so there's no there's only benefit for us in signing the three-year contract at each juncture we have the right to exit that's brad's negotiated that into the contract for us whether so two years for that just basically really eliminated my decision right at the end of the day whatever you know process that we have i think at this point in time again i know uh kathy is in a different mindset but again listening to james if he didn't have something here our teachers are going to be panicking and then we're not in a normal school setting we're in a colbit setting where you know it's going to be even harder and i think this is just my opinion i think as a board we can give direction to sign the three-year contract because of the dollars and cents and give direction that we either terminate in year one and then maybe the math task force comes together and works something out if from there if you want to keep it for the second year if it works with the map task force especially the teachers giving input if the math task force would give the advice and say like you know what we can work with carnegie and it looks like it's everything is working and then if we want to extend two years we still still save money i think at this point with every cent that we got to make sure that we're saving for taxpayers i would i would recommend that we go the three-year route with the direction that we terminate either one year uh with the evaluation of the math task force and come back to the board come back to the board before the one year ends with the recommendation from the math task force on how it's going so that we could evaluate and give direction again okay can i ask for this okay when is the termination time in other words i'd like your idea al okay because it would save some money okay so we need to know what the termination date is beforehand that has to be clear and then we also when we you know let's say vote this voted with just the way you stated we'll do it a three year with determination to be done you know after one year so to answer your question conspiracy uh we'd have to terminate the contract by april uh if we were to go with the new adoption we'd probably start the process well before april anyways uh we go through the cycle they have to bring it forward to board anyways as we adopt the new cycle so april would be it should be plenty of time for us to terminate and end this contract if we had to do so okay thank you it was a good clarification that was good clarification okay any other questions or comments and we're going to move on thank you everyone excellent robust conversation so item 8.1 resolutions resolution number two zero to zero slash two one dash b o t dash zero one order of biennial trustee election and specific specs i can't say this word specifications election order second okay move to second in any comments okay hearing none uh mr o'neal aye mr jabbar aye ms piercy aye mrs smith aye and myself i 8.2 resolution number 2020 slash 21-e-01 annual certification of course-based independent study for 2020-21 action item [Laughter] was there a report on this from staff nope okay questions or comments from the board okay hearing none mr o'neal hi mr jabbar hi miss piercy aye miss fifth did you say smith yes i did i thought i thought i heard you say piercy a second time i'm just worn out uh i thank you educational services 8.3 contract agreement carnegie learning so motion so moved i guess we need to have a motion yeah i want to clarify the motion so the motion that uh and anna if you would i don't know if you would uh clarify the motion or do you want me to clarify the motion uh no go ahead i'll let you clarify now because you've spoken before you know and i didn't think about clarifying that right go ahead yeah so the clarification for me is we approve the three-year contract with the understanding that we look at a one-year termination but bring make sure that we get the math task force to work closely if they decide and i know it's a long uh motion if they decide that after getting input from teachers that they could go for a second year then keep it if they decide that we want to terminate the first year then we terminate after the one year so that's my motion i don't know if that enough clarification carl that sounds pretty good yes that that's a good motion we could put it in his speech so uh moved and seconded we've spent a lot of time on this and i really appreciate staff and i really appreciate teachers input across the district these things are extremely important and we always want to hear from you so with that mr o'neal hi mr jabbar hi miss piercy i guess so that's not a yay or nay yay okay well i'm going to hang with mrs piercy and i'm saying that grudgingly all right and uh i vote i as well so i have a i have a question and it goes back to 7.1 a real simple question which we didn't touch on what happens to teachers that need substitutes when we have a virtual or we're in the classroom now what are we going to do for substitute teachers mr o'neal if if it's if it's a in-person day um there'll still be substitutes required um for students because we cannot they have to have a certificated person with them so i'll substitutes will still be required if a teacher is not present in the classroom in a in in a synchronous situation um we uh you know the teacher has provided the curriculum for the entire week and so the teacher probably will not call a substitute in that situation in that scenario thank you manuel yeah and also i mean because since we are now in a computer society and you can take it with you if a teacher has to be let's say gone somewhere on the day they're supposed to be teaching they take it with them they it can be done so i i don't see any need for any subs other than in person days we're going to save on sub fees okay thank you thank you mr o'neal so with that may get a motion to adjourn i thought this was going to be a short meeting mr uh o'neill hi mr jabbar aye ms piercy aye ms smith hi and i vote i thank you everyone have a great rest of the day okay so when's our next meeting guys all right and uh in the meantime uh we just really want to wish um the jabar family um happy congratulations on their newborn new girl uh we're we're so happy for you thank you all right what'd you name

