picture fit your time sorry [Applause] Lynne Calloway [Music] Arianna Marie Colella [Music] Haley and Creepo Jade Nicole Kinsey [Music] Caitlin Nicole Wilcox [Music] and now back to our regularly scheduled program I now give you a senior class president and your student body president Ethan Meyer and branding Flewelling hello everybody and once again welcome to the rampart class of 2019 graduation my name is Brendon Flewelling and I am the student body president and that would make me Ethan Meyer senior class president class of first and foremost congratulations you made it and tonight is a celebration of you as well as the people who have helped you get here family friends faculty and loved ones thank you for joining us tonight to celebrate the class of 2019 seniors at the beginning of the year we asked you to do three things first we asked you to give your all in everything you did and you definitely did that on the field your athletic teams won a state championship and girls swim and dive as well as multiple lead championships in football volleyball girls soccer girls track and field and more past athletics your commitment to excellence and all facets of life has led to incredible accomplishments you were accepted into trade and vocational schools you received appointments to military academies and offers of admissions to multiple Ivy League schools and other prestigious universities and as a class you earned a total of over 1 million dollars in scholarships second we ask you to be bold and try something new from new sports in clubs to new classes many of you tried something new took risk and ended up finding new passions and new families and finally we asked each of you to be there for one another we believe it is within this pursue that rampart distinguishes itself from other high schools simply put rampart including the students parents faculty and more is a community your support for one another has led to setting a new national record for the amount a raise in a year for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society as well as raising a total of over three hundred thousand dollars for cancer research apart from our accomplishments we've learned a lot along the way the first and most important lesson we learned was to not smuggle chickens into school but if you do decide to go rogue old McDonald just don't put the chicken in your backpack it will not go well secondly we've learned that grilled cheese tastes better in a church we don't know if this is because the food is blessed but lunches on Thursdays will not be the same without grilled cheesus we've learned a lot about people rampart high school taught us that surrounding yourself with great people only makes you better fortunately a rampart that's not hard to do the faculty is comprised of inspiring teachers and staff whose dedication to their students is unparalleled the senior class is full of insanely talented individuals that strive for greatness from arts to athletics from volunteering to academics our class does it all we've had so many memories at rampart that have given us pure joy experiences where when we think back only make us smile whether it's bonding with teammates through torturous conditioning feeling an overwhelming sense of community at bald for Buck's singing and dancing on stage with people that feel like family or just being plain goofy with friends I hope that all of you would have memories like this although our time at rampart has ended and a lot of us may have mixed emotions I hope that even though the final buzzer is sounding the curtains are closing the last hugs are being given and we won't get to see our administrators rap Ice Ice Baby anymore the people at rampart have given us a home and the stories that we remember and the experiences that we've shared will live on when we come back for a union even though the school walls will feel smaller and the people may be taller the memories will never change to friends and family thank you for believing in us unconditionally and dealing with our ID our attitude mom dad I love you I love you too mom and dad too teachers and mentors thank you for guiding us and putting up with our procrastination and to our fellow classmates thank you for the memories we never really knew that a school could actually teach you so much going forward we ask you only three things give your all and everything you do take risks to find your passions and be there for one another from now on wherever you go and in whatever you do you take rampart with you Thank You Brandon Thank You Ethan welcome to the 37th annual commencement exercise of rampart High School please let me begin tonight by thanking the Air Force for providing us access to this wonderful facility and please let me extend a great debt of gratitude to all those who bravely serve or have served in all branches of our military especially those who are currently deployed if I could please ask our staff members who have served in any branches of military and any member of the audience currently serving who are veterans to please stand and be recognized [Applause] thank you now it is my honor to introduce a distinguished group who joins me on stage tonight first miss Tracey Johnson President of the Board of Education mrs.
