Larsen mrs. Thurman did tell the parents if the students have lots of homework to do and they don't feel like staying for the entire meeting they're welcome to leave at this time I did tell them that beforehand yes if anyone would like to go this is a perfect time I'll wait to start your choice thanks everyone and the room empty nobody really needs to hear Dina thank you okay next we have public comment and we have one individual signed up antoinette Dalby daily I'm sorry um you can come up here please and you just need to state your name and address for records good evening to the board Chairman's turned the board of directors superintendent for Ally or Braille Morril and principal bilenda my name is Antoinette Daly as stated I live at 30 Laurel Hill Road here in Brookville unit 207 and my reason for being here and speaking today concerns allergies and having the school district be a nut-free environment and here's why since the beginning of the school year my daughter who has severe peanut allergy has been exposed not one two or three but six times while in school of these six times two of these instances occurred within one week and two were critical requiring her be taken away from school via ambulance one of which was critical what does this lead me to conclude it leads me to conclude that the policy we have in place is not working and we need to do children with allergies need to be taken seriously by all and staff as a delay in responding to them could be fatal and I would hate to be the parent that receives a phone call that their child is still along with it now I'm being asked to send my daughter back into this environment and I can't do that at this time because I she doesn't feel safe and nor does I and she's telling me that she's depressed and there are other things that I won't get into this time so since this environment is not safe for her and it could cost her life I'm asking that we really look into having a a nut-free environment and have policies in place with consequences and policies that must be adhered to so that I don't have to keep getting these phone calls that my child or any child oh sorry Thank You Internet that's all that has signed up was there anyone else here that cares to speak okay yes state name and address please my name is Henry Petrus nineteen rocky road Brookfield I'm told that this is appropriate venue to talk about the new school from the viewpoint of the planet so I come here as an advocate for our community and our planet I spoke with an architect that the Prix referendum meeting in early March an answer to my question about heating solutions for the new school the answer was natural gas indeed the new school FAQ on the website talks about natural gas as the heating solution there's a question about bringing in a pipeline to the school and there is even a concern expressed about a gas explosion I am deeply concerned should such a solution move forward I ask that our community be concerned as well as a human my guiding principle is simple to care for our planet and or life on it also any energy solution implemented will affect our community for 150 plus years if we're not thinking about this new school to let to last us for 150 plus years and we're not thinking long-term okay we're just thinking short-term also I believe in investing and our young people so in no way I'm objecting to building on your school okay I believe that education is the foundation upon which every profession is built now as far as the goals for the huckleberry school to keep the project a long-term ongoing energy operating costs lowest pre green and future proof in other words to be in a position to retrofit sustainable solutions when funding becomes available to use clean and to use clean energy and sustainable solutions as well these are in alignment with the Governor's Council on climate change started by Governor Malloy I happen to be on these go I happen to be going to these meetings and the goal for the gc3 is to reduce statewide greenhouse emissions by 80% by 2050 over one levels okay so we've got a few years to go but we got it actually according to the United Nations we're running out of time so I beg you not natural gas I beg you I plead okay now this is not a long-term solution and make greenhouse emissions worse leak gas is 80 plus times worse than carbon dioxide currently about 65 percent of the state's energy comes from natural gas in quotes Connecticut needs to be about 15 percent by 2050 or sooner for the Connecticut energy a comprehensive energy strategy and yet Connecticut continues to implement a solution that will go away soon and it conflicts with it goals of the Governor's Council on climate change Brookfield by the way signed an intent to be a sustainable Connecticut town last year the utility still gets its money by charging forever cleaner energy instead of natural gas so they're taking care of as well now so how are these targets going to be met if natural gas is a solution for Huckleberry excuse me we have a three-minute time limit and you've reached that could you up wrap it up in the next few seconds