and something magical happened to them as soon as they got to the Grundy County Line 47 turned into four lanes and we can't get Route 30 and it's not going to happen over the next five years because you can pull up the Illinois Department of transportation's priorities and over the next five years Route 30 is not on there I'm not sure if people realize this but the moment that Route 30 gets on there the intersections because the intersections at 111th 119th wolf and all those intersections along Lakewood Creek and Route 30 they belong to the Illinois Department of Transportation and the moment that that road becomes a priority every single one of those intersections automatically gets reconfigured and we have access to how many state leaders in these communities and federal municipalities and all these different taxing bodies and so I applaud but there are problems that we face today that the only solutions are in the past they're not now the only thing we can do is look forward and um and we have to right we have to have a plan moving forward I am excited that Wolf Road will be expanded however it's going to take 10 years and we're building along that road what will that look like anyone who's been out on 34 knows that it's now a constant parking lot not just a parking lot during the busy times this is how fragile our infrastructure is here and it is absolutely part maybe even most I don't know of the reason for some of the trepidation that all of us face 25 minutes might be gracious for some of the commutes that some people are taking um it's a problem and it is time for leaders to come together and have these discussions because there has to be a plan the stress level can already be felt and cut with a knife um one thing and I'll end and I apologize to my fellow board members for this but one one thing to keep in consideration if you really want to look forward I want to always leave with kind of a warning the vast majority of this District is wide open land to the south of here and the vast majority of the schools are in the northern part of the district pay very close attention tonight to these Bond the the conversation centered around bonds what we've done with them how much debt we still have all of those conversations are important because if people don't sell their houses and stay here but we build and all of our kids are now in the southern part of this District in 10 or 15 years and all of our schools are in the northern part of this District in 10 or 15 years I can guarantee for those who have not listened this entire time we will have a very heated conversation in about a decade about boundaries because good luck drawing those boundaries if that occurs and for those who are listening you can't say it wasn't said I have two items so on Saturday uh Community cares and Kiwanis held their backpack event where we distributed hundreds of backpacks to kids in the district to get ready for the start of school along with school supplies several board members are on hand I know Dominic was there Mary Jo was there Latonya was there Jared was there I was there Jen was there directing traffic filling backpacks taking orders I don't know what you would call it with the clipboard right a great event lots of community volunteers there lots of smiles a little bit of rain but it happened and we have hundreds of kids now with backpacks and school supplies ready to go and with that we wish all of those students and all of our students a great you know first day back my second comment is just in regards to just an idea or Empower school we have lots in the upcoming weeks lots of I don't know you would call them you come meet your teacher days right so we're gonna have lots of parents in schools I know I'll be at the high school getting my girls registered and ready to go this week and sometimes technology just needs like a Hands-On person to sit next to you and help you say push that now click here and so it might be a good in-person opportunity to have someone there as a resource and at other at all schools as parents are in the building agreed and your principle is such a great place to start for every any questions you have and anything you need um I know that I am meeting my son's principal tomorrow for the first time so I look forward to that I just wanted to wish all of our Educators our teachers our staff there are so many people behind the scenes working to do our best to present our buildings and our um and our property uh to the students and the staff on the first day they take a lot of pride in it and it's so easy to pick apart the things that could be done better but it also really helps if we come together and I love the video that you showed and really try to instill that Joy because the thing that we are the the product the service that we're bringing in is education and um there is nothing better than looking at a student's face on the first day of school coming back and seeing their friends and meeting their teachers and so forth so to our Administration to our teachers to our custodial staff our building staff our Tas and most especially our students the future is so bright and we wish you uh just the the best year a year of Excellence a year of Joy a year of relationship building um and some some high academic standards as well just one last thing it's so busy there's so much going on uh but uh Dr Kill Daddy is still doing his meet and greets in the community and so lots of board members have been in attendance at those um I was at one this week and I have others on my calendar so if you haven't had a chance yet Community to meet Dr Phil Gotti and hear a little bit about his vision for for 308 in his leadership I encourage you to find a time and place to do that and I know those dates and times and places are available online Scotty so if you don't get to any of the meet and greets there will be an opportunity and that information will be forthcoming so 7.1 the consent agenda are there any questions on the consent agenda a motion to approve [Music] promotions you approve all items under consent including minutes from the special Board of Education workshop on July 1st 2023 open and closed session and from the Board of Education meeting on July 10 2023 open and closed session and to acknowledge the foia request received by the district second Mr Gatewood hi Dr Maria aye Ms Johnson aye Mr Cerrone aye Ms simultan aye Mr Folger hi Miss manmuth aye motion passes 7-0 does the board have any questions on the financial statements we have with us uh snow removal contract we have uh Bill Queen with hills this evening if there are any questions the board may have on this item I know some were sent earlier and thank you Bill for sharing those um if there are any final questions about that regarding the snow removal I have a couple um Andre please come on up to can you just share a little bit about from what I understand this snow removal contract will cover 11 schools the remainder of the schools we will be handling internally yes and why have we done this before I just don't have it yes so this is how we've done business with snow removal for a long time now um we just don't have the capacity or the equipment to cover all the buildings as a whole for the district we would love to but just we're just not there yet perfect understood and then um obviously Montgomery Landscaping was the lowest bid do we know and was it I don't know if it was a part of the bid bidding process that they in their reputation can handle kind of the time sensitivity of this of 11 schools which is a pretty hearty contract great question yes so we've been working with Montgomery I can only go back 30 years but I'm told even further yet they're handling our locations like the high schools DAC um transportation those early early start areas they've hit for us pretty good so they're great relationship and we're only giving them three more schools okay great they handle the pretty much the whole kabang yeah and and it is only as needed so like when we don't need to call these guys out and I can take it with my team we will certainly do so okay what should we get one of our fun days where we get dumped on we will have them and they'll be able to come in in a timely manner to make sure our our staff that arise earlier than our students um absolutely yeah we start at about 2 2 30 in the morning great that makes me feel better we and I'm not gonna hold you to know I'm remembering so don't worry but did we even use anybody last year I mean last year was just exaggerated March the whole time wasn't it yeah no we we use Montgomery for that base hole again and then we had another contractor but I'm what I'm saying is did we really need him last year I don't even know of course no it was a good year for us yeah three to four times three to four times that we had to call people off so we did really good thank you gentlemen thank you okay next uh we will have a resolution providing for the issue of General obligation refunding School bonds uh we've invited Dr petsky and Bob Lewis from PMA who are here to share presentation and answer any questions you may have hey good evening board hello hey so um I'm here with a Community member and a District parent and also our financial advisor Bob Lewis from PMA we sold bonds at the last board meeting there were a couple questions so in this next Bond sale we figured we'd bring a little bit more information to the board so today we'll talk about the refunding opportunity that we have in front of us again but we'll also add in there just a little overview of our uh District debt and then we'll also go into a little bit about the process and the participants in the actual sale of a bond and how that works um so what we're here the the sale that we're here today to talk about is our 2014 bonds are callable on February 1st in 2024 and we're allowed 90 days before that call date to sell the bonds uh the uh bonds of 2014 bonds represent about 9.6 million dollars of our total 226 million dollar debt overview or it's a 10 bonds that we currently have uh the average rate of that Bond right now is 4.17 percent and uh let's see uh standard public offering for the refunding of the bonds uh we're looking at while while we say we we will try to sell them before September the reality is based on market conditions we'll try to price those bonds at the end of September and have a closing in early November so I would have some more information about to the board about what the status of that sale then so while the resolution talks about selling them by the end of February we're hoping it'll be a little bit sooner so what I'm going to do now is basically turn it over to Bob and let him go through the process and answer any other questions that you might have uh in the district debt overview or the process and participants thank you John so the next slide here shows you the estimated savings now the savings opportunity with this one is not as great as the one that we discussed previously that's for a couple reasons this issue bond issue doesn't go out as many years so just like if you refinance your home you're going to save more money on a 20-year mortgage than you would on a 10-year mortgage and the other thing is the interest rate on these average is 4.17 percent the interest rate on the 2013 bonds was I don't remember the exact number was closer to five percent so four six five okay thank you so those two reasons mean that the refinancing opportunity in terms of reduce debt service is not as great as it was on the last one so as John mentioned these bonds also have different call date these bonds are not called February 1st the prior bond issue was called on October 1st and as the taxes on bond issue we have to follow the rules set forth by the IRS so if a bonds call them on February 1st their earliest you can close is early November and you can usually sell within five to six weeks of that so that's those are the estimated dates that we have right there should the board consider and accept the can I interject one thing just to make sure everybody at home understands when we say we're going to save over two hundred thousand dollars what that means is hey that doesn't mean all sudden the school district has two hundred thousand dollars what that means is you know all that debt that we have we're gonna pay two hundred thousand dollars Less on that debt am I correct you are 100 so thank you I'm sorry you're gonna get me a little bit um when you say we it's a community that's correct so about 25 of our taxes that we pay to the school district goes to our towards our bonds um and then so this will directly it'll lower that portion of of the the tax bill um that's correct or it'll be lower than it would have been it yes and and just to just to clarify you're talk we're talking about issuing new bonds 20 and 23 and 24 to retire the old bonds that is correct okay and it wasn't quite clear the way it was it was listed just wanted to be sure thanks yeah and another thing that oftentimes comes up in these conversations because whether you're board members community members you're trying to equate this to what we might do in our home mortgages that's our biggest debt item that is we have as individuals and oftentimes people the mortgage brokers tell you hey you're going to save x amount per month well they don't tell you necessarily that you're extending the term of your mortgage to get some of that savings so here you'll notice that the original bonds are going to retire in fiscal year 2030 and the new bonds would retire that same year so there's no change in the payment cycle so in Prior presentations I know there's been some questions about the district's outstanding debt obligations in the aggregate so we want to provide more information on that and the potential opportunities that exist as a result of this these Debt Service payments so this graphical representation here shows the district's combined principal and interest of those remaining Bond issues this first year is levier 22 Levy year 22 is collected in calendar year 23.

there will be a new assessment and it's not an end of the year assessment it's throughout the year assessment of Standards type so when you're looking at this if everything we went by was the test scores and the tests continue to change and the parameters and the benchmarks and the cutoffs continue to change every year I think that makes it challenging but the state did give the freedom a couple years ago and say because before we always had a line on a plan on there about our school library and they removed that they had a line item requirement about standardized test scores and they removed that light on item two so that could be some changes that you're seeing there as well tour may seem inflated compared to some of our scores that you're seeing published appreciate that I've got a couple here Dr plea one is what what is kind of the average length of a teacher observation I would say the the one of the observing in the for this year that current year one had to be formal in nature and the second one could be formal or informal and the formal in nature I would say it depended on a class period what that lasts so I would say for me if it was when I was a principal it would have been 90 minutes if it was for reading and it may have been 45 minutes for Math and I think some of our high schools it's for a block but I would say average I will probably be about 45 minutes because if you're looking at more of content areas throughout our district and probably about 45 minute for that one but the second one can be an informal in nature it can consist of walk-throughs throughout the second semester it can be the teacher presenting at PD meetings it can be the performance of how case conferences were handled our parent-teacher conferences um so there are a multitude of ways for a teacher to Showcase their other professional attributes in another fashion rather than the observation in the classroom the standard thank you thank you so I have an observation of that question but but actually just pick a piggy tail on that and am I correcting remembering the second one can be unscheduled as well which I think is important for people to know yeah so the second one there have been changes with that one too so it can be unscheduled and then we added the language for this coming year the second one if the teacher needs the second one it can be informal or formal in nature and the if they choose the informal that's a collective agreement between the principal and the teacher because some teachers have the preference of don't tell me when you're coming just show up it shouldn't matter what day you come in my classroom so my observation is on this um because I love bar charts but um we're looking at it by year but I think it's important for us to remember that those aren't the same teachers each year so I mean one of the things that I thought was kind of cool was the the steady growth in udl and then when you layer on top of that that I don't know what percent new teachers each year but for many of those teachers udl is a New Concept when they come to bcsc so that that even speaks more to the to the growth particularly in the Udo section there my question is on the next sheet with all the data so I know effective and highly effective is is individual teachers but looking at the averages from 2223 what is the breaking point score wise between effective and highly effective when we when we look at the 3.62 and 3.49 highly effective begins at 3.26 so all of those averages are actually within the highly effective yeah the students success is the one that's okay thank you sure I do have one more so and I I know your answer to this can be it was probably a little bit deceiving because evaluations have the different components but do you know about what percentage of bcsc teachers were evaluated at needs Improvement or ineffective about two percent and that that includes some that were evaluated at effective or very effective but certain areas maybe need Improvement correct yes you could have line items that came out to be ineffective or needs Improvement but the overall rating will not be that way yes questions yeah I think one thing that would help me and I think would probably help everybody else is if we could get the questions that are asked that we understand a little bit more about the criteria for so you mentioned there might be four points that are being viewed during these evaluations and assessments I think that would help a little bit because I think that would probably answer most of the questions have been asked already the only other thing I had was if you go to the schools um page it there were three schools that really two or three schools that stood out so Southern Indiana Indiana Wesleyan and Indiana University Southeast those three schools look like they had the highest scores but they also have a low number so the sample size is small correct right I mean you're going to get a lot more good better and worse teachers at IU where you've got 152 compared to Southern Indiana that has eight what I didn't know is do we actively go to those three schools and try to go from 8 to 10 or from 19 to 25 to try and pull in some of that talent that seems to be performing very well and maybe obviously we're so close to IU that you really don't have to recruit hard you know they know where we're at they can make the drive easy but some of these other schools may not know us as well we need to recruit-hearted anyone that will give us the opportunity to recruit heart so IU does have a student teaching recruiting Fair IU also has a teacher hiring Fair most of these other ones Ball State does an online one other than that most universities because they're pool of teachers and their education departments have declined so much they're not even having the teacher Affairs anymore so when we do our bcsc virtual fair to help attract teachers and the you know that are getting ready to graduate from the universities we make sure we push this flyer out to all of these universities in our education departments and ask them to share since they're not having teacher fairs to help get the word out and Mr major you also made the comment about seeing the document it was a great segue of how I was going to end and we will be publishing our new evaluation document tomorrow on our website so if you go to the bcsc website it's under HR certified and teacher evaluation plan thank you and all the rubrics are there for all the different rubrics that we have Mr now so I just can't pass up the opportunity to point out that correlation does not imply cause spoken math teacher math teacher non-certified staff similar process just different different rubric is that how that works for our classified staff again all of them need to be evaluated annually and it's on udl PBIS and professionalism those are the categories we use so all of our all employees get evaluated on the one two three four okay thank you Dr pleek thank you very much okay Dr Bozeman we're warmed up for you sir I was I was considering Mr major how to uh mention I'm a southern Indian Indiana graduate from your other comment so I couldn't come up with a good way to say it so uh so good evening everybody thanks for making some time every every year in August we give a facility Improvement update of both major and and less than major projects we had going on across the district um I have uh Chris and Nate from Maxwell construction they are our construction managers for the Parkside renovation and um the East athletic project and then Greg Ferguson is our project manager for bcsc and Drew mynance our manager of Maintenance who he oversees many of the smaller projects that are on here a little gentleman will be happy to answer your questions here in a few minutes uh this is these are the items I'll cover with you tonight most of these you're aware of uh but just kind of a reminder of how we spent our time over the past few months especially over the summer it's been very busy the Parkside Elementary renovation as you well know is about a 19 million dollar full interior renovation we just finished up uh Greg did not accept my bet that we wouldn't be ready for school and he was right I was wrong we were ready for kids in the main office at Parkside we just finished phase four in the green there open phase three which is the blue purple color and now we're in Phase five um demo over here so this is a a 10 week or 10 phase uh project at Parkside that I know you're familiar with that is scheduled to be complete at the uh in the summer of 24 so we have a few photos to share with you as you know each of the grade levels have common learning spaces now this is second grade which you'll see on the right hand side the left is a small group room I'll give you a few other photos of that here's a second uh this is a group we were touring about two weeks ago looking out from the cafeteria into uh which would be the new place base and the bus slide I'll share some photos with that this was where the stage was at Parkside it's been opened up and finished um you'll see here in a couple minutes and added the windows for the inclusion of natural light this is that same common space without the technology installed quite yet and furniture that came a couple a couple of days later you'll see water availability and clean lab space on the left-hand side there so kids can engage in messy activities and not have to worry about too much about staining carpet and that sort of thing uh the float on the left is [Music] um two two mentions there the natural beams that are architecturally significance for the building and remain and then the occlusion some in some areas that natural light those windows were closed in by dropped ceilings before so they've been exposed and then the photo on the right is um if you can believe in all the piping in this building was under the slab originally within the building so the decision was either tear up the large majority of the slab of the building or put the piping outside so if you've driven by Parkside you'll see around the perimeter of the building lots of work happening for the domestic and hydronic piping and that'll be restored and the trees will be replanted once that's that's finished there uh this is a picture of the student cubbies you may recall those previously were in the hallway and taking up a lot of learning space so now they're within the classrooms this is actually an adjoining classroom between two and then the restroom you can see there on the right I took this photo I think an hour after Furniture started to come in so you'll see it's a little bit dusty and dirty in there yet but the picture with the furniture in these common spaces look like and then again that small group room a lot of natural glass right there behind and then Clash them on either side this is a photo of the stem lab which you uh you view the last time we were Touring that building and a lot of a lot of care and thought had gone into the cafeteria both in the natural green color of the furniture but also you don't know you don't see too many long uh linear tables so they're round tables now and they're different sizes in different parts of the cafeteria and then the same flooring is here as you can see throughout the building in the places that are finished and that's another view out to that space that I mentioned there a few minutes ago just behind before freedom field there is the new bus lot where that pickup truck is that's paved over now that is finished for now the buses won't occupy that space until the start of the 24-25 school year but you can see the new sidewalks that go around there and then that space in the middle will be play play area grass for students once it's once it's complete and that's a picture my boss welcome to the kindergarten area I just thought it was a nice picture so we threw that in there appreciate it as well next uh Columbus East athletic improvements I know you're familiar with this project also this uh this is about a 5.8 million dollar project that includes both athletic lights at Columbus North High School which is the South Side Elementary which are complete and then substantial work at Columbus East everything in a dark in color there is new but you can see a new softball field to the right new baseball infield Turf and then all of the cross-stitch areas all new concrete Plaza with a new concession stand locker room and restroom area to the north of the football field that's a description of or a diagram of what the that concession building will look like and a close-up of where it's located we're finishing up on the new visitor bleacher installation at Columbus East on the football field and some Press Box Renovations there this this it looks really nice uh it'll be ready to go in time for their first home game which happens to be Columbus North High School so we're excited about that fencing will go it's already in between the track and the and the sidewalk there be a real nice place for for visiting Spectators the concession stand to the north you can kind of see there that will not be ready for the football season that won't be ready to go until baseball softball season in the spring it's a picture of the baseball infield to the left and one of the dugouts that's going in to the right that's on the softball diamond this is the softball Diamond just the same view a little bit further back it'll be all full Turf as I as I mentioned uh the lights are up they're not functional quite yet but they're up and then the the pole you see in the immediate foreground there that's that's for the uh The netting that captures the foul balls that are hit uh they won't have chain link fence we'll have netting that gathers the ball and a little safer that way uh the next couple items I'll roll through uh pretty quickly here but I'll I'll put them together each year we spend about a million and a half dollars or so give or take on what we call smaller cpf projects so those would be projects that are usually well under a hundred thousand dollars each um and I think Drew had 105 or so this year that he worked on and is still working on so I'll I I will not show you all 105 but I'll show you a few here so each year we resurface gym floors these are two that we've done recently and then we added the addition uh for the Rock Creek Court purdier approval a few months ago to recognize coach uh Gary Barker over there I think they're going to have an event for Coach Parker here in a few weeks to commemorate that and have some speakers there new wrestling mats at North High School new carpet and the third floor of Columbus East High School in the classrooms some sidewalk improvements at fodria nursing station improvements at Southside Elementary each year it kind of goes back and forth on some of you we get uh focused a little more heavily on interior improvements and exterior the next year so this kind of goes back and forth a little bit running track improvements both at North side and North exterior step Renovations at CSA Lincoln The Taylorsville roof project this was uh this was a good Greg had led this it was a good project that came in well under budget we were very happy with that we replaced a good portion of the roof at Taylorsville about five years ago and put solar panels on top and then this is a finishing out of the the remaining roof that was we had originally there from 1998 so we had a good good 25 year run with that we also did several parking lot Paving projects this is um just me turning to my right on that same roof and taking a photo of Taylorsville uh you might be excited you might be surprised how excited people get about parking lots looking nice but it's a big deal so that's a photo of taylorsville's parking lot and I think we did how many parking lots we do nine across the district no lines in this one yet when you parked here so we'll uh we'll work on that tomorrow but we'll finish them up right now um some classroom um Cubbies at Rock Creek Elementary and then we every year we put quite a bit of time and effort into replacement of an upkeep of our security systems when we answer questions just In fairness I'm a little guarded on security questions and happy to talk with you afterwards but we're a little protected on uh details of where and how and to what extent and all that sort of thing but do know that we we have a cycle that we replace a lot of our cameras we have well over a thousand cameras in the in the district and that's one example that's uh parking lot at East High School I think I won't read these to you this is not an all-encompassing list but some other examples of projects that have been completed over the spring and summer from the 2023 cpf list at the buildings listed there and then this is the second slide in my last slide with some other items that we've addressed across the district as well happen to answer any questions you may have any questions from the team I don't have a question but I will make a comment the bus drivers are very happy about the uh Paving project like I said it's people get excited about that stuff so I like to keep them happy thank you very good thank you okay I don't think we have any more cabinet reports right those are the only two we had scheduled so we can move to the next section can we have the there you go okay before I get to this there's a lot of others okay I wanted to remind people of we talked a little bit about public comment policy at the beginning we had another subcommittee that focused on our um our meeting agendas that we did approve as a board and we had agreed to act in a certain way as we update our policy so just a reminder on public comment portion this is an opportunity for public to provide comments to the board but it is not a time for dialogue there won't be back and forth they won't be questions asked and answered this is really a one-way communication okay so we have other forms for that but in this business meeting it is one way um we were going to prioritize agenda items as as Logan discussed but it looks like just about everything is other so I'll just go ahead and go in order I think I know what it is but we'll see um it is three minutes max in our policy it does say we will allocate 45 minutes total we have 20 people to speak I'm inclined to try to allow everyone to speak but that will require us to strictly stick to the three minutes so anybody that has mid-sentence I'm going to be a bit of a stickler and we're done okay so you will get a timer up here you'll see it count down just please plan your comments I know it sometimes can be unnerving to be in front of a group it's friendly here okay but um try to stick to the three minutes I will I will cut you off um if points have been made so if you had a topic you want to speak on you feel like those have already been made it's okay to say hey I agree with so and so or or or summarize even more briefly if that's what you'd like to do okay um and of course always please conduct yourself professionally respectfully as we will treat you okay so with that I will go ahead and start at the top of the list uh with Toby Herron hello okay um hello my name is Toby Herron and my school board representative is Todd Grimes I live on Grove Parkway and we have a fifth grader in elementary school I'm here today to say thank you to this school board for offering special activities for students like my son on the recent back to school night I was delighted to learn that he had the chance to go on an overnight camping trip with his class to Youth Camp as part of that trip he will be offered information about drug prevention and he will also be given information about developmental assets his father and I are thrilled that he and his fifth grade class are given opportunities like this because they create a well-rounded education that include topics outside of the traditional disciplines of Reading Writing and arithmetic we know that because of a well-rounded education bcsd is preparing our son for the world he faces beyond the borders of bcsc and Beyond Bartholomew County if he chooses to live elsewhere as an adult we know that we live in a diverse and changing world and we know bcsc is preparing him to be successful no matter what path he chooses as I close I would like to also say thank you to the school board for offering me the chance to speak I would also like to remind those of us in attendance today that the act of us being here is a luxury that not every person can afford many people have to work second shift they don't have access to caregivers to provide a break so that they can show up or they can't physically tolerate setting here for hours and sometimes more than hours on end Gathering input shouldn't should not be a median endurance sport but instead should be an exercise that occurs both in public meetings but also through private Communications at its core this is part of what our elected officials are here for to gather our input as efficiently as possible I will continue to encourage both my representative Todd Grimes and now publicly the school board to continue accepting voices gathered outside of public meetings with an equal weight to those who appear before you because as a district we cannot fall into a trap of valuing those with the luxury of time more than those who cannot afford to attend that would be devastating to both our school system and our community thank you Miss Herron Mr markney Moeller I have a couple of comments about the goals of SEL and Cyd and the search Institute the partnering organizations there a couple of goals are to council students psychologically and to have closer personal relationships the problem is these goals are in direct conflict while the personal nature of psychotherapy will often make the patient want to have a personal relationship with the therapist it is not ethical for the therapist to comply the true therapist must not allow a personal relationship with the patient since they are unethical on several grounds in fact developing personal relationships with clients is pretty taboo across the professions and violates their code of ethics it is especially prohibited in Psychotherapy since it can be detrimental to the therapy so if public education is now trying to provide psychological counseling to students through their partnering organizations and programs there should be no personal relationships violating the most common professional code of ethics suggests an agenda that is not true therapy excuse me another reason this is a bad idea is because the teaching profession contains a high percent of pedophiles since pedophiles more often choose careers that put them in close contact with children School staffs naturally contain more pedophiles and sex offender stats prove it let's compare to Boy Scouts of America one of the institutions with an established high percent of pedophiles BSA had to deal with so many sex offense suits 92 000 they had to file bankruptcy from 75 to 84 231 Scout leaders were banned for sex abuse among 889 000 leaders that's 0.003 percent yet School educators are a higher category with an average of one sex offense per day among 3.2 3.2 million Public School teachers in the country the percent comes in at 0.01 percent and even if you want to include the entire body of Public School Employees around 8 million it comes in at 0.004 percent either way public education is higher than Boy Scouts of America suffice it to say that it can be easily established that public education contains a high percent of pedophiles so maybe closer personal relationships relationships between teachers and students is not the best plan maybe a better plan would be to keep Public public education on a strictly professional and academic basis and since I have more time apparently this high percent in schools is further evidenced by northside's hallway display called Spectrum which appears to have no educational purpose other than two profiles and notorious homosexual pedophiles thank you thank you Mr Neymar Miss Cheryl noblett before you start the clock I'd like to ask that all minors in the room for the next three minutes I'm going to read some adult rated material from the East Library uh yes I'm assuming minors would be here with parents and so that would be at the prayer discussion as a mother and a grandmother I am not happy to be standing up here but it is my civic duty to read some short selections from a book that's in the East Library the title is push the author is sapphire also known as Ramona Lofton catalog number eh 92633 this book is inappropriate for minors it should be removed from the library is based on a Diary of a child who was the victim of incest since infancy diary entries include direct accounts of molestations by the father the mother and the brother this book contains explicit sexual activities incest and infant molestation nudity excessive and frequent profanity racism drug use and extreme violence a quote from page 20.