n de did you make on deep yeah what can you get that on to him and be another projection it small my projector that's on here that's very important that's not a picture of me all right welcome we're very excited tonight for whisk Ania we wanted to I wanted to spotlight our I know we've talked a little bit the board weeds before about the district about our om teams as to the mine teams we have a couple teams that will be going to the Nationals in Michigan Michigan coming up next week and I had asked the students to put a little presentation together you're gonna tell you a little bit about their job the OM is and they have a little slide show afterwards just to kind of show you some of the things that they've been working on so without further ado I would like to introduce first what we're gonna do yeah of course this is all volunteer time and I gotta tell you it is amazing for the amount of time and effort that is put into so much of their time to give in to you to make it so special for the kids and right now here two of our coaches here Mary Parish canola and enjoy divorce let's give a nice round of applause we were actually so our kids competed in the OM competition in March and one of them is actually gonna tell you what Odyssey the mind is but the special thing is that they came in first place in the entire state and earned a spot to go to World Finals in Michigan coming up next week we did not expect to come in first place they are really tough season teams we were aiming for second place and us we are the listener middle schools Odyssey of a Mayan world two finalists team I'm Emily Smith and my main job for the Odyssey of the my team would have been to make the costumes and I feel like that it was a pretty big job to make all of them pretty on stage did you like the biggest challenge for making the costumes was finding out what fabric would have worked best for what we were doing and how hard and it was really hard to sew the different layers of fabric together and it was also hard to make them stand still while I was fixing the costumes it was tough but we my name is Matthew in the six months we had to create our performance I was the main builder I had to use tools like a saw a drill and a screwdriver to construct our backdrop that had to look exactly like Leonardo da Vinci's workshop for example I created a shelf that had to hold some of his items I had to measure out the like the exact measurements of the inside of one of the things we used to create the backdrop after that I cut out a square piece of cardboard that was exactly that size and I wired it in and and then after that we had to hang pieces of art onto our backdrop that were made by Dane hi I'm Dani Carozza and I was the artist of the group thank you um one of the things I made was this it was one of Leonardo da Vinci's paintings the Portugal musician and my job well with this we weren't allowed to use traditional materials like markers paint or crayons so I decided to use like foods such as raisins lentils rice and sawdust and so I also created a picture of a half done Last Supper and those are some of the things they did as the artist of the group and I also wanted to address something about om one third of the competition at Olin is the spontaneous questions the spontaneous are short eight-minute challenges where we solve a problem that is like a brain teaser it could be hands-on where we build something or verbal where you get a question and we give a creative answer to the question and we're lastly you could get a verbal hands-on which is like a mixture of both where you build something and try to give a creative answer to what it is I would like to dress dia hi my name is da Girish Kumar and the main role I played in this project was to put mechanical things together and overall make things fit together in perspective I helped made I helped make the working model of the helicopter which was what something which was something that Leonardo da Vinci made and it actually spins I also helped put together the work on life-size model of the night made out of tinfoil let's give it up for Joe I'm Joe spares canola and I've been doing a 1/4 third grade and I played the Mona Lisa in the skit and my friend and my friend on Hayden divorce that's who couldn't be here tonight he played Leo and we basically did the like the improv comedy of the skit we and we also performed these songs which we used which were parodies of classic songs by Queen and we use them to debunk the the invention which and then we use and then we use them to perform the we use them to debunk the invention and we use them to debunk the invention and wait sorry and we use them to debunk the invention and then paid and wrote the rap battle that we did at the end which also debunked the invention and no it's hi I'm Ava hua Smith and as you might guess all of these kids working in the same room it there was a lot of chaos and yelling and just crazy things so that was where I came in and my job was to keep everybody on task and to get them to do what they were supposed to do and also I wrote the script for our skit and I also wrote the songs and we also have a slide show to show you guys what is Odyssey of the mind honesty of the mind is a creative problem-solving program involving students from kindergarten through college team members work together at length to solve a predefined long-term problem and present their solution to the problem at a competition we thought we'd explain what our problem was this year we chose a problem that related to classical history we had to study da Vinci and his works of art and how he react on how he lived in back in his day our team had to create three of his pieces of art one painting one 3d model and one team determined invention we also had to build an invention that didn't work back in his time but is commonly used now in modern times but that's not it we also had to have a pessimistic character who debunks Leonardo's invention causing him to throw it away then we had to create a small eight-minute skit that tied all of these things together and explained how explain the story but there was one more twist we couldn't get any assistance from any of our coaches or anyone outside the group we also have some pictures to show you guys from the whole year we did this this was the two with skinnier middle school teens after we found out that we won and we're going to world and this guy mascot this is Danny Hayden and Joe learning how to use tools and they're building our backdrop for the skit this is me giving Joe his makeup and that's him after he's all dressed up this is Emily when she was making the costume for us and these are us practicing our spontaneous problems this is