2023-09-08 Pima County, AZ YouTube / asdbazgov transcript source: youtube ASDB Board Meeting (09/07/2023) · passage 1
I okay we will be starting in 5 4 3 2 good afternoon um it is now 4:02 and I'm going to call to order the asdb board meeting and can we go ahead with roll call Mike Gordon present Lynn Davidson pres Linda B not here Z kifil present Colette chman Chapman present yeah Katherine sinko present um oh Britney banan I'm present I think that's it two VES and two vacancies okay um agenda item 1.02 information item presentation a focus on accessibility in the master facility plan Albert Duff director of operations thank you board president kifil um and members of the ASB board as well as uh superintendent rikman and assistant superintendent Cooper and uh catch off I'd like to go ahead and present uh to you some information on the master facility plan and I think we have a presentation that can be loaded up uh if you could do that for me now please um so actually we could go to the next slide please I'm actually recovering from a cold so if I sound a bit off or need to clear my throat my apologies uh um so first thing that I wanted to cover because I know we've gone over this many times but I just wanted to make sure that we notate kind of the five main goals of the master facility plan the first one we've addressed in many meetings beforehand which is addressing our Antiquated buildings um so many of these buildings let me adjust this many of these buildings uh are reaching the end of their useful life the amount of maintenance cost as well as utility cost to keep them up and running is quite expensive whenever you consider our overall popul base the next it item which is kind of the focus for today or part of the focus is improve accessibility um these buildings were not designed with today's technology nor the need of what our students truly require for their education purposes um the other aspect of it as we move into the next goal would be improved spatialization which would be actually mostly for the Tucson campus which is actually reducing from 326,000 Ft down to approximately 180,000 sare ft we'll review a little bit more of that as we go through the presentation uh and you can see how we'll actually separate the campus out and some of the very critical decisions that the board will have uh moving forward um fourth one is energy conser conservation and ongoing maintenance energy conservation is actually uh not just a goal for us but it's a goal for uh Governor Hobbs uh who was just recently elected to try to reduce our water usage across the state as well as improve our energy utilization so this is things such as renewable energies as well as water reduction and then finally um and this is not in any particular order all of these are primary is also the creation of new programs to ensure that we have 22nd century kind of thought process of what we're delivering to our students that we are making sure that we have up-to-date CTE programs up-to-date science labs those kinds of programmatic aspects are included into our uh m facility plan and that we're not uh neglecting those as part of our goals uh next slide please this is the Phoenix campus of a general highlevel layout of what would be intended to um be accomplished this one's pretty clearcut there's no major changes to the footprint of the campus um but it is somewhat of the order that we would like to achieve I would like to note that this is in cooperation with l architecture and some of their recommendations on the best utilization of our campuses and also looking at programmatically what would work to shift things around and construction timelines so when we look at this there's been a few hands in the pot this hasn't been just my soul creation um so we definitely relied on subject matter experts to give that information of what they think would be best uh also looking at the fact of uh brought up in previous meetings of do we just buy new do we just build new new versus renovating what we have most of these buildings are either solid block construction uh have solid foundations the bones are good it's the rest of what I would call the arteries the hearts the uh the kidneys that need to be replaced out um but the bones are good on all of these buildings um and we've been able to keep those uh up and running with building renewal funds so there isn't any major concern with the actual structural Integrity of the buildings it's those internal components and kind of updating to meet the other five goals that we talked about just at the last slide so we'll move forward um I do encourage anybody that's watching online or here in the me uh the meeting today is If you go to board docs you can actually see this full presentation I highly encourage you to go ahead and find this look at this information uh and be able to kind of digest it in whole um so we're going to go ahead and go to the next slide to kind of look over what is the step process here for the Phoenix campus we are looking at doing this in a three fiscal year that doesn't mean construction would be done in three years this means that we would start fiscal preparations every year for the next three years construction on each one of these could last between 3 to four years so essentially what you're really looking at here is a 10-year plan with a three-year uh process or plan for each individual building uh the first and the only new construction that we would have within this plan is actually a new birth 5 center for the Phoenix campus the M building is a modular building on the Phoenix campus does not meet the needs for the education of our students in the Phoenix campus it's definitely Antiquated and would need to be replaced and the tctc building uh was also a modular building those are the I'd say the only two that don't have good bones uh so those are the two buildings that would be demolished and we would make way for a new larger facility that would accommodate also different kinds of disabilities to ensure that we have a full range of services in that partnership that we have elsewhere throughout the Phoenix metropolitan area um moving on from there the S Building is already vacant and we already have plans done this would become a new de Center um or a de Program Center building so um essentially where most of our educational as well as staff interpreters would reside as well as uh the de Mentor program within the Phoenix region would have centralized office there uh P building renovation that was designed originally as a vocational building we'd want to update that to a new CTE building uh so lots of new programs that could be housed inside of there yet to be determined uh but definitely gives us more of a opportunity to grow in those uh those areas of programmatic aspects uh the track and field currently if you've ever been on the Phoenix campus does not complete a circle so I don't know how we call it a track but it's it's kind of a a U-shaped that dead ends into a parking lot so we plan to address that by actually creating a four-lane track with a shot put with high jump with all of the athletic aspects that would be required to keep make sure that we meet healthy bodies healthy Minds within our students so this is where we're able to uh facilitate that it would not be AIA compliant doesn't have the room for that so we wouldn't be able to host track meets there isn't the room to do that when you overlay a AIA track we would have to demo the entire campus it would take over every building on there their their much larger in capacity than what you think for that full eight Lane track and everything that's needed but this would be a very solid practice field that our students could practice on then be able to go to AIA size tracks to be able to compete and not be behind their peers because right now they don't even have a full track to play on um in addition the track that's there now is not even lined it's just an asphalt kind of Road it was put in after the fact um during construction it was just something they had a little bit of extra Road material so they poured it into a track uh so this was something that was not student focused in the past that we would hope to rectify um next slide please ebuilding renovation so this is actually just more of an uplift uh making sure also that we have opportunities for uh flexible classroom space flexible office space as well as a student recre uh Recreation Center a lot of that's already in there but we would just be refreshing that building Northwest building uh would just receive a refreshing of that building once again giving it a kidney transplant um an L building renovation uh we've already done half of that building the other half we would go ahead and complete which would be the it section uh of that building and then uh we would also look at doing a transportation renovation in FY 26 or the proposal for FY 26 uh that would allow us to go ahead and actually put in um a renovation of true offices for all of our payroll staff and transportation staff if you go in there now it's there's a lot of cubicles that are not very conducive to private working environment that is critical as we work with student confidentiality so we'd be hoping to address that in that uh renovation next slide please W building renovation um this is very similar giving it a facelift I'm going to move through a little quickly here on this section cafeteria would be a facelift just general renovation maintenance and Warehouse there's currently not a warehouse on the campus so what we would be looking at doing here would be actually uh building a warehouse into the the actual maintenance section of that building um Spa would receive a renovation uh and building similar renovation and eventually middle school high school building that's the newest building on that campus would receive a renovation um so that's it for the Phoenix campus as you can see it's pretty straightforward and clean cut it's mostly Renovations nothing too controversial next slide please oh go ahead S I do have a question quickly um for the demolition of the M building and the TC TC preschool um where would those be relocated during that Demolition and so the new building it would be a single building to replace two so it actually we would demo tctc put it in the place where tctc is at and a portion of the playground then after that is completed we would go ahead and demo the M building and build a new playground gotcha so the office staff that will be in tctc could be relocated either to work from home work out of one of our Regional Offices there's opportunities to be able to flex those spaces gotcha okay thank you no problem um and we can go ahead and move back to the presentation for the Tucson campus so the Tucson campus is where we're going to have the reduction in space as we know this is 326,000 ft and moving it down to 180,000 ft would be comparable in size to the Phoenix campus so you're essentially mirroring what the Phoenix campus has um working with the architectural and engineering firm they had made the recommendation of utilizing the east side of our campus as the primary section of our campus mostly because of the high cost of rebuilding a gymnasium as well as food service buildings would be cost prohibitive in comparison to just renovating them and so being able to utilize those buildings as is or refreshed shall I say gives us a lot more opportunity to save cost rather than doing it on the west side of the campus so this would then uh leave the west side of the campus open for a potential sale or repurpose uh this is something that will be uh up to the board to decide um as far as the process of being able to do that we'll get into that in a little bit later but I do want to go through how we'll be able able to move all of our students onto one side of the campus and generally what that will look like I do want to emphasize though that there is a lot of room for flexibility of what a building would be intended for whereas Phoenix was a little bit more set in stone this one is definitely more malleable of we could alter the plant uh next slide please so Kachina uh in order to move everyone onto that side of the campus we need to be able to move building by building that's there over into something else so we would start with the Kachina building that was originally the elementary school building it's I would say mostly vacant we do have a couple of offices that are utilized in there um but it's Antiquated definitely needs a refresh we would change that into our business services uh building uh an IT building which currently is in the Apache dormatory so we would completely renovate that and be able to move this those staff in there uh the a that would leave our Apache dormatory open which then would be able to be renovated into an education building the overall design and footprint of it would actually work really well as an education building especially if you changed out some windows and did some uh major cosmetic changes to the design of the outside of the building as well as the inside but the square footage of it could either work as our high school or our elementary school um we have it here notated that it would be our elementary school but that could be changed if needed uh moving forward we'd be able to go ahead and take a look at our uh consolidating all of our dormatory aspects into one building the largest of the dormitories that currently exist is the pador that one's 14,000 square ft give or take and we would be able to separate that building into essentially four sections it's already split into three currently so we would have to just split the center section into a four uh double section that way we could have uh a blending of of different aspects but we'd be able to separate uh genders we'd be able bble to separate um uh as well as different disabilities and needs um so that would be how we would be able to make that work there's also a beautiful section in the back that could work very well for Courtyard and play area for students in that area to kind of keep it more manageable with labor as well um moving forward next slide please this then uh allows us to also um Remodel and change the the purpose of the too building this building could then become our blind programs just as Phoenix had the de programs tucon would have blind programs there uh this would house um also uh probably our Region 3 staff we'd have to work this in see what this looks like we might have to see what this will be but the hope would be and with the square footage be Region 3 staff for Tucson as well as the blind programs an AP program so all of that would be able to exist out of OKO giving them a solid home it's centrally located in the back of of the campus kind of in the center back right now it's really convenient for an AP aspect to be able to ship material in and out as a loading zone for those uh those areas that's why that building was particularly chosen um mechanic shop driveway this is just something that in the back area there that has been requested by ADOT who we partner with uh we would actually uh build in a new driveway for for our shop and our buses uh yua Soro dorm conversion this would be uh this one still needs some reworking but this would become our birth to five Center just kind of mirroring the design of of what would be in Phoenix in Tucson the backside of the campus would have a birth to five Center that would have its own loading and drop off zone so Phoenix and Tucson would mirror in their programmatic uh physical components uh we would have to build a new bus lot so there's a section for the new bus lot and then the elementary building conversion into middle school high school or it could stay as it currently is with Elementary Middle um and then we could build the high school out of Apache so there's still some room there of what we would do um as we work through this master facility process uh let's see uh next slide please uh gym renovation this would allow us to have multiple purposes uh as well as being able to renovate the gym as a whole maintenance and transportation I would consolidate all of my staff into the maintenance building for maintenance and Transportation uh we would end up having to build a new fence line uh going on number four C te OT PT Student Health Center would remain essentially the same but we'd be able to expand the CTE program we could possibly put the science lab in that location uh we could also put the science lab in a few other locations as well as we just built one uh and it's a beautiful science lab but we'd be able to repurpose all of that equipment all of it is able to come right out of there be moved into a new section if needed so there's still some room there um as we work through this process Food Service could also house a library it's large enough um so we could end up consolidating a library uh so far in our survey of this library is much needed and heavily used so it's definitely something that we want to have a dedicated home for the library that is fresh and purpose built for our students uh Administration and administration Annex Building are very last on the list I like to put our admin Folks at the bottom of the barrel um anyone will tell you that that if uh you come to me and you say you want the the nicest car and you're the admin I'll give you an Impala um so I I I'm not always nice about that um next slide please uh next item is energy and utility conservation benefits um so obviously we would be planning for Zero Escape or very low water usage uh in order to meet the governor's um uh goals and try to support her goals as we move through this process um and then we would end up also looking at having uh an evaluation of our HVAC systems uh lowf flow water fixtures uh installation of new updated Energy Management Systems which we may actually already be getting from the state of Arizona so there's some items here that are already coming into play uh and then we'd want to obviously maximize solar panels where we could um and that's kind of an interesting one either over covered parking or even creating breezeways and walkways of shade as we know our omm students spend a lot of time outside and going around in the sun is not ideal but building walkways that would be able to provide shade for that accessibility of uh and use that shade to generate energy is something that we would try to accomplish so there's a lot of work to do in there as well uh and then just Naturally by reducing the campus in half on the Tucson campus you'll have energy uh and conservation benefits from that as well uh next slide please uh the primary focus for today is is the accessibility um so we did get the accessibility uh report from the accessibility committee these are a few highlevel notations that were notated in that report that was given over to me uh this is obviously given over to our architectural engineering firm as well there's a lot more work to be done in this area take a breath okay give them guys I can I can go I'm sorry slow down a little bit um sorry about that uh even sick I can move faster than most people um so looking at the door access and egress um this is one area that we would definitely want to have uh a high level of focus as if you walk arus on campus it is a nightmare for anyone in the vi Community um and it is not friendly so we would definitely want to be able to make that a high priority as we focus of any outdoor area that it is accessible to anyone in a wheelchair anyone in a non-motorized wheelchair motorized wheelchair VI as well as our deaf uh individuals and how they communicate and walk and have to be able to have focus on two areas at one time so it is a complex aspect there uh there is a lot of ADA law and Rule but that doesn't always translate into best practice and so this is where some research will have to be done of bringing in the members from our deaa and blind community and asking them Point Blank does this design work for you and what do we need to change and so that's where we'll have a lot of partnership and collaboration whenever it comes to Ada accessibility that rolls into way points and signage so I am a cited and hearing person and I get lost in my campuses where is room 302 I can't tell you um so so I don't know who did the design for the the numbers or how that was worked out as well as way points and signage and where you're able to find where you need to go but it is not friendly um I don't know if it was done on purpose it almost feels that way uh so we definitely want to change that and that is something that is actually in the architectural and Engineering plan specifically spelled out to be able to hyper focus on how that Waypoint and signage will work uh improv sound system in key areas that meet the needs of our population so this is many aspects but in key areas such as the uh Spa which is the sports and Performing Art Center really hope we can change the name of that one day um as I think it it deserves a better name um there's uh the playgrounds which a lot of our students are Mobility challenged um anyone that works in the the playground field will tell you that the wood chips are accessible they are not and I can see uh board member Buchanan who's had experience with these wood chips that are supposedly wheelchair accessible they're not U so por and play is a great option Po and play is very expensive and so this is one of those things where it's definitely a priority for us but it's also something that we'll have to make sure is in there as the dollar value that it truly is accessible for those students on the playground we have our little ones in preschool five out of the kids can go play that sixth one can't and that's not fair nor is it okay and so hopefully with por and play surfacing we'll be able to address that so that's one of the major aspects um ADA Compliant seating for all types of bodies we're not all built the same so we need to make sure that as we build our spaces and where we're at we're actually have seating that accommodates different kinds of bodies and different kinds of Mobility tools for them to be able to work in um and then this is just the beginning we have had some initial designs that have come out from the Texas school from the deaf when they did their Master facility planning for design for Deaf individuals and how their best uh design criteria is I've taken that information and given it over to the accessibility committee to review to ensure that it's still relevant as well as some best practices on the vi side of what works for design criteria so we can build that into the master facility plan that way we can move that information into the design actual aspects when we're doing each individual floor plan uh next slide please so next steps uh we have a stakeholder survey up uh superintendent rikman announced that I would say about 10 days ago maybe less we already have over 90 responses um I really hope anyone listening here today please go to as.

2023-09-08 Jennings County, IN YouTube / JCSC Stream transcript source: youtube Jennings County School Corporation Board Meeting - 09/7/2023 · passage 1
call the meeting the order and we'll start with the pledge I pledge alance to the flag of the United States stes of America and to the Republic for which it stands one nation under God indivisible with liberty and justice for all want to welcome everyone to the meeting um tonight just a reminder that we are live live streaming the um board meeting this evening so welcome those who have joined as well um so we'll start with um consent agenda um if I can have a motion to approve that Mo I have a motion by Earl do I have a second second by Travis any discussion all those in favor 70 and now we'll ask if there's anybody present who would like to speak with an item that is on the agenda or any other topic hearing none we'll go down under old business um under Finance the budget presentation Phil yes uh we're doing a third present ation of the budget we normally don't but with the bond issuance happening we've got updated AV numbers from the state and that in turn adjusts our debt and Ops stuff so we go to slide four the change one of the main changes is the advertised debt fund is going to be it was 37 now it's going to be 43 because we've added that potential payment in uh July of 2024 next slide that change with slide 11 it's the exact same number but it's just on slide 11 also in its own format and then the more important one is on slide 17 what you're going to see there is a change in the debt to Ops percentages on the estimated actual the advertised uh stayed the same from that standpoint but the estimated actual has been adjusted to fit the new debt with the goal of it being very similar to what it was this year and then the last one would be page 19 it's just a recap and it shows that number also it's a 4351 so from an inform standpoint that's pretty much it it lers some questions I have any questions on that just one for the public this will not raise J scouting taxes that's the intent thank all right this was an inform so um any other questions so philli next capital budget next up is the capital budget which I'm just going to show you slide three of that one and basically there is no changes in that uh it's just like it was two weeks ago but with that I also was going to ask approval I give permission to advertise the capital budget plan Philip is asking for permission to advertise capital budget plan do I have a motion so mov motion my a second second second by Cheryl any discussion all those in favor 70 next up is the bus replacement plan same situation there we'll just go to slide three and there's not going to be any changes to it either uh from the last meeting two weeks ago and I again I'm asking approval to get permission to advertise the bus replacement plan okay asking for approval to advertise the bus replacement plan I have motion motion by Mary Lyn do I have a second second by um Chelsea sorry um any discussion all those in favor 70 now we'll go down under new business programs we have an e presentation pass those down there absolutely all right um we go ahead and go to the next SL what I want to go over is just some basics of our El programming and kind of what we do and what numbers we're looking at um to start off we do belong to a title 3 Consortium which um what happens is with title 3 money it gets sent to them and then they divy out the things that they have um the wach valley education Consortium is amazing and I will tell you we get more than what we put into it um we get free PD opportuni so any time there's PD we want to go to or we want to send somebody to um if it's title three related we get that for free most of the times that would be300 or $400 um I took last year there was five of us that were going to go to the title three um their yearly title three meeting where they had a bunch of different workshops and things about different ways we can help with our eel or ml which they actually call multilingual Learners and it would have been $350 to go we got it free um they offer free PD pops so every month they send PD opportunities through webinars um we can send those out to the teachers if they're interested I share those with our people running El and if they've had somebody ask about a specific type of PD they can send them that that is all free they do monthly El T meetings so any of our teachers that are working in the El realm they can attend those um get tips and tricks and things that to help them anything if there's a new program out there they think would be good they share that with them at that um we get quarterly title three updates so we get invited to webinars with them um access to free online materials so they have some Elementary levels the biggest area but they have things that the kids can do on iPads and programs on the Chromebooks the students can do to help with their language acquisition and then uh they offer the scop Train the trainer so it's three days in the summer and two days that Following fall where they will train people to be a scop trainer and I'm going to go into what SC up is here in a minute um and we've actually sent a couple people already um and we're looking at sending more and we get that training for free all we ever have to pay for is if we need to get them a hotel for the night and food for while they're there but the actual training itself is free and once we have enough of those we're already starting to train our own staff but if I think we want to have a few more that can be trainers just to give us a little bit more go to the next one this is what scop is so we talk about scop train the trainer scop is sheltered instruction observation protocol all it is is a it's a research B based method it's how to teach our English language Learners or multilingual Learners how to teach them the same content our Jad kids are getting so it's just a way of presenting in material that makes it easier for them to understand are ways that we can have them present material back to us so we can check for Mastery it's very much like when we talk about Universal Design for Learning it's kind of like a Universal Design for Learning for our multilangual Learners and it goes through here like all of the different parts of it lesson prep building background knowledge um comprehension strategies interacting with them how to practice and how to get them to apply what their learning and then the lesson delivery and how to review and assess if they're mastering what we've actually taught so to the next slide we're going to look at um weeda levels here in a minute and I wanted you to understand what those weda levels are I know it's kind of hard to read if you want a bigger copy of this I can get you a bigger copy of this level one is that entering okay that's our lowest level those are the ones that sometimes don't even have any English language so or they have very minimal we use a lot of pictures a lot of labeling things making those connections level two is our beginning so they're a little bit higher three developing that's kind of your middle of the road they can read some they can communicate four is expanding when they get to that four they're really participating in that genetic Class A lot better they may still have a few gaps but it's much better at five in Indiana they're considered fully English proficient so at that point in Indiana some other states have different levels but in Indiana five is fully English proficient at that point they test out of weda and out of receiving e services and then we just follow them for two years to make sure they don't regress so when we start looking at that um that's what these levels mean okay keep that all right next one this is the number of el students or ml students we have in each School I've shown you the last five years it's actually not gone up a ton from some previous years but we are seeing an increase when we get to looking at the weeda levels in a minute you'll see where some of our higher needs are um back in 1920 we were at 115 where we're seeing some of the bigger jumps is at secondary if you look at Middle School and High School in 1920 Middle School only had 12 this year they have 22 um the high school in 1920 had 12 and then they dropped a little bit now they're up to 8 um Sand Creek has gone up and down they pretty much stay steady Northern Elementary's gone down a little bit um the thing to remember this this year we're seeing an increase of people moving into the county um we have actually done 33 screeners when a student moves in and they put anything on their home language survey other than English if they've never been in Indi Indiana school before or been screened before we have to screen them within 10 days of it roll so what we do is we screen them if they screen a five or higher we just watch them and put them on our watch list if they screen four or below then they get eel Services there were 303 students screened at the beginning of the school year only seven of them tested out so these numbers reflect an increase of what we would have had and we're continuing to see we've already heard of I believe four more that are supposed to be enrolling in September and so we anticipate more of them moving in next screen when we look at the weeda levels this is by school you know Brush Creek only has the three students one is a level two and one and two of them are level four so two of them we're hoping we test out this year that we're contining to work with them on those skills and we can get them to up to that next level um Grand doesn't have any of them right now Hayden they're kind of spread out two level ones one level two two level threes one level four North for elementary again it's pretty even four four2 and six Sand Creek um think about it 15 level ones those are people who speak very little to know English that's a lot when you're talking about elementary students and trying to teach them um six level twos then we have 16 level fours or threes and five level fours um CPO doesn't have any this year they have in the past they just don't happen to have any this year Middle School luckily we have the largest percentage of those are in a level four um but we do still have several and the ones we have moving in are a lot of times non- English speakers we're getting a lot of students that we are their first US school um we've had several that have moved in um high school we have four three 12 and nine so that's just kind of the breakdown next slide and this is just by grade so you can see throughout the district the grade level um and their levels obviously kindergarten we have more level ones than we would we get up to grade 12 they're