take the time to build a structure that's right whether it requires it maybe it requires an amendment to the Charter maybe it requires a petition to state government for you know setting this this up but I think we ought to do it right in full partnership with our tribal neighbors not with them as non-voting members of a committee that right if we look at what's proposed there's no guarantee now that anyone is from an indigenous tribe right it's encouraged but it's not required um so and I and I I guess the last thing I would say on that is there's something different than you know somebody sort of reaching out I'll paraphrase you know Jacob on that he's like there's one thing about someone reaching out to me to get my thoughts that's not the same thing as reaching out to the tribe to get the tribe's position on the things that this is doing right because the tribe is official government entity and so I appreciate the effort that that's going on here but I feel like I'd rather take the time to do this right the way that it should be instead of sort of just moving this forward in a way that doesn't allow an appropriate seat at the table for our indigenous Neighbors thank you Chris yeah I will certainly agree that you know I understand the town Charter and the voting capacity of being a voting members of the committee but I do agree with with Shannon uh that we really should be looking extending uh an opportunity out to to the tribes in this area and I don't know what we would have to do to get them to be voting members or how we would how this would work but I think if we're going to have a if we're if we're going to form a committee are entitled if I scroll up to the top of it here indigenous people history and culture committee that there certainly should be indigenous people that's not for take it for what it's worth and I would say um so we would look to include the tribal input so if an individual joins the committee they would be representing the tribe not their individual opinions on the subjects can so there's a conflict between right between representation and the town Charter right and the town Charter requires all members of Dartmouth committees to be Dartmouth residents that's not the same as the tribe selecting an official representative to represent the position of the tribe right there's people in the on the tribe on various sides of the issues and so whoever's randomly selected does not or appointed by us or whomever doesn't necessarily represent the official position of the tribe and so to me again to Chris's point this is a this is about right indigenous culture and history yet we're relegating our indigenous neighbors to non-voting members of the committee and that just doesn't sit right with me so I think rather than trying to Ram this through and the structure that we have we need to take a step back and say what would a committee look like in an ideal form and what do we need to do to make that happen to have our indigenous neighbors and partners be full participatory members of this committee yeah I think maybe we need to take a step back and figure out what it is that we want and then figure out how to make what we want because I'm not sure this is what at least in my opinion this is what we want everyone else can disagree with me though I agree with you 100 um my question is though now how to well how does the committee feel and how should we send this back and John I don't know if you heard anything no no I mean I I agree I agree I agree with you know my my committee members here I mean you know you know part of the chat are all voting members shall be residents of the town of Dartmouth I think you said you literally start tying your hands uh when you get into uh you know when you look at like four five six seven type of deal for you know who can be appointed that type of deal is you know who we could appoint here you know who the who's going to represent from the Town Administrator you know that you got to make sure that all these people living in the town I mean I think you're you're hand strapping yourself here type of deal and I agree with Shannon's comment that you know you're sitting here and you're saying the indigenous people are not going to be voting members well you know we're trying to bring them into in into into the into The Fray here and I think they need to be so and my I somewhere down the line I just think it you know you know this maybe the select board is going to take another look at this I don't know that that's you know probably what needs to happen Dr Jenkins yeah you know I feel like this has also been a weird process whereby it's a joint committee but it's like it's a game of operator right like the the select board puts something together then it comes to us and then we say here are the issues like right it goes back to them I mean maybe we need to have a conversation with them or um you know maybe we just need to take a step back and think about what what what it is that we really truly want um I I don't know yeah I mean I think they need to take another stab at us and my only other question is when you look at the membership okay again go to six and seven what you know those are community members one appointed by the select board one appointed by us for a three-year term it says nothing one through five the select board school committee historical it doesn't say how long those terms are for unless I'm missing something it says seven members but you know one through five do not have a time on the uh for the for the appointment so we you know you come to for discussion purposes you come to this time next year now do those five people have to be reappointed or are they still good because there's nothing in this charge that says how long they have to to be you're stuck there forever yeah you can never ever step down [Laughter] Charlie on the MTA never return you know well I think we send it back to the select board yeah and if they want to put it on one of their agendas you know we don't you know I don't see a joint meeting coming up anytime soon so maybe between the five of us two of us could could attend to share our thoughts of what where we discussed this afternoon that's right I can do that sounds good I think they let me know when they're gonna put it on their agenda yeah so so do you want a motion to send this back or with just the consensus we're going to send it back I I think just yeah we want to do it right I mean yeah I think you want to do it right yeah agreed yeah agreed yeah I'm good thank you and I I think at this point maybe I turn it over to no exact or save them oh we go into school choice you get new business yes under new business I was going to turn over um just making sure we don't miss that yeah yeah yes authorization uh of the use of school choice funds yes and so um I think in your packet I know that uh Kate had sent you a copy of the request from from Mr Carly regarding authorization of use of school choice funds and I know that that you know that the town's decision not to support the 200 000 annual technology replacement article in June um they they decided not to fund that item and because of that we need to we need to ask the school committee to approve 75 000 to purchase technology Hardware to support our one-to-one computers and that is for our fresh incoming freshmen Mr galashaw is here and if you have any questions regarding that purchase he's happy to jump in and answer them and I have some information as well I'll assume Mr galashad that this is for the purchase or the lease of uh Chromebooks for our incoming freshmen for the new Freshman Class the ones coming from eighth grade up we usually get on a life cycle replacement for the fifth graders and the ninth graders but given the shifting of money and what happened we kind of shuffled a little bit for the fifth graders and but we really do need the the ninth graders for their career in the high school it's the purchase yeah and I know you know this but I feel like if Mr Kylie here was were here he would say that you know that he is concerned about dipping into school choice funds to use toward purchases that are going to be ongoing and that aren't necessarily uh purchased it's not necessarily money that we're going to be able to depend on currently we have students enrolled in school choice and we've registered at this point in time we've registered another 39.

hmm how successful was the job fair you had earlier um that yeah so that was for Paris and substitute teachers or guest teachers as we like to call them and I I was very happy with the results um if you had asked me before it started I said boy if we get 20 people through the door that's going to be a good day we had over 40 people show up so that was amazing yeah so we've already I've started I've processed reviewing video interviews and looking at applications for I usually do that for our subs and then I hand those off to Chris and he reaches out to them to get their paperwork going so we're probably somewhere close to a dozen new Subs added specifically from that fair and in terms of Perez like right before right after we had two or three pairs that we hired um right around that time but then since then there are I think eight or nine people currently going through the interview process in our district where they're just waiting for their second interviews and those may have happened so I'm hoping before the end of the week I've got some paperwork to add to our parents so if those all work out pretty well we'll be close to half of the the needs that we had filled in terms of the paraprofessionals job coaches was another one where we've had difficulty there's much there's only a handful of those positions but I think again there's a couple people on the on the docket that were very close to filling those positions so that's very exciting and then as I mentioned given the success of the fair in June that's why I'm plant gonna plan to do another one here in August and uh hopefully if we have even I'm thinking you know now we're getting close to the start of the school year people are back they're done with vacations maybe they're thinking hey I do want to do this or you may have some teachers who haven't yet landed somewhere and they're looking for some way to get their foot in the door it's a great opportunity again to promote it in August here and get them in the door so um yeah it was very successful so that's why yeah we're looking to do it again and if we have similar success we'll be very close to having our needs met great great all right I hope that this you know provides you the overview I I didn't think it was fair to have the conversation about how we announced things without the board having the background on how we actually do things um so and I will provide you that more detailed document as well thank you Jeff thank you broken all right a couple of uh quick ones that have already come to the board changes the student parent handbook this has been sent to the board multiple times in advance of today really uh Scott has worked with uh the folks that had up discipline in the buildings the administrators that are responsible for that really the only change that we're bringing to the board in the student handbook for this year is related to personal electronic devices really changing the default that the devices are not are silenced and are not being used in instructional settings unless the teacher gives or the staff member in that space gives explicit permission to do so along with that then is the changes in the discipline section of the student handbook for students that don't follow those expectations so any questions around this for me or Scott one thing in there you say cell phones what about iPads yeah it's uh any kind of personal electronic device but do you think iPads needs to be an electronic device you think it needs to be spelled out I I don't but I'm happy to add it if the board feels like we we tend not to name brands like like yeah that's true you know it's a tablet like I could include tablets but tablet yeah um but really the the device that's causing us the most angst right now are mobile phones okay but really anything that they're bringing in that's an electronic device whether it's a phone a Game Boy like they're going to the way back machine [Music] you know I I reaching way back there in an old box in their basement uh any of that anything that is a personal electronic device would qualify under this under this clause in the handbook um how is this go assuming that the board takes action and approves this tonight how will this be communicated to students so it will the first step is updating the actual handbook uh and then it will be communicated as students return at the start of the Year within both buildings by the administration in our student expectation so it'll be presented as a whole but then uh we're also going to work with our teaching staff we have kind of a template for uh the teacher syllabi that will make sure that there's a a prompt in that for teachers to include that in their syllabus and discuss that in their individual classroom settings as well and then I'm sure Courtney and Irwin will have it in all of their parent things that go out as well so that families can help us and reinforce this as well so how much teacher input was made in the final draft that we have it was sent out to the entire staff and anybody could have offered feedback I met specifically with the DGA leadership and they provided their feedback in a document much of it we accepted in this not all of it but we took a great deal of feedback between there was like three versions along the way that led into this final version so we're confident that if we put this out there that will have a hundred percent buy-in from our teachers in no uh I I don't believe in anything that we put out there we'll have 100 buy-in in anything but this is what was asked for in a way that it was asked for that the default B that the devices are not being used rather than every individual teacher needing to communicate their expectations for that space so that was really the key was uh you know and every teacher is going to have a a spectrum of what they're more comfortable with in their space there are some teachers that are using cell phones every day to pull their students and to gather feedback and those kinds of things and there are some teachers that would prefer that they didn't exist right and we're going to have that full range of use inside of a classroom ultimately a teacher needs to be able to communicate what their expectations are and then enforce that but it was clear in our meeting with the DGA and the feedback that we got through the hybrid block schedule that our staff would prefer that the default is that the devices not making noise and that a student is not interacting with it by default now how a teacher manages that in their space is going to be very different depending on the teacher the physical layout of the space the students that they have there and the instructional goals of that individual class or the the course as a whole okay if I take my Board of Education member hat off and I just where my parent hat I'm extremely elated with this policy and I think I think a lot of parents in the community have been looking for a policy like this and I know that this was brought to fruition by teacher concern and I'm I applaud Hank for addressing this in a creative manner through the handbook I think that's the proper way to address this and I think this is a positive step in the right direction to give teachers more control back in