yeah when the intro hits uh I think the thing is still looping hello everybody and welcome to week two of the ihsen competitive season today's game is going to be against Southwood High School now we won week one against the leeville lancers and South W lost their first match last week against Seager High School our starting map is Battlefield now let's go ahead and uh explain Battlefield would you like to do so yeah so Battlefield has actually a very big blast radius I actually have the numbers right here so they count them in cubic squares so it has 192 tall cubic squares and W with sorry widthwise is 240 cubic squares and it is the best map to spike in especially with characters like Luigi or snake Isabella does have some spikes but it's very hard to pull off same thing with samis now that's enough for the stage for right now let's get into the players of this game today yeah Sam's projectiles with s with villagers pocket ability which takes projectiles away from them and makes them uh their own Sam now Sam now Travis is going to jump off twice here taking two stocks away and then to start this game they're going to uh taunt or well one of them is but who cares uh okay uh we shall be back folks uh if you missed it uh samis is back here he took the first game uh with one stock remaining so he is at a severe disadvantage right now looks like the Villager player seems to be doing not a lot to get in right now but still seeming to put up a pretty good fight here side B from the Villager putting out a Lloyd looks like he's going to be making a tree ooh Travis going to do a charge shot not going to hit but still putting the pressure on both players are and other side B from Travis not a lot going on here but Travis is near the ledge villager to 52% not a lot of action going on here as both of these characters are pretty known for their uh projectile heavy gameplay and lack of action if you will staying far away ooh and a fully charged charge shot going to hit doing a massive damage on the Villager part now for those who are unaware damage is calculated via uh the bottom percent the higher the number is the more knock back you take which as you can see right there got the Villager knocked pretty far back o Samus at a pretty getting there percent a couple more hits and it's going to be almost death percent but ooh no not yet ooh down smash from Travis another one but looks like Village is going to decide be back up smash not going to connect a couple more neutral bees here trying to dominate pressure here here that's ooh tree not get to hit villager in the corner pushing outside bees lot of tension on these players Parts one good hit to the Villager player and then and they are dead ooh and that's going to beat the game so that's tied game here folks WIS that's going to tie up the the game and who do you think is going to be next uh I don't know if I if I had to say though I'd say they could probably send in a Jaden uh who plays Isabelle who is a similar character in uh stature to uh it to a villager oh looks like it's Noah looks like it's me oh looks the and coming in now is Travis aka the rat no we do not say that yeah but it's true same as as get getting rat kills or Kos if you have you want to call it all righty so how stocks work is basically how you saw in the first match I lost two of my lives so I had to throw myself off two times so villager had to face that one life I had left and since I didn't take any stocks from villager he does not have to throw himself off so they can just start right away looks like ising game Watchers a pretty great character still on Final not final he could be pretty annoying sometimes though uh Mr gaming watch or the Villager Mr gaming watch Mr gaming watch can actually pocket that tree which does a lot of damage so I want no I'm sorry no he cannot but he can uh reflect the tree that's why I was thinking I'm thinking villager or Isabella Isabella can pocket yes it looks like Lucas is going for that combo grabs trying to keep him up the air doesn't quite do it but does ledge guard him enough really hoping to get that down smash does not get it off H for the inin invincibility lag for the up smash does not get it he's going off and on stage pretty weird for Mr game watch to see he is trying to keep him up or away from him as much as he can goes through the random side B oh but he does get killed by tree that's what saying tree does a lot of damage doesn't matter if you're at 60 it will knock you back a lot yeah and raise your percentage up to at least 100 it does not matter he Shields it which it's pretty scary doing that cuz that could that your shield and send you flying mhm well no actually it just stuns you that was just Jigglypuff is it just Jigglypuff yeah it's just Jigglypuff cuz Jigglypuff and is only like 2 o oh well yeah villager grabs the grab Lucas not reflect the rocket but can he reflect the tree does he know he can reflect the tree that's a b of question he's not absorbing anything but he does get the forward smash off villager also gets the forward aerial off the tree grows and hits Lucas up Lucas goes for down air misses the up smash gets forward smashed that's a pity come on Lucas no he does not reflect it so weird to see a lot of game plays Miss game watch is just reflecting that tree goes to down there hits it right he does not get it he's trying to keep him off stage or find a move that can kill him but it does not seem working out for it's not working out for him no like I said earlier in the beginning of this uh commentary is that Battlefield is a pretty big stage the third biggest stage out there so he has to get him high percentage or Spike which Mr gameat is not a great spiking attit neither is villager so they're equal footing here and what would be the biggest map uh the biggest map I believe is it's an illegal stage so you can't do it but it is uh the one map was Ridley can't remember it Metroid map Metroid that's the one I'm thinking of but goes to the treat reflects it there was go he's finally using that reflective move enough so now the Villager is going back off that tree looks like Lucas gets the up smash he is just trying to keep him off stage and he's doing it greatly but the Villager could do it just as well a spike they're just swapping places now yep as long as they can keep them off stage they probably have the advantage yeah yeah but that's not always all that's not for everybody though yeah Samus isn't the great ledge guarder but at the same time she is and neither is Little Mac Little Mac is a main stage performer yeah goes for the forward throw does not seem to kill goes for Forward Air he's missing all the Forward Air sadly does get the down air though looks like the Villager is trying to stay away from his neutral bee which is just him throwing fruits and stuff and he might want to be careful cuz he's up in the 100 120s villager also want to be careful cuz that forward smash can kill any that was not a forward smash I'm sorry that was a down tilt yeah for smash could have also killed there alrighty villager did lose all three of a stock but sadly Lucas lost two stocks so we are up one stock I wonder who they going to counter pick judging by a judging by their gameplay right now I'm thinking it's probably going to be a sword fighter like Ike or maybe a Bowser junr Bowser J could have been great for a battlefield stage but isn't he also a good guard slider uh no but he has a great recovery that does damage looks like they are ready oh Bowser not Junior just Bowser oh yeah his upbe out of Shield can do some mean damage so it looks like Lucas has SD for S his down be is no better is it his down be basically just sits on him his side B is what you got to be concerned about his side B can uh does doesn't he grab you yeah he command grabs you for the folks at home command grab is he grabs you no matter what if you're shielding you roll anything else he just grabs you all righty and for the folks at home SD means self-destruct so basically they just throw themselves off looks go for upbe back air the upbe does not get the back back air you don't really see many people playing Bowser nowadays actually Bowser is a pretty high tier character really most people don't play him cuz he's slow and there's a lot of counters like um I play me brawler to counter heavy weights because heavy weights can get carried a lot yeah but it looks like the Bowser is doing the carrying and the Lucas just gets down air to uptil Misses and gets upbe uh yeah saved him save himself from game over yeah Mr gaming watch up is really good this might be it no unless Bowser can hit a amazing forward Smash down smash any kind of Smash really yeah or a command grab a command grab yep and that's that's game yeah I think sucks to see him go yeah I think Noah snake might be coming out here Noah snake is pretty good keep that heavy header away from him but like what I was saying uh snake would be a g great counter pick for it cuz he could just keep him away and he's a great ledge guarder so if he gets off I believe snake has two spiking moves for the folks at home spiking moves where they just hit him down just straight off the stage looks like they went Jaden said so it's going to be Isabelle gameplay oh no sorry Sandman that is Noah alrighty almost back into the match here kind of interesting to see how Noah plays Noah got Elite smash which is gonna be amazing looks like Jaden's stretching out ready for his match hopefully it doesn't come to that but if it does it does and this will be a good matchup too uh it just depends heavy weight and a no sake isn't a night white uh lightweight it just depends what roster you're looking at in Smash Wiki he is a mediumweight and then for the official smash page he is a lightweight but so pretty much just depends on yeah there's no real classing for snake unless you want he's both technically but looks like Noah is really getting him combos that was an up a with the um mortar wasn't it yep up smash be exact I said Noah just wants to keep him away but he actually gets hit by his own grenade it's not always an option you got with snakes so you have some pretty good combos he could do with just air projectiles goes for the down til H hits up smash does not connect forward smash does not either bous gets him an up be up tilts Bower just wants him above him so he doesn't have a lot of options besides down being which is a C4 which it looks like he stick no he s to a stage that Mort messes him up if he if he gets hit with any of theive yep any explosive will just send him flying oh yeah that's actually a great snake combo really doing a down tilt so it launches him up into a C4 very common all righty it looks like Noah is just into all the grenades there's nothing you could do for that explosion yeah and when he gets close he just get he just gets kicked away yeah get pelted with more grenades and one of those grenades I believe can charge a can survive a halfway charge Bowser forward smash which is insane yeah but looks like he gets the up air almost gets a kill sadly doesn't no tries to go back misses his up Bowser upbe connects but he forgets his C4 is right there Noah is pretty great at hiding that C4 I didn't even see that yeah I did not even see that yeah back when snake was first introduced I believe in uh melee he actually had clay MERS so whenever opponent got near him uh they blew up but now in Ultimate he has C4 so he can blow up anytime he wants or it blows up at a after a certain time limit no it's just like the grenade yeah oh a grenade you can actually hold it and cook it but looks like Noah is trying to do a lot of Chip damage so he can get either a killing option he could three star he yes but he has to be careful CU he doesn't want his own C4 goes for an up Smash Up smash connects it does not kill no but with that Nikita missile will it does not yep he did just trying to keep him away scary option when he's approaching you yeah Noah tries to go for a neutral draft that takes Noah's first stock which is not bad he's up two stops could just turn around yep and that's game yep snake grab up till amazing yeah that could man I could hear them all the way from over here for about a room away must have been a pretty happy Victory Noah's up to stocks I want to see who they counter pick the counter pick has to be fun yeah so it's kind of interesting they went heavyweight so I'm just wondering if I should go my second main which is a me brawler oh yeah it's me brawler Rick yeah move set a one two 3 two yeah I don't know what you're huffing and puffing about my M brawler Rick is terrible terrible terrible yeah absolutely terrible all righty see who they pick we for that so wait you want to we want to guess which one they're going to pick oh yeah uh Lucina if not seph rooth it's actually common saying in the Super Smash Bro tournament kind of thing he uh DLC usually wins oh like this Joker Joker from the Persona 5 series I recently played it yeah surprised you didn't get Poke at the Persona series H I'm surprised you didn't poke at the Persona series I thought you would liked them uh Noah has to throw himself off once and the folks at home Joker's aspect that little bar right there it fills up and then after it fills up it basically gets arson and it's very powerful gives him kind of different move sets but I don't know if he can survive long enough to do it he can build it up if he down bees which basically is a counter all righty no one goes for forward smash misses because he got hit out of it up til misses that Dash is hit he's he's prying grenades Joker is sitting there and just taking it now he has arson oh yeah arson if you down be like the move he was doing that to absorb yeah he does more damage his knockback his knockback is better and he can reflect certain projectiles move and his side be is a lot stronger too watch it he might get flung off yeah yeah also be careful too when he has arson he has a spike move so you got to be careful off stage and he covers even better no it only last a certain time yeah until that meter dies down again oh but it's very easy to fill up in a character like snake well yeah cuz's he's already got it back now yeah which arson is a very scary thing if fully charged Forge smash can break Shield that wasn't what 5 Seconds that he already had it back yeah but it looks like no he takes a stock o already he goes for the up uptil does 42 damage that's actually pretty good I didn't know it did that much damage right it looks like they just dashing each other out neither one wants to really approach when they do approach it's kind of fatal for them no goes for the missile misses the missile he just wants to keep his distance away from this arson looks his grenades are saving him from the side B prove oh but back air connects which does gets Joker stock I mean snake stock sorry yeah it's kind of confusing the both guys running around hitting each other one's just one's just not using one's using explosives and the other isn't yeah one of them actually has a gun move which really yeah if Joker press is be up tilt kill Amazing by Noah now it's tied yeah uh like I was saying if Joker presses B has a gun option which is great offstage move oh he went to build up arson but gets punished for it his uptil does connect but is a quite risky with snake you don't want snake above you for that reason he's just got two C4s off off and the grenade oh is that no oh and that hits him yeah Noah tried to go for the cheesy kill for the up air I definitely would have hit oh goes for the dash dash conect he just wants to keep that joker away as far as he can but he doesn't want him to get arson and he gets the stage Spike that was insane all right it looks like they're celebrating a lot too yeah snake is from met solid a lot of people shout her game apparently did not know that all righty yeah they were celebrating a moment ago as you see there's Jaden Noah and there's Jomo wave the camera guys oh I don't know if they listening or not oh they did not listen no all righty I'm going to see who they counter pick if they go the same exact cat they went last time their counter pick is best a platform pick stage but they have yet to see Jaden move set with Isabelle Isabelle's move set's pretty good all righty a shout out to our sponsor uh sweet exceptions bake shop right here in town if you're looking for a tasty uh sorry a tasty treat sweet exception bakery shop has got you covered look at an East Main Street across from the flag Flagstar Bank yeah I butched it up I'm sorry it's fine I do it all the time yeah also hope I was out for two days sick yeah yeah so I didn't really get to read this until I just got here today I already it looks like they gohost Joker in Pokemon Stadium 2 that was a map we played last we I thought it was I thought this was Battlefield it was uh starting off battlefield but they lost so they get a counterpick stage okay a stage that best uh helps their character which gets rid of that third platform but it looks like jadden was our first pick which is great see right there that was the gun I was talking about and that's a rocket in the ground right there that Jaden just placed wasn't it yep it was uh the official move for Prett much just a land mine isn't it the offishal remve that smash Community called it is just landmine it looks like Jaden is getting juggled with up up airs but he Shields the neutral be which surprising he didn't pocket he loves pocket those things he's expecting it doesn't quite pocket it though all righty he wants some Joker to back off with arson he does pocket pocket that one he has to use it sparingly because he only gets one tell he Pockets another one no long land mine hits up air it's no he gets back on stage is B goes for The Cheeky forward smash Miss he Shields runs him off stage gotta be careful uh following Joker off stage he's a tether which basically has a little rope that goes up and he grabs it it can Spike you all righty Jaden knows the map information pretty well so that joker better watch out misses the down smash Jaden does have that one oh and he wastes it right when I say looks like the landmine does find the stock looks like Jaden gets first Blood back air hits does not seem to be able to pocket that he's just filling up arson quickly yeah to one thing about Joker uh very kind of weak because he's just a normal dude with a dagger and a gun but when he gets arson he basically gets superpowers yeah like I said last time his moves get increased his range increases and he gets the stock on J lost the stock yeah not the worst thing in the world yeah maybe could pull this back CU now it's tied absolutely this Joker is really knowing how to get his arson back which is great tied with five minutes left Yep looks like Jaden is just oh yeah should probably mentioned Joker has a thing called curse damage so basically just like poison as long as it stays on him for a little bit it does tick damage how long does that last for uh it just depends if he's an arson I believe it lasts for 5 seconds when he's not oh and Joker just lost another stock yep Jaden just kept them off stage pretty scary for non arson Joker yeah you don't know if that tether grab is going toit lane or not right it looks like he is just backing way I would too facing this Isabella but one problem is Isabella can just really dragg you back in Bella is just saying get away from me there ain't no room for you if you're here all righty let's go the slingshot connects and that is game yeah it's kind of weird that the slingshot kind of knocked them all the way to blast zone yeah it goes to prove we shouldn't trust kids with slingshots just saying they're going to take out a squirrel they're going to take out an eye yeah kids are dangerous I I'm kind of interested to the counterpick pretty sure it's going to be Bowser Bowser is going to be a pretty scary thing for iSell yeah big heavy 300 lb and then if Jaden loses is it over or no no no this is a new game I should probably mentioned that so this is a new game last round they lost there's four players in each team all four of their players lost two of our players lost and one of our players w two players won I guess I say it's two yeah it's a team competition so when all four of the opponent's team lost all their stocks and went on to the next round that's where they got to pick the stage and that is where it started over that's why we're seeing Jaden start off because he didn't start off or played the last time which is not a bad thing it's actually a very good thing for our team so mean we have to waste all our resources so this the first time they ever seen our Isabel which I personally think is quite scary because if you stay off stage too much she's just going to fishing rope you and then she's going to Stage bike you which as you saw last game with no know uh stage bikes are pretty scary unless you know how to Tech them which techs is basically you know how to uh stop the move from happening Al righty it looks like they just waiting to pick the character or who they're going to choose CU like I said it's the first time ever seen Jaden's character excuse me I got to cough real quick I don't cough in the mic you're so rude yeah n she I usually am oh it looks like they choose Zer suit samis ooh it's a risky pick J Zero Suit Samos is that just her without the suit yeah it's just Samos without the suit okay yeah but she definitely has a different move set she has a I'm questioning that outfit right now uh yeah I'm really questioning that Jen has SD once Mar looks like the Zero Suit is ready to go whenever Jaden is Jaden taunts and the Zer taunt all right it looks at the Zer suit Falls victim to the landmine Jaden grapples though gets hit by the paralysis is but Zer falls back into the landmine all righty Jaden is juggling them no unlike samis is zeros Suit Samus a lightweight or uh they're both lightweights or medium weights like I said depending on what website you use okay so it's pretty much like snake yeah okay it just depends what you're classifying certain weight classes ass like Jigglypuff is a floaty featherweight character but in some smash wikies they are lightweight all righty it looks like Jaden gets the slingshot again he does not want to Pro uh fall victim to that paralyzing stuff CU they couldn't mean stock he is just baiting into his landmines it does not see seem that the opponent can know where they're at especially on this kind of stage where you're keep shooting it up from above so you can't really see the landmines good thing they kind of disappear after a little bit bit charging out charging out they're just trying to uh rode down Jaden's Shield but he's going to try to pocket the next one it's going to hit him he's going to go for a grab misses but the zerit counters all righty zerit is trying to get all this damage that she can at least take one more stock before she goes but Jaden do not want that happening so he's going to back away let the Samus approach him playing to the land mine he could fish and hook her onto that land mine could he uh yes but usually get thrown afterwards oh so the landmine would just do a little bit of damage believe it's 2% so Jaden is just trying to be some attacks so he can punish them looks like they clashed she finally Shields a land mine jayen is just going in for the kill now gets the fishing hook throws them away so they don't really want to approach each other but at the same time they do so they're just testing each other out but the zeru has to be very careful cuz she should not approach too much cuz it could mean stock if she does yeah that would mean game too yeah no uh yeah sorry that would mean game sorry it's fine I don't know why I thought looking at the WR Hearts yeah well stocks he could just fishing hooker and get it over with no I don't think he could kill at this but the paralyzing thing he could have down smashed up smashed but he does not really want to approach cuz even if he does wear down time he gets the win I guess guess it does I don't think it was until he uh shot the paralyzing or batter so Isabel does find the victory I wonder who they're going to counterpick against this Isabel W going to be any guesses to the counter pick might be a sword character cuz we saw a sword character first yeah so what do you think really to say either SE seph or I can't say his name I cannot pronounce his name no matter what Final Fantasy uh believe the seven yeah Final Fantasy 7 SEO or l t link oh T Link's pretty good pretty uh bori he's ignoring but good oh yeah absolutely same thing with link link is pretty good yeah all right while we're doing this let's get a a shout out to another oh sorry I'm still recovering from my sness let's give a shout out to another sponsor action it auction it sorry do you have a favorite nonprofit sorry the script is kind of weird do you have a favorite nonprofit that could use a awesome fundraising idea auction it has an is an online inperson auction profile action profile sorry that can help your nonprofit host a great Charity Auction find out more at auction.io that's auction.io sorry looks like counterpicked villager so it looks like Jaden still has throw himself off once this time you might have to read that script cuz I butchered it a lot I'll just read it again I'll probably end up doing the definitely have to no it's not going to be as bad as I did he pocket it's a tree that's what exactly what I was talking about all righty looks like they just want to keep the distance away from each other Isabelle has the upwards rocket but the Villager has a sideway rocket so it's going to be very interesting gamep playay he throws a tree does not connect if it try to yeah he pocket it now the Villager cannot use that rocket both have rocket yes they both have rocket but they're both different Rockets oh like Jaden comes down from the the bottom the villagers come from the side oh yeah uh Jaden's going to try to pocket the tree more often because that tree like I said last time can do a lot of damage and can kill at 60 on actually it might be 40 at Pokemon Stadium two cuz it has a smaller Blast Zone yeah and he Pockets another rocket yep I'm just wondering if he's going to keep the rocket this time because if he keeps the rocket the Villager cannot use rocket again oh but it looks like the for pretty much just disables it for him yes uh just like Diddy Kong's banana if he does not have it he cannot use it again but it looks like he oh I guess I lied as long as it's not in play I should say yep but he pocks it again but misses just got to keep on pocking on the Rockets like I said you should not trust kids with slingshots cuz it's just a kid shooting a dog with slingshot it's dog shooting back horrible things happen yep terrible terrible things will happen if you give a kid a sling shot y like this just one of them is going to be off stage one of is going to be on stage and it's going to be instant collision with slingshots Jen does get the N into the slingshot he just wants this villager approach him then at other times he's he switches it up that's the one thing I find confused about Jaden he never lets opponent read him he always reads opponent because Jaden switches it up oh his the roet out of f yeah it can and he gets the spike ooh it looks like the Villager grabs so uh Isabel is actually a Mir character so like Daisy and Peach is kind of the same V villager and Isabelle is kind of the same so the miror characters Pockets the rocket he turn ups up oh but he oh he recovers from that that was an amazing recovery got hit with both Rockets yeah was that a firework he just used yeah the his up smash yes that was a firework that actually killed me the first round yeah I didn't to they were better at me better than me and they got me so it looks like the Villager got the rocket off this time rocket is really trying to follow the villagers trying to get the what I call it cheesy Kill by getting him off stage and getting a bowling ball I believe this villager is placing tree as a protection cuz he just doesn't want Jaden to have it either cuz that blocks all projectiles doesn't it uh blocks most most yeah there's some that uh can go over or above it but yeah yeah from the fact too Isabelle can also pocket the Villager bowling ball oh say wait you just poet a character I wish Kirby could technically do that looks there's uh Jordan right here I don't know if he wants to help commentate with this but I don't know um I'm actually here to tell you guys um the jb1 oh really jb1 uh do you guys have microphones or this no I'm please do that it's very uncomfortable uh we did but they forgot the stand so we can't use it to cuz all you're going to be here oh and it looks like Jaden gets the kill uh we also got Brody here what up Brody so um so basically we're going to be saying um some of our thoughts from the matchup just for you guys you guys at home um so basically uh we won um it was very hard fought um our our opponents were very good and they gave us a good run for their money yeah yep just like Varsity right now their opponents is giving us a GI for run for our money they definitely are oh yeah yeah they're wow um I'm very happy of the team that we've done what our team has done uh we've done done amazing stuff today and I'm really excited for the future um we won 2 and 0 today uh but that was only because like uh their team was probably wasn't on the ball but they are I'm pretty sure if they were on the ball they would have smoked us oh yeah yeah like a few SDS here and there but but it was really good look like Jen has th himself off once mhm all righty is that all you guys got to say today is that all actually no there is one more thing I want to say all right this man here he killed it Brody killed it all righty Brody fliping killed it he did too thank you man I think you guys all did well all of us did Sam Izzy Adriana Brody Jordan Travis and Jackson you guys have done an excellent job commentating thank you even though most people s say it sounds like golf commentary which I had to agree I love the golf commentary then I'll give you some golf claps oh well thank you Bowser just gets the down air gets a back air so like I said earlier uh in the setup I think Bowser and Isabelle is going to be a very scary matchup all right so I'm going to head out and watch the game see you guys you guys have fun right time commentating I will definitely do that definitely gets a down air with Stage spike is kind of scary like I said B is a really heavy hitter and Isabelle is a very lightweight character so it's kind of scary what if he's going to try to go for command grab most Bowsers do like it but I don't know if he's able to cuz Isabelle loves the Hop oh he gets command grab that is game and that is game with three stocks left so he won't have to jump off will he nope but it does look like he did phenomenally taking down three of our opponents right now this the last character we have to go up against so he did better than the Bowser did better than he did last time uh we do not really know because uh Bower is actually a counter pick against inabel oh yeah because I was like saying it's a puppy versus a oh well three ton dinosaur yeah I wonder who's going to play here it looks like Noah is going to play Noah did do get a three stock on the Bowser are we waiting for that you want to read the last sponsor of the day and we could reread the oent oh very well all right I got it then Wells County Foundation very special thanks to Wells County foundation for a special grant that allowed us to purchase the computer this stream is currently running on without their support we could not be able to provide the quality of game program you are now enjoying so thank you Wells County Foundation ready and at theend this I'm going to do the other uh sponsor that I accidentally butched up and then how many people are how many people are left uh this we have well I mean why should say how many more rounds are left uh this could be the last one if the Bowser loses all three of his stock or it could be the second to last one if Noah loses all three of his stocks okay then and who would be last would it be Lucas uh it would either be Mia or Lucas that's correct okay but it looks like Noah is just trying to keep distance away from Bowser I don't blame him Bowser is a pretty scary to carry like right there grab and kill it very early perent for some reason can actually grab and then Forward Air and you can combo that with down air yeah it's very scary but Noah snake is very scary because you don't want to approach it but you don't want to stay too far away yeah yeah so you got to find a medium ground which is usually jumping around most of his traps he sets yeah and let's see if we can find the C4 that he never mind he has not not placed it yet he's not placed it you can place it on people can't you you can but you usually have yeah he did place it on the top left platform but you usually have to be above him or right there next beside them to you be able to place the C4 on top of them it's a very risky option so this command grab does not reach Noah just tries to roll away from it it does not seem like it was working nope is he going to punish the up no Bowser goes for upbe upbe I said it's a very scary match up Noah down better watch it if one hit oh there he goes but then again a bower at 0% is kind of scary oh oh does not kill him yeah but now he also has to watch it too yeah we Al Noah does a little bit more damage cuz he is now what we call enraged uh so basically but it doesn't really matter no no loses stop basically when you get over 120 you get a slight damage boost to all moves really yep oh that little smoking uh thing that was happening around him that was him enraged okay yeah and you said that happens at 1 120 that happens at 1:20 or 130 depending on what weight class you are okay Noah just keeps on blowing himself up yeah but Le luckily he Shields it yeah and this looks like he's blowing the opponent more up than he is blowing himself up yeah oh I actually heard a very funny joke about snake today yeah uh Miss cocow actually told me it so yeah boom goite yeah it goes boom here comes the dynamite but at looks like boom here does not come to Dynamite look Dynamite actually throw himself off stage Bower grabbed the grenade he wants to Shield a lot of options I don't blame him you got to be careful cuz has the enrage doesn't he right now he's definitely enraged that little flum of smoke but it does not matter because yep now it's back to being tied no oh no blew himself up to get out of the command grab this Bowser is trying to find yep right there he stuck it on him and he blew it up instantly no way just shielding mer pretty just who can do the most damage right now uh most Bowser can kill with a forward smash by Edge so it's not really could most damage who could kill right now now both characters can get a KO he can kill but it's really risky though yeah cuz you could kill your you could it's definitely easy to be punished from a forward smash yeah but I don't see it really going to be happening goes for the dash Noah is trying to keep him away but keep him at the right distance where he doesn't really have to do much and Noah might want to watch it cuz it could be game for him oh does oh it does not Bower trying to find a finishing blow to Noah Noah's trying to do the same thing back he tosses a lot of grenades to hide from him oh fire does not have a kill option Noah as yeah that's game looks like vars did win here in a moment we're going to talk to one of the captain yep Mr Brooks but before that happens let me reread auction it uh because I butchered it last time do you have a favorite nonprofit that you could use a awesome uh F fun sorry like I said still get sness do you have a favorite nonprofit that you could use an amazing fundraising idea auction it is an online and inperson auction platform that can help you with their nonprofit host a great Charity Auction find out at auction.io that's auction it what up Mr Brooks that's coach Brooks it's the same to me I guess coach Brooks works as well all there's a mic for you if you want that come on Mr Mr so how' you feel about the team today you know I thought we played really well our practices have been going pretty good um our team is learning to do some extra drills with the help of the some good captains that we have including the guy just to my right here um I didn't do map much I just find the map information did really well tonight we were pretty proud of our team um looking forward to seeing what happens in the future but we're pretty excited about what's happening yeah do you feel that we could have state this year just like OverWatch and Tetris for the past two years had it boy that's a good question um I think it's a little early to tell we're off to a really solid start uh but uh time will tell yeah it really would do you have any other information or any jokes to crack up r still on stream I'm fresh out tonight oh man gosh well wait wait wait wait why we're still on stream tell us how you lost the finger it's trade secret polar bear all righty peace thanks for joining us this evening the next two the next week is Tetris Monday October 23rd all righty see you