please okay the solution is in my view and we have experts by the way who will testify to this is is a ground source heat pump heat pumps okay and we need to seriously investigate it we have experts who can come and testify we have architects who can testify as well okay and the reality is we're running out of time United Nations tells us so we've got 11 years to go now I'll just do one more thing okay as a teacher you guys would appreciate this okay paper is one fumble okay and now I challenge you to make this this again alright the answer is don't do it in the first place thank you thank you was there anyone else here to speak okay we can move on to the student representative report ready hi everyone here's a quick update on what's going on students at four fail at school today was college is the decision day for Brooke thank you mrs. Stern I'm deferring my time this is a lot of subcommittee reports tonight so I wanted to defer my time but just let the board know that I'm working on kind of an end-of-the-year dates for celebrations and recognitions and awards ceremony so you all know you're invited to all of them and so we'll get our communication out on that sometime next week thank you thank you subcommittee reports first we have facilities all right we have a lot of things going on that is very exciting and before I start going through it I would like to point out to everyone here in the room and in the public that all of these items that I'm going to be speaking about have already been funded under capital projects so this is costing zero dollars to the taxpayers right now we are in the build bidding process for the renovation and design work for a new boys bathroom at Brookfield High School again this has already been budgeted for we have the money we are things we're looking at is perhaps an exterior access to the bathrooms for events use so people do not have to track up the he'll use the porta potties storage area for equipment for our athletes and an expanded weight room our weight room is extremely small I can't see more than ten people being able to work out in it but we'd like to expand that for our athletes also part of that would be a new locker area the locker room is put it bluntly disgusting it needs updating we need new fans new lighting new plumbing again this is just a design study that we're in the bidding process for and this has already been paid for whiskey near we are working on masonry and glass projects that need to be updated and or repaired we're in the process of looking at what has to be done we're going to be repairing those again already paid for cost you zero more dollars Brookville High School the new HVAC unit is on top of the roof very exciting the exterior ductwork is being done so we should be wrapping that up shortly so that again zero dollars already paid for people the generator new high school generator has been ordered we have a ship date for July all other work in preparation for the generator to come is being done now again zero dollars this is how we work together as a community and as a board to get these things done with the valuable dollars that you give us uh that's about it any duddy joy do you have any additions did I forget anything over April break the kitchen install the new that was done a maple bike um so I I just ask that when you go and vote remember all of these things are so important to maintain a healthy learning atmosphere an environment for everyone in our community and we have been working really hard this year and we've done tremendous things and we would like to do more to enhance our schools thank you any questions for Eve or the facilities team thank you very much alright next we have finance this development is not here today so I'll just kind of review things very quickly we just went through the financial report check register as I we had mentioned prior to we were trying to do a soft spending freeze to account for the variances upcoming for the end of the fiscal year and that seems to be going right on right on target we're looking to discuss the budget and capital funds with that started looking at maybe turf field replacement and how we can approach that maybe looking with our non lapsing funds and perhaps taking the non Lansing fund and putting it into an accrual for the turf replacement which we know is going to be happening not this year we're talking about upcoming years we know that we're going to be needing to replace that back turf within the next few years and so we want to lessen the impact as much as we can for that we also discuss the Student Activity Fund as we had talked about before we keep reviewing and go digging in and diving deeper into student activity fund if is looking fabulous compared to what it was and perhaps maybe in the next month or two we can even have a report on the Student Activity fund and how that's going along and and how it's just been streamlined in the court as to how it that's about it oh and we also discuss the audit report which we have since then discussed here in a board meeting we had a clean audit and I'm grateful to mr.

