Steinmetz roll call mr. Autry yes mr. ball yes is Muslim yes miss Martinez mr.

O'Reilly 7:45 schoolhouse lane when the board of education meetings are are held in the cafeteria high school auditorium members of the public commonly come up with questions that are triggered from remarks made by BOE members and/or superintendent during the course of the meeting in other word where it's one member of the public make it up ask the question and response from the board member or superintendent trio's another question from the member of the public how many how many the public asked questions on the fly when you think of them during the course of the Biot meeting during YouTube broadcast members of the public have been posting questions as the meeting proceeds why can't it be a moderator to look at this fee so the questions posed during the fee can be answered again board meetings are set up in such a manner that there's two points in time where you have one point of time where you can ask questions about the agenda and there's another point in time where you can ask questions any questions for the board we're not moderating a chat feed nor nor should we be moderating a chat fee but I think that would be against our meeting protocols and policies but most importantly how may the public ask questions that come about from the comment board board meeting we have the school to form you can fill it in any point in time that includes right now during the course of the meeting and I will leave another minute just to see if anybody has any other responses yeah I think then we talked about giving you know like three or four minutes you know like a good chunk of time so that anyone that's listening to this because I don't know they it could be delayed on youtube if you delay yeah to give them you know sufficient time to pose those you know questions after hearing you know remarks that have been made right I don't know that there is a workaround for that on the fly title thing I think we had talked Johanna about like leaving a five-minute window you know just to give them people five minutes to to go on and and you know and ask those right follow-ups right yeah but I'm saying like I don't know that other than that delay that we're doing I don't know of another like we just got another one from Lauren packs in Tempe Street did you get this trying to see how quick you get questions based off of Patricia's question so I would think that's pretty quick right so I think if we leave like a five minute okay five minutes from now till we close the meeting I think that should give people a sufficient amount of time to you know follow up with any questions that they might have or concerns you we have another question Patricia O'Reilly address we know did you see this question mark guess another question Nikki an old bridge why our pre-k Tisch teachers of assistance listed as underrepresented staff members they are listed as staff members it doesn't say whether they're represented or unrepresented are they aren't they represented any they are represented but in our agenda it just says staff members doesn't say whether or not they're represented all right to be clear they are represented oh yeah you we have another question John Campbell 22:30 Wesley John Campbell 230 Wesley Lane giving that schools close mid-march and leadership will have had six months by September to plan prepare plan a and B please describe what plan a looks like assuming plan a is to open schools with students in there currently close classrooms we are in the midst of developing our re-entry plan I do not have specifics on that at this point in time a lot will have to do with social distancing and whether or not we have to provide appease for students and staff there's a number of things that go into this obviously if we're gonna be in for school for a full day on there's no way we can social distance and keep masks on kids while they're eating and we can't have 200 kids in our cafeteria there's also a whole host of questions about you know movement in the hallways and trying to keep kids socially distance in the hallways as well as in classrooms our buildings are extremely old most of which are over a hundred years old the classroom sizes are not conducive to keeping six-foot distances between all students so we will have to wait for some direct guidance that comes out of the the State Department to give us some idea of what they're expecting from us whether it's a split day schedule you know some sort of blended learning situation and and how we can house kids another question Pat 7:45 did you answer my first question about pandemic plan and subs yes I did at the beginning of the meeting the pandemic plan will be posted on the board website after it's approved the old one is currently there the new one will be updated tomorrow and substitutes we're sending out a RFP which is a request for proposal on substitutes and our current substitute great is is rate in average with the county another question lauren packs at FHP our security aides now in the BB EA as the agenda shows i do not believe the agenda shows security aids as represented or unrepresented they are underrepresented they will continue to be underrepresented you learning you would mention going back to the question some sort of like blended learning is that like a hybrid of people kids whose home and kids who are in class yes okay yeah again it's so hard it's so hard to figure out what we're gonna do in September and we're developing multitude of plans again a lot a lot of discussion is you know with if but in this executive order or if this executive order timed out doesn't get reissued or anything like that as a school district without an executive order we must open the doors to bring all the kids back so obviously that's that's a concern for us especially if we're going into the fall without any direct guidance from the Department of Education on you know are we are we required to keep the social distance the masks the gloves the all the stuff that's going on now with that obviously is is funding we all know where funding is delayed and it's going to be delayed for quite some time so have again I don't know how we fund a lot of things that that people are talking about with schools nor do we have the space to pull it off sorry I really do think we we have to we have to wait and see what the guidance is going to be but a blended learning would give us the option of reducing the amount of kids coming in keeping some online and and you know shifting back and forth we have another question Jackie beer is Flemington New Jersey will Lamont / annex have a security eat in either building No is that out of necessity for staffing what the security yeah yeah I mean right now we we've cut where we where we needed to cut to to get us to the 20% if funding changes that we talked about this at governance is the funding changes and we get we don't get cut to 20% then that we're basically predicting or there's a another stimulus bill that comes out of the federal government that puts money back in it's easy for us add things back in it's not so easy to take away so no we planned for the worst we plan for what we think is the worst case scenario hopefully more money comes in and we restore things going back going back to the blended learning sure an executive order saying otherwise would that be something that would be left up to the parents no no no that that would have to come out as a directive to school districts our mandate in the way but again everything always comes back and tied to funding unfortunately we have to be in school for 180 days they count attendance based on each day and the way attendance is counted as the physical kids in the building so again they would have to come out with some sort of legislative new legislative law to allow blended learning or an executive order or some sort of health praxis I don't see any more questions do you want me to wait a little longer or do you want to move on that's a question for you Michelle what time did the last question come in last question came in probably a minute we had another question just gonna say a couple minutes from whenever the last one came in okay Jackie beers Flemington New Jersey will there will be an Ursula mountain mine annex you will be crossing back and forth between both buildings to see so sick children or will be will we be crossing the crossing her students to see her the nurse you have one nurse at Lamont Lamott annex there's only two grades there and she will be going back and forth next question Campbell wheely who is Jay Merryman it's our Merryman and he happens to be the board attorney you Patricia Patricia O'Reilly 7:45 schoolhouse I have no other questions thanks for letting me pose those questions during the meeting you [Music] you alright this everyone okay at this time raise your hand if you think we have waited sufficiently for any further questions I think I think waiting really did a good job but I think we may be a tower we're good all right well then I'm gonna make a motion to adjourn no ah what do we have - oh I'm sorry we can't even adjourn yet sorry guys I'm a motion for the UH yeah yeah what we're up to his hymns is middle of high school resolved that the Board of Education approves the of the resolutions is outlined an approval of HIV cases more painful and it is only one item in its 15.2 can I get a motion motion motion Azio second second second miss Morris discussion none um roll call vote Mike Stoller Sheree yes mr.

