foreign [Music] and welcome to this uh um Bergeron briefs as uh if you as you may or may not know these are all designed as 15 minute uh question and answer or other site or or other format segments so as to allow you a senior or you who've got a family member who's a senior to understand in more depth a topic that I really can't or don't have the time to discuss in depth in the course of one of my seminars because my seminars on you know various topics you know talking about my friends Frank and Mary uh tend to deal with a whole bunch of stuff so my friend Steve Pepe uh I have known for years and years and he is an attorney uh who works uh at a reverse mortgage company yet again yesterday I was talking to somebody about a reverse mortgage and they said oh we'd never do that they're going to take my house and I was like oh so see um I thought that I would do this with Steve I try to point everybody and I'm going to try to point everybody to this Bergeron briefs episode so that they can get a sense of how reverse mortgages work so Steve first of all thank you very much for coming on I really appreciate it Arthur thank you for having me I'm thrilled to be here and and and so so I know that you've been working with language for quite a while can you just give folks you know kind of a 30 second brief background about you sure so I uh live in Milford Massachusetts with my beautiful wife Kerry and I as you said I am a licensed attorney but I'm not actively practicing Laura anymore I made a career change about 18 years ago over to the reverse mortgage industry because I just saw what it was as a product what it was doing for people that wanted to take my skill set uh residential real estate and Estate Planning and use it this way so I've been in the reverse mortgage industry for over 18 years I am a former reverse mortgage counselor trained and certified then by the AARP Foundation used to work as a staff Attorney At a non-profit in Stoneham Massachusetts but um that's a little bit about me I help homeowners from all around the Commonwealth and even some other states who want to access that home equity better cash flow thank you and so this isn't an ad for Steve Pepe I just want to tell you excuse me that he's dealt with a lot of my clients and they've all been very satisfied that's everything that I know about Stephen that's great so Steve so I'm going to talk to my person who I talked to yesterday right who who so their situation I'm just going to kind of use this as a situation so you can kind of talk about reverse mortgages right so they're older right and they are um uh they've got kids they've got limited savings their income is okay because they've both got retirements they both worked in in for government jobs right um but but and they have they have a house that's worth about six hundred thousand dollars they're like 80 in their early 80s um and they've got a mortgage they've got a mortgage right now that's uh like a hundred thousand dollars but they're paying a very high monthly payment because it's an old First Mortgage on which they are still making big payments a lot of which is really you know repayment of principle but you know and they're able to meet the cash flow but it just makes it you know tighter for them right right so one of the things that they were talking about was you know how do we kind of deal deal with all of this we don't have a lot of cash set aside we really want to stay in our house right we don't want anybody to take our house right and and and for typically folks you know what they'll know about is what what used to be called a home equity home equity what is now called the home equity line of credit or a HELOC which they would get from their local bank right and then they've seen the occasional ad for a reverse mortgage and heard something from somebody and that's what they know so so can you talk to folks talk to folks about you know in this situation and then we can talk about others if we have time but this is the classic situation and I hit it a lot what what what should people be thinking about in terms of comparing either staying what they're doing right now or getting a HELOC or getting a reverse mortgage sure so uh you hit it on the head are in that that is the classic classic scenario that this program was designed for by this program I mean the the reverse mortgage program federally insured insured by the federal housing Administration that was created during the Reagan Administration so if these folks were to just keep doing what they're doing now but you keep plugging away sending in those monthly mortgage payments like I send to my mortgage lender but I'm still gainfully employed and working they are retired and their income is fixed so it sounds like they're doing okay right now let's say this is Frank marriage but throw in one life event into the mix throw in a spouse dying throw in a spouse getting sick and having increased in-home care costs throw in both of those things throw in a major home repair or changes that need to be to be safer all of a sudden that plan that they've been treading water in is suddenly unsustainable Something's Gotta Give right they're on a fixed income and they have savings that are slowly being depleted and they're living longer and they want to stay where they are if one of those things I mentioned in in most common lately is the In-Home Care situation right habits they're gonna they could potentially jeopardize their housing because they might not be able to afford their monthly mortgage payment or they might not be able to afford their real estate taxes and that's a big problem as well right so they jeopardize their ability to one remain in that home two live I'm not talking about a lavish lifestyle just a comfortable retirement be able to go out to eat now and then just not laying awake at night worrying about money so that's where the reverse mortgage comes in because if they were to knock out that traditional mortgage with a reverse mortgage what it would do is put an end to that principle and interest payment that they're making every month that goes away because that mortgage is paid off and replaced with a reverse mortgage and guess what big shock to a lot of people the lender doesn't become the owner of your home right you're still the owner of your home or your trust is still the owner of your home but you don't have a mandatory mortgage payment that you need to make anymore so I'd be pointing out to Frank Barry your principal and interest payment goes away so think of it like you just gave yourself a raise by whatever that dollar amount is say that's nine hundred dollars a month or thirteen hundred dollars a month that's significant over time not only can you have a comfortable retirement but then you might be able to start replenish the savings okay so in addition to knocking out that mortgage payment they also will have access to more funds through the reverse mortgage that they don't have to take right away nor should they unless they really need to but they can have that safety net implementational line of credit there for things like paying off credit card debt paying off car loans new roof on the house the in-home care that might be inevitable right that isn't the medical care um that Mass health or Medicare could pay for but is the other stuff the cooking the cleaning the shopping the housekeeping and all of that that you're paying on pocket for now if they were to go the direction of a home equity line of credit or a HELOC I would argue and it's my opinion that's the most dangerous move that they can make and unfortunately that's the move that their Banker or mortgage professional is more than eager to fit them into and it's a very perilous move and I would not have a very careless move because then you're taking someone on a fixed income and you're saddling them with a new mortgage payment that they have to make that they always sell it as hey it starts out as interest-only payments for the first five years the first 10 years but then guess what then it graduates into what they call a fully amortized payments of principle and interest and you're expected to make that payment at a time where you're on a fixed income and your savings of twindled even more not to mention those are adjustable rate loans and so your monthly payments even if you're in an interest only payments could go up and up and up very hazardous move for someone like that to get a HELOC but there are too many bankers and mortgage companies eager to set you up into one and I'd argue it's it's dangerous the reverse mortgage eliminates your mortgage payment gives you liquidity for other funds for other needs as you age you own your home fully insured by the federal government say what you will about the federal government they do very well with this program they've got it right there's a boatload of Consumer Protections designed to protect Frank and Mary so they're not going to be swindled or taken advantage of and it's it's just the best way to set them up for a more secure so so just just get into one piece of the Nitty Gritty because then inevitably when you're talking about reverse mortgages the the immediate suspicion is this is too good to be true what do you mean I don't have to make any payments because that's why people think that you know that somehow the reverse mortgage company is just getting their house because mentally they're like how else is this going to work yeah so so just kind of talk talk me through that so this these people they get a six six hundred thousand dollar house say they got a hundred thousand dollar mortgage right so they're gonna need to borrow enough to pay off that mortgage so they're gonna need to borrow enough to pay for any of the you know the closing costs and all that jazz on the reverse mortgage so now you know from the day that that starts there's interest accruing on that money because they just borrowed some money say they borrowed 100 they just borrowed like 120 000 right so now now comes the end of the month and and and there's no bill so what happens to the interest that just accrued on that money yeah sure so it's Consumer Credit it's a loan so your radar and that interest is charged on the money that they've borrowed so let's say they borrowed 120 000 a month ago is by they get a statement in the mail it's not a bill but a statement and they're gonna see one month of Interest has been charged on that hundred and twenty thousand dollars that interest they would charge gets added into the balance of what gets paid back in the future when Frank and Mary don't live there anymore when they die and when they both move out for more than a year for a health reason or they sell that's when the 120 000 and that interest gets paid back the analogy I use Arthur is a tab at a restaurant second month comes by they get the monthly statement there's interest charged on the first hundred and twenty thousand and also that interest that accrued on the first month so more interest added into the balance the tab is growing and growing and growing over the months and years that they lived here and so they're going to see a rising loan balance over time long-term history of real estate appreciation is that Homeless gradually keep going up in value too but when they die sell or move out for more than a year that's when that tab is is settled that's when they're paying back however much added up over the years it's all paid back at that time in almost all the cases that is lower than what the house is worth so they or their ears again whatever's left over in a little more than four percent of the time the reverse mortgage uses up everything so worst case scenario you'll be in is that um the reverse mortgage gets everything from the sale of the house and that's it nobody's digging into their pocket to come up with an extra cash you're not paying anything your kids aren't paying anything there isn't this kind of like hidden oh my God this is going to be like a bomb that's going to kind of blow up and it's going to just it's gonna like screw up everything that's right so there's interest that has to be repaid it's not too good to be true there's a cost it's all deferred to the end but it helps your cash flow while you're living there so I'm just going to mention one other thing and that is you know I'm often talking to folks like the folks I talked to yesterday who's one of whose big concerns was how do we protect the house if we eventually need to qualify for Mass Health the message is named for the Medicaid Program either because we need nursing home care I need a lot of Care at home in order to avoid going to a nursing home and what I'll constantly tell people is the way you do that is you transfer an interest in your home called the remainder interest the interest that starts when you die to a third party it could be an irrevocable trust it could be your kids to somebody that interest is going to kick in after you die you keep a life estate in the property so you keep control of the property while you're alive right right in the and and and that way if you later need to qualify for Mass Health then MassHealth will put a lien on that life estate um but as long as you hold the property until you die when you die the life estate evaporates and therefore so does the lien but the catch is if you have an existing mortgage right uh if other than a reverse mortgage if you have an existing mortgage to transfer that remainder interest to any third party is a violation of the mortgage right if you have a HELOC to transfer that interest as a violation of the HELOC right only in the case of a reverse mortgage can you then can you have the reverse mortgage keep this light the state and transfer this other interest away without violating the mortgage now many people don't kind of care about this because they're like oh well they're never going to pick this up anyway the bank's not going to pick it up but if you're one of those many seniors who worries about this this gets rid of that worry yes so so I I know Steve yeah I thought that was a great summary of kind of the way the way all of this works right um and and and if if folks need to reach you or they want to talk to you more about this I know we're going to have a you know like a slide on that at the end but what's the best phone number that they could read you that's the phone number for me in Milford is area code 508-282-632 nine that's my business tell that's the best way to reach me great and once again so this isn't an advocacy Pepe I just know that he's done a lot of good stuff for my clients that's all you know many reverse mortgages companies work the same way so if you're interested in this talk to anybody you want about a reverse mortgage talk to Steve talk to other people figure out what your you know what the best deal is but the point is don't throw away this option this is a crucial option for a lot of seniors Steve thank you so much I really appreciate you taking the time folks thanks for watching and I hope you enjoyed this and I hope you get you tuned in to other Bergeron briefs if you think that they can help you deal with a particular problem thank you very much thank you

call the Board of Health meeting to order for August 15th um the first thing on the agenda is citizen participation do I have anybody for citizen participation all right uh Steve looks like Steve Mitchell hold on just unmuting so thank you uh I just I've got a couple things uh on the on my list number one the first thing is you know I I would say maybe six years ago uh the select board got engaged with she attempted to control the donation bins that that populates I think all communities uh in in Metro West and uh what I'm observing is a lot of use of the donation bins as dump zones rather than as truly donation bins now I understand that the Building Commissioner is really responsible for that if you read the bylaw that's is his responsibility but I think there's a health related component here uh you know one of the problems is We Can't Ban donation bids but you know we need to uh I I think we need to do a better job as a community to manage these things now one of the components is that the landowner or the business owner accepts a donation bit he allows a donation bin to be put on his on his property which is fine but I think that comes with some responsibility for kind of maintaining the health and safety of that those uh those situations so I just wanted to bring that to your attention I don't know if this is a uh you know maybe there's some coordination between the health department and the Building Commissioner and working to resolve some of these situations but you know I think we you're probably all aware or have witnessed these these situations where people just really just leave piles of stuff next to these bins and uh so I just wanted to bring that to your attention you know it's probably not the most critical important thing in the world at this point but uh I think there is an element of of Public Health involved here so that's number one um but Raj maybe you could check with the building inspector and see if that's something we can coordinate between him and us I know and you know and I've seen this all around uh I'll have a conversation with him and look into what we can do about it you know so definitely yeah good I I appreciate that and then the second thing on my list is is and I know that Jay is going to do a recap of the medical clinic from this past weekend uh I'm not going to stay on the meeting but I just want to acknowledge all of the work that that members of the health department contributed to that medical clinic and the success of it and I'm going to leave it to Jay to describe it I think we all came away feeling it was a success and uh you know something that we were really uh I think pleased to be part of but I really need to acknowledge Jay because he really I mean for like a year and a half this guy just worked endlessly on this project and I don't think it would have come anywhere near its level of success without his commitment and his leadership and uh so I just want to acknowledge that and it's not to diminish you know any all the other folks that that worked on this uh in our local community group I mean you know Raj and Laura uh Kristen French I mean we had a ton of Ashland people that were involved with this but you know I just need to uh I just need to really acknowledge Jay and his his efforts and works so that's my tune tonight thank you Steve yeah great thank you thank you Steve all the food was really really good yes it was well the food was good well I hope so we spent enough money on food it was worth it thanks Steve good all right I'm gonna leave you to your business have a good night we'll talk to you soon yeah thank you take care bye-bye thank you um do I have anybody else for public comment uh okay Mark go ahead thank you good evening Mark Sony 409 Hawthorne Road National Maps um I have a couple of questions can this town set up a um uh all tell y health Clinic to uh get percentages of Ages of people male snails females young old can something like that be a percentage to be um work on through the health department that's one question Mark you're asking how many males and how many females in town I'm looking for it and I'm looking for the answer on how to get that answer in like in a in a town graph form of percentage of how well this town is healthy like the way you we use we did have the hot Ashland thing that went on years ago yeah Mark I don't think there's any kind of data like that you know a lot of that's you know people keep their health stuff private okay so that's this one and um the other one is um is there any way of having Health Grants to help out the town with a comprehensive plan to get this to help businesses Health doctors and specialists in this town can there be any way again a grants for this um I well I do know Raj and Laura are always looking for different grant opportunities you know and some of them are very specific but I know uh Raj and Laura if they ever see anything that would meet the town's needs they do apply for them and Mr Bowman I can add we we have grants but they're very specific like right now we have a nursing Grant from the Metro West uh Foundation you know that's just for nursing Clinic you know uh then with the shared services we we have three four grants but they are very specific uh to topics you know that we we can address but like yes we we can look into if something fits there you know but um currently we we have good amount of grants that at the health department that that are specific you know to to the topics that that we got the grants for because because I'm looking around on the computer to uh Grant uh Grant things to um state and federal government so what they didn't what they give out and how it can help economically health-wise of the towns cities if they can co-assist with Grant payments that people can get them and then fund for opportunities that the town can work on and work with the comprehensive plan to get a growing expanded Town other than what is what it is right now that's it thanks Mark thank you so the next thing on the agenda is the reorganization of the board um so I guess I will start off if do I have a motion for anybody for chair of the um Board of Health going all chime in at once anybody want anybody want to do it no we have to know I wanted to nominate somebody go ahead um I'd like to nominate um and Thurman as the chair for the Board of Health right when the other nominations okay anybody want to second that well wait do you want to do it Ed do you have enough time to do it yeah yeah I mean I I can usually make most of the meetings yeah I mean if I know Barbara