post and the entire administration and finance department for making that happen any questions the turf field replacement um we do it technically it is not part of the screws which is which is probably why it hasn't gone through facilities it's not part of the school's capital plan it's sort of part services but looking at it collaboratively as a town it needs to be done so we're trying to figure out how we can as an entire town make that so that's why it hasn't gone through facilities the I'm not sure of the actual amount we can get that for you my understand is in the 250 to 500 thousand dollar range and I know that's a large range but it's that that's the window if people are interested in the cost and that's not to build a new turf field that's the replacement the existing carpet the infrastructure is already in place it costs less which turf field is it is it the football field not baseball both really you're getting close to the back field really does need to be replaced in the front field is at that ages while they were installed around the same time so backfield is more urgent [Music] all right questions alright moving on to personnel in negotiations we had met on April 8th immediately when the executive sketch this executive session to discuss unaffiliated salaries and collective bargaining strategy negotiations and so we will sometime in the next month or so an executive session and continue our discussion as a full board and with reference to the unaffiliated salaries okay next we have Cape Jen okay so we have some presentations later with we'll give detail on each of things we discuss I'll just quickly outline it first we discuss the new health ninth and eleventh grade curriculum so with an addition of one year of health to the state requirements the health department has revamped the curriculum and we're going to learn about that later when the cake committee voted unanimously to recommend to the board to approve adoption of that health curriculum and then secondly we heard about the human geography curriculum and there was a request made for a new text purchase and the Cape committee voted unanimously to recommend that approval of the adoption of the textbook contemporary human geography as well and then lastly we were given a presentation about a Spanish textbook recommendation and we heard all about the changes in the programming and the updates that were needed for that curriculum and the Cape committee voted unanimously to recommend to the board to approve the adoption of a three-year to Spanish textbook purchase plan so it would be not all at once but it would sort of spread out the purchases when they were actually really really needed and spread out our financial sort of commitment to that plan and that was it [Music] any questions for general cape committee Thank You Jen welcome and next we have policy communications okay so we met last week and we continued we now that you know at least the bulk of the budget discussions for the full board have been have passed we kind of delved right back into our discussion of the 3000 series and we have we unanimously voted to push six of those policies through to the board for a first reading actually two of them are just a really R policies that we already have and they just need on they didn't need any you know major changes so they'll be coming to you with very minor edits just as a reproval and the rest of them honestly are practices that we're already have in place they're things were already doing so that we just need to have a policy in place for them in terms of communication we dr.

Blandon gets the PowerPoint ready there was so many years of work that went into preparing for the Nia's visit and we talked about it at different meetings but I really want to thank mr. Boland uh his administrative and teacher leadership team the visiting committee they just did a tremendous job a lot of work and as you'll find from mr. Belinda not a whole heck of a lot of surprises a lot of good news and things that were working toward were talked about by the committee so we're excited to see the presentation mr. president all right thank you so gonna walk through a little bit of the report I'm not gonna walk through all 100 pages of the final report that the Board received in their packet last week I wouldn't do that to you so I'm just highlight a few things about the process and talking about what recent letter I've received and what our plans are moving forward so you'll see we knew the process so far last visit was in 2007 and because of various reasons NASA pushed it back two years usually it's every 10 years normally be 2017 we asked initially for an extension because of change in leadership and then they actually were looking for us to push it back even more not for the thing we did but because they needed more evaluators to come up to buildings it didn't have enough because everybody was coming to you at the same time once they pushed us back so so we didn't get it to fall this ball in December 2018 we spent the entire 2018-19 school year working on the self-study where the certified staff were working together affected a bunch of information put together our final drafts and submitted it an early fall and it's not 2019 that should be fall 2018 and it has noticed that and there's some I'm Way ahead of myself here in the decennial visiting committee didn't was not here December 2019 because it hasn't happened yet they were here 2018 and then as you can see we finally we submitted the report and then they gave me feedback so what happened is the woman who came and was the chair the boy you remember might remember her name Linda bandwagon she came after the meetings decided to she compiles all the work done by the committee over those four days and puts a final draft of report send it to me to review for inaccuracies and things like there's names or titles or things like that wrong she's finalizes that that then it goes through another iteration of some somebody added the commission and then eventually gets submitted to them for their annual meeting which was the beginning of April right so the beginning of April the actual me asking Commission which is a series of