I couldn't hear that we've received no little no it is okay hey stuck in his next video stuck to look really cute report on the legislative education net welcome to page Dan right I will be movement attend the meeting on Friday but I was at the meeting two Fridays ago or the one three Fridays ago there's a lot more questions and answers answers that were raised what's going to happen with the upcoming school year I don't remember the individuals name but we had a sleep representative on that call I mean lots of great questions were asked by the by everybody and not a lot of answers were provided and can adults have any answers were provided yesterday I looked through the material they sent out but they weren't in the same situation we've been in for months a lot a lot more questions than answers today yeah we continue with a lot more questions and answers Lambs Didrik did report from blended it's really the governor's show right now that the legislature is working from the sidelines and is looking for ways to become more involved in the decision making process but is waiting for the appropriate time to do so you could expect there returning this week and we'll have a very expedited session to approve several bills one of them you could expect would be the budget I in whatever shape that's going to take moving forward in other lens news we did approve if you remember a couple years ago peg moved to our own company and then land and hires ethic OHS is the name of the company as consultants that's how how the arrangement is with with PEG working forward we extended her deal with through ethical for another two years so peg will be around for a little bit otherwise we're meeting pretty regularly I think we have another meeting coming up but we see every Monday and Friday I am in meetings Monday it's with all DuPage superintendents and pegas in those meetings and provides us updates and every Friday it is the DuPage County dupay it's the superintendent's in DuPage County that have high schools so that's all the unit districts and the high school districts meet every Friday to discuss what's going on you know in these current times and then we begin working again this week and then next Monday Memorial Day will be working all day with the superintendent's working to come up with plans for whatever comes next so so hopefully somewhere between now and then we get some updated guidance from is B that's been rather slow to arrive and is frustrating a great number of us right now I hear you say you have to do that you have this meeting on Monday a Memorial Day yeah it's it's we just need time to work and that we've been working weekends and nights that's this began Mike so this is par for the course but it's the only way we can carve out time and work on what comes next and still get the jobs done that we have during the regular day so like a lot of folks were we're on call for whatever we need to be right now Wow and thank you absolutely the School Association for special education to Page County Joanna do you do I don't because I did not attend their meeting they switched it to Thursday and I just open the notes today and haven't gone through it but I look at something for next time Terri District 99 Education Foundation yes we we approved three more grants grants thank you I'm here for Jerry that looked very exciting for both North and South High and we'll be bringing those next month for you to approve and then we'll be passing out some money because some of it will be used right in the summer time to prepare for the fall so those are pretty exciting with PE and special ed and some stem work so you know it's just really exciting to see and we're gonna also be working on sending out an appeals letter and for the fall and get ready for that and you know I think that's about it isn't it is the foundation still raising money for oh yes we have called the we have a couple of pass throughs I believe that the shield one is not taking any money right now I think that they we expend the fund it's there yeah that that has brought in about fifteen thousand dollars right at this point we have made and distributed seven thousand face masks they cost about $1 apiece to make but then there's upkeep of machines and maintenance and those kinds of things if we reach a point where we need more money to keep meeting needs then we'll reopen that campaign up that we raise fifteen thousand for that and what like four days I mean there's a very short window we open right now in the provid Relief Fund for families there and in that our administration is identifying families in need and then the foundation is purchasing gift cards for places like jewel all the targets some restaurants and he agree on those kinds of things and then the administration is distributing those cards thank you so much Terrell tell them we also thank you yeah that was really a great and a great opportunity because the families are getting gift cards rather than just cash to to spend at local restaurants which are helping them to and to the jewel and Target we're finding that they're good about is selling this a batch at a time a large one so that they can do 25 and $50 increments and then the principles are the ones that are requesting those funds and and passing them out if I remember correctly so and that one I believe is still open for donations so you know if if anyone feels like they would like to donate to that go to our website and there is a link to to donate to that fund yes yeah very easy very easy and Foundation has been amazing through all of this you know you look at the face shields and and the a lot of the 3d printers were using there were seed projects from the foundations very they bought the they helped us fund those projects to begin with they've now come full circle this way and then we'd be remiss if we didn't mention Social Fund that although we didn't have many social events at the end of the year that we would have been funding with that the foundation has raised over $10,000 for students in need they can't afford to pay for things like prom or dances or camps or those kinds of things where we'll be able to us once we get those things back up and running we'll be able to help folks afford those things as well and those you can donate to at registration you know that's just a link on the on your registration form for the Angel Fund and and I would imagine that