made a motion and I obviously respect that if you feel like there's too much time I certainly don't mind you know doing it if you I'm just saying it you have a lot more crap on your plate that I have stuff on my plate but I was able to do it so I'm just saying if you have too much stuff and you would prefer not to as long as the other board members are okay with it I would be happy to take that off your plate if you would prefer to do it I do not want to rob you of that opportunity I'm just I'm just offering I don't want to I don't I'm not trying to upend Barbara's you know but I know how busy you are and I didn't want you to be a good guy and do it and you're spread yourself thin anyway so I'm just offering and that's also with the um approval of the rest of the board too because I've done it for two years in a row and it would have to be a unanimous vote anyway you know unlike if somebody had a runoff that could be a three to two I would have to be unanimous yeah um yeah unless anybody else and I just know how busy you are that's it um first one I didn't even think to nominate you because I thought maybe you had a lot on your plates too but no I and I yeah yeah I know it Ed does more stuff and more towns and I could even yeah no and I I no and I respect it's great I would you know anybody could do this you know if they won but um he's a good guy and Ron if you want it you've been the chair and I would not mind being the vice chair and then between the two of us you know I I mean I'm happy with that I don't you know except Raj how do we deal with with Barbara's you know nomination if nobody seconded it to how do we do it I wanna I wanna do it legally I'm happy to do it well like I said yes emotion I'm sorry Laura what'd you say she can revise her motion yeah resend it okay okay revise it yeah all right so I can revise my motion to nominate one yes um well one so it would be one in ten right I'm sorry I think you'll just say Ron first and then we'll do the vice chair thanks so all right I would like to nominate wrong um to be the chairman for the Board of Health second I'm gonna second Barbara's um nomination of Ron of the chair any discussion on that all in favor Dave and are you guys okay with that I don't want to do it absolutely are you okay okay I am Ron I I if if you are I know that you step down because you were very busy um at the same time I know Ed is you I yeah personally would worry about taking that since I am in between jobs and I cannot no I I completely yeah no I'm okay if I could if I could swing it you know last year I could do it again and I'd feel better about helping that out to be honest with you he did a ton of work on this you did you know a ton of work on it as well but at least it's a little something I can do so okay all right appreciate that I just wanted to make sure you guys were okay with it yeah and so and I think we are unanimous everyone yeah all right so now I need a nomination for vice chair foreign [Laughter] I'll second that any discussion all in favor all right it's unanimous um and then Laura just sweet do we still have the secretary seat or a clerk yeah no clerk okay uh so do I have a nomination for the clerk of the um actually of the um we need a well sorry a motion for the clerk of the Board of Health and I would like to nominate um David I'm happy to accept the nomination um I guess I uh it would help at some point maybe now um just if uh someone could uh to know exactly what it does yeah so exactly so I think I have an idea but so David you have to spend 47 hours a week sitting with Laura going through dogs that's what I was afraid of it means basically in this particular case that if I'm not there and Ed knots that Ed's not there which would be exceedingly slim chances that if there were a quorum between the three of you Barbara J and you that you would lead the meeting that's basically what this means yep who is the clip right now in my time as the clerk way back when I did have to transcribe one meeting that Laura was not saying for yeah I still don't like her because of that because she does a way better job no it's a very difficult and I remember she does an amazing job with you know getting things right and making them succinct that's not easy so yeah but she's she almost never misses one sorry Bob right I thought burned the debt was well I I'm certainly happy to accept the role and and I'd already kind of resolved to take uh um better notes um during the meetings anyway so yeah I guess this will force me to to keep that practice up all in favor I'll second that if you're ready okay all right all right all right Barbara you got the year off next next year um um Ryan do you want to take over from here or you want me to just keep going for now okay I think he froze up okay stand hang on okay all right um I think um I think Jay you're up with the um the report from the uh the event you're on mute sorry so first I I just want to thank the folks here for participating um and and the people that were there uh over the weekend and Barbara was there in triage on Sunday Ron was there on both days in medical um and and Ed was there you know throughout both in the clinic as well as over at the vaccine clinic and I I think Ed you said that you walked seven and a half miles on one of the days or something like that so there was a lot of walking so I know that there's going to be lots of time for thanking people I think I kind of consider what we're in now phase two which is finding follow-up care for the peop for many of the the patients that we treated at the clinic um 90 odd patients which is quite a bit um and I'll get into that but anyway um I think it went really well I don't want to take up the the you know the significant portion of this meeting with with the clinic because the fact is we still have at least three meetings three deep briefing or post-processing meetings to um happen um and I'll keep you know the the board informed of all those but what I did was I put together some stats that I pulled out from uh the ram numbers and I gave them to Laura she shared them of all of you um and I kind of broke this up into um service War but I I'm just gonna pull out I think some of the most important stuff so it seems like we treated about um 300 or 301 um that number seems to be debated patients in the clinic many of those got more than one service so maybe they got dental and medical or vision and medical um and I broke down the numbers um per service um below the totals um also impressive were the number of volunteers that we had we had on Friday for setup day 41 volunteers that does include the people that came in from Ram which are a combination of paid employees as well as the volunteers that work with ram and travel to multiple clinics but we had 151 volunteers on Saturday that's you know Ram the 30 folks from Ram um you know plus 120 volunteers from the area and folks flying in from other places and of course this includes the professionals the optometrists dentists um and the medical staff the doctors and uh and nurses and such um on August 13th Sunday there were 112 volunteers that registered I've got some service values in there so RAM does monetize all of the services per CPT code Medicare standards they also monetize the volunteer value or the you know the so-called Manpower or ours our value of of the effort so that's all in there as well I've broken these numbers down into an average per patient so for example the average Dental patient had a value of 425 dollars for medical is 236 per patient for vision 261 and these include the exams any surgical procedures Laboratories and things like that um for the vision um service we treated 157 patients and we um produce 140 pairs of glasses now some of those and I did have the numbers but I didn't include them here and I can't remember some of those glasses will be made on site at Ram headquarters and then mailed to to patients but the majority of these things were made at keep Tech in the vision lab and uh provided to patients right there on site so they walked out with them for the dental service we had 77 patients over the course of the two days and I didn't mention that um Saturday was 6 a.m to about 5 00 p.m um that was uh the duration of the clinic and then on Sunday it was 6 a.m until about I would say 1 or 2 p.m and that's kind of typical it's sort of a half day on Sunday usually so 77 Dental patients um with and I've listed the different procedures that they received here um and then for Med the medical service I think this was probably the most surprising to everybody we we service 201 patients we were just to put it in perspective we we I think we're expecting maybe fifty five zero patients so this is four times the number that we had expected we could handle that volume because we had so many medical professionals and again I think Ron for being there on both both days he had a few very interesting cases um that that he can talk about the other thing um that I should mention that is significant and not reflected here is that we um let me get back onto Zoom so I can see everybody we reached our capacity very early on both days so our Dental capacity on um was it Saturday I believe was 60 patients 6-0 so just as an example um when I left on Friday night at 11 30 there were already a few people in the parking lot when I got back there at four there were 20 cars at 4 30 when I came out with coffee into the parking lot there were 30 cars and from there it just sort of exploded exponentially with cars in the parking lot by 7 30 we had already registered the full 60 patients 7 30 in the morning of course they weren't in the building they were registered and waiting outside to come in and those patients weren't fully processed until about five o'clock in the afternoon when we when we finally shut down um so that was impressive for vision I think on Saturday we hit uh the capacity about 10 30 or 11 um in the morning and for medical it might have been by noon or something like that so this just gives you an idea of what the need is out there and also the promotion effort that went into this and how effective it was and I um you know really want to give a shout out to Ed Hart for for really putting a just a huge amount of effort into this um he went everywhere to tell people about this clinic and he was worried that people weren't going to show up which is kind of funny um they showed up they showed up both on foot in cars dropped off by Uber um that it was it was you know at one point in the parking lot I I was asking for more help because it was just sort of just um you know I won't say difficult to manage because we had an excellent crew in the parking lot but but there was it was more than I had expected were you going to say something wrong or somebody no that I heard something Jay I'm sorry I I do have to jump off in a couple minutes but I just want to also thank everybody everybody we all just worked so great as a team um and but what's what's really what really got me most of the weekend was that we have such a need in our community that is so unmet um you know we could do this every day and I I still think we would um you know find problem areas um and then the the other thing that we identified to Jay I just want to remind you that we probably have to work on even as a Health Board is the ability in Massachusetts is the only state we found out at this Clinic where students are not allowed to work even though their instructors are there but they can do it at their school which we could have seen so many more people if the students were allowed to practice yeah you're you're right at and that was one of the disappointing things about our Clinic We There was such a need in the parking lot uh we had to turn a lot of people away so um and those were difficult conversations to have even more difficult because you needed a translator involved um you know most of the folks that came to see us did not speak English and um so that was that was really difficult you know Ram there wasn't really much they could do about that with the number of providers we had was kind of what what we had to deal with um but you're right we had a dentist on site from tophs and um you know that was one of the things he talked to us about he's been to a lot of these everywhere in the United States overseas um and you know he said that this is a real issue in Massachusetts you know you have some of these laws that are sort of these Legacy laws that prevent um you know restrictions on reciprocity from out of state providers as well as even in-state you know students and trainees do it certain doing certain procedures and that also goes for Optometry as well so um yeah your point as well taken Ed um we can talk more about that off offline I suppose but um I know you have to go you know I don't if anybody has any questions for me again I will update folks as we go through the debriefing process where we're going to get information from Ram about what what they think went right and and what we could improve on and we will provide them with feedback as well and then now the next stage really is finding um follow-up care for the folks that we've got uh what is that why are we doing that because many of these patients have I think some serious conditions that we identified fortunately in the clinic um and most of them do not have primary care so um the the effort now is in getting them signed up for health insurance and or providing them with um referral sources that will sliding scale um for medical dental Vision um you know so I and Ron is going to play a big role in that I really do appreciate it Ron and actually a couple emails encrypted um with some records and stuff like that we can talk more about that but um let's go on vacation and enjoy yourself I'll take care of that okay thanks all right yeah um and Raj I did I didn't I recognize you Raj was the the entire time as well and running back and forth to the vaccine clinics thank you very much my beauty sir thank you you know I appreciate it yeah thank you yeah yeah that you you said Jay anybody with anybody all said okay yeah uh you know I'm just gonna Echo um uh you know Steve Mitchell sediments you you know I already told you all fair but you did an awesome job that that should really be recognized you know you were the impetus to get everything going you recruited a lot of help but I agree with what he said if you did if you aren't running it that you know you really made the whole thing come together there's got to be somebody at the top leading everything and you know that was you from start to end so you know you help you helped a lot of people and um you know we all helped you help a lot of people which was nice but you know you started the whole thing and it was a really great event I I made some friends that I think I'll have you know for a long time so uh it was it was it was great to see all those people out there and people working together to help people that you know needs need bad care so thank you yeah you're welcome hey Raj just to follow up on that I don't know if it's in your report do you have any numbers on the the vaccine part of the clinic that you know that you did and Ashland did for everybody I guess then yes the number was 35 from both the days you know uh okay I guess that's what we got you know uh but it's still a lot of it given the complexity of administering childhood vaccines you know uh for me that's still a big number you know so to accommodate that that many kids or vaccines you know so uh but that was the number I got uh correct Dr James 35 right that that's correct and when I went over there um I finally got over there on Sunday there were a number of Haitian um families over there that apparently just arrived in Framingham um and they had organized rides for them to get them um those kids vaccinated so that was you know the timing was very good on that visit and I did speak to Framingham Health director quite a bit um just about you know uh the need now in the area and stuff like that no I he he really seems like a nice guy um and good to talk to what was his name again Raj are you talking about the Framingham director yeah I have his card and we're gonna get in touch Mr Murphy you know William Murphy William Murphy right okay yeah he he did come to Framingham maybe like four five months back you know he was the director in Sudbury great guy you know but only thing I want to add you know like you know I mean we've been working on the wax Clinic you know childhood vaccine clinic from a year and a half I mean you guys have seen the need first handed here you know so the vaccine clinic you know the the need is even more higher than what we have seen in this Clinic you know so that was one reason we have put a lot of resources you know or time to get this Clinic going you know and the good news is that Framingham is also trying to restart their Clinic you know that they've been doing for ages you know uh but uh just some hurdles you know uh but they should be starting their Clinic soon um there was that was close last year you know because their Public Health retired so but it's coming back together again and hopefully will be able to take out this load you know that we have in in the community regarding the vaccines yeah how many folks they signed up for health insurance over there at the learning Arena so so just for those that don't know um in the same area of the luring Arena they running the the vaccine clinic um brace and Latino health insurance program were were also over there signing people up for health insurance for for Mass Health as well as providing information and sign up for snap and other services any numbers on that I didn't get any so no I I didn't either so you know so but but we'll look into that and probably the next meeting will update the board you know I I will I will be in contact with them to get those numbers yeah okay thank you and yeah and Raj just um do we have enough resources to help cover Framingham you know with their kids getting back to school with vaccines you know they were good to us for a long time so were you able to cover them this year with that absolutely doctor on we've been doing that you know the last numbers we had uh like maybe from two three months you know we have actually we have administered over 100 vaccines you know to to Framingham kids you know I mean we cannot really we cannot there is cannot do what Framingham did it for us for all these years given the resources we have but we're just trying to do whatever a little bit we can on our end to to help Framingham you know and still I mean now also we're happy to take any Framingham kits you know actively but you know we have limited resources you know but we are trying to expand our Clinic also but I'm just glad like we are able to do our bit you know just yeah well that that's really nice to you know help those families and those kids out to be able to get them in the school you know to be vaccinated be able to do that so that's great good work thank you okay all right all right Raj uh item six your uh your agenda yes so uh first thing I just want to update you on the chestnut Place Apartments I know the the management was in front of the board last uh last meeting a couple of good things you know sanitary situation at the dumpster have tremendously increased uh they've been sending me pictures every week you know so I'm happy with that uh so that they have they have made a lot of improvement there uh about the whole housing cases the the one we had a bad bad housing at the 13 joint Drive Number Four The the occupants have moved out since you know and I got a confirmation from from the management and they'll be doing the work on the unit now you know I still kind of struggling with the unit you know where the rose problem was you know what I got from management uh this was like a couple of days back that they still have issues getting access and all the pets you know in in the unit you know so we still have to work on that situation that have not kind of resolved uh but maybe next week or something I'm gonna go out and do another re-inspection and see where the situation is uh but uh it's like both sided you know they they have some uh issues getting access to the unit you know and all that stuff so uh that is still pending you know and I guess uh it came in the meeting uh and I guess one of the management guys was in the office couple of weeks back and we uh and then they're working on the pool application that we talked about that we didn't had for the season you know they they have do have a semi-public pool on the property and this year we didn't get the application so I I updated the board last time uh about the second item you know the part-time Partners we we have extended an offer and uh gave Poland or you know she have accepted our offer shows she'll be joining uh the department on the 21st as our second part-time public health nurse so Kate blender have a lot of good credentials you know she is going to be working as a school health nurse uh with the District of Dover and Sherburn so uh she's gonna be available to us uh every day after three o'clock and so at least Wednesday she'll be doing the cleaning uh with us every every week so that's on the public health nurse with with our tobacco control program the Framingham have hired a new Tobacco Control manager his name is Mr parivolal and uh he's settling down I'm meeting him with him tomorrow at 10 am and then I'll bring him in front of the board maybe next meeting or something for him to be you know on on like that he can be agent two or board you know as a tobacco control manager so he he joined like maybe last week or something two weeks back and we're meeting tomorrow uh just