for he e for hello can you hear me Mighty B or anybody yes I I can hear you okay no Echo no Echo all right we're starting on a positive foot already I know it can only get worse from here oh no don't say that be better better if I can ask good afternoon everyone president Verano yes how's it going I can hear you good good um regarding public comments will public comments will will those only be taken at the beginning of the session or throughout so I was thinking of taking them as their agenda but then somewhere in the middle of the discussion also when you know depending on just how the conversation goes I was going to see if we um can put in another little spot there in case things come in from the YouTube channel that that because you know the first one is going to come up pretty quickly so okay so I was going to do the one up front and then the one somewhere in the middle do we have any already um no let me look back again um no so far there's there isn't any any comments yet okay yeah I'm checking the email and I think the ones from YouTube channel how are those coming in um Dr Bower or I think I think they're coming in the regular way I just mean you know how there's like a little delay and right okay you know so I just want to allow people the opportunity to comment given the delay and given a little bit of the content once we start talking um and people will be allowed to respond here also on the zoom right if they raise their hand yeah well no no are we're not taking public comment through Zoom through the hand raising like the normal one yeah only the hand raising yeah no chat messaging oh yeah okay got the hand raising and then that's that's the call right when they raise their hand that they're calling in that's I mean basically the same as we did it as we do it for the regular board meeting right yes sir okay and trusty Marquez is calling in oh we have a is that Andres AO is Andres I'm assuming so we have a quorum right now but obviously we're hoping for more than just a quorum for this particular meeting it's also 527 and I I don't see roio either remember he's got the first mhm okay trusty Kino is live from Eide San Jose Linda Chavez has the appropriate uh name under her so we know we know who we're talking to you avatar for let me put it okay there's Roo okay on my microphone it sounds okay right because I have my fan on over here and I don't know if you're catching any of that wind sound no problem okay sounds good to me all right turn off my ringer we hear some little birds that's not me I hear him [Laughter] too I don't know who has the little birds it's a nice backdrop to the meeting I feel like we should have like a little Montage of students or something playing right now as we wait for for the meeting to start maybe next time maybe next time we'll do it that would be cool you know how the um Create TV one has like the little like a little um splash screen with the music in the background before the meeting starts something like we're GNA get creative yes so we're not just all awkwardly staring at the screen wait waiting for the meeting to start I have video from a presentation of Joseph George I could play H it beats what we're looking at now I think board president is I I have 531 on my computer clock I don't know what time you have 5:31 as well um I was hoping trusty Marquez and I have not receed the response okay um says that her computer is taking longer than usual okay so oh maybe that's trusty Marquez calling in somebody's calling in here um trusty Marquez is that you calling in this is Ed oh okay hey how's it going Ed you okay um I was hoping to wait until we get everyone here um it's it's work her computer is working now that's what she texted me so she'll be here in a second um Let me give it another minute or two and then we'll get going I have some jazz music from summer school for good hello trusty Marquez yes I'm here okay now we can start the VIPs are here okay so U trust loera knowing that she is on the way Ely um I will go ahead and call the meeting to order the special board meeting um tonight at 5:32 PM um Can Mighty B can you please take roll today is a special board meeting and board work workshop of May 21st 2020 at 530 PM members of the board in attendance president Nano here vice president Corina loera clerk Andres Kinto here member Linda Chavez member Dolores Marquez frosto present uh vice president Corina loera presid on her way oh there she is members of administration superintendent Dr Bower present thank you marel so we do have a quorum tonight and this uh meeting is being recorded um so before we get started we'll go ahead and do our U Pledge of Allegiance so if you are able to given the scenario please arise and we'll uh recite the Pledge of Allegiance I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands one nation under God indivisible with liberty and justice for all okay thank you everyone um so before we get started I will once again um as is becoming the norm around here for our meetings just give a brief uh kind of introduction about what we're doing and how we're doing it obviously we all know at this point that times have changed at least for the time being so we are having our all of our meetings um in this format utilizing zoom and and YouTube and other technologies that allow us to take care of the business at hand of the district and also provide access and transparency to the public so that's what we're doing tonight um instead of explaining as I normally do all the different ways that public can comment I will just direct you to arusd.org so if you go to our web page page at the top left of the screen you'll see a part that says current board agenda if you click on that link that button that area current board agenda it will take you to the agenda for tonight's meeting and on that agenda it will describe to you how if you would like to make a public comment for tonight's meeting the ways that you can do it either email text or in the zoom platform that we're using for this meeting so for the specifics of how to do that um again refer to the web page click on the button that I mentioned the area that I mention and you'll see the agenda for tonight's meeting there that tells you how to participate um additionally we have um Mr AAR Gill has uh the control over the the zoom meeting so that if anyone um puts anything in inappropriate or not appropriate for this meeting he has the ability to to um take it off so that's why people are muted the public is muted and their screens are turned off but if a name or a label comes up that's inappropriate it will be removed as well so that we can keep this meeting appropriate for the our community uh let me see if I'm forgetting anything else um oh for public comment uh to go back a little bit I will be uh we will be having public comment as it is as as it is agendized on tonight's agenda which is fairly quickly once we get started however if I will also be looking for a place somewhere in the middle of the discussion to do another um have another opportunity for public comment so that people that are watching this on a delay on YouTube or think of something they'd like to contribute during our discussion can have the opportunity to do so so those will be the two opportunities for public comment in the beginning somewhere at an undefined time as of yet in the middle of the meeting um I believe those are all of the the house housekeeping type things uh so at this point I'll go ahead and uh just give a brief introduction about why we're having this meeting tonight and what we hope to do um so the district it is very important for any organization and in particular here tonight our district to Define things that that are known in this world as a vision statement a mission statement some goals some objectives every month we we come here as a board my colleagues and myself and the staff and make decisions that impact the future you know the future six months to the Future 15 years of this district and we do so based on our own um individual research and and everything that we do to to guide the decisions that we make however one of the things that we should be using as individuals and as a district to guide our decision-making process are these Vision this Vision these goals this mission that that we're here to begin to Define tonight we have been working off of some level of Mission Vision and goals that that has been from the past um but we we're here tonight to to redefine those things or at least take another look at them and make sure they align and they and they work with what we're trying to do given the current realities of the district and what we foresee in in the future for the district so that's kind of what we're going to be doing tonight as a board we'll be having discussion about what we as a body believe along with staff is the appropriate direction that we need to um begin to strategize and think about to guide the decision making in our district going forward so with that all being said I will turn it over to our Council Mr roel Ruiz to give us a little more um specific about the document we'll be referencing and and some other details of tonight's meeting yes uh thank you board president um so on tonight's agenda for Action there are three separate items um the first is approve the district's governance handbook the second is approve the district Vision state statement and then the last is to approve the district mission statement they're broken down into three separate um uh items for action but in fact uh approving the district vision statement and mission statement are a part an integral part of the governance handbook um so I think it's a it's a great idea to to open up to have two different possibilities for public comment on these issues since there is overlap um when the board uh to his you know just as a reminder um when the fmat report was issued in 2017 and then the state audit report in 2019 one of the areas of overlap of uh in both of those reports was um a lack of according to fmat and the state auditor a historical lack of adherence to board policies um and your this District's board policies your board bylaws specifically uh bylaw 9000 um you know call out for the board to set the direction for the district and to establish and to adhere to standards of responsible governments and to establish goals and priorities for the district with input from the community as well and that had been lacking historically um uh over according to those agencies over a number of years so one of the recommendations in both of those reports was for the district to um to establish those uh goals and and and priorities and Mission and values and to document them and then to re revisit those every year um the state audit report also asked for this District's board to establish a code of conduct and if you'll recall this board actually did adopt the code of conduct which is now incorporated into your board bylaw and so uh for purposes of today the governance handbook is uh the vehicle that's going to incorporate all of those Concepts and um as you recall from the discussion over uh a couple of board meetings there was some you know recollection that there that prior boards had in fact a governance handbook and so after some research and digging uh the old what I would call the old handbook or the more recent handbook was discovered and um so what we did uh working with staff uh what I did working with staff was to take that prior handbook and then just to convert it into word format form and then to go through it in Red Line um to uh strike through things that had been adopted by specifically by the previous board in terms of goals and priorities um that doesn't mean that those goals and priorities weren't worthwhile they were just adopted by a previous board and so the intent there is that you know this board will realize that you know your goals and your priorities are something for you to discuss and arrive at and as well as a mission and vision statement and then um the the next part of what we did was we um reformatted it in some ways um just to eliminate duplication in language and to try to tighten up or condense the language in there and then lastly uh to make sure that what was in the old handbook was consistent with current board policy and if it wasn't then it's stricken through through as well and that's why you see the strikethroughs uh in the board agenda packet the red Redline version has all the strikethroughs as well um and so everything else that was left over we kept intact in the board uh governance handbook and you know actually it's it's it's clear that there was a lot of work that that went into that document in the past and there's a lot of really good material and it's all very consist the stuff that hasn't been stricken through is very consistent with your existing board bylaws um but it's presented for consideration for you as a board if you'd like to change it to add to it to delete some of the concepts in there but the principal areas that remain for discussion uh as part of the governance handbook and of course for items uh 3.02 and 3.03 for this board to set or to develop mission statement uh to develop vision statement for the district and then to establish priorities and goals uh for the district on a going forward basis and those sections you can see they're highlighted and there there are blanks left uh in the document um for you to fill in uh but otherwise you know the uh this draft that's presented is broken down into just a a couple of sections uh one of which is uh the first one which I just mentioned is the board's Mission Vision commitments purpose and core beliefs um the next one is roles and responsibilities uh then there's uh sustaining a positive governance team culture and developing forms for government for Rel governance between uh in relationships between and among board members and between and among the board and the super intendant and then protocols uh uh developing protocols for governance uh and how you all get along as a board team in terms of recognizing board authority putting things on the agenda um roles and responsibilities of the board president Etc and then finally since this board has already developed and approved a code of conduct that is the last section of this draft for consideration I Incorporated uh the entire code of conduct as it wased by the board uh a few months ago so that's that's the background that you all have on the in the draft that's before you but really you know aside from being comfortable with the language um you know one of the the primary areas of focus should be developing And discussing and agreeing upon mission statement vision statement and priorities and goals for the district thank you thank you Mr Ruiz um So based on what you said I I actually have just a couple questions and I don't I'll ask mine and then I'll open quickly see if any of the other board members have any questions specifically about um what you just discussed so one qu clarifying question I have is because this is a governance handbook I I take that to be primarily the focus is on the the board how we govern as a board and so when we're developing mission and vision and Mission and everything else those are not those are not exclusive to the board correct so we're even though this is a governance handbook the mission the vision the goals are not only exclusive to the board this they're they're for the entire District correct that's correct okay I just wanted to make that clear and then uh a quicker question I think for gram itical suggestions that we may have um Can those be um kind of done like as a first reading second reading kind of thing or or what would be the best way to go about some of the more basic kind of grammatical type things we need to do that tonight or or could we bring it back at some point with that uh no it can be brought back um I do know that the district is trying to work within the uh the time period and time restrictions that have been set by the state auditor um I believe uh so there has to be some follow up in the next few days that to to show that the district is making progress in the development of these things um but to your point yes I mean the only way that this is going to work as a practical matter is to take your input today um if you can reach agreement on all these key areas that would be fantastic uh but we would still have to go go back and clean up the document to make it in a presentable readable legible form that can be publicized um and so I would say that to the extent there are grammatical issues uh that any board member wants to call out um you should forward those to the superintendent and staff after this meeting and those can be incorporated final document will have to be brought back to the board for final approval and I see you trusty chav let me just follow up really quickly um so in in essence then we can see this as a living document and make some um General hopefully reach some general agreements tonight that we can vote on and approve for purposes of compliance with the things we need to do but at the same time after that and after kind of checking those boxes we can still um consider this a living document and come back to it and really make sure that it meets our our needs a as a district yes absolutely okay trusty Chavez um I'm covering this now because um Mr roio covered the roles and responsibilities and he quoted on what the Board needs from the superintendent and I noticed that on section c of the table of contents that has been omitted in the new ones so two lines were Adit were omitted from section c and I would like to have those back because I know I ran into some uh into this during my presidency and I would like uh those added to uh roles and responsibilities okay so I think the way I was thinking about this and and colleagues please chime in of your thoughts I was thinking before we get to those I think most of us have read through it and we probably all have some areas that we want to you know discuss or or you know put put forth but before we do that I was hoping to just do make sure we're all on the same page about how we're working tonight um and so B really making sure that we all are clear on on what we mean in terms of vision what we mean in terms of mission just so that we all have the same definitions of those things so that as we have our discussion we're talking about the same thing so I was hoping to briefly cover those things and then move into the the the nuts and bolts the Nitty Gritty if you will thought anyone else have thoughts on on on the is that trusty Marquez um I I I mean I have a I I have a comment or or question actually um when uh rohelia when you were um reading out the table of contents for a b c d and e right yes yes so as I look at the handbook from 20 12 2013 um I'm just wondering ing that um I I agree with the comments that trusty Chavez had just said but I also wanted to know if you could explain and in the the the last um book that we were looking at which was the governance Handbook of 2012 um where it says explanation of agreements and signature page do you feel that's not needed over here um yeah so uh thank you for that question it it might be needed depending on this board if the board wants you know thinks it would be appropriate for all five of you to sign off the reason uh the reason I deleted that was because that was an agreement reached by the board that established this prior handbook so I wanted to make sure that you you all had an opportunity to establish your own agreements uh in terms of what were you what you were going to agree to in this B okay and I understand what we were going to agree to but my my question was um it we had put it in there to make sure that all parties agreed what they were so that no one could come back and say no that's not what I agreed to or that's not what we had said or you know I didn't want any of that going back and forth back and forth and so I that was the first thing that I went looking for um and and I'm just what you are saying is for us to agree to put something in there but this is already there and it's very self-explained you know um for both parties so if if you if you were to look at that page that's been redlined um it's labeled agreements to facilitate governance leadership and then it uh 2 46 8 10 it it itemizes 11 different things that comprise the agreement from this old board book and one of the things that uh you struck me about this page was that there are act there there are actually there's actually much more than just those 11 Concepts that are being agreed to or or that are being addressed in this governance handbook so U I'm glad you raised that point because I I felt like um if if the board is is uh inclined to to believe that the members should sign it to to memorialize their agreement then it really should be the whole book that's being developed by you not just those 11 items that are listed on that page okay so um can we make sure U I guess Mighty B can you note these these the things that have been brought up by trusty Chavez and trusty Marquez so as we get into the to the nuts and bolts of this part of the discussion that we definitely cover those trusty Chavez one more thing um when they did this the board study was actually done in 2007 and 8 and they put it together what the next handbook did was took a lot of the information from that study and then they created this one so I I would like us to also see the 2008 because it defines and makes a lot of stuff on the paper a lot more clear okay so possible and it would be would have been uh when uh Norma was the superintendent and and a lot of the stuff was really detailed and they brought csba to the district and they you know did it there so so what is it that you're suggesting now then I'm suggesting that this governance handbrook of 2012 was actually they took a lot of the information from 2008 from that um from from what developed there and then they revised it and then they did the 2012 one right and now we're revising this 2012 and going to do it for 2020 I think that we should also look at the 200 um 8 seven and8 one that was done because that covered a lot more stuff and it was clear when I read I read all three copies the one that we want to do now the 2012 and the 20078 so we don't have that one tonight Dr Bower is that correct correct so given that we don't have that tonight trusty Chavez what are you suggesting for tonight can we are you okay with moving forward with the one that we have and then as I mentioned this is a living document so we can revisit it in the future if we feel like the what we agreed to tonight does not sufficiently cover the things that were also included in those past ones because without that we don't have it tonight to review so we uh believe me I was I've been trying to push this for a year and a half to get this done but I realize that I am the one that's kind of delaying it but there was so much more information on the other one and it was kind of concised down and now we seem to be incising even more again so I mean as far as time wise if we have to do it uh I guess at the end of the evening you know I'm I'm willing but at the same time uh maybe we could revisit this next year and you know come up with more time of one that we have really gone more into death when we can all meet together you know should we be able to okay so it sounds like you're okay then for going forward with what we have in front of us tonight again recognizing that that we can revisit this um and and make additional modifications in the future or subtractions or whatever like you say I'm not married to it okay trusty era uh I want to thank um trusty Chavez for um reading the other one as well and I'm wondering um uh Linda if there's anything like big that we missed today since you were able to read those if you can make sure to like mention those today you know when we adopt tonight um and then I would love to come back to it you know of course um okay when things are a lot slower and there's no pandemic and and and can I mention something really quick now because I might forget later this evening um can you just note it down and then we'll come back to it no okay mention it mention it and have it put down on the minute I think she should mention it and have it put down on the minute we'll come back to it it'll be in the minutes but I just want to make sure before we start going down any tangents we bring it back a little to um to frame what okay so give me five T just give me five words number B roles and responsibilities that was omitted and I asked o I only get five never mind okay so roles and responsibilities so that's definitely I think that definitely is um def will be discussed this evening so that's fair okay so um what I was hoping to do is is again just have a brief discussion about because a big part of what we're doing is this development of vision and Mission and so I as I mentioned it's important that we're all on the same page of how we're thinking about what those two things are then I think um Dr Bower and Mary Bell have um just some examples that they could put up on the screen when we're ready um of what we're talking about that other districts have used just to kind of jog our brains a little bit um and then from there we can move into to the discussion of of because I think the vision and Mission are are Prim AR as as Mr Ruiz has mentioned they're primary to what we need to do tonight and I think they also guide the entire rest of the document these things that we're talking about now are Guided by vision and Mission so so just very briefly um my understanding and you know I have I've worked with this kind of stuff in my line of work and I think maybe some of my colleagues as well U with developing vision and Mission and so um my definition and I'm throwing this out there as a starting place so so a you know anyone can chime in after but what a vision statement it should be is it's future Focus so it's anywhere from you know what we want what we envision ourselves to be anywhere from five to 15 years in the future that what is our vision to what we want to be it should be um audacious or big like something something that we're really striving to not just you know we'll have better doors on the building buildings but something really a you know a highlevel vision that we want to have um it should be the rallying cry for for staff for the board everyone should be able to look at our vision statement and see th this is what we want to be this is the type of organization that we want to be and everyone should be able to to coales and get behind that Vision um so it's basically where do we want to go and what are we trying to achieve in a very general sense not specific just the big um short brief thing one of our facilitators that we had a while back um said that for their particular District their believe it was their Vision they was a diploma and every hand so that that was you know a vision that they brought it's very concise high level and it's something that everyone you know can get behind the difference between the vision and Mission in my estimation is that Miss is a little more specific it provides the direction the strategies the goals that that we will work towards in order to get to that Vision so if if we took the example of a diploma in every hand as the vision then the mission might be you know make sure that there are quality teachers make sure that there's parent involvement make sure you know the the the mission will be a little more specific and it'll describe how we plan to get to the um to the vision and it's all of the what is stated in the mission statement should also be linked to our strategic plan so there's more but I don't want to get too much into it because I see a hand up and I want to make sure that we all have a a part in discussing what we're what we see as vision and Mission so trusty Chavez I saw your hand up um I guess for me mine would be all students at grade level and above but what so but in terms of just the concept so I don't are you talking about that as a vision or as a mission um uh that would be as a vision you know like he said a diploma in everybody's hand so mine would you know when they all started working towards that I remember Mr I think it was uh Mr aruro when he said that and then um I envisioned at the time all students at grade level and above and I know that that's pushing it but that's what ultimately we want for all the students okay or at least I do I'm not speaking for everybody just me okay so that's a specific example of of what you see as a vision any any other my colleagues have not necessarily yet your what you think the vision is or the mission but just the way I describe what I thought vision and Mission to be is is there a disagreement with that or is everyone on board with the them as with what I said as Concepts I I agree with those uh with the way the way in which you described the difference between those two things so okay um more than anything I would like to understand what uh you never mind I'll listen and then if uh if I don't get the response that I'm looking at then I'll chime in again okay or obviously feel free to chime in at any time because we're I mean this is a open discussion here so you know is there gonna be a a more of a framework in through which we can work into because you know if we were there somebody would be standing at the board and uh we'd all kind of understand how we're moving this makes it a little bit more different because of the situation we're in so I'd like to know how we can make it more productive so we all give our input and are we gon to take it piece by piece or what's the strategy on on getting through this without having to be here till two in the morning yeah so first of all when you say a framework I think was the word do you mean like having some visuals up to see as we're having the discussion yeah or um can you let us know how you plan on slicing up this so that we can so I can kind of just get a mental image as to how we're how we're gonna be knocking off piece by piece I just kind of get wna want to get a path so that I know that we're not just jumping into one thing and then going into another yeah because I think that it's going to be very um not as efficient uh yeah that's a great um question and some and I see you trusty I'll get to you after I respond to the question the way I was thinking about it but certainly open to um you know other ideas from the board or actually Mr Ruiz as well um I was thinking one of two ways either if individuals have specific areas they wanted to um address that we could take them um we can go through the document and as those particular areas come up with someone where where the areas where someone has edits or questions or suggestions we can attack them as we go through the document or um or B basically that that's the way that I was intending to do it is putting the document up and kind of going through Section by section and And discussing any um edits or or suggestions that people have but that that's what I was thinking I'm not I was gonna ask um our Council if that if that seemed efficient I would meet the needs of what we need to do but also open it up to to all of you my colleagues as well trusty Lera Loa I saw your hand up I was just gonna um I think mention the same thing so I agree so I agree first with your mission and vision and the way you see those um and then going back to this you know I prepared in that way you know going just like the agenda says going through the governance book I know uh Linda already brought up some areas she wants to focus on so I agree you know going to those areas that we'd like to focus on then eventually you know going to 302 which is a vision statement and then 303 which is the mission statement um just let's do it okay any any other uh questions or suggestions I have no I'm just wondering on if um like uh kto had said I I can't Vision what we are doing how we're proceeding forward and if we're going to asked to kind of like let's dissect this and we take you know piece by piece by piece um and is it going to be um the president pulling out the ones that he wants to get first to right or is it going to be a group consensus of where because we all seem to have um our own um our own targets that we have been going through this and we want to make sure this gets in there and that gets that or gets put back um oh and are you going to be working from um from the the book that we're having tonight of what um where we're moving forward correct yes the ones that roia was was was referring to yes that's the yeah CU that that that's a little problem for me because like um my uh my colleague Chavez said um that a lot of was omitted from the ' 08 the S 0708 and then a lot was omitted from 12 and so um I'm just wondering it's going to be a lot to remember to just work with this and then uh and not have the other things in front of us really but I understand we have to do what the state is waiting for us to do because we're on a timeline yeah but somehow we need to really get back to um you know to what was omitted that was important to us okay so so why don't we then move forward as was stated so we will so um Mr R just to in terms of the agenda itself um I know we need to do public comment and and that's what I intend to do first before we get going now that we've had this kind of broad discussion um so we'll do public comment but then in the items in Number Three um the is because the content of what we'll be talking about is kind of in my mind all it interweaves into one item into the other how specific do we need to attack or address them the items as agendized um not at all especially since you're willing to be flexible in terms of of uh receiving public comment and just listening to the board comments and just considering you know these types of exercises you always want to focus on the areas for easy agreement or what seem to be easy agreement and it sounds like uh all five of you are very focused on mission and vision statements and so I think it's perfectly fine to to to address those out of order okay so we don't need to call anything out specifically just consider it as one item three okay okay so um with all that being said at this time I'm going to go ahead and um call for for public comment so this is the time hopefully people with our little discussion have had the chance to if they want to provide any public comment at this time to um provide public comment on item three which includes 3.01 3.02 and 3.03 um and they I mentioned the ways to provide public comments so Mr Sanchez do we have or Mr Gil do we have any public comment at this time currently we do not have any public comments coming in through email okay and Mr gild do we have any public comment no we do not have any hand raised okay thank you okay so we can move forward then so um at this time I know just very briefly now that we've kind of