Sal so as many of you know what we typically operate with assistant principal and principal positions were the two panel interview system and it includes a wide swath of administrators and teachers staff members all of whom contribute to this vetting of candidates for the assistant principal position typically we require white writing samples and we have a pretty rigorous questioning policy in these panels and this year was no exception to that rigor it was a little bit different given the kovat crisis we collapsed into a single panel so fewer participants but none more enthusiastic ever than the panel that we had this year that also included our board member mr. D'Silva and some administrators and teachers as well so people who run the gauntlet here in danbury certainly have to go through their motions whether they are new to us or whether they are interims as our two candidates this year were and it was just a nice opportunity I think for each one of them to showcase their achievements from this year and before and so we'll turn it over to dr.

Kellis and all of the teachers that have been tireless in making sure that their students had an extraordinary experience and what is now known as the online experience it's been compared several times to homeschooling and I don't think it's anywhere near homeschooling because of the amazing staff and the excellent way that things were handled and all of the things that went on behind the scenes up into providing all the equipment and the computers and every schedule and every possible help that we could possibly have so I definitely appreciate you on that and mr. Leonard if I could just also put a plug in for all of our support staff and our administrators they equally did an extraordinary job and we could not have done it without their support thank you how much really I don't I don't think right down to the the general janitorial and the kitchen staff I don't think we could have done it without every single person pitching in and doing a little bit more than is normally expected in many different ways than they probably ever thought that they would be working so we definitely kudos to them and thank you for everything that you've done first this year and continue to do for us as we close out an extraordinary and different year for sure appreciate you and things for that update we're going to move on to d2 governing board updates all start had the opportunity to go to the Vista today and just record my brief section of what will be the alternative graduation so that was amazing and humbling all at the same same point I didn't realize how much I took for granted all the hard work that goes into putting all these things together as well as all the people that make the magic happen behind the scenes and help everybody in every situation that was amazing to see the people there and also just kind of reminisce a little bit on graduation and how it will be different but still very impactful for those seniors barring any of the government's changes and hopefully governor Ducey is in a good mood when he continues to allow us to operate and hopefully we can all stay healthy also had the opportunity to do an audit that was interesting but good I think we're it was a financial audit I think we're in good standing there and so completed that as well as it was good to see some some of the happy faces that I've missed so much by being socially distanced so it was good to run into some of the principals and administration at the Vista so definitely enjoyed that we'll go ahead and go around for the updates will start with gen Tanner do you have an update for us see here um not really just an update just an observation I I think I said at the last meeting I'm super impressed with our staff and how much that they've gone above and beyond to just reach out to students to help the families as much as possible during that time to give support and just try to help our kids feel like they're missed and and loved and I especially have seen some amazing things happen with our seniors I I really feel for them because I know so many of them want that traditional experience of a graduation and and kind of that last senior year that they feel like they missed out on and I really feel for them they never got to kind of go and just go this is my last day this is my last day I'll be with my friends at school and kind of had no idea what was gonna be happening and so I've seen some teachers staff go above and beyond to really try and help these seniors feel appreciated and help them know that their hard work through their public school education experience was not gone unnoticed and I just really appreciate those who have who have done that to help them feel like during this time when they kind of feel so separated from everybody to feel that inclusion and to feel still the love from their teachers staff and things like that so I really appreciate those in the district who have gone way above and beyond to help them feel that so that's all I have think you appreciate that and definitely echo that sentiment as well miss Densmore do you have an update for us um just you know for what what everyone else is saying about everyone going above and beyond having a senior this year that's been incredibly important to my family and just having that those extra special moments and and you know even more deliveries and sign deliveries and senior gift deliveries it's been absolutely incredible and the learning experience is definitely not stopped with Dysart so I appreciate everything that all of our teachers are doing and all of our staff are doing to make the learning experience continue through the end of this year so thank you amen thank you for that and let's go with mr.

