Hoopoe the replacements they have all been under $50,000 is that correct or yes so this this wouldn't have impact problems we're having for that particular art piece the way we have yeah so it's per occurrence and an occurrence so you know to use a natural disaster or something it's vandalism and they break one of them probably not going to reach $50,000 if I did five figures okay so it's kind of a big price tag but that's also part of the insurance and the risk fund is something else you know that's I was just gonna ask how many pieces that we actually have that are valued or have a fifty thousand dollar amount I mean we have an inventory we have a list I take it that has been now I identified and yeah maybe I don't have the list with me I'd have to go back and look I believe there's probably there's one or two they're probably in the hundreds of thousands of dollars and then part of the issue is I don't think it's like a value on the canoes the canoe what do you call it I don't know what the efficient what's that the canoe fan thank you yes the canoe fan we paid less than fifty thousand exactly so I don't know where that falls and there's some things that we don't we haven't really assigned a value to yet and I think you alluded to this earlier some some value you know is assessed to a particular item because of who created it it's perception right and then there's there's insurance and how they value things right and so one of the things the insurance company has mentioned previously through my talks with Highland it's so it's the reasonable necessary cost repairing replace and then there's the appraised value which will be determined at the time of loss so something you could consider I suppose is trying to do an appraisal a value appraisal of more of the art pieces so you would assign a value to them because I can tell you that I know off the top of my head there's probably half a dozen or more that don't have values listed to them in that document or in that spreadsheet but the insurance company didn't have any they probably looked at it and said canoe fan it's probably under fifty thousand dollars or something I don't I'm not sure they didn't there were so many big things moving with the insurance yeah market that this you know this was a very nice benefit that we got just by moving to zerk so I'm happy with that and I'm happy that we you know we've taken the first step of putting the list together I think that let's just you know it still needs some work yeah and our focus would be on any pieces that would more than right so I think you definitely want to do appraisals with anything that you you feel is over fifty thousand dollars if we don't already have the original paperwork that says you know I think this you know the sculpture out here outside of City Hall I forget what's inside I never go through security at the courthouse I think that that's a pretty significant right and so those things are you know if we had you know if we had an actual disaster those are the types of things that we would be looking to ensure or get some value from our insurance company and so the price that we actually paid to purchase the work would would work as the number even though it's a good starting point you know I think you you know if we could assign values to start with and then you probably want to agree on a you know we try to do property we haven't done a full citywide property appraisal since well actually was probably twenty seventeen so there's only about three years ago but I still go through that list I go through online the the the property indexes of what various buildings value increases so I always increase those numbers so that there's a total insured value that should be reasonable with the municipal Center and order justice center in this building to increase them in value so that our total insured value with the insurance companies is is accurate but probably every ten to fifteen years we should go through and actually have a company appraised I don't know what you you know I'm not sure what the recommendation would be for public art but it's something we should at least do once to say here's our our baseline yeah great you also have questions thank you very much all right next we have approval of minutes [Music] all right all in favor say pose great minutes approved next we have report from chair I have a very short report I wanted to bring everyone's attention to the artwork in the back of the room we have some artwork from Ruth crow who is a local artist she actually is a neighbor old West Side yeah she does really awesome encaustic work it's worth coming down and seeing she will also have a piece up in actually she'll have two pieces up and the upcoming opening at the guild of artists and artisans which I have to plug our opening coming up next week it's Friday from 6 to 9 is our opening and and at our offices which are at 118 at North 4th Avenue which mean here on and Anne and Sophie also has a piece of that as well and it's gonna be a great show so hopefully you can come out and see us at our inaugural exhibition that's all I had to report for today now we're gonna move on to new business the primary function we had to do after our last meeting was put together as a report of our goals and what we're gonna be doing this upcoming year of our meeting and Deb and I met and put that together and that's included in your packet hopefully you've all had some time to look it over and review it and see that it reflects our conversation and what your working groups will be looking at doing the bullets should sort of encapsulate what you were planning on doing in each of these working groups and obviously it lists all of the people involved in those working groups as well as who will be chairing that working group please let us know if missed anything if anyone wants to be added to a working group we can still do that as well so this is the time to dive into this make sure this is right before it goes to City Council did anyone there name left off of a group or and also just to reiterate this is part of our required reporting every year to City Council and it does need to go forward for their consent agenda I believe approval so that agenda part of this is also we're including the CIP report which has not changed much there's as David let us know there are not very many projects that are workable for public art this go-around most of the projects are maintenance or evaluations research studies and things like that so they don't so there's no new projects that we're proposing through the CIP at this point it's all stuff we've already talked about but we do have an updated report that could be included with the goals piece just regarding the the youth outreach working group I don't know if it's absolutely necessary to modify