just to go over our Tobacco Control both the beaches uh at the Hopkinton Park in Opera and Main beaches and uh Ashland Beach is posted right now you know so no swimming or recreational activities in the water might be getting results tomorrow you know of the samples that was taken Friday and I'll update the board if there are any changes and similarly the washu compond is also posted right now for algal bloom you know so most of our recreational water is posted as of now uh Central mosquito control program still spraying you know if any of the residents need any spraying for the mosquitoes uh and given the rain we do have 40 uh water samples that are positive for West Nile Virus in the state so far fortunately no human or animal cases of both Triple E or west nile so far in the season and I hopefully it stays the same you know that nobody gets that but uh the numbers are that right now like we don't have any cases of either West Nile or Triple E right now how does that work that's amazing with how wet it's been that is correct you know but uh given given the water samples positive we might see something but hopefully not you know but okay for for right now it looks great thank you yeah we we did had another uh resident call for abandoned pool at on Cedar Street uh did the inspection we have issued an order you know to correct who is in touch with the owner of the property uh to get that mitigated we did get that spread and the pool treated through the center of mosquito control program so that was done and just waiting for the compliance from the property owner to to cover the pool you know and cut the vegetation on the property uh last item the whole street landfill we we're looking for the contract we did had few proposals now you know that we are reviewing and hopefully will extend that contract soon to somebody you know to to do the monitoring at Hall Street landfill there are a couple of um vendors that that we have provided to us with the codes you know and we're gonna look into that and get going and I'm open for any questions for the board now if people does the mass the Central Mass mosquito control project is that something where they just go in and spray or you have to request them the idiot this may just bring the do it beginning of the season but now yeah if you have to do it you you can request it you know you can do a question through our web pages or straight on the central mosquito control program like I did that for the Cedar Street property right we had an okay from the property owner that they can do it and then we requested that and they did it they came out and do it okay so any any you know citizen of Ashland can make that request online or get a hold of you if they'd like to have that done to their property that is correction yes okay all right great and how long does that run through like I guess Middle School September end of September until the first Frost yeah I mean the mosquitoes disappeared after the second hard Frost I can check exactly like when they stopped spraying but uh I guess it takes too hard for us you know okay I guess under 32 degrees you know to for the mosquitoes to disappear or you know completely die but that I can check you know like when when is the last paying so I'll I'll shoot you any oh no yeah I'm sure by the time it gets that cold it's probably not much of an issue but you know I you know at least you know for the rest of the you know the summer you know beginning of September it's nice to know that people can call them and if they're having an issue right yeah thank you thank you sir yeah okay anybody else Barbara Dave Ross do you um can you remind me I know we've had problems with I can't remember if it was if it was Triple E or um uh um a couple years yeah okay yeah yeah at what point at what point in the season if that's going to be a problem have we seen it become a problem is it is it by this time of the year that is correct so so uh yeah with with the Positive samples right so how it works is initially the program right they do uh or this is throughout Massachusetts right they they have areas where they go sample water right like and that's what I was mentioning that there are 40 positive samples so far uh in in the state of Massachusetts right and given given those uh positive samples we know the West Nile Virus is still is out there you know uh that there definitely can be activity given the season is still on right uh so that's how they predict and what they want to do you know to mitigate the situation you know so given given lot of rains this time uh I'm glad you know we have not seen anything but like it's still early you know I saw I will uh encourage the residents to take all caution you know like you know wearing long sleeves you know apply repellents and all that and you know be not out you know but during during the evening hours or late evening hours right and if you have any standing water you know just just dump it you know that's one of the major causes you know of mosquito growth you know because the mosquito grow only in standing water no no running water you know like I mean they won't be able to grow in a flowing water you know so if if you have that on your property you definitely want to get rid of it because both of these vices right the West Nile you know and Triple E they are they're very bad you know like I have seen myself I've seen a resident in Watertown when I was there you know who got West Nile Virus you know and it was bad given you know the neurological effects it will have you know so I met that Resident you know I was out for inspection and he was not able to walk you know so it was bad bad you know so we definitely wanted all caution given Hall given the severity of the disease you know so absolutely but yes it's still early you know uh to say and hopefully we don't have anything you know yep and the um so the I assume that the the closure is due to the the bacterial levels that probably also has to do with the rain um probably washing pollutants into the water or that is correct you know so yeah I mean multiple causes you know one of the major causes is the fluctuation in temperature that causes the bacterias to grow you know uh that if if it is flux shooting a lot for for both of the uh our beaches you know the I guess it's like 70 000 cells you know that's that's the minimum you know that the max they can have you know the numbers were still over that 70 000 Mark that we had in our portion and they I guess do two samples in a week you know uh and we need to have two negative samples to open the back for recreational purposes you know yep yeah I just didn't know if it was worth trying to educate the community on the um you know the the importance of like picking up after your dog if you're walking them at the State Park as I know many people do and and how that can you know affect the water when there's so much runoff from rain and so forth 100 so you know those are the causes you know that we have like you know we use our fertilizers you know uh you know sanity situations you know yes that that causes this bacterias to grow in yep okay thanks thank you all right thanks Dave all right all right Raj I'm giving you two weeks off okay all right okay I'm I feel I'm still a little jet lagged you know right but like yeah I wish I I was able to do it more clean time to the clinic but you know I yeah I don't know how you could devote any more time to it than than everybody else was there so yeah thank you so all right um all right we'll move along to the consent agenda anybody want to make a motion to pass that as is yeah and I will yeah okay yeah well just no just for me since I wasn't if this if these when this says approved border Health draft meeting minutes um the only thing it doesn't say is for which meeting if it's for last meeting Laura then I'm just gonna recuse myself just because I wasn't an active member but you know sorry about that yeah is it for the last um it was the one with the joint meeting with the select board I think it was two meetings ago okay yeah so yeah so I I can't vote on that right the three of you kind of the three of you can approve it for sure you were there this is uh July 12th this was so you were there yeah I wasn't technically oh right that's right I wasn't technically sworn in yet right even though yeah so so I was there but yeah but the four yeah so the three of you can approve that that'll be a good vote okay so I'll make them the motion anybody want to make yeah I'll do it uh make the motion to it okay to pass the consent agenda as is okay great anybody second that yeah I'll see okay great Barbara seconds any discussions or comments no okay all in favor oh I can't vote it's free we can vote okay terrific all right that passes three nothing all right um I don't know if anybody has anything you know that they'd like to discuss I guess the next few meetings in September the 5th and the 19th so we can get back into our regular thing and Raj are we still and and Lara as far as you know are we still gonna go remote are we going in person what are we doing that's that's the votes call so you know whatever the code is comfortable you know we'll we'll go accordingly okay one thing I want to mention sorry yeah no go uh I'm sorry just for the discussion you know we might have a septic uh variance situation I'm currently reviewing the plans you know this is on stubest Lane uh that I was looking at the plans even today you know there's some revisions we need uh for for the engineered to do once we have that back you know uh I will I will I'll be in touch with the board you know if if in case we need to do that before September 5th you know but okay yeah that's it all right so even if three of us can get together to do that that's fine as well right yes sir but um yes thank you yeah okay all right we'll make it work if you need us thank you yeah and I'll I'll just say you know if if we are thinking about whether it's going to be in person or by Zoom um I would not object to being in person um you know and and I think that's probably easy for me to say I mean Ron you are working you're at your office and no I mean I I can always I can always make it I just always stay here and do stuff anyway so that yeah whichever way everybody wants to go I'm happy to do it this way I can be in person if people would like to be there um you know so either well so we'll wait and we'll you know we'll talk to Ed about her rather have a full board so everybody can you know get their opinion in and see which way like to go and make everybody comfortable I'm okay either way as well okay all right all right as always anybody want to make the most important um you know uh call of the night I can see I would like to make a motion um to attend this meeting at 6 52.

so we had 41 new students 90 total open enrollment students so there's 16 new open enrollment kids and 15 staff kids that are on open enrollment of the 90 or those are additional of the 90. okay yes no no yes of the 19th and then withdrawn students we had 42 students who withdrew and you can see there the breakdown 17 other students went to Sahuarita and and some of those kids were kids who were probably their boundaries eight students out of state six are being homeschooled and the surrounding areas we have so many TUSD London Rio Regal wedding basis and when it is um overall staff students so we have 47 total staff students at our school which again I I always look at that number and I'm prideful that you know teachers know we have a good school they trust our systems and procedures and hence they want our students at the at our school so we have 47 staff students 32 of the students are in boundary so their staff members who live in our boundary area whose kids and then again there's 15 that are that are Staffing update all vacancies filled with the exception of two bus drivers that we kind of went through as a two is it three three so we're not two sure two and a half okay and thank you of HR and our leadership team for moving so quickly on interviews and reference checks because if you recall at our last board meeting we still had two playground monitor vacancies and Aftercare and their full amounts bus terms yes so we have and you have some drivers in the hopper that you're visual patient update we are finally thank you Mindy Mrs Suarez we are refining our process for the destruction of special education records um after four years of the last known enrollment at Continental Continental records can be destroyed so we're going to be working with notifying parents via newsletter Facebook websites and direct letters to let parents know that if they do want to spend records they can contact us and look at them and again um thank you to Christus school for overthinking the process and there's the message that will be posted on our website and on Facebook for parents budget and finance update so Thursday August 10th was our day destruction came to a close option included three buses two beds and a horse floor scrubber um there you can see the starting bids for the buses was a thousand dollars so our res and then you have the for the man and the scrubber so bus 99 went for 5 500.

bus three went for 6100 plus 96 went for 8 900 and the fans went for two thousand each the force the four scrub scrubber whip for um 504 so the total that was made in the auction was 25 000 yes success so my only leeriness is that you can see one bidder purchase two of the buses and they'll be heading to Honduras so they were supposed to make a payment on Monday so since Mr Schubert is out I don't know that that actual payment was made so hoping that it wasn't a scam but I have no idea at home how big that who bids or not but we're going to think positive yes we're going to be positive so um and Mr Schubert wanted you to make sure to thank the Public Surplus for their marketing camp which gave us true International audience so hopefully that will work you can do that in the future school facilities board project updates new flow is is on site um right now as we speak they're outside with the collapse pipe that occurred in the middle school and while we may have been able to make the repair sooner if we did not use the school facilities board by waiting for them to approve it and release the funds at same just 20 months dollars by not just using our regular MMO and of course they did Capital dollars is always a bonus pumps for the domestic water and irrigation system should be installed sometime this week is that what they're doing outside they're outside working right now is it info or is it the cost it's new flow okay it has to do with the repairs on the septic right okay so again the pumps for the domestic water irrigation systems is also a savings of twenty eight thousand dollars to the district that restoration start planning on that project and site plans have been uploaded to the architect on the weatherization project so patience is a virtue and a savings upcoming events and presentations just on things that we're doing um like I mentioned before the Ida conference in Phoenix is happening um I'm gonna attend for two days from India Dr Robinson and car psychologist will be attending on three days uh on Thursday August 24th I will be on the superintendent panel for aspiring administrators stand the delegate Discovery portion Thursday attend and be nice we love visitors and that concludes my my report and thank you and have a great evening and you can see there's Deanna and I on the first day of school and I meant to bring in the awesome picture that Steve Austin he brought to us for the first day of school that with Deanna and I with both cult on my first day so thank you all and thank you again for your support thank you and you belong to the principles [Music] all right so good evening everybody welcome back to our 23-24 school year [Music] um this is our my principal's report on the openings of school and it has various departments I've also contributed to this presentation so and this was our welcome back so ladies and gentlemen boys and girls hold your breath make a wish count to three come with me and you'll be in a world with your imagination take a look and you'll see into your imagination if you want to do paradise and go look around you do it anything you want to do it you want to change the world there's nothing to it and that is our theme this year we began this year this school year with our new teacher induction which was July 26th through the 28th and they participated in collaboration with us at site leadership District leadership as well as with one another and colleagues and the following trainings took place Google Suite Benchmark Advance we go math Continental safety protocols love and logic presentation by our superintendent classroom management and positive behavior interventions and supports and this included many of our staff and people who also came such as Miss valetti who came to do classroom management with our Elementary music and Orchestra director free service when all our stops returned was July 30th through August 4th and it was kicked off with our leader in me training and program professional development with all of us as a staff it led into safety training mandatory reporting technology trainings 301 information staff handbook Transportation updates HR finance department updates that Department training and all staff collaboration and building those with the reform relationships within another one another as we head into this school year we also want to thank some generous donors that have already we had it already has begun the generosity of our community here and a local church donate backpacks and school supplies for our middle school students they also donated money towards student lunch accounts we're grateful to all who generously donate to our school and we had another donor today we've had a few just this past week with bringing more school supplies for our students and voicing how how important it is to them to be able to give back to our school and to our school community then we had our amazing meet and greet that superintendent Enrico mentioned we had a great turnout a lot of our family members and families were here and students it was a success in speaking to a pre-k through eight we got many of our teachers had it almost everybody show up with the few not coming in each grade level as I walked around and Mr Lathan and Mrs Rico they were telling us yeah we had almost everybody come through especially in the Elementary classrooms saying you know there was maybe two or three that didn't show up so it was a really great turnout of support to start this new school year and to support not just their students but it was a great show of support to all of us and then there's some pictures of our meet and greet staff members and all excited to be getting to meet the families and their new students so first week of school was a success that was last week kindergartners did amazing within the first half hour they were engaged in their morning Circle time and getting ready for learning new new routines and procedures we didn't have anyone crying within those first 30 minutes and we had headed we went into the boohoo breakfast with the parents and we didn't have any parents crying either so it was a really good morning but they had really great questions and we're also ready to to learn more about our school and and sign up they got to sign up with our PTC and they had wonderful questions for Mrs Rico Mr Lathan myself transportation and with Lupita Toscano who runs our kitchen our cafeteria morning arrivals and dismissal procedures run as smooth as they could for week one we were really talking about how smoothly they did run and I think it's because just preparing and knowing what we have to do together as a staff family things went went pretty seamless Middle School periods and Elementary transitions were also successful and students were on their best behaviors our Middle School team was doing really amazing one standing outside to this day still feeding the students as they come in in the mornings regardless if they have a first period class or not and being that smile for them when they walk through the doors and we got to do our PBIS rotations which is positive behavior intervention supports for our students they rotated throughout our campus as we discussed with those expectations and procedures are in places such as the playground areas if they're an assembly in the gym how procedures are going to be on our buses what those expectations are in the cafeteria so basketball courts in the back if they have recessed at their break time it was really great um a lot of great conversations with the students and we've been seeing that they did listen because we didn't have very many at all for as we're going into week two knock on wood everything will go keep going great but the kids are are holding each other accountable too as we walk around in here in here and then we had our first staff meeting of the year it was a great check in with each other staff collaboration and team building is really off to a great start so we're excited for what's to come and welcome back Colts it was great in the morning to see the middle schoolers especially those that are entering sixth grade high fiving hugging each other the community that they've built with one another and checking their schedules to see you know where if they had the same thing just the smiles that they all had on their faces update on special education from our special education director Mrs Suarez as of August 10 2023 we have 85 students in special education preschool 13 k through eight so Kindred through second there's 22 students third through fifth 24 and 6th through 8 26.

