please welcome the representatives from summa laude Maggie Boltz Joanne Bitner Ethan Le Mans Cameron Martin Jack Leone Amelia Schmitz Lydia Taylor Eli tiemann and Abriana Woods [Applause] the first day of high school felt like we were entering into an entirely different world we are walking into a huge School filled with new people that all seemed to know what they were doing anxiety levels were high but so is excitement I'm sure many of you are feeling this way now we had come from being the oldest kids in school to being the Freshman the kids who got in the way and didn't know what they were doing we were the kids who walked on the wrong side of the hallway and asked for directions seriously on my first day I asked for directions to the cafeteria while I was in the foreign language hallway it's basically a straight shot we felt like we would be swallowed alive the minute we walked into the school coming from a place where we knew everyone to sitting next to someone that we've never seen before was really scary but we all eventually found a way to cope some of us chose to be quiet and shy While others said something to a classmate like do I have every class with you out of the blue just to try to make a friend each day got a little better and the seniors became a little less scary although I think we'd like to think were pretty scary other freshmen seem to open up and we all learned to walk on the right side of the hallway the transition wasn't easy but coming to a place like West made it just a little bit easier [Applause] freshman year was full of Firsts for all of us we went from the comfort of our own little middle schools to a school that is roughly 2 000 students strong that's more than an eighth of the size of the city oh I'm sorry Village of Millstadt although when you think about it that's not saying much regardless it was different and different is always scary it didn't take long for all of us to get acclimated to the new school and fall into our own niches once we did most of our anxiety was gone and we were able to begin to enjoy the first year of the best four years of our life or maybe for some of us we were able to begin the countdown to the last day of the best four years of our life either way we knew that Belleville West would be our home for the next four years and we started off with the mindset that we would make the best of the time that we had in high school and we sure started off strong at our first ever hobo day assembly the sophomores Juniors and seniors chanted the infamous go home freshman chant at us yet as many of you probably vividly remember we as freshmen walked away with first place while the senior class complained that it was rigged and gave us dirty looks it was supposed to hurt our feelings and put us in our place as freshmen but we all know that it only made the victory that much sweeter the rest of freshman year was a breeze compared to what the beginning of the year felt like the lock screen on our phones was no longer a picture of our schedule we stopped showing up to a majority of the clubs that we impulsively joined at the beginning of the year and West finally began to feel like home in August of 2014 we walked into West to start a new year this time we were excited for an entirely new reason we weren't freshmen we would finally be giving directions rather than asking for them the best part though was that we could yell go home freshmen with the upperclassmen we really thought we were cool didn't we we helped fill the gym with shouts during the hobo day assembly but we couldn't quite pull off another win I guess you can't have everything and three out of four is pretty good once we finally got over that loss we all looked forward to bigger and better things like driving this was the year of driver's ed the year of awkwardly quiet test drives many traffic law violations and 50 completely authentic hours on a log sheet some of us didn't start driving until junior year but this was a start our teachers on the other hand decided we'd had enough practice and classes started to get harder we might have wished we were freshmen again just for a day so we could at least get a little sympathy sympathy from them we got our introduction to chemistry and speeches in English class maybe you liked one both or neither of these things but I can tell you that I wish I had paid closer attention to miss slusher's speaking tips right now at the end of the year you might have felt like nothing special happened really of the four years it was probably the least memorable but like all our time spent at Belleville West it was definitely worth it [Applause] as sophomores we were now more comfortable in our surroundings for the first time Wes started to feel less like the place where we went to school and more like the place where we belonged it was no longer just a building full of strangers it was a building full of strangers and friends the faces in our classes were ones we knew ones we had already shared an entire year of memories with and we were looking forward to making more together granted our promotion to wise fools came with a cost of additional homework and less hand-holding but by this point we were more or less prepared for it even if we didn't feel prepared we weren't in Kansas anymore this was the real deal at the same time sophomore year is like the awkward middle child of the high school years we weren't the weird hippie freshman just entering the school we weren't as cool as the rock star Juniors and didn't have the seniority of the seniors we were the Nerds still struggling to figure out what exactly we would do in high school thus we don't have