one nation next on our next on my journey we're going to have a recognition a young man from georgia high school after spencer senior recognized for discovery yes you're on my planet so yeah hello thanks for having me all suspension grade 12 dhs 17 years old i tell you this because that may be the only thing you understand for the rest of the night in april 2018 alton did an interview for nasa and was asked the question what do you study most students respond math chemistry spanish not all his response was i like to download light curves from archives as part of a k2 campaign 13 or 14 split into multiple parts and do a computer analysis that runs through the data to see if there are any potential signals i go through the data signals one by one to see if there's anything that looks like a transitioning planet that sounds familiar yeah what does that mean your turn okay um i'm sorry if that was confusing that was from my first ever interview but um okay so why uh what i do um nasa has a couple space telescopes um that observe huge parts of the sky of thousands of thousands of stars and monitor their uh monitor their brightness at the same time look for little dips in the starlight they're called transits and they're caused by planets passing in front of those stars and blocking the light as we see it from earth and i have this i have this computer program that allows me to take that data visualize it on like a graph and look for these repeating dips and starlight i'm able and i'm able to use an algorithm to help pick them out okay you're done that was part one fast forward one year and all this be added again using information from satellites alton discovered a habitable planet 100 light years away i'm not explaining how you did this one because of this discovery alton was invited to co-author recently published a paper and credited with the findings [Music] credited with the findings of having it uh he was asked to come to mit right ask his friend to summer up at mit where he hopes to attend in the fall correct do you hear anything yet uh not you have to know me not until you wrote full news rep but uh i would hope that uh he gets into mit after spending that and discovering a habitable plan and i'm gonna let you describe what a habitable planet is different than the other discussions ready go okay so a it's a potentially heavily planet it's a planet that potentially is it's small enough to likely have a solid surface and it's in its orbit puts in the right place of the so-called habitable zone where it's through its potential temperature is not too hot not too cold uh just right for liquid water to exist on the surface if it has anything and this planet is only about 20 bigger than earth so it's very lightly rocky and gets about 86 percent as much as sunlight is earth so only a little less sunlight so it's very likely to be rocky and potentially able to host liquid surface water [Music] i know there's numbers attached to the planet but will be named after you know rules in place for astronomical objects and they cannot be named after let's not find those [Music] which to be fair is a lot easier to remember than its previous destination it was a lot worse go for it i actually don't remember it's previous uh toi 700d its previous destination was i think 12 characters long i could have done sure you got it right good morning yes on behalf of the board we would like to present this certificate to alton spencer or recognize for discovery and congratulations wonderful thank you did you um this is my uh this is my experience journalism staff would like to thank you all for the continued support of the hour forever disease please check out our website for upcoming events and thank you next week for the new board members these are district goals the board has its own goals these are things that we're doing in the district some of these things that are still working on i'd like to start with number two um the family school community partnership and uh has been working handy very heavily on this she's working with the schools and creating a protocol and developing those training levels so that our schools are more much more accommodating um he has personnel and already been trained and we expect by the end of the year we have more more of our school personnel training in that models each of the titles each of the schools now have a component in the school building plan the other parent involvement so this has taken me to another level in addition the 90 of school buildings have been inspected by the uh the inspector or the fire chief and the advocate would be it's one of the goals here we'll be presenting it's done all over all principles uh drawing plans he selected them uh gone through all made the modifications update and follow them with the state department and then um we'll be doing a presentation if we have time i hope that the upcoming pto board which is next monday two or three presentations so you'll be kind of letting the parents know what's going on with that [Music] that we just initiated for next year we're looking at a multi-year planning process and so as we get feedback from the city about what our ultimate budget will look like um we're going to incorporate it into the process where we make the that we anticipate coming as we prioritize what our needs are for next year uh playing with the board planning with the principles through a regular process where immediate cabinet meets with the principles to assess how those cuts will be implemented for next year and then what that means for us from a multi multi-year perspective so it will be initiated in this spring along with our strategic plans we're also working with a consultant to help us with engaging the principals and the school staff in the strategic plan and looking at how for example things like the scheduling alliance with the strategic plan so looking at a way that we can build inefficiencies as well which we'll be doing a hard look at because that will help us before the things that we need to do as well so the reductions that will come from the city working with the board working with the principals will be building out for next year in the spring as well as for the following next two years looking at the enrollment projections as well so what i envisioned but he has a proposal on timelines that we want to look at and activities one of the principals they were excited about starting this spring instead of waiting for next year we've already started selling the feedback loops for them and that's going on very well um [Music] districts that do it well um at least in terms of the communication piece and the timing so we'll we'll be putting together a calendar so that will be very transparent with your feedback from what we hope to accomplish and by when but he'll get a lot earlier than what we were able to do this year and a lot earlier than what we've been doing in the past because it's important for us to even if we're in limited resources um from a curricular standpoint and from a student support standpoint the fact that you know we've included so many details this year about what we need um a lot of times it's difficult to get to that level because we kind of already know where we're at in terms of you know so don't ask don't even bother asking because we're at this particular place in time and that you know you really push through a lot of the details and the rationales behind the details that kind of really force us to think about different processes and you know i just want to thank you for that because i think when it comes time to actually have to make decisions um in public and voting on what we do with our budget it's important to know what we you know we have to make cuts what it is that we're not getting or we're getting as a result of whatever budgets we get so i appreciate the process that he put us through this year already i see some wonderful things that happen so thank you so much kim has been working with [Music] um so we are just starting to turn to now the process of recruiting um and i'll talk about it kind of two different areas um certainly teacher recruiting and you've heard from me um often around this time of year that we start to corral folks particularly administration where they're gonna shortage areas and send them to certain targeted places where we've had some really good success in terms of recruiting um that does include going south to distorted black colleges and universities but also to some of our connecticut-based schools so i at uconn uh westbound southern so right now we're pulling the administrators who are reportedly who all try to give a day or two to go out to do some recruiting and to do some kind of early solicitation of no high fire candidates that we kind of circle and try to get into the district so um some of the challenges that we face here a year on that are retention so often you'll find some people who are interested though you're trouble holding on to them through the summer so we're going to really make an effort to really focus more on that piece also as you're probably aware um we had a couple of interim appointments this year in terms of administrators so we're going to be running some panels again with um soliciting administrators for openings and we are testing the net as wide as we can if that's been really good success with the advertising we've done locally um but we're also now affiliated with a new uh new to us organization that's more new england based to try to attract as broad or cool as we can for some of our spots so we're kind of continuing to cast the net the last piece of it is the state department of education continues to try to bolster the resources available to publicize openings for all districts who participate so i've been working with them on a way to heighten our presence on a state department of education platform that's also designed to cast the net widely attract all kinds of candidates including candidates of color which has been targeted for some time now to try to make sure that we're moving in the direction of creating a workforce that reflects the demographics of our kids and so those are all ongoing initiatives are just starting to gear up now as march 1st comes in that's when we start to get sort of busy with improving that morning so three positions open in adventure chemistry [Music] a fairly rigorous hiring procedure for those principals assistant principals in cabinet level employees and i know many of you have participated in the process what happens is we do a screen on the cabinet largely here by the superintendent assistants and myself we screen in candidates for interviews and then there are two panels of interview two interview communities that run concurrently and they are typically six to seven members we do have two board event members who typically participate in the panel process with us um the first panel is made up of administrators primarily lots of curriculum folks people that can have a pretty high level discussion about pedagogy content with the applicants for the position and the other panel is what we affectionately refer to as people most likely to be affected by the hire so that's obviously teachers in the building it may be special ed or pbs staff members people that are going to be actively engaged with this particular administrator those two panels as i said run concurrently they work together on a set set of questions in each location and then i go in and debrief both of those panels to try to find what we describe as kind of where the gap is there are always candidates that are up higher and then there's typically a trench or a gap in other people who just aren't right from this position part of why i go to debrief it's twofold one is that we were finding where it's very hard for people to rank in order one two three four it was always i've got one and two twos and three and so part of this conceptual idea of finding those people who are right for the position and then kind of a gap and people who may really be right for another position um not necessarily this one and so the degree is also intended to tease that out um and frequently we'll go back to people that have been candidates in the prior pool and say you know that position wasn't right at that time for you but you know are you interested in we're having seen the posting we put up for this one and that just gives us what they call their broad eyes when we're looking at candidates and we're trying to you know keep in touch with those people that we want to be able to bring into the district for a variety of reasons once that process is done there's typically a list of three sometimes scores two finalists who then go to the superintendent