T so what I'm thinking about is going into Vision first because I think vision is where we have to start that's my opinion it's it's the big goal it's what are we trying to get to it's what are we trying to be then moving into the mission how do what specifically are we going to do to get to that vision and then into the the specifics of the handbook so that's a little more of a breakdown of how I'm thinking about it unless there's some big objection to that um and I don't see any hands raised right now so I will ask marel can marel can you share the screen um of the pdfp PowerPoint that Dr Bower had provided and I know do um trusty Marquez I don't know if you have or this is in your board book so you should be able to see it's in the back of the board pack it's in the back of the board so that's what we're just going to kind of quickly review just to give us a little idea of what other districts have used I know we use the example that's a great place to start okay thank you um and like I said we use the diploma in every hand just because that's when we heard a while back but this is um this is going to be a few more versions of those examples once we can get them up here on the screen meanwhile any other questions or anything significant anyone wants to um ask or contribute okay time's up because the PowerPoint is up okay so these are just uh sample statements that were drawn from districts similar to ours some of them I know and some maybe not as much but um kind of a a little hodg podge of of examples trusty Chavez uh yes did I also sent you from the um csba and also the uh scoy from the Santa Clara Office of Education their vision and mission statements I believe I emailed you and Dr Bower and uh the secretary M um did you get those uh email or text I don't remember I did receive that from you I think it was pictures and text also when I went to the state I was surprised to see that they had it there Santa Rosa and Santa Clara County they had the same one so I took pictures of it when I was there and over there at all those locations so to kind of you know email it so you could see what page they were on uhuh so once we go through this little um presentation here if you want to add those just verbally because I don't think we had time to put it with the materials for the meeting tonight but you can certainly um put them into the into the pot here of examples of vision and mission statements okay so mighty belel can you just kind of um go through and uh let's see should we have people read them out Dr bow do you wantan my voice gets kind of scratchy from talking so um maybe someone else can read the statements I think there are some people maybe that are listening calling in to the line and listening that may not have access to the visual so if we can just read them out if you want me I'll help you with that okay thank you and this is just uh rer rating division statement just as board president and this is the big overarching gold the very bold so Mar if you go to the next slide this is uh alumrock vision statement um that was said as I moved in as a superintendent and under the mission under the vision statements uh were the the beg the very first priority areas that the board and I crafted together along with stakeholder uh input during my first year as a superintendent um and so this is just for to a reminder to the board of what we've been working with so the vision at the time um was and and because I have a a little a little Box covering let me just go to the to the PowerPoint itself um every student in the alumrock school district will be a creative collaborative and confident individuals with the competencies that will enable them to thrive in a diverse and competitive world and the three um priority areas during this first um five years almost six number one all English Learners will attain Proficiency in English within three years in our district to red Des all middle schools with a College and Career focus and three incre increased parent engagement Lind hasz I have a a question when we got ding from the state um one of the reasons we got ding was because the mission and vision statements that we had in the uh district office is the year said 2005 so when I was speaking when I um with Dr Bower where were they and she said that she was embarrassed be and so she ripped them up so there clearly there was a plan before so where what did we have before in 2005 what was that vision and mission statement I don't think I have ripped up anything thy chave uh yes that's what you told me I'm just going by what you told me when I asked when we got dinged when I was president of the board so is there a specific um is it just out of curiosity that you want to know what the what the um I'm surpris was at that time or yes that that I'm surprised that that one wasn't put on here because that was alen Rock's uh vision and mission statement before I mean if you're going to make a comparisons of um school districts I think you should also compare your own what you had up there before that was clearly on the wall uh in the district office yeah I'm just I guess I'm just curious about why I mean how why would we not then go back four years before that and four year like what I'm I guess I'm trying to understand why we need to continue to go back and back and back if we're because did we the reason that I'm saying that we have to go back is because for example this is just an example 5 years ago it was put that we were going to that that the board then was going to allocate the money to do all these repairs and then five years later those repairs still were not done so sometimes yes you must move forward but you also have to address what you already voted in on before and make sure that all of those things were accompl lished do you know what I mean yeah I mean I understand I understand where you're coming from I I I think I have a different perspective about how to think about this tonight but I do understand your your perspective on that um do you trusty is your hand up or you yes I just wanted to um you know mention um I was a part of the stakeholders to put this together um and I'm glad that I because at first you know I'm like I thought I read it we were talking about other districts but you know I think and the now um I understand Chavez you know in regards to going back you know and getting better right or learning from that um but I and and I think here in the now um it's important to um and then move um you know can you can you repeat what you just said I'm sorry I think you kind of broke up a little bit so just repeat after yeah after you said in the now I think okay here in the now I think it's important to focus on like what we I'm very have seen this it did involve you know various stakeholders um board members staff parents Community um to to see if this is even where we're at right now right like just like Chavis said let's look and see if we're growing um and then my internet is UN I shouldn't even mention it other than you know I think Chavez when we dive when we de dive deep into it next year you know where it would be a good idea to bring those back if you have access to them to then see if it's something that you know we want to maybe take on or we haven't really touched on um and in purposes of today I'm glad to see this you know so we can move forward trusty ches um I think also we have to keep in mind that we have to follow through on what was promis and what was said before if the previous board said hey we're going to get this done and then they never got it done I mean if we want to make sure that you know the public trusts us we should follow through on what we say and we should follow through on whatever promises were made before too don't you think I do how can they trust us if we're not going to follow through on the things that the previous board said they were going to do then we should you know like this is like a relay you you have to take the Baton and whatever was said before you have we have to follow through with it so what I what I think it's our word president I pres Bano can I say something um yes go ahead thank you so I have been here the longest of and of all of you put together um and and I have I have been in three committees where the mission and the Visions were all put together and yes somewhere along in there somebody dropped the ball and uh stopped posting them and I don't know why they did they stopped posting them or what but we've always had them posted in the right in the lobby in every school when you walked in they were posted they were they were supposed to be posted and I'll tell you why because that was validating those stakeholders the parents and the stakeholders and whatever member was assigned or was you know was on those committees to be part of those visions and those statement and those missions and somewhere um that they're not there anymore and that they couldn't be found and that we can only go back to just TW 2012 13 that that that is very hard for me to believe that's extremely hard for me to believe cuz they there somewhere unless somebody went in and just really cleaned out and threw everything out without even realizing what they were doing now that's a big no no okay so to trust other but that's to valid date those parents and those stakeholders that were there because what they were envisioning it was important to them and for them to look at a new set and they're saying that's we came up with a better when we were there I was on that committee and we came up with a better Vision we came up with a better statement you know Mission and the and um and a vision you know um and you know it just it's just that we we need we really need to see for the staff to go back and find whatever we can find from what was there and those people what they said was value to them you will see that it was what we are valuing as well and there's probably more to there or less to there in in different occasions because I served on three Committees of of the of the vision and the mission okay so to move forward a little bit um I I I think my I agree with trusta I certainly see the value in in and the wisdom in what you're saying about you know that we obviously can't start from scratch every four years or every two years and develop new things every couple years and I like the analogy of kind of passing the Baton and carrying the Baton what I will add to that though um is that yes a a set of stakeholders and board members developed something eight years ago 12 years ago whatever that many of those things that they develop clearly in in what's presented to us tonight are still valid but I think the other point that I want to just bring up is that environments change so so the whatever was developed eight or 12 years ago first of all a number of those families and students may have I mean there's always brothers and sisters but they may have already cycled through our district so those that input at that time that those boards were working on carrying forward may be a little bit different additionally now we're you know we're on this additionally right now addition excuse me excuse me so additionally um you know the offended what you said additionally the um the environment has changed as well so we are dealing the reason why we're having these calls in this thing is because the next five or 10 or 15 years could look very different so um visions and goals that were established 12 years ago may not be reflective of the realities that we're confronting in the next 10 to 15 years so we should carry forward those things that that are significant and and relevant to the current and future time but we should also consider that you know things shift over time and and the work the what guides our work should should adapt to those shifts as well um so I don't I certainly don't discount the work that was done in the past I'm just saying that it's a balance between some of that past work but also recognizing movement towards the future so can I say something now because I was very offended by what you said because as people have already gone through or they no no they haven't because I'm one of those people that have been in my community over 50 years I didn't move in here it didn't not I I mean I moved here when I was 18 years old so I have been here all my life and there are many of other people like me that have had generations and generations here in Alam Rock and so to say that the times have changed and no that's what vision and Mission are for we're not supposed to get into such a specific that we're like we're Antiquated because we said we said this and we said that back then when we were looking at the mission and the vision in there we're supposed to be looking at it because it will fit any any year any future those those values are still there and everybody knows that that's a second thought because technology has moved us forward it's a second thought because now we're working out of the box but those values those core values is what we should be working in working on because that first one that says all English Learners will be proficient in three years I don't I don't ever receiving a a a report saying we did it all of them you know in three years they were done you know we so we shouldn't box ourselves into putting you know putting a timeline or a time frame in that because that's not what a mission or a vision is about putting a timeline you know on some things that may but but for the most part it should be a mission that ER says wow so they're still striving on that because they hav had a lot of successes or they're going to turn around saying wow they're still doing they're still doing that look at 2020 that the Silicon valy TW by 2020 there will be no more dropouts that's not true we still deal with the dropouts so it so I it is I have been through these so many times that I have just one comment value what was there before and if we're going to word something make it meaningful that it is a meaningful core value that's it okay thank you so Dr Bower can you can we move to the next slide now and and we'll just take a few more of these examples of vision statements from other districts sure so the very this is from the beresa Union School District and we're doing this for the benefit of people who are on the phone marel can you please go back to berasa just so that I can read and other people can thean Union School District will be recog for educational excellence and Innovative and inclusive student center learning environment inspiring students staff Community the next one is from Evergreen uh and it vision statement Evergreen Elementary School District in partnership with the community will be a place where teachers staff and students are Partners in developing each St st's unique potential and finally Long Beach Unified School District div Vision says every student responsible productive citizen in a diverse and competitive world and I think try Chavez has the sample from sko um I believe she wanted to share that uh um Mr Beano I believe I sent that to you do you want to read it out or do you want me to uh you can read it out I don't have it pulled up here on my screen okay I got to pull it up I'm sorry I wasn't expecting to be called on just yet uh hold on let me see if I could go to the pics looking forward okay so did you want to hear the csba first um the vision was the California school boards Association is the essential voice for public education we Inspire our members to be knowledgeable leaders extraordinary go governance practitioners and Ardent advocates for all students so the reason I sent that one is because in we could Wordsmith it by putting in our own words if we wanted to match what the csba and the skoy and Sacramento had as their Vision but this was just an example I'm not saying hey it's got to be done this way like Beano says I'm not married to this was just examples that I took around the state and this is the mission one can I read that too while I'm while I pulled it up yes okay the csba strengthens and pro promotes School Board governance we Define and drive the public education policy agenda through advocacy training and member services strong local Boards of Education are essential to ensure a high quality quality education for every student in every community now this one I am going to push because this one was mine okay since I'm reading them out I might as well read mine so mine was Finding solutions by coming together with parents teachers administrators and lawmakers for the good and the benefit of all students I added lawmakers because of everything that's been happening with the covid everything that happened uh with us going to Sacramento trying to advocate for more money for the students thank you okay thank you Mar do you have the ability on the share screen function to do a a whiteboard I know sometimes on mine I believe it allows that I don't I don't know if I have that function if you do annotate you can do that so you have to go to the share screen and then it gives you the option you can pick one of those options yeah and then you can give people the right to there you go there you go and can you type or do you have to write I think you can type right there you go so um what I'm proposing right now is we have to work with what we have in front of us right now so you know considering the statements made by trusty Chavez and trusty Marquez that we will we will revisit this when we have that past information in front of us to um you know to look at that and consider it as if we want to modify this living document but you don't you don't need to type that Maribel um what I wanted you to ask you to type is I don't know if other trustees have also come up with a what they like a starting point for a vision statement like trusty Chavez just said so I was hoping to have trusty Chavez's put up there we already sent it to you excuse me for interrupting I just sent it to you Dr Bower and marel okay okay thank you that's very helpful so I remember in 2019 when Dr Bower asked everybody to come up with a vision and a mission that was mine then okay so did you might Bella and you check your email and see if you could just copy and paste that um to your a text oh it's in a text oh whoops I could email it if you want instead is it better that I email it uh president Beano I'm assuming marel can more easily um just cut and paste it there so we can all see what we're working from trusty era or trusty kto do you have any things specifically that you were G you were going to want to put on the floor as a um kind of like a starting point my only start starting point was that one that um we worked on with other members of the community the stakeholders the one we just read the one that Dr Bower has in the um yeah in the present presentation okay so can you put the Whiteboard back up mighty Ben or are you working on getting the email from I am working on getting a truste Travis's uh email so I can put it up okay so while you do that I'll I'll just say mine um that I had thought of so I tried to think about you know feedback that we've had from the community over time on other issues my own thoughts and and and um you know just discussions that we've had so the vision statement that I roughly kind of was going to put out there is arusd will use adversity as a springboard for opportunity to develop the resourcefulness creativity and resilience that allow our students to compete at any level and the reason why um the specific reasons and I'm kind of feeling time while might does that but I also want to explain so the reason why I really wanted to call out adversity as a springboard for opportunity is because just in general you know our district socioeconomic conditions and everything in our districts for many students um provides or they they cause some adversity to develop whether it's language barriers or economic or all the different challenges that our students have and I think it's important to call that out as part of our vision and and recognize that but also to call it out as as something that we can use and and focus on that as an opportunity for our students I think those of us I know myself trusty ketto seever I mean several people on this call also came through Alam Rock and through East San Jose and and we've faced our own adversities and I think the theme that I see for many people is that they they don't use that adversity as a as an excuse to not accomplish they use it as as a a drive or or um you know it springboards them to understand they use it as a strength to to be successful in life and so I I thought that that's important to call out and then the the things that I think that that helps to develop in our students that I believe are important characteristics in the in the current and future world resourcefulness creativity and resilience I think that those are specific things to our district that the conditions create in our students and I think are valuable assets to them for them to have going forward in their education and into their future lives so and those and I think having skills will allow them to compete from I don't care where from anybody that those particular um skills I think will put I I'll put a alen rock student up against anyone from any District if they have developed resourcefulness creativity and resilience so as I said I'm also trying to fill time sobody be do you have there good job or does anyone else have any um I don't I haven't received a trusty Chavez's email yet uh can you can you just put the Whiteboard back up mighty Ben okay and then we'll just have how about you just um you just say it trusty Travis okay finding solutions by be try to go a little bit slow but okay sorry finding solutions by coming together by coming with parents with parents comma teachers comma administrators and lawmakers with a little hyphen and then for the good and benefit of all students lawmakers is one word what else for the good and benefit the good and you forgot four oh four good and benefit of all students and capitalize all students um or not whatever you want whatever you want to do is fine there you go with a exclamation point like you're giving a shout out thank you okay thank you might Bell and then can you do the same thing for this one that I'll read to you um the the one that I had up what's that to add another text box another text box yes or if you have to just a couple of spaces and then or like return there you go so the one that I have is arusd will use adversity as a springboard for opportunity to develop the resourcefulness creativity close enough creativity and resilience that allow our students to compete or resilience can you help me r r e s i l i n c e r e r s i l i n c e c e there you go um that allow our students to compete oops to compete at any level and I have any all capitalized too but it doesn't [Laughter] matter okay and then um do we need to have the current district one added here or can people just look at it separately on their own can we just say refer to current District blah blah blah blah okay well so each one of us trustees just um have maybe minimized on your screen I don't know what your setups are but have the current one that you're able to look at and reference and so um are you m I'm thinking we'll we can take the next few minutes and just get some feedback bounce around because we have they're kind of different different um state ments so oh from the district yeah the current district one the one that it's in the PowerPoint so first before we um move forward um I'll ask is there any thoughts or feedback from trusty Quintero ER loera or Marquez on these two that were brought up anything not and not if you like it as a whole but just ideas Concepts words thoughts that you like that you would like to um wrap into what we end up finalizing on and if you need us to read it again trusty Marquez we can reread them I don't know you may not have them to look at in front of you no I don't have them to look in front of me I just okay can you just do a quick uh edit on the opportunity it's missing the r and so is resourcefulness okay how do you pay well we'll we'll clean it up but I don't know if you actually can paste it in here maybe you won't be able to I think I'm G have to actually but um I'll read you those trusty Marquez just so you can hear them again so one of the ones that was uh proposed as an option to play with at least is finding solutions by coming together with parents teachers administrators and lawmakers for the good and benefit of all students so that's one potential Vision the second one is arusd will use adversity as a springboard for opportunity to develop the resourcefulness and creativity resourcefulness comma creativity and resilience that allow our students to compete at any level so that's so we have and then we have uh now I got to find the current board one you should have have the current board one um trusty mod I have it I I have it so that's kind of what we have in front of us right now to either I mean we can certainly just if we all agreed or at least a majority agreed on one we can vote that one in we can do some word smithing and and combine or delete we can kind of play with it now so um and it would be helpful Mighty Bell if if you could get the uh the current one up there just by typing it out as we're as we're talking that might be helpful yeah that's what I'm doing okay perfect trusty Marquez did I hear you start saying something yeah so I so then for me I I think that I would like just I can go with the vision that Long Beach put in there because everybody wants every student to be responsible productive citizen in a diverse you know World in a very competitive world you know and those are core values that we all believe in that's what we want for students now just a comment and not a criticism on the other two that were there those are great for the mission because this is what in a mission we want to say to finding Solutions and come coming together and you know and where we add more to the vision of how how we're going to get there how we're going to get to the to the vision um and the same one with yours um there are some things in there that would probably could go into a vision but the majority of it would I I look at it more as a mission you know of of of things that we're actually going to do to get to where the vision you know took us but that's just my comment and and if she if she can put up long beaches on there I'm just putting my name on there because that one is just right to the point clear and concise okay so for anyone that's listening on the phone I'll just read out the Long Beach one again um as Mar Bell is typing in the current dist Alam Rock one The Long Beach vision statement is every student a responsible productive citizen in a diverse and competitive world okay uh I think it says different right there I think you read will be responsible and she put creative is that I'm which one is it no this is for she's typing in the Alam Rock one right now the one I the one I read out was just for people that are listen I don't I don't I can't tell who's just listening on the phone or not so I don't know if everyone can see this so I'm just reading out for people listening only through audio what that Long Beach statement was um so I'll given what we have right now as myel continues to work so right now we have a suggestion from um trusty chave and mighty Bell if you grab the the little I think you probably know this but if you grab the little circle on the side of the text box you can widen it out and that'll that one or the one right on the side below that and drag yeah yeah but the one in the middle because I think that one yeah pull that one to the right and then it'll shorten it up there you go there we go so U I lost my train of thought but so we have a um suggestion from a few people uh off the off their own thoughts one from Long Beach and the Alam Rock one um I don't hear any other comments right now so one thing that I'm thinking is maybe what do what do you all think about can we look at the four that we have in front of us and look for common words or themes that we want to capture that that to the best to the extent possible kind of incorporate um the thoughts of the four that we have in front of us would that be an approach that everyone would be open to or any other thoughts trusta did you have your hand up I can't really see okay and tryo I'm assuming thumbs up I think that's a good idea okay um and I'll also just ask Dr Bower do you have any any thoughts um on what we're doing or thoughts about the process or just to incorporate your thoughts into this as well as part of the team um you know I think that um I I kind I agree with um try Marquez about the long beach in terms of being suen and something because it is important for people to remember right this is what it's a call to action and we don't need you know we need to get a a phrase something quick you mentioned that at the very beginning trusty Beano and that has been something that we have grappled you know this past couple of years because we're like okay what did we say you know and and unless you have it in front of us it's hard to remember but I think right a just a a in a in the vision statement something like it's very concise to the point that we all can remember um it's very powerful that's my two sense okay yeah that's a good point I think I know for myself I get caught up in wanting to include lots of things and and you know get caught up in my thoughts but sometimes less is more and so um that's a very important point so just off the top looking at what I see here and and we don't have the yeah we do have Alum Rock a couple of things go ahead a couple of things that I see kind of repeated in some way shape or form one is um the thought or the concept of like the world that that the students will go into so one of them says two of them say competitive world one of them says compete at any level um the other one says the good and benefit of all students so you could kind of interpret that as the future benefit so I think a theme that I see common common to all four really is some some wording about um um you know the world the world stud future world yeah the future world for students so might better below that and this is really brainstorming right now so that you know we're throwing what do they say throwing stuff against the wall and we're going to see what we end up with what sticks so marel can you just kind of as words that we're throwing up what did you say future for students future world future world for students um I see the the word diverse excuse me I think we should put Alam Rock students I and I noticed I didn't put Alam rock on anything but I did but can can you add alen Rock students please yeah there you go thank you and again again this is you know these are not exact right now so we're just kind of free flowing whatever you know we see so the future world for Alam Rock students something about that seems like is a common theme um I see I see the word diverse and competitive world what's the other one um well those are both the same diverse and competitive world um can I ask you a question yes on the parents teachers administrators and lawmakers now more than any other time because of the covid everybody the parents are more involved the the and we're asking these lawm makers is this what our future looks like is that what should be on there or is this just a short epic dur during these students lives I don't know trusty Chavez can I comment on that um just to pigy back on yours I think that that would be a very good point in the mission because you know our homes have become schools our parents have become teachers you know uh and so I think that is something we could incorporate in the mission okay thank you for saying that I I I see your point and I agree with you okay thank you okay um so I'm trying to think so how just not exactly how it's gonna how would it would go in but just as a little couple of words how would you encapsulate that how would you capture that stakeholders okay all stakeholders so just the word stakeholders for now and that that's fine for now it's come out so stakeholders is a common theme there um do we need to put a all in front of it all stakeholders now like I said we're just throwing stuff up we're spitballing we're just throwing stuff up here once we once we once we commit it to to a phrase then we'll you know we'll put the bells and whistles in and make it make it right um let's see um sorry I had to say this little critique um when when you say adversity um it kind of makes them me think of kids at a disadvantage and I don't think that kids should be told that they're at a disadvantage because they have every opportunity every other kid has if they apply themselves so it to me it kind of makes it feel like you feel sorry for the poor kid and and I don't agree with that but if you guys agree with that then you know there's you know I'll vote for what the everybody wants but that's just my two cents thank you uh president M yes you know I I'd love to that would be the real case that we were all on equal footing but uh as a business person I think you would understand money and numbers and the fact of the matter is that we don't have the same cash that let's say palalo has and so that are in a in a capital system in which we're part free market um puts you at a heavy disadvantage when we don't have the resources that other places have and so I like I've told our friends out there in the western part of the valley um if you want to go ahead and take our local control funding uh and have it all as long as we can exchange all the problems that our kids in the east side face I guarantee you everybody would hand over the cash and say here you go as long as we can trade problems um and so to make a statement like that I feel is very and I know it's your opinion but I'm going to retort uh to that statement with the facts and the facts of the matter is that we're not an equal footing our community is at a disadvantage and when you when when you're going to put Apples to Apples MoneyWise just just at that we can just start with that and I see you trusty Chavez and also trusty I just want to ask a general question that I don't expect an answer to but a question for us to consider because I do take your point um trusty Chavez and you know words within these things will trigger each one of us in different ways like when I see lawmakers and and you know I I don't have a particular or connotation negative about that but some May so words will trigger individuals differently but my question is as we're doing this um you know are we creating this mission statement as something that ourselves and our staff can look at everything are we doing Mission or the vision are we doing Vision or yes thank you Vision I'm sorry um you know is this something as trust as Dr B mentioned like when she's doing a retreat or when we're having a big