people from all over New England actually read the final report and then that Commission is the one that loaded to determine accreditation what our next steps are so I got that letter and hey we're better did so it's been quite quite the journey as we as I think about even when I was hired that was part of my first performance task was to put together how I would walk the school through their accreditation visit so it feels like it's come full circle at this point so I did get a letter from me ask just dated April 24th I just got it the other day and it highlights specific recommendations and I'll talk about those in a minute if you took it if you went through the final report that I've shared with you there's different pieces it includes the standards school community summary our core values and beliefs and learning expectations description of the process conclusions and sources of evidence accommodations recommendations follow-up responsibilities on my end things like making sure that I fill out the forms gonna need to fill out making sure that I release the report to the public which is one of the next steps after the board meeting tonight I'll be sending it out to the News Times I'll be sending it out to the public library also sending the parents students everybody'll get a copy of that and we post on the website and then a thing about substitutes change if there's any major changes like huge reductions and staff things like that I have to report that to me ask and then just to list the fizzing team members so that's kind of the outline of the report and I said rather than going through the whole thing one of the great pieces is we have more common and recommendations right I had a couple conversations with my staff and some of the leadership and really we were sure what we're him they were fantastic about what they they gave us back still have things to grow and things we need to change these are some of the highlight accommodations that they did right and in this letter that I received in the 24th some of the things that the two things that are highlighted I tried to highlight two of the recommendations for our commendations first slide one thing that the hell is was great was the intensive of training and curriculum we know that work has been ongoing for several years with the visiting committee recognized that and gave us some kudos for that and then in the classroom instructional strategies to promote student choice self-assessment and reflection so these are just the first part there's also a part two because they the list continues again I highlighted two of these first in his range of formative and summative assessment strategies so when they went to the classrooms and they saw a lot of different ways that our teachers were assessing students when there was formatively and fast where they may have seen summative assessments where they may have been part of the evidence collection process that they were able to look through these these um electronic documents where we uploaded this as a sample of what we do or maybe it was a conversation with the teacher show me some things you're using and the teachers showed that so they were able to highlight that which is fantastic and I think one thing that's great for me was the safe positive respectful and supportive school culture that fosters students responsibility for learning and results in shared ownership pride and high expectations for all this was a pretty that was when I was pretty proud of you know that it really shows what we're doing here Brookfield high school again it talks about students and parents that their participation and some instructional leadership as well part three because the commendations continue right so this is awesome I highlighted it too that I highlighted in this particular slide was systematic and consistent communications of students especially those most in need about valuable support services and the ongoing efforts of all staff to actively engage parents and families and partners in education so those are two the other ones that I thought again they're all great because they're all calm but those are things that I saw really as some highlights well with highlights obviously commendations also come some recommendations things need to change and I broke those up into two parts I'll show you it's a bulleted list that they gave but I as I look through it there was some common themes the first one was to say design develop and implement right so you see in quotes it says develop and implement because all these bullet points were about what we need to do next and then the other one is the word ensure and I'll show you that the next slide I highlighted these things in yellow in the first four because they all talked about core values and beliefs and learning expectations so what we did really well as a school was we identified what we want our kids to be able to know and be able to do outside of just learning about academics we have some things about communication research critical thinking specific and social expectations did a great job identifying those and now we need to make sure we have a process to regular review and revise is that's what happens off but you set these and then ten years later you can revise them again so we want to make sure we have a really solid plan in place and then you'll see as we go through so see Civic and social expectations highlighted in the next two bullets because while we know that we want students to exhibit respectful behavior right and be active involved actively involved in the community you need to figure out how we're gonna measure that we can have ideas we have some plans that are general skeleton of what we're gonna do and now it's time to formally develop that and implement it and then actually assess it and report out on it all right we have to make sure that we show that to individuals and as a school and then a formal ongoing program a process which each student has an adult in school who knows the student well and assists in achieving learning expectations that's something I have been working on a version of that is kind of flex a but it's not very effective as to what I need it to be dr.