also all the girls working on a spontaneous problem and this is the night that we all helps to build and these are I guess both of our teams the whisking your middle school teams before we were about to go on this is when we were waiting at the award ceremony and we're all very very nervous but this is after we found out that we won and next week we're gonna go to Michigan State University and compete [Applause] don't worry you guys aren't paying for the plane but again I think but I think it's really exciting and great about this is this is real authentic learning all the smarts intelligence and content knowledge and all the things that we learn you know in our regular days they're put on the spot for these problems and being able to be creative work as a team and I love that Ava said chaos because we all know when we work as a team sometimes there's chaos and there's nothing wrong with that but then being able to put it all together and perform and become in first place I think is really really awesome congratulations guys [Applause] oh yeah we need the background me to raisins but the amount of shadowing on it is amazing coaches cannot get up come on coaches I don't know if you had any questions for the kids absolutely guys so can you just one of the kids explain for me so I understand so how much do you know before the competition about what you're supposed to do like how long do you have to do it and then can you give us like an example of what you had to do like on the spot so we get a sense of it well we got basically just a paragraph of what our problem was about eight months before the competition so we had a little bit of time to figure it out and brainstorm and research Leonardo da Vinci but the things we have to come up on the spot is when we did the are spontaneous problems which is we don't know what it is so we have like about eight or so minutes to solve and like think about creative answers for it some hands-on things are well we there's many things you can do in a hands-on problem but we basically have to build things like I don't know like a bridge that holds in Agra something but hands-on is where you have to communicate with your team and really just build of like a structure in a certain amount of time great question for the coaches I know the cost for sending seven teams to Nationals is rather substantial and I know there have been some fundraisers are there any remaining from now to the time that you go and if anyone would like to donate we have a carwash Saturday so earlier senator school I believe it's 9:00 to 3:00 I'm nice I'm 9:00 to 3:00 there's a thing called um clucking and where we like would put like we would put like chickens like yeah plastic chickens on on like your lawn and then you'd have to give us money to to do it to someone else yeah that's great thank you everyone I'm gonna sneak in a second spotlight because it just happened somebody might might have seen it for all of you that follow me on Twitter whisker near one of our students of Mathcounts aditya shankar was number one in the state of connecticut at the Mathcounts he went to the Nationals and he ended up I think was 55th he was in the top 25% in the nation and the Connecticut team I think ended up being 19th but Aditya was in the top 25 percent in the nation thanks mister brother good luck to all the teams at Worlds afterwards okay next on the agenda is public comment and we have no one signed up is there anyone here that would like to speak all right hearing none we'll move on to the student representative report it looks like Maddie is not here this evening so we will go to written correspondence okay we have two correspondents one from Ron Jaffe regarding immunizations and one from Andrea Farris and regarding transportation thank you next disapproval Board minutes recommend a motion that the board approved the minutes listed below as recommended the regular meeting on May 1st 2019 and special meeting on May 1st 2019 second discussion Corrections edits I think there was one that Debbie had brought forth just a name spelling this any others all right all in favor aye opposed okay moving on to the superintendent's update all right Thank You mrs. Durham so I had Odyssey of the mind on for my first item on the superintendent's update and it was just to ensure that the board knew about the trip on May 21st through the 26th so the kids will be on their world championship tour so we're excited for that and also to mention that one of our local companies Praxair set up a grant for the students to offset the cost of the trip as was just asked about $5,000 so we're really thankful to pratice air for that and want to make sure we gave them a real nice thank you here publicly in addition moving forward on my report just an update we're keeping a close eye over at center school on this is Diamond and her team are keeping a close eye on kindergarten enrollment if I as of earlier this week that could have been updated in the last few days but 161 packets are out and formerly 148 students are registered right now just so you know we have eight sections of kindergarten budgeted and ready to go for next year which is the same as the current year if we had 160 students we're looking at 20 per section so we're watching that very closely it looks like we'll be right right in the sweet spot but over the summer we know a lot of kids move in we know some kids don't attend so it's something we need to keep a very close eye on now in going forward I'll keep updating the board each each particular meeting we just sent out a press release I have to thank mrs.

Holly mr. Burlando for putting a press release together up to the news times on our national French and Spanish contest 18 of our high school students either receive silver bronze or honorable mention in our second year real field high school competing in the national world language competition so incredible work going on there we'll really appreciate it and just like mr. Renda was sharing about our math counts winner this time of year the celebration of excellence really kicks in and there's just so many and we never we don't want it we'll never forget any of the kids but it's hard to get to all of the recognitions there's so many the next thing going on is brown bag lunches scheduled next week to meet with the seniors here at Brookfield High School with mr. bilenda and talk about kind of keep change stop or the good the bad and the ugly and learn from them as to what's worked really well for them what they think is great what we should keep and what we should encourage to continue and also what are some things we could do to improve and so we're gonna meet with the seniors about that and I'm working with mr.