fond memories of it like we do the other years be honest how many of you remember more than very specific and humorous instances of teachers misspeaking from sophomore year but just because you don't remember these experiences it doesn't mean they aren't important in many ways sophomore year laid the foundation for all the fun we would experience in Junior and Senior year to come [Music] it's junior year and it seems like we're so close to graduation yet still so so far away for the class of 2017 this was the year of a monster calls a book we are supposed to read as a school but that most of us ended up losing within a few days junior year also marked the end of waiting in line to take School mandated yearbook photos and the beginning of standardized testing and Life After High School preparation for some of us who had been avoiding thinking about what we are going to do with our lives junior year became a brutal wake-up call to start thinking about college or the military or going straight into the Working World but for those of us who had been planning for the end of high school since Grade School junior years seemed to drag on and on it seems safe to say that by junior year we felt comfortable in high school we had our friends our lunch table and even our preferred staircase many of us had our own driver's license and a feeling of Newfound Freedom that came from driving on her own by this time in our lives many of us had started to form ideas about who we were and where we were headed something Michelle Obama once said seems particularly relatable to this time in our lives it goes you may not always have a comfortable life and you will not always be able to solve all of the world's problems at once but don't ever underestimate the importance you can have because history has shown us that courage can be contagious and hope can take on a life of its own it seems that not many of us remember a lot about their junior year probably because our brains have repressed the memories of standardized testing and preparation for Life After High School speaking of Life After High School kind of hits you like a brick during junior year Speak oh sorry everyone and their mother asks about your plans after high school but you're just trying to make it through the week the only thing that kept everyone going was the longing for senior year the thought that it would be only one more year to the best year of high school although from what little memories are left from junior year it seems like a lot of us had seniority to see me for the end of first semester everything seemed to be expected from us all at once and we weren't entirely prepared for it we had to know what we wanted to spend the rest of our lives doing which some of us still don't know the thought of Life After High School became real during junior year however that just added to the excitement of getting to try something new and choosing what path to go down while continuing life's journey finally after all the preparation of junior year we made it to our last year of high school for some of us this was highly anticipated one step closer to moving on with the rest of our lives others couldn't imagine leaving West behind so soon and planned on making the most of every moment we had left together whichever category you fell into I'm sure we can all agree that the end has been bittersweet as the end of our high school careers this year has been filled with last our last hobo week last high school finals last time to go to prom and after prom and our last time writing insult inside jokes and everybody's yearbooks and in a little bit it'll be our last time walking out of this building fortunately though we got to experience a lot of Firsts this year too this was the first year that we were allowed to play on a donkey basketball team participate in Mr maroon and go to the senior barbecue things we've been waiting for since freshman year for the first time our lives After High School were something we had to seriously consider and not just for the sake of all the worried adults around us because the real world was fastly approaching these past months alone have been filled with tons of important decisions that will affect our futures in so many different ways for me it's always helped to keep these words from Abraham Lincoln in mind the best way to predict your future is to create it and as our high school experience comes to a close we will finally be able to take this advice foreign whoever said that four years flies by was right it seems like just yesterday we were walking through the front doors on our first day of senior year it was weird to be called a senior then but we knew when we heard it that we had finally made it we became the true upperclassmen the top dogs at West we walked around the halls feeling right at home because during our time here we made West into our home the past three years started to blur together a little freshman year feels like it happened either yesterday or decades ago all of our favorite events have come and gone now but we will always remember the memories we made together as a class we will never forget how good Mr Lombardi's pancakes are or how he became the first class ever to win the hobo day assembly games for three out of our four years now as seniors most of us have figured out who we are and decided what we want to become the future is wide open for us we get to decide which path to go down even though we'll all be traveling down different paths whether it be towards College the military the workforce or someplace else we will always be connected to each other as members of the bevel West class of 2017.