SL lacrosse slf football SL allpurpose field on a beautiful Wednesday night tonight we actually have all the lights for this game looking forward to a great matchup the East Long Spartans versus the Northampton Blue Devils this is their first matchup of the Season they're in different divisions so they only play one time tonight we have pink out night here in East Long medal you'll see the East long metal fans and East Long medal players and coaches and staff all wearing pink and support of breast cancer awareness it's great to see the ball girls on the sidelines and on the end lines as well all dressed in pink the fans all dressed in pink from East Long Meadow uh fans are on their way in it's a really humid night as many of you know today was a blistering day day into the high 880s here so big change of temperature we'll see if that has any impact on the play of the game in terms of the student athletes on the field getting tired you see both teams you actually on the screen you see the East Long Meadow team and they are in a circle getting their last minute instructions from coach moer and the captains are going to Rally the team together and I'm sure they're going to do their usual champ East Long Meadows coached byz coach for Northampton Vanessa winitzki assistant coach David ell Northampton having a great season I think that they are really been dominating against the teams in their division they have they're a young team they have scored they've got multiple multiple uh goal scorers mostly freshman and sophomore so you can see out there you saw metal certainly the bigger team the more experienced team and the favorite in this matchup um but Northampton has fared well against teams even in uh even in East Long Meadow's division such as west side and they were able to put some balls in the back of the net against L Meadow although that was a little bit of a lopsided Affair and we are on their way Easton medal maintaining possession of the ball right there middle of field ball played back to Jillian Stevens then over to number eight Schwarz Marino nope that's sorry number eight Lizzy Roman she passes it out of bounds trying to get it over there to lukasik on the left hand side it's thrown in number 10 and Lizzy Roman BS it up off the head it's in the middle of the field touched there by 11 Maggie Stevens who's just been spectacular this season since she has found her role in the middle of the field Here Comes senior Addie Jordan team's top goal scorer this one is also played it's played over number 14 there had it Bella white who's also been just really solid there in the middle of the field as the season has progressed and really found her found her way as a Midfield leader along with long with ball goes out of bounds Northampton has it it's played back good play there by Addie Jordan to get it back now it's kind of rupted there by number 14 Bella white chasing it down here it comes Ali Thompson she gets the through ball it's going to be Speedy oh almost a collision there really really showing off her speed there Addie Jordan the goal he had to come out and make a great play or that was going to be a very simple play Simple play for Addie Jordan this one's played down the sidelines off of Northampton going to be a throw in here for East Long Meadow as Caroline Lucas grabs the ball she throws it in a solid throw in the number 14 dou white plays it off her body back here to Lizzie Roman who swings it all the way to the other side grabb there by Addie Jordan with a great move step over ball plays through number 17 Whitmer and here comes Thompson Thompson goes right at it gonna get an offside call there another really good play by the Northampton goalie to come out and intercept that attempted pass across the middle then almost opportunity for Al Thompson number 23 that one in the back of the net going to be a free kick here the Northampton goalie gives it a ride over the head of Lizzie Roman Gillian Stevens the center back plays it up it's going to be played there by number 11 Maggie Stevens back over there to number 13 Jill Jill Stevens has it Ken Marino has it gets it over there to number 18 Anna Roman 18 Roman over over to Bella white Bella white looking Bella white seeing Bella white putting that one through and here comes Jordan down the right sideline we're going to get a flip in the middle she plays it back puts it on her left foot and she fires it across oh just a little bit not enough on that one but a good try what a great move to pull it back and then get it to the middle for a left footed shot the goalie had to make a good save a little more force on that one and it might have been in the back of the net good play there by number 11 Maggie Stevens has it comes here it's over the head Northampton has it here in the middle of the field it's good play Here by number 14 Isabella white coming back to get it not played great there by Marino a little bit too hard on the touch but Northampton kicks it out of bounds it's going to be a throwin for East Long Meadow and Marina has the ball she throws it up to senior Edie Jordan Taps it back to Ken Marino uses her left foot mat Whitmer getting on it flipped over Jillian Stevens right on that here it comes through and very experienced Defender there Lizzy Roman gets in front of it but the Northampton player touches it gets it back it does not go out of bounds or does it it does just over the end line folks and we are going to get a goal kick for East Long meow goes to Roman Roman gets it he sends it up here to Thompson Thompson with a really good touch there actually really good touch but a good play by def out of bounds be a throw for has it she throws it upes kicked out of bounds Again by Flair throws it in there now it's kind of being battled for there with Bella white white had it number 18 chasing us down here anna Roman goes out to the side Ken Marino gon to chase it down covered almost in off sides there but it wasn't some good Foot Skills here being played by Northampton they try to get the ball into the middle being moved here comes Thompson Thompson plays it back it goes over here to Addy Jordan comes up again Thompson has it she's settling the ball down and she should plays it right through here comes Whitworth Mack is running along the sidelines tries to get it Northampton CLA intercepted it tries to pass it up four goes off her leg out of bounds takes it again on a throw in the Thompson Thompson a good touch there good play good play right there by white just couldn't get it off of her foot this one's played through it's going to be a speed chase down the sideline shielding well goie comes out plays it Taps it into her box picks it up this is going to be our first HT that's what they call it I'm GNA call it punt a little bit of a hard touch there by Matt but I'm glad to see she's first one to the ball that was a little bit of a problem last time here it comes again another good touch there ball gets played up almost through there good reach out by the Northampton Blue Devil Defender to keep that from getting a through ball for Ali Thompson she has it puts it on her right foot good play here a lot of space gets it over to senior top goal scorer Addie Jordan trying to make her way through takes two Defenders to get her off the ball what a good run there by Kenna Marino to intercept that pass but it goes off of her foot and out of bounds for a Northampton throw 33 minutes and 45 seconds remaining in the first half they're 40 minute hals mostly running clock crazy happens so this one gets boomed up o almost over the top again this one's going to get settled down by lucich she has it she plays it over to somebody from Northampton unfortunately got to keep your head up on that one there Caroline getting booted andix on it again just kind of goes through her a little bit use her body here to get in front and she does it goes out of bounds not sure that the referee is GNA call that one for Northampton getting throw number 14 takes it and this one's made its way through it looks like this good play there head in front kicks it out of bounds kick L meow for those of you at home who might be new to soccer when the ball goes over the end line past the goal if it was last touched by uh depending on who it's last touched by it either becomes a goal kick where you just saw the goalie take it from that position or alternatively it'll be a corner kick where they go to one of those flags on the corner and the offensive team then gets an opportunity in a Roman there in the middle of the field she's kind of had it taken away from her but she's right where she's supposed to be good play Here by liix going to use her speed takes the ball up the middle kicks it really kind of into the back of the play I think she was trying to get that ball over to Stevens here it comes again number 14 Bella white has it plays it up to number 11 number 11 is Maggie Stevens Stevens was on it here back blasted ball a little bit of a hard touch there by the campon CLA and now the ball's just kind of going in the wrong direction touched again good play there actually by Ali Thompson but uh players from east of the middle weren really running through that that's a good ball there but Jillian Stevens using her size her strength her speed take that northamp player off that ball almost goes out of bounds or does it does go over the endline that is going to be a goal kick because the more camped player was the last one to touch it before it went over that end line so we're going to get a goal kick here by east east usually does this little play right here on the goal kick they don't really kind of bombit they try to get it right you know from the goalie to one of the one of the Defenders right away good play there by Alli Thompson to be aggressive go after that set this up and here comes this is the pick and run soccer that East Long Meadow really does kind of like to play that's a good play there by Mack whitler really good to chase that down and force the Northampton Defender to do something was able to kick it off of whitler and then uh goes out of bounds so it's a BAL kick here for Northampton good play here Ken Marino has it kind of touches it up which is nice very nice soft touch right there Here Comes that's I just wanted to not on the replay that monno called the goal before the kick that is an announcer announcer experience right there I called that whitward goal a second before it happened whitward with the left foot into the back of the net freshman in the right spot opposite foot kind of on a volley as well takes a lot of skill to do that and uh she was able to do it got it over the Northampton goalie's head and that is a one nothing lead for East Long meow freshman wh with the second goal I believe of the Season very exciting see there Northampton had the ball after the goal good aggressive play right there scored by number 17 mat assisted by number two there in the middle of field takes a lot of a lot of Courage on behalf of the coach to put the uh put freshman in the middle of the field but he's done it he's been very successful with that play sort of all season long between Susa whitward Roman Stevens Bella white that group there sort of in the middle of the field has really come together as this season has come along and here it is here the chase good play here coming around the corner she's going to that's a good play kind of shielding there it goes out of bounds it's going to be a corner kick really nice play there by Addie Jordan she was able to use her ability to get the ball kind of down low and then didn't really have an angle to pull it back or do anything but she kicked it off of the Northampton player over the end line and so when it went out of bounds off Northampton Flair Easton medows going to get one of these Corner kicks we talked about about earlier and yeah I mean they just they're not really doing great on the corner kicks this year just like that corner kick there was an easy save it's a little bit too close to the goal not really going to give the players an opportunity to get it in the box also we noticed last game that eam meow just wasn't you know even on the good Corner kicks they were letting the ball get through on a bounce that nobody was touching it so certainly something that I think e medal can work as their as their season continues to progress here's whitler again kind of has the ball she's got great Foot Skills and just tried to flip that one in really good try there to flip it into Eddie Jordan they switch positions and maybe fortunately the Northampton flairer was able to get a little bit of a left leg on it and it bounces its way back to the Northampton goalie boots it out but good play there by number 14 B white it's good to see tonight they're just kind of being first to the ball really good pass there kind of switch Fields good play good play here wide open is Anna Roman she sends it back over to her sister Lizzie Roman and then over here to Lucas Lucas has it plays it up good try there would like to see Bella white put a little better run on that one here comes Addy Jordan she's got it whitler has it again she's playing through she touches it again good try great play here in a Roman in the right spot ball gets played outside to number six Sabina mne who's made her way into the game Anna Roman has it again plays it back to mne was a little bit out of her way this is really good passing here good play here over to whitward whitward has it little bit of a hard touch there by whitward and Northampton was able to gain control but Lucas using her strength there she gets it over to whitward whitward tried to get it over there and she does she gets it to Thompson who's got a great left foot she's down here on the side she pulls it over just kind of a harmless shot there out of bounds like to see her settle it down and then maybe challenge that player one-on-one she's got some really good Foot Skills and she can go left or right you're wearing that number 23 like Michael Jordan you think that have no problem going one-on-one with anybody seen Alli Thompson do it before and she's an incredible player a true leader on this East Long Meadow Spartans team one of the co- captains Here Comes Susa who's been playing really good here as the seasons progress in the middle of the field along with Whitworth out of bounds like's gonna get a throw [Music] in throwing here Lizzy Roman using her speed looks like she's G to pass that one back to Stevens I think I'm not sure if that was going back to Stevens or if it was going back to the goalie but out of an abundance of caution Stevens kcks that one out of bound so that Isam meow can set up its defense certainly Isam meow has been controlling the play here so far with 25 minutes and 27 seconds remaining they've been controlling in the play but it's only a one goal lead and in soccer as we know anything can happen at any given moment so you want to keep that pressure on if you're East Long Meadow good through ball there Stevens is defending well and I really I I love to see I call it back checking I'm not sure if that's what you call it or not but that when those midfielders really do hustle back and uh help out on defense instead of standing around and watching you saw a great play there I believe was B Roman back and really help out on defense good touch there by Susa off the shin but was got it right back to the defender good flip up there by Addie Jordan was off the left foot down the side side lines being chased by number six Sabina mne another one of those players who's really just been a stalwart in the middle of the field as the season has gone on I think coaches you know kind of found his way with players in the middle of the field moving them in and out making sure they're well rested there's just a lot of very evenly talented players there that have done just an exceptional job sort of all season long and here comes like Liz R there a good play it's up to whitler whitler fires one in there really good love that number sorry that was number 14 Bella white with the shot looked like whitler but it wasn't it was Bella white really good shot buy had to make save I like that here comes Bella white using her speed using her strength tries to touch it through and she does Susa with a an opportunity there and just a little bit off the side of the foot and it goes harmlessly wide out of bounds but certainly a really good pass there by white over to Susa Susa had a call it a mini opportunity wasn't a great opportunity but she just missed a little bit off the side of her foot Su has it again using her skills and she does she gets it over there to senior Addie Jordan then rushes to the middle of the field Jordan challenging one-on-one sends it for a ride and he oh yeah not bad I would like to see Emma Stevens there shove a little body herself the Northampton Defender was able to get in between there I would have liked to see Stevens kind of rush her way in there and use her body to be a little more physical on that one good play here here we go this is going to get sent up and it almost oh kept in good play there though good play there though by Stevens to come back and try to get it up Jullian Stevens is in the right spot defending and again this the back checking here of Roman has just been a Difference Maker in terms of just not giving Northampton an opportunity to get that ball and make that turn it's just been really good so far 22 minutes remaining in the first half one nothing East Long Meadow fans still filing in in their pink shirts pink hats pink bandanas pink sweatshirts pink socks you name it it's pink out night here this Long Meadow good touch there here comes mne great play there I really like that really look at this space lots of space here good try there by number eight Roman it's headed up here comes Jordan to Susa Susa chasing it down goalie comes out along with Jordan Boot It Up play [Music] good play there headed it over to the sidelines Northampton player trying to keep that in bounds just needed to turn her body use her body on that one to keep it in bounds but fortunately for Easton Meadow that didn't happen really nice play there L Kasich almost got her big right foot on it jumped up there no jumping no jumping Anna Roman I'm sure Coach P you that one along way but love the hustle back that was good really yeah I'm not so sure there this is like maybe a good note I don't think that's a call I think that she just kind of fell down I don't think that was any penalty on Lizzy Roman but I'm not sure didn't look like the referee was going to call it I think she literally just fell down and I think she hit her head on the ground hopefully she going to be all right we're going to get a little break in the action your anouncer is going to take a drink of some lemonade in his Hydro flas 20 minutes 44 seconds remaining and we will be right back more action nice display there of sportsmanship Lizzy Roman going over and shaking hands with the girl who fell on the ground and it looks like she's going to be okay not sure whether she's gonna get back into the game or not not sure really what happened whether she hit her head we to go back check it out you're always welcome we're going to get back I have a second headset this game's been good to see so far you know some of the games this year we've just seen a lot of the balls going over the sidelines and seeing you know calling throw in eam meow throw in other team throwing and this G has been played for the most part in the middle of the field so far as we're halfway through the first half liy Roman gets it she plays it up to Susa Susa plays it back to McKenney mne plays it through and it's going to come out here the goalie comes out great play by the Northampton goalie good touch there by the Northampton player Lizzie Roman just a little bit off on that one she makes her way back along with luas Ras plays it up and it's over the top Jordan over there n Hampton Play Wide Open here a lot of space not sure why she's taking so long but makes a very nice pass oh boy here we go that's a good one goalie in the right spot good play by Jillian Stevens and Lizzy Roman two on defense goalie in the right spot number 99 Juliana godette a good punt there Here Comes Kenna Marino a speedy Defender little bit hard off her foot there got out of bounds she had some space just went a little bit too hard nor Hampton's gonna get a throw in sure why they're throwing it in from so far back usually you see play is you know getting trying to get an extra 10 yards there they kind of took 10 yards off Susa has it here not tried to get it over there to Jordan this one's through that's an off sides though she was off sides by about one foot you could see it from up here in the booth it was really close but she was off sides referee in the perfect position to make that call Northampton gets a free kick so when you have an offsides penalty or any type ofen penalty the other team gets a kick sometimes it's a direct kick sometimes it's an indirect kick throws it in good throw there right to the feet this one's played up looks like Su is going to be overline girls down there they got see the ball girls down there wearing the pink bandanas they were handing out pink bandanas on your way into the stadium if you were one of the first 100 participants that walk through the door you were able to get a free bandana Northampton coach yelling out short ball pressure short ball pressure and as a result of the short ball pressure call East meow goes long ball Addie Jordan has it she's gonna play this one through to Stevens It's played through everyone's chasing it down and it goes good play by Northampton to use their speed to chase that down and get it out of bounds and set their defense back up Caroline lucich has it she throws it in right there to Emma Stevens Emma Stevens has it but it goes out of bounds and it's going to be a Northampton throw inampt again good play just a little bit hard of a touch there like that kind of touch right there really good play sneaks it through Jordan has it she's going to try to take oh good cut back tried to play it through here comes Ken maro's going to fire that one in and she just kind of lost it over the top just a little bit too hard for either Susa or looks like Sabina mne I think it was she was trying to get that one too this one's way high in the air it bounces on the ground three players going for it four players going for it lots of head balls that's a good call there by the referee number 14 white just kind of got pushed a little bit to the ground meow GNA get a free kick good call by the referee here it comes going up that ball is going to get played to Susa what a great touch right there oh a big left foot there on a volley an opportunity there she's got a great left footed shot we saw it in the last game she had a similar ball a volley like that and she put a lot of force onto it the last one was on goal the goalie had to make a great save this one just a little bit wide of its Target touch good [Music] play out going to be Roman but now it's going to be throws it up has it takes it the thigh good play there Susa has it kind of boots it across the field two players over there and Jordan ends up with it just taking takes it down the sidelines Cuts back a little bit kind of gets it to Marino who whacks it off the Northampton play out of bounds over towards the visitor stands and then he's going to throw it in is off of Addy Jordan I Believe and Al B gets it good play there into the middle of the field Cas saw that one coming Susa with some great Foot Skills there was able to get the ball and make a great pass now you got number 14 Bella white has it a little bit too hard there on that leading ball we'll call it the over the toop Chase and run has been successful with that type of play either a through ball or the Chase and run I like that play right there got getting in front of it in Cas Speed play it I'm not sure it looks like probably just going to play that that's a good play there it's GNA be B Subs are coming in number 17 Mack whitward Hanna whitward AKA Mack the goal scorer tonight number 17 getting in the game as senior Captain Addie Jordan takes a little rest on the sidelines after having played entire first half so far play this one gets bashed up here comes Susa sus is going to apply a lot of pressure and she does a good shot there by Susa way to chase it down was able to get position got a another one of those volley shots and was able to make a strong shot onto the goalie forcing the goalie to make a good save yes this is what I don't like don't like when the ball goes that far along in the air nobody from East is there plays it back over to Susa went through her legs wh we calling for it raising her hand she's gonna get an opportunity to get it here pushing and shoving gets her body into the right position out of bounds off of Northampton kind of a high throw in there by an Marino that slipped out of her hands this one also goes high and here comes ma witor pushing and shoving and out of bounds it goes looks like we are going to get a corner kick set plays as I've mentioned before seen from the announcer Booth to um have not been great this season on set plays I mean we did see a Lizzy Roman direct shot that was absolutely amazing last game but these Corner kicks like to see something out there and see somebody from eastlon meow be aggressive and get their head or foot on the ball there's a good one and there's a good one susa's been great in there and there it is I called it again Susa with the goal traps it on the belly finally happen onto the ground and into the back of the net with a strong High shot into the top of the goal Susa I believe with her first or second goal of the season but that was a doozy really good to see 10 from 11 it is Susa from Maggie Stevens who actually made a great corner kick got it out there to almost the penalty shot area Susu was the first to the ball was able to trap it quickly with her great skills put it on the ground and one touch po of with good power no chance scored by number 10 Emma Susa Thompson has it here number 11 a little bit hard on the touch but still forces the Northampton Blue Devil Defender to kick it out of bounds way down by the 10 yard line not quite sure why Lucas's gonna hang out up here but she does and she's got it it gets booted in again and oh that was meant to be a shot but whitmer's right there this almost could have been another one going to be another corner kick and here comes Stevens again I'd like to see sort of the same type of play Stevens can get one out into that area where Thompson is and where Susa is and where Jordan is and where other players are kind of hanging out it's going to give an opportunity we got really strong players there let's see what we can do let's be first it's not let it get to the ground don't like that one so much and there it is again kind of bouncing around and then it first to the ball Marino very Speedy that's off sides they knew it so they didn't play it which is great and of sneaks its way out of bounds there off of number 11 mag Stevens like after a relatively short rest Addie Jordan is g to find her way back into the game over on the sidelines getting ready to go back in and she does we're going to get hopefully a little round of applause or certainly coach is going to give a round of applause to Susa on her way out for a great play just kind of like last game you'll hear it on the announcing that's Su was really on those Corner kicks one of the only ones really that was kind of going for the ball on those Corner kicks so it was really good to see her get an opportunity there and took advantage of it hopefully that those types of plays continue as the season continues to develop Jordan over there Jordan to marino marino up off the chest of a [Applause] Northampton Flair wh were kind of challenging that ball but it's no I thought it made it way out of bounds here's number 14 believe white there in the middle gets it back again Jillian Stevens with a big one here comes Alli Thompson sticks out her right foot Northampton player kicks it off of licas and then out of bounds it's going to be yes keeps it in bounds number 15 Eve Butler making her way into the game from the middle of the field made a great play right there number 14 Bella white back to a wide open Jill Stevens who is going to send this ball a great ball there just a little wide of its Target but a good idea to get it down to the Speedy Adelaide Jordan just goes a little bit wide northon goalie's been very busy tonight got a lot of touches a lot of punts see right there I would like get come on East medal let's get right right on those balls right on those goal kicks right on those punts right on those Corner kicks good play we're almost put leg on it here it comes and it's back to Jillian Stevens who just floats down a beautiful bomb down there being chased by Addie Jordan she has it using her speed she flips it into the middle it gets flipped back out some 's gonna run this Addie Jordan's gonna run this one down again sends it back to Ken Marino Ken Marino at the 40 yard line boom over the top not sure if that's going to be off sides or not but play Yow white flips it through or tries to flip it through try to get that one over the top play by Lizzy Roman does find it way out of bounds for a Northampton throw in six minutes and 45 seconds remaining in the first half two freshman goal scorers for East Long Meadow Matt whitler and Emma Susa eastl Meadow leads the game two to zero and has really dominated the play so far I would say Northampton has had really one decent opportunity down on the uh left side of the East Long Meadow goal but the goalie there Juliana godet was in great position and was able to make really the one I would say save that I don't even know say had to make it but it was uh one save touch that out of the box was hoping that didn't happen it didn't again that play nice to get East Long Meadow on those punts and those goal kicks get them to be the first to touch it good play there here we go Bella White's got space she's going to try to take it and she does she gets it up to Jordan Jordan's going to do her patent move right down the right sideline she's being chased step for step but Jordan gets a little bit ahead she pulls it back gets it into the middle and almost an opportunity there really good defense great play by Jordan even with the ball she was able to get past her Defender and get that half step then turned it in for an opportunity for potential opportunity for whitward to put her second one in the back of the net the Northampton Defender to flex it off of her leg and out of bounds another corner kick opportunity here for East Long Meadow let's see if Stevens can get this one up in the air like she did last time that's a good one again right there and there it is good opportunity the ball is still in the middle there this is what I like to see it's still there eastl Meadow still maintaining possession up there off the head bouncing around and now it's made its way out but here comes Ken Marino she charges forward over the head down the sidelines goes Emma Stevens she's chasing it down jumps up good play keeping it in I love the fact that