Humphreys any other board members have any questions for Albert mrs. Betts you may proceed okay great again moving into the structural bond projects and these projects are the responsibility of Albert along with Steve wells again these include everything else athletic venues classrooms flooring paint parking lots Performing Arts portables roofing school offices everything else that's not mechanical so again to summarize these projects the number of projects that are being handled we thought it was best to separate out the projects between elementary schools and secondary so if you look at this slide you can see the various types of projects that we're doing on the right hand side and then you can see all of the schools underneath each of the bar graphs across the graph so of the 27 Elementary School's we have we will be doing work at 15 of them over half the two most notable spend or the dollar amounts on this chart are at Ashland ranch and at Val Vista primarily those two particular schools will see a significant parking lot refurbishment which will include bus lane enhancements the bus lane enhancements are required due to Arizona Department of Transportation requirements associated with making sure that parent drop-off traffic is separated from our transportation bus traffic we'll get into some more details about that later in the presentation in the next slide again we thought it would be useful for you to see the years the years in which these schools were built so as an example no two year 1989 that particular graph is val vista lakes so again that's primarily the parking lot bus lane work that will be done there and you can see moving forward in 2001 again that would be Ashland ranch associated with their bus lanes as well you can see that a predominant number of the work is in flooring for all of those schools that that were actually built prior to 2000 so again Albert will get into some details regarding those to move forward now we wanted to share the structural projects at the secondary schools so we are touching every single junior high school in this summer so of the oh gosh how many are there six 11 11 11 secondary schools we are touching all 11 in some way shape or form except for except for Gilbert I so I wanted to share two notable on this chart so Canyon Valley and Highland High School so at Canyon Valley we based upon the approval of the remodel of the gilbert transportation center we did communicate out to all staff that we will be consolidating transportation operations at gilbert base so we will no longer be using power base for transportation we are going to maintain a couple of them for at least another year but generally speaking the Transportation Department will be vacating that property that does provide a potential opportunity for Canyon Valley and so we are working right now this is in development working at enhancing the academic opportunities or the educational opportunities for the students that go there they have been lacking science labs for some time and so those two are high priorities on the list the other notable bar graph is at Highland High School and note there's a lot of money being spent at on the restrooms at Highland High again and I know you all remember because Albert and I presented in September the the bond project completions that occurred last year and there was a fair amount of restroom work done at Highland High School last summer to the short timeframe of the summer and not being able to address all of the restrooms at Highland High we had to come back to handle the faculty restrooms as well as the locker room restrooms once those are completed that that should complete the all the projects that are needed at Highland High for quite some time so again moving to the the graph by year you can see that Island High was built in 1993 so it's over 20 years old at this point in time so having all the restrooms upgraded is definitely definitely behind and so we're very pleased to be able to bring that school up to standard and again the Kenyan value program started in 2003 so it has been in existence for over 17 years at this point and so it would be great if we could provide all of the educational opportunities for these students as we do our other students throughout the school so before I can yes yes if I could I think this would be an appropriate time for me to interject a comment as per our discussion this afternoon I think as you look at the array of schools that will be addressed both at the secondary and the elementary level there it is apparent to me at least that there is some kind of schedule that's already been either evolving are developed through your department and through mr.

Foley thank you oh my gosh I can't even imagine being you right now I don't know if you're sleeping because things just don't stop and thank you for all your work like you said our first focus was getting virtual learning up and running and you had to figure out that out and navigate that and then have to disseminate that out and then we have graduation and we're already having to talk about what is next year look like and we're playing the what of game and although Kathy Hoffman said that they're working on it based on what they've indicated I would say schools going to resume I can't promise but I would say schools going to resume as scheduled next year but it's going to look very differently and we're gonna have to figure that out and so we're trying to balance finishing up this year but starting next year already and so thank you I know you have worked tirelessly and I'm sure all hours of the night and conducting meetings and trying to figure everything out so thank you for all your time and effort we know that you're doing all this and while it teaches you teacher appreciation week is next week and we do appreciate our teachers and they're working even harder than they have and all the memes out there on the parents with having to help teach their kids we we have a even greater appreciation for our teachers so but I all the administrators to know and everyone know we know you guys are working even harder or no we know you're working longer and and your jobs have become so much more difficult so I wanted to say thank you to you guys as well and we do recognize that so and just on the tail end of that it's Gilbert's kind this week and that has been a a week that we have recognized for several years now and mayor Daniels has put that in so let's all take a moment even in the time of frustration and everything else and just to remember to be kind to other people everyone's going through different things and we're all going through a global pandemic but we all have different things going on so just remember it is kindness week in Gilbert and spread a little kindness and it doesn't have to stop it this week just saying so thank you so much mr.

Malanda and mr. Baldwin myself collaborated and we sent you a kind of a bulleted point narrative on the rationale and the usage of this at the school we're going to do a put a letter to get take that and develop it into a full letter to go to the state office of school construction grants management because while we were turned away essentially it wasn't for it wasn't positive regarding reimbursement we're gonna give it one more try and more accurately emphasized the school day program that would benefit from from the locker-room project and see if we might be able to get some reimbursement again no promises on that but please know we're we're still gonna pursue that the other thing that we could potentially consider in this is more of a Board of Finance decision but we are looking at a surplus of our budgeted funds at the end of this year in particular if the schools are closed through the end of the year now that money obviously reverts back to the town automatically you know if this was a project that we you know want to lobby for that money to be put towards this project you know it's something we can have a conversation about I don't think it's anything that would get us the full project but and of course the Board of Finance can have other decisions about how to use that yeah that's a good point Rosa because you know he take the existing $177,000 I'll be it it's not officially a non lapsing fun but we've all referred to it as that from a couple of years ago that's designed for the schools it's being being held there and if this estimated surplus in the 400 to 500 thousand dollar range if that comes to fruition you put those two numbers together and you're in the six hundred seven hundred thousand dollar area and you're getting very very close to you know halfway to the original estimate for the project so and maybe there's some balance to what Bob was talking about maybe you bond half and you're able to pay for half or something like that in cash maybe there's a way to do that again that's important finding its discussion and decision ultimately but again trying to be creative about how we might be able to afford this is this important project and keep the keep the obligation down for the community as best again I'll also remind us that any bonding that any project which requires bonding of over a million dollars has to go to referendum so that's got to be in their head as well here oh this is a big deal I like I like the thought of taking some of our surpluses and partially funding it with that and then but I'm not sure I want to pull that switch until we see how it plays out with the budget of the budget in the school year for next year and if any special ed needs show up again we ought to be able to drive to understanding by the fall but the but it's actually like that idea partially funded through what we've been giving back to the town and partially fund it with new capital then they might be able to put in six to eight hundred thousand dollars and the font rest of the funding comes from our under runs right and if we can't if we can't use the under runs for that then maybe well then then maybe we do it in the two phases over two years I'm not not the project with the funding in two phases over two years right you kind of wonder why we use a lot of those overruns for some of the investments that we like to make yearly dollar that's we're still talking about a net surplus and over that yeah okay right yeah and Bob is that true for this year as well to a million dollar ask needs to go for referendum or is that all suspended as well that's always the the Charter requires borrowing of over a million dollars to go to a referendum okay and it's not the size of it's the size of the borrowing and that's different than the budget process for this year that's correct okay and and and that's why they're always very careful about if you actually look carefully the in budget approval there's actually a separate line for bonded capital right and that's that so the town can vote for that as part of the budget referendum that way you don't have to go to the polls more than once so yeah I'm an ami what do you guys get to circle back with what Rosie you said before you know work how do we feel as far as do we want to push the project the full scope the project forward or do we how does everyone feel as far as I would like to push the whole project forward but it just doesn't seem feasible I mean in what we can also do I mean is you know we can we can say like you know we would like our first option to obviously be to take a look at what are our surplus is going to be and we would like to you know hopefully get a rough estimate I mean really the rough estimate that we have has got to be I mean good because the Board of Finance is gonna have to make these adoptions within the next couple of weeks before they start to have public hearings and stuff so you know having an estimate of let's say six hundred thousand as a net surplus and we can you know say ideally we would like to use those funds to put towards the project in cash and the rest can be bonded that's sort of our primary objective but if you know and of course the decisions there's but maybe as a second option you know we can say if that not something that you're willing to do then here's where we would go next which maybe would be what was a call option option 4 which was you know the bathrooms alternative which are non-negotiables yeah so so let me let me spin it a little bit Rosa what if we walk in and say we know this project is gonna have to be done we know at some point so the cheapest way to do it would be to do it all at once it's gonna cost more according to mr.

