but they get on the bus at 3 25. we missing school time so yes sir Dr P could come up here for a little bit and just talk about how that mechanically Works um [Music] yeah so just given the number of students that we have to move in transportation just with all the buses uh Crown pickup so the dismissal starts a little bit early uh it was if you remember back in kova times when we had similar problems we started the dismissal process a little early as well I will say teachers have been very creative and they've uh in fifth grade for example they have kind of uh not redistributed but we did some creative scheduling where they do the math science and literacy during the course of the day and they incorporate some of the social studies standards within literacy and they all teach social studies at the end of the day so it's that 10 minutes is technically taken but not in the overall big picture and Dr P typically at Huckleberry and at Center School dismissal started before the technical end of the school day correct that's my understanding because remember contractually the teachers are done at 3 35.

gotcha so we have to if we my teachers left at 3 35 and I started bus dismissal I would be left with just me and 1100 kids so I can't do that and our teachers have been great about volunteering their time yeah teachers have been fantastic about amazing helping yeah so that's it Mike so how would you like to get how would you like to get input you want us to uh when do you want to bring this back and then when do you need input for almost um probably if if in the next week before next Friday the board members could email me individually Lisa and me individually we'd love to get your feedback on it and then if there's any adjustments we can make based on that you know there's some oversights or some ideas we'll talk to the committee about it and then I could bring we could bring back a Incorporated draft okay draft two I guess for the October 18th meeting we haven't heard that from anybody wow there's because now the next year it's the 20th that's the 20th I'm surprised we fight for that I know Mrs Burrell puts on a big Easter spread and always wishes she had the Monday off but um but that if that's feedback we'll certainly take it [Music] would happy to okay or if you're not ready to the November meeting exactly it's nice you can look at how long that agenda is but I can tell you I did get back to that uh individual who emailed me and let them know you could start planning your vacation even though the board hasn't approved it gave them the process it looks like we'll be starting after Labor Day they were very relieved let's tell you the truth so it's very happy I'm glad someone's planning a vacation all right thank you again taking the rest of his life off there's no old business uh we did public comment at the beginning next is the three main points that do you have any thoughts on I have lots of thoughts um yeah we did a lot of different stuff um I'd like to highlight some of the opening of school updates from all three schools try to combine it into one big update um I thought the Desa update was important and then I thought I would combine um I don't know how but combine Athletics and technology updates that's the third one [Music] no we don't have to we don't have to cram it like in order to get everything it's sort of like supposed to be sorry supposed to be sort of like I guess the three that we want to highlight right so in that sense I would kind of lean more towards Athletics and all the awards yeah um yeah were you gonna say I was I was gonna say it was a long meeting we had one this month and the board could call it the four main points for this month to three main points we can also give yourself a little flexibility here so if you think it's that important right yeah I like Rosa's idea though of highlighting Athletics is the third one and maybe not so much Tech and why don't I just suggest we just do a separate post on the graduation date that could just be a little blur post that your District puts out there well because I feel like the 3 three main points really affects every grade level right and I'm sure Mr Blanda will be putting a note out quite quickly about the graduation day because I know he's got a lot of he's receiving quite a bit of email as well as to when the graduation date is so just to recap well the school opening then Athletics yeah everyone okay with that yeah all right Tom sounds good and upcoming events all schools are closed this coming Monday September 25th for Yom Kippur and Monday October 9th for professional development cles has picture day on October 17th whiskaneer has open house coming up grade six is tomorrow night grade 7 is Wednesday September 27th and grade 8 is Thursday September 28th I believe those are all 6 p.m Mr Renda uh 6 6 30 6 30 in the cafeteria and whiskey near also has picture day Thursday September 28th and the walkathon Thursday October 19th and Brookfield High School has the Lake Compounce trip for seniors on October 6th and they have a spirit week coming up October 16th to 20th with the homecoming game on Friday October 20th and the homecoming dance at the Amber Room on Saturday October 21st that's all I have [Music] okay thank you all right so without objection we are adjourned thank you all for staying with us thank you everyone thank you everyone [Music] thank you

wasn't here yet also I am here obviously calling in from Ann Arbor foreign so we can move on here to 0.4 approval of the agenda is there a motion to approve the agenda as presented so moved so we first have to move it and and second it and then we can propose to amend it we've gone through this a couple times so thank you uh Jeff do we have a second okay second by rosanita um so now the agenda is open to either be approved as it currently stands or to be amended so if you want to amend it you can just say I move to amend the agenda to add this item or for example um I moved to amend the agenda to add um three items the green Fair um planning for the next agenda of the runners commission and um the rent control ban in the Michigan State Legislature right so green Fair um let's would you be all right if we did Green Fair rent control ban and then uh agenda discussion at the end [Music] okay so that's um all that is moved by julium um do we have a second for that oh second second by rosanita thank you all right so all those in favor of amending the agenda to add those three points say I I all those opposed say name you know what actually I'm just not realizing uh Kristen do we have a quorum I think we do right six right um yeah yep that's fine okay I'm sorry um I'm gonna double check hang on okay yeah I just want to check before we go into this meeting and make sure that uh we do have in fact have a Quantum avoiding members believe it says if we don't have a quorum we can still talk about stuff yes yes so we have 10 um appointed members and coral behalf plus one so six great okay awesome we just met it thank you Chris I just want to make sure all right so uh we amended the agenda adding those three points so just one more time um that was a discussion of the green Fair discussion of the proposed rent control ban in the state legislature or rather the repeal of that ban and finally a discussion of our next meetings agenda so now