why Connick and I talked to the the committee about reinstating the unaffiliated clerk position many of you may recall that in the development of the 1819 budget in order to make the number from the reductions through the budget process one of the decisions was made to eliminate there was three part-time clerks at the time that help manage PPT invitations and other other clerical duties which we thought we might be able to get by on with teeth teachers picking up some of the slack there in the work and the reality is that's just even with professional development provided the time just isn't there to do that work with the focus and expertise frankly that it takes and so we found that time is being taken away from teachers time to plan for students and work with students in order to do basic clerical things like developing invitations making phone calls rescheduling meetings and while that seems pretty straightforward to coordinate six or seven or eight different people to have a meeting it just is very difficult and cumbersome and we don't want to have teachers spending 45 minutes per invitation and I think we're somewhere around 200 invitations already this year so we really need someone dedicated to that work we have a existing clerk position that was a greeter position at huckleberry that position has been rien reassigned as a clerical special education clerical position at the middle school and that in that new person will be starting very soon but in terms of reinstating the hours that we lost we would need to hire someone for that position and it would be 18 hours a week there it's a budget neutral move the way we're taking a look at this the remaining costs for the for the remainder of the years a twelve-months position so we're looking about eight months left in the year by the time we hire somebody looking around $11,000 we would recoup that money as we look at the scope of the year from the extended duty line that's actually the next item on the new business and the agenda with the budget transfer and we would finish out the balance of this year use of utilizing those funds so wouldn't be any budget neutral we're not asking for any new monies and so we'd like to have the board support the personnel negotiations committee is behind it and I'm certainly here to answer any questions and mrs.

white onyx here to come up and answer any questions as well I just wanted to note that the personnel negotiations committee unanimously supported this recommendation and I'll also add that right after the personnel and negotiation committee i briefed the Finance Committee and they unanimously supported the change and have recommended and supported the budget change which is the next thing on the agenda and I really thank everyone for their support and for being so open to listening to the conundrum we find ourselves in and you know I think it's it goes it speaks to the the responsiveness of our district that when we think we might not need a position anymore I want to reallocate staffing we do and when we look back and say hey in hindsight maybe this wasn't the right decision and we need to reinstate something we come to the board and say you know let's make this right we're overworking staff we have two secretaries that that handle this right now and it is overwhelming they can't do the superior job in the time that they have and they want to do a great job at this and we want to make sure that invitations and other things that go on in the special education department that we're there for this for the spam of the families of students with special needs and we're responsive to them and also supportive of our teachers and our teachers time which is so valuable so it really is a whole listen to this I was bringing these positions John can I just ask sure um so when we eliminated three part-time positions from from the budget last year to save 26,000 does this this replaces only one of those or or we it probably the equivalent of two okay the third the third one is kind of picked up by the other clerk position which was not dedicated to special education clerk work the other position was we had I think you know the setups of both elementary schools there's two secretaries at each elementary school with budget reductions over the years we took the caloric visit there was a clerk position in the office that has it reader that helped the two secretaries in terms of the signings Aaron sent out we had eliminated that position and so there was only the one left for huckleberry we've reassigned that position to a special education clerk position so now there's the two secretaries in each elementary school with no greeter a clerk person so the Secretary's handle letting the folks in and out of the building as well as their regular secretary old yes so if I remember the numbers those are three point two five three point two five quarters positions yeah three quarter positions we eliminate it that's like 0.75 in aggregate and these are two point four positions essentially the squeeze a redone one at the middle school on this one so actually I think we're adding a little bit more well that's kind of what I was getting at must feel like 18 hours is enough you actually three six okay yeah but net we're down because we don't have those reader positions anymore not that they were working towards special education but net as a district holistically we are down so that's just something for everybody to know but you know these these peace positions are the ones you look at when we have difficult decisions to make with but budget decisions to make and it's don't affect the students directly with the teaching and so we have to find other areas so but this is you know we have to make some sacrifices and we think you know reducing the the extended duty line as we look at the recent history and you know the scope of work for the plan going forward this year we can absorb that for the year and then so this will be something we put into the budget proposal for my December presentation next year I think we should just I mean I would like to get feedback you know over time maybe in three months or so just to make sure that it's it's enough and that sure everything you know we're staying within compliance yes thank you I appreciate that anything else any other questions discussions bring it to a boat then all in favor aye post thank you everybody and then that brings us to a related budget transfer request recommend a motion that the board approve one budget transfer as requested by director of business and operations can post okay all right now that brings us to the this is just an action that the boy received the calendars sure so while this is an action the the while there's no rush the board certainly has time to contemplate the calendar while it's early in the year the board if the Lord feels they would like to adopt the calendar more than welcome to so it's a pretty traditional calendar from the experiences we've had this current year in years past um one thing we two things we did to take a look at this from the discussions and feedback from the board to me over the past year which was take a look at smoothing out smooth smoothing out the fall so it's not as disjointed as a schedule if you take a look we have our typical professional days at the beginning of the year starting just prior to Labor Day the Labor Day holiday and then on the 20th of September Yom Kippur we do not have Rosh Hashanah during the week next year its celebrated on a weekend so that's one less day off in addition to that I did what the board asked took a look at Columbus Day Columbus Day falls on October 12th what you'll see it's indicated in pink there we worked with the administrative team and one of the thoughts was to have the kids in - to not have as many days off like we just experienced this week where we had Columbus Day Off for the entire district and then Tuesday off for professional development we would the proposal here is that the twelfth which is Columbus Day would be a day on the only folks that wouldn't be on would be nurses and paraprofessionals we'd handle that through contracts there's only a couple of contracts affected where specifically Columbus Day is discussed and we could work a floater holiday and we've talked with the heads of each of the unions and had some good conversation about that so that's the proposal for Columbus Day and as you can see the fall is a smoother fall than we've had in the last couple of years which are the two big pieces of feedback I received from the board so I think we've achieved that you can see we we stack the first part of the year with those pink boxes which are for professional development days to in August one in October one in November which is election day we have our typical early dismissals for the Thanksgiving holiday and for conferences and the other part about this and again I know you've looked at