on The Price is Right I wanted to run down and yeah that's how much energy I have about this profession I just want to share with you this evening about the incredible new teacher orientation process I was lucky enough to be able to work with Middle School teachers in our training we trained in thinking maps and some observations that I came up with of these new teachers is that they were skilled in their teaching practice they were knowledgeable about the content they taught they were engaged throughout all seven and a half hours of training and they had the utmost level of professionalism I want to say thank you to the leadership for such great hires to our district because it doesn't just stop there so I got to work with the Middle School teachers on Thursday and Friday but I also had a unique opportunity on Tuesday to meet all the new teachers to the district and they were so excited and eager to start this next school year they were attentive throughout our presentation and they showed a lot of energy the reason that I was at this um this luncheon is because I am a proud hea member that hea is Higley Education Association and the association is made up of Cooperative teachers who are student focused and goal oriented and I just want to say that I'm so grateful to work for Higley who gives us respect within the teaching Community to help make decisions and to just show us great leadership so I thank you for your time have a great evening thank you next we have Heather Balch thank you for writing out your last name good evening everyone I would like to take you on a journey visualize for me Christmas morning and an excited 10 year old has just begun to open gifts her favorites included a chalkboard and chalk an extendable pointer a variety of stamps and stickers folders and lots of paper even the carbon copy paper you see this ten-year-old wanted nothing more than to be a teacher for some the childhood dream is to be a doctor a firefighter a police officer but for me it was to be a teacher I would teach my stuffed animals my neighbors even Imaginary Friends I wanted to work to better the lives of children this passion never left it did morph a little bit and I became a speech pathologist for the past 20 plus years I have been working to improve the learning and the lives of my students to Advocate that their voices are heard and give them the skills to be successful never in my 10 year old mind did I think I would have to fight for educators to have a livable wage but in reality that is where we are Arizona underfunds public education in order to improve working conditions salaries and benefits for educators I joined my professional association the Higley Education Association I did this not to spread politics but to encourage the best teachers therapists and para Educators to want to work in public education all for the benefit of the students we serve thank you thank you next we have Roy Morales good evening members of the board today I'm I stand before you to advocate for the establishment and enforcement of a dress code here at Higley School District while me some may view dress codes as restrictive unnecessary and promoting the sexualization of individuals I firmly believe that the that it plays a pivotal role in fostering a positive and productive environment here are three compelling arguments and why we should Implement an enforce the dress code First dress codes promote a sense of professionalism and unity while preventing the sexualization of individuals by defining appropriate clothing we ensure that our students employees and members present themselves in a manner that reflects the values and the standard of this community a uniform dress code can eliminate distractions caused by overly casual or revealing clothing enabling everyone to be focused on learning moreover a cohesive dress code enhances our identity instilling the sense of belonging and pride and being part of this community secondly a dress code can create an environment of respect while discouraging the sexualization of individuals inappropriate clothing choices can lead to uncomfortable situations objectification or even potential harm by implementing a dress code that emphasizes modesty and dignity we Foster an atmosphere where everyone in the Higley School District feels valued additionally it's essential to consider the specific items of clothing that are not suitable for the Higley school district for either sex while individual expression is valued revealing clothing can be disruptive and inappropriate in certain settings midriffs and crop tops including half shirts skin fitting garments and undergarments in particular can distract others and distract from the focus of Education or work tasks and potential leading to less productive and comfortable atmosphere for everyone in conclusion establishing and enforcing a dress code in this district is not about stifling individuality but rather it's about creating an environment conducive to learning productivity and respect while discouraging the sexualization of individuals it unifies our community it Fosters an atmosphere of respect and prepares our members for Success beyond the classrooms and the halls of this District so we need to embrace the power of a concise and clear dress code and together we can create a stronger and thriving hingley Community for all on a side note your decision a few weeks back on a four to one vote to pay a stipend for the h president of the association that removes you from an arms length relationship and that could potentially lead to conclusion and reputational risks I had to point that out thank you very much foreign [Applause] next up we have John Mason I'm trying to remember the name of our last professional development person I think it was Dr treat and sometimes I I think I'm a little crazy and I was saying you know we really need Community input or a committee for Community input for social and emotional learning what should we be doing what shouldn't we be doing you know a lot of us really feel uncomfortable with social and emotional learning because there's some politics involved with it and and and if we go looking and doing some research as I have there is a lot of politics behind that but what was surprising to me is Dr treat was like really really supportive and he's going yeah he's like shaking his head up and down yeah yeah yeah you know let's get the community involved and I was like son of a gun this guy is actually supportive of my ideas and I was really touched by that in a in an event on you know I I believe in the fundamental goodness of all people we must remember that we all want the same things we want what is best for students teachers parents in the community the only difference is that we disagree on how to achieve those goals nevertheless we must run our district like a business if we want to have a strong District in the long term we have lots of competition in the form of charter schools and private schools they are strong competitors because they think like a business they look at costs and they think about what consumers really want parents do not want politics in the district let us not chase away parents with Petty politics in the classroom all teachers make mistakes and that's understandable and we should forgive that and just move forward and accept it they might introduce something without some politics without even knowing it so in the meantime what we should do is we should think of ways to keep politics out of the classroom thank you very much for listening attentively and respectfully have a great one [Applause] okay thank you and next we have Kathleen Richards hi good evening thank you for the opportunity to speak tonight tonight I unfortunately I can't stay for the entirety of the board meeting these conflict with my work schedule but I did notice that one of the things on the agenda is social media as it pertains to both staff and student boundaries one of the other things that I noticed was that in the questions that were presented On The husd Board site following there was a question as to whether or not that would include some language for volunteers as somebody who has volunteered significantly since my children started here in husd in 2016 we started with Kinder prep I have run PTO I have been the secretary for BTO I have faltered with my personal social media though at the time I pointed out that there is absolutely nothing in the husd district that I could find that talks about what needs to happen for volunteers with their personal social media if they have frustrations or concerns which over the years I absolutely have I'm team Higley that doesn't mean that I have never been like hey Higley we can be better there are moments that I have absolutely fought for things that I felt were really important not only for my students but for my kiddos there are moments that I have reached out to my network because I'm from the East Coast I come from a long line of folks who teach or work in administration serve on boards Etc so I'm glad to see that we are having that discussion because I think social media has become something of a weapon that people like to Bandy about and laying out something clear is great I'm hopeful that that will include you guys on the board as well as civil servants here of the Higley Community I think it is important for there to be clear guidelines about how you all are presenting yourselves both in social media regular media Etc representing both the school district public education which you guys have all taken an oath to uphold support and serve which we are also grateful for here in the community as parents and as taxpayers um and uh as you are fleshing out what that will end up looking like um I hope that you are able to lay things out in a really clear and defined way there were some interesting questions that I would encourage other folks who are either here or didn't realize that there are questions out there and the answers that were put out there um to go ahead and look at those on the governing board website they're always insightful to sort of know where the board is at since it's not like we all sit around and have lunch together and chat about these things this is the environment in which we have these conversations and that's a great way to go ahead and take a look at those things so thank you for your consideration thank you okay we're gonna move on to the consent agenda items I move that we approve 5.1 through 5.13 on our consent agenda items second any questions or comments all right all those in favor bye hi hi motion carries four to zero next we have our information items with 6.1 policy gbef staff student boundaries social media and cell phone use uh good evening vice president Anderson members of the board uh tonight we're bringing information item forward uh regarding the adoption of a potential policy for social media and phone guidance for educators so the State Board of Education is tasked by the state legislature by law to come up with guidelines for parameters for educators to follow and then the State Board of Education has a certification and investigative unit for violations of the guidelines and so because we're kind of in the middle between the uh the law that's established and then the policy that's established by the state board we're bringing forward a policy that uh vouchers for the school to follow and adhere to the State Board of Education guidelines vice president Anderson so whether we adopt this policy or not it is state law correct it's state law that the board establishes the guidelines but then its state board protocol that the teachers adhere to the guidelines thank you vice president Anderson I just have a few questions that when I was reviewing this um and I hear Mrs Richards and we also had the question regarding volunteers um there is a statement and that's what I was kind of trying to clarify on that it indicates um employees or vendors anyone kind of representing the district and then in parentheses it puts Educators um but the way it's worded I believe that could include volunteers the parentheses is what kind of clarifies it as just Educators versus volunteers so I agree I think we need to have something that includes our volunteers and I was also wondering if we do any training with our staff on best practices to protect them for instance trying to encourage everyone's human they should all have social media they all have a right to social media for a lot of people there's a lot of transplants that's how they communicate with family and friends and other places but I didn't know if we'd do any training on how to best protect themselves such as their settings to not keep their settings as public and keeping them private setting groups on who can see their posts because I think if they're out and doing whatever they're doing on their personal time and they want to share that they should and I don't think there should be any any repercussions or any fear of any repercussions of that um and we're not saying there is I'm just asking at that point do we kind of train them and give them suggestions on how to protect themselves in that fashion uh board member Reese members of the board uh we do train employees on the best practices from the State Board of Education but as far as like specific nuances for different social media apps not not to my knowledge no okay it's it's always a questionable slippery slope line there and everyone has a right to it but there are things that we can do to kind of protect ourselves and don't think for a hot second especially kind of Come Those middle school and high schools that people aren't trying to search their teachers social media accounts to see anything they can find so it just adds a layer of protection um and then kind of we talked a little bit about it about volunteers and perhaps even we taught it talks about social media but it also talks about the phone and texting um that may be something we can look at because a lot of teachers who run clubs Sports things like that they will set up a group chat and do some texting with their their students and that's how they communicate regarding outside the classroom activities but maybe something looking at some type of parent acknowledgment that the parents acknowledge that the teachers can be texting their student directly and communicating in that fashion with their student directly so that parents can you acknowledge it and if they have a concern by it have that conversation with that coach with that club advisor with someone just I know as a parent um several several years ago as a link crew leader that my daughter would be texting with with the teacher and totally understandable because it's like hey you know don't forget you guys need to be at school at 6 30 or it was totally appropriate kind of took me off guard because I didn't unders I didn't know that that was happening and again totally appropriate but that's not where my mind initially went so I think if we have some type of acknowledgment from our parents that in these instances that a staff member whether it be a teacher or coach may may be texting and if they have any concerns with that that they talk directly to them board member Reese members of the board actually going further than that the preference is there are apps out there support to you is one that we use already we've piloted at Williams Field with the Athletics where the communication occurs between them not through texting and parents have access to it we believe that's a better way for our coaches or Club sponsors to be able to communicate so the parents have access additionally anytime that a coach or a sponsor would push out a calendar or something hey you know practice has to go at 6 30 tonight parents would also be included at it at the same time as Administration has oversight and has access to see those Communications once again we've worked on it at Williams Field we'll be looking at expanding that program so we want it to be consistent the goal is not to have our teachers texting directly with students at all so there are these other opportunities we know that remind is another program that is used out there there are additional ones where we can still continue to have oversight of what is seen and what goes back and forth in the expectation is not to have you're directly texting their students at all thank you vice president Anderson um sorry I can't see past these name plates um do you know what the application is called that Williams Field uses uh supports you okay one that when we went to an athletic director's meeting uh with all the athletic directors in the area they came and presented to us Mesa has helped pilot that and has gone through it so we've leaned on them for some of their expertise on how we can incorporate that to make sure that that's how our communication works and then I'm sorry you said Sports you Sports you thank you vice president Anderson um I appreciate that as a former teacher coach student Club advisor having to give my cell phone number to students and parents obviously is helpful in practice not great it's not like I enjoy the fact that my kids could contact me whenever they felt The Whimsy especially if years later you know you're not I'm not currently a coach but I had students who were like I know your number and it was awful um so the idea that technology has caught up with us in a way I I think the separation of that making that clear to teachers this is an easy thing for you to to accomplish and it protects your personal info is infinitely better so I feel like in in the grand scheme of things removing that option because that was my first question as a former coach and an advisor because it literally happened all the time I I appreciate the existence of these types of abs the question that I would have going forward is maybe we keep a list of it um I just think of parents who have multiple kids at different things or whatever if we could either has like as a school if you're doing clubs keep to the same kind of whatever I'm just thinking of some of our parents or Guardians who might be in a generation in which multiple apps cause stress and overwhelm because part of the reason we've created this communication in the first place is because parents demanded it right parents like the ability to access teachers all the time and there needs to be boundaries and barriers to protect teachers because they are humans who get to have a life beyond the classroom kind of deal but I'm just thinking about complaints and those types of things so the idea of saying like for athletics it's this type of app for clubs it's this type of app and I think that that will not only help make this kind of streamline but help the community members access these apps so you don't have 17 different apps getting information and all of that so things don't get missed yeah see yeah I remember Wade members I agree and I think that's a direction that we're moving forward as there are multiple ones out there I know that some people are very invested and have spent years using some of them and so it's going through the training process when you talk about setting boundaries and things like that between teachers please know that those boundaries are also reinforced when we do our trainings through Vector Solutions there's one specifically about boundaries with students and communication and so that's another way that we help our teachers through the training process vice president Anderson I also want to ensure that whatever app that we're using that it's not tracking student information and sharing it with any type of third-party um that that's a huge issue with a lot of the apps that these kids use um and and we've had education sessions within the district to warn children about Tick Tock and things like that so I want to ensure that that's not going to happen with whatever app that we end up utilizing um and ensure that our kids are going to be safe when using any app and their information isn't getting out there a board member van hope members of the board that's one of the reasons why Sports U was chosen is because we own that data they don't own the data and so then it's not being shared out that was a specific concern of ours as well sorry vice president Anderson I just wanted to make sure that we verbalize this because we had conversation and so we're specifically talking about communication of staff to students so the things that they do on their personal account and those types of things it's not in the same so like for example at elementary school my kids use Class Dojo with their teachers and these would be the kinds of of postings the professional posts these types of things that you send out with class dojo which already to be clear is happening but I just wanted to make sure that we verbalized the distinction because it matters it's not your personal account thank you each of you for the input and for the ideas I want to ask a couple questions regarding Sports uh is it privy to records requests that information that's shared I I can't answer that question I'll have to research and answer that for you in status and is it an opt-in or opt out like is it up to the coach to enter all the information are parents going to need to be proactive and sign up and make sure their students give one of the nice features is that we can do it from our side as a district to put it in so that parent information that's in Synergy can be included okay within it very good that's an easy transition um and remind me I automation spread when I was teaching but employee personal devices so we were told in my school district that when you're texting each other if you're texting about students that your information can be record requested correct from our personal cell phones vice president Anderson yes that is correct if you are utilizing a personal device to communicate information with another teacher that would be could be public records that's why we recommend that you only in this policy you'll see the recommendation is to only use District provided devices to communicate with each other and follow policy as far as what you're communicating about of course okay thank you vice president Anderson um one of the things that um Miss Johnson and I discussed uh was that um this level of professionalism when teachers are using social media um and I know that our teachers go through FERPA training annually to ensure that they're not sharing student information and I I want to ensure that this this in addition to the FERPA training makes it clear that student information cannot be shared shall not be shared will not be tolerated By Any teacher staff volunteer PTO member anybody that is in our schools that has access to student information um because I recently experienced that with my daughter's information being shared on social media um and I would hate for that to happen to any other student within our district so I want to ensure that that is clear across the board board member Van Hook whatever policy this board decides on we will enforce that policy thank you um in the questions that I submitted in addition to updating policy to include uh the language volunteers and also possibly updating the policy for volunteers and adding it to the IJ and DB in addition to the ijoc I don't know if we need to make that decision today or those if we do up those specific policies we need to bring those specific policies for the change I would assume if that was approved I also want to bring up as far as my recommendation to actually put the language into the policy for the reasons that I stated should the link change or terminate our policy would be incomplete to the public staff board students if we were to click on click on the link in the policy and that link was dead then what's the point of the policy at that point and also the language is changed by the state but the link to the documents is still active somehow then we have language that we didn't approve so I would like to if we were to approve this make that recommendation that we take the language from the document and actually place it in our policy vice president Anderson just one more question Miss Johnson um may be a matter of semantics sorry it's the employer in me um part of where I struggle in the language with the state is it calls it best practices best practices to meet your guidelines and that's what we should do in the best interest but it's not a requirement so I kept going back and reading this and I kept talking about best practices and I really I really struggled with that because not like Mrs Ben hook said I know a policy is meant to be a legal thing and to me a best practice is you know you really should do this this is what is in the best interest um and and that's what makes most sense and so that that word of best practice just kept coming back to me and it it really bothered me um and so like I said it may be a matter of semantics since we are looking at it as a policy for us although it uses the words best practices um from an HR standpoint can you help me with that absolutely Boardman Marie said love to answer that question so if you look at pers the procedure the actual procedure we did change one word in there and it says all District employees must adhere to the Arizona State Board of Education best practices so in my mind that says that everything that comes underneath that best practice they must adhere to that it is no longer a best practice basically it is they must adhere to all the guidelines that are set by since we're adopting it as a policy our