those are his hours not his family's hours that were also with him and so they came in day after day just about all summer long um since he was given a contract and he came in and cleaned that room and then we're like okay this guy he's he's done he's gonna go away and then then the uh then that the request to Greg has spent money started coming flowing and although he wasn't a science teacher I don't know how but he discovered all the laws that need to be met to be a science classroom and in a matter of about three weeks with regulations with state and federal guidelines um got the proper eye washing equipment the proper stickers on the door for having chemicals the appropriate log look all of that stuff he immediately took on that responsibility keep in mind he went to school to become an elementary teacher so they don't have Hazard stickers on that Saturday and then if that wasn't enough then we're a new teacher orientation and I get a text in the evening after one of the days of a long day of presentation and and we gave it to homework and the homework is look at the staff handbook and of course we all know no one reads the staff member and and he said if you have a minute give me a call so I give him a call and he starts asking me a question about what he thinks is in the staff handbook but it's actually governing board policy and so Dan and you're like what where's that in the handbook and so we go look at our handbook and see that there's a reference to so we read the entire handbook and then went and read all your board policies and I had questions on that and so this is just an employee that we're so lucky that we were able to get on our team his dedication to his students into the school this we've never really done it this early in the year and it's because of Marcel and his dedication that we felt that we needed to um and not only that I don't think anybody in the history of the Continental Golden Horseshoe award has been a brand new teacher in the first month so I just like to to recognize you that your hard work your dedication your passion for doing your best day in and day out is not been unnoticed and it's our honor to select you as a little before July [Applause] [Music] and saying hey what's your best class you know what do you like what's going well and hands down in science so both of our science teachers but Mr Fox and kids are so excited and I said that's exactly what we want we need good male role models we need teachers who are excited who can get our kids excited about content and so we really do appreciate you and not to mention all the clubs and stuff that he's sponsoring because he's starting Channel 39 is going to be our video channel and today we signed off on equipment that's needed for the video club for um so we're just super super excited and and he's teaching Spanish so as our elective as well what else oh science fair coordinator with our other science teacher and we really do try not to like burn out our new teachers right in the first week she's having fun so we'll remember to check in on you like at the end of first quarter to make sure you still have that smile but as we are they wanna I like to thank you too because when he did come into interview and we said you know I have do you have any questions that's one of the last questions and you think I don't think I have any I looked at Steve and Steve looked at me and Mrs Wade was in there she's a third grade teacher and we looked at each other and I said I have a question for you you know would you be interested I I see you as a science teacher and I'm not saying that because we had a science opening it was something just special about Mr Fox there was something special about you that I thought you know we have the wonderful teachers that have remained that are still here with us from middle school but trying to find really good teammates for them and they are singing their praises of their new teammates in middle school too but I want to thank you because he said to me and Mr Lathan and Miss Wade he said well if that's what you see me as and you guys can help support that of course that's what I'll do and you know what Miss Wade said she went that's the kind of people we want on our team so we're very very grateful that you're part of our team thank you okay thank you thank you and thank you that's awesome thank you so generally we also have pizza when we have kids here so our next one will have pizza and um Cults of the month um you guys are welcome to stay or take off we've probably got about 10-15 minutes so with that we go to the consent agenda a handful of things there that's emotionized I'll listen to um he comments on the consent agenda with that roll call please Mrs lucky bird yes Mrs Amadeus yes Mr Winky this is Allen in this restaurant yes thank you that we will move on to the District financial report which will be probably fairly short ly um [Music] so hopefully everybody reviewed this um to the best of their abilities report oh sorry yeah discussion um Mrs Lefever yes Mrs Mr mcgiven Mrs Ellen yes [Music] and on a new business item 12.

this is a good one right yes pay raise prop 301 pay raise so this is the base pay allegation for prompt 301 and you can see the teachers will be receiving 20 dollars that will be spread out over all their paid periods so as a reminder 20 of the 301 funds go towards base pay and through the motion only a question to approve the prop 301-based pay allocation it's a period of 24. to the discussion yeah this is Mr mcgibbon this is Alvin yes Miss Johnson yeah enough for an exciting one the first reading of the amended policy advisory so this was presented um the meeting before and last and we approved it in terms of it had to do with the textbook adoptions and curriculum being posted and what they had done it was redundant where the main advice we stated that all board authorized policies shall be shall be subject to opening Vietnam and it said the policies amended to delete the word board because the board gives a superintendent the authority to post-curricular and follow open leading law so it was just worded differently and you see the policy where they just took out the work of report because the superintendent operates under the direction of reward all day so this will be first read for information and then we'll take it to second week so that was not an action item so we'll move on to the Civics Club that's how many years we've been doing this for many years it's a lot it's yeah I would say if we've been doing it since we've been here for 15 years since I've been I think the middle age 90s was the first Middle School [Music] all right second okay Mrs yes yes Mr mcginnon Mrs Allen yes [Music] um how are you guys how are they going to raise money yes until we'll have the normal fundraising raising that we do in the normal letters for text ing okay next item is the governing work resolution or an imaginary teacher day which happens every year that the governing board declares and agrees that September 28th is the legendary teacher day time to recognize teachers and honor their contributions so we encourage kids to write to former teachers and thank them and I believe Mr Schubert already set up for us to do pizza and salad for our teachers on that date on a legendary teacher day and um because there's a resolution yeah um Mrs Allen yes please takes us to the leader in the education so again we are asking for approval of the character education program leader in me the resource has been posted on our website since June 14 th and it is one of three character education programs that was approved by comparison ication for school it's funded primarily by Ade State matching foot funds 80s Grant and the current foundation and it's based on Stephen covey's work in the stem attempts of highly effective people and one of the analogies and the kids you may hear them talking about it and um what in the presentation they talk about just yourself being mentally prepared being emotionally dwelled to do your job and to be good for others but they did an analogy of the water bottle and the soda can and talking about the water bottle can be in your car if you live it can roll and when you open it it's it doesn't overflow versus the soda can if you shake it up or drop it around it and it explodes so the concept is stay in control of your emotions and be the water bottle so teachers were doing that lesson with their kids in terms of you know don't overreact be the water bottle stable and it's going to be common language for us too and for each other you know in the water bottle stupid okay so that we can also keep each other in keep each other in in good spirits and calm and looking at the bright side right things could always be word worse so we're very excited about that work and it's continuing in the work that we've done with the speed of trust with our leadership team in the seven habits so we're excited that the kids okay what is this yes so it's 3k8 um so we'll be um you know following and it's 15 minutes of a little mini less than um three to four times a week and if you did carve out time in middle school so that they could have uh how much time and they have but they have a 25 minute clock before they go to lunch and just as a reminder we had talked about what we did our school improvement work to talk about our goal for under School Improvement rubric it it really came up that the teachers really wanted something in the social emotional realm for students and for themselves so our two days of the end service is truly based on taking a look at yourself before we even got into enable so the website is there lots of good information if you want to promote that Indonesia so we're asking for approval and we do have the three-year um contract um with your approval it'll continue for the next three years with the current foundation and the state matching funds so in the end it may accost us maybe five to eight thousand dollars so we're very grateful for the additional funds to be able to implement this expensive program too I'll make a motion to approve their character education program later the discussion I'll just say that I'm really happy you're learning that and maintenance Allen yeah Ms Johnson yes and the next one is uh we are motioning or asking for a new auditor which is going to save this up and put it out for a bit into a handful of companies including the ones that have done the last previous times and uh these guys rose up fully qualified to be fulfill the tennis but substantially so it's like half so well I'll make a motion to use a cwv [Music] second discussion to make sure I'm reading this right it's um so we have a one-year contract and then four-year renewal so it could it's really good yes we typically will approve for a year and if it's going well and we have the option of reviewing it typically locks in the price okay so if we need to go with a two to three year in the middle next year they doubled their prices yeah right listen Bieber yes Mrs yes yes [Music] um next is the asba delicate assembly coming up the uh towards the end of September and this is really where um the Saturday morning after the asba it's kind of interesting because you go and uh you vote on the asba policies and as a delegate you can move comment but it's all official to get into these little electronic electronic everybody's all serious then of course there's always one or two that are there every year that created that most of the promotion and the ones that have been there years before I was like oh not but I think that's pretty common in place but it is it's pretty interesting so when you see in front of you um what they're asking for us to approve through as being in terms of their their agenda so the first one is they don't the topics don't typically change it's the word within the category so what is that it would fund district schools because it's to at least the national medium per pupil so then the next one okay two is to preserve its own control we need to improve outcomes for all students and require public accountability for taxpayer dollar spent on education so those typically don't change you can see the SE added or fourth year and Mr Osterman will be giving you that information back to us and I think they took out the code last year yes codes your shopping list it's it's you can get a copy and it is attached on the agenda but if you'd like niani can send it out it's best if you go to the school website to do that to for dogs if you like if the one that I sent you through email you have to think the word says on file attachments and then it'll take you to pour dogs it does work okay but yes you can send you their email um discussion about toys Mrs Allen okay new after school clubs looks like there's three of them dungeon dragons cool are you moving through this this is to improve the club and the next one is to improve the sponsors around after school Mrs mendelman yes this is Mrs Ellen yeah Mr Ashley and next is to approve the sponsor of the Ashley problems class ification love the sponsors and my only comment is we're going to have to reduce homework so kids could go to their sporting good sporting events and all these clubs well and the good thing is I just want to add that when we hire new staff that are excited about and so these are a prime example of bringing new people in who want to help either enhance the clubs you know we have or start new ones and so we're very supportive of any new ideas as well and it's an incentive right if kids want to do stay part of clubs and sports they keep their grades open what they need to do in their motivation these all three weeks to you um yes so miss Mr Jones our science teacher six seven is doing Dungeons and Dragons um miss devere our new school counselor and middle school is doing the knitting crocheting crafts part and then um mirrors flower Allen is who's been doing cheer is also going to be so she's going to do dance first and fourth quarter and then cheer second third are you not a new person but it's a new club so thank you um your support Mrs Le Bieber yes this is Mr mcgibbon yes Mrs Allen yeah and this is the memorandum between continental and the Arizona Rangers and just again as I mentioned in a prior email the fact that we don't have our school resource office and we are forcing them to have the Arizona Rangers support in terms of wanting to work with us they've been visible during drop off and pick up after school and kind of walk into campus so again it's free of charge it's just an understanding and an agreement that we're just all working on thank you between [Music] Continental School District 39 in the Arizona so remind me why we don't have this at all so so the SRO was um taken off our area and moved toward s if there's a major shortage with past Arnold so Mr bacon has been in contact with um the chief or the is in charge of the sros for the Pima County area they got down to five and their goal is to have 25 would be fully staffed so if that tells you where they're at they they have a lot of guys that are coming off the streets and into the SRO unit they're planning on being fully stuffed in November 1st we're told that at that time we made receive a SRO but you know how that can go with attrition and everything else so um this just kind of gets us through to this it's a Band-Aid in my opinion having the arrangers but it's better than nothing um but they're willing to do it at no cost to the district because they value the Safety and Security of our students and then when we do get a full-time SRO returning then they will cease and desist and only come to public events that we need them where the sros aren't submittable Public House it was really nice I missed your question how often are they here or planning on being here so the way that it works is Arizona Rangers have a work duty log and it's posted Monday through Friday for them and so it's at their availability and so it really depends on that it's just started so we're going to be doing a training for them as you saw in the ml mou they asked that so we'll bring them on campus in the afternoon kids aren't on campus um the ones that have been here have done personal walkthroughs with buses Administration so that they're familiar with our safety protocols but we'll do that with the entire company I'm here in the next month wow it depends on their availability as you saw in the mou we kind of targeted some some times really drop off in the morning pick up in the afternoon and lunch time in history not just our school but in history that's when big emergency incidents has happened not that you can pinpoint to time but because they're volunteering that's the challenge but so far that with someone we've had they've been here from seven o'clock until 3 30.

information [Music] Mrs McDevitt here Mr blancowicz Mr Vitale this is Walsh Mr Wolf sure [Music] the United States [Music] thank you street today Mr Becker yes [Music] sorry yes thank you for presentation [Music] or any questions correspondence nothing okay just a collaborations okay um resources [Music] members yeah um squash myself and we have three agenda items the first is that uh we've moved forward available searchable websites um these are the very circumstances are not able to drive into town there's a schedule to come to the school for the situations where they may see is well our policy um [Music] long and what we're looking at right now is one of these things where the policy requires that the students [Music] and competitive tools and then they basically uh every every case so that's where we are right now um some of these were so we'll keep it working on that to help us insurance case um the next the next piece that we talked about are the two agenda items so there are two policies and two um regulations spring um changing first one is policy 16 42.1 which defines uh and it expands how the staff can use [Music] that um you have an option here where basically when it's foreseeable say somebody has a surgery upcoming um that they have to provide at least seven days notices requirements uh superintendent it doesn't change anything in terms of policies [Music] um [Music] possible I just want to say on this one the break this is very much an evolving regulation and policy I do have concerns about how um balance team training is provided by the state um but what's not here is foreign [Music] there will be involving it similar to HIV uh regulations and policies right now I expected probably in September that will be continues do you want to talk a little bit about the um thank you so um motion C1 tonight basically said go to the circumstance the second bylaw 31 which basically is what we have in place so star assessment has given us this verbiage to allow us to escalated to spend that by law and you push both the policies and regulations in place so are they saying that that can be done for any policy this makes me very uncomfortable I mean the whole purpose climbing through to read so I I I you may just not know the answer to that do you have any idea foreign emergency practices [Music] in this circumstance it says [Music] additional things all right favorite um during Realty there's the pto8th grade scale um also from the PTO they are seeking a member to serve as a Hospitality officer [Music] and then just as we're gearing up for the schoolyard our Administration Community groups and have had great conversations real Nation shoes where I was on the pto's website sorry guys [Music] sure sure uh student schedules and teacher schedules are being final lives together we've been working on our professional development plans for the start of the Year those are being finalized um along with you know additional professionals and um so you know we've been quiet but a busy quiet but I think people who are our 12 months are getting anxious for the students so um I also wanted to share that I did receive a letter today regarding the municipal parking lot over here and just to make people aware that the mayor and council at their last meeting on 14th introduced importance that would restrict parking it is a lot to Municipal business only between the hours of nine before Monday through Friday my understanding from the letter is but there is going to be some Renovations happening after these headquarters um and you know they have decided to live in the parking aware of that I will also include that in my letter to make them aware as well um means still meeting with people getting to know groups that they make um yeah there are students show up just ask questions well it says only free Municipal business es um so yeah you know I believe they are also going to change the access point over there and that gate as well so I created more of an issue after school I understand that we had a number of teachers uh yeah it's the drop-off can be the same conditions yeah similar um and you know just from the perspective that you know once parents drop their students off in order to you know decrease the amount of time that students are here so we're looking at that looking at the doors that feasible um us to know that if the fire alarm was off at 8 20 .