they're higher but we do have some if you look in fourth grade fourth grade is a pretty big bubble um you're looking at level ones twos and threes that's a bigger percentage there so in eth grade we actually have seven level fours level three so we're seeing in the later grades which means we're doing something if they're starting off at level ones and twos we are seeing some growth we obviously would like to see more growth um so that just kind of gives the breakdown by grade next slide now here's what we do the services we give at the elementary if they're a level one up to a 2.9 they get 30 minutes a day pull out with either the El and the PA or the par depending on the day and they get additional support in the classroom so sometimes that par pulls them out and then that's every single day and then another time during the day they might push into that classroom at levels three to 3.4 a little smaller group they get 30 minutes a day pull out with the T and or the Paris so they don't need necessarily as much push into the classroom so we're doing a little more pull out of just kind of building those skills a 3.5 to a 4.9 they get 30 minutes three days a week so they don't get quite as much sometimes they push in sometimes they pull out by the El the parah um it just depends on what the teachers are saying they need for that student we rely on those gened teachers to help us you know get that kind of information Middle School they have one dedicated El period that's available to all of them um they have an opportunity to obviously if they're a Spanish speaker they want to enroll in Spanish so they're getting a little bit more of that here's what the English is here's what Spanish is so they get some of that and we do have a halftime e paros that's dedicated to helping students they're there in the morning we have had a hard time filling that position um right now we we do have as of today um somebody filling in that halftime position at the middle school at least through October um then hoping by between now and then we can have another person hired next slide high school we have the dedicated eel period every day so they actually have two periods um so what they're doing is they have it's the last period on Blue days and the first period on white days they have a period where they work on language acquisition and homework help um and then the halftime here in the afternoons goes to the high school to work with them available to all of our schools is the curriculum we have provided curriculum Continental Press um at the middle school they use a program called boses um that's designed for working with our El ml students um then they have other things that they can use we have a newcomer program through Continental Press so if they're a newcomer it's teaching them some of the basics ABCs numbers things that they're going to need to be able to function in soci how to ask where the bathroom is how to you know ask what's for lunch little things teaching them that stuff to begin with and then building on that um we have teach teacher assistance with tools and methods to teach so I know at the high school um the our El she sent out tips and tricks the beginning here you have this student in class this is what would be good for them if you need help you know send me a message and so she has done some little after school and trainings during her prep teaching them how to translate stuff and do things like that um and that's training and assistance to help with translating the materials um scop training is available to interested teachers we did a basic scop training last spring um in April where we brought the lady who runs our wec our consorti came down we had I opened it up to 40 teachers we paid them for after school hours and they I took the 40 first 40 that signed up and they were paid to stay after to learn about scup and how to teach our English language Learners in the classroom um and then now we are starting with some of the ones we have that know SC up and are able to train going around and offering it to teachers who would like to be SC up trained and doing a little small group instruction um we've trained three elementary teachers so far this year um and opening up to others who want to be training throughout the whole District next slide now here's up updates here's the things that we're planning or we're working on we want to train more people on the scup model if anybody else was interested in becoming a trainer we would happily send them to that training in the summer that L um specific protocol we're developing protocol for how to place them at the middle school and high school specifically making sure all of our ones and twos are getting in that English language class sometimes they don't take an elective from them but sometimes I look at the elective isn't going to do anything if they can't speak the language so let's get them in and give them time to learn the language um I have told them to add a second El period of Middle School um currently she just has the one so they're going to be moving some schedules around for her um so that she can have a second dedicated period to helping those students helping with homework helping with translating just getting in there and and helping them learn the language um offering staff training um at either whole school department meetings for our smaller schools for our bigger schools department meetings training them how to translate materials training them how to work with specific students where they can ask how do I teach this student how do I do this or how do I do that giving them specific trainings uh available for all of our teachers in the corporation we're working on purchasing programs um some of our teachers have been looking at other program that we can purchase that will help with translating um Tracy Martin of the high school has found that will translate a video into another language and so um we're looking at purchasing that so that we can share that out with the teachers whether they have to send them to the El and that person translate sends it back or whether the teachers are comfortable enough to trans to use the translation tool themselves so it's just a matter of getting that information out to them so that's pretty much what we're doing you know obviously we want to see things grow we want to see more supports for them so quick question yes my math right 121 students are level four and Below rough do they take the state test they do they take actually an extra test they take the waeda test in January and February which measures their English language acquisition in Reading Writing spelling speaking read so is that in English or Spanish or it's in English and then they do take I learn okay and the PSAT and the SAT so the kids that can't speak hardly it's going to be tough it's going to be very tough okay my point is and those scores come up too and those scores go in the whole school system yes that affects yes J County Schools yes so we've got to help them build that language I understand that but it seems like to me it'd be held separate to I know Common Sense is yeah it's one of those things so we want to make sure those kids are growing as quick as quickly as we can get them to grow because it does impact our scho but it affects the whole school thank you so what's that look like in a classroom if you have a teacher that has one or two or how many of kids that are at level one are we expecting that teacher to stop what they're doing translate something for that student I mean how does that look how's that even possible that not necessarily like to stop the lesson what it would be is looking at okay if they know ahead of time I'm going to be doing this lesson and I'm GNA have this assignment on you know this on the Civil War planning ahead a little bit that we don't want our tools to translate to be super complicated we want them to be something where they can put it in Click a button and it translates so they can do that ahead of time if it's not something that is easily translatable taking it to that El and saying here can you translate this for me but making sure they get it to them you know a few days in advance and they'll translate it and get it back to the teacher so you think that's happen happening at in practice though because what I'm hearing from teachers is they'll have kids in their class and they're just throwing their hands up they're like I doing the best I can but I've got a kid that cannot speak our langu he's a level one I don't have the translation RS if I do am I supposed to do it at home I mean I think what can we do to help our teachers I mean do we expect them to go to extra training and do that stuff at all no not necessarily um it's a matter of getting them the assistance they need like so I said we're trying to buy some more tools that will make it more simple so that they can translate what they need kind of even on the Fly uh the students that speak no English should have an iPad that will help translate we're looking at some different things with some earbuds so that they can put an earbud in and at least be able to communicate with the teacher um I think there's a combination too it is I think one is US recognizing the need especially at secondary and later in the agenda we're actually asking for some additional e support for our teachers because of the need the other is we were walking through and doing an observation of the high school maybe a week ago and um helping each other we a lot of that started to happen a teacher was trying to get something translated and the button on Google translate you can click wasn't working she immediately called the E support teacher in the building and she was quickly helping her figure out how to do that on the fly but I think that critically you have to have that staff to support right somebody has to be able to pick up a phone and call and a assistant come help or another teacher with that expertise so I think there's a couple things we've got to look at can we get programs that are easy to use and I think Mandy's looking and trying to upgrade that but second we we do have Staffing support especially when teachers have a lot of students who are level one or two with limited English Proficiency in the classroom because that lesson flow has to go on but at the same time we want to make sure all kids are engaged so I think those are two like big pieces we we're working and one of the things I encourage them to do and I know it's hard on some teachers as far as you might have three level ones in your class versus three teachers having each a level one because then if we have that PA position we get send the par in and the can doing a lot of that for the teacher right there in that moment so the teacher can continue that's our goal is to have that support in the classroom with the kids and we have a a good flow with that at elementary you see it frequently walk through the building kids clustered around a table and getting extra support we're needing to increase that support at secondary so if you have like the support person in a building they're teaching maybe one period a day where they're teaching those level one kids but they're teaching classes the other five six whatever periods they have so when Amy calls if that person is in their history class so they can't help with in right so that would be where the parent could step out and go help and that's why I want to increase the amount of time we have with our e kids like at the middle school they only have the one dedicated period they need another period they need that extra period where she can go out they really probably a couple of extra periods and that's going to be a slow process because we can't pull everything away but giving that extra period in there where maybe it's the Paras working with them on homework and that El teacher is going into the classroom and also our students getting acclimated to our school system we screened 30 new students this year so students we've had previously know where to access things on their device to help when there's something they don't understand what to click and how to get to it if they're brand new to us they've not had a chance to get used to all of those tools that we have yet so you know 30 new students is a large number across the corporation to make sure we're getting everyone acclimated at what's available so and I think that if we keep having turn over like that every year even if our total number stay stable we have different students coming in and out that's a whole another need that we have to address well I appreciate you put this together that does help do the teachers I mean I know they probably but they have this as well I mean do they know every teacher know that's available we're going to go over it with all of them again um we have had conversations in many of the buildings making sure that they know what supports they have and I will tell you I can't thank you guys enough for that halftime e High ability person because it has been a huge help having that extra halftime person to be able to go out and help some of our kids because she some of our teachers she's the one going out and training the teachers and it's amazing any other go ahead no go ahead have we ever thought about summer school on language maybe uh having kids in that move in that can't speak but maybe having a summer school where we teach English which would help us uh maybe get ahead of the all I don't it'd be interesting data to pull when we had summer school we included our English language Learners so it' be interesting to go back and look at that data separately to see how much impacted them one other question did did somebody not say the last time that we not supposed to be translated stuff so it's kind of a variance right so when they test they have to test completely in English and so it is a process of learning right how to get those supports in place to understand um what material they're looking at on the test and in the class then also it's that concept of being immersed that's what scop means being immersed in English you're going to pick up more vocabulary that way then if everything's translated you're not seeing English very fre but at the secondary level when we're saying we want them to to learn these social studies skills or these science skills are we grading them on their ability to read and speak English are we going to grade them on their ability to learn social studies and science so that's when we tend to translate to make sure they're also getting the content any other questions okay that item wasn't in formed so we'll go down to professional staff we have some recommendations yes pleaseing for approval for Tara Henry to be hired as a norer elementary teacher and for Addie lamb um to be approved as a Brush Creek Elementary title one teacher entertain a motion to accept those motion by Pat to have second second by Travis any discussion all those in favor seven o um next we have an additional recommendation yes asking you to um saying is don't ask questions tonight you can ask questions tonight you to I'm not going to know the answers as well as your boy does but you can feel free to ask them all you'd like so that item isn't inform so please make sure you review that prior to the next board and this is standard we do it every fall this a standard thing um okay down under relations we have an ivtech Community College we have several ones in a row here so first one is approving our dual credit with ivtech I have we do this every year so asking for Renewal do we want to do all of these as a group that sounds great 2023-09-08 Naugatuck Valley Planning Region, CT YouTube / CPS Video transcript source: youtube Board of Education 9-7-23 · passage 1
good evening everyone Mr Gripper here miss ham here miss Harrigan Mr Martelli here Mr peragini here Ms Rosenberg here Mr White Mr chairman you do have a quorum thank you Vincent I ask that we stand for the Pledge of Allegiance allegiance to the flag of the Republic okay well good evening and welcome everyone to this chilly summer evening at least the time at least in the town council chambers uh we have a lot to cover tonight but before we get into it I'll ask if there are any members of the audience that wish to address the Board of Education seeing as there are none we're going to move to a presentations we actually have um Mr gossenberg who's the chair of our next Generation School building committee as well as Architects from techdon and we're gonna get an update on the new North End and Norton schools and I think see a little bit of design too so how do you guys want to proceed you want to come at the table and use the microphone or I think you're set up 15 second intro and then please do Richard yeah you can use that or the one at the podium but everyone works the Next Generation School business committee our school building committee rather has been uh working over the last several months a number of meetings hired the staff that we needed and have been working on the design um we have a working group of Staff members and we also have committee members who have been looking at this we've finished the first of three development phases this is called schematic design it's fairly detailed but it still has a long way to go before everything is finished the schematic design for the North End School was finished uh about a month or so ago the committee then sent that information out to estimators looked at the um approximate costs of the building and worked and brought the cost and the design into you know uh so that they were the same the Norton school we have just gotten the estimations and we have an upcoming meeting to take a look at that but we wanted you to have a look at what we've designed so far so we've got some pictures for you today and a sense of a little bit of the process that we've gone through and from that I'll took a ticket over to Justin and Jeff from tecton and Rich and Laurel who's here also from arcadis and Ong Richard thank you we're actually uh welcome the Board of Ed move down to the audience because I'm good how are you Jeff it's ramble busy doing here thank you good evening Mr chair members of the board Justin Hopkins I'm an associate principal and project manager at techton Architects and again Jeff wazinski principal in charge of the project so we have I believe I make this joke every time but we have a brief two-hour uh presentation for you tonight now uh we want to go over uh summary and schedule a bit about where we are where we've been some of our visioning those of you who can recall our presentation from a couple months ago we we delved a little bit more in detail of our visioning process but we want to just give a brief overview as kind of a station point for the schematic design we'll then get into the North End and Norton schematic design and also talk about our current steps with our interior design and design development and then we'll wrap up with our Roadshow of upcoming events within the community so just as a reminder our two projects North End School in Norton Elementary School um by and large the same program the same student population K to six the only distinction is the North End Elementary School has our Early Childhood Program that is uh basically uh brought over from Darcy so that distinction accounts for the inquiries and enrollment of students at the North End as well as building area and overall total project cost as Rich had mentioned where we are in the design phase schedule we're at the end of schematic design uh beginning of design development so in schematic design we are primarily trying to get put the guardrails on the project understand the size of the building what it generally looks like making sure that we have the appropriate program and their necessary adjacencies in other words their proximity to one another we will then be getting into design development which is more a say let's say a room by room analysis or really a development of the criteria that goes on in each of the spaces uh once we conclude that uh phase we'll go through another round of cost estimation we'll have another report back uh to this board uh and then start a construction documentation process um where it's really heads down development of the details making sure that we're detailing everything uh in a tight set of documents so that we can have some assurances during bidding that we're getting accurate numbers and limiting the amount of potential changes during construction so this is a long-winded way of describing that we're kind of in the first finishing the first phase of a process that is going to take us to next summer when we will have our construction documents complete and go through the state approval process for bidding in Fall of 2024.

2023-09-08 Santa Clara County, CA YouTube / AlumRock TV transcript source: youtube Special Board Meeting/Board Study Session · passage 1
I love that picture he's so sweet okay well she's got to tell you now and the council board and the one I said just about it must be magic but to make this see that she's not alone and then yesterday and they have respect me with me but they went and into arthritis Meadows it was last night yes but he called me early on thank you I know some smallities [Music] depression but um four commercials no I wonder if foreign that's right so with that is now 6 30. ladies recipes [Music] today is a special board meeting of September 14th 2023 sorry September 7th I'm sorry for that at 6 30 PM members of the board in attendance president MIM fam vice president clerk Andres Quintero member Linda Chavez member Andrea Flores Shelton here members of administration superintendent Dr Bauer present s so with that the Board of Trustees School District foreign thank you joining me she's running a little late uh Maria magical she's a project architect and project manager of overstating this effort um she's actually is coming from Sunnyvale where we're implementing one of the projects that results from their long pages nonetheless I'm here to focus on Alum Rock and all this good work so we'll give you a little process of the summary where we've been and how we got to where we are today we'll give you a little history lesson on um the campus movement projects have been completed recently in our incredibly in process um talk about where the funds that may be coming from to to these projects and give me some some data as far as what the other members of your community have prioritized or expressed you know as the most important ones at your campus and with all that background information being able to have an informative session regarding the priorities so as Caldera mentioned we started about a year ago we moved up in September of last year since then we've had weekly meetings for the steering committee and your um team we've had five meetings with the facility development committee that Core group of folks represented the districts of broader community members we met with your design guidelines committee spending a two-day workshop developing the vision of space with spiral Rock following up with that Workshop there were 12 focus group meetings which we call in on the details of those stages of the places three interactions with your school side committees so each School site was asked for with many albums that are processed a little bit later in the presentation there were three interactions a specific new part that focused on the streets we have three groups um meeting with your students over at Ocala Ryan and Hubbard from the student's perspective on these three town hall meetings it was all the same info but spread across three week updates to try to reach um the most useful religious process mostly accessible for people to provide input on Community survey was available in English Spanish okay actually in 3081 responsibility those three venues and the students survey uh brought in another 2017 before student survey responses giving us a total kind of opportunity for input that totals in about 2850 voices of all the enrolled into this plan there's also integration with other processes with the district is engaging with their Workforce housing efforts and and solar institutions so all of this this effort and bring back to this program we're looking to build equity through this whole process and I'll be coming back to this slide a few times in this presentation because we always want things grounded in in that Vision on the targets we don't lose our way we want this process to be well informed using data as the driver from high decisions we want this process and it's fully facilities that result from this process to support the community and to be high quality to serve the students best role in that Workforce housing component to not only support the students but Provide support um for teachers and staff specifically uh support middle school students and see how the facilities can be brought by equity and support for all students depending upon their grade level and specific developmental needs business process was engaged Unity and so it's previously yeah reviewed our previous slide and this process of the resulting projects must be implemented must be able to have a successful rollout you can't just be a good picture a map that lives on a website that must have successful implementation and then follow-up professional development so that the teachers and staff students using that space are using them to their highest of course time this is in which our rock is supporting your guiding principles serving your families and communities I'm sure these these facilities that's celebrating the diversity of the community collaborating in this community so that we get we hear everyone's input and be transparency in the process and the messaging guiding principles these were specifically developed for the equipment fee fishing Workshop so when we're looking at learning environments empowering students to become expert Learners like long Learners writing high-level collaboration in that learning environment provide equity for students and their families and support the student holistically in mind so it's great to have that broader Vision when it's grounded in reality and acknowledge the challenges that Alan Robert the district is facing your older site yeah aging infrastructure and those new upgrades to really bring these facilities forward for a next gen learning uh like most districts in California you are experiencing and are projected to experience that define an enrollment you are competing with neighboring District in terms of the surrounding districts building new facilities and Specialty programs that off at the districts are offering to find exclusive charter schools so this is community minimizing I don't see it on my screen okay because you're you're moving forward with slides right somebody yeah so the process uh initially kicked off with an effort of reviewing all of the facilities and with our partnering with consulting firm Bureau Veritas who did a very deep assessment of the condition of each facility looking at building itself envelopes from the structure Interiors such as carpeting ceiling tiles lighting other Building Systems Plumbing utilities that could be seen from the surface of no digging underground to analyze these facilities but just yet trying to yeah all right the experts just touch the screen yes so taking a look at other equipment and Furnishings um not the furniture itself but um like caseworkers safe some countertops that sort of thing with the classroom other side improvements like you all of these things across all campuses and develop these reports that identified as costs associated with immediate needs because they're invariantly identified as being in in poor condition or in District and then a a 10-year Lookout of based on when a system was was installed and the grenade use the life of that item when can we anticipate that item needing to be replaced so what you see on the screen is uh kind of raining a heat map if you will showing which sites were in I'll call it better conditions so that you had a lower cost per start but over the next 10 years of repair and weekend items compared to the sites that then trickle down to the brown color that had a higher rate of repair and maintenance per square footage so this is the the highest and score could be is five so we're not out of the woods with the sites that are identified in better condition there still is a lot of history um so that was for the the quantitative dating site that we were looking at um we also rolled in and follow the speed of data speaking with the people who live and bring the science every day and engaging with the school site committees so at the onset of the process we asked each site to form a School site committee that would be something that already exists but we have some recommendations they'd like to pull additional books together so approximately six to nine members depending on the school type and their their engagements with a site visually Workshop where we met with the suicide committee on-site interview then had some point in questions familiar with your campuses and seeing how they're being used here from the books um again students yeah the town hall meeting where we displayed the draft long-range plans ask for input and then following that town hall meeting Hall of appointment uh specifically with the principal and anyone else they wanted to invite to say all right here's what we heard from the town hall let's see how we can adjust the draft diagrams to make sure this room supports each student so it was a layered layered effort to develop the Long Beach site diagram so on the left side you see an existing campus um on the right side you see the proposed campus lots of different things going on which is solution if you recognize it for material um so the the proposed solution was kind of varied in our approaches based on a tier level which I'll just expect at a moment and just the existing facility itself where we leverage these Instinct facilities so that we're not just building new things everywhere you know we're trying to be responsible with um with the amount that is being proposed so as we approach each site and we divided into the working with District leadership divided the totally in school sites into three tier levels and that was partly due to trying to manage the beliefs that will be the resulting process I already know that LMR has a limited funding availability currently so just to make sure that these projects can be impactful we took a tiered approach um three levels of Tears please do not denote any certified organization at this point just different approaches to campuses a campus that was identified as a tier one site uh it was a site that you can see some school level shifts meaning it went from a tk8 site to a tk5 elementary school um and the tier one schools also Incorporated Vision projects that resulted from our campus Edition and and spec vision and workshops to two sites School level state of things so an elementary school it means an elementary school that applied beneficiary project and tier three sites remain at school level that is but we're primarily targeting modernization outdoor and chair of the campuses to your approach by school sites foreign schools if it had some other shifts going on so at Avalon's day and how long day two three which are currently TK through eight it was sixth seventh and 8th graders were pulled from those campuses in this long range cool hold from those campuses and food to overexpired transitional iron from a TKA tk5 Elementary to a dual version Middle School serving grade sixth grade that's what I mean by two chairs uh Ben painter and Shepherd Middle uh they you know the intern Elementary School Shepherd Middle School week since they're on the same bottle of land they're right next door to one another we treated those two as a unified TPA inside by sharing the NPR and at George Middle School we're looking to attend the schematic campus from uh Assisted Living Middle School to import campus why are we doing all these shifts and all these moves and thinking very broadly a little bit of backing up a long-range facilities plan you know it gives more of a marathon but it was experience it's a long-term Vision that should be updated and Revisited every three to five years to make sure your demographic projections are still holding true things yourself Surprises with that um and that all of the goals and the vision projects that were developed now in time are so relevant this March forward in time for that 10 years or that 15-year um finishing our roadmap to build um you as districts have already been doing some good work today you want to acknowledge the projects that have been completed shade structures certain campuses and dining and you know rested for Fighters and relief from outdoor environments are out there on hard courts um let's see the power reports caving and very asphalt improvements have been done recently and possibly exciting to see on the screen a marquis signage it may seem like a nice to have sort of thing but this would be something that really is more about avgi should be able to clearly identify your student site and various 88 upgrades so that schools are accessible not only conversation standpoint but if we sort of all bodies and abilities so the projects such as Locker Replacements middle and network infrastructure district-wide computers for the projects and progress down the stream and there's um projects District five smart boards and costume technology upgrades and upgrades to cannibal systems sanitary display structures Ada and continuing this fading improvement