thank you my business manager who's proposing that we work with Nadia Energy advisors so more information for us on that I'm just a little recap of kind of how I came across this I was watching a bunch of webinars on all this kovat stuff and the these people had done a presentation I reached out to the Kane CSB OHS and West Aurora actually did use this vendor for theirs and saved them over 600,000 for the next three years so I I set up a meeting with her and director Paula way we listened to her Nana's their pitch and basically they're an independent contractor and they facilitate electricity and natural gas pits for schools and for other other people but the lady Becky she is the one that handles schools and basically this the service is like a Bay in Reverse we're on eBay you you try to get a high bid and whoever it has the highest bid is what you saw - this one is whoever has the lowest bid so they'll seek out sealed bids from suppliers and then give us kind of a price range for the price to beat and then from there they'll invite all the license appliers in the state of Illinois not just the few that reach out to me so our pool of participants will be increased then they you select the date and the time to perform like a lot of this live auction which was completely transparent it's time-stamped and anybody who wants to watch can watch so for about 20 minutes suppliers will see what the price to beat is and then they can submit multiple bids to reduce their margins to try to win our business typically 10 to 14 suppliers participate savings can be anywhere from 5% to 10% I'm hoping for more Nonya is paid directly from the supplier so basically tonight and in the in the package you'll see all the information of the information that they had sent to us and kind of getting approval to allow them to perform the service for us at our next board meeting I'll ask for permission to allow either myself or dr.
ball mr. ball mr. ball yes miss mustn't miss Martinez yes miss Morris yes miss Stevens yes miss Rosamond oh yes mr. Morris all in favor aye all right see everybody in a few in a week yourself all right stay safe all right everybody
stern to accept a low bid from the live auction if all of our thresholds are met and then our next board meeting is June 15 so on June 16th if this is all good we will hold that live auction and then lock in our price and hopefully we can lock in at a lower rate than what are what it might be in the fall our electricity is not up until November I just want to kind of capitalize on the savings that we can hopefully get now before stuff starts happening in the future so that's great anybody have any questions for Dale all right well thank you go or so and well just one more thing of Westar I was way bigger than us so their savings is gonna be a lot more than what we would I mean we don't even spend six hundred thousand ours I ask genoa Kingston kind of does this for their natural gas and they said that they saved them about twenty thousand so if we kind of compare ourselves to Genoa's size it could be you know fifteen twenty twenty-five thousand dollars in savings hopefully so all right thanks we have an update on remote learning dr.
Magan when you share some results of your survey so before I share the results the survey report nakid should be I'm summarizing the survey in addition to the actual colored slides that you could take a look at but part of that I just want to give a shout out to the translation Department our paraprofessionals and our administration for successfully actually doing the bag tag and drop for all of our buildings were able to clean all lockers including the gym lockers in one day with our paraprofessionals at our transportation and then load them on school buses and have them delivered the next day overall we receive very minimal complaints we just had one or two regarding some projects that may have gotten crushed but otherwise for the most part we had great success in the bag tag and drop so kudos to him and her team in transportation they did a really great job our administration our paraprofessionals who assisted us and getting that stuff safely home to our students the summary of survey results partly what we wanted to do as we wanted to hold learning in a attempt to have a good vision on what we're doing wild areas that we could work on for instructional practices as well as assisting our parents and our students we did a survey week one and then we gave the exact same survey in week four to see how we are adapting and what the changes that we try to shift administrative Lea and talking with teachers how do we perform overall in the summer you'll see that for the most part communication is being seen as a very positive for both teaching staff and for the district in general in terms of appearance we're on the high 90s in terms of the three fours and fives for both week one and week two we did go down 2.5% in week four I think partially because of the grading process and trying to figure out how we were going about attempting to do the grading for all three different levels elementary middle school and high school overall for the responding parents approximately 70% of the responding parents felt that work is sign was just right during week one and it dropped a little bit to 64% in week four partly I'm wondering if that so they're getting frustrated with trying to figure this all out before kids it started lose motivation and we're trying to keep them going on something we definitely want to take a look at we saw a 5% shift moved to from the just right - too much work so parents were starting to feel like maybe we're handing out too much work by week four so something we want to take a look at in the event that we continue in the remote learning process for the Fall response time was one of the things we wanted to make sure we had good response time to parents and to students from our staff it showed that we had a game from week 1 to week 4 about two-thirds of our parents felt that response within 24 hours and week 1 up to 72 percent of parents receiving responses in week 4 we saw a good game there as well and then consistently across all groups we sought the most used learning tools that we currently utilize where we put a lot of our dollars into and trainings into was canvas Google email and any Google product that we have whether they be Docs sheets slides the Google meets in terms of face to face and canvas conferencing one of the challenges that our parents really saw and they were facing is really dealing with time management and establishing those routines at home trying to complete the assignments along with their students without having to help them they felt that there are unfair expectations for assignments and understanding the assignments and how the assignments would be graded however all these categories did see a positive decrease from week 1 to week 4 so we did make a large adjustment administrative ly to make contact with staff members and it did look like it paid off as we saw that we had a nice decrease in those areas in the middle school high school survey we also did students in middle school in high school and then students in grades three through five the students grade through through five there wasn't much difference between what they gave us and what the parents gave us or I did not do a large summary there for the school high school overall they felt the communication was better in week one than it was in week four we dropped slightly there but we were still fairly high about 90% in the three four and five category again the amount didn't work did shift from being just right in terms of percentage to too much from week one to week two but very very slightly about 1.3 percent and then the response rate for students we have a 10% increase within 24 hours between week 1 and week 4 so we got a much better response very coming from our teachers to our students as we moved along with in the remote learning process so that was good to see and again the students faced challenges in certain areas where the largest decreases we saw was time management and establishing routines unclear expectations for assignments understand the assign understanding how science will be graded but the largest challenge decrease for students was understanding how size will be graded then a decrease of 22.8 again that was an area of focus for our administration to work with their staff to help students understand how assignments were going to be graded and we saw that about 25 miles to 25 percent decrease so students felt that they were getting a good clean understanding of that by week for the educator survey for week four our respondents were only 129 students in the first one we had well over 350 so almost half a little bit less than half percent the students are the educators respondent overall though we did see improved confidence levels of teachers teaching in the remote learning environment I definitely increased between week 1 and week 4 for both lesson design and student engagement and how they are feeling confident regarding that as well as how they were feeling confident to assist their own peers in the remote learning process and then when actually improved by about 15 percent in terms of feeling more comfortable helping their own peers an area that decreased and our teachers were filling was the area of support and collaboration however this one we may need to get a little bit more feedback not what it is they felt they needed in terms of support and that collaboration piece what was shifting they're already at 10% lost there which of course we we don't want see that and then the area of learning new skills in terms of technology but in instructions increase substantially by about twelve point six percent so feeling much much more comfortable in this environment which is good to know in terms of if we end up going at the same rate in the fall the area of biggest challenge for our teachers is really how do we help get that child engagement up and what can we do to really help them be engaged in that learning process we saw nine point four percent increase from week one and week four in the area of this so it's definitely something we need to consider it as we look to move into the fall and we look to say if we don't end up coming back how do we help with that engagement and making sure that we're getting students engaged in that process but overall I think we saw some pretty good gains and surveys any questions regarding the process of remote learning or anything that you yourself experienced as parents I just hope they revamp the whole remote learning mandate I mean it student engagement can go up if the students know they have to do it I think that would immediately help things and yeah it's just the common sense thing is you know if teachers are required to do X and X students will be more engaged everything will be everyone will be helped with to a greater accountability I guess that's one of my well I think the idea and obviously we were all flying by the seat of our pants but I really think that the board and administration in conjunction with our curriculum folks and our building administrators we need to come up as we think about you know figuring out how as we you know roll into contract like what are we going to do if we're in this begin for a whole semester for goodness sake we can't say just do your best and if you try it's something you pass so how do we have a different level of accountability all levels at the administrator level the teacher level support level parent levels to student level and I think that's going to be the biggest challenge here I'm still optimistic if we move to phase 3 in JUnit there's a good chance we'll be able to come start the school year in person even if we do that I think we're more likely to you know have more days in the class in that school altogether than if we start out of it but we need to have a pretty solid plan different than what we did this last nine weeks far as requirements and firm expectations I think what we found was the the more we had face-to-face instruction whether it be through Google meets or some kind of direct instruction of the teacher giving a lesson and then actually staying there for questions the more engagement where you seek so that will be an important element that we work with our union folks to try to get that opportunity for us and to be very clear I don't we are not in the minority with that I mean you know with the districts of students that I come into contact with and surely you know you guys are the building level in your communication with other schools I mean I have you know my girls had at least two meetings a week in second grade from hbt they chose to participate at times we did not participate that was a choice that we made as parents because they're not comfortable on camera but they weren't doing any teaching right it was all just kind of checking in so how do we do the synchronous learning and and but that is the same as every other district my parents who have kids in all levels and our area especially Mid Valley districts who have not had any direct communication with video with their teachers quite common to not have been any communication that's correct and I think we did a good job in terms of after we saw our survey results from week one we did revamp and worked with teachers and administration and I do think we saw a good increase in the number of video or face-to-face more connection for purpose of instruction not for just checking in especially real school already well thanks for those results of the putting all that together dr.