policy is this even though they mentioned best practice it's our policy it's legally binding and things okay and I feel that with the word must and said instead of encouraged um that was a lot stronger language to utilize I don't know if Mr Walker has anything to add to that members of the board I I don't but that was a concern that I had with the original language is it was very ambiguous so by adding mustard here um that there's it's pretty clear with that language vice president Anderson that was something I was going to mention as well um ensuring that we don't use the word shall and use the word must and um with my extensive experience and legislation that is one thing that drives me crazy when I see the word shall instead of must because it leaves a loophole so I appreciate adding that word in there thank you vice president Anderson so because their answer to you now prompts other things um for me personally one of the things that can I read that because I don't have thanks for always being prepared you know you're so good at that it literally says um Educators responsible for the content of their posting on or any form of Technology through any form of communication immoral and unprofessional content may be subject to disciplinary action by the board I struggle with that if we're saying You must adhere who what is deemed immoral um I I just feel like we should be specific and the idea if I in terms of best practice wish to follow along with what this is I struggle in that one person's moral maybe somebody else's immoral so I I feel if we must adhere to something and the thing we are adhering to is innately vague there are potential problems on either side and I just want to make sure that that all parties are clear on it board member Wade we can add some additional language but I would recommend that the board does not be very um specific in the language we need to make sure that we're not excluding anything that might come along so I think that's why they use words of immoral or unprofessional we find with unprofessional I feel like to to be clear I think it's just the specific word and then moral is the one that I have problems with I feel like unprofessional because we have the professional handbook but we don't have a moral handbook right so like we as teachers have a and a staff have a handbook that says this is what deems professional I.E that gives enough clarification for those things because I agree with you the idea of being super specific also creates situations that may arise that we can't possibly think about that you would still wish to fire that person because what they did was unprofessional but uh sorry to interrupt uh board member Wade members of the board that language actually comes from the State Board of Education and that's where the we're not determining if somebody is immoral they have a certification unit an investigative unit who makes that determination so we as a school district are adhering to the recommendation from the State Board of Education so that's just not higley's specific language that's state board language that's in that policy draft thank you then that's should that be changed because if there's disciplinary action by the board the if the State Board of Education is the one who's reviewing that then that's not ours board memories members of the board uh it's kind of twofold because there can be an initial District policy violation and then that gets turned over to the State Board to have either further action or involvement and um I'm not the best person to elaborate on that so I can turn it over to Miss Johnson if she has well is is that the difference from a district like because if it goes to the State Board of Education then obviously they're looking at certificates and and things like that so that would be beyond what the board would do but if the board's trying to as it states determine any disciplinary action um Miss Wade is saying you know we have some some issues there um but to clarify based on what I saw on the answers this conversation though and what we're talking about is School related excuse me school related social media so if a class has a Facebook page it's not talking personal correct I mean that's what we're talking about is if it's a club or a sport or a class that type of social media is what we're discussing is that correct yes that is correct okay so with that said for me the moral and immoral comes back to that professional um handbook code of conduct for the professional expectations because what would be considered moral and immoral within the professional development or professional um area is going to be very different than what may be considered moral or immoral in a personal fashion so for that clarification I think referring to the professionalism piece I I would even be okay taking immoral out because if there's if there's something that's questionable it's going to be questionable from a professional standpoint that was going to be my question is there anything that would be brought to you as being immoral that would not be covered under the unprofessional behavior but it's not us I can't answer that question because who knows what would be brought forth I fell along what Mr Walker talked about is the state if we have something to report that we believe is unprofessional or immoral we will report it and allow the state to do their due process and investigate that issue as well can I ask because now maybe I'm confused in the process so let's pretend you have a teacher who posts something that is deemed quote unquote immoral who reports that to the state is that our responsibility or can any member of the community report it it is if we are made aware of it it is our responsibility but any member of the community can make a report on any teacher certified employee okay because the reason I'm I'm asking this let's create a hypothetical situation you have a club that exists that allows for all types of persons to be accepted into said Club I.E gay straight Alliance club right GSA it exists which we already know and understand that some members of the community find that club's existence to be quote unquote immoral so my concern is protection for things that are already established and so let's say I as a club sponsor posed for June happy pride month because that's what this club is about the idea that then I could be reported as being unprofessional when that is literally part of that club I have questions or concerns in terms of protection if our policy states specific verbiage that then you can as a state level again go after a person's certificate that is their livelihood when at the end of the day it is a disagreeance on as some people Express politics so my concern would be to ensure that we are promoting not only best practices but best practices for what is already in existence I mean because at the end of the day you have people who are in professional humans exist and at all facets so my concern is that you have individuals who personally disagree with certain subject matter or certain things that exist that are even part of State curriculum standards and as a result get reported for things that again we are talking about people's livelihoods and so I I I have great cause for concern so to go back to Mr Walker because that's the state's boards uh verbiage it has to be included the immoral aspect um board member Wade members of the board we wouldn't change as a school district State Board of educations guidelines I just did a quick search under the State Board of Education guidelines r7-2-1308 they Define all of their unprofessional and immoral um actions so that that's where we're pointing to them and then they're pointing to their own guidelines we would never if we're asked to follow the State Board of Education guidelines we we don't have the authority to change their guidelines um that's you know part of governance will fall underneath what the Arizona State Board asked for but then they Define so if we want to kind of dig into that we can be more specific of what they're defining thank you and we can link to that in this policy or at least highlight so that it it clicks over on that word specifically or we can put it in these sites at the bottom I would assume would that be beneficial to staff and community members as they read through our policy instead of having to search it out is what I'm saying can we provide um board vice president Anderson members of the board I think we can do whatever the board would ask us to do we do have other policies that have the links to specific statutes that we can get definitions um all right that was information item the first one uh so we're going to move on to 6.2 the special education day school report for fiscal year 23 fourth quarter vice president Anderson we have assistant director Kristen Nash here if you guys have questions or if you want to discuss anything vice president Anderson one of the things I I just would like to know is why we have so many different facilities um and I've I've had a meeting with Shauna and and discussed and in you but um so does one facility not provide all the services is that so each facility has different services that they provide I could take a jab at it but it wouldn't be as good so thank you board member Van Hook yes each private day school has different needs that they need for different students so we kind of look at all of the proof private days that Arizona has approved and pick the school that would best suit that student to make them the most successful so it's each a unique need okay thank you and I and I do look forward to like once life slows down to be able to visit these facilities and and see what they um offer all the kiddos thank you any other questions um action item 7.1 uh I move that we approve the overnight and out of state staff travel requests as presented second but then you can you ready to ask it's been second are there any questions or comments vice president Anderson um let me find my paperwork so I was able to um pull up information on this convention I I did ask uh what what type of benefit this convention brings to the district and the response I got is that this convention is globally recognized as the most comprehensive professional development event for language Educators in the U.S this event offers learning opportunities for all language educate education professionals it will provide educational sessions and training that includes the use of Hands-On learning environment that will provide tangible resources and ready to use techniques after further looking into this um I gotta say I was quite appalled by one of the well there's three speakers um all speakers are social justice activists um one of the speakers has a workshop on anti-racist equity-minded and inclusive language teaching practices um how can different groups of minoritized students authentically and effectively participate in language learning and how can Educators contribute to their success anti-black racism and other types of inequities and the World Language classroom will be examined during this Workshop participants are encouraged to bring instructional instruction instructional material lesson plans textbooks and online learning platforms to critically examine how these can be used to Advocate anti-racism perspectives and practices of equity mindness and inclusivity critical to making changes needed to promote success for all minoritized students this is completely against Arizona State Standards they talk about inclusivity but yet these trainings are completely racist they make people of white skin feel like they are the racist and I think it's awful that we're having to spend twenty one hundred dollars of taxpayer dollars to send somebody to an event and and this is the instructional uh instructional coach who then brings back the information and teaches all the other teachers um I it is appalling to me um that these teachings exist to begin with and I think we shouldn't be spending taxpayer dollars to have District staff to go learn things that are completely out of Arizona scan Arizona educational standards and I I have I I don't even know what else to say this this is absolutely appalling to me um and that's all board member Van Hook I'd like to give a little background on the process and and the why that we looked at this conference for Rebecca Rodriguez as you know she's had two years here and worked extensively with our teachers and our kids um this that you set up the conference is globally recognized there are 600 sessions that she can select from so Dr Lindsay and I spent some time with her looking at all of this and she's even gone to the trouble to pull the sessions the descriptions and make sure they are aligned to our standards so I am I I gave you guys a copy of this professional practices and so these are really um the steps all of our teachers and our coaches go through before they go into a training session they're going to make sure oh is this aligned to our state standards and our district instructional Maps is it credible is there value and the resource or the training is it age appropriate have you previewed it or tried to find out as much as you can ahead of time so there are multiple questions here and the ed services team work together to come up with this so Rebecca was actually part of that group so she knows this and this is in Vector now for all of our teachers it's just a good reminder right so on top of all of that I wanted Rebecca and Dr Lindsay to comment as well Rebecca has been looking forward to this and I think she has plans on how she would use the information so Dr Lindsay jump in if you want to Rebecca thank you for having me here tonight I just wanted to bring up first of all that the Arizona World Language standards are actually from actful which is the convention I'm asking to go to so the standards about interpersonal communication about listening reading speaking cultural standards are all taken from actful and that's why it's really important that we go there the one Workshop that I have actually signed up for is is designed for us to be able to use the data that we are gathering from our stamp testing of our students in order to best use and and work with our students to make sure that we are building our proficiency and performance in our classrooms I've also worked with an actual person they sent me a list of the classes I went through and found the ones that will help us build and and Market our DLI program and make sure that we are teaching our our teachers best how to work with our students and build their proficiency we are working on all of the workshops that I have selected are working towards building our middle school program and helping our students there to build their proficiency and be ready for the high school and the Collegiate Reddit courses that we have there so that our students are best prepared board members I would just add that Rebecca has done a phenomenal job building our world language and our DLI programs and it's important for us to continue to send our teachers and our coaches to professional development opportunities so they can learn the latest in terms of research-based strategies data-driven instruction all of the things that we've outlined in our strategic plan and so Rebecca can learn from that bring that back and continue to build capacity with our teachers in addition to the professional practices which she helped develop we know that with our support and oversight that the sessions that she will attend will be consistent with our expectations within our district vice president Anderson I absolutely want you to be able to have that professional development and be able to bring it back but um I just I think it's awful that the the their having to you know they're training people from all across the U.S and did you say worldwide that's pretty scary and this is the reason why parents have lost trust in the education system because this is the stuff that's coming into schools and having and and why parents are pulling their children because this is critical race Theory and this is what parents don't want their children exposed to and I'm not saying that that's those are the sessions that you're going to go to um but the fact that this organization pushes this garbage um on Educators um is really scary um so having to use taxpayer dollars to support an organization like this is what I'm against and not the fact that you guys want to you know learn new things and and be able to bring things like that back to the district not things like this but anything new within your um your job and and I trust that you will make you know decisions to ensure that this isn't the type of training that you're attending um but I I personally like don't like the fact that we're having to give this organization taxpayer dollars for them to push such garbage um is there no other option available in the U.S board member Van Hook um Rebecca has attended ASLA which is a state conference and that is very beneficial too but it's just not on the same level and I feel very confident after reading through the course descriptions that it they are appropriate but I will acknowledge some of them would not work with our standards in our instructional practice but she I I don't know how she looked through 600 of those that she did so the one she selected Dr Lindsay and I reviewed with her and we're comfortable with it and believe she'll come back and continue to make our district the best on the state so vice president Anderson and board member Van Hook um I'm struggling with the fact that it feels to me as if you say one thing and then you follow it up with something else I recognize where you stand as your personal political views on all manner of of topics that we have discussed so far with specific uh education practices the idea that it is important for teachers to understand cultures that they are not a part of especially when we deal with foreign languages in general there are a lot of cultural norms cultural practices that sometimes have difficulty in how our Public Schools function you'll have teachers sometimes who might look at how a student responds to something as disrespect when within their cultural practice it's the exact opposite um making sure that we are aware of the fact that we teach a diverse group of people is important you say that you trust teachers and then you say but we don't trust you to make the decisions on a which training is best for you what things you take back from that training the expectation that anybody that we are going to listen to in the world is going to say things that we 100 percent agree with all the time is unrealistic as a professional I can have somebody say certain things to me and say this works for me and I can go that would never work in my classroom right I taught in Maryland I taught in a specific District in which they were diplomats kids so in the time it took me to walk through my classroom to the bathroom I had seven different languages that I would hear the amount of holidays that we had to take or the number of days in which we weren't allowed to sign homework because the following day was a specific cultural practice all of these things I as an individual who grew up in Mesa Arizona I am pasty Irish I had no concept of these concepts of these cultural practices at all and in order for me to make sure that I'm doing everything that I can to ensure for my students all of these things it's there when it comes to our staff our Educators the things that we do I feel personally like you routinely ask questions giving the assumption that we don't put thought into these type of concerns and we are here seven months now into our time on the board and we routinely ask the same questions have you thought about these things I am here to ask you we need to trust the people in their professional positions to make these decisions if at every single turn a teacher who wants to make a decision to try and better themselves is going to be met with I struggle because this person is involved in this activity or whatever education by Nature involves a lot of these topics that you struggle with that is the nature of this profession I understand and respect your opinion on that and that is why you are here on the board it is also why when our students are in class and our parents look at the homework that they have on canvas and the assignments that are coming in and you have the conversations that you have with your students when you have concern we can bring to it you can opt out of everything that you have concerns with repeatedly the idea that we routinely have to waste an extensive period of time of our resources staff resources the amount of hours you must have taken in order to look up these things to show here's what I need here's how I'm going to use it because we have somebody who doesn't believe that you are a professional who doesn't believe that you know how to look at every single person in your classroom and make the decisions to try to say each one of them matter and I'm doing the best I can I am struggling with we want to save money we want to stop wasting resources when things happen we absolutely address them and I'm not saying that you will never have a situation in which a teacher does something that isn't okay because that's going to happen we have policies in place so we know what to do when that happens but I do not feel that we do any service as a board whose job is to make sure we are best serving our students in this community into at every single turn individuals that are professionals that are qualified to be here that we hired say I don't think you're capable making these decisions and even more so should somebody be there that I politically disagree with I have no faith that you are incapable of saying that's not appropriate for Higley I struggle with we need to show that we have support for some of these things and might there be people that you personally disagree with absolutely but when it comes to the curriculum that they are bringing we have already approved it and it has to adhere to that we have recourse if they don't follow through the number of professional development things that they will have people come speak that are useless happens and then there's a good portion of things where you learn so much about how to be a better instructor to the different types of students that you are dealing with I am trying to understand where the benefit is in saying yes I support you but I need to make sure I understand every single step of your decision-making process because I don't believe that you're capable of hearing information that might not be okay for Higley and then filtering it out yourself and saying that doesn't belong in the classroom we have hired these professionals they meet qualifications and again we have a number of checks and balances in place doing the best we can when dealing with humans but part of that starts with us extending that professional courtesy to do your job the amount of hours it must have taken the amount of resources we had our district exercise just to answer this question I struggle with as a taxpayer as a parent and as a board member because there are other things that are this is the week before back to school we have a ton of stuff that we have to get going and the idea that you say because this person is a social justice person I disagree with that therefore you're incapable of making an educated decision on how this benefits your specific profession in the state and District you teach in I I think it doesn't show that you trust teachers and I am trying to understand where that is and why because to continue on with this and the amount of hours and the amount of resources is there are other things that are going to be important that we need to address that we may miss because we have to put together a piece of paper that says yes I am an educated individual who is a professional who understands how to teach in a classroom and I'm going to take from these trainings what I need to be a better educator and that's it full stop kind of Amanda I'm a mom um vice president Anderson okay thank you let's let's move forward with our meeting okay let's move forward with our meetings so that we can hear from Anna and other board members board member Anderson uh excuse me if we could have excuse me if we could maintain order in the boardroom thank you thank you vice president Anderson board member Amanda Amanda Wade um it never fails that every board meeting you have to mention that I don't support teachers which is completely false um so I would appreciate if that stopped because that is not the case I do support our teachers but if you supported if you supported public education you wouldn't want this type of stuff coming into our school either because what that does is that pushes parents out of our district which means less money comes into our district so don't sit here and accuse me of not supporting our teachers because I do but I need to ensure that this stuff isn't I mean literally this stuff has infiltrated every part of Education which is why we because this is why parents are pulling their children and if we want funding to continue to come to our district then we need to ensure this doesn't come here because parents are have other options in this state and they are taking their funds and taking their kids elsewhere and unless we stop this we cannot make our district more desirable so don't sit here and tell me that you are for public education and be able to accept this type of politics