their classroom without having to be deemed the unpopular teacher who doesn't have a popular policy within their classroom so hopefully this will be well received by our teachers and I'm pretty darn sure that it's going to be well received by our parents and just a reminder the hand the reason we're putting it in the handbook is it allows us administratively to be more Nimble so if we find like we didn't go far enough with this and we're not seeing behaviors change or improve the the way with the approval of the student handbook allows the administration to make changes and then come back later to have the board approve them so if we need to make a change in real time we can or if this sat in board policy remember that process is very board driven right so it would have to go like three months true like yeah it'd be like a two-month period to make a change if come like October we feel like wow this is not enough or this didn't go far or we didn't consider this setting or whatever that we can make the adaptation in real time and then come back to the board to get it approved under further discussion but allows us to be a lot more responsive and proactive when it sits in the student handbook rather than in board policy standpoint can you just walk us through so I'm John Smith in Mrs bar Thomas's classroom and I look at my phone for the first time walk us through what the discipline process looks like so that's spelled out here uh right behind Scott's head [Laughter] so obviously we want to uh reinforce with the student the expectations explain to them what's their side assume and whenever we talk about discipline there's two terms we always talk about frequency and severity right so it it is very situational dependent right so you would expect that the teacher would follow up with that student that individual student either in the moment or you know pull them aside during class or after class and reinforce the expectations in their classroom now what the student does next determines on how you progress there like if the student is like Fu I can do whatever I want well we're not even talking about cell phones anymore like we're talking about insubordination and behavior like where cell phone is not the issue right now right so we would expect that a student would be like thanks for reminding me or I got it or you know whatever oops you know like something like that and that their behavior would change right now if it doesn't happen again for months and months at a time it kind of like resets if five minutes later the student has their device out okay like they have escalated that because of frequency not necessarily severity right once it reaches that point where the intervention that the teacher is providing in the classroom is not working or being effective our expectations the next step is involving the family allowing the parents the opportunity to know it's becoming a distraction that I've talked to your child things are not improving this is what we saw in the classroom can you please help us get this back you know so that your child is productive in the classroom we're hoping that that resolves it and then it all resets right if that doesn't work then it starts moving through the discipline process in the building where it gets a referral to the Dean's office the Dean's office somebody in the Dean's office a Dean is going to meet with that student try to figure out why it is that this isn't uh getting resolved take a look at what's happening is this happening in multiple classrooms or just in this classroom to see if there's a larger concern it's just being demonstrated through the misbehavior through a cell phone uh at that point maybe the counseling department needs to get involved there's all these different Pathways that could follow if the behaviors don't change then we're going to move into more of our Progressive discipline pieces which are laid out on this second page here right which is where you're going to move into things like detentions involvement in the path program if you know any of these things if they continue to go on on and on and on the outcomes escalate and that's what's kind of laid out here thanks for doing that yeah so any other questions on this one all right so that's the approval that's in there tonight when the board approves that that's the change athletic activities handbook there that's been provided to the board no changes from last year being recommended at this point we just asked the board to reapprove it because then it does both the student handbook and the activities athletic handbook have more Authority after the board has approved them Freedom of Information request we've received them and have responded to them they're available on our website if you search foia's and that's it for me thank you Dr thiely the battery is low oh moving to the consent agenda before we vote on approving the consent agenda is there any agenda item a board member would like to pull out of the consent agenda for further discussion hearing none then can I get a motion for the Board of Education to approve the consent agenda as presented which includes the Personnel report appointment certified appointment Administration transfer position classified appointment classified B Personnel report retirement Administration resignation certified retirement classified out in that way but I'm sure you'll hear a lot about sassad over the next year as we have to hire several key positions there for the long term Terry any report from the Education Foundation um yeah just a real quick um our meeting is Wednesday so this is just the last month our meeting uh has changed to South High in one of the meeting rooms so we will be meeting there I think from now on and unless something comes up and there's a conflict or whatever and um we joined the National Association of the education foundations and we're very excited about what they have to offer for us they've got webinars and different things that we can participate in and Kara has joined us as one of our members representing the board and so uh um like I said we're still looking for more members so if any but he knows anyone that would want to be on our board by all means send them to Julia Beckman and that would be on our website so uh ever met thanks Terry and then Ken from the Illinois Association a quick question on that doctor you just mentioned the north The Chiller at North Side so and I think the policy reads a minimum obtaining a minimum of three beds what happens when there are not when you can't secure three bids as long as you show an effort to contact vendors and say here's our specs can you bid this uh not bid it but provide a a quote competitive quotes for that anywhere between 50 and the three hundred thousand dollar Mark then that suffices for the State Board accounts okay thank you Dr Phillips the second one first reading to that teacher appreciation Grant this is based upon a requirement by the state of Indiana the Indiana Department of Education has a due date for us to update this policy or not but we do have to provide them with a board approved policy annually and so there was an additional paragraph added in this one and it simply gives us a May provision to add some flexibility and statute allows this to potentially take some of that grant money and use it for a mentor program to teachers and so Dr palick any additional comment to how that could work now this is just more flexibility added to the policy and we have to submit it by September 15th and it is tied to the staff performance the previous year so we get the amount by December 5th from the state and then we have 20 days to execute and delineate the funds to teachers but this does allow the flexibility and so of course this cash stipend up to 10 for Teacher mentors and we'll get a good idea of our ADM account and look at that amount and see so up to 10 and um maybe we don't plan on going over that so it just adds more flexibility mentors are very important to that and this actually gives us so many we've not had before to be able to pay mentors a more respectable amount of the work that they do okay thank you Dr plate and then as Mrs Wilton indicated at our last meeting we did have a first reading on several policies from Neola and and were designated that as volume 35 number one and board members already have number two have been reading through those as well I'm just going to quickly go through the the names of those policies and it was a I appreciated the the board taking the initiative to have the meeting that they did at five o'clock today because it just gave them an opportunity to raise questions bounce those off of each other and for us to listen to those concerns and and have a chance to take it back and maybe do some do some revisions but by laws and policies with zero uh 131.1 oath which is the technical correction uh public participation at board meetings what we're doing there we'll have a recommendation uh in a little bit for some changes to the school board meeting agenda already that will start to um it includes some public participation pieces and then hopefully we'll have the policy aligned to that as we get through with everything personal background checks references mandatory reporting of certain convictions and and abuses shout out substantial shot abuse and arrests and just a quick note you see three policies there a reminder to those who've been paying attention to that we have administrator policy we have certified staff policy in terms of of individuals covered under our collective bargaining agreement and then support staff so oftentimes we'll have a policy that actually ends up in three different chapters interscholastic Athletics uh was we have some recommendations there and there is some some pieces that are tied to transgender girls on athletic teams for sports that was a very specific piece of legislation that came out last year and it was a grievous procedure for violation of that 2432 driver education in case we have that particular program programs for high ability students adjunct teachers just another way to flexibly or gives us additional flexibility to add teachers to our staff public hearings before the commencement of public or collective bargaining and a public meeting before ratification supplemental payments for teachers the way that we go about doing that the reporting of student progress is that written reports is that parent-teacher conferences Etc suspension and expulsion of students and just what that policy looks like and the reasons that students might be suspended or expelled required ADM accounts this is a process in terms of us being able to count the number of students enrolled and then that drives or generates our tuition reimbursement travel payment and reimbursement for individuals that receive that policy on volunteers and how we screen volunteers our system and that was a continuation just that recommendation and then a personal background checks similar to other background checks we do for employees is what do we do for those who are providing Services through contract with us since they're going to be on school grounds school calendar just mentioned some things there based upon changes in legislation a school day it defines that school safety talks about the process we go through to ensure safety in our school system and then a wellness policy being reviewed that covers everything from Food Service to physical education to things that are done in the classroom Transportation changes and gives a definition of appropriate Vehicles besides buses that can be used for transportation I think that is it so you see a long list there are board members have been reviewing and asking questions about and again have the opportunity tonight to talk through some policies and we'll take the questions and the information they provided and make some revisions and get that back out to them in a pretty quick period of time because our next board meeting is three weeks right so we want to make sure that they've had a chance to digest that and ask any other questions and we'll make that those revisions public as well thank you any questions for the board before okay all right we are on to public comments we have Mr niamoller who has provided a Columbus address so thank you very much for that and if you wouldn't mind just when you get up to the microphone let us know the topic you'd like to cover a little bit context please thank you foreign hello yeah here we are uh yeah about policy um I went online looked into some of your policies and uh I found maybe some inconsistencies so I'll just go through those um policy number 2464 um I think it's one of the program for high ability students and uh under the heading is under that program is the heading the plan must include the following components and there are several items uh drawing your attention to Item B and I think I've got this accurate the plan must include a student identification systems multi-faceted assessments to ensure students are not identified by traditional assessments due to underachievement are included now the way I translate that is uh the program for high ability students must include some low ability students to me that that seems inconsistent the program's name if if that's the program's name seems deceptive if I'm reading that right and it doesn't appear to be based on ability it's based on something else entirely now moving on to item f the plan must increase the number of participants in high ability student programs who are from racial and ethnic groups that have been underrepresented in those programs okay if selecting High ability students is based on race it is not based on ability again the name of the program seems deceptive furthermore selection based on race is racism you can't favor One race without discriminating against another furthermore it's the kind of affirmative action racism that the Supreme Court of the United States just ruled unconstitutional so you might want to check with Neola about this recent very recent legal change um furthermore finally you already have an anti-racism policy in number 1662 under anti-race harassment so there appears to be a situation where you have one policy that violates another contradicts another just my opinion thank you bingo thank you Mr Mueller I don't think we've ever had anybody that perfectly on time before here okay Dr Roberts items for approval tonight yeah let me get to my pages here have quite a few items for you and so we'll run through those in terms of what we're asking for approval for this evening first of all minutes of the board meeting from June 12th and then you also had an executive session on July 10th the consultant in just reviewing governance and those kinds of things supplemental contracts always have a list of those for you quite a bit this year or this particular time claims in payroll we have the claims for July 17th of a little over 3 of 3.7 and a half million dollars pre-runs for June 1st through June 30th so the entire month of June total almost 16 million dollars and then from a payroll standpoint over 5.6 million dollars in some detail there in terms of the dates that that covered and reasons as to why some of those things were happening so for example the June 16th payroll was only a two-day pay for nine month employees due to the end of the school year whereas the June 30th payroll was the first summer one with no bus contracts or nine-month employee wages so just some variations there perhaps versus a typical payroll additionally they were asking for approval of the three-year calendar for 2024 through 2027.