Milligan I'm trying to straighten out my neck to go on to the next information item we have summer capital projects update director Paolo is on the line I believe yeah good evening the major updates that we talked about months ago was our paving projects which because of the situation we have been able to begin at Prairie Knowles and the district office pending some dry weather will be able to continue with those the weathers can have been hampering the starts to those but well those will be ongoing projects and then after we close out the school probably early June we'll begin with the Central High School Central Middle School and Howard be Thomas lots got our plans and coordinating with transportation those lots started will continue with a lot of our other painting and flooring upgrades and updates that we do annually we'll be adding some the blood resistive film to the East Side schools that's slated to be done this summer and just various other small projects but definitely the paving project is our is our priority for the summer is there any questions about anything thanks Dan thank you alright that wraps up our open session and you know motion in a second to adjourn to go into executive session hello decade dual return after we complete executive session board members we can take like a five-minute break and look up thank you you

athili you're going to start with a special report I want to take a moment here at the beginning of this board meeting to recognize Arielle and Haley for serving as students on the board for the past year they are now officially done with schools congratulations I'd like each of them to just come on a spot here and tell us something that they learned being a student board member this year and then what's next for them moving forward so Ariel we'll start with you all right so what I've learned from being on the board of education is that there is a lot that goes on within our school that a lot of people don't think about and I feel like I was able to help at least some of my friends understand like the reasons behind things for like if they didn't understand something I would let them know like if they have a problem they can talk to me and I'll try to like bring it up if they have an issue which they didn't or like I would invite them to the board meeting so I feel like that was something I learned and what's next for me is that I'm going to Eastern Illinois my major is going to be kinesiology and I'm let me write a check there nice job on Eastern that's where I went and look what happened there area no no no thank you oh we wish you the best of luck we are sending you a little token of appreciation that will show up in the mail in a little bit in a few weeks here so and then Hayley how about you something you learned and what's next for you something I've learned from being on both the board and the school newspaper is really how to communicate what we talked about in board meetings and like all the information to the student body I wrote a lot about these board meetings throughout the year and I found it really interesting to like get the students informed with the issues so I really learned that and next year I'm going to University of Illinois I'm studying civil environmental engineering and yeah that's about it thank you so much yelling good luck thank you a vine and you know I mean gross uh public so you know when you're back in town you have nothing else to do you can always come by and visit us we actually at this board meeting we also then introduce our next set of student board members but with everything that's been going on we're gonna applause on that and then do that in the fall so that'll that'll be coming in September at some point so they carry on early and like I said we wish you the best of luck and thank you for all the time you've slept with us this year it's great to have the student perspective at a board meeting let us know how you do we're really rooting for both of you you're both going to be very you're both gonna do so well in life it's so easy to see if there are any letters of recommendations from adults there's a lot of them here I mean I don't consider myself an adult but the rest of them okay parent feedback from the parent teacher Advisory Committee and I guess Scott's gonna yeah I'm gonna turn this over to Scott and then we had a few board members present as well go ahead Scott yeah so we met last Thursday evening we had 17 participants and I think about eight parents we're on a zoom call with us and Mike and Joanna during this as well and we reviewed our behave for special education we reviewed and revised our behavior intervention procedures and then we moved into gina's consolidated district plan she went through the needs assessment and presented that to the to the group and offered feedback and then after the meeting we did send out a Google Form to get some additional feedback if there was any I know I usually leave a meeting and think of about ten things so we're just waiting on feedback from that and I'll share that when we get it it was a good night I mean board members that attended want to weigh in on this at all or Gina I don't have anything to add it was just as as reported and I think it was just Johanna and I that were there so yeah I had you know I wasn't sure if it was the appropriate place to ask questions I just was sort of interested because of all this Colvin and are we re not going back to school how they would implement doing some of these things you know like testing and doing a bit you know or a functional assessment I had questions like that I just wasn't sure if that was the proper venue to bring it up that yeah yeah I was just gonna say that obviously with a behavior plan it's usually based on you know the environment that you're in and it just obviously geared towards school environment so those are gonna be you know obviously we'll be figuring those out as we go in terms of how to support students and families and we have resources that we do engage families with to help offer some guidance the the actual procedures is really like a legal requirement of the IBA an IEP world that is given to parents on an initial evaluation or when they entered the district so we were just kind of updating just to give everyone an example like we had a board policy that had was changed so we needed update pad yeah that's kind of what I thought was so I did yeah it wasn't yeah and that one there wasn't a lot and I know that the questions some nerd around like some of Gina's questions about you know testing and and all that and that's obviously we're working through that right that's gonna be pretty complicated how are you gonna test and keep it safe and sanitary stand absolutely or Dina maybe or maybe you want to share a little bit about me because I'd asked during the meeting we discussed and you know what are we going to do in the future because you know we've relied it on we've relied on some of the standardized tests and and and a lot of these data points to kind of help direct us you know in in the right direction and how best to respond and and we're not going to have some of those data points this year so that was you know that was great that was the only question I had had during the meeting and you did a nice job addressing that so there's no doubt we're gonna have to look at different data sets or find ways to get appropriate data and one of the things we also talked a little bit about at the meeting is that there are going to be gaps and we're going to need to put in place interventions that will help students to master the content they need to eliminate the gaps it's going to be very targeted and I'll talk about that a little bit when I talk about the consolidated district plan but certainly we are gonna have your different data and think about how we support students differently yeah and once once the school year ends then we're gonna start looking at really three different pathways a return to school because there's got to be a transition period coming back you know from remote learning back to face-to-face instruction will look at enhancing our online remote learning experience it's likely that at some point next year if not to start the school year at some point during the year there'll be a flare-up and Cova and we'll have to return to remote learning for a period of time or if there's cases in school we might have to close down for a couple of days to just do a more thorough cleaning there's all kinds of scenarios where we might come back we might be remote or we might be in some combination of a blended version where you have some students returning and some students working virtually so we're beginning to put together plans and protocols and ideas for that we're also collaborating with DuPage County I'm helping to lead the group of high school districts across to page on what the hybrid model might look like and then we're waiting still for isby guidance on those three mile as well so I'd imagine and over the next month we're gonna be trying to figure those things out and all the details inside of those you know it's like figuring out school all over again you got a big job but that's that'll really be our focus once we wrap up the school year this week all right any other things on the Parent Teacher by this very committee meaning it's not you usually write up a report of any other comments you get and we just all three could be back Friday notes yep all right Scott as well discipline code revisions and changes to the parent handbook athletic activities handbook a reminder all of the handbooks are an extension the discipline code which is why we bring these to the board every year because by going through the board approval process the student handbooks are an extension of board policy Scott yeah and I just I just wanted to thank Karen Taylor and Kelly's earner for the work that they do they're kind of charged with looking through all the pages of the handbook and working with staff in the building to get feedback on changes and things like that and that and you know with our district student handbook now when we do changes throughout the year we bring those to the board during those months so you're