Martin Luther King famously said if a man is called to be a streetsweeper he should street sweets even as Michelangelo painted or Beethoven composed music or Shakespeare wrote poetry he should sweep streets so well that all the hosts of heaven and earth will cause to say here lived a great sweet street sweeper who did his job well I believe that Elsa carries these words in her heart when she comes to work at Murray each day Elsa's energy level is unmatched she has the stamina of a marathon runner when it comes to taking on giraffes and completing projects she's usually powered by diet coke breakfast burritos and mrs. Castillo speak young every time the district has a new tech program Elsa makes sure that Murray is the first to get things up and running her tenacity in ensuring that all programs are ready is unparalleled but she doesn't stop there when other schools need assistance she is always quick to offer her help she has always three steps ahead of the rest of the world she is determined and persistent challenges and obstacles to us mere mortals are simply speed bumps for Elsa we might slow her down for a minute but she charges forward and just says things done as our lab aide Elsa also works closely with our tech reps she helps anyone who is having computer problems staffs students and frequently me Elsa goes above and beyond when needed she steps up to help in any capacity she has great leadership skills and knows how to be flexible when needed she is always keenly aware of the students who need that extra bit of attention she reads to that child who is struggling she listens to that child who is having problems she buys socks for a student who needs them just because and she does this all quietly and she thinks that most of us aren't paying attention today though so we are she pays attention to the students needs staff needs and she gives from her heart perhaps of even greater importance in Elsa our students and staff have a daily role model of a person of integrity and honor who gives her finest effort and excellence to any and all given tasks it is truly a privilege and an honor to call you a colleague friend please join me in recognizing and honoring outside [Music] [Applause] [Music] so Oprah just recently launched its incredible speech the Golden Globes I'm not sure if anybody was a profound speech that she gave but she accepted her award and even more so I found that I found a interview that she gave backstage was run like a Q&A and they had asked her what is the key to what is it what is it that makes you successful what is the key to your success and she said something that was actually it was super profound for me and I've had to stop tonight and I wrote it down and this is what she said she said the key to fulfillment success and happiness contentment in life is when you align your personality with what you're so actually came to do I believe everyone has a soul their own personal spiritual energy so when you use your personality to serve whatever that thing is you can't help be successful and I thought and the first person that thought of when when I when I heard that was my own mother my mother has just recently celebrated 40 years with the County of Los Angeles as a clerk for their brilliant department so what she doesn't anyways is she goes out she interviews patients that did not have medical benefits and tries to get them to qualify to get some sort of help and and I have to tell you that you know as a 44 year old woman now and I look back on my life I think about you know having conversations with we're working like that she talks to me every day and I can't think of a day when she was in a bad mood hey I can't think of a day where she was upset or she was cranky or anything like that and that happened and this fit her perfectly because she would come home and she would tell me stories of what she did it work to help people and I thought that was her thing and successes is measured in different ways and she's always told me I don't wealthy I'm rich just because I have you we have this we can have life and and and so now as an older woman as a mom as a parent I I take that with me and I feel like wow I mean I'll be rich okay but but I I feel a lot of contentment and so I turn that around and they look at I look at all of you that that come to work on a daily basis the stories that I've heard we've heard some very powerful things tonight you know we've heard positive energy we've heard generosity we've heard giving and and so you know I have to I had to stop and thank you and congratulate you burrows recommended the budget roundtable on January 3rd any discussion or questions regarding the minutes okay all in favor first okay the superintendent's update thank you so the first one as I was saying earlier just briefly on the news conversion we had our first paper last week incredibly it's smooth smooth as can be with all the preparation was fantastic and our employees are utilizing the employee self-service electronic portal and it's roll worked out well so I will thankful for the flexibility and I'd like to recognize the team they really did a great job and in February if we could bring the whole crew here it would be great to recognize that in front of the board I want to give the public in the board an update on snow days unfortunately we missed a few days this year already so - it's a total of four days we've missed thus far and it is early in winter season October 30th we actually had to lose that we lost they there because of a power outage we started with a two-hour delay and it became apparent because of ice and falling limbs and things like that and lack of power of whisking err we just couldn't have school in the district the other days or January fourth and fifth the big go those are the head and then just today January 17th so that puts us to our last day of school being on what do I have it here yep Tuesday the 19th mountain so the last day of school is scheduled for June 19th I'm sure everybody has that doesn't now as of now hopefully we don't have any more days and well it's not my update I did want to bring to the attention of the board in the public that dr. shealynn with hiring from center school mrs.