so um it's been it's been quite a ride over the last 15 years and I've kind of been a part of that so uh the good thing for me is that I kind of understand the role of a food service director working and I have a lot of relationships with the Indiana Department of Ed so you know that's kind of my role is to support the directors and support the clients through you know lots of the requirements regulations so on and so forth so what do we do what do we do for Brown County um so we basically made sure we prepare Easter breakfast we served lunch we run an hour of our program we've also done an apology grade things for uh you know catering services for the district as well um we prepare cooked Foods on site many of our meals are made from scratch so that's really big on is is training and developing of the associates we recruit we hire we train and as well as making sure that every meal that is served is compliant that's the big thing so that Brown County can be reimbursed for those needs so this is Brown County by the Numbers uh so as you see here uh for this year so this is for the 22-23 school year prior year um so the team served 110 968 breakfasts 179 that almost 180 000 lunches um as far as additional Revenue that would be your a la carte and your catering at uh almost 105 104 682 um we've also uh received almost fifteen thousand dollars in Grants from no kid I'm hungry to support your breakfast program and then lastly I was looking at the numbers just because a lot of times boards like to understand the participation and where that is so we took over in 1920 school year so in looking at your numbers from 1819 school year old way to this year you've had an overall without covet right so let's not look at covid you have a three percent increase in overall lunch participation which I think is pretty impressive since you have an open campus at the high school and you've had a declining enrollment so overall if you look at 18 19 verses this year we're still running at a three percent increase so what is the national school lunch program well it is a federally funded program by the USDA um that all public schools participate you know in this so does everybody understand I'm going to ask this question every month the Brown County Schools have to send a claim to the Department of Education to be a reimbursed for all the meals served in that month and so for breakfast and lunch would you say on average you're your your reimbursements about 80 000 so with that said that that money is supposed to cover the cost of your food the cost of your labor indirect costs um equipment upgrades so on and so forth uh and so a lot of that you know and then you have to make sure the meal is compliant we have to make sure that we give a variety right we want to give all these kids the fresh fruits and vegetables all these different things um so it's it is a it's a tough job that's all I have to say falling down are a great team they do they do a lot to these kids um any questions on the requirements so one of the new things that you'll see that's been in the news a lot is that so back in 2012 they kind of did an adjustment to the meal pattern compliance of the national school lunch program and they've done it in targets so this year that everybody's getting ready to go to the second set of calorie and sodium and uh I think it's sodium and sugar targets which is obviously quite a challenge and a lot of people are you know lobbying for and I think that's one of the things that people don't understand about the national school lunch program and the food service directors is that they have to work in a lot of unknown um and so you know are we doing it are we not doing it did the government figure it out yet are they lobbying oh just kidding we're going back fourth and so what what happens is it makes it really hard for manufacturers so from a supply chain standpoint that too goes up and down um and so that's the I would say over the last couple years that's probably been the biggest challenge as far as the national school lunch program um is concerned so financials this is I think a lot of people are very interested in that so when we when we bid this account um we put a 29 000 investment and so that was we were going to invest 29 000 that was to upgrade smallware signage um any equipment needs so on and so forth um and this is inclusive of yep transition costs safety equipment marketing signage all that good stuff so your when we basically when we build a performer you know a financial kind of portfolio of what we think the government can do we put the guarantee of financial return of 25 000 and I think 25 105.

our white students have stayed the same and again that concern with our special education students with some increase in the percentage of students that are scoring below proficiency so we switch to to math I'm in that same kind of thinking we had seven of 13 schools that had subgroups school-wide that met the 10 growth goal in math so you can see this is just a little lower than where we were with Ela so we're eager to begin implementation of our new math adoptions so you can see subgroup wise that are again are black Hispanic and El students uh have the the most subgroups school-wide when you go down a level to specific grade levels or cohorts 135 different grade levels or cohorts didn't meet the 10 growth goal in math again with our black students and Hispanic students leading the way in terms of of growth the the 10 growth goal when we look at Proficiency in math this is similar to the state of Indiana and similar to Marion County and that we're seeing larger gains in math relative to post-pandemic proficiency and part of that is because there was the greatest lost in proficiency pre-pandemic to post pandemic so we're making gains a little bit faster in math again multiracial and the sped subgroup are subgroups that we need to continue to pay close attention to but you can see we have growth in black Hispanic white are free and reduced and Els as we look at below proficiency all green here we have moved every subgroup students out of the below Proficiency in math so just some Key summary analysis points at the the district level um the progress toward the 10 percent uh growth board goal um is occurring in all of our subgroups in both Ela and math except with the exception of sped um and you you'll see how we're addressing that in a future slide there is still a significant Gap in proficiency levels among our racial subgroups this is a gap that continues we have narrowed that Gap slightly for Hispanic students particularly in ela but the Gap has widened in math so our white students in terms of proficiency have grown at a faster rate than our students of color and so this is certainly something that we're concerned about and working with our individual schools around this last bullet point I think is important for you as a board in bringing two of your board goals together at the school level there's a really strong correlation between our rigor appraisal scores and the 10 growth goal I mean we see this both in Ela and in math when a school reaches a 10.0 on the 12 point scale that correlates very strongly to many more subgroups that are achieving the 10 growth goal and it makes sense because the rigor appraisal is all about core instruction it's not about special programs it's not about extra tutoring it's about what's happening in the classroom between students and teachers and so it makes good sense that the schools that are scoring the highest on our rigor appraisals would have the most growth in in terms of the 10 percent growth goal and that's why I think it's really important that you set your board goal this year for the rigor appraisal to be 10.0 and that's an increase over where we've been in previous years as we look at our next steps um and these are the 30 000 of you Viewpoint because we have very specific next steps with each School based on their data uh but that first one really is about continuing our school specific support our schools are in different places in terms of core instruction and they need different types of support and so again supporting them to achieve that 10.0 or higher as we're working towards our 10 percent growth the next one is a really specific one around an instructional strategy that is part of our instructional model part of our teacher evaluation model helping students examine their reasoning and this is really important particularly as we begin new math adoption K-12 that we've got to be focused on reasoning in mathematics versus computation in mathematics and so this will be a really important one for our district and for each of our classrooms in terms of the delay the continued focus on the science of reading implementation in all of our grade levels and this is more than just phonics the science of reading is about how all the strands of reading come together so it is a big push on Phonics in our early grades but we've got to focus on that continued comprehension in our upper grades the next one is the one specific to special education our principals need some support in how to best utilize all staff the beauty of special education is there's additional staff that comes with special education the challenge is as a building principle how do you best utilize all staff to make sure that we're giving our students including our special education students access to the most rigorous core instruction that's how you see growth is rigorous core instruction and so our special education students must have that support through the additional staff that comes with that program in a general education classroom and so co-teaching is a point of emphasis of our professional development this summer so that we really can continue to form those Partnerships between general education teachers special education teachers to provide rigorous core instruction the next one um we can see in our data particularly as we look at our data relative to the state of Indiana and to Marion County that our Equitable student outcomes action plan is producing results for us we saw growth in every one of our subgroups black Hispanic El free and reduce in both Ela and math I mean that's unique in Marion County it's Unique in the state of Indiana so we know that that focus on Equitable student outcomes is making a difference in terms of the proficiency rates for our students and you can see in the 10 growth goals that are Black and Hispanic students are growing in more cells which is what we wanted to see this year and then the last one is we we really need to get back to our 95 percent attendance rate attendance equals student achievement so we've we've begun a comprehensive plan to improve student attendance so that we can get back to the 95 attendance rate which is also one of your board goals for this year so I'd be happy to entertain any discussion or questions word questions and comments or Mr noterer yeah I do I have one could you please expound on the parallel from the equity audit and um and the iLearn results what we are planning to see or the the bridge if yeah and there's lots of bridges there's lots of places that there's connection between um specific data that came out of the equity audit that became an action plan so I'll give you an example our keynote speaker at our Summit this morning was Dr Dominique Smith who's the author of the restorative practices Playbook and his message to our 300 that were in attendance this morning was really about how do we keep relationships strong with students so that they're in class and that we aren't excluding students for reasons that are unnecessary so talking about discipline in particular and rethinking the way that that we look at disciplines so that students are in class so that was data that came out of our Equity audit that became an action step in our Equitable student outcomes action plan now we're providing the professional development and we would expect to see more students in class rather than sitting in the office sitting at home sitting in ISS when you're in class for rigorous Court instruction you're going to learn when you're sitting in the assistant principal's office maybe not as much and so that's a real specific example of how the two connect each other thank you for that I had a question first of all thank you this is a lot of great information I'm just trying to better understand the data just from my own understanding so an example would be from all of our groups say you have a student in one racial subgroup that's also in special education are they counted as two different separate data points okay yes so a student would be counted by race yes it would be counted by their free and reduced status if that applies they would also be counted either special education or El if that applies as well so for some students they may be counted in four different subgroups okay thanks for helping me understand the overlap and then my second question what are some things that you attribute to the slower growth in the special education group are there some kind of things you're seeing that might be related to the um I guess it was the proficiency kind of sliding a little bit sure I'm going to ask Mrs Niemeyer to come to the the microphone one of the concerns that we have and and this gets into the technical pieces of how IEPs are written but that students are not pulled out of core instruction to receive special education services we want our special education staff to push in to core instruction in a general education setting so when you pull students out they're missing instruction and so that's a piece that we're really supporting our principles around how to best utilize their staff to make sure that we're pushing in as much as possible what would you add to that space okay yeah thank you for that explanation so it kind of goes along with the next steps that you mentioned about the um co-teaching yes okay thank you thank you so much for this very valuable report I um similarly I have a couple of questions about the data on slides three as well as six can you I'm just trying to figure out of the 147 individual grade bands what is the denominator there I'm getting 588 is that accurate it's actually higher than that and so it's over 900.