approving you know forward for the next school year I was gonna highlight I'm willing to talk about any if you have questions but I was gonna highlight more of the discipline related things in the handbook cuz the other ones were kind of just tweaks and changes that we were so we were doing so on page aide talked about tardiness we're just making a uniform where we had originally from last year we had period one was five minutes or less was considered a tardy or I mean I'm sorry 20 minutes or less for period one and and the rest of the two through eight were considered five minutes and we're just making them all 20 minutes to make a uniform which will work for us and then looking at transportation for the bus conduct we just expanded kind of the consequences that could occur so we listed you know detention saturday detention in school out of school in there directly and then under our safety personnel section sixths the school resource officer we are deleting the last part of it that talks about parent consent is not required for searches and that's also falls under the use of breathalyzers we're removing the same statement that said parent consent is not required so we're removing those based on some changes in the law obviously the student handbook part of a law does state that if we you know if we put it in our handbook then it helps us as we move forward navigating it but there's also some law so it's kind of treated on an individual basis for that and then section nine which is oh yeah go ahead yeah I was kind of shocked yeah I guess I never really realized that it said parental consent was not required originally because I always watch change so we'd actually it did allow us to do it without having parent consent but with some of the changes with the law speaking to you know how school resource officers engage with our students you know we're taking out that part does it impact like searching lockers you know routine Locker searches and things like that or does that mean you have to get parental consent each time or not for lockers lockers we can search in any mini point but the rules change last school year with how really our security personnel are SROs and any police officers interact with students on campus and really require us to first contact a parent if any of those personnel are going to be interviewing students or interacting with them didn't we traditionally do that anyway yeah but it's even more stringent okay okay so was our practice it just wasn't in the okay okay yeah sorry I popped my internet went down for second but I think kinky answered it perfectly are you guys hearing me okay okay and then and then going down to section nine for supporting positive behaviors we added kind of based on our initiatives to keep improving kind of with the restorative practice for students the community service piece then we looked at Saturday detentions and we put a statement in there about we can remove a student from the saturday detention and then provide further consequences as appropriate and then teacher detentions we gave a little more flexibility I think we kind of lock teachers into having to have when a teacher issues at detention they're the ones that serve it with the student and they were referencing like the department the you know office so to speak and so we just gave some flexibility that the teachers can have with giving a detention and then in the disappointed workerle we did we gave any referrals to come in from teachers and it just gives the deans the ability to put some of those in the file and so I'm not and I'm still going extremely be going in and out for you guys can you hear me okay yeah okay and then obviously you guys have been involved with the path program approving the positions so that's our program that will be in our in-school suspension or intervention room where we're looking to obviously reduce out-of-school suspensions and give interventions we have a curriculum that we're going to be using called why try this was actually something that we introduced at the parent-teacher Advisory Committee last year when we were over at North and we gave a introduction to the parents about the white ride curriculum and our program and they gave feedback and then you guys obviously approved as a board the positions to support that so we appreciate it and then the last part was the just adding a reference to the wording so that we can include hemp products in our descriptions under the discipline charts that are on page 43 and 44 so that kind of sums up the other ones the other ones like I said are just kind of tweaking a little bit of of the language and things like that but aren't really student discipline related Scott yeah I noticed it in our in our agenda we've got the athletic activities handbook included in in our reference materials for the meeting but I didn't see where there were any changes to the athletic activities handbook yeah they they haven't actually had changes in that front for a little bit so that's just moving forward as is right now but it'll follow the same process that if there's anything that comes up throughout the year there isn't he's changed we'll bring that to the board at that month to approve but right now we're using the same one to go forward okay I think the only change we've made in the last couple of years was clarifying clarifying some of the eligibility pieces I think we provided some different language and some of the key waiver language was updated in the last couple years but other than that it's held pretty true to form the agenda just said that there were revisions and changes to the oh yeah there's no yeah there was no changes to that and then last year when we put it all online in one format rather than you know having a district handbook and a district student athletic and activities handbook there was no changes that they had we just basically took what they had and just created it into a kind of a one version type of form so yeah sorry for the confusion on that all right so this is up for approval later on this evening under action moving on to Geno with the title one waiver you're muted Gina there you go I'm sorry it wouldn't let me unmute okay so the board may recall from last year only South High School is a title one school and title one schools if they have a free reduced lunch percentage below 40 percent operate what is called a targeted assistance program which is what we operated for years however we can apply for a waiver that allows us because as you can see we are just over 28 percent almost 29% of the population at South high receives free or reduced lunch we can apply for a waiver to be a title 1 school wide program which is what we run right now because the board approved it last year where I'm asking the board to include it again and what that does is it just gives us a lot of flexibility and how we service students greater flexibility in serving all students not just students that are academically at risk for example we can service students in terms of any area related to college and career-readiness we were able to put an AP tutoring program in place this year at South High because we were school-wide so I'm again asking the board to improve the waiver for South High School to run a school-wide title one program has any questions about that hearing none thanks do you know we put Gina back to back with the consolidated district plan this came to the this guy is now coming to the board this used to be a bunch of different plans but is now one giant plan and we're bringing it to you in draft form kind of what Gina is up to you with this tonight and this comes back at the June board meeting for formal approval so Gina if you want to provide an overview here sure the consolidated district plan this is actually our second year we submitted last year and as Hank said this is a very comprehensive plan it covers our basically our title grants as well as our al grants and our special education ide a grant so title one which I just spoke about a minute ago title two which is professional development title three which is for our ell program our English learners also title 3 which is our immigrant education program grant title 4 which is a relatively new grant as well it's only been I believe this is the third year if I remember correctly and then our special education grant so this large plan encompasses all those grants the purpose is to streamline it because each grant would ask a series of questions and there was some repetition so the idea is to streamline that you answer the question keeping in mind all of the different students whether they're yellow students general education students special education students students with a 504 plan so on and so forth so you answer the questions comprehensively but you're doing it in one place and to write a plan that applies to all the grants and applies to all the different funding sources one of the things that is required is a local needs assessment which we completed virtually I had two different groups working on that which was comprised of parents teachers staff members paraprofessionals and administrators and obviously we got feedback from various holder's addressing specific questions and then of course I don't bring it you know the plan to you next month for approval so just to kind of give you a timeline of what this looks like and why we're still in draft form I began writing the plan in April in May continue writing the plan conducted the needs assessment that I spoke of shared different highlights for example with the parent-teacher advisory and with various stakeholders reviewed a lot of feedback from various groups and now I'm presenting progress to the Board of Education moving forward obviously need to complete finish the plan I will present it again to the board at that point it will be final and for a vote and then if approved we submit it to the State Board of Education at that point it goes through four levels of review and hopefully will be approved so our local needs assessment we looked at several different data points we looked at the four-year graduation rate we looked at the English language arts SAT data we looked at math SAT data we looked at ninth grade