our add it but the I voted sticker contest is something that we'll be trying to help spread the word about so if that is something that might be beneficial just to let council know that we'll be assisting with kind of spreading the word on we will move it wherever you think it is best as long as it gets mentioned should be a good good time had by all yeah this year you know City Clerk's office is handling that so I'm not sure if anyone yeah they came and presented here as well okay the youth outreach group is working with on it okay helping collaborate and I just wanted to add as a teacher in the district on Monday I received an email yes maybe you've seen all the printed material it's great so yeah I went out to all the teachers grades K to 12 and I think it's really concise and and really well done I don't know if it was involved in the creation of it but it's simple it's easy and I think they're gonna you're gonna break participation I did my plug one point I noticed in the I guess this is the draft report that we are now going to accept is that in that it says that a newly proposed policy and governance workgroup which I support so is that a part of the vote here is to create that new workgroup with those members in it yes well I just appreciate the work put into this you know I know it's it's somewhat arduous and you know appreciate that the time it you took and members of the body to put into this it is like you said required by the bylaws and the ordinance and City Charter so appreciate it it doesn't get as much play at City Council as the time it takes to do it but you know that's not necessarily a bad thing okay sounds good well you know debate other issues and and let you do your work I do have one other thing I mean we certainly could to John's point we certainly could pull off the policy Ronan's workgroup as a separate item if we wanted if what's here is amenable in terms of the proposed committee membership etc or if somebody wants to be added to that membership I would I would encourage that we could pull it off but if it looks alright that's the way it is for right now for the purposes of moving forward then voting to accept the report will be sufficient I do not have concerns with the working group what I would like to though say and this might be better for later but in reviewing the CIP documents there were a couple of questions that I found that I had and then I started thinking about the fact we've added new members and the CIP process and documents might be new or need some additional conversation so I'm wondering if we could schedule at a next meeting or something to have david esau perhaps walk us through it walk us through the process because I think that might be helpful for our new members and actually I know it will be helpful to me because I had questions about the documents when I when I received them mr.

Hugh P can you add to this conversation at all CIP I know you know Planning Commission has approved something recently you know taking things off the list that that were on the list so it'd be a good refresher for everybody including myself to be honest with you to be reminded it's a revolving list but I don't know if you can enlighten us in any way well these capital improvements plan the CIP is a state mandated document we prepare our CIP on a every other year cycle we every other year we open up the full plan and look at all the projects that are in the plan all the projects that are proposed and go through a rigorous ranking in ordering project to come up with the plan in the off year which is the year where and now we're in an off year the plan is only minimally opened up to accept new projects that are have come forward that are in an immediate that would be occurring in the next year so it's we don't look out the full plan is a six-year plan so this year is what we call a refresh year or and we're only look really looking at this year's budget and also the CIP is all the city capital projects but they're not all competing against each other because there are multiple sources and funding within the city so depending on the funds for capital projects the projects may be competing within a smaller subset of all the projects within the city and then David Esau's group looks at those plans and identifies which projects would be ripe for consideration of art with them so you're looking at a much smaller subset of the whole plan and then the plan itself is started by staff we do public engagement for the plan and it goes to the Planning Commission as a plan the Planning Commission is the body by state law that approves the CIP the first year of the CIP the year one is what is transmitted to City Council as their capital budget proposed so for the next coming year and that's what city council has authority over as the first year of the capital plan so that's probably more than a nutshell so I guess that was when we have moved to accept motion yeah so I need a motion to accept the review of goals and project report second any further discussion we have no old business well the items listed there are no that's our report finita if you could pull your microphone a little closer yeah I don't know if anybody has any questions well I think that it's very exciting to have gotten the art into the city maintenance report this is another one of those steps that is important to be able to track the maintenance the inspections etc etc and so financial costs if there's anything you want to say about that but that's another one of these steps forward that we're taking and I just wanted to sort of call attention to that in you know at work in professionalizing our approaches to our very valuable public art holdings on behalf of the taxpayers and stakeholders in the city Green okay Olivia and I are really excited about this and and we are most certainly getting an awful lot of support from staff to help us move this through initially we go in to meetings and not quite sure what we're asking for or how we're gonna get there but we do have an idea of what we want so what we're planning I think in the next maybe mid-february or towards the end of February is an actual staff meeting with folks who will actually go in to city works look at the work orders and get some feedback from them on what they're looking at is this enough information for them when they're looking in city works they're actually pulling up a work order that doesn't give them a description of the piece but it gives the location and we also have inputted some of the general guidelines from the artists as far as maintaining it whether it's cleaning time special type of cleaning and we've also done some attachments for those that we've had attachments for so this meeting in the next few weeks or so getting the feedback from staff is important we wanted this