she's able to keep it in bounds keep it in bounds it makes its way out of bounds it's going to be an EA medal throw in it gets thrown back to lucich lucich has it he's going to swing it into the middle off the Northampton Defender head of Northampton head of licas over the top who's got it that's a tough call right there I don't think the referee was in great position to see that I could see it up here Northampton person did kick it but it did eventually make its way off up number 15 right there Eve [Music] Butler and really did Mo should have think but either way it's harmless at this point nothing happened as a result of that thankfully Hampton there was an offside or a penalty soton a kick that one goes kind of short and wide a little bit of a Mis kick there by the goalie didn't get everything on it out of bounds Northampton gonna be a play here as Subs come in number 18 Anna Roman making her way back into the game as I think yeah Eve Butler coming out of the game with some good time there in the Midfield Roman not happy with herself there on that throw in that kind of right into the belly and then she belli it out of bounds for get throw off the head it has it good there played up to Stevens another good play here Here Comes number 14 Bella white Bella white has it it's over to Jordan Jordan does a little delay step pulls it back goes to the right foot had it taken away but a good opportunity there here's Bella white again in the middle of the field she has it just puts her foot in there goes over again number 18 Anna Roman has it that'ss it out of bounds 2 minutes and 41 seconds look there like Jordan may have been able to take that one a little bit farther to the left and might have been able to sneak past but it looked like she had the also had the defender on the ground was going to try to get that one back to her right foot for her strong shot tripped it up a little bit penalty there on pushing in back star free kick flare and a Roman from the far right side at about the 20 yd line is going to try to get one and she does a beautiful shot right there a great pass into the middle just snuck off the head of a Northampton player this one comes to the middle all players are rushing back good play there I love to call it oh backing last play was really good here they come an opening there Jullian Stevens has it boots it out Roman on the sidelines chasing that down with a Northampton fla they're going to get a throw in not sure about this call kind of hard to tell it looked like Jillian Stevens had kicked that one out maybe not either way a throw in like Dy Jordan with a great play right there Li Roman taking the space she's got plenty of space she plays it through Here Comes whitler Here Comes Stevenson chasing it down it's really on Stevens at this point and of make it way out of bounds Stevens gave a good run at it we're in the last minute of the first half East Long Meadow Spartans versus the Northampton Blue Devils it is two nothing good shielding play there by the Northampton Defender to keep witor from getting in front and getting some type of opportunity and here there it is again that ball just cannot bounce on the ground like that somebody's got a charge forward and make a trap put a body on it put something on it here we go and a Roman down the sideline still moving she's moving she's grooving she's chasing 22 seconds looks like this half is going to end very harmlessly for Easton Meadow they have played a very solid game on the offensive and defensive side of the ball and we will be back for a second half of action between the Spartans and the Blue Devils and we are back for the second half Jillian Stevens there controlling the ball star Defender one of the star have so many Roman now it's up P Jordan shield and play Push it's to kick out of bounds off of a water bottle on the sidelines and a Marino lots of breast cancer awareness all over her body got a couple of tattoos there tonight on her legs pink ribbon in her hair free kick penalty on adding Jordan free kick here for North campon kind of not a good kick at all I mean you're on the sidelines over there and then you kick it down the sidelines with a right to left spin kind of looked like actually one of my golf shots where you're really aiming somewhere else and the ball just goes in a completely different direction but here we go that's a good cross great play there by the Northampton Defender as number 11 Maggie Stevens made a great right footed cross she's gonna get another opportunity I'd say two of her three Corner kicks tonight have been perfect right where you want them to be one resulted in a goal and another one resulted in an opportunity let's see what she does here this one a little bit weaker but it sneaks its way through out to the top it gets fired and into the back of the net right there I believe that that was number two Addie Jordan standing at the top of the box at the 18 and it just kind of bounced its way around and then into the goal off of another one of those kind of volley type shots she really didn't settle the ball she got it while it was in the air and drove it into the back of the net the goalie never saw it coming early opportunity forto and into the back of the net number two Addie Jordan [Music] SP and goal scored by number two Addie Jordan assisted by number 11 Maggie Stevens play here all the way back Jan Stevens now I know you hear fans at home you may hear a lot of Stevens and you might think they sisters or cousins or best friends but they're not they're none of the above they're not all related just happen to have a lot of Stevens here in eam Meadow for some unknown [Music] reason has it here moving the ball up they get it down the sidelines that is a spectacular pass But Lizzy Roman able to use her speed to get over there and knock it out of bounds so that East meow can hustle back see Anna Roman there in the sorry Maggie Maggie Stevens in the middle of the field kind of rushing back to set it up there's Anna Roman over back to her sister Liz Roman and then over the top here now you got Edie Jordan who's got it you got here it comes this would be a good one who's got this one Maggie Stevens has it a hard kick there K's got it she's got a lot of space she kind of sneaks it through oh good body play there by the Northampton Defender potentially an obstruction but the referee lets them play on I think they were both going for the ball this one is off the side of the foot and that's kind of what I like to see there somebody from Elam Meadow getting that ball before it bounces which is exactly kind of what happened there you saw finally you know mcki getting in there off that good play there takes it by Ken Marino who then hustles back and does what she does best in the event that anything bad happens she uses her speed and her ability to go back and make up for it exactly what happened there this one just kind of get Play Down has makes way to the Box picks it upal again that one kind of off the heel again let's see here that's what I like to see with keki getting being aggressive in the middle of the field and getting those punts and those goal kicks on her foot first or her head or her body it's really what we need to try to gain possession of that those 5050 balls oh there like Whitmer was going to try to make her way down the sidelines and was to hit her but it throw and this one sneaks its way through looks like it's going to be harmlessly played it's flipped out by Kenna Marino you know being chased good defense right there really good defense charging her way Anna Roman using her using her hand and her body one get of off the side of her foot look she's kind of loud you go to love that a freshman out there just kind of laughing at her mistake as she kick that one off of like her kneecap it seems like goes harmlessly out of bounds for thr trying to get that one up the sidelines Eddie Jordan just wasn't able to do it this one's though gonna make its way up the sidelines it kind of spins its way back into the field so the Northampton going to have to play Edie Jordan gets to play it off for body Stevens gets it two players in the middle whitward playing it Stevens again uses their left foot that one there just a little bit too hard like the soft lob or take it and continue to run through or maybe flip it out a little bit of a wider shot that's the one right there those goal kicks let's get on those goal kicks Julian St kind covering up a couple of mistakes there in the middle of the field you know you've seen this game I think a lot more just ball control by the Midfield players for Easton Meadow they're very comfortable passing the ball in this game they've been a lot better about passing the ball back to their Defenders when they're wide open so that they can kind of set their offense up and set up a play that's really been that's been really good to see as Ken Marino just all over Northampton player fires it up GNA bounce there off of another kneecap and out of bouns going to take a break after kind of a couple of Sprints forward Sprints backwards Sprints to the side throw it in here she does kind of right on an Roman's back yeah that's a that's a good call there I think by the referee it was a little bit more than shielding and a Roman was kind of backing into the Northampton Defender referee calls a penalty on Roman at about the 30 yard line here on the sidelines you would expect to see sort of a high feed to the middle doesn't look like actually Northampton has enough players up there to really do anything it just looks like a a field of dreams of pink back there tonight Here Comes Addie Jordan though whitw is flying Addie Jordan is flying this is open now oh just just a little bit too soft on that through ball Whitmer was open Addy Jordan was looking for it tried to get it through but was just a little bit soft on the pass and allow Northampton player to get their foot on it play Here by ten Marino boms it down the sidelines Here Comes Addie Jordan again down good passing there a little bit of like this one here try to put a foot on that look like this one the goalie is going to be coming way out here way out to about the 20 yard line here comes whitler whitler settles it down that's a very good ball right [Applause] there there by Addie Jordan like she just kind of sprinted in at the last minute and took the ball away and got a cross just over the goalie's head but just past whitler who was running in then you saw mck coming down the left side as well that tried to get in front of it but it goes out of bounds off of a Northampton player East Monto is going to get themselves a corner kick opportunity not sure who's taking this one and I just did not really love that play there a little bit too close to the goal made it very easy for Northampton to defend Here Comes two substitutes as Ali Thompson makes her way into the game along with race more getting some playing time Asic and Tech come out this one's played Short to Roman and then it's played in I do like that play a little bit it was certainly a little more successful for eam Meadow there they had the opportunity last game they tried that three times and not none of them probably the best kick of the night right there by the goie 21 Grace Moore getting some playing time there getting her head on the ball and causing Northampton to commit a foul and a penalty this one's over to Roman Roman just blasts it up kind of getting its way through coming down the sidelines is number 23 Thompson who forces Theon Flair to kick it out of bounds gonna get a throw in down around the five yd line as Susa one of the Freshman goal scores tonight making her way back into the game as ma whitler makes her way out get a little breather good play here this one's going to get fed in and oh good opportunity there a really good kick by Roman got that one on goal I liked it it was driven really hard got a little bounce in there taking it wide going to take her on oneon-one she puts it in the midle that's a good one there just a little bit too hard on the touch by Bella White had an opportunity Jullian stud fighting for Here Comes SS going to try to chase that one down Northampton player shielded sus so well and ball was kicked off of an East MD play Jan Stevens theine get a goal kick trap there good play this one's flipped up that flip is good this is oh oh really good opportunities there you saw the fans standing up I saw number 23 Mama Thompson standing up as Alli Thompson had a chance right there in front of the goal the goalie for Northampton is the star of the game so far for no ho as she just denied three great opportunities great shots by East Long Meadow players Addie Jord had an opportunity looked like number 14 Bella White had an opportunity Ali Thompson had an opportunity all of which came back has no goals Here Comes Thompson again using her speed forces the Northampton fla to move that one along some good passing right here by Northampton defended well 18 and a Roman kicks up looks like this one is going to be taken by Alli Thompson Alli Thompson gets it back we're going to have a penalty here this is uh this is a Lizzy Roman Special you had one of these in the last game and it was probably the best direct pick that I have seen from the girls Squad in years last time this one a little bit farther out the last one was around the 10 or 15 yd line this one I think might be a little bit too far but she is going to ran she does drive it in the back of the net again it is not to a home run kick she has found her range on those direct kicks in the offensive zone that is two in a row backto back clearly she has been working on that I have not seen that before till the last two games East takes the lead four nothing on a direct kick into the goal by Lizzie Roman and absolutely beautiful shot we're going to see number four AA Mendes come into the game as Ken Marino number nine takes a break gives some high scor unassisted by number eight [Applause] Li experienced player getting some extra time tonight night East meow takes the lead a bad throw in there but out of bounds off of East Long Meadow to make their way down the field here on throws looks like Susa has it she plays it back this one comes over Susa has it again she's going down the middle she is moving she is moving just a little bit too hard there on that pass the right idea I would like to see her maybe take a little more space before she went for it but a little bit hard on the pass and again that one there just cannot hit the ground first on these B kicks you just got to be first to the ball go plays up it's Bing Bang Boom it's just get booted around St on the defense it's being covered Chas down Sidelines it's going to get shielded and it does get Shield that's going to be a goal kick play there by the East Long medal Defender number seven Emma Stevens makes her way into the game as senior Eddie Jordan takes a little break is going to get a little rest it's a it's a long week here for East LA meow they had a game on Monday night here uh they have a game tonight obviously on Wednesday tomorrow night they play West Springfield in West Springfield and then they're going to have another game on Saturday so it's nice to see players are going to need a little bit of rest Megan getting some rest tonight after little bit of an injury in the last game just gonna rest that one up other players getting some rest Marino fresh for hard charging play there by Butler thrown in by Mendes good there Here Comes Butler now sus has it got kind of caught up on that's a little bit of a weird call there on number 17 I didn't see much there from up here in the booth rep obviously has a better angle but uh follow on number 17 trying to defend this one here from 30 yard let's see if Roman can put this one in the back of the neck well she puts everything she's got into it and it does I really enjoy that I enjoyed watching that shot and also really likes number seven Emma Stevens getting her head on the ballal being first on those free kick great to see hard to see here it's be number Anna Roman taking her right foot she's GNA get a right footed swinger away from the goalie it's a low liner not sure if that's oh this is beautiful absolutely after blasted into the back of the net I'm gonna make the call on that one I believe that is senior Defender Lizzy Roman with her second goal of the game but we'll have to wait to see from the referee exactly what happened there but I think that's how that worked out a really nice pass and then her experience no rush on that one settled the ball down got it onto her right foot and then really just blasted it as hard as she could right at the Go 11 on the assist assist this one goes over the top Here Comes Emma is gonna try to trace that one down go out me is going to get way down in the offensive zone this half has been absolutely dominated by entire half the ball has been played seems like played on this half of field stting a little break right now on the sidelines Spartan goals the second goal for second goal of the game number eight Lizzie Roman 21 assisted by number 11 Maggie Sten again she's trying to settle it down here on the turf she does she gets it over to number 15 E Butler just gets it taken away but look at the hustle the hustle on these East metal players even up five nothing they're going for it good play there by a Mendes has it again plays it back to number 21 Grace Moore Grace Moore gets it it's flipped up good play she's getting her body in front comes a men running down the sideline she's got it she's good play there to try to get it off the Northampton Defender but it just missed hitting the back of her foot so northampton's gonna get the throw in oh I really like that play by Emma Stevens blast it up going through here comes settled in [Music] here a low ler needed to turn that hip a little bit and go far post but a good got some good leg on that find playing time East Long Meadow up five nothing at this point good defense right there number 15 getting that ball Butler making a run she's got it hered she Tri to pass it over but it goes a little bit wide out of bounds see number 12 in there Lina belli right on the line sticking right on this Northampton FL goes a little bit over her head but no problem whatsoever for East me boots it out of bounds getting another throw in telli right there up front that one gets kind of chucked down the sidelines it's going to get shielded here by Roman as the ball goes over the end line I believe it's going to be a goal kick really nice play Hey making her way back into the game and a Roman GNA get a little breather girls really need to hydrate they got another game tomorrow this one play through this is fired up [Music] aggressive play there by Grace Moore Oh I like this here Stevens good one touch there this is that was a really good ball call there on the penalty kind of reached her hand out a little bit ball was going to be too far down in the offensive zone to see if it's going to be a neutral or Advantage fall there by the referee call penalty on Susa with a kick 18 minutes remaining five nothing great play Eve Butler way to get your head on that free kick sua settles it down Shields it well she's gonna take it moves it back to her left foot swings it over to mnei but just a little bit too far ends up in the on the feet of a wide open East I mean Northampton Flair ball comes across played back Susa Stevens to mne mne they call it gets Advantage Lizzie Roman holding down the defense with Grace Moore and Lena berelli this one gets played right up to Stevens off of her foot tries to get it over to Thompson Hampton Flair picks it up sends it up but just a little bit too far before she turned it up field and made its way out of bound throw in here by like men tumbling tumbling tumbling little elbows not elbows just a little push and shov kick Hampton kicked up good play there by Eva a to Thompson Thompson to the middle he Butler gets it susa's got it sus is GNA try to play and she does she gets it over here to Stevens Stevens has it she turns it on her foot she gets it up again oh just bounced over the foot of Eve Butler who was in the right spot to play it good play here need a little touch oh little bit just a little bit too hard a good try just went a little bit too far ahead was outside the range of Thompson and Susa five nothing East Long Meadow 15 minutes and 45 seconds remaining in the game in this running time game been absolutely dominated here in the second half by East Long Meadow for sure the first half was also dominated by East Long Meadow Northampton had a couple of opportunities decent opportunities nothing great um but it's been all I mean oh that's a hand ball we have to go it's not it's kind of harmless at this point here we go mne has it she's using her speed she's going up she's just GNA take oh she's GNA take it good defense there by Northampton Roman over to Menses has it Thompson's got it she's coming around she's going to take it around the field Susa has it sus is coming here she tries to get that through to number 15 Butler a to but Emma a here [Applause] Butler Butler had an opportunity there need to get a little quicker on that first step but good B the aim kick it out of bounds Lena belli here on throw in number 12 right there she does she sees Susa see it like it wanted kicks it out of bounds good play there by sus to force the Northampton Flair to kick it out of bounds that East meow could get get another kick it's been really a much different game on the direct kicks uh in this game and it's been great to see it's number 13 Jillian Stevens makes her way back into the game along with number five so number five looks like Jillian Stevens usually our Center back is going to get some offensive opportunities here she's going to take the corner kick let's see how aggressive oh that's a good one there it's just swung a little maybe a little bit too far out wide but look at that speed of look at the speed of men's all the way back really good playing there we go good play good play by Lena belli to get her get her foot in there and the hustle back on defense oh here we [Music] [Applause] go come on thompon oh really good speed shown there by Thompson the fire on through there the goalie came out and made a great player I think Thompson might have put that one in the back of the net to give meow a six nothing lead but it goes out of bounds off of Northampton Flair and now Isam meow's gonna get a throw in AA men down there gonna get that throw in looking for an open flare she finds one in Thompson but it goes kind of off of her Shin a little bit East Low touches it there's a left footed shot gets headed out here comes mne who had it now it's Susa using her using all her Foot Skills tries to get it over there techne has it sends it back good play here Here Comes brelli relli has it that's a good ball there get played Thompson has it gets played over this is going to be a volley shot left left and Fir good try there got left play that thing exactly how I think she should have from up here in the kind like a little spake with that big right foot got it over to the left foot it wasn't as strong of a shot I'm sure she would have liked but it was the right play got it low made the goalie have to make another good save 5 nothing East Long Meadow 11 minutes and 45 seconds has been all SP get played wide Here Comes number two for Hampton getting chased down good play there they had a little two Defenders with berelli and Grace more defending that left footed shot forcing that bad kick right there number five has it stays on her feet and there's a big boot right there by belli Thompson running down the left hand lane good play Ava men's way to charge that one in oh it's touched Here Comes Thompson now she's got it now she's going to fire it in big kick there really good shot off the left foot good save there by the [Music] goalie but a really good opportunity for East for uh easta medal there as Thompson took it down the lane made got it on her on her big left foot and took a nice shot play there up here comes Stevens is going to run after that one there's kind of kicked off the shin get flipped over caught by FL on the bench tough one there play up there it comes here comes Thompson she's got it there tries to flip it out maybe just a little too far out or you got to drive that one flip it over there to but K's just been great in the middle of the field on these punts she's just been one of the few eastl medal players who's just been first to that Ball's been great on the corner kick portion of it Tech's been great on [Music] the play there by berelli kind of bodying up good play there by Emma Stevens this one's kind of sent along it's a little bit of spin on the ball goes out of bounds some East Long Meadow girls soccer fans walking past with their free bandanas on for white out I'd say white out but it's really pink out mate B aggressive play there by Grace Moore but just a little bit too much it was 21 on 21 push him the back and get a free kick here for Northampton not sure what's happening try get this down the line arm up here it comes make it makes it way in and flies out of bounds gonna get a sub Addie Jordan sneaking her way back into the game after a well deserved long rest take a rest here probably for the rest of the game I'm sure this coach knows they've got a lot of games coming up here for the rest of the week so trying to get players rested when you've got kind of this nice comfortable lead number 12 getting some words of wisdom from her mom down below that little ball was an arm but what a difference I mean even when you see like now you're seeing even you know not not necessarily all the starters aren't necessarily in the game but the back checking has been just really I think the difference between what I saw at the beginning of the season and what I'm seeing now from the from the Midfield play from the offense players not standing around watching they're going to that it's really that [Music] was beautiful fake the pass back got defend

historic games in their American rivalry series they awarded the player of the game award to quarterback Noah Seeley and helped Sharon ASB pass up T-shirts to Lucky members as a crowd which I've noticed sometimes gets them louder than any touchdown will the Pep Squad held our Junior cheer camp program where we paired up with younger avusd students from grades kindergarten through fifth grade the girls learn two dances and three cheers and perform with us during third quarter at our Thursday night game last week it was a blast and we love helping inspire young girls and practice our making a difference ASB has been hard at work hosting the super fun 50s diner themed back to school dance Powder Puff where the class of 2024 one for our second year in a row and Color Run where we got covered in every color of the rainbow and raised money for organizations all over campus another event that we've put a lot of effort into this year is Hispanic Heritage Month which comes to a close this week to kick it off we hosted the band groupo 760 who performed for us during passing periods and lunch featuring one of our own Sun Devil students it was amazing to have live music and see our community twirling and dancing in Sun Devil's Circle then we celebrated the next two Wednesdays with crafts and food students made flower headbands inspired by Frida kahlo's self-portraits as well as papel picado which is a traditional Mexican tissue paper art decorating a friend as for Diego after school students and staff enjoyed tacos iOS Fresca's and sweet ice cream treats we're hosting two prepare for something Apple Valley High School excels at skillsusa we've had such great success in the past and we can't say can't wait to see what this year holds there are so many exciting things happening at Apple Valley high school and I want to thank all of you for your continued support we couldn't give our students any of these incredible opportunities without you please enjoy restful and restorative fall break and thank you for your time foreign California School Employees Association Nicholas Garrett Alabama unified Association Karen savers comments superintendent Trinity Nelson maybe maybe we might go on the mic Will Go On I know it's hard to follow the students and the phenomenal presentations that they do even a first time at it you did a wonderful job Phoenix Academy rocked it um I know that we talked about the Bell remaining at Apple Valley high school but I did show up at a county meeting in jeans and my bell shirt and the superintendent from Victor Union was there not in green and I razzed him in front of the entire San Bernardino County superintendents of all the school districts about how he should be representing he did show up at the game in a green polo so we did take pictures so it was a good sport but I had tried to stop at Victor Union district to go take a picture with one of our board members who was secretly wearing orange in front of a Victor High sign and I thought it would be fun to get my picture with her but we I got called back to the district on my way back from the meeting and so I couldn't do it but there is a photo evidence I've seen it and I'll let her share about that later um Mr RC and I attended the Patriot Day at Rio Vista School Sergeant Sean strubing with the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department was the MC uh Jennifer Debarr played Amazing Grace on the bagpipes which some of our kids have never experienced that it was a little bit touching to me they thought they were alumni from the same graduating class of Glendora High School that I was um it wasn't I was older than they were but we had a tie there and it was wonderful to have her up in the desert and playing for us um Glendora the um our own Tim eckstrand he's a retired school psychologist also got up and saying bring him home and then all of our fire police and military were up on the stage to represent and to be there for Patriot Day um Sergeant Street being taught the the kids that a story about this means I love you but that a child that lost his voice and and just because of a disability that he would always say he loved them until he couldn't say it anymore and then he did this and said I love you too which so the whole crowd was waving their fingers forward so if you see me at some point do that to you and wave I'm not being weird it's just what I do so we've we all kind of picked it up um been able to be out at the schools and watching girls tennis at both high schools and volleyball Mast was they did their Academy inductions in the month of September vbc is currently collaborating with Apple Valley Unified School District to Pilot a work experience program that is not offered at other school districts right now and though the fingerprinting issue that we've been dealing with for our CTE programs may get resolved soon we're excited that this may be a collaboration that we can continue uh this we have been working on the facilities master plan and um we had meetings in the district a couple weeks ago with Eric Hall and Associates we had lots of participants it gave great information about what needed to happen on each School site to make improvements for what this school serves and then um today we had our initial meeting I'm looking at Mr Bender for the Granite Hills High School group to meet with the Architects regarding the facilities for um a stadium and so it was a small starting group and then as they moved forward to bring in the community um they have at least heard what the the coaches and administrators and athletic directors have as an interest for that facility um Vanguard wait list is now live online families have the ability to see where they stand something that has been long in the making and I appreciate Bethany Thompson he's a teacher on assignment in digital learning and also a Vanguard teacher teaching French to our middle school students um and she she took what we asked her to do and made it run so it's live today we have we'll we definitely will have a few questions people that are associated as members of the school district on the waiting list need to be tagged appropriately and and kids that have siblings are already tagged and then um we are participating in what's called a community engagement initiative we apply to be part of it it has to be do with Community Schools and it is a Statewide Endeavor districts were selected and were one of just a few in San Bernardino County and this will cause the team to grow and both unions have been invited as far as the presidents they may select somebody to send in their place but we believe abuta will participate as I'm Karen Savers being the president and Nick Garrett is very interested as well this will also include a member from the town of Apple Valley it'll include parents and students they are once they commit there are eight sessions this year three of which are virtual the other five are in a location we are assigned Anaheim Union High School District as our partner they have already they're ahead of us in the community schools Endeavor and they will help us to work through the next steps and then you heard that Phoenix was at avci tonight but it's a joint venture for Phoenix Academy students and Sandia students for their family stem night so they're all over there together enjoying all of the things and then you know how I love little kids and what they say the best part of schools I'm going to finish with a quote from Beckett Kylie's first grade son hey Mom the do called they want my artwork we did call we did want their artwork he just happens to be in a class after school elop where his artwork was selected and it's up here in the district office so I just say that because these after school programs are impacting children all over the place and you've heard about the clubs and the different things um they matter we're glad they're happening and we appreciate the staff and students that are participating not just the staff and students but the student workers that are participating as well thank you thank you board comments Rick sure thank you well jazlyn Ismail Hannah and Sophia good job as always Ismail you said you were nervous but you did really good so you've got a