on track which the board may recall me speaking about before essentially and if students are on track at the end of ninth grade they graduated their graduation rate within four years is substantially higher the state looks at ninth grade on track of students who earn a minimum of 5 credits their freshman year and cannot fail more than a semester so half a credit in a core subject area in math science social studies or English and then we looked at some attendance currency data one of the other data points which was the first time for this obviously to look at is we looked at what I call disengagement data basically students who are not engaging for us three weeks at that point in remote learning because as I said a little bit earlier we certainly want to make sure that we work on interventions to assist those students so the local needs assessment where we read all those things you know I just tried to give you some summary statements here it was determined that there is a need for increased bilingual and English Learner support as we looked at some of those data points we saw that our ESL population is not meeting standards in many areas there we also looked at student attendance data and for the second year in a row and I had some people on this local needs assessment coordinate on last year's which was sort of interesting for the second year in a row we see a spike at 12th grade and so this group this year really honed in on 12th grade so we need to explore ways to improve student attendance increasing supports to specific subgroups in many different areas a lot of our teachers talked about the deep equity professional development that we've been doing for a couple of years now and hope and really stressed that that needs to continue and appreciate that several teachers brought up an advisory or what we've been calling an access period seller brought it up when they were looking at the ninth grade on track data and brought it up specifically to ninth grade but then many brought it up in terms of all students increasing support for AP students came out of last year's needs assessment and then also was mentioned about how we can use our school-wide title and programming to support all students embedding SAT strategies in various classes and then as I mentioned earlier about gaps that may exist from remote learning primarily in courses then built for example mathematics or world language certainly all courses but focusing on those we have many interventions in place and over the years the board has heard me talk about a lot of these interventions so most are probably familiar I will mention a couple that we have put into place more recently for example the seminar class the board approved that class a few years ago so that's a recent intervention Riis intervention is also a math specialist who assists in some of our math classes working in some cases with the entire class but more often than not working with small groups or individual students and then there is language supports this year we put in what's called the language line and I can tell you the Durham remote learning it has been invaluable I I and used it for hours contacting families to make sure that they had the supports that they needed and and also food quite frankly but I wanted to point those out because those are new we also have a bilingual facilitator and we looked at that role a little bit differently and have some of our spanish-speaking homeschool liaison from North assisting at South as well so the other ones are interventions that the board has heard about and if you have questions I certainly will answer those but I wanted to talk a little bit about our new interventions that are come out of this needs assessment still a little bit out of last year's need assessment because we weren't able to do all the things that we wanted to do and then programs that we're putting in place so last year when I brought the consolidate district plan to the board I talked about ap tutoring and providing Advanced Placement students with assistance before school after school possibly during the lunch period if we had teachers that could could do that and we did get it off the ground and and running and we had quite a few students participate but as you can see we began in February and then went out on remote learning in March so very short lived but we do plan to continue that next year and actually had I had some teachers asking if we were going to so they were they were pleased with at least the start of that we increased bilingual and ell programming as the board already knows we hired a bilingual Yale teacher for South High School for next year to fill that need last year we had planned to hire roll called an interventionist for South High to use title one funds for that we had merged that position with a part-time bilingual position and we were unable to hire to find a candidate to fulfill that need we are hoping for that to be a little bit greater role this year and to actually hire separate from the bilingual programming and I can definitely see that interventionist working with students who may have gaps due to remote learning and then you heard Scott already talk about the path program that path program was mentioned several times by teachers during the local needs assessment and how excited they are to have this intervention in place starting next year so the next steps I'm continuing to gather and analyze the feedback various groups have looked at the data at various time so some of that data is still coming in I'm continuing to write and address the questions and better than the plan I'm working on finalizing the summary document that I would present to the board with just the high legs of the plan if I was to print every page of the plan it would be immense and then I will review bring back that final plan to the board in preparation for a vote and then after the board approves we will submit the plan to the Illinois State Board of Education so you don't know if you have any questions or specific questions about the plan or the progress on the plan busbar I mean as you can all see this is a pretty big job that Jena has each year to pull all this stuff together and put it together but it's a good review each year of what's working in areas we have for improvement what job does do you have that doesn't isn't a big we only get rid of big jobs [Laughter] program yeah yes that's the program that we brought to the board earlier this year where we have staff dedicated at both buildings for students that have either in school or in lieu of an out-of-school suspension would participate in the path program yeah we're staffing with with school personnel and then we'll provide them with interventions in in school and then will support them for many weeks after the discipline consequences to make sure that they're not drifting backwards okay I recall that now yeah name didn't clear up so many so many acronyms it's hard to keep track all right okay now we have a series of calendars the first one is the revision for or an amended calendar for next school year for 2021 and as part of the DGA contract negotiations we added an additional in-service day at the end of the school year so that falls now on May 24th that is the only change that we have made for next year so we're asking that the board adopts that and approves it later on this evening so no major change in that so any questions on that one so the change really is that we have for emergency days instead of five well you still have five but now they start on the 25th and go five days so they go into June now also that so that you know so 30 the 31st would be the an emergency day no the 25th 26th 27th 29th you at first I mean there got it all right okay let's hope we don't have to do that well and that all being said we know when right now we're in an unusual time for school calendars so we have no idea what the future holds for how this actually plays out and works I've been on several calls including calls with is be to discuss do they foresee any drastic changes like recommended later start times or those kinds of things they have not made any of those recommendations so because we don't have any other our recommendations for Mia's B or other organizations saying not to start on our regular start day we've decided to leave it there and then moving on we have the file and you sprit amended it is a very much a mirror of this year's calendar the only thing that's different or the only thing that's different from the past is that additional in-service day we just talked about on May 23rd in 2022 we did have lots of discussions about did we want to come back later than we have in the past and we looked at some different calendar options knowing that next summer people might want to longer summer because they're not going to get much of one of a traditional summer this year however with the way that winter break falls in DuPage County and and everything else it it became very clear that we would have to majorly rethink how we run the school year to try to change the start date in any way so at this point after several meetings and discussing a lot of different options we're recommending that we kind of roll over that traditional calendar for 21 22 we'll keep an eye on it as the school year goes on and at this time next year we'll come back asking for a formal approval of this calendar for the next year Hank I I just have one quick question for you mm-hmm have you had any pushback or anything of starting the academic year on that Friday you know August let's see it says 13th under J first 20 seconds and then having a weekend no our our families actually have responded well to that 13th day students and families come in it's kind of an orientation day they get the lists of all the supplies they might need they go through their schedule and then they get to have one more weekend of summer and then we're back running on the Monday I was concerned about that when I first got here and asked a lot of questions about that just kind of that Friday hanging out there but it's actually more appreciated than not okay and is it a full day or is it a half day it's a partial day partial day okay so we bring the