chairman thank you and I think that's probably the quickest policy updates thank you I believe we do have a report from school modernization committee yeah if you guys if you folks like the grant of speed be very welcome sure did you say me Andrew Suzanne I said Andrew man but what was going order but the two representatives plus myself I was not at the last meeting but I know both of you were okay and do you mind if I take it she's good with that okay I'll start and then if you want to add anything just chime in whenever so back on Monday night June the first we had our school modernization committee meeting via zoom we received a very detailed presentation from the outer district school school tour subcommittee which comprised of Sylvia Nichols from Town Council Matt Bowman Richard Gustin Berg as well as an harrigan for district schools have been visited thus far there were additional schools that they were seeking to visit however due to Coba 19 those have been postponed those school districts were north haven where they visited a renovated as new middle school south windsor which is undergoing a multi ten year for school new construction project Guilford High School which is new vertical construction and then Platte High School in Meriden which is a renovation as new basically what they looked at in each of the schools they interviewed the different staff toured the different support areas cafeterias classroom layouts science labs etc to see what best to bring back to our district as we move forward with school modernization one of the main takeaways was from South Windsor where they met with the superintendent who was very it was a big component in ensuring that the staff the community and the Board of Education are all in on the discussion for review there's photos there's all kinds of information in that those folks did a wonderful job with that for sure additionally discussed Kolia which is going to be our owners rap on the project there was negotiations that was done between then as well as that firm I practically matter $85,000 not to exceed amount for owners project management services I'm not sure if that has been signed yet at the time of the meeting of June 1st had not been signed but it should have been signed this week then 7th I'm not signed yet there were calm we we got their comments back and sent it to our attorney for review so it's in legal okay so the at that around for a little while and then we'll have a long awaited owners rap on board this past Tuesday on the second and RFP went out for a ten year enrollment study the enrollment study is going to be a key component for our strategies for our schools and if we're gonna be districting or moving any of the classrooms around so once that firm is hired and they're looking at a four to six week turnaround to get that back so then they could present that to the school modernization committee after the meeting there was an executive committee which we just discussed some real estate matters which I can't discuss now but that'll be some information that'll be forthcoming to the group once we move forward with that with that and if you have anything you'd like to add I think you did a a great job and in the interest of not prolonging this meeting any longer than we have to I will forego any further comments on this okay thank you anybody else have any questions or comments and regards to school modernization all right thank you thank you Andrew we have no other standing committees to report and I am under six that's like a point of order I didn't realize until a few minutes ago that when we're talking about the consent calendar I bought like a stack down there does list the tuition rates and the board meeting times I believe I inadvertently mentioned the meeting minutes as part of the set calendar so I want to clarify that what we voted for is for a consent calendar is presented we did not vote for the meeting minutes even though I mentioned that in my comments I apologize was thumbing through a few screen so I didn't realize looks you guys somebody were giving me earlier now I get it so I apologize for that in our packets we do have the meeting minutes from the meeting held May 21st is there a motion to approve the minutes from that meeting mr.
chairman I'd like to make a motion thank you is there a second is make the motion move that the chest report of a education approved the minutes of the Board of Education meeting held May 21st 2020 now is there a second Andrew seconds any changes a discussion on a meeting minutes there are none the motion on table is that the cheshire broad education approved the minutes of the board education meeting held May 21st 2020 all those in favor all those against abstain I think he's frozen Oh Andy's frozen yeah here's Angelo you in favor of the motion yes Janice thank you yes mirai's my my words sorry this is correspondence yes sir so we do have a letter that was to all of the board members and number of other people and it was specifically requested that we read it in full as the Board of Ed meetings so the letter is from Christopher Fe and Sam Rosenberg I was shocked and angered to see a post by Cheshire Board of Education president Tony Perry Jeannie and face Cheshire Facebook group sharing views that contradict recommendations from health experts about the corona virus in our current public health crisis Perry Gina copied a statement from rock musician Ted Nugent quotes that Tony shared include I'm not I'm not wearing a mask I'm not staying six feet from you you believe the made-up NIC death numbers and we're not all in this together these statements violate all public health recommendations that have been shared with us including national and local experts like our chess picaud health officials pair genies post was followed by comments that contained additional misinformation we need to listen to experts not share divisive commentary that encourages the spread of false information the post went on to criticize those who are concerned about transmission of the virus and suggested we cover your whole body in tinfoil mocking the very people who elected him to this position this is not the type of leadership the Chester school system needs during this pandemic the families of Cheshire want to know that students will be safe when they return to school students staff and teachers that are compromised want to feel that everything possible has been done to keep them safe they do not want to hear personal device of views and conspiracy theories we need to act upon the science not put virus deniers in positions which could negatively impact Public Health if mr.