Reese I echo your sentiments it was surreal watching employees with Ghostbuster looking deodorizers and wiping down everything in between but I was so thankful that we took all the precautions that we possibly could I even heard that some of our schools they're not even doing the cap and gown portraits which Lou coupie came and did portraits for us and they've only done a handful of schools already so we have done everything we possibly can in our power safely to honor these kids and I know that that's not what every parent can you know wants to hear they might not think we did enough but you know we can still just do the best we can in this crazy world we're in right now so and I just want to shout out too because there's so many unique cool ideas that have come because of these situations we have parent we have teachers doing virtual cheer tryouts and I mean dance places have opened up to have one person at a time do their routines so that they can still have a dance and they've just we've gotten so creative in the educational world to still honor students I know that Sossaman is now I think if they're doing their drive-by I think it's a drive-by excellence or something I mean there's just so many things out there I can't even keep track of what's going on at every school to honor the little kindergarteners and the sixth graders and the eighth graders and like I feel like we've gotten so creative and I'm just so grateful so thank you okay we're gonna move on to consent and I move that the governing board approves consent agenda items five point one two five point ten second I just want to point out on five point six we had Barrett financial give a $50,000 donation to wipe out all of our lunch debt and it came to fruition because an employee was just thinking what could we do he had a student here at Higley and they they forego their bonuses as employees so that they could provide that $50,000 and so I just want to again thank them so much on behalf of the board and our community and yeah that was a big chunk of change thank you any other questions or comments on consent mr.

Hoyer think though I echo the comments that everybody has made especially what miss des Moore just said as far as those special moments I know that having a senior and being with them during this difficult time that is a special moment that you'll be able to talk about for years and I know it's a little bit difficult for all of our families but everybody has stepped up and worked hard and they will remember this for years to come so congratulations on everybody across the board I just wanted to say that I had finished up with the four or five remaining CIP presentations the school's continued they diligently they continue to be excited about the progress that they've made and also what areas that they need to focus on to be successful for the next year we all know that this was a difficult time to monitor everything but it was they know what they need to focus on for next year attended a couple of webinars of course they all relate around to the kovat the relief funds there was even one that was creating a digital content and one of the folks that was on this was our former director of public relations act fountain and this had to do with engagement during the köppen 19 so that was an awesome thing to sit through and I just wanted to give a shout out to Ryan McGinley he continues to do a fantastic job with videos and if everybody hasn't seen the Dysart hero heroes tribute to our wonderful staff members they need to see it it was great and Ryan the camera do continues to do an awesome job that is a lot of talent right there and that's Thanks and save the best for last miss Richard um everybody's pretty much kind of expressed my sentiments so just to just to briefly recap again just very appreciative of our our staff members our teachers everyone who again unexpectedly came together and just built this whole online experience kind of talked about building the plane as we're flying it so a lot of appreciation out to our employee groups but also just wanted to thank our entire Dicer community even just outside of our district operations because really this whole community I mean the whole state really but our just speaking in our community you know we've all felt the impacts of this Kovach 19 and you know from our our business owners you know our our government officials our retirement communities everyone has just reached out to to support one another and to support our community again even like what we're seeing with the adopt a senior program that's really taken off and I sit as well just complete strangers helping one another and it's so heartwarming and it's been so wonderful to watch and be a part of and just finally wanted to give a shout out to our seniors and and to all of our students really I mean because they've we talked about how difficult and the challenges that we've all kind of had to overcome building again this at home type online learning unexpectedly we've built it but these students have had to endure it and it has not been easy for everyone and they continue to persevere and do the best they could so from all of our even our youngest little learners our preschoolers all the way through our seniors good job all of you and just so proud of all of you that you made it we're where we finished up the year and we all did the best we could and I think some things should go to our students but again back to our seniors just again they've been doing a lot it definitely wasn't the typical senior experience but I would say from what I've seen and heard our seniors just really approach to these circumstances with so much maturity I just couldn't be more proud of them and they've they've really taken this unexpected turn of events and in stride and remained future-focused and just kind of continued to persevere and push through and so I just wanted to really say how impressed I am with them and want to wish them all the the successes that they deserve and they work so hard for and congratulations to the class of 2020 don't let it end it did you have something else awesome that's a great way to end it thank you so much for that implement and perfect ending to that section so thank you for that all right let's go ahead and move on let's move on to a one I'll make a motion to approve the consent agenda consent agenda items as presented second was that miss Pritchard yes excellent motion made by J Leonard so I can invite mr.