freshmen in separate from the rest of the classes that day and do a modified schedule so the freshmen get some time to find find their way through the building and work with the student leaders and get a feel for what's going to happen and then the rest of the students come through well actually it's the other way I think this the freshmen come in in the afternoon yeah because then they have like south has mad dash and North has a similar type program for the brush so okay I just didn't just asking yep we had lots of conversations about it but we're recommending right now we we just stay the course okay sounds good all right so that's up for approval was he being as well and then Julia spent a lot of time thinking about our board meetings and where they should fall so she's been working on a board meeting calendar for the next year follows our traditional first Monday board workshops third Monday board meetings and then there's adjustments made for holidays and breaks and those kinds of things throughout the year so thank you to Julie for putting putting in all the work to pull that all together Thank You Julie all right and that's it for calendars I'm going to turn it over to Jim to talk about electric and gas contract renewals so every three years or so or a few years we do multi-year contracts for utilities largest of the two is electricity much larger and their gases are smaller but still a substantial cost to the district and it's good thing that we I think did it now the market has been really positive in terms of going to it was so good on the the gas side we decided that it was worth terminating our contract I got that right make sure I didn't flip that around ya know an electricity was so good we we short the electricity was going to go one more year and we cut that off and made another started a new three-year agreement and there's a penalty for doing that because they already have arranged the gasoline of the gas the natural gas in the line so we had a penalty there but we still are saving money by making the changes here and then the following two years we'll have about 98 100 thousand dollars of savings in those two years so we wanted to lock in the current low rates even having to to pay a contract amount and a tire in this first year just to switch the contract out but the electricity that the process was really I think well done this year Jim and Kristin is assistant the work with our broker on this and they had first day just a closed sealed meeting I'm not meeting but a bid and then followed it up with a live auction and the the preliminary bid that was sealed was just to make sure that everybody had the terms the same terms because there's a lot of little pieces to these electric contracts in terms of the delivery hidden fees inside those contracts so we made sure everybody was on the same page with the sealed bid submission and then allowed them go to a live online auction and got the price down even a little bit further by doing that about a week later so both processes were very good and now puts us in a good position for the next three years especially opening the new buildings with a lot more space in them it'll it'll be good to have a lower rate going into that so there's no action on this is informational what we there's there's no legal requirement they have to bid this out it's just something we did to make sure we got the bottom of the price points mark you buried the lede Oh what you buried the most important part of it oh yeah I know oh yeah the biggest thing was which was board goal and district goal is to go green and the electric contra you can't deal with gasoline but with electric we're going to be a hundred percent green and it's built into the contract so we're happy to be able to do that that's right rite of passage but it is it's a great thing to do and we're happy to have been able to work it into the side so mark and Jim did a great job of making sure that electric for us moving forward is a hundred percent green energy so I know that that's been a discussion with the board in the community for a while and we're happy to be able to make that change and in doing so also saving the district money so it's a win all the way around so how do we actually do that is that offsetting the costs or you know what you know there is actually a little bit of a additional cost related to that it's it's we're getting it generated from I think it's all Illinois to wind farms and okay electric producers in Illinois it's it's actually the best way to go green in Illinois because putting up solar panels and things like that there's a lot of different costs that can involve with that you're putting it on your roof if there's a problem with the roof you've gotta you know move that stuff and actually it doesn't pay for itself at all but to do that it's there's very few states where energy costs are so high that the solar just hasn't caught up with the the cheapness of nuclear and some of these other products production sources we're going all green and it's and so we are we coded green vendors in the state the broker lines it up for us thank you so much sure all right any questions any other questions on energy all right well new technology won't work this as well thanks we the least we're doing is kind of how we we've done for the last few years we have a new set of Chromebooks that we give a freshman year we're finding that they are lasting hopeful that all of them will continue to be as strong and rugged but they're lasting for years and so we make it to the point where we just let the kids keep them but we haven't made that chant you know that change yet with something we'll probably look at it one more year and see how they're gonna get a lot of uses this next year and even at the end of this last year we'll see how well that goes but we have a very competitive price on this so we are going to use a lease it's really just to save us on the budgeting side we can we can we paid over four years it's very low rate of interest reasonable rate of interest and we also built into the same Lisa authority to go higher up to eight hundred fifteen thousand dollars because we are pushing to get all of the internet support updated when we open the new schools the new you know MFP is complete and now as the buildings are open up and Jim has worked very hard especially in the last couple of weeks to try and coordinate some of these things into the next couple summers this summer in particular but then will we want we and we might even be able to do it out of the budget so I'm gonna take a look at that and see if we can't build this into the budget just pay for that part of it and not even touch the other excess money over the four hundred and twenty thousand dollars we need for the Chromebooks but it just gives us out the authority dude can I have a line of already built-in so we can send it off to a bender right away if we want to do some replace the UPS devices which is become a concern for rod and a few other things in the system so we have capacity to do it with this lease we did this before when we upgraded the internet so we've kind of just filed the same same path I'm sorry questions for mark alright so there will be an action on that is an action I done this evening yes next one is master facility plan progress and start with the overall budget report or it has been seeing this every month for a while now the number we always point to and look at is contingency so that contingency number estimated at completion right now is at five point four three four million so that includes all of the alternates that the board approved at the last board meeting all of the allowances there in here from the last round of bids and it also it does include the one project that's up for board action to vote on tonight which is the windows at south so that shows you that if all of the alternates were improved that's all of the alternates in the worst case scenario so that doesn't factor in you know the work that we're going to do to try to drop the cost of the alternates in the auditorium work at South that we discussed last month so that's kind of the worst-case scenario number right now the number that continues to go up is that on our budget costs that's almost entirely due to increased asbestos removal it's a good thing we're getting it out of the building it's a bad thing cost money so but that's ongoing work that happens with that we are way ahead of schedule in a lot of ways because the buildings have been closed so at South High we have the auditorium I think is almost entirely demolished and they're getting ready to start working on footings for the new auditorium the courtyard has all of the footings in it for the new Learning Commons and the interior of the South ice team edition is cruising along so things are going really well there over at North High bleachers are almost back on track here and getting ready to put those into place of the home bleachers and squad rooms underneath the new athletic addition is getting really close it's it's looking great moving along and we have started to put footings in around the southeast corner of the building and have almost completed Jim you can correct me if I'm wrong but I think we're pretty close to the demolition work inside of that southeast corner of the building as well which will become North's steam Edition so making a lot of progress here moving pretty quickly I'd rot if you go to the next slide or the next thing there yeah this is the other thing we've been looking at each month which is again they're in the total value or within that GMAX guaranteed contract the contingency is there for you again FF&E we're really starting to buy furniture now because that phase two had a whole bunch of furniture in it and then phase three which is the Commons will have another bundle of furniture in it really phase two has a lot of equipment in it that's outfitting steam areas at both buildings so you know some science labs you have fine arts labs engineering labs there's a lot of equipment that's in phase two that's reflected in that that budget that's starting to be spent down there and then the remaining contractor allowances you can see phase a is close to being