because it meets your political views what my intention is to remove politics completely out of our district and not bring it in here ma'am I'm going to ask again if if we can't can we please remove individuals who have an inability to to just listen that would be great that's fine I appreciate your time here today ma'am ma'am I thank you for your time please drive safe if I keep comment on the matter unless you had I was going to okay um so is my due diligence as a board member and I do my best to look at every item I don't scrutinize everything probably as deep as others but I did look at this one um and I I also had some concerns whenever I I looked at the um the website and I brought it to Mrs Richards I had a meeting we met face to face and I brought our print out um of what they had on their web on their web page and just just to reiterate the language and the Dei resources and the language of those resources deconstruct deconstructing whiteness and white supremacy how to be anti-racist white rage white fragility why is it so hard for white people to talk about racism um I thought my God what and that's just some of it I printed out much more but that those right there I thought what is this about and I wanted to bring it to her attention and the what was conveyed to me was this has not been the narrative in the past for this organization or it didn't seem to be is from what I was told and I would understand that and it wasn't that I wanted to shut it down and say don't have it but I wanted to bring awareness to our admin that we are aware that these topics were were um being pushed I also sat through because I was able to go online and do the online and look at every single sessions synopsis and it says right there on the web page that social justice is excuse me it is uh their position statement it is on their on their web page so I I just wanted to clarify with Miss Richards that this is clearly I know and I stated that I know our district isn't going this way I had the standards printed nowhere in our standards is that to be taught thank you and I also uh um Rebecca correct she came into the room and spoke and uh I don't want to also come across I it's not that I don't trust teachers it's the fact that there is narrative out there that's in our college that is coming to our students that is being pushed upon them or told that this needs to be taught so we have fresh teachers coming in with that mindset and we need to make sure that they understand that that doesn't fall within our District's guidelines and it definitely isn't in our standards to teach that information so it's not a trust thing it's what's coming and then to be upset that the fact that that was a huge focus on the conference that our staff was going to go to we just wanted to bring awareness it's not mistrust I don't think it's mistrust on any of us it's just did you know this was there and that this is being pushed on our teachers so sorry if I could certain I lost my train of thought um I'll come back to it I'm sorry go ahead vice president Anderson I'm sorry if I interrupted you um so as we continue to review the website there are videos that are all listed like that however upon review of the 600 sessions there are I mean you could read the descriptors to them if they want some of them they're excellent sessions so Rebecca's professionalism and ability to select what our teachers and our kids need is important but it's I can go look for a YouTube video and fall down uh-oh where'd that come from so I appreciate the fact that we are being thorough and thoughtful in exploring everything and I appreciate your input and everybody's comments so I don't know and thank you you brought up I was going to point out okay there were there are wonderful sessions teaching to their to the um Health Care to be able to speak the language multiple languages in healthcare incorporating cooking and engagement strategies and how to test phenomenal sessions in there but again you have we have to believe in believe in our admin and believe in our teachers you're not gonna that's you know the standards you are very very capable professional and your goal is to attend those sessions that pertain to our standards to prepare these precious students to leave the school district and have that knowledge to take on their path Beyond thank you vice president Anderson um real quick can we have her sit I feel bad that she's been standing this whole time do you have any more questions for me though I'm good unless you have questions for her I just feel bad um no I was just gonna say I don't think any of us are naive that that this is out there um that it's acceptable in some states it's acceptable in some school districts um it's the direction they want to go um it's the intent um and I just as any good business um you're going to tailor to where money is I guess if you will it doesn't mean it's the right business but that's what businesses do um and nonetheless that these conferences are businesses and there is value there um like Mrs Anderson said we there are things that are not acceptable in our district and the courses the some of the focus of some of these speakers or and even some of the seminars or classes the breakout sessions are not acceptable in our district and I think every single one of us will say this is not acceptable it it doesn't belong here um we understand across the country things like this are happening so not being naive that that's not what it is however I'm also not going to sell ourselves short on getting good professional development in areas that we can uh and I hear what you're saying and I can probably pick apart almost any company and something that they do that I never want to give my money to um so they're there are reasons for anyone I do business with that I would prefer not to give my money to some of our government entities I would prefer not to give my money to um however I would have zero resources I would probably not have any food I would not have a vehicle if I solely try to keep my funds going on something I 100 agree with because I can't tell you of anything 100 agree with including our district there have been times and that's why I chose to run for the board many years ago because I didn't agree with things on our district I still don't 100 agree of everything that goes on in our district and we have those conversations um I would not be okay with this coming into our classes um I do have to trust our professionals they know our district they know our community and they know our professional expectations um and I think that our professionals put that aside as stated previously yes everyone is human um I think Mr Mason even mentioned it that sometimes things come in that they don't even realize could be misconstrued as something and we have mechanisms to address that and I wish we could prevent everything but even by scrutinizing everything will not prevent and unfortunately some things are just a reactionary world and I wish it was preventative but when you're dealing with human behavior and minds and we want everyone we teach our kids to have their own thought process we don't teach our kids what to think we teach our kids how to think so they have their own thought process and make their own choices and you just hope you've given them the proper foundation and the people who are doing this believe just as passionately in what they're doing as we believe is passionately of what we think it's wrong so I do trust our professionals I do trust our district that we're making the right choices and Mrs Anderson said this is not typically been the theme um as it seems of this particular conference and if we didn't have any options of getting good professional development that is going to benefit our students then I would have to say hey we need to look at something else but with 600 sessions of different professional development um then I I do think that it is beneficial and I do trust our professionals to to be able to digest that information and it's not even saying that in some of the classes she might be in that something won't come up but I trust our professionals that that doesn't apply to us they may hear it that doesn't apply to us that's not coming back this is not what we're doing 90 of this is coming I can leave that out so I think that that's where we're at that we if we want to attend anything Nationwide we're going to face this there are going to be organizations that are sponsoring something that are um sponsoring the dinner or sponsor it's there and it's unfortunate um but I know that we want the best for our students and everyone has the same understanding of what that is within our professionals and um and so I I just think that I hear what everyone's saying and I think Mrs Wade we talk about this stuff all the time um and and we have a lot of questions and I and I agree ask questions um but I don't know that we we can't stop and we can't dwell on it and we can't take you know the time because we're going to face this everywhere we go anytime we try and attend a conference especially out of state I mean even some in-state ones they're private organizations they're going to do stuff but there's still value in them like I said I wish I'd if I didn't give money to everything I every organization I don't agree with um yeah it would be very hot outside for me walking down the street so um and I don't think I would have any utilities either but um I I totally understand where you're coming from and I want you to know the the research you've done the information you've pulled and understanding it's only a portion that you've extracted and I get it you you do a lot of research and and everything and that's extracting the negative piece of the conference but we can't forget that there is a positive piece there too and it will benefit our students so um everyone I think in this room in this District um will agree that that is not acceptable and I'm not I'm not my yes vote on it it's not saying here go because and there's social justice area and we want you to learn that um I want you to go in and bring back good practices and and grow our programs because the bilingual piece of our kids just is so beneficial to them and it makes them so much more marketable in the job place so I my yes vote doesn't say yes go support this negative organization but the reality of it is is they're out there they're going to be out there especially anytime we we do something Nationwide and we just trust our our staff that it's appropriate vice president Anderson board member Reese um I will continue to do the research um I I spend hours again this is not a paid position I volunteered to be here and I do spend once we get our agendas on a Friday I do spend my entire weekend I was in Hawaii I spent my entire evening once everybody settled down going through the agenda because I knew once I got back the board meeting was there so I will take the time to do the research and I will scrutinize the agenda because it's our responsibility to do that and I will continue to anytime I see these things on the agenda that I will bring it up and I will discuss it and I will mention it um and so you know some people might not like it and they they might think that it's a waste of time but it's not a waste of my time it's not a waste of community members time to know what's happening in our district they depend on us for that and so I will continue to do that thank you vice president Anderson to be clear I am not saying don't ask your questions again you have a position on this board for a reason what I think is important and what I'm trying to convey is you say things like it exists in our classrooms and I'm telling you it doesn't and these are the things that are important and so when I say that we need to trust our staff to reiterate board member Reese's statements it is to trust our staff to make the decisions on understanding we teach in the district that we teach and what things are based on our curriculum and what things are not asking that they don't go and participate for things because there are aspects that are outside of what some might agree with and then not extending the understanding that you can choose to use some of these things and ignore what doesn't fit for our stuff the idea that social justice is part of that is because it's World languages and that is going to be an aspect of that because in other parts of the world as this is a global one that is literally part of their stuff because they don't have the same as ours so context matters and that is what I am trying to get at with respect to trusting our staff is keeping in mind the context of how and when these things are presented in the context of what our teachers bring back into the classroom vice president Anderson um and again I'd like to clarify I never said that this was in our classrooms I said I don't want it to come to our classrooms everyone truly appreciate it and for the due diligence that all of us do to make sure that our district is run correctly in following our strategic plan for success okay um I believe we're okay we have it has been seconded seconded okay all those in favor aye um all those opposed well I sorry I hold on sorry um I'd like to explain my vote um I will say that I was ready to vote no on this because I I don't want to support this organization but I do trust that you're gonna do what is within our standards um and ensure that um you are getting the professional development that you need in order to help our students um and it won't include any of this nonsense um so with that I'm going to vote Yes all right moving on to 7.2 wave the second read and approve policy now forgive me for pausing on this we had I had that recommendation for there's a recognition for the language with volunteers are we leaving immoral in at this point in time okay we have to okay and then um I recommended that we put the language into the policy do I is that mean it needs to come back through or okay okay so president Anderson will take your input and bring it back um and forgive me I don't know how to make that motion vice president Anderson um I move that we table the 7.2 with the wave of the second read so that it can be updated and come back seconded oh all those in paper I I motion carries four to zero I apologize all right future agenda items anything that we need to add um I would like to add the dress code to the next agenda please I'm not sure if that was the intention um but I would like to see that on the next agenda our next meeting isn't until um the 9th of August when schools already started so if there are major changes to the dress code policy um how does that get how does that go through after school being in a session already a couple weeks we need to update handbook or anything or do we yeah that we're given yeah sorry vice president Anderson we currently have addressed code policy in place that will remain in place if we bring it back and changes are made then we'll have to communicate out in again going off if there were any major changes to the dress code policy leniencies were approved and consequences had already been given the first couple weeks of school to students how was that how's that handled uh board member Anderson vice presidential members of the board the dress code policy that's uh in effect right now has been the same one since 2001 we've had a dress code policy for you know a long period of time it the handbook points to the policy not to the language so if there are any consequences right now we operate under the uh the policy is in effect and if it changes then it changes from that point forward vice president Anderson Mr Walker um can we ensure that the dress code policy is actually being enforced because uh I from my experience um it ha you know it's not fully enforced by by staff um so I just want to ensure that when we do have a policy like that that it is actually enforced board member Van Hook members of the board um that's the expectation is it all policies and procedures are enforced at all times uh if we're made aware that we're not then we'll follow up can you remind me of the process we're approving the policy the regulation which is um that we currently have in place that's much more detailed in regards to the policy so when the policy comes forward then the regulation doesn't need to be approved by the board correct that is something that the district creates from the policy am I understanding that yes vice president Anderson members of the board uh when we bring a policy forward the board approves the policy the regulations not approved but the regulations are brought forward when there are changes to regulations vice president Anderson and then can we whatever it is that you guys are asking for whether any changes not changes can we try and get that as soon as possible so that we have time to kind of review it and formulate any questions and whatever's coming forward to the board for review so that we can all have time to address code's a Hot Topic there's a lot to kind of go in and that way we're not just looking at it for three days um right but it it went back and it's supposed to be coming back so I'm just asking whatever's coming back for because we don't have to approve our current dress code so if there's no change in policy then there's no reason for the policy to come to the board because there's no change so I'm assuming there's going to be some recommendations of changes and that's what I'm asking that we get that we get what's going to be coming for their recommendation sooner than later than our normal available board packet because we need to have time to review it formulate questions and then that way if you if we have questions we can try and get them to them sooner than later so that we're not getting them to them on Monday and the board meetings Wednesday because I know that based on questions that are asked and just like this evening and Miss Wade referenced it is questions May generate more questions and so if we're seeing what these questions are um it may prompt another question and dress code is it's a big topic it's a Hot Topic between staff and community and I mean it's it's not a simple one so I think we want to have time and be able to submit our questions as we can I mean and then that way we can all come prepared because I think it's going to be a conversation so there are changes to what was already brought forward with the changes we already had a policy brought with changes oh you so you're saying if there are beyond that are there any other feature gen items there are questions we want to bring forward all right well I move that we adjourn second that's just the language in there who seconded it I did thank you all those in favor aye aye motion carries four to zero thank you so much everybody have a great evening and welcome back to school rally tomorrow I can't wait to see everybody there

in for a short prayer I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands one nation under God indivisible with liberty and justice for all our lord Jesus thank you thank you for the little bit of rain that we're getting and be great if it just kept going you know we kind of leave that up to you know best and just give you praise for the fact that you extend Mercy to us when we deserve something else instead you show us your grace and your goodness I just ask it somehow through our leadership our decisions all the way down to staff and the students that will exhibit you and the character of your life in the way that we've lived and the decisions that we make these things are asking your precious name amen thank you producer board meetings will be July the 11th the 25th again once again on August the 8th regular time here at the office uh revisions of agenda there's just a small change on one date on HR public recognition I want to recommend for the approval the 200 donation from Bible Study Fellowship class of the Church of Christ at treaty um I think it's an honor of Mrs Liberty and we also have a recommendation to approve 431.62 cents donation from donors to choose individual donors on that is Danielle Whiteman Kyle Sparks Jennifer nestler and Sonic foundation and that's for Mrs Watkins project growing young readers also recommendation to prove 522 donation from donors choose the individual donors on that uh once again Daniel Weidman Neil Beaver Shanti Friedman Jessica Miller Jennifer nessler General Motors and the Sonic foundation and that goes for Mrs Cox's project lineup your learning to approve those donations I'm sorry about um all right we appreciate this School recognition Mike well but um Mrs Boone go ahead and just share a little bit about uh the bridge program anything else that she wants to share at this time so just a little update thank you if you don't mind I'm going to use my notes so that I don't really know too much because I get too excited talking about bridge but this year we have served 618 students from throughout the 22-23 school year and I would say especially coming off of graduation that that was probably our highlight this year having it in the Honeywell Center was wonderful it was just it was especially nice and the staff there was fantastic to work with we actually had 61 students attend graduation several of them came from two and three hours away to be present at that so that was that was really special and we really appreciated the families and the students who made the trip and made the effort to be here um most of you are very aware of bridge and the students that we serve but I think this I would say that this is probably our highlight if you ask all of our staff this would probably be what they would say as well that's the majority of our students have experienced significant challenges and obstacles in their life and many of them probably had no hope of getting to this point of graduation and yet they did so at this point we have we have 126 127 as of when I left the house tonight 127 graduates we have several more still working to get done and just to be able to celebrate that at the Honeywell with see see them face to face and get a celebrate in that and see their excitement and um share that share in that celebration with their families was a real blessing to our family I was there on behalf of the bridge team I also want to extend gratitude with the Honeywell staff having them there to support and manage things and and set things up in between three graduations is just huge and they accommodated all the different needs and they were extremely flexible I'm sure that with their staff and the way that they run things are used to everything being on a time in a timely fashion and with our program there needs to be a little bit of flexibility with our kids traveling and they did so I really appreciated them rolling with it and just being able to remain flexible and to accommodate our needs in that moment um let's see what else I just want to also give a quick thank you to our entire Bridge team we've got one Northfield staff several Southwood High School staff and several whites staff and a couple of teachers at Southwood Elementary who helped and are part of the bridge team and I will tell you that a lot of these students wouldn't have made it if it wasn't for their Relentless Pursuit and constant encouragement and pushing sometimes to get things done so I really appreciate every person that we have we just have a tremendous as you all are well aware we have tremendous staff at MSD and I've been blessed to come say some of the top-notch ones agree to be a part of bridge and they believe in the mission of what we're trying to do and they are just doing a fantastic job with our students um I'll just really quickly highlight our teacher of the year at whites was a bridge teacher Mrs Cara gwith and she came to us about three and a half years ago from Oak Hill and if she was here I would tell her she's not allowed to retire and she's not allowed to leave but she's just amazing the way that she has a heart for our kids and a real passion she works tirelessly to continue to not only improve herself professionally but to seek out ways to better serve our students and then meet their individual needs and I just sincerely appreciate that in her and um this is I have one other thing I'm going to talk about but it's going to shift from bridge so does anybody have any questions or anything before I move one comment I want to make that um obviously we've talked about this a lot but Mrs Boone does an excellent job in leading her staff and um I'm sure she has to motivate sometimes but she has a lot of people that are already motivating and encouraging the students which makes the success of the program but also what you talked about you know there's still some that will graduate of course those some students will continue on but the cohort of students actually can go on this 2023 can go all the way through October one and so that's why she could have more between now and October one that would be part of that cohort along with our other schools because sometimes they don't necessarily finish on time at our traditional or traditional brick and mortar schools but they still have until October 1 to be able to do it to get to on the cohort of the foreign year they also do a five-year cohort also but we we try to make sure that they get done complete in the four years so again just kudos to Mrs Boone and all the things that she does there you know it's it's really cool to see the the flower ceremony you guys were all there we had one that was with the daughter which is certainly