discussion that we can look at and really you know consolidate our thought or or is our focus on this more outward facing that we want the community to know exactly what we're doing I I would imagine it's a it's a balance somewhere in between there but I think we should consider that who is is this vision and mission for is it to guide the work of the board and the staff or is it to um I don't know provide transparency or or or information to the community so like I said not a question to answer rhetorical but a thought so trusty Chavez I saw your hand and then trusty ATA after that and then may I yes after that trusty Mar I don't want to take up too much time but let me tell you a really quick story uh my kids I I didn't take them I didn't send them to James lick they went to Santa Teresa so over there everybody looked at them as the poor East Side kids I I do get what um kto is saying with trusty GTO um but the thing is is they never looked at themselves in a negative way which was great but even though everybody was calling them that it didn't matter they still thrived more than the ones that were calling them that so I think that it they're they think that they can do anything that they want they can accomplish anything they want so just my two sents and maybe I'll have uh something else to say but now offline I I would like to talk to tring of that's all right just you know offline you mean background okay sounds good thank you for that trusty I was just gonna say um you know in agreement um with it all you know even with what Travis just mentioned I come from adversary adversity and with it um but you know focusing in today's uh Vision um and what we're trying to do I think you mentioned like we want to get the words that are coming out in most of them you know I don't see that as one I'm not saying we we shouldn't have it but I think you know let's focus on what we're doing um you know bringing out the words that that are most of them um one of the words that I wanted to point out and I'm sorry my inter my internet connection is unstable so I'm can't really we can hear you right we can hear you can you do the last sentence you said because I really want to hear what you said but you came out chopping go ahead that's exactly what I was saying my computer was telling me my internet connection was off so I don't know if there was any point in speaking is what I was saying right now you're coming across clear I I'd like to hear it okay so let's focus on the words I think that are coming out um you know adversity is not one that's coming out in all four I'm not saying we shouldn't have it but let's bring out all of those and maybe see you know we can come up with something um you know maybe we add it at the end I don't know but if you you still kind of broke up a little bit but um uh it sounds like you're saying it sounds like you're saying to continue to look for themes that that are across the and then the other thing I was gonna tell you trusty era Lera is that if you look at the the invite for tonight's meeting as an option you might want to call in so for your audio you can call in on the phone and that might be better audio so I I think that that would be different because trusty M sounds great tonight so I think if you call in for your audio you know the video can freeze but we'll hear you clearly through the the call-in number okay something let me go get my okay uh trusty Marquez and then trusty kto after that so um I and and please this is not criticism or anything only our thoughts and when I heard that that same word that um we disgusting um it that my first thought was Oh no you're you're doing the halves and half knots you know and that's not what I would like to see there about talking about the halves and the half knots and immediately I got to tell you what movie came to my mind and then St and deliver you know they were pretty much like our kids here in this community but they beat the odds didn't they but because they didn't give up but we shouldn't we shouldn't have to make them feel you know like you have to try cuz even he said so we have to try harder you know we have to try harder and and for some of us we're gonna we're gonna try harder but we shouldn't have to you know pressure them into trying harder or doing just to say do your best you know do your best because we know you can do it you've been studying with this we've been we've been there with you from the beginning we've been coaching you you know um but it it was again for me since I heard that but I didn't want to offend anybody but I I wanted to make it a safe place for all of us to talk to stay that to me brought immediately the halves and the half not and I want our all children to say yes you can do it you know this is what we expect because we know that we we're going to deliver for you and you're going to deliver for us thank you for saying that trusty Marquez because I something I probably should have said and I'll get to you right now trusty kto but um I should have said this upfront so this I I think we're already doing this but this discussion is totally like you said trusty Mar is a safe place I don't take any of the anything any feedback anyone says as you know personal or you know constructive constructive criticism is good it's getting us towards where we need to be so I you know I just want to make sure that we all understand that this is not a personal thing this is we're just you know all working towards the same goal of getting you know getting something good here so thank you for calling that out we should all feel safe for whatever comments we have and not take things personally just um work as professional mov forward yes thank you for that trusty I mean trusty kto hey um so well to the point of the standing delivered heus galante's words were that you have to push uh St beond where they're at and so yeah I think you mentioned that not pressuring them or not his whole deal was to push them Beyond where they're at and so that they'll only succeed if they are pushed to go further so I yeah I don't I just want to make sure I remember that was his position I remember you're doing a lecture to one of your classes and in one of that when you had mentioned it to us in a board meeting so okay so let me um I'm going to just do no but that was not what I wanted to talk about I just wanted to clarify you can put your hand I'll go next go after that a different a different understanding of work um one of the things that I think is important for us as a district to do is to go ahead and take a look at districts and I know that some uh we've gotten some examples but I think it's important for us to look at other districts that are dealing with the same type of socioeconomic uh type of situations so therefore the Long Beach examples are great but we also need to look at folks that are really uh having great amounts of success uh without having to resort to hand over all their schools to to Chargers because that not that doesn't necessarily even bring you success it brings you the promise a lot of promises but not a lot of delivery and so um Union City New Jersey happens to be uh referenced as this uh place that hasn't had to resort to privatizing all their education to try to achieve success they've done it with the completely public school system um with like 96% of their kids um being um English language learn it's like a really really heavy immigrant community and they're having some great success there and so I'd like to go ahead and U uh take the opportunity to show their mission statement it's not quite concise but I think there may be what district is this I did Union City New Jersey they're they're in the east coast so it's a little bit different so yeah okay all right Are there specific oh sorry Are there specific words or phrases that you want to have Mighty B put up that that are you feel are there significant parts of theirs or you want to um you know what I I was thinking that I could just jump it onto the chat uh board and then people can look at it and see if it kind of oh we don't the chat is not enabled in the meeting okay so two that are uned so um well I guess I'll have to decide which is the best stuff I thought there was a couple of things in there so you know what I'll email it to m and um and then she can go ahead and um grab stuff that I think she she should highlight okay okay so um I I see your hand trusty Chavez just let me give a quick response since that was uh the a little bit of the conversation was around that word adversity so I just wanted to kind of clarify a little bit more my thoughts of when I put that um you know as I mentioned I I was proudly one of those James lick kids who went to James lick and and you know H here I here I am you know know fast forward a 100,000 years and you know I've been able to to be successful as as many have mentioned we want our kids to feel that they can do it and reach some level of success whatever that might be um but when I put use the word adversity so I for me I see the word adversity as as a strength like I've always seen whenever someone ask me about my experience in Alam rock or in East San Jose I I think that the adversity that I have faced personally or my community has faced is the strength of our community I feel that because of that adversity we we develop tools we develop a can do attitude we develop I mean the term C like that is no matter the adversity it can be done and so when I when I Ed the word adversity what I had in my mind I was thinking of the vision statement more in terms of um like something as a tool for staff and teachers so that when teachers um you know see many of our students who are coming with you know they didn't get dinner last night or the whatever issues that some of some of the students may have that they that they look at our some of our students and say you know this kid has X Y and Z challenges but they're here today to learn they're here to to do their best so I'm G to devote myself to use their um overcoming their adversity as a a motivator for me to do even more to allow them to have the opportunity for Success so so just to kind of close it up for we go to tery Chavez that was kind of my framework in thinking that that um that a staff member or one of us as a board might look at whether it's budget cuts that we're having to decide on or the kid that comes to class with no jacket on a cold day that it makes us all frame that resilience and that adversity as a strength in that individual a strength in the district that we can build upon to to to make us stronger um so that was that was my thought but as trusty chis is refering to I'm not married to it I just um you know someone that's your statement someone mentioned sent me a text one of our um and I say m you said I was next yeah I'm just gonna say the word Challen the word challenges was also suggested like if it helps understand more adversity so trust or marel did you have a question um trusty can share his um screen with us if he wants to and uh so we can you guys that way you guys can see it that way too okay so why don't we have trusty Chavez go ahead and make your comment while we set up um trusty kto screen and then once you're done trusty kto can speak to his item on the screen okay since you wanted to say that we also need to be looking at the future I've gone to a lot of graduation and a lot of them were the Spanish speaking ones that they didn't even speak a word of English when they first started and a lot of Tri a lot of them attributed their success to graduating is because somebody believed in them and because somebody believed in them and they believed in themselves and they were able to accomplish what was expected of them um that's just my two cents so going forward is that something that might be added so what what like what words would or phrase would you use to capture that that we believe in these kids that they can do whatever they all right right there We believe We Believe put that put that m in that part down where it says stakeholders next to that we believe in and the children we believe in students yeah because like I remember in November when when they did that when they did like a presentation that these kids aren't doing well because of this because of that because of that to me that was an excuse if the students really want to do well they will and it's up to us to instill it in them that they're good students that they could do anything that they want to accomplish okay thank you and so I just also want to do a quick time check so we're about halfway through um our agenda time on this meeting and we need to cover vision mission and then the rest of the thing too so let's um to the extent possible I think we're we have a good sense of where we're all coming from um so let's try to keep our comments a little brief right now so we can make sure we get through this and begin you know to talk to yeah that's all hopefully you can hear me but uh we have from 5:30 to 7:30 initially right uh I thought it was 9:30 I have 7:30 on mine and I heard you say halfway through so I just wanted to make sure sure you were aware uh Dr Bower or Marella we agenda till 7:30 or 9:30 I thought only at gendai till 7:30 I'm looking at it right now I was wishful thinking Wonder we were going so slow I could have okay president uh Dr bow just reminder to the board that you can the meeting for one time good time if the board wants to extend it um I'm just reminding you that agenda till 7:30 okay um I moved to move the meeting for another three hours I'm not saying we're going to go to three hours but I'm just saying so we don't have to give us a cushion yes thank you and I have an 11y old that I might step out for so just so you guys know um that's that's fine I had to gize myself to 8:30 because I saw 7:30 and but I know us I should know better that's why it's hard for me to do meetings on this week but I'll keep pushing forward in the future okay that that's fine we understand um you know the realities so there's a motion can we say 10:30 like yes um so there's a motion on the floor to extend us to 10:30 with the understanding that we don't need to go that long um is there a second to that motion I'll second it so nobody well I can't second it um so for we want another that means we want another hour maybe like till 9:30 so for the purposes so we're in discussion now on this motion I I certainly uh don't none of us wants to be here you know all the way for five hours that length of time so um we can all be very conscious to and keep ourselves accountable within the next hour to an hour and a half and try to get us done by 9ine but I'm just saying 10:30 in case we still need to because we do need to get some actions done tonight and I don't want to get to nine and have be rushed and we didn't get it done so that's just that's why I want to say 10:30 but let but with the agreement that we all are keeping each other accountable to trying to um expedite that and get done a little more quickly so that's why 10:30 president ahead on if I can make a suggestion and just a comment to throw out there you can reject it or you you guys can say no or yes but perhaps as we're are discussing and going along and um if Dr Bower doesn't mind to try to put something like she said very concise and condensed instead of like something that's very wordy while we keep the discussion going and then she can SHINee in and say so far this is what we've got and then if we all say wow that sounds perfect let's just stop right here or we can just continue going and then working I mean that's I'm just throwing that out so that we can get something done and not go through till 10:30 or 11 okay tro I agree um I think that Dr Bower can take the global perspective here because if we take if we notice um the things that all of us have been providing are I feel this and my experience has been that and that's very important because uh we all should be putting we we should all be incorporating the experiences as residents F but uh I think that Dr bar can grab every all the input that we' she's been hearing give us a kind of a global type of a picture and then have us consider that tweak it uh it would probably be lead us to to have more progress in so when you're say when you're saying a global picture I'm not are you are let me try to clarify are you're saying that as we're discussing Dr bow is crafting it into an actual statement that we can then take action on basically giving us a draft and I think that given the fact that she's getting inputs from her communication with City lead leaders uh people at the County uh the residents the the various committees I think that she would be able to incorporate all of that experience to give us a draft uh and then we could incorporate the things that uh uh have been put forth right here and what we what we have in front of us but that uh she would go ahead and present us with a draft of some sort but with the knowledge that we need to take action on that finalized statement tonight correct yeah and I'm assuming in preparation she probably came over with a couple of notes already so I'm hoping that you'd be able to start uh polishing that up and then eventually showing that to us Dr B draft one Dr B okay well I was drafting something for you I don't I didn't my notes were the samples but uh if you want to consider this right now and Mar if you want to type it so that they can think about it and I've been putting together kind of some of the thoughts um we believe that all alumrock students can be ready for the future comma oh on second a a diverse and competitive World very rough draft I just try to put together into a sentence the stuff that you've been talking about I I like that we should just stop right here I like it too one more time can you repeat I'm GNA repeat it for so she can type it guys okay okay we believe that all alumrock students marel yes we believe that oh that all all alumrock students can be ready for the future can we go a little bit Bolder and say we'll be ready for the future sure I mean that that's why this is a draft right well but hold on because you're you're still W weren't done with it right Dr bar there was a little no it wasn't so after future is a comma a diverse and competitive World in a divers I'm sorry I can't hear you in a diverse and competitive world is that what you said yes we're missing in a diverse um right after the comma in a thank you and I think that we'll be ready for the future will be very a lot stronger yeah I the part that I was gonna along those same lines as trusty Chavez um I I was gonna say because a en vision statement I think is is like what you are going to do so I I would I'm comfortable with saying like all alen rock students will be ready for the future in a diverse like at the end of the day what are we trying to work towards all Alam Rock students will be ready for the future in a diverse and competitive world can we not it's not just that we believe it like trusty Chavez said it's to me the strong um audacious future oriented statement is that we they will be ready for the future that's the vision trusty Chavez but um in what you just said I mean also to the students saying we believe in you so if we word Smith it around you know tweaking it back and forth can we make it say that yeah because the way we have it now the the believe because I know we talked about that word believe and the way we have it in this particular iteration it's more about our belief um so what I heard before was that we wanted students to feel um to feel belief in themselves if I'm not mistaken because there's this is that we believe this what about what we put we believe in the students of alen rock cuz that's we believe in them then they're gonna we're GNA get them ready we believe in these kids I like that all alrock just daating it I do too all Alam Rock students will be ready I like the way that Dr Bower already had it down because it was talking about um Everybody in the district you know the all the students in the district and it was precise and it was um it's easy to people to remember okay so I I'll go with that what she Dr B go ahead so what I um how I see this and and maybe this is getting a little technical but I think it's maybe captures what trusta saying too is that if we leave it as it is which is I think it's a good um it's good but to me that say that our what our vision is according to this statement the vision is our belief like what we're envisioning is that we will believe that students can be successful so I think hold on for me what I want the vision to be is that the students will be successful not that in the in five years from now I don't want I don't want it to be that I believe they can be successful five years from now I want it to be that they will be successful so it's a it's a kind of a maybe a granular distinction but but I think for me it's significant and and before we go there trusty Chavez um I just want to with respect to trusty kto because he had requested about sharing his screen and he had something to share a while back from New Jersey do you still want to put that up trusty K or you want to go no because that uh if we're still working on the mission that's actually uh if we're working on Vision um their statement was a a mi is a mission statement so okay um it's it wouldn't apply directly okay I just wanted to make sure that we didn't you know leave you hanging there chusty Chavez so I I think earlier I said that wouldn't it be better if we edited can to Will and that's actually saying exactly what you just said but I had said earlier will be ready so that's like we believe in these kids so will be ready yeah I mean again I just I my thought is that we would take out we believe that and I just like all alamro students will so maybe can we refer back to maybe like the long be oh the Long Beach one is there right every student I don't know if that's a typo every student is a responsible productive student so it's kind of like it's not saying we believe every student is responsible it's saying every student is a responsible productive studen I mean student in but it doesn't say productive student it says a productive citizen yeah but my point being telling us that when the child Leaves Long Beach this is what they will be they believe that they will be reproductive and in a diverse and competitive world but to me that statement is not saying that they believe that that's going to happen that statement is saying it is going to happen yeah student will yeah wheel should be put instead of can yeah I agree with that part but my the part that I'm saying is that the we believe part I think is unnecessary because I did I don't think it's necessary similar to The Long Beach one that trusty Marquez brought up it's very clear statement all alumrock students will be ready for the future in a diverse and competitive word and the Long Beach one is very simple every student you're cutting out oh sorry um can you hear me now Yeah so basically I I think this the simplified version still captures you know what you're saying trusty Chavez the sentiment that trusty Marquez had in the Simplicity of the Long Beach statement um some of the words that we use diverse competitive so I think taking out the we believe that and just starting with all Alam Rock students okay it makes a it makes a stronger statement to me I see a thumbs up from trusty loera okay another thumbs up a thumb up but it has to say will then I'll agree I agree 100% all right I don't think we man looks sounds like we might have at least four um Joy kto do you have any thoughts and maybe we can put this one right now on for a motion so let's let's see can you type it up again yeah take out um we believe that and capitalize all just the a and then replace the word can with will yeah there you go there you go ready all alumrock students will be ready for the future in a diverse and competitive World nice I like that a lot I like it I have a motion I motion I have a thumbs up can I motion I want to make the motion that we put we get this going second okay uh we have a iot in a second on the floor to adopt the vision statement for the district as um written on the screen and as just recently read um is there any discussion any further discussion or questions by the board I just I was curious I know kto was gonna put out the Union City um New Jersey and we never saw it I was just curious but I like this one so I'll go back and read it or well we're we going to move into mission statement next so maybe that will be the appropriate time um so we do have to take public comments so avar or um uh Mr Sanchez is there any public comment on this item uh looks like we have a a hand raise not a digital hand and actual hand raise um do we have the clock ready I see your hand um joclyn so I'll give you give me a second um might do we have the clock ready or can we get the clock ready I can't hear you um okay so we'll have two minutes for public comment um I anyone if you're seeing this on the YouTube stream please as soon as possible um notify us we will be moving forward soon um I didn't see I really don't need a clock okay it's going to be very brief I'm just wondering if you need the comma in there um you might want to but otherwise awesome job guys after are you talking about after the word diverse after the word future there is a I know I don't I'm not sure it's necessary oh but that's just when it gets written in stone otherwise great job yeah I think um I would agree I know we're not supposed to respond to public comment so um I think that I think that taking out the comma in that section or that part is is the right way to do it all is Mark students will be ready for the future in a diverse yeah I think we don't need any punctuation under other than the period any other comments from the board on that grammatical I appreciate our our public comment on that um I think that's a a good point and it is important even though it is a living document it's important to get it as close as we can to what you know what we're going to put out there publicly um okay so uh trusty I mean Mr Gil do we have a comment no there isn't any on EMA or any other perfect so we will go ahead and call for the vote I'll call each one individually um oh trust I mean Mr Ruiz is there a are we missing something I just want to make it clear for the record that this is uh relating to item 3.02 on the agenda thank you thank you for the clarification yes so um I will call for the vote on this as I see you on my screen truste Chavez yay trusty erera trusty Quintero hi trusty Marquez hi and yes for myself motion passes unanimously we have a vision statement um good work team I think with that momentum if if everyone is agreeable to this we can and thank you might belel for for that I think we're going to probably use something similar in The Next Step here so I don't know if there's a way either do a screen capture or something to just I mean I guess we're recording this so it's kind of not necessarily but just to make sure you have that and then yes trusty Marquez president yes president can you read the final of what we um voted on can you read it one last time yes all alumrock students will be ready for the future in a diverse and competitive world thank you okay okay so um it's 7:30 as a quick time check let's um let's move forward to what item is it the mission statement I have to find my agenda three 3.0 three um and so just for the purposes of time do we want to set because we have this and then we have the governance handbook that we need to approve both of those things so do we want to be very clear about the time that we set for ourselves for the these two items just to you know keep us on track more like an hour for one or or whatever anyone throws out there if not we'll just go with it any suggestions or recommendations or even Dr B go ahead trusty let just get started yeah let's just get started and see because uh I know this one's going to be more lengthy a little bit more wordy um so I I'm hoping that um Dr B will be listening and we'll be able to put it together in in in a way that when she reads it back to us we'll either be happy with it or we're going to still work with it or somebody's so passionate like I really want it what I said somehow fit in there and we'll look we'll search for a word that or two that will fix that okay okay so um since it worked well in the last process um first marel can you because the mission statement is going to be now a little bit more specific of how we get to that Vision so might Bell as a start at the top of the page there can you put the um the vision statement that we just voted on all I don't have a memory mized yet all Alam Rock students yes that one so this is going to be what we're our mission statement should all kind of point to this Vision everything that we put in the vision in the mission should Point towards this Vision so we can once you have that up there marel um can you put the current Dr bow do you have the current do we have a current mission that we've been working off of actually we don't have that right okay so then we're going to be starting we're going to be starting fresh on this one which kind of appropriate because what we develop will need to speak to this Vision specifically um so as a start just to throw something out there and just to get something on there I I had for my for mine that I put up before I had also a mission statement that I can put up just so we can pick it apart take it away whatever um just to start with so mighty Bell if you I'll read it out and you can type it through committed staff and dedicated Partners I guess comma dedicated partners and stakeholders no I'm sorry I'm sorry through committed staff and dedicated partners and stakeholders olders this was a rush draft forgive my English comma we will maintain an environment that develops well-rounded students missing the end that's all right we just keep going for now environment that develops well rounded students well-rounded students after develops who are able to focus on their academic emotional and physical well-being so the spelling stuff we can clean up after that's fine but I know sometimes I I can be a little wordy but that's as I mentioned just as a starting point we can completely scrap it we can take words from it we can use it to inspire some other statement that that points to the mission that we've already the vision that we've already developed truste kto I shot over some language to uh marel um the mission statement from Union City is massive it's not necessarily Mission it's like a mishmash of vision and Mission uh but I thought there was a part there that kind of encapsulates and it sort of goes along with what you said but I just was hoping that we could check it out and see if there's anything that we see as being something that we want to include in ours um you know have Mar Bell type up this part you're gonna read it to us right now that important no I emailed it to her so if you can just uh like copy and paste that I don't think she can copy and paste on this um I'll look at it or you can share your screen and show it to us or I don't know okay any while while that's happening any other thought or words or anything you know what here let me just read it then if you can't copy and paste it then okay go ahead and at least for now just read the part that you think is oh you can share it yeah hold on a second let me just and I saw your hand trust each other as we'll we'll get to you in a in a minute thank you uhuh can you see it all right so can you all see it yes language is there I guess I'll read it for those who For Those whom the language the the the writing might be really small but one of the things that I found uh useful from them is a the district seeks to makes our school Dynamic Democratic learning environments from which our students emerg as fully fluent users of new emergy technologies embedded in our approach to education is the concept of children families Teachers Community working together to facilitate and maximize the Union City Schools uh District commitment to Excellence so obviously it's very tailored to them uh and they're going into the weeds with new emerging Technologies although I don't blame them something that's essential uh but the children families teachers um concept is something that I felt was really important that's why I wanted to share that yeah I like that part um anything further on that k for now no that's uh what I wanted to share and see if there was interest in grabbing any part of it or incorporating a piece was that the part that that you that you particularly gravitated towards the concept of children families teachers and Community working together um yeah give me a let me go back to I'm looking at it from another screen because that text is actually very small at least on my screen um so are you on your cell phone no no um the District seeks to make our schools Dynamic Democratic learning environments from which our students emerge and so that was something that called to me and then uh the children families teachers and Community working together facilitate and maximize so showing showing that we are uh that that it's not just the district that it's everybody working together uh and that it's all our responsibility to and that's how we wind up moving forward okay so in terms of just getting some some words up there again like we did on the last one brainstorming are you okay with putting up that part of the phrase um is the concept of children families teachers and Community working together is is that yeah embeding our approach to education is a concept of families uh children families teachers and Community working together to facilitate them um so how about it for now if we Mighty Bell can you type in as we continue to talk on our end over here type in from embedded the beginning of that sentence all the way to the word together and then just kind of dot dot dot after that okay and put it up on that other board thank you uh trusty Chavez I so I guess can I um you know like Dolores said earlier that if I should maybe just put what I said earlier in this one so um mine was Finding solutions by coming together with parents teachers administrators and lawmakers for the good and benefit of all students okay um I think I texted it to Mar also I don't know if she has it if that'll make it easier yeah I have it um okay when you have a chance Mighty B if you can get us on the back on that whiteboard screen perfect um so you'll be typing in there Trin thto suggestion and then on once you're done with that we can do trusty Chavez's um so so far just I mean just with those three what trusty Chavez had said before with what trusty kto read from New Jersey and from the one that I um threw out there a theme that I think I see is is kind of the work of of of staff and partners and stakeholders that that concept of working together um of of the different segments of our community working