and his leadership team and another set of interviews going on there and then um the selection is made there is also usually a writing component in there so there's sort of a task a demonstrating test it might be here's a fact scenario of a student so it's really rigorous um it's a lot of interviewing and candidates come through wow um but usually the feedback i get is i feel like i was able to really put my best foot forward because i have these sort of different kinds of opportunities to do that so i think all in all it's been good but it's it's a heavy lift for sure asking for volunteers so right so in the next i would say a couple of weeks we'll start to put the panels together we'll close the posting off of the campus together and so i'll need two um volunteers typically um will always the injuries occur during the day so if there's a particular day of the week that works well or something that can okay so the last one talks about professional accountability organization learning and i know i had a good presentation to you about the school business and you know we gather a lot of information to talk a little bit about here but what we want in the next leaders that we need in this district coming and informing our adjustment of what schools need particularly those schools that are going to be open you know we're trying to refine the skill level efficiency of folks that are coming to us you know they could be solid prepared folks but not really um steeped well to enough known so we'll start first a little bit about the professional development workings and how cara was pushing on the calendar the reason why she was on the calendar was that we're trying to get our organization home for next year on this on the calendar about bd you want to just talk a few minutes on what you're coming away with foreign [Music] was very critical that we see through that place we started a process this year um called data dives and school reviews and structural rounds um and so we've gotten pretty good over the last couple of years with volcanic data and we spend lots of time honing our skills to that area we have our resident expert here who has pushed us in many ways through processes that ground our decision-making and evidence and so that we are kind of forced to to make sure that we're making the best decisions for kids making assumptions about what's happening in buildings based on a broad number so um this year um i wanted to make sure that we married that process with school visits and follow-ups so we're not just looking at data and having those conversations but we were generating questions about that data and then we were entering the schools and spending the day with um all the brick art folks and the principal of our leadership team and so what we have been doing for many many weeks in a row spending very long days analyzing data generating questions and hearing building the framework to tease out problems of practice that may be happening in the building and generating solutions and strategies for those problems of practice and so in those visits um you know it's clear that we have several areas that we need to be working on especially in terms of shifting pedagogy and support for all learners in our classrooms and um you know so we have a lot of training to do and we have areas very specifically around university of literacy and support for second language learners that we'll be spending the next couple of years on for sure and so in order to do that um we you know wanted to sanctify some professional time to work with teachers um but also in addition to that we want to part of the budget ask this year as you've heard earlier was to be able to create coaches to coach and because we have so few supports in the buildings right now in terms of student support students feed intervention and again our needs grow every year and we slip further farther behind in terms of student supports our coaches get called to work with students to help with those needs because of that i feel we've had a little bit of an erosion of what we call tier one instruction through one instructions for classroom instruction that happens every day so when that starts to break down in terms of teacher pedagogy and professional practice and scale over time then you actually feed your own problem within your bedroom so we need to increase some of the skills across the board we have amazing staff members you know amazing teachers who are working so hard but we need to get smarter about standards-based instruction we can get started out sciopt training which is a shelter instructional observational protocol and working with things like hope standards which are appropriate overlays for students who are second language learners and the things that we haven't had training on and that had some work in the secondary level but we just haven't got to some of this work and it's budget related a lot of this capacity um and staffing um we need folks to get out to training into buildings and so the goal is to build capacity over time and to grow that out and so we've been engaging in professional learning communities with principals plc's with teachers we're hoping that the professional development calendar can better support some of these needs but also from the budget perspective um having those student support specialists frees up our coaches to actually build that capacity that needs to happen in order to start to shift within the years in day one and so you know we're excited about that i'm really praying for this budget this year i wouldn't believe um because you know the vision is there the will is there and we have really good people in place and the teachers um deserve to have the support that they needed that they've been asking for and um you know we're really hoping that we can get some traction in this area so um the school visits have been very powerful in the sense that we're able to identify building specific things to work on but also it has been forming district things that have been maybe ambiguous clear that we need to find better for teachers and clean up some things in some areas that we can provide more support on through our work and also perform budget and resources so we're getting kind of a nice look at what schools have and do not have this process as well and that has helped me to prioritize some of the budget things that we did this year so this board will get sort of [Music] those big ticket items that we're going to be working on um but generally you know a sneak preview is that we're going to be working a lot with k5 on the side strategies supporting second language learners along with building a math culture here at the airport so under one on the growth online it talks about evidence as one of the voices will sell how do i know well we'll have some products for you but the elding program that's the english language development program gusto's talked about that um i'm really excited about that we've been looking at that for two years we're actually piloting you now i'm really really hopeful for that that's really gonna pay off for us the other thing is um we're looking at the libraries the multicultural techs at some point yes so we have a couple things um the curriculum template now that we collect so when written is is written um again budget ask is that we can get started with some some areas that were lacking curriculum but our new budget our new curriculum template pardon has calls for things like increased identification explication and vocabulary that builds second that builds background knowledge for students things like cognates identified cognitives in our curriculum and built-in embedded language supports but also call for using texts that are multicultural and are diverse in nature and that celebrates the diversity of our district so the last thing that that evidence school department allocation recommendations reflect an overall budget that's what carouse thank you courtney for it really was an important part for us this year was to build those um it used to be silos but now we're trying to work them together in terms of the resources it is a big deal to get that money to revise our curriculum you're going to see from the knee ask important that you know we needed to do a lot of work in what happens in the district whenever we are reduced on those income so what happens class sizes go like this things like curriculum writing all things that have to happen uh don't happen and then you don't have to articulate so it's so important for us to to prioritize and to bring this together and have a focus of how we're going to budget this month and if we can't budget it this year then it becomes a priority for the next year abcd however you feel about the portrait of a graduate that's going to drive this work knee ask is asking for this district what do you expect from your graduates then how do you expect to get there not just at the high school but from middle school and from elementary school that's that's the staircase that's the pathway that's the vision that we're going so the multi-year strategy for a budget is really important i keep teasing her saying no you've got 12 million dollars 12 and a half million dollars that's a lot but what has happened over the years not just in january the money is going to operational points to mitigate the achieving gap you still have to do an application and this has to have a nexus to how you reduce the gap but um in some ways it's a plan given the money that we shouldn't use so it's important for us to leverage the uh these these activities and i think i was trying to point to trying to mention you know all what do you do with the data what you're doing our fourth year now or fifth year of the data-wise process we're really getting to the point where you know we can see what's high leverage we can triangulate not only what's on paper but when not only what we're training people in but what's going on in schools through this this authentic work so we have a 360 of what we're doing um you know if you stick around long enough we're going to be a lot better we're guaranteeing that each and every year in terms of doing this work it's really important so when you decide what that graduate's going to look like no matter who's sitting in your chair in my chair there needs to be a clear consistent passageway for our district going towards something and it ought to be supported here to here no matter who's in leadership positions so last year someone said to me well how do i know you know how kids are doing but there isn't one barometer in this school system you have seven schools of distinction you're still not happy with that because there are other schools not getting here even the youngsters that are getting there need to have more supports just in reach and proficient levels we're not moving that direction it's multi-faceted and then when arguing at the state over a number of years we ask them to put a profile together so we have an idea of how we're doing and that's what we're going to go over tonight she's the state when the eminent state's having any issues they call kara and she kind of helps them through this stuff she has a very unique understanding of that she sits down with me we go over all the materials of our district data team then she'll sit down with each principal and helps them about their data and then how it informs what they're doing and that's that's the cycle of improvement that we talked about in the data wise process so tonight for the first time the report too is going to deal with what they call college and readiness report on graduation rates dual enrollment and outcomes that was supposed to do tonight and we'll do that now put it up there and we'll talk through it you all receive this i'm carol wanser for those of you i haven't met um i'm happy to be here i'm the administrator for data assessment and research so i work closely with the cabinet to to do district and school improvement um so there is a slight modification to this report as you can see and when it was sent to you i did notify you that the graduation rates are not yet public we've received projected on grades that the state is not yet releasing so there are some numbers that they're still playing with the projection needs to be around may 2020 so um i'll provide a highlight over over that as soon as um as soon as it's released so um we will talk about uh early college opportunities dual enrollment ap enrollment and outcomes of the accountability index since they were released that was under date of report three so we'll just kind of flip-flop a couple things although there are some graduation rates results in here a part of the accountability index from 1819.