to be really easy for staff to use not so cumbersome for them and as part of their regular routine and their regular maintenance so we're setting the date for April first hoping that between early spring and early summer that every piece at least has one go around from anyone have any questions about the items that are listed here yes ok so youth art month as you probably all know is a collaboration between the Ann Arbor Public Schools and the Main Street area Association and our reception will be March 8th at the out Center if anybody would like to speak I'm putting the program together now usually the mayor comes and superintendent Swift will speak on their that presentation will happen at 1:30 and then families come and you're encouraged to stroll downtown and we've got all the great art that's displayed in the windows so yeah it's been going on for a long time it's a great collaboration between the city and between the Main Street Association and the public schools this year we're doing something a little bit different I'm actually part of Sandra's team we are we have hired to U of M students who are going to be putting temporary art installations downtown and so it's real exciting I know you know a little bit about as we're still trying to find locations for them but so you'll they have a website and will be advertising that but yeah gonna be great the reception's 1-2-3 and sun 88 I wanted to ask that whether the students you've hired up putting the school students up were they creating something themselves setting quit so it's interesting last year we did this and we created one installation where we hired an artist and we had her we could only afford to have her go into the schools and work with one group of students so we felt that really wasn't enough she went to Skyline and worked with a graphic design class so this year we decided to do a little differently we hired two student artists one is in the School of Architecture the other is in stamps school of art and what we did is we had those artists come together with all the art teachers and they presented their projects and they taught us how to do a piece for their installation so now we're all making those pieces in our schools it's about every schools participating and then they're all going to be brought together and then the artist is going to create it so what we're looking for right now is places to install them temporarily so but they're all made out of recycled materials the idea is all the theme is thinking about the environment and all the waste that there is so one of them is a coffee cup curtain that has messages on it another when it's flowers made out of recycled materials and then when I'm working on is lanterns third grade students are making lanterns that are going to um so they so work for the coffee cups we're trying to find an inside spot for those the lanterns we are going to make them somewhat weatherproof but they're only expected to last through March or the environment takes its toll on it and then the flower mural we're trying to find an indoor location for two just a little last March is a horrid month to put out outside I might have a location for you for one of those I just wondered if you were able to share this evening the names of the students at U of M that will be working on this and if you're not able to this evening perhaps we could go through communications to get that out to the community because I think that these kinds of partnerships and this kind of Commission work for these students is something that we should recognize and put forward yes I'd be happy to I don't actually know their last names I know they're Beatrice and joy but what we thought was really important was that our students actually realize how artists work so they've each made their own video and explained it about themselves and they're very well done that might also be something that we could showcase yeah and I know they'd like that too any other question John regarding the report I'd be remiss if I did not reflect on the art commission when I started and the art commission now and although things like our inventory maintenance report and insurance just aren't very flashy it's extremely important the fact that this discussion that's happening as being reported in staff about public art there's a sea change from when I come on the Commission and frankly with all due respect mr.

Hoopoe it's due to one person and that's Vinita Harrison and my hats are often I think everyone recognizes that it's not easy work but it's important work and we saw it today that you know the insurance person is reporting so kudos Vanita and it is noticed thank you [Music] could I just highlight this last piece I'm here the City Council policy agenda committee was this just noting that the policy change that we put forward was was included in the packet moving forward all right I just wanted to let the Commission know that that has happened next we have reports from work groups each of the work groups are listed here in no particular order so it does anyone have a report they want to report about anything exciting going on you guys want to share I think part of a the main new activity or change for us is just we're sad to see Deb leave our group but I definitely want to welcome this Leonard Peggy into our group as well so we'll be looking at some more new and exciting things in 2020 with a some new blood and just using the the I voted sticker contest as a way to kind of involve existing projects that the city is already doing and then get get our Commission behind it a little bit more so just for anybody that's in our audience or watching at home or it doesn't know already oh so this would be on behalf of the youth outreach committee and so just regarding that that contest it goes through March 31st earlier Peggy mentioned some of the materials that just go over the guidelines for that and what I think is great about the way they did is there's three different categories so there's a citywide competition open to anybody who's a resident of Ann Arbor there's a kindergarten through sixth grade category and then there's a seventh grade through twelfth grade category so give us an opportunity for different representations of student work there and other people are not students but yeah looking forward to this year so thanks so much I saw one of the selfie stations downstairs I just wanted to say that it's my expectation that I will be contacting the members of the Leadership Forum to get a meeting together this month you know who you are I just wanted to report on the liaison position with the Design Review Board and I am adopting the principle that less is sometimes more so you can read the the report all is good I mean the point is is that the report coming from the Design Review Board