bunch more to go so by the end of this school year you're gonna be an Old Pro with this so I'm gonna keep watching this so good job and Sophia I know you probably didn't have anything to do with painting The V on Hospital Hill orange but it got a lot of it got a lot of play on social media there so it looked really good so when I went to Apple back in the 70s we used to do the same thing so keep the tradition going and as we listened to superintendent Nelson um there's a lot of great things going on in the district and um I just want to thank everyone for their their good work and a shout out to our our Police Department as well we had a report in closed session on all the calls for service that they've been handling and uh it's it's overwhelming but it's um great to hear that um we have a good safe Community for the schools so I want to just say thank you to that and that's all I have Mr President thank you very good okay Amanda all right thank you um yes I could definitely see the V turn orange from right outside my classroom I watched it throughout the day and then it slowly started to turn white and then the green came back by the end but um I did send a text because in the morning she texts me and she's like I want to see pictures and I said why do I feel like I'm breaking the law um because I was out there like I I drove in and I'm like at the stadium trying to Quick take pictures um by myself which yeah selfies in the morning um but I got it there was evidence I posted it um I'm gonna read the first part here so I did want to wish all of the principals happy National principles month I did recently read an article that was called uh how principles affect students in schools and the Wallace group was looking back at two decades of research I know this is gonna be boring but they determined that the impact of an effective principle has likely been understated in fact the impacts are likely both greater and broader than previously believed greater in the impact on student achievement and broader in affecting other important outcomes including teacher satisfaction and retention and student attendance and reductions in exclusionary discipline all of this to say that we are very grateful to have each of the principles that we do here in Apple Valley and thank you for all that you do for your students your staff and your families so thank you and happy National principals a month um I did want to give a shout out to Emily um so she is on the custodial team over at Rio Vista so but she is such a joy and I just have to give a little story so like let me go right here she um the host kind of exploded on her and it was like all over and it was a cold windy day and she just had the biggest smile on her face as she uh she just kind of handed me her phone and was like can you just take a picture of me so I can send this and just say like this is this is my day and but she was just she had a smile on her face and she kept going and she was just such a joy she's always so happy whenever I see her um working but that I usually see her on Sunday um over at City mall but she's just always so happy um anyway and then I did have one thing that I wanted to ask about and I I apologize because I did mean to ask last meeting but at our June 1st meeting we had the discussion about the ethnic studies toolkit task force and I know Mr RC had brought that one forward and then we voted for it or we had the voting item at the next one and I know we had requested that there be the development of the um Community piece and that we kind of get that team started at least get an interest list going and perhaps get that reported back like the first month of school but have we started a community interest list have we gotten that like at least the community piece coin I know like no you have the board Workshop when we return the week from October break and then that group will work with us to build the community um that they are going to lead this after you have been trained in order to help build the community okay so we're not even starting you're not at least getting a group of who wants to participate community-wise because like I know we don't need us all to participate but if if the direction of the board is for me to start that I'll do that I just was waiting until you had heard about the toolkit so that we were sure that we were going to continue down that pathway and that we had the them as the county leading this they have committed to doing it and so I wanted you to be trained first and then we would start that process okay but if you'd like me to start Gathering names I'm more than willing to ask principals to we can put something together with Zoe and get something going okay no I knew that we were getting like an overview as the board I just wasn't sure yeah I thought there was also like the community piece for the task force side so I had written down that we were reporting out at the end at least by the end of the school year what the outcomes that we had reached at that point so if I need to readjust the timeline I'm more than willing to do that okay that was it then thank you okay Gary just want to commend the students and the teachers and the staff around the Apple Valley district for so many outstanding activities going on this past month uh for Mrs Lasko and her staff at Mariana Mrs Heitman and her staff at Sitting Bull just want to say congratulations on the outstanding after school programs and elective programs that have been instituted there a wide array of enrichment classes things like cooking and on there there's one of my favorites Auto graphic design cosmetology I mean there's there's such a wide variety of classes being offered that I know are really a blessing in enriching our students so congratulations and thank you for Mrs Garrett and her staff at Desert Knowles Mr Clark and his staff at yakaloma Mr Cranston and his staff at Rancho Verde just want to commend your schools for your emphasis on attendance obviously students aren't going to be doing very well if they're not in in on campus in class so just thank you for your leadership in emphasizing attendance also for emphasizing um the reading interventions I know so many of our students are being a helped in their reading skills by all the various intervention programs that are going on throughout the district so I just want to call out some of those programs that I had a chance to visit for Mrs Watt and her staff at Sandia just want to commend you for the outstanding Carrabba of corroboration and camaraderie among the staff for the music program that's uh newly been started there as well as the new AG program that's been started there congratulations on that for Mrs Martinez and her staff at Vanguard I just want to say congratulations for the success of your dual immersion program which is such a valuable support for our English Learners and congratulations to your staff for receiving that stem Grant which you're already using to improve your stem classroom your lab room there for Mrs White uh and and or her staff at Phoenix thank you for your successful stem assembly and it's it's so great as a former science teacher to see so much emphasis on science technology engineering and Mathematics and then as our Representatives mentioned for the the new technology G the new clubs that are being started that started there as well at Phoenix for Mrs Benitez at Sycamore Rocks and Mrs Poff at Rio Vista just want to commend the outstanding the school culture the mutual respect among the staff and the students and again as as a superintendent Nelson noted um just want to say thank you for for Mrs Poff for hosting the 911 memorial the Patriots Day you know it's it's been said that you know on that day are our First Responders that all gave some but some gave all and that's that's something we should we should definitely remember and that's something we should definitely pass on to to our students and I was so impressed by the behavior of all those students there at Rio Vista they were so attentive and so respectful and so honoring of what that day represented so that's a real testimony to the teachers to parents and the students to Mr Goodrow at uh Apple Valley just wanted to thank you for for showing me around and I commend you for you and your staff for the successful implementation of your new I know this is not a problem on your schools but a cell phone policy uh they've been very successful in in instituting a cell phone policy which is beginning to get a handle on that as well as a tardy policy as an Old Timer it is nice to see students running to class when there's when there's 60 seconds left it's nice to see them not just dawdling the class but actually making a an effort to get to class on time so Mr Goodrow and your staff thank you for your your uh leadership in that area I also want to commend us Apple Valley students Isabella Azevedo Trinity Cisneros Natalie de Leon Matt Renteria as well as Grant Hill students Aiden Conrad Connor Faber and Hayden rice for achieving National Hispanic recognition awards given by the college board for these students for their outstanding academics so congratulations to the students at your uh at your site and thank you for your leadership in those areas and also visiting around the schools so many of our schools are participating in the Big Smiles dental program where our students are are being offered dental services that they may well not have had the opportunity to to have you know by by other means so many of us do hundreds and hundreds of our students are being served by that program so thank you to superintendent Nelson and all the rest of the staff that have that have a role in that that's really ministering to a lot of students here on our campuses so um just just really really big so much going on around the district that the students the staff the parents administrators have a lot to be proud of so thank you very much I want to make mine brief um thank you so much for coming out on a Wednesday I know that we usually have this on a Thursday but I I thank all of you for making the time to come out on a Wednesday but I'm going to start with the bell game um I went to the bell game I know nothing about the game I know absolutely nothing about games but I was truly truly lucky to sit right next to coach Martin and so he pushed me along to tell me how many yards is this how come we are getting 10 every time and he's explaining it to me so it was a great experience to sit next to an an icon to tell me how this game works because I found myself cheering for the wrong team and he says no it's the wrong team and so I had to learn real quickly sitting in the on the sideline Phoenix Academy I am thrilled if you if I can't begin to explain to you um many many years ago I brought Club live to this District many many years and I took kids on trips um and I have relationships built through that as a matter of fact there is a football coach at Apple Valley High School who remembered me I didn't remember him but he remembered that I pulled him out and gave him opportunity through Club life so keep at it because Club life is a place for those kids who you normally will not remember but somebody out there wants to be of service to them so do all you can I still have some Club life stuff so I'm going to bring it over and drop it off to you uh thank you to Walmart for their donations those donations are really helpful when we do a kitchen or food giveaway we don't want to forget that they would really help they are always helpful sending us stuff so that we may give to our community um and I I'm going to switch gears a little to um show my gratitude to two groups of people that we usually tend to um kind of think that they are you know they just do what they do my gratitude is to this cabinet sitting here um because they wake up every morning and they come out to serve and we don't we expect them to serve um but I'm grateful that you are able to do what you do and most of them have been on this campus since uh 6 30 in the morning seven o'clock in the morning including the superintendent and they stay until everybody leaves so thank you so much for your selfless service to our district and the other group that I we tend to forget are the custodial staff they do such an outstanding job when you come on our campuses you find it really clean um and whatever supplies you need in your classrooms or in your in your office they make sure that you have it my gratitude to all of you um I hope you all have a restful uh fall break and we'll see you when you return thank you so much thank you a word you seniors um 25 of your senior year is gone Ishmael I know you felt bad you lost your place train of thought don't worry our president does it all the time and um police report was really good tonight it shows how we're really uh a student-based Administration teachers and everybody to help with food clothes physical needs anything they need it's really uh really rewarding they see the other side of education kids that are living in really a lot worse than you guys are at this time you students can go home hit the books get that last 25 done have a good one that's good you do a good job we're getting better all the time but you don't know what hey you know what you'll get it my boy did the same thing he'll tell you my boy is yeah he's he's off the chart now oh my God yeah he's a he's a director with a Bill Gates Foundation yeah makes a big bugs okay we're gonna roll this on we're gonna have a Maria the clerk read any action that was taken in closed session um the board deliberations expulsion case number one 2324.

I'll Now call to order the special Board of Education meeting um and workshop for the chica school district for October 4th 2023 it is now 5: PM uh could we please stand for the flag salute Al righty uh if there are any board members that have announcements now is the time to provide those I guess it won't hurt to announce the Ammon B date again which is next weekend right the 13 13 yeah thank you it's at pv's Asgard yard Stadium okay thank you any other announcements seeing none we'll move to item three consent calendar um are there any public comments on consent calendar oh yes there are actually um so we can take public comments from um the consent calendar uh we have Sean Mossman signed up okay do you know um which item soorry thank you thank you okay so seeing no additional um public comments for consent calendar are there any um board members that would like to pull an item from consent okay um then in that case do we have a motion I'll move the consent calendar I'll second that motion okay we have a motion by Mr tennis and a second by Miss Robinson um I will say it wasn't um a point to need to pull an item or anything like that but um the only thing that I I had a question for District staff on with the consent calendar was that there are the um the site plans for um uh for safety School site safety um very good comprehensive plans um and I just had a couple questions about um sort of broader um evacuation type um and like wildfire Readiness um I feel like the this community doesn't necessarily put enough stock in Wildfire Readiness and so I just had some questions from the district on that and um uh there there may be a little additional information coming um about that later on so thank you um okay so we will take a vote um it's our first vote of the night so we'll do roll call vote um we'll start with Mr Lando Lando I tenis I Dolby I Robinson I Conan I all right um it passes 5 Z and we will move on on to item number four our board Workshop uh this is informational the topic is physical education dress code and locker room privacy thank you president Doby I'll be bringing up Mr Pedro caldero to do the presentation along with some teachers that we have um for tonight's presentation again as you guys know um Mr kalar is now our new director of secondary and this is his first work shop presentation so here we take it easy on me just so you guys know like you said this is my first one maybe not the first time up here in front of the Schoolboard but definitely my first presentation so um as we go through these slides and I give you guys some information with regards to PE and grades and dressing down and safety uh please know that um I'm hoping that you all allow me to go through all the slides and then ask questions afterwards at which point I will have uh two teachers also join me Carrie mcgar from Marsh and Mr Lawrence Taylor from Chico high school as well as our Secondary School site principles the junior high and the high schools I'd like to go over the um state and federal mandates so the very first thing is all students in grades 7 to 12 must receive a minimum of 400 minutes of physical education instruction every 10 school days and that's per education school code local school boards May exempt students from any two years of physical education in grades 10 11 or 12 since July of 2007 students must pass the physical performance test administered in grade nine to receive the two-year exemption and that's also per Education Code if Exempted students must be provided a variety of physical education elective courses there are some federal mandates with this uh High School physical education courses uh content must include instruction in each of the content areas so you will see the effect of physical activity upon dynamic dynamic Health mechanics of body movement individual SD Sports gymnastics tumbling team sports Rhythm dance and then one of my favorite combative sports like wrestling dress code policies so for middle schools all students and this is true for high schools as well and as Al will share all students are required to dress down for PE students can purchase PE clothing from the student store or bring their own from home or use cusd provided PE close for high schools all students are also required to dress down for PE students can purchase PE clothing from the students stores bring their own from home or use C the USD provided PE close the our Lea requirements are as follows each local Education Agency needs to establish a PE dress policy for its District it is appropriate for students to change their clothes for Hygiene safety and movement efficiency and for efficiency purposes keep that in mind because that's going to come up later on cusd requirements AR 5132 the principal or designate May impose dress requirements to accommodate the needs of special school activities physical education classes athletic activities and other extracurricular or co-curricular activities and student here's here's one for our students because I know as a uh the principal at chicao Jr we always have students why can't we wear hats well guess what you can students shall be allowed to wear some protective clothing including but not limited to hats for outdoor use during the school day as per Education Code what does dressing down mean so when students come in what is really required them for both Junior highs and high schools is as follows changing into athletic clothes and shoes that allow the student to move freely and to participate in the activity this can be School PE this can be a School PE uniform or athletic clothing similar to school colors and or it could also be just changing out of your clothing your school clothing and changing into a t-shirt Andor shorts Andor sweatpants PE grading policies for dressing down also keep this in mind because later on I'm going to show you guys some grades and then we're going to start going oh my gosh why why is that that doesn't make sense so Middle School three out of 10 participation points for suit cuts that means not dressing down uh Bidwell Jr has minus5 out of 10 for not dressing down loner clothes are provided to all students wanting to change or needing to change if that is what it is laner clothes are the following clothes that are provided to our students are the school PE uniform and if student doesn't have uh the PE uniformer close one is provided to them to change sorry Pedro I have to break your rule of not interrupting you okay that's fine it's been every slide so far but I've been taking notes instead um just for clarification because the bullet I don't think is clear enough to anybody who maybe hasn't had this discussion already where it says three out of 10 daily participation points for suit cuts that that means that three points out of 10 are taken away that is correct not that they are getting three points correct okay thank you all right high schools same thing uh they lose three out of 10 points for not dressing down uh those are participation points for suit cuts at Chico high right now it's four out of 10 they will lose four out of 10 points for not dressing down all Ed guess what they don't have to deal with it they don't have locker rooms at all dead and so they do not lose points for dressing down parents are informed of old options at back to school night via the Course Des uh expectation sheet and then here's the big one is can a student fail PE for not wearing standardized uh Apparel under educ ation uh sorry Education Code 49066 section c States the following no grade of a of a pupil participating in a physical education class however may be adversely affected due to the fact that the pupil does not wear standardized physical education apparel where the failure to wear such apparel arises from circumstances beyond the control of the pupil so that means that if a student for some reason cannot dress down that's based out out of his control that student cannot fail PE so why do we dress down one it creates a mindset that you are ready to exercise two athletic shoes for safety right you can't play basketball in sandals well I mean technically you could but if it falls off you can fall and hurt yourself physical movement hindered by certain clothes of course if you're wrestling in jeans that could be very difficult or if you're doing any sort of acrobatics that could also be very difficult uh although I can say that the new genes that they make today are extremely elastic uh hygiene that's also important all students have the same uniform and by that meaning all students look to have the uniform and and it creates a team feeling and setting by staying in their school clothes students are less productive because they become concerned with ruining their school clothes that is a concern that comes down PE grades I don't know hopefully this visual is good for you guys or you guys have it on your Chromebooks as well okay excellent just know that this reflects the l cap and uh so we have the following we have all students and it goes by C or higher so at the you you look at the top 92 .5% of our students and this is all Secondary School sites minus Fairview so uh that's an important thing to know uh grades 6 through 12 so 92.5% of our students have a grade C or higher we're going to go into deeper detail here with us in a second uh 4.2% of the population of all our students have a d and then 3.2% have an F Foster youth you can see that right there that's pretty high uh where you see the amount of students that are passing they're at 79.2% that are passing that have a c or higher 8.3 have a d and of course 12.5% of them have a enough as you go through you will see homeless social uh economic disadvantage student with disabilities africanamerican American Indian SL uh Alaskan native Asian Filipino Hispanic and I'm going to use the term Latino native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander white and then two or more races I'm going to give you a couple minutes to look at that because I'm sure you'll have questions for us in a bit when does your AIT start you said we'd have questions in a bit yeah yeah yeah you'll have questions here we're we're almost halfway through so we'll wait yes if you could thank you all right okay I am going to go to the next slide now here's the grade distribution at the top you will see Bidwell Junior High School the A's category you have 826 students or 85.3% of that population that got A's if you recall from the previous slide they also had a uh Point sorry they could lose five points for not dressing down they had the highest loss of points for not dressing down yet they have the highest a total and if you scoot on over to the F category you see the lowest amount of FS which is I'll be honest I didn't expect that I was a chico Jr last year I was like what what's he doing over there so then you have Chico Jr which is next and we have a you know Chico Jr has a uh you lose three points for not dressing down uh 51.1% of our student population received an a if you look over to the F side 31 received FS March Jr 533 or 71.3% of the population received A's you look far over to the right 5% receive deaths or sorry five of them receive deaths PV 437 students received A's 16 received FS which is 2 or 2% of the population right ch go High School 334 received days and you look to your right 72 or 10% of the population received deaths in total 2,589 students or roughly 63.2% of our student population received days and 128 students or roughly 3.3% of the population receive deaths I want to go over locker room procedures because it's important to understand what this looks like the Bell Rings it's the beginning first period students run to the locker room or walk to the locker room students go into the locker rooms to change they are given five minutes to do the following they have to open up their lockers they change into their PE clothes they lock those lockers or before they put their stuff in their locker then lock them they then then they confirm they are all meeting for roll call they usually that is posted in the front of the locker room and then they line up for roll call at the end of the period students go to into the locker rooms and change they're also given five minutes they open up their lockers they change into their school clothes and then they go to the waiting area for the belter ring all schools all sorry all middle schools and high schools have a a designated wearing waiting area because what we don't want is students disrupting other classes when they change out early we have safety concerns from our teachers these are the items that make things difficult the first one supervision issues arise when some students dress and some students do not so it creates what that means is the following say you have three students in a class that are not dressing down those students go straight to that activity site that could be inside the gym or on the blacktop those students May remain unsupervised while the teacher is inside supervising those that are changing now what happens is as teachers as they decide or as the uh students are changing you have more students going out towards the black top right when you have the vast majority of them going out towards the black top then you have your teacher following them there might be some students left behind that is something that also happens and I think it's important to note in a second or actually the next one I'll discuss why that is why that happens supervision also has an issue when we have teachers who are on prep let me explain say you have um a teacher that teaches uh periods out of six periods and their prep period is first period and they're in the boy's locker room but that male PE teacher is out so that PE class is very difficult or very difficult to supervise so what administrators do is try to find somebody usually the campus supervisor to be present while the students change Andor try to find coverage another way and that happens in both the boys and the girls locker room another issue that becomes very difficult and I think that's a very perfect slide is and there's going to be some additional pictures to provide supervision within the locker room is the actual configuration of those locker rooms I equated to the following you guys go shopping in Safeway or Walmart or you name it any type of Superstore and they're huge aisles you can never see the other people on the other aisles it's impossible it's very difficult you can even go to the end and you cannot see behind them the way the locker rooms are built supervision becomes very difficult but you also got to recall when they were addition when they were initially built they were also built for privacy so that students couldn't see on the other side so it's very interesting dilemma they created privacy by creating these walls if you will and not being able to see beyond them but it also created supervision issues the other problem is out of date locks so what I mean by that is the following do you guys remember when I said you have some students left behind in the locker room and then the teacher is following the other students out to the blacktop or to the gym what happens is you have students because of the outdated locks having difficulty trying to open them they may forget the combo locks or even worse this does happen you have have students because they are the I guess removable locks meaning that they're not attached and I will show you here in the next Slide the student will take off that lock find it funny go put it on another lock and so when you have a student trying to unlock their own lock they can't do it so now you have your teacher trying to figure out whose lock it is to help them open it so that they can be out on the black top on time for roll call while the students are out there and the rest of the teachers in PE are trying to cover very difficult other issue is of course cell phone and cameras or the cameras on the cell phones very difficult now you guys all know that you know we have Tik Tok social media which plays a vast I mean it's important in the lives of our students at the same time it's a danger in the lives of our students because quite frankly they don't have the maturity level um to be able to make the best decisions when when you have you know when they turn on their phone inside the locker rooms things are going to happen so supervision is extremely important and that is a concern from one of our from our teachers now I get to talk to you guys about Aries data and I need everybody to kind of follow me on this within Aries and the way that we input data in Aries as administrators is when there's a we have a tab called uh CER of discipline where we input all um documented cases of issues or concerns where a student may have or is uh disciplined so we looked at all secondary sites excluding AFC um Fairview and so alad we excluded them because they do not have locker rooms and there was in 2023 11 7,478 total injuries that encompasses everything in terms of discipline 69 of those entries which were documented within Aries by administrators occurred nearby outside uh going to walking away from the locker room that also includes maybe someone went in the the locker room unsupervised stole a cell phone or stole something and then they came out five cases or five entries were documented as having occurred within the locker room so those five cases would mean there was an actual fight that occurred inside the locker room so I wanted to just share that data that was 2223 here's 2122 you may ask why is there such a discrepancy between uh discipline right and I'm going to tell you from 2122 to 2223 Chico Unified grew we had more students along with more students sometimes means there's a little bit more Adventure which means that more students are getting in trouble and therefore we you know you saw the higher number in 2324 versus sorry uh 2223 versus 2122 where there was 8,71 entries of those 72 entries were associated with the locker room and there were five Associated or five of them having occurred inside the locker room now we have the next this slide I hope will answer some of uh our other questions is what do we do for our students that don't want to change inside the locker room or have difficulty changing in the locker room for whatever reason and I have to say that as administrators teachers and counselors we work with the student and the parent to find a way to work with them to find a privacy or a place for them to change that can be a classroom that could be another bathroom that can be an office space or it could just be a bathroom with a stall we always work with all our students and this could be a student that says hey you know what I don't feel comfortable or two I feel bullied or three you know this isn't my locker room I don't feel like belong well this is the options that we create for them here's some pictures of Chico High School this is what their locker room looks like it's kind of interesting and and I say this as uh once You' seen one locker room you kind of seen them all you'll see why there's PV and I'm looking at PV at the right and I'm like oh goodness look at that that's chica Jr that because that's what the locker room looks like so you'll see here in a second bid will chica Jr and Marsh and as you can tell you have those big huge aisles and those big huge locker rooms that you can't see through I do want to share one thing that uh it's not on the presentation but our teachers are really good because when the sixth graders came over to the junior highs a lot of our uh teachers what they did is they put all the six graders in one side or one aisle to keep them all together that was a request from our parents we thought it was a fantastic idea and we implemented that hey Pedro can you go back yeah because these uh picture slides are not in our presentation um to the next slide before um the picture on the left and the picture on the right are very different yeah you're right what's the difference boys and girls locker room which one's which if I recall the one on the left is boys and the one on the right is girls uhuh previous picture you have uh the boys and girls locker room uh boys on the left girls on the right okay thank you you're welcome so we have some recommendations from our PE teachers so the first one is locks and if you could see there these are the type of locks that they're hoping to get as you recall some of the supervision issue was that our students having to deal with outdated locks and our students having difficulty opening them Andor forgetting to lock them then they get lost misplaced or worse they get placed