Dutch rollers Department and particularly as we look at the secondary schools at the high school level I think it's important for our community to understand that while there may be a school like a Gilbert High School out of the array or the cycle that it is not completely left out of any of the projects due to the fact that we may or we're looking towards summer school at Gilbert high school this summer and so we didn't schedule projects there it is in the schedule or subsequent years or projects that are necessary and worthy in the upcoming years is that a correct statement the full restroom replacement and other major enhancements are scheduled for next summer and you of course will hear more about that as we go into the 2021 school year for our community and for our staff to realize that there is a scheduled renovation and repair that's evolving and working through your department and through operations thank you that's correct thank you any other comments or questions or concerns here remember I just I don't know if this is the right time to ask as well but we will have more details the cannon Valley you're just giving us kind of a overview but we're not proving anything tonight you'll bring details specific details about any remodel for $800,000 dealing with cannon Valley that's correct we are just in the development phase we've done the walkthroughs to get our first quote and we of course are obligated to get three quotes so we probably will have that - you know earlier than a month from now thanks anyone else I I did question so my question was just about flooring can you tell us how often we're are addressing flooring particularly in our elementary schools so Albert can you help me with that answer I don't have to get the exact date of pulling it up right now I'm sorry but I believe we're at a it's every 15 years 10 to 15 years I believe for floor so a lot of these were behind so we're a couple years behind I don't think there's any such that that's at that right at that 15-year point so some of these have already exceeded their life expectancy as far as replacements for carpeting okay and then the other question is that we are putting the carpet in we find out to be easier and more less maintenance than the previous flooring that we have yes so yes we're using carpet squares that's more versatile as well as it allows it's a it's easier on the maintenance from a perspective of repairs stains accidents that happen throughout the years so that that allows us to maintain that that facility and keep it up to a higher standard all right thank you thank you mrs.

Glover well I think mr. with Tobin wants to say something go ahead one of the administration the principals have been personally calling each student's family and checking up around them and I think that that active tie this has gone a long way thank them for doing that thank you well I wasn't going to but since we're we're all saying something I know it's it's teacher appreciation week but not to go unrecognized it really really should just call it you know educator or educator professional week our custodians you know these kids these kids left at spring break their desks we're still full so the stuff has to get from the desks to home and then the rooms have to be cleaned and the schools have to be clean so the custodians on the front lines have really been working hard and keeping us safe and I will to fight for their to increase their wages but Paras have been doing odd jobs the technology department I'm sure is tired the front office staff who is you know in the line of fire the Transportation Department I understand has been pitching in wherever needed food services is still working all of these folks are still working there's work to be done and you know it would be easy to just stay at home and shut the door well it's not easy on paper it's easy but but they are reporting to work and they're working and so I appreciate all of them I agree with all everything that you all have said and I second that and but also those underappreciated folks as well thank you mr.