the covert fun is going to be on there too and then strictly to the found so that we can give grants to to our teachers in that and that'll all be on registration area however we we are going to make it a little change to registration we finalize that to them started announcing it that we're going to actually issue the fees statements at the beginning of September so rather than July we have a lot of movement that happens with fees at the start of the year with people changing classes and those kinds of things so over the years we have to do a bunch of refunds and then rebuild people for things so we're going to wait until everybody settled in their classes to put out these statements and they're not going to be due until October let me give that a shot this year we also know this is a time where people might be a little bit strapped so we think that waiting a little bit we're gonna see how it goes this year and see if it cuts down on our amount of work to start the year and if it gives families a little bit of a break to go and October until they need to start paying any fees and a reminder we do allow people to go on to payment plans and to pay that over the course of the year in whatever amount that they can do it some home a little slight tweak and the change therefore this year Oh anything that we can help some of our families because this time has really been a strain on them for a lot of things and why I give our a lot of our families a lot of credit for for doing doing above and beyond not only the first responders but but also just our families in general I mean who would have thought they had to be teachers I mean really it's just incredible to me so thank you parents and and families thank you foundation and finally might you have anything for my ASB I do not okay that we do have to even upcoming board meeting on June 1st we'll have the workshop meeting at 6:30 p.m.

Dominic James I'm happy to say that he was nominated a High School Teacher of the Year this school year and I believe it's appropriate given his dedication of the students and the radio station having been with us just a mere three years he has grown the programs to encompass more broadcasting and student work than ever before thank you to mr. James for his many many hours he dedicates to our students my name is Terry Ramos and I'm lucky and that's call myself the department chair for this wonderful group of students and teachers it is my distinct pleasure this evening to narrate these accomplishments for you there are two organizations honoring us this year the Indiana association of school broadcasters holds an annual conference and competition for radio students from across the state at the University of Indianapolis the network is submitted prior to the conference but students also compete live in various roles that are judged that very day we received many 1st 2nd and 3rd place awards which was very exciting but I think the students were a little shocked to realize that with all they had they also won the is B's prestigious and coveted title of radio station of the year the photo you see here on the left-hand side is just after that announcement they were thrilled due to restrictions and who attends the picture only shows part of our radio staff the Intercollegiate broadcasting system marked its 80th year for hosting a national conference at Hotel Penn in New York for high school and college broadcasters we were lucky enough to attend this wonderful event before current events took a turn that competition draws work from across the nation and offers our students opportunities to learn from some of the best in the field it also puts our students against other high schools and in one category even other college students join me as I highlight some of whj greatest achievements this year at these two conferences again these are only our first place awards at the state and national levels and many other students had earned other levels of recognition so let's begin Nicholas Beckman grade 11 won a national award for his part in a comedy show with four other students who will also be highlighted in this presentation nicholas carlson grade 11 won a national award for his specialty music show Jess Cooper grade 11 very special young lady because she is one of those students who did go into competition for manager of the year against not only other high school students but college students as well and our very own Jess Cooper won that national award we're very very proud of her and lucky to have her to help lead all of our students well Courtney grade 11 he won for his part in the comedy show that's also a national award Jace Terry grade 12 he is one of our outgoing seniors and he won both at the state level and national level for his sports cast work Luke Donovan grade 11 national award for his soccer play by play Chris Elmore grade 11 national awards for political news show spot news interview and his work with that five man comedy show Harel halevi grade 11 national award for the comedy show Konnor Inskeep grade 12 a national award for his public service announcement promo Charlie Maur grade 12 national award for his women's basketball play by play ethan mana Guinea grade 11 national awards for his comedy show as well as his morning show the many guinea mixed down Jaclyn Meili O'Brien grade 11 a state award for for her in-depth podcast page or vol grade 12 a national award for her liner sweeper this is a particularly difficult award to win it is to put in a perspective for you it's like a station identification of sorts something that's very short and so lots of students do these and it's very difficult to create something that is good enough to beat out many many other entries so congratulations to page on that Niharika Kalevala grade 12 national award for her sound effects work she did that for a recording of where the wild things are Kendra Perkins greed 12 she won a national award for her talk program that she does with another student he'll be up here next that's called the three-headed snake and her underwriting spot as well Spencer Pickering 312 the other half of the talk program three-headed snake a national award for that as well as his sports interview and David wieder half's grade 11 the National Award for his men's basketball play by play this concludes our presentation today thank you to all of our students for a job well done and our teacher mr.