on another student Locker which then creates a security issue the majority of supervision issues arise from staff not being able to be two places at once so uh they would like additional supervision inside the locker room it's difficult for them the other thing is every student they they really would like to see every student wearing a uniform and they've also asked that for the school district to provide a uniform as and this has been requested from the high schools all Sites have requested the they would love to see water bottle filling stations on the black tops and at this point I want to say thank you and I'm going to invite Carrie mcgar and Mr uh Lawrence Taylor up and at any time we could ALS also ask our uh junior high and high school administrators to come on up as well but I'll let that be come from you all right so I think at this time we're opening it up for questions from board members yeah he's asking for the administrators at the middle school to come up as well oh no no no they're available want yes um I just wrote down some notes as we were going through the presentation um prudently holding my questions till the end um why are such a high percentage 10% a chico High failing in your guys's opinion the other schools you can go back to that slide if you like uh it's up there toward maybe a third of the way in yeah there was there it was no one forward so 10% of Chico high students are getting an f and and um the next closest one is the total figure so that's not a good comparison so PV 2% are getting enough so what's your guys's take on that um so I would guess like and I can only speak for my own classes personally is that a large part of it comes from attendance is the most common reason why students are struggling within my classes is classroom attendance um dressing down becomes kind of a secondary and usually the kids that don't attend school very often once they do start coming back to school they're usually the ones that don't dress down as well and so the combination of those two things are usually the biggest combination for why kids fail from my perspective so cabinet um is there a attendance problem at Chico High relative to PV no I would think that they're pretty similar um um on what kids are attending each school um I would have to look uh Tim I don't know if you off the top of your head would know what their attendance rates were last year okay well I'm not complaining okay I mean if Chico High wants to fail students for not attending PE or not dressing down you know it's okay by me um I am really curious as to why PV is coming up with such a different number that's a really remarkable difference 10% versus two so I was going to point that out um can we stay on that topic because I have questions about the same thing thanks um so kind of rolling with that same question um what so if we just look at the high schools um a orn F we're seeing almost 20% at Chico High um and a dnf at PV we're seeing 6% that's a really really big difference it's a significant big difference and the only thing that we're hearing right now that's different is the Four Points minus four points versus minus three points I mean I would love to understand better from any of our PE teachers like how is PE graded and how does a student fail or even get a d like how does a grade drop in PE um so that's um kind of the bigger question um and then from that I can kind of glean why the Foster and homeless youth are failing at a higher rate because of the two things you just said attendance and dressing down and I would imagine also participation if they're not participating that's a big portion of white kids AR um excelling in the class if again if some of its attendance if they're not making up the work that they missed um if there was some type of assignment that they needed to do and they didn't make up that but I would imagine most of that would become with participation that the kids are just not willing to participate why they're not participating at a different rate at Cho High versus py I couldn't answer that question and uh and again as this teacher he would be only only be able to answer to his class yeah and if they're not dressing down if they're consistently not dressing down they're the best that they're going to have is a 60% at CHS which is a zero room for error they need to be getting 100% in everything else and that's just not the way it works in our world 66 out of 10 I thought it was six out of 10 for partic the participation component is that correct yeah which is 60% which is z% away from failing it's like you know that's just a portion of the grade correct right right right so if if in that category they're getting a 60% they have to get higher than that to to not you know to to keep above that line can yeah yeah of course you can join um in my class uh daily participation represents 50% of their grade 25% is based on assessments uh whether those are physical not necessarily can they do something just can you show me how to do something and or even like a quiz on the actual sport or activity that we are doing so that's that 25% and then that other 25% represents that personal and social development that happens the the sportsmanship and the the things that occur with group and team activities so it's not necessarily the this for us it's a seven out of 10 but that only represents that 50% of their grade and that is true across our site I don't I don't know about our s sorry where do you work I'm sorry Mar J okay yeah and so I guess just to round out that part of the series of questions is just regarding grading how grades are broken down how the how dressing down may or may not impact a student's ability to pass a class um and I also had a question about the students with disabilities having D's or FS at a a relatively higher rate than some of our other targeted case targeted groups so just some orange flags for me yeah go back to that because that I I missed that so so you're telling me that students with disabilities are also failing PE so can we give some kind of careful thoughtful analysis as to why that is come yes uh I can there is also a high absenteeism um within that group and so anytime that you have a high absenteeism Within uh a certain population of students uh of course uh uh the way that it's set up within PE uh the students will it's very difficult to pass and I also need to share that um unlike other uh subject areas in um Junior highs um and also in high schools well sorry just Junior highs I won't say high schools just yet it is a federally mandated class it's not only a federally mandated class but they need to have 40 plus minutes of daily physical activity inside that class and that is the assignment inside of that class so when that student doesn't do that which is that assignment um I I will tell you that only having gone through this at Chico Jr through a federal mandate um audit if you will uh they looked at that very badly and they want to see records of all the students and all the minutes that they are doing to ensure that they are getting 40 minutes of daily activity it's a very very um I guess intense recording process of making sure that students get physical activity that's for freshman too right I do not know that answer whether it's a happens for freshman as well but it's I guess I'm just inferring from the requirement of uh only 10 11 or 12th grade you can take away those requirements it sounds like freshman is required to um sorry I think you might be more formulated than me right now so I have a a question um a curiosity like I have a pretty high opinion of all you guys our staff at administrators I think that you guys are pretty doing a good job out there and um if a student came to you uh I'm sorry sry I missed your name uh Laurence St great thank you um and and said not like a Junior High kid would would do this right I mean but but if a kid came to you and said you know I'm really having a hard time with this Fillin the blank unit because of my such and such disability you know I mean Junior High kids really don't talk this way in my my experience no kidding you know but but if one did and could and there might be that old soul out there who who would approach you oneon-one and make give you a message like this how would you handle that situation um just like with any student in any class is that when they approach a teacher with a problem is that the first inclination is to help them with said problem so long as it's reasonable I mean again kids are going to come up with every excuse in the book for the most part but if it's a legitimate concern and they're coming to you with a problem is my first inclination is to try to fix the problem um so I would if I couldn't fix it myself then I would approach my administrators my department chair things like that to try to to um alleviate the problem would you ever go out of your way or your colleagues anyone feel free to speak up to to notice a kid that was had a disability maybe a visible one or or one that you were merely aware of and and was on the sidelines and and in Cas I mean this is your job right to like a try to engage a child who's not participating and try to maybe put it together that maybe there's a reason why they're not and and try to fix that problem if we're talking with a student with an IEP or you know a special Edge student they would have already had a transition meeting or a meeting with the IEP team to see what the accommodations for that student would be when it comes to their disability so it would be no surprise to them if they had a student with a disability in their class and they would work around the accommodations for those students in that PE class so I just want to make sure that we are we are clear on that that's what it comes to with a student with a disability so if we're looking at if they're still working within their IEP and their accommodations and a student let's just say it's a speech student and their accommodation has to do with speech and they're not participating then that's when their grade would fall if there's something else within their accommodation and they're not with those accommodations and it's still not working within that participation then that's how their grade would fall am I correct okay we're Super Lucky sorry we're super lcky our our special heal department does an excellent job of giving us that information before school even starts so at our very first staff meeting before school I'm handed all of my kiddos and I can see what are accommodations that have worked I can see all the exact diagnosis of what they're struggling with and then it's broken down for okay um and then does that translate from school up into the new school so are your new crop of kids are you hearing from from like the previous school and then on to high school and all that okay don't forget to talk into the microphone um because of the so the rest of the crowd and um our folks on on YouTube can hear um the millions of people who are watching worldwide they want to hear what you have to say too the sorry the last thing that I was trying to formulate was um just to clarify that students are not necessarily they're not they're not going to fail because they are absent they're failing because they're not making up the time from being being absent and there's an opportunity to make up that time since we can't actually fail students for being absent you're correct 100% correct however many days that they may be absent if it is an excused absence they get that many days uh to make up that assignment and in this case that many days to make up the PE workout yeah I have a couple questions but I think probably what I'm hearing is that um students who may have um maybe specifically just missing the PE period correct like it's an unexcused PE they're there maybe for the rest of the day but they don't show up for that particular period that does happen absolutely that even happens at the junior high level yester and then um my other uh question for teachers I'm definitely hearing um from the presentation that um um the schools are favorably looking upon um having the students be in a a uniform like a everybody wears the same one um I'm curious um just what you consider appropriate what what you would consider appropriate athletic wear I mean I know what I consider appropriate athletic wear but if a student girl guy whatever shows up in jeans um as often you might in in winter um how m is that considered okay not okay does this vary from class to class teacher to teacher school to school what what do you individually consider passing for athletic wear um so at Chico High we have a tendency to go with t-shirt of some sort shorts or sweatpants they can wear sweatshirts or jackets if it's cold um but big thing is we're looking that they changed out of their school clothes so if they're wearing their jeans out to PE it's a pretty safe bet that they're probably not changing out of those into another pair of genes to go out to do PE um like Mr Caldera said is that genes are getting more and more active esque I guess but we typically we're not going to allow jeans to cut it as PE uniforms um we don't really care so much about the colors um long as they're changing into something that they can move around in that's safe that's it's not going to be revealing some um some females will come in with stuff that may be a little bit too revealing that if they start moving around that we could have some wardrobe type malfunctions and we have to go have them get something else on so all I see on um high school campuses and Middle School are Crocs are kids changing out of their Crocs and do a pair of tennis shoes every single time um no um and that at Chico High We that's that's a suit cut that those are not athletic shoes they're dangerous in a lot of fashion they'll we have a lot of kiddos that will say oh but I have him in sport mode I mean my my kid's the same I have a 10-year-old and he will go out and run as hard as he can in Crocs and it can be done but it's not a safe I if they cut wrong is that we're trying to cut down on injuries as well with the Footwear so we say no to the Crocs uh birken stocks uh SL sides that type of stuff for safety reasons I I do want to clarify something on the Crocs just in case our public is listening uh Crocs is a brand and they have multiple shoe types of shoes that are also called Crocs and some of them are actually used for CrossFit uh which are actually used for athletic purposes so just want to share that just in case our public may not understand talking about the ugly plastic ones yeah oh I I hear you it's the one my wife won't let me buy yeah um I have a question um I know that some students with particular disabilities have um like midline perception problems which keep them from being able to jump up and down jump from side to side do do you get a breakdown that gives you that much information so you know that if for example you're asking a a student with a disability to try to hit a birdie in badminton and the chances of them ever being able to accomplish that are zero what do you do for adaptive PE yeah we are absolutely aware of all those situations and I feel super blessed that we have adapted PE teachers that coordinate with us so come to our site meet with us and our student and families and they're part of that that IEP team or 504 team whatever um the case may be and uh we work together to figure out the best way but I'm pretty certain that I could probably speak to a lot of physical education teachers when we say that we are not grading you on how well you do something it is mainly about participation and effort that is what we're looking for you will never be graded down on missing a birdie I also want to add to that that um I've been lucky to work with a lot of physical education teachers and with they do best and want more than anything of any child or student is for them to be physically active so therefore adapting the activity to the ability of the student is always first and foremost um how do you respond when a student might come to you and um just let you know that they really don't have other clothes to change into are there always loners on hand or um I I just am imagining you know a kid who might just not have that set of clothes for whatever reason you know switching houses or other other reasons so yeah at Chico High um in our offices we have just laner clothes like at the end of the year we'll ask students that are finishing up their PE career to donate uh lightly used PE clothes and then we take them to you to our laundry facility and we wash them and then we keep them in our office and then so if somebody comes in and says hey I forgot my shoes or I forgot um a shirt or whatever we try to go get them one um if for some reason we don't have a size or something is that we will go go to the stock and just grab another one out and then we'll turn it into a loner to give to them um also um a lot of the times we'll have uh counselors come to us and say hey this person came to us and they need PE clothes and then we just go have a we have a grant policy and we go get them full sets and and uh grant them those when they come to you for um laner clothes do um I should call it temporary clothes laner sounds I don't know negative um borrowed clothes do do you um they don't get a suit cut for that do they no okay and um is there any kind of stigma that you've observed at all about students using the laner clothes sorry the borrowed clothes no because our borrowed clothes look identical to our regular PE uniform like they don't have any designation on them that says hey by the way I borrowed this it's no it's just um and we don't have a strict policy where if they don't bring them back is we're like okay whatever we go with the go to the next grouping and just continue on we're not chasing them down for them afterwards um but yeah no there's no I I mean they go into the office it's very um it's accommodating they're not nobody's seeing them go to the basket and grab them out of the basket it's they come in and ask now the one thing that could be said is that they have to come in and ask they have to advocate for themselves if they want to and there are some kids that might not be willing to do that part of it um maybe we they we seem intimidating even though we're very accommodating in our offices sorry I don't always get to be up here so I'm going to do a shameful plug for our PE teachers if you want to make a PE teacher happy buy them a laundry detergent and as funny as that sounds our PE teachers across the district Junior High and high school they will wash the PE clothes for our students and they do so routinely to make sure that they have clean clothes so on and so forth I was going to add on to that just because when we were meeting with the PE teachers um and we uh we met with them from every site and then we had all the p teachers meet um on their District on their collaboration day that we gave them questions to ask and get bring up but one of the things they're saying is the con they're doing laundry and I appreciate them for watching the laundry um when kids bring them back and having them available because every site has the washer and dryer for them but our our PE teachers are now also people that do laundry so I appreciate your effort for that I was just gonna add that like these are our kids and we don't want them to fail we care about them and so if I have a kiddo who is not wearing their PE clothes I guarantee you most teachers are going to be like what's happening talk to me like what do you need I even had a kid yesterday and he's like oh I forgot my PE clothes at my mom's house but I'm not going there until next week no worries let me grab you another set now you can have two at both houses like I don't think anybody's out there to to get you when it comes to dressing down I think we really want what's best for all of our kids and I I don't think want to wear their cute school clothes out to PE and and I I think you know they have their tennies that they don't want to crease I don't know if you guys have that in high school so I feel like I I think that we all want what's best and if we're gonna definitely go out of our way to ask our kids what is going on how can I help you how how can I make this better what do you need I I really think everybody's going to come from that stance thanks um first just to put this out there I have a question actually for um I think Julie and Jacqueline could we in the future get a rough breakdown on what it would cost to implement the requests recommendation from the PE teachers that we saw on that slide for the locks uh yeah there locks and extra extra supervision um just so we know you know if in a perfect world what that would cost us and secondly um I'm still concerned about the grade distribution um I'm been thinking about it a lot and one of the things that I'm really concerned about is that whether our students go to PB or chico they're getting the same education or the same level of education and what this tells me is either really different students go to the two schools and demographics are are different or else we're offering programs that at least grade and possibly educate in different ways so I'd like to there's not an easy answer for that I'd like to know in the future again what are the differences there and how can we bring those two programs into greater alignment I'd like to answer that question one of the things that we do through districtwide staff development is we ask all our departments what their wishes are and I can tell you that one of The Wishes uh for a while not just this year has been for the PE departments across both sites to be able to get together and discuss some of those uh grading policies um units and how to get more activity amongst their uh students so that is something we're working towards thank you um I want to kind of trail on um Tom's initial uh request um so this is just an information only item we're not taking action necessarily tonight but we can see if there it's in within the capacity of of staff to to crunch some numbers or look into something for us so um but the bullet points I made from the requests or concerns from the presentation are an increased need of supervision um addressing out of dat locks um um which also kind of goes into that supervision piece because if we're having to recombo or look up combos um that that's an adult that is taken away from the entire situation um Locker floor layout um which is obviously going to be a long-term fix that's going to cost a lot of money um uh cell phones and cameras usage in the locker rooms like how would how would that even be addressed or implemented I know that there's a district um in the Sacramento is area that doesn't allow that but I don't even know how you do that like how do you enforce that we that's like we've been hitting our heads for almost two decades now about cell phon in schools um District provided uniforms at the high school um so what does that what does that cost look like um and then the water filling stations on the black top I think is also a great safety concern to to look into um and I know that we already have some pretty quick quick quick numbers on the water bottle filling stations because we have installed those recently um yeah thank you I have another question um in regards to uh when students are accommodated if they choose to uh dress in an Al alternative location rather than the locker rooms um seems like five minutes is a pretty limited time to um to meet those students those needs a couple questions one um how do you accommodate for students who want to change in a stall where maybe they're waiting for the stall um or maybe they have to like you mentioned go to a an office or a classroom or or wherever uh how like do you allow more time um in that way and then also oh darn I forgot my second part but it'll come to me but maybe go ahead and start with that I'll answer your first question and uh as you remember the second one feel free to let me know so yes uh let me walk you through a little scenario that way we understand say that we have a student uh that brings it to the attention of an administrator counselor say Hey listen I'm I'm having difficulties changing inside a locker room I I don't feel safe or I'm having issues with another student in there don't want to go there whatever the reason X Y or Z doesn't matter uh we will work with that student the minute we start working with that student and finding a place for the student to be successful then we communicate with the teacher and if they need additional time we accommodate that if we need to accommodate them extra time to leave earlier or arrive uh later so on and so forth we always adjust time for the student within reason of course we also do not want students taken advantage and we have to make sure that the meet the um uh the physical activity minutes uh that they have to meet I remembered my second part thank you though perfect um so I I guess one of us uh brought up um the stigma associated with borrowing uh a uniform I'm concerned about the stigma associated with kids who don't feel comfortable in this scenario and um feeling uncomfortable for having to do something um different than their peers 99.9% of the time no one knows because the students will meet on the black top design designated area and students will usually work with the teacher and say okay hey where am I going to be next uh tomorrow we're going to be on the black top perfect and that's where they're at they're in roll call the students only know they're in roll call so lastly and maybe you don't know this but what percentage um would you say of kids are are asking for like an alternative location a different place to change other than the locker room and it probably varies from site to site I would say it does vary from site to site but I can tell you that we've been doing this for I'll I'll just give you my example and maybe you can uh extrapolate an idea from there I was at the Chica Jr for the past 17 years um as an administrator I can tell you that we had uh at least uh anywhere from a handful of students uh maybe Dro down to around two students per year um and for multip reasons and then we'd have some students that would say hey you know what uh trial basis I don't want to change in the locker room but then they felt comfortable and they would go into the locker room and start changing so it's a it's a process we work with every every student and uh we try to make those accommodations for them so that they are successful just for my clarification um tardies and PE are counted if they're not on the like on the black black top in time right in roll call right so so at the the regular school tardy Bell is not the same as the PE tardy notice okay that was just my making sure I'm understanding the full picture thank you it's uh I could add to that probably go longer than sorry jay I could say the following is that uh students are very very Savvy and they know that they can change in like two minutes so some of the favorite classes that they're late getting into the locker room is usually PE if that makes sense the Bell Rings they go man I can change in two minutes I don't need to walk there I I could run there later and so they're hanging out with their friends a little later so it's kind of interesting how that all works out um can I shift gears and bring up a different subject as long as it's related to the board Workshop it's related oh for sure um cameras on cell phones um I think I brought this up in our meeting but but I don't we didn't talk a lot about it but um do England UK I don't remember if it was one County or or the whole country but but last week they banned cell phones in schools you know um I'm sure somebody somewhere in California has talked to you madam superintendent about whether this is somehow doable and you know what what what are the options for maybe doing something like that here because I know that just a lot of so social media and there's just a lot of things going on with cell phones potentially cheating artificial intelligence I think if you asked Educators they would be game on let's not have cell phones in schools I think if you asked parents that's a very different response I think our parents really feel that they need that connection with their children especially um to and from school or uh if they feel that you know our society we've there have been some situations where they feel unsafe school students for example and they want that direct contact with their students well I'll send the message out there to the world that I I know a few parents here in town and um I'm I'm open to the idea of of getting rid of cell phones in school because I think it's diminishing from the educational experience so just for everyone's information I I I want to take a closer look at that especially if it's a potential problem or a realized problem in in our our locker facilities um so yeah that that's a very serious concern yes and I think we can look at things um like at for a specific class I think it's going to be very difficult for a student to have their cell phone and be out participating in physical education so you know maybe there are classes where we say you don't bring a cell phone or the cell phone stays that comes into the locker it stays in the locker in the locker room if we see it out we're going to hold it which is a whole another set of issues but and I want to clarify most of the time and Carrie if you guys if you want to tr me is that kids have to keep their cell phones in their backpacks and put away is that true administrators they're not supposed to be having them out anytime in classrooms or in locker rooms or PE without teacher permission if they're going to be using them in class for something but majority of the time they have to be put away and off correct okay um is there like a uh what What's the circumstance where your cell phone could get we this is maybe the topic for I I I realize this could be a whole another conversation you know but um you know I mean just like you're saying like hey put that away we don't we don't allow cell phones here in the in the locker room is is that pretty much as far as it would go or it' be like oh that's mine give me that right now I mean what what where's the discipline scale at um I try to avoid taking cell phones because some of these kids cell phones are worth a week's pay to me so I and if anything has were to happen to it while it was in my position is that kind of ends on me so I don't take them but I will if it gets to be a big problem I will radio a campus supervisor to come get it and then it goes to an admin to deal with that and then they have to get it from the admin I mean to be clear all jesting aside it would not be your problem if you were on the clock with you know it would be the problem of the school district if he broke a kid's cell phone it wouldn't be him paying for it it'd be us paying for it you know um but we can't have kids uh bringing cell phones into locker rooms where they might be filming people right so that's a serious problem and we need to have a serious uh approach to it I think um we we do have the approach of if I see it is out then I am taking it and I am turning into my Administration and um it was a lot more prevalent earlier in the school year and now students uh it's much less thankfully thank you for taking that firm hand and it sounds to me like they got the message and so they're not doing it anymore I would encourage I mean we should be doing stuff like that and I I think that would tie back to the probable need for increased sup extra adults for supervision too probably where Maybe a little more difficult to to monitor all of the happenings thought I had something on the tip of my head but now I don't remember what it was it's the things I'm bringing up are so interesting that the all other topics is kind of pale in comparison oh yeah um does there I'm kind of going back to what you were saying about um the the low number in your experience at shica junr um the low number of students who to really emphasize the desire to have better privacy while they were changing for for PE um there are in the locker rooms there are like bathroom stalls right that they can at Marsh there's four oh in the girls there's four and then three in the boys it's the same at all three middle schools there's anywhere from three to four in boys and girls locker rooms do you think that that I just imagine being a middle schooler again and how it it it is I mean we deal with it and we eventually get used to it usually um you know there's always going to be a and I hope that it's better today than it was you know when I was in school a long time ago um some of the comments body shaming sort of teasing that happens that maybe doesn't get reported out as like an assertive discipline thing but just you know kids kind of experience some of those bullying things which hopefully are mitigated a lot by having an adult present right um but maybe if there's um like a a more I'm imagining like popup changing you know like temporary little changing units that people can just slip in and change their clothes out really quick if they wanted a little bit more privacy but in that locker room space go ahead Carri um I get it and I I do I would like to believe that it is better um but we do allow our students to choose where they are in the locker room yes we try to group our sixth graders like in those rows together on the corner but um it happens all the time like I don't really like where I'm at I'm uncomfortable because of this situation no worries let's change your locker so let's go find a spot for you where you can be comfortable around people that you feel good or closer to this area or closer to the restroom because that's where you like to change or I think we're flexible in trying to make sure that everybody feels safe in that environment also like to add that our PE teachers are extremely masterful at talking with their kids and making sure that they respect one another um matter of fact that's usually what they spend the first two weeks of school is working on make sure that they