that we have the amended agenda in front of us uh we have to uh vote on whether or not we uh accept this amended agenda so all those in favor of first of all are there any other Mo any other motions on this agenda before we go forward no okay so all those in favor of um approving the agenda before us say aye hi always supposed to say okay great so this agenda is the amended agenda is approved wonderful so that moves us on to the next item number five the approval of our last meetings minutes which was on July 20th I believe uh 2020 three and uh so is there a motion to approve the last meetings minutes one correction I would I was listed thank you I move to accept the minutes with the correction of Gail's attendance second okay so uh yeah all those in favor of amending the minutes uh as was stated just then um say I okay all those opposed and a great so we're just gonna mend those um I suppose do we have to take another vote on whether we accept the minutes okay great now we could just do a correction that's fine okay thank you so we have just uh approved last minute minutes thank you Gail for checking those okay so that brings us to item number six the first general public comments so Kristen whenever you're ready public comment can be made by phone by calling 877-853-5247-488-788-0099 and entering the meeting ID 935-8080-1941 it's an opportunity for members of the public to address the renters commission and if you are joining from the web link you can use the raise hand feature there are no callers or attendees I think we can close public comments thank you we can move on to item number seven um our business so uh we can begin with 7-a kind of education committee discussion so someone from the tenant education committee can you please give us um a summary of what we discussed yeah I can do that so we uh August 24th and we had a pretty in-depth discussion about rights and duties and booklets um we kind of went over just a reminder of which sections um City staff has the ability to edit in which sections need to go through the city Charter um we were kind of talking um hoping to somehow be notified within the process when City staff does make a change um to the handbooklets and Kristen had said that we could um be notified in part of that process um we did talk about fines how they have not issued any fines um for landlords not providing the booklets as the ordinance says that they're supposed to um we we talked about the green Fair we did some planning um we also talked about the um housing code we kind of touched back on the discussion that we initially had with um can't remember the name of their department now um but the group of folks um from the city that does the inspections in that process and handles complaints um and I guess to sum it up we were really interested to kind of reopen that discussion with them I know from our last meeting they had been really awesome and you know seems like they really wanted to collaborate with us and um we were hoping to kind of just um touch base with them again to see um like in what areas we could maybe I don't know look for opportunities to partner with them as appropriate I guess to say it summarized um and I think Kristen was going to work on that um once the new season of everyone moving in slowed down a little bit and that was about every everything I don't know if I missed something from the meeting if anyone else wants to add or if anyone has questions I I think uh two of the items um that you touched on or things we might want to discuss as a whole and one of them what you were just talking about it was like with the housing inspectors and it clearly seems like they're understaffed um and I think it's in our um realm of consideration to see if there's ways to look at funding and so one idea we talked about is trying to figure out like what the uh cost of having the certificate of compliance of occupancy is um and how much that's been raised over the years [Music] um and talking about how many fines are collected in comparison of what how many fines were collected in the past and whether that has to do with better compliance or whether that has to do with just not really collecting fines anymore so maybe before I go to the next point and I don't know if we want to talk about this or if we want to push this as a specific agenda item for next time um Zachariah the the fine issue specifically um as part of the greater issue of enough funding for enough inspectors oh there I go okay that was abstract stuff there for a moment on your on your camera um I think these are very good points um I think I mean just a question to you Julia how do you think we should start that conversation do you think we should go to rental Housing Services and ask them how they feel about their funding um sure I think it's also okay for us to look at the past I don't know if that's an easy thing to pull up you know like in 1987 they collected you know x amount of fines and today they you know collect X and is if that gives us any kind of information John yeah so I had a question were the fines associated with tickets or some sort of administrative fine if you know what what was the basis for the um imposition of a fine was that inquired into because I'm looking at section chapter 105 which is our housing code section 8 colon 525 information concerning Kenneth's rights where landlords are mandated to provide those so are we talking about landlords who haven't gotten the booklets to the tenants and there was a complaint and then there was a ticket and then there was an adjudication and then a finding find cost is that kind of how those work if you know Julia um no we weren't specifically talking about the booklet we were talking about housing inspections in general okay non-compliance with the housing code those things generated for non-compliance so not specific to the booklet but the General Rental inspection all right thank you do you have stats just on total amounts collected or do you have stats on total infractions or total counts issued or issued per so it's a lack of CFC or failure to make there's all different because I deal with those tickets in court so I'm just wondering what data you had uh is info the rentals commission is interested in getting kind of a discussion about the best way to get it I talked with Sarah a little bit um Sarah does the foyers and like it's not super easily accessible it definitely exists but it will take a little bit to get to it um so if you have some specific questions I think it'd be easier to request kind of specific numbers um instead of kind of like broad budget or if there's other like specific budget questions that you have another thing you could do about is yes that you could ask the district court administrator for like hey uh what what violations code violations on civil attractions for eight five eleven which is inspection related or um lack of CFC or improper registration uh which is 8517 so there are different code Provisions under which an infraction is issued in the um the district court presumably would have that I'd want to know how many rather than total amount of fines and costs which may or may not be helpful I'd want to know how many infractions and for what offenses they're seeing that might be helpful data too over time and how many inspectors now like relative