Gifford sure Thank You mr. Oliver so since receiving the commissioners latest guidance initial return to school what we've done so far with that is meet as a central office team a few times to kind of wrap our heads around that guidance it's pretty complex it is initial we do expect more guidance to be coming probably every week on various topics which I'll mention as I go through this on but today what we did we crafted a plan of action involving the district leadership team all of the building base folks as a first step so we asked them to take a look at our parent and staff survey which went out today after receiving feedback from the rest of the folks on do miss any questions what some of the important information that we need to gather from people to help guide our decision-making specifically about people thinking about returning to school if there's they would feel comfortable returning their students to school riding the bus those kinds of things knowing that as we craft our plans the subject to change depending upon medical advice that comes down the pike as we get closer to school return so we did send that survey out today we put a Friday date this Friday that we will close it because we want to get started our building teens are then going to examine various models of well I should back up a little bit so the Commissioner has asked the districts to craft three models of Education one full return to school but still using the guidance all the health and safety requirements that pretty much really inhibit what we're we're able to do and I'll speak a little bit about that in a second the second model would be a hybrid model and there are very various examples of that that's what we're asking our building based folks to examine research now and come up with ideas of what might a hybrid model look like in their level the middle school level the high school level and we've asked the elementary folks to work as a team and then finally a full remote learning plan which would be similar to what we have in place now however we would we would also want to make that rope more robust if we had to stay remote for some time with grading assessments etc so we'll be having more conversation about that with that the commissioners guidance established lots of guidance around spacing in classrooms keeping death straight not using the cafeteria for foodservice they didn't talk about the said we would not have to do entry point screening or temperature checks but things like if the nurse the nurse's station being separate a separate station with the nurses many many requirements that will be involved so you can say full full return to school but with the requirements involved that's pretty much looking impossible right now the Commissioner wants that information from us be calling it they're going in a pressure test which mr.

harness for pushing to make today happen shoutout to miss Rocha and miss Kenny Stein and also MS Rice and we'll D it it has been chaotic for all of us to get to this moment but now we are finally here face to face and caps and gowns and masks during the past few months we have experienced life as never before although our senior year ended differently than we expected we still have so much more to be remembered by who knows maybe we'll be the last class that was all allowed to cram into the Bear Den or the last to take a yearbook photo group tightly together on the football stadium bleachers or the last to squish three to a seat on a school bus for a field trip we were the first class to have one virtual graduation and then for live and that teaches us to have hope we are also the first class in over 25 years to graduate on this field and while it's true that we have lost so much spring sports our spring drama production decision day senior variety show senior send-off senior assassin our prom yearbook signings goodbyes in the halls of EB HS and the expected graduation together in the arena closure as it should be we do not have to let the final few months at EB HS define our four years filled with lasting memories we can look back and laugh about rushing to get a seat on the Churchill activity bus the excitement over semi in the cafeteria and stressing about sophomore orientation we should not focus our energy on what we have lost but rather recognize what we have gained CS Lewis said hardships often prepare ordinary people for extraordinary destiny and I know that this is true for us we should view this time home from school as an opportunity that we had to learn in a non-traditional way we learned that getting up before the Sun and driving to school in the dark is something we could actually miss we learned that having to wear IDs above the waist at all times is not the worst thing we learned how social media and the Internet can keep us connected yet at the same time we also learned the value of physically being near one another we learned that we can make all the plans we want we can buy dresses and create promposals and we can plan graduation parties but life still sometimes gets in the way we also learned a lot about ourselves we learned how to manage our time we learned who and what is important to us and we learn not to take the little things for granted this time staying home was also a freedom it was a freedom to think of freedom to create a freedom