year and Senior years as well unaware of all the amazing people we would meet and spend the next four years of Our Lives creating memories and friendships that we remember and cherish for the rest of our lives I love the bevel West class of 2017 and have all the confidence in the world in US we are hard-working group that can accomplish anything we put our minds to if we are persistent and give it our all back in 2013 when we started this journey we were all young immature people who were largely dependent upon others for everything but over the past four years we have transformed into more mature more responsible more self-reliant young adults of course we know we know that none of this would be possible or I'm sorry of course we know that none of us would be where we are today without the guidance and support of all of our amazing parents Guardians and family members I'd also like to thank all the teachers at Bubba West for helping us grow and develop these past four years for devoting their lives to giving us the tools we need to succeed and inspiring us to do so now I'd like to ask a graduating class to give all the parents Guardians family members and teachers in the audience a big round of a big round of applause [Applause] lastly I'm sorry lastly I'd like to give thanks to the class of 2017 for all of their persistence and dedication over the past four years I'm honored to have walked the halls with the greatest class to ever walk the halls of Belleville West there's no other group of people I would have wanted to take this journey with now I hope now I hope America and to the Republic for which it stands one nation under God indivisible with liberty and justice for all thank you and please be seated I see I see I at this time please welcome NHS president Elizabeth [Applause] Jensen on the first day of kindergarten my mom rode the bus to school with me I was afraid of the big kids and afraid that I would somehow get lost and get off at the wrong stop so when it pulled up at my house for the very first time my mom climbed right in behind me and the next day I climbed on all by myself on the first day of Junior High my mom went in early with me and let me open my locker a few hundred times she walked with me to all my classrooms so I could find them later when school started and we went to my locker in between each one so I could practice the combination just one more time the next day I opened that Locker all by myself on the first day of High School embarrassingly enough I came prepared with a map of the hallways I was terrified of getting lost so my mom went in early and mapped out all of the rooms all the doors on all the lockers mine was marked with a big red X on the second day I found my classes all by myself now I could find them in the dark on the first day of college all my possessions will be in place in my dorm room thanks to my family they'll help me put everything exactly where it needs to be they'll reassure me that I won't get lost and then they'll climb in their car and drive away so what then then I'll have to ride the bus by myself I'll have to make my own maps and Patch my own jeans I'll wake up and have no one to Grumble at as they say good morning often times love is expressed in small ways like that a good morning or a be safe or a sleeping figure on the couch when you get home late at night waiting with the light on I remember once as a a child I told my parents I never want to move out I want to stay here forever they laughed at me and told me I'd changed my mind and I'm sure all of you can agree with me when I say that they were right but I will still miss them every single day I love you Mom and Dad I know I don't say it enough I know many of us don't say it enough to those who have helped us through these past four years so often we forget to show our gratitude for the people close to us for the things they do every single day so thank you Mom and Dad thank you for making me the person I am today I don't know where I'd be without you but I certainly wouldn't be on this [Applause] stage next is our valedictorian Nick Lopes [Applause] since the dawn of our country the United States has been fueled by Innovation the principles of our society Champion individualism and creativity which has benefited not only us but the world in numerous ways our country system which allows improvements to be made upon many inventions benefits designers and the everyday consumer alike the profits of these inventions often help help the world through charity this great system has become an oversight to many the discussion of labeling groups by race gender and Creed often dominates the media and everyday conversation while these topics are important especially given the history of our country I feel that we must always remember the principles that endow us to discuss these topics without this system one which rewards hard work free thought thought and individualism many of us would struggle to accomplish anything in life as the burden against each of us would be nearly insurmountable I believe our high school experience has given us so many lessons on the principles of our country along with the tools with which each of us needs to succeed class variety Sports options and the Arts in the school have allowed each of us to have a truly different experience one that gives all of us regardless of our background and this labeling a chance to succeed in an economy rewarding being great at something some of us may become a great business owner some an invaluable parent one may become a person who gives a struggling kid with a bad home life a chance to succeed just by being a great mentor my favorite quote is by the late Victor Frankle a Nazi concentration camp Survivor quoted as saying live as if you were living already for the second time and as if you had acted the first time as wrongly as you were about to act this quote presents the idea that each of us should strive to achieve truly great goals because we only get one opportunity now I know the world isn't as simple as high school but I hope each of us can use our experiences from from here to walk through those doors and succeed thank you Brown County it's been great [Applause] at this time the bchs choir will perform Joy be with you all e e for friendship and family