Glover thank you madam president just two things 5.9 I just have to make this comment that we all have to make in the in the hopes of educating our public so this is a screening testing of students policy I'm not arguing against the fact that vision testing is good for kids but you have the state government mandating something and and again not giving any money to get that task done and furthermore I'm I often hear people to cry you know how much we spend on administration but administration that the notion that that conjures up is that you have principles driving mercedes-benz you know and it's not it's all going to those administrative costs but this vision testing is it is it as an administrative cost and so we just have to keep that in mind I think when we talk about administrative costs and continue to help educate the public so I just every time if something like this comes up I will continue to to voice that and then the second thing is item 5.10 and it is a modification for the evaluation process and as you guys alluded to earlier we're finding out that some of the things that we thought were important aren't important or as important as we thought and there's things that we're learning about how we could do better and be more efficient so you know I just want to say a couple things about our evaluation process one I think I think we should I think we have agreed to at some point look at them more carefully I think it should be done before contracts are issued I think that should be a goal of any evaluation instrument I'd like to see them simplified I'd like to see them focus their support for young and new to the profession teachers and teachers who are struggling and could improve as opposed to may and and making it easier less work for qualified veteran teachers that we know are doing a good job I think our PLC's help all teachers work to get better and so you have PLC's but then you always had evaluations so how can what what redundancies are there that we can and possibly eliminate I think there's an opportunity to offer multi-year contracts for veteran teachers that are that are doing a good job and so we don't have to spend our time and effort and resources on them because we know that they're doing a good job and we can focus on some other people that we need to keep in the classroom that can improve and spend our money where it will move do the most good some of the instruments that exist across this nation are very cumbersome for the the person being evaluated and the person that is the evaluate or so making that more simplified and streamlined would be good I'm not sure that doing full-on or even we have we have something that it's a little bit less but it's not as less as I would like for some of the folks who are well anyway doing an evaluation a comprehensive evaluation for every employee every single year is really not going to have the desired effect we just don't are the people who do the evaluations don't have the time to to really do that effectively so I hope it's something that district administrators school administrators the HEA and our teachers can get together and endeavor to improve as time goes on Thank You mr.

Glover I think we've all learned that less is more right now in this pandemic that we have been able to continue to function and do a lot of things but less of them so yes thank you for those comments all those in favor aye aye motion passes 5-0 okay we are going on to our well this is just our monthly six point one monthly financial report any questions for mr. Hollin this morning we're gonna be hearing from him in a little bit on another budget item no questions okay dr. Foley is going to update us here on the updated calendar for 2021 school year thank you yes so I have a quick update for you on our calendar committee based on our conversation that our last meeting I took back the governing board's feedback particularly around middle school parent-teacher conferences PD the month of September and October where our end February we're needing to be reevaluated so if you'll slide to the next slide I'm happy to provide some feedback so following our meeting on Wednesday morning met with our middle school advisory group with our administrators to talk through the feedback so that we could bring a recommendation to the calendar committee the following week one of the things that we decided was really important looking at the data on the number of parent-teacher conferences we decided that we wanted to recommend to the calendar committee to keep the fall ones because those were utilized really well and that knowing that that that time was something that we felt was really important to have at particularly with that transition obviously moving it back and keeping it so it was at a time was more important where we had more information they wanted to keep it there the other thing we talked about was consistency based on the feedback you had provided on making the Thursday the later evening Friday you'll notice that these no longer backup to a three-day weekend so that there's some consistency between those parent-teacher conferences we also decided to for the month of September we kept the early release for the middle schools for this reason the hard part is the way we're doing the professional development elementary and high school there's isn't highlighted out because it's an every Wednesday thing keeping them consistent particularly with a break so that they had that PD we wanted to protect and keep it just so happens that that next year in that month is September with Fall Break falling at the end of it September is going to be an interesting and interesting month but we also decided that moving or taking away that time made middle schools just a little bit less and we thought that was not the best proposal so we decided to bring those recommendations to our calendar committee who then reviewed that and felt that that were some good recommendations so next slide so we made those revision updates that was a fabulous feedback in fact it led to some great conversation with both the middle school administration and teacher team and the committee and then we made the adjustments to the following calendars with that feedback so that that's what was updated for those calendars next slide what we did then was updated the instructional minutes because that put back some instructional minutes for middle school so that when we took a look at it it was more accurate so the way the calendar kind of crumbled next line and no change was made to the professional development so the thing we again feel really good about is the equity at the secondary level for professional development for our teachers in unique ways but consistently across and something we're proud of next line I just want to tell you again how much I appreciate the members of this committee again multiple perspectives were represented here including mrs.