Borel knows that I've been working on looking at some possibilities for rearranging our schedule a little bit and finding some real common time across the building for this to happen on a regular basis so instead of just having a process actually have almost like a program really in place to make sure this happens and then they took anything and everything that was concerned with facilities and into one sentence I don't know how they did that but it says a long-range plan that identified that addresses programs and services and Roma changes and staffing needs facility needs technology and capital improvements that's a mouthful it's a lot in there that really I think in a lot of ways minimizes some of the work that we need to do when you expand that out and just look at the just like the last one and capital improvements just that statement takes a ton as ten knows and Dan knows and Facilities Committee knows so that's a pretty big develop and implement and they're pretty pretty focused on the implement it's great to have a plan the next step is to implement it you can have the best plan in the world but if you don't do anything with it it just becomes the plan you keep pushing back further and further so that's one of the things they're looking for and then ensure again this is the yellow highlighted parts this will see core values and beliefs about learning right so we want to make sure that our grading reporting practices are aligned there they want us to complete the curriculum development and then I highlighted increased opportunities for students to apply knowledge and skills to essential tasks so that's something we know we need to get a little bit better app and then involving other people in the budget more than just in the administration so those are the big highlighted recommendations you'll see that there's some through lines you certainly can go through the report if you have any other specific questions I can surely answer those but I'm gonna tell you what my next steps are I'm an obstacle share of community stakeholders I have to implement some recommendations and then I have a two year project report that I have to give to me ask and there's two parts to that one is the highlighted recommendations so every one of those bullet points I put up there for recommendations for ensure and then develop and implement I have to give specific feedback on each one of those and then I give generalized report a lot of the other recommendations things like and I just can't say we're working on it and there's specific statements of curbs in progress not applicable so I'll to do that in the next two years due October 1st 2020 City clear the timeline for one I have to get that stuff done and then they're changing the process on us so we'll have new set of standards that are on lines and there's definitely a connection between what we did in to the 2011 standards to the new 2020 20 they're calling it a vision for learning we'll talk about instead of core values and beliefs and learning expectations we'll talk about the vision of a graduate this is what the next step will be so that we're gonna shift from that to something a little more clear I think than core values beliefs and learning expectations so that's the next steps for us but I really I really do have to thank people and I want to make sure this is the board meeting we can put this out there publicly the steering committee co-chairs mic submitting Kathy Malatesta when I came in in the fall of 2015 they were already established as the committee steering committee co-chairs and I've been doing it for a year prior so this is the fourth year in a row or X to the fifth year in a row they've been working on this so Kathy Malatesta is one of our school librarians and Mike Smith who is our Teacher of the Year previous year and it's just a fantastic guy they did a wonderful job and then we had a steering committee of Amanda Kappa Rosa Jerry Cassaday Jason's Astacio and Andrew Hill who actually came back on as soon as he came back on he said I'm ready to work what can I do so he showed back up and said let me help and then individual standards chairs so of those seven standards I had teachers who volunteered to lead those groups and help write those reports and collect evidence and write the narratives of those Felicia Leibler Jewish Aaron who's no longer with us she's she's retired as Lisa Bonavita but there were two leaders scott Zuka Jackie Rossum Sharon Davison Kelly Nichols Steve Baldwin and Courtney Schwartz who was moved on to another career but they also held work interval and helping us with this process so it's been a long road and we still have work ahead to do that's the nice part about this it's not over but we see some pretty clear steps that we need to take here as a school to continue moving forward to align with any asked recommendations so that's what I have and I'm certainly happy to answer any questions anybody has about the report itself I know it I've read it once or twice right now all hundred pages and then anything else I can answer and happen I'd be happy to do that could you send me your PowerPoint absolutely we'll have that yeah I can do that yep thank you represents a lot of tremendous hard work for the entire VHS staff most appreciative work tirelessly they were great is one question so what would you say is your top priority that you're thinking about for the high school based on this feedback it's a significant or two I think I think I'd pick a couple I think number one really looking and trying to meld between what we need to do with creating a vision of a graduate and our core values and beliefs in trying to meld how we best measure that and get report that stuff out we're definitely good at understanding how we can measure communication and research and critical thinking we've got some established rubrics and teachers are using those it's those other things that we just can't let slide because they're critically important specifically social expectations for kids are huge you need to be able to report out on those and assess those so that's one of the priorities I think the other piece for me is in the instructional world is really s RBI and focusing on intervention for kids and not just for students that are struggling but also enrichment for those kids that need that extra that extra push right to make sure that that's there and that comes up in some of the recommendations not necessarily on the highlighted ones but it's one of the ones from me that I saw that I think we need to work on and then of course facilities is always going to be something that I'm going to push for you know to make sure that we keep you know this this building in great working order and then it can also take steps not just a function but then to be be cutting-edge as much as we possibly can so those are really the three things I'd take away oh those are my three things you've rubbed off on me thank you thank you very much thank you Mark moving on we have the approval of the ID a grant application recommend a motion that the board approved the annual submission of the district IDE a grant as required by state law did it or have any questions or like doctors holida just summarize what the idea a grant is this is the one that we approve annually um rule do you want a quick just one or two sentence just for the public I don't doctor's phone so we apply for the I da grant every year we generally receive between five hundred five hundred and fifty thousand dollars depending on our number of students and it really is to support excess costs for students with disabilities [Music] any other discussion questions all in favor aye aye opposed thank you dr.

