Castellano will give us some feedback on what we can do to improve okay I truly do appreciate it thank you guys for everything thank you and staff particularly mr. Castellano for making this first venture that's for us we are now an item point we're known item 10 movement for adjournment a motion for adjournment Thank You Jenny is there a second I was second down and we are adjourned I can turn it to mrs. Wilson for holding a board for adjournment right I miss Humphries mr. president carries five eyes thank you mrs. Wilson thank you dr.
jillee was by himself correct that is correct Washington DC was the - I I'm sorry was it no I'm sorry it's the national athletic directors question yes and Colorado was just scouting football correct by himself so these were not needs as far as traveling with a team except for the Florida trip correct right like all proposed travel that should have come to the board first okay just I wanted that clarification mrs. Wilson thank you is there a reason that we don't know why he didn't follow the procedures did he think that it was approved by us was this an oversight in his part can you answer that for me are you not allowed I don't know what the legal wall here is like I don't know what like did he think he was approved and we because on the sheets it says that he thinks he was approved in a certain date I'm reading it it's very clear in our board Doc's that that is a he thought he was approved did he think I can speak for the other two I'm not sure I'm actually so two of the three I let me answer number one Florida Florida was an approved trip and so I think is a misunderstanding that you you're not you're not on the list Florida their team has approved that you weren't approved on Florida so I've had that conversation the national conference is well I've gone in previous years in fact well you know we had the national conference here a couple years ago and but that's typically something that I've submitted and put other people with and so that there's a submission so he thought maybe you submitted it for the national conference and they thought the other one the Florida trip was submitted with his name on it as well Florida trip was approved just assuming that so the only okay so the only one that actually helps me a little bit clarify in my mind thank you do we have the numbers handy of the total of the Florida trip alone separately I'm sorry I don't have I don't have that oh it's if we could slide it down I could see it sorry six hundred and eight dollars and seventy eight cents I believe for just the Florida trip it's under issue six hundred and eight seventy eight yes can we separate the moment and I would like you to amend my motion I moved that the Governing Board approves the reimbursement of six hundred and eight dollars and seventy eight cents for out-of-state travel expenses for mr.
Aaron Dooley second do you second president Kaler's amended motion I mean I'll second it vote differently what else second did I just feel more inclined because I know this trip was definitely a team trip that probably was under the impression that he was approved to go on it so that's just my feeling right now I'm I'm the other two I'm more inclined not to approve but I am thinking that that having that athletic director with a team is easier for me to swallow at this point being that it was you know several months ago all these trips were taken does this make bias for the other two trips if we approve this one president Kaler members of the board the board can amend the requests any way they feel is appropriate but what I would say is the AIA a national conference is something that is regularly attended by most athletic directors at schools I just I just want to put that at that point it was it under my understanding that mr.
Dooley registered for that convention at the convention site or did he register early and plan to go I have no no knowledge of it mrs. darling reach had that information so he registered at the site and not prior does that cost more money to register at the site than going early okay thank you so back to my question does this make bias if we approve the six Oh 878 can we not go back later and approve the other two is my question we cannot because we've amended it is that how that works so what would end up happening is we have an amended motion for the approval of the 608 so what we'll do is we would vote on the 608 then we go back to the initial motion and we vote on that as well thank you for having events yes a hundred percent I just want to know exactly how I'm voting so there is no question in my mind how I vote so I just want to make it very clear technically we have so we will double vote on that 6:08 correct okay thank you I just want to make sure I know what I'm voting on because I want to do the community what I'm supposed to okay so we are going to vote on my amendment all those in favor aye all those opposed nay I'm sorry mr.
watt ovitch no no motion fails two to three so now I'm going to go back to the original motion for the expenditures of 2229 dollars in one sense for out-of-state travel expenses for mr.
dilly any more comments or questions before we have the vote on that all those in favor hi all those opposed no motion fails one for okay thank you moving on to six point six and that is the governing I make a motion that the governing board approve the issuance of classified work agreements with the step increase for the 2020 2021 school year second any questions or concerns on this step increase the stepping movement reflects an average increase of 3.4% for our classified non-exempt employees and I know again mrs. Martin's been working hard on all these changes in our feet my column fee schedules it's not a fee schedule our salary schedules so we appreciate your time on this do you have anything you'd like to add for us president Kaler members of the board um just to say that I appreciate your support and the whole classification and compensation project that we've been doing the last year a little over a year and our new schedule for our classified although still a little bit less than some of our surrounding larger districts where they're financially funded a little differently is still leaps and bounds compared to what we had before and I think the the concept of that average of that 3.4 percent is huge considering from my knowledge the classified hadn't received an increase to that size in quite a while and like I said it's an average but the step and the continued step for those individuals if they stay with us is only gonna progressively get better for them when they keep their tenure with Higley so thank you for your support as a board thank you any other comments or questions president Kaler yes mrs.