and so we have to think about that moving forward yeah [Music] well unfortunately I you know they didn't give us the money um I think this was you know what we need to do in order to support our students so I would certainly make a motion to approve the uh additional use of school choice the use of school choice funds in the amount of seventy five thousand dollars to purchase technology Hardware to support one-to-one computing any other discussion about this Mr Nunes yeah just I mean kind of on that that same subject and in in such in all services just uh a thank you to uh because we haven't met since then but a thank you to town meeting for supporting our budget with the amendment we made you know that was made and and such to uh to at least kind of bring us up a little bit yeah you know I mean and understand if if my memory is any good this 7 75 here and there's 50 that we took for uh supplies back when we were doing the budget and the adjustments we had to make so you know that fortunately we have it to use but it's you know you're using you know this money for one-time purchases you know type of deal so it's you know not a good use but that's neither here nor there yeah doctor so I'll just follow up to Mr news I also want to say thank you to Mr Nunes for um putting together those motions um and sort of leading the effort at Town Meeting thank you my pleasure one especially when they tried to when they tried to dip into the kindergarten that was fun I'm sorry right my yeah good job thank you anyone else no you know it's not a good use but certainly necessary yeah yeah and you know and yeah I mean we can't go back in time we know that our students have to have access to technology just as if as they had access to textbooks in the past so times have changed in the way our students access content is very different today than it was when at least when I I'll speak for myself when I was in school right so we have a motion we have a second we had some nice discussion um all in favor hi that was it passes unanimously to authorize the expenditure of school choice funds and the amount of up to 75 000 purchase technology Hardware to support the incoming freshmen in their learning so thank you thank you um so we next on our new business we have a superintendent's update but I don't know if there's anything else additional that you wanted to um talk about I know we talk I don't know if this is offline or online perhaps um having a retreat or a working group for the I think that that's important to bring that up that we have discussed individually with school committee members that we do want to identify some dates that work for all of us to participate in a school committee Retreat probably more for me than you best and I are new on the school in this role so we could use some support from all of you the veterans on the school committee okay um should we how how would we coordinate that does anyone have any particular preference or weeks that I think if you just emailed Kate some dates she can be happy to coordinate our dates for us and then we can figure out a location we'd talk today Shannon and I mentioned uh Dr Jenkins and I mentioned maybe looking at the library and is it traditionally one day of the week in particular it I I'm not sure traditionally what it is here in Dartmouth we've normally what we've normally done is had it like at night at like you know again you know school's not or if we do it like the beginning of September one school has started depending what everybody's schedule is we've done it in like you know five o'clock at night uh at Bush Street just uh and how many hours are we looking at I think we can we can create a three two to three depending depending I would say three hours would you know would probably depending you know I vaguely remember having one on a Saturday morning I was going to say Saturday but I didn't want to be the one to say it first [Laughter] yeah just because well I mean sometimes a Saturday can relieve you of of some of the other responsibilities you might be concerned about so okay so we'll we'll email some dates and and firm up uh uh propose a date and time thank you I guess what would be helpful is at least are we looking at August to September just when I'm throwing up I'm thinking August yeah I'm thinking August yeah I think before school starts would make sense yeah yes I think before our September meeting yep I agree great excellent great um I actually don't have anything to report uh other than just anecdotally I dropped my daughter off at uh volleyball camp this morning and picked her up at noon and um the kid the kiddos were just so excited and happy and giggly and just with their little backpacks on it was really great to see all the the the students who were in the summer programs and of course the kids that were you know doing the camp were sweaty and exhausted and I'll speak for my daughter hungry and thirsty afterwards so um uh but it was so it looked like they had a lot of fun but other than that I don't know if anyone on the committee has anything you know why you knew they were why they were tired you know they weren't bored oh right right right right right exactly yeah literally dripping sweaty from the volleyball anyway but yeah not the student not the extended year students but um anyone anyone else on the committee have anything I just update that I'm sure I just have one thing and you know as usual the standard times over the past few weeks have started you know when they have room and whatever uh just started posting uh their Fall Championships of teams that they that they normally put together for uh winter and spring Sports so we've had a number of Dartmouth students in there already so that was that's good to see excellent I just want to I think just reiterate that there are some great things going on here this summer and if you have a chance to go and take a peek at what's going on here I think it would be worth your while because the kids really are happy and you have a lot of Staff here working through the summer so uh that just demonstrates their commitment to your community excellent so I guess if no one else has anything to add we can um next we're meeting next uh on August 21st right at five o'clock that's our next I keep looking at Mr noons with you're like the resident a shaking of the head or you know nodding um so we we meet again August 21st we're going to email Kate some dates and times that work for us come to consensus on a retreat time which will be a great time to talk about the year to come and um and relationship building as well all of that good stuff so I would entertain emotion just go ahead Mr that meeting that band camp is going on that week that'll be the kids supper hour but there'll be a lot of activity oh on the 21st on the 21st okay good it'll kind of set the tone you know when you see if you know people stop pulling up there's a lot of cars yeah yeah yeah what's going on yeah okay thank you all right yeah exactly so I will um entertain a motion to adjourn so moved second any discussion all in favor aye unanimous meeting oh your summer everybody and I apologize for being here [Music] thank you [Music] thank you [Music]

so moved athletic director Jeske basically offering a cross-country uh trip for Mr Vince Neil who is the head coach as a premier meet that they offer um so it's one that definitely Vince would like to have his students participating it also prepares them for the state meet this is third year in a row maybe they've done this yeah experienced it will sometimes with the kids as well excellent and Pappas yes vote Yes a thief yes Hemphill yes Nolan yes uh Motion in a second required to discuss and approve the proposed revisions discussed last month to the elementary school handbook trees Coco back is here principal at Country Trails in case there's any questions that you might have after reviewing them I think we anybody have any questions after what we talked about last month no Pappas yes vote Yes a thief yes Hempfield yes Nolan yes a motion a second required to discuss and approve the proposed revisions discussed last month in the Middle School handbook second again Matt newquist principal at Prairie knows this year in the event that you might have some questions for him anybody yeah we're good go for it vote Yes a thief yes hemp Phil yes Pappas yes Nolan yes uh a motion and second are required to discuss and approve the proposed revisions discussed last month to the high school handbook so moved second again uh principal pogorski's here in the event that you might have some questions regarding that from last month and I'll just ask to clarify presumably there were no changes recommended between last month and this month for all three levels all right Mandy a thief yes info yes Pappas yes vote Yes Nolan yes uh Motion in a second required to discuss and approve the Nia executive board ballot so moved second if you recall last month um we've brought this forward there's only one person running for it as a district administrator or one uh in terms of report members so it's really you guys to decide if you would like to make action for the vote that they're requesting on ad years I don't think there's any reason to not do what they're requesting right I agree I agree yeah Hemphill yes Pappas yes vote Yes a thief yes Nolan yes uh a motion and second are required to discuss and approve that tentative Northern Kane Regional Vocational system efe budget so moved second a Dana flug Andrew who is efe director or here to kind of walk you through the budget and take any questions that you might have before you approve it so tonight we're presenting to you the fy2410 at a budget I'm asking you to formally approve this tentative budget public notice will go on the newspaper tomorrow and then I'll be on display for 30 days we'll have it here at the district office too if anybody wants to look at it and then I just wanted to kind of point out joint annual budgets which is what Northern Kane is technically considered at the state they have to have their budgets approved by September 1st um normal school regular school districts don't have to have theirs till October so because of the September 1st deadline we have to do theirs a month earlier than ours so we do their tentative in July and they're Final in August and then next month you'll have our tentative and then our final the following so I just want to kind of point that out why we're doing theirs and not ours um northern Kane County Regional Vocational system efe 110 is another name for it it consists of four different schools so u46 D300 d301 and d303 we kind of combine all of our assets together so we don't all have to have every program out there within like every school we just kind of figure out who's got what and then that's how they basically the collaborative efforts to get them to share more resources and give more opportunities for our kids um this next slide kind of shows you the flow of funds so the State Board of Education gets all the money and then it flows to the Kane County Educational Service region which then flows to the northern Kane County educate Regional Vocational system and then that flows into the four school districts that are part of that um so this slide kind of shows you all the programs we have offered between all the different schools um their CTE programs um basically we were enhancing and trying to strengthen the current programs here we have there's been no new ones added and no none of them have been removed since last year are we and our students going to have access to any more of them this year yeah well not this year but the future industry we have education starting pre-teaching interest okay so new this year we do have summer internship opportunities that we took advantage of and were able to get up these pictures are actual pictures of our students doing these opportunities out in the field they're mainly for the summer between Junior and Senior year after they've completed two courses of program of that study to qualify for these internships approximately 52 people participated last year and this year we got up to 90. so the enrollment's grown in that and then really District 300 301 and u-46 were the only three that participated in those numbers correct we had quite a few this year are going from 52 to 90 was a great move these are all paid internships for students so we just had two more students start this morning uh for at Alta a heavy equipment operator in South Elgin for the automotive program uh some of the big highlights we had this year one of our students from 301 was in the welding program they were a two-week internship at Elgin sweeper at the kind of the beginning of week two decided to go in and say well what would it take for me to be here the rest of the summer kind of on his own to advocate for himself and the the supervisor said well you want to stay for the rest of Summer he said well yeah can it happen uh the supervisor went into the HR office and asked if they could do it and they extended the student with a paid position from uh June 19th all the way through August 11th so he has a paid spot there uh they've really been impressed with our students overall throughout the entire region and looking at I mean these are three students that will more than likely have a paid job when they graduate here next week so a lot of good opportunities overall their health care uh I know Dr Nolan you're always looking at our health care side of things we were able to start a program this summer for pharmacy technicians so we had 10 students right now that piloted the program we got all 10 of them licensed as pharmacy technicians and they completed 40 hours of training along with 24 hours of Hands-On work at Advocate Sherman this year in that program and we already have another three or four hospitals that are looking to do the same thing next summer so more expansion they're coming in front like the hospital Farm they were in the hospital pharmacy yeah so they did the 40 hours of training with a pharmacy technician and with a pharmacist during the day and then throughout different hours throughout the three week time they did four hour shifts in the pharmacy so getting an opportunity to do all that so once again paid internships for those opportunities there so overall great great opportunity for students overall with those things in mind um here we have our regional programs that are offered the main goal is to continue to expand and try to get new opportunities the Allied Health Care last year said it was in the fall of 24 but u-46 still has to postpone it so it will be they're shooting for the fall of 25 now but the one right below at the educator one will be coming out this fall um or fall of 24 so that one is definitely coming and then we also have the Dual credit agreements with ECC that are going to start this fall of 23.