district by additional classrooms Edition the first hat Replacements at these two sites this uh and we're Learning Classroom projects that we saw the academy is exploring various expensive improvements for our key signage and these efforts that I highlighted in red that are all the most important uh with one another prescription efficiency plan because of course students plan with first housing and other analysis came together so as we as we analyze new sites and look towards the future we want to be honoring who work that's being done today try not to do bigger and to do so um one questions luckily um funding that can be allocated to the projects identified in the long-range plan over on the left side are your current bonds for measure s and remaining winning dollars for measure I those add up to about 200 million on the left side or what has already been allocated so we can kind of do the math to see all right where what can we play with what can we prioritize to starting at the bottom um 50 million has been allocated towards the workforce housing implementation um additional funds have been allocated towards the HVAC projects at the process objects that I just recent admission on the slide before this from that we have about 127 million 662 000 left for total unallocated funds uh LPA we never recommend prioritizing projects all the way up to the total and allocated funds because one of you to bring into varied housing what if there are some unknown costs what if um that's when you pull back 10 contingency for those unknowns so we take that 127 million back out that 10 contingency and now as we look towards prioritization we have about the very important team we'll call it 0.9 million uh to allocate towards these long-range facility projects remember to say I think they teach today about the time anything to have the cost estimate and now you can see it um so this cost estimate um is here see this um by School site and that total uh available tour applications the Bay Area maybe 10 digits and so unfortunately is the place that we live in and as conservatives as as conservative as we feel comfortable going without shaking do you actually want to make sure that you're looking at realistic cost estimates and as you implement these projects hoping to find some savings through this implementation because I know this is the big numbers this is a number of heading is the that what putting together everybody needs and wants this is what it comes out to me um if we were to listen to every voice right in those four thousand and something anybody that's what that means I just wanted to verify so that everybody that's why I say it's a marathon not a Sprint because as you can see are available for allocation it's about 10 of this overall cost so there's another way to look at it it's the same total cost number but instead of just giving you one lump sum for campus and say good luck we also break it down by scope of work category um so we have the immediate needs and the 10-year deferred maintenance those first two categories okay right from the facility commission assessments that you're Veritas did you know again analyzing all of the facilities of negative today not rolling in the vision projects not adding gymnasiums where they don't already exist but just to fix it repairs are in the first two line items everything else below that line is visionary projects is to properly Implement TK and kindergarten costumes that are proper for for those programs Etc um and providing equity for middle schoolers for an equity um fields for example be oh I'll run through the list in a minute but the exterior play Space is playing fields of cardboard is category number um captures costs for all middle schools and school supporting grades six through eight to have an artificials for future week so those are things that don't all need to be prioritized today but these this is capturing that overall issue creating that ideal scenario so these costs are based on parent maintenance means and the vision they include what we call a total project costs so they are the tops to construct the building and also ask to design like so hard costs and soft costs for the spoken word identified there are some exclusions things that we can't predict at this point um like utilities to the connections and outside what it needs to be done um if there is a basin of hazardous materials escalation Beyond 2023 at this point we do not visual that can help us figure out escalation but what you're seeing here is dollars and we also don't really win um the need for temporary housing like this so that's why you hold that From perspective attention um so let me just quickly run through the scope of work categories so I went through the first two the facility commission assessments number three is just for classrooms um to modernize them or reconfigure them so modernizing is to replace update definitions inside whereas reconfigured maybe even make some knowledge and reconfiguring in this case typically means kindergarten classrooms TK classrooms or costumes for special education to be your needs uh students because they need or specialized facilities uh category number four classrooms new construction one of the goals was to remove portable classrooms and replace them with new construction buildings so that's where we see that in fact number four I think that's just classrooms everything else includes modernization reconfigure or new depending on how it was applied to the campus so for category number five science Arts electives programs number six Performing Arts there's one site that has a multi-use theater um or districts use and also middle school performing arts programs like music and dance is in category six category seven are you into purpose rooms and food circuits this category includes updating kitchen equipment and service equipment [Music] Etc number nine welcome center and staff support so that Welcome Center is an update of the administration building sure there's a secure front entry there's a local environment and it supports staff number 10 Media Center is Gene support so this is bringing back the libraries permission from the media resource for students and student support encompasses your Learning Centers wellness centers other student support services so the Learning Center being a suite of spaces offices Conference during the flexible spaces that can house your speech therapists your psychologists and other student support specialists number 11 outdoor Commons amphitheaters and quads these are outdoor spaces specifically designed for learning at large gatherings one of the strategies um to help be mindful of this overall cost rather than expanding every NPR everywhere which would sometimes to be very cost prohibitive um we included an amphibuner at that campus a place where large groups can gather it is shaded and connected to the NPR so we can have a double facing stage you can face it towards that Amphitheater and to be able to have fun whatever uh number 12 shelters for dining so we're just being pulling out the shade structures specifically no matter what that shade is being used for just pulled out into itself so the fourth category number 12 13 exterior spaces for play so hard cords uh playgrounds football courts uh number 14 existing Building Systems toilets Improvement free efficiency all the things that local building run effectively to Insight utilities that's from the category number five the things that again Alpha sites function that may not be as visible but very much needed that included where there was a lot of new construction that set utilities category included increasing the electrical capacity so things that need to kind of going into campus and these other components There are 16 safety security so that's where you'll see you're fencing security cameras and things like that number 17 campus arrival parking drop off um pretty self-explanatory but also it was an entry process of that welcoming entry onto campus for visitors parents for 18 Next Generation classrooms that's really really bad Furniture number 19 is technology let's continue the technology refreshold coming back to that thermometer funding slide is the different way to look at it and we have identified um through our funding Analyst at CL Consulting who's also partnered with us on here helped us realize some additional funds that will be available so we've got that 114.9 million available from your current bonds um the immediate needs that student category number one plus 4.5 million I'll back up so that's going to category at the top right there it was agreed from the facility development community that these are bussters and shouldn't be prioritized so we have it here as part of what comes out of that 114.9 um the you are a district eligible for State matching funds the state identifies 57.6 million of State eligibility for or consumed projects on your existing facilities um visiting the district must spend with 57.6 million before the state matches but the state will match um 60 of his eligibility um so once we spend or once we kind of back out the 57.6 million that leaves us from the 114.9 news us with another 52.7 million to prioritize towards any other projects it's really what we're looking at is the immediate needs allocation of 4.5 and in those other two um kind of buckets of funding sources things that remain 110 have changed billion but we've identified you know used the 57.6 matching funds because then with those three categories you'd run out of your existing funding for projects serious on the statement because does it have to be used by certain amount of time now right now like we've done on that for sure you can count on that it takes now I'm not I'm still learning all the ins and ounces myself um once you've applied for that funding that you can just watch out and you are eligible for that that's what you want yeah okay so that's all the part of data now before I am free your priorities your ins on this we'll go over what the but everyone else so I mentioned we met with the schools like raise in that third engagement after the town hall meetings where we followed up kind of works out the solutions of the campuses said okay let's pretend the diagram is updated which 3D projects would make the biggest difference on your campus what would you do to the first second and third and so I'll let you read these to yourselves the name is security not here to identify system exchange items there's the agent security but in so I can say a few things that were identified as um thinking secure or safety items you mentioned the crime support field repair yeah play fields in here was identified either to say concerns um and those are the two that are coming to mind outside of the specifications it was a lot of classes because that is services um they were prioritized by some of these campuses instead of being first remember at the very beginning of the presentation where she was sharing the completed so the first step and for the thought that must do who went ahead and did it because it's our result of the assessment report those were the worst so now we have to go to the next yeah I know yeah the answer is yes [Music] yes whatever um you know there's a lot of places based on the assessment of the disability by the books activities yes you asked me by side all right not just by category but by science which is coming like that you know you're going to fix it okay right so I'm saying yeah the best books according to number one I would say those many of those who are inside each school out of making improves within that school yeah no on the facilities conditions so that's a little different than this one and the board will be receiving that facilities condition report assessment as well so that you can look at each school and make a determination based on the Consultants of data which areas at the greatest um yeah part of this narrative here that will be receiving that thing in the next few days yes thank you um this whole site is committee priorities that we've been looking at has the administration gone through and yeah there's one two three this is just yeah okay so as soon this is a culmination all the stakeholders brings together their desires what they've prioritize we'll be bringing that report as part of the whole overall package and then after that we won't have our internal discussions on how we're going to move forward right so um this is kind of in line with with Dr McDonald was saying the dream that the wish list that we could do everything this is part of that information so it's tonight you're like you're in the stakeholder and you're getting yeah right now we're giving you all of the data points you are the decision here right so now giving you all the data points this is what everyone said I'm going to guess seeing all the the gymnasiums and media center and NPR expansion that checking all the boxes off of everyone's top three dream wish lists but it's not going to fit in your budget right so that's where you know you can see the data points we have um my point about the administration they're having privacy to help us [Music] so another data point here is a community survey response there was one question on the community survey that asked and gave it a list of options and said which of the following design elements are most important I have a future in school at least this is how they all right societal classrooms technology and flexibility of the learning spaces for the top three people can see there what else were the most responses you take each of the spoken priorities you know everything and start to translate them to the scope of work categories so that each of the spoken priorities and results from the survey aligns and Falls within that cost specimen somewhere it's covered in the cost of learning that cost estimate um covered by one of the civil liberty categories so this is the size of classrooms um we in terms of that as being okay that's so category three or four kind of depending on the School site and the implementation of the people you can figure spaces or new technologies so category 19 technology structure and flexibility of learning spaces we would file one under uh category 18 from Westport furniture so taking all of those vitamins by the suicide many priorities come up with this lovely Matrix get closer further guys um and place to dot where the School site I already aligns with that scope according category so School sites across the top categories across the left um a two in the Red Dot means that two of their three top priorities happen to fall within the same specific word category everyone just did a straight edition of the dots across the lines we see that with the school side committee priorities were taken that was back in May or April Archer April I should say so we actually have about four of the we've got 11 dots in the row for exterior play spaces 11.

a.gov log on to the website you will see stakeholder survey for master facility plan please take that survey the information you provide there will give us Insight not necessarily of design criteria yet uh we'll get to there in the next step which is the open house but it will give us some good information on what is important for us to consider as we move forward these questions were taken from other Master facility planning processes so that way we can mirror that process that we've seen at other schools um go ahead is that something you could share with um like one of our stakeholders like acdhh to put in their e newsletter to go absolutely awesome absolutely and um letia I'm sure we could get together and develop a list of other stakeholders and be able to put that together so I'll work with letis on that one and we'll make sure that we send out an email of let's get as much information as we can uh it's designed to be able to work towards uh you to left a category if you're a student a parent a teacher and other and so that way we can go ahead and tailor those questions because questions for a student are very different for what they want out of their campus than say a teacher um so those are tailored to each one of those demographics to ensure that we captured that information um openhouse and initial review of the plans so between now and November December more than likely December we will be working with the architectural and engineering firm they will come up with essentially floor plans of each one of these buildings now they're going off the information that we've given them on demographic information intended purpose it is a rough draft and we will be hosting those the internal idea is is a massive cardboard display of the the building as well as a Braille version of it sitting right next to it you'll be able to go through the galley way at your own pace so that way it's not for forc and then at the end of that galy way you'll have the opportunity to be able to sit in front of a camera and be able to sign if that's your primary language or if you would like to speak uh if you feel that passionate as well as take just a regular written survey if that's what you feel is best for you so we have that accommodation for all of our our stakeholders we'll be able to walk through the Phoenix campus be able to walk through Tucson campus provide that feedback that will be captured given back to the architectural engineering firm doesn't mean that every opinion will be worked into it but it definitely will allow us to gather that information collect it and document it uh and then they'll be able to revise that information over the months of January through May um we do currently have right now the appraisal of surplus land but we're having that appraisal evaluated by our brokerage firm the appraised value of the land does not mean that's what it could actually sell for that's just what it's worth as class or as a comparison to the sale of other schools but as we know it may not be sold for the intended purpose of being a school so jll who is the state brokerage firm is evaluating that information and we hope to have that back in October so that way we know the actual value of what we think we could get for that land if the intended purpose was to sell uh I would like to note you won't be able to sell that land until after the construction of all those other buildings or Renovations are completed so we need upfront money which is what we're currently working on with decision packages that have moved forward we've also worked with the capital Improvement plan process as well as I think we're also running a bill in order to support this so there's a lot of work that we're trying to do in order to get this funding um all of this also was presented to jlbc and OPB in the capital Improvement plan and they notated the amount of work and effort that we've put towards this and are advocating for it um once that is done uh the master facility facility plan or sorry number four board discussion and action item of approval revise building layouts November through January hopefully January you know we'll be able to get together have those final layout plans you'll be able to see those I can come to you answer any questions you have about those plans and then once that is solidified then we can start building the final document with the rest of the information uh there's a lot of other aspects that we' already notated like way point finding that would be in that document um and then we'll work on that through December through May a finalized plan hopefully June 30th and then uh per board policy and implementation every year so you can hold me accountable of where are you at Albert what have you done and what are you doing next so with that um board president kif I know I speak really fast so any questions and I will try to slow down I I do have questions so so what I'm hearing is um we will have to make a decision on moving forward with the building um layout and Renovations hopefully by um October with monies based on the current budget submission okay um and then the idea of possibly selling off land would not happen until after the new building renovation and all of that is completed correct am I understanding that correctly potentially potentially okay so if that were to occur we would make sure that we would have something similar to these open houses that you're doing with the the revisions um to make sure that there was some kind of stakeholder involvement and feedback before anything would be decided uh we can accomplish that in two ways one way is that we could set up a separate town hall or I can make that a focus of this town hall now and I think that can be discussed within the executive team I don't think that has to be our decision but I do think it's important that we get some feedback from our stakeholders on that I I don't want that decision to be made um without some input from them my intent was to actually include that in this um this one but it if we wanted to separate it we could but my intent would to be to here's the whole plan tell us what you think tell us what you like and don't like I just want to make sure that we do get feedback on that specifically I don't want them to feel that we are doing this without having their input in this correct and the the reason I say depends about whether or not you'd have to make a decision on selling uh or potentially selling off a portion of the campus or not is that uh if the um legislature came back and said yes we will give you X number of dollars to facilitate this plan but only if this is part of the deal kind of it could force that decision a little quicker okay and that's something that um is outside of my control sure um I would like to see those as two board decisions then come to us as two requests absolutely that was all of my questions does anybody else have questions yeah I do um thank you Albert uh looking at the uh the map for Tucson it looks like the parcel for sale is tell me if this is I'm interpreting is correctly 12.6 Acres correct and what is the total acreage of the Tucson campus the total acreage of the Tucson campus that we own is 64 Aces ACR now what you see here in this map is not everything we own on this property there is roughly another six to seven acres up to the northwest of our campus that we use right here as our overflow lot for the burger Performing Art Center for individuals to park and then we lease out the remaining land that runs along the Santa Cruz River and goes to the northeast of us is actually least to the city of tucon and is currently a park oh okay where the FR frisbee uh courses correct and that one is I believe it's a 20 or 25 year lease that we have for a dollar and the agreement is is that they have a park maintain it take care of everything for us and then we um uh we don't have to worry about maintaining that section of that property uh so that lease uh was just renewed I think about 2 to 3 years ago so it takes some time to be able to cancel that lease if that was something that was desired um but uh overall we sit right on about 30 35 acres worth of land where our primary function is so sorry if this seems even redundant because you've mentioned this um 30 what 20,000 Square fet reduced to 180 MH it's about a 40% reduction 12 acres for sale where where is the rest of that reduction where're I mean it looks like the the infrastructure remains somewhat the same so I mean how where do where is that additional uh consolidation coming from well the the buildings that sit on that 12.6 Acres I know it's a little yellowed out but that is that consolidation there so what we would be consolidating in that area would be um let me see if I have that full list in front of me um um we have the Clifford building which is currently the preschool and and uh birth to five Center we have the Clifford uh oh sorry the high school building that is 21,000 Square ft that would be part of that sale we have uh the old vocational building the vocational Annex Building we would have the current middle well it's the current High School building that we're using it as but it's by definition the Middle School building would also be part of that sale uh Maricopa man Anita pal vocational Annex uh as well as trying to remember I can't see very clearly through this map oh the uh living apartments would be part of that that these are all buildings that are within that 12 12 acres correct okay um thank you uh very different question but I think worth asking is in this last uh legislative season there was a lot of contention and question about the possibility of asdv coming a multi uh disciplinary or disabled type of agency uh I know that may arise again probably with a uh with further detail and further thought out approach with all this architecture and planning going on with that possibly in the uh in the wings has that discussion come into to all the renovation and you know all the planning that I mean this is a lot of work you guys have already done I mean tons and tons of work and I commend you on that I mean hours and hours you know hard hard decision hard thinking to make these uh make all these pieces fit however with Senator wad sack's plan and if that's going to come back on the table uh this campus would be very different with with uh different uh student body and constituency so I'm just wondering how I you know the proverbial cart before the horse and uh and is that something that has come into discussion because that it seemingly is something that would really change business as we know it I think it absolutely would change business as we know it um and I don't know if I'm the right person to maybe comment on whether or not that's the best interest for ASB but I would like to know um regardless of any possible change whether it's today or 25 years from now if you look at the map just north of the athletic complex there is a red dotted line that says future expansion area that also could be extended to that entire field area so if the legislative body decided it would be the best interest to have asdb serve different types of students or for another purpose could be anything there is room for growth and opportunity there there's also room in growth for ASB if we offer different different programmatic options to be able to build and construct on that at a future point I truly believe that we would be able to consolidate into this space and be able to flex as needed whatever the legislative body decided for us Albert just kind of a followup to Mike technical if we were to sell off this parcel of land with the buildings technically that could be bought by somebody to utilize as a school correct um and we've already seen other sales of schools uh specifically to Charter Schools and private schools uh mostly in the Maricopa region thank you any other questions for Albert I have a bunch of questions no not right now no it's it's uh this is good work uh it's a little unusual to to go through this much design without determining what you're going to do with that extra land beforehand particularly just for the sake of of uh raising Capital but um but then again as a agency school/ institution it's uh I see that we do have different uh flexibility so thank you though this is this is really interesting and good thank you sir yeah I don't think I have a specific question but as far as like kind of pigy backing off Mike Gordon's comment I feel like part of what happened with the legislature too with that whole becoming a school with multiple disabilities or accepting multiple disabilities above and beyond what we have was partially when they looked at a lot of our financials we are spending a lot per student here on the Tucson campus and correct me if I'm wrong Albert a lot of what we're spinning per student or maybe this goes over to Sheena um is because of what we're sinking into currently a lot of our um facilities it's a portion I mean to give an example the water bill on this campus is $134,000 a year the electricity bill runs just about $500,000 a year so when you start to take the size of the campus and do that but with regards to the cost per student that's a very complicated aspect that obviously oversimplified yes yeah so so and and um if I may be so bold to say that um the financial decision for these students it can't just be financially based it has to be what's in the best interest of these students absolutely and we we as conversely we as stewards of taxpayer money also have to Steward that with responsibility and respect and it can be done both absolutely and so one way of doing that is to consolidate the campus into a much more reasonable size whether the sale the land is there or not it doesn't really not that it doesn't matter that's probably a poor choice of words but it's not a determining factor to the plan of consolidating the campus as a whole into this smaller space so we are more respectful of taxpayer dollars uh excuse me Britney uh this is Shaina I do want to add that it's not just a facilities but when they're comparing us to other traditional schools we have specialized Educational Services that we provide so that is not a good comparison so it as Albert mentioned is a complicated Factor when we're looking at the cost per student but our cost per student here on the Tucson campus is significantly different than our cost per student on our Phoenix campus correct yes and a lot of that is because of some of the differences for example when it comes to facilities we also have the uh the dorms the residential the dorms um program um when when looking at that as well so there are some other costs um the pbsd campus does not have that the Tucson campus does yes I didn't mean to imply that all of it is obviously our facilities but I do know that that does play when we look at yes what we're doing here what decisions that are coming down you know that we have to decide as a board um for our families that we serve our students that we serve our community that we serve here um and after coming through that spring with the legislature and everything that happened there obviously us as the board I'm I'm sure I speak for everybody we want to make the best decision we can for our community um and I'm sure honestly we would like to skirt around some of those issues that we did encounter with the legislature um as well as obviously giving our students out here a much more efficient campus um and serve our community and like you said the tax pairs with that so and and if I may add one other aspect as as uh superintendent assistant superintendent Cooper mentioned is um with that cost is also we have the vi component here that's a very different educational aspect than say just the def campus and those components there but also I would like to note um one of the reasons that this plan is also so imperative uh as we move forward and we move uh what may feel like quite quickly um is that it is part of the auditor General's findings we do need to have a robust plan for our Capital needs a way to fund it and a way to implement it and so this as we work towards that legislature of different intents um and different desires from the legislature um in four years if we do not show that we have met this and that we're making substantial progress towards it uh that is my primary concern as I look at this is how do we ensure that we have a space that is functioning well for our students for the future so they have a place that's meeting their needs I cannot tell you how many times I hear stories of a student in a general ed school getting left in the corner and how horrible that is whereas here they don't and um I'm proud to say that with some of the work from media we had our Capital Improvement plan meeting with the state uh osbb and jlbc we had a wonderful preview video from the seniors and I presented that video of why asdb is special and I had everyone in the room going you're really trying to pull out our heartstrings aren't you and I said oh absolutely I have every intent to pull out your heartstrings I got a phone call about two weeks later from a project manager who said apparently you made people cry and now you have millions of dollars coming your way and so we may not have all of our Capital funding guaranteed yet but we have been told that we're getting approximately a couple million dollars in additional building renewal funds now we'll see what actually comes through because that gets worked out over the next couple months but that includes a lot of work for hvac's carpet as well as what we're going to see in electrical components as we know is already a problem um we have a switch gear system that's on the elementary school building that if it fails it is 18 months before we have a new one and there is no building and no power so we have potentially have few million dollars to help deal with that situation as well as well as doing lighting upgrades for the spa so it is being invested into um there are people that do see the benefit of ASB I think there are more that see the benefit than those that don't uh and they are advocating very hard to get us the funding needed uh in order to support our students so I think this plan and our our approach is working uh and I think that as we move forward we'll be able to show that ASB is willing to do even hard things itself and as potentially selling parts of its own land to be able to do that um and so I think as we move forward with that it it shows that we're all in this together to make a good place so with that I I'll get off my my soap box but I think you hit on a very good point I think that was part of it with the legislature we have to do a better job of showing them why this school is different and why you know they're trying to compare apples to oranges and why why