Scott moving on we have the approval of the health curriculum recommend a motion that the board approved the health line and health 11 curriculum as recommended by a mr. Steve Baldwin director of athletics health and PE k12 the Cape subcommittee and assistant superintendent dr. maureen ruby hi i'm back and only one more time after this - so you read a place representing to keep last week we are unbelievably excited at the opportunity to expand our health curriculum from what was it's essentially 21 lessons for freshman and 21 lessons for juniors now doubled the health curriculum time which has been an amazing opportunity to really expand upon current topics add a little bit more into the curriculum this happens by the ninth grade an 11th grade curriculum map Steve Alden and his team have done a really great job going through not only the state checklist which is kind of a bare minimum this is what you have to cover but then going through the national standards as well and making sure that we hit each one of these bullet points of things that we need to include you know one of the great things about the new curriculum that they're proposing is there's a lot of opportunity to expand on topics that the previous teacher and we used to be it was mr.

Alessio and he continues to be a health teacher for us but he would the way the pacing of his classes would be it was it becomes almost a drive-by experience for this is what we have and then we got to check that box and it became a curriculum of compliance more so than any getting into any depth so he's been able to expand lessons to multiple multiple days and really get more in depth have more performance-based and actually include some of the core values and beliefs and learning expectations about research communication and critical thinking and actually now be worked more into the actual curriculum which has been fantastic I believe you saw there's some curriculum maps that talk about the different pieces that we're going to do you know I think they did a fantastic job presenting we're really really looking forward to and then also you know the next step that's not included in any of this is the high schools involvement in ruler which is one of those next social-emotional pieces we're really excited about working on that this summer and we're gonna figure out how we can get that into the curriculum as well and work through that so we just we appreciate the the foresight that the the board of the subcommittee of the board has had and the board as well to let us expand to this point it is a one credit requirement for graduation so we are now complying with what the state expectation is what we're really proud of the work that they've done and we're looking forward to the opportunity to work with the ninth and eleventh graders and expand what we're doing looking at the curriculum map and the health curriculum doubling the health interaction time is so invaluable right it's amazing what more you can do during that time and even maturity-wise when we start looking at what 9th graders can handle versus 11th graders you can get into deeper topics you'll see some of the things in the 11th grade map you know they're they're talking more specifically about opioid addictions things like that they get into some of those things you know but the chris herren they're talking about that synthetic marijuana vaping is something that's a through-line through in both 9th and 11th grade curriculums now to make sure that we spend time talking about that and the dangers of what that is so it's a it's a great opportunity really great opportunity any other discussion questions all in favor aye toast thank you for the entire health department and for the subcommittee for doing work on that and next we have the approval of the human geography textbook and curriculum writing recommend a motion that the board approved the human geography textbooks and the human geography curriculum writing as recommended by Miss Liz Samantha Spencer humanities curriculum specialists BHS the Cape subcommittee and assistant superintendent dr.