McHenry's reins as she takes on her new challenge early childhood education is one of my passions and I've always said to myself and to my colleagues that you know if we can only get to the families earlier and this opportunity will give me the chance to do that this is my opportunity to support and nurture and transition pre-k and kindergarten families into the public education setting well at the same time I'll learn the strengths and the areas of improvement in this early learning environment at Cushman school so I've had experience in all facets of Education from early education to the college level I enjoy working with teams that hold children most important in their decision-making as I know that Dartmouth does that currently I've been working remotely with some of the staff at Dartmouth and I can already feel that there's a connection there and I feel that it'll be a team that will be a wonderful one to work with and I hope to contribute to it as much as I possibly can right now I've been really busy as I'm sure all of us in the country have been doing all educators it's just preparing a safe and secure way to get folks back into the building and bring children into the schools and whatever kind of hybrid or you know model remote model we might need so I've been working really hard here in Falmouth and at the same time trying to you know do as much as I can now to start learning names and eating you and and seeing I this is an interesting situation I'm very lucky to uh to be taking on a position where I you know I haven't been in a school yet I haven't met anybody face to face yet except through zoom and and to feel the way I feel already I'm just I'm really excited about it so I am I don't want to take up your time tonight but I am willing and able to answer any questions that you might have of me or anything I can do to help with the transition process it'll just let me know great great crit yeah guess I'll set off first and foremost welcome to Dartmouth we are very happy to have you I speak for myself anything for the rest of the committee that we are very proud of the Dartmouth public school system and the the set of individuals that doctor gifted has put together over the years and I look forward to I sure we all look forward to you coming on board and bringing our expertise expertise I'm just curious um what brings you to Dartmouth whoa what did you see in darkness that I really draw that really drew you to Dartmouth I I have to tell you strategic plan is very similar to the treaty to plan that I helped build here in Falmouth I believe in access and equity and reaching all children and being it supports that provide everybody the access that they need to be able to appreciate the teaching that's done by our professionals and and I know that you know our populations are similar with regards to children and their social emotional needs and that variance working with children that have some deficits in those areas and I feel that I could you know bring a lot to Dartmouth in that area but also you have safety and security I believe was a primary aspect of your strategic plan and that too I've been it's very very important to me for children to be safe and secure I believe in partnerships and they can come in forms of PLC's within a school building or they can come within the building's they can come within the district at different levels and also from the community and the families so I really AM excited about you know just building partnerships and that dynamic because you know together so much more can be done excellent well you really are joining a great team I think and I wish you nothing but success great thank you I'm excited about I really am all right John thank you madam chair Jeanine walk Justine welcome aboard thank you question I have for you is what do you see is some of the challenges with early in this day and age with early childhood education yeah I'm sorry so some of the challenges that I see yeah and how do you tackle them okay so I believe that some of the challenges are that some of the majority of the families can be younger though they're coming into you know first time situations with many of the children coming into preschool or kindergarten it just the challenges sometimes to bring the families along to