Andy parks is over at the d20 stadium helping prepare for our soccer game everything changes but change itself and everything flows and nothing remains the same you cannot step twice into the same river for other waters and yet other things go flowing on ever herakleides said that he's a famous Greek guy parents and guardians I have no doubt that you can remember your child's first day of elementary middle and high school if you were to close your eyes right now you can remember different moments of their youth you could engage with them at different stages at different places on a road of memories that make your heart and rich soul no doubt being a parent is an exhausting emotional exercise but here you are tonight having realized the change from kindergarten parent to parent of a ramp our graduate I had one of those years where big change seemed to happen on the regular it got to the point where each morning I wondered what the day would take me what surprise was lurking around the corner waiting to pounce it all started last summer and instead of taking up skydiving motorcycle riding parkour paragliding or any other Bear Grylls type activity I chose the starpower weightlifting as my midlifecrisis activity it was good for a little bit and reminded me of my 20-something rugby's play herself I made the trip to lifetime with dedicated frequency and quickly incorporated squats leg press power claims and deadlifts into my workout now remember this was my midlife crisis so I had to sprinkle in some stupidity at some point and so one day at the gym I was feeling particularly cocky and felt like it was time to see what this 45 year old body had left in it after slapping on a couple of extra plates beyond what the reasonable me knew would be a sane manageable weight I had that self motivation conversation with myself just about when you're ready to do something stupid you know that you got this man be strong like bull that person over there just did it you did twice this weight in 94 you get the picture right so I lifted that weight felt a slight strain heard a weird popping noise felt some mild discomfort followed by real pain and yadda-yadda next thing I know my wife's driving means the surgeon who would be performing my double hernia surgery so as fate would have it I soon found out that my surgeon was also a rampart parent and I suddenly began invoking the protections of various patron saints that had learned about in my youth that this was not a parent I had in any way upset surgery went fine but the fact remained that physically I was a long ways away from my 20-something rugby days shortly before my surgery and my son also decided for the second time that college was not his thing and he decided to list in the US Navy yeah go Navy in the Air Force facility sorry sorry it was a struggle for me to get my head around it and I talked to various staff members who had been in in military service trying to get my head around what it meant for him me our family see my son is not just my son he's also my best friend fishing partner he's a gender balancer in a household with strong women and he's just damn fun to be around I feared the change that would come when I could not see or talk to him every day the first thing I learned about military is that they don't commit to hard and fast dates or times there's lots of waiting around and they are strong believers in very short notices also the bootcamp video as we watch together we're a lot of shouting and push-ups that seem to be the primary instructional and motivational methods used to communicate with new recruits up until this point the only adults who had yelled at my son were his mom his sister miss Brubaker miss Bryant mrs.
Renda and in the next couple of weeks on me with the 8th graders over at whiskey near so really exciting opportunities to connect with the students and get that ground-level feedback right from the kids of how we can continue to improve things here just like to turn it over I know I sent it in my Friday update if mr. post could just share a little bit about all-star transportation and what's going on with the DES for family instead of the ownership pieces if you just do a quick chair sure sure it's been a family-owned company for a long time and I got a call from John before a couple of weeks ago letting me know that his family has sold their interest in the company to student transportation of America which is a very large transportation company they do danbury and Wilton and a lot of other districts in Connecticut he also assured me and gave me correspondence from SDA that his family will stay in their roles running all-star as a subsidiary of sta so all the local people will stay and the management will stay running the company and we have after this year we have one year remaining on our contractor long start thanks again well before I get to immunizations I have two other updates I added just today and didn't have them typed in time for use I just want to let you know the first one is I have to thank Martin Fitzgerald I was had the pleasure and all the music teachers deserve a thank you at this time of year and in the middle of the year for their concerts that they put on but Martin Fitzgerald put a beautiful band concert on on Monday night with a hundred and twenty of a hundred and forty fourth graders it was incredible and mrs.