Maureen movie a mark Belinda um dr. Spencer's and feeling well tonight she would be here but she's not feeling well you know one of the things that we've looked at doing last year the the board and the subcommittee of Cape were helped us to kind of support our vision of realignment of what we do with our soul studies curriculum so this year we actually implanted a global themes course for ninth graders the conversation working with Stephen Armstrong who is the state consultant for social studies and working with our department they decided to make a transition to Human Geography as the next step for sophomores so the sequence now is these students that are freshmen take global themes Human Geography sophomore year then US history and then a choice of American government a few other things for their senior year the great thing about human geography is that it's it allows us to hit some of the standards that we didn't have a chance to really get into when you have a two-year sequence of essentially what was world history we're missing out on some things and so really what we have before you today as far as a vote is really for a textbook or resource the gentleman and I'm gonna pronounce his name wrong is James Rubinstein Steen I think it's Rubenstein who is known as the eminent ap human of the Human Geography guru per se so he's written several textbooks this is the one that we currently use for our AP course right now it's written by him you'll noticed a couple things though as you'll see live in a little bit when Kevin comes up and talks about world language is that textbooks are getting thinner right so this this is actually the textbook we're looking and I'll pass it around so you can see it about contemporary human geography us all passes around there's an actual and I solder and one of the reasons it's getting textbooks are getting thinner is because there's a lot of different resources now so we start using online resources and the textbook really becomes a resource as opposed to a curriculum which used to happen in a lot of places I know in my high school for many years the curriculum was the book you turn to page 27 and you start learning out of the book answer the odd and even questions this has changed that so this book is really going to become a resource for students it's going to be both taught at the academic and honours as well as AP level so we're opening up so they'll actually be three levels so sophomores have the actual opportunity to take AP Human Geography they're in the process of working on the curriculum they should have a majority of it done before the end of the school year to come back and show you this is where we are now this is the textbook we're looking we figured we start there because it aligns mostly with what the topics are that we know that we're going to cover in Human Geography they've kind of mapped that out and it's really a resource that we're looking to do it to use that also includes an online component as well with some GIS tools some geo mapping things like that that kids would really need to be exposed to that we have not had the opportunity to do before so at this point we're looking for supports make this the textbook that we'll use as a resource we also go into class sets no longer we're not planning on buying you know a hundred and our two hundred seventy-five copies for a whole class we're going to class sets because it really truly is a resource to be used that way so that's what I have for you question sure um the AP Human Geography will that be in lieu of the ninth grader honors or is that in addition so ap Human Geography will be it's it's gonna be essentially it can be a sophomore course students can take it as sophomores they can also choose to take it again if they want to take it as a senior as where we're looking at right now because that's currently what we have the model that we have for AP Human Geography it'll be offered in those three levels to just those sophomores so right now we didn't have any students we have very few students sign up or look to take AP World History so that's one we're kind of phasing out for next year and phasing in that was a ticket technically a sophomore class that students took an AP and now it's gonna be AP Human Geography you'll have more sophomores in the class let's just still have students taking academic and honors level Hey Human Geography and this will be the resource for all three of them know the resource will be four so this is the old AP book right this is the one that we've been using and have used for AP and it says AP Edition on it he has an updated edition which doesn't require a vote because it's an updated edition but you can see this is an updated edition of the book it will be a different book for AP any of the questions all right all in favor aye opposed thank you again for all of your hard work on that Thank You Marc nice job tonight next we have approval of Spanish textbooks recommend a motion that the board approves Spanish textbooks as recommended by Miss chemin Holly WL an ESL curriculum specialist k12 the Cape subcommittee and assistant superintendent dr.

Maureen movie good evening everyone I'm here on behalf of our amazing world language department and specifically to talk about Spanish programming because that is our most immediate need currently I developed an action plan for our new curricular ask which is the Senderos curricular resource currently we have that value that is textbooks in all of our most of our Spanish courses and due to the fact that our world language teachers have been receiving excellent professional development through our work with dr. Alcock you know we've found that the Rallye those textbooks have been rendered obsolete in our standards aligned work if teachers are now viewing as Mr Belinda said textbooks as resources not as curriculum we are teaching our students skills it's not purely content so the following courses well how I outlined here Spanish five Spanish pre-ap and Spanish for a don't have textbooks at all but we do have very resourceful teachers so one of my first ask that I've included here send the nose five book I would hold up the textbook that it's replacing but we don't have one instead we have a very resourceful teacher arnesto Davila who literally traveled to Spain to bring back authentic resources recordings and images that added to our authentic resource library so this is what we would be asking for this actually the teachers edition which as you could see a very thin curricular resource not curriculum also has an online component the online component is excellent I actually in my previous life in another district I used the Vista higher learning program where I was able to use the online resource to tailor specific learning plans for my students for outside work outside of the classroom