Watts good evening everyone I hope everybody is doing well tonight good it's good to see everybody and see all of your happy healthy faces tonight I am wanted to take a minute I'm gonna do this a little bit teacher style so when we write report cards we always start off with all the positives that we want to talk about we couch in a little bit of the things that we want to work and get better at and then wrap it up with some positives so I want to start out with some really amazing positives that I want to tell you about our teachers continue to show their commitment to the community through their volunteerism their outreach and their generosity and so with this pandemic going on and a lot of our union sponsored events that were canceled we wanted to take that money that we weren't using on some of our events like our retirement end-of-the-year teacher celebration dinner and we wanted to put it toward a cause that would benefit our students and our families so our members took a vote and they voted to donate five thousand dollars to the community which all went to combat food insecurity in our community we donated a thousand dollars to the Connecticut Food Bank we donated a thousand dollars to the Daily Bread Food Pantry a thousand dollars to the new American Dream Foundation to continue the meal program on Saturdays which has been so successful and then we voted to donate two thousand dollars to the Broadview pantry and I just want to give a shout out to this group of teachers that has been doing amazing work at Broadview they were doing amazing work year round making sure the needs of their students were taken care of by setting up a little boutique in the school to provide food items and sanitary products for the students that needed them and hygiene products they were doing all this wonderful stuff before this happened and then the pandemic struck and they knew that they had families that really needed some support so they wanted to continue the program but the program has actually taken on all new legs and what they're doing is feeding approximately I think they're up to 35 families now on a weekly basis and it's a really an army of teachers not only from Broadview but from other schools as well that are shopping that are collecting amazon food orders that the community has donated and their dry these packages that they put together to students homes on a weekly basis making sure that students have bread milk eggs and basic essentials for them I I do need to mention that one of our wonderful paraprofessionals that broad the Laura Hollis actually really played a huge role in this because she donated the greenhouse Halas farm property in which she owns to make sure that all of the packaging and all of the food items could get sent there and it's sort of as kind of a distribution spot for all the teachers to collect and socially distance put these packages together so these are the kinds of stories that you know kind of warm my heart and show all the things that teachers do and to go above and beyond and show our staff dedication to help our families in need so that's some really good news some more really important good news to share was is that teachers are becoming increasingly proficient with their new technologies they're taking new risks to apply their new learned technologies and your strategies to their Google classrooms and they're taking risks to use all these new things like screen sharing and little little tools that we've all learned how to do in this pandemic to make sure that their students are getting the benefit of good quality instruction they're improving their engagement strategies and teachers are now beginning on mass to implement synchronous learning techniques which involve live meetings with their students and this is something many many teachers had been doing already but now it's going to be something that's going to be moving forward going to be part of our weekly routines it's very important and we need to make sure that we're connecting with our students to improve the social-emotional learning process make sure our students feel connected with us connected with their community connected with their schools so these live meetings are going to be serving as a really positive step forward in our distance learning plan so that was that was something that I really wanted to make sure that everybody understands the hard work that we've kind of put forward to make all those different phases of our distance learning plan come together and this is kind of the last crucial piece that we're going to be working on for the remainder of the year and holding on to all that new learning in case we need to use it which I'm sure we're going to in the months to come for next year moving forward I want to just talk a little bit about something that Commissioner Cardona said a few days ago when talking about returning back to school in the fall he said a return to normalcy will have to be a marathon and not a sprint and he also discussed