Dr Philippe presented that to you at our last meeting as a first reading we have a resolution for Indiana purple star school designations you receive some information in your packets about that it isn't through the Indiana Department of Education schools apply for that designation designation and they need an approved resolution from you in order to be able to upload that and have permission to seek that and that resolution indicates the kinds of things that they're going to do as a commitment to honoring the the military families that are in our community and in our schools we are asking you to adopt the final Bond resolution the hearing that we had at the beginning of the meeting from Dr Phillips is in regards to that just in case some of those Appropriations need to be spent on in this case Schmidt Elementary School we also ask for you to adopt the recommendation of the school board agenda subcommittee Mr Grimes represented that group at our last meeting but Mr major Mr Bryant also a part of that team and they had some specific recommendations one of those about public participation as I indicated earlier approval of an HVAC project change order from Dr Bozeman permission to expend donations received for Columbus North Athletic program so the Columbus North Athletic program actually received a significant donation and is just asking for the ability to deposit that money and to start spending it for for the needs that arise within the athletic programs and then permission to dispose of laptops and desktops we have a number of laptops or desktops that might be recycled or or utilized in different ways maybe a classroom is going to use them and take them apart or or something like that and so we're going to take them out of our service and then put them at other places and so asking for permission to do that I think Mr William Mr Williams had some specific information even included in the in the engine item that went out to you I believe that is it so those are the items that I have for this evening would gladly take any get Dr Roberts you're welcome okay do I have a motion I'd love to have a motion do I have a motion to approve items a through J is presented tonight I move that we approve I uh number three items a through hell Jay oh my God I'm sorry sorry a through a through J uh as presented by Dr Roberts thank you Mr Craig let's drive a second second thank you Logan okay and I wrote on the top of my paper motion and then discussion because I forget that step every time it is open for discussion so tonight the only question I have only one um is I didn't see anything maybe I overlooked it in the board packet about the Columbus North Athletic program donation I just wanted to kind of get an idea as to what what that was and how it would be used other than that I think everything yeah we don't have a lot of the specifics and terms or at least a person doesn't hasn't necessarily given all the information to come through but uh the athletic department we did ask about how that might be used and Mr Lewis gave us some information in terms of uh the day-to-day operating cut operating costs as well as uniform Replacements which when they do that is always a very very large expense and then some equipment repair and updates those are the three things that they were looking to designate the money for any other questions comments I have one for Dr pleake okay I would be remiss if I didn't ask this question so apparently by chance by happenstance our spring break has aligned with IU's the last several years and a concerned parent friend has said it no longer aligns with IUS which is difficult for their family and so can you just remind um remind me our our factors in determining the spring break week that we that we've identified in that calendar and looking at that we did not consult other universities calendars I can tell you that but we did not make a change this is an alignment of the previous year Spring Breaks with that so those were the factors that was given and also looking at the quarters to try to get the balance of days and quarters yep okay okay thank you and uh and then I was I was going to ask Mr Grahams to just remind us all the high points of the school board agenda subcommittee because our intent if we vote this in tonight would be to change our agenda format for August 7th just so we all are reminded of what that would look like so just a handful of highlights that our subcommittee has proposed one being the the frequency of some Cabinet member reports Maybe slightly being altered with Elementary secondary title and special ed giving quarterly reports and one that I'm sure Dr Roberts is thrilled about Dr Roberts altering a state of the corporation on a yearly basis at a school board meeting somewhere near the end of the year our our consent agenda that we are voting on right now to be divided into Old unfinished business and new business um under Dr pleek's HR recommendations giving a having her give us a little summary on what it is we're voting on in terms of resignations new positions um retirement notices those sorts of things and then also a quick head count on where the corporation is currently in terms of open positions eliminating the section that ironically enough that I've always been so fond of board commendations and just to get rid of that transition and any accommodations that board members have be placed at board input review at the end and then lastly and arguably the biggest change being to public comment to now include any topic and and speakers not be limited to Simply agenda item and so that's kind of a quick synopsis of what we're voting on Mr Gramps okay so I have a motion I have a second to approve item three a through J all those in favor please say aye aye oh there's a post okay passes seven zero very good thank you zero six of us here thank you okay Dr Blake I request approval of the human resource recommendations as presented and as presented this evening you have it for you 13 requests for appointments 10 exits and one leave of absent out and just to give you a clarification there on YouTube Orient teacher orientation is Monday and so far we have 57 new teachers that will be joining us wow that leaves us with current seven openings to start the school year wow that's awesome thank you Dr please thank you you have a motion to approve HR resources recommendations I move that we approve the human resources recommendations as presented by Dr pleek second thank you Mr grams thank you Mr major any discussion no okay all those in favor please say aye aye oh there's a post question carries thank you okay board input and review I just like to start on one end I think I did that one now and I'll go back to this site again Mr major you go first yeah I I think for me the most important thing tonight that we did was um e the resolution for the purple star school oh Mr Williams and I both probably enjoyed the very moving Veterans Day program at Richards which we attended I didn't go to other elementary schools because I had a kid at Richards so but I can tell you that there was always tears and eyes for good reasons remembering family and friends that uh maybe were had passed away long ago like a grandparent or um you know a mom or a dad that might be overseas right now and so I think those having that preserved in our schools so that people can reflect on that get a chance to celebrate the their their ancestry in whatever way it may be I think that's very important and it's uh it gives a good nod to those who are willing to fight for us so thank you Mr stone I'd like to express appreciation to uh members of the board and members of the cabinet that help pull together the policy review Public Work session that we had at five this evening I think that was great and I look forward to more opportunities for conversations like that Instagrams I would just like to say thanks to the members of the public the stakeholders that were able to attend our Public Work session earlier and we're in attendance at this evening's meeting and to the gentleman who spoke here this evening thank you foreign so we're under an hour but one of the focuses I want to talk about was the thanks to this board I've been here now six months I believe roughly and I think we're making this stride so where we're going to streamline these policies through and we're going to be able to function and get get moving and moving it all forward and I just want to say thank you to Mr Center for chairing the public engagement I think we've all came and open eyes and understandings and I think we've drawn solutions that are representative of the community so I just want to say appreciate that and to the administration for hosting that public working session on policies so I want to Echo that that the public work session I thought was very valuable time I appreciate the people from the public that came but I also appreciate the conversation we were able to have the other thing is I mentioned this last time but I don't know if I had a date I will mention it again the council for Youth Development is having a developmental relationships Workshop six to eight on August 30th it is free open to the public and also open to school board members it's not again Daniel August 30th it's at the Learning Center and it's a great opportunity for us to see how our teachers and staff are being trained about developmental relationships awesome thank you if I'm back from the Appalachian Trail by then I plan to go very good [Laughter] um we do have yep strategic planning session here July 28th on next so that's next Friday at 9 00 A.M the public engagement subcommittee July 31st 6 p.m and then our next regular school board meeting will be on August 7th at 6 30 in this room and school starts on August 3rd third yes it's almost there two and a half we're almost there just a quick note the strategic planning session that basically the time is going to be spent on facilities and we hope we of course are spending some time and money on two specific buildings right now but we have other needs and we just want to make sure that's all out in the public and you you have a chance to talk about those and figure out some strategy moving forward very good with that oh meeting you Jordan thank you everyone [Music] thank you