going to the Planning Commission and developers are including public art more and it's not that they had any aversion to it it's just not being brought up so there was an opportunity to to do that and it's very exciting and there and and and it's voluntary advice and people were very receptive how much they include it we shall see but at least it's being done thank you thank you for continuing to be our voice at those meetings all right if there are any other reports from work groups I hope encourage you all to be meeting in the next couple of months and bringing forward some exciting work we've got a lot that we're planning on doing that is shown in our report that we just approved today so hopefully we'll see some of that action that we can report out at the next meeting it does there any other like public comments you guys want to share anything exciting going on in your life that you think is relevant to report out on I already plugged the guilt of partisan arsons Guttman gallery opening next week what day is that next week Friday 6:00 to 9:00 so I'd like to report on another exhibition which I'm going to be involved in so I don't know if you know the argos museum argos museum which is a very lovely building on west side of town on william and there are four photographers taking part in a show called pin-up women which is actually about laundry lines and so it's a photography show and the opening will be on 27th of february from 5:30 to eight there are now Spencer things to share alright then our meeting is adjourned you

go ahead and call this meeting to order um Angela Rasmussen here Christian schwag over here Lisa Staedtler here Robin is not here Kathleen summers Gil Nisha Turner Tolbert mark Howell here Kristin Marcum okay we do have a quorum of the board we don't have an oath yeah that is term expired so we'll deal with that part after so you just won't have voting power during this meeting okay okay thank you second okay is that better okay thank you sorry I always forget about this part so we have a motion and a second to approve the agenda all in favor aye opposed all right agenda is approved next up on the agenda is the approval of the minutes we have the HBA minutes from February 13th of 2018 which I believe was the last time we met I motion to approve the minutes from February 2018 all right I have a motion I second that all in favor okay minutes from February 13 2018 pass next up is the appeal action and show cause hearing we have the HPA 20 - 2 0 0 1 appeal for 2810 Elmwood Avenue could we have the staff report for that please yes we could my name is Mark Hall deputy building official representing the Housing Board of Appeals of the rental housing program good afternoon chair and board thank you for being here as just stated we are here for HB a 20 - 0 0 1 at 2810 Elmwood Avenue representing for the property owners are Jennifer bishop and Sarah Tanner a little background on the subject property house was built in the 1920s it appears to be original construction with one bedroom on the first floor and a finished loft space on the second floor the owner of the residence located at 20:10 Elmwood Avenue requests one variance variances second-floor loft space ceiling variance from 8 5 0 3 subsection 3 subsection B at least 50% of the required floor area every capital room with a sloping ceiling shall have a ceiling height of at least 7 feet which is 84 inches the floor area of that part of any room where the ceiling height is less than 5 feet 60 inches shall not be considered as part of the floor area and computing the total floor area of the room upon a field inspection the ceiling height was discovered to be 6 foot 7 inches section 8 5 1 5 subsection 2 of the entire housing cover the city of Ann Arbor housing code allows the Housing Board of Appeals to grant variances from the requirements of chapter 105 standards for approval practical difficulties or unnecessary hardship number 2 the variance does not violate the intent of this chapter and number three the variance does not jeopardize Public Health and Safety staff recommendation is that the variance should be denied okay are there any questions for staff I see that we've had the appellant in the audience too so I'd certainly want to hear from you as well before we make any further decisions but any questions for staff at this point okay hearing none could we hear from the appellant please if you'd like to I assume you do yeah hi thank you so much for coming today I'm Sarah Tanner hi [Music] and it before we live there it's probably one of the oldest if not the oldest homes in the neighborhood it has this original architectural that we've updated the interior but the upstairs room is the six foot seven it's always been used as a bedroom and it makes it possible if it is used as a bedroom for a couple or a small family to be able to live there it's a wonderful neighborhood with a really big yard we just love the house and we you know put a lot of money into keeping it up including we did a new roof a year ago and in 2014 we completely real both the basement and we would like to be able to offer it to a couple or a family with one child because we think it would be a perfect home for them it doesn't affect our rental price whether or not there's one person living there or small family living there we wouldn't charge more rent for it we just would like to have them to be able to live there just off a couple inches and it was built in the 1920s and in order to make that a couple inches higher we'd have to either raise the roof or take away ceiling that you walk into but there's barely any room off a couple inches rise and runs good everything else to code up a smoke detector that's hardwired with the house cable oh and there's plenty of natural light as well any questions for the appellant I have one and I don't know that it's pertinent to the issue did you buy the houses a 1-bedroom or a two-bedroom so it's is it legally listed I mean I know that that's kind of a tricky thing my pamphlet said 2-bedroom I mean what if the city say well there's I get there may be a difference between rental housing code and yeah sure an eagle property so I guess I drew Weston yeah real estate will list real estate agencies will list things as bedrooms or not when they don't actually meet the housing or the building code okay so they can really advertise it as whatever they feel like it sometimes does our city have it listed as a two-bedroom or just a one pitch um I'm not sure okay to this one other point to make is that I know that in city code that if there was to be a bedroom stay in a basement which we're don't have an are asking for then the requirement would be six foot eight and it's pretty close to that so I mean obviously people can live I have a question for staff why are you