together for Student Success um that seems to be pretty prominently um you know across the three that I've seen or heard so far can I read mine now oh you have one too yes trusty Marquez okay hold on um marel are you I'm texting trusty Chavez to text it to me okay and then I'll so um let's see so right now we we need a couple of minute a minute or two here for might belel to catch up on the things we're asking her to type up ah so we'll we'll get those up there and then trusty MZ will get yours as well um okay TR Dr Bower and I see your hand do I mean Dr era I see your hand but um Dr Bower in this particular part do you have any thoughts or even Mr Ruiz any thoughts about our Direction in terms of making sure that this ties to strategic plan or um any other language and the other areas that we have to consider is there any thoughts you have or should we just kind of similar to the last process free will this and then make sure it aligns after we do it to the other areas we need to align with Dr Bower's contract or other things that need to match up Dr bow I saw your hand just wanted to remind the board that the mission the mission will have to answer answer the question how are we going to make sure will be ready for the future right so as you think in terms of the concepts that you want to mission statement that they need to be the how I get ready for the future yes um um Mr Ruiz did you have a comment yeah just just real quick that um that what drives the Strategic plan is the the district's mission and vision so I think you're you're doing it in the right order okay so nothing specific in the mission has to kind of look at what the Strategic plan is doing and and speak to that we we can we're safe to just move forward in this process yes yes okay um so it looks like we have trusty kinos up there um are you are you working on trusty Chavez's next might she's texting it me right now okay while she does that can you type up trusty marquez's as she as she reads it out her suggestion are you ready trusty Marquez yes I am okay so go ahead and read a little bit slowly um so that uh marel can get yours up there the elmrock school district will provide all students with the skills to become a successful lifelong Learners in the 21st century we provide all students with so what we have so far is the Alam Rock School District will provide all students with the skills to become successful lifelong learners for the 21st century okay want me to repeat that yes okay school hold on trusty marz marel take out the word and and put life there oh life yeah lifelong learners for the 21st century I think we might have it trusty Mar like yeah okay so students with the skills to become successful lifelong learners for the 21st century yeah we have it I kind of wish we would have had that before for the vision statement I like some of that for the for the vision um uh let's see was was there thank you for that um are you working on trusty Chavez's now yes like okay trusty era did you have your hand up or no sorry the only thing I was gonna say is uh maybe once we get these if maybe Bower can do this and I think you already said it but just to make sure that we heard the same that she can work on something from this while we work on the governance book and then come back to this at the end of our meeting finalize our Miss and I think just thought I mean I I i' certainly trust Dr bow to do that work she was able to do in the last one but I I actually would like to have a little conversation just about as a board the themes that because you know this is our our thing that we need to do so um I agree sorry for misunderstanding kind of like what we did the last time where we were pulling in words from what we had written yeah so same kind of similar process yeah we'll have a little discussion about themes or thoughts and then from that she can okay perfect I agree with trusty Beano I agree with you that we should do it thank you okay I mean it's be know but who's who's paying attention okay Mr Ernie good A lot of people know me that too so okay I know your theas calls you that so um that's a so I think we're on track here um good job Mighty bet thank you that we have them all up so thank you um Tristy era can you do me a favor while I get a drink of water and read off the the I guess the you know what we have there the vision first and then the the four different mission statements and then we'll have a little discussion is that okay can we do can we do a little minute break um I don't know that we uh five minutes I need to get to the L's bathroom um do we have any problem with that Tristy I mean Mr Ruiz are we able to uh call a quick break here or do we need to do yeah oh yeah you can call a break not a problem but in terms of the technology of this how I'm trying to think um it's it's only going so everybody should just be advised and be aware that this recording will continue running okay so um and we need a motion or motion we don't but oh we don't need a motion so we don't need one I appreciate the looks like we don't need one so it's 7:48 we are very conscious of the time here but um let's say at 7 7:55 we'll return so we'll take a brief break this will continue to record and at 7:55 with or without you as long as we have a quorum we will continue so go ahead and take a a break and we'll be back at 7:55 thank you for B e h was the 1.3 for [Music] e for you for [Music] e we have at least two of us back um I'm gonna assume trusty marz are you here okay will'll assume she'll announce her presence when she gets back uh and hopefully we'll see trusty era or trusty Kino when they are back everything going okay marel with this process she's on mute oh I wonder if she can hear me no she's on mute can un yeah just know you shouldn't have said that it was gonna go bad remember what's that remember you said it's so far so good but it [Music] might that the night is young president Bano yes call from H Dr Bower yes so I I I told her that I've had um similar things where I've had things at a specific time on zoom and gone past that time and hav't hasn't been an is issue but we will be um um wary of that and if we get to that time we'll kind of check in and see see where we go with that okay maybe in the meanwhile if if you're if you're bored and have nothing to do if you maybe you could do a quick search on um does Zoom kick you out past the time or whatever something like that and see if there's any quick answers we can find on it depends on what you it dep sorry it depends on what you signed up for because each one of them has a different time do you know do you have the contract in front you know if you have a pro account it just lets you keep on going yeah that's J until you finish is that what we have on for the district I believe so yes yeah it is the pro account so what uh what after's um referring to is is just a quick something to to be mindful of is that this and think this might have been where I got my 9:30 from because this meeting on Zoom is scheduled until 9:30 um so so the question was at at 9:30 if it would just automatically end myself and I think trusty Kinto don't think that will be the case but before 9:30 we'll kind of check in if we get there and make sure that we you know we'll check in at that time but hopefully we won't get there we might but um we'll see how that goes down so it looks like we have one two three there's four of it trusty Marquez are you back yet yes sir oh perfect I was listening I was listening to your guys's conversation are you the one with the birds in the background someone has words and it's that's me no I like that that's a good back yeah I mean they're not mine they just always think that this is their home no it's it's it's a calming little presence for us so well let's just hope the the hawkk doesn't show up it doesn't sound so calming when they're all screeching all right on that note let's Screech our way back into into this work here um so again thank our we're coming back to order I don't I don't need to call it back to order I don't think but we are coming getting back to work so mighty bet thank you for getting this all set up and and learning this technology as we go here um so I think where we left off actually um trusty Loa if you want to read you can I think I'm okay to read it now but I could always take a break from blabbing so um if you want to read off maybe the the vision that we came up with that top one and then the four uh you know suggested or or proposed phrases and then um we'll have a little discussion similar to last time look for some them or some important thoughts that we want captured and Dr Bower will attempt to craft something that we can then finalize okay sure go ahead thank you all right so all alrock students will be ready for the future and diverse and compe world now vision statements through committed STA and dedicated partners and stakeholders we will maintain an environment that develops well-rounded students who are able to focus on on their academic emotional and physical well-being next embedded in our approach to education is a concept of children families teachers and maximize School District's commitment to Excellence I'm sorry um she's like sounds like she's drowning in I can't hear it all maybe she was under she was underwater for me too yeah just due to that due to the challeng technological challenges maybe I'll I'll go ahead and take it back for now but thank you for that nice little break so I'll re read that one that I think maybe has a little type bow there but I'll read it as it's written for now embedded in our approach to education is the concept of children families teachers and maximize the alumrock school district commitment to Excellence so that's how it's written I think there's something a little off there one is alen Rock School District will provide all students with the skills to become successful lifelong Learners in the 21st century and the final one is implementing solutions by coming together with parents teachers administrators and lawmakers for the for the good and benefit of all students and I don't think that's supposed to be a period there before four but that's so trusty Marquez were you able to hear those all yes I did thank you okay so um as I mentioned I think a little while ago one thing that I see as a fairly common theme um is the concept of working together stakeholders parents Community like that idea of of everyone working together to me comes across pretty strongly in pretty much all the statements um any disagreement or thoughts on that by my colleagues so I I agree with what you just said implementing Solutions is what I would add to because not because it's mine but because be because it it makes it look like um we're going to get to it as far as you know the word soluions goes try Marquez were you talking yeah yeah I was going to say that listening to that and putting myself um in front of this mission statement and and going this is where I'm going to start my children in this District um that doesn't tell me how you're going to get there just that you're going to do it and and inquisitive parent like me I always gonna say well how are they gonna do it you know so maybe yeah that that definitely needs to be part of it too the um I think the the part the theme that I see common with parents children I mean parents family stakeholders I think that's the who that will help us get to that Vision it doesn't quite capture the how yet that's just kind of a theme that I see about the who so what about sorry I thought you stopped no go ahead what about implementing Solutions um and then focused on academic on academic academic or academics so okay so focused on student academics marel is there a way to shrink the letter I don't know if it gives you the option to decrease the font size on those just so we can have room for you to type um the some of the ideas as we're discussing here yeah can you shrink it down so I heard um implementing Solutions is once we get it to a point where you can type stuff or even just put everything real close together just to give us a little space where you can type yeah you could do that squeeze it all the way to the left squeeze all of them like maybe halfway across and see what happens happens you can go go more we don't we really don't need to see those too much that's fine and then the ones on top too so then you can use the right side of that screen to type in so just do the same thing you did to those other top ones through committed staff and all Al Rock uh okay well maybe you could just use whatever open space you have to to type so one of the things um that we have as just again just ideas Concepts words for now not that it has to be perfect is implementing Solutions that's what you said do um trust those are the words that you focused on academics or student academic or student academics okay uh um I'm trying to I have so just she's uh go ahead trusty marz okay so she's doing that um you remember earlier that I had stat to um trusty Chavez you know um what we what what have we learned from the covid-19 you know what have we done since the covid-19 well we did the hotpots we got you know technology in every child's hand um and so we should be able to say something in their statement that will reflect saying that we're ready not only to prepare them like the vision the vision statement you know um uh we have to tie it into you know that all all Ro students will be ready well they're going to be ready because we have you know over the course of this last two and a half months month you know we have been able to do all these success you know uh what do you call that learning learning the teach the the teachers are teaching distant learning yes and we have done all of that and somehow we need to tie it in so that they can the vision will be able to picture the parents what it can possibly look like for their child you know going to Alum Rock we can't we can't we can't the traditional the traditional you know teaching like we used to but we have something in place you know I like that thought trusty Marquez tell me if this captures in some way um what you're saying because even if not I might add it after but something along the lines of um we will take or taking a proactive approach like we're we're doing things we're kind of looking forward and we're and we're not just waiting and doing you know things as they come up we're being proactive you need to tie that you need to tie that proactive you know with um with with the teachers and the parents and the staff that we're all going to be working together because we've done it already can can I say something you just change just I want to make sure that I have trusty marquez's thing so so is your focus more on the action or on the parents students just because we don't have anything captured up here for what you're saying right now um you're saying more the action so that it would lead us to the how um proactively engaging parents and stakeholders can I good okay can we put that up there for now proactively engaging parents and stakeholders just to get something up there truste Chavez as she's typing that what were you gonna add so if you were to put instead of implementing put proactively imple proactive implemented Solutions implemented change the ing to Ed and so you're not using so many words yeah capitalize a p yeah okay so remember that in the mission statement and we can certainly discuss this but the mission statement is kind of what we're setting out to do so to use the word implemented to me kind of signifies that it it has been done already proactive Implement I like your first version of it okay switch the two words around implementing proactive Solutions okay I like that okay so so somewhere in there again this is not final we're just no no it's not somewhere in there but like so somewhere in there you need um you need to connect it to well I I would like it to be connected to somehow saying that you know our students will become successful life lifel learners for the 21st century yeah I I do like that lifelong Learners phrase so you wanna just add add that Mighty and not necessarily I'm not trying to get the perfect phrase right now might so just put in the word lifelong learners for now just to capture that because my um trusty MZ and myself sounds like at least both like that TR uh trusty Loa do you have a comment and then Chavez after that I'm in agreement with all this but I'm still thinking about the how right so like the mission statement is like the how um and so I'm thinking somewhere in there maybe adding um Quality education uh our our students our children's um by providing quality education you know like including more the how are we going to do um right right yeah stud to be ready for competitive World uhuh yeah I like what you're do with that I I like how uh trusty Marquez mentioned you know about how we're you know connecting with the times right our distance learning and all that um so like thinking of what would capture that um yeah and remembering that you know although we do want to go specific on Mission we don't want to get in the weeds as truste kto kind of alluded to earlier so some of those could then be put into the goals and other places so but I like where you're going with focusing a little bit more on the how where we get there trusty Chavez or were you done trusty ala for now okay I can't see is there any way you can move it over cuz the little squares over here um with everybody's pictures thank you proactively engaging life do Dr Bower did you get a chance to put anything together you have a working draft yet and let's hear what you have so far I do yay go I think there I think with the knowledge like it but here would go well with the knowledge that I think there's still a few other Concepts that we might want to include but what you have for now we'd like to hear so I've been listening to your thoughts and this is my very very rough draft our mission is to provide all alumrock students with safe and high quality learning environments by coming together with all stakeholders for the benefit of our community I think it's pretty close I like it thoughts anyone else um maybe the ending maybe the last um the last few words can be changed so that we can modify it to add everything that all of us were saying the how you know the you know where we're taking them you know um and you know adding the yeah I think things incorporating other things that we have said I think it is a pretty good pretty close stab at it but we I think maybe we'll have we want to have a little more discussion on refining it so marel you're do you have it to put up there or do you need Dr Bower to re read that I'm GNA read it again for everybody's benefit okay our mission is to provide all alumrock students with safe and high quality learning environments by coming together with all stakeholders for the benefit of our community I I think that we should stick to the students and we're addressing the the students and the vision and maybe ended with the students for this you know for the benefit of our students of all of our students yeah I think and I think um might need to read it again just for M to catch up all so so far what we have our mission is to provide safe yeah I think we're gonna need Dr bar you can read it but um a little bit more slowly so that might better can capture it and we can work from it our mission is to provide all alumrock students with and high quality learning environment by coming together with all hold hold on hold on hold on with safe high quality learning environments you said yes okay get that Mighty B or may may maybe we can change that to um 21st Century Learning environment or maybe we can say um let's get let's get what she has so far and then we'll tweak it I like that too okay so okay our mission is to provide all alen rock students with safe High qual safe and high quality okay hold on and high quality learning environments by coming together by coming together okay with all stakeholders for the benefit of our students yes yeah I think you could take out the word all there mighty be by yeah yeah yeah because it's already at the top so let me reread it again make sure this is what we have and so trusty mids can hear it again our mission is to provide all alrock students with safe and highquality learning environments by coming together with all stakeholders for the benefit of our students okay so that's what we have um we could we could maybe put in their um top technology um classrooms or we are in the Silicon Valley can can we so uh let me see I I kind of don't think that we need our mission is to I think we can just put like we provide all or we will provide yeah I agree with that any other thoughts on that trusty Chavez I see your hand up that's what we I I think that what you said and also omit safe and and just put provide high quality in so you know provide alamro you know all alrock concise it down more is what I'm saying remember the language from Union City the the reason I didn't want to go into the weeds but if that's the case then uh it's uh uh our students emerge as fully fluent users of new and emerging Technologies I like that wait can you repeat that again you're so you're saying yeah I was hesitant because I was concerned about going to the weeds but if there's a desire to to talk about technology since we're in Silicon Valley the language is our students emerge as fully fluent users of new and emerging Technologies would you because I think um trusty Marquez said something that's similar that I think is more concise would you say that what you just read is captured by saying something something along the lines of um 21st century education or or something along those lines or do you feel the need to have the wording as you kind of spelled it out um I don't know trusty marus said she liked the language so I'm not sure no I I I like I like both languages I really do but the con yeah I I like the concept and and how it you worded that because yes I think that someone moving into you know into the Silicon Valley I think would look for schools that say Hey you know who's pushing the technology over here what districts are really implementing or what districts have you know compacts or they have us with you know with the with all of the high technology people that are here the the businesses you know like yeah and I think that it's important it's important because the mission State or the vision statement says we'll be ready for the future so we do need to I think have something specifically in the mission that speaks to how we get them ready for that future and that might be the this statement something along the lines of what um trusty kto said or 21st Century Learning or something something that speaks to the future of learning um and you know and and the wording the 21st century um you know um it it um it comes up a lot when people are writing grants that's a good point and know you know when we uh you know if we put in for Grants or people you know teachers principal whoever wants to write a grant you know they can look at that mission and might use that mission statement and in the process of doing a grant or something so I think Dr Bower I see her working I think she's capturing some of these thoughts so something along the line of 21st century or the words that trinto said we kind of want weaved in there to address that statement in the vision that talks about being ready for the future so also in the vision if we if we track along the same line of thinking in the vision statement it says they'll be ready for a diverse and competitive world so similarly to how we're saying 21st century to address the future is there anything that we could incor operate in this mission statement that kind of speaks to how we will get them ready for a diverse and competitive world so can I have a qu I have a question so I thought we were going to take out our mission and then we were just going to put to provide is that still on on there because what I'm seeing here on my screen I took it off I took it off what I'm seeing onen can you take off um our mission is is there any way possible to move things over because the pictures are coming up and I can't see the end it still needs to be moved over a little bit trusty Chavez if you take your mouse and hover it above the kind of in between the pictures and the Whiteboard you'll see like a little arrow pop up do you see that I thought I heard you say if you take your mouth instead of your mouth mouth do you see that trusty Chavin yeah but it's not happening right now if you press and hold and pull it to the right does that make it bigger for you it looks I don't how to drag it but it's not working in my case oh I know how to drag but it's it's just not working um so what are you unable to see uh Well everybody's faces and you know get is it's onto the right side isn't that what you said yeah so it's blocking half of my screen and I'm using the mouse to drag the mouse and it's not working so for me right now so is there any other way you can whatever we're not using to kind of shove it to the top or to the bottom or can we move the alar students the first one lines we have over to the right and that way it'll free up some space is that possible so we could see it better because I'm I'm getting people from the community saying they can't see it either did you maximize it yeah your screen so might B can you maximize all those draft those draft um mission statements on the left can you squeeze them even more to the left even if they go off the screen yeah smaller font or something yeah the one like the ones that say through committed staff and dedicated partners and the ones that say embedded in our approach Alam Rock School like all those ones on the left side of the um and you're on mute Mighty Bell in case you're trying to say something but the ones on the left side of the Whiteboard you use a smaller font I think it'll work I don't know if she has the ability to change the font I can't um move it any further um I can't so if you can you select those the ones on the left like committ that's better thank you oh perfect that's good that's good thank you okay thank you marel um good job so so back to that question of addressing addressing the um diverse and competitive World part of our vision is there anything that we can drop into the mission statement draft that addresses the diverse and comp competitive World part of the vision and Dr bow oh I see your hand up I was about to ask you but I look over and your hand is up so please let us know what you're working with so here's here's another rough draft let's see if I capture what your thoughts were and before you go is this is it kind of building off what you already have or should marel type a new thing probably a new because I added some of the newest Concepts that you really wanted to add okay just to have aan wonder if marel can delete all the old stuff well let's leave might can you leave it there for now just so we can refer to it if we need to but just create just start fresh with this new one I guess I was talking about the the samples I don't know but I think maybe if you just if you read what you have for now and then we can um okay here we go okay hold on hold on I'm sorry hold on Mighty Bella is preparing the little text box to give her room to type so are you ready Mighty Bella or let us know when you're ready she's ready okay all systems go to provide all alumrock students with high quality TW 21st Century Learning environment where they can where they can emerge hold on Dr bar um so might can you move the other things up higher implementing proactive Solutions and our mission is to provide can you move those two uh yeah those the two sections above what what you're typing right now are you able to select them and move them up hold on Dr B oh you can see it too right Dr B yeah yeah I'm see I'll wait okay because she's running out of typing room there there you go there you go now you cooking with Chrisco with Chrisco I don't know I heard someone say that before [Laughter] [Music] Mon and now I think and then if you could BR widen that box out oh I don't know what that was the other one Mighty Bell if you grab the part that says provide all Alam Rock I think we're fine with that stuff over there pull that up no no pull it up or I guess that's fine too and then widen it out there you go perfect okay with high quality First Century Learning environment where they can what hold on she's not ready yet that's fine might now you can start get back to typing Dr Bower stuff okay almost after can you keep typing on the same uh let's just go with this for now let's so they can emerge it was me helping marel there I was the one who was dragging okay thank you AAR as fluent users what users and creators of new and emerging Technologies marel I there you go by working together with all [Music] stakeholders for the benefit of all our students so for your trusty marz I'll read off this draft this working draft here provide all alamro students with high quality 21st Century Learning environment where they can emerge as fluent users and creators of new and emerging Technologies by working together with all stakeholders for the benefit of all our students I think we need to chop it down a little yeah that's exactly what I was gonna say that seems too wordy um let's see I like providing I like that first part provide all Alam Rock students with high quality 21st Century Learning with a highquality 21st Century Learning environment so I like it up to there for sure that addresses the vision that they'll be ready for the future um could we just put together with all stakeholders benefiting all students to chop it down more so let's see h new and emerging Technologies by working together with all stakeholders for the benefit of our C so if we're gonna two things I would say number one the second part of that that went into that new box about specifically the part about working together with all stakeholders um I think would that would go in the beginning so something like by working together with all stakeholders I would take out for the benefit of all our students because that's in the other part all alen rock students so sobody b um I don't know what's the best way to do this can you just don't erase anything yet just in front of provide at the at that top box provide all Alam Rock students like before the word provide no no no down where you were yeah there before the word provide can you put by working together with all stakeholders or you know I would take take out the word is that still too wordy Hold On by working together take out the word all by working together with stakeholders we will provide and then we will provide all alamro students with high quality 21st Century Learning um let me see so let me ask this does is there any objection to moving that part to the front so instead of talking about the stakeholders at the end starting by saying by working together with stakeholders we will provide alen Rock students with high does is that sound okay with everybody I think I liked it before the way it was what did you say trusty Marquez no I think that I mean I was reading some of the other ones that have come you know from the the samples we got and some of them start in that manner okay trusty I like it I actually think um we're getting toward you know I'm kind of going back to the one we had um initially um because this one feels like we're like uh like bringing all this stuff into them versus the other one you know still kind of bringing the best out of them um I don't know I that part of like uh fluent users and and I think it's a great thing know it's kind of like not you're breaking up but I think I agree with what I think you're saying that the section about emerge as fluent users and creators of new and emerging Technologies like that part you're saying is maybe we've already kind of stated it in by saying 21st century or something like that and and those that particular phrase is kind of duplicative or just too much is that what you were trying to say yeah and I'm gonna call in if Avatar can open me up I'm gonna call in within the next two minutes um I I everybody got off the internet so I figured that would work but it's not so I'm gonna call in right now and if he can take me off okay trusty Chavez it's still too wordy to me uh it sounds repetitious so if we could chop it up but give the same impact but with less words yeah so um why don't we follow the rule of good writing and do the who what where and how and and and then maybe we can structure it then and um and eliminate some some wording and be able to even put in other things that will open it up to what comments were made earlier from everyone okay um you you you could probably put all stakeholders providing Alam students you already eliminated a lot of words on the top and then doing the same in the next couple lines would anybody disagree or have a big problem if we took out emerge as fluent users and creators of new and emerging Technologies is anybody to that yeah take it out okay let's let's take that out for now because and the reason why is because I think we spoke to it by saying um 21st Century Learning yes and because we're trying toir it Cho up I can't hear you okay oh it wasn't important it wasn't important you didn't miss anything I you're chopping up I can't hear anything you say uh okay call in call in can it can anyone hear me at this point or I can hear you now but hear okay let me just let me try to keep going um okay so by working together with stakeholders we will provide all alamro students with high quality 21st Century Learning take out the word environment where they can and then take out and creators of new and emerging Technologies actually take out that whole bottom part because now we have the stakeholders at the top so take that all out yep okay so this is what we have so far and I Like It by working together with stakeholders we will provide all alumrock students with highquality 21st Century Learning where they can and I think here is where we would put in something a little bit more specific about how they will um be successful in a diverse and competitive World well they can become lifelong Learners in a successful diverse um so what do we do that prepares them for the diversity of the world and the competitiveness of the world what is well the competitive we're already addressed it by saying it's going to be the 21st century environment and skills are going to come out with okay that's valid what about the um the diversity do we need to put diversity do we need to put diversity no we don't need we don't need to put the word diversity but the mission should kind of point to the vision so I'm just suggesting that since the vision speaks to a diverse and competitive world that maybe something in the mission should also speak to how we are preparing them for a diverse and competitive world but you're you're if