so these are the taxes that we've already paid half of we'll be paying the other half of your suit and so on YouTube as a district we have four more years at this peak payment and then the payment begins to decline uh this first decline represents about 8.7 million dollars reduction in the bond Levy which translates to about 35 cents per 100 of eav now that the tax rate portion will vary depending on what eav growth does over the next four years but it should be somewhere in that ballpark then filed two years later by another 7.4 million dollar decline which translates to about 30 cents in equalized assessed value so I'm going to interject again and I'm gonna spoil the dreams of some future board of education but that means in four years right people can anticipate probably in theory suddenly they'll look at their property tax bill and go well it kind of decreased here and sorry fellow board members it has probably absolutely nothing to do with the Board of Education and everything to do with how much debt we have and how far it went down is that correct that is correct sorry future board [Laughter] that'll be I I know that's a point in time as taxpayers we've been looking forward to I know I've been paying taxes here for 21 years been looking forward to retiring a lot of this debt so that we can see our reduction at some point and oops and and I'm sorry then I'm going to interject to to your point Jared that only affects that portion of the tax bill that has to do with the school district yeah right because that's what that's correct although it is the majority of what they need yes I'm just saying it's not going to doesn't affect the operating side it affects the the true but I it only looks like one thing on your tax base exactly yeah I wish that they broke it out me too um yeah I I talked to the doctor to tell Gotti I'd like to see eventually what makes up those all the interest level payments all the principles where it's going by bond series um but uh because one of the things that and I'm sure it's just a lettering effect and that's I see that 10 million is going to come off the books you know in 2030 or whatever um but it's not a proportional thing it's because we have others that's kind of why I wanted to to see what makes it up for every year yeah I mean this is everything together but you're right it's made up of the nine Bond issues so together you know the bonds will be doing this reduction in the levy yeah I just um and we have that information by issue I can email that it would make it would make more sense okay and at 35 million yes so that type of change in The Debt Service oftentimes provides opportunities for the community for the board obviously the big things property tax reduction uh different school districts I work with that are in the situation that have been paying on a referendum bond that was for a specific purpose get to that point in time or that Levy's occurring and they also oftentimes don't look at other means that you the district may have because that may be a time to possibly consider addressing those needs one of the points of contention not contention but misunderstanding oftentimes in the community is is your dialogue between the two of you who's talking about you know on their tax bills it just says District 308 doesn't say operating doesn't say debt you know as a community member a lot of times people will see this graph and they think wow that's the year that the district can shift some of its resources back to the operating sites because you know as individuals if you pay down your car payment you can transfer that car payment to other portions of your individual household budget you don't have to ask your employer can I take that car payment and use on something else you just do it well in the case of a school district you can't just shift those dollars over yes you have to ask the voters for permission to use it for something else if they're if they're even inclined to allow that to happen yes two points on that and I'm really glad you said that one when when we talk about evidence-based formula and we talk about how Oswego is at the lowest out of all these districts that border us there's a lot of frustration from community members because they will say how can that be because 204 their tax bill isn't that far off or this District's not that far off or whatever but help me help right when we add the debt that's why those those tax um those tax bills are probably pretty close and why the state is saying there is more room it's just that you are using up so much of your room on debt am I incorrect no that is correct and I'm good and and my second follow-up question to that and I'm sorry to interrupt you I want to make sure we cover this is how much of our maintenance plan to make sure that we keep our you know uh parking lots paved our hvacs running have been because of what we've done with bonds because we don't have enough money in our maintenance fund yeah so in other words because our budget to keep things running at our 25 or around 25 facilities like we need we need students in a in a school that has an HVAC system a cooling unit we need we have all these parking lots and we have all these you know capital projects um how where's our fund at and how much of it relies on restructuring bonds yeah that's uh because I don't think people realize that and I think to take it out of out of sorts I'm working on the tentative budget now so to answer that question to maintain our buildings uh to maintain our buildings every year takes about six and a half to seven million dollars if we look at the uh proactive maintenance in our budget is about seven hundred thousand dollars when we've been cutting the budget we've been taking from maintenance facilities deferred maintenance so we are adding to that budget what the district has done prior to this is we've used some proceeds from the bond sales to address some of the major work but not on a year-to-year basis more on a big project a big project basis and then uh the second thing the district has done is since 2015 you'll see on the blue lines there that is our debt service extension what we're able to borrow in addition to our bond borrowing what we're able borrow for capital projects so we've been making do but you're right you know what seven million dollars a year for projects versus a 700 000 budget it's uh it's really been putting out a lot of fires and keeping things going so Bill his predecessors have done a great job in that we're looking forward to building that operational budget up and and really funding those capital projects moving forward and it seems like a lot of times we have this list of things we know we need to do but something becomes crisis so we have to then go and you know attack that project and deal with it because we have to make sure that our students and our staff are safe and in a you know comfortable environment and so it often puts aside the things that we would love to do like build more parking lots like you know make sure the insides of our buildings look as new and fresh and amazing and make sure our Landscaping is gorgeous and like all of that stuff is stuff we want to do but at the same time we have to do some things and and I really appreciate the board talking about that it gives us an opportunity to just remind the community as well that our our building Engineers our custodians our central office maintenance staff they do a phenomenal job making the facades look great yeah but our buildings are 20 years old 20 years old is that age where things start to fail and we need to address them and so those operational dollars are even more critical now because for every one thing we don't do it's not well we can get by it's it's at its end of life and we really need to support that financially to keep the buildings running and functioning the way they should so the buildings that were purchased by with this are 20 years old the building we ever bought with this these dollars plenty that are older so it's nice to retire the debt but then when you retire the debt you also have that ongoing maintenance cost s so on this slide there's a whole other presentation so we're not I don't mean to go to a deep deep big deep or deep detail here but just to know that when school districts are in this situation where their their debt levies have been a significant decline there are options including the property tax reduction which you know could be some of it but then there's option to address Capital needs either through additional bonds or more permanent funding like an operating rate increase which is where you would increase the limiting rate you know by translating some of that tax rate into additional operating rate we actually have a new option that just was signed by the governor because this limiting rate increase for tax rate purposes can be a little cumbersome in implementing and because when you ask the question as a board sometimes you have to predict two years worth of equalizes value for it actually hits the tax bills so oftentimes you end up having an erroneous prediction because you don't know what eav is going to be over a two-year period so the property tax extension increases new option where you actually ask for a dollar amount increase uh easier to explain and to control I wish it went one step further in this new bill because the language still doesn't allow you to say in it you know we're asking for amount of X but by the way our bond Levy's Falling by one and a half X at the same time so you still have to communicate to the public the difference but hey you still have four years working with the law your attorney in the very School lobbyists try to get that bill fixed a little bit more so a voter walking through the box has all the information they need to make an important but that was my opinion a step in the right direction of fixing the problem that was in the limiting rate increase question any further questions or comments here on comments on this portion of the presentation um so when we call the bonds um how long before we can reissue bonds or can you because this one did we turned this over this last set pretty quick right or this this one here Oh you mean the the 2013.

so what we've been up to so we've been we've met with all the principals most of the administrative staff are all the administrative staff we're in the process of compiling all that information we've put together individual reports for each facility and reviewed those with each principle and the administrative groups separately so we're in the process now of sharing that with Emily and but it is clear so back in 2018 during the original study the middle school was that the top priority at the time what number one being the the really had a secure entry right so that needs to be addressed there's also some Ada issues that we do enter the secure entry that has been created you have to climb those standard students in the main office and the main offices it was just great challenges that uh you don't have a relative facilities right now so it was clear that that was at the top of the priority list and so we've we've been driving that forward kind of in parallel with the rest of the study to uh to help you all make some decisions also part of the priority list at the time at the middle school the HVAC has not been addressed there for quite some time so it's due for a complete replacement and so that's what you'll see here we have to two different Scopes here one being addressing the main office so this proposed plan we reviewed with Emily and uh steal them principal at the middle school um talking about originally back in 2018 we were looking at relocating the office to what is now the art room and we were going to move the main entry to that to that second door rather than where it is now talking to Gavin you know the challenge with that solution is all the kids are on the other end of the building 90 of the day there's a few classes on this on the same closest to the high school so this particular budget looks at capturing three classrooms across the hall from the current office we would create a new entry above the retaining wall so there's a retaining wall and then you have that green space between uh between the retaining wall and the fire station right um you also have the the only handicap part who is out on the street right there and so you park and you have to back out into the city street to leave so the current plan and it's very it's preliminary at this point but the current plan is that we would create a small visitor parking lot in that green space provide the adequate number of handicap spots for the school as I said create a new entry door that would have a secure entry Arrangement similar to the high school here where you're directed through the office we would also move all the administrative staff in the clinic all to the front in those three classrooms and then we would uh so we'll be losing three classrooms so we create two general classrooms in the current office and athletic space and then we would also create another class for them on the south and next to the stem uh there's a couple of there's a couple of classrooms there and then the old memories I believe so yeah so we're going to capture some of that space created that third classroom so you won't be losing a number of classrooms so that that's the uh that's the correct plan and that's a plan I'm sorry so where's the office I do oh and I was going to say do you have this uh on paper thank you because it's hard to read up there so much better yeah so this is the classroom so this is um two three and four right or a year current rooms where you're putting me on whatever and then move five is still there perfect okay okay yeah so two three and four and then five it would remain um we can create a new entry probably on this end we talked uh with staff about creating public space in the office and then having them internal space for you know just keep that separation because right now visitors come in into the office and students are in the same space and it's very congested so we talked about creating two different entrances uh into the into the school one being on the North End or Administration and that students can enter and then the nearest upstairs for me the stairs there's no way to because as soon as we touch them the ramp has to be a certain yeah there's just not enough space there to halfway down the hallway exactly well you know how long the Rams are on this end of the building that you have to take down maybe around so I think just for every one inch exactly we will do the best we can here okay so originally you know we were going to capture the art room here that's gonna stay now and this entrance will remain the same and then we were actually going to have the principal assistant principal in the conference room back here in this space but I think this will now become the third classroom and then we we also discussed potentially creating a break room and you know there's some other options again it's very it's preliminary at this point but that's the current plan that we're moving towards it is but you would just redo it yeah it's still set up for home yeah there's some question about whether this wall is in the right location we might have to shift the separation wall between the two spaces so we'll have to investigate that further and the big space to the left then is correct now that it's a secure vest up there that was carryover oh I just I grabbed the floor plan from the last project so this would actually it would remain as kids and that was just a carry over right what's playing for my last our previous claims yeah I think originally they had talked about 2018 of moving the principal's office those offices down in that area so they wanted that to be a secure entrance but it makes much more sense for the office to be up in the heart of the building well I agree with that but I guess I'm questioning what what you do with that door like how do you make that floor secure because currently that's the question yes so if you think about drop kids off I mean they're going to have the doors unlocked or that door is going to be landed arrive on this muscle only then it serves as the purpose of any other door around the building at any other time it doesn't need that second um protective area okay and then what happens with where we currently have to enter happens to that in it yeah so that would that's a good question because there is some extra space there now we've created that vestibule it would become a general entrance that would be locked during the day and then you can discuss whether that becomes the bus entrance [Music] essentially would not be used as a public interest but we're not we wouldn't change the bus arrangement buses would still come down below in the loop yes you're not going to bring the loop up to that other entrance right no no no no with the retaining wall it would really be challenged to do that okay just because the site is the slope of the site is to change it's so serious it's uh yeah some challenges so this is just a general schematic of what that would look like so right now you can see that we just overlaid this over a good old photo and the handicap spots out here on the stream we would just create an entrance here and move those handicap spots and then create an entry into classroom too I believe so that everything on this loop on the current limit would remain the same but it would free up some spots potentially with visitors coming in so I envisioned that when you made that little parking space area that might actually be a loop up into the upper parking lot um I yeah I don't I don't know where the property line is here um and there are some elevation changes but that's something we could investigate that but this was this is a concept that yeah you wanted to present but we certainly could investigate tying these two together and making this a bit of a pull through is that what you were thinking that's what I was thinking that if you could it's very right here there's an elevation change we did we met yeah I mean we've had several meetings and looked at a lot of different scenarios of what to do and this is what we propose to perform ance of the best meet the needs of the middle school we talked about changing the um the car rider liner making changes to the and where the buses come in we talked about if we did use that lot then we traffic would build up on Main Street we don't want traffic to build up on Main Street um I think this way leaves us with the most opportunity um fix this part but also leave an opportunity where the buses drop off right now we decided to do something yeah I'm here to address that situation further face but this eliminates the need for Visible parking in your current law which is a long way from the door it is yes that's a steep rate that's right I know it also needs to anything so that's the current plan is that you have any other questions and then of course the second part is the HKC which was at the top of the list in 2018 you did that's good that's right it's a lot of big stuff any questions the um going back to the classrooms on the interior um um is there a way to provide some kind of light in the interior rooms because the current interior rooms are I mean they feel I don't know I'm just thinking is there a way to even have put those out hallway or something that that allows them like so as you think about it on some daylighting because I I taught I taught everyone a lot and it's just it I didn't I didn't teach there all day but I had so I had taught other other hours in the in a room with Windows and it has a different feeling it does Department and there's also a bathroom there where you actually several bathrooms staff restrooms that make money yes we're planning on moving though we would move those to the front to the new office space all right thank you thank you so much thank you you're more than welcome to take the entire board meeting but I also understand if you have other pressing matters I will capture any other questions or anything that comes up thank you for your time thank you so much I appreciate your time thank you all right next is discussion and number six is approval of the that came when we figured that piece out we figured out that we can't technically pay Diane if her hired date wasn't until August 7th so that's why we're amending the higher date and then we are thank you um I'll show you that I went on Friday to Indianapolis for the Indiana State Board Association legislative committee um so two people from each region in the state meet people and we help determine what the legislative priorities will be for isba um in the next session and we will we work on a draft for about the next month and try and get the wording right but as we're there all together as a group we've made those decisions and I'm very excited to say that my priority is now at the top of this which is changing my friends and language uh that is going to be one of our top priorities this year and everybody was on board with it um one legislator that we need to come to our side and I think it will happen so anyway that's something I've been advocating for all of the past year and I feel like it's finally gotten the moment of attention that people need um I don't know if it will help us in 2024 because of the timing but um I think that you know helping everybody oh yeah you there's a six month window well I guess what I'm wondering is is there a risk in calling them and then and them having to pay a higher interest rate no one once the box so it's sort of like when you tell the mortgage broker lock my rate even so that's what happens yeah that's what happens okay okay so when the bonds are sold the new rate is locked okay okay is that it uh almost done yeah I'm not gonna go through every Pink Box on here I know we're also asked to provide some more information the various participants in a bong issue for those of us that are visual Learners thank you so you know the issuance of municipal bonds isn't quite like what we have when you go to the bank and deal with your your highly regulated industry because when you are selling your bonds you're selling potential investors which might be um funds that we hold as individuals so you got to make very good and proper disclosure so it's highly regulated by the SEC msrb IRS even and the various those various roles that are involved that you have the attorneys you know that work for a variety of different purposes some on behalf of the district and the transaction some on the behalf of your potential investors on the transaction you know if you're buying your bonds you want to know if they're issued legally and they're going to be tax exempt so you want to if you're an investor you want an opinion from a reputable Bond PMA is active statistics Municipal visors since 2006.

so I'm going to read a couple excerpts here he reached his hand down and pulled out my dick he quickly went to giving me head I just sat back and enjoyed it as I could tell he was too it was also definitely experienced in what he was doing because he went to work quite confidently uh he then came up and asked me if I wanted to try and I said sure another portion says only thing I knew about anal sex previously was that it was painful or at least played up as such on cameras nervous and drunk I listened and I got on top of my stuff he got on top of my stomach and uh he got on top slowly inserted himself into me it was the worst pain I think I had ever felt in my life he then added more lube and tried again which felt better but not by much he began the stroking motion eventually I felt a mix of Pleasure and Pain um so as an adult I find this very graphic and not appropriate it's quite embarrassing to read not appropriate for a child to read but according to the Ala it is okay for a 12 year old to read because they are considered a young adult I'd like to ask would you let your 12 year old son or daughter watch a movie depicting such Acts now remember the Ala says 12 to 18 is considered young adults now when I visit the leading Health Institute the nlm National Library of Medicine under the NIH National Institute of Health the state of a young adult according to them are the ages between 18 and 26.

6 and it's Municipal advisor we have a fiduciary duty that's the highest standard in the regulatory regime set up in the municipal Bond industry it means we have to look out for your interests before our own or anyone else's you have the underwriter that the underwriter is very important because typically it's the highest fee of the transaction also they're the ones that are going out and selling the bonds that determines the interest rate on the bonds so um the underwriter is determined um or the purchaser is determined through a variety of different methods of sale which I'll cover briefly on the next slide here these these two roles here are relatively minor they've been held by Amalgamated Bank since 90 s this role here they're basically sending in your invoices to pay your bonds escrow agent is when they hold proceeds of a bond to shoot to pay off retire on another Bond and Moody's or s p i have another slide here in a second that's a rating she's such a credit bureaus that we deal with as individuals let's hear people want to loan you what your credit Worthy is the rate agency provides an opinion on your credit worthiness there's some news here that happened recently or another AMC Fitch just downgrade the United States government from Triple A to double A Plus that created some headaches last week in the markets and then lastly you have in some cases credit enhancers which help you get a better rating um in a in the better rating that you give exchange for fees and you only use that if you're going to get lower interest rate it's kind of like a letter of credit somebody may be familiar with familiar with that um methods of sale if we do public offering that is a term that John mentioned um you have negotiated sales that's oftentimes what's been utilized on your bond sales it's typically appropriate for uh entities with a lower rating or with a lot of debt which obviously you uh the debt perspective you've qualified from that there's specific recommendations by the government Finance Officers Association when when you specific method of sale competitive sales are used more often for highly rated entities the double a mid double A or higher and a direct placement is where we bypass the public market go right to a purchaser that's only utilized typically for smaller or shorter financing financing only be out for a few months like your tax anticipation warrants those have been purchased directly through a bidding process but oftentimes those have been bought by other units of government like Township Treasures Plainfield schools bought your last tax anticipation warrant for eight million dollars on the last slide here I think and there's appendix I'm not going to go through appendix that's more if for people want more information than what's in the body but Credit Agencies you know sport agencies uh the two primary ones that are used for local issuers such as yourself are Moonies and s p typically they're selected based off who we think will provide the highest rating at one point the district did have an s p rating at that time was lower than Moody's so we only used it that one time and then allowed and didn't use it again when the district framed to some credit problems it's rating Bell from a double a two down to an A2 most recently you were upgrade back to A1 because you're on the right path um building up fund balance so we should hopefully see that come back up to double a two over the next couple years if you continue on that path and then for larger Bond issues you do have a double A minus rating from Fitch services but we only use that on the large financing so the ones that were like 80 90 million dollars any other questions on the process about selling bonds I know that's kind of a try to make it a 30 000 foot view if you have other questions um I'd be more than happy either answer now or via email no I saw that the the last uh the last one came in a little bit better than presented so nothing but confidence thank you thank you thank you both yes hey 9.1 are action items um 9.1 approval of bills for payment can I have a motion please make a motion to authorize the payment of bills and the amount of 10 million 700 13 and 50 cents as presented second um I'll I'll speak to this I was I was asked to kind of um explain my vote kind of ahead of time so I will long before I became a board member um I've explained this before my my family goes back pretty far in this area and long before I became a board member I I have family members who have been rolling Fields all over schools all around here and so um I always look for when they pop up when they're utilized this was done before I came onto the board when I first came on the board I noticed and so anytime you hear me abstain it's because I see people that are my family who have been contacted by the schools to do business and I don't think it's appropriate to vote one way or the other so just wanted to take the time to kind of educate I'm sure someone will ask a question and that's the answer to that question I can tell you if you go back you'll find that they did this long before me and I usually don't have any knowledge as to whether it's going on unless my uncle as the nickname red actually gives a conversation and tells me but usually doesn't come up so okay Miss venmuth I Dr Maria aye Mr Cerrone aye and that a child is at the ages of one through twelve ala says a young adult is 12. so there's clearly a difference between a Library Association and uh and a Health Institute of what a young adult is and to that point I would suggest a better process of properly vetting these types of books before they get into the school libraries and into the hands of students that are too young to read them thank you chucked out tucked out thank you for the opportunity to speak I want to address myself to the doctor who gave the evaluations on the teachers uh being mindful that I'm sure all of those criteria mean something to you all all of this the facilities the administrators the employees of Bartholomew County School System ultimately designed to teach and produce good students and I was saddened here that the grade grades and test scores were not no longer considered in the evaluation of our teachers thank you thank you Mr doc Lori Thompson good evening I'm Lori Thompson and I live here in Columbus I'm coming here to share some good news so I'm hopeful that this will ring resonate with some of you I'm with a group called path to success and our primary focus is supporting youth in this community primarily black and biracial youth this summer we had a stem camp that we held out at Advanced manufacturing center um and within two weeks of the registration we had two students for everyone's space that we had you know a good problem to have so immediately I contacted my friends at bcsc ifically Mr hack who connected me with Davina Harden Davina Harden and we were able to work it out such that several of the students instead of coming to our camp because we didn't have space we were able to refer to her and we were just delighted for that partnership to be able to do that one of the reasons we do this is because I don't feel that the black and by Russian youth in this community are as engaged as they could be experiencing all that they can experience the good news is that just this afternoon we were informed that two of the girls who was in that camp went to their school and asked to be on their robotics team so I'll call that I'll call that two starfish um the second thing I want to talk to you about is is um is the support that we received from both Charles Edwards and Dr boseman's team to help us with Transportation there's a program up in Indianapolis called the center for leadership development that they were able to support us on if they we had not had that support some of the students would not have been able to participate so I wanted to read for you a statement from one of the students who graduated in May that was able to attend that program he says I did not want to take part of this program when my mother told me about the program I begged her not to enroll me I had no doubt the leaders of the program and the program itself was great but I did not think it was for me because after all I knew I knew it all I was wrong the program was what I needed I must admit the first two weeks were challenging my instructor disciplined me and for forgetting my books later I matured and I found out the program really helped me I no longer sit in the back of the class I've invested more time in preparing myself and I now believe that I could be a great college student thank you Mr Grow good evening Eric grow I'm a bcsc parent I helped run the grow strong schools community group and I'm here with the Bartholomew County chapter of parents rights and education concerns of inappropriate content in our school libraries were brought to this body starting nearly two years ago parents came together and started combing catalogs examples were brought to these meetings sent in emails had in conversations but the issue was never addressed by the border admin we've since been compiling a running list of books with reviews ratings and locations within bcsc libraries some of the books on this list are fine but others are so bad it's abusive for an institution of authority to put them in front of kids some for hobbies pornographic content drawn out descriptive sex acts rape violence self-harm suicide normalizing abortion sensationalizing drugs and profanity that would make a sailor blush for example the book All American boys contains the word 39 times 79 times and was found in an elementary school the little black book for girls is a non-fiction that gives kids sexual instruction condones promiscuity gives tips on how to improve explains fisting and among many other things that clearly shouldn't be in our schools there are dozens maybe hundreds of inappropriate books and that's just what we've found we have to address that the issue around content in our libraries is bigger than just a book or two that slipped in by accident in our work we noticed inappropriate books have been disappearing from school catalogs while we are happy to see some of them go this raises more foundational concerns concerns of transparency in Candor many questions immediately pop up that our community should know what books were in our libraries and why were they taken out what criteria is being used to make the decision why is this being done quietly without addressing the issue there are many in our community that will object to this and we object too doing it the right way is more important while we get attacked as book banners it seems bcsc is more deserving of that label issues shouldn't be swept under the rug and not working through this has the potential to further fuel division amongst our community your community leaders this is not the transparency we've been asking for for the beginning and it's not the transparency that many of you sitting at that table have advocated for there was a restructuring of the board we tried to show some Grace by dropping this while everyone settled in but it's been two years it's two years tonight we ask for this issue to be addressed properly a place for Community discussion with the board like the community work sessions or subcommittee forums we've hosted in the past there's simply too much content too many points to be made too much discussion to work through all sides need to be heard we need to at least attempt to sow unity and deliberate to come up with our best ideas and solutions so please start the conversation tonight on how we can at least begin to address the issue thank you Mary Mills [Music] Mary Mills foreign my children it's been a while since they graduated but they both received an excellent education and Foundation to succeed in their lives in this school district and I am so grateful to the teachers they had that encouraged them that taught them to think and reason because those are the things that help them succeed in life and the lady that talked about the stem program I have a child who is an assistant professor at the University of Missouri has their own research lab and loves what she is doing my other child who it took a while for it all to kick in he is very successful as a broadcast engineer with NBC Universal and loves his work and has finally figured out that he wants to learn for the rest of his life I can only thank the teachers that my children had here and those that encourage them along the way and I never once questioned the curriculum or what books were in the library and I think they both made wise decisions on those things I think those decisions need to be left to those who are the experts in those areas thank you Pat McClendon good evening and thank you for the opportunity I'm here to thank bcsc the board and um especially Richard's School where I do some work with them on diversity and um I want to state that I am an American citizen of African ancestry that is really important to note because I didn't say I'm an African-American I said I'm an American of African ancestry for those of you that don't know that's inclusive language and that's what's being taught at Richards they're working really hard and at bcsc they're working you guys are working really hard to live up to the core values of diversity Equity inclusion educating the Educators so that they have the right resources and tools in training to do what they need to do it's important to me because I grew up in a town similar to Columbus 30 miles east of Cincinnati and I was the only person of color in the class and in my fifth grade class the day that they taught about American history and slavery my teacher Miss Thompson stood up and said turn to this page look at the picture on the page the picture on the page was a black and white picture and that picture was of black people in a field with a white cotton socks for picking cotton and they were picking cotton and she added for the lesson for the day and I quote black people in America were slaves they were uneducated poor and didn't have the right to vote that was it and then she told us to look at the picture after the class one of my classmates said you're a slave and then he said the n-word that day I didn't have any way to respond to him I didn't have the words my teacher didn't have the words to teach it appropriately had I had the words had the teacher known how to teach the class maybe Arvin who's been in my brain for 59 years would never have said those words to me so I applaud bcsc I want you to keep doing the work I will stand up here and I will stand beside you and I'll keep talking about it and I'll keep volunteering at schools as much as you need because it's a global Workforce thank you Jason Tracy yeah Jason Tracy gotta get my mom voice out a little bit sorry I'll work on that uh okay my name's uh Jason Tracy live at 2800 Braeburn here in Columbus talking about inclusivity and book bands um my career is in information technology I am about 24 years ago got my start at St Peter's and then later went to Goodwill and one of the things I had to do is run internet filters and so I'm very aware of how futile some of the discussions about book bands are when 24 years ago we saw that as one of the founders of the internet pointed out the net sees censorship as damage and routes around it books get into North Korea books are going to get into the home books will get into the school parents will sometimes disagree on what's appropriate and what's not um so the the books that are there matter less than how the people how the children in the school feel how welcomed they feel how seen they are um one of the the hard things that I'm sure every parent has gone through is is the realization that you can't protect your children from the things in the world that you see is awful and for some parents those are those are words and some sometimes it's hate and it's it's disdain for who someone really is and the actions that we take as adults to say this is disgusting or these experiences or these lies are wrong or it shouldn't even be seen speak a lot more about who we value who is acceptable in society and who is worth less one of the tistics that that really disturbs me more than some of the words I heard lgbtq youth or three and a half times as likely to commit suicide three and a half times as likely to commit suicide as non-lgbtq youth another statistic coming from the Trevor Project revealed that 21 percent one in five African-American lgbtq youth has attempted suicide in 2021.