requesting that we deny the variance 7 inches or 7 foot is the minimum for ceiling height and this is 5 inches apart from that and so you deem that as is not appropriate for public health and safety being so low okay it does have a can lighting we saw the pictures thank you that was helpful to see and I think there's a person standing there yeah yeah have you priced out getting a like a doghouse dormer for a shed-dormer on under the second floor I'm never we just redid the roof but yeah that would interfere with the roof and the structure and we'd have to raise the roof or we could go straight up and raise the roof to but we're trying not to it's got nice hip roof so it matches the neighborhood sure but did you that's the matter no a question before discussion I'm this is not a historical district or is it just know I'm wondering why it's not relevant what the city has it listed as us a one-bedroom two-bedroom I think it's relevant I think we don't have that information I would request that information before we make a decision because I would like I think it's important to the conversation I think they're looking it's two bedrooms mmm it the space meets all the relevant cuz the the stairwell the grasp of a handrail the egress windows the hardwired smoke detectors the only thing is just the ceiling height is the door well going into the property the correct height also yeah into the space yeah I guess I'm questioning what the safety issue is for not calling it or not letting the variance go through if it made us all the other discussion yeah one and I looked at the report fully and a picture is it's a nice-looking space beyond the issue of not complying with you know the full seven feet where you would come around the stairs and enter into the space you're actually sloping from five foot just six foot seven so if you're if you split that in half where you're traveling down that that you're well below six feet to get to the stairway correct so I just put out there for consideration you know this is not approval of the way it's being used this is approval for evermore to you know sell this as a multi occupant unit and if you're talking a family that we understand to the first-floor bedroom is occupied by one person by code yeah so you're you're potentially talking multiple people living upstairs there's an area of three foot six between the stairwell and to where the right but sloping from five foot to six foot seven right so yeah a lot of you know as someone goes down the middle you're gonna be well under six foot to navigate yourself to get to the stairs I mean it doesn't slope at the peak at six foot seven there's an area that goes straight across so you can walk next to the stairwell and have it fully be six foot seven okay but six foot seven is at one peak is it it's not at a peak it goes like this that's all six foot seven to there to there and then it drops back I don't know where that you're right I'm the elevation it shows but yeah it doesn't show it in conjunction with those stairwell there is is there this can't really tell them also the step that is at the top of the stairs is below the floor of the stairs by one step pipe but as soon as you come up Thanks what's the closet situation up there we have an armoire available for renters but there isn't a built-in closet no closet with a door what's the what's the code requirement for closets in a bedroom is there one there's nothing that's just a real-estate thing did we find out what the city says about though I think there's two bedrooms that potentially wouldn't change the code it might change the tax assessment correct yeah that's what I was wondering is if they'd been paying taxes on a house for ten years it's a two bedroom what we tell them you can't use one of the bedrooms that I know that's a different subject than the safety issue just seems like something to consider what's your thought that's important distinction right I just I don't know that it is from a code for service as far as going to you know I mean looking at your tax assessment I guess I did put to the board - it's just I think you know we're forever changing how this can be listed and occupied is this and we have there we've seen things where it's very close it's just close enough you know to some degree in the ceiling height of six foot seven doesn't concern you as much as that you have a sloping roof that you know slopes down to five foot and you're navigating to the only means of egress through a space that's actually you know gonna practically be much lower than six foot seven you know right I cast my mind back two years ago we used to do site visits just see what it was like there lead me home I'm just wondering if there isn't a way that like make them you know make it so that really is the entrance I think into the if we're thinking about safety and code and failure I think that it probably is a hazard hitting your head at the top of a staircase is not the best place to do that right or conversely you know if there was an emergency trying to leave I think that's the part that we're trying to moreso discuss yeah and that's our job right yep that's our job but it does have two huge windows on each end and it has a hardwired smoke detector that talks to the whole house so there will be of a warranty and our were over the life like we have more natural light than we need as a rental space the rise and run and the whole money into it yeah it does would you feel more comfortable with the same visit before making a decision I think it could go either way and I think that if we're looking at cold and safety I can't think we need to go there and look at it because the other piece of information which I mean it's a very well-done appeal yeah I appreciate all the pictures and the schematics I mean for me that was super helpful good I think it was just kind of looking at what the ceiling height is adjacent to the stairway because realize it is sloped just does kind of figure out you know again within reason where we at because we realized that it's the maximum ceiling height but we have that over such a minimal portion of the room because of the structure and age of the home realize those are things we're not gonna necessarily change and the maximum ceiling height is still five inches or correct yep a lot of padding really really flush where the original inspector called it six foot eight but mark call it six foot seven okay it's over very plush carpet are we done with discussion I don't I don't have anything else if you don't so I think we could wrap up discussion and maybe make a motion excuse me I'll make a motion that we make a site visit people who make the final determination all right so we have a motion to table the decision until it's late as it can be made a second discussion on that so what we've