fine that was something we needed to do but the flower ceremony is really really neat I took some pictures of those people that were painting those and the hugs and all the different things and that's that's a really neat uh ceremony hopefully you can keep that keep that up so as long as we can have carnations right so that's right that's all you need anybody else any comments or questions I'm just glad you had it at the same time because that was really neat to see those kids are fun you know you say no hooping a dollar dang I want to do it because so I think I'm going to take that part of my seal album it was wasted time but no it was just fun and you you timed it enough that when they did they weren't overlapped at all you know you gave that one kid you know it was fun watching I saw one girl up there she was just shaking before she her name was you mentioned all the different situations with students and and how you know maybe um you know they wanted to do this but you know there would be some different situations but she had one student that just couldn't go through the whole situation of being in front of everybody and but yet they still made it that that's what we really want but um sometimes they just had different situations and maybe have that stage fear that some of us can have too but maybe they've never been in an auditorium that large either so just interested in all the different factors that play into their education and what they want to accomplish and I do appreciate so many of you being there and even bringing their lives along because I know that was a huge thing for you all so I appreciate you sticking around for the last one thank you well I wouldn't agree with what she said I think we were talking about that scheduling that probably made the football stuff yeah we're gonna look at that for next year so that's some things that we may have to do with the counter and actually I have that on my superintendent report too so a little bit more go ahead and talk about your other yes may I speak on behalf of Southwood track or are you going to do that because I noticed you I put it on there but no I would like for you to go ahead and do a high school make sure when I was there so go ahead sure so I I would like to recognize four students from Southwood who made the IAT cccc which is the Indiana athletic track and cross country coaches association made academic Allstate the criteria for that is you have to be nominated by the head coach be Juniors and seniors have to be Varsity athletes of course on the sectional roster minimum GPA of 3.5 and seniors have to have a minimum sat of 1200 and juniors have to have a PSAT store if they don't have an SAT of 1140 but we had four students at Southwood meet that criteria and be nominated by the by the coaches voted on they made an honorable mention our seniors were bringing the only Zeb Herring and Aaliyah sweet and our Junior was Randy Boone so I just want to congratulate those guys for their hard work not only on the athletic field but also in the classroom good I think that's all yeah for our recognitions and spotlights and all those different things behind yeah Tom and just say now you can't retire and move either probably comment on any agenda items if not I'll take motions or proof minutes from prior meetings so a second all in favor say aye all right let's move on to claims questions for Chris to answer if you have someone that um notice the gym floor was in there you had our first installment for that at Southland they hold some in reserve for the final walk-through eventually winkled it you know okay I had one on page 16 or sure Challenger for 45 000 employees yeah that is so we bought a lift station for our mechanic to lift and raise our buses and other vehicles so that it can work underneath them a little bit easier those can be used inside or outside um he's gotten a lot of we tried we did a trial base for about a month I found a lot of use out of them and he's been able to do some things that he has not been able to do with a lot of our buses and the things that he is able to do will add life to those buses especially being able to power wash underneath them and do those types of things and so I think it's a well it's a good investment and I think Jeff I think you saw let's say those in use out there before too yeah so it's uh he's like a kid in a candy store with him generally if you're kind of thing yeah they've been automotives like this he knows a car like a Dodge Challenger or something yeah [Music] okay it's cool does he have enough seating room on the inside to do it to get it out but if he wants to get up higher you've got to go outside now we're going to do a few things to make some adjustments in there with uh um work with our garage door openers yeah just to move them out away that will give them a lot more room to be able to use some but he likes to use them outside too because we just get out the outside it must be fairly portable now yeah they can move they've just done rollers so they're four separate devices yeah and they just roll out and then he dries up on them and they you raise and lower together connected through Bluetooth yeah it's pretty high everyone in favor approving claims just say hi Oh yeah all right payroll nothing new with payroll the only thing that we're still waiting on uh that's not been reflected in some of the past payrolls is just the spring Sports coaching space so those will probably be like the next couple payrolls we have a motion for that exactly everyone's favorite proving payroll say aye all right all right Financial summary anything there uh so since we only have one boarding board meeting this month I finalize some cash flow with our end of the month typically we just do end of the month here balances but I threw in the cash flow uh just because like somebody had one meeting this month you'll see an increase in the education fund and that is primarily due to a grant that we received the last couple years through covid we were able to apply for a stabilization Grant which is focused on preschool last year we received 187 000 I think from the grant uh this year uh we were able to get about four hundred thousand dollars from the Grant and so 350 000 of that is being reflected now or received some of the remainder of that later on but those are one-time monies so it's not a constant Revenue stream those won't be grants that will continue to harm most likely because they were during coverage learning loss type of time so um that's why you see the phone in the education fund that we figured out how much it's going to cost us by the middle and all that well we don't know exactly how much we're going to get yeah either so yeah so we've got a little discussion about that yeah we've got a lot of discussions that would be kind of a year-long process to really figure out what those dollars are going to be as far as what our needs are versus what we receive back uh from the state and so the way it's set up just so that you know is that the Alec the state legislator allocated 160 million dollars and they're gonna they're gonna divide it up by ADM and so however many ABM Statewide divided by That 160 million will tell you how much you'll get per student and so then depending on how much ADM we have at that time was how much textbook money you will receive regardless of how much textbook we need and then and what they were saying is with the ADM it was 151.88 that was a rough estimate per students but and there's some things that are paid out of different accounts sometimes or different places or grants or whatever and so yeah it is going to be a year-long process it will be we will end up having to pay some of those costs ourselves so because of that is it have you heard of any pushback from the School Board Association or anyone well the pushback was early on during the legislative pricing is not going to be enough to cover the cost of the curricular materials that they're talking about and they were looking at going from 160 million to 200 million but they didn't budge on that part of it that certainly would have helped I still think it had been a little bit of a shortfall um probably 220 because you can think about just ours and what I've heard people say but quite a bit actually cool yes did they write into the legislation the fact that you're going to have to use the textbooks approved by the Department of Education so that's still a gray area that could be effective that could be changed yes okay you know short session next year and see what happens then they'll do and study perceptions now or some reception so I haven't heard anything under Human Resources it's a night we have underemployment Kyle Nguyen summer custodian for all the schools I believe 161 beginning August the 7th for their first nine weeks uh retirement Death Clock future South and high school Mark Hewitt teacher at whites high school and transfer we have Tony Baker transferring from the general maintenance team to assistant facility slash maintenance director effective July 1st well I thought we had one that's the that's accomplishment oh I'm sorry that was mine sorry I saw those names on it okay I'm good yeah I put the conference on there just in case you're supposed to talk about it motion's approving improve HR in the opposition Etc we don't want the teachers to retire so if you already vote on it well anyway I can't stop that I know anyway uh Mrs clock at Southwood uh just appreciate her years she hasn't been with us very long but she has decided to retire so we appreciate her time with this um she did an excellent job as a math teacher at Southwood so we have open positions if anybody's interested in the position there and Mark Q we also appreciate Mark uh uh Mr Hewitt um just had some unfortunate situations obviously very important very sad situation with the passing of his wife and um decided to go ahead and retire and we wish him well as as he goes through the new season of life with that too he's been there for several years so I just appreciate both of them and the work that they did at both of those schools foreign yeah I just wanted to mention a couple things and we've talked about a little bit but uh just the graduation success again um I did put a question mark on here as far as graduation changes I did put that out to a lot of different of our people that that were working on that because we had a lot of people involved to try to make that happen a lot of emails a lot of discussions a lot of visits to the Honeywell Center in a Ford Theater because a lot of people want to see how things were going to happen but the one change that we may make is if we do the timing difference as far as with bridge to maybe do that first but we can talk about that later I don't know if you had any feedback either Tanya we'll talk about that later also we may make a change to the calendar that would be one change in the calendar as far as even graduation put the times because it's already listed on the calendar for 23 24 as far as that Sunday in the different times so we may have to make that change but also we may make a slight change in the whites calendar because when Mr mcdivitt was working on that that he wanted to make sure that on an ADM count day which is typically around that it's on a Friday usually the second Friday and there's there's a whole thing in the legislation the old legislation but it's going to be on September 15th on Friday they don't typically attend on Friday but it's good to be in attendance on ADM time so we had it on the counter but legislators then changed it after we already approved the calendars and so now the ADM will be on October 2nd which is a Monday so they're going to be there anyway so they may make a change a little bit with that Friday to me or may not just give you a little information there also we're still waiting on the 1003 flexibility waiver that could also change our calendar just slightly I think it's going to pass or what we put in as far as our application to that but there may be some things that we have to do with inclement weather days right now the legislation says or the law says that we can use three asynchronous days and if we are approved for the professional development days which we have three of those schedules September October and March uh those three we don't have to necessarily have school or any e-learning today because e-learning those days and so that would be our minutes so if the State Board of Education approves that we would have those three days um no e-learning if we have canceled days which typically we do the first three can be asynchronous which we normally do which would be regular e-learning and if they are approved an extension of that we can still do asynchronous for additional days if they approve that if they don't approve that then that's where we have to make a little bit of a change and that would be either doing synchronous learning or adding days to our calendar for makeup days so I hope I confused you because it could use us I know what I'm talking about here but it's very confusing so if you want me to start over and say it again I can but uh anyway that's that and those are just like 22 24 calendar updates that you know we think that we have everything settled and we can just change online we were supposed to know just to say one more thing about that we were supposed to know by May with that they pushed it back to June and they pushed it back again to July and so that's been a little frustrating but a situation training so that's all I have thank you yeah Mr drink curriculum or anything absolutely so just so you know we're in summer school mode and we like to call it summer school on steroids Jeanette leads that and this is High School we worked really hard just with covet and we know all those things coming up and so we've invested a lot of extra dollars to help with that um and uh we're always really excited to do that it's a great deal we have teachers in there with kids for extended summer I'm also going to bring to you now our science curricular resources and this is going to be a recommendation for approval to uh now or you know that's later except to you guys just later on so we'll I can just address that later on it comes up and so um it was fun having the graduations um I thought that was really cool lots of great feedback from people that attended somebody suggested that there were more people than normally would have attention I'm really excited that's a big part of our curriculum to celebrate those things it was a great question I'll come back and talk to you later in a few months you want to say anything about this Mr Craig we're just there now okay thank you under new business this evening we have nine items the first one being the second reading and vote for the bridge handbook for 2023-24 and really my recommendation is you know we talked a little bit about there weren't very many changes to that but I have it all here we can read the whole thing if you want or we can go through it and you can approve it and if you want to do one these one at a time that's fine for me I just asking so I'll try to speed it up but I thought you know all right so we'll take a motion to approve the bridge handbook for the next year so the second one all in favor say aye next one would be the handbook for the elementaries the 2023-24.

so and that says we're paying attention to every child which is then I think all of you should be very pleased about there are formative assessments we show what you what you may know now but but don't note completely and summative assessments that are given for example at the end of a unit so you might give a formative think of that as a pre-test taught and obstructed on the material and then you would take a summative assessment which it shows what you know and what you have learned over time so those are the kinds of Assessments that are given formative and summative assessments are routinely given by teachers in their classrooms in order to see where students are the beauty of those kinds of Assessments is that you can then remediate right away one of the difficulties with the standardized assessment is they generally come back the delay between taking the assessment and having the return is too far apart to enable teachers to go back and immediately correct any kind of misunderstanding or help a child who may have missed a cellular Point somewhere along the road when they develop the park assessments which predated the New Jersey student learning assessments and some people refer to njsla the New Jersey has part light nonetheless they promised districts that they would have the results back from Park in two weeks I was so excited as a former educator I'll get it back I would be able to then go into my classroom with my kids and I would be able to you know remediate and accelerate those kids who already Ed and remediate those kids who may have missed some things and it never happened wants to not anywhere and so that's one of the challenges of the standardized assessments is you get the data back but you don't get it back in live time during the course of a school year you can use that data hopefully for moving students forward and placing them in the subsequent years classrooms depending upon how you do your students but it's not really helpful in terms of immediate which would be much better okay um you also know we have New Jersey achieved teacher evaluation models and now some of their evaluation is tied to sgos student growth objectives or sgps pieces that's something that again is another measurement that's determined by the teacher in collaboration with their principal or their um department chair or supervisor whoever is working with the teachers on that um and so you can then look at student growth percentiles as a whole to see how a whole cohort of kids like all of fourth grade or all the fifth grade um is moving along that continuum so other kinds of performance indicators that we would that are quantifiable in some way but also qualitative um that you might want to look at graduation rates post graduation college enrollment rates and persistence in college we now have that we're now measuring that as well it's one thing to get into school but how long do you stay in school do you have that persistence to continue and move toward graduation looking at your co-curricular participation rates if you're trying to look at your school culture and climate looking at your co-curricular participation rates is one of the ways that you could look at and say you know are we engaging our kids are they here after school are they engaged beyond the classroom which we know um those kids who tend to be involved in co-curricular activities tend to have higher levels of student achievement and it doesn't have to be Athletics you know it can be mock trial it could be the debate Club it can be any drama group it can be any number of things whatever engages kids looking at your HIV rates suspension and expulsions again another way of looking at hardly doing in terms of a climate how are we doing in terms of supporting students mental health and ensuring particularly now that we're returned to Covenant you know that we're not having disciplined issues looking at your students and staff attendance rates if your students and staff attendance rates are in the 90s it probably means your district is a good place to be okay staff want to be there students want to be there and they're there on a regular basis that's the kind that kind of data is very helpful in looking at what is you know how is our staff morale how do we know how what that looks like well what are the ways you can measure that you know I have districts where 40 to 50 percent absentee rate among staff that interferes with the continuity of instructions so no matter how good your program is right and that you have in place the curriculum if students and staff aren't there they can't learn so those are some of the kinds of things looking at community service participation rates some districts have mandatory community service most districts don't have mandatory so looking at that as well is another way of saying how well are we doing with having students understand the importance of giving back to their community of being empathetic giving individuals all kinds of character traits that parents and Educators would love to have um in their students so those are some of the kinds of things that you can look at again your school performance reports aren't loaded with David the number of Faculty to students you can look at the amount of technology or you know mostly now all districts are one-to-one so it's probably less important today than it was pre-covered but that used to be a number that you could look at to see how much technology your District had versus another District and so those are things you can look at the number of students in AP classes for example or IB if you have international Baccalaureate those are other measures to look at you know how are a high achieving students doing the number of students that take AP and IB classes and one of the things I would caution all of you about is that you know data you know numbers don't lie people do okay and one of the things sometimes the boards of Education will do is to say we really want to have our district higher up on some survey that's out there right some national sort of U.S news and World Report New Jersey magazine I was doing District goal setting once in a district and one of their goals that they wanted to achieve was to increase the number of students who took AP test so I started to write the goal for them and I said okay the number of students who achieve a three four or five and I said no Glenn that's not all we want so what do you mean that's not what we want just want to increase the number of students that takes a test and I said that doesn't make any sense to me this is an educator and one of the board members was actually an assistant superintendent and it's now current superintendent um and I said you know that that doesn't tell you anything and the board members said oh yes it does because New Jersey magazine you get higher rankings like base one of the criteria is the number of students who took an AP assessment didn't matter if they got a one or a two it just mattered that they they sat for the assessment which also by the way costs money right um so that is a limiting factor there for kids at least in those days so you have to really look at some of those and see what metrics those organizations are using to make those determinations before you decide that this is you know the end-all to be all and we have to be number one on this where we need to improve on that you have to carefully what metrics what data they're looking at to achieve achieve because sometimes they pick funky data that made no sense you didn't get any college credit if you didn't score a three four or five mostly a four or five it just didn't do anything it didn't say you learned anything now I'm assuming they all learned something but it didn't show that so you have to really be careful about those networks so one of the things you need to think about what matters most in your community because what you measure is what matters right and that's important to know so if you highlight something as being important enough to measure as a district internally I'm not talking about because the school performance reports will be the school performance reports but what matters here right having that discussion is it class size is having reasonable circumstances in some districts that's a huge piece that's really important to look at class sizes across the district we know that students tend to do better in smaller class sizes especially at the early primary levels like Pre-K to third grade right when you're doing those foundational skills that smaller class sizes lead to Greater levels of student achievement so thinking about that School Safety and Security I don't think that that even parents mind talking about it Beyond to say you're going to have to do everything that you possibly can to put into place those measures that will keep your students safe and secure as best we all can these days School quality teacher qualifications okay are all of your teachers teaching in their certificated areas or some of them teaching outside of birth certificated areas sometimes you have to get staff that are you know have emergency certs are they working to become permanently certified in that particular area I understand we have teacher shortages particularly in specific areas bilingual education special education um those are tough higher level mathematics courses physics you know somebody who's tool certified in Mandarin Chinese and physics AP can probably write their own ticket there are a lot of those folks out there I don't know of any in the state but it would be looking at your course offerings do you have enough CTE programs Career and Technical education programs to offer alternate pathways to all of your students so looking at that data how many kids are in that area where perhaps you're offering dual enrollment and offering college credit to kids at the same time they're in high school they're also gaining college credits which long-term economically is a win for parents and students less college debt and hopefully will increase College persistence when they're not worrying about the cost as much again some folks you know look at the percentage of students who have A's and B's um or our honors students and that may be really important again