for all in life that School of Medicine his studies and work have taken him to live in Arizona Arizona Kenya and Thailand Dr Waters will be leaving soon for a one-year sabatical to work and live in New Zealand and Bhutan there he will be a clinical professor of medicine for IU and will teach with a focus on Emergency Care stress response and Wilderness medicine currently Dr Waters is an Emergency Physician and the emergency medical director at IU Health in Bloomington Dr Waters is married his wife Melissa is an OBGYN and they have two daughters who eagerly await their next adventure it is my pleasure to welcome Dr Drew waters before I say anything else I just like to say congratulations to all of you uh every single person in the audience here has struggled some publicly some privately but every single one of you has struggled to get here today and that is a huge award and a huge Commendation to you so I'd like to collectively congratulate all of [Applause] you there are a few moments from today that will likely be memorable to you uh there are things I remember I remember someone telling me they thought one day I might be a senator I remember being naive to think that was a compliment uh I remember being given a a very treasured book by a wonderful teacher Miss Manning called the given and the made and that's somewhat would like to speak to you today about is about success and about failure all of you are about to graduate about to go out to the world with something the world's never seen before with yourselves something entirely new some of you are going to hit the ground running and some of you are going to stumble and I will talk a bit about how you move forward first and foremost we're going to finish high school with one last grammar lesson and that's on the idea of success and on failure you are not a success and you are not a failure those are not static nouns that you should think of think of that as succeeding and failing to succeed and to fail those are action verbs every day is a commitment every day you have to get up you're going to have days that you don't win you're going to have days that you feel really really bad but you have to get up and commit yourself to moving forward that's what it means to succeed I'm an Emergency Physician I've seen people in their absolute worst much of my job involves people treating themselves and others poorly but that's what I'm there for is to help people their worst so I want to try to Enlighten you with some of what I've learned from traveling the world ultimately no matter what the country what the culture what the disease process It ultimately doesn't matter it all comes down to taking care of people and to succeed and to fail comes down to two main things to care and to commit the most successful people in the world are not the smartest they're not the richest they're T typically the ones who are the most committed the most driven to continue that fight I show up every day at work many days I fail there are many any patience I can't save but the next day I show up and I clock in I'm back at it again and that's what I look forward to seeing you bring to the world that commitment whatever it is that is you bringing you to the world and every day no matter hard the how hard the day before was I look forward to seeing you get up and striving committing and caring the first of it has to start with caring the worst people in the world you will ever meet are those who lack empathy in your relationship with others and your relationship to yourself commit yourself to caring for yourself commit yourself to actually caring for others and that above all is going to matter the next step which is the committing it's very easy to make Grand ideas it's very easy to make grandiose you know claims of what you're going to do it's easy to blame other people for your setbacks but real success real failure that ongoing process is all about commitment how are you going to make your way in the world how you going to step up and find your way I'm a big fan and I teach my daughter is the term situational awareness what's the situation around you and what's your role minute where do you want to see yourself go every single one of you is going to take a path that's different from everyone else in this room no one else can make that path for you some of them are pretty amazing though I have no doubt and I personally look forward to seeing what you bring to the world and can't wait to find out where we find ourselves in another 21 years once again thank you and Hi, my name's John. I lead the search and machine learning teams at Google. I think it's amazingly inspiring that people all over the world turn to search engines to ask trivial questions and incredibly important questions. So it's a huge responsibility to give them the best answers that we can. Hi, my name's Akshaya and I work on the Bing search team. There are many times where we will start looking into artificial intelligence and machine learning, but we have to address how are the users going to use this, because at the end of the day, we want to make an impact to society. Let's ask a simple question. How long does it take to travel to Mars? Where did these results come from and why was this listed before the other one? Okay, let's dive in and see how the search engine turned your request into a result.
⚗ AI-reconstructed · cite from original above
The first thing you need to know is when you do a search, the search engine isn't actually going out to the World Wide Web to run your search in real time. And that's because there's over a billion websites on the internet and hundreds more are being created every single minute. So if the search engine had to look through every single site to find the one you wanted, it would just take forever. So to make your search faster, search engines are constantly scanning the web in advance to record the information that might help with your search later. That way, when you search about travel to Mars, the search engine already has what it needs to give you an answer in real time. Here's how it works. The internet is a web of pages connected to each other by hyperlinks. Search engines are constantly running a program called a Spider that cross through these web pages to collect information about them.