I'm thankful that my daughters went to bcic I'm thankful that one of my daughters who is gay survived and I am thankful for the people I see here that are going to make sure that the kids are there now also survive thank you foreign I'm very sorry I'm going to get this wrong I believe it's surely Lopez does that sound close oh my goodness Miss trap I'm gonna talk to your son about this handwriting hello my name is Shirley trap thank you my name is Shirley Trapp I live at 1070 West Lake Hills Drive uh I am a past 40-year plus teacher in the bcsc system I would like to thank Dr Roberts and the school board members for the time the energy the commitment and the dedication that you put forth in making decisions for the educational social physical and emotional growth of all students in the bcsc system I would like to thank you for your working together as board members with no hidden agendas no Ontario motives and not affected by special groups thank you for putting all students first with no limitations for the students uniqueness I hope that your decisions are made with the consideration for all children's education is in your hands but our future is in their hands that's the old African property I know that you value and know that our teachers teach every day with the knowledge of their subjects the love in their heart for their professions and the commitment to do the best for all students they know their academic subjects they know how important it is for kids to learn to agree to disagree they watch kids learn to accept and respect differences of their peers teachers provide the tools with which students build their Futures about the 752 teachers that we have in our system in the 408 AIDS I would like to thank you for putting all students first for knowing that academic learning is part of an integral development of children which respect cooperation seeking first to understand then be understood and empathy are the tools that take education to the to the successful level now have this quotational poem or whatever you would like to call it for Mother Teresa people are often unreasonable illogical and self-centered love them anyway if you do good for people if you do good people will accuse you of ulterior motives do good anyway if you are honest people will will May cheat you be honest anyway if you find happiness people may be jealous be happy anyway good you do today will be forgotten tomorrow do it anyway and give the world the best you have and you'll be kicked in the teeth give your best anyway for you see in the end is between you and God and it was never between you and them anyway I'd like to thank you for allowing me to speak I'd like to thank you for the success and the work that you're going to do next year in 23-22 and I like to say what Henry Ford say is that coming together is the beginning staying together is progress but working together is success thank you guys Joy Lawler I'm Joy Lawler I live on in on Crescent Drive in the Parkside area of Columbus and I thank you for this opportunity to speak as a point of clarification Harvey Milk was not a pedophile he was gay and he lost his life for it pedophilia is much more common among heterosexuals and the stats for Evangelical Christians are abysmal and extremely high I am a survivor of severe child sexual abuse when I was a child nobody talked about this ever I thought I was the only one and I was completely alone and very damaged what are we Sheltering our kids from do we think that if we don't tell them about the stuff they're not going to know about it or it's not going to happen to them books are designed to help them deal with the very difficult world that we have handed them handed to them you can't turn a person gay you can't turn a person trans but you can make them feel alone and abandoned please hear from a kid like I was if only one person had noticed my despair it could have saved me years of recovery Richard Safford hello I live in the park Parkside area I have three grandchildren who attend school here and first of all I want to say thank you the work that you do for these children is phenomenal I am as bout as vanilla as you can get I am an old white man I am middle class I'm a retired pastor and retired psychiatric social worker my father who was a very conservative Southern Baptist preacher never censored one page that I ever read I never censored anything that my children ever read we all made it pretty good the thing was I was raised in extremely racist homophobic homotrans part of this country it was only in the ability to read and a large diverse set of literature that I was able to realize just how destructive my culture was to parents who are concerned about the books that their children may check out and read my answer is work with your kids know what your kids are reading if you were very opposed to a book don't let them read it but that does not give other parents who seek parental rights the right to tell my children what they can allow their children to read and have access to and the fact of the matter is if it's not in libraries they will not probably have access to it as as children we as adults we have Amazon I also want to thank you for the way your administrators to teachers counselors the whole nine yards work with individual children in this school I know several children in the school who are lgbtq and they have respect I know children who are trans and the teachers don't dead name them they call them by their appropriate pronouns they are giving great respect and the ability to know that they are loved thank you keep up the good work Sunny Courier hi I'm Sunny Currier children are out of the house now but have gone through bcsc um I'm here to say first that I grew up in a very sort of um exclusive School District in the Chicago suburbs 97 percent of my graduating class went to College academic Excellence was dressed and that seemed very natural to me when we ended up living in the middle of rural Indiana and I had to send my child to school I was really scared I wondered what kind of an education she would get in the middle of what felt like nowhere if you're from Chicago um I was so thrilled from kindergarten through 12th grade I was impressed with the Excellence of her teachers the Excellence of the school corporation the Excellence of the curriculum the opportunities that she had to learn and to grow and so I first want to just thank this school corporation for being amazing and exceeding my expectations and for all the teachers who took a personal interest in my child and helped her to grow um so I wanted to say thank you for that um I'm kind of floored by what I've heard here tonight um as someone who has spent most of her career as a therapist for youth I would like to say that I have seen every day children dealing with rape with suicide with drugs with incest with all the issues that have come up here in this meeting and been discussed um and have needed to find ways to navigate those things those are things that happen to kids every day and in every classroom in bcsc there's one kid who's dealing with one of those things um what we need to be doing is attacking ways of overcoming those things ways of supporting kids that are dealing with those things and worry less about what's in the in the books that they might be reading those things happen kids need a way to learn how to deal with those things and books are one way that that can happen if people are concerned with what their kids are reading then they supervise that and they have the option to limit what their kids read other people's kids maybe need those things and I applaud the Librarians the teachers and want to just say that you all have my full trust and admiration thank you pastor taiki I have to say that okay I know it's Mark taiki but it's nice to know I'm not the only Pastor here tonight so welcome I came prepared to share some thoughts uh but having heard from Mrs McClendon and Mrs Trapp I really don't have anything to improve upon on the basis of what they said what I wanted to share was basically in line with what they had to share with us tonight I appreciate their comments they stand behind their comments I stand with them and I'm very appreciative of what our schools are doing in light of what they've talked about so thank you very much Donna White thank you Eric touched on this uh book the little black book for girls I wanted to read some acts of assignment what is a when you give head to a guy you may lick his penis and balls you may want to suck on his penis and use your hand on the shaft that has the penis is very sensitive and good area to play with pressure of your tongue slowing down and speeding up your hand will also help him orgasm at no point do you have to swallow the it goes on this and the same is offered for oral sex for women in our course there are a lot of ways to have sex 69ing cyber sex fingering fondling groping grinding handjobbing kissing making out massaging going down on each other petting phone sex it also includes and explains fisting buddy and Remy masturbation my mom said I touched myself as soon as I could reach with an illustration of the nude woman masturbating the illustration on the bottom of the page despects an abstract image of a nude woman leaning back her breast is exposed and her left hand is reaching toward a pastor for hair between her thighs masturbation is an important part of developing your sexuality as children touching and playing with their body and vagina is normal knowing how to give ourselves sexual pleasure brings us freedom find a quiet place where you can be by yourself rub your body with cream or oil or something that feels good explore your body touch yourself in different ways if you want think about people in the situations that turn on you there are many different ways you can masturbate by rubbing a Contours with wet fingers for example try different positions for Speed some women cross their legs and the muscles around you put pressure on the entire vagina and labia Others May insert something into their vagina such as a finger or dildo some women rub their breasts some use a pillow between their legs or a shower massage before you have sex try having lots of foreplay make out touch each other get your partner to eat you out or masturbate this will help you relax make you wetter and bring you closer to achieving an orgasm well have these sacks don't forget about the find a position where it's easy for your partner to touch your and during sex like women on top I went to school here in Columbus all my life and moved to Virginia the second semester of my senior year never once was in a book like this in any of the schools and by the way as you um eggy Harvey Milk age 23 had sexual relations with a 15 year old boy [Music] Kristen Munn I feel like I feel like my comments are going to be a little boring after that um I'm Kristen mine my address is on file I'm a professional a community volunteer but my most important job is I'm a mom I have two kids in bcsc my son is a sixth grader and he attends CSA Lincoln he'll indulge me I'm going to speak personally for a moment my son was diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder in the third grade and since that time we've been on somewhat of a roller coaster with doctors counselors and mental health professionals to ensure that he has the support and resources he needs to learn and grow as part of his diagnosis he's experienced a debilitating anxiety at times as a family we're fortunate to have resources and a support system to help him outside of school but we are Beyond grateful for the support we've received within bcsc I can tell you firsthand that a child who's suffering from anxiety for any reason will struggle to learn their multiplication tables or parts of a sentence if they're able to at all despite the challenges that we've faced I have no doubt that my son is receiving a quality education and I'm grateful for the social emotional supports that he receives at school that are absolutely critical to his development these supports and a focus on his assets rather than his deficiencies have put him on the path to success I consider our principal Brett Finley his teachers this past year Delaney George his school counselor Alicia Thompson to be part of our team I know that they care about my child and are invested in his success academically and personally I share this very personal aspect of my family to exemplify my first hand belief that success in life and success in academics is more than Reading Writing and arithmetic I'm thankful to everyone at bcsc for their dedication to children to seeing them succeed and for the many ways they support my child and all our children each and every day from attending past school board meetings and reading some of the news that we see I've heard a lot of negative comments shared concerns theories about different things that are going to negatively impact our children and I wanted to be sure to take this time to acknowledge the positives that I see every single day in our schools and the difference it's making for the lives of our students including my son thank you Peyton emberton uh hello to everyone my name is Peyton emmerton today I not only do I want to talk to the school board I want to talk to everyone that came here today so perspective I've not heard anyone talked about today I am a gay genderqueer person um and oh I'm a little nervous to talk um the topics that the parents are concerned about um in these books masturbation incest murder all sorts of human brutality I did not learn through books I learned through the harshness of real life and um it's really hard knowing you know all this hate is in the world and I just you're doing great being called accusatory names like child groomer a pedophile at the end of the day I know who I am I'm not a groomer or a pedophile I am an expression of biodiversity in the image of God and creation I I was told growing up I was made in God's image and God maybe this way I didn't choose this for myself I didn't want this for myself for a long time I grew up in a straight Evangelical environment and I hated myself for so long and it wasn't until I got exposure to Media talking about queer issues that I finally began the process of accepting myself for who I am media talking about queer issues and the issues of our people is healing we deserve to know our history and what our ancestors went through to get us to this point the courage they had and just please keep these books talking about issues like these on the book shows queer people especially queer children like you deserve the knowledge of our people and not to feel like we're a menace to society okay um I've not done this before but I'm gonna give us a 10 minute break okay so I think I think that would be good for all of us all right I'm going to ask everybody to come back at 8 25 please thank you we need to do we need to add any do we need a gavel out or something Mike okay thank you [Laughter] foreign [Music] [Laughter] testing all right okay fantastic I found myself all right now [Laughter] thank you okay I think that is the conclusion of our 10 minute recess I can ask everybody to get their seats for me please thank you conversation can continue if you could just do it in the hallway or outside that's fine all right we will move on to the how part of the agenda today so again we've we switched up the way our agenda will alert look and so there is um consent agenda for approval of old business and then of new business what you're looking at is old business here Dr Roberts if you wouldn't mind taking us through this I sure will thanks Mrs Wilden and uh Mr Grimes another was on the school board agenda committee Jason whoever um correct us if we haven't quite got the agenda right but I think we've reordered this appropriately in terms of old business versus new business whisper with request for approval that was one of the items in that those recommendations for old business I would like to recommend your approval of the minutes of the regular school board meeting from July 17th that was our last regular one the Public Works session where we talked about policies on July 17th in the strategic planning session where we talked about facilities on July 31st additionally I would like to request approval of policy 32 20.01 a revision to the teacher appreciation Grant or tag policy Dr pleek brought that information to you uh last meeting and that is a policy that we have to approve and then submit to the Indiana Department of Education policy 6320 also a revision a purchase which that policies name or is called purchasing Dr Phillips brought a recommendation to you that was based upon some changes in legislation that gives us some more flexibility through the purchasing process so asking for your approval of those three items under old business take that back is that well you had indeed that is correct okay thank you yeah forwarding through uh volume 35 number one would be old business because it's something we looked at a couple of times thank you so on this one just a reminder in terms of um we had a volume of policies we have taken some of those out not asking for approval yet because there were still some conversations going on with some of those policies and we just had not gotten those revisions done in a timely enough manner for you to have time to review those and bring them back so in this group of policies we have I'm just going to go by the the uh title oath and then the next three or personal background checks references and mandatory reporting of convictions and substantiated child abuse and arrests there are three of those policies because that should be 41-21 that third one there because we have three different chapters three different groups of employees that that pertains to we have interscholastic Athletics we have a grievous procedure for violation of state law limiting participation of transgender girls and Athletics that was a state statute or code thing that was adopted last year driver education programs for highability students adjunct teachers and then also public hearing before commencement of collective bargaining and public meeting before ratification of tentative agreement those are requirements by Indiana code supplemental payments for teachers required ADM accounts for the purpose of State funding and verification of residency for membership travel payment and reimbursement volunteers personal background check contracted Services volunteers and personal background checks kind of tie back into those those background checks we have to do for people who are tied to the school in one way or another school calendar school day and transportation and then just talking back over Mr Schultz and I were having that conversation it is possible I believe to to consider um went the wrong way here but to consider the two policies that were covered under the public engagement subcommittee as old business if this board is ready to to approve those so I'm going to add those to it and if if you'd like to pull that out go make that motion to do so or just ask that they be pulled out but it seems like there actually has been enough Dialogue on those two tying it back to the school board agenda subcommittee work as well as the policy discussion you had in the other public meetings so I would I would include those two that we referenced earlier in this group of policies okay so do I have a motion from the board regarding old business items a through d I move that we approve the old business as presented by Dr Roberts with the addition of the policy in regards to public engagement in meetings all right second I think you have a first and second open for discussion Clarity on the motion that includes the changes in the bylaws process as well correct both policies not just the public participation correct okay any other discussion or questions okay so all those in favor of the Motions real quick I did have some questions I did talk to Dr Roberts I know you had asked me if I had questions earlier I did have questions I did get those answered I will put together a list of the two or three things that we talked about adding into administrative guidelines which are separate from the policy so I just want to make sure that that's noted yeah thanks very clarification Mr major our dialogue was around the practices and we thought those could be included in the administrative guidelines thank you thank you so I don't know if this is appropriate can I ask one question yeah of course you can that um I am not sure the answer so I guess it's a good question to ask in regards to the policy um 8210 school calendar and it says that when we have virtual instruction days that they will be if I'm reading it correctly the virtual school day includes teacher directed synchronous instruction at least 50 percent of the school day and I does that happen currently that when we're on e-learning is 50 of its synchronous I'm going back to that policy just a second Mr down finding that one and reading three it took me a long time to find it in the packet then it also but then it says unless what's part two or a waiver is requested and granted yeah so so the policy has been written to um align with State Statute where a year ago it was indicated that we could only count up to three um days um of e-learning without being 50 anything uh over three if we were going to do e-learning we would have to have at least 50 okay okay so so our calendar we stayed at three um not not knowing for sure we could get quite to that 50 threshold in every class uh so we we're keeping the calendar as we have but this policy indicates if we would would have more than three and try to count as a day it has to be at least fifty percent thank you you're welcome any other questions okay so the motion and second was to approve old business items a through D with the addition of public engagement and meeting content that we reviewed earlier in the subcommittee all those in favor say aye all right all right oh there's a post thank you for that so that was our old business new business are those things we just have put in front of you for your consideration tonight so we have field trip and professional leaves school fundraisers and claims and payroll you see the claims for August the 7th about 1.8 million dollars that's today's date payroll for July 14th and July 28th about 5.3 million dollars and you see a note there in terms of what those payroll payrolls included which meant it had no bus contracts or nine-month employee wages so a little bit less than the normal and then we also have an Administration appointment to the bcsc Health Trust so the administration of bcsc just like the school board appoints somebody to the Health Trust the administration appoints somebody to and we're requesting that John Green uh be uh allowed to continue in that position John was a former assistant principal at Columbus North and now is going to be doing some uh safety Workforce as a school corporation we'd like to have John's um we would like to have John approved to continue that work I think that is all for yes that's all my new items so I move that we approve item four requests for new business approval ENT I have a second second thank you Mr Schultz any questions or comments regarding new business items e3h the question I had was about patents so p-a-t-i-n-s I noticed it's a lot of money it looked like it was more contract but I didn't I looked at their website didn't quite understand exactly what they did for us and if we were Contracting I didn't know if we were paying salaries for them or how all that worked because it was about 920 000.

yeah that's a great question Mr major so Mr Phillips Dr Phillips good question Mr major the uh patins Grant is a state funded it's actually written into the budget every two years they're a self-sustaining Grant supported organization we simply serve as their Fiscal Agent and so basically the funds just passed through us and they fall under our umbrella yeah and then they serve the state the whole state of Indiana and they do pay us a fee for that service uh goes into the education fund helps supplement it thank you Dr Phillips any other questions so motion uh motion was made and seconded all those in favor of approving new business items e through H say I I oh there's a post thank you motion passes Dr Robert thank you requesting approval of the HR recommendations as presented this evening and what you will see this evening we have 72 recommendations 12 appointments six exits one leave and 53 special contracts and the special contracts for the board members that are new just so you know this is an annual approval that we bring every August to the board and these are those that don't serve on a regular teacher contract or administrator contract they fall into the other category of contracts that we pay and cover thank you Dr fleek promotion I move that we approve the HR recommendations as presented by Dr Fleek second Mr Grimes and Mr major all those in favor say aye oh there's a post motion carries Dr Blake thank you and an update on our staffing we currently have two openings but one we have coverage for for now and so we are looking for one more teacher to hire wow that's amazing it is that is amazing nice to see you good okay time for board input and review so if you remember this is our first meeting where we used to have multiple times for the board members to speak we've kind of combined it all together so this could be all kinds of things we're gonna let Mr Nell and kick us off well so I would give commendations to the hundreds of teachers that were in school before school started getting their classrooms ready and and Beyond teachers the counselors and many other people every school I drove by before school started the parking lot had quite a few cars in it and I knew that was a lot of work going on um also I appreciate everyone's passion tonight one thing that I would ask to give feedback to the board we have a policy for getting inappropriate books out of the libraries and I would like to hear when people come to us about a book they don't like that they have started that policy and whether or not that policy is working to to get the form from the library and fill it out turn it in and and let us know if that policy works also teachers for the back to school adren were very thrilled to get back on the bus Thursday morning and be us outside and are excited for the new year and I know the dedication they have there I'd also like to thank Dr Roberts and Mr Burnett for the back to school video I think it definitely highlighted the fun of getting back into the groove of Education after a fun fun time at summer also commending those at the state championships that we just recognized in cross-country and Tennis similar to Mr Allen I want to you know commend the and I had a little Spiel here but I'm going to go ad-lib which is always dangerous but I we I like the passion I would just caution that we share a lot more in common than we differ and at the end of the day um if you recall I believe it was may we were in north and policies were the thing of their age and now we're we're working iron sharpens iron it's gonna work its way out and we're moving forward and we've got those policies moving and at the end of the day this is another similar situation where the Venn diagram has 85 to 90 percent overlap and really at the end of the day what we need is an outlet not a board meeting like this where everybody feels it's a one-way dialogue an outlet similar to the public subcommittees which I know many of you have attended and I encourage more if we do one because I think that's a little bit more conducive for the conversation we need to have to determine where that line is and again right is we got to be reminded this is out as an outcome of Indiana Legislation and removing protections for our professionals and where they're I 100 trust the professionals but again everybody's measuring to a standard and if the standard's not clear then that's where we're at risk and uh right now it appears based on history that I've seen there's disproportionate ways of applying that standard and that's where a risk lies and so I would encourage this board to form either the board itself or a committee they're in to establish a public subcommittee that would allow for the book topic to be brought and any other legislation induced topics that will come effective January 1 so that that could be the outlet and means in which the public gets its feedback in and feels like it's heard it has that conversation we can decide what is appropriate I have four children in elementary school I would be very concerned if they heard some of the words that were here today deeply concerned but again right as every child is different and especially although some books may come off harmless to others for some I mean I'm a parent of a foster children and those have taken on sexual trauma and there's things that known as secondary trauma and you can get secondary trauma through honestly some of the I mean some of the language that was just brought forth here and so I would caution a one-size-fits-all mentality I would always I would encourage this board I guess I'll wrap up on mad libbing too far I would I want to ask this board to formalize the committee on the library materials to establish a line and so at the end of the day the folks out there have an accountability factor to us that that's where the line is drawn and if so be it they want to change then there's elections that could do that thank you Mr Grimes uh yeah first of all thanks to all the community members that took the time to come here and be audience members and or speak this evening congratulations again to the two state champions uh Columbus North Catherine Wilson the individual tennis and the team of four girls that was here this morning on this evening not this morning this evening the four by eight uh four by eight hundred team thanks to Dr Bozeman for a uh a very informative facilities update presentation Dr pleek for the teacher evaluation info and the HR update um thanks to all those involved for a very informative I believe it's the 26th annual uh 2023-24 back to school guide that was in the newspaper I don't know a week or so ago um and uh thanks also to to the corporation for getting um some public links on the website including the the 2024 capital projects website and I know there are a couple others on there as well and then lastly thanks to uh Dr Roberts and the others involved for a very amusing uh back to school video all the school things so thank you very much yeah I think um so a couple of things great job safe start to the school year if you guys recall the last couple years we've had some excitement at the start of the school year which we did not have this time so I hope I haven't jinxed us it must be the hard work of all of the all of the people in our schools to keep Kids Safe um I'd also like to say I mentioned this to somebody in the audience my kids were exhausted this weekend and it was amazing okay so I appreciated the few days they had to get up early I got a sleep in um I'm sure the teachers felt the same way and I hope they're they're got some recovery this weekend to hit the full week first full week in stride and then um I I really appreciate Dr Bozeman the work that your team does on on all of these facility upgrades um you know it is important a kid has to feel like they can be set up for Success when they walk into some of our schools and see the resources that they have available to them so I think we're thoughtful about the work that that we do it also has to be a great way to draw in teachers and the right kind of teaching Talent so so anyway I'm I'm really excited to see some of those things come to life thanks for that Mr major yeah I want to thank everybody that's worked really hard to start this school year off right I know that there's been some bumps along the way with different things I have learned more about how Breakaway lanyards worked in the last week than I ever thought I would need to know and I have tested it and it does break away but my 17 year old did not appreciate me running the test on her so the it um it is hard to do a lot of this during the summer so I appreciate all the work you know again there's teachers there's AIDS there's Administration uh we we often don't highlight custodial and grounds Crews and bus drivers and all those that do the behind the scenes work cafeteria that do all the the behind the scenes work to get everything ready so I just wanted to show some appreciation for that and also for everybody that got things running quicker when things were found to be deficient um please all parents and students as well please be patient and give it a little bit of time it was just the first two days so we're on day three now so give them a little bit of time to get everything sorted out it was I did earlier that I did donate some money to Taylorsville Elementary School food pantry I will highlight that as if you have the opportunity to throw 10 or 20 dollars their way something small they feed support around 410 families and around 1900 different individuals from that food pantry uh it's that's that's quite a few people that are not getting food as regularly as they should so uh I committed to donate my whole two thousand dollar salary so they got uh 442 dollars and 10 cents recently so a buck here too if everybody could do that we'll help them out a lot I wanted to thank everybody that spoke tonight on both sides I'm not going to agree with everybody on everything but it is very hard to stand at that Podium when you've not done it before and so I appreciate everybody that shared their life stories uh uh it's there's stories that are sad there's stories that are happy on both sides and I and I hope that whatever we do we can find a way to have more conversation this is great that people have the opportunity to speak their mind we need to be able to figure out instead of having one way we have two-way all right so I will commit myself I'm sure others will as well if you reach out and you want to speak please let me know I don't care which side of the aisle you're on we have to understand what is bothering you so that we can help either calm your concerns or identify who the right person is that you need to speak with the last thing Dale I'll give you this as far as policy goes for books I can tell you that I am one of those pesky book banners I did take the book that I read at The Forum that I felt that was very inappropriate it is very hard to read some of these things aloud and I put that through the test so at the beginning of the summer it had stopped with Dr Roberts we knew that there's laws that were coming out that were being updated and some of the things that we kind of left on the table to revisit have been mentioned by everybody but I'll just reiterate I think a committee will help I think looking at the public agenda and looking at or the meeting agenda and the public engagement committees it gave people the opportunity to speak and we were able to deliver improved processes if we have a conversation you all aren't going to agree so take the 95 percent of it you don't agree on and focus on the five percent that you do make a little bit at a time all right you're not going to get it all on either side just a little bit at a time I think the if we look at book ratings it gives the librarian something to go back to and say it's it meets these criteria if we have special sections of the library where a senior can go but a freshman can't I think things like that help we've even talked about from a technology perspective when you're when your child goes to check a book out that you may not see all right there's not all these people are not bad parents if their kids look at these books the kids are interested in something they're curious in something most of us have burned our hand on the stove even though mom said it was hot so in this case how do we make sure that parents are aware so using technology to notify a parent might be another way so there's things that we can do but it's going to take Community conversation it's going to take a lot more than the three minutes you get so we'll have to ask for everybody to commit some time to it and be patient with one another because you're probably again you're not going to all agree so thank you for all coming here tonight and sharing your thoughts I I appreciate and I'm sure everybody does too Mr Ryan you got anything for us yep yeah I have one thing see we started downloading true story I'm sorry next time next time you're in at the library one of my uh fellow co-workers asked me uh reference to where would Dr Roberts be when school to open and and so I looked at her as a well he can't make it to all the schools so he made a video and I showed her the video and unfortunately every time she saw me she decided she wanted to sing that song don't do that to me again my apologies and and that's it I'm done thank you Miss Frank okay our next meeting is uh uh August 21st so two weeks from tonight 6 30 p.m and here is that right okay that's okay two weeks in here 6 30.