students and computers are you one-to-one are you not one-to-one most districts now satisfaction how do you measure that well you can survey them students would probably fall over if they were surveyed and really asked what is it you like best what do you like least what would make things better looking at your per pupil spending this is a number that's really important to look at again you know different schools within a school district can have different needs dependent upon the demographic composition of students within a school and I know in my district when I sat on the board we were so delighted when we could finally say every one of our 10 elementary schools here's the per pupil amount for each of these kids in all 10 schools aren't we doing a great job and the answer was no we weren't really because there were schools that had greater numbers of economically disadvantaged students greater numbers of students who were English was not their first language you know the PTO where my kids went to school could earn thirty thousand dollars in a gift wrap sale that wasn't necessarily true for every school across the district and so making sure that you are providing Equitable amounts of spending per student in order each child to enable each child's reach his or her potential should really be the Benchmark so looking at it in that way not just we're giving 21.17 per child for Supply that's not going to help okay um parent involvement we know that having Greater Community and public engagement in a school district again leads to higher levels of student achievement parents are involved understand the needs of their children want their children and every parent wants regarding Guardian to their child to succeed but if they're engaged with the district and connected in some way they are more likely to have successful children so how do you Foster that how do you measure that well look at the number of programs that you offer through the PGA ptos do you have ptos ptas or home school associations whichever um within each of your buildings are they well attended are they running activities that support students education Field Days the kinds of things that ptos ptas hsas do all of those things you need to think about in your District what's really the most critical pieces for you to focus on in terms of looking at the data and measure that so that you know because what you're looking to see keep in mind also that some there are some pieces of data that are there's a correlation but not a direct causation so typically if your high school rate graduation rate goes up the dropout rate Journal is decreasing and if the high school graduation rate is decreasing the dropout rate might be increasing doesn't mean they're directly related absolutely but they're of course there's correlation there so what's causing that and then how do we fix it so not looking at any one number in isolation but looking at various types of pieces together is most helpful and again using that data to help inform and improve okay so you know putting it in charts probably so that you can see patterns is most helpful a lot of districts have gone to using data dashboards um with actually red yellow and green as a line to the stop lights that are out there um is a really helpful way and helpful also for your community to be able to look at that data and understand it more clearly because everyone know red needs stop we're doing better but we're not where we need to be and green is we're hit hitting the mark where we want to be in whatever set of data points you're looking at and so that's a very helpful way to do it again looking at that to segregated data in different categories to see who's achieving and who's not and then making sure you're using your resources appropriately um to bring up those kids who aren't you know for a while and No Child Left Behind when they had to make adequate yearly progress one of the things that districts did was to look at kids who were on the cusp they called them cusp kids right and those kids who needed just a little push to get to proficient so instead of worrying about the kids who are not proficient at all those students who were partially proficient and work to push them over the top rather than have you distribute the implicit in those left behind I understand the methodology I understand the logic given the times of doing that but I will tell you that that's not a sound educational utilization of data right because you need to look at those kids who are in greatest need and make sure you're moving not just the kids who are on the cusp but every child along the Continuum it's much harder too if this child is proficient to move them into advanced proficient right but you need to push those kids as well right everyone needs that push to achieve their full potential looking at Trends in data year over year is helpful as well because again new programming and initiative takes time to really come to full fruition and so looking at data just in a single year may not give you a full picture of what's going on in your District so looking at it over time is very helpful again you know one of the things the state did for a very brief period of time was they identified I think it was only done one or two years in the school performance reports which that's what they're called now they used to be called the school report card they identified districts that were comparable to you now that could mean a Bound Brook that you were being compared to a district you know Bergen County the district down in South Jersey that you've never heard of no one was ever able to put it in logic where they came up with those comparable districts because in not Bergen County and you're not Salem County it never made any sense they eliminated that however we all have that notion that somehow we need to compare ourselves to the district next to us the down the road from us and what I would tell you is that every district is unique and you need to focus on what you need to do for your kids and it's not about comparing yourselves to the district next door or one County over um and and fortunately I think the state finally woke up and said well that really didn't make much sense I had board members calling me saying where the heck is Lumberton places they had never heard of lower Alloys Creek they have no idea um and and so it became really just crazy they gave that up Wards okay so here's one way because how data is presented matters um and here's one way to do it again proficient is getting there improved over time you know and then are they doing better or worse for an individual child okay in math this child exceeded the standard did not improve in one instance was doing much better than others but you can color code it for the families so that they can understand it because sometimes it is great to people and they don't know what it is they're reading so I'm thinking about whether you're ready to use data um do you regularly review it to see if you are achieving your District goals um to understand how to disaggregate data and why that's important and I'm sure that a lot of you do know the difference between the different kinds of tests and what they mean you know looking at an aptitude test is not the same thing it's looking at an achievement test looking for Trends and data over time again sometimes it's very difficult or a patient we want kids to grow we need to make sure we understand we're not making widgets right we're educating children education is developmental people come to understandings in different ways over different times I waited 12 years to get mathematics it took more than that to get there it's developed and I had a brother that was an engineer I read the bookstream he helped me with my math he wouldn't have gotten through school education is Developmental and it just takes time okay um your superintendent's willingness to share data with the board okay to happen because you can't know for certain where you are without that hard data okay you should discuss that data together and determine and listen to what the programs and the plans are to address those areas where you've identified there may be gaps using multiple indicators to analyze student I can't tell you how important that is standardized assessments are what one measure there are all kinds of ways of measuring student projects you know the ability some people don't take tests well but if you talk to them and you ask them the same material that's on that assessment they can give you the right answers but they may not take tests well they may be more gifted or early than they are in the written so having multiple measures of performance over time and most teachers make an effort and clearly offer those multi whether it's a project whether it's an oral report whether it's a presentation to the class you know so that there are different ways to measure what students have learned and achieved over time it's a really important piece to keep in mind and you know if those are things that your board is ready to think about then certainly using data is important so how do you what how do you use it will you review the district data um when you do your goal setting you gather that data you ask a lot of questions and see if there's any other kinds of data that would be useful that perhaps you haven't thought to include um before you make that analysis identify the next steps what do we need to do now we've identified a gap where we've identified the strength how do we get more kids to take this particular class because clearly kids are excellent in this area and we ought to offer that more broadly right um and then again it's a whole cycle and it really mirrors the cycle of goal setting right you set your goals you've spent the year working up toward the achievement of those goals you evaluated at the end of that year and say okay what do we need to do differently how can we do this better and use data to help drive those decisions it's really not so complicated um I've included a glossary in your packet of all of the different kinds of tests educator a lot of those terms could be like what and go right over the top of your head um and so it's helpful to have that that's why I've included it it's not meant to be all inclusive but it's just meant to help you think about the different kinds of data that are available to you um so that you know what it is that you are looking at some of the essentials that questions to ask what's the data examine view did it identify students what trends have we identified um what percentage of our students are not meeting those State performance targets like it or not States there's us against us okay and so we have to be cognitive of that and work towards what strategies does the district employee to improve subgroup performance and achievement how will the data be communicated to the community and here's a really important piece what training additional professional development does our staff need in order to be more proficient in instructional programs because the single most important component to recruiting student achievement is the quality of instruction followed secondly by the culture and climate of the school so those two pieces in combination if they're all working together are going to ensure that your students are successful and then you know are there any curriculum adjustments or revisions that we need to make perhaps you know we're approaching this from the wrong perspective perhaps we need to add a different type of course for students so thinking about all of those things as a board member and asking those questions those are all appropriate questions so you know ensuring that you have a vision in place of students should achieve to be able to articulate that what matters to you as a board in a community that your students have to know and be able to do and I know they have to have so many Carnegie units we still have all those credits for graduation but what's really important is how well prepared are they for the next step in their life whatever that looks like whether it's college career the military whatever it is they're going to do you want to make sure that when they go out these doors they are well prepared for this world which continues to change ensure that there's a structure of policies and resources to support Improvement making sure that in your budget you're providing the adequate resources for Staffing materials I was just in a district and their budget's in tough shape my teachers don't have the resources that they really need for their kids and it's really sad making sure that you're holding yourselves accountable for ensuring that you have those goals in places that you've provided enough resources within the budget and I know that there are limitations to every District budget but making sure that those student achievement pieces are funded okay because that is what we're here to do and making sure that you're advocating for all students in your community for kids who are high flyers for kids who are struggling for those kids in the middle who oftentimes get left in the dust because they're good kids they don't make a lot of noise they continue to plot along they are as important as those kids who are at the top or those kids who are struggling um in the tailwind and so making sure you're advocating for all the students in your community incredibly important and that's something that's getting a lot of heat out there but it really is important to provide Equitable access and opportunities for all students because in education Equitable needs an opportunity it doesn't be equal outcomes but it needs equal access to opportunities and that's what's important is that we need to provide that for all students all the time outcomes may not look the same but they had an opportunity and they have grown and learned through that opportunity okay how was your role different than the superintendents you know we like to beat you over the head about this um you develop the goals you said what's important but the how that's the responsibility of your Administration and professional staff action plans are developed by your Administration as to how they're going to move from where you are today to where you've identified you want to be in the next school year um progress making sure that through the course of the Year we're getting updates and talking about the progress that's being made oftentimes words don't ask that question but it's important to know because you can't make a course correction it if you need to if you're not aware of where you are and so having those updates is important we've talked about having policy and resources and again you know at the end of the year reviewing reevaluating and perhaps revising or recalibrating however you would like to think but that's a really important at the end of every school year what worked what didn't work what do we need to do differently how can we do this more effectively how can we be better at the work that we're doing um you hold the superintendent accountable through the superintendent's evaluation you hold yourselves accountable for your performance on the board self-evaluation and we've already held all of our students accountable and our staff staff through evaluations and the students through all kinds of Assessments through the course of the year so you are massively accountable but you want to make sure that you're using data to make sure you are successful in those efforts um again you know having a planning calendar and I included in your packet the annual calendar which I think I've given to you all before but I continue to give to you um just because I think it helps to structure the four year and help you remember what takes place when and we've been through all of these things before but again you know having those updates on progress two to three times a year will help you greatly to know where you are you know so that the end of the year shouldn't be a surprise to anybody and you don't want that to happen either what do you mean we're here how did we get here you mean all year we didn't know we were getting here and that's where we are so again it goes to no surprises for either the parents the community the staff we want to have those reviews about the data and and to help identify those Improvement pieces that you need to have done because they're important to have so thank you I mean this is not meant to be long and complicated data can be really helpful and I know I keep saying this but because we've seen it go down we've got Scenic on where it's gone South a couple of times in multiple places use the data to help inform to improve instruction to make things better it's not meant to be the Amber to penalize people or castigate them right you want that data to help kids learn more and do more questions so let me just start by saying thank you who's a really great important presentation of making some timely as you go through the calendar we're about to set up for the next year [Music] my pleasure it is wonderful to see all of you um if I noticed you before I'm counting on seeing some of you at least in October at Workshop is going to be four days this year again which is very exciting because last year we were back in person for the first time in two years but only for three days and we're back to four days so it will be very worthwhile there are multiple trainings offered in all kinds of areas if you've never been and you have an opportunity to go I would encourage you to do that we think it's the best program that we offer all year long and provides you with opportunities for learning and networking with Educators and other board members from all across the state of teachers so thank you and if you need anything you know how to get me and I'm always around to answer questions any last questions well enjoy the rest of your summer hopefully the sun will shine the rain will stop you're welcome so I'll be there in a second quad s everything just the fact that uh we're very excited about our summer programs we have a lot of great things going on with big adjustments part of the adjustment was submitting so that students who were coming for quote unquote remediation felt that they enjoyed School while still having targeted instruction areas they needed support and we've been very successful at it so far the students have been having teachers have been focused on specific standards from these State assessments and so far it's been really good with the students have enjoyed it we're looking forward to the continuations thank you at this point I'm going to keep checking with hours [Music] good so we are up to completion reports first one was education thank you okay I would rather long at detail report tonight we had a really great presentation that's going on in our summer programs this year they are very different from last year so they have really good PowerPoint presentation for us to show us everything that has changed and how it's working so far so first who what students are there we have those who are struggling academically we have English language Learners we have those with special needs and we also have kids who are interested in acceleration and enrichments um we had a great taste since it's falling seven and eight is taking place at the high school they had one hour of ela one hour event and then at the end of the day they had one hour of stem PE or art which was added this year as Dr Freeman actually just mentioned because we wanted kids to have more of a sense of fun and not punishment while they're there they're also planning an end of the summer barbecue to incentivize attendance and as of our committee meeting attendance was very good so I know as someone who's taught summer school that that can often be a problem getting kids to to attend so so far things have been really good on that front uh they invited for about 45 students per grade which was much higher than it has been in the past week in previous years they've only been fighting about 15 to 20 kids per grade so we're able to include more students we're able to include kids um or little in more into the middle from the from the bottom from the kids who are struggling towards the middle of the pack and uh we got about 30 kids per grade to accept an attendance at the at each grade level those are approximate numbers but again way up from previous years we have a lot more kids attending um they're using i-Ready math is using a program called hand to mind which is a Hands-On um program Ela is doing novel studies and instead they're using something called National inventors Hall of Fame stepkins we also have in addition to the students who are getting all kinds of benefits from this we also have teacher leaders on site and these are people who have administrative certificates or are working towards administrative certificates so that in addition to helping the students we're giving them kind of an opportunity to implement the programs that they're learning and the strategies that they're learning to become leaders going forward so not only are we getting students the experience that they need but also teachers the experience as well okay so that's who's there um by the way if I say anything wrong feel free to Jump Right In okay so in math we are focusing so there was a data presentation which is amazing there's this giant chart and basically they went through every standard and figured out which standards less than 50 of our students are proficient at each grade level and those are the standards that we're focusing on so of the students attended you know are less than 50 proficient we're going to hammer that that standard and see at the end of the summer when we give them a partial retake which ultimately in a second how are we doing like did we did we hit those standards so every standard has lessons pulled from i-Ready they also have mini lessons and like I said at the end of the summer they're going to take each kit will take a partial retake so they're going to take retake all the questions that they got wrong at the beginning to see after five weeks what kind of improvement we will see so hopefully I would say at the end of the summer we'll have that data and I'm sure there'll be a giant chart again it'll be amazing that I'm telling the data that was presented was unbelievable it was so well done so well organized we're doing novel studies we're trying to develop more critical thinking um answer higher level questions or writing skills which if you've ever taught Ela or had a student a child who struggled in La you know those are the areas that most kids do struggle with is those higher level thinking skills and language arts um at the high school level uh as the state kind of mandates we are working on credit recovery for those who have to you know have their credit cover recover Credit in order to graduate in you know all the time so that's more of a statement we don't have a lot of control over what we can do there we also have esy from uh if you don't know what that is that's extended school year going on from grade 2K through 12 labs for special education students who have that in their IEP they get an extra month from school and that's going on at Le Mans okay I know it's a lot it is a lot we also have helped with students who are in high school who took the um was it uh GPA the new the new yeah the new the new graduation test those who didn't pass and need to create a portfolio you may remember that we have people there helping those students put those portfolios together normally that would be done as a class in the fall but we had a lot of kids say let's get it out of the way over the summer so we have some teachers there which is great because not only does it kind of put those students Minds at ease but it also helps us with our course load in the fall reducing maybe a teacher to from having to you know give that class we can use them somewhere else and students are on board again you see that shift in mindset here where students are are in in the summer programs and many of them are volunteering to be there because they see the benefits um we had this one's a little crazy for me even as a math teacher we also have pre-cap one and two acceleration classes which students asked for because they want to get into calculus uh in the fall and they asked to take these glasses and many of them are taking both of them this Summer precap one and two God bless them that's all I can say good for you I mean that is wonderful and it's that is a lot of work to do in the summer but that's what some students wanted to do that this summer so that we are offering it we also have the enrichment camps going on which have stem or Robotics and art and music those are smaller classes we have teacher leaders there as well and the last thing we have going on which will be later in the summer we'll have our freshman orientation later in the summer which we'll be using the challenge day program with which promotes things like social awareness and relationship skills and self-management and decision making and it's really like how to be a student how to be a productive member of the school Community things like that um and it's a really good program so that will be later in the session so that wasn't the first presentation that Mr Ross came in and gave us our second presentation which was on his um CTE workbased against Career Technical and education and work based learning you want to give us an update on how that's going so he has 90 kids voluntarily attending uh on Friday mornings from 8 to 11.