believe that we are all in this for the betterment of the child and to have them have trust in us and to believe that we have the same priority which is the health and welfare of their child and some of the challenges are just you know some some families may have come through public education and not have had the great experiences that many of us have had and hold on to that and now they're bringing their babies back to that same setting that they once you know maybe didn't have such every morning time with and there's a lot of I think anxiety and and maybe just a to be supported in a way that can really you know have them believe what we're doing and know that we're a team and we're working together pretty good thank you I appreciate that you're welcome Erin yes hi Justine I just wanted to welcome you I was reviewing your resume and it's quite impressive and I think you have a lot to offer Dartmouth and um as someone who's been in the Dartmouth system for a long time I know you're gonna be very pleased with the different personnel what you need and I just want to wish you the best in your new endeavor oh thank you so much I really appreciate that you're welcome dr. Jenkins I just also want to welcome you and I don't know if I'm ELISA has scoped out like what everyone on the board where we're coming from but if she did she'll probably tell you that for early childhood education I am play is the magic word for me you know I I think it's just so important for our youngest kids to have fun at school right because what we're teaching them when they start is to the love of school and that's the most that they can learn so that's music to my ears just so you know I love to hear talk about the fun that they're having and it sounds like you have great background and great variance I'm sure you're gonna create and create a positive learning environment for those kids great I believe in play you know it's primary that's how we all began to learn to to be I don't know just to be personable to be people to navigate those conversations I mean play is learning as well so I don't see a real clear gentle delineation between play and teaching and learning you can make everything I mean we can be playing in the fourth grade right and still be learning at the same time so it's all in the approach and the messaging I think and the opportunity to to let the expectation be that play is learning echo I just want to welcome you you know as you're learning through this remote you know time you've got a great team that you'll be working you know alongside and learning from and and and teaching as well in John you know my fellow colleague out here so it was talking about challenges and what a challenge yeah you have right now you're like living it and so you know with turning 3 and all of that stuff that you know is yet to kind of be kind of ironed out and and kids coming back and then and the feelings around feeling safe and so I'm sure you'll reading your resume I'm sure you'll rise to that occasion and I guess my advice is just realize oh shucks in with those that are mentoring you here in the district the great team and I have you know the staff that's there and Melissa as well and they'll lead you and help you so just don't feel like you're you're at it alone you know in this remote time so right thank you I'm looking forward to meeting the Cushman staff tomorrow mom Melissa's invited me to her staff meetings so that will be happening I know there's so much I'd like to be doing and I know I don't really officially start till July first while I still am here at my school doing our district and having the challenges here it's just I wish there was two of me right now one that could be working in Dartmouth and one could be doing Falmouth you know but I'm really trying to just meld the two together and try to learn from both districts at the same time because we're all dealing with similar challenges it's just you know particular time I guess I am looking very forward to meeting the the staff and Cushman's well thank you thank you one else no well thank you for taking time to stop in to this meeting and introduce yourself it's been a pleasure and I look forward to getting to know you more bye wonderful okay so actually I'm going to turn it right back over to you dr.