or you can just click on that it I just found it thank you it's under more on my computer anyways I uh wrote to Helen who wrote to Joan uh and she sent me a bunch of pictures so that was really great and some of them are say we can only wish that that stuff would be in our town right now I think that's our goal perhaps it's certainly mine um I'll try to organize this Kev can you pull up the report and um and then we'll start working off of the documents I guess you know trying to show both of my screen um oh you have to allow me to share come on I could share screen I need to let you do that host YouTube okay I just made you a co-host all right stop sharing sharing for a second okay I want to change what's showing on my screen oh yeah okay so I have your minutes Kathy on the right here and so I'm hoping we can do some copy and paste thing or editing to both at the same time um it looks like you have the majority of um the discussion that might be better in the report I don't know if you want to duplicate any of this but um well yeah there is some stuff in there um for sure I was kind of thinking that we should have the report be the report and then the minutes are kind of short actually for the meeting because we mostly talked about the project and and that subject matter should be in the report more so than the than the minutes um yeah or we might want to embed the report in these minutes and I and we definitely need a list to a company the report this time or to be at the bottom of it because I think um they didn't get everything that we talked about um and I forget I went back through some stuff and I went oh bummer they didn't get this they didn't get this it wasn't from the last time it was from us because we even put all the stuff in I don't think we weren't clear and I think we have to be clear um and then um Okay so I'm not sure how you want to start or what you think would be the best way to do this do you have comments on your stuff because it's so much shorter than mine you want to use your stuff first or you just want to use the minutes um well I think we can start by just going through the report one one item by you know item by item um in particular the ones that we had noted and read for the applicant to respond to um but it well okay so item number 1-8.1 this was just a note um about the the state of the project in terms of the terms of the far do we want to keep this in so actually I need to call this report number two and the meeting date was August 3rd and we haven't submitted yet but I will add that date when we do um you might want to revise this great so do we want to take items out that were just notes in the previous report or or leave it in go like this this first item we didn't address this in this past meeting this most recent meeting but you sent the report right yeah this the report was sent um so the idea was that in the subsequent report so this report number two we would add information um to each item based on what was discussed in that in that meeting so so for example [Music] um the most recent meeting was eight three we had discussed on 6 15 this item about provide more information how storm water is treated and so in this most recent meeting we discussed it further and we noted that here so we should keep this entire item in the report keep it off I I wouldn't take stuff out necessarily you could just say has been met or they do something like that so there is a June early June gcg report that I found under planning board documents today so it has the August 3rd stuff that we just got plus that is like right below it um and um so you want to you want to say um we should just put the current date on all sorry uh Kathy I think Brendan is waiting in the yeah I just got him okay I've been allowed in um yeah I think we should leave it in because they just say something like um has been met or satisfied and you keep on going um and I would have to go back to an older project and look right now but I think we can say um you know if you've got something in there that says um let's see how do we do this what was the red the red was the new stuff everything that's read in this report was an action item that we were expecting the applicant to provide further clarification on or provide a document um at the 8-3 meeting so we should we should certainly provide an update on each of those yeah I think if we fill this up with updates we're in trouble so we got to think about a better way to do this I think if it you have written for instance up there maximum fire is 1.5 for proposed project fires one and if the and if the far is of is as of right that's the comment that's the I think that's the final yeah that was the comment so maybe we don't right below it right I don't think we need anything there I think we because otherwise we'll have tons of those and people won't read it and the idea is to get this to be read okay all right so I haven't added anything on this item yet so um this project I I looked at the Civil drawings today and the the height of this building in the middle Peak is 45 feet and the other two are lower but they're not much lower so I am once again I'm I just sent everybody the streetscapes and Falmouth and Plymouth by the way John Good Friday was talking about last time and honestly I look at those streetscapes and I go why aren't we doing stuff like that here and why are we even so still crowded up against the sidewalk and we literally go out to the to the envelope as far as the envelope will allow for our buildings so what I was starting to say about the TCG reporters they're they're way according to our rules they are way under for the amount of parking they're supposed to have for this project which means they're getting a massive um special permit uh they're asking for a massive special permit okay on doing that basically your dispensation if you will and um I don't know if this project is doable by pushing this building back farther it's going to make that second floor patio a lot smaller you might have been pushing the facade back and losing it you know some of the units in it or I'm looking at this on well during the meeting and I saw that they they needed 27 um dedicated commercial parking spaces and after the I think 0.625 reduction [Music] um well that was after that's after the reduction but then they were only showing 22 in the plan so that's true what's that they're still short and apparently a couple of those spaces number 17 and I don't remember seeing numbers on the parking spots number 17 is too small but it might be a style down below and I didn't check that when I looked at how the turning radius was supposed to happen for that fire truck and you know if their walk if they're driving slowly because they're done with their fire great but if there's a fire in the back there they're not going to be driving that slowly and that corner one of those Corners where they could potentially have a vehicle parked it's it's really tight it's that corner in the back somebody commented on it at the meeting thought it was you within the parking garage no within the drive lane on the surface and so I'm just wondering like I don't think that was my comment I don't remember who said that well you know they were saying they can't put canopies over the parking spaces because they don't have proper fire access then I'm wondering how much bigger are those canopies supposed to be if that's going to impede into that space I think a fire truck can drive under a canopy they just didn't want to spend the money on on building it yeah well that's why I was trying to get some ideas about how much it would cost oh something else I did that was yesterday's project which I didn't get very far but you know the comment that was made to me eventually was well if the ground's all broken up it's not that much more expensive put it in um so anyway um this is architectural this first heading is architectural and well architecture and building orientation yeah I still think it's too close to the street I don't think we're gonna get anywhere of that and I think this that I mean stuff and found as I just sent back in there they sent two different um files one from Fallout the one from Plymouth and I just put them all in the same zip file they show two different places in both of those towns where there's like walk through breezeways where the buildings come together and um one of them looks like it's an entrance to a garden in the back that was Falmouth and I don't know what the other one goes to it didn't really say but that I thought that was an interesting idea I mean the other interesting idea was something that Ron said at the very end of the meeting which was breaking up the facade with different colors which might help with this project but I don't know how we say this stuff in that and that um it's I'm just really struck by how really really big this is going to be and how tall it is all right downloading these pictures did you want to look at them were you talking about one of these yep that one is one of them and the other one is in Plymouth which would be towards the uh yeah keep going there's one that has more where you can squirt some more visible that one's sort of visible yeah that's not it yeah you can see the Breezeway walk way there and that's like if they don't um so actually well when you're done with that but see this is sort of an interesting concept because it suggests there's other other than just this mass of the building and and the yellow is set farther back than the gray and I guess the gray might be that Boardwalk a sort of Boardwalk porch well I think the fact is there's kind of bit too much on this site and don't even have enough parking for it well right and that's pretty much what I think I was saying and we heard from the public was it Joan that that said that that um she didn't want underground parking yeah she was complaining about the underground parking I'm not sure why actually because that's mostly for the residences I don't think that's really for commercial but I thought that was interesting but she might have said it because she doesn't want this building to be so crammed up if they had less units some of the you know commercial parking could go underground like the people who are working at the commercial um I know that the shadow study is off they have to revise that and send it back oh no they were way up so four 48 commercial spaces are required but then they combine parking spaces required for the entire site 106 and then oh times 5.562625 but see they can send us this thing it's gcg that's that made the comment about the parking and the peer review report and the peer review reports are always fascinating because this guy might be off on his math on this presentation and he might be doing something that he's not allowed to do and the whole point of gcg is that they go through the bylaws and the rules that need to be applied to the project and then if you want to do some fancy math and try to convince people [Music] that you're okay great I mean I think it's insane that we have some of the parking requirements that we have are just too much uh but if you're a business you're going to need parking there's nowhere to really Park that slow so there exactly and if those businesses I mean if it's a dance studio which would be open mostly during the day I totally want to do a recital and then I don't know what they do um people are parking across from 200 and walking down they're parking at that little lot walking across with those spaces of Phillips and then they're at the municipal lot and walking around and across um but he mentioned it we can't really read that um it's in the I don't know the first few pages excuse me of that report because I didn't get very far through it one so they're saying a minimum of 72 parking spaces should be required what what and I think uh I think they're just talking about the commercial mm-hmm foreign oh no no so that that's commercial and residential together okay um but they're but so the applicant is saying that they have 60 and so we're comparing 72 to 60.

foreign good evening everybody I'd like to call the regular meeting of the Brookfield board today for Wednesday August 16th through 2023 to order please join me in Rising to the Pledge of Allegiance okay so we have one two three four five of us joy is traveling and Rosa is on Route and stuff in traffic so she'll be joining us later today so um the uh first off on our agenda is public comment a board of education welcomes public comment you speak your show with up to three minutes to provide input to the board start of each meeting 20 minutes is allotted for comment on any item included in the agenda and at the end of each meeting it's raining time is a lot of comment on any item under the board's curfew so and we would also include overflow time for individuals who are not able to speak we do require sign up at the beginning list that discussion as a reminder discussion of personnel individual students or members of the board so with the boards we have to we have two Awards of one I would say is at the beginning one would be put at the end if you guys are okay we'll do both of them is that okay that way we can let people get back to their evening the first up is Mr Montero and as you go on uh you know the drill name and address all right awesome Ontario 17 Dairy Farm Drive just uh turn up the microphone good awesome Ontario 17 Dairy Farm Drive and uh it's not really just a question and I know it's on the uh agenda so you guys may answer this here in a few minutes but it's about the uh dissolution of the equity and inclusion committee um so just reading through the agenda here I know it states that we're going to continue this work under the superintendent it's part of alignment with the Strategic plan of school operations so just a few questions uh really why is this being dissolved this subcommittee and I guess for a bit lack of better words where where is it going and if we are going to continue using it in some way shape or form will parents be able to have access to all the information that's being shared last week at peeves Summer Leadership Conference they talked a lot about the equity toolkit which I have right here so if we're going to keep it in play which is fine I just hope parents are made aware and uh sure you guys are going to touch on this here in a few minutes so that is it tonight thank you okay thank you I just looked over to uh Amy who chairs that committee and is bringing forward the proposal this evening with this is um yeah cool that we will address all of that thank you next up is Mrs Collins thank you for taking the time to come see this hey good evening everybody Tara Carr 54 Indian Trail I'm here to ask further questions about the parent portal and it sent an email to Dr Burrell in the Board of Ed last week I believe and I've spoken both personally with Dr Burrell and the chair Mr Feldman this past Friday but um Dr Brill as I've explained to you both my husband and I have attempted several times to register all four of our children in three different schools for the upcoming school year on the parent portal and in one section this year the digital Locker section I believe it's called we answered all of the questions except for the the last question which I believe is a new question added to the to the digital Locker portion of the parent portal for this year um please correct me if I'm wrong but I do believe this is a new question um and this this was a very big concern for us as parents um the concern being the final question which is a new addition regarding Library limitations this question asks parents to declare whether or not they want to contact the library media Specialists about checking out certain material from the library this question truly really serves no purpose seeing seemingly other than to relieve the schools from indemnification should a parent find that the library materials available to kids are inappropriate due to their content rather than truly having a school take ownership of providing Library materials that are educational and at the same time maintain decency and high moral standards I really do not feel that this question should be asked and it does not belong on the portal at all but if it is deemed by the board because the Dr Earl told me it was his decision to put it on the portal I don't know if that's a legal Avenue or not but if it is in fact Dr Pearl's alone to decide um I think that if if it's decided that it must remain that the registration process must be changed so that parents aren't forced to solely answer a yes or no question without being able to proceed in the portal so right now I have four children who remain unregistered because I am not comfortable answering that yes or no question is there another way for my family to register our children without using the portal or will they be registered without completing um that section of the registration process um again if if the Board of Ed or the superintendent feels strongly that the question should remain then the question should be optional versus having it as a gatekeeper question um as of now if you do not respond again a parent cannot finish the enrollment and additionally forcing families to answer either yes or no now what does that mean if a parent changes their mind later so again I would ask that you please reconsider having this question on the portal as part of the registration process it is totally inappropriate thank you brief response things like registration are the purview of this is Lieutenant not the board board takes no I have no actions at all on forms like that how the car family can proceed forward and I know you'll be you'll be addressing certainly what the whole discussion of Library limitations sure the one the one thing I think just to clear up right away it's not it's it's updating um nation in Immortal it it is not about registration the children are registered if they've been here as students there's no issue whatsoever nothing happens they're waiting to school the information just isn't fully updated that's all that's that's moment that's exactly what the situation is no issue with the children being there in school perhaps actually I have it on my superintendent report thank you all um that's it for public comment next up is written correspondence Andy Correa wrote regarding foa on contract extensions Tara Carver regarding library book limitations Sanford Fox wrote regarding challenge books Lori is a lazorchek wrote with gratitude regarding her teacher at the year recognition and Irene Korea wrote regarding the VHS guidance Wing roof repairs next is approval of ordinance the board approved regular meeting on July 17th July 19th all in favor and it's approved superintendent of the parole alternative all right thank you Mr Belden um it is I think we're all awaiting with great anticipation about opening Candlewood Lake everybody's excited um see those uh Most Wonderful Time of the Year commercials for parents as the Indian summer approaches the beginning of school approaches but we are we are rolling in the district we are excited enthusiastic and ready to go um so Kathy if you're able to get that up for me that'd be great my superintendent report tonight I'm gonna I'll start with the Strategic plan um just a little brief update for everyone up here you can see we have a one-page document that summarizes the entire strategic plan and I'll walk through this I'm certainly not going to read everything that's on here but I really want to start by reminding everyone that last year we spent that are part of 10 months with about 25 stakeholders from Community inclusive of high school students parents board members administrators teachers and our para Educators really working on what what in some of our citizens on what do we want as the after a culmination of 13 years for our students and that was a 10-month process we put that document together we've articulate it shared it with the community and I just can't thank everybody enough who participated we then I think March last year I presented it to the board of education and it was approved by the Board of Education move forward with the particular particles and strategies what we have here up on the screen tonight the summary page like I said it's a one-pager that breaks down exactly what the Strategic plan stands for in terms of the actions we need to take so the first thing is a vision sticker what are we trying to do we really want to create an environment that is competitive for our students that it's world class and that really at the end of the day is an environment that cultivates learning in the world and you may recall that last year our Focus was reset and relaunched coming out of coven really getting getting all of our faculties back together setting our goals and getting tightly and developing the Strategic plan this year it is literally creating tomorrow today we are going to take those strategic actions and move forward and simply our mission for for probably two decades now in Brookfield has been to inspire Challenge and prepare our students to look meaningful and productive lives that's going to really be met through the dispositions you see up there of the Brookfield seats we want our students to be excellent communicators collaborators creative and critical thinkers and change makers changing things for the positive in our community and in our world with the strategic planning committee really worked on was that middle section there with the likely background top of the yellow and that's the Strategic actions when you develop a strategic plan you really have to have big strategies you're going for and then develop plans through a backwards design model of how you're going to get there and so what you see is four big goals or strategies that we're working on as a district and as a board and this goes all the way through to our Pre-K students up through our grade 12 students the first thing is we really want to define the portrait of The Graduate what are those Brookfield C's really look like how do we incorporate them in an authentic way where all students have experiences with the Brookfield seas in demonstrating their Proficiency in the Brookfield sees from pre-k to 12.