to first okay oh I mean Kristen um do you did you receive a response from staff about the booklets is that something that they can keep us up to date on or um definitely um if the clerk's office is aware of it which we would very likely be aware of it um unless there's some reason um like a specific reason not to I don't think it would be an issue okay thank you maybe like if there was like legal advice or something then we would follow that so then can this go to an agenda item for um next month the report on if we're and I guess that's Eucharist and Gathering any stats yeah I will see what I can find um and then I'll do an update book like before the meeting um to both you and Zechariah and see um if it is worth having on the agenda the next meeting is the 19th should be able to get um more information then the other thing I wanted to add from the um education the tenant Ed committee um is um kind of the whole issue of the um white section of the tenant rights booklet and at that meeting there didn't seem to be a lot of interest in doing a rewrite and I think it's come up a couple of times in emails and at meetings um and I don't know whether people want to talk about that again or whether we're just putting to bed the issue of rewriting the white section so that sounds like oh there we go yeah yeah I was just gonna chime in and say I think for me I don't see it as a big priority at least right now but that's just my opinion so I don't know if anybody else feels strongly about when writing it so my recommendation would be that we put it to bed until like next spring and see if we want to think about it maybe during the course of the winter things will pop up and we'll realize oh we should do that but right now it doesn't seem like it's worth talking about anymore um and then part of the work plan um is the education piece and a chunk of it was educating ourselves um which I think we've done a pretty good job on having the Human Rights Commission come and talk and having the housing inspectors Come and Talk um and I'm kind of wondering if there's any interest in doing any sessions um specific on the white section on Ann Arbor's existing laws for tenants um I mean there isn't a lot uh of law in general but you know like if we wanted to do something like have a session going over what the state law is on eviction and how it plays out in local courts or you know things like that how the security you know maybe one meeting just have something on how the security deposit Works in Ann Arbor um so that was one I other idea that came up from the committee and and I just wanted to mention it to see if anybody in the larger commission was interested in that hey Jimmy yeah um I would definitely be interested in that I think another thing kind of related to that that I would be interested in is um like not just the law like leading up to eviction but and I don't maybe this would be um a little off topic but I would be kind of interested in like the eviction process like from a tenant's perspective I think that would be um helpful for me to understand yeah Jeff um yeah um you mentioned something that um just kind of clicked in my head and that was um regarding security deposits um and just it just kind of dawned on me that you know some places have you know really really high security deposits sometimes up to you know a full month or more of rent um I wouldn't mind knowing a little bit more about how that might affect people's ability to get housing as well um that one might actually take you know getting somebody from one of the social service agencies to come in and talk a little bit about it because it is huge to pay you know a lot of places are a month and a half which is the maximum under state law paying the month and a half and security deposit plus paying first month's rent and plus paying who knows what kind of application fees and all the other stuff that seems to be um bubbling up around now yeah John I saw your hand up yup Julia mentioned it you don't need me here she's got MCL 554.602 at the tip of her uh tongue uh security deposit shall be required to maintain an accordance and shall not exceed one and a half months rent so um yeah the the state law state law addresses um how much a landlord can charge a tenant for a security deposit so we'd be preempted from laying in on that much like we are currently for our rent control um so trying to keep us on thank you John and thank you everyone for coming in here um I think we should try to keep on track here about you know I think Julie if I understand you correctly you're you want to well I've heard a couple different ideas I mean from Jamie you seem to be interested in getting more education about the eviction process is that right so would that be to the general group here the commission as a whole of a like a speaker for example yeah I think that makes sense okay and Julia can you can you uh remind us Larry to explain what's you're interested in having happen um I kind of just wanted to see how other people felt about it I you know I worked in tenants issues so I which I'm probably the only one of the voting Commissioners you know um so I know a little bit more of the law than other people so I just I'm guessing and so that I I didn't want to make that assumption so I wanted to see if other people felt comfortable with their knowledge or felt that they'd like some more information around that oh um what was it I'm not as versed in the state law here so I wouldn't mind that um especially when it comes to the security deposits not the how much it is per se but getting it back um which is a I think a tenant issue for for some is when you move out I've heard some really like horrible stories of tenants unable to get any of their security deposit back even when they did have some proof that the you know the apartment looks the exact same way as it did when they moved in so I think some clarification on that would be good yeah I agree resonates I think my roommate is unfortunately dealing with that where he still hasn't received the security deposit and it's been over a month um so I know that there was a training about eviction that was put on by the Washington housing Alliance and I think that was in um collaboration with uh legal services of South Central Michigan I can email the link out to the recording because it was recorded and it was posted online uh but I think it would be nice to explore um options for inviting a guests to do a rundown on some of these really important topics for the commission um so do we have specific ideas of which groups we could invite sure and and I think it's fine if now that we know there's interest and at least a couple of things we could discuss this more at the education committee and line up speakers there I think that's a great idea thank you Julia okay so moving along here are there any questions or comments about the tenant education committee okay we can move on to 7-b which is the green Fair now we have a booth at the green Fair uh it sounds like there's uh at least three of the Commissioners who are willing and and available to attend I think so what I know is first of all thank you Kristen for contacting OSI and making sure that we got a booth we appreciate that um some things that I I know I'd be interested in having at the booth are are the city booklets