so um this is the goal one growth and student learning and achievement in college and career readiness for all students under the superintendent goals so these will be the things we'll be going over in the report including the schools of distinction the executive summary was put together for you in order to highlight some of the data points that are throughout the uh we're looking at you know a wide range opportunities and about seven years ago we did project open choice which we found that there were a lot of um challenges and a lot of impediments and a lot of hurdles kids were going through families were going through to challenge themselves to take higher classrooms they they um they just didn't fit them up they weren't getting the recommendations from folks and some kids that were bright capable maybe not pushed hard enough um and just were you know they were just had an interest but just weren't pushed so we did we started a project open doors which basically said if you have the foundational work that you need into the course and you have the desire to do it well then put your name in and we promoted the fact that they were able to register we went from 250 students taking uh ap um courses like 250 to 500.

a limit of three minutes will be imposed for each individual when you approach the podium please state your name for the record and the first one we have is Tracy scope my name is Tracy skok Thank You governing board cabinet members and community members in the audience for allowing me to speak I have been employed with Dysart since 2012 and I am currently in a title one school in El Mirage where we are working daily with our students on their academics and really working on reading writing and math skills each year there are many gaps to fill in on our students academic knowledge as well as our social and emotional skills that we are also required to teach in the classroom every year our students need more from public schools but we don't always have more to give our communities expect more to help raise their children and to productive members of society in this new technological age and we continue to give even when we have little or nothing left teachers and pairs are working tirelessly to communicate and teach the four C's to communicate problems and possible solutions to teach educational barriers to help students develop the tools to overcome them and the perseverance to succeed and they're overcoming of them however we are all running on empty and this mostly is why we need hope and more hope not only hope but funding in Arizona for education not only to compensate our staff for the endless hours that are put in both in and out of school hours or to allow more funding for classroom supplies but to get those supplies so the students have papers and pencils to write with on a daily basis we need to have more hands-on experience for our students who have never been outside of the classroom or outside of El Mirage City we need to include field trips which are extremely limited in our schools and to allow more teachers to come in and work at our schools and to work in smaller classroom sizes so that our children get the care and attention that they deserve and they get that specialized individualized instruction and practice we have good schools great staff and wonderful teachers who like in the giving tree' have given all they can give each and every year no matter what monies come or do not come from our state I strongly urge you to consider keeping these people and their energies by rewarding them reward not just our teachers but all of our staff with the appropriate funding and pay raises and in classroom investments for our students so we might continue to keep them on the right path and keep them to exceed their goals as we aid in doing that and letting our students succeed for a lifetime thank you thank you the next one we have is Barbara Shelly hi my name is Barbara Shelly and thank you governing board members cabinet and audience I've heard a lot lately from a group of people that they want that want everyone to believe that die cert fails they're students that the district should not go for a bond or override because the test scores are so dismal by their standards if you look back at my son's test scores and grades you might think that Dysart schools failed him however quite the opposite is true thanks to the teachers and staff and Dysart he is a success story when we moved to surprise from Irvine my son's developmental preschool told us that he would never learn phonics somehow his first-grade teacher at Kingswood missed the memo by the end of first grade he had learned phonics and was reading the librarian took him under her wing and created a special bond with him the cafeteria manager went out of her way to make sure he always received lunch no matter how many times his many checks he somehow lost even though he struggled through elementary school there were so many teachers who saw more than a test score the fourth grade teacher who fostered a love for reading the sixth grade teacher that saw the creativity in his writing when everyone else only saw mistakes in a junior high team that never gave up on him there was also the school counselor that had him help in a first grade classroom to help with his confidence in shyness I remember being so scared to send him off to high school and worried about what he would do after he graduated fortunately Valley Vista took him under their wing there was the English teacher who worked with him to pass writing aims so he could graduate he had never scored above far fall below fortunately the teachers at Valley some more than a test score he joined yearbook and found a love for photography thanks to a very special teacher to this day one of his football coaches takes an interest in how he is doing and keeps in contact I will never forget the day anything came home and told me that it's math and English teacher talked to him about college and thought he could do it my first thought was what the heck are they thinking since he was a year old I only I worried about his future and never thought he would ever go to college but fortunately for him they saw his potential and not some test score he decided to go to GCC and eventually transferred to ASU where he graduated magna laude and received the Cynthia lakyn Award for outstanding undergraduate student in anthropology he then went on to Eastern New Mexico University where he was a graduate student of the year in anthropology and a student leader of the year today he's working on his PhD in anthropology at Texas A&M within the Center for the Study of first Americans where would he be today if his first grade teacher had 30-plus students their classroom and couldn't give him the support he needed if kingswood had not had a librarian to take a special interest in him or a school counselor to foster his confidence what if Valley Vista didn't have the money for an English teacher to work with struggling students a yearbook teacher or a football coach to help students reach their potential what if his English and math teacher had so many students that they never saw his potential fortunately for my son he had a school board in community who believed in the importance of funding schools and not simply how does the district test scores compared to other districts every child deserves to have what my son had we need the bond and override to ensure all students can succeed thank you was that the last one thank you all right we'll go ahead and move on to are we doing ee1 superintendent update I'm sorry student update dr.
we increased the number of minority students in it that was our projected purpose and there's no question students that participate in an ap even if they take the exam even if they get a two even if they get a one they have a higher success rate if they want to go into college and succeed there is the experience that we're asking for but we've been able to worry that we have that time you know when you increase the end in the denominator and then you're going to possibly have less kids getting into three that's the standard that a column says that will take college credit but we in fact stood pretty solid with the threes that did not did not decline precipitously and we've increased the number of students and they'll see when i was there and when we talked to the state we felt that um they should give credit to scholarships that do that you know they find ways to beat on urban auburn districts and if we're going to encourage these kids to take risks and they should give us some points for that and that's how this system of campaign started becoming popular uh deco the uh denver early college activity and put that in for a number of reasons um but one of them is that they'll be taking more college courses and you'll see in here yes in fact they are and which groups of youngsters are doing um there are eight indicators in here about um high school graduation post-secondary interest rate four-year cohort graduations and continue looking at identifying structures trying to support the literacy and math we sit down with this material sit down with the high school look at youngsters that are taking classes not taking classes you heard me come to you and ask for money so we could add some extra sections with the new students that came this year plus we knew if they didn't get into a course what would happen is they're in study halls and in four years they're not going to be in position to graduate so your graduation rates are going to be affected so we go out find students making sure they're on the graduation day we have after-school programs of kids that are making up their time on credit recovery so that you know if they're able to if they have to seek time would have missing gaps in their learning they could by staying after school going through this end and get their credits and then move towards a graduation um at the end of four years anything you hear a lot about we're discovering i don't think it's a big surprise uh in terms of the our inability to really deal with our math issues um we're having students not moving a long continuum to the point where when they enter high school that they're able to succeed in the upper level courses you know whether it's a b b c calculus geometry algebra they just don't have the foundational school now it doesn't start at middle school it starts at elementary school so we're looking at elementary teachers are just not training with people in mathematics this is not true well they'll do some math we have some folks that can but they're linked in their development and their their proficient skills in literacy and social science social skills but we're trying to step it up so you know you have coaches one of my coaches your coaches really are model folks and put together lessons work with teachers and deliver that curriculum you kept hearing from people and rightfully so there's so many kids i'm interested needs help really being somebody working with me they need somebody working with the kids and they really diverted our attention to the work that we had to do we gave into that because in fact it means you feel right you went into a classroom you had such a disparity of students skills they couldn't really deal with all of the kids so they needed some assistance so we allowed the coach to deal with tier and we go up here two and three or three we have a different model that we're moving forward with and we need to get to those third and fourth graders second graders uh and even kindergarten and and do it in a meaningful um high leveraged way so in this work that we're doing over the next few years you're going to see that thing develop i think you will start seeing them better success in high school we'll start seeing better numbers on our uh our bsats our sat and all of that testing as we move through this over the years so that that's part of the thinking here um they very outperform the state uh in eight critical areas and we'll go