so right now your current return for just this school year was 72 719 okay so a lot of times you had at our last board meeting had actually questioned about the renewal and the fees the management and admin fee I think a lot of people were looking you know just kind of trying to understand that so all the money and all the profits that that come to the Food Service fund all of that goes back to Brown County schools that does not come to us so we're paid basically the way our contract works it's a fee contract so that means that we Bill everything so we own the we own the labor but we and we pay for the food but then we Bill all those expenses back to School preparation with our admin management fee what's really great about it is so you can see here that the projected total year fees right is almost sixty thousand dollars okay a lot of school boards will say man without ourselves and save that money but if you look at this you get rebates back so you are required like so it's a law that USDA has mandated that all school districts receive all those volume like volume purchases those rebates back to the school district directly so with our buying power you've received over 127 000 in rebates just for this year so what does that show you shows you that we pay for itself and you get more of the profit on that so sometimes people get very confused with that and I just like to bring that up so that people can understand really there's no risk for the district if anything you're you're gaining from that any questions yes ma'am can you explain how that that looks like we have a large profit but in the same breath we have a challenge of unpaid lunches and we're not allowed to use that money to pay for unpaid lunches correct so the government so that's one of the requirements so they kind of they kind of handcuff you a little bit so what they say is that you know it's up to the board to create policy it's your job and so if you make the policy that your charge policy is hey you know no charging about a cart right but they each kid gets meal regardless what happens is that debt keeps incurring on the student's account the government days that's fine you can do that but you have to have a debt policy meaning that at some point your operations funds have to pay back the Food Service fund for that debt they will not allow the Food Service fund to soak up that debt whereas I think many many moons ago right probably you know back past 2012 and Beyond nobody really paid attention to that they've really started moving that when they realized that these lunch twice you know all these large steps are so it's it is quite challenging to your point is that you know you're trying to balance pain pain them you know feeding the kids but also making sure that you know you can still be sustainable and keep kids does that answer your question yeah what what the board to understand that we need to pay down correct students they won't allow them right so and one thing too is that a lot of people understand is that the food service fund has to be sustainable on its own so for example which your Don could say like you know she submits you know her budget numbers and obviously tax dollars everything come and they have their budget money right but in our world that's not how this works we have to serve meals in order to get that money back so that we can sustain what we have so it's way different so with that being said you know they put this regulation in so you have money in your fund but they say I'm sorry you can only put that money back into the program so whether it's through upgrade of equipment or you know salary or whatever that may be basically it's resupply and it's just sure number two uh government rules course changes in any business a lot of this stuff local has to do with upper level compartments yeah the other thing that I do want to come come in on and compliment on is I really appreciate the November meal that we participated I don't get to the Thanksgiving today well thank you appreciate it thanks though any other questions before I move on okay so achievements um so I'm going to turn it over to Don um one of the this is regarding the grant that he just received by Don Heimer chair Wells uh Vineyard at Brown County for starting my fifth year I've been retrousal for 15 years a while back we applied for a grant through the hungry Foundation the Indiana chapter and we were able to get almost fifteen thousand dollars and it was all spent towards uh uh upgrading and having fun breakfast program which we started we call it because it's breakfast in the classroom which operates in the elementary schools and then in the high school and Junior High it's basically the sit around and go or help yourself kind of situation we're able to get these two ideas that we rolled out in Trent's building and we've increased our meal counts daily at breakfast by maybe almost 100 a day which the kids just didn't I want to come down to the cafeteria it was too far to walk he was out of the way they couldn't see the rest of their friends and they migrated out to the front of the house we got them right when I got off the bus and the front door I remember skyrocketed so it's gone very well so they're really happy with that so we continue to see an increase you know year over year on our numbers uh probably when we started here and I think Siobhan punched the numbers it's about 13 breakfast participation so if you look at where we were when we first start but again before we started versus where he is I mean I I was pretty pretty impressive um especially I think that your community is a different type of community as opposed to other you know school districts and breakfast is usually if you're kind of in that middle in between affluent but not for the high poverty breakfast is usually it's a hard It's A Hard Sell right because a lot of kids are trying to eat it they just skip it all together um and so it was really impressive to see the numbers that Don you know was pushing out and that the kids were really reactive to it so that that's good I mean at the end of the day want food in kids stomachs and let's be honest at the high school level they're either not awake or food AIDS breakfast isn't cool right so you know and those are free lunches right for breakfast free breakfast uh no income apartments that's right we'll charge on that so we rolled that out through the two back-to-back covered years obviously everything was free so we kind of maintained that we went into the last school year and came out at the elementary level uh free for all the kids and we do deliver to those rooms regarded the dog is horrible for the secondary schools for breakfast I got to be accepted so we just turn it all into Universal food breakfast for the whole school district and then we started all the way around so so we're gonna keep it that way so which means it's free for every student regardless you know the bay students reduced and you know obviously pretty uh so they all get to eat so we've seen a good gradual increase and it continues to grow so so we're going to keep it going that way uh that is the key to running that type of program uh is participation is key so the higher the participation that's why it's good to keep it in the classroom because the studies show when it's in the you know for example at the elementary level you're running you know 75 participation because it's there the kids don't take it versus if you make them come down and then obviously as he said you know at the high school level you just have to make it very easily just easy and accessible you don't need to put it in the classroom but you definitely need to just make it there for them so they can just grab it and leave it on the run so right um you know one of the questions that we were always asking is how do you communicate um so we have different platforms we have you know surveys that you know Don's going to plan to roll out for middle school and high school um we try to do that every couple of years um and then as well as Elementary's you know we'll send usually send a survey home just more with the parents to send an email and as the parents go out to the elementary level but at the middle school high school we really like to um hear what they have to say um because you know sometimes it's sometimes it's you know if you're just being silly but then there are other times it's very insightful you learn a lot actually from what the kids are telling you um social media so we have um you know we have different platforms for social media we have an Instagram page we have you know Twitter and uh Facebook and all of that good stuff but I you feel like nutress life that's an app it's a free app that I don't think a lot of parents know as well as support members you can basically look at the menu on your phone um they can see pictures of the food they can look at all the allergens and nutritional info I know from a nurse a nurse that they do enjoy that because they're trying to dose a child that's a diabetic they have all that information [Music] uh and then we have uh nudge which is our platform for associates so it's a way kind of like a it's kind of like a LinkedIn but for the for like the food service Chartwells people and it's not just here in Brown County but Across the Nation and they can kind of post things about what's going on in their kitchen and kind of share best practices so the associates seem to enjoy that as well it actually rolled out right before coven and I gotta tell you like we didn't realize how lucky we were to have the platform because it kept all the associates engaged and they really when they realized like they're not the only one that's you know pushing out wheels and you know working their butts off and you know and then they it kind of helped build them around piano so improve food quality so these are some of the stations um that we've rolled out grilled tomatoes so Deli um extra extras or fruit and vegetable bar that's in both Elementary and the secondary platform create um that's kind of a build your own kind of bowl a lot of comfort like you know Comfort favorites um BB is a deli station so Deli is also another concept of a deli station tomato is our pizza um pizza and specialty pizzas as well as strombolis and calzones different things like that so um just to kind of give you some insight into some of the different concepts that we have so our people so as you can see here on the pictures this is um picture like team shots from each building um one of my favorite I was telling them done was the one up here at the top right um that is the team from the um from the high school uh some of the kids I think did like a big thank you this was our school lunch hero day in May um and so it happens every May and um did you get the kids was it did you ask for the kids to fill out the the banner and stuff I don't set the set the message out yeah everybody responded real well every single everybody loves a good lunch lady so I'm sure do you guys all remember any of your lunch lady from school you do yeah there you go yeah and I think that's you know there's something to be said there you know sometimes we don't know what these kids are going through and just the kind face that feeds them every day and just gotta give them some love right even if it's just with mashed potatoes and gravy a little extra gravy I mean that goes a long way for a kid and I think that's the big thing for our team is to understand that you know that we need to you know we're the people that bring the fun right uh and just bring the bring the love so to speak so I think the kids I think Don and Paula and the girls I think everybody does a wonderful foreign so what's next um so uh you know we're gonna keep working on the culinary service enhancements um so we're we're building our own uh you know working more on trying to incorporate more build your own Concepts at the at the high school level I think the kids seem to like that um breakfast protein options eggs burrito bars so when you can see the breakfast menu um student choice I think that um so student choice is a platform which we thought that kids get to vote on different concepts um and so we can do it as big and Grand for like a whole week or we can do it just for that day kind of like a love it or lose it type of concept uh and we did seem to really