to hope and freedom to plan and most recently became a freedom to recognize inequality around us and for each of us to decide how we want to make change and as we entered this new phase of our lives we are free to be anything we want to be all right school graduation our high school graduation is not a finish line but a starting line graduating mercis started to each of our futures we will be mothers and fathers business professionals first responders educators members of the Armed Forces engineers lawyers and artists we will be compassionate honest loving and resilient we will be whoever we want to be but today we are the East Brunswick high school class of 2020 and for that we should be proud [Applause] I wish success and Happiness for all of us as we begin the next chapter of our lives congratulations everyone we will now hear from the valedictorian of the class of 2020 Lucy Zhao good morning everyone I hope you are all well during these challenging times I know none of us were expecting such a graduation but we are so thankful to the administration for putting something this special together for us so without further ado here's a little bit of my heart that I would like to share with you today in 42 minutes you can learn about the chemical equation describing the dissociation of carbonic acid why Genghis Khan was one of the most notorious leaders in history or the specific wording used in a midsummer night's dream in those same 42 minutes you can also make vanilla ice cream that tastes better than the ones from Costco right in your chemistry class argue why one of the most obscure historical figures should actually be the greatest American or stage' disarmingly humorous rendition of act 2 of Hamlet thank you East Brunswick High School for gifting us six thousand eight hundred and forty of those forty-two minutes to the faculty who have watched us grow from chicks to birds to the friends who have accompanied us through thick and thin to the families who have loved us unconditionally thank you for giving us an education that is alive and well speaking of Education I want to share with you a story about uncertainty in AP chemistry I was introduced to the concept that you could not precisely know both the position and momentum of a particle at the same time this concept is aptly named the Heisenberg uncertainty principle I was fascinated and perplexed that something in science could be uncertain why wasn't the beauty of so many things in there constancy their certainty one plus one equals two Columbus found America in 1492 confused I looked more into the actual equation for this principle until I realized it wasn't an equation it had an inequality sign in it which means that things were up for grabs there was a chance I could be extremely off in predicting anything about this obscure particle what was the point of this mathematical joke yet there was something beautiful about this whole thing and then I realized what exactly that was a made all the equal signs a made all the F equals MA 's and sine squared plus cosine squared equals ones here was an inequality here was flexibility room for change I think quite often in life we write too many equations for ourselves we are encouraged to solve a problem the correct way we are asked to declare a major we take specific classes to satisfy graduation requirements we are so certain of where we are headed and our dreams become a rigid thing shining at the end of the tunnel but do we remember that the Train takes a winding path to get to that light change is what makes life Sparkle a child who wants to be a princess businessperson ninja or a superhero veterinarian president thankfully adjusts his or her goal some of the greatest thinkers transform their field because they asked a single question outside of their original field of interest change matures our dreams and refreshes our outlook discovery is a path rarely traveled because change is fundamentally uncomfortable but think of a door when you push a door open you are not only exiting an old place but entering a new one it takes courage to step into your potential don't be afraid to embrace an uncommon idea or to dip your toes into a question you don't fully understand don't be scared to recognize where improvements are needed and take action both in yourself and in the world it takes boldness to eliminate an equal sign class of 2020 I'm speaking these words to you during an exceptional time in history there are many things the world is not sure of there are many questions that remain unanswered but beyond all the fear and confusion I have a strong faith that unprecedented times breed unprecedented people and that includes you each and every one of you is a miracle you have no replica on this earth and likewise your impact will be unique with whatever talents you have so them and water them so that they may be reaped for the betterment of those around you love those who feel unloved reach out your hand to someone who needs it and while you walk this path called life never forget to smile laugh and write some bolt inequalities to the East Brunswick high school class of 2020 congratulations and may God bless you in all of your endeavors thank you the chorus will now present their rendition of see you again recorded by Charlie puth and arranged by Roger Emerson [Music] we began when I see you again when I see you again [Music] why'd you not to leave me [Music] know how to tell you without giving much worse [Music] [Applause] [Music] Oh [Music] all you ate right [Music] we on the strength I carry on [Music] Oh [Music] tell you all about it when I see you Oh [Music] we will now hear from the faculty speaker as voted by the members of the graduating class of 2020 dr. Alan Rodman [Applause] thank you and welcome to the members of the Board of Education dr.