this in advance so I'm not going to go through every month is the the law changed you recall that for this this year last year we planned in the year before we plan 185 days statute said that if you had a hundred eighty-five scheduled days for students that before April 1 you could then make your graduation date so to get an early jump on graduation date because Brookfield likes to do with the tradition is a Saturday it's very important to find that day and then of course we use the O'Neill Center at Western now as if you we don't have to schedule 185 even or student something Oh 182 with emergency days we could just schedule our 182 days it's now down to 180 and so we don't have emergency days built in and June there's no need for that we're adding on to the end if we have snow days we'll add them on to the end of June so the last day 180 second day is June 14th in this proposal and other than that it's a pretty standard calendar if there isn't there's a lot to explain that's different from any other year but I'm here to answer questions there are five full weeks of school and for instruction just in September and October and I think that's significantly more than we've been experiencing lately so that's I'd like that what's the dark green okay for not dark down there but it's okay I see so the last day is June 14th and then any snow days so so we have just like we've done the last few days and there's a paragraph there to the right joy of June you can see it there we explained like we've the last couple of years so nothing's changed in that regard which is we will add on to June if we experience a fifth a sixth snow day at six I said prior to the February long weekend which is again not a full week anymore we will take from that long weekend and have school so we don't stack up early in terms of missing days once we get past the February break all the days continue to be added onto June we made the commitment that the April break so everyone knows when the April break is they can schedule their vacations for everybody families staff etc that April's sacred unless we have some weird situation well actually not too weird we had one year and a half ago where yes right we don't want to talk about that right where we to get our 180 days we would go into you know past June 30 so we'd have to make them up in it over the April break so we don't want to talk about that so are there any questions does everyone want to take a look at this a little bit more to next six okay one more time - yeah if you think of something you want to ask a question please send me something in the next week or so I should go back was there any original comments right now okay right so that brings us to the district enrollment report all right so it was a memo in your packet this week with the district enrollment report this is an annual report I provide and there is a chart attached at the back the main the main thing that we there's a couple of main pieces I would like everybody to get to know number one October 1st is the state day that we all all public schools count their students on October 1st so we could get an accurate enrollment and that's what we use in our budget development that's what we use when we compare and I'll talk about it in just a second we asked them alone in the room to update their recent August report by using the October 1 data so as soon as we had that we sent that off to the folks at Malone on the Brooke there are three main categories besides total that we look at pre-k through 12 we look at our English language learner population we look at our free and reduced lunch population and also our special education populations so if you look at the chart on the second page toward them toward the bottom well first of all the chart itself just gives a four year compare that's what we've done over the last four or five years we just go back only four years we certainly have the data and can go back further if people are interested but you look toward the bottom of the page you'll see that our total students on campus is 2609 which is right on target with the mulana McBroom updated report so our October one jives with what was produced in August from the one room in terms of totals you'll also see that special education students who are out placed is down one this year to 30 and that is something we've really been mindful of managing and working on as best we can obviously meeting students needs and having them in the best setting for themselves but also developing programming in-house and one of the things that has happened over the years is there's been an increase in students being out placed and frankly holding being down one things can change in a couple of weeks with students who might move in or students who might be in the pipeline for needing additional services but holding holding steady is actually I think a real it's a real win in terms of making sure we're programming properly for students and also being fiscally responsible and really taking a look at what we have to do so the grand total when you include the 30 students who are out placed because those are also our students is 2639 which in total is down nine from the year before from last year interestingly what you'll see is students who qualify for special education is actually up five students from 376 to 381 our English language learner population is up for students from 111 to 115 and another significant jump and students who qualify for free and reduced lunch and that has to do with the economy you know student their their parental income and that is from 496 up to 545 students which is up 49 students so last year was an enigma in the increase which is was about 200 students the qualifications changed that this the the state guidelines so that happened everywhere there was a big jump butts to have another 49 students and so as our total population mildly decreases these numbers of more needy populations are increasing and so our percentage a concentration of students that come in and having special needs or other areas that that could be difficult or challenging increases so it's just interesting dynamics that we've seen in our demographics over the last few years so another thing has any questions but I did want to make sure that I tied this into the Malone and Bruno Broome update which their August report is accurate to our October 1 data is what we're saying and of course kids move in and out all year long so things change but we really need to anchor to October 1 so we don't get confused to use different data and then as a follow-up to this dr.

Ruby at the November 6th will meeting will do her annual report where she talks about the class sizes and all that kind of stuff shall we go through that so any questions it's a pretty straightforward report I'm sorry what's that essential the biggest job oh yeah and that's that's where we're seeing and Ken and I as we start to talk to the principal's about budget and we really start to look at sections of students and oh yeah and that's the jump that's really gonna impact the new school so please go out jump enter so we have them alone report we can good we can segue into that now or we can wait and do that in the new school building project but if you want to comparison if to your point we can actually go through that now we could do that or do it yeah however works whatever you guys would like to do and I also invited Jeff Lozinski from follow name of run up from Alona preferred Tecton to be here tonight sorry Jeff sorry he's got great news from Amana McBroom though that that he and Claire were talking about to the NBC meeting last night so some really good some some good positive things but anyway wherever we want to talk about it we can anybody I know I sent it to you about a week or so ago so we'll put this in the very good it's just one agenda item away thank you [Music] preliminary rate now again preliminary discussions just with with Canada me we have any talks to the princess yeah about that our elementary principal looks like huckleberry may be down one section but central would be right and center would be up to so of three excuse me could be up as much as three so we've got to study that yeah because we have what is it we nine and a rate right now a projection based on the projections we would need ten intend to stay under our max yeah so the the younger students are really there can again and so that's another reason I wanted to ensure that Jeff was here when we talk about the new school and conceptual design design phase is horribly accommodating for this extra one hundred nine to 120 kids that we might see in the eighth year projection from what we we had from along a group from June of 2018 so all right so any questions just in regards to the this year's okay thank you okay so then we can move on to the prioritize 2021 and updated ten-year prioritized capital projects discussion mr.