over them uh we've decreased in a few and stayed equal with some but it's not about one score one sa team going up or down it's a profile you can see how the district is doing in all of these areas which really gives you a good indicator of how we're doing as a school of seven of the seven to 13 schools are recognized as schools of distinction um and then we're going to look at the student performance on standardized s.a.t and acc if you can turn the page on advanced placement and then denver early college um it's pretty it's a narrative just talks about how to get into them and and what they can earn the actual numbers will do the advanced in 2019 20 the number of students in ap which is the first column was that eleven hundred and thirty um that though those can be repeated students so five that's how many are like enrolled in the courses across the high school if you look at the number of classes that are offered as 23 but there's multiple sections um which are outlined on the next slide um if you uh look at non-duplicate students for total ap students with 622 so those are the students who are taking multiple courses um and then out of the total students at dhs 19 percent are enrolled in an ap course which is you know very high and relative to last year as well and the number of students who whose race is identified as black hispanic asian multiracial that is 52 percent if uh what sal was talking about by the change since 1516 we're looking at a percentage point change of 14 of students um entering into ap courses we don't have the ap exams yet for this year obviously but they've been relatively the same one year has been an outlier at 49 but we've been relatively about 47 percent of students growing in three or higher but again the research around exposure to these high-level rigorous courses often projects better performance in college um so the next two slides outline the ap course enrollment for 1920 but i did give comparison just over time typically people asked for about three years so um that was what was provided um you have the enrollments on um in in one column and then the number of sections offered so for 1920 when we were talking about the 1130 students that's 61 sections of ap courses and then what we i did on the right is break out the ethnicity um composition of those courses so so with the board think about this you know it's like you know always learning about the remedial studies we're always no we have a comprehensive high school and that means something that means you're going to offer courses across the board maybe courses you're going to offer electives and we have a wonderful high school in terms of giving our youngsters the experience so if we look at this we have the third in a sequence or the fourth in the sequence where our district may be 11 students we offer that you know if it drops down to six or seven we may have to do it every other year but we offer courses that uh french aps too so that's you know it's it's the last of the sequence we feel as though we're going if you're going to study this we'll bring the student through we don't want to cut those out you know they've been very easy for you very easy for me to say you know what you don't have a manner of 50 min when you're 15 you're out that's it we don't have that course we don't do that and i'm staying away from that because i think we give a lot to youngsters that need support and support should not to only those that have deficits and skills capable able smart students with skill gaps that we work with they're youngsters that are motivated like the youngster who's here this evening okay that wants it has the passion we should give them that opportunity so in here reflects that thinking and the board's saying he teaches in front of kids and that's what we're doing we need kids in front of teachers in front of kids and that's what this reflects how do you determine yeah is there a threshold of systems if if there's there's one in here for six it just sometimes we could combine within the same class you know a digital one year for chinese for example there are three levels within one class 16 or 17 kids right we will do that exactly right just the the the the last in the sequence means that's like right and so that's the last in the sequence that's the highest level of data so they don't fill up as long as they're within a certain range reasonable range so i'll still run the course so the students can finish out that sequence so the next slide is is a representation of our deco our denver early college opportunity courses that were described earlier uh those have kind of changed over time depending on reflecting what was needed um but we have increased up to 17 sections and 390 students enrolled which is fantastic and the um the ethnic composition is a little bit different than the ap courses um and one thing to mention is that um typically of our population that identifies as white about 30 of those students home language is not english okay so you have a very diverse um group of students who are taking these courses all right uh the accountability system which is referred to several times has been um within the state for the last couple of years it was a way to level the playing field somewhat of looking at school performance and district performance index a little bit differently leveling the playing field for urban districts and really looking at student growth over time so that we're not always just looking at the proficiency score and noting that students enter as they enter and they're all our kids so um this is also the satisfied federal state requirements to promote transparency this is stuff we review with principals as well as at a district level this is the accountability system that's used throughout the state it's also what helps to identify a school as a distinction but also focus schools and turnaround schools which we have there are 12 indicators as we go through around academic achievement which is performance index academic growth that includes um xbac s.a.t as well as ngss the next generation science standards which are a new indicator this year as well as english language proficiency growth which is noted through the lost links exam assessment participation rates chronic absenteeism preparation for post-secondary career readiness that's the coursework what we just talked about as well as the exams whether students are on track in ninth grade that's the amount of credits that they earn during their ninth grade year also middle schools get credit for how their ninth grade students do so those indicators go back to the middle schools as well as preparing for them graduation for the four-year adjusted rate as well as the six year cohort and post secondary entrance rate which is kind of a um a challenging point that a lot of urban districts dispute because there are many reasons it's not just who gets it it's who attends and and they talk about how it's somewhat out of the control of the district but we're still um we're still evaluated on it and then the physical fitness and arts access so this is kind of hard to read on the larger slide i hope you're yeah just a very good point um so when the state moved to this model it was to prevent really with the narrowing of the curriculum so what that means is that when the state dispenses word creditor there's still paper focus not just numeracy or literacy um and schools then focus only in those areas and then sort of um you know sometimes can drop other areas that are important and speak to more well-roundedness so those indicators reflect the other things that are also very important to be looking at and give schools of credit for those things um again to finding letting it up why dividing up the sort of the net on what's important to those in high school choice that sort of test practice that you can get into so so we already knew the state about this because you know she's used the word marrying in the curriculum if it were up to some places they'd get rid of the arts um they'd get rid of the physical education and electives and they'd focus on the two eras our youngsters would be shortchanged and we insisted that they allow they gave us an argument board saying we're not going to go cut the arts we're not going to cut the electives and we're not going to cut the ap we need to be provided a balanced approach and the state understood that and put it into their accountability universe which i think was a it was a win for our kids and the mom says you don't have to go necessarily to get these let you stay right here and have a wonderful education opportunity and that's what we do so the next list so if i went to rogers park in eighth grade and i have a high passing rate in my ninth grade year and earn enough credits to progress to my 10th grade as a sophomore rogers park gets credit for that student doing well in the accountability index so on track we're on track for graduation so if you're on track it goes back to the middle so you're going to read as an atta boy yeah as like you prepared them carefully explaining the part how the high school gets credit if the kids do well in college because it's essentially the same idea so it's they they get credit for the political secondary entrance right we do not hear um so kathy the question that you were asking so similarly the high school also gets credit when our high school students enter college in college or colleges and actually stay there right right so and so the idea is that our middle schools we gave credit back as our high school students new high school students are doing well so thank you yeah sure one of the things to note um in the accountability index is there is a group often to refer to as high date students those students are qualifying for free reduced lunch our special education students or our english language learners you can be one of those or you can be all three okay so it's like kind of a super group since we would be technically double counting kids and the n number or this it might be too small of a number to count as one group not in our district but in others so um so areas within the accountability index i i provided the points earned there's a formula for each so you get the index you get what you're according to the formula what your index rate is what the target was at the state set and how many points you earned out of the maximum number of points so then you'll see the column that says percent point points earned that's kind of your score okay so that's kind of what you got on the test to the right in the column is what the state average points are for so i provided that to the right where there is a star indicates where we performed above the state average percent of point earned which included the high needs students ela performance math performance high needs students science performance science students ela academic growth high needs students as well as progress towards english language proficiency and literacy and their oral development as well as chronic absenteeism in all students and high needs students so that was pretty fantastic overall we scored a 72.6 which is highlighted in yellow on the bottom and the state was at a 74.2 i would note that we only went we went up 0.2 from the previous year but the stake went down 0.9 so we were going at least in the right direction although it's considered to be a stable score within a percentage point so i would say that is even um let's see so it board-wise off on some of these things some years back you eliminated the tracking and [Music] that's why i think what you're seeing all kids moving forward they don't have the lower track it's really presenting a challenge no question for teachers but in terms of opportunities you look at something like this this is the way you need to look at this and across the board are kids moving in the right direction all kids vote we're going to have some gifts and some bad news but if we move the right direction i think it says to us here not only the rate post college