Salvin was a wonderful part of that conversation as well so that's going on what I really want to besides the letter I sent home on Friday afternoon to the parents and to the teachers about that is we are leadership attribute survey we're going to be very brief survey may be sending that out tomorrow via school message for parents from center school and huckleberry as well as staff and faculty from huckleberry are looking for in a principal to get their input you know before we embark on posting the job and going through the search process so that should go out tomorrow if there is a glitch and it can't go out tomorrow it will go out before the weekend so that's my superintendent update I don't know if anybody has thank you thank you okay next we have VL subcommittee reports first on our list their facility you see if I know you gave a report at the last meeting was there anything you needed to add in regards to facilities or the strategic facilities for facilities we don't have an update that was given at last meeting concerning the steering committee the strategic steering committee we are going to be meeting with the architect on Wednesday January 24th at 5:30 what we're going to be doing in that meeting is we're going to be going through a timeline of what they're going to be doing with with deadlines and on projections and then we are also at that meeting going to be scheduling further meetings out with Tecton architects thank you if I can just add the architect and Dan Caldwell our facilities director have been in touch and they're working on getting together soon to start looking at opportunities for the tectum to get into the buildings to moving on that as well great and if they could keep me in the loop elijah leaders I'd like to also would be a part of the touring of math he's one did you know we weren't wasting time they're starting to talk you just yeah thank you you got okay questions for me all right and next we have the finance subcommittee report all right so to make sure I'm going so we did need as a regular meeting on January 8th or the finance subcommittee we went through a number of our standard things the financial report and the check registers and there's quite frankly there's not a lot to report on that there everything's tracking with the exception of the special ed costs which we've all been having lots of discussions about so that's all the other lines seem to be pretty well we spent time talking about the approach to what we're doing tonight so I'm not going to dwell on that because we've spent most of this evening on that and and we talked about the upcoming board finance meeting which happened last week when it was last week and and and at that meeting the Board of Finance basically table the discussion until their next meeting we did get an update on the Muniz payout update and we did talk about agricultural program at non-allowed high school and we are having an increasing number of students signing up for that and I've noticed it in our budget data there was an increased cost to that because it does cost us to send kids to that school so we talked about the possibility of actually establishing on the limit the number students that we is aboard with a while simulator that we have for the magnet school there's a limited that it's limited number of spots and there's a method for doing that and we just didn't come to an answer to that we decided to have that would have to be a board discussion forum orgy and we'll get that on the schedule at the right time so that's it just one thing it's hopeful that the part of Finance addresses the appropriation at a special meeting that they have talked to them and hopeful that they do that's good and we're not waiting until the next board meeting for that so I think not sure I think that's really important because I think it affects the budget process okay any questions for above then we can move on to the consent agenda recommend a motion that the board approve the items listed on the consent agenda as recommended new hires resignations and transfers to get a second okay questions discussions regarding the consent agenda okay all in favor aye host so next we're going to do business and first them to do business is the deka trip ever bought a paper trip for Decca to attend the international career development conference from Saturday April 21st 2018 there Wednesday April 24th 2018 in Atlanta Georgia as requested by the marketing business teacher and deck advisor Fiona to engage us principal mark Amanda we have a second second okay mr. Miranda thank you miss dagger would have been here tonight but she's a little bit of further drive to come and I told him to stay home certainly I think I can handle this so I made more thermo sentence presenting tonight this conferences when the board is as approved in the past for many years this is the spring competition conference where students will compete in the spring in multiple different categories as part of the DECA car chapter and those winning in certain categories in the State Conference wouldn't be able to compete in the international conference that takes place last year is in Anaheim California this year a little bit closer in Atlanta Georgia so to be able to keep some costs down it really is at this point a question as to how many students will go we don't know yet it really depends on how the results come out as from the state and how our students do so PR is really broken down for the cost what's going to be the total cost you'll see there is about $750 a student you know the room and board registration airfare she's been scouring websites looking for airfare to find the cheapest and most convenient for students and ground transportation once they get there is about $750 as you can see judging by I see some of the new name plates out there which is one of the ways they're