Poston okay so the Luminess was discussed at the Facilities Committee couple weeks ago it is again based on the ten-year building conditions studied that tec-9 did for us last year in year one of this plan we have the five projects that were on year one last year that got deferred and that would be the first three on the list for the high school and the first two on the list for the middle school and then anything that was on year two and last year's plan has moved into year one and the same with all the other subsequent years everything everything was moving up one year and then for year ten in this plan I pulled these items from the ten plus year column in the Tecton building condition study plan so the only change to this ten-year plan versus last year it's just the addition in year one I mean of course here two has become your one addition of all of those that we're not improved correct okay may I'm sorry if I may if you look to page two being the new school was approved there is no monies being allocated for huckleberry and center school so actually the 10 year capital plan that mr.

post is presenting is a lot less thanks for pointing that out and one other thing one of the other items that was deferred last year was paving at center school to pave around the back public works department did that for us this summer so we we no longer need that on the plan and we did get security approved at both of those schools great and then the other other thing I want to point out is the the fourth item on the high school that boys locker room renovation we have tacked on working on the design and budget estimate for that so we have the six hundred five thousand dollars in here is a placeholder so that may change at some point in time in the process in terms of process while the board looks this over and I know you had it in advance and and does not have to be voted on tonight again the board can choose to handle that the way they would like I spoke with mr.

Dunn today he's looking to get capital in line and ready to go for the November board of selectmen and Board of Finance meetings so one of the things he encouraged was the an opportunity if the board can take advantage of knowing this early that the town would like to have this approved early before we get into actual operational budget if this could be approved at the November 6th meeting it doesn't have to be but if it could be and gives people a little bit more time to look at this and ask any questions or anything like that when is their meeting I believe it's after November 6 the next week I think that is that sign right second Tuesday or second Monday I think it's after our next board meeting just for people so they know the election is on the 5th of November and the board meetings on the 6th and I believe the following week are the selectmen and Finance means it surprises me that the Select was usually the first Monday so ok so then when it's Finance then I want to make sure that it's probably the following so then I think it's for fun maybe it's just for finance he wants at least get it in front of them maybe so we're trying to do again it's not a rush but it's just he's trying to stick to a timeline to keep the capital separ from the operational discussions ken mentioned we just have that placeholder in for item four for the boys locker room so I believe she will have an estimate before then yes okay okay okay so won't be in time for the selectra meeting but for the finance hang it would that's it'll work and we can even update that when we have that number yes you send out a message to all of the members when we have that number that would make it easier I think it's a question with the priority ratings these are prioritized per school are you going to do a total district prioritization as well yes I mean we did that last we can do that we did that last year do you recall what the you know the Lord fights to finance did a big model you know with a new school coming what the next ten years autumn look like capital was one portion of that do you recall what they had in for school capital in that ten-year plan per year I do not could you find out sure we certainly can because I think this I'm it's a lot of money I mean when you have kind of add up its two point something no in a year for the next two years and then it goes up to three point eight five point nine four point eight they're big numbers of capital and and there's needs like I'm looking down less than real needs so it's not a surprise to me but I think we ought to be cognizant of what was in their model because that's our Patriots on the Board of Finance are gonna have to think about this so sure I agree with you Bob on that subject but I'd also like to just kind of throw fashion out there that these are repairs that if we keep you know pushing everything down the road we're gonna be in the same place as we are with Center and Huckleberry's so as the board goes on with with the capital plan these are things that would like to have there are things that need to be done for the long-term health of our buildings with you on that but yeah you're always better staying on top of repairs absolutely I'm looking at these and there's not that many nice to haves that are all they're all repair and replaced so types of things so no the way we the Facilities Committee does business is very different than it did in advance really cognizant of how we spend the money and its long-term thinking all the time understand but we need to therefore understand what the Board of Finance is looking at and their middle term plan so that's why I agree with you on that I'm just and is the this outdoor restroom food service and storage is the single biggest item and the plan that hundred and ten is just for design work is I wrecked and the rest is a placeholder correct okay I am will suggest waiting to vote on this until next meeting until we have that figure placeholder and a little bit more time for everyone to look at it if everyone is okay with that agreed I think that's a great idea you know I think we'll it will we'd also feel better to have a firm number okay so if anyone has any questions prior to the next feeding if they can shoot a message either to the facilities can be so we can at least get some answers prior to the next meeting if I make the discussion I'll be great unless anyone else has any questions at this moment okay so then we move on to Oh business and the musical building project which the first thing we can do is the is the Malone report which received via email probably we can have though as well I think the majority bits is for the final figures and and they're pretty close to what they talked about in August based on you know with our new October ones um I felt really the the most impactful discussion would be how does this impact the art design phase right now of the new school you know a hundred plus mark students very likely going be in that school than what we originally planned for we're looking at more of a from eleven you know eleven I think Oh 1146 to somewhere around twelve hundred thirty or something like that you know so the significant difference and so I asked Jeff to come he talked about some of the conversation that's been going on about how this impacts the neighborhoods regular classrooms we plan for eight classrooms and neighborhoods how does that impact we just talked about Center School needing possibly meeting ten kindergarten sections next year so there's implication here for sure [Music] actually I can't because they so demographic so that to see if there's gonna be more turnover and what would be considered starter homes and so I asked that question after you did two or three times to them and and their answer is that they don't are not confident in any they don't have any reliable data to base their projections on that and that kind of information so they didn't feel comfortable with any kind of numbers or any kind of data that was out there relative to this I asked him could they talk to realtors could they could they do this and you know could they do a variety different things and they and they declined to do that because they didn't feel like those numbers were we're going to be