Reese it's just worth repeating one more time that is an average so some will get more some will get less but anyone who hears this they're just peruses and says hey you know we're supposed to get a three point four percent increase somebody that's an average some will get more some will get less so just it's worth repeating and I think the classified employees that I have talked to are so excited for just any little steps so that's the feedback that I've heard from many of our employees and so I don't think that we're gonna have the issue but it is good worth repeating that it's not a three point four percent all across the board so thank you absolutely and the fact to that I've communicated with the help of members of the Human Resources team is that in the course of one year calendar period five individuals have received increases although you know they varied depending on the number and where they're at in the bigger picture they've seen three different increases between July 1 January 1 and now June July what again pardon me so these when do these start going out that is what I feel like I knew that a moment ago and then I don't see it on the air absolutely mr.
Glover you know obviously with the status of our nation right now we had hoped to bring this to you in what we hit that was going to be an earlier board meeting in April but that meeting got cancelled so we're on a short timeframe but these work agreements will be distributed next week may fit great so all those in favor aye motion carries 5-0 I heard you mr.
moto Fitch thank you I hear your voice yes I hear him in a box all right now on 26.7 and sorry I just lost my page so I make a motion that the governing board approves UnitedHealthcare a vision care total dental administrators Oh CHS Inc Sun Life Financial optim trust mark and Allstate for Award for RFP number 19 - 0 6 - 24 second any questions or concerns this is dr. Glover I actually just want to make a joke I just realized as I'm sitting here how smart Darlene is I knew that anyway but but she always gives us a bottle of water so right about wonder how many our what are we two hours in like what this meeting yeah I see why you put this up there so but no if there's anything you want to add miss Martin's about about the such a gift to our employees that are medical did not go up this year and I hope that we are reiterating that to everyone loud and clear that we were able to do that for our employees this year just our employees absolutely um president Kaler members of the board again had we had our meeting in earlier April you would have seen this RFP proposal the formalization of accepting all of these contracts then in the bigger picture because as you may or may not recall I believe it was the end of February which I came to you and let you know what we were getting in terms of renewals and more the insurance committee was going so I'm thankful to the Insurance Committee I'm thankful for the support of the board and the opportunity to look in going out for a new a broker hub International has been wonderful in working with us and has really made the process seamless in the bigger picture and really has negotiated and negotiated hard for the numbers that we're seeing so I think it's wonderful that out of all the contracts and the renewals were going for and there is no increase as mr.
Glover mentioned at that last meeting that doesn't mean we're not stopping and looking at how we creatively look at the cost and how we look to implement some other things that hopefully can save cost in the future whether its plan designs other components but here in the big item the only thing that was going up as we mentioned before was the vision and it was minimal it was cents on the dollar so that's wonderful for our district especially given the increases that we've had the last couple of years yes thank you mrs. Martin's and this will be a three year contract with a one-year renewal for the next two years just to clarify that for all those listening okay we're gonna vote all those in favor aye aye motion carries 5-0 okay items for future we have obviously a you know things are still in limbo as far as our meetings concerned whether we will be like this again in in May or have mr.
with Tova join us maybe I'm not sure but we've got revised budget coming up gifted in talented technology update how we prepare students for life beyond the athletic handbook review and student athletic eligibility and clearance requirements and I would just like to add dr. Fowler when we do our athletic handbook in case I'm not sure I sent dr. Thomason a email to make sure that we're going to include all the the fees the tax credit I just kind of hold the whole the whole finances of our sports as well in that and try to encompass that with our athletic presentation thank you anything else president Kaler yes our Sarah is there any plans are we that statutes going in and Hinkley high he's not gonna be coming up on her agenda soon I think they were waiting weren't they yep president Kaler members of the board right now I've asked everything to be put on hold so I'm in earlier this year I did request that the whole process be started over again so because the proper paperwork and filings had not been done properly from the beginning and so I went back to the group and said right now everything is stopped on hold we need to start back from the very beginning and start everything over again and so there they do have some other paperwork filled out they have not completed everything as required but when that is done then then we will move forward with what some of the issues with those what those requirements are but at this time because things had not been done properly from the beginning I have stopped the whole thing and asked them that they start start over on the process any other future agenda items mr.