you add more words you're making it more wordy I mean sometimes sometimes just short concise message boom I agree but I think that I don't I don't think we need to add a whole bunch of words but I think there might be opportunity to let me think real quick and also um other trustees if you have something please feel free by working together with st we will provide all alamro students with high quality 21st Century Learning can you just put all stakeholders working to provide and that's like less [Music] worthy um how about but then that doesn't include Let's see we um we will work together with all stakeholders to provide it's kind of the same length with high qual so I don't want to focus too much on length right now we can cut down but I want to make sure content is good but to stay away from the we and just you like put your head first by working with all stakeholders okay so let's go with that for now I sear were they so I would say something like this that and it would speak to the divver because really our I think our mission should be you know our our district is very diverse that's one of the strengths I think of our district the diversity that we have with different Latino cultures Asian African all the different cultures that make up our district it's kind of unique amongst maybe some other areas even though we are a diverse area in general enal but I think we if we said by working together with stakeholders we will provide all alamro students with high quality 21st Century Learning that builds Upon Our diverse our diverse see population or even our Multicultural population something like that you that or maybe you can use the fabric you know the fabric comment you know how everybody uses the Fab the uh what do you call it oh god build let me see by working together with stakeholders we will provide all alamro students with high quality 21st Century Learning that builds upon cultural um or diverse or diverse cultural um what I'm looking for Upon Our diverse cultural population community community are culturally are that that builds Upon Our culturally diverse community so that's better yeah our culture so take out that first diverse and add culturally instead of cultural and then I'll read that and see where we stand by working together with stakeholders we will provide alamro students with highquality 21st Century Learning that builds Upon Our culturally diverse community and I think we need one one last thing at the end two L's and a y on culturally two L's and a y and the word okay the word hour before a um culturally in between upon and culturally put the word our o Ur no no no before culturally upon hour yes go ahead trusty can we take out together because it kind of standing the same thing twice so by working with stakeholders we will um I think that's okay so it's the the the audio kind of got a little better maybe if you put it by your like not on speaker I don't know or maybe headphones or something but what hear me better oh that's y okay man sorry about that I know it's more annoying to you guys so I was thinking take out together um so we don't repeat the same thing by working with stakeholders we will provide uhuh so take or together with stakeholders we will oh I like that better so take out by working might B and capitalize together working together just take out that and take out working too so let me read it as it is I think the word working is implied but let's read it and see how it sounds together with stakeholders we will provide alamro students with high quality 21st Century Learning that builds Upon Our culturally diverse community and then something else at the end to close it I like that I like that take out all can I ask your question question where is where is all I don't provide all alrock provide alrock students that's I think that's I like that too uh you had a question trusty Chavez um I I know that it's a culturally diverse Community but what does that have to do with educating the students that they're culturally diverse because in the m in the vision statement we said that we're preparing them for a diverse and competitive world so if the world is diverse and competitive then we're going to use the diversity that we have in our district in order to prepare them to step out into that diverse World okay so thank you I just asked that question for somebody in the community thanks they got their answer okay uh did I hear someone else try to say something if not that that was that was me I just wanted I wanted to hear it now before we add anything else okay read it again yes okay together with stakeholders we will provide alamro students with high quality 21st Century Learning that builds Upon Our culturally diverse community and then something at the end to be able to compete for the jobs of the future can we write that for now actually to prepare the students to compete yeah to prepare the students to compete for the jobs of the future there you go or careers of the future to prepare in a competitive World well that's in the vision so we probably don't want the same exact word to prepare how do we say it to prepare the student the student on might can you put um to prepare Community to prepare our students to prepare students our students to compete hold on we we'll get there let me just put something up there to prepare our students to compete for the career for the careers of the future take out the check out the for careers of the future yeah okay and again this is this is still working draft yeah it's still a working yeah go now read it to compete for hold on she's on for careers of the future and take out world I think it sounds too much like our vision so let's I like the way it sounded before together so here's here's the vision first let me read the vision and then I'll read the mission that we have right now and also it's 8:48 just as a time check so the vision that we have is all alamro students will be ready for the future in a diverse and competitive world all alen rock students will be ready for the future in a diverse and competitive world the mission that we have right now now is together with stakeholders we will provide alamro students with high quality 21st Century Learning that builds Upon Our culturally diverse Community to prepare our students to compete for the career to compete for for a future career or something like that future careers so I mean I think it's similar to The Vision which I think is intentional because yeah it is intal it should be I I do think that we're now talking a little more specifically about how we get to that Vision I agree I thought it said competitive world so so I I I like it and then because we we will bring it back later when we get what the others were saying in in case it it something Catches Us and said oh yeah we should have put something like that in there you know so I I I'd like to go for it now with that and I'm okay with it okay hold on so we have a trusty travez can we just put in a competitive World well I kind of don't wna I kind of don't want to put the exact same words as the as the that already has it on the top you don't okay no should I I like um I like the way it sounds if we say to compete for the jobs of the future but I'm just I'm I'm kind of figuring out if I like jobs or or careers so should we just put in the competitive job market I think I like careers to compete for the careers of the future so marel can you put to compete for the careers of the future and then before we go any further but it looks like we're maybe kind of close here getting close Dr Bower do you have anything um I mean you see the process that we're going through here and building off of what what you uh proposed initially so do you have any thoughts or comments about how're how we're going about this I love this I think this is very to what we are trying to accomplish I'm so happy that you guys are coming together H Mariel we just need to revise a little bit um if you read it again uh board president so that we uh clean it up I think this this is very strong this is very very strong for my very humble opinion okay so let's I'll read it again together with stakeholders comma might B after there together with stakeholders we will provide alamro students with high quality 21st Century Learning that builds Upon Our culturally diverse Community to take out the word b yeah to prepare our students to compete for the careers of the future not world so now that's cleaned up I'll go one more time and I'll I'll just read the mission to the vision too Vision all alen rock students will be ready for the future in a diverse and competitive World Mission together with stakeholders we will provide alamro students with highquality 21st Century Learning that builds Upon Our culturally diverse community to prepare our students to compete for the careers of the future I like it I like it I mean acknowledging once again that it's a working document we can refer back to the 08 and those other ones to see if we feel like we need anything that's missing but for what we have in front of us and the work we've done tonight I like those two um trusty era or trusty kto anything while I call on oh you said okay yeah I like it motion to approve by Chavez let's move this let's vote all right so there's a motion or do someone oh we have we have to take public comment but there's a motion on the floor and a second to approve the mission statement as most recently read um for the alrock school district uh we had no further questions or comments ments from the board I do see public com can you read it again just yeah the motion on the floor is in reference to the state the mission statement or the proposed mission statement together with stakeholders we will provide Alam Rock students with highquality 21st Century Learning that builds Upon Our culturally diverse Community to prepare our students to compete for the careers of the future hold on sorry about this um it's okay I um the vision is what we will do correct the vision and the mission is the mission is what we are doing at least from what I've seen in other mission statements and so I think there would be more more appropriate to say together with stakeholders he's cutting out I can't hear can you hear me now I can he I can hear you now you just cut out for a little bit okay it might be your connection because I can hear Beano perfectly can hear you fine I can hear Beano too okay go ahead so um together with stakeholders we provide alumrock students with high quality 21st Century Learning that builds Upon Our cultural diversity blah blah blah blah so instead of we will it's this is what we do um because uh the mission statements that I've seen in other places are this is what we are doing or th it's it's what we're doing not not what uh we will do in the future so for example if we take a look at our neighbors to the north and Barry Union School District provides all students the skills to become lifelong Learners and successful so it's things that are being done whereas a vision is this is what we're gunning for in the or what sorry about that this is what we're jeez about say what we're shooting this is what we're aiming for oh my gosh used to be I think it's nothing but a bunch of references so I I kind of didn't catch the last part but basically what you're saying is that um just a little tweaking of the tense of it so just that part uh instead of we will we say we provide just take out will yeah will because if we say we will it's not it's indicating that we that we're going to in the future instead of this is what we're doing I mean motion to put uh we provide I like it to okay so you're amending the motion to just remove the word will correct to State we provide I'm second n okay so we have a motion by trusty Chavez a second by trusty Marquez to accept the amended motion um we have public comment at least least one public comment do we have any other public comment trust I mean um avar or Mr Sanchez anything else come in um Mr Bano no comment okay and Mr Sanchez or anyone else that's monitoring the email yeah I'm also monitoring the email no comments okay so if you can unmute um Joselyn Merz and um do we need the clock for this one or are we okay without the clock okay so once your mic gets unmuted you um there you go um you guys are on fire tonight I'm really think it's great um the one thing that I just wanted to comment on was I absolutely loved what trusty Marquez had said earlier on about the lifelong Learners and I was me too a suggestion might be just to add in to prepare our students to be lifelong Learners and to compete for the careers of the future just a suggestion okay thank you I'll second that one um I actually do very much like that not just the wording but the the concept of lifelong Learners um you know because I guess as a quick commentary I I think it's important and I think we're doing this but it's important that these aren't just words but that these are actually you know they are meaningful and drive what we're trying to do and I think that concept of a lifelong learner is important um so if we were to add that and amend the motion further it would be read together with stakeholders we will provide alamro student oh no together with stakeholders we provide alumrock students with high quality 21st Century Learning that builds upon our culturally diverse Community to prepare our students to be lifelong Learners and compete for the careers of the future don't delete any of that Mighty Bell just put after to prepare our students to after the word to type be lifelong Learners and and then before in between the words students and two can you put B no no no in between students and two there you go so then the way it would read is together with stakeholders we provide alamro students with highquality first century learning that builds Upon Our culturally diverse Community to prepare our students to be lifelong Learners and compete for the careers of the future motion to approve all that the last edits so we um um Dr Bower yes uh marel did you catch that she caught it okay we got it okay any further thoughts on that or or discussion or are we ready to vote on we need a second we have a second um trusty Marquez I thought yes you have a second Okay do um so as amended further um that's the that is that is the motion that you're putting on the floor correct and the second okay so at this time we'll call for the vote in dividually on our mission statement as amended um so I'll call as I see you on my screen trusty Chavez yay trusty erera yes trusty Kino hi trusty Marquez hi and myself I passes unanimously we have our mission statement um for alen Rock School District thank you everyone once again for the teamwork good job everyone Dr Bower just making sure that this is item 303 thank you thank you very much for clarifying that was um a vote to oh I have to reopen board dog the to a vote vote to approve item 3.03 you said Dr B I don't have it open yet 303 3.0 303 3.03 okay thank you for the clarification and good work everyone so now we're the remaining item which um we said 10:30 was our time right and we're gonna we have a potential issue at 930 that I don't think is an issue um but we're trying to expedite this so we have have to approve the district governance handbook and this is to the question that trusty ketto had early in the meeting as to how we we would approach this I'm thinking at this point that we just go Section by section and ask people if they have um questions or comments but I really want to be mindful of of to the best of our ability limiting the comments while at the same time making sure that we don't um skip over important things in the interest of time I would rather um well I I just want to hear thoughts from everyone at this point about that approach it's good with me let's go okay um so we'll go with that I don't hear anything else so okay let me look at my version here so we are starting on if if you open up the one I'm looking at the version that I'm looking at is the one that I for me says clean rev I guess revised governance handbook that's what I'm going to be referring to but the other our others going to be looking at different versions or or can we go ahead should all stick the same one can we also compare it with the 2012 cuz there was some stuff that was deleted and then I think that should be in there so so I um because we got this version from our legal council I'll assume that what we have in front of us in the clean revised governance handbook is is a good safe one to work off of so I think I'm thinking we work off of that but simultaneously some of you that want to look back at the the redline version can certainly do that and bring that into the conversation but just for the purposes of being on the same page the the one that we'll be looking at is the clean rev governance handbook one does that make sense okay and that sounds okay Mr ruis yes are you talking that the red line is the 2012 2013 um no it's not it says it says R the title of it is Rev Redline governance hand book draft May 2020 that's the title of the one that I'm referring to but the one I'll be working off of is the one that starts with clean so I'll be working off of the clean rev governance handbook but if you want to go back and pull things from the redline version you could still do that but it's just that we'll be kind of as a as a baseline we'll be operating from the clean version is that the uh is that the one that's right before the samples of the vision and the no the mission Dr Bower board president yes Dr Bower very is the very for on your bll trusty Marquez is the very first after the yellow page on item 301 she has the the um the the hard copy board president so she's reading out of if you see the very first copy trusty Marquez and whoever has the book I I have I have the hard copy book and it and it a governance handbook approved by approve no board approved and blank 2020 that's the one truste Marquez that's the one he's referring to okay so then after that there there is the um the 2012 13 in red and then the 2013 cleaned up yes yes the 2013 Marquez is the original with no red light one that we use at the very beginning yes yes great I know I got it I know which one to use okay so again just to repeat I'm going on the clean one but certainly bring in stuff from the other version if where you see fit so so the first page is um the and I made edits so I'm not so the vision and Mission we've done that already the governance um handbook let's see so here on this page that you have Mighty Bel can you go back to that that one no the the one below that not the table of con that that one for this one my only thing is that I think we have those are reversed I think the vision should go on top and the mission below that the way it is on what page is that page three um item a capital A it has Mission at the top and then Vision below that I would say that we should have Vision at the top Mission below that is there any suggest I mean um objections to that not at all in my books doesn't have that it just says Board of Trustees Mission Vision com commitment proposed and core beliefs so um I don't know where we are I'm on the clean rev governance somebody Dolores I I have a also a physical copy so I think he's referring to the table of contents if you don't mind my saying sorry no it's okay so the table the table of content say the ab C D and E yes the the next page after that where it says a missions Vision commitments purpose you see that oh yes I see it yes we should invert that and and do the vision first okay that's yeah that's what I have okay so so you just skipped a page past the table of contents is that correct yeah so can we go back to the one before the page before that because on the table of content under C what was commed was what the board need on on on the item C where it says roles and responsibilities and I spoke about this earlier what the Board needs from the superintendent was one line what the superintendent needs from the board was another line can you please put that back yeah so insert what the what the Board needs from the superintendent under the C I think that was moved to roles and responsibilities yeah and roles and responsib ility that's can do you see that you see it so yeah on our it's up there it's under roles and responsibilities where I told you a b c d it's in there okay so on this one that that they crafted you only had two lines on the roles and responsibilities and originally there was four so no on on the clean version it has on are you looking at the version that's titled clean rev governance handbook no RS doesn't say any of that clean doesn't say that no that that's the title of the document doesn't say it no it doesn't say clean red or nothing yeah rev rev in the tech in the print one there's nothing there that says that man so just refer to it as after the cover page right after the yellow cover page yeah okay and unfortunately I don't have the hard copy I do it digitally so right after the cover page I guess thank you trusty yes right after the cover page so c those sorry no no no no no Chavis can can you read what B says for you read B on the table of CT who are you who are you talking to trusty Marquez Travis I was gonna I asked her to read B okay uh roles and responsibilities so the whole thing is roles and responsibilities of the board and superintendent the next line is performing the board's responsibilities the third line what the Board needs from the superintendent that's what was omitted and this other line what the superintendent needs from the board so that's not the version that I'm working off of let me just read to you the version that I'm working off of because it includes I think what you need so the version that I'm working off of the clean H version has B roles and responsibilities and then below that are four lines roles and responsibilities of the board and superintendent performing the board's responsibilities what the Board needs from the superintendent what the superintendent needs from the board those are in the version that we're working off of right now okay me and trust and that's what my my my Al my my book I'm looking at all of those okay so we're all together on that we're we're saying this speaking the same language here now we I just want to check Linda I know that we got several um copies versions yeah so do you have this book no I didn't get that this I I mean are the last board book yes like yes I do you want me to that one and not the other three that I received cuz I received different ones plus the board book special board meeting and workshop for May 21st okay so we're working off of our board book a special board meeting and workshop so for working off of the board book yes right there it says it and I'm and that's fine so on table see it okay okay so I think at this Point hopefully we're all synced up on what we're working off of now okay I apologize for calling it that clean stuff that's just how I see it on mine um so that's it sounds like that one is addressed trusty Chavez in the version we're working off of okay okay and we we talked about inverting the vision and Mission um so then below that where it says our commitments I would actually call that um operating principles I think to me these as I read them they don't quite um resonate to me as commitments they resonate more as principles of how we're going to operate and so that's a that's something that I wanted to do is is change them from commitments to operating principles ero yes what do it read right now what do it read right now um so let me answer that truste and then I'll get to you so right now it says commitments and then there's a whole bunch of bullet points that for instance they say our students are always at the center of our thinking and decision making do you see that part on your book no I'm looking uh our belief our core beliefs and roosing responsibilities no I don't have that one trusty marus it's right the page after table of contents the page after the table of contents is has an A and it says Mission Vision and then we just inverted The Vision on the top and the mission on the bottom yes that's exactly so the P right below that where it says our commitments what I'm proposing I was just read okay yeah what I'm proposing is that we change those from commitments to operating principles and and good to me let's keep on moving are you open to guiding principes what's that are you open to guiding principles um instead of operating yeah that's I'm okay with that that's probably better actually thank you what does it say what so instead of operating principles she's proposing guiding principles and I agree with that gu yeah guiding principles yeah and then everything the same going down um so I have a a couple of grammatical things that I could change after but one a bullet that I wanted to add a a guiding principle is and I have it in the third bullet point here um is we acknowledge that our community is confronted with many challenges and we choose to see those challenges as opportunities to build resourcefulness creativity and resilience in order to better pre to be better prepared to take on our futures I you know we kind of took out that whole thing about adversity and those things in in the um mission and vision statement and I'm okay I like where we landed but kind of to trusty kto and I think what he was saying and what I say I do think that it's important that we acknowledge that as a reality for our district and our community but we also frame it in a way that we use it as as as a strength and and not use it as an excuse or as a you know poor poor us or whatever but we got challenges it's a fact but we're going to use those challenges to to become even stronger that's kind of the sentiment that I'm trying to get at as one of our guiding principles trusty Chavez I'll go with it since it's important to you guys I'm I'm willing to put that in too okay any other any objections at this point I'm just going to go with objections no thoughts or question just in the interest of time any objections to that okay so I'll assume that we're okay I have a couple of more very basic grammatical things that I that I'll send later same page yeah and then on the the next at least on mine on the next page there's two more bullet points um go up my maybe maybe it's on go up one page and then scroll down no go to page three and scroll down to the botom um yeah so so the it's on that same page the last guiding principle that I wanted to add is we Foster a culture of accountability where we strive to view mistakes as opportunities for growth I think it's important and I didn't see it anywhere in these principles that we are we make sure that we keep hold each other accountable board and District staff and we do so in a way that we we learn from mistakes and not um you know come from a place of accusation or blame um and so so I wanted to add that as a guiding principle I'll repeat it we Foster a culture of accountability where we strive to view mistakes as opportunities for growth good go for it any objections all right we can move forward thank you everyone uh the next section is our commitments so I have nothing here I think these are all good commitments to make and these to me are actual commitments that it's appropriate the title are we okay with the Comm our commitments page commitment down to guiding principles whoever just said something States purpose whoever's talking I cannot hear I can't make I can't understand either and on my page our commitments maybe it's different it states our purpose yeah yeah didn't you change commitments to guiding principles no yeah but then okay so what's below that part that originally said pur our purpose okay so then I think maybe what I I'm proposing to change that to is our commitments so instead our purpose yeah because to me those um those are commitments will represent like yeah they sound better I'll go with that our commitments so down down a little more Mighty B um where it says to represent the community I think maybe the next page yeah instead of our purpose I propose to change to our commitments trusty kto is okay with that any objections to that to make those our commitments okay I don't hear any objections so I'm assuming that is okay thank you the next one our core beliefs is that there we go anybody have anything there well so we do have the section I mean I have a little gramat iCal that will be later but um that section and then maybe this is for um Mr Ruiz our priorities and goals do we need to do that all that work tonight as well um that's probably another a two hour session uhuh but in terms of to get that done tonight yeah that ain't gonna happen tonight yeah in terms of the um the kind of the recommendations that we got from the state as long as we approve some version of this handbook tonight being that we already approved mission and vision we we're covered right yeah okay so for PRI our priorities and goals can we basically all agree that we're going to need to come back and continue this work further to to um to do that yes and we just kind of skip over that section for now sure yeah I I but I like for me um our priority goals I I would like it just to be our goals I don't want our priorities in there I think just our our goals so when people would say it wasn't that one of your goals I do like that you know then we say yes that's one of our goals and we have priorities but that's a goal that we are focusing on I like that as well so the proposal is to just change it to our goals and then we would have a we would have a study session to develop our goals consistent with the vision and Mission that we've now created is any objection any objection to changing it to just our goals okay so we will make that change thank you that's a good one so we go to the next page or where it says B rolles I do have a problem with our core beliefs but um if we're going to bring back come back for our goals can we just kind of touch on that um the uh yeah let's because like I don't have no belief cores on on Business Service you know and uh human res I mean I don't that's for staff you know um May it's a different definition or something but I but I know it's going to be cumbersome just to even get into the discussion of it so let's agree then Mel can you make sure that you capture that when we have our next study session for goal setting to also include belie core beliefs and that whole section that trusty Mara just referred to just make sure that we capture that when we come back to it thank you for that um the next section roles and responsibilities do you that trusty Chavez and and does that um match up with with what your concerns were and your your desires about the this section because I don't have anything here I do have one one bullet point actually in the section so this is under performing our responsibilities under the section of we ensure accountability to the public I wanted to add the bullet point um that's something along the lines of monitor the effectiveness of the board as a singular body so just just to be consistent with um you know our annual board uh what is it called Board review evaluation evaluation self evaluation yeah there you go that this bullet point would kind of just refer to that we monitor I think I think we we just put I think I think if we just put um our self evaluation and then underneath we start saying that we're going to monitor ourselves through the process of the instrument of self- evaluation okay so if we maybe if you're taking this might well just change it to monitor the effectiveness of the board through a self evaluation I think it's called board self evaluation period yeah that's what I was trying to say the wording on it should be board self- evaluation um well actually the way I'm proposing it because I'm not I don't need I'm not wan to have the exact title there um this because this is describing how we ensure a accountability to the public um can I say something yes I think since the state and csba all refer to it as board self evaluation can we leave the lettering like that board self evaluation so how would did the bullet point read monitor the effectiveness of the board through a board self-evaluation that's what you would put under you you would put under that well I'm trying to just keep it as to one bullet does anybody object to that monitor the effectiveness of the board through board through the board self- evaluation can I reward that go ahead monitor monitoring the board self evaluation period no I don't think that to me that doesn't no that's a different meaning I think I like aresto um can we ask Mr roio responsibility yeah maybe you just put board accountability okay do it to the board self evaluation I don't know maybe that's yeah so just monitor the effectiveness of the board through the board self- evaluation roio yes how how would we how would we phrase that so that it you know everybody would be looking for self self board evaluation how about just something like uh timely conducting our annual board self evaluation there you go yeah conducting timely board self- evaluation okay or conducting timely annual board self evaluation got that might I'll say it again conducting I forgot what I said now conducting timely board self evaluation yeah you might need to go back to the to the video or the audio might but I'll leave that to you just in the interest of time however we just said it a second ago that would be the the bullet point because I forgot at this point sorry so does anyone have anything else in this section okay so then we can go to the section what the Board needs from the superintendent is that correct is that what we're on let's see yeah okay and I do have one bullet point there that I put at the top um and it's yeah and I had the one that I had asked um asked um roio do you know where that's at Roo the one you said thanks for asking that I'm sorry which part you remember in the beginning I said I'd like to know why the other one is not there um about the um see if I can find it on yeah they that you know we have a a formal agreement yes where we sign up where where would we find that one under this one uh I mean I since it's an entire book of governance principles my thinking would be that the signature page would be at the end it would be the last page okay okay okay so the one that I the bullet point that I would want to add is at the top is accountability um that's I think it's consistent with what I had above Tre all board members equality equally is that one in here I thought I I thought I read that somewhere um yeah it's what the board meets from the super attendant the very first one says treat all board members equally are you so are you suggesting to change that or no where do you want to add what you want I mean it doesn't really matter where I just to me accountability is important whether it's Dr Bower or whoever it is what I need from a superintendent at least is accountability like things that happen in