chair McKenna I'm Ken Garber I live at 28 Henry Hill Court I'm looking forward to the discussion on grid availability important issue um commissioner Briggs in her newsletter suggested that residents submit questions during public comment time so here are mine one I assume that increasing grid availability means adding substation Transformers to step down more power off Regional High Voltage ITC transmission um if new demand is high enough does this mean entirely new substations need to be built two question two to provide capacity to serve large new developments that include rooftop solar and battery storage can you use can DTE use these der capabilities to offset its peak load and thus limit the necessary work to just reconductoring existing circuits instead of doing these substation upgrades to date I haven't seen DTE make any effort to adapt its systems for developers who want to put in distributed generation and thus make it easier to add grid capacity uh question three Ann Arbor has large areas served by outdated 4.8 kilovolt ungrounded transmission lines and that's one big reason for our outage problems uh DTE acknowledges these need upgrading to 13.2 kilovolt systems I've heard that uh 13.2 conversion requires a new substation with a new ITC feed at 120 kilovolt transmission which in turn requires miso approval so lead time is a big issue my question is shouldn't DTE be currently replacing its local 4.8 kilowatt local grid with 13.2 kilovolts while building or upgrading the necessary substations to solve our capacity problem this would address reliability and capacity at the same time instead DTE seems to be avoiding 13.2 conversion at least here in Ann Arbor and just hardening the existing 4.8 kilovolt lines I'd be interested to hear from Mr Witkowski what dte's plans are for 4.8 to 13.2 conversion in Ann Arbor question four I've heard that DTE has charged developers fees on the order of up to three hundred thousand dollars each to increase capacity to serve new developments is this true and if so how does DTE justify this given that the mpsc guarantees the company at 9.9 return on equity for Capital Improvements uh isn't DTE getting paid twice for the same work 130 seconds and once by rate payers uh question five last one uh it's corollary question shouldn't DTE be paying itself for capacity upgrades like any company making a capital investment in new Revenue generating infrastructure um so uh those are my five questions do we need new substations uh can DTE leverage uh der to reduce the necessary work uh the 4.8 to 13.2 conversion what's DT's plans for Ann Arbor on dte's excessive Feast of developers and double dipping from the public purse right and thank you thank you um no further callers great okay so we're going to move into discussion um I'll share a little bit about uh this this component of what we have on the agenda and kind of the thinking behind what we put together here um so the thought was to have a bit of a Roundtable discussion and so we invited two speakers to come today to the meeting um we invited a professor Seth guicama from U of M uh he was unable to join us in live right now because he got a flight delay uh but he provided a recorded statement and we also have my Mike wakowski here on the call um thank you so much Mike for joining us we're excited to speak with you um so we've asked both um both of these folks to come and prepare some brief remarks and I'm going to share kind of the prompt um just so you have a sense of of what the um the kind of concept around the sharing will be and uh so then after we hear the two shares and I'd like to kind of open it up and have all the Commissioners have kind of an open discussion and and could you ask questions and um definitely share um if you have any um questions from constituents otherwise um yeah we'll kind of make it a bit of an open discussion so let me just quickly bring up the prompt okay we're looking to have a conversation with all the speakers on the commission about what the reliability of the electric grid might look like in five or ten years and what could change over those time frames to reduce outages and improve outage response um with that in mind it might not be as necessary to look at specific dates or areas um but we are concerned about outages that were experienced uh recently in in many parts of Ann Arbor and we feel that it's at the top of mind um especially from from recent uh uh storms so that's what we shared and um why don't we have uh the recorded message first and then Mike will have you so because we have you live we can kind of go right into the discussion from there does that sound okay great okay Joe can you play that for us yep I will share um please let me know I'm clicking share sound but if it doesn't share please let me know professor at the University of Michigan and I was asked to speak at tonight's uh council meeting talk a little bit about Power Systems uh storms and reliability I wish I could be there with you in person but due to travel challenges I am stuck in Chicago trying to get home today so like I said I'm Seth Geiger I'm a professor in engineering at the University of Michigan in a lot of my research over the past 15 to 20 years has focused on power outage forecasting and Storm Restoration with utilities we've worked a lot with a lot of the big utilities throughout the US and developed models that they use to help support their storm response planning in particular outage forecasting wanted to talk a little bit about kind of the outage process why do utilities have outages what can they do about it what can't they do about it talk a little bit about restoration and then talk about some of the longer term hardening options so in terms of outages for big storms no utility can prevent all the outages there will be outages there's nothing well there's nothing they can do within reasonable costs all the outages so there will be outages what the utility has to do is Strike this cost benefit analysis of how much Harding do we do how do we restore from those outages that we're inevitably going to have that we can get that right balance of cost to customers versus reliability of the system so in the kinds of weather events we get in the southeast Michigan area typically wind events uh storm winter events ice storms like we had earlier this year most of the outages are going to be in the distribution so we have the generation transmission and distribution the generation is the production of the power the transmission is the high voltage lines typically very high maintained to a very high standard and then the distribution is what most of us typically see and that's our our lines the cities in the rural areas around Ann Arbor so this is where most of the outages are in Wind events and snow events and Ice events and this is where a company like DTE has to put in a lot of effort to maintain those lines so what causes outages uh often it's things impacting lines so trees falling on lines is a big one could be debris in some cases it could be lines themselves failing but typically a big one is trees impacting lights which points to one of the big things that utilities have to do to maintain the system and maintain reliability which is tree trimming featuring's not always popular with homeowners because well they're trimming our trees but this is um research has shown this is arguably the single biggest thing that utilities can do to improve the reliability of the system that is trimmed the trees more frequently in terms of farther back so utilities have to have the leeway to do that tree trimming and DTE has significantly improved their tree trimming over the last few years since a big storm we had a I think it was a March storm a number of years ago so they put a lot of effort into that tree trimming process and made some significant improvements that's not always popular with homeowners because they're out there cutting your trees but this is this has a huge impact on power system reliability so this is one of the things they can do in advance of any storm to improve the reliability now let's talk a little bit about a storm that's forecast so kind of the short term what does utility do so they see a weather forecast that says okay we're gonna have 70 mile dust winds and hail and lightning and all this other stuff right what can they do well the decisions they have are how how many crews do they have on hand to respond to that storm and where do they station them and then there's some extent material but cruises the big one and this is where a lot of our researchers tried to help utilities of helping them plan those um true needs so what they have to be able to do is estimate roughly how many outages are we going to have because they can get if they can get number of outages they can figure out well how many crews do we need um given how much work a crew can get done in a 16 hour shift how many crews do we need to get power back on at a certain rate so they need some way of estimating how bad it's going to be before the event so they can get those crews in place so they're not waiting 24 48 hours to get those crews in there to restore power so once the outages happen then they have to restore power um prioritization rules vary a little bit utility to utility but generally across the large number of utilities we work with first just go after critical facilities hospitals fire stations police stations water pumping stations things like that some utilities will then prioritize commercial areas particularly commercial areas that have grocery stores and them not all utilities do that and then the general rule is we want to get the most number of people back online as fast as we can so if you're like me and you live in a rural area towards the end of the line we're lower priority which makes sense from the overall societal good so the utilities then go through the process of restoring power and it's a really complicated process it costs them an immense amount of money that they then have to expand to get people's power back on okay so that's kind of the short term in the long term utility vegetation management or tree trimming is the big thing they can do they can also think about things to harden the system for example in Hurricane prone areas one thing that some utilities like Florida Power and Light have done is replace wooden poles sub wooden poles with concrete poles very very expensive but very effective at keeping those holes holes from being broken something else that sometimes gets mentioned as undergrounding power lines so this is something after a really big outage that often press and politicians say oh we should bury everything the challenge there is cost the cost of undergrounding line vary tremendously but a million to two million a line Mile in relatively simple train is not a bad estimate so if you think about how many how much line there is just in Ann Arbor or just in Washington County this would be an immense cost and if you then divide by the number of customers most of us probably are not going to be willing to pay that so undergrounding Universal undergrounding is generally cost prohibitive now if you're building new construction then the cost difference between undergrading and building overhead isn't as big and you see more new construction that's underground again not always so undergrounding is one of those things people talk about but it's not a universal great solution it only makes sense in very targeted places as the utility goes through this whole process there's also another party involved well at least one more and in particular The Regulators are involved so the state Regulators have a say in evaluating the performance of a utility both in the long run and in a specific event but then they also have to say in deciding what costs are allowable what costs can be passed on to customers what costs do utilities have to use and if utility is going to invest a lot of money in hardening a system or doing something like that they have to get regulatory approval to do this for example one utility worked with on the East Coast they were proposing four billion dollars of improvements to try and protect against hurricane storm surge right after Hurricane Sandy they don't generally have problems they were having a hard time making that that argument so this is something that kind of overlies all of this which is the role of the state regulators so one other thing that I was asked to talk a little bit about is if you look at DTE versus consumers right two utilities right next to each other same state Regulators uh generally fairly similar weather patterns what's the reliability look like well the utilities are required to report to the state they're what's called Sadie safety and Katie numbers we're going to talk about Stadium safety system average Interruption frequency index and system average Interruption duration index so measures how frequently power goes out and how long it's out when it goes out these are very imperfect measures uh We've published some work on that but that's what gets reported um kind of universally so if you look at consumers versus DTE on their latest 80 and safety reportings they're about the same there's really not a distinguishable difference between those two utilities it might seem to those of us like me that are DT customer things have been worse but if you look at that ice storm we had earlier this year it hit the DTE area a lot harder than it did the consumers area so from a data perspective at least what's reported publicly to the state they're very similar one interesting thing is that there is enough word trend in these indices over the past few years that is things are getting slightly worse and it's a discernible Trend it's not a it's not like a rocket climb but it is an upward Trend um what's not clear is why is this is the weather getting um more difficult is something else going on it's not clear so overall this hopefully gives you some idea of kind of the picture around power outages again most of them kind of what from the weather events we have are happening in the Distribution Center distribution system that utility vegetation management is the single most important thing that DTE can do to help maintain system reliability even if it's not always popular with cities and customers um and they they do have this interaction with the state that there's in some sense constraining them but it's also a partnership in figuring out how to improve this so I hope this helps um if you have questions you can contact me my um email on sgaikema umich.edu thank you stop sharing and just want to again say thanks if you couldn't tell um he was recording from the airport today as his flight was significantly delayed I know some have experienced that recently but appreciate the effort for willing to still record in an airport so commission over back yeah I just want to know if he's delayed by a power outage I'm sorry fantastic a rhetorical question or no okay um thank you thank you so much Joe for sharing that with us um I I let um I let him know uh that I'm gonna follow up with him so um with our minutes here and some notes that I'm taking so um I can pass all this good stuff along okay um Mike wakowski would you like to share with us what you came just came to say yeah so again uh first of all Mike Witkowski one of our engineering managers here at DTE uh thank you for uh having us here this evening and um I I guess I'll start with going through a few high level notes and then I'll dive into the questions that were asked those were some very good questions uh by the uh resident earlier and then um I'll be happy to take any any questions at the the council has here so um you know we're we're here to to come and talk about what we've got going on on the system uh what the city of Ann Arbor uh residence businesses have been experiencing uh you know what we're you know trying to do about it so uh yes we know there are uh definitely areas uh that struggle with reliability repeated outages um it sometimes moves around uh year over year and that's kind of where you get those pockets of customers who really you know hey I've had two three four outages this year uh and it becomes very repetitive and very disruptive especially a lot of people most of us here you know working taking meetings from home so you're noticing things a lot more than uh you used to where you come home and oh my my clocks are blinking to easy reset you don't it's not the same disruption so um here at DT we've we've really been attacking the reliability it it does uh take a little while to get the results uh we're looking for and you're looking for um but at a high level uh there's four main points that we are really diving into um and the professor kind of kind of hit on some of them for us number one really is tree drum uh it is it is a tough thing to do um we all love our trees um I've got some good ones around me here in Livonia and um you know I drive around the neighborhood and they're getting into the power line so I you know we got to go through and and trim those out um we do aim for a five-year cycle on our tree trimming um and Ann Arbor is very close to uh being on that five-year cycle um I think by the end of this year it might be um on that five-year point so um it's actually further ahead than than some other communities in that standpoint um areas where we do uh complete our our tree trimming uh do experience a 60 to 70 Improvement in reliability so that's both in terms of your uh number of times you go out and the length of your outage uh just because you've got less less occurrences so it's it's a big uh big impact uh in terms of a quick hit uh instant result the longer term things uh you've got your your maintenance programs where you go through uh replace pole top equipment uh do your maintenance at your substations uh and and keep everything in that working condition so there's a variety of programs we have uh in that space um and honestly for Ann Arbor it does fall into the next category which is more of uh rebuilt and and upgrades um so we've been talking I've talked with planning Commissions in in City councils here in Ann Arbor for the better part of a decade on on some of the substation projects uh we've been working on in the city [Music] um uh a couple of the big ones right now we've got uh continuing work at our buckler substation which is there at our Broadway service center site um that is one of those projects that is in that 4.8 to 13.2 uh distribution voltage uh bucket uh that's one of the actually the first one in Ann Arbor uh that we're working on in um I'm glad to say we're finally bringing that home uh here within the next I'll say 9 to 12 months um optimistically by end of year but probably into uh next spring to um work through the final conversions on that project so when we do these projects to convert from 4.8 to 13 to um it's it's pretty much a wholesale replacement of the poles and wires um and when we're putting in new poles and wires it's to today's standards so you know a lot of the system in Ann Arbor is from when the community was built um you know 20s 30s 40s 50s um so that equipment has has served its purpose it's time to get the new stuff up there and it's it's the the technology the standards the hardware is so much better than it used to be um you know at a simple stance um Professor mentioned uh transitioning from wood poles to concrete poles and steel poles uh we're working that in so that our most essential service lines are featuring steel poles or concrete poles um we're getting rid of wood cross arms uh either going with no cross arm where the connections are directly to the poll or with the fiberglass cross arm and then the the insulators that the wires connect to um used to just kind of be a little piece of porcelain uh with a with the ridge in it the wire sits in there and you kind of strap it on with a with a loop and it just holds in there the new ones are um they have a metal top and it's a clamp top so you fit it in there bolt it in and um it's it's a really strong system so that's what Ann Arbor can expect to be seeing wherever we're doing these projects like I said that that buckler one that we're working to finish up right now um we just did uh an area of work in the northern part of downtown and uh the next wave that we're going to be working on here the rest of Summer and into the fall is in the northern residential area um Northwest area like uh towards uh like Sunset and west of Main Street there so that's project number one that is heading towards the Finish Line uh and we're not stopping there um my engineering team has been working on a handful of other projects that we've um moved into design and starting into Construction uh the second one is on the east side of town uh actually just outside of town uh at a substation at Plymouth in Dixboro um and that is going to be uh strengthening up that area which will then Cascade uh West over 23 uh kind of along Plymouth Road there so it'll it'll bring uh into that area and allow us to do additional upgrades there so that one just started uh construction this year other parts of the city we just moved out of engineering into design uh similar projects at our uh substitution called Pittsfield which is down on um honestly just off of uh Eisenhower and Burton um down in the Southeast corner so that's going to be the same thing full rebuild of the poles and wires and at that location we're going to be proposing to replace the substation on site so basically take out all the old equipment build a new substation on that site on the west side of town at our Hemlock substation uh at uh kind of roughly Maple and Liberty uh same thing uh replacing all the poles and wires in that area um and uh replacing that substation so those two each are like is it just coming out of engineering uh starting into designing we're gonna start to see some Field construction next year on those uh out in the uh the residential areas and uh each of those projects uh will continue for several years as we work through those um and then we've got uh plans that we're starting for the remaining substations in town too so it's kind of a cascading effect as you're converting this 4.8 to 13.2 you need to have 13 2 to 13 2 connections that way you can move the load around you can tie the circuits together um and it it's not just for capacity reasons there but it's for reliability um that way if if there is an event uh where a circuit goes down uh you can tie it to an adjacent circuit and that really gets into uh one of the last points of our of our plan is really looking into automation uh getting into a smart grid that um can perform some Restorations without manual intervention so um you know if you think of the circuit breaker that you've got in your basement if you blow a fuse you got to go downstairs flip the switch um and uh you know sometimes there's nothing you need to fix you just kind of switch that uh breaker back in and it holds you can think of the same thing on the electric grid a lot of events honestly um caused by trees are are momentary in nature so yes you get you get the ones that bring down wires bring down poles and our stronger system should mitigate um a good portion of those but you do get ones where a tree limb comes down and and causes two wires to contact so that's enough to blow a fuse um but with some of the new equipment we're getting out there it will run through those operations uh automatically so you don't need that manual intervention you don't need to go downstairs flip your breaker I.E you don't need to send a line crew out to go plug with fuse even beyond that the smart grid is really another level more where if uh you know area a is out of power because there is a downline we're able to isolate that from our control system downtown and then reroute the power through another circuit um re-energizing as many customers uh as possible uh while we wait to make the the repairs of the down wire so um those are our four main points um that we're really uh diving into uh tree trim and maintenance kind of the Cabo one two uh short-term uh short-term work uh for a quick impact and then our longer term plays around rebuilds conversions and uh system Automation and smart grid so that's kind of the prepared notes um would uh would you like me to dive into the four or five questions that were asked by the caller yes okay so those were really good questions um and I think I started to touch on some of those a little bit uh question number one was around substation Transformers and uh you know our plans for more substations um yes we did build um our new buckler substation about 10 years ago now like I said at the Ann Arbor service center um and we did build a new station in partnership with the University of Michigan on their campus um but when you look at the rest of Ann Arbor we've we've really looked at what we can do with our existing properties so what we're looking to do is um replace on-site um for the vast majority of them so I'm not going to you know take it off the table that we might need a new substation somewhere that we don't have one today but the plan that we've put out there um does look like we'll be we will be able to efficiently convert all of the 4.8 to 13 too create um about a level of 3x capacity as far as what Ann Arbor has now on the distribution system by just replacing the existing substations where they are there's some other um things we have if uh you know you get a large growth area somewhere or you know depending how EVS play out uh what level of charger is needed um throughout commercial or residential areas there's some things we're looking to learn in that space But the plan we've got together like I said about 3x capacity and it does plan for full uh 4.8 to 13 2 conversion throughout the city of Ann Arbor so no I don't think we will need more substations at this time but uh you know what kind of we'll kind of see how that goes a little bit the second question was around uh distributed energy uh resources uh ders um that is definitely something that becomes a lot more feasible as you convert to 13 too um because as you've got uh proposed deers whether it's solar storage out there as as those Dr owners whether it's us or um you know independent customers if they want to put power back onto the grid the grid needs to be able to support that two-way power flow and that is a lot more feasible with the 13-2 grid just comes down to voltage support resistance of the wires um and uh you know we're excited to be working with the Viridian development um on their plans um with uh you know solar and storage there that could support the community as well as uh possibly come back onto the grid as well so um it's definitely something we are working towards uh we want to learn more about and see where uh where the industry takes us but we're definitely ready to to support uh the interest in that space um I talked quite a bit about 4.8 to 13 um and that that kind of lines up with our big what we call our DGP our distribution grid plan that's something that we're uh working on with the mpsc and that kind of looks at not just our one year or five year view but what our 15 plus year view is for the whole system so um everything I was talking about our our four-point plan um really weaves into that DGP um and uh conversions is a big piece of that part of the question that was asked was uh you know how it comes into play with um connections to ITC the transmission company um so in a simple terms the ITC they run the 120 000 volt uh transmission lines that connects some substations to substations DTE also operates as sub transmission line which operates at forty thousand volts um and so we have some stations um actually the newest of which was is either the one that we built in partnership with U of M that's a 120 to 40 KV step down station um where ITC brings in 120.