attention but as they go through our curriculum the kids are gaining opportunities and they're in and they're being challenged and maybe having difficulties but at least they're able to perform and that tells us at least we're moving in the right direction and that's a good thing so on the next slide i provided a comparison of our score from the previous year to this year you'll notice four gray shaded boxes which are areas that are new to the accountability index this year it was always their goal but they were kind of ready to release the the data in these areas so um science performance index for all students and high needs students as well as the english proficiency and literacy forum again that's the last links um so you know you can see which areas we decreased and which areas we increased we decreased in four which we're looking at critically particularly during the school reviews because not all schools went down in these areas as the district and how it was counted we went down but there are certain places where those were areas of distinction according to state and as particularly the southern explosive distinction elementary schools um the college and career readiness um courses when when dramatically are up this year um that includes workplace um workplace courses so it's not just ap and deco it's it's it's all sorts of experiences for students and the cte pathways that we've been discussing so students will get credit for taking two courses that are that are designated as cte how uh computer and technology a lot of those are some of these courses that we're going to see in these pathways students the student takes two courses in the sequence you also get credit in this in this bucket as well so we're looking to increase um and to combine electives and show kids to take these two electives um they go together and they could maybe lead to this industry recognized revenge that's the goal to get them in those directions but the state the state will also be awarded credit um for those types of pathways in this accountability index okay that's just a quick question um on the the preparation for career readiness the percent of capacity exams um then this one ap yeah so it's not just like the the ones that are connected to the course it's considered overall preparedness for entering college is there any concern about that when i know i mean like obviously like the numbers are going down a little bit so that makes sense but there's a 20-point gap there almost trying to get you know between what the state is looking for so yes not that this is where we sort of end up and that's where we still struggle with building our proficiency we're doing a great job of growth we have to get over this hump and we've got to get kids on grade level we have to do that early in the younger grades right but to do that we need to um make changes in how we meet the needs of our learners because they are very diverse you can have learners with inability to read and very advanced in the same classroom and speak english i think so um you know we're going to work on how to how to address the needs of the diversity um and provide for students do that um and at the same time increase their rigor in our program okay high expectations for all and that's that's key and when when uh directs that but when you um get into a a situation where you have so many learners with so many needs there's a tendency to kind of teach you know a lot of your students a little bit lower than where you normally would be teaching them on grade level and you know over time that that just sort of it's like an urban curse really so when you start to reach this critical mass of so many students needing help a lot of your energies are pitched in that area and it's very easy to lose sight of the rigor that's needed in the standard and at the grade level to meet expectations and every break for hairs have a little staircase for the next and so when we're falling behind the exit outcome is reflected in those sap scores those ap scores things like that and so we need to work on getting that staircase in good shape is that is that something you take back to the state and say you know we're doing our best all of these measures here but we're still we can't close this achievement gap and the money that you know being supplied to the states just not you know aware of all those things particularly coming from urban district historians experience similar challenges to danbury but it's you know it's a massive it's a massive issue but we're definitely behind for sure it takes a lot of resources to close off and and organization and training and you know you know what needs to be done you need some systems in place to get them and we're really looking at the vertical piece right so so what are the high leverage areas in each level that we need to really concentrate on to move that so um the next piece that is a part of the accountability and that's exactly some of what we were just starting to discuss is the achievement gap um and and a graduation gap so a um another indicator on the accountability index is identifying performance gaps in ela math science graduation rate and then any assessment participation rates they monitor that extremely closely so if you realize there wasn't an indicator three in the list um it's because it's all about participation you cannot football below and 95 in all students or high needs or you're you're automatically identified so um so you don't ask certain students to stay home and that you're testing all students and and those types of things so um so that's a great preventative piece that the state put into um into motion um the ela performance index were not considered to be an outlier in that area so you could look at the size of our gap so there's the non-high needs rate the high needs rate the size of our gap next to the this state mean and if we're substantially different from them one standard deviation then we are considered to be an outlier um we do have a graduation rate gap in our six year cohort so the amount of students who graduate within six years so they they track the four-year graduation rate and the sixth year so if you compare your non-high needs rate to high needs rate we are above the this dating that is something we've really drove into deeply with high school to identify who are those students tracking them by uh on an individual level um trying to retain them um and and figuring out what our problems of practice and the area offering twilight and summer school particularly on targeting students who are english language learners who take a number have to take a certain amount of courses and their language proficiency isn't in place so typically they take longer to graduate some students we were finding were dropping out when they realized they weren't going to graduate in time because they had to work so we tried to re-engage and come up with innovative ideas to retain those students um with how long they needed to be here um so with our projected rates that aren't quite out yet i saw an uptick with the ell students graduation rate so we're hopeful for that um although the rates aren't public yet um we did put some intervention pieces into place yeah over the last year we asked the state in our case [Music] right now if a youngster needs to graduate on time and it's behind like this and they realize that they drop out to permit us to put them in evening school adult debt and get those coursework and then transfer it over and have them graduate they won't do it it's it's regulations that they're having problems but when we met with the commissioner who still will promote that meeting urban certainly for promoting the dual enrollment you know it's really like doing all-in-one college you're allowed to be in high school and college why can't they be in high school and imported that about that and take that english class right and then go to work at school come back and take it and then put it back to graduate you know it doesn't make sense not to it's a funding problem it always comes down to money so anyway at least we've got people's attention but that's one of them trying to change their mindset i think that yes um the next slide is uh kind of what what puts schools into on schools of distinction just for your information certainly not going to go through it people always pass but um if you'd like to discuss it further i'm always happy to typically run the top 10 enter schools of distinction for various reasons including high performance or high growth um you can also be a greatest improver within this day from one year to the next we've had seven schools of distinction last year we have seven schools again slightly with some slight different names all elementary schools elementary middle and high school are evaluated separately um so haystown isn't against broadview they're against all of their middle schools um so hayestown avenue milwaukee primary south street great plane ellsworth stadley and um great plane and uh millridge primary were also high performance schools so that means around their proficiency which is fantastic um so this is how you close the achievement gap when people wonder right and so we are the only district in the entire state with seven schools of distinction last year we were kind of greenwich we have one more than greenwich no offense to greenwich but we like to we like to be first [Music] so um so those are so um those are the schools of station and then it shows you which category they're in um within because you can be in a one two or three if you want if you're a school of distinction and then how they qualify just just okay and so for for elementary school it's the um smarter balanced assessment which is how they track the growth [Music] okay so so next steps last page you know the fourth pull it down efforts represent a multi-year process of appropriate resources that's where we kind of started over time that's the long view of what we're going to do um and then you see the balls on top supporting the journeys of school and i know the board here is just a lot and you know i i need to think about you know teachers know what they need and that's true but we know we need as a district and we talked about the evaluation system really not making the changes that we want and trying to challenge ourselves to looking at our teacher evaluation system in such a way where it's going to really improve instruction and people take risks and we improve our pedagogy throughout the district so you know when cara goes around and you start looking at training needs you know there's going to be a lot of time for individual needs although it will be some some people want specific words there's a lot of work that needs to be done some folks when we go in there feel they're doing a good job it would be a good job with the wrong kids in front of they have to understand who's in front of them and that's a whole mindset and that needs to change you know part of the stuff you're saying then we argue with the commission you know part of it is our own internal mindset of what kids can and cannot do um when we got into the marzano work some years back he did some research across the country and he discovered that about 40 of the work that exposed particularly in urban districts is repetitive work if you add that here and here to here look where our kids are the pacing issue that camera's talking about getting to high school look at the tremendous gaps so we got to figure out what are the standards who's in front of us and how we can teach for those kids so one of the things that we're trying to do is the coaches will change what cell does in terms of being effective proficient teacher and then we're looking at what we call student support specialists they'll be hands-on folks that will smoke meet with small groups to do some of the works or or tier 1 instruction can be much more solid than just remedial work because that's what we're going to see happening that's a big fight over time to change so