Chuck oh right if we spread it into multiple phases so ideally we would approve the whole project and put it in the bonding package and pay for it over 20 years or whatever your bonding period is if you can't approve that the next one would be approve option 4 in your in your budget as a non bye you know either bonded or not bonded at 826 we would suggest then we hold on launching the project until we see if we need to use the surpluses as going into next year and what the surplus is actually are and if there is sufficient surplus we would apply that to the project and and see if we can fill in the rest and if we don't have the surplus to be able to use then we'll go for option 4 right as a bare minimums that way you've given yourself many options which is we like we'd like the whole package second option is you put in the 826 I think with the number joy an option for that option for my number 8 so you put 8 6 in the budget and if we don't need that if we generate surpluses and don't need the surpluses then we use that to finish the project and do the whole thing that's so option one and option two both get your whole thing for deals and then option three is we you know it doesn't work out and we're gonna have to do a bare minimums right which is a lot that in my view is that's suboptimal by a lot oh I I really would like to go for this hole object in the logical way oh I just said just a different spin you guys put in 826 will contribute but the whole goal is to do the whole thing if we can yes and just so everybody knows I think we have to continue to remind that we do not have an answer on you know the assumptions we're making with the surplus is that school is out for the remainder of the year you know that large of a surplus in this current fiscal year I received a text from one of my colleagues there was one of those governor conference call for superintendents that I wasn't able to attend this afternoon and there is no word on reopening or keeping school closed for the remainder of the year you know no announcement or anything like that tonight so we'll be waiting at least another week to see if we find out anything and then of timings in a few certainly the situation yeah Kenny can you guys hear me yep okay I had some problems earlier today on a meeting so I think the way Bob laid it out good sense I just one thing that I just keeps on coming to my mind over the past week or so is that we we don't know what school is going to look like in September we don't know what we're gonna need we don't know what it's gonna cost it's gonna be a completely different reality than we used to so we just all have to know that and sort of accept that and then think about that surplus money if we could used it may be needed for that you know so I just want to remind us of that I mean I think we should get the hope it's really important but I've been really thinking about September and we I mean we're gonna have to start to make some budgeting plans once we get some ideas but that's gonna be really hard because I mean we can look at you know Denmark and China and these other places that are Oh what they're doing but we really don't know what the new reality is just start imagine it and then how much might it cost I just really just to accept it's not gonna be yeah you cut out a little bit at the engine but I think I got the gist of what you were saying and I agree I mean there is definitely a danger in sort of wiping out our our rainy day fund and we seem to have a lot of rainy days sometimes but you know sort of wiping that out too for a capital project so that's really you know it's a town asset and it should be you know managed that way sorry I agree with what you're saying - yeah I agree with you and we can't make decisions right now that assume we have the money and assume we want the money yeah like that's Jen's caution here be careful until we see what reality looks like yep that's why I think that's why I start with the ideal thing is fund the project carry forward as a bonded project paid for over 20 years let's just do it once and do it right I mean we can write it'll be cheaper better for the town all things considered is a marveland is still on or oh yeah there is okay um if they if so if nothing gets put back in additionally and we end up with a three hundred thousand or even the six hundred thousand which doesn't get us any any of the options could you just reiterate for me so that would be you know you maybe you could say something around like in progress or you know that would obviously be a little more finesse but yeah I understand you know I you know there's certainly obviously a level of frustration I think for me is that the high school principal right because there's there's things that I think need to get done across the board that being said I'm also I'm not looking to you know to demean or put down the town in the community because I understand this is a significant project it costs a lot of money to do this kind of work and so you know I'm just a priest of that we're trying to address it now so I think with finesse I absolutely can put something down we're in progress this is what we're working towards you know I think depending on what the the Board of Finance says you know I I'm also not looking to create an any enemies either you know I want to work together I think we've had a collaborative relationship in the past I know these are trying times for all of us given the current situation of the economy so I'm mindful of that as well I don't item I'm not looking to burn any bridges per se so I absolutely can put things you know we can talk about wording John and I could talk about wording what that looks like I would always send up a draft anyway you know as that time comes I think we can let this play out a little bit and see what happens but I can certainly be creative with how I do it and I can label it as a couple different things and really I I'm I have an English major a wife who's an English teacher so she helps me a lot with wording so we can find a way to get that done okay thank you does anybody else have any other questions joy do you feel comfortable sort of being able to summarize our conversations here yeah any questions you know that you know are we I mean I laid out is very clear and concise as long as ever I support that I think as long as we you know use Jen's suggestion of a caution of you know we don't actually know that we have that surplus and also you know again wiping out sort of our any sort of rainy day fund we could potentially have for a capital project is dangerous yep deadly you're mine is there a link to the meeting today yeah I should be up on the town website there's like a zoom meeting ID that you can plug in Amir it was respect earlier last comment we've never really had a rainy day fund until the last two years so opportunity to finally be making decisions based on rainy day funds but considering you know what we went through this year I said I understand I understand the point it's not it's not a entitlement and it's not a given right it's so I do love the thought of having a an ability to cover an issue if it were to happen but again we're not down to financing discussions right do you want to take the risk on the current year do you want to deal with a capital project I mean it and that's where the board I've always been a believer this is not a fight between the Board of Finance and the Board of Education this is a partnership this is what do you guys advise how do you make those trade-offs what are the balance points we need you know you mean they need to be part of this and and it feels to me like sa here's what we are willing to do and you guys on the board of IDI it's not that it's it's a project that needs doing right and and it's it's we need participation on how the best way to deal with it for the town not you guys and us guys type of discussion so I'm sorry I'm on I'm on I'm on a soapbox Joe and I'll get off of it I think to your point it's I hear what you're saying Bob and that's an important what I want to articulate to the Board of Finance is that you know this is a partnership and you know we want to see the project through and we want their help in doing that I'm working that out and figuring out the best way to do it right and for the town we want to do the best thing for the town right it's they want to do the best thing for the town so it's at the core that's what we're all about I think if we can get something done even if it isn't the full project which is well obviously what we all want if we can get option three done with just the bathrooms and the base if we can push that through somehow I think we should do that even though piecemeal isn't the best way to go or we may not get the weight rooms down the road I just don't think if there's a way to get something done this year I think we should go for it because if we table it that till when when's it gonna happen I think we certainly don't want to table it it's been tabled for so long right at this point I don't think anything will get done this year anyways because I still have to go out to bid correct yeah but I believe in I'll go to the resident former Board of Finance member on this one Bob I believe timing is an issue because regardless the board Finance has to approve or any capital by 30-day extension somewhere probably before early June or on or about early June and then that's it last they approve it so they have decisions they need to make now on what they're going to carry forward they're intending to have a public hearing online public hearing about the budget and then they have to approve a final budget so they have you know the Board of Finance has a decision process they have to work through and so where I think everything that we've talked about here tonight 10 to that and so just to be clear for everybody if things are not approved this budget season and it waits till this time next year that means in the summer of 21 there's no locker room project it weights all the way till the summer of 22 so it's just we've got to keep that in mind that's all right okay does anybody else have any other questions or discussion about this joy do you think you got everything you need and obviously you know I'll be there and anybody else that wants to sort of join in you know it was obviously more than welcome to as well but do you think you have everything you need joy okay any other discussion on this before this the last item on our agenda sorry joy did you say something sorry okay so without any further discussion um without objection the meeting is adjourned so thank you all thanks for our key of course hi guys tonight thanks yes