Witte ovitch anything well thank you so I move that we adjourn this meeting second all those in favor aye Hart motion carries 5-0 thank you and have a good afternoon
[Music] Hey okay I would like to welcome everyone to our Board of Education meeting tonight just a note to the public who might be viewing us on YouTube there is a document on our website right below where you click to get to YouTube that allow you to enter a question on a Google Doc and I'll entertain those questions just before ending the meeting tonight so if you would like to pose a question there is a doctor a document that you can complete and you can access that from our website let's begin by doing the Pledge of Allegiance I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States and thank you mr. fanon would you like to read your statement yes I would mr. román Gina thank the New Jersey open public meeting law was enacted to ensure the rights of the public to have advance notice of and to attend the meeting of public bodies at which any business affecting their interest is discussed or acted upon in accordance with the provision of tactical aside Porter vet has caused notice of this meeting to be published by having the day time in place they were posted the new officers of the borough clerk for a library for a rec department you office of the Board of Ed and the offices at schools numbers 3 4 5 6 in high school on January 13 2020 and notices were forward to reporters of the record January 13th 2020 this is an official meeting mr.
Roman Jean I'd like to take the roll if I may okay mr. Capano here mrs. Fredo here mr. Garcia here dr. Pantoliano mr. ring court with the ring court unmuted he's muted no my my my my our computer will just zoom I can't we see you yeah okay call your here mr. Shelley here Teddy Teddy here I'm sorry no word okay okay so what just once again like to welcome everyone to our meeting a couple of items I'd like to go over before we look at the consent agenda and also to the public who might be viewing our meeting tonight there is a copy of the consent agenda right in the same dialogue box where you clicked on to to view the meeting through YouTube one thing I'd like to point out to our our board members is a virtual schooling I have to say that we're in our sixth week of virtual schooling and things seem to be going very very well when we came back from Spring Break all students pre-k through 12 are now on remote learning using you the Chromebooks or a device that they may have at home so everyone has access to the Internet and all of our staff members are able to communicate to both parents and students virtually and like I had said it's our sixth week I think it's it's not an it's not an easy challenge especially for our staff members who are preparing lessons each day but the feedback that I'm getting from staff and from parents who have been emailing seems to be very very positive and I think everyone despite the virtual work learning working out very well looking forward to getting back to school as soon as possible some of the schools in Burton County high schools are honoring our seniors because graduation is up in the air in terms of whether or not it will be in person or virtual schools in Bergen County on Friday nights beginning this Friday night those schools that have high school field lights are going to light the lights from 8 p.m.
to 8:20 in honor of our graduating class the class of 2020 because we don't have lights at the high school field the borough has been kind enough to allow us to use the lights at school number six so we're going to light or they're going to light the lights every Friday night for 20 minutes and that will honor our seniors from from the class of 2020 I'll get some publicity out on that and mr. Pinto will also to let residents know exactly what the meaning of the other lights are so that should start this Friday night just a reminder the school budget election is about mail ballot only as we were talking before the meeting most residents probably received their ballots today so I'm encouraging everyone to vote we and please return their ballot by the due date which I think someone said was May 14th but the sooner you get it back the better so please vote when that ballot does come in the mail you'll notice on the agenda tonight we're going to be appointing some of our staff members for our summer school which begins June 29th again that's tentative depending upon the governor's decision as to whether or not we will be back in school and we will continue virtual learning if summer school is not at school because schools are still closed the other option would be to look at as a virtual summer school similar to way the way we're doing virtual learning right now so the governor is supposed to be making a decision on May 15th once he makes a decision as to whether or not schools will be open this school year at all and what he allows us to do as far as the summer is concerned then we can make some definitive plans regarding summer school but my hope is that if it's not in person we will be doing some kind of virtual summer school to support our students speaking of virtual events last night we had our very first high school on a society virtual virtual induction we honored 6-7 seniors who are graduating in June they were inducted last night into the Honor Society there are about 30 juniors who would normally have been inducted last night and because they'll still be with us next year we're going to plan on an October induction for those students to honor them we also have some other events that are upcoming our middle school Honor Society I spoke to mrs.
Forster today and we are we've begun planning the middle school Honor Society which we will also do virtually probably in about two weeks and I'll get the dates out to the public into the board once we finalize that I also spoke to Dave rafita our athletic director and we're going to be planning some type of athletic Awards early in June to honor the students that are in our winter program and our graduating seniors who would have played this spring so those those are some upcoming events and academic awards we've contacted the majority of people who are kind enough to give scholarships to our students all of our students have applied for most of the scholarships and everybody's willing to take part in some kind of virtual event so we will be doing some kind of academic awards before the end of the school year to honor those students who we would normally honor I believe this year was May 28th we were going to have our academic awards so we'll do something virtually around that date as I said before middle school high school graduation those are some events that we will be planning but once the governor gives us some Davitt some clarity as far as schools being open or closed we'll move forward with some of those more planning on those events I just I also want to point out that you know that we've been giving out free and reduced lunches every day since this started even over the spring break today the last couple of days correct me if I'm wrong Mustapha no we've given out somewhere around a thousand breakfast lunches per day to students who qualify for our free and reduced lunch program so I I think that's really great and I want to commend quantonium who's been basically there every day making sandwiches and they were there every day from 12:45 to 1:45 and parents and students have had the opportunity to pick up breakfast and a lunch every day and they've really been doing a great job and we've seen the number of people coming out increasing every day I think we started with 200 the first day and we're up to a thousand right now so it's great that we can we can do that yes mr.