Pierre Jeanne truly believes these statements he is woefully inadequate to lead the school system toward reopening as a parent taxpayer and teacher I called for Tony / Jeanne to make a public apology to the members of the community especially if he is to lead any votes about the opening and safety of Cheshire Public Schools in the fall if you cannot do so in a genuine thoughtful way then he should recuse himself from any involvement and then the opening of our schools signed Christopher a fee 204 Peck Blaine and Sam Rosenberg $2.99 ring bearer drive thank you thank you Sam I will be addressing that there my chairpersons update thank you right thank you sorry it's what we can note about that up next is the much-anticipated much waited superintendents report yes I was hoping to keep this quick we have just a quick update on my end and then a few comments through CPS Koba 19 the update on my end I know there's a lot of anticipation about the fall obviously nobody has a crystal ball but the state has put out several possible options for the fall including am/pm shifts for kids to maintain social distancing flip-flopping weeks for students so students half the students go one week have to go the next just a straight virtual classroom there was another one where they suggested kids in elementary school go four days a week in school one day remote and high schoolers go one day a week in school for days remote I just want our families to know that what we're focused on first and foremost is meeting the educational needs of our students to the greatest extent possible and doing it in a way that's safe so of course we'll be following medical guidance from state if we have to adhere to executive orders and things like that but you know one of the things that we've looked at is do we have K through 7 students come every day in person those who can I recognize that some who can't because of medical conditions or have families that have suppressed immune systems or something to that effect may have to engage remotely as well as the and then high schoolers would be remote eighth through through 12 would be remote because that's the only way that we can maintain social distancing we'd have to spread K through 7 through all the bills so nothing there is optimal what can be feasible and how do we best deliver instruction to kids even if students at the high school level have need and have to attend in person then we would try and work on that - I just want parents know we're very sensitive to you know the reality of being a working parent you know I have two guys at home myself that you know we're working with but it's even tougher when they're younger so we are sensitive to that as well as the needs of our students and I'll be sending out more information on that shortly in terms of koban nineteen males Mitchell for lens ax and send an email about it was just a resource about wearing masks and the decrease in covent nineteen transmission transmission associated with physical distance singing match mask wearing it's more of a resource that he sent to us and then finally we have five emails all from Rob Brocato throughout the evening at 11:46 will fell Road so at 8:58 those cheshire have the right not to follow governor Lamont's executive orders I feel keeping kids separate not socializing and especially wearing masks is dangerous and not healthy both physically and mentally then at 9:30 - thank you the minute or two bad great job through this I was told from a friend who's a teacher in another town that Cheshire has done an excellent job and students our students are far ahead without line learning than their district with with is another very good school district usually ranked slightly higher than Cheshire my guess is not anymore that's just my editorial pardon me then at 9:36 thank you for passing this with this crisis 43,000 that is reasonable and could be far worse then at 10:01 are these warm lights not blue that are bad for eyes and brains and then the last one is at 10:10 can we purchased a stereo system for bathrooms overnight save a ton so that's all I have sir thank you thank you uh its class we have a dedicated fan it's Bhagat one of our viewers of this evening thank you dr.
Solan we have no old business on their new business just remember that the we move item 10a up earlier to begin the meeting where we welcome miss dessert on to the treasure school system I do have a chair update and I try keep it as short as possible and I tell you it is it is hard for me and I thought this one of my board members and folks you know I'm sorry about making light of anything and I want to give a brief history I've posted about this you know lifted up a folks to see for a while apologize some folks that you know took it the wrong way but last week I think it was Wednesday or Thursday I was debating about the Kovac situation quite frankly the same the folks like myself that believe it is very much real that's kind of a joke not to believe that's the case so you know have a little fun some of the folks that has extreme views I took a quote from mr.