sir okay um I'll go and share my screen [Music] um can you see my screen correct yeah we do awesome great thank you um well you have crystals on hello everybody um thank you so much for having me um again my name is Vishal Alicia I'm an undergraduate student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and today I'll be discussing a research study on something called perceptions of intelligence but before I give it to you what the study entails and how it relates to go to schools and education in general um first we really understand what exactly are perceptions of intelligence and why they're important so why to study even necessary in the first place and that begins with the role of socioeconomic status or SAS in education we normally unfortunately that SCS significantly likes to both children and or students and teachers in education where for instance children from oscs backgrounds tend to develop their academic skills more slowly and teachers at Lowe's SCS schools are generating less offensive in their instruction no obviously these socioeconomic influences on students and cks are obviously it has been one of the well-known for decades but the hidden danger here is the way teachers affect students as a function of LCS specifically ssex which stands for school so School social economic status excuse me sscs predicts how teachers treat their students um differentiate their students as a function of sscs and that can affect student performance like I don't know ssef School teachers tend to have Lowered Expectations for their students and even to the point that they give them as less teachable while that high socs schools teachers tend to give their students more autonomy and give them more opportunities equal opportunities for success as you might imagine this could be detrimental to not only students performance but also their overall well-being and you've been correct in that assumption also an osscs scores when students perceive this differential treatment by the teachers towards them students tend to have great feelings and less motivation and over time of course that's going to have worse that's going to worse in their performance then the officers through issca schools where the treatment treatment is more equal it's not differentially the students aren't differentially treated so that's going to lead to more motivation and ultimately a better school performance so the prior to seeing how this academic achievement Gap is being associated with ssds oh and in a different manner this time through beliefs and actions by the teachers towards the students so that the question becomes what are the beliefs that are going to SAS that are behind these actions behind this differential treatment by the teachers towards the students and the Interline the perceptions of intelligence or POI for short now this is comprises of three main beliefs about intelligence so the first is self-perceptions of intelligence and the second is characteristics of intelligence and I'm getting into these police abound to open greater but the third belief is something you might be familiar with it's something called fixed versus growth mindsets of intelligence and so I'll just go over those definitions briefly on a fixed mindset of intelligence positive staff intelligence can change over time so no matter how much we try and practice um someone with the fixed mindset would say that they can't get any smarter and some of the program set of intelligence would say the opposite that intelligence is valuable and that they can get smarter through Practice Center effort and so this has been these mindsets have been strongly linked to student performance for many years now so there may be no coincidence that teachers and students mindsets of intelligence are strongly correlated with one another and with an intensity of that fixed mindsets of intelligence are negatively associated with SAS it seems that or I should say that what do you mean particularly associated with ses that would be that um students with a growth mindset are more likely to come from a high SCS background than vice versa but when we consider these two pieces of evidence it seems that a low ssds biases teachers into internalizing some of these negative social cultural messages from society and when they internalize those messages they might be more likely to manifest into a fixed mindset from the teachers that then adds down to the students possibly through this differential treatments that we saw earlier and when this happens um it can also create um it has you can also have impact on student performance in addition to there being a direct link between students mindsets and on students academic performance so for instance students that you that excuse me students at low sscs teachers Sports schools when they view their students as less suitable that strongly resembles a fixed mindset of intelligence because it positive you that from the perspective of the teachers no matter how much they teach or instruct those students you know they can't get any better academically and then likewise lowest so okay sorry um but yeah likewise students at the low SS low sscs schools would they perceive that differential treatment and believe Less in the value of effort overability and they begin to lack motivation that also resembles the fixed mindset of intelligence because a fixed mindset the instance of it is that effort is um it's devalued compared to ability because if someone with a fixed mindset would say that my ability is what it is and so the longitudinal effect here comes from a study where students who had professors with a growth mindset ended up having um worse or sorry um yeah sorry students with professors who had a growth mindset went on to have better educational outcomes than students with professors with a fixed mindset of intelligence so the instances of how ssds relates to their security account maybe through the teachers through the relationship where sscs sorry where I says yes predicts the teachers perceptions of intelligence and that predicts students perceptions of intelligence and ultimately that's going to hurt their academic performance no actually um I think I'm running like a little bit but one time so would you like me to and just get the highlights on the side because it is a long slide um over which guys you need to receive as normal the request is to hit the highlights of the presentation you want me to yes if you don't mind covering the highlights or the presentation please yeah so um you know now that we understand the broader picture of what perceptions of intelligence are and how they relate to socioeconomic status um we can go into the other aspects of intelligence or perceptions of intelligence and all that these concepts are relatively new to research since the reason that they also relate to mindsets or to rather um sooner performance just like mindsets of intelligence and self-receptions of intelligence for instance that's the view of what someone believes about their own intellectual abilities or in the case of teachers what do they think about their students intellectual abilities and so there are three or there's three main pieces of pieces of evidence regarding the fact that um we believe that mindsets influence self-perceptions and intelligence but I'll go over that and the main takeaway is that a fixed mindset of intelligence May um promote worse self-perceptions of intelligence and by worse I mean you think less of them so if you think that you're unintelligent and so of course the problem here is now how do we combat these unfortunately aesthetic student well-being and student self-esteem and given that um this proximity of course between the teacher and the student we would hope that we can use the teacher student relationship to combat these harmful beliefs but the problem is that at low srcs schools they tend to be worse to particular student relationships such that the teacher is not as likely to get to know the students in which might be because that they might be less motivated to do so and that can later them into having worse self-perceptions themselves towards the students because they might not be able to um see if they make a picture of the students talents because they do social cultural factors that is the teacher might be more inclined to internalize the students academic performance that has been affected by SES and therefore have more self-perceptions than selfless themselves and then getting into characteristics of intelligence that pertains to the extent to which intelligence can be measured by school performance so for instance there's getting good grades necessarily signal high intelligence and again there are some takeaways here but the single bit the takeaway is that three characteristics and thousands for COI for sure might moderate Theory leadership between mindsets and self-perceptions of intelligence such that I could promote it's my types of intelligence and make that mindset self-perceptions relationship even stronger because it can make students more vulnerable to self-esteem losses and um I would have gone over this but self-esteem is the effectively the middle link between mindsets and social perceptions and so the big takeaway here is that at no sscs schools students need teachers like that might be more vulnerable to having worse self perceptions of intelligence and worse characteristics of intelligence which can endanger students motivation self-esteem and well-being ultimately and so look around evidence points to sses predicting teachers perceptions and intelligence which predicts students perceptions of intelligence and that affects their systems performance and so again there are three main questions here the first one is do teachers perceptions of intelligence predict the students POI and then again relatedly what's the role of socioeconomic status of socs in this relationship because we expect a lower sses to predict worse teachers of UI which would predict of course students ay and then again the research question we just covered does coy indeed moderate the mindset self-perceptions relationship and so obviously um our research team has our own goals in terms of what we want to accomplish with this study but we want to make this a mutually thankful beneficial Partnership if you were to participate in this study um we plan to use these study results to inform your and other schools professional development and student intervention programs specifically for promoting more advantages POI in its Futures and in students and of course this would be beneficial in any area but especially maybe towards low-life FCS areas given the predictive role of accessories in POI and so namely again I'll hit the highlights here namely proving teachers at eoi given the procedure student relationship could be helpful to motivate them to get to know their students and help reduce the risk of students adopting their own bad self perceptions as well as really focusing on building trust in communication between the teachers and the students on an intellectual level and by doing that we hope to allow them to connect better emotionally and give them the necessary social muscles socio-emotional support and responsive climate needed to succeed and ultimately that is both the value Visions to enable Student Success and so to hit the um exactly how we're going to execute this Vision um our common ambition here the first step would be recruiting eligible participants and eligible participants include students and teachers of ages 10 and up for grades 6 through 12 and I also prepare the Improvement fire that can be distributed and um to selects teachers knows what's involved and studied and then the students and teachers would are interested would formally enrolled in the study by bringing the online consent and descent forms so it just contains all the relevant details of the study and we can decide whether or not they're willing to participate and what you would do once they participate is complete a survey so the survey would be 10 to 15 minutes long um it is online so it can be good outside or during the school hours whatever convenient and then it's open between September and October but although we can move this research timeline if need be like if it's a busy time during the school year but the survey is able to assess students and teachers perceptions intelligence their POI it's a slightly different version for who students is like from these survey results spoken to create POI scores now we're going to compare experience into our research questions but yeah regardless of what our research timeline is we're hoping to move forward with the study this semester and we'd be really excited is you enjoyed our study and really helped contribute to our efforts of attacking the student achievement development so thank you so much for your attention and please let me know if you have any questions and yeah I'd be happy to take any questions you have come on one second sir this is my understanding that this is a research yes correct is he aware of protocol s based on my reading correspondence with up yesterday we have informed that any research project that he comes before Public School District need to be our group by the nation as well he we haven't we have put him in contact with the nation with the names and he is also he has communicated that he will be happy to also seek a consent from the nation to be able to contact with this study okay great um were you going to respond oh yes sir was your question I just want to say that um a they didn't like it it didn't work you know go through with it in fact I think they went to them to the nation for approval and they also United okay yeah yeah I know I completely understand um you know if they had if I can clarify you know anything else that can um you know I'll finance that decision um I understand but yeah thank you so much for letting me present and share this opportunity with you um thank you for the presentation um it's it's really hard to um when stuff like this comes to the nation or to the schools that people are reluctant because um I know previously um I had heard of you know the information being used in a negative manner I guess uh against the nation on these kinds of surveys and stuff so for me it's like it's it's uh it's kind of hard for me to to support it but I do understand and I do want to say that I am curious to find out especially from our students um what they perceived themselves uh as far as intelligence and the connection between them and the teachers and how the teachers feel about that same that exactly what you put up on this on the screen there because um it does have an effect on our students and our students they need to be encouraged all the time no matter where they come from no matter what you know they go through and stuff that encouragement is so important and and the fact that that um that they're not giving up on and that they continue to move forward in that positive manner so for me it's like I want to see what what can be done and how it can help us our school um but I also don't understand and don't know how the information is going to um or where it's gonna go and how it's gonna you know affect us and so it's you know of [Music] sorry um I guess I know there's there's probably other schools involved and you know it sounds like that you know they've done already a lot of research to come up with the information that you have but like for us specifically our schools specifically our students specifically our teachers thoughts and information I would like um you know so like I said it's really hard for me to to because I want to know that I want to know how and I do understand I do support that we need to set the bar high for our students and then no more of the slow bar stuff because it's not it's not helping um our students need to know that they can accomplish way more than they they think they can so for me it's bittersweet so that's all I have to say that you know if you were to participate anyone um who is participating in these schools with school districts would be completely Anonymous but um if I were to um you know if you were to just use the survey without like you know formerly enrolled into the study um you know I'd certainly be happy to do that except um there's certainly it's completely new um if yeah I'm adventure to send the PowerPoint but it's compiled to integrated scales that RDX is so in other words it has been validated um basically we don't know 100 yet if the results coming from the survey are reliable so um you know maybe I could even complete this study first and then based on the validation of the survey um I'd be happy to you know come back again and then uh you know get the service for you guys do teams well yeah yeah something so the only comment I have and I know that and I don't mean to speak against I want to say thank you for the presentation I think what we recognize what I want to say personally is that while the nation's intention is to protect our interest as a child what I do understand as well is that we do need to have some very real data or understanding of exactly what it is we're dealing with when we talk about things like what Miss Max is talking about because regardless of whether the nation decides who can research or what I think this information we see a lot of when we're out in other other National types of conferences but I always wonderful what does that look like or something to the degree of our type of circumstances because we do know that there's there's absolutely impacts from like you just said the perception or the perception of intelligence based on my social economic standing because I the where I live I'm not as smart and so how does that affect our kids not because they're gone all of them but because they're in our schools and we should probably be really focused on how is that going to impact them that's what I understand and I know that there's a lot of them now who are just adamantly against anything but if we're gonna do something about it then we have to be open to having these types of conversations and no not pointing anyone out because obviously no one wants to talk about their economic uh status but I think the capability of having it we volunteer only anonymously and um I wouldn't mind participating because I mean if if anything it helps us to really kind of glitch forward a little more and it helps us to to really kind of go after certain dollars or fun deals or all of those things on some of the disparities that we know we have but we don't have anything to show for it other than our test scores so we'll have to kind of look at it in multiple different views and I know our values are important as a nation but I think us as a school boarding to recognize that we are kind of in the dark sometimes because we don't really know and understand that and it hasn't really been given that opportunity so thank you for I think upper offering that type of opportunity I hope that maybe if I didn't hear a no or anything but Mr Diaz whether or not you want for more support maybe his offer of coming back with some more information maybe we do decide as a body to say hey Nation this might be something we might be interested in and really kind of help them move along because I know that there's been others that have come before and I think they did go to the IRB diet because they the institutional review board is hard they will come down on you on every single little detail of what you're doing and I know that that's the intention is to protect our interests however this might be something that would be really beneficial to the school district and all school districts not just us all the schools on the nation should have some form of understanding of you know what we're talking about all the time like holistic approaches to what we're doing because we know people are dealing with things they just don't like to talk about it but the kids show it when they don't want to participate in education because they're worried about all those other things that are impacting them at home so let's just and of course um you know take your time and make no decision I understand this is a sensitive matter and um note that um in this study the socioeconomic status it's um I can provide a link but there's a public online database it's called the Stanford educational data archive and in this study the SCS SDS Mentor is a district level measure that I believe it's the database contains data that's about two years old but um that's what I was planning to so now I've read it and asking each individual participants um Associated on data because that isn't feasible with every school that I'm reaching out to I'm using rather District level data but um we can probably use individual data if that's something you're interested in yeah once again I want to thank you for your presentation one of the questions that I have since the collection of the data is going to be anonymous the interest or the personal interest here would you be able to disaggregate the data just for our district so we can determine what that looks like the capability of the data collection yes yeah that absolutely should be possible um so what I'm planning to do is send a survey rights to each individual students um email address students teachers in my addresses um and so I'd be able to track the students data from those um based on the based on the counseling to those surveys and then you know I would code each data separately from each state separately and then I'll delete all the email addresses yes how long would it take to get the results um what is that timeline of your research to send me the results in my possible presentation in the government forward to move forward yeah um so if we were to complete data collection by the end of October will project to finish the data analysis until this particularly created each district separately and doing the identity data analysis for your District now let's just make that happening probably by the end of the calendar year without having a formal report because I do intend to move forward with the publication with the study and assuming about other schools I also get completed I tend to move with publication but by probably March 2024 um but I can get an earlier report to your districts specifically with data to our district probably by then under the calendar year okay listen I have a quick question how many do you know if you know how many other schools have you surveyed if you have that are operating within tribal lands that is kind of specific are specifically operates only on travel lines yes yes totally um but yours is the only one in tribal lands because um yeah the way I used to like different school districts is it's a random process I go state by state and randomly select the school so um you know there's no um restrictions or targeting any tribal schools um but yeah I'm looking forward regardless okay [Music] I have another question but I choose help but I find College and we saw I want once again I want to uh for public records the the approval or non-approval is completely dependent from the nation um there's 12 rules did it and as I mentioned on the correspondence the government board today may talk or decide what the fate of or the support of This research but the most importantly you need to get the support and go through the process with the nation without own automation okay and we can guide you in the process as well thank you voice suggestions and all the best of luck with the IRB uh I think that's going to be a task but I think if it were if if the will is there as much as I see it in me now then I'm sure you won't have too much issues so long as you're responding to whatever there is the request is but um anything else you should use it [Music] okay okay thank you sir all right thank you so much all right with that maybe move on to number three is our barbecue in a unified school district opening board financial report thank you because you mean president it's green yeah board members and superintendent ideas I'm going to be presenting the the Student Activities and our facility balances for July 2023 the Student Activities account had disbursements totaling 9591.63 and the um Elementary stuco had disbursements totaling 1072.90 for credit card purchases for pre-k lunch at the zoo Kinder promotion treats pizza and drinks for second grade celebration and promotion supplies the class of 2023 had disbursements totaling 8 518.73 for payments made for the senior trip including Hotel fuel Six Flag entry tickets and payment for the transportation driver the ending balance for the Student Activity account on 73123 was 93 927 and 85 cents the student auxiliary fund had no activity in July and the ending balance on 731.23 was 3949.76 do I have any questions no question I do have one more comment um in August you guys will see the um transfer for those inactive clubs into student council so I just wanted to give you a heads up now I'm going to go over the um this school 23 budget expenditures as of 731.23 a tax you will find the fiscal year 23 expenditures through 73123 we currently we are currently in the encumbrance period in fiscal year 23 that allows us to continue making payments for goods and services received on or before 6 30.

foreign Rogers or Miss Rhonda page Mrs eugetti thank you Mr Jetty all right laughs welcome we would like to welcome everybody and I'll call this meeting to order Tuesday August 8th it's our work study and brief board business meeting at 6 pm um we will begin with our presentation and discussion topics Dr McCord 2.01 stem initiatives at Quartz Hill Elementary and Patterson Elementary thank you madam president governing board members if I could have our team come on up real quick I'll introduce you guys thank you [Music] you sit there good evening everyone let me uh take you through some introductions real quick we have David Williams he is the Community Development regional manager for meta which is Facebook and Instagram then we have Theresa dukes and our executive director of Gilbert Education Foundation Mr Lucas Blackburn principal of Patterson Elementary and Dr Joan Henry principal of Quartz Hill Elementary we're here tonight to let you know some things that we've done with the help of meta as well as the Gilbert Education Foundation and the things that through their generous donations they've implemented over Quartz Hill as well as Patterson so I'm going to turn it over to David and you can get going and I've I've got your slides so you just say when all right well first yeah thank you again for the introduction uh my name is David Williams and proud to represent meta here in Arizona with our Community Partners next slide please so if you're unfamiliar with meta formerly Facebook we our mission really is to give people the power to build a community and bring the world closer together if you think of our family of apps and services from Facebook Instagram WhatsApp uh Quest 2 with the virtual reality threads a number of other products it takes a lot of computing power to keep three billion plus users connected and so about 11 years ago meta started to design build and operate our own data centers [Music] August of 2001 we went ahead and broke ground on our 17th data center globally here in Mesa well here in Mesa just down the road which is part of the Gilbert School District boundaries at the time we had committed to two buildings supporting about 100 full-time operational roles once open in May of 2022 we went ahead and committed to three additional buildings taking that employee account up to supporting 200 rolls right now if you drive by the site at Elliot and Ellsworth there's a lot going on we have about as of last Friday we had 1972 construction workers on site helping us bring that campus to life we anticipate moving into our as you'll see that that H to the far right that is our first two buildings and that we anticipate starting to move into at the end of this year and beginning to go live hosting traffic this time next year um next slide please uh overall this represents a little over a billion dollar investment as I've talked about some of the roles um one of the things that we at next slide please one of the things that we look at doing when we come into a community uh is Partnerships I'll talk about Community Action grants in a moment but some of the big things we do around programming is bringing in uh experts and non-profit Partners to come in to support our small businesses nonprofits how do you use all these resources available to you to elevate your business to get the word out about what you do to be more successful we have a big Focus around stem education which some of my friends will talk about here in a minute and volunteerism we have a number of our employees who are experts in their field whether that's in technical work math Engineers electricians HVAC Specialists who really love to talk about what they do and so I think we've already had a number of conversations about how we can get those experts into the classroom to talk about these career opportunities that are going to be coming up in their own ahead and here at the bottom is a number of our partners that over the last 18 to 24 months that we've been collaborating with next slide please uh one of the things I'm really excited about is to share with you that next month we're going to be launching what we call Our Community Action grant program we usually do this when a campus is coming close to going live and this is a set aside grant program separate from the work that we do with with our local districts where teachers or schools or local nonprofits can apply for a short-term high impact project that does one of three things improve stem education help connect people online and off or leverage technology for Community benefit so there'll be a six week window we'll be sharing that out to all the schools in the district and we hope to get a number of great applications coming in that will then award in March of 2024 and that'll be an annual program moving forward through the future Next Step so that's all I had before I passed it over again just want to really recognize the work that Joan and Lucas are doing and they're going to talk about they've really been forward thinking about how to get technology into the classroom and get students more engaged early on thinking about stem how that can apply for their own personal life in their potential academic careers and and hopefully getting into stem careers afterwards so happy to answer any questions just um a couple years ago David reached out to me and when they were building the center and he actually talked about being able to give some Grant fundings to some of our schools and right away I thought of Quartz Hill as well as Patterson just because those two schools that came top of my mind that have really embraced stem and have really incorporated into the classrooms and our kids have taken it full force as well as our staff and so that's how that connection was made so thank you for reaching out because if you didn't do that we probably wouldn't be sitting here today so thank you for that absolutely and I think this is you know just the beginning we're always we're continuing to have conversations identifying new schools new programs new opportunities to to continue to invest in in stem but also looking at Workforce Readiness and Construction And Trades and other high demand skills here throughout the state thank you anything for David Fortune over Theresa Theresa good evening just a real quick um run through Mr Thompson you're new so I don't know if you're how familiar you are with the Gilbert Education Foundation so real quick summary we were founded in 2001 um by the the administration you know that's pretty much how the foundations usually start and then once they get mature they pass off to community members and and people outside the district to run so in the last 22 years we've invested over 2.8 million dollars in funds to students staff and programs and we have five main programs our Innovation grants every year for teachers and campuses and scholarships for both staff and students Varsity letter and volunteerism program for our high school students that they can receive a varsity letter if they do volunteer service and our Shane program which helps give emergency financial assistance to families in the district as well as employees of the district when they're in in time of need and then our last one is our steam we had been stemmed we've moved to steam this year going to be kicking that off and So Meta coming and wanting to donate was perfect and to be able to really move forward some of our different initiatives Patterson we have been working with you probably the past five or six years on different grants on that on their maker space and they were kind of at least from my perspective one of the earlier adopters of that where we were aware of it and slowly been funding it so it was great to get a chunk of money and then starting to work with with Quartz Hill and get move that forward so we're thrilled with the partnership and looking to partner again and keep this relationship going and we're very appreciative of matter so thank you so let me play this little video real quick this will be a good intro to YouTube this is something that was put together at the end of last year Johnson Polly he put together our he's our videographer and our photographer and he put this together with quartz and Patterson [Music] it's thrilled to partner with meta to provide new stem opportunities to the students of Gilbert Public Schools hold on by providing tools materials and resources that has given our students the opportunity to become inventors Builders and critical thinkers the impact of this collaboration will resonate throughout Gilbert public schools for years to come shaping the lives of countless students you will go on to make a difference in our community and Beyond [Music] well done nice job so I'll start with either one of you whoever wants to go first don't fight over it now we were lucky enough thank you Mr Williams and Metta and then Dr McCord for offering the opportunity we wanted to come up with a mobile steam lab something that we could leave the classroom the kiddos could leave their academics and and whatever else they were doing on their desks and they could go somewhere else and use technology and so we purchased um you'll saw you saw the black tables and the red chairs the tables fold up so they're easy to store but they're easy to take out we can use them inside we can use them outside it's just an opportunity for the kids to have learning spaces wherever they want to go teachers can take it anywhere they want to go we used them this Summer there was this community ed had a stem camp and so we put those out there and the flexibility it gave us and for the kids to learn in different places is incredible and then we started buying tools and you saw those up there the Sphero balls are really fun until I break one um but they're tools for all ages and I think that was part of it these little Indies that are the cars that you saw in there the kids can put out their the different pads and everything and then code them through the pads so the little ones use that the bigger ones that's compatible it's a Chromebooks and then we've got circuits under there so we're still in the process from a very generous Grant it was forty six thousand dollars um that we're purchasing we have some new teachers thank you some new teachers coming on that are steam oriented stem oriented and so we're giving them kind of the gift of choosing some things that they might like like but we always think about Workforce and thinking about going forward even our Pre-K what are you going to do when you get out of high school what are you going to do for internships what are you going to do down the road so having them learn those soft skills too I think with collaboration and explaining the project they're doing we have kiddos I was Thomas Williams one child that is not very good at communication but he that he took to this and lit up and was showing everybody how to do it and I'll talk about a little girl we have Briley um who's fighting cancer right now and so I thought my gosh why can't we send these home because they're compatible with the Chromebook she has at home so she can certainly do that at home too so just the flexibility the functionality of using that so thank you for the gift you know so it really is well yes thank you Mr Williams thank you Miss Stevenson Dr McCord the the whole board uh grants like this is really what um what allows us to do what we do um and uh with the monies we we receive from meta it's really you know since I've been at Patterson we've gone it's always an evolution just like technology is like everything else we started we wanted we were doing stem education while it turned into inquiry and now it's turned into International Baccalaureate but at the root of everything and and going through and we were able to purchase things like 3D printers um iPads ozobots which are another kind of rudimentary coding um I don't want to say toy but kind of device that students are able to start to see what it takes to um you know to be someone in the to be in the computer science realm um but really it comes down to when we looked at you know because we were given kind of the palette of what to buy it really comes down to experiences and experiences are everything and and I think that as as we get further and further from the Industrial Revolution we're looking more and more at experiences and allowing the kids to experience learning it's not enough just tell them what to do I I go back to like an artist or who you know whether it's music whether it's a painting there's a lot for interpretation and with the with the devices and everything that's been purchased by meta it allows students to immerse themselves into education and then experience education and then it allows the teachers to be that innovators and how are we going to get out of these students what we want them did if we want them to experience we want them to enjoy it I think at the elementary level they have to enjoy school they have to really have a positive connection with it but the art is really using teacher Clarity and finding out did they learn what we wanted and and it's really amazing when they've learned what they wanted and they didn't even know they learned so really it comes down to being able to use everything that we've gotten which has been I mean this I'm gonna take a little I'm gonna digress for a second everything moves so quickly we're not it's not even a maker space anymore it's the inquiry lab and you know and really it comes down to where is the focus and without the generous donations of meta and the you know the the working through the inner workings of everything with Miss dudeson we wouldn't be able to do this we wouldn't be able to give the kids the opportunity to get to allow themselves to discover what a textbook would just tell them and with all the research out there knowing that when you experience it you are going to remember it and as Miss Henry spoke about those soft skills that's what they're going to take from elementary they are going to exceed expectations they are going to persevere and find their grit they are going to collaborate they're going to critically think and without what meta is doing which it's twofold I mean they're giving us opportunities but they're also building this Workforce because without those soft skills they're not going to be ready for the jobs that meta hasn't even created yet so this is the foundation of something that I hope gets bigger and bigger that all of Gilbert Public Schools is able to benefit from and uh it's just it I it's very humbling to be at the ground floor of this and see what technology can do because that's what grabs the interest of the kids and we can fight it we we can fight it we can come up with more strict uh you know reasons to not have technology in the classroom and things like that but no it's finding out how we can make it beneficial for everyone that's a part of it and don't get me wrong screen time something we have to worry about and technology is something we have to worry about but leveraging it with the stuff that not only we feel important but they're the generation of Workforce that's coming through feels important is is how we really we create this new education that needs to take us into the the next centuries so thank you to everybody for giving us this opportunity for any of these folks so I'm I'm curious how the how the program is um is run at the different schools as far as how do these tools get into the hands of the kids or the kids selected or do they go class by class or does each is it like a special everyday like a technology special every day how does it work uh we well thank goodness for and Mrs detail I'm sorry she was integral to everything that we got we have our technology educator which the district really can we I use them as as consult to get all these things so we state of the art but our technology educator has the teacher sign up their whole class it's not just one child it's the whole we have we have what we've built a steam Brewery if you will and so we have all multiples of all of these in there so once the technology educator trains the teacher in that she can go in and just say we put a Google doc or can I use those today which is fine so we kind of like a library checkout that's kind of what we envisioned so they check all that out and they can use it in their classroom so it's very easy to do once they go in and train them some of our teachers already know how to use these and so they find time in the schedule to use it because it is it's very beneficial to all the projects they're doing we do shark tank Quartz Hill and so that's something that um we had kids last year we didn't have the 3D printer they probably went over to your campus and did it but they came up with um fishing lures that were biodegradable but made them through 3D printers so that's that forward thinking that they gain from all these activities thanks yeah yeah at Patterson we did have it as a special last year as as most people know if not everyone we had art every other week and then that week when um was supposed to be cute computer special we did open up the Makerspace and have students come in we used a number of programs to allow the teachers to have a set lesson and be able to really allow the students to go through that engineering and design process and uh create the process we were very clear on it being the focus being the process and not the end product we want them to be able to adapt the engineering design process not only to creating something but also the writing process it's all it's all cyclical um this year it's really embedded into what we're doing so the expectation our students are are using the inquiry lab or teachers are using the inquiry lab to either spark interest in something give demonstrations or allowing the students to show what they know through the uh through the um the technology that we do have for instance um with our 3D printers the main goal of the 3D printers is getting to a point where the students are creating real prototypes there's a book that most students read and it's about the Iditarod you know the dog sled racing and and so the what's going to happen this year is the students are going to have a track that they have to take their their dog sled through and when they go through that there's going to be apps those is going to be all of this and honestly we hope they fail we want them to fail we want them to have to use re they want iterations and recreate this prototype because we're talking creating something from filament for a 3D printer that's pennies and so we hope it you know it'll there'll be a number of variables that has to go through and then when it fails they have to go back and look at it which is uh doing something different but expecting the same result which is very different for a student that's used to sitting in a desk and giving this information then taking a summative evaluation so really what I I don't know what it's going to look like at the end because that's the that's the Journey of every student um but the the training for the teacher comes back to regardless if they were successful or not with this Iditarod did they who can you check the boxes of the rubric of did they learn what they needed to learn um and you know the engineering design process can be just I mean you can put it in anything you want um so being able to take that on is something that they're going to know instead of dates or things like that stuff that you can ask Google they're going to be take able to take that perseverance um that that critical thinking and take it on to any number of our Junior highs whether it's the Gilbert accelerated Middle School Mesquite Junior High Greenfield Junior High or any number and be successful at that where we know they will yeah well I I just want to make a comment because I feel like um one of the things that we have to do is be so careful with our budget to make sure that we can cover the things that are really needed I mean we're just going to talk about a map adoption that's probably going into the millions of dollars so having these small grants where each campus can choose what would suit their needs the best I think that really helps the teachers and the schools have ownership and the students to have something that they're really excited about so I really appreciate the Gilbert Education Foundation for all they do because I know they do a lot and I appreciate meta for for donating that money to help us to individualize our programs a little bit because we do have to be very careful with those taxpayer dollars and so we we fund the basics but we can't fund everything in I appreciate that that's available for us to to give that little extra to the kids well I'm glad you brought that up in in addition to the donations and the grants they've given these schools they've also given uh donated 155 000 to the Gilbert Education Foundation for some stem and steam projects at the elementary that we're currently working through the minutia in terms of how to utilize that best way that impacts all of our students so stay tuned awesome thank you so much for that yeah thank you thank you very much all of you I appreciate it look at that you're done nice job congratulations thank you guys again wonderful well thank you for that that will take us now to 2.02 our math curriculum adoption K-12 Dr McCord thank you madam president governing board members if I could have our teaching and learning team come up whoever's presenting this evening they are going to talk to you about um K-12 math adoption for Gilbert Public Schools will take you kind of through the process some things that have uh we have to abide by statutorily as well as what our timeline will look like and when implementation will actually begin so I will turn it over to our assistant superintendent of teaching and learning Mr Jared Ryan good evening hold on one second sorry you were starting off great Sheila Rhonda are you guys there I'm here hi yep I'm here both are here okay sorry we didn't want we didn't want to forget about you thank you guys for calling in and obviously if you have any questions jump in at any time perfect Madam president governing board members Dr McCord thank you so much for allowing us to be here this evening joined here by wonderful team members of ours um honestly this group is probably why I sit in this position without the confidence and the people that you're working with every day it's tough to do this job and so glad to have them with us tonight in order to go through and really demonstrate and discuss answer questions but really provide a vision for what this Pre-K to 12 math curriculum adoption is going to look like for Gilbert Public Schools why it's important and ultimately what our outcomes our desired outcomes are so that being said you want to introduce yourself foreign assistant director of special education the director of secondary curriculum instruction and assessment Robert burcher her counterpart Elementary curriculum instruction assessment I also want to recognize Miss Crystal Udall is here this evening with us Weaver Crystal she is our elementary math coordinator and does a fantastic job and glad to have her with us this evening three objectives main objectives for tonight hopefully be able to provide some clarity to what this process is going to look like ultimately the first thing is to make sure that basic timelines are outlined understanding what the committee structures are going to look like there are some some changes to the Committees and the way the Committees are going to be developed and the way the Committees are going to function we want to be able to outline that for you this evening as well as discussing how the final curriculum and selection process is going to look timeline obviously is very important from start to finish and what that's going to look like all the way through rollout until we see it in the classroom so those are going to be some parts we're going to cover tonight the value behind so kind of the second thing is really what the value is and having a a consistent Buy viable standards based and aligned curriculum in every classroom across Gilbert Public Schools why is that important right and so those are some things that we're going to discuss is Miss Humphries stated earlier in the previous presentation this is significant investment significant investment from all of us from the community governing board investment and ensuring that this is done the right way and ensuring that you have the right people looking after it discussing why in terms of the following there are five kind of components that we're looking at or categories vertical alignment so Pre-K 12 ensuring there aren't gaps in student learning faculty support ensuring that our faculty members are confident and comfortable with what they're instructing each day collaboration the ability for faculty members District leadership campus leadership to work together toward ensuring that the student outcomes are exactly what it is that we're envisioning exactly what they need the fourth would be measurable targets so the targets that we have to establish that are in front of us based on information we have today and ensuring that that information we're Gathering the data we're Gathering is consistent and it's consistent across K-12 education in Gilbert Public Schools all campuses and then most importantly consistent learning ensuring that there aren't gaps in that learning ensuring that consistently across the board all of our campuses Pre-K to 12 there is consistency in the learning so the instruction and the learning and we'll discuss later how those are separated but those are objectives for this evening to make sure that there's a clear picture of of both the timeline the reason why and then ultimately what the outcomes are that we desire all right before going forward with our vision of what we'd like to do we'd like to present where we're at with current math curriculum so on the the second slide you'll see a brief history of our current adopted math curriculums and when they were adopted Elementary we've got kindergarten through fifth grade are using the math expressions curriculum which was adopted in 2012.