accurate enough I know that probably doesn't make you happy but that was their answer and what what we've seen in this and we've already prepared hearing this I guess probably a month and a half two months ago when it first came up there is some confidence in the numbers in that there was a was a pop and they had projected a number and we waited till October first to see if it married up and it was within one I understand it didn't make me happy that we needed to go you know find some other flexible room in the building in a new building to accommodate this but as of right now we made adjustments to the building configuration to accommodate ten classes per grade level and quite frankly just from a state perspective they allow us to walk out eight years presuming that the projection is accurate the highest number which is pretty much spot-on it's 12:30 plus the fifty-two in pre-k so total number from 11 46 which was the original grant application to 1280 2 so it's a delta of 136 students so we're confident with this data the 10 classrooms for grade level will accommodate that and still maintain your students per class and maybe even some instances provide some more flexibility in some of those neighborhoods that we spoke to way back early on during the master plan so I'm sorry I can't give you a more direct answer is Australian sites a little school yeah it's it's frustrating for me as well but if they're not confident in that data then we gotta go with what's you know the experts and we respond to it I could stop there on the demographics and wait for ya school up does anyone else have any questions in regards to discussions in regards to the demographic study so we will be reporting the new number to the state yes so what what we like to do is now that the OPM is on board or at least been selected the owners project manager they are typically the primary face we've had communications with the state as well but we want them included in that typically you revise everything all at once because there's a there's a form I forget that a number of us - are and you kind of wait further on into the project and revise everything so if you changed a portion of the ED spec which you know the numbers are a piece of this you change that but if you also want to change something else in the site if it you know you added two different fields instead of three you change all of it all at once and then submit it as a revised package so I think the OPM will be you know their recommendation will be consistent with our so we are gonna collect all these we're designing to them and we'll keep it all organized so that we submit it and an organized fashion at once so not to confuse anybody with the state so the interesting thing is that the state allows us to eight years out which puts us at twelve eighty two which is a hundred and thirty six more students than what we had originally projected however if you look at the ten-year projections even the following year after that we reaching students yes so even though we're looking at twelve eighty two perhaps the number we need to be looking at is thirteen so in our round numbers we were we can't say that we you know and pay on paper say that we're looking at that but if you do the math on the ten four it gets you in that range so I saw that too because you can only go out eight but you know you got a reality is that does come true yet not pay for it so I think with what we're designing and refining I think it'll take care of that piece we just can't put it on and Malone is still confident in giving us the medium projection as far as spacing our school on versus the low and the high I press them a couple of times on that and they've done I know you don't want to hear that they've done a lot of different communities in Connecticut and we're working in another similar community where there's I'd say multi-unit housing some densified housing and there's a in in their particular instance the older demographics in town are moving into the apartments and then allowing the families to move into the starter homes in some in one development and then the other you're seeing families move in to the apartments so I guess it's a longer than answer as to I understand that their job is difficult to predict the future they they're using similar numbers and they've been tracking okay they've been working with this community for a few more years than that we've been working with them so I know it doesn't give you the the best amount you know the confidence that we can do I think we've accommodated in the design with adding the getting the ten classrooms in there there's all their flexibility when it comes to the core spaces that we've been looking really hard at that I can kind of go over as well and then keep in mind and this came up at the meeting last night with the MBC we're also asked to make sure that at the ends of these neighborhoods there's preparations so that if you do need to add you know another classroom or another two or four you you could do it easily you know at a certain point you can only add so much but to add another two or four at the end and those that were involved in the study remember that so we'll carry that key element through as well it's a little bit of belts and suspenders but I think it's appropriate considering kind of the history that you've gone through here so I'm just gonna make a comment to to the administration I know there's not a lot of people who do this work I think you need if if in fact we're seeing a continuing increase in enrollment and we don't have a good explanation of why we need to go bid this with this sort of knowledge base is a requirement right how do you do you know we need a firm who has experience with you know how do you how do you model a changing population because obviously this group who does the basic moment I'm ninety degrees in computer modeling so I'm sensitive to you know what knowledge you have and what facts you have often it's what have you studied right and so if we if they haven't studied this sort of phenomena and have a good base it's not helping right so we ought to make that a criteria in the bidding process of you know people bring you forth how would they go about dealing changing demographics like this I can't throw them under the bus because they have to model with what they have and but it's obviously not something they've studied in great depth right there study more about birth rates on their studying about return you know the whole retention analysis and stuff like that that's a pretty straightforward modeling this is a this is a phenomena of an aging population that's turning over right at the same time you know multifamily housing coming in so you've said it perfectly and it could go any different way right but you need some knowledge paestum all right so I think that ought to be a criteria that we think about next time we did something else okay thank you any other questions and I'm hoping they're watching because they better build up the knowledge because I think it's happening just as an aside I think that's happening for out Connecticut I mean I think this is a phenomena in the Northeast that has to be dealt with so what this segues into is exactly what they talked about and we originally planned for eight classes for original building and that's just not so what Tecton has done with the further refinement of the building has put ten classrooms which which adds to the cost of the project but and I will let Jeff detail into this and you will hear more about it next week with with the the next public engagement forum and actually I just had heard about it last night was the wetlands survey came back and were able to pool the school further up then initially they thought and because of that the school doesn't have to be built into the hillside as much so and again purely conceptual at this time as it all is until we get from the semantic design to design development but what tectonics proposing now is after you can speak into this if you want or we can you know we'll be seeing this next week as well but I just wanted to kind of give you an update with that is instead of going with three stacked layers up against the hill they