I also have the tenant booklets from the state government which I think are pretty good um that which I can bring I was thinking about printing out a QR code to stick on a table which would bring people to osi's tenant resources page which talks a lot about weatherization um this and I think that the last thing is that there's uh like a large kind of uh easel sort of thing with like a paper and last time we had like sticky notes that people could put ideas on and post on on the board Jamie do you have that okay yes I do across sticky notes and pens as well fantastic so what time does it start tomorrow Jeff oh five okay I'm sorry yeah it looks at a hammer yeah it's five to eight I believe five to eight I think that's correct yeah thank you okay so we have Jamie myself and who else I can't remember Julia yeah and we have a great location um so if anybody and it's supposed to be a nice night if people are just want to come downtown you should definitely walk by even if you can't sit with us wonderful any other you know glaringly obvious things that we don't have that we haven't discussed here that should be at the table I just wanted to say I'll be popping by too and staying for a little while so I know I wasn't the first step on the list but um that was because a new job made I wasn't sure how things were going to be for the next couple weeks but I'll be out there for a little bit awesome hi um I will stop by as well I don't know if my video is working but um yeah I'll make sure I stop by tomorrow to finally meet everybody in person at least yeah I'm really looking forward to it it's supposed to be pretty warm so dress accordingly and um can't wait to see a lot of you out there tomorrow okay well just send send an email I suppose if there's something you think of it's really obvious that we should have at the table and I'll see if I can do it last minute but I'm really excited for tomorrow last year we didn't have a ton of stuff at our table but it still went great and I think it'll go right this time as well we move on to 7-c the discussion of the repeal of the state level rent control ban uh Julia do you want to give background on this since you proposed it sure um so in the late 80s Ann Arbor had a uh you know a voter referendum on rent control um which lost at the same time Detroit ran one that won and before Detroit's could go into effect the state legislature passed the law saying no local government could have rent control um I personally believe in local control and believe in small government and am not a fan of laws passed by the state on what municipalities can do um and whether or not rent control is the right fit for Ann Arbor I I don't feel as the issue at the moment because it's not even possible at the moment um but throughout all of history there has not been enough housing in Ann Arbor and it seems like and people have been working on it forever so it seems like we need every kind of tool in the toolkit and we're better off if we don't have Lansing taking some of those tools away um so I would like to see us uh pass some you know motion to encourage the city council to pass a resolution which then would be forwarded to the legislature just basically saying um we'd like to have the band lifted uh we feel that Ann Arbor should be able to decide for itself whether or not rent control is the right fit I I like I could talk forever about it but I'm assuming that's probably all you want to hear um if somebody has a question about like any part of it um feel free this is a comment um I just so you know I obviously we're here to to advise city council not the state government however if you know we're all interested in housing issues and I think that we should make our voices heard at least as individuals and talk with our state representatives and I think that by and large our local state representatives and state senators are supportive of repealing the the ban not necessarily of implementing some kind of some form of local rent control um my personal feelings about rent control is that it's you know it's a price control it's not intended to expand the supply of housing of course if anything some people there is a group of economists quite a few economists who think that long term certain rent control policies can decrease the housing Supply I've seen other people try to refute that but basically it's really aimed at affordability and obviously we're dealing with an affordability crisis right now in the city so I am happy that the conversation is taking up you know it's really getting started here and so there was a coalition that met in Lansing um beginning of September to demand a few different things but one of their main demands was the repeal of the Statewide ban on rent control so that cities like Ann Arbor could at least start the conversation and seriously consider implementing some form of of uh rent stabilization ordinance and at the end of the day I have to say that I feel is when I talk to tenants and they say well you know my landlord increased the rent by 30 from year to year isn't there something that you know you guys can do to help and I I there's really not in most cases uh currently and I I think that's really ridiculous I think that most countries have some kind of um some kind of way to curb that sort of increase we don't we can't even discuss it right now so you know I'm really supportive of it I I think uh Julia I appreciate that you brought this up and one thing that I've seen is that some cities have been passing resolutions uh saying we as a city really support this repeal and we want our state legislature to consider that when they consider this bill um Ann Arbor hasn't done that however what they did do is they instructed their lobbyists to go to Lansing and try to support that policy of repealing the ban on local rent control rosanita well I said uh I personally believe in rent control to a certain extent um based on on research and what it means for tenants but just prefacing that like you said like when the rent can go up 30 or if it can go up fifty percent or a hundred percent then that becomes a huge problem but um having just thinking about City Council having a lobbyists talk about it is kind of different because I mean the lobbying firm itself has varying interests as opposed to a letter directly from or a resolution or whatever directly from the the city sure our lawmakers are for it but sometimes I think it helps with relationships between city council and some of the city residents knowing that the council is behind it and not send just sending a lobbyist to like I said the firm holds various interests because they're not just employed by our city council it's hard to read the room on Zoom so I'm not like if if people are generally in support of it um I do have the language for emotion um if people have some concerns they want to discuss now or if they want to think about it later we could vote on it at the next meeting too and I have a question Julia do you mean would this be emotion suggestion to city council that they do something that they release a statement or something like that yeah what what I had in mind was just that the Ann Arbor's render commission requests Ann Arbor city council to pass a resolution supporting the removal of the state's ban on rent control which is act 226 of 1988.