it is different why it is important and why these students need to be taught as apples and not oranges correct and I saw board membo yes hello thank you so much good uh good information first of all I would like to say that the work you have done is beautiful I do have a question I'd like to ask as well what would you say is the most challenging part of doing this project just out of curiosity from your standpoint what has been most challenging um and you're right about one thing that asdb is a very unique environment and it has a very rich history um for my understanding this land was a gift and I think that we should make better use of it so I I think the one thing that this is going to be be kind of a double-edged sword here the one thing that has been the most difficult is one of the things that has been the the best advocation for this process and that is the passion of asdb everyone here is passionate about this place I I don't think anyone sits up here and and does what we do here because we're just here for a paycheck I think everyone's very passionate with passion obviously comes some some heated ideas um and so we have to work col collect ly to realize that we're all on that same team that the goal is is that we're all here for those students and and that passion is something that I is like I said is not really the challenge to get over I'm glad we have that passion because without it we wouldn't have people advocating and champing the way that they are um but that also means that it takes extra time to go through all of those details and work with everyone in order to get that understanding um some of this was initially coming through with regards to you know potentially selling off to campus and we had leaders in our our team that were very upset um because you know I've been here 30 years how could you do this how could you make this recommendation um and I do it for the same reason that they're filling that passion I want it to be here for another 30 thank you appreciate you other comments or questions for albertt Leticia did we have any public comments for agendized items okay then we will move on to 1.04 information item superintendent report good afternoon president Nel members of the asdb board of directors assistant superintendent ketov assistant superintendent Cooper and the ascb community Welcome to our board meeting this afternoon I really appreciate the recent discussion that you all just had with Albert Duff it is quite an important discussion that we are currently having I wrote um a presentation talking about collaboration but I think I'm going to throw that most of it out the window this afternoon because of the recent discussion that I just heard you all have I will emphasize collaboration I will focus on that in my report but I do want to let you know that this this summer and fall for as DB has been the most collaborative time that I have seen since I've been superintendent I started in 2016 as superintendent and we have done a lot since then you might remember some of the work that we've done you might also remember some of the challenges we've encountered especially the co 19 pandemic um the closing of schools and then last year returning to uh quote unquote normal back to normal learning for our students and getting their lives back on track after they were so disrupted with the pandemic students didn't know how to behave in the classroom in the hallways because of the disruption they experienced over the two years so this past school year we faced many challenges for both of our campuses trying to figure out how we could provide support to our students for their social and emotional learning and growth and we also had some challenges and realized that we need to make changes to our leadership team last spring and summer we made those changes we added new leaders and we are moving forward and we are already seeing the impact of their leadership skills and the changes that are happening and the collaboration that's been going on throughout the agency Albert and his work with the master facilities plan really is a collaborative effort he is not doing that in a silo he is working with the AR Architecture Firm he's working with us the administrative team he just designed a survey to send out agency wide to collect feedback and we will have openhouse Town Halls at both Tucson and Phoenix to involve our stakeholders so I've had conversations and I will also be reaching out to you board members to let you know what is happening because we have important decisions coming towards us in the future that will impact the agency for many years to come we were just talking about the state legislature and I just want to say that Maria Murphy our director of policies and government relations for the last seven or eight years has been going to the state legislature every session she is there she is networking she's meeting with the Senators and the representatives she's talking with them about the unique situation that asdb is she's inviting them to come on campus to meet our students one of our she's one of our earliest advocates representative laer oh one of our earliest Advocates was representative Boer now he is Senator Boer and he became our advocate he came to pdsd campus he met with our students he himself is an educator and what he saw on our campus we had the opportunity to sit with him and talk and he saw how unique we are and how unique our students are and he became one of our biggest Champions and Maria Murphy was the reason that that happened because of her networking with the state legislature and then the last um session we did get a 4year renewal because of the connections that she has developed with the state legislatures who are willing to Advocate and go to bat for us without them we would have been stuck with a one or twoyear renewal so the collaboration that has been happening we are going to continue to work on we're going to continue it will not stop we are all about um strategizing for the next executive session and she is in Phoenix right now networking meeting and talking with people and getting ready for the next session so collaboration is happening and we are making the effort to look at the future to plan and to figure out how to make the best use of our resources we have amazing people here you just heard from Albert and I wish you could hear from all of our staff who are working with us because we have amazing new leaders coming into the agency taking on responsibility people like Michael [Music] Olivier who is our new director of the OD replacing assistant superintendent katov Mike is already working and networking with directors principes and figuring out professional development opportunities for teachers and staff and providing those opportunities to them we have the new C director Scott Madson and he is working on how to get both campuses to expand and develop better CTE programming for our students so we have a new uh special education director as well Sarah SOI and she has taken on the special education part of asdb and one of her first challenges is right here on the Tucson campus with our Student Health Center this summer some of our nurses resigned looking at other opportunities some were on leave and that meant at the beginning of the school year we had no nurses on staff and Sarah had a Mad Dash trying to figure out how we could get nurses and CNAs to cover our Student Health Center and that meant she had to collaborate with the Tucson campus staff she had to work with business services with HR and with a Contracting agency um the name of that I believe is Acro that agency she had to convince them to provide nurses for the Tucson campus and was successful she did that with the collaboration from all these departments and individuals so these are some of the leaders we bring are bringing into the agency internally we are also growing leaders as well as bringing external leaders in so this past summer and fall as I look out I am seeing that we are moving forward we are making progress and we are finally meeting our students needs for their social and emotional learning we are supporting them and we are implementing PBIS on both of our campuses and making it clear to our teachers and staff that they need to take that training they need to apply these strategies in the classroom we have clear expectations for the students in terms of their behavior and we are moving forward so there is a lot of really positive collaboration activity happening and I think I'm going to mention one more thing and then I will stop because I could keep going on I do apologize for those whose eyes are glazing over but I did mention uh this summer in July Dr Jennifer Scarboro hosted a 3-day interpreter Summit and I went the f first morning and there were 80 interpreters in the room from all over the State of Arizona and it was the first time that they had gathered in one room in 17 years so that was about 10 years before my time and the energy and excitement in that room was palpable the practice they provided for those interpreters for our educational interpreters about their roles and responsibil abilities about the cultural and linguistic needs that they needed to provide for their students and the students out in the public schools those that three-day Summit we could tell the interpreters we're so excited and also exhausted after that but they are going to host a summit again next year they've already been getting requests for that and we have other groups who are planning Summits as well so we really are uh we did start this school year in a way that we have not been able to do for a long time there are a lot of really good things happening here the last two board meetings I talked with you all about accountability I talked about how you know we are doing what we are supposed to be doing and now I'm talking about collaboration we working on act our operating principles and I really do believe that so this collaboration does depend on trust and relationships without trust and relationships we cannot collaborate and we are collaborating and I wish I could keep on with my list of more examples um but if you do want more I'm happy to provide that uh I'm sure the two assistant superintendant will also give more examples in their reports as well thank you thank you and I do have a couple of just a followup um I want to say thank you because I do appreciate the board updates that you provide for us um that has been very helpful um and I I just want to say keep them coming cuz that's been I think really good information for us and and I feel um that kind of keeps us connected between our meetings and our work studies and I really have liked um the videos that we receive when new staff are hired that kind of introduces us to staff um that's been a great way to at least have a name and a face and a little bit of background of who they've been who they are and where they're coming from that's I've really enjoyed that and this is kind of to Albert and you but when the open houses um happen I'd really like to make sure that the board is invited to those so that we can see those um plans as well I think that would be really great and that was all I wanted to just add does anybody else have questions or comments for Anette okay moving on to 1.05 um assister assistant superintendent um catch up all right excuse me good afternoon uh board president kifil members of the board superintendent rikman assistant superintendent Cooper and the asdb community for my report first I would like to thank Dr Kendra Benedict and our ELP team and teachers for putting together a phenomenal conference in Flag Staff superintendent rikman and I joined them on August 17th as the ELP was working on a mission statement it was amazing to see how many veteran asdb staff have settled in with newer staff within the the ELP and I want to commend Kendra and her leaders in creating a wonderful culture and Community within the ELP which is easier said than done cu the majority of that staff is spread out across the State of Arizona also the ELP does have now has an assistant director Michelle Ahern who's a veteran here at asdb so welcome to the team Michelle uh as promised as an addendum to the board report uh you do have our 90-day plans this is something we're going to continue to focus on and we'll continue to make these transparent as they're updated these won't be used for anything punitive but it is a way to keep everybody focused as we move through the year at this point the school year is about one8 of the way completed which is scary uh but it it proves why we need these 90day plans time is moving no matter if we want to be proactive or if we want to be reactive we need to remember that every year matters to our students our families and our staff so we need to have a plan and make sure we're doing what we're planned on doing as mentioned we are about 1/8 way through the school year uh both campuses and our itin programs do continue to have Staffing shortages I want to publicly thank the principes and directors as well as their teachers and staff for being creative and working together uh to make sure that we continue to provide a quality education to our students while we deal with these Staffing shortages superintendent rikan mentioned PBIS it was really fun at the beginning of the school year to walk around pdsd and see all the teachers practicing PBIS and routines be it if it was in the high school the middle school I ran across campus in record-breaking heat because I wanted to see is it also happening in the elementary school and it was um again easier when you look at it it it looks easy but the the amount of work that their team did and putting together the lesson plans and making sure that everybody was doing it out of the gate was impressive we start the PBIS Grant on on Monday with the Tucson campus uh and that's a three-year Grant pdsd is currently in year two of that Grant on August 16th we had our first curriculum and instructional uh our first curric curriculum and instruction leadership meeting so that included the principls the regional directors our sped director the CTE director director of De program director of blind programs and the OD director uh superintendent rikman mentioned that we have a great team and we do I think I did the least talking and presenting at that meeting it was wonderful to see just naturally how everybody started collaborating and coming up with ideas to make the agency better uh there's a gentleman named Edward demings who's kind of known as the master of continual Improvement of quality and one of his quotes is the greatest waste in America is the failure to use the abilities of people I'm really just trying to figure out in the year that I'm in this position how to continue to put these people in the best position to shine uh they are the ones that will continue to move asdb in the right direction in conclusion I do want to acknowledge the hard work of our interpreters both public and instructional I rely on them every day to help me do my job and many families and public school teachers rely on our interpreters to make education accessible uh for that I want to acknowledge them and say thank you you all have a copy of my report if there's any questions any questions for okay moving on to 1.06 um assistant superintendent of agency operations and support services um assistant superintendent Cooper good afternoon board president kifil superintendent rikan acting assistant superintendent katof members of the board asdb community and staff members these last few weeks have been an exciting time of the year for the operations and support services team as we all welcome the students staff and their families back to our schools the team have been working diligently to support the instructional staff so that all students have what they need to be successful Learners this new school year the information technology team has been busy setting up equipment and electronic devices working on cleaning up our Network reports and completing the copper cabling project the media team has been working on various agency-wide products such as updating our agency websites recording and posting the superintendent blog creating a new agency brochure and planning for the upcoming town halls and open houses we still have many vacant positions open so our human resources team continues to work on addressing the ongoing recru Recruitment and Retention challenges as ASB competes with other agencies and school districts for teachers and support staff it's essential we offer a great compensation package uh the HR team has already begun phase three of the compensation restructure project to address salary competitiveness compression and pay Equity our time frame as you've heard has been bumped up so that we can ensure any salary increase recommendations and or salary schedule adjustments are brought to the board in January before the staff are issued contracts and leave on summer break and that any pay increases be reflected on their following year employment contracts you also just heard about the ongoing work our director of operations is doing with the development of the master facilities plan to improve the safety and efficiency of our buildings across the two campuses and although we're Limited in Staffing the transportation team continues to work on ensuring the safe and efficient daily transportation of our students the budget team completed and submitted the agency's 2025 budget submission package to the state's office of strategic planning and budgeting this past week uh the proposed budget of 66.3 million reflects our ongoing commitment to support a strong and diversified educational program for our students at the same time maintaining our fiscal responsibilities to the community um as part of the agency's long-term strategic plan we continue to work on the overarching goals of um ensuring we have a strong curriculum instruction and assessment practices and effective and efficient operations um included within the budget sub submission package were four funding issue requests totaling $24.8 million the first one included ongoing Transportation support to help pay for contracted costs we continue to incur resulting from our laa status we also asked to use the available cash balance of about $561,000 in our telecommunications fund um which was the leftover funding we received in 2019 to expand our ELP birth to three program and our third funding issue was tied to the preschool contract we have with the foundation for blind children as you've heard on numerous occasions our daily rate for the institutional vouchers forh our visually impaired students is less than the daily contracted rate that we have with FBC the fourth funding issue was to seek funds for the implementation of the master facility plan as you've heard from Albert not only did we ask for these four funding issues based on the projected fiscal needs for 2025 we all also asked for supplemental funding for this current year for ongoing Transportation costs since the funding we received last year was one time we hope to be able to receive most if not all the funding that we've requested and and as we heard um Albert mention we're exploring different Alternatives whether that be through running a bill through the um decision packages and other mechanisms and also with the help and support of our um our new Grant developer looking at other alternative funding as well through grants um whether that be federal state or private as well as donations as you can see through the report um we've we are committed to taking a holistic and strategic approach to ensure that the ever evolving needs of our students whether that be academically socially physically mentally and emotionally um with that being said we've had a number of ongoing changes to to our environments and our work processes um and not everybody has been receptive to the change and I know it's difficult to accept and embrace um for example through the centralized services that we've done within the team and in full transparency I know we as leaders are sometimes struggling to find creative ways to involve staff in the changes that we make having them better understand why they change and then what the change is is that we're looking to happen um so as that continues to be a work in progress and as we build the trust and improve our effective lines of communication and transparency I do want to say I'm grateful and appreciative of the continued support my team does to ensure that we have collaboration amongst all agency um staff resources they are the ones and the drivers to ensure we reinforce the need for the change and and um making sure that we have effective management of our resources um so that really wraps up my report today and I'm open to any questions that any have I do have a question um in regards to um some of these open positions and and I'm just kind of throwing this out there this is sort of a spitball um have we looked at whether or not some of these positions would fall under some of the categories that students are um looking at for CTE certification that these could possibly become an internship or a student employment position I believe so I'm looking at our um Executive Director of Human Resources and she's nodding her head um as she walks up good afternoon Anita the payatt here yes we are um currently working on some things for example we've hired uh former uh ASB students into roles um for teaching that have so we're working on that as well um we also working on looking at our instructional assistant program to bring people on that may not have the the parpro or the uh AA degree um in preparing them to take that so giving them the work experience and then letting them have the opportunity to take the parpro to be certified as an instructional assistant I'm even thinking of some of the um kids that are are are going to some of the CTE programs um either here Tucson or up on the PD SD campus um where they're going for a certificate program that they can then start work once they have that certificate that maybe they could work you know 10 hours a week as a student employee or something like that while they are doing their CTE program even just a thought are you referring to students that work in um I know we've had some that work in human resources and it and business services as well as other programs um within the agency I'm just thinking even I'm trying to think of what some of the CTE programs currently are at like westm and some of those places that um they could possibly some of them are in Food Services some of them are in um I can't pull them out right now excuse me president can I fly do want to mention that um acting assistant superintendent catch off just mentioned maybe we might want to have um our new CTE director speak a little bit more about that and some opportunities um that he may have um to help support the vacancies that we have have within the agency not to put you on the spot even in some of the it things I would think some of the tech kinds of things can you see me okay okay hello everyone um thank you for having me my name is Scott Madson and I am the new CTE director yes that is one of my longterm aims to set up a program in which students can get training on campus in collaboration with um potentially partner high schools as well give them opportunities to um work when they graduate a lot of our students don't know what to do after they they um graduate we do have many departments on campus that are screaming for additional help um maintenance is always a need Transportation there's always a need so we are working currently to identify and develop those programs so that the moment those students graduate they already have a job we can um recruit students and parents feel really good about sending their students here because they will have built-in opportunities with us so yes thank you thank you that's all I have thank you thank you okay we are on 2.01 approval of the consent agenda for items 3.01 3.02 4.02 5.01 6.01 6.02 7.03 and 7.04 I think it's safe to say that we all need more [Laughter] coffee yes I will entertain a motion I make a motion that we approve items 3.01 3.02 4.02 5.01 6.01 6.02 7.03 and 7.04 seconded all those in favor say I I I any opposed seeing and hearing none motion carries I'm going to say since we are so close to the 90 minute Mark that we go ahead and break now before um the review of the business services and let's take a 10-minute break and come back at 5:35 we did that for you guys e there's aot exactly okay like I'm concerned about that oh yeah m media will be ready to start pretty soon yep I have 534 so [Music] so Reuben pleas please hold we're having a lighting issue for anette's interpreter so give us a minute please okay in sorry if it dies it dies for me it's thank you for the reminder guys I appreciate that about what How will I know when you guys are ready okay C we're waiting for a ring light so we are still holding for light yep we're waiting for a ring light okay couldn't we take that one you're right sorry I was trying to be efficient okay what do we need a ring light for one of the interpreters oh they could have this bright one that's shining straight in next I would be really okay like the I I get that but it feels like it's like we can take that off sorry we don't have the light that we thought we did so the we have like a lamp we can put in front of her I can also dim the light that's on your face too I don't know if you're getting some glare on that inter back T Dy okay okay all right we are back um we not live yet oh we're not live yet you tell me when we're live okay um Sean are we ready okay let's start now okay we're back now um moving on to item 3.03 action item approval of 301 performance-based plan for um 2023 2024 um assistant superintendent um catch off no it doesn't it doesn't have a it doesn't have a little star by it all right uh good afternoon board president kifil members of of the board superintendent rikman assistant superintendent Cooper uh the information has been provided on that item if you have any questions does this need a vote yeah it does need okay so I would entertain um a motion on this I just have a really quick question so just as I I read this teachers voted this is what they want we Institute this as a board it's pretty cut and dry uh correct and it's following the procedures and the law on the policies that we've done every single year um the only if there's a big change it's that we have one list for people to choose from where in the past we had a list for itinerate we had a list for um our classroom teachers we've been able to consolidate that uh just to make it easier on everybody the teachers did vote um so it the last step is a board approval so it's standard now across both the co-ops and the campus space correct okay fantas okay uh I can make a motion that we will adopt a performance Spas compensation system to allocate funding from the classroom site fund I second I have a motion in a second all those in favor say I I I any opposed hearing and seeing none this motion is approved moving on to 4.01 information item Finance report Kim bitr director good afternoon board president kifo superintendent rikman assistant superintendent Cooper and tchop members of the board and ASD Comm Community you have been provided three programs decreased by 16 as of July 1st we had 465 FTE which includes 8.5 FTE at FBC at that time we employed 672 staff only 136 are full-time with a 1.0 FTE there are currently 219 vacancies across the agency vacant positions are posted until filled in additionally many staff start at the beginning of the school year the highlight of the June 2023 financial report rep shows the revenue of 62.9 million was 3.6 million higher than the June 2022 revenue of 59.3 million the major difference is the increase in general funds of 3.9 million for the capital Improvement salary increases and the one-time funding for transportation the budget fiscal year 2023 obligated expenditures of 64 million were 7 million higher than budget fiscal year 2022 obligated expenditures of 57 million the increases are in salaries of 4 million professional and outside Services of 642 th000 and other operating expenses of 2 million mostly from the ISA with the ad do Arizona Department of Transportation for the agency Fleet Maintenance and Fuel and transfers out for Capital Improvement of 438,000 our agency cash balance is 3.4 million higher than it was at this time last year the main increases are in the classroom site fund of 1.8 million and the Cooperative Services fund of 2 million offset offset by a reduction in the non-federal grants fund of 264,000 this concludes my report of the agency financial status and I'm open for any questions any questions thank you thank you all right I'm moving on to agenda item 7.01 information and discussion item introduction and possible discussion of policies G cka and gdfa Maria Murphy director of policy and government relations think do we have her on on the phone Maria are you there the phone oh hello yeah there you are thank you uh okay I beg your pardon uh good good evening board president Kel members of the board um it's a pleasure to be with you this evening uh so I all of you have the red lines in front of you they were posted to the website we have not received any questions or comments um but at this time I would like to make myself available for any questions from you just are there any questions for Maria on these okay no questions on these Maria moving on to 7.02 um urgent approval of revised policy BCB yes um so you all have the red line in front of you and I would like to request respectfully that this be approved in one urgent reading rather than in two reads and based on our um part of our what we learned in our discussion um during the work study this um this reflects those changes yes this does reflect those changes board member Kel it ensures that we have the uh correct statutory citation okay and then the only other question um I had in regard to this hold on um under the employment limitation it says no relative as defined in section 39-52 of an asdb board member may be employed by asdb except by consent of the asdb board so just to make sure I'm understanding this clearly um if the governor appoints someone who has a relative that is a staff member they would then also need approval consent approval by the asdb current sitting board so the prospective board member would report that okay uh sign the conflict of interest form okay so it's essentially just making the ACB board aware okay and saying yes we're okay with it okay so it wouldn't require a vote they would just need to we would just need to say okay we're aware of that and that's okay I I I don't interpret it as needing a vote okay thank you that's all I need that was all the questions I have um does anyone else have have questions for Maria regarding this if not I would entertain a motion uh I'll make a motion to adopt uh BCB Asis I have a motion do I have a second I'll second I have a motion a second all those in favor please say I I I hi hi any opposed seeing and hearing none the motion carries thank you Maria thank you thank you moving on to agenda item 7.05 information item um budsman report uh Donna Williams okay Donna Williams here ASD BM buts person board president Nal board member superintendent rikman and assistant superintendent scooper and checkov and the asdb community I am honored to be here to present my second now semiannual um buds person report um I submitted two documents for your consideration one of those items is the um focus group executive summary and recommendations I'm not going to be presenting from that document I will summarize the highlights um in my utsman report so um if we could run the slides if if possible otherwise I'll just present from the slides that I have in front of me so um basically I've been engaged in the same activities um that I started with back in July of 2022 um and that's been r ranging from information providing information to staff and those that reach out to me um to facilitating focus groups which I'll talk a little bit more about later to conducting mediations um I've included the Continuum of available Services um diagram in my presentation because I can comfortably say that I have engaged in Services across the continuum so that would be from the information which is kind of the least involved of what I do all the way to mediation which is probably the most involvement that I have with um ASB staff um and others so just to give you a sense of the aggregate data from my last reporting point which would have been now from January of this year to June um the the users have not really decrease but I think the way that that people contact me has um but you can see from the pie chart that um there were 12 request forms submitted so in the beginning of this process we wanted to create a way for people to reach out to me where it would be easy for me to catalog that usage and so we created a request form it's it's really a Google doc and it populates a spreadsheet so then I can go back and see you know who it was and what they needed um and then report to you what that activity was so 12 people follow the rules and use that document um and you can see in terms of what those individuals needed um it continues to be the majority of Staff um and um and Personnel at asdb um I had some contact by community members and some administrators as well so the reasons um um have remained fairly consistent with um not surprisingly interpersonal conflict being the highest um among the reasons for the um contact followed by um procedural concerns