can just have a two two level school that's further up as if you do that it's much more cost-efficient there's less there's more predictability in the construction and that's gonna enable us to have the two classrooms for a great neighborhood it will be some difference in the design as well Jeff do you want to have anything to them sorry if I just yeah I can just shed a little bit light on it so you know the first few steps are actually having a survey crew go out and survey flag wetlands and then start studying what's out on the site and for those that remember the maps that we had shown originally in the in the conceptual plan is we showed a kind of a large kind of swath a light blue kind of shade kind of over what I guess at one point 56 years ago it was wetlands which is now a culvert it's buried underneath at the back where you where the bus is parked there's a field so there's grass and then there's the ball field right in there there's a pipe that collects so what actually happened is the civil engineers studied the capacity at that pipe and found that with some modest modifications that will accommodate a 500-year flood so what what we were showing in that light blue was the 500 year setback so that setback essentially goes away we're where that is channelized already so it's kind of a benefit of what was accomplished years back you do have to file an application with FEMA get the floodplain map revised but they are fairly confident that's a very little boat risk all the calculations prove it so what you'll see we brought some stuff we can leave after or you'll see it at the public forum is we're studying art our job in schematic design is to study it so the options I know we showed kind of a blocking diagram during master planning and then we showed a couple you know some evolution of that with some swooping curves and separating the building engaging the hillside those are all good they have benefits and challenges of each we think the opportunity to pull the building slightly off of that hill into the flat area which is that elevation basically 400 so it's mostly flat there's a lot of things from energy consumption we can have more compact building it saves on site costs takes out a little bit unknowns if you don't you're not digging into a hillside that you don't know exactly what's what's in there just yet so it's just it's an opportunity to study what what opportunities that creates so that coupled with the fact that we know our budget we know what we have and we know what we need as far as the extra classrooms we have to be is not ultra efficient but we have to be very smart about the way that we plan the building so what what we've been up to over the last few months now is many many programming meetings talking about the needs adjacencies digging a or we have the inspect that's a good tool to use as a guide book but really understand what needs to be next to what how they work how do we want to work in the future built in flexibility so long story short is that's kind of the big effort that's been underway over the last two months and design in this spaces is in evolution it's it's going to evolve not every ideas gonna be a good one so the point of the public forum at the next public forum is to continue to get feedback we're changing the format a little bit so that we can engage a little bit I thought the the dialogue after the breakout sessions were really productive and I think we're trying to capture some of that essence more publicly so that we can let everybody know we're listening and adapting in my the plans so all good stuff I think you know as we continue on with traffic we're going to do other things that we'll learn as we learn more both on programming and Blauman and on site it's all gonna keep on shaping the building a little differently so that's what somatic design is all about that process goes through to about the end of November and that kind of locks in okay this is really what its gonna look like and then the next face is really starting heads down you're talking about what's in each space like carpet the clocks everything we've got to kind of design everything in every space and take one space at a time and sit and go over them that's the next phase this phase is about studying options what's ok so don't feel like you know if there's something to do it's probably because we just thought of it you know sometimes if you think of it that morning or you know it so it's it's evolving and the way to promote conversation about what's best for the community is to give you a couple options and I never thought about this or this one what I like better so that's we're doing exactly what we need to do at this face so just wanted to write some level of comfort pretty excited about the next public forum because I think hopefully not that the first one wasn't engaging I thought it was great dialogue but I think this next level will show some other options and really get everybody's feedback and then kind of settle down on what's what we think is best and try to fit all of that for the next the next month or so so that's I just wanted to be sure that all the key components like neighborhoods the to schools the sharing of the core of the community core the separation the expansion all the things that were keys are going to be that thread that ties everything together so so they'll be there they may not all shake out in every option but at the end of the day they're gonna be there so that's kind of our updates so you said you had some stuff for us to look at after yeah it's a format that I think might be a little bit better after anyway it's the same sort of stuff we'll look at next week oh yeah okay cool okay thank you thanks Jess so with that another reminder Tuesday 7 o'clock it's Tuesday October 22nd 7 o'clock again in Cocoa Gary so we'll have the presentation if yes it will be 7 o'clock there's some school message out this afternoon yes and we decided that all of them will be at 7 o'clock it's just a better time work from sporting events from obligations to make it there it will be a huckleberry again it will be again a joint meeting with the NBC and the Board of Ed we'll start with a presentation with Jack down and ask Geoff had mentioned what we thought was exceptional with the last one was when the breakouts after the meeting ended ended where people can go with their just look at the diagrams and talk and discuss so we wanted to try to capture that more and then after those discussions of talking questions we can meet back together in the full group and then just kind of share with the entire group whatever so if someone doesn't want me to talk and speak at the at the microphone they know that their questions have been hard to answer how many I think it's gonna be informal we did last time where everyone just kind of built around and asked questions and he found people that and went from there and just gathered all the information I have on the center school I had hoc committee that might so yeah so that's apologized I won't be there but I'm gonna be looking at repurposing center school which is which is an important any other questions ok me brings us to three main points that's the first main point like next forums Tuesday and maybe some updates on what we learned tonight yeah absolutely do you want to do the enrollment um study is why three main things of this world with that yeah okay so now we have an executive session oh I'm sorry everyone over at Center elementary school the full social is on Thursday October 24th from 5:30 to 7:30 there's an early dismissal on Monday October 28th the NBC we're going the new school project is on Tuesday October 22nd at 7 o'clock the huckleberry other Jim and there's a flu clinic on Wednesday October 23rd from 5 to 8 and there was skinny our cafeteria that's it I also did want to mention to the board and also just to the public that prior to our next board meeting on the 6:00 at 6 o'clock there's a budget roundtable so invite the you know inviting all of the budget or all of the public at least that's what it is on the the budget calendar size zoom it's on there 6 o'clock yes it's November 6 budget roundtable for the regular boredom and meeting it's on our budget calendar so so just to remind you maybe we can have something go out perhaps after the public engagement or we did that I'll go away and then we can remind people so that's going to be at 6 o'clock directly before our next Courtney another thing yes yes okay um now we have executive session recommend a motion that the board enter into executive session for the purpose of discussing the superintendent's goals second discussion all in favor aye host okay this concludes the public portion of our meeting thank you everyone have a great evening [Music]