good evening I've always wanted to do that I'd like to call this meeting to order do I have my dinner there you go I'd like to call the meeting to order regular board meeting September 21st 2023 uh first order of business is our Pledge of Allegiance Mr Kelly good evening my name is Liam Vermillion will you please stand and join me saying the pleasant the Pledge of Allegiance a pledge of allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands one nation under God indivisible with liberty and justice for all foreign okay um next up is the adoption of the agenda do I have a motion Mr Madam president I move that we approved the consent agenda as presented okay do I have a second actually I believe it's the agenda the whole genome a second okay thank you Mr Russell and Mr Daniels um all in favor all right um next up do I need to say that again yeah passes four to zero yes yeah okay thank you learning uh next up is The Shining Star Wars uh thank you Mrs Council this evening we would like to ask a Valerie Miller to come up to the podium she's going to share with you um a really exciting story uh about one of our employees and and some of the great things that have happened so Valerie if you would yeah on August 24th the student was choking on a piece of a corn dog during lunch in that moment Wendy Patton recognized that the next necessary step was performing the Heimlich maneuver after acting swiftly Wendy was successful in removing the corn dog this act of Bravery is why we believe she deserves to be a Center Grove Corporation shining star we are truly lucky to have her on our food service team thank you so much Wendy [Applause] okay have you know that your name will now be on the clock out there well done thanks giving Spotlight okay uh next would be the CG Spotlight and we have Pleasant Grove Elementary Mr Mr Kelly [Music] first of all I'd like to say thank you for giving us this opportunity uh Wendy amazing job just amazing um we're fortunate enough with that we have the opportunity to share with you three shining stars from Pleasant Grove uh first up I'd like to invite Liam Vermillion who let us in the Pledge of Allegiance Lima if you could come up here and just stand and stare at everybody in the audience and feel uncomfortable just like that awesome uh here here's what makes Liam exceptional I'm recognizing Liam for his kind heart positive student leadership at Pleasant Grove and is a willingness to go above and beyond for others Liam is an excellent student with tremendous work ethic a Next Level athlete who will turn your head when he gets to high school but most importantly he's a kind young man who makes sure others feel included especially our students with disabilities and the short story is is that he makes he goes out of his way to include everyone at recess even out in the community he's just an amazing individual at the beginning of this school year Liam was around and I asked him to help me bring in the kindergarten students on the first day he didn't hesitate that meant a lot to me because a kid's first day of school is so important they were nervous on the about their first day to find their classroom and he provided a positive first impression Liam Vermillion [Applause] and next I would like to bring up Stacy raftery Stacy is a second grade teacher at Pleasant Grove she's taught for 17 years in the Center Grove School Corporation both at Pleasant Grove and Maple Grove and what what makes Stacy exceptional and here's what I wrote Stacy is an exceptional teacher who works extremely hard at her trade she exemplifies the term lifelong learner she as she's always evolving her skills and continually seeks opportunity to learn new methods and instructional strategies when I think of the word zeal I think of Stacy's commitment to the teaching profession because she is Relentless in her pursuit of advancing her skills each and every year Stacy raftery [Applause] and next I'd like to bring up Kathy friedenstein I should have put on here Kathy does not like the extra attention but I love it she is so deserving Kathy is a special education assistant she's done it for a while she's been at Pleasant Grove for quite at some time we I have 25 years and she is the heartbeat of the school she's the Pleasant Grove version of The Swiss army knife she is a special education assistant but means so much more to our school Kathy is accountable Dependable responsible and simply put great at her job she has been a constant through the years of change and can always be counted on Pleasant Grove is blessed to have her on her team and an example was today we had our Fun Run and we had a little girl who we found out quickly she does not like mascots and uh you know you I could see Kathy over there just you know taking her in giving her Comfort holding her hand and then and then they were able to enjoy the fun run so thank you Kathy for all you do you are a blessing to our school [Applause] hmm all right so next is public comments and there are no public comments tonight so we will go into kins the consent items um is there any discussion on the consent items Madam president I move that we approved the consent agenda great you've been dying to do that okay thank you Mr Russell Mr Robinson um all in favor aye aye any opposed that passes 4-0 we might want to mention too this evening Mr Alexander couldn't join us today so he has a personal matter that he had to take care of great so next we're on to 7.1 approved school and approved School Improvement plans Dr arkanoff thank you Mrs count this evening I'm recommending that the board approved the school Improvement plans and Dr Hoover will provide you with some additional information for me oh yeah thank you um before we dive into the to the actual plans I just want to share a few slides here because there's a lot that goes into the process in each building and even though these three plans or our plans are