dick thank you okay so we have seven facilities for carpet and though all these are on the board agenda for this evening I'm at a cot a total cost of nine hundred and eighty just nine hundred eighty three thousand seven hundred forty four dollars and we are looking at that cost spread amongst two vendors so each facility with the exception of island high is it slated for a complete flooring replacement what that means is we do everything so the solid surface to the carpet so whether it's VCT tile or bid that's throughout the facility that that that flooring system is going to get completely replaced so as an example I have here is Superstition Springs Elementary the picture to the left we see their current corridor and it's they you utilize VCT tile or VCT flooring so what we're gonna do here is they the school co-op today they do like their solid surface flooring so we're actually going to start implementing rather than BCT we're gonna do LVT which is more of a it's still a solid surface but it's it's a the maintenance cost and the maintenance time that goes into that is its dropped significantly so it's not a flooring that needs to be taxed in stripped annually it's just a flooring a hard surface flooring that's durable that just needs to be mopped so that eliminate a lot of the costs additional costs that come with maintenance and in that service servicing that floor to the right we have a standard classroom with a VCT wet area which will remain VCT due to the sink in that area as well as what we'll do is take the carpet out and that loomed or rolled carpet with the carpet squares again like I said we touch everything and when it is a complete flooring project we touch everything in the facility and that goes as well for the multi-purpose room where we have VCT again this will remain VCT due to the sports linings the basketball courts PE activities that neither be represented on that floor but those will all be replaced along with the flooring so bus bus parking lots did anyone have any questions for flooring before I move forward thank you fine to proceed mr. judge over four bus lane and bus parking lots we have on the agenda tonight roughly 1.5 million dollars of bus renovations or bus bus lane improvement and parking lot improvements our largest points are Ashland ranch and val vista lakes and as we get to those I'll break those individual projects down I will note that the Sonoma ranch project is a large of complete replacement project and all of these are currently in development the larger larger scale projects because we're still in the design and budgeting phase so this this photo here represents val vista lakes in its current configuration with an overlay of the potential improvements or the potential adjustments to that facility so everything as it stands now all asphalt areas are currently slated to be milled and rework so in other words taken up and replaced with with new asphalt as well as to make these adjustments outlined in red and what we've we're going to propose here in the future is to add a bus lane to the far north of the facility which gives an independent entrance and exit for bus traffic as allows also allows some additional parking for staff what this does it segregates the bus traffic from the pedestrian or parent traffic and so the parents in the new configuration would come in from the south end and we're and coming around the up to the north end and loop around and then back out the south end which complete it would give them a complete divide between bus and parent traffic currently those those two vehicles the bus in the and the parent traffic currently intermingle so there's their safety issues at hand that that we're trying to correct with this this adjustment Ashland ranch this is more of a road restriction pick-up and drop-off issue so similar to similar to about Vista Lakes we have a high volume of parent & parent traffic for pick-up and drop-off so what's proposed here is I don't have an overlay which it's nice on the on the previous slide but this one shows if you could imagine here on the north north end of the facility north and northeast end of the facility we're gonna propose to put in a deceleration lane which will bring traffic off of the main road in front of school which currently backs up restricting residential traffic flow so that deceleration lane will extend from the north in down to the south end of the drive and then continue here towards the front of the facility and then into the parking lot to allow parents to to enter and then loop around and exit this this project comes with a couple options and deceleration is the main portion of it as well as the additional removal of these some of these South spaces to allow for an expanded bus and in traffic lane but we would also make these these parking spots up here on the east side so there would be no loss if anything we possibly have a gain of two additional spots as well as some wider traffic lanes and safer bus lanes renovations move into this we have so we're touching nine facilities in all thirty portables at each one with the exception of Neely Elementary we're doing interior exterior renovations these are all on the ball agenda for this evening we're looking at roughly eight point I'm sorry eight hundred and seventy five thousand for all renovations and interior exterior renovations that details exterior siding weatherization as well as exterior lighting roofing is reviewed at that time as well as we do the interior carpet as well as paint and other repairs as needed Neely Elementary is again the only exception that would be for for portables but we are going to do the weatherization and the siding for that facility this is an example of one this is a break or opening and the siding allowing for for intrusion whether it be just the elements alone water intrusion again which could create a larger issue down the line and then here's more of a wide area view of the portable just kind of giving an example some of the issues that we're having again just another another side of the we will upgrade the lighting as well as do weatherization around the door and exterior paint on them on the door or on the portable as a whole other structural projects this is Laurie wait doctor Senecas if I can can I ask a few questions about the portable this is I don't know if this is for you or miss Betts or maybe somebody else but um when I think about our buildings and space I want to make sure that we're really efficient in how we use our buildings in our space and when I look at putting money into portables I think to me in my mind the the point of portable is that it's not a permanent structure and so I just want to make sure are we really um using our space wisely do we really need I don't doubt that these portables actually need to be updates I'm 100% on board with that if we keep the portables around I just wonder why do we keep the portables around if we have space available schools or do we not have space I believe you know what I can give that to miss Betts or mr.