ohm you know just do we have had our highest total today of over 1200 okay well that's great to hear and I think we have about 1800 free and reduced students so it's about 3/4 or 75% of of the people have taken advantage of I think that's great and I think it's great that we're able to do that and we'll continue doing that until we're either back in school or when school officially is supposed to end which is the third week of June before I look at the consent agenda there's any any questions from the board members about what I just discussed or maybe something that I didn't discuss excuse me no it's the other way around last night we inducted seven seniors who are right the card the students who are current juniors will be here in October so we can do a live induction the seven seniors got excuse me we are because the gate graders are going to be in the high school well that's not normally the way it works if they're if it's a middle school on a society and again I don't know all the bylaws of the Honor Society but I speak to Mary Forester but my feeling is that their eighth grade is they're going to be graduating they're going to be honored at their graduation as honest Society members and I think the feeling was we'd like to do it while they're still eighth grade is before they move on some students may not be going to our ninth grade they may not be going to our high school or they may move and we may not have an opportunity that where we have an opportunity now something I talked to mr.
forth mrs. Forster about yeah I like I said I have to ask her about I don't know if there's any guidelines regarding when a student has to be inducted but I'll find out I'm not sure but I'll find out and I'll get the information out to everyone thank you okay anyone else okay so I just want to take a couple of minutes just quickly to go through our consent agenda I'll just note what page I'm on at the bottom of page two we are appointing Janelle Duvall as a new social worker added to our child study team become effective September 1st 2020 as you know we spoke about adding two team members a social worker and a psychologist because of the caseload that our child study team has so Janelle will become a member of the team as a social worker pappa page three Lucy Canopus is also being appointed as a member of our child study team she's a certified school psychologist and she will also be beginning with us September 1st 2020 starting on page three we are appointing a number of teachers I'm not going to go through every teacher but there are a number of positions in summer school that we are filling on page three we are appointing our classroom teachers on page four we are appointing our special education teachers who will be working in our summer school special education program we have speech therapists at the bottom of page four who vide speech services to our special education students during the summer top of page five we are appointing our ESL staff for the summer who will be providing services to our ESL students a school nurse in the school first aid first people that we are hiring one one stationed at school five four our pre-k program and one at school six bottom of page five we are appointing a number of enrichment people we have a summer enrichment program for three weeks these people will be teaching a variety of classes we're in the process of making up a brochure and again that's a program that we may or may not be offering bottom of page six continued on to seven are a number of special education aides that were working classrooms during the summer then we have our art teacher phys ed teachers we have a grad point program which is a a program that we use where students are using Pearson grad point for credit recovery we have three people that are working in that program one on the high school two in the middle school we have our director have a ninth grade orientation program that we run each year and hopefully again it depends on whether or not schools will be open and then we have our seventh and eighth grade math and English teachers for students that are taking summer school courses in our middle school and as I stated and as stated in the resolution the resolution does state that if summer schools if schools are closed summer school point these people I will notify the staff of that schools again are closed we may be hiring a majority of these people back if their programs can be run virtually because we would like to offer programs for our students over the summer who do need the support we also have a weightlifting program that we run every summer for our athletes and again that's a program that can't be done virtually but I probably would be up in the air policies and procedures were just approving the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association approving the fact that we're joining that Association we have a resolution on the Virtual Learning Program this is something that our attorney mr.
Fogerty sent me this morning that we just included I think was either late last night or this morning just something that we understand to the state stating when I submitted our remote learning plan to the Cary and when we officially began our remote learning program so the program was submitted a March 13th and our actual virtual learning program started on Monday 16th so that will be something that will be missed our founder will send it to the state's buildings and grounds which I have unfortunately nothing financed mr. Albano yeah just a couple of resolutions I'd like to quickly point out mr. román gee no we're approving our safety grant was for about 24,000 dollars that will be downloaded tomorrow to complete the application process we will apply that grant funding to school some interior cameras at our number six school well we are renewing our applications for number three and number five school temporary classroom units we have to do that each year and we are approving Liberty mechanical this could be doing the boiler replacement projects in the summer of this year for schools number three and schools number five that's pretty much it mr.