wrapped up remember that last amount there is due to some fire alarm and sprinkler work that's going on throughout the entire project phases B we're starting to get those allowances back as we're starting to close out phase B and by the end of the summer we should get some of that money back phase C is all of the first level of contingency and those allowances those bids are just being closed up so that number has grown as we've awarded bids but then hopefully we don't spend all of that and that adds to contingency in the future as well we are as we are sitting at about ninety nine percent of all of the bidding complete at this point a little bit of casework on both sides of town and a few other assorted items so that's where we're sitting with the budget right now any questions on this or the work I'd encourage the public to continue to look at those facility Fridays we've started to include in those the bi-weekly white progress report so that's the update from the architect and contractor or the Builder and in there are some great images 360 views of the project and the work and the spaces it's a really great way to kind of immerse yourself in the project and and see how much ground they're making up right now it's pretty impressive all right so hearing no other questions I'm bit returning from last month I provided some additional information to the board this was the one alternate that was pulled out which is replacing the existing windows in the steam Commons area itself hi what you can see there in that image is the frames we don't have the glass yet so it's no it's tough to ask the to make a call at this point with kind of half of what it looks like but that's the frames that will go into the new windows rot if you'll scroll down it's kind of gonna have that full glass appearance like what you see in the left hand side of that image that's an interior window remember these windows were exterior windows and are becoming interior windows so it's kind of a look and feel to this space the change here as I said last month is an aesthetic change that we're asking for now if you scroll down again Rob you can see there's a longer view of the windows that are being replaced back into that alley at South High that's above the new culinary arts lab and it's heading back towards the Fieldhouse rod if you continue scrolling down this gives you an image of the two sides as you're heading across the bridge heading back into the second floor at South High you're standing right now on the the second floor balcony of the Steam Commons looking back at the original building on the right are the new window frames on the left are the older window frames so this is one of the locations where you'd really notice that there's a difference between the old and the new if you scroll down again rod that's what the old window frames look like so what we're proposing here is to replace those frames with the newer frames for the whole entire wing so that's that whole stretch that you see there so that's heading back east the windows that were in the older part of the building that weren't in the area that we had to update and then I think rod can you see if there's anything more I think that's the end really we asked the acousticians that's a word I've learned it's for this project if there was any significant difference in the sound quality of protection between the old windows and the new windows there really isn't it is really in the look the cost for this change in the project is 183 thousand of the net 183 thousand there's a portion of it somewhere between thirty and forty thousand dollars that we're going to spend either way because we're going to have to put some kind of film on the first-floor windows and we're gonna have to change some window coverings because now that used to look out to the outside now it looks into the inside if that makes any sense because it's looking out into the Commons so we're still gonna have to do some things to the windows so you're probably looking at somewhere around a hundred and forty three thousand and new costs in comparison but the total cost of the project is expected to be a hundred eighty three thousand at the most so later on tonight is an action item it's just there for the board to take a boat what I'm asking for the recommendation out of the court committee was to do that this summer if we don't do it this summer then we're probably putting it off till next summer or not at all so we'll probably come if we don't approve it tonight to be done this summer we'll continue to look at it we'll see what it looks like once it's all done we'll continue to look at the budget and then we'll go back to the core team to see if they recommend bringing it back in the future to the board so at this point I'll take any questions I might have Jim help if I have something I can answer I'd like to say Hank you know the going back to that that bridge picture I don't know if we can bring that back up but where you can you pull that off whole Janu yeah so schools uh maybe about that's the one so you know aesthetically here you know you look at this you're gonna know right away something changed and so there's a there's a break in the continuity yeah at North you know we're not experiencing anything like this and we did it take any of these windows out of the out of you know we have a commons area at north we have existing windows that are they're looking out into that space and you know and we we did it take those things out of the budget at north and so you know I even think that there's a little bit of an of an equity issue here at play we're you know we're if we don't go ahead with this you know we're we're taking something away from from whom the effect that we did it take away at nor and in fact this was part of the original scheme you know just I think the windows visually are going to make a big difference the windows that are there their existing are like 45 years old you know at some point everything has a has a life expectancy so we could expect they'd have to be doing something more to those windows over time and putting in new windows would avoid those future costs and I know that the acoustician is saying that there's a minimal difference and I agree with that however there there will be a difference the new windows will seal up better the new windows will not have an operable feature to them that has to be you know closed up and sealed up these will come as a fixed product whereas existing windows right now those bottom those bottom windows are operable hopper awning windows I believe is that right Jim yeah they're there push out yeah so you know so there there will be an improvement I think I think to be fair you know there's not a there's not a sufficient improvement to make that a reason to do this right but it is a it is a fringe benefit to doing it there will be an improvement over what they're just not I'm I'm very much in favor of this and we're and Hank I I think we're looking at the hit on the contingency is a 100 probably 140 something thousand not 183 when we look at the net effect right yeah yeah there is a there's going to have to be improvements made to those windows one way or another like you said we've got a seal on we've got to screw those opening ones shut you know and and then Edie I'm going to ask you to hop on here and just comments about some what are the difference of the look that you were mentioning gotta speak up bad can can barely hear you okay how's that that's better the new windows do have metal window frames are divided into three it's not one giant piece of glass I just want to clarify that but it's just those three large pieces it's not divided into nine pieces like the existing windows the other thing you saw the shading of the Mustang on the window and if you've been in the main offices at the itself now we have the gradient that shades out the direct look into that's what hank was alluding to all of those first floor classrooms we would have the frosting coming up from the bottom about half way so that when kids are walking in the hall right outside those first-floor windows which used to look outside will now be looking into the hall so that's some of that added cost that has to be done anyhow and if we do that now and then come back and do the windows later that's money down the drain so just wanted to provide some clarity to that and and the difference in how they look I like to see the continuity just you know for the because you're just it's all going to read together you're coming from the Commons into the steam Edition all the all these windows all really ought to be the same and it's you know it's like I get editions I do for you know we do a lot of edition work with our work yet clients you're wanting to to switch to a different material or something and there are ways we could do it make it you know palatable and but ideally you know it's it's it's a money thing right and and and so you don't have the money to do it and then you don't but I you know I I'm kind of with Mike I'm not an architect but um I just see that we've invested so much money in this it's like taking Michelangelo and tell him to leave the head off I just kind of would like to see it completed and look the way it's supposed to look we've invested so much money in this if I can if I can add one more thing this is older space it now looks into the new space the Learning Commons in the center of the building all of the windows that used to look outside in that space that I'm now going to be looking inside are getting replaced these are the only windows that are we're outside windows and are now inside windows that are not being replaced yeah so that's point if you start in the the large Learning Commons and you follow that curve all the way through out the courtyard all those windows will look like the new windows on the right and then you'll follow new windows all the way until you hit this bridge and then it will be the old windows so it'll be like the tail end of the Commons you'll hit and it'll have this older look to it yeah this is something that I mean quite honestly in retrospect I mean I wasn't aware that this had been taken out you know and i i've never would have