watt ovitch okay we're going on to any questions on our financial report from mr. Gary Holland no okay well I guess it's gonna be the dr. Foley show again and we're gonna go over all these calendars which is very exciting what's exciting is that this is a little bit more than just the oh can you hear me better now better okay this is a little this is exciting because this is a little bit more than just the calendars because if you recall my very first presentation to you with the high school principals was the whole late start late start late will late communication to you about the late start and we also had a subsequent conversation in our work studies about professional development opportunities in our district particularly from middle school so what's really nice in this calendar recommendation obviously we had already had the calendar for the 2021 school year but what we did it was made the recommendations and changes to next year's school year of course we say with the caveat this is what we know at this moment with our plans for what this calendar looks like right now what would our calendar look like so we made the changes to the 2021 school year keeping in mind the professional development plans for the district and actually building them into the calendar working with obviously I had an amazing calendar team but we also then worked with teacher groups professional development recommendations and the principles that we then brought to the calendar committee so this is kind of like a multi-faceted calendar approach so this is this is good so you will see that our calendar committee was large what's exciting about our calendar committee was we had principals and teachers community members board member we had but who all had multiple perspectives on this committee some of them were parents some of them were to presenting a teacher perspective or an arts perspective or an athletics perspective so we were trying to have an HR perspective we had a pretty large voices in the room here that were part of this conversation so we had a timeline you can perfect timeline so that you could see that what we did was started this back in January and then would bring had done some pre work with the professional development prior to that to bring to the committee from the get-go and we started working through calendars and we learned along the way we started color coding the calendars we were naming the calendars elephant calendar you know that we had some years that calendar really worked nicely other years not so much but anyhow what we're bringing forth to you are the realm of the changes for the proposed for next school year but I'm gonna walk you through those because that was already the approved calendar the year before but you'll see patterns and trends in the projected calendars knowing that today is an information item you I understand we found even that like there may be a an error a question you I will tell you so many eyes have looked at this and this is I'm glad we're doing this as a information item that we can do this as a consent so any any signs bring up but this will allow us to talk about professional development a lot of other things our community talked with about multiple filters multiple thoughts perspectives we would beat up what about we also had a binder or like folders that had every other surrounding schools calendar we had every other everyone who had a calendar out there what were they doing and how did they do it and we found that some years again the calendar played nicer than others and then started to pattern itself so some changes that we made one of the things in the consent agenda I think you just approved was the increase of a base teacher salary one of the things that we did was in July new teachers are going to begin a year early one of the things that the coaches and I have been looking at is the onboarding process and training for our teachers and found that this is a great opportunity for us to build in more quality intentional professional development rather than hurry rush and so this was one of the opportunities that we took was adding by raising the base we added one day for new teachers to higly then you'll see that in August we started one of the things that we did with middle schools and this is where you'll see there was big changes the world for middle school was not equitable in professional development and has some unique things happening to two big things when middle schools only had the school the district-wide professional development days you know Elementary's had every Wednesday high schools had late start and you'll see there's a chart later that shows the great inequity we didn't replicate at the secondary level late to start Wednesday's that's not going to work at the middle school level what we found though was that we didn't want a weekly thing either for k-6 what we found though was that what talking with teachers and administrators ideally we wanted to do in every other week early release similar to the Elementary's it virtually gave the secondary world the same amount of time professional development wise and we also added more time in some of those were making sure all of our early release days were k12 days so that we could do district systemic things all at the same time so some more consistency there so the other thing that was a big thing in middle schools was parent-teacher conferences were so early at middle schools and the teachers say truly even elementary teachers on the calendar committee said I have missing kids all day and I don't know that I would be ready to really have a meaningful parent-teacher conference that early and and the thought was they felt like they really aren't as meaningful as they could be quite honestly if we have concern we're already in touch with you about that let's move them back just to the week before the not the same week but the week before so it was more like the same amount of time to really make our meaningful time with you if we're gonna early release you let's make that a meaningful conversation when a prior to they felt it wasn't so we thought well here's an opportunity so you'll see that in August a middle school professional development was today was added and then we moved those conference you know again move the conferences back to September so again separate bullying can I just ask a quick question since we were just talking about the parent-teacher conferences did they indicate if those parent-teacher conferences are necessary meaningful we at one point had parent-teacher conferences at the high school level and they didn't really happen and from middle school parents I hear the same thing is that they really don't happen the teachers only meet with the students parents who have a D or lower and that [Applause] they're just scheduled by request so I in my opinion I would hope if our students have and I know it's early but if they're carrying a D or enough that that conversations already occurring with the parents so I I mean I guess my question is kind of is a middle school parent-teacher conference two days necessary and before you answer could you man was your permission may I just add something to that I jumping ahead but you said something it looks like I I was not aware that we also do of middle school conferences in February and I was going to ask the same thing like did they say that we needed both of those is it worthwhile so your question is great I would just also say do we need to have that twice a year what is the feeling from the middle school teachers okay so the feeling for the middle school teachers was they wanted to move them here's the here was the conversation and we can also take this back to the committee because one of the things you'll notice that was the timeline was that we would bring it to you have a conversation take any questions concerns back to the committee discuss and again if we need to extend out the approval we can't here's what the teacher said the teachers administrators had shared with us because we asked these similar questions one they won the conversation was yes we should be having those those conversations with parents much along the way if there is concern there's no reason why we shouldn't be communicating with them that historically that they felt that there had been the real there are some parents who still want that time that they that they wanted to be able to schedule it if there was concerned so they wanted to build it into the calendar but I will I will second the conversation being that yes that it isn't everybody it's those who they're concerned about or a parent who wanted to schedule a specific time with them they felt that they wanted to keep it but I think it says historical there is a historical part that was a carryover from when we work 8/8 and parents were used to having those parent-teacher conferences that continued that there was still that can that the teachers felt that this was a historical poet component that they felt that the community thought was important to still have and the teachers would still do not that if you had concern about your middle school student you couldn't communicate with the teacher at any point and schedule a meeting to do that so the the they didn't think that taking it off was something that would be something the community would be wouldn't want that we would still want that time carved out they just wanted more time so that if they had them that they were more meaningful so that they kept that what had historically been on the calendar moved it to a time that was similar to what Elementary had done so if the question you would want the pose back is do you really feel that it is essential to have to have these at all then we can have that conversation with our team well I know also through conversations with parents of middle schoolers one if they do have a student that's struggling and maybe they're on an IEP so they're struggling in multiple classes that the parents having to visit the campus multiple times like they can't schedule they don't have the ability to schedule back-to-back with different teachers so they may have to schedule on one day at this time and may have to schedule a later time and which could be disruptive to their work schedule and make it difficult when they are having an early release would allow you to do it you could schedule I will meet with this teacher and then we'll meet with this teacher well and the other thing is when I have seen what these sign-ups are is there are no evening that they are only doing them up until the time school gets out that even our Elementary's are expected to do at least one evening for those parents and when I have seen you know a parent say look this is my only time that I can go it's only until the school day ends so at that point is that conducive because then they're having a phone call meeting anyway at that point so III think there are several things that go on there that if we are going to continue and I hear you because in that cait's and I don't know anyone I was here when we were had k-8 and I had kid in a k-8 and you know the the parents came in and I believe it's how I've even seen with the sixth grade teachers those who rotate is they're not in their classrooms would I have experienced is there like in the cafeteria and there's you know the math teacher the science teacher and the language arts teacher and you kind of go boom yep your kids doing this moving me up your kids do it I mean so you get to speak with all three of them right in a row and be able to get that feedback if your kids struggling in anything and if they're not you can be like great we're we're good so I think that if we are going to continue in middle school because it is a very different situation than when we were in elementary that we do need to look at those times and the availability and make sure they are conducive to parents and that there is some of that availability because like I said I've had parents log in because a lot of them used this genius and things like that and there is nothing available in the evening so then it goes back to the perception of our community and and like they were afraid of if our community not wanting or still wanting them well now our perception of the community is they just want an early release they just want to leave work early because they they don't have anything available later on and and I'm not saying that's perception of all community I'm not saying that's a flat-out perception those are some people's perception in the comments so we just need to make sure it's conducive to the early releases and to our parents and things like that so president Canada members of the board it is the the recommendation of the district office of that for our middle schools on the early releases that one of them would be a four-hour extra day so it should go to 8 o'clock in the evening to make those accommodations for those parents that can't make it earlier in the day and then Friday would be an earlier release day for those teachers to go home and also the expectation from the district office would be that if a parent cannot make it on that thursday or friday they could set up an individualized meeting that should be accommodated by our staff between before school or after school so if those if those expectations aren't being met we will talk to the administrators to make sure that that's clear I'm going to have a middle schooler next year which is shocking but from that perspective I think it's very good that we're having conferences we've heard from this board I've heard the parents come in here that have middle schoolers and they're concerned about the bullying they're concerned about the things so I think that's a great time to bring up those concerns if not way before but it's a great way to have an open communication and dialogue with those parents and teachers if something is happening in that class where a parent might not feel comfortable emailing a teacher having a conversation one-on-one and figuring out why little Billy is struggling in math class might end up leading to conversation so I actually agree with having conferences just because of how much I've heard in this boardroom about bullying in that state and maybe helping those parents figure out why Billy may be suffering in math class or whatnot I do think that's a good time to bring that up I remember from calendar committee I sat on that committee I remember historically the reason we did conferences for middle school that early was to allow changes to happen to schedules but a lot of the parents and teachers in the room decided that that probably wasn't happening that parents had already changed schedules way before that August was it originally August dr.