Nugent and I gotta tell you trying to use the words Ted Nugent and Board of Ed in the same sentence I kind of flipped learning mouth a little bit so it's just again it was a post topical sarcastic it was meant to use the words from mr. Nugent about fear and not so much it's extreme and who knows in that job as if stream used on the particular situation I'm sorry I know that's debatable but yes was I feel when folks use the word fear not so much of fear the virus or fear of its effect so fair gonna work but fear died when people like myself and others and talk about the situation it constantly devolves into the name-calling the rhetoric the the shaming the embarrassment of folks on one side of the other trying to use fear and a way to make us fearful talking about it so I wonder look fun with the naysayers I was not having fun with the folks on the receiving end of that I guess Saturday I'm actually one of those folks I don't work tinfoil hats the post was mocked it was made in jest that was made clear the discussion ensued and went back and forth where I was struggling with it again this wasn't cheshire unplugged not anyplace else I couldn't figure out why a few folks try and tie this to the board of that as nothing with the Board of Ed has zero to do with my beliefs or the code virus situation not that I'm arrogant I figure folks probably know who I am know how much I've been defending the situation how I was impacting our board so I was really puzzled why few folks thought this is how I feel about the board of that absolutely not I have no intention whatsoever to put our students in harm's way that's I just it doesn't make any sense to me and for a few days I was trying to figure out you know what was driving this you know and I gotta tell you I thought if my name for a while was you don't get it and it wasn't so much about the poster Ted Nugent you know weed again I'm not gonna defend that that has that nose a nut job sorry but the only thing I agree with them is maybes amadora guitar player but that's about it decades ago maybe so what clue tell quite frankly I got an email and a phone call and one of the emails that came across kind of hit it home from him and I have to acknowledge this now before I say this you might want to buckle your seatbelts because it's my son I actually agree with Sam Rosenberg and Chris a fee I think they hit the point were dead on the email is not personal it was not political it wasn't brought people up but they pretty much confirmed what I heard from one other parent which is you know those words that they pulled out about the ten point tinfoil hats and it's not being real you know I know folks actually are offended by that and even though it's not my quote and you know I made the post and gesture to start a conversation I can't you know it stands my heart that anybody would think me of all people on this board in any of us that matter would not put the student safety in the best interest and that's just this wrong they have someone question it that's what I really think I don't take it personally I didn't take it in anger or embarrassment but I tell you my heart sank I don't want anybody believing that I would ever ever put our students safety in jeopardy it's it's just not true Dennis board for a long time all my votes my record speaks for itself it's there but I agree with Sam and Chris you know there are folks that are receiving out of that and I can am one of those folks and I've knowledge that and I do apologize to apologize if that made you feel as if you were being targeted they meant certainly did not so again I have a hard time doing this right the first time in my career here where you know I've gotten this kind of feedback shaming the Inc all the stuff that happens to us in social media as we train that it was right well sorry defending or right to believe code is really safe about the reopening you know a person passing with it you know I'd say my emotions are at all-time especially as what's happenin spaz tweak well I don't know what else to say in the matter that is not who I feel well I think the the post topic those you know pretty much define that I guess in some ways I'm thankful that you know people kind of recognize me as a boy stand the one parent actually someone have as community called me up we talked about it and no no I am you know they get it you know what was coming from but the one thing they made clear to me that and rest on the same words that Kristin Sam wrote in the email was you know tell me it's uh yeah like you know in this day and age everybody senses a heightened level mine are but you get a number and the words were you know your voice matters and whether you realize it or not you are a big voice for education community and so folks that play don't know you and quite frankly I don't know why they being just unplug that's what the for on its own but nonetheless you know they see all these great things you're doing and post on the yeah Board of admin and intervention in there and they see that you know you know it's a sarcastic discussion topic they're kind of wondering hey you know was he really believe this and the answer is no the other thing I want to say is that I appreciate folks think I have some superpower in this board of education I don't and I'll tend to mine a little bit gonna remember it's it's seven people on the Board of Ed that make decisions none of us and I all six other people on this Board of Ed would never allow me or any one of us to bring extreme views to the table one way or another or try to influence a decision well I'm not leaning the Board of Ed down the path of making a bad is it's not up to me it's probably up to the board it's up to the administration as well so rest assured you're in good hands with the whether you believe me or not in this topic I respect your decision but the the seven of us work together for your best interest I have no sway over that I try to aim for the consensus actually people bring out their points but I have never and I never will censor someone and is bored from doing what's right but I will certainly step in if it's I feel it's wrong and we've done that before so I am deeply sorry that we have a few folks out there that would believe I would ever and it's my heart is dropped quite a bit well as one or 100 folks complaining you know I mean about a long time ago that would never turn my back on anyone complaining and whether it's one student it doesn't matter I'll listen to everything so again I apologize Sam and Chris in particular and the others have contacted me I think your point is and I would hope that you sort of know