that's part of the effort that we're doing um i don't know and then the dld work that we're doing our student body um someone said that last night it was a good point the psyop work they were doing there's good good instruction across the board for all kids and seven percent of our kids um you know are are non-white and and yeah whether uh or scs in terms of their educate their their uh their need for english development or whether it's the mother disability or if they happen to be indigent still need this type of background knowledge still need good training in terms of science work so the work that we're doing it's not just for the nurses that are deficits for all of these and that's what we have to do here and then when i said that care no matter what happens in the budget you've got to put the coaches in you've got to put the support and you got to do the eld and then we got to work back okay no matter what we do so that's sort of our priority yeah good yeah these are my goals but this is the district goals we all work on this as a team in terms of the work that we do and again thank the folks enough for the hard work and you have hard-working teachers you've got hard-working principals which is trying to figure out to do the hard work in the right way to come out with different outcomes and that's that's some of the adjustments richard has a question when do we get the final knee ask we just got a draft uh i think it was friday that dan and i got it so they're gonna i guess uh and then there will be a final one that they'll give us and it'll be the same one that they're and they do some fact checking and there's questions april when we spoke to the gentleman yeah dr i'm sorry made a comment about the teacher doing a good job with the wrong students in front of you i didn't know what to meant by that well i think that you know we get into a style of teaching over time for a certain population uh in front of us and that population might be in my mind but not actually sitting in front of me the kids have different needs needing different approaches to how we're approaching them and how we uh work through their levels of instructional needs and that's why the psyop thing that we talk about is very good because it hits all means of just good teaching good strong pre-planning pre-planning all kids in germany that's what i mean ten years ago the population was distinctly different and some folks are still teaching that population i mean a school you gave a school district either you you you teach you teach the kids in front of you or the kids in front of you are going to be taught the way i want to teach you so who changes teacher of the kids the kids have changed the kids have changed and if we have the same teachers they have to recognize that we have to change all of us not just the teachers this restorative practice work that we're doing is to get the claim we need to change our perspective in terms of how we keep order and how we work with galaxies as well it's all changing and you know if we don't have a positive school culture we're not going to get these kinds of results no matter what we do drill and kill doesn't work but it's a balancing effect it's sort of a compromising level imagine a factor balancing effect between the student the teacher i don't think one's the students countries i don't think the students can drive the teacher the way they teach i think it's more reflective of what the student needs are right so we've seen a change in student need over time and a shift in our demographics for example an increase in the alarm population will require teachers to provide embedded language supports than an address addressing health standards in the planning in the classroom and the environment all these things that might not have been as prevalent 10 years ago but now are literally a required part of almost every classroom i think a simple way rich is that if i teach it or do i accommodate those learning needs to make sure you get it that's that's a big difference and she goes around the team we look at in terms of objectively what is going on that's how we're trying to discern what needs that we have so that we can build on the skills of folks without saying and these folks are doing what they think is right in some cases it's it's their plan right but they're not doing high leverage activities to get the youngsters beyond where their progress is moving but they're not getting the proficient there's too much time spent on repeating repeating repeating it not repeating they can't keep doing that the mindset is that you have a standard expectation in different ways it's a lot of work this is a tough tough school system to work in not the other case this is a tough tough person any other questions thank you [Music] cara's had to bump me in just getting her mind off her knees [Music] show any questions courtney do you have anything that you would like to add to um that was helpful so you can see the real balance so it includes the city's running appropriation in the report now on the mining detail so um i want to thank you for asking us to do that because it's more transparent and easier to read so um with the fact that our insurance is doing well this year um it might not continue to do well which i'll update you but um there's some pretty big structural gas in our budget that we've proposed to address next year that you know to bring to people's attention the subs that the fed tutors and the transportation are all being afforded because of the fact that we have the yeah i'll start with the city budget preparation calendar correction on that yes um yes so this one was initially published in the city that means um there's a minor adjustment so you'll note that tuesday it was originally in april april 3rd when the american central budget to the city council it's actually the latest deadline is april 7th that looks like they're using that um so it adds a couple days and then the first time frames across that is now may 5th this is the date that the budget has to be submitted to the council for final approval so as i mentioned in the last meeting that right now we've submitted the budget the mayor is in the process of reviewing all departmental budgets and we'll prepare his final recommendations on march 7th and then the rest of the calendar of holds our hearings will happen in the month of april um dr styles asked me to uh a cabinet to put together a one page talking points document that i'll share with you for your feedback within the next week [Music] karen you put that together yeah that's what that is right it's had a conversation with richard you know about some of the terms that were being kind of thrown around in the group and just trying to provide some clarity on what those are um you know we tend to forget throw a lot of things around um acronyms and so that was just a little bit of a helpful documentary sent to richard i thought it'd be helpful just to give it to everybody to describe some of the some of the lingo that's often used and sometimes used interchangeably which can be a little confusing citywide pto is march 2nd we have um we do the budget presentation um right yeah lunch i keep waiting for it to happen here so um we uh last week on the 20th we being um kevin went up with me and courtney we met the mayor and his staff i remember the legislative group they rolled their global one actually he called in and we went over our agenda i think i gave you a copy that for me they were they were open to our ideas we focused on the accelerated cost and they suggested to form a coalition uh because if we did it along as danbury they were a little skeptical if they would get the and so they're going to reach out to those legislators and try to you know get more of a critical mass so we can gain the money because there were some questions from this fall any money that comes through us and allen's lines gets passed through the board so theoretically he's at 2.7 so that's 2.7 2.7 so that's what we asked our our ass to the city was eight point three seven percent so you know that's 11 11 million and change so they were open to that um we also talked about the lease lend thing that they would consider working through the um through their bond group to alter the requirement that if the board decides to build something and instead of building purchase pre-existing building and then renovate that they would consider reimbursing the district for that um rehabbing of it they were happy to hear felt it's appropriate and we talked a little bit about strategies and the mayor apparently he's going back up there he's back up there lastly he's going back up this week there is an interest must be because rich just whispered in my ear that someone at the matrix said someone was coming down but look at the building from the state department which is i think a good sign right that maybe they're listening so that's a good thing so i thought the meeting was good um kevin you were there anything important well i mean i thought it was i thought it was a great visit um and given the conversation and the national visit portrait of the graduate visit um i think all the stars are aligning right now and i think the infrastructure because i heard the question actually the infrastructure right now if you like will ideally support the direction that the district is going in so it's i think it's a wonderful opportunity for us and i would just add one thing to our talking about that also um one of the feedback was well why us you know why would we want to accelerate among the other districts that are part of the alliance which is a good question which is why we're potentially in line with the milwaukee chamber because they're also growing and so we would just ask that they revisit because when that number was set for the ecs the clustering formula it was set at the fifth point in time and we've grown and we've grown in specific categories since that period of time so it would benefit a thousand dollar districts within alliance that are going and experiencing that growth since that present context so that's part of what we're pursuing there so they're all supportive for that yeah courtney on your list on the calendar we normally or there's normally a education i guess it's called a subcommittee or at our community or council yeah yeah that meets with the superintendent and staff i didn't see it on the calendar can you find out what date that is i don't think it is okay [Music] um i think like the following week and then two weeks after the presentation is usually the hearing so it would be sometime in late march it sounds like um if you've been listening to the news about all the work about the pandemic and then i think i said something more than last time article that said to me we had a quick meeting today um i guess i again into it you know we talked about we opened it up by saying you know hurricane's gonna hit we're gonna have some free planning just in case it hits so that's what we did today we sat down and um the state department um gave us a very good sense of list by bullet things that we should talk about and we went through all of them talked about you know what-ifs get some clarification lots of activities that we're doing we talked about unity of communications with the city we had good representatives from the city and um dr fong our medical advisor was here we had about what 20 people there this morning going through it and overall you know it was a good meeting as things progress things will happen you know we are looking at a number of things what if i think it's just good planning um you know we have no reported cases in january or state so far we're just taking just good planning about what do we do if from food services here transportation early childhood programs that were here um you know what we're gonna do with all of that and you have payroll to worry about if we have to close a number of things that we had to talk through i don't know if kim was the recorder anything they ended up no