Martin I the large I guess Sierra the portables are at elementary schools which again are being utilized but I believe if Jason mr. Martin's available he could probably speak to that better than I can good evening Laurie good evening governing board you are you have you have a good question there Laurie when I look back 10 years ago you are correct that many of our facilities had higher student enrollments than they do today but over the last 10 years to the needs of our schools have changed and in particular we've added a lot of different programs across the district and OH many of them are now located at every school some of them k12 some of them Elementary so for example you look over the past 10 years that the number of special education rooms especially the self-contained rooms that we have added at all of our facilities a manís era preschool continues to be strong at the elementary level there's you at almost all of our elementary schools we have at least one or two classrooms that occupy that space and 10 years ago we didn't have as many of those we've had a huge growth in other preschool rooms such as the building blocks in the K prep rooms and I counted the other day we now have 26 of those rooms approximately across the district so almost one per elementary school that used to not need a space in addition to that we've added instructional coaches that also need a space and of course this upcoming year we are adding social workers and most of the social workers used to practice in a small office but many of them now are are needing a classroom space because they're working with these are either a large group of students or an entire class of students with some of the second steps and other preventive curriculum so when you look at that even if a school were to say stay the same maybe they had 600 students at one of our smaller Elementary's 10 years ago but now and along with Title Title Services some of those schools now have added four or five different support services that need a classroom for that so that's why you haven't seen some of the portables gone away mr.

Foley but they had already changed it way before that August 8th anyway so to move it back and let that conference be just an academic more conference than a change of schedule conference if that makes sense to everybody sitting up here well so I still still don't understand about this second one in February but so maybe we could come back to that but if you're asking my opinion I would I would I would ask I would go if it were me I would ask the committee like do we really need this one in a second semester yes or no and if you don't then then you don't but my experience as a junior high teacher is you know you've got a 150 180 sometimes 200 students is impossible to get everyone like like like a kindergarten classroom of 30 parents they come in so it was it was parents that we we you know needed to see probably and I don't know that it made much of a difference ultimately but it was offered I agree with what you said miss Wilson about having an opportunity to do to do that face to face but when you talk about historically we've always done this that is absolutely true and that predates the online gradebook which we have now it predates email which is people still do use not kids but people still used and then phone and texting I mean we're readily available so to take you know for the part of four days to the I'm not sure that it's worth the effort so I would give them the opportunity to ask and ask the community do we really need all of these at the middle school level um I got would say no but I'm open to whatever they say we'll do is we'll take this back to our middle school administrative team and teacher team who was part of making some recommendation for the middle school professional development opportunities and then also the calendar committee to talk about this because I will tell you middle school is the area that we've made the most changes because prior to this middle school had the fewest amount of early releases there or changes start times of any of our groups so middle school is our is our problem child on the calendar committee for us to relook at so I think that again the movement was let's make it so it's more reasonable for these meetings to be more meaningful if we have them there's also the concern of if we have them how are we following practices because remember this year was even weird one of the weird little changes we made this year was that there was an early release and a parent-teacher conference and we tried to separate them but the teachers so no no no no we do early release and stay later that night but that's not what the calendar said so going back to what what is our practice why are we having things do we need two sets of these what we'll do is we'll bring this back to that group and bring their recommendation back to you for further discussion hearing your perspective on this information that we've shared today thank you dr.

Dutch over and myself have looked closely at these over the last few years through the enrollment management process and we definitely see that when we're working with Rick Grammer our demographer that in the next five to ten years I would say that probably up to half of the portables probably will not be needed based on today's enrollment and based on how we are doing with class sizes and the various support programs that we have in the district but definitely you bring up a good point I think it's something that we can continue to address in the enrollment management committee going forward but I also want to say I think Albert this is the third summer that we've done some renovations and I think some of the portables I saw two or three years ago are in pretty dire need and so at least we're trying to be proactive and preventative before they get any worse shape I mean keeping those portables up to up-to-date and also as attractive as possible for our staff and for our students and Families just out of that Jason on a personal note definitely you know being around it in and out of the facilities throughout the years I mean it you get a sense of that the students and I guess I say the majority of the staff filled in exile in the in the portables because they're not as is inclusive are they weren't they didn't feel as they're similar to the brick and mortar and that's the approach we've taken to these portables as we do the upkeep is to make sure that we're getting that cohesiveness between the the main building as well as the portables that they all just go there and that learning environment is is a nice comfortable space for the students and the staff to be a part of mr.

Foley I think one of the things that I remember about them and I could be wrong is that they were around a holiday weekend so yes so that they would stay Thursday night late leave early Friday but to have Saturday Sunday and Monday but that's not what the calendar said but that's not how it was supposed to play out so I appreciate you kind of moving them down definitely longer period of time to let the kids really sink into their classes and again schedules can be changed early on at the middle school level of somebody's in the wrong level so and we're only getting better at how we're using our data to do a best fit for initial placement and whether and yes I'm confirming yes so you're not having so that's a good thing so that we're not waiting for a time to move it so we're getting better but I think we're multiple factors here were what what do we have historically done what makes sense and so great conversation will bring it back to those members and to the calendar committee and then we'll come talk about it the other thing I was going to say was yes I agree with mr.