so for example if a student needed help with present tense verbs I would have very I would use the online resource to assign that specific 10 to 15 minutes of work for that student so it was very targeted very specific individualized work for that student through this program the next one that I would be purchasing in conjunction the synthetics 4 and also this this textbook resource aligns perfectly to our Tomas textbook in our AP Spanish course so this is something that the Spanish teachers have unanimously decided that this would be a great resource for them and this would be replacing this current textbook this is a student edition and I'll pass it around so you could see the difference between a curricular resource at standards aligned and a resource that was meant to be curriculum that is not rendered obsolete and you can see through the images just through the cover just the complete difference in what this type of resource how can it could have enriched our program and in terms of enriching our program what I've outlined here in our action plan is like I said the AP Spanish language and Spanish language course utilizes it them us from the VHL de vista higher learning vendor and the synthetic or siz vertically articulated to temas but currently lacking from our program spanish teachers have received a demonstration of this in little series already and like I said unanimously agreed on its implementation so I'm here speaking on their behalf but it was not purchased through the the previous implementation of the rally last program which is expiring in December 2019 so to avoid a curricular resource expiring in the middle of the year I have developed this action plan where the curricular resource would be purchased during the summer months so that way the online would be renewed as necessary and we wouldn't be faced with that curricular hurdle in the middle of the year in the process of developing a pathway we are currently of an AP Spanish and literature culture course so this enrichment of the curricular resource that could lead to a clear pathway to the Spanish literature and culture course so the ultimate goal is to provide Spanish teachers with an actual line those are standards the American Council of teaching foreign languages curricular resource that will aid in facilitating authentic learning experiences that advance our students communication and intercultural proficiencies in the Spanish language both inside and outside of the classroom question for those which I think it's two of us would be purchased in the 1920 school year is it is it built into the budget already yes just okay any further questions for Kevin all right all in favor aye aye opposed thank you I just I just want to make a comment that and I think the cape committee members who are present can echo this that the folks who put the work together for requests for curricular materials really did their homework it wasn't coming you know forward and saying oh this is a really great book you know we really like to this I mean all the evidence was put forth for the curriculum committee to know what it was we had what's we're trying to do and why the materials that are being requested are the right ones for the students in terms of what our program is and you know I just want to acknowledge the amount of work that the teachers did under mr.

bland this guidance to get us to where we are tonight to be able to make these requests and it was great that because we had been introduced to the new curriculum too earlier in the year so we were already versed in the vision and changes for the courses so then to see the resources that would support it really made sense so thank you for hearing us thank you for your work on them okay moving to Oh business we have a policy thirty five forty two point four three recommend a motion that the board approved policy number three five four two four three lunch charging for our final reading as recommended by the policy subcommittee first reading was on March 6 2009 teen I didn't get any feedback from anybody just putting down words or practice okay no discussion post thank you to the policy committee for that work right um new school building project we're chugging along on the state grant application which is due June 30th dr.

Brill do you want to give an update as far as your submissions to that we're in great shape there are four key items we're still working on the majority of those are waiting on kind of the the architect and some of the subcontractors that are doing site surveys and things like that and how we upload those and some frankly some mechanics and gathering data but for the obviously probably 80% complete at this point so we're really ahead of the game frankly the other thing I mentioned a Facilities Committee tonight is that we also as part of the security grant we need to talk about security measures in the new facility undergirding that is what do we do currently with our facilities so we met with the chief of police our SROs our youth officers are administrative representatives from the building's today and a representative from homeland security going to visit today 2/3 of the buildings they have to get to one more building with our facility director and the administration like I said and in the officers that are assigned to the building's to audit the buildings and they spent it soviets have a good seven or eight hours to do three of the buildings today so a real thorough review and so they'll have a report similar to how mr.

Blandon talked about commendations and recommendations that kind of a thing they'll give us a summary in addition to that Geoff Wisniewski from Tecton associates who's helping us with the grant will be meeting with myself Dan Caldwell chief Purcell Ken and the gentleman from homeland security on Friday next week to not only tour the the fourth school but to talk about the new school design and and some of the state VR things we'll do what's a for safety and security there that'll all be written up and so we're really excited about that as kind of nearing the final stretch of the grant process we want to get the grant in as fast as possible I talked with mr. Czech was looking at scheduling a special meeting sometime next week because the RFQ for our contextual qualifications is due tomorrow and so they'll the the NBC will meet and then they'll look at RFP in interviews and set that up and then obviously after that select an architect to be the designer of the project and so all of that will be part of the grants as well so the next three weeks is really everything is going to fall into place we want to get the grant then as early as possible so if there's feedback from the state long before June 30th we could make any adjustments or provide any additional that's my heaven thank you any questions for dr.