and policy concerns um and other I would say is typically um here's where I am here's where I'm trying to go how do I get there so those three have really tied for kind of the role that I've for the last um 6 months or so and then um followed by formal complaints and um informal complaints so I think as people become familiar with me and my role they also reach out to me in different ways so my phone rang a lot more than it did in the first six months I got a lot more email so direct email and not email from the request form um and um um and those are captured um on page seven of my report so about 30 contacts give or take it's really obviously more difficult to keep track of that because I also get email as Donna Williams not the umut person I have two emails accounts and people were emailing me on both so I had to go back through and figure out okay was this person reaching me or the UDS person so I I I believe it's probably about 30 contacts for the reporting period mostly again related to policy questions and or um interpersonal conflict one of the main activities for this past reporting period that I engaged in was the focus group project um I think I covered in my last report that um a summary of the 2022 employee satisfaction survey really landed on three different buckets and one of those was improved communication and so we really needed to take a deeper dive though into what that really means it's such a broad category um and we really wanted more specific actionable data so that we can start to make some changes in that area so I convened the focus group project to gather that information to be able to share that with the superintendent so that we could be more deliberate um in our approach to solving that problem so over the course of about 3 months I facilitated 11 focus groups encompassing about 80 staff in 12 different employee categories so the project goal was to solicit the feedback to capture those responses report on the results prepare a summary which is what was included in my presentation packet today make some recommendations and then share the report and recommendations with the superintendent so just to give you an idea of some of the results that came from that effort there were four themes that came out of the focus groups the first one was the need to have a comprehensive communication strategy the second thing was more meaningful opportunities to provide feedback there were a lot of decisions made over the course of the last year where staff felt they weren't included and they should have been and they had valuable things to offer um and that came out over and over again um across employee categories the other thing was more information about and greater access to the board I think there is a lot of confusion about what access should look like for this body um and maybe just educating staff um on what's appropriate might help aay some of those concerns and then greater visibility for um um the superintendent not only superintendent rikman but for the assistant superintendent as well so out of that feedback and um superintendent Gman got all the raw data so she got every single state I think it was like 40 something pages of data every single statement that was made in the course of the focus groups the executive summary that I created is six pages because I thought that 40 was a little bit much to be presenting on um but I I attempted to summarize um those 40 pages in the six pages so hopefully you've had a chance to review that so based on the feedback um and the comments that were made during this process one the development of a comprehensive communication strategy seems necessary because communication has varied from very good to not so very good and so in order to have some uniformity across the agency if we are working from a communication plan that everyone has access access to and buys into that will create more uniformity and probably more satisfaction in that area one of the other things was um more meaningful opportunities for staff to um provide feedback as I said and so I think we're working on opportunities for staff to weigh in on major decisions particularly those that impact them in the work that they do every day and then um in terms of a solution about um providing more information about the board board I'm happy to work with um the superintendent um and Maria creating a one pager that basically says here's the board here's how the board was created here's what they can do what they can't do here's how you can interact with them I think there's some confusion about open meeting laws why can't they just show up well there's a reason um and if we just explain why you just can't show up um I think people will have a better understanding of of your role and how it interacts with uh the agent gency and then finally um Vis visibility for our superintendent and assistant superintendent is about being visible so what does that look like um and so it can be uh listing sessions and town halls and just being visible showing up at events agency events graduations Etc so I think we're working on a host of ways for them to be more Vis visible so um one of the probably the most um um I would say informative part of this process happened on August 25th when the steering committee me met talked about the results and really started to lay the groundwork for the communication plan and so um we had a great participation there lots of great ideas really laid the groundwork for what an internal communication strategy should look like for the agency and so that will be one of the things that we move forward with immediately um you know I think it's low hanging fruit something that we can really get a lot of bang right for our buck for by coming up with something um that addresses that concern um and so there's a timeline and a process and that's that's going to be ongoing and so hopefully the next time that I report out I'll have more information on how that's going um and what that roll out looks like so in conclusion um I logged over about 200 hours during this reporting period addressing user requests facilitating the focus groups Etc um you know the the general volume of what I'm seeing seems to be appropriate for one person I'm not overwhelmed um there's plenty of time to get the work done in my view um I would say that based on now I have a full year of requests I can say the most prevalent issue and Trend was interpersonal conflict no surprise there which is often rooted in ineffective communication ation so perhaps once we have our our plan our strategy in place um the interpersonal conflict will also decrease I mean that's that's the idea um the focus groups also supported that Trend um I was hearing over and over again about um interpersonal conflict so developing the inter inter the internal communication plan will help decrease in personal interpersonal conflict we also um my help us explore training opportunities designed to help people individually manage conflict I can't be the only person on the campus doing that work um I think it's valuable training um just as individuals and as Leaders to have and I just created I just U included a link in my report that has some resources where people can do kind of self um Improvement in that area so I wanted to say um before I um answer questions I want wanted to offer kudos to superintendent rikman and her leadership team for being very bold in this moment and for recognizing The Importance of Being intentional um and moving forward with something valuable and something that will be long lasting in the agency um and that will be positive in a sustainable and meaningful way so that concludes my report I'm happy to answer any questions thank you that was a it's a great report very very thorough um thank you the interpersonal conflict um no those would be people that use the request form out of the Dozen that have and so maybe three or four folks are uh did you actually provide mediation um it doesn't always require mediation I did in a few instances but sometimes it's a conversation about how to have the conversation right so I'm hitting a brick wall I have to work with this person give me some strategies that I can use to be a better Communicator um and that falls a little bit short of facilitation and mediation but can be as effective okay and I do recognize communication for some reason is becoming more difficult in even with having more modes to communicate it's it's a so I'm not surprised that you'll find that as one of the primary uh goals that people are seeking so appreciate that and it's not can't be done in a vacuum here right so absolutely any other questions I don't have a question I just have a comment I appreciate your energy for this and you seem like you'd be like a really solid person to be able to if I had a conflict to bring my res my conflicts to so I just appreciate the energy you bring to our agency and um what you do to report off to us and I appreciate your PR part very much thank you thank you I do have a followup sort of um is there any collaboration or back and forth with HR like is there some at does at some point some of this get referred to HR or at at maybe does some at some point do you say you know this might be better served at the utsman level this really is hasn't reached a level that it's an HR complaint yet is there any of that interchange going on yes All of the Above um typically um when people are asking about process um and personal issues some of that will touch and concern HR but once they know the path and if the if the path involves HR then they know to to take that step I've also gotten referrals from HR from people that that where it's not really an HR issue it's something else um go see the UDS person and that's fine too so I think it's both ways and is that mostly within staff or are you getting that even at the community level because I think I I think that's part of some of these issues that we're seeing is that people don't know how to go through this process they don't know where to start sometimes and so sometimes it just becomes this festering I think Anette uses it's the rock that you don't want to turn over because then all the spiders come out right well would say that um my engagement with the community hasn't been what I had anticipated and it might be because their knowledge of my role would come from maybe the website and other things where they're just not engaging in um I did get some um Community contact but it was more about what's happening inside the school and not what's happening outside in the community so um most of my um interactions have been with staff inside the agency thank you thank you all right um moving on to agenda item 8.01 call to the public for non-agenda items um we have one public comment on a non- agendized item and it was submitted through our website um so it was it will be it's posted there or it's in board docs awesome okay moving on to agenda item 8.02 um agenda items for the next regular board meeting um I have a couple I have a couple um previously the board would have time um on the agenda after the board meetings started for some information um items and so I would like to reinstate that and I am hoping that at the next meeting we could have our Assistant Attorney General um do an information session on open meeting law um I think that would be um a great one to start with I think it's something that um should be reviewed I will wait for Annette and maybe at the meeting after that we could have the utsman do a presentation at the regarding her services at the information session um and then a second agenda item I would like to um have the Assistant Attorney General here to um possibly have a discussion and go into executive session regarding the um case that we have been um provided with sorry the case we were provided with yes the case we were provided with um regarding um the Personnel um that has been um with previous superintendent George Martin and I'm not sure if that would be um Michelle or if that would be um Deb probably probably both um and I don't know if Maria is still on the line but I and this is might be something that you could provide information on at the next meeting but have we developed timelines in policy regarding um what we were recommended in the sunset audit as far as timelines when we followed up on something as far as investigations and documentation wasn't that in the sunset audit yes this is Maria Murphy and I am still here and those policies were updated earlier this year okay do what could you just remind me of those timelines so the a basically recommended about 30 business days where possible was what we we're we're struggling to hear you so maybe you could just remind us at the next board meeting okay thank you does anybody else have any other agenda items they would like to add if not you can if not now you can always bring it up to me or unet prior to the meeting okay moving on to agenda item 9.01 action item adjournment this is [Music] Lyn yes Lyn I to this meeting do I have a second I'll second that those in favor say I I I any oppose I this meeting is adjourned at 6:13 p.m.

so as a reminder of some of our visioning and themes from our Think Tank sessions within the community um developing a sense of context and culture we've rallied around a concept of the North End being a farm and field concept and Norton being woods and trails so as we went through our Think Tank sessions this was really a partnership with uh the folks that were part of that uh Representative members of the district the administration and the town as well as some of the students that was the most exciting part of these uh these Think Tank sessions so some precedent imagery uh some Community images that went into our North End inspiration uh to arrive at the farm and field concept whoops and as a part of the think tank process we do this at every meeting that we show this slide I just want to repeat what our Think Tank mission statement was for the North End we're doing this for every child in the future of the Cheshire community so that they can feel connection and sense of belonging to their school community and ultimately be drawn in and love learning similar process for Norton picking up on the woods and trails concept and our Norton Think Tank mission statement we're doing this for everyone who's here and everyone who's coming next so that they can grow as a Learner in a space that is fun and safe for mind and body and ultimately feel like they belong our safe supported and welcome a lot of correlation between the two mission statements it was it was uh it was really great to see that so North End uh schematic design we'll start with the site plan uh we have um as most of you know this is a green field uh we have Jarvis uh to the left of the screen and Marion to to the top uh the site slopes uh from from the top of the page to the bottom so we're really trying to accommodate the topographical changes uh within the space little blow up of the site plan you'll see the North End School in Gray that's the building footprint we have uh parent pick up and drop off I'm realizing that you can't see my cursor as I've been highlighting these things so we'll go to the diagram so the area going from top to bottom area one we've situated the building so that we have this open courtyard it's not enclosed so we have the ability to have access from the outside into the courtyard one of the things in this organization of the building footprint is it allows us to open up the perimeter of the building to allow more natural light to come into the building the areas indicated in number two are our Recreation fields we have two that we're showing on the site as well as some blacktop play our areas indicated in three are our protected play areas the one distinction is the areas in seven are our early childhood protected play areas Aryan 5 is our parent pickup and drop-off Loop our area indicated in six is our main entry the one distinction that I'll I'll say the the item the area on number five to the left that's our parent pickup and drop-off Loop the area five to the right is our bus pick up and drop-off Loop so we're separating and this will be a consistent theme between the two schools we're separating parent pick up and drop off bus pick up and drop off locating the drop-off locations near the proximate entry point to the building so that we can have some some visibility some Access Control some administrative control over students that are being dropped off by parents and by bus the areas indicating eight are how we are towards the bottom of the screen or how we're dealing with storm water this is not going to be a subsurface detention system we're going to use gravity uh within the site uh to handle storm water runoff and we've brought this up in some of our working group meetings this is not going to be a standing water Pond it we have well-draining soil at the site wetlands are further to the bottom of the site so really this is is bio retention and is really there to handle the significant overflow rain events area 9 underneath our Recreation field will be where we locate our geothermal well field that will help support our Heating and Cooling in the building and this is an effort to have this building be no carbon fuels fuel sources for the building area 10 is the concept of locating some nature trails really picking up on some of the benefits of the existing Darcy outdoor play Outdoor Learning areas Area 11 is a parking lot off of Jarvis for our early childhood area and the area to the right uh indicated number six that is our early childhood entry so we're really trying to separate those two functions of the building understanding that the kids that are in our early childhood programs have different pickup and drop-off times oftentimes have parents that are coming at different hours of the day to be able to facilitate that and separate it from the rest of the the administration of the parking and area 12 is where we have our loading and receiving this is off of the bus pickup and drop-off loop it's located uh where we have our kitchen and servery and cafeteria and ultimately where our head end physical plant is within the building yeah so from a floor plan diagram this is the the last time we were here we showed you some concepts of this but really the idea that we're separating some of the public facing or more public areas of the building in a Main Street Corridor uh near the front of the building separating our learning communities from that Main Street so that we can have better compartmentalization of those areas and also facilitate the building to be available for nights and weekends or after school use so you'll see the main level to the left upper level to the right both schools are two stories with the largest building footprint being at grade so the concept there is in our elementary system our Upper Elementary classes or upper elementary learning communities would be located on the second floor with our lower elementary on the main floor level so an overall floor plan we won't quiz you on all the locations at the end of this presentation but you will see the areas we have our early childhood main entry to the left of uh the floor plan are are as we mentioned our main street are our public areas including Media Center Gym cafeteria some of our core specials art music all off of our our public court or Administration and nurses Suite in green located near the main entry with eyes on the prize of the students coming in from drop off location in further diagram form you'll see our main circulation axes within the within the floor plan highlighted in blue we are leveraging the ends of our corridors to facilitate areas for breakout within the learning communities but also visibility uh for views to Nature and outdoor access so really clear a pretty uh circulation scheme with Clarity for the students and and the teachers that are going to be here we as we had mentioned regarding the open courtyard uh the areas in yellow are where we can allow natural light into the building so the goal is for every curriculum space to have an exterior window of uh the availability of natural light and Views to the outside and as I had mentioned the ability to compartmentalize each one of these learning communities so the upper level so I should stipulate that the learning communities more or less are stacked uh so we have our kindergarten and first grade in one Learning Community sorry pre-kindergarten kindergarten and one Learning Community grades one and two in another and as we get up to the second floor grades three and four and five and six and on the upper level of on our main street is we have um an upper level of the media center as well as an upper elementary our room part of the program programmatic component is we have two art rooms um we have visioned this as part of our working group as an early Elementary art uh room on the for the main level Upper Elementary art room on the upper level and we also have our math and reading otpt and some of our uh Services social workers psychologists in a suite on the upper level so similar plan diagram Clarity of circulation views to Nature more or less replicated from the the lower level the one distinction that I will say that on the upper level is we do have a connection point between the Learning Community to the bottom left and the Learning Community to the bottom right so this will more or less be a bridge that connects the two to allow for a more coherent egress path once again natural light and the ability to compartmentalize the learning communities from the rest of the building so some of our exterior renderings This Is A View From the parent uh pickup and drop off you're looking at the media center to the right the main entry uh canopy in the middle of the screen in the gymnasium volume to the left the idea that we're we're looking to Target natural materials stone veneer brick at select areas at pedestrian height or human scale height we will have a combination of metal panels and aluminum framed windows in the other areas here's a further view from the parent Loop zooming out a little bit the volume all the way to the left is our cafeteria volume so one of the things in our conversations with the committee of the ngsbc um is these pitched roofs really kind of connote uh the idea of uh the the vernacular of a Farm building uh and in many of our value management conversations uh the committee's desire to keep those um to really put a signature on the architecture of this building was important here's a view to the main entry once again Media Center volume is to the right gymnasium volume to the left of the main entry you're kind of looking straight on to the administrative area so when we say the visibility and the the the administrative control you can really get a sense of how that um how the Administration has eyes to the to the pickup and drop-off areas this is looking out on the green uh in between the two parking areas the primarily looking at the gym and the main entrance oh okay um what's the pleasure of the board uh would you like me to entertain questions or get through the total presentation first uh we're probably over halfway through the presentation so maybe if we just continue um because perhaps there may be some similar questions on Norton that you may have on the North End so schematic design for Norton here we have uh uh a smaller version of the site plan to the left kind of a blow up version to the right the areas outlined in white uh is the location of the existing Norton school so as you can see from the placement of the the building the concept is Norton is going to remain operational through the academic year that we're building the new building so the the placement on the site will facilitate that that construction process so we're working with Ong the construction manager and the OPM arcadis to develop a logistics plan as part of this um to figure out you know we can't tear down Norton School uh until we have the new building ready so there will be a sequence and an issue as we go through design Development and Construction documentation for for um making sure that we have parking and everything available for the start of school more to come on that certainly as we get through the design so uh similar organization of parent pickup and drop off which is to the left did I say that correctly no bus pick up and drop off is to the left parent pickup and drop off is to the right if I toggle back to the the uh overall site plan uh you'll see a long entry uh from the road up to these parking areas that is intentional to provide as much of a cue to get as many cars and buses off of the street we understand that there historically there's been many parents that will park over in the church parking lot and allow the students to walk across the street our goal by the time this is done is to put all of that queuing safely on the property so the building situated on the site we have um all of the parking uh to the south of the building we do have an access road uh that that goes out to Sharon Drive we had a meeting last week with some of the department uh the department heads we understand maintaining that for emergency response and emergency access is is very important as well as being able to provide that access from Sharon Drive to facilitate construction so the goal is that we're going to be constructing the building behind Norton the entire time so a similar site diagram we have another open courtyard same concept as the north end this is not in enclosed within the overall building perimeter it has an opening and access to the the outdoor space to allow better ease maintenance and a better way to move from inside to outside that's the area in one are areas highlighted in two are our blacktop playing fields Ida area three is also our protected play areas you'll see there's an area two and three at the top of the site plan this has been in response to a request to make sure that we're providing uh play space in a greater proximity to the cafeteria which is directly to the south of those areas so we're kind of working through this with the working group in terms of making sure that we're seeing the students Journey throughout the day from cat including from cafeteria to outdoor play areas highlighted in four uh is the concept of an outdoor classroom accessible by a walking path through the woods the goal is to maintain as much of the existing wooded area to the east of the the proposed building as possible and provides some some walking paths uh or a nature trail through there and that's highlighted in area on number nine areas in five as I had mentioned the separate apparent pickup and drop-off area highlighted in number six is our main entry so the similar concept to the North End where we have one main entrance to the building flanked by an administrative space that has access and visibility to both parent pickup and drop off and the bus pick up and drop off area seven is a memorial garden there there are some some significant site features existing out here we want to make sure that we honor those and likely relocate them as part of the project so making sure that we we provide a place on site that allows that are areas highlighted in eight are bio retention so we're going to do a combination of storm water management uh both within the parking area that is down the bottom left-hand portion of the site plan but also the the big dashed line that's highlighted as number 11 is the Wetland it's not the Wetland Edge but the Wetland buffer uh most of our storm water we're directing back to that area we're going to provide a a we're going to clean up that what is a fairly disorganized Wetland and and allow it to become part of our storm water system are areas highlight in 10 is our loading and receiving area once again that's located near our physical plant as well as our kitchen and server area so similar floor plan diagram to the North End we've separated the learning communities from our Main Street concept so once again a lot of our public facing or what we call public curriculum spaces Core Curriculum gymnasium Media Center music art cafeteria all located in the area highlighted in Orange areas highlighted in blue are our learning communities so main level to the left upper level to the right very similar concept to the North End more detailed floor plan so our kindergarten Wing is in the the lower right hand corner of the Learning Community as well as some of our specials otpt our ABA classrooms and some of our resource rooms on the upper right portions are grade one and two Wing that is more or less replicated on the upper level for our Upper Elementary learning communities gym in the middle of the building flagged by the the media center as well as the cafeteria I glossed over this I didn't mention this in the north end but we do have a platform uh that is when I say platform think stage there's a there's a specific code uh reason why we call it a platform and not a stage but it's an elevated stage area uh that is double fronting both the gymnasium and the cafeteria uh this is consistent in both uh both floor plans but the concept is that you we can support an all school assembly in the gymnasium uh open a folding partition on that side of the platform close it on the cafeteria side so we can have a larger assembly or a larger presentation a more focused maybe it's a speaker or maybe the gyms being used and there's an after hours presentation or lecturer we can utilize the cafeteria close the gymnasium side of the platform open the cafeteria side so similar floor plan diagram you'll notice some similarities in the clarity of circulation between what we call our main street and the learning communities so very clear on axes main entry as well as access to all of our specials off of Main Street and our our learning communities being directly off of that access on views to Nature at the ends of all the corridors and all the major intersections of the building natural light again being able to enter each part of the the building the areas in the media center and the art room were utilizing borrowed light which basically means we have large expanse of Glass on the exterior wall a corridor and then glass going into the curriculum space for art in particular that's actually very nice natural light on North light as well the ability to compartmentalize once again our learning communities from the more public areas of the building upper level floor plan we have grades three and four on the upper right grades five and six on the lower right we have the second floor of our media center and Upper Elementary art as well as some of our resource areas off of Main Street so from a diagrammatic stop me if you've heard this one before uh Clarity of circulation views to Nature ability to bring in natural light to the spaces and the ability to compartmentalize in terms of our our renderings I will stipulate that we are as Rich mentioned we are back in front of the building committee next week where we are assuming that we'll have some updates we've received some comments regarding some of the the articulation and material use in these renderings so we want to show it to our building committee first before we we we socialize it so Main Street main entry from The Pedestrian Boulevard parent pickup and drop off to the right bus pick up and drop off to the left are learning communities are to the right the building volume to the right our main entry on axes uh to the media center and the administration is Straight Ahead as well as our volume for our cafeteria is to the left looking at the classroom Wing from the parent pickup and drop off so use a brick similar similar materials um brick metal panel aluminum framed windows main entry from The Pedestrian Boulevard so a little bit of where we're headed we at our last working group meeting we discussed a little bit more of the details of the Interior Design talking material finishes types of flooring materials wall materials paint color schemes as well as some branding I want to make sure that we have a consistent neutral color palette across both the schools making sure that we're we're used utilizing accent colors that can go towards the distinction of some of our learning communities in a consistent accent color using neutral and natural finishes complemented by playful playful theme and you can see some precedent examples to the lower right of this and our next steps as part of the working group is starting to get into a little bit more of the personalization of the graphics within the learning communities understanding that for the most part outside of pre-K and K we have learning communities of grades one and two three and four and five and six whoops so as part of our working group just kind of going through uh some of the concepts for our circulation corridors areas that we can start to engage students in the spaces in between their curriculum classes uh supporting some breakout or peer-to-peer learning as well as providing some curriculum opportunities along along the way looking at specifically for the Early Childhood classrooms borrowing some of what works best at Darcy now in the modular box configuration and some of the the Specialty Lighting that supports what goes on in the school as well as providing a nice uh even space kindergarten through grade six classrooms again you'll see the neutral palette curated by accent colors as well as making sure that when we get into our room by room analysis we'll be talking about things like you know where's the tackable surfaces where are the white boards where the magnetic boards where are the the interactive displays