Martin I I have a question to piggyback on what mrs. Wood said we have looked and we are looking at a district-wide facilities plan to make sure that we're planning ahead and using our space effectively we're still in the planning process for that I presume correct yes we are you need to continue mister we have other structural projects again that that falls under the structural department with myself as well as Steve Wells we're looking at multiple projects at roughly 1 million dollars district-wide multiple facilities so we'll look at a couple of those a little bit closer so right now the Junior High athletic surfaces we're trying to maintain a standard for four playing surfaces as well as safety which safety again is going to be the the biggest key to to these upgrades in junior high school this is the the long jump it you see the runway there is a is a rubberized surface but if you look in the middle there's a few little white splotches as you get closer once you get close to the area you'll notice that that's actually the rubberization has worn away and that's down to the concrete again creating a safety hazard for athletes so we had looked to rubberize that area similar to what we do at the high schools and then give this a its current rubberization or refresh this again is another long jump pit and as you see here again this we'd like the standardization to be rubberization across the board all the the five-foot portion at the starting point is rubberized but you have a bare concrete all the way across which again they only utilize a small quarter-inch roll out pad during events we like to see these rubberized again to give a more of a stable plane and safe playing surface and this is up-close of that that takeoff area and that middle piece there you can see the rubberization is a little bit darker but everything the lighter gray or the lighter black is actually asphalt but they're coming off of here this is the long jump or the high jump it at Highland Highland junior high school again it is rubberized already but it is deteriorating and failing leaving uneven on safe playing surface for athletes we'd like to see that I'd like to get that rubberized to create a stable surface this is Greenfield junior high which just has an outline of where the the high jump it should be and they currently utilize that air that grass area again is it's not a solid surface we were susceptible to possible injury due to the divots whether it be a gopher hole whether it be an issue with the grass as they they go to make their approach for their event and then this is a South Valley junior high it's just an overall top view of their jump it as well as down to the bottom left their long jump runway is there any questions on any of those and we'll move to the mesquite high school door hardware this is its current state the door hardware is more of a equipment failure the doors have given us issues as far as locking some of the exiting devices and these are all exterior doors these are where we have the main issues at that facility due to due to fixture failure and we're looking to replace those dead to add more of a secure perimeter to the facility I'll hand it over to Bonnie for the Future bonds okay before before we go on to the next real topic I just wanted to summarize the projects as it relates to those that we are asking you to approve vendor and the spend this evening so the mesquite high school door hardware is on the agenda under consents tonight these the athletic surfaces I think are are pending have all the quotes for that yet we have the fencing upgrades around the cafe area at Greenfield junior as well as at Highland you can see that those are expended on this chart so that's not that's not included in tonight's agenda but you can see at Highland High the faculty in locker room bathroom renovations we are asking for an approval request this evening as well as the Pioneer Elementary roof replacement that's an approval request and the courts he'll interior and exterior paint approval request so those are all on the consent agenda this evening in addition all of the portables we are requesting your approval with Belfour and that all the parking lots are still in process we will those back to you and finally the Superstition Springs flooring project is under consents this this evening as well as all the complete flooring replacements throughout the school district and these these requests are for to vendors both flooring as well as wholesale flooring then finally just really quick on the mechanical side all of those projects including the lighting as well as the central plants have all been approved and awarded by you so I just wanted to make sure it clear to you which of the projects are available for you to approve this evening so before I go into the discussion about the recommendation for an ex bond sale I wanted to give you all an opportunity to ask any further questions Bette thank you for that summary board members do you have any questions additionally I just missed Betts I do believe that we have one item 5.12 approval of Roadrunner paving for parking lot upgrade or Sonoma ranch that's correct thank you so much yep I missed that one thank you very much not the other parking lots that we that you discussed that's correct and then just for details on Sonoma Ranch that is a complete bringing down milling out the entire surface and relaying it for Sonoma Ranch and that's due to the age in the condition of the parking lot in the condition of the parking lot yes thank you thank you mrs.

Glover that maybe just the one set of conferences instead of two sets because by February we know where we're at this is that if you needed to meet with individual students you would be scheduling to meet with those individual students because by then those relationships have began and been you know a longer term well and will in our data beyond guide how many how many have we been scheduling one has the historical need let's let's look at a lot of information to help make an informed decision about what we've been doing and really proposed the before thank you I appreciate you taking that back within the only classes changing if the semester are there electives right so and it's not like even get any brand new yes the only thing changing is their electives not their core classes and so with this we are still keeping our late start with our high schools one of the things that want to do is continue now to keep in mind a lot of work has happened on on redefining our professional learning communities the work that we're wanting to do with that how are we high schools wanting to keep that time dedicated moving forward with our growth and opportunity now the world of our teams meetings are in our tool that we're using link zoom we've been popping in and out of lots of those they're wanting to continue with that structure and not change it again we're only getting better at it and so that's something we want to continue into next year with professional development opportunity with our high school folks he also c2 as we move through what we did is any time there was a k-8 release we made it a k12 release so that we could increase if we're going to release let's release and use these as district for professional development for so obviously in those days are not late start there early release but that added more so we're doing a nice combination at the secondary level of frequency over duration but with more awkward opportunity for duration for our bigger issues or regular pieces we're working on and I think that's really important because a lot of our bigger kids watch over the little ones on those early release days so it's important that they line up in there together so I do appreciate that looking at this calendar yeah spring break or fall break comes early well yeah and then are you looking at the 22 yes yes just the quick note on that fall break we need to add the language in September because the next school year yeah / 2021 we just have indicated fall break is October 1st through the night not to have ember in there so that's new that was where it was weird birthday I'll tell you Angelica every year we were like do we move it back where does it fall keep trying to keep balance on the numbers of the semester thank you that's a good catch for 2021 and actually we got we were laughing because someone found on the existing one that had been approved 31 days so not this one doesn't but one did so by the end of this year seeing squares and numbers and oh my I'm sorry we tried to align with some of our neighboring districts because we heard that that was a hard piece a lot of parents have a kid in a neighboring district as well so we had Dale line and sometimes our neighboring districts didn't align with each other so it was like a pick and choose on which one we were gonna go with and keeping the bays balanced it was long long meetings and dr.

woods anyone else please that's pink okay so as I shared the available bond dollars to date are roughly 9.2 million dollars and we have about almost nine million dollars of request to take us through the summer leaving us about two hundred thousand dollars in existing bond proceeds to be used for next year so based upon that information and the continued needs of our facilities here in Gilbert I just wanted to prepare you for the fact that a month from now at the end of May the financial advisors will be here with with me and help to make a recommendation to sell forty million dollars of bonds so eight million dollars from the November 2015 bond and 32 million dollars from the new authority of member of 2019 we hope to close in August or September by delaying this to next year we have an opportunity to make sure we are controlling the tax rate and the impact on the local taxpayers hearing in Gilbert Public Schools so the reason why another reason why we would like to take this opportunity is that there's continued historically low interest rates which we believe will save our taxpayers significant dollars as an example in speaking with the financial advisors over the last couple of weeks Scottsdale and some other school districts throughout Maricopa County have actually completed their sales and they've seen a total all-in cost interest cost of less than 2% which is really remarkable one point seven to one point nine percent obviously the lower interest rate decreases the amount of interest that's included in the levy of the debt service every year on the bond side in addition we are continuing to pay off debt I have shared this a couple of times the fact that Gilbert has chosen to amortize debt over a very short time frame ten to fifteen years versus the normal 20 years and that has allowed us to pay off existing that much quicker giving us an opportunity to fill in that with additional debt again at a lower cost and a lower interest cost and then finally other items that are impacting us positively such as the qualifying tax rate decreasing decreasing by 12 percent going into the 2021 school year I know that that's on the primary tax rate bond John Kundera tax rate but normally our tax payers are looking at our total school tax rate in addition the transportation revenue control limit levy I had shared that with all of you the last at the last board meeting regarding the fact that we overstated transportation route miles that that led to us having to do a 15 15 to bring that levy down so that additional one and a half million dollars will not be levied going into next year and then also the assessed value in Gilbert in our Gilbert School District is increasing by six point five percent going into the 2021 school year and finally we are continually making sure that we meet all the obligations of the November 2015 bond pamphlet as well as the two thousand pamphlet and I will be sharing details about all of this with you over the next couple of weeks prior to agendized it at the end of May I also wanted to share with you that at any point in time just because you approve the authorization to sell the bonds does not mean that we necessarily will move forward if the if the environment is not in the best interests of Gilbert public schools at the time we will delay the sale to later in the fall or possibly next spring so with that Albert and I are prepared to answer any additional questions and that does complete our report for this evening thank you Miss Betts mr.