V echo AMA good morning today's good citizenship topic is being self disciplined to be self-disciplined means that you have control over yourself you have the willpower to do what is good for yourself now and in the future people who are self disciplined don't get into trouble they think no when someone asks them to do something that is really not good for them they are mature and courageous they don't have to be corrected in school or other places because they control themselves and have the self-discipline to do what is expected self disciplined people are happy because they do what is right they get their work done that time in our need and organize they are in control of what they do they think for themselves and do what is truly good not what might just feel good or what undisciplined people tell them to do students who are self disciplined don't interrupt others and they were quietly and efficient if each day you try to become a little more self-discipline then you will be happy successful and respected by others thank you thank you and now we will observe a brief period of silence to reflect on the anticipated activities of the day please stand for the pledge my pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands one nation under God indivisible with liberty and justice for all hi mrs.

any discussion all those in favor I post staying motion carries miss Thompson do we want to what's the main we have second seconded by mr. Brennan do we have any discussion hearing none all those in favor opposed staying motion carries at the end we will do an executive session we are going to do the recognition yes Rob you recognition Thomas come on come on up all right so good evening everyone my name is Darryl Issa I'm a school counselor walking to school and I have the pleasure and the pleasure to tell you guys that on October 8th we had our first and hopefully our annual public ceremony and this was an opportunity for us to give out 13 funnel books to students that need that did not have on computer access a balloon so that would be this up is pretty awesome also these losers were just handed out Chromebooks they went through a rigorous interview process they had to answer questions like how can they use Chromebook to help them academically benefit them they also gave us insight to how they were able to accomplish their schoolwork before having fun and students gave us information about having walk blocks on in to go to the library's independent work also having to do their homework and projects on our cell phones as challenging as that sounds so on one hand I see the perseverance of resiliency of the students that we have run in the Denver Public School and I also see a need that must be met and I'm happy that we met that need for the Chromebooks Tara movie I'm going to acknowledge people that help this event happen dr.

Kurata to have any discussion discussion just a couple of things in immediate it's probably due to a lack of the usage so I don't know what one of the best ways to do this so first in that or meeting minutes our last meeting on October 10 after our student representatives spoke Emmanuel American graduated in student representatives she said she meant to be 8,000 graduated in 2001 especially you know there was the og with officers that is incorrect we said she ran for the gyoji and ones who participate on that war so next first the second is under the TA update that kind of often is for without the third sentence in kind of member of ask ask me advice with nothing on go grant it was the higher order thinking ranchers just specifies ended a little longer down at the TDI updated there's a school 25% of warning balance would be prank requires to come up with evidence I feel like there's something missing there there was evidence in open application process it says if there's a school 25% or more in diamonds we will be required to come up with evidence evidence that we have in open lottery system so if we haven't had a school is racial imbalance [Music] distain zone to require us to provide evidence in this case and so we would have to provide evidence to the state that were in elementary school so specifically in states like Harry or West [Music] versus the lottery requires nothing I just [Music] again talking about the lottery of this falls under the discussion of the opioid town forum where it said earlier discussion stood up lottery in general I would like the minister reflect they asked the question if there are any other schools schools that use an opt-out system and the answer was no at that time it is so nice the last paragraph there you will put something together to look at it or not and then the Paris justice engine that just doesn't make sense here down to seven years and if we do nothing it on the Danbury building are like funding to play some correction there and then under discussion of the October 1 2019 and vulnerable Court all of my updates that fall that fell onto that should have been listed under warrant words so few of notes and you want to get those features for clarity states having to make so another another good reason for manual our our microphone police officer make sure that we are all because it is thank you so much any other just one issue multi consoles they don't have that hardwired press the lock button instead of the top line alright we got your school education program oh we did not vote on the consent calendar we got discussed I'm sorry one second you can come on up um so we have all of our discussion completed motion in a second all those favor that's the consent calendar with minutes that are going to be amended anybody opposed staying motion carries thank you please prep plate representing spotlighting school Adult Ed program good evening we're getting our silicon we really appreciate this opportunity month name is Terrence Terrence I am on the regional director with all the patients to follow I'm a visual graphical illustration and I'm very very happy and proud I've been here for six years over the last six years we've had the wonderful opportunity to enhance the lives of hundreds of families here in the Bay Area community not just meeting my staff as we see Aboriginal supported that we're all here today to honor thought there will be two and share with you a lot about our programs and services so we're gonna get started [Music] we race is a program that offers free mandated programs for students 17 years in older we have a month of staff dedicated teachers to CalPERS and employees that really ensure that our students are getting the best possible opportunity to be successful in life and we help them to transition themselves not just submitting a high school diploma or a GED but to be prepared for that next stage device pulsating their programming that ensured our students not walk right out of our doors Jessica : but a plan of action for their lives moving forward our mission is to promote learning as a lifelong process is strive to provide learners with the necessary tools to be successful citizens workers families members and parents and space growth on the left hand side you see people editions that are part of our cooperative those districts as part of our our consortium that makes up our reading program on the right hand side you see our funding source those two operating districts paid into our program for two our services we also get funding from data about the school work and the state funding matches at 20% of the local but meaning that citizens whatever some additional pieces are programs that are provided by the legislation we have our credit at home program which is basically our high schools mr.