the district you know to the extent that it's realistic for whatever situation I need accountability so that's and same you know same consistent with what I think I said on the other one for the board accountability yeah to ourselves our self- evaluation so I agree so Ro roel would that be um would that be a first bullet um on this page just by itself accountability or do we put it at the end with the um you know the signature one I don't think it would be with the signature page it would be in here there would be in the back in the back of this page where it's blank we would add accountability I mean I don't I'm not quite sure what you're meaning by signature I don't mean that I mean I don't see that no that's that's that's that's something else that's something else I want to go ahead and finish this because roio did say to add it at the end so I'm okay with that okay yeah I'm Sor okay and then the other thing I I I mean I don't know if we have the time but for this one it's in two places where it says no surprises I was just hoping to expand on that a little bit that's kind of it just feels kind of vague to me um and I guess May go ahead so the no surprise on that would you would refer into what it so it's in what um what the Board needs from the superintendent no surprises and I think it's also in another section what the superintendent needs from the board um but I just that phrase no surprises it's just seems vague and and and to me it's not very useful um or or I was just hoping to expand a little more but I go ahead I agree I think it sounds kind of cheap like no surprises instead say you know the superintendent will not blah blah blah blah instead of uh instead of saying just no surprises it sounds kind of like a little unprofessional to put it in a yeah so roel since we're going to we're going to ideally approve this um tonight but then for the like grammatic IAL stuff or whatever how would we bring it back to like for instance if we wanted to expand on this while still approving it tonight um but you know the expansion of it coming offline or later could we would we just approve it tonight however we end up with it tonight yes and then bring it back in as a second reading or something like that or so um so you still have yet to to agree upon the priorities and goals so it's got to come back anyway okay um so I would say that uh approve it it but subject to the correction of the errors the typos and then the specific comments that uh you've made tonight with the understanding that it will be it will come back for the priorities and goals and and at least we have something that that has the uh imprim modor you know of the board that we can forward to the state auditor to show that we're making making significant progress on this okay Dr bar is that what you were going to say yeah if you approve it that way sort of like a first draft or something like that I think that will suffice okay so um marel can you just note that that when we come back we want to look at that for both sections no surprises um and also from the superintendent I I it was late when I did this but I didn't I don't remember seeing this one of the bullet points was provide the board with requested information in a timely manner so like you know if if we're in the meeting and we ask for you know the budgets from the past 20 years or whatever I don't know whatever that that we get that information back at some point that's the the the idea behind that one so does anybody have any objection to that provide the board with required information in a timely manner yes I agree with that one I agree okay now for this next so anything else for that section because I have a question about what the superintendent needs from the board I'm assuming if we have nothing else prior to that um I'm assuming that we're kind of opening this up for the superintendent to tell us um because we can say what we think the superintendent needs from the board but this is specifically at this point well maybe not because this is not a document this is not what Dr Bower needs from the board this is what the superintendent needs from the board so we I think we have to think about it in terms of whoever's in that seat what should we expect them to need from the governing body the board I mean so but that being said Dr Bower if you have input into this section that's helpful to us are you still under the accountability right uh so there's what the Board needs from the superintendent which what we were talking about a second ago and then there's a section what the superintendent needs from the board so I guess my comment is that as we're doing this we need to remember that um we're not talking about Dr Bower this this is about the superintendent in general if Dr B leaves tomorrow the new superintendent should still everything here should apply to that superintendent and if I can say anything something yes uh trusty and then trusty Chavez after that and Dr B if you have anything after that I'm in agreement in that you know whether it's Bower or the one 10 years from now uh that she look at this and see if there's something missing um I'm in agreement and asking her okay trusty Chavez uh something in writing saying that board members need to respond in a quicker manner so Ro would that would that would be where this one the M mine that I asked about an explanation of agreements and signature page um well this this this book was originally signed by the board it wasn't signed by the superintendent yeah and then and I think that what the state wants is what the governance board um the elected officials have in place so I'm in agreement with what you said um that the state wants to hear more about our function right so back to trusty Chavez's statement so you want something like um um board will respond to requests from the superintendent in a timely fashion timely manner that's good okay mighty Bell or whoever is getting that board will respond to superintendent in a timely man super requests from superintendent in a timely manner yes Dr B do thank you Dr Bower do you have anything in particular that you think would be important here for yourself or any superintendent here I'm good thank you okay and then the same you know that no surprises comment is also the second to last bullet so we we've covered that already anything else on this section all right I don't hear anything so we move on to the next section that I have C positive governance team culture Norms is that what everyone else has looks like it okay uh see what did you read excuse me what did I'm sorry I I didn't follow where you read that last part oh it's it's item C positive governance team culture Norms we're on that section now oh okay so let's not you you skipped I was waiting um that um I wanted to add the U what was left out about the uh what is it called agreements to facilitate governance Effectiveness explanation of agreements and signature page wait so where are you with that agreements to this was this was delet this was deleted this was Redline so where where was it or let me look at my Redline version yeah look at the red line book and it is under uh let's see I oh I should have marked it um agreements look under agreements okay D on D I see that whole kind of section there uhuh um Mr Ru do you have a he had a big comment on that when I we opened up the meeting we might yeah and at that at that time I didn't really I didn't have the context I didn't see it can you briefly review your your rationale on that one Mr Ruiz for the um removing that section yes so if you look at the clean what we call the clean Revis draft that you're walking through right now uh at the end of that document there is a signature page showing the date of approval and signature for all trustees in the in the 2012 version of this document the agreement was actually before the end of the document and so it it was unclear to me whether the signatures of the board members were memorializing their agreement to the whole book or just to the agreement that were being stated in that section so you're saying go ahead well well the the agreements that are listed in that section in the old draft there's only 11 agreements that are in there but you know as we can tell at walking through this document there are a lot of principles and understandings and agreements that are being agreed to here so that's why I move the signature page to the end of the docu and I didn't limit the scope of agreements okay so so it sounds like two things one you moved it to the end to to clarify that those signatures are are signing off on the entire document not any particular section and then are you also saying that the specific content in these in these tables is encapsulated did throughout the document and so we didn't have the need for the information in the tables well no no no that the or are those tables there at the end so if you look at the old version of it uh it says agreements to facilitate governance leadership uhuh um and it was it was actually this portion was actually signed by the all of the board members at the time and the superintendent Norma Martine is um but there but but my my view on this was that there were many things being agreed to by the board in terms of governance practices throughout this document this this document wasn't necessarily just about the relationship between the board and the superintendent it's it's a portion of it but I would say this document the book the handbook itself is more about the principles of governance the mission and the vision for the district how board members relate to one another um how board members conduct themselves as board members and then also a relationship with the superintendent but that's just a fraction of what this handbook is about okay so trusty Marquez um and quick first of all we're at 9:41 so we have we're under an hour now um but is what was described by roio does that make anything different for you or or clear it up or oh no no my my thing is that I wanted to bring it back so that it would be an agreement that um that is a practice and there's no way we can get around it when we have elections and we have new new people sitting on the board that we this is one of our tests that we have to go through this this governance book and then we can submit or we have it already signed that we're all in agreements with what the governance book is saying we have clarified it for the new ones they understand it do you understand if we just take it out we just put it on the shelf and we're done when you're saying it take it out are you referring to the the signatures themselves or the tables the boxes that are on there or both okay so the one that was taken out isn't anything like the one that's in the back that do you see the one that's in there right now I mean yeah it's it's not anything on there it it it looks to me like when approved by the Board of Trustees that we are looking and signing signing um um the uh code of conduct okay and the other one that was taken out it clearly just says says it all about the agreements to facilitate governance leadership okay and that if we put it back in there then we're talking about the entire handbook so if we put the signature page like had a signature page on its own as a separate final page would that be provide enough Clarity for you that would demonstrate that those signatures well it's not it's not providing the clarity to me you know I I mean I could care less whether we we sign this or not sign this you know um it would just be put up in the shelf and it wouldn't be coming back to us for any reason but if we put the signature page in there that it that it has to be redone because every every line was taken out and and the new one put in there saying that um on a timely fashion where elections occur we have to go back and look at this handbook with the new people that came in now if the board go stat quot oh the Board finish and then I'll start okay yeah if the board goes status quo and everybody gets back reelected to their seats then there's no reason for us to redo it because we already have signed it and done it trusty Chavez um actually that makes sense to me and I think especially if there are new board members but I think that this should be reviewed um there was a butt go ahead trto um isn't GNA one of the changes going to be that we're going to as a district the board continue continually revising or reviewing this uh this handbook already anyway so this wouldn't be an issue because we're going to be committing to revisiting the handbook constantly on a regular basis correct uh roio can you answer um and I see you trusty Chavez yeah the question roio that I have is by virtue of the fact that this current body signs it does that make this book invalid in any way if a new board come comes in or is the is do they all need to reigned to be in agreement of the contents of the handbook yeah so it doesn't it doesn't make it invalid invalid no it doesn't trusty Kino's point you know the best practice from a governance standpoint is to is for the board to review these documents these these governance documents just like your board bylaw uh every two years and so if there's a new if there is a a new board member in the future that would come up during that person's term anyway and then the board would would would sign this and you know as a practical matter we can we can insert some blank uh signature lines in case um you know to allow for some period of time uh when a new person comes in and and when this book is revised by the board I I don't really see that as much of a problem okay Tristy Chavez I can and then can I say something go go ahead and I guess I'll be after her thank you because this is my issue and what I'm saying that whether it's necessary or not necessary we have to have a process here and the process is not that we're going to be revising it all the time and sometimes we may not be be revising it all the time you know look how long um look how long it's been since we got to this look oh here's look how long it's been we should be already doing this the superintendent evaluation but the covid-19 it just threw us off all our tracks you know so these things you know that are put in there they're put in there for a reason to trigger off of the process that we should be doing so that was my comment to what happen to the signature page where we're all going to agree about about this book that we put together we put work into it you know and it's gotten diluted from what I remembered it from a long time ago and but I'm not hey I'm not going to be complaining I'm gonna look at what's in there but I want I want some things to come back and this to me is something this to me this is one that that we should bring back okay trusty Chavez okay I agree with her and especially since I was asking from the beginning about the handbook and then I think that this helps news trustees grasp everything more because there's so much to learn and if we can help the new ones coming up or even um repeat some of this stuff it'll just solidify it more but I think this is part of good governance to do that and also if the public you know is in on the meetings they learn a lot from this too how you know what process because they're always asking well why aren't you doing this why aren't you doing that this explains a lot to them too okay so then what is what is I'm not sure what the proposal is so what is the proposal then at this time that we change or go ahead truste uh Marquez I think you were asking for it first I I know I just asked for it roel did you understand what what I'm asking not I'm not asking for a proposal I'm asking for this to be it was redlined I'm asking it to come back and maybe we don't need all that language that's in there right now but it can be simplified saying that this is agreement to facilitate the governance leadership by you know all of this AB B C D or whatever however you want to word it do you understand me oh okay okay yeah absolutely so yes we can add that language at the end on the signature page because again I did include a signature page for all board members as the last page of this revised document we can add that language to say that as board members you're committing to uh use these governance practices in your role as a trustee the other issue is that um once this book is adopted your board bylaws will be amended to provide that the board will regularly review and update not only its policies but the governance handbook as well so I agree to that okay so that's simple enough all you have to do is add add that portion to it where we all sign it and we know that it any time and it doesn't have to be at when new elected people come in somebody might leave and we do an appointment well we have to just in the interest of time I think we're we're on the same page now I think we agree so we can we're okay to move forward right given what Mr R just mentioned yeah he said he's gonna add the wording on there so yeah okay so we're good thank you can I say something yes sorry just real quick it just uh came to my mind so since Mar is taking notes for our uh study session when we come back um just so she can put on there a note about um I don't even know what to name it but consequences of not falling through or um supporting the uh to ensure that we follow this guidelin and then I'll go into it more when we come back in our special session okay thank you thank you um you got that Mighty B I I have a question for so roio doing this is a process that is going to be you is going to be supported by the the bylaws right or not the what did you just say it's going to go on the your board bylaws yeah the board bylaws right okay so the board bylaws U for not doing this the consequences are going to fall on only the board members well I think we that's what we'll discuss when we have the next session to discuss um stuff that we don't get to tonight okay that's fine because yeah it is a discussion okay yeah it's a little bit more detail yeah yeah so um so I'm still in section c under norms for operating in a governance culture of trust and respect um it says we agree to and then down a little bit more marel where it says operate Within our respective roles and yeah that section so the third bullet down are you on page eight excuse me I'm sorry for interrupting right where right where I don't have pages on mine mine is different it is yes yes it is it's p than you right where Mighty right in the middle right in the middle norms for operating so the the third bullet down the one that says view the superintendent as a key player on the government's team understand the superintendent's role and responsibilities respect the expertise of the superintendent and seek Prof profal I don't know if there's supposed to be more there but I would add advice from the superintendent on all board business um it's on there it's already on there no to me it seems like something got left off there respect the expertise of the superintendent and seek professional advice I I believe that's intended to be a full sentence sentence it's just the formatting of the document that we can fix yeah somebody hit the space bar and it took it down to the bottom oh it does say advice there already oh I'm sorry mine shows it as it looks like I did an edit but okay sorry about that um grammatical so I'm I'm down in D governance team protocols and there's like a a table there a couple columns so does anybody have anything there I don't have anything there okay I don't see anything maybe we should maybe we should ask where else people want and uh because if I mean I I didn't mark any of these so um I didn't either so I'll just I'll I'm gonna continue anybody Mark yeah did anybody Mark any of them that we need to refer to no I don't I don't see anyone so I think all that whole section D is okay with everyone um I do see a section though the way way at the last page of this D there is a highlight um and maybe Ro can explain the Highlight that put on there that it just says to be considered by the board that's the one I was going to bring up too the only one what page are you on it doesn't have a page but it's the the last box on this on this um one that we're on right now on D I think it might be page 13 maybe thank you uh we don't have pages on that one sometimes we do sometimes we don't actually it's after 13 I I guess it would be 14 okay yeah so anyway it's the one that says to be considered by the board the whole governance team will participate that's the one you're talking about right trusty Marquez uhuh yeah so what is Trusty I mean roio what is that one there clarify the reason I called this out highlighted it for special attention is because this is a provision for new board member orientation Workshop by the entire board to cover all of these issues as far as I know uh this this board has never done that um you used to have a retreat in January but the retreat was focused around not new member orientation but about the district and the future of the district so I I just wanted to call it out so that you were aware that this was in here and that this is not consistent with at least your current most recent practices trusty Chavez okay I think we should add it in but I also have a question here under where we it says we agree when it says the new board member packet so is that in addition to the governance handbook um can we put marel can you roll that down a little bit I can't see it all where do you it says governance packet on the top under where it says we agree under protocols it says we agree new board members will receive a new board members packet that includes relevant information about the school district and about governance team operations also uh can you add the governance handbook so everybody gets a copy as soon as they get on the board or or it's revised please yeah I like that so something like new board members will receive a new board member packet and governance handbook that includes relevant information about school something like that yes please yeah okay so your bylaws already provide that new board members should be given a copy of all board bylaws uh and also be given Brown act training so when I work with new board members I usually prepare that give that to them and give them Brown act training so that but yes the governance handbook should also be a part of it thank you yes good point Thank you so back to the um to be considered by the board what do we want to do with that I don't know he just said that our board bylaws the 900 series um has this canel well what basically what he said is that there's a statement in here that we're going to do something that we haven't been doing which is to to have a orientation slash offsite or whatever that covers all of this stuff um so roio um listening to the conversation here it sounds like this is something for the superintendent not the board well but but this provision in the handbook basically was creating a whole new board meeting a whole new you know looks like probably a two or three hour meeting at a minimum uh yeah this isn't a responsibility of the superintendent not the way that it's framed here so uhuh can I can I say something be hold on I I have a question and then we'll get to you trusty Chavez okay didn't we recently um have um we had something about training the president and and vice president as well providing an orientation each time I'm I just wanted to we we put that into something didn't we B and okay I just wanted to just remember that okay truste Chavez um I remember uh three other trustees uh in the past said that the retreat was very helpful and that they learned a lot and I think if we can ask Mr roio maybe to facilitate that especially since and and and put it in the if it's not in the bylaws put it I mean we don't have to get into the specifics of facilitation although I think that's a good idea but basically I think what we need to decide is if we leave this section in here the whole governance team will participate in a new board member that part and then by doing so we're now committing to something that we have not been doing and so I I agree that it's important as well um but I am curious as to to hear from trusty or trusty era about um their thoughts on this particular can I say one more thing especially especially since the state was looking that we didn't do all this stuff for us to take the next step in the next level that looks even better if I was sitting on the state I would think oh these guys not only did this but they're taking it a step further and they're trying to implement more things and and making sure that they are proactive instead of reactive when the state actually dings them for something that's that's it thanks a good point any other thoughts on this I tend to I think I'm tending to also agree that we should leave this in here and make it part of our practice our governance practice truste with me yeah I agree I think we need to leave it and I think we should be doing it unfortunately we've been you know cleaning up so many things that we haven't been able to do that but I think it should stay there uh especially moving forward that we should go back to that sounds like we're all in agreement um with that so we will leave that in so take out to be considered by the board we considered it and we we want it in there can I make one more comment yes can we put a timeline on this like this month or next at the at the very furthest next a timeline on uh implementing it well it says in here in January following the election of new board members yeah okay me that makes sense all right that's good okay um so we go down to there's another section I don't know the page um the topic and rationale is responses to emails or other communication there's another part that says to be considered by the board the that one that marel has up there so can you explain that one Rio yes so um unfortunately to really understand the context of this you'd have to look at the red line but the 20 12 version of this handbook in this section in the protocols said that the board would designate one of its own to receive and respond to emails on behalf of the board and so I highlighted that because that's not something that I'm aware that this board has done in the recent past um but I also deleted that language and highlighted this section because I felt that that language in the old book was inconsistent with the bylaws which says that the superintendent and the board president are the only authorized spokespeople for the board I'm sorry for the district uh and only within the authority given to them so this one gave me a little bit of heartburn and I thought I would highlight it for the board to think about and which which one is it on the red book in the red the red line it's the it's in the table towards the end under protocols and it says topic and rationale responses to emails or other Communications sent to individual board members response okay page 12 of the red line trusty Marquez okay yes I got 12 now I was I was two pages I before that we haven't been doing this is that what you said roio I'm not aware that uh you've been doing this to have a designated spokesperson in this role so my I mean just to off the top I my thought is that I don't think it's a bad idea to have a designated spokesperson to speak on behalf of the district um but I just would be wary of or making sure that we're not taking away the ability of an individual um board member to have their own opinion and ability to express themselves um as an individual as an individual board member is that consistent with what this is here or that's my initial concern too but I think that uh this is language that's from a board that's trying to micromanage and so back to Roo's point that you're gonna go ahead and step uh it's inconsistent with what our policies are already because we already have a spokesperson uh that's superintendent and the board president so so basically what I I think what I heard you say and what I think I agree with is that we basically remove this section and go with or word it in a way that is consistent with the um the uh I'm drawing a blank the board I think that you right the first time let's just strike it because it sounds like it's from an era where there was conflict or Strife with the superintendent and it's no longer can I uh so I'm I'm reading the top and I'm reading the bottom and it's kind of different because I think it is important and maybe we can say it somewhere else and we don't have to figure it out tonight we could take it all out but that it's important that is as a school board we are responsive to the staff um whether it is we pick one person or we identify as you know we as a board will respond within whatever um 48 hours or whatever we decide but um I it's important that we as a board um whether it's we say it here or we cover in the other areas that we respond to staff in an appropriate you know amount of time um and that's not really reflective of the top where it says you know other communication S I mean it is but it's more about the response I think um to emails or requests I'm thinking more like if a staff member is requesting something of us that we are to respond with an appropriate time and and the way I read this is is less so I mean I think those things are important and I think we did capture them somewhere up above in terms of timely responses maybe it's maybe we can flesh that out a little more later but to me what this is speaking to is kind of um you know the spoke the importance of having a United singular voice as a body um which I think is covered in the board bylaws the way we have it um and that way there's no there's no confusion about the ability of an individual board member to a pine on any particular topic so so trusty kto has suggested to just strike this section I I don't think I disagree with that because we have it covered elsewhere roia clarify this um this this haven't we in the past practices have hired PR people to be the spokes people you know the person that's going to be speaking um um and and now if we take this away who's going to be the spokeperson well right now under your board bylaws the superintendent and the board president are delegated with being spokespeople uh on behalf of the district um and speaking for the board the board president that is um it wouldn't impact uh the board's ability to hire public relations professionals and in the past my understanding is that you know public relations professionals have worked on sort of messaging for the district and sensitive issues and then also responding uh as the face of the district during crisis but you know I just want to read from the old language uh from the 2012 um version of this and what it said was the designated spokesperson will vary depending on the issue or situation in crisis critical or legal issues the superintendent will be the primary spokesperson and may involve the board president at her discretion politically sensitive issues the superintendent and the board president will serve as spokespersons so um you know it's almost impossible for me to think about how a politically sensitive issue could not also be a crisis issue or a critical issue or even a legal issue and then with respect to the representation of the district the you know your counil our firm in this case um serves at the will and pleasure of the bo the board not the superintendent and so in my practice when there are sensitive legal issues affecting the district the board is always and the board president is always engaged in the public messaging and response on those types of issues so this just s this really you know I didn't want to make too much light about it about it giving me heartburn but but uh there's just so much in in the old language that was that is inconsistent I think with how the district has actually handled managed these Affairs in the past and also you know in my view you know not always necessarily the best practice um so so then um so pling devil's advocate here unless say Lord and behold we have a superintendent went rogue on us and we take this away and she's the only one that may may allow the board president you know to get involved in this or not um how are we protected how is the board protected if I mean you have heard horror stories of when you have a superintendent that goes Rogue you know and um uh H this this is only doing you know I I always do you know double sword things and saying but if we do this what's the downfall for this side or what's the downfall on that side and this is what I'm asking here we do away with this um it doesn't sound good well I I I think the old language is problematic um I would agree that unless it could be substantially narrowed uh I would agree with um truste Gino and the board president that this this whole section uh on the protocol should probably be deleted unless until unless and until it can be finally or more finely tuned uh to how this District actually has operated uh and in a and in a way that doesn't um take away from the authority of the board so that's my concern so it sounds like the the legal opinion or here is to remove this section um I I'm not in I just want to go on record I'm not in agreement with this this section so I I would prefer that we really sat down and narrowed it and refined it in instead of just throwing it out um I'm not really because let's you all you all sit here right now let's take eladia out of the picture and we have a different person and he's like he or she is like going rogue on us you know and how do we stop that you know um when we have something in place like this but if we narrow it and do it more concise to to that it's conducive and safe with with some Outlets to say oh here we have a loophole where we can stop this person right now the superintendent she's gone Rogue blah blah blah blah blah you know right here it's just like everything is placed on the superintendent and not and and the board's going to have to answer for that because she's not elected in that scenario roio would the board bylaws not cover us to be able to act as um to have the board president act as a also a a representative and Speaker for the the the district that that's right it's already covered in your board bylaws and I think this just confuses the matter if I can just actually give you one real quick real life example um about six years ago or so actually it was almost 10 years ago during the ver ver Gara litigation um in which Alam Rock was a defendant along with Los Angeles Unified School District um anybody familiar with that litigation the superintendent of of La unified at that time was John Dey he took a position supporting the plaintiffs in the litigation against his own district and against his own board there was no coordination of effort messaging or even legal positions in that District between superintendent and the board and that that the board had taken a position against it it was a defendant in the