and exactly what types of quantities and requirements we have in say a typical classroom so Media Center uh looking to activate some of these spaces uh with accent lighting areas of carpet tile Acoustics are always important so we'll be discussing strategies for providing um even comfortable acoustic level in some of these larger spaces making sure that we're also supporting the way finding in a way that's consistent with our learning communities as well and the image to the bottom right of the screen this concept of a learning stair an area that students can can you can put a class uh with a with a speaker at the bottom of the area as shown in the image but this is also just a fun place for kids to hang out and maybe read a book together or do some small group learning or peer-to-peer learning hopefully not getting into too much trouble along the way but uh gymnasium so we we actually have two types of gymnasium floors that that are identified in the Ed Speck we're kind of working in the working group to understand um Port floor versus wood floor but making sure that we're providing the flexibility for dividing the gymnasium in half as well as all of the gymnasium equipment Etc cafeteria resilient tile working in some of our neutrals in our accent colors putting bring in some some natural wood colors uh in wood veneer and again making sure that acoustically we're making uh the we're making sure the space performs and then some of our specialized education uh this these are these are really important when we get into the room by room under making sure that we understand uh what equipment is in there what the needs of the students are to conventionally we usually see these to be a more neutral color palette so we may just Target some areas where we provide some accent colors okay as I had mentioned we have a number of community events that are coming up starting with this Saturday will be in a booth along next to the district at the Fall Festival the superintendent has promised me that the best hot dogs in in the state are available on Saturday so we'll we'll see uh we then in a all right uh so in addition to some of the open houses where we'll be providing some boards to be displayed uh we do have two Community meetings at the end of this month September 26th for the North End and September 27th for Norton uh we will then have a more informal um uh Coffee Talk uh for Norton on October 3rd and for North End on October 4th that's more of a just uh we'll give a brief presentation and then just be around for people to to approach ask questions uh Etc and then mid-october we have a virtual presentation as well as a question and answer period um October 16th for Norton October 17th for the North End and as always the project emails superintendent's email address I'm sure that's uh that's public now it's public anyway but uh and then our project website at this time yeah so as uh Rich had mentioned uh we've gone through uh the the North End cost estimate um as we as you may have heard there have been some um some cost escalation in the market um and this community is not unique this region is not unique uh our initial schematic design cost estimates came in above our budgets um we have went through a value management process with the ngsbc uh to bring us to within uh where where we want to be for budget and the goal for all of these budget considerations and value management considerations especially at this stage is to make sure that we're not compromising curriculum space all right the last thing the the last thing that we want to do is impact the the spaces that the students are going to be in so our first round of North End value management were were more about constructability materiality um things that you don't necessarily if I didn't tell you this you wouldn't know um so we were able to get that North End Within our budget or within our acceptable range of the budget for Norton we're have a similar budget overage and we are working our way through that value management process with the same goals and the same criteria and we anticipate next week at the ngsbc meeting to finalize those value management recommendations is there anything you want to I think a great example is something like terrazzo floor super expensive heavy duty floor built into the initial design substantial savings to go with a contemporary high-performing file form something like that uh large huge glass window can be dramatically more cost effective by inserting framing so the top the glass pieces are smaller still has a great look great performance just substantially more cost effective so we went through that process with the group for the North End a little trickier at Norton because you also face the escalation on the demo of the building uh so you know for us is Justin said maintaining the instructional space the experience for the kids in the community is a real priority uh after that I think our group has placed a bit of a premium to the extent that we can on being climate friendly for you know not just for the planet but for the sustainable energy uh future costs piece of it so you know we're really working hard to ensure that those components remain in the project and the designs um and so we're really trying to meticulously as a group go through every component of the project with the guidance of tacton and arcadis and Ong and uh really try and hone in on where can we make this the best possible experience for our kids it's the greatest value making sure we stay within a budget I would point out also in the Norton site we have added two ABA rooms to the plan the school district made a very strong case that we had a need for more program space for Aba programs for students and so that is an add-on but one that we felt was an essential one that the committee is has endorsed that because I think I mean if people are going to talk grab the microphone I'm thinking for people at home is it televised yeah I tried to project a little bit but if you wanna yeah we'll know because Richard started talking around sub questions I I have one quick question what's ABA mean Rob if you want a problem it's okay I just wanted to know what it was applied Behavior Analysis yeah yeah some of them are non-verbal um they may be behaviorals that behaviors that are involved and they need a very specialized instruction and um and environment it's a growing population yeah can going off of that are all those students directed to Norton um what will what uh the hope is is that all the students at the South End of the district who need a program like that will be directed to Norton and those that are at more of the North or the central uh area of town will be um directed to Highland s where they have them still currently classrooms at Island there are classes currently at Highland there are three of them and at this point um they're very full and uh there's something like 27 to 29 students in there and so we have one classroom at Norton right now we started moving in that process and then the hope is to add the second classroom one once the new school opens and we have the room yes oh thanks um thanks for the presentation a couple questions um geothermal in Norton do you I didn't see anything there are you going to um do that and then also I noticed this kind of displayed floor plan and for lack of a better description descriptor for it um is that just an aesthetic or is it spacing um just curious why it's not more not more orthogonal right yeah okay so I'll start uh our basis of design and in the current cost estimate has geothermal heating and cooling for both buildings we were able to to go through a value management process where we were able to maintain that in North the North End we have a slightly different uh discussion to have at Norton where we as one of the value management options that the ngsbc will be entertaining is whether to go to a different mechanical system or the same the same end mechanical system but the fuel source to be slightly different so and as far as the um the The Kinks in the floor plan we typically do this in order to allow areas of the building to be more open for natural light but also provide some opportunities for breakout spaces within the corridors if you think of likely the school you and I went to school in uh basically one long linear Corridor with classrooms on either side if we simply if we simply take the opportunity to make that perhaps a little wider at the end we may be able to put in an interactive display board down at the end of the corridor and support a small group activity down there so it's a it's a way that we try to introduce some flexibility into the curriculum to kind of support more more potential modalities of of teaching and instruction whether it's peer-to-peer small group or or singular student learning so yeah right I actually have three and then I'm going to leave this to the committee because I'm sure they're going to tackle this with you my first reaction to the windows was whoa especially in the library because light is not good for books so I'm glad that the superintendent said that there should be or is probably some flexibility in decreasing the size of those windows or some shade um my other question was actually similar to Ian about the ABA I mean are we assuming that in future years that we is there any convertibility should you need more space for Aba in other schools and then my third is um fields are they Turf are we aiming for grass fields here I'll going backwards order if that's okay natural turf fields not Synthetic Turf these are not 90 99 of the time these are going to be fields for recess and gymnasium and not necessarily competitive Fields so natural Turf for those areas I already forgot your second question ABA classrooms they're sized according to the general classroom size and I believe Robin we also want to have toilets in those rooms so that they would be able to support that early Elementary in classroom toilet so future proofing the flexibility of the spaces there they are classroom sized yes and first question was was a comment about the windows as the husband of a library director I can tell you that we will uh make sure that we do not burn the books uh within the media center that's the husband of a library director that was the worst phrase I could I could have used so um I just had a quick comment um I wanted to thank rich and your committee um especially for the fabulous Outreach because I received those two mailers those two flyers and I thought they were really well done and very inviting of the community to come in and and help us out with as we move along so thanks for including that and please take that back to your committee uh uh I forgot I was gonna say no it's okay I was I want to thank Rich to us um I just lost it again I'm getting too old uh oh I'm sorry regarding the uh the uh the cost lessons for construction you're working through the value management so uh so as far as the physical layout structure does anything you present tonight gonna change that regard or you're not quite there yet I think you're looking more you talk about geothermal and some other things I got the sense that it's not so much related to changing the the layout structure to building reducing classes right because of the so so we're not going to see much of a change really in what you presented from a schematic point of view it's more of materials and other things I hope that's the case right uh and I would say you know I think Treasures has some really good projects over the years uh I've only been here about 24 years so even before my time there's been some good projects but sometimes we tend to take shortcuts here we are at schools you know years later so yeah please um build these in a way that they're flexible so in the future if we need to add on or reconfigure we can actually do that we're not boxed into things and but based on my scene tonight in in past iterations it looks like the team's got that nailed down so so again thank you I do want to thank rich and the building committee for all their work I I remember when we interviewed the candidates we had so many people interested and they've been awesome so far so this is great looking forward to the next step so thank you rich thank your team and let me know we appreciate all the work any other questions if I turn over uh Ian well here we go I already have my own microphone thanks always prepared Tim stall it from the somewhere um let's see where to begin um so I think in our last presentation I had asked this question about the fuel sources for the schools and you had mentioned that any kind of uh geothermal or solar was off the table and now it's in a diagram for the North End is that and because you had said that it was not priced in in the in the uh cost estimate that we had had a few I guess three months ago so if that's still the case is that just a proposed site for geothermal Wells um or is that something that has the cost has come down or become more reasonable where not just running a gas line for you know gas furnaces would do the trick so um I'm trying to remember that that discussion the last time that we were here the geothermal Fields uh have have been in the basis of design for these schools the overall project budget has a a um a modifier on top of the construction cost for environmental or energy efficient enhancements we have selected the geothermal well field as part of that um anything you want to add to that yeah go ahead the um the original budget that was developed by Colliers that went out to a referendum did not specifically delineate uh GL thermal system um that's a multi-million dollar add-on but we have said right from the beginning to the Architects if we can afford it we really would like to do as much as we can the original budget included I believe it was one million dollars per school for Energy Efficiency uh the geothermal system will cost substantially more than that we designed uh both buildings so that they could accommodate a geothermal system uh when we got the pricing back the estimates back for the North End School we found we were able to go through and make other changes and reductions and keep the thermo geothermal system for those of you who don't know geothermal system allows the building to be fully electric uh you're not running any gas or propane or anything like that you are picking up well I'm not going to run into it but it's it's an all-electric building the Norton school project at this time still includes a geothermal system we have not yet gone in and looked uh closely at the overage and what kind of reductions have to be made as Dr Solon noted we don't have as much flexibility in making cuts at Norton as we did at the North End School so whether the geothermal system will be able to be kept at that building is to be determined yeah thank you um so secondly is the the exterior field so basically anything that's a rectangle I think you'd cut you had asked already Sam but any any rectangular field on the exterior of the buildings are grass fields um I don't see anything for baseball or kickball there is that because they just look to be assumed to be soccer fields or something like that is that a spec that you need to hold to or or because I know both um you know Chapman and Norton currently well Norton not so much that has something that looks like a baseball field but um uh is is that something you just can paint the lines or something and then you have a baseball field or how does how does that work there foreign yeah I would say we have those discussions ahead of us uh right now we have we have considerable area that we've designated as recreational play um whether or not we choose one of the fields uh to have a baseball diamond or at least that type of infrastructure um base paths Etc I think that's part of the next round of development so if you recall I can't recall if we had origin conceptual site plans in less detail that we showed tonight the last time we were here I don't believe we had um Fields identified on either Norton or the north end and it's something that we heard loud and clear when we came to this body as well as the council so yeah I bring it up because I remember the like the very preliminary designs I know there was a baseball diamond in the top left corner upper left right there yeah right um and so that that brings me to the last thing now um I've mentioned many times I I attended Norton school my son just graduated from Norton school Tim went to Norton school um and so I noticed that the fields you can have one field I guess that would sort of represent what the field is now for the the lower grades it's sort of way up front um and then you have this field off to the side which I guess is an attempt to preserve more of the forest maybe or not because it because right now like you had mentioned the cafeteria when when lunch is finished the kids go right out to the playgrounds either front or back brought it from the cafeteria it looks like this time you would have kids going for lunch and then they would have to march across the school to get to that side field over there and so I just was wondering if those positions are final or how how does that how would the the flow be planning to work there so it's something they're either one it's something that we have heard in our working groups we've tried to address by putting some of the place structures uh closer to the cafeteria I think um we have discussed with our landscape architect and civil engineer to try and get some green play area aside from the formal structures uh closer to the cafeteria we've also heard during our working groups that there is a distinction between recess and and maybe PE play PE classes outside so I uh I I think we have some some massaging to do with those areas frankly yeah thank you no problem and you know I'm just I'm going to throw this out there why not flip the design at Norton it almost makes sense to have it go the other way but I don't know is it because you wanted you're trying to get those Woodland views there because if not you're facing a neighborhood the other way I guess it's a little bit of that a little bit of where we have our main utilities that are coming to the building closer to the areas that we know that there are the high utility draws or where our physical plants going to be as and where our parking is ETC um so we typically want to have our our public and our staff parking close to those more public areas of the building um but yeah that that's at least the reason we think it's a strong reason uh maybe there's a little bit more development in terms of the location of the play areas in relation to the exterior but okay I think that's all I have I like the North End a lot I'll just say that thanks yeah so I I know when we uh voted for uh the the options the very preliminary plan so all kinds of fields at the North End and that was back a couple years ago where a lot of folks thought hey let's suppose many Community fields we can I know Adam mentioned the baseball but I think there's also balance right because we couldn't put so many Recreation spaces before they're not covered by the grant right by uh reimbursement so um I always say is continue to have the path there guys are going I think you're doing a great job in the future if if we can't put fields in now as long as things are configured and there's utilities roughed in that we do in the future that's a huge Plus for Treasure because uh we like to have that kind of luxury to expand if we can have a question yeah thank you Johnny with regard to Norton uh the wetlands does that include the wetlands in the north west Corner does that include tree cutting there it looked like there were a couple of spots for trees in your schematic yeah um based on our preliminary analysis in the civil engineers analysis um and the wetlands biologist there are currently invasive species that are in those Wetlands so we do have a responsibility to clean that out it's a wetland that is more or less a disorganized storm water retention area for the site already so as part of our formalization of the storm water management system we will be cutting and replanting in that area yes and re regrading so I'm just curious they're gonna be like lawn with trees no it'll be more uh Woods yeah it'll be uh more uh Native species of of wetland species yeah okay thank you I got a couple here um the access road uh is that going to be gated yes um well that's that's the so that's an open question right now tentatively what are you thinking in terms of gating it presumably a gate at Sharon Drive so and then something up near Norton so the I um if you don't mind I'll toggle back so um we've had it's part of ongoing discussions that we're having with the district and the way that um the way that bus pick up and drop off currently operates we know at minimum uh this needs to be an emergency access uh and under that scenario we would either be gated or removable bollards uh at at the area by the loading dock and then the area up by Sharon Drive under that scenario we'll still maintain a pedestrian access so kids families that are walking to school will be able to access it but from a day-to-day operation it would the concept is that for an emergency access road it will be for emergency vehicles now we say that to say it provides a future opportunity if bus routing shows that um you know having all of our buses come go down on the street as um as they currently do provides um longer longer bus times higher traffic in that area we have the ability to potentially use that as as a secondary way to relieve that congestion that hasn't been vetted yet but it it's it's out there um but as it's currently constituted the assumption is that it would be an emergency area yeah I think the one caveat I want to make there that you know the idea that old buses could potentially be routed out there we anticipate basically eight total buses in the building so it's not like the Macy's Parade is going out the back every day at most you know it could be two yeah three but um I just don't want people to become alarmed that oh they're going to buses out the back and it's going to be overwhelming that's not part of the initial plan anyway but you know I think it's fair as Justin said to to not you know cast anything in stone at this relatively early juncture yeah I I understand I appreciate that completely and really where I was coming from is uh the kids walking around on the road basically yeah and Sam asked a good question too like at a fire drill you know can people exit out that way yes there's there's space there for fire egress and they could even uh go down that path towards Sharon there's actually a good distance there uh before you get to the road yeah but generally we're not going to be traffic will be accessing the building from that direction right now yeah yeah okay that was that was my question thank you my concern um you mentioned a platform between the kitchen and the gym I can talk I mean the platform if is is a space Oh go ahead I'm just curious is that somewhat soundproof because all I'm imagining is the Norton like curtain and if you've got you know men's adult basketball playing on one side and somebody trying to do this presentation on the other and I'm not asking for something expensive or anything like that but pointing that out in advance like sure Justin's language we want the rooms to be able to perform yeah right I'm learning but the um the platform you know quasi-stage sort of space that can be used to uh and sealed off basically on either side to permit uh engagement on either side that doesn't interfere on either side or opened to provide access from both sides like a theater in the round sort of thing if you will but we we do intend on being able to you know designate spaces that that can perform on either side of that thank you if I can just add to that um the technical answer is that we're we are required to maintain STC sound transmission coefficient values within our curriculum spaces so we have folding partitions that have higher elevated STC ratings uh in the 60s for these areas and that includes additional gasketing in between the panels as well as below at the top track in the bottom so you're saying it's relatively soundproofed because she's just read a bunch of jerking out unfortunately okay yeah I'm not asking for Perfection yes but that's the idea okay thank you it just to Circle back because I didn't I actually didn't hear all of it I was playing around with these microphones the EIC the idea now is to actually not have it all at Chapman and kind of have it split between Chapman and Norton it very generally is all I'm wondering as we were talking about um is that different type of EIC yes EIC is early intervention Center okay uh which is always been part of the plan and will be at the North End okay um uh the ABA program right now is exclu well up until this year was exclusively at Highland okay and we moved some of that program onto the south end of town uh and you know the idea being when we open the new building we'll retain ABA programming on the south end of town closer to students that live in that area and when we redistrict and drop the enrollment from 900-ish at Highland to 700 ish it kind of helps the proportions for special education services if it was exclusively at Highland and you dropped the population to 700 uh it becomes disproportionate to a greater degree so moving some of the ABA services to the Norton makes sense on a lot of levels okay thank you the energy system that you're using you mentioned a modifier to me that invokes an image of this is in addition to the building and it's optional that suggests to me that you're building you're playing right now for Norton is to have the Legacy Energy Systems in there whatever it is presumably oil because we don't have gas there right now is that fair to say what I just said so um I think you're covering two different issues I'll try and Tackle them the modifier that I mentioned was in the overall project budget which as uh the NG SPC chair said indicated correctly this was a energy efficient fund that was part of the overall project budget whether or not that is photovoltaics improved insulation values other energy efficient measures I believe the committee and certainly the design team took that as an opportunity for energy enhancement in the buildings we had a presentation at the ngsbc regarding different Building Systems and ones that could be both fossil fuel driven or renewably driven and geothermal with heat pumps and chill beam system uh is the the chill beam system was a system that would be consistent whether or not it's fossil fuel driven or renewably driven from geothermal so the options that we're looking at as alternates to the geothermal system for Norton include trying to maintain The Building Systems the end Building Systems and other in other words the chill beam system as much as possible and whether or not you may want to backfill me on this um go ahead so the fuel source will likely be electric so that you can eventually if you use PV it can be you know Carbon free or we may have to introduce a small um gas-fired boiler because of the air-to-air exchange heat pumps work well up to a certain degree a certain temperature and when it gets really cold they don't perform as well so that would only be as like a backup in case and that would likely be um propane fired with a small tank either buried on site so our goal and mission is to optimize the the mechanical systems for the to maximize Energy Efficiency and ideally set you up if we can't do it within the project you know first at the construction set you up so that if you do go with a PPA or a photovoltaics in the future you can be carbon free so first swing at it is all electric with geothermal second is a small backup with propane and we haven't really explored all our ones because there's a lot of options within those those two areas that we really can look at from a value perspective so I just want to be clear on this I mean I understand that air source heat pumps a lot of them don't do well down below 20 degrees 10 degrees you want to be careful about the bottom but I I hadn't when I've talked to people about Geo that they haven't ever mentioned that because it's kind of like you're just living in your basement and that's where I'm at a little bit of a loss there so and Norton if we can't afford the Geo system okay then it would be the air-to-air heat pumps which would mean all electric and there would be no Geo so when it does get cold we would want a backup system of some kind of boiler to to support that so that's that's the plan anyway at this point or at least the strategies so is the standard heating baked into the cost without the modifier oh yeah yep okay that's the part I'm not getting here just speaking just hypothetically if you took that out what's the cost of that instead of the Geo and also the numbers I got from just I'm just yeah I'm not asking you to hold to this by any means yeah but Rich had said a few minutes ago that the number for Geo is more than a million maybe a few million dollars it is yep when I talk to people they said the Geo Wells were probably 700 000.

but four of those sites have already been addressed priorities so that kind of knocks that line item down from an overlap of 11 sizing prioritizing that to seven is two of their priorities in hardcore surfacing or safety and um equipment providing for options for students I would add that on a separate track that we've already implemented in the middle of an assessment of all of our playground structures district-wide to kind of help augment supplement this this report as well so yes we are addressing that very issue that which is outside yes I agree um they have like a dog with two of that who have no other priorities uh their outcome was in solar so there is an additional like that one at the bottom solar panels um so in our collaboration with Arc and their solar studies we showed locations or placements of potential solar structures um and three of the sites have prioritize those because in most cases the solar panels were placed in a way uh to support the students to be available or shape for students like the school Side Community priorities right it's like the objects or I don't know anything about the school but I think Christianity I think we should have technology um right would would it be fair to say that the community surveys were out from the town hall meetings that that we gathered before this what was it before okay so it's not good so for example your questions yes the solar structure Canada um some sites it was you couldn't make that word so then put it over parking um but in many cases uh one of the improvements to campus was to redo the parking lot and we know these solar panel uh projects are a quicker timeline and they happen before the parking lot of sequence can be continued so we don't want to place a solid structure there and and prevent any future configuration prioritize the subjects it's about to digestion we have tried to do some digesting for whatever is a new freezing um so we did sorry another data point first the facility development um saw all the data that you've just seen and did an activity where they um you know we said all right we've got the state matching fund eligibility um there is a tool where the users were able to set an escalation to 2026 dollars you know we still have that funding eligibility 57.2 um and you can see this is another he's not showing the frequency of the current of where they chose to vote on um and since it is uh eligibility for modernization they are focusing intentionally uh on the scope categories two and three the existing classrooms facilities so you can see just based on this heat map that most people chose to focus on scope Academy number two the repairs and Replacements so 42 results in that category as opposed to 13 in the modernization of the year and it just so happened the highest frequency of that prepared replacement happens at Renaissance at Fisher and George of the very highest second activity then utilize that remaining 15.7 million we're guessing in timeline of these projects and I guess all right now that you've used the state eligibility funds Let's Pretend these projects are being done in year 2028 and now have added the whole boards open you can prioritize anything you want um and the priority is still align very closely with some category two and three classroom modernization we've got the highest frequency um the next highest frequency is actually category number nine the welcome Center's staff support clustering around the Renaissance academies George and the two Outlanders but also the chat Meyer so we start to see some Trends it's not really stacking in the face of Trends but we do start to see that classrooms you know you work towards repair replacement modernization and configuration is is important to the facility development Community as well as here at the Welcome Center yeah one of um and I know the mixed together makes the parents and teachers and into their students the students have the those other movies you know like the survey and the where the kids they were specific sessions for students to feedback um you know I I don't know what their feedback was but I took that yeah okay okay thank you um okay so another what-if scenario what if the state uh reimburses that 60 then we have 34.5 million and this will happen a few years out so we'll pretend this is happening in 2031 applied escalation that prioritize towards certain floor between 5 million and again the majority of the map the occurrences so you've said 60 not 80.