okay but that is an assumption of everything that we're looking at tonight sixth graders are moving into the existing Northfield City so with that we've looked at three different approaches for ways to deal with shark Creek and in each of these approaches we have an option it's not the option it's an option there are always multiple ways to look at it in multiple variations of each way so please don't get too far into the weeds because nobody's probably thought that sorry this is just a big picture view so the three approaches are first renovate and expand Shark Creek as a 3-5 building second demolish Shark Creek and expand Metro North to be a pk5 building or demolish Sharp Creek and expand Northfield Junior Senior High to be the grade 3 through 12 that will that's what we're looking at today in the 3-12 version Metro North remains a pk2 thank you but that said um yeah what we'll do is I'll go over one of the approaches in the graphics and then casting and writing construction will address some high level costs he was tasked with giving you a sort of an order of magnitude reference between all three and it's a reasonably detailed for doing that at this point in the game so that way as we walk through it you have both a notion of how this might work and what if my cause for each of the three agencies look at the first one existing Shark Creek floor plan and over on the right side is a line that begins to define the western edge of Northfield High School that's just a point of reference so as we looked at this we said If You're Gonna explain renovate and expand Shark Creek it makes sense to connect the buildings and try to make some of these spaces give them the ability at least to serve more than just the younger population maybe some pieces can serve the older population as well so you can get more bang for your buck that's where the second page comes from concept here is connect the buildings with the shared spaces primarily the gym which is the big red box in the middle there support spaces for the gym such as storage rooms offices dressing rooms and then off a little connecting hallway down there a couple spare classrooms just because while you're building that might be that this might be the best time if it fits within budget and then finally that purple box on the corner is where we where we located the office or Shark Creek because it's installed 35 building it's still going to need its own office for principals and counselors and the things that go within elementary school and once we get to the site you'll begin to understand why we located it there but within the plan itself it also acts as a kind of a point where you can shut down that quarter or allow kids to pass through if it becomes a control Point toward during school after school allowing kids maybe high school kids come over to Aid in Elementary School classrooms or just gives you a point of control yeah see look at that plan that was the part in the middle as you look into the existing building and begin to think about Renovations it's pretty straightforward renovate the classrooms that's all the green number ones renovate the media center that sort of light blue number three um expand the restrooms that's all the Yellow Boxes you see on that plane so we took existing locations and spread them out so you've got more fixtures more accessibility to those fixtures different types of restrooms that staff actually has similar to go then the area that occupies the office now because that moves out will take that Chunk in the middle of the building renovate it for both support spaces for the media center but also supported spaces for the school at large being work areas for teachers collaboration or pull out spaces for students with for speech or for English language Learners or for RTI or whatever the purchase might be it just gives us an ability right in the middle of the building to do that while we're renovating that space and quite frankly a lot of those small spaces other than modernizing them updating them might not need a lot of renovation that kind of fits some of those things already so um beyond that man we look to the existing gym that pink area number four we're looking to that to become the cafeteria for this building but more than just a cafeteria to still serve as a large group instructional space so maybe there still are bleachers in there that you can pull and say A large group of students in there have a program do the kind of things you want to do with kids in this building and finally then as you get to the North End to expand the kitchen and serving area it would be across the hallway from the cafeteria but there shouldn't be anything else going on and number seven on the north east corner of the building expand the boiler really receiving so all those spaces just work better for the population you've got things flow better the day can be as efficient as possible that's sort of the quick look at the plan if you're still with me I'll jump one more page and we'll talk about how this fits on the properties as soon as you look at that site plan number one is the existing Shark Creek two is the addition that we're talking about in the middle notice it connects to the existing shark creek and a couple spaces there on the left and over to the Northfield high school with one hallway at the right so we've got a flow between the buildings and having control if you notice along the bottom of that there is a gray sort of line that cuts across their thought beam we'd be able to bring the driveway on across from east to west and now it gives you more options for how you step parents or drop off or pick up how you handle that that's the reason that the office came to the front of the building and they said we could sort of line up the front door for the high school the front door for the elementary school and try to get some flow to your traffic in the mornings um along with that adding some pavement for staff to the west side of Shark Creek because we're taking up where the buses park now given more than a pavement at the back of the building too so buses can come around do the pickup and move that's sort of the the Reader's Digest approach to option one do you have any questions on whether you lay down thoughts about it things you can see concerned with or things of life foreign if you want to I can let Dave now get up and talk a little bit about the price and where this thing fits in the grand scheme so okay I understand a copy of what I'm going to present here was given to the group here maybe a week or so ago maybe longer um we were asked to uh by barcode to get involved with them and based in our experience in a recent experience on K-12 Market come up with an order of magnitude estimate together for these three options so we put that together here on the three estimates that you have there when we put the estimates together we not only were looking at construction hard costs but we were also looking at the overall soft costs which include design and Engineering fees legal fees um things the equipment systems that the school may buy outside of construction and what we've seen historically happen on past projects or the ultimate goal of giving you an idea of what your potential bondage you could be depending on what I should choose the two things we do not have included here that you would need to get from your financial advisor would be the bond issuance costs and any capitalized interests that might be involved in in the selling of the box and so forth so it does not include those two things so on option one there's a lot of detail there I'm not going to go into a lot of that unless you have any questions um if you look at line item number forgot my glasses here so I'm going to do the best I can I line them 67 is the hard construction costs of about 27.4 million and you'll see there in in line items 58 59 and 60.

here again I just make a recommendation that you approve that there were very few changes uh probably the biggest change was um just in the discipline part of it that we talked about last time so that means to approve the elementary handbook no second time all in favor say aye all right the last one being the high school Handbook of course there are some changes and I was also make a recommendation that that would be approved and um I was thinking about maybe not putting all this on here but uh I went ahead and did it anyway but there's the ones they have a few more additions but here again it's on approval dates and update the principal Board of Education names updates on high school promotion placement retention graduation requirements and student assessments also to add a language about threats at the bottom of the page on page 29 which is the rubric or the The Matrix and then also remove Tiffany Valley replace with Lewis Cass for the athletic one replace best shooter percentage but top Defender award for girls basketball replace top chain wrestler with the most takedowns so just have a recommend I would recommend that you approve these for next year to move it have a motion a second for approvals everyone favors hey aye aye all right Mr Drake you want to address the size you might have to wait about another five minutes before I flip through the 85 pages so I was I can feel I can feel them again okay go ahead and keep going uh so I brought these to you a couple weeks ago um and we put them on public display Ms Dawson was here with us and she's probably the most interesting Community member we have that come and looks over there and she has a good chemistry well just science background and she's got a good feel for the values of the community and so we appreciate her looking through these we've had teachers and other parents look at them um and there were no concerns raised by anybody uh we have some of those are digital only mostly the digital home leader because the Publishers aren't printing books anymore and so at that at that age level or grade or class so it wasn't even an option and so others we just bought books sometimes the books come with free digital and so uh the ones that have digital will keep for six years that's a typical lifespan of a textbook and in six years we'll come back to this process and start that over again financially sounded has uh has a ripple effect in other areas and so because we've been so financially sound we were able to set aside extra dollars to help cover these costs whereas other districts aren't able to do that and so um our TBR said to margins will go into the devices but we were able to use less dollars to help purchase them and so it kind of gives us the best of both worlds we have some sometimes we have the imprint books for teachers or students for that words and then we have a digital we're diagnosed team and so um you can see there the courses are on the left the grade levels the AP ones we use are we have a high ability Grant we're using those funds to help make those purchases um and all of those are books with digital components to them so I don't know are there any questions that you might have about this your anticipant we're using for six years I would anticipate yeah and so we did it this is the first time we've adopted science actually it's my first time it's been a while since we've adopted so most of our textbooks that the teachers have are much older than six years um so we'll see what the landscape was like with this new state funding formula and classroom fees and how that all plays out and how you buy that and um contrary to what you might have expected going digital should be cheaper however it is not um and they give you lots of bells and whistles but they don't the prices are no cheaper digital than our textbooks and inflation has hit there too and so again it was nice to have the astronauts I really didn't have to hold back too much I should add that some of these come with lab materials and things and so you're able to purchase those from the teachers so they have all that on hand again it's a Time Saver thing our teachers could probably find them in other areas but then they're spending their time looking for that so we use less of dollars to help a little too so all of our science teachers they've all looked in all these that's correct and so the biology teachers looked at the biology books the chemistry teachers the chemistry and some people teach biology and you know they all work and so they look through them the principles met with them and I were three women some community members are looking through them and we'll continue to look through them uh we're we would love to have the input on that you know you don't want to have any blind spots too so um if we find something we'll address it and it always comes down to the person using the material and we're very confident with our teachers and our Administration that if something were to rise we would expect the teacher to fit comfortably within onwards the digital is just a one-time purchase just like a textbook would be there's not a yearly theme we will pay for it all up front so it's a six-year subscription you pay for it oh again to find a way to check so if you only go five I promise efficient that's correct that's correct and so again not knowing what the future holds for funding we're going to stick with the six year cycle for now and see what comes from that and I would expect to buy the Department of Education is probably going to give us books to use next time um they are building that since they're funding the curricular materials now they're going to give us a list next year for some other subjects that I imagine by the time you go back to science build chosen or this mayor of our field not considerably the two things and when we talk about that though too another example and Mr Gray can probably share with that a little bit too so with assessments there's a list of Assessments too and they actually allow for all the assessments to get to choose from so when we think about that we might think of a negative situation but also on the other hand it may be limited but maybe again it might be what we already look at so we just don't know about though but with the assessments that's what they did this year they allowed for they left for a handful yeah but the ones that they chose were ones we were familiar with right yeah yeah maybe not a good comparison but yeah I think so yeah I guess that's it too who would normally do this much earlier in the year but the legislature thought they would give us a list of some her science approved books before this that they didn't miss it so so we're going to order them out hopefully the teachers get them before school starts that may not be the case depending on supply chain all right I'll make a motion improve adoption of the science books a move to approve the adoption of the science books everyone there say aye all right Mr Drake mentioned that sir we have an item number five elementary and secondary school emergency relief fund yes sir six-month requirement review and recommendation to approve no changes to our current re-entry plans and so by law since we receive the elementary and secondary school emergency relief fund Esser for short we are required to do this every six months I believe this is our last time we've done this you've seen us on several agendas the last six months or six months prior by year and year six months and two years ago and so our recommendation is that there'll be no changes and we'll continue on as we get back and we just have to have by law too we will put this on our website again that we did this if there are any comments if there are no comments and approval absolutely sir all in favor say aye opposed and thank you recommendation to approve Metro North Chiller replacement is when addressing yeah sure um so Wednesday we had our bid opening for two items one being the Metro North Elementary teller the base bid was presented as a split Chiller unit um with a trained model alternates one a b and c were a similar type of units that we currently have except 1A was a train tiller unit 1B was a York tiller unit and one C was a Daikin Chiller unit and then alternate two was also to provide the cost of a split Chiller unit from Daikin instead of training I don't really like how they tabulated all of that stuff but it shows you what those base bids are and then subtract those other dollar amounts for those Alternatives there and so after conversations with Steve and um everyone else we decided that we would keep a similar style unit that we have with the train unit and recommend um the alternate 1A bid which would come out to be 194 500.

and you can see those amounts most of those also include a lot of payouts of the spring Sports so that would indicate the reason for the increase in a couple of those so I'd ask that you approved second it's been moved and seconded all those in favor say aye all right as opposed budget passes Financial summary so when Dr kennan's absence just to let you know you can see that we're moving the right direction of course you don't want to do any deficit spending so there are increases there and you can just see the education fund Debt Service and all the different funds that we have always like to remind when we look at these we never want to look at negative numbers but of course we know that our title funds uh Mr Drake does a lot with those with title funds are in the rears so we have to spend the money and then we receive the money back so there's always negative numbers there so I went to see that on financials but that's just common and that would be every school that's the same thing so I don't have anything else there um but you want me to go ahead and go on to the budget review yeah so so for the 2024 budget Dr pun of course laid that out as far as each meeting of what you will look at and so just to look at the rainy day not too much different not too much detail here but we do have a rainy day fund and you can see the different support services and instruction of how that money could be used in a rainy day fashion of course we do have a we do have a resolution or a policy to have this and we follow that if it's needed so you can see how it's used it can be used for various uh situations where stipends Health Insurance Consultant Services marketing Communications or transfer to other funds so again there's nothing to vote on that at the president just to go over that that's the easiest one um I think the reason why Dr Cohen left was because I could handle Marines so it's probably good planning yeah great planning hey lucky you got a phone call afraid to move on to Personality yeah 100 Personnel under resignation we have Bailey Roberts Tech assistant at Southwood Elementary teacher professional at Metro North Sharp Creek Suzanne Bechtel cafeteria manager Southwood Elementary Amanda Rasmussen cook at Southwood Elementary underemployment we have Scott heam Maintenance North Jonathan Wakefield maintenance team north Karen Daniels diagnostician wow wmap yeah practice uh Jessica Fishback secretary bookkeeper of Metro North Nate Weiler teacher of whites High School Hannah Griffith classroom instructor White's High School Christina Houlihan Willett three hour cook at Metro North Elementary and Elizabeth lamb under transfer Trent and don't need this one no read that okay okay that's gonna be for the next time okay thank you yeah I put it on here you can see it was checked off because I had it already prepared and said oh it's for the next topic okay Elizabeth lamb transferring from Southwood High School to Southwest Elementary as lead cook effective August HR also look at that then move the second all those who thinks AI same sign if you passes Heartland career center report uh we actually had a presentation of what was I want to say we renovate Heartland the costs of the priorities and stuff like that I forgot to drink the numbers it's expensive I think they want to happen too for 82 million somewhere in there for HVAC well the roof depths only has to be done that was planned on but HVAC and heating to the electric boats and stuff like that and it's going to be up to these superintendents to see Farm wrestling each other how we're going to pay for that I thought that was the board members the board members are going to go to the board and say figure it out but uh there's something that needs to be done and that's not adding in classrooms like we wanted to do that's you know better two-way or something for that effect so that's coming down the pipe so be prepared we also had an approval of a new project home for next year and it's going to be 2362 square feet and it's just Northeast of Woodrow so they like it being close like that and basically that's it superintendo's report okay I just want to give just an update on our project and some of you here know about these not all of everybody but of course the South Floyd high school gym floor is progressing and you're still finishing behind the bleachers but everything else the main floor is all completed of course when I say completed the woods now but not all the painting and all the graphics and things like that they're working on the Southwood Elementary roof right now I was there early this morning and saw them started early too at they're doing both Norfolk and Southwood the ephus which is the external insulation and finishing systems but right now they are just doing that at um yeah we're only doing that uh Northridge nice Apple yeah I'm upset we started at South but I think they're doing south of first and then Northfield um and then on the North our Metro north parking lot uh taking out the island that should I didn't go tonight but that island has probably gone at this point and then you saw on the graphic as far as with the plans uh at Metro North that was already put in there but that's going to be all paved there'll actually be 10 feet towards the South um that will be added on to that too so that will help a lot with the efficiencies of snow removal mowing of the the problem with the uh that being flooded and with the ice and all the different things that happen it's it's nice to get a large a lot of things that made it a little bit more difficult because of that so they will have that completed before school starts and of course they'll get going on pretty quickly and they have already and as you heard the Metro North Chiller um that is just a situation of supply and demand not supply and demand but the just being able to have the chiller and say they said about 10 months we'll have that and they'll start working on that also we're going to be doing some enhanced safety projects at our schools locker rooms are still in the design phase that's getting closer to being able to continue to do mids and things like that and of course you already know about the tennis courts I really wanted to have that done this year but because of a lot of delays and different constructions and those vendors that won't wait till next summer so I want to make sure that I just gave you a little update on that also I didn't know that Mr Nelson was going to be here tonight but I had this just to share the great article of Embassy of Walbridge County students have more academic options of course we're very pleased to be able to have that partnership with IU Kokomo Mr Drake did a great job of working with them finalizing that so our students at both Northfield and Southwood would have more options they've already had a lot of options with the Dual credit and with ap but this just enhances I guess I'm gonna use that board again today enhances the ability for those students to have to be able to take advantage of that so and I don't know I didn't tell you that I was talking about that but I know if you want to share anything else I think Mr Drake has his quote in here in the middle too along with mine and so appreciate the paper reaching out and being able to that's something we already had but now it helps formalize it and it does unlock some more access to full classes for our students so um it's a