i mean it's a it's a big project and i think it's going to require a lot of collaboration with a lot of people to make sure we're learning our message appropriately um but it's going to be something that we're going to revisit um in the next couple of weeks probably in big chunks first the first priority really making the communication visa the next fight will be a series of tiered scenarios about what are we going to do with and i think the one thing i think today that i thought was the most important um was from the fire chief who said you know the document is important but really what's really important is that people are gathering on the table talking through what they would do if and so that's really where we're trying to get to because things that you don't even think about like food security for kids and frame release lunch or child care you know all the things that that you get to them but there's so many factors i think for us it's just really sitting in a room with a lot of collaborators and really thinking about what all like what all the pieces are so that we're not at the last minute i also spoke to the commissioner about um he needs they need to be thinking up there and what ifs you may recall two years ago when they made us make a case he went in the commission or expressed it to themselves in their planning out there you need to figure out if they have some mandates and impacts what we do here that they be mindful of days and makeup and all that stuff so someone steps out of control and lisa is here today she's very very good very knowledgeable uh dr fawn was here so our nursing staff felt real good about the meeting do you think it would be a good idea to send out a robocall that you had at this meeting and your car planning yeah it looks like a lot of people when the cdc made the announcement two days ago and told people to start thinking about your of awareness plan i think a lot of organizational schools in particular are having a meeting today tomorrow yesterday because we're starting to stand up courtney's daughter's preschool set one out so we're going to work on that tomorrow to get that first letter out i know mary mark posted today and his website are really long kind of tips like what can you do not even so much what it says what can you do wash your hands you know that kind of stuff so i think it would track that but anything that we put out we really are going to coordinate with um particularly release the morsi department of public health to make sure we're all setting the same thing um even if it's just to say does this look good and not look good so it's going to be hard for us to turn things around quickly but yes to answer your question i think in the next day we need to get something out that says we've had the meeting all as well without everybody just wash your hands um and work out together the only thing i just wanted to add is my question on both yesterday lisa and today is what wasn't clear to me before was what the information structure looks like and so what i what really calmed me down was knowing that um the the cdc is talking to the state public health organization which is talking to its local health organizations and so when we talk with lisa she's getting really up-to-date like to the minute information and is sharing that with us in real time so because you don't you know you're seeing news reports and even today somebody said well i heard about these kids and went and came back and so what we've got to try to do is not go down those rabbit holes and make sure that we're working with the best information we can problem is it's not going to be a really quick turnaround but it shouldn't be you know yes do we seem to be getting good information from the state because everything i've read is the cdc is a train wreck that their response in preparation is not there it's what we've got it's what we've got um and their website has a lot of information but they're doing three i think what she said was three times a week conference calls with local and state public health officials so i think they're doing what they can to be as regular as they can okay so i it's what we have i know dr fong had a little accident yeah so um oh i'm sorry one of the other things we talked about in the meeting is a lot of the news media is um projecting this like mass chaos mechanic you know and one of the things that we had talked about at length was really kind of creating calming people down to say you know that there are other diseases out there that are just as risky to the general health population or worse um and so let's just go across universal precautions just like you could do for influenza or anything like that so i think the first communication that goes out from us needs to really be a sense of like don't panic we're good and you know this is what we will do if right thing but that was you spent a lot of time about that i think it just makes people feel better yeah they know that you're working on this degree you know dr kevin on monday at the citywide pto whichever one of you go there it might be good to make a recommendation to the mayor's list or have a copy of it distribute it and pass it out through the city-wide you know is one of the things to alert them at least you have an audience there it starts the consultation of the the message getting down and using this one piece of paper that's spreading around the same message you know part of what they're urging us to think about is who are your readers or receivers of information because in addition to parents and families it's also our employees of all different categories um because you know they may be called on in certain circumstances do you think so um part of the outreach now we've kind of made an initial outreach to the teachers union but that'll be our work with the union leaders over the next couple of days just to sort of say here's what's going on so you know requests for information about why someone's out sick for multiple days seems different now in with these changed circumstances otherwise so there's just a lot of a lot of pieces of nothing to put but i agree like i think citywide pto building you know building principles are going to be really key to the communication effort um and just really thinking about who's going to be the readers or the receivers and again having to do with you know multiple languages too of course yeah the university today from higher ed recalling all students that are overseas we have one trip july 81.
Celts Thank You mr. president this evening we have one of our extraordinary students from shadow Ridge High School it's Ariana career Kirino from shadow Ridge good evening mr. president board members dr. callous and cabinet my name is Arianna Corrado and I'm a member of the district leadership council here last week DLC did have the opportunity and we met with our monthly meeting and we broke up into committees to further plan the district-wide Leadership Council we're still currently working on confirming guest speakers and activities for the event but that's all further to come we'd also like to take a moment to thank dr. callous in the cabinet for the continued support of DLC and a special thanks to mrs. Brown for all she does to coordinate our monthly meetings student update excellent thank you so much and thanks for being here for the update all right now we'll go ahead and go to eat you superintendent updates Thank You mr.
i've alerted them to sit down with the sponsor when viewing the terms and the media to be prepared in fact if it's cancelled so that's the only trick that we have going on there are that today when people feel [Music] prevention they're doing things and treating it like the flu this is similar so we have a protocol for classroom cleanliness we're going to purchase a few more machines in order to do it i'm looking that way because richard goes there let's ask the money tonight but we're doing things like that with the bus company just as if with the flu and then as the communications [Music] they did send something out that was useful in multiple languages too you see that we have in spanish i'm just trying to what i'm trying to do is not excite people let them know that we're being proactive [Music] is again it's not that they believe they're sick or infected it's that they're worried about how they're going to be able to leave some of those countries if they start closing their flights so i think it's really an abundance of question that way too because they're they're within their point of sanctions there are no confirmed cases in the mistake right now um so that's they're just trying to be really careful about making sure they can get kids back last night the community relations committee met we embarked on it was a good brainstorming conversation essentially we set out to establish a guideline of plans to take us through this year and next year however we stopped with basically the first plan of attack that we want to do for this year and that essentially has to do with the the budget itself getting the budget out to the public having the public become more aware of what this budget means so they can advocate for us the idea and the ways of getting this information out across different mediums whether it be newspapers whether it be electronic twitter facebook etc etc so i think we're on the right track what i'm going to ask is in addition to the five committee members on these on the committee i want to ask for at least three more board members because i think the work involved is it's going to be a lot there'll be some so if we get lucky there'll be some interviews or conversations we would have with different organizations if we get in there so rather than put the burden only on five people this basically is a district-wide type of opportunity and benefit so if i can have at least three more board members sign up for for this i would like that and they could sit down and start to get the work on our first come up with our first kind of attack as to how we want to do things uh i've asked kate to be the lead person on here only because certain personal things i have to take care of so she'll be the lead person anybody who wants to sign up who's not a committee member right now please advise kate if they can do it within the next couple of days because what i'd like to do is perhaps next week is to meet and we can start the strategy for what our plan of attack is and in terms of if we're going to do a letter writing campaign is to start to compose the letter and to see over what period time we want to do this campaign and the different media sources so i think it's it sounds you know it's a good task it's a lot of fun it's something we hadn't done before it's going to involve some creativity so if you've got good writing skills you know i think we could use that as well so you know i appreciate anybody signing up letting kate know and uh with that just be on the alert that next week try to put a meeting together sometime of course time is of the essence we're trying to get this out for as many people to to be aware as to why we need the funding understand it in layman's terms and in addition to advocating for us we can't tell them how to vote sort of twist it wrong and lead you in the right direction so i appreciate a few you know helps out thank you oh yes um so um i went to the ais bto meeting and my daughter is still there so i attended as a parent and where we uh board member um but i just wanted to mention um one of the things that i think this budget includes are all the extracurricular um activities and programs that are so important for a student's education that really one of the things that the cave convention was emphasized the connection that it builds for a child and their their own education where a student who might not be normally invested in their education this gets them excited and connected it also leads toward better attendance for school but they have ais has crazy aids which is a math program for younger kids