Foley did a great job facilitating that meeting we had a lot of teacher voices and perspectives and we'd send them back okay go talk to your friends go talk to your colleagues go talk to your neighbors what do you think what are your opinions what are your concerns so here's the deal calendar committee is hard to make people happy - well even with our state representatives they're trying to mandate when breaks are because people are having their kids in multiple places which is the joy of having open enrollment but because you choose to have your kids in three different places it does not mean your calendars are gonna line up it's awfully thoughtful I just have a different opinion on that I think it's awfully thoughtful that we looked to see what some of our surrounding areas we're doing and tried to line them up but I'm always of the opinion we need to do what's right for our district and this information is available and then people can make their choice from there so thank you for letting us know that and and that was awfully thoughtful of you guys well we tried to do - as our working drafts actually had the number of school days that we had in each month so we were trying and what did it do this semester what would it do to a grading period what what does the number look like what if we did this it was it was good so here's again the summary for September October November you'll see you I kind of broke out what we did that what were the tweaks that were made for each of those months where we added or changed again like that October one went from a k-8 to a k-12 so I you can keep going whoever's running those you're doing a great job while we're waiting for that and I'm sure sorry mr.

duck over and miss Betts thank your staff your presentation as always was quite thorough and well done I have opened the floor for questions from any board member please dr. Santa Cruz I have a question go ahead miss something Thank You mr. Betts I just wanted to say thank you for the presentation as dr. Santa Cruz said it was very thorough I appreciated seeing the pictures and going through everything very carefully so we understand how these bond dollars and the capital dollars are being spent and seeing that things are being brought up so that students are safe and have a good safe environment so thank you I know it was a long presentation but very very thorough and a lot of detail for us so they thank you any other board members with questions or concerns comments I don't have a question I don't have a question I just have a comment and that's the fact that having been in Gilbert since 1971 and going through all the growth I totally understand that from like 89 on that's when we built all our schools one year after the other so we have things that are going along now and we have to deal with them and I appreciate what you're doing and I think that you've got a good plan about the schools that were built you know first and then the ones next and I appreciate all that you've done because we all know that you know after 30 or 40 years and then home or a school things go wrong and we have to take care of them and I think you guys have done an incredible job so some of the questions just a comment and I thank you thank you miss you jetty miss would any additional comment or question Thank You mrs.

Glover if you were gonna say this professional development has been a huge focus of this board and it's been very important to us and as we have worked through it and saw the lack of time that we were allowing professional development and we have been getting there I think this speaks volumes to our teachers that we value them their time and their professional development and we really do want them to continue their education we want to support it we want them in professional learning communities we want them working across campuses our middle schoolers working with middle schools teachers our elementary czar our specials are we are one collective district and mr. Witte ovitch has said it many times we are Higley unified and so I want to say thank you for not only taking on the calendar because that's tough as it is but you moved on this quickly our calendar for next year was already approved and we did not need to rush to make this change to get our middle school teachers professional development in this calendar but it is important to us and we want our teachers to know that and what our expectation is so for you to take on not just the future calendars but a current calendar that was already approved and ready to go and I so appreciate you putting the same importance and emphasis on our teacher professional development and recognizing we needed to do something like you said we had late conversation about our high school late starts and we got that in place fairly quick because again we recognize that and then we had to get on Middle School but thank you because I think that this really speaks volumes from an administration standpoint that we moved quickly we recognize we we did have a group that was missing this opportunity and professional development has been extremely important and a direction of this board and part of our strategic plan so so while we were waiting for more of the slides to come up I wanted to say thank you for putting that same emphasis and importance on it we are doing with our action plans and our that we needed to have that time so this this was a good time to do that so you'll notice that as we rolled through there again the big theme here was the tweaking of those professional development days either k-8 to k12 or middle school adjustments and so then you'll see that the proposed calendars fit that somewhat to the best that we could but here was one of the things we had Brian do for us so that we could say okay taking a look at those calendars with adding those days what did we do to our instructional minute so the good news is is that we far we far meet or exceed the required minutes the high school one is unique because of the way they report it to the state the 912 for credits for us those are typically your seniors those are typically your seniors who have four credits again we're meeting or we're we're beyond the minimum there which is great because you have testing and other unique things that happen there so we're fine with the instructional minutes by adding those days or for professional development and and more consistent the other thing is is by having that it allows us to be very intentional about our site PD days align to your action plans and our district implementation for curriculum and systemic improvement so it allows us to be real intentional for the planning of that so that was one of the reasons why we want to just prescribe that across the next slide you'll see is we had asked and I think president Kaler you had said and it was an orc study it would be nice to see what does the PD look like so what you had was what was this year's with next year's with the tweaks that were made you can see our poor little our little green was this year so middle school glared that it was we as a we as a group didn't not have the same opportunity as we're focusing as a district with our administrators on professional learning communities working together we need to make sure we're equitable in the time so you'll see that the secondary now was our proposals although it's unique how they're doing it they're proposed time is more similar so secondary has more consistency in elementary and we have more overlap time for systemic so this is what it looks like now a time down to the the minute with our Brian Campbell helped put this together with making sure this is what it looks like one of the questions that came up next slide is what happens because our heart we talked in our committee about what others some give the Wednesday off before Thanksgiving some don't there was the question what is our attendance look like you know before Thanksgiving and here was what our real numbers looks like for the last two years so it looks like and again ours is a half-day this is what it looked like so again this information was not making recommendation making a change based on this number but this was what the number looked like when when we talked in the committee and again Brian baby's beautiful little charts for us so here here's the I I hear very clearly and going back to our obviously for next year we need to fix our calendar making sure we capture Spring Break where it falls a little in September we also will have a conversation with our committee or about the middle school conferences [Music] on multiple levels so what we'll do is bring back those recommendations and changes to the next one as an information item and then we can bring it back then as a consent dr.