Kylie has been significantly involved in getting that really visiting the schools taking snapshots of the rooms measuring how many kids could we get in a classroom given the requirements of as you probably read it's still being recommended that a six-foot distance from dust to dust however a three-foot distance is okay it is acceptable so we're trying to work within that and I'll ask mr. Kiley to talk about that in a second a little bit more on that but we did give that information to the building team today and said where we would have to probably lean towards some kind of hybrid or using spaces differently whatever it might be the Commissioner does want this information from districts I think most districts he is fully aware that given those restrictions it's going to be very very difficult to say here everybody come on in but they want that information so they can either advocate for more funding or whatever it might be they just need the data in hand so we'll be required to submit three plans in August at some time we also will need to submit a plan for students that special education students are thinking about programs etc etc we have to do that as well I think I'll stop there right now let mr.

Valesky in the central administration dr. Mandela and the high school administration by teaching colleagues and other members of our school community parents and most importantly the members of the East Brunswick High School class of 2020 I am extremely honored that you have chosen me to be the faculty speaker particularly as I am joining you in moving on from the high school as well there is a certain symmetry here as 43 years ago I was a member of the East Brunswick high school class of 1977 sitting on this football field awaiting my graduation since I cannot remember who it was that provided our faculty speech I will take that as a sign I should try to keep this as short as possible normally this is where I would begin to talk about the importance of this day your future etc however we need to recognize that this graduation is unlike so many of its past iterations and clearly not what you or I we're expecting none of us anticipated that we would not be sharing it together as one school community that we are here today acknowledging this most important and transitional event it's a testament to your resilience and strength you persevered and adapted to a new way of learning and interacting with people I request you take the opportunity to think about this time of transition try to step out of who you are and think about who you want to be for all of you this is a time when you move from the comforts of your family and what you have known into a future which is far less settled I would encourage you to embrace this change as who have been forced to embrace change as a result of kovat 19 life is about change it is about seeing this as an opportunity perhaps unknowingly you've been spending your life to date preparing for this moment and similar moments to come you've been inculcating the values and principles which will guide you as you explore this journey called life your experiences with your family friends and even maybe your teachers have provided you with the means to embark on this journey what I am advocating to you is enjoy the ride Fred Rogers of Mister Rogers neighborhood once noted that often when you are at the end of something you are at the beginning of something else that's okay nothing is set in stone and what seems important now may not be 20 years from now life is not a picture frozen in time it is more akin to a movie one which you are writing as you go along rather than fearing this unknown embrace it experience life take chances go down the unknown path and see where it leads be a part of something don't just observe life get your hands dirty and live it as you continue down this path find others to share this life with friends family a significant other your own society as it were unfortunately our society is in the midst of dealing with the soul-searching moment our nation is torn by issues of racism and inequality issues which my in previous generations have failed to address as you begin your voyage through life I would ask you to learn from our mistakes and work to find a solution to these long simmering issues be agents of change participate in society speak your mind act embrace the role of being a citizen in our society we live in a nation which allows us the opportunity to be the sovereigns in our society take this opportunity provided educate yourself about issues discuss volunteer vote you are our future having taken my opportunity to advocate for civic engagement I leave you with one last thought this life is you or voyage the destination whatever that might be is nowhere near as important as the voyage itself Nunes you muted your muted mr. News I apologize the question that I have is when they're talking three foot six foot are they talking from the end of the desk or like when the chair is pulled into the desk and then going that way because and and and again I'm splitting hairs here but it makes a difference as to possibly quote-unquote getting another roll in and that many more students into a classroom line exactly exactly yeah I'm from when I read it was deaf edge of the desk to edge of desk okay and again um mr.

Colley's had a lot of really working hard he's going to be working with the buildings this week as well to look at other spaces and we're looking at twelve to fourteen students based on that guidance right now depending on this guy and that's based on the three-foot guidance now I've got to ask because I have seen the guidance myself as well what medical expert has said that three feet is now suitable I understand that I hear we're basing it on presumptions of other countries and how other countries have reopened their education systems as well as students are not as susceptible however as a parent I mean as the school community remember I have a duty to protect the students and the staff and the diamond public schools and you know until I see something coming from the CDC I'm not comfortable with putting those deaths three feet apart I'm being I'm being honest and upfront and and you know we had that conversation today that although dusty can recommend like you said based on someone's recommendations and they do put a lot of resources in that document which again we advocate we encourage folks to read that which is on our website but I'm sure a lot of folks are gonna be even our teachers will be questioning that that parameter so like dr.