done I think in the past is we've had a subset of the board go and represent and either provide a report back or have to site visits where like half of the board goes but thank you for reminding us that we need to adhere to the Open Meetings Act we're a little rusty since we haven't met in two years two years which is a testament the city being able to take care of everything through their normal process and not having to go to the appeal all right so we have a motion in a second we need to vote all in favor of the motion to do a site visit aye opposed okay so we're gonna we don't want to say no yet we want to take a look we'll try to schedule that in a timely fashion because we realize you're waiting you've probably already waited for a bit to get this appeal hard sure thank you very much all right thank you all right old business I'm not aware of any old business other than maybe just the structure of Yosh what hit play I wouldn't be remiss if I didn't give a giant thank you to mrs. lizbo C who is our instructional tech teacher extraordinaire because she really was able to take the vision that mrs. Kouri had for these videos tonight that you're gonna watch and make them a reality so mr. Gallow Shaw whenever you ready I like Freitas workshops because I can write about anything I want and I think I'm better ready to send her I like Plato's workshop because I like the way fiction story will help me like right because you don't tell you I knew like right is where a shop because you could be really creative and because you can let your mind run free [Music] even though I've only been teaching first grade for three years it's incredible the amount of writing stamina that these students have developed these six and seven year olds are able to stay on task and write for a half hour straight and the most incredible thing is that they enjoy this writing and develop a sense of Independence so the writing program this year has really helped our students develop a love of writing they're more engaged they're willing to take chances and they are really proud of themselves to see their growth from the beginning of the unit to the end and I'm extremely it seeks to see that my students are able to structure and SS properly and to do it quickly and thoroughly we have really seen an increase in quality and quantity without their great writers students are given many opportunities to a flashdrive which allows them to practice different styles of writing for example are currently working on four spaces beaches students have experimented has played around with problems in our school class people around us they've been able to gather more information through research as well as creating and conducting surveys with our with other third grade classes and we noticed the both wrote when the students with their first flash draft in the first week per unit we just finished up a nonfiction they wrote expert pieces and we were blown away by the organization of the pieces and their use of transition words which we really focused on in the freezer unit we're really excited to see how much more they will grow at the apprentice one great aspect of our writing workshop is to share time at the end it's just a couple of minutes long but it's a great confidence booster for students to take pride in the progress we made in workshop that day one of the amazing things about Lucy Hawkins writing workshop is the stamina that kids come in from foot trade with us and watching them you can throw throughout the fifth grade year the amount and the quantity and quality of children's reading is something to people I've been doing this for those 20 years and to watch what kids are doing today is amazing I just want to share the amazing writing that my students do and they've grown so much since the beginning and it's amazing the kind of writing that they are producing each and every day [Music] I'm a writer [Music] I'm a writer I don't know I'm a writer we are the writers of the middle school [Music] [Applause] so as you can see from the video the addition of the Lucy Cochran's units of studies has truly helped us become a community where we grow writers and I use the term grow writers because that's truly what we do we take the amazing work that's being done down done down the street at the Cushman school and we build on it in a very strategic progression that's laid out throughout the units if you look at the learning progressions which I think should be up there that you've included in your packets you'll find that each grade level feeds on what the students have already done and learned and it helps them to grow further in that area and I've also included in your packet some of the checklists that our students use when they're analyzing their own writing with a critical eye to determine if their piece has met the grade-level expectations and mr.

gaucho if you kind of flip through them what you'll see is if you zoom in on the first box under structure which deals with leads you see that our kids are growing on what they've done until they have a beginning in first grade where they are trying to write a beginning to in the fifth grade where they are showing what was happening and where and also is giving giving clues to what will later become a problem for the main character by the time they are they are fifth graders and while we've chosen to focus on the narrative unit tonight these progressions and checklists exist for all the units of study in writing and in reading that we take our students through so on to the most important people of the night tonight we've brought students from each grade level with us who are kind enough to share their narrative pieces from earlier this year with you we chose to share our narrative writing as very clearly clearly shows the progression of writing the growth over time that these students make from the time they are first graders right through to fifth grade we ask them to record themselves reading their stories as we know that standing in front of a crowd can often make for daunting work and we want to be sure that you can hear all the fabulous things they've written about they were gracious enough to join us up here tonight to help us be brave enough to speak to you and also to answer any questions that you might have after hearing their pieces we've highlighted the overall progression of each grade level before they come on camera and I think you'll agree that each of these students has very successfully executed the task with pride I'd like to ask each of our students to introduce themselves to you and then we'll hear what they've written I'm Bennett Kircher 2nd grade I am Lucas Sousa and I am in fourth grade I am Noah Kelly and I am in third grade I'm Ella MO and I'm in fifth grade juniper Poe gosh fabulous first grader all right mr.