program students works were seeing their diploma by receiving high school credit and once they receive the credit they need long history at home from an education GED educational diploma is basically the program where students are prepared by taking coursework to pass that assessment or assessment which covers reading writing science math and social studies Adult Basic Education is our program that it's basically helped her medical students who are not ready to go on to our katha diploma martini for them most students are lacking and numeracy and literacy so we can all throw their skills are able to participate before the programs our ESL program basically for our students who come to us or foreign-born we're trying to learn English we're trying to enhance their English activation s our citizenship program is provided for gain access for students who at times because to the United States we provide that health care for that assessment Pierre et cetera 2018-19 sweetie we had seven Indian students and you see they have a wide variety of age ranges our largest age group is 25 three percent and see a breakdown the number of students that have a program again focusing that ESL number as on large population next my own containers to see you all soon oh hi we have a program manager sitting to my right which is my right hand my right arm Xena we have a multitude of counselors our counselor dollar bottles at work right now we have a strategy or a accounts trading also absolute American representative on she's like counselor for multiple programs we have our ESL coordinator Cecilia be a sec record or are they wrong to be a evening supervisor that is not a lesson that we have an administrative assistant Stella Marcus who's not here with us multi-tool along for teachers and staff it helps to our students an extra travel case is replicated at ten products to DES on the initiative office the secret of no other locations throughout the city we have a career senator five times u plus person graduate churches where we provide be self in classes Danbury high school is where we provide almost all remedial classes to see there's a multitude of other program that provided a self-access lovesick that's a picture of our students are out there next I'm going to turn the mic over to joining in a number of our staff hello so our federally Community Grants starting with our we are fortunate that we have four grants that are programmed program enhancement projects are called EPS and those are funded federal funding that are provided to us through that state department education those include our transitions our workforce readiness our Family Literacy and our integrated English language and community engagement which you will have a briefer service by the LCD because especially to say that and we're able to supplement our programming with that funding from the from the Connecticut State Department that also for federal funding that are out of school you the program which again is federal dollars but that is not through the state that is for our partnership with the Northwest Regional Airport Authority so our we're gonna start the workforce readiness grant so basically the workforce grant allows us to provide enhanced courses it enhanced courses focus on preparing students for the workplace so basically what you see is a picture of the Department of Labor sixteen career pathway posters which I know hard to see but this allows us and of our students explore additional coursework and exploring career pathways for a potential career we're able to enhance our curriculum by adding classes such as writing for the workplace math community factoring and creating career success which should at least students don't cut an opportunity to have that our mandated money is only for our coursework so this really allows us to step outside the box and provide some great services to the students it also allows us to bring in guest speakers which provide real life connections and potentially some field trips to manufacturing industry so that they can really see what the media actually flora looks like if that's something they're thinking about exploring and lastly it provides for funding for MBA internships and judged trial opportunities which is something ever putting together right now so just a touch apply our transitions program it's entirely student-centered so from the data Student Center great creating individualized student success plan and determined career interest profiles for them throughout the semester will host presenters to immerse them in their lives after we race different presenters include computer programming Ally health really tried to gear towards the industry demands our traditional plan wraps around is just super graduation where we've been individually assist each student with their college and career endeavors we don't just end our relationship with them at that we have an open-door policy with our v-ray salons come to us persistent we also host event like our on-site something to say that we have every semester with Naugatuck Valley Community College Nanak Sai Valley will come to us and this really eliminates any excuses for why they wouldn't apply and get the ball rolling for going to post-secondary we also have a report that I bought in 2019 our number of students that have successfully enrolled in Mountain Valley went to 108 80 percent from last year so I only expect that that will expand moving forward we really have such a comprehensive program and you know we're off to great things and lastly we've implemented fried worms for successful transition so this is weevils variety of topics including employability skills mock interviews resume building mental health so that penetrates everything [Music] so I'm also seeking kept coordinators so I'm the out-of-school youth coordinator our division is called the average cancer and Riaan career achievement program it's entirely funded by the northwest regional Workforce Investment Board so we offer hands-on vocational training to eligible a school youth between the ages of 17 and 24 so that means that every year a student between the ages of 17 that work is inevitable actually through this program were able to offer paint student tuitions five books Gaspard bus passes and even opportunity for several subjects which actually really eliminates most barriers that college students struggle with my role is transition counselor working symbiotically with my role as a top coordinator because I'm able to really that conduct the time of students and I I would be a great fit for the program and I see you know we have a six percent student enrollment from here ace now so I will see that we were increasing and just able to really identify who's ready because it is a commitment there is a lot of time but it's it's a wonderful program I don't think it's all going in your career and become all entire businesses to support parents to become occurrences in children's education teach me attractive parenting strategies and promoting communication and leadership skills next generation we do this in partnership with they will pay and the Family Resource Center Pro will collaborate with them they were many childcare provider they are a LTE is a program that we offer to the advance student ESL in include Saline engagement how to find a Material Girl how to make creative use of the community resources and new this year you can incorporate some few tips today communica steakhouse in inside and will provide training programs at TDI Co where students in national recognized potential customer service or because of course we have teleport graduated from the program and doubled in already working in customer service to our federal grants we are fortunate to have so very