oh good morning welcome to come up and hello hello I'm Carol map I'm president of the booster club in the high school um happy almost New School Year I hope it's a great one um I'm here with suji Antonio she's our Treasurer member Jim and our vice president Teresa and our Super Fan over here Jerry who's sitting down there with the pink and jilyn here our super students here student body years and years so that is now finally done so again we just thank you for all of your support and uh we hope to see you in the school year that many events anything else okay sounds good thank you very much yeah thank you thank you wow any comments from the board say I thank you all for your support and all that you do for cre Monique and uh the all of the kids I mean I I know that now that we have we're spreading out our Athletics with the uh Middle School um hopefully that'll be a bigger support for the high school as well but thank you all so much yes thank you very much thank you so much yes uh thank you Carol and and your whole team the booster club this is very Noble very honorable these gifts I recall getting a a it was like a hoodie a sweat hoodie and and I wear it proudly so this just compliment what I have already that you guys mustered up and G came up with some funds to do this so it's really appreciative thank you so much all right okay next up on public comments we have Miss Bridget Simmons regarding students athlete and acknowledgement okay thank you um hello my name is Bridget Simmons Franklin and I grew up here in the school district and I'm raising my children here and my children attend this school district so hello some of your faces are very familiar some of them are not so I want to say hello um m 28th of 2022 um our boys won the 4x2 um meter relay at the ihsa championship and down in Charleston at Eastern um university illino of of Illinois um on June 7th of 2022 um I received an email well the boys received an email along with their parents from then Mr Tobias I believe he was the athletic director at the time um congratulating the boys and also saying that the boys needed to be fitted for their ring and then he also went on to tell us that um if uh in the future the boys will be given their certain acknowledgements this year on April 27th I then emailed the current athletic director to um let him know that the boys have not received their Rings nor did they receive any acknowledgements for winning the state championship down in Charleston he responded to me and said that he just received information information that the Rings were just um they were just finished and that he would get in contact with us to let us know when the boys will be receiving them um July this past July I received a text message from somebody who was here in the school basically showing me the banner that was raised over in the gymnasium over here at the high school I'm letting you all know that the boys never received any acknowledgement from the school district that they won a state championship they never received their RS they never receive they never was giving a banner they were not celebrated in front of their peers nor were they acknowledged in front of their families and I really believe that you all Rob them of that opportunity not only of that you rob the families of that opportunity as well I am very proud to say that all four of those boys they are gone off to college now um and we are extremely proud of them we are extremely proud of their accomplishments here in high school and the things that they're doing now in College um unfortunately this is something that they will always remember that they were never acknowledged for the good things that they did here in this school district my son and a one of the one of the uh other boys on the team all four of the boys was also on the football team none of the boys ever received any Varsity letters from being on a varsity football team my son played on the varsity team for four years he never received any Varsity letters so therefore my son is not able to get a varsity jacket because he never received any letters he never received a certificate he never received a medal he never received any accolades from the school district um last year my son was the quarterback and he took the team all the way down to the semifinals and once it was over it was over no banquet no pictures no Round of Applause no nothing so I just want to let you all know that parents know um the value of our children and we're going to celebrate our children no matter what but it would be very nice if the school district would also do that as well I do believe that this entire School District dropped the ball um on our kids doing this um the kids are student athletes and they work extremely hard for the school district as soon as they do something wrong you guys are quick to kick them out of school you're quick to um punish them you're quick to um you know make them feel as if they made the biggest mistake in the world but as soon as they do something good especially when they make you all look good they're not being acknowledged and that's very heartbreaking as a parent and as somebody here as well my name is on the wall at the high school um I was a student athlete here so I know what it takes to be a student athlete I know what what it takes to be a state champion and even then we was acknowledged back in 98 when I did it so I just want to let you know that that it it was very disrespectful because when coaches when these kids go out there and they give their all the coaches are the ones that get all the praise they're the ones that get um promotions at work they're the ones that get the raises the kids didn't get anything absolutely nothing my son played varsity football here for four years he didn't even get Varsity letters he didn't get anything and then he did something amazing where he all well all four of them um went to the state champ ship and they won with the Warriors across their chest we even acknowledge them in University Park all four of them are from University Park we acknowledged all of them in University Park and at the board meeting there but it would have just been nice if the school district would have just acknowledged them in some form of fashion but like I said um just an update on them they're all doing very well they're all in college um and I'm very proud of them but just moving forward I really hope that you all take the time to acknowledge these student athletes because they're making this entire School District look really really good and instead of just um acknowledging the coaches and promoting them it would be nice if you all you know gave a little bit of that effort towards the kids that's um making you all look good thank you thank you so much um uh Dr cogin is you going to have a respond for her I will okay and and appreciate it um Bridget I know you as my daughter so my second third fourth daughter and you and your husband and and many others have put so much into having our athlete perform at the level that they have and we're going to try to make right you know we're going to try to do the best we could to make this thing right I know we can't 100% make it right given what occurred but we're going to try to put measures in place to prevent this from happening again so really appreciate you coming to the board and sharing that with you with us so thank you so much all righty we do have one more board comment pretty lengthy to say the least then I have to read here all right the last name this from no oer okay this is from Miss Mary oler and it reads dear Creon School District board members and Dr koganes is dated August 7 2023 welcome back to another school year I have a few questions and concerns regarding the approval of guest rates for the 2023 2024 school year to my surprise when I saw the committee of the whole agenda it and AD mentioned pay increases for guest teachers Food Service custodians secretaries and student workers where was the increase for Gest perel professionals I quickly ma uh emailed Dr Eric I'll call him M when I noticed this in hopes that I was that it was a mistake but it wasn't I didn't responding back to him in regards to if he knew anything about me signing a letter of intent to return with a pay increase for the 2024 school year year that actually have 2034 here but then 10 I believe it's 2024 school year but he did not he told me he would look into it and I applaud him for doing so and getting back to me today 87223 with an answer informing me that I was never supposed to receive that letter because I was miscategorized in the staff information system but why was this not caught back in May when I signed this in that letter that was sent to me from Dr Gail way whan interim assistant superintendent of personnel and culture has stated that my primary assignment for 2023 2024 school year would be substitute teacher assistant and on that it stated that my rate was $91 and that for the upcoming school year my pay will increase to 65 cents per hour per start of the school year I signed this document on May 15 20123 now let's rewind back to August 2022 when I questioned guest pair professional rates to Harrison comma Lyle comma or quote Neil who at the time was our assistant superintendent for personnel and culture at the August board meeting in 2022 I asked L why guest teachers assistant PA professionals didn't get the 5% rise that the board approved and his respon to that was the guest rates for teachers assistance were based upon a market analysis rather than a percentage increase last year the increase went from $69 to $88 or a 27.5% increase based on the same market analysis this was the performance this will be performed annually to ensure we remain competitive with neighboring districts as I sit here I have reached out to neighboring districts in the past week questioning what their subg guest PE professional rates are and this is what I have found bullet ties pinone $110 a day beater $95 a day whether you are a sub teer or per professional new Linux $122 and $15 an hour based on 6.75 hour days $11.25 a day Stager $15 an hour based on a 6.5 or 6 and2 hour day $97.50 a day Frankford I believe that's School District 157 Das C Charlie that's Frankfurt 157-c Charlie $110 a day Park fors Chicago Heist District 163 $15 an hour based on a 7h hour day $105 a day mochina District $159 $110 a day Matson School District 162 $65 a day K Kei School District 111 $13 an hour based on 7 hours a day $91 an hour a day so my only question is why do the guest sub PA professionals at Creek Mony School District 201u not deserve a pay raise like everyone else as a guest guest pair professional who sub 117 days out of the 180 school days during the 2022 2023 school year I believe I deserve a raise and the other guest professional par Professionals in the creek mon School District 201u district don't we matter to the you question mark thank you for uh taking the time to read my letter and I look forward to it your response thank you Mary oie oler okay okay that concludes all of our public comments and move moving on do we have any board updates I want to say something um I know we generally don't respond to public comments but um Miss Simmons public comment in regards to Athletics everybody knows that that's something I'm passionate about it's very disturbing to hear what she said because that's why we lose so many student athletes out of the district because of lack of recognition or poor facilities or or it's a number of reasons but they all center around the same thing um we put a lot of emphasis in life on adults and not enough emphasis on children um I know being in this District my son he broke a couple of records for wrestling his name is only up there for one I had a similar experience with trying to get that rectified now some people would say well why is it such a big deal it's only this or it's only that he earned they earned it they should get recognized for it the school gets recognition cre Moni is not known for academics the most of the people that know about is because of the athletes that do these things and we have to do a better job of recognizing these athletes academics as well I I definitely agree I don't take away from that but we have to do a better job of recognizing our students period we we regardless of and I know we put some some things in place I want to tell everybody that um Dr Kagan has done a great job of putting things in place with the district ad and the ad at the middle school and hopefully these things won't fall and they'll work better with the booster club because then I learned that if they don't we give the information to the boosters then the stuff won't get posted because they don't always know those things so it's working hand in hand but it it's sad that we had to go through that um I'm I'm really looking forward to the new system the new setup um but for us not to recognize and these aren't just placers or somebody who made it to State they actually won State and if if it was so easy to win state schools like Mount Caro and S they will win it all the time because they can go pick the best of the best that's what makes it so difficult and I I just had to say that cuz we have to do a better job of recognizing our students our student athletes like the young lady said kids give four years to to coaches and and a lot of times they don't get anything out of it I mean they might get I don't know some get scholarships but most of them don't so it's just very disappointing and we and we will take care of that I agree I remember the year was it 2019 when the whole track team took State and I know you were in the parking lot just how exciting that was with all the yeah fire alarms and everything and and I think we just need to do that all the time yes so I agree well said yes yes definitely we have the opportunity to get better and we will we will absolutely thank you for your passionate comment Dr Hall any other board updates I'll mention that um Mr Brown and I went to that leadership conference on Thursday and um it was very good it was good I think the the word if you had to take any word that came out of it do you know what the word would be I I I got two I know you got two yeah I mean there were a lot of good nuggets but I think trust I I think almost every speaker mentioned trust and you're not going to be any type of leader if you don't build that trust and that was just throughout the whole meeting so thanks for inviting us and uh it was good yes uh very good and you know I it was I opening for me on some things and just me being in this position that it's about you guys here it's not about me and I I need to you know definitely take step back and and whatever I can do to keep you guys as a team and I I didn't need to do that so it it should never be about the board president up here and all what he or she can do it's about me leading the way through you guys through you we all are leaders here all of us here here and to get our objectives and our goals filter down to our one person that we hire to lead this district and that's Dr Cogan so definitely help me I need you and I would do whatever I could to continue to be a one of seven leaders here one of seven leaders here so very good very very good uh session very good leaders very good talkers couple seeds o spoke do Dr cogn Cog rice yeah the former Secretary of State she spoke live so very good well thank you to Cheryl and Maurice for representing the board there so thank you taking the time yeah I didn't think I was going to make it but I I drugg myself in there just coming back from Tucson Arizona and was wasn't feeling well at all but U Cheryl and I we we stood in in there and she encouraged me say oh hang in there hang in there and it was a good good outing all right any other public updates Dr coglin I think I mentioned at the last board meeting last week about I attended that webinar on a soup eval electronically if you can look into that Lori Grant who used to be our rep right if you can ask she said the PowerPoint presentation was available and I I thought it was an opportunity for maybe for us the next time around doing this superintendent eval that we use this electronic at least give it a shot look at it it's I think it's like 300 some odd dollars to give us a onetime training to see if we want to involve ourselves with this new process and then if we do it's like $1,800 a year but you know I think it's well worth it it's electronic version and not only only can the board use it to evaluate our superintendent but the superintendent could use it to evaluate your your administrators okay so it's a great opportunity but look into it and see if you can get something from Lori on that okay okay I will that was a a great I thought it was a great tool to to use electronically everybody's trying to get rid of the paper the paper stuff here okay no further board updates I just uh I wanted to ask about support day uh that's coming up right that's on the 12th um what time is that going to start so volunteers will get there at 8 o'clock is that correct Mr surma yeah 8 o'clock it starts at 9: starts at 9ine okay uh I got a uh invitation for a Kena but that's in the evening so I will be able to make wonderful we'll put you to work yeah for sure for sure I'm coming as well and I recruited my husband he all right good uh I I had uh somebody um online was uh asking about uh supplies and I just said the support day ELC I'll get back to you on the time so I just wanted to uh uh confirm the time that uh I should tell them yeah it runs 9 to 11 9 to 11 okay great Lely but be here early got it for us it's going to be here yes okay it's where it was last year um easy access we've got the nice big parking lot here so okay it's a drive-thru right yes all right also on the same day if your friend asked the township right the township is having something in the township parking lot on Wood Creek Creek Township Creek Town yeah I'm sorry Creek Township and that's at 10 I want to say on Wood Street yeah it's the township building on wood um yeah just a little off of exchange school supplies and stuff okay very good good doc do you mind just capturing a couple of these dates for us and just kind of sitting and out these couple days here you're talking about it I think we got University Park to send it to the board yeah send it to the board you know you're really good at that right yes every week I put in in my newsletter yes but I'll put it a special email out to capture that that was actually one of my updates today too okay you can update it than okay yeah all righty so all right there's no further board updates any you done Alex done okay last call if not I'm going to turn it over to Dr kise with administrative updates yeah I just had uh three um I was going to talk about the support day so thank you mros uh the University Park parade is August 19th that's the following sat Saturdays do I so I need to make sure that we have a headcount of we have candy and so forth so if you could email Cheryl and just let us know um how many are going to be coming again we've um we'll have our jrtc will be there our therapy dogs will be part of that as well so uh what time do that start do you um we're waiting to get some uh um I think confirmation with all the logistics but we'll get that out to you okay we had a we had a big delay in starting time last time we did yeah and it was raining so this year we hope for better weather so that's the 19th there I have it in my calendar is 10:00 a.m.