McMaster and me in the weeks before his departure as I tried to give him as much advice as possible until finally given in to the fact that the world he was entering was beyond my reach of control an acceptance of a new reality would be best moving forward he finally made it to boot camp in December and in the world the words thank you for your service would begin to take on new meaning for me so if having a rampart parent literally cut me open and then dropping my son off at MEPs in Denver to start military service was not life-changing enough my daughter decided to find her first real high school boyfriend so so when I say real boyfriend I'm talking about the kind that drives a sporty little Audi plays varsity football takes your daughter skiing and it's just months away from starting college my position as uber driver for movie pickups and Dutch runs had been eliminated part of me longed for both of my kids to be small again relying upon and protected by me in a way that I knew no longer possible a part of me was suffering from the good old day type mentality so faced with this uncomfortable change that I could not control I decided I needed to start making some decisions to wrangle control back into my life I started by adopting a black lab puppy named Steve Steve my early mornings were now spent feeding potty training playing fetch in mandatory cuddle sessions before I headed off to work he pretty much became my therapy dog for a while I decided to stop shaving and made this beard a new midlife activity that I felt was safe enough and a few months after surgery I returned to the gym having let go of my Olympic weightlifting dreams and I found yoga stairs and a reasonable weight resistance program for myself finally I came home one day flipped through all 789 cable stations that you get found nothing of interest to watch and decided to cancel cable I started reading more and I began to watch Netflix documentaries on the regular I came across a series that I began to binge watch called chef's table in one episode I learned the story about executive chef Muhammad Bailey a black woman and Ja No More Asano a white man that opened the gray restaurant in a formerly segregated Greyhound bus terminal in Savannah Georgia it was not so long ago to business partnerships such as theirs would not be possible mashaallah would not even be allowed to use the front door of the building that now has their restaurant the good old days would have made the possibility of creating and serving wonderful food to all people in one space impossible Mohammed is insist that throughout renovation signs of segregation remade in the updated 1938 art deco space she felt it was important to not erase the memory of what was once an acceptable way of thinking the story resonated with me and I found myself back on the stairs at lifetime listening to Led Zeppelin's Physical Graffiti and in its entirety contemplating the impacts have changed in time while we often cling to the way things were or we need to embrace the things that can be through a realization of proof progress open-mindedness and a better future for all humanity the cost of course is that some of the things we once held dear become artifacts and no longer a part of the equation perhaps the greatest cost is that in the blink of an eye our children stop being children in our world exclusively and become active parts of a global society in reevaluating the changes that overwhelmed me this year I began to have a new perspective on what my new normal was seeing my son graduated from navy boot camp was one of the proudest days of my life in his 20 years on this earth I have never seen him stand taller and carry himself in a way I had always hoped he would tears rolled down my face when I put my arms around him for the first time since going to boot camp once Liberty was called at graduation as I knew I was hugging my son as a man not a boy for the first time in my life I will worry about him every day when he deploys on the USS John P mirtha this June but I know he has found his way and I have found acceptance I have actually come to really like the boy in the sporty little Audi and I could not have asked for a better first boyfriend for my daughter he is kind compassionate caring makes me laugh and he embodies the best of this generation that stands in front of me tonight he enjoys my cooking he counts Simon & Garfunkel concert in Central Park amongst his favorite albums and he doesn't mind when Steve jumps on him or rips holes in his sweatshirt as far as Steve is concerned potty training is complete for the most part and mandatory cuddle time still happens every morning although now he weighs 70 plus pounds in fact we've pretty much started a bromance that I hope lasts a long time and while I hope to not have surgery anytime soon if I do I will make sure that my surgeon is smart enough to send their kid to the best school in the state of Colorado absolutely class of 2019 one thing that will never change is my love for you and memories that you have traced on my heart and my soul all the best tonight begging you to start realizing the change you can be in this world immediately thank you in the bottom of my heart you got speaker at large it is now my pleasure to introduce our student speaker the number 2019 at first glance appears to be rather insignificant just a miniscule meaningless point in time completely indistinguishable from any number that precedes or follows however upon further review the number 2019 can be broken down into two significant figures 2019 the year 2000 is significant because it marks the beginning of a brand new millennium we are the first class to graduate whose entire class was born in this the 21st century our class appeared 19 years ago at the turn of the century the same time as astounding innovations like the bluetooth earpiece automatic hand dryers and USB flash drives we belong to a phenomenon nicknamed Generation Z in a few simple words Generation Z is a group of kids who have grown up to be phone addicted and media obsessed sheep we are synonymous with YouTube Wikipedia and Facebook on a more serious note Generation Z is said to be kinder and more sensitive than any of their antecedent generations they were nicknamed the philanthropy it's because 76 percent of them are reportedly worried about the planet and 60 percent want their work to make a difference kids of the 2000 era could best be described as kind and caring now the number 19 19 is an odd integer okay whatever but it's also a prime number a prime number meaning it's only divisible by 1 and itself 19 is you can't because it's indivisible it is unbreakable it is strong and it is resilient as the class of nineteen we're significant because we two are indivisible unbreakable and resilient so if two thousand is representative of kindness and sensitivity and nineteen is representative resilient 2019 is a combination of the two to use one of Miz's Brubaker's favorite literary devices the number twenty nineteen is a juxtaposition of the numbers 2019 it's a fusion of caring to resilience our class is quantified as the integer twenty nineteen the number two thousand nineteen is rep is qualified as a blend of kindness and strength our class quantified by 2019 is qualified it's both resilient and compassionate 2019 is not just a number or a meaningless data point if thirteen years of liberal arts style education has taught me anything it would be that we are only aimless meaningless sheep if we choose to be you can make a difference you do matter you can be kind and resilient so choose to make a difference choose to be strong choose to be irrepressible thank you at this time it is my honor to introduce rampart sinks Asians under the direction of miss Melanie Reef who will be performing unclouded day [Music] [Applause] thank you so much it is now my pleasure to introduce Academy School District 20 superintendent dr.