[Music] thank you to the Republic for which it stands one nation under God um before we go any farther do I have all of the uh people that want to speak okay okay um who's our secretary and we're all here except for afternoon it's okay [Music] So Randy asked me the other day if I would be going to return home summer suitcases with you guys I think most of you have heard the story behind the solution cases but there are some people that maybe haven't seen which is quite a challenge for me to do but I am going to do it and I am going to ask Genie or Tara or somebody to share this presentation with you later if they haven't already that way you can go through and you can see the videos and the slides and things that I'm not showing you tonight [Applause] [Music] and she was injured on the job and could not work for a period of time so she decided to pursue a passion that she had had for quite a while she wanted to know why so many women and children were dying in childbirth in Africa and third world countries period but per se in Africa so she spent some time and went over to their clinics and what she discovered was it wasn't necessarily medical equipment or training people it was the lack of electricity and not electricity to run the equipment but electricity for light so there were women that were giving birth in the dark and if there's any type of complication or a C-section it was very very difficult for the doctors and a midwives to take care of them so she came back and explained this to her husband who is Hal Aronson and it turns out that he is an engineer and as they were discussing this problem he said why don't we build a stand-alone solar system it could travel with you on an airplane to Africa and that's how the solar suitcase was originally developed he developed it he built testing and stuff and she took the first one over it needed to be the size of a suit so that they could get it there so they got there they tried it out at a clinic and everybody was just enthralled with the suitcase everybody wanted one in all the clinics so they came back and that went on for a couple of years and they're supplying as much as they can it's all a non-profit so they let donations if anybody's interested in this project we hear about it um and they did that for a while and as she was over there doing this with the women and the children they realized that they had another big problem in Africa and that was the fact that the children in schools did not have electricity so one of the things that I showed one the the companies that they developed is a company called we share solar which is connected to the care solar which is the parent company we share solar provides these suitcases to provide electricity in the schools in Africa which we don't always understand because their system or their way of life is much different than ours so for instance there's a school over in Africa there's a field room for Deaf children and if you can imagine so these kids live at the school it's a boarding school and at night when the lights go out these children can't communicate with anybody they can't see the lights are out there is no electricity so that's one reason that the solar suitcases got started but it's much bigger than that so in Africa the school system the children don't just continue their public education they have to pass exams and tests to be able to continue their education and if they don't continue their education they are trapped into lifestyle lifestyle very poor and not being able to move ahead in life and not being able to help your family in any way so what the kids do because they don't have electricity at night they do have oil lamps which unfortunately are toxic and they they use them in very small areas that their homes are very small they're off they uh so what anyway with the children started to do is they started to travel to the big cities and they traveled to the big cities and the airports and they actually study at night so these are young people that are traveling many miles from The Villages are coming into the towns to study at night so that they're able to pass these exams so they can continue and improve their lifestyle and help their families um The Dangers as I'm sure you can imagine the dangers going back and forth between the villages is very dangerous in their country and especially for young ladies so we care solar wanted to help with that but they didn't want to just help they didn't want to just help by just sending suitcases over there they wanted to make an impact in the United States with our children also so what they did was they said we don't just want a censor cases we want our youth to be involved in sending these suitcases because we want our youth to realize that countries are different life's you know it's a different world there and that they can actually make an impact and a difference even at their young age so what we do is we create these suitcases with eighth graders it's a good age it's a junior high age it's when you're starting to develop your outlook online um it's just a really good time period for us to do that so this is our way of solving this problem we've partnered the first year we did it was 2018-2019 and we did it with one suitcase at Watson left and stays on a grant they send us all the training materials and then we have these training kits that we build for the kids they get trained with the training kits and then we build the international suitcase for the kids each to a part of building the international suitcase and I wish I could show you some of the videos and stuff I hope you guys will take a chance to look you'll find the links in here I won't click on them right now because I don't want to go over my five or ten minutes but there are links to pictures of the kids creating the suitcases and then there's actual pictures of our suitcases being placed the first one of wassuma went to bengoma Kenya in Africa in a secondary school the local deployment suitcase so along with the international ones PG e sponsored what we call a local Department a local deployment case those within the United States is placed for me within our country so the kids built that also and our local deployment suitcase in the United States was sent to South Dakota this particular year there was a really bad storm on a Native American reservation and so they used our suitcase to power their cell phones to be able to communicate outside the world and to have light that might have absolutely no electricity because of this huge flood so one of our suitcases went there that year then the next year thank you to our school district and our whole District support we decided to do eight suitcases so the first year we did one this year we were able to do eight four of them were purchased by art history and a high school student that was doing his um senior project write a mirror uh Agnes O'Meara works at our school and that's how Ryan found out about it I actually taught Ryan when he was a little boy and so he decided to take this on for our high school project and he earned fifteen hundred dollars to help pay for an international suitcase and that along with our district um providing you know supporting it is also of some funds and then PG e gave us one suitcase and then we got three what we call local kind of suitcase on a break so we're able to do eight suitcases this year and we had 100 8th grade students participated that year so the program grew hugely thanks to your support and then this was 2019-2020 these are the kids and click on the links later you can see the kids let's see if they're building the suitcases and we had the wasima suitcases so two the two Austin suitcases went to and I'm not going to try to pronounce them all they both went to Kenya um and a couple of schools in Kenya and if you click on this story that will open up the PDF that describes how they were placed and um it'll show a bunch of pictures of the kids and stuff doing it okay the this particular year was really cool because we share solar decided to not use their own installers or not to necessarily hire people that already knew how to install these solar suitcases in this particular year they went in with their people that were qualified and they trained a group of women in Africa to install these solar systems and the reason they did that is because when they're done when they actually have a working trade so we developed the suitcases but the solar panels and the batteries are all purchased in Africa so it supports there it it saves it saves us the shipping but the important part is it supports their economy and of course the panels are much bigger than the ones we use when we train that year I went to another school in Primary School in Kenya the next year we could not do it due to cobit the kids weren't allowed touching things and we couldn't handle things that year and then this is 2122 we had watsuma the class of 8th graders we have two classes of eighth graders at oci we've always had two classes in the nfci Ally in our suitcases the one of The Black Arrow running on it that's an actual picture of our suitcase you can read the kids names inside of it the kids sign their names we send them pictures the kids all right with kids at the other school letters it's really neat so that's one of my favorite pictures we get pictures of the suitcases but we don't always get a close-up of our Thursday so this was a wassuma um this one to a refugee serving School in Uganda so some of our suitcases have been placed in these refugee camps that have schools in them so these are families that are clean uh danger in their country probably most likely political by the best intermediate suitcases went to another refugee camp and one of them went to Nepal which I don't have any pictures of but that's our only suitcase that has been placed outside of Africa and then this is last year's crew so we've got one eighth grade class at walsuma and two at oci if you click on those you can see pictures of the kids and our swasuma suitcases have been placed we have one in Peru Kenya and we have one in this house Kenya and then our oci suitcases I don't have the the data on that yet so I don't know where they're going to be replaced they were done later in the school year last year due to a lot of reasons but um so we haven't gotten the feedback on that yet and then this is uh Hal and Laura we went up to Berkeley this is a couple of teachers that I used to work with in the beginning uh Nadine and Rhiannon and this is when we went up for training that's them do you guys have any questions for me this um the building of the solar suitcase is an elective that the students can sign up for or it's just done in their eighth grade this is science Sciences we take every other science time at all at both School sites and you can do the instruction or the science teachers teacher we share it so the first year I do a lot of the instruction and then once they know what they're doing they understand the curriculum they do all the premise stuff and I come in more actually building the suitcase you have to have two people there to supervise that and it's all done in steps the kids do a step and check it they do a step and check it and then once they've built their own training kit we take all those apart use them for the next group right and then when they build the international kit they'll come to me in little groups and they will build part of that International how long does it take um for the from the very beginning of the project four to six weeks the actual building of it probably two two and a half weeks but they do a lot of curriculum prep beforehand the global global energy a lot about global energy and where we get our power from and [Music] the difference in countries [Music] over a lot of really good stuff can we ordered some cases for this year yes this year we have three coming in for this year yeah so we'll do one of us with our A3 class thank you to you guys I really want you to understand that it's not just the kids that are having an impact this year it's your support also it really makes a difference thank you for bringing it back to us and showing us it's amazing it's awesome it's so exciting to see and there's a question cost s International cities they use fifteen thousand dollars then it was on the shipping and installation so the suitcase itself is probably five to eight hundred dollars but all the shipping and the installation and buying their solar panels and the batteries in Africa it all adds up to about two thousand dollars this year [Music] this year so super excited anybody else have a question over here thank you [Applause] that's really a great thing new staff member introduction and welcome our principals are here at the start of the new school year we have several new faces and uh we'll start off with our newest principal face the OES principal Kat Williams [Applause] The District in this role I have so many new um faces or at least people that you know have come in the last couple years and if they're not necessarily new to the district they're definitely they've been in new roles so um I don't think that's all come up how they were able to make it tonight see isn't this awesome [Applause] foreign [Music] [Applause] supervision we have Nina Powell Mina it came to us last year she um is doing she is our RSP teacher doing resource we have Deirdre Taylor and she is the art supervision we have Chelsea Porter she is um our she is one of our IAS in our SVC program we have K cross kid crosses doing PE and then we have Kim Dutra who is also another IA in our that's instructional assistant um in our sqc program so lots of amazing people here and yeah they are in valuable to our campus [Applause] thank you the loudest why was in the wildcat people had an Archer [Applause] all right so I had [Music] money yeah Robert are we gonna introduce Scott I don't know are you gonna call me separate stuff rock paper scissors [Applause] for so many reasons so um we have uh we have summer Bowl Mark who is a kindergarten teacher [Applause] [Music] I'm a student yeah and then Andrew messenger is joining us from OES who is going to be teaching Junior High science and we're super excited foreign [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] I'll say I'll send it okay so we're honestly come on super happy to have her on Salon Floor coming on for seventh grade teaching English and history from English language arts and history uh she just joined us this year from River Gold I've been doing that for a while and is fit in seamlessly and just super happy to have you here yeah yeah thank you we also have Michael Simmons coming on uh he's with us he's our SEL para educator um I had him as a student in seventh grade he's doing an awesome job so far and will continue no doubt and then we have Ian Pinkus also coming on he'll start on the 21st and um but he's working at military now I think he's working on this week and uh he'll be an instructional aid for uh part of the day in the special day class [Music] [Applause] okay that's it that's it all right it was great um moving on to our consent agenda okay kind of approval of the consent agenda yeah okay we have a motion to improve in second um roll call vote hi hi and I do we have any questions or comments about any of that okay that's very good all right monthly items of financial reports moving under no warrants I just want to note that usually in August we do budget updates but this year because the governor's budget that was signed and changed and were not required today budget updates or the county which was something cool I didn't even know that you didn't have to do that because there's no significant material changes so the budget updates will be presented next at the first interim so that's why if you're used to seeing that in August I'm just telling you that's why it's not on there I just had a question on the warrants on page five and it was uh for the Mountain Area news program and so there was a charge for Pool services for 26 685 so you can give me the documentation for that yes so uh we had signed a contract with my club for the summer program for the pool and that was presented in a previous board meeting but this bill is the July bill so if you saw a previous bill in June you know there's less days as there will be in the future bill for August but July was the full month and it just includes all the staff the insurance costs supplies everything for we have tons of kiddos that are attending and loving the school program so we were glad Yosemite and Bass Lake partnered up to do that for the summer and we have two-thirds of the costs the 70s one-third because we have so much participation oh I can't wait to see these swings oh yeah for the kids oh there's some out here and then they're out there and then yeah so what's in my kindergarten candy is that it's wheelchair wheelchair Suite is amazing yeah I wrote on it okay I was part of the safety crew I'm going to tell you Robert we I worked with anyway that's good we were like oh kids get their fingers here yeah it was fun um I did have some questions and I um they didn't save on here so I'm looking at my email okay to um you let's see I guess you answered them I don't need to ask him if there's any you want to be public you know it's something you think people would want to know about I don't think so I got my answer okay okay there's any other comments questions do we have a motion to approve the um warrants approval is that a roll call vote I am I okay you know moving on to hearing of persons wishing to address the board okay I have quite a few here they're all on the same subject and you you can address the board now or wait till that subject comes up which is the apparent rights proposal which will be a few minutes does anyone want to like this this time it's only Friday public comment is only for items not um these are all on the agenda yeah okay anything not on the agenda I have one that was submitted I have one that was submitted very good um this is from Nicole Meeker she's our Aries and data student database coordinator and she just wanted me to share this she wasn't able to be here it says um I wanted to let you know I appreciate all that you do for our district she had written this to Randy and but most importantly I want to thank you for always doing what is right for our students our district has a high level of professionalism and we have always followed the law I have been with Bass Lake School District for over 15 years and we've been through various board members who have used their position as a platform to voice their personal opinions and beliefs I know and believe in you that you will uphold the law and do what is right for our children you and all of our District staff are appreciated Nicole foreign okay moving on to our action items uh resolution 2403 districts to CMR representative [Music] I I okay uh resolution 2404 local assignment notification a second [Music] um the changes were made I think there were a couple of typos with regards to the date those are valid for the 23-24 school year I figured the ending date was March okay um okay so we had a motion to approve we did our roll call vote we had a motion a second hi hi hi all right all right the information I was first reading the proposed foreign policy and administrative regulations this was a monster yeah these these were these made up the June 2023 batch of policy suggested policy updates from csba there were several as you found help when you delve into it um all of pretty self-explanatory in the descriptions and I also attached the version that showed what was changing with the language struck out or highlighted and then also sent the clean coffee the final draft but this is for first reading or discussion tonight there's no action being taken on these I'm so I'm happy to answer any questions that you might have for one I'm happy that it's the first reading because the first thing I opened to read was 450 Pages it's going to take a little more time on this so okay any other word comments on these for now I like the idea for policy 1113 it has to do with the concepts from this new law that has to do with businesses that provide an online service product a feature likely to be assessed by children to comply with specified requirements and provides good guidance for districts seeking to create safe online space for students so anything to protect our students in that way yes [Music] the mental health policy updated and uh there's surgeon general's new guidance regarding the importance of social connection and the impact of social media on health and well-being so uh it reflects the new law which requires the California Department of Education to recommend best practices and identify training programs to address student behavioral and mental health including common psychiatric conditions and substance abuse disorders safely de-escalating crisis situations involving students with Behavioral Health disorders so this is good that it'll help link students to um updated reflect that districts are required to notify students and parents Gardens twice a year about how to access mental health services so I like I think that's a very positive one mm-hmm do it I call it no oh God at this time okay um well moving on to our hot plexus button issue uh first reading and discussion of the proposed terminal rights notification board policy it looks like everyone's here because you're uh has been reading yet um that was uh you know sometimes we have our meetings and there's absolutely no one here but us and then sometimes it's a full house with poor people and uh um I just want to compliment everyone for taking an interest in this issue whatever your opinion is and on coming forward to to participate and um with that um did they go right to uh I think I think we go with uh Diana I think we start with Diane yeah is on on the agenda here but I wanted to add before anybody makes a comment please that the reason I put forth this proposed parental notification policy is this is a response to legislators in Sacramento these last couple of months they passed at least two bills that override parental involvement and the rights and I believe they will harm families so the first one is assembly Bill 957 and it pertains to child custody cases involving a transgender identified child so our legislators refer to those children as TGI children transgender identified children and this will change Family Code 3011 the non-affirming parent of a TGI child will not be awarded custody of their child and there's a second Bill assembly Bill 655 and this will allow mental health professionals including public school counselors to determine if whether a child as young as 12 years old should be placed in a residential shelter without the knowledge or consent of the Mind nurse parent or Guardian even when there's no accusation or evidence of abuse and this is if a TGI child and parents considered non-affirming so in light of these two laws Sacramento is passing this is why I'm proposing this bill so it has nothing to do with policing students I I read the letters thank you for your comments we really appreciate your your comments in this it's very important to know where the public stands but I wanted to make that first so this has nothing to do with policing students this is not about putting extra burden on teachers the sole purpose of this is that a child in a situation where they have what the psychiatric Journal considers uh gender dysphoria that is considered a mental health issue and they should be seeing a counselor um and so we want to make sure that parents are brought into the process of knowing what's going on with their children because they need to provide the care and the support that's needed so it's not about outing children it's not anything to do with that so the first priority is protecting children and parents rights I just wanted to make that thank you okay okay all right so this is what we call a first reading that means no decisions are going to be made on this policy tonight and uh the board's not going to respond to any comments made by them probably and um with that anyone I will call somebody and you'll have three minutes but acceptable for three minutes and uh are you ready here later I understand all I know uh good evening members of The Board District I was kind of surprised to see this come up but I guess it has been as he's had a kind of a Hot Topic internationally and I'm glad to hear you say your motivation for this policy is intended to improve access Services for Families and students I think my my concern in reading it it seems like uh policies coming forward for our district from our board um with uh maybe a need for more information from the district to the Community First on how a lot of these issues are already being addressed I had a student come through Oak herself just a few years ago now she's 22.