understand procedures procedures in the locker room getting in the line so on and so forth I'd like to say that they were the original PBIS initiative um just because of well quite frankly the way that PE ran was usually the way that your school went so so uh very very highly organized group of individuals plus five minutes goes by really fast I don't I don't think my I'm just gonna say out loud I think it was inferred that um it'll be fun to see Chico High's locker room situation be revamped and equal equal I don't know what the word is I'm trying to I say equalized equalized yeah maybe that's the word I was trying for yeah anyway any other questions thoughts comments comments or staff are you asking what I was talking about oh the girls locker room is definitely not as nice as the boy locker room it looks more outdated and uh smaller lockers and yeah it it it is outdated but as far as on the boy side I will take the girl side lockers 100 issue and the the girls lockers are bigger they're all big lockers we on the boys side go with we have big Sports lockers and then we have all small lockers I I thought I saw like some of the little the little ones and a couple of the bigger ones we have the bigger ones for athletes so they're for football pads and things like that like they go just to athletes nothing else thank you big thank you thank you yeah I I just wanted to thank the uh the presentation because I I thought I knew what goes on in the locker rooms you know for filling out the who stole my cell phone stuff for all those years of my wallet got stolen my you know but your presentation has really filled in a lot of the blanks and I I appreciate the work that went into the presentation thank you again I like to thank the teacher for being here tonight and very good job Mr Keo on your first Workshop thank you very much Mr marant thank you thank you Pedro thank you thanks oh yeah yeah yeah um all right so uh we'll move on to public comment for this item so 4.1 public comment um I'm just going to start at the top of the list on the on the page um um and just a reminder that for public comment um folks are given three minutes to address the board um at the 30 second left Mark you'll hear a a tone um a bell and uh that signifies you know your time is nearly up and please wrap up your thoughts and um and then uh we'll move on to the next speaker um and so I will call up Shan Mossman as our first speaker followed by Dr Christine lner good evening um uh well here I am just kind of still beating the same drum that I've been beating for um right out a year now and it seems like a lot of the discussion this evening skirted around an elephant sitting in the room and that of course is the trans issue in the locker rooms I understand what the state law is and I understand what the state of California is doing and how it's positioned itself and how school boards have positioned themselves directly opposed to parents opposed to students opposed to values opposed to morality by allowing trans students boys in the girls locker room um we talk I heard a lot of a lot of comments about uh used tonight about different situations which apply to most everything but not to this issue we take this issue and we turn it on its head and and nothing else matters we heard about reasonable accommodation I'm in the Housing Industry I know about reasonable accommodation and reasonable modifications and I understand what that means if somebody's got a particular issue something needs to be addressed something that needs to be addressed a problem that they have because of a disability or because of a belief or because of Any number of reasons we want to accommodate them because we're caring people we don't want their life to be hard we and we understand we may have to adjust a rule or or modify something so that they can enjoy their life so that they can be appropriate but when it comes to this issue we throw out the idea of reasonable accommodation we take somebody with gender confusion and we make the entire student body bear the burden of their problem instead of making a reasonable accommodation for that student we make we we instead we take that boy we put him in the girls locker room and make those girls uncomfortable we compromise them we violate their dignity we violate their modesty we force them to violate their menu uh uh their their values it was test here that they've got to uh one of the terms I heard was that they have to um um uh uh self- Advocate these kids don't even know what that means to self- Advocate they just know that for years they've been told that they can't say anything because it's going to create an unsafe situation that they've got to keep their mouth shut they can't they they can't speak out and stand for stand for themselves because somebody else is going to be made to feel unsafe and it's a and and it's it's this extreme minority of of of of the population that says uh that are that that are so frail that are so sensitive that from this Podium over and over and over again last year from this Podium I heard that they are so sensitive that they're going to go commit suicide if we don't give them access to the naked bodies of our teenage girls that's ridiculous um we heard we care about we uh we want what's best for our kids yeah we want what's best for our kids not just this this this this one within reason we're completely without of reason we said the uh the uh the accommodation request for changing was between a handful and as many as two I know for a fact that in my one daughter's one class that there were 10 students requested uh Dr ler followed by Michelle Cooper first I'd like to start off by thanking the three of you that supported the trans policies in the springtime um that saves lives and I thank you for that um and I'm here today to express a hope that this wasn't targeting transgender kids but unfortunately it seems as though it is sometimes especially for some community members um I recently saw article published in the Smithsonian Magazine describing the the day the year that Adolf Hitler came into power and how he took away trans people's rights to dress and express themselves as they wish to use facilities that they needed to use Etc and this is the same flavor of fascist Playbook that's playing out in our country nationally today I would like to also remind everyone that neither gender nor biological sex is binary at least one in every 1,500 people are inner sex which means that that they're born with sexual and reproductive Anatomy that does not fit male or female this is a conservative estimate more people one in every hundred don't match what's typical of male female anatomy but let's go with the conservative estimate so this means that in Chico Unified there's at least 10 students that are INX in any given school year these kids need a place to change in the locker room with the beautiful bodies that they were given at Birth so let's talk about locker rooms according to the assembly bill 1266 and the department of of California Department of Education schools are required to Foster an educational environment that's safe and free from discrimination regardless of sex and gender identity or sexual orientation it states that students shall access the restroom or locker room that corresponds with their gender identity they have asserted at school additionally and I'm sure other speakers today will make outlandish non- science-based and non-factual statements about this issue issue first I just want to say I'm sorry that these individuals haven't been educated enough about the issues related to interx and transgender students to understand its common practice to allow people to be their authentic selves secondly the California Department of Education website has clearly states that students who desire increased privacy regardless of underlying reasons will get a private changing area sounds like we're doing that and this means that schools are required to allow INX and trans kids to change in the locker room of their choosing while also providing a private changing space for anyone who is uncomfortable for any reason schools cannot however require a transgender student to use those Alternatives because requiring a transgender student to be singled out by using separate facilities is not only a denial of their equal access it also May violate the students right to privacy by disclosing their transgender status or causing others to question why the student is being treated differently and I just just want people to leave our queer students alone I really do we have Michelle Cooper followed by Arwin FK um I just want to start by saying that I Echo all the sentiments that Mr Mossman said I mean I think the big issue here that was not addressed in this presentation was that we have biological male students changing in girls locker rooms and I really curious as to why that wasn't part of the presentation and what are we going to do about it a biological girls should not have to feel uncomfortable in their own locker room and they should not be the ones that have to leave because of that I question any female here if you would be comfortable taking your clothes off in front of of a boy I mean I wouldn't want to I go to the gym I don't I don't want to do it at the gym um it's not comfortable because it you don't want somebody seeing you in that vulnerable position so we need to figure this out um I am concerned about the grading as well um if we have that many disabled students being um given poor grades I think that is something that it we need to go back to the specialed uh teachers and address their IEPs and figure out what is going on and accommodate those students a little better um I have I I understand all the concerns of the PE uh teachers about the locks the phones the supervision the uniform the water I think those are all great points but I think we need to focus on why students are getting bad grades and if I'm not willing to as as a teenage girl dressed down I might say to myself you know what I'm willing to take the the hit on the points because I'm not willing to dress down in that locker room because there's a boy in there so I you know I think we just need to dig deeper on that a little bit um one last thing I want to touch on was the laundry soap comment and I really hope we are not expecting our teachers to purchase laundry soap to wash these uniforms I see the the amount of money that this District spends on Amazon and I think we can afford to get them some laundry soap thank you next is Arwin Funk hi everybody I've changed my mind a couple times about what I was going to talk about tonight um I've come to most of these meetings for the last year about once a month and I have watched Claire and sha Mossman come up here and ask for help and there's an ongoing fight about trans gender students that's obviously going to go on I think it's worth mentioning that um bullies call names and throw out their pseudo science and that doesn't make them right the reason you say oh well we're following state law well we all know there's laws that are ridiculous but it's all about how people feel they we want to allow them to be their authentic selves right you guys have preached about safety for years now especially since coid everything is about safety and how kids are feeling I believed those PE teachers that spoke to us this evening they really did seem to care but there has been a young woman in front of you once a month for the last year begging for help she says she's not comfortable she feels violated and you guys couldn't even be bothered to put any of that in the presentation tonight and nobody talked about it until Shawn brought it up you say you care I've watched when sh when Claire came up here and spoke before you and three of you every time she does you put your heads down you don't even look her in the eye as she begs you for help all that stuff that was talked about tonight was good and valuable information it those are conversations that should be had but this conversation has to happen too if you care how kids feel if they're asking for help if they feel vulnerable that's what you say you care about then you should be listening to her and let me tell you it's one thing to give special accommodations tell her that she can go to another restroom on campus well what happens when it's more when Sean says he knows for a fact it was 10 girls in that class I have had parents come talk to me because they've heard me speak at Schoolboard meetings and I know that there is an opposite sex student in almost every locker room in our middle and upper schools in this town and I'm not saying those kids aren't gender dysphoric I'm not saying that they might be but the problem is that your policies don't allow you to actually find out so what if you're wrong this is a problem and you guys need to figure it out uh this is informational only excuse me and so no action is needed uh we will go on to item 5.1 under Business Services uh this is a discussion action item for Charter Schools measure K projects requests hi good evening thank you for having me here tonight um bringing forward from the measure K Charter facility committee meeting meeting that was held last month um regarding two projects for Forest Ranch Charter School um we are asking for your review and approval for two projects one of them being a sprinkler system repair reeding and and also sing in another area of the campus and a replacement for their inwall MPR tables for their dining area um um you the amount that they're asking for is $40,000 for the sprinklers and uh grass field repair and the sod the grass field is is very large and the um $75,000 for the eight new inwall MPR tables that need to be retrofit when the campus was constructed uh the tables were built in and those tables are no longer available so there'll be retrofit tables um specialty specially made for those so tonight we're bringing those two projects forward with measure K dollars for Forest Ranch charter school any questions Julie have we been able to get those retrofitted tables locally or is it is it something our maintenance staff is creating What's um the company that they come from is called Palmer and they are a a nationwide company but the the folks that um do the ordering and the installation uh for us they're out of reading thank you any other questions for clarification all right seeing none um and no uh public comment on this I will call for a motion move to approve second motion okay we have a motion to approve the measure K request from Forest Ranch Charter School um from Mr tennis and a second from Miss Robinson uh let's uh we'll just we were unanimous last time so we can there's no further discussion just call for a Voice vote all those in favor I opposed it's unanimous 5 Z approved thank you okay uh let's move on to item 52 Educational Services we're on 5.2.1 uh public hearing and discussion action for resolution number 1616 d23 Williams textbook sufficiency for the 2023 to 24 school year that'd be me every year um we have to make sure that we are compliant with the Williams textbook sufficient uh sufficiency act um that's required through Ed code 60119 that requires that each pupil within the chicu Unified School District be provided sufficient textbook and instructional materials lying to the contact standards and consistent with the cycles and content of the curriculum Frameworks in the area of History social science mathematics reading language arts and science so every year we ask our principles to ask their departments to make sure that they have all the textbooks and the materials they need for each subject matter um they'll get a form that they have to fill out to say that they're sufficient or not and if they're not then we get the textbooks that they need to make sure that every student has what they need to make sure that those are done and we have um to let you know that everything has been taken care of sufficiently wise and that everybody has the textbook that it's needed do we have any excuse me uh board technical questions for clarification okay I will open this for the public hearing do we have public comments for this item seeing none I will close the hearing uh do we have any motions associated with this item yes uh thank you I move approval of resolution number 1616 d23 second all right we have a motion by Miss Robinson and a a second by Miss conin um any further discussion board all right seeing none uh all those in favor please say I I I opposed it's unanimous 5- Z it passes uh on to 5.3 the board 5.3.1 is informational this is a first reading of the revised updated new board policies so we brought this item forward last time and it had been inappropriately edited so we're bringing it back for a first reading this is education for English Learners board policy 6174 so at this time there's no action it is a first reading okay any questions board seeing no questions uh and no public comment on this item I have a question okay um we were talking about another board policy that's on the next agenda item um I was talking about it with you right Mr Marshon and um the references of the code sections that it was Rel relevant to had were all struck out in that one but I noticed that in this one they're not struck out yeah when um you and I spoke and then when I was um talking behalf of the district about the strikeout material we ended up calling or uh Miss Staley ended up calling the csba to get clarification on that would you like to Sure happy too so uh thank you for bringing that forward and we did call csba and in the directions that they sent to us it said that the references were not to be part of board policy but what they meant by it not being part of board policy is they aren't actually up in the policy what their intention was is exactly as they are here that they're designated below as a reference so we have now gone back and removed those strikeouts and we will just leave those there um and we did learn that they're in the process of making those references um active links so that you that you can click right on them and go straight to EDG code or civil code great okay I like that so thank you for bringing that forward yeah bring that forward I gave you bad information originally sorry yes I have a question I know that I have a suggestion for a wording change but I I need to wait for the second reading to bring that forward right because there's no action tonight okay we'll do that it's just one word okay um seeing no additional questions from the board and no public comments this is information only so we will not be taking action tonight and we will see it on our um agenda for the next board meeting uh we will move to item 5.3.2 um it is a discussion action item approval of the revised updated and or new board policies that we saw last time correct these have all been brought forward last time for a first reading so uh now would be the appropriate time if there were changes that the board would like to see made for the board to discuss and if appropriate vote upon the changes I do believe that we have public comment on these items do we have any questions for clarification from the board on these or comments or guess question yeah just that we are deleting one board policy and I think we already talked about it but I just want to get it on the record what's what's the story with the deletion of 514 1.6 I believe Jen uh Scola addressed this last time so I'll try to remember what she said but uh that it is being oh is Jin is she here okay then I won't speak for her she's very careful care capable of speaking for herself thank you happy hi um last board meeting we talked about deleting this board policy because it talks directly about bringing Health Services onto our campuses and at this point in time that isn't something that we're um considering we have the Community Schools grant that we're working on so it's not looked looking we're not looking at that at this point but maybe in the future so it's just not something we can feasibly do with bringing nurses and doctors and dentists on campuses that's what this board policy is looking at thank you and we tend to not have board policies that we can't feasibly do agree thank you um at this time it looks like there's no additional questions for clarification so I will call up our public speaker again three minutes with a 30 second warning at the um at the end and uh we are um going to hear from Loretta Tores I'm Loretta Tores I have two grandchildren in your school systems and I was reading over your 5.32 3 yeah 5.32 policy and I was delighted to read the first paragraphs graph of your board policy concerning parental notification but as I read through the rest of it I was disappointed that there was were no further mention specifically especially referring to a counselor's being required to inform parents before any different pronouns were used in your classroom for dis for sexual dor dysphoria because a counselor who actually was at the root of this Aurora Regino lawsuit a couple of months ago wrote 900 words in the ER and this lawsuit is still being adjudicated and appealed but she was defending her position on keeping secrets from parents she used data that I believe is too new to be reliable there are other studies that seem to show just the opposite about problems sexually dysphoric students have as minors children's best interests have always been to involve parents from the day my children started kindergarten more than 50 years ago parents were we were preach to that we should be involved for a better educated and better adjusted student and our children matter to us so I say that this new age transgender craze that's sweeping our nation needs to be re-evaluated for this school district it social engineering should not be in your hands at this time I believe your best interests and what you do best is teaching your students to read write and do math not not arithmetic and and and and history parents rely on you to keep them informed so they can bring their children to adulthood alive and well adjusted keeping secrets is not the acceptable solution here change your policy wording change it I beg you for the students that are coming up and that will not will will benefit for from parents being involved thank you all right seeing no additional public comment uh board do we have a motion regarding this item I move approval of all the changes I'll second that motion okay we have a motion and a second any further discussion board uh seeing none uh those in favor of approval signify by saying I I I opposed uh it's unanimous 5 Z thank you um next up is item 6.1 um this is a board member request to agendize item uh the discussion action item to is to is a request to agendize a presentation with discussion and possible action about the open status of the high school campuses and the issues that students and the community are experiencing related to open campus policies um and this was submitted by myself um last week and um I'm just gonna pull this up really quick so um the full context was attached um in our fancy form um this item addresses goal three and four to provide behavioral instruction and supports as a proactive approach to creating a safe positive climate and school culture um and additionally provide those supports for academic social emotional and behavioral needs of foster youth students uh my rationale uh for requesting this item come forward in a future um board meeting um is it says so far just the school year there have been numerous reports of off-campus fighting theft vandalism littering loitering vaping smoking and general poor behavior during school hours observed of chica unified students uh due to open campus policies at the high schools and also School cuts um I believe the Board needs to be updated on these issues and potential action potential action may need to be taken to uh look further into it and potentially um move to considering mitigation for um these uh disruptions um and then it goes on to talk about our lcap goals and how this is related to that but I'm not going to read that off because everybody else is perfectly capable of reading also um and so uh that's my that's my request um I'm not asking that we close school campuses or anything like that I think that it would just be beneficial to get an idea of what these reports consist of and um and what that might mean for how to address those those issues um at this time I'm not gonna um support agendize this item um hold on one second because I think that since this is our first time with our new process I think we would need so this is my motion um we would need a second for discussion I'll second it with the purpose of discussion Okay carry on please um at this time I am not going to support um uh agendize this item uh I've kind of dug in and did my own research on the issue and I reached out to Administration both Chico high and also py and just wanted to get an idea of um basically uh what what kind of activity is happening um when when students are leaving campus and I know the what we're talking about is is the lunch hour or 40 minutes and from what I understand 10th 11th and 12th graders are allowed to do that now um as a mom of a 10th grader I know it's a huge deal for him it's a big write of Passage um and it's a privilege for these students to leave campus um and in talking with Administration it's really not an issue that that maybe is significant enough to address in my opinion with a meeting I also um found out a lot of the activity that's happening is um not necessarily by Chico high students in regards to some of the activity near downtown but more of a um unschooled even um students or 19y olds who are coming from even outside of Chico and um creating a lot of issues um from what I understand and I know um um just logistically I I know that um talking with the administrators um if we were to keep all students on campus during that lunch hour it would require a lot of adaptations with scheduling they'd have to break it into um two chunks of time which just isn't real feasible with um the fact that they use that time often for meetings and um things of that nature and also um in talking with the principal at at PB um Mr Waker you also made the point of at one I I believe they've been doing this for about 15 years and at one point in time they realized like um ninth graders it was something that they just maturity wise um it wasn't something that they could handle and they were seeing a lot of issues with that so they um made changes based on that and decided that you know it was a privilege that um was for 10th 11th and 12th graders and the way I see it is the kids are for the most part you know they they're um doing a great job they're following the rules and I think to take away a privilege that they've had without um them significantly violating the privilege is is unfair so I I don't even want to bring it to to talk about I don't see it as an issue um so the context behind what pushed me to do this and I have no Vendetta against open campus policies I really don't I support it I understand the the all of the positive aspects of it um was that I I observed more than a few dozen students in congregated in one location um kind of spread out a little bit in smaller groups doing all the things that I well I shouldn't say all did not witness vandalism at the time um although that could be arguable for for where they were but I I witnessed these students during the lunch hour CHS lunch hour within walking distance so inferring then that these are CHS students um smoking vaping smoking marijuana all of it winess firsthand and it bothered me enough to reach out to District staff and find out you know what are some of the reports coming in and I've heard these reports from other agencies in our community that these things are happening during the school hours and so I was concerned enough to want to hear more information about it and and how how could that even be addressed how can we how can we help Safeguard especially our most vulnerable kids from being allowed during school hours when we are supposed to be responsible for their health and safety from doing these things it can which range from drugs right smoking um loitering littering the things I listed here um from doing things during school hours that are just not appropriate for kids like these things are happening because of the open campus policy so how are okay are we with that or or just not even digging into it a little bit more to find out if there's any kind of parameter that we can help mitigate those those actions that our students are taking well you just said that you communicated with staff to find out what had been reported right and you say that so far District staff so far just this school year there have been numerous reports of off-campus fighting thefts vandalism in lering vaping smoking and general poor behavior during school hours so I wanted to see this same data so days ago I communicated with staff and um today we got an email telling us in response to my question uh what the reports have been this was interesting and I'm I'm just cutting you off for a second because this is I know the email because I got the email too and it was in direct uh opposition of what I've been told by other District staff so I I will acknowledge that well um okay I mean I don't know why they would tell you one thing and me something else so according to the email we received today and according to information I received verbally earlier Chico high school has had one documented entry in the assertive discipline tab um regarding something that happened off campus um I was told verbally that PV had maybe two episodes involving potential shoplifting at at at Safeway um this email says that PV has had one documented entry uh entry of assertive discipline um I think that maybe some of the kids who are involved in some of this kind of activity or students who don't actually really go to school and so they're just kind of maybe floating around town so totally unrelated to to the any open campus policy just bad things happening you know take children's playground for example EXC your mic is off sorry thank you I thought thought you were trying to yell at me I'm more used to you guys being yelling at me than than uh being con that you can't hear me I'm sorry let me give you a little uh some some props actually um hey look far be it for me Matt tennis to say that you know kids don't leave campus for lunch and smoke pot and and vape and use foul language and and and and behave in ways that they shouldn't okay I mean yeah I'm not going to deny that whether the the the office you know think so or not I mean yeah but in a way though you're just kind of describing Humanity yeah right I mean people go and smoke weed and do things they shouldn't do and be obnoxious and for that matter you know but but but the idea that we pin the blame for bad things that happen around town involving people who are Chico Unified students or people who maybe even kind of aren't um the idea that we would put the blame on that you know on the open campus policy and then the things that that Miss conin brought up this the impracticalities of making a change to the open campus policy I think that your point that I think is is really well taken at least for my part is that yeah we should be vigilant to monitor the behavior of our students when they're off campus and you know respond to complaints from the community you know as best we can is what I think we should do and probably leave it at that if there's no record of wrongs how can we you know be more proactive than than just being responsive when they do come along yeah I would say that the assertive discipline list is not a comprehensive list of things that are happening off campus so if I may um it seems like several board members have had conversations about safety issues with the staff and I think one of the upsides of agendize this is that we can get all this information to the public where all of us can hear it and the public can hear it as well and make a better more well-rounded decision about this um I will uh Echo what M Doby said this is I have no interest whatsoever in um closing our campuses I agree with you with well miss conin it's not feasible it's not really on the table so the way this agenda item was presented um is a little sticky maybe but that said um we probably ought to hear about what's going on we've already had a big discussion about it right it's worth having an actual complete discussion about with prepared remarks and data from staff so we can get get to the bottom of why there are disparities between what different people are hearing would it be like more appropriate rather to have it be um within the context of the open status of high school rather like discussing Behavior that's happening lunchtime I don't care what we call I mean kids kids do things before school kids do things after school it's not just a matter of the lunch hour I if we're going to take the concern to the you know like we're we're concerned about what they're doing when they're not under our watch yeah I mean before matter what this is called but if we wanted to call it you know a discussion about student behavior in the community when they're officially under Chief unified offices we could call it that and it wouldn't make a difference I think it's still conversation worth having and I think the amount of discussion we've had up here makes it pretty clear that it is a discussion worth having completely my um interest would be to adding I if we do anything to close campus which is the only way to really get it handled how do we feed them we don't have the cafeteria capacity to keep the kids on campus yeah I think that where this is coming from is that it's an issue that I I think warrants more information and a little bit more open discussion given all the information that we can get um that's just where I came from with this I'm not I have no desire I'm not like trying to forge forward with closing down our campuses because I think that's going to solve all our problems I just really wanted to get better handle on what's what's going on and how how what could we do