looking to raise money and actually reduce some costs for the trip we've got that high quality laser engraver there's actually a business model out there they're working through it they've got some invoices it's a pretty amazing step they're actually creating their own business at this point and they're looking to continue to generate revenue which will then help defray the cost of this so the cost of students goes down lower and lower a if you look you lo actually miss school three days Monday a Tuesday and a Wednesday during this time so I'm asking for approval that once we know what the students are that they can't attend this overnight trip for these this day thinking of the young the school calendar right off my head is system Monday Tuesday Wednesday directly after Spring Break we can I believe it's after Spring Break okay and you know how many students approximately attended last year last year we had nine students that attended and a year before we had fifteen at one point in time that's why I fell to put fifteen that's been really the max we've ever taken and so a lot depends on state officers last year that we did a few state officers we had Dan and Mark who were state officers who regardless of the competition we're gonna go attend the National Conference anyway and the way it a bunch of students actually qualify so it fluctuates I'm guessing somewhere between talk to Fiona today she said between seven and fifteen would be what it would likely look like and the other questions regarding I don't wanna question but I'll make a comment this this competition every year we get feedback from it afterwards and I'd love to hear from them afterwards on their experience but this is I've been impressed at what they get out of these competitions absolutely great for the kids [Music] okay all in favor then of the DECA trip I opposed thank you I'd love to hear about it next we have the a BHS keyfob trip to Springfield recommend a motion that the board approve a trip to Springfield Massachusetts from Friday April 6 to Sunday April 8 to attempt to attend deccan as requested by BHS teacher Jennifer Donovan and BHS principal mark Belinda [Music] okay hello again one time statement I'm pleased to introduce our key club advisor Jen Donovan and I believe president correct yes and president key club sophia's as Lowe who's here and I just I'm still blown away I just made a connection finitude with Dan and Sophia and it's kind of blowing my mind right now so I apologize for the luck that actually and that they're actually step-siblings which is something I did not know until now it's really kind of blowing my mind a lot of brainpower to snow day so it's my pleasure to introduce the two of them to talk about the trip and request your permission to come so decon is from April 6 - April 8th and it's in Springfield Massachusetts it's a conference that's led by Kiwanis which is the overarching organization for Key Club and it provides experiences for the Key Club students not only from Brookfield but from clubs throughout the state and throughout the region in Maine I believe Rhode Island Connecticut was it Vermont New Hampshire also and Massachusetts all come all of these clubs come to the Springfield Massachusetts conference to me and there's the electric ordered members there's also caucuses that members can attend and they vote for positions in Key Club there's also conferences that the students can go to if they are looking to be prospective presidents vice presidents or other officer positions that has very valuable information for those students if they would like to see themselves in those positions in the future the cost for purse turn per student is 160 dollars but the bus and transportation to get to Springfield is all provided by Kiwanis so there's no transportation costs there or back I'm and then there are also a few chaperones that will be depending we leave been around 11 o'clock on Friday won't you get out there for registration and then we usually return on Sunday around 2 o'clock the students will be responsible for two dinners and like to breakfast meals well beer actually on the trip last year our vice president I'll let you tell them a good story got elected to lieutenant governor and is actually one of the kids running the conference trend this year so she's gonna go up early and she's having she has a huge heart and making sure the conference is running smoothly so no adults really run the conference we find efficient background just like I said the background lucifier talk [Music] yeah so the vice president of this year she actually got elected last year at decon and has been doing a lot of stuff with the district and trying to keep things together between the different clubs in the area so she will be going up before to make sure that the club not the club the conference runs smoothly so she'll be there a few days earlier so we do have someone who will be going and hopefully will be getting a bunch of kids from the club who are interested we've had some people express interest in being officers in her future years so we definitely would like to see these kids and them going to the conference and having the experience and seeing what they can do and what the could provide for them Russians so really they're only going to be missing a few hours of school correct and how many how many key clubbers do you anticipate going [Music] so we're thinking probably our max would be about 15 but we're thinking most likely 10 students okay any other questions okay all in favor aye opposed have a great time sure you get picture the other time okay next on our new business we have the NGSS science pilot program approval recommending motion that the board approve the NGSS smithsonian k-8 science pilot program as recommended by the Cape subcommittee and as presented by Assistant Superintendent dr.