Kara photos you second at that yes I did any other discussion Chair hearing none all in favor aye do you accept Shannon I got out of it last year you covered for me because I was in Japan but I will step up and I just like to thank Kathleen for the great job she did you Kathleen you were courageous and I was I stepped back when it was time to be a chairperson you know you went forth good for you if I may Chris absolutely yeah I know Thank You Shannon thank you everyone you know it's been my pleasure to serve on this committee as chairperson over the past year you know we've it's been quite a year we've you know worked through some pretty complex issues and you know it's been really an honor to serve and to see all of you in sort of a different light more directly and you know all of us I feel all of you are so committed to you know you look at other districts you hear things in the paper and being on a school committee might be some sort of political move and in a certain way and and each and each of us comes to this and serves in with you know diligence and you know just a real focus on what's good for the kids and and what works for our staff and its really been it's been a pleasure to to work with you we all have our own perspectives we we do our own research and but we come to the table with respect and teamwork and it's it's been it's been a pleasure but I'm happy to pass the torch to Chris Thank You Kathleen and I'm happy to accept it and with that being said you know I think it's really important to thank you for the job that you did this year and I do agree with Kathleen and I hope my colleagues will agree with me as well is that in some communities and then some school districts people do come to the table work with agendas whether it's for you know personal reasons or whether it's for big broader reasons but but I'm really happy you know that I think this is my seventh year now on the committee and I'm really happy to serve with the five of you I think we all bring a unique perspective to the table we all have our strengths and weaknesses and I think really most importantly is that we all respect the the role of the superintendent of schools in which we allow I think and I at least want to believe we do we allow dr. Gifford and her staff to operate the school district like they're supposed to on a daily basis and do what's best for the school come I'm not for the school committee before the school department as a whole and really look to you know we really stay within I think we do a really good job staying with our bounds and reason of you know doing the responsibilities given to us under Mass General law overseeing policy budget you know and obviously the role of the superintendent so I think we've done a great job to five of us given you know given dr.

and end at 3:45 p.m. is still exactly the same as presented before the second recommendation that for elementary schools has changed so the recommendation for the elementary schools will begin at 7:50 a.m. and then end at 2:35 p.m. which is currently that when we dismissed the elementary schools now that is 15 minutes shorter than our previous recommendations were recommending recommending a an additional 15 minutes to the elementary school day and then finally the last recommendation was the district-wide 40-minute late start days implemented approximately twice a month per teacher professional development and the for those professional learning communities we talked about at the last means with the wrong way no I'd like to start by just taking a little bit of time to go over why the revisions for the elementary school day and kind of explained those already except for the third the third bullet point which is we would take that 15 minutes that we add to the school day and add that to the current 15 minutes of recess that we students currently get each day to create a 30-minute recess block for students each day so probably the question on your minds is you know what's the rationale for making this change in the recommendation and I'll start out with I kind of reiterating what you said mr.

Kirschner about our feedback that the Board received I had 390 for you at 396 so there must have been a couple extras that got in there but how impressive is that that our school community in our community as a whole you know took advantage of the opportunity to weigh in with the school board and let their you know let their thoughts be known breaking that down a little bit there were in the on the the recommendation for the high schools and the middle schools the secondary changes there were 64 comments that were directly in favor of that in there were 8 comments that were opposed to the you know flipping the times to later for the middle in high schools and the elementary changes there were 13 people that commented who were in favor of that proposal and then there was 94 that were opposed overall there were as far as people that just were in favor of the recommendation are not in favor of the recommendation as a whole was 74 in favor and 48 opposed and there were 93 people that just had general concerns that weren't very committed to one you know one position or another but just had some general concerns and all of those comments and concerns were very thoughtful and and we took you know we took those into account so the rash now well number one when I say we listen to feedback and we've done that all along from our teachers and from our parents and we also pay close attention to study research from experts in the field and whenever you're making a big change getting all those key stakeholders and their opinions is important and weighing those and looking for themes and those responses to kind of see where people are coming from I'm sorry when listening to that some of the feedback we we pulled just from just from the people who had commented back to the board which a large number of those were elementary teachers feedback was concerned about the 30 minutes that the 30 minutes extension to the elementary school day was just too long some teachers expressed that a 7 hour day was too especially for our youngest learners we saw that a lot I'm sure you did too as you read through those comments another thing that was kind of common and some of that was from our elementary teachers who shared that the current day had a sufficient amount of time to accomplish the learning targets that they had and meet both the academic needs as well as the social emotional needs of the students that they were serving now we know from research and common sense that any more time doesn't necessarily increase student learning but it's really more about the time how the time is used and how engaged the students are and learning throughout the day dr.