recommended that it be taken out i understand why it was but you know I'm just I'm putting my architects hat on here this this is something that you know I really don't think that it's something we really should have been even having a discussion about at this point it's I understand why it's happened and I get it but but this is one of those I mean it's almost like us debating brick colors you know it just this should have been should have been part of it it's part of the design and and so and we're fortunate to have enough money in the contingency to be able to put it back in and I think that that's the right thing to do so I'm hoping I get a few people to agree with me is there something we're not we would if we didn't do this is there something else we would use that money for well right now the contingency is just there to obviously for the second two phases or the last two phases to make sure that we have anything there in case we run into anything concerning in Phase two I asked about how that was going and with the audit or with the footings all starting to be poured the auditorium being removed itself and the footings starting to be poured there our biggest concerns for the for the builders have been we made it past those kind of milestones I'm not saying that they won't run into something else that eats into the contingency this summer but they said that the scariest things were past and then we have next summer worth the building which they'd like first to hold a million aside for that so if you look at if that you're you're just around 3.4 million and with that amount of money we believe we can finish out the rest of the class room and hallway improvements that we have slated in our wish list and that would spot that would spend out the remainder remainder of the contingency at the end of this project right now over with white to get estimates to make sure that that dollar amount would would be sufficient but we believe it will be so we're not preventing some other like something else that is under which I will don't get our wishes yeah everything that's so far is it's that 5.4 million includes every wish on the wish list that we have brought to the board to approve including this you know and we have a potential additional cushion in the allowance allowance morass we're going to be getting back yeah you've got quite a bit right now and those allowances is our first level of contingency should anything come up the actual contingency is something that was unforeseen I am totally unexpected my only my thing is is is I think that we need to make the continuity look look at the way it is you know I want to change it to those windows the only thing is is if if we don't and we decide to do it later it's gonna cost us probably twice as much I don't know about twice as much Jerry but it there will be an employer cost because you're gonna have to do the window treatments and tinting this summer one way or another so that that space is good for instruction when kids return there's also a slight increase in the cost of installation because right now we don't have to protect porcelain ceramic floor and if we do it next summer we'll have to put some floor protection down I mean it's not a it's not a huge cost right but it is a it is a cost right so we might as well do it now I mean it just makes more sense to me so that's my feeling are we debating this because we talked about putting the windows in before and we decided yeah I'll go back to the history of this role at the beginning when we were working on estimates based on square footage of spaces the cost of some of the bigger projects at South were estimated to be higher than they actually came in at so to come in within budget we removed a few things from it and this was one of the things that we removed at the beginning when we were putting the original budget together so it was part of the original design it was removed as part of the early budgeting process to make sure that we within budget now that we're within budget we'd like to add this back Anton we brought it last month as a discussion as part of the alternates there were some concerns amongst board members and we've always said that if there was ever an alternate that there was kind of the board was split on we would put it as an action item at the following board meeting so this is the first one where the board was kind of split on an alternate so it's up for discussion here we're just explaining a little bit more than we did last month and then later on in the meeting it's here as an action item to do it this summer if it doesn't get approved then we'll send it back to the core team to reconsider if we do it at a later date and the picture that you're showing as is showing that that's the way currently right now that that's the way it would look obviously there'd be glass on the right side they'll be glass at three glass panes in each one of those windows and then after on the other side of the bridge to the left are the original windows that would be left there if we didn't do this alternate with that kind of big pane with the little pain underneath it so is that said the the six pane look in each of those rather than the three pane look and also you'll have the large aluminum frames the frames are not as pronounced on the left side of the bridge or on the the right side of the bridge in the new area thank you yep absolutely all right any other questions unknowns all right thank you for your consideration taking time to understand the request as I said it is recommended by the administration and the core planning team all right for your requests we have them and we have fulfilled them and they are stood out on our website all right that's it for the super-intense reports they were ready to vote on the consent agenda is there any item any member of the board would like to before you go to a vote I need to draw attention that once again tonight we have a revised board report from when we first submitted it because we've got some more hires that we added on Malana vasilich the social studies teacher gemst Reysol he is the advisor for highlight newspaper jim is the senior teacher in our department and we are so glad to have his experience as we move through this presentation you hear the many awards consecutively earned by our students it will become evident how important his continued leadership has been to our students thank you for all that you do Jim my name is Terry Ramos I am the department chair for meeting communications at the high school and it is my pleasure to be here this evening to tell you all about these wonderful students and the work that they've done for newspaper this year there were three awarding organizations the Indiana High School Press Association out of Franklin Indiana I provide schools each year with the opportunity to have their work critiqued on many aspects when newspapers reach a particular level of quality that also reflects the IHS piays core values of truth courage integrity and freedom they are awarded the Hoosier star the Hoosier star is similar to a state title in athletics and this is the tenth Hoosier star earned by the high light staff since the 2008-2009 school year and the 16th since 1998 our next organization is the National scholastic Press Association this organization promotes the standards and ethics of good journal as accepted and practiced by print broadcast and digital media in the United States this year we're celebrating two wins from this organization both the print pace maker award as well as the online pace maker award the pace maker often called the Pulitzer Prize of scholastic journalism is one of the most prestigious awards in the country in this print category the highlight is one of only 19 national winners and the only winner from the state of Indiana incredibly this is the eighth consecutive print print pace maker award for the staff additionally additionally the highlight website highlight online was named one of only 16 national winners this is the fourth consecutive online pacemaker for the highlight staff of students this year the NS PA also awarded a special category of coverage congratulations to the highlight staff for a first place in the köppen 19 coverage online news or feature package category outstanding work and so quickly accomplished as well I have to say finally the Columbia scholastic Press Association is an international organization for students that was founded in 95 with goal to unite student journalists and faculty advisors through a variety of methods including of course critiques an award program such as this one the crown awards are unique in that it is solely discretionary and based on evaluation by the crown judges they consider when evaluating for this award all aspects evaluate the reader or viewer including content design presentation coverage photography writing and editing the highlight was one of 59 finalists in the hybrid category which reflects publications that have both a print and web presence the highlight was the only finalist from Indiana since the hybrid category began in 2011 2012 to highlight has earned six crown Awards congratulations to the highlight staff on their seventh crown this year for the hybrid category as you can imagine these awards are owned by the staff as a whole but it's our desire today to honor especially the work of our outgoing seniors especially those in management and editorial roles these are leaders for our completely student-driven newspaper these students have provided superior work as well as leadership throughout their years with highlight and its publication here's a picture of our highlight staff and we will begin with our editor-in-chief Michelle Hong reaction e managing editor jaci her design editor Jackie is one of two students who also achieved an individual title for information graphic of the year from the NS PA this is a best of the best individual award she worked on this with one other student who will be highlighted later in the presentation Aditi Kumar managing editor Angela Lee managing editor raffaeli managing editor Oh de llamada managing editor Hari Patel managing editor and the other student along with Jackie who achieved the information