litigation and um I I think that really you know damaged and undermined the district and its defense in that litigation so so to correct encapsulate it then if if we struck this and if a superintendent went rogue according using what we have in our bylaws we would be able to as a board um speak on behalf of the district to to take away from that Rogue superintendant is that accurate yes okay trusty kto and just a quick reminder we're at 10:15 so we're almost there but got 15 minutes trusty kto and then trusty Chavez you know this whole deal of these unenforceable handbook and if if somehow the situation is that horrible and if you have a major of the board in place they can go ahead and take action and let go of the superintendent so there's no need to say oh my God this one little sentence right here in this handbook is gonna give us the control that we want if you have the three votes you got it you don't need this language all it's doing is confusing and at the end of the day it's unenforceable uh a an elected board member is going to be able to go ahead and get communication and respond to those those emails that are sent individually to their to their communic or to whatever whatever sent to them and nobody's going to be able to turn around and say well that's in this board book says you shouldn't respond they're gonna say you know what go talk to the voters in all honesty this is a this is a strange language that maybe out of frustration of something that was going on at the time was put in place but I don't see it as enforceable or yeah so that's my trusty Chavez thank you so I'm gonna read what they put in uh 20072 2008 uh handbook so under topic and principles responses to emails and other Communications sent to individual board members we believe the school board is a representative body and board members have a responsibility to be accessive accessible and responsive to members of the staff and Community it is important to respond effectively and uniformly to emails and other written correspondence from staff or community members credibility and Trust are developed in the community when we are consistent in our communication about important District issues protocols we agree that all emails other than written Communications received by individual board members about school district business or situations will be shared with the superintendent as quickly as possible next bullet the superintendent design will determine if a response is warranted and if so will craft an appropriate and or legal response depending on the topic the superintendent May consult with the board president about the communication and may include the board president and or the entire board as correspondents next bullet point is the superintendent design will follow up with all members of the board so they are aware of the status of the situation the last one is board members will be the first recipients of any reply that is sent out that's it that's what it had on the handbook for 20078 and that's what is is not in there now yeah can we add similar language no I think we all I I feel we ought to listen to what general Council said and then to refine this even better take take what she just read take what we is here that we want to keep right now we really should go through it again um but um I mean I'm I'm looking at it from from the aspect that if this person this goes Rogue and this one is saying she's in charge she's the design and we do something else that's only one more thing her lawyer can pick out of there and say look it's right here it says it says it right here it says it right there and it says it right there and they took it out of their hands they micromanaged they did this they did that or whatever do you understand how we need to protect not only the board and the district but we have to protect the superintendent as well and we just take it all out and not leave anything in there I think that is like the last thing we should do that is wrong we need to refine it condense it or you know hash it out to where you know you you were saying you were getting sick of it or what was it you're getting a stomach ache about it or whatever we should I don't think that we should take it out I think we still need you know to do this and look at it I would I would agree with tend to agree with you that um you know that scenario is not what we would want and if we didn't have anything else in place and we were just taking it out and just with nothing then I would agree but what I'm hearing is that by if we take it out it defaults to what is in the bylaws which does allow for us to do exactly what you're saying so so by taking it out we're not putting ourselves or the superintendent or anyone at any kind of risk be risk because it is spelled out in the um the bylaws so purpose for the for the just in the interest of time because it's at 10:20 let me let me ask this of you trusty Marquez for the purposes of approving it tonight approving this board byw this governance handbook would you be open to um striking it for now taking it out for now as part of the approval but along with those other top or I guess we're not even approving it tonight right um no we're not we're not approving it we're not approving it tonight because it has to come back to us fully fixed yeah so so I I just think that we you know we we need to not sweep it under the carpet we just need to refine it we need to condense it concise it to what it really is because you're correct if if this is taken out then then um then we have the by loss to go by right however the one the one that trusty Chavis read gave us more power in that one I I I thought maybe I need to hear that again because I thought it was taking power away from us but trusty Loa do you had a comment and then we're gonna start winding down for tonight just because we we only have a few minutes so trusta so I heard you say that uh we're not approving this today so I wasn't too sure about that especially because you know we've got into the weeds of a lot of these things um so I just wanted to clarify that my understanding to it yeah my understanding roio is that we can't approve it tonight until we include all those things that we say we were going to come back to right you can you can conditionally approve it oh that's right okay subject to us bringing back the revisions to you so then that was let me restate my question thank you for that trust so um trusty would you be um open to conditionally approving it tonight with that thing struck out of there um as just the as a condition of approving it tonight with the condition that when we come back and revisit um to amend with all those other sections that this section will be included in in further discussion and refining but just to approve tonight yes okay trusty chave I mean there's a lot of language in there that does have to go you know I agree we can we it can stand some more discussion so I I I would be open to that trusty Chavez so we can also approve I think if we put superintendent SL design so it's just not falling on the super it it also involves uh a couple of Trustees a couple of them two of them at least yeah but we'll talk about that when it comes back but I'm I'm I'm open to conditionally agree we're going to revisit this me too well we're going to we're going to remove it for conditionally so we're going to what we approved tonight will not have this but upon the condition that we will revisit this along with those other sections that you know depending where that goes may be added in or refined or whatever at that time not may can you put will be added in well we don't know it depends on the conversation I mean maybe we discuss it and we I I can't commit to something for sure same as the other [Music] sections you sound like a car salesman okay well I don't say I can't say will because I don't know where that just put this to rest let's vote on whether it stays or goes right now and then the will of the those who prevailed will carry so I'm uht letting it go I don't so can I my comment so how about let's let's have trusty kto um I'm in support of uh I'm in support of removing this I've made it clear and so I'd hope that yeah we can just move on by follow and I um so so you're calling for a vote on this particular section yeah so that we can can can move on this either it comes back it stays or or we get rid of it uh and so I'm proposing that we get rid of this uh and uh you know that's my position I I would hope that if there's a support here we can be just clear and no longer have to continue to beat this dead horse so I think I I'm of the opinion that it I don't I think we should take it out but I do I am I think that I'm open to further discussion of of it that's why I would be I would put a motion that we approved the governance handbook with this section stricken from it um conditionally and that this section along with the others identified earlier on would be Revisited um for a final approval or something along those lines as so moved you're asking for it seemed like you were asking for motion yeah is is the way I stated that um Mr Ru is that enough to yes yes okay so does everyone understand the motion I'm I'm saying that we strike this section completely and that being oh I'm sorry we still have one other does anyone have any other stuff under the code of conduct or anything else in this okay so I don't hear anything so then the motion would be to strike the section that we were just talking about con and then conditionally approved the governance handbook with this section and the others that we've talked about earlier tonight um to be brought back for further discussion and final approval of the government's handbook that's the motion as long as Roo says it works yes it does so that's my motion and miss the only thing I would add is that we crossed out a lot of different things and I don't know that I would want to bring all of those things back no there was for consideration yeah there there were just a few specific sections that we said we would um revisit I don't remember off the top of my head but I guess my thing was is that um we just you know adopted as is with that area of strien asto mentioned and then in the future if any one of us want wants to bring anything else back or revisit that we would do that then well so um president I'm going to give you a second on that on that motion Okay and like call for the question and let's just get done with this because we all know where it's going to end and that's fine it's late let's just get it then there's a motion on the second um and a second on the floor for the the motion that I put on the floor um so we'll go ahead and call for the vote to conditionally approve the government's handbook with the agreement that there are several items that we will revisit to for final approval um truste Chavez hey trusty erera yes trusty Kino hi trusty Marquez yes and myself yes as well so we have conditionally approved our governance handbook we have a vision statement we have a mission statement and we have two minutes left in this meeting so is there anything that we're forgetting roio in terms of compliance or anything we got everything um well I'm sorry did you call for public comment on that uh I did not nope can I I was I believe there is any that I can see but is there any public comment anybody who's monitoring there was a a race and I don't know I think it's Joseline who had the hand up is she still here yep oh there she [Music] is I think that's her public comment so thank you for that and so other than that are we are we good everything else Ro Helo yes can I request something when we dive into it next year ever if we can uh go over maybe code of conduct just you know read it out line item by line item so you're saying that that be one of the sections also that we just that we read so that we're all reminded we didn't get to go through that specific part okay so we'll have that as one of the sections um all right well I want to thank everyone tonight um I know we went over my I got confused on the time but I think we got a lot of work done everyone did a fantastic job thank you marel for you know jumping in and getting that done thank you Dr Bower for crafting some stuff for us to go with thank you Joselyn for supporting us and everybody else you know I think we did a great job and it's only you know the The Best Is Yet To Come so thank you everyone I will adjourn this meeting at 10:30 on the dot and everyone have a good weekend be safe and take care night good night every good night good night

there are no recognition and awards presentations secondly okay and emotionally okay motion by mr smith and second by mr casper sorry it was a little difficult to hear rocol mr abedrabo yeah miss bassford yes miss beltran yes mr canova yes mr daley yes mr casper yes mr smith yes miss danny yes there are no communications or announcements next order business there is no first reading of policy next quarter of business is presentation of reports from administration advisory committees and special committees you will now have the clifton high school graduation plans by the high school administrators commissioners tonight we have joining us mr doctor our high school principal and victoria rogers uh vice president clifton high school who's also the graduation coordinator and they want to share uh the current plans right now for our uh commencement ceremony with uh you and the community share my screen so that you can see our presentation okay so obviously when all of this um started to happen and we were quarantining and forced into social distancing we needed to really get ahead of the game we have 700 graduates that we need to plan for and make sure that we're keeping them safe and still celebrating them in every way we possibly could so we've had a zillion ideas come through our minds come through our computers read a lot we've researched a lot and we think we came up with a pretty pretty good plan um as of right now we are fully following the executive orders which have made it very clear we cannot host any in-person graduations um we do have full plans for a um virtual graduation which is a whole production it's not just a powerpoint slideshow like what you're seeing right now um it's professionally produced it's really going to be something to keep forever um and the students are still going to be invited to the stadium to have a picture taken in their cap and gown with their name announced over the loudspeaker so we think we're we're really trying to get all bases covered here um we just want to make sure that we're keeping everybody as safe and healthy as we possibly can and we're trying to give them that full experience so we've handed out caps and gowns to our students already uh they're going to use that for the videos that they're uploading they're going to use that for our pictures that we're going to be doing at the stadium and then if we do at some point have a on field graduation they'll have their caps and gowns already to move forward some of our important dates coming up as mr proctor just said we had a cap and gown distribution yesterday and today it went incredibly well the students were wonderful it was so great to see everyone um on the 16th and 18th students are going to be scheduled pretty similarly to how they were the last couple of days where they'll come to the stadium they'll be allowed to enter the field through one gate approach the stage they'll have their name announced as they would at a real in-person graduation they'll receive their um diploma cover they'll receive their yearbook if they purchased one their senior t-shirts um their name will be announced on the loudspeaker as it normally would and they'll get their formal professional photographer picture that always gets mailed to them over the summer once it's edited um june 19th is our actual virtual ceremony that airs at five o'clock it'll be a live link that everyone can access around the world if they wanted to um and our potential postponement of prom is july 30th we do have another alternate date set in august um and that's really if we are allowed to host major events at that point we will we just had to block off a date with our venue um we had just mentioned that on the 16th and 18th scheduled alphabetically we're going to kind of make a circular rotation this way there's no traffic going back and forth and we can still maintain social distancing so they'll enter on the side gate they'll approach the fields they'll have the entire backdrop that everybody has come to know with our formal graduation and then they'll exit through the ticket booth over by the snack stand this way they're not actually crossing paths they will be permitted to bring their parents or guardians or two immediate family members this way they can hear their name announced and thoroughly enjoy the moment um that's when they're going to receive their diploma cover cover as they would on graduation night their senior t-shirt yearbook um at least we're still going to have like a formal program to go that follows the whole ceremony through that they'll see the next day the next night so they're going to receive their program then as well mr doctor uh to go along with that pictures that they'll be taking uh they will be receiving those in the mail over the summer just like they normally would they normally get a picture done at the stadium at graduation this would just follow suit once they take care of all that it'll be mailed to them so that's no different the virtual graduation ceremony that we have planned for june 19th we are um using the company herf jones they're usually our supplier of some of our varsity jackets our rings when we get class rings or our state championship rings they have worked with marching order in stage clip those are pretty major production companies for anyone that's been involved in any type of video production so all three of those companies are working together and what we do on our end is we upload our graduates and their information so all of their honors and awards the valedictorian the national honor society the distinguished academic awards um our student council students all of them will have every student will have their their information uploaded but all of the honors and awards will also be listed automatically on their slides they can then upload a picture in their cap and gown um if they want to and upload how to say their name every every student will have a slide and their name read even if they don't access the website if they do access the website they can personalize it a little bit more they can write a personal message of up to 200 characters um you know thanks mom and dad type of thing um and they also can create a little video clip so i have listed here you can see some sample um videos i can click on them if you want me to but the students have received these samples so that they know what they what they're actually uploading to um and then the actual ceremonious production will include everything we've come to know at the stadium we're still going to have our band play the processional and the national anthem we're still going to have our speeches from the class president valedictorian salutatorian principal superintendent board president and mayor the band is going to play the recessional at the end we want to make this as much of our in-person ceremony as we possibly can and we think we've we're covering most of our bases there we're very fortunate to even have this opportunity uh miss rogers had the foresight to look into this right from the very beginning and as soon as we saw what the eventuality was going to be we received the approval needed uh from dr robertosi to move forward with this a lot of other school districts don't have this opportunity they've been blocked out so their schools have no potential to have perf jones and an organization such as marching order and stageclip um help with uh their virtual graduation and i think the end result of the surprising everyone um so far the only slight downfall i can see is that it is going to be long every student has the opportunity to upload their personal slide um i'll go back for a sec and also their video clip the perk to that is you can also search through there's going to be a search bar as part of the presentation and once we get through the speeches and the songs and all of the routine pop and circumstance for the graduation they can sit and watch all of their friends they can search for a specific person they can download this and keep it forever they can keep the link it is going to be part of a youtube premiere link which is normally a paid service but this once you have the link you have access to it so it's not of any charge for anyone um and then as our as we mentioned before we do have a date blocked off in july and then another potential date in august the prom is set to be at the legacy castle in pompton plains it's where it was last year it's gorgeous and the kids loved it if we are allowed to host the prom which means we are allowed to have large gatherings we're also going to be inviting the students back to clifton high school that morning where it'll be kind of an open house feel they'll be able to hang out we'll give them their regular class day brunch they can get their yearbook signed take pictures meet with some staff and just have that final moment that they're used to getting at the end of the regular school year the reason that we have these dates set up for prom is because we can't set up a date for graduation but it is our facility so if we at a moment's notice in beginning of august here that the governor is releasing us to have until graduations we just have to figure out how much time we need to set it up and and we can do that we don't need to book a date ahead of time so that's why we don't have a date or a potential date for an on-field graduation if we get allowed to do it but we did have to secure these stages for the prom with the legacy castle yes we can we can create an on-field graduation on a whim it's our own facility so we have full access to it when you're trying to plan in essence a really large party for 700 people we need to make sure that we have a place that's big enough locked off for us so that's why we needed to secure some extra dates for the prom um i think that's just about all on our end unless anybody has any questions i'm going to unshare the presentation now do any commissioners have any questions yeah i have one there was a sample listed there on youtube is that something that we can play yes um i will share that with all of you i'll send you the links i'll send you the whole presentation so you can review it again and in there the links are live and they're available they're generics they're not specific to our district it's just a presentation to show you what you can expect for hours so jim daley you have a question um who will be at the uh virtual graduation as superintendent i assume and will be there be any other uh staff administration or board members uh president it's going to be a production that's already been produced okay everyone will be viewing it for the first time it'll hit a live link at five o'clock on june 19th so we'll all be distanced in our own homes and able to view that all together everything else is pre-recorded okay so i have another question i would just like to add good mr cano thank you i just would like to add that um we are also doing this same similar format for our eighth graders and our fifth graders so the eighth graders and fifth graders will have this very similar type of virtual promotion ceremony or moving up ceremony okay so the question i had is if before september hits if the governor comes and says now we can do graduations is that something that we're also planning on doing absolutely we're not closing off any bets for anything the virtual graduation is simply because that's what we're permitted to host right now so we're going to cover all of our bases and do everything we can within the time limits that we're given great uh jim smith i just uh i just wanted to commend mr doctor and um rogers and your entire team on uh putting this all together i know this is not ideal for graduates it outright stinks we all feel terrible about it but given the circumstances your team has done a tremendous job on putting this together without having a lot of experience in doing it um you will going forward um if we ever have i pray that this never happens again but if uh if this ever has to be done again people will be calling clifton to uh to assist them but uh great job to all of you and um i really hope that as mr konova just said um i really just hope that this is all going to uh uh enable us to uh give them a a real graduation on the field graduation uh so we can only hope and pray for that but thank you for your efforts the administration on a great job i'm president yes yeah um i just like to echo mr smith's comments i like to congratulate both uh mr doctor miss rogers doing a uh fantastic job thinking out of the box thinking about alternatives um i i don't think you you could have done any better than that so uh my congratulations and appreciation goes out to both you and and the entire administration on putting this together thank you miss danny yes i was given a suggestion by a community member uh it's something to do with the seniors i'm going to forward it to the superintendent so they could take a look at it but i just want that community member to know that anybody that on this board that is getting suggestions we are taking care of them i know we uh we've been as board members been very vocal and i thank the administration and his staff for listening to us and and to uh what they've been put forward thank you thank you any other commissioners matter if i may um [Music] i'm gonna echo the rest of my colleagues but i'm not gonna you know um go too deep in that part but the one thing i want to mention is that you know while we are a big district and other districts across the country are doing various things uh i'm pretty confident that that miss rogers and and mr doctor are taking the best you know chances are for our students because we are not a 50 person um senior class or 100 class we are close to a ballpark of 800 kids so the fact that you know while graduation is not only a right of a student but a right of a parent to watch and be proud of their kid of their child i'm sorry that i i'm i'm pretty confident hopefully if we're able to get out as soon as we can the next few weeks months or whatever it will be that that we are doing the best thing we can for our students and the health population for our town so i want to thank you as well any other commissioners okay thank you very much mr doctor and miss rogers for all that you're doing and at this point you know if you want to sign off you know there's since there are no other questions okay thank you very much mr doctor and miss rogers okay next order of business is committee board reports is everyone hearing me yes i hear you i'm just waiting for the thing to be highlighted okay because i i didn't i didn't know if it was i was hearing like a lag over here i didn't know if there was something with my internet um so i apologize if there's any lag okay so the first one we'll go through is i guess the finance committee because that's how it is presented so finance committee i'm trying to open up the content it's not seem to be opening okay let's just go first all right yes education okay so i have two separate minutes so first i'm going to read the minutes from the april 29th 2020 meeting the education committee meeting began at 5 30.

Stewart thank you very much for reports I had some attached to the agenda and then I have some updates if you have questions about the attachment [Music] okay working on the update are the revision for the entire for the e budget for the current year it turns out that the amount of money carried over from the fiscal year nineteen budget was not enough and so our current budget is increasing by two hundred eighty one thousand four hundred fourteen dollars which is really helpful since there were a number of positions that had been budgeted into some grant funding for which we have no revenue so I had moved those positions over to M&O which made it very tight but this helps us and as of today we have a balance when you take out what's already been spent in what's encumbered we have a balance right now of four hundred twenty eight thousand six hundred eleven dollars so next week I should complete the the budget revision and then I will make sure you only get copies plenty early to look it over before our next board meeting then we can work on the new budget which of course is going to be you know we can do it but then that doesn't mean it means anything so we'll be doing that the flip side of that is if you recall at the beginning of the year we got notification that we had overspent our budget by about one hundred and thirty five thousand dollars and I thought that was M&O so I thought well that's fairly easy to absorb into a fifteen million dollar budget turns out it was not it was in the capital budget and over the course of the year you know how these dollars float around with the state but over the course of the year and ended up being that we overspent by 125 402 we did Twitter our prop 1-2-3 money in there which was supposed to have been a hundred and twenty five thousand which would have actually washed up at that overage but ended up being a hundred six thousand five forty five so our capital budget for this year was really down by about eighteen thousand eight hundred dollars a little bit more than that but I was feeling really good about the fact that we've got especially since I had to move positions into mmm I was feeling really good about the fact that we have a little more money and it still gives us some cushion for carry over so I thought that was good news for y'all a sad note today one of our bus drivers I know I'm sorry one of our mechanics was getting off the bus over at the high school bus learned to go home slipped and slipped down the steps and fell backwards hitting his back and his head he has broken ribs a punctured lung and broken thorax and was being airlifted to Las Vegas about an hour ago in a lot of pain but alert and those kinds of things so the will and Patricia had called the Alliance immediately who gave them directions on what those directions appropriately and they will keep us informed of his status right I did have a question from your budget yes the four hundred thousand dollars roughly - the eighteen hundred and capital with us that still leaves us about a four hundred thousand carryover yeah because we the eighteen thousand in capital what they'll do is take it out of next year's capital they won't pull it out of this this is a no so they'll pull it out of M&O so yeah that gives us an overage in in capital the the thing that's kind of saving us in capital if you recall we received since the beginning of this fiscal year five hundred fifty thousand dollars in the VW settlement right and we didn't get it all at once we got 440,000 and then we got another hundred and ten thousand the district had ordered five buses we had made the original payment to the bank the lender four hundred and twenty five thousand or whatever last month I went ahead and paid the rust off paid off that lender which left us eighty thousand eight hundred dollars from that five hundred fifty thousand so right now out of that eighty thousand is really nice because it's in the capital budget and we've needed it to cover a couple of things especially some things that we're getting ready for reopening and we want you know we want our sights safe and some of those kinds of things that have that are capital items so we've used a little of it but my intent is that when we roll over to the new budget we'll make sure that we've got that that money's still earmarked for transportation so that if we needed a vehicle of any sort or any kind of thing we we still have eighty thousand a little over eighty thousand for a you know transportation capital which is really nice any questions for dr. Stewart the electric mentions I don't see an agenda item for that but you mentioned that in your write-up is that correct mr.

chairman you have a quorum Thank You Carol we will stand for the pledge you think just gonna put the flag I think we're gonna have a special guest talk us through the Pledge of Allegiance for me good job course of course Hey Murphy's Law obviously after the like what seems like literally thousands of hours ooh meanings of has since March I've never seen that happen yet well Marlene thank you very much for that welcome everyone we have two other special guests tonight we have Isabel and RJ who we've missed for some time welcome back guys and but we have your student report what are you guys up to what's going on it's been a while okay so a new group called carts against Corona was created and cards against Corona was created by grace you as she come right in team and Morgan zoo of CHS juniors and they are inspired by stories about social media in what they've seen about the quarantine and the purpose of this donation drive is to have residents from all over Cheshire donate handmade cards to show their support and appreciation for health care workers and they all who made big posters and collages and then they donated them to Yale Harvard and st. Francis Hospital and they've also teamed up with the Yellow House and multiple CHS clubs and organizations such as NHS and young Dems in order to spread the news of the donation drive and to get more people involved and they collected about two hundred and fifty cards and also numerous PPE and yeah that's carts against chroma okay so we'd also like to add that Ct kids against Corona was created to help health workers also and a hundred percent of donations will go to Saint Francis Hospital and we do have a venmo and a PayPal number and a link for a GoFundMe in our report which we can provide if anyone is interested in link crew has also been creating lots of videos to send messages and of positivity to freshmen because obviously we can't really have like a freshman orientation during this time and so we have to kind of compensate for that digitally CHS students and staff have created a video of poetry in honor of the annual poem in your pocket and we can send you guys a link to that YouTube video I think it's unlisted but we have anonymous document we created we could share with you and the chester ram has been visiting and surprising the class of 2020 so don't look out across town for that hand on facebook and social media so there's been a lot of discussion about what is going to happen for the seniors because it is their biggest year of high school and they will be graduating obviously not in traditional way so we have met on May 13th and May 17th to discuss the events of planning graduation with dr.