like that they get engaged with that um as well as John's going to continue to focus on breakfast I think that's we still we still have a lot that we can still do with the kiddos and then um and exploring just different survey models for each cafeteria for that one of our big platforms that we're rolling out next year in the fall it'll be in October is called Global eats so this is where we have um basically each kid gets to explore a different country so the first four countries will be Mexico China India and um and so the kids kind of you know it's kind of like a passport through that and kids get to learn about different things so we'll be doing some nutritional education on that yes hand I know yes good Chinese food there but there's sesame oil and a lot of Chinese Thai even other traditions and stuff so I presumed you taking that out so we have dietitians and Regional dietitians and Regional chefs that work on these Concepts and to your point allergens you know are rampant throughout all school districts so we make it a point to make sure that all of our recipes are as peanut free you know Trina and all of you know all of that and then if there was something there it would be identified so that students know but we also have to take all of these fun fan favorites kind of you know thinking about Italy and pasta so you know if you're looking at something like sesame oil you know how does that factor into the fats and the calorie makeup and so on and that's kind of the part of our whole concept is still being able to bring these fun Concepts but at a compliant level well on the other day Sesame flour you're just amazed to see what yeah you really don't think just and other and it turns out loud my daughter has a gluten allergy so I'm constantly reading labels and to your point it's fascinating what's in our food yeah no thank you Discovery kitchen so this is another this is our nutrition education platform um so we have a monthly basically we have a yearly calendar every month there's a new different type of Concepts um and so next year uh for the 23-24 school year um Don's made a commitment we're going to bring one of our dietitians down to kind of help support Don and once a month we're going to try to roll out um you know so for example like uh December with spices right so we want to educate so we'll put it on the menu but we'll also kind of do a table to kind of educate kids maybe like in elementary where they can come up and they can see all the different types of spices you know kids don't realize like hey this is what mustard is you know they just think it's French is out of a bottle right maybe like oh it's a spice it's where is it grown and um and so you can look at all these different spices and educate them on that um and so this this is our platform for that so you know the goal is um every month every other month that we're we're running these programs in the elementary as well and then lastly thank you we've appreciated the partnership um obviously this is the on-site team so these are all the kitchen managers in every building and Don and Paula you know I think the world of the team I think they do an amazing job they're they're here for the right reason right which is just it's the future kids and make sure that they the kids enjoy the meals while they're here thank you sure great um oh yeah all right we're gonna move on yeah so I just thought it might be nice to share with you guys a little bit about the sixth grade academy that's coming to the middle school so obviously just finished my first year at the middle school our second year with sixth graders in the building with us and talking with the team it was just a matter of conversation around what can we do better what how can we bring in our fifth graders and make sixth grade a little more productive where what can we do to decrease some stress some anxiety that the students are coming in with and how do we what could we set up so that the sixth graders not the same as and that they do get a different experience and that it is a little it feels a little more um of that Elementary feel to it and not just toss them to the Middle School so we we sat around we started talking about what we wanted this to look like and we said you know we had this when we had the intermediate school and how great that was to kind of help transition to the middle school so we started looking at schedules intermediate and what can we do how can we lay this out for our students coming to us this year in 23-24 . so this would be the class of 2030 this is what we call them now we've met with them right at the end of the school year and made sure that they realized that we hope that they are the class of 2030 as well um that they actually uh exit in 2030 so we're looking at three schools 129 students and making them realize that this is the first time that they're coming together like yes we can have our strong Elementary roots and that's perfectly fine I'm all for being very supportive of your Elementary's but really coming together is one and building those new friendships and building those new opportunities but we gotta we need to provide them the opportunity to do it and we just feel that tossing them into the middle school where they're in a class for 45 minutes and then a passing period in the class for 45 minutes and they don't have an opportunity to really get to know each other um that's on us so we can do better so we this is going to be the team um myself and the students who score is in the office this Hayward special ed will she'll be special ed sixth grade and then the bottom row will be the sixth grade academy team so if you look across there it's a pretty fantastic team for sixth graders that come into super excited for them they got to meet them um when they came and visited the Middle School uh uh the first four were already with us at the middle school last year and they're just transitioning maybe into a new grade Mrs Sawyer is the newest addition to us in the sixth grade academy coming from Van Buren what is this going to look like and this is what we can uh kicked around and how we wanted to just slow school down in allow time to kind of absorb so we have our fourth course we have math science social studies Ela well we have students coming to us that are used to 90 minutes of math that are used to 90 minutes of ela and so we wanted to be able to build a schedule that kind of keeps that intact so the sixth grade will not operate when the city bell schedule they will run a completely separate schedule and the other two grades in the building when they do uh transition from class to class seventh and eighth grade will be in class so they'll be in the hallway by themselves with just their sixth grade academy teachers so uh 90 minutes 90 minutes of ela and then 45 minutes of science and social studies and then we'll go into an elective rotation so instead of having three periods a day so you're rotating so quickly through your rotations they will go one rotation at a time for nine weeks so it'll be a built-in rotation through music computer science Health PE and art and by doing so what that will do we will start our day with a small homeroom time we're kind of calling it our check into next time for our sixth grade just allowing them the opportunity to have a few minutes with their teachers before the day starts just to make sure we're good we don't need anything that we don't need to go talk to somebody and then we'll get our day rolling and we'll go kind of look at a class go through a schedule and then we wanted to be able to end our day the same way we started our day so we will end every day with a home in a little bit longer time this is where we will do things you know this will be our kind of our SRT time so our second step lesson our social emotional Learning lesson we are be able lessons our career connected learning things study halls working on projects working on clubs all passion projects the sixth grade academy the teachers have already started meeting they have another meeting coming up they are taking full ownership of this and what they want to do with the kids and how they're building it to make it special you know they're talking about everything from that first day of school you know they want to go down and get their kids in the gym they don't even want their kids coming up in the hallway they they want to take them to class first and then they will take them out into do their locker so if they don't have to stress about doing the lockers so all of those sayings and what we what we did is we talked to students both during sixth grade and then we talked to fifth graders and you're going to talk to them about what they were most nervous about coming to the middle school and then we started devising the plan like how do we just eliminate all of this so blockers were the biggest inside right there we'll just go to class and we'll do lockers at some point during the day let's go ignore that you don't have to try to get your locker and then get to class because you're going to be tardy you just won't do it okay right so just giving them the flexibility to create this Academy and have fun with it so what will it look like so this is what kind of follow a schedule so CM this stands for Chris Miller so we'll follow his class during the day so all students will start out in that Home Room from 8 20 to 30 that's the traffic time just to make sure everybody's on the right track same page so don't be in science from 8 30 to 9 15 then they will go down uh to pick up their social studies and then they'll go to math at 10 to 11 28 then we at the middle school we eat lunch all together so we eat by grade so they will eat with their friends right maybe folks that they don't have in a class with or whatever so they're getting to that that mix right or trying to build them up for seventh and eighth grade but not doesn't have to all happen on day one and then they will go into their Ela block and then all of them will be an elective at the same time so with their elective they will not go to their elective with their home it's a completely mix Ed population so you know my friend may not be in my English class but they might be in my elective rotation so we're trying is slowing things down and trying to give them that exposure without forcing it all at once and then so after elected they all come back and we will end today 2 15 to 3 o'clock with Homeland again so like I said before the second step time fashion projects and that sort of thing so that's kind of what the schedule will look like um if you're familiar with the middle school what we really wanted to make sure of is that you were not scared or depressed in middle school and this year we were we were set up as Apartments which is typically uh secondary schools are set up um and we start talking and they're like well but I'd really like to be with my grade level person because we share the same students and we can you know if something's happening and I can talk to them in the hallway so we've kind of rearranged everybody um out in front of the office now so like one two three four five six seven that's all and through it's been 8th grade and then seven eight nine it's gonna be uh seventh grade and then the sixth grade academy will be this hallway of 11 12 14 15 16.