turquoise waters crash this was very scary Fred in max let me tell you what happened ed and Max had packed had packed everything they needed to go on a trip to Florida they were at the airport are you ready to go to Florida on max question debt yes explain max a little while later and did not step in the plane Wow said max these seats are comfy they share our side and back the plane will start to lift off buckle your seat belt the calm said in the plane took off and in max first I was sleeping crashed startled both of the brothers startled both of the brothers woke up what just happened max said confused I don't know replied it then both of the brothers stepped close to the door and opened it oh no since oh my god yelled max is the brother stepped out we are stranded and said back the plane had crashed in the earth and they were stranger on an island what would we do now sand that's a little worried how are you supposed to get get off this island now the brothers were worrying a little more then that saw something under a rock and picked it up oh my god it's going max it's a walkie-talkie and turned it on in the both heard up is anyone there ed yelled into the walkie-talkie then they heard are you guys one of the survivors from the deadly plane crash the voice said yes yes we are send max into the walkie-talkie okay or comment to pick you guys up then the voice hung up three hours later help has arrived yell dead both of the brothers hopped on the rescue plane and the rescue team brought them both both brought them to Florida the rescue team dropped them off by old mats over the spinning propellers when they were gone said next time can we drive and head agreed exhibition addressed by Ella but they don't understand is that if you are afraid to go on a ride an animal kingdom you don't have to go yeah learned that the hard way we've had an exploring animal kingdom for a while but one though the biggest ride ever came into view the older brother max just had to say can we go on an expedition a tryst hmm Marsten will you be afraid to go on ask my mom physically if you are we don't have to go on send my mom pointing to the huge ride I would say I was scared too I would say I was too scared if I were you Martian is my little brother no I will not my dad put on his hat and said okay then let's go get in one I stared at him and said first where is going they're gonna find out he said it looks like so much fun I wanted to cut the line to go on the last time we went Larsen was a baby and I was too scared to go on so I had to wait outside with my grandma while my brother and my mom and my dad had the best time ever my life goal was to go on that ride and have a good time he walked around for ages to think for that one then we saw it it looked short from there but boy we were completely wrong I I was actually glad it took a while when you waited in line because we proved that the Sasquatch was real I wondered why they put it that there I was pretty sure if it was just for entertainment anyways we went through the old mountain climbing shops their jackets were up strawberry fitness hats in snow pants you watch TVs they had them best line ever he finally got to to the front of the line I walked up to cart number seven actually want to sit with me I asked a pen I've done worse pants right max did you know you could fall off and you're stuck in the cave forever ask max that's silly you can fall off I thought he then got ready to sit in our carts they looked like old line carts for when people minding Kate they were old and dirty for you the whole casting dad sat with barson and mom sat with a random boy this is how it starts they're super excited to go on and then you're completely terrified my stomach was in a knot I wanted to ride it all the way back to Massachusetts but it was too late we started moving it made a loud screech and jerked felons we started slow this is not that bad I thought we started climbing that when I heard screaming ahead of us please stop moving please stop moving so what was rolling down my cheek I couldn't tell if it was from being nervous or from the heat he went from being slow to stop him wait my wish had worked I thought now he was really starting to get hot the order I got the more worried I felt I put my hands on the rail to see how high we were but it burnt my problems ok it's not that high if you don't want to go on this ride jump off I whispered to myself hello did you say something these miles are you scared no anywhere it was either jump off and hurt yourself or be scared when I say she was jumping off we started moving again and shouldn't we make any facial expression my eyes were locked on to cave we were going into it was dark you could hear bats and a slight creak I started getting started getting faster and faster we stopped at broken tracks but I looked around there were so many elastic bands and pennies from the 19 hundreds or thank goodness we stopped I should talk to these blacks and calming down that's why they're broken tracks I asked I haven't been on this ride in a while maybe the Yeti broke down yes there was a friendly smile there's a Yeti - that explains all that Sasquatch footprints all of a sudden it jerked backwards at full speed speed we were going backwards oh no oh no I know I let you down all I was scared of was losing my hat I put the bag in front of me and press their feet on it I was still afraid of the ride but mostly the hat all of a sudden I felt like I was going into looky-loo my head was of course still down I tried to look to my head but I couldn't I started screaming I can't lift my head I also scream something - max I do hope he heard it not she did tell me it went backwards did you say something Ellen I can't hear over how much fun I'm having I learnt just up a squirrel down his throat of course I didn't do it must have been her in a cave and there were no squirrels in my reach I closed my eyes