it's a good so I think I did mention all the projects and um so we will continue to work on those and like we said in the last meeting during the work session summer is pretty short so it's really hard to get a lot of those things done but they are getting things completed and we're happy for that um uh at the last meeting we voted on some science curriculum and I had some teachers speak up that weren't at the final meeting and they asked about some notes and so the committee kind of had a come together beginning again and so we're going to adjust uh one of the textbooks that we're offering we're going to still use the same video we approved before but we're adding a new one we use this vendor Sabbath says Pearson I don't know if you guys remember that from school but they're very well respected so we're going to follow this instead we're not going to rush through that and so we'll make that available for anybody in the public that wants to come see it opportunity this is teacher selected principal approved so I'll bring this to you again in two weeks after we've had a little chance for the public come in the book It's All Digital so if somebody wants to reach out to me and they can email me a call information so they will vote on that down the 25th so I'd ask you to vote on that to approve that amend it to our science curriculum that we've already approved we've seen it once new business recommendation to approve no changes for the 2324 School Meal of prices and just a reminder too that breakfast will still be it will be free next year so the universal free for breakfast but there are no no changes to the school for crisis but we need to approve them there's no make a motion for that I'll move secondly removed and seconded all those in favor say aye aye is opposed because it passes there is no unfinished business we have the poor policy first reading for revisions of policy 6160 Capital asset and policy 3230 teacher appreciation agreement so this the 6160 Capital asset we work with a vendor and his name is Mr Wells and he does a lot with our Capital assets that we have to um of inventory of and so our old policy was probably about 50 60 70 words this is several pages long that is the recommendation through our legal not our local legal but through different uh Avenues and so I know it's very very long this is just the first reading we'll bring it back to you next time if you have any questions between now and then on the 25th and let us know I'll have Dr King get with you to answer any and all questions we just made our policy book a lot so it makes it better oh yeah it's a lot better so um again if you have questions and then I'll move on so buy Indiana code also every year interesting I don't know why they do that I should probably ask our legal counsel but every year we have to do our annual review of our policy for the teacher appreciation Grant in the yellow they gave they gave us guidance when I say hey it's NES school boards Association gives us guidance and so most of it's just like we've had before I only added the yellow sections the highlighted sections because that was in the guidance just to say what we were going to do we're not going to do and so you can see in there the MC Waters County School Board will not provide an amount not exceeding 50 of the amount of a statement to an individual teacher a particular State fiscal year becomes a permanent part of it or it increases the base salary of a teacher receiving the stipend for school years beginning after the state fiscal hearing which the statements received in addition to base salary is not studied to collect bargaining but as discussable basically what that means is we're going to give them a stipend but that stipend won't be a part of their actual salary just be a statement that's what we've done every year the other one is type into an individual teacher in a particular year is not subject to a collective bargaining but discussable and as an addition to the minimum salary or increases in the salary set under Indiana code 20-28-9-5 so again the same thing and then Embassy kind of tag policy will not differentiate between school buildings you are allowed to differentiate between school buildings but we have not done that and will not do that within this year so this is also shared with our teacher Association and it's not really anything different that we've done before but we will call this the first reading again because there are a couple changes so I'll bring it back for a vote on the 25th but there are questions you can let me know just remember or not remember but just as a as a note too again teachers there's four different categories in there evaluations and those are highly effective is the highest and effective is the second highest those two are the only ones that you can get on those stipends and there has to be a differential between highly effective and effective 25 percent which does not necessarily account for a lot of funding because there's not a lot necessary but it is nice to have that and it's still part of the state Merchant all right thank you public comment overall items are you know items from board members [Music] um

for eight weeks the college career Readiness now broke where they help kids with everything hope spread that could be filling out your college applications that could be filling out your military applications that could be filling out things for scholarships for financial aid they're going to get these kids ready and again these are kids who are volunteering because they see the value we've had so much this is not just about our thing but in education we just there's just so much money out there that kids don't even know exists for scholarships and we're not helping kids find that money and along the lines this past year we weren't really sure with the coven years how it was going to go we actually had our American scholarships received by our students this year increased by over two million dollars from the previous year and then of course that's a lot of our students but it's also a lot of our staff helping them find that money um we also had or are seen over the course of the last four years a giant increase in the number of students attending a four-year college so I put the numbers in the notes on board docs but in 2020 of course uh coveted only 20 of our students went to a four-year University there's a very large number going to community college and staying home as one would expect that year then it jumped to 30 the next year 36 with the class of 22 and this year we went from 36 to 46 and we're seeing a lot of really prestigious universities there as well we also have 15 ESL students who are going to attend rbcc for free this year coming up um so we have a lot going on there what's the next one let's see oh and then we have 20 students who are attending a six-speed program who are not only learning things like EKG and CPR and becoming certified nurse assistant but they're getting paid twelve hundred dollars to take the class so mainly for them and the last thing I have in my notes for education was that he uh Mr Ross wanted to give us a quick update on our dual credit we had seven different something 19 courses in seven and seven different subjects I don't know if you all were here for this or remember it but we're a partnered with Stockton this year as well and not only do we have those students taking that classes but we also now have teachers earning master's degrees from soccer um I believe he said they were free in their content area so we have a lot going on so that was what's going on in the summer and going forward um it was and I'm not even giving you everything I was taking notes as fast as I could it was amazing I mean the things that they are doing this summer I know nothing that summer programs before now every district has several programs but it was really incredible it was one of the best presentations I've ever seen nurse it was it was it made me very optimistic foreign [Music] year there wasn't one students who earned about a million dollars for yourself who's going to NYU for free for free was able to find that I believe the executive was 999 000 in financially in scholarship unfortunately she could only use but but she's included in that number any questions um can you hear me okay the question I have is with the portfolio program how many students are we talking about [Music] I just I was just curious yeah yeah and great presentation this thank you it was nothing I'm sure increasing volume of opportunities uh really is the idea that many of the techniques and tools that the teachers are using are really the sandbox for things that couldn't introduced so this is an opportunity to get some of the staff Hands-On with some of these different techniques and have them serve as Leaders throughout the teaching communities any other questions from Mike education but still at least I'll give you a break I think uh governance is much shorter I think it happens pretty goodly so the first thing that is on tonight's agenda is the first three to hopefully you were able to read it is that our new UC facilities agreement has been updated and it's there for you to read I would encourage you all to read it before we formally adoptedly the audience but everything is in there it is comprehensive it talks about our interior system where we are doing different entities based on their involvement interview so so tier one would be District sponsored activities and then tier two would be considered Associates without schools like booster clubs and all the way down so it's here which is for-profit outside organization so we work our way through uh for priority and for free and there is there's a matrix in there that you can see those fees uh it includes things like security damage custodial fees Insurance everything is in there it is it was in a previous weekend report but it's also on tonight's agendas you can see there unfortunately we could not find any record of how much revenue we had produced uh rented out our facilities in the past that we don't have a way to anticipate how much revenue this one will generate so after a good amount I would say a year we will revisit that and see if this is something that's going to generate Revenue but it's just something that's itself how we can use it in that way finding so we're not sure about that again okay the Titanic email everybody but I want to double check just in case you you are able to complete the board's self-evaluation now I did it before I emailed you guys to see how it would take important about 45 minutes it's very much like the superintendent evaluation so you know the format it's right on the njsba website at the bottom on the right hand side click through a few things use the same username and the password that you guys yes so that we can use the results that are names so the first Monday of August so that we could be governance just to make sure um [Music] we also have to plan and schedule our summer retreats which is where we will create goals for the coming school year we'll also discuss that this year it's a new Five-Year Plan just if we want to follow the same uh format that we used last year last year we used our I guess it was calling us more needing staying after the board meeting for night one and then came back the following night this even though it would be August 16th at 7 .

we do have uh design contingency included construction contingency included and we've also allowed for potential cost escalation that may happen between now and within the next year when the documents would potentially be done and the project would go to market for bidding so we tried to account for that as best we can based on what's currently happening in the market um below that you'll see the the cost uh preliminary numbers for design fees and reimbursables and then in the blue section you'll see we've applied a 20 factor for other owner soft cost items of which the examples I gave me before typically we would see that number in the 20 to 30 percent range but since this is uh in all three options it's kind of an existing school so we're not necessarily starting from scratch so we're budgeting on the lower end of that 20 to 30 percent we've got a 20 factor in here for the potential soft costs um and when you add all that together this option one again without capitalized interest or Bond issuance costs comes out to roughly 34.6 million dollars so that's kind of a general overview of a number for that option is there anything questions regarding the details it says new metal roof but is it wow it's the slope of the existing roof we would be taking the existing I believe asphalt shield look off and we'd be putting on metal steam seat before total slope apart they're still so flat there's flat on the top so on the very top yeah inside the dancer that's replaced with new uh EPM or TPO Rubber and we would if we need to provide additional slope to whatever roof drainage is in that um called mechanical or rooftop unit well there we're all rooftop equipment it's hiding behind all the mansards that go around the perimeter of the building any other questions from anybody all right that was option one so in no particular order hey approach number two renovate and expand maternal one to be a pre-k-3-5 building and then demolish Shark Creek so the exist existing Metro North building is the first page just like the last time now I will tell you before I leave this we've kind of looked in knowing how the building has worked for you talking with the administrators that have been in that building over the years there are three spaces that aren't necessarily working as well as you'd like them to basically the kitchen is incredibly tight what was the dressing rooms are just used for storage now and the office is in the wrong spot to be able to provide a secure control entrance so frankly the approach we took actually demolishes the existing kitchen and the existing office area it will leave the Boiler Room the cafeteria and the existing dressing rooms although they'll get repurposed for the entire Edition show so just kind of going in as you look at this plan and that's the way we're approaching this everything else stays so when we begin looking at this from a point of view of you have three classroom pods and currently your population is running right about a three sections per grade so three rooms per grade level so rather than just put a big addition somewhere on the end and add in a bunch of classrooms it sort of made sense to try and work with each of the three pods and get each of them up to six frames so the thought is if you look at the the Pod that comes south on the front of the building you're looking at the Gable land as you go by on the road we're going to run a new cable perpendicular into it that will tie into where the hallway drops out to the West so we can add two classrooms into the existing floor that are there and now you can unless you've got some Bubble Glass with four grapes and that's always a possibility but you can put two grades you can do it all three pods and you can now get two grades on each wing of the building or in each part of the building now that's three more classrooms than you need I've never done the principal who can't fill up the classroom or something um in today's world it tends to be some kind of pull out for special needs remedial care or remedial education something but there are three spaces now that are available for that or for that bubble class that you've got fourth grade or four classrooms a fourth grade so that gives the administration some options with those we now take the four rooms in the middle they can be used purely for kindergarten not all of them have restaurants I think one of them comes out shy on westerns the other three I'll do within the room so they work pretty nice for that and then where the office was we want to look at keying a hallway out to the north and adding rooms for Pre-K so these are the little ones and literally we would have an ability when we get to the site plan they can have their own entrance off the back side of the property and we'll get to get the stuff for us by separating them out getting them on their own makes the mamas feel better but their little ones aren't getting rolled in with the fifth graders as we move west through the building now we kept the boiler room where it is it's adequate in size and besides hopefully within about 10 months the new children drops in the backside of it so we don't want to mess any of that up to the west of that add a new gym and let me say in the last example this example oh gems are right around 12 13 000 square feet so they've got a full-size court with some seating like 500 600 seats of seating or you push the bleachers back in and you can get two cross courts so that's kind of the approach we took on all of these give you a real Jam in each of the solutions um that green space out on the end that's your support spaces the storage dressing rooms go with it the other side of the hallway we kept the cafeteria build a new kitchen to the west side of it so out into the parking lot a new kitchen before we tear down the old one so again we have to think about with Metro North how you renovate this space while you occupy it and then the area that is the two bathrooms and the fuel dressing area we'd extend that forward because we can do we can play with some of the roof lines as we come forward put a new Gable entrance on the front and give you an option you could literally enter from the south or anywhere along the East wall so that we can create a secure entrance where at some point wherever it makes sense to bring people into the space check them into the building and then release them into the building itself you can manage that so I really think there's probably one more square footage there than you need for an office but for the purposes of today's it's sort of this is how it might look for how we might go about it think in a nutshell I think it's the most of the plans let me jump to the site that's on mainly and on the site he took the approach of the Loop Road whether it follows the path that I'm showing starting piece of the tree line coming around the back with literally a small parking lot in the back because preschool parents that literally pull in and lock their car take their student inside or Park their car and pick them up at the end of the day they don't just stand in line with one to come out and then coming on to the West we can either tie back into the existing lot on the west side or if it potentially go straight through the county road to the West so it gives you some options on how traffic flows here and then the final piece of this is in filling the grass area up front between them the sort of Loop Drive and the straight through shot on parking just that space is there it's it is kind of attractive and it looks nice but it also seems to create parking and traffic issues for you every time you have something going on in school so that's how we looked at this site any questions on this plan or this approach I notice you have a lot for future expansion so you just add on that would be the thought sure each time you add on to this building out here starting to get to a point where you have to begin safe you Jim big enough and it usually doesn't have anything to do with the physical size it's going to get rid of the kids through there in a scheduled day so like you know right now like when they have activities or programs or stuff like a shark Creek or Metro they usually have do two different programs or they usually have to do you know or here lately go to Northfield but that's still is the name of space oh Auditorium so is that gym because obviously it's like you probably would have seating on both sides is there a way to make that those gems big enough to support when you're having all that or gotta be careful how I answer this I don't want to sound Flip but I've never been able to make one of them okay I just the crowds that come for some of these things and half a dozen a year when you look at the Cotton once per grade isn't it when we look at the cost of the space that you need to get all those people in for one event and you're not going to use that for any really edible purpose unless this is a field house attention to the high school and Paving you need to park all those people that especially in elementary school will never get used except those half dozen times it just most folks get to a point where they go and then we can't just I just it was just no it's a very good question it's just a very difficult thing to answer it's talking about seeing and like what's going Scott's question he said that the bleachers maybe would set like five six hundred people in there um what what my Craftsman showed when he put this together was maybe five or six rows on each side but we tend to end up doing is pushing that main floor to one side and stacking everybody on the one side so that when you have a program with the kids they're all Seated on the one side and likewise because you enter this gym from the hallway on the south we really don't want parents walking along the Baseline in the middle of the game get to their seat especially grandma or Walker so we tend to pull those all to one side and so we can get more in the range of seven to eight to nine rows of seats and then over the length of a court that takes the ransom over between 500.

questions on that it's nice to see it come under yes yeah the estimate was 276 000. which was the estimate kind of based off of the display unit we approve the purchase of the children for the much more using this but right all in favor approval say aye recommendation approved Northfield High School Stafford High School yeah so e-fest for those of you that don't know I looked up the definition the exterior insulation so basically it's the synthetic stucco kind of type material that's on the outside of our buildings the base bid now we did a lot of different bits because we weren't sure how to break this up so the base bid number one covers all of the south and east facing Rufus okay alternate one covers the west and North Facing East and Alternate two covers the courtyard which is the outside but inside of the building and so that was done for both Northfield and Southwood we had two bidders and so um you can see what those base bids and Alternate work and Talon was a total if you did all of the alternates and base bid at 272 thousand nine dollars where Atlas was at 428 195 recorders to do it all we had a budget for 288 thousand dollars uh as far as an estimate on some of that uh project so by going with Talon we would be able to do all we dealt with them before have we dealt with Talent no we haven't really ever done it but according to Barton Co Talon and Atlas are the same company one has more overhead than the other so Choose Wisely because the one person that came at the pre-bid there you go yeah foreign [Music] tracks I moved itself again it wasn't right yeah he came to the bid meeting the pre-bit meeting but he wasn't there so they opening his buddy was or I have a motion a second for approval and a little bit all in favor recommendations salvage food service items yeah so just doing a little cleanup uh if any of you guys are looking for super spins for flower sifters any of that type of stuff we pass it around to the different kitchens home at classrooms they took what they needed and the rest uh we're just going to donate to Lighthouse ministers or someplace and get rid of it it creates some open storage so we just need a recommendation to say we're going to establish it so that we can get ready yeah no I appreciate the donation peace with that do I have a motion all in favor say all right all right last item this evening is recommendation to prune reappointment from Marcia Jones to the Troyer Memorial Library board which is Emma fountain in terms of four years from February 1st of this year to January 31st of 2027.