LaRoche on oh and dr. peps auskey and I got to participate in a little skit and have a little fun with the kids and it was just a great experience and I just wanted to let the board know that it was a great opportunity and really appreciated and we try to get to as many of those conferences of camera so great job fourth grade band they were they were incredible and then also we announced the teachers of the year from each of the schools and then those four teachers will be before a committee and then will decide upon the district teacher there who will go on to the state competition so I just wanted to announce those formally that was just announced this morning from center school Samantha Hannon one of our resource teachers from huckleberry Molly prizeo a great two teacher from whiskey near Marcy Boone one of our special education teachers and from Brookfield high school or nesto Davila one of our Spanish teachers so we're really excited for the four of them and it's just an honor to be recognized by your peers that you work with day in and day out to say that you're there to represent them so we're really proud of them and appreciative of all their work and then finally I wanted to just update the board I know I sent a some information in the weekend update this past Friday just regarding immunizations and vaccinations around measles mumps rubella and that's in the news lately media's covering that there's some real concerns in New York and in some other areas nationwide we're fortunate at this point dr.
Mark Hackel dr. hatch Hill started his teaching career as a student teacher at district 20 s Air Academy High School in 2007 he was named superintendent of district 20 and after twelve successful years dr. hatch Oh will be retiring at the end of this year if you ask any student in the crowd what the job of the superintendent is the main priority is of course to call snow days I know I speak on behalf of the entire class of 2019 and saying thank you for all the snow days this year ladies and gentlemen please give it up for Academy school district 20 superintendent dr. Marc hassel [Music] and my mic reception and clap is louder this year because of all the snow days I can tell that thank you for the kind introduction I appreciate it I want to personally thank Brandon Flewelling who's been on my student advisory committee for the past two years and let me first say on behalf of my bosses the Academy 20 Board of Education congratulations to the class of 2019 it's amazing when I look around the crowd I see so many friends here quick quick congratulations to my friend Mike miles his son Anthony's graduating Laurie Edinburgh her her daughter Julia's graduating will tim be his son ethan is graduating a special congratulations to my good friend and assistant superintendent David Peake and his wife charity their daughter graduate Jordan is graduating tonight dr.
Cipolla if you would come to the podium because I'm sure we have some some information you could share with us as well we worked with dr. Ferrara from western Connecticut he's a pediatrician it helps consult with our western Connecticut area also with dr. Sullivan who's our public health doctor and in Brookfield were actually in very good shape with our public schools and our immunizations we're in alignment with our policy and we really have extremely high percentage of the students in terms of those who need to be immune his eyes immunized and are immunized with the exception of any medical exemptions and those kinds of things so we also have a policy if anybody's interested in taking a look pass that around our policy and that was updated in 2014 so anyway we're in really good shape the board may have some questions but I want to turn it over to dr.
Peake I'm not used to seeing you without your suit coat on but he's from Montana so he's probably really really warm tonight this morning I was sitting at the kitchen table with my son Mike and I told him today I was speaking at the graduation speech for rampart and I asked him what I should talk about and he said well dad perhaps you should talk about the importance of planning ahead now these are exciting times we live in but also times a great change and I always smile to myself when I hear the students say the struggle is real whether it's having to get up for school at 7:45 a.m. or having to do homework or not knowing someone's cell phone number I've heard that phrase the struggle is real I once had a student tell me you don't understand how real the struggle is because you're not that young and you probably don't even text now let me tell you when the struggle was real when I was in high school do you know back then if you wanted to change the channel on the TV you actually had to get up and change the channel [Music] in my day high definition was getting the rabbit ears just right and we didn't have 200 channels we had three and PBS which really didn't count in those days the struggle was real and you're not gonna believe this our parents made us walk or ride our bikes to school the struggle was real I didn't have a PlayStation 4 with high-definition graphics realistic audio and vibrating wireless remote we had monopoly I didn't have streaming music either we had eight track tapes and let me tell you it wasn't easy finding just the right color Leisure Suit to match your dates dress and to disco dance and platform shoes in my day the struggle was real to drive you had to learn how to use a clutch and stick shift and a ski you had to go up the mountain holding on for dear life to the t-bar and we didn't have a really nice superintendent [Applause] we went to school if there were four five six fourteen inches of snow as a matter of fact I never got a snow day the struggle was real and there was no find my friends app parents kept track of us by calling their friends and trust me on this one that was tough especially if you are like me and your dad was a principal and your mom was a teacher the struggle was real in all seriousness I think I know and understand many of the challenges you have you live in a complex interconnected world that never rests with pressures that are unimaginable in my day if you remember anything I say today remember this take care of yourself have resilience know that today's problems are just a blip on the screen years from now seniors as you go up on your Jersey seize the moment commit to not living a small life take that moment take a hard look at what you do if you had to do it all again on behalf of the nearly 30,000 students and staff in Academy district 20 best wishes and god bless [Music] thank you dr.