math olympiads spelling club they have s back tutoring mad science bridge is a piece of book club coding club and special friends some of these are grants some of these are parents supported they have bad science which is a parent's pay to be in that program but um my daughter participated in the all city orchestra program that's done by our music department which is just always phenomenal this is our fourth year attending and that happened last night which is why i couldn't go to the community relations committee um but just really these are so important and i think this this budget sustains those things also the musical theater productions i know many of our middle schools right now are getting ready to um put those on in march um rogers park we received an email about hairspray school is also doing um beauty and the beast which is happening sometime in march early march time and those can those productions can be going to be bought online at the west con uh ticket box office thank you very much uh real quick two things remember when i was at the all city orchestra concert last night was as a dad because my daughter was playing it was wonderful compliments to everybody who granted it was a phenomenal event and the other thing is friday night park avenue did a family bingo night and there were probably 150 people give or take and whole families um kids that go to the school kids that don't go to the school it was a great event and it was packed so just compliments everybody there until the pto and rent thank you penny yeah just really quickly and most of us are there the site's meeting about three hours ago but just to judge all the folks that weren't there um we talked about a couple things um we just had a little bit of an update with the the specialist [Music] the national community is kicking off a couple weeks very excited to see what they come back with because i think it's awesome it's an awesome thing right behind on there um and we kind of just had a little bit of a discussion on the projections and data and access moving forward on all these crazy numbers that we've been getting and talk a little bit about the grandville option and that's um then we had kind of a brief discussion about like how we're going to start rocking her place with high school and options were there and [Music] you know the matrix was as possible and i think when the national community comes back um and we're still waiting on some data so i'll defer to dr and really start to kind of take a more pointed approach to our vision as a committee to start making some recommendations to the full board on where we want to go in terms of we have the numbers and we have this great you know sturgeon natural coming up and then once we have everything and we have everything here to really start kind of making some suggestions so back from the trip i think we should reconvene that time when we have all the data will be four to start thank you uh attended the broad view the school btl on february 13th because i mean just a handful of parents there but of course like you know most of ptos and parents are just working really hard uh dr edie thomas was there the principal and we were glad to see that somebody who's there from the work one thing i got from from the things they were saying that night was that this is their first year being totally free free breakfast and lunch and it's just really hard to predict you know it's hard to figure out the breakfast pizza and then everybody wants it but you know something else you know they might not and so they're still working on that and figuring it out um and they thought there's seventh grade sweethearts dance coming up and they need chaperone this eighth grade trip to washington dc at the end of march so i mean like we see sometimes uh unfortunately there's just a few like ten people just doing all the work but you know trying to recruit more people and dr thomas was pretty vocal about you know she had been to the media project park and just um she really i know the talks that she just like to add another building or another you know addition to uh middle school there she said you know the middle schoolers are just they're their own greed and they're very very uh hormonal and everything and just you know to have them all squeezed into a place that's just ah they did request the water filtration towel remember the water filtration yeah you know it's it's in the map i mean it came out of the city i know that's it that's right we requested it we're waiting for them to put a name but they need they have students the other ones um [Music] so that's it um we're working on getting our parents involved thank you thank you for all the community report we had our superintendent graduation committee meeting last week um thank you for coming out we will reschedule the meeting because we have set march 11th so i will be having a communication with our committee members to see who will be another day okay we're not going to go with marshall today um 5 30.
president I just would like to share that in just a few minutes the Valle Vista girls basketball team will be competing in the semifinals in the value Vista gym and we invite everybody after you're done here to make your way over there and support our young women and that's all I have to report awesome thank you we'll go to e3 governing board updates I'll second that miss Dinsmore awesome thank you all right we'll go ahead and move on we f1 so f1 we're gonna go ahead and the motion to approve consent agenda items I'll make a motion to approve the consent agenda items as presented with with an exception of item G five we need to amend that the minutes and reflect that Jen Tanner was not was sorry was absent so is just that something that didn't make it in there yes second motion made by Jen Leonard seconded by mr.
my last thing is who will be attending uh danville high school tomorrow for the portrait of regret [Music] what yes [Music] um the accident at south street school today and i've been thinking about this it's in there i know that you can talk about this but yeah is it any way that we just saw what everything else is going on and it's to make sure that our kids and everyone is safe is there any way that we can look at some type of parking or a different route that does and i don't have the mutual chinese case over there and so many parents walk over there and wait for their kids to come up because they don't want to get started but the traffic that's coming into the heaven one that onto the main street it's just so congested and the kids crossing their crossing at their own speed rachel's gonna because we're talking about i mean i can't think of john's name he's in charge of uh [Music] save the advocate out there temporarily [Music] you know as you're going to that bridge yeah remember the kid was killed [Music] but maybe they could figure you know people are driving back and crazy you know you have to slow [Music] okay
Pritchard yes Gordon vote motion carries thank you and now we'll move on to h1 h1 is policy governance board monitoring have adopted policy section 9 section nine point two five through nine point four nine dr. Kellis Thank You mr. president members of the board this evening mr. Dean will present this item mr. president members of the governing board dr.
Kellis and members of cabinet as part of the governing boards routine and yearly monitoring of policies we bring to the board the second half of section nine administration has no recommended changes any discussion all motion to approve consent agenda mr. president this is the first read and we'll be bringing it back for the next meeting for a second read in approval gotcha thank you alright we'll go ahead and move on to h2 the revision of policies seven point two five seven point two six seven point two eight first read Thank You mr. president members of the board mr. Dean will also introduce this item mr. president members the governing board dr. kelso members of cabinet this evening we bring four first read to the board policy seven point two five seven point two six and seven point two eight and recommended changes as they pertain to the district's leave policies these changes bring the district policy into compliance with federal statute while maintaining those statutory requirements of FMLA and other FLSA issues so all of these policy requirements are policy proposed changes are brought to the board for statutory compliance and have been drafted by our attorney mr.
McLennan again mr. president this is a first read for any questions or discussion and will be brought back with any requested changes for the next board meeting for a second reading and approval any discussion I submitted my questions and got the information I requested so I appreciate that excellent miss Dinsmore perfect thank you well go on move on to h3 high school summer school dr. Kellis Thank You mr. president and members of the board mr. Dean will introduce this item mr. president members of the governing board dr.
Kelso members of cabinet this evening we're excited to share with the governing board plans to bring back to the district ground summer school the district for the last several years has offered summer school only in an online version we are working to plan to bring the ground summer school back as credit recovery and an extension opportunity for students to make up credits in the summer be a small class sizes as opposed to having to do that online the ground summer school will be fee based and will will be will take care of the cost internally of covering for the teacher DRT as well as a security guard on the campus one piece that we will be or that we are looking at is the opportunity to have a summer school administrator as part of the summer school program and we're currently looking into seeing if that is will be covered sufficiently through student fee cost or if that's something that we'll need to discuss with the governing board moving forward but we're excited about the opportunity to have ground summer school once again and an opportunity for all of our students to be able to make up credits as needed in the summer through a fee based program that program we anticipate to be housed at Valle Vista High School in the summer it'll run for three weeks I'd be happy to answer any questions and mr. president we also have some information regarding our eighth grade summer program thank you dr.
Kellis additionally we are working and creating plans so that 8th grade will become a part of that ground summer school we are still looking to see if that will occur this year or will begin next year but the the intent of this ground summer school piece for eighth graders is that 8th grade students who do not complete requirements to be promoted from eighth grade will have an opportunity than in the summer to complete those requirements to go to high school if they do not complete those requirements or if they choose not to be part of summer school they will be retained in the eighth grade until they're at the point where they're able to move forward so we're looking forward to that opportunity as we forward both to benefit our students and our teachers as students transition into high school again that eighth grade component would also be fee based for students in title schools our title one program has scholarship opportunities available for them as well I would just also add that for the eighth grade program the question of whether it starts this summer or next summer we're deliberating based on prior notice to families that if we were to do this summer they might not have had perceivably adequate notice that their students could be retained in eighth grade or be required to take summer school so we're deliberating that question it may be pushed back to the following summer just to ensure that there's clear communication to all of our families right thank you any questions so for high schoolers will it just be credit recovery or could it be open to students who just want to get ahead mr.