I have no idea why 2122 was not included while I do understanding understanding no testing was done in 2019-20 due to covid there's no excuse for failing numbers both Guilford and New Fairfield which were referenced repeatedly in this report for comparison went up in both areas this shows no effort has been put in our special ed population I can only imagine after the last catastrophic year how bad the numbers are that being said I sit here month after month hearing about brookfield's portrait of a graduate critical and creative thinkers communicators collaborators and change makers what administration and Board of Ed fails to remember is that the over 300 identified students in this District are also portraits of our graduates to me they all fit the criteria only in their own way but without support they will not reach their full potential I'm excited about what I've heard about the new special ed director and what he along with the other two special ed administrators can do to start putting Brookfield back on the right track I only hope you don't put up roadblocks to stop change I also just want to take a second to thank all of the teachers support staff and paraprofessionals who never give up on our kids and are striving to have them reach their goals every day realizing like it or not these kids will be portraits of the graduates thank you thank you [Applause] second speaker I'm here this evening to discuss the correct report in the overall climate regarding special education the correct review sadly gave little to no information as you have heard the same issues from parents meeting after meeting for the past 18 months for free for a thirty thousand dollar price tag I was expecting a real picture of what was going on but that is not what was presented in the report sadly the report that stands to make a real difference as far as budget drivers hasn't even been done yet regarding outplacement social emotional and self-contained students while taking the time to really look at the correct review I began to immediately question the validity of it when I learned that only 23.33 of our staff actually participated in the survey that is very disappointing numbers to say the least and I'm curious as to what the district did to encourage participation amongst our staff or to fill out a survey of this significance the climate that you have allowed to be created and burn out of control within the special education department this past school year is inexcusable to all the stakeholders but more importantly the students and our staff while I find it absolutely appalling is that this review told special education parents what we suspected all along that there wasn't a plan for our different abled children 71.1 percent of our parents who were surveyed completed the survey and felt that their children could be challenged more if that is not telling that our system is completely broken I don't know what is so I ask when you continuously paint beautiful pictures of the new strategic plan and portrait of a graduate that you remember every child no matter how they're classified on paper or regardless of weakness or disability serves deserves to be part of that plan for years parents have been told that our identified students are regular education students first which couldn't be further from the truth and now we have confirmation there has never been a plan for them I would want I would once again like to welcome Bill Roland to the district your communication and responsiveness to questions and concerns has already shown a drastic improvement in what we have been what we've had prior I only hope that the that Bill had the board and the administration's full support to make the necessary changes that are so desperately needed [Applause] with me I didn't see a sheet up here but I would like to speak and sign up but a much stronger what we're starting what do you say what agenda what's your gender topic my topic is a lawsuit against the Brookfield okay that's it that'll I'll let you talk but it'll be at the end of itself I'm going to add you to the left right so we're going to move on to and by the way we do not have a long agenda this evening I don't it won't be very long so next up is uh written correspondence Victoria you're going to you're going to cover for anything yes I will right okay uh Adriana Hackett regarding a thank you letter for Dr Berlin Dr Mann and also from Andrea paltoff as well thanking them for their leadership Aaron sclera two correspondents regarding foyer requests about legal fees Jillian Doherty support of the book this book is gay and Dupree regarding book Banning and I got Steph Knack regarding the opt-out process for books next up is approval award payments recommended motion that the board approve the minutes listed below as recommended regular meeting on June 7th special meeting on June 15th special meeting on June 22nd special meeting on July 6th and special meeting on July 12th and seconded and he suggested edits over concerns hearing none all in favor okay um bro um so we are moving along with the school project the high school field and painting projects the track project the locker room project course underway is our summer school program and ELC programs so there's a lot of activity in school s in addition to that when we get the consent agenda we're actually at the end of my hiring faculty it's really important to know that the district implementation plan Dr Mann and I have been going to work on that um turn forward it's all of our Solutions of course actually Joy is going to do something with us next week so we're actually excited about that opportunity and I appreciate that but that is underway course the principles are working not only on summer work and getting their schools ready but in your faculty ready in terms of their school's Improvement plans based on scores and things like that to that kindergarten enrollment we're right at 156 which is a couple more students than we had the last time I reported so our eight sections that gives us 19.5 students per class right there with the range so do want to emphasize we really don't want to talk about the new age for September one on kids turning five or September one next year to start kindergarten because they do not want to confuse any of our new parents they ever commit our parents and start bringing their first child regard enough on their plate with that and wondering when can be like an orientation is going to happen in Canada like that end well we're paying attention to a number of questions group we'll read this that fall if there's any caveats or special things we want to talk about as we plan for Budget we start planning for next year we don't want to start talking about that now because that'll confuse everybody regular December 31st during five coming to kindergarten if you're registered for kindergarten at Candlewood Lake relax nothing's changed the next piece in terms of just District technology Eric's been working very diligently with virtual towns website you're doing major overhaul and update and we're going to have that through our website we'll get a lot more user friendly one of the things that virtual Townsend schools is doing is they're working on firming up their data migration let's start the project until not served up on day a lot of problems they want to take more of an opportunity to files on the website so it can really turn over quite quickly it probably will happen in September October given all the tech work we're doing in the district and of course as part of the tech updates we also will have a new phone system in probably about two weeks at school that's the same phone system that's going into the new Source Library C pieces is seven um all right so good evening everyone the office of human resources and curriculum have been pretty um we after completing a pretty busy spring hiring a bunch of Administrators including our new our incoming Director of Finance our new director of special education and our supervisor of Elementary education special education as well as preparing for esy for extended school we are moved right into hiring for the 23 23 for school year including including Pride Staff so I just wanted to give you a few updates on where we are with that we have had 12 openings for fortified staff here when I did a new teacher orientation we had 20 20 teachers so we're not anywhere in where we were last year and two of those positions are actually long-term one-year leads events so really we're at 10 um retirements that we were celebrating at the end of the year and so with that at this point we have four of the three of the other three other of those positions are very very very close so we're hoping to get those wrapped up and all of the positions have applicants just a note our end of students position um Garner 68 applicants ton of applicants who are Jewish students and so Dean Brenda has worked really hard to on that and that's one of the ones that so we're hoping for big news with all of these positions I think that one of the reasons for um you know our continued excitement for moving into I definitely based on the decision that Dr Burrell had and with the support board to not send out the non-renewal letters we've gotten a lot of really pop py um that support from the board and then come back to grill it's gone a long way with our daddy new teacher orientation is going to be August 28-20 .com we start convocation and back to school work with our teachers um and we're building that agenda and we also as I mentioned our curriculum work with Keith a little bit about the work that we're doing our 10 the cape committee specifically Rose I had a really good idea for maybe middle of the year I can give a presentation and I'd love to work with joy on this enjoys professional background to just go over what does it mean to review and revise and reflect on curriculum you know what writing of curriculum process for the need because we talk about it a lot and it's kind of the core and Foundation of our instructional practices but sometimes people don't know what that means so um I'll look forward to folks maybe I'll even have some people who are currently writing directly I don't haven't present what they've done so that's kind of just an update for me I said a quick question for John so you said um we have eight sections of kindergarten correct yes all right so we have four sections of 19 students and four sections of 20. essentially what is our remind me our Board of Ed a target range what is our range here 17 to 20 right kindergarten 1720.

okay okay I see there's one I'll mention that we go to uh they've kind of got that type set up but then they've added a little raised up area stage on the far sides of the kids are up higher they've got seats down on the floor for programs I mean is that something that that is you've done before we have and that is certainly something you can consider here I I that's why they raise it up it's the people sitting on the floor can see yeah twice as many people said we've done quite a few of those other videos they have questions well let's just go quicker this time not I'm you know I'm not going to reiterate again uh how the numbers are put together but just in summary um if you look at your cost option number two hard construction costs as noted online item 54 is a little over 21 million um and then when you add soft costs against engineering architectural fees and then the blue section all of the potential owners soft costs at the 20 Factor option two uh equates to about 26.5 million dollars top of this option but I just thought of something that kind of goes back to the shirt frequently so you said how do you make this work where you have existing kids so how do we make shark treats the uh there are a lot of different ways to look at it the conversation we had about this was to build the gym first in that hallway we put some temporary partitions up in that gymnasium before the floor goes down with the concrete's down there we can move a gym this size we can probably get 10 classrooms in there so we could literally do renovate 10 classrooms at a time in Shark Creek by having the kids set up in temporary release of nature Supreme it's a It's actually an approach we took are still involved with down at New Palestine just on the east side of Indianapolis they we tore down a chunk of their high school that was once upon a time little Elementary that got connected to smaller by Francisco we tore that all down we're Innovative expanding their building well they needed rooms because we were tearing them down like bugs and they were full they actually looked at the cost of modular classrooms weighed that against the cost of a new Field House the three four Field House for an added cost of I don't know something like 42 million dollars we build a new field house and put temporary rooms and they cycle 18 classrooms through at a time worked out pretty well and when it's all done you don't have any feelings so okay the last option add on to Moore's field and tear down shark screws and that would create a building that has trades 3 through 12 things now obviously we want to keep three through five somewhat separated but when we look at the property how you might add on we pretty quickly zeroed in on the shop classes for two reasons one you don't use those shops the way they were designed intended built in the first place two they they need a lot of attention just to get them back up to sort of quality spaces to be in the first place so if you're going to have to spend a lot of money to fix them and they're not exactly the spaces you are wanting them to be nowadays it sort of makes sense just to tear them down let's build new and what Dr said was give me two rooms four Ag and a CTE program that have outdoor access and so that was our approach going in so if you flip the sheet or flip the page this approach grabs from the northwest corner of the classroom block at Northfield we took that Northwest classroom and extended it to the west and make that our new office for the three fives part of this building with the secure entrance there off the parking lot kind of back into the account become just behind it or into the hall or into a hall at that point then come north and we're able in a fairly tight little pot of the hallways to get 14 classrooms so three four and five three grade rooms per classroom and that's nine plus an art plus music I think Chris was looking at 12 and that even gives you a couple spirits just to start out with yellow spaces again bathrooms the nines might be support spaces either for the gym or for the school the gym sets to the West it begins to move towards to our existing gym and field house locker rooms off the back of it and we can connect to the lobby to The Varsity gym so Mr Holly has another contained Courtyard he's got to take care of them he needs that drone with the lawnmower but that's the approach to this is you see the green heading down through the existing hallway that's the location that's been pegged out for the sixth graders to move to and while there's no intention of renovating the home after the science areas we just kind of highlighted you could get four good-sized classrooms out of that space if you thought about how do you deal with facts and how you deal with that program while you're thinking about ctg and some of the other things so then we looked at Ag and whatever the other CTE program might be that you're looking at and we gave you a couple 1200 square foot classrooms down here on the southwest corner and they can be whenever you want them to be at that point as long as we have a way to get out of that home so I thought by keeping them separate it keeps them flexibility for what those programs become or what you think they are and what those physical constructions need to be that's how we looked at this approach any questions with this one I guess the first thing I I see is we've got three through five there and just have two bathrooms well yeah it would be um probably boys and girls on both sides those are big enough boxes so just like all the rest so we got at least three or four minutes the bathroom ingredients and those and the details we need to work through that's a valid concern consent uh the one thing I do like about it was sixth grade going in where they've been picked for it also puts this office in close proximity to support whatever the Middle School how you manage that and how you deal with that so that was just something that sort of worked out for us it wasn't necessarily a whole lot of thought giving too I should flip over to the site you'll notice we highlighted the additions in yellow like we've done on the others the thought being the loop rope will be extended on around you see that box off to the West Side that's the existing playground just kind of picked up and moved over obviously when we moved the playground it's all new we rarely know the existing equipment the insurance companies don't like that um it's a shame another location after we laid this out that got brought up and discussed was you're looking at redoing the tennis courts if the tennis courts were to move East potentially that playground could move to the north of this building and leave you more of that whole parking lot out there for cars and whatnot so you could have more space out there after we turn on Shark Creek at the present time you see a welding and stuff that goes on up there anymore little shop area it's very little at the North side it depends its teacher in the mirror there was some before but um south side of that guy he likes to learn right my question is so that would be completely important there would be no choice what can you kind of lose could those be fabricated to still make that out of two different classrooms they could be bigger they could be defined and constructed in a way to have welding or a little higher roof to bring some kind of equipment in there if you wanted we just haven't got to that level for the purposes of this there are two big questions for the purposes of Evan David estimated something to compare the options yeah and those are good questions because also what we're thinking about Heartland as far as do we ever have on there and we have more students still or not go right because typically those programs those students are going there but you know sometimes you have those wheel classes that you know they they explore those situations so there's a lot of questions from that too right I want you to the Future even a part one and how that works the next question is how do you do the lunch you go you build a clear crossover so I know Metro North was a long long for all those kids too experience that was we have that conversation and the plan is to come on kids got anything yesterday it was a big enough to support all that yeah you have to recall that um you know back uh when population was huge with 778 kids in that building just like we did a side of the two because those numbers I keep on remembering those because we saw me out of the EDM and then well they didn't call me the impact that they called it just regular enrollment so one was 778-782 now as far as having three sections or three you know we probably would have to have another section another but there would be enough room to do that well so I mean yeah I guess I would think about you know like naturally 10 45 some of those kids because of space you know do you have to do that here to these kids or you know right now they go from 11 15 basically they start until about 12 45 that's what it is now the three section yes that's the spam that's not exactly right because I think the bell rings at level 13 or something like that but uh which is a lot of sharp critics doing also our first launch is at 10 45 now with four great levels so it wasn't even new to kids okay so there are Logistics to work out and in any in all the plans actually so I guess the one thing that I is because of what you were already saying what water I guess what are your thoughts on if we did the Metro the Sharp Creek sounds like we still need to do something to the Ag Department buildings yeah well you know we talked about when we talk about the Strategic plan we know this is just another uh section of that another priority um and so there are priorities in the future that we would like to look at to do other things and there are things that we have to do those are some of the things that we talked about last summer of course by the Fall that we knew that um we need to move forward with something different that we would have to continue just like we're doing now and I'll only give an update later on on the all the projects that we're doing right now during our regular board meeting that those are some other priorities that we've had to continue to look at so that gym is the same size as the other two sites yes sir let me quickly looking at the numbers on this option um live item number 57 a hard construction cost so about 28 almost 28.8 million um well that I'm sorry that includes design construction only cost is 9947 at a little over 27 million um and you throw in all the hard costs on this particular option uh you're almost at 34.2 million we did include an alternate cost on this one as Dana mentioned earlier earlier the possibility of relocating the tennis courts um if that was an option you would want to consider um the budget number on that is about 970 000 to to locate that [Music] looking at that so why is it because of demolition problems it's like seems like we're getting less with that project as just as much as it is uh Personal Insurance Creek and then Metro it looks like we're getting more and it's cheaper sure well at least one of the options you'll see um the square footage that's been included in whether it's new construction or renovation and if you look at Option One it looks like we're touching about 69 400 or 69 000 forests for fee option two we're touching about 49 300 square feet and then option three we're touching what is that 57 600 square feet and just a reminder that we are going to let everyone have a chance to look over this again digest it some more and then the finance to come back on the 25th which is two weeks from now to have another work session just so that after you look at this and hearing the presentation by uh Dean and Dave that uh you know you can ask more questions because there is obviously a lot to consider and you can maybe take more time to digest it a little bit more since they have presented it to us so we would like to finish this up in just a couple two or three minutes so we can get ready for the other meeting but for today for them to look at any other situations questions about any of the work that you they have done is there anything else you have or if you think of something between now and next two or two weeks from a day you can let me know or Chris and we can get those questions to them too so how long would these like is there any one of them that could take less time and more time what kind of time frame you know if you started a project how long would it take um that was asked in an earlier meeting and I think I said anywhere between 18 2018 24 months depending on the phasing it's a phasing that gets you can do it all at one time we could probably get in 12 or 14 but when you get into her face and that really extends things I don't think we have a summary coming up that would be 12 or 14 miles per month [Music] since lastly of the three I mean with the kids and everything what would be your choice of the three just from a logistical yeah you get a report back on that are you don't give an answer but we do know that Sharp Creek right the Sharp Creek model you would have to move students like you're saying but that would probably be the most difficulties it's renovating Sharp Creek but so what I'm looking at to me that'd be all those classrooms and everything yeah and like Dana we've done this before we get it for Adams County school where we put on the gym and then we built temperate classrooms inside and it works but it's was that Adam Central or yeah I'm sorry yeah Central yeah so you use so you use like the field house yeah that they put up wood semi-permanent partition where the teachers could hang forwards on the walls and desk in the rooms and they had doors uh they need to work helps your kids behave because everybody hears when someone gets in trouble you know but I think that one logistically would probably be the most difficult the other two I'd have to have to set it down a little bit more if one's more difficult than the other obviously two of them are very close in cost um even those square footage [Music] don't worry about you're getting another let's say 12 000 square foot versus one of three options you're going to spend that kind of money I don't know I just was looking if if I ripped your numbers down right and I was comparable I don't have anymore if you don't have any more questions for now I will shut our Facebook live off and get ready for our next meeting any other questions don't want to do I'm going to cut out since we have the experts here tonight okay all right [Music]