the report says that there should be 72 and the applicant currently has 60 and that's total residential and Commercial right well if you look at this thing it's like he's like you know he's got it all covered I don't know exactly what he's trying to do with this I think a lot of times people look at this and go oh he's all set because he doesn't say he needs to have more or not and the fire thing is not on this it's its own single page document the fire truck if that's what you were looking for I I wasn't looking for her yet but yeah that doesn't wait a second if you go back right there that are those spaces numbered now they are and this is how I counted 22. where's where's number 17 . oh that's the one I'm complaining about too then the fire access because they have to go like they have to go up and then over I'm gonna make a left right they gotta do a little and with a fire truck that's not gonna be 40 feet long it's not going to be very pretty and they really only have 20 spaces because if this is loading for the commercial they you know that can't these these two spaces here can't be um parking for the public well it actually says emergency vehicle parking because that's what the fire department wanted and so um he's gone back and forth on that this is the latest thing he sent us so part of the problem is is where are Vehicles going to offload and so that's something that we definitely need to like put into the report and say where a vehicle is going to offload because these short spaces basically right now because there'll be people the residents will be getting you know UPS FedEx um and the other one Amazon they're all going to be coming there first of all definitely have deliveries depending on what they are and they're either blocking homer which is probably for the most part well actually those vehicles they might pull into the driveway I don't even know what they're gonna do um UPS FedEx all those guys they might Park in the handicap spaces if they're empty that's my guess is they'll do that and that'll create a problem until somebody catches them at it and in somewhere in here I thought they actually were mentioning the turn that Mark the Sony was talking about and the fact that it's hard to see going in and out I was just driving this way the other day and someone a pedestrian was crossing the road and I could not see them crossing the road until I got very close to them so I think it's a very good point that Mark made actually yeah I did too and it was at this corner right yeah The Pedestrian was yeah um The Pedestrian was crossing from um the south side of the Palmer to the north side right and I was going left to right on the plan yeah that's why I think the real the real danger is with that driveway being there so um let's go back to our report because I think we have to start marking some stuff in here or we'll be here all night again well for what if we're talking about parking I don't we really touched on this too much well should we go through this right now um and then come back and add stuff in in the areas so so this item was originally about uh the projections of the building and organizing them in a more logical way um having the commercial entrances in the recesses of the building and um and having the the plaza spaces sort of you know working with a rhythm yeah [Music] um yeah I was going to say I thought they met that part all right it's still well I think so I mean it was still a mess of walkways look at all wait go that's a better plan hold on this one yeah see like like look at those two walkways surrounded by um yeah right there oh sorry I'm pointing tell him where to point oh God I don't know I think this is a mess of walkways and and that's gonna be a pain in the ass to maintain and it's gonna look like it's gonna look awful so there wasn't a question about raised Planters being put in here gun and make it more can I can I share my screen yeah the one I just move this up or go yeah sure go in it's such an easy solution I just wait a minute uh I can't find you right now I need to like actually make you oh did you make him a co-host no um disabled from screen sharing yep it's it's stupid but sorry this thing seems to have knocked me off here go back on here we go Brendan make ghost yes Joe I'm gonna make you a co-host too so you don't feel left out here there okay um simple Pathways just into the the little coves I think and then uh widen the sidewalk so it relates to the building you have a better streetscape and maybe if you have benches out here but it just seems like you could actually get some columnar trees to kind of work with each of the the bump outs and scale or kind of scale the building um well rather than have like fitting two Pathways between this entrance I don't understand why you do that there's two there's two things here one of which is we actually think the wires over there are really tall yeah based on the photo montage that he put with a with the actual um the rendering they look like they're 37 40 feet it's really interesting um and the poll is the one down here at the end I'm pointing to at the Almond Street Corner and that in the photo montage jumps right out and we had a you know a good five or ten minute discussion about it so he shows them as being as tall as that so we were we were telling him to look for some cersus because actually I I don't like columnar trees because I think they look fake and they're not going to provide that sort of ambiance but if they're that tall and a surface would fit nicely under there tulip or like oak or Maple or something that's going to get like hdy but get some height to it simple walkways they're making a way too complicated right especially because like I don't know what's there's nothing gracious about like let's start with your first comment which is about the sidewalk and he's actually using the town side like what he is showing in here and he's like butt up to it with like pavers or do something nicer it's just such a random kind of sidewalking and having two Pathways into the store and one ear and like where do you really go but again yeah I think the real problem here is this building is too large for the site that's why I started talking about taking out units somewhere in here because he actually they actually need to push it back um I don't think they can without losing all your underground parking and maybe I don't know um well the parking Could Happen underneath because it's happening underneath over here and I've got a split driveway walkway the streetscape just really bothers me especially if it's unmaintained and um hydrangeas and just uh just it's just too much too complicated and too messy you took those out he's got clether in there now yeah that's not as great either but so okay but let's let's I'll stop sharing but that's just where I'm trying to well I mean I just think they're trying to cram too much on the site period that's part of the problem they're having and and I'm not I'm not sure that it's going to look great but and I the way it's presented right now I'm and I'm certain that whatever he puts out front tree wise isn't going to buffer enough the fact that this is a giant tall building a giant mass of a building in this area where right now there's only one and Gable that you look at from Front Street for instance from the Farmers Market so as you're driving along here instead of having that one house be that tall you're going to have the entire well it's like the entire block you're going to go from those one-story brick buildings to three and a half basically or four because on his um on the Civil drawing it shows Kevin yeah you know you could look at on this this is good if you blow that up because I think this is I was pulling this up because I think these elevations are disingenuous and they're saying that you know it's a three-story building it matches the streetscape but like but to your point Kathy it's just you know these might some of these might be multi-family houses I don't know but they're not not the entire block right and that's it is my big family yeah yeah right the one on the corner is multi-family for sure that's the one that's here I think but it's still a singular building single building single building single building where is this project in this view actually oh here and the it's not going to be that small no it's not gonna be no that's that's uh disingenuous that was the thing am I the only one who thinks we could like save and make it look nice or well I think it needs to be smaller but yeah I mean if if he knocks out units on the left and the right on the ends and shove the whole thing back that have almost no patio space upstairs you'd have to do some other amenity thing up there because it would be almost ridiculous how small that space would be up there this space is really a leftover space it's not designed well it's it's the intent is not to have a green roof it's because big fat bastrous the space that was that was left over left over yeah right so um yeah it's gonna be it's gonna be a massive when you walk on if you stand at the you know the walkway the home where I walk with it's going to be like straight what you're going to face a straight wall up right which I think is going to be really I mean the real issue right now is nobody's planning on people walking down here even though they talk about it being walkable and bikeable they're it's all about cars um and you know I was thinking how could how could this be better could we say to them you can only do this if you're going to landscape um the Richardson Building to the left do some more stuff in that parking lot to make it more welcoming and hospitable and the towns literally put put vehicles and construction stuff all over the trees in there so I don't even know whose trees those are right now that belong to the Richardson parking lot or to the town but and he doesn't he's gonna own maybe to Alden Street the Richardson Building guy I don't even think he owns that far before it becomes I think railroad right of Wayland which is totally unmaintained and so you know so then the next thing would be to get them to do some Landscaping across the railroad tracks on Front Street because there's a whole bunch of invasive Atlantis trees over there The Tree Of Heaven which is a vector plant for spider lanternfly oh goody uh right along the railroad tracks which is how they got in here in the first place and those you know if if better trees were put in on our side of the tracks it would be nice because and well we have to get the DPW agree to plow in there better or not stack snow against trees that's part of the reason they're in such shape bad shape but we there's definitely other things we could do over there um but even so that's streetscape is it's going to become a little um it's going to become partially a wind tunnel I think because their gun their neck's going to go after this corner going towards Main Street I think I don't think that's going to be there that long I think they're just amassing enough money to figure out how to get around historic mm-hmm or they're going to try to offer the guy next door in the back Warren a chunk of change for his building and he's totally ignoring people right now as far as I know because there's no other place he could really move and be able to do his business in town and keep all this stuff out in the back that's why he's staying there which property is that it's a one right to the back power tune so it's the the flat black roof just to the back yep that one are the are the um property setbacks the reason why the building is out at the face of the street and not not inverted where well it's probably this um the downtown district zoning right be that requires the building to be not more than a certain number of feet from the street I'm just thinking thinking out loud not more than a certain number of feet what's that not more than a certain number of feet well the downtown district isn't that the the building should be at the street Frontage yes but typically in like um well the downtown planning is building at the street Edge and you hide the parking right they had zero zero set back from the front and then they changed it to 8 to 15 feet but I didn't think that was a requirement I thought that was it was you had to have it set back at least that far because that's what they did with the the Trask building downtown which is a bagel table building and um the problem really is when you look at our downtown is the anything that's in old housing the residential is 30 foot setback so people look at that and they think it looks reasonable and nice for a setback and they think that's what should be happening but is that the grandfathered dimension well it's it's overlay zoning so if you're keeping the house if you're going to go um there's like a couple of dentists and houses there's actually quite a few and if you were gonna you know you bought that house from the dentist because the dentist was selling or moving to you know some Plaza somewhere and you wanted to bring your family up there you could your house would be fine it'd still be at 30 feet back from the Stream and if you had you know let's say you're a lawyer with a business but it's you know you you the front room your house might be your business and the rest of it would be housing for your family that's actually originally what people used to do or the family live upstairs so you could look at uh the pizza place uh I can't believe I'm forgetting the name of it that's over there right next to the town hall next I think it's next if you stand back you can see the house behind it or maybe it's the next one of the others one of the other businesses down the street well that was what they did they would they would do their business in the down stairs of the house and eventually when they got wealthy enough to build it out to the street so they have extra room to expand blah blah blah um so that's partly what the conflict is when people look at our downtown and then they look at what's being allowed they don't understand the zoning so the real question in part is can we again put it push it back or if he changes the facade colors and materials will that make it look less bulky and massive well you know we've yet to have that conversation we're seeing we or seem rendered generally the further back it is the more you see it if it's closer to you you don't you're not looking up well okay I'm still not gonna suggest that that's a good idea to have it this close I mean that's what I think Teresa would do right they would hide it enough or take the the onus off the giant facade and they put the telephone lines on the ground they do it just up to the corner of this development and they continue can the development continue with underground well we could ask so we could ask for Street trees tell us to go Pouncey and I can tell you that right now I mean you know if they're seeing a massive site plan approval it might be I mean that might be another way to make it look a lot better like we need Street trees and we can't do that because we have the telephone pole so yeah and my concern was you know I raised it like uh those utility poles those are those are so close to the building and uh you know I'm not sure whether uh they will they didn't show any Street lighting so those polls along with the street light and I don't know how close it's gonna be from the window that's actually something we need to put on our report because you brought up a really good point and he didn't none of us knew the answers to that we think the on the poll on the corner of Alden is the one that has the lights on it but even so whatever units over there is going to get blasted with light I don't know Brandon that's actually a good idea I mean we should ask that should be part of the ask but the utilities Underground make the streets get better right because then you're right they could put the trees out where they've got the poles right now um we wouldn't have to think about the polls anymore except at some point we'd end up with a pole at the corner I think because the wiring is on you'd have a poll on the Alden Street Corner um they're not going to pay for it to go underground across the street that would have to be something that would have to get worked out and I don't know I don't know how much that is I'm admitting a member of the public imagine you need some sort of like Transformer or some sort of cabinet to kind of transition right but they have to get the wires down to it so it would end up the cabinet would either end up going on on the gas station Corner which is already pretty ugly with a fire hydrant there um and packed or I guess it would go you know on the outside edge of Alden yeah or the town would have to I mean the town apparently is doing some of that work downtown anyway I don't know how much they are not sure Doug Small would take kindly to be to happen to do the you know cross Alden Street and then figure out where to put the utility box over there plus it would have to get coordinated with eversource which will be a chore in and of itself um but it's a good thought I mean we could put it in there and make them say forget it or realize you know that we're actually saying the street the front of the building is too small the street yeah gave to the front is too small because I think it's too small that's why I keep saying let's let's move it back can if there if they weren't going to do that open patio on the second floor would there be something different would that be like an interior space that that offer to people or to just be an outside space that wouldn't be accessible with it do a green roof period in there a little green roof so it's reasonable for people to look at you're asking about the second floor yeah if we were to if we were to get rid of the side units on the left and the right of that building let's say so he's lost four units or he's dropped two of them to like one bedroom instead of two bedroom so there's less square footage and he's gonna lose those little spaces I'm not even sure how he would do that he's losing common space on uh so Kathy that was a good the existing quote uh photograph right the elevation so in that it's just two levels level one and uh like two floors whereas this is going to be three floor exactly so if it is three floor it's gonna that poles are gonna be right at the second window well if you look at that one corner pitcher uh where is that the year that they are showing the building smaller than the utility pole but if you see the existing photograph that you had just on display well that one yeah so here if you see one two and the third floor it will be at the you know the their proposed building will be little higher than this one right or or the wire or the wires are not rendered correctly but this one is existing yeah this one is not uh rendered correctly yeah yeah the polls are left they have shown it higher you're saying they should be shorter yes they should be shorter they should be they will be exactly at the window level if you see somewhat near the Bengal level all right this is rendered um with the thought of the telephone poles that's right no I think they're trying to scale down the building so I'm sure they just the guy just probably just bumped up the telephone like Paul height they're not trying to scale it down because it's gonna look awful if the telephone poles are below the well okay so where's the other photograph that shows the corner it shows this view in a photograph Kevin in photograph um the other end I think it was only only this one is that a photograph of it the original photograph up up above there yes right so they actually removed the telephone poles from this view they use their model this is not the yeah it's pretty cool if you go if you go back to one of the first things they show where the photographs are in a skinny Banner at the bottom in this drawing oh yeah yeah yeah see you know I I don't like the way that this was done we were struggling to understand it which means it wasn't done professionally or appropriately right can you go down one more that one isn't it in this and this we don't really have yeah that's that's yeah but this is not the size of this product not the context yeah yeah that is that is like 70 of what it really is okay so I think and the first thing the architectural stuff right we need to put this stuff in that he needs to fix the renderings and the photos so they're accurate they're more accurate than they are now much more accurate because we we can't see the mass and scale of the building we can't see where those poles are going to be um and that's where we put in our comment about take the poles Underground because they're up there because they don't look right if he puts them down by the Peaks what do you think save the last thing again um understanding the mass and scale to um essentially the renderings don't look like what we think the project is going to look like with the polls the lack of room for Street trees the lack of adequate space for the polls vis-a-vis the building Street trees to fit in here um and to make a nice comfortable space nice comfortable spaces out in front of the building in commercial spaces we could say we could call it a streetscape a nice comfortable streetscape because it's not going to be slightly more comfortable but not not much more than what we what we have over at um The Bagel table building where there's nothing in front so what he was trying to do here Brendan because he said this at the meeting was he's trying to make comfortable little spaces out there so you could sit outside and have coffee whereas he didn't think that um that was possible at the bagel table which I totally agree because I I spent I guess it was part of the pandemic and I was trying to meet with people out there but there was no it wasn't comfortable to sit out there because there's cars going by there's no um there were no um umbrellas there's no canopy of any kind you know trees I have a couple trees out there one of them they ran over right away when they first put it in so they never replaced it yeah so this is that's that setback there is eight feet and when you go to the gray building it's 15.