Marc dr. maureen ruby good evening well excuse me for sex good evening I'm not going to take a lot of time I'm going to go through these slides very quickly because you have them in front of you and we talked about this briefly at the last meeting but as you are well aware we have new standards in Connecticut at the next generation science standards and we are working to become fully and fully implementing those standards so in our curriculum work we're working with teachers who were focusing on science from all the different levels in the district to revise rewrite our curriculum in we also have a need besides having the curriculum document developed to have materials for teachers teaching science according to in alignment with the next generation science standards is not the way I was taught science or even how I taught science or how any of you on the board were taught science it's very different and it's a real paradigm shift for the teachers it's really about doing science and thinking like a scientist not sitting and receiving information from a teacher so if you look at this slide there's and this was provided to me I didn't create this the evolution of science instruction and looking at the the metamorphosis of science over the past several decades and you know when I went to school science was a textbook there were no gateway experiences it was just pretty much direct instruction read the blog answer the questions watch a demonstration then we moved to science where it was object based learning this is where we gave students the opportunity to engage with physical materials to help them understand properties the problem was that it would ease experiences really weren't in the context of real life problem-solving so we're we're we're at now with the new standards is with phenomenon based learning so this approach which I would take hours to go into here and I'm happy to discuss it with you but basically we're having students think about phenomenon that happen in the world and then delve into an inquiry about what is it that's going on and so helping them to become problem solvers and use higher-level thinking skills while they're learning science and they're actually using science so we the next generation science standards really has innovations that focus on having kids examine real-world phenomena and then designing solutions and they talk about three-dimensional learning so I'm going to talk a little bit about three-dimensional learning so that you understand why we're requesting to do this pilot our next generation science standards are not standalone standards they embed English language arts and mathematics in it so all of the work that we've talked to you about about argumentation and argumentation in oral language and argumentation and writing really aligns with the next generation science standards because kids have to do the work think about it and from their inquiry they have to take the evidence that they collect and they have to be able to present that evidence and make an argument as to why it means what they think it means and in doing that work they're going to have to use their mathematics skills from the Common Core mathematics that we're teaching to solve the problems mathematically that they're facing it's about all students it's not about some students it's not about the high level students it's not exclusionary for second language learners or special ed students this is for all students and this this graphic here talks about the five key innovations that are part of next generation science standards we are looking at providing teachers with the tools that will allow them to engage kids in science the way we need to teach science today to be in alignment with the standards and to prepare our kids for higher-level science opportunities in high school and Beyond high school in the workplace and to understand the world around them and so we need to find curricular tools that we can put in the hands of teachers because to put all this together we we as teachers do not have the capacity to do that one of the problems that we face when we look at science materials or science curricular tools in the elementary grades is the amount of time that we have to teach science brookfield is no different than any other district in the state or in the country we share our curriculum time between science and social studies and also since we have a bless program for foreign language we're taking some time out of content area time for foreign language instruction which you're all well aware of because we've discussed that last year so when we looked at all of the company's products of curricular tools for teaching science the problem was not that they weren't any good they were excellent however they all require 45 to 50 minutes of science instruction every day to use their curricular tools that just doesn't match up with the time that we have so the Smithsonian science curriculum K through 8 is unique compared to the other programs that are out there because we can teach all of the standards in the amount of the time that we have in our curriculum and the students will get the full experience and will be able to then fit our social studies curriculum into that time slot so in eating with the company you know this is an investment and you want to try it before you buy it so what we have been in negotiations with the Smithsonian and Carolina which is the company that publishes the materials and produces the kits is to do a pilot with one unit in each of the grades K through 8 this spring in two classrooms the materials will be provided to us gratis and they will provide the professional development to the teachers who were implementing these this one unit Radice at the end of the pilot will be able to read to evaluate what the experience was hear back from the administrators from the teachers we would involve our science department chair at the high school because these kids were preparing them to be successful in high school from the minute they get into into school because without this background they don't have the if you think about your head being a filing cabinet they don't have the file setup for the type of work that they need to do in science and be successful in their high school experience so what I'm asking for you to do and I'm just gonna flip through these slides very quickly this these last slides that you have show the units of study and the alignment to the standards some of you have heard us talking about bundling the standards some of the curriculum work that we're doing and the beautiful thing about the way this is set up is they have bundled the standards for the areas that we have to cut cover and teach in science and have our kids have experience in the same way that we've been doing art for it don't work so it's a nice alignment with the work that we've been doing so what I'm asking for tonight is for a board approval to proceed with negotiate finishing the negotiations with Carolina and Smithsonian to bring this pilot in in the spring have it in two classrooms K through eight so that we can then make an informed decision as to how we want to move forward we are not doing this because there's a test however there is a test and so it is our responsibility to have our curriculum and what the experiences that we provide for our students being aligned with the standards so that when they take that mandated test they're prepared because we've done what we need to do for them and so that's that's why I'm here to ask for questions