me watching these meetings and I know you do I know you definitely let me know if there's something in doubt I hope you know that's that's not me I would never do that for school and I would never tap on that on that pass oh my indeed Lisa like what I do want to acknowledge that that was all over an email and it made a lot of sense the last thing I want to say kind of bothers me a lot is that you know in this day and age especially the things that happen every day however often wonder if you wake up in the morning if today is the day Humana gives up themselves there's so much going on that I'm wondering you know what's what thing is gonna happen what major advancement changes corsola number of things and I keep realizing that done that's probably not going to happen it's going to take each one of us our kids our generation to a Islamic world and move things forward but one of the things that bothers me as well on this is you know I extinct communications on this matter not the parent ones that we're discussing let the folks that call me but you know when I read things that say we finally got him now's the time I'm not mad I'm not angry but that hurts you know it's there's always a small flow of ass recognition by no means I'm not taking away from the pair complains that is the open hard way heart rate heart rate finding but you know I can never do that to somebody that can ever take advantage of the situation and quite frankly this does not warrant that that's not in my heart what's in my heart is love so two parents out there very sorry that you're questioning my integrity it was a few of you but I know your tension was not to hurt me but may I tell you it stains and I heard you thank you but I'm gonna continue doing my role and you know a pre-show is for a man getting over this but I don't feel this is something that you know I need to step away from and continue stare around the board the best I can with my fellow board members and you know next time around if those feelings never live up this expectation is generally not not vote and I understand that I am deeply sorry for those that can't have to me that what girls I haven't if you believe that that post was meant for you there wasn't it sarcastic way defending our position so I apologize and I thank the board for giving it time to talk about this slow it's alright to say in a matter and as always I am and always available on the phone or whatever to talk more folks not talk about it so thank you what Maksym position here one last thing so something that stuck out to me and all this was probably something that faith bought a couple weeks ago and we briefly mentioned but one of the parents I spoke to mention that you know part of the angst just in general you know itself is that you know the amount of information that's gonna come out from the border it's been it's been we can communicate it as well as from the administration what we've been hearing time again appearances about the song I mentioned that earlier there's a lot of variables there and so I think one of the things that could help with the reopening and we'll bring this up at a future board meeting hopefully is you know the possibility of creating some kind of board task force there's something where well these parents can give their their thoughts on the reopening share their concerns and ideas faith has been doing some legwork she I think she mentioned Co Queens ago I know some of us what up and it's really not for trying to have yet another committee I know just involve a lot of regional but we're closer to use own some guidelines I think is important to find some way and for the board I'm not nothing this time Jeffery administration but maybe the board can lead something we used to have open forums before Co but unfortunately you can't do that but the hope of a in the month we can talk about a little bit see if there's something there very much like to get our parents heard not that they're not but you know there's maybe a lot of questions on the opening and I think just having their their voice and hearing them to go a long way so those I want to say in that upcoming innings and events and for for folks watching while nearing the end of month and usually we in the school year on June 30th then we whoa I can tell you that the board was really busy through the summer unfortunately lost administration and some staff but I just can't worry for a number of things but these meanings are what schedules so far there may be more in July in August I think Chris did it will be as those are made available I get that out to you so upcoming meetings Monday June 8th 7 p.m.
there's a creek of community meeting will be held to meet on Wednesday June 10th June 17th and June 24th it's done again we have Personnel Committee meeting of the whole executive session and Tuesday June 30th 7:30 we hope board a fiscal meaning it'll be virtual meaning June 8th is my 50th birthday and that's when a quick effect hand if you told me 20 years ago I'd be apologizing about Ted Nugent pose 150th birthday and you're crazy but yeah here we are you think it could happen that being said I don't have any other updates we are going to adjourn through executive session we just something discussed plans related to union negotiations and the upcoming still attendance evaluation so we'll never be kind enough to make a motion to adjourn is that good session I move that we go into executive session with no action to follow including both Geoff Solon and mr.
[Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] it is my honor to introduce Olivier Levasseur to sing the national anthem [Music] [Applause] Oh star-spangled [Music] hurry [Music] greetings Dartmouth high school community members and class of 2020 it is my pleasure and great privilege to address you as part of the Dartmouth high school class of 2020 commencement ceremony each year all across America young people like yourself gather to share in this important milestone high school graduation yeah here we are June of 2020 and what in ordinary times would be a joyous occasion inside of a packed Karlin Lynch activity center has become in these uncertain times and exercise and persistence where as a class you have once again demonstrated the power and triumph of can do over can't do you see it is in unordinary times that extraordinary people reveal themselves class of 2020 you are a collection of extraordinary human beings you have the determination and mindset required for success even in the uncertain world into which you are graduating class of 2020 this year has been a testament to your collective poise and determination