Cipolla she talked a little bit about some stats and some other details that really help us out yeah so I think some of you may have seen the state of Connecticut recently published the exemption rate both medical and religious exemption for all of the schools public and non-public in Connecticut I wanted to talk a little bit about that data just to explain in a little bit more detail what it is first of all the data that was published is actually from October of 2017 so it reflects last year's data our Center school nurse wants you to know that she wants to make sure you understand that when we're talking about the data it's from last year because this year we actually have a hundred percent of our students who are not exempt have had their full series and that's a big deal the second thing is that you know the exemption rate those are protected by I you know state law and so students with exemptions are not required to be to have immunizations they are required to provide documentation of the fact that they are claiming an exemption and it has to be notarized there's some really specific things that they need to do with that however this the rates that you see published reflect the percentage of students who have had their series right and who are not exempt there was a little bit of a misleading piece when the data was first published and I think that it was confusing when I first looked at it I want you to know that the state's actually revised and put out the data with a different cover page it was misleading in the sense that it said here's the percentage of students who have had their immunizations sort of I don't remember the precise wording but it said you know not including the students who were exempt so it looked like we weren't at a hundred percent here in brookfield the actual situation is that last year the 2017 data at center school in kindergarten we had three point four exemption rate that means that three point four percent of our kindergarteners last year either had a medical or religious exemption a hundred percent of the remaining students had their full MMR series when they entered school last year okay we did not have a hundred percent having a full series in some of the other areas because of the amount of time that you have to wait between a first dose and a second dose by the end of the year if they collected that data we would have been a hundred percent in every area okay so what it actually looks like is that something like the polio vaccine you can have a first dose a month before school and then you have to wait several months for the second dose so on October 1st all of the students who were not exempt had one dose it took a couple months to get everybody to have that second and that's really what you see when you look at the discrepancy a whisking year in seventh-grade were a hundred percent for full series for students who are not exempt um any questions about that before I go on because that was a little bit tricky when I first published that data right the way they wrote it was really misleading but I just wanted to share that like I said this year we started the year in our October data and you'll see it if they ever choose to publish it again would be we would be a hundred percent non-exempt students have their full series before they started kindergarten this data also includes our non-public schools so one of the things that I did recently was check in with st.

Joseph's School and Christian Life Academy as to the validity of the data sets Christian life Academy did want me to share some information they are very small school so a couple of students can skew the data very significantly and when you look at these percentages even though they tell you they're school-wide they are just looking at kindergarten and seventh grade so at Christian Life Academy just by chance a majority of their students who claim religious exemptions happen to be in kindergarten or seventh grade so if you actually were to calculate their religious exemption rate it's it's a 8.75% and they wanted you to know that because it is actually quite important next year their data is not gonna look precisely like that is really the bottom the bottom line but you know that religious exemption is important as a right that parents have and the other students are you know are complying for public law okay if we were to ever have and again for all of our students who don't have an exemption we are fully they have all had their full series of MMR if we ever had a case of measles reported we would I just want to share with you what we would do we would speak with our medical advisor dr.

Ferraro we'd share the information with dr. Sullivan the Department of Public Health would be contacted with that information and then we would work closely with the Department of Public Health to follow their recommendations for what to do there is a provision that if there was an actual measles case they may make a recommendation you know any students who do not have immunizations would be excluded from school and that could possibly happen they would also provide guidance on how to notify parents and things like that so it really is there have not been any children in the state of Connecticut to this point who have had a measles diagnosis this year in 2019 there have been three adults who have had measles but if there was a case of measles that's really how we would proceed we would it would be reported and we would be working very closely with medical advisors and the Department of Public Health to determine what the best course of action is thank you doctor small that's very clearly helpful could I ask a question just so I think you said this about three percent that have an exemption last year's data yeah three point four percent of our kindergarten students had an exemption and the way that that broke the way that that handout or actually I might I might it might be misquoting me here I three point nine I did rid the wrong number I apologize for that so three point six percent of that last year was religious and and zero point three percent is the medical so the majority of it is religiously I read somewhere that if you were over 95 percent even with those in there that there was a kind it completely eliminated the risk of any major outbreaks for exactly the reasons you said it's easy to manage in fact the advice you get as well as the magic number yeah and and dr.