in other words I've been doing this a long time I take the job of Safety and Security very seriously you will not find an individual who cares more about the Safety and Security of the children staff and teachers of Apple Valley Unified School District nor a man who's more dedicated to the school system each week since my employment began I met with a director and the manager of the IIT Department to discuss any issues needs and concerns I might have as well as any concerns they might have with me at no time was it indicated that I was doing anything wrong and in fact just the opposite was true with comments like we understand you're the one that took care of that for us and we appreciate your honesty and Candor with us during these meetings also comments like we're glad you came here we really needed your help and even you're doing a great job just this past Friday I was even it was even discussed that we were going to miss these weekly meetings once my probation was finished and it was even suggested that we continue these meetings after after the probation though that comment was made with a little bit of levity that was just last Friday yesterday afternoon I left to take care of a serious ongoing issue at Vanguard most the way there I was texted by my director and asked to return to the office I did so I was taken into the director's office by Jason and HR representative I was told my services were no longer needed and I was being let go without cause after every indication up to that point that I was fitting in and doing a great job you can imagine my surprise I love this job for several reasons but none more than it gave me back my family my last job was very demanding and kept me away from home every week all week I missed so much I have a special needs son who goes to the school district and this job gives me time to be with him to work with him and help my wife with him my wife and I have been working diligently with the student services to get a plan in place that will be beneficial for all this job gave me access to be able to do the job I was made for and still have family life I would really love to keep my job with the school district if I have done something wrong I would appreciate the opportunity to correct and apologize from any issue I might have caused and continues and improved individual here at the school district I would appreciate this is pre-inflation no they're they're uh I think in excess of two do I have that right Laurel two million for the the Geo field it set itself yep yep okay so we're looking at a combination of maybe a hybrid where we use a little bit more electric to to drive down uh the number of Wells so we're there's there's going to be about seven or eight options um next week on the table to look at to to get us back to budget but not give up everything um okay so I uh I think two last points which is uh solar you're not are you incorporating that in your budget right now no the buildings will be PV ready so the electrical systems will be prepared for it because from my perspective it doesn't make any sense to incorporate that and it can be the way taxes work and everything else it just doesn't make sense um sorry I didn't jot down the second question uh oh and um grant funding the IRA has there been a review to look for anything there so that's um in the conversation part of your discussion yeah it's definitely part of the conversation and um um I think we're we're figuring out it out as well as the government is which is the way that they plan to fund these and assess these so um we are familiar with all of the the latest Grant strategies and we're working with the district to monitor those to see if they're they're worth pursuing so yeah yeah and we we also have met um with eversource and those grants are already well underway we've already signed our um mou the district has so there's definitely those grants are available to us and we're I think we're in pursuing step path to um which is is the second most aggressive as far as Energy Efficiency so thank you yeah well I think I think there's I said one last question uh because I uh I've been working I've been doing this on my my my current job um will these schools be required to or will they have any EV parking spaces so we're required to have um at minimum EV ready spaces I don't I'm not sure that we've gotten into exactly um what ratio uh there would be we typically in all of our schools currently provide conduit at minimum to Future spaces this project is before the requirement for publicly funded projects to have 20 percent EV charging stations in parking lots we're not compelled to meet that requirement so really it's a matter of the the challenge with that particular requirement is when we talk to districts is how do we how do we set up a a system to to allow people to charge it but have kind of a charging mechanism not electrically charging but funding mechanism to fund it so I think those conversations are ahead of us in terms of where and how how many uh there would be in each of the school parking areas thank you so I guess this wraps up into my question would be um and I'm putting my teacher hat on storage space because that's a hot commodity in classrooms so what are we doing about closets and so forth um which would that be the next conversation like what are the phase of discussions here geez I don't know I've never heard that concern uh in schools uh so yes um there there are where we're in the process of going from the Ed Speck which is a concept of how much storage there is to an actual making sure is that we're going through a room room by room we're having instructional storage we're having facility storage we're having custodial storage you know the what we don't want to have happen is have one big storage area and then everybody fight over it so there's storage that are that is baked into classrooms proper for everyday storage or teacher storage and student storage then there's the kind of whole building storage that we'll be going through on a room by room the green area yeah so so um as Jeff correctly pointed out and I neglected to in part of my description of the our learning communities the areas that are highlighting green are teacher planning areas uh where those are really teacher work rooms for those specific teachers within the learning community so when we get into the room by room we'll talk about exactly what needs to be there in for storage as well more paragraphs yeah just one last point to your point Adam with regard to EV charging as I understand it the infrastructure the financing structures for the infrastructure it's not really settled in the world right now and there's a lot of people going after it coming up with different financing structures some of which they may actually install for free that's that's I've heard from people who are planning to do that with startup businesses um and they basically would just you know charge the say 20 cents is whatever Source charges they'll tack on a nickel that'll pay for their infrastructure over time so what I hope you keep in mind is the possibility of not just making it EV ready but as EV ready as possible the governor is talking about you know Banning gas cars in Connecticut 10 years from now or whatever it is I have a I have an EV I have a feeling that it will more and more people will get them over time and so we may want to expand the infrastructure and so really just following on what Tony had said about allowing the um allowing us an easier Pathway to changing what we have over time I think could be helpful particularly with that with EVS thank you that's a fair comment thank you thanks I think the rest of the questions uh from the board I do want to on behalf of the board do you want to thank Tech time for being here tonight and also the committee and team performance work and uh again Jeff and then it became a surprised and you know we have a our own uh pack route of documentation on the project which is also a town website so I for anybody interested I believe this is available on the Tom website correct the most recent version please uh take a look bring in some comments to Dr Solomon's email address send them often because he likes reading his emails but I want to just but thank you and uh so we're gonna turn over to the next Topic in the agenda which is the opening schools presentation which you're all more than welcome to stay um I'm pretty sure I'll be shorter and this was this was great great great length and uh you covered a lot so but you guys did great yeah well it's hard from the dead normally but he's coming along thank you but it is you know having to talk to teachers over and over again that gets chopped um [Music] thank you I think you know um all right everybody uh thanks for your patience during that presentation I know everybody's really here for the opening of schools report um but no uh we will try and go through this quickly and kind of give everybody a sense of enrollment which certainly will have an influence on our school's construction but also you know our vision for the district just kind of reaffirming our goals as a school system we've done quite a bit over the summer and to kick things off for us tonight I want to introduce our chief operating officer Vincent massiana thank you thank you Dr sohen board members welcome back I do um have some quick um items I wanted to update you on and overall we had a very very good summer in School District Operations these are just some of the highlights we did hire 65 new employees and process them through roughly half of those were teachers and the rest were other employees you know ranging from Power Educators to lunchroom and playground AIDS and bus drivers and Food Service staff on the benefit side just three quick things new programs that are being launched again funded through the Cigna Wellness Styles we received but we have a roadmap to Wellness challenge for all our employees our participation rate generally speaking in health and wellness has been up thriving five is for all our new employees and we have a wellness ambassador program so that there'll be somebody in every single School building and in some cases multiple to help promote health and wellness Transportation all our buses are rolling we are sufficiently staffed by Deco with their drivers so we're in good shape right now on the technology front we handed out the seventh grade Chromebooks you know again to remind the board members we hand them out in seventh grade and the students keep those Chromebooks through 12th grade we did improve some of our classrooms replace the older technology with smart flat panels food and nutrition just I'm sorry everyone's aware there is free student breakfast for all students this year funded by the state there is a new Greenhouse that will be used by a culinary arts program as well as a food service program um on the fiscal Services side our 84.9 billion million dollar budget is in place it's being spent we um are being conservative as usual and you'll hear more about that as we go through the year and up Finance report and we've already started our initial preparations for the 24-25 budget it's hard to believe but it feels like we're always you know building a budget or managing through it so on the facility side we got a lot of of uh you know both major and minor projects done there were no shouts no Show Stoppers we opened all our buildings on time I knew cleaning contractor that started July 1 did a very respectable and good job overall there were some challenges and so I just have a few pictures here um and I ask can you tell what's wrong with this pipe that was at the humiston building behind the cinder block wall and I will in the interest of time if you look at the left side of the pipe it looks like a pipe into a fitting and if you look at the right side it looks like it's disintegrated because it did and this is a a condensate you know pipe that takes water from our heating system and runs it back into the heating system hummus then is is heated by steam so you know this is what happens after I'm assuming that pipe is a hundred years old it was repaired that larger pipe on the right side of the screen that went below the concrete stairs leading down from hummerston so it was a bit of a mess thankfully it was able to be repaired so these are the types of things that happen in the buildings that that we were able to resolve this summer a few highlights um do a little bathroom we did really what is going to be the final round of bathroom Renovations at Doolittle and by the way if you notice the top section of bathrooms the stall partitions are missing the students do not have to use them that way just one of those material delays um yeah it's you know not that communal so um it was not a budget cut and Amy is well aware of it and she's waiting patiently the partitions should be in soon um High School window replacement project the top left and top right that's the same section of building left is the old single pane windows replaced on the right with the double pane low e-glass much much nicer aesthetically but also much better for the rooms because the glass that's installed will keep the heat in longer during the winter and keep the room cooler during the summer months the picture on the bottom right is an inside of a classroom really doesn't do it justice but the inside of the classrooms are much nicer as well and on the left bottom there that is the old main on main office entrance looks a lot newer now but we did replace that whole section I know that was a pet project of Mr martellia and it seems like Sam Rosenberg as well these are just some other random shots you know that Dodd Middle School all we did was refinish that floor it looks magnificent top right is the new Greenhouse that's been installed um we will have an official kickoff for all the board members and others will be invited to see what's what's happening in the greenhouse bottom left we upgraded all the parking lot lighting at Highland looks really cool if you want to go visit at night and some of the things you won't notice necessarily that driveway is leading towards the main game field at Cheshire high school and all the way on the right is we did a bunch of masonry repairs that nobody would ever see but always important to the maintenance of our building um and last thing that I did want to share with the board tonight is that at Highland where Dr Solon will talk a little bit about enrollment we're making room every everywhere we possibly can we are pretty much just about out of space even though we always squeeze something else in but that top two pictures that is the library resource room is what I called it we cut it in two roughly one-third and two-thirds being used for special education purposes we had to do it so it's no longer part of that Library use space the bottom left picture you'll see there's a sign that says storage which is no longer just storage we were able to add three cubicles for our learning support tutors again trying to make use of the space that we have and you could see kind of behind Mr Jeffrey there's these kind of sheer curtains so there's still some storage in there and then on the bottom right is actually one of the South hallways at Highland where you'll see that we added cubicles to be used Again by learning support tutors because the space that they were in had to be used for classroom space so we are and have done everything we possibly can at Highland the enrollment did go up a little bit higher than projected so you'll be hearing more about that starting in with the next planning committee and then the new schools we just covered that with tecton and Ong and you know Mr Gusenberg so key date there is that August of 2026 will be in those two new buildings we did quite a bit of work over the summer and that concludes my opening of schools remarks thank you so much any questions okay no certified teaching positions um are open at this time those were all filled um okay that's a newer position though for the record and then uh we do have para educator positions that are open across all the district schools that and that has been the position that is not so much only harder to fill but but harder to to keep we've seen quite a bit of turnover there so we still have about 21 or 22 open positions at this time but the recruiting on the teacher side went went very very well this year we're obviously happy to report that okay with that I'll turn it over to miss Solano [Applause] okay so I wanted to just highlight for you some of the summer happenings it seems like we are always planning for the opening of school starting in June and I wanted to share that we have 30 new teachers including our teacher in Residence who was training with us last year we have one new administrator in Jody Rhoden who is our principal over at Norton school as well as our three administrative transfers I wanted to just stress that what a rigorous hiring process we put folks through there are multiple rounds there are screening interviews performance tasks we have writing prompts that we ask people to participate in as well as doing demonstration lessons for our students or students that we gather together over the summer so we could see teachers teaching in addition to the reference checks we really do not take hiring lightly here it's one of the most important things we could do for our students so I want to thank mostly the building principals who organize this and see this through over the summer even at the point when they get a call in June or July that they now need to hire someone else and everything needs to change around putting this together so thank you to the principals for their hard work I also want to thank Kelly Grillo and Ryan Murphy and Mike Woods there were umpteen transition meetings for those internal Staffing changes both that started in June and continued through the summer as well as these new folks we also have a number of interns and student teachers and I would say we have upwards of 12 of those and Mr Woods conducted an orientation for all of the interns and student teachers earlier this month then everyone's favorite topic the curriculum writing Institute we held that in June that is just a snapshot of all of the folks who participated this year we could barely get everyone on the Highland stage here are some quick photos of all of the folks who are around the tables working on this we're working on authentic real world tasks that are aligned to our strategic objectives of complex thinking and social emotional learning and you could see just even at these tables you have a special ed teacher from the high school sitting next to an elementary Reading and math specialist sitting next to a math teacher so we had lots of great conversation and they got an inordinate amount of work done in the week after school start after school ended we have another picture here of the science satellite training that we did around the ngss we had folks from the Connecticut Science Center take about 2018 teachers through storyboarding of lessons and units which also enabled us to have vertical articulation from elementary to Middle to high school and everyone reported that it was incredibly helpful and that information was shared out in PD and then lastly shout out to both Mary gadd and Kristen pelz who worked with our science department chair on a chemistry lesson so it was great to get deeply involved in that so folks were really embedded in that work um then you know that we have a new teacher induction program this is just the kickoff of our orientation for new staff members so on day one Vin Jeff and I took all of our new teachers on a tour of Cheshire we took a bus tour to the new schools to where the new schools I'm sorry to wear the new school properties are and where our existing schools are and showed everyone the lay of the land as well as talk to them about everything that is Cheshire to to welcome them on the second day Scott Conway and Tom Lee walk spend half day with our teachers really getting them all the logins and passwords and Technical exposure that they need to kick off the year and then this year Erica bordnero worked with all of our elementary teachers to get them ready with instructional practices to support social emotional learning our Middle School and High School folks spent some time with Mike Anderson who's a consultant that you've heard us speak of before I'll talk more about that in a second and then lastly our building level orientation is run by our principals where our new teachers meet with them get the lay of the land and then in the afternoon our elementary folks spend time with Kevin Hanlon and his team getting people up to speed with our curriculum this is the beginning of the process and then we have follow-up meetings both at the building level at regular intervals and at the district to support our teachers during that August time we offered professional learning opportunities for all of our teachers and they had choices of professional learning one was to attend an in-person workshop with Mike Anderson another was to select one of the books that we we've chosen to focus on for an individual reading and the other was a self-paced online course so we're happy to report that people from all walks are all walks all levels all subject areas were present for that and these pictures you can see you know physics teachers working with band teachers working with our new teachers working with elementary teachers and even some of our literacy support teachers were there at that session so I I want to just take this moment in talking about the planning to also recognize all the work that goes in over the summer from our principals to our coaches to our Middle School Division leaders and our department chairs to really plan for professional learning on the 25th when people come back that that doesn't happen by accident and it takes a lot of concerted effort to make sure that we have a good and robust professional learning session when teachers come back so what's new for this year teacher evaluation is not new but the platform that we're using is we are going with Vector Solutions temporarily for one year it's a platform that we're familiar with because it's where all of our training videos are housed and we will be using that as the as the platform to house all of the evaluations the reason why we had to switch is because the one that we were using was free from the state and then that that ended that funding dried up so we had to find something in this interim year the other thing that's new oh goodness then I thought you changed that whoops I handed it to you I feel like I've been pranked so I will say that the real name of this assessment is the pass and it stands for a pupil attitudinal survey about your attitude towards self and school and this is um you've all heard about it before this year we are implementing it it is to proactively identify and address non-academic barriers to learning um and then our last one is about purposeful play and Kim dessert is spearheading that effort as well um along with me to to Really partner with eastcon and to offer training and coaching to all of our kindergarten teachers well that was interesting thank you any questions about any of that okay thanks like uh education wise uh age-wise you know um it ran the gamut but I think you remember us talking about the fact that the elementary team we at the elementary principals and I had gotten together earlier in the year and and we were very happy to be able to get an early jump on hiring this year and at the elementary level we've hired some outstanding new teachers so they're going to need our support but they um just had excellent recommendations from their um their student teaching and their the principals who they worked with so we're very excited some of them were fresh out of school all that way but I think this year more than any other we found candidates that were just exceptional who were brand new thank you Marlene uh it's not the first time Mr salamini's had to censor a meeting probably won't be the last but uh anyway um just want to you know kind of go through the opening of schools it was really exciting we kicked off convocation our theme this year was The Wizard of Oz if you haven't seen the video yet it's available on our YouTube channel um I I was duly impressed unfortunately we filmed this well I was doing a speaking engagement in South Korea and had to write the script before I went out of town and the filming was all done while I was away and Marlene killed it is Dorothy and we even had our own Vin man Vin made his acting debut so if you haven't seen it yet you got to check it out it's really funny um but it's also meaningful because it gave us the opportunity to talk about uh the Tin Man not having a heart but social emotional learning is a key part of what we do in the Cheshire Public School Systems the uh scarecrow not having a brain but we are grounded in complex thinking and uh the the lion not having courage it gave us the opportunity to talk about self-efficacy and the belief that teachers uh can make a significant difference for the kids that they have in front of them every day and that they do so as much as it was fun it was meaningful I want to thank Mr perigini for coming and addressing our teachers and staff as well as Ann Harrigan for being there we appreciate seeing you guys at conflict convocation and appreciate the support is always one of the real Marquee highlights was the celebration of our teacher of the year Catherine zukis a first grade teacher at Norton incredibly deserving teacher and um she really gave an inspirational talk highlighting students from from the past and really touching upon the what the value of a relationship with the teacher and the student is and how that really shapes lives so it was really inspirational Christina view from Doolittle was our para educator of the year we've for the last several years highlighted a para educator for the incredible work that they do really among the young sung Heroes that make a difference for our students and staff so congratulations to Christina so I'm going to go through real quick the enrollment at each School highlighting the projected enrollment when I say projected enrollment nasdec gave us projections last spring for what we could anticipate in the 23 4 school year we'll start with Darcy oops going the wrong direction there some quick shots of the opening of school to see little ones it's always so much fun to to see them enter our schools for the start of school experience we projected 35 students ended up with 29 so that was uh percentage-wise one of the larger differences that we had there are still 114 students in our Pre-K programs at Darcy so we are quite busy there a lot of those students with more substantial needs and we do a tremendous job supporting those students and families at Chapman kicking off the school year we had a projected enrollment of 377 and have 370 students enrolled relatively close on a percentage basis there but under it do little our annual New Year countdown we had a projection for 546 students and wound up with 531 about 19 students per class I want to say been our our budget was 18-8 was that overall for the district 18.

before but when you right now you said 66 okay remember so we run some scenarios of putting this together is by no means we set in stone it's just like the graphics diagrams we revealed in the town hall because we can change based on your input but it's a conversation starter at least how to run the organization scenarios um so I mentioned the immediate needs let's just get those done tiny next year um so allocate 4.5 million to address those immediate needs items identified in the facility condition assessments um I would recommend these items be vetted by your Brazilians team and you know confirmed that this is indeed what needs to happen but basically is that 4.5 million uh earmarked for projects that need to happen right now that would be a question right there yeah yeah so she's saying 4.5 million so now it's down to 4.5 minutes okay this is how much it would cost for the month to do okay right all right 75 million was something that was left over from the first positions excited so I'm sorry so when we see the next generation of things um could be tracking against like physical psych community and they're like Okay so Linda vista's TK toilets right okay that's that's in here so that thought checked off right I've really been able to have some lens on them together like what of those priorities get taken care of you that's okay yeah and to to that point across to check it is a project that I've already hooked up foreign category number two repairs and replacements for these allocations and that would it sends it in the text there but once both um both of those dollar house the 57.6 and the 34.5 our place towards still category number two you will completed about 77 of the wording massive category and then the other prioritized projects um since that heat map pointed towards those category as well um the scenario runs that 52.7 million towards scope category number three the classrooms modernization that we can be here and I'll remind you that again this would primarily address the TK kindergarten special education classrooms they require specialty facilities um not all of them because some facilities where we needed new construction to be able to throw another achievements looking back at this the last time I'll show you the slide once we want to go back to it but I'm cross-checking you know the scenario against our roadmap and I'm saying okay we are using the data we're trying to make form decisions based on this data you have roles in the workforce housing component with engaged to the community with debating towards successful implementation here but how are we supporting the community specifically through these modernization projects they're supporting the students how are we supporting the community and how are we supporting Federal students specifically if they're specific needs that were expressed to us so here are a couple other project types tied to those guiding principles and again to make this a more manageable dollar amount I've broken it out into tier one science and tier two sites and you can see the list down below for reference there so in the vein of supported Middle School Equity School schoolers addressing the gymnasiums and locker rooms about being there and these are all in 2020 today's dollars and in supporting Community connections um that would be addressed by the welcome centers and community centers which is all in the same category so that Welcome Center as I mentioned before would be an enhancement and expansion of administration buildings um including a secured campus entry welcome to Quality and appropriate facilities for teachers and staff and at the community sector piece we've got facility for the community excuse me really liaison that supports their functions and supporting Community Education for the events all of that activities that the community based on each side relationship so these are projects for for your consideration but if we want to move any of these up something else that is where some heart decisions the definition of community um The Welcome Center and Community Center really for school Community are we talking about yes that's right because I was like um is around a place where parents could go into professor so I know you mentioned I think the previous slide about the classrooms and posting more a little early on yours like TJ kinder and then I see the support middle school and equity so it's important Middle School Equity more just around gym and locker rooms and not necessarily classrooms it's what we've heard them most like the biggest thing that it's setting apart what a middle schooler would be compared to once you reach a fifth grader it's now middle schoolers in order to become competitive in sports we went to high school it's what I remember hearing we should be training and learning in facilities like genesis foreign [Music] thank you and I and if I remember correctly maybe you said something like that uh well it's currently a element so my concern number would be the classrooms there because we're not I would pay you money to bring them up whether it's the science lab or I don't know um you know where does where's that are re-identifying that if that is a long-term position for 10 years that is something that we should like to talk about in this position yeah I mean we've placed our here's our staff at defining these things so appreciate that input I mean ideas buildings however yeah he has huge fights that resulted out talking about jeans but if you feel changed so while I appreciate you know visions and everything else I wanted to figure out how it is not too exactly um thank you so I'm assuming that that's how you're breaking up that's your one two three um that's not the case go ahead and even spread out every single year every single election twice you know the general or the primary the general and max out go ahead and get 45 million dollars really happy yeah the reality that we live with our assist evaluation stands up or we go through the capital appreciation funds to take out a billion you got 105 billion dollars um foreign so to finish my point s thank you you can start right yes there are more performance players on the board in our case but I'm sorry yeah you know our facilities modernizations bringing people back right on the other hand um I'm considered the one that really um should be more focused academically what changes are going to help the students who actually learn versus words I think I mean obviously it's five you know otherwise we all have our own priorities and advice um and then just to bring it back to you know I don't know we're gonna do an activity but you know I like what um and that's mentioned about the needs thank you we're gonna help you get yes so to kind of take off on what you're saying about needs it did when you look at the second grouping of that and that's the site-wide in your deferred things so between the immediate needs and the Deferred maintenance those two categories by themselves at today's cost is at about 100 million dollars that's pretty much going to heat up we're not going to do everything in one year there's going to be some escalation costs so those kids those two categories if the board was to decide that we want to do the greatest priorities first that would pretty much eat this bondage and so that's where I think the administration is going to be looking for the board's leadership and guidance to determine um do we want to really allocate all those resources for deferred maintenance items or are we looking to push some of that money towards better classrooms right so that that's the question that ultimately are important that you have to provide some guidance to us as the administration on how best to utilize doing a pushing for exactly we started like pushing forward it's a very very extensions and then all of a sudden you have one daughter's changing that continually hard reading so I don't want to steer yourself up for the situation like that so I hope that to the the accessibility facilities [Music] three years out so you must be done now so that we're not waiting for that to come in immediately yeah remember really I really like what you were saying is taking care of the real surprise people bring to the technology so that's already set aside it's not part of that and it's definitely something that is going to be very attractive once you have this right so I think um in terms of taking care of business take care of with not have you know is it as you know books because that's something that every time it rains that's something that I'm worried right and we should not be having so it's not very sexy but it's very good yes while we're on topic emergency the property taxes everybody else is going to get 33.