moving across the slide in the middle there we need to continue to invest in technology and prioritize training as well as updating and improving our digital tools for students and for staff all aligned to the portrait of The Graduate and then finally making sure that our systems and structures all of our back office work is in alignment with the portrait of graduate to make sure that our operations support the best quality education we can for our students so those are four big statements but they are while they're specific they are General there's a lot of work that has to go in to make those all come alive and be actionable and actually get there someday and so we have objectives in year one of our five five year strategic plan the first objective develop the standard portrait of The Graduate we really need to Define that and it's a lot of work that is going to come out of the teaching and learning office of led by Dr Mann as well as incorporating instructional strategies that align to the portrait of The Graduate and Define those at the bottom part of the page the next thing we need to do align with technology the third strategy we need to integrate technology to enhance learning experiences remember that the technology we use now and really frankly our students when they're picking up a Chromebook it's probably as important as a pencil used to be technology is so important in our learning process and then the next is obviously supporting the culture of continuous Improvement and that's where the law of resistance and structures and while I'm not going to read through the bottom portion of that because we all can this will be posted in the newsletter that I send out tomorrow and then post it on the website and on Facebook I really wanted to walk through this one page that's very straightforward for everybody to have a sense of what the Strategic plan is but importantly when I talk when you look at the very bottom section there's a lot of actions that have to occur um this year to get us to the levels that we want to get to and that's called the District implementation plan we're still fleshing out the plan we'll be working on Tuesday at our leadership Advance with the administrative team to really flesh out all the details of how we're going to get there in year one to these goals we have so for example in creating a developing the standard portrait of The Graduate the first one there is the program of the portrait of The Graduate dispositions are clearly defined pre-K in grade 12.

uh and uh oci and yhs and I know we have um policies dealing with bullying and policies dealing with uh injuries uh as a basketball parent and a soccer parent and a student parent I'm familiar with those uh fortunately and I'm serious but um I feel like this policy as drafted should be put on hold and serve as the beginning of the conversation and not the end of one and I think to keep it short this evening that that's my ask that that the board and the district provide an opportunity for the community to learn first of all what's the current state of Parental notification on all of these topics how are these things being handled now and then as informed uh by school side staff in the district on where they see needs for improvement from the community where they see shortcomings once we're informed it's hard for us as Community to pass judgment on proposed policy when we're not sure exactly what we've already got in place and I know many of the things in this proposed policy are already addressed in one fashion or another in our existing policies in our district and at our school sites I've been on several psych councils and I know we spent a lot of time on a lot of those topics so I think that's that's it for tonight that's my ask that this be put on hold and we have a public forums and opportunities for the district to bring all of us up to speed on what we already have so instead of taking a very Broad and what appears to be fairly rigid and structured approach on top of what we've already got to be more racism and say Here's what we've got and here's where we need more thank you thank you can I say that Peter is the uh I don't know who you are director anyway I just want to thank you for all your tireless support of the math program because without Peter's hard work our children would not be able to do that so I think foreign I volunteered with the local Fresno Madera Navi National Alliance on Mental Illness and I was a instructor for their uh technology Basics which is a class for parents that teaches them about how to advocate for their children in different systems and one of those systems is the educational system so I looked up some information about transgender Youth and I found something called a child is a child's snapshot on California Children's Health lgbtq and it reports that one into transgender youth report contemplating suicide and that's in comparison to 15 of all other and you can find that report at uh children's partnership.org so that's a thing that hits really close to home for me and um I lost a loved one to Suicide I know other people have lost a loved one to suicide and um I wouldn't want to see the district between the parent and the child and their relationship because that parent is a safeguard especially with the mental health situation so I really applaud um for bringing up parental notification it's so important and people's lives are at risk you know it's real kids that are experiencing gender dysphoria they really they need their loving guidance from their parents and anything that stands in the way of that is just inappropriate so with that I just want to close um and I want you to really consider you know do you want to be holding the parent's hand and beat up the bathroom in a difficult situation or do you want to be the roadblock and and the division in the family thank you Terry Bailey thank you I'm Mary Bailey I'm a father of three they're all grown and gone which is a good thing I guess I do miss them I submitted the letter should I read it or should I I actually have a copy here okay so I'll try to come prepared [Music] um [Music] actually yeah I'm just a substitution this is to the ambassading school board thank you very much for allowing me to speak I'll just read the letter real quick and then I got a couple remarks and I'll be done dear school board members I'm a concerned local citizen a former University instructor former College director and a current substitute teacher at our local community this letter is in concern of the proposal to out lgbtq plus students this type of proposal is being introduced across California schools while that in of itself is alarming this proposal could adversely affect our most vulnerable students the far-right-wing minority continues to push their own beliefs in other on others this proposal must not be adopted I thought that we were going to vote on episode the proposals requiring school officials to out transgender kids effectively documenting and identifying the child this in of itself is a dangerous policy identifying children also has the potential to increase harassment and potential for abuse [Music] here are a few examples we have in our community of family by the way it's a family member of mine we're an lgbtq teenager was outed at a party and the father removed the teeth from the house kicked them out and disowned him because of his inversion to the kids way of life as a substitute teacher it's extremely important that LGBT students need respect and acceptance outing our children potentially extreme to extremist parents some parents are good some aren't I hate to say that can be sentimental to their well-being teachers administrators and staff support need to be focused on educating students not paying to extremist policies I oppose this most dangerous policy we are not a police state we are a community of individuals families that want the best for our kids overall not a community that is looking to convert children an all right idea of what a child should become this is dangerous and inhumane and I have just my closing new Arts gender is a complex issue for many but that's not my intention to talk about that tonight I'm just asking that we do not pass harmful policies that have been harmful to our students I have firsthand knowledge as I explained in my letter of what can happen I also have strong concerns about the records of the Rasmussen poll the research in this organization is in its biased and unreliable so I request that this proposal not be adopted and I appreciate the time that everybody's given me thank you [Music] Jenny Moore hello my name is Jenny Moore I'm a licensed clinical social worker um I've worked with counties both Madera as well as Mariposa in mental health specifically um and aside from that I'm a grandmother of a student who attends Bass Lake School District so I have a personal concern with this so I'm speaking obviously to the gender non-conforming proportion of The Proposal that went forward I think the rest of it has already been addressed and my concern is that what I have seen and all that I have read and regarding this suicidal ideations of children who are transgender come mostly mostly when they don't have a supportive Community when their parents are not supportive when their schools are not supported when their communities are not supported so I just have a few findings from the Trevor projects 2022 so it's recent National survey on lgbtq Youth and this is polling approximately 34 000 lgbtq youth ages 13 to 24 across the United States 45 of respondents being lgbtq of color and 48 being transgender or non-binary this is the fourth annual survey that they've done so 45 of lgbtq seriously considered attempting suicide in the past year nearly one in five transgender and non-binary youth attempted suicide and lgbtq youth of color reported higher rates than white peers lgbtq youth who felt social support from their family reported attempting suicide at less than half the rate of those who felt low or moderate social support we can't guarantee parents will be supported it would be lovely but we would not have the issues that we have in our society if parents are always supportive you were the one in three transgender and non non-binary youth found their home to be gender affirming lgbtq YouTube found their school to be lgbtq confirming or affirming reported lower rates of attempting suicide 60 of lgbtq Youth who wanted mental health care in the past year were not able to get it despite the efforts that have been put in place such as determining that children from age 12 and up are allowed already by law to seek mental health in other sensitive Care Health Care without parental involvement because we recognize that they need to have access to care that parents don't always provide lgbtq youth who live in a community that is accepting of lgbtq people reported significantly lower rates of attempting suicide than those who do not I have one other thing I'd like to say a consideration to make this to make in this is that frequently the devastation of suicide reaches beyond the losses related to the initial death and can result in clusters of suicide particularly amongst you it is important to realize that the impact of you not having their school as a safety net a safe place to speak their truth could also impact your work not questioning their gender or sexuality the safety of schools should not be threatened by forcing caring adults to out children in homes that may not be supportive of the child's truth and I have um copies of this portion of it that has full 28-page uh has has the web address for that if anyone would like a copy of that is something you can look it up for yourself to make the whole time would you mind giving that to Matera to include in thank you [Applause] okay how about [Music] Anthony is it Messner Meister good evening Lord of Trustees convenience good evening best late Administration I stand before you as a uh resident of this community for over 30 years many of you know that I teach AMU City Unified for over 30 years I also am standing before you as a representative of the California Teachers Association I am not only the president for Yosemite unified teacher Association I represent all of the small schools in Madera County I also sit on the state Council representing those as well as the president Madeira service center I am imploring the Board of Trustees to table this eliminated Etc this is opening bash Lake School District of for liability and legal there are a number of cases in front of the Department of Education the superintendent of schools for the state you are now on their list there very well might be launching an investigation if this moves forward I'm not saying that casually I'm seeing that with knowledge Tony Thurman's office has this on their desk the state attorney general has this on his desk I know that the intention of trustee for area 2 was well intended God bless each and every one of you for taking the commitment to stand up for our students please thank you thank you thank you I know you dedicate countless hours to our students but I also know that none of you here none of you here are here to injure students you are putting the staff you are putting the students in Jeopardy every one of you took a yoga and oath of office to uphold the Constitution this goes against your yoke of office growing up my legal name is Anthony Meister growing up I was referred to as Tony oh my God I was going by that name that wasn't on my birth certificate I think it's okay my grandmother was incest when my parents started calling me Tony because in her mind that equated to a we'll just say um unseeedy element in her native country I've never been arrested I'm not running a crime family okay um we're each and every one of us on staff is a mandatory reporter you're putting us in legal Jeopardy you are putting us in legal Jeopardy because we're torn between the two if a child does not feel comfortable enough to talk to their parents about some of their questions it gives you an indication we've had a number of students they've been kicked out of their home when they found their parents found out that they were pregnant do you think that was a nurturing family the answer would be no okay please please please this is a wolf in sheep's clothing I know the intention oh liability for Bass Lake and and this area is woefully and I know each and every one of you read the letter that I wrote I guarantee you that the funds that the state gives you are not to pay for attorney fees go forth with this and you'll be paying attorney fees [Music] [Applause] John Barrow thank you my name is John perro excuse me for my ad-lib notes tonight I was on my way back from San Diego and I got work to come to this meeting tonight but so background parental rights agenda historically parents have always been notified about their children's involvement in school issues and what's going on in schools such as overnight sporting events skiing trips even in the sexual education classes parents have the right to be notified and to opt out one of the Gentlemens who spoke here before said that this is the pushing an agenda I'll tell you what the agenda is the agenda is to sexualize our children Let me Give an example why is why why is it that the sexual issues are the only ones that are being excluded from the parents knowing about what okay you don't you're not excluded on ski trips they're not excluded on if if the student bought a gun if my son bought a gun to school or something I would be notified and rightly so what about the young girl the 12 or 14 year old girl that gets taken out without her parents notice gets an abortion and dies whose responsibility is that how would you feel or medically injured for the rest of her life we have to deal with transparency and parents are the the Guardians of their children not the school district you have the schools for 12 you have kids for 12 years and those 12 years should they should be taught in education not indoctrination the issue with this sexual orientation the social contagion that has gone on on social media the propaganda that you've heard that well look at the Bud Light thing look how that turned out to them you want to talk about social liability they went broke nothing happened because they pushed a vote with agenda and parents need is transparencies what school board members and what schools need are transparency and trust you allow this kind of nonsense to go on into school where you hide from the parents what's going on with their children if you think there's not an exodus from the public school system today stay tuned because parents will not tolerate them parents have the authority of their children parents of the Guardians of their children's form life you have them for 12 years so I think what we had to do is have transparents and we work with those students and we don't we don't drink a bring a woke agenda into the school that way we work with the community not against it thank you Leslie Smith hi everyone my name is Leslie Smith I have been a resident and a mother and a grandmother in the school district since 1978.