to be successful it has shown up repeatedly in many different places it was present in the way our fall student athletes and musicians handled the dreaded Triple E virus you didn't whine or complain despite not being able to have any evening events you went out you qualified for state tournament after state tournament our volleyball team had a perfect 20 in O regular season and our girls soccer team made a deep run in the tournament losing a very close game in the Golden Goal over time our marching band and color God went out and earned a fourth consecutive national championship in fact the only moment this fall that made me even a bit nervous was when the senior girls nearly lost the powerpuff game on Black Friday due to a questionable holding call on the final play of the game lesson has been learned I will never again make that mistake because I will never again officiate another Powerpuff game here at Dartmouth high school class of 2020 you've retired me the winter was equally successful at Dartmouth high school with a record number of students preparing for AP exams attending Saturday sessions and sitting for mock exams in preparation let eclis all of our winter teams qualified for postseason play many of our winter track athletes posted personal bests the boys and girls basketball teams each had the best season in recent memory and who could forget a hockey team and the memorable run that they made in the tournament all the way to the south sectional final including a 4 to 0 shutout of our rival Bishop Stang this winter a theater program also delighted the community with an exceptional holiday performance of a double feature featuring a Charlie Brown's Christmas as well as a Christmas Carol our indoor percussion and color guard were also off to a roaring start in their season taking several first place finishes in competitions held before the date that would stop our year in its tracks Friday March 13th 2020 yeah even then in the myths of the Cova 19 global pandemic when Dartmouth's finest was performed in front of a limited crowd of family only the class of 2020 made the most of it class of 2020 held in the parking lot of doing session of the show demonstrating once again the perseverance and positivity that have become your classes defining characteristics after that performance we waited we waited hopefully for a spring athletic and concert season that would never come we waited to resume classes that would remain remote we waited with hope that this very ceremony would be what each of you deserved a traditional ceremony held in the packed Carl and Lynch activity center in a traditional graduation we waited and continued to wait for a return to normalcy class of 2020 we know that too much was taken from you we know that you have paid too steep a price to learn the universal truth that life is a gift and that living in and enjoying the moment should not be taken for granted because none of us know when that moment might be up class of 2020 we know that this is not the ending you had hoped for but in every crisis there is opportunity class of 2020 you have waited long enough no more waiting this is your moment go out there armed with the lessons you've learned at Dartmouth high school and remake the world in your image not in a return to a past normal but forward to a new normal a new normal that is defined by the very characteristics that have led you to this point a new normal where we follow your lead and embrace your can-do spirit class of 2020 remember success is a mindset you can do it you have done it congratulations at this time it is my honor to introduce class of 2020 president Braley meadow hello everyone and thank you for tuning into our graduation ceremony on behalf of the class of 2020 I would like to thank all the teachers and faculty at DHS as well as all the family and friends who have shown their support for our class the class of 2020 will never be forgotten I believe this is because we are the class that endured three different schedules throughout our four years wait no that's not why it's because many changes made to long-standing Dartmouth traditions wait sorry that's not it either it's definitely that we are graduating during a pandemic and had the end of our senior year taken from us either that or because we are the best looking class regardless of the reason we are a class that will always be remembered and it's not just because of the adversity we faced but also because of the connections we have made the teachers at DHS are some of the most amazing people that I have ever met sophomore year is when I discovered my love for history and my passion only grew as the years passed I believe my initial interest was sparked by one person and that person is mr.
Jeffery Reed he was such an excellent teacher and an even better person and I always look forward to his class and I clearly struck gold that year because right after I went to mr. Reid's class I went right to the next room over to learn about government for mrs. Caitlyn McCarran Dooley I left her class just as much as mr. Reed's and because of those two people are now double majoring in history and government they were my initial inspirations and I would just like to thank them both from the bottom of my heart I'd also like to confess that at the end of that school year I gave both mr. Reid and this is McCarran a little sign that said best teacher ever but I didn't tell them that I gave it to both of them it was great to see their reactions because they were flattered but also decided to hide it from the other because they thought that I had to chose to phase a favor of the two I'm not sure that if they still don't know that I gave them the same sign but mr.
Reid and mrs. McCarran if you're watching this I'll never pick a favorite because you're both the best I have to mention one more teacher that helped me find my passion in high school and that teacher is mr. Brian Hale camp I had mr. Hill camp the year after I had mr. eid and mrs. macaron so the bar was raised extremely high I'm not gonna lie I wasn't all that impressed at first but over time I realized that some of his corny dad jokes are actually funny if you don't think about them too much mr. Hill camp taught me to challenge myself in the world around me to learn a deeper understanding of things and to never stop asking questions these three individuals steered me toward my future majors and I'm so grateful but I'm also grateful for every single teacher I've ever had I can't name them all but you know who you are you were all amazing and I'm so glad to have learned from you all of you and thank you to mrs.