to help mitigate it um if I may one just kind of I there's some a little bit of irony here I feel like um I I'm I'm seen by a lot of people and and frankly by myself as kind of like a parent you know Advocate maybe and isn't it parents who are normally like ringing their hands over those naughty kids you know and needing to rein that behavior in and and stuff like that but I I just don't feel that way in this situation because um it's kind of like you're looking at Humanity you know I mean these they just human beings going off and and acting inappropriately they're bad citizens um I think that we teach citizenship to uh a meaningful degree in the public school system when we you know uh salute the flag and so forth and we enforce rules you know there's ways that you're not allowed to behave on campus I think that that we do a I I I guess I think we do a respectable job on on that to go off on a on a basically what kind of amounts to a a kind of a hand ringing you know nanny any government Witch Hunt of how kids are behaving on during during lunchtime it just seems like a road that will lead nowhere to me that's all I'll say um and for clarification I suspect that we all up here consider ourselves parents is that reasonable to assume thank you so much and I'm GNA just jump in here for a moment and say we're really talking apples and oranges we have the solid data that gets reported in our area system for students that are caught doing something and disciplinary action is taken there are many many more reports that come in about students behaving in a way whether it's verified or not where we get complaints from our community that students are hanging out in an area students are doing drugs I was sitting in a meeting just this last week when the chico High Principal got called to go down to Children's Park because there was an incident happening um and when he gets there finds out it's not to go high students so we we hear lots of things from our community but then being able to prove that those are students and that discipline is taken it's just two different two different things so I think there are definitely reports there are perceptions um that our community has and and we all see that um and then there's the actual difficulty um in verifying and proving that it is a Chico Unified student and that action has then taken and like is it worth your guys's time and our administrators staff's time to to to track track that down and and only to learn that it's not even one of our one of our students is that why is that is that really in keeping with your mission you know or or I'm asking a rhetorical question I know the answer no it's not you know your mission is a whole big long list of other things that that we are asking you know our staff to do um so well I would like like our students to always represent us in a positive manner when they're out in our community but you're right I mean that doesn't always happen and that is Humanity but it doesn't mean we're not going to keep trying um we do have one public comment um so I'd like to jump to that um before we wrap up our discussion and and vote so um we have Arwin Funk signed up for this item thank you well it sounds like maybe the Coalition for reason is is Alive and Kicking at the moment I confess I read this uh this agenda item and I found it really confusing I thought an Educator's first instinct is not to educate but went straight to like an authoritarian lockdown of school campuses that is so odd to me and I don't think there's a parent in this audience that believes that you wouldn't do that we've I just don't um I'm old enough to remember during the pandemic when parents were shamed and berated for asking schools to reopen and we were accused of treating school like daycare and now you literally want to create a daycare for teenagers on these campuses there's um it sounds like you guys might be heading this direction anyway but there's a whole world of curriculum out there to coax better Behavior at a juveniles maybe that's the answer maybe you could even get creative make it a competition right the most kids who get back onto campus by X time make the schools compete with each other I don't know but um I don't think I need to say a whole lot more I think if you are going to have a discussion about this which is probably warranted I think we would agree that if there are kids out there in the community Behaving Badly there's some rationale for having that conversation and creating some kind of an incentive structure for them to behave better but I think that this particular proposal that went straight to shut down campus probably went about 10 steps too far let's talk about education first I just want to clarify that in nowhere my proposal it was confusing and it was my first time filling out this form with a real topic so it was an exercise for me but I never mentioned closing campuses I did say mitigate which could mean a lot of things so um yeah that's I'm I'm asking for us to just take a closer look at the topic um with that I feel like we've discussed this way more than we probably needed to um given that we have spotty information um provided at this time which is why I requested to agendize it um so I'm GNA call for the I'm gonna call I'm gonna I'm gonna um ask one more time are we ready to vote I'm not gonna call for a vote because the whole another vote um all right we'll do a Voice vote on this one you ready or do you have another comment question okay um I'll start because that's obvious um I I say I for agendize this item um actually let's let's roll back do we want to reward it at all or can we just we know what we want to get out of this item staff is nodding at me yes yes yes yes okay are we good everybody's fine Mr Lando I mean uh M con do you feel more comfortable what if it was worded differently I absolutely don't like the fact that the open status of the high school campus is even in there I mean is it I mean do we want to agenda agend put on the agenda talking about issues that are happening with our students in the community during school hours or during what what Tom said no mean I think during school hours is fine yeah starting at I guess 80 whatever when they start school versus that's too specific but I guess can I make a friendly Amendment then um Mr Shephard's giving me a fun face well not necessarily a face just Ed code um if we're going to agendize something that includes student discipline just Ed code relates to students the the their first step step off their Camp off their uh property to school they're ours and that that's en Force until they get home and so it's not just when you know 8:01 or or 331 just want to keep that in mind so I guess um I'd like to offer an amendment potentially friendly uh that we change the title to a discussion about safety and behavior of students during the time when their behavior is the responsibility of the school School District or something like that I want I want to consider it friendly my concern is capturing that before and after school time too because I feel like we have so much less control over that it is still it is still our responsibility yeah yeah I mean it is still our responsibility um yeah I would consider that friendly okay any further discussion on agendize this for a future meeting okay uh Doby I which way are you no you go we always go counterclockwise okay Robinson no con no landai tennis nay all right it fails with that we will go to close session thanks everybody

right at the beginning we talked about dealing with your issue dealing with issues when you were under 60. we talked about a number of issues we talked about issues that were special to you in if you're in your 60s so if you are in your 60s now you should really watch that one uh things like dealing with um now that you've started you've got tax referred money that you now can take out without a penalty you get Social Security you get a bunch of issues dealing with your 70s when you're starting to think about you know maybe what thinking about whether you want need to change the place where you live you want to be thinking ahead about it whether whether you're ever going to need Mass health later on dealing um we talked specifically about taxes because it was April and on the fourth episode then we talked about life in your 80s we spent time talking about why you can always qualify for Mass Health probably one of the most common issues that I talk to folks about we talked about the last year of your life which no one wants to talk about which is probably one of the most important seminars that you can watch we talked about what happens after you die and what needs to happen the post-mortem to-do list we talked about trust Administration um last month and then for this episode we are talking about what you probably thought that you came to your lawyer to talk about in the first place which is kind of what is your basic estate plan specifically it's all about the kid and the grandkids later we're going to talk about Medicare in November because that's when it's Medicare you know enrollment time and then we're going to talk about plan giving or giving as well as tax planning in December so we're always talking about my friends Peter or Frank and Mary and their kids Peter Paul and Mary Jr um we're talking about them typically when we're talking about estate planning we're assuming that the basic estate plan is that if one of them dies all the assets go to the other for purposes of this presentation we're assuming that Frank's dead and therefore the planning that we need to do really is about what happens after Mary dies before or after Mary dies we're assuming that they have a house which is worth about four hundred thousand dollars that they've got a cottage someplace that's worth another four hundred thousand dollars that Mary has an IRA worth a hundred or worth 300 that she's got savings worth 200 their total assets are a million three obviously your situation is not going to be just like occurs um so you're going to to really kind of focus on your situation the underlying subtext here is you need to talk to a lawyer you need to talk to alert talk to them about your situation what is unique about it and how to handle your asset your own asset situation um first before we talk about the way the ways the issues that you might or the problems that you might have and the way you ways you might want to get around them I'm going to talk about the basic what happens if Mary who had the assets that I just went through died and had no will well um regarding her um her Ira she would have needed to name a death beneficiary or she would have been asked to name a death beneficiary well what if she didn't what if these assets she just died and left no will and all these assets were passing through her estate what would happen in that case uh is that the assets would get divided equally and so if Mary's basic estate plan is that when she dies she wants everything to be divided equally that's what's going to happen anyway whether she has a will or not now if there are children if there if any one of her children has pre-deceased her then under current law that that child's children would receive that pre-dices child's share interestingly by by the way there is this kind of bizarre part about the current law that if two of her children had pre-deceased her it's a Peter pre-deceased since her leaving three kids and Paul predeceases her leaving two kids so that there were a total of five grandchildren the way that the assets would get divided would be that Peters and Paul shares would be combined and then the assets would be divided by five it is not that Peter's share would be divided by three and Paul share would be divided by two so everybody would end up getting that's a bizarre little piece of the law uh if there is no will and therefore if you have if if your goal is to make sure that if any one of your children has pre-deceased shoot that child share goes to that child's children you want to have that you need to have handle that through a will um if any of the children were under 18 and there were no will then that child's share would end up getting held in an account that the Probate Court would order be created uh the that that person under 18 would have a guardian uh and that Guardian would have access to those funds and at the time that that child was age 18 the child would get all the funds another reason why in many cases you don't want to be a rely playing on dying without a will and using this system because in that situation you if you've got any kind of significant amount of assets you're going to end up with an 18 year old getting a lot of money at some point maybe not the best idea if there are no children then in Mary's assets would be divided among her siblings if this is as is not uncommon her siblings have died of those assets each of that each sibling's children would receive the share that would have gone to that sibling etc etc so the point is there is always a system and the assets are always going to get divided among typically among family members if you die without a will it is inconceivable to me that those assets would end up going to the state oftentimes people will say I need a will because otherwise the assets will go to the state no if there is money I've been doing this for 43 years and I can tell you if there's money there will always be a cousin there will always be somebody who will show up looking for that money so the question only is it when you die is that who you want to have get the money these cousins that you've never heard of as opposed to leaving the money someplace else so that's the kind of the basic system so in terms of what what Mary would be want to be dealing with if her if if all other things being equal she would simply want her assets to be divided equally among the three kids um is well what if one of those kids has problems by the way one of the other issues that comes up is of course if Mary does want the assets to be divided unequally among the three kids then for sure she needs a will or some mechanism to make sure that she is not going to end up dying and having these assets passed through intestate where there's no will and therefore getting divided equally among the kids but what if for example you've got that daughter-in-law that you never liked in the first place and that really isn't getting along very well with your son and you're just not sure you're just not sure if in the long run that marriage is going to last so the question is what can you do about that now the most common answer it is assumed uh is to have the share that would have gone to Peter in that case going to trust for Peter's benefit but there are a couple of caveats to that I just want you to be clear on them um first of all uh the the law in Massachusetts and this varies by state so so a piece of your decision regarding how to deal with this would relate to where your son lives in what state your son lives and I know this sounds like it's pretty granular but you you this could really change your estate planning if your son or your daughter is in in a in a depending on what state they're in in Massachusetts if your dog if your daughter-in-law divorced your son and the question was how the assets would be divided up in general um the the so-called marital estate the estate that's going to be getting divided up by the uh Probate Judge would consist simply of the assets that were owned by one or both of them and the assumption would be in general that other assets would not get um get considered however there is an assumption in Massachusetts that the division of assets needs to be Equitable not necessarily equal so if you died and left a lot of money um to Peter or even in trust for Peter um the court could consider whether as a result of that those funds that are in trust for him uh his basic situation is such that he's he's going to be otherwise well-off enough that he doesn't deserve to get 50 of the assets maybe he's on no they the judge would never say well he's not going to get any of the assets but the judge might say he's going to get 45 or 40 percent of the assets depending on how that trust is worded and depending especially on what his access is to those assets whether he has real whether those assets are really accessible to him whether it's in trust or not is an issue but the real question is accessibility so when you're thinking about those issues and you're worried that there might be a contest especially if there's quite a bit of money involved right then what you may want to think about is who should be the best who would be the best trustee for Peter's benefit would it really be a sibling right or would it better would it be better if it were a professional trustee so that the court were saying well you know this it it isn't like this is all a sham and your brother's got all the money and he's just going to give it to you after the divorce right if so the question is should there be a professional trustee should there be some limits on the amount of the distribution if the courts issue is are the distribution is the division of assets Equitable then that's going to be affected by whether Peter or the trustee has the discretion to give Peter a million dollars out of the million dollars that is being held for him right in trust versus a hundred thousand dollars or versus so much per year so you could put those kinds of limitations thereby reducing the chance that a judge is going to say using that doctrine of Equitable not equal that the existence of those funds even in trust are going to affect how the assets get divided finally another kind of easier solution is simply give Peter's a share to the grandchildren or specified that if Peter if at the time of your death Peter is Peter is going through a divorce that the Assets in that case would go directly to the grandchildren or in trust for the benefit of the grandchildren now in that situation you probably don't want to name Peter as the trustee of that trust you probably want to name one of your other children the the aunt or the Uncle Paul or Mary Jr as the trustee of that trust so the point is if that issue is of concern to you then you really need to spend some time figuring out how to how to best insulate the money that you are going to really want to be leaving to Peter and and probably to the grandchildren in the event that that situation occurs how about disability let's say that Paul has a disability of some kind uh and and her his mother is trying to make sure that the assets that she is get leaving him as a result of her death do not uh inadvertently cause them to be disqualified for some government benefits and the disqualification may end up costing him more than the assets that Mary was giving him would have benefited benefited him so the the question to ask yourself in that case and it might really involve having a conversation with your child is what what is his situation what is the nature of his disability and what kind of government programs are is he on for example if he's on SSDI Social Security disability income because he showed to the Social Security Administration uh that first of all he had worked enough quarters to be eligible for SSDI and secondly that he's totally and permanently disabled so that he cannot get substantial gainful employment for the rest of his life if that's his situation then his his social security check the SSDI check would not be affected at all by other income that he had or other assets that he had so you could leave him a million dollars and he would still get the exact same Social Security disability check you could leave a trust fund for him that was paying him ten thousand dollars a month it would not affect his Social Security disability check the only thing that would affect his SSDI monthly payment would be if he were working himself in deriving so-called earned income then that earned income would be could very well affect whether his SSDI checks continued if on the other hand uh PR Paul is on Mass health or you're concerned that Paul might end up needing Mass health in the future well that's a program that is asset sensitive that he would not be eligible for uh if he were if he had a substantial amount of assets and that if he is younger he would not be eligible for if he was if his income was higher than certain income criteria so in that situation you may very well want to make sure that assets that would have gone to Paul are going to go and Trust for his benefit you could you probably would just want to name Peter or or or Mary Jr you could name a relative as a trustee um if if he is getting if he is on SSI and people constantly confuse SSI supplemental security income with with Social Security disability income two completely different programs meant to do two different things and and therefore having two different sets of regulations SSDI Social Security disability income is as I mentioned meant to take care of somebody who was gainfully employed worked enough quarters to to as to be otherwise eligible just like you need to have worked enough quotas to be eligible for Social Security when he retires but then demonstrates that because of accident or sickness he is totally and permanently disabled SSI supplemental security income is available to anyone who can demonstrate that they are poor uh and poor there is a very low bar to you know what the income is that you can have in order to demonstrate that you are really poor because the point of the SSI check the supplemental security income check is to supplement your income up to that amount up to that poverty amount but that poverty amount for a single person in Massachusetts going to be about 900 a month so it's a very very low number so so if you're if your child is on SSI then any other income that he receives is is basically counted against him because the point of the SSI check is to take the amount of income that he has and supplement his income up to this magic number of say nine hundred dollars a month so if he was actually if you actually left him trust money in which he was guaranteed a check of so much per month that money is going to get subtracted dollar for dollar from the from the amount that he's going to get on SSI so you want to be really careful about that typically in that case you would create a so-called supplemental Needs Trust that would specify that the whole point of the trust is just to supplement his needs SSI also has some specific criteria that you cannot have that trust paying for his food clothing or shelter um because the the assumption is that if he's got that that was the point of the SSI check in the first place so you want to be really careful if your son is on SSI or your son or your daughter or if you think that later on they may need to qualify for MassHealth and finally um as I mentioned um you would you need to deal with this housing issue um you you also probably because this could last for a long time while Paul is alive uh you probably want to name a successor trustee uh in the event that the initial trustee that you name no longer can serve because this could go for a long time you also want to deal with final distributions in this case where's the rest of the money going to go uh after Paul dies finally let's say that Mary does not have a disability and doesn't have a spouse who's a problem but has some kind of problem whether it is just that she just isn't great with money and she's got a ton of creditors maybe one of those creditors is the IRS right the kind of the worst credit to have um maybe she's got a job in which there is significant potential liability I always think about nurses the liability derived from a job is typically derived from a job in which you can be accused of hurting somebody and therefore causing them pain and suffering because there is kind of No Limit to the amount of money that can be awarded to somebody an aggrieved person for pain and suffering nurses are just you know Prime candidates for that kind of suit nurses doctors anybody that is in a profession where they're actually touching people right so it may be that that's your concern or it may be just a concern that you know she's you're concerned about kind of protecting Mary from herself maybe she's got a drug problem maybe she's got any number of other maybe maybe you're not crazy about the guys that she's hanging around with if for any number of reasons you may want to put some controls on those funds in that case once again your question is going to be you know is the sibling appropriate it has been my experience and once again I've done a lot of this kind kind of work it has been my experience that in those cases often another sibling is not the best person because typically if Mary's got some issues Mary has also got some issues with those other siblings and there is there there in many cases there is bad blood so your ideal trustee is often a third party now in these situations it's often hard to find a prison who's going to be the trustee because if Mary's got issues they don't want to deal with Mary so that may be a real problem I mean there are some cases where people will actually name a lawyer to be the trustee lawyers are in an incredibly expensive trustees so you really want to Only Name the lawyer as the last resort right but if nobody else is there to do it or if if Mary is a litigious kind of person so you think she may be threatening suit all the time in that case the lawyer may be the ideal trustee once again in that situation you want to deal with you know where is the money ultimately going to go what is the final distribution after Mary died because there could very well be money left there after she dies then there are the grandchildren and there's also often a lot of discussion about well you know I really want to leave some money to the grandchildren I want to pay for their college education I want to do a lot of stuff for them well remember first of all if you're if your goal is to pay for their college education remember that by leaving them a big chunk of money even if it is in trust for their benefit and even if that trust specifies that that money can't be paid to them until they are above a particular age like college age above 22.

uh we'll start off the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance and for that I think we have a volunteer here so to do and just stand up Daniel stand up and face the flag and everyone stand up and just go ahead when you're ready and justice for all great thank you nice job okay without this meeting will commence the first item on the agenda is citizens participation so if there's anybody here for Citizens participation please come forward and if there's anyone on the screen that please use the raise hand function so we could see that you want to speak all right go ahead Steve yeah Steve Morgan 136 Concord Street I'm here tonight to give you an update on the problems over at my home regarding my boundary I had a meeting this week after learning people were trying to install a gate into my yard and change the fence materials at a meeting with the contractor and the police chief the project manager and the towns project manager and you know we met at 12 30 on Wednesday and so we came to an agreement on a path forward to use the correct materials for the plan to not put a gate into my property where it wasn't on the plan and to put the fence essentially where it was before which is all I've ever asked to have happen so I thought we were done with this issue not less than three or four hours later I got Paul Kendall chiming in saying oh you got to remove your signs and you're you know we're we're having a problem still so I don't know why he's out of step with the police chief and everyone else on the project but that was that was yesterday um so by this morning while I'm at work apparently the town manager came to my home claiming he was coming to see me but he knew I wasn't there said I wasn't there and then he removed my signs and took him to the police station now the town manager was well aware that he was served in no trespass on behalf of the town those no trespasses are good for one year you know this is nonsense because even if the sign's not there the trespass is on record down in the clerk's office and the town is well aware of it so I'm hopeful that the project will put the fence back where it was where it belongs and we'll be done with this issue but apparently these Shenanigans are still happening including from the town manager while he knows I'm not home so I'm going to pick up my signs I'm going to put them back and for anybody who wants to go there nobody's taking me up in my offer there are still multiple fence posts in the ground people can see where the fence was despite the self-help by the project and we all know where the fence was so um I'm supportive of getting the sign put back they've marked the line I thought we were done with this but yet sure we're still not done all right Steve so I can concerned so I'm not familiar with all the details but I think generally my understanding is that there is uh on the town's Viewpoint a different opinion of that that's been that's our legal and And discussing things with the town manager he is um his plan is to discuss this with you and try to come to a resolution so we're still there trying to resolve it I uh you know I'm not going to speak to the details back and forth but I think there's reasons for the town's position and action so I would just urge all parties to try to resolve this and mcclebee and I think that would be great and um Michael is has repeated to me that he's agreeable to meet with you I think he wanted to meet with you today I'd take him in good faith maybe maybe he should reach out maybe he should stop blocking email from me which he's been doing for years um you know you can't you can't have people trying to reach out to you when you can't communicate well I think so and they don't take the time to call you yeah I'm not going to address whether the town manager is doing that or not but I think okay but I think it'd be good if you continue these discussions with Town officials and resolved this because I could tell you that we have our own legal I thought the police chief was a pretty good official and when I talked to her today at noon she was left off the email even though she was the senior person at the meeting on behalf of the police force and she was left off and she said I thought we agreed on this yesterday and I said well apparently everybody didn't agree and she said that's my understanding when we left them right so hopefully we'll come to a resolution and uh happy to talk to anybody who wants to talk to me great as long as the fence goes back where it was I think we're done which I think we agreed to but somehow we keep should be or shouldn't be but I'm I'm happy to talk about it again okay and it's one year signs of good signs or no signs it's in the clerk's office it's good for one year so thank you for your time all right thank you Steve okay anyone else for Citizens participation okay Mark I think you can unmute yourself is that right so go ahead Mark Nas [Music] and no I could add things to that to what he what's going on there what I want uh to the town manager to his toe now that yours um what you call the town manager's um oh God I forgot what it is announcements I'm sorry what'd you say Mark I apologize what do you title your child manager's um variety of things that are around the town is um are you are you referring to the newsletter yes okay yes I should I should know it shouldn't I especially when you when uh one one citizens had a Halloween black and white scarce scared photo of themselves on the uh the citizen shot out there good kind of kind of looked like the pond went out in my house and hey Mark we just we just have a lot of items on the agenda do you have a question or a point you want to make yes oh good is thinking the town manager reported me in the community shout out oh very nice I know how how he actually got rolling and the one and only time I became modest and put myself out there I think that's how it got out there isn't that right Mr Town manager Mark you'd be surprised you've got a few fans out there nobody can get it nobody can question your dedication to the town all right so yeah I think I thank you for that and um all else um give me an update how my dad is he's gonna he's a little bit stronger and and well he's still alive it's been uh about seven to nine years taking care of him he's got those bonuses ahead of them 98 years old and um he's still kicking all right thanks Mark that is it for that and I understand where Steve's coming from and they should help go to the planning board the Mendez School Bill and convenience combined look at this at the plans at the beginning thank you great thanks Mark okay so without there's no one further for Citizens participation um I'm going to move the first item on our agenda which is Ashland day presentations and uh Mr mignani will start us off on that one thank you Mr chair we have a couple of tidy things to tidy things up from Ashland day Reno 2023. so I'm going to go up to the front podium and and while you're doing that I just want to say we've got a great group of Scouts here tonight so it's good to see all you folks and um so let's uh I just I don't know if the citizens can see but the room is full of Boy Scouts at the moment so it's good to see you guys it's the dedication of the Boy Scouts Joe I think you got to get closer to microphone yeah oh that's right the 12-inch rule yeah that one foot rule sometimes I use my old police voice and it shatters everything so gotta be careful um this award is citizen of the Year award it was named after uh Rick calgalani and it was the dedication of Mr galani to the town of Ashland over the years of service not only as a firefighter but as a citizen Town who got himself involved in many projects that you see around town the gazebo The Pavilion down at Stone Park the Montenegro square and back in 1986 he and Benny Montenegro that they were the original founders of Ashland day so just to give you a brief history because how many here were born before 1986.