so we're looking at still when you do the math it's still 20 20 of our students are meeting the 10 growth in ela and then the same with um math is that correct yes about 20 of grade levels or grade level cohorts okay thank you um and then G you have a crosswalk between how students especially the El population which I know is so excitingly growing here in Lawrence Township with the um a lot like looking at their access scores and how they are um assessed on iLearn and what that's like over a period of time because we know obviously English language acquisition doesn't happen after overnight and so what type of data can you share around that so that's long-term data that we look at for students over uh several years I think one of our our exciting points is that we do see students particularly at our elementary schools with that that same level of high rigor that have students who are exiting the the program as level fives much more quickly than schools where the core instruction is less and so it's not so much about what extra support and extra Services it's truly about core instruction our most concerning data point comes for students that that we would consider long-term Els so they've been long-term Els maybe with us since kindergarten they're now in middle school and so how is it that we get growth in Access and also growth in iLearn and so this is an area of great support for our middle schools right now around language acquisition around language instruction and what that looks like in content areas but middle schools are focused for that right now thank you I appreciate that I have a question related to attendance I know we've talked about it on this day as before I can't recall what our attendance rate was this year I know we're aiming toward 95 so what is our current attendance rate and I know that our board goal State's pre-pandemic levels is that 95 aligned with the pre-pandemic level or is that higher than what we had previously no it aligns with pre-pandemic but we're at 91 right now okay thank you very much yes um I have a few questions um and I did have a little chat with Mr Smith in the hallway before we got here so um if it's too long of an answer you can email us um but um because I'm going to try to get us out of here before but um my question is um reasoning versus computation yes can you give me a quick example yes so um and let's talk middle school again by the time students are in middle school we can't continue to be teaching simple computation those standards are actually ending in the third grade now and so we've got to move our students into reasoning and give them other supports if they need support in computation for example on iLearn most sections students can use a calculator and so let's teach them how to use the calculator for the computation if they don't have memorized all of their facts and let's focus on the reasoning because the reasoning is really where students are going to be able to be successful and I learn story problems story problems problem solving real world problems situational problems or if we are focused on computation let's focus that around and give students some examples of five problems and three of them are are wrong figure out which three are wrong and tell me why and so really flipping it from the teacher showing algorithmically how to solve a problem to students examining their reasoning of three of these are wrong I've got to figure out which ones are wrong and and be able to defend my answer this is why we're going to love our new math curriculum it's all in there okay um rigorous core instruction for all of our kids from sped to you know High ability and Mike my question is how do we balance that with their mental health because if you ask me what I want for the kids in Lawrence Township I want them to be healthy and happy first okay so how do we balance that rigorous curriculum with mental health they don't have to be mutually exclusive and so part of a rigorous curriculum is giving students an opportunity to tell their story giving students an opportunity to talk to each other to collaborate in examining reasoning to work together those are all really positive strategies that support positive mental health and when students are successful academically they feel better and so it can all go together thank you so much for for putting that together for us because I I know that's a concern a lot of parents have when we talk and I just I want to end my comments saying I've been on this um I've been at this dance for about 11 years and um many years went by with no change in achievement no change no change no change and to see all of this positive change really coming to fruition board board is a really big deal it's a big big deal so kudos to our to you your team our building leaders um and our teachers teachers and and absolutely you know the heads of our divisions uh you know for for coming together for the equity work we've done um this is the first time I've seen it really working yeah on a more Universal level so thank you very much absolutely okay there are no more questions about that we're going to talk with Mr miles about our proposed 2024 budget adoption calendar thank you madam president Dr Smith members of the board uh our discussion around the 2024 budget adoption calendar is for information tonight uh before you you see dates that we would propose that we move forward as we are required by Statute to do so many of the dates um there is obviously we have a fixed deadline as to when we have to have our budget submitted to the state so this would keep us in line with that as well as all other timing restraints and constraints that we're required to do so so as information tonight we just present this and we'll bring this back in at the next board meeting for a vote okay we're going to move right on quickly to our board committee chair reports uh Miss Norman what do you have from the foundation thank you Miss Mustin the only update I have is the next upcoming event which is the Bob Bridge Fund Golf Outing Friday September 29th at Pebble Brook Golf Club information is on the msdltf.org website and what is that website for the foundation sorry the Lawrence Township School Foundation website I missed lstf dot lstf I believe no it's it's Ms I only know because I was on there Google it yeah Google has your back okay that's that's a stumper question all right uh Miss Morris do you have anything from the Indiana school boards Association of course none for me at this time thank you so much you know for all of you we tend to get we all get the same emails from that it's a statutorily we have to have a member to give us information but we all get that information Miss Dunn yes I um just want to continue to thank my um co-policy board member or member the two of us um but it is my understanding that Neola is a little bit behind on their July package um and so we are hoping in a few weeks for the two of us to meet um to look over the next latest and greatest legislation from um downtown thank you we'll look forward to it and Miss Puckett what's our what's happening in in Lawrence Parks lots of fun stuff first a successful fourth Fest in Lawrence it was awesome it was even more awesome just to see the positive Collective support for Lauren's like to be bad Bing bad boom thank you for those thank you for those committee reports um oh no August 12th I knew to double check August 12th it wasn't feeling right in my feelers so yes August 12th thank you Miss Beckett thank you so much we were all going to be there wondering where the fire trucks were where all the fun was okay um we will move on to our action items um and first Mr Smith um the approval of permission for the Rubes Madam president members aboard Dr Smith I recommend the board of approval of request permission to bid Lawrence North roofs as presented second uh any discussion board about the Lawrence North roofs all in favor aye aye any opposed Lawrence North gets some new Roofing um and we move on to Miss Norman yes Madam president I move that we treat agenda items 3.2 through 3.6 as consent agenda properly moved and seconded all in favor of treating those items as a consent agenda hi hi any opposed we will treat them as a consent agenda I move approval of the consent agenda I guess we just did that right no oh I'm confused on this honestly yeah all of those okay just as a point of clarification before we move on we have to request that they are a consent agenda and then we have to request that we approve the consent agenda it's 3.2 3.2 yes I think she missed one she missed them yes yeah okay do we need to um through 3.7 um I would I would request um that we have a motion to approve the consent agenda as amended so moved second all in favor aye any any eyes have it okay and um so now I've lost my train of thought you sillies okay all right um you know in the comments we are on to board and administrator comments so um as a scarecrow said let's start on this side well I think you cited and I have been glued to my computer all day just not on the Weather Channel that we have weather coming in so I'm gonna pass and say thank you and wish everybody a great start to the school year and wrap up of Summer I just have two comments first of all I want to commend the amazing work that uh you all have done um in preparation for the summit I had Educators texting me telling me they cannot get over the incredible lineup of Educators that you have um and you're doing it Mr Smith with Fall Creek Valley under construction and so um just is so incredibly impressed with that effort and the fact that you said you have 300 plus Educators so um I'm going to try to sneak by tomorrow we have our enl Retreat today it was today and tomorrow so I'm really bummed out that I'm missing it but kudos to you all um and then also mad gratitude for the presence of Lawrence Township at Black Expo seeing all of the Facebook posts and Lawrence represented is just amazing and so um just want to say those two shout outs so thank you Miss Puckett Miss you're welcome to get them it's papers pencils Clorox wipes all the things you need so I I appreciate all of our Community Partners and I appreciate our staff as they get ready to bring our kids back outstanding Miss Norman enormous standing and I would just add that I was lucky enough to attend this morning and here um Dr Dominique Smith and and what he had to say about building relationships was very powerful and I even have a video of myself telling myself how beautiful I am so so there's that um very exciting you know our summer our Collective summers are kind of coming to a close we're preparing for the opening of schools so just hoping that that everybody has their their rest um with them uh and and can move forward positively into the next school year and hoping all of our kiddos will be ready um Dr Smith with that being said Madam president that day is Thursday August 3rd is the first day of school so for the record Sheila we just remind parents there will be a series of communications that will go out over the next two weeks just reminding everyone about the start of school so that's all I have thank you board our next monthly board Education meeting will be Monday August 14th and it is a work session it will begin at 5 30.

and that educator one actually we have 12 students from 301 that will start this fall as Juniors as uh there may be some seniors in there so I think mostly juniors in that program it's meant to be a two two years program so we have right now dual credit for uh education101 at ECC and then looking for AP Psychology to be second class in that uh college track so looking to get them experience also in the classroom so they will go and spend time in uh Elementary classrooms to getting those hours there I mean as a regional program we also had two students that attended Eastern Illinois University this summer for a minority teacher program they spent three weeks at Eastern Illinois and they earned three college credit hours along with 30 hours of observation work down there uh with elementary students so lots of great opportunities overall for our students um primary Grant sources we have our Perkins a CTE incentive Grant and then our CTE education pathway Grant we also have a new one um it's called we call the stamp Grant and it stands for something long that will come up on another slide that's a scaling manufacturing Grant so Perkins is a Federal grant we get it every year it's based on the number of students enrolled within the school districts combined with a number of like poverty within that District the other two are state grants so the CTE incentive Grant is an annual grant that one we get every year that's based on a number of programs being offered and the number of students that complete one or more of those programs and then the education pathway was a four-year Grant and we are in our second year we're gonna afford this event last year this is our last year of this grant so it was a set time frame so we're working on that one spending that one down nine flies so this is the revenue expenditure report or the slides so our unaudited beginning from balance that I reported earlier the 428 000 177 is where we're going to start um you'll see all the revenues for those four grants and then the expenditures are going to equal those because we try to spend what we get in it doesn't always work perfectly and that's why the adjust bounce will adjust a little bit but based on that the stamp Grant is um it was a one-year Grant a total of thirty four thousand dollars so we received sixty one hundred dollars but we spent um 3 400 so there's where the differences so revenues were only gonna we already have um some of that in our fund balance that was in the revenue part so that's why you see a slight difference in the projected ending balance then we saw an increase in the ctei funds from last year to this year about 170 000 or more this year as the state gave us uh we had a budget line increase from the state of Illinois we expect to see that continue on the next year now that it's in the written into the budget that way so this slide shows you exactly what he was talking about you have fy23 and you have fi 24 comparative so you can see that it was the 100 roughly 60 169 000 increase um and it just kind of flowed through all of the different buckets this slide shows you the actual budget um the kind of the account numbers broken down a little bit more detail um you'll see that you have the guidance the Improvement to instruction your general Administration just go back to the slide before sure so with 303 not sharing any of their CTE at this point partnering with other school districts so that does not impact they can they get that money for their own students even without students coming from area yes okay just clarify thank you yeah this is just the breakdown a little bit more this is kind of my working working budget that shows you all the different breakdowns this line shows you the Perkins grants the Perkins Grant also had an increase about 66 000 this was the Federal grant that we get every year and you can see last year to this year and it's just reallocated throughout the different categories and then this is the detail working budget of it all so you can see where it's being spent a little bit more the salaries and benefits and then the payments to the schools at the bottom the education pathway Grant this was the one that was started as the four-year Grant so there were 91 and now it looks like we got a cut but this is just the last of the grant that we have left to spend so we just keep spending that down every year and then the detail same thing just different all the different buckets that it falls into forty four thousand dollars and then the stamp Grant which stands for scaling transformative Advanced manufacturing pathways this was the third you reached for that one they reached real far for that one I just called the staff Branch but I'm like okay I gotta put that on the slide because I'll never remember that but it has to do with the welding that Terry store was talking about earlier welding Advanced manufacturing classes so working with uh the summer we had uh certain students go out and do internships for that paid for part of that and then we also had students that participated with ECC in a summer camp so trying to increase the the visibility of our manufacturing programs as we have many businesses throughout the region that are are really looking for these skilled employees and that's all I have any questions Hempfield yes Pappas yes both yes a thief yes Nolan yes uh next emotion and second are required to discuss and approve the resolution for check signers second so in the board packet um is a sample resolution because we didn't have the current ones up to date um they're still working on them but we will get them and get them for signatures we have most of them there's just one more account that needs to come through but in order to update check signers there's a governmental Municipal public Bond banking resolution that usually just gets approved by the board and then they'll need two signatures on those forms we are removing Dr Stern Pam israelson Chris test Tony from all of the checking accounts we're updating Dr Morgan was on most of them she was not on a couple so we were adding her to the few that she wasn't changing her title from a deputy superintendent to superintendent and then we're adding Patrick pagorski to replace Chris test Tony for the high school impressed and the checking accounts that testimony was on so any questions no no pepis yes vote Yes a thief yes Hemphill yes Nolan yes motion and second required to discuss and approve the contract for a prom venue for school years 24 and 25.