⚗ AI-reconstructed · cite from original above
Each time it finds a hyperlink, it follows it until it has visited every page it can find on the entire internet. For each page the spider visits, it records any information it might need for a search by adding it to a special database called a search index. Now, let's go back to that search from earlier and see if we can figure out how the search engine came up with the results. When you ask how long does it take to travel to Mars, the search engine looks in each of those words in the search index to immediately get a list of all the pages on the internet containing those words. But just looking for these search terms could return millions of pages, so the search engine needs to be able to determine the best matches to show you first. This is where it gets tricky because the search engine may need to guess what you're looking for.
⚗ AI-reconstructed · cite from original above
Each search engine uses its own algorithm to rank the pages based on what it thinks you want. The search engine's ranking algorithm might check if your search term shows up in the page title, it might check if all of the words show up next to each other, or any number of other calculations that help it better determine which pages you'll want to see and which you won't. Google invented the most famous algorithm for choosing the most relevant results for a search by taking into account how many other Web pages linked to a given page. The idea is that if lots of websites think that a web page is interesting, then it's probably the one you're looking for. This algorithm is called page rank, not because it ranks web pages, but because it was named after its inventor, Larry Page, who's one of the founders of Google.
⚗ AI-reconstructed · cite from original above
Because a website often makes money when you visit it, spammers are constantly trying to find ways to game the search algorithm so that their pages are listed higher in the results. Search engines regularly update their algorithms to prevent fake or untrustworthy sites from reaching the top. Ultimately, it's up to you to keep an eye out for these pages that are untrustworthy by looking at the web address and making sure it's a reliable source. Search programs are always evolving to improve the algorithms wo they return better results, faster results than their competitors. Today's search engines even use information that you haven't explicitly provided to help you narrow down your search. So, for example, if you did a search for dog parks, many search engines would give you results for all the dog parks nearby, even though you didn't type in your location. Modern search engines also understand more than just the words on a page, but what they actually mean in order to find the best one that matches what you're looking for.
⚗ AI-reconstructed · cite from original above
For example, if you search for fast pitcher, it will know you're looking for an athlete. But if you search for large pitcher, it will find you options for your kitchen. To understand the words better, we use something called machine learning, a type of artificial intelligence. It enables search algorithms to search out not just individual letters or words in the page, but understand the underlying meaning of the words. The internet is growing exponentially, but if the teams that design search engines do our jobs right, the information you want should always be just a few keystrokes away.

we've gone over the post editor before and how to create hyperlinks in brief detail but this video is all about creating links on your WordPress website in this video I'll show you how to create links it's a good idea to have links on your posts for content that might be useful for other readers if you remember I went over how to create links using text for a quick refresher we can head to one of our posts I want to link some text on this post so to do that I can highlight the text that I want to link and then hit the hyperlink button once I've done that I'll be able to choose where I want to link it to in this little box here I can choose to link it to another page on my own WordPress site by typing in one of the page titles or I can choose to link it to another external website and to do that well simply paste in the URL from that website we can also edit our link by hitting the edit link button which allows us to change a few options including if we want the link to open in a new tab or not now we can head to preview to see what this link looks like did you know you can also use images to create links this is a way to create a sort of button on your site where when the user clicks the linked image they'll be taken to another page or download file that you've attached to that image for example you could have a picture of a restaurant menu then when clicked it downloads a PDF of the menu for the visitor to look at I'll now head back to one of my posts where I have my sample PDF document first things first click on the PDF link and make sure to copy the URL address from that link I'll now attach a document to an image so I can go to the add media menu and select an image to add and then I can choose from the options on the right side what I want the image to link to I'll go down to custom URL and then paste in the link that I just copied from that PDF document and now that image is linked to this PDF document and that was just a brief overview of links and how they work together on your WordPress website stay tuned for more helpful video tutorials thanks for watching [Music] you [Music]