Chamberlain and mrs. Kelly for being the best class advisors these past four years we couldn't have done it without you I'm grateful for the support for my friends throughout high school and of course my family my family is my rock and I wouldn't be here today without them I'm also grateful to my classmates we have had different backgrounds and different futures awaiting us but we all experience DHS together we are about to move on to our next adventures but I hope that you will always remember your time here with your classmates regardless of who you are or what you did during your time here you are part of this class you can say that you are a part of a class had such a rough time and couldn't catch a break but you could also think of yourself as a part of the class that faced such adversity and still managed to graduate a lot was thrown at us but we got through it didn't we we are a resilient Bunch the real world will get tough but we have had some good training we have become adaptable we have become experienced I encourage you to all look at the bright side of the situation we have had obstacles in our way but we made it through and now we can move on you did it class of 2020 we did it I'm proud of all of you high school isn't an easy thing I know because I just went through four years of it and it was hard but I hope you are also proud of yourselves because I'm proud of you congratulations class of 2020 truly congratulate since at this time it's my pleasure to introduce the valedictorian for the class of 2020 Victor Gonzalez class of 2020 oh what a pleasure it is to speak in front of the most resilient group of kids I've ever seen well not exactly in front of all of you but it was the best that we could have all done but you know what that's okay I know it sucks but we made history not with any ultimate everlasting senior prank but with the strength towards a recent series of events that none of us could have ever predicted we simply changed history in a way that hasn't been seen within the last hundred of years I know that not only the seniors have been affected by the corona virus within our school but it seems like we were cheated out the most in a way that has high schools across the world upset in a way that had former President and First Lady Michelle and Barack Obama accompanied by a dozen of celebrities addressing our sorrows on a stream for millions to watch in a way that had the names of graduating seniors displayed on famous screens within New York's famous Times Square and lastly when's the last time that anyone can recall a virtual graduation in all of Dartmouth High's history our clay our class made history on top of everything that we've accomplished within our four years here not only do i commemorate us for the twelve years of blood sweat and tears that we have endured but i commemorate you for the last rank or the last push of strength as we had to say goodbye to the events we we looked up to for our entire lives it's okay to feel upset for the current situation we have rightfully earned the respect to do so but if we stay here mourning forever it is impossible to move forward class of 2020 hold your heads up high it is okay to feel upset but push into the future that awaits every single one of us I can assure you that there will be many more good memories to come to come even though this graduation wasn't the way that any of any of us could have ever expected who says it can't be that special and happy moment that we have anticipated for years make the best of it everyone who has worked hard to put this together has tried extremely hard to make this happen enjoy every second of it we truly deserve it now as our class diverges among our own individual pathways whether they include continuing our education diving into the workforce or serving our military I'd like to end on my own piece of advice for the future follow what your heart truly desires don't ever settle for less than what you actually are in an imperfect world seems there's always something to bring you down to stop you from reaching your full potential or to stop you from being the most happy human being on this planet there is no one more important to your life than yourself doesn't matter who thinks can bring you down or what hopeless situation you think you can't get yourself out of because when you think there is no way out of an ever-expanding dark tunnel I promise you there will always be an end an end full of light and happiness and everything that you could possibly see yourself doing you have to push yourself to get there take your first steps doesn't matter where you come from your background and other fluencies should never determine whether you have the full capacity to succeed if you think you haven't done enough I promise you it will come as long as you motivate yourself to start and if you think you're on top of the world you won't always be because life will always have a clever way to show you otherwise but the best you can do is embrace the future even as we depart Dartmouth high as graduates realize that we continue to learn for the rest of our lives keep an open mind to what's ahead it won't be high school that has given us the key of life nor will it be college and university won't be the work force or military and I guess we'll never really know when we find our individual key but the best we can do is follow what makes us most happy and passionate the little things that bring most excitement into our lives you have full control of what you want for your entire life anyone thinks otherwise they are wrong don't settle for anything but your wildest dreams don't let anything bring you down because you are the best person for yourself and you will forever be for the rest of your lives doesn't matter who you are or where you come from but it is how willing you are to push yourself and to embrace the future to succeed the world is full of problems that need all different kinds of people every creed color background and skillset to solve as we leave here today I challenge the class of 2020 to truly love themselves and embrace the future changing the world in the most unique and personal personal way as possible farewell thank you I love you and I'll miss you all it's my pleasure to introduce the class of 2020 treasurer Hannah Bruce hello class of 2020 parents family and friends I am Hanna Bruce the class treasurer this year working with my fellow class officers was one that made our bonds so unbelievably close and truly unbreakable I am excited to introduce our faculty speaker who will share his thoughts with the class of 2020 this year's faculty speaker is a very special teacher to me when I was a junior he was the teacher who noticed when I wasn't my true bubbly self in class he looks out for every single one of his students no matter what in class he strives to make every single lesson interesting especially to the people who like me are not crazy about history ever since he decided to become a teacher teaching at Dartmouth High School has been his ultimate goal prior to joining Dartmouth high school he taught for several years at Moore in Middle School in Fall River he obtained his undergraduate and master's degree at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and has been teaching for six years let's all give a very warm welcome to the one and only mr.