anyone change you go out and make a difference use your voice because together we are stronger thank you good evening everyone it is my honor uh to give the certificate to one of my friends Diana Ochoa um Azusa Unified School District certificate of recognition is probably present to Diana Ochoa for receiving a 2023 California School employee Association member of the Year award August 18 2023 signed by superintendent Ortega and what president Dr Serena Beau we're going to take a picture now foreign honored to present the award to one of my sisters I was also and I'm still a CSA member a retired now but I had 40 years csca in chapter um I think I'm not sure I forgot the number what is in the Garvey school district I want to say 299 but it that's azus and um yeah and I'm proud I'm proud of Diana you know it's well deserved she's a great employee she is very involved in CSEA I see her everywhere always helping out and volunteering her time anyone if anyone in need when her son went to Azusa High School she's always volunteered at the snack bar so when he was in drama David over there I see him in the corner and that's how she got her name is drama mama right she was always selling popcorn and in the snack bar and sitting everybody down she was always there her with Patricia together and now I know that I see her at Dalton or their little boy doing the same thing now she's PTA president so I I just want to let her know how proud I am she also volunteers her time with the zoo Educational Foundation she's always saying if you need anything let me know I'll always volunteer my time and you wonder where she's always at right volunteering her time but it's well deserved in this award I feel is very special there's only five um people in United California right that received the award and she was one of them and I'm proud that she put a through z in the USA on the map right on Diana [Applause] congratulations Diana um you know I I don't know a lot about you but she's been here a resident for a long time group and this is and I believe every word she said about you your character speaks volumes so um that's a big you know award and it's nice to be that it is Statewide and that you are recognizing you're here in Azusa and congratulations again thank you for all you do Diana Ochoa actually I've known you for about 40 something years now and you know all that there's many things that I can say is they're all good um ever since we were in high school you were a go-getter and you truly love our community and it shows through your work and to your family your husband and your kids thank you for letting her come out and help our district and to show the love that she has for her community not just in the district but the community as a whole thank you for that and when she's absent you know where you can find her in Dalton or you know anywhere here in the district and everything that you do I I still remember when you're a booster uh in the booster club and we would come and sell each other you know Gladstone and Azusa High booster whatever we were selling and stuff and so being able to just be out in the committee and being there for our students you put our students first thank you for that congratulations again [Applause] thank you Diana for being a dedicated first and foremost parent and Civic volunteer and classified staff leader we can't do it without you and I would be remiss if we didn't organize all the blue chairs um to reflect CSEA blue we did that on purpose so thank you so much from all of us we appreciate you immensely thank you moving to item 7.0 public comments on agenda or non-agenda items we'll first take uh blue cards for members of the public wishing to make comment in person and we have two uh Mickey Carpenter good evening Dr Beau members of the Board of Education superintendent Ortega and staff I'm Mickey Carpenter I'm director of Community Resources for the city of Azusa and first and foremost I wanted to thank you all for your generous financial support for our summer programs because of that support it enabled hundreds of kids from ausd to attend day camp and swim lessons for free so we greatly appreciate that we will be back with a full report of what occurred over the summer but it was tremendous so thank you very much we also want to share our uh appreciation for your also I think ausd has been sharing those posts so we thank you very much for that if you prefer you can also call us at 626-430-8386 as well and then finally the Community Resources Department represents four divisions and that includes Recreation Senior Services transportation and Family Services on behalf of the department we congratulate the work of the 7-Eleven committee and as the board considers the options before you just know that you have our full support for all things that increase programs and services for Our Youth and families here in Azusa so thank you very much thank you Mickey and next we have Mark Gonzalez uh good evening Mark Gonzalez I don't know if I have to give my address sorry retired Recreation superintendents have been gone for a year trying to recharge my battery um I was invited to the alumni baseball game at Glasgow high school because obviously you're making changes and I noticed that the field is named after a coach I called and Azusa High to get the policy on it you don't name fields or anything after people until they pass on but the coach is still here they named the field after him and I'm fine with that but I'd like you to just kind of see to possibly considering changing the policy to name it after a person that's still here so they can be acknowledged with their families rather when they're gone there's a coach I have in mind and I don't I know you're moving on to new things but this is the highest 40th anniversary for winning today at baseball and that's a big deal back then it isn't as water CAF wasn't Waters down as it is now a lot tougher to win it back then I didn't play for just a high so I'm campaigning for Azusa I played at Gladstone but I had to play against those guys and they didn't rub it in my face every time I see them because they they show me their Rings fine I'm fine with that but I would like to possibly if you just would consider changing the policy to changing it to a name of a person and you don't have to accept everybody I know you can take it Case by case I understand that I brought up the coach whose name back in 2015 who retired they didn't feel that and everybody and I understand it wasn't under your watch it's a new board all those things but it was still a possibility that it could happen and the person I'm going to bring up if you just consider changing the policy uh is not doing well health-wise and I'd rather do it while he's still here then when he's gone and he doesn't get to get those accolades that he deserves um and I'll bring back to that person if you do consider changing that policy and like I said I know you can't act on it tonight but I'm just saying if you would consider looking into that policy and possibly be changing uh the NBA after three years you're allowed to go into the Hall of Fame Majors League Baseball at six years the NFL it's five years I just noticed that when I called different people it was when they're gone and they don't get to get that acceptance that something's been named after that so when you retire you get different passions unfortunately this is my passion right now is just to plant a seed with you to consider changing that posture or looking into the policy is all I'm asking I know you can't act on it tonight but just consider it that's all I'm asking thank you I appreciate your time sorry for the attire when you're in retired you're in summer retire all the time thank you Mark and Lika do we have anyone on Zoom for public comment remote we have no hands raised onto thank you now moving to item 8.1 comments reports and requests by the Board of Education we'll start with board member Ariana's testing okay there it goes um I would like to we have a few weeks left should I say a week or so um I know that teachers are back in the classroom and they're getting ready for the students that are ready to come back I know Glass Stone Middle School has an orientation tonight have they had one yesterday and they have one tomorrow and we will soon open the doors for our Gladstone middle school students and I'm really excited about that really excited about a Souza high as well when they open their doors to all of our high school students and the transition I would like to take this time to to thank our cabinet I knew that for the last year they've been working tirelessly um for CS I want to congratulate csca CTA um just work in the collaboration and being able to bring this forth and I know it was a lot of work a lot of time and effort and so and there'll be some hiccups I I know but the fact that we are here now and we're ready to open our doors is pretty exciting and I can't wait to go visit the schools so welcome back teachers and for next week welcome back students and we look forward to a great year thank you thank you board vice president okay so um good evening again and I want to welcome everyone happy New Year um I hope everyone had a great summer I wanted to congratulate um superintendent Ortega this morning he received Azusa beautiful impact award it was given to an individual business and organization that has been successful Stuart in public places um just a few things that I just said about him this morning that you know it's kind of like he came in during the pandemic to be superintendent I'm like who does that right that's like the hardest time ever for all of us but he took the challenge and he did a very he's doing a very good job he has a great team that works behind him but like I said he is still the captain of the ship and and I want to congratulate him um so I went to the summer school visitation I want to thank assistant superintendent Norma Camacho and director Aaron Kramer for the tour we went to Longfellow Paul Magnolia Ellington Center I don't want it's not Center middle school anymore but it was Center High School the students are there the high school students are there doing summer school and Valleydale they had the CEO summer bridge program it was only a two weeks program and the students did so much they look so cute walking around with their little shark hats on and they had an octopus there and the fourth thing they were slapping the thing around and everything like oh my God and it was real too is that a real person but you know they they um were learning about dinosaurs and I guess animals under the ocean and it was really cute but I want to thank you for for taking on that tour um we had the summer Retreat Revisited the the vision mission and the values and goads and it was great to be included in this process superintendent Ortega did a great job as a facilitator there was 18 people that participated and represented uh represented were represented in the process which administrators Union aea csca AMA parents students people came together and discussed each topic it was great to hear everyone's input the last thing they looked over the last one was looked over was in 2015 and many things have changed in 20 since 2015 we are now in the 21st century we focused on the community parent and student survey we did we had great discussions and we did listen to the voices of the surveys we did a great job in Cecilia Ford was there with her son and it's great to hear the students you know I'm not in the school sites you know I'm making policy but I'm not there so I'm glad that we had we did have that's the first time I I believe that we always would make the statements or the goals and objectives through the Board of Education only this time we include it well Mr Ortega you know included the um the parents the students the the caca members you know staff and everyone in in his cabinet and I think was really great so um in the summer Library they all Ed uh we had a booth and I want to thank all the ladies and Christian Services that served over 200 children in the hot sun with delicious watermelons delicious meals and they really appreciate it uh last week I went to Northrop Grumman the annual leadership seminar it was nice to see everyone out of their work environment mrtega also he has the best icebreakers I think he has like the book of them or something because they're always really good you know and and you learn about each other while he puts you in teams all the time you could tell he was a teacher right put you together and then now you support together now you three together and and we discussed you know even our personal agendas and what we feel and it's really good because you learned to think about others that you didn't know nothing about and we had a really a great book it was um it was called um the great book was our profession we learned to make decisions that impact people's lives which we all do that that's what we all do so the question is do we do it with empathy do we do it with compassion well I want to stop there and you need to read the book and to go for further thank you so I just like to take another now back teachers and welcome back students and I hope that you're looking forward to the opportunities that change brings and I know with all the school mergers and things like that there will be challenges but never forget that with change there's opportunity and we need to keep that positive mindset so I hope that you know we welcome every student back and every teacher back and I'm I'm here to you know to look forward to that thank you thank you colleagues just wanted to share some of my highlights over the summer first and foremost welcome back I know um for me beginning of the school year always feels like this is our New Year's and so we're all very excited and we've done a lot of work over the summer um my my daughters uh were fortunate to attend the think together summer program which was held in concert with um District summer school so I'm really thankful that our district provides a multitude of opportunities for summer enrichment and continued summer learning um I was able to stop by national at night out last week and I'm grateful that we were able to adjust our Board calendar so we were able um to participate in National Night Out it was great to see all the Community Resources law enforcement take pictures with the trucks take pictures with all of the equipment and our our safety officers that was very impactful and the weather was very cool that night so I think we I think we lucked out um and then I I also was had the great Fortune to participate in the district Retreat for the reimagining Mission Vision Values and goals and I Echo uh my colleague here and I see a lot of familiar faces from The Retreat it was an amazing uh two and a half days of collaboration and just real authentic conversations about what we're about and where we're headed and so I look forward to having those discussions at our governance Workshop in a couple of weeks where we'll talk about those mission and vision statements with the entire board and move forward as a district for the next five years and possibly Beyond um so again I was grateful and very humbled to participate in that process as well now moving to item 9.1 comments reports by student board members we will start at next the next board meeting superintendent and cabinet Mr Ortega take it away thank you Dr Beau first and foremost um I want to send my congratulations uh to Diana Ochoa um I think um uh board vice president Yolanda Rodriguez Pena stated it but I'm going to State it once more um this is a big deal this is the state of California um and so I want to acknowledge the awesomeness of this award and how proud I am um because you represent uh the best of us in Azusa and you represent what we should all be aspiring to so thank you Diana for uh what you do for uh for our district uh number two I I want to show my appreciation to the 18 folks uh that went into uh the belly of the beasts in uh triple digit uh temperatures uh to uh Indian Wells um I'm appreciative of the students the parents uh the board members um the our labor Partners uh who were there um all I got to see was authentic conversation uh genuine conversation listening pushing our thinking um and just in awe of what this group was able to get through um like President um Dr Beau stated on August 22nd the entire Board of Education will be able to look at and consider the recommendations that came out of that Retreat um and then lastly I want to thank the 1200 voices that participated staff parents community and students around our vision mission values and goals uh so so thank you for that and then lastly of course I know it's not a welcome back for everybody some of us have been here uh but it is a new start of the school year and so just want to share that sentiment uh welcomeness and excitement uh to a brand a new year and just looking forward to a really powerful 23-24.

please join our deck and our sacks our let me say I the first to say we should is acronyms so District accountability committee and our school accountability committee so go to your school and ask about the sac and be a member of Sac we need you as this board one of the um I should say a very positive role that this board or stand this board has taken is to take the role of deck to that next level of them truly being advisors to us so I really encourage parents to join the deck the district accountability committee but please provide your time and your energy at the school advisory committee level as well so I wanted to say a shout out to all of the folks that stayed those late hours to make sure that this that everything was available to the parents when they needed it so thank you it was it was wonderful to see and it was great to see everybody at the rally as well thank you anyone else all right thank you all um next on the agenda is audience comments from when I didn't see any we don't have any okay who's CNN for today we will go on to uh 6.1 superintendent report um Dr Lydia yeah um thank you madam president member of the board um we do have a visitor um today and um Miss Deborah Bullock we have been meeting um uh you know we've been having a lot of conversation on how really after I uh and I shared with her your charge from the board to truly uh re-engage the community to really bring back a different tone I've said many many times a lot of things happened before I got there I was not even part of them um but I owned them I'll say superintendent and I know that has been your sentiment as well many you know not creative we're not even you were not even in your positions but it is our reality and we owe them in your chart charge in Vision has been very clear that we will do things differently that we will re-engage our community we will re engage families in a very different Manner and that we will redesign the way that we support our students and um so we've had a lot of conversations uh a lot of um really good conversations I'm going to live it there um because well now I need to explain why I said that uh because you know in the past we've all had experiences that make us believe or feel one way or another and at this point I think our what um I'll say superintendents in the conversation with Miss Bullock what we are really trying to do is understand that happens understand that's a reality we cannot change the past but we can certainly change the future and for us to be better today and have a better future we really need to understand where we were and and where we come from so um as part of your vision I am responding to that by adding one standing item it's going to be a short item during my updates that we're calling Adams 14 a moment in history we're going to go back to the community maybe this name will be tweaked because this is really not something that means Bullock and I are putting out of our hats this is it has been a lot of conversations uh with alumni with Ms Bullock the Historical Society really a lot of groups that are interested in just um going back to a place where we can collaborate and support our community in a very different way so um this is going to be a standing item as I said during my updates that is going to include you know a very brief story uh told by by an alumni and who is better than somebody in this community who has been committed to trying to preserve history by many actions and books and um you know efforts to to keep it alive so it could be different any month of course it's going to be different people but it could be a a picture that we display or a short movie or just an item that they bring anything really it's about um telling the story uh telling our history the way they see it and um you know started re-engaging everyone in a much different way we have discussed also how to engage community in unveiling the new buildings the names of the new buildings that the old Leicester Arnold Building I'm going to call it that way and the hands on campus uh we do not want and one of the promises to the Hanson Community this is not to forget about Hansen to forget about what happened things change our number of students you know um our enrollment you know has decreased along the years and we need to do very difficult things but it doesn't mean that we do not care that those happen at one time that those schools were alive so we have a lot of ideas uh that will be we'll be bringing forward um to you uh you have brought up some of those ideas to me my you know yourself so um that's the whole purpose of this segment and I'm gonna pass it on to miss bolo to introduce herself and tell us her story thank you Dr waria Madam president and board thank you for having me in here today and I chose the Irondale elementary school because that's where I went to school and I am an alumni of Adams City High School graduated in 1973 and um we started the Historical Society because there was nobody documenting the history in Commerce City And so there's a lot to document a lot of stories a lot of history facts but I'm going to share with you tonight the Irondale Elementary School some of you may not know it was one of the schools in Adams 14 and it was it's still the building is still there it's at 87th and rosemary so if you know where the drive-in is and you know where the fire station is school's right in the middle um it was when I went to school it was a country school there wasn't the drive-in wasn't there the fire station wasn't there the whole area was Farms basically and even the flea market was not there the flea market was all grass it was a sod farm and so it was there wasn't a lot there so it was established in the mid-1900s and a lot of the schools are named after a person a location or a street so Irondale is the location it's the it's the neighborhood and it was at one time a town it was incorporated in 1889 when Derby was incorporated and it was settled it was there was a Foundry there called Irondale and that's why they called it the school Irondale School and they actually had a mayor and town trustees and that happened in 1924 in 1926 Charles Black was elected mayor there were six other trustees and these were people that lived in the area Nettie Bruce Sebastian sebastiana palumbos palumbos were farmers they're still around um Carl Fowler the diandria's and the salmanese families the town was unincorporated in 1930 due to increasing vacancy there just wasn't a lot of movement but it still remained one of our communities one of our neighborhoods and so and the ninth so all through until the 1980s it was in elementary school and around 1980 the Colorado Gold football training Corporation or Camp it was a semi-pro football league they leased the school probably from the school district and they had their training camp there so it was it was a football training camp and then around 2000 the fish food bank was in there the fish food bank is still around it's at Our Savior Lutheran church now so it's moved to a few different locations and currently today it's a church it's ministerial palabra De Vida church and school private school and so the building it's pretty much still looks the same you can see you know both of the pictures um the uh the school right now with um Hanson was called Oneida in the beginning so it was because of the street it was on it was on Oneida Street and then Mr Hansen is why they named it um Hansen Elementary so just wanted to show those facts with you we'll be bringing different people in different alumni who can share the stories of their schools and hopefully you'll enjoy that and it'll engage a lot of people any questions that's awesome I think it was a trip down memory lane I remember being little and going to the Colorado Gold training camp I thought it was like they had tours um and then I think the city owned it for a while because when I worked at the rec center I used to have to go in there and do inventory for uh the baseball teams okay baseball yeah yeah um well CeCe still owns the um City teams I would go in there with uh Tim Moore who was recently retired and okay yeah that was much fun but my dad went to school there yeah so I know it my dad went to school there because my grandma still lives right by the Ada she lives right in that area yeah she lives on uh Pontiac Street where all the the train tracks went by so I'll buy there all the time so in 1978 they had Kids First Community Health Services it was called the Health Co-Op oh and that's where they first opened it and so we have pictures of the grand opening there from 1978 when they first Incorporated and um I remember shortly after we started working there I realized that I actually had gotten my shots there oh my gosh I think I went there before as a kid as a kid is that why the food bank was in there um I don't know because I all I remember is what I saw in our historical photos and clippings from the newspaper remember when we did our 40th anniversary I went back and I looked and we had pictures of the grand opening and then um talking to my mom she told me that that's where I had gotten some of my shots for school and I was like well what are that what coincidence that is right just there for two years it was yeah it was only there until they built um the no they were there until they got the building on 69th and 1980 and 1990 when they moved to the new building but they were in there until then so okay we can contribute to the history that's good I like it I'll add it well and this is so fun I think it's such a great and creative way to um re-engage our community and learn about the history of our city and our district well thank you I'm excited yeah thank you too thank you thank you Miss Bullock and um I think just um we just witnessed everybody else witnessed we have so many things that really bring us back as a community um so you're like Miss Bullock and I and I have been having conversations with different um committee uh community members you know as I try to get them get us back um you know we we can choose to focus on those great stories I mean I just saw the light you know I'm sitting here you know seeing the light uh in in the stories um because we are our stories and we can choose to you know Leverage this kind of conversations or or any others that we choose to write and we're choosing to rewrite our narrative and also recover that history that made us who that still make us who we are as a community so um I myself I love Antiques and stories and so I'm just having a blast here because I do and a little plug for the museum I went there um Miss Black showed me around and it's beautiful it's um it's crazy I mean like especially for people like probably most of the board generation after generation and I even looked in the phone book my Lovato side was in there but my Garcia side was very undercover my grandma was always like nope we're enlisting our number and nope we're not sharing this so it was really neat to see all the memorabilia and the museum is Free by the way so I suggest people start going over there and check them out yeah any of our students maybe do not go there we're going to bring the museum to the students uh because that is just um the whole child understanding where we are in where our you know coming to us before so thank you Miss Bullock thank you um so that is my first uh um update um then I also want to mizuvian mentioned the the fair that we have thank you Miss Bullock I'm actually attending her board meeting tomorrow and sharing some things as well um resource Fair we have a slide just I just want to publicly thank these organizations they have they contribute contributed uh one way or another um always supporting our students with backpacks resources uh just the information that was um you know very well received by our our community and um they sponsored us as I said with materials or you know food all kinds of things I'm sure I am missing some um Salud actually yes thank you this is what happens when I start naming people I always leave someone out but I like I said the other day just call them out and yell them out so that we can recognize them so salute should be here as well but I just want to I think everyone it was a phenomenal Affair we had over 1500 families or students attend this this year we had a very different system um a very different system for families flows who was very organized and we were able to even register and get information from families that has been needed so thank you team for working on that I know Mario's team and Sheila state were fiercely working you know for hours and hours so there are some pictures of preparation also Madam president and members of the board I did share with you the org chart we restructured through our um finance and budget planning understanding that we you know we're in a found some things that pushed us to look as our finances differently I want to recap to everyone there was a the basic Foundation were three elements that really grounded us on the way that we're going to be looking at the restructure of the district first was the Strategic plan in the board goals you were very clear on ensuring that our number one goal is to support our students and for that we needed to have resources closer to the students to the classrooms to the teachers and that covered under the big umbrella of equity when we say Equity I I like to to share Equity we usually go to you know what students receive or equity in Access but I the way that I see it and we are seeing it as an organization is Equitable practices for for students and adults um in every department so those were the three um pillars that on which we founded how we were going to address um the restructure we created criteria so we can explain like I said over and over in any court of law what constitutes the title Chief director coordinator coaches Specialists and managers that was not clear before there was there were an an equitable practices in the past for years and years as far as what title a position would receive what salary would be connected to that title or the responsibilities it was just uh is not as clear as to say this position gets X right because it's almost like an algorithm some positions will have more responsibility some others will have a greater scope of responsibility um so we created we created the criteria and that is how we started reorganizing uh of course this is very small print for the public but it's going to be posted and available as soon as tomorrow and I just want to share we have five main offices um three of them are focused on operations business officer finance officer and Human Resources although Human Resources you know goes to academic and to supporting instruction and and operations and we have two that support instruction in schools directly the our chief School Innovation and Equity officer and chief academic officer um we're using some of the grants for some of these salaries and moving forward my goal this year is to prepare a five-year Staffing model so that if we continue experiencing the decrease in enrollment that we have experienced since 2004 every year except one we have experience at a decrease in enrollment mostly because of the low birth in this area based on our demographers we will need to adjust right and we didn't adjust in the past so the next slide I'm not going to go under each one but there are two things that I want to call out in here in some of them you will see a dotted line though that dotted line really just um it's a visual that those positions under the dotted line are positions are directly at the school supporting schools or spending the majority of the time in the schools and the other thing that I want to to just name with or or point out with a restructure we were able through this quite frankly brutal difficult process because it was no not easy by any means um over two and a half million dollars are being re are shifting from central office and upper management to support closer to the school so we are very proud of that because it is directly aligned to to the vision to the Strategic plan to ensuring that resources are spent where they need to to be spent so um I don't know if there's any questions um or comments about the Church I have a couple and then I'll open it up to support members um I just want to thank you and your staff I know this was um very grueling very difficult um and I think the thoughtful way we went about it I mean I think you told me stories of where you were literally having meetings and that's not something you see a lot with superintendents um I think my only notes would be on the foundation part um I just want to be very clear that this is not it does not have anything to do with the reorganization order from the state board we it was really hard to find another word that would fit that correctly but I just wanted to throw that out there um and then I think last I really appreciate that we finally took time to look at positions equitably because I think for so many years we heard about the same people doing the same jobs but this person got paid you know probably double what this other person did um I think my only caution in that is um as as somebody that struggled to finish the last three classes of her undergraduate degree I I just want to make sure we're not eliminating people that are dedicated to our district or putting up that extra boundary because they don't have that as long as we're taking the holistic evaluation of our applicants um I I think that but I think um infusing two and a half million plus back to our schools and back to our students is amazing so that's have any comments or questions or questions why am I always the one talking okay okay I do I have just one um and I do apologize that I didn't send this one earlier I wanted to just send it and uh it's no big deal I just wanted to make sure that when you see the green which is the principles that there's a clear indication as to who they answer to because having two bosses at once sometimes it's very complicated and when you look at that that's almost like the visual of what that is and I know that once in a while it is very confusing that they already have enough in their plate that I hope that they don't have to decide who they need to go to every time that there's an issue because I know that that happens um and I'd hate to put people in that position so thank you for bringing that up and that is actually something that we can clarify in this before it's posted because uh certainly we did not want that confusion to be the message it's a very clean cut actually there are all principles except two report directly to the chief of school Innovation Equity officer um the two principles that report to our chief academic officer is less Arnold high school and that is because it's a very unique programming that we have there and our chief academic officer has the institutional knowledge in in background and supports because it it it encompasses so many community supports to our students at Leicester that was a a better fit for our chief academic officer than our new chief of schools and the other school that re that does not report to our chief academic Chief Equity Innovation and Equity yes the title chief of schools I'm going to call it chief of schools and chief of academics the other principle that does not report to the chief of school is Adam City Middle School they are related and by no means we want to create any any we do not want to put anybody in a position where um you know their integrity or um ethics are going to be or can be questioned so that principle of Adam City Middle School reports directly to Sheila as our chief academic officer but it is not that you know playing mom and dad or you know Mom and Mom or Aunt and Aunt it is a very clean-cut based on the skill set and of course two of them being related to each other so thank you we're going to clean that before we put it up there so we actually call the names of the schools under each I was going to say because it it's explained on here I just wanted to make once again the perception on the first one totally it doesn't clear it up as once you break it down no thank you totally so we'll separate it so we avoid confusions thank you um made me think of something else of course um I I do I'm very excited about the addition of the school Innovation and Equity Department um I think it comes at a key time especially as we implement the pre-k through six schools and start working towards schools of choice and I'm sure Dr Lydia has filled you in that we have um a really big push for bilingual and biliteracy um programming but also creating that that actual School of Choice within our district for our community um our academies at the high school we've been raving about it and our community is so excited about it so I'm just excited that we have that so thank you thank you all right if there are no other questions um let me see now I lost my list would you report all right thank you Dr Lydia lots of things happening already yeah I think I I have I had a couple and I I lost my list but I do want to um share two more things if I if I may we received information from nine news uh Kyle Clark actually they have shared with us that they every year they take one district and they sponsor a district so they have featured articles on this one district and they do fundraising for the district and they have been following very closely what happens here in Adams 14 and they mentioned for the last year a year and a half or so and they have decided that they want to sponsor us this year so they are taking them taking us under their wing we're extremely thankful we they're working through Josh gold or atoms 14 Education Foundation and so right now there is a link that they have in their website and anybody can go in they're going to have it open for a week they will be supporting the um the program that the foundation has called funding the unfunded and this is really for teachers who want to have clubs or schools want to have specific things that are not really funded as many programs we you know as districts do not receive full funding for everything uh they want to fund that so we're very excited about that we're gonna um through Josh add that link to our website as well it's only going to be open for a week so spread the voice you know in the word out there if anybody wants to donate and support um that way they can do it through that link also directly through the foundation but we are very excited about um this so thank you nine news um Mr Clark thank you for for selecting us and we're very excited about this year and changing the narrative for our students um also um um as you know yesterday was our first day so I have some um basic statistics here that I would like to share on day one I I want to say that we're working very closely with the schools and principals we're doing head count it is very important for our families to send every child to school in the past and because of how the system had been set up it's very difficult for us to even know how many students we have until after October count and we receive the final notification from the from from the state but that prevents us really from planning ahead of time for allocating funds earlier in the year appropriately so we are implementing a new way to to have our own numbers and our own um our own numbers I would say and we go class by class every school the teachers