of how it's not going to look anything like any of us are used to with that in mind I really want to implore and caution the board not to fall pressure to rush to return to school without a thoughtfully put together plan that makes sure that safety is paramount and that safety is the focus of our employees and our students I know that there's going to be a lot of push from outside sources and community members and you know statewide a push to maybe move forward and if we're not quite ready I'm imploring you to make sure that our plan is put together and don't fall victim to that pressure we want to make sure our students our staff are not sacrificial lambs just to jumpstart the economy our health and safety is the most important thing and you know we can't have quality learning and quality instruction if we're not healthy so we need to make sure that that is the focus I know we have a team that's put together to study the re-entry and I just want to also make a request while I'm part of that team I want to request that there are other teachers and actually all building stakeholders or district stakeholders employees at work that will have a voice in putting the plan together you have an incredible breadth Lake brain power that's collective and putting that rain power together to work on up we really need to use those resources for our safe return and I think that it's very important that you tap into the ideas and the experiences of our staff members I've already had many many emails from people offering suggestions collectively moving forward our state union has a set of guidelines that they're going to be really emphasizing for the going back to school process which includes things that we've already heard in the news and that we've talked about comprehensive testing for our staff members potentially our students as well contact tracing and track tracking of the virus requirements and this is really important a requirement for making sure we have everyone that comes back to school is wearing protective equipment district provided protective equipment is something that we're going to need to discuss moving forward we'll need to make sure that the district protocol for disinfecting and sanitizing is put into place and that the district has the funding to continue to do that while we still need to do that it's not something we should be you know falling short and worrying about back ordering of products it's something that we have to be prepared for and that we have to have it in place in order to restart school there are a lot of other items that you know we'll be talking about in the weeks and months to come but I just wanted to kind of put that in the mindset of the board of knowing where we're coming from that you know obviously safety is paramount for all a couple of things I think that our teachers are voicing we need to get better as a district and I don't think anybody would disagree about that is how we're reaching out to our families to make sure all of our students are engaged and some of our students who we have not been able to connect with or reach or bring in to the day to day distance learning process on the collegiate level we need to make sure that those contacts are done in an efficient manner my example for this would be currently teachers are making the predominance of all the phone calls to parents and the secondary layer would be guidance counselor's and PBS staff as we move forward we're gonna need to really utilize all of our employees to make sure that they're all reaching out and connecting with students and it's not just the teachers we're also providing instruction also providing you know writing new curriculum and - that's going to be distance learning appropriate teachers shouldn't be the only ones doing the heavy lifting with the parent communication so we need to come up with a plan district-wide that that improves upon what we're currently doing I want to just also talk about very briefly I know it's budget season and being that teachers are doing this extreme heavy lifting to make all this work happen I want to make sure the board is going to continue to support them by making sure that they have the resources and financial support to continue to make all of this happen we as a district we know this swirling short-changed here in Danbury and now more than ever we need to increase our educational funding last September ranking 169th we all know was an absolute disgrace but right now that disgrace has turned into an emergency and we can't continue we can't afford to fall further behind them we already are we've got to make sure that funding is priority and that you know we're we're shouting to all the people that are going to listen statewide in our in our community that ensures that our students aren't shortchanged and they get all the resources that they need I told you I'm gonna wrap it up with some positivity that was all my my couch things that we need to work on I have to say and I will give a shout-out to dr.