electric yeah yeah they they came in did a walkthrough I had reported that a month or so ago they came and walked through our campuses I gave us an energy audit and the one sheet that I'm sharing with you is kind of their quick summary I'm supposed to meet with them next week for a detailed summary so if any of you are interested in being part of that meeting let me know and we'll do that it's a be a virtual meeting but they'll give us a report on how they could save us some money over time you know front us some things to purchase things that we probably need some capital things that we're not getting a real support from SMB on and present you know their case for what they could do to help us out so Doug if you're interested in being part of that or Brandi you know or you they are really good to work with and really have good information but that one she kind of gave you a summary of what they thought they might be able to do for us if we want my thoughts on that were still paying to capital outlay on the previous electric on it yep wait until we get that paid off and clear the way plus I'm not too sure that NEC won't do one of these honors if you ask them so I would like for you to check that I'm not too excited to jump into another art at these these whole time doing that for nothing no that's true so I'm just throwing my peeling my dogs out there thank you to know about it because whatever we do with it is going to come back to the board it's not the kind of thing that I'm going to make a unilateral decision on it's you know there's too much money involved to just decide to do it the sad news is that I remember when that other audit was done and all of our lights were changed out that's what we're so painting for and they're still fluorescent and so most sites now are rolling over to LEDs which are huge savers in terms of electricity and those kinds of things but yeah it's a that's a that was a long-term payment thing I don't remember exactly how close we are to paying it off but I don't think we're very close so worth checking into something else - thanks Doug yep dr.

yes okay we are coming back to Publix action and so we'll need to do the Pledge of Allegiance we'll call the meeting to order we did okay so um I'm gonna turn it over to Kylie because we have videos that are from our high school state of before we've all been doing well during these trying times since we have not been at school I've been unable to inform you of grants activities the past few months so I'd like to take a moment to reflect upon the events of the 2019-20 spoiler as a whole and to inform you of what grana has been doing to help our students while learning from home the 2019 2020 school year truly has been one for the record books due to Granite Hills breaking records in all areas throughout the entire year this began in August when we held the largest most successful Club Rush ever held at Granite with hundreds of students joining clubs on campus the immense size of club rush carried further into the air when ASB hosted the best homecoming halftime show at Granite in years and sold both the most homecoming tickets and winter formal tickets ever sold this was also our most successful year for all of our sports on campus and our numerous clubs that do charity events aside from improving events sports and community service activities that granite already hosts we also introduced many new ones this year we introduced a brand new Writing Center that was immensely successful and well received by the school continuing upon things we introduced to improve learning we also hosted a free AZT available for juniors in order to see the results of having students test on computers versus with pencils and paper while we focus heavily on academics for students we also focus on activities that help promote good values and students and teach them valuable life lessons this year we improve these activities by transforming our weekly PBIS lesson from Cougar culture to the forum our staff worked very hard to ensure this transition went smoothly and it did not go unnoticed by our student body this is one example of how we adopt the changes around us in order to provide the best possible opportunities for our students another example of this is ASD forming an online platform to communicate more effectively with students and better advertise events our platform platform grew very quickly and as greatly helped us keep spirits up all students are learning from home well on the topic of distance learning I'd like to tell you about how grana has effectively adapted to this change providing students with a positive environment to continue learning our teachers quickly learned how to transform their classes online and have worked tirelessly with students to ensure that they are still learning and succeeding this transition was essentially seamless due to the wonderful work of everyone granny not only has the transition to online learning been smooth but ASP has also been working to keep spirits up from a distance since distance learning has been implemented ASP is hosted a virtual spirit week and online Granite Hills high school bingo and weed commemorated posts for seniors in order to ensure a transition back to normal classes next year smooth is also move officer elections online normally this is where I would introduce the Governing Council president for the 2020 2020 once lawyer to you however due to the fact that I'm a junior this year I was able to run for president again after all the candidates including myself campaigned for a week Granite student body voted online and the results were tallied I am pleased to announce that I will be returning as Granite Hills governing council president for the 2020 2021 school year I hope to carry this year's immense successes with me into next year thank you board members superintendent Nelson and attendees for taking your time tonight and every month to listen to my updates about granite and for providing the opportunities I have been given until the next time we speak granite wishes you all the best and wants you to always remember maroon and grey all the way thank you thank you and we have a report from Apple Valley High School as well remember for everyone but especially thankful for Alabama high school and you guys for making the most of it and supporting us through it all so on May 8th our seniors were able to receive their caps and gowns that they purchased some of our teachers ASB members and others from the community made coasters to celebrate our graduating class and hung them up on the fences and so we can see them while we drove Stuart don't have to look that up it sounds about correct but I'll have to look that up to have the details so I will check that and get back to you do those seem high or low load to you little high but then I think that really save some indirect costs back from that don't we yes we do yeah we do receive some some indirect costs and and then sometimes there's a difference between what we pay out for food and some of those kinds of things too so we get a report from them every month on on those things was that for if that's for this month I will check in there okay I'll get back to you on that and I'll report to everybody okay thank you and in light of that I'm not quite sure at all because I'm sorry I'm ashamed to say that I haven't looked at Alex's report I've looked at a bunch of his other reports from the meals that we've been doing between meals on wheels and when we originally did the grab-and-go and of course we didn't we didn't do as many meals and during closure as we did you're gonna do if kids aren't in school but we did quite a few and and so in terms of the doll or kinds of things compared to a year ago of course it's nowhere near what we are doing in april and anywhere near as low as we thought it might be and and then just as a side note we are intending to do grab-and-go meals through June and July the USDA has authorized the continuation of the summer quote summer program through through July so we're going to make sure our kids get fed even though we're not in school are you brandy you had some questions yes mostly some comments um there's one I thank all the administrators for their reports and I just noticed that the after-school 21st century virtual learning clubs like for desert Valley Fox Creek and Bullhead City middle school that's like a really fun and educational selection of classes I was reading those and I wanted to sign up for some so I creation of the social-emotional clubs as well as the a lot of steam classes I just think that was really well done so I appreciate that um I also want to comment on mr.

Solomon for all the help and we'll there his willingness to work with them and they're really excited to share that link with the community in order to get a chance to kind of see in order for the community to kind of get to see what these kids have produced yeah so that's really great students are taking AP exams which have started on Monday May 13th and will end on Friday tomorrow May 22nd and we wish some good luck and success and I think tests are 45 minutes it depends on some of the tests some are two questions so it's a bit different from the regular process and lastly remote learning has been a major transition we are still trying to adjust to this major process and the staff and CPS have done a wonderful time supporting us during this unprecedented time and a new grading system was sent out for CHS and implemented to ease the workload for students including for a core quarter for grades being 15% of the final grade an optional pass/fail for students who are struggling and/or need at this time and lastly is II and I would like to thank everyone for supporting us all the staff you guys health care workers during this time and we are grateful and appreciative for all that you guys are doing and continuing to make our world a better place that's all we have thank you I just want to say thank thank you and almost all the students everyone in that area school especially the high school for the seniors I mean there's a way I know it's been a very quick change to go online and learning but it's seen everyone well students have been my opinion phenomenal not just doing the work of the writing feedback and you know being honest make things better so I I was a little worried at first when you kick this off because we really haven't done this to Cheshire but it was real nice to see everybody come together I'm not there weren't any issues but those got to work through pretty quickly so you know thank thank you back for for your help as well I believe yeah thank you Tony all right I don't know if I missed it or either of you graduating sorry into the situation but congratulations I think we get him back for one more meeting there's one more business meeting in June so I hope you guys can attend and we can say goodbye but well do Tony do we do we have a center Jeff do we have a sense of who might be representative next year at this time do we know who might be it not yet okay thank you it's not easy to pick this sort of talent but they're our next business meeting will be after they graduate fourth before oh okay okay all right thank you any other questions Khan is from the border in yeah I just wanted to say I feel like we've been robbed a little bit of your presence Izzie and RJ you've done a wonderful job I do hope that you're here in for our June meeting but if not congratulations and thank you for all of your reporting this year it's it's really wonderful for us on the board to have these student representatives out there just reporting to us and it's a different kind of contact with the schools when we hear from the students themselves so thank you very much for all your efforts this year and boy best of best of luck and best of best in your futures going into college this fall is going to be a whole different experience also so hang in there if you guys are going to succeed I know it I know it in my heart and thank you for everything that you've done this year for us thank you so much likewise any board members seen as there is none Isabel and RJ welcome to stay I think a little bit later Jeff we'll have an update on the survey resource but you don't stay for now I'm sure I'll get your results you know we're meeting but moving on we're gonna get into audience I'm not sure there's any public cue question answer at this point or not Jeff it's one of mine anyone that may be watching we have another one towards the end so nothing I was watching it all Mike but hopefully get something later there are there aren't any comments yet but you can email CPS a CBS kovat 19 at TRADOC k12 dot CT us it's on our website so it's easier to just link then try and remember CPS kovat 19h sure dot k12 that CT dot us the only say that yeah god thanks Jeff moving on next time I agenda is the consent calendar and this is an approval of a grants resolution which I think we're an update and the grants apply for so further in the school year so it wants to walk us through that is that you Jeff yep so you have a copy of some of this in your in your packet but these are all federal grants so we receive funding for title one improving basic skills title to teacher support title three for English language learners title for student support and academic enrichment you've also heard through our board some meetings this year about the Perkins Career and Technical Education grant and that grant that Shawn McEwen was present for at one of our meetings that he applied for we did to enough forty nine thousand seven hundred and eighteen dollars we also get the individuals with Disabilities Education Act grant one special education and one for a preschool education we get some money also for open choice adult education you know about the Peck Jones money because you're always involved in in that process as well as Smart Start preschool so the total award grants for 2018-2019 was 1 million four hundred and eighty five thousand seven hundred and fifty five dollars the total grant awards for this year were increased a bit to 1 million five hundred ninety one thousand two hundred and seventy six what was notable this year is that the state of Canaan for a waiver for us because well for the state in that not all districts had the opportunity to spend some of that money for example we use title for money too in the grant that we proposed last year it was to hire some trainers around eureka math for our April PD day and then a day in the summer obviously those didn't happen during due to the campus closure so we are able to hold over some of this grant money until September thirtieth 2021 we're still waiting to see if they get a waiver for the title for funds so all of this money is used for its professional development it's used towards supplies some of it goes towards salaries as you know the Peck Jones money has been used for science and funding some field trips so it's it's a it's a we're happy to receive it and continue to apply for it every year thanks Marlene and has a quote actually I think Ann was first would question than Adam go ahead now let us listen earlier yeah actually Adam was first but I'll go since my mic is sorry Adam Marlene I'm just wondering if these grants are in line with Otton in past years or are they exceeding are there some new ones which ones are new which ones are sort of repeating and I asked this just a brief synopsis so not everyone individually but just to give us an idea they are very much in line with what we've done in the past I'll remind you that this is my first year in this new position but in doing a brief history of what we've received in the past yes a molar for example title for ten thousand last year or ten thousand next year this year last year so yes they're all about the same thank you thanks Adam okay there we go ah thank you um Marlene did I hear you correctly that the the 49 thousand dollar grant for the manufacturing equipment was approved yes it was oh that's great that's we're very excited now we would just like everything to open up so we can get the training and get the equipment and get it delivered and then for title one and if I recall that's where all of the what's it called is the federal the federal grants that are coming through for the we call it stimulus I know if it's a stimulus package or whatever save your package it is is there any hope that we're gonna be getting any more title one money because I think right now is that like ninety nine thousand was there gonna be any more from from those I think we're talking about two different things with the title one money is about one hundred and nineteen thousand the past meeting Jeff was referring to the percentage that we are able eligible to apply for based on our title one funding numbers okay all right thank you I believe in ninety nine thousand I was talking about was what came from the state food because as it airs Act yes yeah it was clear tonight and withing last week in town council meeting just thought I just thought I forgot it seems like January was so long ago these are these grant details in terms of the monies is listed in our budget book and section twelve details out the Perkins grant ID a grants kind of one title for but we do have in case folks want to refresh your minds but so awesome here we have the machinery is machine cut gotten in yet or it's just we know we're planning for and organizing all of the details to that which would be challenging on any but in the day it's you know little more I guess the OS that's thank you so glamour me know I didn't know if you wanted me to go into the details of the approval of the grants resolution or if you wanted to do that you go ahead yeah thank you I want to make sure I heard that right Marlene you this makes sense to me what you're saying but I just want to understand if I'm looking at this stuff correctly because I thought you had said before you sort of Rob I think for different things you said that it was in the packet somewhere do you have the Grant's report end-of-year yeah that's actually further down in the finance report Tim and maybe jump the gun a little bit on the detail the resolution basically is in our policy where you basically give me authority to apply for grants okay that's the shall endure and we can touch a little bit more on detail kind of go back to that when we get down to Finance yeah I pull up if again to deepen that grant stuff early on that was sorry it's okay sooner or later yeah no no no I just want to be careful about truthfully as I'm sitting here and I'm trying to click on a million different things we after last meeting I kind of mentioned something that was it just wasn't perfect which is fine if it's things aren't perfect but I just want to be I just want to be able to find what we're discussing quickly yeah that's why we kind of jump the gun a little bit that's all no no no it's not it's not a problem it's just I I want to be able to get to the stuff so that this is no big deal Thank You Marlene I appreciate it yeah I'm sorry so this is we're under a consent calendar on the agenda and the grants resolution is what we're really going to be discussing so Marlene yes and you have a great voice and you know once you walk us through the resolution since I did so well with the pledge Tony barking dog so in accordance with foreign policy three to nine Oh business and non-instructional operations grants and other revenue the Board of Education by resolution shall the superintendent to apply for and accept any and all grants as may be determined appropriate by the administration therefore the superintendent shall and to get new sources of revenue whether state local or federal proposed new revenue sources and associated programs to the Board for approval and implement measures necessary to apply for and receive additional revenues so in accordance with this policy the superintendent or his designee is authorized to sign all required forms for state and federal programs in addition the superintendent child informed the board II love all grants applied for and received with the exception of those pursuant to chapter 1973 of the Connecticut General Statutes at this meeting under the report of Finance Committee that says that I will provide you all with a report of the grant activity for the current school year Thank You Marlene so there is a motion it's listed on our agenda in packets to someone to make the motion to approve the consent calendar yeah go ahead okay I move that the Treasury Board of Education approves the consent calendar as presented thank you is very second Adam began tans got it any this any further discussion on the motion hey Gretchen yeah so I mean this too I just want to know I want to be clear on it if Jeff goes and does something and it's a grant with which a majority the board does not agree do we have to vote on it before he applies for it or spend up this this resolution provides me the authority to apply for grants and you know I notified the board the I would think that it would be beyond extraordinary for me to find a grant that would be applicable to our mission and vision that the board would disagree with but typically it's the same list of grants that Marlene just walked through it's the the federal grants the Peck Jones grant you know it's it's a rare bird that we find an appropriate grant that we qualify for that I can apply for but this allows us the facility is we've had historically to just allow me to sign off for the grant and notify you rather than try and get you to approve each individual grant in the time it takes for that okay and how many times since you've been superintendent in the last four years how many times has it been you've become aware of a grant and needed to needed to apply for it say in less than a month outside of these grants zero but these grants do sometimes pop up you're not aware I mean if it's a real yeah the the last Perkins grant for example okay that was the Supplemental Perkins grant that came up it had a very short window and that we did bring that to you okay I think I sign that one of them out mister yeah okay all right so they do come up and it's it can be a window of say less than two weeks it can occasionally be a short window yes last summer Jeff I don't think we ended up getting it but it was a federal grant right and it was like I was on vacation that's y'all talking and trying to get it through yeah it was an SEL grant we had applied for and didn't ultimately receive but okay and is this something that we vote on annually yes yes okay okay the provision for this grant pieces explicitly in the policy in the board policy okay so I think that you know when the board policy was written it was with the intent to provide the superintendent flexibility to be able to pursue fiscal resources as expeditiously as possible but nevertheless still notify the board okay okay all right okay thank you no problem any other question is a comment from the board members seeing it is none the motion presented is that the cheshire broad education approves the consent calendar as presented now all those in favor aye those opposed what one opposes ten motion passes thank you next up on the agenda is reports of standing committees starting with curriculum okay the committee subcommittee unanimously approved a recommendation to the full board for approval of a new textbook entitled essentials of comparative politics with cases it is available for community review and review by full board members at the office for I believe the next week is that our four-week period Marlene or you're a mute okay yep doing me Marlene I'm checking on the calendar it's either about a week or ten days the policy states two weeks we were giving it four weeks to Dakota right so anyone interested in reviewing should email or call the superintendent's office or any one of us and we can get in touch with everybody then Kevin Hamlin presented the results of the great three Otis Lennon school ability tests are all set a the test measures students abilities and helps instructors identify enrichment needs among among individual students 241 students took the test average score was 104 which is about the 50th percentile and only slightly lower from last year's test results so again these are to identify enrichment needs among individual students so next mr.

Camco Jade Sanchez Jordan Han jushiro Morales Kesling Sakura Benjamin toward Mina Edward Garcia Jade Sanchez Jordan Han Brianna Navarrete david'll upon us Angelina Liz aya raylene Rodriguez Mariah McMillan Savannah Rivera Kayla Avalos and Randy Garcia for those again those health-related occupational skills assessments listed there on to our Future Farmers of America chapter we have some recognitions here for various competitions and offices that they hold Hannah Kunkel was elected the region FFA vice president and a regional finalist and job interview both Madeline Potter and Alisa Scott were regional finalists in the Creed speaking competition which is sort of a important and tried and true FFA competition priscilla rushing is our FFA section vice president and Lana Leonard is the FFA section treasurer and if you you know these students and what they're asked to do though they are working their way to develop incredible leadership skill one of the things our students in the computer and media pathway are allowed to do they participate in a film competition called directing change and this is an important effort for suicide prevention this year Matthew B and Dora was selected as the second-place winner in the Suicide Prevention Film category and Angelina arias honorable mention in the animated short category just outstanding films that these young people produce and finally our last competition that just ended if you get a chance if you are at some point you can come by the art submitted through to the district virtual art contest we have printed and put up on the walls at the district office to bring some light and joy back into the building because we're missing students and those kinds of things Thetis smith and the director of curriculum instruction put together a wonderful art contest and so the students listed here where selected winners for the art contest amazed again they submitted them virtually but we did print them out so for the TK through second grade division we have Elissa Ragusa as our first-place winner Andrea - lot till Adonis for second Kaden love it for third cadence mario for honorable mention and same with Anika second Misha Subramanian third and we go Vasquez our noble mention and for the art contest well I don't have the 9th or 12th game names listed there but we will read make insuring and sending them a prize as well so just wanted to share those names we'd normally be clapping and shaking hands and and welcoming these parents to a night and hoping they went off and got some ice cream on their way home afterwards but we're in different times so at least we could do is honor them by reading their names and and bragging about them a little bit you can't and if you do you want to see the pictures they are on our website on the front page if you scroll down it goes into a slideshow below all of the celebrations for seniors so please take some time to look at them there are amazing pieces of art the next recognition is very difficult as well because we're used to having them in front of us and getting to celebrate or to high school representatives that are with us at each board meeting they're part of our group and I hope that when we are face to face again in the big room that we can bring them back and celebrate them in person I'm going to start with recognition for Riley Sealy who is heading from Apple Valley High School Riley has been an exemplary student athlete at Apple Valley High School her leadership on and off the field is exceptional Riley has been an officer in student government since her freshman year culminating with her being selected for student body president Riley's love and dedication to soccer is demonstrated by being selected to the varsity team all four years while being chosen as captain for her senior year Riley was chosen as mrl second team player for the 2019 2020 season and I believe she was actually selected and noticed about that online because we were at a distance Riley's commitment to excellence doesn't end with leadership and athletes she is a three year National Honor Society member and has been in the computer and media pathways program for four years which gave her the opportunity to complete it to compete in SkillsUSA she was awarded her academic letter and recognized as a distinguished scholar accumulating a 4.1 GPA her soccer coach Tabitha Medina said Riley is a four-year varsity player who has continued to grow and develop her leadership skills not only on the soccer field but also within the school on the school campus her strong and kind personality as well as her positive demeanor and drive will lead her to accomplish great things in her future Riley plans on attending Cal State San Bernardino in the fall majoring in math she hopes to become a high school math teacher and soccer coach and we hope Riley does that and comes back to Apple Valley Unified School District and teaches for us right the next one is Erin Fogarty she was the 2019-20 ASB president as a junior and I don't remember the last time we recognized an ASB president as a junior so that's a huge accomplishment and I know why every time you run into Erin she has a huge smile she's bubbly while doing great ja a great job increasing downs attendance and overall school spirit she also maintained a four point one to five GPA and took three AP classes she is a member of the National Honor Society and the mock trial team she is the vice president of Mock Trial and also a team captain as you heard earlier we are so excited to have Erin back in the fall as the senior reporting at our board meetings for the 2021 school year erin has a younger sibling that is just as bubbly as she is so it's got to be a family thing and I'm sure we will see other things in the future with Erin so we're thrilled to have her back and I'd like to just recognize them for all the work they did in each board meeting preparing and presenting to all of you thank you girls ladies and congratulations Riley on you're moving forward to college okay under public comments Kylie do we have any public comments I do not thank you under superintendent comments I'm going to go ahead hoping that we still have a few people following and watching because their kids were just recognized and do the comments now and I will not have anything at the end I know reopening schools is on everybody's minds we sent a parent survey out this week and appreciate the feedback we are receiving about what our families would like available for their children in the fall this feedback is needed necessary for our next survey which will be deployed to staff yesterday the Center for Disease Control and Prevention provided a guidance document which may many are believing is directive meaning their timeliness we have to do these things actually their suggestions and so in tomorrow's newsletter to our staff we have included the information that that shows that it is to the extent possible is the term they're using whether and how to implement these considerations while adjusting to meet the unique needs and circumstances of the local community implementation should be guided by what is feasible practical acceptable and tailored to the need of each community I will tell you that today in in Tony Thurman's presentation we are going to get further guidance from the state of California Department of Education having to do with reopening schools in California as we move forward with the state budget impacts and reopening of schools there are several areas where advocacy will be needed flexibility with waivers first teaching credentials waivers for our k3 class size reduction pending there is a current cap on independent study which includes remote learning and they're just going to need to be some work on waivers to allow us to have more students within our district have that ability um Plex did when we're not under a governor's executive order for closure flexibility on instructional minutes flexibility on supplemental and concentration buns Pat we'll talk a little bit about that later but as you know that's how the funding comes to us for our unduplicated count and we have to show progress in supporting goals for those particular students and so it is really the only funding left out there that is similar to back in two thousand seventy when we had categorical funding that allows us to have some flexibility and so we're hopeful that they will look at that as well and although the schools are recognized in the class of 2020 with events we will still anticipate an in-person graduation and as we receive guidance about this I will update the board so as you heard Riley say we still have two dates when for granite one for Apple that is posted for June we have two dates in July one for Apple one for granite and high desert premiere is doing virtual because it's a small number of students and if they want to do something as well they have the opportunity to but with mr.