so hard almost as if I was tight I was tightening braces all the sweat was flying off my face I felt bad for the person in front of me they were in the splash zone thanks blue around my brain why did I go on this ride I don't want to fall off you have a strap your fault this is all your fault man he stopped going in a way for me stuff I would say feel better stop because someone is including together in the cart but someone didn't have trouble getting on a cart that if spotlight was on the table then it appeared in the spotlight sasquatches that shadow the power David suggested to the ear-splitting shriek the shadow broke rails like they were twins we started rolling phones so many twists and turns too many to count we were now in the center of the cave there was a giant Yeti with the red eyes it's breached I lifted my head and with fear in my eyes it looked like that Larson thinking hard died and left me scared to death you know I thought that through about two seconds she wasn't scared at all he had the most serious face I had a person I could tell he was paralyzed and bored I thought more I looked back at the Yeti it's for swinging around I closed my eyes shortly after I opened them because I felt daylight there was a daylight but we were heading for a huge drop and that moment I didn't feel fright I felt happy excited I couldn't scream I could have drowned all I could do was smile I put my hands in the air the Dropkick it reminded me of the ride Splash Mountain we are heading for a huge drop my mom pointed up a disney castle it so beautiful that cool ah right in the middle of the sentence from the drop King and who screamed so loudly I laughed so hard that day today I was laughing the same way all of a sudden I wasn't scared I was happy and excited I realized I had fun the whole time I just let my imagination ruin things that are supposed to be fun I could feel the wind in my hair cooling me down I stopped worrying you could only think how amazing this ride was we stopped I was sad it was over that day I learned you can't live in fear because it doesn't actually protect you from anything we have to change chances you guys want to go on again in fact when the spider on his face yeah let's do it I said then I knew there was plenty of sunshine coming my way like I said before the hard way as you can imagine we are so incredibly proud of our students in the writing they've done you can see that they certainly expand on the volume of writing that they do as they grow but that the actual stories tend to zoom in going from an entire day at the zoo to a multi-page story about just one ride and a very full day at Animal Kingdom so I would like to thank our students one more time for joining us here this evening and also a special thank you yes I would also be really miss if I didn't think mrs.

Gifford for her confidence in me as we make this transition of leadership I actually started at The Potter's school will be 30 years ago this coming September I started as a fifth grade teacher there so so as I'm entering the very last part of my career it's it's it's humbling and it feels like coming full circle that I get the opportunity to be the principal of Potter's school on when it came time to pick an assistant principal dr.

Gifford you mentioned it felt like a no-brainer it felt like a no-brainer to me as dr. Gifford alluded to Melissa and I worked together as assistant principals at the Quinn school and for two years and I felt it was a very successful partnership melissa brings a load of experience as an assistant principal early childhood and she's going to be a fantastic partner to work with but as dr. Gifford also mentioned we have big shoes to fill Heidi has left an indelible market Potter's school her devotion to the community to the kids to the staff is going to be a tough act to follow but I feel that with Melissa by my side we'll be up to the task so thank you again thank you as the rule-follower difficult a lot more difficult not to have a script ready but but I truly feel blessed to have this opportunity to work again with Rick I enjoyed my time with him at the Quinn school as assistant principal in Kenton and consider him a mentor I really learned so much under him and and we were both assistant principals at the time but he really just I feel like my administrative style is a lot to do with Rick so I feel honored to be back with him and and working again my kushman friends I take the love of early childhood with me to Potter and look forward to working with grades K to five but I have appreciated my time working with the little ones at Cushman and we'll continue to check in with them and and make sure all is well and we'll miss those little ones running around but I feel blessed to work at Potter and look forward to meeting the staff and getting to know the wonderful culture that I here is over there so again thank you for the opportunity to transfer it over and looking forward to next year I met some college friends earlier today I guess we talked too much I just think it's wonderful and I first of all to quality quality people who will be joining forces at the Potters school my feeling it's always been we should be training our administrators and promoting from within instead of bringing in new people all the time I think we're doing that now and I think we need to continue to do it it can't always be the case that we can promote from inside but when you have quality people like we do in our system like this is a wonderful opportunity for these four people to see that if they really want to do something different within the system those opportunities are there for them so thank you and thank you to both I'm Rick and Michelle and Melissa and I've been doing that you are going to be missed I missed you when you left me to go to get lit sue Potter but you will be missed by so many so many people so we'll talk about that later I'll just echo dr.