so if the pilot is successful the understanding would be that you would initiate this next year thank you browsing that because we can't do everything at once can't do everything at once for a couple reasons first you know the teachers they said it's a it's a huge learning curve to teach this way it's also expensive because we haven't been putting a lot of funding into science curriculum for a very long time so this would be a phase in there are in kindergarten there are three modules and in the other grades there are three and four modules for the whole year and so we would they focus on life science physical science and current science and engineering and so we would with the decision-making at a school level make a determination for which modules we would rule out in the upcoming year and then in subsequent years so that over the next two to three years we would purchase the materials and get the training for the teachers and the fully compliant and in alignment with with the State Standards the key thing to know about those the purchase of the materials is that the actual curricular the reading and the books there are books that align with English language arts those are all a one-time purchase as long as we take care of the materials there's obviously replacement some the only costs beyond the initial purchase each year in the rollout would be the consumables which we buy anyway for for the science that we teach now I don't know if that answers your question and and would the cost of the instructional tools is that built until or do we see it in the proposed by an estimate because regardless of whether we go with this or something else we have to okay so that is reflected in the proposed budget and other questions if some of you saw the cake I mean not only is it an alignment of standards which we have to make sure but it looks like a really engaging experience for the kids I think this is something that like the teachers weren't teaching science the ways we want to be teaching science I think the kids will be they'll be like why aren't we doing science today that's that's the type of context that they put the instruction interest I'd like to do and I'd like to teach it [Music] okay there's no other questions all in favor I opposed [Music] yes thank you very much good to hear about this one absolutely last item in my business is the shape America health and physical fitness field test the shape America health and physical fitness field test as recommended by the Cape subcommittee and is presented by flight director Steve Ballmer WMS health teacher Joe Ian Thompson [Music] this is a test that's going to help us to sauce audience on as we move forward into providing curriculum and operating our new quicken into Rubicon Atlas and we start aligning with standards this is a free test by arm shape America and also it's going to help us as we move forward with our high school Cora can now that we have to UM teach on the 10th and 12th grade have to align with the Connecticut State statue of teaching on substance abuse and alcohol tobacco and tenth and twelfth grade and also with the eighth graders when they come here other than that need require a limb fourth quarter in health on synostosis it would be great for us to look at the standards and see where we are what we need to improve on it's a pretty simple toss it takes one class board and the kids will do well on the computers Ohio our kids here have computers in the our middle school we out the arm computer labs so it's just something that would be great for us like I said to assess our needs Oh pathetic questions so what sorts of things are they doing on the computer it's a standards-based questions if you are if there's a link up here if you want to go out and fly their sample questions it's it's it's actually pretty cool so it was Melvin and I both took the test and he answered our I guess already takes it to a completely different question knocks based on the same standard and then we get all the results and we look at those results and help drive our Quaker I took two of their tests there are very thorough you know health related questions physical fitness would related questions very thorough and that I said is very important as we look at as we build our health curriculum at the high school and moving it up to one full product from a half product so this is a test assess the students knowledge of health on pavement PE related related items yes and the and it's more question-and-answer it's not actually a physical test yes I'll corrupt my thought that's why wasn't fair on so it's and and it's all students would take it and yes grades in which grades were they taken five eight and nine five eight nine or five eight nine through twelve house well it's off of nine through twelve we would want to do it in mine to see what we would need to fix in ten eleven twelve and as we incorporate the tenth and twelfth grade health curriculum so this is a field test and the data that we will be provided with will be aggregate data and not individual student data because as you know with a field test they're looking to make sure that the questions are you know ones that are work and have high reliability and validity and by being a part of this at this point in time it's going to give and I spoke to Jillian Thompson here tonight the she's been doing a lot of the lead work with Steve and some of the other health teachers and business on the curriculum writing and I'm a part of all the work that we've been doing and they are really eager to take advantage of this because since they're writing and implementing some of this new curriculum as they're as they're writing it they want to get feedback to see if where they may have weaknesses that they can work on while we're in this curriculum process and so that's and since it's it doesn't cost us anything and we're not looking at it to see you know how much John how's camp posted we're really looking at it to give us feet really critical feedback on our curriculum development and then after as you know when they do field tests and they're putting that much money into it it's because eventually that they're looking to develop a test that's going to be a national test so so that's I think that's really important for everyone to understand that we're not we're not looking to do this to get information on individual students at this point in time it's not even going to be available because a field test gives you a target data so you can look at here at your system they're committed to get us back the data it's right but when I went I saw the question that said when will our district received results it says please return back for more information that's almost like a message you get in your computer they don't have the exact date but they but we definitely be a part of this we get the aggregate data for the classes how long does the test take it says it says right in here it says it takes more class right so this Kinnear would take one class period here who take a half a class period good one well maybe 40 minutes or sucked okay in Steve this would be administered likely during a health or a PE classes how it would be on a certain okay the health part would be obviously in the health class in the health classroom setting and if he pee ones would be in the PS a-- settings like now we do stuff at NP even and then the kids bring into the devices so there will be nothing new to that okay thank you thank you any other questions okay all in favor aye opposed all right thanks Dee hey mr.