community partnerships people to ask in writing and expand what we offer first is our pilot or office of early childhood so we are partnership with a combination of August early childhood and UConn and we are going to pour out of over 60 adult education programs in the state that were selected for this pilot so this private is providing childcare for students that are enrolled in our high school completion programs you see the beautiful faces of some of the kids that are currently in our program having fun with beads and sensor equally cool but actually so we are very fortunate that we partnered with Marsha Turing and Erica keen at the data high school who have opened up their classroom to us and empowerment pre-k rose last year due to just in work and contracts and got knees off the ground late so we were only able to successfully support for parents but three of those were graduated and they do that without this childcare since we had more time to recruit this year we have have 12 parents in this program up to 16 children and we're going to go back for our semester that starts in January so it's really an amazing program and our next new partnership is the civic engagement partnership with the American new American Community Foundation we were very sweet generously funded with over 11,000 dollars through the partnership with the Romy God family Charitable Foundation and any corporation and with this funding there are evils of partner to provide for citizenship and citizenship resources throughout the city and we are currently planning on continuing and expanding our partnership mediator a library right now we can only offer to this mission classes everyone is heard here and it's a four month class that goes on Saturdays and that's all that happens so students have to wait a full year and shifts worker services this funding will allow us to carry out full year per any plans to partner with families net and potentially the dlci program so that we can really have a sustainable citizenship that's always going on well you've heard it takes about a child these are all of our partners that we have loved and refuges well so welcome to sex for us so students welcome our students is expanding opportunities for unpaid internship top child's and community service as well as established a new mentor program and working with more community partners in our co-op districts to include increased recruitment so anyone who is really interested in helping us with an internship child or community service opportunities we know colossal park so feel free to let us know regardless tab enhance those program and continuing education lags to create program for students to come to us to endorse attract the Trinity for us things like Microsoft Word and the last part of what comes next to uh community which is a pretty powerful so the double education as you can see from the staff on that screen it's an indicator program because of this data and process state the city of Daniel Airy as well the staff serve be able to the need for adult education is a real it's a growing need it's a reality in Connecticut almost 12% not Homa 10% people in America do not over 120,000 people in the state of Connecticut do not speak English well and here in the anime are just over a 7705 20% of our residents do not speak English or speak English well and that's a crime to bring awareness to education and the services that are provided so last month the adult education program took it upon themselves to organize the first March her go excuses March for education was held on September 26 it was a March set originated at the end we have an adult education program and it was a 2 mile march to the New Haven Green and at the green there was a rally and as a as well as a community resource fair so the adult education partners at across the state I've already decided that this is going to be a annual event and the next event next September somewhere around the 26 all attached to date is going to be hosted in the Northwest region the Northwest region the partners including the America stepped up to organize the postback and it's going to be a six ago education programs in the Northwest region as well as a partnership with the Northwest Regional work for artwork and there are plans to do Oita last year but also expand a math course of college and career resource fair as well as the potential there so it's going to be a huge event it's going to take a lot of time to planning and you will join us at that time most likely if any water bury the water is central to the whole question but it's hard to get to well it's part of hurry way to get to so and and transportation so I'm at no transportation is one of the barriers for our students so we've got to find a way to eliminate those barriers for our students and ourselves so water here is a central location in the Northwest region includes all of the department and the shield area as well as water Gary Naga top Cheshire New Milford and Dean Gary so the other reason why it's most likely going to be healthy water Mary is it's crucial to start demanding now and it's crucial that have the support of the city and the coming election it's difficult the plan was going to be will be improved and not approved for next year so water mary has already committed some resources that we can already start working off of but that doesn't either can't or need to get very necessary how many students do you serve in our entire way how we have become shoes what if you see one it was three miles of the hottest alone we asked our to rush around to the contact we are definitely a little some testimony of our students and if you read through those you see how you touch your heart at this we're a lot a lot of times we're a class hopefully students and I think that a lot of these students are saying here is just a my problem policy affect their lives the most empowering of those that this program means that they are sold and that's what we're trying to instill in all of our student assistant for a lot of timely articles their last hope getting opportunity to know we have some students s sitting right here behind you want to stand up do something for someone else to some of our so that's the end of our presentation we are so again very proud of what we're doing in adult education we are affecting the lives of so many communities and so many students to so many families and we will continue to do this over the course of our time here and we need your support everybody come out tomorrow our offices of the number of board members a lot of you have been to our graduations we would appreciate it so we want to share the review so please take it upon yourself to give us a call come out and see our programs you [Applause] will see how well you are paying attention we have OCU at least our purpose really expand the program at one time to belong to edit pants it wasn't our program school for that office they asked we have God says graduation we've tried to do it wrong with the and once they matriculate that successfully we don't think it's right so we've been trying to work the competition see if we can do the scene X's that we have universities absolutely kind of credit there so since gonna be doubled and roll lieutenant wasn't working there are a lot of reasons [Music] representative [Music] - exactly - because part of the leadership at predicting participating in his harsh words talk with utter another program or disability community for resentencing hazards of the environmental scientists plan travel to the Gophers on all this river is a part of the story progression of [Music] the Board of Education accepted September 2019 and operating results analysis showing on Ogden grants importance of 1935 seconded by mr.