we have teams going class by class counting students and ensuring that we are accounting for every child that is showing up to our school that allows us two things number one balance classrooms if the case there needs to be a classroom that has too many kids classrooms that have you know very little students maybe allowing us opportunities to merge classrooms and still have a small classroom to free one teacher to move and that allows us just to do Staffing in a very different way and if there's any changes that we need to have them to have them you know by the end of the second week because the longer the students stay with a teacher the more attached they are and it is not fair for kids just to be switching classrooms or do balancing of classrooms you know in October so last year we had um not last year yesterday we had over 4 000 students showing up and in just one one day we had 448 new students showing today so that tells us that we know for the next few days we're going to be growing by the day but it is very important for all of us to also be sharing you know send your kids to school we are looking for them and if we start having absences we're attacking those absences very quickly because it is very important for kids to be in school so that's one uh one piece that I wanted to share we did have students being transported you mentioned um opportunity for families to ride buses we did have 16 buses going out there 12 general education for special education buses in one day we drove 913 miles around this very small geographical area picking up students and dropping them safely right now we have 2548 students that are choosing to be bus riders not every child is a bus rider many of them are Walkers or car riders and we had um we were working on having an insurance that 100 of our buses are um early to school we had cases where you know for years and years some buses have been historically late because of whatever so we're changing our routes and the way that we are tracking time on bus for kids we had just a handful of buses being late on day one that is actually very good because as we know not only bus drivers are learning their new routes but also students getting adjusted to the times and it takes a little longer pictures getting on the bus you know for the first day all that takes time and we want to honor that and have fun um so um I would say very successful first day and especially no issues have very smooth transportation of students from the old Henson geographic area the attendance Zone to Monaco so um very exciting um first day and lastly as a gift from me to you I know some of you love succulents I am forced to I'm being forced to love them my daughter is just crazy for succulents I've I'm not killing as many um as I did you know last semester but this is just yeah I know I broke one on the way here but I will replace that one um but um I know some of you love them oh you have what I may consider a bar my daughter is like you with with stickers of succulents everywhere including computer and everything so I love it just a little thing no you're not switching it for anybody so we'll see how last day um day long I hear these kind of flowers I mean uh plants they really like the this kind of light so maybe the pot is key that's it tells me this this yeah yeah I don't know I told my daughter what to buy and she told me what to buy I I kill plants I am a facial plant killer but um seriously I'm not proud of saying it although it sounds like I am but I'm not so but anyway just thank you for for what you do um and thank you for for your support because of your vision um we're having a phenomenal first week of school and I know a phenomenal year so thank you those are my updates I will say you reminded me about the buses um I was so impressed at how um the the team just knew who to call like the bus that I was on had hit a roadblock on their plan like there were some unplanned construction and they literally had the road barricaded and they talked to somebody on the radio who talked to somebody that was at the stop and they moved the barricade and let us go through and um so given the construction and everything that's going on in Converse city um the stats for the on time was very very impressive yeah get a little bit of clarification not clarification but I wanted to ask two things one is it possible to get the link from the nine news deal and have that posted on Facebook so that we could share that yeah on social media yay um and then second of all um I wanted to see if you could uh Dr Lauria clarify the late start schedule and that change because now that's on Thursdays and I know that um for some families I'm sure it's challenging because it's a it's something new and it's just challenging to start um on a late start but if you could just give us a little bit of an update on that that'd be great thank you yes uh thank you director Silvia Madam president members of the board um in fact every Thursday we will have a late start this is a way it's it's really focusing on supporting our teachers in a very different way in the past we're using Sr funds or also known as the covid funds all school districts receive an enormous amount of monies for the last three four years when we had kovid and with those funds we were able to even offer a double period for teachers a week an extra period a week so they would have a double blog once a week to do extended planning to do some PD you know just just just to do the work because we know after covet the the things that we expect in schools teachers even all of us is it's it's it's greater than than before it has always been difficult but with covet you know it just got harder so a way in which we um negotiated and agreed with our labor is to have a late start allowing teachers on a weekly basis now that covet funds are gone uh have that extra period of time during their work day to plan to look at the data to regroup students to really do a deeper dive in student work samples so that we can get better at serving our students so buses will be running exactly two hours without one hour and a half and it's just too complicated if bus will go and pick them up at 705 on Thursdays it's going to be 905 exactly two hours later uh that also means that for some families they will want to bring their kids earlier bus will not run earlier but if they choose to bring their kids to the school schools are working internally to offer opportunities for before care for students we know this is going to be a need especially at the elementary so we are working there's training for for paraprofessionals for individuals we started working with some of the outside organizations as well but the difficulty with that is that we really did not know how many parents were going to choose to do that although we send surveys we know you know we know we're gonna know better on day one on how many show up so we're ready for them schools are ready and we will be adapting in in shifting as the need you know tells us that we need to do so we're monitoring very closely is every Thursday and um and then we will be engaging the community once we have a rhythm to in in teachers to um you know determine next steps do we want to continue uh we know next year uh keeping sixth grade at the elementary level will also need to look at start times for the schools you have shared before high school or the older kids were always later because they would support um the younger kids and we have it backwards for some reason but also all the research that we as a as a district have been looking at for the last year and a half to be quite honest of um the research and the benefits of having the teenagers sleep a little longer as well in the benefits not only cognitive benefits but also social benefits because they're more rested they're less cranky and uh so let's fight let's fights would happen um so we're looking at all that and we will be you know bringing a recommendation in proposals later in the fall because these are things that our families will need to adjust and we want to give you know as much time as as we can to to adjust if we if we go to change start times also to support a late start so I hope that explains it a little better yes and just one last thing so if a family would like to take advantage of those um that before school care um before Thursday who do they need to notify directly with the schools the schools have been uh you know reaching out to families they should have been hearing from them especially especially Elementary um because we know some of the older students are just happy they can stay a couple of hours or one more hour in bed but um they should have been receiving information if they are enrolling just recently or registering go straight to the to the front office or call the office of their schools they have information there thank you the great questions uh directors to be bless you those are um that's what I've been hearing from our community so I think that's helpful um it prompted a couple of questions of course on my part um we I know we had talked about providing transportation for our Lester Arnold students um since it was farther do we have buses for them in route and do we know how many students are taking advantage of that how many students I don't know have to bring that to you because I have the total amount but I about Ed is available okay because of the proximity now and the walking distance that we have um you know from lesser in the high school less Arnold students now have equal access to Transportation should they need it or choose to to use it they go with the high schools route and they're dropped off and they just you know walk to under the bridge to the schools so now they do have options how many students are taking advantage of that I I can share that with you because and my last question um I know as board members we always actively recruit students if there are late registrations is there information available on our webpage so they know who to contact to register and are we still accepting registrations at this time we are accepting registration that any time uh new students enrollment former students come in to re-register or to say I'm here I'm back and yes we we have it we actually met with principals today just to clarify the process streamline the process close any gaps in the information that may have been received differently heard differently any family at any time can go to their schools right now because school is starting we are shortening the amount of time or the window from when a family shows up in the first day of school it used to be you know no less sometimes 48 Hours sometimes even longer we regrouped very quickly today after we heard some information and things that we're trying to streamline to benefit our students so any family that shows up in the morning a child will be processed very quickly in a matter of hours they should be able to stay that same day at the school and if they show up in the afternoon then it will be the next day but no longer it's going to be I'm gonna wait for XYZ we want students in school we need students in school in once they are in school we'll continue working with the families to you know to get transcripts for examples or you know anything that we might still need but yes we are you know accepting students at all times and very excited because academies are very excited for our high school students so um the academies are also open all all of our 8th graders selected a an academy last year our new students you know were having orientations for them so that they can also choose an academy sooner than later that's wonderful thank you all right any other questions thank you Dr Lydia great update and great start to a new school year yeah uh next on the agenda we have uh business item 7.1 um very quickly I failed to follow our Cadence um we had agreed as a board to introduce new policies at a study session and then where we can kind of hash it out talk about it and then introduce it so I move that we table uh 7.1 the first reading of educational Equity policy the educational Equity policy um we'll first cover it at the upcoming study session and then I'll have it again on the September board meeting if that's okay yes for the first reading if you need us to I need a second yeah second I believe so correct or did you make the motion I made the motion yes yes I'll second thank you uh Ramona roll call please Mr almador aye Mrs Estrada aye hi qo um next I would like to introduce consent agenda item 3.2 which we moved off consents and it's about the board Education meeting calendar and posting um I wanted to ask a couple of questions of you guys and then I I wanted to open up for discussion um first I know we had talked about whether or not Tuesdays still work for all of us do we want to keep them on Tuesdays and um I also invite Dr Lydia to provide input about staff like does this Cadence work um Lucy I would like to uh and I think I mentioned this to to before um I would suggest that it would be good a change especially with all the changes that we're going through as a district right now to shift it a little bit because there's a lot of parents at least for us that have been here for years we were also on Deck but a lot of the excuses like I can't do it on Tuesdays because of this um it would be a good shift to change it from from Tuesday to another day and I would suggest Wednesday or Thursday and perhaps uh discuss it with the doc that maybe we could trade off days because Wednesday is like the middle of the week so I would I would recommend I think it would be good for the district and give other opportunities for also businesses and again I not only for myself but also with the work that a lot of us do it's kind of difficult for a lot of the community to show up you know like it would be awesome to bring him on a Friday night you know what I mean or uh Thursday night or Wednesday you know something different because we've been doing this for like decades so long that it's like stagnant and sometimes we got stuck in this day why why can we shift it around you know so I mean that is just a recommendation that uh change is good and I see a lot of change happening in our district and it's groovy uh I think it's really awesome and I'm honored to be part of this board and again I won't forever I'm humbled and thankful to every one of you guys for uh again choosing me to be part of this work and bring sustainability to our uh communities and to our parents and um yeah so I think that it would just be another up opening opportunity for more of the businesses and the parents because those are the people that when we think of community engagement the people more of the people that we need to get involved right so yeah this is I would I've been wanting to share and uh ask of this yeah if it's a possibility um board members I know this is probably the first time we all work during the day so is there another day of the week that works better um this Tuesday so I think my only things we've been doing that my only thing would be if we look at like our committees that we're part of to make sure it doesn't conflict because we can't I don't want to have them on days where we have to be in two places right so like especially if we know when those committees meet I would really you know try and work around that um just to make sure because you know maybe it's a Tuesday because everything else is taken and we have stuff going on uh you know that's that's my thing is I mean I know Monday's City Council you know Wednesdays are DAC you know there's things in there that we know I know some of them you know me odds and ends in the mornings but to make sure we're not conflicting with any of the stuff that we're in neither just so that we can make sure we can represent our district at those as well yeah that was going to be my concern at least for this year is the fact that um you already have like graduations continuations you have things that are being done at the school level around the meetings that around us around what we're doing um plus I already have my year scheduled for my work as well and a lot of the other committees I'm on around I've done it around the work that I do here I often tease and say I need my day job to keep my night job and this is my night job and so it makes it a little hard for this year but I think it's a consideration I just don't know how many other what that domino effect would look like if we change it now at the beginning of the school year for the remainder of the calendar that's already been approved I don't know I just to me it's um I don't know it's I'm okay either way um I think a preference would be a Wednesday for me because it's mid-week but that's when we have deck and we've been working really really hard to try and they've been working really hard to get people um to participate and I know that but some people they've already advertised the whole year of their Wednesday meetings yes that's why I'm saying that would be the only uh drawback but I think moving forward maybe for next year it would be a good conversation to have like in May and say what would that next year look like but that's just my opinion because well and it'll build into our conversation when we consider the school calendar for the next year as well okay and then I guess Yes mine is I mean does it have to be the second Wednesday Tuesday second or the fourth um well that kind of I have I have a whole bullet list of questions so I have some other questions so that I mean that's my question right yeah right so that's why okay so for now I think I hear we'll leave it for Tuesday and then um bring it up for further discussion I will say um to honor what you just said Lucy I think if we um push on our initiative to connect with our community and our owners our students and our parents and um we can schedule those on other nights and then it allows us to keep the meetings and study sessions about the actual work and hopefully we'll be able to engage with community members because I think of when people show up and they make comment or question things there there are things that should have been addressed in a different way I guess as we move towards policy governance so we'll keep that on there um my next question is we now have an October break so um I think we need to adjust our October uh study session and meeting because right now um the break is the second week of October so that 10th would be when we had proposed to have a board meeting and the district will be closed so I don't know if we want to consider moving it to the week prior my only caution with that is it's parent-teacher conferences and we have a lot of parents here so I would propose that we shift it later to say we have our board meeting on the 17th and then that poses another problem because that would put our study session on the 31st which is Halloween um why can't we just do back to back weeks we can totally do that as well yeah at least for October at least for October I I would go for that one yeah okay so we would move it to the 17th and the 24th yes yes okay they don't feel like being here on Halloween well no and I I love finding out Halloween that's or candy that's my favorite part see in the costumes yeah um the next one is uh we have a February break now and February it's the same thing so um our second week again will be parent teacher conferences and then um our fourth week first daddy session is okay so I so are you saying the second week is the break or the second week is conference second week is parent teacher conferences right so why don't we do it on the first week of February our regular meeting on February 6th right okay and then leave our study sessions I would just leave it for the 2017 27th because that's yeah right yeah that's not an issue for the late one to have that study session and in March we typically only hold one meeting and no study session due to Spring Break um but now that week adjusted so it falls on the fourth week do we want to just leave having a meeting on March 12th and no study session or I guess I would say we should meet it around I think we look at it in February or somewhere around there if it's a need yeah see if there's a need for it and I think we should do it right have it awesome and then may um I personally would propose that we adjust May a little bit and we can totally maybe do this down the line um I just think that week that we have a study session then we have both continuations and we have both graduations that's all for our staff too yeah it's it's a lot so I you don't like being here for the whole week oh I'm trying to be considerate of our staff but no it was it was very fun but very exhausting yeah um do we do back to back that month too I mean I always say we should look at it towards April because we'll get the May schedule to kind of see what kind of continuation looks like what everything's kind of looking like for us there and then we can kind of decide right if it's a need like we can have yeah instead of not to have a study session that one or if we push it to like the beginning of June right after everything kind of dies down because I mean we'll have you know all of our continuations through elementary through middle our high schools all towards the end of May there so you know it's a it's a two-week process of stuff and top of any events that they have that we're invited to I mean I think I went like three weeks straight at being out of school every night so I mean it's not that bad okay just gotta do it we can also consider Madam president um members of the board um to have in those on those um dates business and study session at the end based on the conversations we had the last month or the last meeting last year the study sessions we're going to be using those and taking advantage of that those sessions to discuss the reports and the El so on those months we could have it back to back as well or um the same night it was going to be a little longer night but you know we can look at the um at the reports that are coming for the following month and see if there's any to have it afterwards okay okay yeah we'll we'll accept the way they are now and then just have a discussion as the date approaches um and I think um along the same lines I I would invite us to have a discussion about July um there's so much going on in the districts um even if it's just a temporary thing to maybe consider next year given with the 5B options I just anticipate a lot of decisions um so that we can Empower staff to make sure they have time to get things done but also be respectful because I know it's like everybody flies The Coop that's the one time anybody gets to do anything personal so I want to be respectful about that as well but I also just think giving given 5B and then given the transformation turnaround urgency I just feel like we need that little extra touch base before the school starts well and I think we could do that towards the end of July because then we can kind of approve everything that's going to be meet our staff that's coming if we have you know whatever we have so we have it all in July so by the time we meet at like the resource Fair we're not going oh who are you you're new I don't know who you are you know kind of that that you know the end of July when everyone starts to report at least Administration reports towards end of July there and be able to just kind of meet them and get the approvals that we need and if we need a study session for the meeting we have everything in line I would do something like that awesome so it should be determined but I wanted to throw that out there that's great um all right Ramona I wrote down the changes and I apologize if you do if you didn't get them um with with that I would like to um motion that we approved the agenda approve the amended I can't speak anymore uh 20 23 24 Board of Education meeting calendar and posting location oh second Ramona roll call please Mr Amador aye Mrs Estrada aye Mr Ms Lovato aye Ms Molina I miss Zubia I thank you um next we moved consent agenda item 3.6 approval of the boys and girls metro Denver Adams 14 contracts um I know we continuously talk about pushing ourselves to make data-driven decisions and I personally would just like to learn a little more about how many students use the service in comparison to how many we pay for in the contract um I'd also like information um to know how and if they're going to be able to support our students during our new uh breaks in October in February and in Spring um and Joe you're probably going to kill me but I I think I do want to point out there um if anybody digs into information as much as I do um with the ongoing battle that we have going on with you perhaps they did have their um Charter application approved by CSI expedited and um they did include in their application that they want to use the Boys and Girls Club so I just want to make sure that we're um putting our best foot forward before we sign that contract so with that I would like to make a motion that we table Madam president oh I'm sorry yeah just really quickly since it is public information that um it appears that you prep is Slow Rolling any type of opening of any school because of the litigation that is pending before the Denver district court and we received word from the Denver district judge just hours ago that he wants to have a hearing on um on this matter by next week so we'll have a better idea of of what's going on but I think that uh you're you're absolutely right and and raising this questions about what you prep is attempting to do at the Boys and Girls Club while this litigation is pending wonderful thank you and thank you for fighting for us Joe um awesome so um I would like to make a motion that we table this um pending what we hear from you and um our staff about if we need to table it to um later in this month or to September um I'm not sure about the timeline but I think there are trigger points Madam president that we have 30 days to respond to uh and this is all once again public information we have 30 days to respond to the Boys and Girls Club proposal which was provided to us I believe July the 21st yeah so so it's it's tight but uh we'll send a letter to the Boys and Girls Club to let them know about uh well we'll be asking the questions that uh that I wrote down and then also um asking them about um what they received from uh from you prep at this moment and notify them about the litigation okay okay well thank you so do I need to make a motion just to table it and um that would be appropriate okay I moved to table of the boys and girls metro Denver Adams 14 contract oh second any further discussion Ramona roll call please Mr almador aye Ms Estrada aye Ms Lovato aye Ms Molina aye Ms Zubia aye great thank you uh next on the agenda we have 8.1 Board of Education new business discussion um colleagues we've received two requests for sponsorships uh the first is Kids First Healthcare back to health fundraising breakfast um I believe this is the first time they're holding the event and it's scheduled for September 14th 7 30 to 9 in the morning and it'll be held here at Adams City High School um I proposed that we sponsored this event at the silver level at 1000 which will include our district logo on event signage and on the event invitation as well as on the kids first website it also includes a half page ad in the event program um board members comments questions are you um up for that or do you want to adjust it or do you think we should have the money to sponsor no okay okay with that it says Lucy doesn't want to uh okay well and they did um sponsor and contribute to our resource fair and support our students so I think that's awesome Ramona I think we are good um with the Thousand if you don't mind um why don't we have that as a form of emotion and okay do it yeah of course um I would like to or I move that we approve the silver level sponsorship for the kids first Healthcare or health back to health yeah Kids First Healthcare back to health fundraising event a second Ramona Rocco Please Mr almador aye Ms Estrada aye aye Ms Lovato aye Ms Molina hi Ms Zubia aye thank you um next we have another request for the annual breakfast of the Early Childhood Partnership of Adams County um lovingly known as epac in the community it's to be held on September 27th from 7 45 to 8 45 at the Adams County Weimar Dome last year we supported the breakfast at a silver level sponsorship which includes recognition in the events program prominently displayed displayed in the table and on the slideshow as people enter and we were announced in the formal presentation the silver level sponsorship is 750 dollars um I'd like to entertain emotion or could I is there a way that we could equally give them the one thousand dollars I mean they have been providing a lot of services to our families at Central through some of the classes that they've been providing I think that I don't know I'm just putting it out there if you guys think that I know they're asking for the 750 but Ramona do you know do you have information about the other sponsor levels I don't I think um and I did I apologize thank you but if not I'm fine with that I'm just I mean we just voted for a thousand for kids first and I think edpac has done a lot as well for his community um I I would second a thousand dollars so we can keep it equitable is that a proper motion or do we need to uh there was no motion made so oh I would like to motion too I'd like to make a motion to um increase that amount to a thousand dollars for ecpac for their sponsorship for their um breakfast I second that any further discussion board members all right Ramona Rocco please hold on just a second okay sorry who seconded it um I did okay um Mr almador aye Mr Estrada aye Ms Lovato aye Ms Molina fine Missouri aye all right that passes um last I do have one more item um I have been working on the ccura board which is the Commerce City urban renewal Authority board um their meetings are held on Monday and I um I I would like to um I've had discussions with James um I would like to nominate that we appoint director Amador for that position moving forward um do I need to make a motion to to appoint him or how so yes you do uh since the other committees are appointed by motion okay um I moved to a point uh director James Amador to the CC Ura may I have a second second any further discussion I I think really quickly accept oh yes do you accept yes thank you I will absolutely work with you um catch up to speed and work through this transition I just think um yeah I have a lot going on and I I was on uh line until past 11 for city council last night so thank you for taking this on no problem all right uh Ramona I think we need to send official notice over to their director if you don't mind doing so yes we need to vote I have a quick question on of course so I how do we get come up with this committee list how is it because I know there's a lot of more like everything's important here you know some are like but uh there's like more important ones out there that I know I'm part like through the city and the counties and right so I'm like and some of them that I'm on like area boards has not met or are we able to recommend more committees absolutely better uh just make sure that the meetings don't fall on Tuesday as as we um I believe in October November maybe December when we reconstitute our board after the election but I think we're all very open because we've all served in these roles for a number of years so if you have an interest in a specific school or a specific um organization I think you just talk to the person that's on there like I kind of strongholded uh James and said hey so we batted some in the past or are you yeah are you wanting to add some director Molina because you can we could do both yeah you can add some that you couldn't add in on it and send that prior like yeah or some that you just need us to discuss yeah why not yeah we do that at our study sessions so if you give us you know I was just wondering how it was created yeah I I think if you don't mind um letting Janet and I know like of new ones and then we'll work with Ramona to get it added to the agenda if you have things that you're interested in or already attend and want to make that District connection sure I think that'll be awesome yeah can I make a suggestion um for our study session if that's going to happen can um we just get like I don't know if we need to get with Ramona or if she can find like an explanation as to what each of those consist of because they think a lot of the community members would like to know what all where we are and yeah why are we participate in them um I think it would be very important to actually have like a some type of explanation as to what it is what what our role is I would love to see on our um when we redo the website just to I know we've asked for a number of years under our bios to say this person sits on this board and have that link to where that is yeah because we do a lot and and I think we we need our community to know all right sorry everyone are we convoluted um everything again thank you I think we're ready for roll call sorry yep Mr Amador hi Mrs Estrada I Lovato aye Is Molina aye Ms Zubia the last or not last but next uh is 8.2 Board of Education committee reports does anyone have a committee report um I know it was summer so actually can I go to the board discussion still I have a couple questions about something I want to bring up yeah so let's go back I um I would really like to take a look at our dual Language School of DuPont to make sure that the way we are promoting our immersion classroom there is correct um because what you know we we're promoting it to teach you know to teach our non-spanish speakers Spanish because they're learning in it 90 of the day and I know looking at the class currently the the kindergarten class there most of the kids in their native language is Spanish so I'm not sure we're promoting that currently correctly of how we want it to work um and I just want to take a look at that because my wife works at an immersion school when it is absolutely not built that way and I think I think we have to look at that program if we want it to work the way that we're wanting it to work towards our district I think we you know we have three three kindergarten classes that we have in English Spanish and then the immersion classroom but the immersion classroom is filled with majority Spanish speakers and I think that's not how we want it promoted so I I would I'd really like to see how we're how we kind of promote that and how we're supporting that school for that um because I think I think it's a great program but I think we need to do it the right way I think we're dropping the ball on that uh I think um it would be appropriate to make a motion to maybe direct Dr Lydia um I I too Dupont has been my school and I also worked a number of years in um delegmage immersion schools um K-12 and higher ed and they they have great examples here in Colorado I know we based a lot of our higher ed programming on um Escuela de Guadalupe and they did like one week in Spanish everybody from the custodian to the principles spoke Spanish and then switched over to English the next week um so just maybe if we can re reinvigorate or yeah just look into how we can listen to that programming yeah okay we're doing update anyway yeah so emotion Dr Laria to look into it you don't have to move that you could just be a director yeah yeah and I know we have some other schools out there like there's a couple there's some really good ones in Aurora that they have there's there's a couple academies out there that teach French Mandarin and Spanish like they teach all three and they started at kindergarten to eighth grade so I mean there's a lot of way that they're promoting that yes we have um different although we have four schools that offer bilingual programs we have different programs within so we'll bring to either August or September study session a breakdown an explanation of in description of the four programs we have in start discussions of what makes sense for us and how we're going to start moving forward um with expanding or changing tweaking whatever works mainly the expansion because I did hear even at the back to school night how disappointed some parents were that they would show up to school thinking that it was going to be bilingual because we do have 90 Latino in this community they just assume that all our schools had the bilingual programming and very disappointed to find out that was not the case so I think uh as part of our goals we've talked about this from the very beginning that we would love to have the whole District move that direction to be able to have an expansion of our syllabi literacy opportunities for more students so thank you I think that it's it's time that we have that conversation awesome and I'll make a note on that one and so it's not only addressing or looking at dual language programming but also bilingual which we'll dig into at our study session but I did include that in our educational Equity policy okay great thank you anything else before we move on that was the new discussion that was new discussion that was new business items so if you want action no I thought we were doing the updates I was just double checking that we had no further okay oh yes uh director zivia yes so I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who bought peaches from rotary so as one of my um uh committees which I love is being a rotarian uh from the Commerce City Club and so as a rotary member we do a lot of fundraising activities so thank you to items 14 and everybody who participated at the golf tournament because we fundraise for our shoe program that we usually provide in December for the families here of Adams 14 students and we take them shoe shopping so Not only was the golf tournament for that but so were the peaches that we peaches and pears fundraiser that we just recently submitted our orders for so I wanted to thank the community that helped support us to be able to help support the students in a different way which is a fun way so I just wanted to say that even though summer was here our rotarians keep meeting and keep doing the good work in the community so thank you and our report for DAC tomorrow is our first meeting here starting at 5 30 so they're kicking their ear off as well so they'll have their first meeting here so if you're available to come Dak will be here at 5 30 tomorrow for their first meeting of the year um uh I want to thank uh directors Estrada and Amador and also our football and wrestling coach Jared Aguero we were able to participate in said uh rotary's uh golf tournament and that was the first time I played golf in my life um I think Janet yours too so thank you to director Amador and Jared for coaching us and um we sadly came in dead last but it was a learning experience and we had lots of fun and it was in support of our students it was it was for a good cause so thank you and and I will say it was it was just great to have that um uh opportunity to meet with our community members our business owners and and just make those connections I'm always amazed at how many people uh director amateur knows or is related to but um lots of fun um and then I also want to quickly give a congratulatory shout out to director Zubia so I don't know if everyone knows but um she is going to be recognized at the Latinos First Foundation uh Trailblazer and unsung heroine recognition luncheon in September so congratulations and I'm probably going to crash the party just so you know I'm gonna be there to support and yeah the ticket information if we're here do we have to give a donation no it's yeah it's uh you have to sponsor yeah you have to purchase a ticket or you can't afford that kind of money account yeah well and and maybe that's something we could talk about because um I know Latinos first has a great scholarship program so if we do decide we want to sponsor and we want to get our district involved in their work then why not yeah they give a lot of support so they're they're sponsorships though [Music] um let's see I think the lowest one is emerging leader sponsors 2000 and includes a table for 10 guests so maybe maybe yeah um 2000 is there lowest we would have to pay two thousand dollars yeah or individual tickets are 200.