teacher Association parents Neighbors I don't believe she's here either superintendent comments Janae Nelson I just want to recognize the three students that are here tonight speaking I know Ismail did not think he was going to have to speak first but you did a great job and we're proud of you and we can't wait to hear you next month um come back with with the next report um Aaron for Aaron no I just did that she has a sister named Aaron that reported to the board for um two years as the ASB line president for Granite Hills High School but Hannah which I circled because I knew I was going to do it served on the superintendent advisory as an elementary student and so she's been around for quite some time doing amazing things in student leadership and we appreciate that you stepped up tonight and took this again we know that you'll back her up anytime she needs it so yeah thank you and I apologize that kills me because I was trying so hard not to call you your sister's name I'm the younger sister so you just have to know it's a bad thing I got it and Sophia thank you for the energy for all the information you talked about some of the things that I had planned on talking about um specifically peers and mock trial um I was a judge for mock trial um for their auditions it's one of the best nights of the year not because I say a whole lot but because I wait for what Mr Schlosser is going to push against the kids on the Amendments and see what the how they respond and whether they break under the pressure because all we are is their audition and when they get back in that courtroom and start training we want them super prepared to compete and it's pretty amazing to watch these kids one of the judges is a past mock trial student who now is a an attorney and comes and supports as one of the coaches so what a great great legacy that that team has created and peers as well is one of those groups that goes out we have them on both campuses we've God training this past week I was able to sit over on the you know get the the startup going and just to see their faces and know that they're there to support um their peers in the time of Crisis or in an event when it's better to have somebody your age sitting across from you than an adult is pretty powerful and they don't know when they walk in that room what they're committing to until the event happens and then they show up and they blow us away every time with what they're able to do to support students within this district and sometimes adults too so I know that um Sophia I don't know are you trying to get back oh no okay okay well we know this is a big night for you guys and we know that homecoming's coming for granted and we know that there's a lot of events getting ready to happen at um High Desert Premiere because of student Voice last year I know they're continuing the work and we will continue student voice um I was able to attend the county um it's called the county update for state of the county thank you two board members were able to attend with me yesterday it's part of our high desert greater High Desert Chamber of Commerce so it's all of the communities in the high desert and the county came and reported all of the statistics and information regarding the high desert and then I also attended the vendor fair over at the Desert Mountain selpa where we had a booth there were vendors there across the valley to support students and offer free medical and ways that we can connect families to assistance here in the high desert and so I was appreciative that we had the ability to participate there link crew at Granite Hills High School is a strong strong activity for students it connects them a wonderful thing and I know that Esports was mentioned but I do know that there is a some work behind the scenes to talk about maybe one of the theaters at the new AMC or the AMC the town has now taken possession of there are some kids that really think it would be a great place to do Esports so we do a competition in this room we do it in the big room here but might be pretty cool to have kids tell them that they want that so we'll see what happens thank you thanks all right board comments Rick sure thank you Mr President so uh every year we have new speakers and I have to say we've had some really good ones over the last few years and this is no exception so I always look forward and you guys are going to be actually by the end of this year because you're going to speak every month you're going to be really really well spoken you guys are now and it's really good to see I know um the hand that you're filling in that you did really good and uh hopefully we'll see you again and Sophia um you're already in natural so I can only imagine but um look forward to that and I want an update next month on when we win Bill Gates still want the update you know I want to have you you know this presentation so good job guys see you next month uh thank you James okay Amanda okay so hard to go first you did excellent um I know you went up that is you probably were not expecting to go first but you did rock it so thank you very much for taking the plunge um and I have to say I saw the photos of iFly online and I was kind of jealous um so I I might have to go check that out I don't know if I actually would actually do it or not but I was jealous I was looking at them I was like that looks kind of fun um it did look fantastic um and Hannah thank you so much for coming and speaking to all of us and I absolutely love your earrings that's right when you were out there I was like are those croissants and then you started talking about all the food and I was like those earrings were perfect for that address yes um and as well Sophia thank you for sharing everything um as an English teacher spine Crushers is a club I could totally get behind I was like you first mentioned it and I was like that doesn't sound like a very good that sounds like a risk management club like and then I was like oh no I could do that um and then I just have to say ball game so I I think a lot of people in the room no I do teach over a baby uhsd and my campus happens to share the parking lot with Victor Valley High School um but I will probably be wearing my sun Devil's t-shirt tomorrow so I got one I got it I got orange I'm ready to go tomorrow I might not have a job on Monday but I will I will be ready for tomorrow I want a picture oh I'm ready I'm ready I got the shoes on right now but I'm ready to go tomorrow um yeah no I I know I'm hoping in the next month they get out around and see some more of uh things going on around the district this month um I do get a chance to go to the Sunsations performance um with Maria and that was fantastic to hear some of the voices um and then as superintendent Nelson mentioned the state of the county breakfast um it was just nice to kind of hear what's going on in the county especially as far as um what's being done with the fentanyl crisis and just like to really protect our kids so definitely glad to see that we're moving in that direction and gonna be keep protecting those kiddos so that is all I've got very good okay Gary I just want to say that congratulations kind of district-wide to all the the schools for a very successful opening of the school year uh went around and visited some of the back to school nights and and they were everyone that I went to was very well organized very well attended uh the parents and the students were extremely and the teachers were extremely enthusiastic in fact Mrs uh rice over at the Vanguard in her seventh grade science class she absolutely had all the parents just captivated with their various science demonstrations and so on I I think some of them wanted to come back and maybe see if they could sneak into class to get some explanations of how some of these things were going boom and Gathering all their attention and so on but just very very successful openings just tremendous back to school nights and it was just great to be on the campuses and then see the parents the students the teachers the administrators classified staff everybody just excited to be back back getting getting to what we'd love to do which which is a minister to kids and help kids so so thank you kind of District life for some very successful back to school nights also at Athletics of course has been meant as our student Representatives mentioned the the Athletics is back and had a chance to visit some of the activities around the district um some of the ones that get a little bit less attention um girls volleyball it was Apple versus granite actually and there was boy there's so much energy in that gym I was I I almost think it might have registered on the Richter Scale there was so much in fact I came out of there and it seemed like my ears were still ringing for a couple of days that the cheers but but the sportsmanship the effort and you know both schools the coaches the players really have a lot to be proud of the same thing with girls tennis apple or I should say Granite versus Oak Hills you know tremendous sportsmanship uh the students and players were playing really hard talked to the coach and coach said you know most of the players were new this year but yet they've already just in a few weeks progressed so far so just just want to say kind of district-wide as academics Athletics and activities that have started again they've started on such a positive note kind of universally all across the the disc District so students teachers administrators classified staff District staff just just a congratulations and a thank you to the entire Apple Valley team because this year has started out just fantastic and I can't wait to see where where we're going to be going this year I know some great things are going to be happening so thank you to everybody involved very good Maria I'm going to start off by thanking the three uh speakers uh you you all elevated um us as Apple Valley School District um people you made us Proud by the way you presented and you were ready um to Showcase what you have um just listening to you I I wish I have a second turn at being a kid again so that I can be in the classrooms and actually enjoy some of these activities at the last board meeting I did a requests to visit schools I have to start out by saying thank you to those principals um that jumped on it and got me into their school I do realize that you're all you all have a busy very busy schedule and you had an activity planned the week that I had requested so you were able to accommodate me and still have your activity with the superintendent on that day but I'm going to start out with the school first school that I went to and that was Sandia school when I arrived there they had a steam assembly um so I sat in the back like I fly on the wall I wish they had left me at the I said fly on the wall so it was very interesting when the kids all turned around to look at me and I thought oh um I just want to be here and enjoy your space um I had the opportunity to um uh see the computer system they have in their classroom that was so fascinating and it is a system that is at the door um and all of the kids who need to excuse themselves had to type in and if the restrooms are take all taken you can't go and I thought that was so cute to to see that I I felt that was a good way to manage student movements and in the event of an emergency we'll know where every kid is so I really appreciated that um then I went on to Vanguard when I arrived at Vanguard I visited so many classrooms I even visited the parent Center the family center and to see the control the the how the parents are managing um what they would like to see on their campus just as parent run and and it was very fascinating uh to see that um and to see there was a teacher who was having um you know I've talked about safe and civil schools a lot and since I went it has now become like my you know my oxygen everywhere I go I'm looking to see how they you know what where are they on the safe and civil program so uh in Vanguard it was very evident it was everywhere you know all the teachers had their Champs thing up I have not been part of chance because I went to the leadership piece so I didn't go to the champ space I'm hoping I'll make it to the Champs at some point but the teachers had it I was so fascinated about it a teacher who had the light system it was a light thing around the the Whiteboard and that light was to tell the kids what the level of their voice should be um and if the light was showing a different color every everybody was supposed to be working quietly if it showed a different another color they could talk to each other I thought that was so fascinating I thought nobody is going to say that they don't know the rules because it's right there in front of them and then I went on to uh Phoenix Phoenix Academy Phoenix was amazing um we went uh the principal Malaysia set it up so that I can go when there are the groups are not at lunch or recess so I had to navigate the program luckily I wore very comfortable shoes so I was able to go back and forth to see where things are but I have to give a shout out to the campus safety officer or campus security who was who gave me a shallow right it was the best shuttle ride I can imagine because first she didn't know who I was because I went back and she had no idea who I was but she had to give me a ride from the upper campus to the lower campus and she had her little cell phone playing music and in the middle of the music she had a bit something about the music that was so good and she hit me and she was like yeah and I thought oh somebody's happy and she says I love I love my job I love my job I thought I can tell um but that was the best experience and I told her that I was going to talk about her today and that was when she really realized who I was because she had no idea where I was going to talk about her I said this I could talk about you a church or somewhere but you know she had no idea who it was so that was a good experience I have had amazing experiences in these different schools and I still have an open calendar that I'm going to submit to Kylie so that I can get started again I do understand there were quite a few principles that have submitted days and have a request I'm ready you know I'm ready but I just want to look at my own schedule then I went to Apple Valley high school thank you Zoe Zoe gave us a calendar of what was happening all around campus around the district so the first trip that I went to was Apple Valley high school and they had tennis and I had no idea that the tennis had sections that belonged to home and away so I arrived and I went to the away people and I sat next to them and but they had the shade so I sat with them and I enjoyed my time and watched the kids playing tennis and I quickly left that to go to volleyball I had no idea that volleyball were three groups of students so I stayed for the JV for the freshmen and for the sophomore by the time I was on I thought I am cooked then I went back to Granite Hills High School I tell you I have never seen school spirit like that I had parents who knew their cheer sounds and the cheer movements and this man that was in front of me was cheering away and doing one of those things and I thought hmm I wish I was sitting across from you so I can videotape you but that particular game was so power packed that at every point I sent a picture of the score to the superintendent because I wanted her to see how our kids were doing I was so excited so Granite Hills High School and the students from Apple Valley High School you did amazing and I I plan to come back I went to the sun stations and they were equally good I recorded them I played it back on my on my page because I was just so proud to have all of those students High Desert Premiere I have been to iFly I can tell you that the first time that I went without with my grandchildren I thought they were going to leave my heart there because you just float and you're begging them please take me down please take me down and you guys had the best experience I can't I can't wait to hear what you have planned uh this year thank you so much for all of what you do and thank you to the staff of Apple Valley School District you have been amazing thank you wow I'm getting tired just thinking of all the places you went I know it's good to be back I feel a lot better having the knee replaced but uh as far as the history of the bell game we win this one to be 11 straight well I want to tell you there's a lot of history there when we first had the bell game it was just Victorville and and at a ghetto formed at half and then we had Hesperia and Apple Valley and Lucerne kids and everybody was there I mean the bell game was really big and when you ride the bus in I'm sure they still have this tradition it just happened natural at with all over with our uniforms on naturally with the helmets and when you go through the Narrows so you see those lights of Raymore all those helmets snap and everybody's locked on they're ready to go now that's uh yeah it was good it's still a good tradition and it happened natural well anyway let's move on the clerk will read out anything that happened in closed session do you want to distance this oh yeah wait a minute you guys need to go home do homework you students will give you a break here you can leave yeah and by the way all three did a good job no no it's a great experience no I keep doing that man hey Ryan they still do that yeah it just happened a couple of kids often 60 helmets going man 50.

Highland I think if you look close enough Scott will tell you can see people enrolling in the background um so our projection there was for 878 students we had 891 this is a building that as you know and been highlighted in some of the summer Works summer work that we had to really modify the school to accommodate the growth that we've seen um you know I think we really would love to try and get through this without adding Portables uh that's starting to look a little bit more difficult this enrollment is in spite of the fact that there's a new building a new construction project off of dickerman soderman way I think it is sort of in drive that we unilaterally moved that neighborhood from Highland before people started to move in to Chapman school so you know as you know there's still plenty of construction and availability in the area so we're we're closely monitoring this as you can imagine it's crazy to think with some of these buildings there are not a lot of years left in these buildings before we we move into new new spaces very exciting so the enrollment here we're up a little bit there as well 421 projected 432 actual with a average of 18.8 Todd the first days of Middle School so about the projection from NASDAQ 640 to 631 a little bit lower treasure High so we're actually up one student at Cheshire high school over the projection at 12 14.

everybody [Music] sometimes [Music] foreign you know you just need to do it keep the roof you know put together and turn the lights on and have the right side no and at the same time when I do you know what we've always been seeing is right so what is the workforce housing the Competitive Edge is you know um right but um how we tease that out so that the community has seen some difference again we're here to be part decisions the process right so how do you message back to oh we're Back to Basics you know we're just trying to like keep us from constantly this could have been you know 20 million dollars less five years together right so here we are um I do think whatever that strategic thing is right and we need something that is a little bit more Equitable right and I think this plan back to the 4 million but the Deferred maintenance didn't feel the Improvement um but what about that foreign at least foreign overall because it might give you 10 that's only two dogs [Laughter] 22 times some signals like well maybe it's there's still category but only perhaps of that scope like these are basically your design two budgets so say I want to post a round number Performing Arts in the 20 million let's just dedicate District white and doing it too bad so now we're influencing these projects budget of 10 million which means maybe we're not getting every school maybe that was about example but we're you know in the construction at 50 of the so we're all week so now are designed to budget for campus is foreign but those are the decisions those are those directions that we are that we need from you so that we can again so I I would like to know exactly what it was 16 States and security and there's fire alarms intrusion alarms number two so so I'm I'm struggling to to answer is Enterprise activity here basically your you did this is independent our our priorities wishes thicker on where we we like to spend you know which is limited funds yes so this isn't about fixing projects this is yeah so I wanted that to make it clear yes this isn't like you know injections so the thing is is that we're kind of making a decision on not knowing all the factors if we have sadness because it is so without knowing that machine but Christy Chavez is talking about in my mind so utilities if it's Plumbing issues which is something that we do a lot from the sites Bureau Veritas wasn't doing exploratory investigation like giving up to you know speaking the clothing lines but we did work with the facilities to teach I didn't find which sites leading to carrying costs and we're not in um so I think an approach to address your concerns would be two for us to get the number from the skilled category of two from the FCA reports about three years or five years whatever y'all feel comfortable with get that number to prioritize um to be maintained while other or whatever else is being prioritized is in order to happen and perhaps a push yourself yeah I was just about to say I did the priority number one right here yeah that's those four million dollars so you can have other things this kind of thing done okay thank you lady no no no but I did thank you foreign family thank you somebody just count them already I'll find it no I don't know I just saw it up um [Music] thank you all right are you sure or something it is okay and pulling out the facility condition assessments to see if I can get that District by the number for three years of prepared compared to five years of repair and we'll see um thank you okay well thank you okay try to make connections to change that change things but we one to two year repairs replacement needs in another 15.5 million you go years one two years 15.80 and additional three to five years a little extra 35.9 is one and two minutes give me like examples of how that's different yeah so instead of utilities that covers things that are underground that you're very constantly I just couldn't look at it so what means your electrical capacity Do you have a have a group of the concepts later um the area the acreage per site and the working administrants facilities but they know what we modernize or heavily reading videos were also triggered in this estimate if we're eating a lot of new construction Underground I don't know because I know what the dealership properties they no longer um those to the one whose subleasing and it's not right and um foreign okay because like for example something happens and we both have like um little markers so we know if it's on our side or if they have to pay for you because in the long run because they don't have extra cost especially since the words [Music] you know certainly this district is expensive reviews the suitability of our buildings foreign yesterday certain costs there yes um as a generalized [Music] and there's no expectation as long as the schools are budge that implements or requires any kind of coded with today's standard unless there are certain trigger points and some of those trigger points or additions but the nature a lot of medications that that could involve structural to that at that point the department of the division will see artifact will require bringing certain other systems of today's code for example a fire alarm animal system right we're going to be doing some large scale improvements out of school most likely DSA would Implement a number of codes requirements to the fire system as well as Ada and other improvements but if you're not doing anything to the schools that triggers that in the existing building condition is sufficient that's different General thing against the time president well well it's the divisions of State architecture for school right there's there's the body or the agency that will will dedicate to the what triggers uh will be necessarily need to be implemented as part of say building this or an abdulance where footage or building a new uh multi-purpose room or a new gymnasium they will tell the architect you will or you must include updating for example a fireworks or a Aba complaint pathway please um counties and cities have different jurisdictions that schools don't fall under you know in our case here we're under the state and not so instance you know fire code does have involvement with the city but overall it's the division of State Park effects that that determines what we're going to have to do as part of our plan I don't know the exact number 350 square foot to a building then you have to significantly pressure physical buildings right um because GSA uses uh um so those would be mandatory practices of accessibility code anytime you touch the campus quickly that includes play structures it includes shade structures uh you have to make sure you have a senseful clients accessible apartments and things like that so it differs a little bit in terms of the scope that you're doing if it's just replacing like you know maybe feelings with carpet you might not get to the 350 threshold and you could keep the using instructional system but it really is yeah over with all the films that were would be helped you on some of our outdoor inclusions about a 20 of the cost of the project being allocated for an aviator wow them well I think they incorporate that as part of the overall cost right they're in line The Architects are in the engineers are in line with the codes and all the girls codes and so they they they're well aware of what the specials are what what needs to be bad so these numbers these numbers are a design if you don't know all the ins and outs exactly what how a specific project would be different these are designed to budget so we it has it is informed as much as we can get it informed throughout the access community members of the conservatives she typed into the box but at the end of the day um address things like Utilities District Five Urban investing funds thank you well this is actual versus 12 minutes yeah okay thank you I wanted to go back to conferences just foreign just go back to understand it correctly your response Does it include the boom ers ET thank you people go into some of this getting some instruction or shift or yeah there's a district-wide so it includes yes it will need some of your thoughts so yeah I kind of ran some numbers okay means million uh 765 000 remaining uh category that was just that amount that it's a math gameplay um but Titanic um and that money for a new buyers might realize it's the same opportunities [Music] yeah but in order to put up some of that stuff is typically what I've experienced at some of my other employers um that is part of this project scope and they'll do conductive analysis and where that impact is scheme is on the power purchase area of it where we negotiate a kilowatt hour uh cost right so if they're having to implement a lot of upgrades oh gosh they're going to say okay you're going to pay 12 cents a kilowatt hour as opposed to 10 cents they're going to stay over a 20-year period so I've scanned of the solar system uh they want to get their costs back right from that investing they're they're not in it to lose money [Music] solar system then that's offsets the utility bill a lot but now it takes away dollars from other infrastructure or priorities that that would be outlined in installed range utilities plan so it's all in where you want to place your dollars and how do you want to utilize it was called the solar you get some net return right and like Workforce how we're going to get some net return from the bread right for making that investment solar could be looked at that way if you don't want to put Capital dollars into it if you allow another company that's willing to do it that's in that business of installing solar and creating power purchase agreements that's where they're going to read through part of their money is specifying that Talent committing within the next 20 years at a specific rate they've got it all worked out to where they get their profit over in 20 year period but we benefit in perhaps a lower pte Bill utility bill that we're currently exactly right foreign can you just talk a little bit about how much potential dollars yeah foreign so um you know for example to give that person is going to be and I'm making this up because I'm in for the workers it's going to be Hospital figure out whether the best place facilities thank you right the one that we got and things for the next one the current regarding them from in France so that's just true so we already know that the state is going to find the Community Schools for community school because our schools are so common it's not very big it's funded by a number of kids so every school gives something like that so we just stop posting hitting don't break here yeah is going to help us outfit whatever it is [Music] thank you when you open it would take all this feedback and we can um come up with another sexual implementation scenario um it doesn't sound like we're hard sick today on what that would look like so I think to develop what that looks like because you know this feedback that it's not you know just so getting a side levels you know the things the important opportunity it's my slide actually it's from um it's October 12th and that's where we're thank you share with you with the most implementation scenario um right it's that information [Music] because but illustrations foreign is important we've been seeing the school start tomorrow [Music] when you come back with the different scenariosities thank you and just that also that means about what time I will please next Thursday foreign [Music] so why