really three-year um processes they have to review them and update data and make adjustments each year to those those three-year goals and so we're in one of those three year Cycles but I think it's really important to know all that goes in behind the scenes that the the building levels are doing and at the end of the day it is about goals but we also know when we're striving very hard to think goals work when we have systems because systems are what continue Improvement and make them not a fluke or a flash in the pan but continue so we can keep progressing so we're working really hard at the system so that when we get to the place we want to be and we arrive we can sustain it so um just as a reminder um in our district we are a professional learning community and we we're all involved in working collaboratively with the people who do two life jobs with us and that's the foundation of that first we call them our gears these are the three areas we're constantly working on and that's how we do the work as a PLC but it's also to create safe supportive and collaborative environments not only for students to learn in but for everyone to work in and so that that culture that we all live and work in is really important the second is effective teaching and we need that in every classroom and that's how we do how we teach um so that we're using best practices and always growing and improving and then the last one is to have a guaranteed viable curriculum enough to what we teach so that that learning experience and what kid their learning targets are are the same no matter what classroom and what building a student is sitting in and especially with the district with this multiple schools that is very important to have those learning targets the same across the district and with that system what we're really striving for is to have an exceptional educational experience for every student and what you'll see there in the box that we're aiming at that is how our principles and teaching learning Department have um kind of Quantified or talk about what does it mean to have an exceptional experience it's not winning just trophies or Awards it's really about um the environment we want kids to be in we want them to be safe respected and cared for every day at school I'm challenged and engaged growing and thriving and celebrating and prepared our big verbs we're looking for so that E3 is something every kid gets just by coming to Center growth and then the last one and I say this a lot because it's so important that we have to truly believe we do better work together than we can ever do by ourselves and it takes longer because getting out people to agree or getting everyone on board takes takes time and effort and we have to let some things go but at the end of the day it's it's better for kids and it's better for us as um staff members because our ideas and our plans are better so those are the big ideas that go behind all of the schools creating their their school Improvement plans even though they're working back in their buildings we're still all focused on the same work as the district um so with that she's going to pull up a summary page while I explain a few things about the action item I'm app we're asking you to approve per Indiana code all public schools must annually submit a school Improvement plan also per the State Board of Education rule plans will be submitted after being approved by the governing body the applicable standard requires the e-school submit their full revised three-year School Improvement plan on a yearly basis and all of our schools must submit that plan no later than October 6th the Indiana school Improvement plan is part of a process for continual School Improvement to be effective the plan should be reviewed be viewed as a living document evolving as circumstances change during a three-year period covered by each plant which is why I also ask you to look at the give you the action plan so you can see how we're altering and improving East Center Grove School is reviewed and considered its assessment data and revised their plan to reflect the building needs the student achievement goal for each building is the basis for their strategies and professional development throughout the year which is delineated in the this their school Improvement plan our elementary schools are focused on reading as our previously previous school had been on math and we really made a lot of gains in our math as I shared at the August board meeting when we talked about student performance data our elementary schools are in a multi-year plan to improve reading Acquisitions and comprehension the addition of an explicit system or systemic phonics instruction called you fly the University of Florida literacy initiative is a district-wide strategy this year we're excited to see the impact of this instruction along with the continual Improvement in implementing our comprehensive reading framework so the you fly is the one of the science of reading components that go into that larger reading acquisition our secondary schools have goals that include Improvement in language and math portions of their state assessments um as a reminder we are in the renewal of the process the plans for approval tonight include benchmarks performance data strategies outcomes research and professional development plans the school Improvement plans and revisions are aimed at continuing improving our student learning and our student growth on the summary of all the school schools and benchmarks are provided and as are the action plans that you can see um I do want to put a plug-in I couldn't before the action item was in I couldn't share this because it came out Friday all of our schools um met Federal standards on our report card so we're doing good stuff just trying to get better every year I asked if the board to prove all nine schools updated School Improvement plans for 23 24.