Alvarez and mrs. Reynolds [Music] whoops my bad we're now going to hear from our valedictorians we'll begin with a denim good evening class of 2019 first off I'd like to thank God my family teachers school and district administration some coaches and friends for everything including the opportunity to speak before you today frankly put I could not have survived my education without you which is a common sentiment amongst rampart students thank you class of 2019 for creating an empowering community that has set precedents for future classes to follow and a special shout-out to the extraordinarily unique awesome DP family I wouldn't change the experiences that I've had with you guys for the world for this speech for this speech Missy ABAI is the best way to convey a message is to connect with an audience your personal experience to which the listeners may associate their own stories so I hope sharing my perspective with you prompts thoughts of your own experiences in confronting intimidating situations which have in turn provoked personal growth and discovery to phrase it concisely Zippity store deputies or hey here's my story one of my most defining memories is when I learned to swim in the deep end at the bottom and unfathomable ten feet down five-year-old me for the possibility of a sinister beast that lurked in the water I mused that perhaps my sister who is treading water easily could distract this monster as bait while I learned to conquer the depths yet I still couldn't overcome the fear that prevented me from jumping in somehow in a way unbeknownst to me I ended up in the deep end swallowing unsavory amounts of chlorinated pool water to this day I am not sure if I accidentally slipped in jump of my own accord or if someone pushed me which if that was the case only my dad and my sister were with me so I guess I can only think them now but at the time there were definitely vindictive feelings present but I digress what I am sure of is that my initial plunge into the deep end was a gateway into a watery world of self-discovery and has served as my reminder to wholeheartedly embrace challenges that arise we have finally reached a culmination of efforts spent in so many more ways than just academia the end game and as we face our futures we experience moments of hesitation some longer than others regardless of how you feel know that it doesn't matter how our journeys begin if our paths begin by chance if we jump in on our own or if we need a little nudge understand that we may struggle to keep our heads above the water but as soon as we dive into realizing our ambitions a world of opportunity emerges from these opportunities we recognize the things that we are truly motivated by we are responsible for seeking our own passions and exploration we can't linger on the edge of the water for allowing the hidden monster called fear to conquer you before ever even facing it is to surrender the battle before it has begun in what has been more than just extensive years of education we've run to isolate our own voice from the chaos to differentiate our true selves from what others perceive of us we've carved our own identities we are fully equipped to seize our chances the sky's the limit although please be sure to act them legal constraints which I guess means you still can't use Clorox wipes in an ASD 20 class or class of 2019 I hope you continue to inspire me yourselves and those around you jump in the water's fine thank you [Applause] fellow graduates teachers parents and administrators today is the day to reflect on the past and think about the future looking back at our journey we have so much to appreciate and be thankful for Thank You administrators for providing us with a nurturing environment for self development and thank you teachers for a high level education and motivation for excellence thanks to the hard work put forth by everyone we are able to stand here today at another important milestone of life we can also be thankful for the ramp our community that we are all a part of being within a community is so devoted to excellence is a gift that many unfortunately do not receive without this community we would not be offered the countless opportunities that we have for growth knowing that we always have the support and resources that we need for success evokes a feeling of pleasant encouragement contributing to this high achieving community with high expectations of something we should all be proud of another factor that makes us stand out is our uniqueness in my four years of walking down the hallways of rampart High School I've not witnessed anyone who is identical to any of their peers whether it be in their ass or their thoughts about the future everyone here has their own source of motivation and their own personal Drive for achieving their goals this shows that although we are nurtured by the warmth of our community we are also just as strong as individuals and that is something that will shine regardless of the gloomy weather that future challenges may threaten us with despite our different sources of motivation everyone here has walked down a path towards success all of us are gathered here today with the momentum that we have pieced together from all of our experiences from this point on it is important to Kindle this fire that is this momentum and use it to move forward towards the success that is bound to occur in the future I hope you move from today with a sense of accomplishment but also an accompanied feeling of renewed motivation for a future success congratulations class of 2019 [Applause] [Music] all right class of 2019 this is when it gets real right here now mrs.
Borel reached out to dr. Sullivan I've talked to dr. Furr about that yeah because we are above 95 percent of kids having had their immunizations we're very strong cave we're in very strong shape that it would not be any kind of significant problem here cuz 95 is sort of the magic number and we are we're above that excellent thank you thanks dr. DePaul and just another piece for the public and for the board in talking with dr.