Howell camp congratulations class of 2020 and thank you for the honor of being your faculty speaker I'm not gonna lie I was a little surprised to hear I was chosen for graduation speaker first I just kept thinking to myself seriously you want to hear me talk even more than I already do and secondly I was like oh no they're gonna make me be serious I promised everyone I'd be short here so I'm just gonna get right to it you guys are incredible without a doubt you are all the reason I love coming to work every day getting to know you all and watching you grow and develop as people has been the most rewarding part of my job I can't thank you all enough for the memories and experiences I've gained here at Dartmouth high school with that said I want to take a minute to address the elephant in the room this kovat 19 pandemic has been a challenge for all of us seniors especially there are so many things we look forward to things we take for granted I'm truly sorry for the experiences you've missed out on and the difference between your expectations of senior year and the reality that we're all actually living through but if you know me you know I like to focus on the positive so here goes this year is given us the opportunity to see things from a unique perspective I've spoken with countless students that have all expressed how much they miss school imagine that students actually wanting to come back to school this ordeal has shown us how much we take for granted all the mundane and mindless things we do each day once they're taken away we start to recognize their importance the things we complain about become the things we miss the most and while things may be different for your senior year they've also given us the opportunity to see what's truly important it's you all of you we don't miss the classroom or the work or waking up every day to get to school at 7:30 in the morning we miss the people we miss each other it's amazing to see how many people underestimate the influence that they have on other people's lives we have all experienced it at one point walking through the hallway we see that one person maybe we don't even say hi but it matters to us it has an impact on us we don't usually talk about it or even acknowledge it to ourselves but there are countless people in our lives that we look forward to seeing hearing or just being around now remember that you are those as that are that person in someone's life you are that person that someone looks forward to you were the person that makes someone day with only your presence remember that and realize how important all of you actually are all right sappy stuff aside I guess I'm supposed to talk about like futures and careers and all that kind of stuff you're all going off to find your own path and the pressures of that can be pretty overwhelming luckily all of you at 17 or 18 years old have it all figured out already you already know exactly what you want to do alright maybe not and unfortunately I can't really tell you what you should or shouldn't do but I can try to help you when your journey first I'd like to pull art Williams with one of my favorite quotes about mindset all you can do is all you can do but all you can do is enough remember this as you move on into new adventures do what you can try hard and recognize that that is enough we can't control the things we can't control but we can put a focus on the things we can control when we're faced with a challenge remember to put your energy and thoughts into what you can have an impact on didn't get into your top school didn't get the job you applied for what's gonna be more effective dwelling on the rejection you can't control or look into the future to see what the other opportunities actually are don't let the things you can't change hold power over your life take charge and regain the power of your own life by focusing on what you can change and what you can achieve and with that you will all go far I want to conclude with an idea with an idea that has improved my life dramatically and that is to simply find something that you love find the root of your passion and focus on living your life around it for me being a teacher is much more than the academics or the subject matter the content I teach is nothing compared to the part of my job that truly motivates me you all of you the students are what make me love my job once I realized that once I found what motivates and drives me I no longer had a job I had a passion find your passion find what gets you excited what gets you fired up and proud find that latch on to it and do what it takes to make that a part of your life again you are all absolutely incredible I'm so proud of each and every one of you I wish you all the best of luck moving forward and tremendous success and all of your goals and finally for one last time do something absolutely amazing thank you again in congratulations class of 2020 at this time it's my pleasure to introduce Superintendent of Schools dr.
Bonnie Gifford to address the class of 2020 mr. Tebow Dartmouth High School faculty and staff family and friends school committee special guests and of course the class of 2020 it is my privilege to address our graduates today and affirm their completion of their K through 12 education graduation is a significant event in the life of a district it represents the dedication and hard work of many including staff and faculty parents school board town government boards and community at large all have supported our students through their formal education and although we cannot celebrate in person we celebrate nonetheless with pride graduates obviously none of us envisioned the school year would end this way nor would we ever imagined the cancelling of events such as all of our athletics our plays our field trips pop concerts and proms and of course we certainly never imagined a virtual graduation but here we are believe me when I tell you that we share your sadness during the last few months as we planned for and implemented remote learning and search for ways to keep you connected to school we also thought a lot about how to make the end-of-the-year special and make sure that it contained elements of joy and celebration although not ideal we offer today's ceremony and the senior parade in recognition of your achievement and in support of your families and teachers who have committed to making your day special many 2020 graduation speeches across the country will mention adversity and challenges noting that no life is without hardship we are also reminded that life is rich with joy and that simple pleasures like Friday night games pep rallies having lunch with a friend barbecues and birthday parties and yes proms and graduations should never be taken for granted but now you are ready to step into a new chapter in your life as you do I ask that you consider this true story of a carpenter's life as told by let's talk podcast Chris milah miler was an elderly carpenter who was ready to retire he told his employer of his plans to leave the house building business to enjoy life his employer was sorry to see his good worker go and asked if he could build one more house as a special favor Chris agreed and began to work on the last project of his life knowing that he would soon retire and that this was his last project he did not build the house to the best of his ability he did not use quality cement or wood did not install solid doors or a beautiful swimming pool and did not add outstanding finishing touches or furniture when finished the employer called a meeting with the carpenter he gave him the keys to the house and said this is my gift to you for your commendable service for over 15 years the carpenter was shocked thinking if he had only known he would have put forward his best effort so it is with life we build our lives a day at a time often putting less than our best into the building of it then with a shock we realize we have to live in the house we've built you are the carpenter of your life every day you add a board drive a nail and erect a wall it has been said life is a do-it-yourself project your attitude and the choices you make today help build the house you live in tomorrow build wisely face the good and the bad with courage and strength and most importantly live a life full of kindness class of 2020 congratulations I wish you health happiness and much success and now mr.