Surgeon General General released a public health advisory warning for children and using social media and some ill effects and so it is looking to address that as a group and see if there are things that we can get to support our kids who've had harmful effects this is the increase in discipline um bullying um low self-esteem behavioral disregulation things of that nature so if the board is interested in um pursuing that possible litigation it would be with the same company that we worked with with juwel and I could bring a resolution back for you to look at if you wanted to consider joining along with some other districts on that we want to have any further questions on that no cost to us of recover there is no cost is only if um there are damages awarded then there would be cost I was going to start off by discussing our Athletics at our school and a couple other topics um so our teams are off to a great start all of our varsity teams were undefeated and during this week unfortunately at the beginning of this week we have had a couple of losses um and some other information about our school our girls volleyball coach head volleyball Coach Sue bavone is approaching her 600th win she's around 590 currently our head football coach Don drust was named the New York Jets High School football coach of the week and he will be honored on December 10th at the Jets versus uh the New York Jets versus the Texas they're the Houston Texans on December 10th um on October 7th our band will be participating in Music in Motion at the high school with many other bands around town it's an amazing event I've been there in the past and even been a part of it freshman year um we were excited to have our band move this year at our football games so we could have one student section where they're not separated um our captains attended the fall SEC captains meeting this is a seasonal meeting for our Sports captains and provides them with an opportunity to meet with other captains of other schools and share ideas in regards to leadership uh the captains also heard from a keynote speaker on the topic of mental health in athletes um and tomorrow night is a great day to support Athletics at our school our volleyball team hosts Hampden at 5 30 and football hosts Glastonbury at seven o'clock it's a great night to support our volleyball players and football players and cheerleaders in band um and also additionally last week I believe Thursday it was we had our pep rally at our school that was a great way to introduce school spirit of the Year especially to our incoming freshmen and our seniors Juniors and sophomores who have been a part of it for a uh for at least two years um and I wanted to save our my favorite thing for last so Cheshire High School is one of a record 29 Connecticut high schools being honored with a 2022-2023 Michael's Jewelers achievement cup award Cheshire is being recognized with the Michael's Jewelers achievement cup for the sixth time in seven years which is a tremendous accomplishment schools that are a part of the ciac's Class Act program can be considered for the Michaels Jewelers achievement cup award and um Mr parisino I discussed with him today he wanted me to say who says people don't move to Cheshire for the nightlife first of all thank you so much for having us here we're really honored I speak on behalf of both of us for that um to kind of start myself off I would just like to say we have had a really successful start to the school year welcoming incoming freshmen and new students and just getting everyone back into the swing of things uh before the school year started we had our freshman orientation which through link crew and with the help and Leadership of Mrs pelz one of our assistant principals we welcomed all the freshmen in we split them into groups we did activities they got to meet teachers the new school resource officers the school counselors and get tours around the school and learn a little bit about what kind of what it's like to be at Cheshire High School the opportunities involved and of course they got to meet Dr Solon and then moving on from there we had the first day of school um we had all of our seniors and their senior shirts getting ready to celebrate for their last year and we had everyone meeting with their advisories going to their first classes and really getting back into the swing of things and being a Ram uh moving on we have some other things going on extracurricularly in the schools aside from the sports the fall play just finished up their auditions and are beginning their rehearsals for a show that will be in November and they have been working incredibly hard I'm not personally in it but I'm hearing some from some of my drama friends and they're really excited to present this one it's a really fun show with interesting characters so there's that we have um the NHS induction for our National Honor Society coming up on Wednesday September 27th at 7 30 a.m they're the students who have above a 4.0 GPA and participate in at least 70 community service hours and 30 leadership hours as well as write an essay they will be honored for their achievements and and welcomed into this club that participates in community service around Cheshire and participates in all kinds of food drives or anything along those lines so that is exciting we also have the club Fair coming up which is a great opportunity for new students and students who have already been here to get a feel for the opportunities around them whether they be fun clubs like just like ball club or career oriented clubs like Mock Trail or anything like that and we have a totally wide variety um Dr Gad always says to new freshmen that they would be hard for us to find a club that they did not like and I would really say that I'm sure that's true for all students and if they can't find one they can always make their own so the club fair is a really great opportunity to scope out all of those really awesome groups to be a part of and meet new people and then on my last note we also have the PSAT coming up for freshmen sophomores and juniors and that will be on October 18th so of course they are getting ready for that and getting ready to start learning a little bit about what the college process is going to be like or the post grad process if they're not planning on going to college and our school counseling office has really been Helping Seniors get into their post-grad plans through senior meetings and presentations offered so that's it on my end thank you so much guys uh questions from the board members 10 10.

2023-09-22 Washtenaw County, MI YouTube / CTN Ann Arbor transcript source: youtube Renters Commission 9/21/23 · passage 2
I know I can't vote but I would support I would support that I mean I'm seeing it you know from the student perspective I'm seeing rents like I've never seen them before and what's what I see happening in my world is that um you know students who can't afford there are a lot more students who can't afford to live in Ann Arbor than could before and that's impacting them in a lot of ways you know when you're not on campus you don't have the same opportunities there's more stress there's more I mean there's there's just a lot more involved when we have more and more students that can't afford to live in Ann Arbor so from that perspective I would be really in support of of what Julie said um and and I you know I'd love to see it more affordable for for um my clientele I guess Jamie sorry raised my hands yeah I second that um really what everyone has said um I feel like asking city council to make a more formal statement is kind of like the least we can do in our limited um abilities that we have as a commission and I know the university has been doing some research into um like the impact of current oh Financial well so it would be a good time hopefully you might want to turn your video on we can't hear you oh I can't hear you maybe other people can I can either no you froze well we'll come back to you Jamie okay sorry about that uh I promise you we'll come back to you but once your internet clears up uh Bob so I wonder if city council may be waiting for this commission to propose this um before they before they would do the resolution I think they would want to see you know what this commission feels about it um before they make their decision thanks bud Jeff um yeah I mean I agree with foreign it's city council has a lot to deal with first of all so you're right um but I also agree that you know in a lot of ways Ann Arbor residents know what's best friend armor and to not have the ability to even consider it I think is is a detriment to the community um and then that's just with all the other problems that we have too well seeing as how I haven't really heard any opposition to the idea you propose Julia I think it makes sense to just go ahead and make the motion um do I get this is a question to Kristen can we just make a motion and have that forwarded on to uh city council or should we really write it write it out in resolution form um if you make the motion and approve it we can um put it on the council agenda um you don't have to do the extra stuff okay great and Justice I think I mentioned this before but I've believe that so I think the city of Pontiac did pass a resolution I'm not sure what other cities have done that but I think that Ypsilanti is at least discussing it if they haven't already passed a resolution so you know there's a lot of other cities that are discussing this I think it's a very timely issue but I'll pass it over to Julia if you're ready to make that motion sure um the Ann Arbor Runners Commission requests Ann Arbor City Council to pass a resolution supporting the removal of the state's ban on rent control which is act 226 of 1988.