per open meeting law any member of the public may make an audio or video recording of this meeting gctv is recording this meeting and we will move right into our agenda which starts with a roll call and a call to order please secretary ekstrom I am here I'm Vice chair Martini here sure priority here number wall here Mary Gardner here all are present and we have a quorum wonderful uh thank you everyone for being here uh just a reminder and I will remind again when we get to the section of the agenda about public comment um and the chat uh the chat function is not a part of these meetings in fact if it's used for any discussion by anyone the meeting can be in declared declared in violation of open meeting law but we will allow folks to indicate in the chat if they're so able when we get to public comment to give their name um at that time in the chat box and we will go from there we'll also take public comment verbally uh if folks aren't able to put it in the chapter so we are here for uh the first part of our agenda item number two is a public discussion uh with the Massachusetts Association of school committees um on our superintendency transition and um I just want to give a little bit of uh introduction um of where we're at um so uh in August uh superintendent DeBarge uh informed the school committee that she planned to retire at the end of this Academic Year June 30 2024 being her final day as our superintendent and it pains me to say that I will say that out loud and publicly um and we uh it had a brief discussion um at that time as a school committee um and we're pretty unanimous in in the fact that we wanted to um seek the advice uh as our next step from masc uh the masc the Massachusetts Association of school committees is a a non-profit uh I guess I would call it a professional organization that helps to guide School Committee Member School committees um with all kinds of things related to services and superintendency and other personnel and issues that come before school committees I know that I've sought Liz's guidance on a number of things that we have come to the Forefront for us and when we last searched for a superintendent and we were so lucky to find superintendent DeBarge uh the masc did run uh the search for us uh in that regard um and so we um we I want to get some um some input from you Liz before I turn it over to other folks to ask questions or give comment um and if you could talk a little bit about if I've missed anything about what masc does for school committees or for us specifically or anything else you'd want to add there and then any input what we're really looking for is your guidance your expertise your input um on what a school district like Greenfield does in this situation how we move forward so I'll let's turn it over to you thank you thank you and thank you for having me us I know Glenn is planning to come um so we're a member driven organization we exist for school committees and and by the um the dues we collect from school committees we provide services to school committees including superintendent search policy assistance which Christine has really put me on the I'm on the back burner but she's been moving full steam ahead with it so uh we got hung up for quite a while but she's been moving along really well with that work um we do trainings as you well know and we are available for anything and everything that comes along the way in terms of questions or concerns or assistance that's why we exist um I will say it was a pleasure doing the search with Gene chairing that committee she did a wonderful job and I could not have been more thrilled to be honest when um Christine was hired you were very lucky to get her and I know she's done a wonderful job there um there's a few things around superintendent searches that we traditionally like to share with school committees and first and foremost is you'll remember we did a full-blown process last time involving community and a large search committee and the whole the whole um realm of superintendent searches it was laborious and time consuming and the end result was wonderful the law says that school committees must hire a superintendent and that's where it stops it's very broad as I've heard Glenn say um last night at a meeting we were in about a superintendent search if you decided tonight that you wanted to vote to hire someone I won't say me but someone as a superintendent that's well within your legal authority to do that now having said that we know you all have Community constituencies School community and Greenfield Community constituents that would like to have probably some say in the process or at least have the opportunity to be heard we are we often times the first thing we do is encourage School committees if they have a strong interim sorry internal candidate to consider that person either as an interim or giving them an initial contract to sort of you know feel out how the the relationship will work between the committee and the new and the candidate you have many added benefits there someone who is internal doesn't have to come in and spend 90 120 or longer days getting to know the players getting to know folks in the community getting to understand how the district Works they literally you know hit the ground running they're ready to go because they know how your District functions and who within that District makes things happen um it's always a win we've experienced it's always been a win-win situation for districts when they do that they don't have to deal with that sort of long drawn out process and they they in in our experience always get somebody who's already committed to the work in the district so there's that now I know that there's a couple of new members here so I'll explain the superintendent search process there is there are a number of firms who do superintendent search work professional firms as well as masc the cost for such a search can range from anywhere from ten thousand five hundred to about sixty thousand dollars depending on who you hire um any sperm that you would be interested in hiring you should be sure of a couple of things and one is that that someone from that firm will be with you every step of the way um through the process that they're not they don't sort of come in occasionally and check on the work they've assigned you to do but they're there right by your side doing the work and that you don't pay anybody until you have a successful negotiated signed contract with a candidate um masc I think goes a step further than most that I'm trying to sell anything here um but you should also be sure if you're interested in doing a full search and you talk to any other firms that um within the first two years if anything happens with the candidates so that they're no longer in the district that they will come back and do that search for you at no cost that's really considered an unsuccessful search at that point um it can take anywhere from depending on how committed you are to an expedited search from um three months to four or five months is more typical it involves a lot of moving pieces as Gene will recall Tina and I got to be very close during that period of time yes so um having heard that you do have someone in District who who is of interest to you we would certainly encourage that you pursue that to whatever degree your most comfortable pursuing and it's always a healthy option for the district and if I'd go further and say if if Christine has been that individual's mentor um and sees that individual as someone who'd be successful I would put some solid stock into that she's a good one sad to see her leaving thank you Liz I did get an email from Glenn that he said the link in the agenda was not working and I resent that link to him but I don't know if either remember extra or if Liz if you could also assist it's been a few minutes now and he's not on and he's not responding to me so I'm sorry that he's having trouble and I know exactly how I know exactly how to help hold the phone okay no worries no worries um and this you know this is really intended to be a discussion and I guess one thing I did forget um to mention as a part of it the introduction and maybe it's fine to mention now is that um our school committee does have a policy um on the the um Personnel that we do directly hire which includes the superintendent assistant superintendent the director of people Services the business manager um and I believe the registrar or yeah um and I think that's the full list that we can do appointments to those um positions so we should be aware that um that is a possible option uh for us and um I want to actually I do want to give superintendent to barge time to to speak a little bit but I actually want to um we'll wait until Liz uh is off the phone with Glenn um but I did want to if there's comments or questions from anyone right now um it would be great if uh we could we could move on and talk a little bit amongst ourselves about uh comments or questions we want to have answered tonight if anyone wants to jump in now I would just like to add that the time that it takes to do a superintendent search is unbelievable there are multiple meetings every week where you interview candidates you have to have a search committee which takes a lot of time to put together it you know it if you want to do a search you really do need to have somebody with a lot of time to spend on on the project uh as Liz said she and I got to know each other quite well through the whole process because it takes an unbelievable amount of time thanks Gene yes it is um and I I guess um well this is back oh Glenn's here sorry you had trouble Glenn I hope I'm sorry and I'm the person who has no patience for uh for technology that acts up but thank you uh Liz had a backdoor strategy celebrity okay great well I'm glad you're with us um Liz has already given us a little bit of an introduction to um where we're at no you know you and I have spoken briefly about this uh as well um and if you would want to add anything uh I think it would be appropriate now to hear from you regarding um our situation here in Greenfield with a superintendent who's um very kindly given us an additional year after they said they're no longer that they're going to retire um which is great um but also you know moving forward uh what masc is seeing out there and what you would suggest um for us at this point well what we always suggest first is to look in-house because the presence of a strong internal candidate will affect the size of your pool at the same time barring a catastrophe or a scandal or a major crisis uh the community will follow the lead of the school committee assuming there's nothing else bad going on I mean if there was a two million dollar budget deficit and and uh and and the business manager just took off with the money uh you wouldn't uh you wouldn't have that kind of support but in the case of what green feels done over the past few years uh you either your community will follow your lead so you have as much discretion in the world about what you want to do and about half of our districts don't even amount to search they will just go ahead and make a promotion assuming that the person they're promoting is someone that will be accepted and assuming that it's someone that the school committee has confidence in in other words you don't just promote the most senior person standing you promote someone who may have been groomed or someone who's ready and the public invariably accepts it then that happens in about half of the cases in about 25 percent of the cases there are internal candidates and they uh the school committee wants to see how they fare in light of what else is out there and then in 25 of the cases they just look outside because that's what they need to do let's see the uh but but we have uh we have advised school districts and and I don't know what your situation is uh other than what you've explained to me briefly uh if you have some an internal candidate in whom you have confidence that candidate will have a head start and will probably be or is because I I know what I know well I know who your current superintendent is um that person is is uh if that person is is has been mentored by the outgoing superintendent as the confidence of the outgoing superintendent uh you save yourself a lot of time about worrying about you know there are three people in the community who say we have to do an Intergalactic search and see what's out there there are a few people who want to be superintendents now and uh a lot of the people that do from out of state and most of our out-of-state candidates are retiring out of state and you know most of them figure okay I'm retiring in in Peoria Illinois hey Greenfield quality of quality of life is good out there I think I'll go to Greenfield for three years how hard can it be and they just have no idea what a superintendency is is like in another state so I I would say if you have confidence in what you have internally you should make the move with confidence and the community will feel it and they will support you otherwise you could you could start a search if you wanted to thank you I think that's a good introduction Glenn I appreciate that perspective um and I at this point since you're both here and we've gotten the groundwork laid I really would want to open it up to school committee members to share questions and comments for these folks yes please mayor go ahead okay welcome Liz and Glenn um I um I know that there are vacancies in and around us a lot of them I'm wondering if you have a sense of what the pool would be if for some reason or whether we decided to do a search are we in a highly competitive situation are we um you know one more uh officiable type of thing no one's going to be afraid of of Greenfield this isn't like one of those districts where people can see oh Greenfield never go there no that's that's not the situation that you're in uh the pools are not as big as they were a generation ago and fewer people want to step up and do it it's difficult work and uh it can be very rewarding but it but many superintendents do the Lord's work without a lot of recognition you know parents have you you have parents who are single constituency people they're concerned with their child and uh nobody else's child and sometimes they put a lot of pressure on superintendents I don't know what your labor situation is like uh in terms of your contract that's always a challenge it's tougher than it used to be uh and then uh I I think I think you're in good shape and I think people would not be hesitant to apply to Greenfield but there just aren't that many people out there who would want to do it and you'd be competing with Amherst uh right who else is out there I'm East Hampton so proudly um did I hear Hampshire Regional was also searching I I don't know I haven't seen anything officially on that yet um but inches week to week I don't have any inside information I just you know thought I heard Scott a lot about it yeah this would be my third or fourth superintendent search over several years of being a school Committee Member off and on so um that they're not they're not easy to do uh member wall is exactly right you know they are time consuming they are not always as effective as we would like them to be given whatever pool decides to to uh member of the pool of search people who are searching come forward so I would suggest you I I was I wanted a sense of in essence what the market was and thank you for your for your honest answer I appreciate that yeah there we don't have the number starting up to the the numbers that we had last year for some reason uh post covert a lot of people had figured okay we've gone through covert now now I will retire or go to do something else uh if you do elect someone that you want to promote or someone that you like I would make sure that you have a commitment from that person and a mutually uh agreeable contract that will keep that in Greenfield you don't want to be doing this again in three years [Music] thank you um I see that secretary Eckstrom has her hand up please go ahead Susan so that we aren't in a place that that people sorry I just want to make sure I wasn't muted uh we aren't in a place that that people would think oh God not going to Greenfield um I don't know that that's always been the case since I've been on the school committee do you feel like that's something that is true now because of the work that Christine has done or um just I don't know for some other random reason I would say that there has been a significant increase in The credibility of the district over the last three to four years okay well thank you um uh other questions or comments from the school committee I have a couple but I don't want to jump in I want others to have a chance yeah please uh member Johnson go ahead if we did want to move forward with an internal candidate what would be the process you you might want to interview the internal candidate just for the purpose of resolving any issues that you might have and if you if you did that and even if you didn't you could simply promote the internal candidates subject to the successful negotiation of a mutually agreeable contract of employment it's that simple you could you could do that and hire Liz or me tonight in the same process as your superintendent would we need to take a vote in a public session to invite that person to come for the interview and I would interview the candidate in public I do it on a Saturday morning when people are more relaxed that's an interesting I like I like that idea I would not have thought of that so thank you Glenn um you know we can share with you even for internal or even external candidates and you could you could go through a very rigorous interview in addition to give you the confidence that you might be looking for I would say for the sake of credibility and that not that we are in uncredible in this Community I would think that the community itself as you said would follow suit more easily if we did a public inner some sort of interview process however we decided to design it uh with uh our internal candidate or internal candidates if there are others who want to step forward and that way you could truthfully say to your community yeah be transparently brought the community forward for brought the candidate forward for a public interview yeah ask some very thoughtful questions requiring really good substance and knowledge of the candidate and uh the candidate showed us that uh the candidate is ready or the candidate is not ready whatever whatever the interview shows but there have been a number of districts that have and we've had a half a dozen districts over the past two or three years who've done the internal uh interview for the purpose of establishing uh what they suspected but maybe couldn't confirm without doing the interview uh please remember Denise go ahead hi Glenn and Liz I had a question similar to um member John Smith odd's question but on the opposite end if we decide to do a superintendent search um would you be the one to help us find a firm and then would we uh interview the firm and would we choose the firm publicly or is that something that we would do privately we have a list of the people who do this work it's available to any member district so we would strongly suggest if you are going to do a search and you're looking at a firm we'd strongly suggest that you talk to them make sure that they will I wouldn't pay anybody until you have a signed contract what's going to happen is if the search fails a search consultant is more likely to blame you than themselves you know what do you expect from me you're a terrible District of that kind of stuff uh candidates didn't want to go to your District it's not my fault you might hear that uh but I suggest that you interview representatives of the firms that you're looking at there are a number of them out there that do this work uh some inside and some outside of Massachusetts and to follow up it is all a public process Elizabeth okay thank you other questions or comments from the school committee all right I'm going to jump in because I have a couple more um are you kind of uh touched on this I think um I guess you kind of answered this one so I'll skip to to my other question um can you tell me uh mafc folks a little bit about what we can um be doing that's more big picture than selecting a new superintendent I'm wondering about specifically how the school committee can support um our district leadership in um you know the the building blocks of secession planning so getting um our our district leaders and admin admins who are interested in moving into central office jobs are moving up within the central office how do school committees support that work and make sure that the district has the tools they need so when we have strong folks in District already we can promote um their their professional development and help to keep some of that uh District strength internally uh if you could answer that in any way I would suggest you first of all take a look at the concept called distributive leadership where the people in leadership share their responsibilities with others and at the same time higher with the sense of building a leadership track so for example if you are promoting an assistant superintendent to the superintendency are your principles prepared to move into the central office in some way uh is the special education coordinator a lot of superintendencies come out of special education I was saying that uh are they given an opportunity to expand their uh their roles and responsibilities do they uh are they allowed to represent the district from time to time do they lead projects like uh discrete uh strategic planning well curriculum selection do they serve on hiring committees and do they have exposure to the kinds of things that good leaders look for in their staff and including those those Concepts those are all part of the sort of the Pyramid of of distributive leadership where everybody gets a chance to uh to lead it's it's why a lot of school committees for example empower the vice chair and the secretary to uh to really in most of our cities the vice chair appoints the Committees which is the city thing and I you're muted if you could repeat that Glenn thank you um you said the vice chair of the school committees appoints the the subcommittees in most of our cities the vice chair of the school committee and the vice Chair by the way is created in law so the vice chair of the school committee uh would appoint the Committees because the chair of the school committee is often the mayor and the mayor's busy doing other things so that's an opportunity to uh to uh relieve in most of our cities the Mayors on the school committee and in most of those cities the mayor is the chair of the school committee so that's why you see the vice chair having some specific Authority I see that interesting okay that's very helpful thank you Liz would you add anything yeah I was just going to add that I know your Charter is a bit different in in Greenfield I know um with the Chairman's chairpersonship I think that um I think that there would be a conversation with the current leader and with the next leader about you know sort of that idea of distributive leadership and how that works um in the district I'd be surprised that it doesn't work already although I don't know um knowing Christine um it's been a pleasure to work with by the way and we don't get to say that enough I think so I'm happy to be able to do that and I think that's the key to succession planning thank you thank you okay I'm gonna ask for any other questions or comments from the school committee before we move on to have superintendent DeBarge speak anyone else have questions for masc or comments they want to make in general awesome so I know Christine and I oh please can anybody tell me how Doris Doyle is doing she's still in town Doris Doyle I yeah mayor go ahead I haven't heard it again let me see I oddly enough I was going into the grocery store shortly after I left work today and Doris and her husband Bill were coming out and I'm here to say they're both standing and they are fine they were complaining about the heat which is a particularly Yankee thing to do I am not one I thought the heat was wonderful but they're doing fine and if I'd known that I was uh if I thought about it and knew that you had a connection then yeah but no Doris is Doris they're great yeah store in the uh route 5. say that again Glenn my distant Cousin Eddie lidwack is he's still running his little tchotchke store at this uh that I can't tell you it doesn't ring that's not a name I know either yeah yeah they used to be regulars I will say this Glenn I go all the way back to Eileen Turok so well I always look forward to meeting only seeing whenever I was in Greenfield and Doris was one of them oh yeah she's she's fine thank you So Christine um you and I spoke about you wanted an opportunity to address this situation from the standpoint of not hey I'm retiring but the standpoint of hey here's here's my input on um our assistant superintendent who we've you know that I don't want to call her the elephant in the room because she's anything about the elephant of the room this has been rather a public discussion um but uh it would be great to hear your thoughts on the process as well as um on askp well I appreciate it Liz Liz's comment about um you know the distribute distributive leadership already happening because it it is in varying degrees and [Music] um you know when I was coming up through my administrative positions I was extraordinarily fortunate to have someone who worked with me and always said you know what do you want to do what do you see yourself doing and whatever ridiculous job I told her I wanted to do like you know one day be a superintendent she said all right we're gonna do what we need to do to get you there if that's where you want to go and so you know that that is a conversation Karen and I had um you know you ever see do you ever see this and she said maybe I do so I said all right then we're gonna make sure you can do you can do it if that's what you want to do and we've said the same to all the other administrators what do you see yourself doing we'll make sure we give you some opportunity to grow into that future role and we do support people who want to do that um I am 100 plus I don't even know how many percentages I can share um confident that Karen can take over this District we do any of you who've listened to us have a conversation for more than 10 minutes know that we do everything like as a team um The Good Fortune for her is ultimately she can kick something up if she doesn't want to have to make the decision like snow days but um you know that that by the way ultimate worst job ever is calling snow days but um we we do all critical decision making as a team we take care of the district together ultimately it is always my decision it's always my responsibility it's always my fault but um I can't and we also quite frankly live by the Mantra you know if I get hit by a bus somebody else has to know where all my stuff is and so we do share that as morbid as it is we do share our work because you don't know what's next in life so um I am I am supremely confident that she can do the job you know as someone who's who is retiring um it's it's a wonderful gift that I have from my family that I can retire at the age I will be and the experience that I've had but it's also sad because there's so much incredible work that's happening and we just you know the Strategic plan and the reimagining the schools and just I I can't even articulate all of the work that's happening and to know that there is the potential that that would continue without a speed bump is an incredible gift that you folks as this school committee can give the people who work here there have been three years of Blood Sweat and Tears that have gone into changes in this district and um to be quite pragmatic it would be a waste of time and money to have something change um but even more so to honor and respect the work that has been done by everyone in this district and I mean every single staffed person regardless of the position and to just collect them not worry about this and keep doing the work and know that you are all committed to what's been in place and what they've spent the last three years doing um I believe would be an incredible statement to the school's community and you've gotten emails from staff who feel like Karen can continue on the work that they've been doing and she's respected in this community and she lives here I don't know how much more committed you can get um so I don't know all right I can't say enough but I think you've already figured that out thank you I appreciate that um and I would also uh you know these processes can be they have to be public which we all can appreciate the reasons why um and it does become at times uh a little bit uncomfortable for all involved to to manage that process but I do want to um give uh assistant superintendent patnode an opportunity to just address her level of interest in this job I I know what she and I have talked about one-on-one um and Karen if you uh would be so kind as to just give us a sense of where you're at um in this process now I'd appreciate it sure um as Christine says I've been in Greenfield a long time I live here committed to the students of this District it'll be my 14th year here in greenfields I've held many hats and roles I started out as a high school teacher was an assistant principal was a principal and now in this role and I'm very interested in progressing to the next steps um I that's where I see my future in education being and where I'd love to have my career go and it would just fill my heart if I could do it here because I am truly committed to Greenfield and want to see all the good things that we've started and see all the successes that are to come with all of the work we've done thank you I appreciate that um any last comments questions suggestions from the school committee and then if they're if if we're done with um the folks from masc I would allow them to leave or stay your choice for the public comment period but first I just want to make sure the school committees have the um any opportunity they want to speak please Gene wall I want to say that is the person doing the union negotiations with Christine and Karen I saw firsthand the two of them working together and they are a team they their discussions are phenomenal and I also watched other people being brought in who were interested in some of the work that was being done so they could get trained to do it so what Christine says is is perfect uh in how she has managed as the superintendent to train as many people as possible to go forward and I'm sorry it's without her but there are so many things going on that that Karen has been a part of including the redistricting the the Grievances that she's listened to with I mean it I have been intimately involved accidentally by doing the union negotiations and the Grievances in the redistricting and the strategic planning and it's all done collaboratively and I can't praise Karen enough for the job she can do here for the schools and what she knows already thanks thank you Gene appreciate your perspective any anything else from the school committee members yes please me yes go ahead I you know I have known um assistant superintendent Cameron Patna for at least 10 years she um was our oldest English teacher and um he enjoyed being in our class he he wasn't he's you know he's a math kid so he wasn't really doesn't really embrace the language if you will um and but still enjoyed being in her class and um I know that prior to coven you know I've got a kid I our daughter isn't an easy kid and so I spent some time at the high school with Karen trying to figure some things out and then um doing teacher negotiations contract negotiations and things like that during covid Karen was on on the negotiating team and was great and in many cases was the calmer head than mine big surprise um and it's even more telling than all of those things to me is this past year I mean in in all the work that she's done is has been remarkable since being superintendent but more telling or assistant superintendent excuse me um more telling for me is when I went to graduation this past spring we'll call it spring um is that students who were graduating even though she hasn't been there for a couple of years we're still giving her hugs as they went through and she was the the smiles on everyone's face hers and theirs to see each other um really was wonderful to see and I've seen I've seen her be an authority figure at the high school as well and that's okay and and but everyone was still happy to see her and and for me that's more telling than anything else truthfully thank you how about I see uh mayor wiederkartner you've got your hand up oh you didn't mean to have your hand up that's fine um member Johnson moves out go ahead I'll just say um when we first got the sad news that um Christine was moving on I I kind of assumed we would be headed towards the search because I just I don't know I guess they always thought with the job of the significance and and everything that a truck a search would be just kind of um the ordinary course of business but hearing um masks presentation today and reading all the emails and everything and um supportive of working with Karen and she'll have us thank you Glenn thank you and mayor Rita gardening your hands still up so do you want to speak now you have a look on your face like you do you're on Butte though you're you're still on mute yeah my lips were moving yeah you're good now we can hear you go ahead oh okay um I only in the last three years have have really gotten to know Karen because I I don't have kids in the school anymore but uh what I do know is that I've been uh impressed with the numbers of internal staff as well as people from parents and so forth who have been very supportive of Karen is our superintendent and everything I have seen and know about her says that she is ready for the job and um there has been a lot of upheaval as we all know you and I especially Amy and Susan in the last three years so to bring continuity and comfort to the school system of Greenfield and the community who Embraces it I think is an extraordinary thing for us to be able to do and um and I see that in being able to have Karen is there it's our next Super engine thank you mayor you know the only thing I would add at this point is a little bit about process I think um there were some good questions about that um and certainly uh the part about having a public interview um on the way to an appointment seems very uh respectable logical sensical sensible all those things um and the way I see it is I know this committee as chair that we don't move uh quickly or without thoughtfulness um when it comes to making motions and moving forward with big things and that's to be appreciated because we have so many folks who come from different perspectives with um very thoughtful uh input to our processes that we undertake um but what I would what I think we we should consider is um that we certainly don't want to lose uh what we the solution that we may have right in front of us and so I would like to have folks plan for our regular meeting next week uh our regular monthly meeting to have a motion uh to appoint at the end of uh Christine's term pending a successful uh public interview and successful negotiation of a contract that would be the motion that I would introduce we are not doing it now we don't even have to discuss it now but I wanted folks to have a sense of where I'm at with that and I welcome folks to take a different uh tact with that when we when it comes forward but what I don't want to do is have a wonderful unique opportunity uh slip through our hands without with inaction um and you know the other thing that I would say because we do have public um interest a great deal of public interest on this is superintendent DeBarge alluded to the fact that we have had um uh emails and uh I've also had one-on-one discussions with a number of folks in the community about uh what to do next and without exaggeration well we've all seen the emails but for the public it's been entirely unanimous uh that we should be appointing Karen as our next superintendent um and from the the folks that I've spoken to um it's also been unanimous and um I I hope that folks would bring anything forward uh to the school committee within the next week or at our public comment uh next Wednesday if there are concerns or anything we should uh additionally consider that they want to bring forward the community you know Glenn and Liz both trust the community's input on this um much more eloquently than I could so um I want to make sure we have that clear that that's you know kind of where I would see this process heading and why um and with that said I'd actually like to um let Glenn and Liz know that they are free to go and enjoy their evening and we will move into the public comment portion and I can't thank you both enough for your guidance before and during this meeting today thank you very much for your time and your expertise thank you Amy I've got to go buy my Powerball tickets go that's right go go good luck take care thank you um and then I'm looking uh at our attendance here and um public comment is for folks who are actually logged into the meeting and the only one I see logged in is Stephanie who indicated when we started the recording when we started the meeting that she doesn't plan to participate in public comment and Stephanie of course not to put you on the spot but you have the opportunity to change your mind and do public comment at this time if you're interested still listening thanks thank you and I don't see that anyone else in it and you can disagree with me please if I'm missing but I don't see that anyone else is logged in that could be doing public comment does everyone agree with that okay so I would again stress uh to the general public who's listening in or listening to the recording that at our regular meeting next Wednesday the 11th at 6 PM after John's on we will of course take public comment and welcome your comment on this and anything else related to the schools and at this time I would also take a motion to adjourn that was enough I missed who Moved who moved it second extra move Johnson was sad second there we go okay and we do need a roll call boat remember yes secretary extra yes remember Johnson aside yeah Vice chair Martini yes chair Peretti yes number wall yes yes we are adjourned thank you so much 6 52 p.m great thank you good night good night [Music]