Tebow chairman Oliver School Committee parents families and Dartmouth public school staff by the authority vested in me as the superintendent of the Dartmouth public school district I certify that these candidates for graduation have fully satisfied the requirements prescribed by the Massachusetts Department of Education the Dartmouth School Committee and the Dartmouth high school faculty congratulations it is my pleasure to introduce the chairman of the Dartmouth School Committee mr.
Christopher Oliver to present the diplomas to the class of 2020 good afternoon members of the Dartmouth high school class of 2020 parents faculty and those of you simply viewing this history is being made today in a year unlike no other my name is Christopher Oliver chairperson of the Dartmouth School Committee I cannot help but think about what we have all gone through since our schools shut their doors on Friday March 13th while you have all missed out on your last two and a half months of your senior year in school I believe you have gained much more in confidence in resilience we have all become accustomed to a new norm whether that is attending a zoom for class socially distancing with friends in your back yard waiting in line to go grocery shopping or simply spending time with your family we will all come out on the other side of this pandemic with a greater appreciation for each other I wish you much success no matter which road you will be taking in the fall whether that is entering the workforce starting your college journey or entering the military I'm confident the education you have received at Dartmouth high school will prove valuable on behalf of the entire Christina Zeta at this time it's my pleasure to introduce the class of 2020 secretary sabrina pyres class of 2020 fellow classmates I know this pandemic was the last thing you imagined would be happening coming into our senior year I know we thought we would have our last months of classes and school together I know we thought we would get all dressed up to go to prom I know we thought we'd be celebrating our last day running through the halls of Dartmouth high but most of all I know we thought we would have all been together right now while all that may be true the class of 2020 is making history we are making history we proved our resilience after every unexpected turn the world throws our way we have ceased to give up and adds tremendous growth to our character our persistence and acceptance of this new world is simply making us better equipped for the future we are the next generation and I have no doubt every single one of us will change the world we will forever cherish the memories we made and we will look forward to the future events when the time is right but now it is time to acknowledge our hard work having a virtual graduation doesn't diminish our accomplishments even though a traditional ceremony would be nice it is not what is important four years of hard work and dedication that each one of the 259 students in our class persevered through is what we should focus on despite everything we made it so class of 2020 I would say rise but please move your tassels from right to left because it is time to start our new journey [Music] you

good evening everyone the time is now seven o'clock we will begin the Brookfield High School's senior scholarship awards the socially distant Persian I'm joined here tonight believe it or not by mrs. Shady you won't hear but she's sitting on the audience making sure all technical difficulties are taken care of and I'm glad to have her here with me in the auditorium to celebrate our students tonight so a bit about how the program is going to run what we're going to do is I will go through show some traditional pieces that we normally would have including like a program which we don't have tonight but normal we have students do some artwork I'll show you some of that we'll get right into Department Awards where you'll hear from the team leaders and as well as the department heads in their respective departments reading names of students for individual courses that want awards as well as Department scholars and then we'll get into the actual meat of the evening which is the awarding of scholarships and other awards that's where the money starts coming in so let me introduce myself I am mark Belinda the proud principal of Brookfield High School under way I do ask that you give us a little bit of leeway normally when it comes to pronouncing names we have a little more time and opportunity to check in with students to make sure we pronounce their names the correct way sometimes you go the better part of four years thinking it's a certain way and turns out it's not so we will do our best to do those tonight and we'll get right to the awards so first let's start with some artwork I want to recognize one of our senior students this is Kayla Abreu she's in an art to class and this would have been the cover of the program if you were here tonight with us so thank you Kayla for taking care of that in addition we have more art from Fernanda Kaneshiro and Mikaela Preston you see the Bobcat senior Awards a couple different designs we usually have a couple different students designed some different options and so that's what you would have seen had you been here tonight as I shared before we're going to start with the department and scholar Awards so we'll begin with mr.