2023-09-22 Passaic County, NJ YouTube / CPS TV transcript source: youtube September 21, 2023 - Clifton Board of Education Meeting · passage 2
yes lucky me right as coveted began for those who don't know a little background on me I have three daughters age 12 9 and 3 and CCMS School 3 and soon to be kindergarten I'm 42 lifelong Clifton resident I lived in botany Village Lakeview Ave off of Lakeview Ave and in Dutch Hill currently I'm a senior director at Berkeley College and I.T Department reporting to the CIO I've been there for about 19 years now which gives me a perspective on what students need coming into college setting before serving as a board member I helped fund and push a campaign with students community members and staff included included other struggling districts like us to ensure our state funding this successful Endeavor has funded our schools close to 100 million dollars since passing legislation in our favor and we'll continue to secure 50 million dollars each year moving forward I'm on the HSA for school three nccms I donate my time to DJ events for both schools as well as fundraising for school three since my wife is the president there I was on the NJ SBA State Board of Directors representing Passaic County as an alternate I'm happy to see our own uh Mr Paris here now carrying that torch I think he's an excellent fit for that role as a past board member I've served on all committees over my tenure the largest accomplishment was selecting our new superintendent when Dr Robert Posey came to Clifton the first thing he we did together was to tour every school and make a list of items that need to be fixed you don't go 10 years on their fund and a half a billion underfunded to still have a pristine facilities as as a board we came up with historic referendum that passed almost 70 percent in favor showing our town cares about our schools when covet hit we rolled out a 1-1 device policy and supplied all students with laptops we ensured our community had food to eat by setting up pickup locations for free if needed over those three and a half years we updated bathrooms fixed Fields added new weight room we're getting air conditioning everywhere and we're able to harden our security in school provide a better environment overall for our kids our town was chosen as one of the best places to live in 2023 and while other factors play into that you can be sure education played a heavy role with it being in the top category for the ranking so what's up next in my opinion a large Focus has been on facilities I think now we get back to the basics which is education student achieving and well-being should be at the Forefront I want to support new programs so that we could be leading in education and allow our kids to get to be able to get jobs and create a business if they wanted to to right out of school advocating for estate funding to experience expand Pre-K will help our kids get a jump on education fundamentals his exposed early on do better in their academics it will also free up finances at home since some pay out of pocket for Pre-K chat GPT and AI is at its infancy but I would love to see our students exposed to this to see what possibilities they have there and how they can leverage this new technology in ways never imagined I want to expose students to a variety of things so they could identify early on what they're passionate about to find their god-given talent early and get a leg up on other kids that they're competing against in this world of remote work teacher support and professional development is another area of Focus Education at its core is a teacher in the students we need to ensure that they have what is needed to work with our kids and have the information and material resonate so our students are successful Safety and Security are areas that we need to continue to grow parent engagement is another opportunity for us Clifton is very diverse and many of his parents parents speak different languages allowing us to bridge the gap and make connections to our teachers and to parents ensure we're all rowing in the same direction towards our goals the job of a board commissioner as you know is not easy you're dealing with a large District everyone has opinions on what to do but it's up to the voters of this town to determine which three people out of the Slate of seven candidates will align with the future of Clifton I have three little girls so I have a lot writing on what we do here please consider voting for me Joe Canova to continue working for our town again I'm lucky number seven on the value on the ballot thank you and good night [Applause] oh all right good evening um my name is Elias Ragsdale I serve as president of the Clifton student union and this year also president of the student council Association um I think you all know me um I wanted to thank you first of all for the success we've been able to have in communication between the union and the board and of course the administrators at Clifton High School um I was just thinking at the last meeting about when I came here to talk about the tennis courts and I remember Mr Dubois used to do the same thing and now if we ride behind CHS the tennis courts are beautiful so um I think that's evidence of the good communication that has been had and I thank you all for being so attentive to our issues and whatever has come up I would like to congratulate our new senior representative student representative Jada who you'll hear from in a bit um she also works at the union and she's a very bold representative so I think there's a lot in store for the future the start of school has been good I believe we have three more security guards in high school which is always great um and also I'd like to talk about the voter registration drive that's going on this week it started on Tuesday I believe the 19th and so far Jay's going to talk about this tomorrow as well we've quadrupled the amount of registers that we've had when it comes to students that are 17 and 18.
